:01:18. > :01:28.three of the newest tracks, this weekend, welcome to one of the
:01:28. > :01:36.
:01:36. > :01:41.true for Ayrton Senna and millions of Brazilians.
:01:41. > :01:47.Ayrton Senna achieves his ambition to win the Brazilian Grand Prix!
:01:47. > :01:51.It was all too much for the man himself. Some moment for McLaren.
:01:51. > :01:55.10 years later, a familiar face held to celebrate in style.
:01:55. > :02:05.A brilliant drive from David Coulthard.
:02:05. > :02:13.
:02:13. > :02:18.Two men in particular would love to watching this weekend. They are in
:02:18. > :02:25.great form, they remember winning the title here, and they would love
:02:25. > :02:30.to finish this season ahead. Welcome to the final weekend of the
:02:30. > :02:36.2011 season, from Interlagos, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The engines are
:02:36. > :02:41.warming up, the 40th Brazilian Grand Prix. The crowd are here in
:02:41. > :02:48.their droves, as always are. It is a special place, and behind us on
:02:48. > :02:54.the podium, a special podium. Brazilians are an emotional people,
:02:54. > :02:59.we see that in the way drivers perform. 86 million people. These
:02:59. > :03:05.huge following for Formula One. When you on the podium, the
:03:05. > :03:12.Grandstand comes alight. Even this morning, there was singing in the
:03:12. > :03:16.grandstand. There is real passion, and that comes through. You picked
:03:16. > :03:23.up a win here in the rain in incredible conditions a few years
:03:23. > :03:30.ago, 2003, you did not get your opportunity to stand up there.
:03:30. > :03:37.remember rightly, it was looking particularly gloomy and grumpy! Ron
:03:37. > :03:42.Dennis stole my favourite position! What happened? There were lots of
:03:42. > :03:51.crashes. It was tipping down with rain. Look at the chaos. Cars were
:03:51. > :03:56.shunting and crashing. My driver drove fantastically. Gary Anderson
:03:56. > :04:04.said, we have got to get to 75% of the race, because then we could get
:04:04. > :04:09.four points for the race. We stayed out there. We won the race. But
:04:09. > :04:13.afterwards, we had to appeal the decision of the stewards. We won
:04:13. > :04:21.the case and we won the Grand Prix. That is the most subdued I have
:04:21. > :04:26.ever seen you! You have to think what was going on in my brain!
:04:26. > :04:29.are very lucky, you know what it takes to come here and win. I would
:04:29. > :04:34.love to know what it is like to drive around the circuit. They have
:04:34. > :04:38.been trying out something that we will see more of in the future.
:04:38. > :04:42.Does this give us a good idea of what it is like? It gives you a
:04:42. > :04:52.better insight than the camera view we normally have, which looks down
:04:52. > :04:53.
:04:53. > :04:58.at the driver. It takes away the amount of movement. A lot of wind
:04:58. > :05:05.movement across the driver's helmet. He will be glancing down at the
:05:05. > :05:11.dashboard. It is a great camera angles. I had one of those in 2008.
:05:11. > :05:15.But hopefully, we will have more of this. We would have had a perfect
:05:15. > :05:20.view of pole position, if we had followed Sebastian Vettel, because
:05:20. > :05:27.he has been dominant as we have travelled the world. This season
:05:27. > :05:32.has given us a 92% increase in overtaking it, the dentist at the
:05:32. > :05:38.double world champion, and a shirt that has raised money for charity.
:05:38. > :05:48.And the fund is not over yet. -- fund.
:05:48. > :06:05.
:06:05. > :06:09.McLaren would love to do what they did last time in Abu Dhabi, to
:06:09. > :06:16.snatch pole position. It was taken away by Sebastian Vettel at the
:06:16. > :06:20.very end. Let's discuss the season. The last nine races, they have
:06:20. > :06:24.ended up on the podium, and after an awful start, they win the award
:06:24. > :06:29.for turning their season around. McLaren could win so many awards,
:06:29. > :06:37.it is a great team, they set standards, were kept her shiny cars
:06:37. > :06:45.are. They had a ropey start to the season, but it was a tremendous
:06:45. > :06:50.comeback. They can develop a car. They have got to feel pretty
:06:50. > :06:53.confident for this weekend. But we have to be critical, they are used
:06:53. > :06:57.to winning championships, they have the resources, they have the
:06:57. > :07:02.manpower, the skills, the drivers, and it is unthinkable that they
:07:02. > :07:07.started as badly as they did, and they gave the drivers know platform
:07:07. > :07:13.to win the championship. One of your favourite pastimes is
:07:13. > :07:17.criticising McLaren. When you consider that Ferrari have won
:07:17. > :07:23.titles, and Renault, McLaren are the only team who have regularly
:07:23. > :07:30.raced and beaten Red Bull this season. There is something slightly
:07:30. > :07:33.different. There is success in their blood all the way through. I
:07:34. > :07:39.am being critical because I know they are capable of winning these
:07:39. > :07:42.championships. You cannot say that about Renault. If we are being fair,
:07:42. > :07:46.they are an outstanding team, and worthy of every accolade we can
:07:46. > :07:50.throw at them, but they did not do the job well enough at the
:07:50. > :07:55.beginning of the season. We would have had a much tighter and more
:07:55. > :08:00.interesting championship. We will wait and see if their pace shows in
:08:00. > :08:08.qualifying. Jenson Button, since 2005, never qualified in the top 10
:08:08. > :08:15.here. It has gone a bit trendy here. The drivers have changed their
:08:16. > :08:20.helmet. Lewis Hamilton had a Bob Marley helmet in India. His helmet
:08:20. > :08:29.is different, the Brazilian flag. I am sure you will recognise the
:08:29. > :08:32.design. No prizes for identifying the inspiration.
:08:33. > :08:41.Sometimes, I do a special helmet for a Grand Prix. Was thinking what
:08:41. > :08:48.to do for Brazil. Ayrton Senna, one of the most significant figures in
:08:48. > :08:53.my life. I was just going to have his design, but I know Bruno Senna
:08:53. > :08:58.has that, so I wondered whether it was possible to do a mix between my
:08:58. > :09:04.helmet and his. I put half of my design and then his on the back.
:09:04. > :09:08.They wanted me to use his new logo, but I wanted to use this one,
:09:08. > :09:17.because I used to have bait T-shirt with the Senna S on it. It feels
:09:17. > :09:27.awesome in the car. It has a green interior. All of the helmets have
:09:27. > :09:31.
:09:31. > :09:35.black. I specifically ordered this. I had to go and buy it myself. It
:09:35. > :09:42.is so cool. There is only one of them in the world. I wear it
:09:42. > :09:45.proudly this weekend, regardless of what the sort we have. -- what
:09:45. > :09:51.result we have. I hope Ayrton Senna is proud of me.
:09:51. > :09:57.We are proud of Lewis Hamilton. They are confident, already wearing
:09:58. > :10:03.the rocket red T-shirts. But they are fans who are happy to be here!
:10:03. > :10:13.A nightmare for you commentators, all of these will make changes.
:10:13. > :10:18.
:10:18. > :10:21.me, growing up, they should maintain the majority of the design.
:10:21. > :10:26.But it is great for the charity. But when you keep changing as often
:10:26. > :10:35.as they do, it is difficult to tell who is driving the car, because you
:10:35. > :10:40.cannot see the number. For years, it is the one area that a driver
:10:40. > :10:46.has had signed Asante. The team has imposed their sponsors, and
:10:46. > :10:50.religiously, it has been the one part of the driver that he can have
:10:50. > :10:55.control on. One would not like to see that changing. They can have as
:10:55. > :11:01.many different things on it as they like. I have remembered one small
:11:01. > :11:07.think. When I was at McLaren, they offered $1 million for me to give
:11:07. > :11:13.up the right to the image of my helmet, and I said, no, I have had
:11:13. > :11:19.this helmet since I was 11. It is not like you to miss out on every
:11:19. > :11:24.flight that! You could have given us half a million each! Ayrton
:11:24. > :11:29.Senna will be proud. That helmet will be auctioned off for the
:11:29. > :11:34.Ayrton Senna Foundation. They have just turned on the engine. It is
:11:34. > :11:38.sounding good. How much would McLaren have to pick up their first
:11:38. > :11:45.pole position here in the last 11 seasons? That would feel good, but
:11:45. > :11:52.there are no prizes for poor position. The prizes come on Sunday.
:11:52. > :11:59.Everybody will be hoping that the wheels come off.
:11:59. > :12:05.The race in the desert is under way, plenty of smoke. It is even between
:12:05. > :12:10.Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso goes round outside
:12:10. > :12:16.of Mark Webber. Sebastian Vettel has gone off with a puncture! He
:12:16. > :12:20.has not even made it down to the fifth corner! Fernando Alonso has
:12:20. > :12:27.gone past Jenson Button! Lewis Hamilton leads the Grand Prix
:12:27. > :12:33.comfortably. Sebastian Vettel comes into the pits, and his luck has run
:12:33. > :12:38.out. I never thought I would say that this year! Now, we have got
:12:38. > :12:44.Mark Webber alongside Jenson Button. That looks like the position is
:12:44. > :12:54.taken. Jenson Button is indeed ers zone. He will be able to open his
:12:54. > :13:01.
:13:01. > :13:06.wink. Double DRS, two overtakes. Jenson Button does not have KERS.
:13:06. > :13:13.They touch, more or less. He goes through. Jenson Button comes up the
:13:13. > :13:20.inside and takes the position. expect Felipe Massa to defend the
:13:20. > :13:27.inside line. Very clear defence. Trying to use the extra grip, which
:13:27. > :13:37.she does. Felipe Massa needs to keep it tidy and get his own DRS.
:13:37. > :13:39.
:13:39. > :13:48.Felipe Massa should have given it up. Who is praised? Felipe Massa is.
:13:48. > :13:54.This is Mark Webber. He has got the inside line. Jenson Button decided
:13:54. > :14:00.not to do it. Felipe Massa has barn, which has taken the pressure off
:14:01. > :14:10.Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton is back, and so are McLaren! A tremendous
:14:11. > :14:14.
:14:14. > :14:18.Tremendous to see Lewis Hamilton back on the top step of the podium.
:14:18. > :14:22.Remarkably, despite winning that race, Lewis Hamilton can no longer
:14:22. > :14:25.catch his teammate to finish second in the Championship. Mark Webber
:14:25. > :14:29.must win this weekend to become runner-up to his teammate,
:14:29. > :14:39.Sebastian Vettel. It is getting very tight in the Constructors'
:14:39. > :14:41.
:14:41. > :14:45.We have come out to the paddock to be joined by a man who will be
:14:45. > :14:49.recognisable to all of you, and to all of Brazil. It will be hoping to
:14:49. > :14:54.hold on to that fifth place in the Championship, Bruno Senna. In this
:14:54. > :15:01.race, and in this place, is the Senna name their help or hindrance
:15:01. > :15:06.to you? It is obviously a help. It is a lot of attention. But it is
:15:06. > :15:10.natural to come to your home race and get your countrymen to salute
:15:10. > :15:17.you. It is a great feeling, I'm very excited about the race. It is
:15:17. > :15:22.a fair bit of pressure as well. Absolutely, but pressure is always
:15:22. > :15:28.there. I want to deliver whenever I am in the car. It is no different
:15:28. > :15:32.to other places in that respect. you feels somewhat unlucky that at
:15:32. > :15:35.this stage, you arrive in a team like this and the performance of
:15:36. > :15:40.the car just disappear as? It is not really the performance of the
:15:40. > :15:47.car, it is more that the other guys are making strides and we are not.
:15:48. > :15:55.It is unfortunate. The decision was to invest in next year's car. I
:15:55. > :16:03.think it is natural. I'm sure that if I am raising for these guys next
:16:03. > :16:07.year, I will be pleased with this decision! We have had complaints
:16:07. > :16:13.from Vitaly Petrov, and some issues with Robert Kubica, does this
:16:13. > :16:20.enhance your opportunities for next year? It is hard to say. It depends
:16:21. > :16:26.very much on what I'm doing on the track. And also, if we can find
:16:26. > :16:35.some good backing for the team. It is an overall package, it is not
:16:35. > :16:41.just one thing. I don't think I'm fighting for Vitaly's seat, I'm
:16:41. > :16:48.fighting for the other seed, and it is a pretty fierce fight. 17th in
:16:48. > :16:52.final practice, what was the problem this morning? We had of it
:16:52. > :16:59.-- a bit of a difficult run this morning, we had an imagination.
