:02:28. > :02:34.You know what, the cars on track will be louder and larger than that

:02:34. > :02:37.one! It is a reminder, that toy car, that this race isn't just about the

:02:37. > :02:42.money flooding into this island at the moment, but it is also about

:02:42. > :02:48.inspiring the next generation of young drivers here in Asia.

:02:48. > :02:53.Alongside me is David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan. Two months and two

:02:53. > :02:57.days this season is over. There is a feeling of electricity in the air,

:02:57. > :03:00.isn't there? There is. We saw what happened to Red Bull, we saw what

:03:00. > :03:04.happened to McLaren. They have to get their act together. This is

:03:04. > :03:07.where all the teams push like crazy to go on to try and win this

:03:07. > :03:12.Championship. David, you know over the years that this is a tough race

:03:12. > :03:17.to compete in? It is. It is tough on everyone. It is tough on the

:03:17. > :03:22.mechanics, on the engineers. This will be a real test of the

:03:22. > :03:25.reliability of these cars. That has started to show in the last couple

:03:25. > :03:30.of races. What a hard place to do it here. The driver will be pushed

:03:30. > :03:35.to the limit. It is a good example that the boys at the front are

:03:35. > :03:39.trying to get the nth degree out of these cars at the moment. Whether

:03:39. > :03:42.it is securing the agreement for Formula One, whether it is securing

:03:42. > :03:49.the future of certain circuits - everything has to be decided in the

:03:49. > :03:55.next eight weeks. It is great? have just heard about Singapore,

:03:55. > :03:59.five more years here. It is one of the treasures. The agreement is

:03:59. > :04:05.agreed. It will be announced shortly. That is another issue out

:04:05. > :04:08.of the way. Things are in place. love that! The men who are in the

:04:08. > :04:10.hunt for the Championship will know that the next seven races, in the

:04:10. > :04:16.that the next seven races, in the next nine weeks, will determine

:04:16. > :04:26.everything. The push to the finish in Brazil on 25th November starts

:04:26. > :04:59.

:04:59. > :05:02.You know what - it looks magical from the sky! Eddie, in all the

:05:02. > :05:07.years you have been involved in Formula One, you have seen circuits

:05:07. > :05:13.come and go. Rarely has a new track captured people like this one?

:05:13. > :05:16.were all hugely sceptical when we heard about night racing. That was

:05:16. > :05:25.new territory. We often ridicule them for doing strange things.

:05:25. > :05:29.Bernie has unbelievable vision. To come here to put on a show better

:05:29. > :05:34.than anywhere else in the world, Singapore has done it. You drove

:05:34. > :05:39.here once and thought, "I'm going to retire so I can enjoy the

:05:39. > :05:45.parties in Singapore!" There is a big party scene here. I can hear

:05:45. > :05:51.them still going at 4.00am in the morning! You were at the party?

:05:51. > :05:57.was in bed! That is not the David Coulthard we know. Thank you(!) In

:05:57. > :06:01.terms of - Bernie was almost crazy to bring us here under the lights.

:06:01. > :06:07.They are almost four times stronger than the lights at a football

:06:07. > :06:10.stadium. This backdrop is spectacular. It is. It is a true

:06:10. > :06:14.spectacle. In less than an hour, the cars will be under the lights

:06:14. > :06:17.looking to claim pole position and pole is so important around this

:06:17. > :06:21.street track. Despite the great things about Singapore, yesterday

:06:21. > :06:23.the provisional calendar for 2013 the provisional calendar for 2013

:06:23. > :06:29.was released. This is how it looks. The one big headline in terms of

:06:29. > :06:34.the races, if you have a look at Race 8, we will be going to New

:06:34. > :06:38.Jersey. However, when this was released, three of these were

:06:38. > :06:42.subject to confirmation. There's been plenty of questions about

:06:42. > :06:46.whether New Jersey will be ready. We can understand that. South Korea,

:06:46. > :06:49.Race 16, plenty of questions about their financial muscle and whether

:06:49. > :06:53.they can continue to afford to be in Formula One. What about

:06:53. > :06:56.Singapore? This was also subject to confirmation. It transpired they

:06:57. > :07:00.were deep in negotiations about extending the contract here. Well,

:07:00. > :07:07.moments ago, there was a big announcement. We are staying here

:07:07. > :07:11.for a little bit longer. Lee caught up with the Deputy Chairman of the

:07:11. > :07:16.Singapore Grand Prix. You have signed a five-year deal.

:07:16. > :07:21.What was hanging in the balance. What was hanging in the balance.

:07:21. > :07:29.It's been done this minute? This is Saturday. We have been working on

:07:29. > :07:35.it since Friday - Thursday. There was just little detailing. We had

:07:35. > :07:40.to make sure we had the right time to announce it. Tonight, 7.00pm,

:07:40. > :07:49.was the perfect time for us to announce it. There was a lot of

:07:49. > :07:56.hard work. As you know, we have a very good working relationship with

:07:56. > :08:01.Mr E. He was able to smooth the way for us a little bit. So it was a

:08:01. > :08:04.joint effort to get it done so quickly. Tell us - this has been a

:08:04. > :08:09.relatively new race in Formula One terms. It has become a very

:08:09. > :08:14.important one. How important is it for Singapore? Well, I think the

:08:14. > :08:17.branding is very important. In the five years we have been doing the

:08:17. > :08:22.Grand Prix, we have put Singapore on the world map, you know. It is

:08:22. > :08:25.from a little red dot, to a big great dot. You know how small

:08:25. > :08:31.Singapore is. Will we see any changes to the track over the next

:08:31. > :08:36.few years? We are looking into it. I think a little change will

:08:36. > :08:44.obviously be good, it will improve the race. Every year we have to do

:08:44. > :08:48.better. We will do some changes, but they won't be major. The track

:08:48. > :08:54.has run very well. I don't see where we can change tremendously.

:08:54. > :08:57.Thank you very much. Well done. Thank you.

:08:57. > :09:04.The ever-evolving Formula One merry-go-round keeps on turning.

:09:04. > :09:09.You can see how much effort they go to to make this place look special.

:09:09. > :09:16.This does more for Formula One than Formula One does for it. How hard

:09:16. > :09:19.would Singapore have been working to thrash out a deal for them

:09:19. > :09:24.rather than Bernie Ecclestone? course, Bernie is saying to the

:09:24. > :09:29.teams, "Hey, it is my obligation to get you as much working capital as

:09:29. > :09:34.you can get." I wouldn't want to be too long in a big fight with Bernie.

:09:34. > :09:37.He comes out winner more often than not. David, you will be back here

:09:37. > :09:43.in 12 months for the Singapore Grand Prix. There was a mention

:09:44. > :09:50.about changes to the track. Would drivers like to see some things

:09:50. > :09:55.altered? The Grand Prix Drivers' Association said they felt it was

:09:55. > :10:01.at its limit because of the heat in the cockpit and the humidity. Now,

:10:01. > :10:04.you could argue - and I would say that a Grand Prix should be

:10:04. > :10:10.challenging mentally and physically - so it should be like every other

:10:10. > :10:15.race. The only thing that needs changing is the Mickey Mouse

:10:15. > :10:18.chicane. It is a botched corner to fulfil the run-off they have in

:10:18. > :10:27.that area. Everything else is fantastic. What would you do there?

:10:27. > :10:34.I would make a 90-degree left- hander. You could do that. We have

:10:34. > :10:41.seen cars go off there and it is not elegant to see a Grand Prix car

:10:41. > :10:45.bouncing over high kerbs at 90mph! Whatever was going on, there were

:10:45. > :10:48.sparks flying here at the circuit as they thrashed out that deal with

:10:48. > :10:51.Bernie Ecclestone. That is not the only place sparks have been flying

:10:51. > :10:58.this weekend. Long before qualifying gets under way, the cars

:10:58. > :11:03.have been on track and they have been very busy indeed.

:11:04. > :11:08.Practise on Friday began in damp daylight. Mercedes were off the

:11:08. > :11:12.pace. Fernando Alonso was fourth while both McLarens were on the

:11:12. > :11:15.pace. Lewis Hamilton beaten by a few hundredths of a second by

:11:15. > :11:20.Sebastian Vettel who won from pole position here 12 months ago. Second

:11:20. > :11:24.practise was held at the same time of night as the race will be. Bruno

:11:24. > :11:30.Senna clipped the wall and ended his session. Hamilton was trying

:11:30. > :11:34.hard on the super-soft tyres. Most teams experimented with both grades

:11:34. > :11:40.of Pirelli. Sebastian Vettel set the pace after a positive day for

:11:40. > :11:47.some, less so for others. I think most importantly the car seemed to

:11:47. > :11:53.work on either tyre. Not entirely happy with the balance on the softs.

:11:53. > :11:57.The lap was not great. A lot of front locking. We have been trying

:11:57. > :12:03.to find a balance and it is still not there. The guys have done a

:12:03. > :12:06.great job. Feels a lot different to the last race where we had a lot

:12:06. > :12:12.less downforce. It's great to be able to throw the car around a

:12:12. > :12:17.little bit more. Practise three took place earlier today and Sergio

:12:17. > :12:20.Perez slapped the wall in the Sauber, but Sebastian Vettel

:12:20. > :12:25.maintained his 100% record of topping every practise session, one

:12:25. > :12:29.that was brought to an early conclusion by another wall-slap,

:12:29. > :12:34.this time the Caterham of Vitaly Petrov.

:12:34. > :12:40.We will speak to Bruno Senna in a moment. It shows you, David, when

:12:40. > :12:46.they start trying to push to get some qualifying lap times in, it is

:12:46. > :12:53.still a slippery track? On any Grand Prix track, that lap is the

:12:53. > :12:59.first time go as fast as that. You open your DRS on a hot lap, who

:12:59. > :13:03.knows what is going to happen. have been told that Vitaly Petrov's

:13:03. > :13:10.car will be ready to take part in qualifying. Bruno is over here.

:13:10. > :13:13.Lovely to see you. We went to Chinatown at 4.00am and you were

:13:13. > :13:16.having some food. We exist in European time out here in

:13:16. > :13:21.Singapore! It must be a strange experience for you to be eating

:13:21. > :13:26.meals at such odd times? It is a bit of a different experience from

:13:26. > :13:29.everything else. You have to keep yourself entertained otherwise it

:13:29. > :13:36.is difficult to stay up until 6.00am. Psychologically, you start

:13:37. > :13:43.to feel a bit tired, a bit sleepy. So it's what you have to do. Good

:13:43. > :13:47.food? Yeah. Are you under pressure for your seat next year? I think

:13:47. > :13:51.everybody who doesn't have a contract for the following year is

:13:51. > :13:57.under pressure. My objective is to do the best job I can right now and

:13:57. > :14:04.we will see what happens. We saw a number of drivers drop the ball in

:14:04. > :14:14.free practise three, you got it out of the way on Friday. Unfortunately,

:14:14. > :14:15.

:14:15. > :14:18.I lost a long run yesterday. Not an ideal scenario. I was coming on a

:14:18. > :14:22.good lap and you are pushing the limits. Sometimes you make a

:14:22. > :14:26.mistake. I thought I was going to get away with that. I had a gentle

:14:26. > :14:30.nudge on the wall. It was a concrete wall and that damaged the

:14:30. > :14:35.car. Today, I was equally confident. I was close to the wall in many

:14:35. > :14:45.places. It's going better. I think we have found a bit more in the car.

:14:45. > :14:47.

:14:47. > :14:51.Hopefully, it will be tough to be When you think about Williams or

:14:51. > :14:58.other chains, how crucial is that to get that qualifying on Saturday

:14:58. > :15:03.sorted? It is important to get it sorted but finishing in the points

:15:04. > :15:06.consistently is also important and getting everything right in

:15:06. > :15:11.qualifying is a bit of a learning curve and I think sometimes I have

:15:11. > :15:15.not got that quite right. But in the race it is important to show

:15:15. > :15:19.good performance and I have shown good performance in many races and

:15:19. > :15:24.it's good to score more points, obviously, but putting everything

:15:24. > :15:29.together in the first four years is at stake thing to ask. And there

:15:29. > :15:34.are still seven races to go and I hope that I can have a nice end to

:15:34. > :15:39.the season and just be more chilled. I know you are confident of making

:15:39. > :15:45.the top 10 this weekend so fingers crossed when qualifying gets going.

:15:45. > :15:55.One of the reasons Bruno has been catching his team-mates is

:15:55. > :16:07.

:16:07. > :16:17.consistency, including last time of Jenson Button. He is off, onto

:16:17. > :16:17.

:16:17. > :16:22.the grass. But in having a go for second place. He has it complete.

:16:22. > :16:30.Side by side! And Sebastien Vettel is still just ahead as they come

:16:30. > :16:39.down the pit lane. He is on the grass! And he gets back on. He will

:16:39. > :16:47.be even more angry, now. That was a scary ride. The McLaren has a

:16:47. > :16:52.problem, Jenson Button is out of the Italian Grand Prix. Here comes

:16:52. > :17:01.Perez. He has got himself side by side with Kimi Raikkonen. Lovely

:17:01. > :17:10.move. That was such a late moment. Great stuff from Perez. Perez looks

:17:10. > :17:18.like he is going to go past. Very sensibly, he will not get involved.

:17:18. > :17:24.TEAM RADIO: Stopped the car! Sebastien Vettel is out! He has had

:17:24. > :17:30.a moment coming out of that chicane. Webber is cruising. He isn't going

:17:30. > :17:36.to get the points. Short shifting his way home. Lewis Hamilton wins

:17:36. > :17:42.the Italian Grand Prix but Perez has been the start, finishing in

:17:42. > :17:46.second for Sauber. How incredible was that? Very different experience

:17:46. > :17:56.here in Singapore or and under the lights this is a good example from

:17:56. > :18:00.And this is one of the latest and greatest. Let's look at the

:18:01. > :18:07.standings after that last race. It is an exciting time for the drivers

:18:08. > :18:13.and constructors. McLaren have picked up three when's recently and

:18:13. > :18:19.without anyone since July, Fernando Alonso has only had his lead cut by

:18:19. > :18:23.three points in the last two races. Jenson Button's realistic hopes

:18:23. > :18:28.disappeared in Italy. Kimi Raikkonen, in the hunt on his

:18:28. > :18:33.return. Red Bull picked up no point in at Monza for the first time in

:18:33. > :18:38.73 races and Mercedes, 5th place in the championship, they are under

:18:38. > :18:44.threat from Sauber. If Sauber can take Mercedes, that would be quite

:18:44. > :18:51.the story? There would be a lot of crying and gnashing of teeth in

:18:51. > :18:56.Stuttgart. Sauber are one of the darlings of Formula One and he is

:18:56. > :19:00.finding another gear. He has great young drivers and it is so exciting

:19:00. > :19:05.but also invigorating and this is making the championship so

:19:05. > :19:11.interesting. Fantastic for Sauber but not so good for Red Bull and we

:19:11. > :19:17.want to find Christian Horner. He is always busy. Do you want to

:19:17. > :19:22.speak to us? Christian, what have you done since the last race? What

:19:22. > :19:26.have you done to make sure you will be in good shape? We obviously had

:19:26. > :19:32.a good look at what was feeling and we worked with Renault to find some

:19:32. > :19:42.solution to understand the problem and hopefully not see it again.

:19:42. > :19:43.

:19:43. > :19:49.You're amazing in Singapore. Can you recreate that and go on or is

:19:49. > :19:52.it to far ahead of you? Seven races to go. Both drivers are still very

:19:52. > :19:57.much in this championship and we need a good result here and we're

:19:57. > :20:02.just going to go for it. We will attack every race every weekend and

:20:02. > :20:05.get the most we can. You have been going for it so far, Sebastian

:20:05. > :20:10.Vettel topping every session in practice. The first time since

:20:10. > :20:15.China last year. The car looks great and Jenson Button says you

:20:15. > :20:19.are the biggest threat to pole position? But Farran looks strong,

:20:19. > :20:23.practice does not mean a great deal until the end of Saturday afternoon.

:20:23. > :20:26.And I am sure there was something that Jenson Button will be strong

:20:27. > :20:31.and Lotus will be there and Fernando Alonso, he is always

:20:31. > :20:36.strong here. The drivers enjoy the track, Sebastien has always

:20:36. > :20:41.excelled here. Hopefully we can have a strong afternoon. You have

:20:41. > :20:44.to win here? We need to beat Fernando and Lewis Hamilton and

:20:44. > :20:50.Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen...! We need to get a

:20:50. > :20:56.great result. We just have to have a very strong again. Sounds like it

:20:56. > :21:05.will be tough but good luck. Red Bull are strong, according to

:21:05. > :21:10.McLaren. Mutual appreciation. David is with Martin what Marsh. You have

:21:10. > :21:16.been in the air conditioning. It is hotting up? Seven races to go. You

:21:16. > :21:20.have won the last three races. Pressure must be building? This

:21:20. > :21:25.championship is yours to win or lose. We have had three great races

:21:25. > :21:29.and three when's. This is the road course and we have not been as

:21:29. > :21:33.strong as he wanted to on these circuits but hopefully we can put

:21:34. > :21:38.that right this we can. This is the time when the driver knows, Mark

:21:38. > :21:43.was incredibly lucky this morning in my opinion. But anyone, that

:21:43. > :21:46.hard bang on the barrier, and you're out of qualifying. And the

:21:46. > :21:52.championship can slip away. We are in for a fantastic season with

:21:52. > :21:58.seven races and great circuits. Probably, it will go down to Brazil.

