:00:15. > :00:23.This is more than just gorgeousness restyled. More than a fine line

:00:24. > :00:35.minutely redrawn. More than a nose job. A touch and a snip. These began

:00:36. > :00:46.life as blocks of the finest marble. Start again, sculpt from

:00:47. > :01:02.scratch. Lose the kinetics, jack-macro to Edward macro. --

:01:03. > :01:08.occurs -- KERS to ERS. Less fuel and a world of difference. This is it.

:01:09. > :01:18.The goddesses of speed to stand upon the start. Welcome to the

:01:19. > :02:45.revolution. Welcome to Formula One. MUSIC: "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac.

:02:46. > :02:52.Here it is, after a long winter, Formula One is back and like you

:02:53. > :02:57.have never seen it before. Outwith the old and in with the latest

:02:58. > :03:01.cutting edge hybrid technology. Formula One has undergone the

:03:02. > :03:07.biggest rule changes in a generation. Welcome to a and windy

:03:08. > :03:12.Melbourne. This is the first of 19 events. Silverstone will play host

:03:13. > :03:18.to the British Grand Prix in July. The paddock will be punting its flag

:03:19. > :03:23.in Russia when we visit Sochi in October. Double points are at stake

:03:24. > :03:28.for the final event in Abu Dhabi. Eddie Jordan will join us and Mark

:03:29. > :03:33.Webber will be joining the coverage this year. David Coulthard. What a

:03:34. > :03:41.tantalising and unpredictable prospect. Talking to the teams, they

:03:42. > :03:47.have no idea what will play out. The technology is so fresh. What is

:03:48. > :03:59.different? We have gone from the 2.4 V8 engine with kers. We have gone to

:04:00. > :04:04.a 1.6 litre turbo-charged engine with a bigger storage capacity of

:04:05. > :04:08.160 horsepower. There are two ways the energy is recovered that we will

:04:09. > :04:21.not go into but it means that in the past if you lost KERS. You could go

:04:22. > :04:29.one. Now, without recoverable energy, you are out of the race. How

:04:30. > :04:34.does it translate? The systems are integrated to work as and when the

:04:35. > :04:38.engineers have programmed them. The driver will have a push to pass, but

:04:39. > :04:42.they will not know how much horsepower is coming from the

:04:43. > :04:48.engine, all the battery packs on board. In effect, it will give more

:04:49. > :04:54.torque. There have been changes to the tyres. Two kilos heavier.

:04:55. > :04:58.Pirelli responded to the extra load that will be there when they leave

:04:59. > :05:02.the corners and responded to criticism from the past when the

:05:03. > :05:06.tyres have been fragile with a lot of marble. Less talk about the tyres

:05:07. > :05:11.and more talk about the power units, expect that. 100 kilograms of fuel

:05:12. > :05:24.for the race, how will that affect things? The engines have 100

:05:25. > :05:34.kilograms available and fuel flow rate of 100 kilos per hour the teams

:05:35. > :05:38.will need to rely on recoverable energy to propel the car and reach

:05:39. > :05:50.that consumption. More strategy deployed in that area. It is cutting

:05:51. > :05:53.edge. Aircraft are flying over. Formula One remains a pinnacle of

:05:54. > :05:59.engineering when it comes to motor racing, which makes it attractive to

:06:00. > :06:06.motor manufacturers. We can remind ourselves of how the drivers

:06:07. > :06:10.qualified yesterday. Mercedes have been looking like the

:06:11. > :06:13.team to beat with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg dominating in testing

:06:14. > :06:19.and practice this weekend. The favourite for the drivers' title,

:06:20. > :06:26.Lewis Hamilton, took pole position with Rosberg settling the bird. Red

:06:27. > :06:31.Bull retains the services of Sebastian Vettel, and he has been

:06:32. > :06:36.joined by Daniel Ricciardo, who delighted the Australian crowd by

:06:37. > :06:41.qualifying second. Vettel failed to make the top ten, suffering

:06:42. > :06:46.drivability opens with his car. Jenson Button hopes for a better

:06:47. > :06:52.year with McLaren and is joined by Kevin Magnussen, a rookie with a big

:06:53. > :06:56.reputation. Jenson Button was caught out by the yellow flags Raikkonen

:06:57. > :07:00.and did not get out of Q2 but Magnusson was through, putting in an

:07:01. > :07:07.amazing lap in his first qualifying session, and he starts from fourth.

:07:08. > :07:11.The Ferrari team, Fernando Alonso joined by Kimi Raikkonen. His

:07:12. > :07:16.comeback did not go well, spinning out in Q2. He had blown his chance

:07:17. > :07:21.in traffic. Alonso delivered a solid performance for fifth place. Toro

:07:22. > :07:26.Rosso keep Jean-Eric Vergne and he is joined by Daniil Kvyat. Neither

:07:27. > :07:32.driver were disappointed in qualifying. An impressive

:07:33. > :07:40.performance from Daniil Kvyat ended in the wall. He starts from eighth.

:07:41. > :07:44.Force India retains Mercedes power and have Nico Hulkenberg from

:07:45. > :07:49.Sauber, joined by Sergio Perez, rejected by McLaren. Hulkenberg

:07:50. > :07:58.seven in qualifying. Perez had a tougher time, dropping out in Q2 to

:07:59. > :08:03.line up 16th. Williams have Felipe Massa alongside Valtteri Bottas. And

:08:04. > :08:10.Mercedes engines. Both Williams went into Q3, but not as high as hoped.

:08:11. > :08:15.Massa starting ninth and Bottas, starting 10th, but has a penalty for

:08:16. > :08:25.a gearbox change. Sauber sticks with Ferrari power unit. Adrian Sutil

:08:26. > :08:33.will line up 13th. Both cars have problems. Gutierrez starting at the

:08:34. > :08:39.back. Caterham had new drivers in Marcus Ericsson and Kamui

:08:40. > :08:45.Kobayashi. The Japanese driver got into Q2. Eriksson made a good debut

:08:46. > :08:51.despite having driven barely a lap until yesterday, qualifying 28.

:08:52. > :08:56.Marussia have gone to Ferrari power. Drivers are not changed. Bianchi

:08:57. > :09:02.earning 10th place last year, but he had difficulties in qualifying, so

:09:03. > :09:10.is darts at 18. Chilton with a run to 17 -- starts. Pastor Maldonado

:09:11. > :09:15.and Romain Grosjean for Lotus. They have had a terrible start to the

:09:16. > :09:19.season. Things got worse this weekend with every session blighted

:09:20. > :09:26.by problems. Yesterday was no different. Both qualified on the

:09:27. > :09:35.back row. Lewis Hamilton on pole position and Daniel Ricciardo on his

:09:36. > :10:13.first front row. Was Burke has Fernando Alonso just behind.

:10:14. > :10:20.Romain Grosjean will start from the pit lane.

:10:21. > :10:26.A fascinating qualifying session particularly for Daniel Ricciardo.

:10:27. > :10:34.He is on the front row. Tom Clarkson has been in the pit lane. It was wet

:10:35. > :10:37.in qualifying and dry today. It is a different set of circumstances. It

:10:38. > :10:42.does not look like we will get rain. It is windy, 14 kilometres an

:10:43. > :10:48.hour. It will be dry, which means the teams get a free tyre choice,

:10:49. > :10:54.starting on either soft or medium. Talking to Pirelli, it looks like a

:10:55. > :10:58.two-stop race, starting on the soft and getting on the medium later. We

:10:59. > :11:02.could see them swapping to the medium as late as Lap 51. There has

:11:03. > :11:09.been talk about the teams being in trouble. Reliability is the main

:11:10. > :11:15.concern. A lot of the teams have not completed a race distance yet. Red

:11:16. > :11:20.Bull have none. Even the pre-season favourites Mercedes have only done

:11:21. > :11:26.two. Ferrari have done to macro. Things like tyre wear our secondary

:11:27. > :11:34.concern for the teams. Fuel consumption. 100 kilograms. I think

:11:35. > :11:41.it will be a very interesting race. And a high chance of the safety car

:11:42. > :11:44.today. They say there is a 50% chance traditionally. Last year

:11:45. > :11:49.there was not, but there have even years when we had up to four. If

:11:50. > :11:54.that happens, it will be busy in the pit lane.

:11:55. > :12:01.Not a lot of time before the start of your first Grand Prix from the

:12:02. > :12:07.front row. How are you feeling? I feel good. Very excited. There has

:12:08. > :12:11.been a long build-up. Just trying to remain excited enough, but calm

:12:12. > :12:16.enough that I am still keeping to myself and trying to do what I have

:12:17. > :12:21.to do out there. Is it a different procedure getting off the line? It

:12:22. > :12:26.is similar, but managing the extra torque and the wheel spins is a

:12:27. > :12:32.challenge. We will see how we go. Hopefully a good run to Turn 1 and

:12:33. > :12:35.sit up front with the big boys. A strong performance from you

:12:36. > :12:47.yesterday. How much of today is still unknown? I think a lot. Fuel,

:12:48. > :12:52.we are not quite sure. We will get a better idea after the first laps.

:12:53. > :12:58.What we have to save and how much. Interesting, I am looking forward,

:12:59. > :13:04.now after the talks to see the real thing. What about getting off the

:13:05. > :13:09.grid? I am not too concerned. My starts have been decent. We did not

:13:10. > :13:16.have any big surprises. Touch wood we will not have issues with the

:13:17. > :13:21.clutch. I should have an OK start. Christian, a brave new dawn.

:13:22. > :13:27.Qualifying when not too bad, but what can you expect to the race?

:13:28. > :13:32.Qualifying surprised us. Hopefully we will be surprised in the race. We

:13:33. > :13:36.have not done a lap distance so anything after Lap 22 is new

:13:37. > :13:45.territory. Hopefully we can turn this into a good result. How

:13:46. > :13:49.complicated is the procedure? Massively, getting the energy

:13:50. > :13:53.through the tyres into the tarmac, and we have not done many starts.

:13:54. > :13:59.Everything is new today. What did you do all winter? Drinking Coffey

:14:00. > :14:05.and scratching our heads thinking, how are we going to fix the car?

:14:06. > :14:10.Ninth place on the grid. What are we talking about the start, how

:14:11. > :14:17.difficult will it be? It will be difficult. They start differently.

:14:18. > :14:20.It will be difficult for reliability, as well. The first

:14:21. > :14:29.race, I hope we can put everything together. Keeping it clean in Turn 1

:14:30. > :14:34.will not be easy. Excited? Yes. What have you said to drivers in

:14:35. > :14:40.terms of strategy? We had lots of discussions. At that stage it is not

:14:41. > :14:45.the problem about managing their race, it is about finishing the

:14:46. > :14:51.race. Anything we should look out for? What will be the big surprise?

:14:52. > :14:57.Lets see how many safety cars we have. We hope none. I think this is

:14:58. > :14:59.the main point. 20, 21 cars getting off the grid or not going off the

:15:00. > :15:09.grid. Daniel Ricciardo basking in the

:15:10. > :15:13.limelight, can he take the charge to Lewis Hamilton? The Australian Grand

:15:14. > :15:44.Prix 2014. There are 21 cars on the grid, using

:15:45. > :15:48.new technology, and one car in the pit lane, they have never gone

:15:49. > :15:57.through a stored procedure in anger until now. We have got one set of

:15:58. > :16:01.yellows, Max Chilton, I think. Marcus Ericsson going past him. Only

:16:02. > :16:09.one left behind, that is pretty good. Given it is the world's best

:16:10. > :16:15.for the one teams, we should expect them all to get away. It is such

:16:16. > :16:20.fresh technology that they have. All through the testing, the procedures

:16:21. > :16:26.were not tested, it was just getting the system is working, getting the

:16:27. > :16:33.maximum charge into the battery. This is all new to all of us.

