:01:27. > :01:33.It is how you go about that. Just when all seems lost,... At perfect

:01:33. > :01:38.performance by Steve Davis... He has done it! It's not about how

:01:38. > :01:46.hard you fall but how quickly you get back up and back into the race.

:01:46. > :01:53.An incredible number of falls. Desperate, now! And a new world

:01:53. > :02:03.record. Retaining total self-belief. No matter how futile it seems.

:02:03. > :02:04.

:02:04. > :02:07.must be the best part of 15 lengths. Swooping! Just holding on... It is

:02:07. > :02:10.about that once-in-a-lifetime performance would you find

:02:11. > :02:19.something that means even when you are last, you can still cross the

:02:19. > :02:26.line first... Jenson Button, last is. He sails past! Somehow finding

:02:26. > :02:36.enough grip. Is he a head? He is! Jensen Button leads the Grand Prix!

:02:36. > :02:37.

:02:37. > :02:41.Sensational drive. It wasn't a bad finish? If you are one of the lucky

:02:41. > :02:46.ones who stayed until the end of the night, the car behind us driven

:02:46. > :02:50.by Jensen Button give us the most incredible finish. One to tell the

:02:50. > :02:54.grand children. You watch the longest race in Formula One history.

:02:54. > :03:00.It felt longer even when watching. How long did it feel in the

:03:00. > :03:05.commentary box? It did feel longer. You were talking about marshals and

:03:05. > :03:12.the water but in the end, it was fantastic. I have no idea you were

:03:12. > :03:17.so at that? At bird-watching? not know that is what you called it.

:03:17. > :03:21.Eddie Jordan, impressive in the commentary box and it was also

:03:21. > :03:25.impressive in the pit lane. The atmosphere was like nothing else?

:03:25. > :03:29.If you were looking for the best Seat in the House, we were so

:03:29. > :03:34.fortunate, we go to many different teams and we had to be with the

:03:34. > :03:39.McLaren team for this race. It was euphoric. You cannot believe the

:03:39. > :03:44.excitement. Wonderful, wonderful occasion. As ever, Formula One does

:03:45. > :03:49.not wait for any man, we can hear the engines roaring. Determined to

:03:49. > :03:54.make it two wins? Watching these pictures, that big grin on his face,

:03:54. > :03:59.Jensen Button is popular but it was the fact that one person dominated

:03:59. > :04:06.so much. And then Jensen Button looks like he was having such a bad

:04:06. > :04:09.race and still took the win? If you think about his career, with Honda

:04:10. > :04:14.in changeable positions, his first victory for McLaren in Melbourne.

:04:14. > :04:23.Changeable conditions. There is nobody like him when it comes to

:04:23. > :04:28.wet and dry transition. There is no question, next time we have those

:04:28. > :04:33.conditions, no matter where he is, if the bookmakers are open, we will

:04:33. > :04:37.have to place bets... After racing around the man-made island two

:04:38. > :04:43.weeks ago, this place is equally unique. It is very were we travel

:04:43. > :04:47.to somewhere were the sunbathers have their action interrupted by

:04:47. > :04:54.the roaring of 4 min one. We are in the industrial heartland of

:04:54. > :05:00.Valencia. One of the biggest ports and Spain and also an 0 to the less

:05:00. > :05:05.glamourous past, with the sheds at once reverberated to the sound of

:05:05. > :05:11.something rather different, fishermen selling their catch. And

:05:11. > :05:18.this is a live shot of the pit lane, full of fans and that is a

:05:18. > :05:22.beautiful area. And just above us, these old tiles. Put up many years

:05:22. > :05:25.ago and they probably had no idea that one day, instead of red

:05:25. > :05:28.snapper and halibut, these buildings would be filled with the

:05:28. > :05:32.most expensive racing cars. There are some lovely things about this

:05:32. > :05:37.place but there was something missing? The most famous moment is

:05:37. > :05:40.Mark Webber going upside down last year. We need this to deliver?

:05:40. > :05:48.need this to deliver, the overtaking in the past has been

:05:49. > :05:53.very poor. And really, that needs to be rectified. But Valencia, it

:05:53. > :05:57.is right in there... It is no different to Monaco, we talk about

:05:57. > :06:05.the architecture, it is a wonderful place to visit but that sparkle,

:06:06. > :06:13.that fire in your tummy, it isn't here yet. We saw one overtake in

:06:13. > :06:16.2009, 12 months ago, 82 overtakes in Turkey. This is the acid test?

:06:16. > :06:20.We should not be surprised, there isn't much overtaking, qualifying

:06:20. > :06:26.sorts out the fastest and the slowest and why should there be any

:06:26. > :06:29.big transition? But with Pirelli, there has been a lot of drop-off in

:06:29. > :06:35.the performance of the tyres. That has made the strategy much more

:06:35. > :06:38.important. And with ers, drag reduction, we see the situation

:06:38. > :06:43.would drivers cannot defend, you cannot defend against the speed

:06:43. > :06:47.differential. There is no question we will see more overtaking. Some

:06:47. > :06:53.people point to the fact that Sebastian Vettel was well aware

:06:53. > :06:57.that Button could have activated that. And talking of the current

:06:57. > :07:01.form and a one champion, with all the euphoria about Jensen Button,

:07:01. > :07:05.nobody has mentioned that it was almost the perfect result for

:07:05. > :07:10.Sebastian Vettel? He will have been told by his engineer that his

:07:10. > :07:15.closest rival, Lewis Hamilton, has just gone out. He will be

:07:15. > :07:21.absolutely crazy in the car with joy. And yes, what I like about

:07:21. > :07:24.Sebastian Vettel, we saw that glimmer of hope. He does make

:07:25. > :07:29.mistakes but he had to be pushed into this and full marks to Jensen

:07:29. > :07:33.Button. I do not think any other driver in any other circumstance

:07:33. > :07:37.would have been able to. Do not give up on the current form and all

:07:37. > :07:43.season, there are still 300 points up for grabs. Before we get into

:07:43. > :07:47.the nitty-gritty, we should we live exactly what happened two weeks ago

:07:47. > :07:51.and these boys will be very pleased to know that we have managed to

:07:51. > :08:01.condense four hours, four minutes and 39 seconds into just a couple

:08:01. > :08:07.

:08:07. > :08:16.will have the race. Whoever is round! Hamilton was getting up the

:08:16. > :08:23.inside. They touched. Lewis Hamilton, so -- suspension damage,

:08:23. > :08:33.puncture. He was trying to pass Jensen Button. Look how hard it is

:08:33. > :08:43.raining, the race is suspended. Ferrari is off? Fernando Alonso. It

:08:43. > :08:43.

:08:43. > :08:53.was Jensen Button. Puncture? Felipe Massa with Kobayashi. Michael

:08:53. > :08:53.

:08:53. > :08:59.Schumacher has gone past the pair of them. The front wing. They will

:08:59. > :09:07.touch. He has broken his front wing. None of these guys were -- know

:09:07. > :09:13.what the front wing is? Michael Schumacher is a sitting target, can

:09:13. > :09:22.he get through? Well... And there he goes. He will not let Jensen

:09:22. > :09:29.Button through at the same time? He can! Mark Webber nearly lost it.

:09:29. > :09:33.Jensen Button sales pastern. But then goes a long way around. Is

:09:33. > :09:40.Schumacher ahead? Jensen Button into second place. -- sales past

:09:40. > :09:48.him. Enter the final lap. Jensen Button at Leeds! Jensen Button,

:09:48. > :09:53.what a victory! He wins a brilliant race! That was Trulli incredible,

:09:53. > :09:57.14 overtakes by Jensen Button in the final five laps. And the final

:09:57. > :10:02.overtake was on the car behind, Sebastian Vettel. The first time we

:10:02. > :10:09.have seen that chink in the arm or of Sebastian Vettel? What went on

:10:09. > :10:12.in the team? How much reflection goes on. It will be very

:10:12. > :10:19.straightforward, he will have looked at the entrance speed into

:10:19. > :10:23.that corner, it is very clear that he put the wheel on to the damp

:10:23. > :10:29.part of the track and that tried to much. They will be no more analysis

:10:29. > :10:32.necessary. It was a mistake by the driver. Why he was so late

:10:32. > :10:37.responding to the pressure that Jensen Button was putting him under,

:10:37. > :10:41.only he can answer. Second place is still not bad. Of course he is

:10:41. > :10:47.disappointed, he does not want to make the stakes in those conditions.

:10:47. > :10:53.It shows he is human. Sebastian is telling everyone who will listen, I

:10:53. > :10:57.was not under pressure, it was a natural error? He can say what he

:10:57. > :11:01.wants, we are looking at this and we have to take over own shoe. He

:11:01. > :11:04.would never have made that mistake if Jensen Button had not been there

:11:04. > :11:08.and for him to go on a length with that argument, it does not wash

:11:08. > :11:13.with me, I think Jensen Button put him under enough pressure to make

:11:13. > :11:17.him fall into that mistake, at least to look into his nerves, and

:11:17. > :11:22.the slightest little confusion in the mind suddenly met the cars

:11:22. > :11:26.around 10 and Jenson Button was passed. When looking at the Gap,

:11:26. > :11:29.you look at the pit board and you see you have five seconds and on

:11:29. > :11:34.the next lap, it is one second, that puts you under pressure

:11:34. > :11:37.because you think, were well I find four seconds? It was the aggression

:11:37. > :11:42.from Jensen Button and I have spoken to him and if you look at

:11:42. > :11:46.the calendar, he said the only way anyone will catch Sebastian Vettel

:11:46. > :11:54.is to be aggressive, or on the track when near him and in the

:11:54. > :11:59.approach. He probably says exactly what Lewis Hamilton is saying with

:11:59. > :12:03.the way he is driving, but I think Jensen Button isn't naturally

:12:03. > :12:07.aggressive, he is smooth and stylish. He loves the changing

:12:07. > :12:10.conditions. Were he will find that you find aggression is beyond me

:12:10. > :12:13.because Sebastian Vettel has a significant lead in the

:12:13. > :12:19.championship so it will take something new. We saw both McLaren

:12:19. > :12:26.cars bumping into each other, you did that in 1999, how does it work?

:12:26. > :12:29.Do you just accept that? There would have been a conversation,

:12:29. > :12:33.Martin mentioned in the broadcast that during that which they had

:12:33. > :12:37.time to reflect on that and has some responsibility. It is never

:12:37. > :12:41.good to crash with your team-mate, not with anyone but the pressure

:12:41. > :12:46.within the happy family of the team is immense on those two guys. The

:12:46. > :12:50.person you have to beat first is to tame it. And the pressure gets more

:12:50. > :12:53.when the man sitting in the car behind Duke has a lead that he has

:12:53. > :12:56.got. Formula One has been on the front and back pages of the past

:12:56. > :13:01.seven days, which is hardly surprising for a sport that

:13:01. > :13:09.generates more stories than points. Let's wrap up all the action from

:13:09. > :13:12.off the track... On the back of his win in Canada, Jensen Button

:13:12. > :13:16.believes he can challenge Sebastian Vettel for this year's World

:13:16. > :13:23.Championship. Potter knows the Red Bull driver can make mistakes under

:13:23. > :13:27.pressure. We are 60 points behind, we have seen a couple of witnesses

:13:27. > :13:31.in Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel over the last two races. And the

:13:31. > :13:36.lough isn't always on their side, which is good to see. Sebastian

:13:36. > :13:40.Vettel insists it was not crapping under pressure, just a rare mistake.

:13:40. > :13:49.It's was not a mistake, I was feeling so much pressure that I

:13:49. > :13:54.cracked. I had to push their heat hard. Everything is back to normal.

:13:54. > :13:58.-- push very hard. I have nothing to be ashamed of or worried about.

:13:58. > :14:01.On the subject of the championship, Fernando Alonso has admitted for

:14:01. > :14:06.the first time he does not expect to be able to beat Sebastian Vettel

:14:06. > :14:11.to this year's title. Instead, he is focusing on second place.

:14:11. > :14:15.first guy is out of reach for the rest of us because he has a lot of

:14:15. > :14:21.advantages. We cannot forget, we are on average one second behind

:14:21. > :14:26.Red Bull. They're very dominant in this championship. Maybe the most

:14:26. > :14:30.dominant car in years. The silly season is in full swing, Jensen

:14:30. > :14:34.Button denies he has been talking to Ferrari and instead looks set to

:14:34. > :14:40.stay at McLaren but Ferrari insist they will keep Felipe Massa and the

:14:40. > :14:45.German magazines have mocked-up what Lewis Hamilton might look like.

:14:46. > :14:52.That isn't very good! I don't think that is so good. I'm not saying too

:14:52. > :14:55.much about that. There is a real change this weekend, could the Red

:14:55. > :14:59.Bull stranglehold on pole position be affected by the ban on

:14:59. > :15:03.qualifying only engine maps to generate exhaust gas even when the

:15:03. > :15:06.driver is off the throttle, using the exhaust for a dynamic game and

:15:06. > :15:10.makes the cars sound like their misfiring of corners. If it comes

:15:10. > :15:16.ahead of another clampdown in this area for the British Grand Prix in

:15:16. > :15:20.a fortnight. All the top teams used qualifying laps and the reason we

:15:20. > :15:24.did not race in this was because fuel consumption was too high or

:15:24. > :15:30.the reliability of the engine. It will make a difference. But my

:15:30. > :15:33.feeling is everybody would just deal with it. Perez is fit to race

:15:33. > :15:37.after his crash in Monaco four weeks ago. The Mexican says his

:15:37. > :15:43.sentence meant it was too soon to try to make a comeback for the last

:15:43. > :15:50.race in Canada. I was feeling dizzy. I was not happy. But my normal life

:15:50. > :15:55.has improved a lot. This is a big help and the motivation and I am

:15:55. > :15:58.looking forward to getting back in the car. And Paul di Resta goes

:15:58. > :16:03.into qualifying today on the back foot after having his car smashed

:16:03. > :16:07.up by the test driver on Friday. The repairs meant he missed most of

:16:07. > :16:10.the second practice so he has a lot of ground to make up. It has proven

:16:10. > :16:14.very difficult to get the car balanced with the temperature on

:16:14. > :16:24.the track. And making sure everything is working. And you have

:16:24. > :16:24.

:16:24. > :16:29.It's over 40 degrees on track temperature. The Grandstand is

:16:29. > :16:32.filling up. Lots of fans taking photos. We haven't necessarily had

:16:32. > :16:37.this atmosphere in Valencia before. It takes a couple of years,

:16:37. > :16:40.naturally enough. It's very close in terms of proximity to Barcelona.

