:02:45. > :02:50.This is how it looks from the sky. Both as you expect there are clouds
:02:50. > :02:55.in the sky and some rain around but that is the new look at Silverstone.
:02:55. > :03:01.That is impressive and so is the packed Grandstand for the start of
:03:01. > :03:07.the British Grand Prix weekend. 70 years ago this place was full of
:03:08. > :03:17.World War Two bombers. And the aerobatic display happening just
:03:17. > :03:21.above, creating a great atmosphere. And these two men have seen a lot
:03:22. > :03:27.as commentators and as fans. You have seen this place changed a lot.
:03:28. > :03:33.What do you think of the wing? think it is amazing. We had to have
:03:33. > :03:39.that to get the extension to the contract, that was what we needed
:03:39. > :03:45.to do for the fans. I think the facility is amazing. No question
:03:45. > :03:50.that the facility was necessary for what the teams and the media need.
:03:50. > :03:55.But the great atmosphere has not been lost. And the fans are ready
:03:55. > :04:02.for this, they have been queuing up in the last couple of days and
:04:02. > :04:07.hopefully they will be rewarded with a classic British Grand Prix.
:04:07. > :04:13.Was there a need to compete with the likes of Singapore? Absolutely,
:04:13. > :04:20.it is the home of motor-racing world wide. Abu Dhabi, none of
:04:20. > :04:25.these circuits can ever replicate the atmosphere. Just coming in here,
:04:25. > :04:30.but people with a genuine passion for the sport. That is special and
:04:30. > :04:35.you will not repeat that anywhere in my opinion. It is fantastic to
:04:35. > :04:45.be back home for the British Grand Prix. Formula 1 was born here 60
:04:45. > :05:14.
:05:14. > :05:19.years ago. And the atmosphere has They have come in their droves.
:05:19. > :05:27.They can build an impressive building and also the sun comes out
:05:27. > :05:34.for them on cue. Damon Hill is with us. How has your weekend been so
:05:34. > :05:39.far? It was quite stressful, but successful? Very successful. It has
:05:39. > :05:44.been brilliant. There are bound to be a few teething problems. The
:05:44. > :05:51.terrain is a bit different but it is fantastic and we have got a long
:05:51. > :05:56.contract for the Grand Prix going forward. It must be your best
:05:56. > :06:01.moment? Well driving is what I started out doing and ended up
:06:01. > :06:05.being involved somehow in developing Britain's premier
:06:05. > :06:12.motorsport venue. It has been a very interesting experience and it
:06:12. > :06:16.shows you how much work goes into the organising of this event.
:06:16. > :06:26.your son was ever going to drive in the future of what advice would you
:06:26. > :06:27.
:06:27. > :06:31.give him? I seem to be a bit out of date as far as he is concerned! It
:06:31. > :06:38.is a fantastic thing to be a racing driver and to race in front of your
:06:38. > :06:45.home crowd. To do that at a British Grand Prix, it is a dream for any
:06:45. > :06:53.British driver. If you wanted to give him some tips, just show him
:06:53. > :06:59.this footage from 1994! I do try to remind him occasionally! But he's
:06:59. > :07:07.doing brilliantly. It is not easy having a father and grandfather who
:07:07. > :07:12.was a champion. Chris, does it bring back memories? I think you
:07:12. > :07:16.get to the stage where you forget that you did it. Looking back at
:07:16. > :07:25.those images, it seems amazing to me that that is actually me doing
:07:25. > :07:31.that. I had a go last weekend at Goodwood and I was terrified! But
:07:31. > :07:38.there you go. Nigel Mansell has never actually officially retired!
:07:38. > :07:43.I keep expecting him to make a comeback. You never know. We all
:07:43. > :07:51.know what it is like to have an interfering father as a team
:07:51. > :07:57.principal. What I do like? I'm very mindful. I don't want to get myself
:07:57. > :08:02.into this situation where I am applying pressure on Josh. This is
:08:02. > :08:06.quite a common thing these days but it did not used to be like that. In
:08:06. > :08:12.the old days drivers used to go to be a racing driver against the
:08:12. > :08:18.wishes of their parents. Now it seems to be a semi- managerial role.
:08:18. > :08:23.But I have got advice and I tried to do it at arm's length. This is
:08:23. > :08:29.just the first step on a big phase of redevelopment at Silverstone but
:08:29. > :08:37.it does seem to be already successful. So congratulations. We
:08:37. > :08:42.all want a successful weekend, as do the fans. Everyone hoping for a
:08:42. > :08:48.weekend more akin to Turkey or Canada rather than what we saw in
:08:49. > :08:58.the balance here a few weeks ago. But Valencia was just perfect for
:08:58. > :09:08.the defending world champion. And they're off. Wherever going up
:09:08. > :09:15.
:09:15. > :09:23.Jensen Button, at great over take from him. Michael Exits the pits.
:09:23. > :09:33.It looked like he crossed the white line as well. Mark Webber has had
:09:33. > :09:46.
:09:46. > :09:56.the difficult lap. Showing his Maldonado appearing to come from
:09:56. > :10:18.
:10:18. > :10:23.Petrov and Kobayashi, no points for that one, I would imagine. We have
:10:23. > :10:31.said it before, it Mark Webber did not have bad luck, he would not
:10:31. > :10:37.have any luck at all. An utterly dominant performance yet again from
:10:37. > :10:41.Sebastian Vettel. I love that little skip at the end. Let's go
:10:41. > :10:47.for a walk and give everyone at home the chance to get to know
:10:47. > :10:53.these new surroundings. The fans had again turned out in their
:10:53. > :10:58.droves. Sebastian said after that last wind he did not even know what
:10:58. > :11:05.the points situation was. But in case he is watching, we can show
:11:05. > :11:12.him. It is 77 points of the difference. Do you buy that, and
:11:12. > :11:18.surely he would no? May be at that moment he was not to in the
:11:18. > :11:23.calculation, but he is a man who likes the statistics. He will
:11:23. > :11:28.remember every single thing that he has done this season. He will
:11:29. > :11:38.certainly no good gap in the points. He is just trying to give himself
:11:38. > :11:42.that comfort zone. Don't believe a word of it. David, you drove in a
:11:42. > :11:50.period of dominance, Michael Schumacher or winning races. This
:11:50. > :11:55.season has one -- has gone on for 18 weeks. How do you keep
:11:55. > :12:01.motivation if the same guy keeps on winning? You have to build it
:12:01. > :12:06.across at season. Sebastian statistically has a bigger lead now
:12:06. > :12:11.than any driver in the history of the Championship. But there is a
:12:11. > :12:19.lot of racing still to be done. There will be more twists and turns,
:12:19. > :12:24.that is for sure. Fernando Alonso has said this has to be the weekend
:12:24. > :12:29.than if anyone other than Sebastian has to get their hands on the title,
:12:29. > :12:36.it will have to be here. We will soon be running out of races.
:12:36. > :12:42.know how astute Fernando is. This time last year he was 46 points
:12:42. > :12:46.behind and he pulled it back. With the changes, the engines, the
:12:46. > :12:53.defuse a system, it could positively affect Ferrari. So he
:12:53. > :12:57.will be hoping that this is the turn around for him. One thing that
:12:57. > :13:04.could cause the turn around are the changes that the sports governing
:13:04. > :13:10.body have made. They have tried to restrict the exhaust gases coming
:13:10. > :13:15.into the underside of the cars. But this has caused a lot of
:13:15. > :13:20.consternation and a couple of the team principals had a set to in one
:13:20. > :13:27.of the press conferences. But there has been annual ruling this morning.
:13:27. > :13:31.Ted Kravitz can explain. This is an exhaust blender future. The teams
:13:31. > :13:37.take hot exhaust gases from the engine and feed it down this
:13:37. > :13:42.channel to put it into the car which creates low pressure beneath
:13:42. > :13:46.the carp and effectively sucked sit down on to the ground. The gas
:13:46. > :13:51.comes through the diffuser and creates downforce. That was fine
:13:51. > :13:59.when the driver was on throttle but in the middle of the corner, off
:13:59. > :14:04.the throttle, no exhaust gases were created and the car lost downforce.
:14:04. > :14:10.So what the teams have been doing is to open the throttle in the
:14:10. > :14:14.middle of the corner giving the driver consistent Darren forced off
:14:14. > :14:21.the throttle. That led to the rough engine sound we had been hearing
:14:21. > :14:27.lately. The Sports rule-makers had decided that the practice had got
:14:27. > :14:31.out of hand and they banned it. But in doing so they allowed the
:14:31. > :14:36.Mercedes to do a small amount of the exhaust blowing because
:14:36. > :14:45.Mercedes said that is just how their engines work. The other teams
:14:45. > :14:49.were furious. Where is this going to end? It would be down to
:14:49. > :14:57.complying with the technical regulations. It would be impossible
:14:57. > :15:03.to accept a Clear and specific handicap. We are not doing what we
:15:03. > :15:08.were doing and we have taken quite a big performance hit. McLaren have
:15:08. > :15:17.lacked downforce all season. So how will they balance the car when they
:15:17. > :15:21.lose that rear downforce? We will take front downforce. We have
:15:22. > :15:31.developed this car around the diffuser. So to not have it
:15:32. > :15:35.
:15:35. > :15:42.suddenly off throttle, that is a Any opportunity you can get in
:15:42. > :15:46.Formula 1, you cannot turn it down, at least not at the stage I'm in in
:15:46. > :15:51.my career. That's why am delighted Red Bull and Hispania Racing have
:15:51. > :16:01.come to a deal. I will not look too far ahead. Hopefully I will be on
:16:01. > :16:04.
:16:04. > :16:11.Finally, two teams have made big plans for the future. The famous
:16:11. > :16:14.pairing of Williams Renault is back in F1 next season. And Virgin
:16:14. > :16:18.Racing will be using some McLaren know how to try to get off the back
:16:18. > :16:23.of the grid. So, the teams at the back are looking to the future. The
:16:23. > :16:26.teams at the front are not looking any further than this weekend. The
:16:26. > :16:31.latest news is that this morning, there was a meeting of the
:16:31. > :16:38.technical work group, to try to work out where they stand on this
:16:38. > :16:45.diffusers scenario. They had a meeting, they have now emerged from
:16:45. > :16:51.that meeting. Let's find out the latest, with Ted Kravitz and
:16:51. > :16:55.Christian Horner. Give us the latest, what's the outcome of the
:16:55. > :16:58.technical working group meeting? We're trying to find a solution. It
:16:58. > :17:05.is in nobody's interest to have the lack of clarity which currently
:17:05. > :17:14.exists. Charlie made an offer. Red Bull has also offered a concession
:17:14. > :17:18.this weekend. That is to run as we are. We need all the teams to agree
:17:18. > :17:23.to move on and put this behind us. Hopefully we're not far away from
:17:23. > :17:32.achieving that. So that means you will run with a bit more exhaust
:17:32. > :17:36.blowing? Here, no. So that will mean you have one arm behind your
:17:37. > :17:42.back, as far as you're concerned, this weekend? At the moment, in our
:17:42. > :17:45.opinion, we're running a disadvantaged system, compared with
:17:45. > :17:49.other engine manufacturers. We're trying to find a solution to put
:17:49. > :17:54.this episode behind us. The most simplistic thing would be to go
:17:54. > :18:03.back to exactly where we worked in the weeks ago. So, to sum it up,
:18:03. > :18:06.you're prepared to take that hit this weekend? Yes. We're here in
:18:06. > :18:10.the pit lane, and you can see how busy it is all around us. These
:18:10. > :18:14.fans have not turned up to talk about blown diffusers, and what
:18:14. > :18:18.percentage of exhaust gases you can run. But it is important to get
:18:18. > :18:24.this sorted out. It is unsavoury that we're talking about this
:18:24. > :18:29.during the race weekend. There was a directive from the FIA while the
:18:29. > :18:35.cars were on track! I find it confusing, and I'm supposed to know
:18:35. > :18:40.what's going on in this business. In my day, you could not change the
:18:40. > :18:45.rules during the season. I wish we had adhered to that. This may seem
:18:45. > :18:48.like a clarification, but this is not clarification, this is, for me,
:18:48. > :18:53.blatantly giving an advantage to Ferrari, because they do not have
:18:53. > :18:59.this system. The only way you can make regulation changes during the
:18:59. > :19:04.year was on the grounds of safety, and there's nothing about this
:19:04. > :19:11.which suggests it is anything to do with safety. It is just about the
:19:11. > :19:15.exploitation of aerodynamics in a way which was not done in the past.
:19:15. > :19:20.As you heard from Christian Horner, it looks like for this weekend, Red
:19:20. > :19:25.Bull will be slightly handicapped. We will wait and see what that
:19:25. > :19:29.means when the cars come out for qualifying in about half an hour.
:19:29. > :19:34.Amongst the 100,000 people here today will be the very nervous di
:19:34. > :19:37.Resta family. Finally, Paul is racing in a Formula 1 race at his
:19:37. > :19:41.home Grand Prix. We thought we would send someone sensible and
:19:41. > :19:49.trustworthy, with greater experience around here, to find out.
:19:49. > :19:57.Sadly, that man is also a bit of a mischief-maker. It is amazing how
:19:57. > :20:06.close it is to the circuit? We will not be wasting any money on a taxi.
:20:06. > :20:11.You're young and fit, and I need the exercise. This is this sign,
:20:12. > :20:18.welcome to the British Grand Prix, I used to cross and this. You can
:20:18. > :20:23.see your picture, David. I think I was about the same age as you are
:20:23. > :20:32.now. You can see how much I have aged. We have got a few of your
:20:32. > :20:40.fans here. A photo of the back of your head! Has anyone got a
:20:40. > :20:44.question for Paul? No idea, when you're a rookie. Are you enjoying
:20:44. > :20:49.it? Yes, it is everything I have ever dreamed of doing. Not
:20:49. > :20:52.everybody gets the opportunity. need to get you over here. We're
:20:52. > :21:02.and a pressure for a time, so we have got to get you over to the
:21:02. > :21:08.paddock. Hop on. I've just got to go to the paddock, I've got Mr
:21:09. > :21:15.Coulthard in the cab. Who said Grand Prix racing is glamorous?
:21:15. > :21:21.Have you ever been in a truck before? I have not been in a truck
:21:21. > :21:24.for a long time. My family business is transport, so I kind of grow up
:21:24. > :21:34.in this position in a truck. This is where we spend our family
:21:34. > :21:43.
:21:43. > :21:49.I think we may have to walk the last part. Kenya droppers at the
:21:49. > :21:53.Gate, because we do not want to use up Paul's energy. You're the only
:21:53. > :22:01.former one driver to arrive at Silverstone in a truck. Thank you
:22:01. > :22:10.very much. Well driven. We will send your CV into Force India. We
:22:10. > :22:20.seem to be missing something. They're very expensive, these Grand
:22:20. > :22:24.Prix drivers. One big advantage of driving for one of the winning
:22:24. > :22:28.teams is that you do not have such a long walk down the paddock. So,
:22:28. > :22:33.if nothing else, that has got to be your motivation. I can see your
:22:33. > :22:38.team in injured. We wish you luck for the weekend. -- your team
:22:38. > :22:42.manager. We got him delivered back, where only a minute late. That
:22:42. > :22:47.struck was a bit slow. Entirely the truck driver's fault,
:22:47. > :22:52.wasn't it? He genuinely did not expect us to ever a lift with him.
