0:01:12 > 0:01:15corner. Race nine: Germany. This is Welcome to a rather unusually sunny
0:01:15 > 0:01:22Nurburgring for the German Grand Prix. It's a particularly special
0:01:22 > 0:01:32weekend for Williams because it's their # 00th Grand Prix.
0:01:32 > 0:01:36
0:01:36 > 0:01:40best guy that drove for the Williams team. They were more like a family.
0:01:40 > 0:01:46The whole team actually got the best out of everybody. We all just worked
0:01:46 > 0:01:50so well together. Look at the joy, unbonded joy in the Williams area.
0:01:50 > 0:01:57We went motor racing first and foremost to get results, but we had
0:01:57 > 0:02:02a bit of fun doing it. Nigel Mansell wins in terrific style. I want to
0:02:02 > 0:02:06see Williams win again. Nigel Mansell is world champion. OK, I've
0:02:06 > 0:02:10got a soft spot and it's great to see Frank still fighting on and
0:02:10 > 0:02:20working incredibly hard. It's the best time in my life. I no it's many
0:02:20 > 0:02:20
0:02:20 > 0:02:24years late e, but thanks to everybody who made it happen for me.
0:02:24 > 0:02:28In Formula One you want to be world champion and you want to drive for
0:02:28 > 0:02:31Williams. There's no question that the FW A-Team which I won the
0:02:31 > 0:02:41championship with in '9 # is the perfect car for me. It was
0:02:41 > 0:02:41
0:02:41 > 0:08:13Apology for the loss of subtitles for 55 seconds
0:08:13 > 0:08:19competitive and it fitted me am. I have been struggling so much
0:08:19 > 0:08:23at the weekend and then I kept my fingers crossed hoping it would
0:08:23 > 0:08:29work. All they a sudden I was up there with Nico Rosberg. And then to
0:08:29 > 0:08:35get the result I got, I am so happy.
0:08:35 > 0:08:40So Hamilton takes his 29th career pole position but has the red Bulls
0:08:40 > 0:08:46behind him. A great lap from Daniel Riccardo sees him start six. The
0:08:46 > 0:08:50Ferraris have a different strategy. Jenson Button can choose what tyres
0:08:51 > 0:08:58he starts on. The same for Nico Hulkenberg. Nico Rosberg is 11th in
0:08:58 > 0:09:08Paul Di Resta 12. The Williams are 17th and 18th and then come the
0:09:08 > 0:09:13
0:09:13 > 0:09:20interesting decision there. Do you think the decision with the tyres
0:09:20 > 0:09:27will payoff? Looking at the tyres, the soft tyre was deteriorating by
0:09:27 > 0:09:31the seventh lap and the gradients at the front gets slower and slower. 25
0:09:31 > 0:09:33lap runs on the other tyres so during the first pit stops they are
0:09:34 > 0:09:43hoping to leapfrog everybody and then you are looking at other

0:18:07 > 0:18:10a few as we've got somebody running wide as we see Gutierrez, under

0:19:13 > 0:19:19again on the opening lap. Chasing down Alonso. Indeed he's on the
0:19:19 > 0:19:24softer tyre. That's well over a second a lap faster than the tyre
0:19:24 > 0:19:29than Button is running on. Don't be surprised that over the next few
0:19:29 > 0:19:35laps Perez will make gains. Jenson will hope to stay out there for the
0:19:35 > 0:19:39tyre life on the medium tyre is over 30 laps. Whether they'd look to do
0:19:39 > 0:19:44anywhere near as much of that in the race, when they have so much fuel on
0:19:44 > 0:19:49board, I would be surprised. Is run ago head of his team-mate -- running
0:19:49 > 0:19:53ahead of his team-mate Sutil. Up front it is Sebastien Vettel who
0:19:53 > 0:19:57leads this race from his team-mate Mark Webber. Lewis Hamilton in third
0:19:57 > 0:20:02place for Mercedes, certainly not the ideal first lap for him. Two Red
0:20:02 > 0:20:06Bulls. Then the Mercedes. Raikkonen then Grosjean. Followed by Massa,
0:20:06 > 0:20:11Ricciardo and Alonso. Perez followed by Jenson Button. He's chased by
0:20:11 > 0:20:15Hulkenberg and then Nico Rosberg. The two Nicos. Then you have Paul di
0:20:15 > 0:20:19Resta just ahead of Adrian Sutil. Sutil gained on the first lap. Di
0:20:19 > 0:20:22Resta lost. There was a gap between them on the grid. They've ended up
0:20:22 > 0:20:32virtually together as they come virtually together as they come
0:20:32 > 0:20:32
0:20:32 > 0:20:39virtually together as they come across the line. As the rest of them
0:20:39 > 0:20:48come across the line. Maldonado and Gutierrez behind them. It did not
0:20:48 > 0:20:56look initially like a bad start from Lewis Hamilton. But when they
0:20:56 > 0:21:03started releasing KERS, he just got started releasing KERS, he just got
0:21:03 > 0:21:13swamped by the Red Bull cars. Then they had a bit of room to play
0:21:13 > 0:21:21with. Other than that it is a clean start. Just to have a listen, just
0:21:21 > 0:21:31at the last part of the getaway you could hear that kind of juddering.
0:21:31 > 0:21:32
0:21:32 > 0:21:40That is where Lewis Hamilton struggled. That is a side shot from
0:21:40 > 0:21:44Mark Webber. Then it all gets tight. Mark actually marginally ahead as
0:21:44 > 0:21:53they go into the apex. So they did benefit from that different
0:21:53 > 0:22:03procedure. We heard them confirming that three pack is runs had been
0:22:03 > 0:22:04
0:22:04 > 0:22:10done on the way to the grid. Well Mark Webber dropped down to 15th on
0:22:10 > 0:22:17the opening lap at Silverstone. But a much better start. He went faster
0:22:17 > 0:22:27than Sebastian Vettel on that lap. think there was contact there.
0:22:27 > 0:22:29
0:22:29 > 0:22:34Felipe Massa went into a spin. stalled. They may need to get the
0:22:34 > 0:22:41safety car. If they do you will see all the soft runners just heading
0:22:41 > 0:22:47straight for the pit. Ross medley looks upset about that. And that
0:22:47 > 0:22:53ends a record for Felipe Massa. He has become the first non-finisher in
0:22:53 > 0:23:01the German Grand Prix of this year. And his record here has come to a
0:23:01 > 0:23:09conclusion. Better qualifying last time out. Let's just take a look at
0:23:09 > 0:23:17what happened. I do not think there was contact. He had that unusual
0:23:17 > 0:23:22spin to the left. At this stage you want to see if the lap times from
0:23:22 > 0:23:30the leader is starts to drop away. We are expecting the soft tyres to
0:23:30 > 0:23:35start giving up. An early pit stop for Paul di Resta. He almost clipped
0:23:35 > 0:23:44that Toro Rosso. Still no sign of Sebastian Vettel coming into the
0:23:44 > 0:23:50pits. Getting if you are more laps out of these tyres. Incomes Lewis
0:23:50 > 0:24:00Hamilton. He is one of the leaders to come in. Getting off those soft
0:24:00 > 0:24:07tyres. And he would prefer just one more stop in this race. The teams
0:24:07 > 0:24:12who have stayed out, they will be looking at those first sector times.
0:24:12 > 0:24:20They will be able to see how much faster they go on a new set of those
0:24:20 > 0:24:26prime tyres. There is a difference of a second and a half between those
0:24:26 > 0:24:33tyres. He has come out in 10th place. Just ahead of Pastor
0:24:33 > 0:24:41Maldonado. It is crucial for Lewis Hamilton that he does not get held
0:24:41 > 0:24:51up. Nico Rosberg currently in ninth place. On board Lewis Hamilton.
0:24:51 > 0:24:52
0:24:52 > 0:24:58big push now, Lewis. This could work to his advantage. He has gone wide.
