:00:57. > :01:04.Qualifying issue to start in ten minutes but they cannot go out in

:01:05. > :01:09.these conditions. We had the same conditions five years ago, and I was

:01:10. > :01:12.speaking to David Coulthard about it, it was very funny, we just need

:01:13. > :01:16.to brace ourselves and keep chatting and make sure the people at home

:01:17. > :01:19.stay with us, because when she get going, these ten cars will be

:01:20. > :01:38.electric and it will be worth the wait. This season has been dominated

:01:39. > :01:43.by the mastery of Sebastian Vettel. 13 wins in the season, he will be

:01:44. > :01:51.equalling Michael Schumacher. He is a master of Formula 1. These records

:01:52. > :01:59.mean so much. He has great human spirit. He can be hugely emotional.

:02:00. > :02:07.He can see aspects of life where he will enjoy this for as long as he

:02:08. > :02:12.lives. He is a very endearing boy. You would be very happy to have him

:02:13. > :02:18.as a son of yours. He is a top-quality guy, a great ambassador

:02:19. > :02:26.for our sport. He was incredibly emotional. He was kind of choked at

:02:27. > :02:34.the end. He said, this might not last for ever, we have got to grab

:02:35. > :02:45.hold of these moments. Of course, he is the star, it is box office, but

:02:46. > :02:57.it takes more than an individual to win. Strategy is vital in Formula 1,

:02:58. > :03:06.as Gary Anderson will explain. Formula 1 on race day, when the

:03:07. > :03:09.lights go out it is mathematical. They have to perform many

:03:10. > :03:14.calculation is to come up with the best risk strategy. Tyre

:03:15. > :03:21.management, fuel load, car and driver weight have to be taken into

:03:22. > :03:29.account to ensure peak performance. The rate of the car plus the driver

:03:30. > :03:38.less any fuel has to be a minimum of 642 kilograms -- the weight of the

:03:39. > :03:43.car. Let's say it is 56 lap race, it means 2.5 kilograms per lap times 55

:03:44. > :03:56.laps, equals 140 kilograms of fuel for the race distance. The car now

:03:57. > :03:59.weighs 782 kilograms. Confused, yet? Stick with me for a while longer.

:04:00. > :04:17.There will also be a safety buffer. Be warned, any extra weight comes at

:04:18. > :04:21.a cost in performance. As speed increases, so does the stress on the

:04:22. > :04:25.engine, meaning drivers may be asked to turn down their engine performs,

:04:26. > :04:32.conserving fuel and resisting the stress on the engine -- reducing.

:04:33. > :04:37.Tyre performance and durability also come into play. How many pit stops

:04:38. > :04:41.and which laps you have to stop. Each team has legions of tacticians

:04:42. > :04:46.analysing the race lap by lap to see how the strategy has do change.

:04:47. > :04:50.Considering a pit stop as an overall loss time of approximately 18

:04:51. > :04:55.seconds, this fresh tyres have to make up the lost time. Get this

:04:56. > :04:59.wrong and it is difficult to make up the lost time. If the team has

:05:00. > :05:05.everything right it is down to the driver's skill, reliability and luck

:05:06. > :05:08.to see the driver through to the chequered flag, and if they are

:05:09. > :05:16.really lucky they could be on the podium. Sebastian Vettel has hardly

:05:17. > :05:20.been of the podium this season. You can learn about the science of

:05:21. > :05:26.Formula 1 on our website. Loads of content on there. It is a great

:05:27. > :05:36.column that Lewis Hamilton dies prior to every race. -- that Lewis

:05:37. > :05:37.Hamilton does. It is stopping raining, Christian is on the pit

:05:38. > :05:53.wall. Can you hear me? I can. Are you dry? Very. These are

:05:54. > :06:00.confusing times, what are the thoughts of the drivers? It breaks

:06:01. > :06:03.the rhythm a little bit. They are getting their thoughts together

:06:04. > :06:14.again. It looks like it is drying up. They don't like getting out of

:06:15. > :06:21.the car. It looks like it is going to start in five minutes, Eddie has

:06:22. > :06:25.a question. You are evaluating the crossover time, the full wets to

:06:26. > :06:29.when you may be able to get a couple of laps for the intermediates, is

:06:30. > :06:33.that how you are looking at the situation?

