:01:03. > :01:10.Hello, welcome to Silverstone, it is great to be here at the British

:01:11. > :01:15.Grand Prix. We cannot promise sunshine throughout the weekend, but

:01:16. > :01:20.we have every session live. The first free practice is about to get

:01:21. > :01:23.underway. This is a fantastic venue, the home of British

:01:24. > :01:29.motorsport. I started my career here. This weekend is the 50th

:01:30. > :01:30.anniversary of the running of this race.

:01:31. > :01:35.here. This weekend is the 50th anniversary of We have three British

:01:36. > :01:39.drivers on the grid, only one has a chance of winning, Lewis Hamilton.

:01:40. > :01:45.Jenson Button will be giving everything, as will Max Chilton, but

:01:46. > :01:50.Lewis Hamilton has got the car, and he seems to have the confidence to

:01:51. > :01:55.take the fight to Nico Rosberg. He is overdue a victory after last

:01:56. > :01:56.year. The corral spoke one, and he leads the drivers championship at

:01:57. > :02:15.the moment. Look at Jenson Button, languishing

:02:16. > :02:24.in eighth place. Mercedes have a huge lead. It is great to see Force

:02:25. > :02:30.India in fourth place. Marussia's two points from Jules Bianchi in

:02:31. > :02:36.Monaco. We also have the added excitement of another British driver

:02:37. > :02:42.in the first free practice the first female for over 20 years to be in a

:02:43. > :02:46.Formula One car. Fantastic, she has a very specific testing programme to

:02:47. > :02:53.do. It will not be very easy to look at her lap times in reference to her

:02:54. > :02:57.performance, but it is excellent, she has tested in Barcelona, she is

:02:58. > :03:03.running here and at the German Grand Prix, so we are hoping she has a

:03:04. > :03:07.good day. It is a big weekend, the grandstands are packed, which is

:03:08. > :03:14.great, but pressure on her shoulders. No question about it. But

:03:15. > :03:21.this is the first time, and when she releases the crutch -- clutch, the

:03:22. > :03:25.heart will be beating faster, but at the end of the first lap, it will be

:03:26. > :03:33.business as normal. In the commentary box, then Edwards and

:03:34. > :03:38.Tony. The drivers have got their programmes to go through. Yes, first

:03:39. > :03:47.practice is important for the drivers to get as much data as

:03:48. > :03:55.possible. Caterham will have a development driver, as well Sauber

:03:56. > :04:00.and Force India. You can also get involved through social media. You

:04:01. > :04:07.can tweak us. You can leave a comment on the BBC Sport Facebook

:04:08. > :04:12.page. We conceded campsites, it is always amazing to see how many fans

:04:13. > :04:19.cram in on a Friday. That does not happen at every race weekend! You

:04:20. > :04:23.feel it as a driver, the grandstands are raised up, you get a Mexican

:04:24. > :04:28.wave effect as you go around the circuit, it is a special sensation.

:04:29. > :04:32.The sun is shining, free practice about to start. We will be speaking

:04:33. > :04:38.to you from the pit lane, but let's leave you with them and Tony in the

:04:39. > :04:42.commentary box. About 30 seconds before the green

:04:43. > :04:46.light comes on to start this first practice session of the British

:04:47. > :04:51.Grand Prix weekend. It is great to have you with us. It is lovely to

:04:52. > :04:56.see a fantastic gathering of crowds already, the grandstand opposite

:04:57. > :05:02.looks full, people around every vantage point, a brilliant circuit.

:05:03. > :05:07.It is fantastic, it is one of the great historic venues, one of two

:05:08. > :05:13.ever present ones on the schedule. The other is the Italian Grand Prix.

:05:14. > :05:21.It has a special atmosphere. We are underway. 90 minutes, this session.

:05:22. > :05:25.The times do not apply to anything in terms of position or points or

:05:26. > :05:29.anything to do with the end of the race weekend. It is all about the

:05:30. > :05:35.initial planning, trying to get the cars and the drivers union, getting

:05:36. > :05:40.a feel for what they are going into four qualifying tomorrow afternoon,

:05:41. > :05:49.and the race on Sunday. Kevin Magnussen out in the McLaren. Jenson

:05:50. > :05:54.Button, a glimpse of pink, you will see, because he is wearing a pink

:05:55. > :06:01.helmet this weekend. It is in memory of his father, John, who died last

:06:02. > :06:06.winter. He is putting a lot into the event this weekend, inviting people

:06:07. > :06:11.to wear pink T-shirts in memory of his father, who was famous for

:06:12. > :06:14.wearing pink shirts. Pink shirts and a glass of red wine, he was a

:06:15. > :06:20.fantastic character, I remember him from many years ago, with his

:06:21. > :06:27.rallycross exploits, he loved it. He was a chew -- true enthusiasts, he

:06:28. > :06:34.took Jenson Button karting in his early days, he was an ace engine

:06:35. > :06:39.preparation man, he prepared the engines for Lewis Hamilton as well.

:06:40. > :06:45.You needed him if you are going to win kart races at one stage. Jenson

:06:46. > :06:51.Button's connection with his father was so strong, he said the world

:06:52. > :06:57.champ Richard Trophy should have had his father's name on it. They did

:06:58. > :07:02.everything together, John Wood come to all the races. He was not

:07:03. > :07:07.intrusive, he would not get in the way and try to make decisions. He

:07:08. > :07:12.knew what to do, he stood back and he let his son get on with it. Kevin

:07:13. > :07:16.Magnussen having a wobble, but nothing to worry him. It was quite a

:07:17. > :07:30.big snap! That what came up! Jenson Button is now on circuit, and

:07:31. > :07:35.he will be getting a huge amount of support as he takes to the track. It

:07:36. > :07:42.has not necessarily been coming from within the team. Within the last

:07:43. > :07:50.week or so, Ron Dennis giving him a GR, saying that he could give harder

:07:51. > :07:54.-- he could try harder. Jenson Button did not appreciate that. He

:07:55. > :07:59.said he always gives 100%, he said the whole team needs to be better.

:08:00. > :08:11.He said, I am doing my best, give me a better car. This is the lady we

:08:12. > :08:19.are keeping an eye on. Sebastian Vettel's car, the luminous green

:08:20. > :08:23.paint that the teams often apply in this session to get an idea of

:08:24. > :08:29.airflow over some revised aerodynamic parts. It is a

:08:30. > :08:36.high-speed track, it is a different circuit from the last few, Austria

:08:37. > :08:42.was point and squirt, Montr?al was slow corners, and now we have some

:08:43. > :08:47.of the fastest corners. Lots of high-speed changes of direction,

:08:48. > :08:58.very quick corners, and it is a different setup required. RADIO:

:08:59. > :09:04.Stay out. It is OK. A bit of communication with Kimi Raikkonen.

:09:05. > :09:09.Talking about Red Bull, they have got some paint on the car, because

:09:10. > :09:14.in Austria, one or two things were not working as they hoped. They want

:09:15. > :09:18.to check that out and make sure they have got it right.

:09:19. > :09:21.to check that out and make sure they have got it It is a different track,

:09:22. > :09:26.they will be trying different bits and pieces. The development driver

:09:27. > :09:33.therefore Red Bull, but he is not in the car today. We have the usual Red

:09:34. > :09:38.Bull drivers. Susie Wolff takes to the track. A bit of history, the

:09:39. > :09:44.first time in 22 years that a female racer has taken to the track at a

:09:45. > :09:47.Grand Prix event. She has driven the car in Barcelona, but it is a

:09:48. > :09:52.different story when the crowds are out and it is an official event. She

:09:53. > :09:56.will only do this session, but that is in common with what teams do with

:09:57. > :10:05.their third drivers. Several teams doing that, including Sauber,

:10:06. > :10:09.Caterham and Force India. I came down to the test she did a year

:10:10. > :10:18.ago, she did a really impressive job. She lapped within three tenths

:10:19. > :10:23.of the driver in the Force India. They were very impressed with the

:10:24. > :10:28.job she did, which is why she has gone through the programme, out of

:10:29. > :10:36.the simulator, and is in the car. It is great to see. Let's remind you

:10:37. > :10:39.who she is. She is 31, she comes from Scotland originally, now splits

:10:40. > :10:47.her time between Switzerland and Oxfordshire. She raced in carts as a

:10:48. > :10:51.youngster, she really got the flavour of it. Three times she was

:10:52. > :10:59.the female Carter of the year, the top female in the world in 2000, and

:11:00. > :11:05.raced against Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton spoke about that in the

:11:06. > :11:09.press conference. The event was won by another British driver, Colin

:11:10. > :11:17.Brown. She went into the single-seat cars, and Alan is where she will be

:11:18. > :11:24.coming into the pit. Yes, as you can imagine, there is a heck of a lot of

:11:25. > :11:29.cameras around. That is her first lap on the circuit. She is doing a

:11:30. > :11:33.development programme, so it will be difficult to look at her times and

:11:34. > :11:39.assess in terms of how she has got on. But if she gets within a second

:11:40. > :11:46.or Felipe Massa, she will have done a very good job, numbing a bit of

:11:47. > :11:49.the detail of what she is doing. This is standard, to see the car

:11:50. > :11:54.come straight back in, it is the installation lap. Kevin Magnussen

:11:55. > :11:59.has done his, and he has gone straight back out. McLaren getting

:12:00. > :12:04.on with it. We have seen Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa out as

:12:05. > :12:10.well. There is Lewis Hamilton, going out now. The man who carries the

:12:11. > :12:14.hopes of the nation this weekend. It has been a funny season, the

:12:15. > :12:19.forfeiture is that he had, it looked as though he was going to maintain

:12:20. > :12:26.the momentum, then we got to Monaco, qualifying did not go well, Nico

:12:27. > :12:32.Rosberg went off and then I'd him the chance, and ever since he has

:12:33. > :12:35.not looked as comfortable and imposing as he had been in the early

:12:36. > :12:43.part of the season. It is a close rivalry. People talk about the great

:12:44. > :12:49.rivalries of the past. This one is way closer than that, there are

:12:50. > :12:55.fractions between them. He did have the momentum, but he did not carry

:12:56. > :13:00.it on. He thought he was stitched up in Monaco, and he had another

:13:01. > :13:05.problem in Canada, whereas Nico Rosberg has finished all the races.

