:01:03. > :01:10.Good morning from India. We have got a nice little spot here, in the

:01:11. > :01:14.build-up to you let. This is Lewis Hamilton's home from home on a race

:01:15. > :01:18.weekend. Gary Anderson is with me. It is great to be in the garage. We

:01:19. > :01:23.are trying to keep out of the way of all of these guys, who are working

:01:24. > :01:29.so hard. It is not always easy to predict, but how do you think it

:01:30. > :01:33.will go in Practice 2? I think Lewis Hamilton will be in the mix. The

:01:34. > :01:38.card does suit these kind of corners. As we saw with Lewis in the

:01:39. > :01:42.first session, if you braking errors, but that is what he has

:01:43. > :01:46.complained about in the Mercedes, he has not got confidence on the brakes

:01:47. > :01:50.yet. That is what these practice sessions are for. I think we will

:01:51. > :01:55.see the two of them up the front with the Red Bulls. This weekend,

:01:56. > :01:59.Sebastian Vettel is hoping to clinch his fourth consecutive title. He was

:02:00. > :02:03.fastest in practice this morning, and fastest in every practice

:02:04. > :02:09.session last year as well, which is ominous. Yes, it is. Obviously, they

:02:10. > :02:13.have got the best driver - car package. But Ross Brawn has come out

:02:14. > :02:17.and said, it is an inspiration for them, because it shows it can be

:02:18. > :02:23.done. There is no reason any other team cannot do it as well. Next

:02:24. > :02:27.year, the other teams will be going into it with a big breath of fresh

:02:28. > :02:30.air, knowing that they can do what Red Bull have done this year. Here

:02:31. > :02:42.are the standings... Red Bull could clinch the

:02:43. > :02:55.Constructors' Championship this week end. Ferrari, Mercedes and Lotus are

:02:56. > :03:04.battling it out for second. From 18 point of view, these positions can

:03:05. > :03:08.be worth millions of dollars. The battle for second could be worth $10

:03:09. > :03:13.million. That is why those three teams will keep fighting for it. You

:03:14. > :03:17.never know what could happen. A bit of rain, anything could happen, so

:03:18. > :03:24.you have got to keep fighting until that last chequered flag. Just

:03:25. > :03:28.behind us, Lewis Hamilton is getting Practice 1 is about setting the car

:03:29. > :03:32.up, so is Practice 2 about refining the details? It is. It happens at

:03:33. > :03:37.the same time of day as qualifying and the race, so it is more

:03:38. > :03:39.important, because the ambient temperature and the tractor which

:03:40. > :03:43.will be theoretically in the same sort of area. The drivers will be

:03:44. > :03:51.coming out on the medium tyre, doing a bit of a run, getting up to the

:03:52. > :03:57.time of day which represents the last qualifying time, and then

:03:58. > :04:02.coming back in and starting to practice the race run setup. You

:04:03. > :04:07.have got to get that track temperature to get the tyres to come

:04:08. > :04:11.in quickly. So, this is the best experiment for qualifying, and for

:04:12. > :04:15.the race condition. What about the guys around the car, how much does

:04:16. > :04:21.it mean to them? We hear all the time that it is all about the

:04:22. > :04:24.team... It is. Lewis Hamilton is sitting in the car, he is just one

:04:25. > :04:29.of these guys. Without any of them, he cannot do the job. The teams

:04:30. > :04:35.nowadays have got themselves into a routine. Everything happens at a

:04:36. > :04:38.certain time. Everything should just be about that routine, making sure

:04:39. > :04:43.everything is done correct become a and then the car will be ready to

:04:44. > :04:46.cross the red line. Lewis Hamilton, fit and well. We heard from Paul di

:04:47. > :04:53.Resta earlier, who had been feeling unwell. Another driver took his seat

:04:54. > :05:02.for Practice 1, but Paul di Resta is back in his car for this one. Over

:05:03. > :05:06.to James Allen. Welcome to the Buddh International Circuit. It is the

:05:07. > :05:10.third time we have been here. Sebastian Vettel has won both of the

:05:11. > :05:14.previous races from pole position, and who would bet against him doing

:05:15. > :05:19.three in a row? He only needs a fifth place in order to clinch his

:05:20. > :05:23.fourth consecutive drivers World Championships. Lost amongst all of

:05:24. > :05:27.that this weekend a little bit has been the story of the Constructors'

:05:28. > :05:31.Championship. That is also likely to be clinched this weekend as well.

:05:32. > :05:36.Red Bull need to leave here with a points advantage in order to be the

:05:37. > :05:45.constructors champions for the fourth year in a row. Fernando

:05:46. > :05:53.Alonso, with the new crash helmet. And down in the Ferrari garage is

:05:54. > :05:59.Jennie Gow. Just looking at Fernando Alonso, the recall, calm and collect

:06:00. > :06:02.it. He walked across from hospitality to his garage quite

:06:03. > :06:09.late. Sebastian Vettel was already in his car by that time. He only had

:06:10. > :06:16.six laps this morning, as opposed to 24 from Sebastian Vettel. He had

:06:17. > :06:20.gearbox issues this morning, a mechanical problem, is what they

:06:21. > :06:25.say. It took about one hour 45 minutes for them to fix. He is now

:06:26. > :06:30.sat in the car, ready to go out. He will be hoping for a better showing

:06:31. > :06:36.this afternoon. He certainly will. Fernando Alonso, only managing six

:06:37. > :06:41.laps this morning in Practice 1. We always have very stable weather

:06:42. > :06:47.conditions here in Delhi. And that is the case this morning, with a lot

:06:48. > :06:49.of laps taking place, 24 laps, by Sebastian Vettel, who set the

:06:50. > :06:53.fastest time, ahead of his team-mate, Mark Webber. Rosberg,

:06:54. > :06:59.looking promising for Mercedes, third fastest. And it was Grosjean,

:07:00. > :07:04.underlining the form that he has shown since the summer break, with

:07:05. > :07:09.force place, once again a threat to the cars up front. He was the one

:07:10. > :07:14.who took the fight to the Red Bulls last time out in Suzuka. Jenson

:07:15. > :07:20.Button was sixth fastest method of his team-mate, Sergio Perez. That is

:07:21. > :07:27.the reserve driver for Force India, who sat in for Paul di Resta this

:07:28. > :07:32.morning. So, the pit lane is open, the cars are out on the circuit. One

:07:33. > :07:39.hour and 27 minutes of track action to come. I am delighted to say that

:07:40. > :07:43.the director of motorsport for Pirelli has joined me now. One of

:07:44. > :07:47.the lovely things about being here in Delhi is that the commentary

:07:48. > :07:50.boxes are right in the middle of the paddock, so we get lots of guests

:07:51. > :07:54.dropping in. It is lovely to see you, and what are you expecting from

:07:55. > :07:59.this weekend? Well, based on last year, it was a one-stop race, so,

:08:00. > :08:06.coming here with the medium and soft tyre, we think the medium is good

:08:07. > :08:13.for a lot of laps, will be 35-40. The softer tyre, which is very much

:08:14. > :08:17.almost a super-soft tyre, in the parlance of previous years, should

:08:18. > :08:21.bring us in line with a two stop race. That is what we are aiming

:08:22. > :08:25.for. It was a good race last time out in Japan, from a strategy point

:08:26. > :08:29.of view, with Grosjean getting the jump at the start, meaning Red Bull

:08:30. > :08:33.had to change their strategy. Some fans who happens to have backed

:08:34. > :08:38.Webber were not very happy, but it can be clearly explained. It was

:08:39. > :08:41.very interesting to see how it panned out, just a shame in a way

:08:42. > :08:49.that Webber took so long to come through Grosjean at the end it

:08:50. > :08:53.showed the strength of Red Bull in this last part of the season, that

:08:54. > :08:56.they can do different strategies and end up really very close together

:08:57. > :09:03.between the two cars at the end. Roman Grosjean did a great drive as

:09:04. > :09:07.well. That is what you are after, really, you have come in for some

:09:08. > :09:11.flak in terms of bringing in tyres which degrade more quickly, to try

:09:12. > :09:16.and make strategy a part of the game here in Formula 1, and would you say

:09:17. > :09:19.that races like that in Japan are a showcase for what you are trying to

:09:20. > :09:27.achieve? Yes. People sometimes have short memories. You have to

:09:28. > :09:29.remember, we were asked to come up with two stop and three stop

:09:30. > :09:33.strategy is, and it would appear that is the way the sport wants to

:09:34. > :09:38.carry on going forward. One-stop is not part of the brief. When we have

:09:39. > :09:42.a one-stop race, like we did at Monza, we have quite a lot of

:09:43. > :09:46.complaints! I remember last year, you came with a relatively

:09:47. > :09:49.conservative choice, and I think the fourth fastest laps of the race were

:09:50. > :09:52.set in the closing laps of the Grand Prix, which showed that you had

:09:53. > :09:56.brought tyres which were conservative, because they had

:09:57. > :10:02.plenty of life left in them. Exactly, but we are limited, we have

:10:03. > :10:05.only got a certain number of components it is difficult to get it

:10:06. > :10:09.right every single time. If you look at Germany this year, and Hungary as

:10:10. > :10:12.well, which are historically extremely boring races, but both of

:10:13. > :10:17.those came together in the last few laps, so, from that point of view,

:10:18. > :10:23.we feel that we are delivering what we have been asked to do. One hour

:10:24. > :10:26.25 minutes remaining in this unit session, ahead of Sunday's Indian

:10:27. > :10:30.Grand Prix from the Buddh International Circuit in Delhi. We

:10:31. > :10:36.have got four or five cars out on circuit at moment. Raikkonen has

:10:37. > :10:45.gone fastest in the early exchanges. Three laps on the board for him. He

:10:46. > :10:50.is doing in the one point 28, Emma whereas the fastest lap from last

:10:51. > :10:55.year was in the 1.25 pro-. We are going to see drivers doing long runs

:10:56. > :11:00.on both types of tyre, and then about halfway through this session,

:11:01. > :11:03.we will see them take some fuel out, running relatively close to a

:11:04. > :11:07.qualifying fuel load, to simulate qualifying. How accurate a read do

:11:08. > :11:14.you think the teams get from that? It is a very good read. It also, you

:11:15. > :11:18.get a little bit of kit elegy. Sometimes people will put ten kilos

:11:19. > :11:22.extra in just to mix it up. That is something that we see only after the

:11:23. > :11:34.session, when we analyse the data later on. For viewers on BBC Two,

:11:35. > :11:38.you can see the heat build-up in the tyres of Raikkonen. It is a very

:11:39. > :11:42.interesting feature which we have got in the second half of the

:11:43. > :11:46.season. You are the supremely qualified person to talk us through

:11:47. > :11:49.it. Can see, under loading, under braking, going through the corners,

:11:50. > :11:56.you can see where the temperature is being created. It calls down rapidly

:11:57. > :12:00.of course on the straight. That shows you that it is not an easy

:12:01. > :12:04.life for the tyres! You can see that even when the temperature drops out,

:12:05. > :12:07.the inside shoulder still retains quite a lot of heat, does that

:12:08. > :12:13.indicate they are still leaning the tyres in at a camber angle? Yes, we

:12:14. > :12:17.have 3.5 degrees on the front, 2.5 degrees limitation on the rear. That

:12:18. > :12:20.is where you are seeing the work it is always on the shoulder of the

:12:21. > :12:29.tyre, which is reflected in the where profiles. This is only year

:12:30. > :12:33.three of this circuit, and they do not exactly have bad weather here in

:12:34. > :12:37.India, so it is not like the winters will be taking anything out of the

:12:38. > :12:41.track, but what are you seeing in terms of how this track is evolving?

