:00:32. > :01:16.Hello and welcome to Brazil and Interlagos. As you can tell, it is
:01:17. > :01:20.raining here once again. Gary Anderson, no surprise that we get
:01:21. > :01:26.wet weather whenever we come to Sao Paulo but it will put a problem in
:01:27. > :01:32.place for Pirelli. It is not the thunderstorm that we always get but
:01:33. > :01:35.it will present problems. The teams have put in a lot of hard work and
:01:36. > :01:38.they will want to make sure everything is OK. Pirelli brought
:01:39. > :01:42.some different tyres here to test. They will want to make sure they
:01:43. > :01:48.have got the basic tire sorted out. I think Pirelli will be a bit upset.
:01:49. > :01:54.But they will still do some running, I am sure. Sebastian Vettel stands
:01:55. > :02:03.on the brink of history, nine race wins in a row. He could do it this
:02:04. > :02:08.weekend. Michael Schumacher, his record of 13 race wins in one
:02:09. > :02:13.season. Gary, do we think this weekend we will see another Vettel
:02:14. > :02:18.domination? He has got nothing to lose. When you have got that
:02:19. > :02:23.opportunity, you go for it. The car will have a good run here. But the
:02:24. > :02:27.weather can change the circumstances. You never quite know
:02:28. > :02:30.the outcome until the chequered flag falls. Let's have a look at the
:02:31. > :02:48.drivers' championship standings. Kimi Raikkonen is not here. Mark
:02:49. > :02:53.Webber in his final race when will be hoping to snatch victory from
:02:54. > :03:09.Sebastian Vettel. The constructors' championship is
:03:10. > :03:12.now the big one. It is worth $10 million. That is a lot of
:03:13. > :03:17.development money for next year. It comes out of the prize-money. This
:03:18. > :03:21.weather again, you never know what will happen. Somebody could move up
:03:22. > :03:27.quickly and get a $10 million bonus on Sunday night. Tom Clarkson is in
:03:28. > :03:34.the pit lane for us. It will not be straightforward, will it? No, it is
:03:35. > :03:36.not and it will be very wet down here in the pit lane. The raindrops
:03:37. > :03:43.are getting bigger and more frequent. The track is now wet. I
:03:44. > :03:46.expect to see the cars going out on intermediate tyres and even rain
:03:47. > :03:51.tyres as the session goes on. This will not be relevant for the weekend
:03:52. > :03:55.because the forecast for Sunday 's drive. We expect to see the team is
:03:56. > :03:59.doing as much work as they can for next year's regulations. At Red
:04:00. > :04:04.Bull, Mark Webber's car has some aerodynamic devices. They are
:04:05. > :04:09.checking the airflow of the front wheel. I expect to see similar
:04:10. > :04:14.things up and down the pit lane. With a beautiful view over Sao
:04:15. > :04:19.Paulo, Ben Edwards and Tony dodgems is in the commentary box for us. It
:04:20. > :04:24.is the final race of the year and we are looking forward to several
:04:25. > :04:31.situations being involved. Tony is the author of an annual. It has been
:04:32. > :04:36.a remarkable season for Red Bull. For the first half of the season it
:04:37. > :04:41.looked like we had a fight on our hands. Notice was there but now Red
:04:42. > :04:45.Bull has steam-rollered it. Now we have this conclusion where Sebastian
:04:46. > :04:50.is trying to do nine wins, Mark I am sure would like to go out with a
:04:51. > :04:53.win. I do not think he will be giving any favours to Sebastian and
:04:54. > :04:58.there will not be any coming the other way for sure. It will be
:04:59. > :05:04.interesting. There is a lot to look forward to, so let's get ready for
:05:05. > :05:08.this first practice session. Yes, let's get things under way in the
:05:09. > :05:23.rain. The lights get ready to go out.
:05:24. > :05:31.Welcome to the final meeting of the year. The final Grand Prix event of
:05:32. > :05:36.the year, around 19 of the 2013 championship. Here we are at
:05:37. > :05:42.Interlagos in Brazil at the Autodromo Carlos Pace, named after
:05:43. > :05:46.the driver who took his one and only victory here in Brazil. It is a
:05:47. > :05:49.great place to bring the season to its conclusion. Many times we have
:05:50. > :05:53.seen the Championship wrapped up here, as we did 12 months ago, in
:05:54. > :05:58.that remarkable race, Sebastian Vettel spinning on the first lap up
:05:59. > :06:02.after contact with Bruno Senna but winning in sixth place -- finishing
:06:03. > :06:09.in sixth place and winning the Championship. It is a great circuit,
:06:10. > :06:13.a wonderful track to drive. Gary Anderson and I walked the track
:06:14. > :06:17.yesterday to get some familiarity with it. We have been around a few
:06:18. > :06:20.times in cars or on foot. It is always an interesting place to go
:06:21. > :06:25.around. It is virtually on three levels. There is a lot of elevation
:06:26. > :06:28.change. The lowest point is when they come out of turn five and the
:06:29. > :06:32.highest point is that the start finish line that there is almost a
:06:33. > :06:36.middle layer where there are the hairpins on the infield where
:06:37. > :06:40.traction and turning is crucial. Lewis Hamilton is getting ready in
:06:41. > :06:47.the Mercedes Garrard. He is in third place. There is no chance of
:06:48. > :06:50.catching Fernando Alonso in second. Hulkenberg is only one point behind
:06:51. > :06:54.Paul di Resta and we know the Sauber has been running strongly in recent
:06:55. > :07:02.events. There is a chance for Hulkenberg to get into the top ten
:07:03. > :07:11.in the Championship. Tony Dodgins is with me. He is the author of the
:07:12. > :07:15.auto course annual. I am always intrigued to see who gets into the
:07:16. > :07:18.top ten. It reflects the equipment they have at their disposal as
:07:19. > :07:27.well. You talked about Nico Hulkenberg. . It will be interesting
:07:28. > :07:31.to see where he ends up next year. Still no confirmation on where he
:07:32. > :07:35.will be. It looks like he will be at Force India but no actual
:07:36. > :07:39.confirmation. He was talking yesterday to the press to say
:07:40. > :07:43.nothing is signed and sealed as yet but he looks pretty confident that
:07:44. > :07:51.he will be somewhere. Roman grow Sian was the star of the show last
:07:52. > :07:56.time -- Roman Grosjean. And Lotus are still in with a shout of chasing
:07:57. > :08:00.down Ferrari for third in the Championship. Second, third and
:08:01. > :08:05.fourth are still open between Mercedes, Ferrari and Lotus. 10th
:08:06. > :08:08.place at the moment the longs to Marussia. Cars were bargaining into
:08:09. > :08:17.their last race as an engine supplier. -- cause worth. Kate are
:08:18. > :08:22.hoping for a wet race. This man, Mark Webber, going into his last
:08:23. > :08:27.ever event as a Formula One racing driver. What a brilliant career it
:08:28. > :08:34.has been for Mark Webber. Never quite stepping onto the top as world
:08:35. > :08:39.championship. In 2010 he became very close. A team which did not have
:08:40. > :08:44.success this year which they might have expected last year was the
:08:45. > :08:54.McLaren team. Tom Clarkson is with Sam Michael. Rain at Interlaken is,
:08:55. > :08:58.how does it expect -- rain at Interlagos, how does it affect
:08:59. > :09:03.things? When you run on slick tyres you want to take a lot of
:09:04. > :09:05.measurements of the profile. After the mechanics instrumented all the
:09:06. > :09:11.cars to have the equipment on the car, they have had to strip it off.
:09:12. > :09:18.It is a pain but it is the same for everybody. Will we see much running
:09:19. > :09:21.from you? We are going out now. At the moment it is intermediate
:09:22. > :09:26.conditions, not all wet. In terms of what running we decide to do, it
:09:27. > :09:32.will be wept as well tomorrow. We cannot consume too many tyres. We
:09:33. > :09:36.have an extra set for today. What about your chances this weekend?
:09:37. > :09:40.Jenson said he was hoping to get a podium. If we are like this,
:09:41. > :09:47.anything could happen. It is classic Brazil. It was a win here last
:09:48. > :09:53.year, it has been a long 12 months for everyone at McLaren, hasn't it?
:09:54. > :09:58.F1 is a competitive industry. We would not want it any other way. It
:09:59. > :10:04.is a long time since they have had a podium. They have not even had a
:10:05. > :10:07.fourth place finish. It is 1966 since they have not had a fourth
:10:08. > :10:12.place finish. It is not good from McLaren's point of view. Lewis
:10:13. > :10:16.Hamilton made the jump from McLaren to Mercedes and it has proved to be
:10:17. > :10:22.right. A year ago nobody would have said that. They would have said, why
:10:23. > :10:26.is he doing it? There was smart thinking behind that and it has
:10:27. > :10:32.worked out well for him. He has had one victory so far and some strong
:10:33. > :10:37.pole positions. Some of your comments are coming in and they have
:10:38. > :10:44.been coming in during the week. They have been using the hashtag BBC F1.
:10:45. > :10:49.Some of you have been giving your best and worst moments of the year.
:10:50. > :10:53.Several of you have said the best moment was Hamilton winning in
:10:54. > :10:56.Hungary but they said the worst was Lewis's tyre blow out at
:10:57. > :11:01.Silverstone. Some of you were there watching that. Lewis Hamilton looked
:11:02. > :11:10.to be in good shape at Silverstone until the tyre went. Yes, he was
:11:11. > :11:15.leading that event but then Nico Hulkenberg picked that up. That in a
:11:16. > :11:19.way was a turning point for the whole season I think when Labour
:11:20. > :11:22.brought the other tyres back and the competitive pit are changed and Red
:11:23. > :11:28.Bull went from strength to strength. That is a key issue in the whole
:11:29. > :11:33.year. The change of tyres has been an important issue. It suited some
:11:34. > :11:38.teams more than others. Nico Rosberg is getting ready to come out. It is
:11:39. > :11:45.an interesting rivalry which has existed between Nico Rosberg and
:11:46. > :11:50.Lewis Hamilton. I think there will be a lot of intrigue there because
:11:51. > :11:54.Hamilton and Ross Berg have been there a similarly matched in terms
:11:55. > :11:57.of results but going about it in a slightly different way. Hamilton is
:11:58. > :12:03.further up in the Championship than Nico Rosberg. But he is slightly
:12:04. > :12:09.ahead in terms of race victories. There is Jenson Button. He is
:12:10. > :12:12.looking at trying to get a podium finish to finish this season off in
:12:13. > :12:17.a better way for McLaren. And this is the last I we will see the cars
:12:18. > :12:24.like this in this format. Completely new rules next year mean the cars
:12:25. > :12:27.will look very different. They will still be single seater Formula One
:12:28. > :12:32.cars with all the bits in the same places but they will look very
:12:33. > :12:37.different. Quite a lot of people are saying they will not look very
:12:38. > :12:41.attractive. Absolutely. Let's get down to Gary. You are in the pit
:12:42. > :12:47.lane. Are you seeing anything exciting? Everyone is just getting
:12:48. > :12:53.ready. We are keeping an eye on the Red Bulls with their measuring
:12:54. > :12:57.equipment. As Sam Michael said when the tyre profile changes it effects
:12:58. > :13:02.the airflow. At the end of the day you have to try and analyse that.
