:01:10. > :01:15.Paul di Resta flies out of his garage. He was fastest this morning
:01:15. > :01:18.in the session. This is pre-practice two, and if you joined us earlier,
:01:18. > :01:28.you will see that the weather has cleared up. The drivers are on the
:01:28. > :01:35.
:01:35. > :01:38.track, so let's get to it. All Cars are out on the circuit. The
:01:38. > :01:45.track is bone dry here in Montreal. We are looking forward to some great
:01:45. > :01:51.action here. Always a good crowd in Montreal. A few empty seats, ticket
:01:51. > :01:54.sales perhaps slightly more sluggish than they have been in recent years.
:01:54. > :02:01.But over 300,000 people were becoming through over the course of
:02:01. > :02:10.the three days the weekend. To Raikkonen has been the first to set
:02:10. > :02:14.a competitive time. Paul di Resta was an 1: 21.0. The track has dried
:02:14. > :02:21.out completely now. One or two puddles here, particularly on the
:02:22. > :02:24.acclaimed exit, but it looks as though turn on is dry. Absolutely.
:02:24. > :02:34.These drivers have to relearn the track because it is so different to
:02:34. > :02:36.
:02:37. > :02:46.this morning. Drivers are getting act limited to the track --
:02:47. > :03:00.
:03:00. > :03:08.acclimated. Look out for the plain black tyre of Pirelli. Speaking of
:03:08. > :03:12.tyres, Jenny has some news. Down here in the pitlane, Sergio Perez
:03:12. > :03:16.has been wheeled back into his garage. He was the only driver in
:03:16. > :03:26.the first session this morning to set a time on those tyres. But they
:03:26. > :03:26.
:03:26. > :03:31.have just sent him back out again on those tyres. They have a tripod
:03:31. > :03:36.system looking down at that time. You can tell that they are black and
:03:36. > :03:44.unmarked. You can tell which ones they are. Those are the development
:03:45. > :03:48.tyres. By my reckoning, we used about five of those this morning out
:03:48. > :03:54.of the 176 that they brought here. So there are still a fair few for
:03:54. > :03:59.them to get through today if they want to. My understanding is that
:03:59. > :04:03.they are harder compound that Pirelli brought here. But the idea
:04:03. > :04:13.is that it is a sure action aimed at trying to fix a problem we saw in
:04:13. > :04:15.
:04:15. > :04:25.the Bahrain and Spanish Grand Prix of tyre delamination. There has been
:04:25. > :04:27.
:04:27. > :04:33.discussion in the paddock over the lunch break over what tyre it is.
:04:33. > :04:36.The development tyres, originally Pirelli wanted to bring them here to
:04:36. > :04:40.race, but after all the disagreements in Monaco over the
:04:40. > :04:45.Mercedes test on Pirelli, they decided to take a decision to run
:04:45. > :04:55.the old tyres here and evaluate the new ones. Can you shed some light on
:04:55. > :05:03.
:05:03. > :05:10.its? They have put another pair of rear development tyres on the car.
:05:10. > :05:18.They are different construction, as you say. The current slick tyre is a
:05:18. > :05:24.steel construction. It changes the bonding agent between the tread and
:05:24. > :05:33.the carcass of the tyre. But most of these teams are looking to see what
:05:33. > :05:36.aerodynamic influence they have. McLaren have tried the development
:05:36. > :05:45.version up front, which is theoretically the same time as they
:05:45. > :05:53.are running currently. It is interesting, the depths they go to
:05:53. > :05:56.these days to get the best. mentioned that they are scheduled to
:05:56. > :06:00.get the competitive introduction at Silverstone, but it is not sure that
:06:00. > :06:06.that will happen, because the teams are going well on the existing 2013
:06:06. > :06:11.tyres. They don't want to change the tyres. They want to stay with what
:06:11. > :06:14.they started the season with. Lotus believe they have good tyres, and
:06:14. > :06:19.they don't believe it is right to change them midway through the
:06:19. > :06:24.season. Alexander, it is interesting that Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull
:06:24. > :06:30.start talking about safety being the main reason why we need these new
:06:30. > :06:33.tyres. Once again, the tyres are becoming a political football.
:06:33. > :06:40.Absolutely. In Formula One, there is always something going on in terms
:06:40. > :06:44.of a bit of drama. I can tell you from driving on the tyre that it is
:06:44. > :06:54.a difficult tyre and I understand the respect that some cars may be
:06:54. > :06:57.
:06:57. > :07:01.struggling with it, just because the tyre is so sensitive. The fact that
:07:01. > :07:04.Red Bull are blaming it on a safety issue, there might be something to
:07:04. > :07:10.say about that with the tyre delamination is we have had in the
:07:10. > :07:16.past. It is nothing specific to this year's tyre. There are two sides to
:07:16. > :07:20.the story. We certainly don't want to see any more delamination is. It
:07:20. > :07:24.is bad for the image of the sport and certainly bad for the image of
:07:24. > :07:28.Pirelli. The people who want to maintain the status quo would say
:07:28. > :07:33.that in none of these delaminations has the tyre deflated. It has stayed
:07:33. > :07:40.in faded and the driver has been able to get back to the pits. So
:07:40. > :07:47.there is a question as to how you define safe. Some of the
:07:47. > :07:51.delaminations were made different by the team because there was no rubber
:07:51. > :07:57.left on the tyre. Lewis Hamilton, missing the apex of the second
:07:57. > :08:07.chicane. He managed to get back onto the track. Mark Webber heads the
:08:07. > :08:10.
:08:10. > :08:16.time sheet after ten minutes. Hamilton was on the fastest first
:08:16. > :08:21.sector of anybody so far when he made a mistake. There is the
:08:21. > :08:25.patrician face of the Mercedes team boss, must draw on. He seems very
:08:25. > :08:29.calm this weekend. He is certainly willing to talk. He has been open
:08:29. > :08:39.about certain aspects of the test that happened with the Pirelli tyres
:08:39. > :08:39.
:08:39. > :08:43.in Barcelona in mid-May, just after the Spanish Grand Prix. The FIA has
:08:43. > :08:47.summoned him to appear before the international tribunal. He says that
:08:47. > :08:53.will happen sometime in the next few weeks. Mercedes say that will be the
:08:53. > :09:02.opportunity to tell their side of the story. Looking at Mark Webber's
:09:02. > :09:09.Red Bull, I mentioned the Day-glo paint around the rear part, between
:09:09. > :09:12.the rear wheels of the car. They will be measuring the airflow from
:09:12. > :09:20.that one. The car would be cutting 200 miles an hour at this point, and
:09:20. > :09:25.they will get an idea of how the new parts they fitted to the rear of
:09:25. > :09:30.that Red Bull are working. The team will take photographs of those and
:09:30. > :09:34.then wipe the parts clear and send the car back out again. Lewis
:09:34. > :09:39.Hamilton is now on the early part of a lap. Looks like a flat on the
:09:39. > :09:46.right front of Paul di Resta as he almost goes into the wall of
:09:46. > :09:53.champions and starts another lap. He was quickest this morning. Carrying
:09:53. > :10:00.on from what you were saying about the Day-glo paint, it is quite
:10:00. > :10:06.ingenious, because normally we see the teams covering the front with
:10:06. > :10:13.that Day-glo paint. The airflow then washes that Day-glo paint to where
:10:13. > :10:22.it goes on the car. In Red Bull's case, it is going on the brake
:10:22. > :10:29.locks. They have a windscreen washer bottle, so they can press a button
:10:29. > :10:36.and released that fluid and get the airflow at 240 kilometres an hour
:10:36. > :10:39.rather than at 60 or 70 kilometres an hour. You try and understand the
:10:39. > :10:46.car more, but you want to understand it at certain speeds to make the
:10:46. > :10:55.best. That paint to settle, so it does not give you the real
:10:55. > :11:03.information. For me, that is amazing. It is difficult to
:11:03. > :11:06.correlate how much the paint is coming off, because as you lead --
:11:06. > :11:12.leave the lane, it does settle. So trust Red Bull to come up with
:11:12. > :11:17.something clever. The teams will be using that quickly. I will
:11:17. > :11:20.definitely be telling Caterham about that. It is a classic example of the
:11:20. > :11:25.innovation at work in Formula One. Of course, the resources are quite
:11:25. > :11:29.nice to have as well, but it does not sound expensive. It is more
:11:29. > :11:33.about having the ingenuity to pull it off. Quite a lot of drivers
:11:33. > :11:37.missing breaking points. Everyone is pushing hard because the grip level
:11:37. > :11:41.has changed on the racing services this morning. A lot of drivers are
:11:41. > :11:50.missing apex is not just on the development tyre, but also on this
:11:50. > :11:55.medium tyre. Is that just drivers finding the limit? I think so. This
:11:55. > :12:00.Montreal circuit is always known as very low grip. It is difficult to
:12:00. > :12:07.build type temperature. It is a similar characteristic to Monaco. We
:12:07. > :12:15.are running the same compounds here. The teams have some idea of what to
:12:15. > :12:23.expect, but it is difficult to gauge temperatures, considering it rained
:12:23. > :12:27.all morning. We are approaching the quarter hour mark in this second
:12:27. > :12:36.free practice session, ahead of Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix. Sergio
:12:36. > :12:41.Perez closes the DRS wing. You are allowed to use it in the same zones
:12:41. > :12:45.during practice and qualifying that UI allowed to use it in the race.
:12:45. > :12:49.You can use it in the long Main Street that leads down to the final
:12:49. > :12:54.chicane, and then you are allowed a second bite of the cherry along the
:12:54. > :12:58.pit straight. Some would argue that Canada of all circuits is a place
:12:58. > :13:03.where you don't need an DRS zone, because it is easy to overtake
:13:03. > :13:09.anywhere. Absolute key, any track where there are big braking zones,
:13:09. > :13:12.it will be easy to overtake. The one thing about DRS and how it is
:13:12. > :13:17.different from last year is that as a driver, I don't refer it, because
:13:17. > :13:25.last year you were doing more things while driving because you had to
:13:25. > :13:28.open the DRS as you came round the corner. Now, you almost have to wait
:13:28. > :13:33.until you get to point, and then you can open it again. You are always
:13:33. > :13:37.having to think, make sure I crossed the line and open it. It not
:13:37. > :13:42.automatic any more. From my said of things, it is a bit fresh rating,
:13:42. > :13:48.but I am sure you get used to it. Another thing that rewards the
:13:48. > :13:58.multitasker in Formula One. The first female driver coming in can't
:13:58. > :13:59.
:13:59. > :14:06.come soon enough in that respect. Paul di Resta fastest at this stage.
:14:06. > :14:11.Felipe Massa now second. Fernando Alonso exits the final corner and
:14:11. > :14:21.comes through to complete another lap, just over half a second slower
:14:21. > :14:24.
:14:24. > :14:34.than the second. Max Chilton going along reasonably nicely in the
:14:34. > :14:34.
:14:34. > :14:38.Marussia. Jules Bianchi is recovering from that incident where
:14:38. > :14:43.his gearbox had a problem when he tried to put it into reverse. It is
:14:43. > :14:46.interesting looking at the red wills, Sebastian Vettel with yet
:14:46. > :14:51.another tinge of helmet design, looking more like a drinks scan
:14:51. > :14:56.every day. Vettel has been on pole here a couple of days, but Red Bull
:14:56. > :15:06.seem to struggle at this track to translate pole position into
:15:06. > :15:08.
:15:08. > :15:16.winning. They have never won in Montreal. Why is that? In Other cars
:15:16. > :15:21.have had better race pace than the Red Bull. Red Bull has not always
:15:21. > :15:24.had the best race pace. Other cars have been able to push and do the
:15:24. > :15:29.undercut in terms of pitstop strategy. I think another notable
:15:30. > :15:33.thing is the fact that neither Nico Rosberg Lewis have been outqualified
:15:33. > :15:39.by their team-mate here so it will be interesting to see who gets the
:15:39. > :15:45.better of Mercedes because both of them have points to prove. Massa is
:15:45. > :15:50.fastest, Alonso and Sutil, let's go down to the pit lane and hear from
:15:50. > :15:56.Jenny and Gary. Della Bobbin we were talking about development tyres.
:15:56. > :16:00.What the teams will be getting for, the least they can expect to do is
:16:00. > :16:08.about 20 laps to get some accurate information because that is the
:16:08. > :16:13.race? Yes, they are looking for tyre degradation. You are looking at this
:16:13. > :16:20.distance -- stiffness of the tyre. That means the stiffness of the
:16:20. > :16:25.tyre, if it is softer, it will change the characteristics. When the
:16:25. > :16:32.tyre has deflected more its profile changes. Those are the two main
:16:32. > :16:37.things. The other important thing is how it dissipates across the tread.
