:00:27. > :01:31.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds
:01:31. > :01:36.Sunday afternoon. Welcome to the 2011 European Grand Prix live from
:01:36. > :01:39.Valencia. Race number eight in a Trulli special season and it's time
:01:39. > :01:49.for this Spanish city to bask in the glory of Formula One and live
:01:49. > :01:50.
:01:50. > :01:53.up to the drama in Canada two weeks ago. No pressure, then? Here in
:01:53. > :01:58.Montreal, this wet track should make this one of the best races of
:01:58. > :02:08.the year. The safety car is in this lap, thank goodness, we will have a
:02:08. > :02:25.
:02:25. > :02:32.This is difficult times for McLaren. Look how hard it is raining. It is
:02:32. > :02:39.the red flag situation. The race is suspended. That looks like the Red
:02:39. > :02:43.shouldered viper to me? And the fans are jumping up, it is a racing
:02:43. > :02:50.car, we haven't seen one of those for a while. Fernando Alonso has
:02:50. > :02:55.been beached. It just keeps falling into place for Red Bull. Jensen
:02:55. > :03:02.Button is in last place, now. Brilliant driving. Schumacher
:03:02. > :03:12.driving the best race since his comeback. The cars are all over the
:03:12. > :03:12.
:03:12. > :03:17.place. Jensen Button, streaming back. This will be Titanic. Jensen
:03:17. > :03:23.Button sales past Mark Webber. Schumacher, Jensen Button goes the
:03:23. > :03:30.wrong way round. Button up into second place! This race isn't over.
:03:30. > :03:35.What can he do? He can smell victory. Is there enough time left?
:03:35. > :03:45.Will be run out of time before Lapps? That is a beautiful drive.
:03:45. > :03:45.
:03:45. > :03:54.Six times through the pit, Jensen Button. Into the final lap, bottom!
:03:54. > :03:59.Driving for his life. Has he got what it takes to hold him off?
:03:59. > :04:09.Jensen Button leads the Grand Prix! Jensen Button, he wins a brilliant
:04:09. > :04:11.
:04:11. > :04:18.race. What a victory! Absolutely brilliant. Sebastian Vettel,
:04:18. > :04:25.finally cracking. Surely the greatest Formula One victory of his
:04:26. > :04:30.career? It really was quite something. It probably was the win
:04:30. > :04:36.of his life. One of the races of our lifetime and what did the team
:04:36. > :04:42.do? Did they sit back and relax? Not in the sport. Not when you
:04:42. > :04:46.train with Red Bull. This is a brand new front wing, a matter how
:04:46. > :04:50.quick it was in Canada, they want to go quicker. There was no time in
:04:50. > :04:54.the sport for reflecting. Once you have retired you can look back and
:04:54. > :05:01.that is why David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan are with me. Apart
:05:01. > :05:08.from the drive, what is your standard memory? I am returning
:05:08. > :05:10.home. Everybody was euphoric. Everybody was captivated by what
:05:10. > :05:15.Jensen Button did and the excitement of the race and Canada,
:05:15. > :05:20.for everybody I come across, that was the stand out. If it was a
:05:20. > :05:23.great story for Formula One, we had an amazing drive from Jenson Button
:05:23. > :05:27.but what I take his McLaren, they were so close to having one of
:05:27. > :05:32.those nightmare situations were you were explaining how drivers crashed
:05:32. > :05:37.into each other. Like Red Bull in Turkey last year. But with that
:05:37. > :05:40.drive from Jensen Button, that was suddenly not the story. All the
:05:40. > :05:44.guys, the mechanics and engineers, or watching with big smiles on
:05:44. > :05:50.their faces but that is the margin between success and failure. In
:05:50. > :05:57.terms of the psychology of the driver, was it worth more than just
:05:57. > :06:02.25 points to Jensen Button? That was an incredible drive. What would
:06:02. > :06:06.have appeared to Sebastian Vettel as a straight forward drive to the
:06:06. > :06:10.line turned out to be under pressure and he put his way out. It
:06:10. > :06:14.was a stunning victory and lots of overtaking. And those conditions
:06:14. > :06:20.are made for Jensen Button. races that have brought us here and
:06:20. > :06:24.those still to come... Hold on, Jensen Button is behind Sebastian
:06:24. > :06:30.Vettel but there are still 300 points to fight for. He is still in
:06:30. > :06:33.this? He is still in this but he has to be very careful about how he
:06:33. > :06:37.accumulates points and in my opinion he has to get his
:06:37. > :06:40.qualifying and needs to be further up the grid to challenge. You can
:06:40. > :06:43.see what happened in qualifying shortly and the other big story was
:06:43. > :06:48.Sebastian Vettel made a slip and that does not happen very often.
:06:48. > :06:51.It's very hot and we are gearing up. The drivers arriving. They have
:06:51. > :07:01.been on the beach, there are wonderful bars and there are other
:07:01. > :07:22.
:07:22. > :07:26.things they could be doing but as give everybody a chance to see this
:07:26. > :07:29.beautiful circuit. The track temperature was getting towards 50
:07:29. > :07:33.degrees in the evening which is why both of these boys will be finding
:07:33. > :07:36.when I bring them out into the sunshine. Let's talk about this
:07:36. > :07:42.place, it is very hot but there are plenty of good reasons to be here?
:07:42. > :07:45.It's a wonderful city? A lot of money has been spent developing
:07:45. > :07:49.this and this whole area was developed for the America's Cup.
:07:49. > :07:53.Once they have that facility they thought, what can we do? And they
:07:53. > :07:58.created this track. It goes around the port, very clearly displayed.
:07:58. > :08:02.And we are looking at one of the streets. It's not actually straight.
:08:02. > :08:05.That will make it very interesting with the use of DRS. The cars will
:08:05. > :08:11.be moving from one side of the track and taking the racing line.
:08:11. > :08:15.It does make a very slippery? does. It is only used once a year
:08:15. > :08:19.and a lot of trucks are up here building up the track before the
:08:19. > :08:24.grand prix and we have had a number of incidents, this was Kobayashi.
:08:24. > :08:29.Turn 25. And then Michael Schumacher, losing the back end.
:08:29. > :08:36.That isn't his normal mind. That is an exercise in reverse parking.
:08:36. > :08:41.There are some great things, the port, the fish markets, these are
:08:41. > :08:46.old fish markets. Some nice things but one overtake in the race in
:08:46. > :08:50.2009, 82 in Turkey. This is a real test for the new regulations?
:08:50. > :08:56.the new regulations working? If you were looking for a prime place to
:08:56. > :09:00.see that, it is here. This is similar to Monaco, street circuit,
:09:00. > :09:04.in the centre of the city, it has huge affection to a lot of people,
:09:04. > :09:11.me included, I have been won over but we actually have to be certain
:09:11. > :09:17.that we can get a proper race. Maybe today is the day. The sun is
:09:17. > :09:21.beating down, the heat is on the rest of the pack. You can see, 60
:09:21. > :09:23.points between Sebastian Vettel and Jensen Button and few people
:09:23. > :09:30.mentioned after Canada that Sebastian Vettel increased his lead
:09:30. > :09:36.because Lewis Hamilton was in second. And the constructors... 255
:09:36. > :09:40.points for Red Bull. There are some new rules this weekend, there is a
:09:40. > :09:46.slight change to the engine mapping system during qualifying which many
:09:46. > :09:55.people believe was designed to slow down Red Bull. However, once again,
:09:55. > :09:57.one man slightly forgot to read the script. Anyone who came to Valencia
:09:58. > :10:02.hoping for a surprise result in qualifying would have left the
:10:02. > :10:06.track disappointed. Sebastian Vettel was quickest again, he
:10:06. > :10:11.starts on pole position for the 7th time. Down the field, Jarno Trulli
:10:11. > :10:18.underlined how tricky this track is with this lazy spend. Conveniently,
:10:18. > :10:22.the pits were nearby. Alguersuari's techniques did not work. The driver
:10:22. > :10:29.was an early drop out. Today we just went for one goal on the first
:10:29. > :10:34.lap and I got traffic, I could not do it. The tyre was gone. Faced
:10:34. > :10:39.with a filling fuel pump, Maldonado could not find the hard shoulder
:10:39. > :10:43.and instead parked his car in the middle of the track. Into the top
:10:43. > :10:47.10, everyone qualifying when they were expected to. Adrian Sutil is
:10:47. > :10:52.10th, Heidfeld 9th and then Mercedes with Nico Rosberg having
:10:52. > :10:57.an advantage - he saved his fresh set of tyres by just doing one run.
:10:57. > :11:02.Michael Schumacher does not predict any fireworks. There is that much
:11:02. > :11:07.chance to move forward in the race. It is going to be mostly staying in
:11:07. > :11:11.position and driving to the end and take the points. Jensen Button was
:11:11. > :11:16.brought back to earth with the pub. Only six on the grid, the rear of
:11:16. > :11:22.his car getting away from him, winning Ferrari started head of
:11:22. > :11:29.McLaren on the grid. It was a great result for Alonso on home soil.
:11:29. > :11:33.know this is our maximum position and Red Bull have been able to
:11:33. > :11:40.reach us over the last 13 races. This is Formula One, no magic
:11:40. > :11:50.tricks. The real goal was to beat McLaren. We have got one in front
:11:50. > :11:53.
:11:53. > :11:58.and one behind. Between now and tomorrow, we can fight. The top
:11:58. > :12:02.three, as they were last year. Lewis Hamilton drove a brilliant
:12:02. > :12:05.lap and outrode the car's -- Mark Webber was in third place under
:12:05. > :12:09.pressure and having already been quickest, Sebastian Vettel cooled
:12:09. > :12:14.off his final attempt and retired to the garage to consider his
:12:14. > :12:18.genius. The 22 year-old has 20 poor positions, 10th in the all-time
:12:18. > :12:22.list and only two behind Nelson Piquet and Niki Lauda. This is a
:12:22. > :12:31.fresh start this weekend and I would love to just finish in that
:12:31. > :12:36.position. I would be more than happy. We will see how it goes.
:12:36. > :12:43.was a good time to peak. My personal best, it was not enough.
:12:43. > :12:46.But it was a good lap. We are pretty close. McLaren and Ferrari,
:12:46. > :12:51.we would have taken that in the middle of qualifying. It is
:12:51. > :12:58.difficult to predict, especially with the races so far. When you
:12:58. > :13:03.start from pole, you do not want to finish second. Sebastian Vettel,
:13:03. > :13:06.the only driver smiling after qualifying. Mark Webber alongside.
:13:06. > :13:10.Lewis Hamilton will look to overtake one Red Bull at the start
:13:10. > :13:20.and Ferrari is ready to pounce. Jensen Button in 6th place followed
:13:20. > :13:21.
:13:21. > :13:28.by a Rosberg, Schumacher, Heidfeld and Adrian Sutil. Kobayashi, 14.
:13:28. > :13:37.Perez, fit to race from 16. And at the back, Team Lotus, Virgin and
:13:38. > :13:41.Hispania. It is a real treat to be her, it's a hive of activity. An
:13:41. > :13:47.ancestor, the world champion, with his headphones on, gearing himself
:13:47. > :13:53.up. Clearly very focused. Can you give us an insight into his
:13:53. > :14:00.favourite band? German folk music! It is small, what you buy deep
:14:00. > :14:09.purple! He is completely infatuated! -- smoke on the water.
:14:09. > :14:12.How many times have we stood here in all of this driver? The later
:14:12. > :14:16.stages, they decided that they thought the advantages the car had
:14:16. > :14:21.was to do with engine mapping and they changed it, they could not
:14:21. > :14:25.change it and so this down. It did not happen, they have got it wrong.
:14:25. > :14:30.He does the business once again, it was a really good lap from Mark
:14:30. > :14:40.Webber. But those Hamilton is happy, starting third? He will be looking
:14:40. > :14:41.
:14:41. > :14:47.to last year's race? He had a great start? He really launched off that
:14:47. > :14:52.been sidelined. And he put that to good effect and gets his nose down
:14:52. > :14:59.the inside. How he managed to get through that corner without
:15:00. > :15:05.touching, I don't know. That massive launch from the grid. This
:15:05. > :15:09.is the key area. Been to turn number two, there was a big window
:15:09. > :15:13.of opportunity. And he can actually launch himself over that inside. It
:15:13. > :15:17.was down to whether the manifold leaves enough space. It'll be
:15:17. > :15:23.interesting to see after all this criticism if he gives us such an
:15:23. > :15:28.exciting start? There will be no change and if there is, I would be
:15:28. > :15:38.one disappointed and toot surprised. He drives with his heart. He does
:15:38. > :15:39.
:15:39. > :15:44.make mistakes, tiny ones and for the rules, but I think all that
:15:44. > :15:48.noise was a message from Red Bull to get out of the garage. Plenty of
:15:48. > :15:52.eyes will be on his car, and plenty focused on Fernando Alonso, who has
:15:52. > :15:56.never done particularly well at the their own Grand Prix. However,
:15:56. > :16:06.everywhere he goes, he still has fanatics following his every move,
:16:06. > :16:18.
:16:18. > :16:22.as you can see right now, and one Well, Fernando, thanks for sparing
:16:22. > :16:27.some time, I know it is a busy weekend for you. Some drivers do
:16:27. > :16:35.not have one home Grand Prix, you have two. Yes, it is being used for
:16:35. > :16:39.May. Obviously, I like to race in Spain, I like to say all the fans
:16:39. > :16:43.sharing his love for Formula One. This sport has been my life for the
:16:43. > :16:48.last 20 years, and racing in Spain two times is good for them, and to
:16:48. > :16:54.watch these cars is something unique, and we need to make the
:16:54. > :16:58.best of this year, because we never know when we will have two Grands
:16:58. > :17:05.Prix in Spain. Maybe it will be for a few more years, you never know.
:17:05. > :17:08.We need to maximise this time. is the Alonso maniac like? Formula
:17:08. > :17:16.One has really been helped and given a boost in this country
:17:16. > :17:21.because of you. 2004 was the first time Spain saw Formula One live on
:17:21. > :17:27.television, and it was my best years, 2005, 2000 a six, so there

:17:31. > :17:36.I go out to the restaurant for the cinema, normal things, they are
:17:36. > :17:39.crazy people around me, but it is very nice to feel all that support,
:17:39. > :17:44.and hopefully I can pay it back with some good results, especially
:17:44. > :17:49.at home. You are meeting some fans now. Is it nice to get up close and
:17:49. > :17:54.speak to them? Yes, their eyes shine when I speak to them, I
:17:54. > :18:00.noticed that, and it is good, not only here. When you arrive at the
:18:00. > :18:10.airport, the hotel, there are fans everywhere. Sometimes also in your

:18:27. > :18:31.He is just putting on is the air ahead of putting on his helmet, the
:18:31. > :18:35.balaclava furs. Fernando Alonso is busy thinking about this race, not
:18:35. > :18:40.the fact that he is 92 points behind Sebastian Vettel. Ferrari
:18:40. > :18:44.are more than 100 points behind Red Bull. When did his team start
:18:44. > :18:49.turning its attention to next year? If they were a normal team, and
:18:49. > :18:53.Ferrari are not, you would already have started. It is too big a gap.
:18:53. > :18:57.The pressure on Ferrari in Italy and other parts of the world is
:18:57. > :19:01.massive, and they can never give up. They have to keep on the struggle.
:19:01. > :19:06.Are much what the love to win here in Spain? And what about Jenson
:19:06. > :19:11.Button? He starts from 6th on the grid, so he will have to overtake a
:19:11. > :19:16.few people if he is going to do the business. However, that will not

:19:26. > :19:34.
:19:34. > :19:38.Canada, a race that he will be It has been said, it has been
:19:38. > :19:44.written, Canada was Jenson Button's greatest ever win. Where does it
:19:44. > :19:48.stack up? I would say yes, it is my greatest ever win. To come from
:19:48. > :19:54.last to first with everything else going on, it was definitely my best
:19:54. > :19:58.victory. Those conditions, you have to really feel your way around.
:19:59. > :20:04.Maybe it is from when I was karting, before I started racing, my father
:20:04. > :20:08.would not by me wet tyres. I had to go around on slicks. He said he
:20:08. > :20:12.wanted me to learn how to do that, to get car control. He says that
:20:12. > :20:16.now, but he could not afford to get wet tyres or could not be bothered.
:20:16. > :20:21.So he was tight and now he is claiming all the credit for your
:20:21. > :20:26.brilliant win. Of course, he is my father! I do not blame them! You
:20:26. > :20:29.may have been inside the car, but one of the best seats in the house
:20:29. > :20:32.was for the people stayed up to watch the victory. Would you like
:20:32. > :20:38.the chance to relive some of the best moments? I would love to, it
:20:38. > :20:45.is my first chance. It is not the for four hours, just the
:20:45. > :20:55.I do not think this it was a highlight. Highlights and low
:20:55. > :20:59.damage, a punch-up. I got a bad exit, moved over to the racing line.
:20:59. > :21:05.I looked in my mirrors, I saw an orange or rear wing, but I do not
:21:05. > :21:10.know if it was mine all of us. What was he doing? What was he
:21:10. > :21:14.doing? Did you feel like he was in the wrong place? At that point in
:21:14. > :21:18.time, I did not know how far he was out the inside of the outside, if
:21:18. > :21:23.you like. I cannot see a thing behind, I do not know what was
:21:23. > :21:27.going on. That was the first reaction, shock, how did that
:21:27. > :21:30.happen? It was so lucky that I do not get turned into the pit for.
:21:30. > :21:36.And no credence to the rumours that Lewis has come up against you a few
:21:36. > :21:42.times and but some cheeky passes on you. It was not you are laying down
:21:42. > :21:46.a marker. I do not want to crash! I was lucky to get away with it,
:21:46. > :21:51.without damage. I thought I had a puncture, but I did not. To get
:21:51. > :21:55.away with no damage was very lucky. I wanted to go on to win the race,
:21:55. > :22:01.so I would not do anything like that. Fernando Alonso has beached
:22:01. > :22:06.the Ferrari. Hans Jenson Button has got a puncture. But in his in last
:22:06. > :22:10.place. I was a long way at the inside, he accelerated into the
:22:10. > :22:15.corner, which was very strange, I think he was trying to find his
:22:16. > :22:19.feet on the new tyres. Button absolutely flying. How good were
:22:19. > :22:24.you feeling now? You were picking up places. Every move you make, it
:22:24. > :22:34.feels so good. A lot of people have said, where did your pace come
:22:34. > :22:40.
:22:40. > :22:44.from? Everyone was driving slowly, finds another grip. How close was
:22:44. > :22:48.this to being a big accident? does not look so bad. I saw the
:22:48. > :22:53.oversteer, I had to go on to the wet part of the second. It was just
:22:53. > :22:59.floating on the wet surface. That was a big moment, actually. That
:22:59. > :23:03.was the real hot feeling, that buzz. The seven-times world champion.
:23:03. > :23:08.Schumacher looks in his mayor, Button goes a long way round, and
:23:08. > :23:14.into second place. I did not know if I would get has Sebastian in the
:23:14. > :23:18.last lap. We can win this race. plan was to get it just right so I
:23:18. > :23:24.could get him with the DRS on the back straight. But I pushed him
:23:24. > :23:29.into a mistake. Vettel has gone white. Button wins a brilliant
:23:29. > :23:34.rays! It was nice to see him crack under pressure, or make a mistake
:23:34. > :23:38.and a pressure. A lot of fans wanted to see that. It was good to
:23:38. > :23:43.see that. I think we needed as a sport to see that. We are starting
:23:43. > :23:51.to think he was not human? No. I don't know. But it was an
:23:51. > :23:55.opportunity to see that he can make more this season, with all the
:23:55. > :24:00.pressure, we will see more of that and we can take advantage. So when
:24:00. > :24:06.you tell us you can win the title, it is not just DRS the. It is
:24:06. > :24:11.definitely genuine. -- the aspic. We were so happy that you could
:24:11. > :24:15.join us for that race. The pit lane is open. It might be a little bit
:24:15. > :24:21.loud for the next few minutes, but it is good for the crowds. Kamui
:24:21. > :24:25.Perhaps they will be taking photos of Jenson Button if it rains, but
:24:25. > :24:32.the chances are slim. There is something about Jenson, his first
:24:32. > :24:35.win came in strange conditions, he does well in wet-dry conditions.
:24:35. > :24:40.has a natural talent for that. He is able to find the balance. He
:24:40. > :24:44.talks about his father not giving in the tyres. In hindsight, it may
:24:44. > :24:47.be the best lesson he had. As far as the moment with his team-mate,
:24:47. > :24:52.sometimes we have seen these things produce World War Three, but it
:24:52. > :24:55.seems to have been dealt with quite well. They got the dream result,
:24:55. > :25:00.they won the Grand Prix. Had that not been the case, it would have
:25:00. > :25:08.been the story after the event. They had that to our window with a
:25:08. > :25:12.red flag. -- two-hour. Lewis had more speed, but that is in the
:25:12. > :25:15.history books now, a great win for Jenson. You know what it is like to
:25:15. > :25:25.tap your team-mate, you and Mika Hakkinen did the same thing. What
:25:25. > :25:25.
:25:25. > :25:31.is said after an incident like the gap, he did not break early.
:25:31. > :25:35.For the team, that was not good. I went on to finish second, to add
:25:35. > :25:41.insult to injury. What can you do? Don't do it again. Did you
:25:41. > :25:46.apologise? Of course, it was my fault. Very magnanimous, because I
:25:46. > :25:49.know what drivers can be like! Right in the heat of the moment,
:25:49. > :25:54.racing drivers do not like to apologise, so I commend you for
:25:54. > :25:57.that noble act. I think we should leave the pit lane for just a
:25:58. > :26:01.couple of moments, because people have been applauding Jenson
:26:01. > :26:04.Button's almost last week but questioning Lewis Hamilton. I
:26:04. > :26:11.suppose no one can really know what is going on with lows at the moment,
:26:11. > :26:15.but one man as a good idea, Niki Lauda won three titles with Lewis's
:26:15. > :26:18.team. He is with Ted Kravitz. of my viewers might have read
:26:18. > :26:22.strong comments that you have to say about Lewis Hamilton. What did
:26:22. > :26:27.you say? First of all, I want to correct things if they were
:26:27. > :26:31.interpreted the wrong way. I think that Hamilton is one of the top
:26:31. > :26:37.three guys in Formula One. He is the quickest guy. He is, for me, an
:26:37. > :26:43.amazing racing driver. What I criticised him on was, in Montreal,
:26:43. > :26:46.attacking his team-mate between the pit wall and Jenson's car, where
:26:46. > :26:51.unfortunately he had to stop. Luckily enough, Jenson could finish
:26:51. > :26:54.the race and even win it. This I criticise, to attack the team-mates
:26:54. > :26:59.so hard. They both might have stopped, and for McLaren nothing
:26:59. > :27:05.would have happened. This was my criticism. I say again, he is the
:27:05. > :27:09.best guide today. If he would ease off a bit and get the points he
:27:09. > :27:13.needs for the championship, this is what I criticise him for. To be
:27:13. > :27:18.world champion, you have to collect points, and for two races he has
:27:18. > :27:22.collected none. Do you think he has the mindset of an overtaking driver
:27:22. > :27:27.who does not think of the long view? I can tell you, between
:27:27. > :27:32.racing drivers, I have been won and I know. Lewis is aggressive, so
:27:32. > :27:36.some guys will be frightened when he turns up in the back, the slower
:27:36. > :27:40.guys. They move over, and this is happening in Formula One. But if
:27:40. > :27:44.you want to make a point as a racing driver, like Jenson has to
:27:44. > :27:48.do, you should not move over, because if he continues to move
:27:48. > :27:53.over, Lewis will be gone and he can never think of winning races again.