:12:42. > :12:44.It is interesting. We were talking about it because we have got a

:12:45. > :12:52.couple of new tracks next season. In terms of the surface, places like

:12:53. > :12:55.USA, here, Korea, Abu Dhabi, have quite smooth track surfaces,

:12:56. > :12:59.compared to some of the older tracks, like Malaysia, which is the

:13:00. > :13:01.extreme example. In terms of the layout, it will go on

:13:02. > :13:04.extreme example. In terms of the layout, it will go about some of the

:13:05. > :13:07.tracks not being exciting, but this is an interesting layout from a

:13:08. > :13:15.track point of view. So, to remind ourselves, next year, Sochi in

:13:16. > :13:19.Japan, Russia, being built around the Winter Olympics course. It looks

:13:20. > :13:23.like a very quick circuit. On the layout, yes, although there is

:13:24. > :13:26.nothing there yet to measure! We would ordinarily go and take

:13:27. > :13:30.measurements before we get there, and we are waiting to be able to get

:13:31. > :13:36.out there as soon as the surface is laid to verify what it is like.

:13:37. > :13:39.Sometimes in the first years, you do get a little bit of leaching out of

:13:40. > :13:42.the chemicals on the surface, so the first year can be a little bit

:13:43. > :13:47.different from subsequent years. But overall we are anticipating surface

:13:48. > :13:48.is very similar to these new tracks. We have got the

:13:49. > :13:49.refurbishment of is very similar to these new

:13:50. > :13:59.tracks. We have got an old circuit in Austria, we have got potentially

:14:00. > :14:03.a race around the harbour on the waterside in New York, in New

:14:04. > :14:07.Jersey. Kimi Raikkonen just spinning there at the hairpin. Has he kept

:14:08. > :14:20.the engine running Cassius coming he has. He just got his left rear tyre

:14:21. > :14:26.up on the gravel trap. Grosjean fastest, and a flat spot on the left

:14:27. > :14:30.front tyre. Yes, that is a pretty big flat spot. I would guess that he

:14:31. > :14:34.has got a vibration, so he will be looking to come in and change that.

:14:35. > :14:44.So, Grosjean fastest, Hamilton second at the moment. Vettel has

:14:45. > :14:47.gone fastest, he set the fastest time here last year in every single

:14:48. > :14:52.practice section, and qualifying, and the race. He has a way around

:14:53. > :14:56.here, although you could say that around a lot of places. Do you see

:14:57. > :15:01.anybody getting close to him? It is going to be very tough. If we see

:15:02. > :15:06.the way they have evolved the car since the August closure, if you

:15:07. > :15:11.like, they have really done a tremendous job, Red Bull, and they

:15:12. > :15:13.have been extremely dominant. You can imagine them really finishing

:15:14. > :15:21.the season in the same vein double vets get down to the pits.

:15:22. > :15:27.Spoke to one of the members of the team between the first practise and

:15:28. > :15:30.this practise. Kimi is not happy with the set-up of his car this

:15:31. > :15:34.morning. I think they went the wrong with the balance. They are going to

:15:35. > :15:38.have another look at this this afternoon. Just watching him spin

:15:39. > :15:42.out, maybe they have not done enough. I am just waiting for the

:15:43. > :15:45.car to come back in. Not sign of it just yet.

:15:46. > :15:51.Gary, you have got a view of the spin we saw for Kimi Raikkonen? It

:15:52. > :15:54.is one of those situations where you know, you have to keep going for a

:15:55. > :16:03.while on the tyres because these things can happen. A lot of these

:16:04. > :16:08.corners, you go over the brow of the hill. You can't see the apex of the

:16:09. > :16:13.corner until you are on the corner. It does tempt you to go quick. The

:16:14. > :16:19.circuit is very, very open. There is no walls or anything close to the

:16:20. > :16:23.track surface. It is difficult to get a reference until you go over

:16:24. > :16:27.the top of the hills. A lot of these corners suck you in. You have got

:16:28. > :16:33.tracks that have crash barriers close to the track and you are off

:16:34. > :16:40.the pace a little bit. But here we see more run off areas. Rosberg

:16:41. > :16:47.going wide at turn 16. That's because it is so open. You push the

:16:48. > :16:50.car to the maximum limit because the track doesn't give you many

:16:51. > :16:54.references. You see lots and lots of mistakes. Rosberg wouldn't get away

:16:55. > :17:01.with that in qualifying. He would get penalised for that. Well, Gary,

:17:02. > :17:05.it is a 3.18 mile circuit and 16 turns. It is only in its third year.

:17:06. > :17:11.It is a difficult circuit to set a car up for, as well, isn't it? It is

:17:12. > :17:15.getting the balance right. It asks a lot of different questions of the

:17:16. > :17:21.car. It does, yeah. I have just seen a replay of Rosberg missing the apex

:17:22. > :17:27.and running off wide. Yeah, it is very difficult. Straight line speed

:17:28. > :17:33.is very important. The long corners 10 and 11 are important. A

:17:34. > :17:43.compromise in set-up and not easy to achieve.

:17:44. > :17:48.Turn five, six and seven, an interesting area of the circuit as

:17:49. > :17:58.vetful improves -- Vettel improves. Grosjean is second fastest. It is

:17:59. > :18:04.Hamilton third, Perez fourth, Raikkonen fifth, Ricciardo going

:18:05. > :18:07.strongly in the Torro Rosso. Felipe Massa who in the last couple of

:18:08. > :18:13.years has been stronger in qualifying in the closing stages of

:18:14. > :18:17.the championship seasons. Last year, in Austin he had to be moved out of

:18:18. > :18:23.the way with a phantom gearbox issue so Alonso could start on the clean

:18:24. > :18:28.side of the track and get a better get away. Massa is eighth and Button

:18:29. > :18:34.is ninth and Hulkenberg is down in tenth place. Mark Webber now pops up

:18:35. > :18:38.into second place. On again under lining the form Red Bull have shown.

:18:39. > :18:42.Here is Vettel's radio. TEAM RADIO: We think we can fix

:18:43. > :18:46.KERS, but if you can learn something, have another go. We have

:18:47. > :18:53.got time. Vettel has another KERS issue, we

:18:54. > :19:02.think. So well, we will keep an eye on that. The team principal and

:19:03. > :19:06.shareholder at Sauber is with Jenny. A lot of people are saying this

:19:07. > :19:10.could be the last time we come here. It is not on the calendar for next

:19:11. > :19:17.year. What are your feelings about that? It is sad. It is a special

:19:18. > :19:20.Grand Prix. We have seen over the last years that we are having

:19:21. > :19:28.increasingly higher number of fans here. So it will be sad if it is not

:19:29. > :19:33.on. At the moment, it does look scarce. There is not many people

:19:34. > :19:37.here. Do you think Formula One could compete with cricket? No. I don't

:19:38. > :19:40.think we should try that. We have to establish ourselves here. We have to

:19:41. > :19:45.find our niche somewhere and if we had the time, I am sure we could do

:19:46. > :19:48.that. It is all about time and giving the Grand Prix time to bed in

:19:49. > :19:53.and it doesn't look like that is happening. How much disappoint pt is

:19:54. > :20:02.there within the paddock? Well, such for the race people, we have been

:20:03. > :20:07.confronted with certain obstacles. It is not only the administration,

:20:08. > :20:10.but it is all the other discussions going on about tax issues and things

:20:11. > :20:16.and it doesn't have anything to do with us as a sport and what gets to

:20:17. > :20:23.some people if you are being questioned as a sport. There are a

:20:24. > :20:27.mixed feelings. How is this weekend looking for both your guys in India?

:20:28. > :20:32.The track is similar to Korea which was not a bad race for us. So we

:20:33. > :20:36.have come here with high expectations and hopes. We know we

:20:37. > :20:41.have to go on the way we have been. No mistakes. And make sure we get

:20:42. > :20:45.everything right and we are there to grab the points. We talked about the

:20:46. > :20:52.constructors championship being tied up by Red Bull, but the fight for

:20:53. > :20:57.you is so important. How confident are you that you can take the prized

:20:58. > :21:02.spot from them? We were just five points away from P5 and we didn't

:21:03. > :21:07.manage to get our act together and score the five points and we had so

:21:08. > :21:13.many races. I'm cautious and we have to try.

:21:14. > :21:19.Talk to me about Nico Rosberg -- Hulkenberg. There are lots of

:21:20. > :21:21.rumours about a move back to Force India. What's your understanding of

:21:22. > :21:25.the situation? Well, I have an understanding which I can't tell you

:21:26. > :21:29.right now. We know other people are interested in him. He is a very good

:21:30. > :21:34.driver. That's why we took him on boardment of we have options and we

:21:35. > :21:42.will announce it in due course. I love the way you keep us holding on.

:21:43. > :21:46.I suppose the same goes for Gutierrez and his future with you as

:21:47. > :21:49.well? Yes. It was worth a try, Jenny. Hulkenberg is very much in

:21:50. > :21:53.demand despite being one of the heaviest drivers in Formula One

:21:54. > :22:01.which is an issue which we have been hearing, but Gary Anderson would

:22:02. > :22:12.dispute that. Sauber are 17 points behind Force India. It has been a

:22:13. > :22:25.strong run for the he Sauber team. They keep racking the points up. We

:22:26. > :22:29.were hearing from Manisha, it is a shame to go to a venue and the

:22:30. > :22:33.problems like the administration and the tax issues. This race appeared

:22:34. > :22:39.to be under threat this weekend with a petition to get the race cancelled

:22:40. > :22:43.due tonne an issue of payment of tax and the classification of Formula

:22:44. > :22:48.One where it is a sport and entertainment. The news, as I came

:22:49. > :22:53.back to the commentary box just after talking to one of the

:22:54. > :22:57.officials, the Indian justice system is going to hear this case after the

:22:58. > :23:02.Grand Prix. There is no threat to the Grand Prix. . I am not sure if

:23:03. > :23:10.there was. It is one of those that seems to spring up on the he eve of

:23:11. > :23:13.a big event? They seem to get resolved every year which is

:23:14. > :23:16.positive, but it does make it a little bit more difficult from the

:23:17. > :23:20.administration point of view. It is disappointing that you go to

:23:21. > :23:26.new venues and not get a chance to build the sport in the areas, isn't

:23:27. > :23:33.it? India, with an Indian team and with a sports mad country and a fast

:23:34. > :23:36.growing rising middle-class and a young middle-class, all the points

:23:37. > :23:43.that Formula One looks for around the world, it ought to work here?

:23:44. > :23:47.When you compare it to cricket, it is new. It is new and you need time

:23:48. > :23:50.to build that and it doesn't happen overnight, not just you turn up that

:23:51. > :23:54.suddenly everyone will arrive and more so when you have stand alone

:23:55. > :23:59.circuits. You have the exception of maybe somewhere like Austin, but

:24:00. > :24:05.stre circuits tends to force people to - you ruin their weekend. They

:24:06. > :24:13.can't move anywhere because you have turned up like Singapore and when

:24:14. > :24:16.you do street circuits in new locations you get the interest

:24:17. > :24:21.there. Rosberg is saying more under steer in the car and he doesn't

:24:22. > :24:32.understand why. There is an hour and ten minutes on the clock. Mercedes

:24:33. > :24:35.are chasing after Red Bull. At the moment, Rosberg is top of the time

:24:36. > :24:46.sheets. Sebastian Vettel is third and it is Perez, Grosjean mill,

:24:47. > :24:51.Hamilton. It would appear to me from the outside that Grosjean has got

:24:52. > :24:55.his act together within the Lotus team since the summer break in

:24:56. > :24:58.particular. He has got his head together in terms of his

:24:59. > :25:03.performances, but in qualifying, he seems to have an edge over Kimi

:25:04. > :25:10.Raikkonen. How much of that is his own personal development and the

:25:11. > :25:17.different spec of tyres? Well, Romain Grosjean has always been

:25:18. > :25:23.quick. He was our first tester. We did a season at GP 2. Everyone

:25:24. > :25:28.throughout the paddock have said that they knew him to be a quick

:25:29. > :25:36.driver. It was maybe the driving skills. He has got his act together

:25:37. > :25:39.and showed it is not an act in the -- flash in the pan. It is great for

:25:40. > :25:44.him and it is great for the sport. Having a French driver present in a

:25:45. > :25:50.top team is fantastic and he is maturing nicely which I am sure is

:25:51. > :25:55.what Eric saw when he brought him on when some people were saying he is

:25:56. > :26:00.he was -- he was taking a a risk. You brought a different construction

:26:01. > :26:04.of tyre from that point on wards. Is it stiffer in the side walls or less

:26:05. > :26:07.stiff? Is there a reason why he is able to get more out of the tyre on

:26:08. > :26:18.Saturdays particularly in qualifying? No, I wouldn't put it

:26:19. > :26:23.down to that. There is a difference in vertical stiffness for sure, but

:26:24. > :26:27.that would make enough of a difference to his qualifying. I

:26:28. > :26:32.would love to say, yes, but it is probably not true! It is interesting

:26:33. > :26:35.though. Raikkonen is not as strong in qualifying as he was perhaps in

:26:36. > :26:42.the first part of the season. He is coming through in the races, but he

:26:43. > :26:49.is giving himself more work to do. The top five, Rosberg on top then.

