:01:18. > :01:23.You know what, David, the rain may be coming down but this is still

:01:23. > :01:29.the Monaco Grand Prix, it is still the harbour, we have had some fun.

:01:29. > :01:33.If you think of any cliche had to open a show, we have done it all,

:01:33. > :01:40.helicopters, fast cars. We have stood very close to each other in a

:01:40. > :01:43.lift. Why do we have to stand so close? But I think this year we do

:01:43. > :01:47.not need anything special to open the show, the racing can talk for

:01:47. > :01:52.itself. Unquestionably. Five races and five different winners and

:01:52. > :01:55.looking like a sixth winner. That has never been done before. Lewis

:01:55. > :02:03.Hamilton has not won arrays this year. Remarkable when you consider

:02:03. > :02:07.he has been on great form. What about Mark Webber? He has got a

:02:07. > :02:12.point to prove. And let's not forget the most experienced and

:02:12. > :02:17.winning driver, Michael Schumacher. Is this the weekend when he will

:02:17. > :02:21.rediscover his form? Personally, I think look at Kimi Raikkonen. He

:02:21. > :02:26.has come back and done what Michael has not done. For those were new to

:02:26. > :02:30.Formula One, they have probably not heard of Romain Grosjean. He is

:02:30. > :02:36.Kimi Raikkonen's team mate. I think we could have a French winner in

:02:36. > :02:42.the Grand Prix. At we really do not need any gimmicks to get us going

:02:42. > :02:52.this year. Hold on. Guys, are we doing this opening feature or not?

:02:52. > :02:54.

:02:54. > :02:58.Sorry, we had a change of plan. Didn't you get the email?!

:02:58. > :03:02.I think you would call that lost in translation. He eventually walked

:03:02. > :03:06.round the entire track to get back to his hotel room and you are a

:03:06. > :03:11.good sport for doing that, Eddie. Good afternoon and welcome to what

:03:11. > :03:16.is one of the most important Saturdays in a Formula One driver's

:03:16. > :03:20.diary, a qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix. I am with David

:03:20. > :03:29.Coulthard and Eddie Jordan. You were engaged when we were filming

:03:29. > :03:35.that he's. 6 DEFRA winners in the first six races, could it happen?

:03:35. > :03:39.Absolutely. I think it could happen. Lewis has seen all the dramas which

:03:39. > :03:45.have unfolded over the last couple of races. He is fresh, exciting and

:03:45. > :03:51.very motivated and I think he can win. There are lots of others as

:03:51. > :03:57.well. Eddie's flippers floating down on his lap yesterday but

:03:57. > :04:01.getting fast round here, it remains a dark arts for lots of the drivers.

:04:01. > :04:06.You managed to do it. What is the secret for having a good Saturday

:04:06. > :04:10.here? I think the secret is getting used to the car on low fuel

:04:10. > :04:16.situations. You have got to feel how nimble the car is, when you

:04:16. > :04:20.come over a rise, when you turn the car in. I thought we saw a number

:04:20. > :04:24.of drivers being caught out with the need to run the car on high

:04:24. > :04:29.fuel to understand the tyres. was a dramatic final practice

:04:29. > :04:34.session. We will show you all the build up as well. Our aim is to try

:04:34. > :04:39.and get from here in the paddock to the pit lane during our show.

:04:39. > :04:44.Usually very easy but it is not a case in Monaco. Monaco, we always

:04:44. > :04:47.say it is great for the fans but it is a shocker for the teams. They

:04:48. > :04:51.hate the place. We are going to have a look around here as we make

:04:52. > :04:57.our way to the pits because it is not an easy task. We have Sam

:04:57. > :05:01.looking at us over there and I think we should walk up. This is

:05:01. > :05:05.the harbour. To get from the harbour to where the cars are is a

:05:05. > :05:08.daunting experience. It we will be going along the harbour, over a

:05:08. > :05:13.bridge and hopefully through to the pit lane. This paddock has not

:05:13. > :05:18.always looked like this. Very different in your day. It was much

:05:18. > :05:23.closer and dare I say, I preferred it. These new garages are a new

:05:23. > :05:27.feature. What we had in the old days were warnings on the side of

:05:27. > :05:33.the trucks. They are now banned. Be used to have the cars under so that

:05:33. > :05:37.people could see them. How times have changed. One thing's - at one

:05:37. > :05:41.thing that has stayed the same, it is claustrophobic and difficult to

:05:41. > :05:51.work, but even harder to drive a Formula One car. Most people here

:05:51. > :06:19.

:06:19. > :06:24.are not working, they are just It is an amazing place and it

:06:24. > :06:28.attracts the stars as well. Here is Will Smith. What is it about this

:06:28. > :06:33.place, it is not be racing because there were only 16 overtakes last

:06:33. > :06:43.year. I think it is an amazing place. I think will Smith is here

:06:43. > :06:44.

:06:45. > :06:50.to promote his film down the road. Megastars and movie-makers is what

:06:50. > :06:56.sets it apart here. And for the drivers, to win here is very

:06:56. > :06:59.special. David Coulthard, happy tenth anniversary. It was in 2002

:06:59. > :07:03.when you pick up your win here. You told me that even before the season

:07:03. > :07:10.had started, you were planning for the Grand Prix. Yes, the last

:07:10. > :07:14.decade has been a blur! Where did it go? I used to set myself in the

:07:14. > :07:18.car to make sure I could see everything for Monaco. I did not

:07:18. > :07:22.understand why you would come here and change your seating position. I

:07:22. > :07:27.wanted to have my feeling 100 % in the Prix races before coming to

:07:27. > :07:30.Monte Carlo because this is the one I especially wanted to win. I do

:07:30. > :07:34.not think it was a coincidence that I was very good here and a bit

:07:34. > :07:39.average in other places. It is also a big challenge for the engineers

:07:39. > :07:43.because they have not had to design a car to cope on these kind streets

:07:43. > :07:53.this season. You can have a look at the races which have gone and those

:07:53. > :07:55.

:07:55. > :08:00.walk. We will make our way out to the harbour. David, you can lead

:08:00. > :08:04.the way. It is not easy moving around. We'll get one of these

:08:04. > :08:13.passes. I was looking at the pass belonging to someone else the other

:08:13. > :08:18.day who had won that you world champion. There is Niki Lauda. We

:08:18. > :08:22.will be hearing from him a late run this season because there is an

:08:22. > :08:26.amazing film on its way out and we will talk about that. What about

:08:26. > :08:30.this weekend? We are looking for the sixth different winner from the

:08:30. > :08:40.first six races and you know what, if it could just happen. Stranger

:08:40. > :08:40.

:08:40. > :08:45.things did a couple of weeks ago. Alonso goes wheel-to-wheel, the

:08:45. > :08:52.Lotus is behind. Alonso takes the lead into the first corner!

:08:52. > :08:57.Hamilton is having a little look on the inside. Hamilton overtakes.

:08:57. > :09:03.Force India goes wide 39 so this will be an easier path. You did a

:09:03. > :09:09.great job, mate. There has been a coming together between Schumacher

:09:09. > :09:14.and Senna. It looks Michael was caught out by how early Bruno was

:09:14. > :09:18.having to brake for turn one. again, what is going wrong for

:09:18. > :09:23.McLaren? They have not managed to get the wheel out of the way in

:09:23. > :09:27.time. Alonso has lost time in the pit stop as if Maldonado goes

:09:27. > :09:33.through. An early stop from the Williams team. It puts them in the

:09:33. > :09:40.lead and put him well into the lead. Kobayashi finds the inside line.

:09:40. > :09:43.Good reaction from Jenson otherwise that could have ended up in tears.

:09:43. > :09:47.Vettel is closing on the back, trying to go to the outside as they

:09:47. > :09:52.come in to turn one and sweeps round Jenson Button.

:09:52. > :09:59.He is going for it but can he make the move? He is late on the brakes.

:09:59. > :10:06.Button gets through. Pastor Maldonado wins in Spain! It is the

:10:06. > :10:13.first Williams directory -- victory since Brazil 2004.

:10:13. > :10:16.What a race. That was our fifth winner in the first five races. 125

:10:16. > :10:21.points have been on offer so far for the drivers, the most anyone

:10:21. > :10:25.has managed his 61. I think that is a reflection of the discovery the

:10:25. > :10:30.teams are going through and trying to understand the tyres. It has

:10:30. > :10:34.meant that no one is pulling away. Somebody asked me what has gone

:10:34. > :10:39.wrong for Red Bull? Not a lot has gone wrong but it is a remarkable

:10:39. > :10:42.start to the season. They are at the top with 109 points but it

:10:42. > :10:46.shows how high the benchmark has been set for them that people think

:10:46. > :10:50.they are struggling. They are leading a of the championships. The

:10:50. > :10:54.game they play in the harbour is my boat is bigger than yours. How big

:10:54. > :10:59.is yours? We are not going down that route. I'm sure there are a

:10:59. > :11:04.lot of egos that there. They will be off to another place like centre

:11:04. > :11:10.play or Capri perhaps. People like to -- seemed to like their cars and

:11:10. > :11:14.boats. The profile here is extreme beyond doubt. Just have a spin

:11:14. > :11:22.around you can see how busy it is around us. Everywhere you go there

:11:22. > :11:26.are fans as far as the eye can see. A remarkable place. We know Pastor

:11:26. > :11:36.Maldonado was the headline maker a couple of weeks ago. Here is this

:11:36. > :11:37.

:11:37. > :11:41.Monica holds a special place in Formula One and winning around

:11:41. > :11:46.these iconic streets is the mark of a great driver. This year we have

:11:46. > :11:51.seven Monaco winners on the grid. One former Monaco winner who is yet

:11:51. > :11:56.to win this season is Lewis Hamilton and he loved this place.

:11:56. > :12:00.It is a roller-coaster. A hard core roller coaster. No other roller

:12:00. > :12:05.coasters in the world come close to it. It is insane. Driving in

:12:05. > :12:09.between barriers in the street, people are that close. It is bumpy.

:12:09. > :12:14.It is about finesse and control. If anyone is imagining what it will be

:12:14. > :12:19.light, don't even waste your time because you cannot imagine it.

:12:19. > :12:24.year's Monaco when and double world champion Sebastian Vettel says this

:12:24. > :12:28.season of Formula One has not gone as he or Red Bull had hoped. So far,

:12:28. > :12:36.we have had a rough time but nevertheless I think it is

:12:36. > :12:41.important to be consistent. We will see how we get on this weekend.

:12:41. > :12:44.Mark Webber, another Monaco winner has out-qualified his team-mate

:12:44. > :12:50.Sebastian Vettel this season and he says qualifying here can shake your

:12:50. > :12:55.whole weekend. A bit comes with momentum. You cannot arrive in Q3

:12:55. > :13:02.little bit lost with the rhythm. You have to have good rhythm and

:13:02. > :13:06.tempo. Last year's Sergio Perez had a huge crash in qualifying which

:13:06. > :13:10.kept him in hospital for several days. It means that despite being

:13:10. > :13:17.in the second season of Formula One, this will be his first ever Monaco

:13:17. > :13:23.Grand Prix. I am really looking forward to fighting for podium and

:13:23. > :13:28.who knows, it might be my first win here? In light of that crash and

:13:28. > :13:33.plenty of others over the years, the track has been changed. The

:13:33. > :13:38.barrier has been moved back by 14 metres.

:13:38. > :13:42.And finally, Mercedes have said they are keeping an eye in pole di

:13:42. > :13:46.Resta or to see how his Formula One Korea develops over this season.

:13:46. > :13:51.is very flattering that they are thinking and keeping their eye on

:13:51. > :13:55.me at the moment. It is no secret that I want to be in a world

:13:55. > :14:00.champion winning team car. It has always been a dream.

:14:00. > :14:05.We have made our way down to the harbour's edge. There is David's

:14:05. > :14:08.boat. We saw Sergio Perez's crash there. It is amazing to think it

:14:09. > :14:14.has been a year since then. He will take some confidence into this

:14:14. > :14:18.weekend? Sauber have had a great car. Arguably, I'm slightly

:14:18. > :14:22.critical because I think he should have won and beaten Alonso in that

:14:22. > :14:26.race but he did not but he can certainly do it here. He has that

:14:26. > :14:30.feel about the place and he has that in a confidence now. We just

:14:30. > :14:36.have to stop here and take a look at how close we are to the track.

:14:36. > :14:40.David, this is the magic of Monaco. It is fantastic. I come down here

:14:40. > :14:45.every time when I am not racing and watch the cars round here. You can

:14:45. > :14:53.smell the exhaust fumes and that is what makes Monte Carlo special, how

:14:53. > :14:59.close you can get. Michael has had some success over the years. 2001

:14:59. > :15:05.was the last time he won around here. He had a tricky race last

:15:05. > :15:11.time. He crashed into Bruno Senna. He has the distinction of having

:15:11. > :15:21.crashed into Ayrton Senna and his nephew, Bruno. We took a look at

:15:21. > :15:26.

