0:00:07 > 0:00:17season is under way! Lewis Hamilton! He is the master! Again,

0:00:17 > 0:00:17

0:00:17 > 0:02:22Apology for the loss of subtitles for 125 seconds

0:02:22 > 0:02:27Sebastian Vettel. pressure these bands put on

0:02:27 > 0:02:35Sebastian Vettel, the biggest amount comes from just one of man -

0:02:35 > 0:02:42- these fans. His harshest critic is himself. Welcome to the 2011

0:02:42 > 0:02:47German Grand Prix wife from a rather chilly Nurburg. Eddie Jordan,

0:02:47 > 0:02:51not great for the suntan here but this kind of weather gives us great

0:02:51 > 0:02:58racing, we have seen it already this year. I cannot recall wearing

0:02:58 > 0:03:02a coat at a Grand Prix before! This is unbelievable! This is global

0:03:02 > 0:03:11cooling at its greatest. And that coat is such a relaxing colour,

0:03:11 > 0:03:17which is rare for you! It feels about 11 degrees cooler than 11

0:03:17 > 0:03:22degrees. Red Bull arrived here having not been beaten at the last

0:03:22 > 0:03:27race, that is inspirational. wants to win this Grand Prix and it

0:03:27 > 0:03:32is his home Grand Prix. He would have come here when he was young

0:03:32 > 0:03:35and is highly motivated to get a victory. The fans have to disappear

0:03:35 > 0:03:41out of the pit lane because before too long, the cars will make their

0:03:41 > 0:03:44way out to the grid. A lot coming your way. A look at the calendar

0:03:44 > 0:03:48and the races that have brought us here and today is not just a chance

0:03:48 > 0:03:53for Ferrari to get back to back wins and four Red Bull to get back

0:03:53 > 0:03:58to winning ways, today is also about the fact that after today, we

0:03:58 > 0:04:02are over halfway through the season. Nine races left including the

0:04:02 > 0:04:12inaugural Indian Grand Prix. But the drivers are only thinking about

0:04:12 > 0:04:43

0:04:43 > 0:04:48today and getting in here to work, it is in house along with the rest

0:04:48 > 0:04:51of the drivers. As we reach the halfway stage, now is time to look

0:04:51 > 0:04:59at the standings and workout where we are looking ahead to the rest of

0:04:59 > 0:05:03the year. Four race wins for Jason button -- for Jenson Button and

0:05:03 > 0:05:08Lewis Hamilton, what approach to their team need this year? They

0:05:08 > 0:05:13have to be very aggressive. They should go with a tiger policy from

0:05:13 > 0:05:18now, because Sebastian has dominated the first half. They have

0:05:18 > 0:05:26nothing to lose at this stage for McLaren. They have to go for every

0:05:26 > 0:05:31little opportunity. Fernando Alonso is in third, four wins, six per

0:05:31 > 0:05:36Jims in 2010, he now needs a stronger and to 2011 if he wants

0:05:36 > 0:05:41that title. It is confusing why he came on strong towards the middle

0:05:41 > 0:05:45of the year, we saw that last season and offer back at

0:05:45 > 0:05:49Silverstone. What goes on in the winter for the development of the

0:05:50 > 0:05:54car? Eddie is right about the strategy for McLaren, it has to be

0:05:54 > 0:05:58very aggressive to stand a chance of winning this Championship.

0:05:58 > 0:06:03the same applies to Mark Webber, second at the moment. That is good

0:06:03 > 0:06:07news for him and great news for Red Bull that their closest rival is

0:06:07 > 0:06:12one of their own. I said at Silverstone, forget the

0:06:12 > 0:06:16constructors' title, it is over. Look forward to an exciting

0:06:16 > 0:06:21Drivers' Championship because anyone who dreams about Red Bull...

0:06:21 > 0:06:26They have two exceptional drivers, magic set up, are unbeatable!

0:06:26 > 0:06:30is why it Eddie things the Constructors' Championship is over,

0:06:30 > 0:06:36328 points for Red Bull who have had a stunning start to the years.

0:06:36 > 0:06:41That is the title, what about the grid for today? Only three times in

0:06:41 > 0:06:46the past 16 seasons has the ball so to have gone on to take a win here.

0:06:46 > 0:06:51Will that affect qualifying yesterday? Not a bit of it.

0:06:51 > 0:06:56Sebastian Vettel has dominated qualifying this season but could he

0:06:56 > 0:06:59do it in front of his home fans? The other five German drivers were

0:06:59 > 0:07:05also hoping to please their followers but somebody was bound to

0:07:05 > 0:07:11be disappointed. The first German out was Timo Glock who made his

0:07:11 > 0:07:17thoughts clear to his Virgin team while still driving. It is just so

0:07:17 > 0:07:21difficult to drive at the moment. Paul di Resta has at qualified his

0:07:21 > 0:07:31team-mate 7-3 this season but yesterday, Adrian Sutil was too

0:07:31 > 0:07:32

0:07:32 > 0:07:36quick. Force India have taken a decision and I need to deal with it.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40It has done me damage over the weekend but I need to put my head

0:07:41 > 0:07:44down and go for it in the race. Ferrari and Fernando Alonso had

0:07:44 > 0:07:48been fighting at the front all weekend and looked likely to

0:07:48 > 0:07:55challenge for pole position. But far from being disappointed, Alonso

0:07:55 > 0:07:59said he was where he was expected. I think the practice is practice

0:07:59 > 0:08:04and qualifying is when everyone shows potential. Mixed fortunes for

0:08:04 > 0:08:08McLaren this weekend. Jenson Button had to pull out of his final lap

0:08:08 > 0:08:13and Stott 7th tomorrow. The former World Champion was wondering where

0:08:13 > 0:08:22his speed had gone. Strangely cannot find the grip. Very

0:08:22 > 0:08:25surprising also to be one second behind Lewis, it is not right.

0:08:25 > 0:08:30Lewis had no shortage of speed and despite his concerns at McLaren

0:08:30 > 0:08:36would never be able to challenge Red Bull, he battled hard and ended

0:08:36 > 0:08:40up just off pole position in second place. It was as perfect as I could

0:08:40 > 0:08:45do it, I do not know how I could make it more perfect, it is one of

0:08:45 > 0:08:50the best I have done in the car. Usually by three, your first lap is

0:08:50 > 0:08:56good but to go out again, you go a bit more beyond the limit and go-

0:08:56 > 0:09:01slow on all equal it, but I went four-tenths faster. That left the

0:09:01 > 0:09:07two Red Bulls. One German he would love to win his home Grand Prix and

0:09:07 > 0:09:12on Australian who would not mind spoiling the party. -- An

0:09:12 > 0:09:17Australian. Mark Webber put in an electrifying black, leaving

0:09:17 > 0:09:21Sebastian Vettel having to settle for third place. -- a lecture

0:09:21 > 0:09:26frying lap. I had a tricky day yesterday and was not happy with

0:09:26 > 0:09:36the balance. I was feeling much more comfortable today. Very happy

0:09:36 > 0:09:39with my last blind macro. We made a change. The engineers did a

0:09:39 > 0:09:45sensational job and the call is for them because I would not have got

0:09:45 > 0:09:51it without them. -- the pole position. Mark Webber start at the

0:09:51 > 0:10:01front of the grid for the first -- for the third time this year. The

0:10:01 > 0:10:03

0:10:03 > 0:10:13Ferraris of fourth and fifth. Vitaly Petrov out-qualified Richard

0:10:13 > 0:10:23

0:10:23 > 0:10:28place. A difficult day at the office for

0:10:28 > 0:10:32the two men at the back of the grid but what an incredible lap for

0:10:33 > 0:10:36Lewis Hamilton who is on the front row of the grid. We are with the

0:10:36 > 0:10:40Team Principal, where did that speed come from? Was it an

0:10:40 > 0:10:46incredible lap or had she been cheeky all weekend? You did not

0:10:46 > 0:10:51show that in practice. It was incredible from Lewis but he was

0:10:51 > 0:10:58growing in confidence during the weekend. It is about confidence and

0:10:58 > 0:11:03getting the tyres in the right place. What a lap! I am confused

0:11:03 > 0:11:08because you do not do that unless you have a great car below you and

0:11:08 > 0:11:15that first sector, he was mighty. So mechanically, the car clearly

0:11:15 > 0:11:20has a fantastic base. What is the variation from race to race? Again,

0:11:20 > 0:11:25it is clear that in turns of slow speed corners, the car is strong.

0:11:25 > 0:11:30We have lacked a bit in high-speed Connors -- corners compared to Red

0:11:30 > 0:11:34Bull but we have been working hard. Part of this exhaust blowing

0:11:34 > 0:11:38phenomena it is keeping your foot in during the corners and you build

0:11:38 > 0:11:43in confidence. We saw that with Lewis yesterday and I am sure

0:11:43 > 0:11:49Jenson Button will during this race. If ever you were to describe

0:11:49 > 0:11:53perfect conditions for McLaren, you work -- you have them today. Can

0:11:54 > 0:11:58you capitalise on that and win the race? We can win the race and also

0:11:58 > 0:12:03get it horribly wrong! That is the issue in these conditions. We are

0:12:03 > 0:12:08not complaining, I think it will be an exciting race. But we are aware

0:12:08 > 0:12:13it could go wrong, but hopefully we'll get it right. You can maybe

0:12:13 > 0:12:18wicket to your advantage today. What is the weather telling you?

0:12:18 > 0:12:24There is a weather front here so it will be wet during this race. I

0:12:24 > 0:12:30think it will be damp for most of it. If they get on to the auction

0:12:30 > 0:12:37tyres, I do not know, I suspect they will start on the

0:12:37 > 0:12:42intermediates. -- the option tyres. What about a man who will be busy

0:12:42 > 0:12:46in 19th on the grid? He is one of than German contingent and has big

0:12:46 > 0:12:53news. Joining me is Timo Glock, up what

0:12:53 > 0:12:58is your good news? I just made it official today in my home Grand

0:12:58 > 0:13:07Prix I am staying with the team for another couple of years. Working

0:13:07 > 0:13:12for a big project, 2014. So you are signed until the end of 2014?

0:13:12 > 0:13:15can't at comment on that! When we listened to your radio yesterday,

0:13:15 > 0:13:21are you did not sound very happy and said the team have made a life

0:13:21 > 0:13:25difficult. You guys just got it wrong. I had a funny weekend with

0:13:26 > 0:13:33my engineers and said as a joke to my engineers, you are making my

0:13:33 > 0:13:38life difficult! No problem against the team or the car, we just had to

0:13:38 > 0:13:44-- two difficult qualifying races where we found the car difficult to

0:13:44 > 0:13:49drive in heavy wind conditions. That just made me make a joke to my

0:13:49 > 0:13:53engineers. But I am not getting this German summer, I have gone for

0:13:53 > 0:14:00it really a strategy, what is happening? How is the weather in

0:14:00 > 0:14:05England? Not much better. It is really strange. I had a Formula

0:14:05 > 0:14:10Three race in May 2002 here and had to cancel it because it was snowing,

0:14:10 > 0:14:15so you never know up here. I have my fireproof underwear up ready

0:14:15 > 0:14:21because it is too cold! What are we expecting this afternoon, is rain

0:14:21 > 0:14:25forecast? I think that will come, but it will be an on and off

0:14:25 > 0:14:30situation. The main problem will be the temperatures to get the tyres

0:14:30 > 0:14:37working. We have to see what we can do at let's hope for an interesting

0:14:37 > 0:14:44race. Great news, have a great day. Snow in May, that gives you an idea

0:14:44 > 0:14:48of the climate we have here in the Eifel Mountains. It would not

0:14:48 > 0:14:51surprise us if it started snowing. When Timo Glock made his

0:14:51 > 0:14:55announcement on the radio yesterday that his team were making it

0:14:55 > 0:15:05difficult for him, which is difficult to hear as it raced

0:15:05 > 0:15:08

0:15:08 > 0:15:15engineer, did not sound like a joke, heard it and I was a team boss I

0:15:15 > 0:15:21would say, listen, never, ever say thing like that which is in public

0:15:21 > 0:15:27on the radio. We're a family and we're greater as a unit. Never

0:15:27 > 0:15:33split an opportunity for people to ridicule us. It was a hopeless

0:15:33 > 0:15:39comment. Difficult to argue with that. Would the team say let's

0:15:39 > 0:15:44think of a line to spin. Yes, you can't say things on the radio. I

0:15:44 > 0:15:51remember at McLaren we had several pit stops and I said it was like, I

0:15:51 > 0:15:55can't remember the comment now. Coe stone cops stuff. We kept --

0:15:55 > 0:16:02Keystone Cops stuff. Ron took me in and said you are representing the

0:16:02 > 0:16:07team and it is best to say nothing. Ron Dennis scared him so much, he

0:16:07 > 0:16:12blanked from it his mind. Now a man who has had a difficult start to

0:16:12 > 0:16:15the year but is turning thing around, Fernando Alonso. He led

0:16:15 > 0:16:21more laps in Silverstone than in the entire rest of the season

0:16:21 > 0:16:27combined. Is the greatest magician of them all about to pull a rabbit

0:16:27 > 0:16:35out of hat. Is it nice to be sitting here as the last winner of

0:16:35 > 0:16:41a Grand Prix? It is nice, for the team to recover some of the

0:16:41 > 0:16:46difficult time we had in the Championship. We were out of podium

0:16:46 > 0:16:51in the first couple of races and to win the Silverstone Grand Prix was

0:16:51 > 0:16:57good. Is it something we have to accept that Ferrari get off to a

0:16:57 > 0:17:02slow start? I think this year, last year it was maybe more difficult,

0:17:02 > 0:17:08because it was the first year for me in Ferrari and 2009 was not

0:17:08 > 0:17:13great for the team. So this year it is different. The wind tunnel

0:17:13 > 0:17:19problems that we had at the winter slowed us in the first couple of

0:17:19 > 0:17:22races. But on both occasions we start losing points at the

0:17:22 > 0:17:26beginning of the year. We need to improve that part of the

0:17:26 > 0:17:31Championship. You wouldn't sign for team that started its Championship

0:17:31 > 0:17:36hopes half way through the season? Of course, we want to fight every

0:17:36 > 0:17:40year. We race and the first half of the season is a key part of the

0:17:40 > 0:17:47Championship. So it is something that for sure we will improve in

0:17:47 > 0:17:51the next couple of years. I think in Ferrari sooner or later success

0:17:51 > 0:17:58will come. It is a great team and they have a huge potential to do

0:17:58 > 0:18:05well. Do you think Sebastian Vettel will win it? At the moment it is

0:18:05 > 0:18:11difficult to think that anyone can recover the gap. To be real I tick,

0:18:11 > 0:18:17Sebastian Vettel has had a fantastic first half of season, the

0:18:17 > 0:18:21normal second part of the Championship is easy for him. But

0:18:21 > 0:18:25anything can happen. What are your hopes here? It is part of

0:18:25 > 0:18:30Championship which is important x before the August break we want to

0:18:30 > 0:18:34have the maximum points available in this July. In Silverstone we did

0:18:34 > 0:18:38well and we need maximum points in the next two races. We're

0:18:38 > 0:18:43optimistic, but you never know. Ferrari made some magic in

0:18:43 > 0:18:48Silverstone. I understand you do card tricks. Before you drive in a

0:18:48 > 0:18:54race? Yeah on Sunday morning, if I have a new trick or something I go

0:18:54 > 0:19:01in the garage with the guys and play a bit to make some things

0:19:01 > 0:19:09before the race. Can you show snus We will try. There is only three

0:19:09 > 0:19:19cards. It is too difficult. We have three cards. Very easy. We have ten

0:19:19 > 0:19:25of hearts. And we have one ace of hearts. So the ace is here. If I go

0:19:25 > 0:19:30down with the ace of hearts, it is down. No, it is the 10. All in the

0:19:30 > 0:19:37top or the middle will be the ace. On the top there is a ten. In the

0:19:37 > 0:19:42middle you want to see? Is the 10. So there are too many 10s. Why? It

0:19:42 > 0:19:47is always on the bottom. Because logically in the middle and on the

0:19:47 > 0:19:53top is the two 10s. Be careful because on the top sometimes is the

0:19:53 > 0:19:58aiss and in the middle is the ace. So many aces now. You think I'm

0:19:58 > 0:20:04playing with more than three cards? No, three cards always. One was the

0:20:04 > 0:20:1310, one was the ace. And I gave you the last opportunity. Which one was

0:20:13 > 0:20:18the third one? The 1 of hearts. joker. That is very good. JAKE

0:20:18 > 0:20:23HUMPHREY: He is not just a pretty face. How much would he love to be

0:20:23 > 0:20:27the joker in the pack. Just over half an hour to the start of race.

0:20:27 > 0:20:32Stefano Domenicali has joined us. You won the race from third a

0:20:33 > 0:20:41couple of weeks ago, explain how you're aiming to win this race from

0:20:41 > 0:20:48fourth on the grid with Fer doe? - Fernando. The conditions today are

0:20:48 > 0:20:53tricky. We don't like this kind of temperature. We do. I know. That is

0:20:53 > 0:20:58great for the show. We have seen in Silverstone when there was quite...

0:20:58 > 0:21:01A difficult condition at the beginning, we saw McLaren fast and

0:21:01 > 0:21:06Red Bull did better than us. That is the picture that I had in mind

0:21:06 > 0:21:12in the last race. Here it seems that another shower should come. We

0:21:12 > 0:21:17will see. What sort of time? sure it will be around 2 o'clock,

0:21:17 > 0:21:22as always. Bearing in mind your win in Silverstone, why on earth would

0:21:22 > 0:21:27Ferrari agree to go back to the Valencia set up in the software?

0:21:27 > 0:21:30is not a problem of agreeing. I don't know. It must be agreed.

0:21:30 > 0:21:35don't know, Eddie, no one knows exactly what is the performance

0:21:35 > 0:21:41with that kind of thing. Everyone is guessing from one second to one

0:21:41 > 0:21:45tenths to nothing. And the FAI could in any case enforce what they

0:21:45 > 0:21:48want with a TD and if they have new evidence, that is different. This

0:21:48 > 0:21:52is something behind and something that I don't want to hear anyone

0:21:52 > 0:21:57have in their mind as an excuse. I want the people to work hard and

0:21:57 > 0:22:03for me the best thing that I saw yesterday for example during the

0:22:03 > 0:22:07weekend up to now I see a car that is, was quite good in the fast

0:22:07 > 0:22:11corner. That was really a very difficult point for us that. Means

0:22:11 > 0:22:19we have to improve the level of our performance. Not enough, because

0:22:19 > 0:22:23not that strong. But let's see. What is clear is how relaxed

0:22:23 > 0:22:29Fernando is. The guy's won a couple of Championships and hungry for

0:22:29 > 0:22:34more success. Where does he rate in the overall hierarchy of great

0:22:34 > 0:22:37drivers at Ferrari? To be honest, I see him very motivated. He wants to

0:22:37 > 0:22:42win us with. Because he understands that Ferrari mean something

0:22:42 > 0:22:46different. But you can see that he has the same approach of Michael.

0:22:46 > 0:22:51He is living with the team. He is pushing hard everyone. But in a

0:22:51 > 0:22:56constructive way. That is for ne most important thing. Thank you. We

0:22:56 > 0:23:02can see him climbing in the car. How much would he love to win on

0:23:02 > 0:23:07the 60th anniversary of Ferrari winning on the Nordschleife. Glad

0:23:07 > 0:23:10you're under cover there. Stefano Domenicali is in a nice seat. He

0:23:11 > 0:23:20won't be getting rained on. But the fans will be. But that does not

0:23:21 > 0:23:25

0:23:25 > 0:23:35bother them one jot. They love their motor sport here. Come on Red

0:23:35 > 0:23:39

0:23:39 > 0:23:43Bull. OK it may not be range at the moment. But in 2007 it was not

0:23:43 > 0:23:49raining at the start of raist a then it went wild. You were driving

0:23:49 > 0:23:53in this and finished fifth. What was it like driving. You can see

0:23:53 > 0:23:58Lewis Hamilton's vizibilities. can see Jenson Button taking a one

0:23:58 > 0:24:03way ticket to the bar yes. Aquaplaning here is terrible. Lewis

0:24:03 > 0:24:08Hamilton was able to rejoin the race and we had the scary moment

0:24:08 > 0:24:13where we had a car striking the recovery vehicle that was in there

0:24:13 > 0:24:18to move the cars. In is in situation it is undrivable. You can

0:24:18 > 0:24:22see it coming around there, almost taking out the safety car and

0:24:22 > 0:24:27ending next to the tractor. you're wondering whether it is as

0:24:27 > 0:24:33difficult when it is not raining hard, well we can can tell you it

0:24:33 > 0:24:39is. This is a shot from earlier. David Coulthard and Inzamam-ul-Haq.