:16:59. > :17:09.These things took some time away. We only have one hour, so we got to
:17:09. > :17:10.
:17:10. > :17:14.do very few laps in the session. But if it is wet tomorrow, the race
:17:14. > :17:20.will become a lottery anyway. will let you go, because there's a
:17:20. > :17:30.big crowd building around us. We will await news on the future of
:17:30. > :17:33.Bruno Senna. And talking of news, here's Ted Kravitz. The spring his
:17:33. > :17:38.back in Lewis Hamilton's stepped this weekend. His McLaren has been
:17:38. > :17:41.quick, he was fastest in second practice, and happy with himself
:17:41. > :17:47.after spending time with some special friends in the USA earlier
:17:47. > :17:54.this week. I'm really excited to be here, coming off a positive couple
:17:54. > :18:01.of weeks. The last few days have been very positive for me as well.
:18:01. > :18:07.I was able to have a couple of great lunches and dinners with
:18:07. > :18:11.Nicole, which has been a real positive. It has been a year of
:18:11. > :18:16.growth, and hopefully in the future I will look back and think, I took
:18:16. > :18:21.a lot from that year. Next year will be an interesting one. Jenson
:18:21. > :18:24.Button is also after a good weekend. He struggled a little bit in
:18:24. > :18:30.practice compared to Hamilton, but things he can go well as long as he
:18:30. > :18:34.sorts out his qualifying. Winning here in Brazil would be great for
:18:35. > :18:39.me. First of all I have got to qualify the car inside the top 10,
:18:39. > :18:44.which I have not done for six years. And then I can have a good race.
:18:44. > :18:49.This is a great place to overtake. Sebastian Vettel says he still does
:18:49. > :18:53.not know why his tyre deflated on the first lap in Abu Dhabi. He
:18:53. > :18:58.denies that Red Bull were running with low tyre pressures, against
:18:58. > :19:02.Pirelli's advice. We did exactly the same as we did everywhere. I do
:19:02. > :19:06.not like the word bad luck, but there was not much we could do. For
:19:06. > :19:12.me, the most important thing was to understand that I did not do
:19:12. > :19:18.anything wrong in preparing the car for the start. And also, in the
:19:18. > :19:23.first corner. But it was nothing to do with the pressure or anything
:19:23. > :19:28.like that. Tomorrow marks Felipe Massa's 100th race for Ferrari, at
:19:28. > :19:32.the end of his worst season for the team. He gives some explanation
:19:32. > :19:37.here as to why he has got no podium finishes this season, while his
:19:37. > :19:42.teammate has got 10. Every race, something happens during the race.
:19:42. > :19:49.That affects me, in fighting for the podium. I think it was not a
:19:49. > :19:54.very nice season, something happened all the time. And it is
:19:54. > :19:58.also true to say that we did not have the car we expected. It seems
:19:58. > :20:02.Renault have fallen out with Robert Kubica. The team says he does not
:20:02. > :20:07.have a contract with them for next season, and in any case will not be
:20:07. > :20:12.fit to drive at the start of 2012. Robert Kubica's management say they
:20:12. > :20:17.cannot be sure of that. Meanwhile, HRT are beginning to style
:20:17. > :20:21.themselves into a Spanish national team. It is another comeback for
:20:21. > :20:26.the 40-year-old Pedro de la Rosa. It is another step in my career,
:20:26. > :20:32.surprising for many, but at the end of the day, I'm a racing driver, I
:20:32. > :20:35.want to race, this is where I belong. I'm very excited. Next
:20:35. > :20:39.year's US Grand Prix is set to be removed from the calendar, as work
:20:39. > :20:45.has stopped on the track, and the local government in Texas say they
:20:45. > :20:48.will not pay Bernie Eccleston's fees. Somebody has got the land and
:20:48. > :20:56.they have started to do something. I think the biggest problem they
:20:56. > :21:04.have got is a shortage of finance. So, it is unlikely to happen next
:21:04. > :21:10.year? I think it is most unlikely. And what about Bahrain for next
:21:10. > :21:15.year? We do not know. It is on the calendar, we will be there unless
:21:15. > :21:18.something terrible happens to stop us. There's now less than 40
:21:18. > :21:24.minutes to go until the start of qualifying. The crowd are getting
:21:24. > :21:28.excited. In four months' time, we will be in Australia for the first
:21:28. > :21:33.qualifying session of the new season, and Pedro de la Rosa will
:21:33. > :21:38.be in an HRT. That's two drivers on the grey who will be older than you.
:21:38. > :21:47.Can you imagine still driving yourself? I cannot, because I had a
:21:47. > :21:51.full 15 seasons. It is all down to the individual. We do not all age
:21:51. > :21:55.at the same rate. Pedro feels he has got unfinished business. Even
:21:55. > :21:58.if he does not realistically think he will get Grand Prix victories,
:21:58. > :22:02.it will take him on a journey which will clove of that particular part
:22:02. > :22:09.of his career. He may have equity in the King, it may be as simple as
:22:09. > :22:14.the fact that it is a special -- it is a Spanish Grand Prix team. In
:22:14. > :22:24.any event, it will be a massive challenge for him, even more so
:22:24. > :22:24.
:22:24. > :22:29.than for Michael Schumacher, in the Mercedes. We will let you go back
:22:29. > :22:33.to having your photo taken, David. And we can join Eddie, who was with
:22:33. > :22:36.another older statesmen of Formula 1. Not just statesman, but one of
:22:36. > :22:44.the greatest legends of the technical era of Grand Prix racing,
:22:44. > :22:47.Patrick Head, who, in 1980, was part of the great team that brought
:22:47. > :22:54.World Championship success. Alan Jones, we can remember - what has
:22:54. > :23:00.happened? I cannot remember that far back. I'm not asking that.
:23:00. > :23:05.we're paying the penalty for designing a car which is not good
:23:05. > :23:09.enough, and we have been hovering just outside the points, sometimes
:23:09. > :23:13.further out, and when you get no points, you get the sort of season
:23:13. > :23:19.but we have had. So, not good enough work over the winter, and
:23:19. > :23:25.not good enough development during the year at. You have been in a
:23:25. > :23:29.situation... Do you feel as if you have been squeezed out? If I am
:23:29. > :23:32.right, this is your last race in your current position? Well, we
:23:32. > :23:35.have got new, senior technical staff. When it came to the
:23:35. > :23:40.beginning of this year, and we found we were in pretty much the
:23:40. > :23:46.same position, we had no alternative but to make some senior
:23:47. > :23:50.position changes, and when I looked at it, I'm very confident in the
:23:50. > :23:54.new people, and when I looked at it, I did not really think that there
:23:54. > :24:00.was a position where I could seriously contribute. But I'm going
:24:00. > :24:04.on to do other things. One of my activities will be with what is
:24:04. > :24:08.called Williams Hybrid Pas. But if I turn up to Grand Prix his next
:24:08. > :24:13.year, I probably will not be wearing a Williams are shut. But I
:24:13. > :24:21.will be contacting your tailor and turning up in something more
:24:21. > :24:24.colourful than you, Eddie. -- a Williams shirt. Are you confident
:24:24. > :24:33.in these new people that they can bring you back to the glory days?
:24:33. > :24:37.Well, they are not all that young. With Mike and Jason on aerodynamics,
:24:37. > :24:47.and Mark winning it, they're not spring chickens. But I'm very
:24:47. > :24:47.
:24:47. > :24:50.confident that they will do a very good job. I see signs of some of
:24:50. > :24:54.what was present at Williams in the days when we were competitive,
:24:54. > :24:59.which, sadly, in recent years, has been rather missing. I'm very
:24:59. > :25:03.confident that they will have a strong future. Me for one, speaking
:25:03. > :25:08.all the time about football, but I shall miss you. We had better not
:25:08. > :25:12.tell them what team that is. And we would certainly reiterate that on
:25:12. > :25:20.behalf of the whole of the BBC. And I know that David would as well,
:25:20. > :25:25.because it was Williams that helped him launch his career in Formula 1.
:25:25. > :25:31.I think Eddie is talking about Chelsea, they're both Chelsea fans.
:25:31. > :25:35.You started your career at Williams, in 1995, with Damon Hill, they had
:25:35. > :25:39.just won for reconstruct as championships - what has gone
:25:39. > :25:49.wrong? They have just not designed a car which is good enough. It
:25:49. > :25:51.
:25:51. > :25:55.comes down to the people. -- Constructors' Championships. They
:25:55. > :25:57.had a long period of success, they dominated, but they are having a
:25:58. > :26:03.difficult time right now. Williams can get back to their former
:26:03. > :26:09.success, if they employ the right people. But is that enough? The old
:26:09. > :26:12.adage in Formula 1 goes, how fast can you afford to go? And this is a
:26:12. > :26:16.privateer team, they have not got the money. But that is a
:26:16. > :26:26.consequence of not having the success in the short time. The
:26:26. > :26:26.
:26:26. > :26:31.sponsors start to move on. Also, you do not get the FOM money. These
:26:31. > :26:34.other teams, people like Red Bull, have worked their way up. And that
:26:34. > :26:39.comes down to the other aspect of Formula 1, the commercial side of
:26:39. > :26:42.Williams, they have got to go out and sell the vision for the team.
:26:42. > :26:48.If they can get success on the track, then we will see the
:26:48. > :26:52.Williams flag flying again. As far as Patrick Head is concerned, I
:26:52. > :26:56.think he might be having quite a nice time next year. He's a real
:26:57. > :27:02.character. He will be missed, but thankfully, he will still be
:27:02. > :27:07.turning up at the odd Grand Prix. Let's see how that shirt
:27:07. > :27:10.competition goes on! Yes, that's bad news! Let's have a look at
:27:10. > :27:13.what's happening in the garage. This car belongs to Rubens
:27:13. > :27:18.Barrichello. It really looks like his Williams career is coming to an
:27:18. > :27:23.end. In fact, this weekend, is Formula 1 career could come to an
:27:23. > :27:27.end. After so long in the sport, it looks like his days are numbered.
:27:27. > :27:33.He has been discussing his career with his very first boss, a certain
:27:33. > :27:41.Eddie Jordan. Here we are again, Sao Paolo, your home town. Tell us
:27:41. > :27:46.a bit about your emotions coming here, soca. I was born in
:27:46. > :27:51.Interlagos, my heart is here, I have done my whole career here. It
:27:51. > :27:59.is such a good vibe. People do this with their hand and say, come on,
:27:59. > :28:04.you have got to do this. It is such a passion. It feels so nice.
:28:04. > :28:08.remember yourself, your father, your manager, sitting in the Jordan
:28:08. > :28:12.kitchen in Oxford and chatting about how you were going to make it
:28:12. > :28:15.possible to come to Formula 1 - have you any memories of that
:28:15. > :28:19.moment when kit I had a great time at the beginning of my career,
:28:19. > :28:25.because you gave me, not just the fact that it was a small team with
:28:25. > :28:28.not a lot of money, but we needed to learn how to survive a, to go
:28:28. > :28:35.fast when it mattered, and to finish the race when it mattered.
:28:35. > :28:45.It taught me a lot. There were two outstanding moments for me, your
:28:45. > :28:48.