:15:26. > :15:30.some fitted before final qualifying DAVID COULTHARD: We can see Michael

:15:30. > :15:34.coming down to turn 10. Lewis turned into the corner absolutely

:15:34. > :15:40.normally. Michael at this point, struggling to keep up with Lewis as

:15:40. > :15:45.they come out of turn 12. Then what he chooses to do is to go down the

:15:45. > :15:49.old Grand Prix circuit, missing out the last section, which was added a

:15:50. > :15:53.couple of years ago, then gives him a wave and holds him up. That angle

:15:53. > :15:57.does not show how close it was to actually having Lewis crashing to

:15:57. > :16:02.the back of him. That sort of behaviour is unacceptable. Michael

:16:02. > :16:05.is a great champion, all that sort of thing, but that was a

:16:05. > :16:11.premeditated move to get his own back for something which he felt

:16:11. > :16:14.Lewis had done against him. You cannot just do that. That is

:16:14. > :16:20.disgraceful, as you rightly say. He is taking the law into his own

:16:20. > :16:24.hands. There is a mechanism to sort this out. You go to the stewards,

:16:24. > :16:28.you say what happened. He just seems to interpret the rules as he

:16:28. > :16:33.feels. I'm sorry, they are not made for him, they are made for

:16:33. > :16:38.everybody. Michael's supporters will think, why are we picking on

:16:38. > :16:43.him? But it is the same in football, you do not just kick the guy who

:16:43. > :16:49.has just kicked you, you wait for the referee to make the judgment.

:16:49. > :16:54.Pastor Maldonado now, a man who comes here as a race winner, with

:16:54. > :17:00.Williams back at the front. Rise and fall of the private here,

:17:01. > :17:05.the dogged determination of two men, who transformed a small British

:17:05. > :17:14.team into a small British team that beat the world. Nine constructor

:17:14. > :17:18.titles, seven drivers' titles. Williams became one of the most

:17:18. > :17:22.successful teams in the history of Formula 1. But eventually,

:17:22. > :17:27.celebration was replaced by frustration, as the team fell by

:17:27. > :17:34.the wayside. Last year, they got just five points, their worst

:17:34. > :17:39.season ever. Success, so hard to capture, harder even to recapture.

:17:39. > :17:49.Renault engines are back - are Williams? Have they finally turned

:17:49. > :17:52.

:17:52. > :17:58.a corner? Can the underdog rise COMMENTATOR: Thanks to Pastor

:17:58. > :18:04.Maldonado, that is a huge story. Pastor Maldonado, starting on pole

:18:04. > :18:10.position for Williams Renault. are now in pole position. We have a

:18:10. > :18:15.good chance to win, and we have never had that kind of chance. I

:18:15. > :18:21.did my best, just to win. Welcome to Catalunya, with Pastor Maldonado

:18:21. > :18:28.on the front of the grid... I am looking forward to doing everything

:18:28. > :18:34.good. Pastor Maldonado, I wonder how he feels, taking his first ever

:18:34. > :18:38.pole position. After that, I was only thinking about the victory.

:18:38. > :18:44.COMMENTATOR: Away we go. Pastor Maldonado has got a really good

:18:44. > :18:50.start! Fernando had a better start than us, we lost the position. At

:18:50. > :18:59.the moment, I thought, the race is going to be long, our pace is the

:18:59. > :19:06.best, just wait for the moment. We waited until the second pit stop.

:19:06. > :19:12.It is always a pleasure to race, and to fight with a class of guy

:19:12. > :19:17.like that. Fernando is very experienced. For sure, I enjoyed it.

:19:17. > :19:23.He is looking so good for his first ever victory! I was a bit worried,

:19:24. > :19:28.that's why I backed off a little bit just to keep the tyres alive.

:19:28. > :19:38.Then I started to push again, to make a gap, and it remained like

:19:38. > :19:39.

:19:39. > :19:44.that. Pastor Maldonado wins in Spain! That is an incredible drive.

:19:44. > :19:50.Nobody expected our victory. It was good news for everybody in the

:19:50. > :19:57.paddock. What a performance today. Truly world class. A lot of people

:19:57. > :20:01.were celebrating our victory, it is a Venezuelan victory, because they

:20:01. > :20:06.have pushed so hard to see me here, and I have paid them back with a

:20:06. > :20:16.victory. It is fantastic. Pastor Maldonado, there is nothing

:20:16. > :20:17.

:20:17. > :20:21.quite like best. After that victory, we have good motivation in the team.

:20:21. > :20:25.This is the walk that the drivers have been doing today - the only

:20:25. > :20:30.way to get in the pit lane from the harbourside. It is worth looking

:20:30. > :20:35.behind you at all of the fans on that hill up there. You can just

:20:35. > :20:42.make them out. It looks incredible. You just start to get the

:20:42. > :20:47.atmosphere here. This is real motor racing. Yes, it is something which

:20:47. > :20:51.makes Monaco unique. The drivers walk up here before qualifying.

:20:51. > :20:59.There is one chap from England, he has got a tannoy, he always shouts

:20:59. > :21:03.something. It makes this place completely special. The drivers

:21:03. > :21:08.make their walker fame, and you have got the grandstand there as

:21:08. > :21:15.well, the fans showing their appreciation. I can see the

:21:15. > :21:18.Scottish flag up there, clearly for Paul. We have just talk about

:21:19. > :21:21.Pastor Maldonado's victory from a couple of weeks ago, but then this

:21:21. > :21:26.couple of weeks ago, but then this happened during free practice today,

:21:26. > :21:31.what was this? I am really disappointed in this, and a bit

:21:32. > :21:36.angry. We had a similar incident with him in Zubar last year. Sergio

:21:36. > :21:46.Perez pulling over, Maldonado has been on a hot lap, and he has used

:21:46. > :21:54.his car as a weapon. Here we see the incident with Lewis Hamilton in

:21:54. > :22:02.Zubar, and he drove his car into Lewis, and drove Lewis off the

:22:02. > :22:06.circuit. He then crashes at Casino square. The red mist had come down

:22:06. > :22:10.and affected his judgment. When you consider just how good he was in

:22:10. > :22:12.Barcelona, this shows a fundamental flaw, where, when he feels

:22:12. > :22:17.aggrieved in some way, he starts aggrieved in some way, he starts

:22:17. > :22:22.using his car as a weapon. That is unacceptable and completely outside

:22:22. > :22:29.sporting behaviour. He is lucky to get away with just a 10 place grid

:22:29. > :22:32.penalty. That's if they can rebuild the car in time for him to go out

:22:32. > :22:40.and qualify. We can get the latest now from outside the Williams

:22:40. > :22:45.garage. They are working away... Yes, every man and his dog that

:22:45. > :22:50.Williams possess are here. He damaged all four wheels. The gear

:22:50. > :22:56.box looks as though it is OK. But it is going to be a struggle to get

:22:56. > :23:01.back out there. The car still has to go back down on the ground and

:23:01. > :23:06.get set up, which takes 15-20 minutes to do it properly. The last

:23:06. > :23:10.place you want to be with a car which is not set up correctly would

:23:10. > :23:15.be Monica. I think he will just about make it, for what I can see.

:23:15. > :23:18.Thank you very much, Gary. Not the way that Williams wanted to be

:23:18. > :23:23.starting the Monaco Grand Prix weekend. However, they do come here

:23:23. > :23:28.as race winners, something that a team with a similar budget to them,

:23:28. > :23:35.Force India, would love to be saying. Eddie is with Force India.

:23:35. > :23:40.Paul, a little accident, are you OK? Fine. Probably me just being a

:23:40. > :23:45.bit too greedy going into the chicane on the brakes. Fortunately

:23:45. > :23:51.it was only the front wing. None of the corners touched the barrier. We

:23:51. > :23:54.will go in, I need to build back up, but the first session of qualifying

:23:54. > :24:00.will be about trying to get a clear lap. We have been in reasonable

:24:00. > :24:06.form so far, so we will be hoping to continue that. It looks as if

:24:06. > :24:12.the back got away from you, what happened? There is a new surface

:24:12. > :24:16.here, it is better, but you're always trying to find their limits.

:24:16. > :24:21.People have always got caught out around here, and it has caught me

:24:21. > :24:31.out. You need to make sure you get it nailed for qualifying, because

:24:31. > :24:31.

:24:31. > :24:36.that will be the key. Williams, historic win last week, and indeed

:24:36. > :24:41.teams like Sauber doing better, is that frustrating you? It is not

:24:41. > :24:45.frustrating, Williams have done a good job, as have Sauber. We have

:24:45. > :24:49.got a job on our hands, but Williams did a great job in

:24:49. > :24:55.Barcelona. It made our life difficult, trying to catch them up

:24:55. > :25:02.in the Constructors' Title, but we will fight all the way. We wish you

:25:02. > :25:05.every success this weekend. Moving to the boys at the front, it

:25:05. > :25:09.is always worth having a look inside the garage of the current

:25:09. > :25:16.world champions, Red Bull. Once again, not showing incredible pace

:25:16. > :25:20.this weekend, David. You say that, Sebastien this morning was just a

:25:20. > :25:30.tenth away from the fastest. Clearly they have found a little

:25:30. > :25:34.bit of extra form. Incredible qualifying coming up. I think there

:25:34. > :25:38.is five guys who genuinely have a chance. Niki Lauda certainly knows

:25:38. > :25:43.what it takes to be successful in Formula 1. We got a fleeting

:25:43. > :25:53.glimpse of him earlier on, but we are set to see a whole lot more of

:25:53. > :26:00.

:26:00. > :26:10.The COMMENTATOR: The World Championship decider, James Hunt in

:26:10. > :26:16.the McLaren and Niki Lauda in the Ferrari.

:26:16. > :26:21.This is a sport which is so dramatic. If you do not know this

:26:21. > :26:31.sport, you're in for a really cool a wakening. It is that combination

:26:31. > :26:51.

:26:51. > :26:55.The story is about a rivalry between the two guys. One guy who

:26:55. > :27:05.led a dangerous life, and the other guy was much more meticulous, much

:27:05. > :27:06.

:27:06. > :27:13.more involved with the mechanics. These are really unique,

:27:13. > :27:18.fascinating, entertaining guys. James is an Baathist, if you will.

:27:18. > :27:22.It is a much more passionate approach, fuelled from the gut,

:27:22. > :27:32.kind of head down and go for it. is about friendship, rivalry,

:27:32. > :27:37.

:27:37. > :27:46.overcoming fear. There is an inspirational aspect to our story,

:27:46. > :27:52.which is making out a's incredible comeback from that crash. -- Niki

:27:52. > :27:56.Lauda's incredible comeback. One of the most fascinating aspects of my

:27:56. > :28:01.part is how he could have that incredible comeback just four weeks

:28:01. > :28:06.after that terrible accident, and to be fourth in Monza or in the

:28:06. > :28:09.first race back. The big challenge is trying to recreate, on a

:28:09. > :28:15.reasonable budget, the global nature of the sport, and the

:28:15. > :28:25.intensity of it. Everything that we wanted to film we have done as

:28:25. > :28:29.realistic as possible. We make it look as real as possible. The only

:28:29. > :28:39.way to do that is to get really close and have hair-raising moments,

:28:39. > :28:45.

:28:45. > :28:53.otherwise the audience will not The hardest thing with the filming

:28:53. > :28:56.is, you have got so many moving parts, you have got the cards --

:28:56. > :29:06.the cars, which are owned by individual collectors. Midges

:29:06. > :29:07.

:29:07. > :29:12.degree, it is a bit of a nightmare. -- logistically. I really want

:29:13. > :29:21.Formula 1 fans to feel respected, and to appreciate the movie. If I

:29:21. > :29:27.had one wish for it, that would be COMMENTATOR: James Hunt, holding

:29:27. > :29:37.the flag up for Britain, driving superbly! Niki Lauda says the

:29:37. > :29:38.

:29:38. > :29:44.conditions out there are too bad. And James Hunt is going to win the

:29:45. > :29:49.World Championship! I felt that I deserved to win the Championship. I

:29:49. > :29:55.also felt that Niki Lauda deserved to win the Championship, and I wish

:29:55. > :30:00.we could have shared it. What a remarkable quote. 36 years later,

:30:00. > :30:06.Formula 1 carries on. Some things never change in the sport. Eddie is

:30:06. > :30:09.with the man who helped produce the movie. You have produced some

:30:09. > :30:19.amazing movies already in your career - give us an idea of some of

:30:19. > :30:26.

:30:26. > :30:34.Dances with the Wolves Commerce sliding doors and some other very

:30:34. > :30:38.successful movies. Waded bizarre idea come from? We have been making

:30:38. > :30:41.a documentary about the whole history of Formula One and we

:30:41. > :30:45.became completely fascinated with the rivalry between James Hunt and

:30:45. > :30:50.Niki Lauda. Then we heard one Howard, an Oscar-winning director

:30:51. > :30:55.and Peter Morgan, and English rider had written a screenplay about the

:30:56. > :31:01.very thing. We got on to them and started working on the movie with

:31:01. > :31:06.them. We saw the clip and a lot of Ron was in the clip. Is he the key

:31:06. > :31:10.to the story because he can get out to people in a very successful way?

:31:10. > :31:14.Ron is a very, very talented director for this type of movie. He

:31:14. > :31:19.is accustomed to taking big, spectacular backgrounds and then

:31:19. > :31:22.making a very emotional movie in the middle. What we will see his

:31:22. > :31:26.the spectacular glamour and sexiness of Formula One and the

:31:26. > :31:30.danger and excitement, but in the middle of the story is a very

:31:30. > :31:34.moving story about two men who were totally different. James Hunt being

:31:34. > :31:38.a playboy, Niki Lauda being a very disciplined guide and how they both

:31:38. > :31:42.have the same ambition and both want to win the World Championship.

:31:42. > :31:47.It is about the arrival, respect and the dignity of their characters.

:31:47. > :31:53.Thank you for that insight. Lovely meeting you.

:31:53. > :31:58.Thank you both very much. The car making all the noise down here

:31:58. > :32:02.belongs to a certain Kimi Raikkonen. It is a remarkable of how much

:32:02. > :32:07.James Hunt resonates with the drivers that Jimmy is wearing a

:32:07. > :32:11.helmet that is effectively James Hunt's helmet. It is fantastic. It

:32:11. > :32:17.is not first time Kimi Raikkonen has done something like that. He

:32:17. > :32:22.entered a snowmobile race since we -- in Finland with the same number

:32:22. > :32:31.as James Hunt. Jean-Eric Vergne is wearing a Jean Alesi tribute helmet.