:22:52. > :22:56.He was in trouble with his boss. It was interesting to see how relaxed
:22:56. > :23:02.Paul who are, it is only his 9th Grand Prix. You would think the
:23:02. > :23:09.pressure was immense, but he seems so grounded. This is his car behind
:23:09. > :23:12.us. One piece of advice for him? You have got to just attack the
:23:12. > :23:17.track like any other racetrack. If you consider the fact that your
:23:17. > :23:21.family is here, there are a lot of British fans wanting you to do well,
:23:21. > :23:25.it just adds pressure. He has just got to do exactly what he has been
:23:25. > :23:30.doing, and finish ahead of Adrian Sutil again. Which is pretty much
:23:30. > :23:37.what he has been doing so far, only out-qualified by his teammate twice
:23:37. > :23:43.so far. Over to Eddie. I have never seen so much involvement and
:23:43. > :23:48.excitement. I just happened to meet this lovely Hannah Benn. Where are
:23:48. > :23:55.you from? I'm from Leipzig in Germany but I live in London. I
:23:55. > :24:03.love it here, it is my first time but it is really gorgeous. You're
:24:03. > :24:10.probably a or Vettel fan. I am. Who couldn't be? Something tells me
:24:10. > :24:16.that lady is probably not camping out this weekend. Everybody says,
:24:16. > :24:20.and it is totally true, the British marshals are the best in the world.
:24:20. > :24:27.Today, it is their chance to be here at the British Grand Prix, and
:24:27. > :24:33.they have got a new recruit. This is Thruxton, the fastest circuit in
:24:33. > :24:36.England. When it goes wrong here, it goes very wrong. It is not only
:24:36. > :24:40.the driver's risking their lives for the love of motor sport. Spare
:24:40. > :24:49.a thought for the men and women in orange, standing in the line of
:24:49. > :24:52.fire. High time for me to man up and join the volunteers to be a
:24:52. > :25:02.marshal for the day and stand side- by-side with the unsung heroes who
:25:02. > :25:11.make motorsport tick. I have not been disclosed to a circuit when
:25:11. > :25:15.the racing is going on, ever. I'm quite excited, actually. The most
:25:15. > :25:25.important thing, whilst we're here on post, always watch the oncoming
:25:25. > :25:28.
:25:28. > :25:36.traffic. Watch out! I barely saw Jason Plato as he lost control and
:25:36. > :25:42.crashed right in front of me. Now, I know him very well, you know him
:25:42. > :25:48.very well, but this isn't it time to talk to a driver. I'll tell you
:25:48. > :25:58.what they need to do. That is not on. I could have hit that. That
:25:58. > :26:00.
:26:00. > :26:04.kills people, that does. I will speak to the supervisor. I did not
:26:04. > :26:12.expect to be doing manual labour as well. That's all part and parcel of
:26:12. > :26:22.it. Next, I was seconded to Church, one of the fastest corners in the
:26:22. > :26:23.
:26:23. > :26:28.UK. I find myself naturally leaning back. You do, yes. We have not got
:26:28. > :26:38.any protection! You have, you've got a tyre wall. This was pure
:26:38. > :26:45.
:26:45. > :26:55.adrenalin. Are you not tempted just to look over? No. We are starting
:26:55. > :27:02.
:27:02. > :27:08.the race? Yes. I'm very proud when Right, they're all away cleanly,
:27:08. > :27:18.and we've got to go. At the next race, I was allowed on the grid to
:27:18. > :27:29.
:27:29. > :27:32.fulfil a boyhood dream. Are you Susan's standing on a live motor
:27:32. > :27:42.racing circuit, at the start. The last race of the day, and events
:27:42. > :27:55.
:27:55. > :27:59.Rescue three scramble, start line. Every marshal on the grey will be
:27:59. > :28:08.called into action. Thankfully, everyone was OK, and we started the
:28:08. > :28:11.clear-up. The racing was able to resume. All in a day's work. I was
:28:11. > :28:16.President of the British motor racing Marshal's Club for some
:28:16. > :28:20.years, and you could not be doing a better thing. Because the British
:28:20. > :28:25.marshals are the best in the world, the best trained, so enthusiastic,
:28:25. > :28:28.they do it all with their own money, to the extent that British marshals
:28:28. > :28:35.are asked to go to places like the Monaco Grand Prix and one of the
:28:35. > :28:37.others. And of course, a big thank you to
:28:37. > :28:42.all of the marshals involved at Silverstone this weekend. It is
:28:42. > :28:47.important that we shine a light on the great work done by these guys.
:28:47. > :28:51.Without them, motor racing would not exist. And they are absolute
:28:51. > :28:56.fans as well. But they care about the safety not just of the drivers,
:28:56. > :29:00.but also of the people who turn up. They do an unbelievable job. We see
:29:00. > :29:06.them in Singapore, all over the world. They are absolutely state-
:29:06. > :29:11.of-the-art, these marshals. That should be the next thing the three
:29:11. > :29:16.of us do. But as we saw, you have got to be a fireman, engineer and
:29:16. > :29:23.sometimes counsellor to the drivers. Yes, we could see Jason after the
:29:23. > :29:29.incident, brushing away the marshal. I would always suggest to a marshal,
:29:29. > :29:32.approach with caution a racing driver who has just crashed.
:29:32. > :29:37.Whatever it is you need to ask him about medical issues, I would just
:29:37. > :29:45.give it a minute. We are now outside probably the busiest garage
:29:45. > :29:48.at the weekend, this is the McLaren garage. Jenson Button has not had
:29:48. > :29:57.the best of times at the British Grand Prix, never made it onto the
:29:58. > :30:02.podium. He would love to change that this weekend. 100,000 fans all
:30:03. > :30:07.hoping for some British success. But these days, being a racing
:30:07. > :30:17.driver, as David will testify, it is more than just about driving a
:30:17. > :30:36.
:30:36. > :30:46.And action. How are you doing? I am the stylist
:30:46. > :30:57.
:30:57. > :31:02.to date. You are running the show. And you are here to help? I am not.
:31:02. > :31:08.We'd never know what we're going to do before we turn up, which is
:31:08. > :31:17.actually quite good. We had to put all this together, I was the
:31:17. > :31:25.photographer. Lewis decided that he was not going to be an assistant to
:31:25. > :31:29.Jensen Button. That is a bit like the way that they race. He helped
:31:29. > :31:39.pick out all the clothes and he definitely has a strong feminine
:31:39. > :31:47.side in real life! I am good to go with that one. He he had a keen eye
:31:47. > :31:54.for the make-up and the shoes and all that stuff. I think Jensen
:31:54. > :32:04.Button had an alarmingly foreign knowledge of women's clothing.
:32:04. > :32:07.
:32:07. > :32:14.Exactly how I imagined it. That were receipt -- that worries me,
:32:14. > :32:24.you being my team-mate. I it really do like photography. They knew what
:32:24. > :32:28.
:32:28. > :32:38.they wanted from the off, which is great. It looks terrible! Show her
:32:38. > :32:40.
:32:40. > :32:48.at the posts. It is a little bit naughty. Lewis chose this one.
:32:48. > :32:53.me just get a picture of it. When I was watching Ayrton Senna in those
:32:53. > :33:03.days they did not have this but now there is a lot more of a commercial
:33:03. > :33:05.
:33:05. > :33:12.aspect to it. Your head is in the shot! We had to do than Alice in
:33:12. > :33:22.Wonderland posed with a plastic rabbit next to me!
:33:22. > :33:25.
:33:25. > :33:33.These guys have got vision. I think it is really cool. Not that -- not
:33:33. > :33:39.bad for my first photo-shoot. What a lovely pose for Jensen
:33:39. > :33:44.Button. I guess he would like to be posing on the podium. Let's Talk
:33:44. > :33:49.about British drivers at McLaren. We saw them getting along famously.
:33:49. > :33:53.Is it better than even McLaren could have expected? They have
:33:53. > :33:58.distinct personalities but I think they gel together and enjoy a week
:33:58. > :34:02.each other's company. But they have an huge determination to beat their
:34:02. > :34:07.team-mate, that is clear. But they don't work well together.
:34:07. > :34:12.Nevertheless, we do see that in the past there has been a number one
:34:12. > :34:20.and number two. McLaren have been going for 30 years in his current
:34:20. > :34:25.guise. So 30 years ago they had his first victory here. They had many
:34:25. > :34:30.great drivers together so they understand how to get the best out
:34:30. > :34:35.of two highly motivated drivers. There always able to put some
:34:36. > :34:40.cooling water on any little tensions that arise. One tension
:34:40. > :34:45.that has not been diluted is this situation with that will they stay
:34:45. > :34:50.or will they go? Why does Lewis not just come out and say that he's not
:34:50. > :35:00.going to leave? That is the manager's job to get the most out
:35:00. > :35:01.
:35:01. > :35:05.of his financial and contractual decisions. Commercially there will
:35:05. > :35:15.always try to squeeze the maximum out of it. The driver has to Trust
:35:15. > :35:15.
:35:15. > :35:19.his manager. Eddie knows all about doing that! I have a slight concern.
:35:19. > :35:23.Lewis is managed by a team that seemed to know a lot about movies
:35:23. > :35:28.and pop-music but I'm trying to figure out what they actually know
:35:28. > :35:33.about motor-racing and world champions. My guess is that in my
:35:34. > :35:39.opinion they should appoint someone who has actually ate huge knowledge
:35:39. > :35:43.of Formula 1 to assist him. thing is to get the best contract
:35:43. > :35:48.that you can buy the other thing is livestock management within the
:35:48. > :35:55.Pavett. How do you get the best out yourself to deliver the maximum in
:35:55. > :36:00.that car every time. But if they did leave McLaren they would not
:36:00. > :36:05.get the chance to wear the kind of overalls that I think Leevan
:36:05. > :36:11.Yearwood be impressed by. Nice and colourful. It is colourful and it
:36:11. > :36:16.is a good marketing tool. The person who thought this up, it is
:36:16. > :36:21.well conceived. We used to do all kinds of things which snakes and
:36:21. > :36:29.animals on the front of the Jordan car. But this is remarkable, they
:36:29. > :36:33.are doing it for charity and it really is a worthwhile thing.
:36:33. > :36:38.known that you would like that. But one man scratching his head would
:36:38. > :36:43.be Stirling Moss. They did not wear outfits like that in his day. And
:36:43. > :36:48.you may have heard that he has finally hung up his racing gloves.
:36:48. > :36:58.But he can still put on that famous leather helmet and take a trip down
:36:58. > :36:59.
:36:59. > :37:45.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 46 seconds
:37:45. > :37:54.Very nice. So here we are, this is one of the biggest tests of a
:37:54. > :37:59.Formula 1 car in the world. How was it impure des? What was hard for as
:37:59. > :38:05.is hard for them. So many drivers leapt Silverstone because it has a
:38:05. > :38:10.lovely flow to it. And in my day there was a lack of downforce
:38:10. > :38:20.compared to the modern cars. Back then we did not even know what
:38:20. > :38:29.
:38:29. > :38:39.downforce was so we did not miss it. We have just done did down and
:38:39. > :38:45.stopped here. At this point you stand on the brakes. I'd bet you
:38:45. > :38:52.had a few tasty overtakes just here? There is a great place just
:38:52. > :39:02.at the end of the straight. If the car looks a bit out of control, it
:39:02. > :39:11.
:39:11. > :39:18.slows the others up anyway. Here we are on the newest piece of tarmac
:39:18. > :39:22.around the new Silverstone win. Just looking behind, we can see the
:39:22. > :39:32.right hand of Abbey. Last year in qualifying Sebastian Vettel took
:39:32. > :39:32.
:39:32. > :39:38.that flat at 255 kilometres an hour. If you had your way it would be the
:39:38. > :39:43.same circuit as in 1950. But it is important to make changes. Do you
:39:43. > :39:49.think they have managed to keep the integrity of the Silverstone?
:39:49. > :39:56.think so. I think the modern drivers are at right. If the car
:39:56. > :40:06.drivers like it is well that is the thing. If how does the old car
:40:06. > :40:18.
:40:18. > :40:25.cope? Tremendous. She feels really good, I tell you.
:40:25. > :40:29.What a guy. He never won here but he won twice at Aintree. Martin
:40:29. > :40:34.Whitmarsh from McLaren has joined us. We want to talk about this
:40:34. > :40:39.weekend but we first have to discuss blown Duff users, and
:40:39. > :40:43.incredibly exciting subject but central to Formula 1 at the moment.
:40:43. > :40:49.What has been decided for this weekend? Are all the cars running
:40:49. > :40:54.the same thing? The answer is I think everyone will be running the
:40:54. > :40:59.same thing. There is a limit to the extent which the throttles can be
:40:59. > :41:03.opened. But inevitably when you change the regulations even before
:41:03. > :41:08.qualifying then there will be winners and losers. The drivers on
:41:08. > :41:12.the front row today will probably be pleased with the outcome and
:41:12. > :41:17.Ferrari look happier than others coming out of the meeting. Those
:41:17. > :41:22.who fought back well feel that they had been disadvantaged. We have had
:41:22. > :41:28.very little man in to change the fundamentals so it is difficult for
:41:28. > :41:33.the drivers. It is a real change -- will shame that we are in this
:41:33. > :41:38.situation. Red Bull think they're running at a disadvantage. What
:41:38. > :41:43.does it do for McLaren? I could answer that better after
:41:43. > :41:47.qualifying! But we are not particularly happy. We're
:41:47. > :41:52.frantically adjusting the car. Not just the exhaust settings but how
:41:52. > :41:57.we put on the brakes, the style of the brakes. The whole balance of
:41:57. > :42:03.the car has changed. It sounds small but some people will be lucky
:42:03. > :42:08.and some not. It is all unsavoury, washing dirty linen in public. You
:42:08. > :42:13.are brought in the F-duct and you're allowed to continue with it
:42:14. > :42:18.for the season. How has this happened? I personally feel we have
:42:18. > :42:24.had blown deaf users now for 18 months and the proper thing would
:42:24. > :42:31.be to let it run to the end of the year. But clearly that is not what
:42:31. > :42:35.has happened. We have stumbled from one change to another so it does
:42:35. > :42:40.confuse people and it is not satisfactory. Formula 1 can do a
:42:40. > :42:48.better job than this. We need to do it better in future. Qualifying
:42:48. > :42:53.coming up, help is your basic practice here? Could there be a
:42:53. > :42:57.British victory? Intrudes we do not know. The factors we have just been
:42:57. > :43:03.talking about, it is that detail that makes the difference. We have
:43:03. > :43:10.not run as we were going to run in qualifying. The brakes are being
:43:10. > :43:15.changed, behold dynamics of the card. The engineers and the drivers
:43:15. > :43:20.between them have either done a good job and got lucky, otherwise
:43:20. > :43:26.they will be deeply unhappy. That is a real shame. Hopefully we will
:43:26. > :43:32.come out of it OK, but I'm not convinced. But it could play into
:43:32. > :43:39.your hands, Europe race pace during the season has been better than on
:43:39. > :43:43.Saturday. Reno we have to work on qualifying pace. It is a challenge
:43:43. > :43:50.for as at the moment this close to the qualifying session, we are
:43:50. > :43:56.changing the car. Well you had better make your way to the pit.
:43:56. > :44:01.And David, to the commentary box. Not long now until the start of
:44:01. > :44:08.qualifying. One man has dominated qualifying - Sebastian Vettel. We
:44:08. > :44:15.have seen his new helmet for the season. This is a great idea.
:44:15. > :44:23.not believe how intricate it is. It is minute detail. The links he has
:44:23. > :44:28.gone to do this is extraordinary. I love what he is doing here. That is
:44:28. > :44:33.his Helmut for this weekend, adorned with the engineers from
:44:33. > :44:40.this side of the garage. Red Bull have said that they're handicapped,
:44:40. > :44:45.and they have been so quick in qualifying. It is all full of
:44:45. > :44:50.intrigue. I have seen it time and again. It is a pity it is being
:44:50. > :44:56.done in such a public arena and in the middle of the season. So let's
:44:56. > :44:59.hope it does no big disadvantage to anybody. I'm pretty sure it will
:45:00. > :45:06.not disadvantage Red Bull so much that they fall out in qualifying.
