:01:17. > :01:27.This final corner, it feels incredible in the cockpit of a

:01:27. > :01:34.

:01:34. > :01:44.Victory here is extra special. To be on the top of the podium at

:01:44. > :01:56.

:01:56. > :02:02.Monza, with your own team, you They both go off! Amazing. Just

:02:02. > :02:12.like since the 20s, it is all about speed. If it is one thing we love,

:02:12. > :02:14.

:02:14. > :02:22.The Italian Grand Prix this year it is more thrilling than ever.

:02:22. > :02:27.Welcome to Monza. This place is three miles of Tarmac in a suburban

:02:27. > :02:31.pack, but I bet those people are not Italians. To the natives, this

:02:31. > :02:36.place is everything, a shrine to the past in a sport which is always

:02:36. > :02:43.looking to the future. Good afternoon and welcome to a hot and

:02:43. > :02:48.sunny Monza circuit for the qualifying live with myself and

:02:48. > :02:52.Eddie Jordan. What is the first thing that springs to mind? Passion

:02:52. > :02:59.and speed. Nine of the quickest ever races in Formula One have

:02:59. > :03:03.happened here. David Newall about speed in his career. I suppose the

:03:03. > :03:13.first thing that comes into your head when I say Monza is 1997.

:03:13. > :03:14.

:03:14. > :03:19.actually when I think of Monza, I think of the Italian fans. They are

:03:19. > :03:24.very special. You have this craziness. Look at them there, a

:03:24. > :03:29.sea of people. Even though clearly I am not driving for Ferrari, there

:03:29. > :03:34.was a lot of excitement about seeing a great Grand Prix. Where is

:03:34. > :03:38.that impressive trophy? McLaren keep the originals and I have a

:03:38. > :03:46.replica. Actually they keep the originals apart from the one which

:03:46. > :03:51.Alain Prost dropped off the podium! Never let a racing driver hold a

:03:51. > :03:54.real trophy because you never know where it will wind up the next day.

:03:54. > :04:01.There is a man talking from experience. Where are your

:04:01. > :04:06.trophies? There are so few. They are upstairs in a loft in my garage.

:04:06. > :04:10.Both of these men have won around here, which I guess was

:04:10. > :04:15.disappointing for the thousands of people in the grandstands. If you

:04:15. > :04:25.look in the podium, there is only one colour they want to see on the

:04:25. > :04:50.

:04:50. > :04:55.Suddenly we have arrived where it is very busy indeed. Somewhere

:04:55. > :04:58.behind this crowd is the Ferrari garage. There are hundreds of

:04:58. > :05:04.people and cameras, everyone hoping they can see something special this

:05:04. > :05:11.weekend. In 12 months ago we saw an incredible time for Ferrari but it

:05:11. > :05:14.will be a struggle to repeat that, won't it? So far in the Saturday

:05:14. > :05:21.morning practice, when the teams were focusing on qualifying,

:05:21. > :05:29.Ferrari have not had this Bach. None of these are three sectors

:05:29. > :05:32.have they been able to get close to that in times. Unless they pull out

:05:32. > :05:34.something special there will be some disappointed Italian.

:05:34. > :05:39.some disappointed Italian. imagined a small room somewhere at

:05:39. > :05:47.the Ferrari factory dedicated to this race. It is their most

:05:47. > :05:52.important race. They are used to... In the old days, we used to say,

:05:52. > :05:58.when we were in our three-litre engines, they were always allowed a

:05:58. > :06:04.3.5 litre car. It was called the Ferrari advantage at Monza. The

:06:04. > :06:10.fact is, Ferrari is expected to win here. People have come here in

:06:10. > :06:16.droves to see that and it is always a disappointment if they're not

:06:16. > :06:23.seeing them on the podium. Ferrari are going to do something,

:06:23. > :06:27.it will be difficult in places like Singapore, South Korea, Abu Dhabi?

:06:27. > :06:32.It is changing. Historically we would never even count on Red Bull

:06:32. > :06:36.being strong here, but it has changed. The DRS has added

:06:36. > :06:40.different perspective on racing because now people have more

:06:40. > :06:43.downforce in the knowledge they can use it in the race. The strategy

:06:43. > :06:49.has changed and therefore what we have been expecting to see,

:06:49. > :06:55.traditionally, has somewhat changed. Don't rule out the case that, you

:06:55. > :06:59.know, who expected Ferrari to win at Silverstone? Their emphasis is

:06:59. > :07:05.at Silverstone? Their emphasis is on the race, not the qualifying.

:07:05. > :07:09.talking about people surprising everyone, it was you in 2008 when

:07:09. > :07:14.Sebastian Vettel got his first win. You were driving that day, David,

:07:14. > :07:20.you were in the Red Bull. What did you learn about him that weekend?

:07:20. > :07:27.He was incredible. He was in pole position in the wet, and he showed

:07:27. > :07:32.his class. That has been the best success for Toro Rosso. Look at

:07:32. > :07:38.this, touching wheels with Mark Webber. It showed no sign of

:07:38. > :07:42.something to come in the future. It was a remarkable victory.

:07:42. > :07:47.surprise. You get a shot of the crowd and they are all wearing

:07:48. > :07:52.Ferrari caps. Ferrari are not only the fastest car at the moment, they

:07:52. > :08:02.are up against a man who picked up his first win here and has got used

:08:02. > :08:06.

:08:06. > :08:14.pole position, and Mark Webber just didn't get going. Felipe Massa in

:08:14. > :08:20.second place now. Rosberg takes the lead with tremendous straight line

:08:20. > :08:27.speed. Alonso so much faster. Hamilton

:08:27. > :08:32.fancies a look back. He defends well. No DRS at this point in the

:08:32. > :08:42.Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel with the speed, and takes the lead

:08:42. > :08:47.comfortably. Fernando Alonso powered off the top of the hill.

:08:47. > :08:52.has gone into deep. Alonso now has the racing line into the left-

:08:52. > :08:59.hander. Hamilton surely has a chance to get in there as well. He

:08:59. > :09:06.almost touched the grass to make it work. Alonso very fast again. He

:09:06. > :09:11.has got to go the long way round as they climbed the hill. Alonso comes

:09:11. > :09:20.are just in front of Mark Webber. Mark Webber fancies the run. They

:09:20. > :09:27.are so close. Alonso had to yield, and just as well heeded. They

:09:27. > :09:35.contacted. Hamilton into the barriers. He was clearly not a

:09:35. > :09:41.where he was there. Look how close Button is to Felipe Massa. He

:09:41. > :09:47.drives on the outside. He has got through. Another brave and

:09:47. > :09:55.sensational move from Button. This is Button again. Rosberg is on the

:09:55. > :10:00.outside but he has the rear wing wide open, and job done. Webber and

:10:00. > :10:07.Button catching Alonso very quickly. I don't think Alonso will fight

:10:07. > :10:11.that because he doesn't have the grip. Button right on top of Alonso.

:10:11. > :10:18.He lets him easily around the outside so Button is on to the

:10:18. > :10:23.podium. Our world championship leader, the reigning world champion,

:10:23. > :10:28.takes a victory here at the Belgian Grand Prix. Whatever they throw at

:10:28. > :10:31.him, he can handle it. Back to the top step of the podium,

:10:31. > :10:37.Sebastian Vettel, and the message from Red Bull is loud and clear.

:10:37. > :10:43.They have solved this problem where they have struggled at low

:10:43. > :10:48.downforce circuit. Absolutely, they have tackled their weakest point,

:10:48. > :10:52.which was overall speed in the long straights. They have come here with

:10:53. > :10:58.a nude diffuser and a new wing. In the qualifying session so far they

:10:58. > :11:02.have been very fast. It takes some effort by any team to beat them.

:11:02. > :11:06.You can see how hard they are working away with less than 40

:11:06. > :11:09.minutes to go until qualifying minutes to go until qualifying

:11:09. > :11:13.starts. Rest assured, they will be ready to go. Let's talk about Lewis

:11:13. > :11:18.Hamilton because many people have been questioning this weekend, has

:11:18. > :11:25.he got his brain in June with Formula One or is the letting

:11:25. > :11:30.outside influences affect him? is said to the journalists was a

:11:30. > :11:35.little bit of a swipe at them, they have been giving him a hard time.

:11:35. > :11:39.He has been used to the spotlight, he has been a world champion. I

:11:39. > :11:47.don't think we are seeing anything different. His criticism against

:11:47. > :11:54.the journalists, I believe, was to say "get off my back". He knows how

:11:54. > :12:01.to cope with movie-star as. He has been brilliant. He came out on the

:12:01. > :12:05.Monday after an said an apology. He said he had seen the tape and it

:12:05. > :12:10.was 100% his fault. I was really impressed with him and I think he

:12:10. > :12:15.will be strong here, to prove to everyone he means business.

:12:15. > :12:20.Hamilton is a great guy for bouncing back. I do believe he will

:12:20. > :12:25.bounce back. He has an enormous talent took away. He just needs to

:12:25. > :12:30.tidy it up. He can't keep doing what he did with Kobayashi, he

:12:30. > :12:36.can't keep doing what he did in Canada with Jenson Button. He needs

:12:36. > :12:41.to drive his own race. Just do his normal natural thing, and

:12:41. > :12:45.everything will flood back into place. That accident was bad news

:12:45. > :12:47.for Lewis Hamilton as far as the for Lewis Hamilton as far as the

:12:47. > :12:55.drivers' championship is concerned, and he is now sitting in 5th

:12:55. > :13:01.position. In the constructors Championship, it is of dominant

:13:01. > :13:11.season for Red Bull so far. David is with a man who had a great race

:13:11. > :13:14.

:13:14. > :13:17.In Spa, my heart was in my mouth. You haven't seen the movie with

:13:17. > :13:22.Fernando until after the race presumably. Any reflections on

:13:23. > :13:27.that? It was pretty tight at the bottom, you know what it is like

:13:27. > :13:35.when it is pretty steep and quick. I used to be tough KERS and I

:13:35. > :13:41.thought I might as well have a look, I will be on the right on side. It

:13:41. > :13:45.turned out OK in the end and obviously went up the hill and

:13:45. > :13:52.started that map. It was a good passing move and is great to have a

:13:52. > :13:56.battle with Fernando like that every now and again. It was

:13:56. > :14:02.spectacular, it will be played in years to come. What do you say to

:14:03. > :14:07.people who say it was a bit too much, you could have waited? Do you

:14:07. > :14:11.have anything to say to people with those comments? Not really because

:14:11. > :14:15.you can wait, I have done that several times this year, but at

:14:15. > :14:20.that time I thought it was definitely on. It turned out that

:14:20. > :14:27.it was. That was fantastic. What can you get done in Monza this

:14:27. > :14:34.afternoon? Qualifying should be going pretty well, I think. McLaren

:14:34. > :14:38.are going strong. Fernando can do a good job when it counts. There will

:14:38. > :14:43.be five guys that will be pretty tight actually and then the race is

:14:43. > :14:50.another story altogether. We have got different wing levels,

:14:50. > :14:54.different ratios, different DRS. Tactically, how people do it

:14:54. > :14:57.tomorrow will be the main part. Qualifying will be important but

:14:57. > :15:07.the race will be interesting in terms of those factors that changed

:15:07. > :15:14.

