:00:59. > :01:07.Hello and welcome to practice 3 from Interlagos. The rain continues to
:01:08. > :01:11.fall. No change from yesterday. The weather is set to get worse over the
:01:12. > :01:15.weekend. We could see our first and final wet race of the 2013 Formula
:01:16. > :01:18.One season. As we all know, the constructors championship has been
:01:19. > :01:21.won by Red Bull an the drivers championship has been won by
:01:22. > :01:24.Sebastien Vettel for the fourth consecutive time. But there's plenty
:01:25. > :01:27.to play for away from those headlines. In the Drivers
:01:28. > :02:01.Championship, Sebastien Vettel won. Nervous times at the bottom of the
:02:02. > :02:05.table where every place and penny counts. In the pit lane today,
:02:06. > :02:09.braving the rain we have Jenny and Tom. It was a frustrating day for
:02:10. > :02:13.Pirelli yesterday. They now have to switch their attentions to
:02:14. > :02:17.qualifying. What can we expect in practice 3? It was a hugely
:02:18. > :02:24.frustrating day for them. You're right. They brought their tray
:02:25. > :02:28.weather 2014 -- their dry weather 2014 prototype to give the team some
:02:29. > :02:35.experience of that rubber. They got no data at all because it was awful
:02:36. > :02:42.weather all day. Doesn't look like we will get any dry running in this
:02:43. > :02:46.session. The rain continues to fall. It's cold, overcast. There's rain
:02:47. > :02:49.and puddles everywhere. The guys have been sweeping those away this
:02:50. > :02:55.morning to try and clear this very sodden pit lane. You guys are brave.
:02:56. > :03:00.This is where the fair weather TV presenters stand under this lovely
:03:01. > :03:05.bridge. Nico Rosberg was fastest yesterday. The last time he did that
:03:06. > :03:10.was in Monaco when he went on to win the Grand Prix. Is this wishful
:03:11. > :03:14.thinking? Surely Sebastien Vettel must be favourite and he has big
:03:15. > :03:20.favourites on his mind? Yes, he wants to win nine races in a row. He
:03:21. > :03:25.wants to win 13 races in one season and match Michael Schumacher. He
:03:26. > :03:32.might have a battle in the wet. Nico Rosberg was fast in the two
:03:33. > :03:36.settings, and look being bag -- backing back over the year, Rosberg
:03:37. > :03:43.was quick in the wet in Australia. Hamren got -- Hamilton got pole
:03:44. > :03:48.position as well. The car works well in slippery conditions. But in these
:03:49. > :03:56.conditions anybody has a chance. It's not just Mercedes and -- that
:03:57. > :04:00.Red Bull have to keep an eye on. It's not all over yet. Time for the
:04:01. > :04:05.end of season photographs, though. Plenty of those going on through the
:04:06. > :04:08.weekend. Who knows how many personnel will move around. Plenty
:04:09. > :04:11.have already, during the season. In terms of the engineers and
:04:12. > :04:16.technicians, are we going to see quite a few more transfers between
:04:17. > :04:23.teams over the coming period? Or is it a quieter period in terms of
:04:24. > :04:28.recruitment? It does become a quieter time. They'd have heard
:04:29. > :04:34.about it now if anybody was moving. These guys have got longer term
:04:35. > :04:37.contracts. At the end of the day, if anything happens now, it would be
:04:38. > :04:41.mid-season next year before it has any influence. The ones that we know
:04:42. > :04:45.about have happened. There are a couple that we know about but can't
:04:46. > :04:49.talk about yet because they've not been released. It will have an
:04:50. > :04:53.influence on the top teams losing key personnel. There's always a lot
:04:54. > :04:57.of movement and a lot of rain here this morning. It is very, very wet.
:04:58. > :05:02.There will be quite a lot of standing water. Remind us on the
:05:03. > :05:06.situation with the tyres available - how many wet or intermediate tyres
:05:07. > :05:11.do they have available? You start Friday morning with four sets of
:05:12. > :05:15.intermediates and three sets of wets. If you use one set of
:05:16. > :05:19.intermediates on Friday, you get them replaced. So this session has
:05:20. > :05:23.four sets of intermediates, three sets of wets, one of which will have
:05:24. > :05:28.done some laps yesterday. This weather is wet weather tyres. I
:05:29. > :05:32.think, I doubt if you'll get to intermediate before the end of it or
:05:33. > :05:35.it will be just for a couple of laps because you want to save them for
:05:36. > :05:38.qualifying. Yes it's important to have fresh sets not only at
:05:39. > :05:42.beginning, but quite often at the end of a session. I was looking back
:05:43. > :05:46.at the wet sessions we've had this year, one of the ones that struck me
:05:47. > :05:53.was Malaysia where they were on slicks in Q1 and Q2, but on
:05:54. > :05:59.intermediates on Q3. This is Gutierrez doing a practice lap. At
:06:00. > :06:03.the final part of qualifying Sebastien Vettel took pole in the
:06:04. > :06:08.wet. McLaren and Mercedes stayed on one set of intermediates during the
:06:09. > :06:14.session. But they lost out because the intermediates had lost their
:06:15. > :06:18.hard edge. That edge makes all the difference. If you stay out there,
:06:19. > :06:22.you have temperature in the tyre but not the sharp corners that cut
:06:23. > :06:27.through the water. It's a decision to make and make it early. The end
:06:28. > :06:34.of the session comes at you quickly. This is nice seeing Felipe Massa
:06:35. > :06:39.autographing the guy's arm. He won't wash that ever, presumably. Some
:06:40. > :06:42.Ferrari fans would probably chop his arm off for that photograph. That's
:06:43. > :06:46.lovely to see and a great relationship that Felipe Massa has
:06:47. > :06:51.with that team. Tom, you're in the pit lane at the moment, but you were
:06:52. > :06:57.telling us yesterday that he really has been incredibly popular member
:06:58. > :07:01.of the team in that stint since 2006. You're absolutely right. In
:07:02. > :07:10.2003, when he started there as a test driver, he was very much under
:07:11. > :07:15.Barichello's wing. He was very open and honest with the team. That is
:07:16. > :07:20.the quality about Felipe Massa that the team admires so much. If he has
:07:21. > :07:24.a be legal with the car, he -- if he has a problem with the car, he says
:07:25. > :07:29.what he thinks. If he has a member of the team that is annoying him, he
:07:30. > :07:34.says that too. They love that honesty. It has been a fruitful
:07:35. > :07:40.relationship. He's been a team player, Gary. Sometimes to his
:07:41. > :07:44.disappointment, as he's mentioned, having to move out of the way of
:07:45. > :07:50.Fernando Alonso in 2010 was a key point. Massa has been a great team
:07:51. > :07:54.player. He has. Honesty is always the best virtue, as long as you're
:07:55. > :08:00.consistent, the team will respect you. I believe it's time for Ferrari
:08:01. > :08:05.to put in someone new. It's time for Massa to move on and get a new lease
:08:06. > :08:11.of life. He's going to Williams, bringing a mute -- multitude of
:08:12. > :08:18.experience. They have Bottas there. That combination could being very --
:08:19. > :08:29.could be very powerful. We're watching Esteban Gutierrez.
:08:30. > :08:41.He heads down out of that, it's a little downhill. It's steeper than
:08:42. > :08:45.it looks. It flattens out a touch on the next straight, then the last
:08:46. > :08:50.corner which leads to the fast, sweeping, well straight, but it
:08:51. > :08:54.keeps on curving through corners 13, 14, and 15. They're all given corner
:08:55. > :08:58.numbers on the official FIA map. Eventually it brings him past the
:08:59. > :09:02.pit lane exit there and across the line to complete a lap. Tom, I think
:09:03. > :09:07.you're at Lotus now? I am. I'm looking at Heikki
:09:08. > :09:13.Kovalainen who is sat on a toolbox at the back of the garage behind his
:09:14. > :09:18.car. His car is still on its jacks. As they started the car this morning
:09:19. > :09:21.some irregularities with the engine showed up. They've stripped the
:09:22. > :09:24.thing down in the last hour. They say they've found the problem.