:16:34. > :16:38.Sebastian Vettel has gone for the medium compound. That is a different

:16:39. > :16:42.strategy from those around him. They all have free choice, because it was

:16:43. > :16:49.wet yesterday. Romain Grosjean in the pit lane, waiting for the

:16:50. > :16:52.signal. I will be interested to see what Sebastian Vettel does, because

:16:53. > :17:02.that tyre is slower than the option tyre. Is he planning to come in

:17:03. > :17:10.early? RADIO: The big loss of boost pressure. A drive-through penalty

:17:11. > :17:14.for Romain Grosjean, he left the pit garage prior to the 15 minute

:17:15. > :17:20.signal, so not a good start for them. He will start from the pit

:17:21. > :17:23.lane. Lotus have had so many difficulties this weekend, it is

:17:24. > :17:30.basically turning into a test session. Max Chilton has been pushed

:17:31. > :17:35.in. They will have to get that sorted quickly. Hopefully, they will

:17:36. > :17:44.get him on his way. I think everybody else is making their way

:17:45. > :17:50.around. On board with Kevin Magnussen. A 50% chance of safety

:17:51. > :17:56.cars, the teams are predicting a higher percentage, given the

:17:57. > :18:01.liability issues, but the figure you are using is based on first corner

:18:02. > :18:08.incidents. Sebastian Vettel on the prime tyre, you never wish for an

:18:09. > :18:16.accident, but he is trying to make a different shortage of work. The

:18:17. > :18:21.drivers are a new territory. They have done some practice starts, but

:18:22. > :18:27.never surrounded by a grid of cars. That could make a difference. Let's

:18:28. > :18:33.hope we don't see the cars stalling, but it is a possibility. Ron Dennis

:18:34. > :18:39.back at the helm of McLaren. Looking at the prospect for Kevin Magnussen,

:18:40. > :18:46.what a stunning effort, to line up in fourth place. As long as Lewis

:18:47. > :18:52.Hamilton is lined up with the sensor, his position should not be a

:18:53. > :18:59.problem. He might have seen some black lines. He might have decided

:19:00. > :19:06.to move to the left. Lewis Hamilton at the front, with Daniel Ricciardo.

:19:07. > :19:12.Watch out for Sebastian Vettel, starting 12. A number of people

:19:13. > :19:17.further down that would have been expected. We will have to see if

:19:18. > :19:21.they can make their way through. Pastor Maldonado starting at the

:19:22. > :19:27.back, he moved from Williams to Lotus. A new ear rot of Formula 1 is

:19:28. > :19:33.about to power its way into the history books. Let's listen to the

:19:34. > :19:44.new noise of the start. The start is aborted. The yellow light. There

:19:45. > :19:50.will be an extra formation lap, so the race distance will be reduced

:19:51. > :19:55.from 58 laps to 57. That helps with the fuel consumption. These lads

:19:56. > :20:04.will not use anywhere near the predicted fuel usage, 1.7 kilos a

:20:05. > :20:11.lap. They have saved themselves at least that amount. That is crucial.

:20:12. > :20:17.AQ safety car laps as well. That is Jules Bianchi, the other Marussia in

:20:18. > :20:25.trouble as well. They have got the Ferrari power unit. It is very

:20:26. > :20:29.different. He had some electrical problems yesterday in qualifying, he

:20:30. > :20:33.completed his laps. But they have got troubles here today. The

:20:34. > :20:42.Marshall had to push the neutral button, that is the fail-safe. Let's

:20:43. > :20:48.go down to the pits, Tom. Russia have problems, but they think they

:20:49. > :20:51.have overcome them, Max Chilton has just joined Romain Grosjean at the

:20:52. > :21:00.end of the pit lane, his engine is sounding green -- clean. It was a

:21:01. > :21:05.long wait. It will take him another minute or so to come around and line

:21:06. > :21:09.up on the grid. The poll might consider almost a minute in pole

:21:10. > :21:18.position, waiting for the grid to line up. Asking for some feedback on

:21:19. > :21:26.the launch, saying it feels like it is bogging down a bit. That will be

:21:27. > :21:32.an RPM issue. A power issue. Whether it is coming from the engine or the

:21:33. > :21:36.eligible supply. He wants a bit more power as he releases the crutch. We

:21:37. > :21:41.have the more Russia cars lining up behind the Lotus. We thought these

:21:42. > :21:49.problems might occur in this new era, the Lotus does not have a

:21:50. > :21:55.problem as far as we know, but the Marussia cars have struggled to get

:21:56. > :22:02.away. They hope they can move away cleanly this time. A nice view on

:22:03. > :22:10.board the Mercedes. You can see at the bottom of the pushrod the

:22:11. > :22:15.movement. It is the Williams, sorry. We will hopefully get some more

:22:16. > :22:20.angles of that. We were noticing in practice a lot of lateral role in

:22:21. > :22:29.the Williams. That might be a clever device that they have. RADIO: I have

:22:30. > :22:37.no power. That is OK. Who will hear a lot of this, it will be more

:22:38. > :22:47.codified than ever. No kinetic energy. It could well be. We will be

:22:48. > :22:51.guessing like mad. It will be like Fernando Alonso talking to his

:22:52. > :22:56.engineer in Italian, if not worse! Charlie Whiting is keen to get them

:22:57. > :23:03.lined up and away conclave. It is Formula 1, but not as we know it. It

:23:04. > :23:07.is completely different, the noise and technology are different,

:23:08. > :23:13.everybody getting used to it for the first time. Marcus Ericsson, it is

:23:14. > :23:22.good to have a Swedish driver back informing one. The last time was in

:23:23. > :23:27.1991, but he becomes the 24th driver from that country to enter Grand

:23:28. > :23:34.Prix racing since 1950. Pastor Maldonado joining at the back. Let's

:23:35. > :23:39.see if we get a start this time. We are ready to go racing in Australia.

:23:40. > :23:45.Away we go. They all seemed too bogged down, but Nico Rosberg cuts

:23:46. > :23:56.through. Nico Rosberg leads, Lewis Hamilton has lost his place. Of

:23:57. > :24:00.ghostly Caterham. And a Williams. It is probably Valtteri Bottas, and it

:24:01. > :24:09.may have been Marcus Ericsson. A good start from Nico Rosberg.

:24:10. > :24:13.Contact further down the field, Sebastian Vettel, finding his way

:24:14. > :24:18.through the field. Will we get a safety car immediately? Quite

:24:19. > :24:26.likely, I would think. No sign of the safety car just yet. The

:24:27. > :24:35.crossbow glades. -- Nico Rosberg leads. A bit of dicing around. Kevin

:24:36. > :24:41.Magnussen in the McLaren, chasing Lewis Hamilton. Kevin Magnussen

:24:42. > :24:46.trying to go around the outside of Lewis Hamilton. He has made the

:24:47. > :24:52.move. Nico Hulkenberg will make the move on Fernando Alonso. A great

:24:53. > :24:57.debut from Kevin Magnussen. He has got past Lewis Hamilton. You have to

:24:58. > :25:06.think about getting to the end of this. RADIO: The engine is not

:25:07. > :25:11.running. Jean-Eric Vergne trying to get Fernando Alonso. The big

:25:12. > :25:18.decision is, how do they use the fuel? Kevin Magnussen deploying some

:25:19. > :25:27.extra fuel. Look at the damage to the Caterham. It is Kamui Kobayashi,

:25:28. > :25:37.a lot of damage. Very disappointing return to Formula 1 for Kamui

:25:38. > :25:44.Kobayashi. Daniil Kvyat has survived the opening lap, the Russian rookie.

:25:45. > :25:51.Sebastian Vettel down in 15th place. A lock-up from Daniil Kvyat. He was

:25:52. > :25:55.not overtaking, he was just defending from Valtteri Bottas.

:25:56. > :26:03.Jenson Button is at the back of the group, in 11th place. Felipe Massa

:26:04. > :26:10.must have been involved earlier. One of the Force India cars in, Sergio

:26:11. > :26:18.Perez. That might have been down in the third corner, the incident that

:26:19. > :26:24.Sebastian Vettel avoided. Esteban Gutierrez goes back out again.

:26:25. > :26:34.Sebastian Vettel getting very heated on the radio, he says, do something.

:26:35. > :26:44.Does he have a problem? He is very slow in a straight line. RADIO: We

:26:45. > :26:47.need to retire, save the engine. That is desperately four Lewis

:26:48. > :26:54.Hamilton, they are having to retire already. They are thinking about the

:26:55. > :27:02.whole championship. He is not coming in just yet. He will fight that one.

:27:03. > :27:12.He will come across the line in fifth place. RADIO: Stay out, keep

:27:13. > :27:20.rolling. A change of plan, there is always a slight delay on the radio.

:27:21. > :27:24.Still no sign of the safety car. Kevin Magnussen is in third place,

:27:25. > :27:31.but Nico Rosberg leads, from Daniel Ricciardo. Kevin Magnussen catching

:27:32. > :27:38.in the last lap. Nico Hulkenberg is in fifth place, Lewis Hamilton

:27:39. > :27:46.fought his way with him. We are on board with Lewis Hamilton, is it

:27:47. > :27:51.running OK again? It sounds like an old Massey Ferguson, in comparison

:27:52. > :28:00.to what we have been used to. That is what they sound like now! Daniil

:28:01. > :28:07.Kvyat is chasing Kimi Raikkonen. Kimi Raikkonen going round the

:28:08. > :28:15.outside of Jean-Eric Vergne. Felt terrible task finding on. We have

:28:16. > :28:22.lost the Williams of Felipe Massa. Valtteri Bottas trying to get past

:28:23. > :28:27.Daniil Kvyat. He makes the move stick. How much fuel are they

:28:28. > :28:32.burning off? It may change later in the race. Jenson Button following

:28:33. > :28:39.in, trying to do something to make up some places and get into the top

:28:40. > :28:45.ten. Nico Rosberg still leading, he does not have a huge gap. Into the

:28:46. > :28:49.pits comes Lewis Hamilton. They tried to keep him out there, but it

:28:50. > :28:54.could all be over for the pole position sitter in the early stages

:28:55. > :29:00.of the Australian Grand Prix. This is desperate. Not what they were

:29:01. > :29:07.hoping for, he had a great qualifying yesterday. Off the back

:29:08. > :29:10.of positive testing, this new technology is so fresh, that could

:29:11. > :29:15.be any number of issues that have stopped his running this afternoon.

:29:16. > :29:21.There was confidence, but also wariness, you just do not know what

:29:22. > :29:26.will happen. The other Mercedes is leading, Nico Rosberg in front,

:29:27. > :29:33.chased by Daniel Ricciardo and even Magnusson. Sebastian Vettel is so

:29:34. > :29:37.far off the pace. When you do not have your kinetic energy available,

:29:38. > :29:43.you are losing up to 160 horsepower per lap. Sebastian Vettel

:29:44. > :29:46.struggling, it might not be much longer that he can stay out there.

:29:47. > :29:52.The white colours for the Williams this year, the changed live array.

:29:53. > :29:59.Valtteri Bottas has stayed with the team. He has tucked in behind the

:30:00. > :30:06.Toro Rosso, trying to get past Jean-Eric Vergne. Jean-Eric Vergne,

:30:07. > :30:15.always quick in the wet. He is handing on in there in seventh place

:30:16. > :30:21.in the drive. They come down, still waved yellows from the incident

:30:22. > :30:29.earlier on. Fernando Alonso has moved up to fifth place, with Lewis

:30:30. > :30:42.Hamilton's retirement. Daniil Kvyat chased by Jenson Button. Valtteri

:30:43. > :30:45.Bottas is on a run here. They were almost touching. He got the inside

:30:46. > :30:53.line and that was good driving from both of them. He just opened the

:30:54. > :30:59.steering and pushed him wide. It is a long season, you do not need to

:31:00. > :31:03.make enemies. RADIO: it seems a little bit OK now, a slight

:31:04. > :31:09.improvement, just the beginning out of the corners. Understood.

:31:10. > :31:20.Presumably referring to the kinetic energy recovery system, which gives

:31:21. > :31:23.it some more drive but clearly Sebastian Vettel is in trouble and

:31:24. > :31:28.Red Bull's difficult start to the season appears to be continuing. It

:31:29. > :31:34.seemed better on Friday. We can take another look at the start. Magnusson

:31:35. > :31:39.upfront. He is weaving across the track. Look out for Massa.