:28:48. > :28:55.first ever pole position, in Spa... And also, the first podium, that
:28:55. > :29:00.was magical. Our first podium as well. Both moments, I remember. The
:29:00. > :29:04.podium was such a special moment. If you also remember, we were
:29:04. > :29:11.having a glass of champagne, and Ayrton came in to say
:29:11. > :29:17.congratulations. It was his penultimate ever race, if you call
:29:17. > :29:20.it like that. I was there, by myself, I opened my door, and the
:29:20. > :29:27.door on the other room opened as well, it was Ayrton, I could not
:29:27. > :29:34.believe my eyes. He said, we're going to Disney, can I join you? I
:29:34. > :29:42.tell you, maybe he did not have a cheeseburger for ages, because that
:29:42. > :29:45.day, he ate it like a kid. He must have been so strict. And that
:29:45. > :29:50.happened on the way to that race. It was such a memory. To get on the
:29:50. > :29:59.podium, it was a great weekend. Which takes us on to your darkest
:29:59. > :30:03.moment, Imola 1994. Looking back, were you surprised to see the
:30:03. > :30:06.ferocity of it, and how you got away with it? Yes, I remember
:30:06. > :30:09.turning in, the back end went, and turning in, the back end went, and
:30:09. > :30:16.that is the final thing I remember. But it caught my attention again
:30:16. > :30:25.when I saw the movie. Because on the big screen, it was such a big,
:30:25. > :30:30.big shunt. It was such a difficult weekend. Although I lost my memory
:30:30. > :30:38.with the accident and everything, it was vivid, I went back to
:30:38. > :30:43.England on that Sunday, and like almost the whole world, when Senna
:30:43. > :30:46.moved his head, I thought he was fine. Two days later, we were in
:30:46. > :30:52.Brazil for the funeral and so on, it was my first ever funeral, I was
:30:52. > :30:58.shocked. I have tried to tell the Brazilian people, don't worry, I
:30:58. > :31:02.will be there for you guys. I'm Brazilian, I love my country.
:31:02. > :31:08.People thought it was a promise, it was just a sad thing, because it
:31:08. > :31:18.just made it a pressure. I was then on the podium in Canada, and that
:31:18. > :31:25.
:31:25. > :31:32.emotional person! We all dropped 80 when you when your first race,
:31:33. > :31:39.Hockenheim, in the Ferrari. To be the first ever Brazilian driver to
:31:39. > :31:49.be driving for Ferrari, it was very emotional. Did I ever tell you what
:31:49. > :31:52.made me cry? I have cried my eyes out on that lap, and I said, I have
:31:52. > :32:02.quite enough, now it is OK, but when I went to the podium and I
:32:02. > :32:02.
:32:02. > :32:10.looked at the sky, I remember my father selling his Fiat to keep on
:32:10. > :32:17.going to go kart Championship. I thanked the sky for that, and it
:32:17. > :32:25.was so pure! It was such an emotional situation.
:32:25. > :32:28.Let it all out! Feel proud! 2002, 2004, runner up in the
:32:28. > :32:37.Drivers' Championship, team-mate to Michael Schumacher. Still good
:32:37. > :32:41.friends? Not any more? With a glass of wine in his hand, he can be very
:32:41. > :32:51.truthful. I enjoyed our times, but we do not have that relationship
:32:51. > :32:55.
:32:55. > :32:59.any more. Has Hungary had a harder impact as a result? No, but I was
:32:59. > :33:05.fighting for the points, and it is almost like a win, you are going
:33:05. > :33:15.for it. I said, who is the guy? When I saw it was Michael, it made
:33:15. > :33:19.
:33:19. > :33:24.me laugh, because I thought I would fight that forever. I have decided
:33:24. > :33:30.to quit Ferrari one year before my contract ended, because I could not
:33:30. > :33:39.take it any more. They would not give me the chance, it was all
:33:39. > :33:43.about Michael, so what could not sustain that environment. -- I
:33:43. > :33:53.could not sustain. They will be hearing more about his
:33:53. > :33:54.
:33:54. > :33:58.career in tomorrow's built up. Is this the final time he will take a
:33:58. > :34:01.Formula One car out? When you into the somebody, they give you one
:34:01. > :34:09.answer to the television cameras and a different impression
:34:10. > :34:15.otherwise. Did he give you any clue about next season? Rubens
:34:15. > :34:23.Barrichello is such an honest person. I have to be careful
:34:23. > :34:26.talking about drivers, but drivers sometimes do not tell you the truth.
:34:26. > :34:31.Rubens Barrichello is a different class of person. He should have
:34:31. > :34:35.achieved more. I do not know what he will do. He has not got a
:34:35. > :34:43.contract for next year, he would like to have one. But I do not
:34:44. > :34:50.think he will Hawkins of around the teams. If he gets the Williams
:34:50. > :34:56.driver, he will always be an asset, because he never crashes, and he
:34:56. > :35:02.has the speed, but these new guys are very good. Is the classic
:35:02. > :35:09.driver with unfinished business? He has taken part in a third of all of
:35:09. > :35:16.the Grand Prix ever. But he has always been a bridesmaid. Yes, our
:35:16. > :35:19.careers have mirrored each other. We did not quite get the last
:35:19. > :35:23.little bit of performance. But there comes a point when you have
:35:23. > :35:28.to weigh up what is a realistic chance of me ever achieve in the
:35:28. > :35:36.ultimate goal. You have got to win races to win championships and the
:35:36. > :35:42.clock is ticking. Many times, people will take the potential of
:35:42. > :35:47.youth, potential is such a potent word. Sometimes that wins over the
:35:47. > :35:54.known quantity. I think Rubens Barrichello is an asset, but he
:35:54. > :36:03.will not knock-on the door of any of the top teams. He has had 11
:36:03. > :36:08.wins in his career. You employed young drivers. Maybe because there
:36:08. > :36:11.is that potential, that BT, that perhaps he will be the next Michael
:36:11. > :36:17.Schumacher or Sebastian Vettel? That has gone for Rubens
:36:17. > :36:23.Barrichello. When he was 19, he had a budget, he had a great history,
:36:23. > :36:29.and I do not think it was a big risk. He was brilliant at that time.
:36:29. > :36:34.He was so motivated. He was better at selling the team and the
:36:34. > :36:37.sponsorship than anybody else. I have this huge respect for him. But
:36:37. > :36:43.I think he should leave with dignity, he has a lot going for him
:36:43. > :36:51.in the future, I would hate to see him struggle like this year. I
:36:51. > :36:58.would like to see him go in a good way. There is a lot to be said for
:36:58. > :37:03.that. Ayrton Senna was driving a Williams when he passed away in
:37:03. > :37:07.1994. Since then, they have carried his logo on their cars, and 20
:37:07. > :37:14.years since he won his last Brazilian Grand Prix, what a
:37:14. > :37:18.touching tribute that is. The name is obviously a name of the past.
:37:18. > :37:22.Pastor Maldonado, Rubens Barrichello, names of the present.
:37:22. > :37:29.What about names of the future? They have been getting a chance to
:37:29. > :37:37.impress. British GP to driver testing for
:37:37. > :37:47.Force India. Mercedes test driver. Testing for Virgin. Test driver,
:37:47. > :37:55.
:37:55. > :38:01.the young drivers test. We found there was a whole and and drivers
:38:01. > :38:05.were not getting an opportunity to try Formula One cars. It is a
:38:05. > :38:13.fantastic feeling, to get into a Formula One car. It is every boy's
:38:13. > :38:17.dream. I thought, what am I doing here? To be enjoying every minute,
:38:17. > :38:23.it is amazing. It is good to look at what talent is coming through
:38:23. > :38:30.the ranks. There is no better way of doing it and putting them into a
:38:30. > :38:34.car. I started in go-karting. I worked up from there, and I went
:38:34. > :38:39.from Formula Three to GP to, and this is my first Formula One test.
:38:39. > :38:44.Really excited, looking forward to helping the team developed the car.
:38:44. > :38:48.Any feedback is crucial. I have got to do the best job I can, so the
:38:48. > :38:51.engineers can look through the data and make sure that we go forward.
:38:52. > :38:58.If we can bring on some new components and do some development
:38:58. > :39:05.for the future races, we will not let it compromise our plan, because
:39:05. > :39:09.we are here to get as many miles on them as we can. I did two days in
:39:09. > :39:19.the World Series, and I am here doing formal one. It is great to
:39:19. > :39:22.
:39:22. > :39:29.have an insight of what I am aiming for. It also allows us to print
:39:29. > :39:35.people through the ranks. -- bring people. We have got people in mind
:39:35. > :39:41.for new positions, and we try them out. It is a dream come true to get
:39:41. > :39:47.the call from Mercedes have. I'd crossed opportunity with both hands.
:39:47. > :39:53.Now, I have got a job with the team. Working out what has happened so
:39:53. > :39:56.far, there are drivers doing a good job. We are seeing the future of
:39:56. > :40:06.Formula One, we have to keep developing and allowing for these
:40:06. > :40:07.
:40:07. > :40:14.youngsters to show us how good bail. -- how good they are off.
:40:14. > :40:21.They are ready in the garage. 20 minutes to go until qualifying. We
:40:21. > :40:27.are here with a man who had to be a star of the future. A Brazilian boy,
:40:27. > :40:35.living in Norwich. Will we see you in Formula One in the not-too-
:40:35. > :40:41.distant future? The plant is to enter as soon as possible. 2012 is
:40:41. > :40:47.difficult, but 2013 not promising. Is always difficult to get into
:40:47. > :40:53.Formula One, there are a lot of drivers with talent and the budget.
:40:53. > :40:58.It is not an easy job. The talent is already there, we can understand
:40:58. > :41:05.that, but what is the going rate? What do you need to bring to a team
:41:05. > :41:11.like Lotus to secure your seat? would be nice to bring a big brand
:41:11. > :41:21.to Formula One again. The figures, it depends on what the contract
:41:21. > :41:27.this. It depends. It would be nice to have a big brand to come to
:41:27. > :41:33.Lotus or to any other team. Is it below $10 million or above? It is a
:41:33. > :41:37.big number, 10 million. Probably we can expect around six or seven. But
:41:37. > :41:44.10 million would be very good! Those are the kind of numbers we
:41:44. > :41:49.are talking about. You put in some good lap times ahead of Hispania
:41:49. > :41:55.and Virgin. Roman Grayshott has been looking for a second chance in
:41:55. > :42:02.Formula One. Yes, he has done seven races, and
:42:02. > :42:07.he is still a young driver. Tell us about the challenges of this track.
:42:07. > :42:14.The challenge is to have fun in the car, that is the main thing. After
:42:14. > :42:22.two years, in Abu Dhabi I was so excited, like a kid at Christmas,
:42:22. > :42:28.it was fantastic. The way Formula One is going is so impressive and
:42:28. > :42:36.so enjoyable, I was very happy. The session went quite well. I was
:42:36. > :42:43.pleased with the performance, and I was quite quick in the car. This is
:42:43. > :42:47.where I want to be. We can see your enthusiasm. We were talking about
:42:47. > :42:53.the young drivers printing money to get their drivers. Is that a
:42:53. > :42:58.situation you would be in? Or is it on performance? At the moment, it
:42:58. > :43:03.is quite difficult for everybody, because the pitch that has have
:43:03. > :43:06.left Formula One, it is more like a private team that needs funds. You
:43:06. > :43:11.are trying to put everything together to get a seat and to have
:43:11. > :43:19.the chance to race. But hopefully, talent is important, and I keep my
:43:19. > :43:23.fingers crossed for next year. the best.
:43:23. > :43:28.Less than 15 minutes to go until we get into qualifying. How sad is it
:43:28. > :43:36.to hear somebody like him St that hopefully a little bit of talent
:43:36. > :43:43.helps as well? It should not be about the millions. This is not
:43:43. > :43:50.like any other sport. It costs four chins to get the show on the road -
:43:50. > :43:54.- it costs a fortune. Therefore, it is expected that, if you are an
:43:54. > :43:58.integral part of the team, you are required to drink some commercial
:43:58. > :44:05.benefit along the way, because there are too many other drivers
:44:05. > :44:13.two can do that. The team bosses make those decisions. Sebastien
:44:13. > :44:17.Buemi did not take part in the final part of practice. It is the
:44:17. > :44:22.future of young drivers like him that is decided by a team bosses.
:44:22. > :44:28.One race to go, any decision on your future? I still do not know.
:44:28. > :44:37.Hopefully, we will have a good race. I try to concentrate too much on
:44:37. > :44:42.this weekend, then we will see. saw you on the scales! No comment!
:44:42. > :44:49.The team bosses decide on the future of the younger men like him,
:44:49. > :44:54.but who are they? Where have they come from?
:44:54. > :45:00.Behind every team is a team boss. Behind every driver, a person who
:45:00. > :45:08.decides the fate. Behind every car, the principal, who handles the
:45:08. > :45:13.pressure of competition. I thought I had worked hard all my life, but
:45:13. > :45:16.will I came into Formula One. I had never scratched the surface!
