:01:10. > :01:14.Welcome to India, one of the few places where Formula One has never

:01:14. > :01:20.been before. They've got their Bollywood heroes, they treat their

:01:20. > :01:30.cricketers like gods and as of this weekend, they have got 24 new stars

:01:30. > :01:30.

:01:30. > :02:19.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 48 seconds

:02:19. > :02:23.I think he rather enjoyed his souvenir. Good afternoon and

:02:23. > :02:27.welcome to another chance to see a slice of history, the first-ever

:02:27. > :02:31.Formula One qualifying session in India. In all the years you owned a

:02:31. > :02:35.Formula One team, you saw many new circuits, give us your first

:02:35. > :02:39.impressions of this place. Huge surprise, I am absolutely delighted

:02:39. > :02:43.for them. This has been a risk financially and otherwise. I think

:02:43. > :02:48.they've got it right. Still some things to do, but they are doing

:02:48. > :02:52.well. The only disappointment is that there is no longer a chance to

:02:52. > :02:56.fight for a title. Wouldn't the Indian fans have loved to turn up

:02:56. > :03:06.to see the driver's fight for the championship, but that is not the

:03:06. > :03:12.

:03:12. > :03:15.case as Sebastian Vettel has It is incredible to stand him now

:03:15. > :03:19.on solid Tarmac, huge buildings behind us, and one of the longest

:03:19. > :03:29.and most impressive pit lanes and paddocks in Formula One. When we

:03:29. > :03:35.

:03:35. > :03:41.came here a year ago, it was rather What a difference a year makes.

:03:41. > :03:45.know. September last year we came here. We were this much in March

:03:45. > :03:52.walking around. Everywhere was marred. What is your stand out

:03:52. > :04:02.memory? Your face as I was powers loading -- power sliding through

:04:02. > :04:08.

:04:09. > :04:13.I can't believe I'm here, it feels like a different place. Some very

:04:13. > :04:19.excited marshals. How big is this for India? Huge. Standing on the

:04:19. > :04:26.track, we are getting goose bumps. Really? Yes. We are a bigger fan of

:04:26. > :04:31.this man. Of course you are. Let me take a photo. When we were here

:04:31. > :04:35.last time, it was the same, people excited to see you, people proud of

:04:35. > :04:41.the fact that this is India's Grand Prix circuit, but a year ago they

:04:41. > :04:47.were standing up to their knees in mud. Now they are working. You were

:04:47. > :04:53.in one of these garages trying to saw a piece of wood. Trying!

:04:53. > :04:58.Hindering the process rather than helping them. There you go. Thank

:04:58. > :05:07.you very much. Ah you're looking forward to seeing him driving

:05:07. > :05:13.around on Friday? -- are you all? Yes! Good. This is how the English

:05:14. > :05:20.cricket team should play. We are not talking about cricket! What was

:05:20. > :05:25.the cricket score this series? Just checking. You can tell by the

:05:25. > :05:30.cheers they were excited to see you. India is a cricket country, India

:05:30. > :05:35.will always be a cricket country. People questioned whether they

:05:35. > :05:40.could also love Formula One. There is passion. These are just the guys

:05:40. > :05:45.working here, not even the fans. It is amazing. It is so nice for me to

:05:45. > :05:55.see. Despite media in the Friday session, people I excited to see me

:05:55. > :05:58.

:05:59. > :06:03.drive on a Friday morning. -- This is now totally new to me. We

:06:03. > :06:11.stood there and turn one went into a lake and I said take a right into

:06:11. > :06:16.the lagoon. Is that not going straight into a massive puddle? The

:06:16. > :06:20.drivers' start with a hard right into the lagoon! When we go to new

:06:20. > :06:24.circuits, they fly in the marshals from Europe or somewhere. Here they

:06:24. > :06:29.have trained up fanatics to be there marshals. Let's check how

:06:29. > :06:32.ready you are. A car crashes here and loses its front wing in the

:06:32. > :06:42.middle of the track, I will time you to get into the middle and get

:06:42. > :06:44.

:06:44. > :06:50.back. Pick it up! Look at that. seconds? Nine seconds. If the plan

:06:50. > :06:56.comes together, I will be up here clapping and cheering as you race

:06:56. > :07:04.around the Indian circuit. I will way that you. It will be lovely.

:07:04. > :07:08.Don't fall in the drain. There's no point pretending otherwise, it is a

:07:08. > :07:13.little rough around the edges, but to have it in a state of readiness

:07:13. > :07:18.is incredible. A It is incredible. It is also remarkable in that short

:07:18. > :07:24.space of time. In between that time they had the Commonwealth Games and

:07:24. > :07:29.that was funded by the government. That had a lot of problems. This,

:07:29. > :07:32.privately funded by entrepreneurs, is hugely impressive. This looks

:07:32. > :07:36.like it has been here a considerable amount of time and

:07:36. > :07:40.everybody is overjoyed with how they have got themselves together.

:07:40. > :07:44.It is a big weekend for Delhi. The eyes of the whole world are on

:07:44. > :07:49.India at the moment. The only disappointment is the hazy skies,

:07:49. > :07:59.but how clear would it be for qualifying? Time to find out in the

:07:59. > :07:59.