0:24:39 > 0:24:47What is going on. That is -- and Mika Hakkinen. What is going on

0:24:47 > 0:24:54here. That is why I don't drive any more. Was that team orders? I think

0:24:54 > 0:25:02Ron Dennis had given an instruction. How much caved Coulthard -- David

0:25:02 > 0:25:07cowl that's right could have cost him. We asked Mercedes how much are

0:25:07 > 0:25:11those cars. They said irreplaceable and priceless. You can hear it has

0:25:11 > 0:25:21got loud. The man who was on pole position is Mark Webber. How much

0:25:21 > 0:25:25

0:25:25 > 0:25:29would he love to create what happened here two years ago. -- re-

0:25:29 > 0:25:39create. It was pole position at the German Grand Prix and now it is

0:25:39 > 0:25:40

0:25:40 > 0:25:49going to be victory for Mark Webber. His first in Formula One. Yeah! Yes,

0:25:49 > 0:25:53yes, yes, yes! That two years has flown by? Yes to be you know

0:25:53 > 0:25:57remember my first victory here was unique and lots of things have

0:25:57 > 0:26:02happened in that two years. time you have had a pole position

0:26:02 > 0:26:08this year. It has not played out the way you would have hoped.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11That's right. Both times well Fernando got a cracking start in

0:26:11 > 0:26:17bars Bas. I have got the luxury of looking at both their start and

0:26:17 > 0:26:22working out if I could do a better job. The starts were not too bad in

0:26:22 > 0:26:28Barcelona and in Silverstone, it is not like I'm sitting there

0:26:28 > 0:26:33nerveless. I'm relaxed and just want to get into it. But I will

0:26:33 > 0:26:40have other opportunities to get into pole. Poles are tough and you

0:26:40 > 0:26:45have got to be on top of your game. Is there an elements your team mate

0:26:46 > 0:26:50has had a wit of -- bit of luck. Or this a clutching at straws. Well he

0:26:50 > 0:26:54has driven well. But it's... You know you make your own don't you?

0:26:54 > 0:27:00You make your own luck. I think that you know it won't go forever.

0:27:00 > 0:27:05It goes like this. He has had a great start to the season. OK he

0:27:05 > 0:27:11wins 15 races, all of us will say hats off. But you're liing to say

0:27:11 > 0:27:16Fernando and I wouldn't want to see Seb have a retirement. And for that

0:27:16 > 0:27:21we need him to have some misfor chun. But he is a -- misfortune.

0:27:21 > 0:27:27But he is a class acts. You finish two inches off his gear box, that

0:27:27 > 0:27:33is a positive. At Silverstone, we heard quotes from the team saying

0:27:33 > 0:27:37we don't win by playing games like Ferrari. We won the Red Bull way,

0:27:37 > 0:27:42meaning no team orders. Can we take it there has been a change in team

0:27:42 > 0:27:48policy? I don't think. Because we had the cars close to each other at

0:27:48 > 0:27:52the end of the Grand Prix. Mark you need to main feign the gap. That

0:27:52 > 0:27:57for me wasn't good to here and I pushed hard and I was comfortable

0:27:57 > 0:28:02with that. We have had a chat about it. Christian is running the team.

0:28:02 > 0:28:06That is his position. He is paid to run the team in the best way.

0:28:06 > 0:28:10you understand if you had hit each other that would have cost you

0:28:10 > 0:28:15point and you're still second and Seb has increased his lead. So it

0:28:15 > 0:28:20was the perfect team result? Yes it was. But I think that is the only

0:28:20 > 0:28:26down side of having two drivers like we saw last year. Because in

0:28:26 > 0:28:30Turkey we made kagt and one car survived and the other didn't. Once

0:28:30 > 0:28:36every 30 race if two cars hit each other, maybe it is racing. Would

0:28:36 > 0:28:41you prefer it that way? Yes. Do you think what we saw in Silverstone

0:28:41 > 0:28:45and your desire to not necessarily follow team orders to prove you can

0:28:45 > 0:28:50win, does that strengthen your position to stay with Red Bull?

0:28:50 > 0:28:54still talking to the team about next year. There is a huge chance

0:28:54 > 0:28:59that I continue in Formula One and if I continue in Formula One, it

0:28:59 > 0:29:04looks, I'm not talking to anyoneers. What is to be discussed -- no

0:29:04 > 0:29:09anyone else. What is to discuss, they know you're the best driver.

0:29:09 > 0:29:17Surely it is just where do I sign? Yeah. Two wins in two races here

0:29:17 > 0:29:22that would be nice. Oh a few points mate, yeah, see how we go. Thanks.

0:29:22 > 0:29:28A big day for Mark Webber. It is rather loud down here. Nick

0:29:28 > 0:29:33Heidfeld is there rung through pit lane. When you have had four pole

0:29:33 > 0:29:37position and not a single win, what part of your race do you need to

0:29:37 > 0:29:41look at? I know that Mark has looked at the start performance and

0:29:41 > 0:29:46he has not made particularly bad starts. There is nothing in

0:29:46 > 0:29:50whatless doing that is influencing that. You have to rely on different

0:29:50 > 0:29:54aspects of the pull away from the engine, the software and clutch.

0:29:54 > 0:29:59And it is a shorter run this year than in 2009 and they have halfed

0:29:59 > 0:30:04the distance too the run to first corner. So in theory that should

0:30:04 > 0:30:14mean there is less opportunity if he did make a bad start for the

0:30:14 > 0:30:20

0:30:20 > 0:30:24today? -- is Fernando. This is not ideal conditions for Ferrari. I

0:30:24 > 0:30:29think Hamilton is the biggest threat, he is always aggressive and

0:30:29 > 0:30:36very quick and he makes the car work in these conditions. I think

0:30:36 > 0:30:42he could possibly win this race. That is Nick Heidfeld, he start

0:30:42 > 0:30:4711th in this race and he kicked his team-mate out of qualifying. -- he

0:30:47 > 0:30:52starts. Should Mercedes be making their way to the grid? They have

0:30:52 > 0:30:59time and have waited for information. The rain is starting

0:30:59 > 0:31:07to fall so last-minute opportunity to check this car over. That is

0:31:07 > 0:31:10Nico Rosberg, his best ever Grix slot, he start sixth in Mercedes. -

0:31:11 > 0:31:16- Grix slot. They call themselves the national German team, don't

0:31:16 > 0:31:20they? He has for me demonstrated again he is quicker than Michael

0:31:20 > 0:31:25even though they keep talking about who is quicker in that team. But he

0:31:25 > 0:31:29needs to finish on the podium and this is an ideal opportunity

0:31:29 > 0:31:35because from what we are told, it will be variable conditions. Nico

0:31:35 > 0:31:40Rosberg has to grab hold of this and be aggressive in his driving

0:31:40 > 0:31:46and his style. Nico Rosberg has finally decided he is able to

0:31:46 > 0:31:51braved the rain. David, you can now head off to the commentary box. I

0:31:51 > 0:31:57am sure it will be exciting because the rain is now starting to fall as

0:31:57 > 0:32:04the cars make their way to the grid. And Martin is that the great, you

0:32:04 > 0:32:09must recognise the view! This is pole position as it used to

0:32:09 > 0:32:15be. They have moved the grid 240 metres forward. They have halved

0:32:15 > 0:32:20the distance down to the first corner. The cars used to start in

0:32:20 > 0:32:25front of this fresh-air and now that magnificent new grandstand can

0:32:25 > 0:32:28now see what is going on at the start of the race. Cars are coming

0:32:28 > 0:32:34onto the back of the grid and they are doing their final checks here

0:32:34 > 0:32:39and getting ready for the start. We are in the thick of the action, it

0:32:39 > 0:32:46is brilliant! I am going to do this again. I wanted to talk to some of

0:32:46 > 0:32:49the drivers on the back of the grid, up we have not been here for a

0:32:49 > 0:32:53while. Sebastien Buemi, they found an alleged guilt -- and

0:32:53 > 0:32:59irregularity with his fuel after qualifying so he has been penalised

0:32:59 > 0:33:08with a back of the grid start. In the past, cars have been thrown out

0:33:08 > 0:33:12and sent home, it was a small discrepancy of the parameters they

0:33:12 > 0:33:17check, the cars are checked ruthlessly by the FIA after the

0:33:17 > 0:33:23race. We have mechanics from different teams because the drivers

0:33:23 > 0:33:30switch off their engines when they get here. Then they are pushed

0:33:30 > 0:33:36through the pack, a deal set up. A drive it used to be called the

0:33:36 > 0:33:41Whisperer because he would coast through with no engine noise

0:33:41 > 0:33:48terrifying everybody. Felipe Massa is making his way through. It has

0:33:48 > 0:33:53been announced there is a change of climatic conditions from qualifying.

0:33:53 > 0:34:02They are allowed to changed little on the cars. What are they allowed

0:34:02 > 0:34:12to change? I will look in this car here, which is Sebastien Buemi's

0:34:12 > 0:34:13

0:34:13 > 0:34:17Toro Rosso. Where those fans are, this car is only cooled going

0:34:17 > 0:34:25through the air and there are no fans other than what is put on when

0:34:25 > 0:34:32the car is stationary. They can blank off the boil and radiators.

0:34:32 > 0:34:36De gear wing, they cannot put any other features in that, they have

0:34:37 > 0:34:43to use what they used in qualifying yesterday -- the very real wing.

0:34:43 > 0:34:51The problem is how much fuel do they put in for this race? What is

0:34:51 > 0:34:55the race pace going to be? They do not want 10 kilograms of fuel

0:34:55 > 0:35:01because it will cost them seconds per lap to carry that for the 60

0:35:01 > 0:35:07lap race. We have got Sergio Perez making his way down the grid. Can

0:35:07 > 0:35:14we find a driver to talk to? I had no idea it was so exciting back

0:35:14 > 0:35:23here! Who have we got here? Daniel Ricciardo, we will see if we can

0:35:23 > 0:35:29talk to him in a moment. The Australian. This is the Red Bull

0:35:29 > 0:35:35man giving him a message. He is a young Red Bull driver and they have

0:35:35 > 0:35:39decided to put him in this car. We heard Mark Webber saying, it is the

0:35:39 > 0:35:46fastest car and I am a great driver but it does not mean I have signed

0:35:47 > 0:35:55up with them yet. Which I found very interesting. Let's talk to

0:35:55 > 0:36:01Karun Chandhok. You have 30 seconds, can you hold on? They put you in

0:36:02 > 0:36:07the cart off Jarno Trulli and you have used his joker on his gearbox,

0:36:07 > 0:36:14he will love you for that! How are you feeling? When did you last

0:36:14 > 0:36:20start a Grand Prix? Exactly one year ago. How it is the track?

0:36:20 > 0:36:25has just started to rain on the reconnaissance lap. It is 20

0:36:25 > 0:36:32degrees cooler than qualifying so it is pretty hideous. It is 50

0:36:32 > 0:36:37Diouf -- 15 degrees, it would you rather not be dry and warm? I would

0:36:37 > 0:36:43like a nice clean and dry race. The longest I have done is ten laps so

0:36:43 > 0:36:51it would have been nice to do a normal race. But once again, I have

0:36:51 > 0:36:59been given to key cards to play with! Good luck. -- difficult cards

0:36:59 > 0:37:09to play with. Coming past us his Rubens Barrichello as. And we can

0:37:09 > 0:37:13talk to Timo Glock, who has re- signed. How is it? It is cold,

0:37:13 > 0:37:19getting very difficult to get up the temperatures, especially on the

0:37:19 > 0:37:24fuel now. We may see something special, if you never know. So you

0:37:24 > 0:37:29have just signed a new contract for two or three years -- or three

0:37:29 > 0:37:39years, and you must be feeling pretty confident. It is great to

0:37:39 > 0:37:41

0:37:41 > 0:37:47announce it here at my home race. It is positive news and now it is

0:37:47 > 0:37:50down to us for next year. There are a lot of GP 2 drivers coming gone

0:37:50 > 0:37:56and junk guys so I guess you are looking over your shoulder and

0:37:56 > 0:38:02looking ahead? -- young guys. happy with the team and happy to

0:38:02 > 0:38:07stay with them. And now it is starting to rain! So this is an

0:38:07 > 0:38:12opportunity rather than a threat? You have to stay on the track, no

0:38:12 > 0:38:20mistakes and had the others make mistakes and gain from that. -- and

0:38:20 > 0:38:30you have to hope the others. game is changing very quickly! This

0:38:30 > 0:38:31

0:38:31 > 0:38:37is definitely the cart off Kamui Kobayashi. -- the Karloff. And we

0:38:37 > 0:38:46can talk to the Toro Rosso drivers are mine and this is the driver's

0:38:46 > 0:38:51Stewart, eight times a winner. -- the drivers Stewart. Any dramas?

0:38:51 > 0:38:59Everybody has to prepare themselves very well in this weather. A new

0:38:59 > 0:39:07broadcasting on that? No, -- are you broadcasting on that phone? No,

0:39:07 > 0:39:11but my wife keeps me up-to-date! Have you got a quick word for the

0:39:11 > 0:39:16BBC? How was it for you on the formation lap, did you learn

0:39:16 > 0:39:22anything? It is difficult to get front tyre temperature because it

0:39:22 > 0:39:26is very cold and starting to rain, we will see what we will do. From

0:39:26 > 0:39:33these kind of positions, a you keep steaming through into the top 10

0:39:33 > 0:39:38comedy must fancy more of that today? It is a pity -- into the

0:39:38 > 0:39:42top-ten, yet you must fancy more of that today? I feared it is one of

0:39:42 > 0:39:47those races you have to stay on the track because the conditions are

0:39:47 > 0:39:52difficult -- I think it is. What is in your mind now, what are you

0:39:52 > 0:39:57thinking? It will be for intermediates if it keeps raining.

0:39:57 > 0:40:03We will see how the race gets on with the weather. Nobody really

0:40:04 > 0:40:10knows. They do not seem as perturbed by the rain as I thought

0:40:10 > 0:40:17they would, to be honest. I do not know if Sergio Perez is anyway to

0:40:17 > 0:40:22be seen. I imagine he has gone. We are always talking to the drivers

0:40:22 > 0:40:30at the front, at Rubens Barrichello has decided to stay in his car, he

0:40:30 > 0:40:36does not fancy getting wet. It tinted visor, a bit surprised by

0:40:36 > 0:40:45that -- and that is a tinted visor. How is it going, everything could?

0:40:45 > 0:40:50Good luck! -- everything good. He has decided he does not want to get

0:40:50 > 0:40:57wet. And those seats are tailor- made, it is very comfortable.

0:40:57 > 0:41:04Although they do not -- although they do make a bit -- although they

0:41:04 > 0:41:07do hurt a bit when you sit down. Or the tyres are being prepared, so

0:41:07 > 0:41:17many available on the grid because they do not know what they will

0:41:17 > 0:41:21

0:41:22 > 0:41:26need. Underneath, 60 degrees. They bake those. It is such a critical

0:41:26 > 0:41:33decision as to what they decide to put on the car for the start of the

0:41:33 > 0:41:39Grand Prix. That is Kamui Kobayashis. We have already talked

0:41:39 > 0:41:43to the Lotus driver. Most of the drivers are off the grid, it is

0:41:44 > 0:41:49bizarre, I thought we might find every driver back here patiently

0:41:49 > 0:41:54waiting. Jake, it is a good time to go back to you so that I can get up

0:41:54 > 0:42:02to the commentary box. Which is very important! Martin

0:42:02 > 0:42:06braving get on the grid. -- braving it. If we go back through a few

0:42:06 > 0:42:12years of Formula One history, there is a great example at the circuit

0:42:12 > 0:42:17of what you can get right and wrong. In 2006, we had rain in the air but

0:42:17 > 0:42:22not at the start of the race and they made a decision to start on a

0:42:22 > 0:42:28wet tyres and they ended up leading a Grand Prix. That could happen

0:42:28 > 0:42:32today. Absolutely, anything is possible. Of those guys at the back

0:42:32 > 0:42:35of the grid, this is their dream come true because this gives them

0:42:35 > 0:42:41an opportunity where anything can happen and they can come through

0:42:41 > 0:42:44and win. Lewis Hamilton knows he is not far off the pace of the Red

0:42:44 > 0:42:51Bull and maybe has the making of Mark Webber at the start, how will

0:42:51 > 0:42:57he be feeling? He is liking this because still Red Bull of the class

0:42:57 > 0:43:01act and he needs all the little changes he can get. And for me,

0:43:01 > 0:43:06Lewis will love this, he is the master of these conditions and has

0:43:06 > 0:43:11great control, that is why I think he will try and win this. Mercedes

0:43:12 > 0:43:17might be struggling for pace but McLaren who used Mercedes engines

0:43:17 > 0:43:23are not and we are talking to the boss of a Mercedes engines. And

0:43:23 > 0:43:27talking of being on the front row, with less than a tenth of a second

0:43:28 > 0:43:32between Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton, where did that time go?

0:43:32 > 0:43:42You will find this fascinating, it is incredible! This is what

0:43:42 > 0:43:43

0:43:43 > 0:43:48happened in qualifying. It was an epic battle for pole

0:43:48 > 0:43:55position. Mark Webber on the left and Lewis Hamilton on the right.

0:43:55 > 0:44:05The only interchangeable parts were the tyres, but they were five

0:44:05 > 0:44:05

0:44:05 > 0:44:13hundredths of a second behind Mark Webber. The front grip of the

0:44:13 > 0:44:19McLaren is better, we can see. Mark Webber locks his left front and

0:44:19 > 0:44:25Lewis Hamilton is still ahead. Tone four, a slight lift on the throttle

0:44:25 > 0:44:30and a straight, 170 mph up to the last sector and Lewis Hamilton is a

0:44:30 > 0:44:36tenth of a second faster. Mark Webber gets to work on the middle

0:44:36 > 0:44:40part of the lap and he heads down the hill at 180 miles per hour. He

0:44:40 > 0:44:50breaks later in Two Tone seven and the hairpin and suddenly he's a few

0:44:50 > 0:44:55metres ahead he brakes later. Into turn seven. And he climbs towards

0:44:55 > 0:45:00eight and nine at 160 mph and he stretches the lead by a metre or

0:45:00 > 0:45:05two. A tremendous speed through the exit, moving to the right above the

0:45:05 > 0:45:12breaking speed into the high-speed chicane at her and 10 Anne turn

0:45:12 > 0:45:17leva. This is the end of the second sector, Mark Webber is clearly

0:45:17 > 0:45:25ahead but Lewis Hamilton refuses to give up. 190 miles per hour towards

0:45:25 > 0:45:32the end of the lap into to and 13 and 14, slow chicane. Hamilton is

0:45:32 > 0:45:36faster and it is neck and neck with one corner to go. Moved towards the

0:45:36 > 0:45:42outside of the corner, early on the throttle and as the finish line

0:45:42 > 0:45:46comes up, Mark Webber is fractionally ahead. A technically

0:45:46 > 0:45:56brilliant flak from Lewis Hamilton, what a line-up at the front of the

0:45:56 > 0:45:58

0:45:58 > 0:46:03Alonso the best he could get was fourth on the grid. In that middle

0:46:03 > 0:46:10sector, Lewis Hamilton was the fourth fastest car. Now the latest

0:46:10 > 0:46:20from the front rung team. Red Bull and the weather. Lee is with

0:46:20 > 0:46:24Christian Horner. Lee? We're used to see a Red Bull at the front

0:46:24 > 0:46:29ashes slaigtly different one. How is Mark feeling? Good it is going

0:46:29 > 0:46:34to be a fantastic race. With a bit of rain in the area as well that

0:46:34 > 0:46:41will only make life more tense. But it is set to be an exciting rate

0:46:41 > 0:46:47race. This might be the test for us at home to see if Mark is leading

0:46:48 > 0:46:52and seb Sebian is hunting him down, will he be told to maintain the gap.

0:46:52 > 0:46:57They may end up in a situation that could take points from the team.

0:46:57 > 0:47:03But they're free to race. They know that. The objective is to make sure

0:47:03 > 0:47:08we beat Lewis Hamilton and Fernando. It is not just about our guys.

