:01:08. > :01:14.coverage of the British Grand Prix. If you have been watching the

:01:14. > :01:17.repeats, that is the third time you have seen these titles this morning.

:01:17. > :01:22.Congratulations for sticking with it. This is the last practice

:01:22. > :01:25.session. One more hour for the teams to get prepared. Effectively, the

:01:26. > :01:30.first session yesterday was a waste of time because it was wet and the

:01:30. > :01:34.forecast is to be dry or weekend. A lot of work in the second session. A

:01:34. > :01:40.lot of the teams did well. But it was a struggle for fair roaring.

:01:40. > :01:45.Felipe Massa crashed. We can go down to the pit lane. What is the latest

:01:45. > :01:54.on the story, Tom? Ther RA have had a busy evening.

:01:54. > :01:58.They have completed Masser 's car. It has just arrived in the pits

:01:58. > :02:05.garrotte. This is going to be his first proper dry lap of the weekend.

:02:05. > :02:13.An important session coming up. Button and Hamilton yesterday were

:02:14. > :02:17.not happy of -- happy. Hamilton were struggling with hay fever. He was

:02:17. > :02:22.struggling with the car. He said he felt the least comfortable he has

:02:22. > :02:29.ever felt in the car. Not good ahead of this Grand Prix. The fans to our

:02:29. > :02:35.left are packing the stands. They have all got their flags at. Jenson

:02:36. > :02:38.Button went to wave to them. But he, too, was not happy. The car is not

:02:38. > :02:44.competitive this weekend. It is one second down from where they want to

:02:44. > :02:50.be. Painful times for our two leading Brits.

:02:50. > :02:55.Just a quick one on conditions? No sign of the sun at the moment. It

:02:55. > :03:03.is pretty chilly. Here I am standing to Jenny in her shirtsleeves. At the

:03:03. > :03:06.wind is much stronger than yesterday. -- but the wind. It will

:03:06. > :03:13.be tricky for the drivers because they are protected on the approach

:03:13. > :03:17.to cops. Then they suddenly come out of a grandstand into the open and

:03:17. > :03:24.the wind hits them. You can see a few loose rear ends through there.

:03:24. > :03:30.Let's pop up to the commentary box. The guys there are talking about

:03:30. > :03:39.Jenson and Lewis not feeling well. But Paul di Resta has been a star

:03:39. > :03:45.this weekend. He has. All of the team will be over here to support.

:03:45. > :03:49.It is a big race. When you can do that, you get the team behind you. I

:03:49. > :03:57.think he is up for the fight. He did not get the qualification in the

:03:57. > :04:03.last two races that he would like. And the Toro Rosso 's yesterday were

:04:03. > :04:11.doing well. The news that Mark Webber is leaving

:04:11. > :04:14.Red Bull and a plum seat has become available, you can bet they will be

:04:14. > :04:20.putting everything on the line because of that is akin to

:04:20. > :04:30.outqualified each other and get the cars in the top ten.

:04:30. > :04:30.

:04:30. > :04:38.McLaren were saying the track is not as bumpy as previously.

:04:38. > :04:41.They have tried to get rid of the bumps into the corners. We're just

:04:41. > :04:48.getting a bit of information from our teens. It makes a big

:04:48. > :04:51.difference. You can generate more downforce. That has been one of the

:04:52. > :04:57.car 's problems. The bumpy ride has not been good over the last few

:04:57. > :05:01.races. It is all about to kick off. I will

:05:01. > :05:11.hand over to you guys. This is the final practice session before

:05:11. > :05:13.

:05:13. > :05:23.yesterday morning when it was so quiet. Nico Hulkenberg its first out

:05:23. > :05:38.

:05:38. > :05:45.scene to put a car back together and practice area.

:05:45. > :05:52.The pit lane and exit is very small. There's no real reason for it. I

:05:52. > :05:59.don't understand why it's been so limited in size. It is tricky. You

:05:59. > :06:09.can go around the side of the car if you want to. It is a bit tricky.

:06:09. > :06:18.

:06:18. > :06:23.way goes grew John. A reminder -- Sebastian Vettel was third fastest

:06:23. > :06:33.yesterday. Paul di Resta was top Brit ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who

:06:33. > :06:42.was fifth. The two Toro Rosso guys were sixth and seventh. Adrian Sutil

:06:42. > :06:52.was eighth. Jenson Button was disgruntled down in 11th. McLaren

:06:52. > :06:53.

:06:53. > :07:01.were not as fast as they would like. Raikkonen was 13th. Further down,

:07:01. > :07:07.Gutierrez, among others. Max Chilton and Felipe Massa did not set a

:07:07. > :07:10.representative time. What they were doing there is

:07:10. > :07:18.putting the scales under the wheels. The weight distribution in these

:07:18. > :07:27.cars is important. You can move it a bit. The 1% makes a difference. You

:07:27. > :07:32.want to make sure you are as close to it as possible. The tyres are

:07:32. > :07:40.cold. They will be to the running pressures on the track. They will

:07:40. > :07:45.check the weight distribution. Then they took off the tyres and put on

:07:46. > :07:53.the heated ones in the blankets. The two tyres we are using, the

:07:53. > :07:59.Orange sidewall tire is a hard Pirelli tyre. Then we have got the

:07:59. > :08:09.medium as well, the Whitewater medium tyre. As you can see, it is a

:08:09. > :08:12.

:08:12. > :08:15.hard tire. No times have been set yet. We are on board with Raikkonen.

:08:15. > :08:25.Let's see how it is handling as he goes through the sequences of fast

:08:25. > :08:30.corners. This is a famous section. It is all about change of direction

:08:30. > :08:35.here. The wind is blowing up the back of

:08:35. > :08:45.the car. That is the thing that upsets the car. You can lose rear

:08:45. > :08:49.downforce. Through that Becketts complex will be tricky for the guys.

:08:49. > :08:54.It just means opening the line a little bit. Some of the corners you

:08:54. > :08:58.want to take earlier, some later. You were looking at the bodywork on

:08:59. > :09:04.the two Lotus cars yesterday. They were experimenting with what they

:09:04. > :09:10.call the device. It is a secondary system to reduce drag. What are they

:09:10. > :09:16.running today? It is still on there today. I'm not sure they can use it

:09:16. > :09:25.today. That is what takes the airflow up to the rear wing. It

:09:25. > :09:31.stores the rear wing. -- stalls. I'm not sure they will raise it here.

:09:31. > :09:38.But they had it on the car. If you run something on Saturday

:09:38. > :09:46.morning, you tend to run it in qualifying. But they don't have to.

:09:46. > :09:56.The car goes into parc ferme. Then you are not allowed to change the

:09:56. > :10:06.

:10:06. > :10:15.Big vibration already. Obviously he has just gone out, Lewis Hamilton.

:10:15. > :10:22.So that is a concern. That is slightly unusual. There for drivers

:10:23. > :10:32.out there on a medium tyre. Everybody out there apart from them

:10:33. > :10:42.

