:01:04. > :01:09.The attention to detail. The precision. The cost. The constant

:01:09. > :01:19.quest for engineering excellence. Had South Korea seen anything like

:01:19. > :01:20.

:01:20. > :01:28.this before Formula One turned up? Oh yes and on a much bigger scale

:01:28. > :01:33.than Formula One. Less than a mile from the Yeongam

:01:33. > :01:37.Track is this place, three million square meters of supertanker heaven.

:01:37. > :01:47.Now for about 70 million you could either run a team in Formula One

:01:47. > :01:50.

:01:50. > :02:00.for just one year or get your hands on this.

:02:00. > :02:03.

:02:03. > :02:06.150,000 tonnes of container ship. And hilst they don't match up in

:02:07. > :02:16.terms of real speed, they are defined by ground breaking

:02:17. > :02:29.

:02:29. > :02:34.engineering and attention to the smallest detail.

:02:34. > :02:44.And when you have spent months building this, or designing a car,

:02:44. > :02:51.one thing can make or break your year - the launch.

:02:51. > :02:57.Lights out and away we go. Sebastian Vettel lights it up. And

:02:57. > :03:07.somebody is up already. Is that Alonso? And Webber.

:03:07. > :03:09.

:03:09. > :03:13.Man, Romain Grosjean what are you Two very different places with so

:03:13. > :03:19.much in common and this is worth looking at. This is how close they

:03:19. > :03:24.are. A mile over the hill from that shipyard this impressive place, the

:03:24. > :03:29.Yeongam Circuit as we arrive for our third Korean gran pre. Eddie

:03:29. > :03:35.Jordan is with me. The cars cars will be travelling faster than that

:03:35. > :03:40.in a few moments, but South Korea, what do you make of it? It is

:03:41. > :03:45.growing in terms of the awareness. When we first came here, the people

:03:45. > :03:49.of South Korea hadn't a clue what was going on. This is their sport.

:03:49. > :03:54.Technology and Formula One is at the pinnacle of what they do here

:03:54. > :04:03.in the shipyard is brilliant. I mean it is an amazing place to come

:04:03. > :04:08.That shipyard was remarkable, but we seem seem to have entertainment,

:04:08. > :04:12.in 2010 Mark Webber crashed. Last year Sebastian Vettel won and Red

:04:12. > :04:15.Bull clinched the constructors crown and if we look at the

:04:15. > :04:19.standings, for the first time there is a real battle with Fernando

:04:19. > :04:23.Alonso. That happened since Singapore. He put himself back at

:04:23. > :04:28.the top of the frame alongside Alonso. It is the first time there

:04:28. > :04:34.has been back-to-back winners this season. Vettel, he is on the money

:04:34. > :04:39.at the moment and he is always quick no matter what happens. He

:04:39. > :04:42.won here last year. Red Bull are looking strong and

:04:42. > :04:47.McLaren trying to push them and the pace suggests that Sebastian Vettel

:04:47. > :04:50.is the man for pole and the man for the win. But there is a real air of

:04:50. > :04:53.electricity here because we are getting close to the race that will

:04:53. > :04:57.decide the championship. championship is all important for

:04:57. > :05:01.two reasons, not just the drivers, but let's consider the constructors.

:05:01. > :05:03.When you talk about the drivers, you have five races to go, it is

:05:03. > :05:09.like the championship, the light has been turned on. Everything will

:05:09. > :05:13.be fast and furious from here on in. I say to everyone at home, make

:05:13. > :05:19.sure you watch these races. Make sure you watch the qualifying.

:05:19. > :05:23.This one is for those of you who weren't out at bed at 5am to see

:05:23. > :05:33.this first time around! Gary Anderson is in the pit lane

:05:33. > :05:42.

:05:42. > :05:45.and in the commentary box David The Korean International Circuit in

:05:45. > :05:49.the south-west. Country provides the stage for the next act in the

:05:49. > :05:54.drama of the 2012 season. It is the only venue where Red Bull were

:05:54. > :06:04.beaten to pole throughout the whole of last year by Lewis Hamilton and

:06:04. > :06:11.McLaren. Qualifying takes place close to the city. This highly

:06:11. > :06:14.developed country which grew its economy through from the 60s to the

:06:14. > :06:21.90s managed to avoid recession and it is a Formula One facility that's

:06:21. > :06:26.on a grand scale with long straights, fast sweepers and tight

:06:26. > :06:30.twisty sections there is the end of the lap. There is a longer DRS, 80

:06:30. > :06:34.meters longer for race day, but as ever in qualifying, the DRS in

:06:34. > :06:38.enabled throughout the laps so they will use it on all the different

:06:38. > :06:48.straights and for David, it strikes me this place with its three distin

:06:48. > :06:52.

:06:53. > :07:02.sectors, it has a different rhythm? In free practise yesterday we had

:07:03. > :07:09.

:07:09. > :07:13.Michael Schumacher being held up by an HRT and and and and gis

:07:13. > :07:17.particular lating. Chatting to Gary Anderson. It is three sectors as

:07:17. > :07:22.you mentioned. The first part is about straight line speeds. That is

:07:22. > :07:26.a Monza section. The second sector is more about sweeping fast corners.

:07:26. > :07:33.It is about downforce performance and you enter the last section

:07:33. > :07:43.which is a Monty Carlo-style, Mickey Mouse section.

:07:43. > :07:47.We have seen the super soft used at different tracks. We saw it in

:07:47. > :07:54.Singapore and Canada. It is interesting that you have got high-

:07:54. > :07:58.speed corners on the mid-part of the lap and they can run the super

:07:58. > :08:02.soft? We heard from Christian Horner the difference between the

:08:02. > :08:06.two tyres this weekend has not been what we have been getting used to

:08:06. > :08:09.as a split between the prime and the option and the last Grand Prix

:08:09. > :08:13.in Japan, it was more than one second performance gain between the

:08:13. > :08:17.prime and the option. Here we are seeing a smaller gap and crucially,

:08:17. > :08:21.we are seeing the tyres hold on. It doesn't seem to be that they are

:08:21. > :08:31.able to do the time every time on the first lap. We saw Sebastian

:08:31. > :08:35.Vettel go fastest on the third lap. We could see certain teams dropping

:08:35. > :08:41.out of the operating window of these tyres and others benefiting.

:08:41. > :08:46.I don't see it as a fait accompli this is a Red Bull and let's have

:08:46. > :08:51.them ticking the boxes in qualifying. This could be mixed up.

:08:51. > :09:00.Alonso leads the championship by four four points from Vettel. Kimi

:09:00. > :09:04.Raikkonen is third place. Massa is ahead of Perez now courtesy of that

:09:04. > :09:09.podium finish last time, Massa has been behind Perez all season in

:09:09. > :09:16.terms of points. Mark Webber's problems with his car have been

:09:16. > :09:21.solved. So Webber will be out to qualify, but he didn't get a run on

:09:21. > :09:26.the super soft tyre. Fernando Alonso Was sixth fastest in the

:09:26. > :09:31.practise session this morning. Felipe Massa was eighth quickest in

:09:31. > :09:35.the constructors championship, Ferrari sit 20 points behind

:09:35. > :09:40.McLaren. A margin over Lotus, but nothing particularly comfortable.

:09:40. > :09:43.They are chasing to keep that advantage that they have for Alonso

:09:43. > :09:46.over Vettel, but they know that qualifying could be a tough one.

:09:46. > :09:51.There is Sebastian Vettel. The pole position winner last time out in

:09:51. > :09:56.Japan. He had four pole positions this year and of course, vitally

:09:56. > :10:00.for him, he went on to win the race with Alonso failing to score and

:10:00. > :10:08.closed the championship gap and Romain Grosjean might have been

:10:08. > :10:12.struggling on his first laps, but he has done well in qualifying. He

:10:12. > :10:16.qualified second in Hungary. You have Romain Grosjean in a car

:10:16. > :10:21.capable of making the top ten and we saw Sebastian Vettel walking

:10:21. > :10:27.through the back of the garage and we have only less than ten seconds

:10:27. > :10:31.to the start of the session. Tim Burton getting -- Timo Glock

:10:31. > :10:35.getting ready to go as well. The session gets underway.

:10:35. > :10:40.Heikki Kovalainen is the first on to the track in the Caterham.

:10:40. > :10:44.Kovalainen had a battle with his team-mate in practise. Petrov was

:10:44. > :10:53.quickest, some three tenths quickest in morning morning and

:10:53. > :10:56.Charles Pic was not far behind. Charles Pic was not far behind.

:10:56. > :11:01.Jenson Button is not not coming out straightaway the track is dusty. It

:11:01. > :11:10.is cleaning up. But you can see dust off the line and in the pit

:11:10. > :11:14.lane, David? The only supporting race is a a race of run what you

:11:14. > :11:20.have brung! I never saw such a weird selection of touring cars in

:11:20. > :11:23.my life. Not ideal ahead of a qualifying session to be going out

:11:23. > :11:27.and trying to discover where is the oil and the dirt that wasn't there

:11:27. > :11:33.in the free practise session. Time to check back in with Gary.