:21:58. > :22:02.That sort of the season. And the tension will be sky-high. In the

:22:02. > :22:06.meantime, anybody who makes that's it and makes a mistake, be it the

:22:06. > :22:10.man with the wheelgun or the man with the tyres in his hands or the

:22:10. > :22:15.mechanic build in the car, that can cost the championship. It is tense

:22:15. > :22:23.but exciting. The mentioned everyone except the management.

:22:23. > :22:27.Presumably they are devoid of any blame?! If it is any of the above,

:22:27. > :22:33.the management take the blame and usually get fired! You have been

:22:33. > :22:39.there for many years. Why have the Curran not been so strong on the

:22:39. > :22:43.straight circuits? We have just been... We have been overheating

:22:43. > :22:47.the rear tyres. That was low attraction. Putting too much

:22:47. > :22:51.surface heat into the rear tyres. We think we know that and we will

:22:51. > :22:55.find out and put that to the test and we have been working hard on

:22:55. > :22:59.looking after the rear tyres. In the last three races, we have been

:22:59. > :23:06.bringing more downforce to the car and we have better traction here

:23:06. > :23:11.and perhaps in Monaco. So, I think Red Bull have got the step here and

:23:11. > :23:16.Mercedes and Ferrari look strong. Fernando looks strong. It will be a

:23:16. > :23:22.really tight session. I do not know who welcome out on top. Our men are

:23:22. > :23:28.capable of being a the front row but so are others. But the others,

:23:28. > :23:32.who is the most likely to join you in the top three? Sebastian Vettel,

:23:32. > :23:36.you must look at the statistics. Three practice sessions and he has

:23:36. > :23:40.been quickest in all of them. It doesn't take a genius to say that

:23:40. > :23:45.he looks very strong. Fernando Alonso is the other one. Those are

:23:45. > :23:50.the men who will be competing with Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton

:23:50. > :23:58.for the front row. But also, as you know, it is very easy to get the

:23:58. > :24:04.traffic and hit some barrier and not even be there at the end. Q 3

:24:04. > :24:08.is very tense. You can just make that slip and the weekend is a

:24:08. > :24:13.disaster thereafter. We wish you a pleasant ease and -- pleasant

:24:14. > :24:18.evening. In just over 90 minutes, the answers to these questions will

:24:18. > :24:21.have been realised, whether it is McLaren, Red Bull or anyone, they

:24:21. > :24:25.wonder that the points will be awarded at the circuit but perhaps

:24:25. > :24:29.the championship will be won and lost back at the factory. They are

:24:29. > :24:35.constantly update in the cars with the push to the final season. Let's

:24:35. > :24:38.get a close-up look at what the teams are doing to be champion...

:24:38. > :24:41.The development off the track has been just as important as on the

:24:41. > :24:45.track. Mercedes came along with that revised package and got more

:24:45. > :24:50.wing elements on the front wing, back in a list that order package

:24:50. > :24:54.was there and they lost detail on the side parts, going on to the

:24:54. > :24:59.diffuser details. These are those, the hot air going into the rear

:24:59. > :25:04.tyres, that seals the diffuser. Creating more downforce and under

:25:04. > :25:08.acceleration. To enable Fernando Alonso to hang on to that lead,

:25:08. > :25:14.Ferrari brought to a more wings. But it does not create as much

:25:14. > :25:18.downforce. This one, more downforce, so were on the straight. When you

:25:18. > :25:22.put one of these on to the car, you must balance that with the front

:25:22. > :25:25.wing. Look at this assembly, the rear flap is adjustable and they

:25:25. > :25:29.are just ankles a degree for the front wing flaps so the mechanic

:25:29. > :25:35.knows which angle to set to get the balance. Which development will

:25:35. > :25:38.work? We will have to wait until Sunday afternoon. They are working

:25:38. > :25:40.really hard to make sure these cars are ready for the fight for the end

:25:40. > :25:44.of the championship and this weekend the drivers are also

:25:44. > :25:50.working hard to make sure they are cool under the heat. Let's look at

:25:50. > :25:54.some of these goodies. First, let's go back in time. This is the way

:25:54. > :26:00.they were cooling drivers back in 1978, the year that I was born. And

:26:00. > :26:04.these photographs provided by Terry Anderson. James Hunt's McLaren.

:26:04. > :26:09.Cool water being pumped through to the driver in the cockpit. That was

:26:10. > :26:14.a small box at the back of the car. This is one way. How about this?

:26:14. > :26:18.Gary, in the pit lane, pouring cold water on to the overalls of James

:26:18. > :26:23.Hunt to make sure he does not get hot. How things have changed. Can

:26:23. > :26:28.you explain the stuff we have got to? You were involved when these

:26:28. > :26:32.updates were happening all the time. How important was it to stay cool?

:26:32. > :26:36.Crucial. The average internal temperature is 37 degrees and the

:26:36. > :26:41.drivers will be at 40 degrees during the race, that would put

:26:42. > :26:48.most people in hospital. Here we have some dry ice. Below the

:26:48. > :26:53.temperature of freezing. Hold your hand out... No, thank you! So cold

:26:53. > :26:58.and that is down the side of the seats, cooling the kidneys. But

:26:58. > :27:02.Rosenthal, you will hold that. The drivers will have that on the grid.

:27:02. > :27:07.Robert around the neck. And of course, you can see Jenson Button

:27:07. > :27:15.were in this, this is full of dry ice packs. When he puts that on, it

:27:15. > :27:20.draws the heat from the body, to maintain the core body temperature.

:27:21. > :27:24.Did you not invent that? I did but Jarno Trulli has taken the credit.

:27:24. > :27:28.They would take as much fluid as they can, drinking six metres on

:27:28. > :27:37.Sunday morning, a lot of that passes through the system but lots

:27:37. > :27:41.will be retained and the flowers don't get that. Many are sweaty,

:27:41. > :27:46.you still get that cobble when you give the girls on lovely flowers?

:27:46. > :27:50.And there are real. When running the team, how much did you cared

:27:50. > :27:54.about the drivers staying cool? They must have been saying, this is

:27:54. > :27:59.too hot and you just want a performance and.? There were a

:27:59. > :28:05.couple of things. The cockpit was much more open. Now, there are

:28:05. > :28:08.different structures and different things and we were less concerned

:28:08. > :28:12.about the driver as such because he was much cooler but the radiator

:28:12. > :28:18.was taken away and the hot air was taken away so he would get that

:28:18. > :28:25.cold air. It is much more difficult now. It is more enclosed and the He

:28:25. > :28:28.process within the car is hugely demanding for the driver. We are

:28:28. > :28:34.standing out here and we're wearing a short-sleeved shirts and we are

:28:34. > :28:40.sweating. Paul di Resta last year, we shall see him on the track later,

:28:40. > :28:46.and asked about the drink. How nice as this? He said, 20 laps, that is

:28:46. > :28:50.like a hot cup of tea. They don't have that trick system. This is

:28:50. > :28:55.just one that McLaren drivers use walking around. Half a litre, ate

:28:55. > :29:01.their lucky. Because that is wait and 10 kilos will cost three-tenths

:29:01. > :29:04.of a second round a lap. The teams do not want that. The driver is to

:29:04. > :29:08.be strong and fit but that is why they do all of that triathlon

:29:08. > :29:12.training. They get out early to do the training in the heat of the day.

:29:12. > :29:18.To make sure they can handle that for two hours. How did Adrian have

:29:18. > :29:23.reacted to it you said you wanted one gallon of water? Out of my

:29:23. > :29:29.office! What is it really like in the cockpit? We can speculate. What

:29:29. > :29:32.does it feel like? In the summer, when you think, that is enough. And

:29:32. > :29:36.other people out there and you feel that you don't want to be the first

:29:36. > :29:40.person to leave. It is at that point, when it is just enough, but

:29:40. > :29:45.you have to stay with that for the next hour. You would not do that

:29:45. > :29:54.for the fact that it was the carrot for winning the Grand Prix. And

:29:54. > :30:01.You better put them back in JB's room!

:30:01. > :30:11.Plenty still to talk about before qualifying gets going here. Here is

:30:11. > :30:14.Lee McKenzie with the latest Fernando Alonso has been talking

:30:14. > :30:20.about who he thinks will be his team-mate next year and what skills

:30:20. > :30:26.he would need to bring to the job. We need to have a driver that

:30:26. > :30:33.respects Ferrari, that respects the tradition of this team and that we

:30:33. > :30:38.work for the team, for the red cars. If the team decides to change

:30:38. > :30:46.Felipe, someone that arrives has to be better than him. His good friend

:30:46. > :30:52.made a winning return to rallying two weeks' ago. Last weekend, he

:30:52. > :30:56.crashed out in the Italian Dollomites. If he wants to come

:30:56. > :31:05.back to Formula One, you cannot be in hospital and then jump in

:31:05. > :31:10.Formula One, you need to wake up your driving skills. Despite being

:31:10. > :31:18.on the podium three times this season, one person who has been

:31:18. > :31:23.ruled out of the Ferrari job is Sergio Perez. Now the rumour mill

:31:23. > :31:26.links him to McLaren. They are rumours. Every time I do a good

:31:26. > :31:33.race, they put me with a different team. The most important thing is

:31:33. > :31:37.to keep focus for the next race. After neither Red Bull finished in

:31:37. > :31:41.Monza and Sebastian Vettel experienced his second alternator

:31:41. > :31:46.failure of the season, the current World Champion is not letting the

:31:47. > :31:54.thought of failure play on his mind. I can't control it. I wish I could.

:31:55. > :31:59.I can't. I think in the end these things happen. If I win, it is not

:31:59. > :32:06.me winning, it is the team winning as well, so it is us. We didn't

:32:06. > :32:09.finish last race. We are trying to make it better this race. Lewis

:32:09. > :32:13.Hamilton is still smiling after winning last time out in Monza. Now

:32:13. > :32:19.he is ready for a very different challenge in the heat of Singapore.

:32:19. > :32:24.You have to be so focused. Mentally it is draining. I have never gone

:32:24. > :32:31.out after winning the race here. Just destroyed, mentally and

:32:31. > :32:35.physically. I want to enjoy rather than go crazy afterwards! Jenson

:32:35. > :32:40.Button, who is keen to revive his Championship chances, came out here

:32:40. > :32:44.earlier to acclimatise and do some heat training. I have been out

:32:44. > :32:50.cycling with the national team here, which is great fun. It was a

:32:50. > :33:00.surreal experience riding along and there's 80 monkeys dotted along the

:33:00. > :33:03.

:33:03. > :33:08.road and an A pache flies over. 2008 saw the deliberate accident by

:33:08. > :33:18.Nelson Piquet Junior. Now, on Italian television, he has a new

:33:18. > :33:26.

:33:26. > :33:32.How many times have you uttered the words "you're fired"? Not as many

:33:32. > :33:36.times as him! Romain Grosjean is alongside us now. Before we get on

:33:36. > :33:44.to talking about racing here. What was it like having to sit out the

:33:44. > :33:54.Grand Prix in Monza? The most exciting weekend of the year for

:33:54. > :34:02.sure. It was not easy. We have seen a few things. The team have been

:34:02. > :34:05.working. It is good for me. learned a bit about the car. The

:34:05. > :34:09.FIA did because they wanted you to learn a bit about yourself. What

:34:09. > :34:14.did you learn from having to sit out that race with regards to your

:34:14. > :34:20.performances this year? Was it a harsh punishment? It was hard. We

:34:20. > :34:24.accepted it. That is the end of our answer. You know, you always learn

:34:24. > :34:29.when you have a hill that comes in front of you, when you go to the

:34:29. > :34:33.top, you are stronger on the other side. We are coming to a circuit

:34:33. > :34:38.where a high downforce and the walls are threatening. Can you

:34:38. > :34:43.perform well here? It's not an easy track. We have been struggling a

:34:43. > :34:47.bit on Friday. Hopefully, it will be better. We are trying to find

:34:47. > :34:55.solutions, which is not always easy. Let's hope it's going to be good.

:34:55. > :35:03.We hear very much - and I have experienced how hard this track is

:35:03. > :35:12.physically. What is different about this circuit compared to Monte

:35:12. > :35:16.Carlo? The humidity and the heat is very hard here. We need to be

:35:16. > :35:21.careful with the kerbs. It is very hot in the car. That will be very

:35:21. > :35:26.hard for the whole race. It is a tough race here for the drivers, as

:35:26. > :35:30.David knows. Welcome back to Formula One. You are in good

:35:30. > :35:34.company. When they all returned, they all scored points in the first

:35:34. > :35:40.race back? Hopefully. Before we let you go, 2013, plans for next

:35:40. > :35:45.season? What is the latest? 2013 is still a while ahead. First, we

:35:45. > :35:48.focus on what we have to do here. knew that would be the answer! Good

:35:48. > :35:51.luck in qualifying. The reason why I asked that question is because

:35:51. > :35:55.this is the time of year when people really start to talk about

:35:55. > :36:05.next season, which feels like the perfect time to gaze into the

:36:05. > :36:08.

:36:08. > :36:11.Singapore is one of the great financial centres of the world and

:36:11. > :36:15.should come as no surprise therefore that this is the centre

:36:15. > :36:18.of the driver market. The permutations and combinations of

:36:18. > :36:23.driver line-ups next season is enormous. Only Red Bull, the top

:36:24. > :36:26.team, have announced theirs. That offers opportunities to teams and

:36:27. > :36:32.drivers alike to maximise their drivers alike to maximise their

:36:32. > :36:37.positions. Does Michael Schumacher hold all the cars? Until he decides

:36:37. > :36:47.what he is going to do next season, he certainly does. If he were to

:36:47. > :36:48.

:36:48. > :36:52.retire, the ramifications would 20 Days after I reported that Lewis

:36:52. > :36:58.Hamilton was in discussions with Mercedes, still nobody has denied

:36:58. > :37:01.the story. I now believe he has two firm financial offers from Mercedes

:37:02. > :37:06.and McLaren on the table. A move to Mercedes would suit him and his

:37:06. > :37:10.management team. It offers the perfect opportunity to turn him

:37:10. > :37:18.into a global name. Where does that leave McLaren? Who will fill

:37:18. > :37:23.Lewis's seat? Nico Hulkenberg has been linked with a move from Force

:37:23. > :37:29.India. Perhaps Sergio Perez, Sauber's hot shot, is the man most

:37:29. > :37:38.likely to replace Hamilton. I heard Martin Whitmarsh describe the drive

:37:38. > :37:41.of Perez in Monza as "sensational". He comes with the support of a

:37:41. > :37:46.billionaire Mexican. There are not many teams brave enough to turn

:37:46. > :37:50.that down. What has to be remembered about Ferrari is that

:37:50. > :37:57.Fernando Alonso is absolute number one. This is how they have raced

:37:57. > :38:03.for decades. The number two driver plays a supporting role. Has Massa

:38:03. > :38:07.done enough to save his seat? Two results in Monza and Spa. Was that

:38:07. > :38:11.enough to make his team bosses happy? Alonso has stated that Massa

:38:11. > :38:16.is still the man. Remember, the slower your team-mate, the faster

:38:16. > :38:20.you look. If Massa were to leave, Sergio Perez is very high on

:38:21. > :38:30.Ferrari's list. Another name, a bit of a surprise, been out of Formula

:38:31. > :38:32.

:38:32. > :38:42.One for over a year, Adrian Suttel could be ready for a comeback. Have

:38:42. > :38:43.

:38:43. > :38:48.Williams got something up their sleeve? He's been faster than

:38:48. > :38:58.Maldonado in the majority of free practice sessions this year. I

:38:58. > :39:00.