0:47:08 > 0:47:13were not impressed with the German summer. What will happen today with

0:47:13 > 0:47:17the weather? They say the weather is in England is like this. But I

0:47:17 > 0:47:21understand it is a nice day there. But I think we have got spotters

0:47:21 > 0:47:25around the track and we send them into the wind to keep an eye on the

0:47:25 > 0:47:29weather. It is so local here. We're high and the weather can change

0:47:29 > 0:47:33quickly. Rain this afternoon? sure at some point. It is a

0:47:33 > 0:47:40question of when. You can't rely on the radar. You have to look at the

0:47:40 > 0:47:45cloud and see what is going on. Thank you. JAKE HUMPHREY: Rain this

0:47:45 > 0:47:51afternoon, try right now. It is actually raining now. There is Mark

0:47:51 > 0:47:55Webber. We spoke a lot about Mark and have hardly spoken about

0:47:55 > 0:48:01Sebastian Vettel. Not on the front row for the first time in 14 races.

0:48:01 > 0:48:06People say he struggles to overtake a good test of his skills? EDDIE

0:48:06 > 0:48:10JORDAN: He is an outstanding driver and I believe he can overtake. It

0:48:10 > 0:48:15is a big test for Mark, he has not capitalised on the pole positions

0:48:15 > 0:48:19he has had. So it is a big test. I can't wait to she what will happen.

0:48:19 > 0:48:23Into the first corner it will be probably Lewis Hamilton and who

0:48:23 > 0:48:28knows after that. He has a different helmet every week,

0:48:28 > 0:48:33Sebastian Vettel. Good luck to him. That is his special German Grand

0:48:33 > 0:48:37Prix helmet. The fans are ready to shout and wail as he goes buy.

0:48:37 > 0:48:44Every where you go, plenty of Ferrari outfits on show. But more

0:48:44 > 0:48:49Red Bull each year. Eddie, who will win? I think Lewis Hamilton has to

0:48:49 > 0:48:56be and will be massively aggressive. Red Bull less so 5 I'm sure Lewis

0:48:56 > 0:49:02Hamilton will win. Jenson Button starts she Athletic -- starts

0:49:02 > 0:49:06seventh. But he has too big a mountain to climb. Vesh is on pole

0:49:06 > 0:49:10position position -- Mark Webber is on pole position and the rain is

0:49:10 > 0:49:17starting to fall. Isn't this just perfect? It might be worth

0:49:17 > 0:49:23switching to the HD Channel if you have it. In the company of Martin

0:49:23 > 0:49:33Brundle and David cowl that's right. Time for the Nurburgring to live up

0:49:33 > 0:50:12

0:50:12 > 0:50:17the World Championship and the Nurburgring has played host to

0:50:17 > 0:50:22three different events, the Grand Prix of Europe and Luxembourg and

0:50:22 > 0:50:27this, the German Grand Prix. This track alternates with Hockenheim

0:50:27 > 0:50:33for the German Grand Prix. The last race was in 2009 and it was

0:50:33 > 0:50:39dominated by Mark Webber. There is the track layout. 15 turns, 3.2

0:50:40 > 0:50:43miles. And the three sectors that we monitor through the race and the

0:50:43 > 0:50:50lap record still held by Michael Schumacher. But back in the day

0:50:50 > 0:50:55when they had bigger engines. Track temperature just 15 Celsius. Air

0:50:55 > 0:51:00temperature 13 degrees. We're looking at a puddle outside the

0:51:00 > 0:51:06window and it is definitely raining hard now. Challenging times for the

0:51:06 > 0:51:12drivers to say the least. Hero to zero stuff I would imagine on tyre

0:51:12 > 0:51:18choice and pit stop strategy. Mark Webber's victory, David, back in

0:51:18 > 0:51:232009 was delivered in different track conditions than today. What

0:51:23 > 0:51:28is inside the drivers' helmets at this moment as they face this

0:51:28 > 0:51:33unknown? It is interesting, you have Mark Webber thinking I have

0:51:33 > 0:51:39got a clean run o' the first corner x but remarkably of the last nine

0:51:39 > 0:51:44Grand Prixs he has lost positions in the first five, or in fave of

0:51:44 > 0:51:49those. So he has it all to lose. If you go down to Jenson Button in

0:51:49 > 0:51:53seventh, where he started in the Canadian Grand Prix. He will say

0:51:53 > 0:51:58this is my opportunity. Something different and changeable and the

0:51:58 > 0:52:02McLaren gets heat in the tyres early and Jenson Button can find

0:52:02 > 0:52:06grip seemingly where others can't and as we speak, the rain is coming

0:52:06 > 0:52:10down heavily. Everyone will have committed to going on the start

0:52:10 > 0:52:15with their, the tyre they have qualified on. Because it is not wet

0:52:15 > 0:52:19enough on track to put others on. But we could see a situation where

0:52:19 > 0:52:25you come around to grid we could see people pulling into the -- into

0:52:25 > 0:52:30the pit lane rather than going to start grid. They may set off in on

0:52:30 > 0:52:35dry tyres. The DRS has been disabled. The drag reduction system,

0:52:35 > 0:52:41that letterbox on the rear wing to go kilometres an hour faster down

0:52:41 > 0:52:45the straights and it is the back straight where it is operated. So

0:52:45 > 0:52:51the FIA think the track is with the enough not to allow that system at

0:52:51 > 0:52:56the moment. It is not aloud any way in the first two laps -- allowed

0:52:56 > 0:53:01any way in the first two laps. We will see whether they decide to

0:53:01 > 0:53:09enable that at the end of the second flying lap of the Grand Prix.

0:53:09 > 0:53:13There then is Mark Webber. Let's look at the entire grid for this

0:53:13 > 0:53:20afternoon's tkwree. -- Grand Prix. 24 starters. Mark Webber on the

0:53:20 > 0:53:28front row with Lewis Hamilton after that sensational lap. Vet have the

0:53:28 > 0:53:34is -- Sebastian Vettel is third. Jenson Button was disappointing in

0:53:34 > 0:53:44seventh. Petrov again in the top ten. Michael Schumacher rounds off

0:53:44 > 0:54:06

0:54:06 > 0:54:12the top ten. Mad mald is 13th. -- Trulli. Lut is 23rd because of a

0:54:12 > 0:54:16gear box change and luem luem on the back of grid because his --

0:54:16 > 0:54:20Sebastien Buemi on the back of the grid, because of a problem with his

0:54:20 > 0:54:26fuel. They have to say this is the mixture of our fuel and then with

0:54:26 > 0:54:31analysis and clever stuff, they check it through the year. Peering

0:54:31 > 0:54:34out the window here, the puddle look like it has got less rain

0:54:34 > 0:54:39falling on it. So to correct the potential of people coming in at

0:54:39 > 0:54:43the end of the lap, it doesn't look like will be enough rain before the

0:54:43 > 0:54:50start of the Grand Prix. But it is going to be interesting to see how

0:54:50 > 0:55:00brave the drivers are on the run to the first corner. 150 kilos of fuel

0:55:00 > 0:55:06on board, on a damp track in cold conditions. It is a shorter run.

0:55:06 > 0:55:11140 metres from pole to to -- the first corner, because of the moved

0:55:11 > 0:55:16position. But its unknown where you will press the predal. We will see

0:55:16 > 0:55:22those who need to make up ground sail down the outside. The apex of

0:55:22 > 0:55:27first corner is cricky -- tricky. Yes it drops into the apex and you

0:55:27 > 0:55:35want to take a wide line of course, like on any corner, to minimise the

0:55:35 > 0:55:39amount of drag on the car. But in doing so you risk locking the

0:55:39 > 0:55:44inside wheel. These cars are so stiff that that is something that

0:55:44 > 0:55:49would cost you a potential for problems with the tyre. They will

0:55:49 > 0:55:52be working hard to get heat into the tyres. These tyres are not

0:55:52 > 0:56:00designed to run in temperatures this cold. It is a Championship

0:56:00 > 0:56:08that tries to follow the sunshine. But somebody said to me, Mark

0:56:08 > 0:56:13Webber only ever watches Sebastian Vettel on the start, think bars Bas,

0:56:13 > 0:56:17-- Barcelona, and that maybe a chance for Lewis Hamilton. No, I

0:56:17 > 0:56:21think vesh watches whatever the nearest car -- Mark Webber watches

0:56:21 > 0:56:31whatever the nearest car to him is and that is usually Sebastian

0:56:31 > 0:56:32

0:56:32 > 0:56:38Vettel. There is another fight going on between Mercedes and Lotus.

0:56:38 > 0:56:45Renault are just three points apart. In the constructors' World

0:56:45 > 0:56:49Championship. So only Three times in 16 races has the pole sitter

0:56:49 > 0:56:57gone to win the race here and Mark Webber is one of those. Why is

0:56:57 > 0:57:00that? I don't have... I don't have a good answer for that. It doesn't

0:57:00 > 0:57:07make sense that the quickest car in qualifying is not converting that

0:57:07 > 0:57:10into a victory. It is not hard on the car or as difficult for driver

0:57:10 > 0:57:20as somewhere like Monte Carlo where one mistake you're in the wall. So

0:57:20 > 0:57:21

0:57:21 > 0:57:26that is unusual. Answers on a post card! There was Christian Horner,

0:57:26 > 0:57:31of course team principal in Red Bull. Ron Dennis of the McLaren

0:57:31 > 0:57:36team. As they line up on the front of grid and Lewis Hamilton is

0:57:36 > 0:57:40pointing his car towards Mark Webber. Adrian Newey the man who

0:57:40 > 0:57:44always seemed to make a Championship winning car sooner

0:57:44 > 0:57:49than later. As the cars come to grid. Stefano Domenicali of Ferrari

0:57:49 > 0:57:56team, they're fourth and fifth on the grid. Six German drivers. A

0:57:56 > 0:57:59quarter of the grid, all hoping for home tkphrory. 18 others intent on

0:57:59 > 0:58:04gate crashing their party. The lights have been on for three and a

0:58:05 > 0:58:09laugh sect seconds for the support -- and a half seconds for the

0:58:09 > 0:58:15support race. Five red laigts we're waiting for and there they are.

0:58:15 > 0:58:22Four, five, one, two three and a laugh go! The German Grand Prix is

0:58:22 > 0:58:28under way. And it is neck and neck. But Lewis Hamilton in the second

0:58:28 > 0:58:32face takes the lead. Mark Webber in a Ferrari sandwich. It is so tight

0:58:32 > 0:58:37and Fernando Alonso is ahead of Mark Webber. Lewis Hamilton leads

0:58:37 > 0:58:41from Sebastian Vettel. Lewis Hamilton leads from Mark Webber and

0:58:41 > 0:58:48then Sebastian Vettel. Rosberg is right in there as well. Fernando

0:58:48 > 0:58:54Alonso will not yield. There is a spinner on the back. That is at

0:58:54 > 0:59:01turn three. Who was that? A lot going on. Maybe some contact. But

0:59:01 > 0:59:07Jenson Button is up the inside of Michael Schumacher. Another poor

0:59:07 > 0:59:14getaway for Jenson Button. Lewis Hamilton leads from Mark Webber,

0:59:14 > 0:59:18Fernando Alonso. It may have been Paul di Resta that had the spin.

0:59:18 > 0:59:24There may have been contact. Right at the back. Michael Schumacher in

0:59:24 > 0:59:28the thick of the traffic. And so we think that Fernando Alonso is

0:59:28 > 0:59:33between the two Red Bulls still. Lewis Hamilton from Mark Webber,

0:59:33 > 0:59:39Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel. As we're watching the midfield.

0:59:39 > 0:59:46There is Rubens Barrichello in front of Kobayashi for 11th and

0:59:46 > 0:59:5612th. Look at the lead Lewis Hamilton has from Mark Webber and

0:59:56 > 0:59:56

0:59:56 > 1:00:06Sebastian Vettel. Lewis Hamilton will lead at the end of the first

1:00:06 > 1:00:12

1:00:12 > 1:00:18still running but as he said, David, Heidfeld and di Resta or at the

1:00:18 > 1:00:26back of the field, they must have been contact between them. There is

1:00:26 > 1:00:31Alonso of the race track. He has obviously gone out on the kerb on

1:00:31 > 1:00:36the long term two and lost the back end but thankfully, lots of Tarmac

1:00:36 > 1:00:41for him to regain position. There will be some choice Spanish words

1:00:41 > 1:00:49inside that cockpit because he has released the Vettel now. Rosberg is

1:00:49 > 1:00:53writing their as well splitting the Ferraris. Schumacher has passed

1:00:53 > 1:01:03Petrov on this up who is now in front of Barrichello. Hopefully we

1:01:03 > 1:01:03

1:01:04 > 1:01:07will get a replay of that. Button is down three places from the start,

1:01:07 > 1:01:13Hamilton up one. Schumacher up two, he has often been a mighty starter

1:01:13 > 1:01:17this year, Schumacher. Button is still down in tenth place. Hamilton

1:01:17 > 1:01:22was mighty in that first sector yesterday qualifying and in this

1:01:22 > 1:01:29early stage of the race, he is half a second quicker in the first

1:01:29 > 1:01:33sector than Mark Webber. He is romping away at the front. We often

1:01:33 > 1:01:38see but McLaren have a better race pace than Red Bull and that is

1:01:38 > 1:01:42showing up again here. There is a question about how quickly they can

1:01:42 > 1:01:47bring the tyres fully up to temperature. Alonso right behind

1:01:47 > 1:01:57the red bowl of Vettel but we are not in the D ers activation point

1:01:57 > 1:02:01

1:02:01 > 1:02:11yet. -- the Red Bull of Vettel. is still disabled, as far as I know.

1:02:11 > 1:02:12

1:02:12 > 1:02:21We need a message. It is unable now. -- it is enabled now. Hamilton is

1:02:21 > 1:02:31outside that zone. Here is a replay of the start. He starts to drop his

1:02:31 > 1:02:35

1:02:35 > 1:02:40rpm. That was a terrible start. revs just faded away. I wonder if

1:02:40 > 1:02:49the clutch was starting to bite. We go on board with Alonso with a nice

1:02:49 > 1:02:59view of Hamilton. Hamilton absolutely flew. We see Vettel

1:02:59 > 1:02:59

1:02:59 > 1:03:09loping -- locking up. Brave stuff from Alonso. He could have easily

1:03:09 > 1:03:09

1:03:10 > 1:03:19lost his nose with that one. Massa had a flying start. So close

1:03:20 > 1:03:31

1:03:31 > 1:03:38therefore Vettel who was in the place. Now it is Vettel who has

1:03:38 > 1:03:43done the fastest lap. Again and on so gets white. He is dealing with a

1:03:43 > 1:03:53lot of understeer in the Ferrari. He could be struggling with tyre

1:03:53 > 1:03:56

1:03:56 > 1:04:01temperature. Let's look at the times. Once again, Hamilton banging

1:04:01 > 1:04:07in these first sectors, again four- tenths quicker than best the Red

1:04:07 > 1:04:14Bulls. He has such oaks could front-end on the McLaren. The first

1:04:14 > 1:04:22sector of the lap is about grip. Let's get past him as soon as we

1:04:22 > 1:04:27can, unless he will run an hour race. That does not sound like an

1:04:27 > 1:04:31option, it sounded like a firm request from one Smedley to fully

1:04:31 > 1:04:41pay Massa, your afternoon is read if you do not clear this Mercedes

1:04:41 > 1:04:49

1:04:49 > 1:04:53They did not put on the pit straight here because there is

1:04:54 > 1:05:03often a lot of over taking any way down into the heavy braking zone of

1:05:03 > 1:05:08turn one. Just looking down the grid, icy Kobayashi has been one of

1:05:08 > 1:05:15the biggest benefactors of the start. He has gone from 17th to

1:05:15 > 1:05:2211th place. We end up five. Hamilton leads by 1.8 seconds from

1:05:22 > 1:05:28Mark Webber. Vettel third, Alonso fourth, Rosberg Fifth, Massa sixth,

1:05:28 > 1:05:38Sutil seventh, Michael Schumacher eighth, now 10 seconds behind the

1:05:38 > 1:05:41

1:05:41 > 1:05:51leader. Then Petrov, butter and still tenth. -- Button stilt tenth.

1:05:51 > 1:06:05

1:06:05 > 1:06:13Kobayashi at the 11th, Barrichello the moment. The fastest man on the

1:06:13 > 1:06:17previous lap was Mark Webber. as I said, you are much quicker, if

1:06:17 > 1:06:26you don't need to be KERS for the rest of the circuit, you can stay

1:06:26 > 1:06:31with it... He will not be penalised for missing the corner if he did

1:06:31 > 1:06:36not gain an advantage but I wonder if he showed his hand too early.

1:06:36 > 1:06:42Nico Rosberg was defending the inside line. Ers will give you 20

1:06:42 > 1:06:49kilometres an hour in top speed. It can surely be a matter of time

1:06:49 > 1:06:58where is he Alonso giving him a run in turn tan. The big gap now is

1:06:58 > 1:07:06down to 1.2 seconds. Alonso was quicker than the leader in fourth

1:07:06 > 1:07:13place. The incident at the start of the race between di Resta and

1:07:13 > 1:07:19Heidfeld is being investigated. At the moment, the two men on the

1:07:19 > 1:07:24march of Webber in second and Alonso in fourth. We have a bit of

1:07:24 > 1:07:29a yo-yo effect around the track. Hamilton is definitely the man in

1:07:29 > 1:07:35the first sector. He is a couple of tenths quicker than Webber. Mark

1:07:35 > 1:07:39has the upper hand on Sebastian all weekend in all conditions so not

1:07:39 > 1:07:43only is Sebastian trying to close the gap, he is having to keep a

1:07:44 > 1:07:49watchful eye on Fernando Alonso and it will not be lost on him that if

1:07:49 > 1:07:57he gets one tiny opportunity, he will take it. Mark Webber still has

1:07:57 > 1:08:01not led an app this season after that difficult pole start. Maybe

1:08:02 > 1:08:10his primary clutch was dragging because the engine revs faded when

1:08:10 > 1:08:20he knew -- least needed them to. The reigning world champion

1:08:20 > 1:08:34

1:08:34 > 1:08:39Sebastian Vettel is fending off exactly one second behind. Alonso,

1:08:39 > 1:08:46the top four are covered by 3.6 seconds and still Massa has not

1:08:46 > 1:08:50passed Rosberg. Just explain to us Rob Smedley's instruction about

1:08:50 > 1:08:55using his KERS correctly. He is telling him to use all his KERS on

1:08:55 > 1:09:02the run out of turn 11 where the DRS activations owners as well to

1:09:02 > 1:09:11get a double whammy. And then the seven seconds of KERS and the 20

1:09:11 > 1:09:13seconds -- 20 k you will gain with the DRS. Crucially, the McLaren was

1:09:13 > 1:09:1910 kilometres an hour faster through this speed trap on

1:09:19 > 1:09:27qualifying. If we are saying that DRS Gibbs 20 Kay, marked only has a

1:09:27 > 1:09:3710 K advantage. You have too much real locking. Normally just adjust

1:09:37 > 1:09:38

1:09:38 > 1:09:43your brake bias but KERS interferes with that horribly. That is it. We

1:09:43 > 1:09:50see again Rosberg defending from massive. I cannot feel that Massa

1:09:50 > 1:09:57is showing his hand too early. He has to be smarter than that. There

1:09:57 > 1:10:05is no sign of the threatened rain. I heard it was 80 to 90 % certain.

1:10:05 > 1:10:09Look at this! Alonso in to turn one. He has made it work. That is a pure

1:10:09 > 1:10:13overtake. Fernando Alonso takes third place. Sebastian Vettel Kimi

1:10:13 > 1:10:21has been wearing a heavy demeanour, and unhappy face all weekend. He

1:10:21 > 1:10:25has not looked as perky and confident as he has all season.