:26:50. > :27:00.Let's check-in with Gary Anderson at Mercedes. I am down here with Nico

:27:01. > :27:04.Rosberg's car. He was complaining about having more under steer. When

:27:05. > :27:08.the track rubbers in a bit and when the grip level rises, that leads to

:27:09. > :27:14.under steer because the rear tyres grip that more. When you put on the

:27:15. > :27:18.softer tyre, you have under steer. They will be doing a set-up change

:27:19. > :27:21.at the same time as putting the tyres on to make sure they

:27:22. > :27:25.compensate for that because the tyres will last one good, hard lap.

:27:26. > :27:29.After that, you have thrown everything away and you are going to

:27:30. > :27:36.do a good lap time, you need to get it out of the tyres on the first

:27:37. > :27:41.lap. Well, it is the yellow side walled tyres that are are on the

:27:42. > :27:46.car. Paul, do you agree with Gary there? Yes, the extra challenge will

:27:47. > :27:50.be a bit of graining on the softer tyres and that's something we will

:27:51. > :27:54.only evaluate now. It is smooth and we will want to see if it does get

:27:55. > :27:59.up to temperature quick enough to give that quick lap. If they have

:28:00. > :28:03.got understeer, it will get worse now and that will be the challenge.

:28:04. > :28:08.One of the things that Gary observed throughout the season is that ebb

:28:09. > :28:16.Sebastian Vettel seems to have a way of using the qualifying tyre. He

:28:17. > :28:19.makes sure he has got plenty left at the end. The team radio here.

:28:20. > :28:35.Jao TEAM RADIO: Yesterday, I was

:28:36. > :28:40.watching quali. They do more than one lap on these tyres.

:28:41. > :28:45.It sounds like you are not expecting that this year? It is a two stop

:28:46. > :28:51.race and the softer tyre will ensure we get to that, but you know, teams

:28:52. > :28:58.have been working hard on the rear tyre management. Red Bull in

:28:59. > :29:02.particular. We see that from the data. At the start of the year, they

:29:03. > :29:04.maybe were overheating and that's been reduced in the last part of

:29:05. > :29:08.this season. There was all sorts of clever tricks

:29:09. > :29:13.going on in order to do that. If you get a chance, look online at the

:29:14. > :29:19.inside of the wheels. The Red Bull and the Mercedes have been doing a

:29:20. > :29:24.lot of work. Using the heat in the rear tyres or dispersing the heat

:29:25. > :29:28.that comes off the brakes and inside the wheels. Very, very clever stuff

:29:29. > :29:33.going on. It is real cutting edge science in order to manage the

:29:34. > :29:41.thermal management of the tyres. It is critical in this Pirelli era. The

:29:42. > :29:46.Pirelli motorsport director is with me. There is just over an hour to go

:29:47. > :29:51.in this 90 minutes free practise session. I have yet to see anyone

:29:52. > :29:58.going out on the softer of the two tyre compounds. Remember, you can

:29:59. > :30:03.get in touch with us using the hashtag F 1 on twitter. One for Paul

:30:04. > :30:06.here, will there be any changes to the tyres next year given that we

:30:07. > :30:09.have the introduction of new technology on the cards? I know the

:30:10. > :30:19.answer is yes. It has been a headache for you, hasn't? A big

:30:20. > :30:22.challenge. You get a lot of talk. Management of the rear tyre

:30:23. > :30:26.overheating is going to be vital. So you just mentioned Red Bull and

:30:27. > :30:29.Mercedes, probably a lot of work they are doing already and it will

:30:30. > :30:32.give them some good information for next year. So we have to become a

:30:33. > :30:36.little bit more conservative. There is no doubt about that. But

:30:37. > :30:43.indications are that we are still aiming for a two to three stop race.

:30:44. > :30:45.The teams have had meetings and the indications, we will try to make

:30:46. > :30:47.sure there is no one stop racing. Thank you.

:30:48. > :31:14.. We have got another question here -

:31:15. > :31:18.with the Indian Grand Prix being a compromise of speed and cornering,

:31:19. > :31:24.Gary Anderson, two teams set up their cars to favour one aspect, or

:31:25. > :31:28.both equally? It is difficult. Straight-line speed means running

:31:29. > :31:32.lower wing levels, but in qualifying, to be honest, the more

:31:33. > :31:34.downforce you can run, faster lap time you can do. So, you are in the

:31:35. > :31:36.middle of that. downforce you can run, faster lap

:31:37. > :31:40.time you can do. So, you You will try to make sure you are running

:31:41. > :31:49.enough downforce so as not to destroy the towers. -- tyres. You

:31:50. > :31:54.would maybe try to make sure the balance of the car through turn 12

:31:55. > :31:57.is very good. As Paul Hembery was saying, when you get graining on the

:31:58. > :32:03.front tyres, you get more and more understeer, and it tears the top of

:32:04. > :32:08.the tyres away. Minimising that graining is vitally important. As

:32:09. > :32:20.far as qualifying is concerned, on one lap, it does not really matter.

:32:21. > :32:30.Currently Raikkonen with the fastest time. We will look at how much he

:32:31. > :32:40.improves by. You are anticipating about eight tenths, with the softer

:32:41. > :32:44.tyre? Eight tenths to one second, yes. Kimi Raikkonen has backed right

:32:45. > :32:47.off now. That was quite a moment, the front of the car simply did not

:32:48. > :32:55.want to go where he wanted it to, through that very difficult turn 10

:32:56. > :33:00.at the top of the hill. It sounds like understeer came into play

:33:01. > :33:08.again, with the change of tyre. As you say, it was not going where he

:33:09. > :33:17.wanted it to! No, the Lotus got up on the brightly coloured paint, and

:33:18. > :33:22.he lost his grip. Meanwhile, Grosjean has been pushing pretty

:33:23. > :33:26.hard. He has had to back out of a lap as well. Vettel is also on the

:33:27. > :33:32.softer tyre, doing a convocation simulation. Is the fastest of

:33:33. > :33:39.anybody so far in the first sector. Watch out for Sebastian Vettel. He

:33:40. > :33:44.runs really wide, but gathers it all up nicely on the exit of that

:33:45. > :33:48.corner, and in fact, all four wheels, completely off the road

:33:49. > :34:02.there for Sebastian Vettel. He would get into trouble if you did that in

:34:03. > :34:14.qualifying. Yes, I guess so! He has done a lap of 1.3 seconds faster, on

:34:15. > :34:19.the softer tyre. Over to Jennie Gow. We are just hearing some positive

:34:20. > :34:26.news from Marussia, about your future in the sport? We are very

:34:27. > :34:34.happy to confirm that we have signed an agreement with the commercial

:34:35. > :34:40.rights holder to continue in the same way that the other teams are

:34:41. > :34:45.continuing in Formula 1. It is something we are really happy to

:34:46. > :34:50.have been able to get concluded. I know I spoke to you earlier in the

:34:51. > :34:56.season, and you were not quite sure what was going to happen. No, it has

:34:57. > :35:00.taken a long time, but the thing is, we have got the deal done, it is

:35:01. > :35:10.signed, and we can look forward to racing for many years to come. What

:35:11. > :35:14.change will that make within the Marussia team? To be honest, it is

:35:15. > :35:22.more about what we will do next year. That agreement with the

:35:23. > :35:30.commercial rights holder has now been put to bed, so I think it will

:35:31. > :35:36.be more about people how people perceive as externally, than

:35:37. > :35:39.anything else. Thank you very much. When he talks about that, he is

:35:40. > :35:43.talking about sponsors as much is about fans. Because sponsors would

:35:44. > :35:47.not want to get involved with the team if they are not sure whether

:35:48. > :35:50.the team will survive, because of not having a commercial arrangement.

:35:51. > :35:55.They were the odd one out for a very long time, the 11th team, although

:35:56. > :36:00.at the moment they are on target to finish 10th, and Caterham are the

:36:01. > :36:06.11th team, as things stand. But that is good news for Formula 1, and for

:36:07. > :36:11.Marussia, a well-run team, as I found when I went on the pit wall on

:36:12. > :36:15.Saturday morning practice in Canada. Absolutely. They are a very

:36:16. > :36:19.hard-working team, they do not have the resources of the top teams, but

:36:20. > :36:22.they have a plan and they are working to it. It is good for

:36:23. > :36:27.Formula 1 that they will now be able to move forward and probably attract

:36:28. > :36:31.the sponsors which might have been hindered. I know you have to rush

:36:32. > :36:34.off because you have got a busy afternoon in front of you, but just

:36:35. > :36:46.some final thoughts, as we look at Mark Webber setting off, we saw a

:36:47. > :36:54.big improvement from Vettel there? Yes, he was maybe taking an

:36:55. > :36:58.exaggerated way around the circuit, but yes, they are looking strong. No

:36:59. > :37:03.surprises there. But also, we are going to get will be the Mercedes

:37:04. > :37:07.and the Lotus pushing them as hard as they can. Thank you very much for

:37:08. > :37:10.taking the time to come and visit us in the commentary box, Paul, good

:37:11. > :37:24.luck for the weekend and for the rest of this season.

:37:25. > :37:30.RADIO: Copy that, do you think it is worth to adjust the front wing?

:37:31. > :37:34.JAMES ALLEN: At sounds like one for Gary Anderson to comment on, Nicky

:37:35. > :37:37.Hulkenberg commenting on how he might be able to get rid of this

:37:38. > :37:46.understeer. GARY ANDERSON: Yes, as the track

:37:47. > :37:50.grip comes up, quite a few of the cars are probably speaking about

:37:51. > :37:53.that turn 10, where we saw Timmy going wide.

:37:54. > :37:55.cars are probably speaking about that turn 10, where we saw The rest

:37:56. > :38:01.of these corners, with a quick change of direction, they are not

:38:02. > :38:05.too bad. It is those long corners, and for a driver, he is just sitting

:38:06. > :38:09.in the middle of the corner, waiting to get the throttle back on again.

:38:10. > :38:13.If he is putting more and more steering lock on it, then that is

:38:14. > :38:17.the thing he is going to complain about, so I think we will hear a lot

:38:18. > :38:21.of that before the end of Sunday afternoon. Mark Webber goes second

:38:22. > :38:25.fastest, using the softer compound tyre, just under three tenths of a

:38:26. > :38:30.second slower than Sebastian Vettel. So, the two Red Bulls at the top of

:38:31. > :38:36.the time sheet, but Nico Rosberg is out there on the soft tyres at the

:38:37. > :38:42.moment, as well as Raikkonen. Sebastian Grosjean has yet to make

:38:43. > :38:48.the switch. He will take a big step forward ahead of Raikkonen I think

:38:49. > :38:53.when he does move to that tyre. Nico Rosberg is on his out lap, beginning

:38:54. > :38:57.his hot lap. We will keep an eye out for him, see what improvement he

:38:58. > :39:03.makes. Interesting to see Vettel caning over a second by moving from

:39:04. > :39:06.the medium tyre to the softer tyre, substantially more than Paul Hembery

:39:07. > :39:10.from Pirelli was predicting, and a lot of that was to do with the fact

:39:11. > :39:14.that he quite literally went completely off the road, and he

:39:15. > :39:19.would not be able to do that, for sure, and I am sure the drivers will

:39:20. > :39:32.be discussing that this evening in the drivers' meeting.

:39:33. > :39:39.In the past, we have seen Mercedes struggling to match the Red Bull on

:39:40. > :39:43.the Friday. They tend to get faster as we move towards Sunday, certainly

:39:44. > :39:45.that has been the case this season so far. Red Bull would seem to be

:39:46. > :40:08.the car in the ascendancy so far. Rosberg attacking hard, going right

:40:09. > :40:22.off the road as well, and he has now gone third fastest.

