:01:05. > :01:10.Hello and a blustery welcome to Austen, Texas. This is the Circuit

:01:11. > :01:13.of The Americas and it proved to be huge hit when it made -- when it

:01:14. > :01:20.made its debut last year. The drivers enjoyed the circuit and was

:01:21. > :01:26.a lot of lava from race fans. Much better than NASCAR. Or even Indy

:01:27. > :01:32.car. It is great to experience. It is like our rock concert and sport

:01:33. > :01:39.event all rolled into one. This track is fabulous, just amazing.

:01:40. > :01:43.Lights out and away we go! Sebastian Vettel gets off well. Hamilton on

:01:44. > :01:49.the inside and a good start from Alonso. He is in fourth. Hamilton

:01:50. > :02:00.into second place. Button, dicing with Michael

:02:01. > :02:07.Schumacher. Michael does what he does, and gets a big squeeze quite

:02:08. > :02:22.late. Altenburg has a chance. -- Hoffenberg. Brave staff.

:02:23. > :02:29.Lewis Hamilton on the attack and Sebastian Vettel knows it. Hamilton

:02:30. > :02:31.has taken the lead. He is the first-ever winner of the Circuit of

:02:32. > :02:54.The Americas. That was wicked! Glorious memories of Lewis Hamilton

:02:55. > :02:58.winning last year. No Eddie this week, you will be joining us at

:02:59. > :03:03.Brazil next week when we're alive. What we're looking for it for to

:03:04. > :03:07.some thrilling action. Axelle Lemaire. It is horrific track. The

:03:08. > :03:15.drivers aren't easy a stick about being in America. That adds some

:03:16. > :03:19.enthusiasm. Do you think the track is so good because it was modelled

:03:20. > :03:26.on other good tracks? I think so, and also elevation change, which

:03:27. > :03:29.adds a bit of a roller-coaster feel. When you are driving over a blind

:03:30. > :03:33.brow, it gives a little bit of extra feeling in the cockpit and puts a

:03:34. > :03:35.smile on your face. This is the ultimate race of the 2013 season,

:03:36. > :03:39.smile on your face. This is the ultimate race for ever remembered

:03:40. > :03:43.for one man's dominance, Sebastian Vettel, now looking to conquer

:03:44. > :03:47.various records. With 11 wins under his belt this year, he needs victory

:03:48. > :03:54.at the two remaining events to equal Schumacher's feet of 13 in a season.

:03:55. > :03:57.If we look at the tally, a victory here would take into eight in a row,

:03:58. > :04:01.beating the current record of seven held by Schumacher and Alberto is

:04:02. > :04:07.Gary. Fernando Alonso looks safe now. Kimi Raikkonen is not

:04:08. > :04:12.participating in the next two events. Meanwhile, the scrap for

:04:13. > :04:14.second continues in the constructors championship with Mercedes and

:04:15. > :04:19.variety at loggerheads. Voters are not out of the running. Just 11

:04:20. > :04:25.points celebrating second and third. -- Ferrari. But the difference of

:04:26. > :04:26.June one and second is worth millions.

:04:27. > :04:28.-- Ferrari. But the difference of June one and second is The Clarion

:04:29. > :04:31.have been hogging the headlines with the announcement that they will be

:04:32. > :04:37.saying goodbye to Sergio Perez. It came as a shock to the Mexican.

:04:38. > :04:40.Sergio Perez has confirmed he is leaving McLaren at the end of this

:04:41. > :04:43.season. The Mexican has only been with McLaren for year as Jenson

:04:44. > :04:48.Button's team-mate but struggled this season with a highest finish of

:04:49. > :04:52.fifth place in the Indian Grand Prix. It was a big surprise. Why was

:04:53. > :05:03.not expecting it. Everything was done, and the team told me the die

:05:04. > :05:08.was good. They believed in the job they could do but all of a sudden,

:05:09. > :05:13.it changed. And it was a big surprise. What reason did they give

:05:14. > :05:17.you? I have not had the chance to speak to them in person. I do not

:05:18. > :05:22.know the reasons. Orlando is that the decision is taken and the need

:05:23. > :05:25.to move forward. You must feel aggrieved that your career is a

:05:26. > :05:29.victim of McLaren having a bad car and the worst season they have had

:05:30. > :05:34.for a long time. I will not make myself a victim, but it was a tough

:05:35. > :05:40.decision that I had to make last year because had other options. Big

:05:41. > :05:45.teams were interested in having me. When I had the opportunity with

:05:46. > :05:54.McLaren, I did not think twice. Will not regret. I think have a lot to

:05:55. > :05:58.offer to my team. Any team that will have me. I'm already speaking to

:05:59. > :06:04.teams. I believe I have some options. At some point, I have to

:06:05. > :06:08.make a decision. I've really hope that I find the right option for my

:06:09. > :06:17.career. I will not stay in Formula one just to be here. I need to find

:06:18. > :06:22.a car where I can show that I can do the job. What are your thoughts on

:06:23. > :06:29.this scenario? Timing is not good for Sergio Perez. But for Magnusson,

:06:30. > :06:32.it is perfect. It puts Sergio in a difficult position. Not only is he

:06:33. > :06:37.being rejected by a top team but he is doing it at a difficult time in

:06:38. > :06:42.the year. Finding a suitable seat for him, to work towards victory,

:06:43. > :06:44.will be difficult. What does that do for his career? Does it reinforced

:06:45. > :06:49.the fact that they should not have signed him? It has been a failed

:06:50. > :06:53.experiment. You make decisions and at that time, you have not made a

:06:54. > :06:57.bad decision. It is only through hindsight that you can tell.

:06:58. > :07:03.Clearly, he did not outperform Jenson Button, which is key to what

:07:04. > :07:07.McLaren is looking for. Jenson is a terrific driver but he did not have

:07:08. > :07:11.the speed of Lewis Hamilton. So they're bringing in Kevin Magnusson

:07:12. > :07:16.and he is from the young driver programme. A great driver, and how

:07:17. > :07:20.do you see that going? He is only 21 so this will be a tough year for

:07:21. > :07:25.him. It is going to be a learning season, unquestionably. Remember,

:07:26. > :07:27.Lewis Hamilton started with McLaren and was part of the system for

:07:28. > :07:35.several years, as is Kevin Magnusson. He has Formula one in his

:07:36. > :07:39.DNA. His father raced for McLaren. He is not new to the sport. Despite

:07:40. > :07:43.the fact that he is 21, that is going to help. Had they the right

:07:44. > :07:50.line-up now, moving forward? It remains to be seen. I see Kevin is a

:07:51. > :07:54.strong driver for the future. They are in a period of transition for

:07:55. > :08:00.the move to Honda engines. Why not take the risk? Sergio Perez jams and

:08:01. > :08:01.it did not work out. Drivers are coming and going and even returning

:08:02. > :08:11.this week. Here is the round-up. As we heard, replacing Sergio Perez

:08:12. > :08:16.I'll be back with more in half an hour. McLaren next year is Kevin

:08:17. > :08:22.Magnusson, who carries a big reputation. Martin Whitmarsh is sure

:08:23. > :08:25.it is the right decision. Kevin has done a terrific job. He has

:08:26. > :08:30.convinced us that he is a champion of the future. It is very exciting

:08:31. > :08:36.to sign him. In the end, you have to make a decision as to who you think

:08:37. > :08:44.makes the best sense for the future of the business. William seven and

:08:45. > :08:51.their driver line-up for 2014. Felipe Massa will be joining bot as.

:08:52. > :09:00.We are both big fans of Williams. -- Bothas. I'm happy to be changing,

:09:01. > :09:08.happy to have a new part of my career here, and looking for at a

:09:09. > :09:12.lot. -- looking forward. I have a lot I can give. Astor Maldonado has

:09:13. > :09:20.not yet said where he will be driving but says he will definitely

:09:21. > :09:25.be still in the sport. -- Pastor. There are a lot of good options. The

:09:26. > :09:33.team is interested in having me. For sure, I will be in Formula one. Toro

:09:34. > :09:39.Rosso's you driver for next season has been using this week to get up

:09:40. > :09:46.to speed with the team. He made his first appearance in the first free

:09:47. > :09:51.practice. It is a big step for me. There is a lot more downforce speed.