:13:06. > :13:12.But in his head, there is not a race where he has not been quicker. It is

:13:13. > :13:16.not a problem now, he does not have to win this race, he got double

:13:17. > :13:22.points in the last race, so within he is -- so as long as he is within

:13:23. > :13:27.14 points by the time we get to Abu Dhabi, he is fine, but questions are

:13:28. > :13:31.building up in his head. It is important for him that he gets a

:13:32. > :13:38.decent result this weekend. He has had one victory here, 2008, one of

:13:39. > :13:43.his best drives. We had wet conditions, and he won by a huge

:13:44. > :13:48.margin. It was fabulous, a fantastic day, we had that and the epic

:13:49. > :14:01.Wimbledon final on the same day. Both events of the same mould,

:14:02. > :14:06.fantastic. B: -- RADIO: Is it left or right hand down? The steering

:14:07. > :14:11.wheel is not quite straight. You can bet the suspension is straight, but

:14:12. > :14:17.the steering is slightly off centre. Lee, what kind of mood did you find

:14:18. > :14:24.when speaking to Lewis Hamilton yesterday? He was in a fantastic

:14:25. > :14:28.mood. You could not tell he was under pressure, it was the best I

:14:29. > :14:33.had seen him for a very long time. Yesterday, he just wanted to chat

:14:34. > :14:38.before and after the interview, he had a bit of hay fever, which

:14:39. > :14:43.affects people here, and there are very few things you are allowed to

:14:44. > :14:49.take, because of drugs testing. But he was not feeling the pressure. The

:14:50. > :14:54.other night, he decided to drive around Stevenage, where he grew up,

:14:55. > :14:58.he drove past houses that he used to go to school with, and he said how

:14:59. > :15:04.important it was to remember where he came from and his roots. That

:15:05. > :15:09.seems to be where he is at, not just about enjoying his life and the pop

:15:10. > :15:14.star girlfriend and the riches of being a Formula One driver, but

:15:15. > :15:19.remembering where he came from. When I asked how he thinks he can handle

:15:20. > :15:25.the pressure, he said, time will tell. That is one thing you can only

:15:26. > :15:29.find out as and when it is happening. At the moment, Nico

:15:30. > :15:38.Rosberg has momentum, Lewis Hamilton agreed, he says, this is the weekend

:15:39. > :15:41.to bring it back. Tom Clarkson also caught up with him briefly after the

:15:42. > :15:45.press conference. And put it to him about how special it is to race here

:15:46. > :15:49.at sill remember stone. -- Silverstone.

:15:50. > :15:54.What would victory this weekend mean to you? That's the question I am

:15:55. > :16:00.asked all the time, so, should have a good answer for you but I don't

:16:01. > :16:03.really. It's going to be, it's always, every year, and when you

:16:04. > :16:06.leave even if you don't - I can't wait until next year for the

:16:07. > :16:11.opportunity again. Last year we had a chance to win it and the tyre

:16:12. > :16:16.issue stopped us from doing that. This is a new year. We have a great

:16:17. > :16:20.car. Coming here with the confidence that we have, I have a chance this

:16:21. > :16:24.weekend, it's unlike any other Grand Prix weekend or any other year I

:16:25. > :16:30.have had since even 2008, I didn't realise I could have won it until

:16:31. > :16:34.the start, you know. This weekend we come into it knowing the opportunity

:16:35. > :16:38.is there, have to work towards it. That was Lewis speaking yesterday.

:16:39. > :16:44.The long interview that Lee carried out with him, you can see that on

:16:45. > :16:52.our qualifying programme. Qualifying starts at 11. 55 on BBC2. A long

:16:53. > :16:58.interview with Lewis Hamilton and if you want to hear the interview with

:16:59. > :17:02.Radio 5 that's on the podcast, talking about coming into this event

:17:03. > :17:05.and that can be downloaded, as well. The track looks spectacular. We are

:17:06. > :17:09.looking from the helicopter shots at the moment over the Silverstone

:17:10. > :17:12.circuit. It's such a popular venue. The drivers love the fast corners,

:17:13. > :17:16.we have been talking about them a little bit. Of course, it's an

:17:17. > :17:21.opportunity for them to really test themselves, if you like, the highest

:17:22. > :17:31.G-forces of the year will be exerted. Absolutely. We had 160mph

:17:32. > :17:34.lap here back in 1985. The point is whatever you get, they do love it as

:17:35. > :17:39.a challenge. They know it's a proper track. You can let the car go. You

:17:40. > :17:42.can get the best out of a Formula One car and that's what they all

:17:43. > :17:46.love. Alan, you have driven all sorts of cars here over the years.

:17:47. > :17:51.Give us some of your thoughts on driving Silverstone. Also driven it

:17:52. > :17:57.in all sorts of configurations. The old circuit when you think back to

:17:58. > :18:02.the Mansell battles was extremely fast. Five corners and you had to

:18:03. > :18:06.really hold on to the car as you were throwing it in and attacking

:18:07. > :18:14.the circuit. That's on a - that sort of general feeling has stayed the

:18:15. > :18:17.same. Still high-speed corners, and names that make you shiver a little

:18:18. > :18:28.bit when you think about it, but the thing about this track is it's one

:18:29. > :18:32.that's got all these little I had I - I think it suits a driver that

:18:33. > :18:35.will attack it. You don't sort of gently build up to this circuit. You

:18:36. > :18:39.have to grab hold of it and take it and then it will give you something

:18:40. > :18:47.back in a fast lap time. We are having a look inside the Mercedes

:18:48. > :18:52.pit. It's lovely to see they have the car that raced here in 1954, if

:18:53. > :18:59.it's the actual car. They didn't win on that occasion, they were beaten

:19:00. > :19:03.by Ferrari. They brought the streamliner car, but found it hard

:19:04. > :19:07.to position it and I think hit one or two bales of straw going around.

:19:08. > :19:16.It used to be different in those days. Just a bit! Lovely to see the

:19:17. > :19:22.car here. Yeah, that was the great thing in 55, did he or did he not

:19:23. > :19:26.win that race? That was Aintree. Mercedes winning a one-two, which is

:19:27. > :19:32.what they're looking at doing that here. They won last year thanks to

:19:33. > :19:36.Nico Rosberg but Hamilton was leading from pole position. He was

:19:37. > :19:39.unlucky. He had that tyre problem last year. Pole position is

:19:40. > :19:43.something he needs. He has messed up the last three qualifying sessions.

:19:44. > :19:47.Going back to talking about the rivalry, it's close enough to put

:19:48. > :19:54.him under pressure, obviously. If you go back... Stop the car, stop

:19:55. > :20:00.the car and switch off. Oh, that's a bit unfortunate. Alan,

:20:01. > :20:05.can you find out what's going on at all for Lotus? Yes, I was just

:20:06. > :20:12.walking down. Lined up at the end of the pit lane. There was McLaren and

:20:13. > :20:24.Williams behind him, they had to abort their practice start because

:20:25. > :20:27.Maldonado had technical problem. It certainly hasn't been a lucky year

:20:28. > :20:30.for that boy. He did choose number 13. It's his permanent race number.

:20:31. > :20:36.A few people have been saying since the beginning of the year, maybe

:20:37. > :20:42.that wasn't such a good idea. Susie has chosen number 41. Haven't the

:20:43. > :20:46.story on that. Wonder what the story is. A lot of drivers have gone for

:20:47. > :20:52.numbers that were successful for them in their carting days. Susie is

:20:53. > :20:56.now back out on track. No lap times have been set by anybody as yet. We

:20:57. > :21:00.are still waiting for anyone to do a flying lap.

:21:01. > :21:05.That's an interesting bit - they have all the names of the team on

:21:06. > :21:09.the side of the Marussia, by the look of it. That's a nice bit of

:21:10. > :21:13.support for the people that put in hard work. And they've been rewarded

:21:14. > :21:18.a bit this year because they've some points on the board. That was great

:21:19. > :21:24.to see in Monaco and so important for teams like that to get points on

:21:25. > :21:29.the board, it makes an opportunity of finishing in the top ten in the

:21:30. > :21:32.constructors' championship, get more money which is their lifeblood.

:21:33. > :21:39.They've a decent chance of holding on to that, it's Caterham and Sauber

:21:40. > :21:43.they're ahead of and you don't see those scoring a point. A few cars at

:21:44. > :21:47.the end of the pit lane. We are seeing practice starts here,

:21:48. > :21:50.presumably? We are, getting into the position to get a first feel of the

:21:51. > :21:53.starts. It's a difficult one here at Silverstone, if you are too far down

:21:54. > :21:57.the pit lane you actually have to then accelerate up through the

:21:58. > :22:09.right-hander and that's a low grip surface and the barriers are close

:22:10. > :22:13.to you. Sauber parked past the line. He has started his practice start

:22:14. > :22:21.after the line. Normally that isn't quite technically allowed.

