:01:30. > :01:36.Ascot. Lords and golf. And British racing green. There is no
:01:36. > :01:44.strawberries at Silverstone, no sound of rippled applause. Here,
:01:44. > :01:54.you get the perfume of petrol. You cover your ears against the shriek
:01:54. > :01:55.
:01:55. > :02:00.of speed. To be heard you have to roar as a choir 300,000 strong.
:02:00. > :02:07.What you see sheikhs through the shimmer of fumes, an inferno of
:02:07. > :02:13.heat or through a spray of heaven opening. This is the bowler of
:02:13. > :02:19.sport in the mysteries of the British summer. On this stage,
:02:19. > :02:27.humans drive the drama. But near by, like a satellite of science and
:02:27. > :02:37.innovation. Cottage industries of the space age, were the cars are
:02:37. > :02:38.
:02:38. > :02:45.King. This is an ancient land of modern machines. This is the
:02:45. > :02:55.countryside where the wheel spins at 18,000 revolutions a minute. In
:02:55. > :02:56.
:02:56. > :03:01.the Racing Green Heart of England, this is Formula One.
:03:01. > :03:04.And this is the birthplace of Formula One, Silverstone. I don't
:03:04. > :03:09.think John Hurt could have some of the passion and emotion of this
:03:09. > :03:14.weekend any better. And for the best Formula One fans in the world,
:03:14. > :03:18.let's hope the sport can live up to its side of the bargain. Alongside
:03:18. > :03:23.me his David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan. Eddie, it is a shame when
:03:24. > :03:28.we come to what we believe is the best race in the calendar, the
:03:28. > :03:33.headlines have been dominated by the campsites and car parks around.
:03:33. > :03:39.It is a shame? The real shame is, the drivers and the teams did not
:03:39. > :03:45.go out on the track as often as they should have. The fans were
:03:45. > :03:50.cheated. Rain is coming so I don't know what they will expect. Be it
:03:50. > :03:56.was raining a couple of days ago, but as we can see from these
:03:56. > :04:01.pictures, it takes more than a bit of rain to put off the fans? In it
:04:01. > :04:06.does, these are hardcore fans. They are educated and have a great deal
:04:06. > :04:11.of knowledge of the sport. Eight of the teams in Formula One are based
:04:11. > :04:15.in the UK, but they support those who are not. I hope they have a
:04:15. > :04:19.greater weekend. A we will make this show extra-special for those
:04:19. > :04:25.extra thousands of fans who were told they cannot come here. We are
:04:25. > :04:30.thinking of you. Here is a man who can hopefully answer some questions,
:04:30. > :04:35.Richard Phillips, managing director of the circuit. I know it has been
:04:35. > :04:38.tough at the circuit, but it has been tougher for the fans. After
:04:38. > :04:44.such wet weather, most people are complaining the circuit was taken
:04:44. > :04:50.by surprise this weekend, is that fair? To an extent, I guess. We did
:04:50. > :04:54.have an unprecedented amount of rainfall. On Thursday, the car
:04:54. > :04:59.parks were sound and we did have provision for extra camping. But we
:04:59. > :05:03.had a double whammy. We had rain, come sides were close down and
:05:03. > :05:10.campers had no where to go and they were circulating and stopping in
:05:10. > :05:16.our traffic. To stop them on a grass car park was not my intention.
:05:16. > :05:20.It caused the issue where we are today. Hopefully, it is unfortunate
:05:20. > :05:23.to have to turn people away but at least we have a fighting chance for
:05:23. > :05:28.tomorrow and a lot of people are here. In the year 2000 the race was
:05:28. > :05:32.a bit earlier in the year and you had similar problems. The Dean not
:05:32. > :05:37.think then you would need hardstanding available, having
:05:37. > :05:42.things available in case they were needed? Park-and-ride is difficult
:05:42. > :05:47.on a Friday because the parking is used for commercial use. Coaches
:05:47. > :05:52.are in use as well. Today we have got it, and Samarra is an even
:05:52. > :05:58.bigger one. It is difficult, and to cover 800 acres in Tarmac or pack -
:05:58. > :06:03.- plastic is not practical. The water was coming out of the drains
:06:04. > :06:07.rather than going down it. It is difficult to tell 20,000 people not
:06:07. > :06:13.to come today, when will the decision be made about what they
:06:13. > :06:17.should do tomorrow? We will make an announcement early in the afternoon.
:06:17. > :06:22.A hard weekend, I am sure your staff will continue to work hard.
:06:22. > :06:27.The fans are working hard as well. We have said they are the best fans
:06:27. > :06:32.in the weekend, but it is not just Formula One fans, whether it is
:06:32. > :06:42.waiting in the rain for the Olympic torch, or on the remount, it is a
:06:42. > :06:56.
:06:56. > :07:02.great British sporting summer. -- I love the Wellington boots, and I
:07:02. > :07:06.love the T-shirts. Are you all OK despite the rain? It is rare we
:07:06. > :07:11.come to a racetrack and on a Thursday that there are thousands
:07:11. > :07:17.of people. And even in the rain in Friday practice, they packed out
:07:17. > :07:26.the grandstand. We must be very truthful. And their arms and no
:07:26. > :07:31.better fans in the universe than we get at Silverstone. People take
:07:31. > :07:37.their holidays, they come camping. Instead of going off to Europe,
:07:37. > :07:40.they come to Silverstone. Let's hope they continue to do so. If we
:07:40. > :07:46.look at the calendar, it is hard to pick out a race that has not
:07:46. > :07:51.disappointed. Silverstone has its work to do. It has, but I don't
:07:51. > :07:57.think it will disappoint. It invites great racing, we have
:07:57. > :08:01.changeable conditions. It is the worst nightmare for the drivers in
:08:01. > :08:06.his build-up to qualifying. We have spoken to a few of the teams who
:08:06. > :08:10.are saying they don't know how to set the cars of. We have had dry
:08:10. > :08:16.running and works running. At the moment the rain is starting to come
:08:16. > :08:26.down. We should get our jackets on, but let's hope so Alveston can live
:08:26. > :08:28.
:08:28. > :08:38.up to Valencia. -- Silverstone. Lights out and away
:08:38. > :08:53.
:08:53. > :08:58.we go. Raikkonen gets past Grosjean. past Maldonado. Problems again in
:08:58. > :09:06.the pits for Hamilton. For front jack fell away. Alonso gets past
:09:06. > :09:16.him. The here comes a Alonso trying to get past Grosjean for second
:09:16. > :09:16.
:09:16. > :09:24.place. The he is through! Fernando Alonso is in second place. Hamilton
:09:24. > :09:34.has managed to get past the locus. Vettel has a problem. That will be
:09:34. > :09:39.in trouble and Alonso Leeds. The -- Vettel. Grosjean in trouble.
:09:39. > :09:46.Hamilton is in second. Kimi Raikkonen in the Lotus has gone
:09:46. > :09:52.into second. It is that the McLaren that has run out of grip. Hamilton
:09:52. > :09:57.breaks early and Maldonado tries to go around the outside of him.
:09:57. > :10:06.Hamilton is in the wall. This will allow Michael Schumacher to take
:10:06. > :10:12.third place. Fernando Alonso is the first repeater winner of 2012. The
:10:12. > :10:16.first time he has won in Valencia. A fantastic ride from Fernando
:10:16. > :10:21.Alonso, a tough weekend for Jenson Button. Preparation being put into
:10:21. > :10:25.his car to make sure when he heads out the qualifying he can deliver
:10:25. > :10:33.something special. But something that was picked up after the last
:10:33. > :10:38.race I want to share with you, form is temporary, class is permanent.
:10:38. > :10:43.This is the podium seven years before that Grand Prix. Do you
:10:43. > :10:48.recognise the faces? No big surprise, they are all world
:10:48. > :10:53.champions and great drivers. Class is permanent. Nick Turner
:10:53. > :10:58.Championship title standing on that podium in Valencia. Probably the
:10:58. > :11:03.happiest man, probably even more than Fernando Alonso was Michael
:11:03. > :11:13.Schumacher. He was on the podium for the first time in a long time.
:11:13. > :11:17.Eddie is with him. We hope to get them in a moment.
:11:17. > :11:23.Michael, you have been striving for the podium for the last number of
:11:23. > :11:29.seasons. How exciting was it for you and the team, the result?
:11:29. > :11:36.was a beautiful moment. Unexpected. It was an interesting last third of
:11:36. > :11:40.the race, lots of overtaking and action. A message from my engineer
:11:40. > :11:47.that I wasn't aware of. Seeing all four boys happy and finally tasting
:11:47. > :11:52.some champagne, it was very good. We all know the weather here at
:11:52. > :11:58.Silverstone, but we know about the bad times you have had. But also
:11:58. > :12:03.fantastic times, three victories. Can you get another? The weather
:12:03. > :12:08.will be a lottery tomorrow. There is an opportunity, and I hope we
:12:08. > :12:14.grab it. We wish you well. That man is so successful, but has been
:12:14. > :12:18.relatively unsuccessful at this circuit. But that podium puts into
:12:18. > :12:24.13th in the Championship. David, seven points was the biggest lead
:12:24. > :12:29.for anyone going into that race. Alonso now has the 20 point cushion
:12:29. > :12:37.over Mark Webber? You see where Ferrari were when they launch this
:12:37. > :12:42.new car. They knew from suspension. Their comeback has been amazing.
:12:42. > :12:47.Last time out there were problems as far as Red Bull were concerned.
:12:47. > :12:51.Mark Webber had technical issues and Sebastian Vettel retiring from
:12:51. > :12:55.the leader of the race. But Red Bull art in the lead of the
:12:55. > :13:05.Constructors' Championship. There has been many unfortunate headlines
:13:05. > :13:07.
:13:08. > :13:12.off the track, all but what about on the track? Here is Lee McKenzie.
:13:12. > :13:17.With a sell-out crowd, the three British drivers will be hoping they
:13:17. > :13:22.can give the spectators plenty to cheer about. If it is wet, it is
:13:22. > :13:27.just as wet on the track. On Friday it look like a boat might have been
:13:27. > :13:31.easier. Lewis Hamilton has a big weekend with hopefully a good
:13:31. > :13:35.result, followed by carrying the Olympic torch on Monday. I feel
:13:35. > :13:41.honoured to have been asked to carry the torch for such a huge
:13:41. > :13:46.event. Such a great sporting year for England. So to be part of that,
:13:46. > :13:51.I feel very fortunate. Jenson Button has never been on the podium
:13:51. > :13:54.at Silverstone in his 11th British Grand Prix. He is relying on
:13:54. > :13:59.upgrades to help his chances this weekend. You always want more but
:14:00. > :14:04.the guys had done a great job. The way the regulations are, it is
:14:04. > :14:08.restricted in terms of what you can do to the car. We had a lot to play
:14:08. > :14:13.with last year, but this year it is different. If you can bring any
:14:13. > :14:17.upgrades, it is fantastic. Fernando Alonso is still on a high after
:14:17. > :14:22.Valencia. There were smiles and there was crying. But when he
:14:22. > :14:27.watched the race back, it wasn't quite how he remembered it. When
:14:27. > :14:36.you are driving, you don't know exactly how the race is moving and
:14:36. > :14:41.how the situation is at the back. What a Michael and Webber,
:14:41. > :14:45.strategies, you understand in the car, only to concentrate. Stewards
:14:46. > :14:55.were kept busy at the the European Grand Prix which means two drivers
:14:56. > :15:05.
:15:05. > :15:09.carry a penalty. Jean-Eric Vergne carries a $20,000 fine. And Pastor
:15:09. > :15:13.Maldonado escapes any penalties this weekend. So was the more
:15:13. > :15:19.rabbits biggest crowd this weekend with 125,000 people expected on
:15:20. > :15:23.Sunday. Organisers say contingency plans are in place for the rain, so
:15:23. > :15:33.even if the weather disappoint the weather was still be great for the
:15:33. > :15:34.
:15:34. > :15:38.me they are setting the car up for a dry qualifying session. I will
:15:38. > :15:43.not tell them that it is training at the moment. Let's talk about the
:15:43. > :15:47.very unfortunate testing accident for the Spanish driver, involved
:15:47. > :15:52.with the Marussia team. It is fair to say that Formula 1 has been
:15:52. > :15:57.pretty shocked by this. Yes, it was very bird news when we heard about
:15:57. > :16:01.Maria, especially in Spain, for her family, but also for Formula 1.
:16:01. > :16:05.Things like that should not happen. Formula One is very safe, it has
:16:05. > :16:12.gone through the last years with big development. I know Maria very
:16:12. > :16:17.well, I know all her family since the old days, they are running a
:16:17. > :16:24.scholarship for young drivers in Spain. They have always had very
:16:24. > :16:30.good relationships with motor sport. It is a real shame. She is a great
:16:30. > :16:38.person. She was the last person to deserve something like that. It is
:16:38. > :16:43.a real shame, and we hope that she recovers very, very fast. And you
:16:43. > :16:47.can see the star on the wing mirror, and we have seen Lewis Hamilton
:16:47. > :16:51.doing the same thing to his helmet. I know you're in touch with the
:16:51. > :16:58.family, they come from a Spanish racing dynasty - what is the latest
:16:58. > :17:03.news from the hospital? I went to the hospital yesterday, it was the
:17:03. > :17:06.minimum thing I could do for the family. I saw her parents. I do not
:17:06. > :17:13.know much about the situation of Maria, because I'm not sure if
:17:13. > :17:18.anybody knows much, because the she is in special treatment in hospital.
:17:18. > :17:22.I think she has had two operations at the moment, she had one
:17:22. > :17:26.yesterday late afternoon, and I don't know much more than that. She
:17:26. > :17:31.is in a stable condition, a bit critical, but stable, which is
:17:31. > :17:37.always important. I think what we all want is that she recovers and
:17:37. > :17:40.that she is back with us soon. We want her just in one piece. I wish
:17:40. > :17:45.we were talking about happier news, but thank you very much for coming
:17:45. > :17:48.down to speak to us. Jaime Alguersuari will be the co-
:17:49. > :17:53.commentator on Radio 5 Live, as he is for every single Grand Prix. We
:17:53. > :17:58.send our best wishes to the family of Maria, and a huge thank you to
:17:58. > :18:01.the staff at Adam Brookes. A lot of pressure this weekend on the Force
:18:01. > :18:08.India team. They did really well in Valencia, but they have struggled
:18:08. > :18:18.for points so far this season. What they needed was a visit from our
:18:18. > :18:32.
:18:32. > :18:37.British Grand Prix for the foreseeable future. I am going to
:18:37. > :18:44.take you on a walk down memory lane, to visit Force India, the former
:18:44. > :18:51.home of Jordan Grand Prix. So, Paul di Resta, we have finally drag you
:18:51. > :18:55.into this. This used to be my office. I always felt we had an
:18:55. > :18:58.excellent designer. I think if I was your boss now, I would have
:18:58. > :19:03.sold you by now, because you're going to ask for too much money
:19:03. > :19:06.next year, I would not want to pay it to you, and I would find juicy
:19:06. > :19:11.little players like Ferrari or Mercedes to pay me good money for
:19:11. > :19:20.you, and move on to another young star. What you think about that?
:19:20. > :19:23.Gladly, you're not my boss at the moment! If you're going to win a
:19:23. > :19:30.race, do you think you have to move away from Force India to achieve
:19:30. > :19:34.that? At the moment, I am driving a Force India. I never come into a
:19:34. > :19:38.weekend thinking that you should not win a race. Why should I think
:19:38. > :19:42.different? Malaysia showed that you have to believe that anything is
:19:42. > :19:50.possible. Everything we do before the weekend is going to enable us
:19:50. > :19:55.to challenge. Putting the effort in now makes a difference. Could you
:19:55. > :20:01.see yourself winning a race this year? I could see ourselves on the
:20:01. > :20:10.podium, and we would love to win a race. Sauber should have won a race,
:20:10. > :20:20.Williams have one a race, Force India has to have that opportunity.
:20:20. > :20:20.
:20:20. > :20:24.What Department do you work in? Finance. Oh, I love finance. We
:20:24. > :20:28.used to have options... I cannot imagine the kind of comments that
:20:28. > :20:38.you will be getting on our show this weekend. You have got very
:20:38. > :20:39.
:20:39. > :20:43.cocky in your old age. 18 months ago, he would be afraid to say boo,
:20:43. > :20:47.but now look at him. Just because he has got a few points in the back.
:20:47. > :20:52.I know the story. The first Jordan car was designed by just three
:20:52. > :20:56.people, and here is one of those three people. What has changed, why
:20:56. > :21:03.do you need all these people? And thinking about the money. Because,
:21:03. > :21:07.as you say, things have technically evolved. In 1991, we designed a
:21:07. > :21:12.glorified Formula 3,000 car. That is where the technology was in
:21:12. > :21:17.those days. Now, we are light years ahead. I would have sacked 90% of
:21:17. > :21:27.the whole lot of you. You are all superfluous, you are not needed,
:21:27. > :21:27.
:21:27. > :21:37.and we would have done it with 10% of the people chasing -- 10% of the
:21:37. > :21:37.
:21:37. > :21:47.people! A wonderful walk down memory lane for Eddie Jordan. Paul
:21:47. > :21:51.
:21:51. > :22:01.di Resta it is with us now. I have got absolutely no idea what you
:22:01. > :22:01.
:22:01. > :22:07.guys are saying, with all of this noise. A lot of people have been
:22:07. > :22:12.told not to turn up, obviously, but many of them are here to support us.
:22:12. > :22:17.We know that you had issues yesterday in free practice, and
:22:17. > :22:22.today I think they told you that your KERS was broken on the car.
:22:22. > :22:28.What is the latest? Yes, we have had some issues, we had a KERS
:22:28. > :22:35.failure pretty early. It is difficult to get a judgment on the
:22:35. > :22:43.balance. Hopefully we will be in better shape for qualifying. Paul,
:22:43. > :22:47.we are mid-season now, can you see yourself being at Ferrari or
:22:47. > :22:52.Mercedes next year? I would love to be in a car which is winning races,
:22:53. > :22:57.that is the key. But clearly the results from today and the open
:22:57. > :23:03.coming races will determine that. I am a Force India driver this
:23:03. > :23:08.weekend. That's what I am thinking about. I'm just going to come in
:23:08. > :23:11.here, and I think it is great you mentioned the fans, that is
:23:11. > :23:15.something which is sincere, isn't it? The British fans really have
:23:15. > :23:22.the support they get here. Yes, I don't think there is many places
:23:22. > :23:28.like this, where people would turn up under these circumstances. Their
:23:28. > :23:33.passion for motor racing is something else. Hopefully, the race
:23:33. > :23:38.will determine why they have made the effort to travel. There are
:23:38. > :23:41.about 100 cameras trained on Paul at the moment, trying to get a shot
:23:41. > :23:47.of the man who will be looking to match his sixth place on the grid
:23:47. > :23:51.last year. We hope you go well. My question was, were you his baby sit
:23:51. > :23:58.around the garage? Well, he was just telling me that he used to be
:23:58. > :24:03.the boss. And you did not believe a word of it, did you? You know what,
:24:03. > :24:13.he is still the boss. Have a good weekend, Paul. I think we should
:24:13. > :24:18.
:24:18. > :24:26.get to know the fans now, the real stars of the British Grand Prix.
:24:26. > :24:32.Despite the British weather, our enthusiasm is not dampened. No!
:24:32. > :24:41.This man must be either Austrian or German. What is with the there.
:24:41. > :24:48.Macros? Many of us are old enough to remember Woodstock, and this is
:24:48. > :24:54.reminiscent of that. Looking for a free pint later on, but it is not
:24:54. > :24:58.going to happen. We are engulfed with gorgeous girls. All of this
:24:58. > :25:07.does not put you off? No, it is part of coming to Silverstone every
:25:07. > :25:11.year. They are always there, come rain or shine, as it is Eddie
:25:11. > :25:20.normally. This is what is going on in the Force India garage, less
:25:21. > :25:27.than half-an-hour before the start of qualifying. Caterham came in as
:25:27. > :25:32.Lotus a couple of years ago. Their best finish in 2010 was 12th. In
:25:33. > :25:37.2011, it was 13th. But this season, they have promised us that this
:25:37. > :25:43.weekend is the weekend to keep our eyes on the Caterham team. Gary
:25:43. > :25:46.Anderson has been finding out why. All the teams come to a Grand Prix
:25:47. > :25:52.with the ambition of improving the performance of the car. Some things
:25:52. > :25:57.work, some do not, but it is the expectation. Caterham have come
:25:57. > :26:03.with their package for Silverstone. That is the 2012 car, which they
:26:03. > :26:06.used in Valencia. This is the same car, updated aerodynamically to try
:26:06. > :26:09.and improve the performance. have got a new engine cover,
:26:09. > :26:13.helping the flow to the back of the car, the transition into the
:26:13. > :26:18.exhaust area is completely new. We have a central exit here. We have
:26:18. > :26:22.been quite careful on getting a very thin trailing edge. More work
:26:22. > :26:29.on the diffuser, some new details underneath. We have the new front
:26:29. > :26:32.wing here, with some enhancements on it as well. And we have some new
:26:32. > :26:38.bodywork around the front of the side pods, and some nice details on
:26:38. > :26:43.the car which we have tidied up, which, all together, make quite a
:26:43. > :26:47.nice improvement. What would you be looking as an improvement? I will
:26:47. > :26:51.be looking for something like half a second. It will be very difficult
:26:51. > :26:54.for us to analyse all of that, with the weather looking to be as
:26:54. > :26:58.changeable as it is. We will probably start off with the new
:26:58. > :27:08.package on one of the car's only, then hopefully do some analysis and
:27:08. > :27:34.
:27:34. > :27:38.pick things out, and go forward on was, we did a lot of comparison
:27:38. > :27:46.work and evaluation of the new pieces, and I am happy to say that
:27:46. > :27:55.we are transferring all of those over to Vitaly's car, because we
:27:55. > :28:05.were more than happy with the results that we saw. Lots and lots
:28:05. > :28:42.
:28:42. > :28:47.of upgrades. Bodywork, exhaust information, thanks. He was about
:28:47. > :28:52.seventh quickest, you must be really pleased with that. Yes,
:28:52. > :29:00.clearly, conditions are changeable, so seventh position is I think an
:29:00. > :29:10.indication that we're going in the right direction.
:29:10. > :29:17.
:29:17. > :29:21.RADIO: May be the change was not drivers think? To be honest, it is
:29:21. > :29:26.a very green track to start with. Not having run the package in the
:29:26. > :29:30.dry before, we improved during the session, but still more work to do.