:45:06. > :45:16.It is time for due one for the British Grand Prix with David
:45:16. > :45:25.
:45:25. > :45:32.speedy Silverstone for round nine of this year's Championship. The
:45:32. > :45:40.second longest circuit of the year. It includes six very fast corners,
:45:40. > :45:50.which challenged the drivers in the extreme. This is the new and
:45:50. > :45:54.
:45:54. > :45:58.reposition and rather spectacular track. Three sectors as always.
:45:58. > :46:02.Those other sectors which we will refer to when we talk about sector
:46:02. > :46:09.times during qualifying. It is dry at the moment, 26 degrees on the
:46:09. > :46:15.track. 61% humidity. But this is the driest we have seen the track
:46:15. > :46:23.so far. A lot of teams and drivers will be thoroughly relieved about
:46:23. > :46:28.that. It has been thoroughly interesting this weekend to watch
:46:28. > :46:36.the teams fighting each other over what they can and can't do with
:46:36. > :46:42.their throttles in the corners, and how it affects the race cars on
:46:42. > :46:45.track. We will try to explain that as the qualifying session unfolds.
:46:45. > :46:49.Four British drivers have won the British Grand Prix here at
:46:49. > :46:57.Silverstone at least twice. And one of them has finally made it up into
:46:57. > :47:01.the commentary box, David Coulthard. David, it is unprecedented for me
:47:01. > :47:06.that the teams are coming out of the meeting just minutes before
:47:06. > :47:11.qualifying starts. How will they be able to load whatever software or
:47:11. > :47:14.parts on to the car which they need for qualifying? Well, it is
:47:15. > :47:23.incredible. I'm not sure we were able to get to the bottom of it
:47:23. > :47:28.with Martin Whitmarsh just earlier on. They can do the programming, of
:47:28. > :47:38.course they can, that is what they have got the clever engineers for.
:47:38. > :47:39.
:47:39. > :47:42.But it is the actual effect on the car. It is all about guesswork.
:47:42. > :47:52.This is a prototype business, you're doing things which have
:47:52. > :47:52.
:47:52. > :47:55.never been done before. As soon as they roll-out of the pit lane, and
:47:55. > :47:59.a parc ferme, they cannot make changes to the car. So they will be
:47:59. > :48:08.hoping that they're legal as they get into the final stages of the
:48:08. > :48:13.race. There is that. I think this is unique, so the FIA may take a
:48:13. > :48:18.slightly different approach this weekend. That said, it is the only
:48:18. > :48:26.thing which could go wrong, somebody physically typing in the
:48:26. > :48:29.wrong number. The rest of it is all about hardware. Talking about great
:48:29. > :48:36.unknowns, with the wet track on Friday, and changeable conditions
:48:36. > :48:40.this morning, what do you think the drivers and teams know about this
:48:40. > :48:44.racetrack? This has happened so many times at Silverstone, you get
:48:44. > :48:51.changeable conditions. The surface does not really work that tyre that
:48:51. > :48:55.hard. It is big, open air, affected by the wind. Throw in the fact that
:48:55. > :49:03.this is the first time we have come here with Pirelli tyres, and many
:49:03. > :49:10.other things. That driver is going out into a journey of discovery. He
:49:10. > :49:17.does not know exactly what the car will do when he gets down to
:49:17. > :49:23.Village Corner. It will all be about who can be the most creative
:49:23. > :49:26.driver when it comes to qualify. had done thousands of laps of
:49:26. > :49:32.testing, but these cars have not been around here since last year's
:49:32. > :49:36.Grand Prix. That's a very good point. In Monaco, you need track
:49:36. > :49:41.time to build up confidence. Silverstone is at the other end of
:49:41. > :49:49.the extreme in terms of speed, but you do need track time. You're
:49:49. > :49:59.going through some of the corners at massive speeds. Your favourite
:49:59. > :50:03.Corner? Becketts, it is unbelievable. We're just a few
:50:03. > :50:09.seconds away from the first part of qualifying. We have 20 minutes to
:50:09. > :50:12.lose seven drivers. And qualifying begins. The cars stream out on to
:50:12. > :50:17.the racetrack, a lot of activity very early in the session,
:50:17. > :50:22.confirming what we have just been talking about. Grey skies, you do
:50:22. > :50:25.not know if it is going to rain. Also, they do not know their cars,
:50:25. > :50:33.so there will be more running happening at this stage of the
:50:33. > :50:37.session from the top teams. Let's here from Ted Kravitz. The other
:50:37. > :50:44.reason they're going out so soon is because they're being told that
:50:44. > :50:50.there is a chance of rain in 10 minutes. There is a big, heavy
:50:50. > :50:56.cloud above the pit straight. We do believe on the diffuser question
:50:56. > :51:05.that they're all running now in the configuration in which they ran in
:51:05. > :51:09.the practice session at 10 o'clock this morning. I think the Renault
:51:09. > :51:17.engined cars have lost out, that means Lotus and Red Bull, among
:51:17. > :51:21.others. I think Mercedes have gained, because they can steal fire
:51:21. > :51:25.four cylinders. It is all about KERS harvesting of energy, it is
:51:25. > :51:30.about gearshift, so many other knock-on effects. It seems to me
:51:30. > :51:35.that Ferrari, who have been very, very quiet on all of this, have
:51:35. > :51:44.gone a long in the slipstream of Mercedes Benz, probably Ross Brawn,
:51:44. > :51:48.and they seem very happy about it. What do you think, David? I would
:51:48. > :51:53.not want to play poker with Martin Whitmarsh. His face was not a happy
:51:53. > :51:59.face. If you're telling me they're gaining from running the Mercedes
:51:59. > :52:03.engine, then why was he standing there like that? I think it is the
:52:03. > :52:09.Mercedes team as much as anything who have gained. Mercedes have a
:52:09. > :52:14.different throttle system to the Renault-engined teams. It is
:52:14. > :52:18.curious that we have heard nothing from Ferrari. They're just saying,
:52:18. > :52:24.whatever they choose to do, we will go along with it - which is not
:52:24. > :52:29.normally how it is. John Todd, president of the FIA, very much
:52:29. > :52:35.active around the paddock here at Silverstone. There used to be
:52:35. > :52:38.rumours when he was running Ferrari that rule changes were made which
:52:38. > :52:45.would be favourable to Ferrari. I wonder what the conspiracy theories
:52:45. > :52:49.will be this weekend. We cannot see any of the parts on the car, you
:52:50. > :52:53.can hear them being much cleaner in the slow corners. You do not get
:52:53. > :52:58.that clattering sound from the exhaust. But putting all of that
:52:58. > :53:01.aside, this is about maximising this magnificent racetrack. So many
:53:01. > :53:08.challenges around here to get the perfect lap in. You can be the
:53:09. > :53:14.bravest, the best driver through corners like Copse and Becketts and
:53:14. > :53:21.still waste a couple of tenths of a second on braking. Of course, the
:53:21. > :53:27.stop watch is running all the time. One of the challenges at
:53:27. > :53:34.Silverstone is, you only use that brakes for 10% of the lap.
:53:34. > :53:39.Unusually, as we walked down the pit wall before coming up here, you
:53:39. > :53:47.could see teams putting on brake tape, they were desperately trying
:53:47. > :53:56.to get heat into the brakes. course, they do not brake for turn
:53:56. > :54:01.one. RADIO: light rain in Copse.
:54:01. > :54:09.Sebastien Vettel being told that there's already precipitation down
:54:09. > :54:13.at Copse Corner. That used to be the old turn one. Remember, all
:54:13. > :54:23.this does is to establish which seven drivers will will be losing
:54:23. > :54:24.
:54:24. > :54:34.from the first section of They will have to go again,
:54:34. > :54:43.
:54:43. > :54:47.racetrack. They know they have got to get out there and deliver time.
:54:47. > :54:52.They have gone out on the softer tyre, you can see the yellow
:54:52. > :54:56.banding. DAVID COULTHARD: This is the worst
:54:56. > :55:03.nightmare for the drivers, it is the perfect conditions for having a
:55:03. > :55:10.slightly shaken up grid. If it starts to read a more heavily, of
:55:10. > :55:12.course, they will be fixed into the course, they will be fixed into the
:55:12. > :55:15.positions they have achieved so far. This is a bit like going out for
:55:15. > :55:22.qualifying on a Friday morning when you have just rocked up to the
:55:22. > :55:28.venue. There has been so much rain. There has been no rubber going down
:55:28. > :55:33.from the other formulas. So, it really is an adventure. That's a
:55:33. > :55:37.good point. Normally you would be putting a nice coating of Pirelli
:55:37. > :55:42.rubber onto the track, preparing the track, but we did not have that
:55:42. > :55:46.on Friday. It was wet. And the session before this was the Porsche
:55:46. > :55:52.Super Cup, but they were running Michelin tyres, so they're
:55:52. > :55:58.effectively picking up whatever rubber was put down by the Porsches.
:55:58. > :56:07.The track is a living, evolving thing. Sebastien Vettel goes over
:56:07. > :56:10.the line in not a particularly fast time. He's looking for a hat-trick
:56:10. > :56:14.of pole positions here. We have got a yellow flag, we will keep an eye
:56:14. > :56:19.out for that. We're on board with Lewis Hamilton. He has done his
:56:19. > :56:27.personal best in the first sector. Alonso's flying for Ferrari also in
:56:27. > :56:33.the first sector. And that's Alonso, off the racetrack. It tends to be a
:56:33. > :56:38.bit more firm out there, and he is using that very well. Do you think
:56:38. > :56:46.he will have damage underneath the car? Well, it looked like there
:56:46. > :56:51.were some fairly big stones in that gravel. If he has damaged the
:56:51. > :56:56.underside of the car... Here, we are on board. He rides the kerb,
:56:56. > :57:00.gets on the power. Actually, you can see, he's just lost grip
:57:00. > :57:03.completely coming out of Brooklands. He has made a correction, and once
:57:03. > :57:12.he has done that, he is on a wet track. He has gone straight into
:57:12. > :57:20.the gravel at Luffield. What a strange incident that was. I have
:57:20. > :57:30.never seen a cargo off before in Formula 1. -- I have never seen a
:57:30. > :57:31.
:57:31. > :57:38.car go off there before in Formula 1. Now, going down the Hangar
:57:38. > :57:48.Straight,km livers and sight. He was on the throttle nice and early
:57:48. > :58:00.
:58:00. > :58:10.there. Yes, he went down to fourth That's to or three seconds slower
:58:10. > :58:13.
:58:13. > :58:17.than we expected. Clearly, the track is not in its prime condition.
:58:17. > :58:27.You can see tiny little splattering some rain. A massive amount of and
:58:27. > :58:32.
:58:32. > :58:42.a spear on the exit of Becketts. -- understeer. Understeer, that is a
:58:42. > :58:45.
:58:46. > :58:55.Barrichello is up into second place. Maldonado is absolutely flying for
:58:56. > :58:58.
:58:58. > :59:03.Williams. Massa goes over the line. He is fastest with that. Maldonado
:59:03. > :59:13.goes fastest on those soft tyres. The times will keep tumbling.
:59:13. > :59:19.Michael Schumacher only makes eighth position, though. Vettel in
:59:19. > :59:29.the background getting pretty close to the leading time. Lewis Hamilton,
:59:29. > :59:35.
:59:35. > :59:41.then. He goes past the old pits into Copse. You know that they're
:59:41. > :59:48.not absolutely getting a grip they normally expect yet. These cars are
:59:48. > :59:53.fuelled longer than you would normally use in qualifying. They're
:59:53. > :59:56.doing several laps here, so every lap, you're burning of a lap of
:59:56. > :00:06.fuel, which would gain you a tenth of the second. But the track
:00:06. > :00:09.
:00:09. > :00:13.Lewis Hamilton has got the hard tyres on, as he goes over in sixth
:00:13. > :00:23.place. The same for Jenson Button, such as not wasting a set of the
:00:23. > :00:30.
:00:30. > :00:40.What we are looking for, it is all about the 7th drivers who will turn
:00:40. > :00:42.
:00:42. > :00:51.into spectators and be the first of the midfield could get it wrong.
:00:51. > :01:00.Heikki Kovalainen has got the Lotus in in 16th place. So the told
:01:00. > :01:10.Rossouw cars would be the ones to drop out. And the new boy, Daniel
:01:10. > :01:13.
:01:13. > :01:19.avocado. He is in 24th place at the moment. Mark wherever it goes
:01:19. > :01:26.fastest, the man who was Supreme here in the race last year. He has
:01:26. > :01:33.looked good in every session this weekend, wet or dry. He goes to the
:01:33. > :01:43.front of the queue. Down in the danger zone, Mickey Harte felt. He
:01:43. > :01:43.
:01:43. > :01:53.is currently behind Heikki Kovalainen. It looks like we are at
:01:53. > :01:57.
:01:57. > :02:05.the only ones on the first time lap. In these conditions you want to get
:02:05. > :02:10.an extra lap or two in before you go to refuel. Absolutely, you want
:02:10. > :02:18.to make sure you have a reserve of fuel. Because there is also the
:02:18. > :02:23.uncertainty over the weather. or a yellow flag sign at the top of
:02:23. > :02:31.the screen. We will find out who that was. But some years about
:02:31. > :02:41.Fernando Alonso. Yes after it all a bit stones and pebbles in his
:02:41. > :02:42.
:02:42. > :02:49.diaries, he put in at a time that was good enough for effect.
:02:50. > :02:58.sorts of pieces of carbon fibre underneath. Classics Silverstone
:02:58. > :03:08.whether. The front runners have decided they can get through
:03:08. > :03:25.
:03:25. > :03:35.without risking a set of soft tyres. It would be a shock for the Tote

:03:53. > :04:00.Rossouw team if they dropped out of The Torro Rosso Guys are not going
:04:00. > :04:10.to be able to do faster times now with these conditions. So unless
:04:10. > :04:14.
:04:14. > :04:24.something remarkable happens in the next six minutes, that will be them
:04:24. > :04:28.
:04:28. > :04:33.in the bottom seven. They were happy with their performance in
:04:33. > :04:39.practice but that will not do them much good unless it is the down for
:04:39. > :04:45.tomorrow. The big winner of course is a Heikki Kovalainen in the lotus,
:04:45. > :04:52.going through to the second part of qualifying. Really outperforming
:04:52. > :04:59.his car, as we have seen so often. McLaren have sent both Lewis
:04:59. > :05:05.Hamilton and Jensen Button out on the soft tyres. They have seen it
:05:05. > :05:14.was raining. Not quite sure what they are doing. Maybe it is a
:05:14. > :05:20.software check? Not about ultimate lap time? Silverstone is such a
:05:20. > :05:25.wide open space that you have to be out on track before or you can get
:05:25. > :05:32.in a flying lap. If we have a wet qualifying session, they have got
:05:32. > :05:37.plenty of tyres any way for at the Grand Prix tomorrow. I was just
:05:37. > :05:47.wondering what the reason it might be for them going out on the soft
:05:47. > :05:51.tyres is if they have perhaps reprogrammed to something on the
:05:52. > :05:57.software. Are they perhaps checking something with the Billown diffuser.
