:01:10. > :01:14.Good morning, welcome back to China, if you joined us for practice one,
:01:14. > :01:19.if you didn't, welcome to China. This is free practice two, it is
:01:19. > :01:22.the second session of two. We are in the pit lane and Ben Edwardss is
:01:22. > :01:28.in commentary, and our technical analyst, Gary Anderson joining us
:01:28. > :01:34.to discuss what we saw in free practice earlier. Mercedes very
:01:34. > :01:38.quick out of the box, good lap times, last week again Nico Rosberg,
:01:38. > :01:44.last year Nico Rosberg was in pole position. That surprised everyone?
:01:44. > :01:47.They were good in the first couple of races and they stepped it up and
:01:48. > :01:52.they weren't caught. Luke Shuey of third. The longer corners here,
:01:52. > :01:56.they seemed to have the balance through theers and get the throttle
:01:56. > :02:00.back in and come off the corner very quickly. It seems a good car
:02:00. > :02:02.on this type of track. You can't take too much from free practice in
:02:02. > :02:07.terms of times, they are testing different things. If we have a lock
:02:07. > :02:10.at the times from this morning. We can see they were considerably
:02:10. > :02:15.can see they were considerably quicker than the re- of the field.
:02:15. > :02:19.Rosberg was quicker than last year, they have improved the car, the
:02:19. > :02:22.track conditions are changing but the two Red Bulls there, third and
:02:22. > :02:25.fourth, so that's going to be interesting, we are always sure
:02:25. > :02:30.that Red Bull do a very constructive job, they do their
:02:30. > :02:36.homework veryle well. We never see their true performance until
:02:36. > :02:43.qualifying. That's true. Mark did come out like a scalded cat, you
:02:43. > :02:47.wonder if he's revved up after the team orders incident in Malaysia.
:02:47. > :02:51.We know what happened at Silverstone? Mark believes in
:02:51. > :02:55.himself and that he's as quick as Sebatian Vettel. That controversy
:02:55. > :02:58.happened three weeks ago, this is the first time to show it. He has
:02:58. > :03:03.to go quicker than Sebatian Vettel in all sessions and qualifying and
:03:03. > :03:07.the race, he has proved a point.S This is the second session of three.
:03:07. > :03:11.It is the same as qualifying and the race on Sunday? Track
:03:11. > :03:15.temperatures are getting higher. It is very important to do your race
:03:15. > :03:20.run on the harder tire and make sure you have good stability and
:03:21. > :03:27.sure you have good stability and try a quick lap on the softer tyre.
:03:27. > :03:31.What is the latest, good news, I'm down at the McLaren garage, Sergio
:03:31. > :03:35.Perez will be running, no problems for him. It was on his in-lap, he
:03:35. > :03:41.was getting ready to come into the pits, he cooled down his tyres and
:03:41. > :03:45.was going slower and in the pit lane he just lost control and did
:03:46. > :03:50.exactly what Lewis Hamilton did a few years ago, watching his team-
:03:50. > :03:56.mates and took the wrong tips. He crashed and did some damage to the
:03:56. > :04:00.nose, it was an old speck nose, no problem, they put the new one on.
:04:00. > :04:04.He will go out in free practice. You were talking about the sun, it
:04:04. > :04:08.is beautiful here, it makes such a difference to last year. The track
:04:08. > :04:13.temperature 35 degrees, and the air temperature 22 degrees.
:04:13. > :04:17.That has gone up a bit since this morning, it was 30 degrees. It is
:04:17. > :04:20.warmer. I wonder if we can see the incident from Sergio Perez, if you
:04:20. > :04:27.didn't catch it earlier, this is what we were talking about. Coming
:04:27. > :04:30.in off the track here straight up into the pit lane and he locked it
:04:30. > :04:35.up, front tyres no temperature in them. From a team point of view
:04:35. > :04:39.they made an error, his tyres have got cold and he suffered the
:04:39. > :04:44.consequences because of that. are you expecting for this session?
:04:44. > :04:49.This is the true session, we will see good performance in some of the
:04:49. > :04:54.cars lap time-wise, a more true picture. We have to wait and see.
:04:54. > :04:58.The Mercedes looks pretty good. We go to the commentary box.
:04:58. > :05:01.Thank you very much, the first session was relatively quiet apart
:05:01. > :05:07.from the incident for Sergio Perez at the end. Most others got a
:05:07. > :05:13.decent number of laps in. Felipe Massa had the fewers number at 14.
:05:14. > :05:18.We saw the odd spin, Esteban Gutierrez had a moment on the first
:05:18. > :05:22.corner. Kimi Raikkonen had a spin, that is unusual, but he did have
:05:22. > :05:26.one in Malaysia. Apart from the odd locking up into the hairpin. No
:05:26. > :05:31.surprise. This is one of the biggest breaks of the season.
:05:31. > :05:35.Overall this track is not particularly hard on brakes, but at
:05:35. > :05:41.the end of the straight putting 6G on the breaks. They are going from
:05:41. > :05:45.something like 200 miles an hour to 44 miles an hour in 125ms. The
:05:45. > :05:50.brakes take a lot of punishment on that particular corner. Elsewhere
:05:50. > :05:54.on the track it is not so hard on the track it is not so hard
:05:54. > :05:59.brake as some of the others. Here comes Esteban Gutierrez, learning
:05:59. > :06:04.the Sir quit this weekend with a few incidents this morning. We
:06:04. > :06:08.should see some of the teams using soft tyre, not just yet, most will
:06:08. > :06:13.come out on the medium compound, the harder of the two, to start the
:06:13. > :06:17.session. We will see them making a switch. It does vary, they get
:06:17. > :06:22.going for 25 minutes or so. Then they will tend to put a set of the
:06:22. > :06:25.soft tyres on, that will give us an indicator in terms of outright
:06:25. > :06:31.speed between the different teams and competitor. After that we will
:06:31. > :06:37.see them do some race runs by which they will put more fuel in the car
:06:38. > :06:41.and do a series of laps to get an idea of how long tyres will lap
:06:41. > :06:47.under race conditions. Will they be able to go further than that and do
:06:47. > :06:51.20 laps on a set of tyres, that is the sort of information they need
:06:51. > :06:54.to be learning today. We will see that a little later on in the
:06:54. > :07:00.session. We will try to monitor the lap times and give you an idea of
:07:00. > :07:03.who is locking good at that point. On the new tyre, it is the harder,
:07:03. > :07:08.the medium compound tyre. Jenson Button about to go out to start the
:07:08. > :07:16.second practice something he. We have a few cars out already,
:07:16. > :07:21.Gutierrez, Richie Vernon, Chilton has gone out. The Daniel Ricciardo
:07:21. > :07:25.is out there, Paul di Resta is waiting for the signal to come from
:07:25. > :07:30.the full senior team to send him on his way and put behind them the
:07:30. > :07:33.rather disastrous pit stops they suffered last time out in Malaysia
:07:33. > :07:41.where they lost so much time. There is the man who leads the World
:07:41. > :07:46.Championship, Sebatian Vettel after the controversial win in Malaysia.
:07:46. > :07:49.He leads the event and by nine points over the winner of the first
:07:49. > :07:54.Grand Prix, Kimi Raikkonen. Mark Webber is currently third, Anthony
:07:54. > :08:01.Hamilton is fourth. A good couple of -- Lewisham ham is fourth, a
:08:02. > :08:05.good couple of consistent finshes for him. This is turn three, a
:08:05. > :08:15.tight left-hander, wide mid-corner. Tentative on the power, perhaps.
:08:15. > :08:15.
:08:15. > :08:57.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 41 seconds
:08:57. > :09:01.Let's listen as he comes along flat gradually starts to open up. This
:09:01. > :09:06.is one of the longest straights in Formula One. There is the car off
:09:06. > :09:09.in the distance, Jenson Button is closer to us, and behind him is
:09:09. > :09:15.Esteban Gutierrez. McLaren have come with quite a lot of new parts
:09:15. > :09:20.for their cars. We know that they struggle, particularly in Australia,
:09:20. > :09:22.they have made progress in Malaysia as well. But Gary, I know you have
:09:22. > :09:27.been having a bit of a look around the McLaren what have they changed
:09:27. > :09:30.on that car and what are they hoping for this weekend? They are
:09:30. > :09:34.hoping to make progress. They started in Australia very poor low.
:09:34. > :09:38.And one of the things with the car is the concept, the package of the
:09:38. > :09:42.car is quite good, as long as they haven't exploited some of the
:09:42. > :09:51.detail on it. It is about getting those things to work together. Here
:09:51. > :09:56.they have a exhaust exit, trying to make them work with the exhaust
:09:56. > :10:01.system. The high velocity of the exhaust system into the bottom of
:10:01. > :10:06.the rear brakebacks, and that creates force on the back of the
:10:06. > :10:09.car. We call that the coke bottle, with the brakes and the body of the
:10:09. > :10:14.car working together. They have those modifications had this
:10:14. > :10:18.morning. This morning Jenson ran it but Sergio didn't. He has gone out
:10:18. > :10:23.of the pits, and the engine covers are the same now, both cars up to
:10:23. > :10:26.the same spescation. They were happy this morning it was a step
:10:26. > :10:30.forward. In Malaysia they were reasonably competitive and they
:10:30. > :10:34.will try to be more competitive here while they try to regroup and
:10:34. > :10:39.get enough stuff made for the first of the European races in Barcelona.
:10:39. > :10:49.That will be their target. Jenson Button heading down the long
:10:49. > :11:00.
:11:00. > :11:05.Button, just getting tyres sorted. This is likely to be a quick lap
:11:05. > :11:15.now. This is where he crosses the line. On to a flying lap. That lap
:11:15. > :11:34.
:11:34. > :11:37.not particularly special. But let's goes fastest. It looked lairy on
:11:37. > :11:42.the exit of the last corn he, he held it together pretty well.
:11:42. > :11:52.Hamilton has set the pace in the early stage, he's on the harder of
:11:52. > :11:55.the two compound of tyres. Giedo van der Garde coming down on
:11:55. > :11:58.passing Romain Grosjean, and that all got a bit confusing, I don't
:11:59. > :12:02.know if he thought Grosjean would let him through or quite what was
:12:02. > :12:06.going on there. But Giedo van der Garde and Romain Grosjean getting
:12:06. > :12:16.through the incident without any problem. Just to tell you that
:12:16. > :12:16.
