:01:13. > :01:17.Previously on F1... Fabulous stuff! Good afternoon and welcome to the

:01:17. > :01:22.Circuit de Catalunya, where once again the world's best pit their

:01:22. > :01:27.wits against each other on Spanish soil. Barcelona is home to one of

:01:27. > :01:37.the best football teams in the world, and 20 years ago home to the

:01:37. > :01:37.

:01:37. > :01:47.most stylish of Olympic Games. shot over 90 metres, and the

:01:47. > :01:57.Olympic flame bursts. The leader of the competition...

:01:57. > :02:04.

:02:04. > :02:09.His final dive. If you are going to win gold, that is the way to do it.

:02:09. > :02:17.Isn't that beautiful? You can see they are clearly proud of it but is

:02:17. > :02:27.just the surroundings, the beauty as you look back over the city. It

:02:27. > :02:35.

:02:36. > :02:42.looks like the underneath of an American's Cup boat. Wow. A lot

:02:42. > :02:47.bigger. What were you doing in 1992? I was a test driver for

:02:47. > :02:53.Williams. I had a year with the Yamaha engine, I will never forget

:02:53. > :02:58.it. What were your results? wouldn't dare to tell you, it was

:02:58. > :03:04.not one of my better years. What a dreadful season this is turning out

:03:04. > :03:11.to be for the Jordan team. Don't mention that one car qualified and

:03:11. > :03:21.one car retired. We won't mention it. Will we be friends this week?

:03:21. > :03:24.

:03:24. > :03:31.Yes, and I am going to take you for a room. -- a run.

:03:31. > :03:41.What are you doing? I want freedom of movement. This is how

:03:41. > :03:54.

:03:54. > :04:03.competitive you are, I just wanted Christie comes storming through. It

:04:03. > :04:09.is Linford Christie! He is the Olympic champion, the greatest

:04:09. > :04:13.prize in sport. He has prepared himself for years for this.

:04:13. > :04:23.does it feel to be the Olympic champion? By Anne just so happy to

:04:23. > :04:26.

:04:26. > :04:35.win something, finally. 14 race wins in David Coulthard's career.

:04:35. > :04:38.The greatest moment in an athlete's life. Rest assured, that is not the

:04:38. > :04:48.greatest moment of sporting excellence you will see this

:04:48. > :04:49.

:04:49. > :04:53.afternoon on BBC One. Thank you for joining us. In 1992 this place was

:04:53. > :04:58.an Olympic city, now that honour belongs to London and, David, you

:04:58. > :05:03.have not lost your competitive streak. That is one of the easiest

:05:03. > :05:10.races I have taken part in but it is nice to get victory here in

:05:10. > :05:15.Barcelona. Eddie, being serious for a moment, this is such an important

:05:15. > :05:20.place for Formula One. It has often signified the restart of the season.

:05:20. > :05:25.Yes, but you talked about the Olympics, you have talked about the

:05:26. > :05:31.Grand Prix here, let's not forget what Spain has done for golf with

:05:31. > :05:36.Seve Ballesteros. He created an opportunity for Europeans to take

:05:36. > :05:46.on the world's best. This country has a great sporting history and we

:05:46. > :05:56.

:05:56. > :06:01.are delighted to be here. A quick improve their cars, and we are back

:06:01. > :06:06.here in about six weeks. Right now, the teams and the drivers are not

:06:06. > :06:16.thinking about the races to come. With less than an hour until light

:06:16. > :06:29.

:06:30. > :06:33.out, every driver has arrived here we decided that man would be the

:06:34. > :06:38.last to appear on the driver arriving moment at the start of the

:06:38. > :06:46.programme, but it was the start of Formula One - happy birthday,

:06:46. > :06:53.exactly 60 years ago today, may 13, 1950, this was Formula One being

:06:53. > :07:03.born. The cars are lined up alongside the pits. These are the

:07:03. > :07:04.

:07:04. > :07:08.starters. It is a good start with the Alfas in the lead. Would you

:07:09. > :07:13.like to have hopped into one of these cars, David? I have had the

:07:13. > :07:20.chance to drive some of the old classic cars, and they are

:07:20. > :07:24.incredible, the power they produced. The crowd at Silverstone was

:07:24. > :07:27.massive, it somehow captivated the audience. As you look around, we

:07:27. > :07:31.audience. As you look around, we have the grandstand filling up, the

:07:31. > :07:36.infrastructure is incredible, the money spent is remarkable, yet it

:07:36. > :07:41.is Ferrari who appeared in that very first season all of those

:07:42. > :07:46.years ago. I think if anyone deserves the accolades for being

:07:46. > :07:50.present, persevering, it in good times and bad, and we are

:07:50. > :07:54.ridiculing them sometimes when they don't get it right, but when they

:07:55. > :08:02.win, and they have an unbelievable driver at the moment, they have a

:08:03. > :08:08.great chance here. It was an amazing season that year.

:08:08. > :08:12.Eventually just two points separated the winning driver, take

:08:13. > :08:22.a look at the way the standings are for this year and I wonder what the

:08:23. > :08:38.

:08:38. > :08:43.drivers from all those years ago in Silverstone was the first time

:08:43. > :08:47.for reigning monarch had been to a Grand Prix, but who would be king

:08:48. > :08:52.yesterday for qualifying? It was dramatic, and it was decided off

:08:52. > :08:55.the track. Though Ms Hamilton described his

:08:55. > :09:01.first ever Spanish pole position as a dream, but it's soon turned into

:09:01. > :09:08.a nightmare. We need to stop the car, we have a problem. Please turn

:09:08. > :09:13.off. Stopping on track meant a trip to the stewards, who discovered

:09:13. > :09:17.there would not be enough fuel in the car to get back to the pit lane.

:09:17. > :09:27.They disqualified Hamilton and he will start at the back of the grid.

:09:27. > :09:37.Jenson Button didn't make it out of Q2. Hamilton's demotion means he

:09:37. > :09:41.

:09:41. > :09:45.gets his first ever... Felipe Massa could only manage 17th, although

:09:45. > :09:49.Ferrari have said they are disappointed with his performance.

:09:49. > :09:54.Mark Webber said Red Bull had been caught with their pants down after

:09:54. > :09:58.he was told that time he had set was good enough to make it into Q3

:09:58. > :10:04.but the frenzied end to the session meant he was knocked out. Sebastian

:10:04. > :10:10.Vettel made it into the top 10 but opted to save his tyres for today.

:10:10. > :10:15.The grid looks like this... Hamilton's disqualification means

:10:15. > :10:25.everyone moves forward one plays. Fernando Alonso will start in the

:10:25. > :11:01.

:11:01. > :11:08.one man's paint is another man's again. Where were you when you were

:11:08. > :11:13.told you what the man on pole position? We were here behind us

:11:13. > :11:19.because we were celebrating. We were so happy when we heard the

:11:19. > :11:25.news, and we did a great step forward. We are looking forward to

:11:25. > :11:29.this race. I had a chance to look at York on board lap and it was not

:11:29. > :11:35.perfect in many ways, it looks like you were fighting with oversteer.

:11:35. > :11:41.It must have been an incredible feeling to drive this track with

:11:41. > :11:46.this car. I made the best of the tyres, and even if I had a laugh

:11:46. > :11:54.that was not so clean, I was able to put a flat together. It was a

:11:54. > :11:58.good lap. In Australia you had a ding-dong battle with Fernando

:11:58. > :12:05.Alonso and here sitting beside you on the grid. Out a fully beat into

:12:05. > :12:15.the first corner with him? It will be tough, for sure, the Lotus is

:12:15. > :12:17.

:12:17. > :12:20.quite quick but I was happy on Friday when we did the runs. I hope

:12:20. > :12:28.to have the same for today's so I am looking forward to it. You want

:12:28. > :12:33.to win or you want a strong points finish? At I want to win, naturally.

:12:33. > :12:39.Congratulate shins and well done. It will be about 8 o'clock in the

:12:39. > :12:43.morning in Venezuela when the race start. The reason Maldonado is on

:12:43. > :12:49.the front row is because of problems at McLaren and earlier on

:12:49. > :12:54.I spoke to them. All of the McLaren fans who went to

:12:54. > :12:59.bed dreaming of Lewis Hamilton on pole position, it is not to be. Can

:12:59. > :13:04.you explain what happened? during his last qualifying lap, the

:13:04. > :13:08.data showed us that if he had completed that lot, on return to

:13:08. > :13:14.the pits he might not have enough fuel to provide the one litre fuel

:13:14. > :13:19.sample. It sounds easy to know how much fuel is in a Formula One car

:13:19. > :13:24.but it is not an empty vessel, it is a complex system trying to

:13:24. > :13:29.capture the last few grams of fuel being thrown around while it is

:13:29. > :13:34.moving. Data indicated that, we know it is a clear regulation

:13:34. > :13:37.requirement that you have to be able to provide that one litre of

:13:37. > :13:42.fuel sample so we decided to stop the car and make sure we could

:13:42. > :13:46.provide it, which we did. The sample was taken, in fact 1.3

:13:46. > :13:53.litres was provided, but our reasons for stopping the car were

:13:53. > :13:59.not considered and that is why they have penalised us. The reasons for

:13:59. > :14:03.stopping the car were what? Where did it go wrong? There was an error

:14:03. > :14:07.in the fuelling process and not enough fuel went into the car prior

:14:07. > :14:11.to the last run. We know that because of the analysis at the time

:14:11. > :14:15.we were making these decisions we were just relying on

:14:15. > :14:20.instrumentation. It could have been that we stopped the car and found

:14:20. > :14:25.many more litres of fuel in the car but we have to make a call. We knew

:14:25. > :14:28.we were required to provide a 1 litre fuel sample, it was a black

:14:28. > :14:34.and white regulation, we wanted to comply with it and we took that

:14:34. > :14:38.decision but with only 1.3 litres of fuel the FA considered we should

:14:38. > :14:43.not have stopped the car to preserve fuel to provide the sample.

:14:43. > :14:47.This follows on from some issues in pit stops. It is no exaggeration to

:14:47. > :14:53.say that errors like this constantly from the team can cost

:14:53. > :14:59.the world title. Not constantly - only one of these errors can, that

:14:59. > :15:02.is how tight it is. There is a lot of pain about this, from Neath

:15:02. > :15:06.right down through this team but I had a lot of conversations with

:15:06. > :15:12.Lewis Hamilton last night and inevitably he was shocked when I

:15:12. > :15:15.told him what had happened. He was very surprised, disappointed, and

:15:15. > :15:20.all the emotions you would expect from a highly competitive person

:15:20. > :15:28.like him. By the end of the conversations, he was talking as a

:15:28. > :15:38.team member. I have a lot of confidence in his ability to race

:15:38. > :15:38.

:15:39. > :15:45.eradicate the problems. Those are the pit guns there to get the

:15:45. > :15:50.wheels on and off. The reality is they could have cost themselves the

:15:50. > :15:53.world title. This season will be tight to, the very wire. They were,

:15:53. > :15:56.finger problems not just yesterday but in races gone by. We know what

:15:56. > :15:59.happened in Bahrain, China I think this is a problem that the

:15:59. > :16:05.management and the engineers, they have to take some of this on the

:16:05. > :16:11.chin. It is not just the mechanics. If you owned this team would heads

:16:11. > :16:16.have rolled? Yes there is no room for error. If they want to win they

:16:16. > :16:22.need to up their game. The stuer wards aren't helping them. Lewis

:16:22. > :16:26.demoted to the back of the grid for an error at the end. I'm going to

:16:26. > :16:30.be careful. Ludicrous, the wrong decision, the worst that should

:16:30. > :16:35.have happened was back to tenth. She should have lost Q36789 I think

:16:35. > :16:40.that was a wrong, wrong decision. What can he do finally? Hefrpblgts

:16:40. > :16:45.will be so fired up he will get to the top five. Well, talking to the

:16:45. > :16:52.top five that is where Sergio Perez would like to finish. He starts far

:16:52. > :16:58.up the grid. So joining me now is Sergio Perez, for the Sauber team.

:16:58. > :17:03.How are you? Good. Good qualifying yesterday. You have been upgraded

:17:03. > :17:07.to fifth. Views going into the race? I am looking forward to the

:17:07. > :17:11.race, anything can happen. Yesterday, we did not expect, we

:17:11. > :17:15.had a really good one, so I think today can be another good surprise,

:17:15. > :17:20.hopefully, it can be a really nice surprise stkpw. You have developed

:17:20. > :17:25.this reputation in a short period of time of being good with your

:17:25. > :17:29.tyres. The tyre wear doesn't seem as bad here, they are predicting

:17:29. > :17:33.two or three stops. Does that takeaway some of the advantage from

:17:33. > :17:38.your driving style? Here is very difficult for the drivers'

:17:38. > :17:44.perspective to do anything to save tyres. It will be very difficult,

:17:44. > :17:48.as you have an zerpbgts which is limited. It is none anish shue. I

:17:48. > :17:53.think we will go aggressive today we will try to find the people in

:17:53. > :17:57.front of us, and not try to save any tyres, so we will be quite

:17:57. > :18:01.aggressive. We like that. Drivers are going agree si. Have a good

:18:02. > :18:06.race. It is good news to hear that and the grid is looking fantastic.

:18:06. > :18:12.His nickname is Speedy but the car is as fast as him and they have

:18:12. > :18:18.built a good car. I the big transmore maition is the Williams

:18:18. > :18:21.and Sauber. I am overjoyed it is great the see minnow teams coming u.

:18:21. > :18:27.They have callled themselves the big four but they are not so big.

:18:27. > :18:32.The wheels are going on Jensen's car. Those retires to get him round

:18:32. > :18:35.to grid. The cars will make their way to the grid in a couple of

:18:35. > :18:41.minutes. Let us hear from Jenson Button. When we spoke yesterday,

:18:41. > :18:47.after Q the you seemed puzzled. Has the riddle been solved you can have

:18:47. > :18:51.a more successful day? It is easy for do you say, riddle. I think so.

:18:51. > :18:55.It is, we had a very good run on high fuel on Friday, and we just

:18:55. > :18:59.have been running through the numbers, and yeah, we slueld good

:18:59. > :19:04.race, you still never know until the lights go out, but it should be

:19:04. > :19:08.an exciting race and obviously, there are quick guys tat front but

:19:08. > :19:13.Red Bull are in the same boat as we are. So beating the Red Bulls is

:19:13. > :19:18.very important for us today, I think. Also that the stage when we

:19:18. > :19:21.chatted Lewis was still out there we didn't think you would be the

:19:21. > :19:27.highest place McLaren. With Mark Webber how important is it to you

:19:27. > :19:32.to score valuable points in a than is looking so tight? Yes, it is, it

:19:32. > :19:36.is a very mixed up season so far, so getting points on the board is

:19:36. > :19:39.important. But no, obviously very disappointing for Lewis, he was

:19:39. > :19:42.very quick yesterday, and personally feel that you know with

:19:42. > :19:46.his pace he dereceived to be on pole position. But he is back in

:19:46. > :19:51.last, and I am sure he will still have a race from there. My aim is

:19:51. > :19:56.to get my head down and think of myself, and get as many points as

:19:56. > :19:59.we can. The you look at the pace of the cars, it is very mixed up again.

:19:59. > :20:07.Unusual to see Maldonado in a Williams. Fair play he did a great

:20:07. > :20:11.job, and good on, when we are celebrating France Williams' 70

:20:11. > :20:16.birthday. I think we will have a different result at the end of the

:20:17. > :20:20.race. Jensen sounding confident. He will hope his car is faster in the

:20:20. > :20:24.race than in qualifying. As you can hear the pit lane is open. The cars

:20:24. > :20:28.are making their way to the grid. Less than half an hour till lights

:20:28. > :20:31.out. Remarkably for cars that travel at 200mph, it is when they

:20:31. > :20:37.are standing still that the race can be won and lost, right here in

:20:37. > :20:43.the pit stops. The teams spend million and the drivers dedicate

:20:43. > :20:49.that life to finding that tenth of a second. Races can be won orless

:20:49. > :20:55.here. McLaren have a problem. It's the left rear again. Each

:20:55. > :21:00.individual has his own job to do they are monitored visually and

:21:00. > :21:08.electronically. Making sure each person gets the job done properly.

:21:08. > :21:15.The fact is the tyres. You are looking for things. Wheel was off.

:21:15. > :21:19.Hit as hard as you can. Put your hand up. Amazing pit stop. Sub

:21:20. > :21:24.three seconds. What can go wrong in three seconds? One of the things is

:21:24. > :21:29.a cross threaded wheel nut. It gives you the feeling the nut is

:21:29. > :21:33.tight. It hasn't. If somebody does that what do row do. The gunman

:21:33. > :21:36.will drop a gun, he will pick another one and start again. Does

:21:36. > :21:45.it damage the thread on the axle. The axle is solid. The damage

:21:45. > :21:49.occurs on the nut. 24 hole, three peg, u throw the wheel on and you

:21:49. > :21:53.can't miss. These are magnet, that is drive system. Bang it into

:21:53. > :21:59.position, tighten it up, pull the socket off. Job done. Would you

:21:59. > :22:04.give me a job? Yes, with the AA! Certainly McLaren will be hoping

:22:04. > :22:08.for less mistakes. These are live shots from the McLaren garage right

:22:08. > :22:13.now. Lewis Hamilton going tout start the race from 24th position

:22:13. > :22:18.and Jenson Button alongside him with his engine reving. David, how

:22:18. > :22:24.nervous will they be during the first pit stop? We though they have

:22:24. > :22:28.made changes to personnel? It is an experienced team. It is not usual

:22:28. > :22:32.for finger trouble to happen. They are so technical and they are

:22:32. > :22:35.trying to get the stops down three second. They have made changes. I

:22:35. > :22:38.don't think they will be nervous because they have done this a lot

:22:38. > :22:42.of times before. They need to prove the changes will takeaway the

:22:42. > :22:46.issues they have had. Nay will rehearse this so many times in

:22:46. > :22:51.every morning, every afternoon, during the factory, this is not

:22:51. > :22:55.something they have just discarded. They will want to make sure the

:22:55. > :23:00.show the world they have got it right. How will Lewis be feeling?

:23:00. > :23:05.Of course he has put the disappointment of yesterday behind

:23:05. > :23:11.him. He is an out-and-out racer he is going to reward the team's

:23:11. > :23:15.disappointment with an attacking drive. With as fans are going to

:23:15. > :23:19.get rewarded with something special this afternoon. Just about may have

:23:19. > :23:23.heard there, or seen any way, two World Champions have left their

:23:23. > :23:27.garages there is another one who has returned to Formula One, Kimi

:23:27. > :23:37.Raikkonen, until now he has let his driving do the talking. Leigh

:23:37. > :23:38.

:23:38. > :23:43.caught up with him.. Straight down the outside. Side by side here.