:45:16. > :45:26.Sometimes, we believe we are facing the biggest problem in the world,
:45:26. > :45:30.
:45:30. > :45:34.bring it on yourself because of your competitiveness. There's all
:45:34. > :45:40.sorts of challenges, engineering, political and many others.
:45:40. > :45:46.never know what the next challenge will be. In Formula 1, never give
:45:46. > :45:52.up, because it is a rocky road. have to be very determined, you
:45:52. > :46:01.need to know what you want. You need to enjoy it and be passionate
:46:01. > :46:11.about it. At the moment, Vitaly is doing his homework, talking to the
:46:11. > :46:23.
:46:23. > :46:28.side. Newscast: aerodynamicist Ross Brawn is back in the wind tunnel.
:46:28. > :46:34.Every team boss has come up in a different way. Christian Horner is
:46:34. > :46:44.an ex-racing driver. NEWSREEL: Christian Horner has no
:46:44. > :46:44.
:46:44. > :46:48.doubt about where his ambitions lie. I have grown up in motor sport. I
:46:48. > :46:54.came to the attention of Red Bull when Dietrich asked me to join the
:46:54. > :46:59.team right at the beginning. I had just won three consecutive Formula
:46:59. > :47:09.3,000 championships. This is my family, I spend more time with them
:47:09. > :47:09.
:47:09. > :47:14.than with anybody else. Bringing the contract. Ready to sign. You
:47:14. > :47:18.will be blamed for anything you do. Very small, but very useful office.
:47:18. > :47:23.The only satisfaction you can get is when your people are happy to
:47:23. > :47:28.work with you, and when you win races. Is it more important to be
:47:28. > :47:32.liked or respected as a team boss? I think the most important is to be
:47:32. > :47:38.respected. You cannot make people like you at the end of the day.
:47:38. > :47:42.is more important to win. If you can win, it helps. I do not think
:47:42. > :47:47.you need to be liked. I would like to be respected and liked at the
:47:47. > :47:50.same time, but in terms of quality is, you just need to be pretty
:47:50. > :47:55.determined, but capable of long hours, and have a strong sense of
:47:55. > :47:59.humour, because your patience will be tested quite frequently. Have
:47:59. > :48:06.you ever had a team boss who has been a complete lunatic? Eddie
:48:06. > :48:16.Jordan. It is winning which makes it worth it, releasing the pressure
:48:16. > :48:16.
:48:17. > :48:22.if only for a few hours. For people like Ron Dennis and Jean Todd, Ken
:48:22. > :48:27.Tyrrell, to the old man himself, Enzo Ferrari, the reward is in
:48:27. > :48:37.Enzo Ferrari, the reward is in building the gins. And if wins
:48:37. > :48:39.
:48:39. > :48:44.create legends, then one man has been the best at that. I think Timo
:48:44. > :48:48.Glock might not have been wise to give that answer, Eddie! I will
:48:48. > :48:53.have to go and talk to him about those remarks, and the remarks
:48:53. > :48:58.which were made afterwards off camera. They're all a bit too nice
:48:58. > :49:02.these days. In your day, the team bosses owned the teams. I think
:49:02. > :49:06.there was also a lot more pressure on you. I can remember the stress,
:49:06. > :49:11.I did not know what to do with it, I had a permanent headache. The
:49:11. > :49:14.reason was because it was your cash that was on the line, you had to
:49:14. > :49:20.call the bank manager. Bank managers do not cash promises, let
:49:20. > :49:24.me tell you that. You're in there on your own. David, you're going to

:49:28. > :49:33.good fun. Yes, as you say, it is the second shortest lap on the
:49:33. > :49:38.calendar, the shortest lap time of all. That is going to make it
:49:38. > :49:43.incredibly close. What we have seen in free practice suggests that we
:49:43. > :49:47.could get a few surprises at the back end of the top 10, and it is
:49:47. > :49:51.by no means certain that it will be the usual suspects sitting on pole

:51:01. > :51:08.at the speed! We have got up to 60 kilometres an hour, without putting

:51:15. > :51:19.had been champion in many different classes, you put yourself in the
:51:19. > :51:24.shop window in qualifying, and yet so keen not racing - how can we
:51:24. > :51:31.explain that to the people at home? We can explain it because Formula 1
:51:31. > :51:36.is very much money-driven. Williams had a bit of a financial situation,
:51:36. > :51:42.they needed someone who could fund the team. Is it 100% that you will
:51:42. > :51:48.be racing next year? It is a two- digit higher percentage number. I
:51:48. > :51:51.have just got to be patient for one or two more weeks. This is the
:51:51. > :51:56.second slowest corner on the track, it is pretty tricky, isn't it?
:51:56. > :52:03.because you come up the hill, it is a very fast corner. At the top of

:52:13. > :52:15.
:52:15. > :52:21.tricky. I can spot another racing driver. I did not know that you
:52:21. > :52:26.could do impersonations, that Australian impersonation?
:52:26. > :52:33.Impersonation? Imitating. That's all I can do. I used to imitate

:52:43. > :52:45.
:52:45. > :52:53.Did you not put the handbrake on? When you were here last year, did
:52:53. > :52:57.you know you were heading for pole position? No, it felt good, though.
:52:57. > :53:03.Lap after lap, it went better and better. It was one of the trickiest

:55:38. > :55:40.
:55:40. > :55:48.blink of the eye can be the equivalent of a row on the grid of
:55:48. > :55:57.the shortest race track in the calendar. Everybody wants to beat
:55:57. > :56:00.top dog in this, the last race before the winter. The track is
:56:00. > :56:07.anti-clockwise and tough on the neck, with lots of Contador changes,
:56:07. > :56:10.too. There is some talk of a thunder storm brewing up later in
:56:10. > :56:16.the afternoon. Will it interfere with qualifying? We think not, at
:56:16. > :56:22.the moment, but rain is forecast for tomorrow, race day. And there
:56:22. > :56:28.are added challenges. Finding a clear lap is always a problem here.
:56:28. > :56:34.Maximising the use of the DRS rear wing and KERS as well on this track,

:56:39. > :56:44.do you think the teams will go into qualifying today with the rain in
:56:44. > :56:51.mind? DAVID COULTHARD: Formula 1 has
:56:51. > :56:58.evolved, the difference between a wet set-up and a dry set-up has got
:56:58. > :57:01.closer. There will always be a bit of benefit in pushing the car more
:57:01. > :57:11.into the race track, but you still have the same length of straight in
:57:11. > :57:12.
:57:12. > :57:15.the wet. The need to accelerate the car becomes even more, of Cuba.
:57:16. > :57:21.Some of the teams are saying, we do not have a big difference between

:57:31. > :57:33.
:57:33. > :57:39.that's it. Of course, the wet tyres lift the ride height of the car by

:57:43. > :57:49.fuel in preparation for qualifying. The average fuel load for the race,
:57:49. > :57:52.they will start this race with just over 140 kilos of fuel. It uses

:58:03. > :58:10.RADIO: We may get some rain during qualifying. If we will -- if so, we

:58:17. > :58:21.you think his most under pressure in this qualifying? I think it
:58:21. > :58:26.would be one of the Renaults or one of the Saubers, being most under
:58:26. > :58:32.pressure in qualifying. It is a short racetrack, really difficult
:58:32. > :58:40.to find perfect temperature. You only have 15% of the lap spent
:58:40. > :58:44.under braking. Before you know it, so key on the long flat-out section,
:58:45. > :58:48.coming into turn one. If your brake temperatures are not what they
:58:48. > :58:55.should be, then you compromise your entry speed, and you cannot afford
:58:55. > :58:59.to leave any lap ton behind in qualifying. It is one of five anti-
:58:59. > :59:08.clockwise circuits on the calendar. It is tough on the left-hand side

:59:12. > :59:17.man who has been on pole position here three times and won the race
:59:17. > :59:23.twice. Barrichello has been on pole position twice here, and so has the

:59:36. > :59:45.starting in 45 seconds. That is not going to help their chances, coming
:59:45. > :59:49.out early. But they will get more than one run of course, so they're
:59:49. > :59:53.just trying to get a bit of track position. There's a man who could
:59:53. > :59:58.do with his fourth pole position of the season, and to get on top of
:59:58. > :00:03.Sebastian Vettel before they head into the winter, Mark Webber.
:00:03. > :00:08.another thought, these guys will be sitting there longer than Sebastian

:16:42. > :16:49.this morning, has had a problem in the middle part of the lap. He will
:16:49. > :16:56.get another effort. He had an awful middle sector. I don't know if it
:16:56. > :17:06.was traffic or a problem. Let's see what Lotus can do. Kovalainen has
:17:06. > :17:07.
:17:07. > :17:17.pitted, Jarno Trulli is ahead of him at the moment. Kobayashi has
:17:17. > :17:26.fallen down to 16th. He's going for his second hot lap on these tyres.
:17:26. > :17:36.He has got Jerome d'Ambrosio ahead of him. Coming through what used to
:17:36. > :17:44.
:17:44. > :17:53.be one of the most terrifying Coming up there, hitting the KERS,
:17:53. > :17:59.giving you another 80 horse power. Michael Schumacher did not go any
:17:59. > :18:05.faster. Massa has gone out on the soft tyres. Sebastien Buemi has got
:18:05. > :18:10.himself in, in 16th. So, it is Maldonado once again under pressure.
:18:10. > :18:16.We're on board with him. Coming up to the finish line. You have got
:18:16. > :18:26.constant G-force, 16 seconds at full throttle. Driving to the
:18:26. > :18:36.finish line, Maldonado, 18th, did not go faster, he is in trouble.
:18:36. > :19:02.
:19:02. > :19:09.Maldonado in 18th place, really under pressure.
:19:09. > :19:16.DAVID COULTHARD: You definitely do not want to get out over that
:19:16. > :19:26.curved handle bar and he paid the price. Bruno Senna looks safe
:19:26. > :19:27.
:19:27. > :19:37.enough, but Adrian Sutil will not be feeling that confident. So,
:19:37. > :19:41.
:19:41. > :19:51.Perez is in at the moment. 30 seconds remaining. Just eight cars
:19:51. > :19:55.
:19:55. > :20:02.out on track. He was just too wide as he went through turn seven.
:20:02. > :20:08.You're unsighted at that point., isn't it? Raikkonen we're hearing
:20:08. > :20:13.will not go to Williams next year, that has all fallen over. We just
:20:13. > :20:19.got a quick shot of Patrick Head, on the pit wall, a man who's coming
:20:19. > :20:28.to his last Grand Prix officially for Williams. Alonso is on track as
:20:28. > :20:34.well, as is Sebastien Buemi. It is just a personal battle really
:20:34. > :20:38.between the two Lotus drivers. Jarno Trulli is ahead of Kovalainen
:20:38. > :20:48.for the third time this year at the moment, but it is Kovalainen who
:20:48. > :20:50.
:20:50. > :20:58.changes that with a 15.0. This is just a grudge match within Team
:20:58. > :21:01.Lotus, changing its name of course next year to Caterham. I think
:21:01. > :21:05.they're going to keep the same colours. Jarno Trulli, another
:21:05. > :21:13.personal best in the middle sector. This is going to be very close
:21:13. > :21:21.indeed to getting ahead of his teammate. It does not do it. He's a
:21:21. > :21:26.third of the second shy of beating Heikki Kovalainen. That makes it
:21:26. > :21:32.16-2 to Kovalainen. The first big scalp to fall, Maldonado, for
:21:32. > :21:38.Williams. That was on the cards. Barrichello was in 11th place. At
:21:39. > :21:42.the moment, it is McLaren 1 and two. Serious frustration for Pastor
:21:42. > :21:52.Maldonado. Those other drivers who will not be taking part in the
:21:52. > :21:57.
:21:57. > :22:01.second part of qualifying. Look at that, Ricardo and Liuzzi. Always a
:22:01. > :22:05.difficult question, Timo Glock, the reasons for you being the slowest
:22:05. > :22:09.car out there today? It has been a terrible day so far. Yesterday the
:22:09. > :22:14.car was OK. Since this morning, we have completely lost the balance of
:22:14. > :22:20.the car. I could not even manage to do a lap this morning on the soft
:22:20. > :22:23.tyre. After half a lap, the tyre was already gone at the back. We
:22:23. > :22:28.changed the set-up for qualifying, but still I was a bit unlucky, I
:22:28. > :22:38.had traffic, one of the Toro Rossos came out in front of me and stayed
:22:38. > :22:40.