:07:59. > :08:05.company of Martin Brundle and David is open and qualifying is under way,

:08:05. > :08:11.traditional 20 minutes. The usual suspects should clear this quite

:08:11. > :08:15.comfortably. In Q2, it will be very interesting to see who burns up the

:08:15. > :08:25.soft tyres. Be to is a much bigger gap between the tyres than last

:08:25. > :08:31.week. -- it is. Even some of the front runners, will they risk it?

:08:31. > :08:33.The track is evolving, we have stable temperatures. We could see

:08:33. > :08:38.huge evolution in the race track without taking into account the

:08:38. > :08:43.difference in tyres. We will have the usual guys at the back running

:08:43. > :08:49.the fast tyres. Let's explain what we mean by evolution of the

:08:49. > :08:53.racetrack. As the rubber goes down, every time a car goes through the

:08:53. > :09:00.corner, it leaves a little bit of the tyre behind. That is when you

:09:00. > :09:06.get a black line on the apex. That generates its own grip. The tyre

:09:06. > :09:10.against its own or rubber get more grip. Look at the left side of the

:09:10. > :09:17.track, it is grey. It is the same tarmac, but the cars are not

:09:17. > :09:21.running on that area. The dust is pushed into the gaps in the tarmac.

:09:21. > :09:26.This is the Force India weaving slightly to get heat in the tyres.

:09:26. > :09:32.We are expecting them to have to do at least three laps. More than that

:09:32. > :09:38.and you are carrying too much of a weight penalty. Ted. In the pit

:09:38. > :09:42.lane, a couple of teams that might struggle to get out of this Q1

:09:42. > :09:47.session R Williams and Sauber. Williams are struggling with

:09:47. > :09:52.overall grip. The engineers say the balance isn't too bad but they

:09:52. > :09:58.can't find a grip. They will aim to get their drivers on track last in

:09:58. > :10:02.this session. Traffic might be a problem. Watch out for Sauber, and

:10:02. > :10:10.Renault are doing more setting up. Petrov and Senna were early out,

:10:10. > :10:16.but now everyone is piling out. Most people on the hard tyre.

:10:16. > :10:23.cars of the 24 out on the racetrack. Petrov has embraced the racetrack,

:10:23. > :10:28.he has done a 1:29, not particularly fast. 22 of the 24

:10:28. > :10:38.cars on track. Alonso does a 27.8 and we are beginning to get in the

:10:38. > :10:42.

:10:42. > :10:49.to go well over a second faster with softer tyres. Button is on the

:10:49. > :10:59.hard tyres. Running very wide on the exit of the last turn. It is

:10:59. > :11:00.

:11:00. > :11:04.actually Hamilton. Where will he open? 28.5. A bit of time lost.

:11:04. > :11:09.Picked up a lot of dust on those tyres. Normally you can clean the

:11:09. > :11:18.tyres on a couple of corners, but with a track as dusty as this, you

:11:18. > :11:23.can't afford to weave up too much. The next lap will be lost. This

:11:23. > :11:27.track was finished literally just in time so there's a lot of

:11:27. > :11:31.construction dust and rubbish around the place. It is the same

:11:31. > :11:37.for everybody, they have the same opportunity. I don't think we can

:11:37. > :11:40.criticise the track for that. It reminds me a bit of the early days

:11:40. > :11:48.when we went to the Hungarian Grand Prix way you kicked up a lot of

:11:48. > :11:54.dust. Mark Webber crosses the line. This morning, we were down in the

:11:54. > :11:59.low 1:25s on the soft tyres. The track has got a little bit dusty.

:11:59. > :12:09.We had a support race, which tends to change the dynamics of the race

:12:09. > :12:10.

:12:10. > :12:14.a little bit. Vettel into the 26s finally to go fastest. Rosberg up

:12:14. > :12:22.into fifth place for Mercedes-Benz. The usual suspects at the front.

:12:22. > :12:28.Who is at the back? We are looking at Christian Horner. Down in the

:12:28. > :12:33.drop zone, Kovalainen, Karthikeyan, Trulli, Timo Glock, d'Ambrosio,

:12:33. > :12:39.Kobayashi and Perez. The last two still running, is that supreme

:12:40. > :12:44.confidence? They will get a clear track. They will decide whether

:12:44. > :12:50.they will do another run. It could get them the benefit of a clear

:12:50. > :12:54.track. Ted is at Sauber. Just looking into their garage. No

:12:54. > :13:00.problems for the car. They know they might struggle to get out of

:13:00. > :13:05.the session cleanly. They are not going to do race set-up, which is

:13:05. > :13:07.what everybody else is doing, with high lap times, they are going to

:13:07. > :13:15.concentrate on letting them clean up the track and then try to secure

:13:15. > :13:20.their way out of this session. Tactics rather than confident.

:13:20. > :13:27.confidence. They have enough tyres. Michael Schumacher fails to take

:13:27. > :13:32.the final corner. I thought Michael looked immense on Friday morning.