:23:43. > :23:47.Raikkonen goes for it. Lovely move. It is going to take that second

:23:47. > :23:51.place away. The last time we spoke was tat end of the Bahrain Grand

:23:51. > :23:55.Prix and you seemed in two mind as to whether second was the result

:23:55. > :24:01.you wanted. You seemed to think you could have won that. Can you

:24:01. > :24:06.reflect on second as being a good result? Yes, of course it is good,

:24:06. > :24:12.but not, I think we still could have won it, but it didn't happen,

:24:12. > :24:17.so we had to take the second. It is better than nothing, but it is not

:24:17. > :24:22.as good as the car that came in first. He is going to have a go. He

:24:22. > :24:25.can't make it because Vettel just moves there. You have to make quick

:24:25. > :24:28.decision sometimes it work, sometimes not and this time it was

:24:28. > :24:32.one that didn't work stkpwh. Are you enjoying your second coming

:24:32. > :24:36.back, is it giving you what you came back for? I enjoy the racing,

:24:36. > :24:46.so that is why I came back. I don't really care the other thing, from

:24:46. > :24:47.

:24:47. > :24:52.the first test, with the old car t car felt good. We knew that the

:24:52. > :24:58.point we had a good package on our hands. Can you compare this team to

:24:58. > :25:02.Ferrari or McLaren who it seems to me, much bigger teams, maybe more

:25:02. > :25:07.pressure. I enjoy here, the people are relaxed but they push us haar

:25:07. > :25:17.as they can, but they are more happy, you know. It is not so

:25:17. > :25:23.

:25:23. > :25:29.serious. I mean we do everything together. I would say he is a

:25:29. > :25:34.character, but he is very nice to work with, he is very professional,

:25:34. > :25:40.racing orientated, so maybe this is one of the reasons he does well

:25:40. > :25:48.with his taxpayer? Is your come back going well. Your Sunday

:25:48. > :25:53.results seem strong? You qualify, some days you get the points and

:25:53. > :26:03.that is all you want for the team I don't care if I am qualifying show

:26:03. > :26:08.with my team-mate. If I score, as many points as we can. Some people

:26:08. > :26:12.have to be up there to feel good. For many it makes no difference as

:26:12. > :26:17.long as we find ourself in a good position for Sunday. Is fair to say

:26:17. > :26:23.Lotus aren't employing him for his PR skills. But when you are as good

:26:23. > :26:28.as Kimi Raikkonen that doesn't matter. Pales into insignificance.

:26:28. > :26:32.Michael Schumacher is in the end of another contract and he hasn't

:26:32. > :26:36.achieved anything like what Kimi has done and only in four races, I

:26:36. > :26:39.think he has don a fabulous job for the team. Come and take a look, you

:26:39. > :26:44.can see the sticker. This is the spare front nose for Mark Webber.

:26:44. > :26:48.He will hope he doesn't need to use that. If he does he has knocked off

:26:48. > :26:53.his original. It was a difficult session for Red Bull. 11th for Mark

:26:53. > :26:59.Webber. Bitter-sweet. I think it was a mistake by the team. And Mark

:26:59. > :27:02.has to play his part in that. They underestimated what was going on

:27:02. > :27:06.and didn't perform. Think Vettel is clever in so far as he knows that

:27:06. > :27:09.the results and the points are today. He kept his tyres, don't

:27:09. > :27:14.rule him out to win this race. He could be a dark horse. How did you

:27:14. > :27:19.feel having three cars not run in that final part, or with so much

:27:19. > :27:22.emphasis on the race, is that the way is it going now. They have to

:27:22. > :27:26.look at the regulation, the fans were cheated. Cheated of the teams

:27:26. > :27:31.that didn't go out. You can't blame the teams because the regular

:27:31. > :27:36.layings don't stipulate they have to go out. We need to tighten up on

:27:36. > :27:40.legislation. You know you say about ten times a show they need to look

:27:40. > :27:50.at the regulations. We saw about Lewis, I mean, it is am big use.

:27:50. > :27:52.

:27:52. > :27:56.The rules are ambiguous so let us try and... We are going to go here.

:27:56. > :28:00.The penalty was sever for the crime and that is where I leave it I

:28:00. > :28:04.think he should have been sixth to takeaway the quickest lap, so sixth

:28:04. > :28:08.would have been a fair result. Tenth was the obvious one, I think

:28:08. > :28:13.it is ridiculous. We are getting close to the start of the race. The

:28:13. > :28:18.sun is fighting to come through and David is where he belong, back on a

:28:18. > :28:23.grid in Formula 1, the 13 time race winner can guide us round. What do

:28:23. > :28:29.you see. I am down with the pole man, straight out of the car and

:28:29. > :28:32.talking to speed TV. I want to hang on and we have his, we got his

:28:32. > :28:38.feelings earlier, but let us see if he has his game face on. We are

:28:38. > :28:44.going to hang, I might drop the microphone in here a second. Very

:28:44. > :28:50.tough to get the high performanceer we are, we did our best and we need

:28:50. > :28:55.to continue like that.. Is car is going great. Temperatures lore than

:28:56. > :29:02.we have seen before, you have to be feeling fairly confident. We have a

:29:02. > :29:06.pretty good car on race, I hope so. So, looking forward for this race I

:29:06. > :29:10.think it is going not going to be easy, it is going to be a tough

:29:10. > :29:16.race, the gap is quite close. We are looking forward. A quick one,

:29:16. > :29:21.how are your starts and you have you had to do any extra simulation.

:29:21. > :29:25.The track is clean. So we will see. We need to set the clutch and

:29:25. > :29:29.everything, but we will see. Hopefully we will be the first in

:29:29. > :29:33.the first corner. Heart rate is OK? Nerves coming in. It is OK, at the

:29:33. > :29:37.moment. Great stuff. Well, he does seem calm doesn't he. There is a

:29:37. > :29:42.lot of pressure on these drivers. First pole position and while he

:29:42. > :29:47.probably wants to do, is go and find a quiet place to hang out. Any

:29:47. > :29:50.way, let us take a wee wander. I wanted to see if we could get a

:29:50. > :29:54.word with one of the Lotus drivers because they have the fastest race

:29:54. > :29:59.pace of any of the cars out there on the Friday simulation. So let me

:29:59. > :30:03.just see, we have Romain Grosjean coming to the grid. It might take a

:30:03. > :30:13.moment before he gets out and gets comfortable. Here is Kimi and he is

:30:13. > :30:20.

:30:21. > :30:25.a man of few words. He has been interviewed on the grid when I was

:30:25. > :30:31.a driver but you have got to look into their eyes and try to judge if

:30:31. > :30:41.they are up for it or not. I will try to get myself into the eye line

:30:41. > :30:43.

:30:44. > :30:49.of Roman. I know you have just stepped from the car, but just a

:30:49. > :30:55.quick word. This is what I love about this guy, look at his smile.

:30:55. > :31:04.At the car seems to be working very well. Let's see what we can achieve.

:31:04. > :31:11.The McLaren engineers think it is nip and tuck in terms of their

:31:11. > :31:18.raised base and yours. We need the points so let's see what we can get

:31:18. > :31:23.from the car, but hopefully a good result. The clean side of the grid.

:31:23. > :31:29.Exciting, more stressed than normal, but nothing major. He is pretty

:31:29. > :31:38.chilled, isn't he? It is his 13th Grand Prix. I don't think we will

:31:38. > :31:43.be able to see Kimi Raikkonen. We found out a few years ago it is not

:31:43. > :31:49.a good idea to interview him at the wrong time. We spoke to Sergio

:31:49. > :31:59.earlier today, he seems quite happy with his qualifying. It is unusual

:31:59. > :32:02.

:32:02. > :32:07.to see a Red Bull so far down the grid. We have the Mercedes being

:32:07. > :32:14.pushed in here, as if anyone would have to be warned to get out of the

:32:14. > :32:24.way. Not a lot of steering lock, but let's get the next driver who

:32:24. > :32:24.

:32:25. > :32:31.might be open for a chat. How are you feeling? I think my performance

:32:31. > :32:35.has been good. I was always fighting with Maldonado in practice

:32:35. > :32:45.so I am really positive for today. Can you expect to get to the

:32:45. > :32:49.podium? I think we definitely have good pace, and we have less

:32:49. > :32:56.degradation of the tyre so we have to be consistent, try to manage the

:32:56. > :33:05.tyre. I am looking forward to seeing you on the start. I will

:33:05. > :33:14.expect some action on turn one. are in the middle position, we are

:33:14. > :33:19.hoping for something very special. Not everyone is taking a risk.

:33:19. > :33:25.wish you good luck. Mark Webber was a little bit frustrated with the

:33:25. > :33:31.call not to run up the second part of qualifying. We are hearing he is

:33:31. > :33:37.not on the grid. Christian Horner is on the grid. Mark was

:33:37. > :33:43.disappointed with the call not to run yesterday. Fully focused today?

:33:43. > :33:50.Having looked at where he is with his tyres, his mood improved

:33:50. > :33:58.dramatically. As we can see in modern Formula One, tyre usage is

:33:58. > :34:08.critical so hopefully we can have a good run. The others are begging

:34:08. > :34:09.

:34:09. > :34:15.you about three-tenths, is that something you can overcome? --

:34:15. > :34:20.pegging year. We think we are all right. This year it is 10 degrees

:34:20. > :34:25.cooler, less wind, how will that affect things? We ran pretty well

:34:25. > :34:30.on Friday, the drivers are happy with the car. If we can make the

:34:30. > :34:36.right strategic calls, hopefully we can make progress. As you said,

:34:36. > :34:44.less wind, which is always a good thing, so good luck. We are Jenson

:34:44. > :34:49.Button by is car here. I think he might have gone for a toilet break.

:34:50. > :34:55.I think I might hand back to Jake if I don't see anyone else. Am my

:34:55. > :35:05.walking too fast for you? As you saw in the build up, I can be quite

:35:05. > :35:06.

:35:06. > :35:15.quick out of the blocks! Nico Rosberg around? I think he has gone

:35:15. > :35:20.to the toilet as well. Jake, I am going to hand back to you.

:35:20. > :35:28.Thank you. What was interesting was that David had to walk past quite a

:35:28. > :35:34.lot of cars before he got to the Red Bulls, McLarens. None of those

:35:34. > :35:38.in the top five. To us the most remarkable qualifying yesterday,

:35:38. > :35:43.added to by the demise of Lewis Hamilton. Anything can happen in

:35:43. > :35:48.this race. It is easy to sit back and say there is a fair chance he

:35:48. > :35:53.will win. No one has a clue what will happen and that is what is

:35:53. > :36:00.great about the season this year. The part from the odd microphone

:36:00. > :36:09.technique issue, I thought it was a sterling effort. Paul di Resta is

:36:09. > :36:15.done there - shall I take we wander down there?

:36:15. > :36:20.It is unusual to see a racing driver sitting on the pit. What are

:36:20. > :36:26.you doing here? Just talking to the engineer. I think it was better to

:36:26. > :36:35.stay out of the way. We seem relatively happy going into the

:36:35. > :36:41.grid. Are there more upgrades to come through? The have clearly not

:36:41. > :36:45.been enough because some of our recent competitors like Williams

:36:45. > :36:50.are on pole position. I don't think we have maximised what we have got.

:36:50. > :36:58.It will take some analysing after this weekend ahead of Monaco but we

:36:58. > :37:05.are in a reasonable position. Expectations? At I always say that

:37:05. > :37:09.any points here would be a big benefit to us. Whether that is in

:37:09. > :37:19.ninth or sixth position like in Bahrain, that would be fine. He it

:37:19. > :37:22.

:37:22. > :37:25.is rumoured Paul di Resta is wanted by a Williams.

:37:25. > :37:30.We have got plenty more build up to come, but take a quick look at how

:37:30. > :37:38.you can enjoy the action this weekend on the BBC and our Formula

:37:38. > :37:43.One coverage. This is fascinating, this driver tracker. It shows when

:37:43. > :37:48.people will be released into the traffic. You can also ride on board

:37:48. > :37:57.with various drivers. The pit lane feed is remarkable, you can hear

:37:57. > :38:01.them as they make their way down the track. There is plenty of news

:38:01. > :38:06.happening on the BBC Sport website and, if you miss anything on the

:38:06. > :38:10.next seven days, you can check it out with the iPlayer. Tell us about

:38:10. > :38:15.the Williams team, how will they feel having Maldonado on the front

:38:15. > :38:19.of the grid? He euphoric from yesterday, but at this moment in

:38:19. > :38:25.time they wished, I believe, the result didn't change yesterday.

:38:25. > :38:30.They would feel happier in second place than pole position. The

:38:30. > :38:33.stress, the pain of having to endure the first corner, and

:38:33. > :38:39.traditionally people who have had their first pole position seldom

:38:39. > :38:46.hang on to it during the race. From that point of view, mixed emotions,

:38:46. > :38:51.but for Frank on his 70th birthday, it is brilliant for him. There is

:38:51. > :39:01.no greater name in the history of our sport. Not so great for Bruno

:39:01. > :39:02.

:39:02. > :39:09.Senna because he knows Williams is capable of this kind of performance.

:39:09. > :39:19.Barcelona 2012, and once again an unpredictable qualifying session,

:39:19. > :39:20.

:39:20. > :39:27.we are on board with pole position. Down into third gear for turn two,

:39:27. > :39:30.then flat roof turn 3. Using all of the track as he runs wide. Heavy

:39:30. > :39:39.the track as he runs wide. Heavy entry speed, then down to third

:39:39. > :39:47.gear, biting at the wheel. A tricky job down into turn 5. Wide on the

:39:47. > :39:57.apex but snooze on the power. It is the tricky uphill left-hander into

:39:57. > :39:57.

:39:57. > :40:02.turn 7. A fifth gear corner taking an apex speed of 160 mph. A brake

:40:02. > :40:10.balance adjustment as he spots the heaviest part of the track, running

:40:10. > :40:16.wide, but a great recovery on exit. Oversteer on the entry phase here,

:40:16. > :40:25.snooze on the acceleration as he runs into the last phase of the

:40:25. > :40:35.latter. He uses any leftover KERS, oversteer through the last turn,

:40:35. > :40:42.

:40:42. > :40:48.up in pole position. This is the Circuit de Catalunya. We have

:40:48. > :40:52.raised here since 1991, and in 10 of the last 11 races the man on

:40:53. > :40:57.pole position has gone on to win. They are sure Maldonado will feel

:40:57. > :41:07.the same, that should not be repeated. It will be a daunting day

:41:07. > :41:11.for him. His mirrors will be full of red things like Lotus cars, but

:41:11. > :41:16.I was so impressed with him in the early races this year. He could

:41:16. > :41:25.really come of age and muscle his way through to the front. If he can

:41:25. > :41:30.make it through the first lap, it will be a major job done. There is

:41:30. > :41:36.Christiansen, he is on the race Stuart's panel this weekend, maybe

:41:36. > :41:40.you could tell him you don't agree with his decision. He is a top guy.

:41:40. > :41:44.In his defence, this would be a technical decision, not the

:41:44. > :41:50.sporting one so he would have had very little to do with it. He would

:41:50. > :41:56.have been sitting on the panel but his input would has been less in

:41:56. > :42:01.that decision. If you can see the big pack lining up on the grid.

:42:01. > :42:04.Lewis Hamilton is right at the back after an infringement in qualifying.

:42:04. > :42:09.Here we are at in the paddock, you can see that is busy building up to

:42:09. > :42:17.the race, but a quick mention of Fernando Alonso who is here in

:42:17. > :42:22.Spain and he will be looking to use his DRS to get past Maldonado. On

:42:22. > :42:27.average, he has made three places at each race start so he may not

:42:27. > :42:31.even need to activated. One thing is for sure - we saw the electric

:42:31. > :42:35.start he had last year straight into the lead, and I think I

:42:35. > :42:40.presented him with the best start of the season last year so I'm sure

:42:40. > :42:44.he will be trying to emulate that. What he has done for Spain is

:42:44. > :42:48.remarkable because he has gathered the momentum and made Formula One

:42:48. > :42:54.popular. What about Michael Schumacher - it is his worst ever

:42:54. > :42:59.season start in Formula One. What does he need to do today? The one

:42:59. > :43:05.thing he has in his favour is this is a much better car. The people

:43:05. > :43:09.around him have made it much more drivable. We heard Michael arguing

:43:09. > :43:15.about the tyres and his disappointment in them, but this is

:43:15. > :43:21.not just the spot for drivers, it is for the fans and everyone else.

:43:21. > :43:26.Michael is not bigger than the show. Here is the man looking to do the

:43:26. > :43:33.business for Ferrari. Who can win this Grand Prix? If I have a

:43:33. > :43:37.sneaking feeling after the last race in Bahrain that Sebastian

:43:37. > :43:47.Vettel can tick a lot of the boxes that makes it possible to win a

:43:47. > :43:53.Grand Prix so I would go for him. Fernando can hang in there?

:43:53. > :43:57.Lotus will be a big surprise. the Sauber further back, and Lewis

:43:57. > :44:02.Hamilton looking to fight from the back of the grid. Time for the

:44:02. > :44:06.Spanish Grand Prix live and in high-definition. So far, four

:44:06. > :44:12.different teams have taken the first four wins of the Year. The

:44:12. > :44:22.last time that happened was in 1983, and in raised five the pattern

:44:22. > :44:48.

:44:48. > :44:58.crosses the line, an absolutely magnificent victory. Sebastian

:44:58. > :45:12.

:45:13. > :45:17.Vettel, the first Red Bull win of from Barcelona is buzzing. With

:45:17. > :45:23.anticipation ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso none

:45:23. > :45:27.starts up front and we have a topsy-turvy grid. This is one

:45:27. > :45:31.quarter distance and the first European event of 2012, on a

:45:31. > :45:38.circuit that is so familiar to the team, from painstaking hours of

:45:39. > :45:45.testing here. A track lent of 2.89 miles or 4.65 kilometres. Some 16

:45:45. > :45:48.turns blending high speed corners with stop start sections and a

:45:49. > :45:54.decent straight that is all Mansell and Senna going wheel-to-wheel.

:45:54. > :45:59.That is where the drag reduction is in for this race and its most

:45:59. > :46:02.likely overtaking spot. There hasn't been a wet race here since

:46:02. > :46:06.1996, when Michael Schumacher took his first win for Ferrari, but we

:46:06. > :46:10.have got cloud cover over the track and that has cooled things down a

:46:10. > :46:14.bit. It hasn't cooled the passion of the Spanish fans, with their

:46:14. > :46:19.national hero up front but we could see a change in performance of some

:46:19. > :46:23.of the cars as they try to get the best out of the tyres, and that is

:46:23. > :46:28.something to be watching out for. It S the thing we are trying to

:46:28. > :46:32.understand is who has the handle on the constant change of track

:46:32. > :46:36.temperature, and the effect that has on the way the tyres are

:46:36. > :46:39.performing. Just, when I looked attract temperature before I came

:46:39. > :46:45.up to the box it was 10 degrees cooler than qualifying yesterday,

:46:45. > :46:47.so we will keep you updated. That has a massive effect on the

:46:47. > :46:51.performance. If you remember back to China, when Nico Rosberg, the

:46:51. > :46:55.track conditions changed by two or three degrees, suddenly he was the

:46:55. > :47:01.man on the move in qualifying and all dominant in the race. Williams

:47:01. > :47:08.are sitting on pole position, maybe not on lap team merit but on car

:47:08. > :47:14.speed. Can they convert this? Can they manage their tyres? Lotus are

:47:14. > :47:23.the team that have the underlying race pace. The air temperature's

:47:23. > :47:26.You have head wind now and you have... So, yes, wind picking up.