1:10:25 > 1:10:31would not be surprised if Fernando has used all his KERS in their run-

1:10:31 > 1:10:38down to the first corner. He would have been working that out for the

1:10:38 > 1:10:42last couple of laps. That was extraordinary, how far behind he

1:10:42 > 1:10:48was in the middle of the pit straight. Maybe he gave it a full

1:10:48 > 1:10:53punch of KERS but he was still darting around. It was a bold move

1:10:53 > 1:10:59from Fernando there and probably caught Sebastian Vettel out. Jenson

1:10:59 > 1:11:06Button is still mired down in tenth place between Vitaly Petrov and

1:11:06 > 1:11:12Camilla Kobayashi. Jenson's weekend is kind of going from bad to worse,

1:11:12 > 1:11:19it has to be said -- Kamui Kobayashi. They are running eight

1:11:19 > 1:11:24seconds a lap slower than qualifying. That is a world apart

1:11:24 > 1:11:28from the confidence they felt. Maybe Alonso has spent more time on

1:11:28 > 1:11:37Friday practice with full tanks getting his eye on where he needs

1:11:37 > 1:11:47to brake on turn one. Hamilton Leeds. Where there is definitely

1:11:47 > 1:11:54

1:11:54 > 1:11:59Vettel. There is a big gap behind him down to Nico Rosberg in fifth

1:11:59 > 1:12:09who has still got Felipe Massa in close company. Sutil hanging on

1:12:09 > 1:12:13well in seventh. Perez has fitted - - pitted for Sauber. He is normally

1:12:13 > 1:12:18the man who never wants to come into the pits and he runs all day

1:12:18 > 1:12:26on the same set of tyres. He is so cheap to run and it seems to pay

1:12:26 > 1:12:30dividends but it has not scored 10 points. Let's see if we can get a

1:12:30 > 1:12:36visual. Anyway, or were Don Jenson Button, apparently from McLaren,

1:12:36 > 1:12:42there are no issues with his car. We are going to see a replay here

1:12:42 > 1:12:49of the Perez incident. That is Paul di Resta getting down the inside of

1:12:49 > 1:12:59Kovalainen. It was a straight forward pass like taking candy from

1:12:59 > 1:13:03

1:13:03 > 1:13:06a kid. I think we saw with Perez there was a horrible flat spot. The

1:13:06 > 1:13:11reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel has been off and he has lost

1:13:11 > 1:13:18seven seconds in the middle sector. Surely Rosberg must be all over him.

1:13:18 > 1:13:23There is Vettel. Having Rosberg for company along with Felipe Massa.

1:13:23 > 1:13:27Rosberg is having a look up the inside. Vettel has made an error at

1:13:27 > 1:13:32turn ten, that is the chicane at the top of the hill. What is going

1:13:32 > 1:13:38wrong with the man who could make no mistakes, who was unbeatable in

1:13:38 > 1:13:44terms of pace and consistency? think we are about to find out. He

1:13:44 > 1:13:51gets on the white line. That is an uncharacteristic mistake from

1:13:51 > 1:13:59Sebastian. The one rule is do not touch the white lines. Alonso gets

1:13:59 > 1:14:02away with it but gets on to the artificial grass. He will be

1:14:02 > 1:14:08struggling with his braking points with the amount of vibration he

1:14:09 > 1:14:12will have. That was reminiscent of how Jenson Button lost the Canadian

1:14:12 > 1:14:22Grand Prix by turning to wide. It was fully on the carpet which is

1:14:22 > 1:14:23

1:14:23 > 1:14:28full of water as well. It was not one of those 190 mile an hour push

1:14:28 > 1:14:32it down the racetrack, or was it? wonder if it will force his hand

1:14:32 > 1:14:39into a three-stop racetrack so we will probably expect to see him in

1:14:39 > 1:14:46on lap 15. Remember a few years ago, we had Kimi Raikkonen in the

1:14:46 > 1:14:49McLaren, he had such bad flat spots it broke his suspension. That was

1:14:49 > 1:14:59back in 2005 where you were obliged to run one set of tyres for the

1:14:59 > 1:15:06

1:15:06 > 1:15:11race. Hamilton Leeds on lap 11 by having passed Sebastian Vettel is

1:15:11 > 1:15:16homing in and we have hide felt off the road. Mr Reliable has crashed

1:15:16 > 1:15:21sm he finishes race after race after race, somewhere near the

1:15:21 > 1:15:24points. That is clearly contact with with somebody else. That is

1:15:24 > 1:15:31like an incident I had with Fernando Alonso here several years

1:15:31 > 1:15:35ago. Who was he racing? It is Sebastien Buemi. That was a nasty

1:15:35 > 1:15:40incident. That is a case of Sebastien Buemi not being aware of

1:15:40 > 1:15:48where the other car was. Hide felt was entitled to put his car there.

1:15:48 > 1:15:54There was a gap. A right rear puncture for Sebastien Buemi as

1:15:54 > 1:15:59well. That almost look like it us fast forward. That is a scary

1:15:59 > 1:16:06incident. Sebastien Buemi was looking left in his mirror and he

1:16:06 > 1:16:10couldn't see Heidfeld he didn't realise he was to the right. The

1:16:11 > 1:16:18yellow flags are out, unsurprisingly. It is a long way

1:16:18 > 1:16:21off the track. Lied feld has been given a -- Heidfeld has been given

1:16:21 > 1:16:26a drive-through penalty for causing collision with Paul di Resta at the

1:16:26 > 1:16:31start of race. Burr he won't be serving that. He will be - o' but

1:16:31 > 1:16:36he won't be serving that. He will be suspended from a tractor soon.

1:16:36 > 1:16:42Felipe Massa is in position to get passed Rosberg. He will deploy his

1:16:42 > 1:16:47KERS and Rosberg will do the same. This is battle of drag and

1:16:47 > 1:16:53horsepower and in the end, Felipe Massa says I have got it this time.

1:16:53 > 1:17:01Rob Smedley will be on the radio, saying, well done son! So the

1:17:01 > 1:17:06collision between Heidfeld, Heidfeld is now under... Under two

1:17:06 > 1:17:11incidents being considered, investigated. But here is a replay

1:17:11 > 1:17:15of Massa. He got himself into right position and would not be

1:17:15 > 1:17:20intimidated. I don't know if they quite touch. But Massa takes that

1:17:20 > 1:17:24position. And it will be interesting to see if he can start

1:17:24 > 1:17:28getting closer to Sebastian Vettel, who is 13 seconds off the lead in

1:17:28 > 1:17:34fourth. But this is shaping up nicely. Mark Webber half a second

1:17:34 > 1:17:40behind Lewis Hamilton. Your pace basis still good. The gap is not

1:17:40 > 1:17:44opening up quickly behind us. We're going to need to extend this. Keep

1:17:44 > 1:17:51looking after the tyres. Keep looking after the tyres. He has

1:17:51 > 1:17:56gone too deep. Mark Webber will be through. Any KERS left he will

1:17:56 > 1:18:01deploy it. I don't see how Lewis Hamilton can defend that. Mark

1:18:01 > 1:18:06getting out of shape and Lewis is back in the slip stream and comes

1:18:06 > 1:18:11up the inside. That is not DRS. That is just pure speed and

1:18:11 > 1:18:15Fernando Alonso watching closely too. He must be loving seeing that

1:18:15 > 1:18:20go on. Top three lying astern and Lewis Hamilton back in the lead. He

1:18:20 > 1:18:25never wants to give up. Just like in Istanbul and him and Jenson

1:18:25 > 1:18:31Button were trading places. Lewis Hamilton, hen he has been overtaken,

1:18:31 > 1:18:35he sees that as another opportunity to re-overtake. I was thinking he

1:18:35 > 1:18:45was too late at the last corner, he was using that as an opportunity to

1:18:45 > 1:18:51pass. I wondered that. He went so deep into the chicane, I wondered,

1:18:51 > 1:18:57although they're normally delayed those transmissions, but he is on

1:18:57 > 1:19:01the edge of what that car will do. We get a replay here. Lewis

1:19:01 > 1:19:05Hamilton gets a bit wide on the first apex, allowing Mark Webber

1:19:05 > 1:19:11the clean run into turn 15. And this is the crucial thing, Lewis

1:19:11 > 1:19:15Hamilton stays wide, cuts inside and then gets the slip stream and

1:19:15 > 1:19:21uses the 10 kilometre an hour advantage that the McLaren has over

1:19:21 > 1:19:25the Red Bull. DRS not available there, but that driving again by

1:19:25 > 1:19:30Lewis Hamilton. But still Mark Webber's on top of him. Vesh will

1:19:30 > 1:19:35have to watch out for the -- vesh will have to watch out for the --

1:19:35 > 1:19:40Mark Webber will have to watch out for the Ferrari. Those two both

1:19:40 > 1:19:44have that advantage and you can't help but feel they have more raw

1:19:44 > 1:19:51pace than Lewis Hamilton. But it is only by a little bit and Fernando

1:19:51 > 1:19:56Alonso up the inside. Mark Webber blocks his right front. He can

1:19:56 > 1:20:05cutback and take a better line into turp two. But now Fernando Alonso

1:20:05 > 1:20:09will have better accuse Cemration - - acceleration. It is a guaranteed

1:20:09 > 1:20:11contact. But Fernando Alonso must be thinking can I win. He is seeing

1:20:11 > 1:20:17Mark Webber has been battling with Lewis Hamilton and he has been

1:20:17 > 1:20:20right in that one second window, overheating his tyres and losing

1:20:20 > 1:20:30performance. Mark Webber oversteering the car, drifting into

1:20:30 > 1:20:31

1:20:31 > 1:20:36turn seven. Tyres soon. Tyres soon, I think he said. Now Felipe Massa

1:20:36 > 1:20:40has passed Rosberg. He is the fastest man on the track. Felipe

1:20:40 > 1:20:45Massa will be catching Sebastian Vettel. That is another great fight.

1:20:45 > 1:20:52Sebastian Vettel holding off the second Ferrari of Felipe Massa.

1:20:52 > 1:20:59This is the top three of the Grand Prix on lap 14. They have both got

1:20:59 > 1:21:06their wings open. But they're not that close to Lewis Hamilton. It is

1:21:06 > 1:21:11a difficult brake zone. If you brake too early you give up two

1:21:11 > 1:21:21tenths of a second. Brake too late and you sail off the track. So

1:21:21 > 1:21:21

1:21:21 > 1:21:29tyres, the soft tyre. Prepared for one of the Red Bull drivers.

1:21:29 > 1:21:33Sebastian Vettel. Yes Mark Webber has pitted. And there we go. No new

1:21:33 > 1:21:37tyres. No new soft tyre available. Can he get out in front of the

1:21:37 > 1:21:42Sebastian Vettel and Felipe Massa fight? No he can't. But it will p

1:21:42 > 1:21:45crucial to get out in front of Adrian Sutil and Rosberg. Rosberg

1:21:45 > 1:21:53has pitted. So has Michael Schumacher. Mark Webber is now in

1:21:53 > 1:21:58traffic. That has not worked at all well. Let's see if he can clear

1:21:58 > 1:22:06Adrian Sutil to put himself back into play. He has gone for undercut

1:22:06 > 1:22:12to get full use of the new tyres. But he is in traffic. Button still

1:22:12 > 1:22:17trying to make his way passed Petrov. Jenson Button is 23 and a

1:22:17 > 1:22:21half seconds off the lead. He may be able to sail around the outside

1:22:21 > 1:22:26of five. I have seen a few drivers in the support races go around the

1:22:26 > 1:22:33outside of that corner and make some ground up. Jenson Button

1:22:33 > 1:22:41getting frustrated I would imagine in tenth. 2.7 seconds clear of

1:22:41 > 1:22:45Kobayashi, but they're miles off the pace. With Mark Webber pitting

1:22:45 > 1:22:51it should be Fernando Alonso close behind Lewis Hamilton. And we have

1:22:51 > 1:22:54then got Felipe Massa ever closer behind Sebastian Vettel. We have

1:22:54 > 1:23:02Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso doing like for like. First and

1:23:02 > 1:23:06second sectors. They're down past the start/finish straight. A 38.1

1:23:06 > 1:23:11for Lewis Hamilton. Jenson Button going for the outside into the

1:23:11 > 1:23:17chicane. Locking up the outside right. That was good defensive

1:23:17 > 1:23:22driving from Petrov. If you want to pass me, you're going the long way

1:23:22 > 1:23:26round, son. And unless you're, how can you be 10% better on the

1:23:26 > 1:23:31brakes? You aren't going to be. With world class drivers and

1:23:31 > 1:23:38similar cars. An opportunity for Jenson Button, but Vitaly defending

1:23:38 > 1:23:43the inside line. Jensen looking to get the cutback. It is too long a

1:23:43 > 1:23:49corner. Another opportunity in turn three. This I where I threw the old

1:23:49 > 1:23:53timer down the inside of Mika Hakkinen earlier. I did a pirouette,

1:23:53 > 1:23:59but these guys are a bit more skilled. That is the white line

1:23:59 > 1:24:08that cost you the Grand Prix victory in 2004. You went sailing

1:24:08 > 1:24:12off. I was commentating on it aye took as much pain. -- and I took as

1:24:12 > 1:24:18much pain. Mark Webber taking advantage of the fresh tyres.

1:24:18 > 1:24:23has passed Adrian Sutil. He has got some clear air now. 3.6 seconds

1:24:23 > 1:24:28before he catches Felipe Massa. Mark Webber is flying. If he can do

1:24:28 > 1:24:34that he will get track position. McLaren are in the pit lane. This

1:24:34 > 1:24:39will be for Lewis Hamilton. This is Felipe Massa on Sebastian Vettel.

1:24:39 > 1:24:42He makes it. He still makes a second apex too. Felipe Massa and

1:24:42 > 1:24:47look at that, Mark Webber has gone down the outside, Sebastian Vettel

1:24:47 > 1:24:52comes into the pits. It is a half- hearted Sebastian Vettel. Lewis

1:24:52 > 1:24:56Hamilton has done his pit stop. It will be a race out of pit lane with

1:24:56 > 1:25:00McLaren. Fernando Alonso and eleven e we have got. Felipe Massa and

1:25:00 > 1:25:04Mark Webber. Three abreast into the first corner. Felipe Massa leads,

1:25:04 > 1:25:08but Mark Webber has made his pit stop. He needs to make sure he does

1:25:08 > 1:25:13not damage his car. He has track position on Lewis Hamilton and

1:25:13 > 1:25:16Fernando Alonso. So we still, this is the top four. But Felipe Massa

1:25:16 > 1:25:21yet to make his pit stop. But he is in the thick of the action and he

1:25:21 > 1:25:26can play a role here. The undercut worked for Mark Webber. He found

1:25:26 > 1:25:34clear air and passed Adrian Sutil. He used the grip of the frish tyre,

1:25:34 > 1:25:40pumped in a 1.37.003 and found himself some extra track space. He

1:25:40 > 1:25:45now runs in second place. But Felipe Massa's yet to pit. Yes,

1:25:45 > 1:25:49Felipe Massa could be used to help Fernando Alonso. I don't see the

1:25:49 > 1:25:54Ferrari team out yet. They only need a 15 second warning. So it

1:25:54 > 1:26:00would be some way down the back straight. Probably around turn 12.

1:26:00 > 1:26:05So just follow them here in turn 10. Mark Webber is in the DRS

1:26:05 > 1:26:11activation zone and he has fresher tyres. He should be able to deploy.

1:26:11 > 1:26:16I think he is too far back. I don't see any Ferrari mechanics in the

1:26:16 > 1:26:21pit lane. Felipe Massa will stay out another lap. Now Mark Webber

1:26:21 > 1:26:25play get a better drive out of sli cane. Felipe Massa pits. Mark

1:26:25 > 1:26:31Webber will lead a lap of this Grand Prix and several more I

1:26:31 > 1:26:35suspect. He had good pace before the stop. This will be fascinating

1:26:35 > 1:26:40now to see if Mark Webber can begin to pull away and create a lead

1:26:40 > 1:26:47while these two are fighting. Look at the confidence Fernando Alonso

1:26:47 > 1:26:51has under brake. It is starting to rain again. Incredibly confidence

1:26:51 > 1:26:56in the Ferrari mechanics. They didn't come out until Fernando

1:26:56 > 1:27:00Alonso had entered the beginning of pit lane. We didn't see any sign of

1:27:00 > 1:27:04that. But they copied, or followed in Lewis Hamilton. And look at this,

1:27:04 > 1:27:08Mark Webber is edging a bit of fresh air between him and Lewis

1:27:08 > 1:27:15Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. We're on lap 18. That is the top three,

1:27:15 > 1:27:20Mark Webber from Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso. Felipe Massa has

1:27:20 > 1:27:25pitted, he was fourth. Adrian Sutil has yet to pit. He will move into

1:27:25 > 1:27:30fourth and we see Sebastian Vettel coming back on to the track. He is

1:27:30 > 1:27:34behind... Felipe Massa. He is behind Felipe Massa. Felipe Massa

1:27:34 > 1:27:40has just come out of pit so Sebastian Vettel has lost track

1:27:40 > 1:27:45position to Felipe Massa. So it is and Felipe Massa locks up a wheel.

1:27:45 > 1:27:50So they have both pitted and it goes from bad to worse for the

1:27:50 > 1:27:57World Championship leader. He is now in fifth place effectively.

1:27:57 > 1:28:00Albeit there are other cars that are yet to pit that. Is Adrian

1:28:00 > 1:28:04Sutil, Jenson Button and Kobayashi. Rosberg has pitted. Michael

1:28:04 > 1:28:14Schumacher has pitted. The next man in 12th, Jaime Alguersuari has not.

1:28:14 > 1:28:19

1:28:19 > 1:28:22Paul di Resta is up to 13th. have had Mark Webber setting the

1:28:22 > 1:28:28fastest lap. Lewis Hamilton is quicker than Fernando Alonso. The

1:28:28 > 1:28:36top three are covered by 1.7 seconds. Adrian Sutil continues to

1:28:36 > 1:28:44run fourth. Jenson Button is fifth. Just done a 1.38.5. His best lap of

1:28:44 > 1:28:49the Grand Prix. They don't like being pushed down the track. And

1:28:49 > 1:28:54there we see a replay of how it kicked off at the front after the

1:28:54 > 1:28:59pit stop. Mark Webber has already stopped. Felipe Massa has not made

1:28:59 > 1:29:04his stop. Lewis Hamilton slots into second place effectively. And this

1:29:05 > 1:29:09is how it looked from. You're not allowed to come across the line

1:29:09 > 1:29:14when you come out of pit. But you can cross the line into the pit

1:29:14 > 1:29:21lane when you're on the race track. They nearly pit there. Four drivers,

1:29:21 > 1:29:26two coming in on a at different speeds and luckily they were

1:29:26 > 1:29:30skilful enough not to have an air plane-style crash as they all aimed

1:29:30 > 1:29:37at the same piece of track at the same time. Lewis Hamilton is flying

1:29:37 > 1:29:42on this lap. He is three tenth quicker in the first sector. Reset

1:29:42 > 1:29:47your rotary. Position seven. That won't be a for a cup of tea. That

1:29:47 > 1:29:51will be for? I was going the ask you that, you have drirch these car

1:29:51 > 1:29:57and know about the Red Bull. -- driven these cars and know about

1:29:57 > 1:30:02the Red Bull. I wouldn't want to embarrass you. Let's work out what

1:30:02 > 1:30:08it could be. It is the not the magic paddle. Was that Sebastian

1:30:08 > 1:30:14Vettel? Who is that? It was Rett vet -- Sebastian Vettel right out

1:30:14 > 1:30:24on to the artificial grass. He is running the risk of what we saw

1:30:24 > 1:30:32

1:30:32 > 1:30:40seconds covers the top three at the moment and then there are 6.5

1:30:40 > 1:30:50seconds clear of Sutil. Massa is on much fresher tyres. Vettel fancies

1:30:50 > 1:30:52

1:30:52 > 1:31:01following him through. Let's hope we get some footage of KERS and DRS

1:31:01 > 1:31:10with Sebastian Vettel. Maybe he does not have KERS available at

1:31:10 > 1:31:20this stage in the race. Road treaty, a lot of switches on the steering

1:31:20 > 1:31:21

1:31:21 > 1:31:27wheel are Rotary, it could be fuel, a differential of KERS. The teams

1:31:27 > 1:31:36know we hear the messages. A sweet turn in turn five for Massa and

1:31:36 > 1:31:40Vettel. Kobayashi has not stopped for tyres and is beginning to

1:31:40 > 1:31:50struggle for pace. The next target for Massa is Vitaly Petrov who also

1:31:50 > 1:31:54has not stopped. So it'll his fourth and Button Fifth. Button is

1:31:54 > 1:32:00catching Adrian so too will. His race is beginning to come alive. I

1:32:00 > 1:32:04want to get inside Vettel's head. We have seen two errors at least.

1:32:05 > 1:32:11One Alonso past 10 in turn one, he was pretty submissive. What is

1:32:11 > 1:32:16going on there, it do you reckon? He is not at one with his car. We

1:32:16 > 1:32:19have seen some stunning performances at the start of this

1:32:19 > 1:32:26year. Massa having a sniff at Petrov but Petrov has shown he is

1:32:26 > 1:32:30not an easy pass. This might be an opportunity for Vettel to get back

1:32:30 > 1:32:33into this but he does not seem settled at all. With that, the

1:32:33 > 1:32:38confidence goes and that does the magic ingredient between the good

1:32:39 > 1:32:43drivers and the great drivers, the confidence. And maybe your tyre

1:32:43 > 1:32:48pressures and if you're not quite on it, it all starts falling away.