:29:30. > :29:34.The back of the car is working really well, we just need to get
:29:34. > :29:39.the front dialled in. Good luck for the weekend. The thank you very
:29:39. > :29:43.much. Of course, this is their home Grand
:29:43. > :29:46.Prix, the race that they have said they are going to be competitive in.
:29:46. > :29:52.You can see the intricacy of his front wing, the amount of work that
:29:52. > :30:02.has gone into it. They said, this represents a four or five weeks
:30:02. > :30:06.work. How much has the sport moved on, Eddie? I am a bit old fashioned,
:30:06. > :30:11.this should be banned. This is really not Formula 1 in my opinion.
:30:11. > :30:17.But maybe everybody else has their own view. Do you not think it looks
:30:17. > :30:20.beautiful? No, it is a mess. The parts are beautifully made, but to
:30:20. > :30:24.expect a team to spend... You cannot imagine the amount of time
:30:24. > :30:29.that has been spent in the wind Tunnel, designing it, drawing it,
:30:29. > :30:34.for me, it is unnecessary, it is not required. What we need is the
:30:34. > :30:39.racing. This is confusion. disagree, I think it looks lovely.
:30:39. > :30:43.But the message from Caterham is clear - it is not just, we're going
:30:43. > :30:53.to be fast this weekend, it is also, Toro Rosso, we are coming to get
:30:53. > :30:59.
:30:59. > :31:04.from Caterham, how much are you as a team and you as a driver looking
:31:04. > :31:09.at the teams around do in terms of their development? I just focus on
:31:09. > :31:14.what I am doing. There are some people in the team scouting and
:31:14. > :31:18.seeing what is going on. It does not mean much. It they have
:31:18. > :31:24.something here or there, it is not going to change my performance. It
:31:25. > :31:30.is best with my experience, just to focus on myself. The you live near
:31:30. > :31:34.by, you are local from Milton Keynes. You have a better
:31:34. > :31:40.understanding of the weather than most, is this an opportunity or
:31:40. > :31:44.would you prefer it to be one or the other? One or the other is nice.
:31:44. > :31:49.But yesterday we were more competitive in the wet. The rain is
:31:49. > :31:55.coming down now and I am not too disappointed to see it. As long as
:31:55. > :32:01.it is constant, everybody wants that rather than a roll of the dice.
:32:01. > :32:09.Just quickly, you are normally a bit happier, have you had a bit of
:32:09. > :32:19.a bad session? Now, between P3 and qualifying, it is just a couple of
:32:19. > :32:20.
:32:20. > :32:24.hours. We have to Lionel -- final tweaks to make for the weekend.
:32:24. > :32:29.needs to take it seriously, he has not scored any point since
:32:29. > :32:35.Australia. But some people are just enjoying themselves rather than
:32:35. > :32:40.take it seriously. House special is it to see that? The fans don't know
:32:40. > :32:46.when to stop. It is like a, a ball for them. It could be a rock
:32:46. > :32:54.concert, it could be anything. Every year the fans at Silverstone
:32:54. > :33:00.surprise us even more. They have three British drivers to cheer
:33:00. > :33:05.about. It is a magic time for Formula One. One man who loves
:33:05. > :33:15.racing it is Mark Webber, this place does feel like home. Mainly
:33:15. > :33:17.
:33:17. > :33:27.because the only lives 25 miles away. -- he only lives.
:33:27. > :33:28.
:33:28. > :33:34.Let's talk about the season. Watch the speed camera. I am doing 30 mph.
:33:34. > :33:38.Hopefully you will be going faster on Saturday and Sunday. Valencia
:33:38. > :33:43.sums up Formula One for you at the moment? He would have thought of
:33:43. > :33:47.that before the race? The top three on the grid did not score points.
:33:47. > :33:53.Other people trying to make strategies work and not getting
:33:53. > :33:58.home on them. Michael and I were able to capitalise. I would have
:33:58. > :34:02.liked a smoother run here and there but I got a Monaco a victory. I
:34:02. > :34:10.have a chunk of points to launch into the next part of the
:34:10. > :34:18.Championship. Silverstone has been a bit prickly the you? We all want
:34:18. > :34:24.to do well. In 2010, it was well documented I was not happy that
:34:24. > :34:33.they but I went on to win the Grand Prix.
:34:34. > :34:38.TEAM RADIO: Can you manage a smile now? Last year, I had the race
:34:38. > :34:47.called off. TEAM RADIO: You need to maintain
:34:47. > :34:55.the gap. As a team we have learned. Let's talk about next season, where
:34:55. > :35:04.do you see yourself driving? It is getting closer to decision time.
:35:04. > :35:11.There has been some talk between the teams. I am getting closer to
:35:11. > :35:16.making that decision. Have you been speaking to other teams? There has
:35:16. > :35:22.been some discussions, yes, but it has been pretty light. Even at Red
:35:22. > :35:26.Bull, it is not a foregone conclusion yet. I need to keep
:35:26. > :35:33.performing and that is important also for the teams I would drive
:35:33. > :35:39.for. That would mean I am motivated and hungry. I had better go and
:35:39. > :35:44.find some work. Sebastian Vettel said he does not get a say in who
:35:45. > :35:54.his team mate is at Red Bull. Fernando Alonso said he does get to
:35:55. > :35:55.
:35:55. > :35:59.save his team mate is at Ferrari? know Fernando Alonso very well. The
:35:59. > :36:05.dynamics of being team-mates is different. I have never seen any
:36:05. > :36:10.team mates get on, it does not happen. It all kicks off. They have
:36:10. > :36:15.come together, what was going on there? We had just seen Mark Webber
:36:15. > :36:20.making his way over to the back of the garage. Christian Horner, the
:36:20. > :36:24.team principal is with us. Mark Webber said, I have got to go out
:36:24. > :36:28.and find some work. That makes it sound like there is no work at Red
:36:28. > :36:33.Bull for him? That is you interpreting it in a different way.
:36:34. > :36:39.He is keen to stay with the team, we are happy with his performance.
:36:39. > :36:43.We will be sitting down in the next few weeks to talk about the future.
:36:43. > :36:53.You would like him to stay? He has done a great job for us. As usual
:36:53. > :36:53.
:36:53. > :37:01.we will sit down and go through it over the next few weeks. What I am
:37:01. > :37:08.holding, this is normally sitting around the driver up here somewhere.
:37:08. > :37:13.We have had an overwhelming response from the public. Everyone
:37:13. > :37:19.has paid 15 euros to have faces put on there. You are on their a few
:37:19. > :37:24.times. Fernando Alonso is riding on the car. It is a great initiative
:37:24. > :37:30.and raised a lot of money, a million Euros for this charity to
:37:30. > :37:39.hopefully find a cure for spinal cord damage. Fernando Alonso this
:37:39. > :37:42.weekend is driving for Ferrari - Red Bull. He is on it and not in it.
:37:42. > :37:47.What do you expect to go in qualifying? Unlike Wimbledon we
:37:47. > :37:56.don't have a roof. It is a typical British summer. The Sunshine and
:37:56. > :38:03.rain. Eddie is about to be arrested. Why are you being arrested? I have
:38:03. > :38:10.never been arrested by two more beautiful women. Why are you
:38:10. > :38:15.arresting him? Crimes against fashion. Off he goes down the
:38:15. > :38:24.paddock. Let's speak to a man who has not committed any crimes
:38:24. > :38:34.against speed. Lewis Hamilton. As we could not take Hamilton to the
:38:34. > :38:44.fans, we decided away to take the fans to Hamilton.
:38:44. > :38:49.
:38:49. > :38:54.We will take a quick pick at Twitter. Get some questions for you.
:38:54. > :38:59.You were writing so quickly. While we're waiting for the messages to
:38:59. > :39:05.come in, you have some fans at a primary school near by. We will
:39:05. > :39:11.ring them. Emma's be nice to know you are inspiring young kids?
:39:12. > :39:21.never thought people would be looking up to me. Hello. It is
:39:21. > :39:28.Lewis Hamilton here. ALL: cheering. Hello everyone.
:39:28. > :39:33.How did you become a racing driver? When I was your age I started in
:39:33. > :39:40.the go-karting. It started as a hobby and then I got good at it.
:39:40. > :39:46.Then it turned into a serious hobby and I ended up in Formula One.
:39:46. > :39:51.do get the class to wish him best wishes for the weekend.
:39:51. > :39:57.I did not realise you would be in the class with the children.
:39:57. > :40:03.seven years old, they cannot be in the class of their own.
:40:03. > :40:11.How opposed would you be on a musical on your life story? Let's
:40:11. > :40:19.move on. What will the weather do for you?
:40:19. > :40:26.like it when it has been wet and it goes to dry. That is best for me.
:40:26. > :40:35.When you win on Sunday, we used stop out on track like Fernando
:40:35. > :40:42.Alonso? You always get in trouble. You can take the little fine. You
:40:42. > :40:50.do it, I will pay it. Sounds good. If a snake was eating your right
:40:50. > :40:56.arm, and a lion was eating your left arm, which one would you stop
:40:56. > :41:01.first? I think I would hit the line with the snake. Is he contemplating
:41:01. > :41:05.a move from McLaren next season? have never been in a position or
:41:05. > :41:13.when my contract has come to an end. This is my first contract which is
:41:13. > :41:17.coming to an end. You have to understand what you want to do
:41:17. > :41:25.moving forward. I am happy where I am. Are you getting what you need
:41:25. > :41:30.from McLaren? They are fantastic. I get their support every year. On a
:41:30. > :41:37.personal level, they are there for you. The very caring and flexible
:41:37. > :41:42.on certain things. Life in racing, it is not where you start, it is
:41:42. > :41:47.where you finish. Thanks for the words of wisdom. I am older than
:41:47. > :41:50.you, I was six when you were born. One thing about Lewis Hamilton, he
:41:50. > :41:56.is driving with a smile on his face and that has not always been the
:41:56. > :42:00.case? He has got confidence. He believes he has turned the tables
:42:00. > :42:05.on Jenson Button, perhaps. P has got the team behind him. They have
:42:05. > :42:09.had some little problems, but he does believe he can pull off the
:42:09. > :42:13.world Championship. Caterham believe they have a car capable of
:42:13. > :42:17.getting them into the second part of qualifying. They have been
:42:17. > :42:21.honest and so they think this weekend they will find half a
:42:21. > :42:24.second improvement at which is a huge amount in Formula One. You
:42:24. > :42:28.remember the days when you were bringing up graves and thought he
:42:28. > :42:35.would blow away the rest of the paddock, how exciting is it? Best
:42:35. > :42:39.upgrades. It is hugely exciting. It flowers all the way through, even
:42:39. > :42:43.to the sponsors. They can be upbeat about things. You need Updates to
:42:43. > :42:48.make sure the motivation within the team is successful. There is plenty
:42:48. > :42:54.of attention, photographers are India, and two of familiar faces
:42:54. > :43:00.for you? Mark Smith was part of the original Jordan car and he is
:43:00. > :43:05.technical director at Caterham. you work with John at Jordan?
:43:05. > :43:10.they have got themselves together, it is a surprise. These new Updates,
:43:10. > :43:15.can you see yourself getting into the second qualifying? I don't want
:43:15. > :43:19.to comment specifically about one event. We are making progress.
:43:19. > :43:22.Updates we have here are significant. You have seen the
:43:22. > :43:27.weather, in terms of optimising the car around that, we will have to
:43:27. > :43:33.see what happens in the next hour. John, give us an idea of the
:43:33. > :43:43.atmosphere? We had a good day out in Valencia, lots of smiles around
:43:43. > :43:45.
:43:45. > :43:49.the garage getting our driver into Q2. There are plenty of ways in
:43:49. > :43:56.enjoying qualifying and seeing how Caterham get on. But this is the
:43:56. > :44:01.way you can enjoy the action. You can ride on board with various cars.
:44:01. > :44:05.You can go online and press the red button. You can ride on board with
:44:05. > :44:15.your chosen driver. There has been some dramatic action so far this
:44:15. > :44:18.
:44:18. > :44:21.weekend. It is an upgrade, you can enjoy all the action on your mobile
:44:21. > :44:26.phone. On the website, you can keep up-to-date with the latest news.
:44:26. > :44:32.This is what the BBC play it gives you. You can run wind, you can
:44:32. > :44:36.choose chapters. We are hoping, gentlemen, best of luck Caterham
:44:36. > :44:40.can do the business. You have worked so hard. You are all very
:44:40. > :44:45.excited and we don't want to mention it too much, it would teach
:44:45. > :44:50.Eddie a thing or two. He has described his team as the biggest
:44:50. > :44:59.disappointment in Formula One this season. It is time for the first
:44:59. > :45:09.part of qualifying. Let's see how it all unfolds with David and then.
:45:09. > :45:20.
:45:20. > :45:27.Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, the British Grand
:45:27. > :45:30.Prix, at Silverstone. This year, it is the 9th race in the calendar. We
:45:30. > :45:35.are in the heart of the British countryside, and in the heart of
:45:35. > :45:39.the season, where the nitty-gritty of point-scoring could well
:45:39. > :45:48.determine the outcome of the Championship. We have gone from the
:45:48. > :45:52.street circuits to one of the faster circuits on the schedule.
:45:52. > :45:57.Cars are cornering at speeds of 180 miles an hour on some of these
:45:57. > :46:02.corners. David, you know all too well, it is a fast track.
:46:02. > :46:07.DAVID COULTHARD: It is indeed. We talk about speeds of 200 miles an
:46:07. > :46:11.hour at places like Spa and Monza, but that is not what gives the
:46:11. > :46:19.driver the thrill, it is attacking corners at great speed which does
:46:19. > :46:23.that, at places like Becketts. Nigel Mansell famously said he was
:46:23. > :46:27.pulling 12 G through that section. I am not so sure. But nonetheless,
:46:27. > :46:33.that is what the drivers are looking for, that is what gets
:46:33. > :46:39.their focus, and that is when the Grand Prix cars really come alive.
:46:39. > :46:46.We do have light rain, however. It has been dry all morning,
:46:46. > :46:50.throughout free practice, but right now, it is beginning to fall. Track
:46:50. > :46:57.temperatures, much lower than they would be at most other circuits.
:46:57. > :47:02.Our man in the pits, of course, is Gary Anderson. Any rain where you
:47:02. > :47:06.are at the moment? Yes, it is pretty light, but enough to make
:47:07. > :47:11.the track really slippery. In conditions like this, you have got
:47:11. > :47:15.to be on the track, because it will be constantly changing. It will
:47:15. > :47:20.either be at its best at the start of the session, or at the end of
:47:20. > :47:30.the session. Either way, you have got to be on the track. Any car
:47:30. > :47:35.
:47:35. > :47:41.still in the garage, they would be making a mistake. As Gary mentions,
:47:41. > :47:46.you have got to be out on the track. This is a 20 minute session, so
:47:46. > :47:53.you're not worried about the fuel. Yes, it is a factor in the wet,
:47:53. > :47:58.just as much as in the dry, but not as much so. But you want to make
:47:58. > :48:01.sure that you have got enough fuel on board to do the laps, because it
:48:01. > :48:05.could just be that one extra lap which makes the difference between
:48:05. > :48:10.getting into the next part of qualifying, or languishing at the
:48:10. > :48:20.back. A quick reminder on the Championship points, as you can
:48:20. > :48:21.
:48:21. > :48:24.see... It is not a huge margin at the top, but by becoming the first
:48:25. > :48:29.person to win twice this season, Alonso has got a bigger lead than
:48:29. > :48:34.anyone else has had this year. Lotus, just holding on to that
:48:35. > :48:38.third place, they were hurt by losing Grosjean from the race in
:48:38. > :48:48.Valencia. RADIO: The weather is getting worse,
:48:48. > :48:52.we will go straightaway. We can do five timed laps. That is a good
:48:52. > :48:58.point, getting down to the end of the pit lane and being one of the
:48:58. > :49:03.first out on to the circuit is always crucial. It is indeed. These
:49:03. > :49:07.cars are capable of idling for well over a minute. You can see Paul di
:49:07. > :49:12.Resta going for it straightaway, on the intermediate tyres. There are
:49:12. > :49:16.not enough puddles to justify going on the full wet tyres. There will
:49:16. > :49:22.be a flurry of activity, as we do the countdown, with about 40
:49:22. > :49:28.seconds to go. Look at the queue, the most expensive traffic jam you
:49:28. > :49:36.will see anywhere in the world. yes, everybody desperate to get out
:49:36. > :49:46.and get a clear run. Lewis Hamilton has had a very good record against
:49:46. > :49:48.
:49:48. > :49:57.his teammate so far this year. He is up to 8-0 at the moment. The
:49:57. > :50:00.same scoreline between Pedro de la Rosa and Karthikeyan as well.
:50:00. > :50:04.teams will have had to make a pressure adjustment to take into
:50:04. > :50:08.account that they will be losing vital temperature from the tyres in
:50:08. > :50:16.sitting at the end of the pit lane. I suspect they will have allowed
:50:16. > :50:26.for that. RADIO: We have a problem with KERS,
:50:26. > :50:28.
:50:28. > :50:33.you have no KERS, we have to do clicks rearward 10 on brake balance.
:50:33. > :50:36.That will be costing him vital time, around this very long circuit. So,
:50:36. > :50:42.Kimi Raikkonen already with a handicap. But this first lap that
:50:42. > :50:46.they do could well be the quickest lap of the session. As I was saying,
:50:46. > :50:54.they will have put a bit more air pressure into the tyre to maintain
:50:54. > :51:01.ride height. BEN EDWARDS: Yes, a course,
:51:01. > :51:04.straightaway, we are on to the intermediate tyre. The full wet
:51:04. > :51:10.tyre was being used on Friday, but the intermediate is a very good
:51:10. > :51:17.tyre. That is what all the teams will be out on. That problem with
:51:17. > :51:21.KERS, the energy recovery system, for Kimi Raikkonen...
:51:21. > :51:26.RADIO: We need to find ourselves a bit of a gap, we need to keep
:51:26. > :51:29.pushing at all times. DAVID COULTHARD: It looks like it
:51:29. > :51:38.is raining much heavier at the back of the circuit, which used to be
:51:38. > :51:41.the front of the circuit, when the pit lane ran down into Copse.
:51:41. > :51:45.Kovalainen trying to go round the outside of his teammate, and
:51:45. > :51:54.running out of road. It is all going to be about trying to find
:51:54. > :51:59.some clear space. This was pulled a racer for -- this was Paul di Resta
:51:59. > :52:09.or at Becketts. So, difficult conditions, as they try to get heat
:52:09. > :52:14.
:52:14. > :52:21.into these tyres. Because of the wet surface, the race control has
:52:21. > :52:25.deemed that they are not able to use the DRS. It was a failure of
:52:25. > :52:31.DRS which hurt Mark Webber so much in qualifying last time out, but
:52:31. > :52:34.this time, none of them are allowed to use that system. Kobayashi did a
:52:34. > :52:42.lot of laps yesterday in free practice, so he has got a good feel
:52:42. > :52:48.for the circuit, when it has been raining. He has indeed.
:52:48. > :52:51.RADIO: Conditions are going to get worse, we need to nail these first
:52:51. > :52:56.few laps. DAVID COULTHARD: Kobayashi will be
:52:56. > :53:03.a bit tentative as he tries to get heat in the tyres. In free practice,
:53:03. > :53:10.he was definitely performing well, but look how gingerly he is going
:53:10. > :53:15.through Goulding suddenly going through Becketts. Really tricky
:53:15. > :53:25.conditions for these drivers. This could be the only lap which makes a
:53:25. > :53:27.
:53:27. > :53:30.difference. When I look at the train of cars, bringing up the rear
:53:30. > :53:34.will be Felipe Massa and Michael Schumacher, so we have got some big
:53:34. > :53:39.names at the back of this chain of traffic. Kamui Kobayashi qualified
:53:39. > :53:45.really well here at Silverstone last year. He was eighth on the
:53:45. > :53:48.grid. That is his initial time, which is faster than they were
:53:48. > :53:51.doing in the full wet conditions on Friday. On board with Kimi
:53:51. > :53:54.Raikkonen, and you can see they are Raikkonen, and you can see they are
:53:54. > :54:04.all bunching up. He almost made contact with his team make there,
:54:04. > :54:08.
:54:08. > :54:16.who was trying to get past Perez, I think. This is the argy-bargy to
:54:16. > :54:26.try to find space. He was trying to hold back to get a gap, but
:54:26. > :54:35.
:54:35. > :54:39.have been like. Hulkenberg has gone fourth. If it is still raining hard,
:54:39. > :54:44.will they go any quicker than that? Michael Schumacher has just gone
:54:44. > :54:48.fastest! Although he was later out than many of the others, he has put
:54:48. > :54:52.a good lap in straightaway, and Fernando Alonso has been pushed
:54:52. > :55:00.back to fourth. Rosberg has gone second.
:55:00. > :55:05.RADIO: We need it to be done on the first two laps. Maybe this next lap
:55:05. > :55:11.will be another chance. Alonso is up on the first section.
:55:11. > :55:15.GARY ANDERSON: Those guys who went out early, they had been sitting in
:55:15. > :55:20.the pit lane, losing tyre temperature. Those guys who went
:55:20. > :55:25.out later, like Michael Schumacher, they kept tyre temperature up. If
:55:25. > :55:35.it was me, I would have gone out later, that way you can really nail
:55:35. > :55:37.
:55:37. > :55:42.the tyres while they are still warm. Alonso, David, looking to be on a
:55:42. > :55:47.good lap. DAVID COULTHARD: I think what Gary
:55:47. > :55:53.said is absolutely crucial, about maintaining that a budget.
:55:54. > :55:59.RADIO: Michael, we think four or five minutes of light rain, so the
:55:59. > :56:04.track will be at its best in these next moments.
:56:04. > :56:07.BEN EDWARDS: Maldonado has gone second. Remember, seven go out
:56:07. > :56:12.after this first part of qualifying, that is what we are really looking
:56:12. > :56:16.at, those who will not make it through. At the moment, Webber and
:56:16. > :56:26.Vettel are both in the drop zone, would you believe it? Hamilton has
:56:26. > :56:42.
:56:42. > :56:48.Meanwhile, Button is in the drop zone. Meanwhile, Ricardo is
:56:48. > :56:51.lighting up the timing screens, and Massa has just gone fastest of all.
:56:51. > :56:59.They are trying to find their way through these ever-changing
:56:59. > :57:03.conditions. There is no rain at all up in our commentary box. Look how
:57:03. > :57:07.visibly wet the track surface is as they go through Copse corner.