:16:40. > :16:44.So, people with money have to budget tooz where they're going to

:16:44. > :16:47.go, I would imagine. More and more people are coming here because it's

:16:47. > :16:51.absolutely in the centre of the city. It's beside the port. There's

:16:51. > :16:55.a lot of real life going on here. I can see the racing is becoming more

:16:56. > :16:59.exciting and people will flood to this place. I've bumped into quite

:16:59. > :17:05.a few British people who are biening racing with a holiday. You

:17:06. > :17:10.can walk from the track, lie on the beach in the afternoon. You could

:17:10. > :17:14.pay less for the ticket and get a bit a holiday too. Now just past

:17:14. > :17:20.the Force India. Give us the mind set of Paul di Resta. He picked up

:17:20. > :17:29.points in the first couple of races. Everything seemed so easy. Now

:17:29. > :17:35.maybe the sport doesn't seem as easy as it seemed. It isn't as easy

:17:35. > :17:38.as it seemed. Can Force India be a front-running team? That remains to

:17:38. > :17:42.be seen. He needs to be beating his team-mates, scoring points and

:17:42. > :17:44.getting an opportunity to go somewhere else to score wins.

:17:44. > :17:48.Rubens Barrichello's engine is roaring up over there. We don't

:17:48. > :17:52.want to blast your ears for a second time. We heard from Ted

:17:52. > :17:55.talking about new regulations coming into Formula One. This is

:17:55. > :17:58.changing engine mapping for qualifying. Fernando Alonso has

:17:58. > :18:02.described this as the second championship. Is that just

:18:02. > :18:04.desperation from him, do you think hoping this will create a second

:18:04. > :18:08.championship? Every year there's always someone complaining about

:18:08. > :18:12.something. It was the double diffusers, when only three teams

:18:12. > :18:16.started with it in 2009. Jenson managed to win races early doors

:18:16. > :18:20.and hell on to win the world championship. Then obviously, we've

:18:20. > :18:23.had flexible front wing talk. Now we've got the blowing hot gases.

:18:23. > :18:27.Once this passes, it will be something else. I joked this

:18:27. > :18:32.morning on Radio 5 Live it will be the colour of some of the driver's

:18:32. > :18:36.underwear that's the secret thing. They do look for everything in this

:18:36. > :18:39.sport? I have my own little theory. We've seen Red Bull so dominant

:18:39. > :18:43.this year. We're in danger of seeing another era of Michael

:18:43. > :18:47.Schumacher, dare I say it. The car is so good. Vettel is so good. My

:18:47. > :18:51.guess is they are looking at areas where they think Red Bull has been

:18:51. > :18:54.advantage and they want to take it away from them. In many respects

:18:54. > :18:59.that's how Formula One works. If it's going to make closer racing,

:18:59. > :19:04.I'm all for it. They just look for different things each week until

:19:04. > :19:07.they ban Red Bull eventually. don't say it as flippant as that.

:19:07. > :19:12.But the change of the engine here is directed towards Red Bull.

:19:12. > :19:17.That's my view. It's such a complex sport. The regulations are set

:19:17. > :19:21.there. Interpreting the rules, of course with technology, you can

:19:21. > :19:31.explore areas when they were writing the rules they didn't know

:19:31. > :19:34.existed. It constantly has to be updated. As of today it is national

:19:34. > :19:37.motor sport week in the United Kingdom. You can walk through the

:19:37. > :19:41.front doors of a Formula One team and get really cles to motor sport.

:19:41. > :19:46.We saw it as a great opportunity to make David Coulthard get up very

:19:47. > :19:53.early in the morning and do this: Attention Class A drivers, you have

:19:53. > :20:00.15 minutes to qualify. This is all about affordable motor

:20:00. > :20:07.sport. This is Lewis. This is his road car. And this is what track

:20:07. > :20:17.days are all about. 25 quid you brought your, what is it? Scirocco.

:20:17. > :20:17.

:20:17. > :20:24.Still some kit in the back there. Here I am, out on the Brands Hatch

:20:24. > :20:28.circuit. Wow, it's such a great track, isn't it? Great opportunity.

:20:28. > :20:38.I wish I'd known this when I was a young driver coming up. Oh, my God,

:20:38. > :21:15.

:21:15. > :21:19.James Bond. I've seen him in the movies. It's best defined by a map

:21:19. > :21:26.you're given and it's to get round this course as quickly as possible.

:21:26. > :21:31.It's a great entry-level motor sport. Per round is 150 maximum to

:21:31. > :21:35.do. We go to the right of this cone, to the left of the next. You're

:21:35. > :21:39.going to stop here. Circle these here. Keep the power going, then

:21:39. > :21:43.you go forward. Come to a halt. Reverse off the line. Turn, come to

:21:43. > :21:48.a halt, select reverse, looking over your shoulder. The finish line

:21:48. > :21:53.is on the left. Well... What looks like a very short course, actually

:21:53. > :22:03.I'm not sure I can memorise it. Grand Prix racing is easy, you do

:22:03. > :22:33.

:22:33. > :22:36.the same thing time and time again. -- goodness.

:22:36. > :22:41.APPLAUSE Would that have got me an entry

:22:41. > :22:46.level or would I have been firmly last? Erm, going the wrong way

:22:46. > :22:50.would incur a very large penalty. It would be fastest time plus 20

:22:50. > :22:57.seconds. Official time keeper, what do we have here? Alastair's time

:22:57. > :23:02.was? 23.31 and yours was 32.12, but two penalties. The two penalties,

:23:02. > :23:12.what does that add to the time? Another ten seconds. Right. So 19

:23:12. > :23:19.

:23:19. > :23:24.seconds off the pace in a 23-second wheelspin... It is an uphill ski

:23:24. > :23:27.slalom and it's he or she who gets furthest. It can be done incredibly

:23:27. > :23:34.cheaply. Like all motor sports you can spend as much as you like as

:23:34. > :23:39.well. Well done, yeah. It is purely a

:23:39. > :23:47.driver's sport. So actually a new comer, spending a lot of money,

:23:47. > :23:50.will get him no results whatsoever. This is a great sport for partners,

:23:50. > :23:54.because you need your co-driver there to lean on the wheels when

:23:54. > :24:00.you're going up a tight corner. Yeah. Lots of husbands and wives,

:24:00. > :24:03.lots of brothers and brothers. Help! This could definitely test

:24:03. > :24:11.the relationship if you have a husband and wife in here. Shall we

:24:11. > :24:21.test my skills and see if I can get up the hill? Little bit of left,

:24:21. > :24:31.right. Brake off. Off the gas. No. The look on your

:24:31. > :24:50.

:24:50. > :24:53.face. That's because I know I have on. Power, more power. Burn the

:24:53. > :25:01.wheels. Absolutely it's going, it's going.

:25:01. > :25:06.Yay skhrm -- yay! I'm happy with that. I don't want to go any

:25:06. > :25:10.further. Thank you very much. Right, I think I've had enough adrenaline

:25:10. > :25:14.for today. You can drive it back down the hill.

:25:14. > :25:18.His excuse that it was too dissimilar to a car like this, used

:25:18. > :25:21.to the Formula One cars. Ross Brawn was chuckling away to that. Did you

:25:22. > :25:26.see any skills that might make you want to bring this man out of

:25:26. > :25:30.retirement? I would have done a better job more ballast. Apparently

:25:30. > :25:37.that does help and bouncing. always said you're too thin,

:25:37. > :25:43.particularly for live television. Have you had an offer of a contract

:25:43. > :25:48.yet? Fun any enough, I haven't. We actually had a run up the hill

:25:48. > :25:54.climb as well with Scott Moran, the champion, incredible what they're

:25:54. > :25:58.doing. Stirling Moss started in that way back. It's worth going to

:25:58. > :26:03.motor sport.com. It's an affordable way to get into motor sport. Let's

:26:03. > :26:07.talk about your involvement in this. You're throwing open the doors of

:26:07. > :26:13.Mercedes Grand Prix and welcoming the F1 in? We have two competitions

:26:13. > :26:18.running. One for a factory visit, factory tour. The other is to join

:26:18. > :26:23.us at good wood to join us as part of the team and work on the car.

:26:23. > :26:28.have one question, it's slightly different, Michael Schumacher,

:26:28. > :26:35.Mercedes, next year's contract. Whose side is the option on? It's

:26:35. > :26:39.on Michael's side. He can renew if he wishs? Thank you. What do you

:26:39. > :26:43.expect his thinking to be? He was second in can da, faster than some

:26:43. > :26:47.of the guys on the track, the fastest at times. Are those results

:26:47. > :26:52.going to help to convince him to stay, do you think, or does he not

:26:52. > :26:56.need any convincing? It reminds him of how much fun it can be. It's

:26:56. > :27:01.frustrating to be midfield, when he's had such a great career. He's

:27:01. > :27:05.used to fighting at the front. He had a taste of it again. If we can

:27:05. > :27:09.convince him that we can be there consistently, he will carry on.

:27:09. > :27:12.I bring you back to the go motor sport side of things, do you have a

:27:12. > :27:16.policy to allow a certain amount of university graduates or people to

:27:17. > :27:20.do work experience within the company? How do you do that?

:27:20. > :27:27.Presumably the bright young talent is the future of Formula One?

:27:27. > :27:33.as much as we can. We have a lot of students come through. We work with

:27:33. > :27:37.former students. I think it's a great initiatives. The universities

:27:37. > :27:40.get together and design a racing car that they take to Silverstone.

:27:40. > :27:47.That's a fantastic initiative. F one at schools is a competition,

:27:47. > :27:51.you know, that will jet propel cars, that they build and race each other.

:27:51. > :27:58.That's fantastic. We do an awful lot on that side. I must put final

:27:58. > :28:02.touch to that. I think it's fair to say 6 billion revenue is in the

:28:02. > :28:08.British economy because of our sport. We mustn't let that be

:28:08. > :28:11.forgotten. How much of that do you feel is a result of Formula One?

:28:11. > :28:15.are the centre of Formula One. Eight of the teams are in the UK.

:28:15. > :28:20.If you want a Formula One team, you come to the UK. 6 billion of

:28:20. > :28:24.turnover, 4, 4 billion is exported. 40,000 people have a

:28:24. > :28:27.career with motor sport in the UK. We should celebrate it. It's

:28:27. > :28:37.fantastic. Let's hope a British engineer can get this car towards

:28:37. > :28:41.the front. Mike I hope you're more optimistic for this weekend. Thank

:28:41. > :28:46.you. Lewis Hamilton has had a tough couple of races. The outburst after

:28:46. > :28:50.Monaco, ended up in the wall in can da. We decided to put a smile on

:28:50. > :28:59.his face. We sent him to watt kins Glenn, the famous American circuit,

:28:59. > :29:04.to do what he does best, in a slightly different car.

:29:05. > :29:11.For many people in America this is mecca for road racing. We used to

:29:11. > :29:17.come in the 70s and watch back then. That was exciting. Mario Andretti

:29:17. > :29:22.and Johnny Player, Lotus special black. He was our favourite. Great

:29:22. > :29:29.British drivers have been here, Jimy Clark. My son and I came up

:29:29. > :29:34.from pencele vain ya, a four-hour drive. We wanted to see a --

:29:34. > :29:44.Pennsylvania, a four-hour drive. came to see Lewis Hamilton and Tony

:29:44. > :30:10.

:30:10. > :30:20.and I think the history and Stewart, it's like driving an old, historic

:30:20. > :30:28.

:30:28. > :30:35.car. It's completely different for drive this? It is. I can't wait to

:30:35. > :30:42.get on the road. I have already? Shake and bake! I'm going to have

:30:42. > :30:47.fun. Expected to be heavy. Go on... I'm going to try and enjoy it, this

:30:47. > :30:57.does not have downforce, it's much heavier than what I try. But I

:30:57. > :31:01.watch it on TV. Days of Thunder. Getting a chance to drive his

:31:01. > :31:06.Formula One car is an honour so I'm really excited to be here. And

:31:06. > :31:09.waited 40 years of my life to do this! Am a little nervous, I want

:31:09. > :31:14.to make sure that I bring this car back in the same condition that it

:31:14. > :31:20.leaves the pit lane. Especially a car that he has won the World

:31:20. > :31:23.Championship in. Massive excited, I feel like a kid in a candy store.

:31:23. > :31:33.Getting to drive a different car and feel this engine, it sounds

:31:33. > :31:33.

:31:33. > :32:36.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:32:36. > :32:40.have to swap jobs! Are you ready to race over here? Yes, she never know.

:32:40. > :32:45.There was nothing in the world that is like driving a Formula One car.

:32:45. > :32:51.It was cool to have all these fans coming out. And see Lewis Hamilton

:32:51. > :32:55.and myself to something that is out of our element. Some nice donuts?

:32:55. > :33:05.did a couple at the end, I had to give it a go. You have to take that

:33:05. > :33:06.

:33:06. > :33:10.off your box. Shake and bake! If you have no idea what that means,

:33:10. > :33:15.watch tad bigger nights. We have escaped the loudest acclaim.

:33:15. > :33:19.Everywhere we went today, some clever engineer decided to ask the

:33:19. > :33:24.team to roar their engines. We are at the back, it's wonderful to see

:33:24. > :33:27.the way this operates, the teams have brought specially adapted

:33:27. > :33:34.exhausts just so they can blow hot air from underneath the old fish

:33:34. > :33:44.market. Divot, you were out there with Lewis Hamilton, he has come up

:33:44. > :33:44.

:33:44. > :33:53.with the new nickname? Tony Stewart, he has smoke. And Lewis Hamilton,

:33:53. > :33:59.he said probably bump or crash? I thought that was very humorous.

:33:59. > :34:07.Thankfully, we don't actually carry nicknames. One would just be?

:34:07. > :34:13.Come on! Boring. We cannot say it on! Let's move on. I was thinking

:34:13. > :34:17.of one for you, Eddie Jordan! Let's talk about Lewis Hamilton, he has

:34:17. > :34:20.had past couple of races that are quite tough, everyone from Nicky

:34:21. > :34:24.ladder to Eddie Irvine have had something to say about his current

:34:24. > :34:33.driving but what about the man himself. He has been speaking to

:34:33. > :34:36.Ted Kravitz. There was Hamilton, suspension damage, puncture. This

:34:36. > :34:42.is just incredible. It's hard enough out there without running

:34:42. > :34:48.into your team-mate. Difficult times for McLaren. Hamilton has

:34:48. > :34:51.gone up the inside. Surely that is another penalty? You talked about

:34:51. > :34:59.turning over a new leaf, have you look at yourself and the driving

:34:59. > :35:06.and when you take it more easy? I have stood back and I have looked

:35:06. > :35:10.at things. I liked the way I drive. I will continue to drive the way I

:35:10. > :35:18.drive. If I was not be able to drive the way I can, I would not

:35:18. > :35:24.enjoy it. Of course, he can always make better judgments. Just

:35:24. > :35:30.improving on certain judgments and calls. A very clumsy pass going on.

:35:30. > :35:37.Hamilton drives into Felipe Massa. Felipe Massa is off the road.