:13:03. > :13:07.The new regulations mean the front wings will change how the airflow
:13:08. > :13:12.goes around the tyre. Quite a lot of changes as you said, Ben. The lower
:13:13. > :13:20.chassis and lower nose. I think beauty is in the eye of the
:13:21. > :13:25.beholder. If you make the chequered flag first the cars suddenly become
:13:26. > :13:28.very nice. I spoke to one team personnel member yesterday and he
:13:29. > :13:32.said the first drawings he saw of next year's car, and he's not an
:13:33. > :13:38.engineer, it gave him a shock as to how the car looked and it was not
:13:39. > :13:42.very pretty. But the design has been changing a little bit and hopefully
:13:43. > :13:46.it won't be quite as unattractive as it first appeared. I think we will
:13:47. > :13:49.see some slightly odd appendages that the front. They have a slightly
:13:50. > :13:56.revised crash structure at the front. Yes, the crash structure
:13:57. > :14:00.there has to be a certain area where it is 50 millimetres back at the
:14:01. > :14:09.side of the nose which is to stop penetration from the side of the
:14:10. > :14:17.chassis if you get T-bone. That is a noisy Marussia. Less than half the
:14:18. > :14:23.height of it is now. It is interpreting the regulations which
:14:24. > :14:30.is the big Rob Lum, trying to see if it will let you do something
:14:31. > :14:35.different -- big problem. The teams have engineers looking at this. The
:14:36. > :14:47.big test next year in January will have some strange devices.
:14:48. > :14:50.Jenson Button making a practice. There, but we have been joined by
:14:51. > :14:58.the team principal. Good morning, Christian. How are you today? Very
:14:59. > :15:05.good. Hands going into this weekend, of course, a huge weekend for both
:15:06. > :15:14.of your drivers. -- plans. Sebastian Vettel trying to match with nine
:15:15. > :15:19.wins or 13 against Schumacher. How are you dealing with that? It is
:15:20. > :15:24.going to be exciting because they are both very excited about that. It
:15:25. > :15:28.is going to be a fascinating weekend. Plus the fact that we have
:15:29. > :15:34.some interesting weather due over the next couple of days as well.
:15:35. > :15:38.Yeah, it is going to be very tricky conditions, I think, for everybody,
:15:39. > :15:42.as we can see from how things have started today. A quick question
:15:43. > :15:46.because there are reports in a couple of newspapers that Bernie
:15:47. > :15:52.Ecclestone has been saying you would be his ideal replacement! We going
:15:53. > :16:00.to see a Jane -- a change of job for you? He is going to be here for a
:16:01. > :16:04.long time to come. He is in great shape and still doing some great
:16:05. > :16:11.deals for the sport. My focus is fully on this team and it is for the
:16:12. > :16:15.foreseeable future. But is it something you would maybe think
:16:16. > :16:19.about in the future yourself? I can't see how any one individual can
:16:20. > :16:24.replace Bernie. What he does is quite unique and it will be a very
:16:25. > :16:28.sad day for the sport when he is no longer here, so, as they say, my
:16:29. > :16:33.focus is very much on this team and the job I have to do here and what I
:16:34. > :16:37.want to achieve more in the future. We just have some shots of Mark
:16:38. > :16:45.Webber. Can you explain to us the big break on his car at the moment?
:16:46. > :16:48.What it is doing? It is a dynamic advice measuring airflow around the
:16:49. > :16:53.car and it is an opportunity to have a look at how some of the airflow
:16:54. > :16:58.works. So he will be doing some laps with it as we gather data. And as we
:16:59. > :17:03.start looking towards next year as well. You think you will get a
:17:04. > :17:13.chance to run the prototype ready tyre this morning? Or will it be too
:17:14. > :17:20.wet for that? -- Pirelli tyre. Yes, too wet for that. Hopefully we will
:17:21. > :17:26.catch up with you later. Thank you for that. One of the Friday and
:17:27. > :17:42.develop and drivers for Formula One here and one of several. We have
:17:43. > :17:46.Rodolfo Gonzalez for Marussia and another driver for Toro Rosso. But
:17:47. > :17:52.talking of Friday drivers, we have been joined by Alexander Rossi, who
:17:53. > :17:55.did the Friday morning session for Caterham. That looked like a great
:17:56. > :18:02.opportunity and must have been fabulous to drive in front of your
:18:03. > :18:09.home crowd? Yes. Obviously quite special to be able to drive it home.
:18:10. > :18:13.The last time I had driven a Formula One car was in the States so to
:18:14. > :18:19.comeback was very special to me and something I will remember for a long
:18:20. > :18:23.time. A great opportunity. Different crash helmet for Felipe Massa,
:18:24. > :18:28.celebrating his last Grand Prix with Ferrari. A very significant time for
:18:29. > :18:32.Felipe Massa. He has done this remarkable career, really, with that
:18:33. > :18:38.team from 2006 right through to now. And he has gone very well here in
:18:39. > :18:42.Brazil. He said yesterday one of his finest ever moments was his first
:18:43. > :18:47.victory here in Brazil in 2006. He went on to win it again in 2008, of
:18:48. > :18:51.course, and that was the one where he won the race and thought he was
:18:52. > :18:54.world champion for a few seconds but then Lewis Hamilton did just enough
:18:55. > :19:00.on the last lap to snatch the title away from Massa. It is where his
:19:01. > :19:06.racing career began and he comes from this city, so both Webber and
:19:07. > :19:10.Massa, many thoughts going through their heads this weekend. They are
:19:11. > :19:14.at the other end of their careers from where you are, Alex. You are
:19:15. > :19:20.still trying to break through the door, but, let's not forget, Massa
:19:21. > :19:24.will be continuing with Williams. Yes. It is quite amazing to look
:19:25. > :19:31.back at their careers and see what they have been able to accomplish.
:19:32. > :19:37.He brings such an excellent attitude to the sport. Gary, what have you
:19:38. > :19:43.got for us? I am just looking at the rate behind the front wheel. It is
:19:44. > :19:47.to measure the airflow around the car. There is also a luminous paint
:19:48. > :19:51.which allows us to see the airflow on the surface of the car, but this
:19:52. > :19:56.measures the airflow away from the surface. It is full of little holes
:19:57. > :19:59.and basically you measure the velocity of the air going through
:20:00. > :20:05.the holes and you can measure the direction of the egg going through
:20:06. > :20:09.the holes. These are tiny. Only about no .2 to the millimetre, and
:20:10. > :20:16.if they get locked with a drop of water, it changes everything. -- 0.2
:20:17. > :20:20.millimetres. But they have got the kit on the car and what we are
:20:21. > :20:27.looking at is making sure the kit works for when they do get some dry
:20:28. > :20:31.weather to put on the tyre. Is that significant because they are hoping
:20:32. > :20:36.to run the prototype tyre and get the characteristics of it? Yes,
:20:37. > :20:40.because you want to compare everything. It is a fairly elaborate
:20:41. > :20:43.piece of kit and what they do is a run with the current tyre on the
:20:44. > :20:47.card and then another run with the new tyre on the car at some point in
:20:48. > :20:51.time. Hopefully we will get something today. Then they can
:20:52. > :20:56.analyse how the tyre has changed that airflow. But it is not just
:20:57. > :21:00.about going down a straight line. You have to go around corners,
:21:01. > :21:05.around hairpins, and this is an ideal track. There are a lot of
:21:06. > :21:09.slow, high steering corners, but you need to do it back to back with
:21:10. > :21:14.those two dry weather tyres. Everybody has been out for an
:21:15. > :21:18.installation lap and come straight back in after the cars have been
:21:19. > :21:22.rebuilt from the preceding Grand Prix and that is Felipe Massa's are
:21:23. > :21:28.just being brought in. We were just watching Mark Webber in the pits. We
:21:29. > :21:30.caught up with him yesterday in the discussions drivers or would have
:21:31. > :21:35.with the media on a Thursday. He talked to was a bit about the
:21:36. > :21:41.satisfaction he has had from his career in Formula One.
:21:42. > :21:47.If you look at the whole career, the longevity is something I am
:21:48. > :21:51.obviously proud of. Beasley some big victories along the way, which were
:21:52. > :21:55.good. You always want more and that is human nature. Would you trade in
:21:56. > :21:59.some wins for a championship? Of course. But you are measured on what
:22:00. > :22:06.you had and it at the time and I've believe... I have done what I can
:22:07. > :22:12.do. And with where I come from and how I approached it. And then just a
:22:13. > :22:15.lot of it was sheer determination and hard work and obviously a bit of
:22:16. > :22:20.talent thrown in there may be. But a good career and I'm proud of it.
:22:21. > :22:24.When you arrive here, you obviously arrive bright eyed and bushy tailed.
:22:25. > :22:29.You have your goal, your dream, everything you think of every day.
:22:30. > :22:33.I'd think about every day any more. That is natural and that happens. --
:22:34. > :22:39.I do not think. Obviously you see some politics and you think, OK,
:22:40. > :22:43.that is surprise in, that is different. And the more exposure you
:22:44. > :22:48.get as you go up the grid and the more successful, I suppose, the
:22:49. > :22:53.teams are that you drive for, you accept that. And you keep performing
:22:54. > :22:58.and doing your thing and go with it. That was Mark Webber speaking
:22:59. > :23:02.yesterday. The elder statesman of Formula One. 37 years old and
:23:03. > :23:07.retiring after this race. His team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, is
:23:08. > :23:11.moving into the pit lane. And there are some slightly different
:23:12. > :23:17.dynamics going on on the back of that car? Yes. The rear of the car
:23:18. > :23:22.is just as important because you have to understand what is happening
:23:23. > :23:27.behind the car because that is what is making the whole car work. This
:23:28. > :23:31.elaborate piece of kit, again, doing the same job, measuring that airflow
:23:32. > :23:35.coming out of the diffuser and around the outside of the rear tyre,
:23:36. > :23:39.and the more of this data you can get, the more you can develop the
:23:40. > :23:43.car. And obviously for next year, lots of changes in lots of areas.
:23:44. > :23:47.Exhaust pipes, for example, cannot come out of the same area of the
:23:48. > :23:53.car. So this is the sort of preparation that makes red all the
:23:54. > :23:55.team it is. Yes, they have won the championships. Sebastian Vettel
:23:56. > :23:58.still wants to win this race and get that new record but at the moment,
:23:59. > :24:03.everything today is based on getting knowledge for next year. Sebastian
:24:04. > :24:07.Vettel with yet another new crash helmet design. This one celebrating
:24:08. > :24:11.the return of the Austrian Grand Prix next year. So, some various
:24:12. > :24:18.scenes of Austria on his crash helmet! It is a reintroduction, if
:24:19. > :24:25.you like. We also have a new crack on the calendar in Russia. Plenty to
:24:26. > :24:30.look forward to. And Felipe Massa, yes, the last time we will see him
:24:31. > :24:33.like this but slightly different overalls for Felipe as he gets ready
:24:34. > :24:36.for this last event for the great team. And before switching to
:24:37. > :24:42.Williams, which will be very interesting to see how he gets on
:24:43. > :24:45.there. The line-up, Bottas himself putting in that great performance at
:24:46. > :24:49.the USA Grand Prix, scoring points for the first time and Williams has
:24:50. > :24:55.struggled for pace, no doubt about it, in the season. A close-up
:24:56. > :25:02.there. 11 wins, 15 pole positions that he has all had with Ferrari.