:27:53. > :27:59.Between racing drivers, there is very hard work. Some guys he know
:27:59. > :28:02.will move, and Jenson did not. I think Jenson did not even see him.
:28:02. > :28:06.Schumacher was the same thing in the past, still today. When he
:28:06. > :28:10.turns up, everybody knows there is no compromise. If you let anything
:28:11. > :28:15.happen, he will drive through the whole field and win, and nobody
:28:15. > :28:19.wants that. Niki Lauda echoing everybody's thoughts, they want to
:28:19. > :28:24.see Lewis Hamilton continued to be as dramatic and brilliant as ever.
:28:24. > :28:27.David, before you go to the commentary box, Lewis Hamilton
:28:27. > :28:32.tends to bounce back from a difficult weekend with good
:28:32. > :28:35.performances. He is a driven young man here. The problem is he has not
:28:35. > :28:40.got a quick enough car. If he was on the front row, he would not have
:28:40. > :28:43.these incidents. He would just drive off into the distance. We are
:28:43. > :28:48.analysing his decisions behind the wheel, but the focus is for McLaren
:28:48. > :28:52.to deliver the fastest car. Funny, that, Vettel is not hitting anybody.
:28:52. > :28:56.Nice to see you, good luck in the commentary box today. I suppose
:28:56. > :29:00.around here people could hang out on the beach, hang out in the city,
:29:00. > :29:03.but the thing to do is to come down to what was once a fish market and
:29:03. > :29:13.what Formula One cars flying around. It is a great place for the fans,
:29:13. > :29:35.
:29:35. > :29:40.and the weather is not either. -- onto the grid. When we get there,
:29:40. > :29:43.the first place we will arrive at is between the Force India and the
:29:43. > :29:47.Renault, Nick Heidfeld and Adrian Sutil. Pirelli are not happy,
:29:48. > :29:51.because both of those drivers did not go out for the final part of
:29:51. > :29:56.qualifying yesterday to save tyres. Pirelli and Formula One are
:29:56. > :29:59.concerned that is not good for the show. The rules are there, and
:29:59. > :30:02.people circumvent them to their best advantage. The teams are
:30:02. > :30:07.within their rights to do whatever they can to give them the best
:30:07. > :30:17.chance of picking up points. I do not have any real problem. If they
:30:17. > :30:22.
:30:22. > :30:29.want to insert a new rule, then do anything to give the team, sponsors
:30:29. > :30:37.and the people, the best chance. This is a treat. Nico Rosberg...
:30:37. > :30:45.Hello? Thanks a lot! He gave me a little smile. I hope that isn't
:30:45. > :30:54.indicative of today! I will let you fire around and chat to people.
:30:54. > :31:01.Nick Heidfeld? May I just have a word? Egress? We have so, it'll be
:31:01. > :31:09.interesting. There could be a chance for us. Can you get back to
:31:09. > :31:13.some of the performances at the beginning of the season? It will be
:31:13. > :31:17.difficult but it will be interesting to see what will happen.
:31:17. > :31:23.Some people think the changes will hurt us but obviously I hope it
:31:24. > :31:28.will not be too bad. Have a great race. There is a man I would love
:31:28. > :31:33.to speak to. This man picked up a couple of European Cups and his
:31:33. > :31:39.time. Trevor Francis, the first million-pound player. What does he
:31:39. > :31:42.think of the current earnings and Formula One? Nice to see you. You
:31:42. > :31:47.were the first million-pound player in British football. What do you
:31:47. > :31:52.think of the current money and the earnings and Formula One? It is a
:31:52. > :31:59.bit absurd, 32 years ago I went for 1 million and that broke the
:31:59. > :32:07.record by about 500,000. Today, it has got out of control. It would be
:32:07. > :32:16.too long before we talk about 100 they pounds. Lionel Messi? Ronaldo?
:32:16. > :32:20.One of the two. I must ask, you want to European Cup medals under
:32:20. > :32:26.Brian Clough, were due place in in the formal on context? How would he
:32:26. > :32:30.do? He could manage any team, he was so good to get success with
:32:30. > :32:34.Derby and Forest, that was unbelievable. He would quite like
:32:34. > :32:39.to be with McLaren, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, that would suit
:32:39. > :32:46.him. How special is this? We have a grandstand on the track, this is
:32:46. > :32:49.like walking out at Old Trafford. am nervous. This is an unbelievable
:32:49. > :32:54.ambience. And a great occasion and I'm really looking forward to the
:32:54. > :33:02.race. You will get lots of e-mails asking where you got that pass
:33:02. > :33:12.from! He is a legend. Over here there has been an upside to the
:33:12. > :33:14.
:33:14. > :33:20.Force India team. Adrian Sutil... Can we stake in? No, it's not! Do
:33:20. > :33:28.you remember me? What has happened? The first time in Q 3. Great
:33:28. > :33:33.performance? It was good. I'm really happy. You can see. It is a
:33:33. > :33:38.long race. Let's hope you are happy at the end. It is an important day
:33:38. > :33:41.but I have a good feeling. We have a good strategy. Only Eddie Jordan
:33:41. > :33:50.could start an interview like this and not ask, what are those class
:33:50. > :33:56.is about? Just... Fun! We have interviewed your team-mate, how
:33:56. > :33:59.good is he? Great, we have a good relationship. He is always pushing.
:33:59. > :34:05.We are always close together and it's very good for the team so we
:34:05. > :34:14.both score points, hopefully, and hopefully today. Well done,
:34:14. > :34:16.congratulations. It is worth pointing out that one has
:34:16. > :34:21.qualifying, he deserves congratulations but Paul di Resta
:34:21. > :34:25.is starting and 12, he had a very difficult weekend? The most
:34:25. > :34:28.difficult. They have a policy in this team that the allied the third
:34:28. > :34:33.driver to go out in one of the sessions on the early morning on a
:34:33. > :34:38.Friday and what happened? He crashed. Which curtailed quickly
:34:38. > :34:46.the about of running that Paul di Resta had in the car. Sort of place
:34:46. > :34:53.was a big success. We talk about Jensen Button, sitting in 6th. He
:34:53. > :34:58.would like to see him. He isn't around. If he wants to improve his
:34:58. > :35:02.racing, he must sort out a Saturday? He must sort out
:35:02. > :35:11.qualifying, he is a real contender but not from 6th place. He has to
:35:11. > :35:18.up his game. Time to say hello to your old friend. He is running
:35:18. > :35:25.away! Will we have many more races here in Valencia? I hope so,
:35:25. > :35:29.certainly for a long time. Can you see in the future, two races? Is an
:35:29. > :35:34.occasion for having two races so close to each other, in terms of
:35:34. > :35:38.the calendar? Can Spain sustain this? It's not easy to sort out
:35:38. > :35:42.properly. We have been with Barcelona for a long time but you
:35:42. > :35:47.will see what happens. When you say that, that makes it sounds like you
:35:47. > :35:53.say Barcelona have been with us for long enough? Do you think Barcelona
:35:53. > :36:01.has had its time? I don't think so. We will wait to see how we can work
:36:01. > :36:08.things out. They have been good for us. It's all very new. Your views
:36:08. > :36:18.on Canada? Wonderful. I hope this one is like that. Placid and
:36:18. > :36:20.
:36:20. > :36:26.Domingo is here! Wonderful to see you. A long-term fan? Always, many
:36:26. > :36:33.years. Were you think Fernando Alonso sits among the great
:36:33. > :36:40.drivers? I hope the championship goes better. I hope people like
:36:40. > :36:44.Fernando and other drivers, they start to win races. I know they
:36:44. > :36:49.have taken the power of Red Bull, but let's see. I noticed before the
:36:49. > :36:55.start of the lap earlier, you were with Fernando Alonso. Are you a
:36:55. > :37:01.guest of his? I think he is looking forward so much. He would rather
:37:01. > :37:10.like to be on pole position. But for his place isn't bad and for me,
:37:10. > :37:19.he is a great champion. And I also hope that it is a safe race and a
:37:19. > :37:29.clean race also. Ferrari fan? this month. Do you have fun? No! I
:37:29. > :37:30.
:37:30. > :37:34.don't. But I will... Lovely to chat. He spends a lot of time in his home
:37:34. > :37:42.in America so he would hope for the American Grand Prix. Jensen
:37:42. > :37:47.Button... One second? Can you repeat last week? It is different,
:37:47. > :37:55.the conditions today. I have made it difficult for myself but we can
:37:55. > :37:59.have a good race and with DRS, we can have some good racing. This is
:37:59. > :38:06.the man that really makes a difference to world champions?
:38:06. > :38:15.the microphone to him. Mrs Michael muscles. So called for the obvious
:38:15. > :38:19.reasons... I have to go! There won't be a lot of rain? We talk
:38:19. > :38:23.about in normal circumstances that was very good, but in these
:38:23. > :38:27.conditions, it is just a step too far. Let's turn around and look at
:38:27. > :38:32.the Grid. Right behind Lewis Hamilton, he put on such a show
:38:32. > :38:36.last year, it was a fantastic lap in qualifying yesterday I'm looking
:38:36. > :38:43.towards the start of the grid, the huge grandstand, what do you expect
:38:43. > :38:46.to happen at the start? I hope he does not change. The recent
:38:46. > :38:51.criticism of his driving style, that is why I turn on the telly, I
:38:51. > :38:57.want to see and drive like this. And the sea with Kobayashi another
:38:57. > :39:01.aggressive drivers. Niki Lauda said the same. This is special. We can
:39:01. > :39:05.always be guaranteed something dynamic from this man. It would be
:39:05. > :39:15.lovely to grab hold of Lewis Hamilton. How different are these
:39:15. > :39:17.
:39:17. > :39:22.grades to the times when you were bombing Jordan? -- running Jordan.
:39:22. > :39:25.The teams, they have not got any clue about what is going on. They
:39:25. > :39:31.have got peripheral vision. They're completely focused on what they
:39:31. > :39:37.need to do. Everybody is in one area. How to get the best start and
:39:37. > :39:42.the best result. Nothing else matters. When you consider the
:39:43. > :39:52.speed with which Sebastian Vettel set the pole time, the first man to
:39:52. > :39:57.dip under 1:37. The 3.3 mile circuit, Sebastian Vettel on pole
:39:57. > :40:06.yet again. Let's look at that very slow entry. The stop watch does not
:40:06. > :40:13.begin until he crosses the line. 180 mph. The approach zone. Down to
:40:13. > :40:17.just 60 mph. The apex. Hard on the throttle and very close to the war
:40:17. > :40:27.on the exit. The straight circuit Stan chicane. Pumping across the
:40:27. > :40:34.chicane, running nicely. 190 mph. The sweeping right hand. Turn No. 8,
:40:34. > :40:38.leading into the swing bridge. Heavy braking through the exit.
:40:38. > :40:47.Just trying to step out and eager on to the throttle. Spinning out
:40:47. > :40:53.the rear tyres. This long, sweeping, turn. 195 mph. The long straight.
:40:53. > :41:00.The braking zone. He really maximises the width of the track.
:41:00. > :41:05.Minimising the angle of the corners. Turn 13, 14. 90 mph. Really chasing
:41:05. > :41:12.that throttle well through there. Straight ahead, despite being long
:41:12. > :41:22.and left hand in the approach, 185 mph. The braking son, turns 17.
:41:22. > :41:24.
:41:24. > :41:28.Second gear. Almost a hairpin. Hook up, one corner. Sweeping through at
:41:28. > :41:34.185 mph, the final part of the lap and the easiest part to make a
:41:34. > :41:44.mistake. The last corner. Turn 25. Trying to get away, into the pit
:41:44. > :41:47.
:41:47. > :41:53.straight. Right across the line. And it's another pole position.
:41:54. > :42:01.have made a way out the back of what I call the fish markets, this
:42:01. > :42:11.wonderful architecture. First, let's hear from Christian Horner,
:42:11. > :42:17.
:42:17. > :42:24.who has drivers on 1 and 2. Sadly, just as he wanted to hear from the
:42:24. > :42:31.team bus at Red Bull, we could not. One of the big worries for Red Bull
:42:31. > :42:35.is what we call the double DRS zone. One single activation point. This
:42:35. > :42:40.reduces the drag and makes a can't go faster and in the eyes of
:42:40. > :42:45.Formula One, improves overtaking. This is the detection zone. Over
:42:45. > :42:48.the bridge and then the first and second Activation zone. People say
:42:48. > :42:52.the reason for Sebastian Vettel slipping was that he was our that
:42:52. > :42:56.this was coming up and he did not want Jensen Button to overtake. The
:42:56. > :43:02.problem of having both zones is the first one is to overtake and the
:43:02. > :43:06.second is to pull away. I have a different view. I think he will see
:43:06. > :43:11.Sebastian Vettel, if he makes a decent start, or whoever leads into
:43:11. > :43:15.the first corner, making virtually a qualifying lap because he wants
:43:15. > :43:18.to brake that one second marker and if he can, it will be so much more
:43:18. > :43:23.difficult because he will not be allowed to be into the zone to
:43:23. > :43:28.activate. If I was a driver on pole position, for I would do everything
:43:28. > :43:38.in my power to make that big start. Here we are, Rubens Barrichello, he
:43:38. > :43:38.
:43:38. > :43:41.won here, Petrov starts in the 11th. They have not been as quick and
:43:41. > :43:47.McLaren say they have more downforce and they will look after
:43:47. > :43:51.their tyres better. And they have brought different things, they have
:43:51. > :43:56.a new upgraded rear wing and the front wing. I think McLaren are
:43:56. > :44:02.still in this out. There pushing very hard. Sadly, I don't see the
:44:02. > :44:07.same initiative coming from Ferrari. I wonder what is going through that
:44:07. > :44:11.man's mind? He wants the perfect start. To get in front of his team-
:44:11. > :44:18.mate. Canada was pretty special. Now, time for something completely
:44:18. > :44:23.different. The tight, twists and turns of the sun-drenched city
:44:23. > :44:29.circuit. They say opposites attract, it's time to find out. David
:44:29. > :44:33.Blundell, David Coulthard, time for the 2011 European Grand Prix, live
:44:33. > :44:37.on BBC One and BBC One hitch be. Sebastian Vettel on pole position
:44:37. > :44:47.but there are 23 men right behind him, ready to beaten to the
:44:47. > :44:49.
:44:49. > :44:53.chequered flag. Let's hope this one # So you want to be a rock
:44:53. > :44:55.superstar # And live large, big house, five
:44:55. > :45:03.cars # Coming up in the world
:45:03. > :45:08.# Don't trust # So you want to be a big superstar

:45:18. > :45:28.
:45:28. > :45:33.track for round eight of the Formula One world championship.
:45:33. > :45:38.It's the European Grand Prix. The Valencia Street Circuit by name,
:45:38. > :45:44.partly a street circuit by nature, 25 corners, spread out around the
:45:44. > :45:48.port, the Mediterranean sea gently lapping against the nearby beach.
:45:48. > :45:52.That beach would be a very attractive alternative for the
:45:52. > :45:57.drivers this afternoon, instead of four layers of fire proof clothing
:45:58. > :46:02.and cockpit temperatures of well over 50 degrees centigrade. Can you
:46:02. > :46:06.-- you can see the three sectors the lap is split into. We will
:46:06. > :46:13.check those out during the Grand Prix. Look at those temperatures,
:46:13. > :46:16.47 on the track already and 27 air tremure. David, what are the key
:46:16. > :46:19.challenges today? Well, track temperature, air temperature going
:46:19. > :46:23.up. That challenge mean that's everything they learnt through the
:46:23. > :46:27.relatively cool Friday practice and slightly cooler qualifying on
:46:27. > :46:35.Saturday, their predictions on how far the tyres will go, changes. Now
:46:35. > :46:39.the track is a bit more rubbered in than today. GP2 has put down extra
:46:39. > :46:42.Pirelli rubber on the temporary race track. As the temperature goes
:46:42. > :46:46.up it changes the chemical interaction with the tyre and
:46:46. > :46:51.circuit. The predictions going into the event is that a two-stop race
:46:51. > :46:55.is the fastest way to go through, using three sets of tyres. It's
:46:55. > :47:01.quicker by about seven seconds. I suspect that will narrow in and
:47:01. > :47:05.make a three-stop valid. I agree. Mclaren are saying they won't run
:47:05. > :47:09.and hide in front of us, the Red Bulls will not be flying off into
:47:09. > :47:14.the distance and out of site. You have to say, Mclaren could easily
:47:14. > :47:21.have won the last three Grand Prix, they did win in can da. Do you
:47:21. > :47:24.share their confidence? The only thing that matters is the Czechered
:47:24. > :47:28.flag. Mclaren were victors in Canada. Before that it was Red Bull.
:47:28. > :47:32.If we look at the underlying race pace through Friday practice, where
:47:32. > :47:38.the teams tend to run some fuel, heavy fuel and do some race
:47:38. > :47:43.simulations, it was Red Bull, Ferrari, Mclaren, Mercedes and
:47:43. > :47:48.Renault in that order. That was Friday and the only time it really
:47:48. > :47:52.mat serz what happens today. It was critical for Mark Webber to get on
:47:52. > :47:56.the front row alongside Sebastien Vettel, so a Red Bull lockout for
:47:56. > :48:01.the third time this season on the front row. I think this man, Lewis
:48:01. > :48:07.Hamilton, has got to attack in the first lap. He must not, they'll
:48:07. > :48:14.want to stay somewhere within a second when they get into that
:48:14. > :48:18.detection zone for the DRS That starts at end of lap two. Lewis
:48:18. > :48:22.Hamilton, same grid position, leapfroged up and challenged
:48:22. > :48:25.Sebastien Vettel into turn two. hearing there is a big difference
:48:25. > :48:35.between the left and right-hand side of the grid in terms of grid.
:48:35. > :48:35.
:48:35. > :49:24.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds
:49:24. > :49:28.Let's see how they line up for the through qualifying, past the 107%
:49:28. > :49:33.barrier. Though that's not always applied any way. So, we have a full
:49:33. > :49:37.grid. Not aware of anybody needing to start from the pit lane at this
:49:37. > :49:41.point, as the mechanics take off the tyre covers. Those that are
:49:41. > :49:46.from 11th on the grid backwards, can run whatever tyre they want.
:49:46. > :49:56.Those that are in the top ten have to use the tyre that they set their
:49:56. > :50:01.fastest time on. With the exception, I'd imagine, of well Heidfeld did
:50:01. > :50:03.do two sectors. I think he has to start on those tyres. Those
:50:03. > :50:10.uncomfortable situation yesterday where two drivers didn't even
:50:10. > :50:16.bother to set a time. That was Sutil and Heidfeld.
:50:16. > :50:22.So we're hearing that Petrov and Perez are starting the race on the
:50:22. > :50:27.harder compound tyre, the prime, as it's known, the medium compound.
:50:27. > :50:32.You'll see the softer tyre with the yellow banding on it on the outside,
:50:32. > :50:40.which enables us to identify those. We know that the key runners at the
:50:40. > :50:45.front will all be on that soft tyre. Spanish flags are waving. Fernando
:50:45. > :50:50.Alonso, never been in the top three on the grid here. Might be his home
:50:50. > :50:54.turf, but it's not been that successful for him. He's a happy
:50:54. > :50:58.boy right now. He's saying the last few Grand Prixs have been the best
:50:58. > :51:01.in his career. That's not in terms of results, but he feels he's
:51:01. > :51:05.getting the maximum oust himself. That's interesting, because I
:51:05. > :51:09.remember in carting, I'd give my scores out of ten in performance,
:51:10. > :51:12.very rarely if I won a race I would give myself ten, but sometimes you
:51:13. > :51:16.would if you had a good battle through the field. It's in the mind
:51:16. > :51:21.of the holder. He's fired up and thinks this championship is still
:51:21. > :51:24.possible. Seems a long shot to me, but they came back last year.
:51:24. > :51:28.bit of sports psychology there from Fernando Alonso, as always. It
:51:28. > :51:34.seemles we have quite a split with some of the midfield team that's
:51:34. > :51:38.are going to try an each-way bet with Renault, Sauber and Williams.
:51:38. > :51:44.These are the detection zones into turn eight. Then the next two long
:51:44. > :51:47.straights where they can be activated. It's a double DRS, drag
:51:47. > :51:53.reduction system, where the rear wings open and the cars gain
:51:53. > :51:57.somewhere around eight miles per hour. I think will be more
:51:57. > :52:01.successful here than in Canada. The second straight is longer than
:52:01. > :52:06.Canada. We know the Canadian pit straight, where the two Mclarens
:52:06. > :52:14.got together, you use all that track. You do. On that run on the
:52:14. > :52:17.second activation point, between turn 14 and 17 it not -- is not a
:52:17. > :52:22.natural straight. It make it's difficult to see whether you're
:52:22. > :52:28.going left or right. It will remain to be seen houp the double
:52:28. > :52:34.activation will work. It's not available to the drivers until the
:52:34. > :52:38.end, well until they're into the third lap. That is why Vettel will
:52:38. > :52:42.particularly be wanting to scamper off at the front and get himself
:52:42. > :52:47.more than a second clear of whoever's per suing him, so that
:52:47. > :52:53.they can't breeze past him in the straights, as they warm up their
:52:53. > :52:57.tyres and head to the grid. Doing their clutch five-point checks.