:16:37. > :16:43.The problem we have had so far is it has not dissipated the temperature
:16:43. > :16:47.well between tender and the compound and they are trying to get into the
:16:48. > :16:53.carcass of the tyre quicker. When it comes to the make-up of the car, you
:16:53. > :16:59.have the floor, things that could get in the way of the tyre.
:16:59. > :17:04.detail of the tyre around the floor is important. If the tyre has a
:17:04. > :17:08.different profile it will change the detail of the floor. They want to
:17:09. > :17:14.recognise the tyre change and go back to it at the factory. The whole
:17:14. > :17:17.question of whether you should, even if you could, whether you should
:17:17. > :17:21.change tyre specifications halfway through the seasons, it is a big
:17:21. > :17:24.talking point this weekend and in the days that follow this weekend
:17:24. > :17:30.before Silverstone. It is a hot talking point going into the British
:17:30. > :17:36.Grand Prix. I know that Lotus and Force India are very reluctant to
:17:36. > :17:40.support the mid-season tyre change. You can understand why. They have a
:17:40. > :17:43.vested interest in it. They are the two teams that have engineered the
:17:43. > :17:45.best to operate with the tyres we started the season with. It was the
:17:45. > :17:51.same for everybody at the beginning of the year. They have engineered
:17:51. > :17:55.their cars. It is important to work on that side of the car as it is to
:17:55. > :17:58.have the best class leading aerodynamics. It is a difficult,
:17:58. > :18:03.such -- philosophical decision. It appears it is possible for the teams
:18:03. > :18:08.to filibuster, if you like, to lock it, to hold off the introduction of
:18:08. > :18:13.the tyres and it will get hotter topic of this weekend and the weeks
:18:13. > :18:19.that followed go on. Massa is fastest on the development tire. He
:18:19. > :18:24.has gone into the pit lane, come back out again. We will see what
:18:24. > :18:29.kind of tyres he is on in a moment. Di Resta is second, Webber third,
:18:29. > :18:37.Perez force, that all fifth, sixth in the pits is Fernando Alonso. He
:18:37. > :18:41.was using a set of development tyres. Sutil is seventh after a good
:18:41. > :18:48.run in Monaco. He needed that. Mark Webber looks like he has had a spin.
:18:48. > :18:56.Which chicane is that? Turn six. It is the second chicane. Turn six and
:18:56. > :19:01.seven, the left-hander. Leading down to the third chicane, the one that
:19:01. > :19:06.leads into the hairpin. It is a very strange circuit. Let's look at what
:19:06. > :19:11.happened to Webber. He got too hot on the brakes. He made the
:19:11. > :19:17.transition to the right side of the track very late and it may have
:19:17. > :19:24.locked the rear tyres. He was lucky. He was just a bit slow to get back
:19:24. > :19:29.to the right and maybe braked too late. It shows you how far I'm --
:19:29. > :19:33.find the margins. It looks like it is something anybody could do at any
:19:33. > :19:38.moment yet it was enough to swing the back of the car out. You are
:19:38. > :19:42.dancing on ice. Absolutely. It is exaggerated right now with the track
:19:42. > :19:47.conditions as we talked about and the core temperatures and also
:19:48. > :19:52.because of the development tyre. Last year's tyre, the rear tyres
:19:52. > :19:56.were weaker so it is possible the Red Bull may be struggling to make
:19:56. > :20:02.it work and may have oversteer. Simple things like that can happen.
:20:02. > :20:05.On a normal track it is not a big deal but whether walls are so close
:20:05. > :20:14.it can be sketchy. Alexander Rossi, development driver for the catering
:20:14. > :20:18.team who was out there this morning. Let's get a response from Gary.
:20:18. > :20:25.I am here. Just looking at the back of Jenson Button. A lot of work has
:20:25. > :20:28.gone on in that area. Jenny has more idea than me. We are stood at the
:20:28. > :20:33.front of the McLaren garage and they have got what you can see at the
:20:33. > :20:37.moment, a very large, purple Love light that shines down. They are
:20:38. > :20:44.looking at the rear wing and the exhaust. That is a UV light, which
:20:44. > :20:50.will reflect what is happening in the paint that has been daubed on
:20:50. > :20:57.the back. Yes, everyone is taking pictures, there was spray around
:20:57. > :21:01.from the wet curbs. They make it stand out and get better pictures.
:21:01. > :21:07.They are trying to understand what the airflow is doing and trying to
:21:08. > :21:13.make sure that the modelling they do offer car accurate so all this stuff
:21:13. > :21:18.is about gathering as much data as possible. Watching his car come in,
:21:18. > :21:24.looking at the result, it was pretty messy. Alexander will tell you, if
:21:24. > :21:29.you lose -- if you use it normally, it comes in is a big mess. It is
:21:29. > :21:33.difficult to see anything out of it. Gary, spell out for us, all the work
:21:33. > :21:37.going on, the incredible technology and innovation and ultraviolet light
:21:37. > :21:41.and all the rest of it, how much, what kind of gain are they hoping to
:21:42. > :21:50.make here with the things they are testing out? Against a stopwatch,
:21:50. > :21:56.what is it worth? Each team, goes into every meeting thinking they can
:21:56. > :22:01.find attends the second. A 10th of a second, you are looking at
:22:01. > :22:06.aerodynamic force and that 10th of a second would be 12 or 14 telegrams
:22:06. > :22:11.of downforce, more downforce on the car without any drag. If you could
:22:11. > :22:16.find that every weekend, every Grand Prix, that extra 12 or 14 kilograms,
:22:16. > :22:19.you would go about one tenth of a second faster. McLaren is looking at
:22:19. > :22:25.where they have gone wrong, they have to find the problem before they
:22:25. > :22:31.can fix the problem. As opposed to just keep developing what is a good
:22:31. > :22:35.package. It is different, what each team is trying to achieve. McLaren,
:22:35. > :22:42.understanding, Red Bull and Mercedes and Lotus, about trying to find the
:22:42. > :22:45.10th of a second. It is a moving target, working in Montreal because
:22:45. > :22:47.this is the circuit and season that has the biggest temperature
:22:48. > :22:52.fluctuations between the lowest temperatures and the highest
:22:52. > :22:56.temperatures. It can be anything between 15 degrees and 35 degrees
:22:56. > :23:02.here and it can change from day to day. If you get one of the apps on
:23:02. > :23:06.your phone and put it on mock -- on Montreal, you will see an enormous
:23:06. > :23:09.fluctuation in temperature. That is reflected in the tech -- track
:23:09. > :23:14.temperatures, which makes it a difficult track for the engineers to
:23:14. > :23:17.figure out what is going on and how you need to set up the car. It is
:23:17. > :23:21.one thing they talk about, a frustrating place here. But when you
:23:21. > :23:26.get it right it can be very rewarding. It is something McLaren
:23:26. > :23:29.have specialised in down the years. Winners of the last three
:23:29. > :23:34.consecutive Montreal Grand Prix is, fine -- partly thanks to Lewis
:23:34. > :23:39.Hamilton who is a specialist around this rain track -- racetrack. The
:23:39. > :23:43.other was in the pouring rain in 2011, Jenson Button, the four our
:23:43. > :23:49.Grand Prix where he passed Sebastian Vettel on the final lap in the
:23:49. > :23:55.extraordinary day when it rained on the heels of Notre Dame. Approaching
:23:55. > :24:03.the half-hour mark in the second free practice session. We are with
:24:03. > :24:10.you, Felipe Massey leads the way. -- Felipe Massa. And it is Paul di
:24:10. > :24:17.Resta, Sergio Perez, four tenths of a second off the benchmark of Massa.
:24:17. > :24:21.He has never had a win here, Felipe Massa. Vettel is fifth, Alonso
:24:21. > :24:25.sixth, Sutil seventh, Hamilton eighth, on a quick lap at the
:24:26. > :24:30.moment, Lewis Hamilton. We will look and see his time Massey comes across
:24:30. > :24:36.the line now. This should take him fastest. It does not, his final
:24:36. > :24:39.sector a bit of a disappointment. Let's hear from Jenny, with
:24:39. > :24:45.Ferrari's third driver, Pedro de la Rosa. Not the weather we were hoping
:24:45. > :24:52.for, we would have liked it drier. You have new parts on the car. A new
:24:52. > :24:58.front wing? Yes, they are so limited in the dry conditions and even
:24:58. > :25:02.though the track, it gets better and better every lap, we'd need the
:25:02. > :25:09.first run, trying to new tyres and now we are changing the front
:25:09. > :25:14.wearing -- front wing as well. It was specific for Canada, needing to
:25:14. > :25:19.drive it before tomorrow. They are getting ready to send out Fernando
:25:19. > :25:23.Alonso one medium tyres. It will get loud. What is the general mood for
:25:23. > :25:31.Ferrari? You have had a couple of results, in Monaco, it did not go as
:25:31. > :25:38.you would have hoped? Monaco was strange because we were not
:25:38. > :25:44.expecting it, not what we expected, but Canada is very different. It is
:25:44. > :25:49.a new aero package, that downforce level is different and we have a car
:25:49. > :25:53.on the straight, so this is one of our biggest and strongest points. We
:25:53. > :25:58.were surprised about Monaco. We don't know why, we just need to work
:25:58. > :26:06.a little bit harder on the areas we are weak and obviously on ago is one
:26:06. > :26:10.of these types of tracks, it is not our best. You can hear a car firing
:26:10. > :26:13.up in the background. Talk to me about the tyres. I believe you had a
:26:14. > :26:18.test on one of the older cars that Ferrari had and you with a driver
:26:18. > :26:28.who tested out the tyres. What did you learn? The test was OK, the
:26:28. > :26:28.
:26:28. > :26:32.Mercedes one has to go to a tribunal but yours was all right? No, I don't
:26:32. > :26:37.really understand if it is all right or not. We were not really testing
:26:37. > :26:43.any tyres but it is a situation with the FIA, something for them to
:26:43. > :26:48.resolve. It is not for us to comment or resolve, we are doing the best
:26:48. > :26:53.possible job at Monaco. Thank you, Pedro. An interesting answer from
:26:53. > :26:56.Pedro de la Rosa, he was not expecting that, was he? Ferrari have
:26:56. > :27:02.not said who the driver was who did the test, which took place before
:27:02. > :27:07.the Spanish Grand Prix that Fernando Alonso one, in a Ferrari. They
:27:07. > :27:13.definitely used a 2011 car, which is within the sporting regulations, you
:27:13. > :27:16.are allowed to test with a two -year-old car. There is very little
:27:16. > :27:21.you can learn from it. I am delighted to say that the team
:27:21. > :27:26.principal of Mercedes is joining us from the Mercedes pit wall. A great
:27:26. > :27:28.initiative for him to do that. I am glad at least it is dry for this
:27:28. > :27:33.afternoon. You have seen Lewis Hamilton, your driver, set the
:27:33. > :27:41.fastest time on a set of tyres that was six laps old. It looks like it
:27:41. > :27:47.is going well? Yes, it is pretty cold and getting the tyres up to
:27:47. > :27:54.temperature is a big issue at the moment. It is pretty bumpy. The
:27:54. > :27:58.lower level of downforce, just settling in. It is a typical track,
:27:58. > :28:02.we were just saying, for the engineers. The temperatures
:28:02. > :28:08.fluctuate a lot and there is a lot of track improvement over the course
:28:08. > :28:11.of the weekend. Tell us what a moving target this places? Yes, it
:28:11. > :28:19.is. We know the sort of balance changes that generally involve over
:28:19. > :28:25.the few days, so it is not a track we use very much, but we need to see
:28:25. > :28:32.what it is like when we get off to the other tyre. The front tyre has a
:28:32. > :28:35.low wear rate and there is not a lot of rubber going down. It will be
:28:35. > :28:42.quite an evolution but the key thing is making sure you are out there all
:28:42. > :28:45.the time. If you miss, you will hurt yourself. Is give the viewers and
:28:45. > :28:48.listeners an understanding of what you are trying to get through in a
:28:48. > :28:51.session like this afternoon? The conditions hopefully are more or
:28:52. > :28:59.less the same, it is the same time of day of the Grand Prix on Sunday
:28:59. > :29:03.so what would you hope to achieve in this 90 minutes? Primarily focused
:29:03. > :29:09.on the race. You will see we're not there yet but you will see ourselves
:29:09. > :29:14.and others will start to increase the fuel load. They will start to
:29:14. > :29:18.check out all the systems at the higher fuel load, brakes article
:29:18. > :29:25.here. The writer writes, that sort of thing. It increases the fuel
:29:25. > :29:32.load. Really starting on Rhys Webb. I think these days because of the
:29:32. > :29:35.nature of the tyres, everybody is focused on on race work and the
:29:35. > :29:41.qualifying gets picked up as best you can afterwards. It is getting
:29:41. > :29:44.the car right for the race. The conditions we have at the moment are
:29:44. > :29:50.not what we were expecting on Sunday, we were expecting it to be
:29:50. > :29:55.warmer on Sunday. The engineers will have two sift through a lot of
:29:55. > :29:59.adjustments of what we have learnt today to Sunday. Saturday is not a
:29:59. > :30:03.high fuel they normally. It is getting ready for qualifying. Today
:30:03. > :30:09.is the race prep. Lewis Hamilton sets a new fastest time and Gary
:30:09. > :30:13.Anderson has a question for you. of the things that Lewis has been
:30:13. > :30:17.saying, he has not comes to terms with yet is the breaking on the car
:30:17. > :30:27.and this is one of those circuits where it is vitally important. You
:30:27. > :30:27.