:25:03. > :25:06.Yeah! I wonder if he will become a fashion model after this! A very
:25:07. > :25:11.relaxed atmosphere down in the Ferrari pit, isn't it? It is nice to
:25:12. > :25:17.see that. Massa has this nice record that he has had 11 wins, 12 second
:25:18. > :25:21.places and 13 thirds. All very neat and tidy in terms of his podium
:25:22. > :25:24.finishes over the years. I wonder if there is any chance of him getting
:25:25. > :25:34.another one here to finish in Brazil. Di Resta will be sitting
:25:35. > :25:37.this one out waiting to see what happens and James will be getting
:25:38. > :25:45.another run. He has had several practices already this year. There
:25:46. > :25:48.is Paul Di Resta, just watching from the sidelines at the moment. When
:25:49. > :25:53.you're doing the Friday practice session, how much technical stuff
:25:54. > :25:57.for the team is there that you have to do? That was one of the
:25:58. > :26:11.Israelis, I think, Rosberg running a bit wide. -- one of the Mercedes.
:26:12. > :26:14.You come to the weekend having an idea of what the car is going to do
:26:15. > :26:19.and the conditions are going to be like but you have no idea till you
:26:20. > :26:25.get out onto the track, so you do a lot of correlation... Let's just see
:26:26. > :26:31.what Rosberg is doing here. Then you can tell me. Just went in a bit
:26:32. > :26:39.quick. Yeah. Busy trying to find the brake in turn number one. A big, big
:26:40. > :26:42.area of one up on the outside and a circuit that has evolved over the
:26:43. > :26:47.years. It was first used in its revised form in the early 90s. The
:26:48. > :26:51.original track dates way back, almost to the Second World War time,
:26:52. > :26:55.actually, when it was built, but it wasn't used until the early 70s but
:26:56. > :27:00.it was in a slightly different format. It was swept around the
:27:01. > :27:04.outside and had some dauntingly fast corners, but this section, for
:27:05. > :27:08.example, was or was part of that track so it is nice the track has
:27:09. > :27:17.retained part of its original nature. And that's what the most
:27:18. > :27:24.important corner? -- and that was? Yeah. You often forget about Sao
:27:25. > :27:35.Paulo a cause that is the last race in the -- because it is the last
:27:36. > :27:38.race in the calendar. You have some drivers who are winning to push the
:27:39. > :27:44.boundaries but it is also amazing how short the lap is. It is amazing
:27:45. > :27:57.how quickly you can get around them. In the wet at the moment we are
:27:58. > :28:04.doing 125. Daniel Ricciardo is not in the practice, so he can talk to
:28:05. > :28:11.Tom Clarkson. We are not here to talk about cricket. Cannot make that
:28:12. > :28:17.clear? Whatever you say! How frustrating is it not being in the
:28:18. > :28:20.car? Yeah, I didn't realise how frustrating it is. I'd thought it
:28:21. > :28:23.would be quite nice to have the morning off but I'm already very
:28:24. > :28:30.bored! So I would definitely prefer to be out in the car! What can you
:28:31. > :28:36.tell us about this man? He seemed to do good job last weekend? His raw
:28:37. > :28:40.speed is very good. I'd think he has showed that over the last few years.
:28:41. > :28:46.And he is just maturing pretty much every week, so that is still on his
:28:47. > :28:51.side but he has deftly got the speed. Last week he put out on a new
:28:52. > :28:56.trap and performed ready well, so pretty excited to see how he goes
:28:57. > :29:03.next year. Your last year at Toro Rosso. How do you sum up how it has
:29:04. > :29:07.gone? It is fair to say it has been a bit up and down. We would have
:29:08. > :29:14.liked a bit more overall consistency, and when I'd say that,
:29:15. > :29:19.I mean point-scoring, I guess. I have definitely grown with a lot of
:29:20. > :29:23.the people around me. So it is always nice to be at the end of the
:29:24. > :29:26.season. It is a bit of a relief to have a bit of a break now. I'm a
:29:27. > :29:31.little bit sad as well. Obviously very excited for Red Bull. But sad
:29:32. > :29:36.for a few of the guys who are leaving. The next Grand Prix you go
:29:37. > :29:41.to will be your home race and you will be at Red Bull Racing. Does
:29:42. > :29:46.that fill you with horror? Horror?! Pretty much the opposite of that. I
:29:47. > :29:51.am sure there are going to be lots of eyes on me and all the rest of
:29:52. > :30:00.it. But I am just going to go out there and have fun. Hopefully take
:30:01. > :30:06.it to the front lines. We have just seen the Liz Hamilton spin out on
:30:07. > :30:10.track. How difficult is it in these wet conditions? -- Lewis Hamilton?
:30:11. > :30:15.Last year was one of the most difficult Grand Prix is ever because
:30:16. > :30:20.the changes can be hard. But it is fun at the same time. Now there is
:30:21. > :30:24.not that much standing water. I think for the intermediate, it is
:30:25. > :30:30.quite slippery conditions. So, yeah. We will see how we go this
:30:31. > :30:35.afternoon. The final question, are you confident you can get points
:30:36. > :30:41.this weekend? Iowa's try to be confident. The reality is, we
:30:42. > :30:45.haven't had a very fast race the last few races. -- by always. Maybe
:30:46. > :30:50.these conditions can always give us a bit of hope but in any case I'm
:30:51. > :30:56.going to try to drive drive it as hard as I can. Good luck with that
:30:57. > :31:08.and have a great last race for the team. so, we have seen Lewis
:31:09. > :31:20.Hamilton have his half spin. It was a very graceful half spin, wasn't
:31:21. > :31:28.it? We saw Rosberg going wide earlier. I think we are set up to
:31:29. > :31:32.have an interesting weekend. We are watching Esteban Gutierrez in the
:31:33. > :31:37.Sauber. Tony, they took a real jump in form around Japan time. Let's
:31:38. > :31:44.look at what Perez is doing. He looks like he made a mistake. He did
:31:45. > :31:52.some cadence braking but he got onto the run-off. He was able to use that
:31:53. > :31:56.quite effectively. Gutierrez had good performances around the
:31:57. > :32:05.Japanese Grand Prix but blotted his copybook little bit in the USA? Yes,
:32:06. > :32:11.little bit. He had a baptism is on fire. The rear end did not work. On
:32:12. > :32:17.top of that, he was against Hulkenberg in a tightly packed
:32:18. > :32:22.midfield. He found himself out in Q1 quite often. That was tough for him.
:32:23. > :32:26.But he has grown in confidence since they got the car right. He had a
:32:27. > :32:32.decent chassis underneath him. He had a great drive in Suzuka where
:32:33. > :32:37.they scored points. Hopefully, he will go from strength to strength.
:32:38. > :32:44.There are more drivers than there are seats. That is right. This
:32:45. > :32:49.driver is secure for next year, he is in at Toro Rossos next season.
:32:50. > :32:55.Alexander, this will be his first opportunity to drive a Formula One
:32:56. > :33:02.car in the wet. Actually, he is in a similar situation. The first time I
:33:03. > :33:07.drove one was in practice in Montreal. I had never driven on an
:33:08. > :33:11.intermediate or a wet tyre before. The one thing that is going through
:33:12. > :33:15.your mind is this is not your race car. You do not want to do anything
:33:16. > :33:18.which will hurt the team's progress on the weekend and you do not want
:33:19. > :33:25.to do anything to make the other driver cross with you. I've found by
:33:26. > :33:30.self driving at 80, 85%, just doing the laps and doing the correlation
:33:31. > :33:35.work for the team. At the end of the day, in situations like this, you do
:33:36. > :33:40.not go for a lap time, you just tried to do the conservative option
:33:41. > :33:44.and that is the best thing. It is probably not the time to play the
:33:45. > :33:55.hero. Having said that, he has done a representative time. Let's listen.
:33:56. > :34:03.Really struggling to get the tyres working now. We have deceived the
:34:04. > :34:09.circuit is getting wetter. It is a common refrain from Jenson Button
:34:10. > :34:13.trying to get heat in the tyres. He is one of the most sensitive drivers
:34:14. > :34:19.out there and he does struggle to get heat in the tyres. But if he
:34:20. > :34:24.does get them switched on, particularly in mixed conditions, he
:34:25. > :34:29.is dynamite. He was race when here last year in wet conditions. Quite a
:34:30. > :34:33.lot of cars on track. Normally we get a quieter period where they are
:34:34. > :34:37.all sitting in the pit lane but it is not happening this time. We get
:34:38. > :34:41.to see a lot of action on circuit. Jean-Eric Vergne who set out the
:34:42. > :34:47.Austin practice gets to do the session this morning. Jean-Eric
:34:48. > :34:53.Vergne has not scored any points since the Canadian Grand Prix. That
:34:54. > :34:57.was a long time ago. The race that you did seems a long time ago. He
:34:58. > :35:02.has not been able to score points since then. Daniel Ricciardo has
:35:03. > :35:06.been more consistent on points. In qualifying he has had the edge over
:35:07. > :35:11.Jean-Eric Vergne. Nico Hulkenberg has had a good second half to the
:35:12. > :35:16.season. Difficult with the Sauber. It did not come together with them
:35:17. > :35:20.at the beginning of the year. The changes they have made have really
:35:21. > :35:27.worked. Hulkenberg love this place. He had pole position in 2010 and he
:35:28. > :35:30.led 30 laps here last year. He is very strong here. Interesting
:35:31. > :35:36.talking about Hulkenberg. There was a rumour went Kimi stopped for the
:35:37. > :35:40.last two races that he might drive a Lotus for the last two races.
:35:41. > :35:49.Contractual issues aside, I thought to myself, go and try and put your
:35:50. > :35:54.six frame in a guy which has been driven -- in a car which has been
:35:55. > :35:58.driven by a shorter guy all year. Even if the entity 's head that he
:35:59. > :36:04.has decided that Sauber is the place to be, because it is a good car
:36:05. > :36:11.now... Guess, it has been consecutively good. He goes fifth
:36:12. > :36:15.fastest at the moment. Just a quick reminder on Kimi Raikkonen, it is
:36:16. > :36:21.hey Keiko the line in who gets his second go at locus this weekend. It
:36:22. > :36:25.turns out to be debris in the break dust which caused him to come into
:36:26. > :36:34.the pits at Austin. They had to remove the debris and change the
:36:35. > :36:39.front section of the win but overall the team are happy -- change the
:36:40. > :36:46.front section of the wing. I think he did a decent job. Earlier in the
:36:47. > :36:50.season a rip-off strip got into a duct with Kimi and lead to
:36:51. > :37:06.overheating brakes. Alexander Rossi is with us. He is from Caterham.
:37:07. > :37:13.There is a bit of traffic around with Hamilton trying to get past
:37:14. > :37:20.Giedo van der Garde. Tell me about the atmosphere in the team this
:37:21. > :37:29.weekend. This is our final shot, if you will to be gained ten. We were
:37:30. > :37:36.in this position last year . We have had the edge this year but they were
:37:37. > :37:41.able to sneak in the results. We have been struggling to get 13th
:37:42. > :37:44.position. This race, as we have seen, and over the past four or five
:37:45. > :37:50.years, it is where everything happens. As much as there is tension
:37:51. > :37:55.and hope that goes along with getting that 13th position that we
:37:56. > :38:01.need to get back to 10th in the constructors, there is also a bit of
:38:02. > :38:06.excitement. We have shown that we can make the right decisions and it
:38:07. > :38:14.is about being there at the end to fight. This is the rival team,
:38:15. > :38:19.Rudolf O Gonzales who is the Friday driver for Marussia. I remember
:38:20. > :38:29.talking about this situation. He said when they had Timo Glock in the
:38:30. > :38:37.car who was buried good in the wet, he said they spent all season
:38:38. > :38:45.praying for rain and did not get it. Gary, if you were running either
:38:46. > :38:50.Caterham on Marussia this weekend, how would you approach this weekend.