0:24:58 > 0:25:08Too much of a push. But he does have some clear air in front of him at
0:25:08 > 0:25:11
0:25:11 > 0:25:21the moment. Hulkenberg in ninth place. That was a message from his
0:25:21 > 0:25:22
0:25:22 > 0:25:32engineer. This will be close for Rosberg. The last time around he was
0:25:32 > 0:25:35
0:25:35 > 0:25:39at 16.4. That was an impressive pit stop. Beautiful by Red Bull. I do
0:25:39 > 0:25:44not think that Hamilton will have done enough. Sebastian Vettel coming
0:25:45 > 0:25:53out in front of Rosberg. I do not think Hamilton has done nearly
0:25:53 > 0:26:01enough. Sebastian Vettel rejoins the field. But he has gone out ahead of
0:26:01 > 0:26:04Hamilton. Rosberg could still be a threat in this race. The Mercedes
0:26:04 > 0:26:12cars will be running very close to one another. Hamilton on fresh
0:26:12 > 0:26:18tyres. That was absolutely a perfect example of teamwork. It was always
0:26:18 > 0:26:25going to be tight whether it you could get Sebastian out in front of
0:26:25 > 0:26:32Rosberg and that is what they have done. Mark Webber goes into the pit.
0:26:32 > 0:26:39Will he be able to come out ahead of Sebastian Vettel? I think he will.
0:26:39 > 0:26:49Sebastian Vettel has got some traffic ahead. It is a slow stop.
0:26:49 > 0:26:52
0:26:52 > 0:26:57Surely his chance has gone now. Mark Webber, that is horrible to see.
0:26:57 > 0:27:02That wheel coming off, that is just a shocker for Mark Webber. Not what
0:27:02 > 0:27:10you want to see at all. So rarely it happens when you consider the speed
0:27:10 > 0:27:13of those pit stops. The race could be over for Mark Webber. Any chance
0:27:13 > 0:27:22of doing well in this race has all gone for him. Sebastian Vettel in
0:27:22 > 0:27:32the traffic there. So now Romain Grosjean is the race leader. He has
0:27:32 > 0:27:32
0:27:32 > 0:27:35passed Kimi Raikkonen. He is ahead of Alonso who has stayed out. He is
0:27:35 > 0:27:42going to stay out on the median compound tyres for that much
0:27:42 > 0:27:48longer. My immediate thoughts are finding out whether that cameraman
0:27:48 > 0:27:56who was hit by that dancing will is being attended to. Hopefully nothing
0:27:56 > 0:28:03too serious. Romain Grosjean just did a brilliant lap. He is on those
0:28:03 > 0:28:07softer tyres. Notice looking after both tyres very well. He has got a
0:28:07 > 0:28:16chance of being in front of some of the other guys who started on the
0:28:16 > 0:28:21soft tyres. Sebastian Vettel was held off in the Chinese Grand Prix
0:28:21 > 0:28:28by Hulkenberg and that cost him a shot at podium. The two Mercedes
0:28:28 > 0:28:34cars now right together. Hamilton on the fresher tyres. Both team-mates
0:28:34 > 0:28:40want to make their own race work. Raikkonen trying to go on the
0:28:40 > 0:28:47outside, does not quite manage it. Kimi Raikkonen was behind Hamilton
0:28:47 > 0:28:53before the pit stops. Hamilton being held up by Rosberg. That allowed
0:28:53 > 0:29:00Raikkonen the chance to jump. The team have got to release Hamilton.
0:29:00 > 0:29:10Mark Webber rejoins the race. wonder if he was going to be able to
0:29:10 > 0:29:10
0:29:10 > 0:29:16rejoin. No will damage done to the car. -- no real damage. Grosjean
0:29:17 > 0:29:24leading this race. But now up to third place. He is ahead of
0:29:24 > 0:29:34Hulkenberg. Sebastian Vettel actually force. Rosberg and Hamilton
0:29:34 > 0:29:44then. Maldonado in ninth place. But we have not -- -- we have now got
0:29:44 > 0:29:47
0:29:47 > 0:29:52tyres on different strategies. Grosjean still read this race.
0:29:52 > 0:29:59the DRS zone. Sebastian Vettel getting past Button. That brings him
0:29:59 > 0:30:04up into third position. Forging his way through the traffic. He cannot
0:30:04 > 0:30:10afford to get held up by the traffic. Grosjean still out there on
0:30:10 > 0:30:20the soft tyres. Fernando Alonso in second. On-board with Kimi
0:30:20 > 0:30:21
0:30:21 > 0:30:26Raikkonen. Hamilton could do with getting past. Hamilton has been on
0:30:26 > 0:30:30the radio and said Nico is not in the same race. Nico you are on a
0:30:30 > 0:30:34different strategy to Lewis, don't hold him up. Now is he actually
0:30:34 > 0:30:38going to let him through here or not? That's the question, David.
0:30:38 > 0:30:42That's a very clear message from the team. They would expect him to do
0:30:42 > 0:30:49so. Although when you look at that gap, you'd say he's not close
0:30:49 > 0:30:54enough. What happens is you run in the dirty air of the car in front,
0:30:54 > 0:30:58they've used all the efficient energy when they pass through there,
0:30:58 > 0:31:00they chuck a bunch of dirty stuff at you and the car just doesn't
0:31:00 > 0:31:02perform. Although he's on fresher tyres, and on a different strategy,
0:31:02 > 0:31:07can you see he's having to lift up through the chicane, that allows
0:31:07 > 0:31:10Raikkonen to close onto the back of Hamilton. We picked up a message
0:31:10 > 0:31:14that Hamilton's rear tyres were close to the edge and peak
0:31:14 > 0:31:18temperature. He's maybe in a situation of losing the rear.
0:31:18 > 0:31:23target lap. Plan A for Jenson Button. You would expect them to be
0:31:23 > 0:31:28looking at a two-stop race. Grosjean is doing another lap before he comes
0:31:28 > 0:31:32in the pits. This is an incredibly impressive first stint from the
0:31:32 > 0:31:36Lotus of Romain Grosjean. Nobody thought the soft tyre would still
0:31:36 > 0:31:41deliver this type of lap time. In comes Alonso. That's early. That's
0:31:41 > 0:31:46earlier than we were expecting. He started on the medium compound tyre.
0:31:46 > 0:31:50He's done only 13 laps. Hamilton had a go at Rosberg there. That again
0:31:50 > 0:31:54gives Raikkonen the chance to close up. Rosberg has not allowed him
0:31:54 > 0:31:57through and Alonso is out again. Garry, are you surprised to see
0:31:57 > 0:32:02Alonso in that early? Very surprised. Can I only think he may
0:32:02 > 0:32:08have had a pinkure or something. Lap 12, there's no way you can make
0:32:08 > 0:32:11anything work from there. He's into a three-stop strategy now. For
0:32:11 > 0:32:14Romain Grosjean, fantastic. To get to lap 13 on those tyres doing the
0:32:14 > 0:32:18laps he did, now he's in front of Hulkenberg. That's exactly where he
0:32:18 > 0:32:22wanted to be. Grosjean is one to watch in this race. It's a brilliant
0:32:22 > 0:32:26first stint from him. About time he needs to deliver a good result for
0:32:26 > 0:32:31the sake of his career. Raikkonen, though, still held up behind
0:32:31 > 0:32:34Rosberg. Hamilton is now able to get away a bit. Hamilton able to get
0:32:34 > 0:32:39away because he doesn't have to keep an eye on Raikkonen behind him.
0:32:39 > 0:32:43That's now Rosberg's job. Lewis can push, push a bit and try to shut
0:32:43 > 0:32:46that gap down on Hulkenberg. Raikkonen will be close enough to
0:32:46 > 0:32:50look at Rosberg into the chicane. will have a go. He's on the outside
0:32:50 > 0:32:54but he's going for it! That was a lovely move from Kimi Raikkonen. He
0:32:54 > 0:32:59just makes the corner, really went deep into the braking area. Now he
0:32:59 > 0:33:08has to defend as he comes up towards the final turn. Kimi Raikkonen makes
0:33:08 > 0:33:12the move stick. Let's bring you up to date with the, certainly the
0:33:12 > 0:33:17front runners having made a pitstop, but of course those who started on
0:33:17 > 0:33:27the medium tyre, Jenson Button, Nico Hulkenberg have not yet made a
0:33:27 > 0:33:44
0:33:44 > 0:33:48have -- maden early stop, seems to have lost out because of that.
0:33:48 > 0:33:52box, box. Now that's interesting. Because that would imply a
0:33:53 > 0:33:57three-stop as well for Nico Rosberg. They're bringing him in on lap 16,
0:33:57 > 0:34:01so perhaps we are seeing this track with its higher temperatures moving
0:34:01 > 0:34:04us more towards a three-stop race than the expected two-stop race.