:09:25. > :09:28.They're not having to replace the engine. But it will take them a
:09:29. > :09:34.while to get the floor back on and get the bits and pieces together. So
:09:35. > :09:38.a slow start to FP 3. He was fourth fastest in the second fastest
:09:39. > :09:41.section. Pictures of Gutierrez slipping and sliding. He's been
:09:42. > :09:45.pretty impressive in the wet conditions this year, even from his
:09:46. > :09:49.very first Grand Prix in Australia. Even though he lost control in
:09:50. > :09:54.qualifying. But he was fast up to that point. He's been a match for
:09:55. > :09:58.Hulkenberg in the wet conditions. Hulkenberg, his team-mate yesterday
:09:59. > :10:02.was eighth fastest. Gutierrez was 12th. Talking about the second
:10:03. > :10:05.practice session, the wetter of the two sessions. The first session in
:10:06. > :10:13.the morning had been that little bit drir and we saw a one, two on that
:10:14. > :10:24.occasion for Rosberg and Hamilton. Hamilton seemed less happy. Hamilton
:10:25. > :10:28.did 128. 1. We saw him yesterday making some mistakes. Lewis is one
:10:29. > :10:31.of those guys in the wet who loves those conditions. What he needs to
:10:32. > :10:35.do is get back to basics and make the car do one thing. The engineers
:10:36. > :10:39.will have tried to give him one thing rather than the car doing
:10:40. > :10:43.everything. I am sure this morning he will be up to speed. He's always
:10:44. > :10:46.going to be happy and there will be plenty of work done. He was saying
:10:47. > :10:50.that the throttle mapping didn't suit his driving style. That's
:10:51. > :10:54.something they can change. A lot of data will be absorbed. They'll look
:10:55. > :10:58.at the way he drives the car and presumably change the mapping. What
:10:59. > :11:03.does that mean, though? These engines produce a certain amount of
:11:04. > :11:09.torque at different throttle levels. You try to create a throttle map
:11:10. > :11:15.that's a smooth delivery. In a Formula One car the throttle peddle
:11:16. > :11:20.is called a torque pedal. 10% of throttle doesn't have to give you o
:11:21. > :11:25.10% of torque. It might give 5%. You can shape that. If you have a too
:11:26. > :11:28.flat a shape when the driver is trying to control through a corner,
:11:29. > :11:32.he gets to the top end of that and it has to rise. It must start at
:11:33. > :11:35.zero and end at 100%. If it does that, you have to play around with
:11:36. > :11:40.it to suit the driver. He didn't like it yesterday. He's driven in
:11:41. > :11:43.the wet before this car, so I'm surprised they don't have a good
:11:44. > :11:46.throttle map available. He said he struggled in the wet in Australia at
:11:47. > :11:50.the beginning of the year. Still seems to be a slight problem. Of
:11:51. > :11:54.course, that is another issue when you move from one team to another,
:11:55. > :11:58.someone like Rosberg has been in that team since 2010. He's helped
:11:59. > :12:02.develop that car. He's worked with Michael Schumacher, no doubt
:12:03. > :12:05.learning tips from him. Whereas Lewis is fresh this year. A few
:12:06. > :12:08.things like that. We heard he struggled with the braking on the
:12:09. > :12:11.car. It hasn't given him the confidence he's wanted. We heard in
:12:12. > :12:16.the wet that the car doesn't respond the way he wants. At McLaren he knew
:12:17. > :12:24.and understand the McLaren inside out. He came into Formula One with
:12:25. > :12:30.McLaren. He derived McLaren's ways. They were a family together. Then
:12:31. > :12:34.the divorce hand and he came to Mercedes. Sometimes your new wife
:12:35. > :12:39.doesn't do what you want. It takes time, but she will know what to cook
:12:40. > :12:42.for you for dinner when you get home. The relationship is still
:12:43. > :12:51.developing. Rosberg has been looking very impressive. Gutierrez, the only
:12:52. > :12:59.one to sett a lap time so far 1. 34. 6. Yesterday was in the 1. 27, 1.
:13:00. > :13:03.28. That shows how much wetter the circuit is. The forecast today is
:13:04. > :13:09.rain throughout. Showers on Sunday. We could end up with a wet race. Who
:13:10. > :13:12.knows what's going to happen. It's gone very quiet. There's not much
:13:13. > :13:16.happening on track at the moment. Most cars are in the pits, even if
:13:17. > :13:19.they have been on the circuit. Mark Webber is on the track at the
:13:20. > :13:24.moment. Esteban Gutierrez is still out there. We will keep an eye on
:13:25. > :13:29.him. Christian Horner joins us from the pit wall. Good morning. What is
:13:30. > :13:34.the programme for you guys this morning, going through what is the
:13:35. > :13:37.very wet free practice, how does this affect the normal programme
:13:38. > :13:42.into qualifying? Good morning, it's a wet one out here. Basically, the
:13:43. > :13:46.plan is for the drivers to get a feel for the car in these
:13:47. > :13:50.conditions. Obviously, it's extremely wet. Therefore, having to
:13:51. > :13:55.run on extremes. We have to be a bit careful that we don't burn too many
:13:56. > :13:59.tyres prior to qualifying. We will need them for qualifying and the
:14:00. > :14:03.race. We saw and we were discussing a moment ago, Gary Anderson is with
:14:04. > :14:08.me, you planned it well in Malaysia, that wags a wet qualifying -- that
:14:09. > :14:17.was a wet qualifying. You used two sets of tes in the final part of P
:14:18. > :14:22.3, effectively importantlying teams were wear -- effect other teams were
:14:23. > :14:26.wearing them too much. Will the intermediate lose its edge quickly?
:14:27. > :14:31.It's a pretty good tyre and has a reasonable range. Where it gets into
:14:32. > :14:35.trouble is as on as you -- as soon as you get dry patches around then
:14:36. > :14:39.it eats up the tyre quickly. If you have a car out of balance as well,
:14:40. > :14:43.that tends to do a lot of damage to the tyre. The intermediate you can
:14:44. > :14:48.run in pretty wet conditions. It will go a reasonable distance. The
:14:49. > :14:52.wet tyre, presumably once you've run the full wet, like this morning, it
:14:53. > :14:57.is so wet, you're not seeing much wear on the tyre itself, unless it
:14:58. > :15:01.starts to dry off? That's right. In conditions like this, the tyre, you
:15:02. > :15:06.can see Gutierrez at the moment, those tyres will come in and not
:15:07. > :15:10.look too bad. The water protects the tread block reasonably well. It's
:15:11. > :15:16.when you start to lose that water and put load and heat into the tyre,
:15:17. > :15:18.particularly through the faster corners, that's what does the
:15:19. > :15:23.damage. You have two drivers who have always performed well in wet
:15:24. > :15:29.conditions. I remember watching Mark come up through the ranks, very
:15:30. > :15:35.quick in the wet. Vettel took that amazing wet win with Toro Rosso in
:15:36. > :15:40.appalling conditions. Daniel Ricciardo, Jean-Eric Vergne, two
:15:41. > :15:43.younger guys, it looks as though Jean-Eric Vergne has had the edge in
:15:44. > :15:48.the wet so far this year have you seen that yourself? Yeah we've seen
:15:49. > :15:54.in through his career. In the wet he has hay tremendous feel. That was
:15:55. > :16:01.the thing which was so impressive about Daniel's performance
:16:02. > :16:07.yesterday. He was quicker than Jean-Eric Vergne. So coming back to
:16:08. > :16:11.that the Russian driver who is going to join Toro Rosso, you were
:16:12. > :16:16.suitably impressed? Massively impressed. He's done limited mileage
:16:17. > :16:22.in a Formula One car. He's jumped out of a GP3 car. The power is three
:16:23. > :16:26.times the power. To turn up at a circuit he's never seen before, in
:16:27. > :16:29.the wet, jump in and do the job he did was very impressive. Eighth
:16:30. > :16:33.fastest in the first practice session, very impressive indeed.
:16:34. > :16:36.Tell us what the team is forecasting, what your team
:16:37. > :16:41.forecasters are saying we are going to have for both qualifying and the
:16:42. > :16:45.race? Unfortunately, it looks fairly set, in the weather at the moment.
:16:46. > :16:50.It looks like this is here for a while. Then hopefully, if you
:16:51. > :16:56.believe the forecast, it looks grar tomorrow but a -- greyer tomorrow,
:16:57. > :16:59.but less rain. But the horrible drizzly showers which are a
:17:00. > :17:02.nightmare on the pit wall. Great for us watching. Thanks Christian.