:47:26. > :47:29.Track temperature 32 degrees. Down on what we saw in qualifying

:47:29. > :47:34.yesterday. Williams starting on pole position of course, but the

:47:34. > :47:38.Lotus cars looking very fast. Romain Grosjean starting in third

:47:38. > :47:43.place on the grid. Second time he started third so far in 2012. In

:47:43. > :47:49.Australia he Saturdayed in the same place but without out in an

:47:49. > :47:54.accident with Pastor Maldonado, the guy who starts from pole position.

:47:54. > :47:57.Alonso first front row since Canada 2011. He has won here before in his

:47:57. > :48:01.World Championship winning year, that was the second title year,

:48:01. > :48:06.2006. Alonso will be looking for a quick get away, and a good run down

:48:06. > :48:10.to the first corner to try and get ahead of Pastor Maldonado., So this

:48:10. > :48:20.is how the grid lines up. It is Venezuela's Pastor Maldonado who

:48:20. > :48:20.

:48:20. > :49:06.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 46 seconds

:49:06. > :49:13.starts on pole position for with his qualifying performance,

:49:13. > :49:22.now we have to ask the question, how fast will he be? 33 degrees,

:49:22. > :49:28.but obviously with the cloud cover, that keeps dropping. It is down to

:49:28. > :49:31.round 29 with the cloud covering the sun. That makes a massive

:49:31. > :49:34.difference. Engines firing up. For Pastor Maldonado I wonder how he

:49:34. > :49:39.feels for the first time ever he will lead the cars round on this

:49:39. > :49:43.formation lap, and looking at that grid, on the left hand side you

:49:43. > :49:53.have Alonso and Raikkonen, on the right hand side as we look from the

:49:53. > :49:54.

:49:54. > :49:56.front, you have Maldonado and gross gene. Between Maldonado and gross

:49:56. > :50:00.gene many starts. Experience whether it counts for anything,

:50:00. > :50:04.when they launch from the box, of the starting position, it remains

:50:04. > :50:07.to be seen. The left hand side of the track, which is the right hand

:50:07. > :50:13.side if you look the screen is worth about one place, it is

:50:13. > :50:18.reckoned by the engineers. They show know. We should expect to see

:50:18. > :50:21.everyone on the right hand side outlaunching the cars on the right

:50:22. > :50:25.hand side. Fernando Alonso went from fourth to leading this Grand

:50:25. > :50:31.Prix from the right hand side of the track. Just to show the

:50:31. > :50:34.engineers aren't always right, but it is going to be an electric run

:50:34. > :50:39.down. It is 700 metres to the first one. The tyres Pirelli have brought

:50:39. > :50:44.here are the soft and hard, so there is a gap, no medium being

:50:44. > :50:48.used. It is the yellow wall tire tyre and a silver wall tyre. It is

:50:48. > :50:52.not as big a gap as last year. Bear in mind that the championship

:50:52. > :50:55.leader Sebastian Vettel starts down in century place for this race.

:50:55. > :50:59.Lewis Hamilton, who is second in the point, starting all the way

:50:59. > :51:04.down at the back. Mark Webber not having a great qualifier, so the

:51:04. > :51:08.only guy who has won a race who is up front is Fernando Alonso, he

:51:09. > :51:12.start tons front row of the grid. What we heard Jenson Button doing,

:51:12. > :51:15.if it sounded like he was short shifting up through the gear, you

:51:15. > :51:22.are right, he was. That is because they have to synchronise the

:51:22. > :51:26.gearbox. They have seamless shifts, they engage the next gear while

:51:26. > :51:29.using the gear they are using. He will get information from his

:51:29. > :51:32.engineer to set any adjustments that are are needed for the clutch

:51:32. > :51:37.now they find out how it is reacting off the start. What can

:51:37. > :51:43.you tell us on the option, what are we looking at in terms of pit stops.

:51:43. > :51:48.It is the fastest tyre, you get best traction and jump a couple of

:51:48. > :51:53.place, you have to look at three stops. Whether you use option

:51:53. > :51:58.option soft or hard. It is down to how the car uses it. Options are

:51:58. > :52:06.good for 12-15 laps, whereas the hard are good for 18-206789 it

:52:06. > :52:11.depend how the car is using them. Every car is on option. So there we

:52:11. > :52:15.are, all the cars on the option t softer of the two tyre, that is to

:52:16. > :52:20.help them get off the line. We will see how many laps they manage with

:52:20. > :52:23.their full tank of fuel onboard the car, making the car much heavier

:52:23. > :52:27.than it was when they last drove it in qualifying there is confirmation,

:52:27. > :52:34.soft tyre on all the top 12. In fact on all the cars that are

:52:34. > :52:39.lining up on the grid right now. So, Maldonado taking his first ever

:52:39. > :52:45.pole position, Alonso alongside him. The two Lotuss up there. Perez, the

:52:45. > :52:55.Mexican, Rosberg, Vettel in century. Kobayashi ninth. Button 109

:52:55. > :53:07.

:53:07. > :53:17.helmet of Lewis Hamilton, how far can he get in the early stages,

:53:17. > :53:18.

:53:18. > :53:23.will he get into the points? Let's Williams versus Ferrari. Alonso has

:53:23. > :53:26.a good start from the inside. Alonso goes wheel-to-wheel, the

:53:26. > :53:29.Lotus is behind. Kimi Raikkonen is channelling on outside. Alonso

:53:29. > :53:33.takes the lead into the first corner. Maldonado is trying to stay

:53:33. > :53:39.with him. No, he can't. Into second place, Raikkonen is third. Gross

:53:39. > :53:44.gene is fourth. He has been passed by Perez. Perriz slides. He has a

:53:44. > :53:50.puncture. He has been hit Perez is in trouble. He has been clipped.

:53:50. > :53:54.Got a puncture and runs wide. A fantastic start. Rosberg has gone

:53:54. > :53:58.past gross gene. Lamb in the background making places. Jenson

:53:58. > :54:03.Button trying to do likewise. Vettel trying to squeeze down the

:54:03. > :54:06.inside. He does so, we will keep an eye on where Hamilton. He is up to

:54:06. > :54:10.19th onboard with Mark Webber. Battling away. Listen to the crowd.

:54:10. > :54:15.As Alonso leads this race T crowd going crazy. Webber trying to go

:54:15. > :54:21.all the way round the Force India and trying to get past. Could he do

:54:21. > :54:27.it? I'm not sure. Didn't manage on that one. Massa has made up a lot

:54:27. > :54:31.of ground. Vettel comes through. There is Button. Kobayashi and look

:54:31. > :54:35.at Massa, he has made up places. Webber on the outside of the Force

:54:35. > :54:39.India makes it stick as they come through 11. He worked hard for that

:54:39. > :54:44.place. But Mark Webber has gone up one place and it is showing, that

:54:44. > :54:51.will be 13th. Look at this start from Fernando Alonso. Beautiful get

:54:51. > :54:54.away and a great first lap for the Maestro, who has had a race victory

:54:54. > :54:59.this year. Now the improvement it is a they have made to Ferrari seem

:54:59. > :55:06.to be working. Look at him getting away from Maldonado, Raikkonen,

:55:06. > :55:11.Rosberg in a solid fourth place. Schumacher has a look. The

:55:11. > :55:15.positions stay the same. He is in sixth.? In the background we have

:55:15. > :55:18.Sebastian Vettel, he ran very wide on the last corner, going right out

:55:18. > :55:22.on the artificial grass. You can see how much he dropped back from

:55:22. > :55:27.the back of Schumacher. He wants to be working to get within that one

:55:27. > :55:31.second window for the end of lap two that enables the DRS to work.

:55:31. > :55:36.We have Perez with that left require tyre. We will hope to get a

:55:36. > :55:41.replay. Some were through turn one and two and what was a great

:55:41. > :55:48.qualifying position P5 has turned into last place. Lewis Hamilton is

:55:48. > :55:52.209 but Felipe Massa is 11th. Massa has had a storming lap. You can see

:55:52. > :55:57.how he goes through ahead of Mark Webber. Watch out for Hamilton. He

:55:57. > :56:01.is further back. He is behind Senna so he has made another place. I

:56:01. > :56:07.think he might have gained one on this lap. Mark Webber tucked in

:56:07. > :56:13.behind Felipe Massa here. Think Hamilton has got himself ahead of

:56:13. > :56:17.Petrov. That was Charles Pic and he is lucky to be missed there. That

:56:17. > :56:22.won't have done his tyres any good there. The option tyre when you

:56:22. > :56:28.have 160 key -- kilos, that was a Force India going through 13 and

:56:28. > :56:31.rejoining with the leaders, putting a smile on the Spanish faces. And

:56:31. > :56:35.running down into turn one, he is not getting away from Maldonado. At

:56:35. > :56:39.this stage it is about managing the tyre. We expect them to be anywhere

:56:39. > :56:44.in round lap ten and it will be those who can take the last little

:56:44. > :56:48.bit out of this option tyre when the cars are heavy that will stand

:56:48. > :56:51.the best advantage. We heard that Perez has gone for the harder tyre,

:56:51. > :56:55.that makes him the only carton prime tyre. That is valuable

:56:55. > :56:59.information for the rest of the grid. They will watch his pace

:56:59. > :57:04.relative to his team-mate Kobayashi. So Maldonado closed the gap to

:57:04. > :57:06.Alonso there is Senna and it is Senna versus Hamilton. That is for

:57:06. > :57:10.17th place as Hamilton trying to gain as much ground as possible.

:57:10. > :57:14.You are onboard with the British driver as he tries to make up as

:57:14. > :57:19.much ground in the early laps as he can. Senna just ahead who struggled

:57:19. > :57:23.in qualifying. Had a spin and he is having a look on the inside here,

:57:23. > :57:27.overtakes there. He is through and he has gained another position, he

:57:27. > :57:32.is through into 17th place. A was a neat move. That was a fantastic

:57:32. > :57:36.move. As we get a replay of the start. The down side of course for,

:57:36. > :57:40.is that one of the slow Toro Rosso getting passed immediately by Nico

:57:40. > :57:47.Hulkenberg in the force India let us look out for the contact with

:57:47. > :57:52.Perez. He is on the outside. Where does that clip come? Oh.. It is

:57:52. > :57:57.with one of the Lotuss? Onboard with Alonso. His initial get away

:57:57. > :58:00.was better. The start thrav was similar with the Williams car. --

:58:01. > :58:04.thereafter. They are pegged for straight line speed a as they run

:58:04. > :58:07.down into the first corner. This is the view that Fernando Alonso had

:58:07. > :58:12.this time last year. End of the first corner, clear track. He did

:58:12. > :58:16.it from fourth last year this was the view from onboard Jenson

:58:16. > :58:20.Button's car. Michael Schumacher was on the right. Another one who

:58:20. > :58:26.made a good start was Jean-Eric Vergne. He managed to make up a lot

:58:26. > :58:30.of ground. Where was this contact with the Sauber? Difficult to see.

:58:30. > :58:35.I think it came with Romain Grosjean in the Lotus. I think it

:58:35. > :58:39.came at the last part of turn two. He was in among that battle. So it

:58:39. > :58:45.just seemed to take the, you can see him rejoining in front of

:58:45. > :58:50.Hamilton. A great evasive action from Hamilton. May be maybe

:58:50. > :58:55.unsurprisingly we have Sergio Perez who has gone purple. That makes him

:58:55. > :59:00.the fastest man on the track. One second than the leader. So those

:59:00. > :59:05.piem tyres working fine, in the heat of Barcelona. -- prime. So the

:59:05. > :59:11.harder tyre looking good despite it not being as hot as qualifying.

:59:11. > :59:15.Felipe Massa in 11th place, a very good start. Good get away, Perez

:59:15. > :59:19.with that 1.29.5. That will make a few teams it is up and take notice.

:59:19. > :59:25.Seeing that lap team from Perez, does that affect the strat wri for

:59:25. > :59:30.the others? It normally gives a good indication, how long the tyres

:59:30. > :59:33.lasted. I think Perez's hard tyre would have been a new set. He is

:59:33. > :59:38.giving everybody a good warning on what can happen. It will make it

:59:38. > :59:43.easier for them to make decisions. Fernando Alonso leads this race

:59:43. > :59:48.from Maldonado, Raikkonen, you have a good battle here. Fastest car --

:59:48. > :59:51.let's pass this car in front, we are in the points. Massa being

:59:51. > :59:57.encouraged to pass Jean-Eric Vergne. The Frenchman has had a couple of

:59:57. > :00:02.good opening laps and he has moved up from 14th to be running in tenth,

:00:02. > :00:06.but behind Massa is still Mark Webber, a little lock up but Vergne

:00:07. > :00:16.was a touch too wide through turn four, hasn't really made too much

:00:17. > :00:18.

:00:18. > :00:24.lock up going down to turn five, you are not only managing the car

:00:24. > :00:31.when it is heavy with fuel but in the air, the downforce is being

:00:31. > :00:41.robbed from his car, so it means it will slide more in the corners, but

:00:41. > :00:41.

:00:41. > :00:46.your engine this leads -- your engine overheats. It is so

:00:46. > :00:50.difficult for the drivers to judge the weight and approach of the car

:00:50. > :00:56.when they are running seven seconds slower than they ran in qualifying.

:00:56. > :01:02.Up front, Alonso and Maldonado are pulling away Abed from Kimi

:01:02. > :01:12.Raikkonen. -- a bit. Hamilton has gained another place, going past

:01:12. > :01:13.

:01:13. > :01:23.Kovalainen. And Felipe Massa etc. Chases after Jean Eric Byrne. In --

:01:23. > :01:26.

:01:26. > :01:32.Felipe Massa chases after John Eric group, then Felipe Massa in the

:01:32. > :01:36.Ferrari. Mark Webber must be feeling very frustrated. Just

:01:36. > :01:41.looking at the gap, you have Maldonado just over a second behind

:01:41. > :01:51.Alonso. He said before the show, he would be going aggressive, he wants

:01:51. > :02:02.

:02:02. > :02:07.the same time, he said, no surprise there. The car is trying to

:02:07. > :02:12.maintain a balance on all of the tyres. I think Raikkonen is just

:02:12. > :02:18.playing a longer game, managing his tyres. He is not pushing up into

:02:19. > :02:24.the back of Maldonado. We can see how patient they have to be at this

:02:24. > :02:34.stage, opening the throttle gently. The Pirelli tyres are very

:02:34. > :02:34.

:02:34. > :02:39.sensitive to any over spin. Jenson Button locking up of. Kobayashi is

:02:39. > :02:44.in ninth place, Jenson Button ahead of him. A Fernando Alonso with a

:02:44. > :02:50.1.5 second lead. Mark Webber is in a, a very early stop. Which tyres

:02:50. > :02:56.are they putting him on to? It looks like it is the harder tyre.

:02:56. > :02:59.That is a very early stop at the end of lap number six. We thought

:02:59. > :03:03.lap ten there would be the bulk of when the most of the stops would

:03:03. > :03:13.happen, so that is about getting Mark bbcbreakfast@bbc.co.uk in to

:03:13. > :03:20.

:03:20. > :03:24.clean air. The this could be inspired by Red Bull, now he can

:03:24. > :03:27.manage is tyres whilst getting the maximum downforce. Obviously not at

:03:27. > :03:33.this point when he is running behind HRT but when he starts

:03:33. > :03:39.keirin them. That was Karthikeyan being passed by Charles Pic, who

:03:39. > :03:44.Mark Webber will come up against the next. Further up the road is

:03:44. > :03:51.Romain Grosjean in the Lotus as they come past the peak packed

:03:51. > :03:57.grandstand on the slower section of track. -- the big impact. I am

:03:57. > :04:03.hearing that Perez was clipped by Grosjean. It doesn't look like he

:04:03. > :04:10.sustained any damage and Vettel is in as well, the drivers getting

:04:10. > :04:12.some clean air. And getting the hard of the tyres. Perez is still

:04:12. > :04:19.lapping fast on the hard tyres that he went to straight after that

:04:19. > :04:29.puncture. Sebastian Vettel in theory should come out of Mark

:04:29. > :04:31.

:04:31. > :04:35.Webber. -- in front of Mark Webber. He has three sets of those hard

:04:35. > :04:41.tyres available this afternoon. he could be in good shape. He comes

:04:41. > :04:46.out ahead of Timo Glock so he won't be held up like Mark Webber was on

:04:46. > :04:53.that out-lap. That should making -- let him and make the most of those

:04:53. > :04:57.new tyres immediately. You have got to use the performance of the new

:04:57. > :05:06.tyres. We can see a replay of Mark Webber being surprised had -- and

:05:06. > :05:10.just how early the HRT breaks for the corner. -- brakes for the

:05:10. > :05:15.corner. There could have been costly for Mark Webber. Not only

:05:15. > :05:21.could he have lost his front wing but he has locked up a long way

:05:21. > :05:31.into Turn five. I Fernando Alonso continues to lead. -- Fernando

:05:31. > :05:36.

:05:36. > :05:41.of pace we are seeing it, are you impressed that the race pace?

:05:41. > :05:50.and the consistency is pretty good, they have only lost three or four-

:05:50. > :05:55.tenths. That is Kobayashi into the pits. Presumably he is going for

:05:55. > :05:59.the hard tyres as well. A little bit slow on the front end, they

:05:59. > :06:04.didn't get the front down as quickly. It is usually the rear

:06:04. > :06:09.that is the limiting factor but it was a problem on the front. He has

:06:09. > :06:15.come out ahead of Mark Webber so he has not lost a position relative to

:06:15. > :06:21.Webber. Eight laps have been completed by the race leader out of

:06:21. > :06:24.66 here in Barcelona, Alonso leads by 1.5 seconds. Kimi Raikkonen in

:06:25. > :06:33.the Lotus is still in bed. Lewis Hamilton is trying to make it more

:06:33. > :06:38.ground. -- Kimi Raikkonen in the Lotus is still in third. A lot of

:06:38. > :06:44.locking up from Hamilton at this stage. But Force India goes wide

:06:44. > :06:51.through nine, so this will be an easy pass. Just showing how

:06:51. > :06:54.difficult it is for the drivers. I won't be surprised to see a Force

:06:54. > :07:01.India coming in any time soon. A Mercedes are coming out of the pit

:07:01. > :07:08.lane, McLaren are coming out, we have got Lotus out. Hamilton now a

:07:08. > :07:18.been to 12th position. He is only two spots of getting in the points.

:07:18. > :07:21.

:07:21. > :07:28.comes in to put a hard tyres on. Nico Rosberg in the same time. Paul

:07:28. > :07:33.di Resta in as well. And both of them quite close together there.

:07:33. > :07:38.Let's see where Nico Rosberg comes out, just in front of the Caterham.

:07:38. > :07:43.But the McLaren has come out behind the Sebastian Vettel. No real

:07:43. > :07:50.change there. Kobayashi, he has got Timo Glock, who has not been into

:07:50. > :08:00.the pits yet been the Marussia. Behind him his Mark Webber --

:08:00. > :08:02.