:05:57. > :06:02.That is a very good. Because they are at the ball bring their cars
:06:02. > :06:11.through the weekend. I have never seen Christian Horner looking so
:06:11. > :06:17.unhappy on camera. They have been changing the rules between practice
:06:17. > :06:27.sessions, for goodness sake. When did that last happen? I do not
:06:27. > :06:33.recall having that during my career except for safety grounds. That was
:06:33. > :06:38.all on the basis of slowing down the cars. I agreed with heel, those
:06:38. > :06:48.where fundamental changes. But we knew look of those before we came
:06:48. > :07:10.
:07:10. > :07:16.There are already fixes in place for last year. Give them back a
:07:16. > :07:22.throttle cable and appear shift, that is what I say! The good old
:07:22. > :07:28.days, Martin! When you mention the noise of these cars, in first
:07:28. > :07:33.practice this morning we could hear the noise, the emotion. And that is
:07:33. > :07:39.why we need loud Formula 1 engines. You need to be able to hear that
:07:39. > :07:46.emotion, it is like a rock concert when they take to the track.
:07:46. > :07:56.Absolutely right. But this is all about qualifying one, so let us
:07:56. > :07:57.
:07:57. > :08:07.remember that. R Alguersuari, Ricky Ardboe, out of qualifying. The
:08:07. > :08:10.
:08:10. > :08:20.remaining drivers go through today the second part of qualifying. Then
:08:20. > :08:26.
:08:26. > :08:31.we found out which Concepts are working well. This situation with
:08:31. > :08:36.full-throttle is not new. They call it engine braking and that is
:08:36. > :08:41.adjusted to avoid locking the rear axles, that is something we has
:08:41. > :08:51.been doing for a long time. The driver would have just that to get
:08:51. > :08:58.the maximum performance from the car. If you can't really eat
:08:58. > :09:05.minimise that braking zone then you gain a lot of lap time. Only 8% of
:09:05. > :09:15.the lap is spent on the brake pedal here. One of the difficulties with
:09:15. > :09:19.
:09:19. > :09:24.this track is getting energy into the KERS system. It does not affect
:09:24. > :09:29.them of course if they are doing a flying lap. But with this change of
:09:29. > :09:37.conditions, and throwing in the rain, then it becomes difficult to
:09:37. > :09:45.recharge your battery packs. What do you read about going with the
:09:45. > :09:49.soft tyres? At think it was a case of whether you had a clear lap and
:09:49. > :09:59.Europcar was able to get the tyres working in a single lap. I think it
:09:59. > :10:02.
:10:02. > :10:09.is early days. Radio: it is going to get worse so we go straight away
:10:09. > :10:15.for flying laps. Interesting about going out on intermediate tyres, it
:10:15. > :10:24.has completely stopped raining now. It must presumably still be raining
:10:24. > :10:31.out the back. So the session has finished. The chequered flag is alt.
:10:31. > :10:41.And it is now beginning to dry quite rapidly. Mark Webber was the
:10:41. > :10:42.
:10:42. > :10:52.fastest man out there. The McLaren boys in a 7th and 11th. Paul di
:10:52. > :10:55.
:10:55. > :11:05.Resta et in 15th. Buemi, blog, it Daniel Ricciardo, they take no
:11:05. > :11:07.
:11:07. > :11:12.further part in qualifying. The fans are pretty happy that the
:11:12. > :11:17.rain has disappeared for the time being. And some of the teams as
:11:17. > :11:24.well. It is working in the dry here at Silverstone as far as Red Bull
:11:24. > :11:29.is concerned. But McLaren always planned to go out and when the rain
:11:29. > :11:33.came they did not change their plan and that is why we saw them on the
:11:33. > :11:39.soft tyres in the rain. I am flabbergasted, I'm really need to
:11:40. > :11:48.ask what was going on there. I'm at a loss to understand why you would
:11:48. > :11:52.even think about putting on soft tyres in a situation like that.
:11:52. > :11:57.are outside the Hispania racing team and hopefully we can speak to
:11:57. > :12:02.Daniel Ricciardo in a few minutes. He is a hot prospect for the future
:12:02. > :12:09.and is finally in Formula 1. Two men they are far more experienced
:12:09. > :12:13.both struggled in possession, Fernando Alonso and Filipe Massa.
:12:13. > :12:18.The intriguing thing is many think that these will changes may have
:12:18. > :12:22.been designed to favour Ferrari. There were certainly struggling
:12:22. > :12:28.with their car. Fernando Alonso was lucky to go through the gravel like
:12:28. > :12:33.that. Historically usually that cannot happen. To be able to
:12:33. > :12:37.continue is surprising to me and is probably a good sign for this new
:12:37. > :12:43.Silverstone circuit. They must have designed gravelled that it is
:12:43. > :12:49.possible to drive through. What does it like for a Daniel
:12:49. > :12:54.Ricciardo? His first ever qualifying session for Formula 1.
:12:55. > :12:59.It was interesting. The weather has made it an little more difficult.
:12:59. > :13:09.It would have been nice to get another run me the option tyres.
:13:09. > :13:14.But it was OK. I cannot expect too much at this stage. A long list of
:13:14. > :13:20.great world champions from your country. Are you the next one? The
:13:20. > :13:25.next Australian world champion? is too early to ask that question!
:13:25. > :13:31.But that is my long-term goal and that is the big dream. It is
:13:31. > :13:40.definitely part of the green bean year in Formula 1. What is the
:13:40. > :13:47.short term goal? Took us through the pinking between joining a team
:13:47. > :13:55.like Hispania? Arguably the slowest team in the sport at the moment.
:13:55. > :14:01.I'm quite fortunate to have the opportunity to race in Formula 1,
:14:01. > :14:05.and sooner than I expected. It is great that Red Bull and Hispania
:14:05. > :14:10.have come to an agreement and let me drive in the last 10 races. It
:14:10. > :14:19.is good for me to get the experience and learn what it takes
:14:19. > :14:27.and set a good foundation for hopefully along career in Formula 1.
:14:27. > :14:37.I am fortunate with my team-mate who has a lot of experience. I have
:14:37. > :14:39.
:14:40. > :14:49.got him to learn from. When we saw you racing with the juniors, where
:14:50. > :14:51.
:14:51. > :14:58.do you see your future? Potentially at Red Bull? That would be nice. It
:14:58. > :15:02.is a nice seat up there. I think a few people have compared me to
:15:02. > :15:08.Sebastian Vettel. I do not really know where that stands. But for me
:15:08. > :15:15.it is just to go out there and do as much as I can. It is definitely
:15:15. > :15:20.a good person to learn from. He is a bit of a role model when I was
:15:20. > :15:25.younger. So I have some good people I can't learn from and use them as
:15:25. > :15:30.a benchmark. I will try to be myself at the end of the day, but
:15:30. > :15:35.there are some classic guys out there I can take a leaf from.
:15:35. > :15:45.Although the places to start, this generates incredible crowds. What
:15:45. > :15:45.
:15:45. > :15:49.is it like to drive around in these Silverstone has always been a great
:15:49. > :15:52.circuit for me. I do not live too far from here. It is a second home.
:15:52. > :15:57.It is not Australia, but it is probably the second best on the
:15:57. > :16:03.list for me. The fans always come out, they're here early in the
:16:03. > :16:13.morning. It is lovely to have such a good atmosphere. Welcome to BBC
:16:13. > :16:17.
:16:17. > :16:20.London News. A ride in Formula 1. Thank you very much. One of the big
:16:20. > :16:25.stories in that session would be Heikki Kovalainen, making it
:16:25. > :16:34.through to the second part of qualifying. Yes, good news for them
:16:34. > :16:38.indeed. Other news this week, Hispania getting new investors,
:16:38. > :16:48.Virgin Racing tying up with McLaren on a technical liaison, as Force
:16:48. > :17:01.
:17:01. > :17:10.India do. And the Williams team MARTIN BRUNDLE: I was listening to
:17:10. > :17:14.some team radio there. Right now, we are in to qualifying two. 15
:17:14. > :17:21.minutes, and we're looking for the top 10 to go into the shoot-out.
:17:21. > :17:29.That looked like a set of dry tyres to me, David. I don't normally
:17:29. > :17:33.argue, but I am, it is a set of intermediates. It is surprising,
:17:33. > :17:43.from where we are looking, the track does not look two. But
:17:43. > :17:44.
:17:44. > :17:52.there's no harm, I guess, in doing a nice lap. They have got 14
:17:52. > :18:01.minutes available here. Heidfeld has gone out on soft tyres. Both
:18:01. > :18:04.Mercedes out on intermediates. They have only got four sets of these
:18:04. > :18:10.intermediate tyres for the whole weekend, including Friday practice.
:18:10. > :18:14.And they have used one set all ready. They cannot afford to burn a
:18:14. > :18:19.set of those up. DAVID COULTHARD: Yes, the drivers
:18:19. > :18:23.are just getting a view of the track, it will not do any harm to
:18:23. > :18:28.just go through those apexes and take-off the release agent which is
:18:28. > :18:34.on the new tyres. It always makes it a bit slippery for the first
:18:34. > :18:38.couple of corners, when you go out on a damp track. So these will end
:18:38. > :18:48.up being a perfectly prepared set of tyres. Is that were they're just
:18:48. > :18:56.doing, then? We have still got more than 30 minutes to go, and you have
:18:56. > :19:06.got to try and keep one eye on the weather. You can see, it is
:19:06. > :19:08.
:19:08. > :19:15.actually very wet down at the exit of Copse.
:19:15. > :19:24.Do you think Jenson is out on intermediate tyres as well? This
:19:24. > :19:30.looks to me like it is right in the middle. It is a challenging one.
:19:30. > :19:38.is indeed, because down where we are, near the new pit complex, it
:19:38. > :19:41.is dry enough for slicks. We saw the Red Bull coming through Copse
:19:41. > :19:46.and struggling with the amount of water on the track. So, they do
:19:46. > :19:50.have a bit of time before having to make that critical decision, but at
:19:50. > :19:57.the moment, I would say, go for slicks to maximise this end of the
:19:57. > :20:01.track, and then just tiptoe through Copse Corner. Fernando Alonso has
:20:01. > :20:09.gone out on intermediate tyres as well. I agree with you, David, it
:20:09. > :20:16.looks like it should be slicks to me, but we are not out there.
:20:16. > :20:20.TED KRAVITZ: no risk from the top teams at the moment. They know they
:20:20. > :20:27.will only have to do the one run on the soft tyres later to get through
:20:27. > :20:37.to the next round of qualifying. think everyone's just getting a
:20:37. > :20:40.little look at it right now. Interesting point from Ted - nobody
:20:40. > :20:44.wants to take risks on such a high- speed circuit, nobody wants to get
:20:44. > :20:49.caught out of position in qualifying. You need to get
:20:49. > :20:52.yourself running as near to the front as possible. It is a track
:20:52. > :20:58.where if you do make a mistake on the high-speed corners, you will
:20:58. > :21:08.almost certainly slam it into the barriers. That is why we love these
:21:08. > :21:22.
:21:22. > :21:28.traditional racetracks. Nick Maldonado goes quicker, he loves
:21:28. > :21:33.these conditions. He seems to be very comfortable out there. He was
:21:33. > :21:37.second quickest in the first part of qualifying. The Williams is not
:21:37. > :21:47.having any difficulty getting heat into those tyres, clearly. Even on
:21:47. > :21:52.
:21:52. > :21:59.Still, they're using the DRS. They can use it whenever they want in
:21:59. > :22:09.qualifying, but only in one place in the race, that's out of turn
:22:09. > :22:22.
:22:22. > :22:27.four, into the new complex. This is Vettel on the dry tyres.
:22:27. > :22:32.The times will be tumbling, as they find grip and confidence and belief
:22:32. > :22:42.that these cars will stick, as you turn into a Corner like this, at
:22:42. > :22:48.190mph. We saw Lewis Hamilton getting well out of the way coming
:22:48. > :22:52.through Woodcote. Did not want to get any accusation of getting in
:22:52. > :23:02.the way of Sebastien Vettel. But they are having to tiptoe all the
:23:02. > :23:23.
:23:23. > :23:32.way through that section. Now, we Schumacher has pitted, as has Lewis
:23:32. > :23:37.Hamilton. Presumably they will be going for a set of dry tyres. I did
:23:37. > :23:46.a test in Spain, and I went out on a set of intermediates on a bone
:23:46. > :23:52.dry track, and was six seconds slower. Kobayashi goes fastest. But
:23:52. > :24:00.it changes immediately, as Mark Webber goes fastest. The times are
:24:00. > :24:06.really beginning to come down now. We expect to see something in the 1
:24:06. > :24:12.minute 30s. That is if it is a bone dry track.
:24:12. > :24:17.DAVID COULTHARD: Track conditions here, we have not had a proper dry
:24:17. > :24:22.run for any of these drivers. So we could see the times tumbling at the
:24:22. > :24:32.end of this session. Absolutely right. We could see the first big
:24:32. > :24:35.
:24:35. > :24:45.surprise of the day. Sutil has just gone fastest. Very slow in the
:24:45. > :24:53.
:24:53. > :24:57.first sector from Vettel, that's Only seven minutes remaining.
:24:57. > :25:04.Several top drivers in the drop zone at the moment. Five of them
:25:04. > :25:07.have done no laps. Seven minutes remaining. And it is one minute 45
:25:07. > :25:14.to get out of the pit lane and get around before the chequered flag
:25:14. > :25:18.drops. This is going to get very interesting and very busy indeed.
:25:19. > :25:23.Fernando Alonso, we have already seen him barging through the gravel
:25:23. > :25:29.traps and the service roads in the first part of qualifying. We have
:25:29. > :25:34.not got any sector times for him yet. A little sprinkle of rain
:25:34. > :25:38.would spoil a few drivers' ambitions this weekend. We only
:25:38. > :25:45.have three cars currently on track, with six and a half minutes to go.
:25:45. > :25:49.That will suddenly change. We will see all of the cars about jockeying
:25:49. > :25:59.for position. They will be trying to make sure that they do not get
:25:59. > :26:00.
:26:00. > :26:03.blocked by anyone. That was the new camera shot. Here's the old pit
:26:03. > :26:07.straight, where they have started this Grand Prix for 61 years. It
:26:07. > :26:17.will be different tomorrow. It looks like it is drying out a bit
:26:17. > :26:23.
:26:23. > :26:32.Fernando Alonso, lifting off at Copse, that would normally be taken
:26:32. > :26:35.in seventh gear. He is just taking a look on the soft tyres. At one
:26:35. > :26:43.sounded like a motorbike going through there, how gentle he was
:26:43. > :26:50.being with opening the throttle, going through Stowe. He will let it
:26:50. > :26:56.go now, because this is where the time starts. Alonso sets about
:26:56. > :27:06.doing a representative time. He's only in a dingy at the moment. And
:27:06. > :27:11.
:27:11. > :27:20.The end of the pit lane is unrestricted on speed. Lewis
:27:20. > :27:28.Hamilton now also starting his first fast lap. Ted... It is three
:27:28. > :27:33.laps for all of them now. All six top cars around the soft tyre now.
:27:33. > :27:43.But Webber well up there on the soft tyres. Many of the teams are
:27:43. > :27:43.
:27:43. > :27:48.expecting Mark Webber to benefit from the changes. People think
:27:48. > :27:54.Vettel was benefiting from the weird things the engine was doing
:27:54. > :27:58.when lifting the throttle. That's an interesting concept, we will
:27:58. > :28:08.debate that later on. We will see if it does indeed benefit Mark
:28:08. > :28:18.