:32:31. > :32:36.A lot of drivers are shown in their respect for their heroes. Very

:32:36. > :32:42.quickly, they are still doing running repairs to these cars.

:32:42. > :32:48.Romain Grosjean is having his front wing done. That is what happened.

:32:48. > :32:52.Yes, he has been very quick in practice and banging over the kerbs.

:32:52. > :32:55.To stand down here and take a look at the Williams garage, you would

:32:55. > :32:58.not believe that a couple of weeks ago there was barely anything left.

:32:58. > :33:03.It is remarkable that that team have made it to this Grand Prix at

:33:03. > :33:07.all. Pastor Maldonado waves the

:33:07. > :33:11.Venezuelan flag with pride, his greatest F1 moment but a

:33:11. > :33:16.celebration that was cut short as a fire ripped through the Williams'

:33:16. > :33:20.garage minutes later, wiping out equipment and injuring personnel

:33:20. > :33:29.up-and-down the pit lane, making it a race against time to be ready for

:33:29. > :33:33.this weekend. Here we are. Hallelujah, Williams have a garage

:33:33. > :33:38.which looks to me to be pretty much fitted and ready for the weekend.

:33:38. > :33:42.Is that the case? It is nearly there. We have spent all week

:33:42. > :33:46.getting ready for this. We lost almost everything you could see in

:33:47. > :33:51.the garage. Where were you when you realise there was a problem? Just

:33:51. > :33:57.about there. We had just put Frank there. He was giving the team a

:33:57. > :34:01.talk of saying well done, before he left. Then over the top of the

:34:01. > :34:06.banners came the flames. The whole thing came from the fuel rig?

:34:06. > :34:11.fuel area. The way the garage was set up in Barcelona it would have

:34:11. > :34:16.been back in this area here. The flames and smoke just came straight

:34:16. > :34:21.over the top of the banners. Have you managed to ascertain exactly

:34:21. > :34:27.what went on? Yes, we have. We believe it was static electricity

:34:27. > :34:31.which set some fuel on fire. Where is your refuelling rig now? You

:34:31. > :34:35.have equipment which is worth tens of thousands of pounds and has been

:34:35. > :34:39.retested yet there was still a fire in the garage. Is there any further

:34:39. > :34:44.-- is there an issue with this equipment or procedure? No There is

:34:44. > :34:50.nothing wrong with the equipment. We have changed quite a few of the

:34:50. > :34:55.procedures. Tyres, where they and the damage --

:34:55. > :35:00.were they in the garage and were they damaged? No, but some of the

:35:00. > :35:06.tyre blankets. The starter motors were damaged. All of this is new.

:35:06. > :35:11.We lost 90 radios. Everything you see in this room we lost. There are

:35:11. > :35:14.bits borrowed from Lotus in there. Selling here is equipment from

:35:14. > :35:22.other Formula One teams who you might be fighting in the Grand Prix

:35:22. > :35:28.and they have helped you? Exactly. Lotus gave us some things on Monday.

:35:28. > :35:34.What is the latest you can give us about the guys who were injured?

:35:34. > :35:41.have won the still in hospital with burns. I spoke to him today. He is

:35:41. > :35:46.recovering but he will still have another ten days in hospital. We

:35:46. > :35:50.had medical people in to give every person in the team a lung check.

:35:50. > :35:56.You could only going there for literally five or six seconds. When

:35:56. > :36:01.you went in you could not see above your knees. A disown easy in

:36:01. > :36:05.Formula One to constantly be focusing on pole position, the race

:36:05. > :36:08.wins, that cash and glamour, maybe what happened last time is a nice

:36:08. > :36:12.gentle reminder that the most important thing in life and Formula

:36:12. > :36:17.One is the people and it could have been so much worse? Yes. The

:36:17. > :36:22.equipment you can beg, borrow and steal. People you cannot. That is

:36:22. > :36:25.the most important thing that the people are all right. Thank you for

:36:25. > :36:29.showing us around and congratulations for the hard work

:36:29. > :36:36.you have done. The hard work continues because you have a race

:36:36. > :36:42.to fight and I hear that Pastor Maldonado want the world title?

:36:42. > :36:46.nothing is ever easy! Nothing is ever easy. Eddie, you

:36:46. > :36:50.had a famous fire in a pit lane. How important is it as a team to

:36:51. > :36:57.make sure you learn from that? What did you do? You must never drop

:36:57. > :37:01.your guard, even by the my neatest scale. It always bounces back and

:37:01. > :37:05.bites you. Dickie was very honest. He said it looked like a finger

:37:05. > :37:11.problem in terms of operational reasons and whatever and that is

:37:11. > :37:14.usually what happens. The equipment is usually first class. Providing

:37:14. > :37:18.it has been properly maintained. Well done to Williams for getting

:37:18. > :37:24.here and the other teams for helping them out. It was nice to

:37:24. > :37:30.dip our noses in the pit lane. We have left DEC in there. Bruno Senna

:37:30. > :37:36.was not able to get the best out of the car but he is with David.

:37:36. > :37:39.Thanks, Jake. We have just seen the aftermath of Barcelona, incredible

:37:39. > :37:45.scenes there and a lot of difficulty for the team to get

:37:45. > :37:49.there as we heard from Dickie. De feel the team are ready? Yes. Their

:37:49. > :37:52.fire did not even seem to have happened when we went to the

:37:52. > :37:56.factory so everyone was pushing very hard to get everything we need

:37:56. > :38:01.for this race. Everybody came here with their chin up and really

:38:01. > :38:05.looking forward to this one. It was not the easiest of morning practice

:38:06. > :38:10.sessions. We saw your team-mate have an incident with Sergio Perez

:38:10. > :38:16.and ultimately crashed the car. Did you, in terms of your running have

:38:16. > :38:23.the chance to explore what he is going to do in qualifying? We put

:38:23. > :38:28.the super soft tyres very late. But unfortunately I got traffic and

:38:28. > :38:32.never really got a clean up. But this is Monaco, that is normal. It

:38:32. > :38:40.is important in qualifying to do whatever you can do to get a lap

:38:40. > :38:45.when you have the opportunity. I'm sure the car is competitive. Week

:38:45. > :38:49.it -- it is good enough for a top 10. It seems as if you have revised

:38:50. > :38:56.the projection of how good this car is. Secretly, are you hoping for

:38:56. > :39:01.more than that? You always do. But I do not think they were expecting

:39:01. > :39:04.front row in Barcelona and they got it. It is important to keep your

:39:04. > :39:09.feet on the ground and get the results as they come. We wish you

:39:09. > :39:13.well with that. Thank you. Yes, good luck to Bruno Senna. There

:39:13. > :39:18.have been a lot of questions asked about his future over the last few

:39:18. > :39:22.races. He is he doing enough? stands out for me is his behaviour

:39:22. > :39:27.and how he managed the Schumacher incident. I think he is very calm.

:39:27. > :39:32.He has risen his game. Of course, Maldonado is showing everybody up,

:39:32. > :39:36.not just his own team-mate. I think that Williams team smacks of real

:39:36. > :39:44.happiness and I think it can go on from here. This is much more your

:39:45. > :39:51.sort of place, a big part and sun lounge area. I think we are losing

:39:51. > :39:55.some sound. Yes, we are, it is clearly not going to work. It is

:39:56. > :39:59.hard to talk about qualifying and as David eluded two in the pit lane,

:39:59. > :40:04.it is so tight and close in regard to the timings, it is hard to call,

:40:04. > :40:10.isn't it? I think it is much more difficult in this particular moment.

:40:10. > :40:14.The bookies must be having a field day. Virtually any one of 10

:40:14. > :40:17.drivers could get pole position here. It is that tiny lap when you

:40:17. > :40:21.get the tyres right. You could say that is not really motor-racing but

:40:21. > :40:24.I believe it is. One man who knows exactly how to do that,

:40:24. > :40:32.particularly when it comes to getting the tyres in the right

:40:32. > :40:39.place at the right time is Jenson Button.

:40:39. > :40:42.COMMENTATOR: Jenson Button wins in Monaco. Monaco, baby!

:40:42. > :40:46.You have moved back to Monaco recently, a beautiful place to be

:40:46. > :40:55.living, I guess this feels like your first home Grand Prix of the

:40:55. > :40:59.season? Sort of. It is not a proper home Grand Prix. Most Formula One

:40:59. > :41:04.drivers love coming to Monaco. have had some real success over the

:41:04. > :41:13.years. You had a pole position and a wind doing your Brawn does. We

:41:13. > :41:17.thought we would look at a hot lap from 2011.

:41:17. > :41:25.Very bumpy across the start and finish line. It is tricky because

:41:25. > :41:33.you have got the barrier on the left. If you get that right you are

:41:33. > :41:40.OK. Here through Casino. It is such a buzz. There is not one corner

:41:40. > :41:46.here which gives you the lap time. You have to have a flail around the

:41:46. > :41:54.circuit. You have to brake late, carry the speed, run as wide as you

:41:54. > :42:02.can three Tabac on the exit. here is just amazing. It is, yes!

:42:02. > :42:06.You are taming the 750 horsepower beast. One small mistake, game over.

:42:06. > :42:10.Everything feels twice the speed around Monaco because the barriers

:42:10. > :42:13.are close. There are not many circuits where you watch quali laps

:42:13. > :42:17.and you think, wow, I have just done that. When you get a lap time

:42:17. > :42:22.out of it, it is such a nice feeling. In qualifying, how would

:42:22. > :42:26.you get that tight because it is perfect -- if it is perfectly on

:42:26. > :42:30.pole position but if not you have lost a couple of places. Had

:42:30. > :42:34.defined the margins? It is something you build up to,

:42:34. > :42:38.definitely. The more laps you do, the more in his own you get.

:42:38. > :42:44.Sometimes you get it wrong and sometimes it hurts. You still go

:42:44. > :42:49.out and give a 100 % and if it goes wrong, it goes wrong. Good luck out

:42:49. > :42:53.there. We will have our eyes on you in qualifying. If you do make a

:42:53. > :42:58.mistake, next time you go for a run or go and buy bread, you will walk

:42:58. > :43:05.past have been, that is where I made a mistake. I will see the tyre

:43:05. > :43:09.marks! No ties, no issues, have a great race. Cheers.

:43:09. > :43:14.The last pole position Jenson Button picked up was here in Monaco

:43:14. > :43:24.in 2009. We have seen some great celebrations in the Red Bull pool.

:43:24. > :43:24.

:43:24. > :43:28.The win means a lot to the driver's. Much more so this year. The tyres,

:43:28. > :43:34.it is so difficult to pass, they will all be going flat out. There

:43:34. > :43:44.are plenty of ways you can enjoy the action this afternoon. We are

:43:44. > :43:54.

:43:54. > :43:59.a fascinating, the pit lane feed it gives you just team radio and the

:43:59. > :44:03.shots of the cars from the pit lane. We also have the blogs and all the

:44:03. > :44:05.latest news. For the next seven days you can check out all of the

:44:05. > :44:10.action on the iPlayer. Plenty of people have spoken this weekend

:44:10. > :44:14.about Lewis Hamilton, I'm sure if he won he he Matt log-on to the

:44:14. > :44:19.iPlayer and checkout his victory but remarkably he has never had a

:44:19. > :44:24.pole position in Monaco? He has got that turn and speed. My money is on

:44:24. > :44:29.him today. And keep your eye out for shots when everyone went on to

:44:29. > :44:32.low fuel, we saw an accident for Paul di Resta and Pastor Maldonado.

:44:33. > :44:36.It is still a difficult circuit when you have driven here a lot.

:44:36. > :44:40.With every other circuit you can get away with little things, here

:44:40. > :44:46.you can get away with nothing. us one team name to look out for.

:44:46. > :44:50.There are so many, I am confused! I still believe that Hamilton can

:44:50. > :44:54.just about pull this one of. Stop the press, Eddie Jordan is

:44:55. > :45:04.confused! Now time for the first part of qualifying. He will make

:45:05. > :45:15.

:45:15. > :45:20.the cut and who will fall by the intense session of the entire

:45:20. > :45:24.season. And the Principality is looking resplendent in the sunshine.

:45:24. > :45:27.The first cars will be taking to the track in just a few moments.

:45:27. > :45:36.The Mediterranean provides the backdrop to the most famous Formula

:45:36. > :45:40.1 event of them all. This event has absolutely no rival. Two miles of

:45:40. > :45:45.tarmac at the foot of a cliff face, running through the town and along

:45:45. > :45:49.the harbour. It is narrow, it is bumpy, there are 20 miles of steel

:45:49. > :45:53.barrier and absolutely no room for error. Seven of the last eight

:45:53. > :46:00.races have been won from pole position, although you're two

:46:00. > :46:07.victories here, David, came from second and third on the grid.

:46:07. > :46:12.poor year that I had here, in 2001, that was fifth plays, that was when

:46:12. > :46:16.the engine switched itself off. But qualifying is absolutely vital.

:46:16. > :46:24.This season, three out of five races have been won from pole

:46:24. > :46:30.position. And around Monte Carlo, overtaking is as hard as it gets.

:46:30. > :46:37.In the Drivers' Championship, Sebastian Vettel and Fernando

:46:37. > :46:43.Alonso come here on 61 points. Pastor Maldonado, the winner of the

:46:43. > :46:47.last race, sits 9th in the Championship. Lewis Hamilton is

:46:47. > :46:52.second in the points, still looking for his first victory this season.

