:02:53. > :02:58.nobody has one who hasn't started in the front row. Last year,
:02:58. > :03:02.Sebastian Vettel went on to win, Mark Webber was on pole, but this

:03:11. > :03:15.a fresh start by a lot of the teams. It is a fresh start and we must
:03:15. > :03:19.remember there have been four different constructors winning

:03:28. > :03:32.leading by the tiniest of margins, he knows there are a lot of very

:03:40. > :03:45.enjoying it on Twitter and throughout the weekend, you can get
:03:45. > :03:49.in touch and share your thoughts. Eddie Jordan normally spends most

:04:50. > :04:55.Spanish matador who has struggled against the ball for the last
:04:55. > :04:59.couple of seasons, Fernando Alonso. This is reminiscent of your glory
:04:59. > :05:03.days at Silverstone, they love him. He has transformed the following of
:05:03. > :05:07.Formula One, it didn't have too much until he won those back-to-
:05:07. > :05:12.back championships. He seems so comfortable within Ferrari, he is
:05:12. > :05:15.enjoying the home crowd. We are trying to convince Eddie to get
:05:15. > :05:19.onto Twitter and Fernando Alonso has gone on there in the last
:05:19. > :05:22.couple of weeks to embrace the crowd. And he has given us some
:05:22. > :05:26.insight into the tight team he has around him and the training and
:05:26. > :05:29.lifestyle and the commitment that he has. He spends a lot of time at

:05:50. > :05:55.Grand Prix. This is pure people power. This is the attraction he
:05:55. > :05:58.has got. Six weeks from now, we are in Valencia and it takes a lot of
:05:58. > :06:02.marketing and people at their commercially trying to sell the
:06:02. > :06:06.programme but they are able to do it, and they are able to do it
:06:06. > :06:09.because of Fernando Alonso. And it is the way he goes about achieving
:06:09. > :06:13.is the way he goes about achieving it. Yes, he is totally committed to
:06:13. > :06:16.the cause. He has been smiling through difficult times with
:06:16. > :06:21.Ferrari but he knows he has to keep the team together. If the driver
:06:21. > :06:25.loses faith, the whole thing can come apart. The Latin temperament
:06:25. > :06:31.is very much in his blood and absurdity runs through Ferrari.
:06:31. > :06:37.When a man with the skill set of Fernando Alonso is struggling...

:07:18. > :07:24.Fernando Alonso just squeezing in front of Jenson Button. Look at
:07:24. > :07:30.Nico Rosberg. Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are going wheel-to-wheel.
:07:30. > :07:40.Hamilton passes Nico Rosberg! Jenson Button battling with Alonso,
:07:40. > :07:40.
:07:40. > :07:50.wheel-to-wheel once again. Jenson Button has got in front of Alonso.
:07:50. > :07:51.
:07:51. > :07:55.Looking to go on the inside, a quite as hard as he would have done
:07:55. > :07:59.if it wasn't his team-mate. Nico Rosberg tried to get past the
:07:59. > :08:03.Ferrari, he slips and slides and does it.
:08:03. > :08:13.That was really marginal for Nico Rosberg, he pushed Fernando Alonso

