:01:07. > :01:11.Grand Prix.. It is my home where lots of things started. The flags

:01:11. > :01:17.are waving to greet home their idol and hero. That was a beautiful

:01:17. > :01:22.moment, because a German driver, wins a home race, an amazing

:01:22. > :01:27.sensation. Excited. So many people, lots of people cheering for us,

:01:27. > :01:33.knowing the Grandstand is sold out. Michael Schumacher wins the German

:01:33. > :01:37.Grand Prix for Ferrari. Certainly proud that partly I am a bit

:01:38. > :01:43.responsible for the nice stories we are going through. Sebastian Vettel

:01:43. > :01:52.you are the World Champion, you the man. I have seen him growing up. It

:01:52. > :01:57.makes me proud. Who knows what happens next? I want to be in the

:01:57. > :02:02.middle of that podium I might be possible this year. There is no

:02:02. > :02:07.mistaking we are in Schumacher territory. We are in Vettel

:02:07. > :02:12.territory too. Two driver, two rivals and nine World Championships

:02:12. > :02:16.between them. David Coulthard joins me, how much does the legacy of

:02:16. > :02:20.motor sport owe to Michael Schumacher? A great deal. Seven

:02:20. > :02:22.World Championship, 1 victories and he is till there, aiming for that

:02:22. > :02:27.top spot in the second career in Formula One. Sebastian Vettel came

:02:27. > :02:30.here as a young man to watch Michael race so he has inspired a

:02:31. > :02:34.generation. Most of these drives never imagined they would get the

:02:34. > :02:38.chance to race and beat him in some instances. That is right. You could

:02:38. > :02:40.argue whether he is as strong this time round as the first time, but

:02:40. > :02:43.nonetheless it is a great opportunity for these young drivers

:02:43. > :02:49.to say I raced against the most successful driver in the history of

:02:49. > :02:51.the sport. You have had a good record in Germany. Pole positions

:02:51. > :02:57.and you race from the German Touring Car Championship. What is

:02:57. > :03:02.it like to be out in front of the fans. They are very passionate.

:03:02. > :03:06.Verging on bizarre with some of the get ups and outfits and the way

:03:06. > :03:10.they celebrate and embrace the weekend. A lot of beer is drank!

:03:10. > :03:16.They are in the Grandstands and they support motor sport here.

:03:16. > :03:26.There is a lot of similarities to Silverstone maybe not so much beer.

:03:26. > :03:48.

:03:48. > :03:54.They They couple out in fost and their focus is on Sebastian Vettel,

:03:54. > :04:00.he sits third in the Championship he has Fernando Alonso and Mark

:04:00. > :04:06.Webber in front of him. Lewis Hamilton is fourth. Jenson Button

:04:06. > :04:09.only managed seven in the last six race, that is reflected in the

:04:10. > :04:13.constructors championship. Red Bull has a commanding lead from Ferrari,

:04:13. > :04:18.and interestingly, Lotus are above McLaren, despite not having won

:04:18. > :04:21.race this season. David, if Sebastian Vettel wins this race, it

:04:21. > :04:25.still won't give him the lead of the Championship. He is not going

:04:25. > :04:29.to enjoy being that far off. He is not what he was used to last year,

:04:29. > :04:32.this stage of the year he was guaranteed to win the Championship,

:04:32. > :04:36.but there is still more than 275 points available, as we speak, so

:04:36. > :04:40.much more than the leader of the World Champion has on the board, so

:04:41. > :04:45.a hell of a long way to go. What about McLaren, they have had more

:04:45. > :04:49.podiums than anybody else and they are sitting fourth. Even Lotus are

:04:49. > :04:52.ahead of them and they haven't won a race. I wouldn't be surprised if

:04:52. > :04:55.they are able to achieve that soon. They stkpwraet pace, McLaren will

:04:55. > :05:00.be disappointed they are slipping, because as Eddie will remind us,

:05:00. > :05:04.that is where the money is for the team, the glory is where with the

:05:04. > :05:08.driver's Championship but it is important to win the constructors.

:05:08. > :05:12.We have had seven different winner, one was surprising. Pastor

:05:12. > :05:18.Maldonado has prove head is quick and controversial. He has been

:05:18. > :05:24.speaking to Tom. Pastor Maldonado is coming through the final turn,

:05:24. > :05:29.to make history, Pastor Maldonado wins in Spain. I remember before

:05:29. > :05:34.the victory, no-one was here. is Maldonado. After the victory

:05:34. > :05:40.everyone is looking for me, everyone is here. There is

:05:40. > :05:44.Maldonado. This year I crash with Lewis, and everyone is looking for

:05:44. > :05:50.that. At that moment I was three seconds quicker than him, fighting

:05:50. > :05:58.for the podium he was in brig trouble with the tyres. I don't

:05:58. > :06:02.know why. I didn't expect him to put me out of the track. I didn't

:06:02. > :06:09.ex naect from himment. Next time, if I will be in the same position,

:06:09. > :06:15.I will do the same. Do you get frustrated that drivers are calling

:06:15. > :06:19.you the dangerous one now. He is a driver that doesn't respect other

:06:19. > :06:24.drivers. Perez and Maldonado contact. I never had have in the

:06:24. > :06:28.past this kind of problems, even with embracing and fighting a

:06:28. > :06:32.Championship, I won the Championship, he was second,

:06:32. > :06:37.everything was clear. No problem. Have the drivers spoken about it,

:06:37. > :06:43.are they concerned about Pastor Maldonado. Yes everyone has

:06:43. > :06:47.concerns about him. This year he is talking a lot.. These guys will

:06:47. > :06:52.never learn unless they do something. He is a very dangerous

:06:52. > :06:59.driver and it can hurt someone. you don't want anything dangerous,

:06:59. > :07:03.you go back home, and stay there. am disappointed. He has used his

:07:03. > :07:13.car as a weapon. Here you learn every day. You need to learn from

:07:13. > :07:18.the mistake, and try to improve for the future. If we take a look at

:07:18. > :07:21.how Pastor Maldonado's season has gone, it is all-or-nothing for the

:07:21. > :07:26.Venezuelan, it was all in Barcelona when he got that victory but since

:07:26. > :07:32.then it has been nothing, not a single point since then, he says he

:07:32. > :07:37.is not ready to change his driving style. Should he be? He is fast and

:07:37. > :07:41.deliver, he is a team leader at William, it is his racing style he

:07:41. > :07:46.needs to question. Irrespective of what he thinks, it is down to the

:07:46. > :07:50.stewards, they have more data available. They is decided to give

:07:50. > :07:56.him penalties and reprimand, you can't ignore the referee or you

:07:56. > :07:59.will get a red card. Sergio Perez had a lot of anger but they did

:07:59. > :08:03.have previous from practise -- practise in Monaco, how much buzz

:08:03. > :08:09.of that he was voicing? There might be an element of that, that is life.

:08:09. > :08:13.Get over it, you move on and deal with the next incident. You know,

:08:13. > :08:18.various points ev driver will have that frustration with one person,

:08:18. > :08:23.last year it was Massa and Hamilton, and again, if in doubt, refer to

:08:23. > :08:25.what the stewards decide and take action from there. Do you believe

:08:25. > :08:28.other drivers are concerned and think Pastor Maldonado is

:08:28. > :08:33.dangerous? I don't think they think he is dangerous, I think they

:08:33. > :08:37.probably think he is very forceful, and you know he won't give an inch.

:08:37. > :08:42.But Michael was like that in his first career, you raced with that

:08:42. > :08:45.in mind, so, you know, dangerous I think is a bit of a strong word. I

:08:46. > :08:49.was disappointed in Monaco where he drove off the racing line, he said

:08:49. > :08:53.he didn't but he absolutely did, because you can see an analysis and

:08:53. > :08:58.cut in front of another car, that is a deliberate accuse act and that

:08:58. > :09:02.should not be allowed. If it happened in norm -- normal racing

:09:02. > :09:05.that is going to be the case. Pastor Maldonado versus the rest of

:09:05. > :09:15.the grid is just one headline making the news this weekend. Here

:09:15. > :09:15.