:10:42. > :10:47.quite as quick as we saw yesterday afternoon yet. What are you seeing

:10:47. > :10:53.at Red Bull? It is interesting to see how much

:10:53. > :10:59.work the teams are still having to do. Gary was observing how Red Bull

:10:59. > :11:09.were playing around with the exhaust. They were trying to see how

:11:09. > :11:09.

:11:09. > :11:14.it would be affected. Looking at the pictures, they have heard all sorts

:11:14. > :11:20.of cameras taking pictures of this. There is still so much work to do

:11:20. > :11:26.with, what, only another 50 minutes until qualifying.

:11:26. > :11:31.Red Bull, we always know how hard they work. People can sometimes

:11:31. > :11:38.think they did -- design the fastest cars and that is that. But they are

:11:38. > :11:46.always trying to improve. These cars will have been worked on

:11:46. > :11:52.last night. They are trying to make sense of some questions.

:11:52. > :12:01.Joining us now from the Ferrari pit wall is the principal. Lovely to

:12:01. > :12:09.have you with us. Good morning to all of you. A bit of blue sky for

:12:09. > :12:12.you today. Not enough! But we can improve.

:12:13. > :12:16.Felipe Massa had the accident yesterday. Tell us the extent of

:12:16. > :12:25.damage done to the car and how late they were like -- working last night

:12:25. > :12:29.to get it ready. The suspension was not too bad in

:12:29. > :12:37.terms of damages. But it was unfortunate because they could not

:12:38. > :12:46.finish. We need to prepare for today. It is not easy but the

:12:46. > :12:50.conditions will be different. I am here with Gary Anderson. He is

:12:50. > :12:55.always impressed by the way you always run these back-to-back tests

:12:55. > :13:03.on the Friday with both Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso. Similarly that

:13:04. > :13:10.has cost you in terms of your preparation? -- presumably.

:13:10. > :13:14.It will not be so relevant, unfortunately.

:13:14. > :13:19.The front wing you were running yesterday with Fernando, are you

:13:19. > :13:25.going to be running that this weekend? I think that we need to

:13:25. > :13:31.have some more management of that. Are you going to do the mileage this

:13:31. > :13:37.morning? I think we need to concentrate on this performance.

:13:37. > :13:41.Finally, this has been a great track over the years. You're one of the

:13:41. > :13:48.few teams based in the UK, but you seem to have an amazing relationship

:13:48. > :13:57.with Silverstone. What are your chances this weekend? The atmosphere

:13:57. > :14:03.is always great. I have been told that so many people love us in this

:14:03. > :14:11.country. It is amazing. We have had good experiences in the past. We

:14:11. > :14:19.have quick cars, teams qualifying. We will try to do our best.

:14:19. > :14:23.Thank you very much. We hope the day goes well. Ferrari, 16 wins in the

:14:23. > :14:32.British Grand Prix over the years. That is the most, taking into

:14:32. > :14:39.account the different tracks. Here at Silverstone, interestingly,

:14:39. > :14:49.Ferrari and McLaren are tied on wins with 12 apiece. The red cars have

:14:49. > :14:51.

:14:51. > :14:55.had such a great run. The enthusiasm from the crowds here is always

:14:55. > :14:57.tremendous. It always has been. There were 80,000 people here

:14:58. > :15:02.yesterday, which is remarkable considering the weather was not

:15:02. > :15:12.fantastic. But it is testament to the enthusiasm there is for Formula

:15:12. > :15:14.

:15:14. > :15:22.One in this country. Fantastic to see that support for Silverstone,

:15:23. > :15:32.fantastic. Just watching Fernando Alonso. TEAM RADIO: Nico Rosberg has

:15:33. > :15:35.

:15:35. > :15:39.taken 50. That is interesting, but is interesting? They would usually

:15:39. > :15:44.apply the left foot brakes. Sixth place -- six would be the normal

:15:44. > :15:47.gear and that corner is not quick enough so you need to go to another

:15:47. > :15:51.gear to get that acceleration of the corner so that steadies the car, if

:15:51. > :15:59.you have the engine driving. You can stabilise by putting the power back

:15:59. > :16:03.on. Just watching Fernando Alonso, trying to get those tyres up to

:16:04. > :16:07.temperature. That is one of the biggest problems, the fact that that

:16:08. > :16:12.does not heed the tyres up quickly enough for a one lap and that pays

:16:12. > :16:16.dividends later in the race. It is like chicane and egg, you must

:16:16. > :16:22.decide which one you want to have first. Fernando Alonso has had two

:16:22. > :16:26.wins this year but he has had if you third places on the grid but

:16:26. > :16:30.qualifying has not been the strong point. They have been to recover and

:16:31. > :16:36.get those wins but the problem is that Red Bull are qualifying well

:16:36. > :16:41.and they seem to be getting on top of looking after those tyres?

:16:41. > :16:46.with my analysis, I look at speed and pure speed over the weekend and

:16:46. > :16:55.during the race relative to that. Let us follow this. I love this

:16:55. > :17:05.camera. On Valtteri Bottas. He comes through Becketts. The just how late

:17:05. > :17:07.

:17:07. > :17:13.he can brake here. -- look just. We are into that really slow stuff,

:17:13. > :17:18.more about mechanical grip rather than downforce on the lesson as you

:17:18. > :17:24.start exonerating, that downforce has an effect? Yes but even through

:17:24. > :17:29.those slowest corners, but around 120 kilometres an hour, they still

:17:29. > :17:33.have 300 kilograms of downforce so it is really important. You can have

:17:33. > :17:37.that small change in the front wing but sometimes the driver will come

:17:37. > :17:43.back and that made more difference on slow speed rather than

:17:43. > :17:49.high-speed. Coming back to Red Bull, they seem to be getting a head

:17:49. > :17:53.around those tyres, that is the danger territory for everybody else?

:17:53. > :18:01.They have speed and qualifying and they also seem to be maintaining

:18:01. > :18:08.pace in the race at? The fastest lap time done by any over the weekend.

:18:08. > :18:13.Red Bull are just behind Mercedes but Mercedes are not the fastest car

:18:13. > :18:19.but Red Bull, performance of the race, they are not better in the

:18:19. > :18:29.race or worse, they are just doing a very good job. Tom, you are at Red

:18:29. > :18:30.

:18:30. > :18:37.Bull? I am joined by Mark Webber boss, Alan. How emotional -- his

:18:37. > :18:44.father. How emotional is his retirement? He is the only one that

:18:44. > :18:48.really matters, if he is happy, we will not worry too much and we are

:18:48. > :18:55.very pleased for him. Were you expecting him to call it a day or

:18:55. > :18:59.two go longer? He has been having a pretty good talk with his mother and

:18:59. > :19:05.father and we were aware about what he was up to for quite a while.

:19:05. > :19:11.Final thoughts ongoing back to Le Mans, does that make you nervous?

:19:11. > :19:17.thought about that a bit because experience was not great there but

:19:17. > :19:22.the car are different and they have improved and they have got better

:19:22. > :19:28.aerodynamics. It will be OK. Final thought, has he had a rough deal at

:19:28. > :19:36.Red Bull? No, they have looked after him. He has enjoyed working with

:19:36. > :19:39.Adrian and he gets on particularly well with the manager. And he will

:19:39. > :19:49.have an ongoing relationship with Red Bull, which will be lovely.

