:00:59. > :01:03.Last year, this was the scene of a monumental Grand Prix. At four
:01:03. > :01:07.hours and four minutes, it was the longest F1 race in history, a war
:01:07. > :01:17.of attrition and the battle against the elements, but one man
:01:17. > :01:27.
:01:27. > :01:32.MUSIC. You can't see anything. What is he
:01:32. > :01:36.doing? This is a difficult and for McLaren.
:01:36. > :01:41.Everything pretty much went wrong that could have gone wrong,
:01:41. > :01:48.crashing with Lewis, crashing with Fernando. Getting a puncture,
:01:48. > :01:53.breaking my front wheel, having a drive-through, the pit stops.
:01:53. > :01:58.Jenson Button is on the charge. Having a tough year that I have had
:01:58. > :02:03.has helped me, it made me realise you can't give up. Whatever happens,
:02:03. > :02:10.and never give up. This is brave stuff from Jenson.
:02:10. > :02:16.Every move you make feel so good. This race is not over. TEAM RADIO:
:02:16. > :02:26.We can win this race. What can Jenson Button do? I didn't know if
:02:26. > :02:29.
:02:29. > :02:34.I would get past Sebastian on the He deserved this win, everyone
:02:34. > :02:38.knows that. TEAM RADIO: Brilliant, Jenson.
:02:38. > :02:42.EDDIE JORDAN: Am I watching what I am watching, this is the best
:02:43. > :02:50.racing? My whole career has been a roller-coaster ride and it had
:02:50. > :02:55.ended on a high, which was great. I would say, yes, it is my greatest
:02:55. > :03:00.ever win. Well, what an amazing race, David
:03:00. > :03:03.Coulthard. It was certainly a race everyone will remember. It was the
:03:03. > :03:07.longest ever Grand Prix, just over four hours, we were making all
:03:07. > :03:11.sorts of stuff up in the commentary box but what a great end to the
:03:11. > :03:16.weekend. You have had some dramatic races here, you scored your first
:03:16. > :03:20.point, you have had podium finishes and pole positions, does it hold
:03:20. > :03:25.good memories? It does, there is a great history, an amazing backdrop
:03:25. > :03:29.in Montreal, the teams love coming here and the drivers love it. It is
:03:29. > :03:34.very high speed, tight chicanes. All of the drivers talk about how
:03:34. > :03:38.much they enjoyed but it is a tricky place to tame. Why is it so
:03:38. > :03:42.challenging? It is the high-speed nature of the entries, which is why
:03:42. > :03:50.the drivers love it so much. There is a consequence to any decision
:03:50. > :03:56.you make. If you try to break later, it carries consequences. -- brake.

:04:20. > :04:24.track, there is a real solid and amazingly, we have had six
:04:24. > :04:31.different winners from the first six races of the year -- race seven.
:04:31. > :04:34.We head back to Europe for the next few races but back this way for the
:04:34. > :04:37.few races but back this way for the penultimate race. David, three
:04:37. > :04:42.world champion still haven't won it yet, you would think they had a
:04:42. > :04:46.good chance this weekend. Record brooks were rewritten in Monaco and
:04:46. > :04:51.we could have a seventh win this weekend and I suspect we will.
:04:51. > :04:55.Lewis Hamilton has been superb on this racetrack in the past, he
:04:56. > :05:00.could be the man most likely. has such an interesting record here,
:05:00. > :05:06.all or nothing. He has won twice but also crashed out twice. It is
:05:06. > :05:08.the nature of this track. He is a very committed driver, which has
:05:08. > :05:13.delivered him consecutive pole positions, but if it goes wrong
:05:13. > :05:16.during the course of a Grand Prix, it can lead to an incident. I think
:05:16. > :05:19.we are seeing a much more controlled Lewis Hamilton, he has
:05:19. > :05:24.the speed we know he has but he is playing the long game. He looks
:05:24. > :05:28.like a man who once the first win of the year. And lot of drivers
:05:28. > :05:37.talking up their chances but there is some other news out there, here
:05:37. > :05:41.is Ben Edwards. Despite rival dreams and objecting
:05:41. > :05:45.to the Red Bull build, know a formal our objections and the issue
:05:45. > :05:51.remains. A halt have been banished and according to Mark Webber, that

:05:55. > :06:00.go on each year, small interpretations of the Rolls and at
:06:00. > :06:03.they get changed, because that is how Formula One is -- the rules.
:06:03. > :06:07.While Jenson Button has great memories of last year, he is aware
:06:07. > :06:11.that his qualifying this year it needs to improve. 10th and 12th in
:06:11. > :06:19.the last two events, he has been out-qualified six Nell verses
:06:19. > :06:27.Hamilton. -- 6 nil. It is tricky to understand. Here, you do certain
:06:27. > :06:30.things to the car for this circuit and it will help qualifying. Lewis
:06:30. > :06:34.Hamilton has enjoyed three propositions on his four visits to
:06:34. > :06:39.this track. What chance that he could become the seventh different
:06:39. > :06:43.winner of the season? I think anyone can be the seventh winner,
:06:43. > :06:46.even the Marussia drivers have the chance to be the seventh winner, it
:06:46. > :06:51.is so random this year, but we have prepared in the best way possible
:06:51. > :07:00.and I think we are in a strong position, but we are SOME
:07:00. > :07:04.incredibly tough teams. Michael Schumacher has won here and seems
:07:04. > :07:07.impressed by the potential of the Mercedes, as does Nico Rosberg.
:07:07. > :07:14.Everybody seems to think you have a good chance of winning this race,
:07:14. > :07:18.is that how you see it? I seem to think the same thing. We have good
:07:18. > :07:23.straight-line speed because we have the Mercedes engine in the back, so
:07:23. > :07:28.it should suit did pretty well here. While Felipe Massa demonstrated
:07:28. > :07:33.improved form in Monaco, the rumour mill continues to correct --
:07:33. > :07:37.Connect a variety of drivers to the team for 2013. One who seems to
:07:37. > :07:43.have been discounted according to the Ferrari boss is Sergio Perez,
:07:43. > :07:49.but he remains tight-lipped. I will respect his comments, he has enough
:07:49. > :07:52.experience to judge. I am doing my job and I'm doing my best every

:07:56. > :08:00.right now I am not really worried. right now I am not really worried.
:08:00. > :08:06.LEE MCKENZIE: Sergio Perez sits an impressive 10th in this topsy-turvy
:08:06. > :08:10.championship. And Fernando Alonso will be delighted to be at the top
:08:10. > :08:17.of the pile. David, although it has been a mixed up season, five world
:08:17. > :08:20.champions in the top seven. shouldn't be surprised, based in --
:08:20. > :08:23.it is a lot closer than the last it is a lot closer than the last
:08:23. > :08:26.two years, but I think it is a reflection of the stability in the
:08:26. > :08:30.regulations, all of the teams are getting closer to the peak of
:08:30. > :08:35.performers. How will Sebastian Vettel field? Coming to this race
:08:35. > :08:39.last year, five pole position and five points, this year only one of
:08:39. > :08:43.each. I think he was frustrated earlier in the season, but I think
:08:43. > :08:47.he has had time to realise that this year will be won by
:08:48. > :08:50.consistency. He won't be able to win as many as he did in his second
:08:50. > :08:53.world championship year. He has looked very good through free
:08:53. > :08:58.practice and he will be pushing it to the limit, as well all of the
:08:58. > :09:01.guys back -- battling for the championship. This is the first
:09:01. > :09:07.high-speed test of the season, with speeds in excess of 300 kilometres
:09:07. > :09:12.per hour. So it demands a different car to watch you have seen earlier.
:09:12. > :09:17.Gary has been looking at what some of the teams bring to the track.
:09:17. > :09:24.After the controversy of the holes in the Red Bull car in Monaco, the
:09:24. > :09:28.FIA has clarified that they are going to implement things as is
:09:28. > :09:33.said in a technical handbook. So it was a job of basically blocking
:09:33. > :09:37.them off. But they have some holes and the front axle that allows air
:09:37. > :09:43.flow of to help cool the brakes. They have had to fill these because
:09:43. > :09:46.they deemed it to be at moving aerodynamic device. To everybody's
:09:46. > :09:50.surprise, Ferrari are leading the world championship, but they need a
:09:50. > :09:54.lot of new developments to Montreal. The inside of the tyres are
:09:54. > :09:58.completely shielded, but more importantly, the exhaust out that
:09:58. > :10:02.have been modified. Like the McLaren, getting better airflow
:10:02. > :10:06.into the inside of the rear tyre means you get more than forced into
:10:06. > :10:16.the diffuser. I think we will see a more competitive Ferrari -- Macro
:10:16. > :10:18.