:57:07. > :57:14.Jenson Button, still running in some traffic, he needs to try to
:57:14. > :57:20.get some clear space. RADIO: The track is drying out.
:57:20. > :57:24.Make a gap to the front. The track is actually getting drier,
:57:24. > :57:30.according to Sergio Perez. With more cars going round, that helps
:57:31. > :57:34.as well. Michael Schumacher down in tenth at the moment. Kobayashi is
:57:34. > :57:38.fastest in the Sauber. It could be one of those sessions when you just
:57:38. > :57:41.keep going round and round, and hope that you get the best lap at
:57:41. > :57:47.the end. DAVID COULTHARD: That's why you
:57:47. > :57:56.heard to fuel the car for the whole session. Of course, you will get a
:57:56. > :58:02.weight penalty, but enables you to get as many laps in as possible.
:58:02. > :58:12.Let's see what Lewis Hamilton does. He was fastest on his previous lap,
:58:12. > :58:17.
:58:17. > :58:21.Toro Rosso did a lot of laps with both of their drivers in wet
:58:21. > :58:24.practice on Friday, and it seems to be helping them at the moment, with
:58:24. > :58:32.both of their drivers being higher up the list then you might have
:58:32. > :58:38.expected. It is a question for the team, do you compromise your dry
:58:38. > :58:42.set up, running the risk that if it dries out, you could be struggling?
:58:42. > :58:46.Toro Rosso have been struggling to deliver performance in the dry this
:58:46. > :58:51.year, so it makes sense to me that they would say, let's gamble that
:58:51. > :58:57.we are going to have a wet weekend. The top teams need to try to cover
:58:57. > :59:04.all bases. They need to split the set-ups, if they can get one of the
:59:04. > :59:12.drivers to accept haven't a compromise. -- having a compromise.
:59:12. > :59:20.Hamilton has backed off. So, we are getting part of the story right now.
:59:20. > :59:30.Look who has gone fastest, Jean- Eric Vergne! Indeed, so, Toro Rosso
:59:30. > :59:36.
:59:36. > :59:41.have got the car working we have over 10 minutes to go in
:59:41. > :59:49.this session. Jenson Button is in the drop zone at the moment. He is
:59:49. > :59:53.looking better. Rosberg was so quick earlier on his in 17th place.
:59:53. > :00:02.The teams have to assess the conditions. Drivers will have a big
:00:02. > :00:09.say in this. But sent his 15th. Not as far up as he would have liked.
:00:09. > :00:16.Maldonado has just done a 1:47. That will play a factor in this
:00:16. > :00:20.qualifying. Plenty of time to go, over nine minutes. We will find at
:00:20. > :00:25.soon if the teams have fuelled a long enough to allow the drivers to
:00:25. > :00:30.stay out there or whether they will have to top up the fuel system.
:00:30. > :00:35.are on board with Kimi Raikkonen. Gary Anderson, what would be the
:00:35. > :00:43.transition ragtime where they think we need to put up slicks on?
:00:43. > :00:48.Usually about 10 to 12 seconds. That would be a 1:43, maybe 44, but
:00:48. > :00:55.it depends if it is patchy. Only the driver knows which part of the
:00:55. > :01:02.tracks is really wet. We are not a million miles away from that, nine
:01:02. > :01:08.seconds to go. Much we will keep an eye on that. David, as Gary was
:01:08. > :01:12.saying, your decision making process at this time, your feedback
:01:12. > :01:16.to the team is crucial question mark this is where it needs to be
:01:17. > :01:23.led from the cockpit. They have weathermen stationed up wins, but
:01:23. > :01:29.the driver cannot be aware of that. If it is a shared responsibility
:01:30. > :01:35.during a normal running where there are changing conditions, the driver
:01:35. > :01:40.has to take responsibility. The team do not know how the tyres are,
:01:40. > :01:45.is the track to dry to work? All the engineers and decision-makers
:01:45. > :01:54.are sitting just below us. They cannot judge how slippy the
:01:54. > :02:00.trackers. Perez has gone fast as for the moment, so you have the
:02:00. > :02:10.Sauber cars one and two. Mark Webber always goes well at
:02:10. > :02:13.
:02:13. > :02:21.Silverstone. But he is 17. TEAM RADIO: Do not use DRS. Do not
:02:21. > :02:28.use DRS. Lewis has not come in and changed his tyres, DRS is disabled
:02:28. > :02:33.and won't be enabled until the race director give the message. It is
:02:33. > :02:38.likely were ring he would be distracted to ask that question.
:02:38. > :02:44.is only about 15 seconds off a dry where the time. We are getting to
:02:44. > :02:50.that time, but there is some drizzle around. It does look as
:02:50. > :02:57.though it is raining slightly on that part of the circuit. Another
:02:57. > :03:02.bit of traffic from the Caterham. Alonso is a winding it up for
:03:02. > :03:06.another lap. He is not looking too bad at the moment. It is the first
:03:06. > :03:14.17 who go through this part of qualifying with just over six
:03:14. > :03:20.minutes to go. Sauber and Caterham both have dry tyres available. The
:03:20. > :03:26.Sauber making the transition and putting slicks on, I believe. Gary,
:03:26. > :03:31.is this good timing from Sauber's point of view? They will have to do
:03:31. > :03:41.these next few laps very carefully. It will get quicker, but it is
:03:41. > :03:43.
:03:43. > :03:51.about survival. Sergio Perez has also come in, so both Sauber are on
:03:51. > :04:00.the slicks. TEAM RADIO: Seven minutes to go,
:04:00. > :04:05.Mark, seven minutes. A little bit of a reign at Maggots and Stoke.
:04:06. > :04:10.used to have a small clock in my cockpit so I did not have to ask
:04:10. > :04:18.that. And very cheap and efficient way of not having to trouble
:04:18. > :04:27.yourself with a radio conversation. Perez and Kobayashi are both going
:04:27. > :04:35.quickest. It may be a punt for them because they won't go that much
:04:35. > :04:40.quicker on their intermediate. It is the middle sector through Copse
:04:40. > :04:49.and Becketts of that look pretty damn. Those slick tyres will lose
:04:49. > :04:56.temperature so quickly. We talk about the cooling temperatures of
:04:56. > :05:01.these tyres. Kobayashi is four seconds down on the middle splits
:05:01. > :05:08.on his slicks. But he has a few laps. If he can keep the heat in
:05:08. > :05:14.his tyres, he will be OK. If he loses it, it does not matter how
:05:14. > :05:20.many laps he does. We will lose seven cars in this process. A
:05:20. > :05:25.Vettel tops the times at the moment. Jenson Button coming around to try
:05:25. > :05:30.and improve. He is still only 18th and that is a surprise Jenson
:05:30. > :05:38.Button has not gone quicker as yet. Hamilton is not that much ahead of
:05:38. > :05:43.him. Coming in 14th place. We are on board with Rosberg, no window
:05:43. > :05:53.wiper on his visor or on the camera. That is what he is getting up from
:05:53. > :05:53.
:05:53. > :05:59.the cockpit. He is in 17th place. A little bit of work to be done. He
:05:59. > :06:04.is on the cusp of the drop zone. Sauber have decided to get back
:06:04. > :06:10.onto the intermediate tyres, slick experiment and it did not work. Now,
:06:10. > :06:16.you have to deliver it on the intermediate. Do you put a fresh
:06:16. > :06:23.set of intermediates on? TEAM RADIO: Paul, background. We
:06:23. > :06:28.will need an almighty time-lapse. Yes, Paul di Resta is 15th. It is
:06:28. > :06:38.all going to change in the closing moments of this session. Just
:06:38. > :06:41.
:06:41. > :06:45.watching Timo Glock heading down the straight. He is in the Marussia.
:06:45. > :06:48.Good news for those who have been out on the intermediate saw the
:06:49. > :06:56.whole session. Jean-Eric Vergne has just gone fastest in the middle
:06:56. > :07:00.sector. It shows the middle sector is drying up. Is it too dry as BC a
:07:00. > :07:08.power slide from Timo Glock as he runs wide as he comes out of the
:07:08. > :07:13.last part of Club corner. Is the overheating the intermediate? Is it
:07:13. > :07:19.blistering on the rear tyres? This is a replay of Jenson Button. It
:07:19. > :07:26.does not look good. Jean-Eric Vergne has just concluded a his lap
:07:26. > :07:36.and he has also gone quickest of all in the middle sector. That is
:07:36. > :07:46.
:07:46. > :07:56.drifting from CROWD GROANS. Jenson Button is still in the drop
:07:56. > :07:57.
:07:57. > :08:03.zone. He could be in trouble. TEAM RADIO: We need three more
:08:03. > :08:07.tenths of a second. What about that for pressure. The British Grand
:08:07. > :08:12.Prix, so far he has not finished higher than fourth place for a
:08:12. > :08:17.start it he is normally the master of changing conditions. But in this
:08:17. > :08:21.qualifying session it is all about getting a clear lap, judging
:08:21. > :08:26.exactly. Paul di Resta is another man who has the pressure on him,
:08:26. > :08:33.coming in in 15th place. He has not managed to improve on his first
:08:33. > :08:42.sector. His middle sector has come up Greenwich says it is a personal
:08:42. > :08:50.best. Will this improve his over all lap time. -- come up green,
:08:50. > :08:56.which says it is a personal best. big slide from Paul di Resta.
:08:56. > :09:01.Waterlog, so you have to be careful not to run a wheel over the edge.
:09:01. > :09:05.Di Resta trying to get himself into that position of a little more
:09:05. > :09:15.safety. I am not sure it will make a difference. Kimi Raikkonen has
:09:15. > :09:28.
:09:28. > :09:33.session. Half a minute ago and Jenson Button is on a better lap.
:09:33. > :09:38.It should see him improve. McKee has got to go on to that time laugh.
:09:38. > :09:45.He has got to now do the lap when it counts. He has gone over the
:09:45. > :09:50.line with 20 seconds to go. If he does not get off 18th place, he
:09:51. > :09:57.will be at the back of the grid. Rosberg is likely to beat one of
:09:57. > :10:04.the ones to drop out. He is in the pit in 17th place. If Jenson Button
:10:04. > :10:09.manages to do the lap, Rosberg will be one of the big scalps dropping
:10:10. > :10:14.out on the first part of qualifying. Jenson Button cannot make a mistake,
:10:14. > :10:20.maybe use different lines to find the grip. Aim for the dry patches
:10:20. > :10:26.as much as you can. This is a sacrificial set of intermediate. It
:10:26. > :10:32.is all about this single lap. If he does it, he goes through to the
:10:32. > :10:38.next part of qualifying. It is the second longest lap at Silverstone.
:10:38. > :10:46.It takes a bit of time to get a round. First sector time looking
:10:46. > :10:54.good, a personal best. Will it get him above Rosberg? It is the target
:10:54. > :11:00.to the next split. He is up and Rosberg time. Somebody is spinning.
:11:00. > :11:05.It is Timo Glock. The it happened in front of the commentary box, we
:11:05. > :11:15.have not seen that yet. Be looked like he'd come in contact with the
:11:15. > :11:17.
:11:17. > :11:23.wall. The yellow flags should allow Jenson Button to get to the line.
:11:23. > :11:29.But in out of the last corner - who will he get himself up? No, he is
:11:29. > :11:35.still 18th! He has not got through to Q2. Did he have to back off on
:11:35. > :11:40.Club corner? It is normal the ozone well-staffed before the incident.
:11:40. > :11:45.The marshalling system is not a equidistant between those zones.
:11:45. > :11:51.The yellow flag has been weighed just at the exit of Club corner. --
:11:51. > :11:57.waved. My gut feeling is, it might have been worth a punt going for it
:11:57. > :12:05.and then talk to the stewards afterwards. Timo Glock spins off
:12:05. > :12:13.his rear tyres. He goes on to a green painted surface, it is not
:12:13. > :12:17.grass. By the time he realises, it has gone too far. They sigh of
:12:17. > :12:24.relief from Marussia, he did not make contact with the walls. Those
:12:24. > :12:34.front wings are expensive. Coasting round now, one of the heroes. But
:12:34. > :12:35.
:12:35. > :12:43.Jenson Button is out. Petrov and Kovalainen.
:12:44. > :12:53.TEAM RADIO: I am afraid we are out. It is amazing how much more grip I
:12:53. > :12:58.had on this tier. So the woes continue for Jenson Button. This is
:12:58. > :13:02.not a circuit he has excelled. His best result has been forced. He
:13:02. > :13:11.will be very disappointed and Nico Rosberg showing a bit of pace out
:13:11. > :13:16.there at times. We are joined by Vitaly Petrov. Caterham were
:13:16. > :13:22.desperately hoping both the cars would make it through to the second
:13:22. > :13:25.part of qualifying on pure pace. But Petrov has a qualified his
:13:25. > :13:35.team-mate for the second time this season. You must be pleased with
:13:35. > :13:36.
:13:36. > :13:40.your performance? First time I have managed to beat my team-mate. The
:13:40. > :13:46.package is working. Been looks like the team is getting positive. I
:13:46. > :13:54.know conditions were not fantastic, but everyone was on the same. It
:13:54. > :13:58.was very difficult to drive. The tyres are getting better, so you do
:13:58. > :14:05.not know how much you can push. Talking about tyres, did you think
:14:05. > :14:10.this is the time for slick tyres? think you know more than me. Every
:14:10. > :14:16.second lap my engineer asked me if we were ready to push the dry tyre.
:14:16. > :14:21.I said we were not ready. We took the right decision to put two sets
:14:21. > :14:27.of intermediate Bostock that they are working very well. I managed to
:14:27. > :14:31.continue and go quicker. Congratulations for your qualifying.
:14:31. > :14:40.Give us an idea of how much conversation there was going on in
:14:40. > :14:46.the cockpit. Are you pretty much in I have to ask him not to talk to me
:14:46. > :14:51.too much. Sometimes he disturbs me when I go into the fast corner. But
:14:51. > :14:57.this time we did have a lot of discussions about which tyres we
:14:57. > :15:02.wanted to use. It was all during the fastest lap. Congratulations,
:15:02. > :15:07.we will let you face the rest of the media. Thanks for letting us
:15:07. > :15:11.into your garage. I want to speak to John he spoke to earlier. What
:15:11. > :15:16.was fascinating for Eddie and I, with six minutes to go you came
:15:16. > :15:23.over and said we have made a big decision you are going to go slick
:15:23. > :15:33.on Kovalainen's car. But then you send him out on intermediate. Why
:15:33. > :15:36.
:15:36. > :15:41.here, and we could see the weather clearly getting worse, so we
:15:41. > :15:44.thought it was not quite going to work for us. On a different day, we
:15:44. > :15:47.would have rolled the dice and seeing what happened. But you just
:15:47. > :15:52.have to look at who got knocked out, it was not easy conditions for
:15:52. > :15:59.anyone, and we had not really run the new package in these mixed
:15:59. > :16:04.conditions before. So, unlucky, I would say. How many other teams -
:16:04. > :16:09.obviously you're monitoring the other cars, your opposition, about
:16:09. > :16:13.when they changed over that tyres - was that your decision? For us, it
:16:13. > :16:17.is very much a driver decision, clearly with the engineer, but
:16:17. > :16:21.ultimately the driver. They have the best field, they are the person
:16:21. > :16:26.out on the track, who understands where the grip is. Heikki was happy
:16:26. > :16:31.to go for six, but in the end, it was his call. I would say looking
:16:31. > :16:35.outside the front here, it was probably the right one.
:16:35. > :16:41.absolutely was, because we can see the rain coming down now. Thank you
:16:41. > :16:45.very much for joining us. You will know from experience, Eddie, how
:16:45. > :16:49.difficult it is to make these kind of conditions. We have seen wet and
:16:49. > :16:55.dry conditions throughout the weekend. It is now very much wet
:16:55. > :17:01.for the second part of qualifying. They are all keen to get up there.
:17:01. > :17:06.BEN EDWARDS: Another queue at the end of the pit lane, as the second
:17:06. > :17:10.part of qualifying gets under way. The teams are not lined up as we
:17:10. > :17:16.are accustomed to seeing them. Here at Silverstone, you have got that
:17:17. > :17:24.big wall, and the fans from the grandstand cannot CVs pit garages
:17:24. > :17:30.at the end, so they decided to put the top teams in the middle.
:17:30. > :17:34.DAVID COULTHARD: Yes, you get you so used to seeing particular teams
:17:34. > :17:39.at one particular end of the pit lane. But it does seem that
:17:39. > :17:46.Silverstone has done so many great things, but the design there of
:17:46. > :17:53.having the pit lane where you cannot actually see the cars is a
:17:53. > :17:59.bit of a shame. But they have reacted, which is good. This looks
:17:59. > :18:04.like it is getting ever wetter. Gary, give us your thoughts. We are
:18:04. > :18:14.seeing a lot of cars on the full wet, is that the way to go?
:18:14. > :18:15.
:18:15. > :18:24.GARY ANDERSON: Yes, definitely. They are out on the intermediate,
:18:24. > :18:28.and they will be finding out that it is very, very wet out there.
:18:28. > :18:36.Never mind the fast corners, it is on the straights where they will
:18:36. > :18:40.end up aquaplaning. The full wet tyre manages to move 60 litres of
:18:40. > :18:43.water per second, as opposed to 20 litres of water a second for the
:18:44. > :18:48.intermediate. So there is not really much choice. You can see the
:18:48. > :18:53.rain coming down. DAVID COULTHARD: We saw images of
:18:53. > :18:57.Jude Law in one of the garages, the concentration on his face, and that
:18:57. > :19:02.is exactly what the drivers will be doing. You do not get to see too
:19:02. > :19:05.much of them, of course, but their eyes will be getting that bit wider,
:19:05. > :19:11.they blew be gripping on the steering wheel a bit tighter, and
:19:11. > :19:16.that is the reason why that corner, turn three, is not a corner in the
:19:16. > :19:20.dry, but in the wet, it is a major event. Jean-Eric Vergne, everything
:19:20. > :19:30.just titans. We see the Ferrari coming in, the intermediate coming
:19:30. > :19:40.off, the full wets going on. Meanwhile, the Toro Rosso of Jean-
:19:40. > :19:41.
:19:41. > :19:47.Eric Vergne, one of the first out on circuit. They have had the
:19:47. > :19:54.advantage of being out nice and early. Both of their drivers did
:19:54. > :19:59.lots of laps yesterday. They were impressed with some of the times
:19:59. > :20:04.that Ricardo was doing. And all of those laps could work out for them
:20:04. > :20:10.today, as both Daniel Ricardo and Jean-Eric Vergne have been doing
:20:10. > :20:15.well so far. But just look how the car is twitching. If you just hit
:20:15. > :20:20.that puddle slightly differently, it will go flying off. This is just
:20:20. > :20:23.where we saw Senna going off yesterday. And there is another big
:20:23. > :20:28.puddle just done here on the approach to Stowe.
:20:28. > :20:34.DAVID COULTHARD: Yes, the standing water is a feature of Silverstone,
:20:34. > :20:39.which is a combination of old Tarmac and the new surface. It is
:20:39. > :20:47.an airfield circuit, but there is undulation, which is where the
:20:47. > :20:53.water comes across. You can see it on the surface. The driver is
:20:53. > :21:00.trying to position his car, to get the dry areas. Schumacher is off
:21:00. > :21:06.somewhere. He was in fifth gear, so we know that it was a fast corner.
:21:06. > :21:09.He gets into reverse... He is still running, so he can still recover
:21:10. > :21:13.from this and get back in the hunt. Jean-Eric Vergne is currently
:21:13. > :21:19.fastest. You're looking at a replay of Jean-Eric Vergne at the moment.
:21:19. > :21:23.In fact, Perez has just gone quickest. That was a big slide from
:21:23. > :21:29.Jean-Eric Vergne, and you can see the amount of spray. Conditions
:21:29. > :21:35.have changed completely since the start. This is coming into Becketts,
:21:35. > :21:40.Michael had just gone through the first sector. That's him passing
:21:40. > :21:44.Ortiz the old Club corner. He loses control after touching the kerb,
:21:44. > :21:48.manages to keep it off the grass, and then, luckily for Michael,
:21:49. > :21:55.keeps it out of the gravel. He has got more than nine lives when it
:21:55. > :22:02.comes to avoiding spins and getting back out on the track. Not a
:22:02. > :22:07.glimmer from Ross Brawn. I thought he had some damage there for a
:22:07. > :22:11.moment. You can see the aquaplaning, as Michael tries to get the
:22:12. > :22:17.throttle open. When you get to this level of water on the surface, you
:22:17. > :22:21.just cannot clear it. You mentioned 60 metres a second are cleared by
:22:21. > :22:25.the wet tyres, but the issue is the big wooden plank below the surface,
:22:25. > :22:32.which seals with the water, and it becomes the world's fastest
:22:32. > :22:40.skateboard. It is like skimming stones. They are talented drivers,
:22:40. > :22:46.but... There is only so much they can do. This was Michael losing the
:22:46. > :22:54.rear end, and going across the gravel. He rejoins at the exit of
:22:54. > :22:56.Club. Gary, a quick word from you in terms of the set-up on the cars.
:22:56. > :23:00.With the parc ferme regulations, you're not allowed to make many
:23:00. > :23:05.changes between qualifying and the race - how many teams will have
:23:05. > :23:12.looked at the forecast for tomorrow and gone for a wet set-up? Oh, and
:23:12. > :23:19.Alonso on the hangar straight! goodness, he just keeps it away
:23:19. > :23:24.from the wall. That's exactly where Senna lost it yesterday. As you say,
:23:24. > :23:27.Ben, great recovery from Alonso, but you just cannot judge the
:23:27. > :23:32.moment when you're going to start skimming across the surface. He
:23:32. > :23:36.knows he is heading towards the tyres, so he lifts off the brake.
:23:36. > :23:41.Anyone who has ever done any advanced driving on a skid-pan, you
:23:41. > :23:48.get your foot off the brake. You have to find the grip that is
:23:48. > :23:53.available. And this is Schumacher off the track again, down at Stowe
:23:53. > :23:57.corner. He was known as the rain master in the past. Definitely
:23:57. > :24:07.difficult conditions for the drivers. And Alonso, rain master
:24:07. > :24:12.
:24:12. > :24:17.earlier this year in malacia. -- in Malaysia. Fernando on the
:24:17. > :24:22.radio, calling for a red flag. What are your thoughts, Gary? Everybody
:24:22. > :24:28.has been out since the start, I don't think that they need to put a
:24:28. > :24:38.red flag out. It is not too bad at the moment. There are puddles, but
:24:38. > :24:41.