:08:02. > :08:07.the Nico Hulkenberg, it was an error by Hulkenberg. It is not

:08:07. > :08:16.often you see someone running wide at 109. It is a bit bumpy sometimes

:08:16. > :08:21.but it was like Hulkenberg was scared off the track. That's what

:08:22. > :08:28.they used to say about Ayrton Senna, the track just opened up. TEAM

:08:28. > :08:36.RADIO: We are currently P8, you are doing their cracking job. In comes

:08:36. > :08:40.the race leader. This is a crucial stage. Great pit stop by Ferrari,

:08:40. > :08:49.they have consistently been one of the fastest teams in the pits this

:08:49. > :08:55.year. That is a fantastic pit stop from Ferrari. It was under three

:08:55. > :09:00.seconds for the wheel change. Grosjean also in and back out, so

:09:00. > :09:04.was Michael Schumacher, so quite a few pit stops taking place.

:09:04. > :09:10.Grosjean comes back out behind Nico Rosberg. Schumacher is coming out

:09:10. > :09:15.just in front of Sebastian Vettel. Bruno Senna still going without

:09:15. > :09:21.having stopped in 12th place. Maldonado now leads the race and a

:09:21. > :09:25.crucial couple of laps for Pastor Maldonado, to see what kind of pace

:09:25. > :09:32.he can achieve on the tyres. Will Fernando Alonso gain the edge

:09:32. > :09:36.having had a pit stop? Bruno Senna was disappointed in qualifying

:09:36. > :09:40.yesterday but he has put in some strong racing performances this

:09:40. > :09:50.year. I wonder if he will go for a to stop, whereas the others are

:09:50. > :09:51.

:09:51. > :09:56.going for a minimum of three. -- two-stop. We had different tyre

:09:56. > :10:02.compounds in use last year, so different numbers of pit-stops.

:10:03. > :10:06.think Maldonado is coming in. His last lap was a 30.8, two-tenths

:10:06. > :10:16.slower than Alonso on the previous lap, so he was getting diminishing

:10:16. > :10:22.

:10:22. > :10:27.place. So the top three have all stopped. Let's see where they can

:10:27. > :10:31.out relative to Fernando Alonso. has gone through and I think he has

:10:31. > :10:37.opened out slightly in that phase of the pit stops. Nico Rosberg

:10:37. > :10:42.trying to get past Pro-Tech -- Bruno Senna. Grosjean has the luck.

:10:42. > :10:46.Are they going to touch? Definite contact, something was flying up in

:10:46. > :10:49.the air. It looked like it might have been coming off the Williams

:10:49. > :10:58.but aggressive stop from Grosjean and he has got away with it this

:10:58. > :11:01.time. -- aggressive stuff. It looks as if Bruno Senna is definitely

:11:01. > :11:10.struggling at this stage and he hasn't stopped so he must be coming

:11:10. > :11:14.in his lap. Michael Schumacher losing valuable time behind the

:11:14. > :11:22.Williams but they have the favour of the car that has the best chance

:11:22. > :11:27.of winning. Schumacher is going to have the word for it, as you say.

:11:27. > :11:33.Into 109, Schumacher dropping away a fraction due to a loss of

:11:33. > :11:39.downforce -- into turn the ninth. TEAM RADIO: We are currently P4, we

:11:39. > :11:47.need a different strategy. Hamilton is definitely climbing up the

:11:47. > :11:51.leaderboard at the moment. Fernando Alonso is the race leader,

:11:51. > :11:55.Maldonado is 3.4 seconds behind. Raikkonen another 3.6 seconds back,

:11:55. > :12:00.so the Ferrari has really worked this pit-stop section of the race

:12:00. > :12:04.well. Here we have a replay, Grosjean sees the space and Bruno

:12:04. > :12:09.Senna gets some space and that might be a flick off the front of

:12:09. > :12:19.the Lotus car. I think that is part of that part of the end plate of

:12:19. > :12:24.the Lotus. It is Schumacher. He is off. I suspected there was a coming

:12:24. > :12:30.together between Schumacher and Bruno Senna at 101. That is a shake

:12:30. > :12:35.of the head and it tells us all -- at turn one. That is an expensive

:12:35. > :12:40.the steering wheel. He is obviously frustrated at what has happened,

:12:40. > :12:47.they left Bruno Senna out on those old tyres and he hadn't pitted and

:12:47. > :12:53.Schumacher had fresh tyres. Schumacher, his worst start to any

:12:53. > :12:58.Grand Prix season and it just keeps getting worse. A track on which he

:12:58. > :13:02.has had six victories in the past. But look at the damage to the back

:13:03. > :13:08.of the Williams, that tells a story. Hopefully, we might get the chance

:13:08. > :13:12.to find out what has happened. It is race over for Bruno Senna but

:13:12. > :13:19.there are other car is in a strong second place. Fernando Alonso leads

:13:19. > :13:24.from Maldonado and Hamilton and Raikkonen. Michael, it looks like

:13:24. > :13:30.you hit the car in front. Do we think that the Bruno Senna was

:13:30. > :13:35.moving in that braking area? I don't think so, I think Michael was

:13:35. > :13:44.just caught out by Ohio -- how early Bruno Senna was having to

:13:44. > :13:49.brake in to turn one. It is more of a mistake made, it didn't look too

:13:49. > :13:52.crazy what Bruno Senna was doing. I just want to come back to the point

:13:52. > :13:57.we had from Lewis Hamilton's Engineer, they might make a new

:13:57. > :14:03.strategy work. He is in fourth place, so I would suggest he is

:14:03. > :14:09.going to do their two-stop. Gary, let's get your thought on that, how

:14:09. > :14:13.much further before he stops? No, we will just to check what is

:14:13. > :14:19.happening with Bruno Senna first, just climbing out at the corner

:14:19. > :14:26.where he can make it back. That is such a shame for him. We will

:14:26. > :14:32.probably get the different stories of the same version of events. We

:14:32. > :14:35.have seen it before with Schumacher. I would like to see another angle

:14:36. > :14:45.before we put it on Michael. This is the Grosjean incident where he

:14:45. > :14:51.goes down the inside of Bruno Senna. TEAM RADIO: Sorry about that,

:14:51. > :14:59.Michael, we will look into this. Let's just wait and see that a few

:14:59. > :15:09.more times before we put that banner. Letters rejoin the action.

:15:09. > :15:10.

:15:10. > :15:15.tried to pull away. So, they have made changes there within McLaren

:15:15. > :15:20.for the pit stops but if the green light came on which I presume it

:15:20. > :15:24.did it looks like a wheel gun has been left we need to get another

:15:24. > :15:30.replay of that. That would have cost him a bit of time. He has gone

:15:30. > :15:33.back on the hard tyres, so going on to that new set of primes. He has

:15:33. > :15:38.dropped back behind Nico Hulkenberg, all the stop wasn't slow as it

:15:38. > :15:44.might have been. Take another look. Is that front wheel that bounced or

:15:44. > :15:48.the rear wheel? It is difficult. It's the rear. It caught the rear

:15:48. > :15:55.wheel. They haven't got it out of way. That won't have done any

:15:55. > :16:01.damage. The cars take a lot of load. So that was a low speed bump.

:16:01. > :16:04.us get reaction from Eddie. What do you think on that Schumacher-Senna

:16:04. > :16:08.incident? I think the stewards will be busy today. That was

:16:08. > :16:12.uncharacteristic, I I know he has done it before but Michael

:16:12. > :16:18.Schumacher made a mess of that, ill-judged, I think you know Senna

:16:18. > :16:23.was a passenger, he is blameless, I think there will be a penalty

:16:23. > :16:28.dished out the Michael. Possibly even for Monaco. We have a battle

:16:28. > :16:32.here between Romain Grosjean and Nico Rosberg this is over fifth

:16:32. > :16:36.position. Hamilton is fourth. He mated his pit stop. Let us remind

:16:36. > :16:41.you Fernando Alonso leads this race. Here comes Romain Grosjean and he

:16:41. > :16:45.is going down the outsiefpltd used the DRS and that was

:16:45. > :16:51.straightforward. He takes fourth place from the Mercedes of Nico

:16:51. > :16:55.Rosberg. They were seeing speed gains of up to sl kilometres in

:16:55. > :17:00.between running DRS and having the wing in its normal position. So

:17:01. > :17:04.that run there, the Mercedes is powerful and it looks like Rosberg

:17:04. > :17:13.being dropped massively. Does he have an issue or is he trying to

:17:13. > :17:17.manage the tiers as we go onboard with Hamilton. Hamilton is in 14th.

:17:17. > :17:26.ON RADIO: Everything is OK. We think he hit one of the tievers.

:17:26. > :17:30.Carry on. I don't think that was as much a question as a statement.

:17:30. > :17:34.Bruno Senna is passing on regards to his team. That doesn't look the

:17:34. > :17:37.command he is feeling that guilty by that. Here we go. Is this a

:17:37. > :17:42.replay of the incident. Michael Schumacher would have been in the

:17:42. > :17:46.DRS stone. Would have been going up to about 18 kilometres an hour

:17:46. > :17:54.different. It doesn't look like he is going for the pass at this stage.

:17:54. > :17:59.I hate to be down on Michael, it appears I ambiter and twisted. What

:17:59. > :18:03.did Bruno Senna do there? I don't think. I don't know what else he

:18:03. > :18:07.could have cone. I mean Michael might say he braked too early but

:18:07. > :18:11.as the guy behind you have to allow for that. Ifrpblt remember an

:18:11. > :18:18.incident with Fernando Alonso and I had to avoid running into the back

:18:18. > :18:25.of him. In the data it showed he braked 30 metres earlier. We took

:18:25. > :18:27.that to the stewards and they said it is the right of the car in front.

:18:27. > :18:32.What is going on here? Paul di Resta on the option tire. So the

:18:32. > :18:37.faster of the two tyres but does Mark Webber have an issue. He is

:18:37. > :18:39.running wide. He has lost another place to the Toro Rosso, and Jean-

:18:39. > :18:44.Eric Vergne and another place to Felipe Massa. Look who is joining

:18:44. > :18:48.in on all this. It is Hamilton joining in. He must have a problem.

:18:48. > :18:52.He is leaving the door wide-open. But it is closing everybody

:18:52. > :18:57.together this is certainly helping lamb who is up behind Felipe Massa

:18:57. > :19:00.in the Ferrari. So Hamilton taking advantage of this. In the

:19:00. > :19:04.excitement did I finish any sentence? The steward told me that

:19:04. > :19:08.time it's the right of the car in front to pick its braking point.

:19:08. > :19:12.Provided it is not seen as weaving the car behind has to take care.

:19:12. > :19:16.Right, so that clarifies things, they are looking at front nose

:19:16. > :19:24.sections, it is wing damage? can't see anything, but he is

:19:24. > :19:29.clearly driving a wounded car at this stage. ON RADIO: You are down

:19:29. > :19:33.on front load Mark. Red Bull are coming out into the pit lane they

:19:33. > :19:36.have a new nose available so something has gone wrong with that

:19:37. > :19:41.front wing assembly. Decan't see anything obvious. Front wing out

:19:41. > :19:47.and Mark Webber coming in. This will put him well out of the points.

:19:47. > :19:52.Gary, down on, down on front load they were saying, so how does the

:19:52. > :19:56.team know that? They mention the loaned the suspension, so they can

:19:56. > :20:00.see when something dramatic has happened. U that is what it is.

:20:00. > :20:04.Just to make sure the fors are there they are putting a new front

:20:04. > :20:08.wing on, take the opportunity to change the tyres. As I say points

:20:08. > :20:16.will be difficult from here. They will be very difficult from Mark

:20:16. > :20:20.Webber from that pit stop. Very pra -- rapid. 8.7. Alonso leads. We

:20:20. > :20:24.have completed 17 laps of the Spanish Grand Prix. Raikkonen is

:20:24. > :20:28.third. Romain Grosjean is fourth in the Lotus. Fifth place for Rosberg,

:20:28. > :20:33.then it is Vettel in sixth. Button is in century place and Kobayashi

:20:33. > :20:38.just behind him, that is the group we are looking at here. Kobayashi

:20:38. > :20:47.at the back of the group in the Sauber. Paul di Resta is in ninth.

:20:47. > :20:50.Jean-Eric Vergne is tenth. We have lost Webber down theed or ir.

:20:50. > :20:55.Heikki Kovalainen, Perez who has come back in to the pits after a

:20:55. > :21:02.second pit stop, so they are not, they had that problem earlier on

:21:02. > :21:09.and now they have put another set of tievers on the car. -- set of

:21:09. > :21:15.tyres on the car. We have lost two big names of Michael Schumacher and

:21:15. > :21:19.Bruno Senna. So you can see the debris. Yes, a lot of tyre

:21:19. > :21:23.degradation. Interestingly, fastest man on track at the moment is

:21:23. > :21:27.Maldonado. He is bringing that gap down to Alonso to just over two sex.

:21:27. > :21:31.Raikkonen being patient this afternoon, he is a further five

:21:31. > :21:38.seconds behind Maldonado, with a comfortable gap to his team-mate

:21:38. > :21:46.Grosjean of 12 seconds. Let us just, as the race evolved they will have

:21:46. > :21:50.turned -- burned off 45 kilograms of fuel now. They like their Plan B

:21:50. > :21:55.don't they. Well, sometimes Plan B is the better plan. You may as well

:21:55. > :21:59.start with that being Plan A but Plan B. Whatever it is, Button in

:21:59. > :22:02.century place. I mean real opportunity for Button score points.

:22:02. > :22:06.Remember the Championship leader is Sebastian Vettel who is just ahead

:22:06. > :22:10.of him. Jensen is very much in the Championship points battle. He is

:22:10. > :22:14.fourth in the points. Of the main Championship contenders, they are

:22:14. > :22:18.none of them having a great time. Alonso is having the best time. He

:22:18. > :22:23.is fifth in the point bus he currently lead this race, with that

:22:23. > :22:26.advantage over Maldonado, and Rosberg of course, he is in fifth.

:22:26. > :22:30.In this particular group not able to make a huge amount of progress

:22:30. > :22:34.so far. We believe going into the Grand Prix that McLaren were trying

:22:34. > :22:38.to target a two stop race. If Plan B happens to be a three spot as we

:22:38. > :22:41.go onboard with the race leader Fernando Alonso, tremendously

:22:41. > :22:46.experienced, two time World Champion, but if we are expect them

:22:46. > :22:51.to do three stops it could be anywhere round lap 30 we could

:22:51. > :22:55.expect to see Button coming in. The next ten, 11 lap, we will keep an

:22:55. > :22:59.eye on that. Maldonado continuing to reduce that gap to Alonso, so

:22:59. > :23:04.still early in the race. A lot of fuel to go to be burned off before

:23:04. > :23:13.the car comes alive. The Williams showed good pace on Friday and good

:23:13. > :23:21.pace today. Coming up to the HRT. Alonso slips in on the inside.

:23:21. > :23:26.Maldonado was four tenths quicker A big slide for Karthikeyan there.

:23:26. > :23:29.Maldonado going fourth tenth tons last lap but he won't because he

:23:29. > :23:33.hasn't managed to get past Karthikeyan at a critical point,

:23:33. > :23:39.now he does sork but he lost a couple of tenths doing that..

:23:39. > :23:42.you lose a lot of lap time at low speed. We tend to think that Grand

:23:42. > :23:48.Prix cars are capable of doing 200mph. In terms of down force that

:23:48. > :23:54.is the case, in terms of lap time your real lap time comes in the low

:23:54. > :24:00.speed turns. If you can keep your speed up you gain vast amounts of

:24:00. > :24:05.lap time. Gap is 1.7 seconds on this lap. But a lot of tyre

:24:05. > :24:10.management required, and I suspect that Ferrari might need to be do

:24:10. > :24:14.three stops. Maldonado f anyone can get two, it looks like he has

:24:14. > :24:19.better tiever use, Williams were feeling confident this morning and

:24:19. > :24:24.he has crucially, breathing space to the Lotuss which have yet to

:24:24. > :24:32.show the form. -- tyre. We expected the Lotuss to be up there but

:24:32. > :24:36.perhaps they are biding their time. Raikkonen is in third place.

:24:36. > :24:39.Ferrari with the great record in the Spanish Grand Prix. If Romain

:24:39. > :24:45.Grosjean does have a damaged front wing from that earlier contact with

:24:45. > :24:51.Senna, it is not showing. He is matching his more experienced team-

:24:51. > :24:56.mate Raikkonen lap for lap, stark contrast to -- qualifying when they

:24:56. > :25:01.went round in 1 .22. So eight seconds a lap slower at this phase.

:25:01. > :25:04.Heavy cars and trying to manage the tyres. So Alonso versus Maldonado.

:25:04. > :25:08.Maldonado has caught up that gap a bit more on the last lap. We will

:25:08. > :25:14.check the times although the sector times look almost identical. Let us

:25:14. > :25:18.see them across the line. Fraction faster for Maldonado. Down to 1

:25:18. > :25:23.into 5 second t gap. The last section was where Maldonado was a

:25:23. > :25:28.little quicker than Alonso. Reichen has come through in third place o -

:25:28. > :25:32.- Raikkonen has come through in third place. Grosjean in fourth,

:25:32. > :25:39.after his extra pit stop for nose cone change, Mark Webber is down in

:25:39. > :25:45.17th place, Sergio Perez is down in 18th. After that fastest lap, after

:25:45. > :25:49.that second pit ston stop, Perez has taken fastst lap in the race.

:25:49. > :25:54.Hamilton is in 12th position, so no change in that particular group. We

:25:54. > :26:00.think that Hamilton is going for less stops than the others, there

:26:00. > :26:03.he is, tucked in behind Massa. sound like he is busing into the

:26:03. > :26:08.limiter there. You have a choice setting off for the race pace,

:26:08. > :26:14.which means you put a gear which is going to work when you don't have

:26:14. > :26:18.the benefit of DRS being open. So it looks as if Lewis, who did a

:26:18. > :26:23.fantastic lap in qualifying, much quicker at this stage of the race

:26:23. > :26:27.than Massa, running wide on the turn 4 but it sound as if he has

:26:27. > :26:32.compromised his top speed when the DRS is open. If you plan to qualify

:26:32. > :26:36.on pole, and run away with the race you would never use DRS during the

:26:36. > :26:41.Grand Prix. There is a case for saying that Hamilton is driving one

:26:41. > :26:51.of his best seasons at the moment. The qualifying pace we have seen

:26:51. > :26:51.

:26:51. > :26:57.from him... ON RADIO: They will be three stoting. That is confirmation

:26:57. > :27:03.they are going for the two stops on Hamilton's car. He has been first

:27:03. > :27:08.or second in every qualifying session. It guess gets closer to

:27:08. > :27:15.Massa, things haven't all gone his way, he hasn't done anything daft

:27:15. > :27:21.but he hasn't won a race yet. have seen an incident involving

:27:21. > :27:26.Massa and Vettel W. We have to assume that was him overtaking

:27:26. > :27:30.Vettel. I think you are right. Lewis last year has to take

:27:30. > :27:34.responsibility for error tons race track, this year it is like the

:27:34. > :27:37.lures of his early career, not making mistake, driving especially

:27:37. > :27:42.and at the moment mechanic harn are taking the rap for the incidents.

:27:42. > :27:49.That is right. Let us see, Mark Webber was on the attack here,

:27:49. > :27:51.getting past the Caterham of Petrov. Moving up into 169. That African

:27:51. > :27:57.National Congress wing change work the team so evenly matched this

:27:57. > :28:04.year, you are not getting the big gaps. So if you have a slight

:28:04. > :28:10.problem like that it drops you down the back of the pack Mark Webber

:28:10. > :28:15.running 61 seconds behind Alonso. That would have added about 25

:28:15. > :28:19.seconds, that pit stop. Had he not had that we would have been just in

:28:19. > :28:25.round the tail end of the point, but who is in the points and doing

:28:25. > :28:30.a great job is the man going through the screen, Paul di Resta.