:11:33. > :11:39.Gary, what can we expect in terms of lap times to make it through to

:11:39. > :11:44.the top 17 which is what they are trying to do? If you are trying to

:11:44. > :11:49.predict from practise three, you would say 38.203 is OK, but the

:11:49. > :11:53.track has been evolving. There is more grip. If I was the top team I

:11:53. > :11:57.would make sure I was in the 38s before I would park the car in the

:11:57. > :12:06.garage. We will keep an eye on that. 1.38

:12:06. > :12:11.the time. Pole position last year was at 1.37.8. Lewis Hamilton did a

:12:11. > :12:16.1.37.5 last year. So we will keep an eye on the times. Heikki

:12:16. > :12:20.Kovalainen on the track. And all alone. There should be no issues

:12:20. > :12:27.providing no one comes out of the pit lane. A difficult pit lane exit.

:12:27. > :12:33.We were talking about it off air earlier, Ben. This is his opening

:12:33. > :12:36.section which is all about how fast can your car go in a straight line?

:12:36. > :12:42.It has this street circuit feel because this area around the track

:12:42. > :12:46.is meant to be developed into apartments and houses and shopping

:12:46. > :12:51.malls. It hasn't happened yet. A huge amount of energy going into

:12:51. > :12:55.the brakes there and another blast along the support pits for whenever

:12:55. > :13:03.they will have support races. I am sure the culture of motor racing

:13:03. > :13:09.will build here in Korea. Heikki is wide. Off apex turn five and look

:13:09. > :13:14.at this, hooking back over into the exit and into this section and this

:13:14. > :13:19.is one that when we we gets opportunity to see in-car footage

:13:19. > :13:23.it is a joy to watch the drivers taking a Grand Prix car at 150mph

:13:23. > :13:26.and letting the reigns lose and allowing it to deliver that

:13:26. > :13:30.impressive speed. From that, it starts to tighten up

:13:30. > :13:37.and you have got this really interesting double left-hander at

:13:37. > :13:41.turn 11 which Nico Hulkenberg mentioned to you. It spits you out,

:13:41. > :13:45.turn 12, and now you are coming into the really twisty bit? This is

:13:45. > :13:50.the end of the lap. You see the dust getting brought on to the

:13:50. > :13:55.circuit. As you run through the slow corners, you don't have the

:13:55. > :14:00.downforce. You have the long eject out of turn 17 through the short

:14:00. > :14:07.apex of 18 and the end of the lap. Where does this put him? Oh, pole

:14:07. > :14:12.position. He was the only man on the track, well done Heikki!

:14:12. > :14:17.A little bit off what he achieved this morning. Track temperatures

:14:17. > :14:21.are up three se grease since -- degrees since practise this morning.

:14:21. > :14:25.The track is cleaning up as we go throughout the course of the

:14:25. > :14:30.weekend. Sebastian Vettel is looking focused now as they get him

:14:30. > :14:36.ready to go. The other Caterham of Vitaly Petrov. They had a brake

:14:36. > :14:41.problem and the team were telling him not to overlap the brake and

:14:41. > :14:44.the throttle. We are on board now with Kimi Raikkonen. Kimi has this

:14:44. > :14:50.new exhaust system which they are hoping will provide them with more

:14:50. > :14:59.grip and more downforce. Let's just watch him as he goes on to his

:14:59. > :15:03.flying lap and watch the on board tell omtry -- telemetry. DRS and

:15:03. > :15:07.KERS being used on this long run out of turn two and then you just

:15:07. > :15:17.basically sit there and spot your braking point. There will be a huge

:15:17. > :15:26.

:15:26. > :15:33.amount of energy when he hits the the top, popping out of the cockpit.

:15:33. > :15:42.Again, a large amount of energy, he gets the apex well. Then, an

:15:42. > :15:52.awkward section, you have to be patient. Releasing the last part of

:15:52. > :15:55.

:15:55. > :16:02.KERS, after five corners, it shows how fast the opening lap is.

:16:02. > :16:07.A fairly tidy lap, traffic ahead which will cause an difficulties.

:16:07. > :16:14.He may end up with penalties for blocking, that was a Mercedes

:16:14. > :16:20.getting out of the way. He has Nico Rosberg in front of him. Hopefully

:16:20. > :16:24.that won't cost him too much. This may be a factor in qualifying, this

:16:24. > :16:32.final sector, it is almost impossible to overtake, you have to

:16:32. > :16:42.move off line. Has he got enough fuel? Probably not. What we have

:16:42. > :16:43.

:16:43. > :16:47.seen this morning, looking at the yellow tyres... Dropping into 11,

:16:47. > :16:52.unquestionably he was held up, that was Romain Grosjean behind the

:16:52. > :16:59.Mercedes. They were ganging up together.

:16:59. > :17:05.Romain Grosjean, I believe, was on an out-lap, he was tried to get his

:17:05. > :17:10.car prepared. That shouldn't result in a penalty for the Mercedes car.

:17:10. > :17:16.We have seen this throughout the weekend already, the Ferraris are

:17:16. > :17:22.very fast on the straight line sections, but they lose out in the

:17:22. > :17:26.mid- part and final part, with the twisting. You get very different

:17:26. > :17:33.performers on different parts of the circuit. It is interesting to

:17:33. > :17:38.see the Ferrari philosophy, the engines are restricted to 18,000

:17:38. > :17:42.rpm, there is a freeze on development, so been quick in that

:17:42. > :17:52.first sector, as Fernando Alonso shows good pace, Nico Hulkenberg

:17:52. > :17:57.

:17:57. > :18:05.went past. That first set it is about getting the drag from the car.

:18:05. > :18:12.He beats the time off maulden macro. They were down to 1.37s on the

:18:12. > :18:17.super soft tyres. Nico Hulkenberg has done a pretty

:18:17. > :18:27.good middle sector, not as quick as maulden macro, who has set the pace

:18:27. > :18:30.

:18:31. > :18:37.currently. -- Maldonado. Nico Hulkenberg completes his lap.

:18:37. > :18:44.He goes bird on his first proper run. Quite a few cars are on track.

:18:44. > :18:53.Someone going very slowly, a white flag, and then... Narain

:18:53. > :18:59.Karthikeyan. The team radio was saying, no pedal. Clearly, there

:18:59. > :19:02.was some retardation suggesting the brake pedal went soft on him. That

:19:02. > :19:09.could have been a very uncomfortable situation, thankfully

:19:09. > :19:17.the other car cleared the apex of turn three. It shows FIA safety

:19:17. > :19:23.standards today, at a huge amount of run off for them to slide down.

:19:23. > :19:32.Pastor Maldonado looks as if he can improve on the second fastest.

:19:32. > :19:42.Plenty of front-runners to come out, and maulden macro stays second

:19:42. > :19:43.

:19:43. > :19:50.fastest. -- Maldonado. That was a good lap, probably the fastest of

:19:50. > :20:00.all, yes, it is, Felipe Massa, on the yellow tie, the harder of the

:20:00. > :20:00.

:20:00. > :20:06.two compounds. -- tyre. The early days in this qualifying

:20:06. > :20:12.session, but Felipe Massa is driving like a man with good news.

:20:12. > :20:22.Kimi Raikkonen improving on that time. It is interesting, Ben,

:20:22. > :20:29.people are choosing to do several laps. With a penalty of carrying

:20:29. > :20:36.more fuel. But they know they gain more from finding where the tyres

:20:37. > :20:43.are, gaining confidence. You can see how hard he is working the

:20:43. > :20:48.wheel. Into turn one. Finally, Mark Webber is heading out. Sebastian

:20:48. > :20:56.Vettel has gone out as well. Gary, just take a look at Lewis Hamilton

:20:56. > :21:01.here. In lock up into turn one, we have seen this over the weekend.

:21:01. > :21:06.have seen Lewis Hamilton in the run-off area, having difficulty

:21:06. > :21:14.getting the brakes into turn one. It can be a heating issue. They

:21:14. > :21:19.have plenty of the spot -- at stopping points, so it must be a

:21:19. > :21:23.fundamental engine issue. In turns of the difference between be two

:21:23. > :21:33.tyres, how many teams will run the super soft in this qualifying

:21:33. > :21:34.

:21:34. > :21:39.session? There are only a few tenths difference. But that is

:21:39. > :21:49.really important. Going back to what David said about the brakes,

:21:49. > :21:58.and McLaren. You either brake well, or you lock the front tyres. The

:21:58. > :22:05.last thing you want to do... You can see Hamilton here. Kamui

:22:05. > :22:11.Kobayashi just crossing the line in 13th. Peter Sauber has handed the

:22:11. > :22:21.reins over to Monisha Kaltenborn. Celebrating his birthday it out

:22:21. > :22:21.

:22:21. > :22:26.here in Korea. Schumacher, currently 6th fastest.

