:01:24. > :01:29.Good afternoon from Monte Carlo, in The Monte Carlo Grand Prix...

:01:29. > :01:34.Probably the best race in Europe to win. One of the most demanding

:01:34. > :01:39.circuits in Europe. A great test, not only of car but also of driver.

:01:39. > :01:43.No doubt, the atmosphere is electric. This is the greatest race.

:01:43. > :01:53.I could never understand what it is like to drive around here. Watch

:01:53. > :01:55.

:01:55. > :02:01.The crowd are going absolutely mad! Into Casino Square, again. This is

:02:01. > :02:04.the most exciting place in Grand Prix racing. All of the grip in the

:02:04. > :02:14.world. But then this is Monaco. chances of finishing are very

:02:14. > :02:20.

:02:20. > :02:27.Player wins. That is the new race leader. Right on his tail! Look at

:02:27. > :02:32.that! Ayrton Sanai -- Ayrton Senna goes out of the Grand Prix.

:02:32. > :02:37.Everybody around the circuit is going mad. He will never have been

:02:37. > :02:47.more determined to get past anybody. You can see for yourself what the

:02:47. > :02:47.

:02:47. > :02:51.situation is. This is absolutely sensational! Damon Hill has got

:02:51. > :03:01.ahead on the right. The rider again, the left. This is absolutely

:03:01. > :03:13.

:03:13. > :03:18.crucial! Ayrton Senna wins at If anyone is imagining what it

:03:18. > :03:23.would be like... Just don't waste your time a. This afternoon, the

:03:23. > :03:26.glamorous life of a Formula One tyre comes to an abrupt, aggressive

:03:26. > :03:30.end, sacrificed in the name of speed around the streets of Monaco.

:03:30. > :03:34.Pushed to the limits until it loses its grip on the race. Alongside me,

:03:34. > :03:39.as ever, two men that have burnt plenty of rubber, Eddie Jordan who

:03:39. > :03:43.has been raising here for 20 years, and David Coulthard, a double

:03:43. > :03:47.winner around the streets. Where does that rank in your career?

:03:47. > :03:50.Right at the top. Winning the British Grand Prix, you are very

:03:50. > :03:53.proud as a Brit, but around the streets of Monaco where you cannot

:03:53. > :04:01.make one mistake, it is the ultimate reward for the ultimate

:04:01. > :04:04.challenge. The ultimate challenge involves this corner, the

:04:04. > :04:14.penultimate corner, this is La Rascasse. It's a perfect example of

:04:14. > :04:18.how it can be racetrack by day, party venue by night, there is the

:04:18. > :04:22.bar. Everybody is absolutely trashed, this is a nightclub,

:04:22. > :04:28.buzzing like you cannot imagine that my time. Then we had everybody

:04:28. > :04:32.under control, the marshals, and it is a real racecourse. Eddie has had

:04:32. > :04:39.quite a few nights to Remember in Nakba, clearly. There have been

:04:39. > :04:47.some moments to remember as we look forward towards the final corner,

:04:47. > :04:51.Anthony Noghes. Of course, Schumacher received a penalty here.

:04:51. > :04:55.You can see the images of that moment, when he parked the car.

:04:55. > :04:59.Some questioned if it was too slow at the people down at the end of

:04:59. > :05:04.qualifying. What a great performance yesterday, but off the

:05:04. > :05:14.back of his penalty from Barcelona he gets a five place grid drop and

:05:14. > :05:14.

:05:15. > :05:18.Before we walk into the pit lane, a little wave from the fans. Enjoy

:05:18. > :05:24.the Grand Prix. The Brits and the Aussies out in force. Sometimes it

:05:24. > :05:28.is a bit sterile, but not here. That man with a megaphone, he gets

:05:28. > :05:38.a bit tiresome eventually! In here you have 24 of the most expensive

:05:38. > :05:45.

:05:45. > :05:55.cars in the world. But what do we # We are beautiful and dirty rich...

:05:55. > :06:08.

:06:08. > :06:13.# We are beautiful and dirty rich. There he is, with the microphone.

:06:13. > :06:17.And Lewis Hamilton, you would think he would have better things to do.

:06:17. > :06:21.The most popular thing to do out here is a game of look-at-me on

:06:21. > :06:29.your boat, but not out there. No surprise that the hill is full this

:06:29. > :06:33.year, but we have had the closest and most dramatic start to a season

:06:33. > :06:37.that anyone can remember? Sebastian Vettel came here last year with a

:06:37. > :06:47.40 point lead. He's tied with Fernando Alonso, driving a car that

:06:47. > :06:53.

:06:53. > :06:57.Before we get into what happened in qualifying yesterday, let's put

:06:57. > :07:01.qualifying into perspective. There were few penalties handed out.

:07:02. > :07:06.First, Michael Schumacher, in Spain. He received a five place drop in

:07:06. > :07:12.Monaco for this incident. Was that fair? Yes, I think that was fair.

:07:12. > :07:18.Then we came here and there was a bit of a naughty moment for Pastor

:07:18. > :07:22.Maldonado. He received a 10 place grid strap. Was that fair? He could

:07:22. > :07:26.have been pulled up more. It's not the first time he did some wheel

:07:26. > :07:29.banging. He did the same last year. The stewards have a lot more data

:07:29. > :07:34.that there disposal. Despise him pleading innocence, they did think

:07:34. > :07:41.that a penalty should be applied. As we walk into one of the busiest

:07:41. > :07:46.pick names -- lanes, I guess that Lewis Hamilton will arrive thinking,

:07:46. > :07:49.Hanlon, five places for dropping somebody out of the race, 10 places

:07:49. > :07:54.for banging wheels, I go to the back because of a fuel

:07:54. > :07:58.irregularity? Will he feel hard done by? He should do, it was far

:07:58. > :08:07.too severe. We all said so. I think putting him at the back was

:08:07. > :08:11.nonsense. It was perfectly legal up to Q3. 10th, for me, was the worst

:08:11. > :08:18.possible penalty he should have received. I agree with you, I think

:08:18. > :08:21.it was way too severe. But the stewards, I think it is pretty much

:08:21. > :08:25.written, any technical irregularity which means it has not been run

:08:25. > :08:29.within regulations, that is the penalty. I think it should be

:08:29. > :08:32.rewritten. He was the quickest man in the last race and paid a huge

:08:32. > :08:36.penalty for a small mistake. They do have the right to change their

:08:36. > :08:40.mind. They have the right to look at the situation, otherwise why

:08:40. > :08:43.have them there? You seem to have your own security detail, so I will

:08:43. > :08:48.let you not to sign autographs or have any photographs because these

:08:48. > :08:52.boys will not let you. I just want to give you some kind of idea as to

:08:52. > :08:56.how busy the race track is, how tight it is. If I can clamber over

:08:56. > :09:00.the barrier, I want to show you what is happening on the track.

:09:00. > :09:04.It's all about getting a good grid position. That is a road car. You

:09:04. > :09:08.would barely get two of them side by side. What happened yesterday in

:09:08. > :09:18.qualifying? He did fight to get to the front and why was it a special

:09:18. > :09:19.

:09:19. > :09:22.Perez hit the barriers for the second time in his Monaco

:09:22. > :09:28.qualifying career. Button was left scratching his head after he was

:09:28. > :09:31.put out in Q2, blaming a lack of place -- pace from his McLaren.

:09:31. > :09:35.Michael Schumacher wowed the crowds, claiming his first pole position

:09:35. > :09:40.since his comeback. His penalty from Barcelona means that he cannot

:09:40. > :09:46.take advantage of the clear road ahead. It was good news for his

:09:46. > :09:52.team-mate, Nico Rosberg. He moves to the front row. Pole man is now

:09:52. > :09:56.Mark Webber. He put in a stunning lap. He continues to outshine his

:09:56. > :10:02.team-mate, Sebastian Vettel. Webber starts at the front. Rosberg is

:10:02. > :10:06.alongside, with Hamilton in third. Romaine Grosjean is 4th, Alonso 5th,

:10:06. > :10:12.the demoted Schumacher 6th. Massa and Raikonnen are behind. Vettel

:10:12. > :10:22.did not set a time. Button is 12, with a disappointed Paul Di Resta

:10:22. > :10:22.

:10:22. > :10:32.behind him. De la Rosa or is in front of Vergne. Sergio Perez has

:10:32. > :10:36.also changed his gearbox, and he is Look how busy it is in the pit-lane.

:10:36. > :10:40.This is not the race to come to if you have claustrophobia. Michael

:10:40. > :10:45.Schumacher was not suffering with a lack of speed yesterday. Let's

:10:45. > :10:49.still celebrate the fact that at 43 years old he was the fastest man

:10:49. > :10:54.out there. You are 41, could you imagine still doing that? Well, I

:10:54. > :10:58.was never as quick as he when I was younger, never mind now. But he was

:10:58. > :11:02.the most successful driver coming back in the history of the sport.

:11:02. > :11:06.We should not be surprised. We expect those performances. It may

:11:06. > :11:11.have taken him a bit longer, but what a place to celebrate it.

:11:11. > :11:15.will he feel when he walks into this garage? He has won in five

:11:15. > :11:23.occasions, the last one was in 2001, quite a long time ago. Surely he

:11:23. > :11:27.will be brimming with confidence? Cloud line. -- 9. He has that

:11:27. > :11:32.swagger, that so-called arrogance. He believes he can win here. Any

:11:32. > :11:37.driver that does not think he can win should not be on in the first

:11:37. > :11:40.place. Irony of ironies, there he is winning in 2001. His team-mate

:11:40. > :11:45.has actually been moved on to the front row of the grid because of

:11:45. > :11:49.his penalty. So, Michael was the Prince of the Principality

:11:49. > :11:54.yesterday. The genuine prints is here, somebody who I am sure is a

:11:54. > :12:04.close personal friend of yours? Absolutely, I often hang out with a

:12:04. > :12:10.

:12:10. > :12:14.You would have imagined with Michael being moved back and Webber

:12:14. > :12:18.starting on pole, he would have been the happiest man in Monaco

:12:18. > :12:22.last night. Have a look. Congratulations, at the front of

:12:22. > :12:29.the grid for the 10th time in your career. In your head, does that

:12:29. > :12:35.count as pole position? No. I think it was a fair battle. I came out in

:12:35. > :12:40.a position to. The last race, Michael didn't turn out, a bit of a

:12:40. > :12:44.misdemeanour to be settled in terms of positions. I will take it. We

:12:45. > :12:50.were a little bit surprised that we were that far WRAP. But it went

:12:50. > :12:53.smoothly for us, we had enough tyres to fight for the front row.

:12:53. > :12:58.We have the boats filling the place up, people standing around with

:12:58. > :13:03.cameras. You are in pole position. Does it take you back to 2010, what

:13:03. > :13:08.he described as one of your best Formula One moments? It does. A big

:13:08. > :13:12.part of the jigsaw is qualifying. We had a good day today. But you

:13:12. > :13:17.never get ahead of yourselves around here. I know what it is like

:13:17. > :13:22.to win. I know what you need to do to win. You have to be incredibly

:13:22. > :13:26.composed for two hours. Emotionally, it is worth double. When you win,

:13:26. > :13:31.it is incredible, but the points are the same. What about being on

:13:31. > :13:37.pole it wise? You can say, I had one good rent at Monaco, but two,

:13:37. > :13:41.it's nice? I have a lot of good memories. I don't particularly

:13:41. > :13:45.enjoy this stuff, to be honest. I enjoy driving in the car, but in

:13:45. > :13:50.terms of getting around it is a nightmare. A lot of glitz and

:13:50. > :14:00.glamour. That's not the Aussie grit way? In terms of when you are

:14:00. > :14:05.

:14:05. > :14:08.competing, it can be a bit of a You jumped into the harbour, an

:14:08. > :14:15.impressive celebration. If you win this, you have to think of

:14:15. > :14:20.something more impressive. What would top that? Let's get the seven

:14:20. > :14:26.laps out of the way first! It would be a good problem to have. Mark

:14:26. > :14:30.Webber, clearly not looking to curse any particular victory. He

:14:30. > :14:34.could not only win, he could make history and become the 6th man in

:14:34. > :14:38.the first six races of any Formula One season to pick up that win.

:14:38. > :14:43.That would be incredible. Let's make our way towards the Red Bull

:14:43. > :14:47.garage. The engines are roaring. That is Sebastian Vettel's car. He

:14:47. > :14:53.will know full well how important pole position is around here?

:14:53. > :14:56.will indeed. I think it is six out of a last seven here have been won

:14:56. > :15:00.from pole position. The one thing that will be niggling in his mind

:15:00. > :15:04.is that the starts have not been very good over this time at Red

:15:04. > :15:08.Bull. He knows the man beside him in second place, Nico Rosberg, has

:15:08. > :15:13.made some fantastic starts. He will be working on that with the

:15:13. > :15:18.engineers. How do you review Mark's season? Super consistent, but not

:15:18. > :15:22.even a podium. But winning today, he could lead the championship?

:15:23. > :15:29.That's how amazing this season has been. We don't have a clue how it

:15:29. > :15:33.is going to unfold. David has just said, Mark starts, they haven't

:15:33. > :15:37.been great, it could be a fascinating start to the Grand Prix.

:15:37. > :15:40.Now we can go closer. Perhaps you can try and shed light on what is

:15:40. > :15:44.going on with Sebastian Vettel? The last two races he has been really

:15:44. > :15:54.quick, and then he has struggled when he had defined the pace in

:15:54. > :15:56.

:15:56. > :15:59.For whatever reason, his car in 2012 has not been giving him the

:15:59. > :16:03.feedback that has allowed him to do amazing performances in the last

:16:03. > :16:07.couple of years. The same can be said of any of these drivers. It

:16:07. > :16:12.does seem when the car was at its peak last year, he extracted that

:16:12. > :16:18.bit extra. When it is difficult, it seems that Mark has the upper hand.

:16:18. > :16:25.That was very unusual qualifying from Sebastian yesterday. In the

:16:25. > :16:31.end, he threw in the tyre -- Tal. since -- I think his racing has

:16:31. > :16:35.been difficult. I think the car aerodynamically does not suit him.

:16:35. > :16:39.The balance of the car is not what he wants. I like the way they still

:16:39. > :16:45.play the music in here even when things are not going their way in

:16:45. > :16:47.Formula One. There is actually a potential protest hanging over Red

:16:47. > :16:51.Bull. There have been some questions about the legality of

:16:51. > :16:54.their car. But we have been used to that over the last couple of years.

:16:55. > :16:58.We have been used to seeing Sebastian Vettel at the front. He

:16:58. > :17:02.is the defending back-to-back world champion. Today he starts from

:17:03. > :17:07.ninth on the grid. Fair play to Mark Webber and also Lewis Hamilton

:17:07. > :17:10.who have both gone to great lengths to say how fantastic they think

:17:10. > :17:20.Michael Schumacher's performance was yesterday. As he told Lee

:17:20. > :17:23.

:17:23. > :17:27.McKenzie, it is nothing less than When we spoke earlier on in the

:17:27. > :17:30.week, you told me very assured that you were going to get pole position

:17:30. > :17:40.and go out and win it. Did you really believe that when you said

:17:40. > :17:41.

:17:41. > :17:46.that? Certainly, I was putting some sort of optimism in my phrases but

:17:46. > :17:51.not all of it was optimism. There was certainly a big portion of

:17:51. > :17:54.belief because the car and the character would naturally fit this

:17:54. > :18:00.track well. I know I am still capable and therefore I am even

:18:00. > :18:04.more happy to have proven this. What concerns the race, because

:18:04. > :18:08.obviously to do a lap to have clear traffic is one thing, but to do a

:18:08. > :18:13.race result when you have to pass five other people in front of me,

:18:13. > :18:17.that is another story. But it is a long race. I have a lot of

:18:17. > :18:21.experience and I hope it will pay out. We have been so close in

:18:21. > :18:25.certain moments and this year in particular, everything is going

:18:26. > :18:31.much better, much smoother and I am much more together with the car. I

:18:31. > :18:36.have not yet had the luck to show that. Unforeseen circumstances

:18:36. > :18:40.happened but it would be nice to do it here, definitely. Let's just

:18:40. > :18:43.talk about the penalty. You took the penalty after a clash with

:18:43. > :18:48.Bruno Senna in Barcelona. After that incident, you did not think it

:18:48. > :18:53.was your fault, the stewards obviously disagreed. You regret

:18:53. > :18:56.that decision now because you would be starting from the front? I have

:18:56. > :18:59.learned and it is probably experience which teaches not to

:18:59. > :19:07.worry about what you cannot change. There is no point in talking about

:19:07. > :19:12.it. In a way, I believed in that. I would start from sixth position, I

:19:12. > :19:16.can just focus on what I can do from sixth position and that is all

:19:17. > :19:21.I am thinking about. What can you do from sixth position? What

:19:22. > :19:29.factors can work? It is most likely to be a one-stop strategy so there

:19:29. > :19:35.are not many positions that you can jump the strategy so you have to

:19:35. > :19:40.work on track and on the start, my own strategy and then something

:19:40. > :19:45.from upstairs that pushes us forwards. At the end of the day,

:19:45. > :19:55.good solid points are the one that I'm going for. Anything more will

:19:55. > :19:56.

:19:56. > :20:01.be a gift. At the moment it is looking

:20:01. > :20:05.fantastic. How much would everyone here love to see him pull-out a

:20:05. > :20:12.fantastic performance if it is a one-stop performance? The fans

:20:12. > :20:17.would love that? It they would indeed. It was such a shame he had

:20:17. > :20:21.the penalty and Rules are rules but there is a will to see him after

:20:21. > :20:26.two years of difficulties really deliver that big result. There is

:20:26. > :20:30.no question he will deliver it after the great pace yesterday. It

:20:30. > :20:36.would statistically be against the rub of the bookies but we will see

:20:36. > :20:44.what happens. Michael Schumacher was no dope here this weekend, I

:20:44. > :20:52.can tell you. What can he do? He says one stop is the key, can you

:20:52. > :20:55.agree? He will say that but I am not sure that I believe him. One

:20:55. > :20:59.stop is what happened here last year but I still think two stops is

:20:59. > :21:03.the way to go. He has some big names around him, Fernando Alonso

:21:03. > :21:10.in front of him on the grid and once again, Ferrari showing a

:21:10. > :21:18.decent turn of speed. He was pushed hard by Felipe Massa yesterday.