:09:52. > :09:54.I'd feel like I'm ready for it. FIA election nominee, David Ward has

:09:55. > :09:58.announced he will not be running for the presidency after all. It means

:09:59. > :10:01.the current FIA rebbe present -- President is the only man still in

:10:02. > :10:09.the running. One of Britain's more successful open wheel racers, Dario

:10:10. > :10:16.Franchitti, has been forced to retire after a horrific crash. He

:10:17. > :10:21.won the Indy 504 times. Kimi Raikkonen will not be driving here

:10:22. > :10:25.or in Brazil. On Thursday, he had a back operation which means that his

:10:26. > :10:29.last appearance for Lotus was his short lived race at Abu Dhabi. How

:10:30. > :10:39.can Bergen Schumacher were both approached but turned them down. --

:10:40. > :10:46.Hoffenberg. David, Heikki Kovalainen in four Kimi Raikkonen. He will do a

:10:47. > :10:50.solid job. Absolutely. He is a solid driver. He has raced for Renault

:10:51. > :10:56.before, which is nowhere Lotus art. He has raised for McLaren. It makes

:10:57. > :11:01.sense. He is good but will he have a chance? He does not bring any money

:11:02. > :11:04.and he stated that. He is not looking for money and he will not

:11:05. > :11:09.consider himself as a paid driver. So where they are catering for him.

:11:10. > :11:13.At the moment, they have a lot of bills to pay, which goes against him

:11:14. > :11:19.getting a driver. Shall we look at how things are shaping up? This is

:11:20. > :11:24.what we know. We can see where the seeds are, but there are a lot of

:11:25. > :11:28.drivers. -- seats. We could see a lot of good talent not making it

:11:29. > :11:31.next year. More and more, there are a lot of good drivers looking for

:11:32. > :11:37.those seats and all seats are looking for money. They are pretty

:11:38. > :11:40.much saying to the managers, how much money does the driver bring and

:11:41. > :11:47.then we will consider putting him on the list. It is a sad scenario when

:11:48. > :11:52.you find drivers that are super talented that might not get a seat.

:11:53. > :11:59.How one has this been going on for? Since Formula one first raced 60

:12:00. > :12:02.years ago. It has always been the case that you need finance at some

:12:03. > :12:07.level. Whether it was an owner driver. Ayrton Senna brought money

:12:08. > :12:10.initially to drive with his team, as did Fernando Alonso. It is not

:12:11. > :12:15.unusual. But once they are established, you would expect them

:12:16. > :12:20.to not have to fund their own driver. And that is the difference

:12:21. > :12:23.we're seeing now. Yes. So some news from the practice sessions. Jenson

:12:24. > :12:27.Button got a grid penalty, which is unfortunate. It is but he overtook

:12:28. > :12:31.on a red flag. They acknowledged that there was no benefit, but the

:12:32. > :12:37.rules are the rules. Unfortunately, three places. You better go up to

:12:38. > :12:44.the commentary box and prepare for qualifying. And of course, Tom and

:12:45. > :13:04.Lee will be in the pit lane. Here is Q1.

:13:05. > :13:09.The session is under way here at the Circuit of the Americas, the green

:13:10. > :13:15.light is on at the end of the pit lane, Sergio Perez is into these

:13:16. > :13:18.final two races for McLaren, going into an important qualifying session

:13:19. > :13:22.to see who will end up on pole position and who ends up not doubt

:13:23. > :13:26.in this first part of qualifying. Sixth drivers will be knocked out,

:13:27. > :13:34.and amongst those is likely to be the two Marussias and the two

:13:35. > :13:37.caterer Massa. Not a lot of sitting around, because the tyre compounds

:13:38. > :13:43.that are being used are fairly conservative, and we might see quite

:13:44. > :13:48.a lot of laps during these segments. The harder of the two tyres, the

:13:49. > :13:54.further you go, the faster they go, partly because of the fuel load

:13:55. > :13:58.going down. The tyre gets better after two or three laps, because of

:13:59. > :14:05.the temperature, but then it is just the fuel coming down. You need to

:14:06. > :14:10.get 1:37.7 to get into the top 16. I am not sure many people will be able

:14:11. > :14:14.to achieve that on the harder of the two tyres. Initially probably going

:14:15. > :14:18.out on the harder tyre with the orange writing on the sidewalk. We

:14:19. > :14:25.will not see the white tyre until the last five minutes. That is true,

:14:26. > :14:29.if I was doing it to save the running around, I would have put the

:14:30. > :14:37.medium tyre one, go for one clean lap. That means you can use that set

:14:38. > :14:43.of tyres in Q2 as well, do a good time on them. On the tyre

:14:44. > :14:47.temperature thing, they get quicker, especially the prime tyre,

:14:48. > :14:51.why when they come out of the blankets is it such a challenge to

:14:52. > :14:54.maintain the temperature when we hear other circuits they are

:14:55. > :15:00.struggling to keep temperature out of the tyre? It is just the track

:15:01. > :15:04.temperature, 30 or 31 agrees. At the end of the day, when you come out of

:15:05. > :15:11.the blankets, when you get to the faster section, so much of that

:15:12. > :15:20.temperature... Is its new breaks? Not new, but different. That is Nico

:15:21. > :15:22.Rosberg telling the team off, most of the teams will have changed the

:15:23. > :15:27.brakes because you cannot change them after this session. You want

:15:28. > :15:30.your best package on. The track itself suck so much of the

:15:31. > :15:34.temperature out, they come out of the blankets at 100 degrees, but by

:15:35. > :15:40.the time they get to the first set of corners, they will be down to 50.

:15:41. > :15:44.Writes, thank you very much, a quick update from Tom in the pit lane, the

:15:45. > :15:50.breeze seems to have picked up a little bit since the cars were out

:15:51. > :15:54.this morning. It is very blustery, it is a headwind into turn one, and

:15:55. > :15:58.we have been talking about temperatures, just to say that the

:15:59. > :16:02.track temperature is about eight degrees more than during final

:16:03. > :16:05.practice this morning, a lot less than yesterday, so the teams are

:16:06. > :16:10.expecting what we saw this morning to be more representative coming

:16:11. > :16:16.into this qualifying session. Let's see what Pastor Maldonado has done

:16:17. > :16:22.here, my goodness, a big sideways moment right in the fast sequence of

:16:23. > :16:27.corners there, very tricky. Well, that is one of the shocking things

:16:28. > :16:32.for the balance of that car. My goodness, look at that! Completely

:16:33. > :16:37.misreading the closing speed of the car behind, trying to pull off line

:16:38. > :16:40.to allow him to overtake. He inadvertently squeezed him up

:16:41. > :16:44.against the apex. Going back to the Williams, a total lack of confidence

:16:45. > :16:49.in the rear stability of the car, and you are committing to those

:16:50. > :16:54.high-speed corners. I have always maintained a Grand Prix car comes

:16:55. > :16:57.alive over 100 mph, that is when you feel the downforce on the

:16:58. > :17:00.confidence, and you expect the car to be slightly under steering

:17:01. > :17:06.towards speed, much more stable, more attacking balance for a driver

:17:07. > :17:10.to have. Serious issues for Maldonado. On board with Lewis

:17:11. > :17:17.Hamilton. The lap times are relatively slow at this point. Yes,

:17:18. > :17:25.the track looks slow. Looking at the times from this morning, the quick

:17:26. > :17:29.guys were in the one point 36... They are not going to be running

:17:30. > :17:32.lots of you will hear. There was a support race between free practice

:17:33. > :17:36.and this qualifying session getting under way, and the particular

:17:37. > :17:39.support race was using different tyres, and they could well have

:17:40. > :17:43.found themselves in a situation where it has picked up on that

:17:44. > :17:48.Pirelli rubber that has been impregnated into the tarmac, and now

:17:49. > :17:52.they are having to go through the process again of putting that rubber

:17:53. > :17:56.back onto the surface. They are dealing with quite gusty conditions

:17:57. > :18:01.as well, which is never good. The air speed across the front wing is

:18:02. > :18:03.less affected than the rear wing. As they go around this anticlockwise

:18:04. > :18:08.circuit, in and around the gusting wind, a bit of elevation here, we

:18:09. > :18:12.are not far from the local airport, sitting on the hill, and you get

:18:13. > :18:17.that view of the run-up to turn one, it is quite a climb, actually. You

:18:18. > :18:22.would make sure you had your trainers on for the walk up there!