:22:26. > :22:32.You are riding with Lewis Hamilton, as he has to correct a little bit

:22:32. > :22:42.of a slide. Coming out of 16. He runs it wealth through, going for

:22:42. > :22:44.

:22:44. > :22:49.the line. -- well through. It does seem as if Lewis Hamilton is

:22:49. > :22:57.unhappy with the balance of his car through the three practice sessions.

:22:57. > :23:04.It's the top 17 which count in Q1, and who will not make it through.

:23:04. > :23:12.At the moment, Mark Webber has yet to set a time, nor has Sebastian

:23:12. > :23:19.Vettel. Narain Karthikeyan is out of this session. He won't be going

:23:19. > :23:26.through in the HRT. Another good lap for Felipe Massa. He improves

:23:26. > :23:35.on his time, but not as quick as Kimi Raikkonen.

:23:35. > :23:42.Sebastian Vettel has been fastest in the middle sector. Across the

:23:42. > :23:47.line he went, fastest overall. Suddenly, six-tenths faster than

:23:47. > :23:52.anyone else. He he has done it on his third lap

:23:52. > :23:57.completed. Kimi Raikkonen took five laps to set his time. The problem

:23:57. > :24:01.is when you have to do multiple laps, the tyres have to divide

:24:01. > :24:10.kilometres total distance on them. The chemical change starts to take

:24:10. > :24:20.place as soon as you put beat her through energy on the racetrack. --

:24:20. > :24:32.

:24:32. > :24:38.how early. Remember, Gary told us a low 1.39.

:24:38. > :24:42.Plenty of people are outside that at the moment. We will see a lot of

:24:42. > :24:47.track action, no surprises, in the final part of qualifying. Narain

:24:47. > :24:52.Karthikeyan will not be able to come back out again. The drop zone

:24:52. > :24:59.at the moment, Heikki Kovalainen and Petrov, Bruno Senna, Timo Glock

:24:59. > :25:04.and Charles Pic. And Pedro de la Rosa no doubt will get another run

:25:04. > :25:10.in before the end of this session. But, Narain Karthikeyan it is out.

:25:10. > :25:16.Red Bull, first and third. The Clarence second and 7th. Felipe

:25:16. > :25:26.Massa is faster than Fernando Alonso. Then Pedro de la Rosa --

:25:26. > :25:29.

:25:29. > :25:33.Nico Rosberg. We now look at Pastor Maldonado. He has been pretty

:25:33. > :25:38.impressive on occasions, the last time he ran the super soft tyres in

:25:38. > :25:41.Singapore, he qualified in second place. We know he has good

:25:41. > :25:47.qualifying pace but Williams clearly uncomfortable. His team-

:25:47. > :25:51.mate sitting in 20th. It looks as if it is a battle between Toro

:25:51. > :25:57.Rosso and Williams for which one of those at two might drop out of the

:25:57. > :26:02.session. We're also seeing Paul di Resta choosing to go out on the

:26:02. > :26:07.super soft. Teams saying they are going for the tyre to give the

:26:07. > :26:17.marginally more pace. That tells you a lot about how important it is

:26:17. > :26:24.to make it through into that top 16. Turn one, not too deep. This long

:26:24. > :26:32.straight, the speed trap is at the end. Jean-Eric Vergne in Toro Rosso,

:26:32. > :26:39.he has the fastest speed at that speed trip -- track. A low figure

:26:39. > :26:48.for Pastor Maldonado as he comes down there. A surprise, given he

:26:48. > :26:52.had his DRS wide open. Could it be a KERS issue? A little bit

:26:52. > :26:59.surprising. We're presuming that figure is 100% accurate, it may not

:26:59. > :27:04.be. Whether he lifted off down the main straight and they have decided

:27:04. > :27:10.to go through on the next lap. Fernando Alonso, still sitting in

:27:11. > :27:20.the pit lane. Gary, you go bust your forecast earlier, are you

:27:21. > :27:22.

:27:22. > :27:32.sticky with that? Yes, the track is changing quickly. He did that to

:27:32. > :27:42.7.6 this morning, he should be able to do 38.2. I think it will still

:27:42. > :27:42.

:27:42. > :27:48.be in the 39.0 area. Mark Webber crosses the line, in

:27:48. > :27:55.the second, the fastest final sector of anybody. Lili two-tenths

:27:55. > :27:59.slower than Sebastian Vettel. Surely he won't have used his red

:27:59. > :28:09.tyres. Bruno Senna only made it into the final part of, find once

:28:09. > :28:16.

:28:16. > :28:21.this year. -- part of qualifying. Sir Bert not looking as strong as

:28:21. > :28:26.in Japan last week when Kamui Kobayashi qualified.

:28:26. > :28:33.It does look as if they are struggling. Given that the tyres

:28:33. > :28:38.seem resilient, well that play into their hands tomorrow? We know they

:28:38. > :28:45.have been good on their ties, it may come into play on race day.

:28:45. > :28:50.Today is all about battling for who has the fastest car, and the

:28:50. > :28:55.benefit of not having to be hooked up into the middle of that pack

:28:55. > :28:58.which can be costly. The concertina effect into turn one and turn three,

:28:58. > :29:07.you would prefer to be closer to the front.

:29:07. > :29:11.A replay there, a lock-up, missing his apex. He made an adjustment on

:29:11. > :29:19.his steering wheel, that could be anything, the engine, a torque

:29:19. > :29:24.problem. When you lock up, you lose some bite from the front axle. You

:29:24. > :29:31.get a little bit wide, you have to use more steering angle to get the

:29:32. > :29:37.car turned, which compounds the time lost. An important lap, to get

:29:37. > :29:47.something representative. That should be safe, into tenth place.

:29:47. > :29:47.

:29:48. > :29:57.Bruno Senna has done a 1:29.4. A more promising pace from the

:29:57. > :30:07.Sauber. Let us see what team-mate Perez does, asked to do another lap

:30:07. > :30:17.

:30:17. > :30:23.what Sergio Perez is doing and I'm sure they are thinking, "Yes" every

:30:23. > :30:32.time he shows a bit of form. TEAM RADIO: We need another lap for

:30:32. > :30:42.sure. We are looking into it. We are looking into it. Yes, one more

:30:42. > :30:44.

:30:44. > :30:48.time lap. Ricciardo does go sixth. Here is

:30:48. > :30:54.his team-mate, Jean-Eric Vergne. His qualifying improved in reen

:30:55. > :30:59.races and he has been much, much closer to Ricciardo. Let's see, he

:30:59. > :31:05.has outqualified him recently. Let's see if he can keep this up.

:31:05. > :31:14.He did drive here briefly in the Friday practise sessions. He goes

:31:14. > :31:18.fifth and that's a a fraction of a second quicker. Michael Schumacher

:31:18. > :31:22.is way down. He is in 18th place. He is in the drop zone and we're

:31:22. > :31:27.into the final part because the chequered flag is out now and

:31:27. > :31:33.Michael Schumacher doing his up most, you he is not -- but he is

:31:33. > :31:39.not looking particularly - he has got personal best in first and

:31:39. > :31:44.second sectors. Senna is in danger territory, but he is on track.

:31:44. > :31:48.Alonso trying to improve. Across goes Schumacher. Alonso needs to

:31:48. > :31:55.finish this lap off well to ensure he will go through into the next

:31:55. > :31:59.part of qualifying. He had to go for the super soft tyres, the the

:31:59. > :32:05.championship leader not in great shape. He is only 16th. He is only

:32:05. > :32:12.16th. Senna could go quicker, but he is the only one who could do at

:32:12. > :32:19.the moment. Senna is on a lap. The middle part is not brilliant. Is he

:32:19. > :32:25.going to get dropped out? Hamilton is 17th. Hamilton in 17th. Senna is

:32:25. > :32:28.back in the pits. Senna missed out again and that's desperately

:32:28. > :32:34.disappointing for him. Very disappointing for him and

:32:35. > :32:43.that's as close as you want to be to not making it throw. You have

:32:43. > :32:47.Hamilton and Alonso. Hamilton only 17th. And Alonso in

:32:47. > :32:52.16th place and it is, well, Senna, moving out of the way there. Well,

:32:52. > :32:58.he was told to abort the lap and that was very fair of Bruno Senna

:32:58. > :33:05.pulling off the line to allow the cars to go through, but

:33:05. > :33:10.disappointing. Four more qualifying attempts this this year and no seat

:33:10. > :33:16.for Bruno Senna as yet. Saturdays seem to be his bogey time.

:33:16. > :33:22.Those knocked out, Bruno Senna, Vitaly Petrov who went faster than

:33:22. > :33:31.Heikki Kovalainen, Charles Pic has outqualified Timo Glock, de la Rosa

:33:31. > :33:41.is out and so is is NARRATOis Karthikeyan. Who would

:33:41. > :33:46.have shot that a shot of Lewis Hamilton sitting in the garage was

:33:46. > :33:54.worth getting out of bed for! I wouldn't want to be sitting in

:33:54. > :34:01.the pits. Interesting. Here is de la Rosa making his way into the pit

:34:01. > :34:07.lane. We will look at his pit his testimony mate on the track. --

:34:07. > :34:14.team-mate on the track. He doesn't have a seat guaranteed for next

:34:14. > :34:18.year. Petrov is in danger of losing that seat. It could be all change.