:52:57. > :53:00.Perfect example there. You hear that? It runs into the limiter, as
:53:00. > :53:05.they push a button and it finds the bite point for the clutch. It's
:53:05. > :53:09.just a procedure much the driver presses a button and holds the
:53:09. > :53:14.clutch open apbtd system does the rest to find out how much wear is
:53:14. > :53:18.on the clutch plate to get a great launch. It's a curved grid. Those
:53:18. > :53:22.on the left will find themselves pointing, they need to point
:53:22. > :53:28.towards the first corner. They don't want to take off and have to
:53:28. > :53:34.turn the car immediately. You could easily break traction then at the
:53:34. > :53:38.tail end of the field begin to finally line up. We await the five
:53:38. > :53:43.red lights. We're looking at the back of the field for a man with
:53:43. > :53:47.the green flag. They stayed on for just three seconds in all the other
:53:47. > :53:51.races, we've seen this weekend. They're off! Vettel looked a bit
:53:51. > :53:56.tardy off pole position. Webber is going on the outside. He's close in.
:53:56. > :54:01.The Ferraris are away. Massa with a tremendous start. Massa up the
:54:01. > :54:07.inside then and Webber. He has to yield. Alonso takes that place back.
:54:07. > :54:10.Ferrari then third and fourth. Not a great start for Lewis Hamilton.
:54:10. > :54:14.Alonso maintains that position into the turn four and five chicane.
:54:14. > :54:22.Look at Vettel doing exactly what he needs to do. No contact at the
:54:22. > :54:27.back. Tremendous skill of driving at the back there, David. They've
:54:27. > :54:31.managed, and we have a big lock up there from Paul di Resta. Amazingly
:54:31. > :54:35.they got through the first two turns without any contact. That's
:54:35. > :54:39.unusual for this track. It seems the win threr was Alonso. Hamilton
:54:39. > :54:44.and Button both dropping back. Bad starts from the Mclarens. Nico
:54:44. > :54:49.Rosberg in sixth place. Look at the lead Vettel has got already. It's
:54:49. > :54:55.going to be very interesting now to see what Ferrari can do about Mark
:54:55. > :54:58.Webber. Lewis Hamilton in fifth, Rosberg, Jenson Button, Paul di
:54:58. > :55:03.Resta attack being like crazy. He's also a front wing in the last two
:55:03. > :55:08.races. It doesn't seem to have slowed him down in terms of
:55:08. > :55:17.aggressive overtakes. Exhaust smoke coming out of the front of the
:55:17. > :55:27.Renault. It's just where the inlet for the radiator. It's blowing the
:55:27. > :55:27.
:55:27. > :55:32.dust put down oil to soak up. Around 150 kilograms on board. I
:55:32. > :55:37.love this camera shot you can really see the cars, even at that
:55:37. > :55:47.speed, sliding around. Tremendous camera angle. I hope besee plenty
:55:47. > :56:00.
:56:00. > :56:07.of that through the race. Vettel behind the leader. That's the kind
:56:07. > :56:13.of spread that you get early in a Grand Prix in estably. Kobayashi 13,
:56:13. > :56:20.then Buemi. Petrov had a very poor start. Perez 16th. Alguersuari 17th.
:56:20. > :56:27.Glock up to 18th ahead of both Lotus, they're 19 and 20. 21 is
:56:27. > :56:33.Maldonado. 22, d'Ambrosio. Karthikeyan remains in 2478 place.
:56:33. > :56:38.Webber begins to pull a gap on the Ferraris. Hamilton is hanging onto
:56:38. > :56:42.them. Rosberg absolutely flying off the start again. If the Mercedes is
:56:42. > :56:46.struggling on tyre degradation as we are led to believe, that could
:56:46. > :56:53.be quite a headache for Button today. He has the use of that DRS.
:56:53. > :56:59.We will find out as we see, who is that actually? Glock and Kovalainen
:56:59. > :57:03.getting up close on the run through 12, 13, 14, so that's the corner
:57:03. > :57:07.obviously just after where Mark Webber went flying last year. One
:57:07. > :57:13.of the potential overtaking places. Mercedes have said they have been
:57:13. > :57:17.eating up the rear tyres on a Long Run. Initially the get away for
:57:17. > :57:21.Sebastien Vettel was a bit tardy. It was so much better than what
:57:21. > :57:25.Lewis Hamilton had. He was passed before turn one. A complete
:57:25. > :57:29.reversal of what we saw last year. Massa goes for the inside on Webber,
:57:30. > :57:33.backs out of it. That allows Alonso to go round the outside of his
:57:33. > :57:39.team-mate and retake the place. There you see Rosberg getting round
:57:39. > :57:44.the outside of Button. Rosberg very patient on the inside of turn one.
:57:44. > :57:49.He, -- turn two actually. Watch Massa flick past Alonso. He can't
:57:49. > :57:53.seem to get the starts right. Massa's got himself into third,
:57:53. > :58:00.challenging for second. Alonso, the wiley old fox that he is, goes down
:58:00. > :58:03.the outside and takes third place back. So a great run down to the
:58:03. > :58:07.first corner, tremendous skill. Massa was the man getting the work
:58:07. > :58:12.done there. At the moment Button is fine, but he's around the outside.
:58:12. > :58:18.Rosberg just gets on the throttle early and drives clean past him,
:58:18. > :58:24.somehow. They all make it work. Vettel 1.8 seconds ahead of Webber
:58:24. > :58:27.now. Out of the DRS zone as they enter onto the third lapment
:58:28. > :58:32.Terrible start from Petrov. You were counting off the running order
:58:32. > :58:37.there, he made a terrible start. Renault have in the past, then Toro
:58:37. > :58:44.Rosso on the inside. A man that used to base himself here in
:58:44. > :58:48.Valencia, he call today home for a period of time. There we see in-car
:58:48. > :58:53.with Lewis Hamilton, absolutely boging down as he goes off the line.
:58:53. > :58:56.Massa with a flier. Not really committed. I feel if Massa was
:58:56. > :59:02.Hamilton he probably would have made that pass stick. It's as sweet
:59:02. > :59:08.as you like. When you get the revs, the clutch activation, everything
:59:08. > :59:13.spot on, you just take off. A too few revs and the engine bogs down.
:59:13. > :59:18.Too many and the wheels spin up. The harder you try to fix it, the
:59:18. > :59:23.worse you make it. Vettel does a new fastest lap of the race. 2.2
:59:23. > :59:29.seconds clear of Webber in second place. Then Alonso, Massa, Hamilton,
:59:29. > :59:35.Rosberg, Button, Schumacher, Sutil, Heidfeld. We're on board with
:59:35. > :59:39.Button and looking at the back of Nico Rosberg and he is already
:59:39. > :59:43.nearly nine seconds off the lead as they said into lap four. This is a
:59:44. > :59:50.key moment where he needs to be within one second as they get into
:59:50. > :59:52.the braking zone here. He should be able to open his DRS as they come
:59:52. > :59:57.across bridge, the Swing Bridge, which you mentioned yesterday,
:59:57. > :00:03.opens up every night. It lets the super yachts in and out of the
:00:03. > :00:07.harbour. Let's see if his rear wing pops open. Yes, it is open. It's
:00:07. > :00:17.not getting him very far at the moment. The traction of the
:00:17. > :00:20.
:00:20. > :00:24.Mercedes off turn ten seems to be cherry, end terms of opening that
:00:24. > :00:31.wing. He is again quite late getting that opened on the he has
:00:31. > :00:36.to wait until the activation point. Is that enough? Right now, it's not.
:00:36. > :00:45.Mercedes is good enough. He looks like a sitting duck for later in
:00:45. > :00:51.the race. We can see Jensen pulling that pass. In the McLaren garage
:00:51. > :00:58.the general sense of irritation is with Lewis Hamilton's side. The
:00:58. > :01:03.feeling is the production overheated while sitting on a line.
:01:03. > :01:13.They might have to pet litter and get a few more laps on the tyres. -
:01:13. > :01:15.
:01:15. > :01:20.- pet litter. -- pit later. sense it is only a matter of time
:01:20. > :01:28.and he is now 10 seconds of the leader, Jensen Button. He has won
:01:28. > :01:32.car underneath them and he is faster than Mercedes. It is
:01:32. > :01:36.interesting to see how the her delivering the pace, there is no
:01:36. > :01:41.question that McLaren is quicker. But there are areas were the
:01:41. > :01:45.Mercedes is a little bit quicker. Once again, the Mercedes just
:01:45. > :01:50.drives off to Number 10 and that means at the point where Jensen
:01:50. > :01:58.Button crosses the line to open his DRS, he is too far back. He has not
:01:58. > :02:06.used his Kers system. Does he have a problem? Let us see if he uses
:02:07. > :02:14.that coming out of turn number 14. Maybe he wants to keep that. So
:02:14. > :02:20.that he can use it for DRS. And he does indeed. He wants both toys to
:02:20. > :02:27.play with. Now he has got an extra straight line. The Mercedes topped
:02:27. > :02:33.the speed track yesterday in every session? These cars have got
:02:33. > :02:40.identical engines. The down for us to the drag of the Mercedes engine,
:02:41. > :02:47.as we can see... Coming around the wall. Turnover 24. And into the
:02:47. > :02:52.apex. Much better drive this time. It is that concertina effect, he
:02:52. > :03:01.gets closer and on the gearbox. Much better speed on turn number
:03:01. > :03:05.one. Well! Sir perv! The brakes are so powerful, they stop you at 5.5
:03:05. > :03:10.times the force of gravity and that is the speed differential, if you
:03:10. > :03:15.are on the brakes five metres later, that was incredible footage. Just
:03:15. > :03:20.watch this, what's the difference as Jensen Button brakes later and
:03:20. > :03:25.Nico Rosberg was a little bit surprised, there. Steaming past.
:03:25. > :03:31.And duly did commit to that braking zone. He needed to get that done.
:03:31. > :03:35.He is a dozen seconds off the leader. We will wait to see, let's
:03:35. > :03:43.have a look. That is interesting. Ferrari, the last two laps, they
:03:43. > :03:49.have matched Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber's times. The gap is
:03:49. > :03:56.only two seconds between Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. And Alonso
:03:56. > :03:59.is closing fast. Will he get the advantage of the DRS? You must say
:03:59. > :04:03.that the Friday analysis, suggesting Red Bull would be
:04:03. > :04:09.followed by a Ferrari and McLaren, that seems to be playing out. But
:04:09. > :04:11.the big test will be over the next 10 laps, they are wrong this option
:04:12. > :04:19.tyre and the prediction is they will run out of performance after
:04:19. > :04:28.15 laps. Who can make this tyre go there for this? End to that number
:04:28. > :04:32.six. Coming towards the end. Only one 10th faster than Mark Webber
:04:32. > :04:40.and Fernando Alonso. Remember, he has to get within one second of
:04:40. > :04:46.Mark Webber into the braking career to get a double helping of that
:04:46. > :04:55.extra speed in those two, long back straight. He is one 10th of a
:04:55. > :05:02.second shy of that. Felipe Massa, just falling back from Fernando
:05:02. > :05:10.Alonso. Let's have a look at Jensen Button. He actually lost quite a
:05:10. > :05:18.lot of time. Well, he included that overtake in to turn number two. Not
:05:18. > :05:22.a great flat for Jensen Button. -- lap. Let us see if Jensen Button
:05:22. > :05:28.starts to come back towards Lewis Hamilton. Six seconds off the lead.
:05:28. > :05:34.Good work, Mark Webber. You are doing a good job with those tyres.
:05:34. > :05:39.That was a friendly word from his engineer. At times they are nine
:05:39. > :05:43.seconds off pole position. Whether that is the fuel load or keeping
:05:43. > :05:47.the tyres intact. They must be so careful in the traction area. What
:05:48. > :05:52.can we do to protect those rear tyres? It is all about controlling
:05:52. > :05:55.the amount of load and the amount of slip that you put through those
:05:55. > :06:02.retires on the corner. Braking, you want to maximise everything. You
:06:02. > :06:05.brake as late as you can and the grip that the track allows but in a
:06:05. > :06:11.qualifying game might just go full power and except Sun spending of
:06:11. > :06:14.the rear tyres. You don't want to do that you. You need to not
:06:14. > :06:23.believe that black market on the surface. That isn't available on
:06:23. > :06:29.Your tyres any more. Sebastian Vettel has picked up the pace. That
:06:29. > :06:32.looks one day late and $1 short but he gets away with it. Kobayashi on
:06:32. > :06:39.Barrichello. Remember that amazing movie did on Fernando Alonso here
:06:39. > :06:46.last year? That is the battle for 12th and 13th place and it's easy
:06:46. > :06:55.to forget that this textbook racing isn't just at the front. A everyone
:06:55. > :06:58.has watched last year, they know his tricks! That looked just a
:06:59. > :07:04.touch ambitious. Fillipi massive the fastest through the first
:07:04. > :07:09.sector of anyone. Fernando Alonso, he is about to punish Mark Webber
:07:09. > :07:15.for that scruffy lap. Six tenths so when and his team-mate. And this is
:07:15. > :07:20.the result. How much closer here's and they both have got DRS
:07:20. > :07:26.available but Fernando Alonso will have his rear wing open. And nine,
:07:26. > :07:30.Mark Webber is under attack. They reckon that DRS was worth one
:07:30. > :07:35.second in qualifying and diffuse that everywhere during qualifying.
:07:35. > :07:39.During the race, it is only during those designated areas. That is a
:07:39. > :07:44.useful tool for Fernando Alonso, he goes very wide at the exit of
:07:44. > :07:49.turned 20. The artificial grass started to pull away from the
:07:49. > :07:53.circuit. With too many people running wide, that could be an
:07:53. > :07:58.issue later in the race. Once so did the fastest middle sector of
:07:59. > :08:05.the race. That is with his rear wing wide open. He gets plenty of
:08:05. > :08:09.extra strength. Fernando Alonso on the exit of to number 20, opens his
:08:09. > :08:16.steering wheel because he realises he has not got enough grip so he
:08:16. > :08:26.could go off the track. And he recognises earlier that he was too
:08:26. > :08:32.
:08:32. > :08:37.committed to that. Just look after you retire as! -- you're rear tyres.
:08:37. > :08:40.And we have some use... That give Mark Webber precious breathing
:08:40. > :08:44.space because he is getting through those times quicker than Fernando
:08:44. > :08:47.Alonso. That is what they were worried about on the grid, they
:08:47. > :08:51.were telling us they needed to watch out for the Ferrari because
:08:51. > :08:55.they are easier on their tyres and us and we will see if it pushes
:08:55. > :09:03.Mark Webber into the three stops. Strategy Wise, Sebastien Vettel has
:09:03. > :09:12.the luxury of choosing two or three stops. The two-stop strategy his
:09:12. > :09:19.second at -- seven seconds quicker by the end of the race. Hamilton
:09:19. > :09:24.hanging on. So, 6.7 seconds covering the top five at the moment.
:09:24. > :09:29.We have got a race on our hands. It will not be that easy for Mark
:09:29. > :09:34.Webber this afternoon. Ferrari looking handy. I think the man that
:09:34. > :09:37.has the comfort zone is Sebastian Vettel but there's only one point
:09:37. > :09:42.gap on Mark Webber, he is under pressure and he should have the
:09:42. > :09:49.pace to defend. Let us remind ourselves that Felipe Massa is
:09:49. > :09:53.hanging in also. Only two seconds behind Fernando Alonso. Who will
:09:53. > :10:02.blink first? Because the undercut on the pit stop winner, if you get
:10:02. > :10:08.those new option tyres, you will gain a lot of performance. It'll be
:10:08. > :10:14.a hive of activity in the pit lane. That is the significant point.
:10:14. > :10:18.Getting into the pits, get those fresh tyres on. And you will gain
:10:18. > :10:22.several seconds over the next few laps because the Pirelli tyres,
:10:23. > :10:29.they add instant grip and that is a key element. They are designed to
:10:29. > :10:33.degrade as well. Whatever tire you put on, you will go faster,
:10:33. > :10:38.especially with a fresh set of soft tyres. If you blink too early, come
:10:38. > :10:43.into early, you might enjoy some undercut but you'll have to stop
:10:43. > :10:50.want extra time later on. Looking down the running order, Michael
:10:50. > :10:54.Schumacher, he is a full 21 seconds behind Sebastian Vettel.
:10:54. > :10:57.Technically, Sebastian Vettel could make a stop in the next lap and
:10:57. > :11:02.still come out in front of Michael Schumacher. That is part of the
:11:02. > :11:09.strategy they must make. It isn't just about what is quickest from
:11:09. > :11:19.where you are. What were when you come out? -- bought were will you
:11:19. > :11:19.
:11:19. > :11:24.come out? There is a very good fight going on. Between Barrichello,
:11:24. > :11:34.Kobayashi, Alguersuari, for 12, 13th and 14th. And that is the
:11:34. > :11:35.
:11:35. > :11:39.battle. They are lapping the mid- 47. 2.5 seconds off the pace. You
:11:39. > :11:44.cannot look at them and say, there's there were, they are still
:11:44. > :11:50.driving as if their lives depend on it. But this looks like it could be
:11:50. > :11:56.an race that has a long battle. And it's about whoever blinks first and
:11:56. > :12:04.hence into the pit lane. Now, the replay, look up at Ferrari ahead.
:12:04. > :12:10.That is Felipe Massa. Getting way too deep. Turn 17, the hairpin. It
:12:10. > :12:16.looked as if that was a moment for Lewis Hamilton to make that pass.
:12:16. > :12:20.But he just held on. The Wall of Death on the outside. Felipe Massa,
:12:20. > :12:30.he maintains 4th place. But he is pulling away back from his team-
:12:30. > :12:34.mate. Fernando Alonso still within that one second zone for DRS. If he
:12:35. > :12:37.could pass Mark Webber, I wonder what he could do about Sebastian
:12:38. > :12:43.Vettel, there could be four seconds behind the leader. You must presume
:12:43. > :12:46.they could catch him. Certainly, he is in that one second and know
:12:46. > :12:52.where you are losing performance, getting the dirty air from Mark
:12:52. > :12:58.Webber. To get that close tells me that there is no question that
:12:58. > :13:03.Ferrari is a quicker package. career there were two men I never
:13:03. > :13:07.wanted catching me. One was Ayrton Senna and the other was Schumacher.
:13:07. > :13:16.If I was driving out, I think it would be Fernando Alonso I would
:13:16. > :13:26.not want. And probably Kobayashi. Toro Rosso cars, busy fighting each
:13:26. > :13:27.
:13:27. > :13:34.other. He has kept his tyres in better for the exit on turnover 20.
:13:34. > :13:38.And they head towards the port. The old fish market. And we have
:13:38. > :13:42.Heidfeld in the pit lane. Barrichello, also, for Williams.
:13:42. > :13:52.Both Toro Rosso cars staying on the track as they head into her lap
:13:52. > :13:55.
:13:55. > :14:00.number 12. Kobayashi is in as well. That looks clean enough. Heidfeld
:14:00. > :14:07.away. Can he clear the Lotus cars? So close to going over that white
:14:07. > :14:12.line. I wonder if he got between those Lotus cars? Part of the
:14:12. > :14:17.decision you must make at the pit wall is to clear the traffic.
:14:17. > :14:27.Presumably, this was an aborted overtake. This is why Paul Lemmy
:14:27. > :14:27.
:14:27. > :14:32.and Alguersuari ended up fighting. -- Sebastien Buemi. Coming back to
:14:32. > :14:36.Nick Heidfeld in the Lotus, he has come out between the other Lotus
:14:36. > :14:40.team-mate and that will cost him as he tries to clear Heikki Kovalainen.
:14:40. > :14:47.He either misjudged that for he misjudged the time to get in and
:14:47. > :14:53.out of the pit stop. I notice Renault in amongst Team Lotus.
:14:53. > :14:58.McLaren coming out. Getting ready in the pit lane. That is for Lewis
:14:58. > :15:05.Hamilton. They are the first of the front-runners to stop and Hamilton
:15:05. > :15:12.does indeed go to the pits. The soft tyres going on. That is
:15:12. > :15:20.whoever and Fernando Alonso. -- Mark Webber. Let's try another
:15:20. > :15:24.set... The pit stop looked good. When that mean that Felipe Massa
:15:24. > :15:29.must respond? Otherwise the undercut, the fresh boots on that
:15:29. > :15:34.car, will give Hamilton such a lot of grip. And the pit exit and the
:15:34. > :15:40.out lap, as it is called, along with on the way in, it is so easy
:15:40. > :15:50.to lose time? You will analyse those laps. Is there anything else
:15:50. > :15:51.
:15:51. > :15:55.tenths in performance from the car. If the driver doesn't get
:15:55. > :16:01.absolutely his in-lap aced or outlap, when you're trying to find
:16:01. > :16:06.out how the tyres are performing, if he's hesitant you can give away
:16:06. > :16:10.a second. That's crucial later in the race. The clock is always
:16:10. > :16:15.running. It doesn't matter whether you're in the pit lane or doing
:16:15. > :16:19.190mph into this braking zone. Vettel leads Webber by 3.5 seconds
:16:19. > :16:25.now. Alonso third. Massa fourth, Button fifth. Hamilton halls pitted.
:16:25. > :16:31.Michael Schumacher stayed out. Nico Rosberg has also pitted. We have,
:16:31. > :16:39.whoa big oversteer. That's a set of rear tyres beginning to cry enough.
:16:39. > :16:46.Heidfeld passed Sutil. So, Sutil having just pitted, Heidfeld sorts
:16:46. > :16:53.him out. Sorry Martin, Red Bull mechanics are in the pit lane.
:16:54. > :17:00.Looks like Ferrari are poilzed as well. Webber in the pits. 40mph the
:17:00. > :17:04.speed here. Webber then on the soft tyres too. Massa didn't come N I
:17:04. > :17:10.had a feeling Massa was going to come in. He didn't. He hasn't
:17:10. > :17:16.responded to Hamilton. Let's look at Hamilton's times: He's done the
:17:16. > :17:21.fastest final set of the Grand Prix. His out lap was 1.50.3. So
:17:21. > :17:26.including getting up to speed in the pit lane, that could put him
:17:26. > :17:30.amongst the Ferraris. Ferrari have not reacted at this time. I would
:17:30. > :17:36.have thought Mclaren would be pretty pleased with that. They
:17:36. > :17:40.might pay a heavier price later, because the tyres have gone further.
:17:40. > :17:47.Ted? Lewis Hamilton's stop on 14, bang on for a three stop. We'd
:17:47. > :17:50.expect him at 28 and 42. The Mclaren guys are readyying tyres.