:18:23. > :18:25.No doubt about it, I did a track walk the other day with Gary, as

:18:26. > :18:32.Sebastian Vettel came running pastors on that occasion with his

:18:33. > :18:37.trainer, a final bit of exercise before the weekend began. -- running

:18:38. > :18:40.past us. You do not see them so often, Sebastian Vettel does it

:18:41. > :18:44.quite frequently. I wonder how his lap time compares on foot relative

:18:45. > :18:49.to the others! He has not been out of the pits yet, Alonso is fastest,

:18:50. > :18:55.but the lap times are not looking very quick. Lewis Hamilton does a

:18:56. > :19:00.1:39.1, he goes fastest with that, then Nico Rosberg comes out of the

:19:01. > :19:04.final corner and is slower, 1:39.9, so very much lower, even though they

:19:05. > :19:08.are using the harder of the tyres. The difference seems to be around

:19:09. > :19:13.eight tenths of a second, so we are not looking at a huge jump in lap

:19:14. > :19:22.time between the hard and medium. That was Ron Dennis that we saw

:19:23. > :19:27.there. Shopping! -- shocking. It seems to be similar for everyone,

:19:28. > :19:33.hopefully the option is better. I think it is the tailwind in sector

:19:34. > :19:39.one and two. OK, we have to be careful. Really good to hear that

:19:40. > :19:41.little discussion, this is an interesting swivelling camera on

:19:42. > :19:47.board the front of the Williams of Valtteri Bottas, watching the right

:19:48. > :19:51.front... In fact, the left front wheel as they would normally look at

:19:52. > :19:57.it, not swivelling on this occasion, but we might get some different

:19:58. > :20:02.views from that camera. We have put Valtteri Bottas quickest at this

:20:03. > :20:05.point in the session, Nico Hulkenberg was also very fast in the

:20:06. > :20:10.Sauber, which is why he is feeling the need to get on the radio and

:20:11. > :20:14.tail is team out it is shocking that the car has been transformed. The

:20:15. > :20:17.track is a living thing, these cars do respond to wind conditions and

:20:18. > :20:23.track temperature, and as I say, the amount of rubber on the service, so

:20:24. > :20:28.you have to just move with the time. As Romain Grosjean goes fastest...

:20:29. > :20:32.Seven tenths down on what Kovalainen does, reasonably respectable first

:20:33. > :20:38.run, a little bit of information from race control that because we

:20:39. > :20:40.saw running into each other nearly worth Gutierrez and Maldonado, and

:20:41. > :20:48.that will be investigated after the session. New tyres on Webber's Karl,

:20:49. > :20:51.but still the hajj tyre compound. On board now with Jenson Button as he

:20:52. > :20:56.heads towards the end of the straight, no locking up under

:20:57. > :21:05.braking. Very over steering at low speed. We have got to work out why

:21:06. > :21:11.its feels so different. Probably a turn too much front wing. I think

:21:12. > :21:17.everybody is on the same page, track conditions have changed. That is

:21:18. > :21:21.what everyone is reporting back. There is Sebastian Vettel onto the

:21:22. > :21:26.track on the hard compound, Red Bull feeling confident that they can get

:21:27. > :21:30.through on this tyre. The cut-off time that we were looking at from

:21:31. > :21:35.practice this morning is going to be quite different, a slower time than

:21:36. > :21:40.we were expecting. At the moment the fastest sector time is Valtteri

:21:41. > :21:45.Bottas, impressive, the Williams, they have changed the back end of

:21:46. > :21:49.the car, they have got away from the exhaust blowing effect, and it seems

:21:50. > :21:52.to be working for them. Tom, they have been experimenting with

:21:53. > :21:58.different setups, but I think they are both running the same now.

:21:59. > :22:01.Absolutely right, the same strategy, but I wanted to talk about what is

:22:02. > :22:05.going on at the other end of the pit lane, brilliant strategy by Red Bull

:22:06. > :22:09.to be putting both cars out now, because it is very busy in the pit

:22:10. > :22:14.lane, everyone is putting the medium tyre on, and the track is clear

:22:15. > :22:17.apart from those two guys. It is hard to believe, I know, when the

:22:18. > :22:22.track is more than five kilometres long, but traffic was a serious

:22:23. > :22:27.concern during Q1, because you cannot overtake in sector one, and

:22:28. > :22:30.as a result you really want some clear track, and there goes one of

:22:31. > :22:35.the Mercedes disappearing out on the medium tyre. We are riding with Mark

:22:36. > :22:43.Webber through turn six. And now up the hill.

:22:44. > :22:50.We are just seeing, as he comes down towards a crucial braking area here,

:22:51. > :22:53.onto the long straight, trying to be early on the power. One of the

:22:54. > :22:57.longest race in Formula One, they get a bit of a launch downhill

:22:58. > :23:03.before you see the slight rise and they think as they approach down to

:23:04. > :23:07.turn 12, just under 200 mph when they hits the brakes. They will shed

:23:08. > :23:13.speed down to about 50 mph at the apex, the second-tier left-hander.

:23:14. > :23:18.Very on the throttle, which is a sort of feature of this Red Bull,

:23:19. > :23:26.and then into this more complex sequence, 13 and 14. A long bit of

:23:27. > :23:32.overseer into 15, he lost a bit of speed there, and momentum into

:23:33. > :23:38.16-18, all linked together. It should really be called one corner.

:23:39. > :23:43.Through 19, left, using all of the track and a bit more before

:23:44. > :23:49.approaching the last corner. This is likely to be the fastest lap,

:23:50. > :23:53.1:38.4, and his team-mate is also on a lap right now, not quite as quick

:23:54. > :23:58.in the first sector, Sebastian Vettel, so we will see what he does.

:23:59. > :24:03.Mark Webber may try to do two quick laps, but Webber is fastest from

:24:04. > :24:09.Grosjean. In the drop zone, Ricciardo, Van der Garde, Bianchi,

:24:10. > :24:13.Pic, Chilton, and at the moment Sebastian Vettel, but that will

:24:14. > :24:16.change. We go on board with the thermal imaging camera, it should be

:24:17. > :24:21.plenty enough to put him right near the top, maybe slightly quicker than

:24:22. > :24:26.Grosjean, around second or third place by the looks of things if the

:24:27. > :24:31.rest of the lap goes well. He seems to be very gentle with throttle

:24:32. > :24:36.application, almost like this is just as starter for ten, rather than

:24:37. > :24:43.his all out attempt. He does go second, Red Bull 1-2, a fractional

:24:44. > :24:49.difference between them. Now, let's see what Jean-Eric Vergne does, he

:24:50. > :24:52.goes fifth on the softer tyre, Toro Rosso definitely having difficulty

:24:53. > :24:56.in making sure of getting into Q2, but that looked like a better lap

:24:57. > :25:01.from him. We are going one seconds slower than we thought we would be

:25:02. > :25:06.in that cut-off time. Let's see what Maldonado does on his soft tyre run,

:25:07. > :25:10.a big lock-up, look how wide he goes. He should get another

:25:11. > :25:15.opportunity, still three minutes to go. Ricciardo moves up to seventh,

:25:16. > :25:21.Lewis Hamilton now goes fastest of everybody on his run on the medium

:25:22. > :25:26.compound, the softer of the two. 1:37.9, but it is still nine tenths

:25:27. > :25:31.of a second slower than he went this morning on a similar tyre. Gutierrez

:25:32. > :25:35.goes second fastest, Sauber looking quite promising this weekend.

:25:36. > :25:39.Hulkenberg was fast in free practice, and that has been

:25:40. > :25:43.confirmed by Gutierrez winding himself up into a lap on the option

:25:44. > :25:48.tyre, exploiting the extra performance from that of rubber.

:25:49. > :25:52.Paul di Resta goes 11, and Hulkenberg is only six compared to

:25:53. > :25:56.Gutierrez's second, but a fractional difference, Felipe Massa is 13th, a

:25:57. > :26:00.worry for Ferrari when you think about trying to get both cars into

:26:01. > :26:05.the top ten in the next part of qualifying, because currently Alonso

:26:06. > :26:10.was ten and Massa at 30. Jenson Button is near the drop zone

:26:11. > :26:14.currently, only 16. Maldonado and Sutil are in the drop zone, along

:26:15. > :26:23.with Van der Garde, Pic, Bianchi and children. Both Caterhams ahead of

:26:24. > :26:27.the Marussias. Heikki Kovalainen also needs to find some time, only

:26:28. > :26:34.15th at the moment. Button goes seventh, 1:38.5, quicker than

:26:35. > :26:39.Rosberg, he should be relatively happy with that. Kovalainen goes

:26:40. > :26:45.sixth, 1:38.3, and that should be enough to get through to the next

:26:46. > :26:46.part. A tidy lap from Kovalainen, on board with Adrian Sutil, traffic

:26:47. > :26:54.ahead. He might have picked up a little bit

:26:55. > :27:01.of dust as he goes offline to find his way through, that was into turn

:27:02. > :27:05.11. Down the long back straight, this is one of the DRS zone is for

:27:06. > :27:11.the race. And in qualifying, of course they will be able to run it,

:27:12. > :27:15.just bouncing of the limiter. He shared all that speed, pulling a

:27:16. > :27:19.spike of just over five GIs they decelerate into that corner. And

:27:20. > :27:26.then they get into the Disneyland section, lots of twisty corners. He

:27:27. > :27:30.is only just up on what he needs to make sure of getting into the top

:27:31. > :27:35.16, he is struggling. A bit of traffic ahead, not comfortable for

:27:36. > :27:41.Adrian Sutil. He might get one more lap in. Max Chilton in the Marussia

:27:42. > :27:47.ahead of them is on a lap, he does not have to get out of the way.