:34:18. > :34:21.There has been rumours that Vitaly Petrov is struggling to raise

:34:21. > :34:25.finance and the way this sport operates, that's a necessity. Has

:34:25. > :34:29.he done enough for another team to take a look if he doesn't have

:34:29. > :34:35.money? I thought he did a good job last year. He hasn't, but we know

:34:35. > :34:42.that Kovalainen is a race winner. He was always going to be a tough

:34:42. > :34:49.competitor and team-mate. In a word, probably he hasn't done enough.

:34:49. > :34:53.We spoke to Karthikeyan. He was telling us they are improving the

:34:53. > :34:57.car and he has a failure of the front right brake disc. Neither of

:34:57. > :35:03.us have driven in Formula One, but we can imagine how scary that would

:35:03. > :35:07.be? When the brake disc breaks you are a passenger and he was a

:35:07. > :35:11.passenger from a long way out there. He was pirouetting down the track.

:35:11. > :35:14.It is not a nice feeling, he was lucky it was in qualifying and

:35:14. > :35:18.particularly in this qualifying so there were no cars around him and

:35:18. > :35:21.he escaped with just being able to make sure that the car runs

:35:21. > :35:23.tomorrow in the race. Vitaly Petrov quicker than his

:35:23. > :35:29.team-mate out there today. Let's tear from him.

:35:29. > :35:36.Tell us about your qualifying. You outqualified your team-mate which

:35:36. > :35:42.is one positive? It is a big positive moment. If you look back,

:35:42. > :35:48.it was a good surprise for all of us and we did a good job yesterday.

:35:48. > :35:53.We finished late. I think we will make a good set-up and that's why I

:35:53. > :35:57.was quick today. I'm really happy. He does still want a seat for next

:35:57. > :36:01.year and those performances will help him. Let's bring Ben and David

:36:01. > :36:10.help him. Let's bring Ben and David into the conversation. I spoke to

:36:10. > :36:13.Bob Fernly at Force India and he says it is a scrap between Mercedes

:36:13. > :36:19.and Force India for the final two slots in the final part of

:36:19. > :36:25.qualifying? It really is, Jake. That mid-field battle, it is all

:36:25. > :36:28.about constructors points, Mercedes versus Sauber. They are all chasing

:36:28. > :36:32.as many points as possible. Keep a close eye on the mid-field, but Red

:36:32. > :36:37.Bull are looking strong at the top. David, were you surprised with

:36:37. > :36:42.Kovalainen what he said to you? Well, I was surprised by his

:36:42. > :36:46.openness, but it did seem like his shoulders were down a bit. I wonder

:36:46. > :36:56.if that reflected his performance. He has been the energy in that team

:36:56. > :36:59.from a driving point view. I don't want to take anything away from

:36:59. > :37:05.Vitali, I wonder if it is a reflection of him not being in a

:37:05. > :37:10.happy place now. There was a rumour of a row between his management and

:37:10. > :37:14.the owners of that team. I wonder if you have heard anything?

:37:14. > :37:24.haven't. For me, it is one of the key aspects going forward.

:37:24. > :37:24.

:37:24. > :37:28.It is time to watch the second part rushing to come out on to the

:37:28. > :37:33.circuit for this 15 minute session. Each session getting shorter. 10

:37:33. > :37:39.minutes for the film part. All about -- final part. All about

:37:39. > :37:49.getting into the top ten. Looking at those who had to use the super

:37:49. > :37:50.

:37:50. > :37:54.soft tyre, one Ferrari did and one didn't. Massa didn't. Massa's boost

:37:54. > :38:04.in confidence in getting that podium last week seem to have fired

:38:04. > :38:06.

:38:06. > :38:10.He was strong in prepractise in za in Suzuka. He was upgraded due to

:38:10. > :38:15.penalties applied. We see Sergio Perez. He decides to get out there

:38:15. > :38:21.nice and early on the super soft, the option tyres and building his

:38:21. > :38:26.lap and around the lapel receive various instructions to remind him

:38:26. > :38:32.to get the engine in the right mode. Working on building temperature in

:38:32. > :38:39.the brake and tyres and being followed out by his team-mate. This

:38:39. > :38:42.is a very questionable pit out. I am sure during the tomorrow, we

:38:43. > :38:47.will look at this. Gary, we are seeing the two Saubers

:38:47. > :38:51.out first. They are on the super soft tyre. Looking at the wear

:38:51. > :38:56.patterns that we have seen, they maybe able to get a reasonable lap

:38:56. > :39:03.in on a set of super softs they have run? I imagine they will go

:39:03. > :39:11.out for this run. This slow lap should clean up the right front

:39:11. > :39:20.where the graining is. It will be a tough session this because I think

:39:20. > :39:23.38.5 will see it through. When you look at the Q1, Hamilton did a

:39:23. > :39:28.39.18, ten cars if you blink, you will miss it.

:39:28. > :39:33.That's just how competitive it is. It is not as if this is a short

:39:33. > :39:36.track. It is three-and-a-half miles, 5.6 kilometres and the difference

:39:36. > :39:42.is that tiny. I heard a number of the drivers saying if it wean for

:39:42. > :39:48.its location and journey time from Europe it would be a perfect test

:39:48. > :39:53.track because it puts you on the top top edge of your top speed and

:39:54. > :39:58.you have the mechanical section so it ticks all the boxes as a real

:39:58. > :40:07.reflection of how you get the car working well and the tyres as we

:40:07. > :40:16.see Sergio Perez makes a nice A nice nice apex in turn one and gu

:40:16. > :40:19.for a nice -- you go for a nice 800 meter drive, creeping up to 200mph.

:40:19. > :40:24.Before hitting the brakes and down into the very, very tight turn

:40:24. > :40:34.three. A little bit of correction needed. He qualified 17th last year

:40:34. > :40:37.when he came for the first time driving for Sauber. They attempt ed

:40:37. > :40:42.a two stop. Last year, they were they were kind to their tyres and

:40:42. > :40:46.he had to make a late third stop with only a couple of laps to go.

:40:46. > :40:51.So that dropped them down the order from where they should have been.

:40:51. > :40:57.It doesn't look like the Sauber has the Suzuka qualifying pace they

:40:57. > :41:03.enjoyed a week ago. It shows how different this track is to Suzuka.

:41:03. > :41:08.What separates this circuit from Suzuka, there are a number of

:41:08. > :41:14.corners that lead into the next corner. In Suzuka and Spa, you get

:41:14. > :41:18.the impression they were designed by the natural path that people

:41:18. > :41:22.walked. When you start with a green field site and it is designed on a

:41:22. > :41:27.computer in Germany, a lot of the corners don't flow. You get a

:41:27. > :41:30.little bit out of sequence and you clip a kerb and you end up having

:41:30. > :41:34.to give away time because you haven't got the car on the right

:41:34. > :41:43.line. Let's see what the benchmark lap

:41:43. > :41:48.time is? 1.39.9. According to Gary that wouldn't be enough for top ten.

:41:48. > :41:52.He did a 38.6 earlier, but we think that was on a scrub set of tyres

:41:52. > :41:58.and if that's the case, it was a good opening gambit.

:41:58. > :42:02.TEAM RADIO: Jenson is a 12 second gap behind. We need to keep working

:42:02. > :42:07.the brakes. The teams informing the drivers

:42:07. > :42:13.about their position and where the traffic maybe and these guys

:42:13. > :42:17.obviously keeping a very wary eye on the track positioning. They

:42:17. > :42:20.cannot get done for holding up another car or it is a grid penalty

:42:20. > :42:23.for tomorrow. Jenson Button's engineer that

:42:23. > :42:28.passes that information, I think he has got one of the most soothing

:42:28. > :42:31.voices of the engineers. If I had to have someone reading me a

:42:31. > :42:40.bedtime story, I would choose that man!

:42:40. > :42:46.Webb err finishing -- Webber finish the lap. Turn 17, a little bit like

:42:46. > :42:56.Valencia. It is like a street crack. Webber is fastest for now. 1.38.2

:42:56. > :43:01.and that's a 1.38.5 for for Kobayashi. Paul di Resta is third.

:43:01. > :43:05.Jean-Eric Vergne is currently fifth. Let's see what Alonso does? He goes

:43:05. > :43:10.fastest of all so far. Looking a little bit better for Alonso than

:43:10. > :43:15.perhaps it did in the first session, but Vettel beating that. 1.37.7 for

:43:15. > :43:19.the Red Bull. Massa, the first set of the super

:43:19. > :43:23.soft tyres that we have seen Massa run in this session so far and now

:43:23. > :43:27.he is down towards the latter part of the lap as well. He comes past a

:43:27. > :43:31.big big grandstand on the outside of the two left-handers and tucks

:43:31. > :43:38.it in close to the wall. He missed the kerb on the left or the high

:43:38. > :43:43.kerb and he goes fourth quickest for now. So it is Vettel, London's

:43:43. > :43:47.Alonso, Mark Webber, Massa sharing the top spots at the moment.