:24:41. > :24:47.you know where they are. The wet tyres are 10mm bigger in diameter,
:24:47. > :24:50.so it does raise the front of the car. I respect your point of view
:24:50. > :24:55.that the conditions are not too bad, but I am standing here perspiring
:24:55. > :25:05.in the commentary box, because I can feel what it is like Wendy's
:25:05. > :25:12.cars go, especially on a high speed circuit like Silverstone.
:25:12. > :25:20.RADIO: the Sauber was dead slow in the last corner. You have got
:25:20. > :25:24.Kobayashi just behind you, he could be trying to set a time to lap.
:25:24. > :25:32.As they continue their conversation, Hamilton is second, so he is in
:25:32. > :25:37.good shape. In the drop zone, we have got Maldonado and di Resta
:25:37. > :25:42.among others. That's Massa. That's scary, because they are travelling
:25:42. > :25:46.so fast. It is bread flag, so the session has been stopped. That's an
:25:46. > :25:51.interesting situation, stopping the qualifying. Presumably it is just
:25:51. > :25:57.due to the conditions. We have not seen any other major off from
:25:57. > :26:02.seen any other major off from anyone. One point, you will
:26:02. > :26:05.remember Ferrari went out on the intermediate first of all, and then
:26:05. > :26:10.switched to the full wets, but that is not looking like such a good
:26:10. > :26:14.choice now. They will have to do their laps later on, when it could
:26:14. > :26:18.be wetter. Indeed, but you can only confirm the mistake in the fullness
:26:18. > :26:22.of time, and you have got to believe in your convictions, and it
:26:22. > :26:27.felt like the right decision for them at the time. It is easy for us
:26:27. > :26:30.now to say, what were they playing at? You have got to cover your
:26:30. > :26:38.bases in the transitional weather conditions as a team. Sometimes it
:26:38. > :26:44.is difficult to get the two drivers to agree, because one will always
:26:44. > :26:49.feel that he is being compromised. So, the clock has stopped, with
:26:49. > :26:52.just over six minutes to go. It does not look like there is any
:26:52. > :26:59.sign of this rain passing. It looks like pretty much blanket cloud to
:26:59. > :27:05.me. We can see the helicopter up there, so at least it is not low
:27:05. > :27:12.cloud. The clock has stopped, so we should get it started again,
:27:12. > :27:20.although when is a bit of a question. Senna, having not done a
:27:20. > :27:25.time at all in this session, for some reason, whereas Hamilton is
:27:25. > :27:29.second-fastest. At the moment, without any cars going round, the
:27:29. > :27:35.standing water will be gathering even more. You can see charming
:27:35. > :27:40.waiting on the left -- you can see Charlie Whiting on the left, he has
:27:41. > :27:45.got the ultimate decision. GARY ANDERSON: I think the red flag
:27:45. > :27:49.is wrong. We have a 15 minute practice session, and it is about
:27:49. > :27:53.making decisions in that 15 minutes, the best decision that you as a
:27:53. > :27:55.team can make. Ferrari made the wrong decision, going out and
:27:56. > :28:01.intermediates. I would never have made that decision on the
:28:01. > :28:06.conditions that I can see from the pit lane. So, in reality, they made
:28:06. > :28:11.the wrong decision and paid the price. So what happens now is, we
:28:11. > :28:15.wait for six minutes and 19 seconds, and the guys who went out and got
:28:15. > :28:21.the decision right, all of those guys, waste of time. Because now,
:28:21. > :28:27.you can wait for the track to get better, the Red flag will be taken
:28:27. > :28:32.away, the track may be faster. So, it is not really what it should be
:28:32. > :28:36.about. DAVID COULTHARD: Yes, so you just
:28:36. > :28:46.think that it deprives those who made the right decision of having
:28:46. > :28:47.
:28:47. > :28:52.the just reward? Yes, but the end of the pit lane is always open, if
:28:52. > :28:56.you do not want to drive around, you can just come in. You do not
:28:56. > :29:06.need a red flag. It is up to you, to decide whether you can beat that
:29:06. > :29:11.
:29:11. > :29:16.time. A discussion point indeed. We have an interrupted qualifying here
:29:16. > :29:19.at Silverstone. JAKE HUMPHREY: That's the opinion
:29:19. > :29:23.of Gary Anderson, the kind of opinion which I would imagine
:29:23. > :29:27.people at home are applauding. Everybody who has turned up wants
:29:27. > :29:30.to see racing, and so do you as well. You can understand Gary's
:29:30. > :29:35.point of view. You drive to the conditions, and if there happens to
:29:35. > :29:40.be a lot of rain, then do it. could have almost predicted every
:29:40. > :29:44.single one of those words, because I am so used to Gary, he is an
:29:44. > :29:49.absolute expert in this situation. He defied logic many times when we
:29:49. > :29:53.were working together at Jordan, it always seemed to get the conditions
:29:54. > :30:02.absolutely right. He is absolutely right. They may even get Ferrari
:30:02. > :30:06.back into the top 10, and it is wrong. There is no obligation for
:30:06. > :30:13.them to drive around, and they have been given a second chance, and I
:30:13. > :30:16.don't think that is right. Charlie Whiting is sitting there,
:30:16. > :30:26.seeing Fernando Alonso nearly going into the wall, and he is thinking
:30:26. > :30:29.
:30:29. > :30:33.to himself, I do not want to be in It is equally possible for Fernando
:30:33. > :30:41.Alonso to park the car up if he believes conditions are not good
:30:41. > :30:45.enough. He has been given a second chance, whether it is for a Ferrari
:30:45. > :30:51.favouritism, I do not know. I do not think so because Charlie
:30:51. > :30:56.Whiting is a very fair person. reason can be FIA give us for
:30:56. > :31:03.putting qualifying back on and let us sort out the grid for tomorrow?
:31:03. > :31:06.They may say, conditions are too dangerous. Forget whether it is
:31:06. > :31:11.inclement or not, it is too dangerous and we are going to
:31:12. > :31:16.declare qualifying and pole position exactly as it is now. That
:31:16. > :31:21.is probably in their grasp. It may be the easiest thing to do if
:31:21. > :31:28.conditions daylight this. In Brazil a couple of years ago, we had a lot
:31:28. > :31:33.of rain during a qualifying session. There was a red flag, and then they
:31:33. > :31:39.decided to start the qualifying again and then there was a big
:31:39. > :31:44.accident. You have to Remember the climate, the ambient temperature in
:31:44. > :31:49.Brazil is different to what we are witnessing today. You are telling
:31:49. > :31:52.me. There is little chance the water will dissipate off the track
:31:52. > :31:57.and I think they should have finished it off in that and then
:31:57. > :32:01.declared the next session maybe should have been put to one side.
:32:01. > :32:05.You are not wrong about the temperature, 15 degrees at the
:32:05. > :32:08.moment. My decision to leave my coat in the office not a good one.
:32:08. > :32:12.coat in the office not a good one. Let's look at some of those moments,
:32:12. > :32:17.particularly Michael Schumacher. When Michael Schumacher is
:32:17. > :32:20.struggling, you know it is difficult. When you see Michael
:32:20. > :32:28.Schumacher flying off the road and lots of others, and these are
:32:28. > :32:33.experts, you realise they are absolutely struggling. But, the run
:32:33. > :32:38.over at Silverstone is a very safe track. It is well designed for that
:32:38. > :32:44.reason. But conditions mean you have to drive the car to what the
:32:44. > :32:50.conditions and the car's ability. We are getting a good idea of the
:32:50. > :32:54.speed. Fernando Alonso, you'll see how hard he is working the wheel.
:32:54. > :32:59.It is always fascinating to watch the steering wheel. See how hard he
:32:59. > :33:04.works when he starts to lose control of the car. They are always
:33:04. > :33:11.remembering, in the FIA office, this is a high-speed circuits. They
:33:11. > :33:18.are not just tootling around as if they are in Monaco or Abu Dhabi,
:33:18. > :33:24.they are going extremely fast? they are, and nobody wants an
:33:24. > :33:28.accident, but you want to see a driver with the skill of Alonso.
:33:28. > :33:34.Outside of the UK they consider Fernando Alonso being the No 1
:33:34. > :33:38.driver in Formula One at the moment. And the fact he is leading the
:33:38. > :33:43.Championship in what is probably not the best car, endorse his that.
:33:43. > :33:49.He just have to slow the car down and himself down. As much as you
:33:49. > :33:53.believe this is helping the likes of Fernando Alonso, what does this
:33:53. > :33:59.do for Sergio Perez. He set a brilliant lap time, got their
:33:59. > :34:03.strategy straight on, and now they are punished? Maybe we are talking
:34:03. > :34:08.too soon? I do not see this rain easing off. Maybe the cloud has got
:34:08. > :34:13.a bit higher and there is some hope. He has done everything possible,
:34:13. > :34:18.being quickest and he should be allowed to keep it. That is the
:34:18. > :34:22.point of Gary Anderson. I support that. I think we should say well
:34:22. > :34:27.done to the thousands of people who not only battled to get in here
:34:27. > :34:33.today, but have camped overnight in a very wet campsites. There they
:34:33. > :34:38.are, still sitting in the grandstands. They are the best in
:34:38. > :34:43.the world and they need to be in weather like this? I cannot pay
:34:43. > :34:48.enough compliments to those people. We are all privileged, we have a
:34:48. > :34:52.sport which started as a hobby, then became a sport and then a
:34:52. > :34:57.business. Without those fans, and I am grateful to them, I don't think
:34:57. > :35:01.we would be out here doing what we do. Words escape me because I
:35:01. > :35:06.cannot be more complimentary two years. The only thing Eddie is
:35:06. > :35:10.disappointing about, is at a Grand Prix there are lots of people
:35:10. > :35:14.wanting an autograph or a photo. And now you have three the lonely
:35:14. > :35:19.looking men are walking along who says the paddock is the place to be
:35:19. > :35:24.this weekend. It is not the place to be if you add Jenson Button. He
:35:24. > :35:29.struggled in qualifying and had a few tough last races, he is with
:35:29. > :35:39.Lee McKenzie. We are caught out by the yellow? He got works for some
:35:39. > :35:47.reason in the last sector and no where else. 1:seven seconds on my
:35:47. > :35:52.dashboard. It is a pity. But definitely was not meant to be. The
:35:52. > :35:56.good thing is I suppose, the positive you can take his these
:35:56. > :36:02.guys are running round for two more sessions on their tyres and it is
:36:02. > :36:08.going to rain tomorrow. It will make the race very difficult. I am
:36:08. > :36:12.back in 18th, but maybe I will have better tyres. Up until the last run,
:36:12. > :36:18.what was the difference? You are struggling and I heard you mention
:36:18. > :36:23.tyres? I could not get any heat in the front tyres. Coming out of the
:36:23. > :36:30.pits I felt it should a ring. I was hitting the brakes, on the throttle,
:36:30. > :36:40.weaving. That is the reason I could not get a lifetime out of the tyre.
:36:40. > :36:43.
:36:43. > :36:49.-- weaving. Webber Went 19th to fourth last weekend, so you
:36:49. > :36:54.probably wouldn't mind going 18th to first this weekend? I would like
:36:54. > :37:00.to put on a better show for the fans. But it is the story of my
:37:00. > :37:04.year. It is pretty normal. I know I can drive a racing car in the wet.
:37:04. > :37:09.I think he is doing his best to smile through that. He said it
:37:09. > :37:15.pretty much sums up his ear. A bit of rain, we are still on the
:37:15. > :37:20.television and Eddie decides it is time to go and get some soup. What
:37:21. > :37:26.kind of soup is that? It is some kind of broth and this is the
:37:26. > :37:31.temperature I am most accustomed to. Let's head up to the commentary box.
:37:31. > :37:35.David, we have heard the thoughts of Gary Anderson and we have heard
:37:36. > :37:42.from Eddie Jordan, but I am fascinated to hear from not just
:37:42. > :37:48.the two Abu, but from a man who is here with us for the British Grand
:37:48. > :37:54.Prix, ladies and gentlemen, Murray Walker. You have chosen a dry place
:37:54. > :37:59.to be? I am absolutely fine and revelling in this. It is an
:37:59. > :38:03.indication of what a fabulous system we have got for qualifying.
:38:03. > :38:07.For years we struggled the best way to sort out the people who would be
:38:07. > :38:12.on the front row of the grid. Now we had the three sessions, and
:38:12. > :38:17.unless I am mistaken, it is seven years since the system began and it
:38:17. > :38:23.is really working. We are waiting for the final session and lock who
:38:23. > :38:31.is still not on the front row of the grid. Maldonado, Grosjean,
:38:32. > :38:35.Felipe Massa, Alonso, La Charette. It is Eddie, surely you cannot have
:38:35. > :38:40.proved they have stopped this particular session. There is
:38:40. > :38:46.another session to go, but also part of the second one to happen so
:38:46. > :38:52.we are not sure where this grid is growing -- going? Famously Eddie,
:38:52. > :38:56.you are a hard man and you are demonstrating that now. But I agree
:38:56. > :39:03.with you. That is the way things are, I would like to have seen
:39:03. > :39:08.things to go on because it is the same for everybody. David? I have
:39:08. > :39:13.tremendous respect for your point of view, you have been commentating
:39:13. > :39:20.on Formula One since the formation of the Championship. But as a
:39:20. > :39:24.driver there comes a time when the cars are not fit force -- fit for
:39:25. > :39:31.purpose. Those who made a good decision to get out early and say,
:39:31. > :39:36.let's get a time in. It only takes one lap to create the grid. They
:39:36. > :39:44.should reap the benefit of that. But I also think the race director,
:39:44. > :39:47.Charlie Whiting had done the white thing -- right thing. But they
:39:47. > :39:52.should start within six minutes when the red flag is taken away.
:39:53. > :39:57.But it is right not to have the cars running in these conditions
:39:57. > :40:02.because it will lead to a high- speed crash. When they take to the
:40:02. > :40:08.grass, they have no control. Potentially, David in this
:40:08. > :40:14.situation, when the grid will be as it is shown. His qualifying going
:40:14. > :40:19.to start again? In your memory banks Qamar can you remember a time
:40:19. > :40:24.when a qualifying session was not restarted, so Alveston included?
:40:24. > :40:29.Off the top of my head, it goes a bit fuzzy when you ask a question
:40:29. > :40:38.like that. I can remember some terrible conditions. -- silver
:40:38. > :40:46.stunned. This really is bad. You look up into the sky, it is grey,
:40:46. > :40:52.the rain is coming down by the bucketful. There is your man, Lewis
:40:52. > :40:59.Hamilton is second on the grid at the moment? If things stay as they
:40:59. > :41:06.are at the moment, but going with pole position, Sergio Perez has
:41:06. > :41:15.impressed so many times already. As BMW Sabir, they did have a pole
:41:15. > :41:23.position. But Sauber, without the investment from BMW, this will be
:41:23. > :41:27.their first ever pole position. And we could be on to a great story.
:41:27. > :41:32.Perez nearly beat Fernando Alonso and he could be on pole position.
:41:32. > :41:40.am going to eat a slice of humble pie. Last year when it was
:41:40. > :41:44.announced Perez was going to be driving the Sauber, I thought he is
:41:44. > :41:50.another day driver, some Mexican millions behind him. But he has
:41:50. > :41:55.gone incredibly well. We have seen how talented he is, especially in
:41:55. > :42:02.terms of looking after his tyres? am sure he feels he has unfinished
:42:02. > :42:07.business. When he was chasing down Alonso, he probably thinks it was a
:42:07. > :42:13.missed opportunity. We could have uninteresting look at the front
:42:13. > :42:16.grid. Murray Walker, I love to chat to you about Formula One and hear
:42:16. > :42:22.how it is for you coming back to the British Grand Prix. What is it
:42:22. > :42:29.like being back here for you? Silverstone is so much a part of my
:42:29. > :42:37.life. I was at the 1948 British Grand Prix, which was won by Luigi
:42:37. > :42:42.Vella racy in a Maserati. My first ever broadcast was at 1949. I was
:42:42. > :42:46.at the Royal meeting in 1950 when Giuseppe Farina won and I have been
:42:46. > :42:51.here for all of the rest of them. My first love is motorbikes, as you
:42:51. > :43:01.know and there have been some fantastic motorbike meetings, and I
:43:01. > :43:03.
:43:03. > :43:09.loved Silverstone, but I love it more when it is dry. We will be
:43:09. > :43:14.back with you shortly. We have Lee McKenzie and side and Gary Anderson.
:43:14. > :43:18.They are not lucky enough to be in a dry, but hopefully if there are
:43:18. > :43:24.some drivers and team bosses to talk to, we will get an idea of
:43:24. > :43:29.what the atmosphere is like. Eddie, finish your soup. It is magnificent.
:43:29. > :43:35.Tell us what is going on inside the teams at the moment? This is
:43:35. > :43:38.crucial for them. The guys who will do the strategy, they will look at
:43:38. > :43:44.it were they were quick and were they were not. They will be telling
:43:44. > :43:49.the driver, that is stagnant water, you have to miss that. Stay away
:43:49. > :43:56.from the markings. The painter you see his like ice, it is a skating
:43:56. > :44:01.cars hogging the middle of the roads. There is less grit there, a
:44:01. > :44:07.less danger for start we have been given the news it will be about 45
:44:08. > :44:12.minutes until this rain stops. the team thing, we would just get a
:44:12. > :44:16.coffee, or is it constant information? Constant information.
:44:17. > :44:21.They will be thinking how can we move the car further up the grid.
:44:21. > :44:26.People on the brink, people like Paul di Resta will be wanting to
:44:26. > :44:32.get up to where Hulkenberg is, fifth on the grid. Some teams will
:44:32. > :44:37.be saying, leave it as it is. The weather is atrocious, we have done
:44:37. > :44:41.what we needed to do in a proper way, let's declare the grid as it
:44:41. > :44:46.is. I am sure they would love to do that, if you were at Jordan is that
:44:46. > :44:51.what you would be saying? I would be jumping up and down and having a
:44:51. > :44:55.word with Charlie. Saying you cannot possibly do this, less like
:44:56. > :44:59.it off because we have all of the cars in one piece for tomorrow.
:44:59. > :45:05.That is the key, making sure everybody is safe and take the grid
:45:06. > :45:12.for tomorrow. We are struggling out birth. We will see what happens
:45:12. > :45:16.before long. Lots off fans waving at the moment. David, why is a
:45:17. > :45:26.driver would you want to stay in the car? Like wood and you want to
:45:27. > :45:30.
:45:30. > :45:35.stretch your legs and calm yourself he can keep his focus. Personally,
:45:35. > :45:39.I would be out and I would be having a couple of -- a cup of tea,
:45:39. > :45:45.I think, speaking to my engineer. Paul di Resta, he is obviously
:45:45. > :45:50.focused on improving on his current 12th position, as and when and if
:45:50. > :45:54.they do restart this session. is the mindset, is it a case of
:45:54. > :45:59.trying to keep yourself calm, or is it a case of keeping the adrenalin
:45:59. > :46:02.going? DAVID COULTHARD: Driving in the wet
:46:02. > :46:12.is the ultimate example of controlled aggression. In the dry,
:46:12. > :46:12.
:46:12. > :46:16.it is all about attack. In the rain, it is all about absolutely small
:46:16. > :46:23.inputs, small inputs on the throttle, there is no traction
:46:23. > :46:33.control of course. Small inputs on the brake pressure. Physically, you
:46:33. > :46:33.
:46:34. > :46:37.do not have the high G-forces in the wet, but you are tense, so
:46:37. > :46:41.everything gets fatigued, your hips and your torso, and it puts a lot
:46:42. > :46:51.more pressure on you. One man who's not feeling too much pressure right
:46:52. > :46:56.
:46:56. > :47:04.now is Jude Law and friends. He is with the Lotus team. If I can come
:47:04. > :47:13.back to you, Murray walker, and a stew about the Lotus team this year,
:47:13. > :47:18.particularly Romain Grosjean... am one of the old school, and for
:47:18. > :47:24.me, Lotus died with Colin Chapman. But the Lotus name is still going.
:47:24. > :47:29.They are doing an absolutely fabulous job. The Team Principal
:47:29. > :47:35.has made some courageous decisions, one of which was to bring Romain
:47:36. > :47:39.Grosjean back into Formula 1. We all know that after he replaced
:47:39. > :47:44.Nelson Piquet Jnr after the problems that they had, that he
:47:44. > :47:50.himself had problems and had to go back to GP2. And it was a
:47:50. > :47:55.calculated risk, which has worked out wonderfully well. France
:47:55. > :47:59.desperately needs some good Grand Prix drivers, to get its place back
:47:59. > :48:05.in the Grand Prix firmament. Let's remember that Grand Prix racing
:48:05. > :48:09.actually started in France. So, Romain Grosjean doing as well as he
:48:09. > :48:13.is is a very significant factor. He is one of the people who could win
:48:13. > :48:17.a Grand Prix this year that has not yet done so. Heaven knows how many
:48:17. > :48:21.there will be, perhaps 10 winners by the end of the season. We are
:48:21. > :48:26.all trying to work out why Jude Law is allowed inside the pit lane when
:48:26. > :48:31.we are banned from going in once decision has started. I'm sure he
:48:31. > :48:36.has got special dispensation for being good-looking or something.
:48:36. > :48:42.EDDIE JORDAN: Actually, I know him as Watson, not as Jude Law, because
:48:42. > :48:49.of the Sherlock Holmes story, which has made him into a megastar.
:48:49. > :48:52.best not to mention Alfie, probably. We mention Romain Grosjean, he will
:48:52. > :48:57.be sitting in his car, working out what to do - have you been
:48:57. > :49:02.impressed by the way he has got on with Kimi Raikkonen? If you
:49:02. > :49:09.remember, in Valencia, I apologised to the boss of the team, because I
:49:09. > :49:13.did not think that Grosjean was worthy of a second chance. How
:49:13. > :49:18.wrong I was. This guy has turned the light switch on, and it is
:49:18. > :49:23.fantastic to see. Bruno Senna is also hoping to impress this weekend,
:49:23. > :49:29.after a couple of difficult races. He has come out of the garage to
:49:29. > :49:34.speak to our lovely Lee McKenzie. How wet is it? It is a glamorous
:49:34. > :49:40.life, as you can tell. How difficult work things out there for
:49:40. > :49:45.you? It is difficult. We made the mistake of going out on the inters.
:49:45. > :49:49.We got stuck behind a slower cars on the full wets. I could not get a
:49:49. > :49:53.lap with the inters, and when we put the full wets on, it was too
:49:53. > :49:57.late. It is very frustrating. But we will see what happens with the
:49:57. > :50:03.rain, and hopefully when we restart, the conditions will be competitive.