:21:18. > :21:22.was. He is a previous poles are to here. He was pushing Fernando hard.

:21:22. > :21:26.Fernando always digs deep but he has to dig very deep to be the

:21:26. > :21:30.number one Ferrari around this racetrack. Eddie, we have spoken

:21:30. > :21:35.about the struggles which Red Bull have had an also Ferrari have had a

:21:35. > :21:38.pretty desperate start the season endear we arrive here with Fernando

:21:38. > :21:42.Alonso and Sebastian Vettel joint leaders in a Formula One world

:21:42. > :21:46.championship? We have been dealt up such an array of different

:21:46. > :21:50.surprises this year, it is probably no surprise. Alonso is probably

:21:50. > :21:54.sitting at home saying, I have done nothing and I am right there at the

:21:54. > :22:00.top. If I can make this car better, who knows, I might get the

:22:00. > :22:05.championship? One man we must talk about his Lewis Hamilton. He starts

:22:05. > :22:12.third and he started third here in 2008 and won the Grand Prix. Surely

:22:12. > :22:15.he must be on the verge of winning his first Grand Prix of the season.

:22:15. > :22:20.He has a two pole positions. McLaren have a great record around

:22:20. > :22:24.Monte Carlo. He is right there, only a couple of tenths from pole

:22:25. > :22:27.position. He is a good starter. Lewis leads the way in the most

:22:27. > :22:31.number of overtakes the season and at the same time he says

:22:31. > :22:36.consistency is the key, he has to take his time and pick up the easy

:22:36. > :22:39.points. I think that statistic may have some bearing on the fact that

:22:40. > :22:46.he started at the back a couple of times because of penalties. I think

:22:46. > :22:53.he's just a great racer. If anyone who turns the tampon in terms of

:22:53. > :22:59.excitement, for me it is him. -- turned the tap on. We are gearing

:22:59. > :23:03.up for race which Lewis Hamilton always loves, he is in third.

:23:03. > :23:08.Jenson Button was struggling in qualifying yesterday. He starts

:23:08. > :23:16.further back in 12th. A busy afternoon for both those drivers

:23:16. > :23:26.making our job look easy, right? Thank you for joining us live on

:23:26. > :23:37.

:23:37. > :23:47.Lights, camera, action! Can you hear me? Yes, I can. One minute to

:23:47. > :23:48.

:23:48. > :23:53.on air, one minute. Did you hear that? Yes, one minute. Royal title.

:23:53. > :23:59.Have you got your opening line? have not got a clue. And my

:23:59. > :24:09.starting? You, you why the presenter. Jenson, I am coming to

:24:09. > :24:11.

:24:11. > :24:15.you in a second. 5, 4, 3, 2, one. Ku Jenson. Welcome to the pit lane,

:24:15. > :24:20.I am here with DC and we are back for some more action after a couple

:24:21. > :24:26.of weeks off on holiday. Where have you been? Just so you know, David

:24:26. > :24:33.and Jenson cannot hear me but they can hear you. We can chat. This

:24:33. > :24:38.body work is beautiful. Look at this paint. Jenson, we have got a

:24:38. > :24:45.surprise guest in the paddock. Keep talking. We have a special guest.

:24:45. > :24:50.We do? We do have a very special guest. Get the close-up on Mark.

:24:50. > :24:56.Well done, good direction. That is nice. This is a new thing for me

:24:56. > :25:01.especially when people are talking in my ear. You have to tell him you

:25:01. > :25:05.are so proud to be working with the best driver in the paddock, what is

:25:06. > :25:15.it like for him? What is it like working with the best driver in

:25:15. > :25:21.Formula One? Excuse me while I just step away! I have never worked with

:25:21. > :25:30.the best driver! Let me come back. If Jenson, you are clearly sucking

:25:30. > :25:37.here. We have to wrap it up. But I want to keep talking, I want to

:25:37. > :25:46.keep talking! Follow me, cameras. You have to close it out! Closes up,

:25:46. > :25:52.mate. We have just brought you out here to show you it is rare quiet

:25:52. > :26:00.at this time of night. Martin Whitmarsh, how are you? He has to

:26:00. > :26:05.use the microphone. Are you excited? Jenson, apologised to the

:26:05. > :26:09.viewers for the slight break-up on the camera. I have to apologise for

:26:09. > :26:18.the slight break-up you might have experienced. You have got a full

:26:18. > :26:28.face of Martin which is always good. 6, 5, 4... That would be a great

:26:28. > :26:34.

:26:34. > :26:41.answer but we have to go! Walk Shall we go and show you the

:26:41. > :26:50.drivers'' rooms. This is Lewis's rumour over here. You have ended up

:26:50. > :26:58.with camera one caught in the shot. That is Lewis's room and that is...

:26:58. > :27:04.That was the Grand Prix. Exactly. Are there you have it. Good job,

:27:04. > :27:11.guys, good job. I do not want to do that every game.

:27:11. > :27:16.Jenson, when you retire in the next year also, will you be taking on

:27:16. > :27:22.the same job? To be fair, Lewis, this is making me realise I want to

:27:22. > :27:27.race for longer. Me, too. This is so hard! Jenson, the nicest thing

:27:28. > :27:34.we did for you is keep Eddie Jordan out of the programme. This is your

:27:34. > :27:44.worst nightmare, I am back to haunt you. Can we fade-out Eddie Jordan?

:27:44. > :27:46.

:27:46. > :27:50.I think Eddie will be relieved to know his job is safe for now. It is

:27:50. > :27:54.loud and Monaco. The cars are making their way out to the grid.

:27:54. > :28:04.That was Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button leading -- leaving at the

:28:04. > :28:08.same time. They have had a lot of issues in nice open pit lanes in

:28:08. > :28:13.recent weeks. They want to make sure they do not have a repeat of

:28:13. > :28:17.any of the little finger problems they have had in recent races,

:28:17. > :28:21.particularly on the pit stops. The stops are so important in this race

:28:21. > :28:26.because you can afford to give nothing away. Every vital second is

:28:26. > :28:30.so valuable. With 27 minutes to the start of the race we can see the

:28:30. > :28:34.cars making their way down to the start of the grid. You have been

:28:34. > :28:39.here for a long time. I think the first thing people have to

:28:39. > :28:43.understand, as a team, they just want to see the first corner and

:28:43. > :28:48.the first lap concluded in safety and the cars get around. Then they

:28:48. > :28:52.settle down and we get the argy- bargy. The journey from the grid to

:28:52. > :28:57.the first corner is very short and that may well play into Mark's best

:28:58. > :29:01.hand. There was Nico Rosberg stopping in his pit box. For many

:29:01. > :29:07.people this is what Monaco is about, a chance to have some fun, have

:29:07. > :29:12.some drinks and see some decent cars as well. That is what Monaco

:29:12. > :29:17.is about. Serious racing and the most demanding circuit like you can

:29:17. > :29:22.ever imagine. Then there is all the glitter. Just down the road we have

:29:22. > :29:25.the Cannes Film Festival. They'll come for the weekend. It is a

:29:25. > :29:32.remarkable place. I do not want to keep going on about it but there is

:29:32. > :29:35.no other place like it. I am standing two feet from Eddie Waring

:29:35. > :29:41.ear defenders and I'm still struggling to hear what he is

:29:41. > :29:45.saying. There was Jean Todt, the race director. He had some

:29:45. > :29:49.difficult questions to answer a couple of weeks ago but no such

:29:49. > :29:56.questions today. We have seen a fair bit of Nico Rosberg gearing up

:29:56. > :30:01.for the race, Howard you rate his chances? He is a huge star to. He

:30:01. > :30:05.won his first race this season. He knows what is required to be done.

:30:05. > :30:09.He certainly must be one of the favourites getting into the first

:30:09. > :30:14.corner. If you can just get into the first corner first, it is a

:30:14. > :30:21.huge egg -- advantage. What did you think of Felipe Massa's

:30:21. > :30:26.performance? I think everybody, every journalist has written him

:30:26. > :30:28.off. They do not see him as part of the Ferrari team next year so if he

:30:28. > :30:32.is going to do something, please make sure you start it here and

:30:32. > :30:42.make sure you get some good points for your team and yourself, more

:30:42. > :30:44.

:30:44. > :30:48.How hard is it to operate down there? Everybody is busy. Every

:30:48. > :30:51.sponsor you have ever had wants to be on the grid, if you don't have a

:30:51. > :30:55.pass for then you are in trouble. It's a real pecking order. You have

:30:55. > :31:01.mixed emotion. The driver wants to be so far away from these people.

:31:01. > :31:08.And yet the people want their piece of the pie. Possibly rightly so.

:31:08. > :31:14.It's just a complicated situation. I think the crowds, the closed

:31:14. > :31:19.lists, it is a cacophony. I have a sneaking suspicion you never

:31:19. > :31:23.struggled for passes? You might be surprised. They are like gold dust

:31:23. > :31:27.in this principality. How much was that man vindicated after

:31:28. > :31:33.qualifying? Because he had his critics. Including David Coulthard,

:31:33. > :31:38.I notice. But he, David, I and everybody were hugely impressed.

:31:38. > :31:42.All of the places that you have to drag the car around, there is no

:31:42. > :31:46.compromise here. For him to get that, I was used to be impressed.

:31:46. > :31:50.Monaco is a magical and special place, but we are about to get down

:31:50. > :31:54.to the serious side of things. David is going to head to degrade.

:31:54. > :31:59.There he is, the boss of Mercedes. All of the talk at the moment is

:31:59. > :32:02.about what is happening between Mercedes, what is happening with,

:32:02. > :32:11.indeed, the Concorde Agreement, that remains to be seen. They are

:32:11. > :32:14.the people that are basically holding things up. The Concorde

:32:14. > :32:20.Agreement is what holds everybody together. Mercedes have been

:32:20. > :32:23.questioning it and they have not signed it. McLaren are happy. The

:32:23. > :32:28.chairman of the Formula One Teams' Association, today he has his eyes

:32:28. > :32:33.on Lewis Hamilton. A fantastic lap yesterday. He's not driving in the

:32:33. > :32:36.way he was a couple of years ago, an all-out full effort. But he's

:32:36. > :32:40.still getting good lap times and showing that consistency can pay

:32:40. > :32:45.off. In his mind, he must be thinking, I can start my season

:32:45. > :32:48.with a big flourish. I can get to the top of the championship. As far

:32:48. > :32:52.as he is concerned, he is a brilliant starter. He will be

:32:52. > :32:56.looking to try to squeeze on the inside of Mark Webber. If he can

:32:56. > :33:03.get away without a crash or without damaging his car, he could be gone.

:33:04. > :33:08.Away from everybody else. The Force India car struggled slightly. We

:33:08. > :33:16.were expecting something a bit better. Paul Dorest there is

:33:16. > :33:20.accompanied by Nico Hulkenberg, who starts 14th? Hulkenberg was top of

:33:20. > :33:25.the list for a while, I'm disappointed with their qualifying.

:33:25. > :33:29.Nico Rosberg, being pushed onto the grid. He had a pole position and

:33:29. > :33:34.managed to turn it into a win. How hard it is it from second place, to

:33:34. > :33:39.take the lead at the first corner? Believe it or not, he is on the

:33:39. > :33:43.good side. When people come to do their qualifying lap, they are

:33:43. > :33:48.often near to where they are about to start now. Not quite, but near

:33:48. > :33:52.to it. He will have the side with more grip, and he has better vision

:33:52. > :33:57.going into the first corner. Madness of Monaco, there is nowhere

:33:57. > :34:00.like it. Throughout that crowd, remarkably, they managed to get 24

:34:00. > :34:04.Formula One cars into the right place, get the drivers out of the

:34:04. > :34:08.cars and get ready for the race. Somewhere amongst it all, somewhere

:34:08. > :34:12.near the Red Bull team, is David Coulthard. Back on the grid in

:34:12. > :34:17.Monaco? I thought I was going to have to fill the pole position.

:34:17. > :34:21.Mark Webber is one of the last cars to arrive. You can see he is in the

:34:21. > :34:26.car, and doing his head restraints. He is one of the taller drivers,

:34:26. > :34:30.big shoulders, he's not able to get out of the car without removing it.

:34:30. > :34:33.A wonderful setting for him. If we could bring you around here, as

:34:33. > :34:38.Mark is getting out of the car, just put the camera over the

:34:38. > :34:43.shoulder of that lady. Can you focus down there? It's an

:34:43. > :34:46.incredibly short run to the first corner. Mark has historically not

:34:46. > :34:50.made great starts with a scowl. But he doesn't have to run at all the

:34:50. > :34:56.way to the corner. He just needs to get into first gear, get seconded

:34:56. > :35:02.here and then have track position. He will be focused. I'm hoping to

:35:02. > :35:08.get a word with him. There he is, over the back of these engineers.

:35:08. > :35:15.We will get a word before he gets too far into it. We will give him a

:35:15. > :35:19.moment to catch his breath. It's quite quiet down here? Yeah, it's a

:35:19. > :35:23.busy Grand Prix grid. It's always the same. We are looking forward to

:35:23. > :35:30.the race. A short run to the first corner, I've just been explaining.

:35:30. > :35:34.You need to be in a good position when you hit second gear? That's it,

:35:34. > :35:39.we've had a referendum in Short starts over the time. But I'm

:35:39. > :35:45.looking forward to repeating 2010, get a good run and then control the

:35:45. > :35:49.race. He seems pretty calm. I do remember my heart rate used to go

:35:49. > :35:53.off the scale as I prepared for the start of the Monaco Grand Prix.

:35:53. > :35:58.It's especially important at the start. If you drop it there, you

:35:58. > :36:03.are in trouble. The second man on the grid, Nico Rosberg. I don't see

:36:03. > :36:10.him anywhere. Let's have a good luck. Nick Fry, he is the managing

:36:10. > :36:18.director of the team. Here is a man we don't hear from often. He's

:36:18. > :36:22.doing some man hugs. Sorry to interrupt. We don't get many words

:36:22. > :36:31.from you. You have been part of the McLaren team as an owner for how

:36:31. > :36:35.many years? 24 years, more now. must be so proud of the driver

:36:35. > :36:41.line-up, that you have? At the review. McLaren are the most

:36:41. > :36:48.winning team around here, any party is planned for later? Anything can

:36:48. > :36:57.happen, but we have a chance. see if we can see any of the

:36:57. > :37:02.drivers. It's so busy. Give her as Spin around and come back with me.

:37:02. > :37:06.I have just spotted someone I would like to have a word with. Whether

:37:06. > :37:11.they start in pole position or not, it absolutely was pole position for

:37:11. > :37:15.the Mercedes Grand Prix team. We have the motorsport boss of

:37:15. > :37:19.Mercedes Benz. We were just saying, you might not get to start on pole

:37:19. > :37:24.position, but it was the fastest driver, car and engine combination

:37:24. > :37:29.yesterday. You must feel vindicated in your decision to bring him back.

:37:29. > :37:33.People expected so much because of his amazing results in the past?

:37:33. > :37:37.took a while. The car was good enough, then Michael delivered. Of

:37:37. > :37:41.course it is a shame that he has been put five places back. But that

:37:41. > :37:46.is what we have to accept. But it was great, a great pleasure for the

:37:46. > :37:52.team, well deserved from everybody. Your starts have been pretty handy.

:37:52. > :37:56.We know that Mark has been a little bit tardy sometimes. What does your

:37:56. > :37:59.simulation say? Can Nico Rosberg lead us into the first corner?

:37:59. > :38:04.we normally start good. But everything is different in Monaco,

:38:04. > :38:10.of course. I hope we can get him at the start and then control the race.

:38:10. > :38:18.This is the plan. I'm not sure if we can achieve it. Good stuff. All

:38:18. > :38:23.of the best. We know this is a crazy grid. The bold and beautiful.

:38:23. > :38:28.I am losing Ian, stay with me. Do you ever get the feeling that you

:38:28. > :38:34.are swimming against the stream? My whole career, I have felt like

:38:34. > :38:44.that! Look at this, we are going down past... There is a popular boy,

:38:44. > :38:54.romaine Grosjean. A quick word in French? I am very happy to be here,

:38:54. > :38:58.

:38:58. > :39:03.I have a good car. I'm sure I can Here his Ferrari. I think we might

:39:03. > :39:12.find somebody with the name of Eddie Jordan. He has a fan taking a

:39:12. > :39:16.picture. Who is it? It is Mr Ron Howard! You could say we are on the

:39:16. > :39:20.grid in Monaco, who says Happy Days Like This? You are making this

:39:20. > :39:24.movie about a motor racing story, what made you change from that side

:39:24. > :39:29.of the camera to weigh one now? I never really had the actor

:39:29. > :39:34.personality, I always wanted to tell the whole story. It has the

:39:34. > :39:39.racing, it has fantastic characters and I get to go into orbit, as the

:39:39. > :39:44.director, not just concentrate on one thing. You have won two Oscars.

:39:44. > :39:49.This is a real life part, a great story. Why this one? The characters,

:39:49. > :39:52.again. They offer so many surprises. It's a great screenplay. When I

:39:52. > :40:00.read it, I didn't know much about Formula One and I was knocked out

:40:00. > :40:04.by the script. He's a great rider. You get drama, surprises and then

:40:04. > :40:08.there is the unbelievable cinematic possibility, capturing your role,

:40:08. > :40:15.Catrin Formula One. Particularly in the 70s, a pretty reckless and sexy

:40:15. > :40:20.time. Well, Apollo 13, how much did you know about going into outer

:40:20. > :40:24.space? I know more about Formula One! What are you trying to achieve

:40:24. > :40:29.for the fans? Often you cannot transfer a sporting story onto

:40:29. > :40:32.cinema? It's a huge challenge. I want people who love Formula One to

:40:32. > :40:38.know that we respected it, we captured it, we used every tool at

:40:38. > :40:41.our disposal to try to put you in 1976. But I also want people that

:40:41. > :40:46.don't know much about it to really appreciate these characters, look

:40:46. > :40:50.at the sport and say, well, I think I have been missing something. If I

:40:50. > :40:55.can accomplish those two things, I think I have done my job. Maybe you

:40:55. > :40:59.might tell us when it is likely to be released? We are looking for

:40:59. > :41:04.spring of next year. We finished three days ago, this is my first

:41:04. > :41:08.weekend off. Well, what a place to come to afford it. Thank you very

:41:08. > :41:13.much. The great, the one and only, Ron Howard. Thank you so much.