:22:22. > :22:30.OK. We will watch that. DRS in operation for Susie Wolff. Two

:22:31. > :22:36.around this track. The other one is heading towards stow corner. A

:22:37. > :22:39.couple of opportunities to use that drag reduction system.

:22:40. > :22:44.Still yet to see anybody complete a full flying lap.

:22:45. > :22:59.But quite a few cars on track now. 15 cars on track, just seven

:23:00. > :23:03.still... The technical boss at Toro Rosso was having a conference with

:23:04. > :23:12.journalists yesterday and saying how impressed he is with Daniil Kvyat,

:23:13. > :23:15.he is fast and said he also listens. He has confidence but listens to

:23:16. > :23:20.what the team tell him and puts it into practice. So far, the Russian

:23:21. > :23:27.has driven well, hasn't he, Tony? He has. He has looked as if he was born

:23:28. > :23:31.to it the moment he got in the car. The car is driven with confidence.

:23:32. > :23:35.He looks like he has been doing it ten years. Susie Wolff sets the

:23:36. > :23:41.first time and fasters for the moment. Faster than Button and

:23:42. > :24:10.Ericsson. Top of He has been supportive of her the

:24:11. > :24:14.whole time. That's one for him to take on his phone. A little bit of

:24:15. > :24:20.lock-up. But again she managed to release the

:24:21. > :24:24.brake and keep the wheel turning which is important.

:24:25. > :24:33.Everybody on the hard tyre this morning.

:24:34. > :24:37.McLaren there didn't look particularly good. Looked like it

:24:38. > :24:46.had a lot of understeer there. Beginning to go quicker now, Button

:24:47. > :24:50.and Magnussen. The pink helmet shows up brilliantly well, we won't get it

:24:51. > :24:59.wrong between those two this weekend. Into the last couple of

:25:00. > :25:05.corners. This should be a fast time. Rosberg just seen go fastest.

:25:06. > :25:08.Good to see a dry first practice session. Looking back at the

:25:09. > :25:14.records, the only time that the session was dry for first practice

:25:15. > :25:18.on this revised circuit, which was introduced in 2010, was actually

:25:19. > :25:22.2010. Every year since then, 11, is it and 13, we have had either rain

:25:23. > :25:25.or dampness on circuit and haven't had particularly representative lap

:25:26. > :25:29.times. So great start to the Silverstone weekend. The sun is

:25:30. > :25:35.shining but Susie Wolff has stopped. She's come to a stop. Out on track.

:25:36. > :25:41.Now, it looks like she just pulled over. So, what is going on there I

:25:42. > :25:45.am not sure. Maybe they've had some sort of technical problem. That's

:25:46. > :25:48.des pointing. Let's -- disappointing. Let's hope they can

:25:49. > :25:57.get something reset and send her on the way.

:25:58. > :26:02.Sounded like something happened with oil pressure and everything stopped.

:26:03. > :26:06.It may be the system just shut down. If it was reading zero oil pressure

:26:07. > :26:11.I am sure the system would shut down. That's a very disappointing.

:26:12. > :26:14.Sir Frank Williams watching, everybody wondering what's going on

:26:15. > :26:18.at this stage. If they can't get the car back that will be the end of her

:26:19. > :26:24.session, which would be bitterly disappointing. But she's just got to

:26:25. > :26:28.cope with this and get the car out of the way. Already taken her gloves

:26:29. > :26:32.off, which indicates she's not confident she's going to be getting

:26:33. > :26:37.going once again. Oh, dear, what a disappointing way

:26:38. > :26:40.to perhaps end this session. Williams has been reliable this

:26:41. > :26:56.year. So, what a time for it to go wrong.

:26:57. > :27:03.Yeah, that's a real shame. It does happen with these cars. The last

:27:04. > :27:08.race Vettel, his car shut down. Obviously this is a different

:27:09. > :27:13.engine, but sometimes you make a demand and ask for an engine map and

:27:14. > :27:18.in Vettel's case it wasn't accepted and it shut down. The only way out

:27:19. > :27:22.was like a 60-second reset which is why he didn't go anywhere for a

:27:23. > :27:27.minute. This is on board Rosberg as sues - he ran wide. Wonder what we

:27:28. > :27:31.were looking at there. Made a mistake himself as he came through.

:27:32. > :27:37.But didn't cause him any problems. Just looking at slow-motion action

:27:38. > :27:44.of one or two drivers, getting used to the grip available this weekend.

:27:45. > :27:47.Susie Wolff in trouble. And Maldonado having problems, have you

:27:48. > :27:55.been able to find out more about that Yes, the team are quickly

:27:56. > :28:02.working on the car, it's the motor generator unit. It has failed and

:28:03. > :28:08.effectively that stopped the car. The trick, I think, or the

:28:09. > :28:13.difficulty is they get five of these units for the season and I reckon he

:28:14. > :28:18.must be close, if not at his 5th one for the year, so it's a bitter blow,

:28:19. > :28:21.not necessarily because he is losing this first practice while the team

:28:22. > :28:25.change that, also it might very soon incur a penalty if he goes over the

:28:26. > :28:29.five. I think you are right. We are going to see a few teams getting to

:28:30. > :28:33.the point of having grid penalty it's for using -- pen yaments for

:28:34. > :28:37.using more. -- penalties for using more. Each bit of that engine is

:28:38. > :28:40.allocated, if you have a 5th turbo, for example, that's your limit. One

:28:41. > :28:43.more after that and you are into the penalties for the next race. Next

:28:44. > :28:50.year it's going to be four. That's right. Even more limited. Let's ride

:28:51. > :28:53.with Lewis Hamilton here. A good lap here. Not as quick as Jess son

:28:54. > :29:03.button. -- Jess son button. He is being watched closely by the

:29:04. > :29:07.technical boss at Mercedes. For many of these teams it's not only a home

:29:08. > :29:13.nation race, it's also a race that's down the road. Mercedes, for

:29:14. > :29:17.example, very short trip. Something like eight of the 11 teams based

:29:18. > :29:21.within 125 kilometres of this circuit. So, that tells you how much

:29:22. > :29:26.of a British-based sport Formula One is and the history of the place and

:29:27. > :29:29.why they want to be here and want to see the cars performing and the

:29:30. > :29:35.people from the factory come. It's very much a family thing. They all

:29:36. > :29:44.love being here. On board the Force India. A little bit of a lock-up.

:29:45. > :29:55.Ofs able to bring the car back to the main track. Button is fastest.

:29:56. > :29:59.Susie Wolff's session seems to be over and that's disappointing. All

:30:00. > :30:03.she managed to do was four lapse. One of those was an installation

:30:04. > :30:07.lap. She hadn't really got going at all. Her sector times were beginning

:30:08. > :30:11.to improve but it looks as though it's all over and that's bitterly

:30:12. > :30:15.disappointing. That's the way moat are racing is sometimes. - motor

:30:16. > :30:46.racing is sometimes. You can get in touch with us using the hashtag BBC

:30:47. > :30:49.F1. We are riding with Nico Rosberg. Jenson Button says it seems like

:30:50. > :30:54.they are overheating the front. Really to go further in the year for

:30:55. > :31:01.we can think about whether Nico Rosberg has enough in hand. The

:31:02. > :31:07.margin sounds like a lot, but you get 25 points for a victory. After

:31:08. > :31:16.Canada, somebody asked, can Lewis Hamilton catch up? It was said,

:31:17. > :31:22.there are seeking races left -- there are 13 races left, including

:31:23. > :31:25.the double points in Abu Dhabi. It is controversial, the double

:31:26. > :31:31.points, and it could come down to that. You need to have such a

:31:32. > :31:39.margin, 50 points, more fun, over your team-mate, and that will not be

:31:40. > :31:49.easy. He is pushing the car quite hard now. This lap time is pretty

:31:50. > :31:54.rapid. And a hit for Felipe Massa! He has hit the wall very hard. A

:31:55. > :31:58.terrible start to the day for Williams, one car stopped, one car

:31:59. > :32:05.crashed. The red flag has been brought out. After a brilliant

:32:06. > :32:09.weekend in Austria, Pole position, a third place and a fourth place,

:32:10. > :32:16.their home Grand Prix has started off terribly. Felipe Massa has hit

:32:17. > :32:25.the wall pretty hard. That is the pit lane entry, he has lost it on

:32:26. > :32:31.the exit of the corner. EVERYTHING -- RADIO: Everything OK? He has put

:32:32. > :32:39.a wheel over the curb, by the looks of it. He is going into his 200th

:32:40. > :32:46.Grand Prix. You would not expect somebody of his experience and

:32:47. > :32:54.knowledge, he has never had tremendous results here, but what a

:32:55. > :32:57.way to start for Williams. That is awful, they scored 27 points at the

:32:58. > :33:05.last race, they thought they had moved on. We are expecting him to

:33:06. > :33:11.put a wheel over the edge on the left-hand side. Yes, he gets on the

:33:12. > :33:17.artificial grass and slams into the barrier. Hundreds of thousands of

:33:18. > :33:24.pounds worth of damage in just a moment, a fraction of a second. He

:33:25. > :33:30.hit the back hard. Look at the rear suspension. The gearbox has taken a

:33:31. > :33:40.pounding, the rear wing has been ripped off. Alan, what a terrible

:33:41. > :33:45.start. He was just getting the wheel over there, it is a very fast exit.

