:01:39. > :01:49.sports results. This is all about the music! A football commentator...

:01:49. > :02:03.

:02:03. > :02:13.Penalties! England cannot win penalty shootouts! New balls!

:02:13. > :02:14.

:02:14. > :02:24.communal grown! Following the double fault. Very, very fast cars. Very

:02:24. > :02:28.

:02:28. > :02:35.fast cars! That is the Great British signed! -- signed. There is no sound

:02:35. > :02:38.quite like it in the world! Welcome to the live coverage of the British

:02:38. > :02:43.Grand Prix from Silverstone. This is qualifying and there is plenty to

:02:43. > :02:53.talk about. Last time, three weeks ago in Canada, there was some great

:02:53. > :02:55.

:02:55. > :03:01.racing. Boy, it was good! Light side, away we go! Sebastian Vettel

:03:01. > :03:11.gets off the line very well. Mark Webber makes a very good start. --

:03:11. > :03:15.lights out. Trying to shut the door and he gets in front of him. He

:03:15. > :03:24.spins in front of the rest of the pack! Complete 360. There was

:03:24. > :03:32.contact! He brakes too late. He makes contact with Force India. My

:03:32. > :03:39.goodness! Gutierrez. 12 players. He has done more overtaking than

:03:39. > :03:46.anybody else so far today. TEAM RADIO: do what you can to gain speed

:03:46. > :03:51.without losing performance. He is losing his place as a result.

:03:51. > :03:58.right rear tyre. He did not manage to get that seated so he had to go

:03:58. > :04:04.back under. He goes down and post the quick release. Felipe Massa!

:04:04. > :04:14.He'd just gives him only one car 's with, there. Adrian Sutil, defending

:04:14. > :04:23.well. Finally gets in front of Mercedes. Fernando Alonso is unable

:04:23. > :04:28.to do likewise. OK, some contact with Red Bull. We can see the wing.

:04:28. > :04:33.He is heading to turn one. Eagles defensive on the inside. Fernando

:04:33. > :04:41.Alonso on the outside and he has moved into the podium position! Into

:04:41. > :04:46.third place! Look at the book and front wing! Stuck under his car,

:04:46. > :04:53.dragging it around the track. stopped, probably the wisest thing

:04:53. > :04:58.to do. Here we go, Fernando Alonso taking second place! And Lewis

:04:58. > :05:08.Hamilton is back down to third place. Some -- Sebastian Vettel has

:05:08. > :05:11.

:05:11. > :05:17.taken victory for red Bull. Hamilton finishes in third. That resounding

:05:17. > :05:22.victory mean Sebastian Vettel is 36 points above Fernando Alonso Lewis

:05:22. > :05:24.Hamilton is fourth in the second Red Bull of Mark Webber is in fifth

:05:24. > :05:33.place. And Red Bull are looking strong in the constructors

:05:33. > :05:38.Championship with Force India still ahead of McLaren. It's easy over the

:05:38. > :05:44.weekend with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone we have Wimbledon,

:05:44. > :05:54.Glastonbury, MotoGP and athletics why would you want to leave your

:05:54. > :06:02.sofa! In the company of David Coulthard, Eddie Jordan and trouble

:06:02. > :06:06.Le Mans 24 hour when! Round of applause for Alan! Yes, that was a

:06:06. > :06:11.fantastic achievement, we work very hard over the winter to make this

:06:11. > :06:16.happen and needed a perfect job, the car ran faultlessly from start to

:06:17. > :06:22.finish. Three victories was much nicer than two of them and it came

:06:22. > :06:26.nicer this time. Mixed emotions? There was a lot of emotion when

:06:27. > :06:32.standing on the podium, it is a fantastic situation. On the other

:06:32. > :06:38.side, with the tragic accident of Alan Summerson at the start of the

:06:38. > :06:43.race and the loss of his life, that was quite a sad moment. However, my

:06:43. > :06:50.Danish team-mate said best when he dedicated his victory and our

:06:50. > :06:53.victory towards his memory. Well done. Congratulations on your three

:06:53. > :07:01.victories and it seems like a very long time since we were racing cars

:07:01. > :07:05.back in Scotland! Not that long ago! After Canada, we also heard the sad

:07:05. > :07:08.news that Marshal Mark Robinson had been killed. After the Canadian

:07:08. > :07:16.Grand Prix. And last night the Formula one community united with

:07:16. > :07:20.all of the marshals and volunteers to hold one-minute 's silence. And

:07:20. > :07:25.they are the unsung heroes and their sport could not happen without those

:07:25. > :07:29.volunteers? Without question, they are an integral part of the sport

:07:29. > :07:37.and it could not happen. There were days, we remember them in many ways

:07:37. > :07:40.but we appreciate them so much more then what we did in the past.

:07:40. > :07:45.great thing about this is the absolute fans and this gives them a

:07:45. > :07:49.slightly better opportunity than just paying for a Seat. They can

:07:49. > :07:54.push the car when needed and actually help people. They get

:07:54. > :07:57.involved and that is the great thing about being a Marshall. There is a

:07:57. > :08:01.great trick afterwards for themselves and they can be friends.

:08:02. > :08:09.There is much more to this than just looking after the car on the track.

:08:09. > :08:14.They are also on professionals. is what I really admire. Their

:08:14. > :08:19.dedication is the same as the highly paid mechanics. We salute them and

:08:19. > :08:29.on Sunday, you can get involved with grass-roots motor sport. Held right

:08:29. > :08:54.

:08:54. > :08:59.here at Silverstone, the home of greeted with the news that after

:08:59. > :09:06.nine victories, 11 pole positions and 36 podiums, Mark Webber has

:09:06. > :09:14.decided to quit F1 to go sports car racing so Lee went to get his

:09:14. > :09:22.thoughts. Exciting news for you? timing is very good. To make this

:09:22. > :09:25.decision. I have really enjoyed my time in F1, it has been a career

:09:25. > :09:32.that I am proud of and I want to add to those memories and have some

:09:32. > :09:37.special locations but the opportunity was there to do this and

:09:37. > :09:42.as I say, the timing was right. I have known for a while, I took all

:09:42. > :09:46.of you guys had for dinner in Australia for dinner in March so I

:09:46. > :09:52.knew it was my last Australian Grand Prix. It is quite weird because I

:09:53. > :09:57.have known for quite a while but it is quite liberating. I can just

:09:57. > :10:01.obviously be even more honest with you guys! I do know how sentimental

:10:01. > :10:07.you are but when you leave Montreal and Silverstone, do you think, that

:10:07. > :10:12.is that done? Yes, I had that at Albert Park and also in Monaco. I

:10:12. > :10:15.was on the podium. Yes, there is a little bit of that going on but you

:10:16. > :10:20.must be real with yourself, you just know that when it comes to the top

:10:20. > :10:27.light sport, it is not going to be forever. I have had some tremendous

:10:27. > :10:36.opportunities and great Roberts and I could not have imagined when I

:10:36. > :10:40.left Queensland, I would have done what I did. Would a manager as good

:10:40. > :10:43.advice for whom might take your Seat? He might do, my relationship

:10:43. > :10:51.has been very good and I will continue to be involved with red or

:10:51. > :10:55.going forward. -- the team. I have a very good line-up with them and I

:10:55. > :11:04.will continue to support and do some exciting things with the brand, with

:11:05. > :11:08.athletes pushing boundaries. His car is being prepared for qualifying,

:11:08. > :11:13.and he was an accomplished driver in Formula one. Retiring at the end of

:11:13. > :11:17.the season. The right time to go? Jerry, he feels this is the right

:11:17. > :11:20.time so that makes it the right time. There has been much

:11:20. > :11:26.speculation as to when he might call time other drivers might get that

:11:26. > :11:29.opportunity. He has a great opportunity with sports car racing.

:11:29. > :11:36.He has had a great career and has come up short in the World

:11:36. > :11:43.Championship so far but there is a long way to go this season. You must

:11:43. > :11:47.always try to get -- give the sport up, don't let the sport give you up!

:11:47. > :11:56.Subtle difference but very important. Lee has the rest of the

:11:56. > :11:59.news... Mercedes and Pirelli have been given a reprimand at the

:11:59. > :12:04.tribunal in Paris. Mercedes had taken part in a Pirelli tyre test

:12:04. > :12:08.using a 2013 car with both were strivers which other teams said was

:12:08. > :12:14.against the rules. In cities have also been banned from taking part in

:12:14. > :12:18.the young driver test. We have got permission but whether or not that

:12:18. > :12:21.permission was correct, and the tribunal has said we would not have

:12:21. > :12:28.done the test if we did not have permission. Those are the important

:12:28. > :12:33.factors. Mark Webber has announced he is leaving but his team-mate has

:12:33. > :12:38.committed for another year. The travel world champion will stay

:12:38. > :12:40.until at least the end of 2015 but who will be alongside? Kimi

:12:40. > :12:47.Raikkonen is the man everyone expects to be his team-mate but he

:12:47. > :12:57.is not giving much away. I have no contract and I will shortly be

:12:57. > :12:59.

:12:59. > :13:04.talking with certain people. Like I said, if I knew, I would tell.

:13:04. > :13:07.for British drivers, Silverstone fans should have plenty to cheer

:13:07. > :13:11.about the reality might be tougher. Lewis Hamilton hopes to raise smiles

:13:11. > :13:15.today, at least. The excitement, I am looking forward to seeing how

:13:15. > :13:20.many fans turn up and I hope we have good weather for them and that we

:13:20. > :13:23.can get a very good result for them. Jenson Button hasn't a difficult few

:13:23. > :13:27.races and in Canada he said he has never been so glad to get out of his

:13:27. > :13:32.car. Karen have been working hard in the last couple of weeks to give the

:13:32. > :13:35.driver something to smile about, let alone his fans. We fight and we get

:13:35. > :13:38.the best out of the car and we can still get a result here and

:13:38. > :13:42.hopefully that will be enough for the fans. We feel we need to repay

:13:43. > :13:46.them for all of their support. Especially this year. Paul di Resta

:13:46. > :13:52.has good points and six of the seven races but a tough couple of weekends

:13:52. > :13:55.has ended his points. We were at the top of our performance and we did

:13:55. > :14:03.not quite have it in us but a massive credit to everybody involved

:14:03. > :14:05.because they are punching above their weight. We need excellence.

:14:06. > :14:09.Max Chilton is no stranger to Silverstone but says starting his

:14:10. > :14:15.first home Grand Prix is a green -- dream come true. Just to have

:14:15. > :14:24.everyone there, you are not focusing on the crowd but you catch a glimpse

:14:24. > :14:28.of the union Jack and that spurs you on. I cannot wait.Fantastic to be

:14:28. > :14:36.at the home Grand Prix. Back to those tyres, everybody is talking

:14:36. > :14:45.about that. People are in an informed place to make these

:14:45. > :14:49.decisions and that makes at the right decision. Christian, we are

:14:49. > :14:52.talking about the tyres, the penalty and you don't believe the penalty

:14:52. > :14:57.fits the crime? Well, they were found to have broken the rules and

:14:57. > :15:01.the penalty was soft at the end of the day that it is done and dealt

:15:01. > :15:05.with and we must move on. They say that they learned nothing from the

:15:05. > :15:10.test, can you believe that? Every time in Formula one, you know you

:15:10. > :15:13.learn something. Especially with drivers. That was very clear. You

:15:13. > :15:19.learn something whether it is reliability or performance but it is

:15:19. > :15:26.done, the tribunal, all the evidence was presented and we have to accept

:15:26. > :15:30.that. Mark Webber, a great companion. And a great supporter for

:15:30. > :15:36.Sebastian Vettel. You will listen? Of course, he has been a big member

:15:36. > :15:43.of this team for seven years. his victories have, with our car is

:15:43. > :15:49.and he has had 30 podiums. He has made a big contribution. We just

:15:49. > :15:56.wish in the very best of luck. us in on some insight. They will

:15:56. > :16:02.replace? I was talking to Nigel Mansell earlier! I thought you were

:16:02. > :16:08.going to say me, or David Coulthard! Nigel would be better! I will tell

:16:09. > :16:14.him that! Were not short of choice. We have some youngsters and exciting

:16:14. > :16:17.prospects. And other drivers are available. Kimi Raikkonen has been

:16:18. > :16:26.mentioned in connection with this but we want to make sure that we

:16:26. > :16:31.make the right choice. Hulkenberg? Paul di Resta? All candidates but we

:16:31. > :16:36.will look internally before looking at them. We will not get any rush.