:40:23. > :40:31.Hulkenberg has gone wide at Romeo-11, which is catching a lot of

:40:32. > :40:35.people out today. Over to Jennie Gow. We have got another Brit who is

:40:36. > :40:39.starting in a support race this weekend. Laura, the only British

:40:40. > :40:44.woman to begin beating this weekend, and it is a bit of a surprise for

:40:45. > :40:48.you, isn't it? Yes, I only found out two weeks ago that I was doing the

:40:49. > :40:54.race. It is a great atmosphere here so I am so psyched up to do it. I

:40:55. > :40:57.heard a little birdie saying that you were just happy to be on the

:40:58. > :41:03.same circuit as all of the Formula 1 drivers. Yes, they are the people

:41:04. > :41:06.you look up to as a driver. You started karting I think when you

:41:07. > :41:17.were 11, but your history in our team goes all the way back to your

:41:18. > :41:23.grandfather and your father, and you have been involved in developing

:41:24. > :41:29.racing seats, to protect people's lumbar spines as well. Yes, I

:41:30. > :41:35.progressed through to single-seaters, seeing my friends

:41:36. > :41:39.like Charles Pic and Jules Bianchi, so I had to do it as well, see if I

:41:40. > :41:42.could give them a run for their money. Explain what it is like as a

:41:43. > :41:48.young British female trying to develop through this game. It is

:41:49. > :41:53.really difficult, because obviously, there are sexist people in this

:41:54. > :41:58.sport. So, you have two show your absolute best all of the time.

:41:59. > :42:01.Funding wise, it is quite difficult, I know another young

:42:02. > :42:07.British female, Alice Powell, was here last year, and she could not

:42:08. > :42:11.find a place at the higher levels, so what hopes have you got? It is

:42:12. > :42:15.really difficult, it is catching the right person at the right moment.

:42:16. > :42:20.You have to present yourself well and make sure you do the job on the

:42:21. > :42:29.day. Do you find that your dad having been in racing helps? In

:42:30. > :42:35.karting, yes, in cars, he is not so good. But yes, he knows a lot of

:42:36. > :42:40.people. So, what is the next step for you, do you try to go back to

:42:41. > :42:46.the UK to compete next year? I hope not. I hope to do either Europe or

:42:47. > :42:49.some world racing. I just love the atmosphere and the heat, it is

:42:50. > :42:55.brilliant. Do you seriously think that in the future, you could

:42:56. > :43:04.challenge to be on this grid in F1? I think that soon a girl will, and I

:43:05. > :43:08.just hope I can be that girl. Laura till it, trying to make her

:43:09. > :43:13.way as a young female racing driver. Of course, you have got Susie Wolff,

:43:14. > :43:22.a development driver for the Williams team, a former shareholder

:43:23. > :43:26.of Williams. But I completely agree, not enough women coming through the

:43:27. > :43:29.system, it would be absolutely fantastic to get a competitive

:43:30. > :43:32.female Formula 1 driver, and hopefully it will not be too long

:43:33. > :43:38.before we see that. We have got 51 minutes of this Practice 2 session,

:43:39. > :43:44.ahead of Sunday's Indian Grand Prix. We are about 15-20 minutes outside

:43:45. > :43:51.of Delhi, if there is no traffic, anyway. It is a 3.18 mile circuit,

:43:52. > :43:54.and they really challenging one, as the drivers have been finding. A lot

:43:55. > :43:59.of them have been struggling with understeer. Kimi Raikkonen is having

:44:00. > :44:05.a bit of a job getting his Lotus to go around turn 10 and 11 as he wants

:44:06. > :44:18.it to. Some of them have been going

:44:19. > :44:21.completely off the track, which will be a talking point with the racing

:44:22. > :44:27.director, Charlie biting, to discuss with the drivers. The current state

:44:28. > :44:48.of play is... Grosjean was challenging on the

:44:49. > :44:52.medium compound tyre earlier on, but has fallen away a bit on the soft.

:44:53. > :44:57.We saw Hamilton out on circuit, and he came into the pits, and

:44:58. > :45:04.presumably is fitting a set of soft tyres, because he has not yet gone

:45:05. > :45:08.out on the softer compound. Alonso also yet to go out on his qualifying

:45:09. > :45:14.simulation run. He is currently in 10th place. He had problems this

:45:15. > :45:19.morning with a gearbox problem. Alonso, chasing it a bit this

:45:20. > :45:22.weekend, and relying on the information he gets from Felipe

:45:23. > :45:33.Massa, who managed to do 21 laps this morning.

:45:34. > :45:42.Maldonado is 11th. Where is he going next radio year -- next year? There

:45:43. > :45:50.is discussions of whether he will take his Venezuelan oil money to a

:45:51. > :45:57.different team. The Williams Team has been visiting Venezuela to make

:45:58. > :46:02.sure everything is good. Button down in 12th place at the moment. Felipe

:46:03. > :46:07.Massa's brother is in the garage. Remember those scenes with him and

:46:08. > :46:15.his father when they thought they had won the 2012 World Championship.

:46:16. > :46:19.The whole family bouncing up and down by telling them that Lewis

:46:20. > :46:25.Hamilton was going to finish fifth and win the world championship. I

:46:26. > :46:30.don't think they ever recovered from the disappointment Ricciardo 15th.

:46:31. > :46:35.He is yet to use the soft compound tyre. Sutil is 14th. There are

:46:36. > :46:41.question marks over his future as Force India work out what their best

:46:42. > :46:47.options are for next year. Valtteri Bottas has had real high points this

:46:48. > :46:52.year. Third place on the grid in Canada. 15th at the moment and yet

:46:53. > :47:00.to use the softer compound tyres. TEAM RADIO: How is that front tyre,

:47:01. > :47:06.Nico? It is OK. Hulkenberg being asked about the

:47:07. > :47:13.tyres there. He says just about OK. He has the fourth fastest time at

:47:14. > :47:17.the moment. He gave the tyres a breather and did another couple of

:47:18. > :47:22.laps. Red Bull are one and two as they were on the grid here the last

:47:23. > :47:28.couple of years and Gary, what are you seeing in the garage? I am

:47:29. > :47:33.watching ebb is seb's war -- I'm watching Sebastian Vettel's car. And

:47:34. > :47:40.they have just been doing a set-up change on the back of the car. The

:47:41. > :47:50.rear entry roll bar, it is the link that stops the back of the car from

:47:51. > :47:56.rolling. If you go softer. I imagine when we saw Sebastian Vettel run off

:47:57. > :48:01.the circuit a couple of times it was because of understeer. It will hurt

:48:02. > :48:07.the rear tyre more. If they are going for a long run, now is the

:48:08. > :48:13.time to experiment with that. There is work going on in the rear wing

:48:14. > :48:18.assemblies. They will be checking the differential. He has got some

:48:19. > :48:21.problem at the back of the car as well. But they look happy enough

:48:22. > :48:25.with it and they should be back out on the track soon.

:48:26. > :48:29.Thank you very much, Gary. We have over three-quarters of an hour

:48:30. > :48:34.remaining in the second free practise session ahead of Sunday's

:48:35. > :48:39.Indian Grand Prix. In our paddock centre commentary position we have

:48:40. > :48:43.been joined by Force India's reserve driver, James Calado, who was out on

:48:44. > :48:48.circuit this morning in free practise one and he did 22 laps in

:48:49. > :48:54.Paul di Resta's car. Can how did you enjoy that this morning, James? Paul

:48:55. > :48:59.was sick yesterday afternoon so I found out... Did you take him out

:49:00. > :49:05.for a curry the night before? I dropped ice cubes in his drink! I'm

:49:06. > :49:11.joking! It was better for him to miss the session. A good session.

:49:12. > :49:15.Yeah, 22 laps and getting up to speed. I had a little spin at one

:49:16. > :49:22.point which was a shame because it was a good chunk of, it was a better

:49:23. > :49:26.lap and it was unfortunate to the to be able to show what I could do this

:49:27. > :49:32.there. We did everything we needed to do and I went through the

:49:33. > :49:38.programme. I gave good feedback. You have not been able to try the softer

:49:39. > :49:43.tyre which everybody is doing. We are hearing a lot of drivers

:49:44. > :49:47.complaining about understeer. The car not wanting to turn in. We have

:49:48. > :49:52.seen Kimi Raikkonen having a handful of a moment up at turn ten. What is

:49:53. > :49:56.it about this place from the driver's point of view? It is a

:49:57. > :50:02.fantastic track, but it involves high-speed, fast flowing corners

:50:03. > :50:11.which can easily generate undertier in these -- understeer in these

:50:12. > :50:15.cars. When you go into on to a softer compound, more understeer is

:50:16. > :50:19.produced. This morning, that was the main issue with other teams

:50:20. > :50:24.including ourselves, it was trying to get the front tyres to turn in

:50:25. > :50:28.and feel a good bite from the car which was something we were lacking.

:50:29. > :50:34.The guys are working hard to solve these iruse. I am -- issues. I am

:50:35. > :50:41.sure by P 3, it will be no problem. What sort of things do you go for?

:50:42. > :50:46.Put more front wing on? Add more front wing or reduce rear wing.

:50:47. > :50:50.There is so much you can do. When you change something, it can improve

:50:51. > :50:53.that bit, but you always lose an advantage somewhere else. So it is a

:50:54. > :50:56.fine line between making the correct decision.

:50:57. > :51:03.It always has a knock on effect, right? Yes. These cars are so much

:51:04. > :51:09.more complex? They are fantastic to drive, so quick. But like I said,

:51:10. > :51:11.very sensitive to change. Very sensitive to everything you can do

:51:12. > :51:16.on them. Great stuff really. Fernando Alonso is on a lap at the

:51:17. > :51:22.moment. His first sector just coming through to cut the tape now. A

:51:23. > :51:30.tricky little section this, five, six and seven. 130mph on the way in

:51:31. > :51:35.and 100mph and out towards the fast kink of eight and nine. Very

:51:36. > :51:42.difficult corner for a lot of the cars through 11. He let's the car

:51:43. > :51:48.run out. 170mph then and 150mph on the apex there. Now building up to

:51:49. > :51:56.165mph and turns it into turn 15 and he will cross the line shortly to

:51:57. > :52:01.give us an indication of how his lap is going. Turn 16 is where Vettel

:52:02. > :52:09.and Rosberg were well outside the white lines and he goes fourth

:52:10. > :52:21.fastest. The Ferrari has been struggling all

:52:22. > :52:25.year. He is just in front of Nico Rosberg. Just from a driver's point

:52:26. > :52:30.of view, we were talking about going completely beyond the white lines,

:52:31. > :52:36.outside the confines of the circuit. Over the last few years this has

:52:37. > :52:40.been a hot talking point in the drivers' briefings. The rule is you

:52:41. > :52:43.are not allowed to do it. We have seen Sebastian Vettel doing it it

:52:44. > :52:48.and Rosberg did it. When the drivers talk about it, what's the line you

:52:49. > :52:54.take? The rule is simple. You don't go over the white line and gain an

:52:55. > :52:59.advantage and if done so, your lap will be delete or you will receive a

:53:00. > :53:03.penalty. In free practise, it is not so much an issue. The drivers are

:53:04. > :53:08.finding the limit and getting to grips with the car and things. There

:53:09. > :53:13.maybe a little thing from the team or a little warning from Charlie to

:53:14. > :53:18.say keep within the limits, but for qualifying you won't see this, but

:53:19. > :53:24.if you do, you will see penalties given.