:09:16. > :09:20.is Ben with the round up of the rest. Having won his second Grand

:09:20. > :09:24.Prix of the season, Mark Webber wasted little time in announcing he

:09:24. > :09:28.will stay with Red Bull for another year despite having held talks with

:09:28. > :09:31.Ferrari, what inspired him to stay. Continuity has been important for

:09:31. > :09:36.the whole situation, I enjoy working with the guys here,

:09:36. > :09:42.infrastructure is massive, in relation to what it was, Adrian has

:09:42. > :09:44.a big influence on how the company runs and how the car perform,

:09:44. > :09:48.Christian pulling everything together and keeping everyone

:09:48. > :09:55.motivated, so a lot of, a lot more heads there, and a lot more money

:09:55. > :09:59.as well, to get the job done. Felipe Massa's position may no

:09:59. > :10:03.longer be under threat but he is aware there are plenty other

:10:03. > :10:08.drivers chasing his seat. It's a big team. It's a team I would say

:10:08. > :10:14.most of the drivers would love to drive for Ferrari, you know, so,

:10:14. > :10:22.nothing is really a problem for me, it doesn't do anything for me, just

:10:22. > :10:26.the result is what is really important for me. There is no news

:10:27. > :10:32.on Hamilton's plans but it sounds like he wants to sort out his

:10:32. > :10:36.contract before the end of the season. We are at the half way

:10:36. > :10:38.point now, getting it done soon would be nice so I can focus on

:10:38. > :10:44.trying to win the World Championship because that is the

:10:44. > :10:49.most important thing.'S Driver whose future in F is undecided.

:10:49. > :10:51.Muem might be a seven times World Champion but as he proved in Friday,

:10:51. > :10:55.even the best can be distracted. was on the radio, I was doing

:10:55. > :11:01.things on the steering wheel, and just not focused properly and

:11:01. > :11:03.touched the white line. McLaren had a disappointing British Grand Prix

:11:03. > :11:06.finishing eighth and tenth but Jenson Button has been in this

:11:07. > :11:10.position before and understands the challenge. The only thing you do

:11:10. > :11:18.about improving that is to add bits to the cars and that is what we

:11:18. > :11:21.have here, you know, we have a good update here, mechanically and

:11:21. > :11:25.aerodynamically, you never know until you drive it. Lots of teams

:11:25. > :11:29.and drives including Jenson Button and McLaren are relying on the

:11:29. > :11:33.updates. Keeping across all things technical is Gary Anderson. What

:11:33. > :11:37.can you tell us about who has brought what? McLaren arrived

:11:37. > :11:43.with80% of new body surfaces top car, that is the major part of the

:11:43. > :11:47.car they have changed since their poor result, I think you could call

:11:47. > :11:52.nit Silverstone, this includes new front brake, a lot more heat going

:11:52. > :11:59.into the front tyres to warm then up in qualifying. More important

:11:59. > :12:02.the side pots. The radiator input is more sculptured. So, much more

:12:02. > :12:06.airflow coming from the front of the car, down through the side of

:12:06. > :12:10.the car. You can see that runs into a nice coke bottle section as we

:12:10. > :12:15.call it. Just before the Vodafone there, the airflow, you can see it

:12:15. > :12:19.comes from the front of the car, down through this duct under a more

:12:19. > :12:25.exaggerated exhaust pipe bulge. This is to help the diffuser. This

:12:25. > :12:31.is where the air goes down, it makes a diffuser work more

:12:31. > :12:35.consistently. It is important for is a saving the rear tyres so a lot

:12:35. > :12:38.of developments, a rough couple of days here with the weather, and

:12:38. > :12:42.this morn's session Hamilton ended up second to Fernando Alonso, and

:12:42. > :12:46.Jenson Button was back in 24th place, but he has hit most of his

:12:46. > :12:52.time rung on high fuel, but at the end of the day we have to see what

:12:52. > :12:55.happens in qualifying. Gary, thank you. We will find out shortly.

:12:55. > :13:05.David is going to the commentary box, because it is time for

:13:05. > :13:19.

:13:19. > :13:29.qualifying for the German Grand underway and it is the two Force

:13:29. > :13:34.Indias that take to the track fist, Marussia is out as is Senna,

:13:34. > :13:39.qualifying under a cloudy sky but for the moment a dry track. That is

:13:39. > :13:42.perhaps why we are seeing a few more going out straight away. Gary,

:13:42. > :13:48.leerically they want to get in lapse quickly here what can we look

:13:49. > :13:51.forward to in this first part? yes you have to get out, the rain

:13:51. > :13:55.could come any time, when it does it is heavy. You can't run that

:13:55. > :13:59.risk, you have to get out there. Most of the cars at the moment

:13:59. > :14:04.going out on the while wall tyre, the medium tyre, it is good for

:14:04. > :14:08.three or four laps, they will get the temperatures up to working, the

:14:09. > :14:16.best possible way, and then look a and see what happens. I think you

:14:16. > :14:19.will be looking at a high 16.8. That is going to be a quick lap.

:14:20. > :14:24.first cars are out there, fans getting a chance to see the cars in

:14:24. > :14:27.action in anger, for qualifying. Hulkenberg then in the Force India

:14:27. > :14:33.is the first one to take to the track and see what he can can do,

:14:33. > :14:38.building up that speed. The out-lap crucial to getting the tyre

:14:38. > :14:41.temperature up. Started his car racing here at Hockenheim and raced

:14:41. > :14:45.here for Williams in 2010. Qualified tenth on that occasion

:14:45. > :14:50.that was a good effort. David, talk us round what he has to achieve

:14:50. > :14:55.here. He has gone through turn one, kept it tidy, there is a temptation

:14:55. > :15:00.to carry a bit too much speed there and you end up running wide on the

:15:00. > :15:04.artificial grass. Ly the two and three, three is a poergs, and then

:15:04. > :15:12.down the longest strait. As you can see it starts with a large curve,

:15:12. > :15:17.up to about 200mph, with a DRS open. Tricky braking into this tight

:15:17. > :15:22.hairpin. Classic hairpin. This will be a scene of overtakes tomorrow,

:15:22. > :15:25.then through the kink at turn seven. Flat out, down into the mers

:15:26. > :15:30.disarena at turn eight. Tricky one this, because as you exit you have

:15:30. > :15:34.to pull the car back to the left hand side and immediately into the

:15:34. > :15:39.130mph apex turn ten, then this is where I think it gets interesting,

:15:39. > :15:43.this is where you meet the history of Hockenheim. You come into the

:15:43. > :15:50.old stadium. The track surface change, narrower than any other

:15:50. > :16:00.part of the track. Then he has traffic ahead of him. The Toro

:16:00. > :16:03.

:16:03. > :16:13.Rosso tries to get out of the way. flying lap Sunday's hard tyres.

:16:13. > :16:18.Let's see where his team mate is, di Resta. The let's see what

:16:18. > :16:23.Sebastian Vettel has been doing. I think we will see that a throughout

:16:23. > :16:27.qualifying, run into deeper. Yes, he baled out of the braking very

:16:27. > :16:33.early to avoid the flat spotting of the tyres. Nico Rosberg coming to

:16:33. > :16:39.the end of his opening lap. Maldonado has gone slightly quicker,

:16:39. > :16:42.so we expect at these times to his -- drop significantly as the

:16:42. > :16:48.drivers find where they racetrack is. There was a heavy downpour at

:16:48. > :16:53.the free practice which will have washed away a lot of the rubber.