:41:13. > :41:18.Thrilled, really. I'm a fan. will always be Richie Cunningham

:41:18. > :41:24.today, just like Will Smith will always be the fresh Prince Of Bel-

:41:24. > :41:28.Air. It was a fantastic idea for somebody to make sure that it

:41:28. > :41:34.happens at the same time as the Cannes film festival. This could be

:41:34. > :41:40.a blockbuster movie of a race. This is how you can see it on the BBC.

:41:41. > :41:44.As well as on television, there are all kinds of options, including the

:41:44. > :41:48.circuit tracker. You can see how they get on. There is the on-board

:41:48. > :41:53.feed. You can ride on board with various drivers. Through the tunnel,

:41:53. > :41:56.down past the harbour. There is also the pit lane feed. That is

:41:56. > :42:01.just team radio and drivers going in and out of the pits. It's a

:42:01. > :42:08.different way to watch, but equally fun. There are all kinds of things

:42:08. > :42:12.happening on the website. Of course, the iPlayer as well. There is the

:42:13. > :42:17.grid. David Coulthard has come to join me. Amazing, you even rocked

:42:17. > :42:20.out a bit of French? I did. I panicked, thinking he was not going

:42:20. > :42:30.to talk to me, I asked for some words in French and he answered in

:42:30. > :42:34.English. After 18 years, I should speak a little bit. Here he is,

:42:34. > :42:41.romaine Grosjean. If he wants to move forward, he has to do some

:42:41. > :42:46.overtaking. We have a DRS, is it conceivable that they can use it?

:42:46. > :42:55.It is, just as you exit there chicane, that's a good place to

:42:55. > :42:58.activate it. Just before La Rascasse you can deploy it. The

:42:58. > :43:03.finishing straight, of course it is not actually straight, but it will

:43:03. > :43:07.give them a chance. If you can get your car alongside, left or right,

:43:07. > :43:13.the other driver is obliged to maintain his position, it is not

:43:13. > :43:20.safe otherwise. If you ban him into the barrier, it will bounce back

:43:20. > :43:22.into you and your race is over. goes the helmet of the seven-times

:43:22. > :43:26.Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher, who starts in sixth

:43:26. > :43:32.after a five plays penalty. A bit of a lottery last time. Are we

:43:32. > :43:37.expecting a similar race? The big difference is that overtaking is so

:43:37. > :43:40.difficult. In Barcelona, if you had a 1.5 second of setting performance,

:43:40. > :43:43.you could overtake full stops here they are predicting at least three

:43:43. > :43:48.seconds. That's a lot of laughter time advantage before you can

:43:48. > :43:54.easily overtake. Anyone that remembers the great battles here,

:43:54. > :43:59.you can be a lot faster than the car in front, if he positions

:43:59. > :44:02.himself carefully it makes it tricky. Fernando Alonso even looks

:44:02. > :44:06.cool in the sun, with red sunglasses on. That is not easy.

:44:06. > :44:10.It's not, but he is such a cool character. His commitment, I said

:44:10. > :44:16.it before, the double world champion already in his earlier

:44:16. > :44:20.career with Renault, but he is relentless. All credit for Felipe

:44:20. > :44:25.Massa for pushing him so hard in qualifying, it's not easy to drive

:44:25. > :44:35.a quick lap around here. Let's find out how the drivers are feeling.

:44:35. > :44:36.

:44:36. > :44:41.Paul Dorest death started 14th. -- How are the nervous? All right at

:44:41. > :44:45.the moment. Everybody had the chance to be one wet start on

:44:45. > :44:51.Thursday afternoon. We will see. But we have to go very aggressive

:44:51. > :44:57.to try to go forward. Overtaking here is not the way. It's very

:44:57. > :45:01.risky. Maybe there is some rain that could play into our hands.

:45:01. > :45:04.Well, he would like to have a great race. They would like to not stop

:45:04. > :45:09.to match. It's so hard to overtake you want to spend as little time in

:45:09. > :45:13.the pits as possible. The quickest way to finish the race is a two-

:45:13. > :45:17.stop strategy. Anything beyond a grid seven or eight will seriously

:45:17. > :45:21.consider just one stop. Let's see if he is one of those guys.

:45:21. > :45:31.only thing for Mark Webber to worry about is being overtaken. Here is

:45:31. > :45:39.

:45:39. > :45:44.how he ended up at the front for circuit, the jewel in the crown of

:45:44. > :45:48.the season. We are on board with the pole sitter, Mark Webber.

:45:48. > :45:58.Maximum acceleration up the steep climb to Casino Square. Threading

:45:58. > :46:02.through the Armco barriers. Supreme as he drops down the hill towards

:46:02. > :46:09.Mirabeau. Locks the inside wheel, first gear, short shift to second

:46:09. > :46:14.and then again, maximum lock on the steering as he goes round the old

:46:14. > :46:18.Loews Hairpin. Nice and steady and then even better on the exit of

:46:18. > :46:23.Portier. He disappears into the darkness of the tunnel. And let's

:46:23. > :46:29.just say, blinded by the light as he approaches the braking point to

:46:29. > :46:34.the chicane. All most cases the barrier at the apex. Then down to

:46:34. > :46:40.one of the most challenging corners, Tabac. Coming back towards the wall

:46:40. > :46:46.as he approaches the last chicane. Chums the kerb on the exit. Then

:46:46. > :46:54.the run down to the famous Rascasse corner, scene of many a party. The

:46:54. > :46:58.last tone, Anthony Noghes. Open the D ers, look at the lap delta

:46:58. > :47:03.improving. He may not be the fastest man but he ends up in pole

:47:03. > :47:09.position. Yes, the second fastest man is the man at the front for

:47:09. > :47:17.this race remember, the last pole he won the race. No podium this

:47:17. > :47:21.year for Mark Webber. Eddie, can Mark Webber do it? For me, the

:47:21. > :47:26.start is all-important. For all of them but particularly for Mark

:47:26. > :47:30.Webber. And Nico Rosberg is the man in the box seat. Do you think it is

:47:30. > :47:34.Nico or Lewis who will give mark the biggest threat? It is a matter

:47:34. > :47:38.of toss a coin here. You do not know how they will emerge at the

:47:38. > :47:41.first corner or how they will complete the first lap. That will

:47:41. > :47:45.be the great indicator. My guess is that Mark will be quite lucky

:47:45. > :47:51.because it is a short run to the first corner. Should we keep our

:47:51. > :47:55.eye on the Lotuses? I think the first three habit in the back,

:47:55. > :48:00.myself, but we have been served up all sorts this year, there should

:48:00. > :48:06.be no exception. The grid girls are leaving the great. Nico Rosberg is

:48:06. > :48:11.calming himself down. He came into this season having never won a race

:48:11. > :48:15.in Formula One. He has won one now. Here we go, live, in high-

:48:15. > :48:20.definition with David Coulthard and Ben Edwards, the 2012 Monaco Grand

:48:20. > :48:24.Prix. For us, a reminder of how this place is so special. For the

:48:24. > :48:34.24 men on the track, a reminder of a lifetime of dedication, effort

:48:34. > :49:08.

:49:08. > :49:18.Do you like the cars money has Coup d'etat wins the Monaco Grand

:49:18. > :49:18.

:49:18. > :50:40.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 82 seconds

:50:40. > :50:46.driver to win at Monaco, the most prestigious Grand Prix on the

:50:46. > :50:49.calendar and the ultimate test of skill and concentration. Round 6 at

:50:49. > :50:53.the Formula One world championship takes place amid the apartment

:50:53. > :50:59.blocks, hotels, restaurants and shops of Monte Carlo, a track which

:50:59. > :51:05.has changed very little since the first event here back in 1929. Even

:51:05. > :51:13.then, because -- circuit was considered to tight and small for

:51:13. > :51:18.Grand Prix cars. Now, it remains the slowest, tightest, least

:51:18. > :51:22.forgiving circuit on the calendar. 78 laps of absolute accuracy

:51:22. > :51:27.required and perhaps the odd slice of luck as well. Remember, Hamilton

:51:27. > :51:31.won this race back in 2008, despite hitting the barrier and getting a

:51:31. > :51:36.puncture. It has always been a race of drama and it is likely to be the

:51:36. > :51:41.same, David? Yes, if anyone manages to complete the race without

:51:41. > :51:47.touching the barrier, he was probably not trying hard enough. Or

:51:47. > :51:52.there is a management will shunt up the first corner. -- a monumental

:51:52. > :51:56.shunt. Eventually, as the cars are changing and especially now with

:51:56. > :52:00.the huge challenge of the changing fuel load, you will inevitably make

:52:00. > :52:04.a small misjudgment somewhere. One saving grace is despite this being

:52:04. > :52:08.one of the longest races in terms of time, the actual fuel

:52:08. > :52:13.requirement being such a small lap will be a lot less. They will only

:52:13. > :52:16.go off the grid with one hand and 30 kilos rather than the peak which

:52:16. > :52:23.would be 160. That gives 30 kilos less mass to move around the

:52:23. > :52:27.racetrack. That makes the Cardle easier to move and also low gear

:52:27. > :52:31.ratios improving acceleration. Fernando Alonso has a different

:52:31. > :52:37.crash helmet this weekend with gold on it. It is to be auctioned off

:52:37. > :52:40.after the event. It records various parts of his career, the number of

:52:40. > :52:46.victories and pole positions and the fact this is the 70th Monaco

:52:46. > :52:50.Grand Prix this weekend. Two-times winner on this circuit, Fernando

:52:50. > :52:55.Alonso. Nico Rosberg, he not only lives in Monaco, he grew up here.

:52:55. > :52:59.He went to school and Monaco and he finds himself on the front row of

:52:59. > :53:05.the race for the first time for him. It is very much his best-ever

:53:05. > :53:09.qualifying performance. Only his third over front row start. He had

:53:09. > :53:14.pole position in China and went on to take the victory there. It is

:53:14. > :53:18.Mark Webber who starts on pole position. His second pole position

:53:18. > :53:23.here in Monaco. He absolutely loves this place and he would dearly

:53:23. > :53:30.wished to take another victory. He managed it back in his earlier

:53:30. > :53:33.career, in the junior category is, for Miller 3,000. He won in 2001

:53:33. > :53:38.from pole position with fastest lap. We will see if he can do it again

:53:38. > :53:42.this time. The grid line-up does see Mark Webber on pole position in

:53:42. > :53:47.the Red Bull. Alongside him is Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes. Lewis

:53:47. > :53:57.Hamilton starts and third where he was in 2008. Romain Grosjean is

:53:57. > :54:34.

:54:34. > :54:38.next. Then the heavy weights, up. We will see some action down on

:54:38. > :54:43.the grid now. There has been some controversy this weekend already on

:54:43. > :54:47.a technical feature. Let's bring Gary in on this. There is a bit of

:54:47. > :54:54.a story, I believe, about the Red Bull car and the aerodynamics at

:54:54. > :54:59.the rear? Yes, they have a little ducked in front of the rear tyre.

:54:59. > :55:03.It is a hole which allows some air through. The question is, does it

:55:03. > :55:07.constitute an impervious surface? The underfloor of the car is not

:55:07. > :55:11.supposed to have any holes in it. They have a whole. There is a bit

:55:11. > :55:16.of a question mark about it. Ferrari have something very similar

:55:16. > :55:22.but they have a slot to the side of it so it is not a whole, it is a

:55:22. > :55:27.continuous Profile, as such, as do Sauber. There is a bit of

:55:27. > :55:32.controversy which will not be over until late tonight. We will see.

:55:32. > :55:36.Cars move away on the formation lap. A bit slow moving away was Romain

:55:36. > :55:42.Grosjean. Kimi Raikkonen is wearing a different crash helmet today, a

:55:42. > :55:47.James Hunt style crash helmet so black colours. The tyres being used

:55:47. > :55:52.are the soft and the super soft. The yellow writing indicates the

:55:52. > :55:56.soft which is the heart of the two compounds. Then intermediates and

:55:56. > :56:02.wet. Talking of which, we have heard there could be rain half-an-

:56:02. > :56:06.hour or more into the race. There is a bit of cloud around. Track

:56:06. > :56:10.temperature is 36 degrees. Sebastian Vettel and Fernando

:56:10. > :56:17.Alonso are tied at the top of the championship. Hamilton is not far

:56:17. > :56:23.behind. Jenson Button will need to do something special if he is to

:56:23. > :56:30.move up from 12th on the grid. Down at the tail-end of the points, a

:56:30. > :56:35.certain Michael Schumacher, only two points. He could desperately do

:56:35. > :56:41.with a good result. As we know, he was fastest in qualifying yesterday

:56:41. > :56:44.but he starts in sixth place. Just riding on board the Lotus here. In

:56:44. > :56:50.the Constructors' Championship, it is Red Bull who lead with McLaren

:56:50. > :56:57.not bar -- not far behind and Lotus in third. Gary, presumably most of

:56:57. > :57:02.the frontrunners are on the softer tyre? Yes, the super soft tyre. The

:57:02. > :57:05.guy who leads into the first corner has the best opportunity because

:57:05. > :57:09.they will have clean air. If you are behind somebody else with so

:57:09. > :57:14.much turbulence going on, it really does affect your car. You have to

:57:14. > :57:18.struggle with that to begin with. It will be a lottery. It is all

:57:18. > :57:23.about a clean start. They are all on the softer tyre but Sebastian

:57:23. > :57:27.Vettel has decided to go for the harder tyre to start the race. He

:57:27. > :57:32.had that option because he did not run in the top 10 in qualifying. He

:57:32. > :57:35.has gone on the prime tyres and Button doing the same thing, the

:57:35. > :57:45.harder of the two compounds being chosen by Sebastian Vettel and

:57:45. > :57:51.Jenson Button. Mark Webber has his car in place. It is only 140 metres

:57:51. > :58:01.to the first corner here. They will do that in 4.5 seconds, getting up

:58:01. > :58:24.

:58:24. > :58:29.to 110 mph before getting up on the under way! Webber gets off the line

:58:29. > :58:35.beautifully this time. We have a shunt, Grosjean got hit by somebody.

:58:35. > :58:39.He was hit by Michael Schumacher. He spun around. The rest of the

:58:39. > :58:45.field have successfully negotiated their way round. Let's see if they

:58:45. > :58:50.will put out the safety car. It looks like he can recover. Up front

:58:50. > :58:57.is Mark Webber who leads Rosberg in second, Hamilton third and then the

:58:57. > :59:01.two Ferraris bearing down on the McLaren of Hamilton. Massa is

:59:01. > :59:05.behind Alonso, then it is Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Michael

:59:05. > :59:12.Schumacher with that contact with Grosjean losing out on some ground.

:59:12. > :59:16.Jenson Button his way down in 14th place. He is behind Kovalainen in

:59:16. > :59:20.the Caterham. In the confusion of the first corner, Jenson Button's

:59:20. > :59:25.poor qualifying position has seen him drop further back. But Mark

:59:25. > :59:30.Webber will be breathing a sigh of relief. He got the start hook up

:59:30. > :59:34.completely. This is the point where the drivers will start to breed.

:59:34. > :59:40.Yes, Mark Webber has made a perfect getaway on a circuit which he loves

:59:40. > :59:46.so much. He leads this race. Second place for Rosberg. Hamilton in

:59:46. > :59:50.third. We have a car of already. It is Maldonado. He has had a horrible

:59:50. > :59:56.weekend. The star of Barcelona is out of the race already by the

:59:56. > :59:59.looks of things. That is Grosjean's car at the first turn being

:59:59. > :00:04.manhandled out of the way as the leader comes through and the safety

:00:05. > :00:10.car is on the track. Everybody will have to back it off. The safety car

:00:10. > :00:14.is a regular feature of the Monaco circuit. Into the pits is de la

:00:14. > :00:21.Rosa with no rear wing. It looks like he may have been the man hit

:00:21. > :00:25.by a Maldonado. But safety car is for the Maldonado incident. The

:00:25. > :00:31.marshals were successfully recovering Grosjean's car. We get a

:00:31. > :00:41.replay of the start. Mark Webber breathe a sigh of relief. Grosjean

:00:41. > :00:48.

:00:48. > :00:52.is touching wheels with the Ferrari. those things in Monte Carlo. The

:00:52. > :00:59.barrier funnels the cars in. Romain Grosjean moves in front of Michael,

:00:59. > :01:06.there was nowhere for him to go. That is the hazard. Kamui Kobayashi

:01:06. > :01:12.jumped into the air, that will not have that his suspension any good.

:01:12. > :01:16.He bounced into Jenson Button. explains Jenson Button's poor start.

:01:16. > :01:26.The hit had already happened between Pastor Maldonado and Pedro

:01:26. > :01:33.de la Rosa. Pastor Maldonado hoisted into the air. We can see

:01:33. > :01:38.the clouds they are talking about! Apparently, it is raining slightly.

:01:38. > :01:42.There will be a little further action this afternoon. The first

:01:42. > :01:47.safety car did not take long. The Ferrari cars were side by side, but

:01:47. > :01:54.they just about gave each of the room. Fernando Alonso just about

:01:54. > :02:03.stayed in front. It must be a huge sigh of relief if you never get

:02:03. > :02:09.that. RADIO: What happened? I did not go anywhere. Lewis Hamilton

:02:09. > :02:12.inquiring what went wrong with the launch. He feels he prepared

:02:12. > :02:19.everything well, and when he has gone through the sequence, he feels

:02:19. > :02:23.he did not go anywhere. Clearly, his focus was on improving his

:02:23. > :02:33.third row quits lot. He knows the importance of trying to get the

:02:33. > :02:34.