:15:14. > :15:19.Good luck this afternoon. Always lovely to see them making efforts!

:15:19. > :15:24.These fans I suspect may just be witnessing a bit of history today.

:15:24. > :15:30.Mark Webber is a confident guy. Here is all the latest news from

:15:30. > :15:34.Ted. Lewis Hamilton's win in Germany was

:15:34. > :15:39.the only time he has been on the podium in the last seven races.

:15:40. > :15:44.Following his crash in Belgium he hit back at allegations that he has

:15:45. > :15:50.been distracted by a so-called celebrity lifestyle. I live a

:15:50. > :15:56.normal life. I do not understand why I cannot have a relationship

:15:56. > :16:01.when everyone else can. The cameras are around me but when I go home I

:16:01. > :16:06.live a normal life and do normal things. I do not think they are a

:16:06. > :16:12.distraction at all. And Hamilton is not giving up on the Championship

:16:12. > :16:17.until it is mathematically impossible. I seem to be a magnet

:16:17. > :16:22.for trouble at the moment! I am trying to avoid that and I think

:16:22. > :16:29.again have some really good races. There is the chance to win all

:16:29. > :16:32.seven. So I am still hopeful. Jensen Button will be staying at

:16:32. > :16:38.McLaren next year. The team will be taking up their option on his

:16:38. > :16:42.services. An announcement is expected soon but Button is in the

:16:42. > :16:50.meantime eyeing another podium this weekend. Qualifying is important

:16:51. > :16:55.but it is not the fight in two-term one that it used to be. Red Bull

:16:55. > :17:01.are in the bad books with Pirelli after saying that their tyres where

:17:01. > :17:05.potentially unsafe in the last race. Pirelli have tightened up their

:17:05. > :17:11.camber limits and say they will be more strict with the teams in the

:17:11. > :17:18.future. We got through Belgium, it was a learning curve for all of us

:17:18. > :17:24.including Pirelli. Ferrari are coming to Italy with a new wing

:17:24. > :17:29.that they hope will give them a home win. Fernando Alonso explains

:17:29. > :17:35.the standards that are expected of you if you drive for Ferrari.

:17:36. > :17:42.have to fight for the title. This is what ferry means and what it is

:17:42. > :17:46.raising four. When your second or third as I am in the Championship

:17:46. > :17:51.it seems like a bad season while for the other teams it would be a

:17:51. > :17:55.nice surprise. Next year we will start again with the same

:17:55. > :18:01.determination and responsibility to do well and fight for the world

:18:01. > :18:09.Championship. Bruno Senna has been confirmed as replacement for Nick

:18:09. > :18:13.Heidfeld for the rest of the season. Robert Kubica hopes to be back in a

:18:13. > :18:18.racing car within the next month. And the calendar for next year has

:18:18. > :18:24.been confirmed. There are just eight races in Europe after the

:18:24. > :18:33.Turkish race has been dropped. And so the British Grand Prix is now

:18:33. > :18:37.just 10 months away. Looking at that Callander, the United States

:18:37. > :18:42.and the end of the year and then off to Brazil? It is all very

:18:42. > :18:47.exciting. But for me this season has been the most exciting one that

:18:47. > :18:52.I can recall. It just keeps getting better. So let's try to make sure

:18:52. > :18:57.that this year finishes off in spectacular form. We will focus on

:18:57. > :19:02.this year. And of course the tyres that Pirelli have brought to the

:19:02. > :19:07.races this year have been part of the excitement. A lot of talk there

:19:07. > :19:12.about Red Bull not been happy in the last race with their tyres. Can

:19:12. > :19:19.you just explain what the camber is, why it is there and why the teams

:19:19. > :19:22.like to push the envelope with it? Going back to Belgium, we ran three

:19:22. > :19:28.sessions in the rain so the teams did not really have their normal

:19:28. > :19:33.set up time which was the cause of most of the issues. When you are in

:19:33. > :19:38.a corner, it you get more Footprint, basically the amount of Robert

:19:38. > :19:44.touching the ground as you go around the corner. Some people have

:19:44. > :19:48.cars that can benefit from that and they pushed the limits. They don't

:19:48. > :19:56.just do it on the components of the car but on the tyres as well.

:19:56. > :20:01.have made certain advisory packages but have you actually talked-about

:20:01. > :20:06.toe in it as well? Because for me - is equally as big a problem.

:20:06. > :20:12.are right that that is important. But in this case, of on this

:20:12. > :20:19.circuit it is really the camber that we are concerned about. Can we

:20:19. > :20:22.just explained to go in for the people at home? Taupe in it

:20:22. > :20:31.actually helps to generate and makes them turn up in it easier.

:20:31. > :20:39.You need very good a front-end grip here. You're basically trying to

:20:39. > :20:49.avoid too much of the energy going into the shoulder of the tyres.

:20:49. > :20:51.

:20:51. > :20:58.that is the tyre facing in slightly? What would a road car

:20:58. > :21:03.have in terms of camber? For a normal road car, you barely see it.

:21:03. > :21:13.As these cars are going out of the pit lane you can see them leaning

:21:13. > :21:17.

:21:17. > :21:23.over in dramatic fashion. This year there has been trying -- there has

:21:23. > :21:27.been trying to break the tyres, to be honest. They can push the limits

:21:27. > :21:35.because the tyres are so robust and so the camber levels have been

:21:35. > :21:39.going up and up. And all the fans will be hoping that one team can

:21:39. > :21:44.look after their tyres and get to the finish before everyone else,

:21:44. > :21:51.and that team is Ferrari. When they come here they are reminded of

:21:51. > :22:01.their glorious past. And speaking of their glorious past, there

:22:01. > :22:05.

:22:05. > :22:10.always chasing that world It is amazing when you come to this

:22:10. > :22:15.place. You get the sense of history that Ferrari enjoys. They're not

:22:15. > :22:22.just famous for their cars but also the drivers. And here we have a

:22:22. > :22:26.former world champion and also Fernando Alonso. What is it like

:22:26. > :22:30.when you take a look at the kind of card that Ferrari were rolling a to

:22:30. > :22:40.the factory 40 years ago? It is interesting to see how Formula 1

:22:40. > :22:46.has developed and how we have ended up now, how different they look.

:22:46. > :22:52.But a lot stays the same. Can you believe however how much the sport

:22:52. > :22:58.has moved on? We basically had the technology of the 30s. You had

:22:58. > :23:03.three fuel tanks held together by a bunch of tubes around it which held

:23:03. > :23:08.on the four wheels. But it was the car of the time. So we did not go

:23:08. > :23:15.along saying, oh dear, we have no technology, because we did not know

:23:15. > :23:25.about it. Here is the team of 1964 in its entirety including the chief

:23:25. > :23:31.

:23:31. > :23:36.engineer and the team manager. many have you got now? 350, of 400.

:23:36. > :23:45.You fancy jumping in and see whether it a modern driver would

:23:45. > :23:50.fit in a classic car? The first thing that springs to mind is that

:23:50. > :24:00.you guys are now so much better protected. I think safety is one of

:24:00. > :24:04.

:24:04. > :24:09.the things that has got better. I have no seat belts! That is just a

:24:09. > :24:16.snapshot of what has happened in 40 years. I think also the style of

:24:16. > :24:21.driving has changed. The driver had the sensation 40 years ago, now

:24:21. > :24:28.everything is done automatically. Automatic manoeuvre is that you

:24:28. > :24:34.learn. John, how would you feel it this was the way you're racing now?

:24:34. > :24:40.Unhappy that it has got this complicated, in many ways? I think

:24:40. > :24:44.Formula 1 should be an example of technology advancement. So I

:24:45. > :24:49.welcome many of these things. I love about this car is that it

:24:49. > :24:59.did not change very much for years. Now you pretty much have a

:24:59. > :25:04.different car every race. When you go to the race track you want to

:25:04. > :25:14.see the big brands racing in each other. Maybe we went a little bit

:25:14. > :25:17.

:25:17. > :25:26.too far in terms of technology. It is like you have never been away

:25:26. > :25:31.from it! It is four wheels connected together. And whatever we

:25:31. > :25:39.have come up we have to try to get around the circuit as quickly as we

:25:39. > :25:44.can. These things have won so many world championships. Fans here,

:25:45. > :25:50.they feed off that. You know you have to be the leader here or

:25:50. > :26:00.people will be disappointed. We know that we need to win. This is

:26:00. > :26:00.

:26:00. > :26:05.our job. What you see today with Ferrari is absolutely incredible.

:26:05. > :26:14.Something that would have made Mr Ferrari very happy with what he had

:26:14. > :26:24.sown the seeds for. And from two old Ferrari winners to

:26:24. > :26:26.

:26:26. > :26:32.another one, John Alesi. Good of you to allow David to win here back

:26:32. > :26:37.in its 1997 when you came second! It was a tough race. I managed to

:26:37. > :26:43.keep him behind the then he took the lead and I tried very hard but

:26:43. > :26:51.I had no chance to take the lead again. You're such a nice guy and

:26:51. > :26:56.has been such a good ambassador for Formula 1. I almost feel guilty!

:26:56. > :27:03.really wanted to win in his lead but he deserved it. A win here is

:27:03. > :27:11.special but a winner for Ferrari is special. What is it like to win for

:27:11. > :27:21.this team? Well I remember it so well all the support from the

:27:21. > :27:21.

:27:21. > :27:26.public. It was really magical to drive for Ferrari in Italy. It was

:27:26. > :27:31.a difficult time, at the reliability was not quite there.

:27:31. > :27:37.But the public always help. And you got a lift from Michael Schumacher

:27:37. > :27:43.into the bargain it! That was an extra gift! That was an extra

:27:43. > :27:47.special weekend because another lap, Jordan would have finished in first

:27:47. > :27:56.and second. And John been on the top podium was an emotional day for

:27:56. > :28:04.me. You could not meet a nicer guy. And he made everyone so happy with

:28:04. > :28:09.his win. Tell us what it is like to drive for Ferrari, how great is the

:28:09. > :28:17.pressure to succeed on the driver personally? It is similar to

:28:17. > :28:27.playing for an national team and you have to kick for the World Cup.