:35:37. > :35:43.of the 100 board races I have done, you are bound to have some that

:35:43. > :35:53.don't come off so well and when they do, of, they are good. I had a

:35:53. > :35:54.

:35:54. > :36:03.bit of a bad run. He is looking at the inside. Hamilton takes the lead.

:36:03. > :36:08.He was Hamilton, brilliantly wins the Chinese Grand Prix. There is a

:36:08. > :36:15.quote, if you don't go for gaps, you are no longer a racing driver?

:36:15. > :36:18.Yes, I had that coat when I was fairly young. It stuck with me. --

:36:18. > :36:25.heard that quote. I don't know if other drivers have that feeling but

:36:25. > :36:30.I definitely do. Twitcher is awash with potential nicknames former

:36:30. > :36:33.partners in crime but we cannot broadcast them. Mark Webber came

:36:33. > :36:37.out with the Great Court, Lewis Hamilton seems to think that the

:36:37. > :36:43.chequered flag was at the apex of turn three on the first lap. Is

:36:43. > :36:47.this impatient, passion and driving? Or is there was Hamilton

:36:47. > :36:52.driving as he always has and he is being unlucky? I must make

:36:52. > :36:57.reference, he said, I liked the way I drive. And so do we. It's

:36:57. > :37:01.exciting. Please don't change. You don't automatically lose brilliant

:37:01. > :37:06.talent. It is born out of frustration, his car was not good

:37:06. > :37:09.enough when it launched an that has made huge strides but I want Lewis

:37:09. > :37:13.Hamilton to drive the way he is. That is how he excites me and I

:37:13. > :37:19.want to see exciting racing, I don't want to see former leader. He

:37:19. > :37:23.does it for me. I think it is down to the pace of the car.

:37:23. > :37:27.Unsurprisingly. Sebastian Vettel has not had to overtake many people.

:37:27. > :37:32.He has started on pole. Michael Schumacher has statistically

:37:32. > :37:38.overtaken more people at the start of races because he tends to be on

:37:38. > :37:43.the for throat or just outside the top 10. -- 4th row. If the McLaren

:37:43. > :37:47.is the fastest car out there, but it has been lacking in qualifying,

:37:47. > :37:51.it would be different. If Lewis Hamilton does not have to come from

:37:51. > :37:55.behind, he would not have to make those manoeuvres and it is part of

:37:55. > :38:01.his instinct to go for the gap and it is so difficult to pull that

:38:01. > :38:04.pass off. I would not criticise him for having a go. It is just part of

:38:04. > :38:13.Formula One, trying to pass a faster car on the racetrack and it

:38:13. > :38:17.will be close at times. Statistically, Lewis Hamilton, his

:38:17. > :38:24.past three have come from trying to pass the car in front. Can you look

:38:24. > :38:30.at these... This was Monza. Getting there will inside Felipe Massa.

:38:30. > :38:36.That was clumsy, bunched up. There was a gap. He was not going for the

:38:37. > :38:39.past. Singapore, on the outside of for clever and I think that was, on

:38:39. > :38:45.reflection, Mark Webber touching the rear wheel of Lewis Hamilton.

:38:45. > :38:49.It was almost like a reverse of what we saw in Canada with Lewis

:38:49. > :38:53.Hamilton and Mark. And the incident with Jensen Button. Taking the

:38:53. > :38:58.racing line. You could argue at best that was a racing incident and

:38:58. > :39:02.at worst, it was the responsibility of Lewis Hamilton because he was

:39:02. > :39:07.behind. It should not be the car in front's responsibility to weed out

:39:07. > :39:11.of the way. It was always going to be a closing gap. He had to make

:39:11. > :39:17.the pass, he did that with Jensen Button in China and he went on to

:39:17. > :39:22.win. Jensen Button perhaps that, it's not happening now. We will

:39:22. > :39:28.continue that. Thank you very much. We will hear your beautiful voices

:39:28. > :39:33.very shortly. Interesting point, would you think Jansen's mind was

:39:33. > :39:38.there? He said he did not see Lewis Hamilton? That is what he says, the

:39:38. > :39:45.camera does not say that, it says he made a significant error on the

:39:45. > :39:48.corner before and he went to take advantage of the inside track

:39:48. > :39:52.because it was the Hon Nicholas Lewis Hamilton could pass. This

:39:52. > :39:56.spray would have netted was virtually impossible for Jensen

:39:56. > :40:00.Button to see Lewis Hamilton and for certainly know that Jensen

:40:00. > :40:04.Button is very straightforward and clean as a driver so to say that he

:40:04. > :40:07.caused an accident, no one says that. It was just one of those

:40:07. > :40:12.things, I do not know where else Lewis Hamilton could have gone, he

:40:12. > :40:16.had the speed out of the corner and had to have a go. And he does have

:40:16. > :40:19.a go and the good news is, when he tends to have bad races or gets

:40:19. > :40:23.caught up in front of the stewards, he puts in an incredible

:40:24. > :40:28.performance afterwards so watch it. 10 minutes until qualifying starts

:40:28. > :40:31.in Valencia. Three different winners in the three races and by

:40:31. > :40:35.far the most popular and most patient was Rubens Barrichello, who

:40:35. > :40:45.had to wait five years for another win in 4 min one. It came right

:40:45. > :40:48.

:40:48. > :40:53.here. Lee McKenzie has been with him. -- Formula One. I had my 10th

:40:53. > :40:59.winner, the 100 for Brazil. It was just phenomenal. For the first time

:40:59. > :41:03.in five years, Rubens Barrichello is a winner in Formula One.

:41:03. > :41:07.remember going up the stairs and Lewis saying, what a great race it

:41:07. > :41:12.was, it was a great one. Some drivers have not been so impressed

:41:12. > :41:17.with the circuit, you like it? is a place I like, there is a good

:41:17. > :41:20.buy. At certain points the drivers complain and that is we make a

:41:20. > :41:24.straight line but the walls come back. So it becomes blind. There

:41:24. > :41:28.has not been a lot of overtaking the strike but if we had some in

:41:29. > :41:34.Monaco, we will have plenty. Rubens Barrichello makes a beautiful move

:41:34. > :41:38.on his old Ferrari team-mate. He will be grinning from ear to ear.

:41:38. > :41:42.Last year we saw problems with back markers, Mark Webber... 40 thought

:41:42. > :41:45.that the closing speeds from the Lotus were too extreme, do you

:41:46. > :41:50.think that might be more of a problem this weekend? We hope not

:41:50. > :41:54.but that is a problem. The problem is with those walls coming back to

:41:54. > :41:59.you and coming away. It is almost like the car in front isn't

:41:59. > :42:03.actually taking the defensive line. There could be decisions as to work

:42:03. > :42:08.to go. Just watching what Mark Webber went through, that Philip

:42:08. > :42:13.was just horrible. It is like the spectators are on top of you.

:42:13. > :42:17.feels good. As long as they are safe. It feels very good. I

:42:18. > :42:23.remember seeing a lot of people in the pool at the top of the

:42:23. > :42:28.buildings. And having fun. It was such a long time ago but I remember

:42:28. > :42:38.that in Spain, before Alonso, you could count how many people we had

:42:38. > :42:43.on the grandstand. This is a little tricky section. Tell us about this

:42:43. > :42:46.and coming into the bridge? Just fantastic, the feeling you go

:42:46. > :42:52.through, it is an narrow part of the circuit and it feels good. It

:42:52. > :42:59.is something different. Is this track edged into a memory or do you

:42:59. > :43:04.walk around and say, I remember this... It is in your mind. He

:43:04. > :43:09.takes five laps for a racing driver to memorise. Five laps. And when

:43:09. > :43:13.you do that, you never forget. you feel excited? You have done so

:43:13. > :43:19.many races in Formula One, do you still have the feeling of not

:43:19. > :43:23.waiting to get back into the car? Every weekend I feel refreshed. The

:43:23. > :43:29.most difficult moment is when you say goodbye to the family and the

:43:29. > :43:33.kids. That is the tough part. I have to go for another wicket. As

:43:33. > :43:37.soon as you are in the car I'm going to the airport, you're in the

:43:37. > :43:44.racing mode. They were sitting at home and having lunch and they said,

:43:44. > :43:50.does anybody want me to be more at home? Mummy said, yes and the other

:43:51. > :43:55.two said, no! Three against one. has been a pleasure to get your

:43:55. > :44:01.insights. I hope to have a great weekend. Thank you very much.

:44:01. > :44:05.will let you speak to engineers and maker plans. Thank you. Happy

:44:05. > :44:10.memories for Rubens Barrichello, yet to make it into the final part

:44:10. > :44:14.of qualifying. We are walking into position to watch qualifying. You

:44:14. > :44:19.just so Lewis Hamilton? I asked him how his mind was and he said,

:44:19. > :44:22.looking good. Good to know. Lewis Hamilton will use all of a skills

:44:23. > :44:28.just to keep the car on the track because it is still so slippy at

:44:28. > :44:32.there? For good reason. This is still a road circuit and you have

:44:32. > :44:37.all the trucks and the cars and everyday traffic and all of the oil

:44:37. > :44:40.that is deposited, it takes longer, it is significantly slower than

:44:40. > :44:47.normal circuit so you have those added together and it takes longer

:44:47. > :44:51.to bed in. Schumacher coming around, going over the bridge and he spins

:44:51. > :44:57.the car 180 degrees. This is the final part of practice this morning.

:44:57. > :45:01.By now, it should have more grip. What will happen? We are about to

:45:01. > :45:07.find out. 20 minutes of action coming your way. The slow was seven

:45:07. > :45:17.cars will be alone at it. -- slowest seven cars will be

:45:17. > :45:30.

:45:30. > :45:33.round eight of 19 in this year's Formula One world championship.

:45:33. > :45:38.This 3.3 mile Valencia Street Circuit, as it's called, it's more

:45:39. > :45:43.of a regular race track with walls, I would say. It has 25 corners. 24

:45:43. > :45:47.drivers here, but only one of them can be on pole position. We have

:45:47. > :45:54.just over an hour to find out who that man will be. David, where

:45:54. > :45:57.should we look first today? We're going to look at the man who's been

:45:57. > :46:00.locking out pole position, Sebastien Vettel. There's been talk

:46:00. > :46:05.about changes made to the software and the ability that the teams have

:46:05. > :46:11.to change that software between qualifying and the race. This sort

:46:11. > :46:15.of hot blown cold diffuser that we've been hearing a lot about.

:46:15. > :46:18.They're not allowed to run different software now than what

:46:18. > :46:23.they start the session with. People will be interested to see what

:46:23. > :46:27.effect that has. As the track temperature gets up to 44 degrees,

:46:27. > :46:30.then the humidity and air temperature increases. You get a

:46:30. > :46:33.different race track than practice sessions. Quickest in the morning

:46:33. > :46:38.was Sebastien Vettel. Closely followed by Fernando Alonso. But

:46:38. > :46:42.this is a different track now. The tyres interact differently with the

:46:42. > :46:46.Tarmac. You have less downforce available as the air temperature

:46:46. > :46:50.increases and less horse power as well. The drivers won't expect the

:46:50. > :46:54.car to be the same as it was following the morning session.

:46:54. > :46:58.big crowd enjoying the sunshine, very much looking forward to this

:46:58. > :47:05.qualifying session. It's a chemical reaction between the tyres and the

:47:05. > :47:08.track. Up at 44 centigrade, we heard Mclaren drivers saying we

:47:08. > :47:14.can't switch these prime, sorry the new medium tyre they're running

:47:14. > :47:18.here, they can't switch them on. What does that mean? There's a

:47:18. > :47:22.chemical interaction between the tyre and the road and for whatever

:47:22. > :47:25.reason, certain tyres will work better at lower temperatures and

:47:25. > :47:30.others work better at higher temperatures. This is the first

:47:30. > :47:33.time we've had Pirelli tyres on this race track. They make the best

:47:33. > :47:39.guess as to the right separation between the soft option tyre, the

:47:39. > :47:43.one favoured for qualifying and the harder prime tyre, which will be

:47:43. > :47:48.used once during the Grand Prix. At the moment, it looks like there's a

:47:49. > :47:51.bigger spread than normally. There's at least 1.2 seconds to 1.5

:47:52. > :47:58.seconds between those two tyres. The operating window of the tyres

:47:58. > :48:04.is bigger than we've seen at other Grand Prixs. As we look at

:48:04. > :48:08.constructors' championship, Red Bull, Renault way out front from

:48:08. > :48:13.McLaren-Mercedes, Ferrari, less than half the point. Quite a close

:48:13. > :48:18.fight between Renault and Mercedes that looks like it could go on

:48:18. > :48:22.season long. Sebastien Vettel leading the world championship by a

:48:22. > :48:26.big margin. You know, if Vettel didn't rock up here or Silverstone

:48:26. > :48:31.in two weeks' time, he would still be leading the world championship

:48:31. > :48:35.at the next race. He has more than two Grand Prix victories in hand.

:48:35. > :48:39.He has 60 points advantage with 25 per victory. There's still more

:48:39. > :48:44.than half the season to go. Remember back to Jenson Button's

:48:45. > :48:48.world championship year, dominated the first half the season and --

:48:48. > :48:51.half of the season and then struggled. As people caught up and

:48:51. > :48:55.leapfrog ahead of where Brawn started the year. There's a long

:48:55. > :49:00.way to go in this season. I don't think that viewers should be

:49:00. > :49:03.thinking it's a foregone conclusion that we'll have Sebastien Vettel as

:49:03. > :49:07.world champion. Mclaren have designed to make either of their

:49:07. > :49:11.two drivers champions again. And Fernando Alonso on his home track

:49:11. > :49:16.here has looked pretty motivated to get Ferrari back in the picture.

:49:16. > :49:21.Indeed, a lot of points available still. I think it's 275 still

:49:21. > :49:26.available this year. So, a long way to go. Now the drivers must qualify

:49:26. > :49:29.today and race that ignition map tomorrow, which is going to be a

:49:29. > :49:33.challenge for some of them. At Silverstone in two weeks, we might

:49:33. > :49:41.see the reset that everybody's talking about. For now, it's all

:49:41. > :49:51.eyes on getting the best out of the cars this afternoon. Half a minute

:49:51. > :49:52.

:49:52. > :49:56.now to go before the green light is on. Jaime Alguersuari painting a

:49:56. > :50:02.picture of this race track on the back of his eye lids imagining

:50:02. > :50:06.every time and place that he will touch the brakes, turn the steering

:50:06. > :50:10.wheel, apply the throttle to get that Toro Rosso out of qualifying

:50:10. > :50:14.one into the second part of the qualifying hour.

:50:14. > :50:23.And there it is then, qualifying one begins. We have got 20 minutes

:50:23. > :50:28.to lose seven drivers. As ever, we expect, I hate to say it, we expect

:50:28. > :50:33.team Lotus, Virgin racing team and hiss panna to be six of the seven.