:28:18. > :28:22.Webber. We have 15 of the 17 cars on track at the moment. Sutil is
:28:22. > :28:27.not out yet. It is going to be last man over the line, that's the
:28:27. > :28:35.critical thing now. DAVID COULTHARD: Yes, there is no
:28:35. > :28:40.question that the times will be tumbling. The last few minutes of
:28:41. > :28:44.this part of qualifying are absolutely critical. If any of what
:28:44. > :28:49.you would expect to be the regular top 10 runners make any mistake or
:28:49. > :28:56.get out of position, then they will not get through. Have you ever
:28:56. > :29:00.known 15 minutes to go so fast? this is the worst nightmare for the
:29:00. > :29:03.drivers, changing conditions in qualifying. They want to have
:29:03. > :29:07.stable conditions so that they can extract every last bit of
:29:07. > :29:13.performance out of the car, a known quantity. Right now, every Corner
:29:13. > :29:18.is a journey of discovery. And what we want is the fast drivers at the
:29:18. > :29:24.back of the grid tomorrow for the best race! All 17 cars out there as
:29:25. > :29:34.expected. Michael Schumacher does that. This is not for grid
:29:35. > :29:39.
:29:39. > :29:44.positions, this is just to sort out who will be in the top 10 shoot-out.
:29:44. > :29:50.Button has just gone over the line. It is all about timing your lap to
:29:50. > :29:55.be last man over the line. Webber's the fastest man in the middle
:29:56. > :29:59.sector. Maldonado has gone fourth. Ted tells us that McLaren have
:29:59. > :30:09.fuelled for three laps. That's the sensible thing to do - keep running
:30:09. > :30:24.
:30:24. > :30:33.Rosberg just dipping his left hand tyres into the water of Farm corner.
:30:33. > :30:41.Hamilton still up in it fifth-place. Nico Rosberg up there and all of a
:30:41. > :30:49.sudden Barrichello out of the action. Paul di Resta rap is about
:30:49. > :30:55.to start what will be his only flying lap. He has actually
:30:55. > :31:02.finished that one in 6th place just ahead of Maldonado. Schumacher in
:31:02. > :31:09.the top 10 at the moment. Who will get over at the line just before at
:31:09. > :31:13.the flag drops? The driver is beginning to find the confidence
:31:13. > :31:23.they need to keep the throttle nailed to the floor up in these
:31:23. > :31:34.
:31:34. > :31:44.spectacular corners. You can see the heat haze. Kobayashi his 5th at
:31:44. > :31:52.
:31:52. > :32:00.the moment. Hill can get the lap completed? There is so much action
:32:00. > :32:04.to come. Just 15 seconds before at the flag drops. Who is likely to
:32:04. > :32:14.get thrown there and get that time in? That part of the track is
:32:14. > :32:23.
:32:23. > :32:33.remarkably clear. It is Alonso, Maldonado and Rosberg, at these
:32:33. > :32:35.
:32:35. > :32:45.times will be their final times there. Michael Schumacher...
:32:45. > :32:49.
:32:49. > :32:59.Hamilton has pitted. Pressure bear for him. Jensen Button is the 14th.
:32:59. > :33:01.
:33:01. > :33:11.Club is now the final quarter of the lap. MS Jensen Button and makes
:33:11. > :33:14.
:33:14. > :33:24.it. Michael Schumacher will take no further part in qualifying. Paul di
:33:24. > :33:34.Resta are just squeezes in as Des Maldonado. Mickey Harte felt only
:33:34. > :33:35.
:33:35. > :33:45.managing 16th. Let's see who the top 10 are not including this man,
:33:45. > :33:58.
:33:58. > :34:04.Michael Schumacher in full stop -- I think he will be a thoroughly
:34:04. > :34:14.disappointed with that. It is Massa who has emerged from that chaos to
:34:14. > :34:16.
:34:16. > :34:25.be part of it. Ferried in that session was Fernando Alonso. --
:34:25. > :34:35.there it. Paul di Resta has out qualified his team-mate Adrian
:34:35. > :34:49.
:34:49. > :34:54.Sutil in his seven out of 10 qualifying races. Situations like
:34:54. > :34:59.this are constantly changing and we have seen how badly it can affect
:34:59. > :35:09.people. It was all of that for Michael Schumacher. He just did not
:35:09. > :35:15.
:35:15. > :35:22.get it together. Rubens Barrichello it starts 15th on the grid. Also
:35:22. > :35:30.struggling in dodgy conditions. But one man made it work. Heikki
:35:30. > :35:34.Kovalainen. 17th on the grid is not bad. It is better than we were
:35:34. > :35:41.expecting. The car has been functioning well and the work
:35:41. > :35:47.continues. Today the conditions where they bring us a little. We
:35:47. > :35:51.have to do that every time. much is going on between Europe and
:35:51. > :35:58.you're engineers with these changeable conditions? It is hard
:35:58. > :36:03.to work out what to do. It is. You want to get out on the dry tyres as
:36:03. > :36:07.much as possible. So at the beginning when it was dry we
:36:07. > :36:17.thought, let's go out and then it the second time I went out, it
:36:17. > :36:21.rained. How are you now going to drag Team Lotus, because you seem
:36:22. > :36:28.to be leading the team, how are you going to drag them into the middle
:36:28. > :36:33.group? There are many things to improve on. I involved myself a lot
:36:33. > :36:38.in these kind of discussions. We had great people in the team and I
:36:38. > :36:44.think most of their designers and engineers do not yet have the up-
:36:44. > :36:50.to-date facilities and the capacity to do what the guy is in other
:36:50. > :36:56.teams are doing. It will take time but I'm remained patient, keeping
:36:56. > :37:06.my focus and making sure I am in shape 100% every time. It will just
:37:06. > :37:11.
:37:11. > :37:16.take some time. Some people seem to be a little impatient. That is how
:37:16. > :37:24.you get the best out of Europe drivers. He warned the best from
:37:24. > :37:28.this team. What do you make about all the talk this weekend about
:37:28. > :37:36.blown Duff users, and how the cars have had to be set up minutes
:37:36. > :37:42.before qualifying? I has been trying to keep it simple. And just
:37:43. > :37:46.change the balance slightly according to what happens. I just
:37:46. > :37:53.keep it simple and I hope the debate will be sorted out
:37:53. > :38:03.eventually. And to make it such a way as the fans and everywhere else
:38:03. > :38:12.
:38:12. > :38:18.knows what it is going on. Well done, you have played it through to
:38:18. > :38:28.the second part of qualifying. Have a good one tomorrow. We can now
:38:28. > :38:31.
:38:31. > :38:36.hear from Jarno Trulli. I suppose the rain curtailed
:38:36. > :38:40.anything out there today? Possession was cut short because of
:38:40. > :38:47.the rain and the first round was not good for me. I have been
:38:47. > :38:50.struggling with the car all weekend. But the conditions have changed so
:38:50. > :38:58.often this weekend, it must be difficult to get comfortable in the
:38:59. > :39:06.car? The whole weekend has been difficult for me. I never felt
:39:06. > :39:13.comfortable to push it hard enough. So the poll position should doubt,
:39:13. > :39:18.with three British drivers in the top 10. Sounds good. Sounds amazing.
:39:18. > :39:23.Paul di Resta or yet again, he has surprised a lot of people. He is so
:39:23. > :39:26.focused and clinical in everything he does, he is a breath of fresh
:39:26. > :39:32.air in Formula 1 this year and I hope he has a good qualifying
:39:32. > :39:39.session. Time to hand back to our commentators. It has been frantic,
:39:39. > :39:44.we have had meetings minutes before qualifying. But three British
:39:44. > :39:49.drivers are all in the hunt for pole position. It could be very
:39:49. > :39:58.special. And it is the stop watch that has the will of the answers in
:39:58. > :40:03.Formula 1. Sebastian Vettel, seven pole positions and one thoroughly
:40:03. > :40:10.disappointing second place on the grid. Who can stop him being on the
:40:10. > :40:20.opposition here at the British Grand Prix?
:40:20. > :40:33.
:40:33. > :40:39.Qualifying three begins, the top 10 lacking in grip. Ted is in the pits.
:40:39. > :40:49.The teams are expecting some rain and have sent everyone out on the
:40:49. > :40:59.
:40:59. > :41:04.soft tyres. Many was just one lap of fuel on board. Are a changeable
:41:04. > :41:13.day like today, they may as well get out there and see how far they
:41:13. > :41:19.can get up the grid. Yes driver confidence is a big factor. There's
:41:19. > :41:25.no benefit from sitting in the pits at all. Maldonado has gone out.
:41:25. > :41:33.Paul di Resta that has gone out. Nine of the tent runners take to
:41:33. > :41:42.the race track. No other beginning you asked who was going to stop
:41:42. > :41:52.Sebastian Vettel. Interestingly in these changing conditions, I'm
:41:52. > :41:52.
:41:52. > :42:02.trying to look through the statistics to see if he has ever
:42:02. > :42:02.
:42:02. > :42:07.been so slow before it. Just look at those clouds. Very threatening
:42:07. > :42:12.as Sebastian Vettel starts his lapse. I still would not bet
:42:12. > :42:17.against this young man who has this heat, add the brain and the card to
:42:17. > :42:27.deliver just about anything he wants. But I think he is more under
:42:27. > :42:29.
:42:29. > :42:39.pressure today than we have seen him for a long time. This is
:42:39. > :42:45.
:42:45. > :42:55.Luffield, a never ending, clumsy right hander. Look at him and
:42:55. > :43:10.
:43:10. > :43:18.Vettel literally in his sights on the track and will usually be able

:43:28. > :43:42.
:43:42. > :43:52.faster. It has not been a good lap in the final part of the lap.
:43:52. > :43:54.
:43:54. > :44:04.Rosberg has gone up into third place. Does Jensen Button confirm
:44:04. > :44:06.
:44:06. > :44:14.that McLaren are struggling? He does indeed. That is not looking at
:44:14. > :44:24.old good for McLaren. McLaren are definitely struggling. Fernando
:44:24. > :44:34.Alonso is the closest contender to pole position. It looks like
:44:34. > :44:34.
:44:34. > :44:44.Ferrari either meant to challenge. -- are the men to challenge. Paul
:44:44. > :44:59.

:45:39. > :45:41.
:45:41. > :45:51.The provisional pole sitter at the moment is Mark Webber. Kobayashi
:45:51. > :46:06.
:46:06. > :46:11.There's Mark Webber, we can see that he has got a set of soft tyres
:46:11. > :46:16.on, brand, spanking new ones, no doubt, to give the maximum amount
:46:16. > :46:22.of grip. You do sense that Mark Webber, surely he senses, he can
:46:22. > :46:27.beat Vettel today. DAVID COULTHARD: It looks like Mark
:46:27. > :46:31.has got a couple of tenths to find in the middle sector, but he has
:46:31. > :46:37.got Sebastiaan covered in the first and third sectors, as we speak.
:46:37. > :46:41.TED KRAVITZ: Something which might explain Hamilton's slow pace, that
:46:42. > :46:45.was the soft set of tyres which they went out on at the end of Q1,
:46:45. > :46:52.so they would have had the best performance already taken out of
:46:52. > :46:56.those tyres. Would you expect that to account for two seconds, David?
:46:56. > :47:01.No, I would imagine it could be half a second, if they had been
:47:01. > :47:06.lightly used in that first part of qualifying, but I would be very
:47:06. > :47:10.surprised. You have got to look at this, Lewis is more than half a
:47:10. > :47:15.second off in the third sector alone, and there's not many corners
:47:15. > :47:25.on that sector. It is just starting to spit with rain. Have we already
:47:25. > :47:32.got the top 10 on the grid? Brand new soft tyres for Jenson. Brand
:47:32. > :47:39.new soft tyres for Lewis Hamilton as well. When it is streaming off
:47:39. > :47:42.your visor at 100mph, or 200mph, it is not what you need. The horrible
:47:42. > :47:45.thing for drivers in these situations is, you do not know
:47:46. > :47:51.until you get the car into the corner just how much grip you will
:47:51. > :47:56.have. If you find out in the middle of cabinet at 180mph, if there is
:47:56. > :48:00.not as much grip as you anticipated, then you could be in trouble. I
:48:00. > :48:04.hope this is not the end of the shoot-out, but I fear it is. That's
:48:04. > :48:08.why these are 10 of the finest drivers in the world, because
:48:08. > :48:12.that's what they do, they cope with challenges like this. They have to
:48:12. > :48:16.believe the car will stick, and if it goes into the barriers, then so
:48:16. > :48:26.be it. RADIO: We believe there is light
:48:26. > :48:27.
:48:27. > :48:37.rain falling at the south of the circuit. His engineer sells like an
:48:37. > :48:42.
:48:42. > :48:51.air traffic controller. It did not So, Button, into the pit straight.
:48:51. > :48:57.Almost cautious on his out lap. What did you think of that? It did
:48:57. > :49:01.not look like he had absolute faith in the car. No, he has backed out
:49:01. > :49:06.of it. Jenson Button has delivered his lap time for qualifying for the
:49:06. > :49:10.British Grand Prix, and it is only good enough for fifth place. He's
:49:10. > :49:20.not going to get back around to do a time. I would not be surprised if
:49:20. > :49:21.
:49:21. > :49:25.he gets on the radio describing his woes. This man, Nico Rosberg, has
:49:25. > :49:33.done a personal best first sector, fourth tenths off the pace. That
:49:33. > :49:36.would get him in amongst the top five, round and about Jenson.
:49:36. > :49:46.Jenson has decided there is not anything in it for him, and he
:49:46. > :49:50.
:49:50. > :49:57.might regret that. What can Rosberg do? He's the fastest man if anybody
:49:57. > :50:03.at the first straight-line speed measuring point. He got out of
:50:03. > :50:09.shape there. It is another personal best middle section. This is a
:50:09. > :50:15.Super brave lap from Nico Rosberg. He has backed out of it. Such a
:50:15. > :50:25.shame. As you say, that was usually brave coming out on to the turn one.
:50:25. > :50:30.
:50:30. > :50:34.Just to wet coming in to Stowe, sadly. You could see the car trying
:50:34. > :50:40.to get away from him there. Normally, the car would be just
:50:40. > :50:44.glued to the track. Lewis Hamilton starts just tenth on the grid. We
:50:44. > :50:54.should see a stellar performance from him in the Grand Prix tomorrow.
:50:54. > :51:03.
:51:03. > :51:13.This is the top 10 for tomorrow's The second row of the grid, all-
:51:13. > :51:16.
:51:16. > :51:24.Ferrari. Button, fifth. Di Resta, sensationally, sixth place. And a
:51:24. > :51:34.great effort from Maldonado in seventh. Kobayashi is becoming a
:51:34. > :51:37.
:51:37. > :51:42.world-class driver. He starts in eighth. All through qualifying, we
:51:42. > :51:45.have had their headmaster standing behind us, checking us out, a man
:51:45. > :51:50.who must have very big feet, because we have had to try and fill
:51:50. > :51:53.his shoes, Mr Murray Walker himself. He has been keeping an eye on us,
:51:53. > :51:58.to make sure we're doing this properly. Wonderful to see you,
:51:58. > :52:02.what is your take on that session? You're making me feel very
:52:02. > :52:08.embarrassed first of all. My immediate reaction, Martin, is,
:52:08. > :52:12.nothing changes. We have got Red Bull first and second. It did not
:52:12. > :52:17.matter whether they were hot blowing, cold blowing, whether it
:52:17. > :52:22.was wet, whether it was a dry, the two top blokes come out yet again,
:52:22. > :52:31.demonstrating that that Red Bull car is the complete package.
:52:31. > :52:34.you happy to see Webber ahead of Vettel? I'm delighted. I like
:52:34. > :52:39.Sebastien Vettel enormously as a chap, I think he's a brilliant
:52:39. > :52:42.driver, but I have got a big soft spot, emotionally, for Mark Webber.