:10:18. > :10:21.And in the Williams, it has a bent section, which means the amount of
:10:21. > :10:25.downforce will be greater. It is about who has the fastest car
:10:25. > :10:31.coming up to the last chicane. Friday are Montreux -- in Montreal
:10:31. > :10:35.was used for a lot of testing. The Red Bull car measures the air speed
:10:35. > :10:44.away from the surface of the car and when she discovered that, you
:10:44. > :10:47.can try and instigate some turning manoeuvres to take advantage.
:10:47. > :10:52.of this effort is to get an edge, but how does it feel for the
:10:52. > :10:55.drivers? Does it feel different? will do, especially when they use
:10:55. > :11:00.all of these different devices, but with restrictions and in-season
:11:00. > :11:06.testing, they have the use Friday's to see how they can make progress -
:11:06. > :11:10.- they have the use of Fridays. Ferrari are a good example of that,
:11:10. > :11:14.they have developed the car well, and that is the Q2 winning the
:11:14. > :11:17.World Championship. It is so important to feel comfortable at
:11:17. > :11:21.this circuit, and a couple of drivers not feeling comfortable
:11:21. > :11:24.drivers not feeling comfortable yesterday. A small mistake can have
:11:24. > :11:29.big consequences, as Heikki Kovalainen found out. This was a
:11:29. > :11:34.strange one. He started to lose the back end coming out of that second
:11:34. > :11:38.chicane but it looked as if the car bottomed out. The entry phase,
:11:38. > :11:43.nicely under control, transition phase, gets on the power, and visit
:11:43. > :11:47.the back end. When he makes a correction, it runs on and it sucks
:11:47. > :11:52.him into the wall. Here we have Bruno Senna at the last chicane.
:11:52. > :11:56.They call this the Wall of Champions because several have
:11:56. > :11:59.crashed here in the past. This is a clumsy one, he is experienced
:11:59. > :12:09.around this track. High-speed breaking into the corner, the
:12:09. > :12:12.
:12:12. > :12:17.across the run-off area but he tried to correct and it was a one-
:12:17. > :12:25.way ticket to the wall. So apart from keeping out of the war, what
:12:25. > :12:30.is the success? -- wall. It is the braking zones. You should be
:12:30. > :12:40.running at the same seed Agger teammates, but if you can just E
:12:40. > :13:08.
:13:08. > :13:15.Kuyt -- E Kuyt that breaking, you qualifying Ed de Schill at

:13:21. > :13:25.RADIO: There is still went on the straight, but a bit less. Intensity
:13:25. > :13:29.has changed a little bit from the morning but not as high as
:13:29. > :13:33.yesterday. Track temperature is now 40 degrees, that is up nine degrees
:13:34. > :13:43.on this morning. Let's get a word from Gary Anderson in the pit lane.
:13:44. > :13:44.
:13:44. > :13:50.What can we expect from qualifying exciting time. 16 cars within one
:13:50. > :13:57.second that this morning, so blink and you lose it at these chicanes.
:13:57. > :14:02.It will be something like 15.1, 15.2. The super-soft tyres is
:14:02. > :14:07.perhaps half a second quicker than the soft tyre. But the one thing
:14:07. > :14:12.that is interesting is as the tale went down towards the pits, the
:14:12. > :14:16.cloud cover is there now, so a bit cooler.
:14:17. > :14:21.DAVID COULTHARD: This is Kobayashi moving very wide through Turn One.
:14:21. > :14:25.We saw Jean-Eric Vergne do something very similar this morning.
:14:25. > :14:29.He carried into the tyres as he carried the momentum, that is an
:14:29. > :14:32.example of how not to do it. couple of cars going quickly and
:14:33. > :14:37.Lewis Hamilton is one of them, fastest in both free practice
:14:37. > :14:42.sessions on Friday. Not fastest this morning but third quickest and
:14:42. > :14:47.he has a very good record in Canada. Three propositions at this track,
:14:47. > :14:51.including his first ever in 2007, which led to his first-ever Grand
:14:51. > :14:55.Prix victory, so fond memories of this circuit. He loves the place,
:14:55. > :15:05.doesn't he? He relishes getting close to the walls and challenging
:15:05. > :15:07.
:15:07. > :15:12.positions round this track. We saw him in free practise, waving to the
:15:12. > :15:19.crowd, round turn ten. Getting close to the grass. Getting ready
:15:19. > :15:23.to deliver what will be his opening lap time. It's a 1.16.2. He is
:15:23. > :15:27.using the soft tyre. The yellow marked one. Some way off what we
:15:27. > :15:33.saw this morning. He will get a couple of laps out of their tyre.
:15:33. > :15:38.He is likely to go quicker. They will have fuelled the car for a few
:15:38. > :15:43.gaps. We see Sebastian Vettel visualising his lap. He will see a
:15:43. > :15:48.pole position. That is in the first part of qualifying. They are only
:15:48. > :15:55.looking through to the next section. We see Perez coming to finish his
:15:55. > :16:02.opening lap. Yes Sergio Perez. 1.16.1. On the yellow soft tyre.
:16:02. > :16:07.have seen very little degradation. Lap on lap they are building
:16:07. > :16:12.momentum. Massa lost the rear end on entry. So different to what we
:16:12. > :16:16.saw with Kamui Kobayashi who has undersear. Massa on turn in,
:16:16. > :16:20.locking up the rear axle. They will have fuelled the car for three
:16:21. > :16:25.timed laps, to get the opportunity, to build some momentum, and use the
:16:25. > :16:30.fact that the tyres are not dropping off in performance and
:16:30. > :16:35.deliver the lap time. Let us see what these two are tkp doing. Kamui
:16:35. > :16:39.Kobayashi is going fast. Fernando Alonso was going fast, it looks
:16:40. > :16:44.like it it could be a good lap. This is off what he did this
:16:44. > :16:49.morning, he is on the harder of the two compound tyres, the soft as
:16:49. > :16:55.opposed to the supersoft. That was Perez coming through, a moment ago.
:16:55. > :16:59.He skirted that wall. Known as the champions wall, from 1999 where
:16:59. > :17:04.three World Champions crashed into that wall during the race,
:17:04. > :17:08.including Michael Schumacher and others have gone off many times
:17:08. > :17:13.since. Bruno Senna -- hit the wallette yesterday. A nice slide
:17:13. > :17:17.from Paul di Resta. Nico Hulkenberg is second and he goes fourth.
:17:17. > :17:20.steady opening last from Paul di Resta. The forces for is looking
:17:21. > :17:24.stronger in free practise round this Monday trarl track than what
:17:24. > :17:28.we saw in Monaco, they ended up getting both cars in the points
:17:29. > :17:35.there, so good result for them, they will look to try and
:17:35. > :17:38.capitalise on the speed they get from that engine and deliver a
:17:38. > :17:43.strong, we would be would be a top ten qualifying. Michael Schumacher
:17:43. > :17:49.looks to try and continue the good work he did in Monaco by going
:17:49. > :17:52.fastest in qualifying. He is second quickest. He has a tremendous
:17:52. > :17:56.record. Here comes Lewis Hamilton out of the final quarter. Let us
:17:56. > :18:01.see where this puts the McLaren he is seventh at the moment, he goes
:18:01. > :18:11.second. 1.15.3 for Lewis Hamilton and Massa is now on a good lap as
:18:11. > :18:16.well. Now, Gary said to us round 1.15. 1, 15.152, but some of those
:18:16. > :18:22.behind might have to do another run. A bit of a story here developing.
:18:22. > :18:28.Caterham is battling to get through to Q2 and Petrov and Laszlo Kovacs
:18:28. > :18:35.are ahead of Vergne, but they are in that drop zone. Petrov Heikki
:18:35. > :18:39.Kovalainen, Glock, Pic, all in the drop zone. Close and competitive on
:18:39. > :18:43.the time. Could be an opportunity. Jean-Eric Vergne will have to go on
:18:43. > :18:48.the supersoft tyres. Unless he is feeling particularly confident. He
:18:48. > :18:57.missed the morning session having crashed at turn two. Let us watch
:18:57. > :19:03.how to do turn ten. Nice, not too eventful. That is what the drivers
:19:03. > :19:13.need to do on the Pirelli tyres, you don't want to fight it at the
:19:13. > :19:19.
:19:19. > :19:23.hairpin. Let us see what it looks out to the wall. He goes fastest.
:19:23. > :19:26.1.14.7 for Sebastian Vettel, that is on the harder of the two tyres.
