:01:08. > :01:13.rules in. Gears, de ERS, pit-stop after pit-stop. I'm certainly no

:01:13. > :01:17.rocket scientist. It was enough to make you go loopy. It's the most

:01:17. > :01:23.competitive Gridwood had in years. But there's one name on everybody's

:01:23. > :01:29.lips. Vettel... It's a battle yet again. How are you going to stop

:01:29. > :01:34.him? And who is going to catch him? He's like an unstoppable force.

:01:34. > :01:39.can't be human. But he is human. Blink and you miss him. You can't

:01:39. > :01:45.take your eyes off him. It's predictably unpredictable.

:01:45. > :01:55.wouldn't change anything. It's crazy. Crazy! I can't take it!

:01:55. > :02:04.

:02:04. > :02:08.your mind at the moment. Good evening, thank you very much for

:02:08. > :02:12.being so patient. For the first time in 2011 you have had to wait

:02:12. > :02:15.until 5:00pm for a Grand Prix. Trust me, this circuit, this

:02:15. > :02:19.weather, and the desperate need for the rest of the pack to beat

:02:19. > :02:25.Sebastian Vettel, it will be worth the wait. This is somewhere that

:02:25. > :02:30.both of my partners in crime have had very much success over the

:02:30. > :02:37.years. Just making sure his hair doesn't get wet. For Eddie, this is

:02:37. > :02:42.where it started for him, 20 years ago. He's come through, to finish

:02:42. > :02:47.in fifth position, behind him is his team-mate. Eddie Jordan will be

:02:47. > :02:52.overjoyed. That was way back in 1981. Your first ever points and

:02:52. > :02:56.Formula One. A few years later, your first double podium. Here is a

:02:56. > :03:01.Rubens Barrichello, fist pumping with delight. Happy days for you?

:03:01. > :03:04.Canada has always been very special. It was remarkable. I think the

:03:04. > :03:09.Canadian people liked the Jordan style of things. To get these

:03:09. > :03:15.results here was really very special. How would you surmise the

:03:15. > :03:19.Jordan style of things? A little bit crazy. Very serious under the

:03:19. > :03:23.skin. But on the outside, people thought we were bit rock and roll.

:03:23. > :03:27.That's something we've had to live with. Just like you? Not really,

:03:27. > :03:32.very serious person, alongside David Coulthard, it makes me look

:03:32. > :03:38.even more sensible. Talking of David, his success in Formula One

:03:38. > :03:45.started and ended right here in Canada. David Coulthard, right

:03:45. > :03:50.behind him. He finishes in a fine fifth position. So, those were your

:03:50. > :03:57.first ever points in 1994. 14 years later, your final podium in the

:03:57. > :04:01.sport. Why are you running to the podium? Unfortunately, the parc

:04:01. > :04:04.ferme is at the beginning, the podium is at the end. I was late

:04:04. > :04:10.getting there, I missed the shuttle bus. You don't like running,

:04:10. > :04:15.either? Which of the memories was the fondest for you, first points

:04:15. > :04:19.is very special, 94 was a very sad year for Formula One. Equally, to

:04:19. > :04:24.do that, I know you were very proud? 94, I remember losing

:04:24. > :04:28.feeling in my legs, the physical forces of Grand Prix. I was a young

:04:28. > :04:34.tried and I wasn't well enough prepared. 2008, the last season,

:04:34. > :04:38.special to get on the board. Eddie? I think candidates, it was a huge

:04:38. > :04:41.loss for me when it was dropped from the calendar. You know what

:04:41. > :04:45.has happened? If you look what is going on in the centre of town, the

:04:45. > :04:49.crowd that at year, it has come back much stronger. I see this as

:04:49. > :04:53.being one of the top three races in our whole calendar. I think it's a

:04:53. > :04:58.race that can't be missed. exciting place today when it is dry.

:04:58. > :05:03.When it's wet, it's the end incredible Grand Prix. This guy is

:05:03. > :05:07.getting darker, but still, the crowds are turning up. -- the sky.

:05:08. > :05:12.But it keeps on rolling in Formula One. After today, will be over a

:05:12. > :05:14.third of the way through 2011, a season that will not include the

:05:14. > :05:21.Bahrain Grand Prix after they decided to remove themselves from

:05:21. > :05:25.the calendar. Well, basically, we took the calculated decision that

:05:25. > :05:28.we didn't want to cause any more inconvenience to the teams. The

:05:28. > :05:34.schedules have been set already towards the end of the season.

:05:34. > :05:38.Being a long-term player, on the arena, we decided to withdraw and

:05:38. > :05:43.stop the pursuit of our race for this year, focusing on next year's

:05:44. > :05:48.calendar. OK, let's talk about how this whole thing has been resolved.

:05:48. > :05:52.In the end, it is Bahrain that have made that decision. Formula One

:05:52. > :05:59.hasn't looked particularly clever for the past month? You say that, I

:05:59. > :06:03.think it shows that Formula One is such a global player. The sports

:06:03. > :06:07.transcend the sports pages. You have a number of different factions,

:06:07. > :06:11.number of different endgames in mind, so you are going to get these

:06:11. > :06:15.uncertainties. You have to say it's down to the FIA and the teams,

:06:15. > :06:19.ultimately, to make the final statement as to what they are doing.

:06:19. > :06:23.In this case, they have stepped forward. That's probably the most

:06:23. > :06:27.salient point. We are standing outside Ferrari, their team

:06:27. > :06:31.principal said that the sport mustn't use situations like this

:06:31. > :06:36.for personal gain. What was he talking about? Well, I think what

:06:36. > :06:40.has happened is that sport can often be used as a mechanism,

:06:40. > :06:42.whether it is a battering ram, a feather, it doesn't matter which

:06:42. > :06:46.side of the spectrum you are looking at. The fact is, sport

:06:46. > :06:49.should not be put in a position where it is influencing things that

:06:49. > :06:53.should be politically influenced. I think that the critical thing. Also,

:06:53. > :06:57.what he's talking about is that Formula One has to learn by these

:06:57. > :07:04.mistakes. Communication is vital in every walk of life, whether it be

:07:04. > :07:08.home, business, sport is no exception. We did not get it right

:07:08. > :07:18.with regard to communication. move on to a slightly happier

:07:18. > :07:18.

:07:18. > :07:28.things, this place. This is the Gilles Villeneuve circuit. It means

:07:28. > :07:43.

:07:43. > :07:47.the boys have got a lot to live up is in the house. Let's go for a

:07:47. > :07:51.walk. It's always frantic activity ahead of a race, particularly when

:07:51. > :07:56.it is wet. The director has to decide whether to start with a

:07:56. > :08:04.safety car, that teams need to decide whether to go with wet tyres,

:08:04. > :08:07.intermediate tyres, or if you are brave, slick tyres. You've raised

:08:07. > :08:12.in Monaco in the wet, what's it like when the rain starts coming

:08:12. > :08:15.down on these temporary tracks? It's a lot more comfortable in a

:08:15. > :08:19.racing car than our current walk. The umbrella is not big enough. Why

:08:19. > :08:22.are we not standing under the cover of one of the garages? We are

:08:22. > :08:25.bringing the excitement about the Spear of the rain to the people at

:08:25. > :08:30.home. The only one staying dry is the one in the middle! Thank you

:08:30. > :08:36.for that. It's funny that has we are walking down here, we are

:08:36. > :08:40.walking on bits which are painted. The one thing to any team boss will

:08:40. > :08:47.tell the drivers, stay off the kerbs. If you want to have a steady

:08:47. > :08:53.ride into the barrier, get on to this. You must stay on the black

:08:53. > :08:58.stuff. That's fair, but now they painted with a gripping paint. It's

:08:58. > :09:02.like sand, tight stuff, and its... It still going to be so the

:09:02. > :09:05.question are is not as bad as it could be, but you want to keep it

:09:05. > :09:11.on the black stuff. To keep David happy, we will not walk around too

:09:11. > :09:14.much. We will talk about the drivers' standings. Sebastian

:09:14. > :09:17.Vettel, I guess he opened his curtains this morning and groaned,

:09:17. > :09:23.the rest of the grid had a big smile on their faces closed not I

:09:23. > :09:28.don't think so, funnily enough. Anyone who witnessed what he did a

:09:28. > :09:32.few years ago in the Toro Rosso, they should play that DVD again. He

:09:32. > :09:36.absolutely killed everybody in the race. He's a master, dry and wet. I

:09:36. > :09:42.don't think he woke up to a crisis in his own mind. A fair point, but

:09:42. > :09:46.it makes such a margin for error a little smaller? No question,

:09:46. > :09:50.especially in a track like Montreal. Maybe not the downforce that we

:09:50. > :09:53.have seen in the past, but none the less it is a very high-speed

:09:53. > :09:58.circuit. In the wet, you will be down on those top speed slightly,

:09:58. > :10:01.but still brushing 200 mph. You've got no room for margin. If you're

:10:01. > :10:06.going to a slip and slide, you could find your way into the

:10:06. > :10:10.barrier. We'll keep our eyes on those slipping slides. As far as

:10:10. > :10:15.one man leading, it's not really dented the excitement. It's been an

:10:15. > :10:18.incredible year so far. It's all because Formula One brought in new

:10:18. > :10:22.regulations from lessons that it learned that this race 12 months

:10:22. > :10:26.ago. I think this is brilliant for the racing. This is what we've been

:10:26. > :10:29.looking for this year. We'd been looking for a tyre that is really

:10:29. > :10:34.on the limit. I would say to you, don't be nervous about negative

:10:34. > :10:40.publicity about a tyre that is graining, I would say bring it to

:10:40. > :10:45.every Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton is away first. I'm sure Monaco would

:10:45. > :10:51.be a crazy race. Each lap, the tyres started breaking a little bit

:10:51. > :10:57.more. If it breaks completely, I know that I'm in trouble. The tyres,

:10:57. > :11:01.everybody is on their limit. They are almost committee gather!

:11:01. > :11:06.Formula One should definitely be proud of the race today. We knew it

:11:06. > :11:11.was going to Beith a bit like that. Now we really are getting duty.

:11:11. > :11:18.What a day. Hamilton, he seeing if he can get on the inside of Alonso.

:11:18. > :11:28.He judged that perfectly. He's gone right across the grass. It's one of

:11:28. > :11:30.

:11:30. > :11:35.Canada! Some drive from Lewis Hamilton. That was without a drop

:11:35. > :11:40.of rain. You have to applaud the sport for realising and replicating

:11:40. > :11:43.what happened in Canada last year? We have been blessed. We've had an

:11:43. > :11:48.unbelievably good season last year. No one believed that we could

:11:48. > :11:55.replicate that, as you talk about. But they have. There are a couple

:11:55. > :11:57.of issues, some people saying KERS, some people saying ERS. I think the

:11:57. > :12:01.tyres have been a significant improvement in terms of excitement

:12:01. > :12:08.this year. Yes, we have a battle running away. But nobody is biggie

:12:08. > :12:12.about that, so much excitement. -- nobody is thinking about that.

:12:12. > :12:15.have got Sebastian Vettel running away, but even he is not immune to

:12:15. > :12:19.the odd mistake. He started this weekend in a way he wouldn't have

:12:19. > :12:24.wanted to? This is running into the last chicane. A bit too fast into

:12:24. > :12:32.the turn. The track was still a bit green. He didn't have as much grip

:12:32. > :12:36.as he expected. He'd lost the grip and ran out of road. He lost a very

:12:36. > :12:41.valuable development front wing. But he was able to secure his pole

:12:41. > :12:44.position. Two weeks ago in Monaco we saw a big accident or Sergio

:12:44. > :12:48.Perez. This was coming out of the tunnel, down to the chicane. He was

:12:48. > :12:53.passed fit to race. But he made the decision himself not to take part

:12:53. > :12:59.this weekend. He did. You know, that surprised a lot of people.

:12:59. > :13:02.David and I have discussed this. To get a driver to actually opt not to

:13:02. > :13:06.race is something very, very unusual. For him, in his mind set,

:13:06. > :13:11.I know he's impressed his team by wishing to pull out. He felt he

:13:11. > :13:14.wasn't quite ready. Most drivers would have just gone for it. He's

:13:14. > :13:17.gone up in everybody's estimation because he had the strength of will

:13:17. > :13:21.to actually decide he wasn't ready. I'm sure he will be watching at

:13:21. > :13:24.home. Maybe he will be that he's sitting in a warm living room,

:13:24. > :13:28.rather than getting into a racing car in these conditions. It meant

:13:28. > :13:31.Sauber had a big decision to make. Then it's the only decision I could,

:13:31. > :13:36.to ask a man who drove for them last year, until they ditched him

:13:36. > :13:41.with five races to go, Pedro de la Rosa, to step into their car. He

:13:41. > :13:44.did exactly that. Then this happened. He hasn't driven this car,

:13:44. > :13:48.he hasn't used the KERS button, he hasn't used the drag reduction

:13:48. > :13:52.system. He was actually wearing McLaren overalls for the first part

:13:52. > :13:55.of practice, such a late call-up to getting into the car. It was a

:13:56. > :13:59.disappointment for him, but it meant they had to rebuild the car

:13:59. > :14:03.and work hard to have a car ready for qualifying. I can tell you he

:14:03. > :14:13.was ready for qualifying, along with 23 other cars. Everybody goes

:14:13. > :14:14.

:14:14. > :14:18.out, drives around for an hour and seemed the drivers had figured out

:14:18. > :14:21.how to negotiate the circuit without crashing. The most action

:14:21. > :14:26.was from the Sauber drivers, Pedro de la Rosa's car was surprisingly

:14:26. > :14:31.undamaged by this encounter. His team-mate, Kobayashi, entertained

:14:31. > :14:35.with his usual style. So, while we didn't have any bent metal, we did

:14:35. > :14:39.have broken dreams at McLaren. On paper, the track plays to their

:14:39. > :14:42.strengths. The team does not bring a low drive career win today's race,

:14:42. > :14:47.and that hurt them on long straights. The win that they do

:14:47. > :14:53.have will give them more downforce and better grip in the wet. So,

:14:53. > :14:57.Button and Hamilton could have an ace up their sleeves. I don't think

:14:57. > :15:06.I've driven a car so bard in my life, really. I was on such a

:15:06. > :15:09.ragged edge. I touched the wall at one edge. Using the stream of

:15:09. > :15:15.another car, going behind it but we just got to hope it's much better

:15:15. > :15:20.than qualifying, we are a long way off. Mercedes have the best de ERS

:15:21. > :15:25.in the pit lane. They've used it to good effect. It's been progress

:15:25. > :15:29.this weekend. Qualifying, it's a good place to start. I think

:15:29. > :15:32.they're pretty confident that we can do much better in the race.

:15:32. > :15:37.With McLaren taking themselves out of the picture, it was down to Red

:15:37. > :15:42.Bull and Ferrari. Mark Webber's KERS hybrid system failed, which

:15:42. > :15:45.let Ferrari into record the best qualifying of the season. Felipe

:15:45. > :15:50.Massa and Fernando Alonso were separated by just 18 thousandth of

:15:50. > :15:56.a second. Alonso was on the first front row since this time last year.

:15:56. > :16:00.A genuine surprise in Formula One. Unlike Sebastian Vettel, on pole

:16:00. > :16:04.again and making amends for his crash in practice. It's a mixed-

:16:05. > :16:07.race, there's a bit of weather tomorrow. So, will see tomorrow.

:16:07. > :16:14.think the car is a little bit more competitive than we saw on the

:16:14. > :16:18.other tracks. I hope it carries on like that. If it rains, I think

:16:18. > :16:24.saving the tyres will be a key factor. Also, the wet tyres, they

:16:24. > :16:30.degrade a lot. We need to manage that. But it's not raining, it's a

:16:30. > :16:35.good opportunity. We started good, will see if we can get some kind of

:16:35. > :16:40.start which would be a good thing. The McLarens look very competitive.

:16:40. > :16:46.Probably they had a different approach in qualifying. Setting the

:16:46. > :16:51.car, setting up the car for the race. We'll see. What do we prefer?

:16:51. > :17:01.We don't know. We've had experienced with the Pirelli tyres

:17:01. > :17:05.

:17:05. > :17:11.in particular. It will be new ball Fernando Alonso and then Felipe

:17:11. > :17:16.Massa. Jenson Button is sure he can improve on seventh today. Behind

:17:16. > :17:22.the Renaults that ahead of his team-mate is Scotland's Paul di

:17:22. > :17:29.Resta and Pastor Maldonado. Sauber have Pedro de la Rosa standing in

:17:29. > :17:32.for the injured Sergio Perez. Hispania and Virgin retain their

:17:32. > :17:37.usual positions at the back of the grid.

:17:38. > :17:42.I have decamped to the dry. I'm standing next to Lewis Hamilton's

:17:42. > :17:47.car. Inside here there is a fair bit of head scratching going on.

:17:47. > :17:51.This team have been so fast in the last few years. Have a look in

:17:51. > :17:55.there. That is the cockpit Lewis Hamilton will be sliding into.

:17:55. > :17:59.There is no extra padding in there. There is not a lot of extra comfort

:17:59. > :18:03.that Lewis Hamilton has always done really well here. He picked up his

:18:03. > :18:08.first ever win here in Formula One. He was hoping for a backer --

:18:08. > :18:12.better weekend that this. You have to decide how to change a car ahead

:18:12. > :18:16.of the race. McLaren said they have not got a wet set-up but they are

:18:16. > :18:21.better prepared for the race than qualify and. Talk of changing the

:18:21. > :18:27.car at this late stage, we hear that Toro Rosso had removed Jaime

:18:27. > :18:33.Alguersuari's car from the grid. Explain the thinking behind that.

:18:33. > :18:37.It is a trump card. He was fairly well back. It gives him a huge

:18:37. > :18:43.advantage to change the dampers, the setting and the wing. They will

:18:43. > :18:51.put a lot of padding or tape on the ducks for the brakes. The brakes

:18:51. > :18:55.will be running cooler because of the ambient temperature. Here is a

:18:55. > :18:59.different -- difficult car on bricks. I think they have stolen a

:18:59. > :19:03.march on most people here. I think it could be beneficial to them

:19:03. > :19:09.because under normal conditions there were not looking quick enough

:19:09. > :19:14.to score points. All cars are allowed to change brake tape and

:19:14. > :19:18.put things like that on the car. Set up wise, maybe they will

:19:18. > :19:22.unleash the wonderful set-up we saw with Sebastian Vettel in Monza a

:19:22. > :19:26.couple of years ago and it could be the star of the show. Let's take a

:19:26. > :19:29.walk down to Ferrari because they have done extremely well this

:19:29. > :19:32.weekend. I suppose when you are starting a teeth on the grid and

:19:32. > :19:37.you are under pressure and Jaime Alguersuari is under pressure

:19:37. > :19:42.because he has not had the greatest of season so far, why not take a

:19:42. > :19:48.gamble in these conditions. not? By the nature of wet weather,

:19:48. > :19:53.it becomes more of a lottery. much bigger advantage. When you

:19:53. > :19:57.start in 18th place, in weather like this, the spray is

:19:57. > :20:01.unbelievable. You cannot see your hand in front of you. If you let

:20:01. > :20:05.the traffic go and you are starting knowing there will be four or five

:20:05. > :20:10.cars out in the first corner, that is generally my perception, he gets

:20:10. > :20:15.a chance to come up, either behind the safety car or goes on without

:20:15. > :20:19.this break in his face. I think it is a clever move. If we take a look

:20:19. > :20:23.to our left, have you ever heard of the phrase a hiding to nothing?

:20:23. > :20:30.This man has been here trying to get the water off but as quickly as

:20:30. > :20:35.he picks it up, the rain comes down. They will carry on doing their bit.

:20:35. > :20:42.At least the drivers know they are doing their best to keep it dry. A

:20:42. > :20:45.great performance from Ferrari? it is a remarkable comeback. It

:20:45. > :20:50.shows the strength and depth of the company. Has been a lot of

:20:50. > :20:56.technical changes with the design team. Not harmony behind the

:20:56. > :21:02.factory doors but nonetheless, they are within two-tenths of Sebastian

:21:02. > :21:05.Vettel in qualifying. If you carry on watching, we will show you the

:21:05. > :21:10.pole lap comparison between Sebastian Vettel and Fernando

:21:10. > :21:13.Alonso. There is so little between them, it is unbelievable. But it is

:21:13. > :21:19.Sebastian Vettel who is scaring the rest of the opposition with his

:21:19. > :21:22.pace. And he's scared our very own Lee McKenzie as she got a close-up

:21:22. > :21:30.look as to why he is the man leading the Formula One

:21:30. > :21:36.championship. Sebastian, I am very excited about this. I'm not sure if

:21:36. > :21:42.it is exciting for you for me being a passenger. It depends. It depends

:21:42. > :21:48.on how fast you go! We see you sitting just before you go out and

:21:48. > :21:53.do your laps, eyes closed, visualising the circuit. Please

:21:53. > :22:01.tell me you know this circuit very well. I don't, actually. I'm not

:22:01. > :22:11.100 % on left and right. Let's get it over with a! I am looking

:22:11. > :22:13.

:22:13. > :22:19.forward to it. That is what worries me! I don't get scared. I say,

:22:19. > :22:23.bravely. You seem to have got to grips with this new form of Formula

:22:23. > :22:29.One we have this season. Do you think you are driving better, are

:22:29. > :22:33.you handling the tyres better? Where have you got this edge?

:22:33. > :22:38.don't know. I'm trying to do whatever I have got in my hands,

:22:39. > :22:43.trying to do the best I can. This year with the tyres, it is a

:22:43. > :22:49.different kind of Formula One compared to last year. I love this

:22:49. > :22:53.new set-up. It opens a lot of possibilities for strategy, whether

:22:53. > :23:03.to do a stop more. Be us will be a victory whether he can make his

:23:03. > :23:10.tyres go from apps at 16 to 78. -- laps 16. Lustig, we were looking at

:23:10. > :23:14.one at stop. That was a mistake. We put the hard tyres on. Sometimes to

:23:14. > :23:18.win the race you have to stay out. I tried to do the best with my

:23:18. > :23:25.tyres. Treated them better than some people probably treat their

:23:25. > :23:34.wife. Sebastian Vettel is the master of Monaco. Sideways,

:23:34. > :23:38.sideways! I like that. I'm not to drift champion but I like to drive.

:23:38. > :23:43.It is looking very good for you to retain your championship, are you

:23:43. > :23:49.starting to think of that yet? because it is still very early.

:23:49. > :23:53.is your biggest rival? I think you cannot make them out yet. The

:23:53. > :23:58.McLaren drivers have been very competitive since Australia and I

:23:58. > :24:01.think being they are right behind us but also I think, looking at

:24:01. > :24:10.Ferrari, Fernando was always there, if he has a bad weekend he manages

:24:10. > :24:14.to get away with some points. It will be Lewis, Fernando, Jenson and

:24:14. > :24:22.then we will see where the Mercedes is able and the next couple of

:24:22. > :24:27.races did turn the situation around for themselves and to catch up.

:24:27. > :24:32.watch other forms of motor sport? Yes, most impressive is the rally.

:24:32. > :24:38.It is a bit crazy but it is very nice. I would like to try myself

:24:38. > :24:42.one day. I think Christian would not be too happy. No, danger, wall

:24:42. > :24:47.ahead. The East will be your F1 car, you

:24:47. > :24:54.will jump out and do this. Tell us about this. I heard some people get

:24:54. > :25:04.annoyed by it. He keeps doing that, doesn't he? We also normally see

:25:04. > :25:11.

:25:11. > :25:15.you jumping on your car, Kinky One, he mentions all of his rivals

:25:15. > :25:21.but somehow forget to mention his team-mate Mark Webber as a

:25:22. > :25:25.challenger for the title. Very interesting. I don't think he will

:25:25. > :25:30.be expecting Mark to be watching 10 minutes before the race. I think he

:25:30. > :25:33.knows he has mark under control. From a team point of view, any

:25:33. > :25:37.developments, it is reasonable it will go to the car which has the

:25:37. > :25:42.best chance of winning the championship. But let's be very

:25:42. > :25:45.clear. He used the word we. I think he was being very kind to his team

:25:45. > :25:49.and he was thinking about the opposition. I hope he was thinking

:25:49. > :25:55.about the opposition outside Red Bull. He has been a very good team

:25:55. > :26:00.player. A quick weather update. I spoke to the guys behind us, they

:26:00. > :26:03.said they expect this race to start without any rain falling. However,

:26:03. > :26:07.according to Ron Meadows from Mercedes, this is wet enough for

:26:07. > :26:10.safety car start which means the cars have to have their full wet

:26:10. > :26:15.tyres. It could be a rather dramatic and rather exciting race

:26:15. > :26:19.here this afternoon. It will have to go some to match Le Monde this

:26:19. > :26:23.weekend. We are delighted that Allan McNish was able to get up and

:26:23. > :26:30.walk away after this accident during the race. It was a bad

:26:30. > :26:33.moment for our do. They had two big accidents. It was not all bad news.