:17:03. > :17:07.Thanks for joining us. We could be in for a changeable race like last
:17:08. > :17:15.year, a race won by Jenson Button, on ape clever strategy. -- on a
:17:16. > :17:18.clever strategy. He stayed out on slicks. It's that kind of call that
:17:19. > :17:22.Jenson Button is renowned for. He might have to use some of those
:17:23. > :17:26.talents again this weekend. Yes, it's very ease why toy make those
:17:27. > :17:30.decisions -- easy to make those decisions. You always want to get
:17:31. > :17:35.onto the quicker tyre. It's easy to get onto it too early. You lose
:17:36. > :17:39.those few seconds that are vitally important. Though your tyres are up
:17:40. > :17:42.and working to temperature at the time on the track, those come good
:17:43. > :17:52.enough. The seconds you lose are difficult to pull back. Watching ham
:17:53. > :17:58.-- Lewis Hamilton here. He was in a good position last time to win the
:17:59. > :18:00.race. But he tangled with Nico Hulkenberg. He has certainly shown
:18:01. > :18:05.his pace in the changeable conditions. I wonder if he will feel
:18:06. > :18:11.a bit happier with the car. He had a couple of spins yesterday, one long
:18:12. > :18:15.broadside and one complete 360 we saw. He comes straight back into the
:18:16. > :18:19.pits and it's only Esteban Gutierrez, so far, who has
:18:20. > :18:25.established a lap time. Let's look at the replace. A bit a lock up?
:18:26. > :18:30.Beautiful shots of the water coming off the tyres. Giving you an idea of
:18:31. > :18:35.airflow over the car as well? Yes, it does. The amount of water at the
:18:36. > :18:38.moment is heavy. It is changing the airflow dramatically. That's the big
:18:39. > :18:43.difference from the car in the dry to in the wet, the airflow is
:18:44. > :18:48.affected by the water. Whenever you see some of the ones with the
:18:49. > :18:51.vortexes coming off because of the moisture in the air, in the morning,
:18:52. > :18:55.that's more representative of the airflow. The water is a bit too
:18:56. > :18:59.heavy, so it changes the direction of the airflow quite dramatically.
:19:00. > :19:08.Now, you've been getting in touch all weekend using the #BBC F1. Great
:19:09. > :19:12.to have your involvement. Your highs and lows of the season. Let's go
:19:13. > :19:18.through those. Andrew priestly saying, "2013 F1 season will be
:19:19. > :19:24.remembered for Sebastien Vettel's consistent winning. Love him or hate
:19:25. > :19:28.him, you can't fault it." I think you're right. Another one says, "Red
:19:29. > :19:34.Bull winning the championship for the fourth year is her high. The low
:19:35. > :19:39.is Mark Webber leaving." He's going into his final event this weekend. I
:19:40. > :19:47.know many of you Mark Webber fans are sad to leave him go. Another one
:19:48. > :19:53.says the best moment is Bottas in the Williams scoring points. The
:19:54. > :20:02.worst moment and this is a good point, cameraman getting hit by a
:20:03. > :20:06.wheel at the Nurburgring. It's difficult rules have come about
:20:07. > :20:12.because of that. Yes, the wheel locking system, basically when these
:20:13. > :20:18.wheels go on, there's a central wheel nut. There's always been a
:20:19. > :20:25.locking mechanism. But now the rules have got changed. If the wheel nut
:20:26. > :20:29.doesn't come onto the thread, the toggles come out then. The teams
:20:30. > :20:34.have had to adapt to the systems they've got. Because not everybody
:20:35. > :20:38.wanted to make new axels, it's a hugely expensive component. It is an
:20:39. > :20:43.adaptation this year. We will see better solutions next year. You're
:20:44. > :20:47.in the pit lane, you're often in the pit lane, how has it been in terms
:20:48. > :20:50.of reducing the numbers of journalists in there? I think right
:20:51. > :20:57.now we've got it right. Whenever the rule was put in initially, there was
:20:58. > :21:00.probably too few. Then the second time there were too many. The
:21:01. > :21:05.numbers now, the pit lane is not as congested. You can see cars coming
:21:06. > :21:08.in, find places to get out of the way easier. Motor racing is
:21:09. > :21:13.dangerous. You have to be alert. You have to watch the way the cars are
:21:14. > :21:16.coming at you. So many inexperienced journalists and photographers down
:21:17. > :21:19.there are always looking in the wrong direction. Sometimes you have
:21:20. > :21:24.to either have somebody with you or make sure you're look being where
:21:25. > :21:27.the cars would come and hit you. Watching Heikki Kovalainen. Jenny,
:21:28. > :21:34.you have an update from Williams? Yes, they went out yesterday on of a
:21:35. > :21:37.dry mechanical set up. They weren't expecting the weather to be as bad
:21:38. > :21:41.as it is. Overnight they've reverted back to a wet set up and put on a
:21:42. > :21:46.few more bits to try and deal with that. They're expecting the weather
:21:47. > :21:50.to continue throughout today. We saw Valtteri Bottas have his best ever
:21:51. > :21:53.qualifying in Montreal in similar conditions to these, the spray was
:21:54. > :21:59.everywhere. It was very hard to see on track. Bottas really thrived in
:22:00. > :22:05.that situation. He's looking forward to those. They're going to try to
:22:06. > :22:09.get long runs in in this session to understand what the car can do in
:22:10. > :22:18.these conditions. They expect tomorrow's race to start in wet
:22:19. > :22:22.conditions. This -- that will have a huge beari because of the
:22:23. > :22:25.limitations in what you can change on the car into qualifying, not very
:22:26. > :22:29.much at all. Do the teams look at the weather and say right, we're
:22:30. > :22:33.going for a full wet set up? I think you'd have to. The weather forecasts
:22:34. > :22:37.that we've seen look like it is going to be partially wet tomorrow,
:22:38. > :22:41.maybe not as wet as today. You've got to bend towards that. You have
:22:42. > :22:44.to make sure you have the car covered in the wet. The other you
:22:45. > :22:50.can change tomorrow if it pops up and be dry, is the front wing angle
:22:51. > :22:55.and if the climatic conditions are different, if it is dry, they will
:22:56. > :23:00.allow you to change the engine cooling and brake ducting. Those are
:23:01. > :23:03.the only things. But you have to get that climatic condition change from
:23:04. > :23:10.the FIA before you can alter the cooling. Let's get back down to the
:23:11. > :23:13.pits now. Tom Clarkson is with Martin Whitmarsh.
:23:14. > :23:17.Good morning Martin, that rain dance you've been doing, seems to have
:23:18. > :23:28.paid off. It's pretty miserable out there. I think on balance, I'd
:23:29. > :23:34.rather it was raining tomorrow than today. Anything can happen in
:23:35. > :23:37.qualifying in these conditions. I want a wet Sunday afternoon, not
:23:38. > :23:41.necessarily Saturday. You don't always get what you want in this
:23:42. > :23:46.world. At the moment, as you can see, everyone is holding onto their
:23:47. > :23:51.tyres. Quite an abrasive surface, it's ease why I to take the edge off
:23:52. > :23:57.the tyres here. Everyone is doing an install. Gutierrez did timed laps. I
:23:58. > :24:05.don't think there'll be too much running because people just realise
:24:06. > :24:09.that you'll need fresh hopefully inters this afternoon. What sort of
:24:10. > :24:13.life were we seeing from the inters yesterday? I think the problem with
:24:14. > :24:19.the inters is that you take the edge off them quickly. You probably want
:24:20. > :24:26.to do your quick lap in the first one or two laps. Thereafter you
:24:27. > :24:29.progressively degrade. It people only use the one we have to give
:24:30. > :24:34.back yesterday. They were keeping their fresh sets for this afternoon.
:24:35. > :24:39.I think it was one of those things, if the track dries at all, the
:24:40. > :24:43.inters overheat so quickly on this circuit, they would be destroyed in
:24:44. > :24:49.a lap. I think at the moment, actually, this is full wet
:24:50. > :24:54.conditions. In qualifying, you want to go out on inters. The problem
:24:55. > :24:58.will be trying to stand on the pit wall or stand in the garage here and
:24:59. > :25:03.making a decision -- make a decision. Is it inter or full wet?