:08:30. > :08:35.can't make it because Sebastian Grand Prix for Jenson Button.
:08:35. > :08:40.Sebastian Vettel wins in Bahrain! It is the first triple winner of
:08:40. > :08:44.2012. Kimi Raikkonen finished second, Sebastian Grosjean --
:08:44. > :08:49.Romain Grosjean fared. What a race it was the Lotus. And
:08:49. > :08:54.anybody getting a sense of deja-vu? Look at the man leading the
:08:54. > :08:59.standards -- standings. Last year, Sebastian Vettel had a 34 point
:08:59. > :09:03.lead in the standings and this here, it separates the top nine. That is
:09:03. > :09:07.what is making this year so special already, because I haven't got the
:09:07. > :09:11.slightest idea who will come away with a win. We have seen the
:09:11. > :09:16.emergence of the Lotus and the BMW Sauber and they cannot be written
:09:16. > :09:20.off this year. That is what is making it so special. And how well
:09:20. > :09:24.Red Bull have felt heading for the break not only leading the drivers'
:09:24. > :09:29.but also the constructors. They have broken the 100 point barrier.
:09:29. > :09:33.David, it is not just close in the standings, it is also close on the
:09:33. > :09:37.track in final practice. One second track in final practice. One second
:09:37. > :09:42.separating the top 10 cars. Yes, and there was the tale of a lot of
:09:42. > :09:46.cars struggling to get performance. We can see the Mercedes team here.
:09:46. > :09:50.They are just getting the final preparations done here, with about
:09:50. > :09:55.40 minutes to go until the start of qualifying. Michael got the bid
:09:55. > :10:00.blocked on his run on his new tyres this morning, Lewis Hamilton had a
:10:00. > :10:04.similar situation. They had to go to the stewards did discuss it, we
:10:04. > :10:08.haven't had the outcome. The pressure is on. Michael is
:10:08. > :10:12.certainly in the mix and the race in Bahrain is an exciting one. He
:10:12. > :10:18.finished 10th with some tasty overtaking. We enjoyed it. He has
:10:18. > :10:21.not lost anything when he -- it comes to his racing ability. This
:10:21. > :10:28.is where they are squabbling over is where they are squabbling over
:10:28. > :10:31.position and he just keeps to the right. Later in the corner, again,
:10:31. > :10:39.A Williams getting down inside the Toro Rosso and Michael Gray's the
:10:39. > :10:44.situation perfectly. -- Michael reads the situation perfectly. And
:10:44. > :10:47.here, the undercut on the Sauber. None of the racing ability has gone.
:10:47. > :10:51.He was very vocal about the difficulties he is facing what the
:10:51. > :10:57.Pirelli tyres, and a lot of drivers don't like it when you get a lot of
:10:57. > :11:00.degradation. But it is a fact of modern Grand Prix racing. Pirelli
:11:00. > :11:06.have been challenged to make close racing and they have done that by
:11:06. > :11:11.having a big spread between the tyres. Is it bad for Formula One?
:11:11. > :11:17.We will hear from Michael and Alguersuari in a moment, the test
:11:17. > :11:20.driver, but we have had people trying to find the shot of Lewis
:11:20. > :11:24.Hamilton and Michael Schumacher in practice. I am not saying you were
:11:24. > :11:31.naughty, but at, you have been in front of the stewards at few times.
:11:31. > :11:35.-- but Eddie, you have been. Would you expect a penalty for that? This
:11:35. > :11:42.is Michael rejoining in 15. Should he have been aware that Lewis was
:11:42. > :11:47.on his way? To be honest, he should have waited. If it was a road
:11:47. > :11:49.incident, you would certainly get a penalty for that, running out into
:11:49. > :11:56.the main straight from a side street or against the red light.
:11:56. > :12:03.That is just, manners, you give the guy the chance and let him go. --,
:12:03. > :12:10.and manners. A penalty, I think so, but I can't say. The last thing
:12:10. > :12:14.Michael the it is another penalty. Michael had gone out on to the old
:12:14. > :12:18.track and was rejoining, so having seen Lewis, did he gets out of the
:12:18. > :12:22.way fast enough? I don't think it was an issue of him going in front,
:12:22. > :12:27.but he was blocking Lewis. The stewards have all the details so it
:12:27. > :12:31.will be clear for them. To clear that up, the drivers are still in
:12:31. > :12:35.front of the stewards and they are deliberating it. Whenever the BBC
:12:35. > :12:40.are live in Formula One, you can see all of the practice sessions on
:12:40. > :12:43.the red Button. We talked about Michael Schumacher and his
:12:43. > :12:49.complaints about the tyres, after that the drive in Bahrain, he
:12:49. > :12:54.didn't get out with a smile on his face, he got out and told us this.
:12:54. > :12:59.I don't really feel satisfied with this event, because you sort of
:12:59. > :13:04.drive at a pace that is given by the tyres. We should question
:13:04. > :13:08.ourselves whether that should be the case, because 80-90% of the
:13:08. > :13:12.field, if they all complain about the same problem, maybe Pirelli
:13:12. > :13:17.should think about it and do something, because I don't think it
:13:17. > :13:21.is right that one or two teams can only be happy, even they are
:13:21. > :13:29.probably not happy, and the rest struggle so much. You feel like you
:13:29. > :13:33.are running behind the safety car. Alguersuari has joined us, the Toro
:13:33. > :13:38.Rosso driver last season but now a summariser for the BBC and a test
:13:38. > :13:42.driver for Pirelli. He raced on the tyres last week and you did some
:13:42. > :13:47.distance tests on Wednesday, do you agree with what Michael has had to
:13:47. > :13:54.say? Is it not good for Formula One? I think it is different for
:13:54. > :14:02.Formula One. They have brought the tyres that they were asked to,
:14:02. > :14:06.designed to last 100m, 150 kilometres, and Michael Schumacher
:14:06. > :14:10.knew this he knew that Pirelli was coming here. And for every one it
:14:10. > :14:14.is the same product. You have to deal with that, it is a different
:14:14. > :14:18.kind of racing and we all drive to get the maximum out of the car and
:14:18. > :14:22.you have to deal with that. Michael might not be enjoying it,
:14:22. > :14:27.but who cares? Millions of people around the world are saying it is
:14:27. > :14:33.exciting, isn't that what matters? Michael is clearly out of order in
:14:33. > :14:35.my opinion. Nothing can be as good as they show and the show is
:14:35. > :14:40.phenomenal and Pirelli have subscribed to that and they have
:14:40. > :14:45.done a fantastic job, exactly what they have to do. Michael Schumacher,
:14:45. > :14:50.get on with it. We love your driving but not these comments.
:14:50. > :14:56.said 70 are 80% don't like it, what have they said it to you? -- 70 or
:14:56. > :14:59.80. One of the key assets of highly talented drivers and people in
:14:59. > :15:02.these positions is they make statements that sweep everybody
:15:02. > :15:07.else in, whether they agree or not. The drivers are more than capable
:15:07. > :15:11.of making their own comments and no one else has complained. It is
:15:11. > :15:16.difficult, isn't it, because Sergio Perez for example makes a virtue of
:15:16. > :15:20.stopping once in a race and there is no doubt he drives every single
:15:20. > :15:27.lap several seconds off his optimum pace, but is it any less valuable
:15:27. > :15:31.than a driver who wring the neck of a car? The driver is always
:15:31. > :15:34.important but the car is always crucial. We have been to very rough
:15:34. > :15:37.circuits with high temperatures and softer tyres, so you know it is
:15:37. > :15:42.very remarkable, but if you don't have the balance, you can't do
:15:42. > :15:45.anything. Something that is a struggle with Mercedes, because
:15:46. > :15:49.with higher temperatures, they always struggle to get consistency
:15:49. > :15:55.and also on the driving style, it is making a huge difference and I
:15:55. > :15:58.can feel it, I see if I tried it in one way or the other, how the
:15:58. > :16:03.balance is changing and how the tyres degrade. Thank you for
:16:03. > :16:13.joining us. I know you have had a busy week. The poor boy is finding
:16:13. > :16:15.
:16:15. > :16:25.because it not just tyres people are been talking about this weekend.
:16:25. > :16:27.
:16:27. > :16:32.McLaren's sleek and chic nose is being prepared by a higher nose as
:16:32. > :16:37.they hope a design change might help their Championship chances.
:16:37. > :16:44.What I believe, having the nose higher does is give you cleaner air,
:16:44. > :16:49.cleaner air under the car. Which then goes to the rear of the floor,
:16:49. > :16:54.so hopefully with that, it is what other people have, so we had to
:16:54. > :16:58.explore it to see if it works for us. EasyJet is -- Jenson Button is
:16:58. > :17:02.looking for his first pole but he thinks he could see a mix up thanks
:17:02. > :17:06.to the tyres. The difference here in qualifying is that you have the
:17:06. > :17:12.hard and the soft, so you have a bigger spread if you like, before
:17:12. > :17:15.it was the, it was the medium or soft, or hard and medium, so it is
:17:15. > :17:21.different here, so Q1 will be more difficult to get through. You will
:17:21. > :17:25.see more cars using the soft tyre there. Mark Webber Geth might be
:17:25. > :17:29.getting six of fourth after finishing in that position in every
:17:29. > :17:32.race this season. It means he is five points off the lead in the
:17:32. > :17:38.Championship. If you have a rough day, you can be, long way down the
:17:38. > :17:43.points and that is the other thing which is evidence in years gone by.
:17:43. > :17:47.You drop a nut in the pit lane and the guys are out of the podium.
:17:47. > :17:51.Fernando Alonso made a great start last year, taking the lead and this
:17:51. > :17:55.season he is also made great breaks from the lights. This weekend he is
:17:55. > :17:59.hoping to be starting a bit further forward. If we can start in the
:17:59. > :18:02.first row of the grid, it is much better because you don't knead do
:18:02. > :18:07.anything special. That will be the target to, get a good qualifier and
:18:07. > :18:13.improve our qualifying position that, so far in the first four
:18:13. > :18:16.racing has not been great. It is very difficult then for the race.
:18:16. > :18:21.Sauber has brought Formula One and football together, going into
:18:21. > :18:25.partnership with Chelsea. The focus is on youth sport development and
:18:25. > :18:29.business opportunities. We very very similar charge, with work with
:18:29. > :18:34.high performance athletes, you have to build them up, which has been a
:18:34. > :18:39.heritage at sauber. The same way Chelsea have their academy. We know
:18:39. > :18:42.they have the same values in bring up young talent. And finally, for
:18:42. > :18:49.fans who don't have tickets for Silverstone there is still way you
:18:49. > :18:55.can take part in the race. Upload your photo, and make a donation for
:18:55. > :18:59.Wings for Life. It is to find a cure for spinal cord injuries so
:18:59. > :19:03.your photo gets on the side pod on the front wing or rear wing, where
:19:04. > :19:07.ever we have space, and you race with us, so I think David had it a
:19:07. > :19:10.couple of years ago and it was a large success for the foundation,
:19:10. > :19:16.so we decided to do it again, so people can race with Mark and
:19:16. > :19:22.myself. So Davis has done his bit for charity. I think he should do
:19:22. > :19:26.it on the car as well. Shall we take a photo of all four of us so
:19:26. > :19:35.we can do our bit for charity. Lean in and smile everybody. Brilliant.
:19:35. > :19:44.It is moments like that where Eddie makes everybody look pale. He was
:19:44. > :19:48.taking a photograph of just himself. You were sec, is that genuine pace?