:28:27. > :28:29.

:28:29. > :28:34.A penalty. It is like that in every lap. Enjoy the weekend. And you can

:28:34. > :28:39.catch up and talk more about the Jordan days. One thing you need

:28:39. > :28:49.around here is a powerful engine. They are on full throttle for 75%

:28:49. > :29:07.

:29:07. > :29:12.of the lap. The strong engine has The Ford Cosworth. Born in 1967, it

:29:12. > :29:20.is the most successful engine in Formula 1 history. Winning over 150

:29:20. > :29:30.races, it powered a golden generation. Over the line together,

:29:30. > :29:30.

:29:30. > :29:37.almost a dead heat! It was a fantastic engine. Working

:29:37. > :29:41.in any here, it was easy to drive. We still apply many of the

:29:41. > :29:45.engineering principles that were deployed in it racing engines for

:29:45. > :29:51.the first time in that engine. But of course it was a product of its

:29:51. > :30:00.time. Each of these three litre engines have cost Williams 26

:30:00. > :30:07.million. Today, up 200,000. But gone are the engines that are used

:30:07. > :30:11.and then thrown away. The modern engine can do many miles before

:30:11. > :30:16.they have to be thrown out. engines have to be reliable. You

:30:16. > :30:20.have to make sure you get to the finish to win the Championship.

:30:20. > :30:26.Each driver is only allowed eight engines per season. So the first

:30:26. > :30:30.will do the races in Australia and Malaysia were the 7th will do it

:30:31. > :30:40.elite. Engine eight will be used for three races at the end of the

:30:41. > :30:44.

:30:44. > :30:54.season. That is because Monza is Gone is the Ferrari V Twelve and

:30:54. > :31:02.the roar of the V turn. Many think that is a shame. That engine was

:31:02. > :31:10.incredible. Ferrari thought each part of the car needed to be

:31:10. > :31:14.involved, and that meant there was a lot of limitation. I would say

:31:14. > :31:22.that our Western culture promotes differences and this is one of the

:31:22. > :31:28.values of our life, so yes, being technical I love differences.

:31:28. > :31:35.engine is the beating heart of the car, what turns the metal into a

:31:35. > :31:39.fire breathing animal. It is not by accident that motor sport is called

:31:39. > :31:45.motor sport. The engine is the heart of the living, breathing

:31:45. > :31:49.racing car. A Formula One car, when you stick a starter or pits romp

:31:49. > :31:59.and make a noise, it is a bit violent event that makes everyone

:31:59. > :32:03.

:32:03. > :32:07.sit up and notice. In still makes people take notice. We are

:32:07. > :32:12.regularly blasted out by the noise. How impressed Abbey been by the

:32:12. > :32:17.fact formula One have learned to make engines last? It was not a

:32:17. > :32:23.natural thing for the sport. and the real hard core would still

:32:24. > :32:28.like to hear the v 12 engines, but at the end of the day we have to be

:32:28. > :32:36.mined for about the earth we live in. We have got to be concerned and

:32:36. > :32:40.passionate about conservation, so this is the sensible approach. The

:32:40. > :32:45.longevity of the engine as well, people need to be more reliable in

:32:45. > :32:52.every aspect of life. Nice to see Sir Jackie Stewart at the race as

:32:52. > :33:01.well. David, tell me the story after you said goodbye to Jean

:33:01. > :33:05.Alesi. It is important to control the rpm so they are limited to

:33:05. > :33:10.18,000. What I said about him was that in my first race he was behind

:33:10. > :33:14.me, and he was not happy I would not let him pass. Afterwards he was

:33:14. > :33:20.poking me in the chest saying you are the most incorrect driver I

:33:20. > :33:24.have ever raced against, just because I didn't let him pass!

:33:24. > :33:30.were incorrect for beating him. How dare you? The they are very

:33:30. > :33:39.passionate in Italy. The reason we have walked away from the garage is

:33:39. > :33:44.because the engine is building up, it is the engine of Bruno Senna. He

:33:44. > :33:49.had the best qualifying race of his career in the last race, and he

:33:49. > :33:59.wants to prove that everyone is yet to see the real Bruno Senna, and he

:33:59. > :34:13.

:34:13. > :34:18.It's a difficult situation because the type of perception I was

:34:18. > :34:22.getting for my performance was very poor. Sometimes the car didn't

:34:22. > :34:28.allow me to put a performance in, sometimes there was a lack of

:34:28. > :34:35.experience. I was absolutely frightened about that and it came

:34:35. > :34:45.to a point where I started this year with no job. Fortunately

:34:45. > :34:50.

:34:50. > :34:57.someone remembered something good, and it was Eric Boullier. In Spa,

:34:57. > :35:02.fortunately for me it is a good circuit. Bruno Senna in 7th, good

:35:02. > :35:07.effort. A great result in qualifying, it was pretty on

:35:07. > :35:16.expected to be that high up in my first qualifying session. Five

:35:16. > :35:20.lights, and then there hairpin awaits. Bruno Senna showing he is a

:35:20. > :35:28.bit rusty. I came to the first corner and I didn't brake hard

:35:28. > :35:32.enough. We are fighting for points, and last year we were taking a

:35:32. > :35:36.different approach. I should have been more careful because I wasn't

:35:36. > :35:40.sure exactly what the car was capable of doing. That was my first

:35:40. > :35:45.crash, and now I have a better reference to build from. The

:35:45. > :35:54.important thing to take from that race was that I did the whole race

:35:54. > :35:59.and the performance was really good, and the team were happy. Monza is

:35:59. > :36:03.one of those tracks where precision is king, and you have to be precise.

:36:03. > :36:10.It is difficult to be precise when the car is moving around because

:36:10. > :36:13.you have less downforce. Every time you go around this track, you think

:36:13. > :36:18.I didn't get it right, I need to get it right in the next lap, then

:36:18. > :36:28.you get something else wrong and it is a never-ending chase for the

:36:28. > :36:28.

:36:28. > :36:34.right lap. I didn't do too bad, I had pretty good success. The

:36:34. > :36:43.McLaren and Ferrari fight, it was on the downside. It will be very

:36:43. > :36:49.difficult here because racing is close, it is exciting, but the guys

:36:49. > :36:54.have more racing mileage and an advantage. With less than 15

:36:54. > :36:58.minutes to go until qualifying starts, we have made our way out of

:36:58. > :37:03.the paddock, where you can see Vitaly Petrov going to his car. He

:37:03. > :37:08.has a different team mate, the team dropped Nick Heidfeld and put Bruno

:37:08. > :37:12.Senna in the car. It seems that was an inspired decision? I was

:37:12. > :37:17.critical of the team at the time, and who is to say they were the

:37:17. > :37:22.clever people in the end? Bruno Senna brought a great qualifying

:37:22. > :37:25.lap, but more importantly to the team they brought extra cash. He

:37:25. > :37:31.brought sponsors. The car is already littered with sponsors

:37:31. > :37:34.coming from Brazil, and that is an important aspect. I'm sure for a

:37:34. > :37:39.young driver it is difficult to retain your Focus, especially in a

:37:39. > :37:43.place like this. Lots of stars come and gather here but he has to keep

:37:43. > :37:51.his mind on the job and he has asked the team to be hard on him.

:37:51. > :37:56.What does he mean by that? They would be naturally hard on him if

:37:56. > :37:59.he is not performing anyway. He has one of the most famous uncles and

:37:59. > :38:05.the history of the sport and has been surrounded by celebrities, so

:38:05. > :38:09.in many ways this is a natural environment. Ins bar his qualifying

:38:09. > :38:13.performance made a lot of people sit up and take notice. A big race

:38:14. > :38:19.rusty at the start, we will not hold that against him?

:38:19. > :38:23.Understandable? Yes, it is understandable. I would be raised

:38:23. > :38:30.rusty, even after 15 seasons so let's see how he performs this

:38:30. > :38:34.weekend. We have noticed something that needs a bit of explanation.

:38:34. > :38:40.This man can't keep his hands off the other Formula One drivers. He

:38:40. > :38:46.had a cake fight with Sebastian Vettel, he had a cuddle with Jenson

:38:46. > :38:51.Button. I'm not sure what the commentators were up to there,

:38:51. > :38:57.before he sorted out Michael's shirt. Why can't you keep your

:38:57. > :39:04.hands to yourself? By just love racing drivers, that is why I

:39:04. > :39:09.became one. Mr tactile. You don't touch me, why not? Am I not the

:39:09. > :39:15.right age group? David went round the track with someone I am

:39:15. > :39:23.guessing is in the right age group, Alguersuari. You are from a country

:39:23. > :39:29.where everyone is very affectionate. What I think is quite remarkable is

:39:29. > :39:32.that you were born in 1990. This great historic racetrack here, the

:39:32. > :39:38.original one, it is like prehistoric in comparison to the

:39:38. > :39:44.Grand Prix that you would have watched as a kid. I have never seen

:39:44. > :39:48.racing on the old track here. you been out on it? Yes, I have

:39:48. > :39:54.been on one piece of it when it was the old big banking but I have

:39:54. > :39:59.never seen a race here. This is the start of the old banking. Can you

:39:59. > :40:04.comprehend having raced on it? I can't imagine if you have some

:40:04. > :40:08.oversteer on this banking, how would you feel? It is quite

:40:08. > :40:12.remarkable when you see the drop down to the first chicane, the

:40:12. > :40:17.sense of history you out in Monza, is that important to your

:40:17. > :40:21.generation? It is something cool, because you know it has been

:40:21. > :40:26.something in the past when racing was incredible. It is not like you

:40:26. > :40:30.feel when you go to India where the tracks are new and you don't feel

:40:30. > :40:38.anything so it makes it very cool. We have stopped at the entry here,

:40:38. > :40:44.we have been passed the chicane because it is not as exciting as

:40:44. > :40:53.this corner. What is interesting is how flat the curve is. A you can

:40:53. > :40:58.take much more speed than normal. You almost need to respect what is

:40:58. > :41:05.illegal and what is illegal so you always need to have two wheels on

:41:05. > :41:11.the white line and never put all the wheels out here. More fuel, new

:41:11. > :41:16.tyres, attacking these corners. love it, it is so good. We are

:41:16. > :41:26.coming to the end of the lap now, exiting Parabolica. I used to love

:41:26. > :41:27.

:41:28. > :41:37.the run-out here because it is one of the fastest points of the track.

:41:38. > :41:40.