:25:04. > :25:06.Getting that right, avoiding the of traffic, getting the tyres
:25:07. > :25:12.temperature, all sorts of things. Having said that, it will probably
:25:13. > :25:17.throw up unexpected results for the grid, that will be interesting in
:25:18. > :25:22.the race. I quite like it to be wet in the race as well. Jenson said to
:25:23. > :25:25.us yesterday he's hopeful of a podium this weekend. What sort of
:25:26. > :25:32.shape are you in, do you think? Well, I think the last few races,
:25:33. > :25:37.we're not in the same race as Red Bull clearly. But we've been racing
:25:38. > :25:43.with fraries and -- Ferraris and Mercedes and Lotus, so we're a
:25:44. > :25:47.little bit closer. We need good fortunes, great driving to get on
:25:48. > :25:52.the podium. You don't give up. It would be nice to go for that. I
:25:53. > :25:57.think we need something unexpected to happen to really be in
:25:58. > :26:00.contention. Who knows. That's what ens. Normally, we're here with a
:26:01. > :26:07.competitive car and the last thing you want is rain. We've seen that so
:26:08. > :26:10.many times, but at championship critical points, where you think I
:26:11. > :26:13.don't want the uncertainty of a wet race and you get it. Tomorrow,
:26:14. > :26:19.knowing our luck, it will be dry. We'll' see. How much would a podium
:26:20. > :26:23.mean to you tomorrow or even a fourth place? This team has never
:26:24. > :26:29.not scored a fourth place since 1966, and your best result this year
:26:30. > :26:36.is fifth. I'm not an hiss torning. Getting up there -- historian.
:26:37. > :26:40.Getting up there means everything to this team. It's been a tough and
:26:41. > :26:43.long year. If we can get some reward, it hasn't quite come
:26:44. > :26:47.together in the last few races. I think we flattered in a few of the
:26:48. > :26:52.practice sessions but we didn't quite deliver. Who knows. Maybe
:26:53. > :26:56.something will go right this year. There's one race to go, but we keep
:26:57. > :27:01.fighting. Say it's during the hard times that you learn the most. What
:27:02. > :27:06.have you learned the most as a team this year? I'm immenly proud of the
:27:07. > :27:09.team. The drivers and the team here, we've been racing with a lot of
:27:10. > :27:17.pressure, a difficult, frustrating circumstance. The teams pulled --
:27:18. > :27:21.team's pulled together. You can sense tha Anyone around the team,
:27:22. > :27:24.you can sense the that the team is working well here. Our car isn't
:27:25. > :27:33.quick enough, we know that. There's a determination. I think back in
:27:34. > :27:37.Woking, I'm an optimist, so a quick up the backside is what you need. We
:27:38. > :27:42.have had that this year. In that environment you rethink how you make
:27:43. > :27:45.decisions, what things you're doing. We've been able to do that.
:27:46. > :27:49.Hopefully we're going to come out of this year stronger. I think we can.
:27:50. > :27:55.But, having said that, it's been a long one. I really look forward to
:27:56. > :28:00.next now. What percentage of the MTC is focussed onned 2014 or is there a
:28:01. > :28:04.little bit of you thinking Honda, 2015? Next year is an important
:28:05. > :28:10.year. Most of the focus is on 14, but we have a new partnership in 15.
:28:11. > :28:16.I think Mercedes will do a very good job next year. There's no excuses.
:28:17. > :28:21.There's no reason we can't go out there win and win a championship
:28:22. > :28:26.next year. We'd like to do that. Inevitably, there's an excitement
:28:27. > :28:30.about the longer term future. We'll try to focus on winning with
:28:31. > :28:34.Mercedes again. That would be the right thing to do. Thanks for your
:28:35. > :28:38.time. Good luck the rest of the weekend.
:28:39. > :28:44.We're on board with Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes. He's going into the
:28:45. > :28:48.pits. He did a practice start. I've been looking back at the poor years
:28:49. > :28:57.for McLaren. 2004 they were only fifth in the championship as well. I
:28:58. > :29:02.was talking to David Coulthard about it. It was a tough season for them.
:29:03. > :29:07.Kimi Raikkonen, his team-mate that year, had hay second place finish in
:29:08. > :29:11.Brazil in a rain-affected race. Maybe thicks will -- things will
:29:12. > :29:16.come good for McLaren. 1983, they were fifth in the World
:29:17. > :29:24.Championship, the pre-Ron Dennis era. They were sixth in '81. John
:29:25. > :29:29.Watson was fourth in Long Beach and Canada. That was the year that Prost
:29:30. > :29:33.was with John Watson at McLaren in 1980. He was snatched by Renault at
:29:34. > :29:41.the end of the year. It was a year you just left McLaren, Gary? Yes, I
:29:42. > :29:47.did the first Test. I left just after it. It was one of those
:29:48. > :29:53.things, I wanted to work with Morris Dunn. Yeah, it was a difficult time
:29:54. > :29:58.for McLaren. The years before that really they never caught onto the
:29:59. > :30:01.ground effect cars. The car for 1980 was quite a good package, but it was
:30:02. > :30:05.a year too late because it didn't have the information. They were a
:30:06. > :30:09.year behind where they should be. You can see everybody trying to keep
:30:10. > :30:20.themselves dry. But there's always passion for Formula One in Brazil.
:30:21. > :30:25.We're at the Autodromo Carlos Pace stadium. You worked with Pace didn't
:30:26. > :30:29.you? Yes, it's quite nice. It's a long time ago now. It was one of the
:30:30. > :30:41.very good drivers. Unfortunately lost his life in an accident. One of
:30:42. > :30:47.those guys who drove cars quickly. They were similar people, dedicated
:30:48. > :30:53.to what they did but nice guys as well. 1975 he took the victory. The
:30:54. > :30:59.first ever winner here was a Brazilian as well Fitipaldi. He's
:31:00. > :31:04.written a beautiful piece on the McLaren website about his memories
:31:05. > :31:08.of Cena. Very well worth a look. Looking at it this morning, looking
:31:09. > :31:13.back at Cena. He knew him well and talks about how he knew him as a
:31:14. > :31:16.lad, met him here, when Cena was winning everything in carting. The
:31:17. > :31:22.cart track is right beside the main circuit here. He met him then and he
:31:23. > :31:30.introduced him to quite a lot of the Formula One teams. He introduced him
:31:31. > :31:34.to many team managers telling them all he was a future world champion.
:31:35. > :31:37.Maybe they didn't believe him at the time, but they learned he was right.
:31:38. > :31:45.It's interesting how the Brazilians stick together and help each other.
:31:46. > :31:53.I've known quite a few. I've known Emmerson, Massa, Berti, to be
:31:54. > :31:56.honest, Moreno, they all help each other at some point in time. They
:31:57. > :32:00.have enough experience to know how hard it is. They stick together as a
:32:01. > :32:05.nice club. Some other places we go to seem to try to make sure that the
:32:06. > :32:08.other guy doesn't get a chance. But the Brazilians Join Together and
:32:09. > :32:11.make it all happen. We have you in the car because the weather is
:32:12. > :32:15.changing. There could be a break any moment. We don't want to miss the
:32:16. > :32:19.chance to do any running. Just over half an hour to go in the final
:32:20. > :32:22.practice session. One of the stories this weekend is which team will
:32:23. > :32:31.finish 10th in the constructors battle? At the moment Marussia have
:32:32. > :32:36.the 10th place. Their race in Malaysia was affected by rain. Jules
:32:37. > :32:39.Bianchi got that place. That means they have 10th in the championship.
:32:40. > :32:44.Caterham are trying to beat them. It changed in the final race last year.
:32:45. > :32:50.Lets' see how they're feeling. Jenny is with Graham Lauden. Tense times
:32:51. > :32:55.this weekend and there's a lot riding on the result here. Well,
:32:56. > :33:00.there is, but it's another race. From the team's point of view that's
:33:01. > :33:06.how we have to treat it. We are always trying to beat the team next
:33:07. > :33:11.to us. We want to stay ahead of them now. Things can change, even with a
:33:12. > :33:16.few laps to go. We will race as hard as we can and see if we can stay
:33:17. > :33:20.ahead. Max Chilton in his car being fired up. That's the racket behind
:33:21. > :33:27.us. What have you said to Chilton and Bianchi about how to handle the
:33:28. > :33:31.pressure? They're professional drivers and they know exactly what
:33:32. > :33:35.they're doing. They don't need us to add anything. They want to did a
:33:36. > :33:40.really good performance every time they get in the car. I don't think
:33:41. > :33:44.there's anything we could say to change their approach. We wouldn't
:33:45. > :33:49.want to. We don't want them to feel any extra pressure at all. Was
:33:50. > :33:54.announced earlier on this season, the second place in the team stim a
:33:55. > :33:57.question mark over. Are things getting -- still a question mark
:33:58. > :34:02.over. Are things getting closer to Max? It's highly unlikely we will
:34:03. > :34:05.announce anything during FP3 session or qualifying or the race.