:19:49. > :19:51.

:19:51. > :19:57.Drama on the track, we have a tyre failure on Sergio Perez 's are.

:19:57. > :20:03.We're not sure why that red flag aside, unless there is debris. That

:20:03. > :20:13.might be the answer. You can see some very big chunks of rubber?

:20:13. > :20:13.

:20:13. > :20:19.shall have to see how that happened. Big chunks, there. He says that the

:20:19. > :20:26.tar exploded. This is worrying. We have seen the lamination this year

:20:26. > :20:34.and failure from Felipe Massa, but this is something different? We will

:20:34. > :20:38.have to wait and see if we can get a replay. He has done six laps.

:20:38. > :20:43.Basically, there was no reason for that to happen. He has to come back

:20:43. > :20:48.to the pits. The driver does not know, maybe it was a puncture that

:20:48. > :20:53.lead to overheating. The outer sidewall is completely gone. That is

:20:53. > :21:00.a strange one. Normally, a tyre structure will stay together and the

:21:00. > :21:08.trade will come off. It might have been a puncture that overheats the

:21:08. > :21:18.shoulder of the tire. The marshals have been quick onto the scene. They

:21:18. > :21:22.had to do that to all the debris out of the way. A huge amount of debris.

:21:22. > :21:26.Not a particularly nice place for something like that to happen. He

:21:26. > :21:31.did not go off, big-time, because it is no damage to the tire but that

:21:31. > :21:38.was a worrying moment for everybody. Coming up towards Maggots and

:21:38. > :21:42.Becketts. Mexican flags in the crowd. Support for Sergio Perez. He

:21:42. > :21:49.has done a very good job to get that car back. Just going nice and

:21:49. > :21:56.slowly. Jenny, what do you see? rear left has been completely

:21:56. > :22:00.shredded. Pieces of rubber flapping around. It is absolutely destroyed.

:22:00. > :22:05.It could well have taken out the suspension as well. As we saw last

:22:05. > :22:08.week with Lewis Hamilton. The guys will start working on this. The

:22:08. > :22:16.sporting director will have a very good look and work out what is going

:22:16. > :22:21.on. And the second in charge at Pirelli has come out. He is just

:22:21. > :22:29.looking in, trying to work out what has happened. But a very wordy and

:22:30. > :22:38.failure. Whether it is a puncture or not, we shall try to find out. --

:22:38. > :22:44.very worrying failure. We can get the replay. No, we did not see the

:22:44. > :22:50.beginning of that. That replay was turning in. The left rear tyre

:22:50. > :22:55.looked OK at that point in time but that is where it could have failed.

:22:55. > :22:59.Just that shot from behind. We can see those bits of rubber but it had

:22:59. > :23:04.already disintegrated at that point. The new bonding process on the

:23:04. > :23:09.Pirelli tyres to stop those problems we had before but this does look

:23:09. > :23:16.like something different and maybe he had picked up some debris

:23:16. > :23:20.somewhere else. Difficult to know? It is. The bonding process between

:23:20. > :23:23.the rubber compound and the top of the steelwork so it is one of those

:23:23. > :23:29.things when the surface of the tire comes off, it leaves the structure

:23:29. > :23:35.of the tire but overheating the shoulders means that the

:23:35. > :23:41.construction of the tie will brake up and coming out of cops, there is

:23:41. > :23:45.a curve and there is that serrated curve, it is possible to get your

:23:45. > :23:54.tyres cut from that. We shall have to wait and see if we can get more

:23:54. > :24:00.information. It is possible. That is a matter of concern for McLaren. We

:24:00. > :24:03.are being told this will restart in just over one minute. As the clock

:24:04. > :24:06.continues to tick away. A lot of people will be checking their tyres

:24:06. > :24:11.even more closely to make sure there is nothing to worry about in the

:24:11. > :24:18.various other teams. So, the track is clear, the marshals have done

:24:18. > :24:23.their job. Thank you for getting in touch with us. Adam says, I still

:24:23. > :24:27.expect Webber to get pole position. He loves this track. I think that is

:24:28. > :24:33.possible, certainly read all are looking quick. And he does love this

:24:33. > :24:40.track. He lives not far away near Buckingham. It is very much a second

:24:40. > :24:44.home to him. Another says, who do you think will be the best Brit this

:24:45. > :24:53.weekend? Allen said Paul, then said Lewis Hamilton, James Allen

:24:53. > :25:03.yesterday... TEAM RADIO: in terms of temperature, it is not different,

:25:03. > :25:08.quite similar. The wind is also affecting it. It has a big effect.

:25:08. > :25:12.That is interesting, the wind is having quite a big effect. Alan said

:25:12. > :25:20.that it will be Paul di Resta, this is the chequered flag. This was at

:25:20. > :25:25.the chequered flag, who would you go for? For the race? I would say Paul

:25:25. > :25:30.di Resta could do that. I have a feeling those tyres look very

:25:30. > :25:36.consistent here and Force India can take advantage. I think it might be

:25:36. > :25:39.Jenson Button, I would love to say! But I don't think it will be. The

:25:39. > :25:43.McLaren is not performing and they are lacking downforce. They know

:25:43. > :25:49.they have plenty of work to do. Dan O'Connor, another question, do the

:25:49. > :25:54.wheels have Allen 's car is do they have balanced line-up marks like

:25:54. > :25:59.aircraft? Balanced weights, the wheel is a construction but it has

:25:59. > :26:05.the tire valve and the tire pressure and temperature sensors so that

:26:05. > :26:12.throws the balance out just a little bit and we are seeing that rear

:26:12. > :26:16.floor damage. When that tire broke up, it wipes out part of the floor.

:26:16. > :26:23.The rims have that tire pressure sensor so that throws the balance

:26:23. > :26:26.out. The tyres are balanced before being put on, at Pirelli. When the

:26:26. > :26:33.accommodation goes together, it is only I'd just a little bit and they

:26:33. > :26:37.have then been rebalanced. similar to road car is but slightly

:26:38. > :26:42.more sophisticated. What does it mean in the race when they give the

:26:42. > :26:51.driver more from wing? Were so involved, it is such an expression

:26:51. > :26:54.that we can use all the time but what does that mean? -- front wing.