:52:42. > :52:46.He's such a nice bloke, he has come all away for Australia and fought
:52:46. > :52:51.his way up through the ranks. He won here last year, pole position
:52:51. > :52:56.this year, so fingers crossed for him tomorrow. Do you see a big
:52:56. > :53:00.warning sign out for the McLaren's, they're miles off the pace...?
:53:00. > :53:05.is very worrying. McLaren are always there or thereabouts. You
:53:05. > :53:11.have driven for them, you know. You have only got to look at the
:53:11. > :53:17.panoply of stars who have become world champions for McLaren. But
:53:17. > :53:20.they're going through a bad period at the present moment. They must be
:53:20. > :53:25.bitterly ruing the day that they lost Adrian Newey, because that's
:53:25. > :53:30.when things changed. Kamui Kobayashi, the fans love the way he
:53:30. > :53:35.drives the car. And Paul di Resta, look at that, top six in his first
:53:35. > :53:43.British Grand Prix. He has not even been in single TVs to bracing for
:53:43. > :53:47.four years. -- single-seater racing. He was doing touring cars in
:53:47. > :53:51.Germany, a very demanding discipline, and he won that
:53:51. > :53:56.Championship. He is not in the best team, but Force India are doing
:53:56. > :54:01.jolly well. They have got Mercedes engines and drive line. For di
:54:01. > :54:06.Resta to come here for the very first time in Formula 1 and qualify
:54:06. > :54:10.sixth on the grid is a mighty achievement. It indicates that he
:54:10. > :54:16.might well be in an even better team next year, maybe even Mercedes
:54:16. > :54:22.Benz. You never know, we certainly have got some great young drivers
:54:22. > :54:26.coming through. Lewis Hamilton, one of the very best, the fastest, the
:54:26. > :54:33.bravest, he does like up the racetrack, but not this afternoon,
:54:33. > :54:39.Murray... No, tenth. If he was despondent and depressed before,
:54:39. > :54:46.he's going to be even more so now. But, Martin, unless I am very much
:54:46. > :54:54.mistaken, Heikki Kovalainen, for Lotus, got in to Q2 for the first
:54:54. > :54:58.time. I think he might have crept in earlier on in the season. But
:54:58. > :55:05.let's look a bit further down. Michael Schumacher, who has won
:55:05. > :55:09.here three times, 13th on the grid. How do you see it? There's the only
:55:09. > :55:15.man, on the right, that seems to be able to potentially disrupt Red
:55:15. > :55:23.Bull. And he has got to get past by the Vettel or Webber or both, to do
:55:23. > :55:32.so. He has got a hard furrow to plough, Fernando Alonso. Indeed, he
:55:32. > :55:42.has. So, Sebastien Vettel, absolutely right, he has still got
:55:42. > :55:43.
:55:43. > :55:48.it at the front of the grid. MURRAY WALKER: what is your take on
:55:48. > :55:52.Maldonado? I was a bit lukewarm about him earlier in the season,
:55:52. > :55:57.but he has come alive in the last couple of races, and starting
:55:57. > :56:01.seventh here, with the Cosworth engine, terrific. I agree, when I
:56:01. > :56:05.saw him in testing, he seem to be half a second behind a car at all
:56:05. > :56:08.times, but he's really getting on with it now. This is the pole
:56:08. > :56:12.position lap for Mark Webber. It happened very early on in the
:56:12. > :56:17.session, with that sprinkling of rain. At the time you would not
:56:17. > :56:22.necessarily know that this would be pole position. Tomorrow, in the
:56:22. > :56:29.race, they will be switching off the DRS at this point. This is
:56:29. > :56:34.Luffield, a Valley Lake apex. And then you just let it go through
:56:34. > :56:43.Woodcote corner, one of the finest pieces of racetrack anywhere in the
:56:43. > :56:48.world. Fantastic. Go For It, Murray, take us through Becketts. Becketts,
:56:48. > :56:53.a tremendously fast complex. When they clear it, just listen to the
:56:53. > :56:59.engine note, as he goes through the gears. Mark Webber, and now, it's
:56:59. > :57:05.going to be the long drag a downer to Stowe, where there has been so
:57:05. > :57:11.much action in the past. Down through the gears, beautiful, now,
:57:11. > :57:15.down into the Vale, and Club corner. I am still trying to get orientated
:57:15. > :57:20.at this new Silverstone, because we are right down at the bottom of the
:57:20. > :57:23.circuit, compared with last year. Absolutely, but luckily for mild
:57:23. > :57:30.weather, he has orientated himself very quickly indeed to this
:57:30. > :57:35.racetrack. Not a spectacularly fast lap, but of course, we know the
:57:36. > :57:39.track is pretty green. But fast enough to beat the rest of them.
:57:39. > :57:45.What do you think about Mark's psychological feelings at the
:57:45. > :57:49.present moment? He has been out- qualified time after time by Vettel.
:57:49. > :57:52.He's a grim, determined chap. I suspect he could see his chances
:57:52. > :57:58.slipping away. If there has been any bad luck at Red Bull this year,
:57:58. > :58:01.it has been his, invariably, but now he has got back on top by youth.
:58:01. > :58:08.Yes, and I think he has been getting on top of these Pirelli
:58:08. > :58:13.tyres. We know that Mark Webber really does excel in adversity. We
:58:13. > :58:20.saw him here last year, going on and winning the race. Murray, it
:58:20. > :58:25.has been wonderful to see you again. I think young Jake is ready to pick
:58:25. > :58:34.the show up. Lovely to have you both reunited. Murray, thank you
:58:35. > :58:37.very much indeed. That was the highlight of the weekend. What is
:58:37. > :58:45.more nerve-racking, driving at the British Grand Prix or commentating
:58:45. > :58:48.with having Murray walker standing 2ft behind you. I do not want to be
:58:48. > :58:54.a turkey voting for Christmas, but I really enjoyed the qualifying
:58:54. > :59:00.session, listening to Murray and Martin together. Murray summed it
:59:00. > :59:05.up, nothing changes. Loads of Tor Bay for this session, how will the
:59:05. > :59:09.new changes affect things, but Red Bull were fastest yet again. Yes,
:59:09. > :59:14.but there is a something lurking behind them, and that is two
:59:14. > :59:17.Ferraris. They make unbelievably good starts, and the ball will be
:59:18. > :59:21.scratching their heads tonight, they will be very wary of the
:59:21. > :59:27.Ferrari. Everybody believes this rule change has favoured Ferrari.
:59:27. > :59:35.We will have to wait until tomorrow to find out. It seems to have
:59:35. > :59:38.favoured Mark Webber, but what about McLaren? I think it is too
:59:38. > :59:46.early to say who it has favoured. That was a very unusual qualifying
:59:47. > :59:51.session. It remains to be seen. But McLaren, Lewis Hamilton, in tenth
:59:51. > :59:56.Place, clearly disappointing for him. I will be curious to know
:59:56. > :00:00.exactly what went on. I did not see him going off the track anywhere.
:00:00. > :00:05.Whether it was just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
:00:05. > :00:12.thing is for sure, the person who splits them, for me, is Paul di
:00:12. > :00:17.Resta. He has done a remarkable job. The family, everyone is here for
:00:17. > :00:21.Paul. It is a remarkable story. Nobody really gave him the
:00:21. > :00:31.opportunity before, and now that Force India have done so, they will
:00:31. > :00:33.
:00:33. > :00:38.Good news and bad news for British motor racing on the track. Good
:00:38. > :00:42.news and bad news for you guys as well. Because of the awful weather
:00:42. > :00:50.in Scotland that golf is delayed by the good news is we will be staying
:00:50. > :00:55.with you a little longer until the top of the hour. 28 to talk about.
:00:55. > :01:00.Pulled a rest up, let us remind you that this is the first time he has
:01:00. > :01:06.qualified in Formula 1. So a great performance from him and here he is
:01:06. > :01:13.now. You are a man of few words. But even you can't crack a smile at
:01:14. > :01:17.that. This weekend has been tough. The unpredictable weather, and
:01:17. > :01:22.coming to the British Grand Prix not having done it a race on the
:01:22. > :01:29.track. But I have grown in confidence in the car and I think
:01:29. > :01:35.that was progress. And any time we have been on the track this weekend
:01:35. > :01:40.we have been competitive. The raw from your family when they saw the
:01:41. > :01:50.rain coming down - it must be the first time Scottish people have
:01:51. > :01:51.
:01:51. > :01:56.been delighted to see the range! is definitely worked for me. We did
:01:56. > :02:03.a good lap. Credit to the team because they have got the car
:02:03. > :02:10.working well. We sold earlier when you're interviewed with David, you
:02:10. > :02:14.pointed out his youthful looks on the pillar board. Could you will
:02:14. > :02:20.really surprise us and do something like that or is the car just a
:02:20. > :02:25.little too far away? I think to be realistic that is not a realistic
:02:25. > :02:32.target. But we aim to get into the third round of qualifying and we
:02:32. > :02:37.have done that. We took the chance to run the tyres and that has paid
:02:37. > :02:45.off. And I think tomorrow a positive step would be some good
:02:45. > :02:51.points ahead of us. Is it too early to look at where your future lies?
:02:51. > :02:56.The team is going for it. Are you committed to them all ready for the
:02:56. > :03:01.next season? Other teams must be looking at these great performances
:03:01. > :03:07.you were doing so early in your career. I am committed to Force
:03:07. > :03:11.India. They made a commitment to me and I'm trying to do the best job
:03:11. > :03:16.possible for them. I think the end of the year is when you sit down
:03:17. > :03:22.and think about where the opportunities come. But I'm happy
:03:22. > :03:28.in this environment. Formula 1 is a difficult place to predict anything
:03:28. > :03:31.but we can't look back on how the season has gone for you. Only twice
:03:31. > :03:37.this year you're team-mate, renowned for being a fast driver,
:03:37. > :03:45.has managed to look out qualified you. Where have you found the speed
:03:45. > :03:51.in qualifying? Adrian has pushed me on. We are probably the closest
:03:51. > :03:56.driver pairing at the moment. He beat me at the last one. But you
:03:56. > :04:03.can judge yourself on him. Obviously I want to be competitive
:04:03. > :04:08.against him and beat him. You will hope for many happy memories
:04:08. > :04:12.tomorrow. You would like to join the holy trinity of Scottish
:04:12. > :04:18.winners here. But plenty of memories for all the other boys who
:04:18. > :04:28.have managed to come here and conker Silverstone. Tomorrow is
:04:28. > :04:31.
:04:31. > :04:41.going to be pretty special. You have to beat 41 seconds, that
:04:41. > :05:12.
:05:12. > :05:22.We have no chance. D'you shake its hand? Don't look at it, don't talk
:05:22. > :05:25.
:05:25. > :05:33.to it. Just let it walk by. Do you have a girlfriend? Is she wearing a
:05:33. > :05:42.helmet as well? Brilliant. That is only ever going
:05:42. > :05:47.to be a one-way conversation. Plenty of action tomorrow. But also
:05:47. > :05:52.much for us to talk about right now. Let's hear it from the guys who
:05:52. > :05:58.were quickest on track in these changeable conditions. Mark, what
:05:58. > :06:04.is it about you on Ms Silverstone circuit? I'm not sure. I have
:06:04. > :06:10.always enjoyed driving here. You have to put it all together, you
:06:10. > :06:15.have to apply yourself. It was a mixed session for everyone. Even
:06:15. > :06:20.the build up yesterday with the weather. It was important to make
:06:20. > :06:30.sure that every lap counted because you never knew it was going to be
:06:30. > :06:31.
:06:31. > :06:38.the one that did count. So in the end I am happy with the job that we
:06:38. > :06:43.did. It is easy to slip up in conditions like that. So it was a
:06:43. > :06:47.great job from the team and we are up in a good position for tomorrow.
:06:47. > :06:52.Sebastian, there has been a lot going on in the run-up to
:06:52. > :07:01.qualifying. Was that the most pressure you have felt under during
:07:01. > :07:06.the season? I think it was a difficult start with the conditions
:07:06. > :07:12.changing. It can affect different parts of the circuit. It is
:07:12. > :07:20.difficult to see where it is wet so you rely on the experience of the
:07:20. > :07:25.lap before. If you ride flat-out and then it is still damp it is
:07:25. > :07:31.easy to go or off-track. But in the end it was dry and it was a shame
:07:31. > :07:36.that we could not have got the second run full stock all in all I
:07:36. > :07:44.think it was a good result for us today especially with the amount of
:07:44. > :07:50.talk going in to that qualifying. So it is good to see that we are
:07:50. > :07:56.still on top of our game and can still produce reasonably quick lap
:07:56. > :08:02.times. Tomorrow I think anything can happen, that circuit is quite
:08:02. > :08:05.tough on the tyres. Fernando, you're off the track in the first
:08:05. > :08:12.part of qualifying and flirting with disaster but you came through
:08:12. > :08:19.at the end to be just one 10th of the poll. It was the best
:08:20. > :08:26.qualifying in terms of the gap to pull position of the year. Been
:08:26. > :08:31.years in Silverstone in a circuit that normally is not our preferred
:08:31. > :08:35.circuit, with these high-speed corner, being one turns off the
:08:35. > :08:42.poll is good news for us. All the new parts we brought here are
:08:42. > :08:49.working well and I'm pleased with the qualifying. But the job is
:08:49. > :08:55.tomorrow when the points are given. So hopefully tomorrow we can put on
:08:55. > :09:05.some pressure to be on the pole at the end. How big a distraction as
:09:05. > :09:15.
:09:15. > :09:19.the row over each -- the diffuser been? It is not new. Every year we
:09:20. > :09:26.have something new to talk about. This last few weeks it has been
:09:26. > :09:32.about this. Let us hope everyone can find common ground. It is
:09:33. > :09:38.incredibly boring also for the fans. So let us get on with the racing
:09:38. > :09:48.and keep the rules as simple as possible. But tomorrow we are in
:09:48. > :09:53.great shape. How much would Mark Webber love to
:09:53. > :10:02.pick up a win just as he managed to do right here 12 months ago?
:10:02. > :10:10.Congratulations to him, he is on pole. Just behind them, Ferrari are
:10:10. > :10:15.pushing them hard. Jensen Button putting it a good lap for 5th. And
:10:15. > :10:21.Paul di Resta or, congratulations to him, second highest qualifying
:10:21. > :10:31.British driver here today. Maldonado and Kobayashi will be
:10:31. > :10:32.
:10:32. > :10:37.quite happy with their respective efforts today. And Lewis Hamilton
:10:37. > :10:46.starts tents on the grid for this race. A difficult weekend for him
:10:47. > :10:53.so far. Michael Schumacher starts the 13th, a disappointing day for
:10:53. > :11:03.him today. And Rubens Barrichello will also be pretty fed up, out
:11:03. > :11:04.
:11:04. > :11:12.will also be pretty fed up, out qualified by his team mate. And
:11:12. > :11:17.towards the back we have Timo Glock. And finishing off, Liuzzi and
:11:17. > :11:21.Daniele Ricciardo the made his debut here as a Formula 1 driver.
:11:21. > :11:24.Weakened walkabout Daniel also. Day that has been involved with his
:11:24. > :11:31.that has been involved with his career. But first we must talk
:11:31. > :11:36.about McLaren. This new ruling about exhaust gases, that has done
:11:36. > :11:41.something to beat McLaren that is not good for event. Well before
:11:41. > :11:44.qualifying it was clear that Martin Whitmarsh was unhappy that the
:11:44. > :11:54.teams do not have the chance to optimise their cars before going
:11:54. > :12:00.out in qualifying. It just does not seem to have enabled the drivers to
:12:00. > :12:08.have that confidence they need. Qualifying is normally somewhere
:12:08. > :12:17.Lewis Hamilton excels. But just listen to him through this section.