:43:47. > :43:51.Exciting stuff as the lap times are tumbling and everyone knows they

:43:51. > :43:57.have got to get out there and get a feel for how this track is evolving

:43:57. > :44:03.and Lewis Hamilton we're seeing is and Jenson Button has just finished

:44:03. > :44:10.his lap, but we have got the information on Lewis Hamilton.

:44:10. > :44:15.Button down seven tenths of a second to Sebastian Vettel. It is a

:44:15. > :44:19.good lap. Is it enough? No, it is third fastest. Behind Alonso, just

:44:19. > :44:24.a fraction of a second so far behind Alonso and yes, another lock

:44:24. > :44:28.up, that's what we have been seeing a lot from the McLaren so far this

:44:28. > :44:35.weekend. He took pole position last year, but right now, it looks to be

:44:35. > :44:39.just a little struggle to get that car nice and neatly into turn one.

:44:39. > :44:44.Well, I think that was the opening part of his lap and that would have

:44:44. > :44:48.cost him time getting on the power. You gain time when you don't slow

:44:48. > :44:52.down enough on the way in and it is that compromise as to whether you

:44:52. > :44:57.are able to get the car rotated and get it turned and get the throttle

:44:57. > :45:02.open. Missing an apex by a small margin is a good thing.

:45:02. > :45:06.TEAM RADIO: Have another go, please. Have another go, please.

:45:06. > :45:10.They want to be safer than that so they have asked him to go again and

:45:10. > :45:16.the tyre is allowing them to do that which I find intriguing. 11th

:45:17. > :45:20.for the moment for Rosberg. He is in the drop zone. Rosberg, Perez,

:45:20. > :45:25.Nico Hulkenberg, Maldonado and Michael Schumacher all in the drop

:45:25. > :45:28.zone, but Michael Schumacher is on a lap. Gary, these super soft tyres

:45:28. > :45:38.are holding up very well in allowing people to go and do

:45:38. > :45:52.

:45:52. > :46:02.on this second time lap. It depends on the car set up who gains the

:46:02. > :46:41.

:46:42. > :46:51.bit of attention as the clock ticks away. The second part of qualifying,

:46:52. > :46:57.

:46:57. > :47:03.Raikkonen, Kamui Kobayashi. Outside the top 10, Paul di Resta, Nico

:47:03. > :47:13.Rosberg, Perez, Nico Hulkenberg. And looking at the top speeds.

:47:13. > :47:23.huge gap. A replay of Jenson Button. The McLaren lock up. He seemed to

:47:23. > :47:39.

:47:39. > :47:44.have a very stiff front end of the kilometres faster, and whether that

:47:44. > :47:48.remains to be seen, it gives them a useful speed advantage for tomorrow.

:47:48. > :47:53.Nico Hulkenberg has asked for some more front wing, he has understeer

:47:53. > :48:00.as well. A couple of drivers reported understeer, is that

:48:00. > :48:08.something to expect, Gary? softer the tyre, it is pushing at

:48:08. > :48:18.the front. They will have to live with that in the fast part. That's

:48:18. > :48:26.

:48:26. > :48:29.OK with Newt tyres which have a lot The drivers who won't make it into

:48:29. > :48:33.the top 10 but we will see that change as we get ready for the next

:48:34. > :48:39.part. The psychologically, it makes a difference when you go up your

:48:39. > :48:45.last run. Sergio Perez, closing his eyes, visualising what he needs to

:48:45. > :48:52.do. Let's say you are Lewis Hamilton in third place, you'll go

:48:52. > :48:58.out thinking, it is for the others to beat me. But for Nico Rosberg,

:48:58. > :49:05.in P12, or Perez, if you don't deliver on this lap, you are

:49:05. > :49:09.definitely not in the top 10. This is an in a battle, driver against

:49:09. > :49:16.driver, without actually seeing each other on the race track. It's

:49:16. > :49:24.about strength of character. When you say you need more front wing,

:49:24. > :49:29.do you on the next set of tyre. TEAM RADIO: New options, he said

:49:29. > :49:33.their fronts wasn't ready for the new sector.

:49:33. > :49:43.Interesting Feedback, both sides of the garage working together. In it

:49:43. > :49:48.was a case of clarifying. Soaking up information, passing it on to

:49:48. > :49:53.Michael who is looking at these stronger of the two Mercedes driver.

:49:53. > :49:58.As I say that, Nico Rosberg will now go out. Michael is looking

:49:59. > :50:05.pretty handy, pitting his tyres switched on for the first sector

:50:05. > :50:11.which Nico Rosberg has been struggling with. Michael had a

:50:11. > :50:16.fourth-place finish, up to 2010, his best finish of his comeback.

:50:16. > :50:20.Whether he can do something here today. We are going to find out

:50:20. > :50:27.pretty soon, just two minutes to go in the second part of qualifying,

:50:27. > :50:31.the battle to get into the top 10. Paul di Resta heads into the first

:50:31. > :50:41.corner, Felipe Massa keeps up of the way.

:50:41. > :50:42.

:50:42. > :50:46.TEAM RADIO: Looked after the tyres in the high speed. -- look. You do

:50:46. > :50:54.that by simply not leaning on to the side of the car through the

:50:54. > :50:59.turns. You have nothing left for the last sector when you have less

:50:59. > :51:04.downforce when the car is running at a lower speed. It costs him more

:51:04. > :51:14.time. A lock up from thought macro but I don't think that will cost

:51:25. > :51:32.particular, the last one, where the aerodynamics are applying

:51:32. > :51:35.themselves and pushing the car down on to the ground. You can see how

:51:36. > :51:45.they are pulling the car and it is responding.

:51:46. > :51:52.

:51:52. > :52:02.If a tight and a tricky section, lap could be put in him into

:52:02. > :52:04.

:52:04. > :52:09.contention to put him into the top Resta is only 11, he hasn't done

:52:09. > :52:19.enough. And his team-mate, Nico Hulkenberg, pushing it out, has he

:52:19. > :52:29.done enough? 7th. He is definitely up there, is it enough to stay

:52:29. > :52:30.

:52:30. > :52:36.there? 1:38.4. It put cent in the top 10. The chequered flag is up.

:52:36. > :52:41.For the second race in succession, A Williams fails to get into the

:52:41. > :52:51.second part of qualifying. Let us hear the last part of the

:52:51. > :52:52.

:52:52. > :52:57.lap. The yellow means they have to show a slower sector time. Perez

:52:57. > :53:02.goes tent. He might be allowed to kick that if he shows his third and

:53:02. > :53:12.final set that is slower. Only in that section where the yellow flag

:53:12. > :53:18.it is. Nico Rosberg, up to seventh. Kimi goes Feb. Jenson Button

:53:18. > :53:23.crosses the line as well. But he is not in, he is 11th, he has not made

:53:23. > :53:28.it through. Hamilton has. It is about how much they slow down in

:53:28. > :53:38.the final set tough. In Japan, we saw this, and drivers were allowed

:53:38. > :53:46.to keep their times. It comes down to tiny amounts and real judgment

:53:46. > :53:54.by the drivers to finish a lap, and control that final set to speed.

:53:54. > :54:02.They have it displayed in the centre of their steering wheel.

:54:02. > :54:09.TEAM RADIO: Week are P11. That is disappointing.

:54:09. > :54:16.Let us take a look back. Down into turn one, we saw repeatedly the

:54:16. > :54:23.McLaren locking up. Excuse me, this is not turn one, turn 11 or turn 12.

:54:23. > :54:28.I will get it right this time, turn four, costing him time. A localised

:54:28. > :54:36.hot spot on the tyre. Disappointment for Jenson Button

:54:36. > :54:41.and Daniel Ricciardo. Both Toro Rossos not making it into the top

:54:41. > :54:51.Pastor Maldonado are not making it through, nor Paul di Resta, he will

:54:51. > :55:20.

:55:20. > :55:26.with the Sauber, the big pointing - - big talking point is Jenson

:55:26. > :55:32.Button, 11th. I don't know why this has happened, this is a quick car.

:55:32. > :55:37.He must have got his positioning wrong. It is a shame. You take your

:55:37. > :55:42.bike away and suddenly everyone rushes past. It shows how hard it

:55:42. > :55:47.is. Riding on board here, clearly an issue for Daniel Ricciardo, it

:55:47. > :55:50.makes it hard for the other of riders to not push through the

:55:50. > :55:56.yellow flag sector because they are not sure if they will be punished,

:55:56. > :56:01.Eddie? Your instinct is to go as fast as you can. You try to put the

:56:01. > :56:11.left flag out of your mind but you dare not because you will lose grid

:56:11. > :56:13.