:19:48. > :19:53.With a new air package it is looking strong on the race base,
:19:53. > :20:00.and hopefully it will be a great weekend here. William is pushing so
:20:00. > :20:08.hard, so it is looking good. We have seen so many great FW cards,
:20:08. > :20:13.now we know FW70 my old pal Frank, what it is like driving for him?
:20:13. > :20:17.Frank is a very special person for the team, you know, he is quite,
:20:17. > :20:24.quite good with the drives you know, he spend a lot of time with me and
:20:25. > :20:31.even with Bruno, trying to help us, emotionally, you know, to keep us
:20:31. > :20:36.calm and try to keep it under control. The situation in the team.
:20:37. > :20:42.Really happy to be part of the team, of his team raeenedly happy to
:20:42. > :20:47.drive for him. How much you compromising your ultimate
:20:47. > :20:51.qualifying set up to make shoe sure you have a good race card because
:20:51. > :20:56.you have to start on the tiers you qualify. It is a big compromise
:20:56. > :21:03.between qualifying and the race. I think especially because of the
:21:03. > :21:06.heat, the warm, you get more tyre degradation, so we need to be be
:21:06. > :21:11.very careful on the right set up, for tomorrow, the race is going to
:21:11. > :21:17.be too long, here and even the track is so straight for the rare
:21:17. > :21:22.tyres, and you know, it is a big compromise against the settle up.
:21:22. > :21:30.It will be a long hot race. Thank you for joining us, are you going
:21:30. > :21:34.to steal my phone or do I get that stpwhabg interesting pastor saying
:21:34. > :21:39.that the car is looking fast at the moment. Williams have been at the
:21:39. > :21:49.recent tests with the other teams here, and Gary Anderson having been
:21:49. > :21:52.
:21:52. > :21:59.to many tests has now been to one just for you. We are head for the
:21:59. > :22:02.circuit in Italy which is the first big inseason test for the Formula
:22:02. > :22:07.One team. The pressure is on Ferrari, for the trarry supporter,
:22:07. > :22:11.they want to see a step forward. After the first four races they
:22:11. > :22:15.have different thoughts, there are different things that you may
:22:15. > :22:23.discover in the first four races that you need to reconfirm, in one
:22:23. > :22:27.test, it is nice to have this opportunity. Engineering point, and
:22:27. > :22:31.from a drive's point of view we love testing ifpt is the challenge
:22:32. > :22:35.that gives you that that high of trying to make the cargo faster,
:22:35. > :22:40.have you succeeded? Making sure it work together. There is a lot of
:22:40. > :22:44.stuff we have to go through, a lot of laps we go through here which is
:22:44. > :22:47.the idea, to, you know, find the best possible package for the next
:22:47. > :22:52.race. Me personally, I love to go out on the track and have a look.
:22:52. > :22:58.It is so easy to stay in the pits and look at lap times and data. But
:22:58. > :23:01.to go on the track and look, see the driver driving the car. The
:23:01. > :23:05.driver can tell you about it, if you don't live that experience it
:23:05. > :23:10.is difficult to have that gut feeling where you are going to do
:23:10. > :23:17.next. This is an area where they work on mechanical set up. You can
:23:17. > :23:21.see what I mean, as they come into the right-hander here. More and
:23:21. > :23:27.more steering lock, that compromises the corner. When you
:23:27. > :23:35.put the power back in it hurts the rear tyres and that compounds it.
:23:35. > :23:39.This is an example of what they are testing here at Mugello. On the new
:23:39. > :23:44.nose this is all gone. As the airflow comes off it will be caught
:23:45. > :23:48.with this camera, so the side pods work better, when you get them to
:23:48. > :23:51.work better you gain rare down force. The back of the car will
:23:52. > :23:58.benefit. There is no point in putting these part tons car if you
:23:58. > :24:02.don't understand what they are doing. The car is sending back
:24:02. > :24:06.probably 100, 150 channels of data. Some will have been logged at 100
:24:06. > :24:10.times a second. Before the car is back in the pit they get a reading
:24:11. > :24:15.of what is going on. We are developing the car slowly. It is
:24:15. > :24:21.always race against the other guys, we know that some get an upgrade.
:24:21. > :24:27.We are trying to keep up with therges and nope -- hopefully catch
:24:27. > :24:31.up with them and overtame -- overtake them in the future. It is
:24:31. > :24:40.not just about fitting new points, for the pit stop crew it is
:24:40. > :24:44.rehearse, rehearse rehearse. But for no-one was this test more
:24:44. > :24:48.important than Ferrari. They know time is running out for Alonso to
:24:48. > :24:53.mount a challenge and this test, on a track they own, was their big
:24:53. > :24:58.chance to gain ground. On the nofrpbg final day the long-awaited
:24:58. > :25:05.new rear body work was unveiled. It showed promise in the early run,
:25:06. > :25:10.Alonso setting fast time. Then the news the team did not want to here.
:25:10. > :25:13.This is the last thing Ferrari needed day three of the test. He
:25:13. > :25:17.has gone into the tyre barrier, taking the nose off the car. With
:25:17. > :25:22.all the new parts, new exhaust system they need to do some running
:25:22. > :25:27.to understand the car a bit better. After frantic efforts and a two
:25:27. > :25:32.hour delay Alonso returned but in what little time remained nothing
:25:32. > :25:38.conclusive seemed to emerge. tried different configurations so
:25:38. > :25:42.far, each day we had a different one and different parts also. We
:25:42. > :25:48.know there is no imagine ebg button, in Barcelona we will be on pole
:25:48. > :25:53.position because even will improve their cars. By the end lon son was
:25:53. > :25:58.still a few tenths lower than Christian Gross with Sebastian
:25:58. > :26:01.Vettel second. Even the World Champion team is bemused as to who
:26:01. > :26:09.has the upper hand heading to Barcelona. Are you happy with the
:26:09. > :26:16.car. I have no idea, Ferrari with their new package, it will be close,
:26:16. > :26:26.it should provide a great race. must do it. We can't be fighting
:26:26. > :26:27.
:26:27. > :26:32.for 3 if ewant to fight for the Championship. And wouldn't Fernando
:26:32. > :26:39.Alonso love to do it here, during your Keir testing was commonplace,
:26:39. > :26:43.you spent hundreds of hours attest tracks improving the car.
:26:43. > :26:47.reason there isn't testing is to control cost but what a lot of the
:26:47. > :26:51.teams were doing was using it to validate the similar for technology
:26:51. > :26:56.because they spend hours and hours with the test drivers back tat
:26:56. > :27:00.factory, so it is a pros and cons of modern development but Ferrari a
:27:00. > :27:03.key weekend for them. The first time to bring new elements to the
:27:03. > :27:06.race track and prove it at the start of the season. We have spoken
:27:06. > :27:10.about how close, and that makes development on the car more
:27:10. > :27:15.important and Kerrouche, because just improving your car by a tenth
:27:15. > :27:18.or two can move you seven or eight places up the grid. Easily, that is
:27:18. > :27:22.the competitiveness of Formula One. It will happen as we go through the
:27:22. > :27:25.season, it won't be just because Mugello test, it will be different
:27:25. > :27:29.things that different teams will find and new updates as we go
:27:29. > :27:34.through the season. We will be kept in sus Spence right to the last
:27:34. > :27:38.race as to what is going to win this championship. Fresh from
:27:38. > :27:42.Mugello Gary Anderson is gearing up for start of qualifying. Before
:27:42. > :27:47.that, it is interesting because the teams moaned and growned about not
:27:47. > :27:52.having inseason testing then they moaned and growned and said Mugello
:27:52. > :27:56.wasn't much use, what was that about? I think the teams that went
:27:56. > :28:00.to Mugello, I think that came back with the most benefit. When you
:28:00. > :28:04.only get that one inseason, you have to make it work for you, the
:28:04. > :28:10.teams that didn't want it, that is a waste of time. We had a couple of
:28:10. > :28:16.glasses of lemonade in the bar, you were telling me you were impressed
:28:16. > :28:21.by Red Bull and Lotus.. The car looked well balanced. They can keep
:28:21. > :28:25.that racing line. They can find it, they did good work and got a good
:28:25. > :28:29.understanding of the tyres. Those glasss aren't just for show, you
:28:29. > :28:34.have had your eye trained on the cars, we are starting to see things
:28:34. > :28:38.filter back from testing to make them quicker. It is like everything,
:28:38. > :28:41.they have a lot of new aerodynamic stuff but the most visual but
:28:41. > :28:45.McLaren and the Ferrari, with the high nose here, you can see on the
:28:45. > :28:49.car on the left, they have done a new ver shunning they get more air
:28:49. > :28:53.under the nose and above the front wing so there is more air at the
:28:53. > :28:58.back of the car, so it helps the front wing to work better. These
:28:58. > :29:01.developers have to go on, the bridge across the top of the is hat
:29:01. > :29:07.si is to see if it would ruin vision for the drivers so they are
:29:07. > :29:11.teing something for the future. I think we will see it in the not too
:29:11. > :29:15.far future. Anything else ?. Ferrari had a visual change. The
:29:16. > :29:20.exhaust pipe exit in the coke bottle area, where the body work
:29:20. > :29:25.sweeps inside the rear wheel, they had a lot of blockage, the
:29:25. > :29:29.modification on the bottom. The new one, is basically tidying up the
:29:29. > :29:32.coke bottle area, allowing more flow. In other words it is not
:29:32. > :29:37.hurting the car. There isn't so much of a benefit but it is not
:29:37. > :29:42.hurting the car. Gary, thank you and good luck during qualifying.
:29:42. > :29:44.Thank you for that. Before we go we have a bit of news that from the
:29:44. > :29:49.stewards to say the Michael Schumacher-Lewis Hamilton incident
:29:49. > :29:53.we saw when Michael was rejoining the track, a reprimand for Michael
:29:53. > :29:57.but no penalty s that the right decision, do you think? Probably
:29:57. > :30:07.from me. He was made wear of the situation, it wasn't the right
:30:07. > :30:11.
:30:11. > :30:15.thing to do but a penalty would When they used to go to a season
:30:15. > :30:21.test, it used to be about making the car faster. What do you think
:30:21. > :30:25.will be made about Felipe Massa that being 11th fastest? A lot of
:30:25. > :30:30.teams are just trying to get a tyres switch on for that vital that,
:30:30. > :30:33.it can be two-tenths quicker in some cars to almost one second
:30:33. > :30:39.quicker in others. They will be studying the data from the morning
:30:40. > :30:44.session and they will be a bit more clued up for qualifying. Led scope
:30:44. > :30:48.for a one-day in the heat of the day and you can say the pit lane
:30:48. > :30:52.and -- let's go for a wander. In three or four minutes, it closes
:30:52. > :30:57.and we have to go into the paddock and the cars will start their final
:30:58. > :31:01.preparations for qualifying. While Ferrari are hoping to live up to
:31:01. > :31:05.expectations, Lotus are arguably exceeding theirs. They have already
:31:05. > :31:15.had a podium finish in Bahrain and they are focusing on getting their
:31:15. > :31:19.
:31:19. > :31:26.Romain Grosjean third, it is the first double podium for the team
:31:26. > :31:34.since 2006 and the first podium for the Lotus name in a long, long time.