:34:06. > :34:09.Traditionally we have waited until the season is over. I think that's
:34:10. > :34:13.exactly how we're going to treat this season as well. I have to say I
:34:14. > :34:17.think both drivers have done an extremely good job. They're both in
:34:18. > :34:22.their rookie years. They've worked really well together. The whole team
:34:23. > :34:30.has had a great atmosphere, very competitive spirit in the team.
:34:31. > :34:35.That's what we will harness. We're standing in the noisiest place. Max
:34:36. > :34:41.Chilton is about to go on track. I wonder, this is the end of the
:34:42. > :34:45.Cosworth era, so say goodbye to a good partnership. Yes, a fantastic
:34:46. > :34:53.brand in Formula One. They've been around for a very long time. It's
:34:54. > :34:57.sad that there'll be a season without Cosworth. But they will be
:34:58. > :35:02.in Formula One. They provide more than just engines. But I'm sure we
:35:03. > :35:08.will see Cosworth engines again. Going forward, how hopeful are you,
:35:09. > :35:12.we approach 2014, we will move back wards actually, how hopeful are you
:35:13. > :35:16.that 2014, with the new regulations coming, can open a doorway to the
:35:17. > :35:23.younger, newer teams to try and beat some of the more established guys?
:35:24. > :35:27.For a team like us, we want to have regulation that's stay exactly the
:35:28. > :35:32.same to allow us to catch up the lost time because we're a newer
:35:33. > :35:37.team. Or some kind of radical change and one thing is for sure, the new
:35:38. > :35:41.power units offer a completely radical change. We see it as an
:35:42. > :35:48.opportunity. It's a huge technical challenge but one that we're up for.
:35:49. > :35:52.It's too noisy. Graham, thank you. You're welcome.
:35:53. > :36:01.Jules Bianchi is about to go out onto the circuit. Let's just watch
:36:02. > :36:04.him out. Yes, there he is on his way out. Christian Horner joins us again
:36:05. > :36:08.from the pit wall. It's a bit of a quiet day for you. Not much going on
:36:09. > :36:15.from a team point of view, I suppose. It's a bit quiet. There's
:36:16. > :36:19.supposed to be a hole in the rain at the moment. So I guess everybody is
:36:20. > :36:23.in the garage trying to save their extreme tyres because we don't have
:36:24. > :36:29.that many of them. Asking BBC viewers for their highs and lows of
:36:30. > :36:33.the 2013 season. Many of people are connected with your drivers, of
:36:34. > :36:36.course, Andrew says, "The best moment was Vettel's epic
:36:37. > :36:41.celebrations after winning the title in India." Tom saying, "The worst
:36:42. > :36:47.moment for him was Mark's too slow get him out of the way, the message
:36:48. > :36:54.on the Vettel radio." What are your highs and lows? Certainly the high
:36:55. > :37:00.of winning the championship in India was incredible. I think winning in
:37:01. > :37:05.Montreal this year, a track we've never won at. To be totally dominant
:37:06. > :37:14.through the weekend was really satisfying. The worst bit?
:37:15. > :37:18.Obviously, there was a highlight in terms of performance, but a low
:37:19. > :37:23.light in the way it panned out and the attention it attracted. That was
:37:24. > :37:28.probably my low light of the year. Tell me how the relationship is now.
:37:29. > :37:33.It's always been professional, I know, between Mark and Seb, but have
:37:34. > :37:39.you seen any relaxing of it in the last few races with Mark heading out
:37:40. > :37:42.of Formula One? Has that changed their relationship at all? It's
:37:43. > :37:47.changed a little bit. They've always been a -- there has always been a
:37:48. > :37:51.respect between them. The problem is they're different generations.
:37:52. > :37:55.There's more than a ten-year age gap between the two of them and they're
:37:56. > :37:59.different characters, different personalities. Therefore, there has
:38:00. > :38:04.been, on occasion, differences of opinion over certain issues. There's
:38:05. > :38:09.been a respect. Certainly, seeing that, as Mark is getting to the end
:38:10. > :38:17.of his career now, I think it has thawed between the two of them. In
:38:18. > :38:21.future years, with a bit of time for reflection, the relationship with
:38:22. > :38:24.them will only grow. Looking down through the grid this year,
:38:25. > :38:28.obviously you keep a very close eye on young drivers, particularly
:38:29. > :38:33.through the Toro Rosso programme. You've taken Ricciardo to join your
:38:34. > :38:42.top team for next year. Any other drivers that have impressed you this
:38:43. > :38:47.year amongst some of the xetive teams? -- competitive teams?
:38:48. > :38:51.Grosjean has stepped it up a gear, particularly in the last few months.
:38:52. > :38:57.He's looked very impressive. I think Hulkenberg has done an excellent job
:38:58. > :39:01.in the Sauber. They're two guys who have really stood out. Certainly I
:39:02. > :39:04.think most people would agree with you. Thank you very much for joining
:39:05. > :39:07.us again. Let's hope we get some running in before the end of the
:39:08. > :39:11.session. Thank you. Jules Bianchi on track at the
:39:12. > :39:15.moment. Who else? Not very many. Three cars out there. Jules Bianchi,
:39:16. > :39:20.Max Chilton and Valtteri Bottas, the only cars out there at the moment.
:39:21. > :39:24.It is probably one of the quietest. We are going shortly on the full
:39:25. > :39:30.wets again. We don't want to damage these tyres. This is probably the
:39:31. > :39:45.best chance before the track gets worse again. ( At the end of the
:39:46. > :39:49.day, that's what happens when the track gets slippery. You can't do
:39:50. > :39:56.anything about it. That's right. The only time we have sets is Bianchi,
:39:57. > :40:06.Chilton. Barning bank has done 1. 33. 4. -- Bianchi has done 1. 33. 4.
:40:07. > :40:10.No-one else has set a lap time. So the normal front runners haven't
:40:11. > :40:16.completed a lap. Bottas hasn't completed a lap. The fin is out of
:40:17. > :40:21.shape there. He has no fear of these conditions. You can see he seems to
:40:22. > :40:24.thrive on the car moving around beneath him. He doesn't seem to
:40:25. > :40:27.worry about the car moving around. That's a good thing to be.
:40:28. > :40:32.Obviously, when the car is moving, you know where it is as well. If you
:40:33. > :40:36.drive fast enough, then it just snaps away, you have a problem. If
:40:37. > :40:43.My Friends Could See Me Now the car is moving -- if you keep the car
:40:44. > :40:48.moving, then you don't have that problem.
:40:49. > :40:52.# Valtteri Bottas is exceptional in these conditions. Let's think back
:40:53. > :40:57.to Canada this year when we had changeable conditions in qualifying.
:40:58. > :41:01.He put it third on the grid. He's a solid guy. Look what he did last
:41:02. > :41:05.weekend - exceptional. Whenever he has had a chance to perform this
:41:06. > :41:08.year, he has nailed it. He's been rewarded with another contract by
:41:09. > :41:13.Williams. Another contract and a new team-mate in the shape of Felipe
:41:14. > :41:17.Massa. He's going to be measured against a known target now. For all
:41:18. > :41:22.the teams, who'll watch to see how he gets on, it gives a clearer
:41:23. > :41:27.gradient. Against Maldonado, we know he can be quick, but we know he's
:41:28. > :41:31.inconsistent. Bottas has done well to out qualify Maldonado on more
:41:32. > :41:35.occasions than not this year, but it's hard to judge him. Yeah, Massa
:41:36. > :41:40.coming into the team will be a huge asset for Williams at the moment.
:41:41. > :41:44.They need to build. Pat is a great guy, running the engineering side of
:41:45. > :41:51.the company now. He listens to people. He understands people. Hose
:41:52. > :41:56.a racer at heart. -- he's a racer at heart. We will like Massa coming
:41:57. > :42:00.there. This was the lap we were watching
:42:01. > :42:04.now, when he got quite out of shape. Look how much work on the steering
:42:05. > :42:07.wheel. You don't often see that on a Formula One car. But these
:42:08. > :42:12.conditions are a different story. A question has come in - thank you for
:42:13. > :42:16.your questions. What happens to the individual race engineers when
:42:17. > :42:19.drivers change teams? Do they then work with the new driver that's
:42:20. > :42:27.coming in? The question particularly is about Rob Smedley, will he work
:42:28. > :42:32.with Kimi Raikkonen and will he be at Ferrari? There are driver
:42:33. > :42:37.relationships. If you take Kimi Raikkonen's engineer Mark Slayed. He
:42:38. > :42:40.was with Kimi at McLaren. You gept a relationship -- you get a
:42:41. > :42:43.relationship built up. But the team employs the engineers. It's up to
:42:44. > :42:52.the engineer whether he wants to take on a new job or move away. We
:42:53. > :42:58.will see Smedley making a move. Everything sways that little bit. We
:42:59. > :43:02.see changes even higher up in the engineering front. People from
:43:03. > :43:04.higher levels move because of a driver movement. Just because they
:43:05. > :43:08.have a relationship with that driver. It's quite important. Let's
:43:09. > :43:15.see what this lap time is for Sebastien Vettel. He's been pushing
:43:16. > :43:21.hard on this lap. Reasonable middle seconder. -- sector. He could go
:43:22. > :43:26.quickest here. He's five tenths faster than anybody else. Bottas is
:43:27. > :43:29.pretty good in these conditions. That's a good lap by Sebastien
:43:30. > :43:36.Vettel, the first of the front runners to show us what he can do.