:16:53. > :16:57.Nico Rosberg lowers the time even further. We are in the air these

:16:57. > :17:04.stages of Q1, where we will do so because from the hole qualifying

:17:04. > :17:09.sequence -- in the early stages. Michael Schumacher is second

:17:09. > :17:16.fastest, but Jenson Button has just gone quickest, 1: 16. Second in the

:17:16. > :17:24.McLaren. And there Fernando Alonso goes fastest. On board with Red

:17:24. > :17:32.Bull. Coming through turn tenor, the entry to the old stadium. The

:17:32. > :17:37.apex is taken at just under 180 mph, a little bit of artificial grass

:17:37. > :17:43.and using the apex to straighten the car as much as com port --

:17:43. > :17:50.possible. Confidence as his DRS was open. And a double right-hander to

:17:50. > :17:56.end the lap. Only good enough for fifth that the moment. 16.6, he is

:17:56. > :18:01.in the mix. Bruno Senna going across the line in seventh, that is

:18:01. > :18:05.a better performers. Kobayashi has just gone second, a good lap in the

:18:05. > :18:12.Sauber from Kamui Kobayashi. You are on board with Mark Webber, the

:18:12. > :18:20.win at Silverstone last time out. - - the winner. I the 10th at the

:18:20. > :18:25.moment. And Lewis Hamilton, another faster lap, a 1: 16.2. As we were

:18:25. > :18:28.looking on board at Mark Webber, I was reading his dashboard and it

:18:28. > :18:33.was saying plus half a second. Looking at the time in screen in

:18:33. > :18:39.the commentary box, it was going green, green, which says it is in

:18:39. > :18:46.his best sectors. But it means he has left his morning's Tine as a

:18:46. > :18:49.lap delta, he did a 16.4. He has only done a 16.9. So he likes to

:18:49. > :18:55.keep a reference from his best lap in the morning session to give

:18:55. > :19:02.feedback on where he is. So the early stages are completed. Romain

:19:02. > :19:07.Grosjean is why it. He is one of three drivers who have a five paste

:19:07. > :19:11.gear block that fireplace gearbox penalty. Nico Rosberg is one of

:19:11. > :19:15.them and at the third, significantly, his Mark Webber.

:19:15. > :19:20.They have had to change gearbox before a gearbox has run five

:19:20. > :19:29.consecutive events and under Formula One rules, you have an

:19:29. > :19:33.automatic penalty if it doesn't last five. Kimi Raikkonen and Jean-

:19:33. > :19:41.Eric Vergne. Jean-Eric Vergne is ninth in the Toro Rosso. Kimi

:19:41. > :19:49.Raikkonen RNLI test -- Lotus, and he goes fastest, that is a beady

:19:49. > :19:54.lead in terms of time. Kimi Raikkonen, 1: 15.6. Mrs Timo Glock.

:19:54. > :20:00.He comes across the line in the Marussia -- this is Timo Glock. At

:20:00. > :20:06.the moment, he is still in the drop zone. Looking at the information we

:20:06. > :20:12.have here, it is suggesting he is on the prime tyre, which he is

:20:12. > :20:18.indeed, that is a pretty impressive lap. Gary, you are down at the

:20:18. > :20:23.Lotus pits, did you see which tyres he was on? Raikkonen went out on

:20:23. > :20:29.the medium tyre, it was a very good lap. We have just seen Webber going

:20:29. > :20:38.out on this soft tyres. You think we will see Lewis Hamilton champion

:20:38. > :20:43.back in the car? We have seen people going out... He may have to

:20:44. > :20:50.think about it, but at 16.2, he will be fine. There are cars that

:20:50. > :20:57.cannot do that. I think he is fine at 16.2. I think they cut off will

:20:57. > :21:02.be around 16.8. And now we are on board with Sergio Perez. Kobayashi

:21:02. > :21:07.is in sixth place, but Sergio Perez is trying to make his way up that

:21:07. > :21:13.order. It is a very unusual driving style with the steering wheel, well

:21:13. > :21:21.I, won't I? It is like he is going around for 50 pence piece. He has

:21:21. > :21:25.gone second. Unusual but fast. the Saubers are looking competitive.

:21:25. > :21:30.Mark Webber is on track and I gather that Sebastian Vettel is

:21:30. > :21:34.also on the soft tyre. It is surprising to me, the Red Bull

:21:34. > :21:38.which has been so rapid that recent events is definitely having to go

:21:38. > :21:48.for the softer tyre, whereas the McLaren looks safe and secure on

:21:48. > :21:48.

:21:48. > :21:52.Bahadur tyre. -- the harder tyre. bit of traffic won't have helped

:21:52. > :21:57.the cause of Mark Webber, but he is not looking that comfortable. It

:21:57. > :22:03.could be to do with track temperature. With 1.5 minutes to go,

:22:03. > :22:07.he will have to... He runs wide on the exit of turn one. The director

:22:07. > :22:13.thinking we should see Ed out-lap of Michael Schumacher rather than

:22:13. > :22:18.the heart lap of Mark Webber. Mercedes are going well. Rosberg

:22:18. > :22:24.has gone well on the hard tyres as well. The Mercedes does seem to be

:22:24. > :22:29.working well at Hockenheim. Track temperature is 24 degrees, air

:22:29. > :22:37.temperature 17. So unusually cool for the circuit, it has to be said.

:22:37. > :22:41.As we have seen frequently this year, track and tired temperature

:22:55. > :23:00.RADIO: We need this next lap. pressure, then. He is a man who was

:23:00. > :23:04.born to deal with pressure, but this is this -- this is it, one

:23:04. > :23:08.flying lap on the hard tyres. His team-mate Rosberg has delivered a

:23:08. > :23:13.comfortable time to take him through and progress to the next

:23:13. > :23:18.session. Bruno Senna is the one under threat from Michael, but he

:23:18. > :23:25.is on a good lap here. Let's see where it put 7, tenth, he is now

:23:25. > :23:31.safe and that puts Jean-Eric Vergne in danger territory. That is

:23:31. > :23:36.probably more to be expected. Let's see how Michael is getting on.

:23:36. > :23:43.Webber has improved, got up to 12. Sebastian Vettel is up to tenth

:23:43. > :23:51.place. Both of the Ferraris are look insecure. Let's see if Michael

:23:51. > :23:59.Schumacher has done enough? 17th, he has just snuck been there. He

:23:59. > :24:04.has. -- pushed out Jean-Eric Vergne by a marginal fraction. He will not

:24:05. > :24:08.make it through to Q2, the young Frenchman will be an strapping

:24:08. > :24:18.himself and taking himself out of the car and join the rest of those

:24:18. > :24:18.

:24:18. > :24:25.who do not make it through. Jean- Eric Vergne is dead, so are the

:24:25. > :24:31.Caterhams, as are their Marussias - - Jean-Eric Vergne is out. Kimi

:24:31. > :24:35.Raikkonen ends up with the fastest time. Sergio Perez will be a

:24:35. > :24:41.surprise to some people. It was on the softer tyres. Kimi Raikkonen's

:24:41. > :24:45.time was on the hard tyres. Very interesting to see the difference

:24:45. > :24:50.in performance. If it is all to do with the temperatures you are able

:24:50. > :24:55.to generate within the surface of the tyre. So one is called soft,

:24:55. > :24:59.one is called medium, but frankly, we should see the performance of

:25:00. > :25:05.more often come from the option tyre but you cannot always get it

:25:05. > :25:11.switched on. That is an interesting mix, with the first and the third

:25:11. > :25:15.fastest tyre -- times coming from a hard tyres. He only just needed to

:25:15. > :25:21.make it through to Q2, but that was incredibly close. A lot of German

:25:21. > :25:31.fans holding their breath as Michael went for the line. Just to

:25:31. > :25:37.

:25:37. > :25:42.see you are out so soon, but I don't see us -- expect you were

:25:42. > :25:46.expecting any less? No, I didn't think we would get through to Q2.

:25:46. > :25:52.We have struggled all week for some reason with the car, completed the

:25:52. > :25:56.opposite to Silverstone and now, sadly, from the first lap, it has

:25:56. > :26:02.struggled with stability and it is very difficult. I cannot do it 100%

:26:02. > :26:07.every time to get a lap together. A very difficult to understand but we

:26:07. > :26:11.have to get behind it and see what we can do overnight and see what we

:26:11. > :26:15.can achieve in the race tomorrow. What do you think you can achieve?

:26:15. > :26:20.I suppose it is weather dependent. I know you have family and friends

:26:20. > :26:24.here and you want to put on a good show for everyone you have got here.

:26:24. > :26:28.Yes, but we know our possibilities at the moment and my family knows

:26:28. > :26:33.that as well and they don't expect very much. As a team, we know where

:26:33. > :26:38.we are, but if something happens, we have to be there and we have to

:26:38. > :26:43.finish the race. That is the only thing we can do. But in general, I

:26:43. > :26:47.hope it is a good race for us tomorrow. To see the chequered

:26:47. > :26:57.flag? That is the target, definitely. Thank you, let's head

:26:57. > :26:58.