:39:00. > :39:05.believe Senna will make way. If that wasn't enough, it is now ch

:39:05. > :39:10.time for teams and drivers. My sources tell me we will be a lot

:39:10. > :39:16.wiser after Wednesday. The message is clear - nothing else

:39:16. > :39:21.comes close to a drive in Formula One. Eddie, it all becomes clear on

:39:21. > :39:22.Wednesday. You don't commit to which Wednesday? I'm not going to

:39:22. > :39:26.which Wednesday? I'm not going to say which Wednesday either. There

:39:26. > :39:34.are very strong meetings and meetings were held last week with

:39:34. > :39:38.the advisory board and the board of Mercedes. It is a crucial time for

:39:38. > :39:42.them. We know the agreement has been signed. I don't want to steal

:39:42. > :39:47.their thunder. What needs to happen is what happens to their driver

:39:47. > :39:51.line-up. What you are saying is, you think on Wednesday Michael

:39:51. > :39:55.Schumacher's future will be decided and that will filter through

:39:55. > :39:59.Formula One? We have been told that we would know by early October. I

:39:59. > :40:03.think it might be brought forward. Too many people need to slot into

:40:03. > :40:07.positions. Right, Wednesday. Make sure you are near a computer

:40:07. > :40:11.screen! From a man who has had a great career in Formula One -

:40:11. > :40:20.Michael Schumacher, not Eddie Jordan - to two guys desperate to

:40:20. > :40:26.get into Formula One. Strong seasons for the both of you. Max,

:40:26. > :40:30.your year has resulted in you wearing the Marussia top. You get

:40:30. > :40:37.to drive the car on Friday. What did the team notice in you that

:40:37. > :40:41.brought that deal? I think we started at the start of the year as

:40:41. > :40:46.being in the Marussia team. My qualifying speed has been quick. F1

:40:46. > :40:51.teams like the know the driver is quick. Then we have had some really

:40:51. > :40:56.good race results with two wins and two poles. A combination of that

:40:56. > :41:01.combines to the result of wearing the shirt. It is only your second

:41:01. > :41:08.in GP2. You have had a strong year. Are you itching to get into Formula

:41:08. > :41:13.One as soon as possible? I think everyone in GP2 is itching to get

:41:13. > :41:17.into Formula One. There's a lot of people that have tested the car and

:41:17. > :41:21.there's a lot of reserve drivers in GP2. I want to have my chance. This

:41:21. > :41:26.year, I have had a good year. Probably not enough to get into

:41:26. > :41:30.Formula One. Maybe for me another year in GP2. Guys, I know both of

:41:30. > :41:34.your fathers quite well. How important is it to have some

:41:34. > :41:39.financial backing behind you in a moment like this, where you need

:41:39. > :41:43.that extra push? It is a big help. I don't think many people come into

:41:43. > :41:49.F1 now without backing. You have to have the talent and the backing now.

:41:49. > :41:55.It is a complete must now, I think. So it's nice to have something

:41:55. > :41:59.there. You need big backers to get you any further. It is one of the

:41:59. > :42:07.questions - have you got money to come and race in F1, that is the

:42:07. > :42:15.way the sport is going? Yes. You need talent and the guys in GP2,

:42:15. > :42:20.everyone is very good. The guys at the top are all good. At the moment,

:42:20. > :42:24.you need financial backing. That is the way it's been for a few years.

:42:25. > :42:31.Obviously, it depends and some people get certain deals and I

:42:31. > :42:35.guess it depends on the team and negotiations. I think it's a shame

:42:35. > :42:40.it's gone that way. Ultimately, you see some drivers that could be in

:42:40. > :42:44.F1 and are not. At the same time, that's how it's got to be. Yeah. It

:42:45. > :42:48.will be lovely if the sport was about your talent and not about

:42:48. > :42:52.your financial muscle. We have discussed drivers moving around.

:42:52. > :42:57.These are two faces who we hope will be moving into a Formula One

:42:57. > :43:00.race seat very soon. Good luck for the race tomorrow. Actually, the

:43:00. > :43:03.reason why they feel if they get into Formula One they are entering

:43:03. > :43:06.a sport that isn't going to take their life is because of the amount

:43:06. > :43:10.of incredible work that's been done in the last 30 years to make

:43:10. > :43:19.Formula One a much safer sport. Plenty of that credit goes to a man

:43:19. > :43:27.who was known down here as "Prof". In the entire history of motosport,

:43:27. > :43:32.no-one has been liked, respected and valued more than Sid Watkins.

:43:32. > :43:36.Professor Sid Watkins OBE was not only one of the world's leading

:43:36. > :43:41.nuerologists but a passionate motor racing enthusiast whose knowledge,

:43:41. > :43:45.influence, leadership and determination turned a viciously

:43:45. > :43:52.hazardous sport which claimed many lives a year into one of

:43:52. > :43:56.comparative safety. When Jackie Stewart crusaded for greater safety,

:43:56. > :44:01.the general attitude was, if you can't take the heat, keep out of

:44:01. > :44:04.the kitchen. He was vilified for his valiant efforts. The tide

:44:04. > :44:09.turned when Bernie Ecclestone asked his friend, Sid Watkins, to do

:44:09. > :44:13.something about it. Working tirelessly, Sid transformed the

:44:13. > :44:18.medical scene. Proper facilities at the circuits. Helicopters to

:44:18. > :44:23.transport the casualties. Sid himself, sitting in a medical car

:44:23. > :44:29.in the pit-lane at every Grand Prix, better crash barriers, better

:44:29. > :44:34.helmets, safer cars and circuit designs and so much more. The death

:44:34. > :44:44.rate plunged and so many drivers owe him their lives. Asked Martin

:44:44. > :44:51.

:44:51. > :44:55.We were so lucky as a sport to get hold of someone like that. I have

:44:55. > :45:00.so many good memories, professionally and off the bridge

:45:00. > :45:05.at -- off the professional side. Enter 1003 I had an accident in

:45:05. > :45:11.Monaco and the first person I saw was said and then use a his big

:45:11. > :45:18.smile, you felt more at ease. liked to drop some whisky so he was

:45:18. > :45:23.a good bloke. Sydney was everyone's friend in Formula One. A warm-

:45:23. > :45:27.hearted and kindly man who loved his cigars, whisky and fishing, he

:45:27. > :45:33.had a highly developed sense of humour. Why do you persist in

:45:33. > :45:38.wearing that Ms Siobhain cap, I once asked. To wind up Bernie

:45:38. > :45:42.Ecclestone, who wants everything to be perfect, was the reply. Did you

:45:42. > :45:47.have a favourite? Her I'll always remained absolutely neutral, except

:45:47. > :45:51.when I punch you in the belly after you had your appendix out. Sydney

:45:51. > :45:56.warmed every word he was and he made his world a better place. I am

:45:56. > :45:59.sad of such a wonderful man no longer being with us. I am so sad

:46:00. > :46:04.for his charming wife and his family. And for all of us who were

:46:04. > :46:08.so lucky and privileged to have known him. What are heart-warming

:46:08. > :46:18.consolation is that he left the sport he loved him so much better

:46:18. > :46:19.

:46:19. > :46:23.shape than he found it. Professor Sid Watkins, who the sport will

:46:23. > :46:28.forever be indebted to. Jackie, you have also done much for safety.

:46:28. > :46:35.Give us some idea of what the sport was like in 1965 when you first

:46:35. > :46:38.climbed into the cockpit? I wish we had said Watkins back in 1965

:46:38. > :46:43.because the struggle to get safety was enormous because the

:46:43. > :46:48.establishment were against it and I had a steering wheel but as Anna

:46:48. > :46:52.Tait to it because in those days they were not retractable. The

:46:52. > :46:56.scars - aka the cars, the fuel tank and the fires were horrendous and

:46:56. > :47:02.the number of deaths was horrendous. If you race for five years in my

:47:02. > :47:06.time, there was it two out of three chance you're going to die. When I

:47:06. > :47:12.retired from the sport, and continued for a little bit on

:47:12. > :47:15.safety but said Watkins picked up. Do you think the drivers don't

:47:15. > :47:24.fully respect that and they take too many risks because safety is so

:47:24. > :47:27.good? There is no doubt that there is an element of comfortable living

:47:27. > :47:31.and they have never seen this sort of accidents and they have never

:47:31. > :47:36.been to those memorial services or to those funerals and they have

:47:36. > :47:41.never seen her mother, father and the sister and the girlfriend and

:47:41. > :47:47.the children. If that was to happen, and I hope it never does, but 18

:47:47. > :47:50.years, five months and something like 17 days since we lost the life

:47:50. > :47:54.of a Formula One driver is an incredible testament to the

:47:55. > :47:57.management. But I believe there are liberties being taken on the track

:47:58. > :48:02.today that should not be taken and I think the penalties that the

:48:02. > :48:06.governing body should hand out for those errors and the manner in

:48:06. > :48:11.which some of these manoeuvres take less there's a reason to be

:48:11. > :48:18.concerned and therefore I think if they were to readjust themselves to

:48:18. > :48:23.the potential of what can happen, it would not be a bad thing. Sidney

:48:23. > :48:27.Watkins, it is normal at this time of loss that everybody will find

:48:28. > :48:34.the good, but I think you could put into words what kind of a man he

:48:34. > :48:40.was. Putting aside is where Conservative. Said Watkins, we must

:48:40. > :48:46.send sincere condolences to Susan and the family and I saw him the

:48:46. > :48:51.day before he died. I went to see him in hospital. And I went to the

:48:51. > :48:56.funeral, just managing to get over here. The feeling in that church

:48:56. > :49:00.was amazing but I think when we stand for one minute's silence

:49:00. > :49:04.tomorrow, we are going to have a very strong feeling about him.

:49:04. > :49:08.There is nobody in this paddock that was not helped in one way or

:49:08. > :49:12.another, whether it was a driver or something to do with safety or with

:49:12. > :49:17.the illness of the mechanics and their families and children, said

:49:17. > :49:24.Watkins was always there. Much loved by this community of Formula

:49:24. > :49:27.One, particularly. But that was watered down to other farmers and

:49:27. > :49:34.the medical facilities we have on the track today, he is responsible

:49:34. > :49:40.for that. And what he has done for the sport can never be forgotten.

:49:40. > :49:45.And the love that he has given out to so many people, and he had a

:49:45. > :49:49.huge sense of humour. He loved his wind and his whisky and he loved a

:49:49. > :49:53.very good laugh. Thank you so much for sharing his memories and we

:49:53. > :49:58.extend our thanks to you for all the hard work you have put pen to

:49:58. > :50:01.make this a much Supersport. We send our condolences to the family

:50:01. > :50:05.of Sidney Watkins and the greatest legacy is to make sure that the

:50:05. > :50:10.quest for safety never stops. Enjoy the qualifying session and when we

:50:10. > :50:13.talk about safety in Formula One, it is a modern drivers and the

:50:13. > :50:17.tracks that many are kept so saved by the work that has been done in

:50:17. > :50:26.the past so when they take to the track shortly, they know they can't

:50:26. > :50:35.attack this all the way. Let's meet Paul di Resta. Can this be you're

:50:35. > :50:43.Singapore? I would like to think so. We will try to pick up with the

:50:43. > :50:46.qualifying in Monza. They treated us well last year. There is quite

:50:46. > :50:50.this long run to the first corner and this tight section. Walker us

:50:50. > :50:55.through this and tell us about what she will be looking for.

:50:55. > :50:59.biggest thing is how I late you are on the brakes. The run to the next

:50:59. > :51:06.corner isn't where you will be the hero. Quite tricky in the first lap.

:51:06. > :51:13.You don't want to be stuck on the inside in turn number one. There is

:51:13. > :51:17.REM and if that does not happen, turn number three is one of the

:51:17. > :51:22.slowest on the track. Very demanding on the tyres and I think

:51:22. > :51:31.the degradation will be the main focus. Before this leads you into

:51:31. > :51:36.the city. The exit on to her number three. You disappear into the city.

:51:36. > :51:42.This is one of the widest points on the track. The challenges of the

:51:42. > :51:45.straight circuit, concrete walls, how do you feel the conference on?

:51:45. > :51:49.The it is confidence, building that slowly through the weekend so when

:51:49. > :51:54.it comes to the point when you want to maximise that, it is there. But

:51:54. > :52:00.it is tricky. There are some barbs. It will put some shocks through the

:52:00. > :52:07.car. And this week track is very dirty. You have normal road cars

:52:07. > :52:11.throughout the year. What amazes me about straight tracks is you have

:52:11. > :52:17.the barrier over there and a racing line into this corner, literally,

:52:17. > :52:23.the apex is against the concrete wall. It attacks the senses. When

:52:23. > :52:26.you first get into the grand prix car, you can see that sensation, it

:52:26. > :52:31.only comes through time and experience because everything is

:52:31. > :52:37.coming quicker. You are never sure how close you are but the

:52:37. > :52:42.boundaries keep moving up, the more track time you get. Another unusual

:52:42. > :52:47.aspect of this race is the drivers will tell his right over there. We

:52:47. > :52:53.are just below were we'll we'll all be staying. And the circuit goes

:52:53. > :52:59.under the grandstand. You are passing under the fans. You don't

:52:59. > :53:03.want to run off going underneath the rub. You can feel the

:53:03. > :53:07.vibrations and the noise of the car disappearing underneath. But there

:53:07. > :53:12.are still quite a bit of the laps still to go. A normally and will

:53:13. > :53:15.wrap up by wishing you luck. Presumably, you are hoping to

:53:15. > :53:19.improve on the 6th place finish last year. But I think what would

:53:19. > :53:25.be nice it is if you look down the barrel of the camera and say

:53:25. > :53:29.whatever you would say to all of your fans... It is more important

:53:29. > :53:34.to the fans of Formula One, come and enjoy the experience and

:53:34. > :53:38.Singapore. It is a great event, we are on the European times and, in

:53:38. > :53:42.the dark. They has led to get you for qualifying but you could still

:53:42. > :53:48.make it for the race tomorrow and now the man who runs the Italian

:53:48. > :53:52.team. Arguably, the quickest car in Monza. Three days of testing, are

:53:52. > :53:58.you happy? I have to say that from what we have seen yesterday and

:53:58. > :54:02.this morning, or this evening, I don't know the time...! I think

:54:02. > :54:09.that I can see Red Bull and McLaren in very good shape, we are there,

:54:09. > :54:13.but who knows? I think that as we always say, when the race is over,

:54:13. > :54:21.that will be the story. How soon will we know the driver line-up for

:54:21. > :54:27.next year? Eddie, you know far better than anyone else! As we

:54:27. > :54:32.always say, there is no rushing into that decision. He will decide

:54:32. > :54:38.those things and then we will not follow the speculation... We will

:54:38. > :54:41.pay attention. We will follow the decision and not the speculation.

:54:41. > :54:51.We shall see how things pan out because qualifying is so important.

:54:51. > :55:04.

:55:04. > :55:07.The last three races have been won looking stunning in the Singapore

:55:07. > :55:12.night sky but for the drivers, this is one of the toughest tracks in

:55:12. > :55:17.the calendar. Qualifying for round 14 of the championship takes place

:55:17. > :55:21.for the 5th time under the floodlights. The first of three

:55:21. > :55:25.Asian events to be held over three weeks with Japan and Korea coming

:55:25. > :55:30.up soon. Each one as crucial to the likes of Lewis Hamilton and

:55:30. > :55:34.Sebastian Vettel as they try to close the gaps. No less than 23

:55:34. > :55:38.corners to be a negotiated between the concrete walls and 10

:55:38. > :55:43.kilometres of fencing that form the circuit, which runs along some very

:55:43. > :55:49.famous roads. Raffles Boulevard, it passes City Hall and the old

:55:49. > :55:52.Supreme Court between No. 9 and 10. Flashing past the esplanade Theatre

:55:52. > :55:58.and concluding just beneath the giant observation wheel, the

:55:58. > :56:04.Singapore Flyer. Stunning environment. And it is tough on the

:56:04. > :56:09.drivers. And qualifying on a straight track means taking extra

:56:09. > :56:13.chances? You have to go for that ultimate fast lap? It is as simple

:56:13. > :56:16.as this, there is no room for mistakes. On other tracks you can

:56:16. > :56:21.afford to say, I shall have this little journey of discovery and if

:56:21. > :56:26.it goes wrong, I might lose that lap. But an know for the next time.

:56:26. > :56:29.Here, you do not have that luxury. If it goes wrong, you will hit the

:56:29. > :56:34.walls. We saw that this morning with some cars hitting the barriers

:56:34. > :56:39.and damaging themselves I'm going out of the session. That is one way

:56:39. > :56:44.to stay cool in this fantastic evening. It really is the biggest

:56:44. > :56:51.challenge of the season. Anti- clockwise, that puts extra strain

:56:51. > :56:58.on the drivers and throw-in that unity and 23 corners, 12 of them

:56:58. > :57:02.below the 100 kilometres speed and there is lots to do. The infinity

:57:02. > :57:08.sound cool on the top of that hotel. What an amazing place to watch the

:57:08. > :57:11.qualifying. -- swimming pool. As you mentioned, we have seen some

:57:12. > :57:17.people hitting the wall, Mark Webber this morning and Sergio

:57:17. > :57:21.Perez, they have repaired his rear suspension. Also, Vitaly Petrov had

:57:21. > :57:25.problems and that car has been repaired and Timo Glock had a

:57:25. > :57:29.sensing issue. That seems to have been sold. Drivers have been kept

:57:29. > :57:33.cool in the garage before the session gets underway. Gary

:57:33. > :57:38.Anderson, it is sweaty in the pit lane, as you prepare for the start

:57:38. > :57:43.of the session. Asked Amiss other cars, there were in the low

:57:43. > :57:49.downforce and doing 200 mph. It is different you? For sure but I have

:57:49. > :57:53.lots in any mechanics with the watering cans. Yes, high downforce.

:57:53. > :57:59.There were group on the rear of the car, the better the traction. 23

:57:59. > :58:03.quarters and 15 or 16 of those are traction events. Very difficult on

:58:03. > :58:07.the rear tyres. Some tracks have problems with wearing on the front

:58:07. > :58:13.tyres but here it is all about keeping those rear tyres working

:58:13. > :58:23.well and alive. Going into Q1 in a moment. What are we looking for to

:58:23. > :58:23.