:38:51. > :38:54.Would you approach it differently to a normal race weekend? The first
:38:55. > :39:01.thing I would not do is have a third driver in the car on Friday. I can
:39:02. > :39:04.only assume they are doing that because they are getting paid to do
:39:05. > :39:11.it. That will compromise his positions the shore. You can only do
:39:12. > :39:17.that best thing possible but you hope they would focus better on the
:39:18. > :39:23.race. The difference between 20th or 21st does not really matter. You
:39:24. > :39:28.need to make sure you are in as good shape as possible. Then the drivers
:39:29. > :39:32.need to keep their car on the road so they need to get confidence on
:39:33. > :39:38.this circuit. If you do all of that right then you cannot do any more.
:39:39. > :39:42.They are in 10th position. It is up to cater to catch them. What
:39:43. > :39:52.Marussia do not want to do is make it easy for them. -- cater room.
:39:53. > :40:02.They do need a lot of retirements. Pat Fry watching from the Ferrari
:40:03. > :40:06.pit wall. We watch the leap to Massa continue round in a Ferrari. He will
:40:07. > :40:09.no doubt have the support of the crowd here this weekend as he comes
:40:10. > :40:14.to the end of his career with the team. At the moment it is bass boat
:40:15. > :40:24.faster from Hamilton. The Mercedes seemed to be running very well. --
:40:25. > :40:35.Rosberg. I was wondering if we would have the 180 degree panning camera
:40:36. > :40:41.and it is back on Felipe Massa's R. -- Felipe Massa's car. Huge ocean
:40:42. > :40:46.for Felipe Massa this weekend. It is his final ride for Ferrari. Earlier,
:40:47. > :40:52.he spoke to Tom about some of his emotions this weekend. It will be
:40:53. > :40:58.very emotional for the moment. Very happy to be here for the last race
:40:59. > :41:01.with Ferrari, after a long time together with Ferrari. Really
:41:02. > :41:08.looking forward to this event and trying to do the best we can on this
:41:09. > :41:12.track. We will have even more emotion at the end. I am really
:41:13. > :41:19.looking forward and try to do the best I can for this last race. To
:41:20. > :41:27.finish this fantastic moment together with Ferrari which is an
:41:28. > :41:34.incredible team which will always be part of my heart. Are you ready to
:41:35. > :41:37.move on to a new team? Yes, always happy and I will be refreshed for
:41:38. > :41:43.the future and looking forward to that. Felipe Massa speaking
:41:44. > :41:48.yesterday. He is looking ahead to a new career at Williams. We are
:41:49. > :41:52.watching Heikki Kovalainen in the Lotus. You have worked with him a
:41:53. > :41:59.lot, Alexander will stop both of you have done Friday practice sessions
:42:00. > :42:07.with Caterham. Did you get a chance to catch up with him after Austin?
:42:08. > :42:12.Briefly I spoke to Catherine, his other half. She said he was so
:42:13. > :42:19.pleased to see a target lap time of the front guys and try and compete
:42:20. > :42:25.with them. We all know that he is talented. He is a race winner. He
:42:26. > :42:29.definitely deserves to be towards the front of the grid. That is a
:42:30. > :42:34.great opportunity for him. Personally, I think he did a good
:42:35. > :42:37.job. You look at what he did in qualifying and everything, he was
:42:38. > :42:41.quite impressive seeing as he had never seen the car before. It will
:42:42. > :42:47.be interesting to see if he keeps the continuity this weekend. From a
:42:48. > :42:52.team boss's view, what would you want to see from Heikki Kovalainen
:42:53. > :42:57.this weekend in his second outing followed his? It is difficult.
:42:58. > :43:02.Obviously, they want to get points in the constructors' championship.
:43:03. > :43:05.He did everything right up to the race will start you just have to go
:43:06. > :43:10.with it and try and make sure that you end up getting the best out of
:43:11. > :43:14.it you can. I think pressure to be on the rostrum sometimes is too
:43:15. > :43:19.high. Just do the best job you can do. If that gets you on the podium,
:43:20. > :43:24.then fine. Just going back to Jenson Button when he talked about lost
:43:25. > :43:31.temperature from the tyres, it is there easy to do. You lose the
:43:32. > :43:34.temperature in the wet and it is difficult to bring back temperature
:43:35. > :43:39.back again. Much more difficult than it would be in the drive. They have
:43:40. > :43:43.just in changing the mechanical setup of the car. They have changed
:43:44. > :43:52.the front torsion bar and the ride height. You can see the mechanics is
:43:53. > :43:56.putting a bit of tape on that. That is the pull rod which operates the
:43:57. > :44:00.suspension. If you let that it will have a lower ride height and if you
:44:01. > :44:03.sure to let the car will ride up from the ground little bit. They
:44:04. > :44:07.have also been doing work on the rear of the car. When Jenson came in
:44:08. > :44:12.I had a look at the front tyres and they have been working quite well.
:44:13. > :44:16.He is still third fastest. The tyres have to work but the problems are
:44:17. > :44:20.when he went further, lost the temperature and then could not get
:44:21. > :44:24.back into it. You're talking about in wet conditions, tyre temperature
:44:25. > :44:30.is still ultra important. The temperature on the track will be
:44:31. > :44:35.around 50 to 55 Celsius. If you are down at 30 you have no grip
:44:36. > :44:40.whatsoever. It is like driving on ice. One of Jenson's problems is to
:44:41. > :44:44.keep the tyre temperature up. The track temperature at the moment is
:44:45. > :44:48.20 degrees, the temperature is just 19. We were in the 30s yesterday. It
:44:49. > :44:53.was a warned day at Interlagos yesterday that it is much cooler.
:44:54. > :44:57.Mercedes is looking good at the moment in the wet with Jenson Button
:44:58. > :45:22.and Sergio Perez third and fourth. We were talking about him earlier.
:45:23. > :45:26.Looking at those times there, as we are just riding with Fernando
:45:27. > :45:30.Alonso, taking it fairly steady at the moment, looking in his mirrors a
:45:31. > :45:34.bit, just having a look around to see whether he is going to get a bit
:45:35. > :45:39.of clear space at this stage. Very gentle from Fernando at the moment.
:45:40. > :45:46.But looking at those times, K2 in these conditions certainly seem to
:45:47. > :45:52.have the edge over Marussia. Is this the early days but in the wet, the
:45:53. > :45:55.downforce is going to play a big role. It is going to give you that
:45:56. > :46:04.bit of grip. That is something that we do have by quite a bit over
:46:05. > :46:13.Marussia where they -- but where they might have something over us is
:46:14. > :46:31.on the sides. Let's just watched... Fantastic! A wheel spin, a bit of
:46:32. > :46:43.sideways through the Curva Do Sol and then it was lovely to see that
:46:44. > :46:52.bit of corrective driving. There is no arguing that in any conditions
:46:53. > :46:59.you put, he is going to be able to extract the most out of the car. He
:47:00. > :47:03.has never won here but he has won the championship on two occasions at
:47:04. > :47:08.this truck, so it is not as if it has been a bad circuit for him by
:47:09. > :47:11.any means. -- track. But when he has been fighting for championships, he
:47:12. > :47:15.is very conscious of what he needs that day and it was not necessarily
:47:16. > :47:19.a victory. That would have been an amazing end to the season. If there
:47:20. > :47:26.is a bit of a damp track, they might be a chance for Ferrari to come back
:47:27. > :47:29.a bit but they simply have not had a car that has been fast enough to
:47:30. > :47:31.consistently challenge red ball through the course of the season.
:47:32. > :47:35.And it has not even been the second fastest car. You have Mercedes and
:47:36. > :47:40.you could argue the Lotus has been a bit quicker. Looking at your
:47:41. > :47:44.figures, Gary, the Lotus has been a faster car, so he has done pretty
:47:45. > :47:49.well to wrap up second in the championship. Yes. He always gets
:47:50. > :47:53.everything that is on the table and I think they have a pretty good
:47:54. > :47:57.start. He had two wins the first five races but over a season, if you
:47:58. > :48:03.look at the way Lotus has used the tyres, probably a better race car.
:48:04. > :48:09.So, Gary, where did it all go wrong for Ferrari because they couldn't
:48:10. > :48:13.seem to get it right in the latter part after their two wins early in
:48:14. > :48:19.the year? At the beginning of the season, the car was quick but the
:48:20. > :48:25.stuff they brought to the car didn't make it go faster. They have been
:48:26. > :48:28.trying the same stuff every weekend so they weren't getting those
:48:29. > :48:34.developments and big steps, the development stages. They weren't
:48:35. > :48:38.finding those two or three tenths of a second. And that gets very
:48:39. > :48:43.confusing. It gets confusing for the guys back at the factory trying to,
:48:44. > :48:49.you know, set a developing direction if you are getting to the track and
:48:50. > :48:56.things don't work. So at the end of the season, there was a lot of head
:48:57. > :49:00.scratching. James will be able to give them that bit of momentum, to
:49:01. > :49:03.be honest, because sometimes you need to believe in yourself. You
:49:04. > :49:07.cannot disbelieve that these things should work. I'd think Ferrari just
:49:08. > :49:13.played around a bit too much this year. It certainly has gone from
:49:14. > :49:17.this point of view. They have the chance of possibly second in the
:49:18. > :49:22.championship but Mercedes do seem to have an edge over those 15 points.
:49:23. > :49:27.Watching Sutil, who is always something of a master in these
:49:28. > :49:33.conditions. It doesn't change anything. He is 12. And a bit of
:49:34. > :49:39.luck for the Russian driver in the Toro Rosso. I should imagine the
:49:40. > :49:43.team might be saying, let's keep that car in one peace. They don't
:49:44. > :49:51.want him to risk it. At, nevertheless, that is impressive. He
:49:52. > :49:55.is definitely showing what he is capable of and I think every time
:49:56. > :50:00.you get any opportunity to drive in that car, you are kind of under a
:50:01. > :50:04.spotlight and you need to show you are able to do it. As long as the
:50:05. > :50:14.rest of the 15 minute session goes well for him. He has to keep it on
:50:15. > :50:17.the island. Just explain to us of the slightly different racing lines
:50:18. > :50:31.in the wet, because you can certainly see he is doing that. The
:50:32. > :50:34.racing line is when you put -- try to keep as much speed as you can but
:50:35. > :50:40.in the wet it doesn't mix with the racing line very well because a lot
:50:41. > :50:44.of the rubber and oil on the track gets under way. So you try to find a
:50:45. > :50:53.way around the racing line, which might sound a bit counterintuitive,
:50:54. > :50:58.but where the last bit of rubber is is where the opportunity is. You try
:50:59. > :51:03.and stay away from where you would normally run and stay away from the
:51:04. > :51:10.curves and try to find grip. And in as many places as you can. This is
:51:11. > :51:14.on board with Grosjean. He is in a twisty section. A bit sideways, a
:51:15. > :51:21.bit sideways, and then he got it back. He broke online and try to
:51:22. > :51:26.turn in online and then the wheel wouldn't take. It then took him to
:51:27. > :51:33.wear the abrasiveness is and then the car hooked up again. So as the
:51:34. > :51:38.track dries, that can work. But you see it in very wet conditions and
:51:39. > :51:43.you kind of follow the white line on the outside of the track and that is
:51:44. > :51:46.where the most grip is. Sometimes the difficulty can be in the
:51:47. > :51:53.crossover. You are using these wide lines. And with Bottas here, using a
:51:54. > :51:57.wide line in places. How do you determine when to get back on the
:51:58. > :52:01.racing line? That can be tricky. You have to cross it at some point and
:52:02. > :52:08.you have to make sure that when you do, the wheel is as straight as
:52:09. > :52:12.possible. If you try to put lateral and longitudinal load in in these
:52:13. > :52:16.conditions and ask too much, you are just going to have a slide. It is
:52:17. > :52:21.normally easy to correct from but the more you slide, you are just
:52:22. > :52:25.losing momentum. This is a tricky section in the wet because it is
:52:26. > :52:32.flat-out easy in the dry but we have seen some big accidents up there in
:52:33. > :52:37.the past. And in fact, we had a crash this time last year going up
:52:38. > :52:40.that hill. Yeah. And you don't think about those normally so when you get
:52:41. > :52:48.to them in the wet, you don't think about them. Vettel is out on six.