:12:17. > :12:21.That was a lot of overs steering and then a locked up. He's not even
:12:21. > :12:25.halfway into the lap and has already dropped away in that
:12:25. > :12:35.section. I think his frustration levels would be growing all the
:12:35. > :12:36.
:12:37. > :12:44.time. Just fighting the carp all the way round the lap. So big
:12:44. > :12:49.losses for McLaren are due to that regulation change. They have
:12:49. > :12:55.totally changed the card just moments before qualifying. You
:12:55. > :13:01.cannot judge anything. That is right and arguably it is dangers to
:13:01. > :13:06.put drivers in the situation wear regulation change puts them in a
:13:06. > :13:11.situation where they simply do not know the vehicle they are driving.
:13:11. > :13:17.I'm virtually lost for words. In that interview Mark Webber said it
:13:17. > :13:21.was nonsense. The people do not understand it, the engineers do not
:13:22. > :13:27.understand it and as a driver, he does not understand it. So how can
:13:27. > :13:31.you ask them to drive a car when they do not know what they're being
:13:31. > :13:36.given. There is an element of danger there and why did they play
:13:36. > :13:42.this out on the morning of the official qualifying? It leaves me
:13:42. > :13:46.dumbfounded. That was Lewis Hamilton's fastest lap today, two
:13:46. > :13:54.seconds off the pace. Do you almost feel sorry for McLaren here? The
:13:54. > :13:59.last thing anyone needed was to give Red Bull a bit of a toe up.
:13:59. > :14:07.And that is during a race weekend, on the morning of qualifying.
:14:07. > :14:13.would not single out any one team. Martin Whitmarsh was Ciara, some
:14:13. > :14:18.people may have a small advantage. But I think that any disruption -
:14:18. > :14:22.McLaren put more into their package, their centre and are sold Finaghy
:14:22. > :14:32.about detail - they will have been the people who'll suffer the most
:14:32. > :14:39.
:14:39. > :14:42.and today just endorsed that. A frustrating day, I would say.
:14:42. > :14:47.the fans here are fantastic, the support we have had already from
:14:47. > :14:53.Thursday onwards has been magnificent. I hope that tomorrow,
:14:53. > :14:57.we can do something special for them. If we can rely on someone to
:14:57. > :15:03.come blasting through the field, it is normally you. From tenth
:15:03. > :15:07.tomorrow, how do you think you will set up? I have probably got a
:15:07. > :15:09.couple of people in front of me which I might be quicker than, but
:15:09. > :15:17.overtaking here is very difficult, but we can still have an exciting
:15:18. > :15:22.race. It is not a fantastic weekend, but I'm still quite happy because
:15:22. > :15:28.of the support we have here. have to take our hats off to Lewis
:15:28. > :15:32.there, trying to keep a smile on his face. We could not really get
:15:32. > :15:36.into it there, precisely what's going on with the car, but you can
:15:36. > :15:40.understand how difficult it is for a driver at their home race just
:15:40. > :15:44.not to know the vehicle that they're racing in. The frustration
:15:44. > :15:47.of not performing well at your home Grand Prix, I remember qualifying
:15:47. > :15:51.fourth at his Grand Prix, but knowing that it meant that I would
:15:51. > :15:56.lose the opportunity to seriously challenge for victory, and going
:15:56. > :15:58.back to the motor home, it was frustration, crying, because you
:15:58. > :16:03.really want to deliver a great performance for your home Grand
:16:03. > :16:08.Prix. Hats off to Lewis, he has come out and faced the media, Lee
:16:08. > :16:12.is just one of the number of people he has to speak to. Interestingly,
:16:12. > :16:20.we had Anthony Hamilton, his father, gleaming town at Force India,
:16:20. > :16:26.because he manages Paul di Resta. What about that?! Anthony Hamilton,
:16:26. > :16:31.for me, has devoted the next part of his life on the carrier path of
:16:31. > :16:35.Paul di Resta. If you look at a mirror image of what he did for
:16:35. > :16:45.Lewis, you would have to say, good on Paul di Resta, he's in good
:16:45. > :16:45.
:16:45. > :16:50.hands. It is starting to rain once again. While we try and keep dry if
:16:50. > :17:00.we can, let's here from Jenson Button, who starts fifth on the
:17:00. > :17:05.
:17:05. > :17:09.Jenson, not too many smiles from the McLaren boys today - how are
:17:09. > :17:13.you feeling? I don't think the position is too bad, but the pace
:17:13. > :17:20.is. It was not a perfect lap, I did not have very good balance. But
:17:20. > :17:24.still, just a couple of tenths, that was about it. I do not know
:17:24. > :17:28.where our place has gone. I can have a guess. But we have a car
:17:28. > :17:32.which is suddenly 1.3 seconds slower than a Ferrari. I do not
:17:32. > :17:40.know the full details of the regulation change, but I'm
:17:40. > :17:44.surprised to see where we are. It has been all day, not just Q3. In a
:17:44. > :17:48.couple of hours, we will be looking at the positive, hoping to put on a
:17:48. > :17:51.great show for the British fans. We have got three British drivers in
:17:52. > :17:57.the top 10, not where we would want them, but we want to put on a great
:17:57. > :18:01.show. It is looking difficult with a one. Five-second deficit at the
:18:01. > :18:05.moment, but that is what it is. Christian Horner was saying that he
:18:06. > :18:10.thought the Red Bull would be very affected by these changes, but it
:18:10. > :18:19.does not necessarily look that way. Do you feel it has been a
:18:19. > :18:23.distraction for you guys? It is everyone, the mechanics, the
:18:23. > :18:31.engineers, the drivers, it has been a massive destruction that he
:18:31. > :18:34.should not be any worse for us than it is for the other guys. Saying
:18:34. > :18:37.the Red Bull will be massively affected, I do not know any more
:18:37. > :18:42.who's really telling the truth. It is a bit frustrating. Hopefully we
:18:42. > :18:46.can get our act together in time for tomorrow and oh mack competitor.
:18:46. > :18:56.I have never been on the podium before here. I would love to get up
:18:56. > :18:59.
:18:59. > :19:08.No doubt the fans were hoping for some more from McLaren today. Nigel
:19:08. > :19:12.Mansell, the FIA's driver representative, joins us now. And
:19:12. > :19:17.storm clouds brewing over Formula 1 is what we were discussing. I know
:19:17. > :19:22.you cannot talk specifics, but maybe you can tell us how involved
:19:23. > :19:26.the stewards have been in what's been going on. We are aware of what
:19:26. > :19:30.is going on. The nice thing going forward is that everyone is going
:19:30. > :19:34.to get together and agree something going forward. Arguably, that
:19:34. > :19:38.should have been done before this weekend. But the great thing is
:19:38. > :19:41.that everyone's going to capitulate hopefully at some time in the near
:19:41. > :19:45.future. But we have got the most marvellous weekend, British Grand
:19:45. > :19:50.Prix, it is going to be a fantastic event, and the weather is going to
:19:50. > :19:53.throw something at us as well. seem pretty child about the
:19:53. > :20:00.controversy surrounding the changes... I have been docking a
:20:00. > :20:04.lot. Was there ever anything like this in your career? Yes,
:20:04. > :20:08.absolutely. When I drove for the late, great Colin Chapman, we had a
:20:08. > :20:13.car coming here, and it was disqualified before the race began,
:20:14. > :20:19.if you remember, in 1988. So there has been things in the past.
:20:19. > :20:23.Hopefully everything will get sorted out very quickly. We do not
:20:23. > :20:28.want to be critical of the people, but nevertheless, doing this the
:20:29. > :20:32.way it has been done, you as a driver, now in the FIA, being one
:20:32. > :20:37.of the stewards, it is totally unsavoury, it is not fair on the
:20:37. > :20:41.public... As we said earlier, we cannot pass any comment. The main
:20:41. > :20:46.thing is that no-one realises the complexities of everything going
:20:46. > :20:51.forward here. It will unravel and unfold and people will realise just
:20:51. > :20:55.how incredible the situation is. I will give you one specific thing.
:20:55. > :21:00.Obviously, NASA has developed so incredible carbon fibre, some teams
:21:00. > :21:04.have got hold of it and done some very special things with it.
:21:04. > :21:08.were obviously at the forefront of mobilising people power around
:21:08. > :21:13.Silverstone - can you recall any frustrating British Grand Prix as
:21:13. > :21:16.well so we can try and explain the frustration for Jenson and Lewis?
:21:16. > :21:20.The biggest frustration for both of them will be that their car at the
:21:20. > :21:24.moment is not quick enough for them. It is like anything in life, you
:21:24. > :21:28.have to work harder. When it is not quite there, you're frustrated
:21:28. > :21:34.because you cannot compete. At the moment, no question, some teams are
:21:34. > :21:37.a bit quicker than others. In case you were wondering why Nigel does
:21:38. > :21:42.not have an umbrella, I can tell you that he was offered, and
:21:42. > :21:49.decided not to take one, because Nigel drove when men were men, and
:21:49. > :21:59.you had to do audacious things. Let's have a little look at one of
:21:59. > :22:01.
:22:01. > :22:05.Nigel's greatest ever races, from MURRAY WALKER: Nigel Mansell,
:22:06. > :22:09.winning the British Grand Prix for the second year in succession. Out
:22:09. > :22:15.comes the chequered flag. Nigel Mansell has won the British Grand
:22:16. > :22:20.Prix! Nelson Piquet finishes in second place. And the British crowd
:22:20. > :22:28.breaks ranks. Nigel is not going to be allowed to get back to his pit.
:22:28. > :22:33.Amazing! Nigel just said to me, you only showed that finish, you did
:22:33. > :22:42.not show the brilliant overtake that I did! Even in this kind of
:22:42. > :22:46.weather, that's enough to make you feel like you're be enshrined on.
:22:46. > :22:53.And there's a Ferrari umbrella behind you. Wasn't it marvellous,
:22:53. > :23:01.Alonso, he did not have the most fantastic practice, but he did
:23:01. > :23:05.really well to get really close to the Red Bill Pullman. Surely you
:23:05. > :23:13.have circumvented the rules to give them that advantage, Nigel. I have
:23:13. > :23:18.no idea what you're on about. thanks for trying to be as
:23:18. > :23:22.controversial as ever. David, for being as professional as ever, and
:23:22. > :23:32.you being the most fantastic referee. It is exhausting, that
:23:32. > :23:33.
:23:33. > :23:38.someone's got to do it. Nigel, seriously impressed by Fernando
:23:38. > :23:45.Alonso today. Yes, it is true, Ferrari have done brilliantly, but
:23:45. > :23:51.the issue is that they have been helped by the situation. Give us
:23:51. > :23:54.your thoughts, David. commitment is unquestioned. He was
:23:54. > :24:00.sitting in that press conference looking incredibly satisfied with
:24:00. > :24:04.the fact that, as Nigel mentioned, he's just over a tenth off the pole
:24:04. > :24:08.position. He knows this Ferrari is benefiting from the rule changes,
:24:08. > :24:12.and that is allowing him to get ever closer to claiming his first
:24:12. > :24:17.victory of the season. I would just like to make a point, in case
:24:17. > :24:20.anybody thinks we're trying to beat up on Ferrari - Ferrari's
:24:20. > :24:24.interpretation of the rule is such that they say they are totally
:24:24. > :24:29.vindicated because they complied with the rule. Maybe their argument
:24:29. > :24:33.is, we have been the victim in the past, and we are only now back in
:24:33. > :24:39.our white for position. So maybe we shouldn't beat up on Ferrari too
:24:40. > :24:45.much. We can hear from the Ferrari Team Principal danger. So, we have
:24:45. > :24:50.not spoken much to Ferrari this weekend. Tell us how qualifying
:24:50. > :24:55.went. I think it was quite good. It is a shame that with this kind of
:24:55. > :25:03.weather, we could not exploit the perfect lap, but that's for
:25:03. > :25:06.everyone. At least we have made a step forward in qualifying. Let's
:25:06. > :25:11.see if we can have the same thing tomorrow, which is the most
:25:11. > :25:16.important thing. Why do you think you have made a step forward?
:25:16. > :25:25.have worked a lot. Everything, development, new bits, and tried to
:25:25. > :25:31.catch up. This is what we have to do. Tomorrow will be the outcome,
:25:31. > :25:34.that is the most important thing. And how have you been affected by
:25:34. > :25:40.the whole diffuser thing? I think everyone has been affected, no
:25:40. > :25:45.doubt. I do not want to follow these polemics, it is not very good.
:25:45. > :25:49.We need to rely on the FIA. We totally rely on them, and that's
:25:49. > :25:53.the way it is. It has not been good for Ferrari, as some people are
:25:53. > :26:00.saying? People can say what they want, I do not care about it. It is
:26:00. > :26:06.affecting everyone. That's what the principle of the whole thing is all
:26:06. > :26:16.about, that's the way it is. Those are the thoughts of the Team
:26:16. > :26:17.
:26:17. > :26:25.Principal from Ferrari. We have decided to come inside. Let's here
:26:25. > :26:29.from Felipe Massa a after today's qualifying session. Congratulations,
:26:29. > :26:34.fourth place start for tomorrow, but it was quite a confusing,
:26:35. > :26:41.frustrating qualifying, I would imagine, with the weather? Yes, it
:26:41. > :26:48.was difficult. We did not know which tyres to use. But anyway, I
:26:48. > :26:52.did not have a great use -- I did not have a great lap in Q3. I
:26:52. > :26:58.thought I would improve the lot on the second set of tyres, but I was
:26:58. > :27:06.not able to, because it was raining. By not having a great lap, starting
:27:06. > :27:10.fourth is not so bad. I will try to be even stronger tomorrow. Felipe
:27:10. > :27:15.Massa said he did not have a great lap in the final part of qualifying
:27:16. > :27:20.- talk us through it, David, he should be pretty happy, I guess?
:27:20. > :27:30.He's close, but you could hear him as he went through Copse corner, he
:27:30. > :27:30.
:27:30. > :27:36.just had that hesitation through the apex. Again, a bit of
:27:36. > :27:39.hesitation as he comes down towards turn one. He will know from his
:27:39. > :27:43.engineer, the lap term he was targeting, and he will be able to
:27:43. > :27:48.work out how much she was losing. It looks to me like he has got a
:27:48. > :27:54.lot of understeer on that car. could be a real dark horse for the
:27:54. > :27:58.race tomorrow. If you recall Q2, he was right there. He has embraced
:27:58. > :28:04.the rule changes, and I think he's having a bit of a rebirth here.
:28:04. > :28:08.Let's hope for his sake that that is the case. Nigel could not tell
:28:08. > :28:13.us too much, obviously, but he knows what has been going on. Based
:28:13. > :28:23.on what you both know about the sport, and you have been through
:28:23. > :28:24.
:28:24. > :28:30.situations like this, just explain what you think might happen next.
:28:30. > :28:34.Where will this go? It will be very clear. All the team principals will
:28:34. > :28:38.come together, Bernie Ecclestone will lock everyone in a room, the
:28:38. > :28:43.FIA will be there, Charlie will be there, and they will come up with a
:28:43. > :28:47.proper solution. It is a just a shame for everybody that we're in
:28:47. > :28:53.this no go area, where nobody actually knows what is likely to
:28:53. > :28:58.happen, or where in fact the rules have got to at this stage. I agree,
:28:58. > :29:01.this needs to be sorted out. The last thing the FA needs his any
:29:01. > :29:04.team going into the Grand Prix tomorrow with the possibility to
:29:04. > :29:08.protest afterwards. And of course the teams would have to do that if
:29:08. > :29:17.they felt they had been disadvantaged in any way. So they
:29:17. > :29:22.have got to thrash this out this evening. So there could be changes
:29:22. > :29:28.to the cars before tomorrow? Absolutely, because otherwise, they
:29:28. > :29:31.could protest against the result. That is the threat. I think this
:29:31. > :29:41.was a compromise today, to get through qualifying, and they will
:29:41. > :29:43.