:56:13. > :56:20.position and be penalised. TEAM RADIO: Gearbox. Confirmation that

:56:20. > :56:29.Daniel Ricciardo had the problem. How tight visit to get into the top

:56:29. > :56:34.10? We have lost both Saubers, we have lost Force India, mild

:56:34. > :56:39.Barnardo -- Pastor Maldonado. We will have a look at dens and's

:56:40. > :56:48.efforts out there. We will wonder a long with Paul di Resta, thanks for

:56:48. > :56:53.talking to us, it was looking like a great lap? For there was a

:56:53. > :57:02.Ferrari coming out of the pit lane, I over-compensated. That was

:57:02. > :57:09.already a stumbling block. At the end, I actually went 100 slower

:57:10. > :57:16.than I did, it is unfortunate. Traffic has cost us getting into Q3.

:57:16. > :57:20.How important is it to have someone like Nico. Both you are fast, do

:57:20. > :57:24.you look to see what time he has done when you get out of the car?

:57:24. > :57:29.And of course you do. The frustrating thing is we did a very

:57:29. > :57:33.good time at the start of the session. We haven't been able to go

:57:33. > :57:38.faster purely because of traffic which has been an issue in Suzuka

:57:38. > :57:44.and here. It is costing people valuable places. It has put us in a

:57:44. > :57:49.difficult situation tomorrow because our car seemed strong.

:57:49. > :57:53.is you out on track, what is going through your head at this point?

:57:53. > :57:58.You can't actually see but the car is very sensitive to what is going

:57:58. > :58:08.on. As we get further into the corner, you pick up turbulent air,

:58:08. > :58:12.and unfortunately you need every valuable grip. The I am getting

:58:12. > :58:17.deja-vu, ensure we have the same conversation in Japan a week ago.

:58:17. > :58:21.That raised didn't pan out as you wanted but it was a show of what

:58:21. > :58:26.Force India can do. You must think if things go your way you can still

:58:26. > :58:31.pick up some points tomorrow? would say even more so based on a

:58:32. > :58:36.performance yesterday. We need to go into tomorrow and do a better

:58:36. > :58:46.job. We have a new set of tyres which will be fallible given it is

:58:46. > :58:48.

:58:48. > :58:57.a super soft compound. -- valuable. Paul, is it more exhausting walking

:58:57. > :59:02.down the pit lane? Particularly when you have to speak to us!

:59:02. > :59:07.is a long pit lane. Heading back to get to his garage. A difficult

:59:07. > :59:11.session for him? He is bitterly disappointed. He knows that time is

:59:12. > :59:16.in him and in the car, he just didn't put it up together. For

:59:16. > :59:24.whatever reason, he taught about fighting for every little corner,

:59:24. > :59:28.it eluded him at the end. What is more disappointing, he knows

:59:28. > :59:32.himself and Nico Hulkenberg, everyone is looking at those two,

:59:32. > :59:37.because one of them in my opinion is going to go. Let us show you a

:59:37. > :59:43.bit of Jenson Button, Kenya give us some idea how hard it is around the

:59:43. > :59:48.circuit to set your car up for this little Mickey Mouse section and to

:59:48. > :59:53.have speed in the first set of which is about minimum drag and low

:59:53. > :00:03.downforce, David? You want to have high tops bid which means you want

:00:03. > :00:04.

:00:04. > :00:09.a small wing angle. -- top speed. In this section, you don't have the

:00:09. > :00:19.load pushing down on the car. It does seem an apparent is struggling

:00:19. > :00:25.

:00:25. > :00:29.to get enough front load on the underway and Sebastian Vettel

:00:29. > :00:33.looking to take back-to-back pole positions. Ofs on pole last -- he

:00:33. > :00:37.was on pole last time out in Japan. Can he do it here? He has been on

:00:37. > :00:42.pole in the past here, but last year he got beaten by a certain

:00:43. > :00:50.Lewis Hamilton. A Hamilton looking to try and stay upfront and Alonso

:00:50. > :00:54.still looking for a top four start which he hasn't had in the last few

:00:54. > :00:59.races. What is going on? Rosberg sat with the green light and

:00:59. > :01:03.Michael Schumacher doing the same. So I would be, there is clearly a

:01:03. > :01:08.strategy and Michael Schumacher is sitting there. So unless he felt,

:01:08. > :01:12."Well, look, I need to get clear space so I will let the cars go."

:01:12. > :01:18.But I will be curious if Gary has a line on this, because Rosberg sat

:01:18. > :01:25.for 20 20 seconds before he moved and Michael Schumacher did the same

:01:25. > :01:29.thing. Why would you want to cool your tyres? Gary, have you got any

:01:29. > :01:33.idea why that might be? You bring the tyres up to the temperature you

:01:33. > :01:38.want to get out of the pits with and you are sitting there and not

:01:38. > :01:43.only is the tyres getting cooler, but the engine is getting hotter.

:01:43. > :01:53.Maybe he has a problem. Vetting has gone out behind the

:01:53. > :02:02.bunch and Nico Hulkenberg. Those two had a massive fight last year.

:02:02. > :02:06.It didn't look like Mark was making it easy for Lewis to pass. They

:02:06. > :02:11.need to find space which given there is a few cars within just

:02:11. > :02:16.looking here, we have Nico Hulkenberg passing through through

:02:16. > :02:22.we have got Rosberg coming out of S 2, they are condensed in one area

:02:22. > :02:27.of the track. One is going to come unstuck with traffic because you

:02:27. > :02:32.can't guarantee that everyone will drive a clear lap.

:02:32. > :02:40.Gary, do you have a prediction for a pole time? I think this year, we

:02:40. > :02:47.will be looking at 37.2, 37.3. The track keeps on on improving and you

:02:47. > :02:51.are never sure if you will lose two or three tenths.

:02:51. > :02:54.Alonso and just four points separate him in and Sebastian

:02:54. > :02:57.Vettel in the drivers championship. This has got to be a truly special

:02:57. > :03:02.lap from the World Championship leader to keep the fight going

:03:02. > :03:06.knowing the Red Bulls are fast in Korea. No, this first part

:03:06. > :03:12.straightforward. He managed to get through turns one and two without

:03:12. > :03:18.any lock ups. Let's see how he does on three? No big issue there. It

:03:18. > :03:23.looks to me like he is giving Grosjean a bit of extra tow. Let's

:03:23. > :03:32.keep an eye on what Grosjean does in these early parts of the lap. He

:03:32. > :03:36.goes wide as he runs through four. Sounds hesitant to me as he builds

:03:36. > :03:42.this opening lap in the last part of qualifying.

:03:42. > :03:47.Interestingly, Nico Hulkenberg has come back into the pits. It looks

:03:47. > :03:51.as though Nico Hulkenberg will not put in a represent I have

:03:51. > :03:55.representative lap time. We have seen that before. Nico Hulkenberg

:03:55. > :04:02.has come back into the pits which is interesting. Massa is on track

:04:02. > :04:12.at the same time as Alonso. Alonso has been doing a fine job boosted

:04:12. > :04:14.

:04:14. > :04:21.with the podium last time and now. In Monza both cars were quick.

:04:21. > :04:30.Monza is quicker. Massa throws down the gauntlet. Let's see Alonso.

:04:30. > :04:37.Alonso and is faster. 37.6. What about Hamilton? Can Hamilton go

:04:37. > :04:41.ahead of the Ferraris? No, he is only third. Webber goes second. Owe

:04:42. > :04:46.splits the Ferraris, but Alonso is in front. Sebastian Vettel, well,

:04:46. > :04:51.he could be the one to watch. Here comes Vettel out of the final

:04:51. > :04:53.corner. Vettel goes faster by by three tenths of a second. Sebastian

:04:53. > :04:59.Vettel showing the form he did if practise this morning.

:04:59. > :05:05.Well, an impressive lap, but an impressive prediction from Gary

:05:05. > :05:09.Anderson did he not not say a 37.3. We have five minutes to go. We

:05:09. > :05:15.might see that being improved. I guess, well, there is a surprise, a

:05:15. > :05:18.lock up in the McLaren. This time we have the one McLaren in the top

:05:18. > :05:21.ten and it is Lewis Hamilton, but Vettel has the advantage here from

:05:21. > :05:27.Alonso the two championship contenders one and two. Webber is

:05:27. > :05:30.third. Massa fourth. Hamilton fifth and the two Lotuses of Kimi

:05:30. > :05:33.Raikkonen and Grosjean running different specifications on the

:05:33. > :05:38.cars and Michael Schumacher and Rosberg who have not done a lap

:05:38. > :05:42.time as yet and you are watching inside the McLaren pit and the

:05:42. > :05:47.Mercedes pit, sorry. You had the curious leaving of the

:05:47. > :05:51.pit lane. Are they just registering a time and seeing what else is

:05:51. > :05:55.going on? Are they going to go and take a shot at it here? They have

:05:56. > :06:02.been out and come back in. So the order is based on your race number

:06:02. > :06:09.in fact. So Michael Schumacher has the advantage over Nico Rosberg.

:06:09. > :06:14.TEAM RADIO: We need a little bit in sector two, but it is a very tidy

:06:14. > :06:20.lap. They are always pushing for more.