:52:49. > :52:51.Mac that was well spotted! That is a bit of a surprise. Having a good
:52:52. > :52:57.look around, seeing what the grip level is, and he has got the error
:52:58. > :53:02.rate on the back of the car, so a bit of interesting... Seems way too
:53:03. > :53:07.early for that. It does. Airy, I don't know if you have had a chance
:53:08. > :53:15.to catch up with any of the prototype tyres for Pirelli. --
:53:16. > :53:21.Gary. What other markings? I spoke to Paul yesterday about it and it is
:53:22. > :53:25.a stage of development. It is a slightly different construction and
:53:26. > :53:30.different detail of how the tread goes on to the tyre. And, as I'd
:53:31. > :53:34.say, I think Sebastian Vettel was a bit early. He has gone into the
:53:35. > :53:39.pits. I don't think he is trying to do a lap time on it because it is
:53:40. > :53:46.starting to rain quite heavily. He has that error rate on the back, so
:53:47. > :53:49.rather than knocking, go out and do something and run with a set of the
:53:50. > :53:53.current tyres and then the development tyres and find out the
:53:54. > :53:57.differences. So just having a look to see. But I wouldn't be surprised
:53:58. > :54:04.if I saw him sliding because it is very slippery. Hamilton just want to
:54:05. > :54:07.work out what it is like out on the slips. Jenson Button made a good
:54:08. > :54:12.tyre strategy here by staying on the slicks longer. Longer than other
:54:13. > :54:16.people as well, and it was part of the reason he came through to win.
:54:17. > :54:21.We just saw Hamilton a moment ago. He had an incident with Hulkenberg.
:54:22. > :54:27.But a good strategy from Button and Hulkenberg to stay on the slicks for
:54:28. > :54:31.longer. Do you think Sebastian Vettel is just doing a bit of
:54:32. > :54:35.research into that whole thing? To be honest, I don't see how that
:54:36. > :54:39.could benefit them. They have been here last year and they know what it
:54:40. > :54:44.is like. The team has all the data from that. What they can learn from
:54:45. > :54:48.this is a bit strange. The only thing is, Gary was saying how the
:54:49. > :54:57.development tyre, how the egg goes over it compare to the current tyre,
:54:58. > :55:05.-- the air. But to be honest, I don't know what they are trying to
:55:06. > :55:11.do. Tom, you are down at Mercedes. I am. Nico Rosberg went out earlier in
:55:12. > :55:17.the session, did two quick lets, -- lapse, came back and they have not
:55:18. > :55:20.touched it. Lewis Hamilton on the other side of the garage. He is out
:55:21. > :55:27.of the car but they have increased the amount of cooling with the front
:55:28. > :55:33.brake ducts, and he is not happy with the balance. Quite noisy! He
:55:34. > :55:41.has complained about some snap oversteer and why he -- while he is
:55:42. > :55:46.out of the car, they have been looking at some worrying blooms in
:55:47. > :55:51.the cockpit, but all quiet and calm on Rosberg's side of the barrage. In
:55:52. > :55:56.other races where he has gone very well, he has all started the weekend
:55:57. > :55:58.well. It is almost as if he needs that Humperdinck 's boost of
:55:59. > :56:01.starting strongly and then he carries that through with him for
:56:02. > :56:10.the rest of the weekend. -- that confidence boost. They will restrict
:56:11. > :56:15.a bit of running here today and get an extra set of intermediates having
:56:16. > :56:19.to use them in this session but, as Michael told us earlier, they will
:56:20. > :56:23.be a bit wary of getting through to many sets of intermediates. This
:56:24. > :56:29.being Brazil, you never know when you are going to need them. He gets
:56:30. > :56:34.his final session of the year here and still very hopeful he will step
:56:35. > :56:37.up to Formula One. I think it is unlikely he will get a race seat
:56:38. > :56:41.next year but he will still have an opportunity to do a further year as
:56:42. > :56:48.a developer and driver and then look at opportunities beyond that.
:56:49. > :56:52.Currently 18th fastest. Just keeping an eye on things, as is Paul Di
:56:53. > :56:55.Resta, looking as though he would much rather be out in the car than
:56:56. > :57:01.standing in the pit, but that is just the way it is this weekend.
:57:02. > :57:05.Currently 18th fastest. Interestingly, neither Mark Webber
:57:06. > :57:10.nor Sebastian Vettel have set a time. We have seen Webber go out on
:57:11. > :57:15.those slicks but he hasn't set a Finnish time or start time on them.
:57:16. > :57:20.And Vettel. So we don't have a lap time from either of them at this
:57:21. > :57:23.point. The top ten, the two Mercedes, then McLaren. Alonso is up
:57:24. > :57:39.to fourth. Grosjean is just outside the top
:57:40. > :57:45.ten, currently on that time. The times are all reasonably similar.
:57:46. > :57:51.Still no confirmation as to where Pastor Maldonado is going to be next
:57:52. > :57:56.year. Tony, still this sort of freeze in the driver market at the
:57:57. > :58:00.moment. It will also put down, most of it, fairly quickly after this
:58:01. > :58:05.race, but we know he is leaving Williams but we don't know for sure
:58:06. > :58:11.where he is going. Yes, it is quite a strange situation. Letters were
:58:12. > :58:17.giving out this message that, you know, we're also talking to Pastor
:58:18. > :58:21.Maldonado, along with Hulkenberg. And you just wondered if Pastor was
:58:22. > :58:28.thinking, well, I am second-best, if you like, in that equation, and I
:58:29. > :58:33.don't really like that. So also talking to Sauber. He will obviously
:58:34. > :58:36.be somewhere but it is a question, I think of the situation with the
:58:37. > :58:40.Lotus financial position and the investment and whether that will
:58:41. > :58:44.happen. Still waiting to hear the Lotus get that investment that they
:58:45. > :58:50.would so desperately like to have to move forward and know exactly where
:58:51. > :58:55.they stand for next year. Interestingly, Vettel has gone out
:58:56. > :59:01.on the medium compound tyre but it is the prototype, so no marking on
:59:02. > :59:05.the side. So they are trying to get Akuila error readings but is that
:59:06. > :59:13.relevant in terms of the conditions? -- get back-to-back. As a driver, it
:59:14. > :59:22.has got to be very difficult. I don't know. I'll bet he is
:59:23. > :59:27.definitely not loving this. RADIO: Straight engage, please. I
:59:28. > :59:31.guess they have the information but this is the time when he would
:59:32. > :59:36.prefer maybe a reserve or development tyre. Because that seems
:59:37. > :59:41.quite stressful and annoying, I think. Gary, do you think they will
:59:42. > :59:45.have been able to learn a bit about airflow? You were saying earlier all
:59:46. > :59:51.those tubes will be blocked up with water anyway? Yes, it is a lost
:59:52. > :59:55.cause trying to do anything now. As far as the tyre pressure is
:59:56. > :59:59.concerned, I'm sure they put it up to the correct pressure but it would
:00:00. > :00:05.be running on the track if it was hot. But trying to make it move on
:00:06. > :00:08.the rim, as such, that is when you want to measure. It doesn't matter
:00:09. > :00:14.what is happening too much coming down the street. It is when you are
:00:15. > :00:16.on the mid-corner when the tyre is distorted, and that is when you want
:00:17. > :00:22.to know what the characteristics are like. But if they are not going to
:00:23. > :00:25.get any running on it, they might as well do something. Thank you for
:00:26. > :00:37.your questions and comments coming through. Just using that hashed --
:00:38. > :00:43.hash tag #bbcf1. Of course, he is setting new records all the time.
:00:44. > :00:57.The worst moments were Vettel being jeered and booed. We did not like to
:00:58. > :01:02.hear that at all. Another saying, my favourite moment of the season has
:01:03. > :01:07.to be Hamilton's win in Hungary. But David saying, the tyre rule
:01:08. > :01:16.destroyed competition. Red Bull have walked it easily since then. Another
:01:17. > :01:23.person said their favourite podium would be first Aussie Grit, that
:01:24. > :01:28.would be Mark Webber. We have a question which has come in from
:01:29. > :01:35.Callum and we can throw this to Alexander, what do we think about
:01:36. > :01:44.Caterham considering Marcus Ericsson next year? Marcus Ericsson has been
:01:45. > :01:52.racing against you in GP to this year. He has been racing in GP to
:01:53. > :01:56.for several years. -- GP two. We understand he is one of several
:01:57. > :02:04.drivers which cater are considering. What are your thoughts? To be
:02:05. > :02:14.honest, the first I heard of that was on BBC news last night. I have
:02:15. > :02:21.no idea. It looks a bit worse to us, people are struggling to go faster.
:02:22. > :02:27.That was equal to the fastest car out there which is Grosjean. Lap
:02:28. > :02:32.times are not as quick as they were earlier because the track conditions
:02:33. > :02:37.are worse than when Hamilton and Rosberg set their pace earlier. He
:02:38. > :02:42.is one of the drivers under consideration. It is clear that
:02:43. > :02:46.Heikki Kovalainen is still being talked to at Caterham. It seems like
:02:47. > :02:55.a big pool of drivers. Hopefully yourself included? The seats are
:02:56. > :03:00.filling up. Hopefully the remaining drivers will go to the few seats
:03:01. > :03:07.which have not been talked about which is the two at Caterham and the
:03:08. > :03:17.one at Marussia. There are semi-factors that go into it. I have
:03:18. > :03:22.no idea. And yourself, you are still up in the air at the moment? Again,
:03:23. > :03:28.the answer is the same as it has been. I don't know. I guess we have
:03:29. > :03:32.to wait and see. The focus is so much onto this weekend. There is a
:03:33. > :03:35.lot of pressure on the team and the management and the engineers to pull
:03:36. > :03:40.something out. We will know more after the weekend. I think the whole
:03:41. > :03:46.paddock is in the same frame of mind. Talking to the senior drivers
:03:47. > :03:50.yesterday, Adrian Sutil was saying even though he had a contract, he
:03:51. > :03:56.added that sometimes in September, it is October and then mid-November.
:03:57. > :04:01.We went to speak to Paul di Resta and he said he has never been so in
:04:02. > :04:05.the dark. It is a regrettable situation for these guys. Very
:04:06. > :04:09.nervous. It is so late. Sergio Perez was put back into the market in
:04:10. > :04:17.mid-November with a lot of money on him. In terms of running a team, for
:04:18. > :04:22.your employees, don't forget the big teams have 500 employees, for your
:04:23. > :04:30.people you need to tell them at some point who is going to be driving for
:04:31. > :04:34.you? In fact, before we go to Gary, let's go to one of those drivers who
:04:35. > :04:42.is in that sit duration and hoping to sign up again former Russia, Max
:04:43. > :04:50.Chilton. Max, not describe your mood right now? It has been an important
:04:51. > :04:54.weekend for us. It would be nice to go and experience the rain. I have
:04:55. > :05:00.never driven here. I think we all know that rain will play the part in
:05:01. > :05:05.the weekend. It was an interesting call from the team not put you in
:05:06. > :05:09.the car. Why was that? You have to support the young drivers. I was in
:05:10. > :05:15.that position last year. I did not get a run in the last race weekend.