:33:46. > :33:52.If you have got any sort of steering angle, the front bites and the rear

:33:53. > :33:57.comes round. We saw it with Fernando Alonso in the damp conditions, going

:33:58. > :34:04.into the wall on the right-hand side. For the team coming off a

:34:05. > :34:08.fantastic result in Austria, they were getting more confident and

:34:09. > :34:14.aggressive, and with both cars being out at the moment, this will knock

:34:15. > :34:19.them back severely. Felipe Massa, after the joy of Austria, trudging

:34:20. > :34:31.back, he knows it was his error. It is difficult to admit to it, but

:34:32. > :34:36.that is all you can do. They might end up with just Valtteri Bottas'

:34:37. > :34:41.data from the next session. It was not likely to be quite as strong a

:34:42. > :34:49.circuit for them as Austria, but they were good in Spain, they would

:34:50. > :34:53.have been in the battle. We are expecting Red Bull to be stronger

:34:54. > :34:58.this weekend, it is difficult to say about the others. Ferrari might be

:34:59. > :35:03.there. But this will hurt Williams considerably. A very difficult

:35:04. > :35:09.start. Such a shame for Felipe Massa. At the last race, Rob Smedley

:35:10. > :35:17.said he seems to be in a better place, he feels comfortable, and he

:35:18. > :35:22.has come off the back of having to take on Fernando Alonso at Ferrari.

:35:23. > :35:31.Rob said, Fernando Alonso is a fantastic capacitor, it is every

:35:32. > :35:36.session. He has come away from that, he felt great at Williams, and he

:35:37. > :35:42.has had for non-finishes in the first eight races, sometimes not

:35:43. > :35:49.through his own fault. He looked to be getting there, and then we see

:35:50. > :35:56.this. You have got the grams meter, it will be interesting to see that.

:35:57. > :36:11.He just runs too wide. Off he goes. There is a sensor in the car, and if

:36:12. > :36:16.the reading is beyond a certain level, it lights the medical light

:36:17. > :36:20.in the car and back in race control, so it tells the medics he has had an

:36:21. > :36:27.impact beyond a certain level. I imagine that would have triggered

:36:28. > :36:33.it. They are discussing what has been a difficult start to the day.

:36:34. > :36:38.The only slight silver lining, we saw the recovery truck going to

:36:39. > :36:43.Susie Wolff's car, and I wonder if they can get that car back, and she

:36:44. > :36:49.might get some laps in. Somewhat ironic, her team-mate crashing out

:36:50. > :36:55.and causing this red flag, but let's hope they might be able to get the

:36:56. > :37:00.other car returned. That car will hopefully be lifted out of the way.

:37:01. > :37:05.We were talking about Williams' chances, what about Red Bull? They

:37:06. > :37:10.had a difficult time in Austria, with the retirement of Sebastian

:37:11. > :37:15.Vettel, and Daniel Ricciardo was disappointed with himself, but there

:37:16. > :37:17.is more optimism, as we found when we spoke to Daniel Ricciardo

:37:18. > :37:23.yesterday. We can be more optimistic. Whether

:37:24. > :37:27.we can be crazily optimistic and expect to be up there with

:37:28. > :37:34.Mercedes, probably not, we will take baby steps for now. But on paper, it

:37:35. > :37:39.should suit us more. If we can get the car working with high-speed

:37:40. > :37:45.stuff, which it normally does, we should be more competitive, just

:37:46. > :37:51.behind Mercedes. But let's see how we go on Friday. It is a track I

:37:52. > :37:56.enjoyed a lot, whether that council anything, we will see.

:37:57. > :38:05.Felipe Massa, you have got to feel for him. He does not want to get

:38:06. > :38:09.back! You are on full view. He is getting a lovely reception, but it

:38:10. > :38:17.is not the way you want to be presenting yourself. It will not be

:38:18. > :38:21.so warm when he gets back! All of the big brass from Williams are here

:38:22. > :38:24.this weekend. Their new motorhome made its debut this weekend, they

:38:25. > :38:32.were kind enough to invite us in this morning. Claire was hanging

:38:33. > :38:42.pictures yesterday. Lee McKenzie is with Felipe Massa.

:38:43. > :38:48.Are you OK? Yes, I am fine. Are you OK? No issues whatsoever? Are you

:38:49. > :38:59.sure? 100%. Tell us about the accident. I went on the outside of

:39:00. > :39:02.the curb, it pushed the inside. It is a shame to start the day like

:39:03. > :39:08.this. How much damage was done? A lot.

:39:09. > :39:17.Well done for diving in and getting anything out of him. He has been in

:39:18. > :39:22.similar situations before, we have got a red flag, the session has been

:39:23. > :39:27.paused. Jenson Button waiting to come back out. His time of the

:39:28. > :39:32.fastest for a while, but he has been pushed down to eighth place. There

:39:33. > :39:37.is not a huge amount of optimism from McLaren. One person asks what

:39:38. > :39:44.upgrades McLaren have brought for this special weekend. It is a home

:39:45. > :39:48.race for them. I do not get the vibe is that they are expecting anything

:39:49. > :39:53.great. I do not think there is anything sensational. They are

:39:54. > :40:02.looking at a strategic introduction of updates of the season goes on.

:40:03. > :40:09.Alan, what have you got? On the back of McLaren, with the hard and medium

:40:10. > :40:13.tyres, generating temperature is important, and that is what they

:40:14. > :40:18.have struggled with on the front tyres, especially Jenson Button. A

:40:19. > :40:23.couple of years ago, they were very fast when it was hot, and they

:40:24. > :40:28.struggled when it got colder. If it is a hot weekend, they have got half

:40:29. > :40:35.a chance, but if not, it will be a tough weekend. This circuit is

:40:36. > :40:43.dependent on a red and, which is a point of weakness with McLaren. The

:40:44. > :40:45.last Grand Prix, in Austria, big, long straights and traction, but

:40:46. > :40:52.this is about a wry dynamic downforce. McLaren not expecting

:40:53. > :40:57.great things. Fernando Alonso having a tough year again. The car not

:40:58. > :41:03.proving to be as competitive as Ferrari would hope. Slightly more

:41:04. > :41:06.worrying for Italian fans generally, one of the bits of news was that

:41:07. > :41:18.Bernie Ecclestone was talking about there being no monster in the

:41:19. > :41:26.future. -- Monza I do not take it too seriously. We have seen him

:41:27. > :41:31.employ these tactics before. He has spoken about the commercial

:41:32. > :41:41.agreement being a disaster, it is just trying to get them to make a

:41:42. > :41:42.commitment to improving the track. Let's hear what Fernando Alonso

:41:43. > :41:57.said. We do not have a big part in these

:41:58. > :42:05.decisions, we just drive. We would prefer to drive with the spectators

:42:06. > :42:12.around, so I think Monza has been quite good for a lot of us. If you

:42:13. > :42:17.race for Ferrari or another team, it is a great atmosphere. It was the

:42:18. > :42:21.same in Austria, if you drive for Red Bull or another team, you feel

:42:22. > :42:30.the warm atmosphere and the passion for motor racing. Some circuits are

:42:31. > :42:35.nicer to race than others, where we race alone, with empty grandstands,

:42:36. > :42:41.but we do not have a big part in these decisions. We will try to put

:42:42. > :42:47.on a good show for whatever clap we have.

:42:48. > :42:55.There is Susie Wolff's car. The problems for her team-mate's car...

:42:56. > :43:04.Both of the cars are in the pit lane. One is complete, Susie

:43:05. > :43:06.Wolff's, it was an engine problem, so whether they can reset something

:43:07. > :43:13.or whether it is seriously mechanical, the team will be itching

:43:14. > :43:19.to get to grips with it. But Felipe Massa's car will take a bit longer.

:43:20. > :43:24.It is a shame for Susie Wolff, people underestimate the amount of

:43:25. > :43:35.effort she has put into it. You read stuff and they talk about it being a

:43:36. > :43:41.publicity stunt. She had a neck issue last year, she has taken it

:43:42. > :43:49.very seriously. She did 86 laps here last year, she was bruised and

:43:50. > :43:53.battered, a huge out of effort. Her husband said, what have you done to

:43:54. > :44:05.my wife, she has a neck like Mike Tyson? Ten years ago, she finished

:44:06. > :44:12.fifth in a championship in which the top three included Paul di Resta.

:44:13. > :44:17.She massacred one driver in that championship, and he drove for

:44:18. > :44:22.Marussia twice last year. She is no mean performer. She is used to

:44:23. > :44:30.driving in front of huge crowds, she is making her way back into the

:44:31. > :44:38.garage. She raced seven years for Mercedes in DTM, massive crowds.

:44:39. > :44:47.The engine has gone, terminal. The inside has gone. Unfortunately.

:44:48. > :44:54.Gutted. We just heard it is terminal, the

:44:55. > :45:06.engine has gone, and internal problem. It is all over, but she

:45:07. > :45:13.does have Germany lined up, she is due to drive the car again in this

:45:14. > :45:17.session in Germany. It's such a shame. A circuit she

:45:18. > :45:21.knew and prepared for. It's crushing really. So disappointing. She hasn't

:45:22. > :45:25.had a decent chance to get some lapse in. She did four lapse in

:45:26. > :45:28.total. One of those was an installation lap. She hadn't really

:45:29. > :45:38.started to put a lap together at that point. Her session is over. So,

:45:39. > :45:55.very, very sad. I was there the last time in 92, and she tried in Brazil

:45:56. > :46:04.in Mexico and South Africa. We are going for a package that gives us

:46:05. > :46:11.more to get the high speed. They have to do a front ride. We are

:46:12. > :46:15.happy to make the trade-off and go from there. We are still OK on plan.