:43:37. > :43:40.Jonathan Wheatly looking at the monitors. He looks like a Bond
:43:41. > :43:47.villain as he assesses that lap. Weber is still in the -- Mark Webber
:43:48. > :43:51.is still in the pits. You have to keep pushing, but one thing you want
:43:52. > :43:54.to do at the end of the session is bring it back with all four wheels.
:43:55. > :43:58.When the cars come back from these sessions they're horrible, covered
:43:59. > :44:01.in muck and debris. You don't want to be having to fix the car during
:44:02. > :44:14.these sessions because it can take away from the effort you put in for
:44:15. > :44:20.qualify. Lap time is two or three seconds off the cross--over. Talking
:44:21. > :44:24.about the cross-over, when to switch from the wets to the
:44:25. > :44:29.interimmediatians. Tom? I wanted to follow up, we were talking about Red
:44:30. > :44:33.Bull earlier and Sebastien Vettel gets ready to come in. I was
:44:34. > :44:38.fascinated by what they did yesterday. They put an aerodynamic
:44:39. > :44:47.device onto the car yesterday so they could back-to-back next year's
:44:48. > :44:52.prototype dry tyre with the hard compound tyre that the team are
:44:53. > :44:56.using this weekend, Gary, what could they have learned in those wet
:44:57. > :45:00.conditions with those slick tyres yesterday? None of the other teams
:45:01. > :45:04.did it. Why did Red Bull? I think they did it just because they had
:45:05. > :45:08.the equipment on there to measures something. In reality I think they
:45:09. > :45:13.would have learned very little. The thing you want to measure is when
:45:14. > :45:17.the car is in a high-speed corner, you want to measure the distortion
:45:18. > :45:22.in the tyre. The tyre goes down the straight at speed with a normal
:45:23. > :45:27.aerodynamic forces displacing the tyre and making it change its shape
:45:28. > :45:32.when it touches the ground. You want to see how it changes the airflow.
:45:33. > :45:36.And how it changes the airflow when you go through a high-speed corner
:45:37. > :45:41.with lots of tyre distortion. Those are the things that a tyre can
:45:42. > :45:45.influence dramatically. It was still wet, they wouldn't have lateral
:45:46. > :45:51.force to deflect the tyre. It wouldn't be quick down the straight
:45:52. > :45:55.I thought Ross Brawn made an interesting comment yesterday
:45:56. > :45:58.afternoon, when he was asked a similar question about why didn't
:45:59. > :46:03.you go out on the slick tyres? Red Bull always seem to be a step ahead.
:46:04. > :46:07.Ross just said, well in our opinion bad information is worse than no
:46:08. > :46:11.information. That was his comment. It can lead you astray. I think they
:46:12. > :46:17.only did it just because they had the kit on the car. I don't think we
:46:18. > :46:27.see Red Bull led astray too often. They do a quick job. Quick lap from
:46:28. > :46:33.Hamilton. 1. 29. 9. That was a good lap by Lewis. First driver into the
:46:34. > :46:36.1. 29. Maybe he's happier with the handling of the Mercedes today.
:46:37. > :46:43.Looking at Giedo Van der Garde. He had a bit of a moment. He was on the
:46:44. > :46:58.kerb, but he recovered. Rosberg is just going out. We have seen
:46:59. > :47:02.Hamilton go fastest of anybody. It's been a much quieter FP3 than normal.
:47:03. > :47:07.A couple of questions coming in. Thank you for those, as the pace
:47:08. > :47:10.begins to pick up. Question for you Gary from Matthew who says, "If I
:47:11. > :47:16.wanted to get into the strategy side of things, within an F1 team, what's
:47:17. > :47:21.the best way to go about that? You need good mathematical understanding
:47:22. > :47:26.because it's all about simulation. To be honest, you have to do that.
:47:27. > :47:30.You have to find yourself some way into motor racing. It doesn't matter
:47:31. > :47:34.what level, on your CV you need experience. If you can do that, the
:47:35. > :47:39.team can buy into it. It is a tough line, but it's something that can be
:47:40. > :47:42.done. Most of the strategists would have some sort of degree, whether
:47:43. > :47:47.it's engineering or a maths degree or something? Pure maths would be
:47:48. > :47:50.more for that side of thing. It depends on where you want to go in
:47:51. > :47:53.the future as well. Today is today. If you want to do the strategy work
:47:54. > :47:56.today, but tomorrow is another day, you don't know what's going to
:47:57. > :48:00.happen. If you do that well, you will always step up the team or get
:48:01. > :48:04.the offers to step up the team. All the education you can get, put that
:48:05. > :48:14.as a package and get yourself in the door with a F3 team, or GP 2,
:48:15. > :48:20.something to sell to a Formula One team. Daniel Kyviat was with us
:48:21. > :48:23.yesterday. He had driven in the morning. We were impressed by his
:48:24. > :48:27.driving and how he chatted to us later in the day. He speaks several
:48:28. > :48:32.languages, born in Russia, moved to Italy when he was 13. Speaks
:48:33. > :48:35.Russian, Italian and also Spanish and very fluent English. He lives in
:48:36. > :48:40.Milton Keynes at the moment. I think he'll be dog a lot of work on the
:48:41. > :48:46.simulators over the winter. Now done to Jenny. I think you have news from
:48:47. > :48:51.McLaren. Yes, Jenson Button just standing with his race engineer,
:48:52. > :48:56.Dave. They're working on a few tweaks on the car. What I want to
:48:57. > :49:04.show you, look at the back, the rear wing. Remember that formation, not
:49:05. > :49:11.much low downforce. And let's look at Sergio Perez's car. You can see a
:49:12. > :49:19.different set up. Lock at the back, completely different rear wing.
:49:20. > :49:24.Inner there there is a monkey seat. They're going in two very different
:49:25. > :49:30.directions at the moment. The thing is to try to get the best out of the
:49:31. > :49:33.car possible. If you aren't -- if you aren't sure about the weather
:49:34. > :49:38.tomorrow, you need speed. Running two cars differently is not the
:49:39. > :49:42.wrong thing for sure. Hamilton, interestingly came back in the pits.
:49:43. > :49:47.He had done the fastest first sector of anybody, then he came out of it.
:49:48. > :49:52.He came back into the pits. Presumably they're looking after the
:49:53. > :49:55.tyres. He is fastest any way. Probably looking after the tyres,
:49:56. > :49:59.but it might have been a little mistake. The midsection of this
:50:00. > :50:03.track you can make loads of mistakes. Then you give up because
:50:04. > :50:07.there's no point in running the tyres the rest of the lap. You know
:50:08. > :50:12.it's not going to be faster. It is about looking after the tyres. It's
:50:13. > :50:16.a strange world because three sets of these wet tyres, it sounds like a
:50:17. > :50:22.lot, but actually it's not very much. That's right. We have Paul
:50:23. > :50:27.Hembry with us explaining they can't justify flying around many more sets
:50:28. > :50:31.of wet tyres for the relatively rare occasions. We do follow the sun in
:50:32. > :50:36.formula unwith. Generally -- Formula One. Generally we have dry events.
:50:37. > :50:41.We've had a few wet qualifying sessions but not a fully wet Grand
:50:42. > :50:45.Prix since Brazil last year. That was fully wet at times. It's been a
:50:46. > :50:50.whole year since we've had one. Yeah, and more tyres is just more
:50:51. > :50:56.tyres. What the should do is replace the wets, if you use them, or the
:50:57. > :50:59.intermediates if you use them on the Friday. That would mean carrying an
:51:00. > :51:05.extra set of tyres, but it wouldn't always be used. You don't have to
:51:06. > :51:09.take it everywhere. This place we've come, how many times it's been wet,
:51:10. > :51:14.so you know where you have to bring them to. We've seen a lot of wet
:51:15. > :51:25.events in the past. Gutierrez is second fastest. He's done 1. 31.