:06:20. > :06:25.He wants to be purple in all sectors. There is his engineer

:06:25. > :06:30.there, Rocky as he is known. The Frenchman gives that information to

:06:30. > :06:35.the young German in the Austrian team based in Britain. A truly

:06:35. > :06:39.international nature of Formula One. It is a real mix, isn't it? The

:06:39. > :06:44.engineer for for Fernando Alonso there. They have managed to get

:06:44. > :06:50.themselves into second place ahead of the other Red Bull. Red Bull

:06:50. > :06:55.locked out of the front row in Japan. Webber at a a disadvantage

:06:55. > :07:00.today because he didn't get to run the super soft tyres m morning.

:07:00. > :07:05.Gary, we could still see improvements on the next run?

:07:05. > :07:10.wouldn't surprise me. Sebastian Vettel is in an inevitable position.

:07:10. > :07:14.He has three tenths on Fernando Alonso. He can push the limits.

:07:14. > :07:18.Will he use the tyres because this race is going to be won by strategy

:07:18. > :07:21.and these tyres are strange. The super softs grain. You have got to

:07:21. > :07:25.get through that spell, but they are quicker and they are quicker on

:07:25. > :07:30.the race run as well. He did a stable race run yesterday. So he

:07:30. > :07:34.may use strategy and not bother doing the complete run.

:07:34. > :07:39.Right. Nico Hulkenberg is coming out so maybe he will do a lap, but

:07:39. > :07:42.a real attempt at a lap and there is a new set of tyres for Romain

:07:42. > :07:46.Grosjean as well. Not too much difference between the two Lotus

:07:46. > :07:50.team-mates. They are sixth and seventh currently, but Kimi

:07:50. > :07:54.Raikkonen having the new exhaust set up on his car. Grosjean has the

:07:55. > :07:58.older speck. A new set of tyres for Sebastian Vettel. He has the

:07:58. > :08:01.advantage in qualifying. Just untwo-and-a-half minutes to go.

:08:01. > :08:05.Fernando Alonso has come out of his pits already and he is on track.

:08:05. > :08:11.Sebastian Vettel leaves the pit garage and let's look at how busy

:08:11. > :08:15.it was a moment ago as Hamilton in particular there, getting past the

:08:15. > :08:20.Mercedes. Well, he is entitled to do so. He

:08:20. > :08:27.felt that the Mercedes was being cheeky and he thought, "I will have

:08:28. > :08:34.some of that." As long as you are not enDear dangering anyone --

:08:34. > :08:40.endangering anyone in the pit pit area. It didn't look like there was

:08:40. > :08:45.anyone he could run-down. Singapore went well for them and

:08:45. > :08:50.Japan wasn't so good. They will be pleased particularly when when

:08:50. > :08:55.McLaren only managed to get one of their cars in the top ten. Jenson

:08:55. > :08:58.Button qualified in 11th. Everybody finds themselves within a sector

:08:58. > :09:01.which lasts 40 seconds on this racetrack and the last man who will

:09:01. > :09:05.cross the line will be Romain Grosjean, second last man will be

:09:06. > :09:10.Sebastian Vettel. So Vettel in the prime position to be able to back

:09:10. > :09:15.out and save some of that option tyre should no one be improving on

:09:15. > :09:25.his time and meanwhile, we are going to see Nico Hulkenberg has

:09:25. > :09:34.just just crossing the line and Mark Webber. He has gone at 1.37.

:09:34. > :09:39.They have not given on these tyres on this track track. He is using

:09:39. > :09:46.experience and he is make making the rest up.

:09:46. > :09:50.There is a lot of sitting and waiting doing 200mph. He will flap

:09:50. > :09:54.open as he comes up on to the next straight. Out of turn three,

:09:54. > :10:01.approaching turn four. Another heavy braking area, but now we get

:10:01. > :10:07.into the combination stuff. Low speed corners here. Looking tidy.

:10:07. > :10:12.Doesn't run too deep into the corner. A personal best so far for

:10:12. > :10:17.Mark Webber. He now gets into the fast flowing section of the middle

:10:17. > :10:23.part of the lap. How brave can you be with DRS?

:10:23. > :10:27.Flat out there. Down a gear or two. He is half a second up on his

:10:27. > :10:34.previous best. We can see that on the right of the display just below

:10:34. > :10:38.the flashing lights. A good lap from Mark Webber so far if he can

:10:38. > :10:43.hold this together. He has lost a little bit of time now. He is on

:10:43. > :10:52.the cusp of challenging Sebastian Vettel for pole position.

:10:52. > :10:58.The fastest first sector has gone to Rosberg. Keep an eye on Webber.

:10:58. > :11:04.Looking reasonable, but will it be enough to put him ahead of Vettel?

:11:04. > :11:09.Not only a front row start, but he has beaten his team-mate. Hamilton

:11:09. > :11:13.had a good lap. Hamilton is fastest in the middle sector. Hamilton

:11:13. > :11:18.crosses the line and he is third. He can't match the Red Bulls in the

:11:18. > :11:23.latter part of the lap and Rosberg goes eighth.

:11:23. > :11:29.Vettel had a bad first sector. It looks like Vettel is out of it for

:11:29. > :11:33.pole position. Alonso has been displaced by Lewis Hamilton. The

:11:33. > :11:37.championship leader is in fourth position. Across the line comes the

:11:37. > :11:41.Lotus. Here comes Vettel as well. Watch out for Vettel in president

:11:41. > :11:45.background and Massa in sixth and Vettel crosses the line and he

:11:45. > :11:53.hasn't been able to displace his team-mate with the final run.

:11:53. > :11:57.Grosjean goes seventh so he is outqualified by by his team-mate,

:11:57. > :12:02.but Mark Webber has taken pole. He had pole at Monaco, but it was a

:12:02. > :12:09.pole he inherited. He has taken pole position in a true battle with

:12:09. > :12:13.team-mate, Sebastian Vettel and he took it by 74,000 thsz of a second

:12:14. > :12:21.-- 74,000ths of a second. He has taken Renault's first ever

:12:21. > :12:26.owl position. -- first ever pole position. How

:12:26. > :12:30.many times have we seen that from Mark Webber? When he looks under

:12:30. > :12:35.pressure, he can deliver U That was a brilliant performance by

:12:35. > :12:41.Mark Webber. I wonder what story Vettel has to tell? You noticed he

:12:41. > :12:50.lost time on one of the sectors. I wonder if if that was a mistake or

:12:50. > :12:56.if something went wrong. It is a Red Bulloch out in Korea.

:12:56. > :13:00.TEAM RADIO: That's it Mark, P1. Pole position, fantastic job.

:13:00. > :13:06.you. A fairly restrained response from

:13:06. > :13:09.Mark Webber, but it is Red Bulls upfront.

:13:09. > :13:13.Alonso in terms of chasing the championship, he will be pleased

:13:13. > :13:16.that Vettel got beaten to the top spot. But there were no points in

:13:16. > :13:21.qualifying, it all matters in the race. Nico Hulkenberg has ended up

:13:21. > :13:29.eighth ahead of the Mercedes so they did all run at the end and

:13:29. > :13:34.Nico Hulkenberg eighth. Rosberg outqualified Michael Schumacher. An

:13:34. > :13:39.interesting top ten, Hamilton brings the car in third. Third

:13:39. > :13:43.place on the grid for Lewis Hamilton. The other one down in

:13:43. > :13:50.11th place for Jenson Button. Mark Webber can celebrate. It is the

:13:50. > :13:54.sixth Red Bull of 2012. It is his 11th career pole as well and this

:13:54. > :13:59.one, very fully deserved considering the problems he had in

:13:59. > :14:03.morning practise. Mark Webber has not won a Grand Prix when he hasn't

:14:03. > :14:08.started on the front row. He laid down a positive marker for the week

:14:08. > :14:13.ahead. Lewis Hamilton takes a good, close look at the tyres on the Red

:14:13. > :14:18.Bull. That tells its own story. Yeah, the body language, he is

:14:18. > :14:25.looking at every aspect of the Red Bull, particularly the tyres, but

:14:26. > :14:30.he is really studying it! I think that Alonso won't be too

:14:30. > :14:35.disappointed with that qualifying. He is only three tenths slower by

:14:35. > :14:39.pole man, Mark Webber. And that does show an improvement in overall

:14:39. > :14:47.performance from the Ferrari. That's a good effort, indeed.

:14:47. > :14:51.Coming up to the weighbridge, Kimi Raikkonen. Fifth fastest, Kimi

:14:51. > :14:55.Raikkonen. He is still on the pace, less than a tenth slower than

:14:55. > :15:01.Alonso. Mark Webber on pole position by a fraction from team-

:15:01. > :15:07.mate, Sebastian Vettel. Lewis Hamilton third. Alonso fourth. Kimi

:15:07. > :15:17.Raikkonen fifth and Felipe Massa in sixth.