:02:34. > :02:40.jump at the start. Right now, this changes the strategy. You lose less

:02:40. > :02:45.fuel around here, so they have a low level of fuel. They are saving

:02:45. > :02:52.even more now. Gary, how will this affect strategy in terms of the

:02:52. > :03:00.number of laps they can do? RADIO: A lot of debris, reset my tyre

:03:00. > :03:08.pressures. They are looking good, we are looking at them constantly.

:03:08. > :03:14.Gary, give us your thoughts on how this affects the strategy. These

:03:14. > :03:19.super soft tyres, it is easy to overheat them. If you have to keep

:03:19. > :03:23.pushing, that increases. This will give them an opportunity to balance

:03:24. > :03:29.the temperatures. We could see a longer run on them than would have

:03:30. > :03:37.been happening Norman A. Lewis Hamilton is defending from Fernando

:03:37. > :03:46.Alonso. Mark Webber, Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, fully paid --

:03:46. > :03:53.Fernando Alonso. The DRS is enabled. I was caught out by that restart. I

:03:53. > :04:00.did not see the fact that the safety car had turned its light off.

:04:00. > :04:04.But we are racing. Sebastian Vettel, up to sixth place. He could be

:04:04. > :04:10.attempting to do a one stop. He has the advantage of the more durable

:04:10. > :04:17.tyre. He has benefited from the difficulties at the start.

:04:17. > :04:24.other driver who has started well, Paul di Resta, 11th place. His

:04:24. > :04:31.team-mate, Nico Hulkenberg, has gained one place. They are in the

:04:31. > :04:35.group that is behind Michael Schumacher, the Ferrari cars.

:04:35. > :04:41.Fernando Alonso is chasing Kimi Raikkonen, apologies, Lewis

:04:41. > :04:46.Hamilton. Kimi Raikkonen is behind them and Sebastian Vettel. He has

:04:46. > :04:55.got work to do. Mark Webber leads the race. He is trying to stretch

:04:55. > :04:59.out an advantage over Nico Rosberg. Michael Schumacher still in eighth

:04:59. > :05:05.place, Nico Hulkenberg in ninth place, Bruno Senna in tenth place.

:05:05. > :05:15.He also got through the debris of the first corner. Paul di Resta,

:05:15. > :05:15.

:05:15. > :05:20.11th place. You mentioned Heikki Kovalainen, a great first lap.

:05:20. > :05:26.they were trying to make two stops, and they need to make the tyres

:05:26. > :05:30.last until lap 25. We could expect that to be a bit later now, because

:05:30. > :05:36.they have not put the energy in, following the safety car. If they

:05:36. > :05:46.are trying one stop, we expect that to be around lap 40. Daniel

:05:46. > :05:47.

:05:47. > :05:52.Ricciardo did not lose places. He came up to 12 place. He is doing

:05:52. > :06:02.well. You are watching Kimi Raikkonen, with the James Hunt, a

:06:02. > :06:06.

:06:06. > :06:11.crash helmet. -- James Hunt come at crash helmet to. Sebastian Vettel

:06:11. > :06:16.and Kimi Raikkonen were having a chat earlier, they get on well, but

:06:16. > :06:22.they raced hard in Bahrain. Kimi Raikkonen will look for any

:06:22. > :06:28.opportunity to get past the double world champion. Mark Webber is

:06:28. > :06:33.looking good at front, but Nico Rosberg is holding on to him.

:06:33. > :06:37.in the dirty air, 0.8 seconds behind. He needs to put the

:06:38. > :06:41.pressure on Mark Webber. The wonderful thing about being the

:06:41. > :06:49.leader of this Grand Prix, you do not need to worry about dancing in

:06:49. > :06:54.your mirrors, apart from the run into Sainte Devote and the Chicane.

:06:54. > :07:00.Apart from that, you can focus on rhythm and consistency. Once you

:07:00. > :07:03.get out of the rhythm, it affects your next corner. Ayrton Senna

:07:03. > :07:13.crashed here when he had a huge lead, because he relaxed for a

:07:13. > :07:20.moment. That concentration is total. The fastest section here. Weaving

:07:20. > :07:30.it left and right, and then along towards the back. Still, Nico

:07:30. > :07:31.

:07:31. > :07:39.Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, then the Ferrari cars, then Sebastian Vettel.

:07:39. > :07:43.It looks like Felipe Massa is getting a hurry up. RADIO: We are

:07:43. > :07:50.only the third runner on prime tyres. They can make this work, we

:07:50. > :07:55.need to look after the tyres. can see the yellow writing, a

:07:55. > :07:59.different strategy being used by Red Bull for Sebastian Vettel and

:08:00. > :08:05.Pat McLaren for Jenson Button. Being out in front, as we have seen

:08:05. > :08:09.so far, it is even more important on the perennial tyres, because

:08:09. > :08:17.when you are behind another car, it is easy to overwork them and troppo

:08:17. > :08:21.way. Pastor Maldonado used it to great effect. Statistically, over

:08:21. > :08:26.the first five races, three of the winners have come from the front

:08:26. > :08:28.row. Clean air is always an advantage. It is an amazing

:08:28. > :08:36.statistic when we consider how unpredictable it seems they have

:08:36. > :08:40.been. But what is sure at the moment, Mark Webber has converted

:08:40. > :08:50.the inherited poor position into a comfortable lead. They are going

:08:50. > :08:50.

:08:50. > :08:58.through the management phase, they know they have got to try and get

:08:58. > :09:01.as far as they possibly can without going off the cliff. If they hit

:09:02. > :09:10.the cliff after Sainte Devote, it is a long black. The drivers will

:09:10. > :09:19.be communicating with their engineers. Car number one,... It

:09:19. > :09:25.does not specify him, but some cars are being investigated for short

:09:25. > :09:30.cuts and... Look at the movement! Most of the suspension of the cars

:09:30. > :09:38.is in the side wall of the tyre. Hopefully there will not be any

:09:38. > :09:46.changes to drivers who and made the short cut. If they were avoiding

:09:46. > :09:49.the accident, hopefully they will get away with it. We have lost a

:09:49. > :09:56.few cars as a result of the accidents at the first corner,

:09:56. > :10:00.Romain Grosjean, a potential race winner, fast in practice, did not

:10:00. > :10:07.quite qualify as well as they thought, but no chance now,

:10:07. > :10:14.likewise Pastor Maldonado, Pedro de la Rosa, with his damaged, and

:10:14. > :10:22.Kamui Kobayashi, I am not sure he will be doing any more. That is the

:10:22. > :10:30.typical scenario in Monaco, safety cast in nearly every Grand Prix. A

:10:30. > :10:40.tight line for Kimi Raikkonen, not wanting to risk sliding the Castle.

:10:40. > :10:41.

:10:41. > :10:47.-- sliding the car at all. Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, 0.4

:10:47. > :10:55.seconds. Felipe Massa is in the zone, he will be losing core Lind,

:10:55. > :11:01.working for tyres, he does not look under pressure from Sebastian

:11:01. > :11:06.Vettel, so perhaps he is saying it, I am quicker, perhaps you should

:11:06. > :11:10.move Fernando Alonso to one side. wonder if that will happen!

:11:10. > :11:13.Fernando Alonso is the joint championship leader. His main

:11:13. > :11:23.thoughts are staying in front of Sebastian Vettel and keeping in

:11:23. > :11:46.

:11:46. > :11:51.in qualifying, so you can imagine what it is like for the drivers to

:11:51. > :11:57.be so much slower when they run with the heavy tanks. They have to

:11:57. > :12:03.manage it. Michael Schumacher was critical of the tyres in Bahrain.

:12:03. > :12:07.He was not saying too much negative yesterday! But that is just one of

:12:07. > :12:15.the challenges. It has always been an inherent part of the scale a

:12:15. > :12:22.driver needs in Formula One. Sebastian Vettel, on the yellow

:12:22. > :12:25.wall tyres, he is maintaining the pace. He is a bit back from the

:12:25. > :12:35.Ferrari cars, but he is not punching them up behind. He has

:12:35. > :12:36.

:12:36. > :12:46.been helped by Fernando Alonso. You have got the distinct top three,

:12:46. > :12:53.

:12:53. > :12:57.and they are just starting to break cars that made the short cut on the

:12:57. > :13:01.first corner. Sebastian Vettel was one of those, he is not being

:13:01. > :13:06.penalised. Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo were the others.

:13:06. > :13:16.And the Marussia cars. I have not had a penalty applied, they

:13:16. > :13:21.continue racing. This is Michael Schumacher. He had the tremendous

:13:21. > :13:29.pace yesterday. He knows this is a long race, he has won this five

:13:29. > :13:35.times. That great -- that matches Graham Hill. Michael Schumacher has

:13:35. > :13:41.been Mr Monaco in the modern era, but Ayrton Senna has six wins.

:13:41. > :13:47.Michael Schumacher is biding his time. Nico Hulkenberg is behind him.

:13:47. > :13:51.Then, Bruno Senna, Paul di Resta, Daniel Ricciardo. It will be one of

:13:51. > :14:00.the only statistics that Michael Schumacher does not come out best

:14:00. > :14:04.on. Ayrton Senna rewrote the history books. Michael Schumacher

:14:04. > :14:12.is a seven-times world champion. What a miserable weekend it has

:14:12. > :14:17.been after Pastor Maldonado, after being the start of Barcelona.

:14:17. > :14:24.not approach a driver in a bad mood! You are taking your life into

:14:24. > :14:31.your hands if you interview him! He is out of the race. Up front, Mark

:14:31. > :14:41.Webber leads, as we go on to the 12th lap, 1.4 seconds the advantage

:14:41. > :14:48.

:14:48. > :14:54.Heikki Kovalainen in 13th place, a great performance from hemp. He is

:14:54. > :15:03.opening out a cap to Jenson Button in the McLaren. -- opening out a

:15:03. > :15:13.gap. Jenson Button is on the Prime tyre. In qualifying, that. To 0.8

:15:13. > :15:19.seconds. Sergio Perez past Jean- Eric Vergne. Generic gives himself

:15:19. > :15:27.just enough space, and he cuts the inside of the chicane -- Jean-Eric

:15:27. > :15:31.Vergne gives himself just enough space. The mist apex, he will

:15:31. > :15:36.probably get a warning on this lap, but he cannot systematically do

:15:36. > :15:46.that. If there was a barrier there, he would have hit it. You have to

:15:46. > :15:49.

:15:50. > :15:55.he wants to be after that tremendous getaway. Mark Webber is

:15:55. > :16:00.controlling this race currently. The on to lap 13 now. We are

:16:00. > :16:05.expecting pit-stops to come along in the next couple of laps. Gary,

:16:06. > :16:13.from your vantage point, I used in any action in the pits? We are on

:16:13. > :16:20.board with Kimi Raikkonen. RADIO: We could get some rain in 15 laps

:16:20. > :16:26.time. Does that affect the strategy as well, hearing that? It does

:16:26. > :16:30.really. You have to hang on and drive as far as you can on these.

:16:30. > :16:37.If you have the wets on, you do not want to pick three of four laps

:16:37. > :16:43.before it. The super soft tyre is good for probably 25 laps and then

:16:43. > :16:53.it may fall off at any time. The yellow tyre, the soft one is good

:16:53. > :16:54.

:16:54. > :16:57.for 30-35 laps. Vettel is leaving a bit of a gap to Massa. I think most

:16:57. > :17:03.people will be looking closely at the weather forecast. I'm sure

:17:03. > :17:07.there will be. Certainly, as a driver, you do not want it to rain

:17:07. > :17:11.if you out in front. May be in the middle of the grid you can take

:17:11. > :17:15.advantage. If it is in about 15 laps time and that was fairly honed

:17:15. > :17:20.in on one single number from the Lotus engineer, that would fall

:17:20. > :17:24.into the window of when you could expect to come in on the super-

:17:24. > :17:31.softs and go for your two stops. I do not think it scares him too much.

:17:31. > :17:34.Once they get closer to that point. We see a replay of the side wall

:17:34. > :17:41.movement from the Ferrari as it comes off the high speed chicane at

:17:41. > :17:44.the swimming pool. They will be trying to go as far as they can on

:17:44. > :17:49.these tyres. The last thing you want to do is stop, but a new set

:17:49. > :17:53.of slicks on but then have to come in two laps later for some

:17:53. > :17:57.intermediates. At the start of the race we saw Grosjean and Michael

:17:57. > :18:05.Schumacher or make contact. Lee McKenzie is talking to Romain

:18:05. > :18:13.Grosjean. Tell us about the start. I think we had a terrible start. I

:18:13. > :18:17.need to see the image. It was quite strange for me to see everybody

:18:17. > :18:23.facing me or me facing everybody. And very disappointing for not

:18:23. > :18:27.finishing the home Grand Prix. of the race Grosjean along with

:18:27. > :18:34.Maldonado, de la Rosa and Kobayashi. Kobayashi jumped over the kerb at

:18:34. > :18:44.the front corn and did enough damage to put him out. Four

:18:44. > :18:47.

:18:47. > :18:57.retirements from this race already. RADIO: Race controller asked us to

:18:57. > :18:57.

:18:57. > :19:07.give the position. Jean-Eric Vergne was a bit upset to have to give up

:19:07. > :19:10.

:19:10. > :19:15.the position. I think at the end of that radio transmission Jean-Eric

:19:15. > :19:20.Vergne said, what about the first lap? He obviously felt he had

:19:20. > :19:26.gained and some people were cutting the corner. Once you have opened

:19:26. > :19:31.the door you cannot decide to just drive straight. You have to keep to

:19:31. > :19:36.the right of the yellow kerbs. Jean-Eric Vergne wearing a Jean

:19:36. > :19:40.Alesi coloured crash helmet for the weekend losing out and he is down

:19:40. > :19:47.in 17th position at the moment. Michael Schumacher is chasing after

:19:47. > :19:53.Kimi Raikkonen. The youngster Nico Hulkenberg is behind them. Only the

:19:53. > :19:56.second Grand Prix for him in Monaco. Another one we have seen out of the

:19:56. > :20:00.race is Pastor Maldonado. He started right at the back of the

:20:00. > :20:07.grid but only got to the first corner. Lee McKenzie is talking to

:20:07. > :20:14.him. What a difference two weeks can make, tell us what happened.

:20:14. > :20:21.was on the dirty side of the truck and Summerbee crossed my line and

:20:21. > :20:29.it was a difficult moment. -- somebody crossed my line. It sounds

:20:29. > :20:34.like he drove into the back of Pedro de la Rosa. Maldonado, sadly

:20:34. > :20:44.he has had a few bits of contact this weekend. Yes, it has been a

:20:44. > :20:48.scruffy weekend. Is this giving us the sign of inconsistency in his

:20:48. > :20:53.performance race to race. It looked like he had made day break through

:20:53. > :21:01.in Barcelona. He controlled that race superbly. We will follow him

:21:01. > :21:07.in the rest of the season. We on board with Michael Schumacher.

:21:07. > :21:14.Running into the limiter before coming down to the chicane.

:21:14. > :21:24.Raikkonen went to a bit wide there. Michael Starks to sense that the

:21:24. > :21:33.

:21:33. > :21:38.Lotus ahead -- Michael Starks to sense about the latest ahead. If. I

:21:38. > :21:47.was going to say German engineering is renowned to be very strong but

:21:47. > :21:52.the car was 100 % built in Britain. Karthikeyan had an oversteer moment.

:21:52. > :21:58.The Mercedes engine built in Brixworth in the UK, the car built

:21:58. > :22:03.in Brackley. It is a German parent company but British engineering

:22:03. > :22:12.behind it. Let's run through the order. It is Webber leading by two

:22:12. > :22:16.seconds from Nico Rosberg. And Hamilton, Alonso, Massa, Sebastian

:22:16. > :22:20.Vettel sixth. In the pits is Vitaly Petrov in the Caterham. This is not

:22:20. > :22:25.looking like a normal pit stop. There is obviously a problem on

:22:25. > :22:33.that car. That is a great shame for Vitaly Petrov. Not a great weekend.

:22:33. > :22:39.He had a KERS failure during qualifying. Nico Hulkenberg in the

:22:39. > :22:42.Force India, he is keeping Michael on us. Force India are finding a

:22:42. > :22:47.bit of form at this early stage of the race. They are running ninth

:22:47. > :22:51.and 11th. It looks like we have lost a fifth car in this race

:22:51. > :22:58.unless they sent him out later on. But his team-mate Heikki Kovalainen

:22:58. > :23:05.is running in 13th place. That could be crucial as we go through

:23:05. > :23:11.this race. That is Jean-Eric Vergne making his first pit stop.

:23:11. > :23:21.Relatively early. He has put the harder compound tyre on so he goes

:23:21. > :23:24.out on the yellow tyre now. Gary, it looks like we are into pit stops

:23:24. > :23:29.now. Is that simply because he was right at the back of the field so

:23:29. > :23:33.nothing to lose by coming in now? think obviously he has to do it

:23:33. > :23:41.some time and he might as well do it without being held up. We are

:23:41. > :23:48.starting to see the lap time stripping away of -- a little bit.

:23:48. > :23:53.-- the lap times are dropping away a little bit. We have to look

:23:53. > :23:58.carefully at the times. Right, keep an eye on that. Meanwhile, Lee

:23:58. > :24:02.McKenzie has caught up with Kamui Kobayashi. That look like an

:24:02. > :24:07.uncomfortable jump that he did in the start, did you damage your car?

:24:07. > :24:16.Is, had a problem with the suspension. It was very dangerous

:24:16. > :24:25.to continue to drive. I did not expect it to happen like that. The

:24:25. > :24:32.tyres were damaged. Sergio Perez has gained another place in the

:24:32. > :24:42.same style. He has got past T- Mobile Glock. Yes, Glock did not

:24:42. > :24:52.