:26:54. > :26:59.They have downforce distributed at the front and rear and if you do not

:26:59. > :27:04.have enough aerodynamic balance, it will under steer. The car will not

:27:04. > :27:08.turn as quickly as the driver wants so by putting on more front wing, it

:27:08. > :27:12.applies more angle to the flaps at the front wing to give him more

:27:12. > :27:19.downforce and more grip. Straightforward as that. Hope that

:27:19. > :27:26.answers your question. More front wing, more grip. Mark Webber on the

:27:26. > :27:31.track, down Wellington straight. Work still going on at McLaren as

:27:31. > :27:41.they set about changing the floor. This is a huge component Alonso

:27:41. > :27:44.vital? It creates 30% of the overall downforce. There is a chance that

:27:44. > :27:49.that area is critical and it will lose some downforce but maybe there

:27:49. > :27:54.is other damage, I don't know. But if I was there, I would have said,

:27:54. > :27:58.we have this deficit, let's run with it because are only 37 minutes to

:27:58. > :28:02.go, let's get more laps and think about the entire race. Forget about

:28:02. > :28:05.overall performance and think about durability and you might learn more

:28:05. > :28:11.from this morning and having the car parked in the garage. They have to

:28:11. > :28:16.worry about the limited time. Two hours between the end of this

:28:16. > :28:21.session and the start of qualifying. Still, they need to think about

:28:21. > :28:27.that. Looking down at Mark Webber, making his way around one of his

:28:27. > :28:35.favourite tracks but the fastest time at the moment, has just been

:28:35. > :28:39.taken by Mark Webber, no surprises. He is faster than Valtteri Bottas.

:28:39. > :28:43.Perez was faster before that incident. And there goes the remains

:28:43. > :28:50.of the tire, that technician from Pirelli, that'll be analysed

:28:50. > :28:58.somewhere secret! We might see a better replay but after that last

:28:58. > :29:02.question the front wing, to quantify aerodynamics, these fast corners are

:29:02. > :29:08.about 250 kilometres an hour and these cars generate about 1300 kg of

:29:08. > :29:12.downforce at that speed and 40% and that is on the front of the car,

:29:12. > :29:16.which is 520 kilograms of front downforce but when we see someone

:29:17. > :29:21.adjusting that front wing, he will be adding about five kilograms of

:29:21. > :29:23.load onto that front wing so it is a very small number and the driver can

:29:23. > :29:29.pick up such small numbers and the balance is so critical, those

:29:29. > :29:33.numbers are tiny. Five kilograms of front downforce can turn the car

:29:33. > :29:39.from under steer into good balance. Incredible. Bernie Ecclestone making

:29:39. > :29:47.his way through the paddock. Let's get back to the pits and the McLaren

:29:47. > :29:53.Joel thing -- McLaren managing director. What is the damage?

:29:53. > :29:58.extensive to the rear of the car and he does not recall hitting any kerb

:29:58. > :30:03.or anything so all we know is we had an instantaneous deflation, no

:30:03. > :30:09.warning, no sense of problems. We are focused on repairing the car and

:30:09. > :30:12.getting back out. To be fair to Pirelli, we need more time to do

:30:12. > :30:14.those forensics and collect the rest of the tire from the circuit and

:30:14. > :30:24.pasted together. As soon as we know, we will let you know. Just

:30:24. > :30:27.

:30:27. > :30:33.unexpected. What damage was sustained? It looks fairly badly

:30:33. > :30:42.damaged, the rear floor diffuser. The boys have got a bit of work to

:30:42. > :30:46.do. Can McLaren turn it around to get out for qualifying? I hope so.

:30:46. > :30:54.There is no evidence of any damage to the gearbox at the moment.

:30:54. > :31:00.luck with the challenge. TOM CLARKSON: Something at that -- like

:31:00. > :31:05.that put a lot of load through. Hopefully if he is going slow

:31:05. > :31:12.enough, it will not do too much damage.

:31:12. > :31:17.Looking at him driving back there, you wonder how he can. The hydraulic

:31:17. > :31:21.differential pushes plates together, and you can adjust the

:31:21. > :31:26.pressure on the plates to make it lock more or not less. They have a

:31:26. > :31:31.Button on the steering wheel. You can just press the Button and it

:31:31. > :31:34.makes a differential. I don't see any problem with the gearbox. It

:31:34. > :31:44.should be OK. Sebastian Vettel comes through

:31:44. > :31:45.

:31:45. > :31:50.Copse. Daniel Ricciardo, some people think he is going to be his

:31:50. > :31:54.replacement. Lewis Hamilton is sitting out of the car but with

:31:55. > :31:59.crash helmet on. He is ready to get back out. They are making some major

:31:59. > :32:05.changes, or he would be back in the car. He was not happy with the

:32:05. > :32:11.balance of it yesterday. I wonder if they are making it changes. Di Resta

:32:12. > :32:21.is currently third. It is still early stages. Erez is still fifth

:32:22. > :32:36.

:32:36. > :32:41.Hulkenberg. Hamilton has only done a bit and is in 18th. Here we are

:32:41. > :32:50.watching Daniel Ricciardo. He is on another good lap at the moment. He

:32:50. > :32:57.is coming down Hangar Straight. He caught him pretty quickly, which

:32:57. > :33:00.would have been a wake-up call. But he dealt with it quickly. He had a

:33:00. > :33:06.good early sector. Let's see if this is going to be an improvement for

:33:06. > :33:10.him. He stays second, but it is a slightly better luck. Jean-Eric

:33:10. > :33:14.Vergne is also on track, and not surprisingly, we are keeping a close

:33:14. > :33:21.eye on these two at the moment. We know they are both under

:33:21. > :33:26.consideration. It is interesting. Up until this race, all of the doors

:33:26. > :33:31.were shut. Whenever Mark Webber decided to go on the sports cars,

:33:31. > :33:36.that opened a door. It is going to be interesting to see who is going

:33:36. > :33:46.to pick the ball up, who is going to give something. Jean-Eric Vergne has

:33:46. > :33:47.

:33:47. > :33:50.just gone second furthest -- fastest. They are all potentially

:33:50. > :33:58.drivers for Red Bull. It is going to be interesting to see who can pick

:33:58. > :34:08.it up. Let's look at a long low here. What has he been up to? --

:34:08. > :34:09.

:34:09. > :34:17.Fernando Alonso. He needs a bit more front wing. A few more kilos on the

:34:17. > :34:22.front end! Lewis Hamilton is complaining about the opposite.

:34:22. > :34:26.Maybe the wind is having an effect here. It is going to make life more

:34:27. > :34:36.difficult. A couple more questions. Alex says, should the teams be

:34:37. > :34:39.

:34:40. > :34:46.worried about the tyres when they delaminate? I think we have to wait

:34:46. > :34:50.and see. My biggest worry about the problems we have had with the tyres

:34:50. > :34:56.is that it is not consistent enough to be, in my book, a manufacturing

:34:56. > :35:01.problem. It is more like a quality control problem. It is a bit random.

:35:01. > :35:05.Again, if this, for any reason, was the same problem, again, there have

:35:05. > :35:10.been races before with this problem, but suddenly it pops up

:35:10. > :35:17.with one tyre. If I was running a team, I would be trying to work some

:35:17. > :35:23.way of getting my own analysis done on the tyres. In the Mercedes pit,

:35:23. > :35:27.still not a lot of action. Rosberg is in his car ready to go. He has

:35:27. > :35:30.had three pole positions this year. The battle in qualifying between

:35:30. > :35:38.himself and Lewis Hamilton has been pretty intense. Hamilton still has

:35:38. > :35:43.the edge. We have had seven events so far, and Hamilton is up 4-3. But

:35:43. > :35:50.it is Rosberg who has had the most pole positions. Hamilton has had

:35:50. > :35:55.just one. It is a great, great rivalry that we are witnessing. We

:35:55. > :36:01.are just watching Daniel Ricciardo again. He is now back down into

:36:01. > :36:11.third place. Fourth, rather. Di Resta has gone third. Another good

:36:11. > :36:16.