:16:36. > :16:46.We have plenty of time. A lot of drivers want that. We are very

:16:46. > :16:47.

:16:47. > :16:49.fortunate. Thank you. It is certainly a hot seat, David.

:16:49. > :16:56.It is going to start that merry-go-round of who goes where

:16:56. > :17:04.already. It is nice to see Christian enjoying the limelight and talking

:17:04. > :17:14.about something different than the tire issues. There looking again --

:17:14. > :17:17.

:17:17. > :17:22.good again for this Championship. We have all down to Williams. In

:17:22. > :17:32.Canada, we were given the treat of Bottas coming third in qualifying. A

:17:32. > :17:43.

:17:43. > :17:53.star of the huge? We think so. Here Bottas. -- Valtteri Bottas. It is

:17:53. > :18:04.

:18:04. > :18:08.beautiful and tranquil, but I am When I found I was coming to your

:18:08. > :18:14.hometown, I thought it would be tranquil countryside. This is my

:18:15. > :18:23.idea of hell. There was some countryside on the way here. This is

:18:23. > :18:31.a local team. They are really good players. Some of them get upgraded

:18:31. > :18:41.to the National Hockey League in America.

:18:41. > :18:42.

:18:42. > :18:50.Is this all for me to wear? How can you fit so much stuff on? Easy. What

:18:50. > :18:57.are these? Gloves. Normally you can punch with them. This is the most

:18:57. > :19:07.interesting piece of kit. As the only girl on the team... You might

:19:07. > :19:12.

:19:12. > :19:22.want to borrow that as well for extra protection.

:19:22. > :19:22.

:19:22. > :19:30.Oh, my God. OK, so, in ice hockey, we use a park. It can fly up to 100

:19:30. > :19:40.mph. You have got to learn how to control it. We will do a slap shot

:19:40. > :19:48.

:19:48. > :19:52.top drivers across all sections of motorsport? It is a motorsport

:19:52. > :19:58.country. The people love it. The level of go-karting is high.

:19:58. > :20:08.Competition from a young age is a very good. It might be because of

:20:08. > :20:32.

:20:32. > :20:38.the mentality. We are quite calm in show. How nice was it to get the

:20:38. > :20:46.third position in Canada? Really cool. It was a good motivation for

:20:46. > :20:54.the team. It was a reminder why we are there. It feels good to get a

:20:54. > :21:00.good result. Did you expect more on this Sunday? Looking back, there was

:21:00. > :21:08.no way we could score points. It was great to have some good fights. I

:21:08. > :21:13.had a good one with Alonso, Sutil and Raikkonen. You know they are not

:21:13. > :21:23.going to do any see things. The racing was nice and close. -- any

:21:23. > :21:35.

:21:35. > :21:43.look good? He was good. He could score. He scored a couple of nice

:21:43. > :21:51.goals. No end to this guy but my talent, it seems. -- this guy 's

:21:51. > :21:56.talent. How dedicated do you have to be? In Abu Dhabi, I saw you out

:21:56. > :22:06.jogging in the heat. If you want to be the best, you have to give more

:22:06. > :22:17.

:22:17. > :22:27.so happy I am alive! I tell you what, she is braver than

:22:27. > :22:29.

:22:29. > :22:33.I am! A real ice queen. How are your bruises? They are still there,

:22:33. > :22:41.actually. After two weeks, I am still in pain. I thought I was

:22:41. > :22:48.better than I was. My ambition was greater than my talent. Good sport.

:22:48. > :22:54.She is the new ice queen. Now, Bottas, talking of ice kings, should

:22:54. > :22:56.we say, a star of the future. He really excelled in Canada. Not

:22:56. > :23:03.during the race, because the conditions did not suit the car, but

:23:03. > :23:13.potential, David? The reason they get to Formula One is because they

:23:13. > :23:16.have a good career in the lower formula. He has been coached by

:23:16. > :23:20.Mercedes-Benz. He has got some good advisers there. At Williams, they

:23:20. > :23:27.are having a difficult run, but nonetheless he is doing a good job.

:23:28. > :23:31.They are so calm. He made reference to that. The thing about coming to

:23:31. > :23:35.Williams at the moment, they are not expecting so much at the moment in

:23:36. > :23:39.terms of results. That gives him less pressure. He is learning so

:23:39. > :23:46.much choice. He is able to get around and see how to make this car

:23:46. > :23:51.better. When he is winning he will look back at his time at Williams

:23:52. > :24:01.and say, I learned so much. Another former Rocky that is doing

:24:01. > :24:06.to clearly well is Paul di Resta. -- former Rocky.

:24:06. > :24:11.What are your hopes going into this qualifying session? Two or three is

:24:11. > :24:17.what we need to go out and achieve. We lost a bit of speed this

:24:17. > :24:23.morning. There were some issues. We will look to try and improve. It is

:24:23. > :24:27.going to be mighty close. Toro Rosso are on top of their game. For us, it

:24:27. > :24:34.is going to take an exceptional lap. Good conditions, hopefully, and

:24:34. > :24:38.we can progress. Is there any time in the crowd for

:24:38. > :24:47.you? Nigel Mansell said he would get half a second from the people in the

:24:47. > :24:53.stands. You may say that if you do a good one. I will be out there doing

:24:53. > :24:58.what I always do, which is giving 100% to help qualify.

:24:58. > :25:04.He has certainly been giving it 100% all season. This is really what he

:25:04. > :25:08.needs, isn't it, David? As he said, the team is punching above its

:25:08. > :25:14.weight. He has got a real opportunity to be the next man to

:25:14. > :25:24.step into what are established, winning teams. If CM pressing you?

:25:24. > :25:27.

:25:27. > :25:32.Hugely. -- is he impressing you?To stay where he is was the best

:25:32. > :25:36.decision. He can now look at where this team is able to go. If it can

:25:36. > :25:46.go to the levels he expects it to go, he is in the perfect condition.

:25:46. > :25:47.

:25:47. > :25:57.He could be in line for the... he be top Brit? Are unlikely, with

:25:57. > :25:59.

:25:59. > :26:09.It has been 50 years since Jim Clark took his first Silverstone Grand

:26:09. > :26:12.

:26:12. > :26:16.Prix victory. Recently, David got to racing books. They focus on the

:26:17. > :26:21.heroes of my father 's childhood. Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, two of

:26:21. > :26:25.the Scottish legends. My father had an autograph of Jim. What we have

:26:25. > :26:35.here is the car that more than any other cemented the legend that was

:26:35. > :26:46.

:26:46. > :26:49.looking after three cars. Mechanics covered the whole of the car. They

:26:49. > :26:56.had to do practically everything. He worked all night at all the

:26:56. > :27:06.circuits. You were condition that you had to work. -- you were

:27:06. > :27:06.

:27:06. > :27:11.conditioned. It was revolutionary. In its day, it was head and

:27:11. > :27:16.shoulders above the opposition. There had not been a car built like

:27:16. > :27:20.that before. Through the history of Formula One,

:27:20. > :27:25.there have always been cars that were game changes. This was one of

:27:26. > :27:33.those. Prior to this, cars were made out of tubal frame. By using

:27:33. > :27:36.aluminium, and putting the fuel cells on either side of the driver,

:27:36. > :27:46.it was good for packaging, the car was smaller, and more nimble,

:27:46. > :27:48.

:27:48. > :27:54.faster. Jim? He was one of the best. You

:27:54. > :28:03.could give you a shopping trolley and he could drive it quickly.

:28:03. > :28:13.introduced to him, and he said to me that Jim was the greatest driver

:28:13. > :28:13.

:28:13. > :29:14.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 61 seconds

:29:14. > :29:18.that period were underpowered. You had to drive it with a very light

:29:18. > :29:28.touch and keep the momentum going. He was an expert at this. He used

:29:28. > :29:37.less rubber, less brake pads, and less fuel to win a race. Nice to see

:29:37. > :29:43.another Scotsman in it! In 1955, he was coming through would code corner

:29:43. > :29:50.with the engine off. -- through a corner. We thought, what is

:29:50. > :29:56.happening. This happened lap after lap. He said the oil pressure was

:29:56. > :30:01.dropping through the fast right-hander. To save the engine, he

:30:01. > :30:11.was knocking it off and coasting through. And yet he still won the

:30:11. > :30:11.

:30:11. > :30:14.race. In 1963, he won by nearly five race. In 1963, he won by nearly five

:30:14. > :30:24.minutes in the race. Now you know why I say he was the greatest

:30:24. > :30:29.

:30:29. > :30:39.life out of me but it is fantastic. I could never imagine I could be so

:30:39. > :30:43.excited! I am going through and you know the great images of driving,

:30:43. > :30:49.very much like this, and it makes sense because that is the feedback.

:30:49. > :30:53.In the modern car, there is so much load through the steering, you

:30:53. > :30:57.cannot handle those movements because you don't have that load.

:30:57. > :31:07.You have to be quite sure with steering. You are driving at!

:31:07. > :31:08.

:31:08. > :31:16.Absolutely, you are living at! This has been a fantastic day, a real

:31:16. > :31:20.treat. I have to thank you for much. Not just me, all of the team for

:31:20. > :31:26.sharing that experience. It was a legendary period. You are all

:31:26. > :31:30.legends. This car is continuing the legend beyond our journeys on this

:31:30. > :31:40.error and it has been a real privilege to drive. Yes. Thank you

:31:40. > :31:56.

:31:56. > :32:00.for a good job. For a moment, I drive your heroes car and to be

:32:00. > :32:04.flanked by those nights of the pit lane? That is what made it very

:32:04. > :32:07.special, it is clearly very historic and wonderfully prepared but when

:32:07. > :32:11.you are there with those mechanics of both that and worked with the

:32:11. > :32:15.legend that is Jim Clark, they are living legends in their own right

:32:15. > :32:21.and they have played such a very big part in the history of motor racing

:32:21. > :32:29.and they get respect for that, that they deserve. I think he passed the

:32:29. > :32:32.audition to play Jim Clark in the next movie! There is a celebration

:32:32. > :32:39.of his first of three Silverstone victories at the Silverstone classic

:32:39. > :32:42.in four weeks. Right here at Silverstone. Talking of motor sport

:32:42. > :32:46.legends, it is the British Grand Prix and we hoped to have Murray

:32:46. > :32:49.Walker but due to owners he could not actually be with us but we sent

:32:49. > :32:57.a camera to him so he can explain to you why and his thoughts on this

:32:57. > :33:03.season. I fell over in Germany. And I fractured my pelvis and I thought,

:33:03. > :33:08.that is tough luck. And I hobbled about on crutches for a fortnight

:33:08. > :33:14.and I had endless blood tests and as a result, they told me that I had

:33:14. > :33:21.leukaemia, which is cancer of the blood. So that is two strikes. But

:33:21. > :33:26.the good news is, they courted at a very early stage and the doctors are

:33:26. > :33:29.very optimistic that I will be able to defeat it and to the extent that

:33:29. > :33:37.being cheerful about it and I am determined to fight it will be dead.

:33:37. > :33:43.And I will beat it. Silverstone means an enormous amount to me. I

:33:43. > :33:49.first went in 1948 port not the British Grand Prix, the RAC Grand

:33:49. > :33:54.Prix. And I have been to everyone at Silverstone and Brands Hatch and one

:33:54. > :33:58.of the once at Aintree, I have been lucky to have been all these times

:33:58. > :34:03.and have had so many wonderful experiences. We have a very mixed

:34:03. > :34:09.bunch this year. You look at Lewis Hamilton, nobody better than him,

:34:09. > :34:14.arguably. But you are making this difficult transition from McLaren

:34:14. > :34:20.and he has to learn the new team and the new car and the new tyres.