:28:30. > :28:34.Jean-Eric Vergne behind him in the points as well. Felipe Massa

:28:34. > :28:38.struggling a little bit with his balance by the looks of it. That is

:28:38. > :28:44.giving Hamilton the chance to get up behind him they are all within

:28:44. > :28:48.the DRS zone. The problem for Hamilton, Massa will give his DRS

:28:48. > :28:53.activated and then Vergne comes in, but they just cross the act vaition

:28:53. > :28:57.point, so Massa should get his DRS open on the front straight. I am

:28:57. > :29:02.not sure. Perhaps he has a good one going. He is going to try and get

:29:02. > :29:06.past massa. Has to go to the outside. Massa protect, he will try

:29:06. > :29:12.and go round the outside. He has to back out. That hooks like he was

:29:12. > :29:16.going, it was going to be the pass of all passes. It looked as if

:29:16. > :29:20.Hamilton got a huge amount of slip stream then he was running out of

:29:20. > :29:29.pass, confirming that the running into the limiter on that engine.

:29:29. > :29:36.That is Daniel Ricciardo. We have seen him. Now having a chance there,

:29:36. > :29:41.close add gap on Hamilton. Now,, we just have Rosberg. ON RADIO:

:29:41. > :29:47.Looking after the tyres, he will be under threat from the cars that

:29:47. > :29:51.have stopped. Let us hear from muem talking to Leigh. Very

:29:51. > :29:56.disappointing, tell us what happened out there? Well, I just

:29:56. > :30:01.took a minute to watch the video data and if you look, the shot that

:30:01. > :30:05.like an overhead shot, you can see that he moves right to defend his

:30:05. > :30:10.inside position. Right in the braking phase he moves back left in

:30:10. > :30:15.front of me. I try to avoid to the inside again, but too late, and all

:30:15. > :30:21.is done, because that is in the braking face, and very frustrating.

:30:21. > :30:28.It is, I am very much annoyed about that, but we have done, a strange

:30:28. > :30:34.manoeuvre from him in Brazil last year and I, before I don't know

:30:34. > :30:38.what happened there, but, yeah, I hope they understand the video

:30:38. > :30:42.pictures good enough to clarify that. How frustrating it is when

:30:42. > :30:47.you in a race winning car? Well, I don't think today would have been a

:30:47. > :30:52.race winning cars but neverst less, we would have got some points. We

:30:52. > :31:00.were on a good speed, and basically a back marker that he was, I mean,

:31:00. > :31:10.he wasn't lail in a real contending fight and position, being behind a

:31:10. > :31:13.

:31:13. > :31:20.Caterham car, but yes, that is second stop. On board but Jenson

:31:20. > :31:28.Button, he is in sixth place. -- with Jenson Button. That was just a

:31:28. > :31:33.bit too long. He may be had the flat spot already and he has just

:31:33. > :31:40.added to it with that lock-up. Maldonado going very quickly having

:31:40. > :31:50.made his pit-stop. McLaren are out of the pits, so Jenson Button will

:31:50. > :31:57.

:31:57. > :32:07.Red Bull mechanics are holding back the hoses. It is Marc Pugh to live.

:32:07. > :32:18.

:32:18. > :32:22.A little bit slow. A -- hits his Webber running behind him.

:32:22. > :32:28.Kovalainen is in 12 than he has only done one stop. Here we see a

:32:28. > :32:33.replay of Alonso. Not happy. It was like a stately wave, he is like the

:32:33. > :32:38.King of Spain, but that would have cost him a bit of time. He knows

:32:38. > :32:44.that later in the pit stop phase, every tenth of a second counts. The

:32:44. > :32:54.Ferrari boys getting ready. Karthikeyan's HRT stop then the end

:32:54. > :33:00.of the pit lane. -- stopped them. Fernando Alonso comes in. The that

:33:00. > :33:05.is Maldonado there, he is going to take the lead, so Alonso has lost

:33:05. > :33:10.time in the pit stop and Maldonado comes through. That early stop was

:33:10. > :33:13.crucial from the Williams team and the fastest lap of the race so far,

:33:14. > :33:19.27.9 from the Maldonado, it not only puts him in the lead but it

:33:19. > :33:24.puts him well in the lead. Maldonado now leading this race,

:33:24. > :33:29.his last lap the fastest of the race for the moment as we see some

:33:29. > :33:36.more pit-stops been made, but on his way again is Grosjean. -- being

:33:36. > :33:42.made. Grosjean rejoining just ahead of the Felipe Massa or an Lewis

:33:42. > :33:50.Hamilton. Grosjean, some new tyres on that car, he should be up to

:33:50. > :33:54.speed immediately. A long way to go this afternoon but, believe it, the

:33:54. > :33:59.Williams and Maldonado could win this. The Toro Rosso trying to go

:33:59. > :34:09.the outside of Paul di Resta and Paul di Resta saying, that his

:34:09. > :34:14.byline. Jean-Eric Vergne on the outside. That would have taken a

:34:14. > :34:20.lot of compliance from Paul di Resta to have pulled back pass off.

:34:20. > :34:26.Hamilton still chasing Felipe Massa. Gary commit your thoughts on

:34:26. > :34:30.strategies at the moment, we have seen a long Sir and -- along so and

:34:30. > :34:38.Maldonado coming in at the same time. Raikkonen is just coming in

:34:38. > :34:46.now. You can see Maldonado had bad really fast lap and it gave him

:34:46. > :34:55.that edge. The last stop, Alonso gave him extra time. I think he was

:34:55. > :34:58.personally a lap too late. He has the Williams in front of him now.

:34:58. > :35:06.think the wave that he gave to the Marussia will have cost him time,

:35:06. > :35:09.but not the sort of time that we are seeing now. We are seeing

:35:09. > :35:15.Hamilton now up with Felipe Massa, he has been struggling to get by

:35:15. > :35:18.the Ferrari. I think they may regret the gear selection this

:35:19. > :35:23.afternoon. Although he couldn't know he would be put to the back of

:35:23. > :35:31.the grid. You can see the effect of losing the downforce as he goes

:35:31. > :35:39.extremely wide in turn the three and then is much tighter at poor.

:35:39. > :35:43.drive-through penalty for Sebastian Vettel. In the championship leader

:35:43. > :35:48.is not having a good race in Spain this weekend. -- of the

:35:48. > :35:54.championship leader. A Felipe Massa has also got bad, which will help

:35:54. > :36:01.Hamilton. -- Felipe Massa has also got the bat, which will help

:36:01. > :36:06.Hamilton. It is all change, because this will release Lewis Hamilton.

:36:06. > :36:11.We have got a change in complexion courtesy of some mistakes on the

:36:12. > :36:15.yellow flag. They have got to show they have backed off a bit.

:36:15. > :36:17.Absolutely and the difficulties the drivers will always say they have

:36:17. > :36:22.is that when you have different phases, you may have just been in

:36:22. > :36:29.the pits and have fresh tyres, you can easily go one or two seconds

:36:29. > :36:37.quicker. Felipe Massa goes to serve his time, that give Lewis Hamilton

:36:37. > :36:43.some clean air. Pedro de la Rosa is the next car up. He is 5.5 seconds

:36:43. > :36:48.behind Grosjean, that is their next target for Lewis Hamilton. Here is

:36:48. > :36:51.the replay of what is going on. A bit of debris on the track, that

:36:51. > :36:58.must have been from the incident between Michael Schumacher and

:36:58. > :37:02.Bruno Senna. We had an incident area between Bruno Senna and

:37:02. > :37:06.Michael Schumacher. Let's hear from Bruno Senna.

:37:06. > :37:12.Bruno, Michael has said it was you in the braking zone and your fault,

:37:12. > :37:19.what do you say to that? Obviously he will not say it is his own fault,

:37:19. > :37:23.but he had much newer tyres than me, I was on very old rubber, so hour

:37:23. > :37:30.breaking points were quite different. I saw crosier and

:37:30. > :37:36.braking very late -- Grosjean. I didn't want Michael to have to do

:37:36. > :37:43.the same. He probably just tried to cross and he hit me, what can you

:37:43. > :37:48.BEN EDWARDS: That is the version of events from Bruno Senna. Another

:37:48. > :37:52.Williams is still leading the race, Maldonado has a seven second

:37:53. > :37:58.advantage, that is remarkable. Seven seconds ahead of Alonso,

:37:58. > :38:08.Raikkonen is still fed, but well 0.3 seconds behind the Ferrari --

:38:08. > :38:21.

:38:21. > :38:24.still furred. -- third, But 12.3 Rosberg deep, so it could be an

:38:24. > :38:28.opportunity for Jenson Button. You lose the downforce through the

:38:28. > :38:34.right hander. I suspect he will be on the radio complaining of

:38:35. > :38:40.understeer or, running in the slipstream of the Mercedes car. He

:38:40. > :38:47.we had Vettel running behind Hamilton. -- here we have. A little

:38:47. > :38:52.bit of time to take stock on where they are in the tyres. But

:38:52. > :38:56.Maldonado, he has got 19 seconds to the first of the Lotus cars and we

:38:56. > :39:00.were suspecting the Lotus would be the stronger car here this

:39:00. > :39:07.afternoon. Difficult to imagine how they will win back 19 seconds

:39:07. > :39:12.unless something remarkable happens in track temperature. I don't want

:39:12. > :39:19.to tempt fate, but it does look like it will be a big day for

:39:19. > :39:21.Williams and Pastor Maldonado. Vettel still to take his drive-

:39:21. > :39:27.through penalty, so Hamilton doesn't have to worry too much

:39:27. > :39:30.about this. Here we are, that is the penalty for not slowing

:39:30. > :39:36.sufficiently under yellow flags and that will have been checked on the

:39:36. > :39:39.sector time through that part of the track. Yes, the stewards will

:39:39. > :39:44.just look and see if you did a faster sector when the yellow flag

:39:44. > :39:49.was waved. Even though you may have lifted in that particular area, if

:39:49. > :39:56.you were in that sector and were quicker over all, they will give

:39:56. > :39:59.you the penalty. It is very straightforward. He comes out just

:40:00. > :40:06.ahead of Hulkenberg and Webber. On board with Jenson Button, still

:40:06. > :40:16.trying to get past Nico Rosberg. Can he go for a lunch? He is on the

:40:16. > :40:16.

:40:16. > :40:21.outside. He is looking for the undercut. The Mercedes in front has

:40:21. > :40:27.got good drive off be corners, it looks like the area they are

:40:27. > :40:31.struggling is aerodynamically. The difficulty for Jenson Button

:40:31. > :40:41.running in that turbulent air is it rubs your front wing of any

:40:41. > :40:44.

:40:44. > :40:54.rear tyres now. Manage their gap. Those are the words to Maldonado

:40:54. > :40:58.who has that advantage over Fernando Alonso. Caviar she --

:40:58. > :41:05.Kobayashi chasing down Jenson Button. Jenson Button was slow off

:41:05. > :41:15.that twisting section which led to Nico Rosberg get away. -- which

:41:15. > :41:15.

:41:15. > :41:24.lets. They are not struggling with the grip. In a lot of speed down to

:41:24. > :41:30.turn one. Nico Rosberg is visibly running wider through a two. So

:41:30. > :41:34.careful as the models build up of line. If you make one mistake and

:41:34. > :41:39.go one inch wider than you did in the previous lap, the marbles will

:41:39. > :41:46.suck you in. Lewis Hamilton has made a 19 places from the start but

:41:47. > :41:50.he is on a different strategy, he has one more stop to make. But he

:41:50. > :42:00.is running in fifth place at the moment with eight different

:42:00. > :42:17.

:42:17. > :42:24.strategy to the other frontrunners. drive-through penalty. TEAM RADIO:

:42:24. > :42:31.You need to go 0.5 seconds faster. That is the engineering way are

:42:31. > :42:35.saying it get your finger out, just give us half a second! That is if

:42:35. > :42:41.you demand, can they just suddenly turn it up that much? That will be

:42:41. > :42:45.interesting to see. Maldonado's gap is still seven seconds after the

:42:45. > :42:50.last lap. We will keep an eye on Raikkonen and Grosjean, see if they

:42:50. > :42:53.put in some rapid lap times. Nothing like that at the moment.

:42:53. > :43:01.Michael Schumacher getting a bit familiar with sitting on the

:43:01. > :43:05.sidelines. It has happened a few times. Nico Rosberg has done a good

:43:05. > :43:10.job of managing this race and putting Jenson Button under

:43:10. > :43:16.pressure from Kobayashi. Kobayashi finds the inside line. Jenson

:43:16. > :43:20.Button wisely, once he realises that Kobayashi, who has a good

:43:20. > :43:25.reputation of someone who knows how to pass... I think Jenson Button

:43:25. > :43:34.was just caught out a little bit with the closing speed of the

:43:34. > :43:41.Sauber and that will make his afternoon more tricky. In Kobayashi

:43:41. > :43:45.a throwing it down at the inside. lovely move. And there was nothing

:43:45. > :43:53.Jenson Button could do about it. But it did take good reaction from

:43:53. > :44:00.the Jenson, it could have ended up in tears. There was ever so

:44:00. > :44:06.slightly at touch, a racing it is. -- A Touch, a racing kiss. Pastor

:44:06. > :44:13.Maldonado, it not familiar to everybody, only in his 24th Grand

:44:13. > :44:19.Prix. His racing career has mainly been in Europe, he started off in

:44:19. > :44:29.Formula Renault, he was the champion in 2004. He cut his first

:44:29. > :44:33.

:44:33. > :44:39.are going off badly now. He is doing more laps than those around

:44:39. > :44:44.him. He has done one stop this afternoon, 19 laps on this set of

:44:44. > :44:49.tyres already, so that is expecting a lot. It is an indication that he

:44:49. > :44:55.is losing the ability to really keep pushing. He has a ten-second a

:44:55. > :45:01.gap to the car in front, which is Grosjean. We are on board with Mark

:45:01. > :45:08.Webber. Having a bit of a drawn-out afternoon, currently in 11th place,

:45:08. > :45:18.so this is four points. A small lock-up, which is a recurring theme

:45:18. > :45:18.

:45:18. > :45:21.The -- Nico Hulkenberg. The other Force India is in 14th place, so a

:45:22. > :45:30.real mix round in termles of performance. Heikki Kovalainen is

:45:30. > :45:37.in 17th just ahead of, well a bit ahead of Petrov. Glock and Pic are

:45:37. > :45:41.still running. Three cars out of the race, Senna and Schumacher

:45:41. > :45:46.after the incident earlier. They come down to turn one, but Rosberg

:45:46. > :45:51.defends to the inside. We saw what Kobayashi did to Button, a little

:45:51. > :45:57.while ago. Can he do the same to the winner of the Chinese Grand

:45:57. > :46:05.Prix? It doesn't have the pace that we saw in China, but there are

:46:05. > :46:13.useful points on off. Rosberg is in sixth. He is able to stay closer to

:46:13. > :46:19.the Mercedes, he will be able to smell the exhaust fumes. It won't

:46:19. > :46:25.be lost on Rosberg, having Kobayashi behind him. Will he have

:46:25. > :46:30.a sniff down into turn 10? Resberg opened the gap slightly so I think

:46:30. > :46:34.he will be too far back. This is great management from Rosberg. He

:46:34. > :46:38.has managed to bat away Jenson Button. Will he be able do the same

:46:38. > :46:42.can Kobayashi. In front of him is Hamilton. They are catching

:46:42. > :46:47.Hamilton. He struggling. He was a second a lap slower than what

:46:47. > :46:53.Rosberg is achieving. It is not just the tyres are dropping away,

:46:53. > :46:57.they are falling away. So can Lewis get away with one more stop? He

:46:57. > :47:01.won't, the McLaren guys are in the pit lane and Hamilton is in. He

:47:01. > :47:03.would have to go 30 laps if he was to stop now and go through to the

:47:03. > :47:07.end of the race. That seems remarkably unlikely. They are

:47:07. > :47:10.bringing him in. They are putting the harder tyre on Hamilton's car.

:47:11. > :47:14.They had do that. There was no way as the teams were telling us, have

:47:14. > :47:18.been telling us throughout the season, once these tyres fall off

:47:18. > :47:23.the cliff, once they lose their performance, it is gone and it is

:47:23. > :47:27.gone here this Barcelona, in a big way. Gary, let us get your thoughts

:47:27. > :47:34.on that with Hamilton, does that force him back into a three stop do

:47:34. > :47:39.you think? I would think it does. The 30 laps to go is a long way. I

:47:39. > :47:43.think 20 laps and they start to fall off. He had a good shot at it.

:47:43. > :47:50.To take it as far as possible. But as David was saying, a second lap

:47:50. > :47:56.is too much to loose. The pit stop is 20 second seconds. Suddenly you

:47:56. > :48:02.are too far behind. So he will be doing three. So Maldonado being

:48:02. > :48:07.encouraged to look after the tyres and he is doing a good job.

:48:07. > :48:12.Maldonado's gap 6.1 seconds, back to Fernando Alonso none. So

:48:12. > :48:16.Hamilton is behind Paul di Resta, so that is, that puts him in 149

:48:16. > :48:20.place, and we have Massa and Perez, I think they are behind, they are

:48:20. > :48:24.behind them. Massa, you can see in the background. Hamilton is still

:48:24. > :48:28.in front of Felipe Massa, but Hamilton knows he has a tough

:48:28. > :48:34.afternoon ahead of him. If he is to score some points. It was always

:48:34. > :48:41.going to be tough from the back of the grid. Trying to go for the two

:48:41. > :48:44.stop strategy does not seem to have work. There is Mark Webber. Men

:48:44. > :48:53.Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo. The two Toro Rosso running in team

:48:54. > :48:57.formation. Then there is this little battle. ON RADIO: They will

:48:57. > :49:01.be pitting again. We are not stopping again. They are not

:49:01. > :49:07.stopping again. He has the fresh tyres and they are going for the

:49:07. > :49:12.rest of the race. That could be a bit of kiddology, they know we

:49:12. > :49:17.listen to the race transmission, 30 laps on a set of tyres? That would

:49:17. > :49:24.be further than what Pirelli are telling us would be usable. If he

:49:24. > :49:33.doesn't stop again that saves him about 20 second of pit stop time

:49:33. > :49:40.this is the incident with Alonso and the Marussia of Pic. That would

:49:40. > :49:43.have cost Alonso a bit of time there I am not sure whether

:49:43. > :49:49.Maldonado would, whether the Ferrari would have enough pace. He

:49:49. > :49:53.is managing the gap nicely, it is just under six seconds, the gap

:49:53. > :49:58.between Maldonado and Alonso arbgsz we see Vettel through the last

:49:58. > :50:02.phrase of the lap. Right in behind Button. He is on the option tyres,

:50:02. > :50:06.I believe. Vettel on the prime t harder of the tyre, so the more

:50:06. > :50:10.durable tyre on the Red Bull. The faster tyre but more sussest

:50:10. > :50:19.Septemberable to drop off on the McLaren. And definitely Vettel is

:50:19. > :50:23.close on the back using the DSR -- DRS. They come into turn and he

:50:23. > :50:27.sweeps past Jenson Button. Sebastian Vettel making it look so

:50:27. > :50:32.easy, he takes seventh place from Jenson Button. I imagine he will

:50:32. > :50:38.get a radio message any time soon, complaining about drop off of the

:50:38. > :50:42.options and he will look for anerly yirier pit stop. A straightforward

:50:42. > :50:47.pass. He carries the momentum through. Jensen driving wounded at

:50:47. > :50:51.the moment on these tyres so not able to defend. Now we are back

:50:51. > :50:55.onboard with Kobayashi, the Japanese driver, still behind Nico

:50:55. > :51:00.Rosberg, in this tussle, which is going on for fifth place, between

:51:00. > :51:04.the Mercedes and the Sauber, the Sauber is still showing strongly of

:51:04. > :51:08.course, Perez has a problem at the start of the race with contact and

:51:08. > :51:12.that caused a puncture, he has to limp round and dropped him down the

:51:12. > :51:16.order, he has been back in for another pit stop but he will

:51:16. > :51:19.struggle to score points whereas Kobayashi has a good opportunity of

:51:19. > :51:23.adding to the points he scored earlier none the season in

:51:23. > :51:27.Australia, in particular. That was his best result of the year so far.