:31:40. > :31:48.Caterham, it locks up massively and rams into the back of Massa, the

:31:49. > :32:05.innocent party. Buchanan expect Coe by dash-macro your -- Kamui

:32:06. > :32:14.Kobayashi. Look at that when it turns to the left. My goodness, it

:32:15. > :32:27.is lucky he did not get Colette did. I think Raikkonen got hit by

:32:28. > :32:31.Kobayashi. Great driving from Daniel Ricciardo down the inside of Lewis

:32:32. > :32:39.Hamilton. Not only does he have speed, he has bravery, as well.

:32:40. > :32:46.Massa, he has been involved and a lot of incidents over the years. He

:32:47. > :32:53.has been guilty of some of them, but that time he was not guilty. On the

:32:54. > :33:00.inside, Daniel Ricciardo on the brakes. Sensibly gives him space.

:33:01. > :33:06.Was Lewis in trouble right from the start? What about Vettel? If you

:33:07. > :33:11.have no kinetic energy, presumably you do not get a lot of power and

:33:12. > :33:17.launch. That is what it looks like when you don't have 160 horses on

:33:18. > :33:21.top of those coming from the turbo-charged engine. Hopefully we

:33:22. > :33:27.will stay with this and see what happened. No, we will not. We will

:33:28. > :33:32.watch Bottas. That was a good start. You could hear the tyres, scrambling

:33:33. > :33:38.for grip in the run to the first corner. He was lucky. That is motor

:33:39. > :33:44.racing. Sometimes you are in the right place at the right time.

:33:45. > :33:51.Rosberg maintaining the gap. The incident between Kobayashi and Massa

:33:52. > :33:55.will be investigated. There are new rules on endorsements for drivers. I

:33:56. > :34:01.wonder if they will come into Playford Kobayashi. You get points

:34:02. > :34:12.on your racing licence. Bottas having a go. He was just through.

:34:13. > :34:18.No. Yes, he has. Sorry to interrupts the team radio but that was exciting

:34:19. > :34:25.from Bottas and Williams loved it. He was a man on the move. Williams

:34:26. > :34:32.moving forward. New engine partner, new sponsor, new driver in Massa,

:34:33. > :34:36.but he made a short debut. Nico Hulkenberg has made it around

:34:37. > :34:39.because he had three starts in Australia and has never made the end

:34:40. > :34:46.of Lap 1. Currently running fourth in the Force India. He looks the

:34:47. > :34:49.real deal. A lot of people are surprised he hasn't found his way

:34:50. > :34:56.into a world championship winning team. I will not say the top team,

:34:57. > :35:00.because Force India may well be a top team this year. Mercedes power

:35:01. > :35:04.behind them. Whatever budget they have, it has appeared to work

:35:05. > :35:19.efficiently over the years. Alonso is close behind. RADIO: good work.

:35:20. > :35:24.Mega. The engineer very happy with what he was doing. We can get some

:35:25. > :35:30.news from Tom. I just caught up with Niki Lauda who

:35:31. > :35:35.said Lewis is engine was not functioning properly from the start.

:35:36. > :35:39.They are still investigating. He knew his day would be short from the

:35:40. > :35:44.start. That is a shame for Hamilton. But

:35:45. > :35:50.his team-mate is leading the Grand Prix. This race is hotting up for

:35:51. > :35:56.fourth place between Hulkenberg and Alonso and Bottas, chasing in

:35:57. > :36:04.Williams. Jenson reporting his left front tyre is beginning to degrade.

:36:05. > :36:09.Bottas had a run on Alonso. Not enough space as they headed down to

:36:10. > :36:16.Turn 3. Alonso took a careful line on the inside to prevent him from

:36:17. > :36:25.coming past. These cars are using a braking system that is electron --

:36:26. > :36:30.electronically controlled. It has to work seamlessly. Williams are proud

:36:31. > :36:34.of their system. Pat Simon saying the driver cannot tell the

:36:35. > :36:42.difference between the brakes and electricity generation. He hit the

:36:43. > :36:51.wall. He has got damage. You can hear it. That will be it for Bottas.

:36:52. > :36:56.What a shame. He has broken the wheel. I should think the suspension

:36:57. > :37:03.is damaged, as well. He has ripped off the tyre. That will be in the

:37:04. > :37:10.middle of the track. A brave marshal will recover that. Would they have

:37:11. > :37:15.to use the safety car? After he made contact with the wall, it was like

:37:16. > :37:30.he was not able to change from the seventh gear. RADIO: box. I think he

:37:31. > :37:34.is coming in. This is coming out of turn ten, as he accelerates coming

:37:35. > :37:40.he catches the wheel, it was just a kiss, but enough to break the rear

:37:41. > :37:45.rim. It was a glancing blow. Normally, you would think that would

:37:46. > :37:52.not be enough. But it has broken the rim. He was immediately on the

:37:53. > :37:58.limiter and did not shift out of seventh gear. I wonder if that has

:37:59. > :38:03.done more damage. Claire Williams, this is horrible for Williams. They

:38:04. > :38:07.had a brilliant winter testing programme. But like Hamilton at

:38:08. > :38:13.Mercedes, things are going wrong. They lost a car already. What is the

:38:14. > :38:21.damage here? Maybe it is just the rim. They are sending him on his

:38:22. > :38:27.way. We can see if he has got any other damage. I am sure it was a

:38:28. > :38:32.good inspection. It looks straight enough. The tyre that came off is

:38:33. > :38:39.still there and yellow flags are out at that section. Daniel Ricciardo is

:38:40. > :38:44.second, Magnusson in third. McLaren failed to get a single podium last

:38:45. > :38:49.year. That is the remaining part of the wheel rim. That is nasty to see

:38:50. > :38:56.it sitting on track. At least it is just off-line. It might not be a

:38:57. > :39:05.complete disaster. The safety car has come out. It looks like we are

:39:06. > :39:10.getting ready for the tyre stops. Earlier, perhaps, than some teams

:39:11. > :39:15.were planning. Jenson Button taking advantage and coming in to see if he

:39:16. > :39:27.can gain a little on the cars he was struggling to get past. He said his

:39:28. > :39:33.tyre was graining already. Bottas will be able to take up his position

:39:34. > :39:39.closer to the front. The safety car has not picked up the leader, as

:39:40. > :39:45.such. He is a long way from the leader, which is unusual. Rosberg is

:39:46. > :39:56.coming in, we gather, hearing from the radio messages. They are given a

:39:57. > :40:08.delta time and they are not allowed to go faster than that time. He is

:40:09. > :40:13.shifting years, playing around with fuel saving as he makes his way back

:40:14. > :40:27.to the pits. No surprise the safety car is out. Charlie Whiting, the

:40:28. > :40:30.race director. The safety car has popped up and is waiting for the

:40:31. > :40:39.leader, who has just pitted. That will be confusing. No risk of rain,

:40:40. > :40:46.but there is an intriguing race under way. Ricciardo is also in.

:40:47. > :40:54.Magnusson will wait to see whether he comes in. Another set of soft

:40:55. > :40:59.tyres going on. We are up with the one remaining Red Bull in the race.

:41:00. > :41:05.It looks like all of the leaders... Hulkenberg coming in as well. A four

:41:06. > :41:13.second stop for Rosberg. And a good stop for Ricciardo. Let's see where

:41:14. > :41:23.Magnusson comes out. I think Jenson Button might be ahead of them.

:41:24. > :41:31.Magnusson kicking up the grass a little bit. We can watch what was

:41:32. > :41:36.happening with Jenson Button. That was a late call to go into the

:41:37. > :41:42.pits. He was waiting for the message, and by coming in? He was

:41:43. > :41:54.the first to come in. I think he was all right. Luckily no one was on his

:41:55. > :42:02.inside. It has worked for him, putting him up to six. For the

:42:03. > :42:04.moment, at least, it looks like consistent weather conditions.

:42:05. > :42:16.Ricciardo is still a factor in this race. He is running a strong second

:42:17. > :42:19.place. But his team-mate is out. What a disappointing way to start

:42:20. > :42:26.the season, tell us, you sound as if you knew before the race started

:42:27. > :42:30.there was a problem? The second formation lap we lost power, we do

:42:31. > :42:36.not understand the problem yet. I hope the second car has no problem

:42:37. > :42:45.and Daniel 's Mac car is fine. 50% of the Garrard is down which is bad.

:42:46. > :42:51.-- garage. All of us expected the cars to beach at some point. But

:42:52. > :42:56.there is one car in the race still so we hope he gets through without

:42:57. > :43:02.problems. It is interesting when you say things like no power, is that

:43:03. > :43:07.normal? How much is just finding out as you go along? Everything is

:43:08. > :43:15.linked to each other. In the beginning, I thought that basically

:43:16. > :43:19.the battery does not discharge and I do not get power from the battery.

:43:20. > :43:25.We know by now the engine failed for some reason.

:43:26. > :43:31.We have the race back under way. Nico Rosberg leading from Ricciardo

:43:32. > :43:35.and Magnusson and then Hulkenberg, Alonso and Jenson Button up into

:43:36. > :43:41.sick place, the early pit stop helping him, he has made three

:43:42. > :43:48.places. It also helped Bottas, who has another chance to pick up places

:43:49. > :43:54.because he is among the action. The two Marussias still running. Chilton

:43:55. > :43:59.and Bianchi. Bianchi I think ahead of Chilton at this stage. Adrian

:44:00. > :44:05.Sutil did not stop will stop I think pretty much the other front runners

:44:06. > :44:12.made their pit stop. Daniil Kvyat is behind Adrian Sutil who has not

:44:13. > :44:18.stopped. No changes just yet on the restart. Hulkenberg in fourth

:44:19. > :44:25.place. Alonso fifth and Jenson Button has gained. We are hearing

:44:26. > :44:30.that Magnusson has been told by his engineer they expect 20 laps on the

:44:31. > :44:38.fresh set of option tyres. 20 racing laps, I presume. That would give us

:44:39. > :44:43.an indication of the life of the tyres. Chilton is leading between

:44:44. > :44:51.the Marussias. Bianchi had problems early on. Chilton ahead of Gutierrez

:44:52. > :44:56.at this stage with Bottas around there. We will see if Bottas has got

:44:57. > :45:11.past him, in fact, yes. Gutierrez has got past Chilton. Kimi Raikkonen

:45:12. > :45:15.is in eighth place. He took a hit on the first corner, from Kamui

:45:16. > :45:19.Kobayashi, but he has been running reasonably well so far. We have had

:45:20. > :45:26.one pit stop for the front runners, and just Adrian Sutil and Pastor

:45:27. > :45:31.Maldonado yet to make one. Romain Grosjean started from the pit lane,

:45:32. > :45:36.he had a drive-through penalty, he is in 12th place. The Lotus cars are

:45:37. > :45:51.still running. Let's listen to Jenson Button.

:45:52. > :45:57.You only go as low as third gear, you have an eight speed gearbox,

:45:58. > :46:05.they are talking about short shifting and using a slightly longer

:46:06. > :46:11.ratio to make full use of the increased torque from the power

:46:12. > :46:16.units. Eight speed, but they do not use or eight. They cannot change the

:46:17. > :46:24.ratios of. I do not think they are coming close to the revs of 15,000.

:46:25. > :46:30.We hope to get some graphics to show us what rpm they are running. The

:46:31. > :46:35.more rpm you push round the engine, the more fuel you will burn, and

:46:36. > :46:42.they have a strategic plan of 1.71 kilos of fuel per lap, to make the

:46:43. > :46:48.distance. That is affected by the fact that the race is now one that

:46:49. > :46:53.shorter, and the safety car, so that gives them a margin later. The teams

:46:54. > :47:02.are monitoring the fuel flow all the time, they will know whether they

:47:03. > :47:05.are up all behind. All the time, they are talking to the drivers,

:47:06. > :47:10.adjusting the driving style or changing the mapping. We have seen a

:47:11. > :47:20.message that Jenson Button ask, how are we doing? Tom? I have come right

:47:21. > :47:24.down to the end of the pit lane, so I can try to listen to see if they

:47:25. > :47:29.are lifting off for the first corner, and they are well beyond the

:47:30. > :47:34.bridge. A guy from Mercedes said yesterday, if there is one safety

:47:35. > :47:39.car, they should be able to drive flat-out for the whole Grand Prix.