:22:40. > :22:45.the whole lap in front of me. That was the problem. So I lost a couple
:22:45. > :22:49.of tenths there. We start from the back, that's it. Trying to put a
:22:49. > :22:58.positive spin on these things. I wanted to ask you, going forward,
:22:58. > :23:02.what will you going to do for next year? That's what we're working on.
:23:02. > :23:09.We have got the people in place now, we have got a technical partnership
:23:09. > :23:13.with McLaren, which is good, but in the end, we have to decide things
:23:13. > :23:17.on our own. It will be tough at the start of next year, but the
:23:17. > :23:24.possibilities are different, so that's positive. Jerome d'Ambrosio,
:23:24. > :23:27.we know that the Virgin name will disappear next year, but there are
:23:27. > :23:32.rumours that you might be disappearing as well. Can you
:23:32. > :23:38.explain to us? At the moment, there are discussions going on, but
:23:38. > :23:43.nothing is fixed. I cannot say much. Why not, you can trust us? You know
:23:43. > :23:48.Jake would not tell anyone. Tell us what's going on. Hopefully I will
:23:48. > :23:58.be on that grid again, that's what I'm fighting for. It is not easy. I
:23:58. > :24:01.
:24:01. > :24:05.just have to keep fighting. Timo Glock, in your team next year, have
:24:05. > :24:10.you been given assurances about the funding under plans for 2012? You
:24:10. > :24:15.do not want to stay in a team which is at the back of the grid? No-one
:24:15. > :24:19.wants to be in that position. That goes for everyone in the team.
:24:19. > :24:25.Desperately we want to go forward. We are working on that. The plan is
:24:25. > :24:28.pretty building for the future. We will try our best. What is the
:24:28. > :24:33.plan? To be in the middle of the pack somewhere, fighting regularly
:24:33. > :24:43.for top 10 finishes, maybe not next year, but in the future. Jerome,
:24:43. > :24:44.
:24:44. > :24:49.what kind of a teammate was he? still is! He's a good teammate.
:24:49. > :24:57.He's not as good as he looks, but he's all right, not bad. That's
:24:57. > :25:01.great, the honesty of all of this! You ask the same question! What
:25:01. > :25:05.kind of teammate is Jerome? He's tough, he gave me some hard times.
:25:05. > :25:12.We worked very well together, very good guy, the technical feedback,
:25:12. > :25:16.we were on the same page, it is good fun to work with him. We will
:25:16. > :25:20.let you go and speak to the rest of the world's media. But we're
:25:20. > :25:27.hearing that the Virgin name is gone, the Russian sports car
:25:27. > :25:35.producer comes in. Sadly, Jerome will be disappearing from Formula
:25:35. > :25:39.1? It is too early to say. He was still optimistic. Things can flow
:25:39. > :25:44.and change so quickly in Formula 1. I would not rule anybody out at
:25:44. > :25:48.this stage. He obviously has something up his sleeve. Looking
:25:48. > :25:54.ahead to the next session, it may well rain. We saw some incredible
:25:54. > :26:00.rain in 2009. The cars will go out early again we expect in this
:26:00. > :26:04.session, just to be safe. I have always been critical of teams for
:26:04. > :26:13.not getting a banker in place. It does not make sense to just sit and
:26:13. > :26:20.wait. Get out there, put a lap in the bag, and take it from there.
:26:21. > :26:27.this is 2009, on screen at the moment, but back to 2011, and
:26:27. > :26:34.Martin Brundle. You had me looking out of the window there! You were
:26:34. > :26:41.playing something from 2009! Qualifying will be restarting in
:26:41. > :26:46.around 30 seconds. Soft tyres on so many of those cars. Ted Kravitz...
:26:46. > :26:50.I have just had a look at the radar in one of the garages, and it says
:26:50. > :26:55.the rain is coming. It is closer than 10 kilometres now. That's the
:26:55. > :27:00.information which the teams are getting. In the pit lane, all I can
:27:00. > :27:06.see his blue sky. But it is coming in from the direction of the first
:27:06. > :27:15.corner, we are told. That's often where the rain turns up first of
:27:15. > :27:23.all here. We reckon it is about 30 minutes away. That is why we are
:27:23. > :27:31.seeing so much frantic activity. The green light is on. And we are
:27:31. > :27:39.under way in Q2. A lot of drivers are on the soft tyre, they want to
:27:39. > :27:43.get a banker lap in. They do indeed. Those who should have a bit in
:27:43. > :27:47.reserve, like McLaren and Ferrari and Red Bull, then it should be
:27:47. > :27:55.just a case of doing a tidy lap. For those scurrying for the honour
:27:55. > :28:00.of getting in the top 10, it will be more work than that. It is very
:28:00. > :28:10.difficult to get a clear lap in order short-track like this. Very
:28:10. > :28:12.
:28:12. > :28:16.difficult to get the positioning right, and to get tyre temperature.
:28:16. > :28:22.Driving this slowly does not help your ability to get heat into the
:28:22. > :28:32.brakes. He was just backing-up, trying to find some space. We have
:28:32. > :28:32.
:28:32. > :28:37.got 17 cars on the track. We have lost Maldonado, Kovalainen, Liuzzi
:28:37. > :28:41.and Glock, among others. We are now looking to get rid of seven more.
:28:41. > :28:48.Force India, it seems, are looking most likely to get through, but
:28:48. > :28:52.they did use an extra set of tyres in the first part of qualifying.
:28:52. > :28:56.That is Adrian Sutil, a man fighting for his seat I think in
:28:56. > :29:06.Force India. And we hear he's talking to Renault and Williams
:29:06. > :29:10.
:29:10. > :29:20.about next year. Hulkenberg, who I'm a very big fan of, is a
:29:20. > :29:32.
:29:32. > :29:36.You can see the bushes at the side of the racetrack blowing around. It
:29:36. > :29:43.is pretty breezy. They think the weather is coming in. Adrian Sutil
:29:44. > :29:52.is homing in on the finish line. That gives him a 1:13.2, which is a
:29:52. > :29:56.pretty solid lap. It now says, no rain within the next 30 minutes,
:29:56. > :30:02.and yet the team have been telling their drivers to get a lap in, it
:30:02. > :30:07.is going to rain! DAVID COULTHARD: Unless they have
:30:07. > :30:17.got someone in a tall building chucking a bucket of water out,
:30:17. > :30:22.
:30:22. > :30:29.Here comes Mark Webber, let's see what he has got to offer us. That's
:30:29. > :30:35.half a second shy of his teammate. Hamilton still fourth, Alonso fifth.
:30:35. > :30:42.Senna is down in eighth. And now it is what -- Rosberg up in second.
:30:42. > :30:52.That's a very good time indeed. Button is now up in third. Remember,
:30:52. > :30:54.
:30:54. > :31:04.this is not for the grid position, it just gives us 11 to 17 on the
:31:04. > :31:12.
:31:12. > :31:17.having just started a hot lap. Sebastian bore any locks up. As
:31:17. > :31:26.soon as you apply any kind of steering Glock, you unload the
:31:26. > :31:30.steering tyre. That is what is happening there with Michael. It
:31:30. > :31:40.depends on the bonds and other things, but it is the inside wheel
:31:40. > :31:44.
:31:44. > :31:52.that will not, because it is slightly lighter. Mark Webber, 12.6.
:31:52. > :32:00.Lewis Hamilton has done the fastest first sector. That corner used to
:32:00. > :32:06.be terrifying, but now they take a rest. I am getting the impression
:32:06. > :32:10.that the track used to scare you! lot! There was no way to go, and it
:32:10. > :32:20.was so bumpy, and the cars were leaping around. They have got
:32:20. > :32:21.
:32:21. > :32:29.different challenges now. Quite a lot of camper. -- camber. This is
:32:29. > :32:35.where the old track used to be. He banked circuit. Lewis Hamilton is
:32:35. > :32:45.still a bit off the fastest time. This is all about getting into the
:32:45. > :32:48.
:32:48. > :32:51.top 10. Lewis Hamilton still 0.4 seconds off the pace. New helmet
:32:51. > :32:57.colours for Felipe Massa. How can you be sure it is Felipe Massa in
:32:57. > :33:07.there? We do not recognise his helmet. They could put anybody in
:33:07. > :33:08.
:33:08. > :33:14.there! Were you a whole may change it? Very rarely. Jenson Button has
:33:14. > :33:22.finished. Ted Kravitz? A cracking up from Nico Rosberg. Michael
:33:22. > :33:26.Schumacher will have to go again, he is not happy at all. Force India
:33:26. > :33:36.seems to be in trouble, they have already burned through two sets of
:33:36. > :33:40.
:33:40. > :33:45.soft tyres. Let's see what they do. Nico Rosberg up there in second
:33:45. > :33:55.place. Michael Schumacher has always been handy around here. He
:33:55. > :33:57.
:33:57. > :34:07.has won here four times. In 2006, in his first career, he was mighty.
:34:07. > :34:09.
:34:09. > :34:17.I was reading some notes, thank you for giving me the Ku! -- cue!
:34:17. > :34:21.but he has had results on every track. What is the secret here?
:34:21. > :34:29.have to be patient in the middle sector, and you have to go over
:34:29. > :34:36.speed the entries in certain places. If you to the classic braking and
:34:36. > :34:41.positioning, you cannot get on the power. You have to go over speed
:34:41. > :34:47.the entry, to gain the lap time that you will end up losing on the
:34:47. > :34:51.exit, but it is in the bank. The first corner is all about making
:34:51. > :35:01.sure you have got your temperature set for the start of the lap. I'd
:35:01. > :35:01.
:35:01. > :35:08.used to have a light, it was on until I had optimal temperature.
:35:09. > :35:14.Once the light went off, I knew I could have confidence. You go way
:35:14. > :35:20.past the 50 metre board, you are on top of the corner. You are staring
:35:20. > :35:28.into the eyes of the fans in the grandstand. The tyres of warm. That
:35:28. > :35:38.is not a great surprise. We could do with a gauge, telling us what
:35:38. > :35:52.
:35:52. > :35:58.temperature that is. If it rains the grid, they have always been
:35:58. > :36:04.strong in Formula One. To be nationalistic, a great effort from
:36:04. > :36:07.Bruno Senna, it would be fantastic if he could stay there. The
:36:07. > :36:14.Brazilians have been camped out here since we arrived this morning,
:36:14. > :36:22.singing to themselves. It is almost like a carnival. Another young
:36:23. > :36:29.driver there, aiming at the seat. We have got all of these young
:36:29. > :36:39.drivers, and somebody like Pedro de la Rosa signs a deal with Hispania,
:36:39. > :36:41.
:36:41. > :36:46.39 or 40 years old! They spend money and there is no way to go.
:36:46. > :36:52.Lots of fit, young drivers, and the escalator is blocked. It could be
:36:52. > :37:02.worse, at least there are 24 seats on the grid. I expect the pay is
:37:02. > :37:14.
:37:14. > :37:23.will time is irrelevant. -- your time. We just saw Paul di Resta
:37:23. > :37:27.leave the pits, his final set of software will four. -- soft tyres.
:37:27. > :37:33.When they have qualified in the top 10, they do not run, because they
:37:33. > :37:39.have blown their tyres. At least they have got a good slot, but I do
:37:39. > :37:49.not understand why they do not get a lap time in. We will talk about
:37:49. > :37:50.
:37:50. > :37:57.that in a while. Jaime Alguersuari just outside the top 10. Adrian
:37:58. > :38:07.Sutil has gone out. Still in the pits, the first few drivers. I
:38:07. > :38:17.suspect they will not go again. I suspect everybody behind Adrian
:38:17. > :38:24.
:38:24. > :38:31.Sutil, including Felipe Massa, will Jaime Alguersuari still shy of the
:38:31. > :38:39.best. Let's watch him over the line. This is where the end of the pit
:38:39. > :38:45.wall is, it scares me! That is better from Jaime Alguersuari, but
:38:45. > :38:51.not good enough. Ted Kravitz? Felipe Massa has a new set of soft
:38:52. > :39:01.tyres. He used these used set for the first run, so he has got
:39:02. > :39:02.