:27:48. > :27:52.Sutil, not a clean lap, two bits of traffic, do not expect this to be a

:27:53. > :27:57.beautiful one, 17 at the moment. He has time to do another lap, but

:27:58. > :28:03.there is more traffic around, and he has gone way too deep into turn one.

:28:04. > :28:09.Pastor Maldonado may have failed, although he has another lap on the

:28:10. > :28:14.softer tyres. 1:39.3, compared to Valtteri... Sutil trying to rejoin,

:28:15. > :28:18.we said it was very wide. He will definitely not make it through this

:28:19. > :28:23.part of qualifying. Bottas is fourth, the other Williams is fine,

:28:24. > :28:26.but Maldonado is nowhere. You do not normally see a big difference

:28:27. > :28:30.between the two, but there is a massive difference at the moment.

:28:31. > :28:36.The chequered flag is out, the last opportunity for these guys, can

:28:37. > :28:40.Ricciardo move up? He moves up to 13th, faster than Alonso for the

:28:41. > :28:44.moment, but Alonso is still going around. Sutil and Maldonado of the

:28:45. > :28:49.two in the drop zone, and it could well be that they stay there. We saw

:28:50. > :28:53.the mistake from Sutil, we will keep an eye on Maldonado. His first

:28:54. > :28:59.sector is not great, not an improvement, Massa cruising, he is

:29:00. > :29:02.in dangerous territory if Sutil or Maldonado improved. Sutil is not

:29:03. > :29:06.doing anything, he has backed right out of it, and Maldonado is the only

:29:07. > :29:09.want to keep an eye on. It looks like he was wiggling at the steering

:29:10. > :29:16.wheel, checking if something is damaged. Yes, he is pulling off, so

:29:17. > :29:22.did he have an issue into turn one? Yes, something went very wrong,

:29:23. > :29:26.Bottas has gone fastest of anybody on a 1:37.8, Williams driver Val

:29:27. > :29:33.Valtteri Bottas, an astonishing performance, but keep an eye on

:29:34. > :29:43.Maldonado, who could yet push Massa out. We are waiting for him to

:29:44. > :29:49.complete the lap. Maldonado... He hasn't done it. He has failed. He

:29:50. > :29:54.has not done it. On board with Sutil. It almost looked like he had

:29:55. > :30:01.some sort of failure. He did not even attempt to make the corner.

:30:02. > :30:05.Disappointment for the Force India team. Paul Di Resta his 14th.

:30:06. > :30:09.Clearly the car is not working so well at this point in the session.

:30:10. > :30:13.Sutil is out of the car. Felipe Massa just making it through to the

:30:14. > :30:19.second part of qualifying. That was close. It Maldonado has repeated --

:30:20. > :30:23.had repeated his team-mate's performance, Felipe Massa would

:30:24. > :30:27.definitely have been out. But for some reason, there is 1.5 seconds

:30:28. > :30:32.between Valtteri Bottas and Pastor Maldonado. That is an astonishing

:30:33. > :30:36.difference. Whether there is a story to be told, we will have to find out

:30:37. > :30:42.later. But out of qualifying already. We have lost one of the

:30:43. > :30:45.Force India's. One Williams in the shape of Pastor Maldonado. Claire

:30:46. > :30:50.Williams is having a word with his father, to discuss what has gone on

:30:51. > :30:56.there. At the Lorenz, Giedo van der Garde, the fastest of the young

:30:57. > :31:01.qualifiers. -- at the lower end. Ahead of Jules Bianchi. Only a small

:31:02. > :31:11.difference between Caterham and Marussia. Max Chilton struggling.

:31:12. > :31:20.Confirmation of those we have lost from Q1.

:31:21. > :31:27.Bad luck. Talk is through that incident with Gutierrez. It was

:31:28. > :31:32.quite close. He did not look at his mirror. You looks like you were

:31:33. > :31:37.pretty uncomfortable in the car. Especially with the rear. Tell us

:31:38. > :31:45.about your problems. I never find a good balance. Throughout the

:31:46. > :31:50.weekend, it was hard, especially because the tyres were not working.

:31:51. > :31:56.They were completely wrong, with temperatures and pressure. I've

:31:57. > :32:00.found it inconsistent. Do you feel as though the team are not

:32:01. > :32:05.supporting you? I do not know, to be honest. That is a question for the

:32:06. > :32:09.team. Buttery Bottas, his team-mate, was fastest in that

:32:10. > :32:15.session. Let's see how he gets on in Q2. -- Valtteri Bottas.

:32:16. > :32:19.Likely that the normal frontrunners will be showing what they can do a

:32:20. > :32:23.bit more in this one. To get into the top ten, it is going to be

:32:24. > :32:28.tight. Jean-Eric Vergne is the first on track. The Toro Rossos will be

:32:29. > :32:32.struggling to get into the top ten. They were not at the bottom of the

:32:33. > :32:40.list. It was the Ferraris, Alonso and Felipe Massa. They are going to

:32:41. > :32:44.have to be discussing things quite carefully to get those Ferraris into

:32:45. > :32:50.the next part of qualifying. But news of you got for us, Tom? I have

:32:51. > :32:54.been catching up with the guys at Williams after Valtteri Bottas's

:32:55. > :32:59.fantastic lap. Ask them what they were saying. Pastor Maldonado says

:33:00. > :33:03.the setup is hopeless, and Valtteri Bottas says the car is performing

:33:04. > :33:07.better than ever. Contrasting fortunes, with the same car. There

:33:08. > :33:12.is a new floor on Valtteri Bottas's card, but they think they were

:33:13. > :33:19.running it in both car, as you say, so no difference. -- both cars. When

:33:20. > :33:25.we talk about the same setup, everything is machine tools, and

:33:26. > :33:28.Grand Prix cars are beautifully samples of the fine details of

:33:29. > :33:33.engineering. But there will always be very small margins of difference.

:33:34. > :33:38.And a man that can talk more about that than I can is Barry Anderson.

:33:39. > :33:43.The thing about it, everything is done, adjusted to suit the driver's

:33:44. > :33:49.style. And lots of drivers do not like the rear to be nervous. When

:33:50. > :33:52.you have windy conditions, the car will be over steering on some

:33:53. > :33:57.corners and on the steering on others. That is the worst condition

:33:58. > :34:01.because it is not the wind that makes you lose the lap times, it is

:34:02. > :34:04.the mistakes you make. So maybe Bottas has been able to live with

:34:05. > :34:10.more than Maldonado? A huge difference. Yes. And I think there

:34:11. > :34:14.is some confidence because the class is set for next year and he knows

:34:15. > :34:18.what he is doing. Maldonado is the opposite because he does not know

:34:19. > :34:22.where he's going. Riding with the Jean Eric Vergne. Let's see what

:34:23. > :34:29.time he does in this early part of qualifying. He does minutes max

:34:30. > :34:37.38.6. A huge difference in lack time. -- lap time. It does make a

:34:38. > :34:43.drama, a big difference. In the earlier session, Jean Eric Vergne

:34:44. > :34:50.did 38.8. A little bit quicker. You would expect that. It is so

:34:51. > :34:55.unpredictable, the lap time that you need to get through this. I've would

:34:56. > :35:07.stick with a mid-37. It will come to you. If you get one good lap, and

:35:08. > :35:10.the windows down, you're good. Hamilton is fastest. Bottas second.

:35:11. > :35:16.Gutierrez is moving up the order. We are seeing quite a lot of changes. A

:35:17. > :35:20.big change for Kovalainen. Into Q2, you would expect that in the Lotus,

:35:21. > :35:25.but standing for Kimi Raikkonen, he has to try to be at the top ten.

:35:26. > :35:30.That is going to be more difficult. The pressure is on. He is joining

:35:31. > :35:35.the party late. As we mentioned, in the earlier part of the show, he

:35:36. > :35:39.knows the team from the days of Renault, but the cars have moved on.

:35:40. > :35:43.It has been helped by the fact that he has had some runs with Caterham.