:50:33. > :50:41.Db -- Hispania to be six of the seven. It doesn't always turn out

:50:41. > :50:46.that way. There can be surprises now. I wonder, David, with this big

:50:46. > :50:50.step in the tyres, you've explained between 1.2 and 1.5 seconds from

:50:50. > :50:53.the prime tyre to the option, is that going to put pressure under

:50:54. > :50:59.some midfielders early on to get a set of those soft tyres on make

:50:59. > :51:02.sure they get through? It will. It will put pressure on them to get

:51:02. > :51:06.the tyres on. They have three sets of each of the tyres available,

:51:06. > :51:12.three sets of the option and three of the prime. They don't have to

:51:12. > :51:15.use them. Certainly one of the midgrid running teams, whether

:51:15. > :51:18.that's Toro Rosso, Force India, you know they're going to have to

:51:19. > :51:22.protect themselves. We see some large amount of smoke out of the

:51:22. > :51:26.back of Paul di Resta's car. It could be just venting, something

:51:26. > :51:31.from the engine. They're not allowed to drip oil out of the back

:51:31. > :51:34.of the cars like they did in the late 90s. They've got to actually

:51:34. > :51:38.any excess oil blow through or anything from the gearbox going

:51:38. > :51:43.into the air tray of the engine and gets ingested by the engine. It

:51:43. > :51:49.seem tolz have cleared now. You may remember a time when people

:51:49. > :51:53.qualified in Monaco and they overfilled the oil tank, put oil

:51:53. > :52:02.everywhere to slow down the opposition. What a scandalous idea

:52:02. > :52:07.!. Fernando Alonso is out on the prime tyre. It's a medium compound

:52:07. > :52:12.tyre. The first time we've seen it. I did 20 laps on it this week,

:52:12. > :52:16.doing a feature for BBC, drilling down and looking at why the tyres

:52:16. > :52:20.have changed the dynamics in Formula One in 2011. I thought it

:52:20. > :52:25.felt like a very good tyre. The temperature there was 47 degrees

:52:25. > :52:29.last week. It seemed to hang on pretty well. I think it will work

:52:29. > :52:34.nicely in these companies. We've seen the GP3s and 2s on Pirelli

:52:34. > :52:38.tyres putting more and more rubber down on the street circuit, this

:52:39. > :52:45.temporary facility. So the track should be coming nicely to the

:52:45. > :52:50.drivers, as this qualifying session unfolds. Now we saw a very quick --

:52:50. > :52:58.very quick times this morning 1.37.2 by Sebastien Vettel this

:52:58. > :53:01.morning. That is faster than last year. Pole last year was a 1.37.5

:53:01. > :53:06.and so I think we can safely say they should be beating that this

:53:06. > :53:15.afternoon. Indeed. As you are talking about the track rubbering

:53:15. > :53:19.in, last year there was 3 at 3 -- 3.5 seconds between practice and

:53:19. > :53:23.qualifying. There's a fuel effect as well. At this moment in

:53:23. > :53:32.qualifying you run the minimum amount of fuel required to do the

:53:32. > :53:38.time. They need an out lap, a timed lap and in lap. They probably have

:53:38. > :53:48.about ten kilos of fuel or board or maybe slightly less. Ten kilos,

:53:48. > :53:51.imagine going in the gym picking up a 10 kilo weight to accelerate,

:53:51. > :53:55.turn around the track, it would be a third of a second slower. It

:53:55. > :53:59.can't be that direct. It is. It is measurable in terms of the weight

:54:00. > :54:04.of the car. That's the incredible thing about Formula One.

:54:04. > :54:07.Everything's so precise and exact. In a constantly changing

:54:07. > :54:13.environment with track temperatures and all those other things, it's

:54:13. > :54:21.one thing you can guarantee. If it's projected to be three tenths

:54:21. > :54:26.of a second, you drive a clean lap, it will cost you that. Cost per lap

:54:26. > :54:30.of fuel and death, also taxes are the three certain things in the

:54:30. > :54:36.world. We must establish would will go through to the second part of

:54:36. > :54:42.qualifying, which 17 drivers will continue in this session, as we see

:54:42. > :54:47.the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso, a local hero. No doubt about that.

:54:47. > :54:51.You have to say, Ferrari look handy so far. Yeah, they've been

:54:51. > :54:56.certainly putting in some quick lap times. They know where the glory

:54:56. > :55:00.comeles is on Sunday with the checkered flag. It looks like

:55:01. > :55:06.they've been trying to extract the maximum from this car in the

:55:06. > :55:12.practice session. Alonso was four tenths down on Vettel in the

:55:12. > :55:18.morning session. The crowd appreciates seeing the local hero.

:55:18. > :55:22.A bit of traffic ahead of him. Who's that? It's Kovalainen in the

:55:22. > :55:26.Lotus. He's backed way out. That would have cost him a little bit of

:55:26. > :55:33.time on the run down to turn one, which I guess you would claim isn't

:55:33. > :55:38.really a corner. We markably we have 25 designated corners on this

:55:38. > :55:42.race track, when you drive the circuit you can only count about 12.

:55:42. > :55:47.I'm fussy on my corners. There are some around here that don't count

:55:47. > :55:54.as corners to me. Let's invite Mr Kravitz into the commentary.

:55:54. > :56:02.there I am. Just to give you a little update from practice, so -

:56:02. > :56:06.am I coming and going? I will move forward into the pit lane. Kamui

:56:06. > :56:10.Kobayashi stuck into the wall the end of practice. He was late

:56:10. > :56:16.getting his car ready. He's out there and OK. The top guys are out

:56:16. > :56:22.there on the harder tyre, getting a baseline and establishing a banker

:56:22. > :56:26.lap in case somebody hits the wall. Ferrari, Dark Horse, excuse the pun,

:56:26. > :56:30.for many, for this session. They're going a different way on strategy

:56:30. > :56:35.with front wings. Fernando Alonso choosing a different front wing to

:56:35. > :56:40.Felipe Massa, just because they like the feel of that. A triple

:56:40. > :56:48.element one for Alonso, double element for Massa. Just driver

:56:48. > :56:52.preference? Drirch -- driver preference. They will have taken

:56:52. > :56:57.what the driver feels F there was one clearly quicker, they'd both

:56:57. > :57:01.have it on there. Maybe they only have one servicable unit. So it's

:57:01. > :57:05.gone to whoever they're designated number one driver, which you have

:57:05. > :57:09.to presume is Alonso. Fighting the car there in the last corner. That

:57:09. > :57:13.didn't look at all pretty. That would have cost further time.

:57:13. > :57:18.Looked like he was hanging wall paper on a windy day with the

:57:18. > :57:23.window open there. He was fighting that car. His trace afterwards will

:57:23. > :57:28.look like a hack saw when they see that, as he was really struggling

:57:28. > :57:33.get the Ferrari into the final hairpin. Sebastien Vettel, white

:57:33. > :57:38.crested helmet today. He keeps changing his crash helmet colours

:57:38. > :57:42.each race weekend. I was fascinated to read when he wins a Grand Prixs

:57:42. > :57:46.those overalways, helmet and gloves get put to one side, which is,

:57:46. > :57:52.there's going to be a big wardrobe, when it's finished in a few years'

:57:52. > :57:56.time. There's modern generation have cottoned on the memorabilia

:57:56. > :58:01.value. They keep their cars ond their contract, keep gloves,

:58:01. > :58:07.trophies, everything they can, saving up for their retirement.

:58:07. > :58:11.think it will be on eBay when he's retired? Jenson Button then has not

:58:11. > :58:14.yet put a competitive lap time in. This is his first flying lap. He's

:58:14. > :58:21.the fastest man in the middle sector. Kovalainen in seventh place

:58:21. > :58:27.doing a good job for Lotus, just behind Renault. Jenson really

:58:27. > :58:33.struggling on these tyres to get the car into the corner. Still a

:58:33. > :58:39.1.39.6. These are steady times. At the moment we saw 37.2, albeit on

:58:39. > :58:45.the faster tyre. Maybe the temperature is taking its toll.

:58:45. > :58:50.Track temperature is higher. That will affect the performance of the

:58:50. > :58:56.car. The tyre is worse, copy that. We need to halve it from this lap.

:58:56. > :59:02.That's interesting, need to harvest on this lap. That's referring to

:59:02. > :59:07.the KERS system. That presumably means he's got underbraking, the

:59:07. > :59:12.KERS system, they're saying don't use it until it's fully charged up.

:59:12. > :59:15.I think it was his saying he will have to. I heard that he said he

:59:15. > :59:18.will have to. Any way, he's definitely saying that the tyres

:59:18. > :59:22.are not working as well that's was in the morning session. That's

:59:22. > :59:25.reflected in the lap times. You come out of the morning session

:59:25. > :59:28.saying right don't touch the car, I'm happy with the balance. You

:59:28. > :59:33.come to a session a couple of hours later, higher track temperature and

:59:33. > :59:38.oh, no, the balance has changed. The only thing they have available

:59:38. > :59:43.is front wing adjustment, tyre pressures, deferential, adjustment

:59:44. > :59:48.in the cockpit. Other than that you're fixed with the car you have.

:59:48. > :59:57.There are firm regulations where they can change very little on the

:59:57. > :00:04.car. As soon as they roll out from the timing baem - Vettel is has a

:00:04. > :00:14.personal best. He will go fastest I believe. He does indeed on a 1.39.3.

:00:14. > :00:24.

:00:24. > :00:34.Kovaleinen, Rubens Barrichello. Paul di Resta. Timo Glock in 17th.

:00:34. > :00:36.

:00:36. > :00:42.We have not yet seen Jimmy Alguersuari. Quite brave of

:00:42. > :00:50.Alguersuari. He did not to any practice in practice number two

:00:50. > :00:58.yesterday. Presumably, he does not have a problem with the car and he

:00:58. > :01:07.is being very brave. It will not be the softer option. We can see Nico

:01:07. > :01:16.Rosberg getting ready to finish his lap. Hiya has his sector been? He

:01:16. > :01:20.is in 7th place so far. 1.5 seconds off the pace. Jensen Button, the

:01:21. > :01:26.winner last time out in Canada with that sensational victory. It may

:01:26. > :01:31.have been the longest race in Formula One history. 46 mph average,

:01:31. > :01:39.nearly half of the race was covered behind the safety car and we still

:01:39. > :01:43.absolutely loved it. Jensen Button attacking the race. The fastest man

:01:43. > :01:47.through the first sector so far in qualifying. And through that

:01:47. > :01:52.sweeping section towards the end. There are a couple of wonderful

:01:52. > :02:02.camera angles on the wall which we occasionally see. Still on the

:02:02. > :02:02.

:02:02. > :02:10.Prime tyres, this law. -- this law. Jensen Button stays second but

:02:10. > :02:13.improves his time with just one 10th child of Sebastian Vettel.

:02:13. > :02:22.Hamilton, we are beginning to see a surprise attack from the McLaren

:02:22. > :02:27.team. Looking close, David? It is at this stage but this is also on

:02:27. > :02:31.about dropping those seven cars. Everything from 18 down. Rather

:02:31. > :02:39.surprising. We have a few of the guys who would have expected to be

:02:39. > :02:46.in that drop son, they are not out yet. -- drop zone. They should all

:02:46. > :02:52.get through. We have seen Alguersuari struggle to get through

:02:52. > :03:00.and clear this first hurdle. Alguersuari playing it very cool

:03:00. > :03:04.and only just now coming out on the soft tyres. Interesting on Williams,

:03:04. > :03:12.they have come back with a very major step, they have abandoned

:03:12. > :03:18.their new exhaust. Both Barrichello and modern Ando have gone back to

:03:18. > :03:24.the middle of the exit exhaust. think we heard Rubens Barrichello

:03:24. > :03:29.say the car is definitely worse. Clearly, it is about changing the

:03:29. > :03:34.car as they have gone into qualifying. He does not like it. If

:03:34. > :03:38.I heard him correctly. Getting brave and coming out very late.

:03:38. > :03:45.They have put the quick tyres on straight away but that does buy

:03:45. > :03:51.them and you set of tyres for tomorrow's race? The strategy has

:03:51. > :03:56.been different, we have seen such variation in the lap times during

:03:56. > :04:00.the Grand Prix, cars that have started well out of normal position

:04:00. > :04:04.have been able to come through and score serious points because of the

:04:04. > :04:08.right tyres at the right time. This might be one of those strategic

:04:08. > :04:15.qualifying sessions because of the huge gap between hard and soft

:04:15. > :04:24.tyres. Not looking particularly strong. Kobayashi lost time with

:04:24. > :04:29.his throttle. It has not been that smoothest of runs so far. Hodder

:04:29. > :04:34.Surrey, starting his first flying lap with five and three-quarter

:04:34. > :04:44.minutes remaining. Still Sebastian Vettel, Hamilton. Flick a mass in

:04:44. > :04:58.

:04:58. > :05:05.six. -- Felipe Massa. A tin cars on on a soft tyres. The option, as it

:05:05. > :05:15.is called. Mercedes Benz feeling the need to go out on a softer

:05:15. > :05:17.

:05:17. > :05:23.rubber. I am surprised by that. Within 1.3 seconds off the pace

:05:23. > :05:31.this morning. He would not think they were in real danger of being

:05:31. > :05:36.outside position 17. That will only leave them with two sets of options.

:05:36. > :05:42.But in Canada, we have seen the only ran once in the first part of

:05:42. > :05:49.qualifying for the very reason of saving the tyres. Alguersuari. He

:05:49. > :05:56.made that work. Sebastien Buemi in 4th place for Toro Rosso. Timo

:05:57. > :06:01.Glock in the drop zone. Alguersuari still to put his time in. If they

:06:01. > :06:07.do a good time with Kobayashi under pressure, they might be able to get

:06:07. > :06:14.in and get some tyres on. Paul di Resta had a very slow start after

:06:14. > :06:22.Hulkenberg crashed his car. He seemed to get on to the pace very

:06:22. > :06:26.quickly. He drove here for Force India last year. You drove and one

:06:26. > :06:31.of them, David? We will talk about the track in the early part of

:06:31. > :06:41.qualifying. We will now focus on the last three. The last three

:06:41. > :06:51.minutes of this session. Pastor Maldonado, three-tenths of the

:06:51. > :07:07.