:26:33. > :26:37.David, you raced in 1993. We will not mention that you were

:26:37. > :26:41.disqualified but we will talk about a high speed that this circuit.

:26:41. > :26:44.What is it like to race there? have a raised it from my memory

:26:45. > :26:50.because you said I was disqualified! What was it like

:26:50. > :26:55.until then? It is a great challenge. Martin is well placed to talk about

:26:55. > :27:01.that. He has won ultimate -- multiple times. It is a great

:27:01. > :27:08.British following when you go to that event. Arguably, you do more

:27:08. > :27:13.laps and more kilometres during a single event than you do during a

:27:13. > :27:18.entire Grand Prix season. All in all, you would describe it as a

:27:18. > :27:23.good weekend. We are getting close to race time. You can hear the

:27:23. > :27:26.engines are starting to roar. A few moments until the cars make it out

:27:26. > :27:30.to the great. There will be a couple of laps to ascertain how

:27:30. > :27:34.much grip there is. The fans turn out in their droves because leave

:27:34. > :27:38.on not, they do not -- if they do not come to this race in Canada,

:27:38. > :27:48.the nearest race to them is Silverstone, therefore tickets are

:27:48. > :28:08.

:28:08. > :28:13.We had better get out of the pit lane because the cars will start

:28:13. > :28:17.coming down here. We can go to the Mercedes garage and talk about

:28:17. > :28:21.Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg. Rosberg is yet to finish in a

:28:21. > :28:25.higher position and he starts this season. Mercedes need to start

:28:25. > :28:28.working on their race pace, don't they? There are a couple of teams

:28:28. > :28:32.like that you can pull out the stops for qualifying but cannot

:28:32. > :28:37.match it in the race. Mercedes, unfortunately for them that seems

:28:37. > :28:41.to be the sequence. I'm sure they are working hard. It is a

:28:41. > :28:45.transition period in some respects but we used to better performances

:28:45. > :28:49.from Mercedes than what is happening at the moment. Nico

:28:49. > :28:55.Rosberg is doing a good job but nobody knows how good he is because

:28:55. > :29:00.the bent schmuck being Michael Schumacher, Nico is beating him --

:29:00. > :29:04.the benchmark. A pretty good benchmark, the most successful guy

:29:04. > :29:10.in the history of the sport. He is the most successful driver ever

:29:10. > :29:15.hear. Michael has just climbed into his car gearing up for this race.

:29:15. > :29:19.Another win might be difficult for him today. What is it like for him

:29:19. > :29:25.coming to places where you have won time and time again. What was it

:29:25. > :29:29.like, David, when you went to Monaco? Past performance is no

:29:29. > :29:33.guarantee of future success. Michael was known as the rain

:29:33. > :29:37.master when he was in his first career and he will be seeing this

:29:37. > :29:41.as an opportunity. He did a great job in qualifying. He is right

:29:41. > :29:45.there with his younger team-mate, separated by less than half a tenth.

:29:45. > :29:50.He will see this as a great opportunity. He knows how to drive

:29:50. > :29:54.in the wet. There he is, the seventh time for milk one world

:29:54. > :30:04.champion. He took a slightly slower, slightly more leisurely tour around

:30:04. > :30:07.

:30:07. > :30:13.the circuit with our own David Why go to Montreal, a place you

:30:13. > :30:16.know well. I'm a bit concerned by these banners. There is a like this

:30:16. > :30:25.to you, but it looks like your team-mate is a werewolf or

:30:25. > :30:34.something, don't you think? Gosh! Get your feet down! I don't train

:30:34. > :30:40.any more. OK. My God, we are almost off. Can you switch on KERS?

:30:40. > :30:45.this flat out? I think I could run faster! Actually, I'm coming in.

:30:45. > :30:48.Right, we have stopped down here. The apex of turn one. Could you

:30:49. > :30:52.maybe tell us a bit about the challenge of the area of the track?

:30:53. > :30:57.The challenge is to come through here, a key position and keep all

:30:57. > :31:02.of the bits on your car. Whenever you take too much here, it will

:31:02. > :31:05.have an influence over there. If you go too tight and too deep into

:31:05. > :31:12.the corner, the radius you have to take for the second one is losing

:31:12. > :31:18.time. Here we are, working it out turn two. It's known as a traction

:31:18. > :31:25.corner. In particular, at the tyre is going to be... Be careful, stop!

:31:25. > :31:30.He has a conscious, he is worried about the cameraman. Do you mind if

:31:30. > :31:34.I drive a little bit? Yes. You will cope, I think. I'm not going to

:31:34. > :31:38.argue with him. If I was closer to the pits, I might argue. But we are

:31:38. > :31:48.too far away. David Coulthard, he's going to have it out with David

:31:48. > :31:52.

:31:52. > :31:56.do it in English, we are broadcasting to the UK. We are not

:31:56. > :32:06.broadcasting in Germany. I'm doing the trouble, he is doing the

:32:06. > :32:18.

:32:18. > :32:23.steering, what are you doing? fantastic. Is my accent not very

:32:23. > :32:33.good? I only learnt my German from watching DVDs when I was younger.

:32:33. > :32:34.

:32:34. > :32:37.Can I drive? No, still not. Send me those DVDs! Turn 10, probably one

:32:37. > :32:41.of the most famous corners in terms of the image of the crowd. You can

:32:41. > :32:46.feel it, if you pass somebody, you see them getting up and being

:32:46. > :32:54.excited. If you are in the right car and this right situation.

:32:54. > :32:58.drive this last bit? Please. Hooray, I get to drive. This last

:32:58. > :33:03.chicane, they refer to this as the wall of champions. Have you ended

:33:03. > :33:09.up in this wall? I think I created that name. I was the first one

:33:09. > :33:14.there. She Macca, out of the race! They call it the war of champions.

:33:14. > :33:19.That's right. In a really good line, you would be here. That's a bit

:33:19. > :33:26.uncomfortable? Exactly. On the exit, do you have to be brushing the

:33:27. > :33:31.wall? Kind of, yes. How close can we get? You try, C. Is that OK?

:33:31. > :33:41.There is a camera, what we don't have that. I'm not comfortable, can

:33:41. > :33:46.

:33:46. > :33:56.the tyres and stuff? Don't hit them, we don't have that many of them.

:33:56. > :33:58.

:33:58. > :34:04.did get quite close. And you for Schumacher, making his way out, we

:34:04. > :34:11.can say Nick Heidfeld been pushed back into his garage, what would

:34:11. > :34:16.that before? Well, they got time, they can just make sure the break

:34:16. > :34:19.at a temperature is coming in as expected, they know exactly how to

:34:19. > :34:25.get the cooling just right. We saw Nico Rosberg stopping his pit box

:34:25. > :34:29.and put on extra front wings. Well, I say put one in, they may have

:34:29. > :34:33.taken one out. They will put a setting in there, which will have

:34:33. > :34:43.been offset when running, he had denied that and decided he wants to

:34:43. > :34:43.

:34:43. > :34:48.do a bit of a change and go to the around me and I think the clouds

:34:48. > :34:53.had just lifted. Who knows? The gamble that McLaren have made, at

:34:53. > :34:56.this moment in time it looks a good gamble. I think there will be a dry

:34:56. > :35:00.line early in this race. If you are getting a bit blasted out by the

:35:00. > :35:04.sounds of the cars, is because they are trying to do reconnaissance

:35:05. > :35:09.laps. There is no where else we can go, apart from stand quite close

:35:09. > :35:12.and speak loud! We had been told the McLaren cars are heading to the

:35:12. > :35:15.grid on intermediate tyres. What will the drivers have been doing on

:35:15. > :35:19.their first lap, where would they be looking for gripper, what would

:35:19. > :35:22.be the process? The guys that have been here before they know already

:35:22. > :35:26.where to find the grip. In some corners it will be slightly off-

:35:26. > :35:30.line. In other corners, you've got no choice. When you go through a

:35:30. > :35:35.chicane you have to cross over the racing line at a certain point. If

:35:35. > :35:38.you have no experience of the track, you will have to make it up as you

:35:38. > :35:45.go along. In terms of finding the grip of the tyres, they can go

:35:45. > :35:48.round on full wet and then go to the intermediate ones. McLaren,

:35:48. > :35:51.intermediate tyres, we know that because of the blue writing on the

:35:51. > :35:55.side. The drivers will be getting that information. When they get on

:35:55. > :35:59.the grid, this is the real pressure point, when you have deep

:35:59. > :36:07.conversation with the engineers. Presuming it's not a safety car

:36:07. > :36:10.start, of course. We are respecting Michael Schumacher. There he is,

:36:11. > :36:15.right on cue, the champion. There has been very little running for

:36:15. > :36:19.any of these teams on wet tyres or intermediate tyres. We can join

:36:19. > :36:23.Martin on the grid. We've yet to see an incident at the first corner

:36:23. > :36:27.this season. If we are going to see one, today might be that day?

:36:27. > :36:31.Magical mystery Tour, welcome to the grid. They are still practising

:36:31. > :36:36.their starts. They are queuing up in the end of the pit lane. We are

:36:36. > :36:46.not too far away from the pit lane. They are desperately trying to find

:36:46. > :36:47.

:36:47. > :36:55.that by two point. Force India. They are still queuing up to try

:36:55. > :37:00.and find out how they can get the line. Is it intermediate? Always at

:37:00. > :37:03.full wet? On these conditions you usually say intermediate. But it

:37:03. > :37:08.turns out that they can't keep a lot of temperature in those

:37:08. > :37:11.intermediates. It's hard rubber, designed more for slick running.

:37:11. > :37:16.There is a great concern that any one that starts on intermediates

:37:16. > :37:22.might struggle initially. They will go out and try those tires now on

:37:22. > :37:30.the formation laps. We're going to be as welcome as toothache on the

:37:30. > :37:36.grid today. Macau short the Rennies. 24 cars were charged down there, 23

:37:36. > :37:46.because Alguersuari will start from the pit lane. A short run, we can

:37:46. > :37:51.see Barrichello going through to the track. Five minutes ago, if

:37:51. > :38:01.that disappears, we know it will not be a safety car start. If it is,

:38:01. > :38:07.all of the drivers have to start on a full wet tyre. Any news about

:38:07. > :38:11.whether it is a safety car start? No, 10 minutes to decide what we

:38:11. > :38:15.are doing. At the moment it looks better than half-an-hour ago.

:38:15. > :38:21.let it be a safety car start, it spoils the fun. If they say it will

:38:21. > :38:28.be, say, no, I'm not going to do that. We'd sorted that out. Here is

:38:28. > :38:32.the finish line. Sebastian Vettel is not yet on his grid slot. We

:38:32. > :38:39.have the driver's steward here. It can be a busy day in the Stewards

:38:39. > :38:42.of us? It looks like today will be a very busy day. -- steward's

:38:43. > :38:51.Office. Do we wish you were out here in these conditions, driving

:38:51. > :38:56.again? Just wet, yes. But not aquaplaning, too much water, no.

:38:56. > :39:04.Now, I don't think so bad. I agree with you, it doesn't look too bad

:39:04. > :39:09.at all. We have Vettel's cruising up to the great wit the full wet

:39:09. > :39:14.tyres he has decided to try. He's going to have to debrief with his

:39:14. > :39:19.engineers. Apparently he said on the radio that he is going to start

:39:19. > :39:25.on wet tyres. I think somebody has just switched me off behind here.

:39:25. > :39:31.I'll carry on talking, but I can't hear anything any more. Yeah... OK,

:39:31. > :39:36.I'm still broadcasting. That's fine. So, Vettel, he's got his rubber

:39:36. > :39:42.boots that they put on to stop your fireproof boots from getting too

:39:42. > :39:46.damp. Alas the want today is cart water into the car. They are

:39:46. > :39:50.sitting on the top. They are worth about 5, I imagine, but they could

:39:50. > :39:54.be critical and his Motty million pounds approach to try to win a

:39:54. > :39:58.Grand Prix. The man that wants to win the championship puts on his

:39:58. > :40:03.galoshes, standing up in the seat as he heads out through the dry ice.

:40:03. > :40:08.There are still got to cool the car down. There are no fans on these

:40:08. > :40:18.cars that run by themselves. They have Tickle the car. So, Vettel

:40:18. > :40:18.

:40:18. > :40:21.will get out and debrief with his engineer. You have to decide what

:40:21. > :40:27.tyre to start on. He doesn't want this misinformation, this doubt of

:40:27. > :40:31.what to do and how to do it. He is the man that has been fastest, he

:40:31. > :40:34.would like a very straightforward race. I will just hang around a

:40:34. > :40:40.little bit in the hope that we can have a quick word with him. I don't

:40:40. > :40:46.know if he... Tommy, is he up for chatting today? I think so. Tommy

:40:46. > :40:50.is the trainer, a good lad. We'll wait for Sebastian to say what he

:40:50. > :40:54.has got to say to his engineer and then we'll move down the grid. I'm

:40:54. > :40:58.desperate to hear what he thinks of the track conditions. We are in

:40:58. > :41:05.pole position here. I'm getting kicked from behind by Spanish TV,

:41:05. > :41:09.as normal. I don't want to interrupt him, that would not be

:41:09. > :41:13.fair. But if you don't mind waiting, I really would like to just get a

:41:13. > :41:16.word from the pole position man and the championship leader. There's a

:41:17. > :41:24.lot of discussion going on. I don't want to move away. I'm in pole

:41:24. > :41:30.position to talk to him first. Let's just see. Sebastian, how is

:41:30. > :41:33.the track feeling? It's quite slippery. Quite wet. So, do you

:41:34. > :41:38.think there is any chance of getting the intermediates to wear?

:41:38. > :41:44.Not with this amount of water, that is for sure. At the moment, its

:41:44. > :41:49.extremes. Maybe later on, with less water. What is your knowledge of

:41:49. > :41:53.these tiers Will? You've done so little running, in Istanbul you

:41:53. > :41:59.went into the wall, the car is quite tricky? The Tarmaced doesn't

:41:59. > :42:05.have a lot of grip, so it's quite tricky. I share this small

:42:05. > :42:09.knowledge with all of the others. Send them a bit of spray, that will

:42:10. > :42:17.fix them. I'm getting mugged here. Tanya, how are you? It's a long

:42:17. > :42:21.queue. As if I can find Mark Webber. I might try and find Alonso as well.

:42:21. > :42:26.The grid is busy, busy, busy. Alonso was just getting out of the

:42:26. > :42:33.car. It will be taking his skid lid off any time soon. I'm going to see

:42:33. > :42:43.their PR boss. You're kidding me, I can't even see him, let alone

:42:43. > :42:44.

:42:45. > :42:52.Fernando Alonso. Number three? Only one question, I don't have three

:42:52. > :42:57.minutes to wait. Will try later. Where are we? Let's move down. If

:42:57. > :43:00.we can actually squeeze past, we are just going to... How do the

:43:00. > :43:05.driver's focus with all of these people around them, people like me

:43:05. > :43:09.trying to Lost Questions? Look at these tyres. They can have dry

:43:09. > :43:14.tyres, just in case, intermediate and white tyres in the blanket.

:43:14. > :43:17.They are heated to around 60 degrees centigrade. 60 for the

:43:17. > :43:22.intermediate and the West. The drivers have four sets of

:43:22. > :43:26.intermediate tyres. They do what they say, somewhere between wet and

:43:26. > :43:30.dry. They only have three sets of the full wet tyre. If there isn't

:43:30. > :43:35.enough standing water, they can blister. But see if we can get a

:43:35. > :43:40.quick word with Mark Webber. I don't fancy standing in the queue

:43:40. > :43:47.for Fernando Alonso. How is the track, in your view? Pretty good.

:43:47. > :43:54.Tricky in places. Through 5, 6, 7, still a bit of water. Visibility is

:43:54. > :43:59.going to be pretty poor. Yes, not too bad. I would have liked to have

:43:59. > :44:02.done two laps, but on we go. this an afternoon to just stay on

:44:02. > :44:07.the road or do you just have to go for it? Survival is important for

:44:07. > :44:12.the first hour. It will probably go the different -- distance. There is

:44:12. > :44:16.an opportunity at every corner to drop it. You just got to stay cool.

:44:16. > :44:20.But keep the pay sensible. You must feel pretty good about these

:44:20. > :44:24.conditions, it gives you as good a chance as any to win this race?

:44:24. > :44:30.too bad. A few more grey hairs, but it's always nice to have a

:44:30. > :44:38.challenge. We've got Louis's car down here. They had difficult

:44:38. > :44:44.qualifying. This guy is not on the grid yet, Nico Rosberg. Where is

:44:44. > :44:48.his car? It's coming now. He's on his way around? He got out of the

:44:48. > :44:58.Pet line on time. Talk about leaving it left foot -- late.

:44:58. > :44:59.

:44:59. > :45:05.Jenson is running through the fence. That is the full wet tyre. You can

:45:05. > :45:11.see the deeper grooves. Obviously we are not allowed to look at the

:45:12. > :45:14.back of that car, by the looks of it. Nico Rosberg, with no

:45:14. > :45:18.preparation time whatsoever as he is literally just rocking up onto

:45:18. > :45:28.the grid. We will wander a little bit further back. Let's see what

:45:28. > :45:33.

:45:33. > :45:38.are you getting back from your drivers? No chance of intermediates

:45:38. > :45:44.at the moment. They do not think they will be able to start on

:45:44. > :45:50.intermediate. Do you have a clue what the crossover point is?

:45:50. > :45:55.The only information we have is with the testing. Thank you. Ross

:45:55. > :46:00.was saying the teams do not have an idea of what kind of lap time

:46:00. > :46:06.roughly that you say, the track is ready for Inters, is ready for

:46:06. > :46:11.slick tyres. I just wanted to have a quick word with somebody down

:46:11. > :46:16.here who I heard was coming on the grid with Renault but I cannot see

:46:16. > :46:23.him. I think we are running out of time. We have run out of time. Back

:46:23. > :46:28.to you, Jake. Thanks to you, Martin. A good effort. I think he was

:46:28. > :46:32.looking for Colin Farrell but Eddie held him up in the paddock. Martin

:46:32. > :46:36.was talking about the tyres. It is difficult for the teams to know

:46:36. > :46:43.what to do, David, because there are so little running on these. One

:46:43. > :46:48.team principal said we do not know what the crossover point is. That

:46:48. > :46:53.is right. If we were still using Bridgestone tyres, it would still

:46:53. > :47:00.be down to track temperature. With the Pirellis, there is so little

:47:00. > :47:04.wet running. There was some in Barcelona but not all the teams

:47:04. > :47:08.took part so it will be big journey of discovery this afternoon. Ross

:47:08. > :47:16.said they will have full wet to start blue rays. There are so much

:47:16. > :47:24.ability to lean on a full wet tyre laterally. -- they will start with

:47:24. > :47:31.full wet. Fitter Ali Petrov is feeling cool, his plate -- playing

:47:31. > :47:34.it nice and safe -- Vitaly Petrov. Let's see what is happening out on

:47:34. > :47:39.the track. We are gearing up for what could be a special Grand Prix

:47:39. > :47:44.this weekend. The cars are out on the grid. We saw Nico Rosberg

:47:44. > :47:50.arriving late on the grid. Yes, I'm sure they are still going through

:47:50. > :47:55.the final discussions and strategy wise. Is an important race for the

:47:55. > :48:00.guys on the pit wall. We can see the Williams team gearing up. There

:48:00. > :48:05.have Rubens Barrichello and he is a man who loves driving in the wet.

:48:05. > :48:10.He has driven for you in the rain, what is he like? He is a rain

:48:10. > :48:14.master, no doubt about it. The problem for him is there are a lot

:48:14. > :48:18.of people who are rain Masters. There is Vettel, we have talked

:48:18. > :48:22.about Michael Schumacher, there are lots of really talented people. The

:48:22. > :48:28.advantage that he may have had in years gone by has been gobbled up

:48:28. > :48:32.and everybody else is as good as he is in the wet. Jenson Button starts

:48:32. > :48:35.from seventh on the grid, another driver who enjoy is wet weather and

:48:35. > :48:41.another one who said his car would be faster in the race than

:48:41. > :48:51.qualifying. He is with Lee. Jenson, you came out onto the grid on into

:48:51. > :48:56.is, how slippy was the track? -- intos. Very. There is a lot of

:48:56. > :49:03.water out there. It has stopped raining. It is getting warmer. I

:49:03. > :49:09.have not decided what I am going to run. Time is ticking. I know. I

:49:09. > :49:13.think we will make the right course. Thank you. Just give us an idea,

:49:13. > :49:17.Eddie, who makes the decisions? How much will the team be leaning on

:49:17. > :49:24.Jenson Button to let them know how it will feel out there. He is the

:49:24. > :49:28.guy on the track. Always remember that I could never be more

:49:28. > :49:32.surprised with Ayrton Senna. He always used to take the longest way

:49:32. > :49:35.round the corner and the reason he did that was because there was more

:49:35. > :49:40.grip on the outside of the corner and then everyone started to follow

:49:40. > :49:46.him. He was the master for me. He could find his way around a wet

:49:46. > :49:52.track faster than anyone else. about Sebastien Buemi? His driving

:49:52. > :49:57.for Toro Rosso and he starts and 15th. Sebastian, what do you think?

:49:57. > :50:03.It is a difficult call, to be honest. It seems to be quite

:50:03. > :50:08.slippery. At the moment, we are still looking at how the weather

:50:09. > :50:13.will change in the next few minutes. Your team mate has the full wet

:50:13. > :50:18.set-up on, do you? Know, I do not but they tried something with him

:50:18. > :50:23.and we will see how it goes. Thank you. Not long to go until lights

:50:23. > :50:28.out at the start of this Grand Prix. At, you loved situations like this.

:50:28. > :50:33.Was it exciting more nerve-racking? I remember some of the opposition

:50:33. > :50:38.said Jordan, you can only win in the wet conditions. The reality was,

:50:38. > :50:42.we always tried to go the opposite to be thinking that the big teams

:50:42. > :50:47.would go and therefore, you know you're not actually racing them

:50:47. > :50:51.fair to fair. If the conditions happened to favour us all the

:50:51. > :50:55.strategy, those days you could go for more fuel and get a longer run,

:50:55. > :51:01.those aspects, a thing that was what was very good and successful.

:51:01. > :51:06.We did have a couple of key guys. Gary Anderson was a magic man and

:51:06. > :51:10.good at anticipating those situations. Once upon a time, Eddie

:51:10. > :51:15.was the person making the decisions, these days it is people like

:51:15. > :51:20.Christian Horner. This is what he had to save. What is the smart

:51:20. > :51:23.thing to do, Christian? It is very interesting. The weather says it

:51:23. > :51:27.will brighten up a little bit but I think you have to be on the right

:51:28. > :51:34.tyres at the right times. When you are starting from pole, you do not

:51:34. > :51:39.want to take that many risks. that will be full works? I have not

:51:39. > :51:44.spoken to the drivers but it is difficult to say at the moment. It

:51:44. > :51:48.looked like full wets but it changes quickly. Thank you. Rain or

:51:48. > :51:52.no rain, the perfect place to be is on pole position, even if you have

:51:53. > :51:56.only done it by two-tenths of a second over three miles on the

:51:56. > :52:02.tarmac. This is how close it is between first and second on the

:52:02. > :52:07.grid. Let's compare the qualifying laps

:52:07. > :52:16.with the two men occupying the front row of the great. Sebastian

:52:16. > :52:20.Vettel is on pole, Fernando Alonso is second on the grid. 95 mph

:52:20. > :52:25.through the first apex, turn to follows immediately and they are

:52:25. > :52:31.neck and neck. Ahead retraction zone as they head towards turn

:52:31. > :52:37.three and four, the chicane. Alonso is slightly ahead. The wall on the

:52:37. > :52:41.exit has claimed many cars this weekend. The fast turn five corner,

:52:41. > :52:48.Alonso on the right seems slightly uncertain. Look at the steering

:52:48. > :52:52.angle that Alonso has to put in. He has a slower steering rack on that

:52:52. > :52:57.car. Vettel gets on the throttle early and gains an advantage

:52:57. > :53:04.through the exit of that chicane. It is a long run down to terms 8

:53:04. > :53:10.and 9, building up the speed. As they sweep into the apex, Vettel

:53:10. > :53:16.maintains his advantage, the line very similar. These two drivers

:53:16. > :53:20.absolutely on the top of their game. They change is at different times,

:53:20. > :53:27.suggesting different gear ratios. A heavy braking zone for the turn ten

:53:27. > :53:33.hairpin. They take absolutely identical lines, technically

:53:33. > :53:40.perfect. A long straight up to 200 mph, heading to the end of the lap.