:47:40. > :47:44.Maybe they are not having to think too much about fuel saving. Some of

:47:45. > :47:50.the engineers said this circuit is one of the toughest on the fuel, but

:47:51. > :47:55.they are already talking about starting some of the other races

:47:56. > :48:00.with less than the 100 kilograms that are permitted, which shows how

:48:01. > :48:04.much progress they have made. When these rules were set, they never

:48:05. > :48:09.thought they would be able to do some of the races on even less than

:48:10. > :48:14.the 100 kilos. That shows the attention to detail. Sebastian

:48:15. > :48:20.Vettel is there with his engineer, trying to understand what he can

:48:21. > :48:28.learn about managing these new power units. Nico Rosberg has opened up an

:48:29. > :48:33.advantage, Daniel Ricciardo in second, Kevin Magnussen in third,

:48:34. > :48:38.Nico Hulkenberg being chased by Fernando Alonso. Valtteri Bottas

:48:39. > :48:44.getting past Pastor Maldonado. He moves up into 11th place, not far

:48:45. > :48:50.outside the points, after the rim breaking incident. The suspension

:48:51. > :49:00.seems to have held up. If you get lucky, if the design is strong

:49:01. > :49:05.enough, it will take it. Maybe Fernando Alonso is happy to sit in

:49:06. > :49:08.the slipstream. You may think it is helpful from a fuel consumption

:49:09. > :49:13.point of view, but when you talk to the drivers, they say it does not

:49:14. > :49:20.help, because you lose speed in the corner, and you use more fuel in

:49:21. > :49:27.accelerating again. It may not always be a question of sitting

:49:28. > :49:33.under the gearbox. Nico Hulkenberg keeping Fernando Alonso behind him.

:49:34. > :49:39.RADIO: You do not need to save fuel, hit the beats. That is

:49:40. > :49:46.interesting, Daniel Ricciardo is being told, heat the beats, so I

:49:47. > :49:50.presume that means hit the gear change points at the maximum revs

:49:51. > :50:03.allowed. That picks up what we have heard about the safety cars. Where

:50:04. > :50:13.the predefined strategy is, he can use it. All the teams have an audio

:50:14. > :50:22.which peeps when it is time for you to change gear. It can be any noise

:50:23. > :50:29.you want it to be! When they hit that, they pulled the shift pattern.

:50:30. > :50:33.A great battle between Nico Hulkenberg, Fernando Alonso and

:50:34. > :50:43.Jenson Button. These cars deliver... RADIO: It will clean-up.

:50:44. > :50:50.Some graining being reported, the surface of the tyre rippling across

:50:51. > :50:57.the surface. We had the rain overnight, there has not been much

:50:58. > :50:59.rubber to work with. Fernando Alonso chased by Jenson Button, Jenson

:51:00. > :51:05.Button not able to get on terms. Behind them, Jean-Eric Vergne and

:51:06. > :51:11.Kimi Raikkonen, it is settling down into a rhythm. Nick Ross Berg is

:51:12. > :51:18.leading the Grand Prix, looking good for Mercedes. They will not be

:51:19. > :51:25.resting on their long walls. -- resting on their laurels. Let's hear

:51:26. > :51:30.from Lewis Hamilton, he went out early, from pole position.

:51:31. > :51:35.What a shame, what a difficult way to start your season. When did you

:51:36. > :51:42.first think you had a problem? As soon as I left the line, I had a lot

:51:43. > :51:47.less power. I did not really understand it, so I radioed in.

:51:48. > :51:52.People were going past. They asked me to come in, and I said, I am

:51:53. > :51:58.still going. Let's try to figure it out. It was one of the cylinders, I

:51:59. > :52:03.think. Does it hurt when you have had such good reparation? We

:52:04. > :52:10.thought, if anyone, you would still be out there. I just want to tinker

:52:11. > :52:17.about all the work that has gone on in the factory, thinking about the

:52:18. > :52:22.days and nights of stressing, to have the pace at the front, looking

:52:23. > :52:28.so strong, and then to have a small pick-up, it is tough for everyone,

:52:29. > :52:34.but it is the way it is, we are not the only ones. We will bounce back.

:52:35. > :52:40.I wish Nico Hulkenberg -- Nico Rosberg all the best.

:52:41. > :52:45.Lewis Hamilton sounding sanguine about this early retirement. You

:52:46. > :52:51.have got to feel like that, it could happen to anybody, and it will

:52:52. > :52:54.happen to other people. The Lotus cars are together, Romain Grosjean

:52:55. > :53:00.overtaking Pastor Maldonado. He is now up into 13th place. The key

:53:01. > :53:06.thing is that they are both running, which is remarkable, bearing in mind

:53:07. > :53:13.their weekend up until now. Nico Rosberg still opening up the gap, it

:53:14. > :53:17.was 6.9 seconds, over Daniel Ricciardo, it is now 7.9, he has

:53:18. > :53:23.taken another second. Kevin Magnussen trying to avoid debris.

:53:24. > :53:32.That should not cause too many problems. Nico Hulkenberg still at

:53:33. > :53:40.the front of the next Hugh. They are quite comfortable, following the

:53:41. > :53:45.leader. There has been a big spread of top speeds through free

:53:46. > :53:52.practice, the Mercedes powered cars have been comfortably quicker than

:53:53. > :53:58.the other power units, and it looks like Kimi Raikkonen wants to hassle

:53:59. > :54:01.Jean-Eric Vergne. Looking at those speed figures, they are down from

:54:02. > :54:07.qualifying, which is what you would expect, occurs in qualifying, the

:54:08. > :54:13.top speed was 317 kilometres per hour. The amount of fuel on board,

:54:14. > :54:17.the physical mass you are pulling around, and they are restricted to

:54:18. > :54:27.100 kilograms of fuel flow per hour, and 100 kilos for the entire

:54:28. > :54:31.race. For qualifying, you can run that for the individual laps. To

:54:32. > :54:38.make it last for the Grand Prix, you have to reduce the flow. So there is

:54:39. > :54:45.a bit less power available. Valtteri Bottas is up into the top ten,

:54:46. > :54:47.chasing Daniil Kvyat. The Russian is making his debut, Valtteri Bottas in

:54:48. > :54:52.his second full season with Williams, and he is closing up on

:54:53. > :55:03.the Toro Rosso, with the Mercedes powered Williams. The DRS zones are

:55:04. > :55:14.approaching. He can open up the DRS. This will be fairly

:55:15. > :55:19.straightforward. He goes inside, and that is straightforward indeed, no

:55:20. > :55:23.problems at all. And he gets DRS down the next straight, of course.

:55:24. > :55:29.He is having to operate that manually, because of the issues he

:55:30. > :55:32.has. They have a driver over ride in the cockpit, they have to judge the

:55:33. > :55:37.gap to the car in front, rather than getting a signal in the cockpit. He

:55:38. > :55:45.is into ninth place, Valtteri Bottas. Another opportunity to

:55:46. > :55:49.clamber through the field. He did not choose to use the DRS along the

:55:50. > :55:54.next straight. Maybe he did not realise, once you have gone through

:55:55. > :55:59.the activation point, you are able to use it in both straight,

:56:00. > :56:03.irrespective of whether you are behind the car in front. His goal

:56:04. > :56:07.friend is an Olympic swimmer, watching in the background. Cheering

:56:08. > :56:12.him on, as he moves up another place. Let's hope it all comes

:56:13. > :56:18.together for him. We still have a long way to go, not quite at half

:56:19. > :56:26.distance yet. Daniel Ricciardo is holding on in second place. Nico

:56:27. > :56:31.Hulkenberg is still in the front of the queue, they are quite happy to

:56:32. > :56:36.follow it up at around. We might see races like this, where the middle

:56:37. > :56:42.stage just gets a bit drawn out. Kimi Raikkonen has drawn back. He

:56:43. > :56:46.might have had a mistake in the middle sector, 1.5 seconds slower

:56:47. > :56:52.than Jean-Eric Vergne in front. Does he have an issue, or did he just

:56:53. > :56:58.drop back, to try and get some clean air? It was a slower lap, he got a

:56:59. > :57:05.hit earlier on, but it might be disconnected. That was the mistake,

:57:06. > :57:11.Kimi Raikkonen's mistake. That was going down into the chicane, he

:57:12. > :57:15.locks up under braking. We have seen a number of cars struggling with a

:57:16. > :57:20.tail in free practice. We are close to the sea here. It costs quite

:57:21. > :57:27.strongly. It is a decent wind today, not quite as bad as in qualifying or

:57:28. > :57:31.in the third free practice. Kimi Raikkonen has settled back into the

:57:32. > :57:35.rhythm, trying to close the gap to Jean-Eric Vergne. He is having a

:57:36. > :57:44.composed race so far in seventh place. RADIO: I am graining on the

:57:45. > :57:54.left front. Copy that, how are the rears? Also struggling a little bit.

:57:55. > :57:57.Valtteri Bottas closing on Kimi Raikkonen fairly quickly over the

:57:58. > :58:03.last lap or two, but there is still a gap. The beginning of this race

:58:04. > :58:07.was marked by an accident that took out Felipe Massa, it looked to be

:58:08. > :58:13.Kamui Kobayashi that caused it, let's hear from him.

:58:14. > :58:22.A disappointing way to start 2014, it looks like you got tapped by Kimi

:58:23. > :58:30.Raikkonen. It is my mistake. In the winter, it was difficult to handle

:58:31. > :58:33.how much we were struggling to get grip, but it was definitely my

:58:34. > :58:40.mistake. I should have braked earlier, I apologise to Felipe

:58:41. > :58:54.Massa. No problems getting off the line? My position was quite tight. I

:58:55. > :59:00.tried to stop the car. The tyres were too cold summer because we have

:59:01. > :59:04.the extra formation lap. He felt it was his mistake that

:59:05. > :59:07.caused that accident, owning up to it, and it took out Felipe Massa

:59:08. > :59:13.from this Grand Prix. Having seen the performance of the Williams in

:59:14. > :59:19.Valtteri Bottas' hands, it was a shame we could not see what Felipe

:59:20. > :59:22.Massa could do. Fair play to Kamui Kobayashi for admitting to the

:59:23. > :59:31.mistake, not much else he could do, actually. Sometimes, drivers have

:59:32. > :59:35.road coloured spectacles. Nico Rosberg is in the safety car

:59:36. > :59:40.window, and when they come in, they will go for the prime tyre. Looking

:59:41. > :59:50.to get that out of the way early. That could be quite a short stint.

:59:51. > :59:55.It might be we turn this into a pre-stocked race. It is one of those

:59:56. > :00:01.races, the teams have not had enough data in a way -- three stop. I think

:00:02. > :00:07.reacting on the spot is what they have to do, to how the drivers feel

:00:08. > :00:14.the tyres are going and the amount of graining. Rosberg with a 9.5

:00:15. > :00:23.second lead. RADIO: stop the car, stop the car, engine oil pressure.

:00:24. > :00:32.We have lost the other Caterham coming to an early conclusion for

:00:33. > :00:39.Eriksson. Sadly his Caterham debut has come to an end and we have lost

:00:40. > :00:46.both Caterhams from this race. Bianchi is still going for Marussia

:00:47. > :00:50.and Chilton is still now going. He has parked the car in a sensible

:00:51. > :00:57.place, the marshals can recover the car easily. Rosberg, will he take

:00:58. > :01:05.advantage of this? No, he will stay out there. We heard from Kobayashi

:01:06. > :01:12.owning up to the accident with Massa. We can now hear from Massa.

:01:13. > :01:18.This could have been a strong day but sadly you are speaking to me and

:01:19. > :01:24.standing him. It looked like it was Kobayashi's faults. It was a shame.