1:32:48 > 1:32:55Remember those famous Renault advert with the car which has a?

1:32:55 > 1:33:02Wide ray end, shall we say, that car -- the car which has a wide

1:33:02 > 1:33:08rear end, but that car is not as wide as this Renault. Massa has so

1:33:08 > 1:33:16much more speed and brick -- grape then he will coast into the braking

1:33:16 > 1:33:23zone. The man leading the world championship by 80 points when this

1:33:23 > 1:33:29race started, Sebastian Vettel, but he has not sailed through this race.

1:33:30 > 1:33:35The next target up the road is Jenson Button, seven seconds in

1:33:35 > 1:33:43front of Massa as they start to home in. There is no sign of any

1:33:43 > 1:33:48spots of rain at the moment. What is going on down the field? That is

1:33:48 > 1:33:54Rosberg on Petrov. That is the position as well. Does not make it

1:33:54 > 1:33:58stick. Right behind Rosberg is Michael Schumacher. Petrov showed

1:33:58 > 1:34:04his skill at keeping Alonso behind in Abu Dhabi last year so he is not

1:34:04 > 1:34:09at all fazed by racing his home Grand Prix while defending position.

1:34:09 > 1:34:15That was a brave move by Nico Rosberg. A tricky corner but well-

1:34:15 > 1:34:20defended and driven by both of them. That is true. The trouble is, when

1:34:20 > 1:34:27you start defending back hard, you all lose time. We will see a replay

1:34:27 > 1:34:33of Felipe Massa with his DRS wide- open at the back. There is no

1:34:33 > 1:34:38defending against a Ferrari with more speed and more grip. Sebastian

1:34:38 > 1:34:43Vettel following through into lap position and steals thataway. Now,

1:34:43 > 1:34:48Rosberg is up the inside and so is Michael Schumacher. Petrov knows he

1:34:48 > 1:34:53is there. Rosberg is having to attack and defend all at the same

1:34:53 > 1:34:59time. Schumacher is looking pretty feisty against his younger team-

1:34:59 > 1:35:04mate. They both passed the Renault of Petrov. Talking of Renaults,

1:35:05 > 1:35:10Nick Heidfeld in the sister car has been investigated for two incidents

1:35:10 > 1:35:14today, before tripping over Sebastien Buemi who did not see him

1:35:14 > 1:35:19coming. We have found Nick Heidfeld to hear his side of the story.

1:35:19 > 1:35:24a disappointing end to your home Grand Prix, tell us about it.

1:35:24 > 1:35:31definitely. Already on the start it was not so good. I lost a position

1:35:31 > 1:35:37when I collided with Paul into turn three. I tried hard to make up

1:35:37 > 1:35:40positions and behind it Buemi. He was blocking me which was OK on the

1:35:40 > 1:35:44left side, on the long straight before the chicane but then I was

1:35:44 > 1:35:48next to him on the right and he moved over and there was no wet ago.

1:35:48 > 1:35:54He pushed me onto the grass and there was an accident which could

1:35:54 > 1:35:58not be avoided. You were given a drive through with what happened

1:35:58 > 1:36:02with Paul di Resta but we did not see that. It was a sandwich into

1:36:02 > 1:36:08the second corner and in the third, Paul was on the outside. I locked

1:36:08 > 1:36:14up the front wheels and tried to avoid him but slid into him. That

1:36:14 > 1:36:18is Nick Heidfeld, the man who was eighth in the world Chan the ship.

1:36:18 > 1:36:28Michael Schumacher has spun the car on the exit to turn three. Isn't it

1:36:28 > 1:36:29

1:36:29 > 1:36:34at the top of the hill? That is where we saw Vettel. Schumacher,

1:36:34 > 1:36:37that is a shame because he was having a good run behind Nico

1:36:37 > 1:36:46Rosberg and now he has di Resta, Maldonado and Kobayashi right

1:36:46 > 1:36:50behind him. Michael is back to 11th. That has released Alguersuari and

1:36:50 > 1:36:54Petrov past Tim. Racing is going on all the way through the field. I

1:36:54 > 1:36:57mentioned at the start of the race, the big fight going on between

1:36:57 > 1:37:06Mercedes-Benz and Renault. Mercedes-Benz were doing very

1:37:06 > 1:37:12nicely indeed. We have one Renault out of the race. Michael slips a

1:37:12 > 1:37:20place or two with an error. I wonder if he dipped his wheel? He

1:37:21 > 1:37:24did. He did a Vettel. They do call Sebastian Vettel the baby

1:37:24 > 1:37:31Schumacher. He does not have to copy the great man, he does it

1:37:31 > 1:37:37before him. I never did that but I have seen it happen so many times.

1:37:37 > 1:37:43You are looking left into the apex but that is probably a metre of the

1:37:43 > 1:37:50racetrack. A man of Schumacher and Vettel's skills, why would they end

1:37:50 > 1:37:55up a metre wide? My experience is, when I have made mistakes and we

1:37:55 > 1:38:05see the McLaren mechanics coming out into the pit lane in front of

1:38:05 > 1:38:07

1:38:07 > 1:38:12our commentary box. The track surface is slippery. Button tries

1:38:12 > 1:38:17to slow the car down to 100 kilometres an hour. There are the

1:38:17 > 1:38:24mechanics. The last time he pitted in a Grand Prix, the right front

1:38:24 > 1:38:28did not really go on. Away goes Jenson Button. Let's see if he can

1:38:28 > 1:38:38recover his afternoon having lost so much time behind Petrov early

1:38:38 > 1:38:45on? He will pit miles ahead of Petrov and Co. Michael Schumacher

1:38:45 > 1:38:55is leading that train with Kobayashi, Maldonado, Pet trove and

1:38:55 > 1:39:06

1:39:06 > 1:39:11prayers behind him. -- Perez and first lap. Heidfeld was punished

1:39:11 > 1:39:21for that but he crashed before he served the punishment. Paul di

1:39:21 > 1:39:26

1:39:26 > 1:39:31Resta is up to 60. -- 16th. We have 22 runners. Chandhok is 22nd at the

1:39:31 > 1:39:36moment. We have lost Barrichello and Nick Heidfeld. Barrichello

1:39:36 > 1:39:40retired from the race. We will try and find out why that was. And Nick

1:39:40 > 1:39:46Heidfeld had the contact with Sebastien Buemi who did not have

1:39:46 > 1:39:50suspension damage, just a puncture. D'Ambrosio has just pitted. Alonso

1:39:50 > 1:40:00has done a new fastest lap of the Grand Prix. The top three are

1:40:00 > 1:40:01

1:40:01 > 1:40:10covered by just 2.8 seconds. We are moving towards lap 30, the halfway

1:40:10 > 1:40:14point of this race and this Formula One season. Webber leads by 1.4.

1:40:14 > 1:40:19The top three are lapping within a tenth or two. And they all have a

1:40:19 > 1:40:26pit-stop in hand over fourth-placed Massa. So it is a three-horse race,

1:40:26 > 1:40:34you are saying? RADIO: Sebastian, we might have a problem with the

1:40:34 > 1:40:42rear brakes. That will be brake wear. I cannot imagine what else

1:40:42 > 1:40:51they have issues with. They may have put too much brake take on.

1:40:51 > 1:40:56They can take that off with a Stanley knife. It is the easiest

1:40:56 > 1:41:02stuff to get off if you have to. That might just explain why

1:41:02 > 1:41:06Sebastian Vettel looks very much out of sorts today. He is running

1:41:06 > 1:41:16fifth, 28 seconds off the lead, lapping about half a second per lap

1:41:16 > 1:41:23slower. The top three, Webber, Hamilton and Alonso. Red Bull,

1:41:23 > 1:41:28McLaren, Ferrari. They are 22.5 seconds clear of Felipe Massa. 20

1:41:28 > 1:41:35seconds, including a stop, will give you a pit stops so they have

1:41:35 > 1:41:40that comfort zone. Vettel is carrying a problem, surely. I think

1:41:40 > 1:41:50you are right. A little birdie said Michael Schumacher had exactly the

1:41:50 > 1:41:56

1:41:56 > 1:42:00same spin at the same corner in like that when I followed him home

1:42:00 > 1:42:06in Monaco in second place but it did not work out like that back in

1:42:06 > 1:42:10the day with Michael. Heidfeld is out with an accident and let's find

1:42:10 > 1:42:16out what happened to Rubens Barrichello. Conditions were not

1:42:16 > 1:42:21easy out there today but I think it was your car that let you down?

1:42:21 > 1:42:25we were running quite well. We had such a lovely start. I was running

1:42:25 > 1:42:30with a pace which was quite comfortable to do a two-stop. They

1:42:30 > 1:42:38told me to stop because I had an engine failure. Even there I tried

1:42:38 > 1:42:42to continue, they said there was no way. I could not afford to go

1:42:42 > 1:42:48against the whole team telling me to stop so I had to stop.

1:42:48 > 1:42:52slippy is the track out there? is a slippy but it is more to do

1:42:52 > 1:42:57with the fact that it is cold than wear it. Be little drizzling that

1:42:57 > 1:43:02we saw is not affecting it. It is affecting the temperature into the

1:43:02 > 1:43:06tyres? Yes, you can see Kobayashi, for example, he is holding the

1:43:06 > 1:43:11tyres pretty well. At the front there will be that fight. At the

1:43:11 > 1:43:17back, you need to manage the tyres a little bit more. Thank you.

1:43:17 > 1:43:27Interesting to hear Rubens' side of the story. Clearly, the track is

1:43:27 > 1:43:28

1:43:28 > 1:43:34not yielding the sort of grip they were hoping for. The air is just 13

1:43:34 > 1:43:42degrees. How DC the strategy unfolding as we head towards mid-

1:43:42 > 1:43:50race? Strategy, who will be the first to blink? We saw Mark Webber

1:43:50 > 1:43:54make good use of the undercut, the fresh set of tyres. In the

1:43:54 > 1:43:58commentary box we are in front of the Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari

1:43:58 > 1:44:08pit boxes and these guys are so evenly matched that whoever will

1:44:08 > 1:44:21

1:44:21 > 1:44:27will get the strategy right this Alonso quicker that time but it is

1:44:27 > 1:44:32just a tenth or two, there is nothing between them. What is

1:44:32 > 1:44:37fantastic to see is the difference in performance in the car driver

1:44:37 > 1:44:40combination. McLaren is incredible through that first sector. Red Bull

1:44:40 > 1:44:44dominates the last sector and the Ferrari is sit somewhere between

1:44:44 > 1:44:48the two of them. If you wear to mix all these cars together, you would

1:44:48 > 1:44:54get a car which would get half a second quicker. Absolutely right.

1:44:54 > 1:44:57Let's not forget, a totally dry race where they do not use the

1:44:58 > 1:45:02intermediate tyre, there have to use the other medium compound tyre

1:45:02 > 1:45:07mark up with white paint. That could be a second aspect to who

1:45:07 > 1:45:11could really cut it towards the end of the Grand Prix. Talking with the

1:45:11 > 1:45:16strategists beforehand, it is a question about how late you will

1:45:16 > 1:45:22come in for the last stop on the prime tyre. There is as much as two

1:45:22 > 1:45:26seconds a lap time difference in qualifying. We expect that to be

1:45:26 > 1:45:32half in race trim but one second a lap difference is huge. We have to

1:45:32 > 1:45:42keep one eye on the weather. Mike Gascoyne has tweeted that he thinks

1:45:42 > 1:45:50

1:45:50 > 1:46:00off the tyres. I think we can start closing now. How casual is that? If

1:46:00 > 1:46:01

1:46:01 > 1:46:05it is OK with you, let's start closing the gap. If you would just

1:46:05 > 1:46:10get on with it, we would be appreciative. We have a plane to

1:46:10 > 1:46:14catch. This is the second half of the Formula One season at the end

1:46:14 > 1:46:21of this lap and Fernando Alonso just 1.6 seconds off the lead in

1:46:21 > 1:46:27third place. This is shaping up to be another classic. We're on board

1:46:27 > 1:46:35with Jenson Button. The last time I looked he was 7.3 seconds behaind

1:46:35 > 1:46:43Adrian Sutil now he is 0.5 behind him. Up the road is rest Berg in

1:46:43 > 1:46:50sixth. So Jenson Button maybe able to salvage something from today.

1:46:50 > 1:46:56And there is confirmation of the new fastest lap. Still slow. They

1:46:56 > 1:47:03have still got half tanks of fuel. But it is not a quick race. We have

1:47:03 > 1:47:08still got cool track attempts. There will with an -- be an element

1:47:08 > 1:47:14of managing the tyre. They have got to make the option tyre go the

1:47:14 > 1:47:18distance. In we from Pirelli you can do more than a Grand Prix

1:47:18 > 1:47:23distance in term of wear. But performance is the key. If he fall

1:47:23 > 1:47:29off the cliff not only will he lose time. You Daid good job on brakes,

1:47:29 > 1:47:37come rear wards if you need. Two clicks rear ward on the brakes.

1:47:37 > 1:47:43Mark Webber has pitted. Mark Webber pits from the lead. So Ferrari were

1:47:43 > 1:47:50rate. That left rear just about on in time. Ferrari were rigt. I hope

1:47:50 > 1:47:57that left rear did go on. They stand these tyres up and I'm

1:47:57 > 1:48:04hearing that use lotless camber and lean in at the top less than I'm

1:48:04 > 1:48:11used to see. It is to protect the Pirellis from overheating on the

1:48:11 > 1:48:17inside shoulder. And we see Karun Chandhock spinning in the fast

1:48:17 > 1:48:24chicane. The Michael Schumacher chicane. And not for the first time.

1:48:24 > 1:48:30A gravel track you drive out is a rubbish gravel track. They're not

1:48:30 > 1:48:35designed to hold cars in there, but to slow you down. The reason I call

1:48:35 > 1:48:40it the Michael Schumacher chicane it is actually called the

1:48:40 > 1:48:43Schumacher S. Good stuff and then chicane there is the one that he

1:48:43 > 1:48:47designed and people said it is because he suited him in his

1:48:47 > 1:48:53Ferrari back in the day. That is the chicane now and Lewis Hamilton

1:48:53 > 1:48:57leads from Fernando Alonso. There is 0.6 of a second between. Lewis

1:48:57 > 1:49:02Hamilton will duck inside that orange bollard that they have to go

1:49:02 > 1:49:07inside into the pit lane. Fernando Alonso the winner at Silverstone,

1:49:07 > 1:49:12will come through and lead this Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton pits.

1:49:12 > 1:49:18So it will be interesting now. Mark Webber's got Heikki Kovalinan in

1:49:18 > 1:49:22front of him. He has got the fresher tyres. I haven't seen the

1:49:22 > 1:49:26green sectors come up for Mark Webber. I think Lewis Hamilton will

1:49:26 > 1:49:30do it. Mark Webber crosss the finish line and look at that. Where

1:49:30 > 1:49:34is Mark Webber? He has done him. Lewis Hamilton is back in the lead.

1:49:34 > 1:49:40With traffic and a not spectacular outlap, it has helped and Mark

1:49:40 > 1:49:47Webber, can he go around the vout side and reclaim the lead? I can't

1:49:47 > 1:49:55see Lewis Hamilton yielding that. A shove to say no way, get out of my

1:49:55 > 1:50:01way and blue smoke coming out of back of McLaren -- of the McLaren.

1:50:01 > 1:50:09What does not look healthy. I hope that is not the first signs of a

1:50:09 > 1:50:12problem for Lewis Hamilton. We're used now to these cars being

1:50:12 > 1:50:17bullet-proof reliability-wise. Let's hope that was just some oil

1:50:17 > 1:50:24from sitting in the pits. We have Ferrari coming out for Fernando

1:50:24 > 1:50:28Alonso. This is Jenson Button going down the inside of Adrian Sutil.

1:50:28 > 1:50:33That is for seventh place. This is Mark Webber as he sees Lewis

1:50:33 > 1:50:40Hamilton coming out. He ducks under neath and you go around the outside

1:50:40 > 1:50:44of turn two, normally, except the atro turf is full of water today.

1:50:44 > 1:50:51That was a little love kiss from Lewis Hamilton on Mark Webber. Just

1:50:51 > 1:50:54a warning. Then we saw the right bank of that car of Lewis Hamilton

1:50:54 > 1:50:58putting out some blue smoke as Fernando Alonso pits for the second

1:50:58 > 1:51:02time this afternoon. This will be very close. Lewis Hamilton leads

1:51:02 > 1:51:06Mark Webber over the line and there they are in the background and

1:51:06 > 1:51:10Fernando Alonso gets up to speed. What is going on? How does that

1:51:10 > 1:51:15work? Normally you get the undercut with the fresh new tyre. We have

1:51:15 > 1:51:20seen it not working twice. Lewis Hamilton then fancies. He is going

1:51:20 > 1:51:25to make this one stick. Fernando Alonso was caught napping

1:51:25 > 1:51:29completely. Lewis Hamilton drives around the outsaid. The thing he

1:51:29 > 1:51:32stopped Mark Webber doing and steals that lead back. Another

1:51:32 > 1:51:36brilliant move from Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso just didn't

1:51:36 > 1:51:41cover it off. Lewis Hamilton is in permanent attack mode. Like

1:51:41 > 1:51:44Fernando Alonso was yes, I have got the lead, well done boys and then

1:51:44 > 1:51:49forgot that Lewis Hamilton could carry that fresh heat that he has

1:51:49 > 1:51:54got in his new tyres. Carry the confidence around the outside of

1:51:54 > 1:51:58turn two. Put yourself in Mark Webber's place. He came in with a

1:51:58 > 1:52:02lead and he is now down into third and doesn't appear to have done

1:52:02 > 1:52:06anything wrong. I don't think it was the fastest pit stop in the

1:52:06 > 1:52:11world. Maybe that is the answer. The pit stops haven't been as sharp

1:52:11 > 1:52:16as they might have been. The one explanation for why the undercut is

1:52:16 > 1:52:21not working is the new tyres are not getting up to temperature. In

1:52:21 > 1:52:26qualifying they were doing two or three laps before delivering the

1:52:26 > 1:52:33fastest timement it worked for Mark at the start. We may have to

1:52:33 > 1:52:36analyse this later. Well there is the in and the out laps and the

1:52:36 > 1:52:42Stitt stop time and how long it takes the mechanics. Lewis Hamilton

1:52:42 > 1:52:45does the new fastest lap. We are going to see a replay of that

1:52:45 > 1:52:49sensational move. Fernando Alonso has gone wide in turn one and

1:52:49 > 1:52:53doesn't cover off the outside of two. And that was the point where

1:52:53 > 1:52:58Lewis Hamilton was slapping Mark Webber off the race track and

1:52:58 > 1:53:03Fernando Alonso didn't try anything of sort and the McLaren boys were

1:53:03 > 1:53:06enjoying that. As you know, it is tremendously embarrassing to be

1:53:06 > 1:53:09overtaken with someone around the outside. How much extra does that

1:53:09 > 1:53:14hurt when it is Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. There noise love

1:53:14 > 1:53:19lost between those two. -- there is no love lost between those two.

1:53:19 > 1:53:24Three different engineser three different drivers. And just two and

1:53:24 > 1:53:30a half seconds cover them as we're on lap 34 of the Grand Prix. We

1:53:30 > 1:53:36have seen some magnificent driving. Very little contact with these

1:53:36 > 1:53:40front runners. They're driving supremely well. And it looked like

1:53:40 > 1:53:46Mark Webber had been freed up to go and take this Grand Prix. Lewis

1:53:46 > 1:53:55Hamilton does another new fastest first. I hope h he doesn't do what

1:53:55 > 1:54:00we have seen him do, of taking too much life out of tyre too early. I

1:54:00 > 1:54:06as Pirelli Morphing the tyres. Webber loses a back end. He won't

1:54:06 > 1:54:09get a penalty, because he has gain nod advantage. As Pirelli making

1:54:09 > 1:54:14tyres more durable, if the advantage of having a car that is

1:54:14 > 1:54:20light on its tyres is going and whether the game is changing of you

1:54:20 > 1:54:27can't get tyre temperature rather than you need to protect it. Jenson

1:54:27 > 1:54:31Button tries to go down the outside of Rosberg for sixth place. Rosberg

1:54:31 > 1:54:36parks his car well. But can he get on the KERS and get up the inside?

1:54:36 > 1:54:42He can't, but he should get a nice slip stream down the pit straight.