:26:58. > :27:02.getting under way but the weather is changing. Gary, what is it like

:27:03. > :27:09.in the pit lane? It is frantic, everybody is trying to get tyres on

:27:09. > :27:13.the car. Changing to the intermediate tyres. It is too wet

:27:13. > :27:17.for a dry weather tyre. The intermediate will be the call of

:27:17. > :27:21.the day, and they have to get out before the rain gets too heavy.

:27:21. > :27:25.Seven minutes is the gap between the two sessions and suddenly we

:27:25. > :27:30.are run to completely different track conditions. And we are more

:27:30. > :27:35.than 30 seconds into the session and Jenson Button, the first car

:27:35. > :27:40.out, isn't even down at the hairpin. I am amazed there wasn't a queue of

:27:40. > :27:43.cars at the end of the pit lane, because as the rain comes down, the

:27:43. > :27:48.first lap could be your best ever lap and you have no way of knowing

:27:48. > :27:55.if it will ease up towards the end of the session. So the problem that

:27:55. > :28:02.McLaren have had us with this green intermediate tyre and. The marshals

:28:02. > :28:07.are taking cover under the umbrella. A slippery surface flag. It is

:28:07. > :28:12.getting these tyres to work and McLaren and Jenson were working

:28:12. > :28:18.hard on this on Friday to get them to switch on. With the internet

:28:18. > :28:22.tyre, -- intermediate tyre, you have a very thin cover, so to

:28:22. > :28:29.actually get movement in the tyre to generate heat is very difficult.

:28:29. > :28:36.The wet Tyacke has a much wider and deeper groove, -- the wet tyre.

:28:36. > :28:42.That movement within the group is what generates the heat. And now a

:28:42. > :28:46.whole queue of cars or trying to do the same thing. TEAM RADIO: 2 laps,

:28:46. > :28:55.maybe three, but these are the ones that will count, it will only get

:28:55. > :28:58.wetter. One lap out of the three and you will be fine.

:28:58. > :29:02.confirmation of what you were talking about, they have got to

:29:02. > :29:08.find a better of clear air. A lookout slippery it is, Jenson is

:29:08. > :29:13.on what is called the long straight -- and look how the slippery it is.

:29:13. > :29:22.They knew I into a heavy braking area. -- then you worry into a

:29:22. > :29:26.heavy braking area. Jenson Button was struggling for traction well

:29:26. > :29:33.after turn four. It shows how difficult it is in these conditions

:29:33. > :29:38.to switch on the tyres. Early on the brakes into 108. Look how

:29:38. > :29:41.slippery it is. It is like ice, I was watching it yesterday in free

:29:41. > :29:46.practice and the cars looked incredibly slow through that

:29:46. > :29:51.section. Behind him is Maldonado in the Williams, he was another one

:29:51. > :29:58.who was fairly early to get out on circuit. Ricciardo and Hulkenberg

:29:58. > :30:01.were reasonably early. See how deep he goes, trying to skirt the edge.

:30:02. > :30:05.They are trying to keep off the rubber that has been laid down in

:30:05. > :30:11.the first part of the dry session, which becomes slick when you put

:30:11. > :30:15.rain on top of it. You just have to be so gentle. A little bit wider

:30:15. > :30:25.and then he cut back to get the car as straight as possible. It looks

:30:25. > :30:28.

:30:28. > :30:33.like Maldonado might have caught you say, just about gathering it

:30:33. > :30:38.together, Raikkonen and he comes round to try and complete a lap. So

:30:38. > :30:43.Ricciardo has gone third fastest. Let us see what Kimi does, he goes

:30:43. > :30:50.third but he is behind Maldonado and Button. You would think if

:30:50. > :30:57.anyone can handle these tricky conditions it would be Raikkonen.

:30:57. > :31:03.Every car is different. Vettel is quicker than Maldonado was able to

:31:03. > :31:08.do, so let us keep an eye. Webber is down on that. It's a question of

:31:08. > :31:15.how much confidence you have and how brave you are, how much you are

:31:15. > :31:20.prepared to risk. Alonso has gone second. This is an onboard replay.

:31:20. > :31:25.Up ahead, Massa made a big mistake, look at how he got block and Alonso

:31:25. > :31:31.was still second quickest on that lap. So a big blow to Ferrari there,

:31:31. > :31:39.really, Vettel is fastest and Alonso was only 21 thousands of a

:31:39. > :31:45.second slower. Michael goes quickest. Schumacher goes fastest.

:31:45. > :31:51.That was a good lap, 38.0 from Michael Schumacher. It was indeed.

:31:51. > :31:56.Tidy lap run wide. Big amount of oversteer but gathered it up. I

:31:56. > :32:01.said Vettel had gone 1.4 seconds quicker than the previous fastest,

:32:01. > :32:04.it was only 0.4 of a second. That mean nothing as they get into the

:32:04. > :32:08.last ten minutes of this session. It is all about who can make the

:32:08. > :32:16.top ten. Gary, you have been keeping an eye on where the cars

:32:16. > :32:21.are on track, did Michael manage to get a clear lap in there Yes he

:32:21. > :32:25.outlasted the bunch. You saw the rest of them tripping over each oh

:32:25. > :32:28.so it's a clever thing to do, just make sure you get that lap in, with

:32:28. > :32:34.nobody in front of you. So the experience counting perhaps for

:32:34. > :32:40.Michael Schumacher now, look at the drop zone, Grosjean, rick doe,

:32:40. > :32:43.Senna, Perez, Rosberg and Massa, Hamilton has government gone

:32:43. > :32:48.quicker than Michael Schumacher, so he should be safe and Massa

:32:48. > :32:54.improved but he is ento 11th. It is not nouf get into the top ten. We

:32:54. > :33:01.have nine minutes to go and the conditions so much different to how

:33:01. > :33:07.they were earlier. Rosberg unable to improve, down in 17th place. As

:33:07. > :33:12.the rain comes down are any of the guys going to be able to go quicker.

:33:12. > :33:18.Grosjean, Perez and Senna and the other Kobayashi and Rosberg has we

:33:18. > :33:22.have seen, Gary, the times we have seeing, that fastest time, 1.37

:33:22. > :33:26.from Hamilton, it is about the cross over time between the

:33:26. > :33:30.intermediate and the wet. We saw that yesterday. Yes, it is about 20

:33:30. > :33:33.seconds so these conditions at the moment are difficult for

:33:33. > :33:39.intermediates and probably just about able do the same lap time on

:33:39. > :33:44.the wets. Can Rosberg find that bit of time? I I know he will be trying.

:33:44. > :33:50.The weather forecast for tomorrow is good, so he will push the tyres

:33:50. > :33:55.to the limit. Perez, lots of corrective lot being applied. A bit

:33:55. > :34:01.of jigling round, did he, yes he went through the gravel track and

:34:01. > :34:07.back out the other side again. Lucky do that. Well held. It dips

:34:07. > :34:11.into that Sachss curve, the camber of the corner, once you get up high

:34:11. > :34:15.and they have that green painted concrete before the gravel, you

:34:15. > :34:19.don't stand a chance in his conditions. Rosberg, we mentioned

:34:19. > :34:23.earlier he has a five grid penalty for his gearbox change, but

:34:23. > :34:29.nonetheless, he will be wanting to improve on his current 17th place

:34:30. > :34:35.this is him on the warm up lap. He has got Maldonado, just ahead of

:34:35. > :34:41.him. He will be starting to build the speed now. So let us watch him

:34:41. > :34:46.through the last corner and it is the sector times that will tell us

:34:46. > :34:49.the story, gets good traction, a plume of spray coming off the back

:34:49. > :34:55.of the Mercedes. Michael Schumacher is safe in second, at the moment,

:34:55. > :35:00.he is heading for the final part of qualifying, but what can Rosberg do

:35:00. > :35:05.on home territory himself? Never had a great deal of luck in the

:35:05. > :35:09.German Grand Prix, in terms of results, you see how slippery it is

:35:09. > :35:13.out there and the first sector point and he is 1.1 seconds down.