:34:20. > :34:23.Jenson Button, having lost Lewis Hamilton as his team-mate, could be

:34:23. > :34:27.expected to do better than he has done this year and I hope things

:34:27. > :34:33.will improve for him. Because it will be a real problem if they do

:34:33. > :34:37.not. If ever there was a Grand Prix winner for the future, that is Paul

:34:37. > :34:42.di Resta. Look how well he has done with Force India in a car that is

:34:42. > :34:46.not the fastest and against the driver as he is up against. I would

:34:46. > :34:51.say the jury is out as far as Max Chilton is concerned. I don't think

:34:51. > :34:54.the jury has even arrived, as far as I am concerned. He has got a lot to

:34:54. > :35:00.learn and he is going about it the right way so good luck to him and to

:35:00. > :35:07.all of them. And very good luck to you, Murray Walker, from all of us

:35:07. > :35:10.here at the BBC. And indeed the whole community of Formula one.

:35:10. > :35:16.Murray Walker was talking about the British and high-level get on. What

:35:16. > :35:19.are your thoughts this weekend? Firstly, that man, Murray Walker,

:35:20. > :35:23.there are very few on this planet ever to be close to him in terms of

:35:23. > :35:28.greatness, in my view. He is a legend. Let's talk about the

:35:28. > :35:33.drivers! My guess is that Lewis Hamilton will get pole position, it

:35:33. > :35:37.will be a fight between Red Bull and Mercedes and he is up for it. And

:35:38. > :35:43.Paul di Resta will make eight or nine, which would be fabulous.

:35:43. > :35:47.Jenson Button, the jury is out regarding what is going on at

:35:47. > :35:51.McLaren and Max Chilton is learning his trade, he is doing an extreme a

:35:51. > :35:55.competent job and he has to burn like everyone else. The thing about

:35:55. > :35:59.Lewis Hamilton is he has been pretty upset this weekend because he feels

:35:59. > :36:05.like he has not got the best out of his car and he said yesterday like

:36:05. > :36:10.it feels the worst it has been all season. Is he creating his own

:36:10. > :36:16.decoy! Listen, those inner secrets of the driver, they are never going

:36:17. > :36:20.to let us know what is going on. Secretly, I think he has seen what

:36:20. > :36:24.Rosberg has done and he intends to make sure that he died qualifies

:36:24. > :36:32.him. That is the first thing they think about, where is my team-mate

:36:32. > :36:38.going? Here is our technical analyst, Gary Anderson. Lots of

:36:38. > :36:42.developments come here so we are interested. Let's look at Ferrari,

:36:42. > :36:48.we can see the rear wing, early intricate. You can see they have

:36:48. > :36:53.these vertical areas highlighted, they help the airflow going around

:36:53. > :36:57.the car into the low pressure area created by the tyres. When they get

:36:57. > :37:01.that working together, it works as it had a unit and creates more

:37:01. > :37:10.downforce and more consistent downforce. They have different

:37:10. > :37:13.versions of the car. With Grosjean, they have it much tighter around the

:37:13. > :37:17.engine cover, more compact underneath the back. It makes the

:37:17. > :37:22.rear wing work better. Very important to get as much downforce

:37:22. > :37:31.as possible. Kimi Raikkonen, it is different, the double ERS system,

:37:31. > :37:36.taking air from the front, through and out the back. The airflow gets

:37:36. > :37:42.picked up underneath the ring. -- the wing. Inside this white circle

:37:42. > :37:46.is a valve and that is what controls that system, they can switch that on

:37:46. > :37:50.and off at different speeds. As for Red Bull, they are the leaders in

:37:50. > :37:57.this isn't soft pipe technology and the airflow comes around the side.

:37:57. > :38:01.-- exhaust pipe. This allows the high-energy exhaust gases to work

:38:01. > :38:04.much better and cleaner on the brake doctor. And they have gone through

:38:04. > :38:14.this little docked in front of the rear tyre, which they used in Monaco

:38:14. > :38:15.

:38:15. > :38:20.last year, controversially. It was a whole. No, it is a slot. -- nine.

:38:20. > :38:22.will not know until the chequered flag tomorrow. Thank you for

:38:22. > :38:26.pointing that those things because we often don't have enough time.

:38:26. > :38:36.Here we are at Silverstone, everybody has to respect what they

:38:36. > :38:37.

:38:37. > :38:41.have done here years ago. This year, there is no criticism. Fantastic.

:38:41. > :38:48.The drivers adore it and it is always a big spectacle and there are

:38:48. > :38:52.130,000 people here during everybody on. Lydia pictures of the Ferrari

:38:52. > :38:56.garage and Felipe Massa has had a difficult time during practice

:38:56. > :39:03.sessions, completely missing one of them and then they are down on the

:39:03. > :39:09.data. We have been talking about that man, Paul di Resta 's

:39:09. > :39:13.team-mate. We are looking to see if they can both get through. This is

:39:13. > :39:17.their best chance. They are right up there and they have a car that's

:39:17. > :39:22.it's this kind of flowing fast corners. Both drivers are extremely

:39:22. > :39:26.brave and capable. I would be surprised if they cannot make

:39:26. > :39:32.somewhere in the slot between seven and ten. I do believe they can make

:39:32. > :39:36.the final qualifying. That team certainly will, it is a shootout

:39:36. > :39:40.between Red Bull and Mercedes, perhaps. All the talking will be

:39:40. > :39:46.over in minutes as qualifying is about to start on this superb track.

:39:46. > :39:49.Silverstone. One of the permanent tracks and one of the greatest

:39:50. > :39:58.tracks on the calendar but we come to. Also some celebrities. And

:39:58. > :40:02.footballers. They must sportsman. This is the scene, 300,000 over the

:40:02. > :40:12.weekend expected here. My goodness, this qualification is going to be

:40:12. > :40:24.

:40:24. > :40:29.something else! David Coulthard there are few better places to drive

:40:29. > :40:32.a very fast car and at Silverstone. Qualifying is all about extracting

:40:32. > :40:36.the ultimate lap time and some these corners taken at an hundred and 80

:40:36. > :40:40.mph and over, this circuit allows the driver to express himself

:40:40. > :40:44.completely. The home of the British Grand Prix and host of the first

:40:44. > :40:47.ever watch average of event, Silverstone set centrally in England

:40:47. > :40:53.'s countryside and although the layout has altered over the years,

:40:53. > :41:00.some of the track follows the former wartime base that it was with names

:41:00. > :41:05.like Copse, Becketts and Club. And they are associated with some of the

:41:05. > :41:10.great names of the sport. Five-time winners include Jim Clark and Alain

:41:10. > :41:16.Prost. Ford times when Nigel Mansell. The last dish driver to

:41:16. > :41:19.qualify in pole position was Lewis Hamilton in 2007 on his debut season

:41:19. > :41:23.and judging by the pace of the Mercedes car is this morning, he

:41:23. > :41:27.does have a very real chance of repeating that the Red Bull cars

:41:27. > :41:31.were quick and he has his team-mates to worry about. The good news is,

:41:31. > :41:37.conditions are the best we have seen and the track temperature is up to

:41:37. > :41:41.32 degrees. This gets into that window when the tyres on at their

:41:41. > :41:45.Pic performance and we have seen some pretty cool conditions and it

:41:45. > :41:51.was wet yesterday and cool this morning so we have had a slightly

:41:51. > :41:56.obscure performance based on all of those teams and as the temperature

:41:56. > :42:00.increases, we will see a more familiar pattern. Fantastic to see

:42:00. > :42:04.so many people. If Glastonbury is the music festival, Silverstone is

:42:04. > :42:12.the motor sport festival. 80,000 people here yesterday, more than

:42:12. > :42:15.that today and it is expected to host over 120,000 tomorrow. And the

:42:15. > :42:20.busy heliport bringing people from all over the country. I'm glad to

:42:20. > :42:25.say, they are hearing time and the pit lane will soon open up. Looking

:42:25. > :42:29.down over that huge building, the wing, that houses the complex below

:42:29. > :42:34.with all of those garages and then the huge hospitality area above

:42:34. > :42:40.that. Below is where Fernando Alonso is sitting, inside the Ferrari

:42:40. > :42:50.garage. Ferrari have had a bit of a bounce down weekend so far? --

:42:50. > :42:52.

:42:52. > :42:58.bounce down. -- up and down. This morning, he did a handful of lap and

:42:58. > :43:01.they have a track laboratory at the back and they discovered too much of

:43:01. > :43:06.a particular type of metal in the oil and they decided to change the

:43:06. > :43:10.engine, two thirds of the way through. Felipe Massa in particular

:43:10. > :43:14.has had very little dry running and that will certainly affect his

:43:14. > :43:17.performance in qualifying this afternoon. Fernando Alonso has had a

:43:17. > :43:21.smooth run so far but the weight of development and what they have been

:43:21. > :43:26.doing in terms of the set-up means the onus has very much been on him.

:43:26. > :43:30.A quick word -- quick word on the wings, lots of cars have problems

:43:30. > :43:37.through Becketts with this strong tailwind so something to look out

:43:37. > :43:40.for in qualifying. Some fantastic pictures overlooking Silverstone and

:43:40. > :43:45.watching the bounce relaxing before the session gets underway. We saw

:43:45. > :43:50.the drivers Championship. Sebastian Vettel leaving that. And with the

:43:50. > :43:56.constructors championship, read will lead the way. Then Ferrari and

:43:56. > :44:02.Mercedes. Lotus were third earlier on in the season but those points

:44:02. > :44:06.scored by Kimi Raikkonen means that challenge has been blunted? There

:44:06. > :44:09.has been a little bit of drop-off in those results from Lotus and you

:44:09. > :44:15.must question whether their car is bringing those upgrades that we have

:44:15. > :44:20.seen in some of the other teams. That said, Kimi Raikkonen, he is the

:44:20. > :44:24.man to bring that car back, even if only for a few points. As we heard,

:44:24. > :44:29.they have some new bits on the car at the question is, when they work

:44:29. > :44:33.as effectively as they like? Nico Hulkenberg, on-board cyber, the best

:44:33. > :44:38.position he has had this year was 10th place in China and he had that

:44:38. > :44:41.eighth place finish in Malaysia. The champion should we do, triple

:44:41. > :44:49.champion Sebastian Vettel with three pole position s. Five podium

:44:49. > :44:54.finishes. He has not missed out at all this year. Sebastian Vettel

:44:54. > :45:00.being weighed. The driver is an integral part of the overall weight

:45:00. > :45:04.of the car and it has to pass scrutiny. The team are constantly

:45:04. > :45:14.using their skills and backing that up with FIA skills to get some

:45:14. > :45:19.correlation. He likes this circuit. But here is a man who loves it.

:45:19. > :45:23.Lewis Hamilton was fast this morning. He was second fastest to

:45:23. > :45:33.Nico Rosberg, but it was a tiny difference. He had to back off on

:45:33. > :45:34.

:45:34. > :45:44.what was bubbly -- probably his best lap. Straight out onto the circuit

:45:44. > :45:46.

:45:46. > :45:51.goes Nico Hulkenberg. They have hard and medium compound tyres. It is the

:45:51. > :45:57.medium tyre that will do most of the work. Hulkenberg has gone out on a

:45:57. > :46:00.set of hard tyres initially. want to get up to speed. The wind

:46:00. > :46:05.has changed direction slightly. It is better to get up to speed with

:46:05. > :46:13.the circuit. The medium tyre is good for the first lap. It has that

:46:13. > :46:23.advantage. If you have to do to lapse, it is a bit different. -- to

:46:23. > :46:24.

:46:24. > :46:30.We lose six cars at the end of this. Usually the younger teams are in

:46:30. > :46:39.that group. What kind of cut off time do you think they are going to

:46:39. > :46:49.have to achieve to be able to get into that top 16? About one minute

:46:49. > :46:50.

:46:50. > :46:54.and 32. Track champ at your -- temperature

:46:54. > :47:01.is 28, slightly more than we have seen all weekend. Slightly quiet on

:47:01. > :47:07.track at the moment. Grosjean has just gone out.

:47:07. > :47:13.The wind is now more vague crosswind. It is like a headwind in

:47:13. > :47:19.to turn six. There has been a slight variation in

:47:19. > :47:27.wind there. That is something the teams will be looking at. David, the

:47:27. > :47:32.wind was affecting them this morning in Maggots and Becketts.

:47:32. > :47:38.Big airfield, not a lot of air around here. It is one of the

:47:38. > :47:43.challenges of racing at Silverstone. The wind can significant change the

:47:43. > :47:53.balance of the cars. They run really large rear end plates relative to

:47:53. > :47:56.