:07:07. > :07:16.Canada the best of those we were teams had to allow him into the

:07:16. > :07:19.race? Yes, that was on the there for the new teams coming in and

:07:19. > :07:23.teams that might have a design flaw with their car and there could be a

:07:23. > :07:29.danger to others. All those teams have shown they are capable of

:07:29. > :07:34.getting within the pace and racing responsibly. We will see what

:07:34. > :07:39.Pastor Maldonado does. Felipe Massa, so strong over the weekend on the

:07:39. > :07:47.soft tyres. We are hearing that he is burning up, he only has three

:07:47. > :07:52.sets of us. Up into 6th place. This is what we're seeing with those who

:07:52. > :07:56.chose a different compounds, there is such a big lap time difference

:07:56. > :08:01.between them and it is Paul di Resta and Kobayashi at the moment

:08:01. > :08:05.under pressure. Kovaleinen is in for Lotus. We will see some pretty

:08:05. > :08:12.frantic efforts at the end and Paul di Resta goes over the line now.

:08:12. > :08:16.Gets himself into p 9. Rubens Barrichello, up to 11. That has put

:08:16. > :08:24.Kobayashi firmly into the drop zone at the moment. Rosberg is knocking

:08:24. > :08:29.on the door. He is currently on a very fast lap indeed. Rosberg, 4th

:08:29. > :08:35.place. Kobayashi, starting up, he is a man under pressure, he has got

:08:35. > :08:40.traffic ahead of him. Mark Webber is out on track, his Mark Webber in

:08:41. > :08:47.the drops and? Traffic could be a critical issue for a major shock.

:08:47. > :08:53.Felipe Massa, still down there as well. Proper traffic jam out there.

:08:53. > :08:58.20 cars on the racetrack and only four of them in the pit and several

:08:58. > :09:03.drivers beginning to struggle Kobayashi is well inside the top 17

:09:03. > :09:09.on the slap. Mark Webber is catching Rubens Barrichello and

:09:09. > :09:14.Paul di Resta. He needs a clear track at the moment, otherwise we

:09:14. > :09:18.could be in for an amazing shock, here. He is coming behind Rubens

:09:18. > :09:26.Barrichello, he will get out of the way, he has done his lap. Mark

:09:26. > :09:31.Webber, about four tents adrift of the quickest in that sector. That

:09:31. > :09:41.is a tents down. In that sector. This will be close. It would be

:09:41. > :09:46.great if we can get a camera angle of 10 to see whether traffickers.

:09:46. > :09:50.We will see Sauber as well. Mark Webber, he has caught Paul di Resta

:09:50. > :09:56.quite quickly. He will get another lap if he needs it, which is very

:09:56. > :10:04.important indeed. Mark Webber crosses the line, 14. He is in for

:10:04. > :10:11.now. And finally, here is Kobayashi to personal bests so far. He goes

:10:11. > :10:16.up to only 16th. Felipe Massa under pressure. He is flying out there on

:10:16. > :10:26.the soft tyres. Kovaleinen, could use for the day of many of the big

:10:26. > :10:26.

:10:26. > :10:31.runners? He has got to personal best so far. The other front-

:10:31. > :10:39.runners have not used the soft tyre. Kovaleinen, can he pull off a

:10:39. > :10:49.shock? No, he goes over the line, goes faster but stays 19th. Felipe

:10:49. > :10:50.

:10:50. > :10:55.Massa, presumably, will go P1. One set of tyres burned up, it is a bit

:10:55. > :11:05.of a glory moment. But it isn't going to... As long as you get

:11:05. > :11:11.through, it is a resit. Jarno Trulli. Well wide through there. At

:11:11. > :11:16.the moment, he is 20th, just behind... Will, he spins. He got

:11:16. > :11:19.dirt on to his tyres coming out of what would have been turn number 20.

:11:19. > :11:23.We have seen a lot of people running out on to the artificial

:11:23. > :11:28.grass and when you have that dust on your tyres, you're braking into

:11:28. > :11:38.churn number 25. It will not pick a big difference to his qualifying

:11:38. > :11:43.

:11:43. > :11:49.position. He went very wide. That was a little bit sloppy. Jarno

:11:49. > :11:53.Trulli, he says, what if I can't get of a competitive driver? I

:11:53. > :11:58.quite fancied America. That has all the hallmarks of a driver getting

:11:58. > :12:01.ready to call time on his Formula One career? If he enjoys the

:12:01. > :12:05.journey of helping the team developed, he is the right man for

:12:05. > :12:13.the job but it is unlikely Lotus will go from this position to a

:12:13. > :12:20.front-runner. Alguersuari. Toro Rosso, the third consecutive race.

:12:20. > :12:29.He falls at the first hurdle. These are for the grid positions.

:12:29. > :12:39.Alguersuari, Kovaleinen, Jarno Trulli, Timo Glock, Narain

:12:39. > :12:39.

:12:39. > :12:49.Karthikeyan is 24th place on the grid. The leaders do not but the

:12:49. > :12:49.

:12:49. > :12:53.soft tyres on and that helps. -- did not put the Saltires on.

:12:53. > :13:01.Everybody qualifiers and the back seven will line up in that order.

:13:02. > :13:08.And on home turf, it is proving to be difficult times for Alguersuari.

:13:08. > :13:16.He will still be looking in his murders. Their test driver, there.

:13:17. > :13:26.Just confirming. Timo Glock, 21st on the grid. He holds the lap

:13:27. > :13:29.

:13:29. > :13:36.record at this race track. Always set in race conditions, lap records.

:13:36. > :13:46.Only 21st place today. This is the tail-end of the top 10. Fernando

:13:46. > :13:47.

:13:47. > :13:57.Alonso only in 30. Paul di Resta in 14. Mark Webber, 16th. Look at that.

:13:57. > :14:02.And last man into qualifying, Kobayashi. They will now line-up in

:14:02. > :14:09.that grid order. Subject, of course, to any gearbox penalties or engine

:14:09. > :14:12.changes. Eddie Jordan and myself have decamped to the back of the

:14:12. > :14:19.Ludus carriage, not much call for those tyres at the moment.

:14:19. > :14:24.Intermediate and wet tyres. -- Lotus garage. Let's go through that

:14:24. > :14:28.session. It was a big shock for notice and also for Mark Webber?

:14:28. > :14:33.Martin Brundle was fighting with himself, lucky or unlucky? Probably

:14:33. > :14:40.lucky? In that position, you have all those other cars guaranteed to

:14:40. > :14:43.be much slower. They are in your way, so it was a mistake as far as

:14:44. > :14:48.the team is concerned to allow Mark Webber to only qualify in 16. It's

:14:48. > :14:53.not good enough. And how pleased a week to be joined by Heikki

:14:53. > :15:01.Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli. Feel free to have a chat. It looked for

:15:01. > :15:06.a moment like he would give us a big shock, how close were you?

:15:06. > :15:09.think it is still a reasonable gap. In any case, for us the focus is

:15:09. > :15:16.still to get the maximum out of the car and out of ourselves. Every

:15:16. > :15:24.time. The performance welcome later on. We are working hard every day.

:15:24. > :15:29.It might not seem like that but I am pleased. And we will get there

:15:29. > :15:33.eventually. I have to ask a question, you have recently been

:15:33. > :15:43.reported as saying, I don't fancy America, and would like to do them

:15:43. > :15:48.

:15:48. > :15:53.on? I have never said that. -- Le Mans. That is the way it is. For no

:15:53. > :16:01.one? It's just speculation. At the moment I was complaining about my

:16:02. > :16:09.power steering rather than anything else! We saw 1.5 seconds into Q 2,

:16:09. > :16:13.are the team keeping you happy enough? We are making good progress

:16:13. > :16:18.and if you see from time to time, depending on the track, we are very

:16:18. > :16:23.close. Definitely, this isn't a track for us, because a lot of the

:16:23. > :16:33.long straights means we don't have the care system. Can you explain

:16:33. > :16:37.

:16:37. > :16:41.put a lap in. I was trying everything, then I spun off.

:16:41. > :16:46.were regarded as the expert pole maker. Your team-mate is out

:16:46. > :16:50.qualifying you at the moment? not really driving at the moment. I

:16:51. > :16:55.don't have front power steering, so I'm far off from being able to push

:16:55. > :17:00.myself. So obviously I never expect to be in front of him this year as

:17:00. > :17:03.far as the power steering is not working properly for me. As we ask

:17:03. > :17:08.that question, a great big grin on the face of Heikki Kovalainen.

:17:08. > :17:13.Thank you for joining us for that quick track. Now let's head back

:17:13. > :17:17.for the second part of qualifying. Which has just begun. 15 minutes

:17:17. > :17:21.then of this session to lose another seven drivers. David,

:17:21. > :17:26.you've qualified and raced in this Grand Prix, put the viewers behind

:17:26. > :17:29.the steering wheel of a Formula One car. As we said in the first part

:17:29. > :17:34.of qualifying, there's 25 designated corners. That's defined

:17:34. > :17:38.by a little sensor within the FIA data recorder in the car. In

:17:38. > :17:41.reality, of those 25 corners, there's probably only 12 of them

:17:42. > :17:46.that the driver has to make any sort of braking and turning and

:17:46. > :17:50.gear selection-type decisions. The rest are just sweeping, drifting

:17:50. > :17:54.through the walls that they build around this temporary facility.

:17:54. > :17:58.They're not really challenging at all. But nonetheless, they are

:17:58. > :18:05.classed as having pulled more than a G, as much as you would pull in a

:18:05. > :18:11.normal road car. I found out just last week that most passengers are

:18:11. > :18:16.comfortable with about half a G as a consistent amount of lateral load.

:18:16. > :18:21.Useful information there? Yeah, thanks for that. Back on track.

:18:21. > :18:24.big challenge here is a lot of long straights. You have to compromise,

:18:24. > :18:28.like in Canada, between having not too much downforce that you lose

:18:28. > :18:32.time on the straights, but enough that you can nail your braking. I

:18:32. > :18:35.think around this track for DRS, which they can use, the drag

:18:35. > :18:39.reduction system, they can use that everywhere during qualifying,

:18:39. > :18:43.everywhere the driver is brave enough to push it, there's 57% of

:18:43. > :18:49.this lap. So just over three kilometres of this 5.4 kilometre

:18:49. > :18:53.track where they can have the DRS open. That gives them as least ten

:18:53. > :18:56.to 15 kilometres an hour, maybe more actually, every team,

:18:56. > :19:01.depending on the design of the rear wing, will gain more or less than

:19:01. > :19:06.the competition. That gives them sizeable performance advantage.

:19:06. > :19:10.It's well over a second in qualifying being able to use DRS.

:19:10. > :19:16.There's a perfect example, Felipe Massa with his rear wing wide-open.

:19:16. > :19:20.On the tyres it says there, soft tyre. That's the same soft tyre

:19:20. > :19:24.that Felipe Massa qualified -- finished qualifying one with. New

:19:25. > :19:33.soft for Button, Webber, Alonso, Vettel and Hamilton. From the end

:19:33. > :19:39.of Q one, Hamilton so close on the hard tyre to Vettel. Looks like

:19:39. > :19:43.Mclaren have found some speed. where you see a new graphic that

:19:43. > :19:47.said "soft, medium or hard" it's not the driver's attitude. It's the

:19:47. > :19:52.tyres he set the fastest time on. Massa going for a second run on

:19:52. > :19:56.those tyres, the one that got him through into this session. They do

:19:56. > :20:00.appear to be lasting reasonably well it seems. I don't think it's a

:20:00. > :20:03.question that they're a qualifying tyre that's good for one lap and

:20:03. > :20:06.one lap only. They appear to go a little bit further than that before

:20:06. > :20:13.they start to give up on the grid. But as you can see, carers sliding

:20:13. > :20:19.around here a lot. I think there'll be a lot of discarded rubber, calls

:20:19. > :20:23.the marbles, on the outside of the crack tomorrow. Green flags are

:20:23. > :20:29.waving sm. Circuits do that, as you come out of the pits. I think it

:20:29. > :20:35.mean there's are no yellows. We had a car spin at turn 25. That was six

:20:35. > :20:40.minutes ago. So some circuits do that in the world and some don't. I

:20:40. > :20:43.find it disconcerting, you get flags waving at you and you're not

:20:43. > :20:47.sure why they're out there. drivers would have information.

:20:47. > :20:52.They have a little sensor in the cockpit which displays if they

:20:52. > :20:57.enter a blue flag zone or yellow zone, then that comes up on the

:20:57. > :21:03.dashboard as well. The flags are there as a belt and braces. Felipe

:21:03. > :21:09.Massa then, the fastest we've seen in qualifying so far. We see Mark

:21:09. > :21:16.Webber out on a set of those soft tyres. Let's see what Red Bull can

:21:16. > :21:21.show us then. We're getting down to the serious

:21:21. > :21:25.business of sorting out the grid. Mark Webber into the last corner.

:21:25. > :21:30.Great traction, good sling slot down the pit straight, easing it

:21:30. > :21:37.through turn one. Braking zone then, Fernando Alonso in the background.

:21:37. > :21:41.Webber has done 38.0. Alonso a 37.9 to go faster still. 37.2 was the

:21:42. > :21:46.best time this morning from this man, Sebastien Vettel. He's purple

:21:46. > :21:50.and purple, the fastest man in the first and middle sector, just this

:21:50. > :21:55.sweeping right hander, heavy braking zone, into the last corner.

:21:55. > :22:02.Patient on the throttle, keep to the right-hand side. Up the gearbox

:22:02. > :22:09.and Vettel goes to a 37.3, take that. It's .6 faster. Button is

:22:09. > :22:14.into second place now on a 37.7. So Vettel from Button, Alonso, Webber,

:22:14. > :22:24.Massa, Sutil right in there. Paul di Resta too. Sixth and seventh.

:22:24. > :22:31.

:22:31. > :22:36.Hamilton goes second now. Matching his team-mate Button. But about 010

:22:36. > :22:41.faster. Heidfeld is in there as well. We're looking for the top ten.

:22:41. > :22:46.The fastest ten to go into the shoot-off. Nico Rosberg on a 138.3.

:22:46. > :22:50.You have to say he was outshone by Michael Schumacher in Canada in the

:22:50. > :22:54.changeable conditions. Schumacher, for me, the first time we've really

:22:54. > :22:59.seen the old Schumacher at the wheel was two weeks ago in Canada.

:22:59. > :23:05.He's looked punchy around here as well. What has Michael Schumacher

:23:05. > :23:09.got in answer to the other front runners? A bit of traffic ahead.

:23:09. > :23:12.Let's see if that will get out of the way. It's Maldonado. Then just

:23:12. > :23:18.up the road he's got Kobayashi as well.

:23:18. > :23:25.Little lift through there. wouldn't have expected that. You

:23:25. > :23:31.would have expected him to be flat through there, unless he had the

:23:31. > :23:35.DRS open already. He's expecting to be behind Red Bull. There shouldn't

:23:35. > :23:39.be big surprise there. Unlike Michael, as he goes eighth at this

:23:39. > :23:44.moment. He's a reasonable distance from his team-mate, Nico Rosberg.