:35:13. > :35:17.Not on the fastest but on tenth position, so it is going to be very

:35:17. > :35:22.very difficult for him to break into that top ten. It is indeed.

:35:22. > :35:27.You would have thought that the full wet, not only be able to move

:35:27. > :35:33.the water a bit, it gives you more confidence to lean on the rear of

:35:33. > :35:38.the car, the intermediates tend to be more snapy like stepping on ie,

:35:38. > :35:41.it gets away with you, but the wet is more progressive. There is more

:35:41. > :35:45.rubber there, you feel that as you drive the car. Interesting that

:35:45. > :35:49.Michael has gone back on wets having done a good lap on the

:35:49. > :35:53.intermediate, is he gathering information or what? Yes we were

:35:53. > :35:56.hear tong team radio he was going out in the full wet for protection,

:35:56. > :36:00.to make sure that suddenly things don't change but as the rain

:36:00. > :36:09.continues to fall, it is not looking like anyone is going to go

:36:09. > :36:13.much faster. So, round goes Rosberg. Michael Schumacher ekeeping out of

:36:13. > :36:18.the way. Perhapss he's is preparing for Q3. It looks as though the

:36:18. > :36:22.extreme wet is going to be the one to be used, so he gets some useful

:36:22. > :36:32.experience but Rosberg's time. It won't be enough, to drag him

:36:32. > :36:36.

:36:36. > :36:40.through. It is too risky. Rosberg has discovered it is just

:36:40. > :36:45.that wet, four seconds down on what he needed to achieve to get into

:36:45. > :36:48.the top ten. No chance of any of these guys to possibly improve

:36:48. > :36:52.their time. All they are doing at this stage is getting experience of

:36:52. > :36:56.the track on the full wet tyres. Those that have made it into the

:36:56. > :37:00.top ten they can practise for the final part of qualifying. If you

:37:00. > :37:04.are practising you don't want to throw the car off the road.

:37:04. > :37:08.lines, they tend to have them painted with a grip paint f there

:37:08. > :37:14.is such a thing, it has sand in to try to reduce the amount of grip

:37:14. > :37:21.you lose when you ride out on to it. Look at how slippy it is, losing

:37:21. > :37:25.the rear axle, it runs wide. That is the staging ground for the drag

:37:25. > :37:30.stip they have here, other forms of motor sport enjoyed in Hockenheim.

:37:30. > :37:37.Look that the time, seven seconds down on what we have seen, in fact

:37:38. > :37:42.running wide, it is just so sliepry out there, so we are looking at big

:37:42. > :37:48.names going out Felipe Massa, Grosjean, Senna will be out again

:37:48. > :37:54.you are look at Senna a replay of Bruno Senna, still hasn't been able

:37:54. > :38:00.to get into a Q3 throughout the 2012 season whereas his team-mate

:38:00. > :38:05.has managed to do it. He is in sixth. Raikkonen, this was some of

:38:05. > :38:09.his fun and games. He has made it into the top ten, but Grosjean who

:38:09. > :38:13.does have a five place gearbox penalty and you are looking at a

:38:14. > :38:18.replay of Grosjean, he has not made it throughout. He was 15th. That

:38:18. > :38:22.was on the full wets, that was later on trying to find some grip.

:38:22. > :38:29.He was adjusting something, probably his brake balance and

:38:29. > :38:34.didn't react quickly enough and slid wide. We saw that with muem

:38:34. > :38:39.yesterday, dropped the car on the exit of 12. This narrow part of the

:38:39. > :38:44.old circuit here, there is no loom for error. Look at, we are watching

:38:44. > :38:48.Massa, look at rick doe, it doesn't look as if he is going to make it

:38:48. > :38:53.through to the final part of qualifying but he will start 11th,

:38:53. > :38:58.he will probably start better because Webber has a grid penalty.

:38:58. > :39:05.That is a good effort. He will end one a decent grid position. Rosberg

:39:05. > :39:11.will get his place penalty. That will make a long face for Nico

:39:11. > :39:19.tomorrow, starting his home Grand Prix, from second last row. Just a

:39:19. > :39:24.reminder, those that don't make it through to final qualitying line up

:39:24. > :39:30.in order they drop out. It's a poor day for Felipe Massa once again,

:39:30. > :39:37.the two Brazilians, Senna and Felipe Massa, both struggling today.

:39:37. > :39:41.Yes Massa hasn't looked comfortable this weekend. In the end, he's not

:39:41. > :39:45.going to make it through the next part of qualifying. All you ever do

:39:45. > :39:49.is compare to the team-mate. Fernando Alonso sitting in fourth.

:39:49. > :39:55.So the chequered flag is out on the second part of qualifying and we

:39:55. > :40:02.now have the seven that are not going to be in the top ten, they

:40:02. > :40:12.are Ricciardo, Perez, his team-mate Kobayashi, nor is Massa, Grosjean,

:40:12. > :40:17.

:40:17. > :40:23.Senna, and Rosberg.. O understand we are on to Charlie, speaking to

:40:23. > :40:27.Charlie about him. An unhappy Raikkonen, talking about Perez, the

:40:27. > :40:31.car's pushed back in and it is game over for Rosberg, he is one of

:40:31. > :40:37.those that has not made it through. 17th. That is where he will be on

:40:37. > :40:39.the grid, maybe a couple for pentys for others but it is a

:40:39. > :40:43.disappointing day. His team-mate Michael Schumacher has made it

:40:43. > :40:48.through. Grosjean is out as well so we have had real surprises in that

:40:48. > :40:53.part of qualifying. I wonder if there aren't a few more stories

:40:53. > :40:58.ability drivers being blocked. Grosjean marching up the pit lane,

:40:58. > :41:08.almost as if he is going to have a word with somebody. Massa back into

:41:08. > :41:08.

:41:08. > :41:14.the pits. Let us confirm those out. Daniel, you have proved this season

:41:14. > :41:18.you are handy in the rain. Yeah, it's, it's funny, because I didn't

:41:18. > :41:23.do much wet weather driving back in the day, but it is nice, nice to

:41:23. > :41:28.have a bit of speed in the wet, so it is a shame we missed out on Q3.

:41:28. > :41:32.When it is that close you hope for a bit more, but 11th is good. We

:41:32. > :41:42.improved where we with, it is a good starting position for tomorrow.

:41:42. > :41:42.

:41:42. > :41:47.We haven't been there far out. Webber, he has a five place grid

:41:47. > :41:53.penalty. I could get my nose in. Tenth is on the dirty side. 11 is

:41:53. > :41:58.on the clean, so it is probably much of a muchness, and with my

:41:58. > :42:03.stats a bit inconsistent it is probably not the biggest variable I

:42:03. > :42:08.am confident I will have a good one tomorrow. Let us rejoin the top ten

:42:08. > :42:12.shoot out. The top ten shoot out begins, cars making their way to

:42:12. > :42:20.the end of the pit lane, the two McLarens are first out on track, it

:42:20. > :42:24.is a very wet circuit thrai. On the extreme wets and Button, Hamilton

:42:24. > :42:29.and Maldonado are taking to the track to see if they can establish

:42:29. > :42:36.a benchmark time. Gary, conditions for you in the pit lane, somehow

:42:36. > :42:41.that rain? The rain has stopped here in the pit lane so the track

:42:41. > :42:44.is going to be getting better, so it is going to backbench an

:42:44. > :42:50.intermediate weather in two or three laps of the session. You have

:42:50. > :42:55.to make sure you have the intermediates. I don't know I would

:42:55. > :42:58.be rushing out there with wets on. Let's make the most of this track

:42:58. > :43:02.position and the visibility. McLaren tried to get out there and

:43:02. > :43:06.get clear running, as you say, if it gets drier they will have to

:43:06. > :43:12.play the game here, in terms of when they choose to come in, if it

:43:12. > :43:17.is fast enough to put the intermediates on I think the reason

:43:17. > :43:23.they have gone out there earlier, is that Hulkenberg? That is a long

:43:23. > :43:29.way, is that on to the back straight. I don't recall anywhere

:43:29. > :43:35.elsewhere there is so much grass. Indeed. What's happened here then?