:50:03. > :50:13.We saw the effects of what the rain can do yesterday, and you had a bit
:50:13. > :50:21.of a big off. How difficult is it? David was sale, these cars are not
:50:21. > :50:26.boats, so was it really dangerous? It was starting to get a bit
:50:26. > :50:32.dangerous, especially around Becketts. You could see Fernando
:50:32. > :50:39.and Massa going off, so I think it is the right way to do it. But
:50:39. > :50:42.unfortunately for us, we had not put a lap time in yet. I am going
:50:42. > :50:47.to try to give you these headphones, so that David Coulthard can speak
:50:47. > :50:56.to you. You will still be attached to me, so don't walk away, for
:50:56. > :51:01.heaven's sake. DAVID COULTHARD: Can you hear me?
:51:01. > :51:06.can hear you. You are apparently attached to Lee, so that's no
:51:06. > :51:10.hardship. You have got at least 10 minutes, we're hearing, so you do
:51:10. > :51:16.not need to worry. Just picking up on what Lee said, I would love it
:51:16. > :51:20.if you could explain why it is so difficult in these conditions. Most
:51:20. > :51:25.people can probably relate to aquaplaning, if they have been out
:51:25. > :51:30.on a motorway, but why do these Formula 1 cars just snap away? We
:51:30. > :51:36.have seen world champions disappearing off the racetrack.
:51:36. > :51:38.is because we run a very low ride height. As the tyres are
:51:39. > :51:44.aquaplaning, we are also aquaplaning with the bottom of the
:51:45. > :51:49.car. It is a bit like a hull. It will go wherever it wants.
:51:49. > :51:53.Especially at high speeds, you just losing the downforce as well. So,
:51:53. > :51:57.everything accumulates, and you end up having a big off, like I had
:51:57. > :52:02.yesterday. Fernando and Felipe Massa have been having the same
:52:02. > :52:07.problem. It is very tough in these conditions. Hopefully we can get
:52:07. > :52:16.back onto the track and do some more laps when the conditions are
:52:16. > :52:21.better. But the conditions are the same for everybody. If it is too
:52:21. > :52:26.dangerous, park the car. We should not be held in suspense for another
:52:26. > :52:30.six minutes, surely, it should have either been stopped or allowed to
:52:30. > :52:34.fizzle out and finish the session and make that the qualifying grid?
:52:34. > :52:38.The problem is that we had a lot of cars going off the track, and then
:52:38. > :52:42.you end up with a red flag for a crash. There is no point continuing
:52:42. > :52:47.if you have got more than four or five cars going off the track, so I
:52:47. > :52:52.think it is the right decision. Hopefully it is going to get better.
:52:52. > :52:57.JAKE HUMPHREY: Before we let you go, Bruno, I would love you to say
:52:57. > :53:00.hello to Murray walker, up in the commentary box, who of course for
:53:00. > :53:05.so many years was the voice of the success of your uncle in Formula 1.
:53:05. > :53:09.Murray, I am sure you would like to say hello was well. Good to hear
:53:09. > :53:14.from you, Murray, and hopefully we will meet up and talk about some
:53:15. > :53:20.good moments in the near future. Indeed, yes. You have had a very
:53:20. > :53:26.difficult start to your career, you lost about 10 years through not
:53:26. > :53:29.being able to do karting, like most people do, but you are now with an
:53:29. > :53:34.absolutely top team - how does it feel in comparison with the ones
:53:34. > :53:38.you have been in in the past? course, it is a great privilege to
:53:38. > :53:44.be with Williams, especially in a year in which they have recovered
:53:44. > :53:47.so well from last year. It is good that you know whenever you come to
:53:47. > :53:52.a track that you will have the chance to score points, and to be
:53:52. > :53:56.in the top five sometimes. Although it sounds like a dream, this year
:53:56. > :54:02.is a bit of a nightmare, with how close the grid is. You make one
:54:02. > :54:07.mistake, and you can be losing 10 positions this year. So it is a
:54:07. > :54:10.tough time in Formula 1, but that is how you raise your game. I am
:54:11. > :54:16.really glad I am here. Hopefully I will have some good races at the
:54:16. > :54:25.end of the season. Thank you very much for joining us, Bruno. Just
:54:25. > :54:30.behind us, we can see, this is what is happening, and you can see the
:54:30. > :54:35.fans and the marshals and you can see the clock just stuck at six
:54:35. > :54:41.minutes, 19 seconds. But still smiles on people's faces. Eddie and
:54:41. > :54:46.myself are doing our best to keep dry and warm. Thanks for ordering
:54:46. > :54:51.the coffee for me. Not that we want to make you feel bad, Gary Anderson,
:54:51. > :54:55.out in the rain. How is it going? It is going pretty good, it is
:54:55. > :55:03.still raining, but not nearly as heavily as it was. But there will
:55:03. > :55:07.be some big puddles around. By but with six minutes, 19 seconds to go,
:55:07. > :55:13.in reality, if you get out of the pit lane pretty early, that will
:55:13. > :55:18.allow you to do three times laps. So you have got to risk more to put
:55:18. > :55:22.the laps in then you were risking before, because the track will be a
:55:22. > :55:26.total unknown. You will have to find all of those puddles again.
:55:26. > :55:31.They are going to be bigger. I am not a great believer of what has
:55:31. > :55:39.happened here at all. Can you give us an idea, Gary, when you were in
:55:39. > :55:44.the Jordan team, what would be the atmosphere in Jordan if this
:55:44. > :55:49.decision had been made, and we were back in 2001, and you were fighting
:55:50. > :55:52.for victories or points? Well, the decisions you make as a team are
:55:52. > :55:58.the things that you pay the price fall. Ferrari made the wrong
:55:58. > :56:01.decision, and are suffering the consequences of it. Williams made
:56:01. > :56:05.the wrong decision. So they are suffering the consequences as well.
:56:05. > :56:10.But for the teams that have made a good decision, and hopefully we
:56:10. > :56:13.would have been one of them, Jordan, that is what it is about. If there
:56:13. > :56:17.is a red flag because of an accident or somebody has gone off,
:56:17. > :56:22.I fully understand that. But whenever you have a limited session
:56:22. > :56:25.time, I don't think you can interfere with the outcome of it.
:56:25. > :56:29.And this is what it is, it is an interference with the outcome of
:56:29. > :56:33.the session. So, in the future, if it looks as though the rain is
:56:33. > :56:38.getting heavier, why even bother going out on the track, why not
:56:38. > :56:44.just park up, knowing that somebody will throw a red flag up? It is so
:56:44. > :56:51.inconsistent. The teams are there to make good decisions and bad
:56:51. > :56:56.decisions. Gary, we have just been seeing some shots from the
:56:56. > :57:00.commentary box, there is quite a lot of work going on on the car at
:57:00. > :57:04.Lotus, and we are not in parc ferme conditions yet, so the teams to
:57:04. > :57:11.have an opportunity to change the set up, so how does that affect
:57:11. > :57:18.their approach? I am a bit surprised about that. When you have
:57:18. > :57:23.got parc ferme, it starts at the beginning of qualifying. You can
:57:23. > :57:27.change electronics or the front wing angles, wheels and tyres, but
:57:27. > :57:32.the rest of it should be not able to be worked on. You can work on it
:57:32. > :57:35.as long as you're not putting different parts on the car. We know
:57:35. > :57:39.that Kimi Raikkonen was talking earlier on about having a problem
:57:39. > :57:44.with KERS. I don't know whether they are working on that. I cannot
:57:44. > :57:49.see. It is strange. The parc ferme rules start at the beginning of the
:57:49. > :57:57.qualifying session, the minute you drive out of the pit lane.
:57:57. > :58:02.EDDIE JORDAN: If you look at where Rosberg is currently, third on the
:58:02. > :58:05.grid - was he so lucky to make it through even, because had it not
:58:05. > :58:12.been for a tardy lap from Jenson Button, he would not even have made
:58:12. > :58:19.it through, so why take away what he did, which was a great job?
:58:19. > :58:24.That's exactly right, Eddie. When you're a small team, and we saw
:58:24. > :58:29.Kovalainen putting on the slick tyres, they were the teams that
:58:29. > :58:32.needed to take that gamble. If possible, it is the teams at the
:58:32. > :58:39.back that you want to see doing something different to get up at
:58:39. > :58:42.the front. I watched Sauber, and they had done a good lap term, they
:58:43. > :58:46.knew, as long as anybody else did not put on the slick tyres, they
:58:46. > :58:50.would not have to worry. Why would a team which is potentially at the
:58:50. > :58:57.front take those risks? I can understand completely a team at the
:58:57. > :59:05.back taking those risks. But sometimes, the decisions which are
:59:05. > :59:15.made in the pit lane now, I find them a bit illogical. We are joined
:59:15. > :59:21.now by Christian Horner, fresh from the pit wall. What do you know
:59:21. > :59:24.about where we might be able to get racing again? They are saying that
:59:25. > :59:29.this rain could go on for about an hour. Hopefully after that it will
:59:29. > :59:33.start to lift. But there is so much surface water, and Silverstone is
:59:33. > :59:42.not great for aquaplaning, with the corners being so quick, that's the
:59:42. > :59:44.major problem, we need to get rid of the surface water. Actually,
:59:44. > :59:51.those were very high quality police officers, I would have been happy
:59:51. > :59:57.to go to jail with them. Never mind. Sue Key eighth and tenth on the
:59:57. > :00:04.grid, surely you would want to continue with this, but surely you
:00:04. > :00:07.have to have some thought for people like Hamilton, Rosberg and
:00:07. > :00:17.Perez - they have done the job, so this should be declared as the
:00:17. > :00:21.
:00:21. > :00:25.final grid position, don't you in Japan a few years ago qualifying
:00:26. > :00:31.was run on Sunday morning, if the weather was so bad. Hopefully it
:00:31. > :00:36.won't come to that. It has been a matter of survival. We navigated a
:00:36. > :00:43.way through the first session. The circuit has deteriorated and it is
:00:43. > :00:47.a matter of surviving those sessions. Daniel Ricciardo and
:00:47. > :00:52.Jean-Eric Vergne are doing a great job. If you are wondering what
:00:52. > :00:57.Christian is looking at when he turns around. If you are watching
:00:57. > :01:01.this on the TV, you don't have access to this. This is what the
:01:01. > :01:06.teams have on the pit wall. How much information can you glean from
:01:06. > :01:12.this as a team? We have the three columns for the different sectors.
:01:12. > :01:17.The circuit is split up into three sectors. Anything that goes green
:01:17. > :01:23.is a personal best. Anything that is purple is good because it is
:01:23. > :01:29.quickest over all. We can see how a lap time is progressing. Whether
:01:29. > :01:34.you are quicker than a competitor. The middle sector has got Becketts,
:01:34. > :01:39.another crucial sector. It gives you an overview of were your

:01:43. > :01:49.You said a similar set of circumstances. Actually it wasn't,
:01:49. > :01:54.we did not run at all on the Saturday, we did not have any times
:01:54. > :01:58.for any one. We have half the session here. It would be perfectly
:01:58. > :02:03.OK to declare that the grid. don't think in a sporting race they
:02:03. > :02:10.can do that. The session has not finished. I would have to read of
:02:10. > :02:15.the regulations or speak to Jonathan, our team manager. I know
:02:15. > :02:21.you don't know the regulations! If it was declared a result now, I'm
:02:21. > :02:26.not sure if they wouldn't go with car number. That is in the sporting
:02:26. > :02:31.regulations as well. We want to see it restarted and even if it was run
:02:31. > :02:39.tomorrow if it were dry, that would be preferable to anything else.
:02:39. > :02:44.Could it be started under the safety car? You cannot qualify
:02:44. > :02:49.under the safety car, Eddie. They have already qualified. You are
:02:49. > :02:53.getting very confusing now. question we have been asking is why
:02:53. > :02:56.do we need a red flag? If the circuit becomes waterlogged you
:02:56. > :03:01.slowdown and drive to the conditions. If you are better than
:03:01. > :03:07.Ferrari and McLaren and overcoming the battle on the track, you
:03:07. > :03:14.deserve to be on pole position. If you choose it is not safe, you can
:03:14. > :03:18.bring your cars in? These cars are only 500 or so kilos. The amount of
:03:18. > :03:24.standing water they get lifted up, on the Strait of going through some
:03:24. > :03:29.of the corners. They are so light. They are floating on the surface
:03:29. > :03:35.and they lose control. We saw Fernando Alonso, very lucky to get
:03:35. > :03:39.a way with an incident and Felipe Massa. It is too dangerous. If you
:03:39. > :03:45.allow the drivers to go out and qualified they will want to go for
:03:45. > :03:52.it. We said to both their drivers, take it easy when the weather came
:03:52. > :03:57.down. We want to make sure the cars are also in one piece. We you get
:03:57. > :04:01.Jonathan Steele e-mail Eddie a copy of the sporting regulations.
:04:01. > :04:10.would rather he didn't so, I don't want to see them. He wouldn't
:04:10. > :04:15.follow them anyway. We have heard from Christian, Gary and Eddie as
:04:15. > :04:22.to why this session should be on. Let's hear from Charlie Whiting,
:04:22. > :04:28.the race director himself. If you could give me a status of
:04:28. > :04:33.date? It looks like the rain should stop at about 2:45pm. We are
:04:33. > :04:39.clearing the water away and we will keep doing that until it stops and
:04:39. > :04:43.do our best to make sure it is drivable quickly after that. Tell
:04:43. > :04:48.me what you're looking for out there so it is ready? The main
:04:48. > :04:53.thing is to have no standing water where cars can aquaplaned. Those
:04:53. > :04:59.are the worst conditions. How long do you anticipate before we get
:04:59. > :05:03.going again? It would be an estimates but around about 3pm with
:05:03. > :05:11.any luck if the weather forecast is accurate. It should be around that
:05:11. > :05:15.time. That was provided to us by Formula One Management. 3pm,
:05:15. > :05:19.Charlie Whiting thinks the cars might be able to go out there and
:05:19. > :05:23.think about completing this qualifying session. Lewis Hamilton
:05:23. > :05:26.has such fond memories of this circuit in the wet. His second
:05:26. > :05:32.season in Formula One, the year when he was crowned Formula One
:05:32. > :05:36.champion. He came here and drove fantastically. Wonderful shots of
:05:36. > :05:42.him emerging through the spray on his way to victory. Sadly he will
:05:42. > :05:46.market a chance to go out in the next 45 minutes. Bruno Senna said
:05:46. > :05:50.he thinks they need to go on and gets on with it because he does not
:05:50. > :05:55.want this session to be declared because he has not set a time and
:05:55. > :05:59.it would penalise him if they decided to declare the session. You
:05:59. > :06:05.see Frank Williams in the garage with him? I can understand that but
:06:06. > :06:10.my thoughts are with the other, 17 Total drivers have made it through.
:06:10. > :06:16.He was the one he decided not to put in a time. Maybe he was saving
:06:16. > :06:20.tyres? Why should he have the benefit as someone who has gone out,
:06:21. > :06:26.please the fans and done an honourable situation. I don't know
:06:26. > :06:35.why La Charette did not do that lap, he should have done. The race
:06:35. > :06:40.director sends out a safety car and they drive around. -- Bruno Senna.
:06:40. > :06:44.We heard from Bruno Senna describing what it is like to drive
:06:44. > :06:48.a car in these conditions of people at home will be saying we have had
:06:48. > :06:54.flash floods across the country, I drove to the supermarket and
:06:54. > :07:00.through a large puddle with no problem. Why is it harder in a
:07:00. > :07:04.Formula One car? He has his nice window wipers removing the water
:07:04. > :07:10.from the windscreen. Not something I would recommend, but if somebody
:07:10. > :07:14.has not had their window wipers working in a road car, you realise
:07:14. > :07:22.visibility is an issue. You cannot see where there is changes in
:07:22. > :07:28.colour to indicate whether puddles are. There is a legend of Formula
:07:28. > :07:33.One. He has had several of his cars winning a round this racetrack. It
:07:33. > :07:39.is difficult in the Grand Prix car when it is light. Look at the
:07:39. > :07:44.clearance under the safety car. The tyres are dispersing the water and
:07:45. > :07:50.you have two tons of car pushing the compact down into the road.
:07:50. > :07:55.When you have a car weighing 600 kilos slipping and sliding. We get
:07:55. > :08:02.in image of them sliding. Underneath the car, there is a gap
:08:02. > :08:05.at both sides of word the plank is. There is not a lot of standing
:08:05. > :08:12.water, but the issue of the driver has is the downforce coming off the
:08:12. > :08:17.car. Aircraft generates lift and pulls it up into the sky. The wings
:08:17. > :08:21.on these cars generate downforce and push it into the racetrack.
:08:21. > :08:26.When you are running below 60 kilometres an hour, as used see-
:08:26. > :08:30.through Club corner, they have very little load on the car and there is
:08:30. > :08:37.nothing pushing the tie into the surface and generating the grip
:08:37. > :08:41.necessary. -- the tyre. If anyone has any doubt within the drivers
:08:41. > :08:45.capabilities, Michael Schumacher has been off the track twice. He
:08:45. > :08:49.was known as the rain master and then we see Timo Glock coming out
:08:49. > :08:59.of the last section of Club corner building a power slide and runs out
:08:59. > :09:04.on to the kerb. This was the next lap. He decided to push it a bit
:09:04. > :09:09.more and the rain was coming down. He lost control. That is what
:09:09. > :09:13.brought out the yellow flags. He runs for the line at the chequered
:09:13. > :09:19.flag. At this point in the session there was hardly any standing water.
:09:19. > :09:24.I know it is disappointing for the fans, but there is no question,
:09:24. > :09:29.just because you can nip to the shops in your road car. We are not
:09:29. > :09:33.comparing apples with apples. It is the British Grand Prix. But the
:09:33. > :09:39.good news is it looks like the rain is backing off. From our commentary
:09:39. > :09:44.box we can see the crowd doing a Mexican wave. Maybe we should call
:09:44. > :09:48.it a Silverstone wave? Enthusiasm is still there with the fans.
:09:48. > :09:54.Murray Walker, you have commented on some amazing moments over the
:09:54. > :09:58.years, do you think the sport has become too risky avert? Especially
:09:58. > :10:02.in Canada when Jenson Button had that wonderful win when people felt
:10:02. > :10:06.the safety car stayed out too long and the sport did not give the
:10:07. > :10:13.drivers the chance to test their skills in the rain? Do you think,
:10:13. > :10:21.compared to the 60s, 70s and 80s they are making decisions at it is
:10:21. > :10:24.safely? It is terribly difficult to know where to draw the line. In the
:10:24. > :10:30.early days of Formula One one-for- five people were killed every year.
:10:30. > :10:35.The attitude then was, the throttle works both ways, if you cannot take
:10:35. > :10:43.the heat, take out a big kitchen. I think Jackie Stuart lost over 30 of
:10:43. > :10:47.his personal friends. Formula One was just too dangerous. -- stay out
:10:47. > :10:53.of the kitchen. Improvements were made, but the catalyst was the
:10:53. > :10:58.appalling death of Ayrton Senna at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994.
:10:58. > :11:03.Bahar this commentary job of my life, having to talk through that.
:11:03. > :11:07.That is when Max Mosley, he was then in charge of the FIA, decided
:11:07. > :11:13.something drastic had to be done and some stringent, new regulations
:11:13. > :11:19.were brought in to improve safety. It is a sport, you don't expect to
:11:19. > :11:24.go out and get killed doing it. But if you talk to Stirling Moss, he
:11:24. > :11:27.will say it can be to say. He will say to you, in my day there was
:11:27. > :11:33.never any question of overlapping wheels with people or banging
:11:33. > :11:39.wheels with people. You knew the result probably would be terminal.
:11:39. > :11:43.Thanks very much. We can go down to the paddock and the Mackenzie is
:11:43. > :11:48.with Bernie Ecclestone. He is squashing me with the
:11:48. > :11:55.umbrella. He promised me he would hold the umbrella. What is
:11:55. > :12:01.happening? With what? The cars, when will they be out on track?
:12:01. > :12:04.should think in about half-an-hour. What have you made of what has
:12:04. > :12:11.happened at Silverstone over the last 24 hours, a lot of fans
:12:11. > :12:14.unhappy? I feel sorry for the fans. You cannot blame anybody, it is the
:12:15. > :12:19.weather. There wouldn't have been any problem with the car parking if
:12:19. > :12:22.it had not have reigned. So you think we will get the cars back out
:12:22. > :12:32.in 30 minutes, would you make any predictions are as to what will
:12:32. > :12:40.happen this weekend? Unpredictable. Shall I wore cute to your door?
:12:40. > :12:50.can have the umbrella. In a minute. I am going this way. Can I walk you
:12:50. > :12:55.
:12:56. > :12:58.to your door. Is this your door? J HUMPHREYS: can Bernie Ecclestone
:12:59. > :13:07.show has or where egos when he is wet?
:13:07. > :13:10.Can you show us your home? I think that is no, or maybe he said come
:13:10. > :13:20.back and a couple of minutes without the camera, but I doubt
:13:20. > :13:26.that. Please do start sending us messages on Twitter. We would love
:13:26. > :13:32.to share some of your messages. I have had a text from Chris Evans
:13:32. > :13:37.saying get the cars down to Ascot, it is nice and sunny. Chris, we
:13:37. > :13:40.would have loved to have had to here. Everybody realises what a
:13:40. > :13:45.find you are motor-racing and all of those wonderful Ferrari
:13:45. > :13:50.collections you have got. Let's talk about Bernie Ecclestone as he
:13:50. > :13:58.goes off into the motor home nobody is allowed into. I have been in
:13:58. > :14:04.there. Usually he is chastising me for something I shouldn't have said.
:14:04. > :14:09.He gets frustrated when you have sessions like this? He once the
:14:09. > :14:14.fans to be able to see motor racing when they expect to see it? He will
:14:15. > :14:19.be furious because he is such a stickler for occasions. We see how
:14:20. > :14:24.the trucks are lined up brilliantly. He is the past master of making
:14:24. > :14:29.everything stylish and he has brought a new level of Formula One
:14:29. > :14:33.to the people. He will be furious the weather has got in the wake.