:30:27. > :30:32.trying to do anything on that? How are you trying to understand it?
:30:32. > :30:36.are trying to understand the dynamics of the system. So not major
:30:36. > :30:44.things at the moment. We moved over to different weight material this
:30:44. > :30:50.year. -- different brake material. Perhaps the team are getting used to
:30:50. > :30:57.that as well. Some subtle changes that will help, I hope, to make it
:30:57. > :31:02.more comfortable. Does that mean you are running two different brake
:31:02. > :31:07.set-ups, one for Nico Rosberg and then the new material for Lewis?
:31:07. > :31:17.Know, in fact, once we tried the new material with Nico Rosberg, he was
:31:17. > :31:23.
:31:23. > :31:28.happy with that as well. They are a bit different. We want them both
:31:28. > :31:38.happy. We appreciate you taking time to talk to us. We will let you get
:31:38. > :31:43.
:31:43. > :31:48.back on with your work. So, Hamilton is fastest at 1: 15.62. Massa is
:31:48. > :31:58.second for Ferrari, a time set earlier in the session. Nico Rosberg
:31:58. > :32:07.
:32:07. > :32:17.is third. Giedo van der Garde is the fastest of the so-called new teams,
:32:17. > :32:19.
:32:19. > :32:23.if you like. We were talking about Hamilton, Alexander Rossi, and
:32:23. > :32:26.braking. It was interesting, listening to Ross, that they have
:32:26. > :32:33.managed to chew the car into something that Hamilton had not
:32:33. > :32:36.requested, and Nico Rosberg is learning to deal with that as well.
:32:36. > :32:46.I was a bit surprised to hear that they had changed the brake material
:32:46. > :32:55.
:32:55. > :32:58.on both cars. It seems that Ross said it was a better option. But I
:32:58. > :33:07.do know the different brake materials that are available are
:33:07. > :33:11.very different. So to get those two at their maximum can be tricky.
:33:11. > :33:15.of the problems is that there are a lot of exclusive deals that go on
:33:15. > :33:18.between teams and suppliers. If you move from one team to another as
:33:19. > :33:22.Hamilton did, you can't go back to the brake material you used with
:33:22. > :33:27.your previous team, because they have an exclusive agreement with
:33:27. > :33:36.their supplier. Talking of rape material, one of Lewis's
:33:36. > :33:46.characteristics of driving, I have seen the brake trace of Lewis's
:33:46. > :33:47.
:33:47. > :33:55.car. He does really use the brakes in that first part. Other drivers
:33:55. > :33:58.let the car settle itself a bit. The way Rosberg drives the car, I can
:33:58. > :34:05.understand why he would have a wider tolerance of what he wanted from the
:34:05. > :34:14.brakes than Lewis. Lewis will say himself that he is one of the latest
:34:14. > :34:17.breakers, so that does change the characteristics. From a driver's
:34:17. > :34:21.perspective on Alexander, do you like to stand on the brakes
:34:21. > :34:28.straightaway, or are you more progressive with the brake pedal?
:34:28. > :34:31.The way Formula One cars work, you do have to have a certain amount of
:34:31. > :34:41.very high peak pressure. How high that goes varies from driver to
:34:41. > :34:41.
:34:41. > :34:46.drive. Heikki Kovalainen did not do it as much last year, for example.
:34:46. > :34:50.You can make both ways work. But that is why there are different
:34:50. > :34:59.materials to be maximised by different drivers. On some tracks,
:34:59. > :35:05.being able to jump on the pedal heavily is a big benefit. But when
:35:05. > :35:10.you come to a track where there are not very big stops, like Monaco, the
:35:10. > :35:15.softer approach may be better. Without doubt, Hamilton has been
:35:15. > :35:19.coming to terms with it. One of the problems has been getting the tyres
:35:19. > :35:29.to the perfect temperature to start qualifying. That was big story in
:35:29. > :35:32.
:35:32. > :35:37.Monte Carlo. We are talking very fine margins here, but that is all
:35:37. > :35:40.it takes for these Pirellis to lose a 10th of a second. That was what
:35:40. > :35:46.handed the initiative to Rosberg. He has never been out qualified four
:35:46. > :35:53.times in a row by a team-mate, Lewis Hamilton. He is on three at the
:35:53. > :35:59.moment. Who will get the upper hand? We are looking at Adrian Sutil
:35:59. > :36:03.taking off, flying through the air. No frying parts that we can see, but
:36:03. > :36:08.he has certainly taken a bit of paint of the top of the curb as the
:36:08. > :36:12.car gets airborne, all four wheels off the ground. Probably a foot off
:36:12. > :36:16.the ground. You can see everything bouncing and clattering like a
:36:16. > :36:22.cartoon car as it hits the road again and all four wheels come back
:36:22. > :36:27.into contact. There are a few bits of detritus left behind. That will
:36:27. > :36:30.have shaken his fillings! Yeah, I can't explain how much of a headache
:36:30. > :36:35.you get when you have a takeoff like that. I would be very surprised if
:36:35. > :36:40.the left rear suspension did not take a hit with that. When you saw
:36:40. > :36:45.the car land again, the ex-mount of extension on the left rear corner
:36:45. > :36:54.was massive. It is such a jarring effect, because the cars are so is
:36:54. > :36:57.this. You are very much advised to keep it on the ground. We are
:36:57. > :37:01.approaching the 40 minute mark in this second practice session.
:37:01. > :37:07.Sebastian Vettel is out on the supersoft part, the one that will be
:37:07. > :37:12.the qualifying tyre for tomorrow afternoon in the first stint for the
:37:12. > :37:18.top ten cars on the grid. Sebastian Vettel has twice been in poll
:37:18. > :37:22.position. Goes a bit late into the hairpin. Just 45 miles an hour at
:37:22. > :37:32.the apex of that hairpin, where a lot of fans in Montreuil like to
:37:32. > :37:36.
:37:36. > :37:43.cluster. They have seen some spectacular action. -- in Montreal.
:37:43. > :37:49.He crosses the line to go fastest. It was not a perfect lap by
:37:49. > :37:54.Sebastian Vettel, but enough to take him to the top of the timesheets.
:37:54. > :38:04.is clear that the supersoft tyre will be substantially quicker,
:38:04. > :38:07.
:38:07. > :38:17.especially when the temperatures seem to be true. There is a lot of
:38:17. > :38:23.
:38:23. > :38:31.time to be found between the tyres this weekend. Generally speaking,
:38:31. > :38:36.they do a long one to simulate the first stint of the Grand Prix. It
:38:36. > :38:41.could be one of those Grand Prix is where the cars are a bit more gentle
:38:41. > :38:44.on the tyres. The notices are able to make this race into stops,
:38:44. > :38:48.whereas the ones that are more aggressive on the tyre like Mercedes
:38:48. > :38:58.and Red Bull are obliged to do three. That was part of the story
:38:58. > :39:08.
:39:08. > :39:17.last year. Here is Webber. The lap time is quicker than expected.
:39:17. > :39:24.this supersoft tyre is one second quicker. Jennie is by the garage.
:39:24. > :39:31.This year, Sauber are in trouble. Nico Hulkenberg was on the radio
:39:31. > :39:35.earlier, saying that they are still throttling like hell on the KERS. He
:39:35. > :39:42.was not happy earlier and he is certainly not happy now. They have
:39:42. > :39:47.decided to change the brakes over. It is going to take quite a while.
:39:47. > :39:51.It is similar to what you would do at home when changing over the brake
:39:51. > :39:57.pads and discs. They are trying to give Nico Hulkenberg a better feel.
:39:57. > :40:01.At the moment, he must be ruined the day he signed paper and pen and went
:40:01. > :40:05.from one garage to the other. He moved from Force India to Sauber,
:40:05. > :40:10.and now Force India are celebrating their 100th Grand Prix this weekend
:40:10. > :40:14.and going well, whereas Sauber are nowhere. Force India have scored
:40:14. > :40:24.points in all but one Grand Prix this season, and that was not really
:40:24. > :40:25.
:40:25. > :40:33.their fault. 44 points on the board. All the rest has been particularly
:40:33. > :40:36.consistent in point-scoring. Sauber just have five world championship
:40:36. > :40:40.wins. It was here last year that Sergio Perez used very good strategy
:40:41. > :40:45.and smooth driving to get himself on the podium. A better entry for
:40:45. > :40:51.Webber to the hairpin, although he did have some traffic to navigate.
:40:51. > :41:01.Is he going to beat his team-mate on this lap? Sebastian Vettel has
:41:01. > :41:04.
:41:04. > :41:11.already set a time of 1: 15.37. This Canadian Grand Prix is not one of
:41:11. > :41:21.his favourites. It is a Red Bull 1-2 at the moment, the two of them using
:41:21. > :41:22.
:41:23. > :41:32.this supersoft tyre. Simon Rennie, his new engineer, tells Mark Webber
:41:33. > :41:37.
:41:37. > :41:41.some information. Kimi Raikkonen is tucked up right behind his friend.
:41:41. > :41:48.They could be team-mates next year if you believe the stories going
:41:48. > :41:56.around the paddock. It seemed that Sebastian lost four tenths of a
:41:56. > :42:02.second in the final sector coming up on Kimi. But that just proves the
:42:02. > :42:08.evolution of the track. That was what Ross Brawn was telling us
:42:08. > :42:14.about. It is colder day-to-day, and the track is improving. All day
:42:14. > :42:23.long, they have been going back and forth on the new development. See
:42:23. > :42:28.this forward element with the curve on it. If you look at the other side
:42:28. > :42:34.of the wing, you will see how many slots there are. They allow out of
:42:34. > :42:37.flow-through to try to keep the wind working consistently. That is
:42:37. > :42:42.important on this circuit. Also back on the sideboard, there is a big
:42:42. > :42:47.back hall. You will see this horizontal wing popping into a
:42:48. > :42:54.vertical wing section. That is again to try and tidy up the airflow. It
:42:54. > :43:04.is all for efficiency. This is the first time they have had all these
:43:04. > :43:05.
:43:06. > :43:14.bits on one car. Fernando Alonso ran with the old side pod this morning.
:43:14. > :43:20.About three years ago, Ferrari did not test their cars properly. Now
:43:21. > :43:25.they are the ones who test them some new times before they sign them off.
:43:25. > :43:28.They look like reasonable developments to me. There are
:43:28. > :43:33.interesting picture beginning to evolve here. Mark Webber is on his
:43:33. > :43:40.second lap on the supersoft tyres. He is slightly down, but only by
:43:40. > :43:48.hundredths of a second. Mark Webber misses the wall of champions by
:43:48. > :43:57.about six inches. In contrast, the Lotus of Kimi Raikkonen is also on
:43:57. > :44:01.the supersoft tyre, and he has had two flying laps. He is slow, half a
:44:01. > :44:06.second slower than the benchmark pace set by the Red Bulls. It
:44:06. > :44:11.appears that this Lotus, which is so gentle on its tyres, is struggling
:44:11. > :44:16.to get temperature into the tyres to get a good qualifying lap. On the
:44:16. > :44:26.third lap, he finally improves. Is still three tenths of a second
:44:26. > :44:26.
:44:27. > :44:31.slower than the Red Bulls. The teams that benefit the most from going
:44:31. > :44:41.easy on the tyres are the ones who succeed the most in the hot races.
:44:41. > :44:45.