:39:02. > :39:12.another set for Q3. A quick weather Report, it is now San'a. -- it is
:39:12. > :39:17.
:39:17. > :39:21.about the weather? The information they were being given was that the
:39:21. > :39:28.rain was coming, so either the radar was wrong, and we have seen
:39:28. > :39:35.that happen, or it was picking up a thunderstorm that has moved away
:39:36. > :39:43.from the circuit. That is more likely. Paul di Resta stays 10th,
:39:43. > :39:48.he will be under pressure. Michael Schumacher has gone out. This is
:39:48. > :39:58.Felipe Massa starting his final flying lap on the new tyres. Let's
:39:58. > :39:59.
:39:59. > :40:09.get into the top 10. He has got a bit of traffic. He will pass that,
:40:09. > :40:15.down into the braking zone. Look at how much time he has lost. He has
:40:15. > :40:20.got no choice, he knows that dropping that amount of time, you
:40:20. > :40:26.are not going to get the job done, so he has got to save the tyres and
:40:26. > :40:32.then deliver it on his final flying lap. He is under a little bit of
:40:33. > :40:37.pressure. Paul di Resta has not managed to improve. We think it is
:40:37. > :40:46.Felipe Massa in that helmet! We do not have proved! But we did see
:40:46. > :40:54.through the helmet. You could put anybody in it! This is where he got
:40:54. > :41:01.it wrong. That is where they will open the door ers tomorrow as well.
:41:01. > :41:11.-- opened the DRS. The furore is having difficulty cutting occurred
:41:11. > :41:11.
:41:11. > :41:21.through the second corner -- furore. Michael Schumacher, not a very good
:41:21. > :41:25.first sector, but the best middle sector. RADIO: Loss of power.
:41:25. > :41:34.Michael Schumacher just gets into the top 10, displacing Paul di
:41:34. > :41:39.Resta. Sergio Perez is out there as well. Sebastien Buemi, 14th, having
:41:39. > :41:48.gone 10 seconds slower in the middle sector. This is Bruno Senna,
:41:48. > :41:53.still ninth. He has done an OK first sector. He is inside the
:41:53. > :42:00.first -- inside the top 10. Paul di Resta are under serious pressure.
:42:00. > :42:10.Sebastian Vettel did not go out. First to sixth did not go out. At
:42:10. > :42:10.
:42:10. > :42:16.the moment, nine cars on the track. Bruno Senna going quite slowly. The
:42:16. > :42:26.flag drops to end Q2. Bruno Senna is ninth. He has made a mistake
:42:26. > :42:26.
:42:26. > :42:36.somewhere. Paul di Resta did not quite make it. What can Rubens
:42:36. > :42:42.
:42:42. > :42:49.Barrichello deliver?, on! -- come on! Confirmation of the end of the
:42:49. > :42:54.session. Vitaly Petrov, 15th. He is way behind Bruno Senna. Michael
:42:54. > :43:00.Schumacher has pitted. It has given up on any further laps. Rubens
:43:00. > :43:10.Barrichello has done a poor middle sector. He is putting as well. It
:43:10. > :43:24.
:43:24. > :43:34.side by side. Paul di Resta will start 11th. Alongside Rubens
:43:34. > :43:44.Barrichello. Jaime Alguersuari ahead of Sebastien Buemi. That
:43:44. > :43:48.makes it 12-7 to Sebastien Buemi. Vitaly Petrov, 15th, and Kamui
:43:48. > :43:52.Kobayashi and Sergio Perez side by side.
:43:52. > :43:56.His uncle was a two-time winner around the circuit, so this will
:43:56. > :44:03.feel very good indeed for Bruno Senna. Vitaly Petrov did not make
:44:03. > :44:09.it through. A great lap from Bruno Senna. We will see how he does in a
:44:09. > :44:13.few moments. Another strong lap from Nico Rosberg. The second
:44:13. > :44:22.fastest lap in that session, but surely anything better than that
:44:22. > :44:26.We are here with a man who knows what it takes to win championships
:44:26. > :44:30.in Formula 1. Jacques Villeneuve, we have been talking a lot about
:44:30. > :44:35.Williams this weekend - as a man who won the world title with them,
:44:35. > :44:39.ha have you felt watching them this season? It is tough, because it is
:44:39. > :44:44.a team with such an amazing past. It has always been a passionate
:44:44. > :44:51.team. Somehow it seems that decisions year after year have been
:44:51. > :44:55.heading them in the wrong direction. I would like to think about all of
:44:55. > :45:00.these new 40-year-old youngsters - where do you see yourself in all of
:45:00. > :45:04.this? I'm working in as car, I have not been working in Formula 1 at
:45:04. > :45:08.all. But Michael seems to have been progressing this year. De la Rosa
:45:08. > :45:11.is coming back next year. As long as you have the hunger, and the
:45:11. > :45:16.willingness to make the sacrifices, you can be as good as when you
:45:16. > :45:21.started. I just heard a huge cheer, that is probably Bruno Senna
:45:21. > :45:24.getting out of his car. The issue for someone like Pedro de la Rosa
:45:24. > :45:28.coming back is that you're competing against people a lot
:45:28. > :45:33.younger than yourself. Could you imagine getting back in a Formula 1
:45:33. > :45:37.car? There was talk about it. there was, once you have been
:45:37. > :45:41.racing, you always love driving those cars. If you could get a good
:45:41. > :45:46.shot, it would be tough to say no. But I'm not dreaming about it. It
:45:46. > :45:50.is not something I'm working on. As you say, you have to fight against
:45:50. > :45:57.the young, hungry kids, but if you have the experience, and you're
:45:58. > :46:06.hungry, you can do it. Jacques Villeneuve spoke about this car,
:46:06. > :46:11.which is by far the biggest motor sport in terms of support - how Bag
:46:11. > :46:16.-- how big is it for you to get into does car? Those cars are
:46:16. > :46:20.amazing to drive. Coming from Formula 1, I mainly get a go on the
:46:20. > :46:24.road courses, not the ovals. But you have tracks with 200,000 people
:46:24. > :46:28.sitting in the grandstands, 36 terms a year. It is an amazing
:46:28. > :46:32.Championship. It is fought on the track, very little punishment for
:46:32. > :46:37.dirty driving. Thank you very much for joining us. We will be hearing
:46:37. > :46:41.from Pastor Maldonado in a mini and. Just give us your thoughts on
:46:41. > :46:45.Sebastian Vettel this year. -- in a minute. He has been amazing. He has
:46:45. > :46:49.been in a position of strength, but he has also managed to destroy his
:46:50. > :46:54.teammate. That's the main thing. If the teammate had been on the same
:46:54. > :46:58.page, we could have said it was just the car. We have drag you away
:46:59. > :47:04.from your lunch, we apologise for that. It might be slightly cold now.
:47:04. > :47:07.Always nice to see you. We spoke about the fact that Jacques
:47:07. > :47:12.Villeneuve won the world title with Williams. Pastor Maldonado will not
:47:12. > :47:20.be doing that this season. A tough day for you today, and it will be
:47:20. > :47:29.the same tomorrow? 18 on the grid. Yes, we will be at the back, but we
:47:29. > :47:33.did it a different way from Rubens, a different set-up, so we hope
:47:33. > :47:42.tomorrow it will be raining, and that's it. Where did you struggle
:47:42. > :47:47.today? I think with the option tyres, we did not find great
:47:47. > :47:53.balance for the lap. And we were penalised because of that. But
:47:53. > :47:57.maybe with our set-up, that does not help as well. I was really
:47:57. > :48:00.excited when Rubens was trying to put in a hot lap, I thought he
:48:00. > :48:04.might just sneak into the final part of qualifying, something he
:48:04. > :48:09.has not done all season, of course. Now, we turn our attention to the
:48:09. > :48:14.fight for pole position. We have had a look at a few world champions
:48:14. > :48:19.struggling around today. It is a tricky middle sector, isn't it?
:48:19. > :48:23.can see here, locking up at the front. The front of the car seems
:48:23. > :48:29.to be getting a hard time. The cars are much lighter than they would
:48:29. > :48:33.normally be, and for that reason, I think they have not quite got the
:48:33. > :48:41.brake balance, they have got too much on the front. And this is
:48:41. > :48:45.Fernando Alonso, also looking up at the front. Can anyone knock
:48:45. > :48:52.Sebastian Vettel off his perch? Could he possibly get 15 pole
:48:52. > :48:56.positions? Of course, it is everybody's dream. He's at the top
:48:56. > :49:01.of the class in every aspect. But I think McLellan have something, I
:49:01. > :49:05.don't know why, but something will be in the water tells me that Lewis
:49:06. > :49:09.will just pip him. It has been close all weekend between the
:49:09. > :49:13.fastest guys in Formula 1 at the moment, McLaren and Red Bull.
:49:13. > :49:17.However, did you see that hot lap from Nico Rosberg in the final part
:49:17. > :49:24.of qualifying? It is time to hand you over to Martin Brundle and
:49:24. > :49:31.David qualified -- David Coulthard for the final part of qualifying in
:49:31. > :49:38.this 2011 season. MARTIN BRUNDLE: We have 10 drivers
:49:38. > :49:44.are aiming for the best grid positions - will Vettel smash the
:49:44. > :49:48.all-time record? At the moment he shares the record, with 14 pole
:49:48. > :49:56.positions in one season. Nigel Mansell did it in just 16 Grand
:49:56. > :50:03.Prix. This is the 19th of the season. Michael Schumacher, a
:50:03. > :50:12.dollars second behind his teammate, but still getting through to Q3.
:50:12. > :50:17.Looking very calm in the pit lane. Q3 begins, as ever, 10 minutes
:50:17. > :50:21.remaining of the final qualifying session of 2011. Nico Rosberg is so
:50:21. > :50:24.keen to get out there, he's having a good time.
:50:24. > :50:28.DAVID COULTHARD: That was a fantastic effort in the middle pot
:50:28. > :50:33.of qualifying, how can you go a second faster than your teammate
:50:33. > :50:38.around this track? It is the second shortest track on the calendar? It
:50:38. > :50:43.is about skill, I think is the answer. Ted Kravitz, what can you
:50:43. > :50:47.tell us. I have got a little explanation, it is all about power.
:50:47. > :50:53.It seems Mercedes are a team that do not think it is going to rain
:50:53. > :51:02.tomorrow, or they certainly have not set their car up for it. It was
:51:02. > :51:05.all power, in the first sector and the third sector. The DRS was
:51:05. > :51:15.working really well for Nico Rosberg, which is why he gained
:51:15. > :51:19.
:51:19. > :51:29.time. But he has also managed to Two cars on track, Lewis Hamilton
:51:29. > :51:39.and Nico Rosberg. No DRS (son. did not sound like he was maxing
:51:39. > :51:52.
:51:52. > :51:56.out the revs, either. These two were teammates in karting. He's
:51:56. > :51:59.going for it. He will have lost a lot of time with no DRS on that
:51:59. > :52:03.front straight. He's more than a second slower than what he did in
:52:03. > :52:09.the last pot of the previous qualifying session. Maybe Ted
:52:09. > :52:13.Kravitz can give us some information from the pit lane. Was
:52:13. > :52:19.it a new set of tyres when he went out, or was it the set he used in
:52:19. > :52:22.the first session, is he just getting some heat in the breaks?
:52:22. > :52:31.They all seem to have backed off on the concept of rain. Humility is
:52:31. > :52:39.still going up, at 63%. What is not going up his Nico Rosberg's sector
:52:39. > :52:46.times, in terms of improvement. is open now, so he did not want to
:52:46. > :52:56.use it on that first lap. It is like running your headlights on the
:52:56. > :52:57.
:52:57. > :53:03.road, it does not actually cost you He was just building up, I think.
:53:03. > :53:09.Just getting the tyres and breaks ready. It looks like Lewis Hamilton
:53:09. > :53:17.is doing exactly the same. It appears to be about tyre warm up.
:53:17. > :53:27.Yes, it is. I have sneaked a look at the eco-wars Berg's pit board,
:53:27. > :53:41.
:53:41. > :53:46.and it says, that means -- it says L1. That means it is a two-lap run.