:46:16. > :46:19.We are not meant to go out for another seven minutes. So got plenty

:46:20. > :46:25.of time. That message was delayed slightly, of course, the session

:46:26. > :46:28.will restart at 10. 43am. Thank you for your comments. Great to have

:46:29. > :46:34.those. Some of them referring to what we have seen. Simon saying,

:46:35. > :46:43.gutted for Susie Wolff. Still very inspiring. Nice of you guys to still

:46:44. > :46:47.be inspired by what she's done. The sheer amount of work she's done to

:46:48. > :46:52.get into position and the opportunities are infrequent. The

:46:53. > :47:02.opportunities, not just for Susie, but the likes for Danill. There's

:47:03. > :47:07.little opportunity to show what they can do. In Susie's case it was 22

:47:08. > :47:10.years since it last happened. She knows she's not going to win the

:47:11. > :47:14.World Championship, she was hoping to at least be an inspiration for

:47:15. > :47:20.women in motor sport and prove that they can do it. You can reach the

:47:21. > :47:25.top. It's just very sad. Well, Williams having a very poor start to

:47:26. > :47:31.their Silverstone weekend. Their home Grand Prix has not beone well.

:47:32. > :47:34.One car into the barrier and another broken down with engine failure. We

:47:35. > :47:38.will be seeing cars back on track in a moment. Some more of your

:47:39. > :47:40.comments. Dean saying, if Mercedes stopped being dominant which team

:47:41. > :47:45.would be most likely to take advantage? That's a good question,

:47:46. > :47:48.Dean. I think you have to say that Williams and Red Bull have been the

:47:49. > :47:57.nearest challengers to Mercedes and it does depend on the circuits. Red

:47:58. > :48:04.Bull like the faster circuits. We are expecting, as Ricardo was saying

:48:05. > :48:07.earlier. Can't discount Ferrari, they show flashes of pace, it

:48:08. > :48:11.doesn't seem to be all the time. It tends to be Friday pace. Although

:48:12. > :48:15.having said that, Fernando worked wonders to get to the finish

:48:16. > :48:21.somewhere near a Williams in Austria, that was a fabulous drive.

:48:22. > :48:27.You are right, Red Bull, you wonder how quick that Red Bull will go with

:48:28. > :48:30.a Mercedes engine. There is talk about engine changes. There is

:48:31. > :48:33.rumours that Lotus might have a Mercedes engine next year. These

:48:34. > :48:37.things will change. I am sure that Red Bull also are putting a huge

:48:38. > :48:42.amount of effort in to get Renault to up their game. There's been

:48:43. > :48:46.changes there. Caterham, a change of ownership has led to the man who was

:48:47. > :48:51.effectively managing the Caterham team, gone back to Renault now. He

:48:52. > :48:55.is an impressive man. Not sure there was a lot he could do at Caterham to

:48:56. > :48:59.make that team make progress. He is back in the Renault fold. You have

:49:00. > :49:02.to think that Renault are taking this challenge very seriously. They

:49:03. > :49:08.need to make some progress with that. In fairness to them, speaking

:49:09. > :49:13.to both Vettel yesterday and Ricardo, they say the drivability

:49:14. > :49:23.has improved significantly. It seems that the issue is not enough power

:49:24. > :49:28.from the internal combustion engine. They've been impressed by the

:49:29. > :49:32.drivability. That's what has allowed them to get amongst it at some

:49:33. > :49:35.circuits. We are going to have a long interview with Sebastian Vettel

:49:36. > :49:41.this weekend in our BBC coverage, that's something else to watch out

:49:42. > :49:45.for. We saw Max Chiltern a moment ago. He is the third British driver

:49:46. > :49:50.here this weekend. Whilst he might not be up there for a podium finish,

:49:51. > :49:55.he is still excited to be racing at his home Grand Prix. Not

:49:56. > :49:58.particularly, it's not a hard thing, obviously there is a lot of press

:49:59. > :50:02.and stuff to do on the week before. I have been absolutely manic this

:50:03. > :50:07.week. I wouldn't change it for the world. Racing on your home soil in a

:50:08. > :50:10.Formula One race is something which you never forget. I remember last

:50:11. > :50:14.year it was a race I will never forget. It wasn't a perfect race but

:50:15. > :50:18.we had a good battle and I came out on top fighting, you know, I want to

:50:19. > :50:23.have a good race again this year. And put on a good show for the fans.

:50:24. > :50:26.I am probably a bit biased, I would like to think it's one of the

:50:27. > :50:31.biggest races of the year on the calendar, if not the biggest.

:50:32. > :50:35.Testify tens of thousandsen -- we have tens of thousands of people

:50:36. > :50:38.camping, whatever the weather, hopefully we will have a good

:50:39. > :50:56.weekend. We ride on board with Daniil Kvyat.

:50:57. > :51:01.A big grandstand coming up on the exit.

:51:02. > :51:06.The old pits are on the right side, still used for many of the support

:51:07. > :51:13.races here at Silverstone. Flashes down towards the corner.

:51:14. > :51:29.Still a very quick corner. It's down a couple of gears now.

:51:30. > :51:35.The car is hitting the ground a little bit. It really looks pretty

:51:36. > :51:39.stiffly set up for these high-speed corners. There is going to be a

:51:40. > :51:45.change next year. We saw the experiment in Austria of using

:51:46. > :51:52.titanium as the plates as opposed to heavy metal. It doesn't spark in the

:51:53. > :52:01.same way. For next year it was confirmed yesterday that they will

:52:02. > :52:06.be using the titanium. He was saying it wasn't just a gimmick. There is

:52:07. > :52:15.two valid reasons. First of all, the metal being used at the moment it

:52:16. > :52:23.caused a couple of punctures. Also, the material they use at the moment

:52:24. > :52:28.wears - titanium will wear as quickly. They can't run the car and

:52:29. > :52:34.will have to think about that a bit more. Two realistic reasons apart

:52:35. > :52:38.from throughing up a few spectacular sparks for the fans. We will look

:52:39. > :52:42.forward to see how that is. Alan, you have a view of the cars on

:52:43. > :52:49.track. Tell us where you are. A stunning view. I am standing right

:52:50. > :52:59.at the apex of turn one. They fly through the right-hander, the wind

:53:00. > :53:03.is picking up a lot. A Ferrari comes through of Raikkonen. Force India,

:53:04. > :53:06.they'll be good around here because they always have been. There was a

:53:07. > :53:18.much neater line there from the Force India as it comes through. We

:53:19. > :53:22.are with Sebastian Vettel at the moment.

:53:23. > :53:25.I wonder if the four-time world champion is going to get his - pick

:53:26. > :53:30.up his season a little bit this weekend. He has been unlucky. A

:53:31. > :53:34.retirement last time out in Austria. They had that technical glitch.

:53:35. > :53:37.Managed to reset it but they decided to withdraw from the race. He was

:53:38. > :53:48.running right down at the back of the field. Watching him come down

:53:49. > :53:52.now, towards the corner. Where Massa had his accident earlier. Corners

:53:53. > :53:56.Red Bull is normally good on. Vettel has a good record here. Pole

:53:57. > :54:02.position in 2009 and 2010. Always had a race on his hands with his

:54:03. > :54:12.team-mate, though, Mark Webber who was always fast at Silverstone. He

:54:13. > :54:20.was great in the quick corners. Vettel admitted, he said, he is

:54:21. > :54:24.better than me in the quick. Yeah, now he has a fight on his hands with

:54:25. > :54:30.another Australian. That's right, yes not bad for a number two driver

:54:31. > :54:34.said Mark Webber. Mark is joining us on our coverage this weekend and

:54:35. > :54:39.will be giving us tips as to how he was fast here on Silverstone. That's

:54:40. > :54:46.a fun feature to watch out for, perhaps giving away some secrets.

:54:47. > :54:48.The programme starting 11. 55 on Saturday. We will learn his tricks

:54:49. > :54:58.before the qualifying session itself. Maldonado's car still being

:54:59. > :55:08.worked on. This track should suit Lotus better than Austria. They've

:55:09. > :55:13.had a poor run of tracks since - had a lot of problems, hopefully will go

:55:14. > :55:19.better. Lee has managed to catch up with Susie. Let's go to the pits.

:55:20. > :55:23.Thank you, Susie, such a disappointing end after the work you

:55:24. > :55:26.put in. What was the problem? Really tough day but that's Formula One

:55:27. > :55:32.sometimes. We had an oil pressure problem which cut the engine off.

:55:33. > :55:35.Car is back already and the guys are looking at it, hopefully they can

:55:36. > :55:40.find the problem and get it fixed. Describe the emotions of when you

:55:41. > :55:44.headed out of the garage and went out in front of the fans, we saw

:55:45. > :55:47.your names on banners, as well. First of all, a huge thank you for

:55:48. > :55:52.the support I have had. It really means a lot. It helped a lot. It was

:55:53. > :55:55.wonderful. Going out on to the track was the best feeling because

:55:56. > :55:59.although there's been a lot of media around my run actually when you put

:56:00. > :56:02.the helmet on and you are in the car that's when it's the best, just you

:56:03. > :56:06.in the car. As soon as I left the pit lane everything felt good. I

:56:07. > :56:09.knew what I had to to and had a good feeling in the car. I was looking

:56:10. > :56:13.forward to it. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a short run. But

:56:14. > :56:20.that's life sometimes. Now I have to keep my head up and look forward to

:56:21. > :56:24.Hockenheim. This is the first of several days you are doing, as well.