:31:34. > :31:38.Well done to Romain Grosjean, his first podium in Formula One.
:31:38. > :31:45.To be on the podium was amazing and to be able to share that with
:31:45. > :31:51.everybody was special as well. If you had told me that before the
:31:51. > :31:57.season, I wouldn't have believed it. But it is added pressure, but you
:31:57. > :32:02.want more, you want more pressure. This Lotus is flying in the hands
:32:02. > :32:06.of the young French driver. Up into third, a brilliant start,
:32:06. > :32:16.aggressive start and Romain Grosjean then sent off. Bravo, that
:32:16. > :32:21.was great driving. They came through from Formula
:32:21. > :32:27.Three, and I always compare him in the past two Lewis, they have a
:32:27. > :32:32.similar past. That is why it was a bit of a shame for me that the
:32:32. > :32:34.first time he raced in Formula One, it didn't work. Has he come in too
:32:34. > :32:38.soon or does he not have the talent?
:32:38. > :32:44.I thought that would be my only chance at Formula One. At this
:32:44. > :32:49.stage, I thought it was over for the future. But now I really want
:32:50. > :32:53.to stay here as long as possible and make everything good. But it
:32:53. > :32:58.was difficult, it was just the wrong time and the wrong place and
:32:58. > :33:05.I wasn't as ready as I am today. And how different is the team from
:33:06. > :33:10.the then to now? If you speak in terms of people around, 80% at are
:33:10. > :33:14.still the same, but the rest is completely different and we are all
:33:14. > :33:19.working hard together to try and get the best out of the car. Nobody
:33:19. > :33:25.is blaming anybody for anything, it is supporting each other strongly
:33:26. > :33:30.and that is nice. The atmosphere is nice, people are trusting
:33:30. > :33:37.themselves and believe in the project. They just need to bring
:33:37. > :33:42.them the confidence and belief -- bring back. Sebastian Grosjean --
:33:42. > :33:47.Romain Grosjean is on the dirty side, nothing Hamilton can do it.
:33:47. > :33:54.It is nice to be battling with the big names like Red Bull and McLaren,
:33:54. > :33:58.but I think last year we had two podiums across all of the races and
:33:58. > :34:08.this year, it looks like it is the same story. Obviously, we learn
:34:08. > :34:11.
:34:12. > :34:17.from our mistakes and we have a inside the Lotus garage, around 50
:34:17. > :34:23.minutes before qualifying. David, what has the signing of Kimi
:34:23. > :34:27.Raikkonen done for this team? has had it -- it has added a level
:34:27. > :34:32.of credibility. Some people were spec -- sceptical after a couple of
:34:32. > :34:36.years away but he is only 32 years old, clearly motivated and it has
:34:36. > :34:41.taken the whole team forward. He knows what it was like to work
:34:41. > :34:44.within a world championship team, you don't forget that, and of
:34:44. > :34:49.course, Lotus, former world champions in the Renault and
:34:49. > :34:51.champions in the Renault and Benetton years. David has already
:34:51. > :34:55.driven and shared a team with Kimi Raikkonen, you will know how much
:34:55. > :35:00.he will be pushing the development freight, because that is where they
:35:00. > :35:03.have struggled. The key thing is they understand how have to get the
:35:03. > :35:08.best out of Kimi Raikkonen, which is to let him be himself. He is
:35:08. > :35:11.very focused on getting the car working well. We shouldn't be
:35:11. > :35:14.mistaken by his laid-back attitude when it comes to press conferences,
:35:14. > :35:18.he is very clear in terms of describing what he needs from the
:35:18. > :35:24.car and working with the engineer. He is back with Mark Slade, he
:35:24. > :35:30.worked with at McLaren. Would you have employed him? You couldn't not
:35:30. > :35:33.employed him. He is an outstanding driver. Some people issue --
:35:33. > :35:37.highlight issues but I don't see them, I am looking for a driver who
:35:37. > :35:42.can get the maximum to the team and he does that. Look what Michael
:35:42. > :35:48.Schumacher has that at Mercedes and compare that to just after a race
:35:48. > :35:53.four, this chap should have won in Bahrain. It was a fantastic drive.
:35:53. > :35:56.And it hasn't gone unnoticed, he is pushing this team along and I dare
:35:56. > :36:01.say that Romain Grosjean is benefiting. That team looks at ease
:36:01. > :36:04.with itself and they have the pace. And a frustrating morning for
:36:04. > :36:09.Romain Grosjean, final practice is so essential to get the car set up
:36:10. > :36:13.and he had any issue with his your pressure. And it was game over.
:36:13. > :36:18.They got the car back and they shouldn't be an issue with getting
:36:18. > :36:23.it back for the first part of qualifying. -- there should end. I
:36:23. > :36:28.think he has got confidence, he has got experience of this race track,
:36:28. > :36:32.so it won't hold him back to much. In some ways, it is the perfect
:36:32. > :36:36.partnership, because Kimi Raikkonen wants to turn up and drive and
:36:36. > :36:38.Romain Grosjean will do every interview going with a big smile on
:36:38. > :36:48.his face under do the things that Raikkonen doesn't want to do, such
:36:48. > :36:51.as every day testing. It is working, that is the secret. Well done to
:36:51. > :36:56.Lotus for picking these drivers. I don't think I would have been able
:36:56. > :37:00.to do that and I don't think many people gave... Certainly the book
:37:00. > :37:05.is didn't have money on this team to do as well -- the bookies. It is
:37:05. > :37:11.in keeping with the way Formula One is at the moment, unpredictable
:37:11. > :37:13.exciting and huge drama. An even stranger couple that David
:37:13. > :37:17.Coulthard and Eddie Jordan. Kimi Raikkonen has won here twice in the
:37:17. > :37:21.past but that doesn't mean he knows this track better than anyone else
:37:21. > :37:24.because surely local lad Pedro de la Rosa is the one who knows it
:37:24. > :37:34.better than anyone else, having done thousands of testing miles
:37:34. > :37:38.
:37:38. > :37:44.around here. He is a man who David I am here with the legend that is
:37:44. > :37:48.Pedro de la Rosa. Home turf, so to speak. We are in the heart of turn
:37:48. > :37:54.two and one of the most important sections of the track. It is, it is
:37:54. > :37:58.virtually flat, especially where we are right now. The question is, if
:37:58. > :38:03.you are flat, how much tarmac do you need on your right, because it
:38:03. > :38:07.will compromise your speed, so it is a balancing act. You have done
:38:07. > :38:14.thousands of miles around here when you were testing for McLaren. How
:38:14. > :38:20.different is it when you are in a small team like HRT, can you be the
:38:20. > :38:25.same in that car? It is going to be a complete slide going in and going
:38:25. > :38:30.out and turn four, you have no tyres left! The this is going to be
:38:30. > :38:37.frightening in qualifying. It is. It is going to be frightening.
:38:37. > :38:43.This corner, turn three, it is one of those where after a few laps,
:38:43. > :38:52.you just let your head lean on the head rest and relax for a bit.
:38:52. > :39:02.of the Formula One drivers have very large next. -- next. You're
:39:02. > :39:03.
:39:03. > :39:11.not a spring chicken, you are 41 years old,... And you, but I must
:39:11. > :39:16.say, you still have a very big chin. Thanks for that.
:39:16. > :39:22.We have come from turn three and we have stopped at turn at 10 a, way
:39:22. > :39:28.you approach at 290 and shed as much speed as possible. This is
:39:28. > :39:31.where you will start to smile in that HRT? Absolutely, it is one of
:39:31. > :39:36.the most difficult corners. In qualifying, you always hesitate,
:39:36. > :39:42.should I go for the last five metres but you have to balance what
:39:42. > :39:47.you can take the risk with or not. If you look at the rear, you go
:39:47. > :39:55.wide and it is over. Bath lock. This is also the place where a lot
:39:55. > :40:00.of overtaking takes place. Yes, I can dream about overtaking Fernando
:40:00. > :40:03.in the Ferrari. Bay Grandstand will be full of Spanish fans. You have
:40:04. > :40:08.been competing in Formula One for many years, so it must be a special
:40:08. > :40:12.feeling to see all of the Spanish fans. It is very special and we
:40:12. > :40:16.should be realistic, they are here for Fernando, but they also support
:40:16. > :40:21.Spanish teams, they also support me and this is where you feel whether
:40:21. > :40:27.people are. This is where the atmosphere is and it is fantastic -
:40:27. > :40:31.- where the people are. This is the last section of 13, 14, 15. It is
:40:32. > :40:35.one of those corners where you can lose a lot of time. You have to
:40:36. > :40:40.feel where the wind is blowing because it is always understeering.
:40:40. > :40:46.You just have to be sure that the car has a good balance, forget
:40:46. > :40:52.about high-speed in this area. This is the last chicane, through
:40:52. > :40:55.the last corner, which is taken absolutely flat. Driving on to the
:40:55. > :41:02.straight in front of the Spanish fans driving for a Spanish team as
:41:02. > :41:05.a Spaniard. It will be incredible. Yes. Is something else coming?
:41:05. > :41:10.know me too well. Unite -- you might not have the car, but she
:41:10. > :41:17.will always have your looks. Have a good weekend. Thank you.
:41:17. > :41:21.He says there is no love in Formula One? This is HRT, automatic doors
:41:21. > :41:25.and everything. This is what happens before qualifying, mainly
:41:25. > :41:29.people sitting around eating food and having a coffee. I think we
:41:29. > :41:33.would get in trouble because we haven't asked pay it -- permission
:41:33. > :41:38.to interview them. They have this beautiful chrome motor home and as
:41:38. > :41:41.you come out, this is where they do all of the interviews with the
:41:41. > :41:44.drivers and it looks fantastic. They have got everything you would
:41:44. > :41:49.want from a Formula One team but they are doing it with a limited
:41:49. > :41:52.crew. You keep saying that and we keep trying to make excuses as to
:41:52. > :41:58.why these teams at the back are just are not having the kind of
:41:58. > :42:06.success that we would hope they would have. HRT have 75 people. You
:42:06. > :42:09.ask Gary Anderson, when Jordan started, it was 28. The reality is,
:42:09. > :42:14.they have to... I don't care how many people they have got, they
:42:14. > :42:21.have to perform on the track, whether it is 75 or 750 people.
:42:21. > :42:25.they added have 10% of the fastest teams, Ferrari and Red Bull are
:42:25. > :42:30.operating 600 or 700 people. they all have the same ability to
:42:30. > :42:33.attract the income from various places. You have the luck that the
:42:33. > :42:38.marketing department, are they doing a good enough job? -- you
:42:38. > :42:42.have to look at. The excuses stop on Sunday when the first car goes
:42:42. > :42:48.over the line. The dead get the money until you get the speed and
:42:48. > :42:52.vice versa, -- you don't get the money. No such trouble at Red Bull,
:42:52. > :43:00.they have a ready supply of cash from a certain fizzy drink.
:43:00. > :43:04.Christian Horner is with Lee. you have any more of her -- an idea
:43:04. > :43:10.way you are ahead of other teams going into this qualifying session?
:43:10. > :43:15.Not really, it is tied. They could be eight or nine drivers are vying
:43:15. > :43:23.for pole position -- it is tight. You have to look strategically for
:43:23. > :43:28.tomorrow's rays. It is going to be interesting, it will be a
:43:28. > :43:33.fascinating qualifying. Mark Webber has a fantastic record at this
:43:33. > :43:38.circuit, he must be confident. has got a cold at the moment but he