:53:46. > :53:49.Why did we not see that in the previous two sessions? I wonder if
:53:49. > :53:54.it is to do with a different strategy with regard to tyre
:53:54. > :53:58.pressures. Is it a question of them knowing that they will not need
:53:58. > :54:02.these tyres in the race, so they are doing this in a different way,
:54:02. > :54:12.because they will have to start the Grand Prix on a different set of
:54:12. > :54:16.
:54:16. > :54:21.tyres? That could well be the answer. So, 1:12.2 for Sebastian
:54:21. > :54:28.Vettel! Challenge that, everybody. That is a mighty lap time, compared
:54:28. > :54:34.to what we have seen this weekend! Alonso could only do 1:12.8, six
:54:34. > :54:38.tenths of a second different. We expected Vettel to pull one out of
:54:38. > :54:48.the bag towards the end, but he has done it straightaway. Lewis
:54:48. > :54:57.
:54:57. > :55:02.Hamilton is trying to match it. But Vettel has laid down a marker
:55:02. > :55:10.already! Incredible, he has managed to go at two tenths faster than he
:55:10. > :55:14.did in the middle part of qualifying. Button also found a
:55:14. > :55:18.couple of tenths, Alonso has matched it as well, so it looks
:55:18. > :55:22.like it is a representative time. Lewis Hamilton down in fifth, what
:55:22. > :55:27.is that all about? You sense that Lewis has turned the corner of it,
:55:27. > :55:32.after that victory last time out. He was so happy with his time in LA,
:55:32. > :55:36.with his current, former, maybe future, girlfriend, and he has been
:55:36. > :55:46.looking mighty good around here. But at the moment, down in fifth
:55:46. > :55:47.
:55:47. > :55:55.Place, and we have still to see the efforts of several of the drivers.
:55:55. > :56:00.Any sign of blisters on the tyres? Those will get wrapped up, because
:56:00. > :56:05.they could be the tyres he will start the Grand Prix on. You have
:56:05. > :56:15.to start on the tyres which you used to set your fastest lap, if
:56:15. > :56:16.
:56:16. > :56:24.you're in the top 10. It is about now I start getting upset normally,
:56:24. > :56:27.isn't it?! I love the new qualification former, I like this
:56:27. > :56:33.for reception qualifying set-up, because if it rains, it doesn't
:56:33. > :56:40.matter, they still have to go out. But we have got to find a solution
:56:40. > :56:45.to this, the top 10 shoot-out must contain 10 cars fully active. I can
:56:45. > :56:49.understand if you run out of tyres, what's the point? There is a simple
:56:49. > :56:53.solution, you just make the top 101 extra set of tyres which they have
:56:53. > :56:59.to give back. Meanwhile, back to the action. Just over three minutes
:56:59. > :57:09.to go. RADIO: Rear temperatures are still
:57:09. > :57:22.
:57:22. > :57:28.quite low, mate. A casual message That seem a long way out, but he
:57:28. > :57:36.got away with it. Vettel has gone out on the track again. Is he going
:57:36. > :57:40.to deliver another crushing blow in the Red Bull? Webber second at the
:57:40. > :57:43.moment. Pole position man has not won his Grand Prix for the last two
:57:43. > :57:47.years, maybe it is not the best place to be. Interestingly,
:57:47. > :57:54.Sebastian has tended to be the last man across the line in qualifying,
:57:54. > :57:57.but he has gone very early this time. Adrian Sutil is going to
:57:57. > :58:05.deliver the seventh lap time of this session, so at least he's
:58:05. > :58:11.having a go. So, Sutil does a 13.3, that's pretty solid, only two
:58:11. > :58:21.tenths slower than Rosberg. Michael Schumacher goes out on the medium
:58:21. > :58:27.
:58:27. > :58:31.If Michael Schumacher sets a lap time on those tyres, he will have
:58:31. > :58:36.to use them at the start of the race. We will keep an eye on that.
:58:36. > :58:44.TED KRAVITZ: Bruno Senna has gone out on a brand new set of soft
:58:44. > :58:51.tyres. And Lewis Hamilton will be the last of the top runners to set
:58:51. > :58:55.his final attempt. I think that was a great effort from Bruno Senna.
:58:55. > :59:00.His practice sessions were blighted with all sorts of issues on that
:59:00. > :59:03.car. He looked like he could be in the drop zone, but on home soil, he
:59:04. > :59:10.has put forward the best message possible to Renault to keep his
:59:10. > :59:15.seat for next year. In the eight races he has done for Renault, five
:59:15. > :59:18.times he has out-qualified Petrov, who's highly regarded. A new
:59:18. > :59:25.fastest time in that sector for the double world champion Sebastian
:59:25. > :59:30.Vettel, as he makes his way, climbing this steep hill, much
:59:30. > :59:33.steeper than you can imagine from the TV pictures... It all looks
:59:33. > :59:42.calm and easy for him, but he's carrying mighty speed. He comes
:59:42. > :59:46.down the hill, just coming through Juncao, and taking the long line
:59:46. > :59:53.around the outside. He keeps the steering wheel nice and open, to
:59:53. > :59:58.let the speed built, delivering some KERS Energy, and there he goes.
:59:59. > :00:03.What can they do about that?! Mark Webber is on a decent lap at the
:00:03. > :00:07.moment, so is Button. No wonder the team are applauding, that's a
:00:07. > :00:12.sensational lap. Fernanda oh long say now approaching the line as
:00:12. > :00:22.well. He's fourth at the moment, and he goes up to third. --
:00:22. > :00:32.
:00:32. > :00:39.Fernando Alonso. They're all out Michael Schumacher will just set
:00:39. > :00:45.sector times. Jenson Button does second! He is up onto the front row.
:00:45. > :00:55.Nico Rosberg coming through in six. Mark Webber takes over second.
:00:55. > :00:55.
:00:55. > :01:02.Adrian Sutil, eight. Lewis Hamilton up into fourth. Jenson Button beats
:01:02. > :01:07.Lewis Hamilton. Mark Webber got within 0.1 of his team-mate. Dave
:01:07. > :01:11.Red Bull front row. The record- breaking 15th time, Sebastian
:01:11. > :01:16.Vettel on pole position. He did not even deliver his best sector in the
:01:16. > :01:26.final sector. What time could he have done?! A great effort from
:01:26. > :01:27.
:01:27. > :01:34.Mark Webber. RADIO: You did it! baby, we got it! That was good!
:01:34. > :01:41.Thank you, you are incredible! I wonder if it feels as good as the
:01:41. > :01:45.other 29! I mentioned Jenson Button, he never qualified in the top 10
:01:45. > :01:50.around this track. He has responded this weekend, third position, very
:01:50. > :01:59.close to Red Bull. It is a surprise he got in front of Lewis Hamilton.
:01:59. > :02:09.He looked mighty in the early sessions. It is 13-6, T Lewis
:02:09. > :02:18.Hamilton, against Jenson Button. Nico Rosberg, 0.5 down on his Q2
:02:18. > :02:26.time. He would have moved up one or two places. He starts six. How does
:02:26. > :02:36.he compare? 16-3 against Michael Schumacher in qualifying. What
:02:36. > :02:38.
:02:38. > :02:46.about Red Bull? 16-34 Sebastian Vettel. -- 16-3, 4 Sebastian Vettel.
:02:46. > :02:51.You can understand his happiness. Jenson Button, it look like he
:02:51. > :02:57.would be on the front row. He will auction off the overalls for
:02:57. > :03:04.charity. The McLaren drivers are wearing the overalls that have been
:03:04. > :03:12.designed by the fans are. Jenson Button won the Hungarian Grand Prix
:03:12. > :03:22.in those, and Lewis Hamilton won the German Grand Prix in his.
:03:22. > :03:36.
:03:36. > :03:46.Christian Horner, lots of doom and place. Adrian Sutil doing a great
:03:46. > :04:17.
:04:17. > :04:27.job again. A wonderful effort from the moment, they just could not
:04:27. > :04:33.
:04:33. > :04:38.find a way, as ever, to match the have got us all excited. Twitter is
:04:38. > :04:44.awash with people saying, surprise, surprise. He ends the season as he
:04:44. > :04:49.started it. Will this feel as good as his previous pole positions?
:04:49. > :04:56.This is the one that says, he got 15 pole positions in one season.
:04:56. > :05:00.the beginning of the season, those are the figures that you dream
:05:00. > :05:07.about, and they never become a reality. He made them a reality. He
:05:07. > :05:11.is that good. He loves braking records. He told us, if you are
:05:11. > :05:16.going to win world championships and titles, you deserve to take
:05:16. > :05:21.fastest laps and pole positions. It will mean a lot. We do not want to
:05:21. > :05:25.go on too long, because it must be exasperating for the other drivers.
:05:26. > :05:32.But he has always been great with the media and his team, he is great
:05:32. > :05:42.in the car, he is amazing. I wonder how Nigel Mansell felt. He picked
:05:42. > :05:44.
:05:44. > :05:50.up 14 pole positions. What can you say? He beat the
:05:50. > :05:56.previous fastest time, impressive. He has done it all year. He shared
:05:56. > :06:02.the record for two weeks with Nigel Mansell, I never thought that was
:06:02. > :06:08.such a record, so to beat that, impressive. It is an awesome
:06:08. > :06:13.achievement. To have Mark Webber alongside is a great final
:06:13. > :06:18.qualifying. Why did it mean so much to get the record? He enjoys the
:06:18. > :06:25.statistics, it is a small piece of history, he is only 24, but he has
:06:25. > :06:32.made his mark. He should enjoy this moment, it is quite special, some
:06:32. > :06:36.illustrious names that he now sits on top.
:06:36. > :06:40.Plenty of celebrations in Sao Paulo and back in Milton Keynes. We do
:06:40. > :06:50.not mind Red Bull picking up pole position, but I wish they would
:06:50. > :06:51.
:06:51. > :06:54.give us some more excitement! That his total dominance. But some
:06:54. > :07:00.people underperform. We were unfortunate, because Nico Rosberg
:07:00. > :07:05.has been getting better, and Mercedes have been improving. But
:07:05. > :07:10.to do the time in Q2 and not in Q3, that is a disappointment, because
:07:10. > :07:13.they should have been further up. Well done to Mark Webber, he needs
:07:13. > :07:18.a win to stand any chance of finishing second in the
:07:19. > :07:24.championship. What about Jenson Button? He has not even been in the
:07:24. > :07:31.top 10 in the last six years, but he qualifies third. Let's hear from
:07:31. > :07:37.Paul di Resta, who did OK. It was close today. You just missed
:07:37. > :07:42.out on Q3. It was very close. It was always going to be difficult.
:07:42. > :07:49.We have not had the top speed that the other cars had. We do not know
:07:50. > :07:54.why. It is a bit frustrating. But we are in 11th with rain forecast,
:07:54. > :07:59.so fingers crossed that we can capitalise on that. In the past,
:07:59. > :08:09.the car has been good in the wet. We are in a reasonable position.
:08:09. > :08:11.
:08:11. > :08:17.How tough it was it out there? We are you expecting to get into Q3?
:08:17. > :08:22.Produced an of the new set of soft tyres and we did not improved. We
:08:22. > :08:27.did not get the best out of them. But the other cars have not, either.
:08:27. > :08:35.You never know about the rain, it can be so unpredictable. The
:08:35. > :08:39.showers are increasing, but it is what it is. Hopefully, the race
:08:39. > :08:45.will be strong. As soon as the qualifying session
:08:45. > :08:51.is over, the sky is darker! We will wait and see what happens tomorrow.
:08:51. > :09:00.It will help Force India. Paul di Resta has done OK, and he would
:09:00. > :09:04.love to finish his rookie season on a high. I quite like the rain here!
:09:04. > :09:08.I think Adrian Sutil can finish in the top 10 in the Drivers'
:09:09. > :09:12.Championship if he gets the point, and if Paul di Resta is in front of
:09:12. > :09:16.him and likely to get a point, I am sure they will swap them at the
:09:16. > :09:21.last lap, because Adrian Sutil has been a huge number of this team,
:09:21. > :09:27.and it might be his last race at Force India. I think Paul di Resta
:09:27. > :09:31.will do the honourable think. unlikely, but if they outscored
:09:31. > :09:35.Renault by 15 points, they will finish fifth in the Constructors'
:09:35. > :09:41.Championship. Rubens Barrichello starts just behind Paul di Resta,
:09:41. > :09:49.in 12. You put out the best in what has
:09:49. > :09:53.been a difficult car this season. Well done. It was a great feeling.