:06:34. > :06:40.We have said how quickly the water can disappear. There's quite a of

:06:41. > :06:43.standing water. The medical car is going around, still a lot of

:06:44. > :06:53.standing water. I would be surprised if it did get to intermediates. Ten

:06:54. > :06:59.cars pounding around at pace, the spray will be dissipated over the

:07:00. > :07:05.track. My guess is we may see somebody taking chances at the end

:07:06. > :07:09.to get the benefit. You may well, it is going to be a driver caught,

:07:10. > :07:17.still a lot of standing water. Somebody may take that punt -- a

:07:18. > :07:25.driver call. In terms of crossover time, wet to intermediates, what are

:07:26. > :07:30.you thinking? You're talking 28, 29, something along those lines.

:07:31. > :07:39.Everybody is going to be good to the screen in the first flying lap. What

:07:40. > :07:46.an awkward question. He doesn't want to give his secrets away! Fine!

:07:47. > :07:55.We watched a piece about the strategy of the teams and the men

:07:56. > :07:58.who are behind the box office, how many people have you got in the red

:07:59. > :08:07.Bull team who work towards this qualifying session? Within the

:08:08. > :08:12.company we are over 600 people. About 80 of them are here. The rest

:08:13. > :08:19.are working very hard back in the factory in Milton Keynes. We have

:08:20. > :08:27.people in the factory who are supporting us. It is fascinating for

:08:28. > :08:34.anybody at home, you are sitting on the pit wall and you have the team

:08:35. > :08:37.behind you in the garage. That strategy coming from Milton Keynes

:08:38. > :08:43.as well, it is an incredible pull together. You won the constructors

:08:44. > :08:50.championship. How do you celebrate with those guys? We are going to

:08:51. > :08:55.have a big bash at the end of the year. What doesn't get recognised is

:08:56. > :08:59.it is teamwork at its most extreme. Getting over 600 people to work

:09:00. > :09:11.collectively in one group for one common goal, it is teamwork at its

:09:12. > :09:15.best. Thank you for your time and hopefully we will hear from you

:09:16. > :09:19.during this session. Let's pop up to the commentary box. How do you see

:09:20. > :09:25.this going? COMMENTATORS: We are getting ready

:09:26. > :09:29.for some real action, Q3 will be getting underway in a couple of

:09:30. > :09:40.minutes. Red Bull sending cars to the end of the pit lane. Intent on

:09:41. > :09:45.getting a quick lap in. The teams are so good at running the engines

:09:46. > :09:49.and not overheating because, they cut the number of cylinders that the

:09:50. > :09:59.car is running on. I know it is not as hot as some places. Even so there

:10:00. > :10:05.is no other way to cool the engine. They run over 100 degrees without

:10:06. > :10:09.pulling themselves. They probably left 75 or 80 degrees in temperature

:10:10. > :10:15.and they will be creeping up, the driver will be watching the

:10:16. > :10:22.temperature. They monitor that in the garages as well with the race

:10:23. > :10:25.engineers. This is something they do preseason to know how long they can

:10:26. > :10:32.run the car before it gets too critical temperature. They will go

:10:33. > :10:38.to 140 degrees before you need to start worrying about it melting

:10:39. > :10:43.itself so plenty of margin. Red Bull don't want to be caught short, they

:10:44. > :10:45.are going to be first out. The downside is you lose a massive

:10:46. > :10:54.amount of temperature from your tyres. If purple denotes cold, they

:10:55. > :10:59.are pretty cold. You can see the orange glow of the radiator. Prior

:11:00. > :11:10.to the start of qualifying you are allowed to hit your brakes, not once

:11:11. > :11:23.you are in the qualifying session -- hit up your brakes.