:58:23. > :58:27.get those top 17? I would not be comfortable unless I had done 51.6.

:58:27. > :58:34.We have got one driver, Jean-Eric Vergne, who always seems to be

:58:34. > :58:40.hanging out the bottom. That would Tim -- that time would mean most of

:58:40. > :58:44.the guys, they would not need to go on to those super soft tyres. This

:58:44. > :58:48.session will be hectic. A it will be with all those cars out there,

:58:48. > :58:52.24 cars battling for some space around the track, looking at Nico

:58:52. > :58:56.Rosberg. That is interesting, it looks like he has done some laps

:58:56. > :59:01.already, his face is red. His father was always red-faced when he

:59:01. > :59:05.was in the racing car. Perhaps it is genetic. Some drivers sweat more

:59:05. > :59:09.than others. Michael Schumacher used to annoy people by looking

:59:09. > :59:13.like he had not even done the Grand Prix. But even this morning, he had

:59:13. > :59:21.some sweat on his face. Mark Webber, and barring where he shot take the

:59:21. > :59:25.journey after he retires! amateur astronomer. Christian

:59:25. > :59:29.Horner, he is talking to him. He did hit the wall but he got the car

:59:29. > :59:31.back out during that session so that was impressive. We were

:59:32. > :59:37.talking with Gary before the qualifying, just that relative

:59:37. > :59:41.strength of the rear suspension, of the Catcher In. And then taking

:59:41. > :59:51.Vitaly Petrov back in bus-top and Mark Webber got out of his car and

:59:51. > :59:54.

:59:54. > :59:57.then find out of course that he Nobody is rushing out on to the

:59:57. > :00:02.track just yet. Fernando Alonso was third fastest this morning. I

:00:02. > :00:07.wonder if he will be able to match the McLarens and the Red Bulls.

:00:07. > :00:12.Alonso, the Championship leader, and two-times a winner here. He

:00:12. > :00:18.does have a good record around this street track. The driver can make a

:00:18. > :00:22.difference. Last year, on the grid, we saw two by two formations. Red

:00:22. > :00:27.Bull were on the front row together. The McLarens were on the second row.

:00:27. > :00:34.The two Ferraris were on the third row. A driver can make a difference

:00:34. > :00:42.here, David? Street circuits, they say the driver...

:00:42. > :00:46.TEAM RADIO: By the time you start your first flying lap, you have

:00:46. > :00:56.probably lost five degrees on the front tyres, the rears two. After

:00:56. > :01:06.that message, I think I would be ready to jump out of the car. That

:01:06. > :01:10.

:01:10. > :01:14.was a -- an engineer who sounded very depressed.

:01:14. > :01:19.Sitting in the cockpit, you can't see anything other than the tops of

:01:19. > :01:24.your front tyres, so you are judging where the side of your rear

:01:24. > :01:32.wheel is. That is what makes it more tricky. It is easier to drive

:01:32. > :01:38.a street circuit in a touring car. Romain Grosjean is on track. We

:01:38. > :01:41.heard from him. He is, of course, back after his ban at Monza. There

:01:41. > :01:46.is Sergio Perez. One of the stars of Monza, that brilliant second

:01:47. > :01:53.place that he earnt for the Sauber team, being up there on the podium,

:01:53. > :01:56.three podiums he's had so far this year. It has been a stunning second

:01:56. > :02:00.year of Formula One for Sergio Perez. They haven't looked as quick

:02:00. > :02:04.here this weekend. Perez was only 18th fastest this morning and

:02:05. > :02:09.Kobayashi was 14th quickest. He's gone out early in this session

:02:09. > :02:16.because he did touch the wall and do some damage to the car. He is

:02:16. > :02:19.out there on the prime tyres. You will see the red-marked super-softs

:02:19. > :02:23.will show them later on in the session. They are a quicker tyre.

:02:23. > :02:29.This is about catching up for lost time this morning. I suspect this

:02:30. > :02:35.will be a run to get his eye in. The fastest part of the track,

:02:35. > :02:40.where the DRS will be in operation in the race. They can use the DRS

:02:40. > :02:45.throughout the track in qualifying. He comes down out of that section

:02:45. > :02:52.into Turns 8 and 9. Then that takes him, as he comes through here, past

:02:52. > :02:58.the City Hall and the Old supreme Court, the Padang area - a lot of

:02:58. > :03:06.music concerts going on there. Into Turn 10 - in fact he doesn't

:03:06. > :03:10.stkpwhrt he goes around the outside and they will have noticed that --

:03:10. > :03:13.in fact he goes around the outside and they will have noticed that.

:03:13. > :03:19.have seen a number of drivers doing that this weekend. One of the main

:03:19. > :03:22.reasons is they have removed the exit kerb on the last part of the

:03:22. > :03:27.chicane which put Kimi Raikkonen into the wall there a couple of

:03:27. > :03:33.years ago. Taking away that kerb on the exit has allowed the drivers

:03:33. > :03:39.that option. If they get it wrong, they can run round the outside. He

:03:39. > :03:43.was able to get away with it there. Yes, that's right. He may well lose

:03:43. > :03:47.the time that he gets as a result of that. Of course, once you have

:03:47. > :03:52.done one quick lap, the tyres are not as good for the next one. Lewis

:03:52. > :03:55.Hamilton is out and he is not wearing his yellow crash helmet.

:03:56. > :04:00.He's got a special Singapore- coloured crash helmet for this

:04:00. > :04:09.weekend. It features some of the colours of the Singapore flag.

:04:09. > :04:12.Sergio Perez has gone faster on that 1:52.70. Jenson Button comes

:04:12. > :04:16.out now. Interestingly, in front of Perez, Schumacher was the car

:04:16. > :04:23.weaving around as he crossed the start-finish line. He is on his

:04:23. > :04:30.second lap. That would suggest that he has had a mistake on his out-lap.

:04:30. > :04:40.That's Perez missing the turn into the chicane. Maybe we will get a

:04:40. > :04:41.

:04:41. > :04:45.replay. This is Raikkonen doing... Oh! That is down at Turn 7. One of

:04:45. > :04:49.the prime places for overtaking. That is where the DRS zone will be

:04:49. > :04:56.available in the race only. In this section of qualifying, they can use

:04:56. > :05:02.DRS everywhere. There you see it popping wide-open on the rear end

:05:02. > :05:06.of Fernando Alonso. Alonso is up on that on the split times, up by

:05:06. > :05:09.three tenths of a second. We are yet to see the real stars of the

:05:09. > :05:13.practice sessions which have been Vettel and Hamilton in particular,

:05:13. > :05:16.Button has been looking good, Massa gets out of the way of his team-

:05:16. > :05:20.mate. No problem there at all for Fernando Alonso. Going through the

:05:20. > :05:25.area that we saw two cars hit the barrier this morning. That was

:05:25. > :05:32.Perez and Webber. Or earlier this afternoon, I should say. Rosberg

:05:32. > :05:35.has done three laps without setting a time. The Mercedes team - they

:05:35. > :05:40.have either both been unlucky with traffic or they are running a

:05:40. > :05:43.strategy of bedding in the tyres before going for it. I have no idea

:05:43. > :05:48.why that might be. Maybe our man in the pit-lane might be able to shed

:05:48. > :05:52.some light on that. Gary, let's come to you. We are seeing a lot of

:05:52. > :05:57.initial running on the soft tyre. Some of these team also have to go

:05:57. > :06:01.for the super-soft? Yes, there's 1.5 seconds difference between the

:06:01. > :06:08.soft and the super-soft. That is a huge amount of time. There is no

:06:08. > :06:11.way you can find that on the yellow tyres. I have no idea why they are

:06:11. > :06:16.doing this. Maybe they got unlucky with traffic, or maybe they want to

:06:16. > :06:20.get the balance into the tyres. Rosberg has an interesting moment.

:06:20. > :06:25.He bounced over the kerb as you were speaking so that lap is over

:06:26. > :06:30.for him. Let's - is this Rosberg? No, this is Jean-Eric Vergne. A big

:06:31. > :06:35.lock-up from him? Yeah, unusually the outside, that was down into

:06:35. > :06:39.Turn 7, the outside right, you would expect it normally to be the

:06:40. > :06:44.unloaded tyre. This is Rosberg bailing out of Turn 10. Going to

:06:44. > :06:48.the inside of that exit kerb to avoid any damage. We saw Michael

:06:48. > :06:52.Schumacher in free practice. Lewis Hamilton locking up into Turn 1 and

:06:52. > :06:56.bailing out of the corner. Anyone who has tuned in right now, you

:06:56. > :06:59.will be able to see what Ben was saying. A different helmet for

:06:59. > :07:05.Lewis this afternoon. More difficult to recognise him in the

:07:05. > :07:09.car. He's dropped the famous yellow colours that were a mark of respect

:07:10. > :07:13.to his hero, Ayrton Senna. Gary, we are watching a lot of front

:07:13. > :07:17.locking-up here. What are your thoughts on that? It is difficult

:07:17. > :07:22.to get the temperature into the front tyres. It is more to get the

:07:22. > :07:25.grip of the front tyres up to the right level so you can use the four

:07:25. > :07:32.of them altogether. Michael Schumacher has gone fastest in the

:07:32. > :07:35.first section. After two laps, the tyres do settle down. Let's see how

:07:36. > :07:40.the rest of the lap goes. That was the back end sliding. Michael

:07:40. > :07:44.Schumacher was fastest in qualifying in Monaco. He's

:07:44. > :07:50.attacking here. They haven't shown any great pace so far this weekend.

:07:50. > :07:55.Are they going to surprise us? Let's see what the lap time is.

:07:55. > :08:02.1:49.994. So he goes fourth quickest. A huge lock-up from

:08:02. > :08:07.someone. It is Daniel Ricciardo. Resta going fifth fastest. He has

:08:07. > :08:12.been going pretty well this weekend. Force India got both cars on the

:08:12. > :08:20.fifth row here last year. Paul went on to get his best result, which he

:08:20. > :08:26.has matched this year. Looking back at Pastor Maldonado, he is third

:08:26. > :08:32.quickest. He's on a better lap - a good middle sector from Maldonado.

:08:32. > :08:36.Fastest of anybody in the middle sector so far. He goes fastest -

:08:36. > :08:40.1:49.40. We go on board with his team-mate, Bruno Senna. Great

:08:40. > :08:48.images here. You get so close to the wall approaching the last

:08:48. > :08:52.corner. You see a spike of oversteer. Opens his DRS. At this

:08:52. > :08:59.stage of the qualifying session, that puts him four-tenths behind

:08:59. > :09:07.his team-mate. Rosberg has gone fastest, a 1:49.4. A lock-up from

:09:07. > :09:10.Lewis. Again, over the kerbs, Turn 10, the Singapore Sling! It should

:09:10. > :09:17.be called Mickey Mouse, that is what it is! It's causing the

:09:17. > :09:20.drivers all sorts of problems. Lewis Hamilton bailing out to the

:09:20. > :09:25.inside having set the fastest first sector of anyone so far in this

:09:26. > :09:31.session. You can see again, it was the outside tyre that locked up.

:09:31. > :09:36.The McLaren chose - it always seems to be very sensitive on the front

:09:36. > :09:46.axle. Michael Schumacher sparking his end plate coming through the

:09:46. > :09:46.

:09:46. > :09:51.have to say that the track is obviously a lot cooler than it was

:09:51. > :09:55.when they started free practice three. That means that the balance

:09:55. > :09:58.that the drivers found in that session will have changed going

:09:58. > :10:02.into qualifying. That explains why we are seeing multiple laps being

:10:02. > :10:05.run on these tyres. They will get their eye in, found out where they

:10:06. > :10:10.are and the next run will be with lower fuel and they will be hoping

:10:10. > :10:13.to be able to deliver the maximum from those tyres on the first or

:10:13. > :10:18.second lap. Felipe Massa attacking now in the Ferrari. Remember, you

:10:18. > :10:21.have to get in the top 17 to qualify through to the next stage.

:10:21. > :10:25.Not everybody has done a representative lap - that includes

:10:25. > :10:30.Hamilton. He had to bail out as we saw a moment ago. Felipe Massa has

:10:30. > :10:36.done a lap. He's currently eighth fastest. A lovely view down there

:10:36. > :10:40.as the 1,500 lights show up the track surface through this Marina

:10:40. > :10:46.Bay section of Singapore. Absolutely glorious view looking

:10:46. > :10:53.down over the Ferrari of Felipe Massa. Up towards, up through the

:10:53. > :10:57.right-hander at Turn 14, past the Esplanade Theatres on the right-

:10:57. > :11:04.hand side. They turn on to Raffles Avenue several times. He ran a bit

:11:04. > :11:09.wide there, out across the front of the Bay. Passes under the

:11:09. > :11:14.Grandstand, which is why we lose the image slightly. He's a couple

:11:14. > :11:19.of tenths quicker than his previous best lap, which has him sitting in

:11:19. > :11:24.eighth place. The car gets out of the way. Let's see him finish the

:11:24. > :11:29.lap. It will be an improvement. Takes him up to fifth place. A good

:11:29. > :11:33.lap. Hamilton is on a flyer. Lewis Hamilton has gone fastest in the

:11:33. > :11:36.first and second sectors. The time showing up as purple on our screens

:11:36. > :11:46.which means he is faster than anybody else at this point. There

:11:46. > :11:51.

:11:51. > :11:54.he is. TEAM RADIO: The front is locking.

:11:54. > :11:59.The higher front tyre pressures will help. Here comes Hamilton. He

:11:59. > :12:03.goes fastest. Still using the soft tyre. Not the super-soft. It is a

:12:03. > :12:08.1:48.2. A second faster than Alonso. That is a megalap from Lewis

:12:08. > :12:13.Hamilton. Jenson Button also using that same soft tyre. They will hope

:12:13. > :12:19.not to have to use the super-soft. They want to save them for later on.

:12:19. > :12:24.He is seven-tenths quicker. Third gear, fourth gear, he runs up to

:12:24. > :12:28.the last turn. He's managed to pull it to seven-tenths quicker than his

:12:28. > :12:33.previous best. This will be some way short of Hamilton. More than a

:12:33. > :12:36.second away. At this stage, second place. Yeah, it is good enough to

:12:36. > :12:40.go second. One second away from what Lewis Hamilton has done.

:12:40. > :12:45.Hamilton really has put in a fast lap here. Take a look at the replay.

:12:45. > :12:48.He was talking about lock-up? is what he said on his radio to his

:12:48. > :12:53.team. They have responded. They think it will be tyre pressures.

:12:53. > :12:56.They believe that too low on that front pressure and the car is

:12:56. > :13:06.bottoming. Webber has split the McLarens. That is one Red Bull up

:13:06. > :13:12.there. What's Vettel going to do? He goes second now! Look at that,

:13:12. > :13:18.two-thousandths of a second slower than what Hamilton did. Who is not

:13:18. > :13:27.safe? In the drop zone at the moment, we have Jean-Eric Vergne,

:13:27. > :13:37.Kobayashi, Kovalainen, Glock and Pic and then the two HRTs of Narain

:13:37. > :13:40.

:13:40. > :13:45.Karthikeyan and Pedro de la Rosa. It has to be noted, his team-mate,

:13:45. > :13:55.de la Rosa, he has also done a run on the super-soft and he is a

:13:55. > :13:55.

:13:55. > :14:03.what is your opinion on what we are seeing? Looking at it now, the

:14:03. > :14:13.track's got a lot quicker. Lewis Hamilton's time, 1:48.2 on the soft

:14:13. > :14:15.

:14:15. > :14:19.tyre. He found over a second on the better grip from the tyres. It is

:14:20. > :14:26.difficult to get the fronts working. That is why Lewis is locking up the

:14:26. > :14:30.fronts. You might have too much understeer on the super-softs! The

:14:30. > :14:33.two Lotuss have gone out on the super-softs. So Kimi Raikkonen has

:14:33. > :14:43.gone out on the softer tyre. You would have thought that Lotus would

:14:43. > :14:45.

:14:45. > :14:49.have felt safe. Obviously they have another go. The track

:14:50. > :14:53.conditions have changed, it is worth having a go. Exactly what

:14:53. > :14:59.Gary was saying, the track conditions have changed and the lap

:14:59. > :15:03.times are getting quicker. We do say this large track evolution

:15:03. > :15:07.through these sessions, everything just gets more responsive as the

:15:07. > :15:12.temperatures drop over the morning practice session, or the afternoon

:15:12. > :15:17.and early evening session. But this is very significant that Lotus have

:15:17. > :15:21.felt the need to go on Super soft early, that tells us there clearly

:15:21. > :15:25.not feeling comfortable on the prime tyres. They don't want to

:15:25. > :15:30.take any risks. They will want to track how that lap from Kimi

:15:30. > :15:35.Raikkonen is going. That was a green first sector on that faster

:15:35. > :15:39.tyre. That would not scared to match the very fastest of times. He

:15:39. > :15:47.has a couple of tenths away from what Lewis Hamilton has already set.