:36:16. > :36:26.luck by Paul di Resta. -- another good lap. Now, picking up the

:36:26. > :36:27.

:36:27. > :36:32.throttle. Quite an early gear change just to keel. I was going to say

:36:32. > :36:36.that it is an interesting tussle between them. Both Daniel Ricardo

:36:36. > :36:43.and Jean-Eric Vergne come up through Formula three. They note the circuit

:36:43. > :36:50.pretty well. -- they know. This track can be used in many layouts.

:36:50. > :36:56.It will give them both the added confidence. They both now have a lot

:36:56. > :37:02.of F1 milage. Ricciardo has been doing it a bit longer. The time is

:37:03. > :37:06.right to make a choice between them. If I was choosing, up until about

:37:06. > :37:12.two races ago, if I was choosing one of them, it would have to be a flick

:37:12. > :37:15.of a coin but it would go towards Ricciardo. In the last couple of

:37:15. > :37:21.races, it looks like Jean-Eric Vergne has come on. He seems to have

:37:21. > :37:25.been going forward. But the qualifying in the last couple of

:37:25. > :37:29.races has been affected by rain a bit, and then we have had Monaco,

:37:29. > :37:35.which is always exceptional. Can you read the races in the same way as

:37:35. > :37:40.the others? If there is a potential of picking something up and running

:37:40. > :37:47.with it, it is the driver that picks it up that you want. They are close

:37:47. > :37:57.enough to say that the pure speed will come. But, like Bottas in

:37:57. > :37:59.

:37:59. > :38:02.Montreal, rain came and he qualified in third.

:38:02. > :38:08.Person-macro has had a disappointing run recently. At the start of the

:38:08. > :38:13.season he was consistent. He is still an enigma. We are still

:38:13. > :38:16.waiting to see the consistent run of performances by dealing with

:38:16. > :38:22.everything that has been thrown at him. There's no denying he has pace

:38:22. > :38:29.on his day. At the moment, he is 11th fastest. He has set a personal

:38:29. > :38:32.best in the first sector. That is about half a second off the best we

:38:32. > :38:42.have seen in that first sector. I wonder what the second sector is

:38:42. > :38:44.

:38:44. > :38:50.going to look like. 38.2 he has done here. The best was Mark Webber.

:38:50. > :38:57.If you look at the back of the Lotus, there is no periscope. You

:38:57. > :39:07.have got this horseshoe wing. They have got a very low bodywork on the

:39:07. > :39:07.

:39:07. > :39:12.cards. -- on the cars. It is too different specifications for the

:39:13. > :39:22.cars. We were talking about Lotus. Tom,

:39:23. > :39:23.

:39:23. > :39:27.you are down at the pit garage. We have got a really graphic

:39:27. > :39:33.illustration of how the DIS works today. On Kimi Raikkonen 's car, if

:39:33. > :39:43.you look at the airbox, either side, there are some deals. On this car,

:39:43. > :39:43.

:39:43. > :39:47.the deals are open today. -- deals. On Rome and grow John 's car, you

:39:47. > :39:52.can see that they are closed. That signifies that he is running

:39:52. > :39:58.different bodywork on his car. He is not going to be using the double

:39:58. > :40:04.system. Lovely to have that comparison

:40:04. > :40:12.directly there. Very clear that one is running with and one without. As

:40:12. > :40:17.a technical director, Gary, what is the thinking there?

:40:17. > :40:23.You are trying to pack as much as you can into a given weekend. If you

:40:23. > :40:32.get the running and the session times in you had as much information

:40:32. > :40:40.up -- if you get the running and the session times in, you have as much

:40:40. > :40:47.information as you can. You are not any loud -- allowed any testing. You

:40:47. > :40:56.have to get as much out of it as you can. Unless you are Mercedes!

:40:56. > :41:01.just let that in there. No damage done there. Interesting

:41:01. > :41:06.that a lot of new rules have been announced for next year. In season

:41:06. > :41:09.testing has become a part of Formula One again. You wonder whether all of

:41:09. > :41:13.the controversy about the Mercedes test and Pirelli complaining they

:41:13. > :41:21.were not allowed to run their tyres anywhere, at least it seems to have

:41:21. > :41:27.led to a bit more logic in terms of testing for next year.

:41:27. > :41:34.It is ideal for these teams. They are trying to make things work.

:41:34. > :41:37.Those parts, which cost a lot of money, are ending up in the bin. If

:41:37. > :41:42.you can plan your development, the cars can step forward. That is the

:41:42. > :41:45.important thing. For the moment we are focused on

:41:45. > :41:51.what is happening here at Silverstone. Hamilton has gone

:41:51. > :41:55.quickest while we have been chatting. He is only a fraction

:41:55. > :42:02.faster than Webber. None the less, it is faster. That is going to boost

:42:02. > :42:12.his confidence. A big slider therefrom matter. -- a big slide

:42:12. > :42:18.

:42:18. > :42:24.It changes so much. Felipe Massa is on the medium tyre. I am not sure

:42:24. > :42:31.what he is up to. His spirits are OK but he does not look like being

:42:31. > :42:41.fastest of all. -- his splits. Might have expected something bigger than

:42:41. > :42:44.

:42:44. > :42:48.that. Sometimes the Ferrari does struggle to get temperature. It

:42:49. > :42:52.depends on the balance of the car. If you have a car that wants some

:42:53. > :43:01.traction, a medium tyre will help. With under steer, it will make it

:43:02. > :43:11.understeer more. Let's watch this from this camera.

:43:12. > :43:14.

:43:14. > :43:21.He goes through Abbey. Let's look at the oversteer from Felipe Massa.

:43:21. > :43:26.That was a big armful in a Formula One car.

:43:26. > :43:31.He made a mistake on the way in. It was not a balance problem, it was a

:43:31. > :43:36.Felipe Massa problem inflicted by the wind. When he had his crash

:43:36. > :43:40.yesterday, he was on a prototype Pirelli tyre. He said afterwards

:43:41. > :43:45.that it was a hard tyre and basically he had not got enough

:43:45. > :43:50.temperature into it. It caught him out. The prototype is not being used

:43:50. > :44:00.today and will not be used for the rest of the weekend.

:44:00. > :44:10.An extra set of tyres could be taken and voted off. -- taken and voted

:44:10. > :44:12.

:44:12. > :44:22.He is still on the hard compound tyre. He is only relatively new set

:44:22. > :44:24.

:44:25. > :44:29.of compound tyre. -- on a relatively new set. He is down on Webber in the

:44:29. > :44:34.middle sector. But this final sector, let's just see. The Mercedes

:44:34. > :44:39.is usually pretty good in the tight stuff will stop across the line, and

:44:39. > :44:49.no, not quicker than Hamilton, but on a par with him. Hamilton and

:44:49. > :44:56.