:11:24. > :11:29.The Red Bulls are at the end but everyone else seems to be waiting,

:11:30. > :11:36.clearly they think the track is going to get drier and drier. 47

:11:37. > :11:41.minutes between track action here. The final Q3 session eventually gets

:11:42. > :11:44.underway at Interlagos in Brazil. The two Red Bull is our first onto

:11:45. > :11:54.the circuit. We have Daniel Ricciardo. Full wet tyres, the blue

:11:55. > :12:05.side wall. I think there might be a chance for intermediates by the end

:12:06. > :12:11.of this. I am not sure if it is a good thing to do. At the end of the

:12:12. > :12:22.session, somebody will take a gamble and it will be of value. It has lost

:12:23. > :12:25.the heat, we have gone to boring black. Everything has gone. Sitting

:12:26. > :12:30.there, for two minutes is a long time, we can see a bit of colour

:12:31. > :12:35.inside the rim, where the brakes are, they will be slopping and

:12:36. > :12:38.sliding round, would imagine intermediates for the last run at

:12:39. > :12:42.least. A final prediction, who will be on pole position? That is a

:12:43. > :12:48.question. Think Rosberg, because he has done a good job up to now. If he

:12:49. > :12:52.can get a clear lap in. You get the tyre temperature quicker. Let us see

:12:53. > :12:56.what happens, the Red Bulls are out there as you can see, the track map

:12:57. > :13:01.showing where everybody is. Webber has the first clear run but Vettel

:13:02. > :13:04.is behind him. Rosberg and Hamilton, Alonso are on track further back, I

:13:05. > :13:10.think all of them are out. Grosjean, yes, he is out, Hulkenberg, so is

:13:11. > :13:15.Vergne and Rick doe, so the track getting busier. -- Ricciardo.

:13:16. > :13:19.Webber goes on to the lap. This is the difficult bit of the driver. How

:13:20. > :13:23.do you assessors how much grip you have to play with? You have no idea.

:13:24. > :13:27.The track has changed since you were last out. This is just using your

:13:28. > :13:32.experience and best judgment to try and avoid the wet patches, you can

:13:33. > :13:36.see how much spray there is. With every lap a car completes you chuck

:13:37. > :13:40.that spray up into the air and it gets thrown off the race track, so

:13:41. > :13:47.the track will get faster and faster, we have a 22.6 first 22.2

:13:48. > :13:51.first sector from the Red Bull, which would be an indication of a

:13:52. > :13:55.cross over to intermediate tyre, so they may not do more than they could

:13:56. > :14:00.come in at the end of the lap, but they may choose to do one lap on the

:14:01. > :14:04.full wet, to get themselves back up to speed, get heat penetrated into

:14:05. > :14:08.the up right and the brake system, before coming and putting the

:14:09. > :14:11.intermediate tyres on. Coming up to the second checkpoint. Webber still

:14:12. > :14:15.ahead of Vettel, but it was Vettel who had the quicker first set.

:14:16. > :14:22.Grosjean is faster than either of them in the first sector now. Coming

:14:23. > :14:26.through the second set, to 1.09 for Webber

:14:27. > :14:31.ON RADIO: Very low regroup. Understood. Keep up the face. You

:14:32. > :14:40.can see the back end of the car switching. You can see, very low

:14:41. > :14:48.rare grip. Alonso has been told for inters. We are not far off the cross

:14:49. > :14:52.over time. It is 1: 28.8. We could see the cars on intermediates any

:14:53. > :14:58.moment. There is not a lot of running water on the track. A bit of

:14:59. > :15:02.oversteer as he climbs up the hill. He is faster in the first sector.

:15:03. > :15:05.Grosjean looking good. Rosberg looking good. This could be quicker

:15:06. > :15:09.than either, he is coming straight in, we won't see how fast it could

:15:10. > :15:14.have been because they have decided to go for intermediates straight

:15:15. > :15:18.away. Rosberg, is he goes going to get a lap in. It's a banker lap.

:15:19. > :15:22.Sometimes it is a good idea to put a banker lap in and he splits the Red

:15:23. > :15:27.Bulls so it is Vettel, Rosberg, Webber. Ricciardo has rowed a time.

:15:28. > :15:31.Valtteri Bottas is out of this part of qualifying, he has qualified 13th

:15:32. > :15:35.on the grid but Grosjean has decided to go for the intermediates. There

:15:36. > :15:40.they are, fitted to the car. Still just under six months.