:44:45. > :44:49.It is a disadvantage they have here. The teams that don't put the
:44:49. > :44:54.downforce all the way through the car and don't use the Pirelli to its
:44:54. > :45:02.maximum will struggle this weekend. Lewis Hamilton is winding up to
:45:02. > :45:08.start a quick lap. He is on the supersoft tyre. This is his first
:45:08. > :45:17.lap on the tyre. He is forth at the moment. Let's monitor how much of an
:45:17. > :45:22.improvement it gives him. He is entering turn three. You going to
:45:22. > :45:26.turn five, flat out right hand and you have to be careful to get over
:45:26. > :45:29.to the right for the braking. For a second gear chicane, the chicanes
:45:29. > :45:32.are very similar, there is a wall gear chicane, the chicanes are very
:45:32. > :45:41.similar, there is a wall on the exit to get close to without hitting it
:45:41. > :45:46.and here, brake point is under the curb as much as possible. This track
:45:46. > :45:50.is well known for the cars needing to be good on the brakes. This is
:45:50. > :45:54.the most important corner on the track because the exit is leading
:45:54. > :45:59.down to the longest straight. You will see him past the DRS line in a
:45:59. > :46:04.second. He will open the DRS as he passes there and he had a lot of
:46:04. > :46:08.time to think about the brake point for the final chicane. It is a quick
:46:08. > :46:12.chicane. You enter in third gear. Get as close to the wall as you
:46:12. > :46:18.dare. Onto the front straight again. Here he comes, Lewis Hamilton keeps
:46:18. > :46:23.a straight line down the pit straight. He improves, goes fastest
:46:23. > :46:28.and that is despite giving away over one tenth of a second in the first
:46:28. > :46:34.sector. Nico Rosberg has also been on a lap, is it faster? It looks
:46:34. > :46:37.like it is. No, it is not, he has lost time in the final sector. A
:46:37. > :46:41.quarter of a second slower than Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton gave
:46:41. > :46:45.something away there in the first sector, so the Mercedes got the
:46:45. > :46:48.tyres up to temperature in the second and third sectors. Red Bull
:46:48. > :46:53.did their times on the second flying lap on the super soft tyre and
:46:53. > :46:57.Mercedes have gone out with Hamilton on on the first flying lap of nailed
:46:57. > :46:59.it and beaten them. Hamilton from Webber from Rosberg at the first
:46:59. > :47:01.flying lap of nailed it and beaten them. Hamilton from Webber from
:47:01. > :47:04.Rosberg as we enter this critical phase in terms of deciding the
:47:04. > :47:08.ultimate timesheets from this practice. It will be these runs
:47:08. > :47:12.which decide it. It was sector one problems for Hamilton in the Monaco
:47:12. > :47:20.qualifying, the same story we were talking about earlier, taking a
:47:20. > :47:23.little while to get the front tyres up to temperature. Jenny. A quick
:47:23. > :47:26.temperature and weather update for you. This is the critical part.
:47:26. > :47:30.Technical directors have been critical and starting to put up
:47:30. > :47:34.their hands to feel what is going on with the weather. A few spits and
:47:34. > :47:39.spots of rain, very tiny but we are expecting a weather band to moving
:47:39. > :47:44.towards the end of this session. Anyone who is not on the super
:47:44. > :47:51.softs needs to think about it. drivers have not set a time on the
:47:51. > :47:56.super soft. Jenson Button is one, Romain Grosjean, Valtteri Bottas,
:47:56. > :48:03.Hulkenberg, the two Caterham s, waiting for the track to improve as
:48:03. > :48:09.much as they can. A big lock up for Adrian Sutil. Gary. Going back to
:48:09. > :48:19.the tyres, doing one lap or two, this is a unique circuit because you
:48:19. > :48:22.
:48:22. > :48:27.spend a lot of time... Yes, that is one of the things I was going to
:48:27. > :48:32.say, this circuit, because of its characteristics, long straights and
:48:32. > :48:37.slow speed corners as such means the tyres don't work laterally that
:48:37. > :48:41.hard. The cornering forces are not as high as normal circuits. When you
:48:41. > :48:46.come out down the straight, the wheels are slipping, spinning by a
:48:46. > :48:50.very small amount which keeps the rear tyre temperature but the front
:48:50. > :48:54.tyres are doing nothing, just holding up the car so they get cold.
:48:54. > :48:58.When you arrive at the last chicane it is easy for the front tyres to
:48:58. > :49:03.have lost temperature and the rear tyres to have got too hot. Some
:49:03. > :49:07.drivers take two laps, some do it on the first lap, it is to balance it,
:49:07. > :49:16.to maintain the temperature on all four tyres to give you balanced
:49:16. > :49:18.grid. Hamilton has got it right, the tyres are well matched, front and
:49:19. > :49:23.rear. No rain expected at the moment, a few drops at times is the
:49:23. > :49:28.weather radar forecast that has been given to the teams in the pit wall.
:49:28. > :49:31.Out of the final corner, Felipe Massa, a great lap by Lewis
:49:31. > :49:38.Hamilton, his second flying lap on the supersoft tyres. Team-mate
:49:38. > :49:41.Rosberg has done 15.3, so not quite such rich pickings for him but
:49:41. > :49:47.Hamilton seems to have got it hooked up. Alonso is on the supersoft
:49:48. > :49:53.tyres. We must keep an eye on him. He has done a gentle lap on it and
:49:53. > :49:57.we will see if he pushes it harder now. Slow through sector three,
:49:57. > :50:05.Fernando Alonso, on that lap. Let's see if he picks up the pace. Romain
:50:05. > :50:09.Grosjean, we are on board. Let's listen to his radio. There is
:50:09. > :50:14.something wrong with the fuel pick-up, he was saying, Paul di
:50:14. > :50:19.Resta. He has a problem with the engine cut out. This is where Kubica
:50:19. > :50:23.had a huge accident a few years ago, he bounced back to win the following
:50:23. > :50:28.year's Grand Prix in Montreal and you can hear from him in tomorrow's
:50:28. > :50:31.programme, a great interview with one of the most popular men, five
:50:31. > :50:37.o'clock, BBC One, Robert Kubica on the BBC talking about his arm
:50:37. > :50:41.injury, his hopes of recovery and many other subjects as well. Out of
:50:41. > :50:45.the final corner comes Romain Grosjean, trying to rebuild the
:50:45. > :50:50.shutters -- shattered confidence after four accidents, the ninth
:50:50. > :50:54.fastest for him in a Lotus. He is having the same problem that Kimi
:50:54. > :51:03.Raikkonen has got, trying to get the tyres up to temperature. A massive
:51:03. > :51:08.lock up from Jean-Eric Vergne as he tried to go outside the Marussia Tom
:51:08. > :51:12.at breaking point. The bobbin he had much -- too much pressure, but he
:51:12. > :51:16.got it in and got the exit and it is quite impressive and he will not
:51:16. > :51:23.have lost too much time. How do you think he's getting on, Jean-Eric
:51:23. > :51:27.Vergne? Is he finding his feet? big fan, I have raced against him a
:51:27. > :51:30.lot and is used to live with him in Milton Keynes so he is doing a great
:51:30. > :51:35.job and in Monaco especially last weekend, a week and a half ago, was
:51:35. > :51:38.very impressive. You are one of the new generation that is coming
:51:38. > :51:43.through, drivers in their early 20s, just pushing and nibbling away at
:51:43. > :51:50.the heels of the drivers who like to think they have their feet under the
:51:50. > :51:58.table, established in Formula one. Who is the best of your generation?
:51:58. > :52:08.When I have been on a drive, he has been so impressive. Alonso goes P1.
:52:08. > :52:09.
:52:09. > :52:14.That is quite an impressive lap. Jules is under the Ferrari win,
:52:14. > :52:18.Jules Bianchi, he is one of the best drivers in the world. A good lap by
:52:18. > :52:22.Alonso, just eclipsed Lewis Hamilton by fractions of a second. Going back
:52:22. > :52:27.to what you are saying, any opportunity is an opportunity to be
:52:27. > :52:31.grabbed in Formula one. It is a chance to showcase your talent. How
:52:31. > :52:35.do you impress in a back of the grid car? It is all about your
:52:35. > :52:39.performance on a weekend to weekend basis. Your benchmark is your
:52:39. > :52:42.team-mate, so if you are able to be on top of your team-mates at, week
:52:42. > :52:45.out, and show you are driving the car and driving the wheels of the
:52:45. > :52:49.car and making it do things that other people did not think were
:52:49. > :52:52.possible, that is all you have to do. Ford Jules Bianchi there is very
:52:52. > :52:56.little light pressure because he because he knows he is not going to
:52:56. > :53:00.win, he will not come close, so he has to drive as fast as he possibly
:53:00. > :53:05.can and he is out of the limelight in terms of the media and can make
:53:05. > :53:08.the most of the opportunity. You are looking for an opportunity into
:53:08. > :53:13.Formula one, hoping it will come with the Caterham team. Do you feel
:53:13. > :53:18.there will be movement at the end of the season? Some changes that might
:53:18. > :53:24.allow you and your contemporary is to get in? Spitting with rain in the
:53:24. > :53:28.pit lane. Yes, there are so many things uncertain and until it
:53:28. > :53:33.actually happens it is difficult to comment on it but I would say I
:53:33. > :53:37.would be disappointed if I didn't have a race seat in 2014. We wish
:53:37. > :53:42.you well with that, Alexander Rossi, development driver with the
:53:42. > :53:44.Caterham team and Gary Anderson is in the Mercedes garage. The guys are
:53:44. > :53:50.working on the floor Trail beneath the front of the chassis and what
:53:50. > :53:53.they are doing is changing the ballast. There is a piece of heavy
:53:53. > :54:00.metal which can move the weight distribution back and forward. You
:54:00. > :54:03.are allowed to move it about 1%. They can put a piece of aluminium or
:54:03. > :54:07.heavy metal in there so guys are moving it. The other interesting
:54:07. > :54:13.thing, on the front ring, you will see a sensor on the forward element
:54:13. > :54:18.of the front wing, with the tube and the bigger end. It is measuring the
:54:18. > :54:24.temperature in the front tyre. It is important to understand it. It is
:54:24. > :54:27.illegal to run tomorrow but it is legal today, a test today. We're
:54:27. > :54:31.talking about aerodynamic surfaces. There is a cable running across the
:54:31. > :54:35.top of the wing, taped across the front of the car. Most people will
:54:35. > :54:39.say doesn't not affect the aerodynamics and yes, it does, but
:54:39. > :54:44.it is the under surface of the wing that does the work and creates the
:54:44. > :54:47.downforce. The top surface is there to facilitate the work done by the
:54:48. > :54:51.undersurface so if you put the cable on the bottom of the wing Tommy you
:54:51. > :54:55.destroy it completely. By taking it across the top of the wing, it
:54:55. > :55:00.doesn't do much harm and is more beneficial to understand how the
:55:00. > :55:04.tyre is heating up. That is Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes that Gary
:55:04. > :55:08.Anderson was talking about. Can I ask a daft question? Hamilton came
:55:08. > :55:14.into the pits, they took the tyres off his car, took them away and are
:55:14. > :55:20.now bringing them back again. Why do they do that? Do they keep them up
:55:20. > :55:27.and bring them back? Is it to get better access to the car? With the
:55:27. > :55:31.team set up, what they have is a routine. Behind you, we think he is
:55:31. > :55:37.on high fuel, we have to stay ahead of Vettel. Everybody has that
:55:37. > :55:41.routine jobs to do, so they will be planning. The fuel rig will go on to
:55:41. > :55:46.the tire, the tyres will come off and the engineer will tell him what
:55:46. > :55:50.they want to do as far as work is concerned. It is easy to get them
:55:50. > :55:54.off and put them back on again, or put another setback on if that is
:55:55. > :55:58.what they decide to do, they do not have to work at getting them off the
:55:58. > :56:01.car. If everybody was stood around waiting for orders, you would have
:56:01. > :56:08.all the work to do once it was sorted out but at least they have
:56:08. > :56:13.halved before deciding what do. Jensen has -- Jenson Button is
:56:13. > :56:18.hustling the McCarron, on the super soft tyre. He visits his qualifying
:56:18. > :56:23.simulation lap through turns eight and nine. Through the curve towards
:56:23. > :56:28.the hairpin bend, from 180 miles an hour he brakes, takes the car to 40
:56:28. > :56:31.miles an hour through the apex and picks up through turn 11. Down the
:56:31. > :56:35.long straight. I have had to walk along here this weekend and the
:56:35. > :56:41.logistics are believable for stop unless you have a golf buggy, you
:56:41. > :56:46.have to put in serious shoe leather. 200 miles an hour, turns
:56:46. > :56:52.the car into 14. He misses the apex of the corner and not what he had in
:56:52. > :56:57.mind. He did was go into the wall when he was on for a podium result
:56:57. > :57:06.in BA are Honda, it is a place that can reward from an amazing victory
:57:06. > :57:09.in 2011 but it can also buy you as it did the Honda days. Paul Di Resta
:57:09. > :57:12.takes up his gloves and rests on the top of the steering wheel. He was
:57:12. > :57:17.saying he is having some sort of gearbox issue, so at the moment the
:57:17. > :57:21.guys have taken off the covers on the back of the car. They are
:57:21. > :57:25.resting in front of it and are screwing up the back to have a look
:57:26. > :57:30.at what is the problem. Gearboxes are a real problem. If they go, it
:57:30. > :57:34.takes a long time to put it back together. He has had a word with his
:57:34. > :57:38.race engineer, JP, and has the sheet in front of him so he is doing
:57:38. > :57:48.information and reading but they wouldn't need to get this fixed.
:57:48. > :57:49.