:47:56. > :48:02.the actual structure that is needed. It does get quite uncomfortable for

:48:02. > :48:07.the cars through Copse Corner. As they run down to Maggots, they are

:48:07. > :48:11.flat out in the first part. Flat there, flat through there, and done

:48:11. > :48:19.a couple of years through the left-hander. This is where it gets

:48:19. > :48:28.really difficult. This will be a DRS section of track

:48:28. > :48:33.tomorrow. They will be able to use that a little bit. No change to the

:48:33. > :48:37.actual layout. It is the same as last year. The odd change to curves,

:48:37. > :48:44.perhaps, but basically it is the same. Hulkenberg is coming through

:48:44. > :48:50.club corner. This is the last turn before the finish line. He sets the

:48:50. > :48:54.initial pace. He was 14th fastest this morning. He is now coming up to

:48:54. > :49:01.the tighter section. Lewis Hamilton just gives a wave to the crowd there

:49:01. > :49:06.on the other side of the gate. That is good to see. It is incredible to

:49:06. > :49:11.see at this sign of qualifying. It shows how relaxed he is with 16

:49:11. > :49:16.minutes to go. You never know, somebody could blow an engine and

:49:16. > :49:19.drop oil. There is all sorts of unusual events that could happen to

:49:19. > :49:25.make it difficult for you to go through qualifying. But Lewis is in

:49:25. > :49:32.a happy place. Good to see. He seems happier than he was

:49:32. > :49:36.yesterday. We're watching Grosjean here. He's on board the Lotus. He

:49:36. > :49:41.has failed to score in the last three events of the season. He

:49:41. > :49:45.started the season initially well. But it hasn't come together for him.

:49:45. > :49:55.He has been a winner here in a lower category at the past. -- in the

:49:55. > :49:55.

:49:55. > :50:05.past. His nickname should be yo-yo, his performances so up and down.

:50:05. > :50:06.

:50:06. > :50:12.This is a different type of track to Bahrain. So the stone is definitely

:50:12. > :50:16.warming up as we go through the weekend. -- Silverstone. According

:50:16. > :50:20.to was Gary was telling us earlier, that should be around about the mark

:50:20. > :50:24.to get him through to the second part of qualifying. If he can do

:50:24. > :50:34.that on his hard tyres, that would be good. He looked mighty through

:50:34. > :50:37.

:50:37. > :50:44.Abbey. Let's just listen. You can see that track with Jenson Button

:50:44. > :50:52.tomorrow. Not the fastest car out there, but is early able to run

:50:52. > :50:56.through Abbey. Then through this tricky section. This is all taken

:50:56. > :51:00.flat. This is one of the trickiest corners as you come down to the

:51:00. > :51:10.clubhouse on the right-hand side. Some of the greats of the past of

:51:10. > :51:12.

:51:12. > :51:17.you from there. It is hurry up and wait three apex. And then -- it is

:51:17. > :51:24.hurry up and wait through the apex. And then it is another take a breath

:51:24. > :51:30.corner. Down one gear. Impressive. It is fantastic to watch. Here's

:51:30. > :51:39.another one. Listen. We are going to watch the overhead.

:51:39. > :51:44.This is the sequence of corners. They are going in at 185 mph. Perez

:51:44. > :51:48.had a difficult morning session. He had a tyre ago on him. He came back

:51:48. > :51:54.into the pits with lots of bits of rubber battering the bodywork. The

:51:54. > :52:01.tyre had got cut. They think it was caused either by debris or a curve.

:52:01. > :52:09.That is what Pirelli were saying at the end of analysing the tyre.

:52:09. > :52:15.They have actually dropped and lowered the curves. It gives a hefty

:52:15. > :52:21.vibration if you run onto it. At the back, it is often the case that the

:52:21. > :52:26.driver drops a tyre over there. It tends to be a bit unfinished. So

:52:26. > :52:30.it's possible the damage came from that.

:52:30. > :52:35.Hulkenberg and Raikkonen are in the kind of ballpark that Gary said he

:52:35. > :52:40.thinks they will need. Paul di Resta is going on to his quick lap now. We

:52:40. > :52:44.will be able to watching getting into that kind of ballpark. Grosjean

:52:44. > :52:51.and Raikkonen are running different set-ups and yet they are within a

:52:51. > :53:01.couple of tenths of each other. Normally not big differences between

:53:01. > :53:07.

:53:07. > :53:12.the cars here. You have a trade-off. There is

:53:12. > :53:15.significant areas here where you can pull back the lap times. It is not

:53:15. > :53:19.unusual to see difference set-ups between drivers. Somewhere like

:53:19. > :53:26.Monte Carlo, you would converge more onto what would be the best

:53:26. > :53:31.mechanical set-up. It is just mighty there. Fantastic. You can't believe

:53:31. > :53:36.a car can go through that corner at that kind of speed. For the guys out

:53:36. > :53:40.there, they are getting the full force of a formal one car at Copse.

:53:40. > :53:48.This is one of the best places to watch a Formula One car anywhere in

:53:48. > :53:57.the world. Two or three times slower than the

:53:57. > :54:06.fastest car. But an impressive start to the lap. Let's just see how Paula

:54:06. > :54:09.is able to finish this lap time. -- Paul.

:54:09. > :54:19.Second place at the moment for Paul di Resta. He splits the two Lotus

:54:19. > :54:22.

:54:22. > :54:27.cars. Let's just see, this was Grosjean one moment ago. He already

:54:27. > :54:37.had set a lap time. That is common with the Lotus. We have seen that at

:54:37. > :54:38.

:54:39. > :54:47.the contracts this year. -- at some tracks.

:54:47. > :54:52.They have a wooden plank, as it is affectionately known, and in that

:54:52. > :55:00.they have these measuring inserts made out of some hard metal. I don't

:55:00. > :55:09.even pretend to know the name. That tends to be what you get the

:55:09. > :55:19.sparking from. Two legends of different sports there. Jen Luca

:55:19. > :55:41.

:55:41. > :55:51.Bialik? I'm showing my knowledge of and used all of the curve stop --

:55:51. > :55:53.

:55:53. > :56:03.curve. Early on the gas. Down into the braking. A short shift into

:56:03. > :56:05.

:56:05. > :56:10.third. And he goes fastest. Look at that. Hamilton is looking as though

:56:10. > :56:16.he is on a good lap. Grosjean improved his time in a moment ago.

:56:16. > :56:19.He is still set -- second. They are reporting on the radio that he has

:56:19. > :56:28.problems with the back end of the car being unstable after breaking.

:56:28. > :56:31.That is something the team are going to have to think about. Hamilton

:56:31. > :56:38.goes fastest outright. That is going to give him a good boost of

:56:38. > :56:41.confidence in this part of qualifying. That was half a second

:56:41. > :56:49.quicker than they achieved this morning. Last year, it was wet. Pole

:56:49. > :56:59.position was difficult. A year later, I wonder if we are getting

:56:59. > :57:04.down to that kind of level. The track is going to get quicker,

:57:04. > :57:08.frankly. Both Mercedes have gone out on the

:57:08. > :57:11.medium tyre rather than the hard compound tyre, which is what

:57:11. > :57:21.everybody else has run until this point. A slightly different

:57:21. > :57:23.

:57:23. > :57:28.strategy. We are looking at Fernando Alonso now. That is him cutting the

:57:28. > :57:36.inside of the curve. That will have cost him time down my gets an Hangar

:57:36. > :57:41.Straight. -- down Maggots. Not a particularly strong lad here.

:57:41. > :57:47.Mercedes Mayfield... There you go. He is heading for the pit. Mercedes

:57:47. > :57:53.may feel there is no point running the prime tyre. Let's watch this. It

:57:53. > :58:01.is the last part of Becketts. Watch him on the right. A massive

:58:02. > :58:05.oversteer at 150 mph. He cut it way too much there and paid the price.

:58:05. > :58:11.lovely image, though. A beautiful shot of Fernando Alonso. That cost

:58:11. > :58:16.him time. We saw a lot of people in trouble at that corner this morning.

:58:16. > :58:20.It does look as though things are a bit easier.

:58:20. > :58:30.The cars get unsettled at that speed if you cut beyond the curve. Whether

:58:30. > :58:32.

:58:33. > :58:38.it that is -- that is... It is an unusual line to be on. Adrian Sutil,

:58:38. > :58:47.for the team that is based just over the road. They can walk you from the

:58:47. > :58:53.factory if they wanted. The best he has qualified here is just outside

:58:53. > :58:57.the top ten. His porn mags, Paul di Resta, getting well out of his way.

:58:57. > :59:02.Using the hard compound tyre. Currently, di Resta is seventh. He

:59:02. > :59:05.is heading back to the pit lane. Let's see what kind of time Sutil

:59:05. > :59:13.does here. Is he going to be challenging into the top ten? He

:59:13. > :59:18.should be in there. He goes forth. -- into fourth. That should see him

:59:18. > :59:25.safe. We have got six minutes of this first part of qualifying. Who

:59:25. > :59:27.is in the danger zone? You can see the numbers on the graphic. I don't

:59:27. > :59:34.think that is going to last for long. You are riding with Mark

:59:34. > :59:38.Webber. As we have seen, they come out quite late in a session. Didn't

:59:38. > :59:48.sound like he shifted down there. So, saving seventh gear through

:59:48. > :00:00.

:00:00. > :00:09.Copse. Struggling to read that. Oh, corner. Heavy braking. Into second

:00:09. > :00:17.gear. Very early change-up. I noticed that this morning as well.

:00:17. > :00:24.That puts them into third place. Behind both Mercedes car is. --

:00:24. > :00:29.cars. They will not be disappointed with that and he never had to work

:00:29. > :00:34.his wheel around that lap. Nice, steady, well within the balance of

:00:34. > :00:41.the car. More to come from that Red Bull. His team-mate, Sebastian

:00:41. > :00:47.Vettel, comes around. That will put him safely within the top ten.

:00:47. > :00:55.Jenson Button is in the drop so because he has not done any lap yet.

:00:56. > :00:59.His first sector was quite slow. Red Bull, evenly matched. Interesting to

:00:59. > :01:05.see which one comes out on top. Sebastian Vettel has had the edge in

:01:05. > :01:13.qualifying. But this is a circuit that Mark Webber loves. Just a quick

:01:13. > :01:18.of date or Ferrari. The mechanics are working away on this car. He

:01:18. > :01:25.said this morning that he was not happy with the balance. I know that

:01:25. > :01:34.moment he had through their gets was deciding his position but it would

:01:34. > :01:40.appear he is still not happy with the balance. -- Becketts. Thank you.

:01:40. > :01:49.Fernando Alonso, pole position here last year. Wet and dry positions --

:01:49. > :01:57.conditions. That session was delayed by the rain. TEAM RADIO: one more

:01:57. > :02:01.time, Sebastian. They perhaps feel that is not enough. I would have

:02:01. > :02:11.thought he was very safe, where he is at the moment. The benchmark of

:02:11. > :02:13.

:02:13. > :02:18.the Burmaster that must be more encouraging for McLaren. That

:02:18. > :02:25.compares with the fastest, that is not too bad, I would have thought.

:02:25. > :02:33.On-board with Pastor Maldonado. Venezuelan driving for Williams, who

:02:33. > :02:40.are celebrating 600 Grand Prix is over the course of this weekend.

:02:40. > :02:50.Quite an amazing mark. C where he can come. 14th at the moment, ahead

:02:50. > :02:54.of his team-mate but only just safe in that top 16. Hulkenberg, he has

:02:54. > :03:00.just improved, eighth place. He has dragged himself out of danger.

:03:00. > :03:05.Jenson Button finally does a lap. Almost exactly one second off the

:03:05. > :03:15.pace of Lewis Hamilton. Bottom also using the medium compound. --

:03:15. > :03:16.

:03:16. > :03:21.autumn. -- Jenson Button. That is an impressive gap, it will probably

:03:21. > :03:25.reduce during race time but a depressing sight for Jenson Button.