:15:41. > :15:45.ON RADIO: What do you want to do Sebastien? No hesitation from

:15:46. > :15:48.Vettel. He knows what he wants. An interesting difference in strategy,

:15:49. > :15:53.they could have brought them in straight ja. Lotus brought Grosjean

:15:54. > :15:57.in straight away. On the other hand the intermediate needs to be at the

:15:58. > :16:00.freshest. So perhaps Red Bull are happy the guys have a bit of

:16:01. > :16:04.experience of the track and they will have the intermediates on at

:16:05. > :16:08.the end of the session. Mark Webber Dais into the pit, so he is coming

:16:09. > :16:13.from his intermediates as well. He is running just a bit ahead of

:16:14. > :16:17.Vettel. So he will be able to get his car services. There is Vettel

:16:18. > :16:25.joining in. Vettel might have to coup ever so slightly. They do do

:16:26. > :16:29.under three second pit-stops. They had a record in Austin. It was

:16:30. > :16:33.magnificent work by the Red Bull crew. Meanwhile at Lotus they have

:16:34. > :16:39.sent their man out already. Grosjean, only one car in the top

:16:40. > :16:44.ten, so away he go, Vettel. Kovalainen didn't make it into the

:16:45. > :16:49.top ten shoot out. But we have Massa and Alonso. Alonso is fifth. Massa

:16:50. > :16:54.in ninth. Hulkenberg in Q3 again, in the Sauber. He has had a good record

:16:55. > :16:58.of going into Q3 recently, he has maintained it again on this occasion

:16:59. > :17:02.can he get a bit further up the order? We will see. Jean-Eric Vergne

:17:03. > :17:05.one to watch. We know his wet weather pace can be astonishing, he

:17:06. > :17:08.has decided to come in They are bailing out. They will get

:17:09. > :17:12.investigation from their engineers telling them what the others are

:17:13. > :17:19.doing. Rosberg is in as well. So, is this going to work to Lotus's

:17:20. > :17:23.advantage? Mercedes looking attentively down the pit lane.

:17:24. > :17:27.Everyone turning to see as the guys are ready to fit the intermediate

:17:28. > :17:31.times now. Not the kind of pressure that is on in the middle of a race

:17:32. > :17:35.but it still needs to be done cleanly. Four minutes to go then in

:17:36. > :17:39.the final part of qualifying. Mercedes stacking their cars as

:17:40. > :17:45.Rosberg gets going. Hamilton has come in, Hamilton currently third

:17:46. > :17:52.fastest, behind Rosberg, stacking the Ferraris. Looking at the first

:17:53. > :17:58.sector from Grosjean, a 22.1. That is not as quick as we saw from the

:17:59. > :18:03.Red Bulls. It is going to take a lap or to get the tyres in. Find where

:18:04. > :18:07.the track conditions are. It is going to be about that last flying

:18:08. > :18:11.lap. Could be the last man across the line. He could be on pole this

:18:12. > :18:14.after noon. It is exciting stuff. Grosjean never had a pole position

:18:15. > :18:20.in Formula One, could he challenge for it in these conditions, or are

:18:21. > :18:22.we going to see Mercedes break the stranglehold which that existed for

:18:23. > :18:26.Red Bull. ON RADIO: We think there is rain at

:18:27. > :18:32.the end. Make sure the first laps count. If that the case Lotus's

:18:33. > :18:39.decision was a good one. They got him out first on the inter#3450ed

:18:40. > :18:48.yachts You can take off so many Ss at the end of laps! Crucial lap for

:18:49. > :18:52.Grosjean. Grosjean, 1: 27.7. Put under massive -- massive pressure.

:18:53. > :18:57.You can see the delight. Nobody knows if that is going to be enough.

:18:58. > :19:04.Vettel is faster. We join Webber as he was looking up into turn seven.

:19:05. > :19:12.Sound bg very tentative as he tries to accelerate -- sounding out of

:19:13. > :19:17.nine. This is him into ten. Vettel fastest in the first sectors

:19:18. > :19:25.Rosberg has done the fastest last sector, but as hopes his lap, this

:19:26. > :19:32.is looking quite cautious. He comes up the hill, he is quicker in both

:19:33. > :19:35.first and second sector. Vettel is going quicker. He is fastest in the

:19:36. > :19:39.middle sector. Let us see what Webber does, is it enough to

:19:40. > :19:43.displace Grosjean? Yes, but Vettel is going faster than him behind, got

:19:44. > :19:49.another lap here, Mark Webber. He will get maybe two laps in in fact,

:19:50. > :19:55.as you see, there is Vettels. He goes fastest. 1: 26.4. That was a

:19:56. > :19:59.good lap in conditions he is still trying to reed and understand. What