:05:16. > :05:19.There are plenty of other people missing the first session here today
:05:20. > :05:26.so I have got to make sure I take as much practice as I can. What are the
:05:27. > :05:32.drivers saying over the radio about the track conditions? They are OK.
:05:33. > :05:37.At least they are consistent. They are struggling with balance but I am
:05:38. > :05:43.sure everyone else's. Just a word on the whole weekend, such a massive
:05:44. > :05:47.weekend for Marussia. Is everybody feeling relaxed? Yes, the way you
:05:48. > :05:53.have to treat it is like a normal race weekend. It has obviously got a
:05:54. > :05:58.bit of added pressure because we are in this position at the same time as
:05:59. > :06:03.last year. We lost with five laps to go. I just pray it will be a dry
:06:04. > :06:12.race on Sunday. Good luck. Thank you. Last it was bitterly Petrov who
:06:13. > :06:21.grabbed the important issue with five laps to go -- bitterly Petrov.
:06:22. > :06:25.-- Vitaly Petrov. You need to give your team something to look at for
:06:26. > :06:30.the following year. Izzy Nibley, from that point of view they need to
:06:31. > :06:39.start announcing drivers? Yes, they do. Next year we are talking about
:06:40. > :06:43.the complication of all this stuff and the electronics which will be
:06:44. > :06:49.around the car. You have to find places to put all that stuff. You
:06:50. > :06:53.need the driver and you practice with all the wiring. Lewis Hamilton
:06:54. > :06:57.was getting out of the car and they were adjusting wiring. These cars
:06:58. > :07:00.are full of wires and they are all packed around the driver and in the
:07:01. > :07:05.cop that area. From a team point of view and a design point of view you
:07:06. > :07:09.need to know the driver pretty soon because if you suddenly get a tall
:07:10. > :07:15.guy you have a big problem if you have allocated boxes where he needs
:07:16. > :07:19.to sit. It is pretty irresponsible for the management of the team not
:07:20. > :07:22.have a big plan. The plan is doing next year as best you can and that
:07:23. > :07:30.means getting the drivers in place as early as possible. Hopefully soon
:07:31. > :07:35.we will begin to know a bit more about some of those teams. Mark
:07:36. > :07:39.Webber is in the pit lane at the moment in his garage waiting to come
:07:40. > :07:45.back out. There is very little activity on circuit at the moment.
:07:46. > :07:49.There are five cars on track and 17 cars in the Garrard being worked on
:07:50. > :07:56.at the moment. It has been quite tricky in terms of conditions.
:07:57. > :08:10.Just crossing the line there is Esteban Gutierrez. Gonzalez is on
:08:11. > :08:16.track as well. It is still pretty slippery out there. The track itself
:08:17. > :08:19.has quite a lot of drainage channels and grooves cut into it. You can
:08:20. > :08:24.pick them up on camera in a few places. That is to help with the
:08:25. > :08:28.drainage. Gary, when we were walking round yesterday, the elevation
:08:29. > :08:32.change means you have areas where is it does rain hard, the water will
:08:33. > :08:38.pour off the hillside, went it? You cannot stop that. There are slots in
:08:39. > :08:44.the track, 50 millimetres apart all round the track, areas for the water
:08:45. > :08:47.to run. Because of the elevation change you will always get a river
:08:48. > :08:52.somewhere going across the track. That is what catches you out. If you
:08:53. > :08:56.can get consistent grip levels all the way through the track it is
:08:57. > :09:08.pretty good. I was talking to Lewis Hamilton early on. We saw Alonso as
:09:09. > :09:15.well and you get caught out and end up on the grass. The other bits of
:09:16. > :09:18.the track have a lot of grass. When you have lots of things buried in
:09:19. > :09:30.the grasslands is muddy, you have to be altered careful.
:09:31. > :09:41.The intermediate tyre will be past its best now. It is fairly quiet on
:09:42. > :09:47.track. Some dry ice on the Red Bull. Some extra cooling, presumably.
:09:48. > :09:52.Sebastian Vettel had a brilliant victory last time out. His eighth
:09:53. > :09:56.consecutive race win. Going for more records this weekend. We caught up
:09:57. > :10:03.with Sebastian yesterday and asked him about his celebrations and
:10:04. > :10:09.looking for more records. It was quite a good night we had on
:10:10. > :10:16.Sunday. Let's leave it there. Monday I was in worse shape than on Sunday.
:10:17. > :10:26.But, yes, obviously it was a great Sunday afternoon and very special.
:10:27. > :10:29.It is not what keeps me going but equally, it means a lot when you
:10:30. > :10:33.start to realise these things. I think generally this year has been
:10:34. > :10:39.incredible in this regard. I'm looking forward to the winter break.
:10:40. > :10:45.You have to calm down and let all the things sink in. Before he goes
:10:46. > :10:50.into the winter break he has the chance to match the record of nine
:10:51. > :10:54.consecutive wins. But that was done over two seasons and he is looking
:10:55. > :11:00.to achieve it in one season. Who knows what will happen this weekend?
:11:01. > :11:05.Tony, it has been a record-breaking season by Sebastian Vettel. Do you
:11:06. > :11:10.see that continuing next year? None of us can tell because of the new
:11:11. > :11:16.rules but Red Bull, at the end of the day, is the top team. It is a
:11:17. > :11:22.good question and I was talking to Christian Horner about that. Ken is
:11:23. > :11:27.Melbourne next year, what are your chances, do you think? And he threw
:11:28. > :11:30.his arms up and said, who knows? He said the chances of finishing
:11:31. > :11:34.Melbourne next year is 50-50 and it probably is for everyone else on the
:11:35. > :11:44.grid. It shows you that reliability is a big factor. Gary, you are at
:11:45. > :11:50.Sauber. Jenson Button could not get tyre temperature. One thing which
:11:51. > :11:54.contributes to that is the brakes. In the wet you cannot break as late.
:11:55. > :11:59.If you look at Nico Hulkenberg's are you can see the front brake duct and
:12:00. > :12:03.that is all tape on it. Normally that would be a whole for the dry
:12:04. > :12:06.but for the wet you have to take it up. The brakes do not work as
:12:07. > :12:10.efficiently few do not get the heat into them. They do not work until
:12:11. > :12:15.about 300 degrees and then they come in with a bang. You want keep the
:12:16. > :12:18.temperature up as much as possible. The temperature helps to warm the
:12:19. > :12:24.tie-up. You're getting better braking in the wet and keeping the
:12:25. > :12:29.front tyre temperature. It is a very important part of treating the cars
:12:30. > :12:35.for the conditions. Gutierrez is doing a number of laps there. He has
:12:36. > :12:39.done 20 laps so far. I think that is the most of everybody. Rosberg did
:12:40. > :12:44.that early on. Barton has done 14 but has not been in the car in a
:12:45. > :12:49.little while. Dashmack Jenson Button. Thank you for your comments
:12:50. > :12:53.using the hashtag #bbcf1. Paul said the best thing about 2013 was
:12:54. > :12:58.Grosjean showing the world what I knew he could do on track. The worst
:12:59. > :13:02.was the ongoing money issues at Lotus. It sounds like Paul is a
:13:03. > :13:07.Lotus fan. It has been an up-and-down season. A couple of
:13:08. > :13:11.questions coming in. There is one I would like to ask you, Alexander,
:13:12. > :13:16.because you have had some experience with the simulator, what will next
:13:17. > :13:24.year's cars be like to drive? It will be very interesting. Until you
:13:25. > :13:29.get the car out on track you do not know. The one thing we are missing
:13:30. > :13:33.is the tyre model. That will be a massive determining factor in the
:13:34. > :13:38.performance of the car and the characteristics of it. Generally,
:13:39. > :13:44.the driving style will be different. We have not had turbo-charged
:13:45. > :13:47.engines for three decades. It will be something that none of the
:13:48. > :13:52.drivers will have had experience of in the past. While the technology
:13:53. > :13:56.was quite good, the turbo lag will not be massive. It still will be
:13:57. > :14:00.that little bit. I think because none of us have driven turbo engines
:14:01. > :14:04.it will be a wake-up call. To explain exactly what it is going to
:14:05. > :14:10.be like is impossible because we do not know what the tyres will be
:14:11. > :14:15.like. I think it will take a bit of adaptation and a slightly different
:14:16. > :14:23.approach in terms of how we work with the power application. That
:14:24. > :14:30.question came from Motorsport pit. I can tell you that we will be doing
:14:31. > :14:34.some coverage on the rules coverage. Do tune in for our coverage across
:14:35. > :14:39.the weekend. Philip is asking what would we pick as our favourite Mark
:14:40. > :14:46.Webber moment of his Formula One career? That is a good question.
:14:47. > :14:52.Tony, does anything spring to mind for you? Yes, for me it is his
:14:53. > :14:56.Monaco 2010 win. It was a fantastic drive. There were a number of safety
:14:57. > :15:01.cars, he controlled the race and he did it from pole position. It is
:15:02. > :15:06.exactly the kind of race a driver likes to win. That is a very good
:15:07. > :15:10.point. For me in some ways, it has always been his performances at
:15:11. > :15:13.Silverstone. He won here last year and in fact, that was his last
:15:14. > :15:18.victory as well. There was the other victory when he said not bad for a
:15:19. > :15:23.number two driver. His relationship for Silverstone has been tremendous.
:15:24. > :15:29.I remember commentating on a 4,003,000 race in the wet. He always
:15:30. > :15:41.loved that circuit -- formula 3000 race. Yes, he is quick and possibly
:15:42. > :15:47.quicker than Vettel. He has been to places like Barcelona, Silverstone,
:15:48. > :15:55.and he is tremendous. A lot of the technique stuff where he doesn't
:15:56. > :16:03.match Sebastian Vettel and then blowing exhausts and that sort of
:16:04. > :16:07.thing. But he loves it. Once this rain has stopped, we don't expect
:16:08. > :16:15.any more rain, so there is a chance it will be improving from now on.
:16:16. > :16:21.That is good to hear! And your thoughts on Williams? Yes. They have
:16:22. > :16:25.rarely had a good drive and got some points, and just to show the sort of
:16:26. > :16:31.combinations that the teams bring, if you look at the front wing on
:16:32. > :16:35.this car, it is a recovery or revival of last year's front wing
:16:36. > :16:40.assembly. That twisted section. That was all last year's car. And they
:16:41. > :16:44.went away from that at the beginning of the year. But if you look at that
:16:45. > :16:49.thick under section, just under the nose, it is trying to get the front
:16:50. > :16:55.downforce to get good airflow to the back of the car. And if we go down
:16:56. > :17:00.to these other noses down here, there is quite a selection of them.
:17:01. > :17:03.The interesting one for me is the one at the top. You can see here
:17:04. > :17:09.there is a difference in how this front wing works. This is the area
:17:10. > :17:15.where it is so critical because it is right at the front of the front
:17:16. > :17:19.tyre. The consistency of downforce to get is quite critical. But you
:17:20. > :17:23.can also see this section of the win, it is also different as well.