:12:16. > :12:26.Charles Pic is out in the other Caterham now. We saw the other
:12:26. > :12:37.
:12:37. > :12:43.Caterham driver, he was the slowest of the 22 drivers out there. That
:12:43. > :12:49.is Max Chilton in The Marriage Plot, stopping on -- the Marussia,
:12:49. > :12:53.stopping there trying to get out of the way, it look like a mechanical
:12:53. > :13:02.problem on Marussia at the moment. We gather that Charles Pic has been
:13:02. > :13:05.reporting a steering problem on his Caterham. Maybe it is a steering
:13:05. > :13:15.wheel problem, maybe it is not connected in. Gary what have you
:13:15. > :13:16.
:13:16. > :13:23.got for us? We will try to find out in the pit lane, the steering works
:13:23. > :13:27.by the hide drollics, and the clutch. If you have a hide drollic
:13:27. > :13:33.leak the system will fail. You need to get back to the pits before you
:13:33. > :13:42.use it all. Not changing the gear means he's not using the system and
:13:42. > :13:46.shouldn't leak oil. Maybe the same has happened to Chilton. Huge
:13:46. > :13:51.amount of interest against both Red Bull and how they compare. Vettel
:13:51. > :14:01.is faster in the first sector, and Vettel in the second sector. Looks
:14:01. > :14:01.
:14:02. > :14:10.as though they are evenly matched. Webber is fastest in the second
:14:10. > :14:15.sector. Working the car hard as you can see, he's over the kerb, 1.37.7,
:14:15. > :14:19.not as quick as Rosberg. Rosberg has set the pace, and Webber a
:14:19. > :14:23.fraction off that. Let's see if Vettel is quicker, he uses a lot of
:14:23. > :14:33.road himself, on to the DRS as the rear flap opens. It is not good
:14:33. > :14:39.enough. Webber has the edge over Vettel and Rosberg over Hamilton.
:14:39. > :14:43.There goes Jenson Button a fifth- fastest time. Looking at Perez
:14:43. > :14:49.followed by Grosjean, Grosjean has scored points in Formula One for
:14:49. > :14:53.the first time in his career 12 month ago here. He had done a
:14:53. > :14:57.little Formula One before that season, a partial season, last year
:14:57. > :15:07.was his first opportunity to score points. He has scored points in
:15:07. > :15:24.
:15:24. > :15:29.one quick lap, this lap is looking pretty competitive as well. He's
:15:29. > :15:33.about two tenths of a second down on the first sector to what Vettel
:15:33. > :15:37.had done. Second sector down a little bit on what Webber has done.
:15:37. > :15:41.This lap is not going to be an outright improvement. Off has gone
:15:41. > :15:45.Perez, again, for the second time today, we see Perez in a gravel
:15:45. > :15:48.track. He's not having a very good time of it at the moment. I think
:15:48. > :15:53.he has managed to just about drag it out of the gravel. Rosberg, it
:15:53. > :15:59.is a better lap, that was all done in the final sector. That's very
:15:59. > :16:05.interesting. The final sector is basically the long straight down
:16:05. > :16:11.and the final hairpin and the left hander. Gary your thoughts on this,
:16:11. > :16:18.in terms of speed trap figures, it is Gutierrez who is topping the
:16:18. > :16:24.speed traps at 320kms an hour, exactly 200 miles an hour.
:16:24. > :16:27.going back to the pit. Understood, box this lap. Perez coming in, no
:16:27. > :16:31.surprise. The Mercedes set up for a pretty fast speed in a straight
:16:31. > :16:36.line, locking at those figure? they are. This is one of those
:16:36. > :16:40.circuits where to be honest that straight is so long, that it is too
:16:40. > :16:44.real straights and a mix up of the last third of the lap. It makes up
:16:44. > :16:48.a third of the lap with a hairpin in it. You have to have the car set
:16:48. > :16:53.up right for the straight line speed against the cornering speed.
:16:53. > :16:57.That is where Mercedes have got a nice compromise. You can see the
:16:57. > :17:01.quickness in the first second session but the last sector of the
:17:02. > :17:07.lap too. It is a compromise to come up with. We had a replay of Perez
:17:07. > :17:11.going off, he certainly managed to hit the wall with the back of the
:17:11. > :17:15.car, and a spin for Adrian Sutil as well. That is come down out of turn
:17:15. > :17:18.eight and nine. That looked like the same area that Perez had got
:17:18. > :17:23.off. Whether it was slippery out there, it caught them both out or
:17:23. > :17:27.they are trying a little hard at this stage in the session? We will
:17:27. > :17:32.have to find out. That was an interesting line from Lewis
:17:32. > :17:42.Hamilton, going slowly, but bouncing it over the kerb. That was
:17:42. > :17:58.
:17:58. > :18:04.eye on Perez? I am, one of the things I have noticed is he has
:18:04. > :18:08.flat spots all round the tyres, but the right-hand rear tyre has gone
:18:08. > :18:17.straight through to the canvas and the left-hand one all the way
:18:17. > :18:21.through to the canvas. The back I would imagine he locked the brake
:18:21. > :18:24.on the rear entry, it is like pulling the hand brake on a normal
:18:24. > :18:29.car and the rear goes past you. It is one of those things, you haven't
:18:29. > :18:34.that many sets of tyres to throw away. Nice to see David Coulthard
:18:34. > :18:37.doing his research in the viewing gallery of Red Bull, wonder if he
:18:37. > :18:43.can sense any atmosphere that exists between the two drivers
:18:43. > :18:46.there. Let's get some news from Jenny about Max Chilton. What have
:18:46. > :18:49.Jenny about Max Chilton. What have you learned? It appears it did stop
:18:49. > :18:53.out on track, an engine kill, something to do with, they are not
:18:53. > :18:57.sure until they get the car back. Something to do with the oil system,
:18:58. > :19:01.a protective system that cut n kills the engine, leaves Max out on
:19:01. > :19:04.the track but when they get back they will do a thorough
:19:04. > :19:06.investigation and work out what has investigation and work out what has
:19:06. > :19:10.gone wrong. It is good to know it is not too
:19:10. > :19:14.serious, but the loss of track time is key. He won't be allowed back
:19:14. > :19:19.out in the session. It will hurt over the weekend, losing these kind
:19:19. > :19:24.of laps early on in the weekend that can dictate how the whole rest
:19:24. > :19:28.of your weekend goes. Gary, it is, to lose one of these sessions for
:19:28. > :19:32.any team, particularly for a young driver. It can be quite painful
:19:32. > :19:36.can't it? Every lap you do you find a new experience, you learn more
:19:36. > :19:40.about the car and the track and how it all works together. Just going
:19:40. > :19:44.to that oil kill that Jenny was talking about. It is a system on
:19:44. > :19:48.the car where you are measuring the oil pressure, if the oil pressure
:19:48. > :19:55.drops below a certain amount it will switch the engine off. You use
:19:55. > :19:59.that during practice. You usually disarm it during the race, because
:19:59. > :20:03.sensors can also fail. You don't want to stop on a race because of
:20:03. > :20:13.that failure. You will take that out of the system for the race. For
:20:13. > :20:16.
:20:16. > :20:21.practice it is good to see it ago, Lewis Hamilton is fastest in
:20:21. > :20:25.the first sector than Rosberg was. Not as quick in the second sector.
:20:26. > :20:30.He has lost nearly three tenths of a second to Rosberg in the second
:20:30. > :20:40.sector. Now he's on to the long straight where he saw the Mercedes
:20:40. > :21:04.
:21:04. > :21:07.slower, we know how well Rosberg goes around the track Giedo van der
:21:07. > :21:12.Garde has had a spin there, went over the grass bit on the outside.
:21:12. > :21:21.Back in, comes out of him, such a fast approach that corner. They go
:21:21. > :21:30.in it seems almost flat out, this didn't have the grip to respond to
:21:30. > :21:34.that. He has continued and no other major fall-out from that. Gary, I'm
:21:34. > :21:41.sure you remember last year in qualifying, when we were covering
:21:41. > :21:46.it and the two Mercedes were looking great, there was that lap
:21:46. > :21:51.put in early on for Nico, Schumacher asked what lap time he
:21:52. > :21:57.did, and he said that was good, that gave us an indication of how
:21:57. > :22:04.well he was driving. It was seven tenths of a second from Schumacher.
:22:04. > :22:10.He had done a lap he thought was pretty megaand Nico was seven
:22:10. > :22:18.tenths quicker, it got him scratching the head. Ever driver as
:22:18. > :22:22.-- has a track that suits the way he drives. And this is Nico's, he
:22:22. > :22:27.has led all three years previously for Mercedes, he has led the race
:22:27. > :22:34.at some point in time at this track. It is just a track that gels with
:22:34. > :22:40.him. Have a look at the data on the box,
:22:40. > :22:46.box, box. We will look at that. They are going for the option tyre,
:22:46. > :22:56.the soft tyre will be put on the car soon. Everyone on their medium
:22:56. > :23:09.
:23:09. > :23:13.except Richie Vernon -- Pontus is Max Chilton there, a bit
:23:13. > :23:17.frustrating for him to sit out the whole rest of the session without
:23:17. > :23:21.getting any meaningful laps in. He hadn't completed a flying lap at
:23:21. > :23:25.all. He had done a couple of installation laps. You are at
:23:25. > :23:31.McLaren, what is going on there Gary? Keeping an eye on them,
:23:31. > :23:39.Jenson Button his car happy. They have changed the rear anti-roll bar
:23:39. > :23:44.in his car, that stops the car falling around corners. If you put
:23:44. > :23:50.a hard one there is less traction and softer a bit more oversteer but
:23:50. > :23:55.more traction. I can't see if it is bigger or smaller one. Sergio Perez
:23:55. > :23:58.when he came in the brakes themselves are full of stones, the
:23:59. > :24:03.brake nuts on these things are really fairly complicate. They have
:24:03. > :24:07.to come off to get the stones out. It such a small clearance inside
:24:07. > :24:11.there, it is very easy for a stone to get wedged and work its way and

:25:40. > :25:46.not my main remit in this role. Obviously I have an oversight. I'm

:27:32. > :27:36.talking to us. Mark Webber has now put on the soft tyre, and immediate
:27:36. > :27:41.low is up on the splits. No surprise there. He has taken about
:27:41. > :27:45.four tenths out of the first split time. Just want to make a note that
:27:45. > :27:51.Frenando Alonso, between the Mercedes and The Red House on the
:27:51. > :27:55.initial tyre run, the medium compound tyre, that is a good
:27:55. > :27:59.effort by Ferrari, looking more confident in the abilities of the
:27:59. > :28:04.car. They are in the hunt pace-wise, if you look at how they put in a
:28:04. > :28:06.decent lap this morning already. Webber here already up again on the
:28:06. > :28:11.second split. Beating anybody else's time into that second split.