:13:32. > :13:39.He then said he had been struggling on this racetrack. Underbraking for

:13:39. > :13:44.the final corner. He locked the front left. On to the dirty part of

:13:44. > :13:53.the track. The run-off areas are super dirty. We have seen drivers

:13:53. > :13:58.run off the road and then go and have an accident. Timo Glock not in

:13:58. > :14:05.the car at all. He has done three laps. Presumably he has a problem

:14:05. > :14:09.and that means he has no chance at the moment. He looks like he could

:14:09. > :14:14.qualify in 24th place for top three drivers will get penalties at the

:14:14. > :14:21.end of this qualifying, guaranteed. One is Petrov for running into

:14:21. > :14:27.Schumacher in South Korea two weeks ago. The next one up his Perez for

:14:27. > :14:32.speeding under the yellows yesterday. Two minutes after that,

:14:32. > :14:39.Lewis Hamilton did the same and he also has a penalty. Five place drop

:14:40. > :14:43.for Petrov and then three places for Perez and Hamilton. That gets

:14:43. > :14:53.applied after the session finishes. This is Lewis Hamilton at the

:14:53. > :15:04.

:15:04. > :15:09.moment, running third. Personal The track is evolving very quickly.

:15:09. > :15:16.From the practice sessions, it was taking them a few laps to get the

:15:17. > :15:22.tyres to perform. There is an element of track evolution, but the

:15:22. > :15:31.tyres, there is no graining, so it is taking them a few laps to

:15:31. > :15:37.penetrate, to get enough heat into the surface. Sebastian battle does

:15:37. > :15:44.fastest. Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez have gone out onto the track.

:15:44. > :15:54.Jenson Button runs why it, which compromises his speed. -- Jenson

:15:54. > :16:08.

:16:08. > :16:12.Button runs wide. A Ferrari engine being held up by Michael Schumacher.

:16:12. > :16:21.Michael Schumacher has gone into the pits, so he is not behind him

:16:21. > :16:28.now. This is Jerome d'Ambrosio, not far ahead of him. You can see the

:16:28. > :16:36.yellow markings on the tyres, it is the soft compound. He rarely have

:16:36. > :16:45.said, we came here with a conservative strategy. There was no

:16:45. > :16:52.real knowledge of the track. But lots of simulation. They took a

:16:52. > :17:02.conservative approach on one set of the tyres. The soft tyres of 1.5

:17:02. > :17:04.

:17:04. > :17:11.seconds faster. Ted Kravitz? It is a gearbox failure for Timo Glock.

:17:11. > :17:19.He is getting changed, that is the end of recession. Bruno Senna is

:17:19. > :17:24.under pressure. Pastor Maldonado put the quicker tyres on, he is

:17:24. > :17:34.ahead of Jenson Button. There will be a few nervous front runners.

:17:34. > :17:42.Jenson Button, down to 11th. What is Bruno Senna up to? Look how wide

:17:42. > :17:48.it is into the final corner. My fear is, the track will be so dirty

:17:48. > :17:57.off-line, it will not be worth overtaking. We have seen quite a

:17:57. > :18:07.bit of that in free practice. Paul di Resta, 10th. Michael Schumacher

:18:07. > :18:27.

:18:27. > :18:37.better lap. He just sneaks in for now. All of a sudden, Jenson Button

:18:37. > :18:45.is looking under pressure. Will he have to run again? He has got to.

:18:45. > :18:50.He should be able to get through on Bahadur tyre. He is on the soft!

:18:50. > :18:57.has had to get out of the way of three cars. It has all gone wrong.

:18:57. > :19:07.He has got loads of traffic. He will get another flying black after

:19:07. > :19:20.

:19:20. > :19:25.this. He may have to jockey for him. He cannot back up to much.

:19:25. > :19:35.is being towed by the Virgin. He is running behind Jarno Trulli in the

:19:35. > :19:36.

:19:36. > :19:46.Lotus. His first sector, 42.7. He will have to position himself for a

:19:46. > :19:46.

:19:46. > :19:50.single flight lap, to not be the first big scalp. He is now 16th.

:19:51. > :19:56.Michael Schumacher is about to start. As long as they get over the

:19:56. > :20:03.line before the clock goes to zero. Michael Schumacher finding himself

:20:03. > :20:13.some space, ahead of Heikki Kovalainen. Jenson Button trying to

:20:13. > :20:22.find the space. He will be OK if he gets over the finish line. He has

:20:22. > :20:31.backed off from Jarno Trulli. He has got to go for it. He is still

:20:31. > :20:41.16th. Other cars cannot come down very quickly. -- can knock him down

:20:41. > :20:49.

:20:49. > :20:57.moment. He has got to deliver it now. Personal best, first sector.

:20:57. > :21:05.It has had to sacrifice a set of the faster tyres. Will he get some

:21:05. > :21:12.traffic? He is right in the middle of 10 and 11. He gets compromised

:21:12. > :21:19.massively through their apex. I think that HRT driver might find

:21:19. > :21:28.himself in front of the stewards. Can he make up the time? Jenson

:21:28. > :21:34.Button, personal best, first sector. Kamui Kobayashi is in the pits. Did

:21:34. > :21:43.that traffic cost Michael Schumacher? It made the difference,

:21:43. > :21:51.but he has used a set of the tyres. Jenson Button, two personal bests.