:23:44. > :23:49.We've got Maldonado stopped there between those, showing as the last

:23:49. > :23:53.sector, but that's not the last sector. They might have to red flag

:23:54. > :23:57.that. That's a tricky position. Blind entry there. You can cover it

:23:57. > :24:07.with double wave yellows. Marshals on track, slow down and be prepared

:24:07. > :24:11.to stop. The marshals doing a great job there. Down at 18, isn't it?

:24:11. > :24:16.It's for the marshals to get the car into neutral. I wonder if they

:24:16. > :24:19.might have to red flag. This There's no black line, so he hasn't

:24:19. > :24:23.spun into that position. I think he's had an issue with the car and

:24:23. > :24:29.tried to drive away. You can see it is stuck in gear, they're rocking

:24:29. > :24:34.the car there. There's a reservoir of hydraulic energy to open the

:24:34. > :24:38.clutch that the driver can press and also the marshals can press.

:24:38. > :24:42.Absolutely. You concur there's no tell-tale black marks to suggest

:24:42. > :24:47.he's had an incident as a driver. Must be a car failure. I agree with

:24:47. > :24:57.you. Looks like he's just been parachuted in there for the show.

:24:57. > :25:00.So, where will the crane come from to lift the car.

:25:01. > :25:05.The clock stops, eight minutes remaining. The only down side for

:25:05. > :25:09.those out there on fresh tyres, is that they've used the best of them.

:25:09. > :25:16.The man doing that was Fernando Alonso, who was on a very hot lap

:25:16. > :25:22.indeed. Let's see who else was out there at the time? Schumacher had

:25:22. > :25:32.done his time. Alonso and Webber and Massa were all starting a lap.

:25:32. > :25:36.Rosberg, Heidfeld, Hamilton and co had finished his. Buemi is

:25:36. > :25:42.currently 17th of the 17 runners because he's yet to set a time in

:25:42. > :25:45.the same way that Vitaly Petrov has yet to leave the pits. They're

:25:45. > :25:49.playing Dan dare with the clock again at the end of the session

:25:49. > :25:53.hoping their drivers can get a lap in. We've seen tears over that one

:25:53. > :25:58.as well. But it saves you a set of tyres. So it's a gamble that they

:25:58. > :26:04.feel, clearly, is worth taking. There's the answer to where is the

:26:04. > :26:08.crane coming from, David, it's got a diesel engine and four wheels.

:26:08. > :26:12.Let's hope they're more careful removing this car than in Canada,

:26:12. > :26:18.last week, when they brought Lewis Hamilton's car back. It was

:26:18. > :26:23.bouncing off the Tarmac, doing all sorts of additional damage. The

:26:23. > :26:28.Spanish marshals seem to be giving it loving tender care. The reason

:26:28. > :26:33.why the car obviously leans back is the weight distribution. A bit more

:26:33. > :26:37.rearward in this car, at that lifting point. Maldonado out

:26:37. > :26:42.qualified Barrichello for the last three Grand Prix. A winner here in

:26:42. > :26:47.GP2, a circuit he quite likes, but unfortunately he's not on it any

:26:47. > :26:50.more. We heard from the radio feet it's -- feed it's more likely to be

:26:50. > :26:54.mechanical and fuel pump throttle related rather than the gearbox

:26:54. > :27:00.seizing. I'm told that he was told to turn his fuel pump on shortly

:27:00. > :27:04.before the car ground it a halt. I don't imagine that they would have

:27:04. > :27:09.short fuelled him. They're a professional team. They would have

:27:09. > :27:13.known what they're doing. They would put enough fuel in for his

:27:13. > :27:18.run. Maybe it's just a fuel pressure failure. Weal' hear from

:27:18. > :27:22.the team shortly. That's what it looks like at the moment. The

:27:22. > :27:32.drivers disadvantaged, Kobayashi who was on a decent run, Perez,

:27:32. > :27:32.

:27:32. > :27:37.Buemi. We're about to see what you've been explaining. Coasting

:27:37. > :27:41.around clearly in trouble, being told of traffic approaching

:27:41. > :27:51.otherwise he'll get a penalty on the grid. He accelerates away. It's

:27:51. > :27:57.down at the end here, where it all comes to a grinding halt at turn 17.

:27:57. > :28:02.No, he's waiting for another driver to go through. Quite an adventure

:28:03. > :28:10.for a non-lap isn't it? That's uncomfortable to be in the middle

:28:10. > :28:14.of that turn, the middle of 19, where the cars are flat ou. Worst

:28:14. > :28:18.case scenario for a driver. You have an issue. You can't power away

:28:18. > :28:24.from the line. At that moment, his eyes would have been firmly on his

:28:24. > :28:27.mirrors. It's a blind wall there, isn't it. I would think all the pit

:28:27. > :28:31.lane Charlie Whiting and co in the stewards office would be thinking

:28:31. > :28:34.why didn't he turn left there and get the car away from the race

:28:34. > :28:41.track. But he desperately wanted to get back to the pits. Because if

:28:41. > :28:48.you don't get back to the pits under your own steam, you are out

:28:48. > :28:51.of qualifying. Sebastien Vettel staying cool, a man who's never

:28:51. > :28:57.finished lower than second this year. The only man in the field to

:28:57. > :29:02.have been on the podium in every Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso must

:29:02. > :29:08.fancy his chances. He's always saying "I can still win this

:29:08. > :29:13.title." He's beginning to give up on that one a bit this year. But

:29:13. > :29:17.there's a long way to go yet. Who know what's may happen. Remember

:29:18. > :29:21.back several stone last year, he announced he could still win the

:29:21. > :29:27.world championship, he was the same distance behind the leader at that

:29:27. > :29:31.point. It went down to the finale in Abu Dhabi. I don't think it's

:29:31. > :29:39.idol chat. I think he firmly believes it. Never gives up does

:29:39. > :29:44.Fernando Alonso. Mark Webber, what's interesting for me Mark

:29:44. > :29:48.Webber, who's yet to lead a lap this year, and Vettel's led 80% of

:29:48. > :29:51.the laps, but Mark's had four fastest laps in the Grand Prix.

:29:51. > :29:56.He's been fast. It just will not work out for him. He has the pace.

:29:56. > :30:02.Theres no doubt about it. Sebastien Vettel, how many fastest laps does

:30:02. > :30:07.he have so far in Grand Prix? Zero. Those are facts. But a bit like

:30:07. > :30:12.Felipe Massa has been quickest in four of the first seven qualifying

:30:12. > :30:17.sessions in Q1, but that doesn't count for anything. The only thing

:30:17. > :30:21.that counts in a race is where your position is at the chequered flag.

:30:21. > :30:24.The same here. The only thing that stands between Mark and leading a

:30:24. > :30:34.lap and winning the Grand Prix is qualifying in front of his team-

:30:34. > :30:41.

:30:41. > :30:46.We have only got four cars on the race track. Sebastien Buemi now

:30:46. > :30:56.goes on to the track. I'm looking around, Kobayashi, Rubens

:30:56. > :31:00.

:31:00. > :31:03.Barrichello, petrol. -- Vitaly Petrov. This top 10 shoot-out.

:31:03. > :31:10.Still lots of strange noises as they go on and off the throttle on

:31:10. > :31:14.the slow corners. On to the four cylinders. I drove this thing last

:31:15. > :31:22.week and I just could not believe how much grip and poise and balance

:31:22. > :31:32.these latest form of a one cars have. They're just Supreme to drive.

:31:32. > :31:38.But someone else out there will be have the 10th quicker. -- will be

:31:38. > :31:43.half of a 10th of a second quicker. You're moaning about the quick

:31:43. > :31:48.corners and the exit, you don't go, perfect, perfect. You are right,

:31:48. > :31:55.you still on, that is your job. Moan about it until it goes just a

:31:55. > :32:01.little bit faster and then moan again. Up against that wall, it

:32:01. > :32:08.always seems quite tight. That turned into four and five. And then

:32:09. > :32:18.we come to were the DRS might be. It's an unusual feature on this

:32:19. > :32:20.

:32:20. > :32:24.track. I am surprised, I thought once they were locked in, but that

:32:24. > :32:30.is actually when it opens up. Kobayashi, through this long

:32:30. > :32:37.straight. This first section of the DRS in tomorrow's race, it is a

:32:37. > :32:42.double drag reduction system. And the second will be on this exit.

:32:42. > :32:51.Enter the exit of this tight section. Again, through what is

:32:51. > :32:56.effectively the straight. But it has several bends in it! We should

:32:56. > :33:05.see plenty of action there. Double DRS, that would be more effective

:33:05. > :33:10.you. In Canada, there was not enough space. You kind of use all

:33:10. > :33:17.the race track there. Whereas here, it would be less easy to defend and

:33:17. > :33:21.another lock up for Kobayashi. Right into the wall at the end. And

:33:21. > :33:26.Kobayashi goes on the 13th, confirming that Sauber are

:33:26. > :33:31.struggling. And another man with a lot brake. And right at the end,

:33:31. > :33:38.Rubens Barrichello blows it. And you can see the smoke on the tyre,

:33:38. > :33:45.that vibration will be horrible. That keeps him in two p 12. And

:33:45. > :33:51.Therese, then, does 39.6 and he is only 15. He says, and I feel fine.

:33:51. > :33:56.He had to pull out of Canada. He will not feel good when he sees

:33:56. > :34:01.that lap time on his dashboard. Vitaly Petrov, finally coming

:34:01. > :34:05.through. Putting in a competitive lap time. He is 9th at the moment,

:34:05. > :34:12.matching Michael Schumacher. Sebastien Buemi, what can he do for

:34:12. > :34:16.Toro Rosso? He stays 17th with that. Plenty of work to do. That is their

:34:16. > :34:26.right thing, Alguersuari has the embarrassment of dropping out. But

:34:26. > :34:27.

:34:27. > :34:32.at the moment he will stark white alongside him on the grid. Three

:34:32. > :34:35.and three-quarter minutes remaining, who is under pressure? At the

:34:35. > :34:39.minute, the top six are not bothering, Michael Schumacher did

:34:39. > :34:45.feel the need to get out there and put in a better lap, he is half a

:34:45. > :34:49.second adrift of the fastest time at the moment. But he has done to

:34:49. > :34:59.personal bests. And this is all about confirming that he can be in

:34:59. > :35:04.the top 10. He can be under pressure. They all have to cross

:35:04. > :35:09.the line before the flag drops. Michael Schumacher, his rear wing

:35:09. > :35:18.wide open. He moves up into P6. Schumacher, it looks like you have

:35:18. > :35:28.to get under 1:38.5 to get into the top 10. Felipe Massa is out there.

:35:28. > :35:31.

:35:31. > :35:41.Nick Heidfeld, he has got to a personal best. -- two personal

:35:41. > :35:41.

:35:41. > :35:45.bests. Do arrester, doing a personal best. -- Paul di Resta.

:35:45. > :35:51.Just to confirm the top five. They have ended up in the pits,

:35:52. > :35:56.satisfied with their work. Schumacher is out there. Nico

:35:57. > :36:01.Rosberg did stay in the pits, he has not gone out. Nine cars or on

:36:01. > :36:07.the track, 13 seconds remaining, Paul di Resta gets well out of

:36:07. > :36:14.shape on that artificial grass. Again, that is a personal best, one

:36:14. > :36:20.10th down on Adrian Sutil. Struggling to get that horse power

:36:20. > :36:25.into the race track and he will now be about qualified by Adrian Sutil.

:36:25. > :36:30.Whatever he achieves, because he is already ahead of him. And Adrian

:36:31. > :36:40.Sutil cross as a line. Can he get into the top 10? He does! Vitaly

:36:41. > :36:41.

:36:41. > :36:47.Petrov has backed out. The Adrian Sutil makes it. There is nobody out

:36:47. > :36:53.there who can make the difference we now know the next seven to drop

:36:53. > :37:01.out. Vitaly Petrov, Paul di Resta, he will start in 12, Rubens

:37:01. > :37:06.Barrichello, Kobayashi, Pastor Maldonado, 15th, Sergio Perez,

:37:06. > :37:12.Sebastien Buemi. Barrichello has completed another lap but it was

:37:12. > :37:18.not any faster. And that cost Paul di Resta. It would be amazing if

:37:18. > :37:27.that was on his best lap as well. Too many adventures for Paul di

:37:27. > :37:34.Resta. That was on his fastest lap. The car scraping down the ground.

:37:34. > :37:42.Paul di Resta will start the Grand Prix in 12th place. Nevertheless,

:37:43. > :37:52.that is a very good job... Good job. The reason why he says that his he

:37:53. > :37:55.

:37:55. > :38:05.did not get any practice. Nico Rosberg, he race for Williams last

:38:05. > :38:10.

:38:10. > :38:19.year. Paul di Resta, pushing hard. Still four-tenths white. Good job

:38:19. > :38:26.from Adrian Sutil to get himself into that top 10 shoot-out. Rubens

:38:26. > :38:30.Barrichello ahead of Pastor Maldonado. Sergio Perez will be

:38:30. > :38:39.disappointed with 60 of his. Sebastien Buemi does indeed line-up

:38:39. > :38:41.just ahead of his team-mate, Alguersuari. 17th and 18th.

:38:41. > :38:45.Congratulations to Adrian Sutil, making it through to the final part

:38:45. > :38:49.of the qualifying but frustration for Paul di Resta, who has had a

:38:49. > :38:52.frustrating weekend. You heard the story that his car in the up in the

:38:52. > :38:56.wall after being driven by the reserve driver and frustrating for

:38:56. > :38:59.Pastor Maldonado, you have been down to Williams and what do you

:38:59. > :39:04.know about why the car stopped on the track? I grabbed the driver

:39:04. > :39:13.myself. The lead through the different scenarios, was it feel?

:39:13. > :39:19.He said know. Not the gearbox. It was more likely to be a electronics.

:39:19. > :39:24.There was no tell-tale mark, no spin. We will leave it at that.

:39:24. > :39:29.will wait and find out but let's talk about the first part.

:39:29. > :39:32.Alguersuari. The Cocom these boys are, his shirt is off and his

:39:32. > :39:38.trainers and his shorts are on but that is the Red Bull look. What is

:39:38. > :39:42.it like competing at home? You have got to Spanish phrases? We have had

:39:42. > :39:48.a lot of problems this season so we are trying to solve them. Yesterday

:39:48. > :39:52.I could not run in the afternoons and the mechanics were very tough.

:39:52. > :39:59.It is my second home town because they live in Barcelona so Barcelona

:39:59. > :40:01.would be my home town. It is nice to be here because it is still

:40:01. > :40:11.Spain and because of the weather and the environment and the people,

:40:11. > :40:15.