:15:47. > :15:52.Better see about sector two. Here comes Kimi Raikkonen, he needs to

:15:52. > :15:57.get through into a queue to, that is a priority. Some of those boys

:15:57. > :16:02.will be trying to get themselves enter those top 17. Kimi Raikkonen

:16:02. > :16:06.did say he has gone fastest in the middle sector. He said they were

:16:06. > :16:11.struggling. Surprising, when we have seen the pace of the score on

:16:11. > :16:16.other straight trucks, like in Valencia, they had a very fast car.

:16:16. > :16:21.We will see exactly tomorrow how fast the car is. Their strength has

:16:21. > :16:26.always been their pace, being able to make their tyres last longer.

:16:26. > :16:32.That puts Kimi Raikkonen fastest at this point. No big surprise, given

:16:32. > :16:36.that he is on those super soft tyres, we expected that to be about

:16:36. > :16:40.one second of a difference. Grosjean, he has gone fast as the

:16:40. > :16:46.ball on the middle sector. Both Lotus cars looking safe. Sebastian

:16:46. > :16:52.Vettel going out on the harbour of the two compounds. Very close to

:16:52. > :16:57.the wall, as you can see. 48.2 already and he is improving on that.

:16:57. > :17:02.Let us just say... That is a fraction quicker. That is all they

:17:02. > :17:09.are going to get out of that. Hopefully, that will be enough.

:17:09. > :17:16.Paul to rest are now going fastest. 1:48.0. Grosjean using those softer

:17:16. > :17:24.tyres. Even quicker. 1:47.6. We are now actually seeing the Times

:17:24. > :17:32.getting down to not quite the level in Q1 last year, we saw 1:46.3. But

:17:32. > :17:35.much faster times. Again, the outside will, very unusual, we

:17:35. > :17:42.would normally expect that to be the inside on the those loaded

:17:42. > :17:47.tyres. That gets onto the white lines. The front left wheel locks.

:17:47. > :17:54.You can see that he lost some lap time. As a consequence, you just

:17:54. > :17:58.have to hold the brakes longer. Kobayashi, he had been in the drop

:17:58. > :18:07.zone and he has dragged himself out. At the moment in the drop zone,

:18:07. > :18:10.Petrov, Jean-Eric Vergne, Timo Glock, so Jean-Eric Vergne, you

:18:10. > :18:17.would have expected him to get out of that. And this is his first time

:18:17. > :18:23.here in Singapore. Mark Webber, currently 6th fastest, riding the

:18:23. > :18:27.car around a little bit. Green, green in those first two sectors.

:18:27. > :18:36.He will show some improvement. Four-tenths down to the fastest of

:18:36. > :18:40.all, Grosjean. Let us see how much he loses. Qualified second to

:18:40. > :18:49.Sebastian Vettel last year. 6th place at the moment, that should be

:18:49. > :18:54.enough. On board of Bruno Senna. Currently in 15th place. He will

:18:54. > :19:04.want more than that. Currently, ahead of Kobayashi and Danny

:19:04. > :19:18.

:19:18. > :19:22.Arakawa. He should be safe. -- recorder. -- Ricardo. Kovaleinen

:19:22. > :19:28.has told us several times that he thinks he is the fastest qualifier

:19:28. > :19:35.in Formula One. Hopefully the team will develop the car. He has got a

:19:35. > :19:39.pretty good record, here. The best results when he was driving for the

:19:39. > :19:45.top teams. He qualified in 5th place back in 2008, driving for

:19:45. > :19:52.McLaren. We are watching Jean-Eric Vergne, trying to drag himself out

:19:52. > :19:59.of the props and. The chequered flag is out. Jean-Eric Vergne has

:19:59. > :20:07.got there. Can he get back on the line? What a very good lap. He has

:20:07. > :20:13.gone up under 7th place, pushing Kobayashi it out of the top 10. Who

:20:13. > :20:20.can still beat him? Kobayashi is back in. He will not be any threat.

:20:20. > :20:25.He has backed off. Bruno Senna is in that top 17. Disappointment for

:20:25. > :20:30.Kobayashi. He will be hoping, as he watches the rest of this session,

:20:30. > :20:36.and we can see Bruno Senna and Mark Webber getting out of the way. He

:20:36. > :20:41.runs wide and hit the barrier with the right rear tyre. Let's go on

:20:41. > :20:44.board. As he goes through turn No. 9. Onto the back straight.

:20:44. > :20:50.Oversteer and it does not look like much from inside the cockpit but as

:20:51. > :20:55.we saw from the external camera, that was reasonable. It was. Ever

:20:55. > :20:58.so easy to just get carried away on the straight circuit. Just

:20:59. > :21:04.finishing off the session and see how it works for the men towards

:21:04. > :21:09.the back. Kobayashi is out. He is in the drop-zone. Vitaly Petrov,

:21:09. > :21:17.just finishing off his lap. Going for the honour of the fastest

:21:17. > :21:24.Caterham. Petrov comes across the line. Heikki Kovaleinen? Who will

:21:24. > :21:34.get the honours? Petrov. Ahead of Kovaleinen. And Timo Glock, not

:21:34. > :21:35.

:21:35. > :21:41.quite able to beat the kitchen ands. -- Caterhams. This morning, his

:21:41. > :21:48.comments? I cannot repeat them. He was wearing so much on the radio.

:21:48. > :21:56.The big surprise is that we have lost the Sauber of Kobayashi.

:21:56. > :21:59.Sergio Perez has made it through. Kobayashi, what a qualifying

:21:59. > :22:06.performance Super Ten in Belgium just a while ago, putting it on to

:22:06. > :22:16.the front row. And he ended up in that big crash. Kobayashi, he joins

:22:16. > :22:19.

:22:19. > :22:22.Petrov, Kovaleinen, Timo Glock, Charles Pic. All on the sidelines.

:22:22. > :22:26.Bruno Senna makes it through. Having a look at the car to make

:22:26. > :22:33.sure he is OK. That has been the story. As soon as you take

:22:33. > :22:36.liberties around this track, it will bite back. We have captured

:22:36. > :22:40.parole Bruno Senna hitting the walls. He probably feels punch

:22:40. > :22:43.drunk at this stage. He was trying to figure out, how am I going to

:22:43. > :22:49.get through the race if I had hit the wall that many times in

:22:49. > :22:54.qualifying? Grosjean, having taken that band, sitting back in the

:22:54. > :22:59.cockpit. And he goes fastest in that session. That will feel really

:22:59. > :23:03.good. A it is just a fairy tail, he would never have expected that. The

:23:03. > :23:12.length and breadth of this paddock would not have expected that. It

:23:12. > :23:19.shows you, hopefully he has learned from his mistakes. TEAM RADIO:...

:23:19. > :23:26.Thank you. Jean-Eric Vergne just feeding back to the team. Paul di

:23:26. > :23:32.Resta putting in that great session and Kobayashi, second on the grid.

:23:32. > :23:36.How things can change on different circuits. And here it is so

:23:36. > :23:39.dependent on the tyres. Those boys in the front, going super soft.

:23:39. > :23:44.That was surprising because you can see the Times that there was

:23:44. > :23:48.Hamilton was doing all normal tyres. That is the way, as this Shashin

:23:48. > :23:52.goes through, towards the end of the day, who will be on pole

:23:52. > :23:56.position? It or not be Paul di Resta Grosjean. One of the top

:23:56. > :24:00.three drivers, who we know are fighting hard. Briefly, we spoke

:24:00. > :24:04.earlier about drivers looking to make their move into the big teams,

:24:04. > :24:10.and lots of people talking about Sergio Perez. Not many people

:24:10. > :24:14.talking about Kobayashi. Is he under threat? As things are

:24:14. > :24:19.unfolding, he just does not seem to be... Of the sparkle that we saw in

:24:20. > :24:24.years gone by, I'm such a big fan, but there is something lacking, it

:24:24. > :24:28.is a lacklustre, I don't know. It might be that he has been outshone

:24:28. > :24:33.by his team-mate. He does not seem to get those results that he

:24:33. > :24:36.desperately deserves. Let's make our way around you. Here we have an

:24:36. > :24:40.example of the kind of tyres they are using this weekend. And it is

:24:40. > :24:44.worth pointing out to people who saw that Lewis Hamilton was not the

:24:45. > :24:49.fastest man, he set his fastest lap on soft tyres and lots of men are

:24:49. > :24:53.going out on super soft. He is sitting back in the garage and

:24:53. > :24:59.saying, I have got something up nicely. I have got really good

:24:59. > :25:04.tyres. Had he seems in the best position. Let's go to the

:25:04. > :25:09.commentary box to get the thoughts of David Coulthard and bed Edwards.

:25:09. > :25:15.As we check out these lovely tyres. -- Ben Edwards. David Coulthard,

:25:15. > :25:19.who qualified in the Singapore night race, it's not difficult in

:25:19. > :25:23.terms of humidity and heat because it is so short but it is still such

:25:23. > :25:26.a difficult circuit to get used to. It is but the intensity of the

:25:26. > :25:29.qualifying lap is when it hits you and the fact that the only do three

:25:29. > :25:33.laps and then go back to the pits, it is when the heat radiates from

:25:33. > :25:37.the cockpit into the driver. Although they do not have the big

:25:37. > :25:47.fluid loss that you will see in the race, there will be lots of sweaty

:25:47. > :25:50.men. This is intense stuff. As I said. You get that lovely air-

:25:51. > :25:55.conditioned, true box but this is your first experience of Singapore.

:25:55. > :25:58.The it is just fabulous, to see the lights of the city as the backdrop,

:25:58. > :26:08.it is beautiful. I love the way the colours just bounce off the cars.

:26:08. > :26:09.

:26:09. > :26:13.They look stunning under the It is one of the service that has

:26:13. > :26:16.caught everybody's imagination and we are so relieved and happy that

:26:16. > :26:22.they have extended this for five more years because everybody will

:26:22. > :26:24.be overjoyed, not least the sponsors and the drivers. You can

:26:24. > :26:28.see the drivers sitting in the garage. They have dry ice blowing

:26:28. > :26:32.into the cockpit to keep them as cool as possible. That is what you

:26:32. > :26:37.can see being held. You cannot see what was on the end of that, but it

:26:37. > :26:41.is covering the driver. Tony Fernandez, one of the cool

:26:41. > :26:51.customers in Formula One. His car is still struggling to get out of

:26:51. > :26:54.

:26:54. > :26:58.to get underway in Singapore. Kimi Raikkonen, interestingly, first out

:26:58. > :27:03.onto the circuit. The Lotus cars had to use the super soft tyres to

:27:03. > :27:08.make it through into the top 17. Kimi Raikkonen has come out early.

:27:08. > :27:14.His team-mate was very fast, the time that Grosjean did on those so

:27:14. > :27:17.the soft tyres was 0.3 of a second faster than Sebastian Vettel.

:27:17. > :27:22.Grosjean was half a second faster than Kimi Raikkonen. Gary, you said

:27:22. > :27:26.the track was getting faster and faster. Now the targets are moving

:27:26. > :27:33.into cute too. The it is very difficult. The track evolution must

:27:33. > :27:40.be at least one second. To get through into Q1, you must be

:27:40. > :27:44.looking at 48.5. It is one of those things, the guys in the front four,

:27:44. > :27:50.they will set their times with super soft. That is a good

:27:50. > :27:54.indication but I would not be happy if I did not do 48.5. There was

:27:54. > :28:00.committed under DUP been to use its tyres so he has those on reserve. -

:28:01. > :28:04.- Lewis Hamilton did not mean to use those tyres. All the way down

:28:04. > :28:11.to six players, Paul di Resta, then Sebastian Vettel and Fernando

:28:11. > :28:20.Alonso. TEAM RADIO: The real pressure is down. Thank you very

:28:20. > :28:24.much for that. Coming back to the speed trap information. That is on

:28:24. > :28:30.the start-finish in to turn number one. They will be doing faster

:28:30. > :28:40.speeds into the braking zone. Just one of those peculiarities of where

:28:40. > :28:44.they decide to stick the speed trap. The traffic of Singapore, it

:28:44. > :28:49.continues, despite thousands of fans being here. The East Coast

:28:49. > :28:55.Parkway, which goes over the top of the circuit, the Singapore Flyer,

:28:55. > :28:58.that provides some wonderful viewing points. And that last

:28:58. > :29:04.corner, coming past the pit lane, as we can now see Kimi Raikkonen

:29:04. > :29:09.going on to the fast lap. Let's focus on that. We know that whoever

:29:09. > :29:13.has gone out on super soft but he is also under investigation along

:29:13. > :29:17.with Timo Glock, there was some impeding or along the line. The

:29:17. > :29:24.stewards are looking into that. Let's watch Kimi Raikkonen and see

:29:24. > :29:29.what the Slapper looks like. He has gone out. Just seeing how much more

:29:29. > :29:33.life there is left in these tyres. Baby also to get some feeling for

:29:33. > :29:39.the balance, there will be more confidence and how hard she can

:29:39. > :29:44.push. This evil thing racetrack, very dusty off-line. Some areas

:29:44. > :29:49.where you can exit that turns and it's all about how brave and close

:29:49. > :29:52.you can get to the wall. Other areas, there is a lot of space. In

:29:52. > :29:57.Monte Carlo you know that everywhere you will be touching

:29:57. > :30:02.barriers and the apex. This place confuses drivers. You have a very

:30:02. > :30:12.tight, so corner and that corner is the slowest turn on the track. 13.

:30:12. > :30:16.

:30:16. > :30:19.And look at the Boulevard, it is the track. Out of Turn 14 comes

:30:19. > :30:25.Kimi Raikkonen. Then a kink left at Turn 15. A tight right through 16

:30:25. > :30:29.and 17. You were telling me earlier, David, that these left and rights,

:30:29. > :30:32.they have a peculiarity to them, you have to compromise one to get

:30:32. > :30:42.the second one right? It is the difference between the apexes and

:30:42. > :30:50.the chicanes that makes it so difficult. A short chicane, you can

:30:50. > :30:58.just focus on the braking, bang over the kerbs and hit the throttle

:30:58. > :31:02.over the exits. Let's go onboard with Grosjean. This is down... He's

:31:02. > :31:07.spun and hit the wall! Oh. There must be damage to the left rear.

:31:07. > :31:13.He's managed to keep it going. That was down into Turn 14. As far as I

:31:13. > :31:19.could see, just carried a bit too much speed on the turn-in phase.

:31:19. > :31:22.Got wide. A lot of dust on the wheel. Having looked like man most

:31:22. > :31:25.likely to lead the Lotus team after the first part of qualifying, I

:31:25. > :31:28.would be surprised if there is not damage to the rear of the car.

:31:28. > :31:34.That's right. Romain Grosjean - look at Fernando Alonso on the

:31:34. > :31:40.attack. This is a fast lap from Alonso. He goes quickest - 1:48.058.

:31:40. > :31:45.Faster than Raikkonen. Perez is third. A big lock-up behind Alonso.

:31:45. > :31:49.That was Hulkenberg. But should have got away with it. Mark Webber

:31:49. > :31:53.is on the super-softs. He didn't use them in the first session. This

:31:53. > :31:57.must be a new set of the super- softs. Indeed. If you can make out

:31:57. > :32:01.on the right-hand side of his dashboard, he is running three-

:32:01. > :32:08.quarters of a second faster than his time from the first session,

:32:08. > :32:12.which was a 1:48.7. That is what Alonso has done at this stage of

:32:12. > :32:19.the session. Let's see how the rest of the lap evolves. A bit of

:32:19. > :32:24.oversteer on entry to Turn 20. Loses a bit of time on exit. How

:32:24. > :32:28.brave can he be on the throttle and DRS? Across the line. Lost some

:32:28. > :32:32.time there. Second fastest. Sebastian Vettel has gone fastest

:32:32. > :32:37.in first and second sectors here. There is Sebastian Vettel coming

:32:37. > :32:42.through to the latter part of the lap now. Let's see. This is going

:32:42. > :32:47.to be a big chunk faster. Hamilton is also on a good lap with a very

:32:47. > :32:50.fast middle sector as well. As he comes out of the last corner,

:32:50. > :32:54.surely quickest. Power drifting the car to the line. Although he is

:32:54. > :32:58.fastest at this point, sorry, Ben, to have talked over you there, I

:32:59. > :33:02.think he might have lost a bit of time on the run-out... Damage.

:33:03. > :33:07.can see there Senna... He's bent something. Look at the car crabbing

:33:07. > :33:11.down the pit-lane. Gary, you had a quick look at the Lotus earlier of

:33:11. > :33:17.Grosjean. Now it looks like we might have damage on the Williams?

:33:17. > :33:22.Yes. We are doing to see a replay now. -- we are going to see a

:33:22. > :33:27.replay now. He smacks the right rear wheel. Yeah. That caused some

:33:27. > :33:31.damage. That is the end of the show for him. Grosjean, when he came him,

:33:31. > :33:39.I looked at the left rear wheel. The wheel wasn't moving around. He

:33:39. > :33:49.might be lucky. Hamilton's gone fastest, a 1:46.665. We are on for

:33:49. > :33:53.a tremendous tussle. Button is not quite there. He's done a 1:47.6. We

:33:53. > :33:56.saw a good lap from Rosberg earlier on. Let's see what this can be for

:33:56. > :34:02.Schumacher. Across the line, he is 11th. He is in the drop zone. Only

:34:02. > :34:12.the top ten get through. Currently, that is Michael Schumacher,

:34:12. > :34:13.