:41:40. > :41:50.That is a very traditional song. That is something I wanted to ask

:41:50. > :41:56.you about, DJ as quiet. I am who I am, but I have another life, which

:41:56. > :42:02.is music. I am called a Squire because this is the way I want to

:42:02. > :42:07.show people my sound. I you're there thinking about music when you

:42:07. > :42:12.are driving the car? It is something you have in your mind and

:42:12. > :42:15.it is an emotion. You have adrenaline, you feel you are the

:42:15. > :42:21.boss, you are God, then you take off the helmet and you realise you

:42:21. > :42:25.are not. I do feel I am a super hero when I drive it. I want people

:42:25. > :42:32.to understand my emotion and they can feel what I feel, and music is

:42:32. > :42:38.the way to do it. One thing you are is a Formula One driver, so you are

:42:38. > :42:44.no longer known as a DJ, good luck with the Formula One.

:42:44. > :42:49.disappointing lack of affection at the end. That suddenly turned into

:42:49. > :42:53.an Eric Cantona style interview. Is it important to have Bashir has a

:42:53. > :42:57.weight on the racetrack? It is important for them because the high

:42:57. > :43:03.pressure they are surrounded by here, with the whole world looking

:43:03. > :43:07.at them, they need to get their own time. In my day I used to go off in

:43:07. > :43:13.a rowing boat, I just felt in touch with the different elements, that

:43:13. > :43:16.gave it to me. His is clearly music and I can understand that very well

:43:17. > :43:22.because I am passionate about that anyway. Everyone needs to find

:43:22. > :43:27.their own space. Whatever you do, don't call him DJ Squire because

:43:27. > :43:32.you will be in trouble. How can McLaren go today? It has been a

:43:32. > :43:36.tough weekend so far. Martin, what shape our McLaren in

:43:36. > :43:42.going into qualifying? We don't know. We looked strong yesterday,

:43:42. > :43:46.it was a tough session today. We are definitely competitive. Red

:43:46. > :43:49.Bull and Ferrari look strong, Mercedes look like they are in the

:43:49. > :43:54.hunt as well so that is great for the sport and we will have an

:43:54. > :43:58.exciting qualifying now. We believe we are quick enough to be on the

:43:58. > :44:04.front row and I would very much like us to be on pole position.

:44:04. > :44:09.Jenson Button would like to improve on 13th place, which is what he got

:44:09. > :44:19.in his bath. For these fans, that nothing is Red Bull looked the

:44:19. > :44:21.

:44:21. > :44:26.Very noble of Maarten to say such a thing. But deep down he is so

:44:26. > :44:35.passionate about his team. But no more passionate group than those in

:44:35. > :44:40.front of you now. Everything about this place revolves around Ferrari.

:44:40. > :44:45.That is all they care about. It does not matter were the drivers

:44:45. > :44:52.come from. And perhaps they can just find that extra speed to give

:44:52. > :45:02.us an amazing qualifying session around here. 24 cars to start with.

:45:02. > :45:13.

:45:13. > :45:18.The 7th slowest drivers are about are searching for the fastest car

:45:18. > :45:23.and driver combination on the fastest of the Grand Prix circuits.

:45:23. > :45:29.80% of the lap is spent at full throttle. Top speeds approaching

:45:29. > :45:34.220 miles an hour. You need a very special car set up for this track.

:45:34. > :45:39.You do indeed. Top speeds around here and traditionally this is

:45:39. > :45:49.where power and low drag would be the winner. But this year of course

:45:49. > :45:52.

:45:52. > :46:01.we have the DRS and KERS. Sole less focused on Oldham at top speed and

:46:01. > :46:06.quite a different strategy between the teams. Qualifying is going to

:46:06. > :46:10.be very exciting because if you run your car for maximum qualifying

:46:10. > :46:20.performance you will compromise yourself for the race set-up.

:46:20. > :46:32.

:46:32. > :46:37.Because you do not have DRS available. In Belgium was all quite

:46:37. > :46:45.top speeds and long straights and we have exactly the same thing here

:46:45. > :46:55.with quite high temperatures. di Montezemolo there, at the

:46:55. > :47:04.

:47:04. > :47:14.Ferrari boss lady at the crowd. They call him a word that basically

:47:14. > :47:23.

:47:23. > :47:27.means the fan. The story a Kent this morning is about camber. How

:47:27. > :47:34.much they mean that top of the tyres in. As we sought in Belgium

:47:34. > :47:43.two weeks ago, an important aspect is the limitations of the camber.

:47:43. > :47:49.It is a dynamic setting that means 220 miles an hour, the end of the

:47:49. > :47:54.straight, that is the limitations that they have got. If you're

:47:54. > :47:58.outside the recommendations of the rally you may get penalised for

:47:58. > :48:03.safety reasons. That is something quite remarkable that has been

:48:03. > :48:07.introduced. I think what was played out in Belgium we were not aware of

:48:07. > :48:17.much of it until Sunday morning. But the debate went on long between

:48:17. > :48:19.

:48:19. > :48:24.Red Bull and Pirelli and I think basically the FIA to not want to

:48:24. > :48:27.have to deal with that. So have they looked to the tyre

:48:27. > :48:32.manufacturers and they said they can penalise a team if they operate

:48:32. > :48:39.outside the recommended limits. because the tyres could blow up and

:48:39. > :48:45.Pirelli are saying that people will not be blaming the teams, they will

:48:45. > :48:54.blame Pirelli and they do not want them to do that. Jarno Trulli says

:48:54. > :49:00.it does not do much for him, as a southern Italian. This place does

:49:00. > :49:05.not feel especially significant for him but he does enjoy racing here.

:49:05. > :49:10.After Alonso had his first winner for Renault and was asked to give a

:49:10. > :49:18.message to the Spanish people he said, no message, they did not win

:49:18. > :49:22.the Championship. So we are just a minute away from the start of

:49:22. > :49:27.qualifying on the 20 minute session. In the last six consecutive races a

:49:27. > :49:31.driver has been eliminated in qualifying first-round and has gone

:49:31. > :49:39.on to win Championship points the next day. It is not the stigma that

:49:39. > :49:49.it used to be. Well a lot has changed, it was just a sprint to

:49:49. > :49:54.the last pit stop. Now we have KERS proved that the drivers have to

:49:54. > :49:58.play out the strategy and that is why I think what decision they make

:49:58. > :50:08.here for the race will be crucial. The first round of qualifying is

:50:08. > :50:09.

:50:09. > :50:13.under way. We have Jarno Trulli on the track, in the Lotus. How do you

:50:13. > :50:19.think the tyre strategy will play out here? We have seen with the

:50:19. > :50:26.softer compound, teams are still having to do several laps to get

:50:26. > :50:36.the best time after them. That has always been the case here in the

:50:36. > :50:47.

:50:47. > :50:54.past. You can travel about 20 metres and you could be breaking

:50:54. > :51:00.too early. And it takes the drivers a couple of laps to get their head

:51:00. > :51:04.into 220 mph arrival speeds. You do not do that anywhere else. Farrelly

:51:04. > :51:10.are also saying to the teams that if they do not take the performance

:51:10. > :51:20.out of the tyres in the first two laps, that will hurt them later run.

:51:20. > :51:24.So they could pay the price in the race tomorrow. Exactly. So if you

:51:24. > :51:29.have taken too much out of your tyres for one single that you could

:51:29. > :51:33.be in a difficult situation for the race. So a lot of strategy going

:51:33. > :51:39.into this qualifying session, I suspect more than any other race

:51:39. > :51:44.this season. Ted has some news. Down the back of field in practice

:51:44. > :51:49.this morning Daniel Ricciardo has a real hill to climb up if he is to

:51:49. > :51:56.get any kind of result in possession. He did not take much

:51:56. > :52:06.part in it at all. And Pastor Maldonado also have had a failure

:52:06. > :52:12.

:52:12. > :52:18.at the end of practice with the KERS. Band Nico Rosberg still has

:52:18. > :52:22.some set up work to do. We heard some comments about Jensen

:52:22. > :52:27.Button on the radio this morning saying he does not quite have the

:52:27. > :52:33.balance and the grip. But when he is happy with his car he's

:52:33. > :52:43.unbeatable. But unless he has found a magic cure, as they go under the

:52:43. > :52:49.

:52:49. > :52:53.old bank... We will talk more about that tomorrow. So we now have 15

:52:53. > :53:03.cars on the race track. If they need to do more laps to get their

:53:03. > :53:06.

:53:06. > :53:12.best lap in we're going to a year a lot about blocking, I suspect.

:53:12. > :53:20.will be carrying a bit of extra fuel which will cost them around a

:53:20. > :53:30.10th of a lap to carry that. But having the ability to do an extra

:53:30. > :53:37.couple of laps is going to be beneficial. Heikki Kovalainen the

:53:37. > :53:47.man we are looking at now. Those new speed bumps Rayleigh are

:53:47. > :53:50.

:53:50. > :53:54.challenging the drivers. -- really are. The drivers actually had them

:53:54. > :53:59.changed with the Configuration at the chicane because they felt there

:53:59. > :54:05.was the potential to damage the car. So many drivers were going straight

:54:05. > :54:09.on at the first and second chicane and then just straight back on to

:54:09. > :54:14.the race track, now 80 really is a challenge to navigate your way

:54:14. > :54:22.through those speed bumps without damaging your car. I said this

:54:22. > :54:32.morning to Michael Schumacher of a breakfast, he said it really is a

:54:32. > :54:37.

:54:37. > :54:44.problem. He said actually it might damage the car. Rubens Barrichello,

:54:44. > :54:49.he won this Grand Prix two years ago. And he is under way in the

:54:49. > :54:57.Williams on a hot lap. He has struggled a little bit as has

:54:57. > :55:07.Pastor Maldonado. Not particularly fast here. If you think of the top

:55:07. > :55:17.four teams, the next best looks like Force India. And some were

:55:17. > :55:18.

:55:18. > :55:24.have been looking pretty good as -- Sauber. It is all about how they

:55:24. > :55:31.manage to get a clean black peer. So much momentum necessary for

:55:32. > :55:41.these long, clear Straits. Jensen Button the first man into one

:55:42. > :55:45.

:55:45. > :55:55.minute 24. Still trying to fine- tune that McLaren. To control the

:55:55. > :55:56.

:55:56. > :56:06.vertical movement of the car over the bumps. Where on board with

:56:06. > :56:07.

:56:07. > :57:04.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds

:57:04. > :57:09.struggling this weekend's through Acorah has been its slippery this

:57:09. > :57:14.weekend after we hear more from Ted Dannatt Red Bull. Red Bull are

:57:14. > :57:20.taking things very easily. There's nothing wrong with the car. Mark

:57:20. > :57:25.Webber just getting into it now. He is the only one of the top guys not

:57:25. > :57:35.to have taken a fresh engine this weekend. Sebastian Vettel has and

:57:35. > :57:42.