:56:25. > :56:27.How much do you think you were able to put the nerves behind you and get

:56:28. > :56:29.out there, that you can take forward and go to Hockenheim and feel that

:56:30. > :56:35.it might only have been four lapse but it's four lapse more than before

:56:36. > :56:38.today -- laps? I felt ready for the day. The team had done a fantastic

:56:39. > :56:45.job of preparing me. I knew exactly what I had to do. For me it was good

:56:46. > :56:51.to get that first run on an actual race weekend in the bag. Now I can

:56:52. > :56:54.keep working towards Hockenheim with knowing what exactly what I have to

:56:55. > :57:01.do there and exactly thousand will feel. You were in the car -- exactly

:57:02. > :57:05.how it will feel. What does it mean for Marcus, the guys will be working

:57:06. > :57:09.hard on Philip's car, as well. Of course it's tough. It's not the

:57:10. > :57:16.great start to the weekend we hoped for. We will move on and pick

:57:17. > :57:20.ourselves up. My car came back quite quickly, they'll be able to get it

:57:21. > :57:23.ready in time and that's important he gets running today. Bad luck,

:57:24. > :57:26.thank you for talking to us. Thank you.

:57:27. > :57:32.Well, she's dealing with the PR side of it well. Some of your comments

:57:33. > :57:36.coming in, thank you for those. One saying, unlucky for Susie, she's

:57:37. > :57:41.done so much in the motor sport world. It's a shame to see her

:57:42. > :57:45.career start like this. Another saying I feel for Susie, when you

:57:46. > :57:50.get a chance you need to show what you can do quickly. She didn't get

:57:51. > :57:54.that chance at all. So, denied the opportunity. But motor racing, as we

:57:55. > :57:58.know, Tony, can be awfully cruel, sometimes. It's a cruel, cruel

:57:59. > :58:02.sport. Not all the time, but it can be. It can indeed. Sebastian Vettel

:58:03. > :58:07.is finding that out this year a little bit, as well, after having so

:58:08. > :58:12.much success the last four years. One asking do we think Red Bull

:58:13. > :58:15.could beat Mercedes this weekend? I think it's unlikely unless Mercedes

:58:16. > :58:21.really shoot themselves in the foot. Who knows, they've had mistakes,

:58:22. > :58:29.errors, things didn't go well in Canada. Now this isn't a heavy

:58:30. > :58:34.circuit on brakes. It's something like 8% of the lapse on brakes, one

:58:35. > :58:37.of the lower percentages. A bigger problem is getting enough energy

:58:38. > :58:44.recovery from that inspect of braking. I did speak quickly to

:58:45. > :58:46.Renault, I felt the same as you it might be difficult, they said

:58:47. > :58:51.although the amount of braking and level of brake something not as high

:58:52. > :58:55.you still have a lot of corners. Periods slowing down and that's all

:58:56. > :59:04.regeneration time. In fact, he said, the recoverable energy is not a big

:59:05. > :59:10.deal. He also said... A problem at the moment, will advise. He also

:59:11. > :59:13.said that fuel is not a major factor, in other words, this isn't

:59:14. > :59:17.one of the highest fuel consumption tracks. You are maintaining a

:59:18. > :59:21.minimum speed. Alan, I guess that makes sense in terms of this being a

:59:22. > :59:26.more fast and flowing track. Yes, it is. It's a much longer circuit than

:59:27. > :59:30.Austria. Therefore, they use double the fuel anyway. However, it is a

:59:31. > :59:36.fast and flowing circuit. With that you can recover quite a lot of fuel

:59:37. > :59:39.consumption just by doing lift-off. Here at turn one there is a few cars

:59:40. > :59:42.going through flat but that's mainly the Red Bull. Everybody else is

:59:43. > :59:50.having to lift off. That's not due to fuel, that's purely due to the

:59:51. > :00:02.wind blowing the cars around and rear instability. Did you happen to

:00:03. > :00:12.see Sauber? Yes, we both sort of took a sharp intake of breath. The

:00:13. > :00:16.rear was dancing around behind as he went through. That seems to be where

:00:17. > :00:19.the problem lies for most of the cars. The Red Bull just flashed

:00:20. > :00:27.through in front of me. I don't think there was a slightest hint of

:00:28. > :00:34.a lift there between the Red Bull. Nico Rosberg is currently the

:00:35. > :00:40.fastest, ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, who is faster than Fernando Alonso

:00:41. > :00:44.at the moment. RADIO: You can continue the run for the moment.

:00:45. > :00:53.They have recovered that problem for Nico Rosberg. The Toro Rosso cars

:00:54. > :01:00.showing a good turn of pace again, but they are desperate for

:01:01. > :01:08.reliability. Daniel Ricciardo has been pushed down by Kevin Magnussen.

:01:09. > :01:09.Lewis Hamilton down in 11th place, but he has just gone fastest in the

:01:10. > :01:34.first sector. Maldonado. The car is in trouble.

:01:35. > :01:36.The other Caterham has not set a time,

:01:37. > :01:39.Maldonado. The car is in trouble. The other Caterham has not set a but

:01:40. > :01:47.hopefully we will see him. Fernando Alonso improving a little bit. The

:01:48. > :01:57.fastest middle sector for Fernando Alonso.

:01:58. > :02:07.Daniel Ricciardo has moved up to second, and now Fernando Alonso

:02:08. > :02:16.moves to second. And now Lewis Hamilton go second. That is the

:02:17. > :02:23.point, it is the closeness, as we said earlier. The other rivalries,

:02:24. > :02:29.you knew that Ayrton Senna was quicker than Alain Prost, but it is

:02:30. > :02:36.not letting Lewis Hamilton relax. If you go back to Monaco, there might

:02:37. > :02:42.have been something iffy, but he did not get his first run, so that let

:02:43. > :02:47.Nico Rosberg get into that position. He is obviously under pressure. Nico

:02:48. > :02:52.Rosberg has gone even quicker. I wonder if Lewis Hamilton will do the

:02:53. > :02:58.same. Quite similar plans at the moment. This was a moment ago for

:02:59. > :03:04.Fernando Alonso. A bit of under steer. He just got it back. The

:03:05. > :03:09.front tyres scrubbing across the surface of the track. The car not

:03:10. > :03:15.responding quite as well as he would have liked. But he held it together,

:03:16. > :03:22.and he is third fastest, behind Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Just

:03:23. > :03:32.over half an hour to go. There is the boss of Mercedes and the triple

:03:33. > :03:39.world champion Nicky louder. He may be a bit more relaxed now that his

:03:40. > :03:53.wife is no longer on the track, but he will be disappointed for her.

:03:54. > :03:58.RADIO: 0.2 on the first sector, zero on the middle sector, and we need to

:03:59. > :04:04.find 0.3 on the final sector. A bit of work to be done. He backed off,

:04:05. > :04:11.so he has not gone for another really quick lap. I wonder if he

:04:12. > :04:17.will keep it quiet until we get into the main part of qualifying. Last

:04:18. > :04:26.year, he was on pole by over 0.4 seconds. Virtually 0.5 seconds.

:04:27. > :04:32.Joining us is Christian Horner. Good to have you with us, tell us how the

:04:33. > :04:37.plan is going at this stage, you are currently in fourth place and sixth

:04:38. > :04:42.place. We are working through a programme, settling in to the

:04:43. > :04:51.circuit, working on the setup, both guys are dialling themselves in.

:04:52. > :04:55.Both getting used to the conditions. It is Marcus Ericsson who spun,

:04:56. > :05:00.hopefully that will not cause any delays in the programme. This is

:05:01. > :05:06.more of a Red Bull circuit, Austria was not especially suited to the

:05:07. > :05:11.strengths and weaknesses, but this track is where downforce is king, so

:05:12. > :05:16.can you challenge Mercedes? I am not sure anybody can at the moment, they

:05:17. > :05:22.are looking pretty racy. But we should be better suited than we were

:05:23. > :05:31.in Austria. We are closer to the pace. But it is quite a gap to Nico

:05:32. > :05:35.Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. A bit of weather tomorrow, so we will see.

:05:36. > :05:41.What is the story in getting more horsepower or energy out of

:05:42. > :05:47.Renault? How hard you pushing? What are the plans? They have had a

:05:48. > :05:52.management shuffle, which is a positive sign. He is a good guy,

:05:53. > :05:57.somebody who have worked with before, and he will make the right

:05:58. > :06:03.changes and push in the right direction. But there is plenty of

:06:04. > :06:10.work to do. We have got to try to close the gap. We can see why Marcus

:06:11. > :06:16.Ericsson is on the inside of Becketts, but he did not let -- hit

:06:17. > :06:22.anything. Coming back to the weather forecast, you mean we are looking at

:06:23. > :06:28.rain over the weekend? When will we get it? Originally, they said it

:06:29. > :06:33.would be horrible on Sunday, but it has been brought forward to

:06:34. > :06:38.tomorrow. And again to Overton night, into tomorrow morning, and it

:06:39. > :06:43.should be better tomorrow afternoon. It seems to be changing all the

:06:44. > :06:48.time. We are in the British summer, of course! Thank you for joining us,

:06:49. > :06:54.Christian, it will be great to hear from you later over the weekend.