:53:40. > :53:43.Vettel makes a quick brake balance adjustment ahead of turns 13 and 14.

:53:44. > :53:51.This is all about who will be on pole position. As they grants --

:53:51. > :53:57.glance across the kerbs, Vettel looks more comfortable. There it is.

:53:57. > :54:03.Another pole position. His 21st. Sebastian Vettel just aces Fernando

:54:03. > :54:06.Alonso. I love to see that. That is how close it is in Formula One. It

:54:06. > :54:12.could be pretty close this afternoon. We are in for a magic

:54:12. > :54:16.trick. They have on pole position, Sebastian Vettel, and then the best

:54:16. > :54:21.starter currently, Fernando Alonso, which will be very tight into the

:54:21. > :54:25.first corner. McLaren have decided go on a wet set-up and they will be

:54:25. > :54:31.very fast. Who knows what will happen. We believe we will be

:54:31. > :54:35.starting under a safety car but we will see. Time to handover to

:54:35. > :54:38.Martin Brundle and David Coulthard. The national sport here is ice

:54:38. > :54:48.hockey bit once the year something arrives which is equally ferocious

:54:48. > :54:48.

:54:48. > :55:31.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:55:31. > :55:37.be famous for its winter sports but today seems more about watersports.

:55:37. > :55:44.This track Essex in the St Lawrence Seaway. Be bumpy track has caused

:55:44. > :55:49.many to shed a tear here. The should be one of the best races of

:55:49. > :55:55.the year. This is normally an exciting race. There is the track

:55:55. > :56:00.layout. 2.7 miles and 14 turns. The DRS, if they are allowed to use it

:56:00. > :56:05.in the race, you're not allowed to operate the rear wing with wet

:56:05. > :56:09.tyres on, unless a few drivers go out on slick tyres, they will

:56:09. > :56:15.enable it and everyone can use it. It is quite a challenge for them.

:56:15. > :56:21.We will get into that during the race. The KERS system, the extra

:56:21. > :56:25.energy boost, it is quite hard to do in wet track conditions. It

:56:25. > :56:31.dramatically affects the way the cars slowed down. A big crowd, as

:56:31. > :56:35.always. They are in on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They

:56:35. > :56:40.love for Miller won here in this part of North America. Hopefully,

:56:40. > :56:45.we can put on a good show for them as we hope we can put on a good

:56:45. > :56:50.show for you. Welcome to everybody around the world to tunes in to the

:56:50. > :56:54.BBC commentary. They seek confirmation and I am saddened a

:56:54. > :56:59.little bit, the race will start behind the safety car. David, is

:56:59. > :57:03.that right? Given the amount of incidents we have seen here with

:57:04. > :57:08.dry starts, the short run into the first tight corner, it is a view

:57:08. > :57:12.which has been taken to enable every car to be able to make a

:57:12. > :57:16.start. The chances are the cars will be strung out when they

:57:16. > :57:20.eventually release them and that will make it a bit safer. I think

:57:20. > :57:24.the view from the race director is we simply do not know how slippy

:57:24. > :57:29.this track is and we do not want to risk losing a bunch of cars early

:57:29. > :57:33.on. Yes, but these are the finest drivers in the world and I think

:57:33. > :57:39.they are ready to cope with the conditions. Safety car starts means

:57:39. > :57:45.everyone has to be a full wet tyres and you cannot go out there, the

:57:45. > :57:51.FIA said, you cannot -- if you want to start behind the safety car, it

:57:51. > :57:55.must be extremely wet, you must put the wet tyres on. Therefore, the

:57:55. > :58:01.DRS, the opening rear wing like a little shutter and gives them

:58:01. > :58:04.higher top speed on the long straights of this Gilles Villeneuve

:58:04. > :58:10.circuit, that is disabled at this time. Normally it would come in at

:58:10. > :58:16.the end of lap two. At the moment, it will not come in until the race

:58:16. > :58:22.director deems the tracks safe enough to use it. For now, the wet

:58:22. > :58:29.tyres on. They are pressured up to 60 degrees centigrade. The red

:58:29. > :58:39.lights are used as a countdown to the start proceed dear. --

:58:39. > :58:39.

:58:39. > :59:23.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:59:23. > :59:30.Sergio Perez who is not racing rule but the stewards decided he

:59:30. > :59:34.did a good race over the weekend. What is the point of having a roll?

:59:34. > :59:37.I think it is to protect at the start of the season when you have

:59:37. > :59:41.new teams and you do not know if they are up to scratch. We have

:59:41. > :59:45.seen cars who have taken the start of the Grand Prix you have no place

:59:45. > :59:49.to be there but I think in this case it is a sensible decision.

:59:49. > :59:55.Virgin have been in the 107 % will that many Grand Prix is already

:59:55. > :59:59.busy and d'Ambrosio has shown he is more than capable. I agree with you.

:59:59. > :00:04.If I was a steward, I would let him in. It is to stop the people who

:00:04. > :00:14.were miles off the pace like Hispania were in Australia.

:00:14. > :00:19.

:00:19. > :00:24.Alguersuari starts at the back of The race starts now. There is no

:00:24. > :00:29.formation lap. That his wife Alguersuari is going to be able to

:00:29. > :00:34.get onto the back of the field. He will be sitting there while the

:00:34. > :00:38.tyres lose crucial temperature. It's very slow at the back of the

:00:39. > :00:44.field. I think it's the other version, I'm lucky in the far

:00:44. > :00:51.distance. This is working out not too bad for the Toro Rosso. He's

:00:51. > :00:54.not allowed to leave the end of the pit lane. Extreme wet, with the

:00:54. > :00:59.safety car, but we are not expecting rain until halfway

:00:59. > :01:03.through the race. The first part, he knows that already. He

:01:03. > :01:09.understands the rules with the safety car. The second part sends a

:01:09. > :01:14.shiver down my spine. I remember being in a Grand Prix, where you

:01:14. > :01:19.get messages from engineers, stay there, the radar tells us that the

:01:19. > :01:26.rain will stop in two minutes. 10 minutes later... You cannot give

:01:26. > :01:30.information like that. I think it's misleading. If you can say, we know

:01:30. > :01:35.it is raining 100 metres away from the circuit, we have someone

:01:35. > :01:39.standing there, that's good information. But to give radar

:01:39. > :01:45.information, that's difficult. Confirmation that the DRS, the rear

:01:45. > :01:49.wing, it is disabled at this point. They are all on wet tyres. As part

:01:49. > :01:55.of the rules. How quickly would you bring the safety car in? At the end

:01:55. > :01:58.of this lap. It's really good, the drivers have seen whether standing

:01:58. > :02:02.water is, the track will dry out pretty quickly with all of these

:02:02. > :02:08.cars running at speed. There will be sucking the water out of the

:02:08. > :02:11.tarmac and putting it up into the air. I started a race at Brands

:02:11. > :02:15.Hatch, and it was much wetter than that. We couldn't see where we were

:02:15. > :02:21.going, but we were still going for it. Personally, I did the race

:02:21. > :02:24.should have started properly. Viscount finish by centres on the

:02:24. > :02:30.Toro Rosso, if they started from a normal good start, they would have

:02:30. > :02:40.to wait until the last car got to the end of the pit lane before he

:02:40. > :02:46.

:02:46. > :02:50.could join the race. Now he's able to run around on the pack. You can

:02:50. > :02:53.see if the karting line, where there seems to be more grip. Where

:02:53. > :02:58.the rubber is on the racing line, you can put some water on the top

:02:58. > :03:08.of it and it becomes as slick as you like. Slippery as anything you

:03:08. > :03:18.

:03:18. > :03:22.can imagine. You're looking along 100 metres osprey, they are looking

:03:22. > :03:26.along 50 metres of spray. It does look more difficult from the

:03:26. > :03:30.driver's position. It wasn't supposed to be easy? It I think

:03:30. > :03:35.that's quite a good camera angle. Like the driver, it doesn't have a

:03:35. > :03:39.window wiper. It has a little roll of film, which I am sure will move

:03:39. > :03:46.across and clear that screen. These are one of the biggest difficulties.

:03:46. > :03:50.Its visibility. We have all raced on formulas that probably have less

:03:50. > :03:54.grip than a Formula One car in the wet. But not being able to see

:03:54. > :03:57.where you're going, spotting where you are braking, that is the big

:03:57. > :04:07.challenge when it is wet. People have the benefit of the first few

:04:07. > :04:20.

:04:20. > :04:30.cars running. Within 10 or 15 minutes, the rain will be coming

:04:30. > :04:34.

:04:34. > :04:38.pretty heavy. Red Bull have got two or three people out there. It was a

:04:38. > :04:48.matter of looking at the sky, when the rain turns up it was coming in

:04:48. > :04:54.

:04:54. > :05:03.downtown Montreal at the back side of the circuit. I cannot see

:05:03. > :05:13.anything, but 15 minutes belonged time. -- a long time. To go through

:05:13. > :05:14.

:05:14. > :05:24.the people we know, McLaren have got in wet style bit of rear wing.

:05:24. > :05:29.

:05:29. > :05:39.Jaime Alguersuari... Have you finished? Le Mr Holton at once to

:05:39. > :05:40.

:05:40. > :05:48.get finished because they have a wet set-up -- Lewis Hamilton.

:05:48. > :05:55.think that went a long way towards a set -- a wet set-up? Yes, it's so

:05:55. > :06:00.watch out for them when the safety card comes in at. One of the things

:06:00. > :06:07.you are reminded of is that on this circuit, very high top speeds, not

:06:07. > :06:11.as many fast corners. That is the same as a wet set-up. Williams are

:06:11. > :06:17.running at the same winds they had in the Monaco Grand Prix so cannot

:06:17. > :06:21.get more downforce and there is not enough standing water. And

:06:22. > :06:26.softening springs are a thing of the past, downforce is still good

:06:27. > :06:33.in the wet, so what you have to balance out any shift that you get.

:06:33. > :06:37.It used to be the case that if you put wets on the cars, it would

:06:37. > :06:47.increase the downforce on them because of the way the air separate

:06:47. > :06:51.

:06:51. > :06:55.of a car, so they can clear up standing water. In raises the car

:06:55. > :07:04.few millimetres, maybe five mm. you've got the tread depth of the

:07:04. > :07:07.tyres. Overall, it's a significant raising. Thank goodness, we are

:07:07. > :07:11.going to have a race. They are all in the order they lined up on the

:07:11. > :07:16.grid. The lights are going out on the top of the safety car any time

:07:16. > :07:26.soon. That is the signal for Sebastian Vettel, that he will,

:07:26. > :07:30.progressively, become the pace- setter. The SLS, if you drove it on

:07:30. > :07:35.the road, it would terrify you how fast it would go. They are trying

:07:35. > :07:45.not to bump into the back of it, such is the grip, pace and speed of

:07:45. > :07:47.

:07:47. > :07:52.Formula One cars. But not while they are behind the safety car.

:07:52. > :08:00.They are saving fuel, but that doesn't really matter any more. It

:08:00. > :08:03.means they can run high air -- higher. If you let the batteries go

:08:03. > :08:10.cold, you can't use them for the rest of the race. KERS may not be

:08:10. > :08:13.much of a factor today. Absolutely. You might not want to run the KERS

:08:13. > :08:17.on wet conditions because of the effect it has on the rear axle,

:08:17. > :08:21.when it is charging the batteries. No rain at the moment. It looks

:08:21. > :08:28.like we are gearing up at the moment. The safety car is well out

:08:28. > :08:32.the way. He's gone early. Alonso has gone with him. No

:08:32. > :08:39.overtaking until they get to the first safety car line. That is why

:08:39. > :08:44.Alonso fancied a bit of a look. Vettel has gone too deep. They

:08:44. > :08:49.could overtake it to that final corner. Alonso goes to the right.

:08:49. > :08:55.Vettel has the turning point of the corner. Behind, have we got a

:08:55. > :08:59.McLaren? Webber is round. Mark Webber, and that is Lewis Hamilton.

:08:59. > :09:03.Mark Webber keeps the engine running. Fuel for almost to the

:09:03. > :09:12.back of the field. It was Hamilton getting right up the inside of him.

:09:12. > :09:18.He's always in the wars, is Lewis. Go down very well. Lewis is now

:09:18. > :09:27.behind the Mercedes of Rosberg, I think that is Rosberg in front of

:09:27. > :09:37.him. In Jenson Button's way. Button has gone too deep into the corner.

:09:37. > :09:39.

:09:39. > :09:42.Schumacher drives completely around the outside. Rosberg is in front.

:09:42. > :09:48.They fancy a look at the back of Rosberg. They are struggling so

:09:48. > :09:53.much for grip. They are all over the show, trying to slow it down.

:09:53. > :09:58.It's not about visibility, it's about known tyre temperature.

:09:58. > :10:03.Schumacher, where he tried to drive clean around the outside? A bit of

:10:03. > :10:08.room to breathe. There is Mark Webber. He dropped a long way down

:10:08. > :10:17.the field, did Webber. On board with Hamilton, as we head towards

:10:17. > :10:19.the last chicane. Lewis Hamilton, not a lot of space on the inside.

:10:19. > :10:26.Rosberg is ahead of Michael Schumacher. We will pick them up as

:10:27. > :10:32.they go over the line. Vettel leads, two seconds from Alonso. Sue Macca,

:10:32. > :10:42.Hamilton, Button. In eight place is Paul Di Resta. Still they are going

:10:42. > :10:50.

:10:50. > :10:54.that Massa was looking more comfortable. Vettel bolted up front.

:10:54. > :10:59.He's gone at the moment? Great start from Sebastian Vettel. It

:10:59. > :11:04.looks like he had gone too deep in took that first chicane. At this

:11:04. > :11:10.point he has cleaner air, good visibility and he's using it to his

:11:10. > :11:20.advantage. Did Michael Schumacher have a bit of overs dear? You can

:11:20. > :11:21.

:11:21. > :11:26.see that McLaren isn't able to who will be well positioned as he

:11:26. > :11:31.comes out of their chicane. On the previous lap, he looked down the

:11:31. > :11:36.outside of Michael. Michael goes to the inside. Michael comes across.

:11:36. > :11:41.You can see that he's pushed Lewis wired. The Lewis will lose out to

:11:41. > :11:46.Button. Will he lose out to anybody else? Michael squeezed him onto the

:11:46. > :11:50.grass. Did he push him onto the grass? Will have to look at it. I

:11:50. > :11:58.don't big there is any bad play going on there. Alonso is

:11:58. > :12:01.struggling, Vettel has half the pitch length advantage now. They

:12:01. > :12:09.could have overtaken in the last corner. This is the first safety

:12:09. > :12:13.car line. There is the contact between Hamilton and Webber. Will

:12:13. > :12:20.there be a steward's inquiry on that one? Button is back ahead.

:12:20. > :12:25.This is a replay from on board with Lewis Hamilton. Webber gave him

:12:25. > :12:29.space, you absolutely right. Lewis understeered into him. Incredibly

:12:29. > :12:35.difficult conditions for the drivers. A marshal is out in the

:12:35. > :12:41.middle of the track at the last chicane, picking up debris. He is

:12:41. > :12:46.thankfully out of the way. A view, there, of the racing field he

:12:46. > :12:52.didn't want to see today. This is where Michael started to take his

:12:52. > :12:59.line. Lewis was skating down the outside. He's lost a place to

:12:59. > :13:03.Button will stop he only lost one place. Vettel leads by 4.2 seconds.

:13:03. > :13:11.Alonso is struggling in these conditions. You almost sense that

:13:11. > :13:15.if Massa past him, he would be gone. The McLaren Janowska struggling

:13:15. > :13:23.with each other. Kobayashi is just behind them. The rest have dropped

:13:24. > :13:33.down to 13th somewhere. He's missed the chicane. Webber is in 12th

:13:34. > :13:39.

:13:39. > :13:48.investigation for that first corner. Will Lewis Hamilton get another

:13:48. > :13:51.drive through... Touched! Lewis Hamilton, with suspension damage,

:13:51. > :13:55.puncture. I'll be surprised if he makes it back into the pits. The

:13:55. > :13:59.problem with those conditions is that Jenson Button cannot see in

:13:59. > :14:03.his mirrors. There is so much spray coming off the front axle that any

:14:03. > :14:09.visibility you have is cancelled. This is incredible. Lewis seems to

:14:09. > :14:14.touch with Michael. Almost touching with Michael. He's getting together

:14:14. > :14:18.with his team-mates. Suspension broken, isn't it? No, it's more

:14:18. > :14:26.like a wheel rim. Let's see what trends and the what? What is he

:14:26. > :14:31.doing?! I don't think you get an answer to that. I think he was

:14:31. > :14:35.trying to pass you! You can see nothing out of those mirrors. The

:14:35. > :14:39.safety car is out. I imagine that's because of their debris on the pit

:14:40. > :14:45.straight? No question about that. Why has Lewis parked the car in the

:14:45. > :14:48.middle of turn five? He had an opportunity on the way into the

:14:48. > :14:55.second chicane. He had an opportunity just before the barrier

:14:55. > :15:01.to park it. This is difficult times. It's hard enough without running

:15:01. > :15:04.into your team-mate. You had that a couple of times at McLaren, you and

:15:04. > :15:11.Mika Hakkinen question not it's the one thing that you want to avoid.

:15:11. > :15:21.Unfortunately, I took him out in Austria, in pole position. It was a

:15:21. > :15:26.

:15:26. > :15:30.Jenson Button is in the pits, coming in for checks. Lewis

:15:30. > :15:36.Hamilton comes off the last chicane at much faster. Jenson Button is

:15:36. > :15:40.making his way on the nearest line and it was the smallest touch.

:15:40. > :15:47.Lewis would say, he should have seen me coming, he was slowest of

:15:47. > :15:53.the corner. Intermediate tyres going on. It looks as if Jenson

:15:53. > :15:57.Button has gone up early. As long as he can get temperature...

:15:57. > :16:02.can macro has gone for intermediates because McLaren feel

:16:02. > :16:09.he is so far down the field, they should try something different. Dry

:16:09. > :16:16.in the pit lane and no more sign of rain just now. This is another

:16:17. > :16:22.replay of the Contact. Lewis get a better drive of the corner. Jenson

:16:22. > :16:31.Button comes across towards the pit wall, the normal line, and he is on

:16:31. > :16:35.sited. This is the view from behind. He has committed at that stage.

:16:35. > :16:39.There will be an interesting debate between the drivers about he was

:16:39. > :16:48.right. But Jenson Button, if he is not looking in his mirrors, will

:16:48. > :16:55.not know he has pulled up alongside him. P City of McLaren are flying

:16:55. > :17:02.up on the pit lane. Anthony Hamilton, Louis's Dad. But he is

:17:02. > :17:07.here as manager at. No further action, for obvious reasons. Every

:17:07. > :17:11.think looks all right to us, we can see no damage -- everything. They

:17:11. > :17:15.always say they are the best of friends at McLaren, I always

:17:15. > :17:20.thought it would only last a certain time and there will be

:17:20. > :17:25.harsh words after. Lewis would say he had a better run, and he will

:17:25. > :17:31.say, you must have seen me coming and he moved over on me. Jensen

:17:31. > :17:36.will be thinking, up what is he doing? They will never agree on

:17:36. > :17:43.that, but Lewis Hamilton is out of this grand prix. That contact

:17:43. > :17:48.between Hamilton and Mark Webber is not under investigation because

:17:49. > :17:55.Hamilton is parked outside turn five. That is Lewis, at crash

:17:55. > :18:00.helmet off, normally if you are feeling guilty, that will stay on!

:18:00. > :18:06.He is entitled to his point of view, the bottom line is that the

:18:06. > :18:16.incident between team-mates, they are going to get up close and

:18:16. > :18:19.

:18:19. > :18:25.personal. Lewis is still under investigation, but for another

:18:25. > :18:30.incident now. And what did he say in Monaco? It always seems to be me

:18:30. > :18:36.in the Steward's office. Do you think that is just a racing

:18:36. > :18:40.incident or should be looked at further? I think that Jansen would

:18:40. > :18:44.say he could not see anything in his mirrors and Lewis would say, I

:18:44. > :18:48.came off the corner faster and I am surprised you did not give any room.

:18:48. > :18:54.I do not think there will be a reprimand. Lewis has already got

:18:54. > :18:58.one reprimand this year and if you take three for a racing incident,

:18:58. > :19:06.you get a five place grid drop and so the risk could be stacking them

:19:06. > :19:12.up! In the few laps we had, he had contact with Mark Webber and almost

:19:12. > :19:19.Schumacher and of course his team- mate. So this situation, when the

:19:19. > :19:24.safety card does get called in, Sebastian Vettel becomes the safety

:19:24. > :19:30.car and the pace-setter. That white line is the first safety car line

:19:30. > :19:34.and you can overtake after that. It is the first safety -- safety car

:19:34. > :19:44.line and that is why Fernando Alonso, trained fully engaged, had

:19:44. > :19:44.

:19:44. > :19:48.a run a. -- his brain fully engaged, had a run at it. I have been told

:19:48. > :19:54.now the problem with those intermediate so is they drop out of

:19:54. > :19:58.the temperature window -- intermediates. They are hard to

:19:58. > :20:05.build up. If they are in the optimum Zona, 80 or 90 degrees

:20:05. > :20:12.centigrade, they are much faster than a wet tier as rain begins to

:20:12. > :20:22.fall. -- be wet tyre. temperature has dropped, at the

:20:22. > :20:23.

:20:23. > :20:28.rain is coming and Jensen is on the wrong tyres. An incident involving

:20:28. > :20:34.safety card three. The speed limit is under investigation. That is

:20:34. > :20:41.Lewis Hamilton's third enquiry of the day. So two and since he

:20:41. > :20:46.dropped out of the race. Safety car speed limit, he must have been on

:20:46. > :20:56.the first safety car period at some point. You are only allowed to do a

:20:56. > :20:56.

:20:56. > :21:00.certain speed between the sector points to make sure... Exactly. The

:21:01. > :21:06.driver is given a target time and they drive to that, so he must have

:21:06. > :21:11.been out of that. A Jenson Button has the same enquiry, safety car

:21:11. > :21:18.speed limit. That is a target time you must not beat. You have to pace

:21:18. > :21:27.yourself not to be ticked. You have an intermittent down shift problem,

:21:27. > :21:34.it is the paddle itself. When we do a pit stop, Mark, we are thinking

:21:34. > :21:38.of a steering wheel change. They do have a system on the back of the

:21:38. > :21:43.steering wheel, but there is only one Activation when you pull down a

:21:43. > :21:48.flicker away with your right hand. On a Red Bull, can you push and

:21:48. > :21:52.pull on either side? For you can, but on a rocker so the switch to

:21:52. > :21:56.activate down is only on one side. That is why they will say

:21:56. > :22:03.intermittent, that is maybe because of water getting into the other

:22:03. > :22:10.system -- getting into the system. There is no other reason. When he

:22:10. > :22:15.comes into the pit stop, and will the car engine stop? In it will not

:22:16. > :22:21.-- will the car engine stop? It will not. By at is a matter of fact,

:22:21. > :22:29.the safety car speed limit, so that is a guaranteed to drive through --

:22:29. > :22:37.that is a matter of fact. They must have seen at some data. We will

:22:37. > :22:42.keep a close eye on Jenson Button. He might be coming through the pit

:22:42. > :22:50.lane for a penalty soon, but we will see. The safety car lights are

:22:50. > :22:58.still on the but it is in at the end of this lack. So many -- this

:22:58. > :23:03.lap. Will Fernando Alonso be able to match Sebastian Vettel when he

:23:03. > :23:09.decides to take off? The best of the pack are too far back. As soon

:23:09. > :23:15.as Sebastian Vettel has a gap after 10 -- after turned 10, as soon as

:23:15. > :23:22.he has a big enough gap between the safety car, he will go for it. So

:23:22. > :23:28.they need to be as close as possible. It is hard to judge.