:19:26. > :19:32.Think what is interesting in that, typically Red Bull have not been
:19:32. > :19:37.strong the last couple of seasons, in straight line speed. Even when
:19:37. > :19:41.they were winning the championship, they would find them outside the
:19:41. > :19:45.top 15, in terms of V max. Sebastian Vettel fastest of all. A
:19:45. > :19:55.lot of the lap time coming from the braking and change of direction in
:19:55. > :19:56.
:19:56. > :20:00.this last chicane, in front of the come box. Let us look at Raikkonen.
:20:00. > :20:06.The red marked side walls. Not having a lot of confidence that he
:20:06. > :20:09.can do the job on the slightly slower of the tyres. That is a
:20:09. > :20:14.surprise. Lotus haven't been showing the form we have seen from
:20:14. > :20:19.this this yore, no doubt they have had to go for the softer of the the
:20:19. > :20:24.two tyre compound. Kimi has take an victory in the past. They have to
:20:24. > :20:28.find pace here. He has never been on the front row in Canada.
:20:28. > :20:35.have Raikkonen in 12th behind Grosjean, all weekend and he has
:20:36. > :20:39.backed out of it. He is feeling the need to get clean air, they have
:20:39. > :20:45.been beside each other on the time sheets. Romain Grosjean has been
:20:45. > :20:48.the slightly quicker, can Raikkonen use his experience? We are onboard
:20:48. > :20:55.with Perez, on the supersoft tyre as you can see, the red side walls
:20:55. > :21:05.on the front tyres. And Sergio sits and waits, this long straight to be
:21:05. > :21:06.
:21:06. > :21:10.completed. Let us watch him. Such a crucial corner. Gear change in the
:21:10. > :21:15.middle of a coner there from Sergio. You hear that from a throft guys.
:21:15. > :21:20.Across the line and he is tenth fastest. I don't think that is the
:21:20. > :21:23.right way n my view to be quick in that last chicane. When do you a
:21:23. > :21:27.down shift, we see Pastor Maldonado doing it, and Kamui Kobayashi
:21:27. > :21:33.getting on the grass through the exit of turn one, but any way, I
:21:33. > :21:38.want to say when you down shift in the middle of that last chicane, a
:21:38. > :21:42.big power slide, Bruno Senna out of the last chicane. Let us see what
:21:42. > :21:47.he delivers. It is not a big improvement. That is right. He is
:21:47. > :21:56.down in 14th place. Senna needs a good result. Vettel is on a good
:21:56. > :22:00.lap. He might go quirk than 1.14.. He has done a 1.14.6. He is going
:22:00. > :22:05.faster. You are onboard with Paul di Resta in the forces for. He is
:22:05. > :22:09.on the supersoft tyre and he is aiming to move up the order. Nico
:22:09. > :22:14.Hulkenberg is fifth. Paul di Resta displaces his team-mate by a few
:22:14. > :22:17.hundreds of a second. Good effort from both Force India. They should
:22:17. > :22:21.be safe they have been split by Rosberg. I don't know how you could
:22:21. > :22:28.split them, they are so close. You have Vettel on top. Michael
:22:28. > :22:33.Schumacher, Alonso, then Webber, in the drop zone we have Petrov and
:22:33. > :22:42.Heikki Kovalainen, then Jean-Eric Vergne, the two HRTs of Clemence
:22:42. > :22:46.Poesy and Glock. The HRT. We have to give recognition to Pedro de la
:22:46. > :22:52.Rosa as we see Jenson Button finding form on the supersofts and
:22:52. > :22:58.a 14.7. He will get through this first part. Down in the drop zone.
:22:58. > :23:02.Rose groetsing that HRT in -- gross. Pedro de la Rosa. HRT have been
:23:02. > :23:07.working to get themselves out of being the slowest cars in Formula

:23:21. > :23:25.year, that is not good, through free practise. Petrov quicker than
:23:25. > :23:28.Heikki Kovalainen. It doesn't happen very often that Heikki
:23:28. > :23:33.Kovalainen's team-mate is quicker than him. It might change. We have
:23:33. > :23:38.a bit of time to go in the first set. Pastor Maldonado across the
:23:38. > :23:42.line in the Williams. And at the moment, we will have to see. He is
:23:42. > :23:47.in danger territory in 17th place. Jean-Eric Vergne should get another
:23:47. > :23:53.time lap after the one he is on. We will get a replay of the trin to
:23:53. > :23:58.turn one, locking up. Hits the apex and gets the car positioned into
:23:58. > :24:03.turn two. A bit wide on the entry phase. You can use some of the kerb
:24:03. > :24:09.there. That was good. Let us see whether that was enough. Petrov
:24:09. > :24:14.still not an improvement. 1.16.705. We will have to wait and see what
:24:14. > :24:22.Heikki Kovalainen does. He is on a lap himself at the moment, but it
:24:22. > :24:25.looks as though we will lose the two Caterhams unless something
:24:25. > :24:31.change, Pedro de la Rosa's performance impressive. He was
:24:31. > :24:35.really happy with his lap in Monaco. At the moment he is faster that
:24:35. > :24:39.both of them. Vergne is at risk of dropping a place to him. He has
:24:39. > :24:49.been matching, they have been matching each other, so let us see
:24:49. > :24:51.
:24:51. > :24:57.how the lap unfolds. That is a slow time lap. Laszlo Kovacs. Pastor
:24:57. > :25:00.Maldonado goes 13th. Senna by the way is very safe. He is up in
:25:00. > :25:04.seventh. Mald not Senna in the first part. The clock ticking away,
:25:04. > :25:07.it goes to zero. It is OK if you are still on a lap like Jean-Eric
:25:07. > :25:12.Vergne. This is when the pressure is on. He crashed the car in the
:25:12. > :25:17.morning session. His first season in Formula One, he has one lap to
:25:17. > :25:23.get himself up in front of his team mate, which is the ultimate goal
:25:23. > :25:31.for Jean-Eric Vergne, against Daniel Ricciardo. Let us see how it
:25:31. > :25:34.is unfoeding. It not looking good. He is down on that. It doesn't look
:25:34. > :25:39.as though Vergne will be able to displace him. Vergne is the
:25:39. > :25:44.youngest driver on the grid. 22- year-old, in his first season of

:25:47. > :25:52.Comes back out again, and he is going to cross the line, I don't
:25:52. > :25:57.know it will be enough. He stays 20th. Meanwhile cove has gone
:25:57. > :26:01.faster than his team-mate -- Laszlo Kovacs. It doesn't happen he gets
:26:01. > :26:05.outqualified and Laszlo Kovacs has managed to go quicker. But the
:26:05. > :26:11.Caterhams the fastest of the cars that have dropped out. Looking back
:26:11. > :26:14.at a lot of wheel action from Jean- Eric Vergne. He hasn't found his
:26:14. > :26:20.comfort zone. He had difficult any that first section of the track,
:26:20. > :26:25.and that has led through to what will be a very disappointed Toro
:26:25. > :26:29.Rosso driver. It is Sebastian Vettel fastest in the first part of

:27:12. > :27:14.
:27:14. > :27:20.outqualified Glock and Pic. And Narain Karthikeyan. A bit of kerb

:27:24. > :27:27.Look at the car sliding through the exit. He is charging off. He went
:27:27. > :27:33.quicker than his team-mate. He will be happy about that. But
:27:33. > :27:43.disappointed not to have got through, into Q2. The cars out. The
:27:43. > :27:45.
:27:45. > :27:52.drivers are out.. Out after Q1 are you disappointed. I didn't expect
:27:52. > :27:56.us to qualify unless someone has a problem. Since Monaco, we, we can't
:27:56. > :28:00.be expecting that result every weekend, so, in a way I am not
:28:00. > :28:05.surprised we are out, I did make a mistake on the last corner. I would
:28:05. > :28:11.have been closer. I was trying to cut the last corner ant went too
:28:11. > :28:14.much. I launched the car with the kerb. I will try 100%, since
:28:15. > :28:19.yesterday's crash, I am happy about my car crew, they are done an
:28:19. > :28:23.excellent job. The car feels as good as it could at the moment. We
:28:23. > :28:26.are working on the updates and hopefully close the gap later on in
:28:26. > :28:31.the season. It is about finding your limits on the Friday. Tomorrow,
:28:31. > :28:35.what can we expect from you? Classic trend has been, we are
:28:35. > :28:39.closer in the rain than qualifying. I hope we can continue that
:28:39. > :28:44.tomorrow. I think this hot conditions today are quite
:28:44. > :28:49.different to yesterday, so I don't think we can read that yesterday.