:57:42. > :57:50.he is out there now. And here is the Parabolica corner. It has been

:57:50. > :58:00.resurfaced. But the oil that goes into that will be ripping out.

:58:00. > :58:00.

:58:00. > :58:07.Making it slippery. That is the darker tarmac that you can see

:58:07. > :58:13.there. Michael Schumacher's said this morning that there is plenty

:58:14. > :58:23.of grip on the racing line. But to go off that if it rains, it will be

:58:24. > :58:36.

:58:36. > :58:44.terrifying. Bruno Senna in his second race for the Lotus team. And

:58:44. > :58:54.we have got a yellow flag. What is going on their? Lots of smoke.

:58:54. > :58:56.

:58:56. > :59:06.Pastor Maldonado has been gyrating on the exit of the Parabolica. Not

:59:06. > :59:09.

:59:10. > :59:17.to be recommended. It is not a corner in the past... It just feels

:59:17. > :59:24.like a huge amount of load being put on you're axle. Pastor

:59:24. > :59:32.Maldonado has not done a lap time. Do they have time to fix that car?

:59:32. > :59:42.Did the rear wing hit the barrier? Of course that is easy to change in

:59:42. > :00:05.

:00:05. > :00:09.the pit. But Pastor Maldonado could action, but now back to the track

:00:09. > :00:14.as we watch Lewis Hamilton go through this chicane, where you are

:00:14. > :00:20.allowed to run wide through the exit. That confuses me because in

:00:20. > :00:30.other places you get penalised. Why do you think it is acceptable to

:00:30. > :00:33.

:00:33. > :00:41.run all four wheels off the road in one place? I think it is decided to

:00:41. > :00:46.put any high kerbs, with the speed of the car, it could launch the car.

:00:46. > :00:50.It was felt the lesser of two evils was to allow the driver to run wide

:00:50. > :00:56.and everyone is doing it sono big advantage gained for one individual.

:00:56. > :01:06.The fastest time we have seen this morning was from Sebastian Vettel

:01:06. > :01:12.

:01:12. > :01:20.this morning. Lewis Hamilton the first man into the 1: 23s, just.

:01:20. > :01:25.Are you surprised that he is surprised? I am surprised, Surrey.

:01:25. > :01:30.I am surprised he was surprised he has been a balanced shift but maybe

:01:30. > :01:33.he is just re-enacting what happened. They built these Williams

:01:33. > :01:41.suspensions strong. They have not had to change anything major on the

:01:41. > :01:47.car, they just put a new front wing on. Maldonado would have been

:01:47. > :01:53.practising whereabouts he can use that weighing in practice. Indeed,

:01:53. > :01:57.he did. Schumacher has gone up into 6th place and the Mercedes are so

:01:57. > :02:07.fast in the first sector. They have been flying through practise as

:02:07. > :02:13.Philip -- Felipe Massa goes into 5th place. The Renault cars have

:02:13. > :02:18.gone with the strategy of having a very low wing. You can see Mark

:02:18. > :02:24.Webber is getting his eye in here, still on the hard tyres of course,

:02:24. > :02:30.so no big pressure at this stage. It will be interesting to see if

:02:30. > :02:40.Maldonado does go out. At the moment in the drop zone, as you can

:02:40. > :02:46.

:02:46. > :02:52.see on your television screen. Rosberg posted the fastest first

:02:52. > :02:58.sector again, and you were telling us why Mercedes is so quick. That

:02:58. > :03:02.first sector is all about straight line. It is great to power down and

:03:02. > :03:08.accelerate, and it may be they have gone with the strategy to optimise

:03:08. > :03:14.engine power, that means running longer ratios for qualifying, and

:03:14. > :03:18.some of the other cars may be concentrating on the race where you

:03:18. > :03:24.can't use DRS everywhere. You can't use it here first example, running

:03:24. > :03:28.up to Parabolica. You will be out of the peak power on the engine so

:03:28. > :03:36.this is why strategy in qualifying, and what we will see tomorrow, is

:03:36. > :03:46.going to be very interesting. Indeed. Nico Rosberg heads for the

:03:46. > :03:50.line, and goes into 6th place. His top speed is about 322 kilometres

:03:50. > :04:00.per hour. That is at the finish line, incredibly. Six minutes

:04:00. > :04:10.

:04:10. > :04:17.take to the track, and there is Timo Glock for the Virgin team. At

:04:17. > :04:21.the moment a couple of tenths ahead of his team-mate. He is looking for

:04:21. > :04:26.the extra grip because those at the back of the field know that this is

:04:26. > :04:30.about grid position for them. If they don't clear the bar into Q2,

:04:31. > :04:39.this is where they will start the race tomorrow so this is important

:04:39. > :04:45.to get the soft tyres on, the DRS wide-open to give them another 10

:04:46. > :04:53.mph. Slightly scary, they have taken the tree out of the run-off

:04:53. > :04:58.area. The new tarmac is all weighed down to the Parabolica corner. So

:04:58. > :05:05.much a straight line here, which is why you put those skinny tea-tray

:05:05. > :05:11.wings on the back. At the moment it is Bruno Senna or in 17th, and the

:05:11. > :05:18.final man in. He will have to go on to a set of soft tyres. He is out

:05:18. > :05:28.on the track now. Someone has just pitied, cars on the racetrack. Will

:05:28. > :05:40.

:05:40. > :05:43.the front runners feel the need to go out in the one -- the 1: 24s.

:05:43. > :05:48.They are all out on a set of soft tyres, trying to get themselves

:05:48. > :05:53.comfortably through to the next phase of qualifying. Louis Hamilton

:05:53. > :06:03.remains the fastest. Both Force Indias coming down the back

:06:03. > :06:05.

:06:05. > :06:10.straight. This is Sergio Perez coming into Parabolica. At the

:06:10. > :06:20.moment he is 16th, and he really needs to pop a lap time in. He does

:06:20. > :06:30.so, and he is up into 10th place on the softer compound tyre. Buemi

:06:30. > :06:31.

:06:31. > :06:39.goes through, too, but he is in 15th place. Here is Kovalainen. Two

:06:39. > :06:45.personal best going on for him so far in this lap. A lot of fun

:06:45. > :06:52.dustier on the last corner there, he had to wait an eternity. It is

:06:52. > :07:02.so important on this straight before start Kovalainen remains in

:07:02. > :07:12.

:07:12. > :07:19.done now, no second chances for him after that error. There is plenty

:07:19. > :07:29.going on at the back of the field. Bruno Senna has dropped down to

:07:29. > :07:32.

:07:32. > :07:36.18th, Kobayashi is in 17th. Michael Schumacher is in the pits, but

:07:36. > :07:42.drops down to 11th as well because Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil are

:07:42. > :07:52.ahead of him. That is Kobayashi going over the line, and only doing

:07:52. > :07:57.

:07:57. > :08:01.a one minute 27.4. -- 1: 27.4. Two minutes remaining so they can get

:08:01. > :08:07.another two laps in. They have got time in hand, but do they have the

:08:07. > :08:17.fuel, the tyres and the fundamental speed in the car? Rubens

:08:17. > :08:21.

:08:21. > :08:25.Barrichello is up into 13th place at the moment. Trulli in 19th. A

:08:26. > :08:32.set of soft tyres on that Sauber and they are really fighting hard

:08:32. > :08:39.for it. They looked so good yesterday. Kobayashi once again

:08:39. > :08:47.under a lot of pressure in the very first phase of qualifying. Up

:08:47. > :08:54.shifting through the exit, how was it going on this lap? Not a

:08:54. > :08:58.particularly good first sector. We have got 15 cars remaining on the

:08:58. > :09:06.track. As expected, all the front runners stayed in the pits, they

:09:06. > :09:13.thought they had done enough. Kobayashi goes up into 16th, Buemi

:09:13. > :09:20.down into 17th. Bruno Senna et in 10th place so that comfortably get

:09:20. > :09:25.him ahead of Adrian Sutil. So now Kobayashi is the last man in at the

:09:25. > :09:34.moment. Maldonado has fallen back down to 16th place, but on a better

:09:34. > :09:40.lap. Trulli has gone into 19th place and Buemi is out at the

:09:40. > :09:46.moment. They are absolutely driving every metre of this racetrack.

:09:46. > :09:56.Driving it to the maximum because every hundred the the second counts

:09:56. > :10:02.

:10:02. > :10:07.now. -- hundredth. They are all doing best medal sectors, Maldonado

:10:07. > :10:17.as well. Alguersuari has got himself in 14th place at the moment

:10:17. > :10:20.

:10:20. > :10:29.and the flak has -- the flag has gone out. We watch them coming

:10:29. > :10:36.through to the end of the lap. Kobayashi copied to 11th place,

:10:36. > :10:40.Adrian Sutil has gone faster as well. Rubens Barrichello is still

:10:40. > :10:50.out on track, under pressure. Alguersuari has not got a good lap

:10:50. > :10:51.

:10:51. > :10:55.going on. The tail Enders are fixing their grades. What we want

:10:55. > :11:05.to know is Barrichello, as he comes over the line, he has not appeared

:11:05. > :11:05.

:11:05. > :11:10.in vision yet. It remains Trulli, Kovalainen. Alguersuari then, your

:11:10. > :11:15.track guide specialist. He says he feels like a god when he is driving

:11:15. > :11:21.this car, he will not feel that when he steps out this time.

:11:21. > :11:25.will be very disappointed with that. His final lap there, he aborted, so

:11:26. > :11:34.he tails off what could have been. He knew they were vulnerable in

:11:34. > :11:42.this part of qualifying, but as you said, how many cars who have been

:11:42. > :11:52.the first of four have ended up in the points in Grand Prix? -- the

:11:52. > :12:05.

:12:05. > :12:11.of Liuzzi. Timo Glock, just checking out the DRS activation on

:12:11. > :12:16.his wing. We saw him this morning spinning off on one of the chicanes

:12:16. > :12:21.because it stayed open when it should not have. There is a

:12:21. > :12:30.regulation, that it should do automatically. We saw him go

:12:30. > :12:36.straight down the escape route on me sleeping policemen. That is a

:12:36. > :12:41.topic for them. We know who is not hot this afternoon, those who are

:12:41. > :12:46.out, but at the front it was Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and

:12:46. > :12:54.Jenson Button. The usual suspects that the front, very much the usual

:12:54. > :12:57.suspects at the back of the grid as well. Having the usual suspect at

:12:57. > :13:04.the back is really starting to grate on Eddie Jordan. You were

:13:04. > :13:09.chewing my year off about the teams needing to improve and do better.