:44:56. > :45:01.Rosberg, 124 -- both for Mercedes. This is something that we will see,

:45:01. > :45:11.watching Fernando Alonso here, the fact here is that you get lap times

:45:11. > :45:13.

:45:13. > :45:17.that are separated by thousands of a second. At any point, between

:45:17. > :45:22.Hamilton and Rosberg, who could have been three tenths of a second but

:45:22. > :45:27.when you add that up, one man is better in one section and one is

:45:27. > :45:31.better in another. What we see with these tyres, the harder tyres, it

:45:31. > :45:36.does not seem to have any degradation. Looking at those long

:45:36. > :45:41.runs yesterday, they looked very stable and those medium tyres, maybe

:45:41. > :45:46.a fraction but nothing much. I at this race as a potential 1-stop for

:45:46. > :45:51.teams like Force India and two stops for the man who will win this race.

:45:51. > :45:57.That is a great camera position. Inside the front wheel. You can see

:45:57. > :46:02.that carbon fibre shield. Stopping the airflow. Trying to make that

:46:02. > :46:06.smoother on the inside. And on the top, that is eating up the error

:46:07. > :46:14.coming from the front wing and trying to redirect it just to make

:46:14. > :46:20.it more acceptable to the side pockets. Maldonado. At big slide.

:46:21. > :46:27.And he ends up running out of road. That was a lovely shot, for a while!

:46:28. > :46:33.He just needs more steering lock! Not quite enough! Dramatic stuff

:46:33. > :46:41.from Pastor Maldonado. As Williams enjoyed their 600th Grand Prix

:46:41. > :46:45.celebrations. They have the combination. Paul di Resta making

:46:45. > :46:51.that same error. Whether it is to do with the wind direction by the does

:46:51. > :46:54.seem to reflect quite a few people. I would pitted down to wind. More

:46:54. > :47:04.steering lock and the wider track and less speed. That is the easiest

:47:04. > :47:07.

:47:07. > :47:10.thing to come by. More questions. If they car has a puncture, have the

:47:10. > :47:19.team effectively lost one complete set of tyres? Know, if you have a

:47:19. > :47:24.puncture, and it is recognised as a puncture, the FIA will allow you to

:47:24. > :47:31.replace that one tire with something from the Friday practice session of

:47:31. > :47:35.the same age. So you can replace it, yes. Hamilton has just set the

:47:35. > :47:38.fastest middle sector time of anybody. He is on those harder

:47:38. > :47:44.compound tyres. He has gone for another quick lap. While Webber has

:47:44. > :47:49.gone quicker but this could be faster and again. Very even between

:47:49. > :47:53.Red Bull and Mercedes. Hamilton takes three tenths out of the Red

:47:53. > :47:56.Bull. That was a good lap from Lewis Hamilton and it shows that Mercedes

:47:56. > :48:04.could be in the battle for pole position. And still on those harder

:48:04. > :48:08.tyres. It is staying very stable. To go back to that puncture, the battle

:48:08. > :48:12.drives through the gravel trap and gets a puncture, no, they will not

:48:12. > :48:20.replace the tire but if it is genuinely due to debris on the

:48:20. > :48:28.track, yes. Rosberg going into that second place. What is Sebastian

:48:28. > :48:30.Vettel doing? Not a huge amount at the moment. He has done 14 laps

:48:30. > :48:40.presumably he is concentrating on race running. His times have not

:48:40. > :48:41.

:48:41. > :48:45.been that quick. He has sorted it out without any major consequences.

:48:45. > :48:52.Ferrari are about half of the second of, perhaps more, on the ultimate

:48:52. > :48:57.pace. Another question. As an engineer, do you feel that the teams

:48:57. > :49:03.prefer the new circuit layout at Silverstone or the older one?

:49:03. > :49:08.don't think there is any real difference. Then you start finish

:49:08. > :49:18.line is quite demanding so it is pretty good. -- the new start -

:49:18. > :49:24.finish line. The old pets at Silverstone, this new place is

:49:24. > :49:28.fantastic but it is not Silverstone. The character has -- the character

:49:28. > :49:33.of this place has changed with this new wing but it will be gradually

:49:33. > :49:36.built up as more investment comes and once that comes, it will perhaps

:49:36. > :49:41.make more of the centre of this whole new facility and it will

:49:41. > :49:45.become the hub of the circuit. We could see Hulkenberg making a

:49:45. > :49:55.similar error, so it is really affecting a lot of people. Final

:49:55. > :49:57.

:49:57. > :50:03.question... How much shaking and vibration does go on in the car? How

:50:03. > :50:07.smooth is the right? If you compare that to most people on road cars,

:50:07. > :50:13.perhaps a stiff sports car, but they vibration in Formula one is

:50:13. > :50:16.different? Yes, it is a strange thing because when you talk about

:50:16. > :50:19.high-performance sports cars on the road, they have low profile tyres

:50:19. > :50:26.and that is where you get most of the vibration and feedback. These

:50:26. > :50:31.are high-profile so they absorb a lot that impact. They take the

:50:31. > :50:35.high-speed vibration out of that but in retrospect, that affects the car.

:50:35. > :50:43.What the driver feels is the steering wheel, if the whalers out

:50:43. > :50:48.of balance, it will vibrate. And he can feel every little tremble,

:50:48. > :50:53.everything that is running. If it is running smoothly, that is when those

:50:53. > :51:00.big vibrations start. If you are leading with five laps, every little

:51:00. > :51:06.change. But you will feel circuit vibrations but nothing really from

:51:06. > :51:10.the car itself. Kimi Raikkonen on the circuit. He has just done a

:51:10. > :51:17.Ursula Best in the first sector. Jenny, what are the chances of

:51:17. > :51:21.Sergio Perez getting back out? Pretty good, helmet is on, and he is

:51:21. > :51:26.in the car. The team have done an amazing job, they have replaced the

:51:26. > :51:32.floor, the rear bodywork and the rear wing. They have got it's that

:51:33. > :51:40.they have welded onto the car. It is a really good turnaround from

:51:40. > :51:44.McLaren and they will hope to get him out for the last few minutes.

:51:44. > :51:50.Back on board with Kimi Raikkonen. Pretty good lap, this, but not quite

:51:50. > :51:54.on the pace of Mercedes. It will be up there with Red Bull and Ferrari.

:51:54. > :52:00.He is on the medium compound tyres and they set their times on the

:52:00. > :52:10.harder tyre. Only six days. That is disappointing, bearing in mind he is

:52:10. > :52:12.

:52:12. > :52:16.on the softer rivers compound tyres? -- softer of those compound tyres.

:52:16. > :52:20.They are the hardest of the Pirelli tyres so that makes it just that

:52:20. > :52:25.little bit more difficult. Yes, certainly Lotus are looking at those

:52:25. > :52:30.tyre choices from Pirelli. Which compound. They will be for the

:52:30. > :52:34.softer tyres to come along and Hungary they feel aggrieved because

:52:34. > :52:38.Pirelli have chosen to go for the harder compound than they were

:52:38. > :52:44.hoping for. But they were very quick in Hungary last year so that might

:52:44. > :52:54.have an effect. Currently, Hamilton is fastest. Ahead of his team-mate,

:52:54. > :52:55.