:28:49. > :28:53.It's a bit of a long run. I will try to attack and take as many cars
:28:53. > :28:58.as I can and stay on the track all the way through. Thank you. Let us
:28:58. > :29:03.get back to the action now. second stage of qualifying gets
:29:03. > :29:05.under way. Daniel Ricciardo is first out in the Toro Rosso. We
:29:05. > :29:10.have seen his team-mate go out, Jean-Eric Vergne, joining those
:29:10. > :29:15.that have not made it through into Q2. Now then Gary, you were
:29:15. > :29:19.accurate on your prediction of the times required in Q1. Give yours
:29:19. > :29:26.thought, any surprises in, particularly from the front runners
:29:26. > :29:33.and what question expect from this one? The slowest was a 15.5 for
:29:33. > :29:37.rick rbg. Massa was on a 15.1. You will have to get into probably a
:29:37. > :29:41.14.8, 14.6 to get through. It is going to be competitive. I do
:29:41. > :29:46.believe there is half a second on the softer tyres. A lot of the
:29:46. > :29:56.front runners didn't run it. So there is no give me, you have to
:29:56. > :29:58.
:29:58. > :30:02.compound for this part of qualifying. Jenson Button coming
:30:02. > :30:07.out early, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg. Not waiting around very
:30:07. > :30:13.long. Kobayashi has got some good clear space in front of him for the
:30:13. > :30:18.moment, it just depends on who might come out of the pits. Sauber,
:30:18. > :30:22.when they were BMW Sauber, had their one and only race victory
:30:22. > :30:28.thanks to Robert Kubica in 2008. A brilliant win and 12 months on from
:30:28. > :30:33.a big accident he had here in 2007. Sauber, their best result has been
:30:33. > :30:37.a couple of fourth-place finishes in Canada in the past, but the car
:30:37. > :30:43.has been looking impressive. But we are watching Daniel Ricciardo. We
:30:43. > :30:48.know it will be hard work for him to get close to being in Q1, but he
:30:48. > :30:55.will be -- he surprised us all in Bahrain when he ended up sixth on
:30:55. > :31:00.the grid. Yes, again, it is showing the unpredictability of this season
:31:00. > :31:06.that we see occasionally what are the mid- teens consolidate in the
:31:06. > :31:09.top 10. -- teams. I wouldn't say Toro Rosso are particularly
:31:09. > :31:16.comfortable on this track but Daniel has got through to the
:31:16. > :31:20.second part of qualifying and has gone early on the super-soft tyres.
:31:20. > :31:24.We will just watch this lap on fault. He has been a consistent
:31:24. > :31:28.finisher this year although he was out of luck in Monaco last time. It
:31:28. > :31:32.is a team that struggles in terms of budget, they don't have much to
:31:32. > :31:39.develop the car through the season, so what they start with, they don't
:31:39. > :31:47.have a lot of options to change it, unlike Ferrari and McLaren. 1: 15.9,
:31:47. > :31:55.Gary by saying we need a 1: 14, so here it is about 1.5 seconds away.
:31:55. > :32:00.On board with Nico Rosberg. His experience and knowledge of the
:32:00. > :32:03.track should put what happened this morning behind him quickly.
:32:03. > :32:07.suspect that Red Bull will get out of the way as they run down on the
:32:07. > :32:17.fastest section of the track. Picks up a little bit of a slipstream,
:32:17. > :32:18.
:32:18. > :32:22.and makes a brake suggestion -- adjustment. Unfortunately, the
:32:22. > :32:29.director decides not to give us the on-board view as he slices through
:32:29. > :32:35.the kerbs. We are hearing on the team radio that Fernando Alonso
:32:35. > :32:40.words -- was told that the team want to see a 14.4 from him to
:32:40. > :32:44.become the ball through this part of qualifying. So not too different
:32:44. > :32:49.to what Gary was saying -- to be comfortable through this part of
:32:49. > :32:55.qualifying. Lewis Hamilton relishing their challenge today, to
:32:55. > :32:58.try and take pole position. -- the challenge. He has had a
:32:58. > :33:04.couple already this year and he has qualified top three in terms of lap
:33:04. > :33:07.time at every event this year. His worst was third in Monaco, he has
:33:07. > :33:14.been in the top two in terms of times everywhere else but penalties
:33:14. > :33:24.have affected it. He goes fastest, 1: 14.5. Let's see what Gen gutted
:33:24. > :33:26.
:33:26. > :33:29.is up to. Locking on the bumps. let's see what Jenson. If he can
:33:29. > :33:34.finished his lap, he has got a clear run into the last corner to
:33:34. > :33:41.13. He has got Perez in the Sauber in front, so he has just exited
:33:42. > :33:47.cleanly. I suspect this will be the fastest. He does go fastest by a
:33:47. > :33:54.three-tenths, a good lap of, on the super-soft Red Bull tired, Vettel
:33:54. > :34:03.is definitely in challenging -- on the super-soft Red Bull tyres.
:34:03. > :34:08.Ahead of Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Bruno Senna Williams is 13th, but a
:34:08. > :34:15.few changes up the top. Let's see. He is ninth at the moment. A
:34:15. > :34:19.Michael Schumacher has just gone fourth fastest. -- and Michael
:34:19. > :34:27.Schumacher. The information we have here is telling us that both Felipe
:34:27. > :34:33.Massa and Fernando Alonso in the Ferraris are on the prime tyre.
:34:33. > :34:38.Difficult to get a handle of how much performance gain varies from
:34:38. > :34:41.the super-soft tyres up but they are clearly getting -- but they are
:34:41. > :34:45.clearly getting a sight of. I don't think they think the super-soft
:34:45. > :34:51.will be the better Tyacke if they get through to the last part of
:34:51. > :34:58.qualifying. -- tyre. We are expecting that now, whereas earlier
:34:58. > :35:03.in the year, and that was not a given. Sergio Perez in 14 that the
:35:03. > :35:08.moment. A little bit of work to do there in the Sauber -- 14th at the
:35:08. > :35:17.moment. Jenson Button not running it quite as wide on the exit as
:35:17. > :35:22.some of the others. As he comes across the line, at that keeps him
:35:22. > :35:32.in six Macro. Off -- and that keeps him. Now we are on board with Lewis
:35:32. > :35:36.
:35:36. > :35:40.Hamilton and that keeps him in last chicane. So sweet. Lovely.
:35:40. > :35:44.beautiful. Really aggressive on the turning it, but the car just
:35:45. > :35:48.follows his hand movements, no instability from the rear of the
:35:48. > :35:55.car and that puts him in second place at this stage. So he is just
:35:55. > :35:59.behind Sebastian Vettel with a 1: 14.3. Hamilton tried to take
:35:59. > :36:04.another pole position in Montreal. Raikkonen now, tenth at the moment
:36:04. > :36:10.in the Lotus. Both of the Lotus cars still battling away. Maldonado,
:36:11. > :36:16.the Barcelona race winner. TEAM RADIO: My biggest problem is the
:36:16. > :36:20.lock-up. We saw that on the replay earlier, when he hits the bumps.
:36:20. > :36:24.That energy goes in through the front tyre and most of the
:36:25. > :36:31.suspension travel comes in through the side wall of the tyres, and
:36:31. > :36:41.once it starts bouncing it, he is then unloading the front wheel and
:36:41. > :36:43.
:36:43. > :36:48.locking up. He obviously feels that middle sector there but a strong
:36:48. > :36:52.final sector from Schumacher. goes into fourth, using the super-
:36:52. > :36:58.soft tyres. Gary, we are about halfway through the second part of
:36:58. > :37:03.qualifying are, what are you seeing in the pits, in terms of the tyres?
:37:03. > :37:07.I think Ferrari are playing quite a good game, they had a run on the
:37:07. > :37:13.harder of the compounds and had a side to lap but they have got
:37:13. > :37:20.themselves into a situation where they are going to get out on the
:37:20. > :37:23.red tyres and the track is cleaner, a bit more rubber down. So instead
:37:23. > :37:29.of potentially having to use two said, they are going to have one
:37:29. > :37:34.run on the soft tyres. -- two sets. We are hearing on the team radio
:37:34. > :37:40.that Nico Rosberg has been told to short shift. Would that be to save
:37:40. > :37:45.fuel or is there any show up there with that Mercedes? -- is then
:37:45. > :37:48.issue with that Mercedes? I heard that myself, I am not sure why.
:37:48. > :37:55.They had a clutch problem this morning but I don't know any more
:37:55. > :37:59.than that. I don't know if they have a problem but if they do, it
:37:59. > :38:04.will be hard to fix in the time available. Fernando Alonso weaving
:38:04. > :38:08.around aggressively as we have seen the Ferrari do to get the
:38:08. > :38:14.temperature into the front. Easy enough to get temperature into the
:38:14. > :38:20.rear, as he likes them up on acceleration, but the lighting also
:38:20. > :38:25.causes a massive amount of heat. Trying to keep it tidy past the
:38:25. > :38:35.grandstand on the outside, a fantastic viewing spot. Those in
:38:35. > :38:42.