:09:53. > :09:59.You are always there or thereabouts, but it has been a tough year with
:09:59. > :10:08.the car that we had. When you are at home, you have to use whatever
:10:08. > :10:15.is on your side, and today, with the public, I used it to the best,
:10:15. > :10:24.and I am pretty sure it was a poor position lap on the car! -- pole
:10:24. > :10:28.position lap! Can you give the fans something to cheer about tomorrow?
:10:28. > :10:36.I hope we will have some rain tomorrow, and that I will excite
:10:36. > :10:41.everybody else up. I hope they will not mind to bring their umbrellas!
:10:41. > :10:46.You can see the second part of our interview with him tomorrow. In
:10:46. > :10:51.that car, it is like a pole position lap. He will be getting
:10:51. > :10:57.the rosary beads out tonight! He is hoping for rain. He is the master
:10:57. > :11:03.in the rain. We saw what he did years ago. He has got such great,
:11:03. > :11:10.natural control, and he could store -- score points tomorrow, which
:11:10. > :11:13.everybody will be happy about, if it is wet. He shows us a lovely
:11:13. > :11:18.smile, and Sebastian Vettel shows us the finger, the 15th pole
:11:18. > :11:27.position. A record 15th pole position in a
:11:27. > :11:35.season, describe your feelings. is difficult. There has been some
:11:35. > :11:41.talk before this weekend about this particular record. The best thing
:11:41. > :11:45.was not to think about at all. We had a rough start to the weekend, I
:11:45. > :11:51.was not happy with the balance, but we made the right choices overnight,
:11:51. > :11:56.and again, going into qualifying, I was happier. Enjoying the moment,
:11:56. > :12:01.enjoying the laps I had. I was happy with the first lap in Q3, but
:12:01. > :12:05.I knew there was more to come, and I put everything into the last lap.
:12:05. > :12:12.I was very emotional when I crossed the line, because I knew that that
:12:12. > :12:17.was all I had. I was pleased with that. But I had to wait for quite a
:12:17. > :12:25.long time to see whether it was good enough. The names kept popping
:12:25. > :12:34.up. My engineer told me, Jenson Button, second, Mark Webber, second,
:12:34. > :12:41.and then, pole position. Really special. Different from the others.
:12:41. > :12:47.It took the master, Nigel Mansell, a couple of races less, but still,
:12:47. > :12:52.very historic and very special to me. I am happy to be here and start
:12:52. > :12:57.from different tomorrow, and had fully enjoy the race. The weather
:12:57. > :13:01.will be a question, we knew that, going into the weekend. It has
:13:01. > :13:07.improved, so today was already supposed to be wet, and it was dry.
:13:07. > :13:13.This place is tricky, special races, special weather, so I am looking
:13:13. > :13:20.forward to tomorrow. Mark Webber, 0.1 seconds away. Can you finish
:13:20. > :13:25.the season with the elusive when? It would be good, today went well.
:13:26. > :13:32.It would be nice to keep the heat on him. Both of us have got the
:13:32. > :13:38.maximum out of the car. I could not look after Nigel Mansell, but he
:13:38. > :13:43.did a good lap. We both got the best out of the car. I am looking
:13:43. > :13:51.forward to the race tomorrow. very close, and we might have
:13:51. > :13:57.changeable conditions tomorrow. are all excited about tomorrow, we
:13:57. > :14:00.all want to end on a high. At the moment, I am enjoying the moment,
:14:00. > :14:05.this is my best qualifying for the last six years, and 10 place is
:14:05. > :14:13.better than last year. This is a good start to the weekend. I always
:14:13. > :14:22.love racing here. It is such a good racing circuit. It is very good for
:14:22. > :14:28.overtaking, and we have the ers. -- would have BIS. Whatever happens,
:14:28. > :14:32.it has been a great season for us, just not quite good enough. There
:14:32. > :14:42.are a few areas we need to work on. Hopefully, we can end this
:14:42. > :14:44.
:14:44. > :14:49.reasonably good season off with a lap, but Bruno Senna's was the most
:14:49. > :14:52.popular. For more of us, congratulations, how did it feel
:14:52. > :14:57.out there for you? The it is great, we have been having a very tough
:14:57. > :15:02.weekend. Just getting everything together on that lap was very
:15:02. > :15:06.important. I think the conditions helped us a bit, because the track
:15:06. > :15:12.temperature dropped, and the car changed quite a lot. I'm really
:15:12. > :15:17.happy that we managed to put this lap their. It is better than I was
:15:17. > :15:20.expecting, but it could always be better, but I'm really happy.
:15:20. > :15:25.Mansell used to say that the crowd at the British Grand Prix well
:15:25. > :15:29.worth a bit of extra time, what about this crowd here? This morning
:15:29. > :15:36.I had a tough time, and they gave me great support. I'm really happy
:15:36. > :15:40.to be able to give something back to them, because they deserve it.
:15:40. > :15:45.have to ask you, each team has its in-house fighting, and of course,
:15:45. > :15:50.with your teammate, but for you to make the final qualifying, does
:15:50. > :15:53.that put extra pressure on the team to sign you next year? Every
:15:53. > :15:57.performance counts, I have had good performances before, and it is good
:15:57. > :16:00.to finish the year with a good qualifying performance. But the
:16:00. > :16:07.race tomorrow is what really counts, it could be a lottery if it is wet.
:16:07. > :16:11.I hope that we are in front in that lottery. What was impressive for me,
:16:11. > :16:19.you have already mentioned your troubled practice session, but you
:16:19. > :16:22.have not actually raced around his racetrack, you do not have a lot of
:16:22. > :16:27.experience which a lot of the other drivers have, from doing the other
:16:27. > :16:33.formulas. It is a particular track to find the line... Yes, it is a
:16:33. > :16:37.difficult track. I was struggling with a fuel wrong lines in
:16:37. > :16:41.qualifying, but then I tried some different things, and it worked. So
:16:41. > :16:44.now I know how to drive here, which makes the whole difference.
:16:44. > :16:48.Sometimes having the experience of driving on a track helps, but
:16:48. > :16:50.sometimes it can hinder you as well. sometimes it can hinder you as well.
:16:50. > :16:54.Let's just ride on board with you, and give us your emotions as you
:16:54. > :16:58.were flying around. Were you aware of the fact that you were at
:16:58. > :17:02.Interlagos, with the history attached? Or were you so focused on
:17:02. > :17:09.the job in hand? During the qualifying lap, you're just
:17:09. > :17:16.focusing on giving everything on the track. There were one or two
:17:16. > :17:26.moments when the rear was a bit loose, but it was a very tidy lap.
:17:26. > :17:26.
:17:26. > :17:30.Before that, even in Q1, I was struggling to do a tidy lap. But
:17:30. > :17:36.when you finish the lap, and you slow down, then you can look at the
:17:36. > :17:39.crowd, and see them cheering. I'm really happy to be able to give
:17:39. > :17:43.something back to them. Congratulations, a strong
:17:43. > :17:52.qualifying from you, and tomorrow, you will be fighting for points at
:17:52. > :18:00.your home Grand Prix. I hope so, we will see what happens in the wet.
:18:00. > :18:05.David, will he sleep well tonight, do you think? I think so. Did you
:18:06. > :18:10.see this wet still dripping down, it shows how deep he had to delve
:18:10. > :18:14.to deliver that lap. Massive pressure on him. Fighting for
:18:14. > :18:20.position within the team as well, that's a great performance.
:18:20. > :18:30.Straight to another interview, then no doubt to about 15,000 autographs.
:18:30. > :18:40.
:18:40. > :18:46.win tomorrow if he wants to be second in the Championship. We
:18:46. > :18:49.thought Nico Rosberg might be higher up than sixth. But he starts
:18:49. > :18:59.behind Fernando Alonso. Felipe Massa, his home Grand Prix as well,
:18:59. > :19:03.don't forget. He won the world title here - for about 20 seconds!
:19:03. > :19:07.We have already heard from Paul di Resta and Rubens Barrichello.
:19:07. > :19:11.Behind them, it is the Toro Rossos side by side, could this be the
:19:11. > :19:17.last race for either of their drivers? You could ask the same
:19:17. > :19:19.question of Vitaly Petrov. Kobayashi finishes in front of his
:19:19. > :19:29.teammate Sergio Perez, who walked past us looking unhappy a few
:19:29. > :19:34.
:19:34. > :19:39.moments ago. Look at that, a bad weekend so far for Virgin, starting
:19:39. > :19:44.at the back. Let's here from Lewis Hamilton, who starts fourth on the
:19:44. > :19:49.grid. Lewis, fourth place start, how do you feel about that?
:19:49. > :19:54.little bit disappointed. We're still on the second row, but we
:19:54. > :20:00.would have loved to go quicker. One performance, I'm not too happy with
:20:01. > :20:05.that. I was not quick enough. I was a cup of tenths off Jenson, so the
:20:05. > :20:11.car could be a bit quicker. But the Red Bulls were massively quick
:20:11. > :20:16.today. It seems this circuit brings the best out of people in the
:20:16. > :20:22.actual race, we have seen you do really well here in the past - what
:20:22. > :20:29.do you think you can do tomorrow, do you feel inspired here? Yes, it
:20:29. > :20:33.is a place where you are inspired, because at his Senna's home,
:20:33. > :20:41.they're so passionate over here. I have been on fourth quite a few
:20:41. > :20:47.times here. I think 2007, 2008, and maybe another time, maybe last year,
:20:47. > :20:50.I think. So, four is a good number for me. Let's hope that I can turn
:20:50. > :20:55.it into something more positive tomorrow. Lewis Hamilton looking
:20:55. > :21:00.positive, looking ahead to tomorrow. Fourth on the grid, he would have
:21:00. > :21:04.liked to be in front of his teammate, but nobody was catching
:21:04. > :21:08.the Red Bulls today. No, they must have held something back during
:21:08. > :21:12.practice. They delivered a much bigger gap than we were expecting.
:21:12. > :21:16.But the real glory of course comes tomorrow, the chequered flag. They
:21:16. > :21:21.will be difficult to beat, but as it gets dark year, we can feel the
:21:21. > :21:24.temperature dropping. So maybe the weather will play its part. You can
:21:24. > :21:28.see how dark it has gone, very quickly indeed. And we have heard
:21:28. > :21:31.that for the last two years, the pole-sitter has not won this race.
:21:31. > :21:35.We have heard people saying they would love it to rain, the same
:21:35. > :21:42.applies, actually, to the McLaren's and all of the others behind the
:21:42. > :21:48.Red Bulls. You have just heard Paul di Resta, it will be what it is. We
:21:48. > :21:52.cannot change the weather forecast. The drivers understand that. But
:21:52. > :21:59.secretively, there are some drivers who really think they're extra-
:21:59. > :22:05.special in the wet, Lewis is one of those, and Rubens is another. But
:22:05. > :22:13.do not read aloud Vettel, he's the key man. But on this occasion,
:22:13. > :22:17.Vettel may just let Mark win this win, if it means finishing second
:22:17. > :22:21.in the Championship. Just to remind you, team orders are now allowed in
:22:21. > :22:25.Formula 1. Just before we go, you can see the qualifying draw for the
:22:25. > :22:35.Euro 2012 Championship coming your way on Friday at 2nd December on
:22:35. > :22:39.
:22:39. > :22:45.BBC Two. Come on, Ireland! Join us tomorrow for the final race of the
:22:45. > :22:48.2011 Formula 1 season. Before we go, David, your thoughts on Sebastian
:22:48. > :22:52.Vettel's 15 pole positions in one season. It is a remarkable
:22:52. > :22:55.achievement, given the level of the competition. McLaren have come back
:22:55. > :22:58.fantastically well, Ferrari have been right in there as well, at
:22:59. > :23:03.various points. It is the relentless pursuit of the pole
:23:04. > :23:08.position, and his deliverance. He has made very few mistakes. Thank
:23:08. > :23:11.you both of you that much indeed. We're back tomorrow afternoon for
:23:11. > :23:14.the last race of the year. When we arrived here we thought it would be