:24:52. > :25:02.pace with the guys in front but he has shown a new maturity in his

:25:02. > :25:06.driving. We are going to keep an eye on the pit lane. It is early

:25:06. > :25:13.for any of the top teams to do a stop but he will be the first to

:25:13. > :25:18.blame? Where there are still leads, 1.8 seconds, his advantage. They

:25:18. > :25:22.really have to manage their tyres. Hamilton did it beautifully in

:25:22. > :25:31.Spain having to start from the back. The team were constantly up dating

:25:31. > :25:37.him about this dyke -- state of the tyres. They are constantly talking

:25:37. > :25:40.to the drivers this year, telling them what to do with the tyres.

:25:40. > :25:45.Normally on high-speed circuits, it is natural load which is the main

:25:45. > :25:55.issue with the tyre but on the streets of Monaco it is all about

:25:55. > :25:56.

:25:56. > :25:59.traction so long a Tudor and will load -- longitudinal load. It is

:25:59. > :26:05.leaving rubber behind and put the surface temperature into an area

:26:05. > :26:14.which is not comfortable said that is why you see them driving so

:26:14. > :26:18.precisely, so smoothly and trying to burn the fuel. Alonso is

:26:18. > :26:28.starting to come back at Hamilton. Nothing wrong with the way the

:26:28. > :26:43.

:26:43. > :26:52.his team-mate. You're looking here at Nico Rosberg who is in second

:26:52. > :26:57.place, remember. 2.2 seconds the gap between himself and Webber.

:26:57. > :27:04.Pickard just floats over the kerbs as you go through the high-speed

:27:04. > :27:09.chicane. It is that fantastic feeling. Your eyes will be on

:27:09. > :27:15.stalks as you go round that corner. Is there any debris there? Where

:27:15. > :27:18.are the marbles on the track? This track is constantly evolving lap

:27:18. > :27:22.after lap. The fastest lap of the race will potentially be at the

:27:22. > :27:28.very end when there is as much rubber down on the tarmac as much

:27:28. > :27:32.as possible. They open the streets every night. This was the scene of

:27:32. > :27:37.a party last night. You have a series of bars and restaurants and

:27:37. > :27:42.this was just packed with people last evening. When we filmed the

:27:42. > :27:46.opener there was still confetti which has been embedded into the

:27:46. > :27:50.tarmac from someone's celebration last night. It is party town at

:27:50. > :28:00.night time here but it is race time now. Webber is still looking at the

:28:00. > :28:03.

:28:03. > :28:08.moment. Last year, the Mercedes were among the first to make a pit

:28:08. > :28:14.stop, coming in as early as lap 12. No sign of that on this occasion.

:28:14. > :28:19.We have had a safety car period. That has pushed us deeper into the

:28:19. > :28:22.race. The teams will be happy with the way the tyres are holding up.

:28:22. > :28:28.Gary, I think everybody up front will be relieved they have been

:28:28. > :28:32.able to go this far already. Yes, they will be. The safety car

:28:32. > :28:42.enabled them to get the temperatures down and balance the

:28:42. > :28:43.

:28:43. > :28:48.car better. Lap 22 of the race, the tyres are really hanging on well.

:28:48. > :28:53.They will have to go until lap 30- 35 if they are looking at doing a

:28:53. > :28:57.one-stop. The first pit stop will be a view of whether they eat goat

:28:57. > :29:01.one or two stops. The do you think that Red Bull might be frustrated

:29:01. > :29:05.from Vettel's point of year because he is on those harder tyres but

:29:05. > :29:13.maybe it will not work as well for him doing that? I still think it

:29:13. > :29:20.looks pretty good for him. He is 10.9 seconds behind Webber. He

:29:20. > :29:30.should take the lead as well -- as long as he can keep the gap. It is

:29:30. > :29:33.

:29:34. > :29:40.working out OK for him. It is going to be a bit of cat-and-mouse on

:29:40. > :29:45.this one. Mark Webber still leading this race. Car one missed the apex

:29:45. > :29:48.of turn ten. That is interesting. That is Sebastian Vettel they are

:29:49. > :29:52.talking about. We have already heard that if you gain a place

:29:52. > :30:02.they're doing that then you are in trouble but he might just get a

:30:02. > :30:03.

:30:03. > :30:10.warning on this occasion. What they have realised his, Michael

:30:10. > :30:14.Schumacher gets up to Kimi Raikkonen. He is sizing up

:30:14. > :30:19.Raikkonen. Raikkonen, the pressure builds. You know, you glance in

:30:19. > :30:23.your mirror as you can hear the echo of the other engine behind you.

:30:23. > :30:27.You have to start driving more defensively which will open up the

:30:27. > :30:31.gap to Beth -- Vettel in front. Coming back to the chicane, as they

:30:31. > :30:37.have improved the run-off there because we have seen some big

:30:37. > :30:41.crashes, it means the drivers can have a get out of jail free card.

:30:41. > :30:46.It was brought up in the drivers' meeting to keep an eye on someone

:30:46. > :30:50.deliberately missing the chicane on the in lap. We have just seen a

:30:50. > :31:00.replay of Vettel's incident. What the stewards will look at is

:31:00. > :31:06.

:31:06. > :31:11.whether he gained any lap time almost pulling off the rim. A great

:31:11. > :31:15.run from Heikki Kovalainen, he is still in 13th place. The battle

:31:16. > :31:21.between the back markers, Marussia lead. None of them have scored

:31:21. > :31:28.points, but they have had a 40 place. At the moment, cuter run

:31:28. > :31:35.would go ahead, -- Caterham would go ahead. It makes a difference as

:31:35. > :31:39.to how the money will be handed out at the end of the year. We are

:31:39. > :31:45.still waiting for any of the front runners to make the move into the

:31:45. > :31:54.pits. When you talk about the great job Heikki Kovalainen is the wind,

:31:54. > :31:58.Jenson Button is just behind him, he will be managing and

:31:58. > :32:03.concentrating to see if he can get away with one stop. He is 27

:32:03. > :32:09.seconds behind the leader. If he can do Wandless stop, he will

:32:09. > :32:15.benefit 20 seconds. That is what it costs you to do a normal pit-stop

:32:15. > :32:22.and rejoined the race track. Russia both still running it. --

:32:22. > :32:28.Marussia. RADIO: Some of the option runners ahead are starting to

:32:29. > :32:35.struggle. That is an interesting, do. They do not look as though they

:32:35. > :32:38.are struggling back much. Perhaps some of them further down the order.

:32:38. > :32:44.Kimi Raikkonen is beginning to drop into the clutches of Michael

:32:44. > :32:49.Schumacher. It is about keeping your man motivated and focused, not

:32:49. > :32:55.that Jenson Button struggles with that. But when you are on your own,

:32:55. > :33:00.you cannot watch all of the big screens. But I used to look at the

:33:00. > :33:07.exit of Sainte Devote, there is a huge TV. It was always nice to keep

:33:07. > :33:16.an eye on what is happening, what the viewers are seeing. Lewis

:33:16. > :33:23.Hamilton holding on to third place. Fernando Alonso, 1.1 seconds behind.

:33:23. > :33:29.Bruno Senna is quietly holding on to the top 10. RADIO: Possible

:33:29. > :33:34.light rain in four minutes. wonder nobody is going to come into

:33:34. > :33:44.the pits just yet. Even if the Times drop-offs. You want to stay

:33:44. > :33:45.

:33:45. > :33:52.out until the rain comes, and go for intermediate tyres. Jenson

:33:52. > :34:00.Button is still in 14th place. Sergio Perez behind him. Then, Timo

:34:00. > :34:10.Glock and Charles Pic. Jean-Eric Vergne has just set the fastest lap.

:34:10. > :34:15.He has gone into the pits. Interestingly, we are just opposite

:34:15. > :34:24.the pit lane, we have the McLaren mechanics standing up, and the

:34:24. > :34:34.Ferrari mechanics. You have got Mercedes and pit-bull sitting down.

:34:34. > :34:34.

:34:34. > :34:38.-- Red Bull. We are back on board with Michael Schumacher, up the

:34:38. > :34:48.gearbox of Kimi Raikkonen. He is very close behind him. It is

:34:48. > :34:51.difficult to overtake. This is the DRS zone. There is no chance for

:34:51. > :34:57.Michael Schumacher to even get close to the Lotus on that curve.

:34:57. > :35:02.Kimi Raikkonen is holding him up. Michael tried to go down they

:35:02. > :35:08.inside, Kimi Raikkonen had to get defensive. You have to apply the

:35:08. > :35:18.brakes so early. Piling on the pressure with Kimi Raikkonen. You

:35:18. > :35:20.

:35:20. > :35:24.can see how difficulty emerges. Kimi Raikkonen backing up the pack.

:35:24. > :35:29.There is no doubt he is struggling. Everybody behind him looks

:35:29. > :35:36.potentially faster. But he is holding the position. It would be

:35:36. > :35:43.horrible if he let go. RADIO: Rain in the next five laps, we have to

:35:43. > :35:48.stay out. We have a Mercedes in the pit lane, they have decided to

:35:48. > :35:58.bring Nico Rosberg end. From second place. Away he goes, a reasonable

:35:58. > :36:05.stop. We will not see as many pit- stops today as we have seen. Mark

:36:05. > :36:10.Webber still leads. He has not made his pit stop. Lewis Hamilton moves

:36:10. > :36:17.up to second place, Fernando Alonso up to third place. That drops Nico

:36:17. > :36:22.Rosberg into clean air. The next man up the road is Sebastian Vettel.

:36:22. > :36:28.I wonder if Lotus I just asking a bit too much of Kimi Raikkonen. He

:36:28. > :36:34.is struggling with the tyres. This is playing into the hands of the

:36:34. > :36:39.front runners. This is giving the top six breathing space. Gary, this

:36:39. > :36:47.opens up the question, do you react to what is happening, or do you

:36:47. > :36:54.react thinking what might happen? am feeling a couple of small spots.

:36:54. > :36:59.It is quite caught down here. I do not understand why Nicky Wroes

:36:59. > :37:05.Burke -- Nico Rosberg went in, because he had set the fastest lap.

:37:06. > :37:13.But Kimi Raikkonen, he is the one that is in trouble. Everybody is

:37:14. > :37:17.queueing up behind him. I do not understand the logic. If I was Nico

:37:17. > :37:26.Rosberg, I would really have tried to stay out there. Michael

:37:26. > :37:31.Schumacher getting ever closer to Kimi Raikkonen. Nico Hulkenberg is

:37:31. > :37:41.there, Bruno Senna, Paul di Resta. And Daniel Ricciardo. And Heikki

:37:41. > :37:42.

:37:42. > :37:45.Kovalainen, I think. Kimi Raikkonen is fending them off at the moment.

:37:45. > :37:50.Then, you can see Jenson Button, right at the back of the group in

:37:50. > :37:59.14th. Mark Webber is still in control, and in front, but no doubt

:37:59. > :38:07.keeping a wary eye on the weather. The rear tyres of going off on the

:38:07. > :38:13.Lotus. Michael has tried a couple of times. Fernando Alonso on the

:38:13. > :38:21.back of Lewis Hamilton. Only 0.1 seconds difference. We have been so

:38:21. > :38:26.busy watching the action from seventh place down. Red Bull and

:38:26. > :38:31.McLaren in the pit lane. The race leader is in the pits. Looking to

:38:31. > :38:40.come out ahead of Nico Rosberg, of course. Lewis Hamilton in from

:38:40. > :38:49.second place. The yellow tyre, the harder tyre. They have got to lap

:38:49. > :38:55.30 on the softer tyre. Mark Webber rejoins in third of Nico Rosberg.

:38:55. > :39:00.They all have slick tyres on. If it rains, that will change things. But

:39:00. > :39:06.they have reacted to what is happening now. This could be the

:39:06. > :39:15.only stop for them. Finally, Kimi Raikkonen comes in. He has also

:39:15. > :39:19.gone for the harder tyre. Bruno Senna rejoins. All of them coming

:39:19. > :39:23.cleanly out, but those that were locked up behind Kimi Raikkonen,

:39:24. > :39:29.Michael has stayed out, and he is now beginning to set some personal

:39:29. > :39:34.best sector Times, so he is hoping that he is going to be able to get

:39:34. > :39:43.past Kimi Raikkonen with the pit stop. Look at how close it was to

:39:43. > :39:53.the Force India! Brave guys. You would not get enough money to make

:39:53. > :39:59.me fulfil that role! Fernando Alonso has come in. He came in

:39:59. > :40:09.later than the other guys. Michael Schumacher is still out at the

:40:09. > :40:11.

:40:11. > :40:16.moment. Fernando Alonso has gained a bit of time. Where is Lewis

:40:16. > :40:19.Hamilton? He is well in front of Lewis Hamilton. He is still coming

:40:19. > :40:28.over the finish line first stop Fernando Alonso has taken third

:40:28. > :40:35.place. He was right behind Lewis Hamilton, he got a good Olap, and

:40:35. > :40:41.that is great strategy. Gary? one lap he did, he went purple in

:40:41. > :40:46.the first two sectors. He was only just behind Lewis Hamilton before

:40:46. > :40:52.the pit stop. He used the one lap in clean air. It was amazing that

:40:52. > :41:00.he could do that, the tyres had done so many laps, and on the

:41:00. > :41:04.Ferrari! Yes, you have got to be brave to do something different.

:41:04. > :41:14.That is what they were doing it, they were reacting to everybody

:41:14. > :41:14.

:41:14. > :41:21.else. He has got a place out of it. Felipe Massa is in. Was he as quick

:41:21. > :41:28.as Fernando Alonso? I do not think so. Ferrari have been so slick with

:41:28. > :41:36.their pit-stops. There have been the team to beat, 3.3 seconds.

:41:36. > :41:42.Let's look for Fernando Alonso. He will come out behind Lewis Hamilton.

:41:42. > :41:46.And Michael Schumacher has run- through. Michael Schumacher is

:41:46. > :41:50.ahead of Felipe Massa. That has worked out well for Michael

:41:50. > :41:57.Schumacher, splitting the Ferrari cars. That means he is also ahead

:41:57. > :42:03.of Kimi Raikkonen, who is further back. That has worked very well for

:42:03. > :42:09.Michael Schumacher. Leading the race, Sebastian Vettel. He is on a

:42:10. > :42:17.different strategy to all of the others. Did he keep it out of the

:42:17. > :42:23.barrier? Just about, I think. behind the red-and-white kerb. It

:42:23. > :42:29.is an unforgiving a yellow lumps of metal. The cars are stiffly sprung

:42:29. > :42:34.up on a circuit where they try to get a bit more compliance. He is on

:42:34. > :42:39.the harder compound tyre. Therefore, he is staying out longer than

:42:40. > :42:45.anybody else before he makes his pit-stop. He merely has a ten-

:42:45. > :42:51.second advantage over his team-mate. Mark Webber stopped first, but

:42:51. > :42:57.Sebastian Vettel is the race. Kimi Raikkonen has dropped all the way

:42:57. > :43:03.to 14th place. Nico Hulkenberg is in 15th, but that is partly because

:43:03. > :43:09.several others have also stayed out and not made their pit-stops yet.

:43:09. > :43:17.We are still waiting for Michael to make his pit-stop. He is going very

:43:18. > :43:23.deep into this race without having made a pit stop. Paul di Resta,

:43:23. > :43:29.Daniel Ricciardo, Jenson Button, Sergio Perez, they are all running

:43:29. > :43:35.in front of Kimi Raikkonen. They do not have a big enough gap... RADIO:

:43:35. > :43:45.Keep doing this. If it rains, that would really work for Sebastian

:43:45. > :43:52.

:43:52. > :44:02.Vettel! Yes, but he is also the tyres and the fuel, and deliver

:44:02. > :44:07.

:44:07. > :44:13.the lap times of a stop a very quick lap indeed. 1:19.5. Very fast.

:44:13. > :44:19.For everything moving around over the bumps of Monaco. That was Mark

:44:19. > :44:28.Webber a moment or two ago. He was on the yellow tyres. He is still

:44:28. > :44:36.running in second place. He will get a warning for that. He decided

:44:37. > :44:45.not to risk making bitter. -- making the turn. Sebastian Vettel

:44:45. > :44:53.is going more quickly than Mark Webber. He is flying at, he has got

:44:53. > :44:58.the lead after 13 seconds. Gary, the pace that Sebastian dazzle is

:44:58. > :45:08.doing it, how is he so fast on these tyres? -- that Sebastian

:45:08. > :45:09.

:45:09. > :45:13.Vettel is doing it? The others have 48 laps to do on their new set of

:45:13. > :45:23.tyres. They might be driving conservatively. If they can keep

:45:23. > :45:38.

:45:38. > :45:44.Sebastian Vettel within the 22nd comes Michael Schumacher. He has

:45:44. > :45:48.managed to go to lap 35 before changing to be harder compound tyre.

:45:48. > :45:53.That is good driver management from the driver and team. Where will it

:45:53. > :45:57.bring him out? It will bring him out behind Button who was ninth. It

:45:58. > :46:07.will also bring him out into a nice clear bit of track. Jean-Eric

:46:07. > :46:16.Vergne is in the background. Regained their we thought he had

:46:16. > :46:21.made, not quite the same. Raikkonen was his initial target. No longer

:46:21. > :46:26.is he up there with the Ferraris. It is Vettel who leads this race

:46:26. > :46:30.from his team-mate Mark Webber. Teams are wondering whether Red

:46:30. > :46:34.Bull are going to work this one together and effectively slow

:46:34. > :46:39.everyone else down and give Vettel the chance to make a gap. I wonder

:46:39. > :46:44.if that would occur or whether it is a question those are looking

:46:44. > :46:49.after their tyres. Karthikeyan got out of the way there. It is

:46:49. > :46:54.certainly allowed. You can play the team order situation. It is not

:46:54. > :47:01.against the rules but it is the early stage of the season. Both

:47:02. > :47:06.Mark and Vettel are in the championship along with Alonso. We

:47:06. > :47:15.see a bitter squabbling for position. Raikkonen was caught out

:47:15. > :47:22.completely. I think we have just seen the Force India of di Resta

:47:22. > :47:28.make his pit stop. He was running in ninth place. He is back on the

:47:28. > :47:34.circuit now. Mark Webber comes through in second place. Rosberg is

:47:34. > :47:39.trying to get past the traffic, past Narain Karthikeyan. He has the

:47:39. > :47:43.Ferrari behind him. If he gets blocked by the HRT that could allow

:47:43. > :47:48.Alonso to have a little look, not on this lap. Karthikeyan doing the

:47:48. > :47:54.sensible thing and getting out of the way. Alonso was not able to

:47:54. > :47:58.take advantage. Hamilton was going to go past the HRT as well. Ferrari

:47:58. > :48:04.are doing a good job on strategy today. Perhaps they did not get it

:48:04. > :48:10.right in Barcelona. They could have won the race perhaps if they had

:48:10. > :48:14.called their pit stop strategy differently. Remember, in terms of

:48:14. > :48:18.the battle for the championship, Alonso is very wary about Hamilton.