:51:27. > :51:32.Sixth place. I don't think whether he is in sixth place at the moment,

:51:32. > :51:41.and again that Mercedes very quick off the last couple of corners.

:51:41. > :51:46.That may prove key for Rosberg to maintain that fifth place. He is 15

:51:46. > :51:50.seconds behind the fourth man Grosjean then he has a pile of car

:51:50. > :51:57.behind him. Button has come, put a set of the primes on, the harder

:51:57. > :52:04.tyre, as soon as he saw Sebastian pass him, there was no more he

:52:04. > :52:11.could do on those tyres. He will come out behind Massa, 15th place,

:52:11. > :52:15.so Massa trying to get behind Paul di Resta. We have a tussle.

:52:15. > :52:18.Hamilton trying to split the two Toro Rosso, he has got past the

:52:18. > :52:23.first. Vergne getting dephenomenon si. Hamilton with superior tyres

:52:23. > :52:29.trying to go round the outside. Into the next left-hander but he

:52:29. > :52:38.has to work for it. Hamilton gets past the two battling team-mates

:52:38. > :52:41.who might try and swap positions. Vergne manages to fend off Daniel

:52:41. > :52:47.Ricciardo. It took a lot of compliance from the Toro Rosso who

:52:47. > :52:53.won't be lost on them as we see a replay of the pit stop. They had an

:52:53. > :53:01.issue. That is not synchronised diving and the thumbs up. I am all

:53:01. > :53:06.right. They still couldn't. Shame there.. Did the wheel not go on

:53:06. > :53:11.correctly. That is Pete Herzog. He has parked the car. What -- Sergio

:53:12. > :53:17.Perez. That is a shame for him. He was fifth on the the grifpltd it

:53:17. > :53:22.caused some excitement among the South Americans. They had Maldonado

:53:22. > :53:27.on pole. Into the pits come Daniel Ricciardo, so that battle being

:53:27. > :53:31.split apart and Button on the back of that group. Webber in eighth.

:53:31. > :53:36.Hamilton is in ninth. Nico Hulkenberg has come in so tenth for

:53:36. > :53:39.Vergne. 11th for Paul di Resta who is chased by Massa and Button.

:53:39. > :53:44.doesn't get closer than that. As they crossed the line they were

:53:44. > :53:49.separated by half a second. Paul di Resta to Massa to Button. Butt on

:53:49. > :53:54.the fresher tyre, he has to use the advantage to clear these cars. We

:53:54. > :53:58.has seen enough of the back of that Ferrari. So let us keep an eye on

:53:58. > :54:04.generalen -- jensen. Will he try the use the move Kobayashi pulled

:54:04. > :54:08.on him. He has a look. Yeah, he looks like, he thought about, he

:54:08. > :54:13.thought about it and then that sort of scared Massa into a lock off.

:54:13. > :54:17.Which if Jensen has carried the momentum probably could have

:54:17. > :54:22.overtaken him. Massa gets sideways there. No chance for Button to take

:54:22. > :54:28.advantage, but struggling now is Massa. Meanwhile his team-mate

:54:28. > :54:33.Alonso is closing the gap a bit up front Massa takes a late dive down

:54:33. > :54:36.the inside and given enough room there by Paul di Resta. Button

:54:36. > :54:41.follows him through. Paul di Resta lose twos places. You have to say

:54:41. > :54:46.that was a brave pass, a tidy pass from Felipe Massa and Jenson Button

:54:46. > :54:53.in the one second window get his DRS. We have seen the McLaren

:54:53. > :54:57.geared for qualifying is struggling to exploit the DRS, the other Toro

:54:57. > :55:03.Rosso pits, and that leaves clean air. Jensen is close enough to get

:55:03. > :55:07.the slip stream. Will he go left. He does indeed. He is going for it.

:55:07. > :55:12.Can he make the move stick into the first corner, he is late on the

:55:12. > :55:17.brakes, yes he does! Button gets through relatively easily so he

:55:17. > :55:21.gets past Felipe Massa. Rosberg has been in to to the pits and Mark

:55:21. > :55:26.Webber has been into the pits. Maldonado in from the race lead.

:55:26. > :55:29.Vital stop for William, they have been work on their pit stops. It is

:55:30. > :55:34.slow. Slow start for Williams. Away goes Maldonado. That has cost him a

:55:34. > :55:38.couple of seconds at least and Alonso had been catching and he

:55:38. > :55:42.comes out behind on of the Lotuss but that has to stop yet.

:55:42. > :55:47.Vingsfpblt So this is real drama, it means when Alonso makes his stop,

:55:47. > :55:54.there could be a real change here. Now this was the move that Button

:55:54. > :55:59.made. Yes, he goes to the outside, and exploits the clean track, and

:55:59. > :56:03.interior grip of the new tyres to go round in the braking zoerpbgs

:56:03. > :56:07.down into turn one N tend what looked like it was going to be nip

:56:07. > :56:12.and tuck was a straightforward past. Ozone. I am going to have a look at

:56:12. > :56:18.the sector times to see if I can work out whether Alonso will be

:56:18. > :56:22.able to do anything with the gap. Maldonado has done three stops

:56:22. > :56:27.which should see him to the end of this Grand Prix. So if you keep an

:56:27. > :56:32.eye on them, on the screen, I will have a look at the timing monitor.

:56:32. > :56:35.Maldonado has come out behind Raikkonen. Raikkonen is running in

:56:35. > :56:39.third place now. With the second place now that Maldonado has made

:56:39. > :56:43.this pit stop. There you can see on the graphic, where the top

:56:43. > :56:46.contenders are, relative to one another. Maldonado in the middle

:56:47. > :56:52.sector, which is the first opportunity we get after the pit

:56:52. > :56:57.stop, to come patience as we go onboard with Alonso was about six

:56:57. > :57:01.or seven tenths quicker than the Ferrari. He is exploiting that new

:57:01. > :57:08.tyre performance, Alonso on an old set of tyre as he goes upturn three.

:57:08. > :57:12.There is a long way to go. Can they make it on only three stops? This

:57:12. > :57:16.race was won on four. That was occurring to me. Gary, a thought

:57:16. > :57:20.from you? Do you think Maldonado and Williams have come in early for

:57:20. > :57:26.this final stint? Yes. He has 25 laps to go. He hasn't got anywhere

:57:26. > :57:30.near that with the last two sets. It has been 15 laps, so to do 25 is

:57:30. > :57:34.am by shufplts obviously he could do it but the times will drop away.

:57:34. > :57:39.You may see a splash and dash of soft tier for the last eight laps

:57:39. > :57:42.or so It could make for an amazing race. Sebastian Vettel into the

:57:42. > :57:46.pits. Are they changing the nose on that car? They are. Going for a

:57:46. > :57:49.change of nose section. It is slow coming off the old one, unlike when

:57:49. > :57:53.Mark Webber did it. It would be interesting if Gary could get

:57:53. > :57:57.information, what is going won the noses on the Red Bulls? We are not

:57:57. > :58:02.seeing obvious signs of damage, is there something else degrading

:58:02. > :58:06.while they are running out there? If it was blockage with rubber

:58:06. > :58:10.between the slot gaps of the wing and you get the tyre that comes off

:58:10. > :58:13.the other car, you would clean that out with a roller, so what is

:58:14. > :58:18.happening down in Red Bull? Are they accepting, putting the white

:58:18. > :58:22.flag up saying we can't win this race but we can gain good points,

:58:22. > :58:27.and vital information. Are they doing a wing come pafr son during a

:58:27. > :58:31.Grand Prix? That would be a brave move.! You are onboard now with

:58:31. > :58:35.Pastor Maldonado. He is in third, the guys ahead still have to make

:58:35. > :58:41.another stop. The big question is can he get to the end of the race

:58:41. > :58:47.thon set -- set of tyres. It's a 1 second gap to Alonso. He managed to

:58:47. > :58:53.do an under 20 second pit stop. So the they go on well and the left

:58:53. > :58:58.rear man has to go back on with the wheel gun that. Cost him time. With

:58:58. > :59:05.15 second gap, Alonso will come out behind Maldonado. Maldonado was

:59:05. > :59:10.nine tenths of a second quicker on that last lap so advantages to

:59:10. > :59:13.swinger further and further to the Williams. I expect the gap to be

:59:13. > :59:20.anything from 6 seconds plus that. Will give Maldonado breathing space

:59:20. > :59:24.and put a bigger smile on Frank Williams' face. Will the tyre goes

:59:24. > :59:28.the distance. His rivals are being more cautious, Lotus have not

:59:28. > :59:32.brought their cars in. Nor has Ferrari. They believe the Pirelli

:59:32. > :59:37.will give up before the end of the race if they change. There is a

:59:37. > :59:41.Ferrari coming out, so expect that will be for Alonso, he is coming

:59:41. > :59:48.out of the last chicane. Out of camera shot. Let us see if he comes

:59:48. > :59:53.in. It is indeed. So the race leader is into the pits. You can

:59:53. > :59:56.see the man with a slot gap clearer, just cleaning out any rubber from

:59:56. > :00:00.the slot gap of the front wing, that is what I was asking about,

:00:00. > :00:03.there must be such a bigger problem on the frarri, as you see them

:00:03. > :00:07.rejoining behind Maldonado. Maldonado still in front of Ferrari.

:00:07. > :00:11.Now, if the tyres hold up, Maldonado is perfectly placed to

:00:11. > :00:18.win this Grand Prix. The question is, couple more laps on his tyres,

:00:18. > :00:22.will that be the determining factor? ON RADIO: We need to make

:00:22. > :00:32.to it the end on these tyres. Sebastian Vettel made his final

:00:32. > :00:34.

:00:34. > :00:39.stop and needs to go to the end. Maldonado Ann Williams, they will

:00:39. > :00:45.have done the calculations and they think they will be able to go the

:00:45. > :00:49.distance on these tyres. We had some rain here overnight which will

:00:49. > :00:56.take away some of the rubber that was laid down from Friday and

:00:56. > :01:04.Saturday but every lap of the Grand Prix at, are more rubber goes down

:01:04. > :01:08.and the grip becomes a better -- more rubber goes down. This mild

:01:08. > :01:14.and begins to increase on the driver's face as they start to

:01:14. > :01:21.respond a bit better -- a smile begins to increase. Interestingly,

:01:21. > :01:27.still Raikkonen is not coming into the pit. Maldonado will lose a bit

:01:27. > :01:32.of time following the Lotus unless the new tyres that he has got give

:01:32. > :01:37.him a massive advantage. He has got the DRS are open but not close

:01:37. > :01:42.enough to attack, so he is potentially losing time behind the

:01:42. > :01:47.Lotus and a Lotus, having been hit hard by the way the tyres went off

:01:47. > :01:52.in China when Kimi Raikkonen went from second down to 14th, they are

:01:52. > :01:57.not prepared to take that sort of gamble. Maldonado was half a second

:01:57. > :02:01.quicker than Raikkonen, so not a vast amount of difference, but he

:02:01. > :02:08.is crucially putting himself into dirty air and that just accelerates

:02:08. > :02:13.the degradation of the tyres. He has either got to go right up and

:02:13. > :02:17.try for the past or just keep back. He has to accept that he has a few

:02:17. > :02:21.seconds to play with over a Fernando Alonso. He said he would

:02:21. > :02:28.be aggressive when we spoke to him before the Grand Prix and it is

:02:28. > :02:33.looking like it. But sub is the next car behind them. He was 3.1

:02:33. > :02:37.seconds behind at the end of the previous lap -- and Alonso is the

:02:37. > :02:43.next car behind them. He will be like in this, enjoying the fact

:02:43. > :02:48.that Maldonado has not been able to get past Kimi Raikkonen. The Lotus

:02:48. > :02:55.mechanics are not in the pit lane, so no sign that Raikkonen is

:02:55. > :03:00.needing to do anything. He has done his two stops this afternoon, I was

:03:00. > :03:05.expecting maybe once more. Maldonado is in the DRS zone.

:03:05. > :03:11.has surely got to go for it. And there he goes, it is a

:03:11. > :03:17.straightforward pass for Maldonado but Fernando grey and hugely from

:03:17. > :03:26.that whole episode. -- Fernando Alonso gained hugely. He has the

:03:26. > :03:33.bit between his tooth -- peak on home territory. And the fastest lap,

:03:33. > :03:38.Fernando Alonso is being spurred on. He is running in some dirty air of

:03:38. > :03:43.Kimi Raikkonen, but he will make short work of them. Kimi Raikkonen

:03:43. > :03:53.didn't put up too much resistance for -- to Maldonado down into Turn

:03:53. > :03:54.

:03:54. > :04:00.One. It looks like he went a little wide into turn nine, so that gives

:04:00. > :04:03.Raikkonen a bit of breathing space. This is all helping Maldonado again,

:04:03. > :04:13.and now of Alonso get the same treatment, it will not be easy to

:04:13. > :04:18.

:04:18. > :04:24.get past Raikkonen. -- now Alonso Kimi Raikkonen has won here twice

:04:24. > :04:28.before -- at Fernando was a winner here in 2006. They are being a bit

:04:28. > :04:35.cautious on the tyres, they think they will be fast that the end of

:04:35. > :04:43.the race. Alonso uses the DRS, Raikkonen not fighting it at this

:04:43. > :04:46.stage. Looking at the long game. That last lap cost Alonso 1.5

:04:46. > :04:52.seconds to Maldonado and that could prove absolutely crucial later in

:04:52. > :04:58.the Grand Prix. Nothing against a Lotus and Raikkonen, but I was

:04:58. > :05:06.almost willing him to get out of the way. TEAM RADIO: Keep up the

:05:07. > :05:11.pace, keep them from behind -- keep them behind. You just have to slow

:05:11. > :05:16.down and a win the race! That is all you have to do. Somebody said

:05:16. > :05:24.it is all about winning the race at the slowest pace possible. It was

:05:24. > :05:27.Niki Lauda. This is a replay of the overtake, as straightforward pass

:05:27. > :05:36.from Fernando Alonso. Has to run out on to the marble slightly,

:05:36. > :05:40.which is always a bit uncomfortable. It will always affect the tyres.

:05:40. > :05:45.The Lotus mechanics casually walk out with their next set of wheels

:05:45. > :05:50.and tyres. I personally would like to say the blankets covering up a

:05:50. > :05:57.bit later and a bit of a sprint out into the box but maybe they are not

:05:57. > :06:01.so tyre temperature sensitive. Raikkonen goes into the pits. He

:06:01. > :06:05.has been passed by the other two already, he has got to hope that

:06:05. > :06:11.their tyres go off big time because he will be a long way behind them

:06:11. > :06:18.when he comes out of the pits. Away he goes, that looks clean and

:06:18. > :06:28.comfortable. Gary, your thoughts... Just before you go to Gary,

:06:28. > :06:30.

:06:30. > :06:36.Fernando Alonso's last lap has brought the gap down to 1.4 seconds.

:06:36. > :06:42.Gary, your thoughts as we get into the final sections. It will be the

:06:42. > :06:47.last five laps that will be a night there for anyone on one stop. --

:06:47. > :06:55.nightmare. Kimi Raikkonen can do that OK. But that 1.4 seconds will

:06:55. > :07:03.be a lot of smaller at the end of the lap. Marussia at the moment, we

:07:03. > :07:08.are holding it. -- TEAM RADIO: At the moment, we are holding it.

:07:08. > :07:18.think they are actually going for another stop, it will be a four-a

:07:18. > :07:21.

:07:21. > :07:25.stop race for Maldonado and Alonso. Unless he gets that information,

:07:25. > :07:30.Raikkonen has gone fastest of all of those cars in the middle sector.

:07:30. > :07:36.Maldonado has done three more laps than Alonso on this set of tyres.

:07:36. > :07:42.And look how close he is now to the back of Maldonado, it is down to

:07:42. > :07:45.0.9 are the second. And as much as Maldonado wants to manage his tyres,

:07:45. > :07:51.you don't want a car that close. You don't, and although he is

:07:51. > :07:58.trying to manage his tyres, Fernando Alonso is wanting to get

:07:58. > :08:01.track position and deal with issues later in the race. He will put

:08:01. > :08:06.Maldonado under pressure, try and get the lead of this race and hope

:08:06. > :08:12.he can make the tyres blast. He knows the Williams have free extra

:08:12. > :08:18.laps on those tyres, they have enough information from Friday and

:08:18. > :08:24.Saturday to see what of the drop- off there should be. Alonso, as he

:08:24. > :08:27.looks down, will say the traffic of Felipe Massa, who is currently

:08:27. > :08:37.riding behind Paul di Resta and that will put a smile on his face,

:08:37. > :08:42.because Maldonado will clear the way. He is a clever devil. Along so

:08:42. > :08:46.well be loving this. He relishes the battle. -- Fernando Alonso will

:08:46. > :08:50.be loving this. It is a Ferrari that has been massively modified

:08:50. > :08:54.since the start of the season, he won Malaysia but it was totally out

:08:54. > :08:59.of the form book with a car that was not handling it well at that

:08:59. > :09:03.stage. He now has a chance to perhaps with this Grand Prix and he

:09:03. > :09:07.has closed right up to the back of Pastor Maldonado. It is Kimi

:09:07. > :09:12.Raikkonen at the moment that is setting the timing screens alive

:09:12. > :09:19.with very fast sector times, but he is some 21 seconds behind these

:09:19. > :09:28.guys. He just went over one second a lap quicker than both of them,

:09:28. > :09:32.26.94 Kimi Raikkonen. 2.6 behind his team-mate. Kimi Raikkonen has

:09:32. > :09:36.managed a those tyres and is now getting a move on, feeling he can

:09:36. > :09:42.exploit that performance as the fuel gets pretty low at this stage

:09:42. > :09:46.of the Grand Prix. It does look as though Fernando Alonso has a

:09:46. > :09:51.started to lose the performance, while running in the dirty air. In

:09:51. > :09:56.Australia, it was the reverse, when we saw Maldonado crashed out on the

:09:57. > :10:01.last lap running behind Fernando Alonso. I would not expect Alonso

:10:01. > :10:07.to make the same mistake, but it is not good for Ferrari if he spent

:10:07. > :10:13.the next two laps of losing downforce. We saw that crash ball

:10:13. > :10:20.Maldonado in Australia and we saw of Alonso trying to get past

:10:20. > :10:26.Maldonado in China and crashing out. He is not easy to pass, that is for

:10:26. > :10:31.sure. It has settled into a rhythm, no change in the gap. I am just

:10:31. > :10:36.keeping an eye on the timing screens, Raikkonen was 21 seconds

:10:36. > :10:40.behind Maldonado at the end of the last lap. If he has managed to get

:10:40. > :10:45.that down to under 20 seconds and they have to start again and

:10:45. > :10:52.Raikkonen doesn't, he will be the man most likely to win. He has got

:10:52. > :10:58.the gap down to 20.8 seconds. If he can continue to eat into that, it

:10:59. > :11:02.is all about whether these two cars have to stop again this afternoon.