:38:42. > :38:45.at regarding Fernando Alonso. has just equalled pretty much the
:38:45. > :38:51.best first sector, a couple of hundred so way from what Sebastian
:38:51. > :38:55.Vettel managed, so this is a good lap so far for the Ferrari.
:38:55. > :38:59.Confidence built on this track, if you can get through that first set
:38:59. > :39:09.and get into the more straightforward part of the track,
:39:09. > :39:14.
:39:14. > :39:17.which is about straight-line breaking. -- braking. If Fernando
:39:17. > :39:22.Alonso does a nice steady last chicane, this could take him into
:39:22. > :39:26.the top 10 comfortably. That Ferrari is riding the curve here
:39:26. > :39:32.really well, I think they have got the car Seca beautifully to absorb
:39:32. > :39:37.the bump. He goes second-fastest. Faster than Hamilton but not as
:39:37. > :39:41.quick as Sebastian Vettel, who still tops the times. We are
:39:41. > :39:51.looking at Daniel Ricciardo at the moment in the Toro Rosso Rosso. He
:39:51. > :39:52.
:39:52. > :39:57.is heading down to the same last what this delivers for the young
:39:58. > :40:03.Australian. He is 11th quickest at the moment. Good improvement on the
:40:03. > :40:08.previous lap. Kimi Raikkonen is then in 12, Paul di Resta 13th,
:40:08. > :40:13.Maldonado is only 14. Bruno Senna, Kobayashi and Sergio Perez are in
:40:13. > :40:22.the drop signed -- drop zone. Daniel Ricciardo seemed to be able
:40:22. > :40:28.to split the two Lotus cars, which had been joined at the hip.
:40:28. > :40:33.Raikkonen would have to run again, it would seem to suggest. Is he
:40:33. > :40:39.able to move up into the top 10? A little bit wide for the Sauber of
:40:39. > :40:43.Kobayashi. He is giving it his all to drag his team into the top 10. I
:40:43. > :40:49.thought the Sauber was looking good in the free practice sessions. It
:40:49. > :40:54.is so close at the moment. One second covers the top 12 at the
:40:54. > :41:01.moment, down to Kimi Raikkonen. It is a fractional amount, so every
:41:01. > :41:04.thousandth of a second counts. is not his personal best middle
:41:04. > :41:09.sector, the first sector was respectable, one-tenth away from
:41:09. > :41:17.the fastest, but he has got time to go another lap, another couple,
:41:17. > :41:21.actually, depending how much Ford - - fuel is on board. It will cost
:41:21. > :41:26.two-lap time, no doubt, they will burn and a couple of kilos per lap
:41:26. > :41:34.but it'll cost you around one-tenth of a second. That burn a couple of
:41:34. > :41:44.then, Felipe Massa and a tenth at the moment. Paul di Resta gets into
:41:44. > :41:51.
:41:51. > :41:55.top 10. That shunt he had yesterday mint -- meant the Williams crew had
:41:55. > :41:58.a lot of work to do last night, right up to the curfew, when the
:41:58. > :42:03.mechanics had to leave the car and return to it this morning but they
:42:03. > :42:07.got it dead, brilliant work by the team as ever. -- they got it out.
:42:07. > :42:12.Bruno Senna trying to get into the top 10. Neither he nor Maldonado
:42:12. > :42:20.are looking comfortable. Bruno Senna is 16. Felipe Massa has some
:42:20. > :42:24.work to do. That bit of track it -- traffic ahead of him. Felipe Massa
:42:24. > :42:32.has done a reasonable first sector but his middle sector is not
:42:32. > :42:38.particularly strong, 24.0, compared to 23.7 for the fastest from Vettel.
:42:38. > :42:45.At bit of oversteer has he tended - - a bit of oversteer as he turned
:42:45. > :42:51.in. He has never gone particularly well in Canada. Not enough to be
:42:51. > :42:57.comfortable. He has never been on the podium here. At the moment,
:42:57. > :43:01.he's going to struggle. The Lotus is just lacking real grip. They are
:43:01. > :43:05.running a little less downforce on this Canada track, not as much as
:43:05. > :43:11.it used to, because of the fact that you have DRS available to
:43:11. > :43:16.share the drag, but the Lotus is not comfortable. Grosjean has not
:43:16. > :43:21.been able to improve on either of his first two sectors, so could
:43:21. > :43:26.both of the Lotus cars be out of this shoot-out for the top 10?
:43:26. > :43:30.would be a surprise based on their recent performances. But it is a
:43:30. > :43:36.struggle. It is the first time Grosjean has raced here in Canada.
:43:36. > :43:42.It is not enough for Romain Grosjean, he has not made the top
:43:42. > :43:48.10. He has got one more lap. Maldonado is 15th, does this
:43:48. > :43:53.improve it? Yes, but Kimi Raikkonen is only up to tenth. Hulkenberg has
:43:53. > :44:00.crossed the line, 11th. The cat Felipe Massa attacking that Curbar,
:44:00. > :44:06.throwing himself that this -- a look at. Off -- lookout Felipe
:44:06. > :44:11.Massa attacking that kerb. Is there anyone else? Some -- Grosjean on a
:44:11. > :44:15.reasonable lap and so is Maldonado. I was giving it the thumbs down on
:44:15. > :44:19.Felipe Massa's lap but he did mighty well in that last sector to
:44:19. > :44:26.get himself in. Another man on the move is Maldonado, who has gone
:44:26. > :44:31.fastest of all in the first sector. This session may be over, but a few
:44:31. > :44:35.guys can finish their laps. We will see some changes. Yes, Maldonado
:44:35. > :44:40.desperately on target to get into the top 10 and push Kobayashi out
:44:40. > :44:45.but what about the Lotus cars? Grosjean trying to get a bit more.
:44:45. > :44:51.A good first sector, the Middle nothing special. He has done it, he
:44:51. > :44:55.is in seventh. But Raikkonen... And Maldonado hits the wall on the exit
:44:55. > :45:00.of the last corner. He keeps it going, just, but he has damaged the
:45:00. > :45:10.car. My goodness, he got away with that but he would have been in the
:45:10. > :45:13.
:45:13. > :45:20.of the top ten so McLaren breathe a sigh of relief and Maldonado, he is
:45:20. > :45:26.fast, but fast and furious, he does make the odd mistake. He was oh so
:45:26. > :45:30.close to drop it at the last corner, we know that is a tricky one.
:45:30. > :45:34.Maldonado. What a pity. He didn't need to throw everything into the
:45:34. > :45:39.last corner. He was already up. It just got away from him David.
:45:39. > :45:43.got up on the kerb as he went through the left-hander. He was
:45:43. > :45:47.nicely positioned as he carried speed into turn 13, but as he did
:45:47. > :45:53.the change of direction, he got up on top of that white kerb and
:45:53. > :45:58.launched the car. Destabilised and lost the back end. They had seen
:45:58. > :46:02.the purple time come up which meant he was faster than anybody in the
:46:02. > :46:09.first sector. Middle sector wasn't particularly special but it went
:46:09. > :46:14.wrong for him. Same wall that Senna -- Senna hit yesterday. It is being
:46:14. > :46:18.an expensive weekend for Williams so far. The cars that are out,
:46:18. > :46:22.Kamui Kobayashi and Raikkonen, Hulkenberg south as well but Paul
:46:22. > :46:28.di Resta is through. Ricciardo is out. Perez is out. Senna and
:46:28. > :46:35.Maldonado are out of qualifying.. You disappointed. I am disappointed
:46:35. > :46:40.but any way, I think, the last lap was not the best to get into Q3,
:46:40. > :46:45.for some rb we lose some performance during the qualifier,
:46:45. > :46:49.but tomorrow the race will be very long, we have a great pace, so
:46:49. > :46:55.looking forward. The guys are working late on Bruno's car, how
:46:55. > :47:01.damaged is your car? Not much t rear suspension, but nothing that
:47:01. > :47:06.big. Thank yo you very much. Let us get back to the pole position shoot
:47:06. > :47:08.out. The battle on and the final ten minutes of qualifying here in
:47:08. > :47:13.Montreal. Strailyaigt we have McLaren sending Lewis Hamilton out.