:57:49. > :57:52.Alexander Rossi in the commentary box and I are making -- analysing
:57:52. > :57:55.the mistake of Jenson Button. What happened? I don't know, he may have
:57:55. > :57:59.carried too much speed and because the wall is famous backed out of it
:57:59. > :58:02.a bit but it looked like he was carrying a bit. The angle his car
:58:03. > :58:08.was taking over the curb was a bit off and maybe the McLaren is that
:58:08. > :58:12.sensitive over the curbs, if it is not right he could have a big
:58:12. > :58:16.oversteer moment. He has experience and thought better of it and that is
:58:16. > :58:22.what the run-off is for, to give you an experienced -- to give you an
:58:22. > :58:25.escape path. He has an experience of going into the wall, and in North
:58:25. > :58:30.America there is an expression there is two types of driver, those who
:58:30. > :58:33.hit the wall and those who are going to. Half an hour remaining in the
:58:33. > :58:37.session. Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari needs a strong result here
:58:37. > :58:42.this weekend to get his championship challenge back on track against
:58:42. > :58:46.Sebastian Vettel, ideally you would like Vettel to go away from here not
:58:46. > :58:51.scoring too many points. It has been the Manchester united like
:58:51. > :58:53.relentless consistency of Vettel that has meant he has a significant
:58:53. > :58:59.lead in the drivers championship over Fernando Alonso and Kimi
:58:59. > :59:06.Raikkonen, who are pursuing him. Vettel has a points after six races,
:59:06. > :59:09.Kimi Raikkonen, 86, Alonso, 78. Alonso has more points at this stage
:59:09. > :59:15.of the season than he had last year and he was leading the championship
:59:15. > :59:18.last year. It shows you that Vettel really has had a cracking start to
:59:18. > :59:23.this season, for all that he has complained bitterly about the tyres.
:59:23. > :59:26.Hearing that makes me laugh, because they are the people who complain the
:59:26. > :59:34.most and Red Bull is not happy unless they qualify on pole for
:59:34. > :59:37.every race. Obviously Sebastien is making it work for him and I think
:59:37. > :59:41.they may need to be a bit appreciative for the results they
:59:41. > :59:47.have had because they are doing a very good job. Sutil did a little
:59:47. > :59:52.run, he is in the pits at the moment. In the Force India. He is
:59:52. > :59:55.worth keeping an eye on. This, on paper, is a track that should really
:59:55. > :59:59.suit that team because they have always had a car that is very
:00:00. > :00:03.slippery on the straight and pretty subtle in terms of rider over the
:00:03. > :00:07.curb. It is not class leading but certainly a very slippery car down
:00:08. > :00:12.the straights. As Gary Anderson was saying, if they play their cards
:00:12. > :00:16.right and have some very smart strategy people now at Force India,
:00:16. > :00:20.there is a guy called Mark Barnett, very, very smart on the race
:00:20. > :00:29.strategy, he has played a few tricks and a few cards this season that has
:00:29. > :00:32.got them strong results. Maybe on Sunday they can get themselves a
:00:32. > :00:36.podium, the result they would love to get. 28 minutes of the session
:00:36. > :00:40.remaining. We are into the long run phase of this practice two with
:00:40. > :00:43.Alonso fastest, Bottas, helmet camera on-board for him, that
:00:43. > :00:47.hopefully we will see plenty of that during the course of Sunday's Grand
:00:47. > :00:50.Prix. It gives you an idea of how much head movement there is for the
:00:50. > :00:55.drivers. There is not too many high energy corners. It will be
:00:55. > :01:05.interesting to see a camera like that in turn three in Barcelona, in
:01:05. > :01:08.
:01:08. > :01:18.terms of neck movement. Your neck does move a lot. This is as close to
:01:18. > :01:21.
:01:22. > :01:27.a driver's view as you can get. The visibility is very limited. You can
:01:27. > :01:33.see the top of the tyre, so you can tell if it is locked or not. But you
:01:33. > :01:40.can't see the suspension. So as new cars evolve, you have to get used to
:01:40. > :01:45.how much space you have to leave in front of you. As we have seen on so
:01:45. > :01:51.many race starts, it is very easy to take off a piece of the wings. There
:01:51. > :01:58.is a lot that goes into driving a lap. That is one of the things I
:01:58. > :02:02.forget about, how long and wide your car is. The former director of the
:02:02. > :02:07.Williams team used to say a Formula One culprit is a brutal
:02:07. > :02:10.environment. Talk about how shaken up you get by driving one of these
:02:10. > :02:14.things? It is not the most comfortable thing in the world, but
:02:14. > :02:19.at the end of the day, you are doing one of the coolest things in the
:02:19. > :02:23.world. So you can deal with a bit of discomfort to drive the car. It is a
:02:23. > :02:30.small price to pay. And with technology and what has come along
:02:30. > :02:34.in terms of making the seats more comfortable, it has come a long way.
:02:34. > :02:44.But the space is so limited. And the vibrations that go through the car
:02:44. > :02:47.
:02:47. > :02:51.gets overlooked quite a bit. The car is so stiff. When the cars move,
:02:51. > :02:56.that is all going through you, through your arms, your legs and
:02:56. > :03:00.your back. So when you are in the car after having been out of it for
:03:00. > :03:08.a few weeks, it is an eye opening experience. But the human body can
:03:08. > :03:17.adapt. What part of the body hurts most after a long stint in the car?
:03:17. > :03:23.Probably your butt, to be honest. It takes quite an impact. A mass art is
:03:23. > :03:27.very welcome afterwards! To get an idea of how much the cockpit of a
:03:27. > :03:37.Formula One car has changed over the years, there is a fascinating
:03:37. > :03:38.
:03:38. > :03:45.feature in BC one's coverage on Sunday at 6:15pm on BBC One. You get
:03:45. > :03:48.to see the cockpit of a Mercedes, with a seat almost like an armchair
:03:48. > :03:57.in comparison with the cars of today. It is hard to believe now,
:03:57. > :04:04.all these years later, no seat belts. Yeah, I had an opportunity to
:04:04. > :04:14.drive a Lotus from 1967 in January, and that did have seatbelts, but I
:04:14. > :04:14.
:04:15. > :04:21.was blown away with how exposed the drivers were. The cars are so safe
:04:21. > :04:26.now. It was unbelievable how exposed I felt. Driving those cars was an
:04:27. > :04:35.experience I will never forget. may have been a lot slower through
:04:35. > :04:39.the corners than this Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes back
:04:39. > :04:43.then of Stirling Moss still came to speeds approaching 100 in my -- 180
:04:43. > :04:49.miles an hour on a closed racetrack. You certainly didn't want
:04:49. > :04:54.to get thrown out of them. Those were the days of the cotton
:04:54. > :04:58.overalls. Some people wore bowties to take part in the race, and there
:04:58. > :05:08.would be a glass of champagne ready at the end of the race as you wiped
:05:08. > :05:12.the all of your face. The races were longer than. So, it is Alonso from
:05:12. > :05:16.Hamilton from Grosjean, with 25 minutes of this session remaining.
:05:16. > :05:26.Grosjean is the only one of the front runners who is running at the
:05:26. > :05:27.
:05:27. > :05:31.moment on the medium tyre. He is driving out of the pits as I speak.
:05:31. > :05:39.His team-mate, Kimi Raikkonen, was not able to find the temperature of
:05:39. > :05:42.the tyre on the supersoft and is down in 11th place. Lotus are doing
:05:42. > :05:51.a back-to-back comparison. We have seen Ferrari doing that throughout
:05:52. > :05:56.the season. Alexander, tell us how much benefit it is if you get to
:05:56. > :06:02.guys who get on with each other and are working together with their team
:06:02. > :06:08.and want to share that data? It is double the information. Most of the
:06:08. > :06:13.drivers in F1 now appreciate that it is as much about the machine as it
:06:13. > :06:17.is the driver, so they see the benefit of working together and not
:06:17. > :06:24.fighting when it comes to off-track preparation. Obviously, when the
:06:24. > :06:28.helmets are on, it is a different story. But off-track, there is no
:06:29. > :06:38.harm in sharing everything you can, because it will only help the team
:06:39. > :06:39.
:06:39. > :06:48.build better updates for you. Once you can't change the car, that might
:06:48. > :06:52.change a bit. But in F1, where it is almost completely open in terms of
:06:52. > :06:57.developed, you definitely need to work with your team-mate. The voice
:06:57. > :07:04.of Alexander Rossi, development driver for the caterer Formula One
:07:04. > :07:09.team. This is the second practice session for Sunday's Canadian Grand
:07:09. > :07:13.Prix. It is Ferrari at the top of the timesheets will stop Lewis
:07:13. > :07:19.Hamilton is just a fraction behind his former team-mate. Oath of them
:07:19. > :07:23.have moved on from McLaren, where they were briefly back together in
:07:23. > :07:33.2007, what an explosive year that was for them and for Formula One as
:07:33. > :07:35.
:07:35. > :07:42.a whole. An incredible rivalry between them. Sutil is eighth,
:07:42. > :07:48.Button is night. Raikkonen is in 11th place. Paul di Resta in 13th
:07:48. > :07:58.place, having gone quickly earlier on in this session. Williams are
:07:58. > :08:05.
:08:05. > :08:11.looking for better performance. They have been becalmed this year, the
:08:11. > :08:17.Williams team. Still amazing to get off the mark. No teams on the board
:08:17. > :08:21.for the team that won last year's Spanish Grand Prix. It is a very
:08:21. > :08:26.different story in 2013. What is happening with the track
:08:26. > :08:36.temperatures? 20 degrees. Air temperature 17. It has a date chilly
:08:36. > :08:39.
:08:39. > :08:43.day. We knew from the beginning that it was going to be cold. The teams
:08:43. > :08:48.can control the temperatures with the blankets they have, but they can
:08:48. > :08:52.only control it so much. It is up to the driver to push hard, and that
:08:52. > :08:57.can be difficult on a set of tyres you may not have run before. You can
:08:57. > :09:05.lose up to 40 degrees on the out lap if you are not pushing the right
:09:05. > :09:09.amount. At the end of the day, the blankets can only raise the surface
:09:09. > :09:17.temperature of the tyre, they can't raise the internal temperature. That
:09:18. > :09:21.is up to the driver. This session is the one where we get the sense of
:09:21. > :09:26.what the outright lap speed is on the qualifying tyre. Now we are
:09:26. > :09:34.getting a sense of what the cars can do on the longer runs, which tells
:09:34. > :09:41.us how they might perform in the race. It appears that the Red Bull
:09:41. > :09:46.is a good bit faster than the Mercedes. We have Mark Webber out on
:09:46. > :09:50.circuit on a long one, and also Lewis Hamilton. There is quite
:09:50. > :09:55.different in lap times. Gary Anderson, how do you read this? Fuel
:09:55. > :09:59.is one possibility, but there seems to be a performance differential.
:10:00. > :10:03.Fuel is such a big thing. We don't know what the difference is. Ten
:10:03. > :10:11.kilograms of you around here is about a quarter of a second a lap.
:10:11. > :10:21.So it can show up as a big difference. With Mercedes, we saw
:10:21. > :10:21.
:10:21. > :10:25.them when the race in Monaco with Mikko costs -- Nico Rosberg. But
:10:25. > :10:33.although it is important to be at the front, it is not ultimately
:10:34. > :10:39.important. We have to look at the time is a lot more tomorrow before
:10:39. > :10:44.we can make a decision. As we see the Red Bull sliding past the
:10:44. > :10:52.Williams, Gary, why is it that Red Bull has had a good qualifying car
:10:52. > :11:02.here over the years, but has never won the Canadian Grand Prix?
:11:02. > :11:07.Bull have always built a car to go round corners quickly. So they have
:11:07. > :11:17.compromised on efficiency and straight-line speed to do that. This
:11:17. > :11:18.
:11:18. > :11:28.is one of the circuits where it can hurt them. And now with DRS as well,
:11:28. > :11:31.
:11:31. > :11:35.it is easier. Light rain around this sector. In the past, we have seen
:11:35. > :11:39.races where they suffered penalties and had to start at the back. And
:11:39. > :11:44.the one thing they changed was the rear wing set-up and the gears, and
:11:44. > :11:48.they still were not getting good results. So they can set the car up
:11:48. > :11:51.to go quicker in a straight line, but they seem to be stuck in that
:11:51. > :11:59.philosophy that going round corners is the best way to go. Most of the
:11:59. > :12:02.time it has worked for them, but sometimes they pay the price.
:12:02. > :12:08.year, Vettel changed all the settings and came through the field
:12:08. > :12:14.like a hot knife through butter. We are just seeing spots of rain as the
:12:14. > :12:18.showers start to move. Montreal is not exactly on the seat, but it is
:12:18. > :12:27.next to the Saint Lawrence Seaway that feeds in from the Atlantic. You
:12:27. > :12:37.get these large passenger ships that cruise by just across the tree line
:12:37. > :12:38.