:11:02. > :11:08.Grosjean has made and even the later pit-stop than his team-mate

:11:08. > :11:13.Raikkonen. Maldonado is the race leader. Behind him, Fernando Alonso

:11:13. > :11:18.with Raikkonen third. Grosjean was fourth, he has just gone into the

:11:18. > :11:28.pits but I think he has come out in the same place. They may have Nico

:11:28. > :11:34.

:11:34. > :11:42.Rosberg and Kobayashi. -- then we Saving Tyacke energy? That turned a

:11:42. > :11:47.3, 10 and 11, -- at turn a 3, 10 and 11, it is spinning the tyres up

:11:47. > :11:50.to merge so it is an indication that both front and rear axle, the

:11:50. > :11:56.team are concerned about it and if they are going to be able to not

:11:56. > :12:02.stop again this afternoon as we see Felipe Massa a get well out of the

:12:02. > :12:07.way of that battle... Look how much Felipe Massa has lost with his own

:12:07. > :12:13.battle with Paul di Resta. I think he could have legitimate the got

:12:13. > :12:20.away with holding up Maldonado slightly and playing the team game.

:12:20. > :12:23.He was a bit too keen to get out of the way -- legitimately got away.

:12:23. > :12:29.How is the relationship between Ferrari and Felipe Massa at the

:12:29. > :12:34.moment? Not as good as we are led to believe. Maldonado are

:12:34. > :12:39.continuing on his way. Trying to protect those tyres. Paul di Resta,

:12:39. > :12:45.having been passed, he now has to get out of the way of Fernando

:12:45. > :12:50.Alonso under the blue flag. Where are the McLarens? Lewis Hamilton is

:12:50. > :12:53.currently in seventh place and Jenson Button is in eighth.

:12:53. > :13:03.Sebastian Vettel is still in ninth place and Hulkenberg rounds out the

:13:03. > :13:12.

:13:12. > :13:19.pulling the gap out a little too Alonso and absolutely crucially,

:13:19. > :13:23.Raikkonen in third place, 20 seconds behind this group. If these

:13:23. > :13:28.two guys stop again this afternoon, it is straight forward, Raikkonen

:13:28. > :13:34.and Lotus will win if he doesn't need to stop. Grosjean is setting

:13:34. > :13:37.the fastest first and second sector after that pit-stop of. Lotus have

:13:37. > :13:42.always been quietly coming into this Grand Prix in terms of

:13:42. > :13:45.performance, so it is either very clever strategic play or the fast

:13:46. > :13:53.racing of the car made it is the way they have to play the Brits,

:13:53. > :13:57.they cannot push heavily on the fuel that play the race. It does

:13:57. > :14:03.seem to be that Alonso is dropping back slightly from this battle with

:14:03. > :14:11.her Maldonado, so he is either trying to get some clean air...

:14:11. > :14:16.Roseanne has done 26.2, two seconds faster than the lido -- Grosjean

:14:16. > :14:23.has done. He has been told by the team that he can go absolutely flat

:14:23. > :14:26.out. He is flying. But the question is still about Raikkonen, still

:14:26. > :14:31.about one second per lap quicker than these guys but he is 19

:14:31. > :14:35.seconds behind them. But as the race continues, he is likely to get

:14:35. > :14:39.more than one second a lap and we know from talking to the teams that

:14:39. > :14:46.once these tyres drop-off in performance, they will lose a now

:14:46. > :14:56.the second per lap just like that, the grip goes. -- another second.

:14:56. > :15:33.

:15:33. > :15:41.It is thermal degradation and the very gentle. Raikkonen still

:15:41. > :15:48.pulling these guys in. He has four laps less than the guys in front of

:15:48. > :15:54.him. In theory, they are not that far apart but a few laps on these

:15:54. > :16:01.tyres can be worth an incredible amount. It looks like Alonso loses

:16:01. > :16:11.through the last sector, as we go on board with a replay of Maldonado.

:16:11. > :16:12.

:16:12. > :16:19.A bit tighter for Fernando a -- Alonso. It looks like he has closed

:16:19. > :16:23.the gap a little bit, he gets the DRS Open. It does look like Alonso

:16:23. > :16:28.dropped back for a couple of laps, cooling things down, now building

:16:28. > :16:35.the pressure again. Make full advantage of your experience, take

:16:35. > :16:40.full advantage of the fact you have four laps less on these tyres.

:16:40. > :16:46.Don't take too much out of the car. Intriguing stuff as we get into the

:16:46. > :16:52.last few laps of his Grand Prix. Kimi Raikkonen still going as

:16:52. > :16:58.quickly as possible. 17 seconds behind these two. What happened to

:16:58. > :17:04.him in China when he was running in second place, when the tyres did go,

:17:05. > :17:09.they went big-time. He just disappeared, and went from second

:17:09. > :17:13.to tenth place in one single lap. If that occurred to Maldonado it

:17:13. > :17:19.would change things completely. Then you would ask if the Ferrara

:17:19. > :17:26.had it in it to hold on, or if Maldonado could close the gap at

:17:26. > :17:36.the end of the race. Three different types of car in the top

:17:36. > :17:39.

:17:39. > :17:43.three places, then we have Grosjean in fourth place. Not a lot that the

:17:43. > :17:50.world champions can do in this race apparently. You might have to do

:17:50. > :17:57.the last part of this race alone! The excitement of possibly seeing a

:17:57. > :18:02.first-time winner throng Williams who had a bad deal nastier. It is

:18:02. > :18:10.too much, someone please tell me the end of the story. The last

:18:10. > :18:13.victory for Williams was the Brazilian Grand Prix of 2004,

:18:13. > :18:19.Montoya, a long time ago and that is how long Williams have waited

:18:19. > :18:23.for a victory. Although they are leading, the Ferrari is close

:18:23. > :18:28.behind and Kimi Raikkonen in the lotus is still catching. Williams

:18:28. > :18:34.seemed to like their South Americans, and Maldonado doing a

:18:34. > :18:40.fantastic job. Some said he was a paid driver and they will be eating

:18:40. > :18:45.their words now. This is a fantastic performance. Can he

:18:45. > :18:52.handle the pressure that Alonso is building upon him, inching closer

:18:52. > :18:57.as they move through the last phase of the laugh. Alonso knows he will

:18:58. > :19:04.have to exploit pressure on the last chicane, forced him to use a

:19:04. > :19:11.mistake, then use your KERS and try to take him in turn one. Alonso did

:19:11. > :19:21.win six races in the build up to his last title battle. Fernando

:19:21. > :19:29.Alonso has the support of the home fans as well. What pressure their

:19:29. > :19:34.is on the Venezuelan. The best ever Finnish foreign Venezuela and was

:19:34. > :19:39.back in 1983, you have got to think he will get the best finish for a

:19:39. > :19:43.Venezuelan racer. He is already a national hero back home, a rock

:19:43. > :19:52.star everywhere he goes, and this would just send him beyond any

:19:52. > :19:58.individual. RADIO: You can keep the overtake on. Keep it on until I

:19:58. > :20:02.tell you. That message is very clear. You have to use these

:20:02. > :20:10.engines for multiple Grand Prix so if you use a lot of your fastest

:20:10. > :20:15.engine load in any single Grand Prix, you lose their ability in the

:20:16. > :20:20.next race. Ferrari are going to throw everything at it. That means

:20:21. > :20:30.he has qualifying mode from now until his Engineer comes on the

:20:30. > :20:35.radio. RADIO: The pace is looking very good, you are catching the

:20:35. > :20:40.leaders, we may catch them by the end of the race. We may do, we may

:20:40. > :20:47.not because it is a good margin but how much will the leaders drop-off?

:20:48. > :20:57.That is what nobody knows. Will these tyres last the distance? Kimi

:20:58. > :21:00.

:21:00. > :21:05.Raikkonen did a good first sector, on board with Sebastian Vettel at

:21:06. > :21:12.the moment. Maldonado is controlling the race beautifully.

:21:12. > :21:21.Sebastian Vettel is in ninth place, Hulkenberg behind him in tenth

:21:21. > :21:24.place. Jenson Button is down the inside and he gets past, fairly

:21:24. > :21:29.straight forward into turn tenth and it is Red Bull ahead of the

:21:29. > :21:34.McLaren of Jenson Button, now chasing after Lewis Hamilton.

:21:34. > :21:40.that excitement was going on, the answer to the question - we can see

:21:40. > :21:45.the replay here. Sebastian Vettel has been eyeing up whatever issued

:21:45. > :21:53.Jenson Button has this afternoon. He had the confidence to know that

:21:53. > :22:00.the space would Bowburn as he got into the braking zone. -- the space

:22:00. > :22:05.would open. He will not have enough time to get onto the back of them

:22:05. > :22:15.unless he can pull a big back time and it looks like Alonso has fallen

:22:15. > :22:15.

:22:15. > :22:22.back from Maldonado. Yes, 1.4. Alonso dropping away, and Maldonado

:22:22. > :22:28.looking more secured in the top spot. We are on lap 60 out of 66.

:22:28. > :22:34.Kimi Raikkonen has gained another second on the race leader, the gap

:22:34. > :22:38.down to 12.7 and you can guess Raikkonen is giving his all. It

:22:38. > :22:48.will be interesting to watch further down the battle between

:22:48. > :22:48.

:22:48. > :22:53.Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. The Red Bull is running faster than

:22:53. > :23:01.Hamilton at this phase in the race so we can expect that excitement

:23:01. > :23:05.later in the Grand Prix. We know Nico Rosberg in that Mercedes had a

:23:05. > :23:15.great drive off the last section, off turn 16 so he is under pressure

:23:15. > :23:24.

:23:24. > :23:29.from Kobe -- Kobayashi. Alonso led the initial stages of this race. We

:23:29. > :23:33.saw an incident involving Bruno Senna and Michael Schumacher,

:23:33. > :23:43.Schumacher crashing into the back of Williams which took both those

:23:43. > :23:45.

:23:45. > :23:49.cars out. We saw Charles Pic go out. He doesn't quite repeat the move we

:23:49. > :23:55.saw him make on Jenson Button but another brave attempts by the

:23:55. > :24:01.Japanese driver. Any opportunity, he goes for it, but remarkably he

:24:01. > :24:05.gets away with it, a little kiss here and there, nothing that would

:24:05. > :24:15.make the stewards looked too seriously at him. For another one.

:24:15. > :24:16.

:24:16. > :24:22.He has got it down the inside, Nico Rosberg powerless. A good result

:24:22. > :24:26.for these guys if they can hang in there in the closing stages.

:24:26. > :24:32.this would be a tremendous result for Sauber, they have had some

:24:32. > :24:38.fourth-place finishes in the past, but just talk us through this great

:24:38. > :24:43.move. He made a brake balance adjustments, and as we saw with

:24:43. > :24:52.Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button he just waited for the man in front

:24:52. > :25:02.to brake. Now Hulkenberg. This is a replay from earlier, he doesn't

:25:02. > :25:05.

:25:05. > :25:13.have managed to make the pass. Sebastian Vettel's tyres are a lot

:25:13. > :25:19.fresher so Lewis Hamilton may be powerless to do much defending here.

:25:19. > :25:24.RADIO: Of the cars ahead of us are coming back quite quickly, maybe

:25:24. > :25:29.the second allowed. Keep looking after your tyres and they will

:25:29. > :25:38.continue to come back to us. So a bastion Vettel has also got pretty

:25:38. > :25:45.good tyres and a front wing on. It was a good lap by Maldonado, he

:25:45. > :25:49.gained a lot on Alonso. Grosjean still gaining big time, but

:25:49. > :25:58.Hamilton encouraged. Remember Sebastian Vettel is the

:25:58. > :26:05.championship leader, so it is quite a critical battle between these two.

:26:05. > :26:10.Or on the last lap, Hamilton was six seconds behind Rosberg. Rosberg

:26:10. > :26:20.was running a fairly slow laps on the previous lap. Sebastian Vettel

:26:20. > :26:21.

:26:21. > :26:27.in the DRS area, he pops it Open as you can see. So Bastien Vettel does

:26:27. > :26:33.not get past Hamilton so no change there. McLaren versus Red Bull.

:26:33. > :26:39.Lewis Hamilton holding on as hard as possible with four laps to go,

:26:39. > :26:49.and so is Maldonado because the gap has gone to 2.3 seconds now between

:26:49. > :26:58.Maldonado and Alonso. Maldonado is certainly doing a stunning job up

:26:58. > :27:03.front at the moment. Hamilton, a little bit wide but presumably that

:27:03. > :27:10.won't cost him too much. Hamilton is so good on the brakes normally,

:27:10. > :27:16.isn't he? Yes, there will be the big challenge for Sebastian Vettel.

:27:16. > :27:23.In the last few laps, he looks tidy enough into turn 10, none of the

:27:23. > :27:28.locking we have seen for Jenson Button this afternoon so there may

:27:28. > :27:33.be an issue on the sister car. It does look as if the dream can come

:27:34. > :27:43.true. Maldonado is keeping opening the gap ever-so-slightly to

:27:44. > :27:44.

:27:44. > :27:49.Fernando Alonso. Let's see if he can make the DRS system work.

:27:49. > :27:53.Hamilton has to go defensive, Sebastian Vettel going side-by-side,

:27:53. > :28:03.so Sebastian Vettel takes the place. Nothing Hamilton could do about

:28:03. > :28:06.

:28:06. > :28:12.that. Like Mansell versus Ayrton Senna in 1991! We were robbed of

:28:12. > :28:19.the fact that Sebastian Vettel was going faster than McLaren because

:28:19. > :28:27.he has DRS. That great image you spoke about, they were running

:28:27. > :28:37.wheel-to-wheel. They were millimetres apart. Maldonado still

:28:37. > :28:41.

:28:41. > :28:49.leads, Mark Webber trying to get past Hulkenberg. If this is for the

:28:49. > :28:59.points, that is what they won this afternoon. The slide - now, have

:28:59. > :29:04.

:29:04. > :29:10.the tyres really gone for Alonso. Six. -- 6.6 seconds between him and

:29:10. > :29:16.Maldonado. It seems as if it is Alonso struggling more than

:29:16. > :29:22.Maldonado. Yes, it looks like it could be all over for the challenge

:29:22. > :29:28.from Alonso. He will be praying for the liability issues. The gap has

:29:28. > :29:33.grown significantly on his lap. It does look like his pursuit of the

:29:33. > :29:39.Williams has burned out his tyres. That is Kimi Raikkonen that you can

:29:39. > :29:45.see as the next car up on that straight, and the gap has come down

:29:45. > :29:50.to 4.4 between Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen. Can Kimi Raikkonen

:29:51. > :29:55.snatched second place? He has an opportunity here but can he do it?

:29:55. > :30:01.Maldonado is still in front, looking so good for his first ever

:30:01. > :30:11.victory. Remarkable composure. Sebastian Vettel takes sixth place

:30:11. > :30:16.

:30:16. > :30:24.seen Sebastian overtaking in places where you don't normally overtake.

:30:24. > :30:33.It is a good strategic to all. We can't tell where we are -- where

:30:33. > :30:37.they are using the KERS without the graphic. TEAM RADIO: Fernando is

:30:37. > :30:41.starting to struggle on his tyres and he is going to get traffic,

:30:41. > :30:47.keep pushing. I think Kimi Raikkonen is pushing, no doubt

:30:47. > :30:56.about it. But no time for Fernando Alonso lost. And he hasn't lost as

:30:56. > :31:00.much in the past two sectors. The gap will be down to a few seconds.

:31:00. > :31:06.We are run to the final lap and Maldonado is still in control of

:31:06. > :31:14.this race. The Venezuelan, in only his 24 Grand Prix, could be heading

:31:14. > :31:19.for victory. Kimi Raikkonen has made two seconds on Fernando Alonso

:31:19. > :31:24.on that last lap. Can he get another few on him and take

:31:24. > :31:29.victory? Everybody hoping Maldonado can stay up front in the Williams

:31:29. > :31:33.camp. He would become the first ever Venezuelan to win a Grand Prix.

:31:33. > :31:38.We know from Australia that it is not over until he has got to the

:31:38. > :31:44.end. He crashed out on the last glop -- lap of the Australian Grand

:31:44. > :31:49.Prix but this time he is leading rather than chasing. Cork and there

:31:49. > :31:59.shouldn't pose any problem as they burned down into turn at 10, only

:31:59. > :32:03.six corners to go. They took the gamble of bringing him in earlier

:32:03. > :32:07.for that final set of tyres and we thought it was a gamble, they

:32:07. > :32:11.couldn't get the tyres the last that long but they have, he has

:32:11. > :32:16.looked after them and he has fended off the double world champion at

:32:16. > :32:21.Fernando Alonso and now he has come into the final sectors of the race

:32:21. > :32:27.with a Raikkonen still chasing Fernando Alonso. Pastor Maldonado

:32:27. > :32:32.is coming through the final turn to make history. He wins in Spain. The

:32:32. > :32:39.first ever Venezuela and to do that. The fifth driver in a Fiat car to

:32:39. > :32:43.do it this season. Fernando Alonso second, Kimi Raikkonen third. We

:32:43. > :32:47.are expecting Romain Grosjean to come through. It is the first

:32:47. > :32:53.Williams victory since Brazil 2004, Frank is here to celebrate the

:32:53. > :32:57.moment. What an achievement. It is like a fairy story, like the best

:32:57. > :33:01.Hollywood script you can imagine. Mark Frank has his entire family

:33:01. > :33:09.weekend -- here this weekend. Old Course, the Grand Prix is still

:33:10. > :33:15.going on, as you see Lewis Hamilton batting -- of course. Nico Rosberg

:33:15. > :33:20.has had difficulty on the brakes here. Remember Bahrain, where Nico

:33:20. > :33:25.Rosberg caused controversy. He is going to have to do everything to

:33:25. > :33:29.defend from Lewis Hamilton in the last couple of corners. Is there

:33:29. > :33:35.another chance? Hamilton trying to get the traction. Don't be

:33:35. > :33:39.surprised if Lewis goes for a sneaky drop down the inside. We

:33:39. > :33:43.know the Mercedes had been go through this final turn and I think

:33:43. > :33:48.it is all over. A great drive from Lewis Hamilton from 24th on the

:33:48. > :33:54.grid. Nico Rosberg finishes seventh, Hamilton finishes eighth from the

:33:54. > :34:01.very back of the field and Jenson Button is going to finish in ninth.