:51:26. > :51:30.16789? -- 1. 31. 1. Hulkenberg is third fastest. Sutil is fourth.
:51:31. > :51:35.Vettel is five being with the time -- fifth with the time from earlier
:51:36. > :51:42.on. Perez is eighth. Van der Garde is ninth. Bianchi 10th and Chilton
:51:43. > :51:50.11th. No, 12th. We have Charles Pic in between the two Marussias.
:51:51. > :51:55.Charles Pic is on track. It looks as though Caterham have a bit more
:51:56. > :51:59.speed than Marussia in the wet. They have more downforce on the car. That
:52:00. > :52:03.squashes the car into the track and give them more grip. Downforce is
:52:04. > :52:07.everything in the wet. Tomorrow's weather forecast we're not sure
:52:08. > :52:12.about. But this surface here because of the long pit straight and the
:52:13. > :52:21.first part is uphill, with too much downforce it's easier to pass into
:52:22. > :52:25.turn one. A lot of understeer. We gather that Sauber are running
:52:26. > :52:28.two different set-ups on their car. Useful feed back from Nico
:52:29. > :52:33.Hulkenberg there as they try to work out which set up is the one to go
:52:34. > :52:39.for. If anybody was going for a lower downforce set up, Hulkenberg
:52:40. > :52:42.would be the man. If you're going to split your cars, Hulkenberg would be
:52:43. > :52:47.any choice of being able to cope with the downforce level is a bit
:52:48. > :53:05.less. A lot of these decisions will have to be made quickly. -- minutes
:53:06. > :53:09.-- 20 minutes left to go. You can see the wet tyres on the car. Very
:53:10. > :53:14.deeply treaded, full extreme wet tyres on the Sauber. The more
:53:15. > :53:21.lightly treaded version, different pattern that you see on the
:53:22. > :53:26.intermediate. X Chilton is on the circuit. He didn't do free practice
:53:27. > :53:30.1 in the morning, they had the free driver in the morning. He's trying
:53:31. > :53:34.to learn the track. It's only been wet. He hasn't done any dry laps in
:53:35. > :53:38.either of the sessions. None of them have of course, but he's learning
:53:39. > :53:50.the track. It will be interesting if it dries up over tomorrow's Grand
:53:51. > :53:54.Prix. I think Pic and Van der Garde have been here. Tom, what do you
:53:55. > :53:58.have for us? Good news for myself and Jenny is that it's stopped
:53:59. > :54:03.raining in the pit lane. Mark Webber is the first guy out on intermediate
:54:04. > :54:10.tyres. You have to remember, this afternoon we could end up with a
:54:11. > :54:13.drying qualifying session, as we saw in 2010, when Nico Hulkenberg kept
:54:14. > :54:17.the car on the road on the driest bit of the session and took pole
:54:18. > :54:22.position. I expect to see a lot of cars out now. I know it's the end of
:54:23. > :54:27.the session any way. Get out on the intermediate now and try to simulate
:54:28. > :54:32.what we will see this afternoon. That's very likely. Big slide for
:54:33. > :54:39.Chilton. He has enough run-off to use. It was graceful for a while.
:54:40. > :54:44.Eventually he had to run of the Tarmac into the run-off area. A bit
:54:45. > :54:50.of bright nts around. -- brightness around. It's misty our window and
:54:51. > :54:58.it's hard to see when it's raining or not. But we can see it's
:54:59. > :55:04.brightening up along Sao Paulo. This is Max Chilton. Well held. Lots of
:55:05. > :55:07.steering lock on there. He picked up the car well. Going out on
:55:08. > :55:11.intermediates right now, I agree with the fact you need to find out
:55:12. > :55:15.some time. But there is enough time to have left it longer. The rain has
:55:16. > :55:26.stopped. The track will only get that bit better for a few minutes. I
:55:27. > :55:34.think it might be early tore Mark Webber at the moment. Currently on
:55:35. > :55:39.track. He's in the middle sector of the lap currently. We'll see how he
:55:40. > :55:50.gets on with that. He's gone through turn five. There he is, coming up to
:55:51. > :55:55.turn six. Let's see how he gets on on these intermediate tyres. The
:55:56. > :56:00.full wets clear the water at 60 litres per second. The intermediates
:56:01. > :56:06.about 20 a second. The full wets really clear the water at an amazing
:56:07. > :56:09.rate. Yeah, they do. It's 60 litres a second, that's like filling a
:56:10. > :56:16.bathtub in four seconds. The faster you go, the more it pumps, not just
:56:17. > :56:21.because of the grooves in there. It's actually because those grooves
:56:22. > :56:25.are built, so as they distort they act like a pump. The water is pumped
:56:26. > :56:30.out. Less grooves on the intermediates less pumping of water.
:56:31. > :56:37.This is on board with Mark Webber. We node a slightly clearer visor.
:56:38. > :56:44.That's a great shot. He's gone fastest. 1. 29. 9.4. He's fastest in
:56:45. > :56:51.the middle sector, not quite the fastest in the first and third. That
:56:52. > :56:57.indicates they're running a lot of downforce. He got on the grass
:56:58. > :57:01.there. That's a bit soggy now. Mark Webber, remember those intermediates
:57:02. > :57:07.that he has on are brand new compared to used wets from yesterday
:57:08. > :57:13.that are on the other cars. Slightly biassed comparison. You could do 27
:57:14. > :57:24.or 28 on the wet tire if it was brand new as well. Webber is so far.
:57:25. > :57:28.He has gone quite early. He may end up dropping down the order in the
:57:29. > :57:31.final minutes. It doesn't matter. This doesn't count towards the grid
:57:32. > :57:34.position of course. All it counts towards is the driver's experience
:57:35. > :57:40.of the conditions, trying to learn when it is the right time to go onto
:57:41. > :57:48.the intermediate. The cross over is just under the 1. 30 mark? Yes, I
:57:49. > :57:56.would say 1. 28. If you can do that and be safer than doing 1. 29 on the
:57:57. > :58:00.intermediate. I feel like Michael Fish at the minute. I told you the
:58:01. > :58:03.weather is getting better but now it's getting worse. The rain is
:58:04. > :58:06.coming down and it looks as if Mark Webber might have had the best of
:58:07. > :58:13.the track conditions. He's just den a very quick lap. You -- just done a
:58:14. > :58:18.very quick lap. He's massively quicker than anybody else. It's two
:58:19. > :58:27.seconds faster than Lewis Hamilton did earlier on. Changing conditions
:58:28. > :58:35.and you suddenly depet I lap -- get a lap, if you hit the sweet spot.
:58:36. > :58:39.Williams have dispensed with the exhaust blowing the extra downforce
:58:40. > :58:44.than created by the exhaust systems, they've been struggling with it from
:58:45. > :58:47.the end of last year, never got it quite right. They've got rid of it
:58:48. > :58:53.all together. Everything is a compromise. When the exhaust is
:58:54. > :58:57.blowing, the bodywork sweeps inside the rear wheels an you compromise
:58:58. > :59:01.that area. You lose overall downforce. As long as exhaust
:59:02. > :59:05.blowing works well, you get the downforce back with traction, which
:59:06. > :59:09.is when you want it. If it doesn't work well, you have lost something
:59:10. > :59:13.from the set up of the car. Sometimes it's better to put it in
:59:14. > :59:20.the bin. Hulkenberg has begun third fastest there. He had a moment
:59:21. > :59:24.through turn 15, turn 14 in fact. Paul di Resta had hay shunt up there
:59:25. > :59:31.last year at the end of the Grand Prix. We gather both it Ferrari and
:59:32. > :59:34.Mercedes are not going to be out any further. They are saving tyres
:59:35. > :59:37.rather than getting experience for the track in these conditions. They
:59:38. > :59:42.feel they've done enough over the three practice sessions so far today
:59:43. > :59:47.that they don't need to, or over the weekend, that they don't need to go
:59:48. > :59:51.out now. It's an interesting choice. It is, but in reality, the track is
:59:52. > :59:55.changing so much in conditions, it's about getting in the car and
:59:56. > :59:59.adapting when qualifying comes. You can't take much from this session as
:00:00. > :00:02.far as what's going to happen in qualifying. You have to wait and
:00:03. > :00:07.make sure you are ready for those set of circumstances that might suit
:00:08. > :00:10.your car and your driver to put intermediates or wets on, that will
:00:11. > :00:14.happen during qualifying. They will work towards qualifying, perhaps
:00:15. > :00:20.going for a full wet set up if they think it's going to be raining in
:00:21. > :00:24.the race. Gutierrez has done 17 laps during this session. Next best 12
:00:25. > :00:30.for Hulkenberg. So Sauber doing a lot of work here. They're
:00:31. > :00:34.experimenting between different set-ups. That might help them later.