:34:14. > :34:20.Hulkenberg, Perez, Ricciardo, Vergne and Senna. Alonso gets

:34:20. > :34:23.wheeled back into the pits, currently on a 1:48.0. A big gap

:34:23. > :34:30.between himself and the times that Hamilton and Vettel are doing,

:34:30. > :34:35.David? Yeah, early stages. He does have the opportunity to run again

:34:35. > :34:38.and try and close that gap. Bruno Senna punches the car. That ends

:34:38. > :34:43.what has been a pretty scrappy Singapore Grand Prix, it has to be

:34:43. > :34:48.said. He seemed pretty chilled when we spoke to him in the preview show.

:34:48. > :34:51.Disappointment. Is that the sign of the pressure showing as the second

:34:51. > :34:57.half of this season, a critical part for him, when the team are

:34:57. > :35:00.starting to look at what they are going to do for the driver line-up

:35:00. > :35:04.next year? So much is about confidence. His confidence never

:35:04. > :35:09.got on to a roll this weekend, with that incident in free practice on

:35:09. > :35:15.Friday. Looking into the Red Bull garage. Red Bull seem to be on top

:35:15. > :35:20.form. They don't have pole position sewn up by any means. They won't do

:35:20. > :35:23.that until we get into Q3. All they are trying to do is get in the top

:35:23. > :35:28.ten. Sebastian Vettel seems to be back at his best. He always goes

:35:28. > :35:38.well in Singapore. Hamilton loves this circuit. It could be the dual

:35:38. > :35:41.

:35:41. > :35:51.between the pair. -- duel between the pair. Gary, can you see these

:35:51. > :35:58.times getting any faster? Are we at the limit now? I think 1:46.6 is a

:35:58. > :36:05.pretty impressive time. I am sheer they are safe at that point. Di

:36:05. > :36:10.Resta has done a 1:48.8. There is time to come from him which puts

:36:10. > :36:15.Massa on the back row. Those - Rosberg backwards, they need to

:36:15. > :36:21.have another run for me. They are under a bit of pressure. Raikkonen

:36:21. > :36:25.could probably get away with it and relax a little bit. It's just - if

:36:26. > :36:33.you hook it up here with 23 corners, you can gain so much time. If we

:36:33. > :36:37.take Rosberg backwards, that means Maldonado, he could be in danger,

:36:37. > :36:40.Felipe Massa, di Resta, Schumacher, Hulkenberg, Perez, Ricciardo,

:36:40. > :36:45.Vergne and Grosjean. Senna can't play any more. So there is a lot

:36:45. > :36:50.still to be decided here. Yes, just looking at the times they achieved

:36:50. > :36:53.last year, I know it is not relevant at all to what is going on

:36:53. > :36:59.this afternoon. They are a lot slower. This time last year, the

:36:59. > :37:04.fastest time in this session was 1:44.9. They don't have the full-

:37:04. > :37:07.blown diffusers, but the same kind of tyres of course. Some

:37:07. > :37:12.improvements made around the track. They have moved some kerbs. So

:37:12. > :37:17.quite a drop-off in performance year on year. 1.8 seconds on all

:37:17. > :37:20.the sessions it seems to have been off the pace of last year. Gary, it

:37:20. > :37:24.is interesting that loss of performance, isn't it? It is. All

:37:25. > :37:34.the sessions have been about 1.8. It is because of this exhaust blown

:37:34. > :37:38.diffuser. This is a typical track where it is the best asset. That's

:37:38. > :37:42.what this circuit requires. So I would say the majority of that 1.8

:37:42. > :37:47.is down to the change in regulations as far as what you can

:37:47. > :37:50.do with exhaust outlets. It is the same for everybody. Romain Grosjean,

:37:50. > :37:55.despite that contact with the wall earlier, the car seems to be fine,

:37:55. > :37:59.he was fastest, remember, in the first part of qualifying. So we can

:37:59. > :38:03.still expect something from the young Frenchman. He has been to

:38:03. > :38:09.this Singapore circuit in the past when he drove for Renault. Had a

:38:09. > :38:13.short race, in fact! Also had a crash in practice at the same

:38:13. > :38:17.corner that Piquet had crashed at the previous year. Grosjean back

:38:17. > :38:21.and on form this weekend. Let's see what he can do on this next lap.

:38:21. > :38:26.The track beginning to get busier. What concerns me, David, as the

:38:26. > :38:29.clock ticks down, you only need one car hitting the wall and you can't

:38:29. > :38:34.come back out to play and that sets the times as they are now. Well,

:38:34. > :38:38.that is exactly why these teams get out there early. We have seen on

:38:38. > :38:42.other tracks, they wait till the very last moment - Sebastian Vettel

:38:42. > :38:46.tends to cross the line with only a few seconds to spare to normally do

:38:46. > :38:51.that one flying lap in qualifying. If you look at the history of this

:38:51. > :38:57.racetrack, and going into tomorrow's race, we have a 100%

:38:57. > :39:01.chance of a safety car based tonne previous four events here. We have

:39:01. > :39:05.seen other sessions being stopped because of incidents in qualifying.

:39:05. > :39:11.Let's hope this isn't one of them. We will find out who is worthy of

:39:11. > :39:19.being in the top ten. Yes, the GP2 race earlier today, which was won

:39:19. > :39:25.by Max Chilton, they had plenty of safety car episodes in that one.

:39:25. > :39:30.Grosjean just building up here. We see he is still on his outlap at

:39:30. > :39:33.the moment. He goes on to his flying lap. I believe he is on a

:39:33. > :39:38.flying lap. He is only seven-tenths off the fastest time. Yes, sorry.

:39:38. > :39:43.It would be a good outlap! This is an effort from Romain Grosjean. He

:39:43. > :39:50.will get another couple of laps if he can make the tyres last. Let's

:39:50. > :39:55.see where this puts him. Third. That is a great lap from Grosjean.

:39:55. > :40:02.1:47.5. He's about a second, just under a second off the fastest,

:40:02. > :40:08.that is Lewis Hamilton. Lewis sits in the cockpit of his car. He is

:40:08. > :40:11.studying some figures there. Yeah, that's the fan blowing into the

:40:11. > :40:16.cockpit. It is being passed through some dry ice which we showed

:40:16. > :40:20.earlier in the show. That brings the temperature of the air down.

:40:20. > :40:24.Paul di Resta has opened this lap quite nicely. A couple of greens,

:40:24. > :40:27.so he is up on his personal best. He is looking like he is about

:40:27. > :40:32.seven-tenths down on our fastest man at this stage. We will see how

:40:32. > :40:36.he ends this last sector. Quite tricky through this last section of

:40:36. > :40:41.corners. He goes underneath the Grandstand at Turn 18, 19. This is

:40:41. > :40:44.where Bruno Senna touched the wall in free practice. Goes through 20,

:40:44. > :40:50.21. This is where Bruno Senna touched the wall in qualifying.

:40:50. > :40:56.Then this fastest corner on the lap, 22, 23, just one turn, uses all of

:40:56. > :41:00.the width of the track. He gets fifth. That should be enough.

:41:00. > :41:06.1:47.6. A similar lap time to what we saw Grosjean do. What about Nico

:41:06. > :41:09.Hulkenberg? Both cars were in the top ten here last year. They are

:41:09. > :41:12.evenly matched these two. Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta, very

:41:12. > :41:17.good drivers, the two of them. Being mentioned by plenty of people

:41:17. > :41:23.with regard to good seats for next year. Let's keep an eye on him.

:41:23. > :41:33.was a second up. He's dropped a couple of tenths as he came into

:41:33. > :41:34.

:41:34. > :41:37.the last part of the lap. So the two Force Indias looking

:41:37. > :41:46.comfortable in the top ten. Mark Webber is eighth. Would like to

:41:46. > :41:50.make that more secure. He's done a 1:48.2. His team-mate is in the

:41:50. > :41:59.1:46s, so let's see whether he can get a little closer to Vettel's

:42:00. > :42:06.time. It is a 1:47.5. So he goes into third place. In the drop zone

:42:06. > :42:11.at the moment - Maldonado, Massa, Vergne - he has completed a lap.

:42:11. > :42:15.Rosberg crosses the line, he is seventh. Maldonado is still out

:42:15. > :42:19.there, Massa is still out there, Schumacher - Perez goes 11th. That

:42:19. > :42:24.is not enough. Massa is 11th. It is not enough for his Ferrari to go

:42:24. > :42:30.through. We are still waiting formal mall. He could be a threat.

:42:30. > :42:34.We see Raikkonen go through. And Raikkonen - Maldonado has gone

:42:34. > :42:38.fifth! Raikkonen goes 11th. Alonso has just improved. He needed that

:42:38. > :42:43.to make sure. He's gone fifth. As we see Ricciardo coming through -

:42:43. > :42:47.no way he could get in the top ten. He is 14th. Raikkonen has been

:42:47. > :42:53.pushed out. Michael Schumacher is the only other one now who could

:42:53. > :42:58.push Nico Hulkenberg out of the top ten. Hulkenberg - is he still on a

:42:58. > :43:05.lap? He is eight-tenths quicker showing on his dashboard. That

:43:05. > :43:09.won't be enough to get him into the top ten. Oh... He goes ninth.

:43:09. > :43:15.in the top ten. Hulkenberg's not seen the chequered flag. He is not

:43:15. > :43:23.on a good lap. Hulkenberg is out. So one Force India is in, that of

:43:23. > :43:27.di Resta, followed by the two Mercedes, Schumacher faster than

:43:27. > :43:32.Rosberg. Raikkonen, who is third in the World Championship at the

:43:32. > :43:36.moment, Kimi Raikkonen is out of the top ten. Massa is out as well.

:43:36. > :43:40.So another failure for Felipe Massa to get into that top ten. Let's

:43:40. > :43:46.confirm those that are not making it through to the final part of

:43:46. > :43:50.qualifying. They are Nico Hulkenberg, Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe

:43:50. > :43:54.Massa, Sergio Perez... TEAM RADIO: Good job, Michael, that

:43:54. > :44:04.is P9. He is through. The other three that

:44:04. > :44:05.

:44:05. > :44:10.are not are Daniel Ricciardo, Jean- Eric Vergne and Bruno Senna.

:44:10. > :44:13.JAKE HUMPHREY: Frustration for Kimi Raikkonen. They have impressed at

:44:13. > :44:20.high-downforce circuits. Kimi Raikkonen couldn't get it hooked

:44:20. > :44:23.EDDIE JORDAN: He couldn't get it hooked up. Romain Grosjean is on

:44:23. > :44:28.fire and he is showing where the team could be. Raikkonen, it is a

:44:28. > :44:32.pity. This is another man unter pressure. He may have the -- under

:44:32. > :44:36.pressure. He may have the indignity of his team-mate winning the title

:44:36. > :44:46.while he doesn't get a podium all season-long? He placed particularly

:44:46. > :44:51.

:44:51. > :44:56.well in Monza, also in Spa. We need all the usual regulations. Before

:44:56. > :45:00.we talk about the early drop out, Kobayashi, gets mentioned the last

:45:00. > :45:06.session and the boys in front. Could we see the 4th pole position

:45:06. > :45:11.for McLaren? They look for very strong and if anything, the car

:45:11. > :45:16.looks very well set up for the rest. It is very Steph and they are on a

:45:16. > :45:23.high. Nevertheless, I think this is the Red Bulls circuit and Red Bull

:45:23. > :45:28.were just about get it in the end. You said that Lewis Hamilton was on

:45:28. > :45:38.a high, Kobayashi is on a very bad blow. For the first time this year,

:45:38. > :45:39.

:45:39. > :45:44.he has not made it through to the What was a problem? Through the

:45:44. > :45:53.wake I struggled with the car. Myself, I cannot get comfortable

:45:53. > :45:58.with this car. We did everything to make it right. I don't know, I

:45:58. > :46:02.don't feel confident with the car. It was very difficult driving.

:46:03. > :46:12.a great track if you are not confident. Where do you feel

:46:13. > :46:18.

:46:18. > :46:26.nervous? Huge oversteer. I cannot Difficult session. And the same

:46:26. > :46:31.applies to Bruno Senna. Sadly, he has managed to hit the wall, all

:46:31. > :46:36.the way through from free practice, here... To both parts of qualifying.

:46:36. > :46:41.It is a very difficult weekend. point to the fact that he is

:46:41. > :46:45.driving like a man under pressure. And he is certainly feeling it. If

:46:45. > :46:52.you are under pressure, there is very little forgiveness. He got

:46:52. > :46:59.away with it this time because yesterday, his car was toppled. His

:46:59. > :47:05.car is missing some suspension and it is to arrange. You believed that

:47:05. > :47:12.he was the man that would make Williams next season. Is that based

:47:13. > :47:20.on results? He is such a nice person and a good guy. But he has a

:47:20. > :47:25.young understudy inside the tame who is already beating Maldonado.

:47:25. > :47:32.He is young, he has been coached by Kimi Raikkonen. And Mika Hakkinen,

:47:32. > :47:36.in particular. But all of the finish people are pushing for him.

:47:36. > :47:41.One of the difficult things is when struggling on track, you have to

:47:41. > :47:51.face the media. They call it the pen. And Bruno Senna is facing the

:47:51. > :47:51.

:47:51. > :47:57.media. You have had some taps with the wall. How badly damaged is a

:47:57. > :48:01.car? Not much damage but enough to stop it from running and

:48:01. > :48:06.unfortunately that put me in a bad position tomorrow. Frustration,

:48:06. > :48:12.just like Monaco, I started from the back and I'll have a good car

:48:12. > :48:18.for the race. And will have to push very hard tomorrow to get points

:48:18. > :48:23.out of this. Good luck. He has managed to pick up points in four

:48:23. > :48:29.out of the last six races. Just four points behind Pastor Maldonado.

:48:29. > :48:35.And he has picked up one when the season. He has some consistency.

:48:35. > :48:38.That is a beautiful aerial shot and just behind the riding, you can see

:48:38. > :48:43.the commentary positions on the final quarter. I imagine it is

:48:43. > :48:53.pretty loud in there. And Lewis Hamilton gearing up for the final

:48:53. > :48:59.

:48:59. > :49:02.part of qualifying. Let's get the Sebastian Vettel and Hamilton. As I

:49:03. > :49:07.mentioned, Sebastian Vettel dropped some time on the last corner and

:49:07. > :49:13.Hamilton kept it together and he had the honour of being fastest in

:49:13. > :49:17.Q2. But there is that huge gap behind to the rest. On less they

:49:17. > :49:23.were just cruising, I think it is looking back they will be playing

:49:23. > :49:29.the chase for third place. Come on, divot. Give us the man for pole

:49:29. > :49:37.position. Sebastian Vettel or Lewis Hamilton? I will wait until I see

:49:37. > :49:47.the red light coming out. He is a master! Then, can you shed some

:49:47. > :49:47.

:49:47. > :49:52.light? The boys are desperate to get this underwear? -- underway.

:49:52. > :49:57.The final part getting underway. Nico Rosberg heading out onto the

:49:57. > :50:01.track. Jenson Button is barely out. Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton and

:50:01. > :50:06.some of them using the softer tyres rather than super-soft. Most of

:50:07. > :50:10.those men going out on a super-soft tyres. Paul arrester, he qualified

:50:10. > :50:15.well last year and he has another good opportunity to get into the

:50:15. > :50:22.top 10. Fernando Alonso not on the circuit yet, and neither is

:50:22. > :50:26.Grosjean. Or Maldonado. Those who chose not to go out on the option

:50:26. > :50:32.tyre, it is both Mercedes cars. Perhaps we can get some words from

:50:32. > :50:40.Gary. Grosjean, sitting in his car and focusing. Just one run in

:50:40. > :50:44.qualifying. Presumably, not many of them have tyres left. It is one of

:50:44. > :50:51.those situations. The tyres are to run in the last session, you must

:50:51. > :50:57.start the race with them. So, both Mercedes cars were 9th and 10th

:50:57. > :51:00.place in that session so they might be looking at going down to

:51:00. > :51:05.tomorrow's race knowing that the soft tyre is more durable for the

:51:05. > :51:10.early part of the race and with that heavy fuel load, you might try

:51:10. > :51:20.our best on them by. Do the lap, then have someone crashes, we move

:51:20. > :51:23.

:51:23. > :51:27.off the grid. TEAM RADIO: There are two McLarens ahead of you. That

:51:27. > :51:32.gives them the option tomorrow and the opportunity to start with a

:51:32. > :51:35.different strategy with softer tyres rather than super-soft.