:34:01. > :34:10.But Pastor Maldonado takes victory. Route -- TEAM RADIO: Good job,

:34:10. > :34:17.great drive. Good job, guys. A very good job. Just amazing, and very

:34:17. > :34:23.calm on the radio. A "Good job" doesn't do that the justice, it is

:34:23. > :34:27.an incredible drive. At fantastic practice yesterday and then a

:34:27. > :34:32.flawless performance -- a fantastic practice. I think there is a deal

:34:32. > :34:38.that he has to get married now, something about that if he finished

:34:38. > :34:43.on the podium. Maldonado wins the Grand Prix in Spain. Fernando

:34:43. > :34:53.Alonso finishes second, a great result for him in the points.

:34:53. > :35:11.

:35:11. > :35:15.Kobayashi with a superb fifth- Ferrari. They don't have the best

:35:15. > :35:20.car, but I think he will be disappointed not to have done it in

:35:29. > :35:34.from the technical Chief that domination, pole position won the

:35:34. > :35:38.race. Pastor Maldonado did a superb job, the team has done an excellent

:35:38. > :35:43.job and I am delighted. It you really did use of those tyres for

:35:43. > :35:47.the last stint very well. -- you really did. He managed it really

:35:47. > :35:57.well, he has done a super job and I am delighted for the team.

:35:57. > :35:58.

:35:58. > :36:02.Congratulations to the whole team so unexpected. OK, it was an

:36:02. > :36:07.inherited pole but he was second fastest in qualifying and fastest

:36:07. > :36:12.of all of the times in Q2, so it wasn't as if he got lucky with his

:36:12. > :36:18.start. What a performance. Or world class, truly world-class

:36:18. > :36:22.performance. There was nothing lucky about it, great performance

:36:22. > :36:29.on Friday when evaluating the set- up of the car, and they compromise

:36:29. > :36:33.they made and to achieve a great qualifying performance. Into the

:36:33. > :36:40.arms of the key Stanford. Fernando Alonso shows his respect and high-

:36:52. > :36:56.Dickie Stanford has been such a long-term member of that team.

:36:56. > :37:00.he was factory based for a number of years but he was called back

:37:00. > :37:05.into the frontline when Williams started to struggle. Frank Williams,

:37:05. > :37:10.70 years old last week. This was the moment, Pastor Maldonado taking

:37:10. > :37:15.the victory. The battle going on behind him but he wasn't bothered

:37:15. > :37:21.about that, it is victory number one for Pastor Maldonado. He was a

:37:21. > :37:23.superstar hero in Venezuela before this and now, I mean, he gets

:37:23. > :37:29.mobbed anyway what fun there -- what on earth will happen next time

:37:29. > :37:34.he goes back to Venezuela? He will be President, won't he. He is good

:37:34. > :37:38.friends with Hugo Chavez. He won't be so good friends when he is

:37:38. > :37:43.asking him to remove himself from his seat. The only accident today

:37:43. > :37:51.is with the cameraman. It was such a good drive from Pastor Maldonado

:37:51. > :37:58.and also for Alonso and Raikkonen, a valuable points. He was only six-

:39:05. > :39:10.Raikkonen but they weren't able to deliver in the early phase of the

:39:10. > :39:15.race. But the man who did deliver in every phase of the race was

:39:15. > :39:18.Pastor Maldonado. It is a name that will be new to a number of people

:39:18. > :39:22.tuning in for the first time to Formula One but by the looks solid,

:43:06. > :43:10.away from him? He drove such a mature race, he let Fernando Alonso

:43:10. > :43:15.go at the start and didn't put himself in any danger. He drove

:43:15. > :43:21.with absolute brilliance. The way he handled each and every situation

:43:21. > :43:25.was magic, he deserves every moment. Venezuela is home to 27 million

:43:25. > :43:30.people, for the first time, it is home to a Formula One winner. They

:43:30. > :43:37.did well to have the anthem on standby. I was going to say, they

:43:37. > :43:39.didn't have it because they didn't have it for Ireland when we won our

:43:39. > :43:45.first Grand Prix at and they played God Save the Queen, but well done

:43:45. > :43:55.to them, they had it. I hate to point this out but you did refer to

:43:55. > :43:55.

:43:55. > :43:59.Williams as an -- 8 "Minnow" team. They haven't got the reputation of

:43:59. > :44:06.the big boys but they have the ability. That is how well romantic

:44:06. > :44:09.Formula One is at the moment, there are no longer just for be teams,

:44:09. > :44:14.this is the fifth different when and the fifth different car to win

:44:14. > :44:18.a race this year. I don't know when the excitement will end. Let's have

:44:18. > :44:22.a quick word with Bruno Senna, it wasn't the race he wanted, personal

:44:22. > :44:27.frustrations but for the team, you are a big Williams fan, an

:44:27. > :44:32.incredible day. The best thing about it is these guys work so hard,

:44:32. > :44:36.they had such difficulty last year that nobody would think they would

:44:36. > :44:40.be in this position right now. So winning the race, I am so happy for

:44:40. > :44:45.them and all of the hard work everybody has put into the car and

:44:45. > :44:49.the team has paid off. It wasn't my time this time but we know we have

:44:49. > :44:54.a good car and we can score some strong points this season. Full

:44:54. > :44:59.marks to Renault, because they have made your car more drivable and

:44:59. > :45:02.competitive. It is much more competitive, they have made the

:45:02. > :45:06.engines that have won the championship the last two years and

:45:06. > :45:16.we had a great hit there, the whole package of the car is strong and

:45:16. > :45:20.pastor was very strong in the last section. We now go to Monaco

:45:20. > :45:23.witches another slow track. -- which is. I have to ask you about

:45:23. > :45:30.the situation with Michael Schumacher, he was putting the

:45:30. > :45:38.blame on you. How did you see it? Of course, his breaking point would

:45:38. > :45:41.be much later than mine, I had old tyres. I saw him with the DRS, he

:45:42. > :45:46.wasn't quite close enough to go on the outside and there wasn't enough

:45:46. > :45:51.room on the inside and he misjudged it. Michael says you move to the

:45:51. > :46:01.right and that the last minute to the left. Yes, because I thought he

:46:01. > :46:03.

:46:03. > :46:06.was going to go on the inside, not He was behind you, it was his

:46:06. > :46:11.He was behind you, it was his responsibility to do that. I do not

:46:11. > :46:17.want to put the blame on anybody but I think he was quite far behind

:46:17. > :46:21.to be honest and he misjudged my braking distance. It was the first

:46:21. > :46:28.thing my dad told me when I passed my driving test, you are

:46:28. > :46:34.responsible if you are the car behind. Bruno will hope his day

:46:34. > :46:39.eventually comes. It arrived for his uncle Ayrton Senna, he drove

:46:39. > :46:49.for Williams back in the heyday. They know how to win and they are

:46:49. > :47:24.

:47:24. > :47:30.last time Williams picked up victory in Formula One. We are

:47:30. > :47:36.joined by the rays and junior for Maldonado. He is in the car, he

:47:36. > :47:42.keeps his cool, what is it like for you on the pit wall? We knew it was

:47:42. > :47:49.a possibility, but everything was very tight. We managed to hold it

:47:49. > :47:57.together as it was planned, and he did a superb job. You are from

:47:57. > :48:06.Barcelona, what a miracle to have this in your home town. Yes, I was

:48:06. > :48:10.not born far from here. To be in pole position, then to finish today

:48:10. > :48:16.as we did I think is the best we can achieve. It's has been a

:48:16. > :48:21.fantastic performance through the whole weekend, but there are few

:48:21. > :48:28.and Maldonado seemed like you expected it. When you said on the

:48:28. > :48:34.radio "good job" - it is a fantastic job! Is this as excited

:48:34. > :48:39.as you get? We want to continue on that line and we knew it would be

:48:39. > :48:42.very tight. During the race we knew what would be possible, then at

:48:42. > :48:49.some point we knew it was possible to win the race and he managed to

:48:49. > :48:53.do a very good job. Your emotions for the team that gave you your

:48:53. > :48:59.break in Formula One? I as I said in the commentary, I almost didn't

:48:59. > :49:04.want to watch because it was so emotional. After the difficulties

:49:04. > :49:09.the team had last year, to come back and for Maldonado to win his

:49:09. > :49:13.first Grand Prix as well, I can remember those emotions. Not only

:49:13. > :49:18.are Williams the winners, but Formula One is a winner today as

:49:18. > :49:21.well. Let's hear from the man himself in the press conference -

:49:21. > :49:26.himself in the press conference - the race winner, Pastor Maldonado.

:49:26. > :49:32.Your first victory, brilliantly judged - Describe your emotion? For

:49:32. > :49:36.it is a wonderful day, not only funny but for the whole team who

:49:36. > :49:44.have been pushing so hard since last year to improve race by race

:49:44. > :49:54.and here we are. After the qualifying, it was a great

:49:54. > :49:57.qualifying, and today we did it again. It was a tough race,

:49:57. > :50:03.especially because of the rear tyres after a couple of laps we

:50:03. > :50:11.were struggling with, but I need to say that I am pretty happy because

:50:11. > :50:19.the car was so competitive since the first lap. Fernando did a

:50:19. > :50:26.better start than me but I was following the pace. As my first

:50:26. > :50:30.podium and my first victory, you can imagine what I feel. Well done.

:50:30. > :50:38.Fernando, once again, a blinding start. Yes, it was a fantastic

:50:38. > :50:46.start again. The team prepare the clutch and is seeded to go from the

:50:46. > :50:54.start it was close. We had the better side, the inside, so we took

:50:54. > :50:58.the momentum and were led the race for the first part. Then Williams

:50:59. > :51:06.anticipated the stop and got in front. At the end it was close

:51:06. > :51:11.because we had may be a new were tyre than Maldonado but it was not

:51:11. > :51:20.possible in the last corner. In the last laps, I felt the car was

:51:20. > :51:24.strange. Maybe it was some hydro dynamic part but we were luckier

:51:24. > :51:30.the end and the second place feels fantastic at home thanks to the

:51:30. > :51:37.people who came here, thanks to the people at home, and definitely I

:51:37. > :51:41.step forward in terms of championship possibilities. Kimi

:51:41. > :51:49.Raikkonen, third today. Do you think you and your team made the

:51:49. > :51:54.right choices this afternoon? a bit disappointed, in the end we

:51:54. > :52:00.were very good but it was too late. We were not fast enough and big

:52:00. > :52:07.enough to race and that is why we could not get the win. We showed we

:52:07. > :52:15.had the speed but we have to look whether we've made the wrong choice

:52:15. > :52:25.in the first pit-stop. I was not so disappointed during the race

:52:25. > :52:25.

:52:25. > :52:34.because I've -- I saw I could not follow them. It was a disappointing

:52:34. > :52:39.feeling afterwards. I needed a few more laps to maybe fight for first

:52:39. > :52:45.place but we are going in the right direction. So far, Kimi Raikkonen

:52:45. > :52:52.has had the second and third, still yet to smile but perhaps that will

:52:52. > :52:56.finally appear. Certainly plenty of smiling in the winning team for

:52:56. > :53:04.Maldonado and of the Williams team. It was another strong performance

:53:04. > :53:09.from the Lotus drivers. Some pace has dropped off the Red Bull cars.

:53:09. > :53:14.Paul di Resta finally finished in 14th place, and what of Felipe

:53:14. > :53:22.Massa? Plenty of questions about his future. Then we get down to the

:53:22. > :53:32.boys who failed to finish the race, including Michael Schumacher. We

:53:32. > :53:42.

:53:42. > :53:47.have heard from both him and the getting closer. We have been

:53:47. > :53:53.talking about Ferrari having difficulty developing their car,

:53:53. > :53:59.but yet Fernando Alonso joint leader of the world championship.

:53:59. > :54:09.Maldonado moving up to ninth place. This is what it means a for the

:54:09. > :54:29.

:54:29. > :54:36.the team. I am what the man himself, he has had an amazing day. Frank,

:54:36. > :54:46.please talk us through it. As a good Englishman, I don't get

:54:46. > :54:47.

:54:47. > :54:53.emotional like the Irish do. I am quietly immensely delighted. Boy,

:54:53. > :55:00.we needed that win, you can imagine. When did you first have an inkling

:55:00. > :55:05.there was something magic in the car? Magic is a great word, thanks

:55:05. > :55:13.for that. We had a fresh group of people, but it has been very well

:55:13. > :55:18.balanced most of the time. They have excelled and delivered a car

:55:18. > :55:22.that was pretty competitive. next question is we are always

:55:22. > :55:31.trying to move the Bath forward - where is the expectation for the

:55:31. > :55:38.rest of the season? The Renault engine is very competitive. I guess

:55:38. > :55:46.all the engines will stay with each other in terms of competitiveness.

:55:46. > :55:52.The car has possibilities, and the development has to exceed the rate

:55:52. > :55:56.of development of the other teams. You are back with your favourite

:55:56. > :56:00.bedfellows in terms of engines - Renault, you and Renault seemed to

:56:00. > :56:10.make something magic, they seem to make something from nothing, is

:56:10. > :56:15.that how it is with you? We have always been with them, for many

:56:15. > :56:20.years, lovely, charming people. very best birthday present you

:56:20. > :56:25.could have wished for. Congratulations - magic.

:56:25. > :56:30.Happy birthday to Sir Frank. What did you want to say? The Lewis

:56:31. > :56:36.Hamilton just ran past into the Williams motor home, I suspect to

:56:36. > :56:40.congratulate the team, and that just shows what high regard to the

:56:40. > :56:49.paddock has for Williams. Everyone politely looked away when they hit

:56:49. > :56:55.rock bottom last year. There he is, he will be trying to find francs.

:56:55. > :57:03.Fantastic respect from him to see Frank. Are you sure he is not

:57:03. > :57:10.asking if he can drive for them?! Maybe we can grab him. How brave

:57:10. > :57:16.Are you feeling? I think we can. He is in sunglasses, running rather

:57:16. > :57:21.quickly. I don't want to stop him. The reason he is celebrating with

:57:21. > :57:26.them is that this is a sport about beating your opponents. There is

:57:26. > :57:30.real love for this team. Yes, because I have very high sporting

:57:30. > :57:35.ethics. Frank had a difficult period building the Formula One

:57:36. > :57:41.team, then after they were successful he had another difficult

:57:41. > :57:45.period after his accident. Then they went through a period when

:57:46. > :57:52.nothing seemed to work out for them, but what a comeback. When you have

:57:52. > :57:57.got winning in your DNA, you never forget how to do it. How could they

:57:57. > :58:03.be so bad last season and turn things around so quickly? It is

:58:03. > :58:08.hard to pinpoint any one thing. As Frank said, it was the engine, the

:58:08. > :58:14.new breed of people he has been there, several top engineers, and

:58:14. > :58:18.collectively it seems to have clicked. Rubens Barrichello will

:58:19. > :58:25.obviously rue the day he left but this is a fresh team and they are

:58:25. > :58:28.up on it. What are we saying about Pastor Maldonado - is he a good

:58:28. > :58:35.driver or is the car just incredible? He has had some tough

:58:35. > :58:41.times. He has. It is never easy developing your career in front of

:58:41. > :58:47.the cameras. This was him paying back Lewis Hamilton for what he

:58:47. > :58:51.thought about that coming together. There was a very public mistake on

:58:51. > :58:56.the last lap of the Grand Prix in Melbourne when he was following

:58:56. > :59:02.Fernando Alonso, but what a way to repay the faith of the team. It was

:59:02. > :59:08.said he was a paid driver, but there was nothing lucky about the

:59:08. > :59:12.victory he had today. Fantastic preparation, fantastic qualifying,

:59:13. > :59:17.and then flawless execution. There was not much good luck for Lewis

:59:17. > :59:27.Hamilton this weekend, finishing in eighth place, but he started last.

:59:27. > :59:27.

:59:27. > :59:32.Here is what he said after the race. Congratulations, are you proud of

:59:32. > :59:42.yourself? I am proud of myself and proud of the team. We did a great

:59:42. > :59:45.

:59:45. > :59:50.job today. To come from all the way It was incredibly tough. Someone

:59:50. > :59:56.told me I was the only one who did two stops, and considering everyone

:59:56. > :00:01.is talking always about how aggressive my driving is and how

:00:01. > :00:08.much better my team-mate is on tyres than me, this was a good

:00:08. > :00:12.demonstration. You have given your team a lot of fantastic data. What

:00:12. > :00:18.did you think when you found out you would be on the tyres for that

:00:18. > :00:23.long? I knew it would be quite some time. They were trying to get me to

:00:23. > :00:26.get seven laps out of the previous set we had. I didn't think they

:00:26. > :00:32.would because we were stuck behind Felipe Massa for quite a long time,

:00:32. > :00:40.but I think I got maybe five of those seven laps and then I have to

:00:40. > :00:46.come in, or otherwise there would be -- I would be overtaken by the

:00:46. > :00:51.guys behind. I didn't know what it would be like, but I nursed them

:00:51. > :00:55.the best I possibly could. Going back to the start, it was a

:00:55. > :01:05.fantastic start. How difficult was it to keep the cap on your

:01:05. > :01:07.

:01:07. > :01:14.yesterday behind me and it was another day, another fight. That

:01:14. > :01:19.putt. It was a great challenge to come back and me and my dad and my

:01:19. > :01:22.family were at racing, that is what we sometimes have to do, do the

:01:22. > :01:25.overtaking but I want to congratulate Williams and Pastor

:01:26. > :01:30.Maldonado, I am really happy for them.

:01:30. > :01:36.Lewis said he only stopped twice, but he stopped three times. Perhaps

:01:36. > :01:40.he blank this out of his memory, another mistake from McLaren.

:01:40. > :01:45.is just where the rear tyre was so close and he was a bit aggressive.

:01:45. > :01:50.Look at the way he turns. Maybe a bit more aggressive than the rest

:01:50. > :01:53.of the team wanted him to be. they don't have lollipop man, they

:01:53. > :01:58.rely on the light system and we don't know whether he went early

:01:58. > :02:03.and it was a mistake with the way they positioned the rear left tyre.

:02:03. > :02:07.It may be as straightforward mistake. Just to let you know,

:02:07. > :02:11.plenty more Formula One coming your way this weekend. There are

:02:11. > :02:16.highlights the later today on BBC Two, so make sure you stick with us

:02:16. > :02:22.all that. Then there is plenty more, Match of the Day, a big day for

:02:22. > :02:27.football today, tonight at 10:25pm. If you would like to see the

:02:27. > :02:31.highlights of the Formula One, 5:15pm on BBC Two. And we return in

:02:31. > :02:36.a couple of weeks for the Grand Prix that they all want to win and

:02:36. > :02:40.certainly Pastor Maldonado would love to win, the Monaco Grand Prix.

:02:40. > :02:45.If you press the red Button, you can see what is on Eddie's for it.

:02:45. > :02:49.Join us to find out what that is all about -- feet. To be frank,

:02:49. > :02:53.Williams weren't good enough last year, but the original British

:02:53. > :03:03.privateers are back where they belong. For the first time in eight

:03:03. > :03:35.

:03:35. > :03:41.years, Williams win a race. and by Maldonado who now leads the