:48:18. > :48:22.He was quoted yesterday as saying he sees Hamilton has perhaps the

:48:22. > :48:27.biggest threat for the outright title. Four Alonso to have jumped

:48:27. > :48:31.among those pit stops, he will be very pleased about that. Sebastian

:48:31. > :48:37.Vettel is a second quicker than Mark Webber. Nico Rosberg has that

:48:37. > :48:42.gap up to 15.8 seconds. If he can get it over 20 he can make an extra

:48:42. > :48:47.pit stop and still come out in the lead. I am not really understanding

:48:47. > :48:53.any strategy to preserve too much the tyres now from Webber and

:48:53. > :48:56.Rosberg. That is quite a sizable gap in that town. Gary, do you have

:48:56. > :49:02.any further thoughts on it? It looks that Vettel is in an

:49:02. > :49:11.operating window with the old tyres which is allowing him to have the

:49:11. > :49:15.confidence to push. Just looking there is an incident involving

:49:15. > :49:21.Raikkonen and Perez which is under investigation by the stewards. Gary,

:49:21. > :49:27.your thoughts? As far as I can see, I think Webber is doing whatever

:49:27. > :49:35.that team was telling the driver, back the other guys up a little

:49:35. > :49:43.bit,. That allow Vettel to stop and he will come out hope fully behind

:49:43. > :49:49.Webber, that will be the plan. The thing that will throw that is the

:49:49. > :49:53.rain is starting. There are a few drops. Not heavy yet. We will watch

:49:53. > :50:00.that very closely. The track temperature has dropped a little

:50:00. > :50:03.bit, 33 degrees now. Any rain here and the place turns into a skating

:50:03. > :50:06.rink. It rained here during Thursday practice and the

:50:06. > :50:10.difference in speed as the cars tried to get back to the pits when

:50:10. > :50:14.they were on slick tyres was incredible. Any rain on this

:50:14. > :50:20.circuit is almost impossible on slicks. You can see all the white

:50:20. > :50:25.lines. They tried to grind them down. RADIO: It is starting to spit

:50:25. > :50:29.with rain. That is nice information from his engineer but I assure you

:50:29. > :50:33.Jenson will be aware of it before the engineer sitting in comfort of

:50:33. > :50:43.the engineering office above the pit lane. You see tiny drops on

:50:43. > :50:48.your visor. You are super-sensitive to any information that you see. A

:50:48. > :50:53.drive-through penalty for car number 15, Sergio Perez, for

:50:53. > :50:58.impeding Kimi Raikkonen. He has been penalised for cutting across

:50:58. > :51:03.the locus of Kimi Raikkonen. No surprise. We have McLaren out in

:51:03. > :51:08.the pit lane. Presumably it will be for Jenson Button. What tyres will

:51:08. > :51:14.they put on? If there is moisture in the air, do they send him out on

:51:14. > :51:19.slicks or intermediates? He is putting the super-softs on, getting

:51:20. > :51:26.back phase-out of the way. So the softer tyre. If it does get wet,

:51:26. > :51:32.then you do not have to run both of the dry compound tyres. But clearly

:51:32. > :51:40.McLaren decided to get him out there on those tyres now. Even if

:51:40. > :51:46.it is the last durable tyre. Heikki Kovalainen has got in front of the

:51:46. > :51:50.McLaren. Button has not been able to get the place on the pit stop.

:51:50. > :51:54.You would never think we would be seeing a McLaren battling a

:51:54. > :51:57.Caterham but that is exactly what is happening here. Jenson putting

:51:57. > :52:02.on the super-softs. If they do think there will be some rain and

:52:02. > :52:06.they have to stop for intermediates later, that will only be a short

:52:06. > :52:10.window. Heikki can cut across the yellow line as he comes into the

:52:10. > :52:15.first corner. Jenson is held to being to the right to the LN9 in

:52:15. > :52:20.the interests of safety. He has a view of the back of that Caterham.

:52:20. > :52:25.It has Renault power, it has KERS. In the next lap or two with the

:52:25. > :52:30.fresher tyres, Jenson has got to get on with it and try and pull a

:52:30. > :52:38.pass. That is quite something, the patron of Heikki Kovalainen having

:52:38. > :52:42.a brilliant run here at the moment. -- the Caterham. Let's just quickly

:52:42. > :52:46.run you through what is happening here in Monaco. We are just over

:52:46. > :52:50.half distance. Sebastian Vettel leads in the Red Bull by 15.8

:52:50. > :52:54.seconds over his team-mate Mark Webber. But there are different

:52:54. > :53:04.higher strategies so we are not sure how it will workout yet.

:53:04. > :53:05.

:53:05. > :53:13.Rosberg is third in the Mercedes, Alonso 44 Ferrari. -- Alonso fourth

:53:13. > :53:20.for Ferrari. Perez was doing his drive-through penalty there. Webber

:53:20. > :53:25.has started to reel in Vettel a little bit. Vettel is 21 seconds up

:53:25. > :53:35.the road from Hamilton. If they were to pick now then he would come

:53:35. > :53:36.

:53:36. > :53:41.out in fifth place just in front of Hamilton. You are meant to be to

:53:41. > :53:46.the right of the yellow line on pit-lane entry. That has cost him a

:53:46. > :53:51.drive through. That will add 16 seconds or so to his race time.

:53:51. > :53:55.serves that and get on his way. A quick reminder that we lost several

:53:55. > :54:05.cars in the early stage of the race. You are on board with Lewis

:54:05. > :54:09.

:54:09. > :54:14.Hamilton currently fifth. Ricciardo in at last. A very late stop by

:54:14. > :54:18.Daniel Ricciardo. Lewis was talking about the tyres. He was sane at

:54:18. > :54:23.this pace they will not last very long. He has obviously been given a

:54:23. > :54:27.hurry up from the team. Just to correct myself from earlier, if

:54:27. > :54:37.Vettel came out in front of Hamilton he would be in fourth

:54:37. > :54:44.

:54:44. > :54:53.place, not Fifth. Whether Red Bull could get back stop done or not.

:54:53. > :54:57.Another 1:19.4 from Vettel on the last lap. Webber is 1:19.6. The

:54:57. > :55:02.cars that that out of the race, we saw a couple of accidents in the

:55:02. > :55:05.first corner. Romain Grosjean is out of the race. Then Pastor

:55:06. > :55:09.Maldonado ran into the back of Pedro de la Rosa taking them both

:55:09. > :55:16.that. Kobayashi made contact with another car and we have also lost

:55:16. > :55:26.Petrov. Vettel has done four-to-one laps on the set of tyres. -- 41

:55:26. > :55:32.

:55:32. > :55:38.laps. He has made these tyres go a long way. RADIO: You need to close

:55:38. > :55:42.upon Hamilton. Vettel going a little bit slower and it you guys

:55:43. > :55:49.are going a bit quicker than him. You need to close upon him because

:55:49. > :55:53.there could be some point where he needs to pit. That is what they are

:55:53. > :55:56.working on. Even if Felipe Massa cannot pass Hamilton, he has got

:55:56. > :56:06.the right on his gearbox because that is where Vettel is likely to

:56:06. > :56:09.

:56:09. > :56:19.come out after he makes his pit stop. A good lap from Vettel. 19.2.

:56:19. > :56:23.

:56:23. > :56:28.Gary, sorry, David. 19.24 Vettel, - - 19.2 for Vettel. Hamilton has

:56:28. > :56:33.responded and is on 19.1. Again, Vettel is managing to open out the

:56:33. > :56:37.gap to the cars behind. Gary, what is the weather report in the pit

:56:37. > :56:42.lane? Still a few light spots, nothing to worry about at the

:56:42. > :56:47.moment but it is getting cooler and blacker. I think we will see enough

:56:47. > :56:52.rain to cause confusion before the end. The 1982 race was a famous

:56:52. > :56:57.race when it rained towards the end. Prost was winning, he spun and then

:56:57. > :57:01.it was absolute chaos. One of the most dramatic finale is to a Monaco

:57:01. > :57:06.Grand Prix. I don't know if we are in for that. At the moment it is

:57:06. > :57:13.Sebastian Vettel still leading. He has not made a pit stop yet. He

:57:13. > :57:19.started on the harder, compound tyre and he is driving beautifully.

:57:19. > :57:25.Vettel at his best at the moment. This is why he is double world

:57:25. > :57:30.champion. Will it be enough? That is the question. Meanwhile, Jenson

:57:30. > :57:36.Button cannot get past that Caterham. Heikki Kovalainen having

:57:36. > :57:46.the race of his season. They are battling over 13th place. UCB drive

:57:46. > :57:49.

:57:49. > :57:59.the Caterham have. -- you see the drive. The Caterham is working

:57:59. > :58:06.

:58:06. > :58:15.superbly on traction. It just shows you this year. RADIO: They keep

:58:15. > :58:20.dropping. Did he just say they were dropping things and it hit him on

:58:20. > :58:25.the head? Yes, they keep dropping things from the pit wall and

:58:25. > :58:29.something hit him on the head. is one of the peculiarities of the

:58:29. > :58:33.track that the pit lane looks out to the commentary box and the

:58:33. > :58:39.signalling boards are on the start- finish straight. It would be a

:58:39. > :58:49.brave man to hang back Bourdais in the winds in front of the cars. --

:58:49. > :58:49.

:58:49. > :58:59.hang that bald in the wind. The director loves this slow-motion

:58:59. > :59:02.

:59:02. > :59:06.through the high-speed chicane. Lewis was in one of the Cars movies.

:59:06. > :59:11.Having a three-year-old child, I watch a lot of films like that now!

:59:11. > :59:18.Are the guys behind Mark Webber and Rosberg are picking up the pace a

:59:18. > :59:23.bit. Vettel is still having to work at it. How much longer before he

:59:23. > :59:29.comes into the pits? No doubt keeping an eye on the weather as we

:59:29. > :59:33.are to see if it will rain. Michael Schumacher is in seventh. Jean-Eric

:59:33. > :59:38.Vergne is currently in eighth place. That is interesting. Di Resta his

:59:38. > :59:45.ninth, Hulkenberg in tenth place. Ben Kimi Raikkonen in 11th. Jean-

:59:45. > :59:49.Eric Vergne made an early pit stop. Gary, what are your thoughts on the

:59:49. > :59:53.Toro Rosso being in eighth place? Is there any chance he can keep it

:59:53. > :00:03.going from there? I would have thought it would be very, very

:00:03. > :00:04.

:00:04. > :00:10.difficult. Anything could happen. These tyres seem to have a mind of

:00:10. > :00:15.their own. They will be looking at Vettel's laps. We will have to see

:00:15. > :00:21.what happens. You have to honestly react to when the tyre falls off.

:00:21. > :00:31.No one will know, to be honest. That moment might be with us

:00:31. > :00:37.

:00:37. > :00:47.because Vettel's last lap he did if it was because he made a mistake

:00:47. > :00:52.or if he is approaching the cliff. He has done 45 laps, and he started

:00:52. > :00:58.on a full tank of fuel. Red Bull are coming out. He will be in this

:00:58. > :01:03.lap. He has reached the cliff in terms of performance. Sebastian

:01:03. > :01:07.Vettel will be coming into the pits. Where will he come back out? Behind

:01:07. > :01:12.Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa? Will he be fighting with Michael

:01:12. > :01:20.Schumacher? Forget Michael Schumacher, he is 22 seconds behind.

:01:20. > :01:28.It will be in the Battle of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton.

:01:28. > :01:33.They will be going around La Rascasse. He gets out ahead of

:01:33. > :01:40.Lewis Hamilton. But will he? They will battle out of the first corner.

:01:40. > :01:46.He just gets cut off by Sebastian Vettel! The McLaren is all over the

:01:46. > :01:52.back of the Red Bull! Surely Lewis Hamilton cannot find a way through.

:01:52. > :01:56.Sebastian battle has got the tyres working, he is on the softer

:01:56. > :02:04.compound -- Sebastian Vettel. He has got to make it work until the

:02:04. > :02:14.end. That was close. Will Lewis Hamilton be able to position

:02:14. > :02:18.

:02:18. > :02:22.himself? It does not not like it. - - does not look like it. He has got

:02:22. > :02:26.himself up into third place, Sebastian Vettel. When you consider

:02:26. > :02:33.he started in ninth place, the strategy has worked very

:02:34. > :02:43.effectively. It is a huge gain at a track like Monaco. It is fourth

:02:44. > :02:51.

:02:51. > :03:01.place. Apologies. There is so much going on! Mark Webber, 1.2 seconds

:03:01. > :03:02.

:03:02. > :03:10.advantage over Nico Rosberg. Felipe Massa is still in there. Michael

:03:10. > :03:17.Schumacher is some way back in seventh place. At the moment, the

:03:17. > :03:21.Force India cars are both running inside the points. The accuracy is

:03:21. > :03:27.so crucial, and we are still keeping an eye on the weather

:03:27. > :03:34.conditions. Gary, how are things? Traffic ahead. Let's keep an eye on

:03:34. > :03:41.that. That could have allowed Felipe Massa and opportunities.

:03:41. > :03:51.Back to Derry. What have you got there? The spots of rain had

:03:51. > :03:53.

:03:53. > :03:59.stopped. Sebastian Vettel has got to do 31 laps on the soft tyres.

:03:59. > :04:09.RADIO: We can expect no rain, we have got to go till the end.

:04:09. > :04:11.

:04:11. > :04:15.rain has moved away. The 31 laps, that is what the others did at the

:04:15. > :04:24.beginning. And the others have got to do what Sebastian Vettel did

:04:24. > :04:32.after a stop everything it's OK for one stop. -- what Sebastian Vettel

:04:32. > :04:40.did after one stop. There are only five seconds covering of Red Bull,

:04:40. > :04:49.a Mercedes, a Ferrari, a McLaren. It is incredibly open. Mark Webber

:04:49. > :04:54.in control at the moment, by 1.4 seconds. Lewis Hamilton is not far

:04:54. > :04:58.behind, but he will be disappointed, because he started in third place.

:04:58. > :05:06.He got beaten by Ferrari at the pit stop, and he has lost another one

:05:06. > :05:14.to Sebastian Vettel. We have got the two championship leaders tied

:05:14. > :05:22.on 61., remained virtually together on the track, and the mad second to

:05:22. > :05:30.them, running just. -- running just behind. All of them know how

:05:30. > :05:40.crucial it will be. RADIO: The leaders went 29 laps on the first

:05:40. > :05:40.

:05:40. > :05:45.stint. That has got to make him feel good. A confidence boost. He

:05:45. > :05:49.is not able to slow the car down, so he looks the front left wheel.

:05:49. > :05:56.As long as he does not gain any time from that, they should not be

:05:56. > :06:00.anything other than a gentle reminder. The crucial thing in that

:06:00. > :06:07.information to Sebastian Vettel, the point at which their leaders

:06:07. > :06:12.did 29 laps, the car was happier -- heavier, but now, there is less

:06:13. > :06:19.Mass, so the tyres have an easier time. Mark Webber is in control,

:06:19. > :06:29.from pole position. He made a beautiful better way. He has had a

:06:29. > :06:29.

:06:29. > :06:35.few problems at the start of races, but he did today, he got a great

:06:36. > :06:43.start. Fernando Alonso has gained some ground through the course of

:06:43. > :06:52.the race so far. Narain Karthikeyan is about to be lapped by Jean-Eric

:06:52. > :06:55.Vergne. Sergio Perez is the fastest man on the track, 1:17.2. That is

:06:56. > :07:03.2.5 seconds faster than the leaders! It shows how the leaders

:07:03. > :07:08.are trying to look after the tyres. Sergio Perez is showing off! He to

:07:08. > :07:14.showing how the men at the front are managing the tyres to get to

:07:14. > :07:18.the end of the race. Sergio Perez is completely out of sequence, he

:07:18. > :07:28.is just using it as an extended test session of how fast he can

:07:28. > :07:37.drive. Sebastian Vettelheim Fernando Alonso. -- Sebastian

:07:37. > :07:41.Vettel behind Fernando Alonso. We are getting to the latter third of

:07:41. > :07:49.the Monaco Grand Prix. Mark Webber is looking for two victories around

:07:49. > :07:56.this track. Lewis Hamilton has Felipe Massa right behind him.

:07:56. > :08:02.Felipe Massa having one of his best performances of the season. He has

:08:02. > :08:08.only scored two. So far this season, but he is running in sixth place.

:08:08. > :08:11.It has to be a confidence booster. He has been on form, all weekend.

:08:11. > :08:18.He was leading Fernando Alonso through some of the practice

:08:18. > :08:25.sessions. A really strong performance. Just six seconds off

:08:25. > :08:30.the leader. He is staying in the lead group, all six cars are very

:08:30. > :08:35.close. This is what makes it so difficult for the teams to make a

:08:35. > :08:45.judgment call on whether you should be looking elsewhere or not,

:08:45. > :08:46.