:12:38. > :12:48.next to the rowing Basin from the 1976 Olympic Games. That is right
:12:48. > :12:50.
:12:50. > :13:00.next to the race track. Then there is a channel with gigantic cruise
:13:00. > :13:04.
:13:04. > :13:14.ships and tankers going through sedately, at a fraction of the speed
:13:14. > :13:19.
:13:19. > :13:23.of the Formula One cars that flash past. Hamilton locks up his right
:13:23. > :13:29.front tyre. Breaking and Lewis Hamilton have been a talking point
:13:29. > :13:35.this weekend. All eyes on him to see if he is getting on top of the
:13:35. > :13:45.issues and getting the Mercedes to slow down the way he wants to. His
:13:45. > :13:51.
:13:51. > :14:01.team principal joined us to give us some insight into what work they are
:14:01. > :14:01.
:14:01. > :14:07.doing and the work that Hamilton is doing personally to make sure the
:14:07. > :14:11.critical part of his game, the break-in, is the best it can be.
:14:11. > :14:16.Raikkonen has had a lock-up. Alexander, you have a plane to
:14:16. > :14:21.catch, because you are taking part in something else. Our regular five
:14:21. > :14:26.Live correspondent will be one of your competitors. You must be stoked
:14:26. > :14:29.to be racing in that event. It came up as a last-minute thing, but yes.
:14:29. > :14:32.To be able to do it in the Caterham colour is a great opportunity. I
:14:32. > :14:34.hope I can represent America and hopefully go for a podium. Steve
:14:34. > :14:37.McQueen played Michael Delaney in the film. One of the greatest racing
:14:37. > :14:42.films ever created. As a racing driver, it is certainly on the
:14:42. > :14:51.bucket list, if you will. Thanks for joining us. Alexander is off to the
:14:51. > :14:57.airport now. Yet another helmet design for Sebastian Vettel this
:14:57. > :15:03.weekend. That is some collection he is building up. When he opens up the
:15:03. > :15:06.Sebastian Vettel Museum near Hockenheim, that anonymous part of
:15:06. > :15:16.Germany where you are not sure where you are, I am sure that will be a
:15:16. > :15:17.
:15:17. > :15:21.real landmark full of 100,000 crash helmet as worn by Sebastian Vettel.
:15:21. > :15:24.Alonso is looking fast, Sutil, Hamilton, Pace does not seem to be
:15:24. > :15:28.there on the long runs for Mercedes. I don't know if that is a
:15:28. > :15:33.little indication there is work to be done. Cater has just missed the
:15:33. > :15:37.chicane underneath us. A lot of cars have missed the apex of the chicane.
:15:37. > :15:41.Our commentary position is right above that final chicane and the
:15:41. > :15:46.wall of champions, the legendary concrete wall on the outside which
:15:46. > :15:50.has drawn in the likes of Michael Schumacher and Jack Miller --
:15:50. > :15:55.Jacques Villeneuve and Jenson Button among many others over the years,
:15:55. > :15:58.certainly the Cater just missing it. Looking at Hamilton's long runs,
:15:58. > :16:05.calls the concern. We need to understand what fuel loads everyone
:16:05. > :16:09.is carrying. It looks as though the Mercedes race pace is not as good as
:16:09. > :16:14.some of its competitors. Ferrari looked pretty good, fastest time on
:16:14. > :16:18.the single lap for Alonso. He set the time on the second flying lap on
:16:18. > :16:23.the super soft tyre. We saw the Mercedes able to get the temperature
:16:23. > :16:28.into its tyres a little more quickly. Hamilton's first flying lap
:16:28. > :16:32.was good enough to go fastest, then he went faster again. It was Alonso,
:16:32. > :16:35.on his second flying lap, who eclipsed the Mercedes, some
:16:35. > :16:40.encouragement for the Ferrari team not least because the worrying thing
:16:40. > :16:47.for them coming out of Monaco was they did not seem to have any
:16:47. > :16:54.traction. This is Jenson Button's radio. Can you please tell me what
:16:54. > :16:58.the problem is? There are sensor issues on the gearbox. That was
:16:58. > :17:05.Jenson Button asking for some clarification and the McLaren
:17:05. > :17:08.reserve driver is with Jenny. you for joining us. We heard Jenson
:17:08. > :17:13.Button saying he has a problem downshifting through the gears. What
:17:13. > :17:17.is he saying to you on the pit wall because you get to hear everything?
:17:17. > :17:20.He has had a couple of downshifts that have gone into neutral rather
:17:20. > :17:26.than the gear, so there could be problems with the censors. They are
:17:26. > :17:31.looking at the data. They are not too concerned. He is being careful,
:17:31. > :17:35.what he's doing. Our cameraman will have to be careful, they are moving
:17:35. > :17:40.car. Gary, talk about what they are doing to try and revive the fortunes
:17:40. > :17:47.of McLaren because it has not been the best start the season, has it?
:17:47. > :17:52.It is not. We have a, updates and the cars are running on different
:17:52. > :17:56.specifications. It is not just about bringing loads of pace, it is
:17:56. > :18:02.maximising the car you have got. Getting the best out of what we have
:18:02. > :18:08.got, while bringing the updates that we can and move forward. We have a
:18:08. > :18:12.step forward this weekend but it will not happen overnight. Jenson
:18:12. > :18:16.Button has been with the team for a while. He understands the car and
:18:16. > :18:20.understands better than Sergio Perez, his new team-mate, so how
:18:20. > :18:23.difficult is he finding this season? I think it is difficult for Sergio
:18:23. > :18:28.Perez after last year's season, McLaren beating him on winning
:18:28. > :18:33.races, to come here bubbly expecting to do that from the word go, but it
:18:33. > :18:37.has not gone that well for him. Sergio is not here for one year, he
:18:37. > :18:41.has a long future and will be winning races with us. It is
:18:41. > :18:46.probably not the start he expected to have with McLaren, but he is
:18:46. > :18:53.competitive. In the last few races we have seen the Sergio Perez we
:18:53. > :18:57.expected. Very aggressive maybe that is what Weise -- what we saw from
:18:57. > :19:02.Sergio, he is pushing the car hard. Hopefully we can improve the car and
:19:02. > :19:06.helping to start winning races. circuit is the McLaren favourite
:19:06. > :19:11.circuit, you have one here for the last three years. Will it take rain
:19:11. > :19:14.or something special to see that repeated this year? As it looks dry
:19:14. > :19:20.we will struggle to win races this weekend but if it is wet, you never
:19:20. > :19:26.know. Jenson Button has had mixed races here, but a lot of success. If
:19:26. > :19:33.we have rain, it is a better chance. It has not been the best of starts
:19:33. > :19:36.for you in DTM? It has been a tough start to the year in DTM but there
:19:36. > :19:43.are a lot of things happening in the first few races that make it
:19:43. > :19:47.difficult. If we can get on top of that we can win races. We had a
:19:47. > :19:52.massive lead last year and managed to lose, so we can't give up, we
:19:52. > :19:56.have a chance. Young driver tests will be happening at Silverstone in
:19:56. > :20:02.July, the end of June, are you going to be in them? Do you know yet?
:20:02. > :20:06.Probably, yes. I think I will be in the car. We need to try and get in
:20:06. > :20:11.the car every now and then. All the simulator work we are doing at
:20:11. > :20:14.Woking, it is difficult to know how close you are when you are not
:20:14. > :20:20.driving the real car. Me and the other drivers get a chance to drive
:20:20. > :20:23.a real car, so what -- so we know what it feels like. We can tell if
:20:23. > :20:29.we are doing the right thing in the simulator or not. A bobbin if you
:20:29. > :20:32.would like to see testing, coming back? Absolutely, when I joined the
:20:33. > :20:37.team I was assessing every week so what we're doing now is not testing
:20:37. > :20:40.at all, it is very different. It would be great to get some testing
:20:40. > :20:47.back in season because we can help more with developing the car in the
:20:47. > :20:50.right direction. Gary, thank you. is interesting to hear him talking
:20:50. > :20:56.about testing. He would love to do more because his opportunities to
:20:56. > :21:01.get into the car are limited. A lot of reserve drivers, like Alexander
:21:01. > :21:04.Rossi, the development driver at Cater, gets an opportunity on a
:21:04. > :21:10.Friday morning during Grand Prix weekends. One of the series doing
:21:10. > :21:14.the rounds this weekend, a possible theory of where we go after the
:21:14. > :21:18.furore day after the Pirelli test that happened in May is how about
:21:18. > :21:23.the idea that you have a rotation system and maybe after several Grand
:21:23. > :21:28.Prix, maybe Bahrain, possibly after Barcelona, maybe Silverstone, a
:21:28. > :21:33.couple of teams, pulled out of a hat as to who dose which tests but two
:21:33. > :21:37.of them stick around and do 1000 kilometres tyre testing and testing
:21:37. > :21:42.us on the cars and that it is the same for everybody, spread out
:21:42. > :21:46.across the season, two teams at a time sticking around for a day or
:21:46. > :21:50.two after Grand Prix, as Mercedes did in Barcelona last month and then
:21:50. > :21:54.at least there is some testing to be done and nobody can accuse the
:21:54. > :22:00.others of getting unfair advantages. That is one theory going around. It
:22:00. > :22:04.is being proposed by one or two of the teams. Teams are not aligned on
:22:04. > :22:08.this. Ferrari pushing hard for return of testing. On-board with
:22:08. > :22:12.Ferrari, trying to pass the Toro Rosso. The closing speed was
:22:12. > :22:16.enormous going down the straight but it was not enough for Alonso to get
:22:16. > :22:21.alongside. He set the fastest lap on the long run he had done so far. On
:22:22. > :22:27.the lap before that. Even the hold-up from the Toro Rosso, he
:22:27. > :22:31.managed to do a lap of 1.18.04. We are seeing consistent lap times from
:22:31. > :22:35.this Ferrari, very fast and consistent. We need to be careful
:22:35. > :22:39.because if you were with us at the Monaco Grand Prix, the Ferrari on
:22:39. > :22:44.the first day of running looked tremendous. It looks quick and it
:22:44. > :22:47.looks like Alonso was not struggling too hard, or Massa, together lap
:22:47. > :22:51.time out of the car perhaps in comparison with other teams but then
:22:51. > :22:56.it fell apart with a series of accidents for Felipe Massa and poor
:22:56. > :22:59.traction on race day for Fernando Alonso. But so far, Alonso is not
:22:59. > :23:03.only quick, single lap with the fastest times that so far in the
:23:03. > :23:08.Ferrari, but he is quick and consistent on the long runs. A
:23:08. > :23:18.picture is beginning to emerge, Gary Anderson. Yes, definitely a picture
:23:18. > :23:22.
:23:22. > :23:25.is beginning to emerge. The top guys are at the top. This is a very
:23:25. > :23:30.different circuit, a short lap, a lot of straits. You have to look
:23:30. > :23:36.after the wheelspin. I watched Sebastian Vettel level while ago and
:23:36. > :23:40.they changed the tyres on his car. The rear tyres woodgrain is quite a
:23:40. > :23:45.lot. In generally cleans up on the straight. This is one of those
:23:45. > :23:50.circuits where the tyres can be kind to you if you can be kind to them. I
:23:50. > :23:53.think the Ferrari does very well. have an interesting picture as far
:23:53. > :23:58.as the Red Bull is concerned. Mark Webber is on the medium compound
:23:58. > :24:05.tyre at the moment and his run has been pretty consistent. He is
:24:05. > :24:10.laughing in the low 1.18, the same sort of place as Alonso. Adrian
:24:10. > :24:19.Sutil's lap times have started to go off a bit. He has done a long run in
:24:20. > :24:23.the Force India. Let's catch up with Jenny. Kimi Raikkonen, the end of
:24:23. > :24:29.his session, four and a half minutes to go. They are cagey about what is
:24:29. > :24:31.going on. They say they are checking a few things. They have done about
:24:31. > :24:38.35 laps and this is not how they would have wanted to end the
:24:38. > :24:43.session. We saw a picture of the Lotus garage, a lot of concern on
:24:43. > :24:47.the back of the car. Raikkonen out of the cockpit. That is the picture
:24:47. > :24:53.now. You can see mechanics working away, some of them working the pit
:24:53. > :24:57.lane crash helmets, ordinary ear defenders and it looks like they are
:24:57. > :25:00.taking the car apart, the bodywork is coming off. It looks like the
:25:00. > :25:04.floor is coming off. There is work to be done at the back of
:25:04. > :25:07.Raikkonen's car. He has not been happy with the performance of the
:25:07. > :25:15.Lotus today. It looked as though he was struggling to get temperature
:25:15. > :25:19.into the supersoft tyres for a qualifying simulation map -- lap.