:46:52. > :46:58.Michael Schumacher, only two points for him, and for Felipe Massa. Both

:46:58. > :47:05.of those two, desperate to get some points this weekend. Michael of

:47:05. > :47:10.course, the most successful of all the drivers on this grid. Five

:47:10. > :47:16.victories at Monaco - not quite matching Ayrton Senna's record of

:47:16. > :47:21.six wins around the town. Red Bull reading the Constructors'

:47:21. > :47:31.Championship. Lotus have been the surprise of the season in many ways,

:47:31. > :47:33.

:47:33. > :47:37.ahead of Ferrari and Mercedes at the moment. The big target for

:47:37. > :47:42.those three teams at the bottom will be to try and get through the

:47:42. > :47:46.first part of qualifying today. Monaco always throws up lots of

:47:46. > :47:51.surprises. Pastor Maldonado, as we were saying earlier, has picked up

:47:51. > :47:56.a 10 place penalty for deliberately driving into Sergio Perez. It shows

:47:56. > :48:01.you how this place gets to people. DAVID COULTHARD: I am curious to

:48:01. > :48:05.know what the people at home think. I have got a bee in my bonnet about

:48:05. > :48:08.Pastor Maldonado using his car as a weapon. I think it is unacceptable

:48:08. > :48:12.sporting behaviour. I don't know if I am just getting a strange

:48:12. > :48:17.perspective on it because I used to drive these things, or whether

:48:17. > :48:22.people just think, he is showing emotion behind the wheel. But

:48:22. > :48:25.nonetheless, it is a 10 place grid penalty. He was absolutely

:48:25. > :48:30.fantastic around Barcelona, but he will struggle to repeat that this

:48:30. > :48:37.weekend, with that penalty. As well as that, Maldonado crashed this

:48:37. > :48:43.morning. Gary, are they ready to GARY ANDERSON: Yes, they are happy

:48:43. > :48:47.enough with what they have got. This is going to be the hard

:48:47. > :48:53.session, the traffic is going to be a nightmare, with 24 cars about

:48:53. > :48:58.there. BEN EDWARDS: How do the team's plan

:48:58. > :49:06.not to get caught up in the traffic? Well, everybody knows

:49:06. > :49:11.where all the other cars are. They come around the Swimming Pool area

:49:11. > :49:15.and then slow down. If it was me, I would have somebody leaning over

:49:15. > :49:21.the wall, watching for cars slowing down, because the traffic monitor

:49:21. > :49:25.does not tell you that. You need somebody out on the wall to tell

:49:25. > :49:30.the people back at the garage if somebody is slowing down.

:49:30. > :49:39.DAVID COULTHARD: that is a very good point, Gary. I have been able

:49:39. > :49:42.to see that the actual pit wall, in between the pit lane and the

:49:42. > :49:46.racetrack, here, they are above the garage is, actually looking out of

:49:46. > :49:50.the window, and they can see that very sector that you have been

:49:50. > :49:55.talking about. Yes, it is just making sure you can actually see

:49:55. > :50:05.the cars in front of you, and if they are going so low into Rascasse,

:50:05. > :50:06.

:50:06. > :50:14.because that is where you can trip over somebody very easily. Edwards

:50:14. > :50:16.label the Pirelli tyres being used, it is the first time we have seen

:50:16. > :50:24.the Pirelli super-soft being used this year, although it was used

:50:24. > :50:30.here 12 months ago. Presumably, most cars will be going out on the

:50:30. > :50:36.harder tyre at first. They will get an idea of how quickly they can go

:50:36. > :50:40.on that tyre, before making their decisions later on. It seems there

:50:40. > :50:47.is quite a split in performance between those tyres - no surprise

:50:47. > :50:54.there. It is anything between half a second and a second. But equally

:50:54. > :51:00.important is that they are getting multiple laps out of these tyres.

:51:00. > :51:05.It is important to get the driver's eye in. This is the most tricky

:51:05. > :51:11.part of qualifying in Monte Carlo, the point where all the cars are

:51:11. > :51:19.out there., including the usual suspects that we expect to drop at

:51:20. > :51:25.-- to drop out, like the likes of the HRTs. Yes, we will be losing

:51:25. > :51:30.seven cars in this first part of qualifying. In Spain, we lost Senna,

:51:30. > :51:33.and we lost Michael Schumacher in Bahrain. So, some of the front

:51:33. > :51:38.runners can sometimes, just through circumstance, end up getting

:51:38. > :51:42.knocked out in this first part of qualifying. So, it is crucial to

:51:42. > :51:46.try and get through this stage as cleanly as possible. Gary, I know

:51:46. > :51:54.that from where you are, you can see a little bit of the cars on the

:51:54. > :52:04.track, which makes a nice change for you, doesn't it? Yes, but the

:52:04. > :52:04.

:52:04. > :52:14.noise just does not go away here, it echoes of macro the buildings.

:52:14. > :52:15.

:52:15. > :52:20.The top cars have gone out on the prime tyre. I think they will be

:52:20. > :52:27.looking to try to do a 16.5 before they will feel comfortable of

:52:27. > :52:33.getting through. Looking out of the commentary box, we had a great view

:52:33. > :52:38.of the pit lane. We could see Sam Michael, of McLaren, who has

:52:38. > :52:42.obviously decided to take a walk down from the garage, to do exactly

:52:42. > :52:46.what Gary was suggesting - watch how the cars are performing on the

:52:46. > :52:52.track, coming out of that very tricky chicane. We saw Sebastian

:52:52. > :52:59.hit the barriers are there this morning. He got away with it. We

:52:59. > :53:03.have got a very slow HRT there. That's Pedro de la Rosa, and that

:53:03. > :53:07.is exactly what we were talking about. Yes, and unfortunately for

:53:07. > :53:12.Pedro de la Rosa, he will be getting called up by the stewards

:53:12. > :53:19.for that - you're not allowed to block cars on the racetrack. There

:53:19. > :53:24.is Kimi Raikkonen with his James Hunt tribute helmet. Already, cars

:53:24. > :53:28.backing up trying to get a clear run. Watch out for Romain Grosjean

:53:28. > :53:32.here today, the Frenchman has been very, very rapid in practice so far,

:53:32. > :53:37.looking very confident with the handling of the Lotus. He comes out

:53:37. > :53:41.of the chicane, towards the left hander at Tabac. The Frenchman

:53:41. > :53:47.Romain Grosjean, this is as close as he will get this year to a home

:53:48. > :53:56.race. None of the front runners have set a lap yet. It is Maldonado

:53:56. > :54:02.who has initially... Oh, he has backed off. He has, probably he has

:54:02. > :54:12.had the call that this man, Alonso, is going purple in the first two

:54:12. > :54:14.

:54:14. > :54:20.sectors. Let's see what his opening gambit is. A 17.1, that's 1.9

:54:20. > :54:24.seconds slower than he achieved this morning. Yes, straight out on

:54:24. > :54:30.the harder compound tyre there, Fernando Alonso. Those first times

:54:30. > :54:35.this morning were set on the super- soft. Now, Sergio Perez, the man

:54:35. > :54:40.who was hit by Maldonado. And he has hit the wall for the second

:54:40. > :54:45.year in succession, Sergio Perez! Not as bad this time, but he has

:54:45. > :54:53.hit the wall! A wheel comes off the car. This might be the first time

:54:53. > :54:58.ever that Sergio Perez has not made it out of the first qualifying

:54:58. > :55:04.session! DAVID COULTHARD: Yes, the red flag

:55:04. > :55:14.is out. He has got himself parked in a difficult area. I remember

:55:14. > :55:18.

:55:18. > :55:23.Michael Schumacher parking his Ferrari there.

:55:23. > :55:28.I don't think he will be able to get drive off there. It is slightly

:55:28. > :55:34.uphill. You can see the replay here, he gets a little bit wide, comes

:55:34. > :55:37.off the kerb, and he goes straight into the Armco. What he said in

:55:37. > :55:42.that radio message was that he had a problem with the front left tyre.

:55:42. > :55:48.If we look at the front left tyre, it is certainly flapping around. It

:55:48. > :55:54.looks like he lost the steering there. I wonder if the car was just

:55:54. > :55:59.rounding out on the plank there. These cars have a ride height of 20

:55:59. > :56:02.mm in the garage, but when they are running at speed, on one of the

:56:02. > :56:07.fastest corners of the track, it will just be skirting across the

:56:07. > :56:13.top of the tarmac. Whatever the reason, he is the first of the big

:56:13. > :56:18.drivers and teams to fall. Yes, he is going to be one of those not to

:56:18. > :56:25.make it through. One thing about Monaco is that they are usually

:56:25. > :56:31.pretty good at moving cars. GARY ANDERSON: Yes, they have got

:56:31. > :56:36.lots of cranes about. Just going back to Sergio Perez, that was the

:56:36. > :56:39.left front corner, and he had a coming together with Maldonado in

:56:39. > :56:49.an earlier session. I wonder if there was a little bit of damage

:56:49. > :56:50.

:56:50. > :57:00.which they had not picked up from that incident. It is possible.

:57:00. > :57:02.

:57:02. > :57:07.Alonso fastest at this moment, Jean-Eric Vergne, second-fastest.

:57:07. > :57:11.The red flag has stopped the clock in qualifying. It will restart once

:57:11. > :57:21.we get thisft out of the way. So, Sergio Perez, the first man to hit

:57:21. > :57:28.

:57:28. > :57:32.the wall hard this weekend. Sadly for Sergio Perez, he will be

:57:32. > :57:38.starting the Monaco Grand Prix from the very back. Let's just take

:57:38. > :57:43.another look, David. You get the image of the yachts on the left-

:57:43. > :57:45.hand side, absolutely committed through Tabac. He gets on the kerb.

:57:46. > :57:51.Yes, he definitely did not have the Yes, he definitely did not have the

:57:51. > :57:59.steering as he came off the chicane. That was much more than just an

:57:59. > :58:03.That was much more than just an error. As we see it again, it just

:58:03. > :58:09.looked like... Whether it locked out on the steering, they will find

:58:09. > :58:14.out when they analyse the data. Normally what you would try to do,

:58:14. > :58:23.when you think you're going to hit the Armco, is to hit it with both

:58:23. > :58:30.of your wheels, front and rear. But in that case, he went in with the

:58:30. > :58:34.in that case, he went in with the front left. We're just having a

:58:34. > :58:43.look, had he clipped the wall before that? See what we can make

:58:43. > :58:49.of this... There is a wobble. at the steering. He is turning, but

:58:49. > :58:54.the car is not turning, unless my eyes are playing tricks with me.

:58:54. > :58:58.The steering was turning, and the front left was not responding. As

:58:58. > :59:01.Gary was mentioning, whether that could be due to some accident

:59:01. > :59:11.damage from the coming together with Maldonado in free practice, we

:59:11. > :59:17.do not know at this stage. Meanwhile, the car will be brought

:59:17. > :59:21.back to the garage, and the Sauber team will be put to work. That is a

:59:21. > :59:25.shame, because he was looking good in free practice this morning.

:59:25. > :59:33.These are the times at the moment, but we can expect to see a lot of

:59:33. > :59:40.changes to those times. We are about two seconds away from what

:59:40. > :59:45.Lewis Hamilton did on his quick lap last year. Sebastian Vettel,

:59:45. > :59:49.waiting to come out. Pole position with a here last year. One race

:59:49. > :59:54.victory and one pole position to his name so far this year. That was

:59:54. > :59:58.in Bahrain, where it all came good for him. Second place in Australia.

:59:58. > :00:02.Consistency has meant that he is at the top of the Championship table,

:00:02. > :00:06.with Fernando Alonso. Sebastian Vettel has just had one race where

:00:06. > :00:11.he has failed to score, and that was in Malaysia, after a bit of

:00:12. > :00:21.contact with Karthikeyan. So, we will be restarting within a minute.

:00:22. > :00:26.

:00:26. > :00:34.Let's have another look at it, rotated. Keep an eye on the front,

:00:34. > :00:42.right corner. Look at the steering. It does not lock on. The lot goes

:00:42. > :00:50.on initially and then comes off. The front track rod, I think that

:00:50. > :00:54.has broken. It is subtle because it is a small amount of steering angle

:00:54. > :00:59.at speed. That is a car failure. After what happened to him last

:00:59. > :01:03.year, he suffered a huge accident, he suffered concussion. He had to

:01:03. > :01:08.miss this race and the Canadian Grand Prix. He has not shown any

:01:08. > :01:14.sign of that this week. He has been absolutely on it. He was the man

:01:14. > :01:19.who almost won in Malaysia. He is clearly not someone who has a lot

:01:19. > :01:24.of incidents and accidents. That one in Monaco was the only notable

:01:24. > :01:28.driver error that I can recall from his short career in Formula One.

:01:28. > :01:34.Now the cars are back out there. The same problem applies, you have

:01:34. > :01:39.got to get a clear lap in. On board with Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes.

:01:39. > :01:45.A pole winner himself in China when he went on to take victory. We did

:01:45. > :01:51.not get a fairly clear picture, bit of understeer, because not

:01:51. > :01:57.everybody got a run on the super soft tyre. But Rosberg could be in

:01:58. > :02:02.the challenge here. As the changes that through this gears into sixth

:02:02. > :02:08.gear, 170 miles an hour, on to the brakes, down to the chicane here.