:08:46. > :08:52.because at any snapshot, you say, we should do this, and then others

:08:52. > :08:57.put out a good performance. We wonder why teams take a while to

:08:57. > :09:04.make decisions, they are trying to build up information. Gary, you

:09:04. > :09:11.talked to Rob Smedley about this being a restart for Felipe Massa.

:09:11. > :09:18.Yes, this is such a different track, it is not high-speed, like

:09:18. > :09:25.Silverstone. Fernando Alonso is good at that. But this track, it is

:09:25. > :09:31.about bravery. And it is about having a different set up a big car,

:09:31. > :09:37.so it gives him an opportunity to have a new lease of life. It will

:09:38. > :09:44.give him the confidence to show that he can do it. We will see if

:09:44. > :09:52.it is the start of a better second stage to the season. The gap is

:09:52. > :10:00.consistent. Between third and sixth, you can have any lap time you want,

:10:00. > :10:09.as long at cities -- as long as it is 20.1! Fernando Alonso is

:10:09. > :10:16.dictating the pace. So far, so good. Jean-Eric Vergne is still in eighth

:10:16. > :10:23.place. Kimi Raikkonen was part of the leading group, but he struggled

:10:23. > :10:32.before the pit stops. He has dropped to 11th place. Bruno Senna

:10:32. > :10:40.is in 12. Heikki Kovalainen is still in 13th place. There is

:10:40. > :10:46.nothing Jenson Button can do about Heikki Kovalainen, apparently.

:10:46. > :10:56.RADIO: Keep the tyres fresh, because he does not look fantastic,

:10:56. > :11:10.

:11:10. > :11:15.Lewis Hamilton. Lovely comments on purpose to save the tyres. He

:11:15. > :11:22.might try to attack later. That is what we saw Fernando Alonso do when

:11:22. > :11:32.he was coming towards the second phase of the tyres. As long as

:11:32. > :11:33.

:11:33. > :11:39.Fernando Alonso can keep Nico Rosberg in his side's. Somebody has

:11:39. > :11:44.got a problem somewhere. We will keep an eye out for that. Ferrari

:11:44. > :11:48.might be learning from their experience of chasing down fat --

:11:48. > :11:53.Pastor Maldonado at the Spanish Grand Prix. Perhaps they will be

:11:53. > :11:59.able to manage the tyres more. come up with every Grand Prix, they

:11:59. > :12:07.build up a more data. We saw the flashing yellow light, it looked as

:12:07. > :12:13.the Fernando Alonso backed off. We were trying to see what was giving

:12:13. > :12:19.us that. I did not see anything. The invisible car has created the

:12:19. > :12:29.yellow-flowered situation! It is strange! We do not know why the

:12:29. > :12:29.

:12:29. > :12:36.yellow flag is out. This is Timo Glock. There we are! But it looks

:12:36. > :12:44.like it is spinning like a curling stone to the edge of the Armco

:12:44. > :12:50.barrier. It is the afternoon of random slow-motion replays! We have

:12:50. > :13:00.seen enough of this, we know that cars travel on two wheels over the

:13:00. > :13:09.

:13:09. > :13:18.yellow flag. It is still there, so they need to be careful. Fernando

:13:18. > :13:26.Alonso slows down. It is well off- line. I can understand why nobody

:13:26. > :13:36.wants to hand over there. They have got to scoop it of the -- scoop it

:13:36. > :13:38.

:13:38. > :13:43.up with a broom. It would help Michael Schumacher, 17 seconds off

:13:43. > :13:48.the back of Felipe Massa. No sign of the safety car being called off

:13:48. > :13:53.just yet. We have had it once in this race, because of a couple of

:13:53. > :14:00.accidents on the first corner. It took a while to get the cars out of

:14:00. > :14:06.the way. But since then, it has been a clean run. Into the latter

:14:06. > :14:10.part, although plenty of laps to go. Concentration has to be 100%. They

:14:10. > :14:14.are not only concentrating on threading the car between the

:14:14. > :14:21.barriers, but they are also trying to look after the tyres. The

:14:21. > :14:30.management is so important. Felipe Massa has caught up again to the

:14:30. > :14:35.back of Lewis Hamilton. He is quite close again. They are playing cat

:14:35. > :14:41.and mouse, plenty of this race left. A lot of action could still be

:14:41. > :14:48.played out, drivers getting for teat, the temperature will be 40

:14:48. > :14:58.degrees -- drive is getting for teat end. Although it is relatively

:14:58. > :15:06.

:15:06. > :15:11.after his tyres to attackers at the end of the race. He never set a

:15:11. > :15:19.particularly quick lap time, but he ended up beating Jenson Button and

:15:19. > :15:27.finishing 8th. So, Hamilton is still managing his race, holding on

:15:27. > :15:33.to the 5th position. Massa is in 6th. Schumacher is some way behind.

:15:33. > :15:38.Jean-Eric Vergne might lose out big time. He made a very early pit-stop.

:15:38. > :15:42.Reliability, it doesn't look like we have had any problems so far. In

:15:42. > :15:47.the old days this used to be such a hard track, particularly on the

:15:47. > :15:52.gearbox and the drive shaft. Pretty much the teams seemed to have that

:15:52. > :15:56.fixed? It's just one of those things. The regulations have

:15:56. > :16:00.changed and because of that the gears themselves are physically

:16:00. > :16:05.quite a bit bigger. You weren't allowed to use such exotic

:16:05. > :16:12.materials and such a refined design. It has been much better in terms of

:16:12. > :16:15.reliability because of how quick a car you need. The few years ago, a

:16:15. > :16:20.few could survive to the end you could pick up some points. Nowadays

:16:20. > :16:27.it is not like that, you have to go racing. We still have 19 cars

:16:27. > :16:36.running at the moment. Karthikeyan is the last on the track. But that

:16:36. > :16:43.is still pretty good, the run of cars. We have five out. It was from

:16:43. > :16:47.a pretty early stage. So, Webber. We are on to lap 58. The Australian,

:16:47. > :16:53.commanding this race. Not by a huge margin, because he is still looking

:16:53. > :16:56.after his tyres. Rosberg is in second. Mark Webber is yet to win a

:16:57. > :17:01.Grand Prix this year. He could become the six different winner in

:17:01. > :17:05.six races. If Rosberg were to come through, he would be the first

:17:05. > :17:09.repeat winner of the season. At the moment it doesn't look like Rosberg

:17:09. > :17:14.has an answer. It is the closing stages that will tell the story of

:17:14. > :17:18.how each team has looked after the tyres. You have to wonder if

:17:18. > :17:24.Rosberg will have any answer for Mark Webber in the closing stages.

:17:24. > :17:29.It looks like Mark is starting to extend his gap. Three tenths

:17:29. > :17:34.quicker on the last lap. Rosberg, he really wants to be within the

:17:34. > :17:39.one-second window. Once again, we get that wonderful shot of a car

:17:39. > :17:43.going through the corner on two wheels. He really wants to be

:17:43. > :17:47.within that one second window, if he can, if Mark makes a mistake it

:17:47. > :17:52.keeps a bit of pressure Ron. Psychologically, in the car, if you

:17:52. > :17:58.see the gap easing out ever-so- slightly it gives you strength. It

:17:58. > :18:03.will be interesting to say whether Rosberg can respond and just keep a

:18:03. > :18:08.bit more pressure on the Webber. Looking at Heikki Kovalainen, he's

:18:08. > :18:14.done a great job of staying in front of Jenson Button. They are

:18:14. > :18:24.ganging up behind. Sergio Perez has been so rapid in this race. His

:18:24. > :18:39.

:18:39. > :18:45.fastest lap was 49. 1:17. 02, still air. RADIO: Something on the tyre,

:18:45. > :18:52.I can't tell what it is. Michael. We can see something on

:18:52. > :19:02.the data, but just keep going. is reflected in his lap time, he is

:19:02. > :19:06.

:19:06. > :19:12.think that is an old radio message. Michael, considering he was right

:19:12. > :19:17.there at the beginning of the race, an 18 second gap to this battle, to

:19:17. > :19:22.that man, Massa, at the back. team-mate is still in that group in

:19:22. > :19:27.second place. Alonso, Vettel, still in 4th place having made good use

:19:27. > :19:32.of a slightly different strategy to everybody else. Hamilton and 5th,

:19:32. > :19:40.Massa in 6th. Heikki Kovalainen, that 13th position he is running in,

:19:40. > :19:47.he would actually have matched the team's best performance at Monaco.

:19:47. > :19:52.It seems to be a good track for the team. It could be crucial. We are

:19:52. > :20:02.on board with Hamilton now. How much is he looking after the tyres?

:20:02. > :20:17.

:20:17. > :20:21.front. No, I think he is trying to hustle it. He's trying to look

:20:21. > :20:25.after that tyres, but he doesn't want to give away too much in the

:20:25. > :20:31.braking zone. We are hearing there are some spits of rain for some of

:20:31. > :20:41.the boats in the harbour. It is an uneven surface, as the breakdown

:20:41. > :20:45.and rise up into Sainte Devote. Hamilton is pushing pretty hard. He

:20:45. > :20:55.will not have wanted to do what he dares. He shouldn't lose too much

:20:55. > :21:05.time. Webber is still putting the lapse in. 1:19.8. Rosberg is

:21:05. > :21:11.

:21:11. > :21:17.conditions. And it dried out from a wet start. Rosberg, and the

:21:17. > :21:21.Williams team, they decided to put facts of a car. Nikko, if

:21:21. > :21:26.conditions change, I wonder if it would fall into his lap. Instead,

:21:26. > :21:31.we are running out of laps. If the rain is going to come it will come

:21:31. > :21:35.in the late stages. Massa is still chasing Hamilton. The Ferrari is

:21:35. > :21:40.climbing up the hill, rising some 30 metres in just a few seconds as

:21:40. > :21:46.they climb up to Casino Square. Michael was sounding a bit sick as

:21:46. > :21:52.he passed by. That is Jean-Eric Vergne, chasing him. That is for

:21:52. > :21:55.position. The Toro Rosso is in 8th place. He is putting up no

:21:55. > :22:04.resistance to Jean-Eric. I think he has acknowledged that he has a

:22:04. > :22:08.major problem. A good run for Jean- Eric Vergne. But he stop on lap 17.

:22:08. > :22:17.A huge number of laps if he is to keep this going to the end. At it

:22:17. > :22:22.is indeed. But he's not under that much pressure from Di Resta. That

:22:22. > :22:27.ten-second gap can be eaten up very quickly. But I think that was a

:22:27. > :22:31.very compliant Michael, realising his issue. Good performance from

:22:31. > :22:41.Jean-Eric Vergne. A good performance from Paul Di Resta,

:22:41. > :22:44.Reading in 9th. Raikonnen, just outside the points. The battle for

:22:44. > :22:48.the last point is hotting up as we get to the closing stages of the

:22:48. > :22:52.Grand Prix. Michael is still struggling. He is still running

:22:52. > :22:57.around in 8th place. The car directly behind him had been lapped.

:22:57. > :23:03.He's not about to lose another one. It is the Force Indias not too far

:23:03. > :23:10.behind. It is Di Resta and Hulkenberg that could game if he is

:23:10. > :23:15.forced to come into the pits. No such problems for Nico Rosberg. He

:23:15. > :23:21.is still a second a half behind the it race leader. Further down the

:23:21. > :23:31.order, by the way, outside the top 10, we still have Kovalainen in

:23:31. > :23:43.

:23:43. > :23:48.14th. Sergio Perez is in 16th. Timo will certainly know all about it.

:23:48. > :23:58.The de good thing is, as all of the talk is of the top six running

:23:58. > :24:03.together, they will all being that same boat. Imagine the rain comes

:24:03. > :24:07.as they enter Casino Square, it's not like someone will be 15 or 16

:24:07. > :24:16.seconds behind you, can go into the pits and get a lot of black time by

:24:16. > :24:19.getting on the right tyres. If it rains, they will have to get onto

:24:19. > :24:25.wet tyres, but it will be 18 pit stop bottle rather than what

:24:25. > :24:30.happens on the scurry back to the pits. The Force Indias have caught

:24:30. > :24:40.Michael Schumacher. They are both there, Di Resta and Hun called --

:24:40. > :24:43.

:24:43. > :24:48.go through, will he do the same here? He's very slow on the state -

:24:48. > :24:52.- straight. Schumacher lets Hulkenberg through. The next one

:24:52. > :25:01.will be Kimi Raikonnen. It will put him into the points when he goes

:25:01. > :25:05.past. Let's take a look at this. The Mercedes plates have titanium

:25:05. > :25:10.rubbing strips and it sparks. You can see Michael cruising. The

:25:10. > :25:14.battle up front, we are hearing it is starting to rain at La Rascasse.

:25:14. > :25:20.Some of the spectators are starting to move. Does that indicate they

:25:20. > :25:23.have had enough, or does it tell us they are starting to get what?

:25:23. > :25:29.umbrella going up, that is always the signal. Rosberg is getting a

:25:29. > :25:34.little bit closer to the back. He's got to get down to 0.9 seconds. A

:25:34. > :25:38.mention of Schumacher, there was a bit of contact with Grosjean. I

:25:38. > :25:42.wonder if that had a result on his car. Whether it is not handling

:25:42. > :25:47.well. It does look slow in a straight line, which might relate

:25:47. > :25:52.to a mechanical problem. Gary, what do you think about his car at the

:25:52. > :25:57.moment? I was just looking at the radio traffic. They said they had

:25:57. > :26:01.an engine problem of some sort. He has gone to take away the fuel-

:26:01. > :26:05.saving device they were using, he's using some more fuel and that did

:26:05. > :26:09.not fix it. They told him to use the KERS at the end of the tunnel

:26:09. > :26:14.to try to get the revs up. It is raining, the heaviest it has been

:26:14. > :26:17.today. Michael is into the pits. Will he get back out or is this the

:26:17. > :26:20.end of the race for Michael Schumacher? The fastest man in

:26:20. > :26:25.qualifying, he had to start with a penalty and it's not looking good

:26:25. > :26:28.on the track? I'd get him out of the way quickly if they know he has

:26:28. > :26:32.a problem. We are seeing more and more people putting raincoats on.

:26:32. > :26:35.He doesn't look like anyone will commend this lap. But if Rosberg

:26:35. > :26:43.suddenly said he was coming in, then clearly they are not able to

:26:43. > :26:48.surface the car because they are... Well, they are pushing it back, but

:26:48. > :26:55.it's not going to happen this lap. This is Jensen, having a go at

:26:55. > :27:00.Kovalainen. My goodness, that was close. He goes to defend, which he

:27:00. > :27:02.is allowed to do. He moves in the braking zone. I don't think that

:27:03. > :27:06.was anything more than not realising that Jensen had

:27:06. > :27:16.positioned his car there. You can sense him breathing in as it was

:27:16. > :27:19.

:27:19. > :27:25.getting closer. He was being squeezed by the other car. Michael

:27:25. > :27:30.Schumacher is out off the Monaco Grand Prix. He was fastest on

:27:30. > :27:33.Saturday, but he was ending the race early on Sunday. Now he has to

:27:33. > :27:36.watch his team-mate, certainly looking at a potential podium

:27:36. > :27:42.finish and maybe even better depend on what happens here with the

:27:42. > :27:48.conditions. Quicker through the swimming-pool area. Doesn't look as

:27:48. > :27:51.if the cars are sliding around them. That little spark from the front

:27:51. > :27:57.plate of Nico Rosberg's car, as we have seen on both cars through the

:27:57. > :27:59.weekend. In this situation, way you have a few spots of rain, the

:27:59. > :28:06.pressure is on the lead car. Everyone can use them as a

:28:06. > :28:09.reference. There will be looking to see if he looks at a tyre, is their

:28:09. > :28:18.indication that there is more water on the track? You can see Rosberg

:28:18. > :28:23.taking advantage of that. Vettel, running around in 4th, was eight

:56:11. > :56:15.move, when not to move and how to defend. That is epic stuff, worthy

:56:15. > :56:19.of a potential world champion. I thought he was brilliant. Epic

:56:19. > :56:22.stuff from mark for a second time. He's now only three points behind

:56:22. > :56:27.in the drivers' championship in terms of taking the lead. He showed,

:56:27. > :56:30.as he did a couple of years ago, that he can control the race.

:56:30. > :56:37.depends. He's not quite able to make it last on some of the other

:56:37. > :56:42.circuits. This is his magic moment. He seemed to excel in this kind of

:56:42. > :56:44.situation. Pole position, such a fabulous advantage. He got to the

:56:44. > :56:52.first corner first, kept his way out of the problems and he nailed

:56:52. > :56:58.it. Who needs one extra guest when you can have three? Fresh from the

:56:58. > :57:03.commentary box, congratulations to all of you. Hold the trophy aloft,

:57:03. > :57:07.you have just won the Grand Prix. It's fantastic, to have won for the

:57:07. > :57:11.third year, especially in the conditions. Mark drove an

:57:11. > :57:15.incredible race. It was immaculate, he didn't make any mistakes. In the

:57:15. > :57:20.most difficult circumstances. He was brilliant. You are

:57:20. > :57:23.superstitious, I believe. You never pack a black-tie to go to the

:57:23. > :57:29.Sporting Club to receive the trophy, just in case it tempts fate. You

:57:29. > :57:33.will have to rent one? I will be borrowing yours! A problems there,

:57:33. > :57:42.he doesn't keep a wallet anywhere. He will have to bring your own

:57:42. > :57:46.money as well. Lucky underpants. would love to Askew, as the man who

:57:46. > :57:49.designs the car, is the third year in a row you have managed to design

:57:49. > :57:54.one that has been monstrous around these streets. What do you think?

:57:54. > :57:59.It has been a tricky year trying to understand tyres, get consistency

:57:59. > :58:02.in the car. This is probably the most difficult of all. In those

:58:03. > :58:08.conditions, marked just got the pole and controlled the race. That

:58:08. > :58:11.is vital that we got the one stop race to work. With the

:58:11. > :58:17.competitiveness of the field, we would just have dropped with two.