:43:35. > :43:40.Oh. That is a very scary moment, and scary place. To lose control,

:43:40. > :43:45.with aqua plaining and that is a clear message to Charlie Whiting,

:43:45. > :43:50.that, yes, OK, maybe not be raining but that is the ebg effect of

:43:50. > :43:53.standing water, that could have been a very nasty incident, one of

:43:53. > :43:57.the fastest parts of the track. He has rejoined and the session is

:43:57. > :44:01.still going. Jenson Button is opening up his lap. You sound

:44:01. > :44:06.remarkably calm about that. If that car had gone left, that could have

:44:06. > :44:10.been a big accident.. That would have continued for a long way,

:44:10. > :44:20.think what it does it shows, there is no rain falling at this time,

:44:20. > :44:22.

:44:22. > :44:32.but the amount of volume of water thing here to surmise and stay on

:44:32. > :44:33.

:44:33. > :44:36.track. Again, the rain master and he is saying there is a lot of aqua

:44:36. > :44:41.planing, there already head scratching going on with Charlie

:44:41. > :44:45.and his team up in race control. Jenson Button first out on to the

:44:45. > :44:51.track, he is followed by Lewis Hamilton on the extreme wets, and

:44:51. > :44:56.as the spray gets kicked up. You were saying different parts of the

:44:56. > :45:00.circuit dry out at different rates. Because of the mix of old and new

:45:00. > :45:05.circuit. This is the new part of the track at turn eight, nine, see

:45:05. > :45:09.the aqua planing there as we runs over, you can see the change in

:45:09. > :45:13.surface. Just struggling, struggling to put the power down as

:45:14. > :45:17.the tyre fills up with water -- water. It can't dissipate the

:45:17. > :45:22.amount of standing water that is there. That is an uncomfortable

:45:22. > :45:27.feeling for a driver. We come into the old part, different track

:45:27. > :45:31.surface, a bit more abrasive. Because of the camber changes you

:45:31. > :45:35.get less standing water, apart from down into this section as we come

:45:35. > :45:38.through 16 and as I mentioned earlier this is a staging point for

:45:38. > :45:48.where they have the drag strip. So a lot of rubber laid down if you

:45:48. > :45:57.

:45:57. > :46:06.the Jenson Button. -- let's see. Lewis Hamilton is faster. 1: 46.6.

:46:06. > :46:10.Presumably, the track is going to get slower, 1: 49.5. Michael

:46:10. > :46:15.Schumacher has gone fastest. Fernando Alonso immediately

:46:15. > :46:18.improves that. So as the track begins to dry off, this is going to

:46:18. > :46:24.be one of those sessions way you want to be the last one across the

:46:24. > :46:31.line just before the chequered flag. Vettel has gone fastest but we will

:46:31. > :46:36.see plenty of improvement, I think. This is a replay of Alonso,

:46:36. > :46:41.breaking off line down into the hairpin and then as he came back

:46:41. > :46:46.across the rebel line, he lost the rear of the car. Kimi Raikkonen

:46:46. > :46:49.having something similar as he comes out of turn one. Lewis

:46:49. > :46:53.Hamilton running wide as well and you do have to watch that. If they

:46:53. > :46:59.think you have gained an advantage, even if it is wet, they may

:46:59. > :47:07.disallow at the time. Look at the understeer, fighting it into

:47:07. > :47:15.oversteer. This is going through turn a seven. They aquaplaning

:47:15. > :47:22.through the apex of seven rejoined. Manjit can see the difference

:47:22. > :47:31.between the new circuit and how it holds the standing water and the

:47:31. > :47:36.old part of the track. He is going quicker on their slap. Lead to see

:47:36. > :47:41.what this is for Jenson Button. -- let's see what this is the Jenson

:47:41. > :47:44.Button. He has gone quicker than the last time around. The Red Bull

:47:44. > :47:48.people have been told they are expecting the last one to be the

:47:48. > :47:57.quick one. Mark Webber trying to get himself track position by

:47:57. > :48:02.hanging back. He has got a bit to clear space ahead of him. Mark

:48:02. > :48:08.Webber now going on to the lap. He usually leads the wet conditions,

:48:08. > :48:13.he is always faster in the rain. Fernando Alonso has come into the

:48:13. > :48:19.pits, only four minutes to go. has come back for a brand new set

:48:19. > :48:23.of extreme wets. Kimi Raikkonen has done the same thing. Inevitably,

:48:23. > :48:28.you start to lose the sharpness of the block and the ability to cut

:48:28. > :48:34.through the water and get into the tarmac. Lewis Hamilton showed a

:48:34. > :48:37.huge amount of wheelspin are coming out of the tape -- hairpin. Gary,

:48:38. > :48:42.coming in for another set of wet tyres, they are pre- heated and

:48:42. > :48:47.maybe you can get an advantage that way? Yes, it is good to get back

:48:47. > :48:52.out there with heat in the tyres, they lose quite a lot of

:48:52. > :48:58.temperature and as David says, get that sharp corner on the clock

:48:58. > :49:05.while it is getting drier, it will be that bit quicker. I think it is

:49:05. > :49:11.going to be Last Man Standing up there today. It is, we will have to

:49:11. > :49:18.watch that till the very end. Lewis Hamilton. It is tricky to get the

:49:18. > :49:26.power down. Balancing the steering against the throttle. Just managing

:49:26. > :49:30.to eke it out on to the straight. He goes fastest. 1: 44.1. I am not

:49:30. > :49:36.sure it will last for long. We consider purple sectors for

:49:36. > :49:44.Sebastian Vettel, he is improving. -- we can see. Michael Schumacher

:49:44. > :49:48.has also improved. As we can see in the back of the shot... Let's see

:49:48. > :49:57.what the Red Bulls are doing. They are together as they come over the

:49:57. > :50:03.line. Vettel goes fastest, 1: 42.3. Mark Webber is only a fastest, but

:50:03. > :50:08.a great lad from Sebastian Vettel. -- Mark Webber is only eight

:50:08. > :50:12.fastest but a great lap from Sebastian Vettel. Sebastian wets

:50:12. > :50:19.very close to the back of Mark Webber when they came to finish

:50:19. > :50:24.that lap -- was very close. Held up potentially by Mark Webber, a but

:50:24. > :50:31.he found the clear space that he needed to allow Vettel to go faster.

:50:31. > :50:36.You can see what he thinks a bed, a wave of that hand. Vettel not happy

:50:36. > :50:41.with his team-mate. Meanwhile, Schumacher on a better lap. TEAM

:50:41. > :50:45.RADIO: This is a much hotter set of tyres, we can do better. Look how

:50:45. > :50:50.much the car is twitching around, trying to avoid the puddles.

:50:50. > :50:55.Michael Schumacher trying to make the most of this new set of tyres

:50:55. > :50:59.but he is them by four-tenths of a second to Sebastian Vettel's

:50:59. > :51:02.fastest time. This is where Sebastian Vettel was held up

:51:02. > :51:11.slightly by Mark Webber, so it is feasible that he can bet that his

:51:11. > :51:19.time. It looks as though he has backed out of it. He sees the

:51:19. > :51:26.traffic ahead of him. Our circuit map be showing it as Jenson Button

:51:26. > :51:35.in front of him. Fernando Alonso set the fastest first sector of

:51:35. > :51:41.anyone. And the second set up. So Fernando Alonso is looking like he

:51:41. > :51:46.is going for pole position. Mark Webber is going really fast.

:51:46. > :51:50.Fernando Alonso, we talked about rain masters. Schumacher was rain

:51:50. > :51:56.master in his first career, but this guy has been astonishing. He

:51:56. > :52:01.got pole position in Silverstone in bad conditions. Can he do it in

:52:01. > :52:08.Hockenheim? The championship leader trying to beat the Red Bulls. He

:52:08. > :52:14.has done a 1: 40.904. That means he is fast is that the moment. The

:52:14. > :52:20.chequered flag is out, but there are still cars out on a lap.

:52:21. > :52:27.Sebastian Vettel has set the fastest first sector. He looks like

:52:27. > :52:30.he is struggling, you could see the aquaplaning in to turn ten.