:14:33. > :14:38.The weather is not predictable. But that is what you get to hear. He
:14:38. > :14:43.understands. You feel sorry for the circuit. Bernie Ecclestone has been
:14:43. > :14:49.tough on Silverstone over the years, he has made them work hard on his
:14:49. > :14:53.Grand Prix. He has, and I am a member of the BRDC, and sometimes I
:14:53. > :14:59.have not agreed with the comments he has come out with. I think he
:14:59. > :15:03.has been too tough, but we look at the new wing and I'm wouldn't think
:15:03. > :15:10.it would be there without the pressure of Bernie Ecclestone. He
:15:10. > :15:15.is a great headmaster. He is including Silverstone, this is what
:15:15. > :15:19.we expect. Put it on to the very best and be proud of what you're
:15:19. > :15:25.doing for Britain. Well done to him because he points the finger and
:15:25. > :15:31.gets it done. Don't feel sorry they him, it is normally more glamourous
:15:31. > :15:34.than this. Sebastian Vettel sitting outside his garage. I think he is
:15:34. > :15:43.listening to team radio rather than music finding out what the latest
:15:43. > :15:48.is. This is the latest. The rain is getting heavier. We have just had a
:15:48. > :15:52.message from the Abu Dhabi circuit, saying send the cars here. Plenty
:15:52. > :15:57.of view on Twitter. "am either only one who gets a lump in my throat
:15:57. > :16:03.when I hear Murray Walker talking about Formula One. What a great
:16:04. > :16:13.man." "I would like to see qualifying restarted and reset. It
:16:14. > :16:14.
:16:14. > :16:24.should be fair". "I would like the Mexican wave televised". We will do
:16:24. > :16:28.
:16:28. > :16:34.what we can. Lots are messages coming through from the pit lanes.
:16:34. > :16:42.This was from Henry"stop favouring the big teams and get this session
:16:42. > :16:49.going". I support that. Before example people are saying why give
:16:49. > :16:59.Alonso - she has 20 points. We saw what he was able to do from 11th
:16:59. > :17:05.
:17:05. > :17:09.the qualifying session from the German MotoGP, 250 brake horse
:17:09. > :17:14.power bike's in torrential rain. There you go! Most of you are
:17:14. > :17:17.telling us that it is sunny where you are. We're going to be
:17:17. > :17:27.disappearing from the BBC HD Channel in just a couple of minutes,
:17:27. > :17:27.
:17:27. > :18:36.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 68 seconds
:18:36. > :18:41.but we will be continuing on BBC standing around. And they will have
:18:41. > :18:48.discussed the car, any set-up changes they are allowed in these
:18:48. > :18:52.sessions. Then you just have to get back in there and deliver. Nico
:18:52. > :18:59.Rosberg standing there. And the vice-president of motor sport for
:18:59. > :19:04.Mercedes Benz. Rosberg with his ear phones in. Slightly bizarre.
:19:04. > :19:14.hope this will be a qualifying session. If you are watching us on
:19:14. > :19:16.
:19:16. > :19:19.the IHD channel, that it will continue on BBC Two. For those of
:19:19. > :19:24.you on BBC Two already, that is Nico Rosberg doing his best to keep
:19:24. > :19:30.the crowd happy. Plenty of people saying they would like Sergio Perez
:19:30. > :19:35.the man to stay at the front. Lewis Hamilton is not far behind him.
:19:35. > :19:39.Half a second behind him, sitting second at the moment. Let's hear
:19:39. > :19:43.from Jonathan Beale with Lee McKenzie.
:19:43. > :19:49.Jonathan, the most exciting thing has been a Mexican wave? I have
:19:49. > :19:54.never seen that. It is a lively crowd here at Silverstone. They
:19:54. > :20:00.have been calling the teams out one by one insisting they do the
:20:00. > :20:06.Mexican wave. The tell us about what has been happening so far. A
:20:06. > :20:11.difficult David Jenson Button? disappointing. He went out on the
:20:11. > :20:15.intermediate tier on Q1. If he never got a chance to warm up.
:20:15. > :20:20.Tried a difference for a variety of things to get him going but it
:20:20. > :20:30.never happened. We brought him into put the new set on and try to
:20:30. > :20:33.
:20:33. > :20:39.conserve. We had a yellow flag in the last sector. He is quite
:20:39. > :20:45.philosophical. He is massively disappointed. It things carry on,
:20:45. > :20:51.you might have Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton starting second
:20:51. > :20:56.tomorrow. Do you think because it will go out on track today? I do.
:20:56. > :21:00.According to our screens and the FIA we should go in about 15
:21:00. > :21:04.minutes. Or rather the weather should clear. But we do have a lot
:21:04. > :21:10.of standing water and it does not run like rivers as it does in
:21:10. > :21:16.Brazil. I am confident we will get going again. How do you handle
:21:16. > :21:22.that? Do you wait until other cars go out? You only have six minutes
:21:22. > :21:25.and you have to go out and grin and bear it. Hamilton likes this stuff.
:21:25. > :21:33.Although it is unpredictable he fancies his chances against that
:21:33. > :21:37.environment. I will let you go back out to your Mexican wave.
:21:37. > :21:42.Mexican wave is the talking point at the moment. Lots of messages
:21:42. > :21:47.asking can we get a drivers and Mexican wave. I am not too sure
:21:47. > :21:52.you'll get back today. Keep an eye on what is happening in the garages.
:21:52. > :21:59.We saw a small glimpse in the Lotus garage. A tremendous amount of work.
:21:59. > :22:02.I know you are down there at the moment, what is going on? McCann
:22:02. > :22:09.makes telling Kimi Raikkonen he can move the brake balance. They have
:22:09. > :22:14.taken the floor of the car off and they are looking at wiring damage.
:22:14. > :22:19.They will change the wiring hoping they can fix it because they cannot
:22:19. > :22:24.see any other problem. They are allowed to do that because they are
:22:24. > :22:34.replacing it with the same part. The scrutiny will be there watching
:22:34. > :22:38.
:22:38. > :22:45.to make sure nothing is changed on the car. The car is worth around
:22:45. > :22:52.four-tenths of a second. The rain is coming down again and the
:22:52. > :22:59.session wore drag its feet. It is worse conditions now than when they
:22:59. > :23:02.actually put the red flag out. Fraser has said "all this talk
:23:02. > :23:08.about the plank under the car meaning the car are just
:23:08. > :23:13.aquaplaning, can't they just are just the right height"? Every team
:23:13. > :23:17.has that option. You get better aerodynamics performance out of the
:23:17. > :23:27.car the closer to the ground it is. The car goes round the corners
:23:27. > :23:28.
:23:28. > :23:34.faster. The dry weather tyres are slick. But I amateur of the front
:23:34. > :23:39.tyre is bigger. When you get there were tier on it goes up again by
:23:39. > :23:44.another four mm. It is catered for within the tyres. But not as far as
:23:44. > :23:49.big puddles our concern. If the driver does not like driving these
:23:49. > :23:53.conditions, they can always come in. If the team can make a wet-weather
:23:53. > :24:03.compromise set up they would make the car hire. It does not mean
:24:03. > :24:04.
:24:04. > :24:06.every team in the pit lane has wet weather set up. Tomorrow could be a
:24:06. > :24:10.new date. So what will they do? Do two laps and two people fly off the
:24:10. > :24:17.road and a red flag the race? of work going on in the Lotus
:24:17. > :24:27.garage but no such luxuries for Mercedes. They are relaxing
:24:27. > :24:39.
:24:39. > :24:44.themselves at the moment. Ross has back out again, because obviously
:24:44. > :24:47.one of our cars has not qualified to get through yet. The forecast is
:24:47. > :24:51.that it should be stopping within the next 20 minutes, and then we
:24:51. > :24:55.will wait for it to dry out. long do you think we will have to
:24:55. > :25:00.wait? We're hearing that it does not dry up as quickly as it might
:25:00. > :25:04.in a hot climate. The important thing is that we cannot have too
:25:04. > :25:14.much standing water. I would anticipate that it will be three-
:25:14. > :25:30.
:25:30. > :25:38.quarters of an hour at least. The it is a bit unfair on those who
:25:38. > :25:43.have got caught out by the weather. But I have been here before, where
:25:43. > :25:47.we have had some pretty nasty incidents, not just here on the
:25:47. > :25:53.tracks, and we want to avoid that. We saw Michael Schumacher's
:25:53. > :25:59.spinning as well. It appeared it was getting a bit too much. Yes,
:25:59. > :26:02.obviously you can voluntarily stop, but we would not be able to have Q3,
:26:02. > :26:06.because nobody would be able to go out in those conditions, so I think
:26:06. > :26:14.it was a sensible decision. Thank you very much for your time. No
:26:14. > :26:20.more Mexican waves, hopefully a bit more running. That's what we want.
:26:20. > :26:25.Let's go up to the commentary box, you can see Nick Hamilton, such a
:26:25. > :26:30.good lad, always with a big smile on his face. Up in the commentary
:26:30. > :26:33.box, it is getting to the point where we just want to see racing.
:26:33. > :26:37.All of the Mexican waves in the world are a fantastic, but there is
:26:38. > :26:42.a palpable frustration down here now. It has gone from being a bit
:26:42. > :26:46.of good old British fun to that not being the case.
:26:46. > :26:50.BEN EDWARDS: Yes, the crowd are doing a fantastic job of keeping
:26:50. > :26:54.themselves entertained, but that is just one small section of the crowd.
:26:54. > :26:57.There are thousands of people over the rest of the circuit who are
:26:57. > :27:02.seem absolutely nothing. They do not get to see the pits, so you
:27:02. > :27:12.have to fill for them. At least the guys just opposite the pits, they
:27:12. > :27:18.
:27:18. > :27:24.do have a cover on the grandstand. DAVID COULTHARD: Yes, as you make
:27:24. > :27:29.your way up through the staircase of a racing team, and get into the
:27:29. > :27:33.management, that is your patch. The only saving grace for those around
:27:33. > :27:37.the back of the circuit of course is the large-screen televisions, so
:27:37. > :27:39.they will be seeing what we are seeing right now. But of course
:27:39. > :27:43.they will not be getting the feedback from the drivers and the
:27:43. > :27:48.teams in the pit lanes. But I think we have to just put to one side any
:27:48. > :27:52.frustration. We all understand how the weather works. There's many a
:27:52. > :27:57.day when we plan something with the family, and nature scuppers that.
:27:57. > :28:02.Nature is stronger than human desire, so we have to put up with
:28:03. > :28:07.it. I have been looking on Twitter, and the amount of people saying,
:28:07. > :28:12.welcome back, Murray Walker. I think you should reward them with a
:28:12. > :28:16.few words. Well, what can you do about the weather? We have all been
:28:17. > :28:21.in this situation before many times. We have had to wait for it to clear
:28:21. > :28:25.up, and it has cleared up. The decision has been made to stop the
:28:25. > :28:31.action, you may agree with it or not. I have been longing to tell
:28:31. > :28:35.the story. When I was watching Lee talking to Bernie Ecclestone, as
:28:35. > :28:45.she tried to get into the motor home, it reminded me about years
:28:45. > :28:50.ago, how we used to call it the Kremlin, the FIA motor home. I
:28:50. > :28:55.managed to get into it, and I found that insight, it was a whole lot of
:28:55. > :28:58.subdivided areas. They did not seem to be anybody about. I said,
:28:58. > :29:04.anybody here? And Bernie Ecclestone's voice came from the
:29:04. > :29:09.back and said, it depends who wants to know. I thought that was typical
:29:09. > :29:13.of Bernie Ecclestone! People think he is a very hard man, and he is a
:29:14. > :29:17.tough businessman, no doubt about it, but he is a racer at heart,
:29:17. > :29:20.with a highly-developed sense of humour.
:29:20. > :29:23.DAVID COULTHARD: He seems to be a man of few words when interviewed,
:29:24. > :29:30.but that is not the case when you're with him, so do you think
:29:30. > :29:33.that is just his poker face for the TV stations? Well, I do know that
:29:33. > :29:38.Bernie is an extraordinarily difficult man to interview, a man
:29:38. > :29:44.of few words, as we just saw. But by golly, you have got to keep your
:29:44. > :29:50.wits about you, he has got a razor- sharp mind, the sharpest of anybody
:29:50. > :29:54.I ever knew, with the possible exception of Max Mosley. And when
:29:54. > :30:01.they worked together, you knew you were up against a very formidable
:30:01. > :30:05.duo of people. They shake Formula 1 as it is now. When Formula 1 began,
:30:05. > :30:09.you never really knew whether all of the teams were going to turn up.
:30:09. > :30:11.It was when Bernie Ecclestone became a team owner, with Brabham,
:30:12. > :30:16.that he realised that the team owners were thinking of themselves
:30:16. > :30:19.and not the sport as a whole, and he pulled them all together, add a
:30:19. > :30:25.tease him that has made Formula 1 but it is.
:30:25. > :30:30.BEN EDWARDS: Murray, we have had an amazing start of the season - what
:30:30. > :30:36.is your opinion? You have seen Formula 1 over the years - are we
:30:36. > :30:43.in a golden period? I used to say, until recently, the 1980s were the
:30:43. > :30:47.golden era for me, because we had Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet,
:30:47. > :30:56.Senna, Prost and Schumacher racing against each other. But I think we
:30:56. > :31:04.are in a golden era now, we have never had anything like this before.
:31:04. > :31:10.I have had about a trillion messages on Twitter saying, they
:31:10. > :31:20.want Murray to give them a famous go, go, go. Can you just do one of
:31:20. > :31:23.
:31:23. > :31:27.those? All right, watch delights! It is four, three, two, one, and it
:31:28. > :31:33.is Go, Go, go! We are going to take a bit of a walk, but first, some
:31:33. > :31:43.guys chilling out by the bottom of the stairs. Hi, everybody. I must
:31:43. > :31:48.
:31:48. > :31:56.point out that these two are here from the Radio 1 back for show. How
:31:56. > :32:06.are you finding it? It has been amazing here. It has been an
:32:06. > :32:10.
:32:11. > :32:18.amazing day. The I am listening to you guys, to understand what is
:32:18. > :32:23.happening. They are not practising, it is qualifying. And also, they
:32:23. > :32:27.are not players, their drivers. thing which we noticed, we popped
:32:27. > :32:30.upstairs to have a look out of the back, and you pointed out, in the
:32:30. > :32:35.far distance, the cars going down hangar straight. We could not see
:32:35. > :32:42.them, only the spray, and it looked amazing. It is awesome, it is
:32:42. > :32:52.literally like a wave of water just flying across, and then, this is
:32:52. > :32:52.
:32:52. > :32:56.how good this is, within five seconds... The panic to get him out
:32:56. > :33:00.of the bar, to get him back for the link. Do not believe a word of that.
:33:00. > :33:03.This is a conspiracy. They have got a show together on Friday. I want
:33:03. > :33:09.to ask Chris, how do you put up with him, because we cannot shut
:33:09. > :33:14.him up. Jake is brilliant, he's the best thing to happen to the BBC, he
:33:14. > :33:19.really is. Without this man... Imagine if you and David Coulthard
:33:19. > :33:22.had to feel for the last half-an- hour, heaven forbid. Just one quick
:33:22. > :33:26.thing - so many people are watching this, and they are not lucky enough
:33:26. > :33:30.to be able to afford a grandstand ticket, but if people were to save
:33:30. > :33:35.up and come to Formula 1, to see the speed with your own eyes, it
:33:35. > :33:40.puts it into context, doesn't it? Yes, it is like anything. Football
:33:40. > :33:44.is better live than on TV, bands, or anything like that. The
:33:44. > :33:48.atmosphere out there and the crowd, even though they are getting
:33:48. > :33:52.absolutely drenched, spirits are still high, and everybody wants the
:33:52. > :33:57.race to continue, to get back into it. It is awesome. If you have
:33:57. > :34:01.never been, then you need to come - next year. Or Jake is going to take
:34:01. > :34:07.us all out to Abu Dhabi at the end of the season. I can definitely
:34:07. > :34:12.afford that. Do you still have a plane? Was that as in rock'n'roll
:34:12. > :34:19.or as in flying? Watch tomorrow's programme and you will soon know.
:34:19. > :34:27.And would you like to say to Damon Coulthard in the commentary box?!
:34:27. > :34:32.It was actually David! He looks like George McCartney! We have
:34:32. > :34:36.decided to come out and brave the rain. As you can see, it is still
:34:36. > :34:39.quite wet. We saw the sun and we got over-excited, so we thought we
:34:39. > :34:43.would come out and give you a flavour. There are still plenty of
:34:43. > :34:47.people walking up and down, trying to enjoy the atmosphere. We're
:34:47. > :34:51.hoping to walk all the way out of here, up on to a raised area, so
:34:51. > :34:55.you can see the grandstand. While we do that, the diggers get the
:34:55. > :35:01.latest from Ferrari, because Lee McKenzie is with them. First of all,
:35:01. > :35:05.welcome to the British summer. It is not quite the Italian speck!
:35:05. > :35:11.Fernando had a spin, and was lucky to escape - what other conditions
:35:11. > :35:14.like now? Well, I think the forecast says that in five minutes,
:35:14. > :35:20.these showers should stop, and then it all depends on when the track
:35:20. > :35:23.will be open again. Because if the track would be in the correct
:35:23. > :35:27.condition, everything can happen within a few minutes. We need to
:35:27. > :35:30.see how the track will evolve. has been so difficult to understand
:35:30. > :35:40.what has been going on, but that could be the story tomorrow as
:35:40. > :35:47.
:35:47. > :35:53.tomorrow we do not know what is going on. Now we need to see it the
:35:53. > :35:58.track will improve. If it does, we can do it. It is worth pointing out
:35:58. > :36:03.what is happening here. This is the area Pirelli tyres used for the
:36:03. > :36:07.weekend. We can see one of the tyres being worked on. It is worth
:36:07. > :36:12.pointing out to the people at home, an intermediate being put on to the
:36:12. > :36:18.rack. This is a huge working environment over the course of a
:36:18. > :36:23.race weekend getting the tyres for the teams? Thousands of tyres. This
:36:23. > :36:30.has to be planned into a work schedule. So these will probably
:36:30. > :36:39.have been made in Italy or even two months ago and then brought here as
:36:39. > :36:45.part of what is needed. Isn't it interesting. For four sets of
:36:45. > :36:51.slicks, not one taker for them. Even more lined up. Nobody is
:36:51. > :36:57.remotely thinking about slick tyres. It is about the wet tyres or the
:36:57. > :37:02.intermediate. The way we are going on, clouds have gone and I think it
:37:02. > :37:08.will dry out quickly. We will see people doing final qualifying on
:37:08. > :37:12.the intermediate tyres. An army of workers sweeping the track. No
:37:12. > :37:17.takers for the slick tyres and we are hoping before long with skies
:37:17. > :37:21.brightening and people sweeping the track, we can get some running.
:37:21. > :37:28.Let's carry on through the paddock. Very few people around compared to
:37:29. > :37:34.normal. Those tyres are all used. They had some dry running yesterday.
:37:34. > :37:39.We will give you a shot of the grandstand. Eddie, you can lead the
:37:39. > :37:44.way through the security gates. You'll need your past to get any
:37:44. > :37:52.work in Formula One. Eddie, you have dropped 50. You know a lot
:37:52. > :37:58.about a man... We are causing chaos here. Let's hear from Lee McKenzie
:37:58. > :38:05.who was with Derek Warwick. We have no 50 notes lying around
:38:05. > :38:09.here. Silverstone is trying to find a lot of investment. Derek it has
:38:09. > :38:14.been a difficult 24 hours at Silverstone, rain was probably the
:38:14. > :38:18.last thing you need it? It would have been nice to get through
:38:18. > :38:23.qualifying so we can move on. We are looking forward to tomorrow. We
:38:23. > :38:27.have done everything we can. We protected the car parks and we can
:38:27. > :38:32.accommodate everybody tomorrow. We're looking forward to it. It is
:38:32. > :38:39.a shame the rain came and practice was halted. But that is the way it
:38:39. > :38:45.is. We just have to work around it. Even I cannot control this. I have
:38:45. > :38:51.spoken to Bernie Ecclestone, and even he cannot control this. He is
:38:51. > :38:55.very supportive over Silverstone, so that means there is a very
:38:55. > :39:00.exceptional circumstances? Even the spectators, I have spoken to the
:39:00. > :39:04.fans and apologise to them. They are supported and understand the
:39:04. > :39:09.situation. They are saying they have had problems getting in. But
:39:09. > :39:12.they are looking forward to tomorrow's race. They are
:39:12. > :39:18.supportive, members are supportive and we are feeling a little bit
:39:18. > :39:22.more relieved than we were yesterday. Yesterday was hard work.
:39:22. > :39:28.Fans have been told to stay away today, is everybody welcome if they
:39:28. > :39:34.have a ticket to Myra? Absolutely. We have tried to protect the car
:39:34. > :39:38.parks today so we can have them here. We have all come for the race.
:39:38. > :39:43.Will looking forward to it tomorrow. It is going to be a good race and
:39:43. > :39:49.mixed conditions. Who is best in mixed conditions but Jenson Button
:39:49. > :39:53.and Lewis Hamilton. We are looking forward to a good British win.
:39:53. > :40:02.would go and find Eddie Jordan and pick up those 50 notes for stabbed
:40:02. > :40:07.I don't think it was a real note. Probably Monopoly money.