:13:09. > :13:13.We are getting used to it. What is the one thing we always put down as

:13:13. > :13:18.a certainty - the three new teams anchored to the rear of the grid

:13:18. > :13:21.and that is unacceptable for me. I can't see where any of these three

:13:21. > :13:27.teams, they are not showing a demonstration to anyone they will

:13:27. > :13:31.get out of the situation they are currently in. Is it a sign of the

:13:31. > :13:35.times that it is so expensive. don't want to continually blame

:13:35. > :13:38.money because that is the easiest argument in the book. They have

:13:38. > :13:43.talented drivers, talented people but they are not putting it

:13:43. > :13:47.together. I want to see a spurt from at least one of these teams

:13:47. > :13:51.because collectively they are not demonstrating to me any sign that

:13:51. > :13:54.they have either the will power, they have either the will power,

:13:54. > :13:59.the mentality, the mind, the finances to move up the grid.

:13:59. > :14:06.Another team making heavy work of this season with an incredible

:14:06. > :14:12.pedigree are the Williams team. Alguersuari was the victim of this

:14:12. > :14:17.crash, and we think Maldonado was too early on the BRS. It is too

:14:17. > :14:21.early to say but how lucky was he able to get back out and in

:14:21. > :14:27.contention, so we all have a deep down passion for Williams because

:14:27. > :14:31.we know what Frank can do, Patrick Head Sam Michael, for as long as he

:14:31. > :14:35.will be there. They have a history of pedigree, they are a team of

:14:36. > :14:40.champions, everybody loves Williams but we don't like where they are at

:14:40. > :14:44.the moment. I am sure they can bounce back. Impressive for

:14:44. > :14:54.Maldonado to go back out and finished 11th. Alguersuari was the

:14:54. > :14:58.victim in that session, I suppose he will take -- take heart that he

:14:58. > :15:04.can pick up points. Yes but right now he is distraught. He doesn't

:15:04. > :15:11.understand. He wishes he didn't give David Coulthard a big hug

:15:11. > :15:14.because this is the kiss of death! His head is in his hands. He is

:15:14. > :15:19.wondering what have I got done here because this is a great chance to

:15:19. > :15:29.make a real big race of it and he has failed. One man not far behind

:15:29. > :15:30.

:15:30. > :15:38.A man who was not far behind him was Jarno Trulli. And here he is

:15:38. > :15:43.now. You must be happy with that lap, it was a strong lap for you.

:15:43. > :15:50.think the last lap would have been even better but I do not mind. We

:15:50. > :15:55.make some changes from yesterday. And it was a good improvement. I'm

:15:55. > :16:03.happy now because I have new power steering and I can get the best out

:16:03. > :16:08.of it. In 2004 I was so proud, you're on pole position, you won

:16:08. > :16:14.the race at Monaco. I thought you were world champion in the making.

:16:14. > :16:17.Then you came a couple of years ago with a fresh new start. You must be

:16:17. > :16:23.disappointed that these new teams cannot move forward. I think we

:16:23. > :16:29.have to take into account that this is a brand new team and the set up

:16:29. > :16:36.takes some time. Unlock the first one trying to grab the top of the

:16:36. > :16:43.field and then eventually dropped down because something goes wrong.

:16:43. > :16:46.We all know what happened to my former team. But I'm still enjoying

:16:47. > :16:52.driving and enjoying the challenge with my team-mate and with everyone

:16:52. > :16:57.else around me. So Jarno Trulli falls out in the first part of

:16:57. > :17:03.qualifying. What will happen in the second round of qualifying? Time to

:17:03. > :17:10.find out. We are now into the second part of

:17:10. > :17:20.qualifying. 15 minutes to find out who can make it through to the top

:17:20. > :17:21.

:17:21. > :17:31.10 shoot out. I think everyone was safely going through in the first

:17:31. > :17:36.part on the softer tyres. I'm looking forward to getting a bit

:17:36. > :17:41.more into the different strategies that the teams are running. I

:17:41. > :17:50.suspect some of the top teams may feel vulnerable and want to run an

:17:50. > :17:54.option to get them through into the top 10. Being at the sharp end of

:17:55. > :17:59.the great, and Red Bull have never been on the front row here, there

:17:59. > :18:06.has been more winners from the front of the grid here than Monaco,

:18:06. > :18:11.for example. Grid position here means Europcar is beautifully set

:18:11. > :18:17.up and you cannot drive around problems if you set up is not

:18:17. > :18:22.working. Yes it is about the driver building up momentum and speed and

:18:22. > :18:26.confidence, more like old stop racing. We knew right after

:18:26. > :18:32.breaking his own at that speed, the scenery is passing extremely

:18:32. > :18:36.quickly. If you're not confident, if you blink, you miss your

:18:36. > :18:46.breaking point. Qualifying is one way of getting yourself into the

:18:46. > :18:50.

:18:50. > :18:57.zone. Because it will be a very different story tomorrow. Let's

:18:57. > :19:01.hear what Ted Kravitz has got to say. You asked about Timo Glock. He

:19:01. > :19:11.said that the real wing opened but then it would not shut when he

:19:11. > :19:16.

:19:16. > :19:21.wanted it to. What struck me about the front runners, in the end of

:19:21. > :19:25.that first qualifying session, it was how slow Sebastian Vettel was

:19:25. > :19:30.in the first sector but then the quickest in second and the third.

:19:30. > :19:35.The engineers suspect he might be running a shorter career ratio than

:19:35. > :19:41.Mark Webber. And that is helping him in the slower corners. He is

:19:41. > :19:46.getting out of corners quicker but then he is not as fast as Mark

:19:46. > :19:56.Webber on the straights. How much to think that will affect him in

:19:56. > :19:58.

:19:58. > :20:03.the final reckoning? Well as of last night you have to choose your

:20:03. > :20:13.gear ratio. And never has it been more difficult a would imagine than

:20:13. > :20:18.

:20:18. > :20:22.here. That is such a difficult choice. In qualifying you can open

:20:22. > :20:32.the di Resta at will and make full advantage of that reduction and

:20:32. > :20:43.

:20:43. > :20:53.But without it it is like towing a caravan. So it may be that

:20:53. > :20:55.

:20:55. > :21:05.Sebastian Vettel has got himself fixated with the set up. It is all

:21:05. > :21:09.

:21:09. > :21:14.about delivering the lap when it counts. Bruno Senna at the first to

:21:14. > :21:20.deliver her really high flying lap in the second round of qualifying.

:21:20. > :21:26.They have millions of pounds worth of simulators. I wonder why they

:21:26. > :21:31.have different solutions for the gear ratio. When you have

:21:31. > :21:40.simulation but it is all about reality. Next weekend in the same

:21:40. > :21:45.place you would get to French results. It changes day-to-day. --

:21:45. > :21:54.you would get different results. It you would get different results. It

:21:54. > :22:01.is all about the fine-tuning on the day. So it is jam today in

:22:01. > :22:05.qualifying for a jam tomorrow in the race. That would be the choice!

:22:05. > :22:15.I would go for race strategy because that is where you get the

:31:12. > :31:18.another calm lap. Hamilton is in 8th place, but we know he is now on

:31:18. > :31:26.the softer tyres. Here comes Lewis Hamilton, he goes bird with that

:31:35. > :31:41.Kobayashi stays in 17th place. The chequered flag has not gone out yet

:31:57. > :32:06.If he stays 10th place, does not improve on his lap time, but now he

:32:06. > :32:11.has got a lookout for Perez and Maldonado. Bruno Senna could be his

:32:54. > :32:56.

:32:56. > :33:00.to watch at the moment. Kobayashi can't go any faster, stays in 17th.

:33:00. > :33:08.It is Bruno Senna now, as he crosses the line and goes 10th

:33:19. > :33:24.There he is, he is about to get the message that he will take no

:33:24. > :33:31.further part in qualifying. You can start the race on any tyres you

:33:31. > :33:41.like, but he has missed the cut. The only salvation for him was that

:33:45. > :33:51.he once again about qualifies Adrian Sutil. -- out qualifies.

:33:51. > :33:55.Engineer would have told him it is this La or not at all and he has

:34:05. > :34:21.

:34:21. > :34:31.disappointed with 15th place. Kobayashi will start 17th. And Paul

:34:31. > :34:32.

:34:42. > :34:47.

:34:57. > :34:58.

:34:58. > :35:02.is, you almost got that information before the racing driver! He beat

:35:03. > :35:08.his team-mate, that is the priority for him at this stage, but actually

:35:08. > :35:13.now he can pick whatever tyres he likes. The strategy is in his

:35:13. > :35:16.favour. I would prefer to be in 11th place, rather than a 10th or

:35:16. > :35:21.9th, because it makes so much difference having that choice

:35:21. > :35:26.before the race. He will make it through to the final part of

:35:26. > :35:33.qualifying and we will talk about that in a moment because there was

:35:33. > :35:39.just four tenths between the top six guys in that session. There is

:35:39. > :35:42.plenty of talk about DRS and high- speed, and we think Timo Glock was

:35:42. > :35:49.concerned his wing was sticking open and that would be a big

:35:49. > :35:53.concern, Eddie? Of course it would be and I think that is the case.

:35:53. > :35:57.You think you have downforce but you haven't so you are putting a

:35:57. > :36:02.car into a situation where you think you have it, so the car

:36:02. > :36:09.becomes virtually undrivable. Timo Glock had a shocker of a qualifying

:36:09. > :36:14.session through no fault of his own. Here he is, having a look at the

:36:14. > :36:17.wing himself. Let's have a word with him.

:36:17. > :36:22.21st start place tomorrow but what did you work out about your rear

:36:22. > :36:27.wing because it looked like a scary moment you had this morning. Yes, I

:36:27. > :36:33.had a problem this morning with the rear wing. It lapped up but didn't

:36:33. > :36:38.come down any more. For some reason we have never had this problem, we

:36:38. > :36:44.never had it on Friday and it is not really comfortable if you brake

:36:44. > :36:49.into turn one with a broken rear wing. It was very difficult and

:36:49. > :36:53.disappointing because we were close to Kovalainen, and I think with the

:36:53. > :36:58.rear wing working with the DRS function, we could have been close

:36:58. > :37:02.to them. At least I was in front of my team-mate, which was a surprise

:37:02. > :37:07.for may because the car was difficult to drive in these

:37:07. > :37:17.circumstances. Consider in the circumstances, that was a great lap.

:37:17. > :37:18.

:37:18. > :37:28.And this man, Daniel Ricky Adair will be with him, and you have also

:37:28. > :37:30.