1:54:42 > 1:54:47We know the McLaren is fast. They have both got Mercedes engines.

1:54:47 > 1:54:52Rosberg parks it on the inside. Look at the speed of the Mercedes.

1:54:52 > 1:54:58Mercedes versus the McLaren. He has gone too deep, button takes the

1:54:58 > 1:55:06position and he is up to sixth. Next target is Sebastian Vettel who

1:55:06 > 1:55:15is still lapping some 1.2 off the pace. He might be meat for Jenson

1:55:15 > 1:55:24Button to chase after. Lewis Hamilton then leads by 2.4 now.

1:55:24 > 1:55:29Four seconds covers the top three. They're 7.1 ahead of Felipe Massa.

1:55:29 > 1:55:35Nico Rosberg just on the inside, the dustier line. Lobs up that

1:55:35 > 1:55:39inside front and you -- locks up that inside front. It was just no

1:55:39 > 1:55:44option for him but to try and reduce. You see the onboard of Mark

1:55:44 > 1:55:48Webber and the braking phase. Just getting a bit messy. We know he has

1:55:48 > 1:55:57taken a ppblty for losing time. He won't have gained any penalty for

1:55:57 > 1:56:06missing the corner. Lewis Hamilton out front has done another Fasest -

1:56:06 > 1:56:12- fastest lap. Is that Jenson Button has missed a chicane stkph

1:56:12 > 1:56:18he has got a problem. O' -? He has got a problem. Jensen we need to

1:56:18 > 1:56:24box this lap. Twofr retire the car. We have a hydraulics -- we have to

1:56:24 > 1:56:30retire the car. We have a hydraulics problem. The hydraulics

1:56:30 > 1:56:35work many things on the car. What a shame. It was a great come back for

1:56:35 > 1:56:40Jenson Button. An awful start again. He has got to the start sorted out.

1:56:40 > 1:56:44But he was driving nicely. I wonder why we're seeing so much

1:56:44 > 1:56:53reliability, so many reliability problems today. Do you think

1:56:53 > 1:56:59leaping across the kufbs on the chicanes? These cars have been

1:56:59 > 1:57:04bullet-proof. But Three retirements now. And there is the race leader,

1:57:04 > 1:57:10who leads by 2.7 second over Fernando Alonso and he is half a

1:57:10 > 1:57:19second up on this current lap as well. It is coming towards Lewis

1:57:19 > 1:57:25Hamilton then. They have to pit again to put on the medium compound

1:57:25 > 1:57:31tyre. It is somewhere between 1.5 and 2 seconds slower. Lewis

1:57:31 > 1:57:39Hamilton again a 35.0. Another new fastest lap. Fernando Alonso 3.1

1:57:39 > 1:57:43adrift and poor old Jenson Button is reduced to spectating. Mark

1:57:43 > 1:57:53Webber has done his personal best. But it cities eight tenths slower

1:57:53 > 1:57:57than the leader. -- but it is still eight tenths slower than the leader.

1:57:57 > 1:58:03Adrian Sutil is released into sixth place. That was a good example of

1:58:03 > 1:58:12where you can lose time in your track position. Rosberg got deep

1:58:12 > 1:58:19into the turn 13 chicane and lost time. He will be in again, won't

1:58:20 > 1:58:24he? He puts another set of soft tyre on. Rosberg, that his his

1:58:24 > 1:58:27second stop. He will have to stop again, otherwise he will take

1:58:27 > 1:58:33personality. Michael Schumacher is yet to stop for the second time. He

1:58:34 > 1:58:43has had various spins and adventures. Kobayashi sweeps passed

1:58:44 > 1:58:44

1:58:44 > 1:58:51Rosberg as well. Kobayashi then ninth. That will be eighth now he

1:58:51 > 1:58:55has passed Rosberg. Crucially, as we get into the latter stages, any

1:58:55 > 1:59:00attempts at undercut go out of the window. You want to go as long as

1:59:00 > 1:59:09you can on these option tyres. Because even a badly worn option

1:59:09 > 1:59:15will still be faster than a very new and fresh prime. OK information

1:59:15 > 1:59:20to help with the next pit stop we need your left hand clutch paddle

1:59:20 > 1:59:25further away from you. Is that a primary clutch he holds down while

1:59:25 > 1:59:30he is waiting to to launch away from the pit stop? For me that will

1:59:30 > 1:59:34be the secondary clutch. If he is saying have the right hand clutch

1:59:34 > 1:59:39further away. That is closer to the front of the car. The left hand

1:59:39 > 1:59:43clutch will be fully depressed against the back of the steering

1:59:43 > 1:59:47wheel. In orders, you have got to - - in other words you have to be

1:59:47 > 1:59:52careful as you launch out of pit stop. Michael Schumacher pits for

1:59:52 > 1:59:57the second time. Kobayashi there will now take up seventh place then

1:59:57 > 2:00:07as Michael Schumacher pits. Kobayashi has only pitted once as

2:00:07 > 2:00:12

2:00:12 > 2:00:20pit again later in the Grand Prix. He should get some points from

2:00:20 > 2:00:30their Co -- though, Michael Schumacher. Rosberg has Record Co

2:00:30 > 2:00:30

2:00:30 > 2:00:38by Ashley. -- Rosberg has recalled Kobayashi. Mark Webber does not

2:00:38 > 2:00:43have the pace that he had. You do get a variation on different sets

2:00:43 > 2:00:48of tyres. He is significantly slower. The car is a lot lighter at

2:00:48 > 2:00:55this stage of the race. You have fuel effect, the track temperature

2:00:55 > 2:01:00has remained pretty consistent. He could have a KERS issue. We do not

2:01:00 > 2:01:06get all of the transitions played in a. It does seem strange that he

2:01:06 > 2:01:12has lost some pace. Kobayashi will be a sitting duck from Rosberg if

2:01:12 > 2:01:20he is in the DRS zone which he is. But Rosberg has used up his KERS.

2:01:20 > 2:01:24He is relying only on the DRS. amazed Kobayashi stayed on the

2:01:24 > 2:01:30racetrack, on that one. You lose at least a quarter of your stopping

2:01:31 > 2:01:37capacity when the front wheel is turning because the tie needs to be

2:01:37 > 2:01:44rotating to give you retardation. Rosberg sweeping down the outside

2:01:44 > 2:01:49this time of Kobayashi. He can turn in and claim the position and

2:01:49 > 2:01:54Rosberg runs out of racetrack. It almost seems as if Kobayashi was

2:01:54 > 2:02:00ready to yield and then got on the throttle and closed him clean off

2:02:00 > 2:02:07the racetrack. Rosberg is beginning to come alive. Was he just

2:02:07 > 2:02:17protecting those tyres? We have a Hispania Racing coach sitting down

2:02:17 > 2:02:17

2:02:17 > 2:02:22the pit straight. -- coasting down the pit straight. He is just

2:02:22 > 2:02:31creeping, hopefully we will get an image on our screen. It is scary to

2:02:31 > 2:02:36cross the pit lane when a driver is flooring the throttle. Nico Rosberg

2:02:36 > 2:02:41is still trying to pass Kobayashi. They are on a different strategy

2:02:41 > 2:02:45and it is costing Rosberg a lot of time. He is under slightly less

2:02:45 > 2:02:50pressure now there are sadly Jenson Button has dropped out of the race.

2:02:50 > 2:02:55That is the end of a 14 race finishing straight for Button. It

2:02:55 > 2:03:00continues his bad luck and poor form here. He has had one podium

2:03:00 > 2:03:03finish in 10 starts here at the Nurburgring. It is not a great

2:03:03 > 2:03:09place for Button. He was the third retirement of the day which

2:03:09 > 2:03:15includes Barrichello and Heidfeld. With 20 laps to go, how late can

2:03:15 > 2:03:20they stop for the harder prime tyres? Do you 3 -- do you think we

2:03:20 > 2:03:26might see them coming in with one or two laps to go? Kobayashi left a

2:03:26 > 2:03:30gap for Rosberg. Rosberg just about kept on the track and he is through

2:03:30 > 2:03:35to seventh place. Let's not forget what a great job Adrian Sutil is

2:03:35 > 2:03:40doing for Force Indias. He has stopped only once and he is in

2:03:40 > 2:03:45sixth place. He is behind Vettel who is beginning to close in on

2:03:45 > 2:03:50Felipe Massa. Mrs Rosberg, the better of a dummy really. He looked

2:03:50 > 2:03:54like he was going left and put it down the right-hand side. There was

2:03:54 > 2:04:03the drop away into the turn one apex. Great driving from the cave.

2:04:03 > 2:04:06He has been very assertive when it comes to mixing with traffic. We

2:04:06 > 2:04:16see Vitantonio look see walking back. His car has been parked at

2:04:16 > 2:04:21

2:04:21 > 2:04:31the end of the pit lane. I thought he had stalled. He has also put the

2:04:31 > 2:04:32

2:04:32 > 2:04:38soft tyre on. He should be able to Claire. It was 3.1 seconds, it was

2:04:38 > 2:04:48a good stop. A don't think Kovalainen will want to attack him

2:04:48 > 2:04:49

2:04:49 > 2:04:54too hard. Kovalainen his 16th. Liuzzi has now retired. Michael

2:04:55 > 2:05:03Schumacher is trying not to lose another front wing. He is at

2:05:03 > 2:05:06against the Toro Rosso, writing to the final corner. Let's see what

2:05:06 > 2:05:11Schumacher can do down the pit straight. Alguersuari is watching

2:05:11 > 2:05:18him closely. Schumacher does a dummy dive and into what is a nice,

2:05:18 > 2:05:28white piece of track. And with equal grip across it, it is a great

2:05:28 > 2:05:31

2:05:31 > 2:05:35overtaking place, turn one at the Nurburgring. Feisty driving, yet

2:05:35 > 2:05:39again from Michael. It is a pity he had that spin because he was

2:05:39 > 2:05:49writing their with Rosberg who is now in seventh place. Here is

2:05:49 > 2:06:00

2:06:00 > 2:06:09second stop of the afternoon. He was in fourth place. And there we

2:06:09 > 2:06:14have Sebastian in the background. It was a 3.2 stop but don't look it

2:06:14 > 2:06:24up into 101. What was going on there? Vettel was very close behind

2:06:24 > 2:06:31

2:06:31 > 2:06:34corners. He can't afford, even a fifth place for battle would be

2:06:34 > 2:06:44better than losing a friend corn and - dropping out of the Grand

2:06:44 > 2:07:00

2:07:00 > 2:07:05He is 3.4 ahead of Alonso. Hamilton is still pumping the laps in and

2:07:05 > 2:07:148.7 ahead of Webber. Hamilton has been so much faster in this phase

2:07:14 > 2:07:24of the Grand Prix. They are 20 seconds ahead of master and the

2:07:24 > 2:07:33

2:07:33 > 2:07:39Vettel. They have. Once up to it mistakes from Sebastian Vettel?

2:07:39 > 2:07:43Maybe in his first year when he was a Toro Rosso new boy. Maybe he has

2:07:43 > 2:07:48some other issue that he definitely seems all at sea this afternoon.

2:07:48 > 2:07:54were talking about the tyres and how they might only run a harder

2:07:54 > 2:07:59time at the end of the race. RADIO: The prime tyres 1.5 seconds slower,

2:07:59 > 2:08:03we need to make sure we take this tyre as long as possible. That

2:08:03 > 2:08:08confirms what we have been talking about. Eddie Jordan has been down

2:08:08 > 2:08:13to Pirelli to try to find out more. In the Dow have. They have

2:08:13 > 2:08:20confirmed to me, the soft tyres all the same as it has been all season

2:08:20 > 2:08:25long. They believe the difference in track temperature, 18 degrees

2:08:25 > 2:08:30today, five degrees colder, is the main difference. That is the

2:08:30 > 2:08:36culprit in making the undercut not work like it has in the past.

2:08:36 > 2:08:42just track temperature. That is 17 degrees at the moment. That is

2:08:42 > 2:08:52Vettel remaining in fifth place behind Felipe Massa. RADIO: Brakes

2:08:52 > 2:08:52

2:08:52 > 2:08:57are OK. It must have been a temperature issue. Did you see

2:08:57 > 2:09:02anyone pulling take off at the stop? You thought there was an

2:09:02 > 2:09:12issue. Maybe they were removing the tape. I thought he did not get away

2:09:12 > 2:09:14

2:09:14 > 2:09:20very quickly. It may have been the audio dropping out briefly. Massa

2:09:20 > 2:09:30and Vettel have both done their personal best. They are on the

2:09:30 > 2:09:32

2:09:32 > 2:09:38leaders'' race -- pace now. RADIO: We were two tenth faster. They are

2:09:38 > 2:09:42trying to prolong in this extent. It is pretty obvious, I would have

2:09:42 > 2:09:47thought. We are not hearing anything revolutionary there. Who

2:09:47 > 2:09:53wants to put a set of tyres on which are at least a second or 1.5

2:09:53 > 2:09:58seconds slower than an old set you are taking off? Not me. And clearly,

2:09:58 > 2:10:03not them. That is what we were asking the question, with 16 laps

2:10:03 > 2:10:09to go, how late what they leave it? One or two laps before the end? The

2:10:09 > 2:10:14last lap? We saw Vettel did that once, literally picked on the last

2:10:14 > 2:10:20lap. If these tyres are hanging on, why not leave it until the last

2:10:20 > 2:10:24lap? It was monster 2010 that we had Sebastian Vettel doing that and

2:10:24 > 2:10:30what a great comeback so we could see a lot of activity with one lap

2:10:30 > 2:10:37to go in the pit lane -- in Monza. Four we have lost the Vitantonio

2:10:38 > 2:10:42Liuzzi, Nick Heidfeld,... Massa does not bother with the second

2:10:42 > 2:10:46part of the chicane, he was so late on the brakes there. He has to be

2:10:46 > 2:10:50careful that he has not gone fast on this sector than the previous

2:10:50 > 2:11:00lap otherwise the stewards will say he has gained an advantage. He did

2:11:00 > 2:11:01

2:11:01 > 2:11:09not, he will get away with that one. They are fighting over fourth and

2:11:09 > 2:11:14fifth places in this Grand Prix. They are second -- seven seconds

2:11:14 > 2:11:17behind Mark Webber. Another retirement was Jenson Button.

2:11:17 > 2:11:23so disappointing to talk to you during races, tell us what

2:11:23 > 2:11:28happened? The first lap, I had a terrible first lap. Then I couldn't

2:11:28 > 2:11:35get past Petrov. I eventually did and then I got past the next two

2:11:35 > 2:11:40guys. The pace was good. Compared to Massa and Vettel. It was all

2:11:40 > 2:11:43looking exciting and then we had a hydraulics issue and we had to

2:11:43 > 2:11:48retire the car on safety grounds. You never know what will happen

2:11:48 > 2:11:52with hydraulics because obviously, the steering is hydraulic and the

2:11:52 > 2:11:57gearshift. We had to retire the car. You had been chipping away and you

2:11:57 > 2:12:01had just got past Rosberg as well, did you think you could have caught

2:12:01 > 2:12:07the guys in front? What are the conditions like? It is pretty low

2:12:07 > 2:12:10grip. The first three, no chance but the next two were looking

2:12:10 > 2:12:16pretty good. Adrian Sutil who were passed before I passed Rosberg is

2:12:16 > 2:12:20catching Massa and Vettel now. We would have had a good race in the

2:12:20 > 2:12:26end. Would not have been top three but fourth was possible. I was

2:12:26 > 2:12:33enjoying myself as well. What will you do now? I will get warm, it is

2:12:33 > 2:12:39absolutely freezing out here. I had some spicy sausage pastor in

2:12:39 > 2:12:49McCarron before I came out, I do not feel cold at all. Maybe that is

2:12:49 > 2:12:50

2:12:50 > 2:12:54what Jenson needs. Don't say it, DC! Hamilton is leading. Michael

2:12:54 > 2:13:00Schumacher up the inside of Vitaly Petrov and they both failed to make

2:13:00 > 2:13:06the chicane although Petrov does get through. What will the stewards

2:13:06 > 2:13:11they? Petrov will have to let Mike will take the place back because he

2:13:11 > 2:13:16has gained an advantage by not taking the corner. I agree with you.

2:13:16 > 2:13:22Whether he does is another matter. I think it is irrelevant anyway

2:13:22 > 2:13:32because Schumacher takes the place. Webber is the fastest man in the

2:13:32 > 2:13:33

2:13:33 > 2:13:41middle sector. Hamilton's gap is believed -- beginning to come down

2:13:41 > 2:13:46now. Alonso is getting on the charge. Michael has track a

2:13:46 > 2:13:50position now. Petrov tries to turn in but there is a Mercedes in the

2:13:51 > 2:13:56way. They have come together couple of times this year and that looked

2:13:56 > 2:14:04like it had the potential to be a third time. Michael will not do his

2:14:04 > 2:14:09tyre any good battle there. Michael did well to complete the course in

2:14:09 > 2:14:16the required weight. That means he is now a pin to ninth place.

2:14:16 > 2:14:20Seventh and ninth for Mercedes. Sutil who has had one stop so far

2:14:20 > 2:14:30remains sixth and presumably, will want to go as far as he can before

2:14:30 > 2:14:52

2:14:52 > 2:14:57he puts the other compound tyres on, who won early on Ince -- in China.

2:14:57 > 2:15:03There is Petrov. Which tyres will they put on? If they are not white,

2:15:03 > 2:15:08he will have to pit again. They are so he can go to the end. Here is

2:15:08 > 2:15:18some unusual information for everybody, not least those sitting

2:15:18 > 2:15:26

2:15:26 > 2:15:35on the pit wall and looking at the team-mate Nick Heidfeld it is just

2:15:35 > 2:15:43inspector 80. Looking at the top six -- is just a spectator. And

2:15:43 > 2:15:48looking at the top six, it is interesting. Nick Heidfeld it is

2:15:48 > 2:15:56looking at the television, we should show him his accident!

2:15:56 > 2:16:06Because he went so far off the track, pay attention! A one-handed

2:16:06 > 2:16:11

2:16:11 > 2:16:16spinner. That is Sebastian Vettel, fastest man in the first sector,

2:16:16 > 2:16:23normally the territory of Lewis Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel has just

2:16:23 > 2:16:33come alive. It pretty impressive lap time he has just done. -- a

2:16:33 > 2:16:37

2:16:37 > 2:16:45pretty impressive. Sebastian Vettel, fastest lap of the race. 0.9

2:16:45 > 2:16:55seconds behind now. What purpose does that have to tell Felipe Massa

2:16:55 > 2:16:55

2:16:55 > 2:17:03or that? -- that. He is telling him that for a reason, but what is it?

2:17:03 > 2:17:09What can he do? Nothing, it is just a turn of phrase. Massa has just

2:17:09 > 2:17:14responded with the fastest middle second -- middle sector. It is a

2:17:14 > 2:17:21long-winded way to say, get a move on! And if he can do that time, he

2:17:21 > 2:17:31should do it every middle sector. 0.7 seconds between these two now.

2:17:31 > 2:17:32

2:17:32 > 2:17:36The fastest man on the track. Adrian Sutil pits now so he would

2:17:36 > 2:17:41presumably put on the medium compound. Sebastian Vettel done his

2:17:41 > 2:17:51personal best first sector of the race on those tyres so it is not

2:17:51 > 2:17:52

2:17:53 > 2:17:58slowing him down a lot. Fuel loads are down and the soft tyres are

2:17:58 > 2:18:04wearing down. Mark Webber has just done a new fastest middle sector of

2:18:04 > 2:18:14the lack. They are finding determination from somewhere.