:25:20. > :25:24.Unlike Grosjean, who had a strong run here last year, Romain Grosjean,
:25:24. > :25:28.which he could certainly do with repeating this year. He started the
:25:28. > :25:34.Grand Prix in seventh, came through to finish second using the gentle
:25:34. > :25:37.action of the Lotus on the tyres to use race strategy to get a strong
:25:37. > :25:43.finish. That was the story here last year. Sergio Perez doing the same
:25:43. > :25:47.thing at the wheel of the Sauber. Looking at Jules Bianchi, the brake
:25:47. > :25:52.dust coming out of the front, look at that. It gives you an idea how
:25:52. > :25:55.tough this race track is on the brakes on the tyres looking a little
:25:55. > :26:01.ragged as well. You will see a lot of that at the end of the Grand
:26:01. > :26:05.Prix, with the carbon brake just coming off the wheels. The brake
:26:05. > :26:11.discs did enormously over the course of a 300 kilometre Grand Prix, one
:26:11. > :26:15.of the toughest, if not the toughest circuits of the year, you have a
:26:15. > :26:18.series of big stops from in excess of 180 miles an hour and it puts
:26:18. > :26:22.pressure on the brake system and also on the drivers as well because
:26:22. > :26:27.every time they stamp on the brake pedal to go from approaching 200
:26:27. > :26:31.miles an hour down to 70 or 80 miles an hour, their innards go flying
:26:31. > :26:38.Ford, their chest is pressed against the belt and their neck is straining
:26:38. > :26:41.with the weight of the helmet, which is about four or five times the
:26:41. > :26:47.normal weight it would be. Ricciardo is on the long running the Toro
:26:48. > :26:52.Rosso, 4.9 seconds off its fastest pace set on the qualifying tyre
:26:52. > :26:58.earlier on. We are getting into the closing stages of this free practice
:26:58. > :27:02.two. A very interesting picture. A lot of laps have been set. Fernando
:27:03. > :27:05.Alonso has been hyperactive this afternoon. 46 laps, the most of
:27:05. > :27:11.anybody so far. Pretty much everybody has had a fairly busy
:27:11. > :27:14.time. Jenson Button has done 29 laps. Paul di Resta thought he had a
:27:15. > :27:20.fuel pressure problem and he has done only 22. Kimi Raikkonen,
:27:20. > :27:25.another man out of his car but nevertheless he has managed to cover
:27:25. > :27:29.35 laps. Sunday's Grand Prix is 70 laps. Alonso has done a fair
:27:29. > :27:33.percentage of a race distance here this afternoon. If you add that onto
:27:33. > :27:35.the laps they did this morning, 16 this morning, still not covered an
:27:36. > :27:41.entire race distance during the course of the day but this
:27:41. > :27:46.morning's practice session was rain affected with a wet track at the
:27:46. > :27:51.start. A mistake for Rosberg in the final chicane, not the first driver
:27:51. > :27:58.to do that. We have almost a full set today of drivers who have missed
:27:58. > :28:02.the breaking point into the final chicane. -- braking point. It is a
:28:02. > :28:06.couple of degrees lower, the track temperature, as it was at the start
:28:06. > :28:13.of this session. It is a moving target. The engineers are never
:28:13. > :28:17.quite sure whether track is but the improvement in terms of the grip
:28:17. > :28:21.level is unmistakable and the consistency of one or two of the
:28:21. > :28:31.runners, Fernando Alonso, a lock up into the hairpin loses him time but
:28:31. > :28:37.he is still banging out laps in the low 1.18, a. Webber macro is the
:28:37. > :28:41.same. -- Webber is the same. It does not look as though there is much to
:28:41. > :28:45.choose between the Ferrari and Red Bull in long run pace. The question
:28:45. > :28:50.is how long on Sunday will they be able to make the Times last? The
:28:50. > :28:55.chequered flag comes out. The session is over. Ferrari topped the
:28:55. > :29:01.timesheets, with Alonso and how dearly would he love for that to be
:29:01. > :29:05.the picture on Sunday afternoon, to get his championship challenge
:29:05. > :29:08.reinvigorated? Sebastian Vettel seventh fastest today. If he could
:29:08. > :29:13.replicate that on Sunday, he would be delighted. He will be working
:29:13. > :29:18.very hard to make sure that is not the case. Mercedes look quicker
:29:18. > :29:22.every single lap. Grosjean is fast on a single lap. Raikkonen not.
:29:22. > :29:26.Potentially he has a problem. Let's get the analysis of Gary Anderson.
:29:26. > :29:30.It is the same at the front but Ferrari will be happy. Looking down
:29:30. > :29:37.the pit lane, they have come here with bits and pieces, they have a
:29:37. > :29:40.new front wing and the sidepod, elements on there. They are trying
:29:40. > :29:44.to optimise their car for this track. They are pushing pretty hard
:29:44. > :29:49.after Monaco that was less than desirable for them. The mix is going
:29:49. > :29:53.to be there. Both Lotuss will there and it is going to be an interesting
:29:53. > :30:00.qualifier tomorrow. It certainly is. What about Force India? You tipped
:30:00. > :30:03.them for a strong result this weekend? It is the 100th Grand
:30:03. > :30:07.Prix, they are very determined to stand on their own rights and this
:30:07. > :30:11.season they have been competitive all the way through. They are
:30:11. > :30:16.knocking on the door of the podium. They need luck and to get it right
:30:16. > :30:20.when others do not. It could happen for them. The car is quick and there
:30:20. > :30:24.will be knocking on the door. It is always difficult to finish in the
:30:24. > :30:28.top three. They are not far away from it. What about the performance
:30:28. > :30:31.of the McLarens? They have been strongly Montreal over the years,
:30:31. > :30:38.winners of the last three consecutive Canadian Grand Prix is.
:30:38. > :30:48.How do you read them? Is it stronger weekend for the McLaren team?
:30:48. > :30:50.
:30:50. > :30:55.should be. The McLarens have aerodynamic deficiencies at the
:30:55. > :31:04.moment, but that will not be such a big problem here. It will be how far
:31:04. > :31:11.up the top ten they can get. Don't discount them from winning the race
:31:11. > :31:18.if the conditions change on Sunday afternoon. And a tight at all for
:31:18. > :31:24.pole position? For sure. We normally talk about a 10th of a second being
:31:24. > :31:30.the difference. It will be more like five hundredths of a second because
:31:30. > :31:35.of the way this circuit is. It is just about getting that braking
:31:35. > :31:45.right. You can lose two tenths of a second quickly. It will be very
:31:45. > :32:02.
:32:02. > :32:07.tight at the front. Certainly a very interesting picture. As Gary
:32:07. > :32:15.Anderson was saying, it is a short lap in Montreal. The gaps between
:32:15. > :32:20.the cars are always very tight. So Alonso topped the timesheets. The
:32:20. > :32:25.debrief this evening will be a cheerful one for them. For Rory have
:32:25. > :32:28.not won this race for a few years, although they are the second most
:32:28. > :32:33.successful constructor. It looked as though Mark Webber was closest to
:32:33. > :32:38.the wall of champions, just brushing it ever so gently, probably enough
:32:38. > :32:44.just to smudge the writing on the right rear tyre of that Red Bull.
:32:44. > :32:50.Luckily, this practice session has remained nice and dry and we have
:32:50. > :32:54.managed to get a full pig chat. 48 laps was the most any drivers that.
:32:54. > :32:58.That was Fernando Alonso, who also topped the timesheets. As we bid you
:32:58. > :33:02.farewell from this beautiful Montreal racetrack there is a lot to
:33:02. > :33:09.look forward to tomorrow, both on BBC television and on BBC Radio five
:33:09. > :33:16.live. Free practice three gets away at 2:55pm, UK time on BBC Two, and
:33:16. > :33:19.also on BBC Radio five live. Qualifying is tomorrow at five
:33:19. > :33:27.o'clock on BBC One. That should be an exciting and interesting
:33:27. > :33:32.session. And it is also live on BBC Radio five live. Lewis Hamilton has
:33:32. > :33:37.been the king of Montreal. But Fernando Alonso is staking his
:33:37. > :33:41.claim. He was fastest this afternoon in the free practice not only in the
:33:41. > :33:44.long ones, but also on the single lap. Can he carry that through
:33:44. > :33:48.tomorrow? I will hand you practice is in Perry and we will see you
:33:48. > :33:52.tomorrow. Thank you to James and Alexander
:33:52. > :34:00.Rossi who gave us some terrific insight. I am joined by Christian
:34:00. > :34:06.horn. That was a good session for you. It was a sensible session. We
:34:06. > :34:10.have a look at low fuel, higher fuel and both compounds of tyres. It is a
:34:10. > :34:16.bit chilly. What did you deduce from that session? You must have been
:34:16. > :34:21.pleased that it was constantly dry. Both drivers have found a good
:34:21. > :34:27.rhythm. They set themselves up into the circuit and seemed to be working
:34:27. > :34:36.well. Sebastian did not have a clean lap. He got held up by Kimi at the
:34:36. > :34:44.chicane, but it is still positive for both drivers. You tested the
:34:44. > :34:47.tyre here. Are you happy with that, or are you against the change?
:34:47. > :34:52.have done a limited amount of running on the tire. It seemed OK in
:34:52. > :34:57.the brief look we had. I am sure there is plenty of data for Pirelli
:34:57. > :35:07.to go away and have a look. It did not do anything nasty. It behaved
:35:07. > :35:07.
:35:07. > :35:11.well, so it is their call. Looks like these supersoft means it will
:35:11. > :35:15.be a big step in qualifying to use it. Do you think the top ten will
:35:15. > :35:21.run with that supersoft tire? think most teams will use that
:35:21. > :35:28.supersoft tire to qualify. It seems to have reasonable durability. It
:35:28. > :35:35.does not seem to be a bad time for this circuit. So we are not looking
:35:35. > :35:39.at a multi-stop race. So much depends on the temperature. In these
:35:39. > :35:47.two conditions, it has been no problem for either compound of tire.
:35:47. > :35:52.But if it is warmer on Sunday, things can change rapidly. What have
:35:52. > :35:57.you seen for the weather forecast tomorrow? It will be a bit wet. And
:35:57. > :36:03.Sunday is supposed to be drier and warmer. So that creates complete
:36:03. > :36:07.mayhem. But it is the same for everybody. We got some good
:36:07. > :36:17.information this morning about the wet session and the dry session, so
:36:17. > :36:18.
:36:18. > :36:22.hopefully, we can use that. Thank you for having a chat with us. They
:36:22. > :36:27.are looking really good, the Red Bulls, as our Ferrari. They are
:36:27. > :36:36.looking very strong. Ferrari have come here with some modifications
:36:36. > :36:46.that I can visibly see. And they look logical to me. From the
:36:46. > :36:48.
:36:48. > :36:51.outside, I can see positive steps. This is a circuit where speed is
:36:51. > :36:59.important. And those components look as though they will be positive for
:36:59. > :37:09.that. I have not seen Red Bull yet. Ferrari may close the gap a bit.
:37:09. > :37:10.
:37:10. > :37:15.Their biggest problem lately has been qualifying. They just need to
:37:15. > :37:21.qualify better. But they have got themselves in better shape for
:37:21. > :37:27.qualifying. They do look a bit different. We know they were really
:37:27. > :37:32.busy out there. Fernando was busy testing that front wing and the
:37:32. > :37:38.prototype tire. They did really well, with 48 laps. Loads of data
:37:38. > :37:41.for them. Fernando is a good workhorse, doing the job. It would
:37:42. > :37:48.be easy to do a quick lap and then sit back and not bother much, but
:37:48. > :37:54.Fernando knows all the information will help him on Sunday. That is the
:37:54. > :38:01.important thing. He needs to dig into those resources. He has been
:38:01. > :38:07.getting feelings from the car. He will have felt the car start to
:38:07. > :38:11.understeer, or the wheelspin start to creep more and more. He will know
:38:11. > :38:18.how to address that situation on Sunday afternoon. It will not be a
:38:18. > :38:22.new learning curve for him. That is why you put the laps in. By Sunday
:38:22. > :38:32.afternoon, it should just be like working a remote control, doing
:38:32. > :38:32.
:38:32. > :38:36.things you know will charge -- change the car's reaction.
:38:36. > :38:40.favourite with the fans, Fernando Alonso. We have seen lots of
:38:40. > :38:43.emotions from him this season. A couple of wins, but he also seems to
:38:43. > :38:51.have frustrated with some of the problems they have had. Silly
:38:51. > :39:01.problems, with the DRS wing not working twice. Once is bad, twice is
:39:01. > :39:09.
:39:09. > :39:16.downright silly. At the end of the day, a driver leads the team. A team
:39:16. > :39:24.can make decisions, but Fernando is a double world champion. He should
:39:24. > :39:31.be able to read the situation. Sometimes you have to override the
:39:31. > :39:36.team a bit. The team can be a bunch of people running around like
:39:36. > :39:44.chickens trying to make decisions. The driver needs to address the
:39:44. > :39:52.situation. Jenson Button is good at that. Fernando Alonso has been
:39:52. > :40:02.positive. We can hear from Lewis now.