:02:08. > :02:13.Just treading a little carefully on this out-lap. This is not his time

:02:13. > :02:17.lap. Next time round he will be starting his flying lap. He will be

:02:17. > :02:21.getting information from his engineers. He has nobody in front

:02:21. > :02:27.of him. Presuming nobody comes out of the pit lane then he can build

:02:27. > :02:30.this lap as he wants. That means getting as much heat in the brakes

:02:30. > :02:36.as possible, protecting the rear tyres and then unleashing the

:02:36. > :02:40.performance. He can get a double boost of KERS. He runs down into

:02:40. > :02:46.the first corner. Looking at the track a looks like he has an

:02:46. > :02:49.absolutely clear track for him to go and get his first flying lap.

:02:49. > :02:55.The lack you on could be the only clear lap you ever manage around

:02:55. > :03:01.Monte Carlo. You do not want to waste it. We see him position

:03:01. > :03:05.himself in the run-down to Mirabeau. This is a Loews Hairpin but they

:03:05. > :03:14.have changed the name to the fair Mont hairpin but it is synonymous

:03:14. > :03:20.to call it the Loews Hairpin. They use maximum walk at this racetrack.

:03:20. > :03:29.Flat out through the tunnel. Then over this very tricky rise. He had

:03:30. > :03:35.an accident there before but it was fixed. The best he has qualified in

:03:35. > :03:39.Monaco was fifth in 2007 when he was with Williams. This Q1 session

:03:39. > :03:44.is not about your ultimate position, it is about trying to get through

:03:44. > :03:54.to the second part of qualifying. This first 20 minutes session now

:03:54. > :03:55.

:03:55. > :03:58.down to 12.5 minutes to go is about survival. Across the line he goes.

:03:58. > :04:04.Fourth-fastest at the moment. I'm surprised, I thought it would have

:04:04. > :04:10.been more. Alonso's time from early on is still the quickest we have

:04:10. > :04:16.seen so far. Now watching Lewis Hamilton. Michael Schumacher has

:04:16. > :04:23.just gong quickest on a 1:16.4. Let's see how Lewis Hamilton

:04:23. > :04:27.applies himself to that challenge. He goes second fastest, 1:16.6.

:04:27. > :04:31.That is looking more like the pace. Gary, what are your thoughts? Will

:04:31. > :04:39.that be enough to get them through on the yellow tie rather than the

:04:39. > :04:44.super soft? It is going to be very close. If I was running the team,

:04:44. > :04:50.even if I put on a set of super soft, I would have to have a go at

:04:50. > :04:58.that time. Her Alonso has just done 16.6 so they are all about that

:04:58. > :05:05.limit. Maldonado has just gone second fastest on a 1:16.5 which

:05:05. > :05:15.might be enough to get through without putting the super soft

:05:15. > :05:17.

:05:17. > :05:25.decks macro -- super softs on. Rosberg goes fastest. An impressive

:05:25. > :05:30.lap there. He has been quicker than Michael through the various

:05:30. > :05:40.sessions, showing up half a second from his team-mate. It is Mercedes

:05:40. > :05:43.

:05:43. > :05:47.one, too, through this early part of the session. Perez we know is

:05:47. > :05:52.not going out any more because he has had his accident. Hulkenberg

:05:52. > :05:56.goes fourth-fastest in the Force India. He has only raced here once

:05:56. > :06:05.before a Grand Prix car. He has raced in GPT but crashed in the

:06:05. > :06:12.tunnel with a clutch problem. -- GP2. Hulkenberg is up to fifth,

:06:12. > :06:17.then Alonso, Hamilton, Button, Webber, Massa is tenth. Vettel is

:06:17. > :06:27.only 12th. Hamilton is on a quick lap. He has set the new fastest

:06:27. > :06:31.

:06:31. > :06:37.time in the sector. He is still on the yellow wall to tyres. Just

:06:37. > :06:41.brushing the barrier. Let's watch him. Fantastic, almost flat through

:06:41. > :06:51.the high-speed chicane. Nice and tidy as he gets the last part of

:06:51. > :06:56.

:06:56. > :07:01.this wimple. -- the swimming pool. He runs for the line. The last

:07:02. > :07:05.sector, he must have lost time before we joined him on board. That

:07:05. > :07:10.has left him a little bit short, having been the quickest man in the

:07:10. > :07:16.first sector. Kobayashi just touched the wall. We could end up

:07:16. > :07:21.with both Saubers out of this if they carry on like that. By the way,

:07:21. > :07:30.Michael Schumacher has done a 1:15.8. The two Mercedes are one

:07:30. > :07:34.and two at the moment. Michael Schumacher is fastest. Rosberg

:07:34. > :07:42.second, Maldonado third despite the incidents he had this morning. That

:07:42. > :07:47.Maldonado will have a 10 place grid penalty. Rosberg comes across the

:07:47. > :07:53.line. He is still second. 1:15.9 was a fraction faster than he had

:07:53. > :07:59.done but not quite fast enough to eclipse Michael Schumacher's time.

:07:59. > :08:05.He was lowest in the middle part of the lap. Rosberg improved in the

:08:05. > :08:15.first and last part. Felipe Massa has shown really good form this

:08:15. > :08:25.

:08:25. > :08:30.weekend the start. Felipe Massa is a former pole winner here. A good

:08:30. > :08:35.effort from di Resta, fifth quickest at the moment. We are

:08:35. > :08:40.watching Alonso. He has a different crash helmet this weekend. He is

:08:40. > :08:45.wearing a celebration crash helmet with a lot of gold paint and

:08:45. > :08:51.statistics on it, bearing in mind what he has achieved in Formula One

:08:51. > :09:01.over the years. His eighth fastest so slower than his team-mate Felipe

:09:01. > :09:17.

:09:18. > :09:27.sector, a good opening first lap in this qualifying session is Paul di

:09:27. > :09:33.Resta or four Force India. He is currently in fifth place. He has

:09:33. > :09:42.done that run on the super softs. Clearly not feeling confident that

:09:42. > :09:51.he could deliver the time on the yellow marked tyres. Sebastian

:09:51. > :09:57.Vettel, let's see what he is doing. Here's 30th at the moment. -- he is

:09:57. > :10:03.13th at the moment. Now we are seeing some traffic out there and

:10:03. > :10:11.that is where it will get demanding. Alonso has crossed the line in the

:10:11. > :10:15.Ferrari. He is seventh fastest. Grosjean is a ninth fastest using

:10:15. > :10:20.the harder compound tyre. We are still waiting for Raikkonen to do a

:10:20. > :10:28.lap. He has not yet done a lap. He is in the drop zone at the moment

:10:28. > :10:38.but we have under six minutes to go. It is still Schumacher, Rosberg,

:10:38. > :10:38.

:10:38. > :10:42.Mercedes one, two at the moment. Massa, Webber up in 4. Grosjean has

:10:42. > :10:46.been a real revelation in Formula One this year. He joined Grand Prix

:10:46. > :10:51.racing two years ago with the Renault team but it was not a good

:10:51. > :10:59.time for him more the team. He has come back after achieving the GP2

:10:59. > :11:06.title last year. Can he keep it neat and tidy? Good stuff so far.

:11:06. > :11:16.He was a bit wide at Portier which is the corner before swimming pool.

:11:16. > :11:31.

:11:31. > :11:37.will be disappointed with ninth place. He has been showing a lot

:11:37. > :11:42.more form earlier in the session. The important one here to watch is

:11:42. > :11:48.his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen. He has got to finish it off because he

:11:48. > :11:53.has nothing in the bank, as well. Senna going across the line. He is

:11:53. > :12:03.13th fastest. Maldonado in the other Williams his fifth quickest.

:12:03. > :12:34.

:12:34. > :12:41.in that first set to. -- sector. Hulkenberg has gone fastest. He is

:12:41. > :12:50.on the super soft tyre. They are the softer compound. Grosjean goes

:12:50. > :12:54.second now. Let's see what Kimi Raikkonen is doing? His lap might

:12:54. > :13:00.not be enough. The question is, will he have time to put another

:13:01. > :13:07.set of tyres on? This is not a good lap. He is baling and come in for a

:13:07. > :13:11.set of super softs I would suggest. I am looking at the pit crew.

:13:11. > :13:16.Raikkonen realising he is in trouble. They are doing a pit stop

:13:16. > :13:21.and they are going for the advantage of those tyres. With 2.5

:13:21. > :13:25.minutes to go, he will get a couple of laps if he is lucky, one that

:13:26. > :13:30.depending on the traffic. It is not ideal to do a pit stop like that

:13:30. > :13:35.because the tyres have to come out of the blanket surly. You want them

:13:35. > :13:40.wrap up for as long as possible. This is a bail out strategy. This

:13:40. > :13:45.would not have been the perfect plan. You have to look at his team-

:13:45. > :13:52.mate, Grosjean, in second place to confirm that. The Gary, your

:13:52. > :13:58.thoughts on that? Yes, you can see the yellow sidewall tyre will do a

:13:58. > :14:08.few laps but it is a gamble. He needs the extra time. I think it is

:14:08. > :14:13.a bad strategy for the team. At least one are two good laps but

:14:13. > :14:16.they did not get -- give the guy enough time to do that. He did not

:14:16. > :14:24.get any laps in in the first three practices because he had a steering

:14:24. > :14:28.issue so Kimi has not done that many laps this weekend? He has not.

:14:28. > :14:38.Kovalainen is dancing of the kerbs. Perez had his incident. He locks

:14:38. > :14:40.

:14:40. > :14:45.the front left. Timo Glock is ahead of him. Will it be enough for

:14:45. > :14:53.Kovalainen? It is a good lap, 70 fastest but they will have to wait

:14:53. > :15:03.and see what happens in the closing moments. -- 17th fastest. He gets

:15:03. > :15:18.

:15:18. > :15:22.second place, it should not be a big ask on these tyres. The problem

:15:22. > :15:29.is, you compromise your latter stages of qualifying if you have to

:15:29. > :15:34.do this. That is why we are saying it is not ideal. They will not have

:15:34. > :15:42.the tyres to use in the battle for pole position later on. Meanwhile,

:15:42. > :15:48.Mark Webber is seventh quickest. Kimi Raikkonen, just a sliding that

:15:48. > :15:53.Lotus around. About three tenths down on the very best in the second

:15:53. > :16:02.sector. But this will be plenty to getting into Q2. Just a couple of

:16:02. > :16:06.corners to go. Looked good coming through Rascasse. A little bit

:16:06. > :16:12.sideways as he came on the run down to the start finish. That will cost

:16:12. > :16:18.him a bit more time, but he is in fifth place.

:16:18. > :16:27.BEN EDWARDS: fifth fastest, but still a little bit off what we saw

:16:27. > :16:34.Hulkenberg do earlier on. Here's a man under pressure, although he is

:16:34. > :16:41.going pretty well on that middle sector. This should be a

:16:41. > :16:44.comfortable improvement from Sebastian. He comes up to the start

:16:44. > :16:52.finish, and this should get him well out of the dangers are. Yes,

:16:52. > :17:00.he is fourth fastest, Sebastian Vettel. Just watching Petrov here,

:17:00. > :17:10.to see if he can improve. Button, down to 16th place. But I think he

:17:10. > :17:12.

:17:12. > :17:17.is going to be safe. Everybody at I think is heading back to the pits.

:17:17. > :17:27.It looks like the normal group who will not have made it through, plus

:17:27. > :17:52.

:17:52. > :18:01.Sergio Perez, who crashed, of That's an HRT. Perez, who did not

:18:01. > :18:09.take part in that qualifying session, will start last. Remember,

:18:09. > :18:14.this does not tell us the full story. 13th for Hamilton, 16th for

:18:14. > :18:18.Button. But they did not use their super-soft tyres, which means they

:18:18. > :18:28.are in good shape for the rest of qualifying. Timo Glock is not

:18:28. > :18:33.through, but Pedro de la Rosa or out-qualified Charles Pic.

:18:33. > :18:42.So frustrating, particularly for Sergio Perez, with Kobayashi doing

:18:42. > :18:47.brilliantly in that session. Cast your mind back to last year - some

:18:47. > :18:52.circuits suit some drivers, not others. Monaco does not suit him,

:18:52. > :19:00.and it is a great pity. Does it not suit him, or are we saying there is

:19:00. > :19:08.a problem with the car? David thought the problem was the car,

:19:08. > :19:15.not the driver. Well, I think the car is perfect going out. He has

:19:15. > :19:17.obviously hit something, plans to barrier. These Steering parts,

:19:17. > :19:20.particularly on this French suspension, are quite easy to

:19:21. > :19:25.damage. If you hit something at that speed, you're going to damage

:19:25. > :19:32.it. I think the problem was not this particular corner, it was some

:19:32. > :19:37.corners beforehand. And such a blow for Sauber as a team. They have

:19:37. > :19:42.shown both in free practice and in qualifying that this car has some

:19:42. > :19:50.great speed. It has, and it is one of the revelations of this

:19:50. > :19:58.particular season. David was saying, perhaps he should have won against

:19:58. > :20:03.Alonso. But the car must be hugely competitive to allow you to do that.

:20:03. > :20:07.The car is outstanding. One thing you can say, despite crashing, it

:20:07. > :20:11.was a better qualifying session than last year. By a very big

:20:11. > :20:15.margin. We were very concerned about his overall health last year.