:47:14. > :47:18.He has had three pole positions in the past. He loves the circuit. Can
:47:18. > :47:24.he make it a fourth? Lewis Hamilton coming out on the super-soft but
:47:24. > :47:28.Jenson Button on the harder of the two tyres. They are probably a
:47:28. > :47:32.scrub set for Lewis Hamilton. Gary will be able to confirm that. But
:47:32. > :47:36.Jenson Button going out on a brand- new set of the prime tyre. The
:47:36. > :47:41.yellow marked tyre, so whether that is giving us an indication he is
:47:41. > :47:45.not finding the balance he needs on the super-soft tyre, or whether he
:47:46. > :47:50.just, because of the very low degradation he is using this as a
:47:50. > :47:57.sacrificial set to get his eye in for qualifying in this last part of
:47:57. > :48:02.the top ten shoot out. Kimi Raikkonen had problems with his car
:48:02. > :48:05.with pressure so that maybe explains his performance. Gary,
:48:06. > :48:09.what can we expect in this final part of qualifying? I think, you
:48:09. > :48:14.know, we are going to see the guy, you know you need to be on pole.
:48:14. > :48:18.Pole is very important. If you can get out of that DRS done? The first
:48:18. > :48:23.couple of laps which is what Vettel was good at. You want to get away
:48:23. > :48:28.from them. The tyres are looking stable. So there is not a big deal
:48:28. > :48:32.in starting on the super-soft tyre or the soft tyre. But as in Monaco,
:48:32. > :48:35.Vettel was in a good position in the middle stint to make up some
:48:35. > :48:40.position, so I think you might see Button trying to qualify on the
:48:40. > :48:45.hard tyre, because the balance is better. But I think we have to wait
:48:45. > :48:50.the session tout see it. It is going to be interesting the last
:48:50. > :48:54.five minutes. How much of a lap time difference are are we seeing
:48:54. > :48:59.at this track temperature twen the two tyres? You are looking at four
:48:59. > :49:04.tenths. Maybe five tenths. It's a deficit but you do need, you do
:49:04. > :49:09.need that balance to get that half second. We are watching Lewis
:49:09. > :49:13.Hamilton attacking this track. Still keeping his foot hard on the
:49:13. > :49:18.accelerator. Up towards turn eight he comes now. Under the bridge.
:49:18. > :49:25.Tricky right, left combination again, and he is backing it off a
:49:25. > :49:28.bit. He had arm fuls of oversteer he was wide on exit six which is
:49:28. > :49:32.where Sebastian Vettel ran wide last year allowing Jenson Button to
:49:32. > :49:37.pull off their amazing victory on the last lap. So he has felt, right,
:49:37. > :49:43.I haven't got my tyres in the right temperature, the right balance, so
:49:43. > :49:47.he is backed out of it. A bit of weefing on the straight, trying to
:49:48. > :49:53.warp the tyre compound. Move the surface, build temperature and have
:49:53. > :50:00.a good healthy brake. Whenever you see black lines being left on track,
:50:00. > :50:03.that is too much rear slip angle and that costs time. Ferrari has
:50:03. > :50:08.have had ten pole position, Williams have gone well here in the
:50:08. > :50:11.past. They are not going to do it this time because thiether are in
:50:11. > :50:16.the top ten. Mercedes, what can Nico Rosberg do? They came in
:50:16. > :50:20.feeling strong about their chances. Watch him through the chicane, they
:50:20. > :50:24.can use a fair bit of kerb. They have set the car up well in that
:50:24. > :50:27.respect. But I don't think this is going to be the ultimate pace.
:50:28. > :50:32.1.14.6. About half a second o off what Vettel did in the previous
:50:32. > :50:38.part of qualifying. Now we are beginning to see the times coming.
:50:38. > :50:44.Here come the frarroifsen Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. A good lap
:50:44. > :50:48.from Massa. 1.14.65. He goes fastest for the moment. A lot of
:50:48. > :50:58.pressure en masse is a to deliver. He was strong in Monaco, very close
:50:58. > :50:59.
:50:59. > :51:03.to Alonso, and that is a good opening lap from him, -- Massa.
:51:03. > :51:08.Vettel has gone purpose on both his first two sector, so let us see
:51:08. > :51:15.where the opening lap is for Lewis Hamilton. This could be a contest
:51:15. > :51:19.between Hamilton, Vettel and Massa. He goes fastest, ham -- Hamilton
:51:19. > :51:24.quicker than Felipe Massa, Jenson Button on a lap as well, but let us
:51:24. > :51:28.see what Sebastian Vettel can do. It's a quick lap. It is a 1.13.9
:51:28. > :51:32.from Sebastian Vettelment he is looking to make it back-to-back
:51:32. > :51:35.pole positions and he is half a second quicker than anyone else at
:51:35. > :51:40.the moment. Onboard with Fernando Alonso, the Ferrari looking so much
:51:40. > :51:46.better n the hands of Felipe Massa, as well. What can the world
:51:46. > :51:51.championship leader do? Remember, he has that 3 three point margins
:51:51. > :51:56.he needs to qualify up front. And he is second fastest. He is only
:51:56. > :52:00.two tenths slower than vet. He was very quick in the first sectors but
:52:00. > :52:04.amazingly, the Red Bulls have discovered real paint in this last
:52:04. > :52:09.sector, it is the longest shing of flat out, duration on the track and
:52:09. > :52:16.they will do about 14 seconds of 100 percent throttle. It is 60 odd
:52:16. > :52:20.percent of the lap is spent at 100%. Mark Webber is not as strong. That
:52:20. > :52:27.is seven tenths down on what we have seen from his team-mates. Will
:52:27. > :52:31.he come in and do another run? We see a replay of Massa getting up on
:52:31. > :52:37.the kerb. Similar to what we saw with Maldonado. Massa backs out
:52:37. > :52:40.early, allowing the car to regain stability, and accelerating for the
:52:40. > :52:45.line. Track temperature has been going up and down, we are up to 39
:52:45. > :52:49.degrees which is where we started. It dropped to 35 a while ago. This
:52:49. > :52:53.will after feming the teams and how they treat the tyre, a few degrees
:52:53. > :52:57.can make all the difference to the handling. I am not sure how
:52:57. > :53:02.reliable that is. There are clouds round but we haven't seen the sort
:53:02. > :53:09.of, the cloud cover, taking away the sunshine on the race track, so
:53:09. > :53:18.I suspect as we see Emerson, a vittor this this Grand Prix. Former
:53:18. > :53:21.winner of Canadian Grand Prix but not here, it was run at moss port,
:53:21. > :53:29.but great to see him here. Jenson Button, he has been struggling with
:53:29. > :53:32.lock up so far, he is only ninth fastest on the harder tyre, the
:53:32. > :53:37.yellow walled tyre. The hard over the two compounds. Are we going to
:53:37. > :53:45.see him put a set of super-softs on to finish the session? He is the
:53:45. > :53:53.only car on track at the moment. Paul di Resta has yet to go out.
:53:53. > :53:57.Whether he will set a time or bl it will be to cover if anyone else
:53:57. > :54:02.doesn't manage do anything spern special what a contrast you have
:54:02. > :54:07.Jenson Button in ninth and Vettel on pole with 13.9. Sebastian Vettel
:54:07. > :54:11.looking to try and win this race, he hasn't yet won this event, Red
:54:11. > :54:17.Bull haven't won this event ieth very rare. They have won every race
:54:17. > :54:21.on the calendar, except the new ones, but this is one of the one
:54:21. > :54:26.they are missing out on. They have won everywhere else in a few year,
:54:26. > :54:32.amazing record they have managed to achieve. David, you drove last
:54:32. > :54:36.year's Red Bull, last weekend? that was a joy to get behind the
:54:36. > :54:41.wheel of a relatively current Grand Prix car, and the current World
:54:41. > :54:45.Championship car of course. Despite all the years I drove the cars I
:54:45. > :54:49.never fails to amaze you how impressive the deceleration, how
:54:49. > :54:53.impressive the amount of grip there is when you do the turn in to the
:54:53. > :54:57.apex, it really does challenge your senses, and there is no question,
:54:57. > :55:01.we are witnessing a golden era of Formula One with the current crop
:55:01. > :55:04.of cars and drivers. Yes. Vettel one of the six World Champions,
:55:04. > :55:08.there is another one in the background and Vettel the only one
:55:08. > :55:12.of the six champions who hasn't won the race, he wants to put that
:55:12. > :55:16.right. At the moment he is doing everything he can by setting the
:55:17. > :55:20.fastest time. Button is back in the pits, does that mean it is over?