:23:28. > :23:34.do you judge when you will catch the safety car? But he has got it

:23:34. > :23:38.right. And Fernando Alonso is not as close. He needs to slow down.

:23:38. > :23:43.And Michael Schumacher trying to come along the inside of Nico

:23:43. > :23:50.Rosberg and he gets away with it. but he is not allowed to overtake

:23:50. > :24:00.until the finish line. You can do that, that is what it is all about.

:24:00. > :24:01.

:24:01. > :24:08.A red all the leads Ferrari. -- Red Bull leads Ferrari. Mark Webber is

:24:08. > :24:15.back in 9th position. Jenson Button at his 12th and under investigation.

:24:15. > :24:25.-- is in 12th position. And Lewis Hamilton is watching. Mark Webber

:24:25. > :24:33.very close between -- behind Vitaly Petrov. He would be slightly

:24:33. > :24:38.compromised. Not a lot of quick. is coming across the racing line.

:24:38. > :24:44.Mack that his way you spin up the tyres when you have a wet tier

:24:44. > :24:50.across the rubber. Desperately trying to keep off that safety line,

:24:50. > :25:00.but you sometimes have no choice. The drier two penalty for car four.

:25:00. > :25:01.

:25:01. > :25:06.-- a drive through penalty. He has passed... Jenson Button has really

:25:06. > :25:13.made advances, but he has a drive- through penalty for this safety car

:25:13. > :25:19.speed limit issue. And that means that that will cost him about 20

:25:19. > :25:25.seconds. It will be less than that, at about 12 seconds is the time

:25:25. > :25:32.through the pit lane, so that will bring him back out, probably about

:25:32. > :25:37.a 16th place. Jenson Button is doing 62 mph, they are doing 180

:25:37. > :25:42.down the pit straight, and it is a very unusual pit lane where you

:25:42. > :25:52.feeding to turn two and not the first corner. He goes around the

:25:52. > :25:56.

:25:56. > :26:00.outside and slots in nicely. Vitaly Petrov feeling the need again to

:26:00. > :26:10.get defensive. But the Red Bull does not have the attraction of

:26:10. > :26:16.

:26:16. > :26:21.that corner that Renault does have. And for sure, Renault has better

:26:21. > :26:24.traction, that is unusual. They were famous for having a great

:26:24. > :26:30.attraction in the past and he used to think that was because of the

:26:30. > :26:37.weight distribution. But you -- but this year, everybody has within a

:26:37. > :26:45.1%, so it has to be something else. It cannot be the engine. It is

:26:45. > :26:50.starting to drizzle again a. Rubens Barrichello has passed Sebastien

:26:50. > :27:00.Buemi. Jenson Button likes those intermediate tyres, and having

:27:00. > :27:01.

:27:01. > :27:10.served his penalty straightaway, he is back in the action. They are all

:27:10. > :27:15.desperately trying to find some grip in the spray. It is virtually

:27:15. > :27:19.dry, that line. Be as his great information for the front runners -

:27:19. > :27:29.- of this is. They will look at Jenson Button and there is no

:27:29. > :27:34.stress for those out front. have got to balance that against

:27:34. > :27:39.the weather. But looking at Jenson Button sailing past everybody, the

:27:39. > :27:47.front runners must be thinking it is time for a set of intermediates.

:27:47. > :27:53.Mark Webber might as well do that, down in 9th place. That is a replay.

:27:53. > :27:58.He went round the outside of Vitaly Petrov. But Vitaly Petrov uses that

:27:58. > :28:05.attraction and comes back up the outside. As Mark Webber slice

:28:05. > :28:12.across the front? He does, indeed. Mark Webber takes that position.

:28:12. > :28:19.This computer is slow updating today. Jenson Button is going past

:28:19. > :28:23.Pastor Maldonado, absolutely flying. Time to think about intermediates.

:28:23. > :28:27.Now we have a four second gap in front of Jenson Button. We will see

:28:27. > :28:34.just how fast he can beat with a clear track and not having to

:28:34. > :28:39.overtake, and I think it will be a very fast lap indeed. That contact

:28:39. > :28:46.with the Hamilton it might have played into his hands! -- with

:28:46. > :28:49.Hamilton might have played. Rubens Barrichello has gone for

:28:49. > :28:54.intermediates. Fernando Alonso will be missed the last chicane, so he

:28:54. > :29:02.would need to be careful using his lap trigger that he has not gained

:29:02. > :29:08.advantage or he could be in for a penalty. Button has come across a

:29:08. > :29:14.line -- across the line two seconds slower than the leaders. You just

:29:14. > :29:19.have to look to see he has 20% more grip. The good thing for Sebastian

:29:19. > :29:24.Vettel with a four second lead is he does not need to be first. This

:29:24. > :29:34.form not go from damp to strike in one lap, so he does not have to

:29:34. > :29:40.

:29:40. > :29:46.take the risk. -- damp to dry. it is raining now, so why they are

:29:46. > :29:50.waiting until best little spell finishers, they will then come in

:29:50. > :30:00.for intermediates. Rubens Barrichello did not put on

:30:00. > :30:07.

:30:07. > :30:11.look at Heidfeld, into the last corner. Let's keep an eye on

:30:11. > :30:20.Button's lap time, as he finishes the lap. But how quickly Button has

:30:20. > :30:26.closed in on the rest of that Park. As they go over the line, Button

:30:26. > :30:35.does a 32.9. He's four seconds quicker on the intermediate tyres.

:30:35. > :30:41.What a difficult call, David. it's working for him at the moment.

:30:41. > :30:44.Hour race leader, Sebastian Vettel. A normal pit-stop, as Zaw Minn --

:30:44. > :30:51.assuming a four second stop, will cost you 16 seconds. Sebastian

:30:51. > :31:01.doesn't want to leave it too much longer. He's past Heidfeld, making

:31:01. > :31:02.

:31:02. > :31:06.his way past the two Renaults now. That is seventh Place now for him.

:31:06. > :31:09.It's also how much time Jenson is going to lose in the traffic. It's

:31:09. > :31:17.all right have a grip, but he doesn't have the clear space on the

:31:17. > :31:20.track. Getting nicely out of shape. No traction control on these cars.

:31:20. > :31:26.They do run a different engine maps to help them drive the cars in

:31:26. > :31:31.these conditions. Just the torque characteristics of the engine, they

:31:31. > :31:40.get a little bit more drivable. Fernando Alonso, the first of the

:31:40. > :31:47.Ferrari's in the pit stop. Webber is through to seventh place. Alonso

:31:47. > :31:51.and Rosberg in for intermediate tyres, which we are expecting to go

:31:51. > :31:55.on that beautiful Ferrari. You can still see a bit of rain in the

:31:55. > :32:02.foreground. The Hamilton and Button incident will be investigated after

:32:02. > :32:09.the race. That will come up shortly. A 4.4 stop. Alonso feeds in. He's

:32:09. > :32:15.going to be writing between the two Renaults. He's got to cut across

:32:15. > :32:23.Petrov, no problem, he's got that covered. Button goes around the

:32:23. > :32:27.outside of Di Resta. Let's have a look at Button's lap time that time

:32:27. > :32:31.around. Still, 22 seconds behind Vettel. Red Bull will be watching

:32:31. > :32:35.that closely. There will also be looking at Adrian Sutil, currently

:32:36. > :32:40.in 19th. He's just gone purple, which means fastest in their last

:32:40. > :32:44.sector. If Force India is delivering the fastest lap time on

:32:44. > :32:48.intermediates, they surely have to be coming in. Is it a case of act

:32:48. > :32:54.in haste, repent at leisure? Or get on with it, because you are losing

:32:54. > :33:00.out? As we saw in Monaco, we never thought anyone could do 60 laps on

:33:00. > :33:04.a set of primes. And someone did. Sebastian Vettel is going past our

:33:04. > :33:09.commentary box. Maybe he's comfortable on those tyres? What

:33:09. > :33:14.time is he going to do here? A couple of seconds off the fastest,

:33:15. > :33:20.but none the less, Alonso. Alonso and Heidfeld, just out of the pits

:33:20. > :33:27.on the intermediates. Alonso takes out the normal turning point.

:33:27. > :33:33.Button is on the back of the two Renaults. They are still working

:33:33. > :33:37.for Vettel and Massa, the wet tyres. It is getting busy down into turn

:33:37. > :33:43.one, Button with a pair of Renaults to sort out before he can show us

:33:43. > :33:49.how good... And Rosberg, he is also out there, on intermediates. Let's

:33:49. > :33:55.confirm who has come in and put into the pits on at the moment.

:33:55. > :34:00.Button, Michael Schumacher, further down the field to you've got

:34:00. > :34:06.Barrichello and four or five others that have been in and changed their

:34:06. > :34:10.tyres. But Button confide his way past the traffic. Petrov started

:34:10. > :34:15.off in ladder racing in Russia. He will certainly know how to handle

:34:15. > :34:20.these conditions. Jenson Button gets a must -- much better drive. A

:34:21. > :34:25.fairly easy pass, into turn 8. how hard it is raining, David.

:34:25. > :34:31.Surely Jenson is going to start struggling. You have heavy spray

:34:31. > :34:36.coming up, aquaplaning. We don't know how much heavier the rain is

:34:36. > :34:46.going to get. What do you think of the tyres? Starting to get a bit of

:34:46. > :34:54.

:34:54. > :34:59.oversteer. It's a good idea to go into the pits. We have a safety car

:34:59. > :35:04.rout. The safety car is deployed. I haven't seen any incidents at the

:35:04. > :35:14.moment. Fernando Alonso, pitting under the safety car. He's the

:35:14. > :35:16.

:35:16. > :35:20.first to blink. Back to wet? Indeed Sebastian Vettel. Massa missed the

:35:20. > :35:26.opportunity to come in. Alonso, look at the colours on those.

:35:26. > :35:34.Button does indeed pet. That was short-lived. By not reacting too

:35:34. > :35:40.quickly, Vettel, Massa, Kobayashi, Heidfeld, Petrov, Di Resta, it has

:35:40. > :35:48.worked out beautifully for them. Petrova 6, Michael Schumacher did

:35:48. > :35:53.pit. He put the intermediate song. But why have we got a safety car?

:35:53. > :35:57.don't see any car stopped on the track, looking at our circuit guide.

:35:57. > :36:01.Clearly, the race director, Charlie Whiting, has pre-empted a big

:36:01. > :36:04.incident, rather than waiting for it. In fairness, it's something

:36:04. > :36:08.that the drivers' Association are always pushing for. Don't wait for

:36:08. > :36:12.one of us to have a big aquaplaning crash before you stick out the

:36:12. > :36:22.safety car. But that's not fair on those that have stayed on the full

:36:22. > :36:36.

:36:36. > :36:40.wet tyre, anticipating heavy rain? There are three sets available for

:36:40. > :36:43.the afternoon. On they go. Because the safety car goes out and picks

:36:43. > :36:51.up the first car, hasn't picked up the leader yet, that the safety car

:36:51. > :36:56.was half a lap away. Quick thinking by Red Bull. They have worked out

:36:56. > :37:01.that Vettel, with a fresh set of wets, he comes out immediately

:37:01. > :37:08.behind Felipe Massa. Vettel, effectively, although he has lost

:37:08. > :37:12.track position, he's had a free Pep stop -- pit stop? He's put in

:37:12. > :37:22.another set of forwards on, but he was very slow when he was going

:37:22. > :37:32.

:37:32. > :37:36.into the pit. Maybe that is down change issues. We can see how this

:37:36. > :37:46.unravels. It was the down should problem that slowed Mark Webber

:37:46. > :38:03.

:38:03. > :38:13.race. We are only on lap 21. The safety car is out. The safety car

:38:13. > :38:15.

:38:15. > :38:20.will now pick up. Felipe Massa leads the Grand Prix. He's coming

:38:20. > :38:23.in, Felipe Massa has pitted. He gets his free stop. Presumably he

:38:23. > :38:30.will lose track position to Vettel, as he comes through the last

:38:30. > :38:40.chicane. Massa, a big board to say turn in here, everybody is waiting

:38:40. > :38:47.

:38:47. > :38:54.for you, pleased to see you. Massa rejoins that rather curious pit

:38:54. > :39:01.lane. Card cross the white line. They can't just nail it now. They

:39:01. > :39:06.have to do a required speed. That so the drivers are not encouraged,

:39:06. > :39:09.when there is an incident on track, they are not encouraged to nail it

:39:09. > :39:14.back to the pits. That means the safety car spends a long time

:39:14. > :39:22.picking them up. Smart thinking by Red Bull. Michael Schumacher

:39:22. > :39:25.fancies another go on the wets. He's handed back the shallow groove

:39:25. > :39:30.into media Hizb Ut-Tazir. I'm driving me is on the Pirelli test

:39:30. > :39:40.cars next week, so I can give you a lot more information on exactly how

:39:40. > :39:43.

:39:43. > :39:53.who has done what. Kobayashi is ahead of Massa. Its Vettel and

:39:53. > :39:56.

:39:56. > :40:06.Kobayashi. Information, from third to 13 it is undrive the ball. It is

:40:06. > :40:14.

:40:14. > :40:20.section of track. That is from Vettel, saying to the race director,

:40:20. > :40:24.don't restart this raise any time soon. A little trip across the

:40:25. > :40:31.grass. It was be soul-destroying when you can't even stay on the

:40:31. > :40:35.track and the safety car speed limit? You could debate whether

:40:35. > :40:41.it's a good thing to have that safety car out in early or not. We

:40:41. > :40:51.still have all of the car's running. We can see Lewis Hamilton, finally

:40:51. > :41:00.

:41:00. > :41:09.making it back to his pit. Is that did go quite early on to does

:41:09. > :41:13.intermediates, as they are all queued up. Vettel, Kobayashi, Di

:41:13. > :41:18.Resta is sixth. His first visit to this circuit, what a good job he's

:41:18. > :41:26.doing. Challenging conditions in extreme. Fernando Alonso is down in

:41:26. > :41:33.eighth, having run a strong second. De la Rosa, ninth. The man who

:41:33. > :41:40.developed the Pirelli intermediates and wets. An update, so much water

:41:40. > :41:45.that you cannot restart the race like this. For the first car, it is

:41:45. > :41:48.already too dangerous. For the car behind, he doesn't see anything. He

:41:48. > :41:52.goes blind into the water, aquaplaned and smashed the car.

:41:52. > :42:02.Understood, we will pass on that information. His Engineer Committee

:42:02. > :42:06.

:42:06. > :42:11.will not need to pass that reason he is so clear round

:42:11. > :42:14.specific in describing that he thinks it is undrivable, he knows

:42:14. > :42:20.that will be listened to. As the lead car, it's very difficult for

:42:20. > :42:23.the race director to do anything other than leave the safety car out.

:42:23. > :42:29.Health and safety gone mad? You have to take Vettel at face value,

:42:29. > :42:36.on that. At the pretty, it's lap 23 of 70. There is no way he can

:42:36. > :42:41.reasonably expect that safety car to go 70% of the distance, when

:42:41. > :42:48.they could call the race. We can see Charlie Whiting. Maybe a bit

:42:48. > :42:52.camera-shy. But those are the men that will make the call. They have

:42:52. > :42:55.to rely on the drive of the safety car and information from the

:42:55. > :43:01.drivers. The problem they have up there is that every driver in that

:43:01. > :43:04.field, and we have 23 runners, they all have different perspectives

:43:04. > :43:08.depending on where they are in the race, what tyres they have got on

:43:08. > :43:14.and whether they want the race restarted or not. They have to fill

:43:14. > :43:19.the wall of that out somehow. still chucking it down on the pit

:43:19. > :43:22.straight. There is no sign that it's going to clear any time soon.

:43:22. > :43:29.Just the thought of the tread blocks. I've been looking at the

:43:29. > :43:33.tyres when they came in. They actually look OK. Plenty of tread

:43:33. > :43:39.on the full wet tyres. That's how the likes of Kobayashi, Petrova and

:43:39. > :43:44.Di Resta have been able to stay out on track. Those will wear down, and

:43:44. > :43:52.they will have to go into the pits soon a. Thank you for that. So, it

:43:52. > :44:01.worked out well for Vettel in particular. Massa has Kobayashi

:44:01. > :44:06.between him and the race leader. So, more intensity of rain is inspected.

:44:06. > :44:09.He said level two, whatever that is. Presumably that is double two and

:44:09. > :44:13.it's been dropped to Level 1. Kobayashi is in second place, he

:44:13. > :44:17.has not stopped at any time. He hasn't come in for fresh wet. He

:44:17. > :44:21.didn't jump too early and go on to the intermediates. Button and

:44:21. > :44:29.company were definitely showing that it was the right tyres to be

:44:29. > :44:32.on. The weather forecast was more important than the tyre choice.

:44:32. > :44:39.Sorry, I was try to do some research while you were in

:44:39. > :44:44.detaining the audience. I didn't believe -- bully catches. --

:44:44. > :44:51.entertaining the audience. We are hearing that Sutil was still the

:44:51. > :44:56.intermediates, which is entertaining. The run-up to the

:44:56. > :45:01.hairpin? You just can't see anything at all. OK, we understand.

:45:01. > :45:11.We will pass that on to raise control. Jenson, we are expecting

:45:11. > :45:14.

:45:14. > :45:20.20 more minutes of this intensity delivering a message. Jenson Button

:45:20. > :45:27.in tenth place and if he is complaining, up like a race leader,

:45:27. > :45:34.it is very unlikely... It is looking to be getting heavier now.

:45:34. > :45:38.That is Jenson's engineer, and looking out of the window, when

:45:38. > :45:45.they put the safety car out there, it looked perfectly acceptable,

:45:45. > :45:51.didn't it? But it has spread across the entire 2.7 miles of this semi-

:45:51. > :45:57.permanent racetrack. It is in road around the casino, some of it is

:45:57. > :46:02.racetrack and the rest is used all the year round. Any thought they

:46:02. > :46:10.might throw up a red and just a pit for a while? That is a possibility

:46:10. > :46:16.with this level of rain. You could argue... Red flag! I responded to

:46:16. > :46:23.your information! I should do the lottery, shouldn't I? I might be

:46:23. > :46:27.able to win something. It is a red flag situation. And we will now go

:46:28. > :46:34.through that procedure that we saw two weeks ago in Monaco where they

:46:34. > :46:38.have to have at least a 10 minute notice of a restart. The race is

:46:38. > :46:44.effectively suspended. They are not allowed into the pit lane or they

:46:44. > :46:50.will get aches -- get a penalty. The cars can be worked on the grid.

:46:50. > :46:54.They have to go to pole position and line-up in race order. Any in

:46:54. > :46:57.the next get pulled over to the side of the grid and will be

:46:57. > :47:04.released early to go round and joined the back of the queue when

:47:04. > :47:14.we get the restart. Hundreds of mechanics with equipment out on to

:47:14. > :47:14.

:47:14. > :47:22.the grid. They can change a tyre -- they can change tyres. A red flag

:47:22. > :47:29.situation is usually bad weather, isn't it? What never fails to amaze

:47:29. > :47:34.me in these situations is how few of them ever have a raincoat! It

:47:34. > :47:40.comes as a big surprise you have wet weather and Formula One! They

:47:40. > :47:45.are covered in fireproof overalls that will gather wait outside. The

:47:45. > :47:51.safety car will bring them to the red flag blind and they have to

:47:51. > :47:58.line up in single file. Not quite doing that. The drive has do not

:47:58. > :48:03.always know the rules, they are quite complex -- the drivers.

:48:03. > :48:08.Sebastian Vettel positioning himself right on it. The race is

:48:08. > :48:13.suspended. Eddie Jordan, what do you think? There is no doubt about

:48:13. > :48:17.the safety aspect of stopping the race because the rain was

:48:17. > :48:22.torrential. Mike issue is that I really have an issue with the way

:48:22. > :48:30.the race was started -- might issue. I cannot believe we started with a

:48:30. > :48:36.safety car, it stole the excitement of a race into the first corner in

:48:36. > :48:41.those conditions. I do not accept this race should have been started

:48:41. > :48:45.on the safety car. It is different when you are in the car but if you

:48:45. > :48:51.are going to have the opportunity of pulling a fast one bike we used

:48:51. > :48:58.to do in the past, I have a concern about the way it is done -- a fast

:48:58. > :49:06.one look like we used to do. Maybe you can put your letters of

:49:06. > :49:16.complaint in the same envelope and save on the postage?! It looks like

:49:16. > :49:18.

:49:18. > :49:25.different levels of carbon on the cart off Sebastian Vettel. -- car.

:49:25. > :49:29.What they might do is put a third set on and take those off, but but

:49:29. > :49:37.you do not want to heat them too long because the rubber will start

:49:37. > :49:41.to cure. It does, but they will only have put those on ahead of the

:49:41. > :49:45.race. Just down at the Red Bull garage, it seems as though they

:49:45. > :49:50.listened to Sebastien, it was like he was giving an interview on the

:49:51. > :49:56.radio about conditions. The it is just too dangerous, it is right to

:49:56. > :50:01.stop the race. The drivers are passengers, at the water picks up

:50:01. > :50:07.the car and an accident is so easy, so absolutely the right thing to

:50:07. > :50:15.stop the race. Was it right to start the race on a safety car?

:50:15. > :50:22.so if the cast a doubt a long time to give the driver's chance -- the

:50:22. > :50:26.safety car started a long time in. It was the right thing to do. By do

:50:26. > :50:32.not ask this often in the middle of the race, how is the race going --

:50:32. > :50:37.I do not. We had an issue with Mark with the downshift, so they changed

:50:37. > :50:42.the wheel as a precaution. Up until then, we were looking pretty

:50:42. > :50:47.comfortable looking after the tyres and monitoring the weather. But

:50:47. > :50:52.unfortunately, the satellite was right and the rain is heavy. What

:50:52. > :50:57.did not say about Lewis and his move? We did not hear too much from

:50:57. > :51:04.him, but it was obvious he was a complete passenger on the replay. I

:51:04. > :51:11.am sure it was the right thing, but Lewis and Ben had another accident,

:51:11. > :51:21.unfortunately. Back to Martin. We heard somebody saying they are

:51:21. > :51:22.

:51:22. > :51:27.not in the right order on the grid. They should be in a line, I think.

:51:27. > :51:33.Knows sign of a safety car we start -- there is no sign. They have to

:51:33. > :51:42.start now under the safety car. is significantly better than when

:51:42. > :51:47.they started and looking at the chicane, the apex of the last

:51:47. > :51:57.chicane is completely submerged with water. It does not look like

:51:57. > :51:59.

:51:59. > :52:09.there is more drainage capability. And we are on an island! It is the

:52:09. > :52:09.

:52:10. > :52:15.first time the race has been rain- 2,000, it was last rain affected.

:52:15. > :52:19.It is unusual to see a red flag these days. The safety car covers

:52:19. > :52:29.just about everything, but we have seen the situation for two

:52:29. > :52:31.

:52:31. > :52:35.consecutive races. This track is no stranger, we have had in 19 safety

:52:35. > :52:45.car recently. People will understand, these are the best

:52:45. > :52:49.drivers, why or are they not out there? These cars are just not

:52:49. > :52:52.designed to drive in these conditions. And you get a

:52:52. > :52:59.separation or no separation between them -- between the wooden plank

:52:59. > :53:04.below the chassis and the ground. And as difficult as it is to have

:53:04. > :53:10.safety cars without incidents, it is the right and safer decision, it

:53:10. > :53:14.is no question. We can hardly see be on the end -- be on the edge of

:53:14. > :53:24.the circuit, it is so great and we have to hope that this picks up

:53:24. > :53:28.