:03:25. > :03:33.Kimi Raikkonen has come up to third place so Lotus are showing great

:03:33. > :03:37.form, here. Kimi Raikkonen has used the medium compound and Grosjean has

:03:37. > :03:40.stayed on the hard compound. And they have done virtually the same

:03:41. > :03:49.lap time which might imply that Grosjean is the quicker of the two

:03:49. > :03:54.cars. Felipe Massa, he has had a tough time. He needs to keep it

:03:54. > :03:58.clean this afternoon. He just constantly seems to be in the shadow

:03:58. > :04:04.of Fernando Alonso, which is no shame when you consider how good he

:04:04. > :04:08.is. Felipe Massa has got good speed but he seems to be the one that gets

:04:08. > :04:18.tangled up in those little incidents. He is going on to one lap

:04:18. > :04:27.

:04:27. > :04:33.nine. He is on the softer tyres. slow that corner is. Not much

:04:33. > :04:40.finesse on that throttle. Whether that is just a function of the

:04:40. > :04:47.amount of grip when they fire up the exhaust. Just overly tight with that

:04:47. > :04:54.and to aggressive behind the wheel. We will find out in time. This is

:04:54. > :04:59.the old start finish line. Towards Copse. This appears out of you. And

:04:59. > :05:04.reappears once again. And Felipe Massa, trying to move himself out of

:05:04. > :05:11.what is the drop son. We have got Valtteri Bottas, Felipe Massa,

:05:11. > :05:17.hoping to improve, Charles Pic, Max Chilton. And Giedo van der Garde, he

:05:17. > :05:25.is on the track at the moment, Felipe Massa is not where he needs

:05:25. > :05:30.to be. He should be safe. Alonso is one second down at the moment on

:05:30. > :05:35.Lewis Hamilton. If I am doing my mathematics properly. It does not

:05:35. > :05:41.look and courage in in terms of Ferrari? C what he can do as he goes

:05:41. > :05:45.across the line. 14th, he just displaces Fernando Alonso. Almost

:05:45. > :05:49.put him in trouble but I don't think anyone will challenge. But what can

:05:49. > :05:57.Valtteri Bottas do? Again, Valtteri Bottas I'd qualifies Pastor

:05:57. > :06:02.Maldonado. No, he doesn't. Pastor Maldonado is still on one lap. Thank

:06:02. > :06:06.you for pointing that out! And Pastor Maldonado does just get him

:06:06. > :06:12.back. Very tight times. And Pastor Maldonado has made it through into

:06:12. > :06:22.the next part of qualifying. Valtteri Bottas has failed. Giedo

:06:22. > :06:22.

:06:22. > :06:32.van der Garde has gone through. Charles Pic has died qualified Jules

:06:32. > :06:32.

:06:32. > :06:38.Bianchi. Valtteri Bottas and Gutierrez have been dropped and both

:06:39. > :06:42.rookies. We know how quick Valtteri Bottas can be windy conditions are

:06:42. > :06:47.changeable but that just shows that Williams are not fast enough in the

:06:47. > :06:51.current guys and they are still struggling. So, the driver at have

:06:51. > :07:01.been knocked out of macro Valtteri Bottas, Gutierrez, Charles Pic,

:07:01. > :07:05.

:07:05. > :07:15.Jules Bianchi, Van der Garde and Max Chilton. TEAM RADIO: unfortunately,

:07:15. > :07:26.

:07:26. > :07:34.in Canada. Valtteri Bottas he was all smiles. Not at Silverstone, the

:07:34. > :07:38.conditions not sitting that car. was always a struggle and when you

:07:38. > :07:42.come back, what happened in Canada was pure driving skill, he dragged

:07:42. > :07:49.that car here and the does not have the car, it is not able to get up.

:07:49. > :07:53.There was a fight with Maldonado. And he fell file of the qualifying.

:07:53. > :07:58.It will be a big race tomorrow and good experience but he will be

:07:58. > :08:03.massively disappointed. Some nail-biting in the pit lane. Some

:08:03. > :08:11.technical problems going on? Bar, Felipe Massa is one excitable. And

:08:11. > :08:16.Fernando Alonso. Ferrari have got long faces. And when you consider

:08:16. > :08:20.Felipe Massa, only a couple of races ago, monocle, that was a shocker. He

:08:20. > :08:24.has to watch what is going on and get himself together because the

:08:24. > :08:29.team need points. And they are on the back food all the time. That

:08:29. > :08:36.does not help progress. 14 and 15, unless something happens, they might

:08:36. > :08:40.find themselves out? I would not worry about Fernando Alonso, he has

:08:40. > :08:47.that in a passion that he can drag things up with. Felipe Massa, on the

:08:47. > :08:51.other hand, he will be concerned for himself because he has had a

:08:51. > :08:57.terrible date yesterday and this will not be much better today. --

:08:57. > :09:02.day. Jenson Button said he was surprised at just how much grip

:09:02. > :09:07.there was out there? He probably said that but what is my best

:09:07. > :09:13.position coming here? If I can make it into the middle of the pack, 12,

:09:13. > :09:17.13, 14, he could possibly have a decent result and he would like to

:09:17. > :09:22.be number rate. My guess is that the car is not able to do that yet.

:09:23. > :09:30.Eight would be the top qualifying for him. Lewis Hamilton looks

:09:30. > :09:36.incredibly relaxed. Waving to the crowd. What did I say? Decoy! He is

:09:36. > :09:43.trying to fool us! Tom is that the team principal of Caterham...

:09:43. > :09:51.you for your time, 19 and 21, any thoughts goes Mac not too bad given

:09:51. > :09:55.our position in the Championship. had a very good lap and that is very

:09:55. > :09:58.good and we are very pleased with that. It was more difficult because

:09:58. > :10:07.of the grid penalties we shall suffer tomorrow so the start of the

:10:07. > :10:17.weekend has been tough for the preparations. Degradation is a very

:10:17. > :10:20.

:10:20. > :10:29.big issue. Everything is around that this morning and this afternoon. He

:10:29. > :10:34.only had one attempt today. Here we are, we know it will be the long run

:10:34. > :10:37.and some distance for them to catch up. They are rookies but we are

:10:37. > :10:44.supporting them and it is good to see that we are making progress.

:10:44. > :10:51.will beat Marussia this weekend? That is how we see it. No points on

:10:51. > :10:56.Saturday. But we think we are more competitive here. And we shall be

:10:56. > :11:00.more competitive in the race. The biggest thing was to do that on

:11:00. > :11:09.Saturday, which we have done. It is looking promising. Which is an

:11:09. > :11:14.interesting battle. Militia are doing a great job. -- Marussia.

:11:14. > :11:17.position of Heikki Kovalainen, he is coming to races, and it must be very

:11:17. > :11:25.unsettling for the drivers to have him hovering in the background.

:11:25. > :11:29.While you bring him? We need to have the third driver and that is

:11:29. > :11:32.important for all of the team in the paddock. He is different, he is

:11:32. > :11:39.experienced and he has been with us in the past. It is very useful to

:11:40. > :11:43.have his feedback and his views for the technical team. It puts pressure

:11:43. > :11:47.on everyone, the technical team and the drivers, but they have no

:11:47. > :11:50.problem with that because we all need pressure, including myself. But

:11:50. > :11:57.there is no Hayden plan, we are committed to all of our drivers.

:11:57. > :12:07.Good luck tomorrow. Thanks a lot. Some extra pressure perhaps as well

:12:07. > :12:08.

:12:08. > :12:11.on the British teams? Let us find out how they get on. So, the second

:12:11. > :12:14.part of qualifying and slightly shorter at 15 minutes. Getting into

:12:14. > :12:22.the more serious business and the top ten. We will drop six more

:12:22. > :12:28.drivers. And the lap times are coming in pretty fast. Gary, the

:12:29. > :12:33.track seems to be getting... TEAM RADIO: there is still time to gain

:12:33. > :12:39.on the last corner, getting more on the exit. The track seems to be

:12:39. > :12:43.getting quicker? The temperatures, yes. The higher the temperature,

:12:43. > :12:47.with these medium tyres, the better, and the quicker you can get

:12:47. > :12:52.those tyres working. In the morning it took one or two laps to get them

:12:52. > :12:55.going and now it is only one lap. The times and we saw in the first

:12:55. > :13:05.session and looking at your car collisions, what do we have to do to

:13:05. > :13:15.get into that top ten? It will have to be low that the one, or 31.2 or

:13:15. > :13:18.

:13:18. > :13:23.31.3. -- low 31. You have to be lively on this one, you have to do

:13:23. > :13:28.the run and be ready for the next one. Once again, we saw Mercedes

:13:28. > :13:32.just using those softer tyres, and other teams, the top teams, tend to

:13:32. > :13:37.use the harder tyre and Felipe Massa went on to medium. That is a mix?

:13:37. > :13:41.Yes, it is difficult. I think for Mercedes, they feel that harder

:13:41. > :13:45.tyres by the best race tyres and they want to save as many as

:13:45. > :13:48.possible and using this medium tyres for one love, that was good and they

:13:48. > :13:55.can use that same set of tyres for this session and the back the right

:13:55. > :14:03.schedule. We will see what happens, Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton targeting

:14:03. > :14:10.pole position today. Trying to out qualify one another. Nico Rosberg

:14:10. > :14:14.has had three pole positions this year. Lewis Hamilton has had plenty

:14:14. > :14:18.of front row starts at pole position here would mean so much to him. And

:14:19. > :14:24.of course, Red Bull, we know how strong they have been here. Both

:14:24. > :14:27.Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. They are very capable of taking pole

:14:28. > :14:33.position but their first target is to get into that top ten. That is

:14:33. > :14:38.what matters. Mark Webber is currently on the circuit on a used

:14:38. > :14:44.said those compound tyres. This is more of a sighting than an attempt

:14:44. > :14:46.to set any ultimate pace? They might have made slight adjustments or some

:14:47. > :14:54.other electronic adjustments available to the drivers within the

:14:55. > :15:00.cock it. -- cockpit. The drivers seem to be hanging in. You will

:15:00. > :15:03.always have that Pic in performance from the new tyres. In terms of

:15:03. > :15:13.balance and allowing them to get out there and feel the circuit

:15:13. > :15:13.

:15:13. > :15:18.conditions. Whether heads down the Hangar Straight. Grosjean is

:15:18. > :15:24.building up to going on to his own quick lap here. So, plenty of space

:15:24. > :15:34.for Mark Webber to finish cleanly. Just out of his last corner. The

:15:34. > :15:34.

:15:34. > :15:40.cars are scrabbling to put down the power. He does 1: 31.30. That

:15:40. > :15:44.compared to what he did earlier. So, quicker straightaway, and that

:15:44. > :15:51.was on a set of hard tyres. It shows the track is continuing to get

:15:51. > :15:57.quicker. It gives grip on the grid as you run

:15:57. > :16:02.through the turns. The best lap is usually the last lap. That is where

:16:02. > :16:12.maximum rubber is on the surface. What a successful team this is, Red

:16:12. > :16:17.Bull. I was up late last night with some charity auction winners. They

:16:17. > :16:26.were still here working. They did not seem to have a panic on. But it

:16:26. > :16:35.shows the level of dedication of the boys here working. I'd didn't see so

:16:35. > :16:45.many other seen as Micro senior team personnel here. -- I didn't see so

:16:45. > :16:51.

:16:51. > :16:59.many other senior team personnel engine. So he does go for a down

:16:59. > :17:05.change. If you are in seventh, you don't really accelerate on the exit

:17:05. > :17:10.to Becketts. If you go to six, you will accelerate but you also slow

:17:10. > :17:15.the car down at the apex of the turn. It is about levels of

:17:15. > :17:20.confidence and the performance of the car. Massa 's split times are

:17:20. > :17:28.not showing anything exceptional. Rosberg is going quickly as we

:17:28. > :17:32.speak. Webber is still faster than the moment. Triano, the young

:17:32. > :17:42.Australian, is hoping he gets to take over from the old Australia. --

:17:42. > :17:54.

:17:54. > :17:57.He is fastest on a used set of tyres. That is impressive. Webber is

:17:57. > :18:07.now second. Let's see what Alonso does through the tight section that

:18:07. > :18:10.

:18:10. > :18:19.completes the lab. -- the lap. So, that coincides with what Harry was

:18:19. > :18:26.saying. Hamilton has just done a 1: 31.2. Again, that was on a used set

:18:26. > :18:36.of tyres. They may have done enough. They may not need to come back out.

:18:36. > :18:39.

:18:39. > :18:43.That could be a gamble. The track is continuing to improve.