:17:50. > :17:54.Ferrari feel they haven't reached the cliff with the soft tyres and
:17:54. > :17:57.they can go for five or six more laps. Thank you. What Lewis
:17:57. > :18:01.Hamilton has reached is the back of Michael Schumacher. He's going to
:18:01. > :18:08.breeze past at the end of the straight. Hamilton absolutely
:18:08. > :18:12.flying and he, on these fresh tyres, unsurprisingly. So maybe Ferrari
:18:12. > :18:17.are going to try and do one less stop. But the sort of pace that
:18:17. > :18:22.Hamilton is putting in out there, may change their tune. I think we
:18:22. > :18:26.can see Sebastien Vettel is coming in for his stop. The Red Bull
:18:26. > :18:32.mechanics, Mclaren and Ferrari, it's a pit stop challenge between
:18:32. > :18:38.the three top teams and to add to that, we have Mercedes as well. All
:18:38. > :18:44.of the four teams are servicing their cars. It will be busy down
:18:44. > :18:49.there. Just one pit crew for each team to service both drivers and
:18:49. > :18:53.they have to scarper out of the way with the Jacks. We watch Ferrari
:18:53. > :19:00.get up to speed. Unsurprisingly they're all putting soft tyres.
:19:00. > :19:06.Hamilton with a new fastest lap of the race. Where exactly is he in
:19:06. > :19:10.relaiction to the Ferraris? He's still behind them. Hamilton hasn't
:19:11. > :19:16.made the difference. He's right, he's just coming out of that
:19:16. > :19:24.chicane. Button then just leaving the pits now. He's a long way, lost
:19:24. > :19:27.a lot of time, didn't he? Behind Rosberg early in the race. So
:19:27. > :19:36.Jenson's not been able to catch that up at the moment. Felipe Massa
:19:36. > :19:40.has yet to stop. He leads the Grand Prix. From Vettel, Alonso, Vettel,
:19:40. > :19:47.Webber, Alonso, Hamilton, Button and then Rosberg as well. Jenson
:19:47. > :19:51.then at the end of the bridge. This is Alguersuari and Rosberg and
:19:51. > :19:55.Schumacher charges up the inside. He has a broken front wing. Michael
:19:55. > :19:59.Schumacher has had contact somewhere. That car will understeer
:19:59. > :20:05.horribly through the corners. I wouldn't be going too high speed.
:20:05. > :20:09.He should be called by his team, you cannot go at 190mph - We saw
:20:09. > :20:15.with Heidfeld in Canada. He drove over his front wing. Michael is
:20:15. > :20:20.brave at this stage, trying to get back to the pits. Remarkably he's
:20:20. > :20:24.overtaking a Force India. I saw him years ago driving faster than I
:20:24. > :20:28.could with no front wing and only three wheels on the wagon. The
:20:28. > :20:33.talent is there. Force India outbraked itself to be fair. This
:20:33. > :20:38.is Rosberg and Alguersuari. Rosberg's pitted. Alguersuari has
:20:38. > :20:44.not. He's chasing Rosberg down. Rosberg got Hamilton another new
:20:44. > :20:49.fastest lap and Felipe Massa has now pitted from the lead. He's 20.7
:20:49. > :20:55.seconds it took him in the pit lane, about what we thought his pit stop
:20:55. > :21:01.just 3.7. Then you can see on the graphic, we saw Mclaren practising
:21:01. > :21:08.the other day doing two second, 2.19 was the best pit stop timement
:21:08. > :21:11.Critically, then, Felipe Massa is and Michael literally wearing his
:21:11. > :21:16.front wing now, into the pit. That would have been scary if it tucked
:21:16. > :21:21.under the front wheels. It has tucked under the front left, as can
:21:21. > :21:26.you see. It's moving around as he pulls into the box. Now they have
:21:26. > :21:35.to lift the front of the car up onto a high stand allowing them to
:21:35. > :21:38.remost old wing and then in with the new nose assembly. That
:21:38. > :21:43.effectively puts him out of a point-scoring chance this afternoon
:21:43. > :21:48.I would say. So, it has worked out for Lewis Hamilton in terms of
:21:48. > :21:54.passing one of the Ferraris. He is now ahead of Felipe Massa on the
:21:54. > :22:00.track, some way ahead of him. We see Schumacher coming out of the -
:22:00. > :22:06.oh, no, that's the replay. Michael exits the pits straight into an
:22:06. > :22:11.accident. It looked like he crossed the white line as well coming out
:22:11. > :22:16.of the pits. If he crossed the exit he will get a penalty as well.
:22:16. > :22:24.Maybe that's what unsettled him, is he ran into turn two. Rosberg
:22:24. > :22:30.trying to go around the outside of Alguersuari there. Look at this,
:22:30. > :22:36.Mark Webber looks now the gap down to 2.4 seconds. Though he just had
:22:36. > :22:42.a difficult la -- lap. It was 3.5 when he started the pit stop phase.
:22:42. > :22:48.Button fastest man in the middle part of the lap, so far and doing a
:22:48. > :22:53.1.44.2. Button then is 20 seconds offer the lead. At the top three
:22:53. > :23:01.are covered by less than four seconds. This might explain the
:23:01. > :23:06.slow lap that Webber just had against Hispana. That's through
:23:06. > :23:12.that section 18, 19, 20. That would have cost him a punch of time,
:23:12. > :23:17.showing his frustration. Always fails to surprise me why we can see
:23:17. > :23:20.the guy waving his hands. That's frustration for you. Mark knew he
:23:20. > :23:24.really did get close to Vettel. It's put him back again and almost
:23:24. > :23:34.in the danger zone again with Alonso in terms of that rear wing.
:23:34. > :23:39.That was a costly tangle. That worked out badly for Felipe Massa.
:23:39. > :23:43.He was passed. It was a result of the privilege system. Alonso was
:23:43. > :23:47.the lead driver on the road. He has the privilege of when he comes into
:23:47. > :23:51.the pits. Felipe Massa can't come in before him. That left him
:23:51. > :23:55.vulnerable to Lewis Hamilton as Alonso said no, no, I want to come
:23:55. > :23:59.in later. There was nothing Massa could have done about it.
:23:59. > :24:03.certainly cost him. I wonder why Massa didn't pit straight away.
:24:03. > :24:09.Hamilton, we talked about it, Hamilton came in, fast straight out
:24:09. > :24:14.of the pits. Ferrari didn't respond. As we watch Nick Heidfeld then
:24:14. > :24:21.against Sergio Perez. We're seeing great racing down oh, and contact
:24:21. > :24:25.there. Heidfeld has track position. That was a great move by Heidfeld.
:24:25. > :24:29.Brave stuff going round the outside, because Perez could have pushed him
:24:29. > :24:35.wide. Is he going to lose a further position running down into turn 25?
:24:35. > :24:40.He's got Barrichello and indeed, Barrichello down the inside. Most
:24:40. > :24:45.experienced man in Formula One, showing he knows what to do.
:24:45. > :24:50.hasn't lost any bravery. Perez drops two places in one lap.
:24:50. > :24:55.Heidfeld tenth, Barrichello 11th. Perez is yet to stop. He's trying
:24:55. > :24:58.to play the trick he used very successfully in Australia. Sadly,
:24:58. > :25:02.before they were disqualified from the race and lost their points.
:25:02. > :25:07.There was contact, but Heidfeld didn't give in. He kept his foot
:25:07. > :25:16.buried in the throttle. Then you have got that turn 19 and 20 joined
:25:16. > :25:20.up corner. Webber has the gap down to 2.2 again now. Vettel has
:25:20. > :25:24.responded. I can't help but sense that Vettel is just doing all he
:25:24. > :25:31.has to and nothing more up front. Let's remind ourselves, they could
:25:31. > :25:35.be running on a slightly more preserving the opportunity to use
:25:35. > :25:41.maximum power for when they need it. I'm not sure I would be entirely
:25:41. > :25:45.comfortable with a 2.2 lead, if you make a small mistake you're a bit
:25:45. > :25:50.in trouble. But Mark Webber seems to be in a spot of bother. He was
:25:50. > :25:54.more comfortable after the pit stop. Once again Alonso has closed the
:25:54. > :26:03.gap. It's down to .8 of a second. Mark could well be challenged in
:26:03. > :26:10.the DRS zones. So, that incident with Michael Schumacher and the
:26:10. > :26:14.Renaults, Alonso with a 43.8 and gets himself up behind Mark Webber,
:26:14. > :26:18.look at this, the crowd enjoying that. They've just heard about that
:26:18. > :26:25.new fastest lap. He was definitely within a second of the detection
:26:25. > :26:30.zone. It was just before these two corners. Schumacher under
:26:30. > :26:34.investigation for that contact into the first corner with the Renault.
:26:34. > :26:41.I think it was the Renault of Vitaly Petrov, two drivers who
:26:41. > :26:45.connected with each other in Istanbul as well. A similarly
:26:45. > :26:52.clumsy move, it has to be said. Webber, the gap's up to 2.4 now.
:26:52. > :26:56.It's Vettel's turn to get a Hispana racing car parked on the apex of
:26:56. > :27:01.where he would dearly like to be. When will Vettel pass that car?
:27:01. > :27:06.Blue flags waving. He's hanging on the racing line. He wasn't going to
:27:06. > :27:11.give up the racing line, was he, there? The leader had to go past on
:27:11. > :27:16.the dirty side. Look how close Fernando Alonso is now. We're into
:27:16. > :27:22.lap 19. Vettel leads from Webber. Sorry Martin, that will cost Webber
:27:22. > :27:28.potentially. He's catching him into this last corner. There's no reason
:27:28. > :27:34.for Vitantonio Liuzzi to get out of the way. He does. Every reason.
:27:34. > :27:37.He's making his own race track up down there now. I think he realised
:27:37. > :27:41.that it gave one of the leaders a bit of a hard time. That's often
:27:41. > :27:46.the case. You're coming up to lap people and you're the one that
:27:46. > :27:51.wakes everybody up. They seem a bit more alert after that. You have to
:27:51. > :27:57.be really careful if you're second place, they don't know two cars are
:27:57. > :28:04.coming up them. I always found it quite easy. Maybe that's because I
:28:04. > :28:09.wasn't leading many of them. Mark Webber with his mirrors full of
:28:09. > :28:15.scarlet Ferrari. The Red Bulls are charging, the prancing horse will
:28:15. > :28:25.not let them get away. Finally Alguersuari pits, his first stop of
:28:25. > :28:38.
:28:38. > :28:42.Massa, who is beginning to get some pace again. Then Button sixth. 20
:28:42. > :28:46.seconds off the lead. Rosberg nine seconds behind him. Sutil eighth,
:28:46. > :28:51.having a good run for Force India. Heidfeld ninth. Barrichello tenth
:28:51. > :28:55.and Webber increasingly coming under pressure. This gets really
:28:55. > :29:01.difficult. Not only is he trying to focus on extracting the maximum
:29:01. > :29:07.from these tyres... Rear temperature creeping up. Try one
:29:07. > :29:11.click rearwards, you need more front on entry. Rear temperature,
:29:11. > :29:17.tyre temperatures or brake temperatures creeping up. He says
:29:17. > :29:19.try one click forward. Yeah, that must be brake temperatures. He is
:29:19. > :29:23.under pressure from Fernando Alonso. He's having to drive slightly
:29:23. > :29:27.defensive. It means that you don't explore the braking point as much
:29:27. > :29:31.as you would when you're running alone with the ability to just
:29:31. > :29:37.search out where is the grip, is this car constantly changes. You
:29:37. > :29:41.have the situation where you're burning off 2.5 kilos of fuel each
:29:41. > :29:45.lap. The performance is getting lighter but you play that off
:29:45. > :29:49.against the degradation of the tyre, which is, well, it's getting tired
:29:49. > :29:54.and losing performance. I thought he said one click
:29:55. > :30:01.rearwards. I wondered if it was the differential. There are sensors on
:30:01. > :30:05.the cars reading the surface of the tyre temperatures, tiny infrared
:30:05. > :30:11.things. The teams know exactly what's going on. Look how close
:30:11. > :30:15.Alonso is now. Up the inside, will Webber yield. He has to. Fantastic
:30:15. > :30:21.from Fernando Alonso there, absolutely opportunist and the
:30:21. > :30:31.crowd enjoyed that one! Fernando Alonso almost from nowhere just
:30:31. > :30:34.
:30:34. > :30:39.pounced. The job was done. Now what Prix. Fernando Alonso, really... I
:30:39. > :30:47.think that is still cement dust shaking up the crude macro behind
:30:47. > :30:52.Webber's car. Webber got a little bit wide, as we get a replay, he
:30:52. > :30:57.gets a massive toe down into what is 2010 12. This is the area where
:30:57. > :31:02.Webber went flying last year. A nice clean manoeuvre. Mark does not
:31:02. > :31:08.find it too much. These cells are made dummy, goes left dance which
:31:08. > :31:12.is right. -- the cells in a dummy, goes left and switchers right.
:31:12. > :31:17.Let's explain why there was such a massive toe. A gear these cars to
:31:17. > :31:22.be on the rev limiter in qualifying, when you are able to use DRS
:31:22. > :31:27.everywhere. That means John top gear is long in race trim. Mark
:31:27. > :31:31.Webber is in a situation where he is underpowered. Suddenly, you have
:31:31. > :31:38.Alonso in the slipstream, able to use DRS, able to extract the
:31:38. > :31:42.maximum power from the engine, and that is the end result. There will
:31:42. > :31:47.be no further action on the content between Schumacher and Petrov, we
:31:47. > :31:51.are told. That will be put down to a racing incident, then. No
:31:51. > :32:01.penalties at this time. We still have 24 runners in the Grand Prix
:32:01. > :32:02.
:32:02. > :32:12.Vettel, and I think some parts will have signed on the pit wall at Red
:32:12. > :32:30.
:32:30. > :32:35.lap you do, but the tyres are degrading faster than that. We

:32:41. > :32:47.temperature. It helps the fuel load, when you start to burn fuel. The
:32:47. > :32:51.fuel weight is approximately 150 kilograms, 25% more weight on top
:32:51. > :32:55.of the weight of the car and passenger. It is like two
:32:55. > :33:01.passengers inside the car with the driver, then trying to accelerate
:33:01. > :33:06.them around the racetrack. Vettel leads Alonso by three seconds.
:33:06. > :33:11.Webber is coming back on him. Hamilton is in 4th, 4.5 seconds
:33:11. > :33:16.down the road. Ted Kravitz. Mark Webber had problems with the brakes
:33:16. > :33:20.in qualifying, so that might have reoccurred in the race. His tyres
:33:20. > :33:24.were only a flat sold when Alonso made that pass. Jenson Button is
:33:24. > :33:27.not happy with the set-up and balance of his car, so they have
:33:27. > :33:32.been making tyre pressure adjustments in the garage. Down the
:33:32. > :33:40.field, it looks like Perez's One Stop is not working for him. His
:33:40. > :33:45.lap Tyne's are looking horrible at the moment. -- times. He is on the
:33:45. > :33:49.medium tyre, he will be quicker at the end of the race on the soft.
:33:49. > :33:54.You are right, Perez is five seconds off the pace at the moment.
:33:54. > :33:58.That looks like a strategy that is not working. You only need to do
:33:58. > :34:04.four laps like that and you have got a free pit-stop to put fresh
:34:04. > :34:09.tyres on. That does not look too handy. He is down in 14th place. He
:34:10. > :34:15.is the only driver who has not pitied during the Grand Prix. 24
:34:15. > :34:20.runners. David, in parc ferme conditions, we used to call the
:34:20. > :34:24.cars apart after every session, go out and do a warm-up, a call them
:34:24. > :34:28.apart again, then go and do the race. We had so much reliability
:34:28. > :34:33.despite that. Now they cannot do any of that, but we have incredible
:34:33. > :34:38.reliability. The technology moves forward. A lot of it has been
:34:38. > :34:43.helped... Lewis, we are doing the same pace. We need to keep going a
:34:43. > :34:47.little bit longer on this set. Interestingly, looking behind
:34:47. > :34:53.instead of forward, I wonder if they are resigned to the fact that
:34:53. > :35:03.Ford may be the best Lewis can get today. At point. Webber has done a
:35:03. > :35:07.1:43.5, Hamilton is doing 1:45.5. Button, 45.6. Lewis is struggling
:35:07. > :35:12.on these tyres. Maybe he put them to heart out of the pits, as we
:35:12. > :35:16.watch Petrov making his way past Kobayashi. The Saubers have
:35:16. > :35:21.struggled this weekend. I think it is the lower downforce required.
:35:21. > :35:26.There are low downforce package, it is all relative, but it is not that
:35:26. > :35:29.effective, it seems to me. It looks like there is a bit of a lull, I
:35:29. > :35:32.will finish the sentence I started earlier and reliability. It has
:35:32. > :35:37.been helped by the fact that you have one gearbox for five races and
:35:37. > :35:42.you are limited in the manner of engines for the season. The rpm is
:35:42. > :35:46.capped at 18,000. We were doing over 20,000 at one point. When you
:35:46. > :35:50.are pushing those boundaries, there is a massive stress, and an
:35:50. > :35:54.liability. For the engine manufacturers to come back to
:35:54. > :35:58.18,000, it gives them such head room. They do not learn what they
:35:58. > :36:04.learned when they had to read it to 20,000. We can see McLaren
:36:04. > :36:11.preparing for Lewis Hamilton. not run out of breaks any more, we
:36:11. > :36:16.do not have clutch failure, drive shaft failure. -- brakes. The cars
:36:16. > :36:21.are pretty bulletproof these days. Look how slow this is going to feel
:36:21. > :36:26.as Hamilton chugs down the pit-lane in the finest racing car in the
:36:26. > :36:29.world, limited to 40 mph. Another set of soft tyres going on for
:36:29. > :36:37.Lewis Hamilton. He will have to stop once more. What was going on
:36:37. > :36:42.there? Away too early, obviously a sign from the chief mechanic there.
:36:42. > :36:45.We will get a replay of that, hopefully. 4.4 for the stop, but
:36:45. > :36:53.they have wonder if that includes the hesitation after it was nearly
:36:53. > :36:59.over. Not a good phase of the Grand Prix for Lewis Hamilton. We are on
:36:59. > :37:03.board with Petrov now, who is looking to get past Perez. Erez has
:37:04. > :37:09.not faded, his tyres must be feeling pretty second-hand by now.
:37:09. > :37:15.-- Perez has not pitied. He does not take a run around the outside.
:37:15. > :37:25.He has got Kobayashi chasing him as well. This is over 14th, 15th and
:37:25. > :37:27.
:37:27. > :37:33.through turn one. He must be in dire trouble with these tyres.
:37:33. > :37:40.is still five seconds per lap off the pace. Petrov was not putting
:37:40. > :37:44.his car and the optimum position for an overtake. That is an easy
:37:44. > :37:49.corner, turn one. He would not be expecting Erez to lift out. You
:37:49. > :37:54.could see the Rehan movement of the car as he went through the turn. He
:37:54. > :38:04.did a remarkable job to keep it on the track. And Nick Heidfeld are in
:38:04. > :38:07.
:38:07. > :38:14.Sebastian Vettel on lap 26. He leaves, and easy overtake now for
:38:14. > :38:18.Petrov. He has wasted their lap on that one. He had the help of DRS
:38:18. > :38:28.there. It works for the way through the field, whether you are lapping,
:38:28. > :38:29.
:38:29. > :38:35.being lapdog Justin combat. Vettel leads by 3.2. -- being laughed walk
:38:35. > :38:40.just in combat. Button is beginning... He is in 5th, he is
:38:40. > :38:46.ahead of Hamilton now that Hamilton has made his second stop. Kobayashi
:38:46. > :38:51.passes his team-mate for 15th position. Surely Sauber are
:38:51. > :38:55.thinking, surely the same as we are, this is not working. Every 4th time
:38:56. > :39:00.he goes past the pits, he has wasted a pit-stop. What is the
:39:00. > :39:05.point? Well, I am trying to look down the pit-lane. They are going
:39:05. > :39:09.to bring him in. That was at least a couple of laps too late. They
:39:09. > :39:14.were living in Melbourne mode, when it seemed to work, he only did one
:39:14. > :39:16.stop there. This was the overtake from Petrov. He gets well out of
:39:16. > :39:22.the way, he does not make that difficult at all, the sensible
:39:22. > :39:26.thing. And then Kobayashi doing the same thing with the benefit of DRS.
:39:26. > :39:29.It is all very happy at there in the midfield, waving thank-you to
:39:29. > :39:34.reach other. I would have thought he would have been quite upset with
:39:34. > :39:42.him. Michael Schumacher and Maldonado, wheel-to-wheel. That is
:39:42. > :39:46.for 16th place, which Schumacher takes. Do not find yourself, when
:39:46. > :39:53.you see Michael up close and personal life that, going, is this
:39:53. > :39:57.going to be another contact?! was close. He was a demon in Canada
:39:57. > :40:02.two weeks ago, he was the one doing the double over take out of turn
:40:02. > :40:08.nine, coping with the conditions in the old style. It is just not moist
:40:08. > :40:14.enough for him out there. They are managing to cross all of the water
:40:14. > :40:19.and around the port. Hamilton does the new fastest lap of the race,
:40:19. > :40:22.43.1. Maybe that is not so smart, to take so much life out of the
:40:22. > :40:27.tyres so early. Pirelli say you have to treat them carefully in the
:40:27. > :40:31.beginning. You say that, but it is only six tenths quicker than the
:40:31. > :40:37.previous lap from Vettel. He may well feel, with that extra
:40:37. > :40:41.performance from these fresh tyres, once they hit the wall, they really
:40:41. > :40:47.drop off in performance. If he was at the end of that previous set,
:40:47. > :40:51.maybe he feels he is comfortably doing this lap time. We will find
:40:51. > :40:56.out. He has certainly burned out the fastest, the first of the
:40:56. > :41:00.front-runners to have to pit tries. Ted. Still at McLaren, just a
:41:00. > :41:04.thought. We know that Jenson is trying a different strategy to
:41:04. > :41:09.Lewis Hamilton. Jenson Button is going longer to try to make a small
:41:09. > :41:12.third stint. Whether he is doing two of three, we will find out. If
:41:12. > :41:18.Lewis continues like this, he will come up behind his team-mate, and
:41:18. > :41:22.then McLaren will have a little problem. He could well do. The last
:41:22. > :41:27.thing McLaren will want to do is leave Jenson out holding a Lewis if
:41:27. > :41:33.he has fresh tyres. Interesting team decision to be made in about...
:41:33. > :41:38.Let's look at the Gatt, 7.9 seconds between Hamilton and Button. We
:41:38. > :41:43.have a difference of 1.2 seconds per lap. Do you think Ferrari have
:41:43. > :41:48.a chance to win this race? What you think Vettel is just coasting and
:41:48. > :41:51.doing all he needs to do? I am glad you mentioned that, because with
:41:51. > :41:55.only a 3.2 seconds gap, there is a lot of racing to be done. The key
:41:55. > :41:59.thing that Sebastian Vettel has on his side is that Ferrari are very
:41:59. > :42:04.unhappy, or were very unhappy on the prime tyre, the harder tyre.