:52:31. > :52:36.Although it is a better middle sector for Jenson Button, his first

:52:36. > :52:41.sector was slightly down, so it would be enough for pole. Alonso

:52:41. > :52:46.has done a good first sector, only one-tenth slower than Vettel. It is

:52:46. > :52:51.all about gaining a bit of traction. Jenson Button through the final

:52:51. > :52:57.part, virtually, of the lap. Just a bit double right-hander to go. His

:52:57. > :53:02.middle sector was an improvement, but he is down in eighth place. His

:53:02. > :53:08.team mate is currently in six. Does this move Jenson Button up the

:53:08. > :53:16.order? He is there in six. Hamilton is in the pits. Schumacher is in

:53:16. > :53:21.fourth. Vettel is on a good lap here. Across the line, he is second.

:53:21. > :53:26.Mark Webber is third. Of Fernando Alonso is still fastest and still

:53:26. > :53:30.on a reasonable lap. Trying to get a bit more speed out of it in the

:53:30. > :53:37.closing stages of the session. Maldonado has put in about a map

:53:37. > :53:44.and gone ahead of them the Clarets into sixth. Jenson Button in

:53:44. > :53:51.seventh, had not under any aid. Fernando Alonso even faster, just

:53:51. > :53:58.not up Annan's -- Hamilton in aid. Fernando Alonso even faster, just

:53:58. > :54:08.to make sure. Mark Webber will start them in a position, he has a

:54:08. > :54:14.

:54:14. > :54:18.fireplace penalty -- in eight for 22nd career pole. Sebastian Vettel

:54:18. > :54:23.second, Mark Webber will be pushed back down the grid because of a

:54:23. > :54:27.gearbox penalty. Michael Schumacher has a qualified his team made for

:54:27. > :54:35.the first time this year. -- out- qualified. Kimi Raikkonen not able

:54:35. > :54:41.to do much in the final session at and in tenth place. Romain Grosjean

:54:41. > :54:51.has a fireplace agreed penalty. As does Nico Rosberg. -- 5 place grid

:54:51. > :54:57.

:54:57. > :55:01.another eventful qualifying where the weather has dictated what

:55:01. > :55:07.happened out there and just like Silverstone, Fernando Alonso it

:55:07. > :55:09.brilliantly. He is a remarkable driver. What started as a very

:55:10. > :55:14.difficult car in pre-season has developed well and he has taken

:55:14. > :55:18.full advantage of the ever-changing conditions at Hockenheim. We can

:55:18. > :55:21.see him running wide, this is actually his fastest lap that we

:55:21. > :55:26.are looking at the at the moment and we can see he is using the

:55:26. > :55:31.track and so much more. The white lines are not -- normally there to

:55:31. > :55:35.define the racetrack and you can't go behind them, but there is no

:55:36. > :55:39.clear advantage here by going the long way around. We also have

:55:39. > :55:45.footage of him running wide going through 15 and 16, he runs out on

:55:45. > :55:49.what is actually a drag strip when Hockenheim is used for other events.

:55:49. > :55:52.Again, it is more of the case of whether Carl Whant in those

:55:52. > :55:57.conditions. He must be so happy with the way things are going. This

:55:57. > :56:02.year, he was talking about how the car had disappointed him and it

:56:02. > :56:06.looks like it might not be Ferrari's year. They have now had

:56:06. > :56:10.to a pole positions and are leading the Drivers' Championship. -- two

:56:10. > :56:14.pole positions. This is a sport of development, it is not just about

:56:14. > :56:18.what you have at the start of the season. We have seen guys have a

:56:18. > :56:26.couple of victories and look like they are set up bandit has petered

:56:26. > :56:31.out. What Ferrari have definitely one is the development award. --

:56:31. > :56:34.one. In Melbourne, they were second from pole position and now have

:56:34. > :56:41.they are off the back of double pole positions. What does it say

:56:41. > :56:46.about Felipe Massa, he went out in Q2? It is troubled times for him.

:56:46. > :56:51.Let's hear from Fernando Alonso. A Ben Ando, your first pole

:56:51. > :56:59.position at Hockenheim and their brilliant lap at the end. -- Ben

:56:59. > :57:02.Ando. Every time you go out in these conditions, it is a new

:57:02. > :57:10.feeling, a new level but you have to analyse quickly because there is

:57:10. > :57:14.not meant time -- much time. At the end, we maximised the car and in

:57:14. > :57:18.wet conditions, it seems quite competitive, so we took their

:57:18. > :57:24.momentum and tomorrow we will see what happens. We are expecting a

:57:24. > :57:29.dry race, what is the performance like in the dry? I think the car is

:57:29. > :57:39.running well also on dry, but we need to see. The car was a bit

:57:39. > :57:45.

:57:45. > :57:51.quicker than everybody on dry, so I joins us now. We are going to have

:57:51. > :57:57.to shout very loudly. Just tell us about your qualifying, it is a

:57:57. > :58:01.shame you take that penalty. Yes, it is not often in Formula One that

:58:01. > :58:05.we use all three types of tyres in a one-hour session but that was the

:58:05. > :58:11.case today. And a very competitive session, you have to make sure you

:58:11. > :58:15.are there at the end, which we were. The back part of Q3 was where the

:58:15. > :58:21.time was done, but the tyres were not in the best shape at that point,

:58:21. > :58:25.so ultimately, Fernando Alonso did a brilliant strategy, but it wasn't

:58:25. > :58:32.completely clear, it wasn't completely obvious, and the start

:58:32. > :58:36.of Q3 was tricky. David can identify with that, the aquaplaning

:58:36. > :58:40.and the difficult conditions. I would love to be starting third, at

:58:40. > :58:46.the penalty is a real pain in the... We will try and pick people of

:58:46. > :58:52.tomorrow. There was a time when you enter a team made seemed to be

:58:52. > :59:00.pretty close, Sebastian Sark waving his hand that year. I saw him very

:59:00. > :59:07.late. -- Sebastien aid starts waving his hand achieve. Obviously,

:59:07. > :59:11.the spray is very heavy. You are losing visibility. That is what can

:59:11. > :59:18.happen unfortunately if you have two cars on the same team out at

:59:18. > :59:21.the same time. Not bad qualifying overall, these conditions meant all

:59:21. > :59:25.of the tyres were used, but the intermediate and the full wet don't

:59:25. > :59:29.look like they were coping with the conditions around this track very

:59:29. > :59:33.well. It looked very slippy compared to other tracks. You are

:59:33. > :59:39.right. Again, I think what is paying is a big role is the

:59:39. > :59:43.temperature. That playing a big role. -- playing a bigger role.

:59:43. > :59:47.There are a lot of teams and drivers that are not confident in

:59:47. > :59:51.certain conditions engine literally changed the type of tyre, from

:59:51. > :59:56.extreme to intermediate and all of a sudden, the car feels more

:59:56. > :00:00.comfortable, or maybe vice versa. They are very tricky, even compared

:00:00. > :00:04.to the dry, so don't underestimate how tricky it is for teams and

:00:04. > :00:08.drivers to get on top of the wet and the intermediate. Their keeper

:00:08. > :00:14.Jim -- joining us. Let's hear from Sebastian Vettel.

:00:14. > :00:18.At very eventful qualifying session, give us your thoughts. I think it

:00:18. > :00:21.was pretty difficult for all of us, especially the last bit of

:00:21. > :00:25.qualifying with a lot of water on the track and aquaplaning, so it

:00:25. > :00:30.was easy to get it wrong. Fortunately, we got it right, just

:00:30. > :00:36.a little bit missing at the end. I went to a wide intern six on the

:00:36. > :00:39.last lap and locked the rear and lost the car -- in turn at six. It

:00:39. > :00:44.would have been close, it is hard to say whether it would have been

:00:44. > :00:54.good enough, but we were quite good in those conditions and happy to be

:00:54. > :00:57.

:00:57. > :01:02.has outqualified Hamilton for the first time this season, let us hear

:01:02. > :01:09.from him now. What does it tils about the updates you brought here?