:52:55. > :53:05.Rosberg. We expect to see some more out others medium tyres in a few

:53:05. > :53:14.

:53:14. > :53:19.moments. -- on those medium tyres. Barton is in 13th place. -- autumn.

:53:19. > :53:24.-- Jenson Button. The team director for McLaren keeping an eye on

:53:24. > :53:28.things. He has been doing work on the similar. Hopefully that will

:53:28. > :53:35.help McLaren move further. Charles Pic is the fastest of the younger

:53:35. > :53:45.teams. Driving for Caterham. Sebastian Vettel, done in 20th

:53:45. > :53:49.

:53:49. > :53:56.place, he has not been looking at the lap times at all. Chilton is

:53:56. > :54:01.21st. This will change quite a lot in the remaining 11 minutes of the

:54:01. > :54:06.session? This is the time to take the view will dine. They will not go

:54:06. > :54:11.to low fuel and they will go down to about 20 or 30 kilograms, put on

:54:11. > :54:14.those medium tyres and go for one lap to similar qualifying just to

:54:14. > :54:18.understand the car and how those tyres work in those conditions.

:54:18. > :54:23.Early important for qualifying. is why you talk about fuel in

:54:24. > :54:27.kilograms not litres? Litres and gallons, if you have a quantity of

:54:28. > :54:33.fuel, temperature makes a few will get bigger and smaller so if you

:54:33. > :54:38.have fuel at 10 degrees, and you think you have 50 litres, at 25

:54:38. > :54:44.degrees you will think it is 51. It is not as accurate. Stays the same.

:54:44. > :54:54.The difference is, one litre of fuel is about not with 75 kilograms. It

:54:54. > :54:59.

:54:59. > :55:04.is the best reference. -- three quarters of a kilogram. Like Jenson

:55:04. > :55:08.Button, Felipe Massa has never been on the podium and he has never led

:55:08. > :55:13.any lap at Silverstone. Slightly odd statistics that Silverstone throws

:55:13. > :55:21.up some of these top drivers. Fernando Alonso has done well in the

:55:21. > :55:26.past. He had a couple of wins and Mark Webber also. But the all-time

:55:26. > :55:31.record setter, Jim Clark and Alain Prost, five wins each in the British

:55:31. > :55:36.Grand Prix. Jim Clark had an amazing run in the 60s when he won them

:55:36. > :55:42.back-to-back. Incredible. It was as tough to win races back then as it

:55:42. > :55:47.is now. It was just as tough. challenge was just as much. We can

:55:47. > :55:57.see Perez coming out. All those harder tyres. He has not gone for

:55:57. > :56:01.

:56:01. > :56:05.the medium compound. Let us see if we can get a chance to watch this.

:56:05. > :56:09.That seems to work pretty well and when it comes to this art itself,

:56:09. > :56:14.they will be on a level piece of tarmac running towards the first

:56:14. > :56:19.corner. It is a very fast first corner, you really get a chance to

:56:19. > :56:24.carry some speed in to turn on one. Doing these practice tracks, it's

:56:24. > :56:26.not just about the good start, it is about making sure you go through the

:56:27. > :56:30.procedures correctly and the engineers have got everything

:56:30. > :56:37.working. It is more about making sure the system works than the

:56:37. > :56:43.actual times. 8.5 minutes left. Let's get down to the pets with

:56:43. > :56:47.Tom... You have to feel sorry for Felipe Massa 's mechanics because

:56:47. > :56:50.last night was a late-night changing the front end and they are now

:56:50. > :56:54.working on the rear end, changing the engine of this Ferrari.

:56:54. > :56:59.According to the team, it is precautionary. They would not

:56:59. > :57:09.elaborate. It is busy and he will not be out before the end of the

:57:09. > :57:11.

:57:11. > :57:21.session. Jenny? The Mercedes garage have been doing quite a lot to the

:57:21. > :57:23.

:57:23. > :57:27.front end. There are some inlets on the front side, there. Hooked up

:57:28. > :57:30.with some carbon fibre and on the other side, not hooked up. That is

:57:30. > :57:40.an interesting difference. And they have also been working on the front

:57:40. > :57:42.

:57:42. > :57:46.suspension, changing some settings. Lewis Hamilton is not happy. They

:57:46. > :57:50.connect up to the leading edge of the floor, the low pressure is

:57:50. > :57:56.sucking the air through, like a vacuum cleaner. And that little

:57:56. > :58:00.strip of titanium across the bottom makes it legal. You cannot have any

:58:00. > :58:04.surface without a vertical surface. That makes everything legal. It will

:58:05. > :58:12.not change performance, but it would be illegal if you try to run the car

:58:12. > :58:18.with that and if you have gone over a kerb and it is broken, so be it.

:58:18. > :58:22.Hamilton is fastest. Into the final stages of morning practice at

:58:22. > :58:26.Silverstone in the build-up to the qualifying. I wonder whether Lewis

:58:26. > :58:29.Hamilton will be able to challenge for pole position? Mercedes have

:58:29. > :58:33.done this on plenty of occasions this year. Only Red Bull and

:58:33. > :58:39.Mercedes have taken pole position this year, no other team has had a

:58:39. > :58:43.look in. Ferrari have not been as fast, war Lotus. It looks like

:58:44. > :58:48.another Mercedes versus Red Bull battle for pole position and we have

:58:48. > :58:55.to go back to the thousand and seven four Lewis Hamilton 's first race at

:58:55. > :59:01.Silverstone in a Formula one and that was it last time a British

:59:01. > :59:06.driver had pole position here. He had a brilliant win in the wet the

:59:06. > :59:12.following season. But his only pole position here was his very first

:59:12. > :59:20.year in 2007. Which cars are on medium tyres? Most of them?

:59:20. > :59:24.Everybody, really. Nico Rosberg is still in the pits. Adrian Sutil,

:59:24. > :59:33.still on those harder tyres. Five minutes to go. This is shootout

:59:33. > :59:41.time. Maldonado, 33.4. Maybe the next lap will be quicker. That is

:59:41. > :59:47.his best lap so far. We are not on board with Hulkenberg. He did 34.5.

:59:48. > :59:55.That was earlier on the harder tyres. We will just keep an eye and

:59:55. > :59:59.see what he does on this lap. I am sure this will be quite flat-out.

:59:59. > :00:05.Will anybody improve massively? Daniel Ricciardo is on a slightly

:00:05. > :00:10.outer lap and he did earlier on. Paul di Resta, he could be looking

:00:10. > :00:15.at a slight improvement. Valtteri Bottas crosses the line, that is a

:00:15. > :00:19.slight improvement. Sebastian Vettel suddenly beginning to go quickly.

:00:19. > :00:29.Fernando Alonso... He is on medium tyres. Relatively quick middle

:00:29. > :00:33.

:00:33. > :00:40.sector. Certainly not the quickest. That will have cost a 10th or so, I

:00:41. > :00:47.would have thought. That lap was a fraction slower than he achieved on

:00:47. > :00:50.the hard tyres earlier. They have this working range area.