:21:51. > :22:01.He will hate to use those tyres to get the job done. Kamui Kobayashi,

:22:01. > :22:08.the first big scalp. We say goodbye to Kamui Kobayashi, Heikki

:22:08. > :22:15.Kovalainen, Jarno Trulli, Daniel Ricciardo, Narain Karthikeyan. 23rd

:22:15. > :22:19.will be Jerome d'Ambrosio. Timo Glock, sadly, will start at the

:22:19. > :22:27.back. Tough for Timo Glock, but what was

:22:27. > :22:31.it like for you? It has been a while. It is very emotional,

:22:31. > :22:40.driving in my country. I did not think I would get a chance, but it

:22:40. > :22:50.has happened, and I am very happy. Everybody is so happy. I think we

:22:50. > :23:02.

:23:02. > :23:09.track, the Lotus Renault cars and a Toro Rosso. Interesting facts from

:23:09. > :23:14.Q1, 14 times that Heikki Kovalainen has beaten his team mate in 16

:23:14. > :23:19.races, and Kamui Kobayashi, every time he has been eliminated in Q1,

:23:19. > :23:27.he has gone on to score points. Maybe he will not be that

:23:27. > :23:36.disappointed after all. This it is about Asher for lend another seven

:23:36. > :23:46.drivers out of it. -- shuffle and another seven drivers. You can see

:23:46. > :23:55.

:23:55. > :23:59.the yellow markings there. That leave the pit lane and, if you are

:23:59. > :24:07.a primary garage, you will have cars coming out in front of you, so

:24:07. > :24:13.your preparation for your fastest lap, it will have an effect,

:24:13. > :24:18.getting temperatures into the brakes and tyres, the feelings. It

:24:18. > :24:27.is a matter of timing, it is like watching a triple jumper or Jonny

:24:27. > :24:34.Wilkinson getting ready. Vitaly Petrov going very wide.

:24:34. > :24:41.Kravitz? It is a brand new set of soft tyres for Jenson Button, and

:24:41. > :24:50.for all of the top runners. The plan for McLaren, they will try to

:24:50. > :25:00.just do the one run in Q2. Then, Jenson Button will use to one's

:25:00. > :25:01.

:25:01. > :25:09.tyres for the first bank collapsed in Q3. -- Q1's tyres. In Q1, Felipe

:25:09. > :25:14.Massa went out on the soft tyre. Ferrari either wanted to put up a

:25:14. > :25:24.bit of wear through the tyres or wanted to do some learning.

:25:24. > :25:27.

:25:27. > :25:34.bizarre. I am surprised, why would McLaren save the used said? -- use

:25:34. > :25:43.set of tyres? The temperatures would have dropped down. You do not

:25:43. > :25:51.want to add a lot more pressure artificially. Otherwise, I am

:25:51. > :25:56.surprised. Sebastian Vettel out for the first time on these tyres. I

:25:56. > :26:04.love to see a Formula One car like that, brilliant direction changed.

:26:04. > :26:13.You should sit inside and Philip, it is sheer brilliance -- feel it.

:26:13. > :26:21.The car obeys your every command. Nobody listens to our command in

:26:21. > :26:31.any other sphere of life! So often, it ignores year, and it goes into

:26:31. > :26:32.

:26:32. > :26:42.the barriers. Well Sebastian Vettel think that is good enough? -- will

:26:42. > :26:53.

:26:53. > :26:59.end, taken wide. The Indian dust going into the tyres. It is molten

:26:59. > :27:06.rubber on the surface, and it soaks up the dust. He gets out of the way

:27:06. > :27:13.of his team-mate. That is not ideal. That his team management, why have

:27:13. > :27:18.your drivers fighting over the same piece of racetrack? A bit of

:27:18. > :27:28.information, he could have lifted. Sebastian Vettel has given up on

:27:28. > :27:34.the second lap. Nico Rosberg is the fastest man in the first sector.

:27:34. > :27:44.Jenson Button looking for a slipstream. This is Nico Rosberg,

:27:44. > :28:08.

:28:08. > :28:14.about to deliver his best lap of throttle. Down its two shifts, then

:28:14. > :28:23.it is slow through the exit. This looks like a tremendous section. It

:28:23. > :28:33.is a chicane, effectively. The back end of the car will step out and

:28:33. > :28:36.

:28:36. > :28:42.that situation. -- in that situation. That was fantastic.

:28:42. > :28:48.slower than Sebastian Vettel. middle sector was not very strong.

:28:48. > :28:56.He was quickest of all on the first sector, but then it looked like he

:28:56. > :29:02.was preserving the tyres. It looked like a race lap, rather than a

:29:02. > :29:12.qualifying lap. Felipe Massa or putting the Ferrari up into fourth

:29:12. > :29:19.

:29:19. > :29:24.place. Paul di Resta is yet to run the Ferrari flapping around. They

:29:24. > :29:32.have been trying an experimental front window. I heard some

:29:32. > :29:41.fascinating gossip, when Mark Webber crashed in Italy, he went

:29:41. > :29:47.off,... Felipe Massa get it wrong. The Red Bull goes off, the front

:29:47. > :29:54.wing never made it back to the pits, it disappeared. A good bit of

:29:54. > :30:04.gossip,... Somewhere at large, maybe somewhere in Milan, there is

:30:04. > :30:12.