:20:16. > :20:21.Concussion is something which it is very hard to quantify. Of course,

:20:22. > :20:27.he missed a couple of races. But he will be disappointed, he will be

:20:27. > :20:31.wounded, but nowhere near as badly as last year. Yes, he missed a

:20:31. > :20:36.couple of races, but he said he felt ill for three or four Grand

:20:36. > :20:43.Prix after that accident. This car has done well to continue, to be

:20:43. > :20:48.fair. Kobayashi has taken a bang on both sides here. But this is a

:20:48. > :20:53.great story. Lots of people in my day, in racing, drivers would come

:20:53. > :20:59.in and say, that was such a great lap. We would say, you have hit the

:20:59. > :21:04.wall. They forget about how the car is set up, you just drive the

:21:04. > :21:08.wheels off the thing. And that is what happened here. Eddie, you made

:21:08. > :21:12.the revelation before qualifying that you are very confused! And I

:21:12. > :21:16.would imagine most people are confused, because we have seen the

:21:16. > :21:23.world champion, Sebastian Vettel, having to put on the faster tyre

:21:23. > :21:30.just to match his teammate, and the same applies to Kimi Raikkonen. He,

:21:30. > :21:35.too, was struggling enough to go on to the softer tyre - why is that?

:21:36. > :21:39.Kimi is a great poker player, but he did not use his cards very well

:21:39. > :21:43.there. Maybe they were too cocky, they thought they could get away

:21:43. > :21:49.with it without having to use the softer tyre. But Monaco is a

:21:49. > :21:55.different circuit. You cannot underestimate the role of the tyres.

:21:55. > :21:59.Lotus actually brought a special steering rack for Kimi this weekend.

:21:59. > :22:03.But he came back in after one lap and said he did not like it. And

:22:03. > :22:08.therefore he missed the whole of the first practice session - is it

:22:08. > :22:13.tough for a driver to recover from that? Well, if you do not change it

:22:13. > :22:17.for them, they get grumpy and irritable. I'm sure Kimi is no

:22:17. > :22:21.different to the rest of the drivers. But nevertheless, they are

:22:21. > :22:27.the people who are carrying the hopes of the team, the sponsors and

:22:27. > :22:32.everything. So, you change it, and then you point out to them, listen,

:22:32. > :22:42.Kimi, I think that was a mistake, why did you put us to all of that

:22:42. > :22:45.

:22:45. > :22:49.drama for nothing? Let's talk about Felipe Massa, he looked really on

:22:49. > :22:54.it all weekend. But he said earlier in the week that this was the

:22:54. > :22:58.lowest point of his career, and he wanted to see Monaco as a new start.

:22:58. > :23:02.You do not need to be Einstein to work that one out. Everyone has

:23:02. > :23:06.written him off. Every journalist in his pad it does not believe he

:23:06. > :23:12.will be in Ferrari next year. As a result, it gets into your bones and

:23:12. > :23:18.you feel vulnerable. -- in this paddock. He has to up his game big

:23:18. > :23:23.time, and I'm not sure just one race will be enough. Felipe Massa,

:23:23. > :23:28.how has he suddenly found that speed over Fernando Alonso, David?

:23:28. > :23:33.He has been good here in the past. You have either got the form around

:23:33. > :23:37.a street circuit or you haven't. This is not a track where you need

:23:37. > :23:42.to take a breath for the high-speed turns, but you need to have

:23:42. > :23:46.precision. Maybe he is just in that zone, and it is good to see,

:23:46. > :23:50.because he is a man under pressure. Here we are, building up for the

:23:50. > :23:54.second part of qualifying, then, and we had drama in the first part,

:23:54. > :24:01.with Sergio Perez out, and also with some of the teams having to

:24:01. > :24:06.put those super-soft tyres on to make it through. The green light is

:24:06. > :24:09.on at the end of the pit lane. We gather that Sergio Perez has gone

:24:09. > :24:16.off to the Medical Centre for a check-up, which is a routine

:24:16. > :24:20.check-up, which is a routine procedure. He looked perfectly well.

:24:20. > :24:25.But interestingly, in this second part of qualifying, the cars are

:24:25. > :24:28.taking to the track quite quickly. Obviously there is less time, it is

:24:28. > :24:32.only a 15 minute session, as opposed to 20 minutes.

:24:32. > :24:37.DAVID COULTHARD: You do not want to risk someone having an accident,

:24:37. > :24:42.putting some oil on the track, and you have missed that window. That

:24:42. > :24:47.is not lost on any of these guys. They want to give the driver has

:24:47. > :24:54.the most laps they possibly can. Crucially, they are getting

:24:55. > :25:00.multiple laps out of the tyres. They want to get themselves a bit

:25:00. > :25:08.of space from which to deliver the lap time. Gary, what are you seeing,

:25:08. > :25:15.are people going out on used sets? I reckon Alonso, Hamilton, Button,

:25:15. > :25:22.most of the big guys have gone out on a new set of super-softs. I

:25:22. > :25:29.think this session, they will have to do a 15.2 to feel they can get

:25:29. > :25:35.into the top 10. They are probably thinking to do it early before

:25:35. > :25:40.everybody starts to panic at the end of the session. Senna has got

:25:40. > :25:44.those soft tyres on, and he is going to go for it. A race winner

:25:44. > :25:48.here in the past in GP2, in fact, finishing ahead of Maldonado on

:25:48. > :25:53.that occasion. He needs a good qualifying performance today, David.

:25:53. > :26:03.He does, he has maintained his confidence. Talking to him earlier,

:26:03. > :26:03.

:26:04. > :26:07.he was talking about the team. He has not looked like the quickest

:26:07. > :26:11.driver in the team so far this weekend, but it is all about

:26:11. > :26:16.building your confidence. Let's see, this is his opportunity. Presuming

:26:16. > :26:21.he has got the same machinery, then this is his moment to shine. He is

:26:21. > :26:26.on the super-softs. Let's hope he does not pick up too much traffic

:26:26. > :26:32.as well. That is the other problem. Jean-Eric Vergne there, in the Toro

:26:32. > :26:39.Rosso, attacking the kerbs, trying to keep it as tidy as possible. A

:26:39. > :26:43.bit of traffic, that's Grosjean keeping out of his way, at Rascasse.

:26:43. > :26:53.Let's see what he does, as he comes across the line. Jean-Eric Vergne

:26:53. > :26:57.

:26:57. > :27:04.is fastest, with a 1:16.8. As Gary was saying, that will not be enough.

:27:04. > :27:12.I think Gary said he felt it would need to be at least a 16.5. Well,

:27:12. > :27:22.Gary, you must be a visionary. What did you say for this one, 15.2?

:27:22. > :27:24.

:27:24. > :27:34.15.2 or 15.3, for me. Have you any idea who is going to win the 3.30

:27:34. > :27:35.

:27:35. > :27:39.at Chepstow?! Well, according to Gary's theory, that time might be

:27:39. > :27:43.fast enough, from Rosberg. Here comes Michael Schumacher. Rosberg

:27:43. > :27:50.is the only teammate that has ever out-qualified Michael Schumacher at

:27:50. > :27:57.this track. That was the first year Michael came back, in 2010.

:27:57. > :28:07.Hamilton has just gone second. Now, come across the line, Mark Webber...

:28:07. > :28:12.

:28:13. > :28:18.He is second quickest with that. You're watching Sebastian Vettel,

:28:18. > :28:28.who seem to struggle a bit in the first part of qualifying. He has

:28:28. > :28:29.

:28:29. > :28:34.bailed out of this lap. He is going to go again. He has got Senna ahead

:28:34. > :28:44.of him, but well ahead, so he has got a clear run. Let's see what he

:28:44. > :28:51.

:28:51. > :28:57.got a clear run. Let's see what he session is to be in the top 10.

:28:57. > :29:01.Those numbers in and red represent the drop zone. Rosberg is fastest

:29:01. > :29:05.at the moment, Webber second. You're watching the world champion,

:29:05. > :29:09.Sebastian Vettel, the race winner here last year. Red Bull are

:29:09. > :29:16.looking for a hat-trick of pole positions and victories at Monaco.

:29:16. > :29:21.We have got problems for Jean-Eric Vergne! He has hit something.

:29:21. > :29:26.was that something out of the chicane, or has it happened earlier

:29:26. > :29:30.in the lap? Clearly trying to get himself back into the pits, get a

:29:30. > :29:40.new nose on. If he has not done any damage to the car, he will have

:29:40. > :29:45.

:29:45. > :29:50.time for another run. Massa, my goodness, avoiding both Toro Rossos.

:29:50. > :29:54.Massa bails out from that lap. It shows the confusion that you can

:29:54. > :30:00.get around these streets, because you cannot see above the barriers.

:30:00. > :30:04.You're relying on what the marshals are telling you. I am surprised his

:30:04. > :30:10.team were not telling him, be careful, you have got a Toro Rosso

:30:10. > :30:16.with a broken nose. So, just under nine minutes to go in the second

:30:16. > :30:21.part of qualifying. You're watching Michael Schumacher. He is currently

:30:21. > :30:31.sixth fastest. This lap, well, he was quicker than the previous lap

:30:31. > :30:53.

:30:54. > :30:59.in the first sector, but not in the board with Sebastian Vettel. He

:31:00. > :31:04.comes through the tight chicane out of the swimming pool complex. He

:31:04. > :31:13.was not so quick in the first sector but a good middle sector. It

:31:13. > :31:19.might improve belittle but not hugely here. He is not looking

:31:19. > :31:22.comfortable round there at the moment. Mark Webber has been on

:31:22. > :31:29.pole around here. We will get a replay of what happens with Jean-

:31:29. > :31:35.Eric Vergne. We have seen it happen before, I have done the same thing

:31:35. > :31:41.myself, he loses the car over the braking. The right suspension is

:31:41. > :31:51.damaged. I do not think we will see him take any further part in this

:31:51. > :31:56.

:31:56. > :32:01.section. We have that incident so close with Massa. Vettel is still

:32:01. > :32:07.going around. He has slowed it all down. I wonder if he is going to

:32:07. > :32:17.try for another lap on the super soft tyres. He is still in danger

:32:17. > :32:34.

:32:34. > :32:41.territory. His only night. -- he is rabbit? And Nice descriptive term

:32:41. > :32:51.from Sebastian Vettel there. We were in that crucial stage now. For

:32:51. > :32:54.

:32:54. > :33:01.Vettel is getting tricky for him. It is getting tricky. He definitely

:33:01. > :33:08.has to do something here. He was on used tyres. I think he said he had

:33:08. > :33:13.too much front wing. The jumping about like a rabbit, I think was a

:33:13. > :33:19.code. Does that mean he thinks he was on a billiard table or

:33:19. > :33:23.something? I think Red Bull were having some issues with the car's

:33:23. > :33:30.reaction through the bums on Thursday. Some debris there from

:33:30. > :33:36.the Toro Rosso -- the bumps. Kimi Raikkonen has come out, so has

:33:36. > :33:42.Grosjean and Hulkenberg as we get into the final 5.5 minutes of Q2.

:33:42. > :33:47.Who will go into the top 10 and the battle for pole position? None of

:33:47. > :33:57.the marshals have decided to get the debris away. It is a clear

:33:57. > :33:58.

:33:58. > :34:04.track and off-line. Charlie Whiting, race director is Knox -- not

:34:04. > :34:09.feeling the need to send them out there. I would not one that job.

:34:09. > :34:14.Brave marshals. Many of them are British. They are not paid, they do

:34:14. > :34:19.it for passion. There are lot of marshals there. It is only about a

:34:19. > :34:25.two mile track but there are about 650 marshals policing it. Contact

:34:25. > :34:29.can happen at any point. They are doing a great job out there.

:34:29. > :34:33.Rosberg, I think will be fairly happy to sit and wait. You are

:34:33. > :34:39.watching Hulkenberg. Di Resta has come out onto the circuit so both

:34:39. > :34:46.Force Indias are on track. Everybody will be using the red

:34:46. > :34:56.wall tyre at this stage in their attempt to get into the top 10.

:34:56. > :35:00.

:35:00. > :35:05.two notices are 12th and 13th. -- the two Lotuses. They have only got

:35:05. > :35:15.four minutes to improve their performance. Meanwhile, Button has

:35:15. > :35:15.

:35:15. > :35:22.had to come out but Hamilton will be able to stay in. Here we go.

:35:22. > :35:29.Hulkenberg about cross the line. This time his eighth fastest with

:35:29. > :35:35.the Force India. Now we are on board with Kimi Raikkonen. A pretty

:35:35. > :35:43.good lap as long as he keeps it together. Not quite enough to get

:35:43. > :35:50.into the top 10 at the moment. he was a bit wide on the chicane.

:35:50. > :35:55.This is not a good lap from Kimi Raikkonen. He is trying to get into

:35:55. > :36:00.the top 10 but only 12 but the moment. Here comes his team-mate

:36:00. > :36:10.also with a different cash Hammett this weekend. A team celebrating

:36:10. > :36:14.500 Grand Prix is -- crash helmet. I am confused. I thought they

:36:14. > :36:18.genuinely looked good through the practice sessions. Unless they have

:36:18. > :36:22.been running considerably less fuel than the other cars. It is not

:36:23. > :36:27.working for them at the moment. car is maybe not working on the

:36:27. > :36:37.super soft tyre but it seemed to work on the yellow tie. That is a

:36:37. > :36:47.

:36:47. > :36:52.jumping off the kerb there. It looks more like a bucking Bronco

:36:52. > :36:56.than a cute little bunny rabbit hopping. Will it be enough for

:36:56. > :37:06.Sebastian? It looks like he might get into the top 10 but he is

:37:06. > :37:27.

:37:27. > :37:31.He has not done enough yet to get into the top 10. You are watching

:37:32. > :37:35.Daniel Ricciardo. He is down in 15th place at the moment. He is

:37:36. > :37:44.desperately trying to move up. He had a brilliant qualifying

:37:44. > :37:54.performance in Bahrain earlier this year. Did not managed to convert it

:37:54. > :37:55.

:37:55. > :38:04.by a poor start. Maldonado has gone fastest in the middle sector.