2:18:14 > 2:18:17

2:18:17 > 2:18:25The track surface is obviously clearing up. The track conditions,

2:18:25 > 2:18:35this was the worst the track has been all weekend. So maybe that gap

2:18:35 > 2:18:39

2:18:39 > 2:18:45is reducing. Hamilton leading the Grand Prix. 11 to go, including

2:18:45 > 2:18:52this. And Vettel looks like he France's fourth place. He has only

2:18:52 > 2:18:57once gone slightly backwards in his Championship crusade. And he locks

2:18:57 > 2:19:07that right front and Vettel can do nothing about it. And he will start

2:19:07 > 2:19:08

2:19:08 > 2:19:13to lose grip. You lose a bit of front grip on the left-handers,

2:19:13 > 2:19:19especially if you burn it up like that. Vettel slightly backwards in

2:19:19 > 2:19:26his Championship crusade. Back in the Chinese Grand Prix, he was down

2:19:26 > 2:19:30to a 21 point lead having gone in with a lead of 24. He has and 80

2:19:30 > 2:19:35point advantage over Mark Webber going into this and it looks like

2:19:35 > 2:19:42it will go backwards for the second time this season. Mark Webber has

2:19:42 > 2:19:48responded with the fastest middle sector of the race and his tyres

2:19:48 > 2:19:57are older than those of Sebastian Vettel. A bit of track devolution

2:19:57 > 2:20:04is going on. It is turning on his head. Mark Webber is quicker now

2:20:04 > 2:20:09than Hamilton. It is like, and now I can just take everything out of

2:20:09 > 2:20:16these tyres! And they might have had the news that behind them, 44

2:20:16 > 2:20:26seconds behind them, who is that in the pit lane? Behind them, it

2:20:26 > 2:20:30

2:20:30 > 2:20:34drivers are going -- the drivers are going faster. Adrian Sutil came

2:20:34 > 2:20:41out in seventh place after his second stop, 10 seconds of Michael

2:20:41 > 2:20:51Schumacher who has yet to pit, so it is looking good for Adrian Sutil.

2:20:51 > 2:20:56

2:20:56 > 2:21:01That was a clumsy downshift, wasn't it? I wonder if that was a mistake.

2:21:01 > 2:21:11Tyre ands starting to go off. McLaren on in the pit lane and

2:21:11 > 2:21:12

2:21:12 > 2:21:17Hamilton is going in. -- our remit. For he is the first in. And these

2:21:17 > 2:21:27are the medium compound slow work tyres they are obliged to use or

2:21:27 > 2:21:35they will get a 0.5 second penalty -- slower tyres. None of the key

2:21:35 > 2:21:41runners had to new soft tyres. It is now getting out and an ailing

2:21:41 > 2:21:48the lack for Hamilton -- and name link. He had a seven second lead

2:21:48 > 2:21:56when he came in. A distinctive colour change on the tyres. And now

2:21:56 > 2:22:02we are in the critical phase of the lap. We know which three will be on

2:22:02 > 2:22:08the podium. It seems as if Ferrari will respond immediately to that

2:22:08 > 2:22:17move by Lewis Hamilton. He said his tyres needed to go and McLaren

2:22:17 > 2:22:25reacted instantly. It will be fascinating to see how this plays

2:22:25 > 2:22:32out. Paul di Resta is in ninth place and has to stop again for a

2:22:32 > 2:22:38new set of tyres. Fernando Alonso leads the Grand Prix for the second

2:22:38 > 2:22:46time this afternoon. What can he do? Does he picked? He is happy

2:22:46 > 2:22:56with his tyres. -- does he pit? Ferrari mechanics of going back

2:22:56 > 2:22:57

2:22:57 > 2:23:01into the garage as if there have been communication issues. Do you

2:23:01 > 2:23:05think they are gauging the sector by sector? Mark Webber is flying.

2:23:05 > 2:23:11Will they punish McLaren have for that early stop or was it a smart

2:23:12 > 2:23:18move that will make the difference? We do not know and we are about to

2:23:18 > 2:23:23find out. We have to watch it corner by corner, Wycherley. There

2:23:23 > 2:23:33is enough Crich in Sector One but not in the middle part of a lack. -

2:23:33 > 2:23:38

2:23:38 > 2:23:45- enough quick. -- grip. Crucially for Alonso, he got the advantage of

2:23:45 > 2:23:50seeing what Lewis Hamilton was able to do. They were just bring out the

2:23:50 > 2:23:57next set of tyres during the pit stop. -- and they will just. Good

2:23:57 > 2:24:07thinking! And there is no need to pit, and the same for Mark Webber.

2:24:07 > 2:24:15Hamilton first sector was 0.5 seconds faster than Fernando Alonso.

2:24:15 > 2:24:22He lost to Mark Webber in that middle set to. And Alonso is going

2:24:22 > 2:24:30to pit, and that plays into the hands of Lewis Hamilton. I wondered

2:24:30 > 2:24:36if Alonso might stay a bit longer. But Mark Webber carries on. So we

2:24:36 > 2:24:42wait for Hamilton to deliver his first full flying lap. And he is in

2:24:42 > 2:24:50the background. There is only one McLaren in this race and it is

2:24:50 > 2:24:59Lewis Hamilton, and he comfortably regained the positioned. And Alonso

2:24:59 > 2:25:04has got to find out... And now it is about Mark Webber. And Lewis

2:25:05 > 2:25:12Hamilton has done his fastest of the Grand Prix on these tyres.

2:25:12 > 2:25:19Surely Mark Webber has to pick? Unless he thinks he has more speed.

2:25:19 > 2:25:28-- to be picked. Not even one-tenth of a second between them. Mark

2:25:28 > 2:25:36Webber has to respond in this flat. -- in this lap. Be soft tyres are

2:25:36 > 2:25:41wearing down. -- the soft tyres. That moment has arrived, Mark

2:25:41 > 2:25:51Webber has Karun Chandhok in front of him and he needs to clear. And

2:25:51 > 2:25:58these two are yet to come in. is it, Mark, pushed out! -- push

2:25:58 > 2:26:08out. It delayed message, I would have expected that a couple of laps

2:26:08 > 2:26:08

2:26:08 > 2:26:15ago. Mark Webber crosses the line, it is too slow. He has more traffic,

2:26:15 > 2:26:20Nico Rosberg. Nico Rosberg just gets out of the way, it is not

2:26:20 > 2:26:24working. Red Bull have nothing to lose, they were third of free and

2:26:24 > 2:26:33they thought they might go and a different route but it has not

2:26:33 > 2:26:43worked out -- a third of three. And other personal best for Hamilton.

2:26:43 > 2:26:43

2:26:43 > 2:26:46But the fastest of the race is still Sebastian Vettel. It looks

2:26:46 > 2:26:53like Lewis Hamilton has used the cool conditions absolutely

2:26:53 > 2:26:59perfectly this afternoon. McLaren, they took a bit of pain in

2:26:59 > 2:27:07a few races with their strategy this year, but they got it right.

2:27:07 > 2:27:12And Vettel still keeps attacking Massa. Mark Webber leads but he has

2:27:12 > 2:27:22to pit again, that is for certain. He has not put on immediate

2:27:22 > 2:27:29

2:27:29 > 2:27:39compound tyre yet. -- tyres. So Mark Webber is now consigned to

2:27:39 > 2:27:42

2:27:42 > 2:27:50third place. He will come out three or four Macro seconds behind Alonso.

2:27:50 > 2:28:00-- four seconds. And there is a fight for fourth and fifth place.

2:28:00 > 2:28:03

2:28:03 > 2:28:12Five to go. This is the 25th Grand Prix held here at the Nurburgring.

2:28:12 > 2:28:21And Vettel seems to have no answer to the speed and positioning of

2:28:21 > 2:28:28Felipe Massa or's car. -- car. Do you think he will risk a crazy

2:28:28 > 2:28:38overtake? This is his radio. patient, be smart. That is the

2:28:38 > 2:28:39

2:28:39 > 2:28:43answer! The clear calming influence of his engineers. But Sebastien it

2:28:43 > 2:28:48must want to do a little something for the home crowd. People have

2:28:48 > 2:28:57questioned if he can race, he has only ever raced at the front, they

2:28:57 > 2:29:03say. Can he catch Felipe Massa with four laps to go? Michael Schumacher

2:29:03 > 2:29:10now up into seventh place ahead of Nico Rosberg. Michael Schumacher

2:29:10 > 2:29:20has only stopped twice and he has to stop again. But he is catching

2:29:20 > 2:29:23

2:29:23 > 2:29:31Adrian Sutil quite quickly. Mark Webber is now going to pick from

2:29:31 > 2:29:41the lead. Four to go including this. Hamilton takes over the lead, 2.9

2:29:41 > 2:29:46

2:29:46 > 2:29:52seconds clear. We can tell you that Mark Webber is comfortably behind

2:29:52 > 2:29:58Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. Nobody else on track apart from

2:29:58 > 2:30:08Jerome d'Ambrosio that he needs to clear. The top three are still

2:30:08 > 2:30:15

2:30:15 > 2:30:19will be very frustrated, having led the race, after the first pit stop

2:30:19 > 2:30:25he came back out into third place having done really nothing wrong.

2:30:25 > 2:30:32It was all about traffic and stop times. RADIO: U r three seconds

2:30:32 > 2:30:42clear of Alonso, you are the fastest car on the circuit. That

2:30:42 > 2:30:42

2:30:42 > 2:30:48will be music to his ears. As if he needed a reminder. He said his

2:30:48 > 2:30:54qualifying lap was the best he can remember. How could well this

2:30:54 > 2:31:00victory be? It is his 81st Grand Prix start. It would put him back

2:31:00 > 2:31:05on level terms with Vettel if he can get through these last few laps.

2:31:05 > 2:31:12Three, to be precise. Lewis Hamilton, after a sensational

2:31:12 > 2:31:22qualifying performance. There is a final stop of Schumacher's. Now he

2:31:22 > 2:31:37

2:31:37 > 2:31:44has got his hands full. Hamilton again at the end of the race to put

2:31:44 > 2:31:49the medium tyres on. Sutil his sixth. He is about a dozen seconds

2:31:50 > 2:31:54clear of Nico Rosberg. Adrian Sutil looks as if he is in for a great

2:31:54 > 2:31:58chance for a result here for Force Indias. I wonder if we are seeing

2:31:58 > 2:32:02some showmanship there. We had the Red Bull mechanics come out into

2:32:02 > 2:32:08the pit lane and then they went back in again. They look like they

2:32:08 > 2:32:13were going to do a stop. I wonder if it was to force Ferrari's hand?

2:32:13 > 2:32:17If the race was to finish now, Hamilton would be a clear third in

2:32:17 > 2:32:27the race championship, five points behind Mark Webber. Vettel still

2:32:27 > 2:32:28

2:32:28 > 2:32:34way out in front. This is all about fourth place. He was going to blink

2:32:34 > 2:32:43first? Massa and Vettel. They both have to pit again before the end of

2:32:43 > 2:32:46the Grand Prix. You have the Ferrari mechanics lingering around

2:32:46 > 2:32:55their pit stop box say you cannot tell when they are coming out and

2:32:55 > 2:33:05they are coming out now. Q RADIO: If he pits, stay out of, did the

2:33:05 > 2:33:05

2:33:05 > 2:33:11opposite of massive. -- did the opposite of Massa. What Rocky was

2:33:11 > 2:33:17saying is if he goes in, stay out that he did not. They will probably

2:33:17 > 2:33:22follow each other in. You do pass the finish line to come into the

2:33:22 > 2:33:27pits. We saw Michael Schumacher do that in Silverstone in the 1990s.

2:33:27 > 2:33:31The way the pit lane is set out here, Ferrari are further down the

2:33:31 > 2:33:41pit lane so technically, if they do like for like stocks, Ferrari have

2:33:41 > 2:33:46the advantage. They are unlikely to be hit with an unsafe release.

2:33:46 > 2:33:52Massa needs to get his car out in front of Sebastian Vettel. It is a

2:33:52 > 2:33:57pit stop race. It looks terribly calm and there. They both have to

2:33:57 > 2:34:02pit. They are both driving the wheels of those things. The tyres

2:34:02 > 2:34:08have yellow markings. They need a shiny new said with white markings

2:34:08 > 2:34:15on them to finish the Grand Prix, to avoid a penalty. They have got

2:34:15 > 2:34:19to do it at the end of this lap. Vettel, by not following that

2:34:19 > 2:34:24instruction, took away his best chance of doing that. Hamilton

2:34:24 > 2:34:28dozen new fastest lap of the race to build his lead. They will file

2:34:28 > 2:34:33into the pit lane, line astern. Either Vettel did not understand

2:34:33 > 2:34:39the message, did not receive it or chose to ignore it because it is a

2:34:40 > 2:34:45pit stop race now. He nearly ran into the back of him! Massa was

2:34:45 > 2:34:51quicker on the brakes to get a car down to the speed limit. Here we go.

2:34:51 > 2:34:57Who has got out first? Look at that! He is ahead of fame. Ferrari

2:34:57 > 2:35:01were too slow. Massa was too slow into the pit lane, Ferrari were too

2:35:01 > 2:35:04slow on the stock and Vettel takes the position going into the final

2:35:04 > 2:35:09lap. Maldonado is coming through but he is out of the picture

2:35:09 > 2:35:15because he has been lap. Vettel crucially takes fourth place away

2:35:15 > 2:35:24from Felipe Massa or on a final mad - pit stop in order to comply with

2:35:24 > 2:35:28the regulations. This man has won sweeping right-hander. He was

2:35:28 > 2:35:32immense in qualifying to put himself on the front row of the

2:35:32 > 2:35:41grid and one long, easy right hander into a short bit of straight

2:35:41 > 2:35:47to take his 60th victory. -- 16th victory. Lewis Hamilton wins the

2:35:47 > 2:35:54German Grand Prix at Nurburgring, beating Fernando Alonso by 3.9

2:35:54 > 2:35:59seconds. In the background, third place man, Mark Webber complete the

2:35:59 > 2:36:05podium, 9.7 seconds behind. They are one ahead of Vettel and Massa.

2:36:05 > 2:36:10A wonderful drive from Lewis Hamilton. Here is fourth-placed man

2:36:10 > 2:36:17and still championship leader Sebastian Vettel. You have to say,

2:36:17 > 2:36:22whereas Felipe Massa in that picture? Presumably he is still

2:36:23 > 2:36:28there, he is behind Maldonado who is coasting along. He helplessly

2:36:28 > 2:36:31watched as Vettel passed a while they were both in the pit lane. Red

2:36:31 > 2:36:40Bull won the Battle of the pit stops and gained crucial points for

2:36:40 > 2:36:45Sebastian Vettel. Over the line goes Maldonado to secure 14th.

2:36:46 > 2:36:55Fifth for Massa. Sutil, the last man UN lap and here he is, will

2:36:55 > 2:37:01take a well deserved sixth place on a two-stopper. He started inside

2:37:01 > 2:37:06the top 10, kept his head, kept in touch with the leading pack and he

2:37:06 > 2:37:16will now coast over everybody else. Their positions are locked in place

2:37:16 > 2:37:20

2:37:20 > 2:37:29because they were lap. Sutil takes six place,. RADIO: Well done, Lewis,

2:37:29 > 2:37:36fantastic job. That is fantastic, great job. Great job, guys! Great

2:37:36 > 2:37:43job! That was amazing! These are the kind of results we can get.

2:37:43 > 2:37:53Thank you so much for pushing so hard. Great pit stops. BKA also

2:37:53 > 2:37:54

2:37:54 > 2:37:58nice to drive. -- the car was so nice to drive. The car looked

2:37:58 > 2:38:05completely on rails, in the groove. Lewis, his head has been in the

2:38:05 > 2:38:11right place this weekend and so has his car set-up. He made it count.

2:38:11 > 2:38:15One of Webber's stops was a second longer and that crucially lost him

2:38:15 > 2:38:20track position. I think there will be a lot of head scratching going

2:38:20 > 2:38:25on at Red Bull as to how they only managed third and fourth in the

2:38:25 > 2:38:35Grand Prix. Alonso still there in second place. Here is confirmation

2:38:35 > 2:39:09

2:39:09 > 2:39:14Heidfeld all retired. This is Mark Webber. Picking up Fernando Alonso.

2:39:14 > 2:39:20I don't want to spoil everyone's fun. This was a classic image of

2:39:21 > 2:39:25Senna hitching a lift with Nigel Mansell 15 or 16 years ago, but

2:39:25 > 2:39:31this is technically, you're not allowed to do this. I hope the

2:39:31 > 2:39:37stewards take a sympathetic view to it. Both drivers might get a little

2:39:37 > 2:39:41call up for that one. I have sat beside the engine cover a couple of

2:39:41 > 2:39:46times. But felt slightly more comfortable tinny but it did not

2:39:47 > 2:39:50half looking -- look fast even going 30 or 40 miles an hour. Lewis

2:39:50 > 2:39:57Hamilton does not care about that although he is probably wondering

2:39:57 > 2:40:05where they are. There is nobody in his way to jump off the car. A

2:40:05 > 2:40:10supreme performance there in his 81st Grand Prix. Hamilton, the man

2:40:10 > 2:40:17on the day. He is not supposed to go out of the pen. There are a lot

2:40:18 > 2:40:22of little rules being broken here. We are this far at -- we are

2:40:22 > 2:40:25disqualified in the top three, are we? I am just reminding the

2:40:25 > 2:40:30audience of rules and regulations. Isn't there another regulation that

2:40:30 > 2:40:37you have to have a certain amount of fuel in your car for a few will

2:40:37 > 2:40:42test? It Alonso's car has run out of fuel, you have to give a sample

2:40:42 > 2:40:48to the FIA say they can check that out. Finally, Alonso arrives,

2:40:48 > 2:40:58courtesy of Mark Webber and Red Bull. Attacks the fee applied. He

2:44:39 > 2:44:50

2:44:51 > 2:44:57the sponsor of the event. Another Fernando Alonso. Mark Webber

2:44:57 > 2:45:07started on pole. It is the last five pole positions where he has

2:45:07 > 2:45:13

2:45:13 > 2:45:19not gone on to win the race. And mistakes in this race. Every corner

2:45:19 > 2:45:25had to be absolutely right on the money. They had to deliver great in

2:45:25 > 2:45:30and out laps. And the mechanics played their role and it affected

2:45:30 > 2:45:36the line-up of the podium. And it was Lewis Hamilton and McLaren who

2:45:36 > 2:45:41did the best job on the day. They got the strategy right. They were

2:45:41 > 2:45:46first in for the final stop and that was absolutely right. And that

2:45:46 > 2:45:53is why he is standing, yet again for the 16th time, on the top step

2:45:53 > 2:45:58of the podium. And look at the joy from the team underneath him.

2:45:58 > 2:46:04Second best on Saturday, top step on Sunday. These celebrations and

2:46:04 > 2:46:09the dampened, Eddie, by the fact Sebastian Vettel has to weed in the

2:46:09 > 2:46:16Championship by 77 points. But that man holding that trophy will not be

2:46:16 > 2:46:21thinking about that. Supreme! I did not think he could achieve this. I

2:46:21 > 2:46:26fancied him for the race because these are perfect conditions. But

2:46:26 > 2:46:32it was crucial to pass Fernando Alonso on the outside of turn two

2:46:32 > 2:46:37and that is why he is on the podium. We talked about where McLaren have

2:46:37 > 2:46:40struggled and the one issue is the strategy calls they have made.

2:46:40 > 2:46:46Today, one pit stop did not do the business but the other did and the

2:46:46 > 2:46:51team were on the money today. Everybody went for the three pit

2:46:51 > 2:46:55stops and it was no big surprise. It was clear cut. If they had got

2:46:55 > 2:47:01it wrong in the strategy, there would have been a lot being gassed

2:47:01 > 2:47:05but they did not and they did a brilliant job. -- being asked. And

2:47:05 > 2:47:10after yesterday's debate with McLaren, who knows, maybe the

2:47:10 > 2:47:17motivation came from other people. Well done to Martin. We are not

2:47:17 > 2:47:21embarrassed, we are delighted for your! And particularly for Lewis.

2:47:21 > 2:47:26We talked about the importance of the pit stops but also because of

2:47:26 > 2:47:31his aggressive driving, that helped him. What a fantastic race, three

2:47:31 > 2:47:35teams, three drivers battling it out and the pit stops had to be

2:47:35 > 2:47:44right and at the right time and consistent. And the drivers have to

2:47:44 > 2:47:50get straight on it. Lewis does a fantastic race. How nervous we do?

2:47:50 > 2:47:56We said the crucial phase would be eight or nine laps from the end

2:47:56 > 2:48:03when those new tyres went on, were you nervous? All the way through I

2:48:03 > 2:48:13was nervous! I think Vitaly Petrov was already going green on the

2:48:13 > 2:48:15

2:48:15 > 2:48:19Prime S Bleu. -- on the Primes. So that inspired us. Lewis got

2:48:19 > 2:48:29straight on to the Prime and as soon as he got greens we knew he

2:48:29 > 2:48:30

2:48:30 > 2:48:36had the race won. I think he did a fantastic job. I thought the

2:48:36 > 2:48:41telling factor of the race was Lewis and his outrageously brave

2:48:41 > 2:48:47move on Alonso on turn 3. That was spectacular and perhaps the reason

2:48:47 > 2:48:52he won the race. If you have a great champion Mike Lewis, when

2:48:52 > 2:48:58these drivers get a sniff of a win, you get something extraordinary --

2:48:58 > 2:49:06like the Felipe Massa -- like Lewis. It is what you expect and it was an

2:49:06 > 2:49:10extraordinary race. You noticed something bright red, Lewis knows

2:49:10 > 2:49:17what it is like to have Ferrari behind him! Fernando was pushing

2:49:17 > 2:49:21like crazy as well, wasn't he? was a great race and we were happy

2:49:22 > 2:49:27for Martin because I saw a lot of pressure not typical from England,

2:49:27 > 2:49:32I would say. Very typical from Italy, so I am very happy for you!