:37:30. > :37:37.out qualified your team-mate. you. I will try to do it more

:37:37. > :37:45.consistently now but it is good. What I am concerned with is where

:37:45. > :37:52.do you find that? How do you find such a big gap as one second?

:37:52. > :37:56.Spa, that was probably more down to me not doing a good qualifying

:37:56. > :38:03.performance. I was still slow were in those circumstances but it was

:38:03. > :38:07.probably not maybe the second 1/2 as it seemed. We didn't have the

:38:07. > :38:12.smoothest run up into qualifying either. Also this morning we didn't

:38:12. > :38:17.get to do a qualifying simulation so I just sort of went for it and

:38:17. > :38:22.managed to put it all together. Sometimes it just happens, I don't

:38:23. > :38:28.know. I will try to make it happen more often. Enjoy the moment.

:38:28. > :38:32.Indeed, congratulations. Daniel made it out in the first part of

:38:32. > :38:37.qualifying, but let's turn our attention to the chase for pole

:38:37. > :38:42.position. So tight at the front, who do you think can do it today?

:38:42. > :38:48.have this great feeling about Lewis will start when he has all the

:38:48. > :38:52.controversy and people on his back, he always seems to pull it out of

:38:52. > :38:55.the bag and prove people wrong, me included. I just think he can pull

:38:55. > :39:00.included. I just think he can pull it out here. So Lewis Hamilton in

:39:00. > :39:07.the face of adversity or Sebastian Vettel to do what he does. What do

:39:07. > :39:11.we think in the commentary box? Sebastian Vettel takes this, he

:39:11. > :39:16.will be the first man to take 10 pole positions in two different

:39:16. > :39:24.Formula One seasons since Ayrton Senna. That is how fast the young

:39:24. > :39:34.German is, but what do you think, David? Has he got pole position in

:39:34. > :39:38.

:39:38. > :39:43.the back? In his mind's eye I that is what you see now. This is down

:39:43. > :39:52.to the strategy I was talking about earlier, who is using the right

:39:52. > :39:55.strategy for qualifying? We will strategy for qualifying? We will

:39:55. > :40:00.have 10 minutes of qualifying three. Qualifying three starts right now.

:40:00. > :40:04.As you can see, a long queue at the end of the pit lane. They are keen

:40:04. > :40:08.to get out there, they love this track. They don't have the trouble

:40:09. > :40:14.of the issue with traffic, there will only be 10 cars out there.

:40:14. > :40:18.They have just under 10 minutes to do it. You can see one of the

:40:18. > :40:25.Ferraris coming out, they have obviously been told to get out

:40:25. > :40:35.there and give the Italian fans the show. Is visiting strategy to help

:40:35. > :40:39.tow each other around? Indianapolis has one of the longest flat out

:40:39. > :40:43.sections of any circuit, and we would go out and finish the lab and

:40:43. > :40:48.give the slipstream at the next of the lap to your team mate. We heard

:40:48. > :40:54.them saying that Lewis Hamilton ended up giving Bruno Senna or a

:40:54. > :41:00.tow into the top 10 shoot-out, obviously not intentionally. We can

:41:00. > :41:06.see the Ferrari hierarchy looking on. It is odd to send your cars out

:41:06. > :41:09.like that because, if one spins out, it affects both of them. How hard

:41:09. > :41:14.was it to co-ordinate because I found it virtually impossible over

:41:14. > :41:20.the years. It is so difficult to get it right. It is all about the

:41:20. > :41:24.car in front. If he doesn't want to play ball, it will not work, but

:41:24. > :41:31.let's see what will happen. If they co-ordinate this correctly, it

:41:31. > :41:36.would give a big advantage to Fernando Alonso. Even with the DRS,

:41:36. > :41:42.with the KERS, if you are running in the air of the car in front, it

:41:42. > :41:50.gives you less resistance. I can't understand why Felipe Massa would

:41:50. > :41:55.give a jot about giving his team mate the toe. Sadly we can't see it

:41:55. > :42:05.but they have just passed me in the straight and Felipe Massa is

:42:05. > :42:08.

:42:08. > :42:13.turbulent there's a phone to me. went into Ferrari and asked because

:42:13. > :42:17.they did practise that so thing in third practice and it worked for

:42:17. > :42:22.them then so we will see if they do it at the end of the lab. Fernando

:42:22. > :42:32.said we are not expecting anything more than a 5th, for no other

:42:32. > :42:35.

:42:35. > :42:40.reason than what has affected us all season - not enough downforce.

:42:40. > :42:45.Felipe Massa is giving it full beam through these corners so he looks

:42:45. > :42:52.like he is searching for a lap time instantly. Of course, but that is

:42:53. > :42:58.close enough to make a difference. Fernando Alonso has the benefit of

:42:58. > :43:06.a distant Tote and all of the Straits as well as his DRS. I will

:43:06. > :43:10.be amazed if he is not quicker than Felipe Massa on this lap. Alonso

:43:10. > :43:20.was penalised in the past, it was perceived as blocking him and

:43:20. > :43:28.

:43:28. > :43:33.that time by Felipe Massa. Button looks like he will be the third man

:43:33. > :43:41.to put a time in, then he will be followed by Sebastian Vettel and

:43:41. > :43:51.Hamilton. As we look urgently back towards Sebastian Vettel, here he

:43:51. > :43:51.

:43:51. > :43:59.is. What can Hamilton do about that? It is second at the moment,

:43:59. > :44:04.so close to Jenson Button. Red Bull, McLaren, McLaren, Ferrari. We have

:44:04. > :44:14.not seen what Mark Webber can do yet. Is he still in the pits? Some

:44:14. > :44:21.

:44:21. > :44:31.of the men going for one run, would going to have one flying lap.

:44:31. > :44:33.

:44:33. > :44:40.attempt. Mark Webber is still in the pits. That is the engine thing

:44:40. > :44:50.again. Mark Webber has an older engine than everyone else. I will

:44:50. > :44:56.

:44:56. > :45:04.ask them about that after the session. Sebastian Vettel on the

:45:04. > :45:13.absolute edge of the grid through that chicane. He has done a mighty

:45:14. > :45:23.middle section as well. He made a mistake with a massive amount of

:45:24. > :45:25.

:45:25. > :45:30.oversteer. That has cost him some time. Here we go. He just left

:45:30. > :45:37.nothing. We joined him in the middle of that corner when we were

:45:37. > :45:44.on board with him and it was terrifying. He is still the fastest

:45:44. > :45:50.middle sector of anyone in qualifying. Absolutely amazing.

:45:50. > :45:58.Then in the final corner he just asked a bit too much. Well done to

:45:58. > :46:04.the cameraman for capturing that. And Sebastian Vettel has had a slow

:46:04. > :46:14.first sector. Do you think that has cost him pole position? It could

:46:14. > :46:23.have done. Putting on another set of tyres. Nico Rosberg then comes

:46:23. > :46:33.over the line. Only in 7th place. He is on Bahadur set of tyres as

:46:33. > :46:44.

:46:44. > :46:54.well. -- harder. We need to manage that KERS temperature. Eating some

:46:54. > :46:56.

:46:56. > :47:06.cooling air into those batteries. - on with driving these cars flash

:47:06. > :47:09.

:47:09. > :47:16.out. -- flat out. I come back to the point that degradation, it is

:47:16. > :47:23.less important here surely than on other tracks to save your tyres.

:47:23. > :47:33.Historically you used to do one stop here. You just got faster and

:47:33. > :47:39.

:47:39. > :47:49.faster as the fuel burnt off. But it has changed now. Rosberg still

:47:49. > :47:49.

:47:49. > :47:59.going but on those harder tyres. Wherever it finishes that lap in a

:47:59. > :48:09.fit place. -- Mark Webber. And Sebastian Vettel comes back out

:48:09. > :48:12.

:48:12. > :48:19.with two minutes remaining. He has got Bruno cellar in front of him.

:48:19. > :48:25.In fact, it loads of cars in front of him. Sebastian Vettel will be

:48:25. > :48:34.the last one to set a quick lap. Ferrari have sent both drivers out

:48:34. > :48:44.together. So Sebastian Vettel under pressure now after that error. He

:48:44. > :48:45.

:48:45. > :48:55.is at the back of a queue there. Try to time yourself to the cars in

:48:55. > :48:59.

:48:59. > :49:03.front, it might give you a tow. This is so frustrating. Jensen

:49:03. > :49:10.Button they're getting out of the way of Mark Webber - when you're

:49:11. > :49:18.trying to get yourself Wilde up in two-lap, and there is someone in

:49:18. > :49:28.the way. Sebastian Vettel is at the back of that you. The only man not

:49:28. > :49:29.

:49:29. > :49:35.in it is Nico Rosberg, out by himself. Hamilton is that the front.

:49:35. > :49:41.And the problems that Sebastian Vettel has come up he has backed

:49:41. > :49:49.off to give himself some space. He crosses the line it with about 15

:49:49. > :49:58.seconds to go. Mercedes have been mighty on his lap. It is all to

:49:59. > :50:08.play for at the moment. Nine cries out on track. Lewis Hamilton I

:50:09. > :50:09.

:50:09. > :50:16.think has gone too deep into the second chicane. He will then be

:50:16. > :50:26.backing up Michael Schumacher who was right behind him. Here is Mark

:50:26. > :50:30.

:50:30. > :50:35.Webber followed by Jensen Button. And there is a queue. Michael

:50:35. > :50:42.Schumacher has passed Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton has

:50:43. > :50:50.effectively had to give up on this lap. We watch Mark Webber go over

:50:50. > :50:54.the line. 4th place for Mark Webber. Jensen Button just behind him.

:50:54. > :51:04.Michael Schumacher or crosses the line and go as servants. Jensen

:51:04. > :51:11.Button has pitted, that is why we did not see him. Sebastian Vettel

:51:11. > :51:16.is over the line. Despite all of the problems. He was at the back of

:51:16. > :51:24.the queue, the last man to get a shot at pole position, and he has

:51:24. > :51:33.done it by half a second. It was Hamilton who made a mistake. Mark

:51:33. > :51:43.Webber just was not fast enough in its 5th place. Pole position, how

:51:43. > :51:53.about that! Yes! That is what we are talking about. They cannot stop

:51:53. > :51:59.

:51:59. > :52:09.him. His Christmas has come early. Let's just talk about that lap.

:52:09. > :52:17.This is where Lewis Hamilton makes a mistake. Just a little white

:52:18. > :52:27.through the exit. -- wide. That pretty much backed up Schumacher or

:52:28. > :52:41.