:18:43. > :18:49.8.5 minutes of this second part of qualifying to go here. We're

:18:49. > :18:54.watching Adrian Sutil in the Force India. He is fifth. Let's see

:18:54. > :19:04.whether this lap is going to be an improvement. It is. He goes into

:19:04. > :19:04.

:19:04. > :19:08.fourth. Force in the are showing their cars have outright speed. He

:19:08. > :19:18.is a former winner of the British comprehensive. One of his most

:19:18. > :19:27.

:19:27. > :19:36.amazing wins was here in the wet in We will be out to get the words of

:19:36. > :19:46.one world champion on another 's car. You were excited about driving

:19:46. > :19:51.

:19:51. > :20:01.the 1988 car, won't you? -- weren't you? It was fantastic.

:20:01. > :20:03.

:20:03. > :20:08.In the drop zone for the top ten, Hamilton, Raikkonen and Hulkenberg.

:20:08. > :20:14.Raikkonen is coming around to the latter part of the lap. This is a

:20:14. > :20:24.used set of the medium compound tyre. Grosjean did his work on the

:20:24. > :20:26.

:20:26. > :20:31.hard compound tyre. So, again, a good work by McLaren. On board with

:20:32. > :20:41.Jenson Button. He is about to come played his first flying lap. He is

:20:42. > :20:43.

:20:43. > :20:53.on a used set of the softer tyre, Crosses the line. He is only 11. No

:20:53. > :21:02.doubt he is going to be coming back Interesting, that rear shot from

:21:02. > :21:06.McLaren. You can see the head restraint around Button 's helmet.

:21:06. > :21:10.They are located where the driver 's hands are, with a couple of pins so

:21:10. > :21:20.they can even move quickly. Doesn't look like it is fitting as well as

:21:20. > :21:24.it might normally do. Perez just coming out. He has outqualified

:21:24. > :21:34.Jenson Button at the last three events, but he has missed Q3 several

:21:34. > :21:35.

:21:35. > :21:43.times this year. He had a punctured tyre. It has not been a particularly

:21:43. > :21:49.good start to the day for Perez. is interesting that the two Lotus

:21:49. > :21:57.cars have gone a bit slower than in the first one. Mercedes from both

:21:57. > :22:03.those guys managed to go faster. -- Mercedes, both those guys managed to

:22:03. > :22:13.go faster. They think they are safe. We think

:22:13. > :22:20.so, too. Felipe Massa told Rob earlier in the session that he had

:22:20. > :22:30.some graining on the tyres. They were both looking at an

:22:30. > :22:32.

:22:32. > :22:36.overlay. They will be looking to see where he can improve. Rob, his

:22:36. > :22:41.engineer, is looking through with him.

:22:41. > :22:49.It is interesting from Sebastian Vettel. He is on the softer tyre.

:22:49. > :22:59.Can he get the Red Bull onto a similar kind of pace? So early on

:22:59. > :23:01.

:23:01. > :23:11.the throttle at the apex. Massa seemed very aggressive on the power.

:23:11. > :23:12.

:23:12. > :23:21.He is up on the split time. Looking good so far. A long apex of there.

:23:21. > :23:27.Out of Luffield. Down to was Copse Corner, the commitment corner. --

:23:27. > :23:32.two wards. They make it look so easy. But the speed they carry

:23:32. > :23:38.through this section is unbelievable. Using a bit of curve,

:23:38. > :23:46.but not as much as Alonzo did earlier. Nice and tidy all the way

:23:46. > :23:56.through the corner. He's having a tidy lap here. He's a tent or so

:23:56. > :23:56.

:23:56. > :24:01.down. -- a 10th. As we said with Mark Webber earlier,

:24:01. > :24:11.not much work going on with the steering wheel. The car is tracking

:24:11. > :24:13.

:24:13. > :24:23.closed between Red Bull and Mercedes. The battle for pole

:24:23. > :24:23.

:24:23. > :24:33.position will become those for cars. He had a feeling that Mercedes have

:24:33. > :24:35.

:24:35. > :24:41.something up their sleeve. Button is currently they're in 12th. 14th only

:24:41. > :24:51.for Maldonado. It is not going to be enough. Grosjean is seventh fastest.

:24:51. > :25:00.

:25:00. > :25:09.out in Canada. It keeps him in the frame to replace Mark Webber at Red

:25:09. > :25:19.Bull. What is he going to do? We are going to be watching him closely.

:25:19. > :25:20.

:25:20. > :25:25.Watch and listen. Impressive through Becketts.

:25:25. > :25:32.that is not what he needed at all. That will have cost him. It will

:25:32. > :25:39.cost him all the way down Hangar Straight. I think he will have lost

:25:39. > :25:46.some time there. This is going to be tight for him.

:25:46. > :25:55.On such tiny moments or potatoes last. -- on such tiny moments,

:25:55. > :26:05.reputations are lost. He is running out of time and running out of

:26:05. > :26:05.

:26:05. > :26:15.tyres. Ricciardo is in the top ten. Prince Michael of Kent there, with

:26:15. > :26:23.

:26:23. > :26:31.Williams celebrating their record question is, can Jenson Button get

:26:31. > :26:39.into the top ten? Both McLarens are there at this stage. Ricciardo has

:26:39. > :26:43.gone third. What a great lap and what a time to do it. With all the

:26:43. > :26:53.speculation about the future of that other driver at Red Bull, Ricciardo

:26:53. > :26:54.

:26:54. > :27:00.goes third. He is very safe in the top ten. Both Williams and Sauber

:27:00. > :27:10.with struggle to get near a top-10 time Hill. Paul di Resta has got to

:27:10. > :27:10.

:27:10. > :27:17.do something. He is only ninth. He could be squeezed out.

:27:17. > :27:24.Those are personal best sectors. Ricciardo was purple in the second

:27:24. > :27:34.sector, which tells us he is fastest of all in this session.

:27:34. > :27:36.

:27:36. > :27:46.I am not sure he is safe yet. Di Resta goes fifth, behind Hamilton.

:27:46. > :27:56.Button is in 10th place. He pushes Jean-Eric Vergne out. Alonso is in a

:27:56. > :27:56.

:27:56. > :28:03.bit of danger himself. He has been pushed down to eighth. Williams will

:28:03. > :28:13.not have a car in the top ten here today. Hulkenberg has improved, but

:28:13. > :28:16.again he has not done enough. Alonso is through. Raikkonen has improved.

:28:16. > :28:26.Matter is a danger. Button has been pushed down. Ashraf Massa is a

:28:26. > :28:30.danger. He is out! He has failed to make it out of the top ten. Alonso

:28:30. > :28:40.has only just scraped through, and at a time when Ferrari need to be

:28:40. > :28:50.keeping the pressure on Red Bull, it has not happened that way.

:28:50. > :28:54.

:28:54. > :28:58.He was starting to find form when it comes down to it.

:28:58. > :29:06.Very close times at the end there. You can see the two Lotus cars. They

:29:06. > :29:10.did virtually the same lap time. But after failing to score with both

:29:10. > :29:18.cars last time in Canada, the big story at the British Grand Prix,

:29:18. > :29:24.sadly, is that neither McLaren has made the top ten. A bit of personnel

:29:24. > :29:34.satisfaction in that Jenson is in front of his team-mate.

:29:34. > :30:00.

:30:00. > :30:04.Jean-Eric Vergne, Perez, Hulkenberg perhaps Perez was punished for the

:30:04. > :30:10.lack of track time. But the car is not good enough today? More of the

:30:10. > :30:15.same. Very sad for those people, like myself, who are fans of McLaren

:30:15. > :30:18.and we do not want to see this happening. But we must face reality

:30:18. > :30:23.and it is a very poor car at the moment and the drivers are not being

:30:23. > :30:26.given a chance to get themselves into final qualifying. Daniel

:30:26. > :30:32.Ricciardo desperately trying to get into the sunshine, there is one Seat

:30:32. > :30:39.going. Jean-Eric Vergne trying to get through and unfortunately it did

:30:39. > :30:43.not work. With this incident... John Arlotte Fern was the star over the

:30:44. > :30:53.last couple of races and he did so well. Now it is a turn of Daniel

:30:54. > :30:56.

:30:56. > :31:03.Ricciardo. He came into the sport as a huge star and he will be groomed.

:31:03. > :31:07.-- Jean-Eric Vergne. They have made strange decisions. I think it is too

:31:07. > :31:11.early to say who will get this, all sorts of names are going around and

:31:11. > :31:16.we try to get it out of Christian today and he was quiet. I think the

:31:16. > :31:23.important thing is, if Ricciardo could qualify anywhere close to

:31:23. > :31:26.where he is in the real race, to actually race at this level, that

:31:26. > :31:32.would be a great indicator to see how good he will be. It would be a

:31:32. > :31:38.headline. Let's talk about Valtteri Bottas, in Canada he took third

:31:38. > :31:44.place. This is the on-board shot. Let us be clear, his car is not

:31:44. > :31:54.great. We have spoken to Claire Williams. She is involved in an

:31:54. > :31:58.

:31:58. > :32:01.Executive role in this car is not was your team-mate? Yes, he had the

:32:01. > :32:09.better lap in the end and I was struggling with the balance of the

:32:09. > :32:13.car. Especially with the medium tyres. Yes, if you could go back,

:32:13. > :32:18.you could always do things better but that was it. This is our pace at

:32:18. > :32:23.the moment. It is a tough race tomorrow? It will not be easy.If

:32:23. > :32:27.the conditions are stable, I think with the strategy as well, it is

:32:27. > :32:31.difficult to make a big difference here because for me, I cannot get

:32:31. > :32:37.too much of the difference on the medium or hard compounds. It will

:32:37. > :32:42.not be easy but we will do our best. He just has to keep his chin up?

:32:42. > :32:48.still has to prove himself? He is on a learning curve, he is a surprise

:32:48. > :32:52.choice, and he has taken over from Bruno Senna and I think he is doing

:32:52. > :32:55.a very good job. He is doing his best to drag the team and any

:32:55. > :33:01.drivers to be on their side and everybody marking in together to

:33:01. > :33:10.make sure that the team works. I think he is a perfect team player.

:33:11. > :33:15.You felt he was a surprise choice? I think. -- I do think so. He was

:33:15. > :33:19.there as a tester raster, and that is the way things happen. They could

:33:19. > :33:24.have gone for a bigger name or a more experienced driver but they are

:33:24. > :33:31.going for somebody like Valtteri Bottas, who can be a champion in the

:33:31. > :33:36.future and Williams have the history of doing this. Felipe Massa did not

:33:36. > :33:42.have much track time at all and perhaps that is the reason why he

:33:42. > :33:49.has not managed to get through? is more of Monaco, just one thing

:33:49. > :33:55.after another. And when things start to go bad, it just catapults.

:33:55. > :34:01.Ferrari this weekend are yet to prove themselves. Fernando Alonso,

:34:01. > :34:07.not looking very comfortable? And Kimi Raikkonen and Lotus were not

:34:07. > :34:12.looking hot? That is right, there is more pace to be fired from Lotus and

:34:12. > :34:16.that has been their weakness in terms of the I qualifying pace.

:34:16. > :34:21.is the story for Ferrari and Lotus, they race well but do not qualify as

:34:21. > :34:25.well as they need to. That might not be bad when you have to manage the

:34:25. > :34:30.tyres and those different challenges around the circuit. Those cooler

:34:30. > :34:34.conditions relative to other tracks. They may not be able to make the

:34:34. > :34:41.comeback they have made in other races. But there is plenty of action

:34:41. > :34:44.upfront. Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil showing well for Force India,

:34:44. > :34:48.Adrian Sutil showing very well in that last sequence, with the fourth

:34:48. > :34:53.fastest time. And Mercedes are definitely shooting for pole

:34:53. > :34:57.position here. Nico Rosberg quietly assessing his chances. I wonder if

:34:57. > :35:03.the fourth pole position of the season would be possible? That would

:35:03. > :35:13.be something. All of those faces of the team on the helmet of Sebastian

:35:13. > :35:14.

:35:14. > :35:21.Silverstone is underway and the temperature on the track is 28

:35:21. > :35:25.degrees, so consistent conditions. Felipe Massa not making top ten and

:35:25. > :35:29.Fernando Alonso not as quick as we would have expected? It was a pretty

:35:29. > :35:33.good lap, so there is nothing in the back pocket to take out for Fernando

:35:33. > :35:39.Alonso, and the car is not look back at has a performance I would have

:35:39. > :35:46.expected. Are we expecting Red Bull and Mercedes to contest the top?