:46:44. > :46:48.here. I think we are. Track temperature 41 degrees and that is

:50:38. > :50:41.Sunday night so not sure those wet tyres are going to be needed --
:50:41. > :50:45.needed. So Romain Grosjean hoping to put behind him a difficult

:51:27. > :51:32.is a mix. If you get both tyres working correctly, the souft tyres

:51:47. > :51:51.interesting thing on the first lap. The 17th will be round about a 24-2,

:51:55. > :52:01.harder tyre you will have to have a second go on the softer tyre.
:52:02. > :52:05.Nobody has come ourt to play yet. We saw Rosberg. The big challenge
:52:05. > :52:09.for the drivers is the last time they have been out on track in the
:52:09. > :52:13.morning practise session from 11-12 you had a certain track subpoena
:52:13. > :52:16.and wind speed. A lot of the corners here turn nine, turn three
:52:16. > :52:21.at the end of the lap are affected by the wind, so the drivers on that
:52:21. > :52:24.one flying lap on the new tyres is a leap of faith. Is the car going
:52:25. > :52:28.to react the same when I commit it to the corner? If you go
:52:28. > :52:32.Conservative and find out you could have given it more speed, the tyres
:52:32. > :52:39.are being used up. If you go at it like the morning when the track was

:52:46. > :52:51.the camera, having had a visit up to the stewards earlier to explain
:52:51. > :52:55.him cutting the corner in front of Lewis Hamilton, yes, so for
:52:55. > :53:00.everyone going out in this session now, it is a big, a first sighter

:53:14. > :53:18.was all the way back in 1995 and a 1-2 with Johnny Herbert. His first
:53:18. > :53:21.Ferrari win was in 1996. Chelsea football club now involved with
:53:21. > :53:25.Sauber, that is new for this weekend you. Will see the stickers
:53:25. > :53:32.on the car. As we have seen Kobayashi and Perez have been been
:53:32. > :53:36.able to deliver some surprises, that second place for Perez in mace
:53:36. > :53:42.away. Perez got his first point 12 months ago so he will be happy
:53:42. > :53:47.going into qualifying. He has made it into Q3 in every event this year.
:53:47. > :53:52.Just there David looking at the revised nose on the McLaren. They
:53:52. > :53:58.did and spend much time looking at it. There have been parts added
:53:58. > :54:02.since the last Grand Prix. They have gone for a slightly different
:54:02. > :54:09.nose configuration, a higher nose, that is more in line with what the
:54:09. > :54:18.majority of the cars are running of course, but a bit more elegant look
:54:18. > :54:24.tong McLaren. Paul has -- he went for two stops as most went for the

:54:56. > :55:00.that affect things. You are going through a minimum speed of 160mph.
:55:00. > :55:06.So you can imagine the scenery is passing quickly. If you have got a
:55:06. > :55:10.tail wend up the back of cars you lose a bit of rear down force, and
:55:10. > :55:14.you have this sensation of having a lot more front grip. If you have a

:57:04. > :57:08.will be on the radio to his team, complaining of the traffic. Yes,
:57:08. > :57:11.that was unfortunate. Take a look at the replay. That was turn nine
:57:11. > :57:16.where he went right over the edge. He has all four wheels over the
:57:16. > :57:20.white line on that lap. Then as you said he has traction difficulty,
:57:20. > :57:25.then he got traffic as well, the Marussia, onboard with Fernando
:57:25. > :57:31.Alonso. That threw seven and eight. He is coming up to the nine where
:57:31. > :57:35.the tail wind seems to affect things. He comes out, not as wide
:57:36. > :57:40.as Paul di Resta. Heavy breaking into turn ten you. See the rear
:57:40. > :57:46.wing flap dropping into place T drag reduction system used on all
:57:46. > :57:52.of the straights in qualifying, not just the start finish straight. Now

:58:35. > :58:39.main task of Q1 is to get into the top 17, and then you make it
:58:39. > :58:46.through to the second part of qualifying. Kimi gos into third now,
:58:46. > :58:49.as Perez goes fastest, that is a good lap by Oscar Pereiro, now we
:58:49. > :58:54.are onboard with Lewis Hamilton. What will he do with his first real

:58:58. > :59:02.not the purpose colour that would indicate fastest of all. He goes
:59:02. > :59:07.slightly quicker of Perez, 1.24.1. He managed to find time in that
:59:07. > :59:12.last sector and we get purposing on the timing screens which says he is
:59:12. > :59:16.the fastest man of all in that last sector. That is a good sign for
:59:16. > :59:20.this weekend, it's a good indication for the next Grand Prix

:59:31. > :59:35.result. Wind has picked up. It is more of a tail wind from eight and
:59:35. > :59:38.nine. So again more information on that wind direction, and speed for

:00:35. > :00:42.
:00:42. > :00:47.to the end of his first attempt. It team mate. A fair bit slower.

:00:52. > :00:57.17 go through, but anybody below that this out of qualifying for the
:00:57. > :01:05.rest of today. At the moment, we haven't seen anybody come out of

:01:08. > :01:14.Rosberg on a slightly better lap but the middle sector are not
:01:14. > :01:20.looking so good. Hops over the kerb a little bit. They do use that kerb
:01:20. > :01:24.on the left. It depends on the team, as to how your car react. The
:01:24. > :01:30.Mercedes has got a little bit more compliance in the car. I think the

:06:21. > :06:26.that is what they are doing, keeping their hard tyres new for
:06:26. > :06:30.the race itself. It is not looking like a great lap for Sebastian

:10:50. > :10:56.the moment, not enough to make it. I think he might be the first
:10:56. > :11:02.disappointed. He has lasted, Bruno Senna is off, trying just that bit
:11:02. > :11:06.too hard -- he has lost it. And after his team-mate has set the
:11:06. > :11:13.fifth fastest time, Bruno Senna will be disappointed to not even
:11:13. > :11:17.make it into Q2. He would have glanced down at his lap time after
:11:17. > :11:22.Turn 10 and knew he was not on a better lap. Frustration has got the
:11:22. > :11:28.better of him. We saw Lewis Hamilton as the rear end slightly
:11:28. > :11:34.as he ran into turn at 12 and this situation, Bruno Senna not able to

:11:57. > :12:01.and you just don't have the same level of grip -- brake. The only
:12:01. > :12:06.good thing he's he has got plenty of tyres left for tomorrow -- only
:12:06. > :12:10.good thing is. At least in the current way of working, having lots