:53:28. > :53:31.wind and takes this horrible weather away. -- grey. We are

:53:31. > :53:36.waiting for a 10 minute warning they will go into a safety car

:53:36. > :53:44.process. It does not look like it will happen soon. Only eight teams

:53:44. > :53:49.are allowed down there at the moment -- the teams.

:53:49. > :53:54.Disappointed to be talking to you at the moment, what happened?

:53:54. > :54:01.Tricky conditions, and was doing the best I could to keep the Kop on

:54:01. > :54:04.track and I think I had pretty good pace. -- keep the car. Fire --

:54:05. > :54:10.Jenson and made a mistake in the last corner and I got the one on

:54:10. > :54:14.him. I was on the outside. I have not seen the footage but it looked

:54:14. > :54:21.like I was halfway on the outside of him and he kept moving across. I

:54:21. > :54:27.do not know if he saw me, but I was in the wall. And it was a leave the

:54:27. > :54:33.tyre that was damaged so I had to drive it back to the damage -- and

:54:33. > :54:40.it was the tyre that was damaged so I had to drive it back to the

:54:40. > :54:50.garage. Dense and did say on his radio, what is he doing? -- Jenson

:54:50. > :54:50.

:54:50. > :55:32.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:55:32. > :55:42.Button. Explain how difficult What do you do, stay and watch the

:55:42. > :55:50.race? I support the team and hope that we can get a good result for

:55:50. > :56:00.Jenson and at least. Well done for getting that interview. Denser is

:56:00. > :56:01.

:56:01. > :56:11.in tenth place -- Jenson that. It drive-through penalty for the

:56:11. > :56:12.

:56:12. > :56:21.safety car and back on before the race.. Adrian Sutil did not change

:56:21. > :56:27.tyres, so he cannot change them free of charge on the grid.

:56:27. > :56:37.Originally, we expected 20 minutes of this. We will get a 10 minute

:56:37. > :56:41.

:56:41. > :56:45.warning when this happens. That was the physiotherapist for the team.

:56:45. > :56:50.But was Mark Webber's race engineer giving him information and

:56:51. > :56:55.reminding him of the ten-minute countdown. Back to Lewis's

:56:55. > :56:59.interview. You do not always remember the sequence of events. I

:56:59. > :57:03.do not recall he was halfway alongside Jenson Button at the

:57:03. > :57:07.point of contact, it looked like he was just alongside his wheels. I do

:57:07. > :57:14.not know if I would want to share my chocolate with him, if that is

:57:14. > :57:24.what he thinks! Presumably, he was coming out at a vast a rate and is

:57:24. > :57:33.entitled to overtake. This is a replay in presumably of the start

:57:33. > :57:38.of the race. And when it starts and the safety car begins immediately,

:57:38. > :57:48.at the green light go on and there is no formation, you get straight

:57:48. > :57:52.into it. This is a replay of that action. And that is the safety car.

:57:52. > :57:57.He led the six the highest number of laps last year into a Grand Prix

:57:57. > :58:03.race and. And when they got rid of the safety car on the start coming

:58:03. > :58:09.here. And Mark Webber gave Lewis Hamilton a more than enough space.

:58:09. > :58:16.Lewis said he got on the kerb, but he just slid off it. And I think he

:58:16. > :58:25.would have taken a penalty had he not dropped out of the race. Mack

:58:25. > :58:31.he was left in a lot of space. -- he was left a lot of space. And

:58:31. > :58:36.Lewis Hamilton is almost onto the grass, it has no old brick.

:58:36. > :58:42.Sebastian Vettel had an early lead in the Grand Prix and by goodness.

:58:42. > :58:48.This is the contact. The men on the pit board having to react, and that

:58:48. > :58:55.was hit by McLaren. That is a broken wheel, but the team saw it

:58:55. > :59:05.as a broken suspension. Lewis got out and said it was only a quick

:59:05. > :59:08.

:59:08. > :59:18.better run at it. Jenson Button would be the first man to come

:59:18. > :59:19.

:59:19. > :59:26.out... This is Mark Webber taking a position from Vitaly Petrov, and

:59:26. > :59:33.passing the second, Nick Heidfeld. Intermediates go on if Ferrari. And

:59:33. > :59:38.that turned out to be a very bad mistake. So early on, Fernando

:59:38. > :59:44.Alonso was flying up on those intermediates and this showed up

:59:44. > :59:49.and we had a further safety car situation that quickly turned into

:59:49. > :59:55.a red flag, as the track became so waterlogged it was not safe

:59:55. > :00:01.cruising around behind the safety car. Sooner or later, if you need

:00:01. > :00:11.lateral force to feed the fluids. They are not designed to cruise

:00:11. > :00:17.

:00:17. > :00:22.round. And Ted has found Jonathan for a long time, two McLaren

:00:22. > :00:26.drivers coming together, who is at fault? We are not the first team to

:00:26. > :00:31.have drivers come together and we will not be the last. Obviously,

:00:31. > :00:39.not good for us today, for either driver. We have looked at it and we

:00:39. > :00:44.just think it was a racing incident. Lewis had pace. He was in attacking

:00:45. > :00:50.move. Jenson was holding his line. The rest is history. So Jenson was

:00:50. > :00:54.holding his line? It looked like he was coming across. We will look at

:00:54. > :00:59.it in more detail after the race. I think the final move was the

:01:00. > :01:04.contact they made. It makes it look worse than his. We will do all of

:01:04. > :01:09.that after the race. What do you do with Lewis because this is two

:01:09. > :01:16.races in a row where he has been a bit hot-headed, it seems from the

:01:16. > :01:23.outside. To be fair, but in Monaco to one side, Lewis has driven

:01:23. > :01:29.really well here this weekend. It is extremely difficult conditions

:01:29. > :01:33.here. In the dry we have seen people put it in the wall. These

:01:33. > :01:37.are world-class drivers. We have to remember that this is motor sport,

:01:37. > :01:43.these are guys who want to race and did well and we want to put on a

:01:43. > :01:48.show here. Sitting here going and one behind the other is not what

:01:48. > :01:54.motor sport is about. Butter will not help his championship? That is

:01:54. > :01:57.true. Uncomfortable. It is an open debate about whether the

:01:57. > :02:03.championship is still alive. Tell us what you're expecting with the

:02:03. > :02:08.rain. Charlie will want to look at the surface water. The issue is not

:02:08. > :02:12.just how hard it is coming down but as we saw from this morning with

:02:12. > :02:17.the Ferrari race, the surface water is an issue. The cars aquaplaning

:02:17. > :02:23.here is serious. I think Charlie will want to see the circuit dried

:02:23. > :02:30.out and the surface water ago. I would be very surprised if we are

:02:30. > :02:33.going in 10 minutes. Thank you, Jonathan. Jonathan Neale defending

:02:33. > :02:39.his driver. It does always seemed to be Lewis in the wars, doesn't

:02:39. > :02:43.it? It is the nature of his attacking driving style that AV is

:02:43. > :02:46.not in front, he will work as hard as he can to get there. We have

:02:46. > :02:50.said this before, it is easy to knock someone when they are

:02:50. > :02:55.involved in an incident but that is why he has a big fan base around

:02:55. > :02:59.the world, because of his attacking driving style. That does not mean

:02:59. > :03:03.running into people because there are many manoeuvres he has pulled

:03:03. > :03:08.off which are stunning but at the moment it seems that just as

:03:08. > :03:17.Sebastian Vatel cannot do anything wrong, every turn Hamilton makes,

:03:17. > :03:21.he seems to be running into an accident. It is a bad mood he is in.

:03:21. > :03:27.One in ten of the incidents before this race were achieved by Lewis

:03:27. > :03:33.and there are 24 drivers on the grid so he does weigh more of his

:03:33. > :03:38.share of overtaking which is why he gets in trouble more? Therein lies

:03:38. > :03:43.the frustration that Hamilton has. He believes that hears the best

:03:43. > :03:49.driver in the world and he should be adding multiple world

:03:49. > :03:53.championships to the one he has already, right now, McLaren are

:03:53. > :03:56.working on the car and they have made incredible steps forward, but

:03:56. > :04:01.such is the competitive nature of Formula One, but as they take a

:04:01. > :04:06.step forward, the competition do as well. He is getting frustrated. He

:04:06. > :04:11.wants to win. That desire, that passion is what drives him but it

:04:11. > :04:15.is also what sees him get up close and personal sometimes. But to

:04:15. > :04:19.finish first, you must finish. It is difficult to know. If you were

:04:19. > :04:25.his manager, you would have to be saying, what is the issue here?

:04:25. > :04:30.What have we got to do to stop this happening? It is a very good point.

:04:30. > :04:35.I have never done driver management at except for badly manager myself.

:04:35. > :04:41.I would be saying, Gill, enjoy. If you are a great driver, everyone

:04:41. > :04:46.knows that -- chill. Don't try and force it. You cannot get a square

:04:46. > :04:51.peg into a round hole. If the car is only good enough to finish

:04:51. > :04:54.second this time, you can still be the team leader. You need to

:04:55. > :04:59.concentrate on beating your team- mate, not running into him. I'm not

:04:59. > :05:04.saying that he did that, it was a racing incident. You have to take

:05:04. > :05:09.the big picture. Today, it may not be 70 laps but you have to keep the

:05:09. > :05:15.race distance. Team principal Christian Horner wandering around

:05:15. > :05:20.under that umbrella. I do not think that race will start any time soon.

:05:20. > :05:24.The clock does stop under the red flag so we have an hour and 40

:05:24. > :05:27.minutes of potential racing left. It will be a long afternoon. Lewis

:05:27. > :05:32.Hamilton said he would stay around and try and help the team and

:05:32. > :05:37.indeed he has. Meanwhile, Lee McKenzie has found Paul di Resta.

:05:37. > :05:41.Paul, tell us how difficult conditions are out there. Extremely.

:05:41. > :05:45.It seemed to happen at one end of the track and then it continued. I

:05:45. > :05:49.thought there would be a red flag much sooner than it was. The

:05:49. > :05:53.conditions were atrocious. I think it will take a long time before we

:05:53. > :05:58.start to run again. Maybe we will run for quite a bit under the

:05:58. > :06:03.safety car. If should it have been started under the safety car?

:06:03. > :06:07.because of the visibility, I would have said. This time we will be

:06:07. > :06:13.running round a long time to clear the water before they events --

:06:13. > :06:20.before they even think about restarting.

:06:20. > :06:23.That is a very good point. You would not want to sit in an

:06:23. > :06:27.aircraft when the pilot cannot see the runway so why would we expect

:06:27. > :06:34.these guys to race on the track they cannot see? They have to be

:06:34. > :06:38.the best judge. You have to say, so far, that have not been any

:06:38. > :06:44.aquaplaning or crashers apart from Lewis not being in this race, so

:06:44. > :06:53.far there has been an incident free Grand Prix. Technically, they can

:06:53. > :06:58.stop the race. We have seen them lifting drain covers to get rid of

:06:58. > :07:04.the water. We have done less than 75 % of race distance. They could

:07:04. > :07:09.call a halt to it. I do not think they will for some time yet but it

:07:09. > :07:17.is not out of the question. The clock stops. The Grand Prix is the

:07:17. > :07:27.nearest complete lap over 300 kilometres or two hours. Of course,

:07:27. > :07:32.it is whichever arrives first. That is them trying to clear the water

:07:32. > :07:40.which loiters. It is an old style track. It has lots of bumps and

:07:40. > :07:43.what have you. It is hilarious, the marshal unfortunately is pushing

:07:43. > :07:50.the water uphill and standing looking confused when it runs back

:07:50. > :07:55.in. It looks like the rain will intensify again before it calms

:07:55. > :08:01.down. I do not think we will go anywhere for the next 20 minutes at

:08:01. > :08:06.least and we will get 10 minutes' warning. Go and have lunch or

:08:06. > :08:16.something, relax and take your time. I think Rocky is absolutely right

:08:16. > :08:21.

:08:21. > :08:26.on that one. Mrs Liuzzi. -- This is a Liuzzi. He was running 17th. Only

:08:26. > :08:32.one retirement which was Lewis Hamilton. The other 23 are very

:08:32. > :08:37.much in the race but the problem is, we do not have a race at the moment.

:08:37. > :08:47.Vettel leads from Kobayashi, Massa third, Heidfeld fourth, Petrov

:08:47. > :08:48.

:08:48. > :08:55.fifth, di Resta or sixth,. Delirious his ninth, standing in

:08:55. > :09:00.for Sergio Perez. That is a hi-tech piece of kit. A million quid's

:09:00. > :09:10.worth of Formula One suspended on bat. I guess it is doing the job

:09:10. > :09:11.

:09:11. > :09:16.done just about. Button is tenth. He has had two pit stops. Rosberg

:09:16. > :09:23.11th, Schumacher 12 for Mercedes. They paid a heavy price for going

:09:23. > :09:29.on to the intermediates. So did Button. Sutil stayed on

:09:29. > :09:36.intermediates. He is 13. Alguersuari 14. Glock is 15. Rubens

:09:36. > :09:46.Barrichello 16th, and Tonio Liuzzi doing a good job for his spine in

:09:46. > :09:56.

:09:56. > :10:02.pitted once. D'Ambrosio is 23rd and last. The one retirement is Lewis

:10:02. > :10:06.Hamilton. They try to keep the water out of the cockpit but when

:10:06. > :10:14.you are sitting in these things, plenty of water starts coming

:10:14. > :10:20.through the car. Yes, there have holes to allow electrical cables to

:10:20. > :10:24.pass survey for up pretty quickly. How would you fancy sitting in a

:10:24. > :10:34.KERS energised car, driving through puddles? I do not think I would

:10:34. > :10:39.

:10:39. > :10:48.fancy that. Maybe Michael is getting some tips there on rally

:10:48. > :10:52.driving, how to handle drift. Sadly, for our viewers, this looks like it

:10:52. > :10:57.may take some time before we have any more racing taking place here

:10:57. > :11:05.this afternoon. Do stick with us if you can. We are expecting this race

:11:05. > :11:09.to get back under way. We are hearing it will rain hard again.

:11:09. > :11:12.This guy does not look too clever. You can just about see the

:11:12. > :11:20.television helicopter in a low hover. That must be a scary place

:11:21. > :11:25.to be. Maybe we should clarify for anyone seeing Lewis's car going

:11:25. > :11:30.back to the pits, you cannot work on the car because if you remember

:11:30. > :11:34.back in Nurburgring in 2007, they changed the rules after he sat in a

:11:34. > :11:40.car and got lifted back. They will take the car back but he will not

:11:40. > :11:48.be taking any further part. Ted, are you getting rusty down there?

:11:48. > :11:52.Yes, very wet and my trousers are very sudden. I went down to McLaren

:11:52. > :11:56.and when they saw the shot of the recovery truck making its way at

:11:56. > :12:00.high speed around the chicane, they were wincing because they could see

:12:01. > :12:06.the car was swaying from side to side. All the bodywork is pretty

:12:06. > :12:10.delicate. They were shouting at the TV, slow down, slow down! I have an

:12:11. > :12:15.answer as to why McLaren told Lewis Hamilton to stop. That is because

:12:15. > :12:19.they believe he did have a suspension failure. They thought it

:12:19. > :12:23.was a wishbone that was broken. It turns out, as Lewis Hamilton

:12:23. > :12:26.believes, it was just the angle of the rubber and the rim would have

:12:26. > :12:31.been Square to the wheel. But they will not know for sure until they

:12:31. > :12:36.get the car back. As I say that, the car is coming back into the pit

:12:36. > :12:41.lane now. I will have a look for myself. They told Lewis to retire

:12:41. > :12:48.because they thought there was suspension damage. There is the

:12:48. > :12:58.stricken McLaren this winning its way back. Occasionally a little tap

:12:58. > :13:00.

:13:00. > :13:04.on the ground to keep it level. If the teams have got a mind switched

:13:04. > :13:13.on and photographers can get pictures of the underneath of the

:13:13. > :13:18.McLaren. And -- industrial espionage goes on. When Red Bull

:13:18. > :13:24.crashed, a photographers would have been straight on to that and they

:13:24. > :13:32.would have tried to cover up the car quickly. We just sort Nick

:13:32. > :13:39.Heidfeld. I am managing to pronounce his name correctly! They

:13:39. > :13:48.have made some good progress. They have not stopped so far. They are

:13:48. > :13:58.on their first set of wets from the start of the Grand Prix. They can

:13:58. > :14:03.now change tyres. Kobayashi is up to second because he did not stop.

:14:03. > :14:05.It shows the difference in budget. We saw the Virgin mechanics

:14:05. > :14:10.huddling under cover getting progressively more wet and the

:14:10. > :14:19.teams who have more budget come with a pop-up tent. They will get

:14:19. > :14:23.the barbecue out next. I have never seen that before. Emerson

:14:23. > :14:29.Fittipaldi, the fourth steward, the driver representative this weekend.

:14:29. > :14:34.He is a cool dude. He has been there, seen it, won it, crashed it.

:14:34. > :14:43.Ted is down having a look at the bouncing McLaren of Lewis Hamilton.

:14:43. > :14:49.Yes, both the runs on the left-hand side, they are just taking it off

:14:49. > :14:52.now, both the runs on the left-hand side of the car are complete write-

:14:52. > :14:57.offs. The mechanics are having a look at the back of the car now, as

:14:57. > :15:01.is Jonathan Neill and Lewis Hamilton. It does not look like the

:15:01. > :15:09.suspension arms are into bad condition. The harbour actually

:15:09. > :15:14.seems solid. They will start giving it a close inspection. Actually, I

:15:14. > :15:20.can see a drive shaft at a strange angle. I think there may be further

:15:20. > :15:24.damage but I will keep my eyes on it. I am not sure. The mechanic is

:15:24. > :15:29.looking and pointing to Lewis and saying it does not look right. It

:15:29. > :15:39.looks like there was further damage which would have made Lewis

:15:39. > :15:41.

:15:41. > :15:47.Hamilton's rejoining the race stop the car. And when you break a

:15:47. > :15:57.whim, there is a chance to have damaged a wheel bearing. This is

:15:57. > :15:58.

:15:58. > :16:04.Lewis Hamilton's race. This is on the restart. The first time that

:16:04. > :16:10.the safety car has gone in. Fernando Alonso and Sebastian

:16:10. > :16:19.Vettel squabbling over first place. Lewis Hamilton comes alongside the

:16:19. > :16:24.inside of Mark Webber. And Lewis Hamilton goes into the side of Mark

:16:24. > :16:28.Webber. I think he might have taken a penalty for that. The steward

:16:28. > :16:34.asks, have you caused an avoidable accident? Having made it through

:16:34. > :16:39.the most difficult part, stopping the car for the first apex, we can

:16:39. > :16:44.see the footage as he gets the run of that last chicane. He is not

:16:44. > :16:49.looking to be in a position to slip past Mark Webber but makes a braver

:16:49. > :16:55.move and goes for the inside. Marks Tote -- Mark turns away and gives

:16:55. > :17:02.him space and Lewis get on that inside kerb. And you unload those

:17:02. > :17:06.inside wheels and he slid in to mark. I would say it was a racing

:17:06. > :17:13.incident and Mark Webber would say, had he not touched me, I would not

:17:13. > :17:19.have had to spin round. What does Mark Webber do when he sees Lewis

:17:19. > :17:26.Hamilton a long the inside? He turns round the corner and he did

:17:26. > :17:32.not retain a weight -- turn away, it has to be said. So by definition,

:17:32. > :17:37.a causing an avoidable incident, I think he probably would have.

:17:37. > :17:46.a matter of interpretation, like any referee decision. This is with

:17:46. > :17:52.Michael Schumacher down into turn three. They would get pretty close

:17:52. > :17:57.a bit later down in the hairpin. Schumacher has gone defensive, but

:17:57. > :18:04.looking more at Nico Rosberg. And Jenson Button is wide on the

:18:04. > :18:09.outside. Hamilton... Hamilton drives up the inside of him. A

:18:09. > :18:15.dismal afternoon for Jenson Button, but at least he is still in the

:18:15. > :18:19.race in tenth place. Lewis has lost his left front trying not to hit

:18:19. > :18:24.Schumacher, Schumacher squeezed him. In fairness, you are not allowed to

:18:24. > :18:28.make an additional move in the braking zone. So technically,

:18:28. > :18:33.Michael has decided to be on the right as he breaks into that corner.

:18:33. > :18:36.The way the rules are written in the code of conduct, Michael has

:18:36. > :18:41.made a secondary move in the braking zone, so the risk could

:18:41. > :18:46.argue had he not moved over, he would not have been pushed off the

:18:46. > :18:50.circuit. This was not investigated. Jenson Button is slow off the last

:18:50. > :19:00.corner he and is looking into his mirror. I would like to see that

:19:00. > :19:00.

:19:01. > :19:05.again, actually. Just check and see if Jenson was looking left in his

:19:05. > :19:11.mirror. So he is very slow and Lewis says he came off the corner

:19:11. > :19:16.much better than him. Jenson is on the normal racing line, you do

:19:16. > :19:22.swing left because it is quite a severe right into the pit straight.

:19:22. > :19:30.I want to see the straight-ahead position and watch and see...

:19:30. > :19:34.Berries. You wonder why Lewis did not recognise he was driving into a

:19:34. > :19:38.wedge. He pulls out and hit the kerb, he gets his front wheel

:19:38. > :19:44.alongside him and Jenson Button gets across. The camera angle we

:19:44. > :19:48.saw from the external shot, look at Michael... Michael has come down

:19:48. > :19:54.that side of the grid and Jenson was going to that side of the grid

:19:54. > :19:59.and looking into his mirror. But look at Michael, Jenson goes to

:19:59. > :20:07.that point, so has not taken an unusual line. I want to see that

:20:07. > :20:12.again, because she were talking! I want to show you something. Just

:20:12. > :20:19.look at Jenson in the straight- ahead position. This is into the

:20:19. > :20:26.last corner. He is looking left, clearly looking laughed. He does

:20:27. > :20:32.know Lewis is there, he has come at home quicker than expected. -- come

:20:32. > :20:37.at him quicker. There is no doubt about it, he was looking in his

:20:37. > :20:46.left hand mirror, and that was the end result. And we are hearing from

:20:46. > :20:51.Ted a drive shaft issue. Still raining cats and dogs at the moment.

:20:51. > :20:56.McLaren are wanting to clean that car up. They want to send it back

:20:56. > :21:03.to Europe tonight. This is the only race in North America now, but that

:21:03. > :21:08.looks like a never ending task. Racetracks are not crowned in the

:21:08. > :21:16.middle where water it runs down both sides, they either go one way

:21:16. > :21:26.or the other. There is a different type of layout. They are all

:21:26. > :21:28.

:21:28. > :21:38.looking. There is a delegate looking at the inside of the last

:21:38. > :21:41.

:21:41. > :21:45.chicane. There is no let-up in the rain. As you analysing the incident

:21:45. > :21:55.between Jenson and Lewis -- as you were analysing the incident between

:21:55. > :21:55.

:21:55. > :22:01.Jenson and Lewis, there was an image of a Rihanna! She has been

:22:01. > :22:11.playing in Montreal and has come to see what the street parties are

:22:11. > :22:12.

:22:13. > :22:19.about four Formula One. With her on Borrello! -- umbrella! Indeed!

:22:19. > :22:25.are they talking about? They have got it under control. If the race

:22:25. > :22:31.was called, it would be the third shortest race in the history of

:22:31. > :22:41.Formula One and Sebastian Vettel would lead by 155 1/2 points, a

:22:41. > :22:41.