:01:25. > :01:31.Every time he tries to start like that, it will be the same. It is a

:01:32. > :01:39.shame, doing a careful start. No problems, and, suddenly, somebody

:01:40. > :01:46.hits you like that. I do not see a big difference for what he did today

:01:47. > :01:53.to what Grosjean did. The FIA will look to it. Clearly he wants

:01:54. > :01:58.penalties handed out. It will be investigated after the race. Jenson

:01:59. > :02:03.Button, who moved to six, courtesy of the first pit stops, sitting

:02:04. > :02:10.behind Fernando Alonso. Hulkenberg again locking up the left front. The

:02:11. > :02:16.same part of the track at turn six. There is on June in the circuit as

:02:17. > :02:23.you go under the trees and drop down into the apex. There may be an

:02:24. > :02:26.indication the car is setup stiff at front role. So the rise in the

:02:27. > :02:38.surface, it on loads the inside tire. Tom is with the man who can

:02:39. > :02:42.tell us more about the tyres. He is with the director of the motorsport.

:02:43. > :02:47.We are hearing drivers talking about graining, how surprised you about

:02:48. > :02:51.that? It is not something we have seen in testing but it can happen

:02:52. > :02:55.when temperatures change. We do not know what they have done on the cars

:02:56. > :03:01.over the period of time we have been here. I went to look at Nico

:03:02. > :03:05.Rosberg's tyres and you can see grading that we have not seen

:03:06. > :03:12.before. Will it be a three-stop race? They came in early because of

:03:13. > :03:18.the safety car, so that could take it through to three if they want to

:03:19. > :03:24.push another set. It is looking great, we might see rain, as well.

:03:25. > :03:30.If it is not rain, the temperature is dropping. How does that affect

:03:31. > :03:36.the medium tyre? It will make it harder to use. You might see more

:03:37. > :03:39.graining. For us, it is not excessive, different to what we have

:03:40. > :03:47.been seeing in practice sessions, but it can be managed.

:03:48. > :04:02.That looks something like from Ben Hur! It is the retention device.

:04:03. > :04:09.Maldonado has pulled off. Had been struggling for pace. Lotus into

:04:10. > :04:14.retirement but they have completed more laps than they might have

:04:15. > :04:20.expected, up to 30, after a weekend when just one lap, early on, proved

:04:21. > :04:26.to be a struggle. Turn 12, the high-speed chicane. The car will be

:04:27. > :04:33.recovered quite easily, I am sure no need for a safety car, but yellow

:04:34. > :04:41.flags out, of course. RADIO: we are still planning to stretch out the

:04:42. > :04:45.stint. OK at the moment. Maybe he has worked through the graining

:04:46. > :04:51.phase. We have seen that in the past. It is like a rubber on your

:04:52. > :04:58.pencil, you keep rubbing away and eventually you end up with a thinner

:04:59. > :05:11.gauge of tyre, which loses temperature, but is more resilient.

:05:12. > :05:15.Hulkenberg has been discussed as perhaps a Ferrari driver in the

:05:16. > :05:20.past, did not get the job, had been discussed as a McLaren driver, but

:05:21. > :05:24.Heery is, showing what he can do, back with Force India. He has not

:05:25. > :05:30.been able to stick with one team for more than a year in the past. And he

:05:31. > :05:36.had a gap at Sauber. But at least he is back with the team he knows. It

:05:37. > :05:41.looks like the Ferrari, better package in the corners. The unit

:05:42. > :05:47.keeping him just out of the clutches of Alonso, who is trying to get into

:05:48. > :05:53.position. A little bit wide coming off the high-speed chicane. Having

:05:54. > :06:01.to be careful about that. Behind them, as well, watching out to see

:06:02. > :06:10.if Bottas is closing more on Riker -- Raikkonen. This is opening up a

:06:11. > :06:18.little bit. Hulkenberg, will Alonso be any closer? We can listen to

:06:19. > :06:22.Jenson Button. RADIO: box this lap. He was the first to make a pit stop

:06:23. > :06:32.on the safety car early on, although they stopped at the same time. He

:06:33. > :06:36.has gone for the medium. That certainly has the capability of

:06:37. > :06:41.going to the end. It is likely to be that much slower than the soft, so

:06:42. > :06:48.it is unlikely, unless McLaren can make it work, that he will go to the

:06:49. > :06:54.end on this tyre. He did 21 laps on the option. It looks like the front

:06:55. > :07:00.of his nose is broken. Normally there is a shroud across the front.

:07:01. > :07:04.Whether that is from contact on track, or whether he has done it

:07:05. > :07:07.coming in from the pit stop. They have not had the chance to do

:07:08. > :07:17.practice pit stops. I think the damage was done at the stop. The

:07:18. > :07:23.nose falls off. That is purely for aesthetic 's, nothing to do with

:07:24. > :07:29.structure. Jenson will get some air cooling on his feet. That had not

:07:30. > :07:34.been thought through with the Flex on the jack as it comes down.

:07:35. > :07:41.Hulkenberg, we will see if he stays with the softer tyre. It was a good

:07:42. > :07:48.stint, fending off Alonso. Followed by the Toro Rosso. That is

:07:49. > :07:53.particularly unusual, the end on that car. There are new regulations

:07:54. > :08:03.on the new lower front end. He has gone for the harder tyre. You can

:08:04. > :08:13.see which designers were fans of the Muppets! On-board with Bottas.

:08:14. > :08:19.Raikkonen was locking up ahead of him. You can see he is closer. And

:08:20. > :08:25.the back-end of Raikkonen's car is moving around. Now Alonso has been

:08:26. > :08:30.released from the dirty air of the Force India, he has matched the lap

:08:31. > :08:36.time of Rosberg, doing a personal best, a second quicker than Magnuson

:08:37. > :08:37.ahead of him. It looks like he is getting a move on -- Kevin

:08:38. > :08:56.Magnussen. Jenson Button has just gone fastest

:08:57. > :09:00.in the middle sector of the track. They start with less fuel than they

:09:01. > :09:07.used to. It means the drop-off between qualifying and the race is

:09:08. > :09:12.not as great as previously. Raikkonen... Bottas got a chance.

:09:13. > :09:22.Another estate from Kimi Raikkonen after breaking. -- another mistake

:09:23. > :09:30.after braking. Bottas is up into fifth now. We know from testing but

:09:31. > :09:36.Raikkonen has not been happy with the feel of the braking system. Here

:09:37. > :09:41.we go again down to the braking zone. Runs out onto the artificial

:09:42. > :09:50.grass. Fairly straightforward the Bottas. -- for Bottas. He locked up

:09:51. > :09:59.the front left, which is unusual, you'd normally start to lock inside

:10:00. > :10:05.wheel. Alonso has been running behind Hulkenberg. We will see what

:10:06. > :10:09.happens when he rejoins in relation to Hulkenberg. The Force India will

:10:10. > :10:16.be coming down the straight but this is good for Alonso. It looks like he

:10:17. > :10:20.has got out in front of the Force India and not far behind the

:10:21. > :10:29.McLaren. Hulkenberg is on a run with a great opportunity. That was a

:10:30. > :10:33.crucial manoeuvre. He moved to the outside and Alonso protected the

:10:34. > :10:40.inside, resilient from Alonso. Squeezing him. He just hung onto it.

:10:41. > :10:43.I thought he would try to hold it around the outside but Alonso gave

:10:44. > :10:53.him a little bit of a squeeze. Quality driving. Alonso wanted it so

:10:54. > :10:58.much. RADIO: Nico be aware there might be light rain around but it is

:10:59. > :11:05.not expected to get wet. Maybe a couple of drops. Planning to

:11:06. > :11:15.continue the stint at the moment. I love it when you get the dry rain,

:11:16. > :11:21.the wet stuff is so annoying! Daniel Ricciardo from second position.

:11:22. > :11:28.Looking to perhaps make it to the end of the harder compound. He puts

:11:29. > :11:32.the medium on and away he goes. The other teams will monitor that

:11:33. > :11:38.progress. Bottas with Raikkonen chasing him. Again, a lock-up.

:11:39. > :11:50.Trying to win back some of the damage to Bottas. Another set of

:11:51. > :11:59.mediums for Toro Rosso. Still behind Bottas. Ferrari not able to be gain

:12:00. > :12:03.ground on the pit stop. Toro Rosso going out on the options.

:12:04. > :12:14.Raikkonen, incredible pit stop time. 2.2 seconds. That is their second

:12:15. > :12:17.pit stop. They could go to the end if the medium tyres deliver the

:12:18. > :12:27.performance they want. On-board with Bottas. He had a difficult dispatch

:12:28. > :12:36.from the box. Good work from the Williams team. Jenson Button is now

:12:37. > :12:52.in fourth. RADIO: box this lap, confirm. Rosberg has yet to make a

:12:53. > :12:57.pit stop. Magnuson is coming in. -- Kevin Magnussen. So far, he has not

:12:58. > :13:01.put a wheel wrong in his Grand Prix debut. Could he be heading for a

:13:02. > :13:10.podium finish? Fingers are looking good. The media -- medium tyre is

:13:11. > :13:18.on. Ricciardo is coming down the straight. In the background, you can

:13:19. > :13:24.see Jenson Button. What a lifting performance from McLaren. How much

:13:25. > :13:28.they struggled and failed to get a podium last year. Now, they are on

:13:29. > :13:35.for at least one podium and might get two. It is probably too early to

:13:36. > :14:07.say the broad effects. -- effect. We can ride with Rosberg as he heads

:14:08. > :14:18.into the pits. That sounds like a bag of nails on the speed limiter.

:14:19. > :14:24.54.5. He was deliberate in his positioning of the car. Pushing more

:14:25. > :14:31.to the left than normal. It was a lovely stop. Absolute perfection

:14:32. > :14:38.from the team. Nico Rosberg, his lead intact. Things are looking good

:14:39. > :14:43.for him. Who will know if they will all make it to the end? Wilbur

:14:44. > :14:54.Gremlins strike before the chequered flag? -- will the Gremlins strike?

:14:55. > :14:58.Red Bull still holding in, despite worries about speed and reliability.

:14:59. > :15:07.We can take another look at the stop. Broke some of the shroud, the

:15:08. > :15:12.front right. Watch it get broken. Again, these are things you only

:15:13. > :15:17.find out in the field. You would not put on a wheel with such energy and

:15:18. > :15:29.intensity in free practice as in the race. It is unlikely to do too much

:15:30. > :15:33.damage to the cooling inside. Jenson Button is 4.7 seconds behind his

:15:34. > :15:40.team-mate, he has a bit of work to do to catch up to Kevin Magnussen.

:15:41. > :15:43.He started outside the top ten, so this has been good progress from the

:15:44. > :15:48.man who has won here three times in the past. On board with Daniil

:15:49. > :15:57.Kvyat, in 10th place. Behind Kimi Raikkonen. All of them on a

:15:58. > :16:06.relatively new set of tyres. Toro Rosso seem to have built a pretty

:16:07. > :16:11.good car. RADIO: You are racing Kevin for third place, the fuel is

:16:12. > :16:18.good. That is to Jenson Button, he is now racing his own team-mate. His

:16:19. > :16:22.team-mate is closing the gap to Daniel Ricciardo, half a second a

:16:23. > :16:27.lap quicker. He was 2.2 seconds behind, he now has it down to 1.1

:16:28. > :16:33.seconds. He is piling the pressure on the Red Bull. Valtteri Bottas has

:16:34. > :16:39.just been told that some of the cars ahead of him have quite high

:16:40. > :16:45.degradation on their medium compound tyres. They are going off quite

:16:46. > :16:51.quickly. He is being told, do not kill this set of tyres. Daniil Kvyat

:16:52. > :16:57.getting closer to the back of Kimi Raikkonen. Kimi Raikkonen seems to

:16:58. > :17:04.be struggling a bit. He does not look happy with the brake balance of

:17:05. > :17:09.the car. Whether it was affected by the hit early on, I do not know.