:30:12. > :30:22.sixth place. Make that second place as he crosses the line to complete

:30:22. > :30:32.

:30:32. > :30:39.the dirt and that is why they paid him back with no grip whatsoever

:30:39. > :30:49.when he next called on them. apex of that turn, he clipped the

:31:52. > :31:57.only three-tenths a way. We could see the Mercedes popping in as well.

:31:57. > :32:03.Sebastian Vettel, four-tenths quicker than everybody else. A

:32:03. > :32:07.shaky hand! That is the air blower which is calling him. He has got a

:32:07. > :32:17.steady hand. -- Carillion him. Vettel still wanting to look at

:32:17. > :32:21.data. I am told that with the sound analysis, even on a just finished

:32:21. > :32:29.lap, they can look at the data of other drivers. Incredible

:32:29. > :32:33.technology and information that they have. That is exactly why

:32:46. > :32:50.run that through a programme and tell you the speed of the car at

:32:50. > :33:00.any point through a corner. The top teams don't have to scratch their

:33:00. > :33:05.

:33:05. > :33:11.heads any more to find out where cars as well as watching them. They

:33:11. > :33:15.can even tell you the gear ratios. Ted has some news on Paul di Resta.

:33:15. > :33:22.He is doing three timed runs on this sector, they are leaving it

:33:22. > :33:26.late. Not joining the early running. We haven't seen Jenson Button yet.

:33:26. > :33:33.Michael Schumacher is now coming out on a brand new set of soft

:33:33. > :33:43.tyres. He has only got one set left. I have a feeling Jenson Button will

:33:43. > :33:49.

:33:49. > :33:53.the Renault. When you have blowing exhausts working well, that is what

:33:53. > :33:59.you get when you stick your foot down. Completely missed the apex of

:33:59. > :34:04.the final corner. Senna remains in 14th place. Cost him dearly in the

:34:04. > :34:14.last corner. It was a better lap than that. Just under three minutes

:34:14. > :34:19.remaining. We are watching Adrian Sutil going into 12th place. 1:27.1.

:34:20. > :34:27.The fastest lap is a 1:24.6, it shows you the dominance of the Red

:34:27. > :34:31.Bull. Red Bull is the only team that can switch on the higher tyre

:34:31. > :34:35.and make it work. Some teams may only run that higher at the very

:34:35. > :34:40.end of the Grand Prix tomorrow. Or get it out of the way early on if

:34:40. > :34:46.there is a safety car. This track will evolve massively tomorrow. As

:34:46. > :34:56.resort in South Korea, you would have to do Malta ball stops. -- as

:34:56. > :35:02.

:35:02. > :35:08.Resta, Sutil, Barrichello, Maldonado, Senna and Perez are not

:35:08. > :35:14.in the top 10 shoot-out at the moment. Last man in his Buemi. A

:35:14. > :35:21.tenth slower than Michael Schumacher. This is Sebastien Buemi

:35:21. > :35:25.taking a little bit too much baguette! It seems as if they are

:35:25. > :35:35.fighting the car like crazy through the exit. You have to hustle a

:35:35. > :35:45.

:35:45. > :35:54.corner like that. That is being a number 17. Two personal bests so

:35:54. > :35:59.far. Just outside the top 10. Vettel remains fastest, from

:35:59. > :36:09.Hamilton and Alonso. Can Perez get himself up from 17th place? I

:36:09. > :36:13.

:36:13. > :36:17.suspect he can. He doesn't. He remaineds 17th. -- he remains 17.

:36:17. > :36:22.They lost Kobayashi straight away and now Perez looks like he will

:36:22. > :36:26.start behind -- alongside him on the grid. It looked like he was

:36:26. > :36:34.cruising through the turns. They have not found the sweet spot so

:36:34. > :36:42.far, Sauber. Sutil is on a better lap. 30 seconds remaining. Senna is

:36:42. > :36:48.a tenth of a second outside the top 10 at the moment. If he can spot

:36:48. > :36:57.that final corner better... Sebastien Buemi confirms a top ten

:36:57. > :37:07.slot. Senna does just make the apex. He only goes up to 12th place. He

:37:07. > :37:07.

:37:07. > :37:11.is right beside his team-mate. The session is over. Sutil gets himself

:37:11. > :37:21.in the top 10. That was a good effort. Schumacher down to 11th at

:37:21. > :37:29.