:06:55. > :06:58.Marcus Ericsson, that is a shame, it looked like the car was running, but

:06:59. > :07:02.he has been caught out by the two rain as he tried to get it back onto

:07:03. > :07:11.the track. He has had a tough baptism. He has joined the team, it

:07:12. > :07:16.is not a great car. Early on in the season, he had his first wet weather

:07:17. > :07:22.session and he went off. It has been such a tough learning process. They

:07:23. > :07:27.have gone through a change of ownership since we last saw them,

:07:28. > :07:36.Tony Fernandez no longer owns the team. He always threatened that he

:07:37. > :07:42.was losing interest, he wanted to see a more competitive performance,

:07:43. > :07:50.and now we have a new consortium of people involved. A couple of names

:07:51. > :07:55.involved, the adviser has been involved many times in the past.

:07:56. > :08:03.Yes, we will see how that goes. A former driver as well. You do not

:08:04. > :08:10.often see drivers coming back in a management role. We saw it with HRT

:08:11. > :08:18.a couple of years ago, but are you surprised? Yes. A consortium of

:08:19. > :08:27.investors investing in Caterham, we will see how that goes! You can only

:08:28. > :08:32.make a small fortune out of motor racing if you start with a big one.

:08:33. > :08:36.Bernie Ecclestone has done well for a lot of people, but that team does

:08:37. > :08:42.not look like it will finish in the top ten. It is interesting that

:08:43. > :08:53.somebody has chosen to buy them! We will see what happens. Another team

:08:54. > :09:01.based not too far away. They moved from Norfolk to oxygen a little

:09:02. > :09:04.while ago. -- to Oxfordshire. This session was interrupted by the

:09:05. > :09:09.accident for Felipe Massa earlier, he crashed on the exit to a corner,

:09:10. > :09:14.and we have also seen problems with the other Williams car, Susie Wolff,

:09:15. > :09:21.a major internal problem with her engine. But Mercedes are on top, no

:09:22. > :09:26.great surprise. Nico Rosberg first, Lewis Hamilton second, then Fernando

:09:27. > :09:44.Alonso and Daniel Ricciardo. They will get free medical care at

:09:45. > :09:50.Caterham now that Colin is back, he is a fully qualified dentist! That

:09:51. > :09:56.is a bonus! He has treated drivers in the paddock before! Felipe Massa

:09:57. > :10:01.might need him this morning! It is always good to have a sideline!

:10:02. > :10:06.Lewis Hamilton back on track again, such a crucial weekend for him,

:10:07. > :10:13.looking to win his home Grand Prix, for only the second time. I bet in

:10:14. > :10:16.2008, his second year in Formula One, he thought there would be

:10:17. > :10:25.plenty more, but we have not seen the kind of dominance we saw from

:10:26. > :10:36.Jim Clark in the 60s, across the three different tracks. Brands

:10:37. > :10:46.Hatch, entry and Silverstone. Nigel Mansell, of course. RADIO: The track

:10:47. > :10:51.is now clear. Yes, Nigel Mansell, one of the great heroes of British

:10:52. > :10:56.Formula One, he won five times on home soil, including the European

:10:57. > :11:01.Grand Prix, and he is the steward this weekend. He loves being here.

:11:02. > :11:10.There was something special about his victories here. He knew how to

:11:11. > :11:16.put on a show. I remember the race in 1987, that will never be

:11:17. > :11:22.bettered. Spellbinding stuff. He always had a massive amount of

:11:23. > :11:26.support. If Lewis Hamilton put that car on pole position, that will

:11:27. > :11:31.provide tremendous entertainment. Talking of British drivers, one who

:11:32. > :11:36.was on the grid last year but is not this year, Paul di Resta.

:11:37. > :11:43.Lovely to see you, different from last year, though. Is it tough,

:11:44. > :11:49.being a spectator? Yes. It is great to be here, it is special, but I am

:11:50. > :11:52.missing being involved. But being back in the paddock, seeing what

:11:53. > :11:57.opportunities are about, because once you have the taste, you never

:11:58. > :12:03.lose it, and I am even more dedicated to get back in. It is a

:12:04. > :12:09.challenge, but I will enjoy it and do my utmost. This is business as

:12:10. > :12:16.opposed to pleasure? Yes, you can enjoy what the Grand Prix is, but it

:12:17. > :12:21.is about seeing what opportunities are about, because you need to be in

:12:22. > :12:24.that position to jump in, should anything come up, and keeping your

:12:25. > :12:31.face in front of people who matter. Are there opportunities? It is hard

:12:32. > :12:36.to read. It is still quite early. From this race on to Monza is the

:12:37. > :12:42.key point in the year, it is the silly season. It is when speculation

:12:43. > :12:46.comes, but when you are determined to do something, you need to get

:12:47. > :12:51.yourself there. I can be quite relaxed, I am enjoying DTM, that is

:12:52. > :12:58.my number one think this year, because my services are there, but I

:12:59. > :13:06.am exploring opportunities in Formula One, and that is where your

:13:07. > :13:09.heart lies. But racing DTM is great, being involved with

:13:10. > :13:15.Mercedes-Benz, it is nice to be back in that family, and I will keep

:13:16. > :13:18.working. Dario, we have not seen you very often here, because you have

:13:19. > :13:24.been racing in America, are you enjoying it? Yes, I have never seen

:13:25. > :13:30.this before. I got lost this morning! It is fun to be here, it is

:13:31. > :13:38.good to catch up with Paul, I have not seen him for a couple of months.

:13:39. > :13:44.I would drive the Lotus everyday, so I am looking forward to that. I am

:13:45. > :13:49.here is a global ambassador, it is nice to give something back, it is

:13:50. > :13:54.an online resource for young drivers. I had Jackie Stewart

:13:55. > :13:58.helping me out, and putting people around me who could teach me stuff,

:13:59. > :14:06.but most people do not have those advantages. That is what that does.

:14:07. > :14:09.And having a good time. You are a huge historian when it comes to

:14:10. > :14:14.motorsport, what does it mean for you to be in Jimmy's car this

:14:15. > :14:22.weekend? The 50th anniversary of races here, to drive the Lotus 25 is

:14:23. > :14:29.incredibly special. I will have my replica Jim Clark helmet and a suit

:14:30. > :14:34.on and some bits of memorabilia. He fascinates me, he is my absolute

:14:35. > :14:38.hero. It is an absolute privilege to do that and to see some of the other

:14:39. > :14:44.guys driving these cars. It will be a nice, slow parade. It will have to

:14:45. > :14:49.be slow, because I do not know where this new track goes! If there is a

:14:50. > :14:55.good thing about retirement, it has allowed me to live in the UK again,

:14:56. > :15:11.and to spend time at events like this and catch up with old friends.

:15:12. > :15:26.Tremendous hero of many drivers. And a hero, no doubt, of our own Alan.

:15:27. > :15:29.Alan, you have moved around, a different corner you are watching.

:15:30. > :15:31.Yes. You see the wind has picked up a little bit. The flags are blowing

:15:32. > :15:35.and the cars are getting blown around a lot. The McLaren comes

:15:36. > :15:45.through now. Jenson Button accelerates.

:15:46. > :15:50.It intrigues me, in lighter lower category cars, you can understand

:15:51. > :15:54.them blown around, at this level with this horsepower, you are still

:15:55. > :16:00.obviously aware of that breeze picking up. The limits of physics

:16:01. > :16:06.are the limits of physics and on the edge of the grip level everything

:16:07. > :16:10.that upsets it, and it's gusty now, there is a big gust coming through.

:16:11. > :16:14.If that catches you, and this is an open air field, therefore, where the

:16:15. > :16:18.grandstand ends you get this funnel of air coming through, if it pushes

:16:19. > :16:23.the front of the car a little more, that might have been part of the

:16:24. > :16:28.reason that Massa ran wide because it's exposed out there at that

:16:29. > :16:36.corner. Now one of the Force India is coming through gentle in his

:16:37. > :16:41.approach but then behind him the Force India. Toro Rosso is

:16:42. > :16:45.struggling more with that wind effect. Alan, you are busy watching

:16:46. > :16:48.cars coming through. It's quiet on circuit at the moment. Four cars on

:16:49. > :16:52.track, I think. A couple of things that have come up this week, we are

:16:53. > :16:57.being asked by a few people getting in touch is what are our thoughts on

:16:58. > :17:02.the new idea of having standing restarts for next season, just

:17:03. > :17:06.explain this is the idea when we have a safety car period during the

:17:07. > :17:10.race, instead of the safety car peeling in and then there is a

:17:11. > :17:14.rolling restart in the order, single file, then the safety car will peel

:17:15. > :17:20.in but the cars will come around that last corner, stop on the grid,

:17:21. > :17:26.no mechanics will come out, like it's a formation lap, the lights

:17:27. > :17:30.will come on and off they go. What's your thinking, Alan? We were both in

:17:31. > :17:33.the press conference yesterday when the race director explained the

:17:34. > :17:36.reasons behind that and some of the other changes that were being

:17:37. > :17:41.proposed. Personally, I think if you are leading the race you have done

:17:42. > :17:44.the job to be leading the race and there is an incident outside of your

:17:45. > :17:48.control and it takes your advantage away, you still should have some

:17:49. > :17:53.advantage on the restart. I think that a rolling start is the better

:17:54. > :17:57.way to do it. That's sort of understood. However, this is deemed

:17:58. > :18:00.because the start of the race is probably one of the most exciting

:18:01. > :18:05.parts so there is an opportunity to have a second option of that run to

:18:06. > :18:11.the first turn, then you should have it. I think there will be some