:17:10. > :17:15.They harvest the energy into the system across the rear axle using a

:17:16. > :17:19.motor generator unit, and if it is not functioning correctly, it will

:17:20. > :17:24.affect the deceleration. If it is not slowing down so much, it has a

:17:25. > :17:33.tendency to lock up the front rail -- from wheel. Will you gain most of

:17:34. > :17:36.your lap time is on entry speed, and like-for-like engine, you can only

:17:37. > :17:40.accelerate as fast as another driver, but you gain your time in

:17:41. > :17:47.the braking zones, Roland your car into the corners. Struggling like

:17:48. > :17:52.that, he will be easy pickings for Daniil Kvyat, any time soon. That

:17:53. > :17:58.would be something, Daniil Kvyat looking to score points on his

:17:59. > :18:02.debut. As is Kevin Magnussen, in third place currently, and lapping

:18:03. > :18:06.very consistently, and a bit quicker on that last lap than Jenson Button.

:18:07. > :18:12.Jenson Button stopped earlier than everyone else, but they are lapping

:18:13. > :18:18.very evenly at this stage. Daniel Ricciardo has done his own best lap

:18:19. > :18:25.so far. The race lead has now built to 16.5 seconds, Tom. It is not only

:18:26. > :18:29.the braking system that is Kimi Raikkonen's problem, he is on the

:18:30. > :18:35.medium tyre, and Daniil Kvyat is on the soft tyre. That is worth 1.2

:18:36. > :18:39.seconds a lap at the moment. It will be very difficult for Kimi Raikkonen

:18:40. > :18:44.to stay ahead. Much more grip on the soft tyres. That will give Daniil

:18:45. > :18:49.Kvyat the chance to overtake Kimi Raikkonen. What a thing that must

:18:50. > :18:54.feel like for the young man, in his first ever Grand Prix, about to go

:18:55. > :19:00.wheel to wheel with the 2007 world champion, Kimi Raikkonen. Kimi

:19:01. > :19:06.Raikkonen struggles his way around. Daniil Kvyat is AGP three champion,

:19:07. > :19:09.but the length of race is one of the key differences, when you race in

:19:10. > :19:16.the lower degrees, you never go this long. Formula 1 cars, although they

:19:17. > :19:23.are generating higher lateral loads and longitudinal loads, the highest

:19:24. > :19:31.pressure you will pull is over five G. Kevin Magnussen getting ever

:19:32. > :19:39.closer, more .4 seconds quicker on that last lap, and he is within the

:19:40. > :19:44.DRS zone now. He is really going for it, Kevin Magnussen. He is not

:19:45. > :19:48.settling for third place, he is attacking for second place. What a

:19:49. > :19:54.debut this is turning out to be for Kevin Magnussen and Daniel Ricciardo

:19:55. > :19:59.has got his mirrors filled with the Danish driver, the son of the driver

:20:00. > :20:05.who made his debut for McLaren in the mid-90s, he went on to race for

:20:06. > :20:13.the Stuart team. Nowadays, he is a sports car racer. Kevin Magnussen

:20:14. > :20:17.starting in some style. He won the Renault 3.5 championship last year

:20:18. > :20:24.in fine style, he has got good credentials, racing is in his blood.

:20:25. > :20:29.I noticed the red light flashing on Jean-Eric Vergne's car. That is a

:20:30. > :20:34.new introduction, it is to do with the electric system, when it is not

:20:35. > :20:39.supplying power, to warn the driver behind that that car might lose a

:20:40. > :20:44.bit of speed. You just saw the red light flashing, it indicates to the

:20:45. > :20:49.driver behind that he is not using the full power. It is like catnip,

:20:50. > :20:55.it tells you the guy in front has harnessing issues in the latter part

:20:56. > :21:00.of the straight. Interesting to see if we get a rear view from Valtteri

:21:01. > :21:04.Bottas. He is looking well positioned to get past Jean-Eric

:21:05. > :21:10.Vergne. Let's keep an eye on Daniil Kvyat. Romain Grosjean has pulled

:21:11. > :21:16.off, a different part of the circuit from Pastor Maldonado, and both

:21:17. > :21:22.Lotus cars are off, their test session has come to an end. He has

:21:23. > :21:27.pulled over well to the slot. In the middle of the picture, the man who

:21:28. > :21:31.was running the latest team, now the racing director at McLaren. Ron

:21:32. > :21:36.Dennis said he would keep clear of the pit wall, but he has not managed

:21:37. > :21:46.that. He is a race at heart, the instinct has taken over. RADIO: We

:21:47. > :21:50.do not think he has the same feel. Nobody really knows, nobody has any

:21:51. > :21:56.data on their rivals' engines. They just have to guess. They go past the

:21:57. > :22:01.stricken car of Romain Grosjean. Valtteri Bottas trying to make a

:22:02. > :22:11.move on Jean-Eric Vergne. It does not look close enough on this lap.

:22:12. > :22:17.Daniil Kvyat in 10th place on the option tyre, if he can keep that

:22:18. > :22:25.tidy, he has got an advantage behind Kimi Raikkonen. On his debut, he is

:22:26. > :22:28.only four seconds behind his more experienced team-mate, Jean-Eric

:22:29. > :22:35.Vergne, on the other tyre, so a great debut for the young Russian.

:22:36. > :22:40.Yes, good stuff. We are on lap 46 and 57. The medium tyre is

:22:41. > :22:43.delivering reasonable performance, and it looks as though they should

:22:44. > :22:52.be able to take it to the end of the race. Romain Grosjean lost the

:22:53. > :23:00.energy system that recovers energy under braking, and it was the same

:23:01. > :23:03.on Pastor Maldonado's car. RADIO: Protect rear tyres, we may be racing

:23:04. > :23:09.Jenson Button at the end of the race. Indeed, he has moved up from

:23:10. > :23:15.10th place on the grid, he started in 10th place, he gained a place

:23:16. > :23:22.because of Valtteri Bottas having the gearbox penalty. He said,

:23:23. > :23:27.protect your tyres on corner 14, that is a fairly straightforward,

:23:28. > :23:31.fast corner. I would have thought that was more about the front left

:23:32. > :23:38.tyre. Interesting that McLaren are saying... A big slide for Jean-Eric

:23:39. > :23:44.Vergne, that will give Valtteri Bottas a chance. It really snapped

:23:45. > :23:48.on him. When your energy system is not delivering consistent power,

:23:49. > :23:52.that is what happens, a huge kick of electrical power. That is what we

:23:53. > :24:00.will see in a few of these early races. It was well held. A full

:24:01. > :24:04.opposite lock, and Valtteri Bottas nipped through on the inside, he

:24:05. > :24:11.gained another place, up to seventh place. What he could have done if he

:24:12. > :24:15.had not slapped the wall earlier. He put a wheel on the grass, that was a

:24:16. > :24:22.driver error. He just overran the track limit. Yes, clearly, the left

:24:23. > :24:27.rear on the grass, that was a bit of a mistake. I must apologise to the

:24:28. > :24:34.new energy recovery systems and power units, blaming them! A good,

:24:35. > :24:40.old-fashioned driver mistake. It moves Valtteri Bottas up into

:24:41. > :24:45.seventh place, he is only 17 -- 1.7 seconds behind Nico Hulkenberg. The

:24:46. > :24:53.letters gets pushed away on the right-hand side. Daniel Ricciardo,

:24:54. > :24:56.still in second place, from Kevin Magnussen, who is driving

:24:57. > :25:04.beautifully. Can he get past the Red Bull? There is Kimi Raikkonen.

:25:05. > :25:11.RADIO: Valtteri Bottas is through, so I expect you will be coming under

:25:12. > :25:16.attack from him soon. Great stuff, let's say that for overtaking Nico

:25:17. > :25:22.Hulkenberg. They do have an overtaking load on the engines, it

:25:23. > :25:26.is not the same boost as last year, but it gives them the optimum power

:25:27. > :25:31.that they can have. Kimi Raikkonen is still tucked in behind Jean-Eric

:25:32. > :25:35.Vergne. He has closed the gap because of Jean-Eric Vergne's

:25:36. > :25:40.mistake, it has given him a chance to get closer behind the Toro Rosso.

:25:41. > :25:46.I wonder whether Jean-Eric Vergne is struggling a bit. Kimi Raikkonen in

:25:47. > :25:50.ninth place currently. Fernando Alonso is going along in fifth

:25:51. > :25:54.place. Ferrari holding the reliability together, but not

:25:55. > :26:01.showing the attacking pace that they would have expected. At this stage,

:26:02. > :26:05.with all of the problems we have seen in preseason, anybody who is

:26:06. > :26:08.still running at this stage is pleasantly surprised, and if they

:26:09. > :26:14.can get it to the chequered flag, they will take it. The big surprise

:26:15. > :26:21.is that Daniel Ricciardo is still running. Red Bull have never done a

:26:22. > :26:31.race run. RADIO: Daniel Ricciardo is struggling. McLaren are picking up

:26:32. > :26:39.that he is struggling. The crossbow is doing 1:32, Daniel Ricciardo,

:26:40. > :26:47.1:35. This is what we expected, that Mercedes would have a big edge, but

:26:48. > :26:50.Daniel Ricciardo is back into 1:33. Not too much difference to Kevin

:26:51. > :26:57.Magnussen. Jenson Button in fourth place. There is so much we will not

:26:58. > :27:01.know until we hear from the drivers after the race, but it could be a

:27:02. > :27:07.harvesting issue, I can store a total of four megajoules of energy

:27:08. > :27:16.in the batteries. They can deploy to megajoules itch lap, it depends on

:27:17. > :27:21.how they are running their system. The point is, you cannot be

:27:22. > :27:25.competitive if you are not getting power from your storage system, you

:27:26. > :27:36.cannot rely on the engine on its own. Valtteri Bottas is closing the

:27:37. > :27:45.gap to Nico Hulkenberg. RADIO: You are 0.8 quicker than the three cars

:27:46. > :27:50.in front of you. Daniel Ricciardo is ten seconds in front of you now, but

:27:51. > :27:55.he might be struggling. We could see some changes in the last part of the

:27:56. > :27:59.race. We thought that drivers might halt station in the middle part and

:28:00. > :28:04.things will come alive at the end. Three drivers have set personal best

:28:05. > :28:12.times, despite being on the medium tyre, which is holding up well. They

:28:13. > :28:15.have less fuel, now, of course. The lap time from Daniel Ricciardo,

:28:16. > :28:22.another personal best, a fraction faster from Kevin Magnussen behind,

:28:23. > :28:28.and Jenson Button had been quicker on the previous lap, but now he is a

:28:29. > :28:32.fraction slower. The budget tax on board can store up to four

:28:33. > :28:42.megajoules, you can only harvest two of them on each lap. Valtteri Bottas

:28:43. > :28:45.will not be deploying as much. He is having a look, but Nico Hulkenberg

:28:46. > :28:53.saw him. He gave him a bit of space. He just stays in front, but

:28:54. > :28:59.he will not last for long. That will tell us that Williams will not

:29:00. > :29:03.deploy as much electrical energy on a given lap. That allows them to

:29:04. > :29:10.charge more into the system, and they can build it up towards the

:29:11. > :29:15.full four megajoules to deploy for just over 33 seconds on the lap.

:29:16. > :29:25.That is more than we saw on the old curse system, 80 horsepower for 6.7

:29:26. > :29:30.seconds. Bottas, in seventh place, that would be the best place for

:29:31. > :29:35.him. We had eighth place in the USA last year, but it was a miserable

:29:36. > :29:41.season for Williams last year. Their worst in TV history. Now they have a

:29:42. > :29:45.real chance of scoring decent points. It would be more points if

:29:46. > :29:51.he finishes where he is than they scored in the entire season last

:29:52. > :30:05.year, that is if he is in seventh place. Fantastic for Bottas. But he

:30:06. > :30:10.has got to keep going. Did Bottas get past Hulkenberg? He went for the

:30:11. > :30:19.move and yes, he did. Bottas has moved up into second place.

:30:20. > :30:28.It is easy to overshoot when you go down the inside into Turn 1 and find

:30:29. > :30:34.yourself compromised at the apex. I do not think he will get near a

:30:35. > :30:39.Alonso. RADIO: Daniel, you are doing a good job. The fuel is good.