:28:11. > :28:16.Now the third split, of course, as we know, is mainly about a straight
:28:16. > :28:20.line. So it is unlikely the soft tyres will have such a big effect
:28:20. > :28:27.on the sector time, they will help as he gets on the brakes and gets
:28:27. > :28:32.the power down out of the hairpin. Let's just see how clean this is.
:28:32. > :28:35.Looking very neat and tidy Mark Webber. Last year he passed Vettel

:29:03. > :29:11.on those tyres than the medium compound tyre. Gary I know you are
:29:11. > :29:16.locking around pit lane be that is a big jump, Webber going from 1.37
:29:16. > :29:19.to 1.37? That may be fuel lower. We are expecting half a second to
:29:19. > :29:24.eight tenths of a second between the medium and soft tyre in the lap
:29:24. > :29:29.time. I would imagine he has taken fuel out to see what it will be
:29:29. > :29:33.like in qualifying. I'm sure it is not low fuel but lower fuel. The
:29:33. > :29:37.Mercedes garage, looking at Lewis Hamilton after a few laps, he's sat
:29:37. > :29:41.in the car. They are fiddling around with the front brake. They
:29:42. > :29:48.have got one front brake that Lewis Hamilton's right-hand brake,
:29:48. > :29:52.without looking at it has holes in the top of it to let heat out of it,
:29:52. > :29:57.but the right-hand break doesn't have that. That is because the tyre
:29:57. > :30:05.temperatures and everything isn't the same. The air coming out of the
:30:05. > :30:10.brakes is 700-800 degrees, it can help warm the tyre up very quickly.
:30:10. > :30:15.You need both front tyres up to the right temperature quickly. He's
:30:15. > :30:20.going out on the soft tyre next. It will be interesting to see what the
:30:20. > :30:24.two Mercedes tyres can do with it. The softerer the tyre more traction
:30:24. > :30:32.you get. We have to wait and see that all the cars can make the best
:30:32. > :30:42.use out of the softer tyre. Here is Esteban Gutierrez in the
:30:42. > :30:43.
:30:43. > :30:47.Sauber, he is about to complete a lap. That is his best lap so far.
:30:47. > :30:53.It put him 16th. He is on the medium compound. The white wall

:30:56. > :31:06.inside front. Still looking a little bit scrappy. We will see
:31:06. > :31:11.what happens when he puts the soft tyre on. Button still on the medium

:35:35. > :35:38.disappointed not to be driving, to misout this weekend was
:35:38. > :35:43.disappointing, but having the Chinese driver makes sense. I want

:35:57. > :36:00.enjoy as much as we can. What are Caterham saying about the car?
:36:00. > :36:08.weren't expecting the gap to be that big, half a second. We are
:36:08. > :36:12.doing the best we can. We have brought forward the changes from
:36:12. > :36:16.Barcelona to Bahrain, so the race drivers can have as much time in
:36:16. > :36:21.the new car. We will see what happens. We have high hopes and
:36:21. > :36:26.fingers crossed we will be able to jump back in front of Marussia.
:36:26. > :36:30.Everyone asks about Barcelona, that seems to be the usual place, it is
:36:30. > :36:32.logistics and people having time to upgrade, but also the fact it is so
:36:32. > :36:36.much closer to Britain. But Caterham reacting to the problems
:36:36. > :36:40.that you are facing, so hopefully next time out you can be a little
:36:40. > :36:48.bit more competitive? We made a decision at the end of last year
:36:48. > :36:53.and beginning this of this year to focus on the 2014 car. Expected the
:36:53. > :36:58.2012 car would carry over to 2013 and we would stay in the position
:36:58. > :37:02.with Marussia. The fact it hasn't happened has changed the game plan.
:37:02. > :37:06.We were forced to bring more upgrades than we thought and sooner.
:37:06. > :37:10.It is not bad thing to have somebody rushing you, it makes us
:37:10. > :37:14.work harder. At the end of the year we need to make sure we are back in
:37:14. > :37:19.front and on the note we did in 2012. You mentioned Texas, having
:37:19. > :37:24.the Grand Prix back in America and having you trying to drive the car,
:37:24. > :37:28.how important is that combination for make and F1 to succeed there?
:37:28. > :37:33.It is massively important. Austin went very well last year, not only
:37:33. > :37:36.did F1 receive it well but the fans received it well. At the same time
:37:36. > :37:41.the Americans want their own countrymen in it. To be involved in
:37:41. > :37:45.the weekend in some small way is better than nothing. At least to
:37:45. > :37:49.the next step in 2014 of actually to be racing. We will see what we

:38:18. > :38:21.There was traffic which didn't help his cause. Hulkenberg who is he

:38:32. > :38:38.Mercedes didn't get out of the way. Copy Nicosia. He's --Copy Nico.
:38:38. > :38:42.He's complaining about both of the Mercedes who didn't get out of the

:38:46. > :38:50.particular understand stance it looked like Hulkenberg did get
:38:50. > :38:54.caught up, that is down to and awareness from drivers and teams?
:38:54. > :38:58.They have all got a lap tracker. All the teams in the pit lane here,
:38:58. > :39:02.they have this little circuit that shows where all the cars are on the
:39:02. > :39:06.track. In reality these things shouldn't be happening. They should
:39:06. > :39:09.advise their driver how to get out of the traffic, and the other teams
:39:09. > :39:15.advising the drivers blocking someone to get out of the way
:39:15. > :39:18.quicker. It will happen the other way round some time. What do you
:39:18. > :39:23.want everybody playing hard ball blocking each other and the FIA
:39:23. > :39:26.will have to come down on them. The teams and drivers have to
:39:26. > :39:31.discipline themselves to make sure everybody has the best opportunity.
:39:31. > :39:37.While you are on, we have a question from a young collateral
:39:37. > :39:43.fan a question for Gary, is there an aerodynamic gain on the gap on
:39:43. > :39:46.the nose? He's talking about the gap where the nose cone is where
:39:46. > :39:51.the driver's knee would be? A bit further forward. What happens there,
:39:51. > :39:55.last year we had the step nose, and Sauber had a duct coming through
:39:55. > :39:59.from the underneath of the nose to the stop of the nose. And this year
:39:59. > :40:03.they have still got the step nose but they have sides on it, from the
:40:03. > :40:08.side it doesn't look so bad, but we have a ramp in the centre section.
:40:08. > :40:12.When the air is being ramped over the top of the chassis, it creates
:40:12. > :40:16.an airflow behind it. That airflow gets sucked through the gap from
:40:16. > :40:19.underneath the nose. It is a mechanism for trying to pull more
:40:19. > :40:23.air through the front wing by draging it through the front wing,
:40:23. > :40:27.through this hole in the nose and over the top of the chassis. So it
:40:27. > :40:32.would be a very, very small change to be honest. I would say if you
:40:32. > :40:35.were going to try to look at it in a wind tunnel. Farce what the
:40:35. > :40:39.performance game would be, you would never see it disappear into
:40:39. > :40:42.three decimal points. But in theory it should give a little bit. Sauber
:40:42. > :40:46.have gone for it. They are not the only team. Other people have look
:40:46. > :40:52.at it a little bit. It is just one of those little things that you
:40:52. > :40:55.design into the car to begin with, and leave it there. It should be
:40:55. > :41:02.better, yes. A couple of other tweets I will run
:41:02. > :41:07.through. "will the tensions caused by Red Bull and Mercedes orders
:41:07. > :41:11.last time out make the other teams cautious in using them too"? That
:41:11. > :41:14.could be the case. Most teams are cautious about using team orders,
:41:14. > :41:17.particularly at this stage of the season. There is a feeling up and
:41:18. > :41:21.down the paddock, early point in the season at which to use team
:41:21. > :41:27.orders, nobody knows the full inside story except Red Bull and
:41:27. > :41:35.Mercedes. They were dealing with what they had to cope with. Another
:41:35. > :41:39.message in, a McLaren fan he saying, "I have to say I'm worried about
:41:39. > :41:42.the pace of the Mercedes, guess Lewis is feeling a little smug
:41:42. > :41:45.right now". He made the change to Mercedes, a lot of people thought
:41:45. > :41:52.he was making a mistake, but looking at the pace of the Mercedes
:41:52. > :41:57.it is not looking like a bad choice. And another comment" Perez isn't
:41:57. > :42:01.ready for the McLaren seat, a lot of pressure for him". I don't think
:42:01. > :42:05.so, he has made mistakes but the can isn't where they want it to be
:42:05. > :42:09.yet. Perez is still finding his feet a little bit. He should be on
:42:09. > :42:14.form once the war is a little better. Earlier on in the session
:42:14. > :42:16.we saw Max Chilton pulling to a stop sadly in his Marussia. We find
:42:16. > :42:20.stop sadly in his Marussia. We find out more now.
:42:20. > :42:24.Disappointment for you, the kill system overrode anything you could
:42:24. > :42:30.do personally, just talk us through what happened? I was just starting
:42:30. > :42:35.my first real pushing lap on the newer primes and I just went into
:42:35. > :42:39.turn one and lost all power. It was a safety thing, it cut out off
:42:39. > :42:42.before the engine gave way. That is wait it goes sometimes. It is
:42:42. > :42:51.unfortunate, because this morning the session went really well. I
:42:51. > :42:55.have never been here. Me and Jules match each other's paces and beat
:42:55. > :42:59.the Caterham, but it is hard when things like that set you back a bit.
:42:59. > :43:03.We have seen the garage back in the garage, a time for the engineers to

:43:07. > :43:11.it is a technical track, you wanted the time out there to learn it?