:42:04. > :42:10.They're going well at the moment on the option, matching Red Bull,
:42:10. > :42:14.slightly quicker on that previous lap. Lewis, you have set a purple
:42:14. > :42:18.lap, you are the fastest car. Please look after these tyres and
:42:18. > :42:25.manage your pace. The engineers thinking exactly the same that we
:42:25. > :42:31.were thinking up here. You can take the grip early on, but it is not
:42:31. > :42:36.going to be there later when you really need it. Andy Latham there
:42:36. > :42:41.telling Lewis, OK, just can't let a little bit. We love your attacking
:42:41. > :42:46.style, but you might be taking a bit too much out of those tyres.
:42:46. > :42:51.Five. To stop there for Heidfeld. In the pits, we have just had
:42:51. > :42:57.Heidfeld, Di Resta, Petrov. That was their second stop. Most of them
:42:57. > :43:03.will be doing a three-stop race this afternoon. And Webber, then,
:43:03. > :43:07.goes into the pit lane. He was getting very close behind Alonso,
:43:07. > :43:12.so Webber pits first. Will this give in he and a cat? That could
:43:13. > :43:18.put a lot of pressure on Ferrari, and it would take the pressure off
:43:18. > :43:22.Vettel up front. This is a key pit stop for Red Bull. Holding the rest
:43:22. > :43:29.evenly so the car does not rock on the jacks, otherwise they cannot
:43:30. > :43:37.get the guns nicely on to the spin of. 3.7, for Red Bull. Now Ferrari
:43:37. > :43:41.have got a decision to make. Are they go into have to? Definitely a
:43:41. > :43:45.three-stop for Webber. They went into qualifying with three sets of
:43:45. > :43:49.each of the tyre compounds. In a dry race, they must use both of
:43:49. > :43:54.them. If you are new to Formula One, we will remind you about that. It
:43:54. > :44:01.is a question are having to get out on both tyres at some point. They
:44:01. > :44:07.want to use these lower tyre, up to two seconds per lap slower,
:44:07. > :44:13.depending on which team you are talking to. Alonso looks so steady.
:44:13. > :44:18.In fact, that looks very steady to me. Let's have a look at his sector
:44:18. > :44:23.times. First sector was OK, struggling for grip. He will have
:44:23. > :44:28.to pit, surely, the will have to respond. There is a bunch of
:44:29. > :44:33.traffic, Vettel coming up behind Petrov, Karthikeyan. Is that
:44:33. > :44:38.Maldonado there as well? A bunch of traffic which Alonso does not want
:44:38. > :44:43.to lose time in. The Ferrari mechanics are in the pit lane.
:44:43. > :44:48.Options are being brought out for Fernando Alonso. Some over steering
:44:48. > :44:51.into the pit lane, he has got no real grip left. He has hit the
:44:51. > :44:56.cliff that we have heard the drivers talking about. It is an
:44:56. > :45:02.early warning system. You have run out of rubber compound on your rear
:45:02. > :45:07.tyres, and Alonso was really struggling on at in lap. Where is
:45:07. > :45:13.Webber? Massa goes through. It is going to be close. He is going to
:45:13. > :45:18.pass him. That is the undercut for you. He pitted one lap earlier, had
:45:18. > :45:28.the extra grip. He was just over one second behind him as we got to
:45:28. > :45:35.
:45:35. > :45:39.Maldonado preparing to come from They've blinked first and got it
:45:39. > :45:43.right at the moment. Great stuff from Red Bull strategy. Now
:45:43. > :45:47.Fernando Alonso has got to do it all again. That turns the tables.
:45:47. > :45:51.That puts Red Bull back in charge for now. It does. One thing I think
:45:51. > :45:58.I didn't finish earlier was saying that Ferrari have been struggling
:45:58. > :46:06.on the harder tyres. Once they have to put that on, they might...
:46:06. > :46:11.rear tyre temperatures are very hot. I can't go any slower. Understood.
:46:11. > :46:16.I can't go any slower! We both know that's not the case. He can park it
:46:16. > :46:20.up if he fancies. Thlz a clear message to his engineer. Please
:46:20. > :46:24.stop talking to me. I'm frustrated, I'm trying to drive this car
:46:24. > :46:30.quickly and I can't make the tyres last. That could be an indication
:46:30. > :46:34.of a lack of downforce, cars sliding around. Massa ahead of
:46:34. > :46:38.Webber and Alonso at the moment. Vettel pits. Red Bull don't have a
:46:38. > :46:42.luxury this afternoon of coasting in when it suits them. They have to
:46:42. > :46:47.keep reacting to Ferrari. Jenson is in the pits as well. Another set of
:46:47. > :46:52.the soft tyres going on, to confirm they will stop again. Both Red Bull
:46:52. > :46:59.and at least Alonso have to stop. So Massa leads the Grand Prix, but
:46:59. > :47:03.he's yet to do his second stop. Massa didn't quite lead the Grand
:47:03. > :47:09.Prix. He didn't get through. What's going to be interesting,
:47:09. > :47:13.Massa could come into play with Webber, if Ferrari want to play
:47:13. > :47:18.strategic, they would leave Massa out for another lap. OK he's going
:47:18. > :47:22.to be fourth, let's use him to back Webber into Alonso. Well, you've
:47:22. > :47:32.got to be cruel to be kind to the team, I guess. You have Webber in
:47:32. > :47:36.the 1.42. Alonso is flying as well out there. They like the new tyres.
:47:36. > :47:41.Button finishes his second stop, gets back up to speed. Rosberg has
:47:41. > :47:47.been in too. He looks as if he can keep the Mercedes inside the top
:47:47. > :47:51.ten. We do have a race on our hands. Vettel leads from Massa, Webber,
:47:51. > :47:55.Alonso. Massa yet to stop. He's kind of 20 seconds out of bed there
:47:55. > :47:59.really in that respect. But you're right, David, he can really spoil
:47:59. > :48:04.it. He's now struggling for rear grip as well. I don't think Webber
:48:04. > :48:10.will be behind him very long. has his DRS open. It will be a key
:48:10. > :48:15.moment to pop it down the inside to turn 17. Massa goes defensive. He
:48:15. > :48:24.was so much slower on the brakes, Webber with a fantastic pass. Now
:48:24. > :48:29.Massa is holding up Fernando Alonso. He is indeed. Look at the gap
:48:29. > :48:33.that's giving Webber up front. Oh, has he seen him? How do they find
:48:33. > :48:38.time to make hand signals when they're trying not to have 180mph
:48:38. > :48:42.accident? Massa pits. He had to then. He had run out of rear tyre
:48:42. > :48:49.grip. Candy from a baby as Webber drove clean around the outside of
:48:49. > :48:55.him. Vettel then, the top three are covered now by 3.1 seconds, a set
:48:55. > :49:04.of used soft tyres and a very long pit stop indeed. Left rear didn't
:49:04. > :49:07.go on properly. So that does, look at that, 8.6 seconds for Felipe
:49:07. > :49:12.Massa. Could be very good news for Jenson Button who's just coming
:49:12. > :49:18.into the background there. So Button much closer to Massa now.
:49:18. > :49:22.But he's finished his second stop. He's 29 seconds off the lead Jenson.
:49:22. > :49:25.He was around 20. But he doesn't have the pace at the moment.
:49:25. > :49:33.Hamilton 13 seconds off the lead in fourth place. Mclaren are burning
:49:33. > :49:42.up their tyres faster than Red Bull and Ferrari. There then is the
:49:42. > :49:47.guilty wheelgun. Good drive from Mark Webber. He's coming back. He
:49:48. > :49:52.was struggling at the beginning of the Grand Prix. Typical that you
:49:52. > :49:55.don't give up. He's going to get himself into a comfortable position
:49:55. > :50:00.against Sebastien Vettel. This is what he needs to do if he's going
:50:00. > :50:04.to lead the first lap this season. Remarkably he's not led one. He
:50:04. > :50:07.needs to win a Grand Prix soon if he's going to come back into this
:50:07. > :50:13.challenge. They're having to be so careful on the throttle. You can
:50:13. > :50:16.hear that. Compared to qualifying they're doing seven, eight seconds
:50:16. > :50:21.slower. They're coaxing the throttle into play, aren't they?
:50:21. > :50:27.Track temperatures 47 degrees, the chemical reaction that's going on,
:50:27. > :50:31.Jenson Button locking up, running wide in turn 17. Then into this
:50:31. > :50:36.fantastic sequence through 18, 19, 20, should be flat through the last
:50:36. > :50:43.part there. Then this run down through 22, 23 and into the last
:50:43. > :50:49.section. Completely flat, uses all the kerb and then straightens it up
:50:49. > :50:53.KERS is not working. Something about KERS, wasn't it?
:50:53. > :50:57.KERS is not working. That's not going to help his lap time that.
:50:57. > :51:03.Will cost him three, four tenths. The winner two weeks ago is really
:51:03. > :51:08.struggling today. He's in sixth at the moment. Just 1.7 seconds behind
:51:08. > :51:14.Felipe Massa. Now he's carrying 40 kilos of gubins an it's not giving
:51:14. > :51:18.him extra power. The powers are ballasted up to weigh the same.
:51:18. > :51:24.It's not ideal weight. Put it lower if you could and spread it around
:51:24. > :51:31.the car, he's carrying the system and it's not giving him any
:51:31. > :51:35.powerment Simply put he's minus 80 horse power. Vettel leads on lap 33
:51:35. > :51:39.on 1.8 seconds. Here's a replay of that tardy pit stop for the Ferrari
:51:39. > :51:44.team. They're looking for another gun.
:51:44. > :51:50.They had to get the spare gun in on the action. A shake of the head
:51:50. > :51:54.from Felipe Massa. Look at that, the wheel nut struggling get that
:51:54. > :52:00.out. They're fearsome things. We did a competition with Jenson and
:52:00. > :52:04.Lewis, the guns feel like they'll break your risk. Top three in the
:52:04. > :52:13.short pit straight. They've lapped Michael Schumacher. Of course he
:52:13. > :52:17.came in are with -- with a broken front wing earlier. He's not had
:52:17. > :52:20.great pace. Mercedes struggling with rear tyre degradation. Rosberg
:52:20. > :52:24.in eighth place. But Michael Schumacher is in 17th and Ted has
:52:25. > :52:29.news on that. Everything is overheating down here in Valencia.
:52:29. > :52:33.Certainly Red Bull's looking good, but Button's KERS has overheated.
:52:33. > :52:38.Red Bull's tyres are the only one that's seem to be in good shape in
:52:38. > :52:41.the hands of Sebastien Vettel. He's the only one in good shape. With
:52:41. > :52:46.the hotter track temperatures, tyre degradation has been much higher
:52:46. > :52:50.than the engineers expected. What this means is that this race will
:52:50. > :52:53.be won by whoever can make the harder tyre work best in the final
:52:53. > :52:57.stint. A quick one on Michael Schumacher. He's made a third pit
:52:57. > :53:01.stop. He's run out of soft tyres. He's on the harder tyre. Thanks for
:53:01. > :53:05.that, Ted. Alguersuari is doing a great job in seventh place.
:53:05. > :53:10.Remember, when he was fighting with Rosberg and Rosberg was on fresh
:53:10. > :53:15.tyres. Now he's ahead of Rosberg by 2.9 seconds. He's only stopped once.
:53:15. > :53:19.He's in the 1.44. That's looking very handy indeed for Alguersuari
:53:19. > :53:23.in the Toro Rosso. It seems as if he's found a sweet spot in his set
:53:23. > :53:27.up. He needed to. He's been under pressure in Toro Rosso. He's not
:53:27. > :53:31.been extracting as much from the car as Buemi. He's responding here
:53:31. > :53:39.to the home crowd. He lives in Barcelona. He considers this almost
:53:39. > :53:46.a home race. This is aee-haw section. I love it. -- yee-haw
:53:46. > :53:51.section. I love it. That last corner is tremendous. It gets your
:53:51. > :53:58.adrenaline pumping, skimming the walls at 195mph. Vettel, 142.4. The
:53:58. > :54:02.gap is two seconds to Webber. He's 1.5 ahead of Alonso. 3.6 seconds
:54:02. > :54:09.covers the top three then a 14- second wait for Lewis Hamilton,
:54:09. > :54:14.make that nearly 16 seconds now. Ted's at Mclaren. Something is up.
:54:15. > :54:17.All the mechanics are coming into the garage. They're getting out
:54:17. > :54:22.their marigolds. They've been warned that Jenson Button has a
:54:22. > :54:25.problem with his KERS. If he needs to retire, the mechanics have been
:54:25. > :54:28.told get out your electric protection gloves because there's
:54:28. > :54:33.something wrong. I hope they don't have to retire Jenson Button, but
:54:33. > :54:37.it doesn't look good. The KERS could be overheating or shorting
:54:37. > :54:41.out somewhere presumably. Normally it's a very reliable system. It's
:54:41. > :54:47.one of the best out there. It was developed with Mercedes-Benz.
:54:48. > :54:51.Hamilton doing 1.44. Button has just done his fastest lap of the
:54:51. > :54:56.Grand Prix. Whatever the problem is doesn't need gloves, spanners,
:54:56. > :54:59.hammers or anything at the momentment -- moment. There's
:54:59. > :55:04.Vettel, Webber, Alonso, the front runners.
:55:04. > :55:07.Alonso won't give up, as ever. We've seen him running wide and
:55:07. > :55:13.struggling to keep the Ferrari exactly where he wants it on track.
:55:13. > :55:21.But he's keeping the Red Bulls very honest indeed. They come into the
:55:21. > :55:30.back of the buildings there. Let's look at the gap now.
:55:30. > :55:38.Vettel crosses the line, into lap 36. He is 2.1 clear of Webber,
:55:38. > :55:42.who's 1.6 clear of Alonso. It's Hamilton again struggling.
:55:42. > :55:47.that's reasonable pace, reasonable pace. We're about a second faster
:55:47. > :55:55.than Hamilton at this point, a second faster than Hamilton. Lewis
:55:55. > :56:00.has just done a 145.2 now. Again those rear tyres... They've given
:56:00. > :56:04.up. Yeah he's gone off the wall. What a fantastic battle. The top
:56:04. > :56:08.three separated by less than a tenth on the last lap. This is a
:56:08. > :56:13.real battle of the pressure they have to deliver consistent lap
:56:13. > :56:17.times on a track where your car is constantly changing. Your fuel
:56:17. > :56:22.levels are getting down to sensible levels. The tyres are desperately
:56:22. > :56:26.losing their performance. You go on board with Felipe Massa, I have a
:56:26. > :56:29.feeling that Ferrari will be the last to pit here. If the rumour is
:56:29. > :56:34.true that they can make the prime work, they're not going to get any
:56:34. > :56:37.better than third place if they come in first, for the pit stop
:56:37. > :56:41.that is. They were at sea when those tyres were going off. They
:56:41. > :56:46.were losing so much time. They could barely keep the thing on the
:56:46. > :56:50.track coming into the pit lane. This is all about who can make that
:56:50. > :56:54.medium tyre, that they've now all got to run, to the end of the Grand
:56:54. > :56:57.Prix, at the next pit stop. It's the first time that tyre has run.
:56:57. > :57:01.It's in the a different construction. It's just a different
:57:01. > :57:04.compound. First time this year. It's a question of who can make
:57:04. > :57:08.that work best amongst these three as to who will win the Grand Prix.
:57:08. > :57:14.Red Bull looked as if they were making it work better than Ferrari
:57:14. > :57:18.in terms of switching the tyre on. Explain what switching those medium
:57:18. > :57:21.tyres on means. Typically, it's been that the slower tyre of the
:57:21. > :57:25.two tyres they've got here. I prefer to call them prime and
:57:25. > :57:29.option because I think it gets confusing when we get into the
:57:29. > :57:34.compounds. But the prime tyre, the harder of the two tyres, has been
:57:34. > :57:36.over a second a lap slower from new than the option. They've had more
:57:36. > :57:40.difficulty getting that performance out of it on the first timed laps.
:57:40. > :57:46.It's been taking two, three laps to deliver. Typically, there's going
:57:46. > :57:49.to be a crossover point probably lap 15, 16, when the option tyre
:57:49. > :57:54.suddenly starts to lose performance and they'll be doing the same lap
:57:54. > :57:58.time as a new prime. That becomes a strategic decision for the driver
:57:58. > :58:01.and team to decide how many more laps to do on the option. I should
:58:01. > :58:09.correct myself, Ferrari could still get the advantage from doing the
:58:09. > :58:14.undercut by coming in early, but they would have then be on the
:58:14. > :58:20.harder tyre. Let's hope they do that. We could see an almighty race
:58:20. > :58:24.then as Red Bull respond. Michael Schumacher. Six more lap was this
:58:24. > :58:31.tyre. Keep pushing like this. Unusual amount of information to
:58:31. > :58:36.give away there on the radios. He's fighting with Rosberg in eighth. 24
:58:36. > :58:40.seconds behind Jenson Button, so Alguersuari in seventh. He's got a
:58:40. > :58:44.fight on his hands with Rosberg, Sutil, Heidfeld and Di Resta. Di
:58:44. > :58:54.Resta threatening to get in the points as well. He's in 11th at the
:58:54. > :59:01.
:59:01. > :59:06.moment, as Alonso seems to get ever now only 1.3 behind Webber. It's
:59:06. > :59:10.really a question of who puts those tyres on first and how they operate
:59:10. > :59:14.when they get them on. That's terrible driving from the HRT there,
:59:14. > :59:17.waiting until the car was almost on top of it before allowing it to
:59:18. > :59:22.pass. Look at the Ferrari as well. I'd be surprised if the stewards
:59:22. > :59:32.don't talk to him. You're being lapped, you have to get out of the
:59:32. > :59:35.
:59:35. > :59:39.way. Yeah, that was Liuzzi again, wasn't it? It was Liuzzi, yeah.
:59:39. > :59:44.Vettel then, just hanging on somehow. It's good to see the
:59:44. > :59:49.Ferraris have kept Red Bull very honest indeed this afternoon. Will
:59:49. > :59:55.we get surprises before the end of the Grand Prix? Top ten remain,
:59:55. > :00:05.Vettel, Webber, Alonso, Hamilton, Massa, Button, Alguersuari, Rosberg,
:00:05. > :00:10.
:00:10. > :00:14.times on his two-stop strategy. Let's see if that works out for
:00:14. > :00:18.more points. Two weeks ago in Canada, he started from the pit
:00:18. > :00:22.lane and came through to V8. It is interesting to note that Red Bull
:00:22. > :00:31.have only had one race where they got a one-two finish, back in
:00:31. > :00:35.Turkey. But Vettel has led, before this race started, 80% of every
:00:35. > :00:40.race in lap this year. Of course, that percentage just goes up and up
:00:40. > :00:45.and up as he charges around here. Mark set in Canada, you make your
:00:45. > :00:51.own luck, but he is being hard in insult. He has been unlucky with
:00:51. > :00:54.reliability issues. We joined the battle with Rosberg. Rosberg is
:00:54. > :01:00.homing in on Alguersuari, whose tyres must be feeling pretty
:01:00. > :01:08.second-hand by now. Rosberg and usually have thing to make an
:01:08. > :01:12.additional downshift on the apex of turn 14. -- and usually. He lost
:01:12. > :01:17.some of the gains that he had made. I did 17 laps and a Formula One car
:01:17. > :01:21.last week for a feature on the Pirelli tyres, and these engines
:01:21. > :01:25.have no talk. You have to keep coming down the gears. They would
:01:25. > :01:30.not pull the skin of a rice pudding. They are good at the top end, near
:01:30. > :01:35.18,000 revs, but once you fall out of that band, they just will not
:01:35. > :01:40.pull. It is all relative, they still get up and go a bit, but it
:01:40. > :01:45.felt pretty gutless, I thought. horses available, around that
:01:46. > :01:52.amount. But it was underwhelming to drive the 2.4 V8 at the end of my
:01:52. > :01:57.career, no talk. Compared to the braking, which is mind-blowing the
:01:57. > :02:01.good, I have to say. Ted has news. The Red Bull carriage is looking
:02:01. > :02:06.very happy. It has underlined how miserable they look at McLaren.
:02:06. > :02:09.Jenson Button's car looks OK. They are all wearing the electrical
:02:09. > :02:13.protection rubber gloves because he still has to make a pit stop, and
:02:13. > :02:18.they are not sure whether the car has residual life and it is the
:02:18. > :02:21.attached to it. That is why they are wearing them. But they are not
:02:21. > :02:26.looking at retiring him. They will be more concerned that Lewis
:02:26. > :02:36.Hamilton is 26 seconds off the pace. Yes, it has not been a great
:02:36. > :02:43.
:02:43. > :02:48.young Spaniard, driving beautifully in front of them. 85,000 in the
:02:48. > :02:52.crowd. Has Rosberg got it now? Can you hang on around the outside?
:02:52. > :03:00.Alguersuari managing to get another attraction as they charge side-by-
:03:00. > :03:06.side into the braking zone. Job done for Nico Rosberg in to turn 17,
:03:06. > :03:12.the hairpin. So Rosberg up to seventh place, then, with that.
:03:12. > :03:17.Presumably, Alguersuari is running out of tyres. Vettel has done a
:03:17. > :03:21.1:41.9. I cannot help but feel he is just plain games at the front.
:03:21. > :03:25.As we said earlier, he could be running in a more conservative
:03:25. > :03:30.engine mode, controlling the gap. I daresay he is more comfortable,
:03:30. > :03:36.having his team-mate behind him, and if that were Fernando Alonso.
:03:36. > :03:39.It was looking good for Mark for a while. He was able to close up to
:03:39. > :03:44.Sebastian, but he has got his mirrors full of Fernando Alonso, as
:03:44. > :03:54.we go on board with Hamilton. need to try to up our pace again
:03:54. > :03:57.
:03:58. > :04:01.for the next few laps. This is as but now the tyres have degraded
:04:01. > :04:06.more, he cannot go any faster. And the reason why they are getting
:04:06. > :04:11.jumpy about that is because Felipe Massa is closing in at over one
:04:11. > :04:15.second per lap on them now, aiming at fourth place. This is intriguing.