0:34:04 > 0:34:08Nico Rosberg will be coming in, unless it's more to deal with
0:34:08 > 0:34:12traffic. We'll have to keep an eye on that. What we were expecting to
0:34:12 > 0:34:17see was those guys starting on the medium tyre to take up the lead at
0:34:17 > 0:34:21the head of this race in the early phase. It hasn't happened. The guys
0:34:21 > 0:34:24who started on the soft tyres have been able to use the performance,
0:34:24 > 0:34:27best displayed there by how far Grosjean went. It goes to show that
0:34:28 > 0:34:32what they learn on a Friday is only an indication, it's not an exact
0:34:32 > 0:34:36guide. Hamilton is sizing up Hulkenberg here with Raikkonen right
0:34:36 > 0:34:40behind him. These two do need to get past Hulkenberg as quickly as
0:34:41 > 0:34:47possible, from their point of view. From Hulkenberg's point of view he
0:34:47 > 0:34:51will do his utmost to stay in front. Sauber have had a tough time of it
0:34:51 > 0:34:54this year. They haven't even been able to keep all their payments to
0:34:54 > 0:34:59Hulkenberg going. He is behind on his payments. They are desperate not
0:34:59 > 0:35:04only for money, but for a decent result. He got into the top ten at
0:35:04 > 0:35:08the last Grand Prix, a valuable point it was. We don't know how this
0:35:09 > 0:35:13weekend will work out but he will want to keep these guys behind him.
0:35:13 > 0:35:19Hamilton will do his utmost to go through here. It's a cracking part
0:35:19 > 0:35:22of the circuit up there you -- through the high speed chicane. You
0:35:22 > 0:35:27get downforce pushing it into the ground and just enabling you to go
0:35:27 > 0:35:34so much faster through the turns. But it's not enough to really close
0:35:34 > 0:35:38out. This is one of the DRS zones. Hamilton's not close enough there.
0:35:38 > 0:35:42Then they come through the chicane up to the final turn, then there's a
0:35:42 > 0:35:45second DRS zone and he's in! Hulkenberg is in. That clears the
0:35:45 > 0:35:49way. It's earlier than might have been expected for somebody started
0:35:49 > 0:35:53on the medium compound tyre. We are looking at this being a three-stop
0:35:53 > 0:35:57race now. Hamilton is released. Raikkonen goes with him. They will
0:35:57 > 0:36:02now chase after Jenson Button, who is the only one of the front runners
0:36:02 > 0:36:08not to have stopped. I wonder if Button can go all the way to lap 24,
0:36:08 > 0:36:1625 and make this a two-stop race? All good in the pits this time for
0:36:16 > 0:36:19Nico Hulkenberg. Back with the Hamilton-Raikkonen battle. A bit of
0:36:19 > 0:36:24a slow stop for Hulkenberg. I thought it was better than that.
0:36:24 > 0:36:30Raikkonen is able to close right up to the back of the Mercedes. Rosberg
0:36:30 > 0:36:35in the meanwhile has made his pitstop. Hamilton is running last
0:36:35 > 0:36:41lap 38. 6. That's 37. 0 for Grosjean. That tells you the divens
0:36:41 > 0:36:46in performance between the -- difference in performance between
0:36:46 > 0:36:56the Lotus at this stage of the race. Is he going to find a way past
0:36:56 > 0:37:03
0:37:03 > 0:37:07holding together very well. Dear. It looks as though Mercedes, who've had
0:37:07 > 0:37:13this problem before, during the race of the tyre performance going away.
0:37:13 > 0:37:18Look at Raikkonen, he is catching in the DRS zone. Can he get it turned
0:37:18 > 0:37:22into the chicane. He turns it in. He is past Lewis Hamilton into fourth
0:37:22 > 0:37:26place. Kimi Raikkonen is moving up through the field here. Next one is
0:37:26 > 0:37:31Jenson Button that he tries to pass. Alonso now is right in there behind
0:37:31 > 0:37:36Lewis Hamilton as well. He made a stop a little while ago, Fernando
0:37:36 > 0:37:44Alonso, he's on relatively fresh tyres. I don't think it will be too
0:37:44 > 0:37:50long before he goes past the Mercedes. These guys are on
0:37:50 > 0:37:55different tyres to me. I don't think so Lewis. I think per Ellie have
0:37:56 > 0:37:59provided -- Pirelli have provided the same tyres. It's how the car
0:37:59 > 0:38:03moves it. Battle on the brakes there but Hamilton is late on the brakes
0:38:03 > 0:38:08and Alonso cannot repeat what Raikkonen did. Hamilton fends him
0:38:08 > 0:38:11off for just a little bit longer. Just over one third distance
0:38:11 > 0:38:15completed here at Nurburgring. Sebastien Vettel leads the race.
0:38:15 > 0:38:20Romain Grosjean is second after a brilliant first stint. Button is
0:38:20 > 0:38:23holding job to the tyres he started the race with. Here comes Alonso. He
0:38:23 > 0:38:28moves to the outside. Hamilton protects the inside line. Can he cut
0:38:28 > 0:38:32back on the exit? This is classic racing here. He's on the outside now
0:38:32 > 0:38:36into turn two, but Hamilton holds the inside line, tries not to run
0:38:36 > 0:38:44too wide. You're watching two world champions going wheel to wheel,
0:38:44 > 0:38:49fighting for fifth position. Great stuff. Is Nico having the same
0:38:50 > 0:38:54problem? A-firm Lewis. Nico is suffering the same issues. I doubt
0:38:54 > 0:39:01if he said that just then. He probably said that a few moments
0:39:01 > 0:39:05ago. Rosberg down in 14th position now. This is costing Alonso dearly
0:39:05 > 0:39:09in his attempts to make sure he gets a decent podium finish out of this
0:39:09 > 0:39:13race today. A quick reminder that Mark Webber had that incidents in
0:39:13 > 0:39:18the pits earlier on. He is still in the race. He's down in last
0:39:18 > 0:39:25position. The only retirement so far is Felipe Massa, who spun very early
0:39:25 > 0:39:28on the the -- at the first corner. We do hear the good news that the
0:39:28 > 0:39:34cameraman is basically OK. We will update you further with that as we
0:39:34 > 0:39:39hear more information. That is good to hear. A relief after seeing
0:39:39 > 0:39:45someone hit by a wheel. He is being treated now, but he is basically OK.
0:39:45 > 0:39:50That's good news. The fight between Hamilton and Alonso no change, as
0:39:50 > 0:39:56they went through the chicane. Back to the second DRS area. Button in.
0:39:56 > 0:39:59Button has got to lap 22, still not quite far enough to really make a
0:39:59 > 0:40:03straightforward two-stop race. Here comes Alonso again. My goodness,
0:40:03 > 0:40:09late to the outside, Hamilton covers the inside. Now has he got the
0:40:09 > 0:40:13traction off the corner? Hamilton just again fends him off. There's
0:40:13 > 0:40:16nowhere really for Alonso to go except around the outside. Surely
0:40:16 > 0:40:21he's not going to go all the way there. That was brilliant. Lewis
0:40:21 > 0:40:26gave him space. He could have run him off the road. He had respect for
0:40:26 > 0:40:31Fernando. He gave him the room. going to the outside. There's not
0:40:31 > 0:40:39the space there, though. It started at turn one, it's still going as we
0:40:39 > 0:40:42go through turn six. Alonso can't find his way through. Vettel leads
0:40:42 > 0:40:48from Grosjean. Raikkonen to third with Jenson Button having made his
0:40:48 > 0:40:54pitstop. But Button will still be up there amongst the top group. He
0:40:54 > 0:40:59comes out in sixth place. pushing man, I'm pushing. I think we
0:40:59 > 0:41:03can see that Lewis Hamilton is pushing. He is getting every last
0:41:03 > 0:41:08tiny little bit of grip out of that car he can. We know he's struggling.
0:41:08 > 0:41:14But he is still fending Alonso off. In seventh place, behind these two,
0:41:14 > 0:41:18Maldonado. Perez is eighth, Hulkenberg ninth and Sutil is in
0:41:18 > 0:41:23tenth position. Back up to the chicane again. He's not close
0:41:23 > 0:41:27enough. You have to wonder how long he can go. Not long, he's in.
0:41:27 > 0:41:30Hamilton for his second stop. Hamilton gets out of the way for
0:41:30 > 0:41:35now. Look at, that Hamilton almost sliding into the kerb on the
0:41:35 > 0:41:40outside, slows the car down and brings it into the pit lane. It's a
0:41:40 > 0:41:45relatively short stint for Hamilton on the 15 laps, that's really all
0:41:45 > 0:41:50we'res seeing out of the harder tyres -- all we're seeing out of the
0:41:50 > 0:41:55harder tyres, less than we expected. Where will he be in comparison to
0:41:55 > 0:41:59Jenson Button? Button has gone down, I think turn one. Yeah, he's in
0:41:59 > 0:42:07behind Sutil there in the Force India. He's out just in front of
0:42:07 > 0:42:14him. That brings him out in eighth. Button out in front of Perez.
0:42:14 > 0:42:23seventh. There is Hulkenberg in eighth. Then Hamilton has come back
0:42:23 > 0:42:28out. We're on Plan B Kimi. Plan B. Meanwhile into the pits Valtteri
0:42:28 > 0:42:33Bottas in the Williams. Gutierrez has just come back out. So has
0:42:33 > 0:42:36Jean-Eric Vergne, as well. That's their second pitstop. So Bottas,
0:42:36 > 0:42:45although it's his first pitstop, interestingly. He started on the
0:42:45 > 0:42:50medium compound tyre. Lots of smoke out of the back of the moo Russia --
0:42:50 > 0:42:54Marussia for Jules Bianchi. fire. It looks like an oil fire.A
0:42:54 > 0:42:57major blow up. When you see the white smoke. That's usually an
0:42:57 > 0:43:02indication of oil and water being mixed together. The only way to get
0:43:02 > 0:43:05them mixed together in an engine is if you've put a piston through the
0:43:06 > 0:43:11side of the block. That's what a major engine blow up looks like. You
0:43:11 > 0:43:17get all the juices mixing together added to the fact that you've got
0:43:17 > 0:43:22extremely hot engine and, well, a bit of unburnt fuel there igniting.
0:43:22 > 0:43:25The car unfortunately is rolling without a driver backwards on the
0:43:25 > 0:43:30circuit. I've never seen that before. The tractor trying to get
0:43:30 > 0:43:35over to it to pick tup. It has rolled thankfully to the grass now.
0:43:35 > 0:43:40There is the race leader Vettel. He's slowed down. Absolutely.Goes
0:43:40 > 0:43:43through then Raikkonen. It takes out one of the... It's rolled to where
0:43:43 > 0:43:47they can push it behind the barrier. That's a clever car. My goodness,
0:43:47 > 0:43:51what a day of incident we're seeing both in the pits and on circuit. The
0:43:51 > 0:43:56safety car is out though. That opens up the opportunity to come into the
0:43:56 > 0:44:00pits now. All the crews are ready. Vettel in now. So Sebastien Vettel
0:44:00 > 0:44:04into the pits. This is his second pitstop. Grosjean reacts as well.
0:44:04 > 0:44:08They're on the same strategy from this point in. It's a straight fight
0:44:08 > 0:44:12between Vettel and Grosjean with Raikkonen as well. Raikkonen having
0:44:12 > 0:44:17to stack behind Grosjean, though he was a bit behind any way. This is
0:44:17 > 0:44:23good for Raikkonen, if he can get back out and line up close to his
0:44:23 > 0:44:27team-mate. Alonso's also in the pits, as we speak. Waiting for the
0:44:27 > 0:44:31Ferrari to head down pit lane. Raikkonen back out once more then.
0:44:31 > 0:44:36So Raikkonen re-emerges in third place. It's Red Bull lead ago head
0:44:36 > 0:44:40of the two Lotus and then the Ferrari of Alonso, as he exits the
0:44:40 > 0:44:46pit lane. That was quite a late call on the safety car and by the time
0:44:46 > 0:44:50they'd made that call, if you just watched the trajectory of the car,
0:44:50 > 0:44:57then the car will be moved no a safe position by now already, I would
0:44:57 > 0:45:01have thought. This is Rosberg heading in behind the Force India.
0:45:01 > 0:45:04Force India going slowly at that part of the pit lane. Ah, that Force
0:45:04 > 0:45:10India probably had his team-mate in pitting. He's trying to slow Rosberg
0:45:10 > 0:45:12down to give him the best chance to down to give him the best chance to
0:45:12 > 0:45:15get a clean run into the box. Yeah, looks like his team-mate had pulled
0:45:15 > 0:45:25out, then it's a battle of the pit out, then it's a battle of the pit
0:45:25 > 0:45:28
0:45:28 > 0:45:34crews. That was clever stuff from Force India to slow down Rosberg.
0:45:34 > 0:45:44The safety car has been out but is now coming in on this lap. Sebastian
0:45:44 > 0:45:46
0:45:46 > 0:45:52Vettel leads the field. Hamilton now seven. Gary, half of this race is
0:45:52 > 0:45:58still to go. They looked as if they were not getting the stint out of
0:45:58 > 0:46:07the tyres to get to the end, but do you think that any of these guys
0:46:07 > 0:46:17could on these sets of tyres? let's pick of these cars quickly.
0:46:17 > 0:46:18
0:46:18 > 0:46:23think Grosjean and Raikkonen could get there. Here we go. Sebastian
0:46:23 > 0:46:30Vettel picks it up out of the chicane straight away. Grosjean
0:46:30 > 0:46:40dropping back a little bit. The leader gets the chance to dictate
0:46:40 > 0:46:40
0:46:40 > 0:46:50the pace. Perez dolls have a little think about passing Maldonado. --
0:46:50 > 0:46:53
0:46:53 > 0:47:02dolls have. Grosjean locked up at the chicane. Sebastian Vettel just
0:47:02 > 0:47:09caught him out a bit there. Raikkonen in a position to put some
0:47:10 > 0:47:15pressure on Grosjean. Bunching this field up together, of course some of
0:47:15 > 0:47:22these drivers still have to use the soft tyres at some point, my Jensen
0:47:22 > 0:47:29Button. I think they have to use it. That could play into his hands. He
0:47:29 > 0:47:39has got to do that. And he will have a very fresh set of tyres in his
0:47:39 > 0:47:39
0:47:39 > 0:47:49last couple of laps. Anything can happen. Mark Webber gained a couple
0:47:49 > 0:47:52
0:47:52 > 0:48:01of places on that restart. After you, please. And Mark Webber said,
0:48:01 > 0:48:08thank you very much. That safety car has helped him hugely. Alonso not
0:48:08 > 0:48:14really do anything to catch up, but not dropping away either. Jensen
0:48:14 > 0:48:20Button is dropping away slightly. You might expect Hamilton to begin
0:48:20 > 0:48:28making progress but his tyres are that little bit older than some
0:48:28 > 0:48:38behind him. Rosberg has been told that his front temperatures are
0:48:38 > 0:48:38
0:48:39 > 0:48:43high. So when he gets to the end of the strait he will lift off the
0:48:44 > 0:48:48throttle and wait one second before he hit the brake pedal. That way you
0:48:49 > 0:48:55just take out some of the heat from the tyres. So Mercedes already
0:48:55 > 0:49:01compromised and now having to drive that little bit slower as well.
0:49:01 > 0:49:07it really is a little bit like Spain. And it seems as if the
0:49:07 > 0:49:14qualifying pace that Mercedes had has not been converted. But look how
0:49:14 > 0:49:22close the battle for the lead is now. Grosjean definitely within DRS
0:49:22 > 0:49:27range of the race. He has lacked very quickly this time. Raikkonen is
0:49:27 > 0:49:37the fastest of the three this time as they crossed the line. Everyone
0:49:37 > 0:49:47going quicker as the fuel burns off. Under pressure, no question about
0:49:47 > 0:49:52
0:49:52 > 0:49:59it. You're in a vulnerable position. Maldonado is not aim to give up.
0:49:59 > 0:50:03Perez goes a little bit wide. I think the McLaren is through. Adrian
0:50:03 > 0:50:12Sutil kicking up the dust in the background. All the drivers trying
0:50:12 > 0:50:21to avoid that dust. You do not want to get back onto your tyres. Perez
0:50:21 > 0:50:31never afraid of going wheel to wheel. Stays wide, cuts back to the
0:50:31 > 0:50:40
0:50:40 > 0:50:50inside. He just lets it roll around the outside. Sebastian Vettel being
0:50:50 > 0:50:55
0:50:55 > 0:51:02encouraged their over the radio. He can try to pull away. These three
0:51:02 > 0:51:08cars still looking to be the likely once. Grosjean is in. 20 laps to go
0:51:08 > 0:51:18in this race. Hitting any lift to your advantage. To comment earlier
0:51:18 > 0:51:25
0:51:25 > 0:51:29than the other guy does help. away. And Red Bull have got to
0:51:29 > 0:51:36respond to this unless they are planning to go all the way to the
0:51:36 > 0:51:43end. Let us see where he comes out in traffic. He comes out in six.
0:51:43 > 0:51:51That was well timed. Alonso going well at the moment as well. A
0:51:51 > 0:51:53personal best lap on that last lap. Raikkonen has just gone five times
0:51:54 > 0:51:59quicker in that first sector than Sebastian Vettel. Responding of
0:51:59 > 0:52:07course to his team-mate coming in. Not a good first sector for
0:52:07 > 0:52:17Sebastian Vettel. Mark Webber made a pit stop a moment or two ago. He has
0:52:17 > 0:52:20
0:52:20 > 0:52:27gone onto the medium tyres. Grosjean is pushing hard. A crucial lap here
0:52:28 > 0:52:35for Grosjean. Raikkonen fast also in the middle sector. Keep an eye out
0:52:35 > 0:52:40for Raikkonen who might be heading in on this lap. That was one of the
0:52:40 > 0:52:47best pit stops I have seen this afternoon. Red Bull coming out into
0:52:47 > 0:52:57the pit lane. Survived in Vettel is in. And Raikkonen interestingly has
0:52:57 > 0:53:04stayed out. It looks to be another brilliant stop. From Red Bull.
0:53:04 > 0:53:10Grosjean has not finished on the lead lap since Bahrain. He is out in
0:53:10 > 0:53:15front of Grosjean. Red Bull had to respond. They did so and have got
0:53:16 > 0:53:23him back out in front of Grosjean. Of course Sebastian Vettel loves to
0:53:23 > 0:53:27be in this position, in control. Trying to score his 30th when this
0:53:28 > 0:53:37weekend and his first ever home win. But Raikkonen perhaps still want to
0:53:38 > 0:53:38
0:53:38 > 0:53:45watch. Sebastian Vettel does seem to have it just about under control.
0:53:45 > 0:53:53all depends on the lap time that Grosjean has been able to unleash.
0:53:53 > 0:53:59Sebastian Vettel has been told... Let us just listen. They are worried
0:53:59 > 0:54:08about Raikkonen. This could be the crucial moment of the race. Grosjean
0:54:08 > 0:54:15chases. But Raikkonen also doing his utmost. We expect to see the Lotus
0:54:15 > 0:54:24into the pits this time around. No, Raikkonen stays out. Raikkonen has
0:54:24 > 0:54:32stayed out. Does that mean he is trying to go to the end? I think so.
0:54:32 > 0:54:42That is what I would be trying to do. Lotus pulled Grosjean into the
0:54:42 > 0:54:42
0:54:42 > 0:54:48pits. Probably Red Bull are going to have to stop again. It is up to
0:54:48 > 0:54:55whether Raikkonen can keep up the pace and get to the flag. Tom, you
0:54:55 > 0:55:03are at the Lotus pit. Yes, looking pretty calm at the minute. I get
0:55:03 > 0:55:07about eight seconds of notice. That is how quickly it happens. Lewis
0:55:07 > 0:55:14Hamilton has just been told by the team, do not waste time holding
0:55:14 > 0:55:21these guys up. We need you to stay to strategy. Hamilton just test to
0:55:21 > 0:55:29run his own race. He will be sitting thinking, if I can keep Sebastian
0:55:29 > 0:55:34Vettel behind me, stop him running away with the championship. You do
0:55:34 > 0:55:39not want him running away too easily. Sebastian Vettel passes
0:55:39 > 0:55:44Hamilton. Side by side with the Mercedes but there is no way
0:55:44 > 0:55:52through. Just inches separate them coming out of the corner. Sebastian
0:55:52 > 0:55:57Vettel left the door wide open. He is certainly far enough ahead to
0:55:57 > 0:56:03start turning in. He just gave enough space to Lewis Hamilton.
0:56:03 > 0:56:07Sebastian Vettel getting through, Grosjean has got to do likewise.
0:56:07 > 0:56:13Still some pit stops to be expected from those who have not used the
0:56:13 > 0:56:23soft tyres. Alonso, but, they have got to make another pit stop.
0:56:23 > 0:56:26
0:56:26 > 0:56:32have to do that to comply with the regulations. I am sure Raikkonen can
0:56:32 > 0:56:40take it to the end if anybody can. That would be a brilliant strategic
0:56:40 > 0:56:47call if he is able to manage it on those tyres. He is still doing some
0:56:47 > 0:56:52good lap times. Raikkonen fast in that middle sector. Heading up
0:56:52 > 0:56:58towards the chicane. He has completed that move. Just so much
0:56:58 > 0:57:08more grip available on the brakes. Hamilton is coming in. Time to
0:57:08 > 0:57:09
0:57:09 > 0:57:19change those tyres now. They have done some 22 laps. Hopefully he
0:57:19 > 0:57:31
0:57:31 > 0:57:35should still be in the top ten. race pace has just slipped away.
0:57:35 > 0:57:43Hulkenberg moving now into 10th position. Jensen Button now into the
0:57:43 > 0:57:48pits. They are going to go for a 12 lap stint on the soft tyres. So when
0:57:48 > 0:57:53Jensen Button comes back out this is an opportunity for him to still
0:57:53 > 0:58:02score some useful points. He is going to come out just ahead of his
0:58:02 > 0:58:07team-mate. He is in the pit lane at the moment. Sebastian Vettel
0:58:07 > 0:58:17continues now in third place. Fernando Alonso has to make a pit
0:58:17 > 0:58:20
0:58:20 > 0:58:27stop. He will have a time last of around 18 seconds. Jensen Button has
0:58:27 > 0:58:32come back out. And Raikkonen has come in. He is not going to make it
0:58:32 > 0:58:40to the end. So this is a race between Sebastian Vettel and Romain
0:58:40 > 0:58:50Grosjean, surely. He has gone on the soft tyres. This is really
0:58:50 > 0:58:51
0:58:51 > 0:58:56interesting. This is not what we expect it. Raikkonen comes back out
0:58:56 > 0:59:00in third. Alonso in force but goes way too deep. Interesting that
0:59:00 > 0:59:05Raikkonen felt he was not going to be able to make the last ten laps on
0:59:06 > 0:59:12those tyres. Hamilton down the inside of Paul di Resta. He just
0:59:12 > 0:59:18squeezes past. Maldonado will stay in front of them. Alonso had to use
0:59:18 > 0:59:28those soft tyres. The interesting one is Raikkonen who has used them
0:59:28 > 0:59:28
0:59:29 > 0:59:38already. Jensen Button, fastest man on the track. I think that will be
0:59:39 > 0:59:39
0:59:39 > 0:59:47short lived by the time Raikkonen gets himself up to speed. So now we
0:59:47 > 0:59:53have Sebastian Vettel leading this race. Grosjean just behind him. Then
0:59:53 > 0:59:59Raikkonen just 2.6 seconds behind his team-mate. He is on the soft
0:59:59 > 1:00:09tyres. He is not far behind. There is a real chance for Kimi Raikkonen
1:00:09 > 1:00:12
1:00:12 > 1:00:15now. These were faster per lap than the medium compound tyre. Hamilton
1:00:15 > 1:00:20makes another move. Getting Maldonado this time. He's done it.
1:00:20 > 1:00:24Maldonado just couldn't fight back. We are expecting Maldonado in. There
1:00:24 > 1:00:28we are. Straight into the pit lane now. You have to imagine that Lotus
1:00:28 > 1:00:33will be asking Grosjean to get out of the way, as we have Perez on
1:00:33 > 1:00:39Button. Now Button on Perez. Yeah, and he's got the superior grip. He
1:00:39 > 1:00:44just drives past him. They're not fighting for the win,
1:00:44 > 1:00:50but interteam battle is always nice. Grosjean, when Raikkonen gets onto
1:00:50 > 1:00:56the back of him, which he will given he's on a different tyre. A quick
1:00:56 > 1:01:03note that Raikkonen's on a used set of soft tyres, as opposed to Alonso
1:01:03 > 1:01:06who had a new set to use. Let's not forget Alonso in all of this.
1:01:06 > 1:01:11They're not able to make their tyres last as long. Raikkonen doesn't have
1:01:12 > 1:01:17the peak of performance. But the fact they've been through a heat
1:01:17 > 1:01:23cycle will mean that they've slight liqueured the rubber. Reich --
1:01:23 > 1:01:28slightly Cured the rubber. He will take six tenths at least out of
1:01:28 > 1:01:33Grosjean on this lap. Not seeing the real jump in performance on the soft
1:01:33 > 1:01:39tyre with Raikkonen. We are with the used soft tyre is not that much
1:01:39 > 1:01:43quicker than the medium tyre of his team-mate just ahead. That surprises
1:01:43 > 1:01:47me. Maybe that's just the way the track has changed through the course
1:01:47 > 1:01:53of this race. Vettel leads. Grosjean, there's Raikkonen in third
1:01:53 > 1:01:58place. It's Alonso behind them who has just set fastest lap. He's 3. 7
1:01:58 > 1:02:04seconds behind. We just see Maldonado. Let's watch his pitstop.
1:02:04 > 1:02:09Was this trouble-free? No, it wasn't. That's the same corner they
1:02:09 > 1:02:15had the problem with last time as well. Oh, no. This opportunity for
1:02:15 > 1:02:19Williams to perhaps score points in their 600th Grand Prix has just
1:02:19 > 1:02:24evaporated in front of our eyes. I can't see them coming back from
1:02:24 > 1:02:30that. Re Replay with Nico Hulkenberg. Did he have an
1:02:30 > 1:02:35opportunity to overtake? Yes, he D His team-mate, Gutierrez. He's not
1:02:35 > 1:02:39up in the points yet, after this stop onto the soft tyre. This is on
1:02:39 > 1:02:46board Nico Rosberg, also on the soft tyre now, remember. That was him
1:02:46 > 1:02:49getting past Adrian Sutil into 12th place. Kimi is within DRS range.
1:02:49 > 1:02:57From Lotus's team point of view, with Kimi third in the championship,
1:02:57 > 1:03:03let's hear. Behind is on the option tyre, do not hold him up. He's up
1:03:03 > 1:03:06the inside into the chicane. Kimi Raikkonen goes past his team-mate.
1:03:06 > 1:03:10Has he got anything to throw at Sebastien Vettel or is that simply
1:03:10 > 1:03:15trying to get the best they can in terms of points? It's still a
1:03:15 > 1:03:20brilliant day for Lotus. It's a double podium finish. Alonso is
1:03:21 > 1:03:25still narrowing the gap, down to 1. 4 seconds now. That is Romain
1:03:25 > 1:03:30Grosjean's ennear -- engineer there. He's going to be warning Grosjean
1:03:30 > 1:03:34that Alonso is getting closer. a good recovery from Alonso. Looked
1:03:34 > 1:03:39to be getting into the race with a quiet start to the afternoon, taking
1:03:39 > 1:03:42that brave decision. He had a set of new soft tyres available, having
1:03:43 > 1:03:50decided to start on the different tyre in the last part of qualifying.
1:03:50 > 1:03:53It's working well for Ferrari this afternoon. Lewis Hamilton on Sergio
1:03:54 > 1:03:57Perez here. We heard that Webber could be on target to get past
1:03:57 > 1:04:01Perez. Hamilton going that much faster. He's done it earlier than
1:04:01 > 1:04:05that. Hamilton will score points here today. Is he going to catch
1:04:05 > 1:04:09Button, that's the next question? Button is on for matching his best
1:04:09 > 1:04:13result of the season here today. He's currently in fifth position.
1:04:14 > 1:04:20Account Mclaren hang on in there for the -- can the Mclaren hang on in
1:04:20 > 1:04:25there for the last part of this race? There's Alonso getting close
1:04:25 > 1:04:33to the back. Raikkonen is still catching Vettel slightly. But he is
1:04:33 > 1:04:37running out of laps. I wonder if he can do anything. Fernando Alonso, so
1:04:37 > 1:04:45many podium finishes. Looking at Ferrari's strategy, it doesn't seem
1:04:45 > 1:04:51to have worked out for them. This was Ricciardo. The battle for 11th.
1:04:51 > 1:04:54The Sauber went through. Rosberg is in the final
1:04:54 > 1:05:00point-scoring position at the moment in tenth. Di Resta in the points
1:05:00 > 1:05:06again. He's in ninth position. On that last lap Raikkonen definitely
1:05:06 > 1:05:12quicker. Took half a second out of the lead of Vettel, down to 2. 1
1:05:12 > 1:05:15seconds. I think he's going to run out of laps though. Kimi Raikkonen,
1:05:15 > 1:05:19there's Grosjean, Fernando Alonso right behind him, who wants that
1:05:19 > 1:05:25podium finish. Still trying to keep the pressure on Vettel in the
1:05:25 > 1:05:29championship. Alonso is currently second. Raikkonen has taken another
1:05:29 > 1:05:34three tenths out of Vettel in that sector. Maybe there is enough time.
1:05:34 > 1:05:36The soft tyres, interesting how it seems to be holding up reasonably
1:05:36 > 1:05:39well for Kimi Raikkonen here, despite not being a new tyre. If
1:05:39 > 1:05:43they were to finish where they are now, Vettel would still lead the
1:05:43 > 1:05:48championship. Alonso would still be in second. The gap would have opened
1:05:48 > 1:05:52up first to second. Raikkonen still in third. Hamilton would be fourth
1:05:52 > 1:05:56on 97 points. It doesn't really change the order very much. That is
1:05:56 > 1:06:01the order, that was the order coming in, it just changes their tallies
1:06:01 > 1:06:11and changes the gapds between the different drivers. -- gaps between
1:06:11 > 1:06:11
1:06:11 > 1:06:17Webber is in eighth place. He's five seconds behind Sergio Perez. Di
1:06:17 > 1:06:23Resta is on for points, so is Rosberg. Rosberg only 2. 4 seconds
1:06:23 > 1:06:31behind roast Di Resta. Just outside the -- Paul di Resta. Just outside
1:06:31 > 1:06:35the points at the moment. I've got to get these guys out of the way.
1:06:35 > 1:06:41Button is struggling get through the traffic. He knows he only has a
1:06:41 > 1:06:45five-second lead to Hamilton. Who is run running 1. 5 seconds a lap
1:06:45 > 1:06:49faster. Should be OK though Jenson, hold that position. That's not a bad
1:06:49 > 1:06:54result for Mclaren. They've been looking quite quick relative to
1:06:54 > 1:06:57recent performances. They were within half a second of the fastest
1:06:57 > 1:07:00qualifier in Q2 which is a major improvement. Both cars are in the
1:07:00 > 1:07:04points at the moment. Button is fifth and Perez seventh. That would
1:07:04 > 1:07:08be a real boost for the Mclaren team if they come home with those
1:07:08 > 1:07:14positions. Webber will have ideas on changing that. The gap between
1:07:14 > 1:07:19Raikkonen and Vettel, he's almost within the DRS range. 1. 3 seconds,
1:07:19 > 1:07:26Vettel just keeping him off the DRS zone at the moment. Doesn't
1:07:26 > 1:07:32lycopersicum there's going to be enough time un unless -- doesn't
1:07:32 > 1:07:37look like there's going to be enough time. On home turf, can he take
1:07:37 > 1:07:41victory here at the Nurburgring? Further extended his championship
1:07:41 > 1:07:47lead. All he's thinking about is winning in Germany right now. Still,
1:07:47 > 1:07:52he's just keeping enough of a gap back to Raikkonen, 1. 2 seconds.
1:07:52 > 1:07:57Round this time to complete lap 58. Two laps to go then. Kimi Raikkonen
1:07:57 > 1:08:03is not going to give up on this. But he's not quite close enough to get
1:08:03 > 1:08:11into the DRS zone. Alonso, I think, was, yes, he is in the zone. He will
1:08:11 > 1:08:17try to get past Romain Grosjean. Kimi Raikkonen will be in the DRS
1:08:17 > 1:08:27zone in the last lap. . But will he actually be able to do anything with
1:08:27 > 1:08:28
1:08:28 > 1:08:33it. There's a lapped car next up because fifth is Jenson Button only
1:08:33 > 1:08:361. 9 seconds ahead of Hamilton. Hamilton going two seconds of that
1:08:36 > 1:08:42faster than Jenson Button. I don't think there's a chance that Button
1:08:42 > 1:08:49will hold onto fifth. He could finish in sixth. Grosjean, Raikkonen
1:08:49 > 1:08:53rather has taken another couple of tenths off Vettel. He will be in the
1:08:53 > 1:08:57DRS zone. He's a second now behind the Red Red Bull. A race this is,
1:08:57 > 1:09:01two of the greats of Formula One pushing to the salute limit in the
1:09:01 > 1:09:05closing stages of the German Grand Prix. Still very little to choose
1:09:05 > 1:09:12between them. Vettel desperately trying to stay over a second ahead
1:09:12 > 1:09:18at the check points. 1. 046, 1. 025, as they go past the check points. It
1:09:18 > 1:09:24needs to be under a second. Lewis, two laps remaining, Jenson has
1:09:24 > 1:09:29fallen off this tyre. Hamilton is going to have him this lap. The gap
1:09:29 > 1:09:33is down to under two seconds. Button will be vulnerable for Hamilton.
1:09:34 > 1:09:37Onto the final lap. Sebastien Vettel, he's still got just over a
1:09:37 > 1:09:41second's advantage over Kimi Raikkonen in second place. Romain
1:09:41 > 1:09:45Grosjean still under attack from Fernando Alonso. Keep on eye in the
1:09:45 > 1:09:50background. A slide there from Raikkonen. Last lap, last lap.
1:09:50 > 1:09:54Attack, come on. Come on says Rocky. Raikkonen is not giving up on
1:09:54 > 1:09:58chasing him down here. The gap, as they cross the line on our timing
1:09:59 > 1:10:04screen, was 1. 0. But it was 1. 0 something. Here is Hamilton on
1:10:04 > 1:10:09Button. He's down the outside into turn one. The battle of the Brits.
1:10:09 > 1:10:14Cut back. No, he can't quite do it there. He might go round the
1:10:14 > 1:10:18outside. Here comes Hamilton! Round the outside of Jenson Button. That's
1:10:18 > 1:10:21moved him into fifth. He's leaving space for Jenson. That's a gentleman
1:10:21 > 1:10:25racer for you. That's the second time today we've seen him give
1:10:25 > 1:10:29space. The gap is in DRS range. You're right David, you said it
1:10:29 > 1:10:34would be on the last lap. Surely Vettel has got enough here. Kimi
1:10:34 > 1:10:38Raikkonen has got the gap down to under one second as they come
1:10:38 > 1:10:45through turn 11 for the final time here. Down the back straight the DRS
1:10:45 > 1:10:48flap is open. But there is just too much distance to be made up, surely.
1:10:48 > 1:10:53Sebastien Vettel has driven a brilliant race here. Kimi Raikkonen
1:10:53 > 1:10:58charging in the last few moments. Can he do anything? Up to the last
1:10:58 > 1:11:01corner. I don't think it's likely. Vet set vet through the final turn
1:11:01 > 1:11:06-- Sebastien Vettel through the final turn. Sebastien Vettel wins in
1:11:06 > 1:11:10Germany! The first time he's won his home Grand Prix. He wins it for Red
1:11:10 > 1:11:16Bull. Raikkonen a brilliant second. Grosjean just holds onto third.
1:11:16 > 1:11:20Alonso dropped back on the last lap. Maybe he had a lunge of getting past
1:11:20 > 1:11:26the Frenchman on the last lap. Alonso in fourth. We know Hamilton
1:11:26 > 1:11:29has taken fifth position on this last lap from Jenson Button. But
1:11:29 > 1:11:34we're just waiting to see how the other positions end up. Hamilton
1:11:34 > 1:11:39just crossing the line in fifth. Button is sixth. Webber... In front
1:11:39 > 1:11:45of Perez. Webber's got him. Webber is past Perez and Webber is going to
1:11:45 > 1:11:51take seventh. Oh, and Alonso has stopped often this lap. That could
1:11:51 > 1:11:56be a fuelling issue. He's getting out of the car. So whatever it is,
1:11:56 > 1:12:00he's going to have to walk back up to the pits. The top ten, Rosberg in
1:12:00 > 1:12:05ninth. Hulkenberg for the second race in succession, scores the final
1:12:05 > 1:12:12point in tenth. Sebastien Vettel wins in Germany. His 30th career
1:12:12 > 1:12:19victory. You've won your home race! You've won the German Grand Prix.
1:12:19 > 1:12:25Well done, Sebastien. Great drive! Would-hoo. Yes, yes, yes yeah baby!
1:12:25 > 1:12:32Thank you boys. That was a tough one. Oh, man. They gave me a run for
1:12:32 > 1:12:37the money. Would-hoo. Yes, yes, yes and yes again. Sebastien Vettel
1:12:37 > 1:12:42comes back with victory here. What a reply and of course it further
1:12:42 > 1:12:52extends his championship lead. The results of the German Grand Prix
1:12:52 > 1:12:52
1:12:52 > 1:13:37Apology for the loss of subtitles for 55 seconds
1:13:37 > 1:13:46results of the German Grand Prix German driver, totably Michael
1:13:47 > 1:13:51Schumacher won in -- notably. Now the fans can celebrate.
1:13:51 > 1:13:57Kimi Raikkonen, as cool as ever coming within a second of the race
1:13:57 > 1:14:03victory here today. Romain Grosjean, a solid job there to score his
1:14:03 > 1:14:08second podium finish of the season. Now they can actually get to work
1:14:08 > 1:14:16with the champagne. Something I'm sure that Sebastien Vettel has
1:14:17 > 1:14:20droment of for a long time to be able to do -- dreamt of for a long
1:14:20 > 1:14:25time to be able to do this. Definitely one of the toughest races
1:14:25 > 1:14:29we've had for a long time, with no rest. Usually we are not on holiday,
1:14:29 > 1:14:33but today I couldn't afford to really look after the tyres. I tried
1:14:33 > 1:14:40to make sure that I don't damage them too much so that we have ape
1:14:40 > 1:14:44stint long enough. The safety car didn't help us. But just very happy
1:14:44 > 1:14:48that it worked out in the end and for the whole team and for myself it
1:14:48 > 1:14:53was very special. They really tried very hard to give me the chance to
1:14:53 > 1:14:57win here and we had it today. Fortunately I could use it. Explain
1:14:57 > 1:15:03how much it means to you to win your home Grand Prix. When the flag came
1:15:03 > 1:15:06out and the race was over, I enjoyed the in-lap a lot. I saw a lot of
1:15:06 > 1:15:12people in the grand stands cheering and waving the flag. So that was
1:15:12 > 1:15:16very special. This -- these kind of pictures will remain in my head for
1:15:16 > 1:15:20hopefully a long time. Congratulations, the perfect day for
1:15:20 > 1:15:25Sebastian today. Didn't have it all his own way, but the start was
1:15:25 > 1:15:29amazing. It was a great start to the Grand Prix. For Sebastian to win at
1:15:29 > 1:15:34home is the dream of any driver. We had our moments. We had some issues
1:15:34 > 1:15:38during the race. But ultimately he managed to come through. It seems to
1:15:38 > 1:15:42me that the actual getaway of the Mercedes was good, but your boys
1:15:42 > 1:15:48swamped him on the run down to the first corner. What changed for this
1:15:48 > 1:15:52race? Tiply Mark hasn't got off the -- typically Mark hasn't got off the
1:15:52 > 1:15:57line well. The way that they dispatched the cars, the way they
1:15:57 > 1:16:00used the KERS down to the first turn was absolutely right. Mark you'll
1:16:00 > 1:16:07see on the left, tetch book between see on the left, tetch book between
1:16:07 > 1:16:14see on the left, tetch book between the two of them. It was textbook add
1:16:14 > 1:16:22that stage of the race. Just looking from this angle. I thought this was
1:16:22 > 1:16:29really nice. Like a member image. But I bet you did not enjoy the pit
1:16:29 > 1:16:33stops. We want to talk to Mark Webber now. A great recovery drive
1:16:33 > 1:16:38from you but difficult circumstances. How much did you know
1:16:38 > 1:16:43about what had happened in the pit lane? I knew that I lost the tyre
1:16:43 > 1:16:51and I was told that somebody got hit with the wheel which is bad. I think
1:16:51 > 1:16:57he is OK which is the first thing. And after that you wanted to be a
1:16:57 > 1:17:04nightmare and to wake up tomorrow and have another go. It was a good
1:17:04 > 1:17:14start. But we lost all of that and that was it. It was a missed
1:17:14 > 1:17:20opportunity today? We did lose points, no question about it.
1:17:20 > 1:17:25Paul Allen was the cameraman who did get hit. He was taken to the medical
1:17:26 > 1:17:32centre and then helicoptered to hospital. But he is all right. It
1:17:32 > 1:17:37was unfortunate. It is shocking to see something like that and he was
1:17:37 > 1:17:43knocked over with such force. It just does not go on properly and
1:17:43 > 1:17:50then the car is released. Unfortunately the cameraman was
1:17:50 > 1:17:59completely unaware. Thankfully he was OK. Just talk us through the
1:17:59 > 1:18:05procedure. Mark is looking at the lights to tell him to go. That is
1:18:05 > 1:18:10activated manually. He is reacting purely to the lights so we need to
1:18:10 > 1:18:16understand what happened and he was able to pull away. Nothing to do
1:18:16 > 1:18:23with Mark Webber. That is an issue that we need to understand. It is a
1:18:23 > 1:18:31reminder that it is still dangerous working in the pit lane.
1:18:31 > 1:18:38Thank you very much. Well Kimi Raikkonen, some tough laps
1:18:38 > 1:18:45out there. We heard you on team radio saying that you thought you
1:18:45 > 1:18:52could stay out. So what happened? could not hear them on the radio.
1:18:52 > 1:18:59But they could hear me. So that made it difficult to decide what to do.
1:18:59 > 1:19:06So the safest thing was to come in. We got close but we did not get the
1:19:06 > 1:19:09win. It is not possible to say that the tyres would have been OK.
1:19:09 > 1:19:19last pit stop for Kimi Raikkonen, what is the thought process behind
1:19:19 > 1:19:22
1:19:22 > 1:19:26that? Well we were watching carefully, his pace. We had some
1:19:26 > 1:19:33indications about the wearer on the tyres. And we had in the back of our
1:19:33 > 1:19:41minds some memories of Shanghai. We tried to get to the end but there
1:19:41 > 1:19:46was a risk of losing the tyres. And at the late stage of the race we
1:19:46 > 1:19:51tried to put on the options and catch up with Sebastien.
1:19:51 > 1:19:59difficult was it, the radiocommunication? Well it made for
1:19:59 > 1:20:05more stress. But it was the right call.
1:20:05 > 1:20:15Let's hear from Romain Grosjean. wear impressive on the soft tyres in
1:20:15 > 1:20:15
1:20:15 > 1:20:20the beginning and they did last a long time. It felt good. The
1:20:20 > 1:20:28strategy in qualifying might have been a little bit different if we
1:20:28 > 1:20:33had known that. But it was good to try it. We tried to jump Sebastian
1:20:34 > 1:20:37Vettel on the pit stop. If I had been in front of him after the last
1:20:37 > 1:20:42pit stop I think it would have been a different story.
1:20:42 > 1:20:52Fernando, a quiet start to your afternoon but a good recovery
1:20:52 > 1:20:56
1:20:56 > 1:21:01towards the end. I think the strategy worked fine. We finished
1:21:01 > 1:21:08just behind Sebastian Vettel thought it was a good race pace that not
1:21:08 > 1:21:12good enough to overtake them. The soft tyres at the beginning, that
1:21:12 > 1:21:20was a surprise for us. We thought they would be slow and would beat
1:21:20 > 1:21:24everybody. So it was a surprise for us. Perhaps we did not maximise the
1:21:25 > 1:21:29advantage. So things not going according to plan today for
1:21:29 > 1:21:35Ferrari. The teams are having to think on their feet. They were
1:21:35 > 1:21:40operating within new parameters. And then over the course of three days
1:21:40 > 1:21:47the rubber has gone down and the temperature is over 40 degrees. So
1:21:47 > 1:21:50what they predict did just did not happen but another solid result.
1:21:50 > 1:21:55They had some good battles especially this one with Lewis.
1:21:55 > 1:22:03lot of respect between these former team-mates. This is down into turn
1:22:03 > 1:22:11one. He tries to take it around the outside. But not this time. Taking
1:22:11 > 1:22:18it absolutely to the limit. And not a good day for Felipe Massa. He was
1:22:18 > 1:22:24stuck in fiscal year when he braked because of reliability issues and it
1:22:24 > 1:22:32spun off the circuit. Jensen Button, is the traffic what caused due your
1:22:32 > 1:22:36difficulties? Yes, that fighting cost me the fifth place. I have
1:22:36 > 1:22:43spoken to them both and they do not think they did anything wrong. When
1:22:43 > 1:22:49you are fighting for position you expect them to move over. Still a
1:22:49 > 1:22:55better result than we have seen of late from McLaren. Any positives to
1:22:56 > 1:23:01take away? Definitely. It is nice to be racing up towards the front. The
1:23:01 > 1:23:08pace was not too bad compared to the cars in front either. I think we
1:23:08 > 1:23:15should be happy with today and these are points that we really need. We
1:23:15 > 1:23:21both lost out on the last lap which is a pain. But I think it was a good
1:23:21 > 1:23:28weekend as a whole. Hopefully we can improve. So McLaren in the points
1:23:28 > 1:23:33this week. But taking another look at that traffic he was talking
1:23:33 > 1:23:40about. This is down into turn one. Clearly battling for position.
1:23:40 > 1:23:47Jensen Button trying to maintain that fit place. The minute you have
1:23:47 > 1:23:54to compromise your line, you start picking up dirt. You can see that
1:23:54 > 1:24:01blue Marshall board. So he is losing time and he felt it cost him a
1:24:01 > 1:24:05position. And you would have been frustrated in his position with Mac
1:24:05 > 1:24:13when I was being lapped I always got well out of the way. I know how hard
1:24:13 > 1:24:20it is when you find yourself racing at the front. Both of those guys are
1:24:20 > 1:24:25paid to race as fast as they can. So they will be frustrated by a car
1:24:25 > 1:24:32that holds them up. But McLaren do seem to have made progress this
1:24:32 > 1:24:38weekend. In Q2 they will within half a second off the pace. They do seem
1:24:38 > 1:24:42to have picked up with the different tyre specifications. They came off
1:24:42 > 1:24:46the back of a couple of pointless races which is not what you expect
1:24:46 > 1:24:51from McLaren. Well Lewis, the car was slipping and
1:24:51 > 1:24:58sliding around but seemed to come alive at the end. Not really. It
1:24:58 > 1:25:04just got lighter and lighter. I was pushing as hard as I could just to
1:25:04 > 1:25:09get some points. I needed both points. Let's talk about tyres. You
1:25:09 > 1:25:12were saying on team radio it seemed like some of the guys were on
1:25:12 > 1:25:19different tyres to you. How difficult where they out there
1:25:19 > 1:25:25today? It was like I was in another world compared to the others. They
1:25:25 > 1:25:35just had so much grip. And they were just pulling away at a ridiculous
1:25:35 > 1:25:36
1:25:36 > 1:25:43pace. And I was struggling to get past the salver. That was crazy that
1:25:43 > 1:25:50I could struggle that much. So when I will joint by Paul Hembery from
1:25:50 > 1:25:54Pirelli. How do you react to those comments? I think you more or less
1:25:54 > 1:25:59explained it in Seoul. Everyone else was working with the same tyres and
1:25:59 > 1:26:05it is their challenge to find out how they work. This year they gained
1:26:05 > 1:26:11a lot of pace in qualifying. They need to match that now with the race
1:26:11 > 1:26:18pace. You must be relieved to get back to normal operations? It has
1:26:18 > 1:26:22been a busy week, that is for sure. We need to understand what happened
1:26:22 > 1:26:32that Silverstone. A lot of that is still going on. But it was a good
1:26:32 > 1:26:33
1:26:33 > 1:26:37race here and we are looking forward now to the young drivers test.
1:26:37 > 1:26:42what can we expect for the rest of the season? Things are going to
1:26:42 > 1:26:47change by the time we get to Hungary. I do not think too many
1:26:47 > 1:26:51things will change. We will still have a mixture of strategies.
1:26:51 > 1:26:58Hopefully races like today when people to approach it in a different
1:26:58 > 1:27:07way. Perhaps the safety car ruined the end of the race a little bit
1:27:07 > 1:27:17today. A look at the results from today now. The perfect date for
1:27:17 > 1:27:45
1:27:45 > 1:27:51Sebastian Vettel taking the full 25 were your headlines for today?
1:27:52 > 1:27:58Ferrari never really got the tyres to work for them. They should have
1:27:59 > 1:28:05got to lap 25 before they get it. The safety car helped them into
1:28:05 > 1:28:13fourth place but it took the safety car to do it. What could Kimi
1:28:13 > 1:28:18Raikkonen have done? Well eight lap passed and they did not make the
1:28:18 > 1:28:27decision. They needed to make the decision earlier. We are back in
1:28:27 > 1:28:34three weeks' time in Hungary. All that action on BBC One. Of course on