:53:25. > :53:34.Charlie Whiting formally a chief mechanic with the team when he was

:53:35. > :53:39.owned by Bernie Ecclestone. I was with them in the summer and they

:53:40. > :53:46.added up between them they have done something like 2,000 Grand Prix or

:53:47. > :53:52.something ridiculous. In total. It is all the Grand Prix that happened

:53:53. > :53:58.since the late 1960s which is most of the Grand Prix that ever

:53:59. > :54:06.happened. Jean-Eric Vergne out on circuit in the Torro Rosso. He knows

:54:07. > :54:14.his team-mate for next year. Lots of action going with Torro Rosso. A

:54:15. > :54:18.lively looking car. He is up in the long spoon-like hairpin and he is

:54:19. > :54:25.dancing a dance with that car? He is doing the tango! He made a few

:54:26. > :54:31.mistakes there. He is just cooling the tyres down. Lively. A bit too

:54:32. > :54:35.much temp in the rear tyres. You find the big benefit with the

:54:36. > :54:40.Pirellis doing a cool down lap and going again, you are able to squeeze

:54:41. > :54:46.more extra laps than if you pushed every single lap. They get too hot?

:54:47. > :54:52.Yes, they get too hot and when that's the case, they degrade

:54:53. > :54:56.quicker. Like I said, he is just doing a cool down lap.

:54:57. > :55:01.You can't do that in a race, can you? No.

:55:02. > :55:04.Is that why you have to be more measured lap after lap? If you were

:55:05. > :55:10.just to push every single lap you would have to pit five or six laps

:55:11. > :55:15.earlier. It is a matter of the teams deciding good ta are get time and

:55:16. > :55:18.how the driver feels pushing the car.

:55:19. > :55:27.James Calado joining us here on the BBC. Free practise two at the Indian

:55:28. > :55:30.Grand Prix. Round 16 of 19 in this World Championship. We have seen

:55:31. > :55:34.most of the drivers doing their qualifying simulation runs. Vettel

:55:35. > :55:41.is fastest in free practise this morning and fastest again this

:55:42. > :55:47.afternoon. Just over, just under three tenths to his team-mate.

:55:48. > :55:55.Grosjean, the only one who has taken the fight to the Red Bulls.

:55:56. > :56:00.Hamilton is in tenth place. He has a set of soft tyres bolted on to the

:56:01. > :56:06.Mercedes now. We will see how close this Mercedes can get to the pace of

:56:07. > :56:11.the Red Bull. Rosberg, what is he? He is seven tenths slower. It was a

:56:12. > :56:17.troubled lap for Nico Rosberg because he has Alonso in front of

:56:18. > :56:22.him who hasn't been pulling up trees in terms of pace this season.

:56:23. > :56:29.A quick thought before we see Hamilton's lot. Jean-Eric Vergne

:56:30. > :56:35.knows his team-mate for next year is Daniil Kvyat. He is a 19-year-old

:56:36. > :56:40.Russian I I have been watching Daniil Kvyat closely this year and I

:56:41. > :56:44.like what I see. What are your thoughts? He is a ta he lented guy.

:56:45. > :56:52.-- he is a talented guy. He is a very, very fast driver. He is very

:56:53. > :56:55.young. He is 19. It is a big step GP 3 to Formula One. I am sure he will

:56:56. > :57:05.manage. They wouldn't put him in the car if they didn't think he was good

:57:06. > :57:11.enough. Obviously, I feel sorry for Felix in the World Series, he is out

:57:12. > :57:14.of a seat now and it will give Jean-Eric Vergne a run for his

:57:15. > :57:21.money. They have been sharing a flat. Yes,

:57:22. > :57:26.I mean, I don't think they will be living together now!

:57:27. > :57:32.I the don't think so! Daniil Kvyat will be moving to Monaco shortly!

:57:33. > :57:38.When you drive for Torro Rosso you do it for the honour. As a young

:57:39. > :57:43.driver, you don't get much money in your first years in Formula One. It

:57:44. > :57:48.is political. The fact that young drivers need to bring money to be

:57:49. > :57:53.able to drive these cars as a race driver, so it is very, very tough,

:57:54. > :58:03.but I'm looking forward to seeing Daniil Kvyat in the Torro Rosso and

:58:04. > :58:18.we will see if he is good enough. Torro Rosso had young drivers.

:58:19. > :58:23.Daniil Kvyat has done more.s The other thing that will be tricky for

:58:24. > :58:32.any rooky coming in next year is the complexity of the technology, you

:58:33. > :58:37.are talking about 1.6 hybrid turbo engines and managing the fuel. If

:58:38. > :58:42.you don't know any different, you just jump in and give it your best

:58:43. > :58:45.shot just like Lewis Hamilton? Lewis was doing a lot of testing before he

:58:46. > :58:50.got in the car. He was older and more experienced as

:58:51. > :58:56.well? Exactly. It is tough as a 19-year-old. It is not just the fact

:58:57. > :59:00.that it is the race driving, it is the mental pressure. It is the media

:59:01. > :59:08.and everything. It is overwhelming even for me and I'm getting on a bit

:59:09. > :59:14.now. I'm -- 24. The decision has been made and I'm sure it is the

:59:15. > :59:19.correct one. . On his qualifying simulation. So faster than

:59:20. > :59:26.team-mate, Rosberg by a couple of tenths and edges out Alonso as well.

:59:27. > :59:34.It is Vettel, Webber, Grosjean, Hamilton, Rosberg, Felipe Massa and

:59:35. > :59:38.Raikkonen. We have Lotus in the Great Ormond Street of -- in the

:59:39. > :59:45.form of Romain Grosjean putting pressure on the Red Bulls. And the

:59:46. > :59:51.Mercedes chasing as well? Romain Grosjean is doing a fantastic job.

:59:52. > :59:56.He seems to be edging out ahead of Kimi. Yeah, I think the red Bull is

:59:57. > :00:02.extremely strong. Even when you follow it, it has got fantastic

:00:03. > :00:12.grip. The Lotus is not far off. It will be interesting in the

:00:13. > :00:24.qualifying session. So one of the Ferraris is in the

:00:25. > :00:28.pits. In fact, it was Max Chilton. It was in fact, Felipe Massa who

:00:29. > :00:33.dived into the pits. At tht point we say thank you to James, but it is

:00:34. > :00:36.always a pleasure to see you in our paddock centre commentary position.

:00:37. > :00:40.Thanks for stopping by and good luck with getting a ride for next

:00:41. > :00:44.yearment of we hope to see you on the grid next year. James Calado

:00:45. > :00:47.then, the development driver, reserve driver for the Force India

:00:48. > :01:16.team. Sebastian Vettel is number four in

:01:17. > :01:39.the all-time winners' list. Six wins from pole position this

:01:40. > :01:45.year. He already has one hand on the Championship Trophy. He is on a

:01:46. > :01:49.longer run now, using the softer compound tyre. This is what James

:01:50. > :01:53.Calado was just talking about, in terms of looking after the tyres,

:01:54. > :01:57.managing them. What he is doing now is simulating the opening stint of

:01:58. > :02:01.the Grand Prix, he wants to see how long these tyres will last and how

:02:02. > :02:05.they will behave in the early phase of the Grand Prix, having done a

:02:06. > :02:09.hard qualifying lap on them. As Paul Hembery from Pirelli was telling us,

:02:10. > :02:15.they are expecting this to be a two stop race. First stop, somewhere

:02:16. > :02:18.around 15-17, ideally, and the second one in the late 30s.

:02:19. > :02:23.around 15-17, ideally, and the second Last year, most people

:02:24. > :02:29.stopping just the once. RADIO: That looks bad! I think he is

:02:30. > :02:34.talking about his left front tyre. It does look bad. It has got to

:02:35. > :02:41.bands of warm rubber clearly visible. The left front tyre of Nico

:02:42. > :02:45.Hulkenberg. I am delighted to say, joining us now is the communications

:02:46. > :02:50.director from the Toro Rosso team, and an old friend, Eric. You have

:02:51. > :02:53.got a 19-year-old, I do not know what it is about you, mentoring

:02:54. > :03:04.these young drivers, another 19-year-old, Daniil Kvyat, is he

:03:05. > :03:05.ready? No, absolutely not. They are not ready when they come to us,

:03:06. > :03:10.ready? No, absolutely not. They are not ready when they come that is the

:03:11. > :03:12.point, I suppose. We had a choice from the young drivers programme,

:03:13. > :03:17.and he was the most ready, as opposed to actually being ready. I

:03:18. > :03:23.met him at Silverstone at the young drivers' test for the first time,

:03:24. > :03:27.and he seems a very clever guy, even if he did put himself in the

:03:28. > :03:32.gravel. We will just see how he gets on. He is having a seat fitted soon,

:03:33. > :03:38.and then we will be taking him down to do enough miles to get his super

:03:39. > :03:44.licence, and then, all being well, he will run in the morning practice

:03:45. > :03:47.sessions in the last two races in Austin, Texas and Sao Paulo. We will

:03:48. > :03:53.see how he goes. Just 19 years of age, but I have to say, I have been

:03:54. > :03:57.watching GP3 quite closely, and he is quite impressive, he is not only

:03:58. > :04:07.quick but he looks like he has got quite a calm mentality on him. He

:04:08. > :04:12.looks reasonably strong in the head. Yes, he has certainly taken a step

:04:13. > :04:18.up in the last few races, I think. He has had some really strong

:04:19. > :04:23.performances. And so, we will see. His big moment comes in Abu Dhabi,

:04:24. > :04:27.and he is seven points behind the leader in the GP3 Championship come

:04:28. > :04:31.about is the last race, and I think the momentum is with him. That would

:04:32. > :04:40.be a good way to go into the winter, if he could win that Championship.

:04:41. > :04:47.And that is what we have just been seeing with Hulkenberg, a message

:04:48. > :04:51.from the engineer of Sebastian Vettel, saying, a lot of teams are

:04:52. > :04:56.struggling with the left front tyre, and Vettel himself observing

:04:57. > :05:00.that he feels it is going away after three or four laps. Those of you

:05:01. > :05:05.watching BBC Two, you can start to see a pattern beginning to emerge on

:05:06. > :05:09.that left front tyre, a darkening area about 3-4 inches from the

:05:10. > :05:15.inside shoulder of the tyre. Mark Webber has it, too. Gary Anderson is

:05:16. > :05:23.the man to analyse it, so Gary, tell us what we are seeing. It is what

:05:24. > :05:29.the compound of the tyre is about four millimetres thick of rubber.

:05:30. > :05:34.Basically, that part of the tread, it is not stiff enough, because it

:05:35. > :05:39.is a very soft compound. It is not stiff enough for these fast, long

:05:40. > :05:43.corners. Going around the corner, you will tear the top of the surface

:05:44. > :05:56.off, because it is moving too much, so it is tearing the rubber. It

:05:57. > :05:59.pulls off the rubber, and it will go away after four or five laps, but

:06:00. > :06:03.that is because you have worn quite a lot of rubber off the top, and

:06:04. > :06:07.when you start to do that, although the lap times get better, it does

:06:08. > :06:13.not last as long. So, if you run the car too fast through turn 10 and 11,

:06:14. > :06:20.you get a lot of graining, or you run it slow and hope that it comes

:06:21. > :06:23.back again, later in the race. So, definitely driver decisions to be

:06:24. > :06:25.made on Sunday afternoon. A perfect and graphic illustration of what we

:06:26. > :06:29.made on Sunday afternoon. A perfect and graphic mean by graining, with

:06:30. > :06:37.the top of the tyre beginning to shear off, like one of those

:06:38. > :06:40.old-fashioned rubbers you had at school, where there were lots of

:06:41. > :06:44.bits of rubber lying on your exercise book. That is essentially

:06:45. > :06:48.what happens with the top layer of the tyres. Vettel has gone into the

:06:49. > :06:55.pits, after three or four laps on those tyres. He had already got into

:06:56. > :07:00.big trouble, and his lap times had dropped off quite dramatically,

:07:01. > :07:04.after just three laps. Yes, I think it will be a problem throughout the

:07:05. > :07:07.field, if problem is the right word. I heard my guys on the radio

:07:08. > :07:14.complaining of similar problems. It is not just the guys at the top end

:07:15. > :07:24.of the grid, by any means. That is Eric, from the Toro Rosso team,

:07:25. > :07:27.joining just under half an hour of this you let session remaining. We

:07:28. > :07:35.have been speaking about your recruitment, Eric, of the young

:07:36. > :07:39.19-year-old, and in the case of this seat, which was made vacant by

:07:40. > :07:45.Daniel Ricciardo moving to Red Bull, it was Felix to cost and Carlos St

:07:46. > :07:49.Junior, both of them were pushing hard for the opportunity, so why did

:07:50. > :07:54.they not get it? It is a brutal thing to say, but the people who did

:07:55. > :08:03.the assessing just reckoned they were not good enough. They reckoned

:08:04. > :08:08.that Daniil was a better bet. Carlos is still very young, and does not

:08:09. > :08:12.have so much experience, and the cost, looking at his season, it did

:08:13. > :08:22.seem to plateau a bit. So maybe that had some influence on it. -- di

:08:23. > :08:27.Costa. If you think a guy has got the talent to do it eventually, then

:08:28. > :08:35.that is the guy you go for. So that is it for di Costa, is it I am not

:08:36. > :08:42.really the right person to ask. But I think he did enough to impress

:08:43. > :08:45.people like Dr Marco and the rest, that something will be done to find

:08:46. > :08:53.him some sort of seat in some sort of motorsport. One other thing

:08:54. > :09:00.people have been asking, with the Daniil Kvyat thing, is he bringing

:09:01. > :09:03.any money to this? I have seen all of the comments, and we have had

:09:04. > :09:12.quite a lot of criticism, but no, it was done purely on merit.