:35:44. > :35:50.He is familiar with their procedures. He will be aware of how

:35:51. > :35:55.to drive the power of a Renault. The engines are sealed. There is no

:35:56. > :36:00.difference between that of the Caterham or the Red Bull or the

:36:01. > :36:04.Lotus team. Once again, a disappointed look from David

:36:05. > :36:10.Vanzetti, the test driver. Paul Di Resta, he may get in the top ten but

:36:11. > :36:14.Force India, it does not look like they have the speed. It has been a

:36:15. > :36:18.while since they have been in the top ten. The last time he got into

:36:19. > :36:21.Q3 was Belgium. That was the damp conditions. We thought he was going

:36:22. > :36:25.to be on pole position. Adrian Sutil, the last time he was in the

:36:26. > :36:35.top ten was the British Grand Prix but he is already out. The rest goes

:36:36. > :36:42.second. -- Di Resta. One: 38.1. He will be recently happy. I think we

:36:43. > :36:47.need to see them into the mid-37s to be safe. Jenson Button had a problem

:36:48. > :36:52.in Q2 last year at this point, which prevented him from getting into the

:36:53. > :36:55.top ten. That was with a fast car. This time, it might be more

:36:56. > :36:59.difficult to get there in terms of pace. The McLaren has been looking

:37:00. > :37:05.reasonable. He was sixth fastest this morning. We will join him out

:37:06. > :37:12.of turn 12, into 13. That is a short acceleration. And Darren into the

:37:13. > :37:20.awkward entry to 15. Very long, shallow apex. Into an exciting

:37:21. > :37:29.corner. The build speed, flat out through this sequence. And then

:37:30. > :37:32.turned 19, keeping it nice and tidy. A bit of a lock-up, but you will see

:37:33. > :37:39.him release the brake pedal and allow the tyre to run. You think he

:37:40. > :37:45.might have found a bit more, but he is slower than Kovalainen and

:37:46. > :37:49.Alonso. Closer to home, for Sergio Perez. Lots of Mexican fancier. And

:37:50. > :37:54.even more will be pouring in tomorrow. 58,000 people here for the

:37:55. > :37:59.Friday, which is an impressive number. And hopefully we will see a

:38:00. > :38:02.full house on Sunday as well. A tremendous amount of support for

:38:03. > :38:06.Formula one in the United States, even if it is not as well recognised

:38:07. > :38:10.as some of the other sports here. Let's see how the lap completes.

:38:11. > :38:15.Button is seventh. Where is Sergio Perez at this point? He goes second.

:38:16. > :38:19.That was a good lap by him. An excellent lap indeed, putting in

:38:20. > :38:23.just a fraction slower than Lewis Hamilton. Wonder what Martin

:38:24. > :38:27.Whitmarsh is thinking as Perez delivers an impressive effort. We

:38:28. > :38:29.have a little way to go in Q2 to see whether he can continue that and

:38:30. > :38:38.outqualified Jenson Button. A reminder, Boston has a penalty, so

:38:39. > :38:42.wherever he qualifies, plus three places for tomorrow's grid. --

:38:43. > :38:49.Button. Romain Grosjean, coming out of the last corner. Where does this

:38:50. > :38:57.put him? 37.5, comfortably through. Great effort. The Frenchman has had

:38:58. > :39:01.a good sequence of results recently. Four consecutive top four finishes,

:39:02. > :39:04.three on the podium. An excellent effort. He has qualified third on

:39:05. > :39:09.the grid on three occasions this year. Can he do better than that? It

:39:10. > :39:11.will be a tall order because the Red Bulls are looking fancier and it

:39:12. > :39:23.looks as though Red Bull could make it another 1-2 on the grid.

:39:24. > :39:28.Hulkenberg, fast on the first sector, Mark Webber faster on the

:39:29. > :39:32.second. Alonso has gone fastest now in that first sector. The track is

:39:33. > :39:37.evolving as we go through this qualifying session. One corner to go

:39:38. > :39:41.for Mark Webber. One single lap to get him through to the next part of

:39:42. > :39:46.qualifying. Mark Webber goes across the line, fastest. 37.3, pushing

:39:47. > :39:55.Grosjean the two seconds. Hamilton and third. Alonso on a good lap. --

:39:56. > :39:58.pushing Grosjean into second. We need to keep an eye on the Ferrari

:39:59. > :40:11.as we watch Hulkenberg here. Very wide on to 19. -- Turner 19. At the

:40:12. > :40:16.moment, years 15th. -- he is 15th. Remember, you're locked up into the

:40:17. > :40:22.last turn. There is more pace in the Sauber. He is looking good -- it is

:40:23. > :40:28.looking good for Sauber this afternoon. Bottas has gone second,

:40:29. > :40:34.between the Red Bull and the Lotus. Where has this come from? You know

:40:35. > :40:37.what is impressive? You can see what the Williams team expect. Even

:40:38. > :40:41.though they are having a difficult season in Formula one, no one is

:40:42. > :40:46.jumping around, even though that is probably enough to get him through.

:40:47. > :40:53.They are all very focused on watching the clock and watching

:40:54. > :40:58.their man perform. And Rosberg, on the 11th. He is in danger. Sebastian

:40:59. > :41:04.Vettel is about to go quickest. And it is a 1-2 for Red Bull. Alonso

:41:05. > :41:10.looks safe to get into the top ten. We worried about that. There was a

:41:11. > :41:16.big difference in performance. McLaren decided to nip in on the

:41:17. > :41:21.side of the Red Bull. I heard Vettel ran up against the rebel limiter,

:41:22. > :41:32.which would have cost in some lap time. -- cost him some lap time. And

:41:33. > :41:43.you can see it from the camera. Watch for the tyre lock. He got to

:41:44. > :41:47.the apex, but he had a bit of a lock-up. Romain Grosjean said that

:41:48. > :41:51.quick lap but maybe they feel that it is not enough. He's to have to

:41:52. > :41:55.back out of this one. It is not going to be a great lap. That was

:41:56. > :42:03.down into 15. The corner where Bottas locked up. That was down at

:42:04. > :42:10.turn 12, sorry. Enough time to go for it again. That is the race

:42:11. > :42:14.engineer for Romain Grosjean. They are working very effectively

:42:15. > :42:19.together. But that little mistake... There is time for another lap. On

:42:20. > :42:23.board with Jean Eric Vergne. I think Vergne and Ricciardo, at the moment

:42:24. > :42:33.they are in the top nine but Vergne is outside of the drugs on. But

:42:34. > :42:41.we're going to see some changes in the last few seconds of Q2. -- the

:42:42. > :42:46.drop zone. There is no doubt about the pace of the Red Bulls. Alonso

:42:47. > :42:50.was back in the pits, happy with what he has done. He is confident

:42:51. > :42:59.that he has done enough to get into the final part of qualifying. by

:43:00. > :43:04.contrast, Felipe Massa is in 15th. Last year, Ferrari took a voluntary

:43:05. > :43:12.year box penalty to drop Massa behind. -- gearbox. And he is in the

:43:13. > :43:18.first sector with Rosberg up ahead. It gives you an indication, 26.8,

:43:19. > :43:23.half a second slower than his team-mate. It is going to be very

:43:24. > :43:27.difficult for Massa to make it through. Keeping an eye on all of

:43:28. > :43:31.these as they try to improve. Ricciardo is still in ninth, in

:43:32. > :43:36.danger. We could see some improvements from Rosberg and

:43:37. > :43:40.Kovalainen. Is Kovalainen going to be able to get into the top ten?

:43:41. > :43:46.Standing in for Kimi Raikkonen. We are on board with Gutierrez, another

:43:47. > :43:50.Mexican with home support. Still in his first year of Formula one. Will

:43:51. > :43:56.he get a second year? We do not know. It is all to be decided. Good

:43:57. > :44:01.effort, but will that hold him in there? Paul Di Resta, down into 11th

:44:02. > :44:05.place. Sebastien Button -- Jenson Button is out of the top ten and

:44:06. > :44:09.that means that will not be approved. He has a three place

:44:10. > :44:14.penalty as well, don't forget. Perez has outqualified Jenson Button as a

:44:15. > :44:19.key Kovalainen tries desperately to get into the top ten. He has gone

:44:20. > :44:24.ninth. Kovalainen is ninth. Will that be enough for him to stay

:44:25. > :44:30.there? Across the line, we're seeing the Mercedes go through. Rosberg is

:44:31. > :44:34.not in it. Rosberg has failed. Perez stays ninth. A great effort by

:44:35. > :44:38.Sergio Perez and Rosberg is out. That is a huge surprise. Hamilton

:44:39. > :44:44.has made it in and Massa is out. Alonso has gone through in third,

:44:45. > :44:49.but Felipe Massa, all the way down in 15th. Nowhere near getting in the

:44:50. > :44:57.top ten. What a mix we're seeing among the times. A few surprises, no

:44:58. > :45:02.doubt about it, Daniel Ricciardo ended up 11 is, Di Resta was always

:45:03. > :45:06.struggling, Button outqualified by his team-mates, and he has a penalty

:45:07. > :45:12.to deal with. Rosberg out of the top ten, Felipe Massa joining in, and

:45:13. > :45:16.also out is Jean-Eric Vergne. Jenson Button not making it through

:45:17. > :45:21.to the top ten shoot out, an unlucky 13th, and he's talking to leave. A

:45:22. > :45:29.pretty tough day out there what were you struggling with most? Not being

:45:30. > :45:34.quick enough! Yeah, the car feels very difficult. The problem is, this

:45:35. > :45:38.happened last race as well, I cannot find the balance, the grid or any

:45:39. > :45:42.thing in qualifying. All weekend the car has been quick, I have been

:45:43. > :45:45.quick and it is not there in qualifying. And you have a penalty

:45:46. > :45:51.for tomorrow, will that be even tougher? It will be over at three

:45:52. > :45:57.o'clock, that is the positive! And understandably disappointed Jenson

:45:58. > :46:02.Button, and Ricciardo, Di Resta, Massa and Vergne join him on the

:46:03. > :46:05.sidelines. Here is Q3. Time for the pole position shoot

:46:06. > :46:11.out, we will see whether anybody can get close to the Red Bulls, fastest

:46:12. > :46:15.in the second part of qualifying, but do not forget that Val Valtteri

:46:16. > :46:25.Bottas was fastest in Q1, and he did another great job in Q2. This time

:46:26. > :46:34.seems to have come out of nowhere. Everything is coming towards him,

:46:35. > :46:47.and this whole session has been a flash in the pan. The has been quick

:46:48. > :46:51.all the time. We were talking about how this feels like a damp session.