2:49:32 > 2:49:37You know what it is like to be under pressure! I thought it was a

2:49:37 > 2:49:43great race. We would like to posture -- to push as much as we

2:49:43 > 2:49:48can but we struggled with the tyres with these temperatures. Lewis did

2:49:48 > 2:49:52a fantastic race. Fernando was close but if we see this kind of

2:49:52 > 2:49:55performance, we can have a difficult -- a different second

2:49:55 > 2:50:02half of the season to challenge Red Bull who are still leading and

2:50:02 > 2:50:09still very strong. So now it is my go! Do you take it in turns now?

2:50:09 > 2:50:14have that arrangement these days, I might go back on it next week!

2:50:14 > 2:50:18were very concerned and we were, we know how the Ferrari is susceptible

2:50:18 > 2:50:26to the tyre temperatures and now going into some very warm tracks,

2:50:26 > 2:50:32if you looked really strong. think race by race... If you

2:50:32 > 2:50:37remember last year, in Germany we were strong and in Hungary we will

2:50:37 > 2:50:41one-second away from the Red Bull pace. The only signal that his

2:50:41 > 2:50:46great is that in certain conditions, the car has improved, but let's

2:50:46 > 2:50:51wait and see. Thank you both, and they are clearly getting on well at

2:50:51 > 2:50:55the moment so perhaps working together is the only way to beat

2:50:55 > 2:51:01Red Bull at the moment. We will wait for the rest of the season.

2:51:01 > 2:51:07But today it was Lewis Hamilton's Chase for the flag that was a

2:51:07 > 2:51:12success. Much to deal -- much to the delight of the British fans who

2:51:12 > 2:51:19saw Lewis Hamilton win the race. Congratulations, it your second win

2:51:19 > 2:51:27the season and I think it meant more than your first. Everyone is

2:51:27 > 2:51:32special but the emotion and the energy that the team put into the

2:51:32 > 2:51:39car and the effort, and when we do not see results like this, it

2:51:39 > 2:51:45builds up so when you finally do hit the sweet spot and get it, it

2:51:45 > 2:51:50is just better. I could not feel any better. We did not expect to

2:51:50 > 2:51:58come here this weekend and be so fast. We were hindered in the last

2:51:58 > 2:52:05race a bit but the guys did a fantastic job, pushing very hard.

2:52:05 > 2:52:11And the engine was great. I just feel great. One of the best races I

2:52:11 > 2:52:16think I have ever done. Fernando, the top three finishers you were

2:52:16 > 2:52:21all finishing hard, maybe too hard in your case because she ran out of

2:52:21 > 2:52:29fuel at the end, did that compromise your fight with Lewis? -

2:52:29 > 2:52:36- you ran out. Mack not really, -- not really. We were not too quick,

2:52:36 > 2:52:44so we just controlled the car and secured second place. For us, it

2:52:44 > 2:52:49was a fantastic race, a fantastic Sunday again. We were 4th yesterday.

2:52:49 > 2:52:59The car today showed a great pace so we can keep the pace of the

2:52:59 > 2:53:00

2:53:00 > 2:53:04leaders. It was great to have second place after winning in

2:53:04 > 2:53:09Silverstone and second place in Valencia. A good moment of the

2:53:09 > 2:53:12Championship for us and we have another opportunity next week.

2:53:12 > 2:53:18describe your emotions after another pole position that sadly

2:53:18 > 2:53:22for you you could not convert into a win. We were not quick enough to

2:53:22 > 2:53:28days. I was happy with how I drove, these guys just had that extra

2:53:28 > 2:53:34margin that they needed, especially at the back part. A little bit more

2:53:34 > 2:53:39range and that made us a bit exposed on strategy. We know what

2:53:39 > 2:53:44we have to improve on and I could not have got much more than what we

2:53:44 > 2:53:50have today. Disappointed not to win, of course, but all three of us had

2:53:50 > 2:53:57his move day. A good fight round the stops, so mixed emotions.

2:53:57 > 2:54:02Another good result. You need to perform at a high level, but we

2:54:02 > 2:54:08will keep learning and the progress has been decent, but we need to

2:54:08 > 2:54:13improve. So serious disappointment for Mark

2:54:13 > 2:54:18Webber. He could do the business on Saturday but seemingly not on

2:54:18 > 2:54:22Sunday for the 5th consecutive race, he does not turn pole position into

2:54:22 > 2:54:26we win. And it is the first time for Sebastian Vettel he has not

2:54:26 > 2:54:34been on the podium this season. And Michael Schumacher, another

2:54:34 > 2:54:44adventurous and exciting race for him today. All the rest are right

2:54:44 > 2:54:44

2:54:44 > 2:54:52at the back very early on. Heikki Kovalainen finishes at the front of

2:54:52 > 2:54:58the new teams in 16th place. And for the new boys, Daniel Ricciardo

2:54:58 > 2:55:03in his first race and Karun Chandhok in his second. And a

2:55:03 > 2:55:07dramatic disappearance off the track for Nick Heidfeld, who

2:55:07 > 2:55:16finishes at the back. Some Sebastian Vettel still leads the

2:55:16 > 2:55:26Championship with more than three race wins. 28.S for a win, remember.

2:55:26 > 2:55:34-- 28 points for a win, remember. And Vitaly Petrov is impressing for

2:55:34 > 2:55:39Renault at the moment. We have just walked through a rather over-

2:55:39 > 2:55:41excited McLaren garage, they are gathered around the car of Jenson

2:55:42 > 2:55:49Button but they were not commiserating, at they were

2:55:49 > 2:55:56drinking champagne next to his car! It is only a week now until we are

2:55:56 > 2:56:02in Hungary for the next race, but we can talk to David. Lewis said,

2:56:02 > 2:56:07one of my best ever wins, how would you write that? Unquestionably. And

2:56:07 > 2:56:11as Eddie mentioned, that pass around the outside in turn two,

2:56:11 > 2:56:17Fernando Alonso who would not give him any space was caught napping.

2:56:17 > 2:56:21That was the key element in winning this Grand Prix. It was great to

2:56:21 > 2:56:26watch the first three in the race and you could not call it for a lot

2:56:26 > 2:56:32of the race. -- we just had a remarkably strong grace and for the

2:56:32 > 2:56:36first time, Sebastian was not there. These guys, wheel-to-wheel, I

2:56:36 > 2:56:42enjoyed that it is so fast but yet they can look after other car and

2:56:42 > 2:56:47bring it home. The reliability is phenomenal with Formula One what is

2:56:47 > 2:56:52going on, and that is down to the engineers and the teams. I am going

2:56:52 > 2:56:58home and cheap -- at home a vote for joy it because this was a great

2:56:58 > 2:57:04race. -- I am going home are overjoyed. There were a lot of

2:57:04 > 2:57:12uncharacteristic errors for Sebastian Vettel. This is on turn

2:57:12 > 2:57:1910. He gets beyond the white line on to the artificial grass and the

2:57:19 > 2:57:25water goes up and water and tyres do not mix and it was inevitable

2:57:25 > 2:57:30you would get a spin. And this is the last sector, he locks up the

2:57:30 > 2:57:36front and got too close to Felipe Massa and lost the downforce and

2:57:36 > 2:57:42have to go down the escape route. You would not take that risk in

2:57:42 > 2:57:46Monaco because there is. I would like your opinion on this, David. I

2:57:46 > 2:57:51thought he drove badly today and do you think it is because he has such

2:57:51 > 2:57:56a lead in the Championship or, at which is my fault, that he is just

2:57:56 > 2:58:04ridiculously quick but not very good in traffic? -- which is my

2:58:04 > 2:58:12fault. I hoped he would put that opinion to rest but he had to rely

2:58:12 > 2:58:19on the pit crew at the last stop. And remarkably. He almost relied on

2:58:19 > 2:58:22ignoring the pit crew! Is that a fair assessment of Sebastien that

2:58:22 > 2:58:27when he is at the front he is brilliant and does not make

2:58:27 > 2:58:33mistakes, when he is in traffic he does not look like the same driver?

2:58:33 > 2:58:37The jury is still out. When he has been up close and personal with

2:58:37 > 2:58:42other drivers, he has had incidents but has been Supreme out front.

2:58:42 > 2:58:47Would you take away that pace to make him a better race a? Probably

2:58:47 > 2:58:51not, you want him to run at the front. This will be slightly

2:58:51 > 2:58:54disappointing for Red Bull. They know you cannot win them all up but

2:58:54 > 2:59:00in these cold conditions, it looks like the Ferrari and McLaren on

2:59:00 > 2:59:05making better use of the tyres. is certainly a better driver and

2:59:05 > 2:59:09two out of the three of us! We can hear from Sebastian Vettel.

2:59:09 > 2:59:15And exciting end to your race, what does it feel like getting pass that

2:59:15 > 2:59:22Ferrari in the pit lane? It felt good. I entered my pit box first

2:59:22 > 2:59:27and when I got out, you'd obviously cannot wait to leave the box -- you

2:59:27 > 2:59:33obviously. It was not nice to see the face -- to see the Ferrari was

2:59:33 > 2:59:37still stationery. They did a very good job and we were pushing very

2:59:37 > 2:59:43hard all the race, trying to push Felipe Massa into a mistake. We

2:59:43 > 2:59:49were both at a limit, the cars were nervous and generally I think 4th

2:59:49 > 2:59:53was probably our maximum today, which is not satisfying. But we

2:59:53 > 2:59:58have to accept it. Next week is the next race and it looks as though

2:59:58 > 3:00:03McLaren and Ferrari are getting quicker and quicker. So we need to

3:00:03 > 3:00:13work harder on our car are trying to improve it in order to be back

3:00:13 > 3:00:17

3:00:17 > 3:00:22on the podium and maybe soon on the using every mm of the track, how

3:00:22 > 3:00:27difficult work conditions out that at the start? It actually was not

3:00:27 > 3:00:34so bad and I felt more comfortable than the cars around may at that

3:00:34 > 3:00:37stage. Unfortunately, I had a good start but I was right in the sand

3:00:37 > 3:00:45wedge of the Ferraris. I could not attack on the braking because I had

3:00:45 > 3:00:49fully paid on my outside and Fernando on the insight -- Fernando

3:00:49 > 3:00:55on the inside. There was not much space. It was quite tricky and I

3:00:55 > 3:01:00had to accept that I lost the position. From there, I came back.

3:01:00 > 3:01:06Fernando obviously had a mistake. I got past but I did not have the

3:01:06 > 3:01:12pace. As easy as that. Obviously, the mistake I did then and I lost

3:01:12 > 3:01:18the rear into turn ten did not help and it put me behind filly pay and

3:01:18 > 3:01:23I struggled to get past. -- Felipe Massa. Not the result he wanted in

3:01:23 > 3:01:27front of your home crowd but do you leave here disappointed? It is not

3:01:27 > 3:01:33satisfying but we have to accept that other people were quicker than

3:01:33 > 3:01:39us. As I said, I am not happy, not satisfied so I want to come back

3:01:39 > 3:01:44next time, but for now, I think, they have been working Reinhard,

3:01:44 > 3:01:50improved their car, we need to make sure that we come back and I did

3:01:50 > 3:02:00not feel very good will weekend. I never got to the pace that Mark had

3:02:00 > 3:02:03in the car. Are struggled to keep up with the top two or three cars.

3:02:03 > 3:02:09The those are the thoughts of the world champion, let's get the

3:02:10 > 3:02:14thoughts of his team principal. If you thought that building a car

3:02:15 > 3:02:18which was leading the others over 77 points is enough, it obviously

3:02:18 > 3:02:23isn't. Sebastian said he was not happy all weekend, what is the

3:02:23 > 3:02:29problem? He has not found a balance with the car he is happy with. It

3:02:29 > 3:02:35is similar to 2009. He had the spin and flat spotted the tyres. His

3:02:35 > 3:02:39pace picked up dramatically in the second half. Ultimately, his race

3:02:39 > 3:02:46came down to a pit stop against Massa at the end. As always, there

3:02:46 > 3:02:53is work to do it. Christian, we heard Sebastian's engineer saying

3:02:53 > 3:02:57there were good points to pick up, just be cautious, is that your plan

3:02:58 > 3:03:02for the rest of the season? We have to attack every weekend and

3:03:02 > 3:03:06Sebastian's mentality is he has not looking at the leaderboard. He is

3:03:06 > 3:03:10conscious of it. In a weekend where he has not been the stand at

3:03:10 > 3:03:16quickest driver, obviously, pick up fourth place on a bad day is not

3:03:16 > 3:03:21too bad. Something David noticed was Mark's start in particular. We

3:03:21 > 3:03:29can ride with him at the start. We missed the beginning of the start.

3:03:29 > 3:03:34It sounded that a car dropped down. You can see he did not get off the

3:03:34 > 3:03:38line particularly cleanly and Lewis had a great start. We need to speak

3:03:38 > 3:03:43to him and understand. Obviously, getting the revs and the clutch

3:03:43 > 3:03:47engagement right is a tricky procedure. Every run that from the

3:03:47 > 3:03:51top, we can listen to the car and perhaps you can explain how it does

3:03:51 > 3:03:56sound and how it should sound because you picked upon this.

3:03:56 > 3:04:02starting procedure for the drivers is you will have two clutch paddles.

3:04:02 > 3:04:06Just before he releases the clutch, it sounded like the engine rpm was

3:04:07 > 3:04:11tailing off slightly so I wondered if it was starting to drag the

3:04:11 > 3:04:17clutch. It definitely bogged down a lot and then there was a juddering

3:04:17 > 3:04:23noise. That was enough to lose momentum. I think all the starts

3:04:23 > 3:04:28around him look better. They all looked stronger. It is a fine line

3:04:28 > 3:04:32finding the engagement on the clutch, not getting real --

3:04:32 > 3:04:36wheelspin. It is not an easy thing to do it. Let's get ourselves into

3:04:36 > 3:04:45the race and have a look at a couple of the pit stops which were

3:04:45 > 3:04:51all important today. Getting your strategy right today was absolutely

3:04:51 > 3:04:56essential, wasn't it? Absolutely. What was fascinating was at the

3:04:57 > 3:05:02first stop we managed to leap mark into the lead by taking the and the

3:05:02 > 3:05:07cut but in the second one it did not work. I don't think we could

3:05:07 > 3:05:14generate a tyre temperature that McLaren did. It was very tight and

3:05:14 > 3:05:19obviously, they got pretty close on the kerb there. We are on board

3:05:19 > 3:05:27here with Mark. I expect we will see Lewis coming out of the pit

3:05:27 > 3:05:31lane here. This is our worst nightmare for the driver. He gets a

3:05:31 > 3:05:37great run of turn one, goes to the outside but that was always going

3:05:37 > 3:05:42to be a big ask, nothing untoward there. Lewis held his line and

3:05:42 > 3:05:49ultimately, Mark had to give up his position. Did it catch you guys by

3:05:49 > 3:05:54surprise by realising what did work did not? It worked at the first

3:05:54 > 3:05:58stop and then we had the same situation here with Alonso. You see

3:05:58 > 3:06:03Lewis gets that drive, goes to the outside and manages to have enough

3:06:03 > 3:06:07space to work and get round there. It was almost a reverse effect

3:06:07 > 3:06:11which happened at the first stop which got Mark into the lead.

3:06:11 > 3:06:17Christian, I'm fascinated by not this particular piece, but as we

3:06:17 > 3:06:22come later on when we see your car coming in, your engineer clearly

3:06:22 > 3:06:27telling Sebastian to come in and he did not, what happened there?

3:06:27 > 3:06:32of gamesmanship with Ferrari. but he did not honour the court he

3:06:32 > 3:06:36was given. For everybody is watching each other and we threw a

3:06:36 > 3:06:41dummy, they did not go for it, they threw us a dummy and we did not go

3:06:41 > 3:06:46for it and then they both had to stop and it was a straight fight.

3:06:46 > 3:06:50You see our guys did a phenomenal job. They turned the cars around so

3:06:50 > 3:06:55quickly. It was the best start of the day under huge pressure which

3:06:55 > 3:06:59Ferrari have been looking to put us under. I was watching from the

3:06:59 > 3:07:04commentary box. Ferrari were out in the pit lane 30 seconds before the

3:07:04 > 3:07:10car came in for so you went for a different seige are with your

3:07:10 > 3:07:15drivers coming out and they were staying with the same drill.

3:07:15 > 3:07:19they practise this day in, day out, every day of the week. They have

3:07:19 > 3:07:24done a phenomenal job under huge pressure. One lap to go. They see

3:07:24 > 3:07:27the Ferrari coming in and Sebastian is coming and. That is the kind of

3:07:27 > 3:07:33performance that helps when you race, helps when you're

3:07:33 > 3:07:37championships and they have done a great job for both drivers today.

3:07:37 > 3:07:40Two what could be very valuable points for Sebastian Vettel in the

3:07:41 > 3:07:46back. Thank you for joining us. It was not a win but you cannot have

3:07:46 > 3:07:50them all the time. Absolutely and on a miserable day in Germany third

3:07:50 > 3:07:54and fourth is not too bad. We are looking forward to going somewhere

3:07:54 > 3:07:58hotter next weekend. Maybe we should go back to the start of the

3:07:58 > 3:08:02race and have a look from a perspective of a number of drivers.

3:08:02 > 3:08:08Lewis Hamilton was looking to be aggressive from the start. Michael

3:08:08 > 3:08:11Schumacher had a great start but big disappointment for Mark Webber.

3:08:11 > 3:08:16This, pole position, fantastic job on Saturday but he is not able to

3:08:16 > 3:08:23get a clean run off the line. All the drivers doing a fantastic job

3:08:23 > 3:08:28to keep out of each other's, you know, rubbing body weight. Knowing

3:08:28 > 3:08:33what these cars are like with fuel on board, cold tyres, cold track

3:08:33 > 3:08:38temperatures and we saw in the background, the spin with Nick

3:08:38 > 3:08:43Heidfeld and Paul di Resta. Fernando Alonso are really fighting.

3:08:43 > 3:08:48It was great to see you. It was great to see. Fernando has come of

3:08:48 > 3:08:54age. The updates they have brought to fills -- Silverstone are

3:08:54 > 3:08:59beginning to work. We all feel for Ferrari. They do not like these

3:08:59 > 3:09:02conditions, they do not like it so cold. They will be going home

3:09:02 > 3:09:09extremely happy because they have probably got their two worst races

3:09:09 > 3:09:14out of the way. On the flipside, just after the moment we saw there,

3:09:14 > 3:09:20Paul di Resta ended up in the gravel. He ended up last. He could

3:09:20 > 3:09:24not pick up points. Let's hear from him. After a pretty disappointing

3:09:24 > 3:09:30start, you did your best to work back, tell us about the incident

3:09:30 > 3:09:36with Heidfeld. I am not really too short. I got a reasonable start. I

3:09:36 > 3:09:41was next to Michael, racing him and I got a hit from the back. It was

3:09:41 > 3:09:45Heidfeld because he was the one who stopped when I spun round. I think

3:09:45 > 3:09:50he got a drive through a later in the race. It was out of my control,

3:09:50 > 3:09:54he hit me from behind and spun. just explain how you are feeling

3:09:54 > 3:10:00because I know you were really keen to get some good points here, it

3:10:00 > 3:10:05has been another testing weekend for year? It has. Our pace has been

3:10:05 > 3:10:09really good. Adrian, luckily won a lot of points for the team

3:10:09 > 3:10:19finishing sixth. I think our strategy was quite good. We managed

3:10:19 > 3:10:23to go till six laps until the end before changing for the Prime.

3:10:23 > 3:10:27Paul di Resta heads to hungry desperately hoping he can pick up

3:10:27 > 3:10:36points again. The German Grand Prix can be re-lived if you like on BBC

3:10:36 > 3:10:41Three at 7 o'clock. On BBC Two right now it is the Challenge Cup

3:10:41 > 3:10:47quarter-final. And the MotoGP Boys, Casey Stoner against Lorenzo. You

3:10:47 > 3:10:51can see the action tonight. We offer in just seven days' time to