:58:17. > :58:21.He really mastered that. Great feeling. We are only moments after,

:58:21. > :58:25.and Eddie has got his umbrella out. This is the rain you feared

:58:26. > :58:30.throughout the whole grand prix. How busy were you on the pit wall?

:58:30. > :58:34.It was an intense race. We were not sure if there would be one or two

:58:34. > :58:39.stops. Mark was really disciplined. He made the first one, stretched it

:58:39. > :58:43.out and did what he needed to. Worth Sebastian Vettel being on a

:58:43. > :58:49.different strategy, we were able to use a period in the race to

:58:49. > :58:53.leapfrog him. It was a tactical race, and then tactical when the

:58:53. > :58:58.rain came in. I don't know why he is holding an umbrella, he'll get

:58:58. > :59:01.wet later. One thing for sure, I am not making a visit into the

:59:01. > :59:08.swimming pool. You might do, without me. He already grabbed me

:59:08. > :59:12.and said, don't let me going to the pool. We have been hearing stories

:59:12. > :59:15.about a potential protest in the offing. I said that tends to be the

:59:15. > :59:22.case in Formula One, people protest against Red Bull. There are

:59:22. > :59:31.questions about what other teams believed to be a hole in the rear

:59:31. > :59:35.wheels. The car complies with the regulations, we are happy with that.

:59:36. > :59:39.It's the nature of Formula One that there are complaints went you have

:59:39. > :59:47.a competitive car. Technically, I am convinced and certain that we

:59:47. > :59:51.complied. This first arose after the Bahrain Grand Prix. Other

:59:52. > :59:58.constructor has had a similar feature. We have a letter from the

:59:58. > :00:02.FIA saying categorically that it is legal. We are not concerned. Do you

:00:02. > :00:09.think it is your brilliance, that people seem to have you down about

:00:09. > :00:14.the legality of your car? Well, as Christian said, it is part of the

:00:14. > :00:18.game of Formula One. It is a shame that it has to come up, but I am

:00:18. > :00:24.happy that the FIA and happy and we are happy. Thick-skinned, is that

:00:24. > :00:29.the word? It is when they stop complaining you need to worry, it

:00:29. > :00:33.means you are slow. Just lift the trophy up one last time. That is

:00:33. > :00:37.what you get for winning one of the toughest races. You have done it in

:00:37. > :00:41.changeable conditions. Congratulations. I'm afraid we have

:00:41. > :00:51.to send you into the rain. You lose the umbrella. That you very much.

:00:51. > :00:55.

:00:55. > :00:59.Well done and congratulations. We were worried this rain would

:00:59. > :01:04.come in. It is pouring down now. What would that have done for the

:01:04. > :01:09.Grand Prix? It was a superb display of high-speed driving from all of

:01:09. > :01:15.the drivers. Entertaining Grand Prix. Eddie, thank you for the

:01:15. > :01:21.umbrella. Let's hear from the men who are quickest. Here they are in

:01:21. > :01:28.the driver's press conference. Mark, your second Monaco win. How

:01:28. > :01:33.are you feeling? Feeling incredible, mate. It was an interesting race.

:01:33. > :01:40.Reasonably straightforward at the start. Getting the gap on the

:01:40. > :01:45.super-softs, managing with Nico. We had a gap over the rest. It was

:01:45. > :01:53.just a matter of then trying to get back into a reasonable gap. Also,

:01:53. > :02:00.the weather was threatening around the pit stop. Nikkei went for it.

:02:00. > :02:04.He went early so obviously a few people had to react to his first

:02:04. > :02:14.chess move. The next phase of the race was very strange. It was very

:02:14. > :02:18.hard to get the soft tyre or the hard time in terms of prime time.

:02:18. > :02:22.Said was coming back and the picture with his strategy. We will

:02:22. > :02:29.try and get temperature. At the start of the stint I had very low

:02:29. > :02:33.front grip. I had to try and get things organised and run a --

:02:33. > :02:37.managing Nico and everyone else. Sebastian was thinking it was

:02:37. > :02:42.interesting. I did not want him to get the magic 21 seconds so he

:02:42. > :02:49.could not do the stop and get the victory. I could then concentrate

:02:49. > :02:52.on the Kerrigan. As Fernando said in the car, there were times when

:02:53. > :02:59.he was praying for rain. But then when it started the said he did not

:02:59. > :03:07.want it to rain. The first guy there is always tricky. An amazing

:03:07. > :03:13.day for the team, myself, so I am really happy. A great memory for me,

:03:13. > :03:16.fantastic. Well done. Nico, so close that the end. He tried a

:03:17. > :03:22.number of different things, you probably hoped for the rain as well

:03:22. > :03:25.but in the end it was not to be? Yes, in the beginning it was pretty

:03:25. > :03:33.straightforward. I had a good start but Mark had a good start as well

:03:33. > :03:37.so that was it. Then was a matter of tyre management and everything.

:03:37. > :03:42.I was surprised how strong we were in qualifying and also in the race.

:03:42. > :03:47.For the weekend we probably had the fastest car out there for

:03:47. > :03:50.qualifying and the race. We were making progress all the time.

:03:50. > :03:54.Unfortunately, it did not come together perfectly. P2 could have

:03:54. > :03:59.been P1 but there we are and I am very happy with second place, of

:03:59. > :04:04.course. Got a bit difficult with the rain and the warm-up on hard

:04:04. > :04:09.tyres but I am very pleased. Well done. Fernando, fifth on the grid,

:04:09. > :04:15.third at the finish, you are now in Seoul control of the world

:04:15. > :04:21.championship lead. I was trying to finish in front of Sebastian, in

:04:21. > :04:26.front of Lewis, they were with us in the world championship. If you

:04:26. > :04:30.go race by race you concentrate on different drivers. The next one

:04:30. > :04:34.will be Mark who is second in the championships. It will be

:04:34. > :04:38.interesting all through the season with the constant developing the

:04:39. > :04:45.car and the constant surprises that we have in every race. You never

:04:46. > :04:50.know which one will sit for pole and the race win. Today it was

:04:50. > :04:54.smooth after the start. I had a contact with Grosjean. At that

:04:54. > :04:58.point were thought maybe the car was damaged but the car was

:04:58. > :05:03.perfectly fine so I kept running and I felt good and competitive.

:05:03. > :05:08.But obviously Monaco is difficult with the traffic. I overtook

:05:08. > :05:14.Hamilton at the stop with a perfect time and a perfect pit-stop again.

:05:15. > :05:19.Thanks to the team we are in a privileged position.

:05:19. > :05:23.There is more history made today. The closest top four finish in the

:05:23. > :05:29.history of the Monaco Grand Prix and the man who finishes at the

:05:29. > :05:32.front, congratulations, Mark Webber. A frustrating day for Lewis

:05:32. > :05:36.Hamilton. Felipe Massa will be delighted to finish sixth in this

:05:36. > :05:43.race. You have to feel for the mad he finished in 12th place, Jean-

:05:43. > :05:48.Eric Vergne. He looked like he was on 4.6. He had a bit of a struggle

:05:48. > :05:54.towards the end. -- he was on for points. It was a bit of a race of

:05:54. > :06:04.attrition at the beginning. We will relive the start in a moment and

:06:04. > :06:23.

:06:23. > :06:27.find out why the likes of those stand. We have to say thank you to

:06:27. > :06:31.Marussia or because they have managed to find one of these little

:06:31. > :06:41.10 things. We have stolen it for a couple of seconds. We should praise

:06:41. > :06:43.

:06:44. > :06:48.the small teams, both Marussia and If you are going to make a real

:06:48. > :06:51.impression, it is here. The attrition level is usually very

:06:51. > :06:55.high and you get a chance to scored points. They did not score points

:06:55. > :06:59.today but at least they get themselves in a finish position and

:06:59. > :07:05.that is how they calculate to get the money at the end of the season.

:07:05. > :07:09.A big frustration for Sauber? was indeed. Perez got a drive-

:07:09. > :07:15.through for missing the chicane. A missed opportunity. But in Monaco,

:07:15. > :07:20.it can give you the highest of highs and the lowest of loans.

:07:20. > :07:30.Clearly, they have got the pace to do a better job. Let's have a look

:07:30. > :07:30.

:07:30. > :07:35.through the first corner without a problem but thanks to Michael

:07:35. > :07:43.Schumacher and racing -- Romain Grosjean that was. That was a

:07:43. > :07:48.racing incident. Grosjean moves for the Ferrari. He cuts in front of

:07:48. > :07:53.Michael and pushes Michael. The Mercedes was built strong because

:07:53. > :08:03.he was able to continue and Grosjean Park before he made the

:08:03. > :08:03.

:08:03. > :08:08.apex of turn one. Perhaps on reflection he should have done

:08:08. > :08:16.things differently. They touched wheels. That forced Grosjean to

:08:16. > :08:22.react. There was a similar incident in 1995 when I was positioned

:08:22. > :08:29.between two Ferraris. Michael goes left and contact is made and the

:08:29. > :08:34.incident begins. There goes Michael of up the hill. This is the start

:08:34. > :08:44.from Sebastian Vettel's point of view. Starting night. That is not

:08:44. > :08:46.

:08:46. > :08:52.something he is used to starting so far down. Just take a look at Kamui

:08:52. > :08:58.Kobayashi and give us your thoughts as they start to unfold. Up in the

:08:58. > :09:02.air. How would that feel? It hurts when you land. You were not worried

:09:02. > :09:08.about the suspension when you are in the air, you are worried about

:09:08. > :09:16.the landing. You can see from on board. This is Pastor Maldonado.

:09:16. > :09:21.This is what happened with Pedro de la Rosa. I think he was just

:09:21. > :09:24.wrapping up what was a pretty messy weekend for him. When you start

:09:24. > :09:31.that far down, you are already in trouble. To ram into the back of

:09:31. > :09:36.HRT, but will not be nice result. This is a helmet can. Is this

:09:36. > :09:42.genuinely how it feels? If your eyes are all of set where your

:09:42. > :09:50.right ear is, that is what you see. Clearly, the camera is a bit of set.

:09:50. > :09:54.It is instinctive. You can put some on the track and run them Raglan

:09:54. > :09:58.enough to do a lap time but you cannot make an instinctive racer.

:09:58. > :10:03.That is what the great champions have, that instinctive ability.

:10:03. > :10:07.can see at the start of the race how much time Paul is spending

:10:07. > :10:12.checking the mirrors to make sure no one is attacking. You have to

:10:12. > :10:17.keep checking because you do not get a lot of vision in the small

:10:18. > :10:21.mirror. You have to focus on the brake and focus on the apex.

:10:21. > :10:25.Incredible. I think what all of those runs have shown us, Eddie,

:10:25. > :10:29.you can say what wonderful driving it is from a certain person but

:10:29. > :10:34.actually, all the drivers are so close at a time to having an

:10:34. > :10:39.incident. If anyone had gone into a flying Kamui Kobayashi, there would

:10:39. > :10:44.be a problem. The margin of error and also the margin of luck in a

:10:44. > :10:48.situation like that, yes, I know the scale and intuition, call it

:10:48. > :10:52.what you like, but you have to be very lucky to get away with that.

:10:52. > :11:02.You saw Sebastian Vettel, how close was he to collecting Grosjean's

:11:02. > :11:06.car? Grosjean's sliding. If he had released the brakes it would have

:11:06. > :11:11.gone forwards or backwards. You are in the lap of the racing gods at

:11:11. > :11:15.that moment. Let's have a look at Jenson Button's pit stop which

:11:15. > :11:20.caused him serious problems in the race because it brought him out

:11:20. > :11:24.behind Heikki Kovalainen. He was behind Heikki before that stop

:11:24. > :11:31.after what happened at the start. By the time he gets his way to the

:11:31. > :11:37.end of the pit lane, Heikki comes across. He comes across over the

:11:37. > :11:42.yellow line which she is able to do. Then he gets a great drive off. The

:11:42. > :11:46.frustration for Jenson, just missed it by the smallest of margins. If

:11:46. > :11:50.they have managed another four metres he would have come out in

:11:51. > :11:54.front of the Caterham Car. That led to an incident later in the race.

:11:54. > :12:00.think it is time to put the umbrella up and go for a wonderful

:12:00. > :12:08.stop the umbrella is your responsibility. I have to say, I am

:12:08. > :12:12.very impressed with Marussia. want to drown you actually!

:12:12. > :12:19.Marussia at are the only team who have decided to put up these tense

:12:19. > :12:23.so congratulations to them. HRT had an amazing admission from Pedro de

:12:23. > :12:27.la Rosa who started from the back but said it was his best ever lap

:12:27. > :12:35.around Monaco. It shows you how much they are struggling. I think

:12:35. > :12:38.he did a respectable job. I think HRT have put in place, after a very

:12:38. > :12:42.difficult debut in Formula One, there have put in place a very

:12:42. > :12:47.small structure and they are making them wait -- making their way

:12:48. > :12:53.towards being respectable. Very quickly, Caterham, an impressive

:12:54. > :13:01.day? Yes, it was impressive. We were talking that toughness. I

:13:01. > :13:06.think Caterham showed the front wing, I do not know how it stayed

:13:06. > :13:11.on, it was remarkable that it stayed together. Absolutely. A look

:13:11. > :13:16.like it was not generating much downforce in the first place.

:13:16. > :13:25.Senna's garage there, well done to him for picking up points but

:13:25. > :13:29.frustrating for his team mate, Pastor. It is a frustrating weekend

:13:29. > :13:37.for him. It has been an expensive couple of Grand Prix is between

:13:37. > :13:42.what happened for Williams with the fire and the accident.

:13:42. > :13:47.unceremonious way to take the car back to the garage. Jean-Eric

:13:47. > :13:52.Vergne's garage, a walk past him earlier, he had a face like thunder.

:13:52. > :13:55.A valid attempt to try and jump the cars in front? Yes, the team took a

:13:56. > :13:59.gamble. If it had worked out that the rain would have come they could

:13:59. > :14:03.have ended up winning so how amazing with that have been? You

:14:03. > :14:08.have to see the bigger picture. I understand his frustration that he

:14:08. > :14:11.drove very well today. That will not be lost on the team. It is an

:14:11. > :14:14.interesting team battle between Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniel

:14:14. > :14:20.Ricciardo because whoever comes our strongest might have a future at

:14:20. > :14:25.Red Bull. Well done to Paul di Resta. I thought he drove an

:14:25. > :14:30.extremely mature race. He struggled, in my opinion, behind Hulkenberg,

:14:30. > :14:34.his team-mate for along part of that race but with various other

:14:34. > :14:38.aspects, he managed the situation better than anyone else around him

:14:38. > :14:43.in the team and to finish when he finished, seventh, is a remarkable

:14:43. > :14:47.finish and a great boost for the team. That is the car that caused

:14:47. > :14:50.all the incidents at the start of the race, the car belonging to rain

:14:50. > :14:54.and Grosjean. You cannot be moving cars around here while the Grand

:14:55. > :14:59.Prix is going on. Jenson Button did not fare too well either. He ended

:14:59. > :15:08.up further down the pack and was caught up in the incident which

:15:08. > :15:18.slowed him down and he had a pretty I imagine you are getting sick of

:15:18. > :15:18.

:15:18. > :15:27.the site of Kovalainen's wink, and then it cost you the race? Yes,

:15:27. > :15:31.it's very difficult. It's part of racing, but it is so frustrating

:15:31. > :15:35.when you are so much quicker than the car in front. I spun off and

:15:35. > :15:41.then caught him in two laps. It is one of those things. It comes from

:15:41. > :15:45.bad qualifying. Being unlucky, really, at the start. But that is

:15:45. > :15:50.because we got placed so far back. We are more prone to incidents. I

:15:50. > :15:54.got stuck on the outside of Sainte Devote and I couldn't really come

:15:54. > :16:01.back from that. A tough afternoon. I want to say congratulations to

:16:01. > :16:05.mark. He's a good lad. 6th winner, it livens up the championship quite

:16:05. > :16:11.a bit. Their day is today, hopefully we can fight back sooner,

:16:11. > :16:19.rather than later, to have our day again. OK, Jenson Button feeling

:16:19. > :16:23.rather frustrated. What about Lewis Hamilton's day? We heard him on the

:16:23. > :16:26.team radio, being very vocal. He groaned about the start of the race.

:16:26. > :16:31.Can you just explain what Lewis Hamilton was talking about when he

:16:31. > :16:35.said, what was wrong with my start, guys? He started to third and he

:16:35. > :16:39.was third as they went through Sainte Devote. He had designs on

:16:39. > :16:45.gaining some places. If you have been psyche yourself up, which you

:16:45. > :16:50.will be, to maximising the start, you are going to be disappointed.

:16:50. > :16:53.It's quite remarkable, when you consider he has been doing anything

:16:53. > :16:57.wrong. He had some great pace. But the McLaren performance was

:16:57. > :17:00.slipping away. This was a track where they have historically been

:17:01. > :17:09.very strong in the past. This is what he thinks of today's Grand

:17:09. > :17:18.Was that a frustrating day, in the end? It wasn't frustrating, it

:17:18. > :17:24.was... It wasn't the best result. But this is motor racing. I really

:17:24. > :17:28.dislike going backwards. None the less, we still came away with some

:17:28. > :17:32.points. There are many, many more races ahead of us. We just have to

:17:32. > :17:38.keep our heads up and keep pushing. Where do you think it was lost?

:17:38. > :17:42.Well, my start was one of the worst that I have had in a long time.

:17:42. > :17:47.heard you on the team radio, sounding puzzled? I just don't

:17:47. > :17:51.understand why it happens, when the two dies next to me and the guys

:17:51. > :17:59.behind me got perfect starts. I was fortunate not to get caught in a

:17:59. > :18:02.crash. It's quite an easy thing, we start thousands of times throughout

:18:02. > :18:09.the year. It should not be a problem. After that, I don't know

:18:09. > :18:15.how long my pit stop was. But I lost quite a lot of time. I wasn't

:18:15. > :18:22.able to keep up, really, worth Alonso. Sebastian got me through

:18:22. > :18:27.his pit stop. It's impossible to overtake, as you can see. We heard