:30:40. > :30:45.Ricciardo is doing everything required of him. This is still a

:30:46. > :30:49.sensational performance when you bear in mind it is his first run

:30:50. > :30:55.with a team having moved from Toro Rosso. Still a good day for Toro

:30:56. > :31:01.Rosso, because they have both their cars running in the top ten

:31:02. > :31:06.currently. Jean-Eric Vergne in eighth and Daniil Kvyat intent. Red

:31:07. > :31:11.Bull Las Sebastian Vettel but there are other car is going well and the

:31:12. > :31:17.sister team is also performing on this debut race of the new season.

:31:18. > :31:20.Ricciardo has to keep his concentration because Magnussen is

:31:21. > :31:31.hunting him down. Jenson Button further back, 5.1 seconds. RADIO:

:31:32. > :31:42.yellowed T6 for the -- Chi six for the lap. -- G6. He will not be

:31:43. > :31:46.deploying as much storage in the batteries, trying to get closer to

:31:47. > :31:51.maximum store and that will give them more power available around the

:31:52. > :31:55.lab and try to get them into a position to overtake. You can see

:31:56. > :32:01.the effect when they go into the more conservative mode. Dropping

:32:02. > :32:07.back from Ricciardo. There are more cars running than expected with four

:32:08. > :32:12.laps to go. 14 are still running with Rosberg leading, Ricciardo

:32:13. > :32:24.second, Magnussen third, Jenson Button fourth, Alonso fifth. Bottas

:32:25. > :32:36.in six, Sergio Perez is 11th in the Force India.

:32:37. > :32:43.Max Chilton still going, he will try to look to continue the race

:32:44. > :32:49.finishing record, which will be a good achievement. And 14th place for

:32:50. > :32:53.one of the smaller teams, that is quite important. 13th last year gave

:32:54. > :33:00.Marussia 10th in the constructors' title. One or two retirements at

:33:01. > :33:04.this point would help Max Chilton. He would probably want to be higher

:33:05. > :33:11.than 14th, but still a good start to the season for them. RADIO: Daniel,

:33:12. > :33:24.we need to keep up the pace. Pull away from him. Just do it, just get

:33:25. > :33:30.on with it X -- get on with it! They know these messages are being played

:33:31. > :33:37.out. As well as being useful for us, strategically, it helps engineers

:33:38. > :33:43.and drivers in the teams. Rosberg, who we have not seen much of

:33:44. > :33:47.recently, 23 seconds ahead. Mercedes dominating with one car, even if

:33:48. > :33:53.they did lose Lewis Hamilton so early. Racing is not only winning

:33:54. > :33:58.the Grand Prix but wedding with a close enough gap for second place

:33:59. > :34:06.that you have TV coverage. The sponsors are getting nothing right

:34:07. > :34:15.now. I think they will take the win! He is heading for the 25 points

:34:16. > :34:19.today. Nico Rosberg. Looking from the back of Jean-Eric Vergne to

:34:20. > :34:26.Raikkonen. He did get round, Raikkonen. That puts him into

:34:27. > :34:43.eighth. He locked up. Unlucky for the Frenchman. A couple of errors

:34:44. > :34:51.from Vergne. RADIO: yellow G3. Three laps to go. They are unleashing what

:34:52. > :34:56.they have. Handing over to the driver. Go hunt him down. At Toro

:34:57. > :35:07.Rosso, Jean-Eric Vergne has been told that Daniil Kvyat is going and

:35:08. > :35:13.not to hold him up. He has managed his tyres well enough to eat the

:35:14. > :35:17.advantage out of the soft tyres. We'll Ricciardo sustained second

:35:18. > :35:22.place and hold off Kevin Magnussen? We know he has turned it up in the

:35:23. > :35:27.cockpit to give him maximum performance for the remaining two

:35:28. > :35:32.laps. The crowd are getting excited. Ricciardo heading for what would be

:35:33. > :35:37.his first podium. That is something Mark Webber never achieved in

:35:38. > :35:43.Melbourne. He got a podium at pretty much every other race he raced

:35:44. > :35:49.regularly, but not here. He appeared on it when he finished fifth, but

:35:50. > :35:55.never in the top three. What a story if Ricciardo can do this. I have

:35:56. > :36:00.thoroughly enjoyed the opening race. There are so many unknowns. The

:36:01. > :36:06.emergence of these two great talents, getting their chance to

:36:07. > :36:10.shine in top teams. And another one not shining so highly but in the

:36:11. > :36:15.points is Daniil Kvyat in his debut and I believe, if he stays in 10th,

:36:16. > :36:21.he will be the youngest points scorer, beating Sebastian Vettel,

:36:22. > :36:26.because he is younger than when Vettel made his debut at the US

:36:27. > :36:32.Grand Prix. That would be a story in itself. These two are so

:36:33. > :36:37.professional. Such a solid job. With Ricciardo, we are not so surprised,

:36:38. > :36:43.we thought he had it coming he just had to prove it. For Magnussen, it

:36:44. > :36:49.is stunning. But nobody can hold a candle to Nico Rosberg, who has been

:36:50. > :36:53.in total control. We know Lewis Hamilton had a problem of the line,

:36:54. > :36:57.but Nico Rosberg jumped into the lead and it has been pretty much a

:36:58. > :37:05.straightforward case of managing the new power units. He has a 24 second

:37:06. > :37:12.lead. What was the largest gap from Sebastian Vettel in Singapore? It

:37:13. > :37:17.was around half a minute. Maybe a slightly bigger gap, but this has

:37:18. > :37:21.been a dominant performance by Nico Rosberg. You would have to think

:37:22. > :37:26.Mercedes have the edge. It will be tough to close the gap. But it is

:37:27. > :37:33.promising for Red Bull to see they have got to this point. For Red

:37:34. > :37:37.Bull, this would be incredible, after the difficulties throughout

:37:38. > :37:41.the season, Vettel might have got out of the Grand Prix, but he will

:37:42. > :37:47.get a massive boost to see Ricciardo come home on the podium. Nico

:37:48. > :37:51.Rosberg finishing of this lap. He has controlled the race and looked

:37:52. > :37:58.at ease. No problems, the car has been reliable. He has been asking

:37:59. > :38:04.the team, how can I make sure it is reliable? They said, get on with it,

:38:05. > :38:09.everything is looking fine. He has the final two corners to complete.

:38:10. > :38:15.He is through the last turn and it has been an outstanding performance.

:38:16. > :38:21.Nico Rosberg wins the Australian Grand Prix for Mercedes. It is his

:38:22. > :38:28.first win in Australia. 29 years since his father won the Adelaide

:38:29. > :38:35.Grand Prix. A great effort by Mercedes, but look at the response

:38:36. > :38:40.from the crowd as Daniel Ricciardo takes his first ever podium finish

:38:41. > :38:46.in Formula One. And Kevin Magnussen is third on his debut, doing exactly

:38:47. > :38:53.what Lewis Hamilton did in 2007. McLaren back on the podium. Jenson

:38:54. > :39:00.Button in four. Alonso, a solid fifth place for Ferrari. Performance

:39:01. > :39:10.to be found, but reliability was strong for them today. RADIO:. Well

:39:11. > :39:18.done, Nico, good job. Come on, guys, brilliant stuff. Brilliant, what a

:39:19. > :39:22.car, unbelievable. It is also the one hundredth race to have been won

:39:23. > :39:31.with Mercedes power. David, you took the first win in the modern era.

:39:32. > :39:39.RADIO: at salute you fantastic, Kevin. That was sensational, all

:39:40. > :39:45.weekend. What else can you say? 21 years old, his debut in Formula One,

:39:46. > :39:48.and he drove perfectly. I did not see any mistakes. McLaren must be

:39:49. > :39:56.leading the Constructors' Championship. There have been so

:39:57. > :40:06.many surprises at this first race. RADIO: thanks, guys. That is really

:40:07. > :40:13.cool. Brilliant, mate, I think we can see your smile from here. Nice

:40:14. > :40:18.job. It has been a long time since an Australian driver has been on the

:40:19. > :40:24.podium at the Australian Grand Prix. When it was a non-championship

:40:25. > :40:29.event, it was won by Alan Jones, but as a world championship event, the

:40:30. > :40:33.first time at Australian driver has appeared on the podium. Absolutely

:40:34. > :40:39.fantastic. Rosberg was dominant. But the stories behind it are

:40:40. > :40:46.fascinating. Ricciardo, his first podium. And Red Bull getting to the

:40:47. > :40:50.end. Magnussen, a stunning third. Bottas, fighting his way up having

:40:51. > :40:57.hit the wall and breaking a wheel rim. The two Toro Rossos in the

:40:58. > :41:09.points. Daniil Kvyat I believe the youngest points finisher. A long

:41:10. > :41:13.list of retirements. Kevin Magnussen. Denmark celebrates. Your

:41:14. > :41:31.man is up there. Finishing in second. CHEERING. Listen to that.

:41:32. > :41:35.The smile shines. That is from Perth to Melbourne. He comes from Perth,

:41:36. > :41:42.but his performance has been delivered here in Melbourne. Rosberg

:41:43. > :41:47.comes up to the top spots. That is a fascinating podium. You could have

:41:48. > :41:54.predicted that? A stunning first podium. A dominant win for Nico

:41:55. > :41:58.Rosberg. But fascination throughout the fields. Rookies coming strong.

:41:59. > :42:05.New names to look out for in Formula One. The technology is still raw,

:42:06. > :42:20.but the history books will record that Nico Rosberg was the first

:42:21. > :42:27.winner in fully hybrid Formula One. CHEERING.

:42:28. > :42:30.Great scenes from the Mercedes team and a masterful performance from

:42:31. > :42:37.Nico Rosberg. How special was that victory? So exciting, such an

:42:38. > :42:41.exciting time. My car was so fast. It is such a pleasure to have such a

:42:42. > :42:51.fast car and the car Mercedes have given me, spectacular. Reliability

:42:52. > :42:58.was on the edge, but it held and I came through well and got to the end

:42:59. > :43:02.well, no problems. We heard your team-mate had a problem before going

:43:03. > :43:08.to the great, were you aware of that? You had an amazing start? I

:43:09. > :43:16.was not aware of anything. I focused on my own thing. I had a ballistic

:43:17. > :43:21.start. It was perfect. Thanks to the clutch setting. I nailed the first

:43:22. > :43:27.part and got it right. It worked out fantastically. It was a great

:43:28. > :43:33.kick-start. You talked about reliability and race distance, doing

:43:34. > :43:37.it was a feat for any team. Was it the case of taking its lap by lap?

:43:38. > :43:45.He kept saying, is there anything I can do? As a driver I can help with

:43:46. > :43:50.reliability, taking care of the engine and gearbox. There are things

:43:51. > :43:54.I can do, which I was doing, trying to make the most of it. But I had to

:43:55. > :43:59.push because the tyres were getting cold and I had to push to keep them

:44:00. > :44:08.warm. It was not as easy as it looked. Stay focused all the time.

:44:09. > :44:13.It worked out. 2013-2014, the driving pleasure, any difference?