:22:41. > :22:49.commentator's nightmare! Hamilton and would have 85 and Mark Webber

:22:49. > :22:56.82. Fernando Alonso would be 5th on 71 for Ferrari. Over to Ted. What

:22:56. > :23:01.does the radar say? It says whatever you want more or less! The

:23:01. > :23:05.rain should already have eased, but look around, it does not look like

:23:05. > :23:13.that. Let's hope we can we start the race because I think it is

:23:13. > :23:19.going to still be very long, but of course we had an unfortunate moment

:23:19. > :23:23.with Fernando. We opted for the intermediate, which looked very

:23:23. > :23:30.quick. To be honest, at the beginning of the race, it was

:23:30. > :23:35.perfect for intermediate and not for extreme, so we tried another

:23:35. > :23:41.option. But then the rain at which was expected even earlier and was

:23:41. > :23:51.not coming, then all of a sudden it came very strong. And with the red

:23:51. > :23:56.flag, even the chance to have the other cars going behind Fernando,

:23:56. > :24:04.faded away. Let's wait and see because I think it could still

:24:04. > :24:07.happen. We just had some team radio talking about the safety car, and

:24:07. > :24:15.whether they will carry on behind the safety car if the race is

:24:15. > :24:19.started. Talking to the team manager, reminding him of the

:24:19. > :24:29.regulations that after a red flag situation, at the race has

:24:29. > :24:37.restarted behind the safety car. Second-placed Forde Kamui Kobayashi,

:24:37. > :24:44.buried deep inside his Sauber -- second place for. You need the seat

:24:44. > :24:49.to be extra tight. I did not like sitting in a car too long because

:24:49. > :24:56.she would get pins and needles when your muscles were not working.

:24:56. > :25:03.he is not the tallest of drivers so probably plenty of space! What is

:25:03. > :25:10.Christian going to look at? You have to walk around. I have never

:25:10. > :25:20.seen a track that wept when a boat could come down! That was in dry

:25:20. > :25:24.

:25:24. > :25:31.dock this morning! You can see the wonderful car park for the media!

:25:31. > :25:37.And another problem with Lewis Hamilton's car, we are hearing.

:25:37. > :25:43.am sure the crowd are getting excited. But you have got to feel

:25:43. > :25:48.for this great fan base they have here in North America. We have had

:25:48. > :25:55.for grandstands and spectators from Thursday, so they really get behind

:25:55. > :26:02.this race. As my wife has reminded me. The spectators over here do not

:26:02. > :26:09.normally see wet races, they normally cancel until the next day.

:26:09. > :26:15.Formula One does race in the rain, but not enough, unfortunately. We

:26:15. > :26:19.are in Austin next year this time for the inaugural Grand Prix where

:26:19. > :26:27.it has been 41 centigrade and date to 1% humidity this week. So that

:26:27. > :26:36.would be slightly different -- 81% humidity. This is quite interesting

:26:36. > :26:43.for birdwatchers. Do you know the species? That looks like the Red

:26:43. > :26:48.shouldered blackbird! Excellent! Somebody praying that the race will

:26:48. > :26:55.start, I think. Michael Schumacher terribly relaxed, he is in 12th

:26:55. > :27:01.place. And he knows they will get plenty of warning, a 10 minute

:27:02. > :27:07.warning, when the race is going to start. Over the years, he lost to

:27:07. > :27:17.stand and have a good chat! He has that guy back into a corner! There

:27:17. > :27:18.

:27:18. > :27:24.is no escape! The crowd came well prepared, they have all got sheets.

:27:24. > :27:29.Better prepared than the track, by the looks of it. And you can see

:27:29. > :27:39.what I mean about the track. You get a water up laying across the

:27:39. > :27:44.surface. A Formula One car at speed is running about 5 mm for a quarter

:27:44. > :27:52.of an inch above the surface of the racetrack, -- or insert -- or a

:27:52. > :27:58.quarter of an inch. There is a big drop that comes and that is why

:27:58. > :28:04.they are not designed to run through very deep water. Wet tyre

:28:04. > :28:09.queen macro will clear 60 litres per second of water. -- wet tyres.

:28:09. > :28:14.But if the car is on the surface, the underneath of the chassis, the

:28:14. > :28:21.driver simply is not in control of it. He is in a boat he has no

:28:21. > :28:27.control over rather than a racing car. A lot of activity going on. No

:28:27. > :28:37.real improvement is expected for about another 15 minutes. 17

:28:37. > :28:37.

:28:37. > :28:43.minutes. I am sure everyone is curious to know if I was right

:28:43. > :28:52.about the bird. We have had people saying that it is a red Wind

:28:52. > :28:58.blackbird. Do birds have shoulders? What was I thinking?! They do now!

:28:58. > :29:06.Only 20 minutes of racing so far in the 46 minutes this race has been

:29:06. > :29:12.going. Sorry about this at home! We want to try and restart this race.

:29:12. > :29:18.We wanted to give you a great show and it was fascinating while it was

:29:18. > :29:23.running. The grey shouldered seagull! They are loving it. And I

:29:23. > :29:29.bet they have not even paid for his seat, Bernie Ecclestone will not be

:29:29. > :29:36.happy with that! I have not seen many come out in the rain before,

:29:36. > :29:41.so I am not sure why they have come to the racetrack. A lack of noise,

:29:41. > :29:46.I would imagine! And this is probably the home as we are on an

:29:46. > :29:52.island in the middle of the sea way! And as we saw with that ship

:29:52. > :29:58.passing close by, you have the rowing lake from the 1976 Olympics,

:29:58. > :30:03.and that is how a lot of corporate guests get into the corporate area.

:30:03. > :30:13.And how we get to the television compound. Up we go underneath the

:30:13. > :30:30.

:30:30. > :30:34.casino after that TV compound. We and helmet covers, impressive. Soap,

:30:34. > :30:40.d'Ambrosio who is running 23rd and last, it has to be said at the

:30:40. > :30:50.moment. He was allowed into the race even though he did not make

:30:50. > :30:53.the 107 the central yesterday. -- 107 % rule. So, as they try to

:30:53. > :30:59.clear away the standing water, let's remind ourselves what did

:30:59. > :31:04.happen during the 20 minutes of racing we have seen so far. This is

:31:04. > :31:09.the start behind the safety car. Controversial. Lewis said they did

:31:09. > :31:14.not need to do it, Paul di Resta said he thought it was too wet.

:31:14. > :31:21.Vettel was complaining about it but he was on pole position and is

:31:21. > :31:27.suited him not to have too many people chasing him. When the safety

:31:27. > :31:31.car came in, we got under way. Alonso very close behind Vettel

:31:31. > :31:37.heading down to the first corner. Great driving there because they

:31:37. > :31:42.would be clueless as to how much grip they could expect. Then we had

:31:42. > :31:52.the contact between Hamilton and Webber which David and I A Greig

:31:52. > :31:53.

:31:53. > :31:58.was Lewis's fault. There we have it that was being investigated. That

:31:59. > :32:06.is how it felt for the Australian. Now, Schumacher or busy looking

:32:06. > :32:11.right at the apex did not see Hamilton. Vettel was leading Ben

:32:11. > :32:19.had a little scamper across the grass and lost nothing, hopefully

:32:19. > :32:25.not too much grass in his radiator. This is the contact between the two

:32:25. > :32:31.McLaren drivers. Lewis told Lee McKenzie that he had a run on him

:32:31. > :32:41.and he did not see him coming. This is the second restart on the safety

:32:41. > :32:48.car. Vettel Getting Away much better this time. The first man in,

:32:48. > :32:56.to try the intermediates, that was the drive through sorry for Button

:32:56. > :33:02.for speeding under the safety car. Mark Webber slithers past Nick

:33:02. > :33:07.Heidfeld. Alonso going on to intermediates. There was a Mercedes

:33:07. > :33:13.behind in doing the same thing. Alonso start slicing through the

:33:13. > :33:18.field on the tyres which were better at that time. And then the

:33:18. > :33:24.heady standing water forced the safety car out yet again. Then they

:33:24. > :33:28.would decide that even at low speed, with a neutralised race, the track

:33:28. > :33:33.was too waterlogged. They needed to work on it so they brought the cars

:33:33. > :33:38.to a halt under the red flag on the start line. Nobody is allowed to go

:33:38. > :33:42.in the pit lane at this time. You will get penalised unless you

:33:43. > :33:48.already in the pit lane. They all on the grid. They can work, cars

:33:48. > :33:55.there. What we are waiting And hoping for is a 10 are warning that

:33:55. > :34:05.there will be a restart there. Sebastian Vettel who is leading the

:34:05. > :34:05.

:34:05. > :34:11.race with 24 laps completed. That is not the racetrack, you will be

:34:11. > :34:16.pleased to know. Vettel is walking back to the pit area where several

:34:16. > :34:26.of the drivers have already gone. The fans still seem to be enjoying

:34:26. > :34:29.

:34:29. > :34:38.themselves regardless. A good effort. A Brazilian flag, a Ferrari

:34:38. > :34:43.flag and the Spanish there as well. Massa and Alonso founds. That is

:34:43. > :34:49.the heavily used Mercedes. There comes a point where they have to

:34:49. > :34:55.top them up with fuel if they start doing too many laps as we saw in

:34:55. > :34:59.Korea last year. Ted Kravitz is that the Williams team. Yes, with

:34:59. > :35:04.the technical director. People are allowed to change their cars now.

:35:04. > :35:13.Have you seen anyone changing torsion bars? You are not allowed

:35:13. > :35:18.to change any part of the car which cannot have the same specification.

:35:18. > :35:24.It regards an article about the weight. They are allowed to do that

:35:24. > :35:28.now for sort you can change tyres, you can replace parts of the same

:35:28. > :35:34.parts that he took off. What did you try to put on? Rubens wanted to

:35:34. > :35:37.go to a softer set up. We had a front roll bar ready. We had a

:35:37. > :35:41.debate with Charlie but we decided to leave it because he has a bit

:35:41. > :35:46.more on his mind now. I will have another chat with him after the

:35:46. > :35:51.race because it is not entirely clear in the technical regulations.

:35:51. > :35:55.Have you put fresh full wet tyres on? Yes, I think the whole grid

:35:55. > :36:00.will do that now. You have a restart from scratch with the grid

:36:00. > :36:05.position as it is. Everyone will try to race to the end on full wets.

:36:05. > :36:11.This rain will continue to this intensity in another 20 to 25

:36:11. > :36:17.minutes. Oh, no. Yes, it is getting quite boring now. We will stay here

:36:17. > :36:21.until it finishes. Until it gets dark? We started the race at 1

:36:21. > :36:26.o'clock Canadian time so there is plenty of light left. So that does

:36:26. > :36:32.not present a team with any problems, you can keep going and

:36:32. > :36:38.going? Yes. Are you on a plane tonight? Probably the same one as

:36:38. > :36:44.you, Ted. It is interesting because there are some regulations,

:36:44. > :36:51.sporting and technical but there are numerous agreements and even

:36:51. > :36:57.still, the team's are having to clarify the regulations, even mid-

:36:57. > :37:00.race, for goodness sake. That is the way it is. I know people were

:37:00. > :37:05.disappointed when the teams were allowed to change tyres and Monaco.

:37:05. > :37:11.You have to cover this scenario as well. If it rains hard, you cannot

:37:11. > :37:17.expect them to start on slick tyres just because you do not warn them

:37:17. > :37:21.to change and a red flag situations. So, David, heavy rain, what is

:37:21. > :37:26.their wettest race you have been in? I think the wettest race I have

:37:26. > :37:32.been in was in 2007 in Fiji, where we spent a long amount of time

:37:32. > :37:39.behind the safety car and visibility was such that once they

:37:39. > :37:44.released the safety car, you could not see. You would be sitting there

:37:44. > :37:52.flat-out, telling yourself no one has spun in front of you. You were

:37:52. > :37:56.doing 180 mph, with no visibility. That is, I can assure you, very

:37:56. > :38:02.uncomfortable. This morning, somebody came with an image to you

:38:02. > :38:07.from the rear-view camera of your car from Adelaide and it was just

:38:07. > :38:12.before Ayrton Senna rammed into the back of you in that where it --

:38:12. > :38:16.very wet Grand Prix. In those days you did race in the wet. It was

:38:16. > :38:21.last man standing. The sport has evolved. I think we have to be on

:38:21. > :38:25.the side of caution. You cannot have cars aquaplaning off the track

:38:25. > :38:30.but you raced in those conditions. How did you feel about it? For yes,

:38:30. > :38:34.you cannot see where you're going. You go with peripheral vision and

:38:34. > :38:39.you listen to the car in front. You dare not lift off the throttle

:38:39. > :38:44.because somebody will going to. You hope nobody crashes in front of it.

:38:44. > :38:47.That was why people paid to see the sport and why they give up time to

:38:47. > :38:52.watch on TV because drivers are doing exceptional things which

:38:53. > :38:57.people think they could not do war would not want to do. It has to be

:38:57. > :39:01.challenging in that respect. I always liken it to you when you on

:39:01. > :39:05.the motorway and you pass a truck in heavy rain and momentarily, your

:39:05. > :39:08.windscreen is obliterated. The windscreen for the strivers as

:39:08. > :39:13.their helmet visor and I have been in situations like that way you

:39:13. > :39:18.cannot even see your own steering wheel or your own cockpit, let

:39:18. > :39:22.alone the car in front of you. Your senses going to hyper mode and you

:39:22. > :39:27.find other ways of recognising where you are on the track. Just

:39:27. > :39:32.before Senna hit me that day, I had done a couple of 360s, scared the

:39:32. > :39:37.life out of me, put it into first gear and realised in Adelaide, I

:39:37. > :39:41.did not know which way I was going, whether I was going with the

:39:41. > :39:46.traffic or against the cars because I had been around so many times.

:39:46. > :39:50.those days, I make it sound like a long time ago, did people think it

:39:50. > :39:56.was madness or did they think it was perfectly acceptable because

:39:56. > :39:59.that was the way it was handle that that time? I remember standing on

:39:59. > :40:03.the grid in that race which I think turned out to be the shortest race

:40:03. > :40:08.of all time because it was not restarted, I remember standing on

:40:08. > :40:13.the grid and Bernie walking down saying, get in a car, the race will

:40:13. > :40:16.start. Alain Prost came into the pits at the end of the lap because

:40:16. > :40:22.he was smarter than we were in that respect. We had travelled halfway

:40:22. > :40:26.around the world, we wanted to go racing. Meanwhile, a man who cannot

:40:26. > :40:31.their racing is Paul di Resta. He is in sixth place and Ted Kravitz

:40:31. > :40:38.has found him. Sixth place, it is looking really good, isn't it?

:40:38. > :40:42.was looking quite well. If I had not made a small mistake, I would

:40:42. > :40:47.probably be in P2 where Kobayashi is. I have not driven up the kind

:40:47. > :40:51.the wet so it is all new. I'm a say the right decision was taken as to

:40:51. > :40:56.how intense this Rainier's. I do not see any of us going anywhere

:40:56. > :41:00.for a long time. Even if it does stop, there are plenty of rivers

:41:00. > :41:04.which a catching us out. Visibility will be poor. It will be

:41:04. > :41:08.interesting to see when the decision is made to take part again.

:41:09. > :41:13.Paul was asking whether David is lost for words and seeing as we

:41:13. > :41:20.have got two Scots here, I will give him my headset and you can ask

:41:20. > :41:23.him a question. Can you hear me, Paul? Yes. It is going well so far,

:41:23. > :41:29.you must be happy with the decision not to have pitied but one of the

:41:29. > :41:34.things you must have mentioned, you were interviewed by the earlier, we

:41:34. > :41:38.were debating whether it was right to have started under the safety

:41:38. > :41:43.car or not -- you were interviewed by Lee McKenzie earlier. What does

:41:43. > :41:48.it feel like not having the visibility? It is quite a scary

:41:48. > :41:51.experience. Most of the track was OK to start. It was the main

:41:52. > :41:57.straight where had difficulty seeing the likes of the car in

:41:57. > :42:01.front, never mind the start lights. I think the right decision was

:42:01. > :42:05.taken. This is the first time we had used Pirelli wet so everyone

:42:05. > :42:11.was in an unknown situation as to how they would perform. This track

:42:11. > :42:14.is pretty slippy, no grip at the best of times. Everybody is set-up

:42:14. > :42:19.no downforce. I do not sit improving too much. The decision

:42:19. > :42:24.will have to be made by the drivers and the FIA a. What about the

:42:24. > :42:30.argument that you are the best drivers in the world, but get out

:42:30. > :42:37.there and show us how you can drive? I said to my engineers but I

:42:37. > :42:41.was disappointed. Our practice start is impressive. Definitely in

:42:41. > :42:45.the future I will look forward to standing starts in the wet. It is

:42:46. > :42:52.the safest route and at the end of the day, there are risks involved.

:42:52. > :42:57.I would definitely agree that the right decision was made. Even the

:42:57. > :43:02.safety cadres -- driver asked us what our decision was. -- safety

:43:02. > :43:07.car driver. The racing lines round here in the wet, you have not been

:43:07. > :43:12.here before, have you had to try a lot of different lines to establish

:43:12. > :43:17.the quickest way or was it intuitive? There are definitely

:43:17. > :43:23.parts of the track where there is more grip than others. One corner

:43:23. > :43:29.in particular, that nearly caught me out was turn five. Not much of a

:43:29. > :43:36.corner, you will know it, David. Olivier Panis broke both his legs

:43:36. > :43:42.at that corner. Even taking caution, I can see everybody is having

:43:42. > :43:49.difficulties. When the water, when there is this much water on the

:43:49. > :43:53.track, you cannot be a passenger. Just one final thing, because I am

:43:53. > :43:57.sure you want to go off and try your feet, was there an error or

:43:57. > :44:04.something which happened which cost to you second place out on the

:44:04. > :44:09.track? It was probably more driver error. I am unsure whether it was a

:44:09. > :44:14.KERS situation whether the KERS had fully charged and you lose the

:44:14. > :44:23.extra braking on the rear. I did ask them to radio back but we are a

:44:23. > :44:27.bit unsure. I think being a bit too aggressive at the beginning. We

:44:27. > :44:31.were looking quite strong and maybe I should have taken more care.

:44:31. > :44:37.Certainly, I hope we can get going again and go forward but there are

:44:37. > :44:41.some pretty quick cars behind us. Thank you, Paul, I thought we might

:44:41. > :44:47.need a translator with you two chatting. Just looking at Twitter

:44:47. > :44:52.and somebody reminding me of the 1994 Suzuka race where I aquaplaned

:44:52. > :44:56.off and hit a marshal and badly broke his leg. It was a horrible

:44:56. > :45:00.accident. I remember running back to help him and the bone of his leg

:45:00. > :45:05.was sticking out of his overalls. I met him a year later and he was

:45:05. > :45:14.still and a bad way. I remember being on the radio crying and

:45:14. > :45:24.shouting at them, this race has to be red flag. In those days,...

:45:24. > :45:27.

:45:27. > :45:32.There is your mate, DC. He has had that race, Nigel Mansell and died

:45:32. > :45:39.were sharing a car and I remember watching as Johnny Herbert came

:45:39. > :45:45.along, lost control on a big puddle, did a 360 and continued without

:45:45. > :45:51.hitting anything. And there was nowhere I would rather have been

:45:51. > :45:55.the than not in a race and car! remember passing a Herbert and

:45:55. > :46:00.something went past my left hand side and it was a car going the

:46:00. > :46:05.wrong way. These cars are not designed to run into each other

:46:05. > :46:10.head on, the crash testing that they do, they are about hitting

:46:10. > :46:17.barriers and not running into each other head on. And we saw in the

:46:17. > :46:25.track guide, you had a coming together. It is just raining, just

:46:25. > :46:29.raining. A lot of internal water they cannot get sorted right now.

:46:29. > :46:39.My personal feeling is no more action for the next 30 minutes, but

:46:39. > :46:40.

:46:40. > :46:50.I will keep you updated. Let's hope he is wrong, but he might be right.

:46:50. > :46:52.

:46:52. > :46:57.Half an hour. A bit late for that, I think! Mark Webber and Sebastian

:46:57. > :47:05.Vettel sharing their experiences. And Lee McKenzie did find Mark

:47:05. > :47:14.Webber. I found him, this is nice! How bad were conditions before it

:47:14. > :47:21.got even worse? Difficult, visibility was one thing and the

:47:21. > :47:26.next thing... It is a difficult finish so it is a track where you

:47:26. > :47:33.do not feel the water has too many options to go places! So it stays

:47:33. > :47:38.on the track. And I think from the hairpin and a few other places, you

:47:38. > :47:41.could see behind the safety car even, at not much to do. How long

:47:41. > :47:47.can they leave it to make a decision whether they will continue

:47:47. > :47:52.Kuyt -- whether to continue? Quite a while, they have nothing to lose,

:47:52. > :47:57.there was no rush. Not ideal for television, but as a sporting event,

:47:57. > :48:01.we can wait here. This is never a deal and then -- on an important

:48:01. > :48:07.day of a race weekend, but we can wait a while, we should try and get

:48:07. > :48:14.the race completed. Indeed, let strike. In the track

:48:14. > :48:21.guide, and -- indeed, we should try. In the track guide, we were looking

:48:21. > :48:25.at it before, we saw that incident. Michael Schumacher ran into the

:48:25. > :48:31.back of you and tried to punch you, he was not happy. That is how they

:48:31. > :48:37.used to sort it out! And that was down to visibility again, the same

:48:37. > :48:45.way Ayrton Senna went into the back of you in Adelaide. He was lapping

:48:45. > :48:49.meet at the time. I was lifting off the throttle to allow him to pass

:48:49. > :48:54.but was not bargaining on the fact he could not see me and he ran into

:48:54. > :48:59.the back of me. What I found quite remarkable was he was able to drive

:48:59. > :49:05.almost as quickly back with three wheels as I could with four. So his

:49:05. > :49:10.talent was definitely at its maximum in those days. That is why

:49:10. > :49:17.he won at 91 of Grand Prix races. Heikki Kovalainen Is lined up 21st

:49:18. > :49:23.at the moment and is with Ted. are you been told? Is the intention

:49:23. > :49:27.to restart the race? If it was not, we would not be waiting for it any

:49:27. > :49:34.more and would be going home, so absolutely. It does not look very

:49:34. > :49:41.good now, but like last year, it might eventually changed. We hope

:49:41. > :49:49.it does so we can go on again. are used to this, do come from

:49:49. > :49:57.Finland! It would be ice in Finland. This is not too bad. It looks as

:49:57. > :50:01.though it is easing up slightly. You expect we could keep going?

:50:01. > :50:06.think you are quite optimistic if you think it is easing off at the

:50:06. > :50:13.moment. It is coming down quite strong still. It is not possible at

:50:13. > :50:20.the moment. But -- in the corners, you could manage, but not in the

:50:20. > :50:26.straight line, the standing water is an issue. It is very dangerous.

:50:26. > :50:32.Let's hope the rain.. If it does, we will be able to go out and will

:50:32. > :50:38.be ready to go out again in the safety car. As I am British, I

:50:38. > :50:42.always have an optimistic view of the weather! Where do you keep your

:50:42. > :50:49.mind right now? You what in the middle of the Grand Prix, how do

:50:49. > :50:55.you stay focused? -- you are in the middle. We chat to the engineers

:50:55. > :51:04.and talk about the race so far. The pit stop that we did was perhaps

:51:04. > :51:11.not the right timing. But the race is still on and hopefully, we can

:51:11. > :51:17.limit the damage or correct the damage. Just fine tune the balance

:51:18. > :51:22.and make a decision about the tyres and the pressure when we get out.

:51:22. > :51:28.And hopefully make the right choice. Thank you for giving us some of

:51:28. > :51:33.your time, and apologies, the sound is difficult as we speak to him

:51:33. > :51:43.through the radio. And that is looking a bit better, David, would

:51:43. > :51:47.

:51:47. > :51:54.you say? I admire your optimism! We have come all the way to see a

:51:54. > :51:59.Grand Prix and let's hope that we are able to. It has been over an

:51:59. > :52:04.hour and a red flag conditions and we feel very much for spectators

:52:04. > :52:12.here and viewers around the world. We are all in the same position. In

:52:12. > :52:19.the same boat. Not in a boat yet, but maybe if Bowater continues! --

:52:19. > :52:27.the water. Are manual work going on the moment. -- a bit of manual work.

:52:27. > :52:36.Not exactly hi-tech. I do not see where the water can go. It is a

:52:36. > :52:40.waterlogged, isn't it? It is, indeed. They are doing their best.

:52:40. > :52:47.That is a cheap shot from that cameraman! Any excuse to get a

:52:47. > :52:54.close-up of Rihanna. I like your one miner, I did not know you liked

:52:54. > :53:04.that music, at you came up with umbrella! You have heard me sink

:53:04. > :53:06.

:53:06. > :53:16.drunk in Karaoke and it is not good! -- sing. I have not had any

:53:16. > :53:18.