:46:52. > :46:56.The drivers are reacting to the track conditions that are delivering

:46:57. > :47:00.the times. Kovalainen has done a great job. If he ends up tenth on

:47:01. > :47:04.the grid, that is all they could have asked of him. But when you look

:47:05. > :47:10.at Hulkenberg, Gutierrez and Bottas, and the want to drop doubt, Button,

:47:11. > :47:15.Rosberg, Massa, what are the top teams doing? They are being trampled

:47:16. > :47:22.on by small guys. I love it, it is really good! Bold predictions? I

:47:23. > :47:25.thought 35.5 would do it, but I do not think so now. If you get the

:47:26. > :47:30.wind right, if you get the one second when the wind is not gusting,

:47:31. > :47:34.you have a chance, but it is too critical. We will see what they

:47:35. > :47:39.deliver, already on track we have six cars, riding with Mark Webber.

:47:40. > :47:44.We will see what they can do. While we wait for them to build up, there

:47:45. > :47:51.is a satellite delay from me in terms of the information coming in

:47:52. > :47:54.my ear, going to Scotland and registering in my brain! I liked

:47:55. > :48:00.what you said, the shoot out in Texas, I am slow but I got there in

:48:01. > :48:06.the end! Was that planned? It was not, actually, no! Let's see how

:48:07. > :48:09.Mark Webber gets on, his second to last chance to get a pole position

:48:10. > :48:12.in Formula One, and he has been right on the money in terms of

:48:13. > :48:18.qualifying pace in the last three Grands Prix, two poles in the last

:48:19. > :48:22.three. He is in a comfortable place, coming to the end of its Grand Prix

:48:23. > :48:28.career, a great career, some great drives through the years, but this

:48:29. > :48:32.Pirelli era and the Red Bull era have certainly been dominated by his

:48:33. > :48:35.team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, no question that Mark has great speed,

:48:36. > :48:40.and he will continue that in his sports car career, but he can match

:48:41. > :48:44.Sebastian in qualifying, but he tends to struggle to maintain the

:48:45. > :48:48.tyre management over the length of a Grand Prix. He will be doing his

:48:49. > :48:52.best, and we wish him well as he embarks on what could be one of the

:48:53. > :48:56.last two pole positions he can aim for. He has admitted that the

:48:57. > :49:07.tickler leave the soft tyre is the one that sometimes hurts him. Tom,

:49:08. > :49:09.what have you got? I am looking at Fernando Alonso who is sitting

:49:10. > :49:14.quietly waiting to go out, and I just wanted to comment, the third

:49:15. > :49:21.fastest time in Q2, what a sensational performance from him,

:49:22. > :49:25.still injured from that 28G impact that he suffered in Abu Dhabi. He

:49:26. > :49:29.was telling me that he is still in a lot of pain, he cannot sleep

:49:30. > :49:34.properly at the moment, he is still not getting enough blood to his

:49:35. > :49:38.brain, that is how he described it. I do not how that affects a racing

:49:39. > :49:45.driver, but he is showing a lot of bottle to do what he is doing.

:49:46. > :49:49.I could say so many inappropriate things right now! Mark Webber is

:49:50. > :49:56.about to open his lap, a fantastic overhead shot, a great view of the

:49:57. > :50:03.sector, the Disneyland area, a very complex series of corners, and we

:50:04. > :50:08.can see Mr Webber out to see his boy perform. Sebastian bringing his

:50:09. > :50:11.tyres in here. I think Mark Webber has got quite a lot of family here

:50:12. > :50:16.to sort of celebrates towards the end of his career, just one more

:50:17. > :50:21.race to go. Let's see what Sebastian Vettel can do, pole position last

:50:22. > :50:24.year, beaten in the latter stages of the race by Lewis Hamilton, wants to

:50:25. > :50:28.make up for that this time and continue his remarkable winning

:50:29. > :50:34.sequence, braking yet more records. Let's see what he does on this last

:50:35. > :50:38.part of qualifying, still over five minutes to go, let's see what the

:50:39. > :50:44.first time is. Slightly slower than Mark Webber, 1:36.8, but plenty of

:50:45. > :50:49.time to improve on that. Grosjean has gone third fastest, Perez

:50:50. > :50:53.fourth, Kovalainen fifth fastest in the Lotus. As you say, a good effort

:50:54. > :50:58.by Heikki Kovalainen to make it into the top ten, both of the Lotus is in

:50:59. > :51:02.the top ten, just the one Williams, the one Ferrari and only one

:51:03. > :51:07.Mercedes, a surprise, because we have both Hulkenberg and Gutierrez

:51:08. > :51:11.also over. Both Mexican drivers are in the top ten, which is going to

:51:12. > :51:14.cause some excitement in the grandstands around here, I can tell

:51:15. > :51:19.you, because they have tremendous support he in Texas. Claire

:51:20. > :51:23.Williams, the acting team principal when Sir Frank is not in town, but

:51:24. > :51:28.he is here watching the great performance from Valtteri Bottas.

:51:29. > :51:33.Remarkable, the pace he has been able to find in that car, all sorts

:51:34. > :51:38.of last-minute technical changes, and we joined the reverse camera

:51:39. > :51:42.view, rather swanky turned towards the apex, showing the driver's view,

:51:43. > :51:47.just a little bit lower than the driver's view, but nonetheless you

:51:48. > :51:51.get an indication of what the scenery looks like from within the

:51:52. > :51:54.cockpit. Pastor Maldonado, meanwhile, has been telling

:51:55. > :51:59.journalists, you will have to ask the team why I am so slow. That

:52:00. > :52:02.relationship has dissolved completely between Maldonado and

:52:03. > :52:05.Williams, but we are going to keep an eye on Valtteri Bottas and see

:52:06. > :52:10.what he can do. He qualified third in Canada, his standout performance

:52:11. > :52:15.of the year in damp conditions. In the dry, the best he has done is

:52:16. > :52:19.13th in Japan, so he will obviously improve on that, this will be his

:52:20. > :52:25.best qualifying in dry conditions. But how far up the top ten can he

:52:26. > :52:28.go? Based on the first two parts of qualifying, he has a chance of being

:52:29. > :52:34.in the top five, which would be remarkable, but he is guaranteed to

:52:35. > :52:38.be in the top ten, and that does not invalidate the fact that Williams

:52:39. > :52:42.gave him the chance, they saw the raw speed there. Coming quite late,

:52:43. > :52:45.they have had a difficult season, but it would be surprising if he is

:52:46. > :52:54.not confirmed as continuing... Well, he is confirmed, actually! Yeah, he

:52:55. > :52:58.does know. We are riding on board with Valtteri Bottas, he is on a lap

:52:59. > :53:01.now, coming down is towards the entry to the long straight, a little

:53:02. > :53:05.bit of a lock-up, he just about manage to get the apex, quite

:53:06. > :53:11.difficult to tell with that wide lens. Now he sits and patiently

:53:12. > :53:16.waits for the next corner, turn 12. He might pick up a distance to from

:53:17. > :53:21.Hulkenberg in the Sauber, as long as that does not pick up his

:53:22. > :53:26.performance in this early part of the session, always a nice thing to

:53:27. > :53:29.say. It looks like Hulkenberg is hustling onto the next sequence of

:53:30. > :53:35.corners, down into 15. Have seen him lock-up, but he gets wide on the

:53:36. > :53:39.exit. It was looking sweet for a while, but a bit too early on the

:53:40. > :53:42.throttle, running onto the artificial grass. He will have

:53:43. > :53:46.picked up dust on the tyres, and when he turns into 19, the

:53:47. > :53:50.left-hander, it will affect his grip level and confidence. A bit more