:51:35. > :51:40.Perhaps that is what Mercedes are playing at. On board with Nico

:51:40. > :51:47.Rosberg. He does love the circuit, he had some good performances with

:51:47. > :51:51.Williams. He qualified in third place in 2009 and second place in

:51:51. > :51:56.2008. Michael Schumacher has never scored points on this track and

:51:56. > :52:03.last year he went out and had a crash with Sergio Perez. They guys

:52:03. > :52:07.going on to the lap. And DRS is in operation on some of them. They

:52:07. > :52:12.might just be doing a lap to get the chance to stardom as tyres

:52:13. > :52:16.tomorrow. Not bothering to deploy DRS. That would suggest he has not

:52:16. > :52:23.tried to really set any lap time, here. Jenson Button and front, it

:52:23. > :52:33.is wide open. That big gap in the rear wing. He sheds about 15, or

:52:33. > :52:36.

:52:36. > :52:40.rants about 50 kilometres an hour. And the run-down in to turn No. 7.

:52:40. > :52:45.Rosberg and Schumacher, on the harder compound. Button on the

:52:45. > :52:50.super-soft, really going for it. To see if he can qualify on the front

:52:50. > :52:53.row, perhaps take pole position. Bouncing over the first kerb. And

:52:53. > :52:59.meanwhile, Hamilton has gone quicker than Jenson Button in that

:52:59. > :53:03.first sector. He got away with that, bouncing, but that would make an

:53:03. > :53:09.hesitate to go into full power exiting Number 10. As he goes along

:53:09. > :53:15.this long, wide section across the water, down in to turn number 14.

:53:15. > :53:19.Some understeer touching the inside kerb. Showing faster times. You can

:53:19. > :53:25.see to the right, three tenths quicker than he achieved in the

:53:25. > :53:29.previous section, which would give him a 47.3, and if he can maintain

:53:29. > :53:34.that, there would still be the gap between him and Hamilton. So,

:53:34. > :53:39.looking to find more than that. Hamilton has gone faster than

:53:39. > :53:47.anybody in the middle sector. Jenson Button going to the top of

:53:47. > :53:54.the times, presumably. Jenson Button fastest, 1:47.2. Hamilton

:53:54. > :54:02.quicker. We are with Lewis Hamilton, looking over his left shoulder. The

:54:02. > :54:09.final turns. Nice and tidy. And Hamilton goes fastest. 1:46.3. That

:54:09. > :54:15.was very rapid. Sebastian Vettel not as fast. 1:47.6. Busy saving

:54:15. > :54:18.something for the final run? Hamilton has often gone for it in

:54:18. > :54:24.the first run in Q3 and then sits back to see if anybody can beat

:54:24. > :54:29.that. Normally you put the big effort into the second run but on-

:54:29. > :54:34.street tracks, that works. TEAM RADIO: We will get the car pulled

:54:34. > :54:39.around for the second run. Hamilton ahead of Jenson Button then

:54:39. > :54:43.Sebastian Vettel. Webber is back in the pits and Mercedes did not

:54:43. > :54:50.complete a lap, so they have not actually done any time in this

:54:50. > :54:54.session. Some changing of the tyres going on. They're changing the

:54:54. > :55:04.tyres and I am sure they're putting on Superstock. At least this gets

:55:04. > :55:07.

:55:07. > :55:13.you out of the traffic. -- super- soft. TEAM RADIO: Two-tenths faster

:55:13. > :55:18.in secretary and four-tenths faster in a sector number three. We have

:55:18. > :55:22.never had the repeat pole position winner in Singapore, the previous

:55:22. > :55:27.four attempts, for different winners. Sebastian Vettel, Fernando

:55:27. > :55:32.Alonso, Hamilton in 2009 and at the moment he is looking good. The

:55:32. > :55:36.first year, Felipe Massa. Taking pole position for Ferrari. Hamilton

:55:36. > :55:40.looking to be the first repeat when her here. Jenson Button brings the

:55:40. > :55:44.car back into the pits and the clock is ticking away. They wanted

:55:44. > :55:51.it that a relatively fast in-lap. With four minutes left. That does

:55:51. > :55:58.not give them a lot of time. Romain Grosjean has come onto the circuit

:55:58. > :56:02.as well. Waiting to see what rebel get up to. Mark Webber in the pit

:56:02. > :56:11.lane. Just that one final run for him. Nobody else has but a time

:56:11. > :56:15.when the board except for Hamilton, Jenson Button and Vettel. This

:56:15. > :56:18.could be key for a Lewis Hamilton. Straight circuits can be

:56:18. > :56:24.unforgiving, going into this last run could bring out the yellow flag

:56:24. > :56:30.or the Red Flag. Concern on Christian Horner's face. This must

:56:30. > :56:38.be about the turnaround. Fernando Alonso says, this is my time, let

:56:38. > :56:42.me go. Unleash that prancing horse. The best. In theory will be the

:56:42. > :56:46.last part because that is when the most rubber has been laid down.

:56:46. > :56:52.Absolutely right, this is the last segment of qualifying. It isn't

:56:52. > :56:55.getting any hotter. The sun has set many others to go with shiny super-

:56:55. > :57:02.soft tyres. It is a wonderful feeling when you drop into the

:57:02. > :57:08.ground. That brand new set of tyres. That is when it really gets

:57:08. > :57:14.exciting for the drivers. They just have to go and ride the bucking

:57:14. > :57:18.Bronco and deliver the best lap they can. 10pm at night, local time.

:57:18. > :57:25.We are into the climax of qualifying. Hamilton has set the

:57:25. > :57:30.benchmark. He heads down the pit lane and has just limbering up.

:57:30. > :57:36.Getting ready. Just at the top of the cockpit, you could see his

:57:36. > :57:44.fingers, limbering up, like he was getting ready to perform. It would

:57:44. > :57:48.be great to have a shot of that. If that means he has both hands in the

:57:48. > :57:56.air, then he is steering with his knees. Goodness me, how did he keep

:57:56. > :58:00.that... Big sideways moment. Beautifully held. It cost him time

:58:00. > :58:06.and Red Bull gets well out of the way. Grosjean, being a little bit

:58:06. > :58:12.too aggressive on this lap. Look at that, making little mistakes. He

:58:12. > :58:17.has to go for it, of course. There is a lot left. And he gets more

:58:17. > :58:23.unforgiving the further he goes, down into 14. This is what we saw

:58:23. > :58:28.that slight wide earlier in the session. Well, he is back in fine

:58:28. > :58:37.form in many ways. After that band. But as you say, trying just a

:58:37. > :58:44.little bit too hard to impress. The best performance of the year so far.

:58:44. > :58:49.Second in Hungary. That is why we thought Lotus might do well. Almost

:58:49. > :58:53.hitting the wall. That was even more beautifully judged. Grosjean,

:58:53. > :58:59.4th place, a knot faster than Hamilton, Button or Sebastian

:58:59. > :59:02.Vettel. But considering how exciting that looked, maybe there

:59:02. > :59:09.was more in the tank if he had kept that under control. Let's look

:59:09. > :59:13.again. He touches the kerb. Going sideways. The bravery of youth kept

:59:13. > :59:17.his foot in and he got the di Resta Open. Didn't touch the wall.

:59:17. > :59:23.Mercedes will not run again in the session. Confirming that they have

:59:24. > :59:28.taken the option of starting on the auction house tomorrow. This super-

:59:28. > :59:31.soft tyre, so much quicker and qualifying, that will last only

:59:31. > :59:41.about him laps in the race tomorrow. That allows them at different

:59:41. > :59:46.

:59:46. > :59:50.On board with Maldonado, through 18, 19. Keep an eye on him. He can

:59:50. > :59:54.qualify well. He has done it several times this year. That pole

:59:54. > :59:58.in Barcelona. He was third in Valencia. It is a fast car on

:59:58. > :00:02.street tracks as well. Across the line - he is second! Maldonado goes

:00:02. > :00:10.second fastest to Hamilton at the moment. Another great qualifying

:00:10. > :00:16.lap by the Venezuelan. If only he can race like that as well! Alonso

:00:16. > :00:20.coming to the end of his lap. He is half a second down. Hamilton is a

:00:20. > :00:25.massive - he's had a massive loss of time. Not too bad in the middle.

:00:25. > :00:28.So maybe a mistake in the opening part of the lap. This is about

:00:28. > :00:33.whether he can get in front of Maldonado or not. This isn't going

:00:33. > :00:36.to be good enough to get in front of Hamilton. Alonso comes across

:00:36. > :00:40.the line - the World Championship leader goes third. It is a good

:00:40. > :00:50.effort. He is ahead of Button and Vettel. They are still likely to

:00:50. > :00:53.

:00:53. > :00:58.put in a lap. This is Mark Webber, the Australian. 1:47.4. He is fifth.

:00:58. > :01:04.Beaten by Maldonado and Alonso. Sebastian Vettel is the one who

:01:04. > :01:09.could still threaten Lewis Hamilton for pole position. Can he do it?

:01:09. > :01:13.He's only third. He's only third! Button is still on a lap. Although

:01:13. > :01:19.it's an improving lap, I don't think it will be enough to take

:01:19. > :01:24.pole position from his team-mate. Here comes Jenson Button. He stays

:01:25. > :01:34.fourth. Lewis Hamilton has taken his fifth pole position of the

:01:34. > :01:38.season. His next lap, it was not quite as quick. McLaren's sixth

:01:38. > :01:43.pole of the season. Well done to Lewis Hamilton. Beautifully judged

:01:43. > :01:46.qualifying once again. A bobble there. Just as we saw. But he

:01:46. > :01:54.controlled it. That's what I was saying about riding the bucking

:01:54. > :02:04.Briton Coe and he touches the wall on the -- bronco and he touches the

:02:04. > :02:04.

:02:04. > :02:08.wall on the exit. Look who he is going to be next to on the grid gsh

:02:08. > :02:11.his old mate Pastor Maldonado. -- his old mate Pastor Maldonado.

:02:11. > :02:17.Another outstanding effort from di Resta.

:02:17. > :02:22.TEAM RADIO: P1 by half a second! Excellent drive.

:02:22. > :02:28.That is quite something. It's almost 40 years to the day since

:02:29. > :02:33.McLaren's first-ever pole, Peter Revson in Canada in 1972. Hamilton

:02:33. > :02:37.has done it. Just a quick mention that di Resta - a good effort by

:02:38. > :02:42.him. Sixth. It was partly helped by some of them not coming out. Even

:02:42. > :02:46.so, he was quicker than Webber. That is a surprise. He was quicker

:02:46. > :02:52.than Romain Grosjean as well. great effort from Paul di Resta.

:02:52. > :02:57.Force India will be very happy with that. They are battling in the

:02:57. > :03:00.Constructors' Championship, of course. The man, of course, that

:03:01. > :03:08.will be most happy, Lewis Hamilton. We heard from his engineer there.

:03:08. > :03:11.You are on pole position by more than half a second! He dominated.

:03:11. > :03:15.Pastor Maldonado - we have never doubted his speed. Let's see what

:03:15. > :03:19.he can do tomorrow and convert that great qualifying on the front row.

:03:19. > :03:23.Yeah. He's been on the front row and won in Barcelona this year. He

:03:23. > :03:27.has not scored any points since then. It is Hamilton who has taken

:03:27. > :03:33.pole position here. Maldonado for Williams, a brilliant second.

:03:33. > :03:38.Vettel third. Button fourth and Alonso in fifth ahead of di Resta,

:03:38. > :03:44.Mark Webber, then Romain Grosjean, ahead of the two Mercedes of

:03:44. > :03:52.Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg and Schumacher outqualifies Rosberg.

:03:52. > :03:57.Hulkenberg 11th. Raikkonen 12th. Massa, Perez, Ricciardo, Vergne,

:03:57. > :04:03.then Senna, Kobayashi, Petrov, Kovalainen and Karthikeyan just

:04:03. > :04:07.outqualified Pedro de la Rosa as well. Sebastian Vettel couldn't

:04:07. > :04:16.manage to challenge Lewis Hamilton and Hamilton has taken his 24th

:04:16. > :04:24.career pole. He now equals the greats of Nicky Lauder and Nelson

:04:24. > :04:28.Piquet in terms of his pole tally. JAKE HUMPHREY: Congratulations,

:04:28. > :04:35.Lewis. It was a double shock for Sebastian Vettel who we know

:04:35. > :04:38.Sebastian Vettel who we know fancied his chances around here.

:04:38. > :04:42.Also Pastor Maldonado showing that despite not scoring points in the

:04:42. > :04:44.last few races, he has got incredible speed behind the wheel.

:04:45. > :04:50.So another pole position for McLaren. They haven't got the

:04:51. > :04:54.points, but they have the form at this stage. EDDIE JORDAN: If ever

:04:54. > :04:59.there was a message to be given to McLaren, that is it today. Break

:04:59. > :05:03.the bank, boys, sign him! It's going to be so difficult to replace

:05:03. > :05:08.him. The man who makes that final decision is Martin Whitmarsh. Let's

:05:08. > :05:13.hear from him. A great qualifying session and when it mattered Lewis

:05:13. > :05:20.stepped up to the plate? It was ominous all weekend. Sebastian

:05:20. > :05:25.Vettel has looked very strong. And in Q1. But I think Lewis timed it

:05:25. > :05:33.well. He come good. Quickest in Q2 and then he did it at the right

:05:33. > :05:38.time. Did a great job. It is a great place to start for Jenson. A

:05:38. > :05:46.little bit of disappointment. He kept it cool. He's on the second

:05:46. > :05:49.row. It's a long race. I think it will be a great race as well.

:05:49. > :05:54.Certainly sitting behind Pastor Maldonado, does that get a bit of a

:05:54. > :05:58.quiver going on? I hope we make a clean start! Well done.

:05:58. > :06:03.Congratulations to Martin Whitmarsh and to McLaren. Sebastian Vettel

:06:03. > :06:10.just digesting the news that he wasn't the quickest man. You say

:06:10. > :06:15.that they need to sign Lewis Hamilton up. They are a team that

:06:15. > :06:19.have shown him they can build a car to be on pole? He is the cream of

:06:19. > :06:23.the crop at the moment. He is proving that time and time again.

:06:23. > :06:27.Whilst there's two suitors out there for him, Mercedes and McLaren,

:06:27. > :06:34.McLaren have always traditionally, if you look back over the history

:06:34. > :06:39.of the Prost and the Senna days, they are not going to find much

:06:39. > :06:44.better than what Lewis Hamilton is able to deliver. From the sponsors'

:06:44. > :06:54.point of view, I would be putting the best possible deal forward to

:06:54. > :06:54.

:06:55. > :06:58.make it easy for Lewis to drive for McLaren. Let's hear from Sebastian

:06:58. > :07:07.Vettel's team boss. The during the practice sessions it

:07:07. > :07:13.looked as though pole was going to be a formality. But that was a big

:07:13. > :07:20.gap? We lost our rhythm on outlaps in Q3. So, yes, most cars went

:07:20. > :07:25.three or four-tenths quicker in Q3. Seb was a tenth slower. So we seem

:07:25. > :07:30.to lose a little bit of rhythm there. It's a long, hard race

:07:30. > :07:36.tomorrow. We have a quick car. Hopefully, we can have a good start.

:07:36. > :07:40.The long run yesterday looked consistent? Yes, it's tough on the

:07:40. > :07:44.tyres here. It's a long race. Probably the longest race of the

:07:44. > :07:49.year. It's very physically demanding. It is punishing on the

:07:49. > :07:54.tyres. So it's going to be a fascinating race. The last race,

:07:54. > :07:58.the alternator problem cropped up again. Any worries for here?

:07:58. > :08:04.Renault have assured us they have fixed it. Hopefully, it should be

:08:04. > :08:08.all right. I would get that in writing! Me, too! The issue with

:08:08. > :08:13.that alternator is you don't know whether it is repaired until you

:08:13. > :08:16.start racing? Well, it is always one of those unknown things. People

:08:16. > :08:21.in teams, like Christian, they like to have certain controls. Things

:08:21. > :08:25.that are bought in, like engines, you are always sceptical about them

:08:25. > :08:29.and you shouldn't be, but you just are. They are the one things that

:08:29. > :08:37.can always come back and bite you. Well, 12 months ago, this was a

:08:37. > :08:45.fantastic race for a Paul di Resta. You start from sixth tomorrow. What

:08:46. > :08:50.was it like out there? It's hot! I think we were relatively confident

:08:50. > :08:56.yesterday we had a good car. We put some new bits in the car and

:08:56. > :09:00.struggled in FP3. We went "back to basics" and managed to pull out a

:09:00. > :09:06.lap time better each time we went out. P6 is not a bad job

:09:06. > :09:11.considering this car isn't optimising high downforce. Give us

:09:11. > :09:18.an idea of the work that has been going on. Paul was wailing on the

:09:18. > :09:24.radio, "I've got no grip!" And you put in a fantastic lap like that.

:09:24. > :09:28.What's been done in the garage? engineer was confident. He pulled

:09:28. > :09:32.me in the office, he said, "This is the plan. Go in the hospitality and

:09:32. > :09:37.come back. This will be a different car." Credit to him, he's done it.