:43:11. > :43:16.got out there this morning and learned it for the first time, my
:43:16. > :43:19.pace was good compared to Jules, we matched each other, I haven't been
:43:19. > :43:22.here before. Obviously this is the session where you really start
:43:22. > :43:28.trying things. It is unfortunate. We might manage to get back out,
:43:28. > :43:31.you never know. Can you take any comfort from the fact that he's out
:43:31. > :43:35.there at the moment and running an 11? It is really promising, a
:43:35. > :43:38.really good time. Hopefully I can get out and have a go. More
:43:38. > :43:42.upgrades on the way for you, the same as everybody else, each race
:43:42. > :43:47.bringing Mork these ones are really working? They are really working,
:43:47. > :43:55.you need updates often and as much as you can. We are getting that so
:43:56. > :43:59.far. It is giving us a nice gap to Caterham. I will let you go back to
:43:59. > :44:07.the engineers. Max Chilton losing valuable time, his team-mate has
:44:07. > :44:12.gone for the soft tyre run, has done a good job. Jules Bianchi is
:44:12. > :44:20.11th in the standings, for Marussia that is very good. Not everyone is
:44:20. > :44:28.on soft tyres. He has done a 1.38.7, reasonable, looking at the next
:44:28. > :44:33.soft runner time 1.38.2, only half a second off Hulkenberg's time in
:44:33. > :44:37.the software in the Marussia versus Hulkenberg in the Sauber. It shows
:44:37. > :44:41.you how well Marussia are doing this year. We will see if they can
:44:41. > :44:43.keep it up. The other side of the coin for Mallya. He has been
:44:43. > :44:46.struggling with the Williams all struggling with the Williams all
:44:46. > :44:53.season long. One of the only drivers not to have managed to
:44:53. > :44:56.finish a race so far this year. Two DNFs in the races in Melbourne and
:44:56. > :45:00.Malaysia. It is proving a bit difficult. Obviously still

:45:10. > :45:17.
:45:17. > :45:22.the grip to respond how he wants. Williams are in good shape, last
:45:22. > :45:31.year he had he they had two cars in the point on different tyre

:45:45. > :45:50.it a proper go in race circuit conditions. To see how she goes
:45:50. > :45:53.with that. Then maybe if that goes well, we may well end up seeing her
:45:53. > :45:57.in one of these free practice something hes maybe later this year
:45:57. > :46:01.or next year. We will have to wait and see. She knows there is still
:46:01. > :46:03.plenty to be done by the team to get the car right. I think she's
:46:04. > :46:09.probably happy to wait at the moment for her opportunity to drive
:46:09. > :46:19.it, until they have got it dialed in a little better. This is Massa
:46:19. > :46:54.
:46:54. > :46:58.Alonso. If he manages in China as a fifth time, that is something that
:46:58. > :47:02.has never happened to Alonso before. To be outqualified by a team-mate

:47:41. > :47:45.weekend. Nice little incentive. He the Sauber or the McLaren, but this
:47:45. > :47:52.is still a good lap from Massa, has he done enough to go ahead of the
:47:52. > :47:55.Mercedes, he has! Great lap from Massa. Remember fuel loads will
:47:55. > :47:59.vary between the different cars. It is to his advantage that he has
:47:59. > :48:03.done this run a little later than Rosberg. The track is still
:48:03. > :48:08.cleaning up. But none the less, Gary let's get reaction from you. I
:48:09. > :48:12.think that lap time from Massa shows Ferrari should be in good
:48:12. > :48:18.shape. Fuel loadss, yes, you mentioned, it was aed goo lap. We
:48:18. > :48:23.can only compare it to last year, - - it was a good lap we can only
:48:23. > :48:27.compare it to last year. That long straight hurt the engine a bit. You
:48:27. > :48:30.get good tyre performance but you lose straight line speed. As long
:48:30. > :48:35.as you are going faster than last year, everybody is moving forward.
:48:35. > :48:40.Just watching Alonso here. He's just put the softer tyre on his car.
:48:40. > :48:46.Obviously he's pretty happy with it. He has a different front end on the
:48:46. > :48:49.car. You can see outside the front wing end pit there is two little
:48:50. > :48:53.intake ducts, en mass mass's car there is only one. Slight small
:48:53. > :48:57.developments. This area in the front wing in front of the front
:48:57. > :49:02.tyre is critical to when you steer the car. When you turn the steering
:49:02. > :49:07.wheel you open up the gap behind the wing and get different airflow
:49:07. > :49:10.there, it is easy to ask the front wing to do too much and stall the
:49:10. > :49:14.downforce. These little slots on the wing and the end plates, they
:49:15. > :49:19.are all to get consistency as the driver applies steering lock, puts
:49:19. > :49:23.it on or off the car. Different combination of those Ferraris at
:49:23. > :49:27.the moment, I'm sure they will hone in to one of them tomorrow. Friday
:49:27. > :49:31.is often used of back-to-back testing of different components on
:49:31. > :49:37.the cars. It is like low they will end up with the same, whatever
:49:37. > :49:41.works best. Speed trap figures are on the graphic.
:49:41. > :49:45.Hulkenberg, the other Sauber, the two Mercedes, then the two Ferraris,
:49:45. > :49:50.it often goes like this in team order. Because the two cars are
:49:50. > :49:55.pretty much identical or should be. Vettel in 14th place, Webber in
:49:55. > :50:00.17th. No surprise in that, that has been standard issue with Red Bull
:50:00. > :50:04.over their championship-winning seasons, they don't look for
:50:04. > :50:08.straight line speed. They tend to go for the more downforce side of
:50:08. > :50:15.the downforce drag compromise. They might carry a little more drag, but
:50:15. > :50:20.they will have a bit more downforce. They always like to have that. Some
:50:20. > :50:26.tweets, thank you very much. "is the McLaren looking for competitive,
:50:26. > :50:30.is Jenson going to be a contender this weekend"? Just looking at the
:50:30. > :50:33.times so far. We are waiting for the run on the soft tyre, there is
:50:33. > :50:36.confidence that they are moving forward, but it going to be enough
:50:36. > :50:40.for them to really challenge up front? That will be guess work from
:50:40. > :50:47.all our points of view. We will have to wait and see what happens
:50:47. > :50:51.in qualifying tomorrow. Another tweet "how many spares of new front
:50:51. > :50:57.wings has McLaren brought this weekend, serg geohas damaged one
:50:58. > :51:01.with the impressive spin"? We were told by Sam Michael that they had a
:51:01. > :51:04.spare, the old style front wing was on the car at the time. It wasn't
:51:04. > :51:12.the new front wing. They are not at all concerned about that. They are
:51:12. > :51:17.not at all worried. Another one know, "new news when the passive
:51:17. > :51:21.front wing device will be used"? Gary, worth blinging you on, we
:51:21. > :51:25.wondered -- bringing you on here, we wondered if we would see the
:51:25. > :51:29.called passive drag reduction on the cars this weekend, it would be
:51:29. > :51:34.track where it would be useful, no evidence so far? Not yet. As you
:51:34. > :51:44.say, this track suits them w that big long straight, the fastest
:51:44. > :51:44.
:51:44. > :51:48.corner here. There is a reasonable gap between the as ifest gap -- as
:51:48. > :51:51.the fastest gap, but I think it is very difficult to make the system
:51:51. > :51:56.work, it will take so much set-up time during practice you won't get
:51:56. > :52:00.the rest of the car right. I'm sure most people will try to focus on
:52:00. > :52:05.getting the rest of the car set up right to make the tyres work better
:52:05. > :52:10.and more consistently. We don't see the DRS system until we hit some of
:52:10. > :52:13.the tracks in up I don't. Just because it is so much agravation to
:52:13. > :52:23.take on for these fly away races. Jenson Button just congression the
:52:23. > :52:34.
:52:34. > :52:39.line. He has gone fourth on the Susie, you will give us a tour?
:52:39. > :52:43.I have been invited into the McLaren garage, we're not normally
:52:43. > :52:46.allowed. Here are all the radios, there is Jenson's radio, everything
:52:46. > :52:50.nicely marked there. If you go around the corner, this is where
:52:50. > :52:54.they take their VIPs, to see exactly what is going on in the
:52:54. > :52:59.garage. So if we just wander through here. You will get a sense,
:52:59. > :53:05.thank you Sylvia, who set it up for us. This is race watch.
:53:05. > :53:10.Shut this so it is quiet. If you look ahead, you can see the island,
:53:10. > :53:14.and that's what McLaren have introduced into the pit garage, on
:53:14. > :53:20.the right is Sergio's car, and on the left is Jenson Button. I can't
:53:20. > :53:27.have too much of a squint in here, I can have a quick chat with Kevin,
:53:27. > :53:32.a great weekend for you in Monza, you are driving in World Series
:53:32. > :53:38.Renault. You had a terrific start to the season? It was not too bad.
:53:38. > :53:42.We had two second places, both races second place. A good solid
:53:42. > :53:48.start to the year. Tell us what you are doing this weekend? I'm third
:53:48. > :53:54.driver this weekend. So I'm really just here to be ready if anything
:53:54. > :53:57.happens to one of the drivers. But also just to learn and to see how
:53:57. > :54:03.everything works a bit better, it is nice, a good opportunity.
:54:03. > :54:08.Presumably you want to follow in your dad's footsteps? I'm here to
:54:08. > :54:16.learn and to learn everything I can and to follow the weekend and see
:54:16. > :54:22.how the team works, and then to hopefully it is a step in the right
:54:22. > :54:27.direction. We are seeing Sergio going off there, you are sitting in
:54:27. > :54:30.on any of the meetings? What are you taking away from the weekend,
:54:30. > :54:34.on the driver briefings or any of the meetings are you sitting in?
:54:34. > :54:38.I'm with all the briefings. I can follow everything that's happening
:54:38. > :54:45.in the weekend. Because I need to be ready if anything happens. So I
:54:45. > :54:49.need to follow everything that's going on. You are in the McLaren
:54:49. > :54:55.Young Drivers' Programme, what do you have to do with that. Do you
:54:55. > :55:00.get to be in the team? The Young Driver Programme is basically
:55:00. > :55:06.support in all areas, guidance in my career, and fitness training,
:55:06. > :55:09.and simulator, and support in every area. And Jenson has come back in
:55:09. > :55:14.just over there. Do you get on with the I gos, do you get much chance
:55:14. > :55:20.to speak to them? Obviously they are very busy. They are nice chaps
:55:20. > :55:24.both guys are really good guys. So it is good. Obviously Jenson is the
:55:24. > :55:34.most experienced driver in the paddock, does he say anything that
:55:34. > :55:35.