:40:15. > :40:20.it is quite cool. What I want to know, sorry, Jake... People still

:40:20. > :40:24.don't really realise how young you are. And the experience, you came

:40:24. > :40:29.in as the youngest driver and you still are incredibly young. Were do

:40:29. > :40:33.you see the next part of your future in this business? At the

:40:33. > :40:38.moment, as you say, and very young and what I want to focus on is just

:40:38. > :40:43.enjoying myself and driving fast and doing my best and just to learn.

:40:43. > :40:47.It is nice experience that Red Bull got me into Formula One at 19 years

:40:47. > :40:51.old. It is just experience and I am still learning a lot about the

:40:51. > :40:59.tyres and the set-up. We're still not at 100% with the car but it's

:40:59. > :41:06.just a matter of timing. We are having fun. This year we had

:41:06. > :41:11.problems. You just try to enjoy the present. Trying to improve the

:41:11. > :41:16.present and trying race after race to improve the set-up of your car

:41:16. > :41:20.and everything. We know you would have wanted more this weekend in

:41:20. > :41:26.starting in front of the home crowd. What was it like to have your best

:41:26. > :41:29.Formula One finish and pick up her first points? It was good. I

:41:29. > :41:36.started Formula One with the zero in my pocket. It was difficult for

:41:36. > :41:39.me to race, the weekend was testing. This year, we're still trying new

:41:39. > :41:44.things for qualifying and new things just to check if it improves

:41:44. > :41:49.and if it's better. It's difficult because Formula One isn't easy,

:41:50. > :41:53.especially for a small team. At the moment, I think we are doing a good

:41:53. > :41:57.job because we have been learning a lot and so far I think we have been

:41:57. > :42:02.improving ourselves during the race, in Monaco, it was a good race for

:42:02. > :42:08.us. We scored our first points. And we just need to keep focusing on

:42:08. > :42:11.this and we need to relax and stay calm and the results welcome.

:42:11. > :42:18.distracting is it for you as a driver to hear stories of you being

:42:18. > :42:23.replaced? It doesn't because Red Bull has done enough for me, since

:42:23. > :42:31.I was 15 years old and go-karting in Italy, and they brought me into

:42:31. > :42:37.Formula One. As I said, I don't think about my future because they

:42:37. > :42:41.know about my future. At the moment, I just see myself here, with this

:42:41. > :42:44.team and I just see myself with this family because they brought me

:42:44. > :42:48.into Formula One and I have developed with them and I think I

:42:48. > :42:55.can bring much more to the team this year and next year for sure.

:42:55. > :43:01.It is a matter of time. Good to catch up with the Spanish side. The

:43:01. > :43:09.immediate future, pick the pole position? Sebastian Vettel. Or Mark

:43:09. > :43:13.Webber?! Great to chat with you. It might be another Spaniard we're

:43:13. > :43:18.looking at, Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa has been under pressure. Lots

:43:18. > :43:22.of runs, softer tyres? It was on a surprising as to why he did that

:43:22. > :43:27.and I think it was a mistake because it showed weakness but I

:43:27. > :43:31.still think that team is being led by Fernando Alonso. The prancing

:43:31. > :43:37.horse might be the dark horse. You heard it from behind me, they think

:43:37. > :43:45.Sebastian Vettel on pole position. You might be right, 21 years and

:43:45. > :43:52.five days old. Alguersuari. The youngest man on the grid. The top-

:43:52. > :44:00.ten shoot-out, Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, one Renault

:44:00. > :44:06.car and one force India. Piloted by Adrian Sutil. He just squeezed

:44:06. > :44:16.through after the chequered flag had dropped. That is the 10 runners

:44:16. > :44:22.

:44:22. > :44:25.for this final qualifier. 10 minutes to go until the line-up for

:44:25. > :44:33.the top 10 4th Grand Prix in Valencia and already we have some

:44:33. > :44:37.action. Ferrari going onto the track. Fernando Alonso, he has

:44:37. > :44:41.threatened to be the front row contender all the way through

:44:41. > :44:51.practice and qualifying. And Ferrari have looked as if they have

:44:51. > :44:52.

:44:52. > :44:57.new set of soft tyres. They were running very low. Felipe Massa only

:44:57. > :45:02.had one more set of new soft tyres left. Two Mclarens on two new sets

:45:02. > :45:07.of soft tyres. Vettel, Lens lns and Webber have another set of --

:45:07. > :45:13.Alonso and Webber have another set of softs left. Previously we would

:45:13. > :45:17.have seen teams put on their qualifying only engine maps. Vettel

:45:17. > :45:22.also on new soft tyres. Now we will learn how much they're affected by

:45:22. > :45:26.not having the maps available to them any more. We've often seen

:45:26. > :45:30.that Red Bull have been massively fast in qualifying and been under

:45:30. > :45:37.pressure during the race. It's not conceivable that Mclaren could have

:45:37. > :45:41.won the last three Grand Prixs. Are you expecting Mclaren to be closer

:45:41. > :45:47.to Red Bull, David? That remains to be seen. You caught me off guard

:45:47. > :45:51.there. I was looking at some notes. Yeah, this track is a bit of

:45:51. > :45:56.compromise. It doesn't play to aerodynamic strength. It's more

:45:56. > :46:01.about top end speed and braking. Ferrari certainly were in good

:46:01. > :46:06.shape in Canada. They were within .2 of pole position there. They

:46:06. > :46:11.have to feel they are in this fight. It would mean a huge amount to them

:46:11. > :46:15.for the locals. Someone's got to stop this amazing run of I think

:46:15. > :46:19.seven pole positions for Sebastien Vettel this year. This may be the

:46:19. > :46:22.man, Fernando Alonso. He rattles through turn one. Not much of a

:46:22. > :46:28.corner. Then hard on the brakes into what is the first big decision

:46:28. > :46:33.of the lap, down to second gear, short shift through the exit of

:46:33. > :46:36.turn three. Then this awkward chicane, rattling over the kerbs at

:46:36. > :46:41.four and five. Then through the kink on the run down to the bridge.

:46:41. > :46:46.A lot of people having difficulty with the rear locking into this

:46:46. > :46:50.corner here. No problem for Fernando. He then powers out across

:46:50. > :46:54.the Swing Bridge. Does it feel narrow when you get to the bridge?

:46:54. > :46:58.They're so focused on a point in the distance, I think driving a

:46:58. > :47:02.race car is a bit like joining the dots. You're not watching or trying

:47:02. > :47:06.to watch the scenery pass by. At this moment, Fernando Alonso will

:47:06. > :47:12.look ahead to where his desired braking point should be. Then as

:47:12. > :47:15.soon as he's hit the brakes, he will look at the apex of the corner.

:47:15. > :47:19.Maybe Spanish turf but Fernando Alonso has never qualified in the

:47:19. > :47:24.top three here. There are three drivers on the grid who have won

:47:24. > :47:30.this Grand Prix - Sebastien Vettel, Felipe Massa and Rubens Barrichello

:47:30. > :47:34.who is already out. He starts the Grand Prix 13th. That looked fairly

:47:34. > :47:40.pedestrian from Alonso there. He wasn't really attacking the apex

:47:40. > :47:43.too much. Let's see what it translates in terms of lap time. A

:47:43. > :47:48.quick brake adjustment with his left hand. I love that shot against

:47:48. > :47:53.the wall. I could watch that all day long. Alonso then again

:47:53. > :47:57.struggling put the power down in the last corner. He does a 37.4.

:47:57. > :48:03.That will not be quick enough for pole, I'm pretty sure of that. The

:48:03. > :48:09.crowd seemed to like. It I don't think Fernando will be that pleased

:48:09. > :48:15.with 37.4. Massa follows up with 1.37.8. We see now what Mclaren and

:48:15. > :48:19.Red Bull have got to say about that. Hamilton into the final corner.

:48:19. > :48:24.Sector times are good. Vettel is out there and flying. He's half a

:48:24. > :48:29.second up on his team-mate. Hamilton goes faster on 37.3.

:48:29. > :48:34.Webber can only do a 37.5 for third. Mclaren from Ferrari from Red Bull.

:48:34. > :48:40.It's Sebastien Vettel, this man out there, he's lighting up the race

:48:40. > :48:45.track again. Two corners to go, one now. He spots the braking, well he

:48:45. > :48:53.struggled from the apex slightly. Vettel then crosses the line now.

:48:53. > :48:58.He goes into the 36, 1.36.9 for provisional pole position. They

:48:58. > :49:03.will have to go again. Vettel then absolutely flying, four tenths

:49:03. > :49:08.quicker than Lewis Hamilton. There's a man who used to drive for

:49:08. > :49:14.Mclaren and Ferrari and owned the Toro Rosso team. But the story is

:49:14. > :49:18.back on track now. Nico Rosberg, at the moment we have seven cars out

:49:18. > :49:24.on track. Six of those are recovering to the pits for a second

:49:24. > :49:29.go. We've yet to see Michael Schumacher, Nick Heidfeld or Adrian

:49:29. > :49:33.Sutil, still trying to save their tyres. Nico Rosberg out on track.

:49:33. > :49:39.Another brake shift change with his left hand. So much to do in the

:49:39. > :49:44.cockpit. The work load is immense with the rear wing, KERS,

:49:44. > :49:48.differential, engine maps, brake bias, so much going on. Plenty of

:49:48. > :49:52.KERS left. He hits that button now, as he heads down what is

:49:52. > :49:57.effectively the first of the very long straights. Engine revs,

:49:57. > :50:05.creeping up there, with the wing open. Just touching 18,000. Seventh

:50:05. > :50:12.gear, good for Cornwallifying. He's kissing the soft limiter --

:50:12. > :50:18.qualifying. He's kissing the soft limiter there. His first sector

:50:18. > :50:21.time is a full six tenths off the ultimate pace. A lot of work to do.

:50:21. > :50:25.He's used up all of his KERS already in the lap. Lots of

:50:25. > :50:32.understeer through that corner. He's now three quarters of a second

:50:32. > :50:35.adrift. Now sweeping in this very high-

:50:35. > :50:42.speed section. Steering wheel change going on there. How do they

:50:42. > :50:49.do so much in the cockpit at 190mph? Great traction from the

:50:49. > :50:51.Mercedes there. Rosberg, at the moment, stays 7th with a 38.2. You

:50:52. > :50:55.said Michael Schumacher was thinking fourth row of the grid.

:50:55. > :50:59.Looks like he was right. Interestingly, Nico Rosberg in the

:50:59. > :51:03.morning session, would have had a bit more fuel but he did 38.5. He

:51:03. > :51:09.has found a little bit of pace, which isn't the case when we look

:51:09. > :51:13.at Fernando Alonso. Actually he did. He went a tenth quicker. The warmer

:51:13. > :51:16.track conditions have stabilised some of the lap times. An amazing

:51:16. > :51:21.lap from Sebastien Vettel, once again, throwing down the marker and

:51:21. > :51:26.saying, right guys, you have four tenths to beat me pour pole.

:51:26. > :51:31.Mercedes have been quickest in the free practices and qualifying. Are

:51:31. > :51:35.they not carrying enough downforce? I think they have a very effective

:51:35. > :51:39.DRS system. Earlier in the year, we heard one of the downsides of such

:51:39. > :51:43.an effective system is they have problemles keeping the flow

:51:43. > :51:47.attached under normal conditions. You need that fully explained what

:51:47. > :51:51.the effect of that is. There's no point being quick in a straight

:51:51. > :51:55.line if you're not quick enough through the corners, except it

:51:55. > :52:01.might make it easier to defend during the race. If they are going

:52:02. > :52:07.to be firmly at the back of the top ten, then they shouldn't be under

:52:07. > :52:11.any pressure from the guys just outside it. Ted has a quick word

:52:11. > :52:14.before we get down to the final laps. They're all going out again,

:52:14. > :52:18.including Sebastien Vettel, which you might find surprising, afrrt

:52:18. > :52:23.from the fact that the track is getting faster and faster. Not even

:52:23. > :52:27.Vettel thinks he's safe in pole. Michael Schumacher saved himself a

:52:27. > :52:31.set of fresh tyres tomorrow by doing only one run. That paid

:52:31. > :52:35.dividends for him in Canada. That's what Schumacher's doing. He's yet

:52:35. > :52:42.to post a time in this session, a competitive time. Nor has Heidfeld

:52:42. > :52:46.and Sutil. But the front runners, they can't afford that. Sebastien

:52:47. > :52:50.Vettel knows just how fast Lewis Hamilton is. He knows how fast the

:52:50. > :52:54.Ferraris have been. Jenson Button in fifth at the moment has also

:52:55. > :52:58.shown handy pace around here. So this is a proper shootout. And Red

:52:58. > :53:03.Bull do not feel comfortable enough to just leave Vettel in the pits

:53:03. > :53:06.and save a set of tyres. Mark Webber has some work to do in the

:53:07. > :53:12.second Red Bull. He's only fourth at the moment. About six tenths of

:53:12. > :53:19.a second to find, which you'd think is pretty easy in 3.3 miles, but

:53:19. > :53:22.it's not. You've got to question whether he's got all the tools at

:53:22. > :53:27.his disposal. He has been unfortunate with KERS not working

:53:27. > :53:31.in previous Grand Prixs. He knows the track. He likes it. He

:53:31. > :53:34.obviously took us on a high flying session during the Grand Prix.

:53:34. > :53:41.Let's see what he can deliver during this lap. He's into that lap

:53:41. > :53:45.then. So 32 seconds remaining. Clearly they've got to get offer

:53:45. > :53:51.the line before the flag comes out. Who's out there doing that?

:53:51. > :53:55.Hamilton, Button and Vettel will be the last man over the line to start

:53:55. > :54:00.a hot lap. He'll pass the finish line with about 12, 13 seconds

:54:00. > :54:05.remaining. Webber's done a personal best first sector about a tenth of

:54:05. > :54:10.a second shy. Alonso is a tenth faster. Matching Vettel's first

:54:10. > :54:14.sector pace, just about, within a few hundredths of a second. So much

:54:14. > :54:21.of the track remaining. Mark Webber then really needs to get the Red

:54:21. > :54:27.Bull up onto the front row of the grid. The flag is out. Zero seconds

:54:27. > :54:30.remaining. These laps can be completed. Seven cars on the track

:54:30. > :54:36.at the moment. Rosberg has pitted. Michael Schumacher with a

:54:36. > :54:44.reasonable first sector as well. So has Felipe Massa. Button a 25.8

:54:44. > :54:50.first sector, not particularly good, even though it's a personal best.