:55:20. > :55:24.Head restraint is coming out. I don't see him looking like he is
:55:24. > :55:29.about to step out of the car. He is holding the the air cooler which
:55:29. > :55:33.the driver uses to lower the cockpit temperature. I suspects
:55:34. > :55:38.they are making some last minute change. He only has a minute-and-a-
:55:38. > :55:42.half. He won't have time to get round. Has the he thrown in the
:55:42. > :55:47.towel? He will start on the yellow tyre, think he is going for a
:55:47. > :55:50.different strategy to these guys who are going on the super-soft
:55:50. > :55:55.tyre and going for ultimate performance, so Vettel will be
:55:55. > :55:58.interested to see that, because he played that game in Monaco, but
:55:58. > :56:02.here in Montreal it is easier to overtake as Jenson Button
:56:02. > :56:08.discovered last year when he came from last to win this thing, and
:56:08. > :56:12.beat Vettel in a final lap. Vettel is on a good lap: He set fastest
:56:12. > :56:15.first sector. Now Alonso has gone fastest and Hamilton has gone
:56:15. > :56:19.fastest in the mid sector, we are witnessing a great climax to
:56:19. > :56:24.qualifying. Here comes Sebastian Vettel. It is looking like a good
:56:24. > :56:28.lap. Will it be enough? 1.13.7. Quicker than before, but the
:56:28. > :56:31.Ferrari and the McLaren of Alonso and Hamilton are going fast.
:56:31. > :56:37.Managing Director my goodness he skirted the wall there, is it
:56:37. > :56:41.enough for Hamilton? No, he is second fastest. Vettel fastest,
:56:41. > :56:45.Hamilton second. We are still waiting for Alonso. Alonso could do
:56:45. > :56:50.it. He is down, a tenth down in the middle sector. But of course, right
:56:50. > :56:55.there with Vettel, so all comes down, to this last section, he has
:56:55. > :56:57.a clean run for the line. Here we go, out in the final corner.
:56:57. > :57:03.Fernando Alonso chasing pole position, Vettel is on top at the
:57:03. > :57:09.moment. It is enough for Ferrari? He has not done it. He is third
:57:09. > :57:13.fastest and Alonso cannot match Vettel's time. Here comes Webber.
:57:13. > :57:17.He displaced Rosberg, Massa is sixth. Grosjean is seventh. What
:57:17. > :57:20.about Michael Schumacher? He is on a lap, but his last lap wasn't
:57:20. > :57:24.anything particularly special, he has done a personal best in the
:57:24. > :57:29.first sector, he is really going to have to throw something out here.
:57:29. > :57:34.He has backed out. He is not happy with the traffic. Hand coming out.
:57:34. > :57:39.That is an indication that was Massa he has to pass as he came
:57:39. > :57:43.autoof turn three and four. Pole position for Red Bull again and
:57:43. > :57:46.back-to-back pole positions here in Canada for Sebastian Vettel. And of
:57:46. > :57:51.course, for the Red Bull team it is their third pole position of the
:57:51. > :57:57.season, that is a decent margin, three tenths of a second over Lewis
:57:57. > :58:02.Hamilton, who once again confirms consistent performance, beaten to
:58:02. > :58:08.pole by Vettel. Different strategy from Jenson Button. He will start
:58:08. > :58:10.from tenth place on the harder compound tyre and hope that that
:58:10. > :58:14.workforce him. Paul di Resta qualifying eighth in the forces for,
:58:15. > :58:20.he will be pleased about that and Grosjean up there as well. He is in
:58:20. > :58:24.seventh in the Lotus, but it is Red Bull that has merged ahead once
:58:24. > :58:28.again, Sebastian Vettel, pole winner in Bahrain earlier this year,
:58:28. > :58:32.and Monaco pole went to his team- mate Mark Webber and pole position
:58:32. > :58:37.here, for Sebastian Vettel, trying to correct the record book and put
:58:37. > :58:40.in win in his record book himself, he wants to take the month yarl
:58:40. > :58:46.victory. Jut, as we know, will be trying something a bit different
:58:46. > :58:50.when it comes to the race tomorrow. Be will that be the correct
:58:51. > :58:54.strategy. He was the man who made it work last year in the changeable
:58:54. > :59:00.condition, but weather forecast for tomorrow is warmer than today. So,
:59:01. > :59:05.let us wait and see what happens for Jenson but Paul di Resta, he
:59:05. > :59:11.will be happy with that qualifying. The man that seems to have
:59:11. > :59:16.rediscovered his qualifying mojo, what an impressive lap. That was a
:59:16. > :59:26.remarkable lap by Sebastian Vettel. And that is incredibly satisfying
:59:26. > :59:26.
:59:26. > :00:13.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds
:00:13. > :00:17.for the double World Champion. LEE MCKENZIE: Son not quite normal
:00:17. > :00:22.service resumed but Sebastian Vettel does get his second pole
:00:22. > :00:26.position of the season, that is sure to be a relief. It is a great
:00:26. > :00:31.pole position as well. Not a track where he has had great success, but
:00:31. > :00:35.a dominant pole position. He spoke to Tom Clarkson and earlier.
:00:35. > :00:40.Congratulations on a bomb at pole position, were you surprised that
:00:41. > :00:45.the gap to Lewis -- on a dominant pole position? A little bit. In
:00:45. > :00:50.practice, you never know exactly what other people have done but we
:00:50. > :00:56.knew it was extremely tired, so in qualifying we expected it to be
:00:56. > :00:59.tight again -- extremely tight. We were able to improve on the last
:00:59. > :01:05.couple of runs on the super-soft tyre and fortunately, the others
:01:05. > :01:08.couldn't keep up, so it is good for us but the race is tomorrow, there
:01:08. > :01:14.have been no points scored so far, but the car was pretty good at the
:01:14. > :01:19.end. You left nothing on the table. You always think there is something
:01:19. > :01:23.here or there but I was very happy. It is not easy to get the complete
:01:23. > :01:28.perfect lap everywhere. So many corners here and so many chicanes
:01:28. > :01:35.and quick changes of directions. It is a short amount of time you have
:01:35. > :01:41.to decide when to brake, and it has to be perfect and has to be good
:01:41. > :01:44.from the start. From the last chicane, maybe, two or 300, but all
:01:44. > :01:48.in all, I was very happy. in all, I was very happy.
:01:48. > :01:52.Quite rightly and you were impressed as well. He talks about
:01:53. > :01:59.the last chicane. We join him here at the first of the chicanes,
:01:59. > :02:03.riding it out towards the wall in to turn five when Olivier Panis
:02:03. > :02:08.crashed many years ago. This is where he lost the victory to Jenson
:02:09. > :02:12.Button last year. No such problems when he goes into one of the tricky
:02:12. > :02:18.corners as you go under the Bridge, there is a change of track surface,
:02:18. > :02:24.and absolutely hitting his apex. As we come down to what turned 10,
:02:24. > :02:29.this was the only obvious mistake, as he gets to the end of the
:02:29. > :02:34.braking zone, a little bit wide but he makes a great recovery. How much
:02:35. > :02:40.you think that last season will play on his mind? -- do you think?
:02:40. > :02:43.It will play on him for the rest of his career, but it will -- he can
:02:43. > :02:48.his career, but it will -- he can make it better this weekend. Mark
:02:48. > :02:54.Webber started fourth tomorrow. De Beers your thoughts on that
:02:54. > :02:59.session. -- give us. Given the session we have had, I was very
:02:59. > :03:05.happy. When they told me I was fourth, I thought, it could have
:03:05. > :03:12.been worse. I didn't get the most out of it, really. I certainly left
:03:12. > :03:15.some time on the table, it was... It was disappointed not to get it
:03:15. > :03:21.all together when it really counts, and that is what we have been doing
:03:21. > :03:25.a lot in qualifying and today, we didn't quite get it. Where do you
:03:25. > :03:29.think you have been losing time compared to Sebastian? He looks a
:03:29. > :03:38.bit more comfortable coming off the chicanes and he looks like he has
:03:38. > :03:44.done a better job in the hairpins. What about tomorrow, you have a a
:03:44. > :03:54.good pace? The car on Sundays has always been solid. It is a bit
:03:54. > :03:54.
:03:55. > :04:00.warmer but it is not anything for Lewis Hamilton came here hoping to
:04:00. > :04:06.have his fourth pole position. How Our he will be disappointed, he had
:04:06. > :04:14.a triple run of poor positions. looked at the time difference at
:04:14. > :04:18.the end and he said, that is a lot. Wed you think he lost it? I think
:04:18. > :04:19.he used all of the potential of the car so he will be looking at the
:04:19. > :04:25.engineers and asking where they are engineers and asking where they are
:04:25. > :04:32.losing the pace. Here is the last corner. There is no question he is
:04:32. > :04:36.fully committed. He ran it right to the wall. Look at that, absolutely
:04:36. > :04:39.kissing the concrete. Let's hear kissing the concrete. Let's hear
:04:39. > :04:45.from Lewis. P2 on the grid, congratulations,
:04:45. > :04:48.but are you surprised by the gap to Sebastian? I am not. I think
:04:48. > :04:54.yesterday we were looking quite quick and then this morning, we
:04:54. > :04:57.realised we weren't that quick and the others were seriously fast. I
:04:57. > :05:01.also knew last night, I thought Ferrari were holding back a little
:05:02. > :05:05.bit but I didn't realise the Red Bull would be so quick today. But
:05:05. > :05:11.they were and we have struggled generally with our tyres as you can
:05:11. > :05:17.see with Jenson, and we had to use a lot of them just to get to Q3.