:40:02. > :40:03.
:40:03. > :40:11.How was today for you? It was OK. What do you learn from a session
:40:11. > :40:21.like today? What do you have to do on your list of things? We did not
:40:21. > :40:50.
:40:50. > :40:55.learn a lot today. IN AUDIBLE.They We can't hear that, so apologies.
:40:55. > :41:01.Hopefully, we can get more information about Lewis later. Let's
:41:01. > :41:11.walk down to Lotus. Has Kimi got a problem? I don't think he has got a
:41:11. > :41:16.
:41:16. > :41:19.problem. I am sure it is a mechanical problem of some sort.
:41:19. > :41:25.There is no reason why the car would have dropped off in performance
:41:25. > :41:29.other than something going wrong with it. It will be fixed tomorrow.
:41:29. > :41:36.Kimi is one of these shrewd divers. He does not show what he's capable
:41:36. > :41:41.of until he has to. He keeps it quiet until it comes to using it in
:41:41. > :41:46.qualifying. He does not like to show his hand. He keeps himself to
:41:46. > :41:50.himself until somebody upsets him, like Perez did in Monaco. It is
:41:50. > :41:57.about confidence. If the driver has confidence, he does not have to show
:41:57. > :42:06.it to the world. You can come down the straight and come into the pits
:42:06. > :42:15.and do a very good lap, but not show it in the lap time. Kimi is my tip
:42:15. > :42:25.for this race. Lewis is very good at straight-line speed. Kimi needs to
:42:25. > :42:30.
:42:30. > :42:34.make up a bit for Monaco. If you lose points, they are gone forever.
:42:34. > :42:39.So he has to try and pull Sebastian Vettel back again to make sure the
:42:39. > :42:43.championship stays alive going into the second half of the season.
:42:43. > :42:48.important is it here in terms of tire temperature? The track
:42:48. > :42:51.temperature has been low today, 20 degrees and lower. Who will struggle
:42:51. > :43:00.with getting the temperature up, and what can drivers do to make sure
:43:00. > :43:09.they get that heat in? The supersoft tire and the medium tire,
:43:09. > :43:15.theoretically, there should not be a big change between them. But while
:43:15. > :43:21.you are coming down those straits, the rear wheels are slipping on the
:43:21. > :43:26.ground because you are driving the car forward. So it is spinning and
:43:26. > :43:36.creating heat. The front tyres are doing nothing. So you lose tyre
:43:36. > :43:36.
:43:36. > :43:46.temperature. That is the problem. But that has always happened.
:43:46. > :43:50.
:43:50. > :44:00.who comes to terms with that best. Tyre temperature is a thing, but it
:44:00. > :44:04.is more important to have that front tyre and rear tire balance. You can
:44:04. > :44:13.see the complication of the front brakes. That is all about managing
:44:13. > :44:18.the air flow to keep the brakes to. That is the balance the engineers
:44:18. > :44:23.will be working on, how much more of that they should do, how much more
:44:23. > :44:26.break temperature you can dip into the tyres but make sure you don't
:44:26. > :44:31.overheat the rear tyres. That is what they will be trying to decide
:44:31. > :44:37.on. We have been talking about Lewis and braking, because he has come
:44:37. > :44:47.clean and said he has a problem. How do you assess his performance in
:44:47. > :44:49.
:44:50. > :44:54.that last session? You have to stamp on the brakes. You are forced to. A
:44:54. > :44:58.lot of us are breaking when turning into fast corners, and it is a fine
:44:58. > :45:04.line. But Lewis has to stamp on the brakes. As long as the car response
:45:04. > :45:09.to it. His problem is that after he stamps on the brakes, you are trying
:45:09. > :45:14.to control it because you are losing their grip, so you can't break so
:45:14. > :45:23.hard. It makes the car more unstable. In the McLaren, he was
:45:23. > :45:28.happy. He could feel this, could feel the grip level diminishing.
:45:28. > :45:32.They break with the left foot in these cars. His left foot and the
:45:32. > :45:35.car were talking to each other. In the Mercedes, his left foot and the
:45:35. > :45:44.tyre grip are not quite talking to each other as well as they should
:45:44. > :45:47.be. It is not such a big problem on this course. Is the reason that
:45:47. > :45:52.Nicole doesn't have that issue because he has driven the car more,
:45:52. > :45:56.or is it to do with his driving style? It is because he has driven
:45:56. > :46:03.it more. You get used to things. Lewis was with McLaren for many
:46:03. > :46:07.years. He will have developed with that system. Then he moved to
:46:07. > :46:11.Mercedes and it is a bit like a light switch. Nicole has been there
:46:11. > :46:21.for awhile so he has had trained half years of working with that
:46:21. > :46:21.
:46:21. > :46:26.system. For Lewis, he has gone past the light switch bit. He is on a
:46:26. > :46:29.dimmer switch now! And he is turning it brighter all the time. He is
:46:29. > :46:37.coming to terms with it, and the team are coming to terms with him as
:46:37. > :46:43.well. They are understanding him when he asks for something. He will
:46:43. > :46:49.fill out a sheet rating aspects from zero to ten, and they are
:46:49. > :46:58.understanding what he is saying. A seven can be a problem, three, they
:46:58. > :47:02.can get away with. It will be interesting with the two of them,
:47:02. > :47:12.and Lewis being the master of this track. Nico Rosberg is spectacular
:47:12. > :47:14.at the moment. What I was saying was, you came to Mercedes and you
:47:14. > :47:18.were teamed up with Michael Schumacher seven times world
:47:18. > :47:24.champion, race winner, for three years. You never complained once.
:47:24. > :47:27.You never saw this down and out bloke because he was with this hero
:47:27. > :47:31.of a team-mate. Lewis Hamilton, he has won lots of races, lots more
:47:31. > :47:35.than Nico Rosberg, but has never complained about it once and as Nico
:47:35. > :47:40.said, I have learned from everybody I have worked with, engineers,
:47:40. > :47:45.catering staff, team principals, or drivers. I learn about something. He
:47:45. > :47:49.said my mentality is about taking what they do and saying, can I do
:47:49. > :47:52.something better because he does it. I will adapt, he says, so I love
:47:52. > :47:58.having a competitive team made because I am learning as much as
:47:58. > :48:04.anybody else. It is good to hear the story unfolds, very steely Nico
:48:04. > :48:09.Rosberg. We can hear from Mark Webber.
:48:09. > :48:15.You have running rain and shine. The car competitive in both conditions?
:48:15. > :48:18.We did pretty well, in wet, the inter-is felt comfortable. It is
:48:18. > :48:21.tricky, get having the together in those conditions, you can lose lap
:48:21. > :48:26.time but the car seemed good in those conditions. We did everything
:48:26. > :48:30.we could do in the next part of P2, which was have a look at the
:48:30. > :48:35.prototype tyre and focus on the efforts on this weekend's Grand
:48:35. > :48:38.Prix. It has been a long run of work. It is a tricky venue, a lot of
:48:38. > :48:47.people going off but in the end we got the maximum from the scenario
:48:47. > :48:53.today. -- How important is qualifying with the DRS owns?
:48:53. > :49:02.important, it is not so easy on this circuit. Strategy and tyres is keen.
:49:02. > :49:09.Your thoughts on the prototype tyre? It behaved pretty well. Yet, we will
:49:09. > :49:16.see what the information the guys can get, it would be nice to get the
:49:16. > :49:20.information, we lost time on P1. We lost the data from part --
:49:20. > :49:26.Barcelona. Would you like to see it used in Silverstone? It does not
:49:26. > :49:29.worry me. You have to love Mark Webber, always says it as it is. We
:49:29. > :49:33.will show you around a bit, not your normal type of paddock. It is a
:49:33. > :49:41.little bit dull, to be completely honest because we haven't got all
:49:41. > :49:44.the hospitality units and everybody uses these kind of, well, bland
:49:44. > :49:48.tents, for want of a better word and cabins. What is going on over here?
:49:48. > :49:56.We have got a Mercedes press conference. Are any drivers in
:49:56. > :50:01.there? Just the drivers, pressed to have a chat with people. Let's not
:50:01. > :50:06.walk into the Pirelli tyres. A word about the tyres. Paul Hembery was
:50:06. > :50:10.supposed to be in a team boss press conference this afternoon. Let's let
:50:10. > :50:16.these tyres come through. He is the motorsport director of Pirelli, just
:50:16. > :50:18.as the tyres go pastors. Marvellous timing, Pirelli. However, Paul
:50:19. > :50:24.Hembery on advice of lawyers has pulled out of this press conference
:50:24. > :50:28.and will not be talking, quite significant, do you think? It is
:50:28. > :50:34.going to the arbitration, so anything said now you cannot
:50:34. > :50:36.retrace. It is better to say nothing. If you have journalists
:50:36. > :50:40.asking questions it is better to say nothing. You can't get out of it
:50:40. > :50:44.unless you have a legal way of getting out of it and if they say
:50:44. > :50:47.no, he can get out of the ice conference which in theory he should
:50:47. > :50:52.not do. He has gone the right route because it is going to arbitration
:50:52. > :51:00.and you have to make sure you do not say things. Can I shows the body
:51:00. > :51:05.tyre? You can show me. That is an intermediate tyre. This is the dry
:51:05. > :51:09.weather tyre. It is perfect, this tyre has run on the track. What I am
:51:09. > :51:14.saying about the wheels slipping, you can see on the rear tyre here,
:51:14. > :51:19.you can see this part of the tyre, it is rolling and as the tyre is
:51:19. > :51:22.slipping it is robbing the top surface of the tyre. After you have
:51:22. > :51:26.done one corner, it is happening on the next one because she were
:51:26. > :51:31.driving on rows of rubber. It reduces the tyre grip and you get
:51:31. > :51:35.more wheelspin. You get higher pressures in the tyre, that means
:51:35. > :51:41.you have more wheelspin so it is a spiral to nowhere. The only thing
:51:41. > :51:45.you can do is not go on the throttle so hard. You have to read those
:51:45. > :51:49.characteristics and problems very quickly. And then you use lap time?
:51:49. > :51:53.It is better to lose lap time in a couple of corners and get the car
:51:53. > :52:00.back together and lose quite a lot of lap time in the two corners for
:52:00. > :52:03.three or four laps macro, so the clever drivers will back off. Alonso
:52:03. > :52:09.has been through that stage today, he has felt those problems, he has
:52:09. > :52:17.reacted to it. Very good for him today. How will we be with raining
:52:17. > :52:21.here? Front tyre graining, you put steering lock on the car and it goes
:52:21. > :52:25.straight on and it goes with a problem. Especially when you have
:52:25. > :52:28.these fast chicanes because it is so precise. It is like threading a
:52:28. > :52:33.needle while you are doing a roller-coaster ride and getting
:52:33. > :52:42.through the literature caves, hitting the curb is tough. It is one
:52:42. > :52:45.of those situations, the front tyres is not a problem but the rear are.
:52:45. > :52:47.Let's hear from Jacques Villeneuve. Jacques Villeneuve, here at a
:52:47. > :52:52.circuit that is important and significant to you, named after your
:52:52. > :52:56.father. What is it like to come here? It is always great to come
:52:56. > :53:00.back to Montreal. I have lived here for five years and I am back in
:53:00. > :53:06.Europe but it is coming to a home race. It is different to be on the
:53:06. > :53:09.TV. It is a lot more relaxing. do you think is going to win? We
:53:09. > :53:13.have had quite a difficult wet session already but hopefully it is
:53:13. > :53:19.going to be dry by the time we get to the race? Alonso looks quite
:53:19. > :53:25.good. He was quick. You sounded surprised by that? They did not look
:53:25. > :53:28.too good in Monaco. They lost their way a little bit. They were not
:53:28. > :53:32.quick and slow in qualifying which is never the case with Fernando
:53:32. > :53:36.Alonso. But they seemed to be good on the long runs as well. You know
:53:36. > :53:43.that Ferrari, one of the cars you drove. How much would you like to
:53:43. > :53:48.see it in winning ways again? would be great, Fernando has been
:53:48. > :53:53.fighting every year, giving us a good show. In the past, the battle
:53:54. > :53:57.would probably be him and Vettel for the championship. Finally, this is a
:53:57. > :54:01.circuit you know pretty well and you know the wall of champions painfully
:54:01. > :54:07.well. What is it like to go into that and how hard is it? I guess it
:54:07. > :54:10.was the first one, when I baptised it and it was written, welcome to
:54:10. > :54:14.Quebec, so it was the perfect Walter hit and it was frustrating because
:54:14. > :54:19.it was the second lap of the race so it was frustrating. I hit a second
:54:19. > :54:24.time a few years later. It all was a little embarrassing. Michael and