:54:50. > :54:54.Charging through the apex, absolutely committed to this

:54:54. > :54:57.qualifying lap, Mark Webber two, corners to go. Can he get this Red

:54:58. > :55:02.Bull onto the front row and challenge Hamilton and Alonso. On

:55:02. > :55:07.the power early through the exit. He crosses the line, Mark Webber,

:55:07. > :55:11.and second it is on a 37.1, two tenths shy. Alonso is in the pit

:55:11. > :55:16.lane. Alonso's gone in the pit. He's had a problem in the middle of

:55:16. > :55:20.the lap. Now we're looking out for Vettel, who's been blinding in the

:55:20. > :55:25.middle part of the lap too. Can he improve on that. He knows he still

:55:25. > :55:28.has to fend off Hamilton. He's quite a bit quicker. And Hamilton

:55:28. > :55:36.pits. Vettel has said that's enough. He's been called by the team and

:55:36. > :55:40.he's coming in. Massa has just done a 37.5 for P5. Button only 37.6 for

:55:40. > :55:44.sixth. He'll be disappointed for that. All Red Bull front row and

:55:44. > :55:51.the drivers knew that they'd either made mistakes or they didn't need

:55:51. > :55:59.to complete the lap, save the tyres. Sebastien Vettel then is on pole

:55:59. > :56:06.position yet again. Pole position number 22. He's 24 years of age

:56:06. > :56:10.shortly. But Vettel, then, yet again, has what it takes to beat a

:56:10. > :56:15.quality field of drivers, including his team-mate Mark Webber. In the

:56:15. > :56:18.end, Hamilton was four tenths shy of pole, starting third alongside

:56:18. > :56:25.Fernando Alonso, who had a poor middle sector, presumably either

:56:25. > :56:31.traffic or an error. Alongside Alonso, his team-mate Massa. Jenson

:56:31. > :56:36.Button, I think, will be thoroughly disappointed with sixth. Nico

:56:36. > :56:42.Rosberg seventh ahead of Michael Schumacher. That means it's 8-0 for

:56:42. > :56:46.Alonso versus mass ma in qual -- Massa in qualifying. For Rosberg

:56:46. > :56:50.it's 7-1 against Schumacher. We're getting to that point in the year

:56:50. > :56:55.where you can do a meaningful comparison and the statistics are

:56:55. > :57:01.very stark. But once again, Vettel is the man with the speed.

:57:01. > :57:06.That's right. The image that all his rivals hate to see, that finger

:57:06. > :57:09.denoting he's number one again. An incredible run of pole positions.

:57:09. > :57:13.Looks as if he's got a comfortable margin over the rest of the field.

:57:13. > :57:16.He's having a peak within the cockpit of the other cars. They

:57:16. > :57:18.don't get this opportunity any other cars. Nothing in the

:57:18. > :57:22.regulations to say you can't stick your head in there. He'll not be

:57:22. > :57:26.allowed to touch that car. What's he checking out? Checking out the

:57:26. > :57:29.comfort of his seat, do you think? I think he's looking at the back of

:57:29. > :57:32.the steering wheel to see how many paddles are there and what they

:57:32. > :57:36.might do with those. That's a specific request from somebody

:57:36. > :57:40.within the team of trying to find out what they're doing. Nick

:57:40. > :57:46.Heidfeld and Adrian Sutil chose not to use any tyres this that session.

:57:46. > :57:56.They will line up ninth and tenth. Heidfeld presumably because he did

:57:56. > :57:56.

:57:56. > :58:44.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:58:44. > :58:47.choice. But they set the best times Fernando Alonso, would have loved

:58:47. > :58:50.to pick up pole position here. Sadly, just not quick enough. It's

:58:50. > :58:55.all about Red Bull in Formula One at the moment. We need, Eddie,

:58:55. > :58:58.someone to do something. In many ways Red Bull are ruining the final

:58:58. > :59:02.part of the qualifying sessions. Everyone just pulled into the pits

:59:02. > :59:05.and it was game over. It's game over for a couple of reasons. It's

:59:05. > :59:09.the best balanced car. We've all seen the regulations that's

:59:09. > :59:13.probably come against them in some respects. They're trying to fathom

:59:13. > :59:17.out why they're on pole. If you look at the amount of lead they've

:59:17. > :59:21.got, it clearly hasn't been the mapping of the engine. They'll have

:59:21. > :59:25.to think again as to how to make them all bunch up together. It's

:59:25. > :59:28.worth reminding you, they've banned the teams changing engine maps

:59:28. > :59:32.thinking it might make things closer. Well, it didn't. It didn't

:59:32. > :59:35.do much for Paul di Resta. He starts 12th after a difficult

:59:35. > :59:39.weekend. Let's hear from him now with Lee.

:59:40. > :59:44.It had been a difficult weekend any way. You did the best you could

:59:44. > :59:50.with the limited laps you managed. It was difficult. After Friday you

:59:50. > :59:53.were always going to be on the back foot. There was an unfortunate

:59:53. > :59:57.situation in my car, which was a lot of damage and took the guys a

:59:57. > :00:01.long time to repair yesterday. We went into this morning, having

:00:02. > :00:05.changed something after three laps. It didn't quite work. We had to

:00:05. > :00:09.revert back. We were where we were. The last lap was up a bit, but I

:00:09. > :00:12.seemed to make a bit of a mistake at turn 17. I triggered something

:00:12. > :00:16.in the car and lost the down shift and lost the advantage I'd gain in

:00:16. > :00:19.the rest of the lap. I suppose it is what it is. Have you to stay

:00:19. > :00:27.positive from it and we're in a position wri think we can fight for

:00:27. > :00:32.points. The only thing is we've not done a Long Run. We're going into

:00:32. > :00:35.the race with an open mind. heard on the team radio saying well

:00:36. > :00:40.done. You were using every inch of the track and sometimes a bit more.

:00:40. > :00:44.Whalz your biggest unknown going into tomorrow? The biggest unknown

:00:44. > :00:48.is how the car will perform an high fuel. At what point do you conserve

:00:48. > :00:53.the tyres a bit? The biggest concern is what aerobalance you're

:00:54. > :00:58.going start with, not having driven it. There's many things that leaps

:00:58. > :01:01.to, even brake attempts. You can be on the edge, and it can be over

:01:01. > :01:11.even from car to car. People have been in this situation, I'm sure,

:01:11. > :01:13.

:01:13. > :01:17.before we have. We'll make the best over the years, would you have

:01:17. > :01:21.Ricky sticking with the plan you made six months ago and give the

:01:21. > :01:26.reserve driver the chance and risks something like this happening, or

:01:26. > :01:31.do what you can do to help someone like Paul di Resta because this is

:01:31. > :01:35.the state his car returned to the garage in? It was not his choice.

:01:35. > :01:39.You have to see the mindset of the team, we have to applaud them for

:01:39. > :01:42.giving him the chance and he has grabbed that with open arms, he has

:01:42. > :01:48.done a super job even though the last couple of races have been

:01:48. > :01:53.difficult but in that team they have a third driver, Hulkenberg,

:01:53. > :01:58.who is outstanding and those three drivers are potential winners. Full

:01:58. > :02:03.marks to Force India. It is easy to criticise. That is what they

:02:03. > :02:07.happened, they made a mistake and they paid the penalty. It's not

:02:07. > :02:11.that bad, he starts in 12, I have a suspicion he will get points.

:02:11. > :02:17.di Resta is the race driver and you have to help him. These boys need

:02:17. > :02:22.no help. Lewis Hamilton will be pleased to be standing next to

:02:22. > :02:26.Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. Lewis Hamilton, very close to both

:02:26. > :02:35.of them in those very strangely designed suits that the McLaren

:02:35. > :02:39.drivers have for the qualifying. Let's here from them. What is

:02:39. > :02:44.Sebastian Vettel looking for? was showing us the spare

:02:45. > :02:49.advertising space on his overalls! Have you asked him to look for

:02:49. > :02:55.something in those cars? drivers are inquisitive. They will

:02:55. > :03:00.have a look at the Corus and it's a one time they are in the open. He

:03:00. > :03:03.is always wanting to know what the opposition are up to. I and all is

:03:03. > :03:07.performing, another pole position, what was thinking of sending him

:03:07. > :03:11.out again at the end? We wanted to be the last car on the circuit and

:03:11. > :03:15.be able to react to others if they were going quicker. We could see

:03:15. > :03:21.that nobody was going to be able to beat his time so we just saved the

:03:21. > :03:26.lap. Even if you have not got any fresh tyres left? Yes, but that is

:03:26. > :03:33.no disadvantage, three-quarters of a time lap. We are in good shape.

:03:33. > :03:38.Well done. Well done, indeed. For the first time since 2006, one

:03:38. > :03:45.driver picking up seven pole position is. Interesting comment on

:03:45. > :03:49.the tyres, saving tyres is the thing to do. We saw that from

:03:49. > :03:54.Schumacher and Toro Rosso. But he says that despite the fact they

:03:54. > :03:59.have used those tyres, there are still OK? They have put one he'd

:03:59. > :04:02.cycle through the tyres by going out so there in the warm words so

:04:02. > :04:07.they build up heat and they get used to... It does two things, it

:04:07. > :04:10.makes the compound just that little bit harder, which could be an

:04:10. > :04:13.advantage on the straight circuit so you are able to go one or two

:04:13. > :04:21.laps longer but might not have the ultimate speed. I don't see any

:04:21. > :04:27.advantage. Jensen Button did not quite have the speed today. Three-

:04:27. > :04:36.tenths of a second behind Lewis Hamilton. Starting in 6th place,

:04:36. > :04:42.how do you feel? It's all very good. The car felt pretty good in Q 2. I

:04:42. > :04:50.just could not get any real grip. A special attraction in the first two,

:04:50. > :04:55.last week it was OK. It was so frustrating. Yes. Frustrating. Q2,

:04:55. > :05:00.the car felt very good and I did not have to push it hard. And then

:05:00. > :05:06.Q 3, I don't know why... Be were talking about oversteer, do you

:05:06. > :05:11.know were it is coming from? It's coming from the back. So much has

:05:11. > :05:17.happened since yesterday. The car was great this morning. But with

:05:17. > :05:22.the heat, maybe the balance isn't working. As good as it was this

:05:22. > :05:27.morning, because of that. It was the same thing on the front tyre

:05:28. > :05:34.also. They say tomorrow will be even hotter. How does this puzzle

:05:34. > :05:40.on raffle? I am sure we can change the balance. Tyre pressure and what

:05:40. > :05:46.have you. The Eire Og balance and differential, but I did not expect

:05:46. > :05:50.that in 23. Not great. We will have a good race. It looks like there is

:05:50. > :05:54.only one happy driver in Formula One. Jensen Button is right to be

:05:54. > :06:00.down, he has to do something to sort this out, to sort out

:06:00. > :06:04.qualifying? We know how he can race, we saw so much evidence of that in

:06:04. > :06:10.Canada, sorts the qualifying out because he will not win races

:06:10. > :06:18.starting in 6th position. Perhaps a man to look at his Sebastian Vettel,

:06:18. > :06:20.he has got qualifying nailed. He is that the drivers press conference.

:06:20. > :06:25.He said all along the new regulations on the engine mapping

:06:25. > :06:31.would not affect Red Bull and I assume you are correct? I did not

:06:31. > :06:34.say that, there was talk beforehand going into this and there will be a

:06:34. > :06:39.lot of talk before the next grand prix but everyone will lose out on

:06:40. > :06:45.something. If people expect us to lose more than others, that is what

:06:45. > :06:49.I disagree. All in all, I think it was a very good day for us, very

:06:49. > :06:55.good to have the front row for the team and it will be a very long

:06:55. > :06:59.race, it's always tough year. It's a tricky circuit, 25 corners before

:06:59. > :07:03.we even cross the line again and especially in qualifying and to get

:07:03. > :07:09.the corners right is very difficult so to get the perfect lap is quite

:07:09. > :07:15.tough. But I think I first round was quite good, I was very happy.

:07:16. > :07:20.It is a good result. And could to start from that tomorrow. Mark

:07:20. > :07:23.Webber, you were alongside Sebastien on the front row. You're

:07:23. > :07:30.one of the only leader contenders to improve on your final run, was

:07:30. > :07:33.it the perfect lap? It was pretty good. You have got so many corners,

:07:33. > :07:37.you would like to put all of them together perfectly for all of you

:07:37. > :07:45.runs but it's not the case, we have to do our best to put together when

:07:45. > :07:50.it counts. I did not have the Smithers build up into Q 3. I knew

:07:50. > :07:55.there was some more to come. I had to put it altogether. Still not

:07:55. > :07:59.easy, but it was a pretty good lap, nice to go quicker on the last

:07:59. > :08:03.sector to put that on together. But in the end, it was a great day for

:08:03. > :08:08.the team. And off the back of all that talk and it's nice to come

:08:08. > :08:13.here and do well. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's race. And we

:08:13. > :08:19.will go from there. Lewis Hamilton, you were trying to improve at the

:08:19. > :08:29.end of Q3 but third on the grid, is that a good effort? Definitely. I

:08:29. > :08:33.was not expecting to be so high up after P3, we were struggling. The

:08:33. > :08:39.guys did a good job. And we can analyse some of the data to improve.

:08:39. > :08:44.Fantastic job by the guys. I think the lap was not too bad, I tried to

:08:44. > :08:50.improve on the last lap but you're always trying to get more. I just

:08:50. > :08:54.bailed out. Hopefully I will save those tyres for the race. Lewis

:08:54. > :08:58.Hamilton looking towards the race from third on the grid, just behind

:08:58. > :09:03.Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. Then Fernando Alonso and Felipe

:09:03. > :09:11.Massa with Ferrari, expecting to challenge alongside each other. And

:09:11. > :09:15.five German drivers in the top 10. Including three astern. Fernando

:09:15. > :09:20.Alonso starts and forth, he says he has made the best seven starts of

:09:20. > :09:25.his career so far this season and he will need one from 4th place?

:09:25. > :09:29.believes in himself, he is also sure about the car. He needs to get

:09:29. > :09:35.it all together as a package and then he can challenge. Plenty of

:09:35. > :09:45.sport coming your way. As ice-pick, the MotoGP is happening live on the

:09:45. > :09:47.

:09:47. > :09:50.Red Button. Then we have that re- run over on BBC Two and then

:09:50. > :09:55.Wimbledon, we were watching Andy Murray from here in Spain.

:09:55. > :10:00.Congratulations. And more action coming next on BBC One. And then,

:10:00. > :10:05.of course, we are back. The European Grand Prix, all the build

:10:05. > :10:10.up on BBC One coming your way from 12:10pm, including a chat with a

:10:10. > :10:16.man who had quite a good race the last time out. I like those

:10:16. > :10:21.conditions, you have to really feel your way around. Before I started

:10:21. > :10:24.racing, and was karting, and my father would put it in wet tyres

:10:25. > :10:30.and I had to run around on slicks because he wanted me to learn how

:10:30. > :10:40.to drive in the light. Maybe he just could not afford to get a wet

:10:40. > :10:46.tyres. Now he claims... It is all credit to him, he is my father

:10:46. > :10:50.figure! Jensen Button sounding as tight as Eddie Jordan! Sebastian

:10:50. > :10:54.Vettel picks up pole position in the heart of Europe's greatest city,