:53:51. > :53:55.time to come from that Williams, I expect. Across the line goes

:53:56. > :54:01.Valtteri Bottas, third for the moment, 1:37.8 is a little bit off,

:54:02. > :54:06.we will have to see. He did 1:37.4 in Q2, so you would think a bit more

:54:07. > :54:10.to be found. We are running rapidly out of time, so whether he will be

:54:11. > :54:14.able to improve on that, at 40 seconds to go, Mark Webber is

:54:15. > :54:18.currently fastest, can he snatch pole position from Sebastian Vettel

:54:19. > :54:22.in this closing part of the season? It would be quite a story if he

:54:23. > :54:27.could do it once again. He has just gone fastest in the first sector,

:54:28. > :54:32.faster than anyone else in the first sector, let's watch the rest of the

:54:33. > :54:38.lap. Nice and early on the power on this long straight, tidy through

:54:39. > :54:42.12. Good middle sector time, just crossing the sector point faster

:54:43. > :54:47.than anyone else. Look at the time, up nearly half a second on what he

:54:48. > :54:52.has done so far. Vettel has just crossed the line and is about to go

:54:53. > :54:56.on to a lap, so we will find out soon, the chequered flag is out,

:54:57. > :55:02.Vettel just beat the chequered flag. Tidy so far for me, wide on

:55:03. > :55:09.the exit of 19, one corner to go. Can he hold it together? A good lap,

:55:10. > :55:13.will it be enough? 1:36.4, Mark Webber holds that fastest time, but

:55:14. > :55:19.his team-mate is on a lap as we speak. He is two tenth slower in the

:55:20. > :55:23.first sector, so Vettel has to find that in the remaining two sectors if

:55:24. > :55:27.he is going to get pole. What can Hulkenberg do? Great qualifying

:55:28. > :55:35.performance in Italy, can you match that? Egos third, when he qualified

:55:36. > :55:39.in Italy, but there are quick guys. Surely the Lotus driver can find a

:55:40. > :55:45.little bit more speed, can he attacked? He moves up to third,

:55:46. > :55:50.1:37.1, closest in behind the two Red Bulls. But last year's winner,

:55:51. > :55:55.Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes, can you produce a magic lap?

:55:56. > :56:02.Eaglescliffe, not as magic as he would have liked. -- he goes live.

:56:03. > :56:08.Kovalainen has done a lap, seventh place, and we await to see what

:56:09. > :56:12.Sebastian Vettel can do. Unless he has found more than two terms in the

:56:13. > :56:17.last sector, he is going to be sure. Oh, he has done it, he has just done

:56:18. > :56:23.it, Sebastian Vettel by a tenth of a second in the final sector! He had

:56:24. > :56:29.delivered a fantastic final sector, and Sebastian Vettel has taken his

:56:30. > :56:32.eighth pole position of 2013, back-to-back pole positions in

:56:33. > :56:38.Austin, the 44th of his career. Well, we thought for a moment that

:56:39. > :56:41.Mark Webber had done it, but once again Sebastian Vettel snatches it

:56:42. > :56:46.away. He pulled it back at the end of the lap, he would know from his

:56:47. > :56:50.cockpit display, you saw him punch the air as he crossed the line and

:56:51. > :56:55.saw the lap time, so he was living that is lap, he knew what he had to

:56:56. > :57:08.do to beat Mark Webber, and in the NT managed to do it. The one, Adam

:57:09. > :57:17.Boyd! -- the one, attaboy! Yes! Yes, boys, good job! Nice work.

:57:18. > :57:21.Shake and bake. I do not know what that means, maybe I am too old, can

:57:22. > :57:30.you fill me in? I can't, I think they just like the phrase! Nice job,

:57:31. > :57:34.Heikki. Excellent work. That is good from Lotus, you could hear the

:57:35. > :57:39.applause in the background, eighth place on the grid for tomorrow's's

:57:40. > :57:44.Grand Prix, barring any penalties. It is a Red Bull 1-2, the 23rd time

:57:45. > :57:48.they have sat on the front row together, those guys, Grosjean for

:57:49. > :58:28.Lotus is third. But the applause is all Sebastian

:58:29. > :58:33.Vettel, who was taken pole position here, as he did 12 months ago. But

:58:34. > :58:37.can he go on to take the victory? This is one of only two circuits on

:58:38. > :58:41.the current calendar that he has not taken a victory at, Hungary is the

:58:42. > :58:46.other one, and the has done that a few other times. He has only had one

:58:47. > :58:49.opportunity at the Circuit of the Americas, but you have to say that

:58:50. > :58:52.there is every chance of a managing to take the victory tomorrow. It

:58:53. > :58:57.will be an already full front row to the grid, but there is Heikki

:58:58. > :59:02.Kovalainen getting out of the Lotus, are you impressed by what he has

:59:03. > :59:11.done today? Unquestionably. Her standout

:59:12. > :59:14.performers foot today. -- and they are standout performers today.

:59:15. > :59:18.Alonso will not be disappointed. It was looking a lot worse going into

:59:19. > :59:22.the session. Lotus have two cars in the top ten, Mercedes have only one,

:59:23. > :59:27.and Ferrari. It means that Lotus could challenge for third or maybe

:59:28. > :59:30.even second in the constructors championship. That is why they

:59:31. > :59:37.signed Kovalainen. Tomorrow will be crucial.

:59:38. > :59:42.Sebastien, another race, another pole position. It seemed that one

:59:43. > :59:49.was left quite late. Do you think that you had it? No. Did not know

:59:50. > :59:56.what Mark was doing. After the first round, it was not enough. -- I did

:59:57. > :00:01.not know. All in all, I was happy with my second approach, much

:00:02. > :00:06.happier than with the first one. But, yes, it was tight. Mark had a

:00:07. > :00:10.wobble in the last sector. I'd knew that it would be close between us.

:00:11. > :00:20.That is the fifth time that they have taken the 1-2. The perfect

:00:21. > :00:24.present for the team principal. No big surprise, though. They have had

:00:25. > :00:28.the fastest car all year. Think we were treated to a battle. Mark

:00:29. > :00:34.Webber definitely boost Sebastian Vettel had. Yes. Mark has been

:00:35. > :00:37.looking good weekend. Mark especially has looked great. Wonder

:00:38. > :00:44.if he is kicking himself are not making pole position? It was

:00:45. > :00:48.certainly close. All credit to him. The Championship is over and his two

:00:49. > :00:52.races away from the end of his journey but is still pushing 100%.

:00:53. > :00:59.That find out what he thinks. Mark, that was pretty close. --

:01:00. > :01:02.let's find out. Yes, it was a good battle. Disappointing in the last

:01:03. > :01:06.sector. Why have to hold it together light-headed on my other lap and

:01:07. > :01:16.keep the first part of the lap in my last attempt. But, yeah, it is going

:01:17. > :01:21.to be tough to let that one go, when you want to be operating at the

:01:22. > :01:25.level that you should be. And that is what you expect of yourself. When

:01:26. > :01:36.you get it together, you are happy. But today, I did not do my best.

:01:37. > :01:43.Top work today. You will be going from eighth. It must be nice to be

:01:44. > :01:48.on track, instead of practising your golf swing. Absolutely. It is great

:01:49. > :01:55.to be back in Q3. I do not remember the last time, literally years. So

:01:56. > :01:58.far, it has been a good weekend. Yesterday, better than today. I've

:01:59. > :02:05.struggled in the cold temperatures but I managed to fight my way to Q3.

:02:06. > :02:13.In the last lap, I thought that was the maximum that I had today. But

:02:14. > :02:20.tomorrow, the same, hopefully, or even better. You look to be in

:02:21. > :02:23.incredible shape, so not racing regularly has not affected fitness.