:12:26. > :12:28.
:12:28. > :12:33.walk of shame. Let's just confirm then knocked out cars. Bruno Senna,
:12:33. > :12:37.Vitaly Petrov, Kovalainen. Vitaly Petrov faster for the first time
:12:37. > :12:44.this year than Kovalainen. Charles Pic again beating his experienced
:12:44. > :12:49.team mate and also out, the two HRTs of Pedro de la Rosa Are and
:12:49. > :12:53.Karthikeyan. A JAKE HUMPHREY: That is quite good
:12:53. > :12:58.for Charles Pic, impressive pace. EDDIE JORDAN: We have seen Timo
:12:58. > :13:01.Glock finish second in Singapore some years ago, and he has
:13:01. > :13:07.experienced, so Charles Pick has done an amazing job against him.
:13:07. > :13:10.That is Petrov making his way back into the pit lane. The last few
:13:11. > :13:15.races have all been about saving those soft tyres for the race, but
:13:15. > :13:19.here it looks like a hard tyres is so much better you may as well used
:13:19. > :13:24.the soft in qualifying. Gary pointed out early on in the
:13:24. > :13:30.commentary, the guys who have run the soft tyre have sacrificed a set
:13:30. > :13:34.of the hard tyre, they shouldn't have gone out. That is why when
:13:34. > :13:40.Gary was running strategy at Jordan, he got it right so often. They have
:13:40. > :13:43.wasted tyres. This year, Heikki Kovalainen made it out of the first
:13:43. > :13:47.part of qualifying, not this year. Bruno Senna is in the middle of the
:13:47. > :13:52.midfield battle and will have to start way down the grid after this
:13:52. > :13:57.moment. David think -- thinks he looked at his lap delta, pushing
:13:57. > :14:03.too hard. He has been completely out shone by Pastor Maldonado at
:14:03. > :14:08.this stage, and it won't be happy viewing for Frank, celebrating his
:14:08. > :14:13.70th birthday. This is grim for him. We know how good said that can be,
:14:13. > :14:17.we have seen him race very strong in the early races -- we know how
:14:17. > :14:22.good a Bruno Senna can be. Let's join David Coulthard and then
:14:22. > :14:28.Edwards. I suppose what she would say about Bruno Senna is he has
:14:29. > :14:33.raced well at this season -- what you would say? The s, he is a good
:14:33. > :14:38.racer, there is no doubt about it - - yes. He loves this track, he
:14:38. > :14:42.knows it well and I think he felt he would qualify well. Yes, I think
:14:42. > :14:47.at that stage, frustration got the better of him, because she will not
:14:47. > :14:53.see many cars running on to the kerb at the entry to turn 12 -- you
:14:53. > :14:56.will not see. The amount of power you can get between 11 and 12 is
:14:56. > :15:00.margin also an uncharacteristic mistake and the frustration,
:15:00. > :15:04.especially when your team-mate is doing well, and we saw the image of
:15:04. > :15:07.the reserve driver, the emotion he goes through, because he is
:15:07. > :15:12.disappointed for the team but the joy for himself because he may be
:15:12. > :15:16.one step closer to making a Grand Prix debut. I have heard a rumour
:15:16. > :15:19.you wear sunglasses indoors, I am glad that is not the case. Let's
:15:19. > :15:29.have a look at Maldonado, he has been out shocked by this guy this
:15:29. > :15:33.
:15:33. > :15:38.weekend. Second fastest in free that car hooked u on the front axle,
:15:38. > :15:42.nightly, so he is fighting oversteer as he rolls the car into
:15:42. > :15:47.turn four. Breathes a sigh of relief as you open the power and
:15:47. > :15:51.over the bumps, down into the hairpin which is turn five. Speed
:15:51. > :15:56.of about 75mph. Ignore turn six as you get your braking right into
:15:56. > :16:00.seven. Again, you can see him having to make lots of small
:16:00. > :16:05.corrections and this car clearly is et up on the front axle, which is
:16:05. > :16:08.giving him this good performance, the only tool he have available
:16:08. > :16:12.going into the race to reduce the sensitivity is taking out front
:16:12. > :16:18.wing and a bit of pressure. Misses the apex at turn ten. Let us see
:16:18. > :16:23.the contrasting sty as he goes into 12. Doesn't touch the kerk at all
:16:23. > :16:27.on the right hand side. Then just has to be tidy through this last
:16:27. > :16:32.section. Let us see if he touches any of the curb. A large amount of
:16:32. > :16:36.curb from ta Williams. Turn 146789 then a run for the line. Of course
:16:36. > :16:45.he will look down and see his lap delta. He will have a smile on his
:16:45. > :16:48.face already. A good qualifying lap. Frustrating for Frank Williams.
:16:48. > :16:52.Frank is here it should be a momentous occasion for him, and
:16:52. > :17:00.that is something he will not want to have seen, he has had great
:17:00. > :17:04.divers in the past this is getting underway and slightly
:17:04. > :17:10.shorter segment of qualifying. Qment 2. The aim is to get into the
:17:10. > :17:16.top ten now. It gets tough. As we have seen it is easy to make a
:17:16. > :17:21.mistake. Bruno Senna is out of this part of qualifying. We have lost
:17:21. > :17:26.the Caterhams but now we get into that tight midfield battle with the
:17:26. > :17:30.teams are close together. Teams leek Force India, Sauber, then we
:17:31. > :17:35.move up to Mercedes and Lotus then McLaren here, and of course, Red
:17:35. > :17:39.Bull, and we still know there could be surprises throughout the course
:17:39. > :17:47.of this. Gary, your thoughts one again going now into this second
:17:47. > :17:51.part of qualifying. What do they do with tyre choice, you have to go
:17:51. > :17:55.for the soft tyre? I am sure most will go out with that used tyre,
:17:55. > :18:00.they will know from is a couple of turns slower on the best lap
:18:00. > :18:05.because it is used now. It will get their eye in. They will adjust the
:18:05. > :18:11.front wing, so they will get their eye in with a new set of tire tyre,
:18:11. > :18:14.when you saw Sebastian Vettel, he didn't really push hard with his.
:18:14. > :18:20.He was saving that tyre to be better for this sition session. The
:18:20. > :18:28.second run will be on new tyres that is where we will see who can
:18:28. > :18:32.make it. I was going to ask you, both Red Bulls were more than a
:18:32. > :18:36.second away than the time set by Hamilton. You think that is a
:18:36. > :18:41.strategy, a risky strategy nonetheless, to drive under the
:18:41. > :18:46.tire in qualifying because you could put yourself dropping out.
:18:46. > :18:50.There is work for them. They know the pressure on them. It is easy to
:18:50. > :18:54.abuse the tyres and when you goat the last section, the soft tyres
:18:54. > :18:58.finish, it gives up. I think they were being conservative in that
:18:58. > :19:01.first run, making shoe they knew what they needed to do there was
:19:01. > :19:04.probably another half a second in there easily enough to find for
:19:04. > :19:07.them, but you want to save the tyre for this session. You want to make
:19:07. > :19:13.adjustment on the car. I think they have been clever here. Saving that
:19:13. > :19:17.hard set of tyres, that is a good thing to do. World Champion team
:19:17. > :19:23.for the last couple of year, plenty of good reasons for that. It is not
:19:23. > :19:27.just down to the driving strength they have with Vettel and Webber.
:19:27. > :19:32.Massa is safely through to this segment of qualifying. Will he make
:19:33. > :19:39.it through to the final segment? That is the question question. We
:19:39. > :19:42.are beginning to hear engine firing up as the fans get ready to cheer
:19:42. > :19:48.their favourite. Looking down on the information we get on the
:19:48. > :19:54.circuit map here. It suggests that Sauber, it suggests they were on
:19:54. > :20:04.primes. If that is the case, then they are in the hunt for pole
:20:04. > :20:04.
:20:04. > :20:11.position. Kobayashi did a 33.33 which is slower than Hamilton.
:20:11. > :20:16.is a difficult conversation going on there. Yeah, a few cars out on
:20:16. > :20:21.circuit. Force India's are first out. Sergio Perez for Sauber and
:20:21. > :20:27.Kobayashi out on track. So let us get an idea of how these guys are
:20:27. > :20:32.going to get on. Force India in that midfield battle and Paul,
:20:32. > :20:38.after that intel comment sixth place wants to back it up.
:20:38. > :20:43.Hulkenberg has had poor luck so far. Had a great grid position in
:20:43. > :20:47.Australia. Since then the best he has achieved is 13th place in
:20:47. > :20:54.Bahrain. He was only frabg shuns off but that is the difference it
:20:54. > :20:58.makes, you are talking thousands of a second between them. I love this
:20:58. > :21:06.camera angle. That is the front edge of the carbon floor you are
:21:06. > :21:10.seeing. Below that the plank. The wooden plank will start, so it high
:21:10. > :21:15.lights how long Lowe they run. You have drivers bottom just above that
:21:15. > :21:23.and his seat. So that is why you feel the car when you are out on
:21:23. > :21:27.track. If you hit a curb that,, that going ult through your spine.
:21:27. > :21:35.Kobayashi end down this long finish straight. Heavy on the turns one
:21:35. > :21:39.and two past the grand stands. Some spectacular places to watch the
:21:39. > :21:47.cars in action. That long right- hander that seems to go on forever.
:21:47. > :21:52.So hard on the tyres and the driver's neck. That is the only
:21:52. > :21:56.benefit in having much slower race pace, when you have all that fuel
:21:56. > :22:03.onboard is a much slower lap time takes away some of the energy from
:22:03. > :22:09.the neck this is one of the fiscal things the drivers face. Looking at
:22:09. > :22:16.Kobayashi's opening sector, he is neck and neck for faster in that
:22:16. > :22:20.sector was Hulkenberg and Force India. Not a great opener as he
:22:20. > :22:25.goes ento turn ten. He is an aggressive style of driver
:22:25. > :22:30.Kobayashi. He got a tenth place on the grid back in 2010 and finished
:22:30. > :22:36.tenth in fact last year. Best position this year was that super
:22:36. > :22:40.third place in China. That was one we hadn't expected: Sauber have
:22:40. > :22:50.shown they have a stunning qualifying pace when they get
:22:50. > :22:50.
:22:50. > :22:58.things right. His tame is 1.24 .0 so not as quick as the first. So
:22:58. > :23:03.Kobayashi might have expected more. This was the lock up. That becomes
:23:03. > :23:09.unloaded. He does a good job of creating his own ABS, I don't think
:23:09. > :23:16.that will have caused him too much time. He runs into this last sector.
:23:16. > :23:20.Oh, big bounce over the kerb. He really attacks the kerb on last one.
:23:20. > :23:27.Ret us see what time it is going to be for Rosberg as he completes the
:23:27. > :23:37.lap. He goes fastest. That is more like the pace we saw in that
:23:37. > :23:38.
:23:38. > :23:43.segment of qualifying. So butt on the does a 23 .3 to go faster.
:23:43. > :23:51.Button, Rosberg and Perez. Although Hamilton snatches it away from
:23:51. > :23:57.everyone, with a lap miles quicker than anyone else. Snatch is too
:23:57. > :24:04.subtle for ho much faster he has gone. He grabbed it out of his
:24:04. > :24:13.team-mate so nine tenths quicker. We will see a replay of Nico
:24:13. > :24:20.Rosberg heading that huge red baguette of it. He allows the
:24:20. > :24:23.drivers to ride the kerb. Webber goes second and Vettel sixth. So
:24:23. > :24:33.Sebastian looks like he is continuing on another lap, but he
:24:33. > :24:42.
:24:42. > :24:45.has already done that 1.23.4. braking. OK Jenson, the yellow G7.
:24:45. > :24:49.What was interesting about that, we heard him in the morning practise
:24:49. > :24:52.session talking about problems with the rear, then we heard him talking
:24:52. > :24:56.about understeer, now he is talking about problems with the rears, so
:24:56. > :25:03.you can see the difficulty, the driver and the engineer has with
:25:03. > :25:12.trying to balance the car on any given lap. Of course, the tyres
:25:12. > :25:19.have evolved. The track is evolved. It works all day long. The 1.23. 8
:25:19. > :25:24.for Pastor Maldonado. Not as quick as he might have hoped. Vettel
:25:24. > :25:34.backed off. Hamilton brings his car back into the pit. Six-and-a-half
:25:34. > :25:39.minutes remaining. The battle is to be in the top ten. At the moment
:25:39. > :25:44.several have not been out yet. Kimi Raikkonen joins the circuit.
:25:44. > :25:47.think Lewis Hamilton might find himself not having to run again he
:25:47. > :25:53.has half a second advantage to Mark Webber. If you look down to even
:25:53. > :25:58.else, they will have to go again pretty much. We thought they would
:25:58. > :26:01.go out on a used set of option, do you think that is what people have
:26:02. > :26:08.done? It is difficult looking at the pit lane. I would have said
:26:08. > :26:14.Lewis was on the used set as was most cars. The big question mark
:26:14. > :26:19.would be Rosberg and button. Both Lotus have gone out. They look as
:26:19. > :26:24.if they are on used tires. They must have confidence there is
:26:24. > :26:29.another lap on the tievers to do that. I think that answers his
:26:29. > :26:33.question. He either has a car problem or he is comable his time
:26:33. > :26:39.won't be beaten. He has wandered off to powder his nose. I think he
:26:39. > :26:43.has gone just over a tenth faster than he did in the previous, so he
:26:43. > :26:48.either did a Conservative lap on his first set of new options or
:26:48. > :26:53.that was a new set of tyre, it is difficult to imagine he could beat
:26:53. > :27:00.the time with those extra laps on them. I agree. Where I am in the
:27:00. > :27:05.pit lane, it is difficult to see the tread of the tyre. But the, in
:27:05. > :27:12.the balance change on the car when he did a 22.5 was enough to give
:27:12. > :27:16.them that extra bite. That is all it takes as well. Make it work for
:27:17. > :27:21.you. Kimi Raikkonen going on to his lap. Let us see where this puts him.
:27:21. > :27:28.Through turns wund and two and then just trying to keep the flow going.
:27:28. > :27:33.He goes in narrowly to turn three. Then tries not the let the car run
:27:33. > :27:37.too wide. Rimy a double winner on this circuit in the past. Both for
:27:37. > :27:42.McLaren and Ferrari. Trying to back up that wonderful race result of
:27:42. > :27:46.second place in Bahrain a few weeks ago, as he challenges Vettel for
:27:46. > :27:53.the victory. Hamilton is getting back in the car. So whether,
:27:53. > :28:01.whether they are still expecting approval it is a megalap. It is a
:28:01. > :28:07.great lap from grow gene Raikkonen. Raikkonen is a tenth of a second
:28:07. > :28:11.slower than him. Second sector perhaps not quite so quick, but
:28:11. > :28:16.still mot far off Hamilton's time at the moment. Let us see what the
:28:17. > :28:21.final sector looks like. It looked like he struggled for traction and
:28:21. > :28:26.a lot more tentative. We have seen from previous Grand Prixs this
:28:26. > :28:32.Lotus car has very good high speed eperformance, no big surprise they
:28:32. > :28:38.are quick in the first sector. See how much he struggles in the last
:28:39. > :28:44.part. Crucially he is about three tenth slower than Hamilton.. Let us
:28:44. > :28:48.see what gross gene does, he is on a good lap. Hamilton is faster from
:28:48. > :28:58.Raikkonen. Is grow gene going to fill that gap? He does, he splits
:28:58. > :29:02.the difference with a 22.6. It is Hamilton. The two Lotus drivers are
:29:02. > :29:06.rooking very competitive once again here. Sebastian Vettel now coming
:29:06. > :29:09.out on the circuit. Kobayashi is coming out on track. So is Nico
:29:09. > :29:16.Hulkenberg in the Force India behind. Jenson Button is out too
:29:16. > :29:20.and you are looking at a replace of Romain Grosjean, just a minor lock
:29:20. > :29:26.up. A good lap that from Romain Grosjean who is currently second
:29:26. > :29:32.fastest and should be safe in the top ten. He He has looked more
:29:32. > :29:34.settled. That is reflcted in the lab time. It is good to have a
:29:34. > :29:41.double whammy. If you have stability and confidence in the
:29:41. > :29:47.rear of your car, we expect a lot of rear degree investigation, so
:29:47. > :29:52.gross might be the want to watch. Can maska get into the top ten for
:29:52. > :29:56.the first time this year? That was a late down change, he does seem to
:29:56. > :30:01.be throwing everything into this attempt. Two minutes to go in the
:30:01. > :30:06.second Pacific Ocean of qualifying. He is faster than the current tenth
:30:06. > :30:12.by a fraction, this is not going to be a imagine ib lap from mas sa, he
:30:12. > :30:16.is struggling here. Very wide in st. Look at the massive amount of
:30:16. > :30:22.steering lock as he goes through 136789 again in 14 be know this