:55:35. > :55:42.can help you? Jenson is a nice guy, great experience and good for
:55:42. > :55:46.McLaren. When is your next race?In two weeks at Motorland. Let me go
:55:46. > :55:50.outside, we will have a closer look if we can, if there is not too much
:55:50. > :55:54.happening on track. Where can I go, I don't want to be naughty too
:55:54. > :55:58.early in the season. There we go. There is Jenson's car, this is
:55:59. > :56:05.pretty much as close as we have ever been in any of these sessions
:56:05. > :56:11.n all its glory. He will be going out again as soon as they have
:56:11. > :56:18.changed all their settings. Thank you very much, great to have
:56:18. > :56:22.that access. And good to hear from Kevin Magnusson as well, the 20-
:56:22. > :56:26.year-old son of Yan, a former Grand year-old son of Yan, a former Grand
:56:27. > :56:36.Prix driver himself. He drove a one-off race for McLaren back in
:56:37. > :56:38.
:56:38. > :56:44.1995, and drove for the Stewart's team in 1998.
:56:44. > :56:54.Let me tell you Raikkonen has gone up there in The Lotus Eaters. The
:56:54. > :57:08.
:57:08. > :57:12.This is Sergio Perez, Gary talk to us more about the tyres here?
:57:12. > :57:20.will been looking at Felipe Massa's tyres when he came in and Jenson
:57:20. > :57:26.Button, they have done a run on the softer tyre. Massa's tyres looking
:57:26. > :57:30.good, a little trace of graining on them, nothing too desperate. On
:57:30. > :57:34.Jenson's tyre the front tire more abused than the Ferrari front tyre.
:57:34. > :57:39.Still a problem for McLaren getting the best out of the tyres.
:57:39. > :57:43.Especially when you go for the softer tyre. As I said earlier,
:57:43. > :57:50.softer tyres give you more rear grip. If you have a car that
:57:50. > :57:55.understeers, which the McLaren does. It understeers that bit more. It
:57:55. > :57:58.makes front tyre grainy. Sergio Perez about to complete his lap.
:57:58. > :58:04.Let's watch him through the final corner. Really on the kerb, on the
:58:04. > :58:11.exit of the corner, over the line he goes.
:58:11. > :58:21.11th quickest. Button sixth, Perez 1th on a 1.36.90. He back it is off
:58:21. > :58:32.
:58:32. > :58:38.from the engine revs. This is have to keep an eye on that, that
:58:38. > :58:45.can mark up the tyres a lot. A couple of tweets coming in. "do you
:58:45. > :58:48.think there has been a change in Grosjean compared to last year, no
:58:49. > :58:53.incidents yet"? I think Grosjean has matured and he's very
:58:53. > :58:56.determined to show he's worthy of his place in Formula One, he scored
:58:56. > :59:00.points in the two opening Grand Prixs and certainly is building on
:59:00. > :59:04.what he has done so far. He now needs to perhaps show that pace we
:59:05. > :59:10.saw in flashes last year. We saw him qualify on the front row, we
:59:10. > :59:17.saw him get podium finshes, that is what Lotus would like to see again.
:59:17. > :59:21.Charles Pic has gone across the line. We see the GP2 champion last
:59:21. > :59:25.year there. Now involved with Lotus himself. Got a very brief chance in
:59:25. > :59:28.the car in winter testing when Kimi Raikkonen was ill one day before
:59:28. > :59:33.they could get Romain Grosjean back in the car. He got his little
:59:33. > :59:38.opportunity. I think he did a good job for the team. They were happy
:59:39. > :59:43.with his performance. Another comment, "do you if he know if the
:59:43. > :59:47.track was altered at the place where Mark Webber did his wheelie
:59:47. > :59:52.from last year's race"? That was one of the images of Mark Webber,
:59:52. > :59:56.just out of this doorner he bounced over the corner on -- corner, he
:59:56. > :00:00.bounced over it and the car went up high and came back down again.
:00:00. > :00:09.There has been a report on the FIA race preview that the top and back
:00:09. > :00:19.edge of all-raceing kerbs have been rounded and shunted to stop tyre
:00:19. > :00:20.
:00:20. > :00:23.damage but not to prevent flap. You are matching Nico lap for lap.
:00:23. > :00:28.Lewis Hamilton will be happy hearing that. Bottas crosses the
:00:28. > :00:32.line on the medium compound tyre, most drivers are now concentrating
:00:32. > :00:36.on the race run. This is where we will be looking at the lap times
:00:36. > :00:46.that he come through. But they will be much slower. Instead of looking
:00:46. > :00:46.
:00:46. > :00:51.at fast lap, the fastest we have seen so far, a 13 --.35.3 we will
:00:51. > :00:57.be looking at laps in the 1.40s. That is the sort of area they will
:00:57. > :01:01.be looking at, maybe quicker in the low 1.40s. That will be their race
:01:01. > :01:07.pace, that will be on a relatively heavy tank of fuel. Not necessarily
:01:07. > :01:11.completely to the brim. But a heavy tank of fuel for a number of laps,
:01:11. > :01:16.maybe 10-12, they will be studying then how the lap times differ over
:01:16. > :01:19.the 12 laps how quickly the tyres go off, and how the balance of the
:01:19. > :01:29.car changes and all that kind of thing. That is what the teams will
:01:29. > :01:30.
:01:30. > :01:35.be looking for on the race run. Bianchi is the young Frenchman who
:01:35. > :01:38.has impressed so many people so far this year. Already he has been
:01:38. > :01:43.pushed down the order again now. Down in 19th place. But still a
:01:43. > :01:50.good lap earlier on. We were talking about Lotus, Kimi Raikkonen
:01:51. > :01:55.is currently second-fastest, Grosjean gros is 12th, they had a
:01:55. > :02:00.victory in the constructors championship. We're with the boss,
:02:00. > :02:05.Eric Boullier. How happy are you with the car this season, it seems
:02:05. > :02:11.the car and drivers this season are at a happy pace? Obviously we had a
:02:11. > :02:18.good start to the season. A little bit more tricky in Malaysia, we are
:02:18. > :02:27.back on track here. We have all the conditions for the car to work well.
:02:27. > :02:31.We are just here to surprisingly see a difference in the lap on
:02:31. > :02:35.prime. Talk us through the changes, Romain Grosjean was disappointed to
:02:35. > :02:41.misout on the upgrades last time out in Malaysia, this time he has
:02:41. > :02:46.that new exhaust, it seems to be working really well? Yes every
:02:46. > :02:50.driver it disappointed when you can't get the same upgrade as your
:02:50. > :02:53.team-mate. But you understand the situations, sometimes it is a
:02:54. > :02:59.logistic issue. And this is part of racing all over the world. He's
:02:59. > :03:03.happy now he has the same car, back to normal. I have to talk to you
:03:03. > :03:07.about team-mate, in the middle of the week we heard about you talking
:03:07. > :03:10.about the situation in Red Bull with Sebatian Vettel and Mark
:03:10. > :03:13.Webber, battling. You were quoted as saying you thought if somebody
:03:13. > :03:23.went against what the boss said then they should pay the
:03:23. > :03:23.
:03:23. > :03:29.consequences in any line of work? Some of my quotes have been
:03:29. > :03:34.transformed or changed, it is true for me a driver, it is not a normal
:03:34. > :03:42.employier of a company, but he's a raceer and competitor, it is a
:03:42. > :03:47.different context. But there is a respect for the 500, 600 people
:03:47. > :03:54.working behind the scenes. And that should not happen. Tell me though,
:03:54. > :04:02.is there benefit for you to see Red Bull warring, that leaves a gap for
:04:02. > :04:09.Lotus surely. It is incredibly loud, Romain Grosjean is revving up the
:04:09. > :04:13.car he is just going out. He will go out now and that will help
:04:13. > :04:20.things. Eric is walking back across to the pit wall. He's going to
:04:20. > :04:24.monitor what is going on with Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean.
:04:24. > :04:31.I know how noisy it is down there, you are doing a grand job. This
:04:31. > :04:39.particular pit lane and the grandstand opposite it really does
:04:39. > :04:45.bounce the sound from the V8 engines. Good to hear from Eric
:04:45. > :04:50.Boullier and that they are back on here. This track should luet the
:04:50. > :04:56.Lotus better. Last year they tried to go too far on the final stint of
:04:56. > :04:59.tyres. They got the strategy a bit wrong. But Kimi Raikkonen should
:04:59. > :05:02.have been on the podium, but as it was he was out of the points. That
:05:02. > :05:06.was the last time he was out of the points. That is an impressive run.
:05:06. > :05:11.He has been in the points every single race since the one here last
:05:11. > :05:21.year. So a pretty good record by Kimi Raikkonen. Let's just see here,
:05:21. > :05:23.
:05:23. > :05:27.Lewis Hamilton. Team radio. You want to know more. I have never
:05:27. > :05:32.seen the tyres behave this way is what he said. You can see a lot of
:05:32. > :05:42.marking up on the rear tyre, it mate be pick up on the outside of
:05:42. > :05:47.that tyre. Gary, an intriguing tyre. A lot of vibration. Understood.
:05:47. > :05:50.That's Vettel saying a lot of vibration, but he did lock up, that
:05:50. > :05:54.presumably caused it. Lewis sounding a bit confused about what
:05:54. > :05:58.is going on with the tyres? I will have a quick look and see if we can
:05:58. > :06:02.see anything bad on them. When we lock at the Ferrari left front
:06:02. > :06:06.against the McLaren left front. They look like two completely
:06:06. > :06:10.different tyres they are the same. The car does change the
:06:10. > :06:14.characteristics. We need to have a look at what Lewis was on about
:06:14. > :06:17.against his team-mate, Rosberg. I will have a look and get back to
:06:17. > :06:21.you. I also thought it was interesting when Eric was talking
:06:21. > :06:25.to us he said it was looking like a bigger difference between the softs
:06:25. > :06:33.and medium than expected. Alonso gained about 1.5 seconds between
:06:33. > :06:37.his hard tyre run and his soft tyre run, Webber gained big chunk, 1.7,
:06:37. > :06:42.Massa even more. Notness low all of them have gained quite that chunk.
:06:42. > :06:51.It looks like a bigger gap between the two compounds of tyre than we
:06:51. > :06:55.saw last year. A big understeer from Vijay Mallya, the front wheels
:06:55. > :06:59.going against the direction of the tyres. The Williams are struggling
:06:59. > :07:05.to have a balanced car. Understeer is a killer at China. The front
:07:05. > :07:09.tyres are the ones doing all the work. It looks reasonably balanced
:07:09. > :07:13.as he comes out of turn 13. Back down the main straight. Which car
:07:13. > :07:18.have you been looking at Gary. What tyres are you inspecting? I have
:07:18. > :07:22.been looking at Nico Rosberg Lewis Hamilton is still out on the track.