:37:29. > :37:35.the moment. Paul di Resta is on a 16th place. One corner to go. Perez

:37:35. > :37:39.is behind him as well. Maldonado crosses the line from 16th place

:37:39. > :37:43.and gets himself 12th place. Another good qualifying effort from

:37:43. > :37:47.Pastor Maldonado as the Force India comes across the line, Paul di

:37:47. > :37:54.Resta. He goes up to 12th place. Not ahead of his team-mate this

:37:54. > :37:58.time. Michael Schumacher is 12th and out at the moment. We are on

:37:58. > :38:05.board with the great man. Let's watch him negotiate the very wide

:38:05. > :38:13.entry into the final corner. He kisses the apex nicely. Schumacher,

:38:13. > :38:20.under pressure. Can he do it? No, he stays 12th. Rosberg is being in

:38:20. > :38:26.seventh. Eight-tenths faster than Michael Schumacher. We lose Petrov,

:38:26. > :38:33.Schumacher, di Resta, Maldonado, Senna, Barrichello and Perez. Not

:38:33. > :38:37.too many big surprises. The gap between Nico and Michael has been a

:38:37. > :38:45.surprise. Michael looked put up during the practice sessions. Paul

:38:45. > :38:49.di Resta will be disappointed. I think this is a really technical

:38:49. > :38:57.middle part of the track. If you just get a little bit out of

:38:57. > :39:01.sequence, the lap time drains away. That is how it stands. Toro Rosso

:39:01. > :39:11.will have the benefit of extra tyres for the race. Buemi gets

:39:11. > :39:40.

:39:40. > :39:44.himself in Q3 for the first time in coincide with me being here. It was

:39:44. > :39:50.a deliberate time in have a bit of a visit and a holiday and catching

:39:50. > :39:55.the Grand Prix at the end. It is potentially a milestone in India.

:39:55. > :40:00.We did see you hanging around a lot with Lewis. Is he in good shape?

:40:00. > :40:04.Yes, he seems to be in a good place. I don't claim any intimacy of true

:40:04. > :40:07.knowledge of the way his mind works, but I get the impression he has

:40:07. > :40:11.come through a difficult time for all sorts of different reasons and

:40:11. > :40:17.he has come out the other side of it. He seems to be calm and a great

:40:17. > :40:21.deal of equanimity about him. I think the future is bright. Thank

:40:21. > :40:29.you for joining us. Enjoy the rest of qualifying and the race tomorrow.

:40:29. > :40:37.Thank you. One man chilling out and sadly no longer in the car is

:40:37. > :40:47.Kobayashi, out in Q1. Are you disappointed with 18th place?

:40:47. > :40:47.

:40:47. > :40:54.Definitely. The last lap was pretty good but I had traffic.

:40:54. > :40:58.Unfortunately we are not strong enough. I had no luck as well.

:40:58. > :41:02.cricketers have just smashed England for six, a Bollywood

:41:02. > :41:07.superstar has just released Abreur new movie, but can Formula One

:41:07. > :41:12.begin to mix it with the best? -- a brand new movie.

:41:12. > :41:20.The green light is on, qualifying three is under way and we have got

:41:20. > :41:23.immediate action. Will we see 10 cars or will Sutil and the two Toro

:41:23. > :41:31.Rossos choose not to run because they have used up so many of their

:41:31. > :41:41.soft tyres to get this far? We have got Brown used soft tyres that have

:41:41. > :41:53.

:41:53. > :41:59.gone on the McLaren of Lewis starts tomorrow. 540 metres of DRS.

:41:59. > :42:07.It is so dirty now. Should be pretty amazing on the first lap of

:42:07. > :42:14.the Grand Prix as the drivers try to bring up the temperatures.

:42:14. > :42:19.hear that Massa has got a used option? It could be a sighter or a

:42:19. > :42:24.case of we will try to save a set of tyres. It will be interesting

:42:24. > :42:28.tomorrow. There isn't really a clean side of the grid because they

:42:28. > :42:33.come out of the last corner and make their way over to the left-

:42:33. > :42:37.hand side of the grid. A bit like in Malaysia. That means random

:42:37. > :42:45.potatoes spots rather than classic always left side or right side,

:42:45. > :42:50.clean or dirty side. We can see the grid just in front. Cars diagonally

:42:50. > :42:55.fall away. Just clipping pole position. It will not be a big

:42:55. > :43:03.advantage to be on one side or the other. That is a very good spot. It

:43:03. > :43:08.will be dirty off-line, we know that. Drivers used to clean it up

:43:08. > :43:17.on the warm ups. In qualifying you don't know what side of the grid

:43:17. > :43:22.York -- you will be on. More news from Ted. No sign of Jenson Button.

:43:22. > :43:29.Jenson Button, one set of soft tyres down, he is only going to do

:43:29. > :43:33.one run. He was compromised by that extra run he had to do in the first

:43:33. > :43:38.part of qualifying. He said he was struggling for regret, the car

:43:38. > :43:43.didn't feel right. Not a lot they can do about that. -- struggling

:43:43. > :43:51.for grip. They are in parc ferme conditions when they are not

:43:51. > :43:55.allowed to change the car. They could maybe for sake a little bit

:43:55. > :43:59.of in laps and things like that. Otherwise it is a case of running

:43:59. > :44:07.what you have run. You have had your two practice sessions to get a

:44:07. > :44:12.balance. Lewis Hamilton is at the end of the lap. On this lap, Alonso

:44:12. > :44:22.in that first sector was four- tenths faster. Hamilton, not a

:44:22. > :44:32.quick lap. Massa, 25.1. Alonso, 24.5. That is double park we are

:44:32. > :44:35.