:29:43. > :29:49.need to find something more solid I think David, if he had gone to
:29:49. > :29:52.the commentary box, we heard what Christian had to say. The rules for
:29:52. > :30:02.the race is going forward are actually agreed. It is this one
:30:02. > :30:03.
:30:03. > :30:07.which is at issue. You made the point that it is potentially
:30:07. > :30:13.dangerous and I agree with that. To send a driver out was no real
:30:13. > :30:21.knowledge of what he is actually driving. As far as the Gulf is
:30:22. > :30:27.concerned, the weather is too bad and there is no play today. That
:30:27. > :30:35.will be happening tomorrow. But we are staying on air until the top of
:30:35. > :30:45.the hour. Let as go on board now with Michael Schumacher. He did not
:30:45. > :30:47.
:30:47. > :30:54.make it through to the final part of qualifying. Clearly the car has
:30:54. > :30:59.reasonable pace. He's a League Two and tenths away from the 5th
:30:59. > :31:09.position time in that particular section of qualifying. It would
:31:09. > :31:14.
:31:14. > :31:19.only have taken a little and better run on his lap. That is an easy
:31:19. > :31:25.thing to find around this track. How does Michael see his race
:31:25. > :31:31.tomorrow? Michael, you must be frustrated, so close to getting
:31:31. > :31:37.into that top 10? I am not too frustrated. We simply went out too
:31:37. > :31:42.early. We put in two laps on the tyres and they were not ready any
:31:42. > :31:48.more by the time the lap was completely dry. We have to live
:31:48. > :31:55.with that. We will see what we can do with some fresher tyres compared
:31:55. > :32:03.to the others. Although I do not wish to use them tomorrow if I
:32:03. > :32:13.don't have to and just use the intermediates is possible.
:32:13. > :32:14.
:32:14. > :32:24.Norman is in charge of the team. Not great for Michael today. What
:32:24. > :32:31.
:32:31. > :32:34.happened? It was very close. I think that was mentioned already. I
:32:34. > :32:40.think two tenths quicker and he would have been in the middle of
:32:40. > :32:46.the pick. So he just missed it. There has been a lot of talk about
:32:46. > :32:53.which particular team and engine is benefited by the changes to the
:32:53. > :32:58.regulations. What do you think? think there are go lot of noises
:32:58. > :33:06.and a lot of lobbying going on. But at the end of today it did not
:33:06. > :33:14.change a lot. I think it is not a big change. Maybe Ferrari was
:33:14. > :33:23.helped a little bit. But not in an unfair way. It looks like McLaren
:33:23. > :33:33.were not so strong here. Lewis Hamilton is behind us and we did
:33:33. > :33:35.
:33:35. > :33:42.not have the perfect qualifying. from the manufacturer's point of
:33:42. > :33:48.view you are pretty chilled about eight? I am along time in business
:33:48. > :33:54.and being frustrated to never helps. You need to put the facts on the
:33:54. > :34:00.table. If you change rules during the course of the season, it is
:34:00. > :34:07.unfortunate. Do you expect there to be another ruling coming through
:34:07. > :34:13.over the course of this weekend? do not think there will be further
:34:13. > :34:21.changes this week. But I'm sure people will sit down and modify it
:34:21. > :34:25.for the future. Could you confirm that the specification for Valencia
:34:25. > :34:34.will be for the remainder of the season, not on what we have got
:34:34. > :34:38.here? And cannot confirm that. That is one of the discussion points. It
:34:38. > :34:48.was changed already during first practice and I think we will stick
:34:48. > :34:54.with what we have over the course of the week. We will head back
:34:54. > :34:58.outside because apparently it has stopped raining. Let's hear from
:34:58. > :35:02.Fernando Alonso who had a great session today and start spared on
:35:02. > :35:09.the grid. You must be pleased with Europe pays out there today could
:35:09. > :35:14.smack definitely. It was a good qualifying for asked. Sometimes you
:35:14. > :35:22.bring parts to the Grand Prix and some of them work OK, some of them
:35:22. > :35:25.need more time. But here everything was running well and we have found
:35:25. > :35:31.ourselves one-tenth of the poll in Silverstone which normally is a
:35:31. > :35:36.circuit we struggle with an little more. But tomorrow it is the time
:35:36. > :35:41.to deliver because the points are given. What about the regulation
:35:41. > :35:47.discussions this weekend, how does that affect Ferrari? My thoughts
:35:47. > :35:53.are simple. It is quite boring I think for the fans first of all and
:35:53. > :35:58.also for the people in the paddock. We just concentrate on the
:35:58. > :36:05.performance of the park and there's a lot of talk and a lot of meetings.
:36:05. > :36:14.We cannot be distracted by this. We need to make sure we give 100% on
:36:15. > :36:23.the track. That is also what the fans want. And for the roles here,
:36:23. > :36:28.as I said, we just adapt to whatever rules are written.
:36:28. > :36:33.Stability would be welcome, to have less confusion for the fans. I
:36:33. > :36:39.think we need to think about the fans and have less talk about
:36:39. > :36:44.things that happen on the circuit. The British weather is a little
:36:44. > :36:52.confused today. What do you hope for tomorrow? I'm hoping for at dry
:36:52. > :36:59.a race. A simple race with the right conditions I think would be
:36:59. > :37:05.better for asked to check if we can get close to Red Bull. And also for
:37:05. > :37:11.the fans I think they have got wet all ready for today's on the
:37:11. > :37:16.Grandstand. Sleeping on the wet grass. So hopefully tomorrow is at
:37:16. > :37:24.sunny day. Very nice of him to think of the
:37:24. > :37:29.fans. Let's take a walk down towards Red Bull and see what the
:37:29. > :37:33.atmosphere is like down there. Ferrari will be delighted about
:37:33. > :37:38.this weekend performance. Filipe Massa at once again slightly behind
:37:38. > :37:43.his team-mate. But for author on the grid, there is the opportunity
:37:43. > :37:47.for him to do something from that. Most people think he is under
:37:48. > :37:54.pressure and she probably is because Ferrari have an end game,
:37:54. > :38:00.they want to see someone of relief stroll alongside Alonso. -- someone
:38:00. > :38:06.really strong. But I think Massa is probably coming back to a comfort
:38:06. > :38:16.zone and I think he will just get on with it. I think they have found
:38:16. > :38:17.
:38:17. > :38:21.a way now of beating McLaren. Formula 1 is a development race. It
:38:21. > :38:27.is about how quickly you can bring in the developments during the
:38:27. > :38:33.course of the season. It is about getting regulations that suit your
:38:33. > :38:39.car and your development and it does seem like Ferrari, they do
:38:39. > :38:43.seem to be the team that are slowly but surely putting themselves
:38:43. > :38:52.forward to be in no position to beat Red Bull. If anyone was to
:38:52. > :38:57.come close to catching Red Bull on each occasion it has been McLaren.
:38:57. > :39:02.You have to say, who can actually deliver the maximum number of
:39:02. > :39:08.points? It still is McLaren. But today on the evidence we have seen,
:39:08. > :39:14.bear in the doldrums. Red Bull are still ahead of Ferrari. Sebastian
:39:14. > :39:19.Vettel still ahead. Let's find out his thoughts after qualifying today.
:39:19. > :39:29.A slightly different view then you're used to commit you start
:39:29. > :39:30.
:39:30. > :39:34.second tomorrow. I can see the car next to me, and market did a good
:39:34. > :39:41.job in qualifying and was very close. Shame I did not get the
:39:41. > :39:46.second run. I think it is the same sort all of us except Mark Webber
:39:46. > :39:53.in that situation, wishing for the second run to be a little better.
:39:53. > :39:59.It was tricky with the rain. It seems this weekend is difficult to
:39:59. > :40:04.predict. We get the forecast for no rain and then it was raining and
:40:04. > :40:10.the other way round. They said that tomorrow should be dry. What would
:40:10. > :40:18.you prefer? To be honest, I do not care as long as I have the right
:40:18. > :40:24.set of tyres. I think that rain is possible. We will see. Have you
:40:24. > :40:32.been distracted by this ongoing conversation about the regulation
:40:32. > :40:42.changes? D'you feel the car has been affected? I tried not to get
:40:42. > :40:42.
:40:42. > :40:49.affected because it is not my business at the end of the day. It
:40:49. > :40:54.is in their hands. That is the real shame in hindsight. For people to
:40:54. > :41:00.understand what really is going on and took is affected and foot is
:41:00. > :41:06.not. I think the best is always to show up on the track where you are.
:41:06. > :41:12.McLaren may be did not have the smoothest qualifying. It is early
:41:12. > :41:17.to say we lost, Ferrari did not and McLaren lost even more. We will see
:41:17. > :41:22.tomorrow. All of these teams I mentioned, will be competitive
:41:22. > :41:29.tomorrow. Up and then the tyres will play a much bigger role than
:41:29. > :41:33.the exhausts. We will find out what effect the
:41:33. > :41:40.weather will have on the race tomorrow. Sebastian Vettel just
:41:40. > :41:44.thinking about how to get a win tomorrow. Ted Kravitz is always
:41:44. > :41:50.there asking questions. He spoke to Martin Whitmarsh and the news we
:41:50. > :41:55.think is that despite the changes this weekend, slowing down some
:41:55. > :42:01.teams, issuing new directives, after this weekend the sport will
:42:01. > :42:07.revert back to the same spec that we saw in Valencia. Which means
:42:07. > :42:14.that this was a lot of hot air for one raise only. I do not want to
:42:14. > :42:23.say aye told you so. But what has happened today has brought on this
:42:23. > :42:27.is their intention, this looks shambolic and nobody wants that. It
:42:27. > :42:32.is the right thing to do to go back to where we wear for the remainder
:42:32. > :42:38.of the season. You cannot make will changes in the middle of the season
:42:38. > :42:44.unless they are for safety reasons. It is also confusing. I do not
:42:44. > :42:51.think I have got my head round it completely. It does seem sensible
:42:51. > :42:57.to allow people to go down the path they had spent the year developing.
:42:57. > :43:07.And then it could get out what at the end of the season if necessary.
:43:07. > :43:11.
:43:11. > :43:16.-- outlawed. Role of the teams have their motor homes went in Europe.
:43:16. > :43:22.One of the biggest belongs to Red Bull. Let us just look in it and
:43:22. > :43:28.see what the atmosphere is like. This is where the drivers spend
:43:28. > :43:37.most of their weekend. Christian Horan at their chatting to his wife
:43:37. > :43:46.and a few friends. Maybe that is the way to get things resolved! Do
:43:46. > :43:54.you want to go over and have a word with Christian? See if he will talk
:43:54. > :43:59.to us. The great British public would like to speak to you. You
:43:59. > :44:05.looked so grim before the start of qualifying. First and second on the
:44:05. > :44:12.grid must have changed that perspective. Break into a smile for
:44:12. > :44:16.us! It has been a busy day to day. It was nice to get into the grand
:44:16. > :44:22.prix weekend. We have just heard that this directive is going to
:44:22. > :44:26.disappear and the cars will return to their speck in Valencia. If so,
:44:26. > :44:36.what a strange and disappointing thing to happen this weekend to
:44:36. > :44:37.
:44:37. > :44:40.overshadow what was an interesting It is a very difficult and
:44:40. > :44:44.technical subject. Putting yourself in Charlie Whiting's shoes, it is
:44:44. > :44:51.very difficult for him to be able to judge between one engine and the
:44:51. > :44:54.other. Actually, the solution that he suggested today I think is a
:44:54. > :44:58.compromise which it is difficult for the teams to reject. We all ran
:44:58. > :45:03.reliably in Valencia, and it seems to be the most logical thing, to go
:45:03. > :45:08.back to those settings. You must have to spare a thought for the FIA,
:45:08. > :45:17.though, it will sometimes get to a point where they are not happy,
:45:17. > :45:22.they need to be able to do something. What is the way going
:45:22. > :45:26.forward to make sure this doesn't happen again? The biggest problem
:45:26. > :45:31.with his who are, effectively, you're looking at a rule change
:45:31. > :45:38.mid-season. They have managed to get themselves into a bit of a
:45:38. > :45:42.pickle over this. It is such a complicated subject. With where the
:45:42. > :45:47.exhausts are on these cars, it has a huge knock-on effect. Effectively,
:45:47. > :45:52.we're running here in a mode which is not optimised to our gearshift
:45:52. > :45:56.strategy, to our reliability. And the additional benefits which you
:45:56. > :46:03.see from the exhaust blowing. So we have accepted that for this weekend,
:46:03. > :46:08.on the basis that it will be addressed in time for the next race.
:46:08. > :46:13.The good news about this weekend is because Mark Webber is on pole
:46:13. > :46:18.position for this race, and we can hear from him now.
:46:18. > :46:23.This circuit seems to like you and you seem to like it very much.
:46:23. > :46:26.it has been good to me in the past. Hopefully it can be good to me
:46:26. > :46:29.again in the next 24 hours. I'm looking forward to challenging very
:46:29. > :46:39.hard for the victory tomorrow. It will be an interesting race between
:46:39. > :46:40.
:46:40. > :46:45.the three of us, I think. You never know, Felipe might be there as well,
:46:45. > :46:51.it looks like the first two rose have a bit of a gap. Looking
:46:51. > :46:57.forward to it. Tell us about the controversy about the regulations
:46:57. > :47:02.and things - has it affected your car? The team has done a very good
:47:02. > :47:07.job. We have let the people that control the performance on the
:47:07. > :47:12.track focus on that. There has been a lot of talk, and hot and cold air
:47:12. > :47:17.going on, in terms of who is right and wrong, ambiguity, what is
:47:17. > :47:23.right? The most important thing is that we got it sorted out very
:47:23. > :47:30.quickly. We try to understand it as drivers, the people at home,
:47:30. > :47:37.obviously, 90% of them will not have much idea what it is all about.
:47:37. > :47:41.Let's try and get on with the racing now. You have had one pole
:47:41. > :47:48.position this season, but you did not convert it - how can you do
:47:48. > :47:52.that tomorrow? A good start would be nice, obviously. That is always
:47:52. > :47:57.beneficial. And then put yourself in a position to try to control the
:47:57. > :48:01.race. Obviously, you never know how easy that will be. But in the past,
:48:01. > :48:04.sometimes it has been quite straightforward. This year, yet not
:48:04. > :48:13.yet, for me, but I'm looking forward to giving it everything
:48:13. > :48:22.tomorrow. A new pit straight, new start line, it is going to be
:48:22. > :48:27.interesting at the start tomorrow. Yes, it is very open at turn one
:48:27. > :48:30.and turn two. The action will be taking place at turn three. Mark
:48:30. > :48:36.Webber loves this place, and I think most of the people here would
:48:36. > :48:40.love to see him win. And if he was wondering, yes, he has managed to
:48:40. > :48:43.get on the television. We're back tomorrow. There's more sport coming
:48:43. > :48:48.tomorrow. There's more sport coming your way this afternoon on the BBC.
:48:48. > :48:52.You can see the women's World Cup quarter-final over on BBC Two. And
:48:52. > :49:01.we're back tomorrow with all the build-up to the 2011 British Grand
:49:02. > :49:07.Prix. What can Mark Webber do? What can Lewis and Jenson do? One thing
:49:07. > :49:17.we are certain of, there will be more wonderful memories to add to
:49:17. > :49:25.