:04:15. > :04:20.What has happened to the McLaren Res pace? They were looking like
:04:20. > :04:24.the nearest challenger to Red Bull. In terms of underline pace, they
:04:24. > :04:28.were quicker is that the last three Grands Prix. There are eight
:04:28. > :04:32.traction zones at the second. Those high-speed corners, you're not
:04:32. > :04:36.pulling a lot of lateral, you are not sliding across the track at
:04:36. > :04:41.high speeds, so it is all about keeping the rear tyres end, I would
:04:41. > :04:45.say. That is the big difference. Silverstone is going to pose a new
:04:45. > :04:49.challenge, a lot of high-speed corners, possibly one of the
:04:49. > :04:53.fastest sections of any Grand Prix track at Becketts. I recommend
:04:53. > :04:59.anyone who goes, go and hang out and watch the cars at high speed.
:04:59. > :05:04.It is very much a case of point and squirt around this street circuit.
:05:04. > :05:10.Felipe Massa still catching Button at over one second by lap. We are
:05:10. > :05:20.on board with Button now. Can we see any dramas? Yes, this pace is
:05:20. > :05:22.
:05:22. > :05:25.OK. Without KERS, we need to stay tyre, they expect that gap to be
:05:25. > :05:30.over one second in performance. Although they will start to get
:05:30. > :05:34.high degradation on the option tyres, it still seems to be that
:05:34. > :05:38.you are going to get a faster lap time the longer you can stay on
:05:38. > :05:42.these. Once they are on the prime tyre at the end of the Grand Prix,
:05:42. > :05:50.they are not going to go any quicker. Schumacher is not doing
:05:50. > :05:55.too bad a job. He is on those tyres now. He is doing a 1:45.2, Rosberg
:05:55. > :06:05.is 43.9, so about the 1.3 that we were told they are slow. A lot of
:06:05. > :06:06.
:06:06. > :06:13.marbles of the outside of the key dejected Lewis Hamilton in there,
:06:13. > :06:19.especially if Felipe Massa catches him. The gap was 5.2 seconds. It is
:06:19. > :06:23.now 4.8 that he is ahead of fifth- placed Felipe Massa. Vettel just
:06:23. > :06:28.picking up his pace. What can Vettel do in that cockpit that the
:06:28. > :06:31.others can't? How can he go that fast and not use his tyres up?
:06:31. > :06:36.is the one million dollar question. It is down to the difference in
:06:36. > :06:40.preference between drivers. For whatever reason, Mark Webber's
:06:40. > :06:43.style, if you do a direct comparison, the only comparison you
:06:43. > :06:47.can really make is between the team-mates striving nominally the
:06:47. > :06:52.same cars, and he just seems to be able to position the weight of the
:06:53. > :06:57.car equally between the four tyres. The others seem to be taking that
:06:57. > :07:01.bit more out of the rear tyres. Once you start to lose the rear
:07:01. > :07:07.axle, it affects your braking, traction, and lap time goes down
:07:08. > :07:12.accordingly. Vettel was one of the smartest drivers have there, and I
:07:12. > :07:17.think his stint management on each of the tyres is as good as
:07:17. > :07:22.anybody's now. He knows how to apply the throttle and the steering
:07:22. > :07:26.over a full stint, as Mark Webber comes in, then. Now we are going to
:07:26. > :07:33.see the final phase of pit stops. My Clarence out as well, Martin.
:07:33. > :07:36.They are in the pit lane as well. - - McLaren. Lewis Hamilton in on
:07:36. > :07:41.this lap, we are hearing. An important stop, that looked good
:07:41. > :07:48.enough. Now we will see how these medium compound works. A bit of
:07:48. > :07:52.traffic for Webber. 3.6, the stop, not too bad. It is all about
:07:52. > :08:02.getting on it on the out lap. Webber exits the pits as Lewis
:08:02. > :08:04.
:08:04. > :08:09.they saved from qualifying is going to go on that car. There we go.
:08:09. > :08:13.figures come back to Webber, he has come out behind Petrov and
:08:13. > :08:18.Barrichello... And Barrichello, who are battling for position. That
:08:18. > :08:23.could be costly, if he is not able to run a clean lap and extract the
:08:23. > :08:28.maximum from those prime tyres. could put Alonso on him, you might
:08:28. > :08:34.be right. That is Hamilton's Third Stock of the afternoon. He is
:08:34. > :08:38.fighting Massa for 4th and 5th. Let's keeps a close eye on his
:08:38. > :08:43.sector times. This is the traffic you were talking about. Mark uses a
:08:43. > :08:49.lot less of the racetrack than Sebastian Vettel. That was Webber
:08:49. > :08:53.getting out of shape heading for the pit lane. They knew he was in
:08:53. > :08:58.her Formula One that lap, but the really got wound up through there.
:08:58. > :09:01.We were talking about that earlier. You have got to maximise your in
:09:01. > :09:05.lap and your out lap. You cannot leave anything behind, because it
:09:05. > :09:10.will be critical when you rejoin the track. Alonso is now in clean
:09:10. > :09:15.air, and he has done his fastest middle sector. He is only two
:09:15. > :09:20.tenths slower than Sebastian Vettel's last lap. It is key to see
:09:20. > :09:27.what he can deliver now. Webber has not done a personal best to either
:09:27. > :09:31.of of the first two sectors of the out lap. Webber, then, does a 54.5,
:09:31. > :09:36.including the pit stop. He is dropping back. The traffic is not
:09:36. > :09:42.holding him up at all. He looks to have a problem. He was close to
:09:42. > :09:47.them when he left the pit lane, but look at the gap now. His first
:09:47. > :09:51.sector time, we won and get a complete flying lap from in to save.
:09:51. > :09:55.The other drivers have got the advantage. It is a nervy wait to
:09:55. > :09:59.see whether he will undercut them, or whether they can actually hold
:09:59. > :10:05.on a little bit longer. If he cannot get those working, dialled
:10:05. > :10:09.into the race track, 27.2 for the first sector, three tenths slower
:10:09. > :10:13.than his team-mate. That is telling you that they do not need to pit in
:10:13. > :10:18.yet. It looks like he is struggling with front-end grip. It looks like
:10:18. > :10:21.the front tyres are not coming up to temperature. This is valuable
:10:21. > :10:25.information for the battle between Vettel and Alonso. They will be
:10:25. > :10:32.like, OK, we will hang on a bit longer on the option tyres.
:10:32. > :10:36.noise you can hear is the front exhaust exist on a Renault. -- exit.
:10:36. > :10:39.All sorts of stuff going on with the throttles, much of it will be
:10:39. > :10:43.switched off in two weeks' time at Silverstone. We will hear less of
:10:43. > :10:53.that, but the Renault will since sound strange because of the front
:10:53. > :10:55.
:10:55. > :10:59.of anyone in the Grand Prix. -- Vettel does. They will not be
:11:00. > :11:05.rushing in to get their next set of tyres. Webber has not touched a
:11:05. > :11:09.personal best time on this time either. He is not matching even the
:11:09. > :11:13.use its tyres. We saw Ferrari getting ready. I think they were
:11:13. > :11:19.throwing a dummy. They went back in to wrap up the tyres. You are not
:11:19. > :11:25.allowed to hang out in the pit-lane and the inner workings own, so that
:11:25. > :11:31.was a genuine, we are coming in, oh, no, we are not, or it was to force
:11:31. > :11:39.Red Bull that they needed to cover it. Their car and Kobayashi for
:11:39. > :11:42.15th place. We still have 24 runners from 24 starters. That is
:11:42. > :11:46.why these drivers are fighting like crazy. He would normally expect to
:11:46. > :11:50.see them knocking on the door of the top 10. Kobayashi has regularly
:11:50. > :11:55.been in the points, as has Petrov, but they are currently fighting
:11:55. > :12:00.over 15. Kobayashi has stopped twice, Petrov three times. We are
:12:00. > :12:03.moving into the final stages of the Grand Prix. With 24 runners on the
:12:03. > :12:10.track, traffic is a bigger problem than we have seen of late, isn't
:12:10. > :12:17.it? It is, and it looks like we have some traffic for Vettel. Paul
:12:17. > :12:22.di Resta and Buemi are between him and Alonso. That gap has opened out,
:12:22. > :12:26.hasn't it? It is at 6.4 seconds between the race leader and the
:12:26. > :12:30.second man, Alonso. Ferrari are out into the pit lane again, the tyres
:12:30. > :12:37.and at this time, so we have to presume this is for Alonso. And he
:12:37. > :12:42.is in the pit. I am a bit surprised that they did not leave him out a
:12:42. > :12:45.bit longer, because the tyres... think it was the traffic, they
:12:45. > :12:52.would have lost too much time trying to get past the guys in
:12:53. > :12:59.between. Webber has got horrible traffic in front of him. So where
:12:59. > :13:04.is he? It is not enough. Look at that, it worked out perfectly for
:13:04. > :13:13.Alonso. He just manages to get past Petrov, and so does Webber, but
:13:13. > :13:17.still lots of traffic ahead. That, then, is going to be... Yes, Di
:13:17. > :13:27.Resta or, Glock is in there, Barrichello, or trying to get out
:13:27. > :13:28.
:13:28. > :13:31.of the way. And that is for from his second stop. Barrichello
:13:31. > :13:37.is right behind him. Alonso is getting caught up in that, so Mark
:13:37. > :13:42.Webber is right behind him now. Unusual to see so many cars
:13:42. > :13:47.fighting all the way down the field, no retirements. That is giving
:13:47. > :13:51.extra problems for the strategists to work out just how they can feed
:13:51. > :13:56.their drivers back into clean air. Maybe Mark will have the advantage
:13:56. > :14:01.now he has the chance to bring these prime tyres in. He struggled
:14:01. > :14:06.in the first two laps, so Alonso may have difficulty. This is Mark's
:14:06. > :14:10.moments, he has to try to get past the Ferrari now. He has more
:14:10. > :14:20.knowledge on these tyres as well. He has got to do a Kobayashi, just
:14:20. > :14:21.
:14:22. > :14:26.out of the way of that battle as we see them run down through the last
:14:26. > :14:31.sector, the section you love so much. Paul The Wrestler moved out
:14:31. > :14:41.of the way for them. -- Paul di Resta. All sorts of action going on
:14:41. > :14:44.
:14:44. > :14:49.that is for position. He has just made a pit stop. They are side by
:14:49. > :14:53.side down into turn one just as they meet the Toro Rosso coming out
:14:53. > :14:59.of the pit lane, four cars heading into the braking zone. Sebastien
:14:59. > :15:04.Buemi just came out in front of them. He is painfully slow through
:15:04. > :15:14.the exit, backing everybody up. Buemi, Kobayashi, Di Resta, Petrov,
:15:14. > :15:18.
:15:18. > :15:23.those two. Alonso and Webber are just catching Barrichello, and then
:15:23. > :15:28.they have got some clear air, but still Vettel stays out. He is still
:15:28. > :15:35.pumping in low 1:42s. He is the fastest man out there. Hamilton
:15:35. > :15:45.happy on those tyres, I'm doing 1:42s as well. Di Resta are still
:15:45. > :15:49.
:15:49. > :15:58.fighting like crazy with Kamui good racing all the way down the
:15:58. > :16:04.field. So and Vettel pits then. The leader pits. Ten laps to go. And
:16:04. > :16:08.Sebastien Vettel finally will come in for those medium compound tyres.
:16:08. > :16:14.He obviously just felt the rears beginning to go off or something.
:16:14. > :16:18.He's gone right to the edge of them and decided that now's a good time
:16:18. > :16:21.and how's traffic going to work for him? I think they'll have to get
:16:21. > :16:25.out of the way pretty quickly as well because they're lapped
:16:25. > :16:34.effectively, as the leader comes through, they'll be getting the
:16:34. > :16:39.blue flags. Karthikeyan is in the pit lane. He's running 24th. At the
:16:39. > :16:48.moment Kobayashi is winning the team Lotus battle. Let's run down
:16:48. > :16:52.the field heading into the closing stages. Vettel leads from Alonso.
:16:53. > :16:58.To Webber, Massa, Button, fifth, yet to make his third stop.
:16:58. > :17:03.Hamilton sixth. He has stopped three times. Then Rosberg,
:17:04. > :17:11.Alguersuari eighth. Sutil ninth. Heidfeld tenth. Perez one stopping,
:17:11. > :17:17.up in 11th at the moment. Barrichello 12th. Buemi 13th, Di
:17:17. > :17:25.Resta 14th, Kobayashi 15th, Petrov 16th. Mark Webber is in the DRS
:17:25. > :17:31.zone. His wing was open. Down into, what's that 17? Down into turn 12.
:17:31. > :17:36.So he'll get another blast of that. I wonder whether he's missed his
:17:36. > :17:42.moment with Alonso though. There are a few laps yet. Second place
:17:42. > :17:49.would be a bit better than third, obviously. So, Fernando Alonso pops
:17:49. > :17:53.in the fastest middle secondor of the race, 46.0. He's responding.
:17:53. > :17:56.He's a good straight behind though. It's certainly worked out very well
:17:56. > :18:01.for Vettel in terms of track position and distance ahead of
:18:01. > :18:04.Alonso. Ted? It's worked out well for Vettel in every sense. That was
:18:05. > :18:09.a lovely stop by Red Bull. Vettel seems to be the only driver who's
:18:09. > :18:16.had everything under control today. He's continuing very happily at the
:18:16. > :18:20.front. Lewis Hamilton's pace has picked up on the harder tyre, on
:18:20. > :18:25.1.426789 Mclaren are coming out now for Jenson Button. This will be
:18:25. > :18:30.interesting to see if there's KERS left. Paul di Resta was looking for
:18:30. > :18:34.10th place, now he's involved with Nick Heidfeld and Barrichello it
:18:34. > :18:39.could be it for Paul di Resta. Felipe Massa pits for the third
:18:39. > :18:44.time. We're expecting Button as well. He
:18:44. > :18:49.is in the pit lane. There he is. They're going to give him a tweak
:18:49. > :18:53.of front wing adjustment as well. That will change the balance
:18:53. > :18:56.presumably because of the medium compound tyre. They want an
:18:56. > :19:02.automatic aerobalance change. put a bit more front wing in with
:19:02. > :19:06.that tyre. Especially with the difficulty getting the front to
:19:06. > :19:11.bite to leave the pits on the first couple of laps. He'll have the
:19:11. > :19:16.benefit of some feed back from Lewis, presumably. There's only
:19:16. > :19:23.been three races in history where we've had no retirements in a Grand
:19:23. > :19:29.Prix, 1961, Dutch Grand Prix, American Grand Prix and Italian
:19:29. > :19:35.Grand Prix in 2005. Only six cars started in 2005 in America, when
:19:35. > :19:41.the Michelin tyres weren't used. So we have a remarkable situation, if
:19:41. > :19:45.they all get to the end. Commentators' curse there I imagine.
:19:45. > :19:51.The most finishers ever in a Grand Prix of 23. That was in the Chinese
:19:51. > :19:55.Grand Prix earlier this year. That's reliability, it's impressive.
:19:55. > :20:01.It's giving us lots of good racing and giving the leaders plenty of
:20:01. > :20:07.headaches as well. Now it's all shaken out from the final stops,
:20:07. > :20:14.Vettel's lead is 8.7 seconds. Over Fernando Alonso, who is just 2.5
:20:14. > :20:19.ahead of Mark Webber. Then 28.7 seconds clear of fourth place Lewis
:20:19. > :20:23.Hamilton, who I think could well have Felipe Massa closing in on
:20:23. > :20:28.Massa, lost a lot of time in the pit stop. Let's see what the gap is
:20:29. > :20:33.now. Massa and Button have finished, so
:20:33. > :20:37.Massa is 7.4 behind Hamilton. We wait for Button to go over the line
:20:37. > :20:43.as well to see if he's anywhere near chasing the down the Ferrari.
:20:43. > :20:51.The tail end of the top ten, the biggest fight is Adrian Sutil is
:20:51. > :20:55.only 2.4 seconds behind the two stopping Alguersuari for Toro Rosso.
:20:55. > :21:03.Button 12.4 behind Felipe Massa. The top three now covered by 11.3
:21:03. > :21:09.seconds. It's Red Bull from Ferrari from Red Bull and Mclaren, Ferrari,
:21:09. > :21:17.Mclaren, fourth, fifth and sixth. So those three teams looking out
:21:17. > :21:22.the top six, best of the rest. Nico Rosberg in seventh. We watch Petrov
:21:22. > :21:27.and Kobayashi still fighting hard over 15th place. No points or
:21:27. > :21:32.prizes or driver bonuses for that, I would imagine. But they like to
:21:32. > :21:37.have a go. Kobayashi has impressed in his short career with his
:21:37. > :21:43.overtaking skills. Petrov has come on so much since his first year in
:21:43. > :21:47.Formula One. He's in the DRS zone, throws it down the inside, realises
:21:47. > :21:52.he's overcooked it and sensibly drives it straight, regains control.
:21:52. > :21:56.He'll think, right, I'll make that stick the next lack. He threw the
:21:56. > :22:04.anchor out a bit too late there. Kobayashi lucky not to knock the
:22:04. > :22:09.front wing off. Well, I criticised Perez's strategy, and I was so
:22:09. > :22:17.correct on that. He's running 11th at the moment, knocking on the door
:22:17. > :22:20.of some points if anybody has a problem. He's got Barrichello is 11
:22:20. > :22:24.seconds adrift. They're all busy fighting each other, Perez's one
:22:24. > :22:28.stop has got him up there. It's so difficult to judge what's going on
:22:28. > :22:32.with these tyres at any given point. You're dealing with the changing
:22:32. > :22:38.fuel loads. They might be in difficulty at one point with the
:22:38. > :22:45.tyres, but then it can come back to them as well. Good performances
:22:45. > :22:49.from Alguersuari and Sutil. Eighth and ninth place. Disappointing for
:22:49. > :22:55.Heidfeld, I could have difficulty with my pronunciations, we don't
:22:55. > :22:59.have many of those names in Scotland! So Alonso hasn't got
:22:59. > :23:06.anything to take the fight to Vettel. He's eight seconds adrift.
:23:06. > :23:12.And Webber holding station. They're all doing, the last lap they all
:23:12. > :23:19.did 42.5. This lap is 42.2 for Vettel. There's Webber, third place
:23:19. > :23:23.man. Now 9.4 back to Alonso and 2.4 back to Webber. The story here then
:23:23. > :23:31.is can Mark Webber catch Fernando Alonso and put Red Bull back into
:23:31. > :23:40.the one, two situation? Half a minute clear of Hamilton in fourth.
:23:40. > :23:43.Paul di Resta in 14th. There's still a race to have here mate.
:23:43. > :23:51.Barrichello we could have Buemi and Barrichello.
:23:51. > :23:55.It might be possible, but they're all doing 1.44 that whole pack.
:23:55. > :24:00.He's got a couple of seconds to find to the back of Buemi. You
:24:00. > :24:05.never know, he might steal a point even from there with last lap
:24:05. > :24:10.dramas. Vettel was tardy initially off the line, but held first place
:24:10. > :24:15.into the first corner. The two Ferraris were fighting like crazy.
:24:15. > :24:20.Initially it was Massa ahead then Alonso, retook that. It was Red
:24:20. > :24:24.Bull one and two, Ferrari three and four. Fernando Alonso on the soft
:24:24. > :24:30.tyres looked as if he had enough pace to keep the Red Bulls honest
:24:30. > :24:38.all afternoon and he has done that. They haven't been comfortable or
:24:38. > :24:43.had any free air at all to make pit stops when it suited them. They had
:24:44. > :24:50.to stay on the strategy and pace of Ferrari. Alonso has got himself in
:24:50. > :24:55.between the two Red Bulls. He will not give up, will not let them go.
:24:55. > :25:00.Mclaren consistently then fell away, pace-wise, they're fourth and sixth
:25:00. > :25:05.at the moment, Hamilton and Button. Best of the rest then, Nico Rosberg
:25:05. > :25:10.in seventh. The leaders have chosen a three-stop strategy, as the
:25:10. > :25:14.fastest way to do this race, the first two stopper is Alguersuari
:25:14. > :25:19.for Toro Rosso, currently in eighth place. Struggling on lap times
:25:19. > :25:27.though. He's doing a 47.0 at the moment. He's about to have a lot of
:25:27. > :25:31.company. There's Sutil, Heidfeld, Perez and possibly even Rubens
:25:31. > :25:37.Barrichello. So that's for the tail end of the point scorers.
:25:37. > :25:40.Alguersuari has not got this sorted at the moment. 1.47.0, means he's
:25:40. > :25:49.two, three seconds off the pace as his tyres begin to fade in the
:25:49. > :25:52.closing stages of this European Grand Prix. Vettel, a new fastest
:25:52. > :25:57.first sector. He's having a laugh up front there, David. It seems to
:25:57. > :26:02.be the case. Just when we thought we had a battle going on in the
:26:02. > :26:08.first couple of stints, right at the end of the harder tyre, the one
:26:08. > :26:11.that they've left right to the last moments to race on, he's put in the
:26:11. > :26:16.fastest first sector. Remarkably the lap times, if we consider what
:26:16. > :26:21.the fastest lap was last year, different racing conditions, but
:26:21. > :26:25.38.7 was the fastest last year and we're doing 41.4, when you contrast
:26:25. > :26:28.that with qualifying, which was a faster pace with the use of DRS and
:26:28. > :26:32.KERS, it shows how the face of Formula One, the competitive
:26:32. > :26:42.conditions in which they race has changed. Faster opportunities for
:26:42. > :26:45.qualifying and slower opportunities for raigs. -- racing. 41 .852 the
:26:45. > :26:49.fastest lab. Mark we have a gearbox problem. Short shift in the low
:26:49. > :26:53.gears. Short shift in the low gears, we
:26:53. > :26:59.were saying earlier, it is the case. We've said it before with Mark
:26:59. > :27:02.Webber. If he didn't have bad luck, he wouldn't have any luck at all.
:27:02. > :27:06.They've detected something in the software telling them to reduce the
:27:06. > :27:12.torque on the low gears. That's why he will short shift. Second, third,
:27:12. > :27:18.fourth, he's got enough of a window a 31-second window to Hamilton
:27:18. > :27:23.behind, but what that means is any hopes in the last three laps of
:27:24. > :27:27.securing second place have gone out of the window. Bar a mechanical
:27:27. > :27:33.issue for Alonso or Vettel it will be third place for Mark Webber this
:27:33. > :27:37.afternoon. That's where the major torque is in the shorter gears,
:27:37. > :27:41.where you pump the torque of the engine into the gearbox. They're
:27:41. > :27:45.saying gearbox is hot. Saying just get out of the gears as early as
:27:45. > :27:50.you can. That's the confirmation of the fastest lap that Vettel D
:27:50. > :27:54.there's another story unfolding, because Felipe Massa is catching
:27:54. > :28:04.Lewis Hamilton as well. They're in fourth and fifth places. Button did
:28:04. > :28:12.