:09:37. > :09:40.He understands it. When you have a good working relationship with him,

:09:40. > :09:45.and having seen the confidence, we will grow stronger. Paul, we have

:09:45. > :09:48.seen your car with some problems in the past, with KERS. Is this the

:09:48. > :09:53.time to consolidate your position or do you want to push hard for a

:09:53. > :09:57.good result on the podium tomorrow? We always want to push. Being

:09:57. > :10:05.realistic, I would sign up for sixth tomorrow, where we are

:10:05. > :10:08.starting. Our race performance has been a struggle. It seems an

:10:08. > :10:11.improvement from yesterday. Tomorrow is another day. We are

:10:11. > :10:16.hopeful to put ourselves in a good position to maintain a good points

:10:16. > :10:20.position. We saw neither Mercedes going out there. They can stay in

:10:20. > :10:24.the garage. That leans us towards thinking they will go out on the

:10:24. > :10:28.softer tyre. There is high degradation. Did you discuss that

:10:28. > :10:32.within the team? Yeah, this is a street track. Any position is a key.

:10:32. > :10:37.We took the decision to run. It was the right decision. We have been

:10:37. > :10:40.quicker than Mercedes this weekend. We should certainly not be focused

:10:40. > :10:46.on being behind them. Right. While you were having a cup of coffee,

:10:46. > :10:50.the team did their bit with the car. You did your bit on track. Well

:10:50. > :10:54.done. Thank you. Thanks very much, Paul. It is fascinating, the

:10:54. > :10:57.relationships between the drivers. I went down to Force India to do a

:10:57. > :11:01.tour with a child on Monday, the kid got the chance to interview

:11:01. > :11:06.Nico Hulkenberg. He said, "Who is your best friend in Formula One?"

:11:06. > :11:09.His answer, "None of the drivers, you can't be friends with a driver

:11:09. > :11:14.in Formula One." After the second part of qualifying, we were

:11:14. > :11:19.standing in here and he came past us with a face like thunder because

:11:19. > :11:24.he believes that the team made a mistake. That leaves him behind his

:11:25. > :11:29.team-mate, so a tough session for Nico Hulkenberg. Let's hear from

:11:30. > :11:36.him now. LEE MCKENZIE: Are you surprised to

:11:36. > :11:45.be out in Q2? Yes, surprised. I think I know the reason. I'm

:11:45. > :11:50.frustrated. What is the reason? the guys who were starting the lap,

:11:50. > :11:55.they were on a hot lap, so I had to let pass. Starting the lap, I

:11:55. > :11:58.couldn't get a feel for the car. It is difficult to feel where the grip

:11:58. > :12:02.level is which affected the second start of the lap. You don't have a

:12:02. > :12:06.reference, you don't know where the grip is going to be. Therefore the

:12:06. > :12:09.first sector wasn't good enough. The rest of the lap was not good

:12:09. > :12:17.enough either. It is a shame. We had a Q3 car today for sure. That

:12:17. > :12:25.is why I'm not happy at all. Frustration for Nico Hulkenberg. I

:12:25. > :12:29.have enjoyed watching this battle unfold at Force India. Who has the

:12:29. > :12:34.momentum? One week one is on top, then it is the other one. It is

:12:34. > :12:38.hard to quantify. What is spectacular here, both these

:12:38. > :12:43.drivers are on the top teams' lists. We talked about this cascading

:12:43. > :12:47.effect of Schumacher, if he goes, if he stays. These two drivers will

:12:47. > :12:52.play a very important part of the next run of moves. That was Nico

:12:52. > :12:57.Rosberg, who didn't have much to do in the final part of qualifying.

:12:57. > :12:59.Let's hear from the men at the front, it is time for the press

:13:00. > :13:04.conference. Well done, Lewis, a phenomenal

:13:04. > :13:09.margin, very, very quick indeed. Well done. Thank you. Thank you.

:13:09. > :13:14.The guys have done a fantastic job all week. To come here with some

:13:14. > :13:18.small things that have improved from the last race. We have high

:13:18. > :13:22.downforce here, so we weren't sure where we would turn out against the

:13:22. > :13:26.others. Obviously, Sebastian was incredibly fast through most of the

:13:26. > :13:30.session. Not sure what happened at the end. None the less, really very,

:13:30. > :13:34.very happy that I was able to pull that time out. A great lap, very

:13:34. > :13:39.happy with it. It must be a very, very difficult circuit indeed. We

:13:39. > :13:43.saw you make a couple of mistakes in Q1. Very tricky around here?

:13:43. > :13:47.is. It is, absolutely. Trying to find the gap is quite difficult,

:13:48. > :13:51.particularly in Q1. And making sure your tyres are up to temperature,

:13:51. > :13:57.making sure your brakes are up to temperature without using them

:13:57. > :14:00.before you start your lap. And yeah, my first few laps that I did on the

:14:00. > :14:04.prime was quite poor. And I feel very fortunate that I was able to

:14:05. > :14:10.get at least one lap on them so I didn't have to go again. Well done.

:14:10. > :14:15.Thank you. Pastor, where did that lap come from? Well done. I think

:14:15. > :14:21.we were working very hard because at the beginning of the weekend and

:14:21. > :14:27.during the practice we were a bit lost with the set-up. Yeah, we were

:14:27. > :14:35.improving, especially in the qualifying, trying to do a lap in

:14:35. > :14:38.the car to my style. Yeah. We find naturally well-balanced especially

:14:38. > :14:43.in qualifying two and then qualifying three. I am looking

:14:43. > :14:52.forward to the race because yesterday we saw very good pace,

:14:52. > :14:59.very consistent. I think it will be Sebastian, disappointed with third

:15:00. > :15:05.place? I didn't know how we could not do this step. But it is a good

:15:05. > :15:12.position to start from and it is a long rest and a lot of things can

:15:12. > :15:19.happen. If you don't do the last step in qualifying, it is a shame

:15:19. > :15:23.because I think the speed was there. An element of frustration for

:15:23. > :15:26.Sebastian Vettel, who knows how vital pole position is on this

:15:26. > :15:31.track and that belongs to Lewis Hamilton, alongside Pastor

:15:31. > :15:35.Maldonado, who showed that he might not have discipline but he has the

:15:35. > :15:39.speed. Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button on the second row and then

:15:39. > :15:44.the leader in 5th place, Fernando Alonso starting alongside Paul di

:15:44. > :15:52.Resta. He will be delighted. Grosjean, back in the car after

:15:52. > :15:54.that ban, qualifying in eighth place and Mercedes side by side.

:15:54. > :15:59.Hulkenberg, he thought the car could have made it through to the

:15:59. > :16:06.final part. Felipe Massa in 13th place, more pressure on him

:16:06. > :16:11.alongside Sergio Perez. The hand well done, down the Ricciardo, just

:16:11. > :16:19.ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne. Bruno Senna, plenty of incidents and the

:16:19. > :16:29.same applies to Kobayashi, just in front of the Caterham cars. Then

:16:29. > :16:31.

:16:31. > :16:35.Timo Glock and Charles Pic. And congratulations to... Quite a busy

:16:35. > :16:40.weekend so far and busy qualifying. Always the way around these

:16:40. > :16:46.straight circuit. Lewis Hamilton, fantastic. Pastor Maldonado, he

:16:46. > :16:50.really show that he has that speed? The never doubted that speed, he

:16:50. > :16:55.had the front row in Barcelona. We know what happened when he was not

:16:55. > :16:58.in the front row and I don't suspect we will see any penalties

:16:58. > :17:02.from McLaren after that impressive qualifying from Lewis Hamilton but

:17:02. > :17:08.it will be interesting to the first corner. On the left-hand side, the

:17:08. > :17:14.dirty side, that will mean Hamilton should get that clean run. But you

:17:14. > :17:18.get that concertina effect. And it shall be uncomfortable. We often

:17:18. > :17:21.make something of it but will Lewis Hamilton really be looking at the

:17:21. > :17:26.fact that Pastor Maldonado is thinking, we have history, or is

:17:26. > :17:30.that not important? History does not matter particularly but there

:17:30. > :17:33.are a different agenda is. Maldonado needs to win and Lewis

:17:33. > :17:38.Hamilton would like to win but does not need to to be in a position to

:17:38. > :17:41.win the championship. You can always tell whether drivers are

:17:41. > :17:45.because there is a real passion for Formula One and they walk along

:17:45. > :17:49.with lots of autograph hunters looking at a frustrated. He will

:17:50. > :17:53.know that there was Hamilton had remarkable speed in that car today

:17:53. > :18:02.and Lewis Hamilton is ahead of his team-mate. Would you care to take

:18:02. > :18:12.us on board and showers a hot lap in Singapore? This should be fun.

:18:12. > :18:15.

:18:15. > :18:21.the kerb. Gets into that very classic ride, powering through turn

:18:21. > :18:26.No. 8. This long right-hander, into the wall, this is where Grosjean

:18:26. > :18:32.had that big slide and Bruno Senna kissing the wall. Through this

:18:32. > :18:37.Mickey Mouse chicane, bang, bang, bang. Hitting your head.

:18:37. > :18:46.Uncomfortable through 11 and 12. The slowest part of the track, 40

:18:46. > :18:52.mph. Listen to that drive from the turn, he will have deployed Kers.

:18:52. > :19:01.80 changes to the gears around this. In contrast to one side, they were

:19:01. > :19:09.doing about 40. Working the back of the wheel hard. Getting into this

:19:09. > :19:17.section, made famous by Nelson Piquet. Turn at number 18. Total

:19:18. > :19:27.confidence and commitment. 19, 20. 21, sorry. And down to the last

:19:28. > :19:35.

:19:35. > :19:38.turn, through the gears. He just did exactly what you're supposed to.

:19:38. > :19:47.Using the limit of the tyres and as you can see, we have lost one

:19:47. > :19:57.microphone. Apologies for the sound. Let us move and see if it improves.

:19:57. > :20:01.

:20:01. > :20:09.Welcome back. Eddie, McLaren? How # How will they feel? They have

:20:09. > :20:12.momentum. On the drivers are one to concentrate on this particular

:20:12. > :20:17.season and next season will look after itself. They have the

:20:17. > :20:21.momentum. We have seen in years gone by, the momentum carries you

:20:21. > :20:25.all the way. The person sitting back and thinking the last person I

:20:25. > :20:29.want to see winning this is Hamilton and that would be Fernando

:20:29. > :20:35.Alonso. He has other drivers effectively driving for him but the

:20:35. > :20:42.one person he is in danger of his Lewis Hamilton. I am glad you can

:20:42. > :20:50.hear us again. Let's hear from Jenson Button. That was a long slog,

:20:50. > :20:54.was it worth 4th place? Not too bad. Not as good as my team-mate but for

:20:54. > :21:01.me, the hole qualifying and pretty much all day, all weekend, I have

:21:01. > :21:11.really struggled on one lap to pitted together. With degradation

:21:11. > :21:11.

:21:11. > :21:16.through the laps. This could be tricky for us. Thank you. Jenson

:21:16. > :21:20.Button, title hopes over? Were there be some conversation tonight

:21:20. > :21:24.amongst the team? There are enough points available from here until

:21:24. > :21:28.the end of the season which would equal but Fernando Alonso has at

:21:29. > :21:33.the current lead. In theory, somebody has not even scorer. Could

:21:33. > :21:38.come back. I know that is stretching it, but it has been a

:21:38. > :21:45.disappointing Saturday. It is a long race and mistakes can happen.

:21:45. > :21:50.We could have the safety car. Fernando Alonso won from 15th place

:21:51. > :21:57.with the benefit of teamwork. This year, the Windsor coming from the

:21:57. > :22:00.front row but you cannot ride them off. If you're the bus at McLaren...

:22:00. > :22:06.Would you have a conversation between the drivers? As Le to. You

:22:06. > :22:10.would have to say, look, I want to both far away and I wanted to have

:22:11. > :22:16.a very strong West but Jenson, you have always been the most brilliant

:22:16. > :22:19.team player, and if there is any chance that you can legitimately

:22:19. > :22:24.hold up somebody like Fernando Alonso, you have to do that in the

:22:24. > :22:28.interests of the team. And very soon, as a team principal, you will

:22:28. > :22:33.have to start thinking, where does the team get the most results? It's

:22:33. > :22:37.not just about drivers, it's about people and sponsors and positions

:22:37. > :22:43.in the championship and Lewis Hamilton has everything going for

:22:43. > :22:48.him to take this fight to Fernando Alonso. Jenson Button, he does not

:22:48. > :22:52.have that confidence at this particular moment. You want to go

:22:52. > :22:59.out and when but ever if it was set up perfectly for Jenson Button with

:22:59. > :23:03.Lewis Hamilton in first, this is the race. I don't disagree but it

:23:03. > :23:08.might be too early. Jenson Button had a bad weekend so far but we

:23:08. > :23:12.have to wait and see how the race unfolds tomorrow. What happens at

:23:12. > :23:17.Pastor Maldonado and Lewis Hamilton it went for a ride on to the rumble

:23:17. > :23:23.strips? Why demoted it the other driver before you even know what

:23:23. > :23:25.has happened? The time to make that call is when the race is unfolding,

:23:25. > :23:29.and they're both mature drivers and Jenson Button is more than capable

:23:29. > :23:34.of taking an instruction within regulations if that it's to be done

:23:34. > :23:44.it. But to have a conversation tomorrow afternoon, before the race,

:23:44. > :23:44.

:23:45. > :23:49.why? You're saying, you're taking away his motor. Let's hear from the

:23:49. > :23:55.man who starts in 5th place, the championship leader, the man who

:23:55. > :23:59.would love to get first in this race. Fernando Alonso. Be don't

:23:59. > :24:05.like to call at your usual position, but 5th place is sometimes were you

:24:05. > :24:12.end up. How do you feel? They must be happy with the position because

:24:12. > :24:18.we have been struggling all weekend and we have not been quick enough.

:24:18. > :24:22.When we see the times Night, McLaren have been unreachable, so

:24:22. > :24:25.starting from the queenside on offer us some possibilities to

:24:25. > :24:31.fight for points tomorrow, which is maybe the maximum we have this

:24:31. > :24:35.weekend. Do you have to be in the front in a race like this?

:24:35. > :24:42.Kaupthing strategy will be a big part of tomorrow. We saw last year

:24:42. > :24:46.with the degradation and the stops, and we need to take care of the

:24:46. > :24:53.tyres and take care of the stops and when we do it. And the start,

:24:53. > :24:59.many things can play tomorrow. The weather here, thunderstorms are

:24:59. > :25:04.always a possibility so let's wait. Rain would be quite nice here. It's

:25:04. > :25:09.still very hot. We heard from Fernando Alonso, he decided to run

:25:09. > :25:12.on the super-soft tyres, did this surprise you? I don't think

:25:12. > :25:17.anything should surprise in Formula One. The team will play to their

:25:17. > :25:19.strengths and they have not been quick through the three practice

:25:19. > :25:23.sessions and they feel the best way of getting a result is to do

:25:23. > :25:27.something different and we saw that with Perez in Monza, starting with

:25:27. > :25:31.different tyres and that worked perfectly. Inside the top 10, they

:25:31. > :25:35.get to start on preferred tyres, which last longer, and see how it

:25:35. > :25:38.plays out. If you do the same as everyone else, you end up the same

:25:38. > :25:45.way. Let's hear quickly from the man who might have been involved in

:25:45. > :25:50.that position, Michael Schumacher... It was the strategy game, compared

:25:50. > :25:56.to others, that I hope will pay off tomorrow. It is something that we

:25:56. > :26:02.have studied beforehand but looking finally at Q3, we decided to use

:26:02. > :26:09.the strategy. At what stage to do side to make that? Was it always in

:26:09. > :26:12.the plan? -- acts -- at what stage did you decide. You have to see

:26:12. > :26:19.what happens at the time. We did not have a good day yesterday but

:26:19. > :26:24.we proved ourselves from then on. If you look at today, it would have

:26:24. > :26:27.been many possible to catch another position but having a fresh tyres

:26:27. > :26:33.and may be the choice of strategy tomorrow, we filed, was something

:26:33. > :26:39.that be preferred and therefore we opted for that. Eddie Jordan says

:26:40. > :26:44.that will be confirmed on Wednesday. As some estate but plenty more

:26:44. > :26:50.sport coming your way from the BBC this afternoon, including the world

:26:50. > :26:56.road racing championships live from Holland. We will be back with all

:26:56. > :27:04.of the talk from the paddock. 6:45pm on the BBC News Channel. And

:27:04. > :27:07.the Grand Prix is live tomorrow at 12:10pm. Set up beautifully? I am

:27:07. > :27:12.so looking forward to this because the permutations are immense.

:27:12. > :27:20.Pastor Maldonado, what has gone through the head of Lewis Hamilton

:27:20. > :27:26.I cannot even think. He would dream about the fact that the last three

:27:27. > :27:30.races have been one here by the man on pole position. Job done today,

:27:30. > :27:39.perfect, now he just says to what he does best which is convert that

:27:39. > :27:44.to victory. Play the long game? Fernando Alonso is the best racer

:27:44. > :27:49.at this moment over the season and he will be there to pick up all the

:27:49. > :27:55.points and he will defend his championship lead. Gentlemen, thank