:20:00. > :20:04.is going on behind? Rosberg and Hamilton are both on laps here, but

:20:05. > :20:08.they are about a tenth down in the first sector, on the Red Bull, let

:20:09. > :20:13.us see how they can make up time We join Rosberg with a big power slide

:20:14. > :20:18.in nine. Tidy out of ten. Hesitant as he goes through the dip,

:20:19. > :20:20.through 11. He is down on the sectors. Not quite as quick as the

:20:21. > :20:25.Red Bulls. Well, this is going to be his last

:20:26. > :20:31.flying lap, so one more lap to see if he can show the form he had on

:20:32. > :20:34.Friday. Quickest in both sessions. Hamilton almost identical to the

:20:35. > :20:40.second sector point, so they are not as quick as the two Red Bull, across

:20:41. > :20:43.the line, Rosberg, he is quicker than Webber. Just under a tenth

:20:44. > :20:47.faster than Webber. Let us see what Lewis Hamilton can do. So evenly

:20:48. > :20:51.matched the Mercedes driver, who will come out on top in Brazil?

:20:52. > :20:57.Hamilton is not as quick on the lap. He still has another lap to go. He

:20:58. > :21:02.will see chequered flag. Flons in sixth position. His first sector

:21:03. > :21:06.reasonable but not anything particularly dramatic. Fernando

:21:07. > :21:11.Alonso. Vergne has gone sixth. He is ahead of the Ferrari. Looks to me

:21:12. > :21:16.that Vettel was doing a slow lap, to give himself one flying run at it.

:21:17. > :21:21.He is coming up to the line now. That is him starting his lap. Red

:21:22. > :21:25.Bull are good at timing their laps. Alonso goes second. Up to second

:21:26. > :21:30.place. Just ahead of Rosberg, but only by the narrowest of margin,

:21:31. > :21:34.very tight behind. Massa goes seventh in the Ferrari. Grosjean has

:21:35. > :21:38.made a mistake in the middle sector and dropped a bit of time relative

:21:39. > :21:42.to his best. It is about the last run for the line. Ricciardo has gone

:21:43. > :21:45.seventh. Hulkenberg has been pushed down tenth. He has seen chequered

:21:46. > :21:50.flag and across the line goes Grosjean. He is sixth, with that

:21:51. > :21:54.time, so it is not going to be a front row start for Grosjean on this

:21:55. > :21:59.occasion, he is behind the Red Bull, and the Mercedes and one Ferrari, of

:22:00. > :22:03.Fernando Alonso. Alonso once again dragging a great time out of the

:22:04. > :22:08.car. What is going to happen in the closing moments? Rosberg is second,

:22:09. > :22:13.he hasn't managed to beat Vettel's time. Sebastian Vettel is out there,

:22:14. > :22:19.he is on a lap. Lewis Hamilton is on a lap. It is not a quick lap. Vergne

:22:20. > :22:23.could improve on his ninth place, we talked about his wet weather

:22:24. > :22:27.prowess, at the moment he is behind Daniel Ricciardo, but this is a

:22:28. > :22:33.better lap copping up from Jean-Eric Vergne, he goes eighth. So Ricciardo

:22:34. > :22:37.for once in the wet pips his team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne, let us

:22:38. > :22:42.see as Webber comes across the line, he stays in fourth position. Rosberg

:22:43. > :22:46.second, Alonso third. It looks as though Sebastian Vettel has done it

:22:47. > :22:49.yet again, let us keep an eye on Felipe Massa, he is on a reasonable

:22:50. > :22:54.lap here, it is a reasonable lap. Let us see how far up the top ten it

:22:55. > :23:00.puts him. It would give the fans something to here about. It is not

:23:01. > :23:05.enough in the end -- cheer about. He stays down in ninth position. Alonso

:23:06. > :23:10.has qualified third, but once again, pole position has gone to Sebastian

:23:11. > :23:15.Vettel. His ninth pole of the season. The 45th of his career. The

:23:16. > :23:18.eighth consecutive for the team, because of course they have been

:23:19. > :23:24.sharing pole positions between himself and Mark Webber in some of

:23:25. > :23:27.the recent events but it is still eight consecutive pole position

:23:28. > :23:31.authorise for that team. A remarkable performance, not as pole

:23:32. > :23:35.positions as he scored in 2011 but still a good effort. Good effort