:17:24. > :17:33.So a thicker nose profile and the one below has a very thin nose
:17:34. > :17:36.profile. This one has this in here. So a huge combination of different
:17:37. > :17:42.parts all with slightly different characteristics, but still going
:17:43. > :17:47.back to last year's nose and front wing. It is quite interesting, that,
:17:48. > :17:52.because we talked earlier about Ferrari and they are trying to go
:17:53. > :17:55.forward, but for Williams to go forward, they have had to go back a
:17:56. > :18:02.bit. So an interesting combination of bits. Can you show us how much
:18:03. > :18:09.narrower the front wing will be? Well, 75 millimetres, so in old
:18:10. > :18:13.money, that is three inches. It makes it very critical because at
:18:14. > :18:19.the moment, this is as wide as the front tyre. So you can turn this
:18:20. > :18:27.airflow around that centre without any problem. When that wing comes in
:18:28. > :18:30.75 millimetres narrower, it will have a much larger effect,
:18:31. > :18:34.especially when the car has steering lock, because, as I was saying
:18:35. > :18:38.earlier, they go down the straight OK, these racing cars, but when you
:18:39. > :18:46.have the steering lock on, that is when you need the car to have good
:18:47. > :18:50.aerodynamics and balance. Thank you for that. Fascinating stuff. And we
:18:51. > :18:55.are looking at Sebastian Vettel there, as he is presumably going to
:18:56. > :18:59.be coming out on track. He has done five laps out and in. Testing out
:19:00. > :19:04.different things, running the other tyre. Webber has established a lap
:19:05. > :19:12.time in this session but obviously the track not as quick as it was
:19:13. > :19:16.when Rosberg did his lap earlier. His intermediate tyres are quite
:19:17. > :19:21.fresh, of course, because he has already done a run until now, so
:19:22. > :19:28.when Vettel goes out, he has nice fresh intermediates to use. Yes. It
:19:29. > :19:33.makes a big difference. It behaves like a slick in that the
:19:34. > :19:37.intermediate does wear when it gets Twitter and pitcher and starts to
:19:38. > :19:43.wear quite quickly. -- when it gets to a temperature. When you have the
:19:44. > :19:49.full wet, as long as the conditions stay wet, he can use it for the full
:19:50. > :19:57.race if he needs to, but you would expect Mark and Sebastian Vettel to
:19:58. > :20:02.be able to go quite quickly. This may well be Ross Brawn's final Grand
:20:03. > :20:07.Prix as well. We don't know whether he will be around in any role in
:20:08. > :20:12.Formula One. This gets lost in all the other things going on. Tom, what
:20:13. > :20:16.have you got for us? The good news for us is that the rain has pretty
:20:17. > :20:30.much stopped in the pit lane. McLaren are thinking it will dry out
:20:31. > :20:35.because both Jenson's cars have been got ready to get out. Red Bull want
:20:36. > :20:38.to join in. They don't think the track will dry completely because
:20:39. > :20:41.there is only 20 minutes of the session to go, but they think it
:20:42. > :20:46.will be dry enough to get some meaningful data for next season.
:20:47. > :20:51.This is a good shot because it does show that hill through the first
:20:52. > :20:54.corner. Gary and I walked down there yesterday and it is almost like a
:20:55. > :21:01.refresher when you go out there to see how steep it is. You don't often
:21:02. > :21:09.get that kind of impression. It is a massive surprise how much elevation
:21:10. > :21:17.there is here. In 2008, when I was racing, it was quite impressive how
:21:18. > :21:20.steep it is the speed you can carry through one and two. It is why when
:21:21. > :21:31.everybody comes here they are reminded what a great track it is.
:21:32. > :21:35.Amazing how how much -- how much elevation it has. That huge hill up
:21:36. > :21:39.to turn number one, it is characteristic of the circuit, but
:21:40. > :21:46.it also makes it quite interesting. It does. It is corners like this
:21:47. > :21:56.where drivers have to adapt their style a bit, whereas is every -- if
:21:57. > :22:00.every corner is the same... When it is different, you kind of have to
:22:01. > :22:08.adapt it for each corner, which is another thing that separates the
:22:09. > :22:15.drivers and makes the very good ones stand out. We did not get to ask you
:22:16. > :22:25.what your favourite Webber moment was? His first win for a whole. It
:22:26. > :22:28.was quite special. -- for Red Bull. I think he had a drive through and
:22:29. > :22:33.it was all kind of going against him. He was still able to pull it
:22:34. > :22:39.out and then to win a race like that was quite special. I agree. That was
:22:40. > :22:47.astonishing. And his first ever victory as well, Tony? Yes. And if
:22:48. > :22:55.you are talking about moments, what about when he passed Fernando
:22:56. > :22:59.Alonso? Yes. That requires a bit of bravery. It just goes to show you
:23:00. > :23:08.Mark is a great driver. He has been a bit overshadowed by Sebastien.
:23:09. > :23:14.Sarah Baxter has said, she agrees with you, Germany 2009 will be my
:23:15. > :23:22.favourite Webber Drive. A first win is always special. Tom, what is your
:23:23. > :23:27.favourite memory? I have lots but I was there in febrile re-2009 when he
:23:28. > :23:35.tested for the first time after his leg raking shunt the previous
:23:36. > :23:39.November. -- February 2009. Back then, it was only ten weeks after
:23:40. > :23:43.the accident and he was still walking on crutches and he made the
:23:44. > :23:46.decision he didn't want to walk across the paddock with crutches
:23:47. > :23:50.because he thought it would look too stupid. So just to watch him
:23:51. > :23:56.hobbling from the motorhome over to the car, climbing and do 82 laps on
:23:57. > :24:01.a leg that was still so freshly broken was very, very special. Think
:24:02. > :24:08.it was the defining moment of his career, that late-breaking shunt.
:24:09. > :24:11.Everybody had been wanting to get a fast car, David Coulthard had
:24:12. > :24:15.retired at the end of the year and thought he was going to be the
:24:16. > :24:22.number one driver and then, bang, you broke that leg. It all changed
:24:23. > :24:26.after that. -- he broke. And that was a cycling accident, not a motor
:24:27. > :24:39.accident, of course. I'd think we will see a bit of a chat with him
:24:40. > :24:43.from you this weekend? -- I. Yes. I actually flew to Melbourne with him
:24:44. > :24:49.in 2002 when he made his debut and went on to finish fifth. Just a huge
:24:50. > :24:52.victory for him. And of course here we are in Melbourne this weekend and
:24:53. > :25:02.we are going to catch up with him on race morning and get his thoughts.
:25:03. > :25:08.So tune in, join us. That will be on Sunday at 3pm, so I hope you can
:25:09. > :25:11.join us for that. Another saying, my favourite Webber moment is him
:25:12. > :25:20.scoring points on his home race at his debut. Just to remind you,
:25:21. > :25:23.Alonso and Webber both drove former Nardi. They both had exactly the
:25:24. > :25:32.same number of Grand Prix is entered in their career. Even those Alonso
:25:33. > :25:35.Mr year. But he started the year earlier and then set out as a test
:25:36. > :25:39.driver for Renault, they have started out with exactly the same
:25:40. > :25:53.number of grant breeze. -- Alonso missed a year. -- same number of
:25:54. > :25:57.Grand Prix. Yes, it gotten started. And he is very satisfied with the
:25:58. > :26:02.career he has had but I am sure he would have loved the championship.
:26:03. > :26:15.It was very close in 09. And then in ten as well. Do you have a special
:26:16. > :26:21.Mark Webber moment, Gary? My thing really is his honesty. All the way
:26:22. > :26:26.through his career. When he won Silverstone at the end of the race,
:26:27. > :26:31.he said, not bad for a number two. And I think you expressed his
:26:32. > :26:37.opinion. That is the honesty of Mark Webber and that is what we will miss
:26:38. > :26:41.most. Yes, certainly from a journalist's point of view I have to
:26:42. > :26:45.agree with that, because if you ever wanted a straight down the middle,
:26:46. > :26:53.no-nonsense quote comic he was your guy. We will miss that. Some more of
:26:54. > :27:00.your comments coming in. Thank you very much. Liam saying, the worst
:27:01. > :27:05.moment for him in 2013 was seeing Paul Di Resta lose third in Bahrain.
:27:06. > :27:12.And the best moment, seeing Kimi win. And the young Russian there you
:27:13. > :27:19.are seeing, who is now driving at Toro Rosso, or, well, doing the
:27:20. > :27:24.practice, we will be hearing from him later in practice session number
:27:25. > :27:31.two. I hope you can join us for that to hear how he got on. That was Nico
:27:32. > :27:37.Rosberg a moment ago having to use a bit more than planned. Yes. That is
:27:38. > :27:45.the unfortunate thing about these tracks. You can make smaller
:27:46. > :27:57.mistakes. -- fortunate thing. But you can get away with them. It keeps
:27:58. > :28:07.things safer. We saw Grosjean go off that corner, Mergulho, last year. It
:28:08. > :28:11.is still a practice session and you do want to kind of be able to find
:28:12. > :28:14.elements so that when you go into qualifying in the all-important
:28:15. > :28:18.race, you kind of know what to expect and what you can get away
:28:19. > :28:30.with. A couple of more comments from you. Dean says, the worst was
:28:31. > :28:38.Malaysia. We all know what that was. Vettel snatching victory. Down the
:28:39. > :28:43.insight into the hairpin. The best thing this season has been the
:28:44. > :28:47.dominance of Vettel and the worst thing is Jenson without a podium. By
:28:48. > :28:54.no lots of you listening big McLaren fans and it has been a tough year
:28:55. > :29:02.for you. -- I know that lots of you. And another says, his favourite
:29:03. > :29:09.moment was Bottas getting points. The worst, Red Bull's procession to
:29:10. > :29:16.the title again, says John. And Jenny says, best moment, Howden's
:29:17. > :29:25.first win with Mercedes. -- Hamilton's first. Hamilton has had
:29:26. > :29:29.one win so far this year. Rosberg also taking victories for the team
:29:30. > :29:34.and it has been a huge jump. But where they were last year, you know,
:29:35. > :29:38.Michael Schumacher, along with the co-Rothberg, that combination,
:29:39. > :29:44.struggling and then suddenly they are qualifying up front all the
:29:45. > :29:50.time. -- Nico Rosberg. But it has been a great season from them.