:07:22. > :07:25.The left front locking better than the left front on the Ferrari or
:07:25. > :07:30.the McLaren. Right front has a bit of tyre pick up, nothing too
:07:30. > :07:36.dramatic. I will have a look at Lewis's car when it comes in.
:07:36. > :07:46.you very much. Just watching ml Mallya on a very much race run here.
:07:46. > :08:09.
:08:09. > :08:12.director. Just as the cars stream past you, we had Lewis saying the
:08:12. > :08:17.tyres weren't doing what they expect them to do, are they doing
:08:17. > :08:23.what you expect them to do? didn't hear that, I'm not sure what
:08:23. > :08:26.it refers to. The medium tyre this morning was showing it could do
:08:26. > :08:31.certainly 20-lap stint. That is borderline between two and three
:08:31. > :08:34.stops. We have seen the soft tyre this afternoon going a bit quicker
:08:34. > :08:38.than what we anticipated about 1.5 seconds quicker than the medium.
:08:38. > :08:45.Which is towards the upper end of our expectation. We will see now
:08:45. > :08:48.when they are doing the longer runs what degradation will be like. The
:08:48. > :08:52.track is very dusty this morning. There was a lot of dust in the air.
:08:52. > :08:58.It is clear that the track is involved.S This the first time we
:08:58. > :09:01.have seen the soft, yellow tyres on the circuit. A lot for the teams
:09:01. > :09:05.data had-wise to take in and analyse and work out what to do in
:09:05. > :09:10.the race? Absolutely. It seems to be a big performance advantage, it
:09:10. > :09:14.will be keen over the teams to do the degradation, the long run in
:09:14. > :09:17.the last half hour, that will decide if it is a tyre they can
:09:17. > :09:20.also use in the race. That is what we will see in the next 30 minutes.
:09:20. > :09:25.Talking in general, your aim this year I suppose was to spice things
:09:25. > :09:29.up even more, last year Pierre had a really God year at -- Pirelli had
:09:29. > :09:32.a good year of making that happening. You came in for
:09:32. > :09:36.criticism, but are you pleased with where the tyres are this year?
:09:36. > :09:40.is just a reputation of the last two years. We were having these
:09:40. > :09:43.discussions in the last two years and it hasn't changed. The first
:09:43. > :09:47.eight to nine races the teams are getting to learn the tyres. That is
:09:47. > :09:50.due to the winter testing that is done in conditions where they can't
:09:50. > :09:54.gain much data. But that is their decision. That means they are
:09:54. > :10:04.coming to the races with not as much information as they would
:10:04. > :10:08.probably like. Paul I will let you get back to, thank you very much.
:10:08. > :10:12.We are watching bot Bottas in the Williams, down in 18 at the moment.
:10:12. > :10:15.We are into a different phase of practice now. We are very much
:10:15. > :10:19.beginning these long tyre runs that Paul was talking about. So the
:10:19. > :10:29.order you are looking at now probably won't change. We have more
:10:29. > :10:57.
:10:57. > :11:00.Looking at the replay. Braking into the corner, unloaded right front
:11:00. > :11:04.tyre, very difficult to get the balancing right on the brakes there.
:11:04. > :11:09.Real skill required by the driver. And the tyre just giving up a bit
:11:09. > :11:13.in the final stage of the braking process. Definitely looks as though
:11:13. > :11:17.the soft tyre is a big chunk quicker, but the question whether
:11:17. > :11:23.that soft tyre is actually going to be able to last any kind of stint
:11:23. > :11:28.length when it comes to the race? It does, from what Paul Hembry is
:11:28. > :11:36.saying, a 1.5 second gap. Gary, he said the difference between that
:11:36. > :11:43.was 1.5, that is bigger than we are used to? It is, it is a little bit
:11:43. > :11:50.worryingly big, these are two tyres side-by-side in the compound range.
:11:50. > :11:57.A bit confusing. I mean if it will be a two-stop race as Nico Rosberg
:11:57. > :12:04.did last year, you will have to do lap 12-14 on the tyre you qualified
:12:04. > :12:08.on. Which at 1.5 secondeds it will be the soft tyre and then the hard
:12:08. > :12:12.tire for 24 laps. That will be hard to put the tyres underneath, it is
:12:12. > :12:16.the two or three stops. It will be a mixture through the afternoon. It
:12:16. > :12:21.is cooling down a bit. We are getting a bit of cloud now, the
:12:21. > :12:26.track temperature must be dropping now. That was crucial last year, if
:12:26. > :12:32.you remember, Nico Rosberg set a lap and then the cloud came over
:12:32. > :12:35.and no-one else was able tole challenge his lap. The track is
:12:35. > :12:39.incred below sensitive to temperature. When we get to Q3 that
:12:39. > :12:43.could be an interesting factor. On the radio a moment ago, Kimi
:12:43. > :12:48.Raikkonen's race engineer said to him the option, the soft tyre isn't
:12:48. > :12:52.locking great for the race. By which he means we are not going to
:12:52. > :12:55.be able to do particularly long stint on the soft tyres, they would
:12:55. > :12:59.have to concentrate their race pace on the medium. That is the evidence
:12:59. > :13:04.that is coming to the teams as well, by the look of things. It just adds
:13:04. > :13:09.a little more unknown into the mix, which makes it exciting. Similar
:13:09. > :13:16.kind of race pace interestingly from Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis
:13:16. > :13:19.Hamilton. They are running 1.43.3 on the medium compound tyre. We are
:13:19. > :13:22.guessing the Lotus and Mercedes will be competitive. And locking at
:13:22. > :13:27.the race pace they are looking similar at this stage. That is very,
:13:27. > :13:32.very interesting. Button has just gone across the line at 1.45.5,
:13:32. > :13:35.that would indicate a little slower. Again, can't always read this as
:13:35. > :13:39.absolute, because they do run different fuel loads on their race
:13:39. > :13:43.runs. But you do get a reasonable idea. They will all want to run a
:13:43. > :13:51.fairly recent amount of fuel in the car so they have good material to
:13:51. > :13:55.go on. That was a good lap by Massa in that case. 1.45, that is in the
:13:55. > :14:03.same ball park as Hamilton and Raikkonen. Back on board with
:14:03. > :14:08.Valtteri Bottas here. Let's see this lap time. 1.38.2. Let's have a
:14:09. > :14:17.look at the indicators in front of us he has done five lap on those
:14:17. > :14:22.soft tyres, not exactly a big long run in this particular case. Alonso
:14:22. > :14:27.still on the soft tyres at the moment. That is interesting. So
:14:27. > :14:31.Alonso not doing a harder tyre run, he's still on the soft tyres,
:14:31. > :14:36.getting an idea on how it lasts. Gary has moved along now, at Red
:14:36. > :14:40.Bull. What can you tell us there? I'm in front of Vettel's car, we
:14:40. > :14:44.are seeing something we normally don't see much of, on the front, an
:14:44. > :14:47.area in front of the rear intake, which turns the inflow in front of
:14:47. > :14:50.the chassis, and brings it out around the side of the car. There
:14:50. > :14:55.is a very important part for creating downforce. What we are
:14:55. > :14:59.seeing at the moment is one of the mechanics, two of them, cutting the
:14:59. > :15:04.stop of the board off, they are grinding it into more of a knife
:15:04. > :15:08.edge. What happens with these parts of the body work is it sets up a
:15:08. > :15:14.vortex, you have a very sharp corner it sets up a vortex and
:15:14. > :15:17.generates a swirling lax in the air flow, that makes higher energy
:15:17. > :15:21.airflow, I have never seen anyone try to create it in a garj in the
:15:21. > :15:25.middle of a session. Especially at Red Bull. One guy working each side
:15:25. > :15:31.of the car, they are trying to get the bars to work more efficiently.
:15:31. > :15:35.It may be a telephone call back to Milton Keynes who have said they
:15:35. > :15:39.have found that it works well and they have decided to doing it.
:15:39. > :15:45.That is fantastic Gary. It shows you how hard Red Bull are always
:15:45. > :15:50.pushing, to see it during a session, it is so unusual. Doing things
:15:50. > :15:56.during the session, normally they take the parts off and do it
:15:56. > :15:59.carefully around the car. It gives you an idea of how hard Red Bull
:15:59. > :16:09.push. Presumably they will send him on his way.
:16:09. > :16:19.
:16:19. > :16:29.Webber was wide there, on the than we expected, I wonder if that
:16:29. > :16:33.
:16:33. > :16:37.is more marbles off line that we seen Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen.
:16:37. > :16:40.Ferrari are also looking strong, there is no doubt about it. Alonso
:16:40. > :16:44.currently third-fastest and hoping for a good weekend. Their third
:16:44. > :16:52.driver is a man who has been a test driver many times in Formula One
:16:53. > :16:57.for McLaren, and racing for HRT last year, Pedro Delaroso. Pedro, a
:16:57. > :17:04.new role as development driver for Ferrari, how it going, how are you
:17:04. > :17:11.enjoying it? It is good, a new team for me. But the atmosphere in the
:17:11. > :17:15.team is very good. A lot of Italians, being Spanish, Italian is
:17:15. > :17:22.quite similar, I'm basically finding my way inside the team. But
:17:22. > :17:27.already I feel at home. Is it a big difference coming to a big team
:17:27. > :17:31.like Ferrari, it has its own unique brand? Sometimes you understand
:17:31. > :17:35.what Ferrari means, just by the fact that everything is bigger than
:17:35. > :17:39.in any other team. However, I have been at McLaren as well, and
:17:39. > :17:43.another great team with great people. So in a way I think both
:17:44. > :17:48.teams are quite similar. I have to ask you about Felipe Massa's form,
:17:48. > :17:52.he seems in great form at the moment. He has beaten Alonso in
:17:52. > :17:56.qualifying in the last four times out, and he's leading at the moment.