:16:39. > :16:46.exactly what he said, he was asking about Felipe Massa? He had pole

:16:46. > :16:53.position all locked up. You can see by his position, he is bemused. It

:16:53. > :16:59.is not bad. He has a team-mate. Mark Webber knows the game. He is a

:16:59. > :17:04.wily old fox as he described himself. He is a team player. It is

:17:04. > :17:09.a very good decision for Red Bull. As they walk out to get their

:17:09. > :17:14.photos in the obligatory press call, Lewis is looking pretty happy to be

:17:14. > :17:24.mixing it with the Red Bulls. How will mark be feeling, beating his

:17:24. > :17:30.team-mate? Mark has been brushed by Sebastian. This is very good news,

:17:30. > :17:35.relief for him. He has signed the next season with his team. He wants

:17:35. > :17:39.to be a big player. This is endorsing what he thinks. He thinks

:17:39. > :17:47.he can win. Look at the statistics, Mark Webber is tough to beat when

:17:47. > :17:57.he starts at the front. Let us find out what the team principal thinks.

:18:12. > :18:19.He a really good lap together, great pole for him. You had longer

:18:19. > :18:23.runs yesterday on the soft tyres. Both drivers were reasonably happy

:18:23. > :18:29.with the long runs. We need to make sure we get through the first

:18:29. > :18:34.couple of corners this weekend. Make sure we convert great

:18:35. > :18:39.qualifying into a great result. Fernando was three-tenths slower,

:18:39. > :18:43.was that better than you expected from the Ferrari? He he is still

:18:43. > :18:48.right there, nothing can be discounted. All the major

:18:48. > :18:54.contenders are pretty much up there. It will be a fascinating race.

:18:54. > :18:58.luck tomorrow. Two important points, we have got to get through the

:18:59. > :19:04.first couple of corners OK, a veiled threat to his drivers not to

:19:04. > :19:10.run into each other. The team boss, he has become an expert. He knows

:19:10. > :19:15.what is going on. He will sit down with his drivers and say, listen,

:19:15. > :19:25.there's a lot of sponsors, people in the factory, keep banking them

:19:25. > :19:27.

:19:27. > :19:32.and do not undo all of that. -- thanking. He also mentioned race

:19:32. > :19:38.pace which will be ominous for the other teams. Often they are not as

:19:38. > :19:43.good in the race as qualifying. They have upped their game.

:19:43. > :19:47.Traditionally, they do not bring new parts. They feel this

:19:47. > :19:52.Championship is so finely poised they have to do something. They

:19:52. > :19:58.have responded brilliantly. A very strong performance by Red Bull.

:19:58. > :20:04.Lewis Hamilton also impressing today. Mixed for McLaren. Lewis

:20:04. > :20:14.will start bird. Martin Whitmarsh is with Gary Anderson.

:20:14. > :20:15.

:20:15. > :20:22.Lewis got into third. An excellent lap, we didn't think he would put

:20:22. > :20:29.that in. We have had some good long run pace this weekend. Starting on

:20:29. > :20:33.the second row, you are in with a decent shout in the race. Sebastian,

:20:33. > :20:40.Lois, Fernando, all queued up behind Mark, will make it quite

:20:40. > :20:44.exciting I am sure. Jenson is back, gives him an opportunity to try a

:20:44. > :20:51.different tyre strategy. We tried to look on the positive side.

:20:51. > :20:57.Unlucky. The yellow flag. That is the pressure in qualifying, you

:20:57. > :21:07.have to get it right every lap, in case there is a red or yellow flag.

:21:07. > :21:13.

:21:13. > :21:20.He didn't go through by four 1,000ths of a second. He has a new

:21:20. > :21:25.option, and a new primes. We all tried to do something different.

:21:25. > :21:30.Good luck tomorrow. Martin alluded to teams which are

:21:30. > :21:36.better in the race than qualifying, am I right in thinking they will

:21:36. > :21:41.secretly be happy to be two-tenths behind the Red Bull? For them, it

:21:41. > :21:45.is the wrong driver, they are losing Lewis at the end of the air.

:21:46. > :21:51.He is still in the Championship hunt for them. They are thinking in

:21:51. > :21:54.the future, drivers and engineers think didn't leave. The owners and

:21:55. > :22:00.the people who are structuring the team are thinking about the

:22:00. > :22:05.longevity, the future, which is Jenson Button and Perez. What will

:22:05. > :22:09.happen, different to what he is saying to us, he is thinking, we

:22:09. > :22:15.really need to start the team- building from here. I'm so pleased

:22:15. > :22:20.that was a qualified session were getting up for, for you. A

:22:20. > :22:28.worthwhile one. It is tight at the top and Ferrari are in the mix as

:22:28. > :22:36.well, let us hear from the boss. You must be pretty pleased? We are

:22:36. > :22:44.never pleased because we would like it to be better. It is important,

:22:44. > :22:53.if you remember, in a Singapore and Suzuka, it is another step in the

:22:53. > :22:59.right direction. That is the situation. It is important to do

:22:59. > :23:05.well tomorrow. And on the super soft thyme a Grier today, that was

:23:05. > :23:09.a consistent run from Fernando. Yesterday, on Friday the race pace

:23:09. > :23:15.was not bad. Let us hope to have a clean start with no problem. Good

:23:15. > :23:21.luck. What about the men driving the

:23:21. > :23:26.cars? Let's hear from the top four. Congratulations, a hard fought pole

:23:26. > :23:33.position. Her first official pole position of the year. It was a

:23:33. > :23:39.tight session. Yes. With the session unfolding, people were

:23:39. > :23:46.having different balance issues, on different compounds, on the same

:23:46. > :23:51.compound within different qualifying sessions. I was happy to

:23:51. > :23:59.recover in the first Qthree-run. you look at qualifying, the first

:23:59. > :24:03.and second was good, Q3, we lost a little bit. I probably started to

:24:03. > :24:10.do something in sector two which wasn't going in the right direction

:24:10. > :24:15.and I lost a little bit. Not entirely happy with the final lap.

:24:15. > :24:19.I feel great, really happy that I finally got a in-lap. Qualifying

:24:19. > :24:25.wasn't going as smoothly as it has in previous times. The last race

:24:25. > :24:35.was pretty disappointing for us. We have to make sure we get as high up

:24:35. > :24:40.

:24:40. > :24:50.as possible. Q1 and Q2, were problems. First in Q1, first in Q2.

:24:50. > :24:51.

:24:51. > :24:58.A strong car for them. But, we have a team. There is a start, a

:24:58. > :25:05.strategy, time management, and on that we are the strongest. Looking

:25:05. > :25:15.to get away from the first corner pretty well. That is important. Two

:25:15. > :25:19.

:25:19. > :25:27.Let us show you who was on pole position, Mark Webber, head of

:25:27. > :25:33.Sebastian Vettel. Loads of title pretenders at the front of the grid.

:25:33. > :25:38.A strong qualifying showing from Nico Hulkenberg. Just behind them,

:25:38. > :25:48.Jenson Button had a struggle today, and Kamui Kobayashi and Paul di

:25:48. > :25:58.

:25:58. > :26:02.Resta he did not make it to the The H R Ts are bringing up the rear.

:26:02. > :26:07.We have been speaking about this being one of the final races of the

:26:07. > :26:11.year. There is a real electricity in the year, the Cabinet battle is

:26:11. > :26:17.starting here. They were fighting in the pit lane, this is indicative

:26:17. > :26:24.how desperate they were to get out on track, that was Hamilton.

:26:24. > :26:31.talked about it early. Fighting on the pit lane. The Championship has

:26:31. > :26:36.become so juicy, everything to play for, the front two positions, it is

:26:36. > :26:41.electric. This is going to be a titanic battle for tomorrow and for

:26:41. > :26:45.the remainder of the season. titanic effort from Jenson Button

:26:45. > :26:49.if he can do something special from 11th place.

:26:49. > :26:55.Was there a problem out there, was it the end of flak? What you put it

:26:55. > :27:00.down to? The reason my first run wasn't quick in Q2, I locked up,

:27:01. > :27:06.the front left. I had to go down to first gear, it cost me time. I

:27:06. > :27:14.wasn't worried because I thought the next run, an easy time to find,

:27:14. > :27:24.but a yellow flag. Telling us he locked up. One man who nailed the

:27:24. > :27:28.

:27:28. > :27:35.leper macro, -- lap, Mark Webber. Listen to that high-speed section,

:27:35. > :27:40.that is when a Grand Prix car feels alive. That middle sector was about

:27:40. > :27:45.high-speed stuff. He is not short of bravery. He kept it together. No

:27:45. > :27:50.big fighting there will at this stage. Look at the remaining

:27:50. > :27:55.corners as they unfold, but how close he was on the left-hand side.

:27:55. > :28:03.A little lock up in 16, he gets a bit wide, early on the throttle as

:28:03. > :28:09.he filters through 17. DRS open early, across the line. A rather

:28:09. > :28:13.tidy lap. A tidy race would suit Red Bull

:28:14. > :28:19.find tomorrow. Set your alarm for 6am tomorrow morning. If you can't