:28:12. > :28:17.his personal best lap of the race. We watch this battle between Sutil
:28:17. > :28:24.and Alguersuari. Alguersuari must have had a bad lap. He got himself
:28:24. > :28:29.into the 43s, now 43.5. That 47.0uals a scruffy lap or very bad
:28:30. > :28:33.traffic. Sutil then six tenths behind and within the DRS zone, if
:28:33. > :28:37.he can hold that, down to turn eight. Heidfeld and Perez not
:28:37. > :28:42.catching them. I expect some action here. There's
:28:42. > :28:47.a big result for either of these guys to take eighth place. That
:28:47. > :28:51.would be well deserved by either of them. Great performance this
:28:51. > :28:56.afternoon. That's within a second, there's the detection zone. Two
:28:56. > :29:00.long back straights, he'll have another eight or nine miles now,
:29:00. > :29:05.plus you can see, both desperately trying to get the power down, stop
:29:05. > :29:09.the rear wheels from spinning. Now we'll see presumably, we should
:29:09. > :29:16.start homing in on the Toro Rosso towards the end of the straight.
:29:16. > :29:22.We're on the limiter, he has the DRS open but his seventh gear is so
:29:22. > :29:31.short that it's not really. He's bouncing off the 18,000-rev limit
:29:31. > :29:34.in Top Gear. So the DRS is not giving him the benefit it should.
:29:34. > :29:40.That's Felipe Massa getting up behind Glock in the Virgin. That
:29:40. > :29:44.should be fairly straightforward across the Swing Bridge. It's just
:29:44. > :29:48.4.7 behind Hamilton now. He's catching him at about three
:29:48. > :29:52.quarters of a second on the reefious lap. Button I think is
:29:53. > :29:57.solidly down there in sixth, same for Rosberg in seventh. It's
:29:57. > :30:01.Alguersuari and Sutil now we're looking at, plenty of fights going
:30:01. > :30:06.on between Buemi, Di Resta, Kobayashi.
:30:06. > :30:09.Ted? Come back into Mclaren, I was asking their man Simon Roberts why
:30:09. > :30:13.they weren't particularly quick today. He said it's nothing that we
:30:13. > :30:17.expected. The feeling down here is that when they get to a hot race
:30:17. > :30:22.like this, where tyres are critical, they slip back behind Ferrari.
:30:22. > :30:27.Ferrari will have an advantage when tyres are the issue. Team radio.
:30:27. > :30:30.Lewis you're doing a great job. Still five seconds gap.
:30:30. > :30:34.Encouraging Lewis Hamilton to close on Mark Webber with the gearbox
:30:34. > :30:39.problem. That's a good call. What about the next race Martin? I know
:30:39. > :30:42.Mark Webber hasn't taken his gearbox choker yet. If he needs a
:30:42. > :30:47.new gearbox before Silverstone we wouldn't expect him to get a
:30:47. > :30:51.penalty. That's right. You get one free change of gearbox. Have you to
:30:51. > :30:55.make them last five races, otherwise you take a five place
:30:55. > :31:01.grid drop. This is the five. You can hear him bouncing on the
:31:01. > :31:06.limiter. That will keep him behind the Toro Rosso. Unless he can
:31:06. > :31:10.surprise in the braking zone. That choice of seventh gear, is locked
:31:10. > :31:14.off once you get into qualifying, in fact it's locked off two hours
:31:15. > :31:24.after free practice two. When you go into Saturday, you're stuck with
:31:25. > :31:40.
:31:40. > :31:44.it. He gets closer, but he's not race, he will be the first man ever
:31:44. > :31:54.to never finished out of the top two in the first eight races of any
:31:54. > :31:54.
:31:55. > :31:59.grand prix season. Carelessly at the front. Using his head. And
:31:59. > :32:05.using his tyres better than anybody, keeping them intact, not taking
:32:05. > :32:10.that instant grip when available. Playing belong game. Keeping the
:32:10. > :32:20.car in a good track position. So calm behind the wheel of this Red
:32:20. > :32:21.
:32:21. > :32:30.Bull Renault. He has only follow the back markers, he led from the
:32:30. > :32:40.lights going out. Other than during the pit stop. This has been a study
:32:40. > :32:42.
:32:42. > :32:48.in dominance for Sebastian Vettel. The pit stops were great. We have
:32:48. > :32:52.not seen him put any wheel wrong. Other than possibly just
:32:52. > :32:57.fractionally slower off the start line. That is the only thing you
:32:57. > :33:04.could look at and say was not perfect this afternoon. As he heads
:33:04. > :33:11.towards the end of the 57th and final lap. The European Grand Prix,
:33:11. > :33:20.here in Valencia. Sebastian Vettel. He will take his 6th win in eight
:33:20. > :33:25.races. An utterly dominant performance. Yet again, Sebastian
:33:25. > :33:30.Vettel, Red Bull will not get one, too, because this man in the back
:33:30. > :33:35.of the picture, Fernando Alonso, at least has kept Red Bull on us this
:33:35. > :33:40.afternoon with a very strong second place. Mark Webber protecting his
:33:40. > :33:47.gearbox and has fallen behind. And is yet to cross the line. There he
:33:47. > :33:51.is. For the final step on the podium. Sebastian Vettel, Fernando
:33:51. > :33:58.Alonso, Mark Webber and then 20 seconds, Lewis Hamilton coming
:33:58. > :34:04.through that final section. He is also relatively calm and coasting.
:34:04. > :34:09.Not under pressure. 4.5 seconds adrift. He salvages 4th place, that
:34:09. > :34:15.is the only way it can be described this afternoon. 46 seconds behind
:34:15. > :34:21.the winner. Michael Schumacher in 17th place. He has been lapped.
:34:21. > :34:27.Felipe Massa takes 70s. The bus of Red Bull sees his cars when it
:34:27. > :34:33.again. Taking on the might of Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes Benz
:34:33. > :34:43.and they keep on winning. Fantastic drive, Sir. Brilliant. Brilliant
:34:43. > :34:45.
:34:45. > :34:51.afternoon, well done. Yes! Yes! Fantastic, boys! Better than
:34:51. > :34:57.anything you could imagine. That was such a nice race. I wonder what
:34:57. > :35:02.he thinks is better than the other five he has won this season? His
:35:02. > :35:06.16th Grand Prix victory. It might be because there was speculation
:35:06. > :35:09.that some of the engine software changes being made, people were
:35:09. > :35:16.hoping that this would be the demise of their dominance. Not
:35:16. > :35:20.today. And a well earned the eighth place for Alguersuari, to pit stops,
:35:21. > :35:30.he fought hard. Kept the car in the right part of the track to keep
:35:31. > :35:33.
:35:33. > :35:42.Adrian Sutil behind him in 9th place and Heidfeld in 10th. Perez,
:35:42. > :35:48.he did finish 11th. But he does not get any points. Then Barrichello,
:35:48. > :35:56.polemic, Paul di Resta, Kobayashi, 16. Schumacher, Maldonado. That was
:35:56. > :36:02.a very good drive. You just lost out. He bumped into traffic. And we
:36:02. > :36:11.did indeed have 24 finishes in the Grand Prix. Who is your driver of
:36:11. > :36:15.the day, to that? -- David? Excluding the obvious candidates,
:36:15. > :36:20.Alguersuari, the Toro Rosso has done a good job under pressure. His
:36:20. > :36:25.best result of the season. Beyond that, there wasn't a great deal of
:36:25. > :36:32.wheel to wheel action, it was an exercise in controlled, disciplined
:36:32. > :36:36.driving. Difficult to see anybody putting a foot wrong. Interesting,

:36:58. > :37:03.
:37:03. > :37:07.for Williams. Liuzzi beats Karthikeyan. Why do you think it
:37:08. > :37:12.has not been one of those wild races that we have seen, even in
:37:12. > :37:18.Barcelona? We're getting to that stage in the season, despite
:37:18. > :37:23.Pirelli bringing the different tyres, strategies are now being
:37:23. > :37:27.understood, the performances are being analysed from Friday practice.
:37:28. > :37:32.What we had based on Friday information was Red Bull were
:37:32. > :37:38.fastest from Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault and that has played out in
:37:38. > :37:41.the results. We are starting to get enough information so no matter
:37:41. > :37:47.what fuel levels people run, we are starting to see what will be the
:37:47. > :37:51.best strategy. Unless someone has tripping over traffic or has bad
:37:51. > :37:56.weather conditions, we should not be surprised that the fastest man
:37:56. > :38:02.in qualifying is going off at the front of the race. Strong
:38:02. > :38:05.performance from Ferrari. Fernando Alonso will be delighted at
:38:05. > :38:12.continuing his friend of telling us this has been the best season he
:38:12. > :38:16.has had in terms of driving and is on performance. As we see, once
:38:16. > :38:20.again, the one thing that his rivals fear is that a number one
:38:20. > :38:29.finger being pointed at the camera. We are beginning to misinterpret
:38:29. > :38:39.which finger he is showing! There you go. That finger. He was hugging
:38:39. > :38:39.
:38:39. > :38:43.Ian Morgan, the chief engineer. That was a rather limp hog with
:38:43. > :38:48.Fernando Alonso! When you go for that case and you are not sure if
:38:48. > :38:55.it is left or right, it is like that when winning 3,000 worth of
:38:55. > :39:00.carbon fibre. It isn't good. Mark Webber, with his eyes are closed,
:39:00. > :39:05.no one is in a rush to get their helmet off. No sweat. That confirms
:39:05. > :39:08.that the fastest lap was three seconds slower than last year and
:39:08. > :39:18.physically, the challenge is reducing in Formula One for these
:39:18. > :39:25.guys. The actual challenge of driving on the limit... And that
:39:25. > :39:35.was the case! He isn't bothering to take his helmet off. Keeping his
:39:35. > :39:39.
:39:39. > :39:49.head warm. Everything comes off, now. The radio, earplugs, close,
:39:49. > :39:53.
:39:53. > :40:00.balaclava. The way in. The old- fashioned system of writing it down
:40:00. > :40:05.on a notebook. His weight will be added to that of the car. As long
:40:05. > :40:12.as it is over 640 kilograms, they will not be thrown out of the Grand
:40:12. > :40:16.Prix! Fernando Alonso, probably about to wish Sebastian Vettel a
:40:16. > :40:20.happy birthday for the coming week, when he will be 24 years old.
:40:20. > :40:27.Pretty ominous, what he is doing now. He could be around for another
:40:27. > :40:32.dozen years, easily, at the front. You would still say that a driver's
:40:32. > :40:42.Prime is around 30. I think they might need to do with that with
:40:42. > :40:52.
:40:52. > :40:57.Sebastian Vettel. -- low were that. -- lower that. He has led Sebastian
:40:57. > :41:01.Vettel on four laps this year. How does he keep his chin up?
:41:01. > :41:06.Straightforward, qualifying in front of him! Get that track

:43:26. > :43:33.definitely this man. Sebastian Vettel. Rewriting the record books
:43:33. > :43:43.already, as he lifts the winner's trophy. He has only dropped 14
:43:43. > :43:50.points this season so far. Placido Domingo. Ian Morgan takes a
:43:50. > :43:57.constructors trophy. We will hear the Austrian and then for the team.
:43:57. > :44:03.-- anthem. And the matador, here in Spain. He drove as hard as he could
:44:03. > :44:07.but it was not good enough on the day. Two world champions up on the
:44:07. > :44:17.podium. The first time Fernando Alonso has been on the podium here
:44:17. > :44:19.
:44:19. > :44:23.in Valencia. Mark Webber is handed his third-place trophy. Another
:44:23. > :44:28.podium for him, he looks happier than some of them, it has to be
:44:28. > :44:34.said. Relieved to get to the end of the Grand Prix. The first man with
:44:34. > :44:41.the champagne, save some for the mechanics! And maybe some for later
:44:41. > :44:47.on. Why they contemplate higher on earth they are going to match the
:44:47. > :44:57.speed and the brains of the World Championship leader by 77 points.
:44:57. > :44:58.
:44:58. > :45:03.Almost a servitude celebration, but I suppose Sebastian Vettel is
:45:03. > :45:08.getting used to it. -- servitude. They will be thinking, I can do
:45:09. > :45:12.with a drink! That it will take away the fact that Sebastian Vettel
:45:12. > :45:18.has won six of the eight races. He can stay at home for the next three
:45:18. > :45:23.races and still the leading. 77 points ahead of his nearest rival.
:45:23. > :45:27.What a drive from him. Really, it is unassailable in my view, at this
:45:27. > :45:33.stage. I cannot possibly see where the real competition against him is
:45:33. > :45:38.going to come. We hope that McLaren would make a big impact, but they
:45:38. > :45:42.were very poor today. Ferrari may be, but there is how long way ahead.
:45:42. > :45:47.We have to hope there will be some exciting races and fan. Sebastian
:45:47. > :45:51.Vettel is looking excited, milking the podium, showing off his trophy
:45:51. > :45:56.and his champagne, a great sight to his team principal, Christian
:45:56. > :46:00.Horner. Well done, Christian Horner. That was interesting on the team
:46:00. > :46:04.radio. He said, this is better than you can imagine. Was that because
:46:04. > :46:08.people were questioning whether he lost his nerve after Canada?
:46:08. > :46:12.think he does really enjoyed his afternoon. It was a fantastic race
:46:12. > :46:18.for him. Yes, he just got it right from start to finish, a great
:46:18. > :46:24.afternoon. Did Canada hurt? Was this the tonic he needed? I think
:46:24. > :46:28.so. It was a great performance. It was a very controlled race. It was
:46:28. > :46:34.tight with Alonso, a tough afternoon. It was not as easy as it
:46:34. > :46:40.looked. There was less action with the DRS than we expected. Unlucky
:46:40. > :46:45.for Mark not to keep the two. But it was close. A tough weekend for
:46:45. > :46:49.Mark Webber. David Coulthard, no driver has ever started the first
:46:49. > :46:54.eight races of the season finishing in the top two every time, almost a
:46:54. > :46:58.record-breaking dash down from the commentary box! Wherever we go,
:46:58. > :47:02.when other drivers are struggling with pace, reliability or with
:47:02. > :47:08.their rivals, Sebastian looks serene at the front. Yes, excuse me,
:47:08. > :47:13.I will take my ears out, talk back issues! He was faultless at the
:47:13. > :47:16.front. He gave us hope that we had a race on our hands, he only had a
:47:16. > :47:21.two-second gap to Mark Webber and then the same to Fernando Alonso.
:47:21. > :47:26.But he seems to be open at Ayr when he needs to control the race and go
:47:26. > :47:30.for his fastest lap at the end. He likes his statistics, and although
:47:30. > :47:35.it makes the team nervous, he tears up the engine and delivers a quick
:47:35. > :47:40.lap. Rob marshal, the chief designer, is with us. Either you
:47:40. > :47:46.are making so that in Look driver, or he is making you look like a
:47:46. > :47:50.clever man. He is a very good driver, to be honest! Such a talent.
:47:50. > :47:55.You work on the car, the dedication that you and Adrian put into it,
:47:55. > :48:00.when you see someone driving it that well. It was fantastic. Yet
:48:00. > :48:05.again, he has not put a foot wrong. Awesome performance from start to
:48:05. > :48:12.finish. Spectacular performance, really. If you were the manager of
:48:12. > :48:17.the other teams, what would you try to do to beat him? Copy us! That is
:48:17. > :48:21.never a good excuse, but maybe it is the only one. Can I just ask you,
:48:21. > :48:25.maybe the viewers would like to try to understand, why are we seeing
:48:25. > :48:29.this switch behind with Ferrari and McLaren at different circuits?
:48:29. > :48:34.Forget your guys, can you explain that to the viewers? This one is a
:48:34. > :48:37.different sort of circuit. I think it has been a bit of a struggle for
:48:37. > :48:42.most of the drivers to get on top of the tyres this weekend. It is an
:48:42. > :48:47.unusual circuit, lots of 90 degree corners. Not many fast corners. We
:48:47. > :48:51.have not been to a circuit like that. The track temperature is very
:48:51. > :48:55.hard. It has been a steep learning curve for everyone. We hear Ferrari
:48:55. > :48:58.are interested in your skills and abilities. Use of about Red Bull,
:48:58. > :49:03.time to help someone else that Mark they have not spoken to me about
:49:04. > :49:11.it! I am sure you are very expensive! Enjoy the celebrations.
:49:11. > :49:15.Thank you very much indeed. some reason, McLaren's race pace,
:49:15. > :49:19.which they had been boasting about all weekend, they tell us, wait
:49:19. > :49:25.until Sunday, well, we did, and they could not do much. We can hear
:49:25. > :49:29.from Martin Whitmarsh. Martin, some good points, but explain why
:49:29. > :49:34.Ferrari seemed to have been quicker than you today. Is it that when we
:49:34. > :49:38.get to a circuit wet tyres are key, they seem to be easier on them?
:49:38. > :49:43.think we were probably overheating the tyres. They have a stronger DRS
:49:43. > :49:48.system. This is a DRS-strong circuit. As you may know, Jenson
:49:48. > :49:53.had a KERS failure halfway through the race, so he was closing half a
:49:53. > :49:56.second per lap as a consequence. He was easier on the tyres. I think
:49:56. > :50:03.Lewis did a good job after the start that we had, but very
:50:03. > :50:07.difficult to get back on terms. We have had three races with very
:50:07. > :50:12.quick cars. It was not the quickest race car today. I think we were
:50:12. > :50:17.quite close to the Ferrari pace, not as fast as Red Bull in the race,
:50:17. > :50:20.but we will see what we can do in two weeks' time. The British from
:50:20. > :50:25.free, so important for McLaren. Would you have the quickest race
:50:25. > :50:30.car there? Well, surprisingly, that is what we are going to be working
:50:30. > :50:34.on! But you never know, every circuit is different. We will have
:50:34. > :50:38.some developments. That is the interesting thing about this season.
:50:38. > :50:42.The last two years have been quite intriguing. Obviously, Red Bull is
:50:42. > :50:48.very, very strong. Disappointing that we do not have their race pace
:50:48. > :50:52.at this event. You know, after the disappointing start, it is quite
:50:52. > :50:56.difficult to recover in traffic. You damage the tyres pretty quickly.
:50:56. > :51:00.That has clearly made it difficult to do the lengthy stint that we
:51:00. > :51:03.wanted. We lost a bit too much time. On the other hand, we are a long
:51:03. > :51:08.way ahead of the others behind us, but we need to be in front of Red
:51:08. > :51:12.Bull. A clear message from Martin Whitmarsh, we were not as quick as
:51:12. > :51:16.we hoped to be here, but we will be quick at Silverstone. That is where
:51:16. > :51:18.Jenson Button will be arriving joint second in the Constructors'
:51:18. > :51:25.Championship and Drivers' Championship, despite today
:51:25. > :51:35.finishing in a lowly six. Jenson, Lewis and Paul Black Rod going to
:51:35. > :51:53.
:51:53. > :51:57.Britain in a couple of weeks... -- I tell you what, we would not mind
:51:57. > :52:02.this weather in a couple of weeks, Eddie. I think we would be frazzled,
:52:02. > :52:06.shrivelled up into nothing, this is just so warm. It is the real start
:52:06. > :52:11.of the summer, I suppose. Frazzled and do nothing, not a picture I
:52:11. > :52:15.want in my mind! Talk to me about McLaren. They did not have the race
:52:15. > :52:19.pace. Martin Whitmarsh was at a loss to explain it, maybe the heat
:52:19. > :52:23.had something to do that. That is why I ask why the others were
:52:23. > :52:27.struggling. It is so difficult to explain why you do not have the
:52:27. > :52:31.pace. In my experience, when you are winning races, everyone goes,
:52:31. > :52:35.of course we are, we are better than everyone else. When you are
:52:35. > :52:39.not winning, oh, well, we think we are working on something. Nobody
:52:39. > :52:41.really understands. There are so many black arts in Formula One to
:52:41. > :52:45.extract every last bit of performance to give drivers
:52:45. > :52:49.confidence. The man with the most confident right now is Sebastian
:52:49. > :52:55.Vettel. He is in the drivers' press conference as race winner of the
:52:55. > :52:58.sixth time this season, sitting in the middle. Sebastian, another win.
:52:58. > :53:03.He described it on the team radio as better than anything you can
:53:03. > :53:07.imagine. Why the rate this win so highly? Why we are feeling so high
:53:07. > :53:10.after victory? Maybe from the outside, you know, I do not know
:53:10. > :53:17.how much was happening in the Grand Prix, but maybe for myself, it
:53:17. > :53:20.looked like a boring race. But I will tell you, I enjoyed it so much.
:53:20. > :53:24.Between you and the car every single lap, I did have pressure
:53:24. > :53:27.from behind at times, because the strategy was different from Mark
:53:27. > :53:32.and Fernando, so it sometimes they were pitting earlier, sometimes
:53:32. > :53:38.later. Even though I had a gap before the stop, I came out and
:53:38. > :53:42.they were quite close again. Again, pushing hard, judging the tyres,
:53:42. > :53:46.trying to imagine what the end of the stint could be like, trying to
:53:46. > :53:51.foresee the strategy. Every single lap between you and the car, as I
:53:51. > :53:55.said. For some reason, I enjoy this track. Last year I had a smooth
:53:55. > :53:59.weekend, again this year. Fantastic, the team has done a phenomenal job
:53:59. > :54:04.preparing the car. You know, even though we come every year and say,
:54:04. > :54:09.this might be tricky, because the track is not made for us 100%, with
:54:09. > :54:14.no real fast corners, but we managed to put everything together.
:54:14. > :54:21.For us this weekend, I am very happy with the result, obviously. -
:54:22. > :54:25.- Fernando, for some laps it was just you and your Ferrari, that you
:54:25. > :54:29.and Mark were very close and the track, a great battle.
:54:29. > :54:34.interesting race for the fans and the people on TV to see the fight
:54:34. > :54:38.with Webber. All the race through, I think. At the beginning of the
:54:38. > :54:43.race, I was behind him, trying to be not too far and trying to have
:54:43. > :54:47.the benefit in the pit stop, have the opportunity to overtake him.
:54:47. > :54:53.The opportunity came later in the middle of the race, but on the
:54:53. > :54:58.track, not in the pits. I overtake them on the braking zone for turn
:54:58. > :55:04.12. On the pits, they did a good job and overtook us. On the Last
:55:04. > :55:09.Star, the team did a good strategy, keeping the car out longer than the
:55:09. > :55:15.Red Bull. -- on the last stop. The car performed well, and we overtook
:55:15. > :55:20.him finally. Changing positions between Mark and me, at the end,
:55:20. > :55:23.second place was the maximum we can have in these days. Been here
:55:23. > :55:28.between the Red Bull cars is a great achievement from the team.