:52:41. > :52:50.as well. Let's just talk about that lap. Over steering all over the

:52:50. > :52:57.place. Then he has won flying lap left and he is on pole by one

:52:57. > :53:04.second. The mentality of going back out with a car that has almost spat

:53:04. > :53:09.you off the race track. He could just his differential, who knows

:53:09. > :53:14.what he did. But half a second faster than it Lewis Hamilton and

:53:14. > :53:21.Jensen Button. A remarkable qualifying performance. Let's take

:53:21. > :53:30.a look at this light that he had. We saw him fighting the Red Bull.

:53:30. > :53:40.Then in the middle of that she came, jockeying for back around. -- the

:53:40. > :53:52.

:53:52. > :54:02.chicane. 340 kilometres an hour into that first chicane. It did not

:54:02. > :54:13.

:54:13. > :54:22.affect his exit. Under the bridge. Then pulls the car back a cross. It

:54:22. > :54:32.is difficult to get the site there because of the trees. Then sweet as

:54:32. > :54:50.

:54:50. > :54:57.you like On The Run out through get it wrong now. Touches the white

:54:58. > :55:05.line and then it hard on the power. And the shortest line to the

:55:05. > :55:14.chequered flag. And an incredible pole position. The 20th pole

:55:14. > :55:22.position of his relatively sharp -- George Formula 1 career. And he is

:55:22. > :55:31.the man in Monza. And this is not a circuit where Red Bull have ever

:55:31. > :55:41.ring want a race. But the start from the front tomorrow. And the

:55:41. > :55:48.

:55:48. > :55:54.two Ferrari drivers there. Giving themselves up tow around. There

:55:54. > :55:58.aren't down sides to that slip streaming mechanism. You get

:55:58. > :56:03.nothing for nothing in this world. You have to fight for it and I do

:56:03. > :56:12.not see why this would be an advantage. In the end Ferrari did

:56:12. > :56:19.not come into play too much. Let's take a look at that slip behind the

:56:19. > :56:29.wheel from Lewis Hamilton. And here is Christian Horner, the man at the

:56:29. > :56:31.

:56:31. > :56:36.head of the team. Well done. Yes, he was really showing a massive

:56:36. > :56:42.margin. This has not been a good circuit for asked to get pole

:56:42. > :56:46.position here is beyond our expectations. It was a quick

:56:46. > :56:55.turnaround after that mistake in the first part. We needed to

:56:55. > :57:01.complete the lap and it was an unbelievable job by him. Why did

:57:01. > :57:06.Mark Webber only took one of run? Are you saving the engine?

:57:06. > :57:12.wanted to do that after the first round of qualifying. It is

:57:12. > :57:19.something he wanted to do. With hindsight he would have been better

:57:19. > :57:23.to do two laps. But we decided to go with it. Well done indeed. That

:57:23. > :57:32.is the inside story of how Red Bull managed to get themselves poll

:57:33. > :57:38.position. It is the magnitude. Half the second a round here is unheard

:57:38. > :57:43.of. And when you have that talent behind him. I think the mistake

:57:43. > :57:50.that Lewis Hamilton made cost him. Because traditionally Jensen it is

:57:50. > :57:56.the racer but Lewis Hamilton is quicker than him. So I am surprised

:57:56. > :58:01.that Lewis Hamilton is not close at two Sebastian Vettel. This was a

:58:02. > :58:07.very big margin that Red Bull have pulled off. And Lewis Hamilton,

:58:07. > :58:17.just giving you a tiny glimpse into how tight the margins are up in

:58:17. > :58:19.

:58:19. > :58:24.Formula 1. One mistake and it is blown. It was an interesting

:58:24. > :58:29.qualifying for you today. It looked like you're doing the minimum at

:58:29. > :58:39.some stages. Were you saying the engine? We were just trying to

:58:39. > :58:43.

:58:43. > :58:53.manage some KERS stuff. I made it difficult for the team because I

:58:53. > :58:53.

:58:53. > :59:00.had not planned exactly what I wanted to do. I did not choose the

:59:00. > :59:06.best programmes so I apologise to the engineers. But we can still

:59:06. > :59:16.raise from there. Week under performed today but we will come

:59:16. > :59:18.

:59:18. > :59:23.back tomorrow. Is KERS working for you? It was intermittent on the

:59:23. > :59:29.last run but it should be OK tomorrow. And am rather crestfallen

:59:30. > :59:36.Mark Webber after qualifying not for the first time this season.

:59:36. > :59:42.Paul di Resta is with us now. How are you feeling after the second

:59:42. > :59:49.part of qualifying? I would not say frustrated, I would say unfortunate.

:59:49. > :59:59.You're looking for the slipstream and that is difficult to find the

:59:59. > :59:59.

:59:59. > :00:03.faster car. We did a good lap. I think Bruno Senna got a little

:00:03. > :00:12.slipstream of Lewis Hamilton. But we're perhaps in a stronger

:00:12. > :00:19.position tomorrow with the new tyres. Exactly what I ate was

:00:19. > :00:29.saying. This gives you a better chance for the race having the

:00:29. > :00:31.

:00:31. > :00:37.ability to choose the tyres and the a different choice on tyres, and it

:00:37. > :00:47.will be close this weekend. And you are in front of your team-mates,

:00:47. > :00:47.

:00:47. > :00:52.which always puts a smile on a driver's phase. Yes, and our change

:00:52. > :00:55.improved our lap performance so it was a win-win situation. The ingots

:00:55. > :01:00.crossed for you tomorrow. Let's crossed for you tomorrow. Let's

:01:00. > :01:05.hear from the men starting at the very front. It is time for the

:01:05. > :01:11.drivers' press conference. It looked like it might be a little

:01:11. > :01:15.close. We thought it would be much closer than that. It is why I had a

:01:15. > :01:23.good improvement already in the first run for my second lap. We

:01:23. > :01:27.were not sure if the tyres worked best in the first or second lap,

:01:27. > :01:33.but I made a mistake and stayed out, and focused only on the last run we

:01:33. > :01:39.had. The last lap I did on my own, without anybody. On the second run

:01:39. > :01:46.I had a few cars ahead down the road, which always helps in Monza,

:01:46. > :01:54.but we would not expect or think of going on pole position by that big

:01:54. > :02:02.margin. This track did not suit us for the last few years, to be fair,

:02:02. > :02:08.but the balance is perfect for this car. We don't carry a lot of

:02:08. > :02:11.weighing around and on downforce it is slippery but we are quite quick

:02:12. > :02:16.in all other sectors and I was able to put it together so I am very

:02:16. > :02:21.happy today, also considering that I think we have quite a racy

:02:21. > :02:26.approach so I am pleased with today. Lewis, the final run didn't work

:02:26. > :02:32.out for you after it had seemed close until then. Is this the one

:02:32. > :02:37.that got away today? And I don't think so. I think perhaps we could

:02:37. > :02:43.have got another couple of tenths out of the car, but firstly the

:02:43. > :02:48.guys did a fantastic job and clearly we are very competitive.

:02:48. > :02:57.Both me and Jenson Button are able to be up here, so there is a good

:02:57. > :03:02.step, but today in that last lap that was untouchable for me. Jensen,

:03:02. > :03:07.a strong result here last year. How do you see tomorrow's race shaping

:03:07. > :03:12.up? Third is normally a pretty good place to start but here you can't

:03:12. > :03:19.get past the front two so it is tricky. Looking at today, I totally

:03:19. > :03:23.agree with Lewis. Even if we got a bit out of the car, we are never

:03:23. > :03:30.going to challenge Sebastian. The strange thing is these guys don't

:03:30. > :03:38.look like they are carrying a lot of wing but they are half the

:03:38. > :03:43.second quicker than us on the corner. We have to concentrate on

:03:43. > :03:47.tomorrow now and look forward to a good race. We are both in great

:03:47. > :03:50.positions and we can score some good points here. It is not so

:03:50. > :03:55.important here to be on pole position like in previous

:03:55. > :04:03.competitions because you have DRS, so we will see. We will certainly

:04:03. > :04:13.see about that. The pole position man has won here on more occasions

:04:13. > :04:13.

:04:13. > :04:57.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds

:04:57. > :05:01.the new teams, Team Lotus. They round off the back of the grid, so

:05:01. > :05:04.that is how things are set up for the race tomorrow. Congratulations

:05:04. > :05:09.to Michael Schumacher, he knows what it takes to be quicker than

:05:09. > :05:18.Nico Rosberg and how to win round here. There are dislike autumn for

:05:18. > :05:23.him in his life. He has found himself a new reinvigorated man.

:05:23. > :05:28.Since Canada he has grown and grown, and beating Rosberg is not be

:05:28. > :05:33.forgotten about, that is a milestone for him. He has enjoyed

:05:33. > :05:35.the last few months of his racing, let's hope he can continue.

:05:35. > :05:38.Fernando Alonso has struggled and Fernando Alonso has struggled and

:05:38. > :05:45.qualifying up against Felipe Massa for the last few races, however,

:05:45. > :05:51.today he was in front of his team- mate. Let's hear from him. How do

:05:51. > :05:55.you feel? It is good, obviously we didn't find the right balance or

:05:55. > :06:00.the right speed all weekend. Yesterday we struggled with the

:06:00. > :06:07.balance of the card, and the top speed today, we are still lacking a

:06:07. > :06:11.bit of braking stability. We are never happy with the balance and

:06:11. > :06:15.that is the negative of the weekend so far because we are not totally

:06:15. > :06:19.confident in the car, but the positive thing is the result. In

:06:19. > :06:24.4th place it opens a big possibility for tomorrow because at

:06:24. > :06:27.the start you are in a very good position. You will be fighting in

:06:27. > :06:31.the first places for the first couple of laps so it opens a big

:06:31. > :06:37.possibility of the podium tomorrow, which, regarding how the weekend

:06:37. > :06:42.went so far, it is very good news. Your team-mate was giving you a tow,

:06:42. > :06:50.was that a strategy for qualifying today? We know how important the

:06:50. > :06:54.slipstream is in Monza so we both tried to find someone always. Both

:06:54. > :07:02.cars were slowing down, trying to let someone passed in the other lot

:07:02. > :07:12.so it was a nice game. It was good, and I think everyone gets the tone

:07:12. > :07:25.

:07:25. > :07:32.at the end of Q3, apart from the Grand Prix on BBC One. Tomorrow we

:07:32. > :07:42.will be talking about how to race and show and you how not to. Good

:07:42. > :07:50.

:07:50. > :07:54.Do you feel at the moment you are emerging as a team leader? A I'm

:07:54. > :07:59.sure Lewis would say he is the team leader but I would say it I am. We

:07:59. > :08:04.are both working as hard as we can in the same direction but it is