:01:09. > :01:13.I don't think it tells us anything, when you rook at our times in dry-

:01:14. > :01:17.runing, apart from me being last, the pace is very good. In the wet

:01:17. > :01:21.conditions we struggled to get the tyres working. I think with the

:01:21. > :01:25.package, think the guys done a good job, we should be happy with the

:01:26. > :01:31.improvements we have made there, I think for degradation and outright

:01:31. > :01:34.pace we have strong, as soon as it started raining we knew we could

:01:34. > :01:39.struggle. It is impressive we are this far up the grid. Let us look

:01:39. > :01:44.at the positives. You got the maximum out of the car, are you

:01:44. > :01:49.happier with your performance? I was happy at Silverstone, we got

:01:49. > :01:54.superunlucky in qualifying, and yes, we got to sort these issues out

:01:54. > :01:57.with the temperature, because it is hurting us both here and, yeah, as

:01:57. > :02:02.soon as it rains we know it is going to be a difficult day in the

:02:02. > :02:05.office. The positives to take from it is the car is quicker in the dry,

:02:05. > :02:09.and tomorrow is supposed to be dry, I think we are in for a very good

:02:09. > :02:14.race. Good luck. The car certainly did look better in the dry, it was

:02:14. > :02:17.looking like Q1 was going their way, yesterday they were very fast, but

:02:17. > :02:22.stkpwhrust the rain Jensen mentioned it doesn't work. It is

:02:22. > :02:25.about getting the tyre switched on. Fernando Alonso's interview, he

:02:25. > :02:30.said if it is dry McLaren will be a fost. They will try and understand

:02:30. > :02:36.that in the way we have seen it all year, teams trying to get them

:02:36. > :02:39.working. You might have seen over Jensen Button's shoulder, Hamilton

:02:39. > :02:43.was lurking behind. He didn't fancy waiting to speak to us, so

:02:43. > :02:46.hopefully we will hear from him tomorrow. Tomorrow, it is his 1

:02:46. > :02:52.hundredth Grand Prix, he would have been hoping for more, and therefore

:02:52. > :02:56.more tomorrow. It is remarkable to think he has had 100 Grand Prixs at

:02:56. > :02:59.McLaren have passed so quickly. He would have expected to have more

:02:59. > :03:03.world titles than the single title he has. I don't think that is

:03:03. > :03:07.through any failing of his performance, McLaren have been

:03:07. > :03:12.struggling to keep with the development. It's a crucial time as

:03:12. > :03:17.we reach mid-season, not only for this World Champion but his future.

:03:17. > :03:21.They have brought so many upgrade, are they work or was the weather

:03:21. > :03:25.maybe thwarting that chance? They will have a lot of analysis tool,

:03:25. > :03:30.they will analyse what was working even in the changing conditions and

:03:30. > :03:34.whether it correlates with the wind tunnel, and from that, you have to

:03:34. > :03:42.put your best foot forward and see what the race weekend brings you P

:03:43. > :03:46.-- you. Hulkenberg joins us now. It said in our graphic fifth which is

:03:46. > :03:49.where you qualified, the best of the season. You jump forward a

:03:49. > :03:53.place because Mark Webber has his grid penalty. You must be pleased?

:03:53. > :03:57.Yes, I am. Especially under these condition, it has been tricky,

:03:57. > :04:03.difficult to drive and keep the car on the track. Probably even has

:04:03. > :04:07.seen my moment in Q3 when I went, luckily I was able to continue and

:04:07. > :04:12.do my job. We have had a couple of wet Saturdays, you seem to do well

:04:12. > :04:15.in these conditions, even in Brazil when you got that fantastic pole

:04:15. > :04:20.position, it was a drying track there. Yes, that was much drier,

:04:20. > :04:24.that was full wet, but, yeah, I have to admit like to drive in the

:04:24. > :04:30.wet, it is a different channel, you need to be a bit more careful, a

:04:30. > :04:34.bit more feeling, specially with the gins with so much power. You

:04:34. > :04:38.need a lot of sensitivity on the throttle pedal. Let us take a look

:04:39. > :04:43.at the spin. That must have been a scary moment. It was. My heart went

:04:43. > :04:49.straight down to the bottom area, there is so much water here, you

:04:49. > :04:54.see I drive straight, aqua planing, there is nothing I could do. I

:04:54. > :04:58.thought "Please don't touch the wall." Can you explain what is it

:04:58. > :05:01.like to the people at home. There are certain conditions where the

:05:01. > :05:04.cars cannot drive. People might think you the best drives in the

:05:04. > :05:09.world what is the sensation for you? The problem is the gauge of

:05:09. > :05:12.the tyres is not big enough. With that little amount of standing waer,

:05:12. > :05:18.a normal car, no problem, for us it is a big problem, you are driving

:05:18. > :05:22.in a straight line and you ra passengers I was travelling at

:05:22. > :05:26.260kph and the car did something else that I wanted. There is not

:05:26. > :05:31.much else I can do. How do you think it will go tomorrow, do you

:05:31. > :05:34.think you have a good race car? don't think we should be all right.

:05:34. > :05:39.We won't be as competitive in the dry as in the wet. We are starting

:05:39. > :05:44.fourth. I will try hard, stretch myself, a lot, or very much, to try

:05:44. > :05:51.and defend this position. OK, thank you for joining us, let us look at

:05:51. > :05:54.where they line up P -- up. Fernando Alonso set the pace in

:05:54. > :06:00.qualifying. Shuem behind and Hulkenberg, his best in a Force

:06:00. > :06:08.India. Maldonado sixth and Jensen Button and Hamilton followed by di

:06:08. > :06:14.Resta and Raikkonen. Massa is down in 14th with Grosjean, Senna,

:06:14. > :06:20.Rosberg and Vergne next. Caim and Petra Kvitova are 19th and 20th

:06:20. > :06:24.followed by Pic, Glock, de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan. Everybody

:06:24. > :06:28.is talking about strategy and how it is going to play out. Somebody

:06:28. > :06:36.who loves talking about strategy is Gary Anderson. Qualifying is about

:06:36. > :06:38.the right tyres at the right time. Q1 was run on the dry. Q3 wet tyre.

:06:38. > :06:43.The interesting thing was Fernando Alonso did, he came in half way

:06:43. > :06:46.through, put on a new set with sharp corners so when the track got

:06:47. > :06:50.to its best he had the best tyres on there for moving the water, pole

:06:50. > :06:54.position. Job done for today but tomorrow is about the dry weather

:06:54. > :06:57.tyre. Now, my strategy analysis shows a two stop strategy is the

:06:57. > :07:02.best at the moment but the track has been raw, the track will get

:07:02. > :07:05.better, a one-stop is only six seconds slower, tomorrow we will

:07:05. > :07:09.see a lot of one-stop strategy, people pushing the tyres to the

:07:09. > :07:16.limit. Thank you Gary. There is plenty of sport coming up on the

:07:16. > :07:19.BBC, in fact as soon as we are off air the Third Round of the open

:07:19. > :07:25.continues. And coverage of the final round starts at 11 clock

:07:25. > :07:29.tomorrow, again on BBC Two, and BBC HD. Let us not forget about us, we

:07:29. > :07:34.are back with highlights of the German Grand Prix, 5.30 on BBC Two

:07:34. > :07:37.and the BBC HD channel. It is shaping up on the an exciting Grand

:07:38. > :07:41.Prix. Fernando Alonso might be at the frond but we have two Germans

:07:41. > :07:45.desperate to get on to the podium. Vettel never won his home race

:07:45. > :07:48.before, Michael Schumacher, he had a strong day. Both very happy to be

:07:48. > :07:52.that close to the front. Vettel maybe feels he could have had a run

:07:52. > :07:55.for pole, in the end he will start second. Michael Schumacher won't be

:07:55. > :07:58.too unhappy with that, he is a man who has won round here before.

:07:58. > :08:03.said at the top of the programme he would love to be on that middle

:08:03. > :08:06.step, do you think he can do it? won here four times before, so he

:08:06. > :08:09.knows this track. He has been looking a lot more likely to

:08:09. > :08:12.achieve that sort of success this year than the previous couple of

:08:12. > :08:16.seasons and with the weather changing as we have seen, who knows

:08:16. > :08:19.what will happen tomorrow. Who does know, it has been an exciting

:08:19. > :08:23.season, thank you very much for your company. We have got five

:08:23. > :08:26.Germans on the grid, tens of thousands of them in the