:38:04. > :38:10.Button is not be doing anything at will. The Williams is looking fast

:38:10. > :38:15.as it did in Barcelona. Button will not go around. He is at the chicane.

:38:15. > :38:24.He might just make it round but he is not on a good lap. Can he get

:38:24. > :38:28.around and start this lap? They are all together, Raikkonen, Button,

:38:28. > :38:34.Grosjean, they are just going to make it, I think. We are on board

:38:34. > :38:38.with Grosjean. He has just passed our commentary box say with 28

:38:38. > :38:45.seconds to go he will make it round with a few seconds to spare and he

:38:45. > :38:49.will have one lap to get into the top 10. He has gone up to eight.

:38:49. > :38:53.Grosjean has done it. We have Raikkonen and Button fighting to

:38:53. > :39:03.get into the top 10 in the last lap as the chequered flag is going to

:39:03. > :39:03.

:39:03. > :39:08.come out in a moment or two. Felipe Massa of with the fastest time.

:39:08. > :39:14.Grosjean has just set the fastest first sector time in the Lotus so

:39:14. > :39:24.the Frenchman is going quickly now on the soft tyres. Can Raikkonen do

:39:24. > :39:25.

:39:25. > :39:30.something similar? I think Button is in a spot of trouble here. Let's

:39:30. > :39:33.keep a close eye on what Jenson is doing. It is not his best sector

:39:33. > :39:40.which would suggest he does not have a great deal of confidence in

:39:40. > :39:50.what the car is telling him. Let's see what Senna does. A bit of a

:39:50. > :39:52.

:39:52. > :39:57.slide there. Senna there is currently 17th goes 40 it. It is

:39:57. > :40:07.not enough. Raikkonen tenth. What about Jenson Button? Can he do

:40:07. > :40:11.anything? Button across the line. He is not going to make it. He is

:40:11. > :40:15.13th. Jenson Button has not made the top 10. There is the scene in

:40:15. > :40:20.the McLaren pit. One of disappointment. Hamilton has made

:40:20. > :40:27.it through but Jenson Button will not be in the fight for pole.

:40:27. > :40:37.he knew it. He lifted before even crossing the line. He has the knack

:40:37. > :40:43.data in the cockpit. -- lap data for some out of qualifying after

:40:43. > :40:51.the second session, Hulkenberg, Kobayashi, Jenson Button, Bruno

:40:51. > :41:01.Senna, Paul di Resta and the two Toro Rossos.

:41:01. > :41:06.JAKE: Jenson Button went on to win the rise a Int 2009. He said he was

:41:06. > :41:11.coming into this weekend full of confidence. Impressive speed in

:41:11. > :41:17.three practices has given way to a difficult qualifying session.

:41:17. > :41:22.whole thing is a mess. I am trying to figure out why is he in that

:41:22. > :41:26.position. He obviously felt he was going to have a challenge for pole

:41:26. > :41:30.position and he is not even close. The car, the tyres, the whole

:41:30. > :41:34.sequence of racing at the moment is so confusing. The way we have seen

:41:34. > :41:39.it going is not as people struggling from weekend to weekend,

:41:39. > :41:41.this is over the course of one weekend. Having the speed with

:41:41. > :41:47.certain weather conditions, dry conditions and track conditions,

:41:48. > :41:50.they have the inability to find the speed. It is confusing for the

:41:50. > :41:55.engineers and mechanics because they are not able to solve the

:41:55. > :42:02.problem. We are not able to solve it either because we see Massa was

:42:02. > :42:07.quickest. What I find it difficult to understand is the rapport

:42:07. > :42:11.between the engineers and the drivers, the biggest thing that is

:42:11. > :42:16.on the ground are tyres and it still comes down to how they work

:42:16. > :42:20.the tyres the best. That seems to be giving the best return.

:42:20. > :42:26.Remarkably, I was standing next to this very Red Bull a year ago

:42:26. > :42:28.talking to Mark Webber and he was really struggling. This year, he is

:42:28. > :42:34.certainly outplaying Sebastian Vettel when it comes to qualifying.

:42:34. > :42:38.And easily. Sebastian is panicking? He is driving as if he has

:42:38. > :42:44.panicking. He does not have that nice, fluid style that he has. You

:42:44. > :42:51.always know when the guy is not happy with the car, he is much

:42:51. > :42:55.jerky with the Steering wheel. He does not seem at ease here.

:42:55. > :42:58.test of their world champion? Indeed. Let's remember, world

:42:58. > :43:02.champion or not, how ridiculous would it be to get Massa to win the

:43:02. > :43:06.race, it would be an extra fairy tale. He would be the sixth

:43:06. > :43:09.different winner and we did not even think of him. If we get back

:43:09. > :43:13.to the last session, Felipe Massa you could say is lucky to be in

:43:13. > :43:17.qualifying because if he had a very close moment. We saw the incident

:43:17. > :43:21.with Jean-Eric Vergne exiting from the tunnel. That is almost an

:43:21. > :43:27.action replay of Perez a year ago and Poulter Leicester today. There

:43:27. > :43:32.is clearly an issue and they have levelled at the bump on the exit. -

:43:32. > :43:35.- and Paul di Resta. I think if the cars go too wide they hit the

:43:36. > :43:38.bumper in a different way. They thought there was too much bit to

:43:38. > :43:43.none in the surface which was coming to the top and making it

:43:43. > :43:47.slippy but I do not think that is the case. I think the drivers are

:43:47. > :43:53.not going straight enough. The slightest movement on the steering

:43:53. > :43:58.wheel catches them out. Jean-Eric Vergne damages his right, rear tyre

:43:58. > :44:02.and decides get rid of the front nose. Just watched Felipe Massa

:44:02. > :44:09.coming round the swimming pool section. He was so close to

:44:09. > :44:13.collecting both of these cars, the Toro Rossos. That is the whole

:44:13. > :44:18.secret. You have to be lucky. I know in sport you shouldn't talk

:44:18. > :44:24.about luck but here in Monaco, you have to have a much better chance.

:44:24. > :44:29.You do not see any yellow flags here. David asked if Felipe was

:44:29. > :44:35.speeding on a yellow flag? There is a white flag which means lower car

:44:35. > :44:38.on track. Let's hope there is no reporting to the stewards there. I

:44:38. > :44:42.think there is a lot of good feeling about Felipe Massa. He has

:44:42. > :44:47.been punished by eight every journalist in creation almost this

:44:47. > :44:53.last couple of weeks. It would be a fairy-tale as I have just said.

:44:53. > :44:58.he do it is the question. Let's talk about the men who are fighting

:44:58. > :45:05.him for that position. Mercedes have done well. Nico Rosberg has

:45:05. > :45:09.showed some extra over Michael. Michael is the genius around here.

:45:09. > :45:13.And Nico has been carrying off where he has been for the last

:45:13. > :45:16.couple of seasons. He has been pushing Michael and driving the

:45:16. > :45:20.whole team forward. I'm keen to speak to you and also David

:45:21. > :45:25.Coulthard about this, Pastor Maldonado will not realise he had

:45:25. > :45:31.an unnecessary culling together with Sergio Perez. He has a 10

:45:31. > :45:35.place penalty but he is in the final part of qualifying. Yes, and

:45:35. > :45:40.he still has to take the penalty. I know of Frank is like. He will give

:45:40. > :45:44.him some talking to. David, you have driven for Frank Williams, how

:45:44. > :45:49.frustrating for the team to have a car which is good but a driver who

:45:49. > :45:57.lost his head? Elects the team down, simple as that. You carry the hopes

:45:57. > :46:02.of the team who are with you at the track. He is a nice guy. He drove

:46:02. > :46:06.extremely well in Barcelona. This is not the first time we saw this

:46:06. > :46:11.kind of reaction. I think it is unacceptable and he is lucky to get

:46:11. > :46:15.away with a 10 place penalty. He used his car and cut across the

:46:15. > :46:20.front of Perez. You cannot do that. If it is not a great example to the

:46:20. > :46:24.next generation. He saw the reaction from Perez. Whatever that

:46:24. > :46:32.means in Spanish. Somebody can tweet ass and explain what it

:46:32. > :46:38.means! He will be spoken to, for sure. He will find himself in tenth

:46:38. > :46:42.place. David, it is reminiscent of Formula Ford. Tactics, we were told.

:46:42. > :46:45.We will all of young hooligans and running into each other. That

:46:45. > :46:49.should be one in the past four Grand Prix drivers and they should

:46:49. > :46:53.have learnt by now it is unacceptable behaviour. It was not

:46:54. > :47:03.there when I was in Formula Ford so thankfully it is a long way in the

:47:04. > :47:11.

:47:11. > :47:17.part of qualifying. And Q3 gets under way. Two Mercedes in there,

:47:17. > :47:20.both Rosberg and Michael Schumacher. Both Ferraris this time - the first

:47:20. > :47:27.time this season that Massa has made it into the final part of

:47:27. > :47:37.qualifying. Both Red Bulls are in there, but it was pretty marginal.

:47:37. > :47:45.

:47:45. > :47:49.What are we going to see, do you think, David? We saw a 1:13.5 I

:47:49. > :47:55.believe last year for Sebastian Vettel, so we will see if they can

:47:55. > :47:59.get close to that. Also, something else to bear in mind, we talk about

:47:59. > :48:06.Maldonado and his 10 place penalty. Don't forget that Michael

:48:06. > :48:14.Schumacher has got a five place penalty as well for crashing in to

:48:14. > :48:19.Senna in the last Grand Prix. was interesting, to see Nico

:48:20. > :48:29.Rosberg turning in a lot of lock going through Tabac. He was trying

:48:30. > :48:31.

:48:31. > :48:40.to generate front heat. Get as heavy as possible on the brakes,

:48:40. > :48:45.and it radiates out through the carbon discs. Up the hill he comes

:48:45. > :48:53.towards Massenet, followed by Casino Square. Gary, what do you

:48:53. > :48:58.see as pole position here? 14.5 or 14.6 was my estimation before the

:48:58. > :49:04.start. I think Rosberg has got the most left, he seems as though he

:49:04. > :49:09.will be able to get on with the job. Saying that, though, he locked up

:49:09. > :49:13.on the entry to Mirabeau, which seemed to put him a bit out of

:49:13. > :49:23.shape coming up to Loews. Let's see how he recovers in the middle

:49:23. > :49:32.sector. Just over a tenth down on what they achieved in the previous

:49:32. > :49:36.session, and he has backed out of this lap. He has got lots of clean

:49:36. > :49:41.track - not all cars are on track at the moment. So, he can get

:49:41. > :49:44.himself Reset, take a breath and have another go. It was interesting

:49:44. > :49:49.watching him this morning, he actually did his best lap on the

:49:49. > :49:51.second lap on that set of tyres. It was not his first lap. Wear with

:49:51. > :50:01.was not his first lap. Wear with Hamilton now. This is looking

:50:01. > :50:03.

:50:03. > :50:06.pretty good, but there, not sure it will be quite enough. Hamilton on

:50:06. > :50:08.to the start-finish area. Let's see to the start-finish area. Let's see

:50:08. > :50:18.what this will be. He is second fastest at the moment, Lewis

:50:18. > :50:31.

:50:31. > :50:33.Hamilton. He will get another lap pretty quick on this lap. This one

:50:33. > :50:42.could be faster than Maldonado's benchmark time. Here comes the

:50:42. > :50:52.Frenchman! He does a 1:14.6. Well, Gary reckoned it would be around

:50:52. > :50:52.

:50:52. > :50:55.that mark. Here comes Michael Schumacher's! Egos second-fastest.

:50:55. > :51:01.-- he goes second-fastest. DAVID COULTHARD: That was a very

:51:01. > :51:04.impressive lap from Sebastien Grosjean. Rosberg has now done the

:51:04. > :51:11.quickest middle sector, so he could be challenging for the quickest

:51:11. > :51:16.time. He has done it, he has gone fastest! Nico Rosberg has gone

:51:16. > :51:22.fastest! On board with Lewis Hamilton. Not going fast enough so

:51:22. > :51:32.far, he goes wide at Anthony Noghes, that will cost him a tenth. He is

:51:32. > :51:33.

:51:33. > :51:39.only third. Now, it's Mark Webber, who has set the fastest middle

:51:39. > :51:43.sector. Webber is really flying! He loves the Monaco circuit. He won

:51:43. > :51:48.here in the lower categories, then in Formula 1 a couple of years ago.

:51:48. > :51:53.Is this enough? No, it is third. He has displaced Hamilton. Just

:51:53. > :51:57.remember how crucial this pole position can be. We still have five

:51:57. > :52:02.minutes to go, but I think this is incredible, the top three covered

:52:02. > :52:12.by a tenth around the streets of Monte Carlo! Just remarkable, look

:52:12. > :52:18.

:52:18. > :52:28.people leaving it a bit later to come out? Yes, some people leaving

:52:28. > :52:30.

:52:30. > :52:34.it late to do that one run. They are waiting for the others to come

:52:34. > :52:43.in, so that they will have as little traffic on the track as

:52:43. > :52:49.possible. I think right now would be the quietest period, so I'm not

:52:49. > :52:53.sure why the Ferraris have not gone out. Well, Alonso has gone out now.

:52:53. > :52:58.I was speaking to Jaime Alguersuari, the Pirelli test driver, who was

:52:58. > :53:03.saying that one thing about the Pirelli tyre is, it is very

:53:03. > :53:07.difficult to blend your braking with cornering. But he was saying

:53:07. > :53:12.that here at Monaco, you do not really do that anyway, so that

:53:12. > :53:17.might be helping Massa. Yes, it is a circuit of where you need to

:53:17. > :53:20.leave a bit more of a margin on the braking phase. Because one mistake

:53:20. > :53:26.on braking will more than likely put you on the wrong line and cost

:53:26. > :53:30.so much time. All the corners are so interlinked, get out of position

:53:30. > :53:34.on one corner, and it affects you may be three corners down the road.