:00:50. > :00:57.Before it was the supersoft and medium that would work on high

:00:57. > :01:07.temperatures. They change the supersoft, but the medium still once

:01:07. > :01:17.to work on a high temperature. -- still wants to work. Perez has been.

:01:17. > :01:25.-- has been off. I think this is in the Becketts area. He is having a

:01:25. > :01:30.troubled time. He was only quick lap. -- on a quick lap.

:01:30. > :01:37.He went out on a hard tyre and made a mistake. We have not seen it yet

:01:37. > :01:43.but we will get a replay. Here we It is that Becketts section. It is

:01:43. > :01:47.what we have seen a lot. He ran out of road completely. He did not make

:01:47. > :01:51.any contact with the barrier, thankfully.

:01:51. > :01:57.Once you turn to the right for the last part of the corner, it makes a

:01:57. > :02:02.big difference. Because he had his spin, several had to back off,

:02:02. > :02:12.including Webber, who was fastest in the first sector out of everybody,

:02:12. > :02:13.

:02:13. > :02:16.and Vettel, who had been very quick in the first sector. Webber I think

:02:16. > :02:26.potentially had a better lap there. He had to back off because of Perez

:02:26. > :02:28.

:02:28. > :02:34.going off. Grosjean is also on a lap. He is currently 17th. Here we

:02:34. > :02:38.are, riding with the Frenchman. He has got to prove himself in the

:02:38. > :02:45.remaining part of this year. That has got to be his target. He does

:02:45. > :02:53.improve his time. That is on the softer of the two compoundss of

:02:54. > :03:03.tyre. They have got this hydraulic

:03:03. > :03:08.suspension system. It allows the car to be more compliant. It moves the

:03:08. > :03:14.front load of the car to the rear. It gets a drag reduction, and making

:03:14. > :03:18.the car low at the rear is better for that.

:03:18. > :03:27.Rosberg gained about half a second there from the time he did early on

:03:27. > :03:30.the medium compound tyre. That is about right. Hamilton is

:03:30. > :03:35.going to be the interesting one. They are the front running, quick

:03:35. > :03:45.cars. We are just finishing the lap here

:03:45. > :03:50.with Ricciardo. Let's see how this changes. 32.5, so he is a 10th

:03:50. > :03:54.slower on the tyres than he was. Lewis has backed off, mid-sector.

:03:54. > :04:04.Let's have a look at what has happened. He was quick in the first

:04:04. > :04:08.sector. Then something happened. Oh, now, that is a strange one. What

:04:08. > :04:18.a strange oversteer, mid-corner. He didn't seem to be doing anything

:04:18. > :04:20.

:04:21. > :04:26.odd. Well, very mysterious. He backed off on that lap. I wonder

:04:26. > :04:33.whether he is going to be able to get another lap. His team-mate now.

:04:33. > :04:40.As you can see, he's a couple of tenthss up on the time Hamilton set

:04:40. > :04:50.earlier. It is a long lap. 3.6 miles, the second longest in Formula

:04:50. > :04:54.One. But it is a high-speed one. Rosberg has been underrated for a

:04:54. > :04:59.long while. He is up there with the top guys in this Championship at the

:05:00. > :05:09.moment. No doubt about that. His performances this year have been

:05:09. > :05:13.outstanding. Perez, by the way, is back in the McLaren pit and is not

:05:13. > :05:21.going to be taking any further part in this session. It is a difficult

:05:21. > :05:24.way for him to go into qualifying. Let's watch the end of the lap. Just

:05:24. > :05:34.a little correction therefrom Rosberg. Could be a good lap. He

:05:34. > :05:42.

:05:42. > :05:49.goes fastest. 1: 31.48. I think that is about what the time

:05:49. > :05:59.and advantage will be. Hamilton is doing his second flying

:05:59. > :05:59.

:05:59. > :06:06.lap on the medium tyre. Again, they are very evenly matched. Not much to

:06:06. > :06:14.choose between them. Vettel, on his lap. This is in the ballpark. Not

:06:14. > :06:18.quite there, though. Six tenths down on the Mercedes. Mercedes had got

:06:18. > :06:23.the edge and we could be on for another duel between Lewis Hamilton

:06:23. > :06:27.and his team-mate for opposition. But let's see. Red Bull might be

:06:27. > :06:36.running more fuel at this stage. We have seen that at several points

:06:36. > :06:41.this year. There is Sergio Perez. It has been a difficult session for

:06:41. > :06:49.him. He has completed just nine laps in this session compared to the

:06:49. > :06:57.18-20 laps, maybe even 22, of some of his rivals. Bottas 25 laps. I

:06:57. > :07:00.think that it is the most of anybody. Mercedes, you would think

:07:00. > :07:06.they would be looking happier than that. They are all a bit glum at the

:07:06. > :07:13.moment. I don't think Lewis is happy. He

:07:13. > :07:20.just missed the apex. That is the area he is struggling in. He is not,

:07:20. > :07:27.the ball with the breaking of the cars. Every corner is a problem. --

:07:27. > :07:32.he is not comfortable. They have got a couple of hours to make the final

:07:32. > :07:36.changes to the cars. The changes are applying to the race as well as

:07:36. > :07:40.qualifying. Once the car appears for qualifying, then how it is set-up is

:07:40. > :07:49.basically how it has to be set up for the race.

:07:49. > :07:56.It looks like they have kept the spear. -- the speed. I assume the

:07:56. > :08:01.cars are still quick. Yesterday, the times were not bad.

:08:01. > :08:05.Ross Brawn made the point yesterday that in Malaysia, they had a quick

:08:05. > :08:08.car and they never got to the point where the tyres, as he put it,

:08:08. > :08:13.reached the cliff and were able to sustain good performance. They were

:08:13. > :08:17.battling for the podium, Hamilton and Rosberg. If they reach that

:08:17. > :08:20.level, they are not going beyond the practical effect of the tyres and

:08:20. > :08:30.they have got it good chance in the race. Let's run through the

:08:30. > :08:45.

:08:45. > :08:55.positions. It is Mercedes in one and concern. He is still off the pace

:08:55. > :08:58.

:08:58. > :09:05.set by McLaren -- Rosberg in the Mercedes. Massa is done in 15th.

:09:05. > :09:11.Can we read anything into the fact that Vettel took so long to do a

:09:11. > :09:14.fast lap? Is it supreme confidence? The races where you get the points

:09:14. > :09:19.tomorrow. That is the important thing on Sunday. After today, you

:09:19. > :09:24.know the car will go quicker with less fuel. He knows the track. It is

:09:24. > :09:30.about knowing the balance of the car for the risk tomorrow.

:09:30. > :09:33.Quickly, this wind seems to be picking up. That is going to make a

:09:33. > :09:37.difference, isn't it coming qualifying?

:09:37. > :09:42.Through Becketts, there are four corners and they all different

:09:42. > :09:46.directions. It is important to go in with a controlled speed. Many people

:09:46. > :09:51.are going off will stop you have to be very careful with your speed