:02:24. > :02:25.As he been able to make this seamless transition because you know

:02:26. > :02:31.the team from before? You look so comfortable. Yes, I've felt

:02:32. > :02:39.comfortable weekend. I felt that I've been surprised, I expected to

:02:40. > :02:45.be nervous, but it has been great. A lot of familiar faces, and the race

:02:46. > :02:48.engineer, I have worked with him at McLaren, and the performance

:02:49. > :02:56.engineer used to be at Caterham, so I know him as well. Perhaps that has

:02:57. > :03:00.contributed to the fact that things have been going so well. Obviously,

:03:01. > :03:06.you are here to get points tomorrow. Can you do that? I think I can. But

:03:07. > :03:09.you never know what happens. It is better not to make too many

:03:10. > :03:14.predictions. It could be a disaster. We need to try to stay focused. We

:03:15. > :03:20.need to maximise the potential that we have and see what we get. We wish

:03:21. > :03:28.you the best for the race. Thank you very much. Here is Roman, -- Romain

:03:29. > :03:32.Grosjean, talking to leave. Was there any more you could have

:03:33. > :03:34.got out of the car today? Think we were more less where we should have

:03:35. > :03:41.been. Maybe we could have been quicker but never as quick as the

:03:42. > :03:46.Red Bulls. They were very quick today. It was a good starting

:03:47. > :04:01.position for the race tomorrow. And Kovalainen is in the top ten, which

:04:02. > :04:04.is very good for scoring points. Congratulations. You will be going

:04:05. > :04:09.from the second row. Weather conditions on there? Especially at

:04:10. > :04:16.the beginning, the wind was picking up. -- how were the conditions out

:04:17. > :04:18.there. The first section is high-speed. They did not think it

:04:19. > :04:25.was the same car. It did not look good, but luckily we were able to

:04:26. > :04:33.make a better with tyre pressure. And at Q3, it was spot-on and it was

:04:34. > :04:37.a good lap. We saw how good you were as having a per CD is capped by

:04:38. > :04:41.June, but you will have to do that again tomorrow. -- keeping the

:04:42. > :04:46.Mercedes behind you. Adding we have good pace. We were thinking that

:04:47. > :04:50.going into the race and then it was a big surprise last time. We

:04:51. > :04:53.struggled. Compared to career, we have a different wing, not as high

:04:54. > :05:02.speed, so we are more vulnerable on the straights. The least we are good

:05:03. > :05:05.on the corners. -- but at least. I think Lewis Hamilton, if he is

:05:06. > :05:08.behind me, he will have a good chance. Is there a chance that you

:05:09. > :05:16.could get a podium finish tomorrow? No. Speaking for the race, I do not

:05:17. > :05:30.think so. I will try, and that would take it, but my gut feeling is no.

:05:31. > :05:34.Thank you very much. We would have loved to be further up

:05:35. > :05:38.but our pace was not that strong, as you can see. And it is the tyres.

:05:39. > :05:45.The car is quick that you cannot get the car tyres to work. Did the track

:05:46. > :05:52.feel different in qualifying? Think the wind direction changed. It was

:05:53. > :05:56.very gusty. The car was affected by that. And that might be the case

:05:57. > :06:02.tomorrow, from what we understand. It could be long and tough. Is it

:06:03. > :06:07.likely come tomorrow? I need to get a good start. The Red Bulls will be

:06:08. > :06:12.gone, as always. With that kind of pace... I mean, I have got

:06:13. > :06:18.Hulkenberg and Grosjean. If I can get past them, it is impossible to

:06:19. > :06:22.overtake a Sauber on the straight so I will have to do it somewhere else.

:06:23. > :06:33.It seems as though Lewis has decided that the Red Bulls are getting the

:06:34. > :06:36.12. -- 1-2. I think it was as he stated. The weather will be overcast

:06:37. > :06:41.than the track temperatures will be lower than we have seen. We know how

:06:42. > :06:45.sensitive the Mercedes is to getting those tyres in the operating window.

:06:46. > :06:51.But you never know, if the wind is in the right direction tomorrow, and

:06:52. > :06:58.if anyone can do it, Lewis can. We have heard a lot about the drivers

:06:59. > :07:02.and how that affects the car. Is it because it is unexpected, the wind

:07:03. > :07:07.direction? How does that work eMac we have been -- where we are located

:07:08. > :07:10.here, on a hillside, it is naturally a very flat area. There is a lot of

:07:11. > :07:17.wind around here. There is not a lack of natural coverage. The

:07:18. > :07:24.high-speed corner, it is Silverstone style, all above 100 mph. If you

:07:25. > :07:27.have a ten mile an hour headwind or a tailwind, it makes a huge

:07:28. > :07:35.difference to the aerodynamic balance. Nico Rosberg, let's hear

:07:36. > :07:42.from him. He qualified in 14th but will go to 13th because of Jenson.

:07:43. > :07:49.What was the trouble out there today? The track is very smooth, the

:07:50. > :07:56.asphalt, so it is at the limit of how the tyres work. For me, they did

:07:57. > :08:02.not work at all. Have been some surprises. The cars are able to do

:08:03. > :08:05.quick lap times, so that is why we see Williams so far in front, or

:08:06. > :08:14.even the server. It is very particular conditions. -- even

:08:15. > :08:18.Sauber. Fernando, if you could have been offered that before qualify

:08:19. > :08:23.started, would you have taken it? Yes. We were struggling in Q1,

:08:24. > :08:30.unfortunately. In Q2, we were 90% convinced that today was impossible.

:08:31. > :08:39.But, yeah, we managed to switch on the tyres, raise the temperatures.

:08:40. > :08:42.In the weekend, we have had the same problems. In the early sessions, we

:08:43. > :08:46.have not been competitive and then we improved in the afternoon. Warm

:08:47. > :08:50.temperatures now, and the asphalt temperatures helped us to get into

:08:51. > :08:58.Q3. And they think that was a good position, sixth. Of course, Nico and

:08:59. > :09:03.Felipe, and me with Hamilton, hopefully we can beat them tomorrow.

:09:04. > :09:09.Anand Alonso saying he felt lucky to get into Q3, you know there are all

:09:10. > :09:12.sorts of tangles. They have been. They have not been performing.

:09:13. > :09:17.Actually, he was genuinely surprised to get that far up the grid. And

:09:18. > :09:24.Massa being down, qualifying in 15th, but the disparity between the

:09:25. > :09:28.two was quite large. I think it was about that single lap. He ran wide

:09:29. > :09:31.at that first corner, and that the Tim out of sequence. You lose

:09:32. > :09:35.confidence and before you know it, you have lost a few tenths of a

:09:36. > :09:46.second. They will not get it right all the time and I think Massa has

:09:47. > :09:50.had a good run relatively. We're joined by Valtteri Bottas.

:09:51. > :09:56.Great job today, the fastest in Q1. I wonder whether you were hoping for

:09:57. > :10:04.even higher. Thank you. Actually, at Q3 I was expecting to be higher. But

:10:05. > :10:10.maybe the others had more speed and reserve. I've really put it down to

:10:11. > :10:16.teamwork, what we did. Through qualifying, were looking at the

:10:17. > :10:18.data. And we really managed to get everything out of the tyres. That

:10:19. > :10:23.was the key. We operated in the right window and many other teams

:10:24. > :10:26.would have struggled with that. Do you feel that this has given you the

:10:27. > :10:30.opportunity to show your natural speed because you came into Formula

:10:31. > :10:34.one highly respected and regarded? You have not always have the card to

:10:35. > :10:39.go out there and impress. But that has to be one of the best

:10:40. > :10:44.performances today. I'm very happy. With my own performance as well. I

:10:45. > :10:50.think I need to thank the team for giving me that kind of car. When we

:10:51. > :10:55.get the car right, the result is there. Big thanks to the team. It

:10:56. > :11:03.was a nice job and we did it together. What do you think you can

:11:04. > :11:15.do tomorrow? Points. That is the goal, points. Think it is a good

:11:16. > :11:22.starting point. Good luck tomorrow. Here is the professional get grid. A

:11:23. > :11:26.seventh consecutive Red Bull pole position goes the way of Sebastian

:11:27. > :11:29.Vettel ahead of Mark Webber. Romain Grosjean starts third for the fourth

:11:30. > :12:25.time this year. Think it is fair to say that we have

:12:26. > :12:30.got a little bit of a mixed upgrade. You would expect Felipe Massa to be

:12:31. > :12:33.further, and also Nico Rosberg. He looks disappointed. There was a lot

:12:34. > :12:38.of head stretching going on at Mercedes. Out of position, and this

:12:39. > :12:44.throws open how interesting the battle is for the constructors race.

:12:45. > :12:49.It certainly does. What a weeks pegging in terms of whether?

:12:50. > :12:52.Changeable. We have had overcast conditions. They were expecting more

:12:53. > :12:56.from the track in terms of its performance. -- what are we

:12:57. > :13:00.expecting in terms of weather. So far, it is disappointing. They will

:13:01. > :13:05.be hoping for warmer conditions tomorrow. And gusty. In terms of the

:13:06. > :13:10.tyres, what do you think in terms of stopping? One-stop is the only

:13:11. > :13:16.choice for the teams. The tyres are durable. The track conditions are

:13:17. > :13:21.good, so why would be amazed if they changed more than once. Catch us

:13:22. > :13:29.tomorrow evening for the highlights. At 10:25pm. So, it was the Red Bulls

:13:30. > :13:32.that blocked their way to lock out the front row today. And you can be

:13:33. > :13:36.sure that they will be on a charge tomorrow during the United States

:13:37. > :13:39.Grand Prix. Peggy very much for watching. We will see you tomorrow.

:13:40. > :13:43.-- thank you very much for watching.