:29:51. > :29:55.Absolutely. You have to look at it slightly in historical context. We
:29:56. > :29:59.have the double diffuser thing which gave them that fantastic start to
:30:00. > :30:03.the year but then they had to cut the budget. Mercedes then came in
:30:04. > :30:08.and bought it later. But for the next year, they made something like
:30:09. > :30:13.40% staff cuts. And it was takes time to come through. And if you
:30:14. > :30:18.look at the position in the championships, it tends to translate
:30:19. > :30:25.the following year. Last year they had got that going backwards, they
:30:26. > :30:33.were worse in 2011 than 2010, worse in 2012 than 11 end points. They
:30:34. > :30:39.went from a wind tunnel, recruited a lot of personnel. And then, that was
:30:40. > :30:44.all put in place last year and it has come through this year. We have
:30:45. > :30:48.seen the benefits of that and I think one season they were scoring
:30:49. > :30:55.seven points race and this year it has been 19 points race. A massive,
:30:56. > :30:58.massive jump. Harry, you have seen a lot of changes. A bit frustrated
:30:59. > :31:08.that things didn't move on but they do seem to have made that big-league
:31:09. > :31:13.this year? Yes, they have made a big leap. Speaking to some of the guys I
:31:14. > :31:18.know they did not expect them to be quite as competitive. The car is
:31:19. > :31:22.good at lap times but they have a problem with big points in the
:31:23. > :31:25.Championship. They are still lagging behind Red Bull as far as that
:31:26. > :31:29.performance is concerned. They brought out a lot of high-end
:31:30. > :31:34.technical staff. No matter what you are doing in a racing car, egos do
:31:35. > :31:39.come into it. Getting all those people to work together is quite
:31:40. > :31:44.tough. Ross has done a great job of putting it all together. The thought
:31:45. > :31:51.of Ross not being there next year, that is quite sad. They have debt
:31:52. > :31:56.the numbers. We are seeing Sebastian Vettel who has gone fifth fastest in
:31:57. > :32:02.this session. Reasonable lap times, Alexander, being produced. It does
:32:03. > :32:05.look as if track conditions may be better for some improvement in times
:32:06. > :32:10.in the last few minutes. Whether McLaren will get what they want to
:32:11. > :32:16.run a prototype car, I'm not that sure. It shows what a good lap that
:32:17. > :32:23.was from Nick Coad the start of the session. The track was drier than it
:32:24. > :32:27.was then -- Niccolo. I do not know if it is to do with the track
:32:28. > :32:31.entering that stage where it is getting a bit greasy. Even though
:32:32. > :32:44.there is less water on the track you have less grip. Vettel has gone
:32:45. > :32:52.quicker than he had done. He has done one of the biggest improvements
:32:53. > :33:01.we have seen. He goes third fastest. Rosberg and Hamilton still first and
:33:02. > :33:09.second. That is James Colorado. He is 18. I was speaking to him this
:33:10. > :33:15.morning and he said Force India have to be careful because of engine
:33:16. > :33:22.mileage. He was a bit sceptical about whether he would even be able
:33:23. > :33:27.to drive this weekend. I think that was Darren Heath that we had a quick
:33:28. > :33:32.look trough, one of the famous F1 snappers getting more for the
:33:33. > :33:38.collection. We have 12 cars on track at this stage. We have another 90
:33:39. > :33:44.minute session to go later on today. We will see if the track dries up a
:33:45. > :33:54.little bit for that one. Maldonado is 17th quickest. The two Williams
:33:55. > :33:57.cars are similar in terms of place. There is Claire Williams, deputy
:33:58. > :34:05.team principal. And good to see that Sir Frank is here this weekend. What
:34:06. > :34:12.did you think of Valterri Bottas out in Austin? I was hoping that we
:34:13. > :34:19.would get another 2012 situation. It looked in qualifying bit about Terry
:34:20. > :34:25.had the pace. He said after the session that he made a couple of
:34:26. > :34:29.mistakes. For a young driver to see another young driver being able to
:34:30. > :34:33.compete in another car that is not that competitive gives you hope
:34:34. > :34:44.about what you are doing. I think everyone was very happy for him.
:34:45. > :34:48.Gary, where are we with tyre choice? Each driver gets three sets of wet
:34:49. > :34:52.tyres and four sets of intermediates. If you use one of the
:34:53. > :34:59.sets of intermediates on the Friday practice you get a set to place it
:35:00. > :35:05.-- replace it. Nico Rosberg, he had fresh tyres which are much, much
:35:06. > :35:09.better. They have more grip. They cut their way through the water. I
:35:10. > :35:13.think they are slower now because everyone will have stayed on the
:35:14. > :35:19.same set of intermediate tyres and they have lost that edge. The
:35:20. > :35:25.service is very abrasive. I think that is why the Times now now not so
:35:26. > :35:31.representative. That is making sense. Vettel is moving up the order
:35:32. > :35:39.of bit. I do not think anyone else's leaping up the order. Mark Webber is
:35:40. > :35:43.currently six. Daniil Kvyat's time from early on is holding up well.
:35:44. > :35:49.That is a good performance from the Russian. He will go into his first
:35:50. > :35:55.full season in 2014. He is finishing off a sort of apprenticeship this
:35:56. > :35:58.year. A couple more of your comments coming in, the best and worst
:35:59. > :36:04.moments of the 2013 Formula One season. Shannon said the best thing
:36:05. > :36:07.was Sebastian celebrating winning the Championship with the Indian
:36:08. > :36:12.fans with the doughnuts and the worst was being penalised for it. He
:36:13. > :36:16.seems to have learnt a way to do doughnuts and not be penalised for
:36:17. > :36:23.it so he has learned that. There is Maldonado. The part of the track
:36:24. > :36:35.where Vettel was facing the wrong way. Gutierrez ran off the track.
:36:36. > :36:40.Then he sorted it all out. That looked like a different incident. I
:36:41. > :36:47.think it was the same one. Definitely a bit of a moment there.
:36:48. > :36:53.A couple more of your best and worst moments. Daniel said the best one
:36:54. > :36:59.had to be Fernando's two wins in China and Spain. That did not go
:37:00. > :37:11.quite right. That was a good carting technique. He was struggling a
:37:12. > :37:24.little bit on that lap. Mark Webber comes across the line. Tom, you have
:37:25. > :37:29.got a comment about McLaren. Yes. They have been watching the lap
:37:30. > :37:32.times very closely. We are still 15 seconds of a competitive drive
:37:33. > :37:41.time. They had these drive prototype tyres. They had deemed it is still
:37:42. > :37:46.too wet for dry tyres. It is a shame they have not had that chance. I
:37:47. > :37:49.suppose it was worth trying to aim for it at least. A couple more of
:37:50. > :37:56.your comments from Mark Webber. A good one from James Thomas. He said,
:37:57. > :38:02.who could forget Mark's spectacular 360 a born Philip in Valencia in
:38:03. > :38:07.2010? It was not quite three and 60 in the air, he went up and crashed
:38:08. > :38:12.down. That was one of the most frightening looking accidents. It
:38:13. > :38:16.was not the flight and the coming down, it was the contact with the
:38:17. > :38:20.barrier that took the wind out of his sails. Those scary moments, you
:38:21. > :38:24.do not know where that will end up. It was not the first time for Mark.
:38:25. > :38:29.He did it twice in a Mercedes sports car. He is going back there with a
:38:30. > :38:34.Porsche and he said he wants to do it on the ground this time. That was
:38:35. > :38:40.in 1999 at the mum and I was commentating on that race. He has
:38:41. > :38:44.had his shunts, no doubt about it. Mark Assad 's unspectacular
:38:45. > :38:48.accidents. Steve says his favourite Webber moment had to be in Hungary
:38:49. > :38:54.in 2010 when he had older tyres and went on to win. Another one was in
:38:55. > :39:00.2007 in the wet when it was his second podium for Red Bull. Some
:39:01. > :39:06.great performances from Mark Webber over the years. Let's see what
:39:07. > :39:11.Sebastian Vettel has been doing. That is where Kimi Raikkonen went
:39:12. > :39:14.off last year. He did not take to the escape road and then have to do
:39:15. > :39:18.3-point turn at the top of the hill but he did run onto the grass which
:39:19. > :39:24.we have not seen Sebastian Vettel do too often this year. Paul Green said
:39:25. > :39:29.his best moment of 2013 was having Gary Anderson on the BBC. There we
:39:30. > :39:35.go! Thank you for your comments. We will be back later on and I hope you
:39:36. > :39:38.will be joining us again and bringing more of your favourite
:39:39. > :39:42.moments from this season and your worst moments as well. We look
:39:43. > :39:47.forward to continuing that later. Let's wrap up what has been going on
:39:48. > :39:51.here. It has been a damp first practice session here in Brazil in
:39:52. > :39:56.the Interlagos circuit for the final Grand Prix event of the year. Felipe
:39:57. > :39:59.Massa is looking to finish as Ferrari career with his special
:40:00. > :40:07.crash helmet design. His 11th fastest. The times are indicative I
:40:08. > :40:13.suppose. Rosberg and Hamilton showing great pace in the Mercedes.
:40:14. > :40:21.The chequered flag is now out so those times will stand as the
:40:22. > :40:27.fastest of this session. Vettel did not do any laps early on. He was the
:40:28. > :40:31.only one to go out on slick tyres at all in this session. A slightly odd
:40:32. > :40:35.strategy by Red Bull but they wanted to experiment with the slick tyres.
:40:36. > :40:40.He was the only one who went out on slicks. He went out on the hard tyre
:40:41. > :40:44.and he also went out on the prototype tyre. He set the third
:40:45. > :40:51.fastest time on intermediate tyres. Barton said his time was comfortable
:40:52. > :40:57.in the McLaren. Alonso will end the session with the fifth fastest time.
:40:58. > :41:03.Mark Webber sixth fastest again. Late before he decided that a lap
:41:04. > :41:08.in. Sergio Perez, seventh fastest. It is his last race for McLaren. We
:41:09. > :41:17.are still waiting to find out where he will be going. Daniil Kvyat did a
:41:18. > :41:24.good job. He was eighth fastest. Heikki Kovalainen, ninth fastest and
:41:25. > :41:30.Nico Hulkenberg ten fastest. Then Massa, Gutierrez 12. Grosjean 30th
:41:31. > :41:35.but not as often do not show their former Friday. Jean-Eric Vergne 14th
:41:36. > :41:41.and Adrian Sutil 15. Then the two Williams cars of Valterri Bottas and
:41:42. > :41:47.Pastor Maldonado. Then behind then we saw James Calado but he did not
:41:48. > :41:52.get many laps. It is the end of the season and all of the teams are on
:41:53. > :41:58.the limit of all the mileage they are allowed to do on the engines.
:41:59. > :42:03.Van der Garde was the fastest of the young teams drivers. He was a
:42:04. > :42:14.fraction faster than Charles Pic in the other Caterham. Then Jules
:42:15. > :42:23.Yankee. That was Valterri Bottas going off. It was exactly the same
:42:24. > :42:28.place as Sebastian Vettel went off. The final time today was set by
:42:29. > :42:33.Rodolfo Gonzalez, the test driver for Marussia. He stood in for Max
:42:34. > :42:38.Chilton in this session but Max Chilton will be out later on for the
:42:39. > :42:42.second free practice session. It has been entertaining. Thank you for
:42:43. > :42:50.your involvement as well. My thanks to Tony Dodgins for joining us and
:42:51. > :42:56.to Alexander Rossi for joining us. Best of luck for your plans next
:42:57. > :42:58.year. Free practice has seen a Mercedes one, , too. Let's get back
:42:59. > :43:11.to the paddock. So, Gary, what have we learned from
:43:12. > :43:14.that session? Every team tried to run on the intermediate tyre. I
:43:15. > :43:18.think at the end they will do better times. Right at the beginning, the
:43:19. > :43:21.two Mercedes cars going out there and doing the times that they did,
:43:22. > :43:27.it looks like Mercedes might have a good weekend. The weather is just
:43:28. > :43:30.starting to dry up as well. Can we expect to see the Pirelli tyres come
:43:31. > :43:36.out in the session -- second session? I think we will see dry
:43:37. > :43:40.running in the second session. Some of the teams have a lot of data
:43:41. > :43:44.analysis stuff on the car but they have taken that. They could be
:43:45. > :43:49.putting that back on. It is confusing for everybody but we will
:43:50. > :43:52.get something at the end of the day. Fingers crossed. Make sure you join
:43:53. > :43:56.us just before four o'clock on BBC Two or if you are watching the
:43:57. > :43:58.repeat it will be in a couple of moments time. From Brazil for now,
:43:59. > :44:05.goodbye.