:44:14. > :44:18.Driving pleasure, I have got used to it. The first day I was disappointed

:44:19. > :44:22.because I want to go faster every year and these cars are slower

:44:23. > :44:26.because of regulations. Now I have forgotten what the old ones were

:44:27. > :44:32.like and it is now a pleasure to drive. It is balanced and quick and

:44:33. > :44:37.feels quick. There is not any more feed to think about as a driver with

:44:38. > :44:42.these cars? Definitely there is a lot to think about, there is so much

:44:43. > :44:48.new stuff going on. My engineer talking all the time, giving me new

:44:49. > :44:52.settings, and the hybrid power settings, how much electronic boost

:44:53. > :44:58.I am getting and how much I am saving. It is a big mission. A

:44:59. > :45:11.fantastic mission today. Enjoy your win. The hardest working driver out

:45:12. > :45:15.there, congratulations for you had to have your wits about you from the

:45:16. > :45:22.start. Yes, this interview is a bit too

:45:23. > :45:27.soon after the race, I was disappointed that my mistake. I need

:45:28. > :45:33.to make sure it does not happen again, I was pushing too hard, but

:45:34. > :45:40.as a team, this result is mega. We have more points than last year. The

:45:41. > :45:47.pace was so good. We are definitely getting there. Can we go back to the

:45:48. > :45:54.start? It was quite incident filled. You came very close, you had to know

:45:55. > :46:03.what was going on. I had a good start, a good bite from the tyres. I

:46:04. > :46:16.chose to take the outside, and then I saw a green car flying. I managed

:46:17. > :46:25.to avoid it. Another position. That is Kimi Raikkonen. It was nice, fair

:46:26. > :46:31.racing. We left room. We are just going to see your mistake, talk us

:46:32. > :46:38.through this. A small snap just before the wall. Is that because of

:46:39. > :46:44.the surge of power? We talk about the torque. There was a lot more

:46:45. > :46:57.snap from the rear of the car than last year. A nice pass here, the

:46:58. > :47:02.DRS. Talk us through this. If we look at the Mercedes engines

:47:03. > :47:07.impaired to Renault and Ferrari, we can see that Mercedes engines give a

:47:08. > :47:14.small advantage, the straight-line speed is very good. Thank you to

:47:15. > :47:20.them, well done! The snap that you had before you hit the wall, you

:47:21. > :47:24.could have been on the podium, because you came back to sixth

:47:25. > :47:31.place. An incredible result, when you think about what you had today.

:47:32. > :47:36.Yes, I had to reset my race, I went back to the starting point. I tried

:47:37. > :47:42.to make up as much as I could, to make up for my mistake. After that,

:47:43. > :47:49.it was the most we could do. It could have been better. Very

:47:50. > :47:54.positive, looking forward. It will be interesting, the next race.

:47:55. > :48:06.Fourth place today, a positive start? Yes, a very positive start.

:48:07. > :48:12.Yesterday was very frustrating, the pace was very good in the wet

:48:13. > :48:16.conditions. A really fun race. The start was tough, cars everywhere, it

:48:17. > :48:21.was mayhem, but a good call on the first pit stop, and the guys did an

:48:22. > :48:26.amazing job on the pit stops. Very quick. We did knock at the front end

:48:27. > :48:33.off a little bit, but a really good job. A great job by Kevin to get a

:48:34. > :48:38.podium in his first Grand Prix. Third place and fourth place. I

:48:39. > :48:43.enjoyed the last stint, I could use as much fuel as I wanted, and I

:48:44. > :48:46.hammered it. A good race for us, and leading the constructors

:48:47. > :48:52.championship, I did not think we would be. Presumably you got a bit

:48:53. > :49:01.of a foot cooling from the nose coming off. It was very cold! The

:49:02. > :49:08.balance does change. It might have been because I was on a different

:49:09. > :49:12.tyre, but it is all part of the ever dynamic system. It was not very

:49:13. > :49:17.clean, but a great result, and it is a great way to start the system. We

:49:18. > :49:22.have some upgrades for Malaysia, so hopefully we can be good in terms of

:49:23. > :49:28.outright pace. The last minute call to come into the pits, was that you

:49:29. > :49:35.talking to the engineer? They said something before. They said, yes,

:49:36. > :49:40.you can come in. I just about got it in. That gave me free places, so it

:49:41. > :49:47.was a really good call, I am happy to have made it. It is good to see

:49:48. > :49:54.you smiling, it has been a difficult winter, has it been a tough

:49:55. > :49:59.weekend? Yes, as anyone can imagine. We all go through this pain at some

:50:00. > :50:04.point in our lives. But I have got great people around me, I have great

:50:05. > :50:08.memories that will stay with me forever of my career and life with

:50:09. > :50:14.my old boy. It has been a special weekend, so much support from family

:50:15. > :50:17.and friends, and the whole paddock, a lot of people, including the

:50:18. > :50:25.mechanics, has had a picture by John. A special weekend. He will

:50:26. > :50:29.have a big smile on his face, knowing that everybody is thinking

:50:30. > :50:34.about him. It is good to see you smiling. McLaren back on the podium,

:50:35. > :50:40.Devin Magnusson is third on his debut!

:50:41. > :50:44.Kevin Magnussen takes his first ever podium in his first ever Formula 1

:50:45. > :50:51.race, the first Danish driver to stand on a Formula 1 podium. I

:50:52. > :50:58.cannot believe it. That is my honest answer. I have just done my first

:50:59. > :51:03.Formula 1 race, I went on the podium, and I did it with McLaren.

:51:04. > :51:08.It is unreal. It is exactly my dream. Not exactly, because there

:51:09. > :51:15.are two more places to go, but it is unreal. It is a pretty good start!

:51:16. > :51:20.At no point have you looked phased, or weekend. You had a hairy moment

:51:21. > :51:31.coming off the line, and you kept it together. It was scary, but I kept

:51:32. > :51:35.it together. What was going on? I span on one wheel, the car turned to

:51:36. > :51:43.the left. The initial start was all right. When I went a bit more on the

:51:44. > :51:50.power, the car rotated. A bit of a moment there! A great job by the

:51:51. > :51:56.team, we came here with a car that did not really behave that well, and

:51:57. > :52:01.we came out with a car that was close to perfect. Can you describe

:52:02. > :52:11.the experience of driving that car today? We are learning all the time.

:52:12. > :52:15.In this race, which ride to go out and do the best we could. It was

:52:16. > :52:21.hard to know what to expect. Yesterday, we qualified in the wet,

:52:22. > :52:26.we looked good, but you never know, the other guys might not have pushed

:52:27. > :52:30.so hard. But the feeling was good. In the wet, the car felt good as

:52:31. > :52:36.well, and we qualified in fourth place. We had no idea what to

:52:37. > :52:40.expect. I came off the line, the first lap I was in third place, I

:52:41. > :52:47.thought, this is good, and I kept it there. Nico Hulkenberg was putting

:52:48. > :52:52.pressure on for the first couple of laps, then he started to pull away.

:52:53. > :53:00.I kept it home, and the car kept being pretty good. I adjusted it a

:53:01. > :53:05.bit, and it worked so nicely. What was the biggest difficulty? The

:53:06. > :53:09.safety car took some of the heat out of the energy, physically, you

:53:10. > :53:13.looked in great shape, but what was the biggest challenge? The biggest

:53:14. > :53:19.challenge was when to go for Daniel. We can do so much with the

:53:20. > :53:24.car to give an advantage, we can turn the engine up, it gives you so

:53:25. > :53:30.much speed, we did not fuel save that much, it was better than we

:53:31. > :53:37.expected. But you can do so much and gain such a big advantage, so when

:53:38. > :53:41.to go for that is a difficult thing. I did not quite have enough speed to

:53:42. > :53:46.get past him, so we came out with the best possible result. We cannot

:53:47. > :53:52.wait to see where you go from here, congratulations, what an amazing

:53:53. > :53:57.debut. Daniel Ricciardo, your first ever

:53:58. > :54:07.podium, on your debut for Red Bull. Has it sunk in? A bit harder! All

:54:08. > :54:14.right then! It is slowly sinking in, but not completely. Just walking

:54:15. > :54:18.onto the podium was an unbelievable feeling, just to see everyone out

:54:19. > :54:23.there. It has been a while since I stood on a podium. Not informal one,

:54:24. > :54:29.but in previous categories, about three years. Even that had to be

:54:30. > :54:35.refreshed. Really nice. A dream start to your career, and you did

:54:36. > :54:39.not do many practice starts before the start of this race, but you

:54:40. > :54:47.slotted down nicely, on the inside of Lewis Hamilton. It was not as

:54:48. > :54:51.good as Nico Rosberg's start. But we did quite well, I saw Nico Rosberg

:54:52. > :55:01.fly through. You came from a long way back. Did that surprise you?

:55:02. > :55:08.Yes, a little bit, I do not know! We had done less than ten starts, up

:55:09. > :55:14.until the race. It was nice to get off the line well. It is a touchy

:55:15. > :55:18.subject, sometimes you get a good one, sometimes you do not, but it

:55:19. > :55:24.was nice to do it in front of all the fans. A couple of days ago, you

:55:25. > :55:27.thought you would not even finish the race, and here you are, second

:55:28. > :55:34.on the podium, what were you thinking? For the first part of the

:55:35. > :55:40.race, I was just focusing on driving and doing my thing. I was going well

:55:41. > :55:45.in second place, focusing on that. As we got past the halfway point, I

:55:46. > :55:49.thought, we have not really done this many consecutive laps before. I

:55:50. > :55:56.was starting to be a bit more pessimistic, if something happens,

:55:57. > :56:00.that is how it is. But just keep focusing and keep seeing the laps

:56:01. > :56:05.take-off. Then, we got within the last ten laps, and I thought, we are

:56:06. > :56:14.that close, get me by. In the end, we did it. We'll the crowd reaction

:56:15. > :56:18.stay with you forever? Definitely. That image that I have got in my

:56:19. > :56:26.head will stay in the memory bank forever. Congratulations, thank you

:56:27. > :56:32.very much. Thank you, guys, that is really

:56:33. > :56:37.cool. We can see your smile from here, nice job!

:56:38. > :56:41.That smile was no more five and a half hours later, he was excluded

:56:42. > :56:46.from the race. A discrepancy was reported, his fuel flow had

:56:47. > :56:50.consistently gone over the limit of 100 kilos per hour. We can get the

:56:51. > :56:56.reaction now from the team principal.

:56:57. > :57:01.Extremely disappointed, quite surprised, and we will appeal.

:57:02. > :57:05.Hopefully, through the appeal process, it will be clear that the

:57:06. > :57:11.car has conformed at all times with the regulations. We have complied

:57:12. > :57:20.fully with the technical regulations. How come you have been

:57:21. > :57:28.disqualified, then? These fuel flow sensors that have been fitted to

:57:29. > :57:33.measure fuel, which have proved problematic through the pit lane

:57:34. > :57:36.since their introduction, there have been discrepancies and they have

:57:37. > :57:42.been unreliable, some cars may have run without them during the race, or

:57:43. > :57:51.they have failed during the race. We had a sensor that was fitted to the

:57:52. > :57:55.car that we believed to be in error. We based our calculation on the fuel

:57:56. > :57:59.that the injectors are providing to the engine, a calibrated piece of

:58:00. > :58:04.equipment that is consistent and standard across the weekend, we have

:58:05. > :58:09.seen zero variants. What are your thoughts?

:58:10. > :58:13.They feel they have a strong case. It will be interesting, because the

:58:14. > :58:20.FIA have to rely on the information they are given from the meat is that

:58:21. > :58:26.they have available. This could be a talking point of the season. I hope

:58:27. > :58:31.not! Could he be reinstated, and this will go away? I think it will

:58:32. > :58:37.go to the Court of Appeal, no question. There are two sides to

:58:38. > :58:41.every argument, but they always knew that there would be a situation like

:58:42. > :58:46.this at some point. It is still a bit disappointing, it took a shine

:58:47. > :58:53.off a superb performance by Daniel Ricciardo. And for the fans. With

:58:54. > :59:04.that in mind, let's confirm the race results. These remain provisional

:59:05. > :59:11.until the outcome of the appeal. Daniel Ricciardo, his first ever

:59:12. > :59:20.race for Red Bull. Kevin Magnussen, on the podium in his debut

:59:21. > :59:26.performance. McClellan later -- McLaren leave behind their awful

:59:27. > :59:34.2013 to lead. Appeals aside, thumbs up for new Formula 1? Reliability

:59:35. > :59:39.was a lot better. It is all about finding solutions to challenges, and

:59:40. > :59:42.we saw a lot of cars finish. A lot more wheel to wheel racing, a lot

:59:43. > :59:49.closer than I thought. Some really tight battles. It was not just a new

:59:50. > :59:54.era of technology, a new era of driver. You will hear the names of

:59:55. > :00:02.Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen and Daniil Kvyat.

:00:03. > :00:08.Catch all of the action with us in Malaysia. It was a big day for Nico

:00:09. > :01:00.Rosberg and the new blood in the new Iraq. See you soon. -- the new era.

:01:01. > :01:05.Next time on Formula 1, race two, Malaysia.