:00:35. > :00:39.It's good to get laps under your belt, particularly for a less
:00:40. > :00:47.exeensed driver like -- experienced driver like Barry Estabrook. He
:00:48. > :00:52.could be one -- like Esteban Gutierrez. Vergne himself, by the
:00:53. > :00:57.way, he hasn't done a time yet. He has only just gone out. Gutierrez
:00:58. > :01:07.really is using the wide lines to the maximum. He almost hit the white
:01:08. > :01:13.line on the edge. Let's listen. We have higher left front temperature
:01:14. > :01:17.than the right. Still working on getting the temperatures right in
:01:18. > :01:23.the tyres. Bottas has gone in as well. He's quite a long way off what
:01:24. > :01:29.Webber did. But he's second. Kovalainen is fourth now. He always
:01:30. > :01:34.goes well in slippery conditions. Only a sect outing for Lotus. This
:01:35. > :01:37.is Romain Grosjean's car, star of the last Grand Prix when he finished
:01:38. > :01:43.second, splitting the two Red Bulls. He has gone eighth. Confidence boost
:01:44. > :01:47.for Heikki Kovalainen there, having set the fourth fastest time. He out
:01:48. > :01:50.paced Grosjean yesterday. He has outpaced him so far today. What
:01:51. > :01:56.counts is qualifying. Grosjean knows that. He may be keeping a little in
:01:57. > :02:00.reserve. A lock up for Hulkenberg. You can see he was trying to turn
:02:01. > :02:05.into the corner. He got the brakes locked. These tyres don't like
:02:06. > :02:11.turning and braking. He's definitely, front brakes a bit dodgy
:02:12. > :02:14.for him. That was the outside tyre. It implies the tyre temperature
:02:15. > :02:20.isn't quite right. Yeah, it does. When you lock up, it's hard, you
:02:21. > :02:23.have to get off the brakes. Thalingz the last thing you want to do --
:02:24. > :02:29.that's the last thing you want to do. In these conditions the tyres
:02:30. > :02:33.cool so quickly. Second fastest. Another good lap. Maybe it's about
:02:34. > :02:38.living in Finland. These guys seem to be so good in the wet conditions.
:02:39. > :02:43.Jean-Eric Vergne saying that his car is pulling massively to the left,
:02:44. > :02:48.he's told the guys on the radio. He's been told work your brakes, we
:02:49. > :02:52.have higher temperatures on one side than the other. It looked like Nico
:02:53. > :02:56.Hulkenberg. Ing that an issue for the teams. The brakes around here
:02:57. > :02:59.get different temperatures. Some people have brake ducts as well.
:03:00. > :03:06.There is different cooling on them because of that problem. You pointed
:03:07. > :03:09.that out on the Mercedes yesterday that one brake duct had a hole in
:03:10. > :03:13.the top and the other was solid. Grosjean goes second. There's not
:03:14. > :03:20.much between them. Lotus should be happy about that. A nod of the head
:03:21. > :03:27.from iric. That's good effort. Still -- Eric. That's good effort. Still
:03:28. > :03:31.trying to beat Ferrari for third. Two drivers scoring, you can get big
:03:32. > :03:35.shifts at the end of the season. That's what they're looking for.
:03:36. > :03:39.It's a culmination of both drivers' points. The maximum you can score 43
:03:40. > :03:44.points, if you get a first and second. Not pane of those done. Red
:03:45. > :03:50.Bull have had a couple this year. If you were lucky enough to fall into
:03:51. > :03:54.that, it's big points. Hulkenberg has gone fifth on that lap. Good
:03:55. > :03:58.first sector, faster than anyone in the first sector, lost out in the
:03:59. > :04:01.middle sector. That's where he didn't gain the time. We're watching
:04:02. > :04:07.Gutierrez, his team-mates still going around. He's burned through
:04:08. > :04:12.the fuel a bit today. He's been a busy boy. Yes, very busy. That flick
:04:13. > :04:17.there. That's scary. That's a flick you don't want. A couple of people
:04:18. > :04:21.have flicks there and end up with consequences. That's a very fast
:04:22. > :04:25.corner. In the dry, it's not really a corner. But in the wet it's
:04:26. > :04:29.seriously a corner. Some quick reactions from Gutierrez. We have
:04:30. > :04:34.saw that from Hulkenberg as well. Di Resta crosses the line. He's tenth.
:04:35. > :04:38.Haven't seen a lot of Force India. They are now. They've decided to
:04:39. > :04:46.leave it at the end. They're pretty evenly matched.
:04:47. > :05:09.The checkered flag is about to come out on the session. F #36r3 comes to
:05:10. > :05:23.a conclusion with Mark Webber quickest. -- FP3. Ricciardo is 1. 5
:05:24. > :05:28.seconds down at the moment. Let's watch him up the hill and see how
:05:29. > :05:32.stable the car is. No problem through there. Even using the
:05:33. > :05:37.painted outside green part. That's pretty brave. I think I'd stay off
:05:38. > :05:47.that bit. He seemed to deal with it OK. Ricciardo comes through and is
:05:48. > :05:51.#107b8g. -- 10th. We know Jean-Eric Vergne likes the wet conditions.
:05:52. > :06:02.Gutierrez sixth there and Vergne goes sixth now. He splits the
:06:03. > :06:06.soubers. Once -- Saubers. Vergne is recognised to be a wet weather
:06:07. > :06:11.specialist. Ricciardo could have his work cut out if it stays like this.
:06:12. > :06:17.Di Resta also still slightly quicker. He maintains the edge over
:06:18. > :06:20.his team-mate. Two strong team-mates at Force India. They push each other
:06:21. > :06:27.along. Who else is to finish? Charles Pic is about to come around
:06:28. > :06:30.through this last little loop. He's in 16th place. Can he find a tenth
:06:31. > :06:41.on this lap and go ahead of his team-mate? Yes, he does. So the
:06:42. > :06:47.third practice session has ended with a man leaving Formula One
:06:48. > :06:50.fastest of all. That's got to be a nice feeling, 1. 27, the only one in
:06:51. > :07:04.1. 27. 8. Hamilton is in 11th place. He wasn't
:07:05. > :07:09.running at the end. That applies for the front runners. Ricciardo 12th,
:07:10. > :07:13.Bianchi ahead of Pic, Chilton and Van der Garde. Vettel was 17th at
:07:14. > :07:18.the end. When he was out there, he was competitive. Perez didn't do
:07:19. > :07:20.that many laps. He's 18th. Rosberg didn't bother setting the time at
:07:21. > :07:35.all. Jenson Button didn't do any lap
:07:36. > :07:39.times. Massa same story. A lot of teams just concentrating on saving
:07:40. > :07:43.their tyres for qualifying. That's important. I think the mix between
:07:44. > :07:47.Bottas, Hulkenberg, Vergne, Gutierrez, Maldonado, that's great,
:07:48. > :07:50.to see the small teams getting themselves up there. You have to
:07:51. > :07:55.make the right decisions come qualifying. What you did in this
:07:56. > :08:02.session doesn't really matter, but they'll be all right in qualifying.
:08:03. > :08:05.Fastest in FP3. He will be one of those fighting for pole position I'm
:08:06. > :08:12.sure. He's done well here in the past, two-time winner of this
:08:13. > :08:14.circuit we'll keep an eye on Rosberg, Hamilton and Sebastien
:08:15. > :08:17.Vettel. Not a very representative session,
:08:18. > :08:21.but the rain will not spoil things. There are so many stories here this
:08:22. > :08:24.weekend. Sebastien Vettel looking for his ninth consecutive
:08:25. > :08:29.record-breaking victory. Mark Webber, fastest in that session,
:08:30. > :08:34.he's hoping to bow out from Formula One with a win. Felipe Massa driving
:08:35. > :08:38.for Ferrari for the last time after eight years. A lot of drivers here
:08:39. > :08:42.don't know if they'll be in Formula One next year, eight seats up for
:08:43. > :08:44.grabs, well a lot of drivers on the market. Find out more about all of
:08:45. > :08:55.this in just one hour, BBC One, 3pm:
