0:00:59 > 0:01:09Nurburgring in Germany. It has been less than a week since we witnessed

0:01:09 > 0:01:26

0:01:26 > 0:01:34that drama from Silverstone. There the rear tyres.

0:01:34 > 0:01:41And it is Lewis Hamilton! The crowd watching cannot believe it. They

0:01:41 > 0:01:47sent him on his way once again. Felipe Massa has gone off! Right in

0:01:47 > 0:01:54front of Raikkonen. This is shocking. People have been having

0:01:54 > 0:02:04punctures. We do not expect to see this in grand prix racing. Hamilton

0:02:04 > 0:02:09goes for it. They will be side. Fantastic from Lewis Hamilton.

0:02:09 > 0:02:17is a problem. He is in trouble. And Rosberg takes the lead at the

0:02:17 > 0:02:25British Grand Prix! Look at Hamilton. He is going to take

0:02:25 > 0:02:33advantage at the same time! The tyre has gone. They are side by side

0:02:33 > 0:02:39through the corner. Wonderful. Mark Webber has done it. Hamilton down

0:02:39 > 0:02:46the inside of Adrian Sutil. Hamilton takes it. Fernando Alonso sweeps

0:02:46 > 0:02:53into third place. Hamilton takes fourth place. Coming from an

0:02:53 > 0:03:03exploded tyre. This is tremendous from Lewis Hamilton. Nico Rosberg

0:03:03 > 0:03:07

0:03:07 > 0:03:13has done it. Rosberg wins the British Grand Prix. Well done, mate.

0:03:13 > 0:03:18So is strong when from Nico Rosberg, his second of the season. There were

0:03:18 > 0:03:23top performances through the field but got overshadowed by that time a

0:03:23 > 0:03:29story. Lewis Hamilton was leading when he had that tyre failure. He

0:03:29 > 0:03:35made a great recovery. Mark Webber got pushed off. He was able to come

0:03:35 > 0:03:39through. Paul di Resta got up into the points. So a lot of great

0:03:39 > 0:03:44stories from the British Grand Prix which was overshadowed by those

0:03:44 > 0:03:49difficulties with the tyres. But we do not expect that this weekend.

0:03:49 > 0:03:54of course Sebastian Vettel, that failure, that has closed up the

0:03:54 > 0:04:02championship at the top. There is not one driver or team combination

0:04:02 > 0:04:07that is running away with it. So I think we're looking at a battle

0:04:07 > 0:04:13between red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari. Let us take a look at how

0:04:13 > 0:04:20they stand going into the ninth round. Sebastian Vettel's lead

0:04:20 > 0:04:27reduced by just 21 over Fernando Alonso. And just a couple separating

0:04:27 > 0:04:31Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber in the red Bull. Mercedes made the news

0:04:31 > 0:04:40in the battle for the constructors title. Overtaking Ferrari for second

0:04:40 > 0:04:44place. Red Bull still at the top of the table. So let us take the walk

0:04:44 > 0:04:50up the pit lane. Does that now put Mercedes in contention for the

0:04:50 > 0:04:58title? Unquestionably. The drivers have a chance. For the constructors

0:04:58 > 0:05:03it may be a long order. Sebastian Vettel had the gearbox issues. But

0:05:04 > 0:05:11if the driver is can keep on top of the tyres then they can claw that

0:05:11 > 0:05:16back. But for red Bull, with the constructors, they are running away

0:05:16 > 0:05:20with it. At the start of the season it was all low-key with Mercedes.

0:05:20 > 0:05:27And now the chance of getting the drivers title. They had the fastest

0:05:27 > 0:05:33qualifying car. Any team would prefer to have a fast car. And then

0:05:33 > 0:05:37work on controlling one element. You do not want a slow car and then

0:05:37 > 0:05:47trying to make it fast. When we arrived here everyone was talking

0:05:47 > 0:05:48

0:05:48 > 0:05:57about the tyres. Here is the story. We need to do something. Some day

0:05:57 > 0:06:05there could be a really bad accident. It happened to me twice.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09If they do not make the tyres savour, it is just unacceptable.

0:06:09 > 0:06:16is only when someone gets hurt that someone will do something about it.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20How close were we to getting the black flag with Mac I think very

0:06:20 > 0:06:25close. It was a difficult decision. Difficult for everyone involved to

0:06:25 > 0:06:33know what to do. We spent a lot of time analysing the tyres from

0:06:34 > 0:06:40Silverstone. We allowed the teams to invert the rear tyres. When you

0:06:40 > 0:06:48switch them around, Bayard directional. And those metallic band

0:06:48 > 0:06:55inside them puts the stress on one point. We put another type of belt

0:06:55 > 0:07:01in. And then we go back to the 2012 structure which gives you a bigger

0:07:01 > 0:07:05margin. The FIA has imposed a ban on tyres swapping for the German Grand

0:07:05 > 0:07:10Prix so the front and the rear tyres must be used on the site of the car

0:07:10 > 0:07:14for which they were originally designed. Some teams had been

0:07:14 > 0:07:20swapping them to gain a performance advantage. Teams have been messing

0:07:20 > 0:07:27around with camber and pressure for years so it is nothing new. But

0:07:27 > 0:07:31these tyres, they are too on edge. It is nothing to do with

0:07:31 > 0:07:35competitiveness but all to do with the safety. Pirelli have a strong

0:07:35 > 0:07:40technical department and they need to understand the issues quickly.

0:07:40 > 0:07:45Teams will always push the boundaries. Some of the restrictions

0:07:45 > 0:07:54are limiting performance so it is important to be there and for the

0:07:54 > 0:08:01FAA to make sure everyone respects the limit. The car is where lapping

0:08:01 > 0:08:06quicker in previous years. That is all about the tyres being loaded.

0:08:06 > 0:08:13And that is a huge step forward. Do not underestimate the impact of

0:08:14 > 0:08:19those loadings. Unfortunately, we had underestimated it. It was

0:08:19 > 0:08:22controversial but the object of was to give them those loadings and

0:08:22 > 0:08:27conditions. The Grand Prix Drivers' Association issued a statement

0:08:27 > 0:08:34saying if there was a repeat of the tyre failure is then the drivers

0:08:34 > 0:08:40would be willing to boycott the German Grand Prix. The bottom line,

0:08:40 > 0:08:45you have new tyres ready for this event. And the circumstances that we

0:08:45 > 0:08:53raced onto in Silverstone, they were not what we can accept. And should

0:08:53 > 0:08:57they be repeated then we cannot race under those circumstances.

0:08:58 > 0:09:03Motorsport is dangerous and we are the first to recognise that. Our job

0:09:03 > 0:09:05is to make sure we do not have those issues. It is also the

0:09:06 > 0:09:11responsibility of the team. So barely any time between races to

0:09:11 > 0:09:16resolve these issues. Gary is at technical expert. Can you explain

0:09:16 > 0:09:22the differences between the tyres? The front tyre is the same as at

0:09:22 > 0:09:28Silverstone. The rear tyre, the material has changed. There was a

0:09:28 > 0:09:34wire carcass beneath the tread to try to keep that flatter to get more

0:09:34 > 0:09:38grip. They have now changed that to a different type of material. It is

0:09:38 > 0:09:42tougher but not so stiff. It will change the shape of the tyres a

0:09:42 > 0:09:45little bit. But it will be tougher. The teams have been operating

0:09:45 > 0:09:52outside the preferences given to them by Pirelli. Also with

0:09:52 > 0:09:57pressures. In my day we were tightly controlled by the tyre manufacturer.

0:09:57 > 0:10:02Have Pirelli been a bit lax or have the teams taken it into their own

0:10:02 > 0:10:09hands? The teams are going to push the limits obviously. Softer

0:10:09 > 0:10:16pressure will give better traction on those slow corners. More camber,

0:10:16 > 0:10:19again same reason. It gives you more bite. So the teams will push it but

0:10:19 > 0:10:25Pirelli have always given recommendations. It is up to the

0:10:25 > 0:10:28teams to apply that was step outside of it. I checked some tyre pressures

0:10:28 > 0:10:35in Silverstone, watching the mechanics check them. One front

0:10:35 > 0:10:43running team had different measurements in the front and the

0:10:43 > 0:10:51rear tyres. Pirelli are saying that you need a minimum. It is a major

0:10:51 > 0:10:56step but it will help. We mentioned running them on opposite sides but

0:10:56 > 0:11:02with that wire when they run on the opposite sides it is just like

0:11:02 > 0:11:07pushing on a piece of wire. It will just then. But if you push it it is

0:11:07 > 0:11:12quite strong. So running on the opposite side contributes to that

0:11:12 > 0:11:15problem as well. So this weekend they are not allowed to swap them.

0:11:15 > 0:11:22What were the other factors did you feel at Silverstone contributed to

0:11:22 > 0:11:27the situation? Well the curb has got a sharp edge at Silverstone.

0:11:27 > 0:11:32that plus the tyres running the wrong way, the pressure of being a

0:11:32 > 0:11:37bit low, it puts more load on the inside firewalls. And that is what

0:11:38 > 0:11:42failed. When we look at the pic true is that with all, the inside

0:11:43 > 0:11:47shoulder of Felipe Massa's car, Lewis Hamilton's car, both clear

0:11:47 > 0:11:53failure is there. And we can actually see that failure. Doing

0:11:53 > 0:11:58about 400 metres before the tyre actually failed. So the thing does

0:11:58 > 0:12:04not always blow up. Everyone is contributing towards trying to

0:12:04 > 0:12:09improve the problem. 19 of the left rear tyres did have cuts in them and

0:12:09 > 0:12:17that is quite an extraordinary amount. It is and at the end of the

0:12:17 > 0:12:23day, that could be two inches long, ten inches long. If you do get a cut

0:12:23 > 0:12:28it still means that the tyre is flexing a lot and with low pressure

0:12:28 > 0:12:32it flexes a lot more. If there is a cut that is where it is going to

0:12:32 > 0:12:37fail. Pirelli have made a more durable tyre. Everyone else has to

0:12:37 > 0:12:41make sure they abide by the recommendations that Pirelli have

0:12:41 > 0:12:48set down. The FIA are going to impose strict controls this

0:12:48 > 0:12:53weekend. Up until now Pirelli have given these recommendations to the

0:12:53 > 0:12:57teams but have no way of policing that. But now the FIA have stepped

0:12:57 > 0:13:01in saying that these are the minimum or maximum requirements. And they

0:13:02 > 0:13:07have got the right to walk into the garage and check the pressures. So

0:13:07 > 0:13:14it will be implemented throughout the grid. So David, moving forward

0:13:14 > 0:13:17to this weekend. Who stood out in the practice sessions? Well red Bull

0:13:17 > 0:13:24seemed to have been showing better pace in the practice session before

0:13:24 > 0:13:31qualifying. That gives us an indication that it is suiting them

0:13:31 > 0:13:35rather than others. Sebastian Vettel will be wanting to prove himself in

0:13:35 > 0:13:42front of the fans. Every race is important. He would love to get a

0:13:42 > 0:13:47home win. He is very popular in Germany and that would just put him

0:13:47 > 0:13:52into the Michael Schumacher league. And a lot of pressure on Mercedes? A

0:13:52 > 0:13:56lot of the board members historically come here. They have a

0:13:56 > 0:14:06lot of employees and they expect to see the results. And now they're

0:14:06 > 0:14:15

0:14:15 > 0:14:21used to winning. It is now time for The first segment of qualifying has

0:14:21 > 0:14:26begun. No one in any rush to get out on track. We have the soft Pirelli

0:14:26 > 0:14:32tyres being used and the medium compound tyre this weekend. Gary

0:14:32 > 0:14:38Anderson joined us. Looking at what is going to happen in qualifying

0:14:38 > 0:14:42today, some fast laps set by Sebastian Vettel. To use the red

0:14:42 > 0:14:47Bull taking the edge? And also what the teams are being told in terms of

0:14:47 > 0:14:52the tyres. The minimum stabilised running pressure is one of the

0:14:52 > 0:15:00things and that is quite a high pressure. The more the pressure, the

0:15:00 > 0:15:05more the tyre will slide around. And that will make some of them suffer.

0:15:05 > 0:15:10Making sure that they comply with that regulation. The first step is

0:15:10 > 0:15:20to get through Q1. What do you reckon you have got to do in terms

0:15:20 > 0:15:25

0:15:25 > 0:15:35of the times? Well I think 31.5. go out for that quickly. Paul di

0:15:35 > 0:15:42

0:15:42 > 0:15:49Resta, very familiar with the Number Theory. -- Nurburgring vment You can

0:15:49 > 0:15:58see the elevation change there. is one of the DRS Jones come race

0:15:58 > 0:16:04day tomorrow. They can use it in qualifying. Pastor Maldonado on

0:16:04 > 0:16:11track now. Big 600 written on the side of course to celebrate 600

0:16:11 > 0:16:15Grand Prix for Williams. We were talking earlier in free practice

0:16:15 > 0:16:20that it may be a lesson to companies out there, can you read the 600

0:16:20 > 0:16:23better than you can read any of the sponsors' logos. Maybe more

0:16:23 > 0:16:27companies, well of course, then we get a close-up of the car. There you

0:16:27 > 0:16:34go, from there, it stands out easily. It is distinctive. They are

0:16:34 > 0:16:41struggling this year. It may be their # 00th Grand Prix - he's on

0:16:41 > 0:16:46the -- 600th Grand Prix. He's on the soft tyre. Di Resta halls set the

0:16:46 > 0:16:52pace on the medium compound tyre. That car twitching, turning in. He

0:16:52 > 0:17:02was complaining on the radios this morning that it was virtually

0:17:02 > 0:17:03

0:17:03 > 0:17:07undrivable. 3 1. 8, Garry reckoned mid-31 is where you need to be.

0:17:07 > 0:17:14is a big drop into this corner. Not unusual to lock up the inside tyre

0:17:14 > 0:17:19because of the way the irkit -- circuit cambers away from you. Wider

0:17:19 > 0:17:22at the apex than he would have liked. Here. How will he compare

0:17:22 > 0:17:29with the target time set by Maldonado. Bottas has done virtually

0:17:29 > 0:17:32the same time. Sutcliffe is fourth. He's on the harder tyre. 32. 7 on

0:17:32 > 0:17:35that tyre. They will have to go to the soft. They're just getting a run

0:17:36 > 0:17:41in on the medium compound tyre. Williams one, two at the moment.

0:17:41 > 0:17:50Buff they are in danger -- but they are in danger of not making it to

0:17:50 > 0:17:53the second part of qualifying. There's no grip at all. Hamilton was

0:17:53 > 0:17:58talking about that this morning. This is Rosberg. He's on the medium

0:17:58 > 0:18:08compound tyre. Is the Mercedes quick enough to get through to the second

0:18:08 > 0:18:14

0:18:14 > 0:18:18part of qualifying using the harder change here into this very long

0:18:18 > 0:18:26hairpin. It's cambered in as well. You get a wonderful feel, not quite

0:18:27 > 0:18:33like a carousel but it is nice feeling into the hairpin and into

0:18:33 > 0:18:37what I consider to be the nice medium-speed chicane. Then it's

0:18:37 > 0:18:41really great through this right-hander. Can you run up onto

0:18:41 > 0:18:45the kerb and drop down the hill. the target time. No surprise there.

0:18:45 > 0:18:49It might be enough for Mercedes to get through on the harder tyre

0:18:49 > 0:18:58rather than having to use a set of the soft. Daniel Ricciardo has gone

0:18:58 > 0:19:08quickest. He has used the soft tyre. This is a pretty good lap for

0:19:08 > 0:19:10

0:19:10 > 0:19:14Rosberg on the harder tyre. He's second. 1. 31. 3. It may be Mercedes

0:19:14 > 0:19:24can depend on the harder tyre here. That was a lock up from Sutcliffe.

0:19:24 > 0:19:31

0:19:31 > 0:19:35He was talking about oversteer being wheel and probably lock the diff

0:19:36 > 0:19:42slightly. That will enable the car to be more stable. Lewis Hamilton

0:19:42 > 0:19:46out there now. We're looking at a replay of Rosberg. Hamilton set the

0:19:46 > 0:19:50first -- fastest first sector of anybody. He's doing exactly what

0:19:50 > 0:19:55Rosberg did, trying to do enough in the first part of the qualifying on

0:19:55 > 0:19:59the harder tyre to go through to the second part of qualifying. That

0:19:59 > 0:20:02saves tyres for later on. He's second. He's quicker than Rosberg.

0:20:03 > 0:20:12That's interesting, because this morning, Rosberg definitely hot edge

0:20:13 > 0:20:17

0:20:17 > 0:20:27between the two of them. -- had the Alonso goes fastest. It sounds as

0:20:27 > 0:20:32though he might do a couple more laps. That's what his engineer said.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36He's a tenth slower than this morning. Might have had a bit more

0:20:36 > 0:20:41fuel on board. Though the tyre is slower, of course, with the track

0:20:41 > 0:20:46being warmer. Lotus directly onto the soft tyre and a fastest first

0:20:46 > 0:20:49sector of anybody for Kimi Raikkonen. Not running the passive

0:20:49 > 0:20:53DRS system that they ran at Silverstone. They put it on

0:20:53 > 0:20:57Grosjean's car on Friday morning, then they went for the slim line

0:20:57 > 0:21:01bodywork at the back of the car. When you look at the back of the

0:21:01 > 0:21:08Lotus, there's a lot of space around the rear wing. They want as much

0:21:08 > 0:21:12airflow. This is a pretty good lap. It's a 27. 7 middle sector. -- 37. 7

0:21:12 > 0:21:18middle sector. That's not the fastest. Plenty of support for Kimi

0:21:18 > 0:21:22Raikkonen. He comes around to complete his first slap. He goes

0:21:22 > 0:21:26fastest for the moment. We are in the final five minutes of the first

0:21:26 > 0:21:31part of qualifying. You have to get into the top 16. Important laps

0:21:31 > 0:21:38coming up here. Just one ran for the likes of Massa and Button trying to

0:21:38 > 0:21:44save tyres. Kimi, 30. 7, so we think we're through. I would hope they

0:21:44 > 0:21:49were through with that kind of lap time. Felipe Massa on the soft tyre.

0:21:49 > 0:21:54Alonso is second quickest. It's about half a second slower than the

0:21:55 > 0:22:00fastest at the moment. He's got Bottas just ahead of him. I wonder

0:22:00 > 0:22:10if that will hinder him at all. Bottas is pushing fairly hard. Just

0:22:10 > 0:22:15

0:22:15 > 0:22:21saw the Williams briefly flashing should be safely within range of the

0:22:21 > 0:22:26next part of qualifying. Bottas has Grosjean in front of him. He was

0:22:26 > 0:22:33backing off to try and get some space. We saw him locking up into

0:22:33 > 0:22:39turn one. Gutierrez making a brake balance adjustment. Could be a

0:22:39 > 0:22:49chance for Gutierrez to get out of Q1 and into Q 2. He hasn't done that

0:22:49 > 0:22:52

0:22:52 > 0:23:02as many times as he would have liked going to be fair fairly marginal.

0:23:02 > 0:23:02

0:23:03 > 0:23:08Five times this year he's failed to get out of Q1. Force India's are out

0:23:08 > 0:23:13on track. They have gone for the option tyres. That first run on the

0:23:13 > 0:23:17primes was to get them up to speed. Seen both Vettel and Webber do their

0:23:17 > 0:23:21runs on the medium compound tyre just like Mercedes. The two fastest

0:23:21 > 0:23:25teams from this morning have gone for the same strategy of running the

0:23:25 > 0:23:30harder compound tyre. They've done enough to get through. Though

0:23:31 > 0:23:40Webber, 31. 4, he's only just done enough. I wonder if they'll have to

0:23:41 > 0:23:41

0:23:41 > 0:23:46send him back out. Di Resta, 31. 4 as well. Jenson Button does -- goes

0:23:46 > 0:23:566th fastest. His team-mate needs to do something. Sutil is in the drop

0:23:56 > 0:24:02

0:24:02 > 0:24:08Sutil crosses the line and he's ninth. That should be enough. He's

0:24:08 > 0:24:12safe. Rosberg won't be back out. He's done enough. Valtteri Bottas

0:24:12 > 0:24:16improving his lap time, but is it enough? He should move into the top

0:24:16 > 0:24:2116 briefly. But whether he can hang on in there when everyone else comes

0:24:21 > 0:24:28out to do a lap, we'll have to wait and see. Perez seems to be

0:24:28 > 0:24:33struggling here. He's 18th. That's not good enough. He has another lap.

0:24:33 > 0:24:40If he can get another lap out of these tyres. Bottas has squeezed

0:24:40 > 0:24:45into the top 16. Whether he can hold on. He's pushed his team-mate down,

0:24:45 > 0:24:54they're evenly matched those two. This is Sergio Perez. How's this

0:24:54 > 0:24:58looking? Short shifted to exit four. Great balance adjust. Again a

0:24:58 > 0:25:04cambered corner into another downhill cambered corner. You can

0:25:04 > 0:25:07hear the very late shift. That's the way they energise the exhausts and

0:25:07 > 0:25:16blow the diffuser not as effective as in previous years, of course, but

0:25:16 > 0:25:26it's still used. They rev these engines to get the perform

0:25:26 > 0:25:34

0:25:35 > 0:25:39checkpoint. He's only just on target for 16th. He is on target to push

0:25:39 > 0:25:44Bottas out of the top 16 here. It would be enough but he's not on the

0:25:44 > 0:25:48same kind of lap pace that we saw from Jenson Button earlier on. We've

0:25:48 > 0:25:52got the checkered flag out. This is going to be his last opportunity.

0:25:52 > 0:25:57Perez, then, has he done enough to escape the clutches of the drop

0:25:57 > 0:26:01zone? He crosses the line and he has. He's gone 14th. That pushes

0:26:01 > 0:26:05both of the Williams out of the qualifying in the very first segment

0:26:05 > 0:26:10here. Both Valtteri Bottas and Pastor Maldonado. Bottas has crossed

0:26:10 > 0:26:18the line. Maldonado is still on a lap, but I'm not sure it's a quick

0:26:18 > 0:26:23enough lap. Here comes Maldonado now. No, it's not enough. Bottas

0:26:23 > 0:26:28outqualifies his team-mate yet again. Jules Bianchi, no, he hasn't,

0:26:28 > 0:26:32Pic has gone ahead of Bianchi there right at the last moment. Great

0:26:32 > 0:26:36battle between Charles Pic and Jules Bianchi. Pic just takes it on what

0:26:36 > 0:26:40he calls his favourite circuit. Bianchi I think has finished his run

0:26:40 > 0:26:45now. He's not going to do it. This is Valtteri Bottas down at the

0:26:45 > 0:26:51hairpin. Just a little mistake. don't think that cost him too much

0:26:51 > 0:27:00time. He hit the exit apex. Not good for the tyre if you systematically

0:27:00 > 0:27:04keep locking up. Sadly, despite the celebrations of 600 Grand Prix for

0:27:04 > 0:27:12Williams, has -- it has ended in qualifying early on. Both Williams

0:27:13 > 0:27:22are out of qualifying. Let's confirm who's been knocked out. Pic 17,

0:27:23 > 0:27:29

0:27:29 > 0:27:35to put it through to Q 2, what are the problems? No massive car balance

0:27:35 > 0:27:40problems. The car was the whole week and it's been not that bad to drive,

0:27:40 > 0:27:46just the main problem is lack of overall grip and lack of downforce.

0:27:46 > 0:27:50So still the others are too quick for us and we couldn't get out of

0:27:50 > 0:27:56Q1. Is there anywhere to make up time in the race tomorrow? I think

0:27:56 > 0:28:03it's going to be difficult. Pure pace wise, we don't have the pace to

0:28:03 > 0:28:09get it in the top ten. So, the best thing we can do is try to choose the

0:28:09 > 0:28:11best strategy possible and keep pushing hard and race -- racing is

0:28:12 > 0:28:14very long, you never know what's going to happen. We need to stay in

0:28:15 > 0:28:20the race and hope that something special happens. Hope something

0:28:20 > 0:28:25special happens too, thank you very much. Let's rejoin Ben and David now

0:28:25 > 0:28:29for commentary. Here's Q2. The second part of qualifying gets

0:28:29 > 0:28:34under way and there's a bit more hurry to get out there now.

0:28:34 > 0:28:40Jean-Eric Vergne is the first to come out on circuit. Fastest time in

0:28:40 > 0:28:43that first segment was for Felipe Massa in the Ferrari 1. 30. 5. That

0:28:43 > 0:28:48was a second away from what Sebastien Vettel achieved this

0:28:48 > 0:28:52morning in free practice. We'll have to see whether that's going to be

0:28:52 > 0:29:02repeated because Massa hasn't reached Q3 in the last three races.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05

0:29:05 > 0:29:10Operate qui good only a tenth out, 1. 3 1. 6, you said 1. 3. 1. 5.

0:29:10 > 0:29:14Williams are struggling. They're the top teams that have dropped out in

0:29:15 > 0:29:19Q1. I'm surprised by how people use the tyres there. We know the soft

0:29:20 > 0:29:26tyre is a major step to the medium tyre and yet a lot of guys come out

0:29:26 > 0:29:32to the medium tyres. Using two sets in Q1 is not the right thing to do.

0:29:32 > 0:29:35Mercedes and Red Bull getting through on the medium tyre.

0:29:35 > 0:29:42Silverstone Mercedes ran the soft tyre in the first qualifying and the

0:29:42 > 0:29:47same tyre in Q2. They're probably trying to do is the same thing here.

0:29:47 > 0:29:52The harder tyre is the most stable race tyre. You want two sets of them

0:29:52 > 0:29:58at least. You were close on the first mark, what can we reckon in

0:29:58 > 0:30:03the top ten? A tenth of a second out sorry. I think you're looking at 30.

0:30:03 > 0:30:068 to get into the top ten. There are a few guys there that ran are the

0:30:06 > 0:30:07harder tyre and they're going to harder tyre and they're going to

0:30:07 > 0:30:17harder tyre and they're going to harder tyre and they're going to

0:30:17 > 0:30:18

0:30:19 > 0:30:23step up quite a lot. We were looking at forced and eight teams covered by

0:30:23 > 0:30:33zero point ten of a second. So it will be close getting into the top

0:30:33 > 0:30:39

0:30:39 > 0:30:45ten. That is what it is all about now. Daniel McArdle had that great

0:30:45 > 0:30:52event at Silverstone, certainly worked for him. Toro Rosso not in

0:30:52 > 0:30:57such good shape this time. conditions are a bit more tricky on

0:30:57 > 0:31:03this type of circuit. I would be surprised if they can make it

0:31:03 > 0:31:13through to the top ten shootout. But Jean-Eric Vergne has been pretty

0:31:13 > 0:31:19

0:31:19 > 0:31:29good so far. He has raised here in the past. It is not as if he has had

0:31:29 > 0:31:33

0:31:33 > 0:31:38to learn the track. We are on board with him now. You get into a hugely

0:31:38 > 0:31:45high energy braking zone for the chicane. Then into the last ten.

0:31:45 > 0:31:53Getting on the power as early as possible. He is fastest for the

0:31:53 > 0:31:59moment. Is that going to be enough as we go through the rest of it? He

0:31:59 > 0:32:06did 31.6 earlier on sell a definite improvement. The track temperature

0:32:06 > 0:32:12now at 40 degrees. On board with Paul di Resta. No evidence of the

0:32:13 > 0:32:17wheels locking. Then up to this final turn. Is he going to be faster

0:32:17 > 0:32:27than the Toro Rosso? He looks marginally quicker at the moment.

0:32:27 > 0:32:28

0:32:28 > 0:32:33is faster but it is marginal. wanted to come to you, Tom, in the

0:32:33 > 0:32:37pit lane. This morning it was interesting the difference between

0:32:37 > 0:32:43Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton did not seem that

0:32:43 > 0:32:49happy with his car. Absolutely. It was a bit of a repeat of

0:32:49 > 0:32:55Silverstone. Lewis was not happy in the build-up to qualifying. But this

0:32:55 > 0:32:59morning he was not .6 of a second behind his team-mate. I think he

0:32:59 > 0:33:07will take confidence from that lap that he did in Q1. He had been

0:33:07 > 0:33:15complaining yesterday of understeer. The car looked quite stable during

0:33:15 > 0:33:20the Q1 session. So hopefully he is on to a good thing. Well Kimi

0:33:20 > 0:33:29Raikkonen now, this is better from him. He took his first ever pole

0:33:29 > 0:33:38position right here ten years ago. This was Nico Rosberg a moment ago.

0:33:38 > 0:33:48Down into turn one. Locks out. He could have flat spotted that tyre

0:33:48 > 0:33:53aiming for the Apec. His team-mate Lewis Hamilton is fastest of all in

0:33:53 > 0:33:58the first sector. We will just follow him around the rest of the

0:33:58 > 0:34:04lap. He is on the soft tyres, not the medium tyres that are used in

0:34:04 > 0:34:11the first part of qualifying. Kimi Raikkonen fastest at the moment in

0:34:11 > 0:34:17the Lotus. Hamilton is quicker than that. On target for a better lap.

0:34:17 > 0:34:21Not necessarily pushing to the ultimate limit. The main task is to

0:34:21 > 0:34:25get into the top ten and that is when they really go for it. Of

0:34:25 > 0:34:35course he is trying to get back to back pole positions. He comes across

0:34:35 > 0:34:37

0:34:37 > 0:34:42the line. 1.30.1. It looked like he opened the doctors quite late and

0:34:42 > 0:34:47that could have cost him some time. The driver has to call for the

0:34:47 > 0:34:53activation. We are seeing the same kind of time differences that we

0:34:53 > 0:35:01have seen all day. Just not able to exploit the performance of the

0:35:01 > 0:35:08Ferrari so far. The track temperature climbing all the time.

0:35:08 > 0:35:15Alonso goes third with that. If fraction of the Lotus. Lotus and

0:35:15 > 0:35:21Ferrari, very similar paces from the car this morning. But a little off

0:35:21 > 0:35:27what Mercedes and Red Bull can do. We take another look at Nico

0:35:27 > 0:35:32Rosberg. Is he faster than Hamilton? He is one tenth down on

0:35:32 > 0:35:37Hamilton to that second checkpoint. Can you make that up in the final

0:35:37 > 0:35:42sector was Mike you absolutely can. It is all about the change of

0:35:42 > 0:35:47direction. On this last corner you are braking all the way in. And

0:35:47 > 0:35:51immediately on the power. You have to be very comfortable putting on

0:35:51 > 0:35:57the lateral load through the town. He does not quite make up the time.

0:35:58 > 0:36:04He is second. These lap times are looking very strong for the moment.

0:36:04 > 0:36:11He is safely through. He will not have worry about going back out.

0:36:11 > 0:36:16Looking at a replay of Rosberg, Peres only made it into the top 16.

0:36:16 > 0:36:22He is now out on track. Getting a little busier out there with just

0:36:22 > 0:36:29over seven minutes to go. Kimi Raikkonen currently four tenths down

0:36:29 > 0:36:38on Hamilton who is on a new set of tyres. That is interesting to hear

0:36:38 > 0:36:48for Lotus. Grojean currently fastest. Both the Lotus cars going

0:36:48 > 0:36:49

0:36:49 > 0:36:59well. There are two doctors zones. Red Bull get ready to send both cars

0:36:59 > 0:37:05

0:37:05 > 0:37:10out. Jensen Button, that time only good enough for tenths. Peres spent

0:37:10 > 0:37:16his early racing career in Germany after his initial first laps in

0:37:16 > 0:37:23Mexico and the United states. But as he crosses the line he is in 14th.

0:37:23 > 0:37:30So his circuit knowledge not helping him at all. Quite some way of what

0:37:30 > 0:37:39Jensen Button did. Just a small lock-up into the hairpin. We will

0:37:39 > 0:37:49see a lot of that. Both the McLaren cars slower at than they managed in

0:37:49 > 0:37:57

0:37:57 > 0:38:06the first session. Mark Webber, almost the same gap. It is Hamilton

0:38:06 > 0:38:11who has the fastest overall lap time. It is who is going to get into

0:38:11 > 0:38:18the top ten that we are looking at. We would expect of battle and Webber

0:38:18 > 0:38:21to be in there. He was early on the power. The contrast in performance

0:38:21 > 0:38:28between the Red Bull and the McLaren, clearly struggling with

0:38:28 > 0:38:34understeer. Virtually identical lap times for Mark Webber and Sebastian

0:38:34 > 0:38:41Vettel. Very little to choose between them. Are they going to be

0:38:41 > 0:38:51the Mercedes times? Vettel goes fastest. But Mark Webber has done

0:38:51 > 0:38:58

0:38:58 > 0:39:03something very similar. It is 1.3 at the moment. His first sector was not

0:39:03 > 0:39:11too bad but there is masses of oversteer. So a bit more performance

0:39:11 > 0:39:18to come from the Red Bull. But is that that says it is that last

0:39:18 > 0:39:24sector that is the problem. In the morning session he lost the time in

0:39:24 > 0:39:28the middle. And now seems to be putting a lap together here which

0:39:28 > 0:39:34will put Sebastian Vettel's time under threat. Lotus have been

0:39:34 > 0:39:43confident all weekend. Grojean goes across the line, second fastest.

0:39:43 > 0:39:53Again it is that last sector. not going to see Mark back out.

0:39:53 > 0:39:54

0:39:54 > 0:40:04Hamilton fastest of all in that last sector. Grojean dropped a couple of

0:40:04 > 0:40:06

0:40:06 > 0:40:10tenths. A lot of reaction to the curb through that she came. He

0:40:10 > 0:40:16should be getting the car as straight as possible for the exit.

0:40:16 > 0:40:21Showing some great pace for the Lotus. We are looking at Fernando

0:40:21 > 0:40:26Alonso now as he comes up to that second check point. These higher

0:40:26 > 0:40:31temperatures do seem to be switching things the way of Lotus and Ferrari.

0:40:31 > 0:40:39And they are now right in the mix. Let us see how the end this lap.

0:40:39 > 0:40:49There is not much to it. A slight hesitance there before opening the

0:40:49 > 0:40:50

0:40:50 > 0:41:00power. He is fastest. 1.29.9. The battle is for the top ten at the

0:41:00 > 0:41:03

0:41:03 > 0:41:10moment. At the moment there is is up on his lap to get into the top ten.

0:41:10 > 0:41:20But Felipe Massa is fastest of anybody so far in this session to

0:41:20 > 0:41:21

0:41:21 > 0:41:29the second checkpoint. Paul di Resta is in danger. I think he is going to

0:41:29 > 0:41:35have to run again. Felipe Massa goes fastest, great lap from him. Ferrari

0:41:35 > 0:41:43showing great pace. The chequered flag about to come out. We have

0:41:43 > 0:41:48several cars on laps. And in the final stages. Including Daniel

0:41:48 > 0:41:56Riccardo who may just get into the top ten. He pushes out his own

0:41:56 > 0:42:04team-mate. That is so significant. Here comes Jensen Button. He goes

0:42:04 > 0:42:07into a disposition. Kimi Raikkonen now in danger. But he has just gone

0:42:07 > 0:42:13fastest of anyone in the first sector. Di Resta being pushed down

0:42:13 > 0:42:19and it looks as if he is out of it. Hulkenberg has gone up to eight in

0:42:19 > 0:42:26the cyber will stop that has rarely been in the top ten this year. That

0:42:26 > 0:42:35is dangerous territory for Rosberg. Let us just see what happens. Adrian

0:42:35 > 0:42:41Sutil is out. Rosberg could be out. Rosberg in danger. Raikkonen up to

0:42:41 > 0:42:47second. And Rosberg has been squeezed out of the top ten. What

0:42:47 > 0:42:52have Mercedes done here? The German driver in the German car, an

0:42:52 > 0:42:58opportunity to be the first ever German driver in a German card to

0:42:58 > 0:43:04get pole position in a German bomb pre-. The team have known it because

0:43:04 > 0:43:10he was not out at the end to defend his own position. Mossberg is out.

0:43:10 > 0:43:18The most dramatic knockout, Rosberg is out. So is Paul di Resta. Peres

0:43:18 > 0:43:23is out. Gutierrez is out. Adrian Sutil is out and so is Jean-Eric

0:43:23 > 0:43:30Vergne. Did you think you had a chance of

0:43:30 > 0:43:36going through to Q3 today? Not really. This week I just cannot get

0:43:36 > 0:43:46the card dial into how I like it. I have struggled. I think it was more

0:43:46 > 0:43:51damage limitation. Why do you think you have problems here in

0:43:51 > 0:43:57particular? I do not know. It is just getting the car balanced.

0:43:57 > 0:44:02Everything seemed to be a compromise. The baseline seems to be

0:44:02 > 0:44:09where we are. We need to work on it because some of our competitors have

0:44:09 > 0:44:18got more of an advantage. So there is a lot of work to do tomorrow.

0:44:18 > 0:44:24Fingers crossed. It is time for Q3.

0:44:24 > 0:44:27Following free pack this this morning we thought it would be a

0:44:27 > 0:44:33straight fight between Mercedes and Red Bull. But the increase in

0:44:33 > 0:44:38temperature have brought Red Bull and Ferrari into the mix. I think

0:44:38 > 0:44:48that is a fair conclusion. Nico Rosberg definitely suffered from the

0:44:48 > 0:44:52

0:44:52 > 0:44:59track improving just that little bit. Some of those lap times, we

0:44:59 > 0:45:06have never even seen anything like it over the weekend. He was saying

0:45:06 > 0:45:1230.8 but in the end the cut-off was a lot quicker. Up until the last

0:45:12 > 0:45:16minute of time I thought 30.8 was going to be it. But guys suddenly

0:45:16 > 0:45:21who have never done anywhere near that lap time, the track suddenly

0:45:21 > 0:45:26seemed to get better. The wind has changed direction and perhaps that

0:45:27 > 0:45:34has made a difference. It makes a major contribution around here.

0:45:34 > 0:45:44do not want to get a tailwind in the middle of a long corner.

0:45:44 > 0:45:44

0:45:44 > 0:45:51predictions for pole position? They've used two new sets of tyres,

0:45:51 > 0:45:55get the temperatures into the brakes. I'd be look at a 29. 1 for

0:45:55 > 0:46:00pole. It's ambitious, but that's the area we're going into. We'll have to

0:46:00 > 0:46:06see. He's got lots of supporters has Fernando Alonso. Twice a winner

0:46:06 > 0:46:12here. He had that one pole position. In qualifying so far this year he

0:46:12 > 0:46:18hasn't had a single fronted-row start. Hills best is a few third --

0:46:18 > 0:46:25his best is a few third places. He hasn't been top five on the grid in

0:46:25 > 0:46:31the last three Grand Prixes. Sebastien Vettel is on a new set of

0:46:31 > 0:46:37tyres, so is Mark Webber. We are looking at Kimi Raikkonen now.

0:46:37 > 0:46:42Through ten, uses the KER on exit. DRS wide-open along the back

0:46:42 > 0:46:46straight. He'll be up to about 190mph by the time he buzzes into

0:46:46 > 0:46:49the limiter before braking for the chicane. He's gone within in

0:46:49 > 0:46:57qualifying here in the past. He should have won the race in several

0:46:57 > 0:47:02occasions, 2003, 2005, he was in lead position and things -- 2005, he

0:47:02 > 0:47:07was in lead position and things went wrong for him. That's 1. 29. 9. Not

0:47:07 > 0:47:10as fast as Massa in the second part of qualifying. Quick reminder that

0:47:10 > 0:47:16Felipe Massa has topped both qualifying segments so far. The

0:47:16 > 0:47:20Brazilian driving really well. But Vettel now quicker with a 1. 29. 6.

0:47:20 > 0:47:24Raikkonen pushed back to second. Grosjean is third. It's interesting,

0:47:24 > 0:47:29Hamilton fastest of all in the first sector. He's a couple of tenths down

0:47:29 > 0:47:32on Vettel's pace in the middle. That neutralises the gain he has over

0:47:32 > 0:47:37Vettel in the first sector. Webber going third, but here comes

0:47:37 > 0:47:45Hamilton. This could be close. Hamilton's lap is looking good. Yes,

0:47:45 > 0:47:48it is! 1. 29. 5 for Lewis Hamilton, on a new set of soft tyres. He's

0:47:48 > 0:47:53faster than Sebastien Vettel. Raikkonen's time a bit off that but

0:47:53 > 0:47:58on a used set of tyres. Raikkonen may have performance in hand there.

0:47:58 > 0:48:02He's in the hunt for pole position today. Mark Webber is fourth. Romain

0:48:02 > 0:48:06Grosjean fifth. Which tyre is Jenson Button on? He's on the soft. Tom, I

0:48:06 > 0:48:10know you were speaking to a few of the teams after free practice, from

0:48:10 > 0:48:14what you were learning, we might not necessarily see everyone use the

0:48:14 > 0:48:19soft tyre in this session. Absolutely right. It's going to be

0:48:19 > 0:48:25fascinating to see what the Ferraris come back out on. Because the soft

0:48:25 > 0:48:30is a much faster tyre if you can qualify in pole position, but you

0:48:30 > 0:48:40risk, if you're only starting in the latter part of the top ten, you risk

0:48:40 > 0:48:41

0:48:41 > 0:48:46coming out of the first pitstop in traffic. It will be interesting to

0:48:46 > 0:48:50see what Ferrari and Lotus do. China Red Bull tried that. Sebastien

0:48:51 > 0:48:54Vettel didn't do a lap on the faster tyre. He chose the medium tyre.

0:48:55 > 0:48:58Didn't set a lap at all and did a long first stint. It didn't work for

0:48:58 > 0:49:05him on that occasion. It was Fernando Alonso who won the Chinese

0:49:05 > 0:49:13Grand Prix starting on the soft tyre. But we damageary Alonso -- we

0:49:13 > 0:49:17damage damage -- gather Lanza is on that tyre. -- Alonso. Jenson Button

0:49:17 > 0:49:21continues around the lap. We're not expecting him to leap to the top.

0:49:21 > 0:49:31Solid top-ten start is what McLaren will be hoping for. They'll be

0:49:31 > 0:49:35

0:49:35 > 0:49:40reasonably satisfied with the way on the medium compound tyre. I think

0:49:40 > 0:49:45Jenson has given up on this lap. That's interesting. Is he going

0:49:45 > 0:49:49again? No. He's coming back into the pits. Hasn't done a lap. If he came

0:49:50 > 0:49:56out on the medium tyres and do a time, then he still would choose to

0:49:56 > 0:50:02start on the medium Tour. He's not actually decided yet. Tom? Ben, I'm

0:50:02 > 0:50:09just by the McLaren pit now. They're putting a set of medium tyres ready.

0:50:09 > 0:50:12We're dropping the rear pressures a bit again. Lots of strategy here.

0:50:12 > 0:50:16It's all about the race tomorrow. It's not necessarily about being the

0:50:17 > 0:50:25king of qualifying today. There you are, the medium compound tyre on the

0:50:25 > 0:50:29Ferrari. That's a good spot, Tom. A few people are following that

0:50:29 > 0:50:34strategy, concentrating on where they can get the maximum points

0:50:34 > 0:50:41tomorrow. Mark Webber is going with a set of the sosts. It's very

0:50:41 > 0:50:46interesting -- softs. It's very interesting Ferrari deciding not to

0:50:46 > 0:50:50go for the the ultimate lap time. They are totally focussed on the

0:50:50 > 0:50:55race here. We know the medium compound tyre is probably a second a

0:50:55 > 0:51:00lap slower than the yellow-walled soft tyre. I wonder if he'll put in

0:51:00 > 0:51:06a really attacking lap or just do a gentle lap to set a time. Just put a

0:51:06 > 0:51:11heat soak through the tyres. He does appear to be quite gentle. He's

0:51:11 > 0:51:16doing exactly that. He's putting the tyres through that heat cycle which

0:51:16 > 0:51:20will cure the rubber slightly when they sit in the blankets overnight.

0:51:20 > 0:51:23They won't be switched on. They go cold and get switched on again

0:51:23 > 0:51:28tomorrow morning, brought up to temperature, ready for the race.

0:51:28 > 0:51:32Looks as though it's just the three of them, Alonso, Massa and Button,

0:51:32 > 0:51:39using the medium compound tyre. Daniel Ricciardo, Nico Hulkenberg

0:51:39 > 0:51:45are on the soft. I'd be surprise today we can beat the Ferraris guys.

0:51:45 > 0:51:50The McLaren is unlikely to be quicker than the far oarery on the

0:51:50 > 0:51:55medium compound tyre, so is it worth using the tyre? Jenson should know

0:51:55 > 0:51:58what he should expect to do on that compound of tyre. He's just done a

0:51:58 > 0:52:03very slow sector has Jenson. I wonder if he will just come back in.

0:52:03 > 0:52:10He doesn't have to set a time. Sebastien Vettel wide at turn one.

0:52:10 > 0:52:20He gets away with it, but it's a short run to two. Runs wide on the

0:52:20 > 0:52:27exit to two. He uses more of the kerb at the apex. It's certainly not

0:52:27 > 0:52:32been clean. 29. 4 it's two tenths slower than Hamilton in that sector.

0:52:32 > 0:52:37No improvement in the first sector with the new tyres over last time

0:52:37 > 0:52:42out. It will come down to sectors two and three if he gets pole this

0:52:42 > 0:52:46afternoon. Will he outqualify web ebb here -- Webber here, which he

0:52:46 > 0:52:49hasn't done in the past. He's yet to win his home Grand Prix. A bit of

0:52:49 > 0:52:55pressure on Sebastien Vettel's shoulders. The first tarring set to

0:52:55 > 0:53:05beat the ultimate -- target is to beat the ultimate time set by

0:53:05 > 0:53:07

0:53:07 > 0:53:17fraction of a second. It's slightly slower than his best middle sector

0:53:17 > 0:53:22

0:53:22 > 0:53:27slower than his best middle sector crosses the line and he goes

0:53:27 > 0:53:32fastest! But we still have other cars. Hamilton is on a quick lap.

0:53:32 > 0:53:36He's gone faster than anybody in the first sector. Mark Webber with a

0:53:36 > 0:53:41good first sector. Romain Grosjean is one to keep an eye on. He's out

0:53:41 > 0:53:46there. Kimi Raikkonen not going quickly at the moment. Webber is up.

0:53:46 > 0:53:50Grosjean slow in the first sector, but fast in the middle sectors. I

0:53:51 > 0:53:55don't think Grosjean is in it for the pole. Has crossed the line in

0:53:55 > 0:54:00third. Grosjean is fourth. The two Lotus have done well. Who will take

0:54:00 > 0:54:03pole position - Hamilton is on a great lap. Mark Webber trying to

0:54:03 > 0:54:07beat the time set by Sebastien Vettel. He can't. He's third. He's

0:54:07 > 0:54:12behind Hamilton. So it's all down to Hamilton now. Can he claim pole

0:54:12 > 0:54:19position like he did a week ago at Silverstone? Can he take it back

0:54:19 > 0:54:23from Sebastien Vettel? He's done it! Lewis Hamilton takes back-to-back

0:54:23 > 0:54:31pole positions. The British Grand Prix and the German Grand Prix. He

0:54:31 > 0:54:37has now earned his 29th career pole position. He has matched the great

0:54:37 > 0:54:42Fangio with that. For Mercedes they have taken pole position here, first

0:54:42 > 0:54:47time since 1954 that Mercedes have taken pole position on home turf.

0:54:47 > 0:54:55He's the first British driver, well, let's listen. That's what I'm

0:54:55 > 0:54:59talking about, Lewis. P 1, top job! A tenth faster than Vettel. You can

0:54:59 > 0:55:05hear the delight in the background. He's the first British drier to do

0:55:05 > 0:55:10it here since you did in 2000. used to hearing Lewis saying" That's

0:55:10 > 0:55:15what I'm talking about". Not so much rolling off the tongue from his

0:55:15 > 0:55:21engineer. But a pat on the back all round. Feeling for Lewis Hamilton.

0:55:21 > 0:55:25Absolutely superb. He takes pole position here. After doing it at

0:55:25 > 0:55:29Silverstone maybe he can do what Rosberg did to him and steal his

0:55:29 > 0:55:39team-mate's home race, that will be his target. Let's look at the line

0:55:39 > 0:56:00

0:56:00 > 0:56:10his target. Let's look at the line Perez didn't hake it into the top

0:56:10 > 0:56:25

0:56:25 > 0:56:28congratulations. What a lap. You seem to have had a few problems this

0:56:28 > 0:56:32weekend, but when it mattered you nailed it. Yeah, really so

0:56:32 > 0:56:37surprised. It's been a disaster this weekend. P 1 the car felt great.

0:56:37 > 0:56:42Then we made changes and it got worse and worse. P2 wasn't so good.

0:56:42 > 0:56:50Made changes last night and the car felt even worse today. You know when

0:56:50 > 0:56:55you get lost by #36r3 it's -- P3 it's almost impossible to recover

0:56:55 > 0:56:59it. I really felt lost. I thought that we would struggle to get into

0:56:59 > 0:57:04the top ten. We made the right changes and the car felt great on my

0:57:04 > 0:57:07first lap. I was almost up there with Nico. I knew we had a chance to

0:57:07 > 0:57:10compete at the front. It was a compete at the front. It was a

0:57:10 > 0:57:16wonderful lap. Can you talk us round. It looks like it was first

0:57:17 > 0:57:20sector where you really nailed it. Turn one, missed the apex a bit,

0:57:20 > 0:57:25tried to avoid the different camber drop off. Got on the power quick

0:57:25 > 0:57:30into turn two. Got on the power, touched the kerb a bit. Nice and

0:57:30 > 0:57:34deep into turn three. Car started to turn, you get hard on the power, up

0:57:34 > 0:57:40shift to third and get a good exit on the KERS all the way down to turn

0:57:40 > 0:57:46five. You carry awes much speed as you can through -- as much speed as

0:57:46 > 0:57:51you can through turn five. All the way down here you adjust the brake

0:57:51 > 0:57:55bias to make sure you're reason for turn seven. Braking heavily trying

0:57:55 > 0:57:59not to sacrifice too much on the entry but make sure you get the exit

0:57:59 > 0:58:03because it's a long way up the hill. Making sure I'm shifting ought am

0:58:03 > 0:58:08time here. This is such a cool part of the track. I can't see the track

0:58:08 > 0:58:12in the car. Here I had a big oversteer moment on the exit here. I

0:58:12 > 0:58:17had to lift. I lost a tenth there. Back on the power and managed to

0:58:17 > 0:58:22recover a keep a part of. It down here with the DRS flat out, moving

0:58:22 > 0:58:27the brake bias again into position trying to get back to the right

0:58:27 > 0:58:32signed -- side, brake again. Then you nail it and hope you get a good

0:58:32 > 0:58:37exit. I put as much speed as I could into the last corner. The car is a

0:58:37 > 0:58:43bit nervous but use all the road on the exit and I am really happy. I

0:58:43 > 0:58:47could see that I was 0. 14 up. Fortunately that was enough. You

0:58:47 > 0:58:54knew you were on line for pole position. How much time when you had

0:58:54 > 0:59:00the oversteer moment, how much time due leave on the table? I was. 22

0:59:00 > 0:59:04Upstarts to that point. It went back down to a tenth. But I gained it

0:59:04 > 0:59:09back. Pole position today, begs the question - tomorrow, race settings,

0:59:09 > 0:59:14how are you you feeling? Again, because we changed the car I really

0:59:14 > 0:59:19have no idea how the car will behave tomorrow. I hope that it debads like

0:59:19 > 0:59:22it did today. The Red Bull has -- behaves like it did today. The Red

0:59:22 > 0:59:26Bull has been good today. It will be difficult to beat them. We're in a

0:59:27 > 0:59:30position to do that. Fingers crossed. I didn't get the home win

0:59:30 > 0:59:33at Silverstone, which would have meant so much to me. This is the

0:59:33 > 0:59:36home Grand Prix for the team so I hope that I can do it for them.

0:59:36 > 0:59:40hope that I can do it for them. wish you all the best. Mixed

0:59:40 > 0:59:45fortunes for the Mercedes boys. fortunes for the Mercedes boys.

0:59:45 > 0:59:49Let's hear from Nico now. To go from second to 11th, must be

0:59:49 > 0:59:53galling, what happened? I think the team underestimated how much the

0:59:53 > 0:59:58other people were going quicker. That's it. A long day out there for

0:59:58 > 1:00:03you tomorrow. What do you think is achievable? From 11th, it's really

1:00:03 > 1:00:05going to be difficult. I will dot best I can and try to get up the

1:00:05 > 1:00:14best I can and try to get up the best I can and try to get up the

1:00:14 > 1:00:21grid. Cell and despondent Nico Rosberg quite understandably. How

1:00:21 > 1:00:25did that happen? We made our best judgement at the time. We were

1:00:25 > 1:00:31trying to conserve the tyre as per the final qualifying. Nicole

1:00:31 > 1:00:37achieved the cut-off time. But the track picked up more towards the end

1:00:37 > 1:00:42and we anticipated. It was incredibly close out there. How

1:00:42 > 1:00:49confident where you that you had a shot for the pole position? The

1:00:49 > 1:00:53first set Derek define the lap for Lewis Hamilton. Yet he seems to get

1:00:53 > 1:00:57it quite determination one qualifying came. He had not been

1:00:57 > 1:01:00happy with the balance of the car before then. But as soon as

1:01:00 > 1:01:10qualifying started he seemed to be happy and just made some small

1:01:10 > 1:01:16adjustments during qualifying. It will be interesting. When you talk

1:01:16 > 1:01:20about small adjustments, the setup of the car is fixed. But what can

1:01:20 > 1:01:25driver work with with his engineer? You can change the front wing, of

1:01:25 > 1:01:32course. You can do some electronic changes. Though tiny changes but

1:01:32 > 1:01:38they can be critical. In terms of the race pace tomorrow, what can

1:01:38 > 1:01:44Nico Rosberg do? Well he has the free choice of the tyres. We will

1:01:44 > 1:01:49look at a different strategy and see what we can do. We have struggled a

1:01:49 > 1:01:53bit to understand the tyres that we have got. The balance yesterday was

1:01:53 > 1:01:57not great. So I hope we have got a good balance and that will be the

1:01:57 > 1:02:01challenge. Because Red Bull on Friday looked as if they were having

1:02:01 > 1:02:07some tremendous race runs and we were struggling. Hopefully we will

1:02:08 > 1:02:12were struggling. Hopefully we will find it tomorrow.

1:02:12 > 1:02:18Tell us about your qualifying, Sebastian. Is the front row of the

1:02:18 > 1:02:23great enough for you? To be honest not the spot I was hoping for. But I

1:02:23 > 1:02:28could not get any closer. It was tough. Generally I was pretty happy

1:02:28 > 1:02:33with the car. We had a good car this morning and I was feeling confident.

1:02:33 > 1:02:40But that first sector did not come together. Despite the fact that the

1:02:40 > 1:02:45car felt fine. Just the time did not come. I then tried to make it up and

1:02:45 > 1:02:51we could not make up the loss. Lewis Hamilton was pretty quick this

1:02:51 > 1:02:58afternoon so well done to him. We will see what happens tomorrow. At

1:02:58 > 1:03:02least that keeps us sharp for tomorrow. So he seems like a man

1:03:02 > 1:03:09with a plan. I think he wanted to be on pole position. But they were

1:03:09 > 1:03:16lacking in the first sector which is quite a technical part of the lap. I

1:03:16 > 1:03:23think Red Bull are the ones to watch. Well we can hear now from

1:03:23 > 1:03:27Mark Webber who has got a great track record around here. How do you

1:03:28 > 1:03:32feel about a third heading into tomorrow with Mac pretty happy.

1:03:32 > 1:03:40was a tricky session. The track was the hottest it has been all weekend.

1:03:40 > 1:03:47The team did a good job to pull back together. We got the most out of the

1:03:47 > 1:03:52car, pretty much. We do have a strategy about how it is going to

1:03:52 > 1:03:56work tomorrow and we will see if that is enough. We can push hard

1:03:56 > 1:04:02from that position and get the most out of it. So what do you think that

1:04:02 > 1:04:08that plan could possibly be? could be two stops, three stops. It

1:04:08 > 1:04:15remains to be seen. They have gone for the options tire, contrary to

1:04:15 > 1:04:21what we have seen from Ferrari. So the real question tonight is how far

1:04:21 > 1:04:26can any of the top drivers and teams go on those options? From Friday

1:04:26 > 1:04:32they are expecting it to fall to pieces after about five or six laps.

1:04:33 > 1:04:36There was quite a game going on through qualifying. It was always

1:04:36 > 1:04:46going to be interesting to see what the strategy would be with the

1:04:46 > 1:04:51tyres. Nico Rosberg will almost certainly go off on the prime tyres.

1:04:51 > 1:04:59The teams will be watching closely and try to update their strategy. It

1:04:59 > 1:05:06has been a good day for Lotus, happy with that?

1:05:06 > 1:05:13It was a good surprise. We have seen different performances, making the

1:05:13 > 1:05:18tyres working or not. I think we improved through qualifying.

1:05:18 > 1:05:25seems that you fastest of all in the middle sector but lost some time in

1:05:25 > 1:05:31the first sector. Is there one area where you last time in particular?

1:05:31 > 1:05:36think I had some oversteer and then I tried to recover some time in to.

1:05:36 > 1:05:43But with the curb on the outside, then you lose something like three

1:05:43 > 1:05:53tenths. So knowing you are down, how did you manage to keep it together

1:05:53 > 1:05:59and claw-back time in the middle sector? It is hard. It was almost

1:06:00 > 1:06:06three tenths. And I thought that was the end of my lap. Then I said no,

1:06:06 > 1:06:12you have to finish and give something, get everything you have.

1:06:12 > 1:06:16So I adjusted into the different corners. So you just experimented

1:06:16 > 1:06:23and did an amazing sector. So the pay is looking good overall for

1:06:23 > 1:06:29tomorrow? It is looking good. can think that by the favourite and

1:06:29 > 1:06:34it can be a disaster. Sometimes it is the opposite. We do not fully

1:06:34 > 1:06:41understand everything. Can I ask you about your season so far? This time

1:06:41 > 1:06:46last year you had 61 points. You are sitting on 26. Do you think you can

1:06:46 > 1:06:52start addressing that tomorrow? For sure I will try. In a few races we

1:06:52 > 1:06:57should have got more points than we did. Sometimes it is bad luck. We

1:06:57 > 1:07:04had a suspension in Barcelona when we were looking good. In Monaco we

1:07:04 > 1:07:09were blocked in qualifying. And then in Silverstone the front wing just

1:07:09 > 1:07:16broke through the race. We know it does happen. We lost a lot of

1:07:16 > 1:07:22performance. So it was a difficult time. But as long as you believe you

1:07:22 > 1:07:26can do it it is good to show that we are still here. Well we hope to push

1:07:26 > 1:07:31a bit of good luck you away. Thank you very much.

1:07:31 > 1:07:39Fernando Alonso looking at the long game for tomorrow, I imagine.

1:07:39 > 1:07:45Starting on the medium tyres. think there is no clear strategy at

1:07:45 > 1:07:55the moment. We did something different in bed to the normal Q3

1:07:55 > 1:07:55

1:07:55 > 1:08:01start. We cannot be sure until tomorrow how the race develops. With

1:08:01 > 1:08:07the positions of the grid in fifth and sixth with the soft tyre, six

1:08:07 > 1:08:12and seven with the medium tyres, it is not that big a deal. And we have

1:08:12 > 1:08:19a new window opening for strategy. We will see the result tomorrow. He

1:08:19 > 1:08:24does not sound to convince about the strategy. There is no question he is

1:08:24 > 1:08:30out of position from what they would normally expect. The first lap can

1:08:30 > 1:08:33be quite messy. A lot of bunching of the cars. He is also behind his

1:08:33 > 1:08:39team-mate. And if they applied the normal rules of qualifying position

1:08:39 > 1:08:44gets the strategic choice, that gives the advantage to Felipe Massa.

1:08:45 > 1:08:49But I think quite simply they do not know today because the tyres are

1:08:50 > 1:08:54falling away based on Friday morning. It is expected to be even

1:08:54 > 1:09:01hotter again tomorrow. Well we can find out more about their strategy

1:09:01 > 1:09:04from the team bus. It looks like your car was quick enough for pole

1:09:04 > 1:09:11position this afternoon but you went for a different strategy. We took

1:09:11 > 1:09:15the approach of thinking forward to tomorrow. And of course tomorrow we

1:09:15 > 1:09:21will see we were right. But I think we considered the elements that we

1:09:21 > 1:09:28had and it was the right thing to do. Will you not tempted to split

1:09:28 > 1:09:34the strategy? No, we believe by doing that we could could have

1:09:34 > 1:09:38screwed up the other one. So I think we did the best we could today.

1:09:38 > 1:09:46you explain your thinking? How do you think the decision will help you

1:09:46 > 1:09:52tomorrow with Mac while the cost to pit at the end, there will be a lot

1:09:52 > 1:09:58of traffic. Very simple. Making that sound quite simple but sometimes

1:09:58 > 1:10:02they do go for a dual link strategy. What do you think about going for

1:10:02 > 1:10:07exactly the same? I think they believe that that will be a better

1:10:07 > 1:10:15strategy for them to get the maximum points. There is a big asset between

1:10:15 > 1:10:20the prime tyres and the options. And there is the question of durability.

1:10:20 > 1:10:25Durability is not the issue. They are worried about going off on the

1:10:25 > 1:10:31same tyres and find themselves getting into a bunch of traffic.

1:10:31 > 1:10:36Then they could find themselves in some whinny compromising positions.

1:10:36 > 1:10:43There are a couple of doctors zones but the actual length are quite

1:10:43 > 1:10:50short. Jenson Button, looking at the long

1:10:50 > 1:10:56game for tomorrow? It is tricky for qualifying. It is a tricky balance

1:10:56 > 1:11:00between the heart and the head. If we went on the option tyre, P six

1:11:00 > 1:11:09would be where we had to get to make it worthwhile. I think we could have

1:11:09 > 1:11:16done that but it is the role of the dice going into qualifying. So, not

1:11:16 > 1:11:25too bad. Q2 was good, happy with that lap. I do not feel I did

1:11:25 > 1:11:27anything wrong. It is just a pity it is to be nine. It has been a bit of

1:11:27 > 1:11:36a lottery in this qualifying session. But he looks happier this

1:11:36 > 1:11:42weekend. He was within half a second off the fast just time in the middle

1:11:42 > 1:11:46part of qualifying. So that does show progress for McLaren. They are

1:11:46 > 1:11:53having to play the long game and try to get the maximum result for the

1:11:53 > 1:11:57team. So do you think that is the right thing to do? Absolutely.

1:11:57 > 1:12:02Realistically they're not looking like a team that can win the Grand

1:12:02 > 1:12:06Prix. So it is about damage limitation whilst they try to

1:12:06 > 1:12:16develop the car. Well let's take a look at the great now. Lewis

1:12:16 > 1:12:26

1:12:26 > 1:12:36Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel share Hulkenberg the second fastest

1:12:36 > 1:12:53

1:12:53 > 1:13:00German. Perez and Gutierrez share an moment. If timely moment for him to

1:13:00 > 1:13:06find his qualifying form. It is looking and shaping up to be a great

1:13:06 > 1:13:13race tomorrow. I think so.Strategy always plays a part. They have