:09:13. > :09:22.RADIO: Very worn but stable at the moment. Nico Rosberg talking about

:09:23. > :09:28.that so, where is Rosberg? He is five or six laps in to his run on

:09:29. > :09:35.these tyres, ten seconds slower than his single lap pace. But bear in

:09:36. > :09:53.mind, he is carrying fuel. This tyre is in fact 14 laps old.

:09:54. > :09:59.So, it looks like Rosberg has been through the graining phase and got

:10:00. > :10:05.the tyre to stabilise again. It's of rubber flying off the front tyre of

:10:06. > :10:12.Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari, as he hammers down the long back

:10:13. > :10:17.straight. He is fifth fastest, just giving the tyres a bit of a

:10:18. > :10:21.breather. Lots of storylines coming out of this practice session. 24

:10:22. > :10:25.minutes remaining. It is a challenge for the teams, to get on top of the

:10:26. > :10:29.tyres this weekend. It is certainly not going to be a one-stop race,

:10:30. > :10:35.Eric. It does not look that way at all. With the dirty track and the

:10:36. > :10:39.graining, it makes finding the proper setup even harder on a day

:10:40. > :10:42.like this. I went into my garage, and it looked as though there had

:10:43. > :10:46.been a car crash in the garage, there were so many bits off the car,

:10:47. > :10:54.as we were trying various things. We have been talking about Toro Rosso,

:10:55. > :11:01.who have signed Daniil Kvyat signed for next year, and you have got a

:11:02. > :11:04.number of sponsors on the car now which are from the Middle East, so I

:11:05. > :11:09.sense a bit of a shift within the team, with the influence of the

:11:10. > :11:14.Middle East, Abu Dhabi in particular? That is correct. I have

:11:15. > :11:18.heard it referred to as our home race, which is strange. Basically,

:11:19. > :11:23.all our sponsors are part of a group which is based there. They have

:11:24. > :11:26.invested heavily in us, and hopefully we will be able to deliver

:11:27. > :11:31.some good results for the next season.

:11:32. > :11:35.RADIO: It looks like the option tyre is quite fragile, so I am going to

:11:36. > :11:40.try to run the prime tyre until the end of the session, if we can. So,

:11:41. > :11:44.Perez being told by his engineer at McLaren that the soft tyre is

:11:45. > :11:48.looking fragile, in other words, only good for 3-5 laps, so they are

:11:49. > :11:53.going to run the medium tyre, which he is on at the moment, through to

:11:54. > :11:58.the end of the session, routing a super long run on the medium

:11:59. > :12:03.tyre... Something flying off Maldonado's right front corner

:12:04. > :12:16.there. Or was that just my imagination? Yes, absolutely, the

:12:17. > :12:19.tyre has now deflated. It looked like one of the brake discs was

:12:20. > :12:32.glowing bright orange. He has now pulled over. The right front tyre on

:12:33. > :12:36.that Williams has deflated. He is on the outside of the pit lane entry.

:12:37. > :12:42.Whatever it was that went inside the right front wheel, it looks like it

:12:43. > :12:45.has brought him to stop. Of course, they had a problem in Japan as well,

:12:46. > :13:01.so it looks like Williams have got something to deal with. Lets see if

:13:02. > :13:09.we can work out what happened. Anyway, I am sure an explanation

:13:10. > :13:15.will be forthcoming. Gary Anderson, you are watching these pictures, do

:13:16. > :13:21.you have any thoughts at these stage? I think the right front wheel

:13:22. > :13:29.that was missing. It was wobbling around a bit, the right front. And

:13:30. > :13:40.then the wheel is loose, and it is running on the brake duct. It got

:13:41. > :13:49.warm through on the inside, and that has let the air out of it. It just

:13:50. > :13:59.wears through, and then, there is no air. They got fined 60,000 euros in

:14:00. > :14:03.Japan for a rear wheel coming off. It is an expensive business letting

:14:04. > :14:08.wheel nuts come off. There you can seek it bouncing down the road. The

:14:09. > :14:18.other camera followed the wheel nut, as you say. As you say, the

:14:19. > :14:31.cameraman, following it like somebody at the open, following a

:14:32. > :14:34.golf ball. There is a little bit of bodywork, a bit of detritus, from

:14:35. > :14:40.the car, also down there. Maldonado is off the line which takes you into

:14:41. > :14:44.the pit lane entry, so he is not a risk to anybody. But clearly the

:14:45. > :14:49.car, with a punctured right front, and no wheel nut on the right front

:14:50. > :14:52.corner, is not the easiest thing for these marshals to move. There is

:14:53. > :14:56.quite a lot of experience in this part of the world. Eric Silberman,

:14:57. > :15:00.you are a former Marshall, and the volunteer sect is so vital to

:15:01. > :15:03.motorsport, tens of thousands of them who do it at all of the Grand

:15:04. > :15:14.Prix, and they are pretty well trained here in India.

:15:15. > :15:22.It is good. You get people from more historically motorsport countries

:15:23. > :15:26.coming over. A lot of marshals from the UK and other European countries

:15:27. > :15:33.to be split amongst the locals to give them experience because you

:15:34. > :15:39.can't expect these guys to know it all. As you say, a vital role and of

:15:40. > :15:44.course, the forklift truck. A sign that something has gone wrong.

:15:45. > :15:48.Just looking at the long runs here. It looks as though the frary is

:15:49. > :15:57.holding on to the -- Ferrari is holding on to the softer tyre well.

:15:58. > :16:03.Mark Webber is a shade faster on the medium tyre than Alonso is on the

:16:04. > :16:09.soft, but Alonso's soft tyre, lap times not dissimilar to Sebastian

:16:10. > :16:14.Vettel's. We have seen Ferrari be gentle on the tyres as we know the

:16:15. > :16:20.Lotus is and the Force India and crucial to Alonso's outcome this

:16:21. > :16:24.weekend will be his performance in qualifying. It looks like he might

:16:25. > :16:29.have a reasonably strong first stint in the race, but from what we are

:16:30. > :16:33.seeing so far, Gary Anderson, Maldonado walks back into the pits.

:16:34. > :16:36.It looks like we are going to have a two stop race and it looks like the

:16:37. > :16:41.medium tyre is going to be the tyre that the teams will favour. They

:16:42. > :16:44.want to get rid of this soft tyre as quickly as they can? If you go back

:16:45. > :16:52.to last year's race, Sebastian Vettel went to lap 33 before he

:16:53. > :17:02.pitted to put on the medium tyre. He did 33 laps on it. That put him in a

:17:03. > :17:09.good position at the end of the race if he needed to have better tyres to

:17:10. > :17:16.fight anyone off. These tyres are the soft tyre and we are seeing them

:17:17. > :17:21.struggle at 13, 14 and 15. I agree with you, looking at the lap times

:17:22. > :17:30.there is going to be the soft tyre and the m he had stadium -- and the

:17:31. > :17:33.medium, medium. That will make it interesting

:17:34. > :17:39.because we have seen Daniel Ricciardo Harting on the -- starting

:17:40. > :17:45.on the harder compound and running a long first stint and it worked well

:17:46. > :17:50.for him if he hadn't the penalty he got in Japan. This looks like a

:17:51. > :17:53.weekend where we may see people trying that because the tyres are

:17:54. > :18:00.the way they are. If you qualify 11th or behind, you could be in for

:18:01. > :18:08.an interesting race if you can run a longish first stint on the medium

:18:09. > :18:12.tyre? You are right, it would have worked for Daniel if the Stewarts

:18:13. > :18:18.hadn't taken the unusual decision over his brilliant overtaking a move

:18:19. > :18:26.around the outside at 130 R. Not that you are bitter? Not at all!

:18:27. > :18:29.Thank you for joining us. It is fantastic to get your views

:18:30. > :18:43.particularly on Daniil Kvyat who I am going to have to fun pronouncing

:18:44. > :18:51.that! Kvyat! It is easier said than done! We are unlikely to see times

:18:52. > :18:55.improving because we have had the single lap qualifying simulations

:18:56. > :19:10.earlier on in the sessions. We have 16 minutes remaining in this

:19:11. > :19:14.session. And we have got a member of the Lotus team joining us. A

:19:15. > :19:18.challenging day from the driver's point of view. Looking after the

:19:19. > :19:21.soft tyres is going to be a huge thing this weekend. You are the

:19:22. > :19:27.reserve driver for the Lotus team and you guys are the best at looking

:19:28. > :19:33.after the tyres. Do you sense an opportunity here? Thank you. Yes, it

:19:34. > :19:36.can be interesting for us to be honest because we saw so many

:19:37. > :19:43.drivers and teams they had a problem with the front tyres blistering. So

:19:44. > :19:54.it can be something really good for us because we did the first stint

:19:55. > :20:02.with softer and we simulated very well. It was one of the quickest. It

:20:03. > :20:08.seems it is a great opportunity if the cars can qualify in the top two

:20:09. > :20:16.rows, we will have a satisfactory weekend.

:20:17. > :20:21.The tyre is 14 laps old. There is Lewis' radio.

:20:22. > :20:23.TEAM RADIO: We need to make sure we get the stint length on this. Make

:20:24. > :20:29.sure you look after them. The pace is very good. Hamilton

:20:30. > :20:37.running on the softer compound tyres. Let's look at his long run.

:20:38. > :20:41.It is in the mid-1.42 range. It is can comparable with the Ferrari of

:20:42. > :20:46.Alonso. It looks like Hamilton is getting reasonable behaviour out of

:20:47. > :20:55.the soft tyres. What are your guys doing? You have Grosjean on the

:20:56. > :21:00.medium tyre and Raikkonen on the soft. He has only started a soft

:21:01. > :21:04.tyre run so it is fairly early days. 14 minutes remaining on the clock.

:21:05. > :21:09.He is amazing though, Raikkonen, in terms of the way he is able to drive

:21:10. > :21:13.these tyres and look after them in a race situation? Yes. He is something

:21:14. > :21:19.special. You know sometimes during the weekend he is not really there.

:21:20. > :21:26.Like sometimes in free practise he is not performing well, but in the

:21:27. > :21:30.race he is always in the top five. One victory already this year. He is

:21:31. > :21:34.something special. He can manage the tyres in a way that other drivers

:21:35. > :21:40.cannot. He is extremely fast and quick in the last part of the race

:21:41. > :21:48.with really low fuel. Yes, he is a big talent and I think we can earn

:21:49. > :21:53.some good results with him this week if the situation remains like this.