:17:57. > :18:00.He seems renewed? He's driving very well, I don't think he's driving
:18:00. > :18:04.very well this season, I think at the end of the last year he was
:18:04. > :18:08.already doing a great job. He likes the new tyres and the soft tires
:18:08. > :18:13.tire as well. We could see this morning how quick he is on the soft
:18:13. > :18:18.tyre, in the winter as well. That is the good thing about Ferrari,
:18:18. > :18:23.that we have two very competitive drivers. It is good to fight for
:18:23. > :18:26.the constructor, it is early days, but we have a lot to do. So far I
:18:26. > :18:30.think that both drivers are performing at extremely high level.
:18:30. > :18:36.This car is so much improved from this time last year, isn't it?
:18:36. > :18:44.well I cannot say much, I have only driven this car but it is
:18:44. > :18:49.definitely a good car. I think that we are also quite competitive in
:18:49. > :18:53.terms of degradation, especially in the rear tyres, that makes the
:18:53. > :18:57.whole package more competitive. will let you get back to it. Thank
:18:57. > :19:01.you very much. Pedro de la Rosa, a veteran of some
:19:01. > :19:05.104 Grand Prix himself. He celebrated his 100th Grand Prix
:19:05. > :19:11.appearance in it low last year. There was a huge amount of people
:19:11. > :19:15.turned up to -- in Italy last year. There was a huge amount of people
:19:15. > :19:20.turned up to that. He has a huge amount of experience A lot of
:19:20. > :19:23.testing for Ferrari, and Alonso didn't attend the first test in
:19:23. > :19:26.Spain. Pedro de la Rosa did Alonso's stint at the first test.
:19:26. > :19:30.It has been great for him and the team. It means he has the knowledge
:19:30. > :19:39.and feedback from the car itself,'s spending a lot of time on the
:19:39. > :19:43.simulator work as well, and making the most of it Which end, front or
:19:43. > :19:46.rear? Front. You need get out of the traffic and get some clean laps.
:19:46. > :19:51.At the moment the pace is still, compared to the other people on the
:19:51. > :19:57.tyre, the pace is not good, it is incredible. The pace is not good it
:19:57. > :20:02.is incredible saiz Rob Smedley. It isn't, he's doing 1.46 is Massa, he
:20:02. > :20:12.does seem to be struggling a little bit. It is only his last lap around
:20:12. > :20:17.
:20:17. > :20:21.was 1.46, it is not in the ball park of some of the others guys.
:20:21. > :20:31.For whatever reason the Ferrari not so good on this particular race
:20:31. > :20:33.
:20:33. > :20:36.stint perhaps. But he is in traffic. He was find Jean-Eric Vergne. We
:20:36. > :20:40.are seeing if you are running behind other people on the tyres,
:20:40. > :20:45.you put so much more heat through them, and you suffer degradation
:20:45. > :20:51.more quickly in traffic than out there on your own. Just having a
:20:51. > :20:57.quick look to see what Sutil was doing there as he crossed the line.
:20:58. > :21:03.Nothing particularly dramatic. Massa has managed, interestingly,
:21:03. > :21:07.Massa has managed a 1.42.8 on his own. It locks like in traffic he
:21:07. > :21:12.has been struggling for pace, rather than getting clear laps.
:21:12. > :21:17.That is why Rob Smedley was saying get yourself out of traffic. There
:21:17. > :21:22.was a better lap there 1.43. Not struggling so much when he gets
:21:22. > :21:27.into clear air. Paul di Resta for Force India, currently ninth-
:21:27. > :21:34.quickest this in the session. Now focusing himself on the long run. A
:21:34. > :21:38.quick lap last time around, I don't know if he has as much fuel in, a
:21:38. > :21:42.1.42.7 for Paul di Resta. Force India are very happy about the way
:21:42. > :21:45.the car is looking after its tyres and the balance remaining
:21:45. > :21:49.consistent throughout the use of the tyres. That is so crucial. Not
:21:49. > :21:52.only have you got to look after the tyres, but you have to hope that
:21:52. > :21:57.the front and rear tyres go off at about the same level, otherwise you
:21:57. > :22:02.end up with a car which has armfuls of understeer or want to spin all
:22:02. > :22:12.the time. I think Force India have come up with a good car this year.
:22:12. > :22:14.
:22:14. > :22:22.That is another good lap. I think something fell off Adrian
:22:22. > :22:25.Sutil's car, whether it was a piece of rubber or carbon fibre. Cruising
:22:26. > :22:29.in slowly. Gary, I don't know if you have a chance to look at Jenson
:22:29. > :22:35.Button, punctured left front? come into the pits in front of me
:22:35. > :22:41.right now, flailing around, I'm not sure if it has come from a flat
:22:41. > :22:46.spot or puncture. I will try to get a quick look at it. Losing a set of
:22:46. > :22:51.tyres without a bit of drama. has fire from the undertray, there
:22:51. > :22:55.was a little bit of flame from the tea tray area I think it is OK, it
:22:55. > :22:59.has been blown out by the fact that he's now going along. That was a
:22:59. > :23:03.bit dramatic. As I say they have the front tyre away now. It didn't
:23:03. > :23:09.look like it had a big flat spot on it. It could be where you were
:23:09. > :23:14.saying earlier about the kerbs. Maybe it could be a flat spot. I
:23:14. > :23:20.only saw the back of the tyre. had a replay, the tire may have
:23:20. > :23:27.already deflated by the time he got the lock-up. Then we had the smoke
:23:27. > :23:33.and flame from beneath the car. So we gather from Paul Hembry it was a
:23:33. > :23:36.flat spot. That is what caused the puncture. Quite dramatic pictures
:23:36. > :23:46.from McLaren. We could see the flat spot there, my Godliness w that
:23:46. > :23:54.
:23:54. > :23:59.view of the tyre, we had another angle on it. Absolutely shredded.
:23:59. > :24:04.Teams trying to gather data on both kinds of tyre. For example, I think
:24:04. > :24:12.Massa, here he is, he has done some 20 lap on this set. The soft
:24:12. > :24:18.started in 42.5 and gone out to 46. If this was the race you are still
:24:18. > :24:22.doing some of the fastest lap times to be perfectly honest, even with
:24:22. > :24:28.less than good tyres. That is nice, useful information for us. Massa
:24:28. > :24:34.has done 21 laps, apart from the worry about his lap times in
:24:34. > :24:37.traffic, in fact they are looking very good on these medium compound
:24:37. > :24:44.tyres. That was an interesting comment. That Alonso had gone out
:24:44. > :24:48.from a 1.42-1.46 on the soft tyre, that is a huge loss of performance?
:24:48. > :24:53.The front tyre definitely does go away, once it starts to happen it
:24:53. > :25:01.eats up so much time especially with the long cornerers. I have
:25:01. > :25:05.been watching come -- and corner, and I have been watching the rear
:25:05. > :25:10.overstep is mass yi. It is all done in lap time f they are happy we
:25:10. > :25:18.will see on Sunday afternoon. will depend on temperatures, we are
:25:18. > :25:24.expecting weather to be similar. The temperatures have dropped from
:25:24. > :25:28.the start of the session. Temperatures at 22. The wind has
:25:28. > :25:35.changed direction, it has gone 180 degrees. But there isn't a great
:25:35. > :25:39.deal of breeze out there. It looks still across the track to find any
:25:39. > :25:48.flags fluttering in the breeze, there aren't many. It looks pretty
:25:48. > :25:52.still. Sebatian Vettel is on track. He has done a 1.42.6, he is in the
:25:52. > :25:59.ball park, definitely with the race pace, you would be surprised if he
:25:59. > :26:05.wasn't. Raikkonen has done a 1.42, that is a good lap from him. Now
:26:05. > :26:09.they are generally coming towards the end of these lap run. Let's see
:26:09. > :26:17.Vettel has done ten laps on this set of tyres, you would expect the
:26:18. > :26:23.lap time to be effective. Raikkonen has got a soft tyre on at the
:26:23. > :26:27.moment. I guess that is irrelevant. Raikkonen is doing. Vettel into
:26:27. > :26:31.turn one. The road climbs a bit there. This is Esteban Gutierrez.
:26:31. > :26:36.Not in the Sauber at the moment obviously. Where is he. He's 13th
:26:36. > :26:40.in the outright positions in this session. His team-mate, Nico
:26:40. > :26:43.Hulkenberg down in 17th interestingly enough. And Chilton,
:26:43. > :26:46.they did get the car back then. That was interesting, I didn't
:26:46. > :26:51.think they would have been able to get the car back. They obviously
:26:51. > :26:54.did, it is pulling off the road again. Marussia having a bit of a
:26:54. > :26:57.tough time of it here. They did get the car back. I didn't think they
:26:57. > :27:02.would be able to. He has gone and stopped again. If they got it back
:27:02. > :27:07.and they were able to run it again, obviously it wasn't the engine
:27:07. > :27:12.itself has failed, it must absence sor or electronics problem, giving
:27:12. > :27:18.it a signal to say there is no oil pressure. The same problem again
:27:18. > :27:23.probably, better to recognise the same problem twice today than
:27:23. > :27:28.tomorrow. Massa and Alonso has come and put on the soft tyre, the
:27:28. > :27:34.medium tyre did look OK. I'm watching Alonso coming down the
:27:34. > :27:44.pitlane, he has the soft tyre on the car and he's putting on the
:27:44. > :27:47.
:27:47. > :27:50.medium. Massa's run, he did over 21 laps for Massa on the last set of
:27:50. > :27:54.tyres, the medium tyre will hold up well in the race, there is no doubt.
:27:54. > :28:01.The question is how far they will be able to go on the soft tire.
:28:02. > :28:06.There was Chilton coming past Perez. Now do we see the car suddenly slow
:28:06. > :28:12.down, no fluid coming out the back of the Marussia and on to the
:28:12. > :28:16.camera lens, this was Webber a bit further behind. And they were all
:28:16. > :28:20.getting in each other's way. But again there was definitely fluid
:28:20. > :28:24.from the back of the Marussia. Then suddenly you saw Max Chilton slow
:28:24. > :28:27.down. That could be much more than an electrical problem this time,
:28:27. > :28:31.I'm afraid. There was definitely something coming out of that
:28:31. > :28:36.Marussia the back of it, that was going on to the camera lens on
:28:36. > :28:40.Sergio Perez's car. It made Perez slow down. Because of that he held
:28:40. > :28:44.up Webber. It all got a bit complicated. The Marussia is at the
:28:44. > :28:49.side of the track, it won't be as straight forward as we thought?