:55:28. > :55:31.Monaco was very good performance for weekend, we finished second.
:55:31. > :55:37.Canada was very good performance, we do not score any points. Here,
:55:37. > :55:39.again, very good weekend, potential performance, both cars in the top
:55:39. > :55:43.five is a great team result. Definitely moving in the right
:55:43. > :55:49.direction. We need to keep working and get closer to the skies in the
:55:49. > :55:52.next one, hopefully. Mark, Fernando mentioned the changing positions.
:55:52. > :55:57.He received an apology on the team radio. Was that because you should
:55:57. > :56:01.have finished second today? I think we should have, but in the end we
:56:01. > :56:05.did not. It was a good race with Fernando. It was probably my best
:56:05. > :56:09.race of the year up until the last pit stop. It was quite close with
:56:09. > :56:13.all three of us. Obviously, we are trying to go as fast as possible,
:56:13. > :56:17.manage the tyres. It is always the same these days. I was very happy
:56:17. > :56:22.with how the race was going until the last stop, and it was my fault,
:56:22. > :56:27.not the team's. I elected to... I was right about Fernando coming in
:56:27. > :56:30.beneath me, and it was not really knowing how the medium tyre would
:56:30. > :56:35.perform on the out lap. For sure, it is not as good as the soft, but
:56:36. > :56:41.is it better than an old sock? I took that risk, and I lost out. Ben
:56:41. > :56:45.Ando stayed out for a few more laps, I came out into traffic. --
:56:45. > :56:49.Fernando. I miss second today, Fernando drove a good race. We were
:56:49. > :56:54.all nip and tuck all the way to the end. At the end, the gearbox was
:56:54. > :57:00.playing up. We had to back right off. We had a massive gap to
:57:00. > :57:10.McLaren, they were one sector behind at least, if not two.
:57:10. > :57:11.
:57:11. > :57:14.deflated Mark Webber. What did not in Valencia. Lewis Hamilton will be
:57:14. > :57:19.another frustrated driver. We will have a look at the start of the
:57:19. > :57:23.race from his point of view in a moment. Nico Rosberg, Jaime
:57:23. > :57:30.Alguersuari, his best-ever finish in Formula One. Nick Heidfeld Franz
:57:30. > :57:33.off the top 10. Sergio Perez disappearing into 11th place. He
:57:33. > :57:40.stopped just once during the Grand Prix. Is lap times may have been
:57:40. > :57:45.slow, but it helps not stopping too much. Michael Schumacher lost his
:57:45. > :57:49.front wing and ended up 17th. The new teams at the very back. 24 cars
:57:49. > :57:52.finished this race. We saw how busy it was on track as the front-
:57:52. > :58:02.runners were trying to get past. Sadly, they could not. This is what
:58:02. > :58:09.
:58:09. > :58:13.it means for the Drivers' the teams want, this is the one
:58:14. > :58:18.that the money attached, and it is first for Red Bull, McLaren, and
:58:18. > :58:23.then Ferrari. Renault are behind Mercedes at the moment. Back to the
:58:23. > :58:26.very start of the race now. We saw the start from 2010 in that build
:58:26. > :58:30.up, an incredible start from Lewis Hamilton, but if we look at this
:58:30. > :58:37.weekend, the great start was from Felipe Massa. But he could not make
:58:37. > :58:40.it stick. Difficult conditions on the grid with 150 kilograms of fuel.
:58:40. > :58:43.Felipe Massa right around the outside of the McLaren. He has
:58:43. > :58:48.another look at Mark Webber. The bails out and allows Fernando
:58:48. > :58:53.Alonso to get around the outside. Then they ran in that order on the
:58:53. > :59:03.way down to the second chicane. In all that incident, we would get an
:59:03. > :59:06.
:59:06. > :59:12.overview here. Rosberg managed to Alonso and Hamilton. It looks safe
:59:12. > :59:16.macro at his point, but having a snip at Webber was very costly. The
:59:16. > :59:22.next corner is a left-hander, so he assumes the position. Just behind
:59:22. > :59:27.that, Rosberg slipped in front of Button. Sorry, Eddie, I can see are
:59:27. > :59:32.trying to get in. Button was very wide in turn one, so we would have
:59:32. > :59:36.had dusty tyres on a run into turn 2. None the less, a clean start
:59:37. > :59:46.from all the cars. The thing that impresses me more than anything was
:59:47. > :59:47.
:59:47. > :59:51.the clear running of Vettel. Now we he gets the place back against
:59:51. > :59:55.Massa. I would have to say it was a very strong raised by Alonso today,
:59:55. > :00:02.and it showed a slight resurgence of performance from Ferrari. We
:00:02. > :00:12.have not seen that much in recent times. However, Lewis again. For me,
:00:12. > :00:17.
:00:17. > :00:20.and then Fernando Alonso, his nemesis, going around the outside.
:00:20. > :00:25.At this point Lewis Hamilton was hot under the collar and his
:00:25. > :00:30.frustrations grew. He did keep them controlled. Bearing in mind the
:00:30. > :00:34.last couple of races he has had and I thought there were times at the
:00:34. > :00:39.car let him down. What is interesting is Fernando Alonso has
:00:39. > :00:45.been delighted with his last two races, very happy to be second. And
:00:45. > :00:49.Lewis Hamilton, frustrated. Just not happy. The car isn't giving him
:00:49. > :00:54.the opportunity to win championships and you can sense in
:00:54. > :00:59.all the radio communication, at one point he said he couldn't go any
:00:59. > :01:07.slower and the next, he could not go any faster! Some frustration for
:01:07. > :01:13.Lewis Hamilton, he always finished second here but not today. How
:01:13. > :01:18.would you sum up today? Could result compared to the last race!
:01:18. > :01:22.Nice to see the chequered flag but it did sound frustrating that there.
:01:22. > :01:28.At some points you are being told to slow down and that others, to
:01:28. > :01:35.get more. How difficult is it to get on with your job? It was not
:01:35. > :01:39.frustrating. We had a very poor start. And we lost out to Ferrari.
:01:39. > :01:48.But we were not as quick. Even if I was ahead, I would really have
:01:48. > :01:52.struggled. And the guys were just asking me to stay out longer. This
:01:52. > :01:58.is all I can do. I was pushing all the way but I was really struggling
:01:58. > :02:02.with my tyres. It seems like we have taken one step backwards this
:02:02. > :02:09.weekend. In terms of performance. Or the others have taken one step
:02:09. > :02:16.forward. To be able to finish in 4th place, still some good points.
:02:16. > :02:25.I cannot complain. Where do you think your car is lacking? Were
:02:25. > :02:29.when you ask for improvements at Silverstone? Downforce. We have had
:02:29. > :02:33.upgrades in the front wing, for example, but we have been
:02:33. > :02:40.struggling with rear downforce. In the next race we will be really
:02:41. > :02:46.struggling. Once we lose the engine map. We might see some differences.
:02:46. > :02:50.You are quite interested by what you said? My hearing isn't as good
:02:50. > :02:59.as it used to be but did he say he thinks he might lose out further in
:02:59. > :03:03.the next race? The system is cold blowing. Contrary to what people
:03:03. > :03:07.thought, it would be disappointing to see McClaren drop back even
:03:07. > :03:16.further at Silverstone. This circuit is all about straight lines
:03:16. > :03:21.and maximum speed. Clearly, the car was not working with that. Engine
:03:21. > :03:27.mapping? What is he talking about? That has been the focal point of
:03:27. > :03:33.this weekend, they are not allowed to change that in the qualifying.
:03:33. > :03:39.Actually, the people that know the regulations believed that the big
:03:39. > :03:43.game that Red Bull had... What is engine mapping?! Making the engine
:03:43. > :03:48.fluctuate up and down in a given situation. The nice thing about
:03:49. > :03:56.Lewis Hamilton, it was a tough couple of weeks but he is still not
:03:56. > :04:02.scared to have a go, particularly against the world champion. He has
:04:02. > :04:07.been criticised, we heard the somewhat effort of an apology by
:04:07. > :04:11.Niki Lauda. But nobody wants to see him change. That was so swift, so
:04:11. > :04:15.clean. Emphatic. Never any question he was not going to go past and
:04:15. > :04:23.that is what I want to see. There was more overtaking than we have
:04:23. > :04:27.seen here in the past but it was not exciting? I think we have to
:04:27. > :04:31.take note of what a great start to the grand prix season we had and it
:04:31. > :04:34.was inevitable that one of them would not be quite as exciting.
:04:34. > :04:40.Especially with all other cars going out after normal qualifying.
:04:40. > :04:45.And the fastest car at the front. Ers did help with some but it did
:04:45. > :04:49.not seem to be as clear at creating opportunities. We have been spoiled
:04:49. > :04:53.so far. And a couple of books ago in Canada, Jensen Button was the
:04:53. > :04:58.centre of attention but it was not the race he hoped for today. He
:04:58. > :05:04.lost it right from the start. have heard about the start that
:05:04. > :05:14.they made. This is another one. He is battling from the back foot
:05:14. > :05:20.straight away. He loses out, Rosberg coming round. What can that
:05:20. > :05:24.be? Have they got fundamentally less grip available? It isn't
:05:24. > :05:28.downforce of the line. Maybe something else? It is compromising
:05:28. > :05:33.the way that they use their tyres. That was surprising. In the past,
:05:33. > :05:39.McLaren have made good starts. Jensen Button finishes in 6th
:05:39. > :05:45.place... Word you think you struggled most? With the Kers
:05:45. > :05:50.system or the start? At the start it was not perfect. In the way it
:05:50. > :05:56.was the only fun part, getting past him to turn number two. Apart from
:05:56. > :06:02.that, it was not the most exciting race, was it? From your point of
:06:02. > :06:06.view? I did not see another car for the whole race. I did not have a
:06:06. > :06:10.very good balance. I had a lot of Winston, which I was struggling
:06:10. > :06:18.with throughout. And then I had because cistern filling halfway
:06:18. > :06:24.through, which is a lot of lap time for us, we have a good system. --
:06:24. > :06:30.of the Kers system. Even so, the pace was not there. To finish with
:06:30. > :06:34.those issues was not so bad. But we need good upgrades. We need to get
:06:34. > :06:40.our heads down and improve the car, the package, aerodynamics, we need
:06:40. > :06:44.to improve for Silverstone. We are not moving forward. That is what we
:06:44. > :06:52.need to concentrate on. Lewis Hamilton echoed that. For
:06:52. > :06:58.aerodynamics? I think so. We need to take risks. Behind us, there is
:06:58. > :07:03.a big gap. In this race, anyway, to the Mercedes and Ferrari, they are
:07:03. > :07:10.in front and Red Bull is miles away. We need a lot of lap time and I do
:07:10. > :07:16.not think these new regulation changes in terms of the diffuser
:07:16. > :07:21.bulls will have a lot of impact. Hopefully we will gain more than
:07:21. > :07:25.Red Bull but I don't know. Thank you. And that is the idea of just
:07:25. > :07:29.how complicated it can be, not even the drivers know if the new changes
:07:29. > :07:33.will help or hinder. There is a clear message from Lewis Hamilton
:07:33. > :07:40.and Jenson Button to their team. Bring is more aerodynamics, bring
:07:40. > :07:43.us a faster car. McLaren are one of the teams from pre-season testing
:07:43. > :07:47.until what they delivered in the first race, they made a massive
:07:47. > :07:50.step forward and they are trying to unleash that next step forward. To
:07:50. > :07:56.be in a position where they can qualify in the front row and
:07:56. > :07:59.challenge. At the moment, they seem to be lagging behind. The big
:07:59. > :08:04.problem with McLaren is they came here full of expectations, the
:08:04. > :08:08.front wing and the rear wing, and they have to go away from here and
:08:08. > :08:13.rethink and rework this. It did not give them any advantage, it lost in
:08:13. > :08:18.time. The rear wing helped slightly when Jensen Button was having a go
:08:18. > :08:26.at Nico Rosberg. He finished in front of him. This was incredible,
:08:26. > :08:32.there was no DRS. He had massive speed. He was very lucky, it looked
:08:33. > :08:37.like Rosberg went early on to the brakes. He sets up for the shot and
:08:37. > :08:40.then Rosberg was so early on the brakes that Jensen Button's cat-
:08:40. > :08:44.like reactions not only got him down the inside but he fully passed
:08:44. > :08:49.them by the time we got to the apex. There has to be a question-mark
:08:49. > :08:54.over the way he handled that corner, he left to big of a gap and he did
:08:54. > :08:58.not make any effort to stop them. I would criticise my driver if he did
:08:58. > :09:03.that, to be honest. I did not think it was strong enough defence.
:09:03. > :09:09.Jensen Button brave on the brakes or was Nico Rosberg being nervous?
:09:09. > :09:13.He was early. Jensen Button went for the inside. It did look like
:09:13. > :09:17.Nico Rosberg was early on the brakes, he was able to be on the
:09:17. > :09:20.dirty line and still make the corner without locking up. You
:09:20. > :09:26.would take a driver away after the race and talk to them about what
:09:26. > :09:30.happened? He gave up one point, he could have fought harder for that,
:09:30. > :09:36.the system is so tight after Red Bull that you must say, Mercedes
:09:36. > :09:41.needs as bigger shot in the arm as anybody and if Nico Rosberg can up
:09:41. > :09:46.their game... If drivers are going to defend so clumsily, like that,
:09:46. > :09:49.then you would have to talk to him and say, come on, we are in this
:09:49. > :09:54.together, surely you could have put a better fight up against that
:09:54. > :10:00.corner? I bet you wish you had driven for Eddie Jordan? There was
:10:00. > :10:04.nothing wrong with what I said! is your point of view. It is
:10:04. > :10:09.absolutely fine for individuals to go at it. I'm just glad I have
:10:09. > :10:12.never driven for you! You were a tough bus and one man who did start
:10:12. > :10:18.his career with Eddie Jordan was Michael Schumacher and he isn't
:10:18. > :10:23.scared to go for overtakes. It all got tasty. As he said, every time
:10:23. > :10:29.you see the replay, you are worried about what you will see next?
:10:29. > :10:37.a contrast to Canada. Brilliant driving, right on the white line. I
:10:37. > :10:40.have to see that again. It was a little bit clumsy. He is on the
:10:40. > :10:44.inside, he is entitled to be there but there was always going to be
:10:44. > :10:48.that closing gap and you have to either get off the brakes and put
:10:48. > :10:52.yourself into the position... Watch this, he is over the white line.
:10:52. > :10:56.Tactically, that could have been looked at. I just be to refresh my
:10:56. > :11:00.memory as to whether the wheel has to be completely over or if it is
:11:00. > :11:04.just touching. The Beagle, the gap is closing, Michael is regretting
:11:04. > :11:14.that he is on the inside and he tries to get on the brakes and he
:11:14. > :11:19.to have a chat with Michael Schumacher, that was probably worse
:11:19. > :11:26.than Nico Rosberg! I reckon he is just about... That would not be
:11:26. > :11:34.given as a goal, I am saying that. Although I would have him out, what
:11:34. > :11:38.do you think? I am not show Show! Let's hear from Michael Schumacher.
:11:38. > :11:46.My car, some are pure race for us. After the front wing, we did not
:11:46. > :11:51.see so much of the on television. No? What a surprise! I'm not of my
:11:51. > :11:57.front wing, that was my own problem. I tried to keep my position with
:11:57. > :12:01.Petrov, I wanted to stay in front of them, but I simply could not
:12:01. > :12:06.stop at one point any more. I lock the front tyres and slide it into
:12:06. > :12:11.them and lost my front wing. Then the race was pretty much done. I
:12:11. > :12:15.gaze the pace would have been OK for 7th or 8th. That would have
:12:15. > :12:19.been the maximum we could have got. When you are driving around, what
:12:19. > :12:25.are you thinking? Are you just try to keep out of people's ways, using
:12:25. > :12:29.it as a test? What goes on? First of all, you just go maximum and try
:12:29. > :12:35.to recuperate as much as you can. You never know what will happen.
:12:35. > :12:40.Our speed was not too bad to catch up quite a few Mike Barker's --
:12:41. > :12:44.quite a few back markers. But the problem was that the guys were
:12:44. > :12:49.starting on prime tyres, so that meant they had the option tyres
:12:49. > :12:53.when I was approaching them. The difference of the tyres was to be
:12:53. > :12:57.to make any further move forward. Thanks, Michael. You are welcome.
:12:57. > :13:03.It must be so frustrating for the drivers. Just when they are feeling
:13:03. > :13:08.good, like Michael after Canada, you pay the price if you do not get
:13:08. > :13:12.it right in the lap one. This is an exercise in getting every corner of
:13:13. > :13:17.every lap perfect. I think that is what we saw from Sebastian Vettel
:13:17. > :13:22.up front. We do not see many mistakes from Fernando Alonso. Mark
:13:22. > :13:27.made one little mistake, running wide on Pittendrigh. Otherwise,
:13:27. > :13:30.they are all taking the boxes around the racetrack. You're always
:13:30. > :13:35.going to be on the back foot if you have to come in for another pit-
:13:35. > :13:39.stop. It is a bit unfair on Pirelli to blame them. What was the
:13:39. > :13:44.downfall of Michael today was track position. He should have given way
:13:44. > :13:49.to the faster car. For me, I think it was just silly. You should not
:13:49. > :13:53.have lost his front wing, and he will recognise that. Is it an easy
:13:53. > :14:00.excuse for the driver's first Mark blame the tyres. He is a racing
:14:00. > :14:04.driver, you should ask him. They have a gift for finding the best
:14:05. > :14:09.excuses at any given time. All racing drivers are the same, they
:14:09. > :14:12.love excuses, it is never them, always something else. Michael
:14:12. > :14:18.Schumacher made a mistake in that corner. They are entitled to make a
:14:18. > :14:22.mistake, but do not blame the tyres. One man who was not making any
:14:22. > :14:25.excuses is Alguersuari. We spoke to him yesterday ahead of qualifying.
:14:25. > :14:31.He had a great qualifying session. He struggled in qualifying, I
:14:31. > :14:36.should say, but had a great race. This is his best result in Formula
:14:36. > :14:41.One, A. Yes, a timely result. He seemed pretty chilled when you
:14:41. > :14:49.spoke to them about his season. None the less, the drivers in that
:14:49. > :14:53.team are under pressure. There are teams -- drivers being lined up as
:14:53. > :14:59.the next Red Bull young drivers. One of the skies will be popping
:14:59. > :15:03.out of the system. It was a big result for Alguersuari. We spoke to
:15:03. > :15:09.his father here, he is active and involved. He is doing a good PR job
:15:09. > :15:14.for his son. It was what happens on the track that matters. This was a
:15:14. > :15:17.strong result. It was not easy to go and do the laps that he did. He
:15:17. > :15:23.is the young driver with a huge amount of talent, and he has got a
:15:23. > :15:26.lot to offer Formula One. We can hear from him now. He has fallen
:15:26. > :15:31.out in the first part of qualifying previously but finished in the
:15:31. > :15:36.Points For the last two races. He will be smiling. A great result in
:15:36. > :15:40.front of your home fans. How are you feeling? Very good, really good,
:15:40. > :15:44.because Valencia is my second home town, and I could not do it in
:15:44. > :15:52.Barcelona. We did a good race, but the consistency was not key. Here
:15:52. > :15:55.it was. The brakes that we had in the car were very important. To
:15:55. > :15:59.show this race performance and consistency was very good. There
:15:59. > :16:04.has been speculation about you and your seat. You feel you are having
:16:04. > :16:08.to fight to show your talents? Absolutely, I am here because I
:16:08. > :16:14.enjoy Formula One, I enjoy driving. I think I'm doing a good job, I
:16:14. > :16:17.think I am learning a lot, and there is still to come. I do not
:16:17. > :16:23.think my future is under question. I don't care. To be honest, I want
:16:23. > :16:28.to enjoy the present a Formula One. I do my very best job race after
:16:28. > :16:33.race, and I think we will have some points. In life, problems exist,
:16:33. > :16:38.and problems are always in life, so you are always needing to push to
:16:38. > :16:42.recover the problems, needing to push to evaluate yourself and go
:16:42. > :16:45.one with a progression. I think we are doing a good job, because we
:16:45. > :16:50.are covering the pace that we did not have at the beginning of the
:16:50. > :16:54.year. We are progressing. It is not just about the results today. You
:16:54. > :16:59.understand the car, the tyres. The engineers know and understand
:16:59. > :17:04.better the car and help you improve your performance. It is Formula One,
:17:04. > :17:06.it takes time. It is work and work and work. You might enjoy your
:17:06. > :17:13.third home race at Silverstone, because he went to school in
:17:13. > :17:16.England. I was in Ipswich at school, and it was a good experience for me.
:17:16. > :17:22.Hopefully we'll get some points at Silverstone, and I will be very
:17:22. > :17:26.happy. Enjoy it, thanks. impressive young man, fast and
:17:26. > :17:33.philosophical. Points for Jaime Alguersuari, but no such luck for
:17:33. > :17:38.Paul di Resta, who was locked in a battle. If you were at the front of
:17:38. > :17:42.it, you picked up a point for tenth place. Four finished in 14th.
:17:42. > :17:49.might not have been the position you wanted, but what a fantastic
:17:49. > :17:54.battle at the end. It was, quite a few cars there! We were definitely
:17:54. > :17:58.compromised by strategy. Those five laps, the tyres, two laps in the
:17:58. > :18:02.first stint, three laps on the third stint. When the tyres are
:18:02. > :18:06.like that, you are losing 2.5 seconds per lap, and that
:18:06. > :18:11.compromised the race. There was a bit of confusion. When we were due
:18:11. > :18:16.to come in, Adrian came in. We had to let Sebastian come by when he
:18:16. > :18:21.was lapping us. I am not sure we would have quite finished... May
:18:21. > :18:25.the 10th, probably 11th. You get difficult races, but it was all
:18:25. > :18:30.very tight, and that is what made a small difference to getting at
:18:30. > :18:34.there. The first race that you have been trying to get past people but
:18:34. > :18:39.constantly looking in your mirrors because 24 cars finished here, and
:18:39. > :18:42.traffic is a big problem at this circuit. It was a big problem. DRS
:18:42. > :18:48.did not seem as effective as I thought it would be. A few times I
:18:48. > :18:52.got in his own but nothing really. -- in the zone. I did not get
:18:52. > :18:56.overtaken, so I suppose it is positive from that. It was a
:18:56. > :19:01.difficult weekend, losing Friday. That is crucial, to make the car
:19:01. > :19:07.right. I think I was slightly off Adrian's pace but could match it at
:19:07. > :19:11.some point. Unlucky, Paul. If you want more motor sports, MotoGP is