:53:18. > :53:23.peers so what I should not inflict this on people! -- beers. Bait used

:53:23. > :53:31.to have a raft racing, that finished in 1991 -- they used to

:53:31. > :53:41.have. Be used to cobble up rafts out of bits and pieces -- be used

:53:41. > :53:48.to. It was quite a big event. was a big event. Very important for

:53:48. > :53:55.Eddie Jordan, he had another victory here at Montreal. We will

:53:55. > :54:01.stay with this, we are hoping for, anticipating a restart. So do stay

:54:01. > :54:05.with us if you can. And we will bring you some entertainment later.

:54:05. > :54:11.Meanwhile, we will poke around the drivers and the teams to try and

:54:11. > :54:17.understand what is going on and why, and when we might see the restart.

:54:17. > :54:23.Jonathan Wheatley, team manager at Red Bull, with his drivers. An

:54:23. > :54:29.unusual place to see a driver on the pit wall, isn't it? And

:54:29. > :54:34.presumably, Sebastian is looking at the weather forecast. I said it is

:54:34. > :54:38.in the middle of the race, I have been in this situation and you have,

:54:38. > :54:45.to make sure that she somehow stayed with the mindset you on in a

:54:45. > :54:49.race. -- that you somehow. You have had a nervous energy and adrenalin

:54:49. > :54:54.building up from first thing in the morning, you see it is raining, and

:54:54. > :54:59.even if you are one of the better wet-weather drivers, you know the

:54:59. > :55:06.risk and potential for accident and injury can go with or against you.

:55:06. > :55:12.So that nervous feeling you get, that is intensified in these

:55:12. > :55:18.conditions. And it is so difficult to come off that high. Rock bottom,

:55:18. > :55:23.and if they do we start this race, be start building up that energy

:55:23. > :55:30.again. -- we start. Even though the physical conditions you are under

:55:30. > :55:35.in wet weather... The G-force underbraking almost halves and

:55:35. > :55:39.reduces significantly, but you are so tired mentally after a wet race

:55:39. > :55:43.because you have to concentrate on the straights. And when you drive

:55:43. > :55:49.in dry weather conditions, you have to relax your body and switch your

:55:49. > :55:53.mind off briefly or it is simply not possible to fully focus for 90

:55:53. > :56:00.minutes around the circuit like this for Monte Carlo where you are

:56:00. > :56:03.literally hitting walls and barriers as you go. A hug for Lewis

:56:03. > :56:09.Hamilton, its luck -- small consolation for the fact he will

:56:09. > :56:14.not take it further part in this Grand Prix. Maybe he will get an

:56:14. > :56:20.impromptu music session going in the McLaren garage. Would you give

:56:20. > :56:30.up a few would Championship points for a hug with Rihanna or! -- World

:56:30. > :56:30.

:56:30. > :57:27.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:57:27. > :57:37.hair day for Rihanna at! You would just be glad to have that much

:57:37. > :57:37.

:57:37. > :57:45.hair! Thank you! So we and his jumping in the cockpit of Lewis

:57:45. > :57:50.Hamilton. -- so Rihanna is jumping. Ted has found another driver.

:57:50. > :57:59.Rihanna had better watch out because the interior of that

:57:59. > :58:05.McLaren was full of water. Down here with a Jerome -- with Jerome

:58:05. > :58:11.d'Ambrosio. What was it like driving? It was very difficult,

:58:11. > :58:19.especially the last sector from turn nine into 10 and into the last

:58:19. > :58:23.chicane. It was just impossible to get the power in third gear, so a

:58:23. > :58:31.good call to stop the race and hopefully it will start to gain.

:58:31. > :58:35.Tell us about that change? It is hard to cope with the water with

:58:36. > :58:41.the extreme on, but with the intermediates, it is impossible.

:58:41. > :58:47.weather update from the team Radio. They say it. Raining within the

:58:47. > :58:51.next 10 minutes, which is good news. The engineer is telling us that.

:58:51. > :58:57.The right decision do you want to wait more for the standing water to

:58:57. > :59:05.dissipate? They have said it. Racing so they will not start again

:59:05. > :59:11.in 10 minutes. We have to wait until they have cleared the track.

:59:11. > :59:18.That is it, because it is too dangerous at the moment. A couple

:59:18. > :59:24.of people in the commentary box, who are they? Jerome d'Ambrosio,

:59:24. > :59:32.other bands available! And we got up in that lovely looking building.

:59:32. > :59:41.Makes me feel like I am at home. And that is the grid. And

:59:41. > :59:45.desperately trying to keep the cars dry it. There is enough energy to

:59:45. > :59:52.kill you, that is why they had danger signs, what do you know

:59:52. > :00:01.about splashing through standing water with the battery pack just

:00:01. > :00:06.behind you? I stopped in 2008, so I have no experience. There was a

:00:06. > :00:11.YouTube clerk of one of the early tests that BMW did at the time and

:00:11. > :00:15.a mechanic getting a bit of a shock. But they are on top of the

:00:15. > :00:21.technology now and the big challenge they have is packaging

:00:21. > :00:25.and housing batteries necessary to store that recovered energy which

:00:25. > :00:30.is harvested through the baking phase -- through the breaking phase.

:00:30. > :00:34.There was talk from the technical director at Williams that under wet

:00:34. > :00:38.conditions, you would not want to use the system because of the brake

:00:38. > :00:43.balance you have to run going through the harvesting phase --

:00:43. > :00:48.harnessing phase. That under rotate the gear axle so they go forward to

:00:48. > :00:52.balance that out and that has a negative effect when you have a

:00:52. > :00:58.really low grip and ring for corners. Glad to see Kamui

:00:58. > :01:01.Kobayashi eventually got out of that car. He wins the award for

:01:01. > :01:11.standing in a stationery Formula One, the longest, they might be a

:01:11. > :01:24.

:01:24. > :01:28.chicane, the kerb but they launch off when they start heading into

:01:28. > :01:32.the wall of champions which is probably the most famous thing

:01:32. > :01:37.about this racetrack. It is to the left-hand side of the red-and-white

:01:37. > :01:41.striped wall which we have seen so many cars going to. You would never

:01:41. > :01:51.know you while in the middle of a load of water. You do not see it

:01:51. > :01:57.from the cockpit of the car. But it is literally an island. Ted has

:01:57. > :02:03.found James Key. Yes, in the Sauber garage. I was interested in the

:02:03. > :02:11.Kobayashi second place. He is in second place and now you can put on

:02:11. > :02:21.a new set? Yes, the tyres were lasting very well. We could see

:02:21. > :02:23.

:02:23. > :02:31.there was some more rain coming. His lap times were good. How long

:02:31. > :02:39.will the wet tyres last? Clearly what, when it starts to dry up,

:02:40. > :02:46.that is when it starts to go off. We will have the driver feed back

:02:46. > :02:52.on when to make the call to change. When or if? Exactly. You could get

:02:52. > :02:57.to the end of the race on this new set of tyres? Maybe. I think hit

:02:57. > :03:00.the track stays as it was, there is a possibility. Week know if they

:03:00. > :03:04.lose enough rubber they will suddenly go off but they looked

:03:04. > :03:10.good enough. What is your information on whether we will get

:03:10. > :03:17.the race started again? We do not have any information at the moment.

:03:17. > :03:27.We know the intensity will stop quite a bit. The track condition is

:03:27. > :03:27.

:03:28. > :03:35.important. He has been sitting in the car for a long time? He was

:03:35. > :03:40.anxious to get going. Have you got any questions, Martin? Yes, I am

:03:40. > :03:43.interested to know what information they were getting back from Kamui

:03:43. > :03:51.Kobayashi on the intermediate says. How did they resist bringing him in

:03:51. > :03:56.and putting the intermediates on? Can you repeat the question? What

:03:56. > :04:03.is fascinating is Alonso and Button, Rosberg and Schumacher, they felt

:04:03. > :04:07.the need to come in and put intermediates on. How to work that

:04:07. > :04:13.with Kamui Kobayashi, not to make the mistake flat with Vettel up

:04:13. > :04:17.front? We have two things we were monitoring. I have not -- we were

:04:17. > :04:22.not held up to much by the Mercedes in front of us. We thought we could

:04:22. > :04:28.make a bit of progress which is what happened. On that basis, with

:04:28. > :04:31.all sticking with it was OK. We watched Button and Barrichello. We

:04:31. > :04:35.could see the into was quicker but we knew some more rain would

:04:36. > :04:44.probably come. We held off and monitored the situation and sure

:04:44. > :04:49.enough the rain came. Massa took a free picked stop effectively. Why

:04:49. > :04:53.lead you choose not to do that. It has gained you a position on the

:04:53. > :04:57.track for the restart. We were talking about the condition of the

:04:57. > :05:03.tyres. The drivers were pretty happy with them. We thought we

:05:03. > :05:08.would stick with it and see how the tyres go with the track condition,

:05:08. > :05:14.there was no obvious evidence of degradation. We took a risk but it

:05:14. > :05:17.worked out. You can answer a question I have been asking

:05:17. > :05:21.Coulthard, about the KERS system and standing water, do they go

:05:21. > :05:27.together? I guess in theory they are not ideal but a lot of effort

:05:27. > :05:32.is put into making the KERS waterproof and safe in all respects.

:05:32. > :05:38.The system on our car is very well sealed up. Obviously, we have to

:05:38. > :05:47.watch it but they are pretty safe devices and I think we should be OK.

:05:47. > :05:52.Thank you very much for that. Let's hope we do get under way. Kobayashi

:05:52. > :05:59.up into second place and Pedro de la Rosa or standing in for Perez is

:05:59. > :06:03.ninth so both Saubers in the top 10. Pedro de la Rosa was the Pirelli

:06:03. > :06:10.test driver say would have developed the intermediates and the

:06:10. > :06:18.wets. They wore to the track and create wet situations to test the

:06:18. > :06:26.tyres. I have done a few of those tests myself, way you normally go

:06:26. > :06:29.out with the two cars. Your team mate will go out on one end of the

:06:29. > :06:33.spectrum, you will go on the other and you will work your way through

:06:33. > :06:37.the course of reward Tring the track and compare notes at the end

:06:37. > :06:42.of the day. Just going back to something James Key said, he said

:06:42. > :06:49.the situation is pretty say. That is not a word you want when you are

:06:49. > :06:53.discussing safety, pretty safe! Let's hope that is all right. We

:06:53. > :06:56.were talking about the amount of electrical energy stored in the

:06:56. > :07:03.KERS system, it is enough to give them an 80 horsepower shove when

:07:03. > :07:10.they hit the Button. Somebody tweeting saying can you afford

:07:10. > :07:13.chairs in the commentary box? Murray Walker used to stand up so -

:07:13. > :07:19.- if it is good enough for Murray Walker it is good enough for David

:07:19. > :07:25.and I. Do you think we will start this race, David? The sun is

:07:25. > :07:31.nowhere to be seen but it does seems to be a bit brighter. There

:07:31. > :07:39.is not as much standing water in the kerbs, down to the last chicane.

:07:39. > :07:46.I really hope that we will have a restart here. Our weatherman Ted

:07:46. > :07:51.Kravitz has an update. I am not aware the man! I don't know if you

:07:51. > :07:55.can see out of the commentary box window, I'm holding a big BBC

:07:55. > :08:00.umbrella and I am now putting it away because it has stopped raining.

:08:00. > :08:04.He is that the crowd cheering for you? I did not think they were

:08:04. > :08:08.cheering at all. Most of the crowd on the pits straight have gone away.

:08:08. > :08:12.There are only about 50 people overlooking the starting grid. I am

:08:13. > :08:19.very pleased to report the rain has stopped and hopefully, my trousers

:08:19. > :08:24.will start to dry out. Thanks, Ted. Do we not get any wind direction

:08:24. > :08:28.and maximum temperatures and anything like that? If you want.

:08:28. > :08:33.Gosh, I'm very conscious that people have tuned in to see a race.

:08:33. > :08:38.The rain has stopped, let's get the race going, come on! You are

:08:38. > :08:43.absolutely right. It is brightening up a treat outside now. We have the

:08:43. > :08:48.vacuum out to clean up the water. They are going for it. They had

:08:49. > :08:52.plenty of ideas or should it rain. The race has not been rain-affected

:08:52. > :08:58.here for 11 years. Although we missed one of those years when we

:08:59. > :09:03.did not race, I think he was 2009. Engines are starting up. We are

:09:03. > :09:07.getting the feel that we might go racing again. There is a window of

:09:07. > :09:11.opportunity here. The rain is coming down slightly. Bass seemed

:09:11. > :09:16.to be getting on top of moving away be standing water. I think that

:09:16. > :09:22.will be enough to allow Charlie Whiting and his team to get a car

:09:22. > :09:26.moving. When you have got all the cars running round, it is

:09:26. > :09:32.dispersing the water. That might give us the opportunity to get some

:09:32. > :09:36.clean laps of racing. They have 23 of the best track quarter cleaners

:09:36. > :09:46.doing nothing at the moment. A Formula One car Hoovers up the

:09:46. > :09:47.

:09:47. > :09:54.water and tries to return it back to the sky. We had the red flag at

:09:54. > :09:58.45 minutes past the hour. It is 10 past three here now. For an hour

:09:58. > :10:04.and 25 minutes we have been under a red flag conditions. Adrian Sutil

:10:04. > :10:10.there who is running 13th on the restart. Did you know that race car

:10:10. > :10:16.spells race car backwards? That is an amazing thing. I am speechless!

:10:16. > :10:26.Where did that come from?! You did not have any notes for that. It was

:10:26. > :10:30.of the top of my head but I thought it was relevant. There is still a

:10:30. > :10:36.lot of standing water. They are used in that very expensive

:10:36. > :10:39.Mercedes Benz to clear puddles basically but that is fine. It was

:10:39. > :10:45.of the racing line but it disperses some more water. We are coming up

:10:45. > :10:51.with as many ways as we can to clear the racetrack. Maybe the

:10:51. > :10:54.spectators could go on the track and have this week as well? This is

:10:54. > :11:03.the long run down to the hairpin where the debt -- drivers were

:11:03. > :11:09.saying it was dangerous. That is Kobayashi with the crazy Austrian.

:11:09. > :11:15.He is a brilliant character. He was then a's trainer and Prost's

:11:15. > :11:19.trainer. I have trained with Joseph and he nearly killed me. That is

:11:19. > :11:23.strange, Pedro de la Rosa or walking with his helmet on. He has

:11:23. > :11:32.been called back to being a Formula One driver for one weekend and he

:11:32. > :11:36.is maximising that opportunity. Sauber dropped him with five races

:11:36. > :11:41.to go last year, they booted him out and all of a sudden, I saw him

:11:41. > :11:46.scampering down the back of the pips with the team manager at

:11:46. > :11:51.Sauber. They borrowed him off McLaren. Can you believe that

:11:51. > :11:56.Sauber turned up here, Gutierrez is their reserve driver, but he was

:18:12. > :18:17.have got two champions and we have seen the battle, is there anything

:18:31. > :18:38.That is what people expect. We have seen many exciting incidents, that

:18:38. > :18:42.is how we run away team. Occasionally, you get this. But for

:18:42. > :18:47.us to safe to one driver to wait behind another is not what we are

:18:47. > :18:53.about and is not what we want, so you have to face the consequences.

:18:53. > :18:58.People will say, what were you thinking about? But I think we have

:19:02. > :19:05.and that is why they want to continue racing each other.

:19:05. > :19:09.applauded Lewis Hamilton for his passion and desire to race on and

:19:09. > :19:17.off the track with things he was saying after Monaco, it was good to

:19:32. > :19:37.car you want it to be at the moment, but just bring the car home, get

:19:37. > :19:42.race finishes under your belt? is difficult. Lewis is an

:19:43. > :19:49.extraordinary driver. How many does he bought off of those? He has got

:19:49. > :19:54.to go out, he tries to raise and overtake. The incident with Mark

:19:54. > :19:58.was investigated. He was cleared of that already and he has got to go

:20:14. > :20:19.that is what the world expects and it is wrong to take that from him.

:20:19. > :20:24.Just a strange few honest, that is we have seen how frustrated he has

:20:24. > :20:30.been up not just this race, at Monaco and beyond, could you see

:20:30. > :20:35.him taking a year out? I cannot. I have known him since he was 11 and

:20:35. > :20:40.he lives for motor racing and will not be taking a year out. Could he

:20:40. > :20:45.changed teams? Of course, he can change teams but I think he loves

:20:45. > :20:50.this team and he knows the support he has got. We have to stay on top

:20:50. > :20:56.form so he can win races, that is what we are going to do. He has got

:20:56. > :21:01.a long career ahead of them and I hope he will stay in this team.

:21:02. > :21:09.would love to speak to him but do you think you could persuade him to

:21:09. > :21:13.talk to the BBC? I will do that. think he is right, if you ask her

:21:13. > :21:19.to change his style and approach commit you could dilute the man he

:21:19. > :21:25.is. But you can never, ever, if you quench the fire burning inside him,

:21:25. > :21:30.you lose half of the magic. This guy is electric, I love watching

:21:30. > :21:37.him! We are very blast, we have a couple of really good drivers.

:21:37. > :21:43.is too busy for your! I thought that might be the answer! Are we

:21:43. > :21:48.stopping you getting a did information! If you get in for -- a

:21:48. > :21:52.we stopping you getting any important information?! There are

:21:52. > :22:00.people out on the circuit, you have probably seen a Mercedes driving

:22:00. > :22:07.around, that has been taking a look at the state of the circuit. It is

:22:07. > :22:12.raining but only reigning likely, it is a visibility situation as

:22:12. > :22:17.much as anything. What will they be looking for? So standing water.

:22:17. > :22:23.That is the worst thing depend get on a racetrack. And remember, this

:22:23. > :22:29.is not a fully made racetrack, it is also used on a daily basis as a

:22:29. > :22:38.road. And where you have standing water, spray causes... It is like

:22:38. > :22:46.in fog, thick fog. Whether we like it or not, it is how dangerous it

:22:46. > :22:48.is. And they have a responsibility, the FIA, I mean. They have a

:22:48. > :22:53.responsibility for the health and welfare of the drivers and we must

:22:53. > :22:58.respect that. But we all want to go racing, but in reasonably safe

:22:58. > :23:04.circumstances. There is a big opportunity for a few people to do

:23:04. > :23:10.something special. Among them, Nick Heidfeld. Who will be lobbying for

:23:10. > :23:17.this race to get going and he will think it will suit them? It is only

:23:18. > :23:25.half points, but second on the grid... I was asked about this.

:23:25. > :23:30.Peter is in a situation where it is some years now since Robert Kubica

:23:30. > :23:34.scored a podium for his team and it would be a really good result if

:23:35. > :23:40.they could hang on to this second place on to the podium. We all like

:23:40. > :23:44.the way he drives, Kamui Kobayashi, and this would be a big result for

:23:44. > :23:52.Sauber. We are not sure what that thumbs-up is about from that

:23:52. > :23:57.Ferrari mechanic. We will grab Martin. It looks very low in

:23:57. > :24:01.intensity, this shower, they have done a good job of clearing up the

:24:01. > :24:06.track. They will wait for this shower and hopefully it will pass

:24:06. > :24:11.through, you can see it. And then we will hopefully start the race

:24:11. > :24:16.again. See what happens with the shower first. Is that an argument

:24:17. > :24:20.the best way to clear this water is to get cars flying around? There is

:24:20. > :24:27.that argument, but if you saw the water out there originally, you

:24:27. > :24:32.could not do that. They feel they have cleared it, but to start again

:24:32. > :24:36.and stops again would be chaotic. Charlie is right to wait and see if

:24:36. > :24:41.that shall it is as light and short as we think it will be. Hopefully,

:24:41. > :24:50.after that, they continue to clear the circuit and we can get started.

:24:50. > :24:55.Do you want a restart? Yes. course he does! Exactly. Look at

:24:55. > :25:02.the pit lane. It may feel like a long time since we started, but it

:25:02. > :25:08.must feel longer for the guys at Ferrari. That is a picture.

:25:08. > :25:14.Vitantonio Liuzzi has decided to go for a wander with those on his

:25:14. > :25:20.feet! Does he realise he is on international television? As a

:25:20. > :25:28.fashion icon, I think he gets his 0! Do you think he is a fashion

:25:28. > :25:32.icon? Only if he intended to be! Just to let you know, you are

:25:32. > :25:42.watching what we hope will eventually be the end of the 2011

:25:42. > :25:44.

:25:44. > :25:49.Canadian Grand Prix. That is the safety car. We did have a safety

:25:49. > :25:52.car start. Rain came down and there was a red flag. It has been an hour

:25:52. > :25:56.since we saw racing and the stewards have been making big

:25:56. > :26:02.decisions. They have brought out the red flag and at the moment, we

:26:02. > :26:06.are waiting for one more shower and hopefully racing will begin. We are

:26:06. > :26:13.on the aim man-made island and they dug for Montreal subway if few

:26:13. > :26:18.years ago. It is basically a bit of a nature reserve. So for most of

:26:18. > :26:24.the year, it has got nothing running around it, which means it

:26:24. > :26:29.is very greasy and slippery. I went for a jog around the track and I

:26:29. > :26:34.saw Foxes and all kinds of animals. This is not be full-time racing

:26:34. > :26:38.circuit, and this has an impact. Something else that runs around on

:26:38. > :26:43.a continual basis is the roulette table because we are in the middle

:26:43. > :26:49.of casino land and that is where most of the traffic comes from

:26:49. > :26:58.Montreal to the casino. Talking of gambling, would you gamble on this

:26:58. > :27:03.race? Somebody like Nick, at people at Renault, if they are looking at

:27:03. > :27:08.the mirror, they would say they prefer the race to finish. That is

:27:08. > :27:13.not a negative approach, they just want to build and half the points

:27:13. > :27:17.would be enough for them and would be a result. It would put them in

:27:17. > :27:23.the right position by making good decisions, and lucky in some cases.

:27:23. > :27:27.That is not the track, that is the waters surrounding the casinos.

:27:27. > :27:32.Let's just wander around two Red Bull. We are not meant to be in the

:27:32. > :27:39.pit lane, but we can break a few rules if we wish. We will see if we

:27:39. > :27:44.can get hold of Mark Webber. It was a long time ago that we started.

:27:44. > :27:52.These guys have been clearing this water constantly from 11am. We will

:27:52. > :27:57.grab a few people. It would be nice to see Mark Webber. Do not go too

:27:57. > :28:02.far in all your microphone will not work. He is on his way, he wants to

:28:02. > :28:08.talk. What are your thoughts on this at the moment? You love to

:28:08. > :28:12.race and want to race. We will race today, just wait a bit longer, no

:28:12. > :28:17.rush. I am surprised we are not out there now because I think another

:28:17. > :28:21.is coming in and if that comes, that will delay it a bit more. The

:28:21. > :28:26.track is holding a lot of water and that makes it difficult, but we

:28:26. > :28:34.have plenty of time so we should get into it. You saw the situation

:28:34. > :28:39.with Lewis, have you got any opinion on that? Definitely, it was

:28:39. > :28:43.a racing incident. Then -- but when you know you have so far to go in a

:28:43. > :28:52.difficult Grand Prix, I gave him the line and he still made contact,

:28:52. > :29:00.so... Did you give him too much room? I do not think so, but I

:29:00. > :29:06.think he was committed to the move. I was still surprised he hit me. It

:29:06. > :29:11.is just so far to go in a Grand Prix, so it surprised me. Should

:29:12. > :29:16.the start had been and a safety car? We felt robbed we did not get

:29:16. > :29:23.the excitement of the rush into the first corner. You as a race that

:29:23. > :29:31.would surely like a straight start? It was on the edge, it was close.

:29:31. > :29:35.This part of the track was ready for it, I think. I do not know. It

:29:35. > :29:39.does not make a difference, it might make a difference if you go

:29:39. > :29:45.single file. It would have definitely had a safety car at some

:29:45. > :29:51.stage, I think. A lot of people say they were watching at Silverstone

:29:51. > :29:55.today and we are starting under a safety car here with four wheels,

:29:55. > :30:02.has Formula One become a bit to health and safety conscious? I do

:30:02. > :30:08.not think so. This is the first time we have used these tyres in a

:30:08. > :30:12.race, so you have to consider that. Visibility is better on motorbikes.