:05:17. > :05:21.Fortunately, I had a new set I was able to use. Just nailing a lap
:05:21. > :05:27.today has been so difficult for us, but I am really happy that I was
:05:27. > :05:30.able to use those tyres on the last lap. Didn't expect the front row.
:05:30. > :05:36.And you did nail it, you got very close to the wall of champions.
:05:36. > :05:39.have got to get as close as you can, just give it a little kiss. You are
:05:39. > :05:44.starting on the dirty side of the grid, do you see that as an
:05:44. > :05:47.advantage? I don't know what the differences generally. A lot of
:05:47. > :05:52.drivers drive over that there decide on a qualifying lap, it is
:05:52. > :05:55.the shortest way from the last corner to the start line. Lewis
:05:55. > :05:59.Hamilton not looking too disappointed but what about Jenson
:05:59. > :06:05.Button? He has tried to turn disappointment into a different
:06:05. > :06:09.strategy. He has not been able to get these tyres and the car working
:06:09. > :06:13.in qualifying. He is the only man to start on the softer tyres.
:06:13. > :06:19.hear from him. What is happening in with your
:06:19. > :06:24.qualifying? Everybody knows you are a fabulous driver, what is going
:06:24. > :06:28.wrong? Haven't got a clue, and I would love to know. You don't have
:06:28. > :06:33.three bad qualifying sessions and understand what is going wrong. The
:06:33. > :06:38.first view of the year were quite good, and then suddenly, I'm just
:06:38. > :06:43.inside the top 10 -- the first three of the year. I don't know but
:06:43. > :06:53.hopefully we will solve it. When you compare your traces with those
:06:53. > :06:55.
:06:55. > :07:00.of Lewis, where is he gaining on It has been a good day for Ferrari,
:07:00. > :07:06.they have had their best qualifying season so far. Gary Anderson caught
:07:06. > :07:12.up with Stefano earlier. Lots of new pits, that is your best
:07:12. > :07:18.qualifying this year. The car is improving race by race, this is a
:07:18. > :07:22.our objective and I hope that in the next couple of days, we can be
:07:22. > :07:27.ready for a pole position, because I think it is the right time to
:07:27. > :07:32.have it. Anyway, let's see tomorrow. Any other new developments for
:07:33. > :07:38.future races? That has to be the target, it has to be race by race,
:07:38. > :07:43.otherwise the others will jump. It is church a short class of vocation,
:07:43. > :07:47.such short gaps, if you stop it is finished -- such short class a
:07:47. > :07:51.vocation. Fernando seems to be enjoying this battle with the car
:07:51. > :07:56.and everything. That is the atmosphere he likes, so we need to
:07:56. > :08:00.improve the car and he will be the one we go to. Good luck tomorrow.
:08:00. > :08:05.Another great performance by the championship leader, Fernando will
:08:05. > :08:10.be happy with third. A remarkable comeback from Ferrari, leading the
:08:10. > :08:14.world championship, attacking at the track. Let's see if he is
:08:14. > :08:18.smiling, here is Fernando Alonso. You're very quick in practice and
:08:18. > :08:23.to have delivered in qualifying, how are you feeling? Very happy,
:08:23. > :08:30.because the weekend was by far the best weekend so far for us in terms
:08:30. > :08:33.of level of performance and competitiveness, and qualifying is
:08:33. > :08:38.always the time to deliver and confirm all of the good or bad
:08:38. > :08:45.feelings in the weekend, so we have had a very smooth weekend and it
:08:45. > :08:49.seems that the car keeps working well. It is the best position so
:08:49. > :08:53.far this year, the same as Barcelona, and tomorrow we need to
:08:53. > :08:56.finish the job. You have a lot of new parts on the car this weekend,
:08:56. > :09:01.you have made a lot of progress, do you see this as Ferrari being
:09:01. > :09:06.frontrunners from here on? I think so. I think that is the best news
:09:07. > :09:09.for us. We have been competitive in Barcelona, second in the race,
:09:09. > :09:15.competitive in Monaco in a different circuit and we have been
:09:15. > :09:19.on the podium. In Canada, we are fighting for the first row of the
:09:19. > :09:24.grid. Three different tracks and three more or less competitive
:09:24. > :09:29.weekends. This is the best news. Sir Fernando Alonso is a happy man
:09:29. > :09:39.but another have a man is Paul di Resta who starts in a -- 8 tomorrow.
:09:39. > :09:39.
:09:39. > :09:42.You must be placed there that went We near the climate would be
:09:42. > :09:47.different -- we knew the climate would be different today and I am
:09:47. > :09:50.glad we stuck with it because we were able to get into Q3 and the
:09:50. > :09:57.car on the long run look that looked equally competitive
:09:57. > :10:03.yesterday. -- looked equally competitive. You are emerging as a
:10:03. > :10:08.team leader in Force India, G were not as strong in qualifying as in
:10:08. > :10:14.Monaco, but it must represent a step forward from the car in terms
:10:14. > :10:18.of performance? I think the Canada package has shown strong. The race
:10:18. > :10:23.place in Monaco was good but I am not going to get to carried away,
:10:23. > :10:26.because when we get to the race, it will be the true potential, but the
:10:26. > :10:30.focus is making sure we have a good car tomorrow. There are points up
:10:30. > :10:34.for grabs and we are ahead of competitors, so to make a
:10:34. > :10:40.difference, we need to use this opportunity. Tell us about the
:10:40. > :10:45.start, things can get messy out there. It came up in the briefing,
:10:45. > :10:50.it does seem to jam up a little bit in the first of two terms. You want
:10:50. > :10:56.to be as far forward as possible, dashed to terms. But I could have
:10:56. > :11:00.got one position further up. But it is the luck of the draw, and that
:11:00. > :11:03.the main thing is to keep your nose clean, because there is nothing to
:11:04. > :11:08.suggest how many stops we will be doing tomorrow and it is playing
:11:08. > :11:11.the game, being there at the end is the game, being there at the end is
:11:11. > :11:15.when it counts. We hope it goes well for you tomorrow. Let's take a
:11:15. > :11:25.look at the grade. Sebastian Vettel gets his second pole position of
:11:25. > :11:54.
:11:54. > :11:59.the year. Lewis Hamilton is out of Q1. Pedro de la Rosa gets
:11:59. > :12:01.ahead of the Marussias. Karthikeyan ahead of the Marussias. Karthikeyan
:12:01. > :12:07.is at the back of the grid. Strategy is always important,
:12:07. > :12:12.particularly around here. What can we expect tomorrow? There is no
:12:12. > :12:15.data from last year and Jenson Button actually visited the pits
:12:15. > :12:19.last year six times, but I think a two-stop race strategy looks the
:12:19. > :12:23.two-stop race strategy looks the best solution. It is a little bit
:12:24. > :12:30.faster than the one stop, so I wouldn't be surprised to see both.
:12:30. > :12:33.I think that will be the best way to get rid of those and make sure
:12:33. > :12:37.you have the best tyres. I wouldn't you have the best tyres. I wouldn't
:12:37. > :12:40.disagree, I think it would be possible to do one stop because of
:12:40. > :12:45.the low degradation but there are so many people taking trips through
:12:45. > :12:50.the gravel and the grass that we will see a fuse -- flat spot.
:12:50. > :12:56.year was a thriller but it hasn't provided any data. But will it take
:12:56. > :12:59.a brave team to lead it and will Red Bull look to do that? I think
:12:59. > :13:03.they will, they will plan to do a two-stop strategy and see how far
:13:03. > :13:08.the car can go before the tyres start to fall away, and that then
:13:08. > :13:11.you have to pit. If it is lap 25, they may do one, but I think they
:13:11. > :13:17.they may do one, but I think they will do a to stop. You can see
:13:17. > :13:22.highlights tomorrow night and go on BBC One and BBC One H D. It is late,
:13:22. > :13:27.but don't worry about work on Monday. Gary, David, thank you for
:13:27. > :13:30.your company and thank you very much to you. The last time, the
:13:30. > :13:34.person who got pole position on the Saturday and started at the front