:35:46. > :35:54.read will have enough speed? -- Red Bull. Mercedes have only used one

:35:55. > :35:58.set of tyres to get to where they are. It is the battle with both Red

:35:58. > :36:02.Bull cars running the new set of the medium tyres so it will be

:36:02. > :36:07.interesting to see who can do what. I think Mercedes have still got it.

:36:07. > :36:14.That will be quite a contest. shall see. If it is Mercedes, who

:36:14. > :36:20.will it be? Nico Rosberg or Lewis Hamilton? Nico Rosberg 's father

:36:20. > :36:28.took a very famous pole position here at Silverstone, 106 two miles

:36:28. > :36:32.per hour. And that was 28 years ago. Just after Nico Rosberg was born. He

:36:32. > :36:36.celebrated his birthday coming into this weekend. That was a very famous

:36:36. > :36:41.lap and people still talk about that. I wish I had been on the

:36:41. > :36:46.sidelines to see that. He was one of the most brave and committed

:36:47. > :36:52.qualifiers. And Nico Rosberg has the chance to edit those exploits but

:36:52. > :37:00.Ferrari, we are keeping an eye on them? We want to see if they can

:37:00. > :37:04.unleash something as this track defaults. That is one of the great

:37:04. > :37:10.things about the fan base that turn up to Silverstone, they spread the

:37:10. > :37:15.love amongst all of the teams, even those who don't stand any chance of

:37:15. > :37:19.getting onto the podium this weekend. Ferrari have 15 pole

:37:19. > :37:23.position 's in Britain, more than any other team and they have more

:37:23. > :37:32.wins over the years. I do not think that will be repeated today. We will

:37:32. > :37:37.have two wait and see. She was looking timid when she was caught on

:37:37. > :37:42.camera. To establish himself as one of the top drivers, Nico Rosberg has

:37:42. > :37:45.really done at? He was not given credit for his I tried speed and

:37:45. > :37:50.people thought it was the magic carpet on the way through the lower

:37:50. > :37:54.ranks and then starting with Williams when they were not really

:37:54. > :37:59.doing a particularly strong job as a team, but his fastest lap at his

:37:59. > :38:03.first-ever Grand Prix in Bahrain and since then he has been looking for

:38:03. > :38:06.those big opportunities and quietly learning. Showing Michael Schumacher

:38:06. > :38:12.just how fast it was over one single lap and they were evenly matched on

:38:13. > :38:18.race pace. But he had the upper hand and Lewis Hamilton has been giving

:38:18. > :38:24.him full respect. Those qualifying tallies. 4-3 in favour of Lewis

:38:24. > :38:28.Hamilton. But Nico Rosberg got that victory in Monaco. Lewis Hamilton

:38:28. > :38:33.yet to achieve victory for this team but it is still relatively early

:38:33. > :38:39.days. Nico Rosberg knows it very well. Everything is looking good on

:38:39. > :38:42.this lap. This is a flying lap from him and the sector times,

:38:42. > :38:50.interestingly, Hamilton has gone quicker than Rosberg in that first

:38:50. > :39:00.sect or. The opening lap, Ricciardo is the fastest out there. For tenths

:39:00. > :39:01.

:39:01. > :39:08.slower than he managed in his previous best. He was on a used set.

:39:08. > :39:17.Nico Rosberg, to the end of the lap. Webber goes fastest. Setting the

:39:17. > :39:22.pace for this initial group. Rosberg. That is very rapid and Ian!

:39:22. > :39:29.That is faster than Webber. He took pole position a couple of years ago

:39:29. > :39:38.but Hamilton is going even faster! In both first and second sectors.

:39:38. > :39:44.Hamilton storming through the last corner and he goes fastest. 1: 30.0.

:39:44. > :39:52.What about Sebastian Vettel? He has the upright qualifying record. Back

:39:52. > :39:56.in 2010. 1: 29.6. We are nearly there, but not quite. But Hamilton

:39:56. > :40:03.is showing Rosberg a clean pair of heels on that first run. An

:40:03. > :40:11.impressive first attempt. We will see if they go again. Not want a

:40:11. > :40:15.ready smile too much! Analysing what was going on. And the quiet before

:40:15. > :40:23.the storm in the Lotus garage. They have used more tyres throughout the

:40:23. > :40:30.course of this qualifying today perhaps will only get one run at it.

:40:30. > :40:37.He is on the harder others compound tyres. He has done 1: 31.3. It will

:40:37. > :40:42.be interesting to see what he chooses to run on. They will have

:40:42. > :40:45.two start the race on their fastest qualifying tyres. And they might

:40:45. > :40:50.take a slightly different approach, they have to use both tyres during

:40:50. > :40:54.the Grand Prix. It is follow that. That is an interesting point because

:40:54. > :40:57.last year it was dry for the race but it was wet for qualifying and

:40:57. > :41:02.they have the option of which tyre to use and Fernando Alonso started

:41:02. > :41:08.on the harder tyre and Webber on the soft and Webber had the advantage by

:41:08. > :41:13.doing that. Usually, you won't have that choice. But every time you do

:41:13. > :41:17.in the dry qualifying, that is a tyre you must start on. Into the

:41:17. > :41:22.pits. But first very completed. The clock is ticking away, four minutes

:41:22. > :41:28.left to determine the grid. The top ten places, anyway. We know

:41:28. > :41:33.everything else beyond that. Just wailing that Mercedes sideways,

:41:33. > :41:43.pushing it back into the garage. see more of that. Not wanting to

:41:43. > :41:49.

:41:49. > :41:57.rule the tyres any more over concrete. -- wailing. Because you

:41:57. > :42:01.have fuel spills and things like that. Everybody is in the pits and

:42:01. > :42:07.no Jenson Button did not make top ten, he is the best of the rest so

:42:07. > :42:12.he will be the first driver to have the ability to choose what tyre to

:42:12. > :42:14.start on. And he will be on the clean side so Jenson Button starting

:42:14. > :42:19.outside top-10 but perhaps you will have the chance to score some points

:42:20. > :42:24.tomorrow but we are watching the build-up to the final battle in that

:42:24. > :42:28.top-10 contest. Kimi Raikkonen has yet to set a lap and he will only

:42:28. > :42:33.get one chance to do that. He is the first one out, being chased by

:42:33. > :42:40.Daniel Ricciardo. I think it was. Paul di Resta is also on his way

:42:40. > :42:44.out. It is such an advantage when you have a couple of sets of tyres

:42:44. > :42:48.to use because the drivers just get that little bit more feel? And does

:42:48. > :42:54.not get any better than this in driving terms. A new set of tyres

:42:54. > :43:02.going out on a circuit like Sobers Don, which is high-speed, and you

:43:02. > :43:05.just take the ultimate high-speed journey. -- Silverstone. He sits on

:43:05. > :43:10.top and he would love to be on pole position at the British Grand Prix

:43:10. > :43:17.again. It would be amazing. Stirling Moss achieved that honour back in

:43:17. > :43:21.the days when they alternated between Silverstone and injury and

:43:21. > :43:29.Stirling Moss achieved that and got pole position and went on to take

:43:29. > :43:33.victory and they had a great feature a couple of weeks back. I wonder if

:43:33. > :43:40.Lewis Hamilton will be able to emulate that great man? Only 1.5

:43:41. > :43:46.minutes to go. Do not discount the Australian. Pole position a couple

:43:46. > :43:50.of years ago. He knows what it takes. He has won here in most

:43:50. > :43:56.categories he has ever raised. It was the first track he drove on when

:43:56. > :44:01.he travelled from Australia to begin his European career. He knows this

:44:01. > :44:11.is his last qualifying attempt at Silverstone in Formula one. And I

:44:11. > :44:13.

:44:13. > :44:18.can relate to that. You just want to feel you have left nothing on the

:44:18. > :44:24.table. You have taken every opportunity. Kimi Raikkonen is the

:44:24. > :44:28.first to go. He was the first out of the pits. We shall see if he can get

:44:28. > :44:32.anywhere near the first couple of rows. He needs to be on the third

:44:32. > :44:36.row to have any chance in this race. I don't think he has a car that will

:44:36. > :44:41.qualify in the front two rows but on the third row, maybe he has a

:44:41. > :44:51.chance? Tidy enough onto that Wellington straight. Let us see his

:44:51. > :44:53.

:44:53. > :44:57.first sector. Little bit slower than Paul di Resta. As we can see Kimi

:44:57. > :45:03.Raikkonen, on board with Mark Webber. Into Brooklands. Immediately

:45:03. > :45:10.quicker. But by much. But every little bit helps. Very wide on the

:45:10. > :45:14.entry. Trying to get the car as straight as possible. Across the old

:45:14. > :45:23.start - finish straight. The chequered flag is odd. Red Bull

:45:23. > :45:27.looking for their 50th pole position. They have racked up a lot

:45:27. > :45:34.of pole positions in a short amount of time, but Hamilton has just gone

:45:34. > :45:44.fastest. Mark Webber was quick in the first sector as well. Vettel,

:45:44. > :45:44.

:45:44. > :45:52.not a good first sector. He is down on Hamilton and Webber. Mark Webber

:45:52. > :45:55.is going the fastest of the Red Bull cars. Through into the last corner.

:45:55. > :46:03.Mark Webber has not outqualified Vettel at all this year. But he does

:46:03. > :46:10.love Silverstone. Hamilton is going fast, faster than anybody else, in

:46:10. > :46:17.the fast -- first and now the second sector. Rosberg comes across the

:46:17. > :46:22.line. He goes fastest for the moment. He is quicker than Webber.

:46:22. > :46:30.Hamilton has surely got a bit more in hand. He has done it! Look at the

:46:30. > :46:35.lap time! I don't think Vettel has got an answer. Let's just check. No

:46:35. > :46:41.way he can do it. He qualifies in third place. Lewis Hamilton has

:46:41. > :46:46.indeed repeated the performance of Sir Stirling Moss to take pole

:46:46. > :46:51.position in the Silver Arrow at the British Grand Prix. It is his second

:46:51. > :46:55.pole position of the season. What an important one for him. It is the

:46:55. > :46:58.fifth pole position for that team this year. Again, all of the poles

:46:58. > :47:08.have been retained between Mercedes and Red Bull. But it is a Mercedes

:47:08. > :47:13.

:47:13. > :47:23.12. -- a Mercedes 1-2. It is an all red Bull second row. Paul di Resta

:47:23. > :47:23.

:47:23. > :47:29.was fifth. Storming job, Lewis, storming job. Simple enough. It was.

:47:29. > :47:34.What a margin, David. Brilliant qualifying. We saw him out waving at

:47:34. > :47:38.the beginning. We know that Lewis, in a happy place, is an incredibly

:47:38. > :47:43.quick racing driver. He has obviously build his confidence

:47:43. > :47:48.during the practice seconds and delivered for the home fans. A great

:47:48. > :47:56.performance from di Resta. Just an update on Alonso - he did get onto

:47:56. > :48:03.the auction tyre. Ferrari are just struggling for pace. He has ended up

:48:03. > :48:13.in 10th. That is a shock. The Lotus cars have been outqualified not only

:48:13. > :48:16.

:48:16. > :48:26.by Force Indias but by Toro Rosso. That is a fascinating top ten. Sutil

:48:26. > :48:37.

:48:37. > :48:41.Hamilton. He has taken his 28th career pole position. He has done it

:48:41. > :48:47.career pole position. He has done it on home turf. SUZI PERRY: And what a

:48:47. > :48:51.result for the fans. They were loving that. This is a perfect day

:48:51. > :48:57.for British motorsport fans. Not just Lewis on pole, at Paul di Resta

:48:57. > :49:03.in fifth. What a result for him. Absolutely. We thought it would be a

:49:03. > :49:07.shootout between the Mercedes team. It was fantastic for them. The fans

:49:07. > :49:14.will be happy because they like the fight with Vettel but they are not

:49:14. > :49:21.big fans of Vettel. That was a surprise because we thought you

:49:21. > :49:24.might get up to seventh or eighth. He has been looking good all

:49:24. > :49:30.weekend. We saw the fans cheering and looking pleased that one of

:49:30. > :49:33.their heroes is in pole position for his home Grand Prix. Rightly so.