:21:54. > :22:02.Grosjean has been taking a the fight to the Red Bulls particularly the

:22:03. > :22:06.Korea, Japan leg. In qualifying, but Kimi has not been at the party on

:22:07. > :22:13.Saturday in terms of the single lap qualifying. What's the problem

:22:14. > :22:20.there? We don't know. Yes, he is struggling in terms of performance

:22:21. > :22:29.in quali compared to Romain Grosjean. He got the last free

:22:30. > :22:35.quali, he was twice in third position. Grosjean is competitive

:22:36. > :22:39.and Raikkonen lost performance, but at the end of the race he is always

:22:40. > :22:43.there. We are scoring good points and it seems that our team is in a

:22:44. > :22:58.good shape to recover points from Mercedes and to Mercedes and

:22:59. > :23:04.Ferrari. Hamilton is a great talent and it will be easy for us to beat

:23:05. > :23:09.them. In Suzuka when we were really competitive on Saturday, one of the

:23:10. > :23:15.Mercedes beat us. So we will try to stay in front of them because it is

:23:16. > :23:27.important for us to be in the top and to fight with Red Bull.

:23:28. > :23:31.TEAM RADIO: You want to continue. Raikkonen told to keep going for as

:23:32. > :23:34.long as the tyres have got performance left in them and it is

:23:35. > :23:39.these moments where Raikkonen is learning. This is where he is doing

:23:40. > :23:43.his homework for the race as are all the drivers in terms of when the

:23:44. > :23:51.tyre starts to go and how to keep it the right side of the overheating

:23:52. > :23:58.and the right side of the graining too much? Yes. He then comes the

:23:59. > :24:03.race and yes, he is trying to understand it and I think he learned

:24:04. > :24:11.a way to use it for Sunday sometimes. The reserve driver for

:24:12. > :24:19.the Lotus Formula One Team is with us. Lotus are only 33 points away

:24:20. > :24:33.from third place. They are fourth at the moment. They are 33 points away.

:24:34. > :24:40.Ferrari on 297 points and Mercedes on 267. If Red Bull aren't in it, it

:24:41. > :24:46.would be a good scrap. But they are in it. Although no one is focussed

:24:47. > :24:50.on Vettel requiring the fifth place finish whatever Alonso does this

:24:51. > :24:53.weekend, only a fifth place would be enough to give Vettel the world

:24:54. > :24:57.title for the fourth year running. It is the case that if Red Bull

:24:58. > :25:04.leave here with 129 points margin or more over the second placed team

:25:05. > :25:16.they will be constructors champions for the fourth year in a row. A

:25:17. > :25:19.spark blowing out of Kimi Raikkonen's car. We are into the

:25:20. > :25:23.final ten minutes of this session. What is the feeling in the Lotus

:25:24. > :25:30.Team about this circuit here in India? Is it one of the popular ones

:25:31. > :25:38.amongst the team? The layout of the circuit is really nice and the

:25:39. > :25:46.drivers like it, but to be honest, the atmosphere of the great event

:25:47. > :25:50.like England or za in -- Monza in Italy, you miss the atmosphere from

:25:51. > :25:57.the people around. They are not really experts about motorsport, but

:25:58. > :26:02.you know for us, coming to India is a great experience and a way to

:26:03. > :26:06.improve a better situation in New deli.

:26:07. > :26:11.The English are always partial to Indian food. Some of the best Indian

:26:12. > :26:18.restaurants are in England. Do you like Italian food? Sometimes a bit

:26:19. > :26:26.too spicy for the he racing driver. You have all got tell cat

:26:27. > :26:31.constitutions, haven't you? Fernando Alonso there. That looks

:26:32. > :26:38.good, doesn't it? I don't think it is good enough to beat Vettel, but

:26:39. > :26:43.yes, maybe a top five position, yes. It is interesting that Alonso seems

:26:44. > :26:49.to have struggled relative to Massa. The same thing happened at the end

:26:50. > :26:54.of last season. Any sense what that is down to? We have to consider that

:26:55. > :27:00.it is not possible to change the set-up between Saturday and Sunday.

:27:01. > :27:04.Sometimes some of the top drivers and Raikkonen is also like this, try

:27:05. > :27:11.to make a set-up that is performing better for the race. So sometimes

:27:12. > :27:17.they suffer more on Saturday, but they destroy their team-mate on

:27:18. > :27:21.Sunday. So we have to consider that maybe Alonso Saturday is thinking

:27:22. > :27:28.more for the race distance. It is true. If you look at Raikkonen

:27:29. > :27:31.Singapore and Korea. It is arguable that he would have got a better

:27:32. > :27:38.result if he started further up the grid because Vettel was home and

:27:39. > :27:48.hosed you cans wasn't -- wasn't he? TEAM RADIO: This doesn't look great

:27:49. > :27:55.for Nico on the tyre. The Nico Rosberg car isn't looking too good

:27:56. > :28:02.on the medium compound tyre. And so they want to stick Hamilton on to it

:28:03. > :28:07.so he can see how it works for him. The lap times are erratic for

:28:08. > :28:15.Rosberg. He is banging in laps in the high 1.31s, but also 35s and 34s

:28:16. > :28:20.a mixed in. Mercedes are not happy with the balance of the car on the

:28:21. > :28:24.medium tyre. It look like Hamilton was doing OK laps on the soft. So

:28:25. > :28:29.they will be reasonably pleased and cautious welcome for the tyre. Some

:28:30. > :28:34.people are having more problems than the Mercedes are having. It is

:28:35. > :28:39.something that they have to take care of because we have to consider

:28:40. > :28:44.if the soft tyre goes away so quickly, we will see a race where

:28:45. > :28:48.more or less everyone will use medium compound tyres for most of

:28:49. > :28:55.the race. So it is extremely important to be fast and quick on

:28:56. > :29:05.these type of tyres. It is a 60 lap race on Sunday. Gary Anderson is in

:29:06. > :29:09.the pit lane at Ferrari? You can see the rear tyre, you can see these

:29:10. > :29:13.marks. These are called blisters. With wheelspin the rear tyres are

:29:14. > :29:19.overheating. The front tyres have grained. They have gone through the

:29:20. > :29:26.graining stage. They have grained. Three or four or five laps later

:29:27. > :29:30.they clean up. At the same time the rear tyres deteriorate. It is the

:29:31. > :29:35.blistering which will reduce your performance as far as lap times are

:29:36. > :29:40.concerned. That's what you call degradation. Here, it is like Korea,

:29:41. > :29:47.we have everything happening to the tyres. When you go to four or five

:29:48. > :29:51.laps, as the graining clears up. It will be a head scratcher on Sunday

:29:52. > :29:53.afternoon. That's what you were saying earlier.

:29:54. > :29:56.It will be good. It will be challenging for the teams and the

:29:57. > :30:01.drivers as well. The best thing to have is a fast car because you can

:30:02. > :30:05.deal with every situation. I guess you guys at Lotus feel you have got

:30:06. > :30:12.the second fastest car out there, second or third fastest? Second or

:30:13. > :30:17.third fastest. Sometimes in qualifying, they are faster than us,

:30:18. > :30:19.but we are really on top. If you have a fast car during the race and

:30:20. > :30:24.you are worried about degradation, you back off and conserve the tyres

:30:25. > :30:27.and go longer. The trick is to be fast.

:30:28. > :30:44.Adrian Newey up on the timing stand. Next year, we have the introduction

:30:45. > :30:49.of completely new technology into Formula 1. Out goes the Gaskell 's

:30:50. > :31:02.Lynn V8, in comes the 1.6 litre, hybrids turbo engine. -- gas

:31:03. > :31:06.guzzling. About a third of the lap, the drivers will be able to use

:31:07. > :31:10.their new energy recovery system, as opposed to the horsepower. It is

:31:11. > :31:15.going to be fascinating. It will be Billy interesting, it is a massive

:31:16. > :31:21.change. For the drivers, they will need to adapt on the drive inside,

:31:22. > :31:27.and sometimes, the engineers, they speak about the consumption of the

:31:28. > :31:35.engine, and some teams will struggle a bit in the last part of the race,

:31:36. > :31:39.with the fuel. And so the drivers will have to manage the fuel

:31:40. > :31:46.consumption, which is not easy. Absolutely. They have all got heavy

:31:47. > :31:50.right feet! That is another thing they have to manage. It is going to

:31:51. > :31:56.go down from about 150 kilos of fuel, which they currently use to

:31:57. > :32:05.complete A303 's, down to about 100 kilowatts of those -- down to about

:32:06. > :32:08.100 kilograms. That is a huge reduction. It is a message being

:32:09. > :32:13.sent out by the sport, in terms of fuel consumption, and also there is

:32:14. > :32:19.the question of reliability, with 21, 22 races next year, with only

:32:20. > :32:24.five engines, potentially. It is not so much the actual power unit, the

:32:25. > :32:28.engine itself, but it is the energy recovery system. I am not sure

:32:29. > :32:32.anybody has managed to get those things to last that length of time.

:32:33. > :32:37.So, we are probably going to see some unreliability coming back in,

:32:38. > :32:41.and we have not seen that for quite a few years. Speaking to your

:32:42. > :32:45.opposite number at Ferrari, Pedro De la Russa, who has been on the

:32:46. > :32:48.simulator at Ferrari looking at driving techniques for saving fuel

:32:49. > :32:52.last year, he tells me, there are all kinds of things you can do in

:32:53. > :32:56.terms of the way you drive the car, the way you roll into the corners

:32:57. > :33:04.and stuff, you can save a lot of fuel. Are you looking at the same

:33:05. > :33:09.things? Yes, you are right. And it seems, just to release the throttle

:33:10. > :33:16.at the end of the straight, before the braking point, you can save fuel

:33:17. > :33:20.that way as well. And usually, that is the way that permits you to use

:33:21. > :33:27.less fuel, without losing performance. Sometimes you can

:33:28. > :33:31.regulate the throttle on except, and try to have some tricks, but you

:33:32. > :33:35.lose performance, which is not what we want. So, it is important to be

:33:36. > :33:43.more measured on the throttle, really, rather than hitting it too

:33:44. > :33:46.hard? Yes, because with these engines, sometimes there will be

:33:47. > :33:49.much more power just at the beginning of the throttle

:33:50. > :33:56.application, so for the driver, it will be extremely important to be a

:33:57. > :34:03.bit more gradual with the throttle. Which sort of drivers do you think

:34:04. > :34:10.it will favour? Always the same, the best drivers, Hamilton, Vettel,

:34:11. > :34:18.Alonso, Raikkonen. Always the same, do not worry. The fastest driver at

:34:19. > :34:23.the end will have the victory. The sport is made by drivers. I could

:34:24. > :34:28.not agree more, although I think your guy, Grosjean, seems to be

:34:29. > :34:31.improving a lot, I have been impressed with him in Japan last

:34:32. > :34:38.time out. 30 seconds remaining on the clock, at the end of this second

:34:39. > :34:42.free practice session. But was Davide Valsecchi, the reserve driver

:34:43. > :34:46.for the Lotus Formula 1 team. Also down in the pit lane, Gary Anderson

:34:47. > :34:51.and Jennie Gow, throughout this session. It looks like Sebastian

:34:52. > :34:55.Vettel is going to end up on top of the time sheets yet again, as he was

:34:56. > :35:02.this morning, and as he was in every practice session last year. Can he

:35:03. > :35:06.make it a 100% record around this track? Who knows when we will be

:35:07. > :35:13.coming back to India? The chequered flag is now out at the end of this

:35:14. > :35:17.session. There is certainly not going to be an Indian Grand Prix in

:35:18. > :35:26.2014. There is some talk about it possibly coming back in the early

:35:27. > :35:32.part of the season in 2015. That was Mark Webber being told, tried to

:35:33. > :35:37.lift a bit more in turn eight to help you through turn nine. Just

:35:38. > :35:41.looking at Alonso's Long Run times, they look pretty good. I think

:35:42. > :35:45.Ferrari will be quite pleased. They are fifth fastest, which is pretty

:35:46. > :35:52.much where Alonso has been for the last three or four years, in terms

:35:53. > :35:58.of pace. It is a bit more difficult to tell with Raikkonen, as it always

:35:59. > :36:01.is with Raikkonen. As Davide Valsecchi was telling us, he does

:36:02. > :36:06.his own thing, really. But we know what Raikkonen is up to when we get

:36:07. > :36:16.to the race on Sunday. Particularly in the last 10-15 laps, he tends to

:36:17. > :36:19.always be there. This is a circuit where a Sebastian Vettel tends to

:36:20. > :36:23.have the edge over his team-mate, Mark Webber. Webber seems to have