:40:07. > :40:13.Derek is the President of the BRDC. They run the circuit and
:40:13. > :40:17.responsible for Silverstone. They have just said, for the race day,
:40:17. > :40:21.that was their focus and they put their attention on that, if you
:40:21. > :40:28.have a ticket, they will do their best to get everyone in the
:40:28. > :40:32.grandstand. And not many sporting events has 100,000 plus. I think
:40:32. > :40:39.the sun is coming through. I think we might have a clear session to
:40:39. > :40:44.finish. Don't say it! Anyway, back to the situation. Everyone should
:40:44. > :40:47.come tomorrow. It will be a spectacular race. It is the first
:40:47. > :40:53.time Silverstone have had this number. It is difficult for them
:40:53. > :40:58.but they are getting through it quite well. Fans are still here
:40:58. > :41:03.waiting outside for an autograph of a driver. This is the brand new
:41:03. > :41:07.Silverstone wing. If you did not see this before, you're not
:41:08. > :41:13.watching the race last year. Wherever we are going, it is a
:41:13. > :41:17.popular place to go. We are going to head in between a couple of
:41:17. > :41:27.buildings to get an idea of how wet the track is. And get Eddie to wave
:41:27. > :41:31.at the fans in the grandstand. If we go down here, it saves going
:41:31. > :41:36.there and getting thrown off because that is called the Paddock
:41:36. > :41:44.Club and not even Eddie and his 50 notes can get us in there. These
:41:44. > :41:49.are the fans, and the people sweeping the track. This is where
:41:49. > :41:54.the drivers will want to maximise the last ounce of the car. So many
:41:54. > :42:00.people here, the top part of the stand has gone and I am not sure
:42:00. > :42:10.many people over there want to wave at you, Jake. Shall we give them a
:42:10. > :42:14.try. I don't think I can do this, it is beyond. I think we are too
:42:14. > :42:21.far away. Maybe you should come over here and do your bit. I'd been
:42:21. > :42:30.you have a better chance of doing it. You are on the PA. If you say
:42:30. > :42:34.hello. Hello, am I on the PA over there? Can we get a wave for the
:42:34. > :42:41.BBC Four stock he got a slight reaction but it is not the reaction
:42:41. > :42:44.he wanted. It gives you an idea of how many people are out there. They
:42:44. > :42:47.are making the decision that perhaps it was best to watch this
:42:47. > :42:53.from the safety of their tent. You have been here as a fan over the
:42:54. > :42:59.years before you came as a racing driver? I came here in 1969 the
:42:59. > :43:03.first time. I wasn't brought, I could not believe the smell, the
:43:03. > :43:07.noise and the whole thing the British Grand Prix years. It is
:43:07. > :43:12.spectacular. When you come once, it absolutely gets into your blood,
:43:12. > :43:17.your system. It is like a drug, there is no way off it will stop
:43:17. > :43:21.you are engulfed by the excitement of what Formula One is. We are so
:43:21. > :43:27.privileged to have been able to do what effectively is a hobby. We
:43:27. > :43:31.have made it into a business and a career. And also, no rain expected
:43:31. > :43:35.at the moment. And there is no rain falling in the paddock at the
:43:35. > :43:39.moment and we hope that remains the case in the pit-lane as well. Many
:43:39. > :43:45.people wouldn't know that is how you started out your motor racing
:43:45. > :43:52.career behind the wheel? Not many people should, it was that poor!
:43:52. > :43:56.Edit start, but I realised quickly I was racing against people like
:43:56. > :44:00.Nigel Mansell, and Alain Prost and Nelson Piquet. They were so
:44:00. > :44:06.brilliant, it was good to have quality drivers like them around
:44:06. > :44:10.because it gave me a lesson, let's get out of here and start a team.
:44:10. > :44:16.What do you think about the new Updates to the Marussia this
:44:16. > :44:21.weekend? I think Marussia would like to have been in Q2. They are
:44:21. > :44:25.getting through the puddles. This is where it starts to get
:44:25. > :44:29.frustrating for us, people at home and in the grandstands. We have
:44:29. > :44:34.seen them out sweeping the circuit. It has not rained for a few minutes
:44:34. > :44:41.but we have not had the green light, the cars are not on the track. It
:44:41. > :44:47.is difficult isn't it? It is drier now than it was probably 10 minutes
:44:47. > :44:53.into the second session? Charlie will now say, the great is just not
:44:53. > :44:57.even... The grid we see there is not real. There will be a new set
:44:57. > :45:02.up, even in the last six minutes they will be queuing up to be first
:45:02. > :45:07.out and they will want to go immediately and get on with it. The
:45:07. > :45:12.problem is, this will be absolutely helter-skelter. It will be
:45:12. > :45:16.frightening to see how many cars. The whole point is to make sure you
:45:16. > :45:22.get a banker in early and then wait it out to make sure a dry line
:45:22. > :45:28.comes along. I don't think we will have qualifying on slicks, it is
:45:28. > :45:32.too wet at the moment. It feels like it is drying up. That is the
:45:32. > :45:38.priority, David isn't it? As the truck drivers, the teams will be in
:45:38. > :45:42.exactly the same position as they work for Q1 and Q2. They have to
:45:42. > :45:47.get the strategy right because it would change when cars are made?
:45:47. > :45:54.DAVID COULTHARD: If I am not mistaken, I understand indication
:45:54. > :46:00.we will be getting a session under way anytime soon. Let's hope so.
:46:00. > :46:06.Professor Watkins, you know him, Eddie? A long time in Formula One?
:46:06. > :46:11.Absolutely, he has done so much for the sport. The introduced the hands
:46:11. > :46:21.system. On drivers all word this protective brace around their neck
:46:21. > :46:22.
:46:22. > :46:32.and he was the man who put it in. It has proved to be so successful.
:46:32. > :46:35.
:46:35. > :46:39.It is the KERS system. -- HANS system. He was the guy who brought
:46:39. > :46:43.with Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone, the safety regulations
:46:43. > :46:49.in place for a start you sort the safety helmets on Mark Webber, the
:46:49. > :46:53.kind of protection drivers have now is unprecedented. If you ask a
:46:53. > :47:00.Formula One driver to go on to a circuit and dried up to 200 miles
:47:00. > :47:04.an hour, you are not taking the necessary risks. They have street
:47:04. > :47:10.sweepers to clean the circuit. You have to say now, looking at this
:47:10. > :47:14.car driving round it is different to half an hour, 45 minutes ago.
:47:14. > :47:19.Spare a thought for Perez. What do you think he is thinking about at
:47:19. > :47:23.this moment? Does he think it is unfair? He has done his job and
:47:23. > :47:29.done it perfectly well. Why should it be taken away from him? I think
:47:29. > :47:36.it is a valid argument. Seven minutes past the hour, we have been
:47:36. > :47:46.told the session will start. This is the news we have wanted? We will
:47:46. > :47:51.run the remaining six minutes and 19 seconds of Q2. For people who
:47:51. > :47:56.missed the early stages, we had our first qualifying session and Jenson
:47:56. > :48:04.Button went out. We lost several of the others who would more normally
:48:04. > :48:10.expect to go out in the first part of qualifying, and then we were
:48:10. > :48:16.just over halfway through Q2 and we saw the likes of Maldonado, di
:48:16. > :48:22.Resta, Milagro Rozon, Michael Schumacher, Massa and Bruno Senna
:48:22. > :48:27.in the drop zone. They'd place for Webber And 10th for Vettel. It
:48:27. > :48:37.looks like we will get some action going. The track is drying up and
:48:37. > :48:45.the marshals have done a great job. DAVID COULTHARD: Drivers getting
:48:45. > :48:51.themselves warmed up. Lewis Hamilton getting his HANS in place.
:48:51. > :48:59.It looks like we will get some action once again. The one man who
:48:59. > :49:02.won't be in his car is Timo Glock. He did not make it out of the first
:49:02. > :49:07.part of qualifying. We have a wonderful moment of you slipping
:49:07. > :49:14.and sliding round the circuit. Give us an idea of how difficult it was?
:49:14. > :49:20.If that is the last lap, I was sideways the whole of the last
:49:21. > :49:28.corner. But in general, it is very difficult. The ice is the big one.
:49:28. > :49:35.I just lost it. When you touch the curve, it is impossible. At least
:49:35. > :49:40.stopped before the wall, so that it was good. It is a shame. We were
:49:40. > :49:45.just on a to B in Q2. But the rain came 30 seconds too early for us.
:49:45. > :49:49.think it could be to your advantage tomorrow. You have been able to
:49:49. > :49:53.keep your wet tyres and probably wouldn't have been much further up
:49:54. > :49:58.than you already are. It could be an absolute advantage to you.
:49:58. > :50:06.would have been a massive boost for the team. Especially for me after a
:50:06. > :50:12.week we had. We were just a few seconds up on the split time and my
:50:12. > :50:18.lap time. Up until Hangar Straight. I knew it would have been enough to
:50:18. > :50:28.Q2. Then Nicene the rain coming and it was raining down Hangar Straight,
:50:28. > :50:32.
:50:32. > :50:38.I lost everything. Otherwise we smaller teams. Yes, but you know,
:50:38. > :50:42.qualifying is one thing, but we all know, and we say it time and again,
:50:42. > :50:45.that the points are won on Sunday. And actually, conditions like this
:50:45. > :50:50.will give them their best opportunity to score a point. They
:50:50. > :50:57.have got to stay running, whatever happens, keep out of trouble, and
:50:57. > :51:01.be clever with the tyre choice. Is that how your team focuses? Yes, it
:51:01. > :51:06.gives us more possibilities. But on the other side, if everyone has
:51:06. > :51:11.equal conditions, and it is still wet, then the gap is still there to
:51:11. > :51:14.the top guys. So, they need to make mistakes, and we need to keep clean
:51:14. > :51:18.on track, that's for sure. But it would have been a boost for the
:51:18. > :51:23.team, they have been great. But we have to get over it and make the
:51:23. > :51:29.best of tomorrow. I know that you did not race in Valencia, but are
:51:29. > :51:33.you 100 % back to normal now? I would say I am feeling OK again.
:51:33. > :51:37.It was tough at Valencia to sit at the airport waiting for the flight
:51:37. > :51:41.when everyone else was starting the race. But these things happen, and
:51:41. > :51:45.I am back to normal shape again. spent quite a lot of time with
:51:45. > :51:52.Caterham today, because they were talking about a raft of upgrades.
:51:52. > :51:57.Sadly for them, things did not work out, because of the weather - what
:51:57. > :52:04.about Marussia and their developments this season? Yes, we
:52:04. > :52:07.lead a big step forward as well, but everybody in front of us is
:52:07. > :52:11.doing it at the same time, so it makes it difficult for us to show
:52:11. > :52:14.it. But the car felt pretty good at the weekend, and I think it is a
:52:14. > :52:19.little step forward, but we need to make another one, and that's what
:52:19. > :52:27.we'll working on. Was KERS the biggest disadvantage, by not having
:52:27. > :52:32.that? It is definitely a big advantage, having it, it is up to
:52:32. > :52:35.five tenths, I would say. But we do not have it at the moment, so we
:52:35. > :52:40.have do not think about it. We have to concentrating on getting the
:52:40. > :52:44.platform right. Regarding tomorrow, let's start focusing on the race.
:52:44. > :52:47.We are hoping that this qualifying session will soon be backed up -
:52:47. > :52:51.does it excite you when you know that the weather conditions are
:52:52. > :52:58.going to be dodgy at this high- speed circuit? Yes, it is a great
:52:58. > :53:02.circuit. If you see the fans, they are unbelievable. In these
:53:02. > :53:09.conditions, to stay here, I hope they will have a great show
:53:09. > :53:15.tomorrow, and if it is mixed conditions, that gives us a chance.
:53:15. > :53:19.We are in no danger of getting a suntan. Welcome to Britain. Good
:53:19. > :53:23.luck tomorrow in the race. A good guy, working really hard. He has
:53:24. > :53:29.had a tough weekend. They have had awful technical and reliability
:53:29. > :53:36.problems this weekend. Yes, but you know, what I was so impressed with
:53:36. > :53:41.him about was that KERS is half the second, and to go out and qualify
:53:41. > :53:45.knowing that you have not got it, how could you motivate yourself?
:53:45. > :53:48.Let's talk about the teams that have got it, the team's cars and
:53:48. > :53:53.pulling out of the garage. There are still two or three minutes to
:53:53. > :53:57.go, so why on earth would you send your car out to queue at the front?
:53:57. > :54:01.I think they have now made a mistake. That Williams is going out,
:54:01. > :54:06.yes, he is first in the queue, but it is not going to rain again, or
:54:06. > :54:11.at least it does not look like it. So, as the session goes on, it is
:54:11. > :54:20.going to get drier and drier, and all he's going to do is to drive
:54:21. > :54:26.the track for the other colours, -- for the other cars, while drying --
:54:26. > :54:30.while losing temperature in the tyres. Over at McLaren, they are
:54:30. > :54:34.taking it easy at the moment. What would be the reason for going out
:54:34. > :54:38.early? The reason would be if there was a likelihood of more rain, to
:54:38. > :54:40.try to get the best out of the track as it is at the moment,
:54:40. > :54:45.because they're hoping that some of the water will have gone away.
:54:45. > :54:49.Clearly, I do not see that. You need to have as many cars are not
:54:49. > :54:52.as possible, because that will create a race line. Once you have
:54:52. > :55:02.got the racing line, then very quickly you will see the guys
:55:02. > :55:02.
:55:02. > :55:06.coming on to slicks. As you can see, the tyres are on to deal with the
:55:06. > :55:10.wet weather. Murrary Walker, David Coulthard and Ben Edwards are up in
:55:10. > :55:14.the commentary box. Finally we can enjoy a session.
:55:14. > :55:21.BEN EDWARDS: So, the cars are at the end of the pit lane, and Pastor
:55:21. > :55:25.Maldonado is going to be first out on the circuit. Sergio Perez is
:55:25. > :55:29.fastest at the moment in Q2, which will get under way with just over
:55:30. > :55:38.six minutes to go. Hamilton is currently second. Jean-Eric Vergne,
:55:38. > :55:42.in the Toro Rosso, a surprising fourth. It seems as though
:55:43. > :55:51.Raikkonen is raring to go, it looks as though they have repaired the
:55:51. > :56:00.KERS issue. Webber is currently eighth. Vettel is tenth. In the
:56:00. > :56:06.drop zone currently, Maldonado, di Resta, Grosjean, Michael Schumacher,
:56:06. > :56:09.Felipe Massa, Alonso and Bruno Senna. Those are the guys who are
:56:09. > :56:13.more desperate than the top 10 at the moment, because they are trying
:56:13. > :56:21.to get into that top 10. And we are just hearing that actually,
:56:21. > :56:31.Raikkonen's car has not been repaired.
:56:31. > :56:41.RADIO: Like we said, it is just about getting a lap on the board.
:56:41. > :56:42.
:56:42. > :56:46.Two people on Pinter's -- on inters at the moment. David, we saw
:56:46. > :56:50.Hamilton leaving the pits on full wets - what on earth are they doing
:56:50. > :56:56.that for, and destroying this set of tyres that they may need for
:56:56. > :56:59.tomorrow? Where is the advantage? They are already second on the grid.
:56:59. > :57:04.DAVID COULTHARD: Simply, they do not know how much the track is
:57:04. > :57:08.going to improve over these last six minutes. With the full wets,
:57:08. > :57:13.you're able to maintain the heat and get the heat much easier than
:57:13. > :57:16.you can with an intermediate, which has a much smaller tread depth,
:57:16. > :57:22.therefore you do not get the block movement and therefore you do not
:57:22. > :57:28.get the heat in the tyre. Red Bull have chosen another strategy, they
:57:28. > :57:34.have also gone for the full wet tyres. The Big Issue is because you
:57:35. > :57:39.have lots of curves between the main corners, curving your way
:57:39. > :57:45.between Maggotts and Becketts, and there's still plumes of water
:57:45. > :57:52.coming off the circuit. We will find out in the next five-and-a-
:57:52. > :58:02.half minutes. But I think they could well be on the right tyre.
:58:02. > :58:03.
:58:03. > :58:13.They will get three laps, if they get a clear run. It is very wet, as
:58:13. > :58:13.
:58:13. > :58:16.you can see. It is a question of how much standing water there is.
:58:16. > :58:22.Look at the big correction for Grosjean, I think it is, slipping
:58:22. > :58:25.and sliding around. Gary, let's get your thoughts - it looks as though
:58:26. > :58:31.it could be difficult to go quicker than what they have already
:58:31. > :58:41.achieved in the earlier part of Q2. Anderson yes, and going out on the
:58:41. > :58:42.
:58:42. > :58:50.full wets is what I would have done. RADIO: Still a lot of spray. That's
:58:50. > :58:56.good, sounds like we are a on the right tyre. Definitely, quite
:58:56. > :59:03.extreme at the moment. GARY ANDERSON: Yes, that's what I
:59:03. > :59:08.would have done as well. Hamilton has gone out on the full wets. He
:59:08. > :59:18.came out of the garage and ended up behind about 12 cars, all of them
:59:18. > :59:19.
:59:19. > :59:23.which are slower than him. One of the Ferraris went out late, one of
:59:23. > :59:28.the Red Bulls went out late, so they are in the right position on
:59:28. > :59:33.the track. We are seeing Sauber making a change, taking the
:59:33. > :59:39.intermediates off, and putting the full wets on. We think the full
:59:39. > :59:45.wets are the ones to go for. Currently, Romain Grosjean needs to
:59:45. > :59:50.find a bit of time, because he is down in the drop zone. He has set a
:59:50. > :59:54.new fastest first sector, faster than anybody so far. So it does
:59:54. > :00:02.look as though we're going to see improvements on the times set
:00:02. > :00:07.previously. Yes, you can see the line basin. -- you can see the line
:00:07. > :00:12.there. The drivers will be looking out for the train tracks, and
:00:12. > :00:16.driving the car down it, because, quite simply, you pick up more grip.
:00:16. > :00:21.This is going to be an exciting few minutes. High-stakes of course.
:00:21. > :00:24.Track position is vitally important, because even if it is wet tomorrow,
:00:24. > :00:29.you do not want to be running in the spray of the cars in front,
:00:29. > :00:33.losing visibility. Just one mistake in these conditions, it is so easy
:00:33. > :00:40.to throw a lap away. Romain Grosjean, one of the least
:00:40. > :00:44.experienced drivers out there, he only did a few Grand Prix in 2009.
:00:44. > :00:48.But he has been so strong since his comeback. He was unlucky last time
:00:48. > :00:52.out with the alternator problem last time out in Valencia. It was
:00:52. > :00:56.the same problem that put Sebastian Vettel out of the race. But he has
:00:56. > :00:59.qualified consistently well this season has Sebastian Grosjean. He
:00:59. > :01:03.has gone fastest. So, the conditions are better, and that
:01:03. > :01:11.will give everybody who was not in the top 10 a big boost. And of
:01:11. > :01:16.course, the person who was fastest, Perez, will have to do it all again.
:01:16. > :01:26.DAVID COULTHARD: Rosberg getting some wheelspin as he gets up on to
:01:26. > :01:30.the kerb. Was he on a time to lap at that point? He was. So, that lap
:01:30. > :01:36.has gone. He will have to align it up again through the last turn, and
:01:36. > :01:45.he will be left with one flying lap to do his time. Vettel goes third
:01:45. > :01:49.fastest, a lot more secure than where he was. Michael Schumacher is
:01:49. > :01:54.down in 16th, but he has just set the fastest middle sector. He is
:01:54. > :02:02.having to work hard at this to try to get into the top 10, but he goes
:02:02. > :02:05.fastest! He has only ever had one pole position at Silverstone. He
:02:05. > :02:15.cannot get pole position in this session, but what he can do is get
:02:15. > :02:15.
:02:15. > :02:20.into the top 10. And Webber has now gone fastest! Only one minute to go
:02:21. > :02:26.in Q2. DAVID COULTHARD: And that's a good
:02:26. > :02:32.lap from Massa in the Ferrari. It is all going to be about each
:02:32. > :02:38.driver's last flying lap. We have Lewis Hamilton still to finish his
:02:38. > :02:43.lap, he is currently running... He is just coming through the Becketts
:02:43. > :02:46.section, so we will be able to see how his lap is unfolding. Here we
:02:46. > :02:53.have Maldonado, looking for a middle line as he comes down into
:02:53. > :02:57.Club corner. He is trying to find the grip. The rubber is on the
:02:57. > :03:01.racing line from previous races around the track. It does get
:03:01. > :03:05.washed away of course with the rain. He goes sixth fastest for the
:03:05. > :03:10.moment. But as you said, who is going to be last to cross the line
:03:10. > :03:15.here? Senna is going to get another lap. Wigan to see Ricardo in the
:03:15. > :03:21.background. Alonso has gone over the line, but Hamilton has gone
:03:21. > :03:24.fastest! Lewis Hamilton has gone fastest. But he was the first car
:03:24. > :03:32.to see the chequered flag, and we have got several still out on quick
:03:32. > :03:37.laps. Vettel has done two greens in this sector, but he finishes in
:03:37. > :03:47.seventh position. So, that was a great lap by Lewis Hamilton,
:03:47. > :03:50.
:03:50. > :03:56.clearly. Kimi Raikkonen just trying to get some grip and
:03:56. > :04:01.traction. He is about to cross the line. This will not be good enough,
:04:01. > :04:06.he is losing heaps of time in this last sector. He has gone sixth, so
:04:06. > :04:10.he is in the top 10 at the moment, with a few cars still to finish
:04:10. > :04:15.their lap. Hamilton is certainly safe. Paul di Resta desperately
:04:15. > :04:20.trying to get himself into the top 10. Big slide coming into Vale. Now,
:04:20. > :04:25.struggling to get traction as he comes through Club corner. Is there
:04:25. > :04:30.any chance? He has a personal bests in the first two sectors. He has
:04:30. > :04:40.done it, just, into 9th. Is that going to be enough? How many more
:04:40. > :04:47.
:04:47. > :04:51.two corners. We have a Lotus in the gravel. Is that Grosjean? That will
:04:51. > :04:55.will give us a waved yellow. The cars will have to slow down. They
:04:55. > :05:00.cannot do their best sector on this lap. That doesn't stop them putting
:05:00. > :05:03.in a couple of good sectors in sector one and two. That car is
:05:03. > :05:08.going nowhere. Grosjean is in the top ten at the
:05:08. > :05:13.moment, but Alonso isn't. Here comes Fernando Alonso to cross and
:05:13. > :05:17.he has just got in there in ninth place. So if his last sector was
:05:17. > :05:20.slower than what he had previously done he should be OK, but that will
:05:20. > :05:30.be something that we looked at and Paul di Resta is out by the looks
:05:30. > :05:32.
:05:33. > :05:37.of things. Kobayashi is out. We've got Rosberg, Ricciardo, and and
:05:37. > :05:41.Jean-Eric Vergne and Perez has found himself down in 17th and out
:05:41. > :05:46.of qualifying. What a turn of fortune and Grosjean out of the
:05:46. > :05:52.qualifying. He might have got the fifth fastest time, but now he has
:05:52. > :05:56.beached it, he can't play any part in qualifying. He had done a good
:05:56. > :05:59.lap so that's a great shame for Grosjean. Let's see what happened,
:05:59. > :06:03.David. Well, this is a run-down through
:06:03. > :06:07.Vale. Look at the standing water and he locked the rear axle on the
:06:07. > :06:14.down change so that's all gone wrong in the braking phase and that
:06:14. > :06:22.could be brought on by, you can see, nice drift, while it lasts.
:06:22. > :06:28.Ah, a massive amount of lock. gravel trap got the better of him.
:06:28. > :06:32.A lot of the modern circuits which have a tarmac run-off, but
:06:32. > :06:36.Silverstone is one of the old tracks and when you make a mistake,
:06:36. > :06:40.you pay the penalty. Romain Grosjean will be starting
:06:40. > :06:44.tenth as a result of that because he is into the top ten, but he is
:06:44. > :06:48.out of qualifying because he has put the car into the gravel trap
:06:48. > :06:52.and disappointingly Paul di Resta who had his best qualifying
:06:52. > :06:58.performance here 12 months ago has been knocked out. It is Paul di
:06:58. > :07:08.Resta out. Kobayashi, Rosberg, Ricciardo...