:44:35. > :44:38.expecting. That confirms the old and new tyres between them. Mark

:44:38. > :44:44.Webber ending his first flying lap. This is not looking particularly

:44:44. > :44:47.fast. I wonder if they are doing anything lap on the first lap to

:44:47. > :44:52.then really use those tyres on the second lap and leave some life

:44:52. > :45:02.within that rubber. There's a chemical reaction that goes on in

:45:02. > :45:12.

:45:12. > :45:20.these tyres. We are seeing Hamilton of a second down. Lewis Hamilton

:45:20. > :45:30.has the fastest first sector. His strategy is working. The Sebastian

:45:30. > :45:31.

:45:31. > :45:39.Vettel yet to complete a flying lap. Sebastian Vettel goes fastest. Who

:45:39. > :45:46.can match that? Coming behind, Lewis Hamilton. The second for now.

:45:46. > :45:55.Still time to run again, of course. This is the final new set of soft

:45:55. > :45:58.tyres for Jenson Button. Normally, that is a wonderful feeling. But if

:45:58. > :46:08.Jenson Button has got balance issues, he will not be feeling

:46:08. > :46:09.

:46:09. > :46:19.fully confident. Mark Webber, very fast through the middle sector. 0.1

:46:19. > :46:20.

:46:20. > :46:25.shy, but still third on the grid. The top four covered by 0.1 seconds.

:46:25. > :46:33.Out on the track, Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg, Adrian Sutil, Jaime

:46:33. > :46:38.Alguersuari. All 10 drivers have gone out and put an effort in. We

:46:38. > :46:44.will see them on the track. Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton,

:46:44. > :46:51.Mark Webber, Fernando Alonso, covered by 0.1 seconds. Will

:46:51. > :46:59.Sebastian Vettel take his 13th pole position of the year? RADIO: You

:46:59. > :47:07.are second. Less than 0.05 behind Sebastian Vettel, the main time to

:47:07. > :47:12.be gained is in the middle sector. That sounds easy enough. But try

:47:12. > :47:22.and find it. It is interesting to see the different strategy is

:47:22. > :47:23.

:47:23. > :47:29.unfolding. McLaren were mighty in the first sector, but then they are

:47:29. > :47:39.losing it later on. There are only two corners in the first sector.

:47:39. > :47:39.

:47:39. > :47:46.And a very long straight. mechanical corners. They have got

:47:46. > :47:56.the car working well mechanically. Adrian Sutil, the only Force India

:47:56. > :47:57.

:47:57. > :48:04.in Q3. A big weekend for Force India. A new group have Cummins to

:48:04. > :48:11.take a slice of the action in the team. Here they are, the Indian

:48:11. > :48:16.Grand Prix. Adrian Sutil is coasting around. He is literally

:48:17. > :48:26.just coasting. It will sort out the order. We will not bore you with

:48:27. > :48:28.

:48:28. > :48:36.the details on that. Timo Glock, 24th, he did not complete a time,

:48:36. > :48:42.but he did a time in practice that was with him to 107% rule. I do not

:48:42. > :48:48.see any problems with starting tomorrow. It is not for me to say,

:48:48. > :48:54.it is for the stewards, but I am pretty confident. It is difficult

:48:54. > :49:04.to read, the drivers are coasting. When we think they are about to

:49:04. > :49:04.

:49:04. > :49:14.nail a lap, they are still coasting. Nico Rosberg, a personal best,

:49:14. > :49:15.

:49:15. > :49:25.first and second sector. 1.6 seconds away from pole position.

:49:25. > :49:27.

:49:27. > :49:32.Sixth on the grid. Jenson Button, 1:30.1. Nico Rosberg backed out, so

:49:32. > :49:42.that might be his only runner. He expected to be just outside the top

:49:42. > :49:44.

:49:45. > :49:52.three teams. Seventh is his regular slot. This is Fernando Alonso.

:49:52. > :50:02.is a long way off the pace. He will get round for another flying lap if

:50:02. > :50:05.he has enough fuel. Every lap of fuel is 0.1 seconds, the amount

:50:05. > :50:12.that it costs them. You can begin to understand what that means when

:50:12. > :50:20.you look at the small gap between the top cars. Some problems with

:50:20. > :50:28.Jenson Button. 50.5, first sector. He does not have enough time to get

:50:28. > :50:36.round and start his lap. Fernando Alonso is about to start. Lewis

:50:36. > :50:43.Hamilton, his final effort. Has he gone out in time? Well Lewis

:50:43. > :50:52.Hamilton get to the end of the lap before the clock ticks away? An

:50:52. > :50:59.awful long way to go. Jenson Button will start his lap. He crosses the

:50:59. > :51:07.line now. He is on a lap, 41.1, his first sector, 0.1 down. Lewis

:51:07. > :51:14.Hamilton is on his fast lap. 41.2, Sebastian Vettel. Toro Rosso have

:51:14. > :51:24.not bothered to set a lap times. It is corner by corner. An ordinary

:51:24. > :51:31.middle part of the lap. He has given up on it. Sebastian Vettel is

:51:31. > :51:39.flying even harder now. He has got to finish the lap. Lewis Hamilton

:51:39. > :51:45.has pitted. Look at Felipe Massa! His front corner was already

:51:45. > :51:52.damaged. It looked like a suspension failure or damage.