:36:24. > :36:26.the edge at places like Silverstone and Suzuka, faces with the

:36:27. > :36:31.high-speed corners that he really loves. The tight, right-handed,

:36:32. > :36:40.second gear corners, that is where Vettel makes a big difference. I

:36:41. > :36:45.think Vettel looks a bit unbeatable. Also, when he has the chance to be

:36:46. > :36:49.close to his team-mate, the team tries to do something to help

:36:50. > :36:59.Vettel, and we saw last weekend, in Suzuka, where Webber was strong

:37:00. > :37:02.enough maybe to win the race, but there was a change of strategy, and

:37:03. > :37:06.Vettel, we know that he is a great champion, and with a little help

:37:07. > :37:12.from Red Bull, he got another great victory. And I think it will be the

:37:13. > :37:16.same story here. Vettel for sure is the favourite for the race. What was

:37:17. > :37:20.interesting about Suzuka was Roman Grosjean getting in front of him at

:37:21. > :37:25.the start, which made things more interesting and more challenging for

:37:26. > :37:29.him, which forced Red Bull to switch strategies. Hamilton, when he got a

:37:30. > :37:33.puncture, was also in front of Vettel. If he had not had the

:37:34. > :37:36.puncture, it would've been a very different ways, and a very

:37:37. > :37:40.interesting race, and I think in that situation, Vettel could well

:37:41. > :37:44.have got moved onto three spots. Yes, Hamilton got a really great

:37:45. > :37:49.start, and at the first corner, he could have been a real challenger,

:37:50. > :37:53.because they were leading. Let's take stop of what has happened this

:37:54. > :37:58.afternoon here in free practice in Delhi. Once again, it is a 1-2 for

:37:59. > :38:02.the Red Bull team, with Roman Grosjean once again taking the fight

:38:03. > :38:11.to the Red Bulls, just like he did in Japan. Hamilton again, pretty

:38:12. > :38:16.strong on the single lap, in fourth. Alonso, encouraging race performance

:38:17. > :38:17.for them. If they can find a qualifying lap tomorrow, he could be

:38:18. > :38:34.in the hunt for the podium. Maldonado, 16th, he had a wheel nuts

:38:35. > :38:39.detaching, and they could be in trouble for that, after what

:38:40. > :38:45.happened in Japan. So, Davide Valsecchi, can you sum up for us,

:38:46. > :38:53.reserve driver at Lotus, what we think we have seen here today in

:38:54. > :38:57.free practice? Yes, it was an interesting day, to be honest just

:38:58. > :39:01.it seems that Red Bull will be really difficult to beat. It seems

:39:02. > :39:06.that Mercedes will have the chance to be on the second row in

:39:07. > :39:11.qualification. It seems that Lotus can fight at least for the podium

:39:12. > :39:16.during the Sunday race. The only team which seems to have dropped a

:39:17. > :39:21.bit in terms of performance compared with last week is Sauber. They were

:39:22. > :39:25.seventh and eighth at the end of the race in Suzuka, and here, they are

:39:26. > :39:30.really out of the top ten. It will not be easy for them to be in the

:39:31. > :39:34.points. And encouraging signs for Lotus, with Roman Grosjean up in

:39:35. > :39:38.third place, as he was in Japan last time out. Are you expecting a

:39:39. > :39:46.challenge from him? Yes, Raikkonen our leader at the moment, 100%.

:39:47. > :39:49.Davide Valsecchi, thank you so much for joining us in our commentary

:39:50. > :39:56.position, in the centre of the paddock here in Delhi. That is it

:39:57. > :39:59.from Practice 2. Another Red Bull 1-2, another very interesting

:40:00. > :40:03.session in many ways, not least in terms of the left front tyres. A

:40:04. > :40:05.lots to think about for the teams, ahead of qualifying tomorrow and the

:40:06. > :40:13.race on Sunday. ahead of qualifying tomorrow and the

:40:14. > :40:19.race on Ominous signs, Gary Anderson, Sebastian Vettel, fastest

:40:20. > :40:24.once again... Yes, you do not have to wear glasses for that one. I do

:40:25. > :40:28.not think it is all over yet. It might not be as easy as it was last

:40:29. > :40:33.year. I think Mercedes are reasonably strong, and there is

:40:34. > :40:38.Roman Grosjean as well. But the Red Bulls do look as though they have

:40:39. > :40:41.got a reasonable handle both on the qualifying as well as on the race

:40:42. > :40:46.setup. You would be a full not to bet on them. But it is a situation

:40:47. > :40:50.where you have just got to do the best job you can. If the Red Bulls

:40:51. > :40:57.are in front of you, so be it. You cannot change that. It is always

:40:58. > :41:01.interesting seeing the pictures of the drivers walking down, there is a

:41:02. > :41:05.lot to talk about at this stage of the weekend. Yes, they have done a

:41:06. > :41:11.bit of a run as far as qualifying is concerned, and also in race setup,

:41:12. > :41:17.but there will be some changes going on on the cards tonight. You have to

:41:18. > :41:21.see how the tyres are lasting, and then you may have to compromise on

:41:22. > :41:24.the ultimate lap pace just a little bit, to make sure that you are

:41:25. > :41:29.durable. That was what this afternoon's session was about.

:41:30. > :41:37.Tomorrow goes so quickly, it is just a one-hour practice section,

:41:38. > :41:46.session, and then you are in to qualifying. Christian Horner, we saw

:41:47. > :41:53.you on the pit wall looking pretty happy, are you as happy as you look?

:41:54. > :41:58.We are always happy. No, I think it has been a positive day for us. We

:41:59. > :42:03.have worked through our programme, had a good look at the tyres, which

:42:04. > :42:08.seem to be fairly contrasting, but it has been a positive day. Just

:42:09. > :42:11.talk us through those tyres, because it looked like a lot of graining was

:42:12. > :42:16.going on, and they are not going to last very long, especially on the

:42:17. > :42:22.front left. It is quite aggressive on the front left around it is the

:42:23. > :42:30.opposite of Korea, very similar but the opposite way around. Tyres will

:42:31. > :42:35.be playing a key role in this race. We will be doing our homework this

:42:36. > :42:39.afternoon, having a look at the two compounds, and making strategy

:42:40. > :42:55.choices for Sunday. Will it be challenging on Sunday because of

:42:56. > :42:56.that? Yes, you probably could not have two more diametrically opposed

:42:57. > :43:00.tyres. Do you still believe Sebastian Vettel can win his fourth

:43:01. > :43:04.straight World Championship here? We are not really thinking about that.

:43:05. > :43:08.Our focus is very much on the race. We have got ourselves into a great

:43:09. > :43:13.position in the championships, but we are focused on getting the most

:43:14. > :43:17.out of this weekend, and then, the Championship tables, they will take

:43:18. > :43:22.care of themselves. Is the main threat Lotus this weekend? Lotus and

:43:23. > :43:27.Ferrari have looked strong. Mercedes certainly will be up there as well.

:43:28. > :43:34.Take your pick. Thanks very much, Christian Horner. Gary, it seems

:43:35. > :43:38.that whilst engines are noisy, tyres are troublesome, so I we expecting

:43:39. > :43:42.more problems for Pirelli? In reality, it is going to be a two

:43:43. > :43:47.stop race. I do not think it is problems for Pirelli. We will see

:43:48. > :43:51.the left front graining after four or five laps. We will see the right

:43:52. > :43:55.front looking a bit horrible, but that is actually rather getting

:43:56. > :44:02.picked up. And when they change the medium tyre, it will be a bit more

:44:03. > :44:05.uniform. But I think the length of life of the soft tyre is going to

:44:06. > :44:14.lead them into a two stop race, for sure. How much will this circuit

:44:15. > :44:24.evolved over the course of the weekend? It does mature as the

:44:25. > :44:27.weekend goes by. But the one thing which will help a little bit is that

:44:28. > :44:32.each driver goes into qualifying with three sets of soft tyres and

:44:33. > :44:38.three sets of medium tyres. They will use the three sets of soft

:44:39. > :44:42.tyres in qualifying, and as the tyre gets more mature, it ends up on

:44:43. > :44:47.Sunday a little bit harder, which makes it a bit more durable, but it

:44:48. > :44:50.is not enough to make it into a one-stop race, I am sure about

:44:51. > :44:54.that. Some drivers were struggling with grip, Amy Raikkonen was the

:44:55. > :45:03.first to have a little spin out on track, tell us what was going on

:45:04. > :45:07.here. Again, with the rear brakes, you are recharging the KERS package

:45:08. > :45:10.as you come into the corner, and it is very easy to overload the rear

:45:11. > :45:14.tyre. You are coming up a blind hill, trying to turn into the apex

:45:15. > :45:20.which you cannot see until the last minute. It is no big problem, it is

:45:21. > :45:24.just one of those situations where it is better to do it on Friday in

:45:25. > :45:30.practice than it is on Sunday afternoon. Now is the time to make

:45:31. > :45:34.mistakes. Sadly, someone who made a mistake quite recently, and again

:45:35. > :45:40.today, were the Williams team, with their wheel nuts. Yes, we saw it

:45:41. > :45:45.going out of the pits, and the next thing we saw was a right front wheel

:45:46. > :45:52.nut coming off. It goes on to the brake caliper, cutting through the

:45:53. > :45:56.rim itself. There is supposed to be a safety device to stop this

:45:57. > :46:05.happening. A sickly, that wheel nuts would not be able to fall off. --

:46:06. > :46:11.basically. That was the real problem. It should not be able to

:46:12. > :46:15.fall off. They had a rear wheel coming off, and they got fined

:46:16. > :46:20.60,000 euros. This time, it was not the rear wheel, but it was the wheel

:46:21. > :46:24.nut. This is the Red Bull garage, and we can see on the end of the

:46:25. > :46:28.axle, these little toggles which stick out, they are sprung loaded,

:46:29. > :46:33.and when you put the wheel nut on there, they come back out, so the

:46:34. > :46:37.wheel nut, if it comes off, it should jam up behind those little

:46:38. > :46:41.toggles. This came into existence because of Mark Webber having the

:46:42. > :46:45.wheel nut coming off in the pit lane and heating a cameraman. It is a

:46:46. > :46:49.safety requirement, and Williams seem to be not complying with the

:46:50. > :46:56.regulation. Lets see what Mark Webber had to say.

:46:57. > :47:02.Well, Mark, one and two in both sessions today. How did you see it?

:47:03. > :47:06.We are going OK on long and shortish runs. Normal stuff on Friday. We can

:47:07. > :47:10.talk as much as we want, but it is the race that counts. Yeah, we have

:47:11. > :47:14.got some work to do tonight. Last year it was a one stop race. On

:47:15. > :47:18.the evidence of today, do you think we are going to see something

:47:19. > :47:23.different on Sunday? It is not impossible. Can you enlighten us

:47:24. > :47:35.anymore? There was a lot of graining on the softer of the two compounds?

:47:36. > :47:39.Yes, we are having to go through everything. Practise is different to

:47:40. > :47:45.the race. The one stop can come into play, but who knows until race day

:47:46. > :47:49.We have to go with the pack, the pace which hopefully is us and we

:47:50. > :47:53.can control the race from there. This racetrack isn't used much

:47:54. > :47:58.during the year. Talk us through the race conditions today? Better than

:47:59. > :48:04.last year and the previous years. The pit lane was in better shape so

:48:05. > :48:08.we could get down to descent work today. The track conditions were

:48:09. > :48:12.pretty good. Mark Webber's biggest problem will

:48:13. > :48:16.be Sebastian Vettel. Sebastian Vettel for the win? Yes, I think so.

:48:17. > :48:25.The Mercedes won't be far away. Thank you. If we take a look around.

:48:26. > :48:29.What's Charles Pic's brother. He is in the support race. It is not all

:48:30. > :48:33.about Formula One, but it is about Formula One on the BBC this weekend.

:48:34. > :48:44.You can see free practise three with me on BBC Two at 6.25am.

:48:45. > :48:51.If you are feeling lazy, we cater for you too. There is a replay.

:48:52. > :48:53.Sebastian Vettel certainly dealt the first blows today. Thanks for

:48:54. > :48:57.watching. Bye-bye.