:30:22. > :30:27.Ferrari runs a very slow steering rack, he separating and runs for
:30:27. > :30:37.the line. Let us see what is it? That is tenth. That surely is not
:30:37. > :30:42.
:30:42. > :30:48.his current 12 but will he be saved in the top 10? Ferrari desperate
:30:48. > :30:51.for improvement. He goes into fourth, that is an improvement.
:30:51. > :30:55.Here comes Paul di Resta, he qualified in tenth last time and he
:30:55. > :31:00.has gone up to sixth, so he should be safely through to the second
:31:00. > :31:04.part of qualifying. Vettel is only 11th at the moment so he needs to
:31:04. > :31:09.do something to make sure he gets in the top 10 and that would push
:31:09. > :31:15.Daniel Ricciardo out. Trying to see in his lap delta, the bottom right
:31:15. > :31:20.of the screen, how much faster he is. Two-tenths within, so not a
:31:20. > :31:24.sterling lap from the Red Bull. Hesitant as he gets through 12,
:31:25. > :31:34.another wide line like Ferrari. should be enough, he is to tense up
:31:34. > :31:42.on what he needs to do to get into the top 10 -- two-tenths. Webber
:31:42. > :31:48.currently fifth, are Vettel around the same. 1: 22.8, so the two team
:31:48. > :31:58.mate very evenly matched. Nico Hulkenberg trying to improve on his
:31:58. > :32:03.time. Can he gets himself up there? Up to eighth. Jenson Button has
:32:04. > :32:09.improved. He didn't actually go getter -- better than the first
:32:09. > :32:15.sector, he actually pulled the time back. So the Sauber car performing
:32:15. > :32:21.well. On board with Sergio Perez. Nico Rosberg is currently out of it
:32:21. > :32:25.and so is Michael Schumacher, currently. Sergio Perez is 16th
:32:25. > :32:32.currently, let's see where this puts him. And he goes third.
:32:32. > :32:38.Nico Rosberg has to personal bests coming up. He is down in 13. And up
:32:38. > :32:43.into sixth. Is Michael going to be saved? Ninth. And Michael -- Mark
:32:43. > :32:50.Webber only 11th hour, he is in trouble. Jenson Button pushed down
:32:50. > :32:53.as well, he has been pushed out, he is 11th and Mark Webber is 12. And
:32:53. > :32:59.the double pole we now from Barcelona, Mark Webber, is not
:32:59. > :33:04.going to be in the top 10 -- winner. And neither is Jenson Button. What
:33:04. > :33:10.a shock. Webber still in the pits, they are not going to send him back
:33:10. > :33:16.out. This is incredible, Kimi Raikkonen in fifth place. And
:33:16. > :33:23.Maldonado, in all of the excitement, went fastest in that session. The
:33:23. > :33:33.difference between fifth and 12 is one-tenth. It is so close. TEAM
:33:33. > :33:39.
:33:39. > :33:46.RADIO: It is the understeer again. to the other. That poor. Maldonado,
:33:47. > :33:50.leading. And Felipe Massa, he is 17th. Only 17. And he has still
:33:50. > :34:00.failed to get into the top 10, so for all of the improvement Ferrari
:34:00. > :34:00.
:34:00. > :34:06.have made bad but that that is Kobayashi, ninth place. Walking
:34:06. > :34:12.away from his car. He will line up intent. Jenson Button is out, Mark
:34:12. > :34:17.Webber is out, so are the Force India drivers Paul di Resta and
:34:17. > :34:23.Hulkenberg, and the Toro Rossos. That was Kobayashi pulling off to
:34:23. > :34:27.the side of the road. JAKE HUMPHREY: Such frustration for
:34:27. > :34:31.Kobayashi because they are looking so fast that the moment. Those
:34:31. > :34:36.double, Jenson Button complaints about understeer one minute,
:34:36. > :34:41.oversteer the next. We can see it are locking up and he is out of a
:34:41. > :34:45.second part of qualifying. -- be can see it locking up. There have
:34:45. > :34:49.been a lot of surprises, and this is a big shock for Jenson Button,
:34:49. > :34:55.because he could have been the winner. Not to say he won't become
:34:55. > :34:59.tomorrow but it is a disappointing qualifying. We heard him say "Work
:34:59. > :35:03.that one out", clearly he is struggling to work out what the car
:35:03. > :35:08.is doing. And he is such a good driver at setting up a car for a
:35:08. > :35:14.Grand Prix. He is clearly not happy, that is a little swipe at the team
:35:14. > :35:18.are asking what is going on, because he can't work it out.
:35:18. > :35:21.if you are wondering what he is staring at, everywhere they go,
:35:21. > :35:27.there are timing screens and there was a rather surly looking Jenson
:35:27. > :35:32.Button wondering exactly what went wrong. As Paul Williams, it is
:35:32. > :35:36.Frank's 70th birthday this weekend -- as the Williams. They have some
:35:36. > :35:41.things this by the bad but not Bruno Senna. This is him sliding
:35:41. > :35:47.off in the second part of qualifying. This is why it happened,
:35:47. > :35:53.Bruno Senna is with Lee McKenzie. I know you will be disappointed,
:35:53. > :35:58.tell us what happened. Very frustrated. A I was just in the
:35:58. > :36:07.wrong place at the wrong time on my first flying lap with the softer
:36:07. > :36:14.tyres. I was behind Felipe Massa or, just the wrong place at the wrong
:36:14. > :36:19.time. I was too close to actually get a proper lap and I struggled.
:36:19. > :36:24.The second flying lap was nowhere, so not enough. Was it because you
:36:24. > :36:30.were under pressure and pushing that used by him? I pushed a bit
:36:30. > :36:34.hard, I tried to make the most of it. But when I got to the last part,
:36:34. > :36:37.the rear tyres gave up and it was too much.
:36:37. > :36:42.Body language experts will have a field day because it is rare for
:36:42. > :36:47.him to keep sunglasses on when he is interviewed. Clearly not happy.
:36:47. > :36:50.How will he feel that Maldonado has got the quickest time? That is the
:36:50. > :36:54.dagger in the heart, that is the thing killing him more than
:36:54. > :36:58.anything not that -- it is not that he didn't get around the lap, it is
:36:58. > :37:03.that his team-mate is heading the time sheet. That is the biggest
:37:03. > :37:05.blow you can give the driver. Frustration for Bruno Senna and for
:37:05. > :37:12.Jenson Button, has he managed to work out what is wrong with the
:37:12. > :37:16.car? He is with Lee. I am sure you are the last person that any of us
:37:16. > :37:22.want to see here, you on your radio complaining about understeer and
:37:22. > :37:26.the rear end, explained when it went wrong. I don't know, all day I
:37:26. > :37:30.struggled with the balance. Yesterday it was fantastic and we
:37:30. > :37:35.were quickest on the soft tyre and I thought we would be reasonably
:37:35. > :37:41.competitive and get to Q3, but that is not the case. Just have
:37:41. > :37:44.struggled with a debt -- very different balance to the one I had
:37:44. > :37:49.yesterday and I don't know why it that is. We haven't changed that
:37:49. > :37:53.much, that is the thing. All of qualifying, I had a lot of
:37:53. > :37:58.oversteer and in that final run, when we added more front end into
:37:58. > :38:02.the car, I had a lot of understeer. So I don't know what is going on
:38:02. > :38:07.with the balance but there you go, we are out in a Q2 and it doesn't
:38:07. > :38:12.really help, because we don't have any option tyres left for tomorrow.
:38:12. > :38:19.But all is good within the team, I think Lewis should get pole
:38:19. > :38:24.position as he is the only person with new soft tyres! I don't know
:38:24. > :38:29.what was going on with mine. Jenson Button making it clear that
:38:29. > :38:35.soft tyres are still helpful. A man who didn't have a chance to use his,
:38:35. > :38:40.Mark Webber. 12 on the grid that he has been on pole on in the last two
:38:40. > :38:44.years. It is hard to know what is going on. Look at the way the grid
:38:44. > :38:49.is, obviously it is not the end of qualifying but you have a Williams
:38:49. > :38:55.and a Lotus, where are the big teams? Where his Ferrari, Mercedes,
:38:55. > :38:59.McLaren? It is remarkable -- wherries. The turnaround in
:38:59. > :39:04.performances making it so unpredictable. Brilliant for us but
:39:04. > :39:07.not for the drivers. This lends itself to looking at the race
:39:07. > :39:15.tomorrow and having decreed set up in a certain weight is one part of
:39:15. > :39:20.the battle but it is having the tyres ready -- having the grid set
:39:20. > :39:25.up in a certain way. The drivers think they are the most important
:39:25. > :39:30.thing but it is not true, they have to understand there is a show and
:39:30. > :39:34.this is just amazing for that show. This unpredictability is making
:39:34. > :39:40.this a phenomenal year for Formula One and long may it last, well done
:39:40. > :39:45.to Pirelli for making it possible. Here is a very hard question, one
:39:45. > :39:51.word and so, using your crystal ball, who will be our pole? Lewis
:39:51. > :39:56.Hamilton. Let's find out what happens. This is the fight for pole
:39:56. > :40:00.position for the Spanish Grand Prix. BEN EDWARDS: And Sebastian Vettel
:40:00. > :40:04.is waiting at the end of the pit lane to be the very first car on
:40:04. > :40:08.the track. They made sure they were because they sent him down with a
:40:08. > :40:12.good minute to go. DAVID COULTHARD: I am trying to
:40:12. > :40:15.work that one out. Not good for engine temperatures, although they
:40:15. > :40:20.will have sent the car out a little bit cooler from the garage to
:40:20. > :40:26.accommodate that, but you are losing tyre temperature. You may
:40:26. > :40:31.think that won't be any she with a 38 degree track temperature, it has
:40:31. > :40:35.gone down since the start -- won't be an issue. It is clouding over
:40:35. > :40:41.slightly and that will change which clouds -- cars are able to exploit
:40:41. > :40:47.the tyres to the maximum. The Pirelli is very sensitive to track
:40:47. > :40:57.temperature change. A sire -- slow out-lap, is he getting a site
:40:57. > :41:00.
:41:00. > :41:06.there? -- sighter? Gary, your thoughts on this strategy and how
:41:06. > :41:11.badly off our Red Bull, not in the top 10 but they will have some
:41:11. > :41:16.tyres left. They will have lots of tyres left, Jenson Button has used
:41:16. > :41:20.one set of his hard tyres. They can look at what the weather will do
:41:20. > :41:23.tomorrow, because there is a chance of rain but it is getting cooler at
:41:23. > :41:28.least, so they can start on whatever tyre they want and finish
:41:28. > :41:33.on whatever one they want. The best time to use a soft tyre will be
:41:34. > :41:37.late in the race. It is a good position to be able to make that
:41:37. > :41:43.choice. The reason that session caught everybody out is the cloud
:41:44. > :41:47.cover. I am not sure what Sebastian Vettel is doing it, something is
:41:47. > :41:52.going on, trying to get on top of why they are not as quick as they
:41:52. > :41:57.should be. He is not driving quickly, no full throttle on the
:41:57. > :42:01.straight, no DRS. It is one of those situations, if he does a lap
:42:01. > :42:07.now, he ends up in front of Kobayashi, who will not be doing a
:42:08. > :42:16.lap. So if anybody else does and, by doing one, Vettel will end up in
:42:16. > :42:20.front of them. -- if anybody else doesn't. If that is the tactic, it
:42:20. > :42:23.is an interesting gamble, because it loses a lot of grid position and
:42:23. > :42:28.they will have to hope they get through the first few corners
:42:28. > :42:35.safely. We have seen incidents at the first couple of corners in the
:42:35. > :42:39.past further down, you are at risk. You are, but you assume the others
:42:39. > :42:43.in the bottom half of the top 10 are in the same situation, to win
:42:43. > :42:47.it, you have got to be there at the end and have to be careful into the
:42:47. > :42:52.first corner. But we have seen in the past, some of the smaller teams
:42:52. > :42:57.that have made it into the top 10 have just banked it and take the
:42:58. > :43:01.position and saved the tyres. And they had left the top teams to
:43:01. > :43:06.battle out for pole position, but are we at a situation now where the
:43:06. > :43:11.tyres are so critical that nobody will attempt to set a time and will
:43:11. > :43:14.concentrate fully on the race tomorrow? I'm not so sure, because
:43:14. > :43:19.Hamilton has just flashed past the line and he was travelling pretty
:43:19. > :43:25.fast, so he will be going for it. It would be hard to tell Hamilton
:43:25. > :43:30.that you can't go for pole, he loves it! Can he gets his third?
:43:30. > :43:37.One thing is for sure, he is not going to get any traffic, he is the
:43:37. > :43:43.only person on the racetrack. that all we will see of Vettel in
:43:43. > :43:46.this session? We will have to see. Lewis Hamilton again, that is a
:43:46. > :43:53.good first sector time, and he is definitely chasing yet another
:43:53. > :43:58.front-row start. At Red Bull, the heart of blankets have gone back on.
:43:58. > :44:02.We will see the end of this lap from Lewis. He looks a lot better
:44:02. > :44:08.through 12 than his previous lap, which we went on board with and he
:44:08. > :44:17.had some oversteer. A little bit of oversteer as he powers out of their
:44:17. > :44:26.team. Remember, he has done a couple of times where he has taken
:44:26. > :44:34.pole in the final session. It is the fastest, mayor 22.5, will it be
:44:34. > :44:38.enough? He lost a bit of time at the last chicane. -- 1: 22.5.
:44:38. > :44:43.McLaren runs very stiff on the front axle to exploit the
:44:43. > :44:50.aerodynamic front profile of the car. Not the fastest time he has
:44:50. > :44:54.done, he was 22.4 in the previous part of qualifying, so just over
:44:54. > :45:01.one-tenth slower on a slightly cooler track. Well Maldonado go for
:45:01. > :45:06.the glory run? He was certainly very impressive in Q2, but Williams,
:45:06. > :45:12.do they realistically think about today and the glory of getting pole
:45:12. > :45:19.0 that the Mercedes heading for the pits? Abusaid is running a harder
:45:19. > :45:22.compound. May be struggling to set in -- Mercedes running. They would
:45:22. > :45:32.change in the wheels on Vettel's car, so will they send him back
:45:32. > :45:35.
:45:35. > :45:40.car. The mechanics are round. It looks like the Mercedes team are
:45:40. > :45:45.going to do a quick change of tyres. It could be checking a surge
:45:45. > :45:49.charging, there is all sorts of clever toys in his cars that we
:45:49. > :45:55.presume are working at all times but it is not unusual for emto have
:45:55. > :46:05.various issues. Another set of wheels going on there. -- unyueb
:46:05. > :46:05.
:46:05. > :46:09.usual for them to have. Nico Rosberg is going to log a lap.
:46:09. > :46:16.have both mer Dees in the top ten. Only one McLaren and only one Red
:46:16. > :46:21.Bull. We have both of the Lotuss, one Ferrari, and both Saubers and
:46:21. > :46:25.one Williams. Sauber have done very very well to get both their cars in,
:46:25. > :46:30.Kobayashi cannot now run, his car stopped the end of Q2. He can't
:46:30. > :46:33.take any further part to have got the two cars into the top ten is
:46:33. > :46:39.impressive. Rosberg, what is his first sector like? It is on the
:46:39. > :46:44.pace. It is a 22.9. A similar pace to what we saw from Hamilton..
:46:44. > :46:48.just about a tenth and a half down on Hamilton's first sector. Not bad
:46:48. > :46:53.for the Mercedes. Let us see how he builds the middle part of the lap.
:46:53. > :46:56.He is going through turn nine. Alonso has had a new set of tyres.
:46:56. > :47:02.It is difficult to see on the camera angle we have here.
:47:03. > :47:07.Meanwhile, threat us -- let us keep an eye on Rosberg. A bit slower by
:47:07. > :47:14.two tenths than what Hamilton did. He is probably on for about 22, 7
:47:14. > :47:19.or 8 depending how he finishes the lap. Doesn't look as committed.
:47:19. > :47:26.Able to steal more of the curb and control the car. 22.5 for Hamilton.
:47:26. > :47:30.Let us see what it is. 23.0 so half a second down on Hamilton's time
:47:30. > :47:34.there from Nico Rosberg. He dropped a tenth in the first sector. Two in
:47:34. > :47:39.the middle and a further two in the last sector relative to the McLaren.
:47:39. > :47:42.Maldonado, heading out on to the track. Is this a huge opportunity
:47:42. > :47:47.for the Venezuelan in the Williams? Meanwhile Lewis Hamilton about to
:47:47. > :47:52.go out on a new set of the softer tyre, so then we could really see a
:47:52. > :47:56.dramatic lap time coming from Lewis. Best qualifying performance from
:47:56. > :47:59.Pastor Maldonado in the past has been a seventh place on the grid.
:47:59. > :48:03.He was eighth on the grid earlier this year in Australia. A good
:48:03. > :48:07.chance from Maldonado to improve on that today. Vettel now on his way,