:53:34. > :53:42.He knows he has to go at least three tenths quicker than his

:53:42. > :53:49.previous best. So, he maybe felt that was a great lap in Q2, but he

:53:49. > :53:52.has to go at least four tenths quicker. It is immense pressure,

:53:52. > :53:59.psychologically. You're battling with yourself, where can I find

:53:59. > :54:08.that time? Can he find a bit more in the corners? Let's see what his

:54:08. > :54:13.opening sector will be. That's two tenths down on Rosberg. And he has

:54:13. > :54:18.got traffic ahead. But it is still looking pretty good. The traffic

:54:18. > :54:21.gets out of the way. Massa on a bit of a charge. He is no doubt just

:54:21. > :54:26.happy to be in this final part of qualifying, for the first time this

:54:26. > :54:28.year. He did have that amazing pole year. He did have that amazing pole

:54:28. > :54:34.position in 2008, when even he was astonished with how fast he went, I

:54:34. > :54:40.think. So he knows he can do it. On board with Kimi Raikkonen. He will

:54:40. > :54:45.be trying to improve on seventh position. Let's see. Comes out of

:54:45. > :54:48.the last corner... He crosses the line in sixth position. But don't

:54:48. > :54:56.line in sixth position. But don't forget, Romain Grosjean, his

:54:56. > :54:59.teammate, is second-fastest. Massa comes through, in eighth. Still

:54:59. > :55:06.waiting for Alonso to complete a lap.

:55:06. > :55:11.DAVID COULTHARD: That's four tenths slower than he managed in Q2.

:55:11. > :55:15.Maldonado getting very wide through Sainte Devote. I'm not sure what he

:55:15. > :55:20.thinks he can achieve with his 10 plays Belotti, but he is having a

:55:20. > :55:30.go, anyway. He still wants the honour of being fastest in Monaco,

:55:30. > :55:32.

:55:32. > :55:42.even if he has got the penalty. This is not good enough. Maybe an

:55:42. > :55:45.

:55:45. > :55:50.element of frustration coming through for Maldonado. Back with

:55:50. > :55:57.Alonso, a little bit wide through the first part of that high-speed

:55:57. > :56:00.chicane. Let's see how he finishes the lap. He has been driving well

:56:00. > :56:09.this weekend. Let's see whether he can get that Ferrari near the front,

:56:10. > :56:13.as he did in Barcelona, of course. He goes fifth. Joint Championship

:56:13. > :56:17.leader, of course, with Sebastian Vettel. We're still waiting for

:56:17. > :56:21.Vettel to complete a lap. Meanwhile, Vettel to complete a lap. Meanwhile,

:56:21. > :56:28.Hamilton is on a good lap. And we are riding with Mark Webber now. He

:56:28. > :56:32.is currently third. That first sector, nothing to shout about.

:56:32. > :56:42.I think Mark is going to struggle to make that time up in the next

:56:42. > :56:49.

:56:49. > :56:54.Yes, so what went wrong in the first sector? Can he get enough in

:56:54. > :56:58.this last run to the line? Let's see. He has been very rapid in that

:56:58. > :57:03.middle sector... He has gone fastest! Mark Webber has gone

:57:03. > :57:13.fastest! Beckhams Hamilton. He is having a good lap, so is Romain

:57:13. > :57:19.Grosjean. Third place for Hamilton. The clock ticks away-0. Here comes

:57:19. > :57:23.Kimi Raikkonen - can he do anything? Across the line goes Kimi

:57:23. > :57:26.Raikkonen, and no change for him, he stays seventh. Still waiting for

:57:26. > :57:32.Romain Grosjean, and Michael Schumacher has just done the

:57:32. > :57:36.fastest middle sector as well. What a climax to qualifying in Monaco!

:57:36. > :57:41.Massa comes across the line in sixth. Here comes Michael

:57:42. > :57:45.Schumacher's! The Master of Monaco! Can he do it? He has done a!

:57:45. > :57:50.Michael Schumacher is on provisional pole position. But he

:57:50. > :57:53.has got a penalty of five places on the grid, remember. We're still

:57:54. > :57:58.waiting for Romain Grosjean. Can he snatch it on the line? No, he

:57:58. > :58:03.cannot. It is Michael Schumacher who is fastest, but he will not

:58:03. > :58:08.start from pole position! What a story here for Michael Schumacher!

:58:08. > :58:14.He took his first ever pole position here in Monaco in 1994. It

:58:14. > :58:21.would be his 69th career pole position, but it will not be,

:58:21. > :58:26.because of that penalty. So, let's hailed the pole man, Mark Webber!

:58:26. > :58:36.It will indeed be Mark Webber, on pole. But what a performance from

:58:36. > :58:36.

:58:36. > :58:42.Michael Schumacher. He might not have pole, but he has got the

:58:42. > :58:47.honour of being fastest here today. And the dishonour of getting a

:58:47. > :58:57.penalty for running someone in Barcelona!

:58:57. > :58:59.

:58:59. > :59:04.RADIO: Pole position, well done, Michael. Top job, Michael. Wow!

:59:04. > :59:08.Michael. Top job, Michael. Wow! What a feeling! That is quite

:59:08. > :59:12.something. Michael Schumacher, who has been struggling, he has got two

:59:12. > :59:18.points in the Championship. He has had a lot of bad luck this year. He

:59:18. > :59:22.started the season out qualifying his teammate, but then Rosberg out-

:59:22. > :59:27.qualified him when the Mercedes was so strong in China. And he has

:59:27. > :59:35.struggled in the last couple of races. He had that incident last

:59:35. > :59:39.time out with Senna. He has the glory of being fastest, even if he

:59:39. > :59:42.will not get to start from pole position. It will matter a great

:59:42. > :59:46.deal to him, because there have been a lot of questions about

:59:46. > :59:49.whether Michael still has that little edge, about whether he will

:59:49. > :59:53.continue in Formula 1. And this will certainly take away that

:59:53. > :00:00.pressure. You will get the bragging rights, as you say, of being the

:00:00. > :00:06.fastest man. But how much regret will he have for that moment of,

:00:06. > :00:10.well, not quite madness, but the mistake he made in Barcelona. He

:00:10. > :00:15.got the penalty for that, not for the first time in his career. We

:00:15. > :00:21.should not really be surprised, a seven-times world champion, that he

:00:21. > :00:25.can drive a fast lap. But it will be Mark Webber who starts on pole

:00:25. > :00:30.position tomorrow. He has done that before, two years ago, and he went

:00:30. > :00:36.on to take victory. Vettel did not go in that final part of qualifying,

:00:36. > :00:42.by the way, he had run out of tyres. So, Webber will start up front, and

:00:42. > :00:52.Vettel will start in tenth position. Maldonado, by the way, who has got

:00:52. > :00:54.

:00:54. > :00:59.that 10 place penalty, was 9th quickest, so he will end up back in

:00:59. > :01:04.18th place, once they all get moved around. So, it is Mark Webber who

:01:04. > :01:14.will start in pole position. He was only slower by eight hundredths of

:01:14. > :01:20.

:01:20. > :01:25.a second. Look at that smile on So, Michael Schumacher has taken

:01:25. > :01:30.pole position in theory, but it is actually Mark Webber who will start

:01:30. > :01:37.from pole position on Sunday. Both the Mercedes up there with Rosberg

:01:37. > :01:41.in third. Hamilton fourth, Grosjean Fifth.

:01:41. > :01:45.What a wonderful qualifying session befitting of the streets of Monaco.

:01:45. > :01:49.I would love to say that up here the crowd went mile but one of the

:01:49. > :01:53.unique things about the Monaco Grand Prix, Eddie, is sadly people

:01:53. > :01:59.do not tend to know what is going on because they are sitting by

:01:59. > :02:02.people enjoying themselves while we watch the racing. We said we would

:02:02. > :02:09.moan and groan when Schumacher drove badly, when he drove like

:02:09. > :02:13.that we should Laud him. And we do. Want to give him all the accolades

:02:13. > :02:18.which are justifiably due to him but sometimes he disappoints. He

:02:18. > :02:22.disappointed against Senna and he pays the penalty. How much would he

:02:22. > :02:26.want to be on pole here? Such a shame and the record books will not

:02:26. > :02:31.show this as a pole position for Michael Schumacher. I bet it feels

:02:31. > :02:35.good for Ross Braun and Mercedes. Ross, you little beauty, what about

:02:35. > :02:44.that one? Actually, I have to confess it brought a little tear to

:02:44. > :02:49.my eye. He has faced some tough times since she came back and he

:02:49. > :02:54.has been in good shape all weekend. We did the race work and it all

:02:54. > :02:59.seemed to come together well in qualifying. He gets a five place

:02:59. > :03:07.penalty now so that effectively puts Nico on the front row? Yes, it

:03:07. > :03:11.is frustrating. That is the way it is. Making the best of the tyres

:03:11. > :03:16.now tomorrow will be the critical thing. We were in a good position

:03:16. > :03:19.last year and at big problem with the tyres in the first stint. That

:03:19. > :03:23.will be the next challenge that we have. There was a lot of

:03:23. > :03:27.controversy about the tyres, do you think you are on top of that?

:03:27. > :03:30.don't think the tyres you ever get on top of, to be honest. If you try

:03:30. > :03:36.to create a methodology of philosophy and sometimes it works

:03:36. > :03:41.in your favour. On Thursday, Lotus looked and beatable. Today, it is a

:03:41. > :03:45.different picture. -- unbeatable. It is a philosophy and every race

:03:45. > :03:49.you learn a bit more. Thanks, Ross and good luck tomorrow.

:03:49. > :03:53.A well done, Ross, well done Mercedes. There was a huge cheer

:03:53. > :03:57.from the hill when Michael Schumacher was fast as. But the man

:03:57. > :04:01.who will really be celebrating his Mark Webber. We are not that far

:04:01. > :04:05.away from the famous pool scene from last year. If Mark Webber is

:04:05. > :04:09.able to bring home a win this season, that would make it six

:04:09. > :04:14.different winners, I do not think there would be many people who

:04:14. > :04:18.would begrudge him that. Well done, Mark Webber. He has found some

:04:18. > :04:22.fantastic form. But Jenson Button is starting to struggle a bit. He

:04:22. > :04:26.starts a 13th on the grid. Let's hear from him. If previous years

:04:26. > :04:34.this has been happy hunting ground for you but not this weekend, tell

:04:34. > :04:39.us what happened? I do not have the pace, that is it really. This

:04:39. > :04:44.morning, the car felt good. The pace was pretty strong. But we do

:04:44. > :04:49.not have it this afternoon when it counts. A bit of a problem. It

:04:49. > :04:53.makes tomorrow a bit difficult. have had some mixed up Sundays but

:04:53. > :04:57.here in Monaco, Saturday can really shake your weekend. Can we expect

:04:57. > :05:03.anything different tomorrow than we have seen? It will not be like the

:05:03. > :05:08.rest of the season, I don't think. Monaco it is all about qualifying.

:05:08. > :05:12.I think it proved a last year. The top three were the top three at the

:05:12. > :05:17.end of the race. It might have been a slightly different order. It is

:05:17. > :05:23.the way Monica is. It is a great place when you put up a lap and you

:05:23. > :05:27.feel good in the car. I did not have that day. Tomorrow will be

:05:27. > :05:31.difficult. So, Jenson Button only good enough

:05:31. > :05:35.for 13th. Lewis Hamilton good enough to finish fourth.

:05:35. > :05:39.exciting qualifying from our point of view, what was it like for you?

:05:39. > :05:43.It was exciting. Mentally tough. One of the toughest qualifying

:05:43. > :05:50.sessions I have experienced but it was so much fun. The guys did a

:05:51. > :05:56.great job in preparing the car. I think we probably struggled a

:05:56. > :06:02.little bit in the middle and last sector. I think in the low-speed

:06:02. > :06:05.corners we were not so quick. Nonetheless, fortunate to have

:06:05. > :06:10.Michael having the penalty so that puts us a little further ahead so I

:06:10. > :06:16.am really happy. How do you think it will translate tomorrow because

:06:16. > :06:20.it will come down to tyres? We have seen some next up races this season.

:06:20. > :06:24.Absolutely. It will be a tough race. I do not know what the weather will

:06:24. > :06:30.be light. They said there would be rain today and obviously it has not.

:06:30. > :06:35.Tomorrow's forecast is better. The tyres and strategy can play a big

:06:35. > :06:39.role here. If we get a good start we will be inviting position for

:06:40. > :06:44.the win. I will give everything tomorrow to move up. You have that

:06:44. > :06:48.twinkle in your eye, are you fancy in your chances tomorrow? I don't

:06:48. > :06:53.know. I have got a good feeling about the weekend but as I said, I

:06:53. > :06:57.have got two great drivers in front of me who will make it as hard as

:06:57. > :07:01.possible for me to get by and to beat but we will do everything we

:07:01. > :07:07.can. To thank you. Lewis starts third. It is great to

:07:07. > :07:13.see him smiling. Plenty more to come from the BBC today. Inside F1

:07:13. > :07:16.will be on the BBC News Channel at 6:45pm tonight. And we are back,

:07:16. > :07:21.live, in high-definition tomorrow afternoon for the Monaco Grand Prix.

:07:22. > :07:25.All the latest reaction online. Nice to see you a fresh face back