:30:12. > :30:18.They are massively gifted and know what they are doing, but our

:30:18. > :30:26.biggest challenge is visibility. And we cannot put a wet set up on

:30:26. > :30:30.the car so they are low to the ground still. I think it is always,

:30:30. > :30:36.we do not want to see more incidents, at we are trying to get

:30:36. > :30:46.the balance right and it is never easy. The safety car Stott was

:30:46. > :30:48.

:30:48. > :30:58.visibility, how much can you see in the cockpit even behind the safety

:30:58. > :30:58.

:30:58. > :31:05.car? It is very difficult to see. Adviser gets pulverised with water.

:31:05. > :31:11.-- the visor. The start equestrian if it is that bad. You hope it is

:31:11. > :31:19.not the eyesight! Exactly. You know it is the same for everyone. I have

:31:19. > :31:24.got to ask Mark, cross and all the fingers etc, where do you hope to

:31:24. > :31:32.leave Montreal, how many points in the bag? Podium. We need to get

:31:32. > :31:38.through the guys who have jumped us being able to not stop. You never

:31:38. > :31:48.know. There are still many things which could happen. Said could

:31:48. > :31:53.droplet, Fernando could, I could. So, podium for you? Minimum, I hope.

:31:53. > :31:58.We have talked a little bit about this, your team mate, he had the

:31:58. > :32:03.luck with the safety car, Sebastian seems to have the luck and things

:32:03. > :32:11.are falling into place? Are yes, but you make your own luck. He has

:32:11. > :32:15.had a phenomenal run. At the moment, let's see how it goes on for.

:32:15. > :32:22.luck. Casey Stoner won at Silverstone. I think it was a

:32:22. > :32:31.pretty boring by grace. But I am really happy he won. -- a boring

:32:31. > :32:37.bike race. A big motorsport weekend. Always honest. It was interesting

:32:37. > :32:41.when we talk about the luck that we had a rueful smile from him. He is

:32:41. > :32:46.probably pinching himself and night. He thinks, what must I do? I have

:32:46. > :32:53.got the same car, I have got the same engine, I have got the same

:32:53. > :33:00.support, what must I do? Every turn nine mate, he comes out looking of

:33:00. > :33:07.roses and I am back in the gutter. Not necessarily in the gutter but

:33:07. > :33:09.that is a fact. I thought he was very calm and very cool. He is very

:33:09. > :33:14.pragmatic. He understands clearly it will turn in his favour.

:33:14. > :33:20.Remember what happened this time last year. He won a couple of races

:33:20. > :33:23.on the who. This time last year no one gave him a chance. This will be

:33:23. > :33:27.a tougher call for everybody, with the exception of Vettel because he

:33:27. > :33:32.is pulling away. We can get Christian Horner to come and have a

:33:32. > :33:36.chat with us. We have just spoken to Mark Webber, who wants to get

:33:36. > :33:42.the race going, what about the man at the front, he probably does not

:33:42. > :33:46.want to risk going out in the rain? Sebastian is a racer, he is keen to

:33:46. > :33:50.get out there again. The conditions are improving, the track is looking

:33:50. > :33:55.better. There is no reason not get racing again. You do realise how

:33:55. > :34:03.serious the situation is, we are keeping Antiques Roadshow off the

:34:03. > :34:07.air with no racing happening. How much can you as the teams do to

:34:07. > :34:15.lobby Charlie Whiting of the race director to get the race going and

:34:15. > :34:20.get the cars out there? Very little, Charlie is his own man. He has got

:34:20. > :34:24.all his advisers. Sebastian has had a chat with him. He listens to the

:34:24. > :34:28.guys in the cars. He hears all their radios. He is able to make

:34:28. > :34:35.his own judgments from that. He made the right call in the

:34:35. > :34:40.circumstances to suspend the race. Christian, I am intrigued. Are you

:34:40. > :34:46.telling me won this race restarted? At the end of the day, if it was to

:34:46. > :34:52.be stopped now, there would only be half points. But may I remind you,

:34:52. > :34:56.you have Kobayashi in second place, you have all the big protagonists

:34:56. > :35:01.in your championship well out of the way, this is a miracle result

:35:01. > :35:06.for you, why would you want this restarted? Because we are racers.

:35:06. > :35:10.except that but you want to be champions and no one remembers what

:35:10. > :35:14.happens today because you have won the race, you may only get half

:35:14. > :35:18.points but he will still have won the race and it is closer to a

:35:18. > :35:22.championship. Sometimes it is not just about winning, it is back how

:35:22. > :35:26.you win. I think it is right for the fans, the crowd who have come

:35:26. > :35:29.out here today to get the race going again. We are in a good

:35:29. > :35:34.position. It gives mark the opportunity to come back through as

:35:34. > :35:37.well. Who knows, hopefully we will manage to hang on to the league to

:35:37. > :35:41.the end of the race but I think it is the right thing for Formula One

:35:41. > :35:46.to start the race. To we know you have plenty of wet and intermediate

:35:46. > :35:56.tyres, what all the Plan B when they say, 10 minutes to go, what

:35:56. > :35:57.

:35:57. > :36:06.will you doing -- what will you do? Pit is a matter of being flexible

:36:06. > :36:10.and reactive. The pit lane is very short here. The penalty is only 15

:36:10. > :36:15.seconds for a stop. It is a matter of speaking to the drivers and

:36:16. > :36:21.reacting to the weather. There is a degree of lottery to it as well. So

:36:21. > :36:25.far in the race we have managed to make the right course. Normally in

:36:25. > :36:31.Formula One we are the people badgering for information. We have

:36:31. > :36:36.been told 14 minutes until the race restarts. Obviously, you have not

:36:36. > :36:43.heard that. Just give us an idea quickly before you disappear, what

:36:43. > :36:46.happens to your team until now? They will be going through final

:36:46. > :36:53.preparations, making sure the engine and temperatures are warm

:36:53. > :36:58.enough and I will be going for a quick, you know, toilet break.

:36:58. > :37:05.Let's call it a pit stop. We are both very amazed that you do won

:37:05. > :37:10.this race to continue with your man sitting first. And let's not forget,

:37:10. > :37:14.two very workable cars and he does not want them in the scrap heap. I

:37:14. > :37:18.admire your honesty, I'm not sure the rest of the team bosses would

:37:18. > :37:24.say the same thing but well done to you. We want to hear good sporting

:37:24. > :37:28.stories. About 12.5 minutes and counting. There are interesting,

:37:28. > :37:32.the one man sitting behind Sebastian Vettel will be thinking

:37:32. > :37:37.he has only been in Formula One for season and a half, one overtake

:37:37. > :37:42.could give him a race win. We are talking about Kamui Kobayashi, the

:37:42. > :37:48.Japanese driver that everyone loves to watch. If I was Christian I

:37:48. > :37:51.would be nervous that he is the man behind Sebastian. There has been a

:37:51. > :37:56.series of Japanese Grand Prix drivers coming to racing, they have

:37:56. > :37:59.all been amazing in wet conditions. He will now have bright new tyres

:37:59. > :38:07.on a car, the same as everybody else even though he previously had

:38:07. > :38:11.only made one stop. In fact, he had not made a stop. As a result, he

:38:11. > :38:15.has now got new tyres on the car. He will have a go, he has nothing

:38:15. > :38:20.to lose. The just to give you a full update on the way things are

:38:20. > :38:25.standing at the moment. Sebastian Vettel is in first place. Kamui

:38:25. > :38:35.Kobayashi is second with Nick Heidfeld fourth -- Felipe Massa his

:38:35. > :39:11.

:39:12. > :39:17.involved in this restart because he had a coming together with his team

:39:17. > :39:23.mate. It seems finally we will get some racing in Canada. We are. It

:39:23. > :39:30.certainly looks that way. One of the things in all of the aspects we

:39:31. > :39:35.have seen, in how you eloquently relayed the positions on the grid,

:39:35. > :39:40.what surprises me is the Mercedes team. They have made the same

:39:40. > :39:45.decision with both cars. In years gone by, Ross Brawn might have

:39:45. > :39:55.split them. White has happened this time that both cars in position, I

:39:55. > :40:02.

:40:02. > :40:05.don't know. Back to Martin Brundle flag period of two hours and four

:40:05. > :40:11.minutes. Everybody has been patiently waiting. Thank you for

:40:11. > :40:16.staying with us at home. We hope we can give you some action now. They

:40:16. > :40:19.will start behind the safety car as per the regulations. The track is

:40:19. > :40:25.looking significantly better. We have heard about another rainstorm

:40:25. > :40:31.coming in but we have not seen any sign of it. There is no doubt

:40:31. > :40:35.looking out of the window, the track it is in significantly better

:40:35. > :40:40.conditions. Had they red flag it and we did not get under way, half

:40:40. > :40:45.points would have been allocated. There would be a countback to the

:40:45. > :40:48.last complete lack of racing. That was done under safety car

:40:48. > :40:54.conditions so I think they would still have finished in the order

:40:54. > :41:01.they will restart the Grand Prix in. Vettel will be at the front from

:41:01. > :41:08.Kobayashi, Master the man you are looking at will start in third.

:41:08. > :41:18.Nick Heidfeld, Vitaly Petrov, Paul di Resta or six. Mark Webber,

:41:18. > :41:18.

:41:19. > :41:24.seventh, Fernando Alonso who took a gamble on intermediate tyres. The

:41:24. > :41:29.rain shower has moved away gone off the radar. De la Rosa will be ninth

:41:29. > :41:36.for Sauber, standing in for Perez as we have mentioned. Rosberg 11th,

:41:36. > :41:46.Schumacher 12, Sutil 13th, Alguersuari 14. Timo Glock up into

:41:46. > :41:56.58th place for the Virgin Racing Team -- 15th place. Barrichello has

:41:56. > :41:58.

:41:58. > :42:04.pitted twice, his son 16th, look C 17, Buemi 18. Karthikeyan 19.

:42:04. > :42:11.Maldonado for Williams is back down in 20th place. The two Lotus

:42:11. > :42:19.drivers are in 21st and 22nd, Kovalainen and Trulli. D'Ambrosio

:42:19. > :42:26.will line up 23rd and last in the queue. They will follow the

:42:26. > :42:36.Mercedes Benz as they dry the dainty boots. They are fireproof

:42:36. > :42:49.

:42:50. > :42:54.slippers. There is NO-SPACE down which start sliding around on the

:42:54. > :43:00.pedals. Sebastian Vettel, the driver got himself up on the pit

:43:00. > :43:04.wall and kept his head where he wanted it. He was not in any casual

:43:04. > :43:08.conversations much. He seemed focused, David? We did see him

:43:08. > :43:15.talking to Mark Webber but then he was plugged in with all the

:43:15. > :43:21.engineers. The reason they get ahead sets on is not to stop any

:43:21. > :43:25.noise but because the conversation is beamed back to their race

:43:25. > :43:32.control, if you like, their operations room back in Milton

:43:32. > :43:38.Keynes. The same for McLaren back in Woking and Ferrari in Italy.

:43:38. > :43:48.These heated visors, did use those? Yes, I have won back in my day! It

:43:48. > :43:50.

:43:50. > :43:54.plugs into its own batteries supply. It keeps some heat on the visor.

:43:54. > :43:59.They are double glazed as well, like you get on a lot of motorcycle

:43:59. > :44:04.helmets as well, to stop any fogging. When you get fog and damp,

:44:04. > :44:11.you have to lift the visor to clearer to way and they NEWLINE

:44:11. > :44:21.trouble. But you have to do it to see where you're going. You'll see

:44:21. > :44:25.

:44:25. > :44:30.a rip-off there. You can clear mud and oil and flies. You have to make

:44:31. > :44:37.sure you put them out the side of the car. Sometimes they go into the

:44:37. > :44:44.radiator ducts of the car behind. You can see if you raindrops in the

:44:44. > :44:54.puddle. There was a guy who came up with a window wiper to use on the

:44:54. > :44:55.

:44:55. > :45:01.back of the glove. That did not and they are very useful. But I

:45:01. > :45:06.tend to stick under 100 mph on that. Mark Webber, he's had an eventful

:45:06. > :45:09.afternoon. We are looking at a total race time of over four hours,

:45:09. > :45:16.from the lights going out to the chequered flag dropping. That the

:45:16. > :45:19.sooner we get that far. Webber starts in seven. Quickly having to

:45:19. > :45:23.waterproof their notes, the engineers. I imagine there will be

:45:23. > :45:29.several lessons learnt, in the debriefing on Monday and Tuesday,

:45:29. > :45:35.what would we do next time in these circumstances? I don't remember

:45:35. > :45:42.this amount of red flag down time. No question about that. This is a

:45:42. > :45:45.very unusual situation we are seeing in Canada. Surprisingly,

:45:45. > :45:49.this is only part of the preparation for a Grand Prix

:45:49. > :45:54.weekend. As we saw that, just reminding ourselves the number of

:45:54. > :45:58.mechanics and engineers heading out there. Everyone will be properly

:45:58. > :46:07.wet, pretty cold out there, actually. A temperature of 18

:46:07. > :46:14.degrees. We are hoping that the few drops of rain... Apparently it will

:46:14. > :46:17.only last for five minutes. Well, that answers the point I was going

:46:17. > :46:27.to make. Let's hope that the rain doesn't last too long and will get

:46:27. > :46:31.

:46:31. > :46:35.I got a Twitter question through, could he win the Grand Prix if he

:46:35. > :46:45.stays in the front? No is the answer. Someone looking for some

:46:45. > :46:49.

:46:50. > :46:57.everybody has done, to get this race under way. We've been

:46:57. > :47:02.stationary for longer than a Grand Prix takes place, over two hours.

:47:02. > :47:06.We are expecting a little more rain. But it's quite bright out there.

:47:06. > :47:10.It's quite a different scenario. You were saying, as it flicked on

:47:10. > :47:13.screen that it will restart at 10 minutes to the hour, that you

:47:13. > :47:17.thought the racing should be back under way again? No question that

:47:17. > :47:22.they can be running safely behind the safety car. It will be a safety

:47:22. > :47:27.car start. Everybody will be on full wets. Not too much standing

:47:27. > :47:31.water now. Visibility is the big issue. We learned from a number of

:47:31. > :47:35.drivers that we interviewed that they were really struggling in the

:47:35. > :47:40.middle of the pack. Michael Schumacher, taking on a last bit of

:47:40. > :47:44.fluid. I can't imagine he used much of the hydration ahead of the race.

:47:44. > :47:49.How much fluid would you take on a weekend, what is your preparation

:47:49. > :47:53.on race day? A normal race, you take on five or six litres of fluid.

:47:53. > :47:58.That pretty much means that you are constantly topping up, running up

:47:58. > :48:03.to the race. When it is dry, it is quite a physical race because of

:48:03. > :48:07.the high G-force you have when braking. In the wet it is not as

:48:07. > :48:14.physical. But from a mental fatigue point of view, the concentration

:48:14. > :48:18.required is so much higher. minutes to go until the restart of

:48:18. > :48:22.the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix, round seven of this year's world

:48:22. > :48:27.championship. We've seen lots of action earlier on. Surprises, of

:48:27. > :48:31.course. To remind you, 23 of the 24 drivers will restart. Lewis

:48:31. > :48:36.Hamilton, after that contact with team-mate Jenson Button, is out of

:48:36. > :48:42.the race with car damage. At turn 5. They attracted back, but he's not

:48:42. > :48:46.allowed to restart. They now begin to take away the trolley is that

:48:46. > :48:50.include the generators, the heaters and all sorts of... Well, basically,

:48:50. > :48:54.it's quite interesting, a certain part of the car they have to heat

:48:54. > :49:04.up, other parts they have to cool down if they come back on to

:49:04. > :49:06.

:49:06. > :49:12.degrade. The brakes need cooling. One thing that would be useful, if

:49:12. > :49:22.we want to go on to inters, I could say it's too wet, or we should go

:49:22. > :49:26.

:49:26. > :49:36.start the Grand Prix, as a countdown, in this phase. To let

:49:36. > :49:42.the teams know where they are in the sequence. Everybody must be on

:49:42. > :49:45.wet tyres. Full wet tyres. What can we see on that steering wheel?

:49:45. > :49:48.presume that is Felipe Massa or pushing his radios which will stop

:49:48. > :49:53.didn't hold the position long enough. Maybe he was just

:49:53. > :49:57.communicating with his Engineer. You're not allowed to try and steal

:49:57. > :50:01.a march by restarting on intermediates. We saw back in Fuji,

:50:01. > :50:05.where Ferrari had to come back in and change them, they were against

:50:05. > :50:12.the regulations. I'm surprised they were not penalised. It's absolutely

:50:12. > :50:20.clear, you have to start on full wet tyres if it is deemed to be a

:50:20. > :50:25.safety car start. We are back in raising conditions on the Ile

:50:25. > :50:31.Notre-Dame, on the outskirts of Montreal. It is Sebastian Vettel

:50:31. > :50:36.who leads the crocodile that must now follow the safety car. Again,

:50:36. > :50:41.David, how long do you suspect the safety car will be out? I think the

:50:41. > :50:45.conditions are very similar to what we saw a couple of hours ago. So, I

:50:45. > :50:49.would expect them to go once past, maybe maximum twice, just allow

:50:49. > :50:52.everybody to get their cars fully up to temperature. That might be a

:50:52. > :50:55.point that has been discussed that we haven't heard on the radios,

:50:55. > :51:00.that because the cars have been sitting there, they would have been

:51:00. > :51:04.plugged in to keep engine temperatures, but there are that

:51:04. > :51:09.aspect of the car that the drivers have indicated to Charlie Whiting

:51:09. > :51:16.that they want one or two laps behind the safety car for. The fans

:51:16. > :51:22.are jumping up and pointing. "iteration car -- it's a racing

:51:22. > :51:28.car! Haven't seen one of those before!". We are ready for full

:51:28. > :51:31.speed action, sooner rather than later. A completely different

:51:31. > :51:39.picture out there. It's almost as if the island was sinking an hour

:51:39. > :51:46.ago. It emerged again. 2.7 miles, the racetrack. 14 corners, five of

:51:46. > :51:50.them left-handed, nine of them are right handers. This is the hairpin.

:51:50. > :51:58.1010, it has seen so much action over the years. The fans are always

:51:58. > :52:02.there to support drivers. They have thinned out a bit, so people are

:52:02. > :52:07.out the back of the stands and waiting to come back in, or given a

:52:07. > :52:12.bonnet. That is this spray that Vettel is getting off the safety

:52:12. > :52:17.car. Devise their does clear slightly better than that, but it

:52:17. > :52:22.curvature. Its streams off. It's now getting some temperature into

:52:22. > :52:26.those brakes. They can preheat the engines, they can put the tyres and

:52:26. > :52:32.blankets. It's down to the driver to manually get some heat back in

:52:32. > :52:37.those brakes. It's such a difficult decision to know where to break, or

:52:37. > :52:41.how much grip, how much stopping power you are going to have won the

:52:42. > :52:46.race gets under way? A journey into the unknown. The past memory they

:52:46. > :52:52.had was a certain level of water run the track. They are now one

:52:52. > :52:56.fresh tyres. That will potentially give more grip once you get that

:52:57. > :53:00.release agent, that allows them to be taken out of the moulds want

:53:00. > :53:05.they have been manufactured, they tried to even up the grip between

:53:05. > :53:09.the front and rear tyres. It's easy to get a grip on the rear tyres,

:53:10. > :53:13.you can just unleash as much as possible. But getting heat on that

:53:13. > :53:23.front tyre is difficult. You don't want to be weeping too much, you

:53:23. > :53:28.

:53:28. > :53:33.need to have some cute. From the brakes, the heat radiates into than

:53:33. > :53:43.nitrogen in the tyres. A driver's job at this stage is about heat

:53:43. > :53:47.management, they are heating engineers. If you look at the rear

:53:47. > :53:57.wing, no DRS available. That that the discretion of Charlie Whiting

:53:57. > :54:03.again. He will decide when they can have that. You will not be seeing

:54:03. > :54:08.any moving at Rio wings until a few laps into this race at least. --

:54:08. > :54:14.rear wings. I do for staying with us back home. We are transferring

:54:14. > :54:24.to BBC Two at 9pm local time. Local TUI in the UK. Please do transfer

:54:24. > :54:26.

:54:26. > :54:36.over with as very shortly. There will be an overlap, as I understand

:54:36. > :54:37.

:54:37. > :54:42.it. Do we are waiting to see the all-important sign from the safety

:54:42. > :54:48.car. That is the word and I want to see on the screen, as I'm sure you

:54:48. > :54:54.do at home. This 70 lap race should be done by Wednesday, if we are

:54:54. > :54:58.lucky. Coming back to a point you made earlier, these high shots make

:54:58. > :55:05.it a completely clear. Get on with the racing! But I am looking at the

:55:05. > :55:09.commentary box window and you lose the cars into that wall of spray.

:55:09. > :55:13.The two come rankles can be so deceiving. The camera looks through

:55:13. > :55:17.two or three metres of hairspray, looking down. You look through 100

:55:17. > :55:21.metres as you are following another car. It's like being out on a foggy

:55:21. > :55:31.night. You can't see your hand in front of your face, that a better

:55:31. > :55:39.

:55:39. > :55:42.the heart rates will be climbing up to the optimal working condition.

:55:42. > :55:46.Temperatures will all be stabilising. They will all be

:55:46. > :55:52.nervously waiting for that message that the safety car will be in. Is

:55:52. > :55:56.it going to be this lap? I don't think so. Just coming through.

:55:56. > :55:59.are they looking for? Presumably there is a bit of radio

:55:59. > :56:04.transmission that we are not party to, drivers giving their point of

:56:04. > :56:08.view? What would you be looking for? It looks like it's ready to

:56:08. > :56:12.race, to me. There's definitely not an issue with standing water. It's

:56:12. > :56:17.about visibility. We are not getting the radio transmissions

:56:17. > :56:25.from the drivers. The guys in the middle are emerging from this spray.

:56:25. > :56:29.They will be presumably saying it is too wet, too much spraying. I

:56:29. > :56:33.can't imagine will have many more laps of this. Shouldn't they drive

:56:33. > :56:43.accordingly, then? You like to write. But sometimes you need to

:56:43. > :56:50.

:56:50. > :56:55.save people from themselves. -- You their disposal to get those points.

:56:55. > :57:05.If that means a bit of Miss information to the director, so be

:57:05. > :57:07.

:57:07. > :57:11.it. Stefano Domenicali, watching the screen intently. His drivers

:57:11. > :57:16.are third and 8th at the moment. It's interesting, looking out the

:57:16. > :57:20.commentary box, as we are on board in the safety car, Kobayashi looks

:57:20. > :57:28.ready for it. He was right up the rear underfloor of Sebastian Vettel,

:57:28. > :57:38.going through that last chicane. He's good to go. How is the

:57:38. > :57:48.

:57:48. > :57:53.OK. No sign that the safety car is in on his lap I there. Massa, he is

:57:53. > :57:57.third on the road. Just to remind you, they are on a safety car

:57:57. > :58:06.restart and they can start overtaking after the first safety

:58:06. > :58:12.car line. That is before the last chicane. We have a Lotus,

:58:12. > :58:15.Kovalainen, cruising around at the back. That sounds like a slipping

:58:15. > :58:20.clutch or something like that. He is revving the engine but it's not

:58:21. > :58:24.moving forward. Is that a transmission issue for Kovalainen?

:58:24. > :58:30.It doesn't sound like he's got any control over that. It could be

:58:31. > :58:40.hydraulics. He was running 21st, he's right at the back of the field.

:58:41. > :58:53.

:58:53. > :59:01.I have hardly any drive. OK. Copied Safety car goes around again. Can

:59:01. > :59:05.he coaxed the locusts -- copes the Lotus back to the pits? All of

:59:05. > :59:09.these counter behind the safety car. We have a maximum of one hour and

:59:09. > :59:13.five minutes available, with 40 laps to go. It's going to be nip

:59:13. > :59:18.and tuck, it depends on the lap times they are doing. If we had any

:59:18. > :59:24.more heavy rain or safety car periods, it's whether we run out of

:59:24. > :59:28.time before we complete the 70 laps. Still, my eyes are focused on its

:59:28. > :59:36.computer screen in front of me. Still, I don't see the safety car

:59:36. > :59:46.in its lap. Icy track temperature 17 degrees. Air temperature, 18

:59:46. > :59:46.