:07:08. > :07:19.
:07:19. > :07:24.TEAM RADIO: P 11. Senna and Vergne and Perez is out.
:07:24. > :07:29.Romain Grosjean's Lotus is being carried off the circuit and we will
:07:29. > :07:34.look that again in a moment with Eddie Jordan. The talking point is
:07:34. > :07:38.the man, Paul di Resta, he was saying a moment ago, "I thought
:07:38. > :07:41.there were yellow flags." Explain that.
:07:41. > :07:46.It will take sometime for the stewards to be able to understand
:07:46. > :07:50.if somebody had gone quicker in a yellow flag situation, but the
:07:50. > :07:54.problem is, will it be within the time frame that Paul di Resta needs
:07:54. > :07:58.to get his chance to go back out again? He is in that terrible
:07:58. > :08:03.position where he is 11th and had somebody broken the rules and went
:08:03. > :08:09.quicker under the yellow yellow flag, he would be in the last
:08:09. > :08:12.shootout for the Q3. I feel sorry for for Paul. It is a victim of the
:08:12. > :08:16.circumstances. Alonso just sneaking through to the
:08:16. > :08:20.final part of qualifying. Paul di Resta got knocked down to 11th
:08:20. > :08:25.place. There were yellow flags at the time and that means that you
:08:25. > :08:30.have to show your car has slowed down. If Fernando's car doesn't
:08:30. > :08:34.show that, he may have that time taken away. It is easy to do in
:08:34. > :08:40.these conditions, eddie? One you touch the side of the kerb, off you
:08:40. > :08:42.go and you wind up there, in the middle of the grass.
:08:42. > :08:48.Let's see Romain Grosjean struggling to keep his car on the
:08:48. > :08:56.track. Let's Talk to a man who will start 16th... Last on the grid?
:08:56. > :08:59.Last on the grid. I had a grid penalty.
:08:59. > :09:05.He starts last. I guess in these conditions, if you have to start
:09:05. > :09:10.last at a Grand Prix, it is not a bad place to to do that in the rain
:09:10. > :09:15.tomorrow? It is not a bad place, but it is not a good place. The car
:09:15. > :09:21.was feeling good and we were thinking in ten minutes it could
:09:21. > :09:27.have been a good possibility. We wasted two laps. High a bit of
:09:27. > :09:33.spray and on the other hand, it is always difficult to judge the track
:09:33. > :09:38.in these conditions. It is a shame. We saw you at the sharp end of the
:09:38. > :09:44.grid for a long time during this earlier session in Q1. Where have
:09:44. > :09:49.you found that extra speed or is there new updates with this car?
:09:49. > :09:58.don't have any extra speed. The rain makes the cars more even. So
:09:58. > :10:03.we are less far from the top teams. Just talk to us about the penalty
:10:03. > :10:10.that we know that you have got on the grid tomorrow, it was for an
:10:10. > :10:17.incident in Valencia. How much did you learn in that moment? Well, it
:10:17. > :10:21.was a mistake, you know. Senna was in front. It was a mistake. I will
:10:21. > :10:24.not do anymore, that's for sure. That's it. That's another story I
:10:24. > :10:27.would say. OK. And what are you looking
:10:27. > :10:31.forward to tomorrow? It will be tough starting from the back, but
:10:31. > :10:35.great fans here? We never know what's going to happen mere with
:10:35. > :10:38.the weather so hopefully it will be wet and dry and wet. It might be
:10:38. > :10:42.quite interesting and making things more easy for me!
:10:42. > :10:48.Thank you very much for joining us. We will let you go and chat to the
:10:48. > :10:52.rest of the world's media. A young guy who learned a lesson
:10:52. > :10:56.crashing two weeks ago. He takes a penalty here? The stewards at the
:10:56. > :11:00.time were right. He won't make that mistake again and if you learn by
:11:00. > :11:04.your mistakes, you have a positive outlook going forward. I like this
:11:04. > :11:06.driver. He is going to be good. Right, let's head up to the
:11:07. > :11:10.commentary box, we were talking about Fernando Alonso and we leave
:11:10. > :11:13.at the end there when he set the time that got him into the final
:11:13. > :11:19.part of qualifying, it wasn't his fastest sector and that's
:11:19. > :11:23.important? If they can prove that, he will be allowed to keep that
:11:23. > :11:28.time so he is in the top ten. There is no rushing around to appeal
:11:28. > :11:33.against a possible disqualification. It looks as if the top ten or
:11:33. > :11:38.Vettel, Webber, Alonso, Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen, in
:11:38. > :11:42.theory Grosjean, but he is not allowed to run because he went off.
:11:42. > :11:46.Both Lotuses made it into the top ten. And then Nico Hulkenberg and
:11:47. > :11:52.we have a Williams in there in Maldonado and Senna failing to get
:11:52. > :11:55.through to Q3 and it is his team- mate, Maldonado, who is determined
:11:55. > :12:05.to be first out on to the track. He loves being at the end of the pit
:12:05. > :12:06.
:12:06. > :12:10.lane there. No one is chasing him, that's
:12:10. > :12:15.interesting, David? They went and queued up risking temperatures
:12:15. > :12:18.thinking that others would be doing something similar, but with a ten
:12:18. > :12:21.minute session and no sign of any obvious rain coming in, may the
:12:21. > :12:25.others, the others are taking the view that, "Well, let's keep
:12:25. > :12:31.everything nice and warm. Get ourselves a clean line. Give the
:12:31. > :12:34.driver every opportunity with fuel to use every lap available in this
:12:34. > :12:41.session." It looks like Lewis Hamilton went out there on the full
:12:41. > :12:44.wet tyre. We have Maldonado out on the intermediate. The green is the
:12:44. > :12:48.intermediate and the blue is the full wet. Maldonado is getting his
:12:48. > :12:52.eye in to see whether it is clear enough. It does look as if there is
:12:52. > :12:56.a bit of standing water in patches and that's really the killer for
:12:56. > :13:01.the intermediate. It works well where you can get contact with the
:13:01. > :13:09.tarmac, but anywhere where you have the rivers going across, it fills
:13:09. > :13:14.the thread depth. TEAM RADIO: No more rain so far. So
:13:14. > :13:22.the track will get faster and faster and we will look after the
:13:22. > :13:29.tyres. We will keep you updated. Can you
:13:29. > :13:33.acknowledge? That's the race engineer for
:13:33. > :13:36.Maldonado giving him a series of instructions.
:13:36. > :13:43.Very, very clear the message. That's what the driver wants. He
:13:43. > :13:46.knows what the team expect of him. He He knows how many laps when they
:13:46. > :13:52.expect him to deliver the lap time and that will be at the end of this
:13:52. > :14:01.run, so they will be building confidence, we see a huge amount of
:14:01. > :14:07.oversteer from Mark Webber. DRS a still disabled. It puts them a long
:14:07. > :14:14.way down at the theent of the straights, but it is the same for
:14:14. > :14:19.everyone, but not all the engines to working to a much lower RPM, the
:14:19. > :14:23.teams have more to worry about - keeping the cars on the track.
:14:24. > :14:28.We are into the final minutes of qualifying. Gary, give us your
:14:28. > :14:32.thoughts going into the laps? think right now, Lewis Hamilton has
:14:32. > :14:40.just come in and he is putting intermediates on. He went out with
:14:40. > :14:49.the full full wets. Now the water has moved and Red Bulls have the
:14:50. > :14:55.intermediates on. Most people will need to be on the track at at right
:14:55. > :15:01.time at the end of the session. There is a fair bit of black cloud
:15:01. > :15:05.overhead again. The Venezuelan who was on pole position earlier on in
:15:05. > :15:08.Barcelona, Lewis Hamilton was fastest that day, but had his time
:15:08. > :15:11.taken away and it was this young man who managed to therefore,
:15:11. > :15:20.inherit pole, but went on to take a tremendous victory.
:15:20. > :15:22.TEAM RADIO: Michael, we believe we can see heavy rain on the radar,
:15:22. > :15:25.but it will be after Q3 at the moment.
:15:25. > :15:29.That threat of rain, that big, big black cloud, let's hope it does
:15:29. > :15:33.hold off, but for Williams, the home circuit as it is for the
:15:33. > :15:41.British teams, the eight British Formula One teams involved, but
:15:41. > :15:44.this Sil this Silverstone circuit means so much. Their first pole was
:15:44. > :15:48.at Silverstone. We had Michael Schumacher and Kimi
:15:48. > :15:54.Raikkonen who are both on the full wet. They have gone quickest in the
:15:54. > :15:58.first sector. Kimi Raikkonen is the fastest man in the middle sector.
:15:58. > :16:03.Alonso is on the intermediate tyre. So if we believe that Michael
:16:03. > :16:07.Schumacher and and Kimi Raikkonen are on the full full lap, they will
:16:07. > :16:10.need to get the intermediates on and that will give them restricted
:16:10. > :16:15.time to find their way around on that tyre.
:16:15. > :16:18.Maldonado sets the pace. Raikkonen is continuing on this lap. Now if
:16:18. > :16:24.they were going to bail out, you would have thought they would have
:16:24. > :16:30.done it and he is five seconds slower than Maldonado. Felipe Massa
:16:30. > :16:35.has gone fastest and that's a quick lap from Felipe Massa on his
:16:35. > :16:39.intermediates and and Michael Schumacher has stayed out there.
:16:39. > :16:43.He stayed out. A late and regretful miscall there to get Michael in
:16:43. > :16:47.because the evidence is that the intermediate is the fastest tyre.
:16:47. > :16:51.Just as I speak, no, he has gone fastest!
:16:51. > :16:57.I should have had a look at the sector times before questioning
:16:57. > :17:01.that! Alonso goes quicker still. He goes faster still on the
:17:01. > :17:05.intermediates. Alonso is the championship leader. Sebastian
:17:05. > :17:10.Vettel is sixth fastest, slithering and sliding.
:17:10. > :17:15.He dropped the rear axle there. Look how tentive he is as he tries
:17:15. > :17:20.to build the speed, oversteer as much as you like on the run out
:17:20. > :17:25.across the start/finish line. It puts him third at the moment. It is
:17:25. > :17:31.1.2 seconds slower than Alonso. Mark Webber is on a lap as well.
:17:31. > :17:36.There is the other Red Bull. Let's see where this puts Mark Webber. He
:17:36. > :17:45.is still eighth, he is about to go on to a lap. He hadn't set a time
:17:45. > :17:55.yet. Alonso is the fastest. We are riding here with Maldonado. Let's
:17:55. > :17:55.
:17:55. > :17:59.listen up here. TEAM RADIO: Michael, Alonso is the
:17:59. > :18:09.quickest car. A tyre change at the end of this lap. A tyre change at
:18:09. > :18:13.the end of this lap We are listening to that that
:18:13. > :18:18.throttle control. Schumacher will be in for intermediates, but he
:18:18. > :18:23.won't have the run in on the tire that Maldonado -- tyre that
:18:23. > :18:30.Maldonado had. Raikkonen is in for the intermediates. But they are
:18:30. > :18:33.fresh intermediates. Alonso is eight tenths quicker.
:18:33. > :18:37.Ferrari looking like they have got the right choice of tyres at the
:18:37. > :18:41.right moment. It will come down to this last couple of laps with over
:18:41. > :18:48.three minutes to go. If Alonso can continue the form he has shown in
:18:48. > :18:53.the first two sectors, he shall go quickest. And there you go, one
:18:53. > :18:57.second faster than his team-mate. Ferrari haven't had a pole in 31
:18:57. > :19:01.races. It is a long, long time since Ferrari were on pole. There
:19:01. > :19:05.is an opportunity for them to do it here, but Red Bull are fighting.
:19:05. > :19:11.Sebastian Vettel had a slow middle sector so it will come down to to
:19:11. > :19:15.who will get another timed after about this one is the -- so the
:19:15. > :19:21.pressure is on. He is in third position currently
:19:21. > :19:29.behind the two Ferraris. Felipe Massa backing up his team-mate
:19:29. > :19:31.after a difficult start to the season for Felipe Massa. Things
:19:31. > :19:34.improving since Monaco when he made changes to the car. He has been
:19:34. > :19:40.able to drive it harder since then and although not everything has
:19:40. > :19:46.gone according to plan, he has been much more on the pace. Webber is
:19:46. > :19:49.second splitting the two Ferraris now. Alonso, Felipe Massa, Webber.
:19:49. > :19:54.Over two minutes remain in the final part of the qualifying.
:19:54. > :20:02.Michael Schumacher has returned to the track. He will get a flying lap
:20:02. > :20:06.on his intermediates. We see Felipe Massa coming into Club Corner.
:20:06. > :20:10.So Felipe Massa who is third and we're watching him now come through
:20:10. > :20:14.the final corner as he just about holds on to it. He goes second. No
:20:14. > :20:18.quicker than Alonso. He is about half a second slower than the
:20:18. > :20:22.previous lap that Fernando Alonso did. Alonso not on such a fast lap
:20:22. > :20:27.this time around and now what's Lewis Hamilton up to? Winner in the
:20:27. > :20:32.wet in 2008. A pole winner in 2007. Let's see whether this lap is going
:20:32. > :20:36.to do it for him? Across the line he goes. He is not. He is sixth
:20:36. > :20:41.fastest and let's see now whether he can pick that up in the
:20:41. > :20:46.remaining few seconds, just a minute and a quarter to go, it is a
:20:46. > :20:50.Ferrari, one, two at the moment. Well, will it last? Mark Webber has
:20:50. > :20:55.gone fastest of all in the first two sectors. If he can keep it
:20:55. > :20:59.together. He is going into Stowe Corner, not far behind Sebastian
:20:59. > :21:04.Vettel, but Mark Webber is turning all the sectors purple. This is
:21:04. > :21:08.looking like it is a good lap. Vettel has backed out. Vettel will
:21:08. > :21:10.have one lap if he is going to improve on the fourth place.
:21:10. > :21:20.We have got Mark Webber going across the line. Let's see what he
:21:20. > :21:21.
:21:21. > :21:26.Mark Webber has gone fastest. 1:51.7. Trying to take pole
:21:26. > :21:33.position again at Silverstone. It would be Red Bull's 4th pole
:21:33. > :21:37.position in a role. Alonso was going faster again. The Ferrari is
:21:37. > :21:44.still fast. Mark Webber is pushing. It will come down to this final lap.
:21:44. > :21:46.Alonso was not giving up. Second fastest at the moment. What is
:21:46. > :21:52.Maldonado what to? I think he is going to improve but not
:21:52. > :21:58.necessarily challenging for the front row. Lewis Hamilton is doing
:21:58. > :22:03.his fastest. More than one second down on Mark Webber's first sector.
:22:03. > :22:07.It looks like Lewis Hamilton will be out of the battle for pole
:22:07. > :22:11.position. And it is starting to rain once again. Big, heavy clouds
:22:11. > :22:15.overhead having an effect. That could stymie the attempts of
:22:15. > :22:22.everyone else to go faster than Mark Webber. Mark Webber on top.
:22:22. > :22:30.Alonso, his middle sector is not so good. The and he has done! No, he
:22:30. > :22:33.has caught it. -- and he has spun. Hamilton is six. Michael Schumacher
:22:34. > :22:39.has gone faster in the middle sector, as has Sebastian Vettel.
:22:39. > :22:44.Some changes possible on this last lap. Mark Webber fastest and Alonso
:22:44. > :22:50.goes fastest for Ferrari! It is going to be so close. Michael
:22:50. > :22:55.Schumacher goes third. Pushing Hamilton down to seventh place.
:22:55. > :23:00.Alonso fastest. What about Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber?
:23:00. > :23:09.And the Red Bulls comeback? He was quickest on this second sector. --
:23:09. > :23:14.can it be Red Bulls comeback. 4th, but can Mark Webber do it? He
:23:14. > :23:19.cannot. He is second. It looks like Alonso, a winner of the 2011
:23:19. > :23:24.British Grand Prix, has taken pole position for Ferrari. Singapore
:23:24. > :23:30.2010 was the last time that he was on pole position. But Fernando
:23:30. > :23:35.Alonso has done it. It is their first pole at Silverstone since
:23:35. > :23:39.2003 and their third pole position at this track. The championship
:23:39. > :23:47.leader delivers, and the margin, absolutely minuscule over Mark
:23:47. > :23:55.Webber at the end. Just a few thousandths of a second. It is a
:23:55. > :24:03.great effort for Mercedes with Schumacher in third. 84 Hamilton,
:24:03. > :24:09.which is a real surprise in these conditions. -- 844 Hamilton. 94
:24:09. > :24:13.Hulkenberg and 10 for Grosjean, not allowed to run for qualifying. --
:24:13. > :24:18.9th for Hulkenberg. People query whether Fernando Alonso is the best
:24:18. > :24:21.driver in Formula One. I do not query it. Like the key is and he
:24:21. > :24:27.has just proved it again. This car started off badly at the beginning
:24:27. > :24:35.of the season, and it has come good, brilliantly, in the hands of
:24:35. > :24:45.Fernando Alonso. RADIO: 51.74. Very good lap. You need a negative
:24:45. > :24:47.
:24:47. > :24:53.number on your wheel. 51 hundredths of a second. Between Fernando
:24:53. > :24:58.Alonso and Mark Webber. Alonso takes pole position. Mark Webber
:24:58. > :25:08.will be on the front row once again. Schumacher's third. Felipe Massa,
:25:08. > :25:13.
:25:13. > :25:19.He will have a lot of work to do but it is the championship leader
:25:19. > :25:24.that has taken pole position for Ferrari at Silverstone. Thank you.
:25:24. > :25:27.I am in the commentary box. Murray Walker, lovely to hear from you.
:25:27. > :25:28.Fernando Alonso, and we are with the man who was knocked out at the
:25:28. > :25:33.the man who was knocked out at the end of the second part of
:25:33. > :25:37.qualifying, Paul di Resta. Real frustration. I know you would love
:25:37. > :25:41.to have had the chance to fight for it that position in front of home
:25:41. > :25:45.fans. It was a difficult one but that is not a decision I can look
:25:45. > :25:50.into. I think the stewards will look at whether it was on the
:25:50. > :25:53.yellow. We gambled too much on a dry set-up. Certainly, the weather
:25:53. > :25:56.changed for us and we were expecting it to be better than it
:25:56. > :26:03.was. Tomorrow is still hopeful. I think we're starting in a
:26:03. > :26:08.reasonable position. It would have been nice to have had it be a bit
:26:08. > :26:12.better. You replied immediately on the phone, you said "What is
:26:12. > :26:17.happening about the yellow flags?" Were you convinced that Alonso had
:26:17. > :26:20.made a mistake. We spoke about it yesterday and it was unclear how
:26:20. > :26:25.much is a lift and what is necessary. I do not have access to
:26:26. > :26:30.that. That is for the stewards. It has not cost us too much but what
:26:30. > :26:35.it cost us was a chance to get into Q3 and dial the car in a bit better.
:26:35. > :26:39.Hopefully tomorrow, we can do better. I love the fact that Eddie
:26:39. > :26:42.thinks you have a phone in the car! Isn't that lovely? As soon as the
:26:42. > :26:46.session is over, the heavens have opened. Mark Webber, climbing out
:26:47. > :26:51.of his car there, he had a great fun qualifying session. Sergio
:26:51. > :26:55.Perez, despite being the fastest man on the track, sadly qualified
:26:55. > :27:01.in 17th. The fastest driver before the rain
:27:01. > :27:08.but not after the rain. What happen to? We went with inters. I could
:27:08. > :27:15.not get it together. It is a big shame that I could not get a lap
:27:15. > :27:22.together. The risks that we to, it was definitely the wrong call. --
:27:22. > :27:25.we took. As a team, we made the wrong call. Frustration, real
:27:25. > :27:29.frustration for Sergio Torres. It shows you how easy it is to get
:27:29. > :27:33.things wrong. Despite Eddie telling Ferrari off for not getting it
:27:33. > :27:37.right in changeable positions, they got it right today. And there is
:27:37. > :27:42.the man who got it right, Fernando Alonso. Let us hear from the team
:27:42. > :27:46.principal. Stefano, absolutely fantastic.
:27:46. > :27:52.can see how things can change in a few minutes. People were saying
:27:52. > :27:55.that it was a disaster, and that is why we need to stay cool and calm.
:27:55. > :28:00.Driving in those conditions, exploring the car to the maximum.
:28:00. > :28:04.Absolutely. It was an incredible lap. We're happy because it was an
:28:04. > :28:08.easy qualifying, but tomorrow is the most important thing. He called
:28:08. > :28:13.it right for the team, Stefano. Interesting to see Fernando looking
:28:13. > :28:18.at the Lotus to work out why the car is so fast. That is his nature.
:28:18. > :28:23.He is the ultimate professional. The most people think, and even
:28:23. > :28:26.Murray endorses that further, that he is the top man. The way he is
:28:26. > :28:30.going about this season, in a car that is not the best, he is doing
:28:30. > :28:35.the best job in the car. You have to work on your umbrella technique.
:28:35. > :28:38.Look at my right arm. I am perfectly dry. Don't worry. There
:28:38. > :28:42.is method in my madness. Thankfully, it is dry at Wimbledon at the
:28:42. > :28:52.moment. You can see all the action as that ladies final on falls on
:28:52. > :28:54.
:28:54. > :28:58.BBC One and BBC 1HT. -- Ladies' Final unfolds. -- BBC One HD. We
:28:58. > :29:03.return tomorrow with the British Grand Prix. All of the build up is
:29:03. > :29:05.live on BBC One and then we head over to BBC Two for the race.
:29:05. > :29:09.Everything is in high-definition. We have been talking about a
:29:09. > :29:14.certain Murray this weekend but it was lovely to have our own Murray
:29:14. > :29:17.in the commentary box. It was a voice that most of us grew up with
:29:17. > :29:22.and I had the privilege of racing under him. His excellence in front
:29:22. > :29:26.of the camera and on air is at echt -- remarkable. Mother Nature can do
:29:26. > :29:30.what she likes but you will never rain on the parade of the British
:29:30. > :29:34.Formula One fans. Thanks to the real heroes today, the thousands in
:29:34. > :29:39.the grandstands. They were fantastic but the man who rode the
:29:39. > :29:49.storm better than everyone else, Fernando Alonso. Ferrari were
:29:49. > :30:03.