:51:52. > :51:56.Sebastian Vettel has increased his command at the front. He is 0.3

:51:56. > :52:02.seconds faster than Lewis Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel secures pole

:52:02. > :52:07.position. Nobody will be able to complete a particularly fast laps

:52:07. > :52:16.unless they happen to be passed this zone, because it out there at

:52:16. > :52:26.the moment, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button. It will compromise

:52:26. > :52:55.

:52:55. > :53:02.bigot, it was a full life of bread! -- not a baguette! That has

:53:02. > :53:08.exceeded the design load. A severe shock through the front suspension.

:53:08. > :53:13.It has broken there are. Congratulations to Sebastian Vettel,

:53:13. > :53:21.it was easy in the end. Lewis Hamilton second, but he drops down

:53:21. > :53:31.three places. It will be a Red Bull front row. Jenson Button with a

:53:31. > :53:33.

:53:33. > :53:37.tough day. The Toro Rosso cars will be delighted.

:53:37. > :53:44.Congratulations, your 13th pole position, at a Red Bull front row.

:53:44. > :53:49.Thank you! It was an interesting qualifying session, a new circuit,

:53:49. > :53:56.a new challenge, but I am very happy to be on the front row. I do

:53:57. > :54:02.not know whether being on the left or the right is an advantage or not.

:54:02. > :54:10.There is not one side that stands out to be Bickley inside. It was an

:54:10. > :54:16.interesting session. A good battle. After the first run, it was close.

:54:16. > :54:21.I knew I had to do a little bit better. I could have a clean up. It

:54:21. > :54:31.was interesting to see people going in different directions, how many

:54:31. > :54:32.

:54:32. > :54:37.laps they took before they started their timed lap. The first lap

:54:37. > :54:46.gives you some insecurity, because the tyre is not ready. But it

:54:47. > :54:56.worked. Tell us about your qualifying up. Did you get past

:54:57. > :54:59.

:54:59. > :55:04.Felipe Massa? He was heading into the gravel as I was coming up to it.

:55:04. > :55:12.I saw the tyre Marques, the smoke and the yellow flag. But I was in

:55:12. > :55:18.the yellow flags own already. -- yellow flag zone. A Red Bull front

:55:18. > :55:28.row, you start from second. I am happy, considering that we had the

:55:28. > :55:28.

:55:28. > :55:34.yellow flag on the last lap. It could have been a lot worse. To

:55:34. > :55:40.start on the front row, not being able to attack the final sectors,

:55:40. > :55:46.it is good in the end. It was a strong performance today, and you

:55:46. > :55:52.split Red Bull. Yes, I am pleased. I feel very proud that I could do

:55:52. > :55:58.that for the team, considering how hard they worked. It would be nice

:55:58. > :56:05.to be ahead of Red Bull, and it was unfortunate about the penalty, but

:56:05. > :56:09.that his life. A bit disappointed. This morning was good, but we

:56:09. > :56:16.struggled with understeer. The conditions got colder, which did

:56:16. > :56:21.not help. We are in reasonable shape over long distances, but

:56:21. > :56:27.qualifying was going to be crucial, and we did not maximise it.

:56:27. > :56:33.Formula One has arrived in India. It was not a classic, but it was

:56:33. > :56:38.not bad. It depends who you are. If you are Sebastian Vettel, it was

:56:39. > :56:43.the best ever, because he dominated it. If he goes along in that way

:56:43. > :56:48.tomorrow, it will be a pity, because he will be so dominant, he

:56:48. > :56:54.will be gone into the distance. have been around for a long time,

:56:54. > :56:59.has special visit to see a team get 16 pole positions in a season? --

:56:59. > :57:04.how special is it? I was there in the McLaren days when they won

:57:04. > :57:14.almost everything. We just heard from Christian Horner, this is a

:57:14. > :57:19.remarkable team effort. Full credit to them. There are four of their

:57:19. > :57:24.cars in the top 10. That is the dominance they are enjoying. It

:57:24. > :57:31.comes from the confidence. Sensible management, sensible and a ship,

:57:31. > :57:38.and the brilliance of the technical side. -- sensible ownership.

:57:38. > :57:45.McLaren are trying to win a winning car. They took pole position last

:57:45. > :57:49.time, second on the grid this weekend, frustration, because Lewis

:57:49. > :57:59.Hamilton takes a penalty. It would have been lovely to start on the

:57:59. > :58:01.

:58:01. > :58:07.front row. Yes, but that has not happened. I saw that Jenson

:58:07. > :58:14.Button's Chen was on the floor, he did not seem confident. He was

:58:14. > :58:20.talking about problems, the car not balancing act, and the problem here

:58:20. > :58:23.is the tyres. I have a concern about Jenson Button, but

:58:24. > :58:29.surprisingly, I think Lewis Hamilton is very strong, and he

:58:29. > :58:37.will want to prove himself in front of everybody. Plenty of rough-and-

:58:37. > :58:43.tumble on the track, and you can see more after us on the BBC,

:58:43. > :58:48.England against Wales, rugby league. It is 8:30am tomorrow morning for