:28:49. > :28:51.it is better to go out there and have the problem again today than
:28:51. > :28:55.tomorrow morning. Just watch Vettel coming through and putting on a
:28:55. > :28:59.different nose on the car. I'm not sure what he has done in lap time.
:28:59. > :29:06.I haven't been able to look at it. He does looks a though he's
:29:06. > :29:10.fighting it a little bit. He's not just sort of like the cream rising
:29:10. > :29:13.to the top like normal. He's fighting, he's trying a different
:29:14. > :29:17.nose on the car to see if there is something wrong with the and wing
:29:17. > :29:21.that was on the car. It is the sort of thing you do when having a
:29:21. > :29:25.battle with yourself to find the best balance for the car. Keep an
:29:25. > :29:31.eye on him in the next couple of laps. We will do. Obviously a lot
:29:31. > :29:36.of work going on at Red Bull, more bits of rubber being thrown up in
:29:36. > :29:43.the air by Kimi Raikkonen for Lotus. Big chunks of Rubinho -- that is
:29:43. > :29:47.surprising. -- of rubber, that is surprising. Lewis Hamilton is on
:29:47. > :29:52.medium compound tyres with a lot of laps, some 25 laps. I'm not sure if
:29:52. > :29:58.there is a long run or he has put them back on. Interesting that he's
:29:58. > :30:02.on a set of tires toirs that have done so many lapse -- tyres that
:30:02. > :30:12.have done so many laps. Maybe they are gathering some more data to see
:30:12. > :30:16.
:30:16. > :30:21.what happens when you get to the very limit of the tyres. Marussia
:30:21. > :30:24.think it is an oil pressure problem, with oil pushed out the back of the
:30:24. > :30:32.car. Louis you are the current longest runner on the tyre. Let's
:30:32. > :30:37.try to get a lap together. current longest runner on the tyre,
:30:37. > :30:41.this medium tyre seems to be able to go a long, long way. Which
:30:41. > :30:44.perhaps will bring the race back to being a two-stop, even if there is
:30:44. > :30:49.a short first stint on the soft tyre, we will have to wait and see.
:30:49. > :30:57.Gary will tell us more on that when he has done more calculation, I'm
:30:57. > :31:00.sure. 25 laps by Lewis Hamilton on the current set of tyres, that is
:31:00. > :31:04.an impressive number. If we think how Mercedes locked after their
:31:04. > :31:10.tyres last year, they seem to have a bit of a -- looked after their
:31:10. > :31:14.tires toors last year, they seem to have a trick in the Shanghai
:31:14. > :31:20.circuit of making them last the distance.
:31:20. > :31:23.Alonso is on a set that did 13 laps more, running on the soft tyre
:31:23. > :31:29.earlier. In the ball mark there across the line. Those tyres
:31:29. > :31:35.haven't done as many lap. Hamilton did a 1.44.6 on his tyres that have
:31:35. > :31:39.done so many laps. I think that's pretty good, holding up well. Gary,
:31:39. > :31:43.coming back to that. If Hamilton is able to do that on tyres that have
:31:43. > :31:48.done 25, 26 laps, that has to mean the medium is in good shape here?
:31:49. > :31:52.It does really to be honest. It locks pretty impressive. As we know
:31:52. > :31:55.on a Sunday and after Saturday and Sunday and the track gets better,
:31:55. > :32:00.that little bit more rubber in it. That is a pretty good long run. As
:32:00. > :32:04.you say it is heading towards the two-stop race, for some people any
:32:04. > :32:08.way for sure. The problem seems to be that the front tyre is wearing
:32:08. > :32:11.out. It does mean that you can live with that, to be honest. It is
:32:12. > :32:15.whenever the rear of the car gets snapy and horrible and the traction
:32:15. > :32:19.gets bad. That is the sort of thing that is difficult to live with.
:32:19. > :32:24.Absolutely, if you run off track, mistake there from Hamilton,
:32:24. > :32:29.perhaps he has finally reached the end of any grip in these tyres. He
:32:29. > :32:34.just makes a little error up there at turn 12. Watch the rest of the
:32:34. > :32:39.lap, run it is over the kerb slightly. But as I say, as we heard
:32:39. > :32:42.from his race engineer, these tyres have done a longer stint than
:32:42. > :32:49.anybody else. Really preparing for the race. He has been passed by the
:32:49. > :32:55.Ferrari of Alonso there. This is what Mercedes work on in -- worked
:32:55. > :33:00.on in malaiseia, they didn't have enough race prep at the beginning
:33:00. > :33:05.of the season. Hamilton went in and said we need the race runs and see
:33:05. > :33:09.what we have underneath us. They are doing that, a long race run,
:33:09. > :33:14.1.46.8, the performance going away now. He has done 27 laps on the
:33:14. > :33:19.tyres. Still very, very impressive. We are almost in the final moments
:33:19. > :33:23.of this second practice session. Ferrari might be top of the tree in
:33:23. > :33:28.terms of outright lap time t looks a though it is as close as ever
:33:28. > :33:32.amongst the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull in terms of
:33:32. > :33:35.race pace and Lotus. It does looks a though we could be in for a very,
:33:35. > :33:43.very tough race once again. A very competitive race, which is what we
:33:43. > :33:48.all look forward to, of course. Vettel has done a 1.42.3 on mediums
:33:48. > :33:54.that have done 41 lap, Vettel is looking to be competitive, as we
:33:54. > :33:57.might have expected. Nobody seems to have a good jump. Three or four
:33:57. > :34:01.tenths second of advantage, it is tiny amount, we have seen that
:34:01. > :34:06.throughout the season so far. Let's not forget, Adrian Sutil, leading
:34:06. > :34:11.the laps in Australia for so long with Vettel and the like behind him.
:34:11. > :34:15.And yet able to maintain a great pace. So there is no doubt the
:34:15. > :34:19.field has closed up and qualifying again tomorrow is going to be very,
:34:19. > :34:27.very tight ip seed. But, you are going to have to use -- indeed. But
:34:27. > :34:30.you are going to have to use a soft or a medium, with such a tight gap
:34:30. > :34:33.between them. To go through qualifying on the medium tyre, you
:34:34. > :34:38.won't make it through to the next stage. Tyre management and how you
:34:38. > :34:44.use them will be as crucial as ever when it comes to that all-important
:34:44. > :34:48.session. Don't forget qualifying live on BBC One from 6.00 in the
:34:48. > :34:52.morning. We will be bringing you absolutely all the news, all the
:34:52. > :34:58.latest information and then every single session as it happens to see
:34:58. > :35:05.who can try to take pole position in China. Only a few seconds away
:35:05. > :35:09.from the checkered flag coming out. Will Massa get one more lap in? I
:35:09. > :35:12.think he is. One more across the line before the checkered flag
:35:12. > :35:20.comes out. He will get another lap in, the checkered flag is out.
:35:20. > :35:23.Alonso, interestingly, did a 1.42.49 on mediums that did 15 laps.
:35:24. > :35:27.Massa locking good, once out of traffic, very competitive. On a set
:35:27. > :35:33.of soft tyres now you can see. A little bit of a lock up that left
:35:33. > :35:39.front. A set of soft tyres that have already done 10 lap, Ferrari
:35:39. > :35:45.trying to see can we do anything with soft tyres. A little sign from
:35:45. > :35:50.Rob Smedley there, I'm not sure what that means. They want to get
:35:50. > :35:54.this extra data on the soft tyre, you can see the car running wide
:35:54. > :36:04.through turn seven. Struggling a little bit as he comes down to turn
:36:04. > :36:09.nine. He will look to complete this lap. He has been fastest in the
:36:09. > :36:13.session. Earlier on when they first put the soft tyres on T does looks
:36:13. > :36:18.a though Ferrari have got good race pace, but the big worry is how many
:36:18. > :36:22.laps they can actually do on the first stint. They will have to the
:36:23. > :36:26.top ten having to start the race on the tyre they qualify with, and
:36:26. > :36:33.it's likely to be the soft compound what it does mean is once again
:36:33. > :36:38.those guys who qualify 11th and 12th might anybody good shape.
:36:38. > :36:43.Maybe they start the race on the medium compound tyre and at the end
:36:43. > :36:46.of the race throw soft tyres on when the car is at the lightest,
:36:46. > :36:50.maybe that will be the strategy to work. We will wait and see. There
:36:50. > :36:55.is the checkered flag and everybody now finishing off their laps in
:36:55. > :36:59.what has been a relatively trouble- free day of practice. We have seen
:36:59. > :37:03.the odd little mishap, a puncture for Jenson Button in this
:37:03. > :37:07.particular session, after getting a flat spot. We have seen one or two
:37:07. > :37:14.people locking up, a bit more than they would like to. McLaren looking
:37:14. > :37:19.in reasonable shape. Button was doing low 1.42s on medium that is
:37:19. > :37:21.had done 16 laps. Encouraging for McLaren. Their race pace has been
:37:21. > :37:26.better than qualifying pace. That might be the case again. Maybe they
:37:26. > :37:30.will have sorted out qualifying a bit more as well. No doubt about it,
:37:30. > :37:36.Mercedes are looking strong here in China as we saw last year. But
:37:36. > :37:39.Lotus are in the hunt, so are Ferrari, and you can never discount
:37:39. > :37:45.Red Bull, they are the World Championship leaders. We can learn
:37:45. > :37:52.anything from today, and it will be mighty competitive. Just try to
:37:52. > :38:00.accelerate out of the corner. With throttle levels similar to what you
:38:00. > :38:04.use at the race start. Gary you have to have say that, as Kimi
:38:04. > :38:08.Raikkonen is coming in now. It is the Mercedes and the Ferrari that
:38:08. > :38:11.look most comfortable in that session, Vettel still a bit down,
:38:11. > :38:14.session, Vettel still a bit down, you can't read into that. It is
:38:14. > :38:19.still only P2 and a lot of work to be done tomorrow morning, and the
:38:19. > :38:24.field can be put down to a low level for qalfoiing. Looking at it,
:38:24. > :38:27.the red redoes seem to be thrashing, you can see when they are in
:38:27. > :38:34.control and when they are not quite in control. What I'm seeing today
:38:34. > :38:38.they are in a bit of a thrash. Massa in Ferrari a good lap, a very
:38:38. > :38:43.competitive time. It was very driverable as well. Impressive on
:38:43. > :38:47.the longer runs? On the longer runs, Alonso the same, the longer runs
:38:47. > :38:51.were pretty God. A session with a bit of everything. We will be back