:49:19. > :49:23.an eye on it. Kimi Raikkonen 22.6. So quicker than what Alonso has
:49:23. > :49:28.managed. That is right. That is an indicator that the Lotus is on a
:49:28. > :49:32.quicker lap than the Ferrari. It is the support to the Ferrari as he
:49:32. > :49:35.drives round this circuit. The fans cheering Alonso's every move that.

:50:14. > :50:21.No, Raikkonen is second fastest. Just over a tenth of a second

:51:26. > :51:29.that is the man would be on pole. Great lap from Hamilton. What about

:51:33. > :51:38.only half an hour before the session, he is standing there

:51:48. > :51:54.Williams, thanks to Pastor Maldonado, that is a huge story.
:51:54. > :51:58.And Fernando Alonso third. That is what I was going to say Ferrari
:51:58. > :52:03.have made huge steps forward. That is Lewis Hamilton, does he have an
:52:03. > :52:07.issue. He stopped out on track. That won't affect the qualifying
:52:07. > :52:11.position, but is there something that could mean that he needs to
:52:11. > :52:14.change a gearbox or engine, we will find out in time. Let us hope it's

:52:35. > :52:39.
:52:39. > :52:43.The guys who went for it. Very good job. They were talking to Pastor
:52:43. > :52:49.over the radio. Bear in mind that is his best ever grid position by a
:52:49. > :52:52.long, long way, Williams last pole position wasn't so long ago because
:52:52. > :52:56.Nico Hulkenberg took that dramatic position back if 2010. But it is
:52:56. > :53:01.still a fantastic result for the team. Hamilton has taken pole

:53:07. > :53:10.Peter rev son, the American in the 07s with the first pole for team.
:53:10. > :53:20.Maldonado second fastest. Alonso third in the Ferrari. Then the two

:54:21. > :54:25.I never had any idea it could be so intense. Well done to Lewis, we had
:54:25. > :54:30.an idea, but there for me there is the Starman, what he has done by
:54:30. > :54:37.sticking with Williams, growing with them and making this into the
:54:37. > :54:41.performance giving Fran Williams such an unbelievable birthday
:54:41. > :54:45.present. Congratulations to Maldonado. We have spoken about the
:54:45. > :54:49.fact we have had four different constructor, we have four different
:54:49. > :54:54.constructors to the front of the grid. We have. You know, sometimes
:54:54. > :54:57.we have to pinch oust, why has this happened? And you have to say, we
:54:57. > :55:01.keep coming back and sorry to be offensive towards Michael
:55:01. > :55:07.Schumacher, but you have to get credit to Pirelli because they have
:55:07. > :55:11.managed to be able to mix this up to make sure it is a gigantic show.
:55:11. > :55:16.Michael Schumacher starts ninth. are are delighted for Lewis
:55:16. > :55:22.Hamilton. It's a special pole position as well, the 150th in
:55:22. > :55:26.McLaren's racing history. Congratulations, pole position but
:55:27. > :55:29.Lewis stopped on the slowing down lap, do you foe what happened?
:55:29. > :55:33.yet, a technical problem on the car, we have to understand, so the
:55:33. > :55:38.engineers have to go through the data, so still a bit of a worry but
:55:38. > :55:44.hopefully great drive by Lewis, and, you know, he did everything right
:55:44. > :55:50.so we have to figure out what the issue is on the car. Jenson in 11th,
:55:50. > :55:54.but Lewis didn't have the same problems of oversteer? Jensen was
:55:54. > :55:58.quickest yet but it -- yesterday, but it is difficult with the quick
:55:58. > :56:01.cars, that is the challenge, it the same for everyone. Between Jensen
:56:01. > :56:07.and his engineers you have to get that right. We didn't get it right
:56:07. > :56:15.on his car, that is disappointing, but Lewis did, and his guys did a
:56:15. > :56:19.great job. Well done and good luck Fernando Alonso in front of his
:56:19. > :56:22.home crowd I looks like he was going to take that pole position
:56:22. > :56:25.but along came Maldonado and Lewis Hamilton and there he is having a
:56:25. > :56:29.word with his team, they are probably telling him don't tell
:56:29. > :56:33.people the real reason the car stopped out on track. There is's a
:56:34. > :56:39.good boy! We will discuss all things do with McLaren in a moment.
:56:39. > :56:45.And Red Bull. But before we speak to Christian, let us speak to Mark
:56:45. > :56:50.Webber. Mark you have such a good record, what went wrong today?
:56:50. > :56:55.Ultimately, I think that the first lap in Q2 was very good. It was
:56:55. > :56:58.very competitive. That lulled us into a false sense of security. The
:56:58. > :57:03.team were happy with the lap, they said don't, we don't need to go
:57:03. > :57:08.again, that is enough to get through to Q3 so we parked the car
:57:08. > :57:12.and waited. By then the track kept coming. People kept improving and
:57:12. > :57:16.we got caught with our pants down. Which stage were you starting to
:57:16. > :57:22.think you had made an error. With about a seconds to go but then it
:57:22. > :57:26.is too late. You are committed. I was happy with how I drove in
:57:26. > :57:31.qualify -- quali. Happy with my laps. Now we start, this track is,
:57:31. > :57:35.I have done races at the front, fantastic. I have done races in the
:57:35. > :57:39.middle of the field and it sucks. I need the see what we have to do
:57:39. > :57:43.tomorrow. The breaking news is Lewis Hamilton was asked to turn
:57:43. > :57:50.off his car over the radio from the team. We will try and clear that up.
:57:50. > :57:54.Christian, let us reaccuse -- react to what Mark Webber was saying. A
:57:54. > :57:59.mistake? We thought we had done enough. We knew it was going to be
:57:59. > :58:05.tight. It was just below the cut off that we work out before, we
:58:05. > :58:09.were prepared to take a risk, the down side is you don't make it, he,
:58:09. > :58:13.he still has four new sets of tyres. We were going to try and go for a
:58:13. > :58:17.grid time with that last set of tyres available to him. Clearly you
:58:17. > :58:20.don't see the emphasis on qualifying any more. And that is
:58:20. > :58:25.verified with what you did with Sebastian. Do you think he is safe
:58:25. > :58:29.to win this race from where he is with all those tyres left? I think
:58:29. > :58:33.it is a very different game this year. Ultimately we didn't have
:58:33. > :58:38.great one lap pace. I think the wind this afternoon compared to
:58:38. > :58:41.this morning was a bit of a factor yofrplt have to look at it now over
:58:41. > :58:46.two days. Kimi Raikkonen demonstrated three weeks' ago going
:58:46. > :58:49.into the race with new sets of tyres is quite an advantage, Mark
:58:49. > :58:53.has got four soefts new tyres available for him tomorrow, so he,
:58:53. > :59:00.you know he is in good shape from that respect. Sebastian has used
:59:00. > :59:04.one more set, but it will make a fascinating race. We are loving
:59:04. > :59:08.Formula One. How stressful it is for you. Eddie predicted Lewis
:59:08. > :59:12.Hamilton, but it is difficult to call this sport at the moment.
:59:12. > :59:18.would have predicted Pastor Maldonado on the front row? A
:59:18. > :59:23.fantastic birthday present for Sir frank, 70 today, and I think that
:59:23. > :59:32.it is so unpredictable. Jensen not to make the top ten also. You have
:59:32. > :59:35.two of the key contenders, Jensen and Mark, 11th and 12, it is set
:59:35. > :59:45.for a fascinating race. Let us hear from the current World Champion,
:59:45. > :59:49.
:59:49. > :59:54.session, you didn't set a time, tell us what is going on? Nothing
:59:54. > :00:00.was wrong, we decided to go into a lap to have a free choice of tyres
:00:00. > :00:03.tomorrow. If we finished, we would have to start on the soft tyres, so
:00:03. > :00:09.it was closed between Nico Rosberg and myself, which was the only one
:00:09. > :00:15.we were really battling winds in Q3. The rest seemed to be too far away
:00:15. > :00:18.that battling with. We were happy all of the way to qualifying, but
:00:18. > :00:24.from the first session, really struggling to find the same balance
:00:24. > :00:29.that I had before. Q2 with the first run was crucial, I didn't
:00:29. > :00:35.manage to pull one out that was strong enough to make it 2 Q3, so
:00:35. > :00:40.we had to go again and burn the last set of new tyres. It was clear
:00:40. > :00:45.we haven't got a shot in year three, but all in all, you have to respect
:00:45. > :00:49.the fact that we were not quick enough -- in Q3. Where we are now
:00:49. > :00:55.it is the optimum, we said the couple of new tyres and we go from
:00:55. > :00:57.there. -- we saved. How do you think it will play out tomorrow?
:00:57. > :01:04.think if you can find someone in the paddock answering that
:01:04. > :01:09.question... Is that the best of the bad situation that happened today?
:01:09. > :01:13.I wouldn't say bad situation but we were surprised by how much the
:01:13. > :01:17.others could do. In the end, we were more or less expected -- where
:01:17. > :01:21.we expected to be but we felt better in practice. We were not
:01:21. > :01:26.able to make that step which everyone else seemed to be able to
:01:26. > :01:30.make and, yes, there is something to gain that there, but you have to
:01:30. > :01:36.respect the fact that they were simply quicker. If it is within a
:01:36. > :01:41.tenth or two, you can always argued, but today there was a bit more
:01:41. > :01:44.missing. But I'm quite confident for the race, we have a good race
:01:44. > :01:49.far, and I'm looking forward to tomorrow. We have a couple of new
:01:49. > :01:52.sets which have proved successful for people this year so hopefully
:01:52. > :01:56.our turn. And you have got your eye on
:01:57. > :02:01.Sebastian Vettel for the race. think there is a bit at the years
:02:01. > :02:05.there, he has the tyres and he has made the point that it is not the
:02:05. > :02:08.end of the world. We now he is a great racer and we were all
:02:08. > :02:12.surprised with the way he turned it around in Bahrain and he has made
:02:12. > :02:19.the point that it makes for a fascinating race. If it is
:02:19. > :02:23.unpredictable for the drivers, what is it for as watching? Turn on your
:02:23. > :02:27.televisions tomorrow because it is going to be one big race. Kimi
:02:27. > :02:31.Raikkonen flashing behind Eddie Jordan there, he Phillip -- starts
:02:31. > :02:35.in fifth on the grid. We are about done here, but you consider press
:02:35. > :02:39.conference and all of the other reaction on the website. We are
:02:39. > :02:44.disappearing because Wigan Warriors and St Helens are next in the
:02:44. > :02:50.quarter-final of the Challenge Cup, but we have more Formula One today
:02:50. > :02:54.at 6:45pm and we return live in high definition at 12:10pm tomorrow
:02:54. > :02:58.afternoon for the Spanish Grand Prix and the way the grid is set up,
:02:58. > :03:02.I strongly suggest you join us. It was going to be an incredible
:03:02. > :03:08.moment for Fernando Alonso, he had the provisional pole, he thought he