:49:33. > :49:39.What an exciting session that was, Eddie.

:49:39. > :49:43.That is what I love about quote -- current qualifying. It really works.

:49:43. > :49:48.You never know until about a minute after the flag has dropped. That is

:49:48. > :49:52.the best thing. They have timing to perfection. They know when to get

:49:52. > :49:56.the maximum out of the car. Some people do one run. Some people do

:49:56. > :50:04.two runs. It is a fabulous programme. I love the format. He

:50:04. > :50:09.doesn't look happy, does he? But his man, Lewis Hamilton, he is gay to

:50:09. > :50:11.have a big fight tomorrow. Sebastian Vettel is very

:50:11. > :50:18.competitive. They have done so well here. Three out of four years

:50:18. > :50:21.winning, and on the fourth year they were on the podium. Definitely,

:50:21. > :50:28.Sebastian Vettel is always looking for the win.

:50:28. > :50:33.You can see the happiness there. People questioned the logic of Lewis

:50:33. > :50:41.leaving McLaren. Maybe he knew something that we didn't know. But

:50:41. > :50:49.he left at the right time. We often talk about the unified except. --

:50:49. > :50:54.the dignified accent. I do moment, Lewis is in a -- at the moment,

:50:54. > :51:01.Lewis is in a good place. What a stunning lap from Lewis

:51:01. > :51:07.Hamilton. It was. Conditions eased back a bit.

:51:07. > :51:13.But it was an impressive lap. his most impressive lap of the

:51:13. > :51:18.season so far? Probably, yes. He always said it would take time to

:51:18. > :51:23.settle in. He was a little unsettled. That may be because of

:51:23. > :51:26.blustery conditions. He understood that everybody was having

:51:26. > :51:32.difficulties yesterday. He worked away overnight and got the car where

:51:32. > :51:38.he wanted it. We are standing in fairly balmy conditions. The wind

:51:38. > :51:42.seems to have dropped. Did that help you in Q3? It did. It should have

:51:42. > :51:48.helped everyone. But the reason we had the capacity for the lap was the

:51:48. > :51:54.calmer conditions. What can we expect from you guys tomorrow?

:51:54. > :51:58.have worked hard this weekend to try to get up to it. It is going to be

:51:58. > :52:05.warmer again tomorrow. We're not comfortable, let's put it that way.

:52:05. > :52:10.We will see. SUZI PERRY: The British breeze has

:52:10. > :52:14.helped Lewis Hamilton today. Let's talk about tomorrow. Let's revel in

:52:15. > :52:22.the delight that Lewis Hamilton is in pole position at the Silverstone

:52:22. > :52:31.Grand Prix. What a treat. His decoy didn't work. We thought he was

:52:31. > :52:37.playing a game with us, daring us. He was saying he wasn't sure he

:52:37. > :52:42.would make it. But he did it with such a resounding style and panache.

:52:42. > :52:47.He just made it his. Anybody who came close he destroyed them. It was

:52:47. > :52:53.a fantastic performance. Let's hear from Christian Horner now talking

:52:53. > :52:57.about his Red Bull boys. You have locked out the second row

:52:57. > :53:01.of the grid. Disappointing? We could see this morning that the Mercedes

:53:01. > :53:08.were quick. Congratulations to Lewis. It was a big lap at the end.

:53:08. > :53:12.Our guys, to get both of them on the second row is a good place to start

:53:12. > :53:17.the Grand Prix. Hopefully we can take it today and tomorrow.

:53:17. > :53:21.surprised by the pace over one lap? We could see they were quick. This

:53:21. > :53:29.season, they have been quick. We hope we can take it to them in the

:53:29. > :53:32.Grand Prix tomorrow, though. How do you see tyre wear?

:53:32. > :53:40.It is going to be critical. It is going to be warmer tomorrow, which

:53:40. > :53:47.is nice. But, yeah, the strategy, tyre wear, the front left, left

:53:47. > :53:54.rear, let's stand -- left side of the car takes a hammering. Hopefully

:53:54. > :53:59.we will be in reasonable shape. Tyre wear is critical, as always.

:53:59. > :54:04.They have got something up their sleeve, haven't they? In a race

:54:04. > :54:08.condition, they have it all planned out. It will be hard to eat Red Bull

:54:08. > :54:14.in a race situation. Nevertheless, Mercedes are creeping up there,

:54:14. > :54:19.aren't they? They are easing their way in. Christian Horner has been

:54:19. > :54:22.quite vocal about the penalty for Mercedes. Now you can see why. He

:54:22. > :54:28.believes Mercedes have made a big step because of the testing. Leaving

:54:28. > :54:33.that aside, we are in for a big battle. We might be in for a classic

:54:33. > :54:40.race here tomorrow. Those four drivers, and Paul di Resta right on

:54:41. > :54:46.their tail, Italy Titanic. -- it could be Titanic. Jenson

:54:46. > :54:52.didn't quite make it through. But we can hear from him now. It was so

:54:52. > :54:57.close to you still being out there, but ultimately no McLaren in Q3.

:54:57. > :55:02.In a way, it is quite surprising with the way the car felt. It felt

:55:02. > :55:09.reasonably good. It was difficult to get the tyres working correctly in

:55:10. > :55:15.terms of temperature. Paul di Resta was able to go slow and we have to

:55:15. > :55:19.go hard. It is not great but it is a little less bad, is the right way to

:55:19. > :55:25.say it. If we had qualified in Q3 I think we would have been beaten

:55:25. > :55:31.anyway. We can choose what tyres we want to use. It is not so bad. I

:55:31. > :55:36.enjoyed driving the car out there. I think we are just dragging a lot. We

:55:36. > :55:41.are just not efficient, maybe. The car felt reasonably good.

:55:41. > :55:45.What a shame. He thought he was going to make it to Q3. There was

:55:45. > :55:48.every reason for him to be positive about where he was going to go.

:55:48. > :55:53.Still, the body language is not right. He is not bubbling, not

:55:53. > :55:57.excited. He did say that he enjoys driving a car, and that was the

:55:57. > :56:00.opposite of what he said in Canada. Let's hope they have made some

:56:00. > :56:06.progress there. Let's hear from the top three now.

:56:06. > :56:13.Lewis, a great lap at the end there. How good does it feel?

:56:13. > :56:18.It is incredible. It is just like it was in 2007. Just to see the crowd

:56:18. > :56:24.here today, it is fantastic, such a great turnout for everyone. That was

:56:24. > :56:28.a lap for them. I hope tomorrow we can do something special for them.

:56:28. > :56:32.This was really down to the team. They have been doing a phenomenal

:56:32. > :56:37.job, improving the car constantly. I have not been feeling 100%

:56:37. > :56:47.comfortable in the car all weekend, so I was happy to get a lap.

:56:47. > :56:49.

:56:49. > :56:58.Your thoughts on qualifying? It is definitely a great feeling to

:56:58. > :57:03.go into qualifying and having such a car. It is really cool. It was a

:57:03. > :57:06.great job that the team has done to get us to where we are now. We are

:57:06. > :57:10.also improving on Sundays, hopefully, and hoping we have

:57:10. > :57:14.improved. Tomorrow should be better. I'm sure there will be teams

:57:14. > :57:19.who I bit stronger than us, but maybe starting front is going be a

:57:19. > :57:27.help. There seemed to be some different

:57:27. > :57:32.tactics at late tomorrow -- at late tomorrow with your tyres. This is a

:57:32. > :57:40.tactical weekend, clearly. We will see what happens tomorrow.

:57:40. > :57:47.It is a long race. But we are happy today. Either Lewis found a shortcut

:57:47. > :57:52.or he has something special around here. It was not in reach today. I

:57:52. > :57:56.was happy with the lap at the end. It was close with Mark as well. We

:57:56. > :58:02.did what we could for the team. It is always nice to position well in

:58:02. > :58:06.qualifying. Qualifying here is good fun. I am enjoying the high-speed

:58:06. > :58:16.corners. Looking forward to tomorrow, for the race. We will see

:58:16. > :58:18.

:58:18. > :58:23.how we are with tyres, looking after them. For now, happy for the team.

:58:23. > :58:29.It is a good position to start from. Obviously, our factory is close to

:58:29. > :58:33.this track. Milton Keynes is not far away. Looking forward to tomorrow.

:58:33. > :58:37.Oh, I am looking forward to tomorrow as well. David is joining us now

:58:37. > :58:46.from the commentary box. Lewis Weir to rated that he had not been

:58:46. > :58:50.feeling comfortable. -- who is reiterated. He is a good actor.

:58:50. > :58:55.This circuit involves so much. It is possible he just was not in the zone

:58:55. > :58:59.yesterday. Today commit he has gained in confidence. We didn't get

:58:59. > :59:04.much chance to see this lap in commentary, but just watching here

:59:04. > :59:07.as he comes down into the opening as he comes down into the opening

:59:07. > :59:17.here. This is down through Farm. A small correction for oversteer. A

:59:17. > :59:22.

:59:22. > :59:28.bit of wheelspin. This is one of the DRS zones. An early turn, using the

:59:28. > :59:33.engine braking. Look out early he turns into Luffield. Again, so early

:59:33. > :59:40.on the power. I was waiting for a long pause, but absolute commitment

:59:40. > :59:46.and confidence. This will be in president, through Copse. Oh, wow.

:59:46. > :59:53.Fantastic. That is a real mammoth corner.

:59:53. > :59:58.And here through Becketts. Flat through the first two parts. Down

:59:58. > :00:05.onto Hangar Straight, he gets a chance to breathe. He is possibly

:00:05. > :00:10.reminiscing about his previous pole position here. A bit of understeer.

:00:10. > :00:20.He misses the apex slightly, but he gets away with it. It is where he

:00:20. > :00:25.

:00:25. > :00:30.gets away with it. It is where he will have known. Such an amazing

:00:30. > :00:39.track. Not so good news at the bottom of the top ten for Fernando

:00:39. > :00:48.Alonso. Disappointing day for you? Yes, I think we were not competitive

:00:48. > :00:53.all weekend and it is not normal to see one Ferrari out of 23. But we

:00:53. > :00:58.were not good enough today. The race is still very long and anything can

:00:58. > :01:03.happen and we will do our best to recover positions but it was a bad

:01:03. > :01:11.Saturday. Ferrari have been traditionally quite strong, are the

:01:11. > :01:17.others going forward? Well, I think we did not improve the car enough in

:01:17. > :01:26.the last five races and we have not new parts that perhaps did not

:01:26. > :01:35.deliver what we expected from them. Pirelli have chosen medium and hard

:01:35. > :01:40.continuously, and we know that only helps to teams and we need to work.

:01:40. > :01:47.Not very impressed with Pirelli? Though, that was a bit of a lap!

:01:47. > :01:54.Those teams are clearly Red Bull and Mercedes. So, a lot of people take

:01:54. > :01:58.credit from what he says and he is putting his little mark, we know

:01:58. > :02:05.what you're doing, Pirelli! Not just saving yourself under tyres, but

:02:05. > :02:10.make sure you look after Ferrari. Fernando knows that his words carry

:02:10. > :02:13.a reasonable amount of cloud and he will have said that behind closed

:02:13. > :02:21.doors and he has just delivered a message into the public domain. It

:02:21. > :02:28.is a very busy weekend on the BBC and if you are tennis -- are a

:02:28. > :02:32.tennis fan, Laura Robson is back on court and that follows us. She is

:02:32. > :02:36.flying the flag for ladies tennis and David Coulthard and Lewis

:02:36. > :02:41.Hamilton were flying the flag for British motor sport as they flew

:02:41. > :02:48.with the Red Arrows a few days ago. Here is just a little taste. This is

:02:48. > :02:58.something I have wanted to do for a very long time. Time for that top

:02:58. > :03:07.

:03:07. > :03:13.gun moment! This is the coolest thing I have ever done! That is what

:03:13. > :03:19.I am talking about! And you can see the rest of that feature tomorrow

:03:19. > :03:26.when we will be live from 12:10 p.m. On BBC One and this is all live on

:03:26. > :03:29.radio five live as well. What a day of qualifying. MotoGP is on the red

:03:29. > :03:33.Button but it is all about tomorrow, the British Grand Prix at