:18:12. > :18:16.incidents. You go back to Monaco and it was a standard start, there was

:18:17. > :18:21.one in the wrong position and two penalties as the race went on and a

:18:22. > :18:23.couple of other drivers, as well. In a standard racing start sometimes

:18:24. > :18:27.they go in the wrong place. Where it's a start where they line up and

:18:28. > :18:30.then go in their racing order, I can see there being some problems as

:18:31. > :18:34.this one is rolled out. It's interesting. Tony, what feedback

:18:35. > :18:41.have you had from the drivers so far? I absolutely endorse everything

:18:42. > :18:45.Alan said. If you worked hard to get that advantage and it's blown away

:18:46. > :18:51.and you have another start and the rest of it, it's a bit harsh. I can

:18:52. > :18:55.jaeks see why it's happened, it's -- exactly see why it's happened, it's

:18:56. > :19:00.entertainment. One of the things I did think about is if you rubbish

:19:01. > :19:04.back to 2008 and Singapore -- remember if you remember back to

:19:05. > :19:10.2008 and Singapore and there was a crash tactically and Alonso won the

:19:11. > :19:13.race. The way these guys think it opens up Formula One to a more of

:19:14. > :19:17.that kind of stuff. Strategic spinning with five lapse to go and

:19:18. > :19:21.the other guy is in second place, that kind of thing. I asked Charlie

:19:22. > :19:26.that yesterday and he said, I don't think we will get more of that, but

:19:27. > :19:30.good question, he said, we might. I don't think that sort of situation

:19:31. > :19:34.is going to arise again. There will be a big hand coming down on top of

:19:35. > :19:41.that one. It's going to be harder for the cars. They're fragile, you

:19:42. > :19:50.have five engines. You have got five pieces of the hybrid systems. If you

:19:51. > :19:54.have a second or third restart then that could take a few cars over that

:19:55. > :20:01.threshold. There might have to be a redesign of the car just to

:20:02. > :20:06.accommodate the potential of one of those situations. Some of the

:20:07. > :20:16.engineers were talking about the clutch systems which are more robust

:20:17. > :20:21.but they're not designed for the possibility you might get three

:20:22. > :20:24.starts. You could consider that. There will be redesign work to do.

:20:25. > :20:26.Two or three drivers mentioned what about a restart with badly worn

:20:27. > :20:29.tyres. Charlie's response was I don't think that will happen,

:20:30. > :20:33.they'll take the opportunity to get a new set. We will see. We will see,

:20:34. > :20:37.yeah. It's definitely going to be in the rules for next year. We will all

:20:38. > :20:41.have to get used to that. There will be certain situations where they

:20:42. > :20:44.won't come back to a standing start, within the first two lapse of the

:20:45. > :20:48.original start and they won't have to line up again. It's something we

:20:49. > :20:59.will all have to get used to next year and see how it works out. On

:21:00. > :21:03.track at the moment, Ricciardo. He has only led three laps in his

:21:04. > :21:06.Formula One year but it doesn't matter, he has that victory to his

:21:07. > :21:09.name. Those last three laps of the Canadian Grand Prix are what

:21:10. > :21:19.mattered. He is having a stellar season, you have to say. There is

:21:20. > :21:25.the disappointed Marcus Ericsson. The end of his particular session.

:21:26. > :21:33.His team-mate has gone out again. There's obviously been trouble for

:21:34. > :21:37.the other car. I think we are going to hurt the

:21:38. > :21:41.gearbox, does that mean they're using a different engine map,

:21:42. > :21:45.different settings that's making a more aggressive gear change? It's

:21:46. > :21:49.hard to know from that comment. Or whether they're worried about the

:21:50. > :21:53.gearbox for another reason. The car is back in the pits now. Fourth

:21:54. > :21:57.fasters so far, the session still led by Mercedes. Rosberg's Mercedes

:21:58. > :22:01.with the fastest time. Hamilton second.

:22:02. > :22:08.We are seeing Red Bull looking more competitive here.

:22:09. > :22:13.Now they've all done a fairly rapid lap at some point during this

:22:14. > :22:19.session they've stayed on the same set of tyres, it's unlikely we will

:22:20. > :22:35.see many improvements. Just watching Max Chiltern here. The

:22:36. > :22:44.British driver has gone a good job in qualifying the last few events.

:22:45. > :23:05.He has evened up the balance a little. It's not a bad effort.

:23:06. > :23:10.He is working on the tyre temperatures, keeping them

:23:11. > :23:16.consistent and where they need to be to deliver the quick laps. They're

:23:17. > :23:21.having a series of battles with Caterham they're generally getting

:23:22. > :23:29.the better of. Haven't new bits or huge upgrades. It's a lack of money

:23:30. > :23:32.in the Kitty, I think. Yes, indeed. Chloe Roberts, Max's girlfriend here

:23:33. > :23:38.this weekend to keep an eye on what's going on. Ricciardo's car is

:23:39. > :23:42.back in the garage. 11-and-a-half minutes to go in this first practice

:23:43. > :23:45.session of the weekend at Silverstone, building up to the

:23:46. > :23:52.British Grand Prix this weekend. The 50th running of a Grand Prix at

:23:53. > :23:56.Silverstone. It started in 1958 on a very hastily cobbled together track

:23:57. > :23:59.which was more of a butterfly shape. Two straits that were heading

:24:00. > :24:03.towards each other on the original layout of the track. They quickly

:24:04. > :24:09.changed that for subsequent races, I am glad to say. Over the years it

:24:10. > :24:13.has evolved. There have been tremendous events here, tremendous

:24:14. > :24:16.races. That history is going to be celebrated this weekend with some of

:24:17. > :24:21.the parades, some classic cars being driven here this weekend. Of course

:24:22. > :24:27.a big classic event coming up here, the historic event in a few weeks,

:24:28. > :24:41.as well, to celebrate some of the older machinery.

:24:42. > :24:48.A reminder, at Williams there is work going on to repair Massa's car

:24:49. > :24:59.from damage when he crashed. Hoping to get him back out later. A lot of

:25:00. > :25:15.work on Bottas car. Pace-wise he is in front and 5-3 up

:25:16. > :25:23.in their personal qualifying battles. He is a bit heavier than

:25:24. > :25:27.Kvyat that you pay penalty for in qualifying. He's done a decent job.

:25:28. > :25:32.Some of his performances have been strong and he suffered reliability.

:25:33. > :25:38.Qualifying he has been Q3 a number of times this year. Talking to James

:25:39. > :25:46.yesterday they've managed to get both cars down to the weight limit

:25:47. > :25:51.now even for Jean-Eric Vergne. Both cars now have to run with a little

:25:52. > :25:54.bit of balance, I believe. There is the Dutchman driving for Caterham in

:25:55. > :26:12.this session. Caterham really haven't been able to

:26:13. > :26:16.put together many lapse. -- laps. Here is Robin crossing the line and

:26:17. > :26:20.going on to a lap. Let's watch imup through the first couple of corners.

:26:21. > :26:23.No way that he is flat through the first corner. We are coming in to

:26:24. > :26:37.this arena section. It's difficult to get the power

:26:38. > :26:44.down. Big chunk of wheel spin as he came

:26:45. > :26:51.through the left-hander. Now beneath the bridge.

:26:52. > :27:01.Watch how the car behaves on exit here.

:27:02. > :27:06.A little tweak as he gets on the throttle. Does a lot of work on the

:27:07. > :27:08.simulator for Caterham, of course, but this is his chance to get behind

:27:09. > :27:28.the wheel of the car in anger. You can see, especially with the

:27:29. > :27:32.Caterham, which is at the lower end of the grid, of course, compared to

:27:33. > :27:37.the high down force we have seen on cars in recent years, they've lost a

:27:38. > :27:41.lot of down force and it's not looking as dramatic, is it? That's

:27:42. > :27:47.one of the things I noticed when I went to that test last year that

:27:48. > :27:52.Susie did. I stood down there. Oh, nearly had a big slide. Locked up a

:27:53. > :27:55.bit. Williams didn't have a lot of down force, Caterham too. The car

:27:56. > :28:02.was noticeably slower through there. You can see it. Let's see the lap

:28:03. > :28:05.time, 1. 43. 3. That's a long way off everybody really. Two-and-a-half

:28:06. > :28:10.second off his team-mate at this stage. I would imagine they're run

:28:11. > :28:14.ago lot of fuel on board. -- running a lot of fuel on board. His tyres

:28:15. > :28:17.are fresh still. He wasn't out in the first part of the session.

:28:18. > :28:21.Proving a bit of a handful the Caterham at the moment. Putting the

:28:22. > :28:24.power down there. Let's look at this lock-up.

:28:25. > :28:28.Locked up the right front which is slightly unusual there. It's usually

:28:29. > :28:34.the inside front. He sorted that out and managed to complete the lap OK.

:28:35. > :28:36.So getting his experience in, but it's not proving to be a

:28:37. > :28:40.particularly straightforward day. We get to the closing moments now.

:28:41. > :28:45.Six-and-a-half minutes to go of this first practice session at

:28:46. > :28:54.Silverstone for the 65th British Grand Prix. 22 times the race has

:28:55. > :28:58.been won by a British driver. Three British drivers in the race

:28:59. > :29:02.this weekend. Lewis Hamilton is the one most people have their hopes

:29:03. > :29:07.pinned on in trying to make it a 23rd win for a British driver. It

:29:08. > :29:11.was him that did it last in 2008. He hasn't had that opportunity, last

:29:12. > :29:14.year he was in position but the tyre failure which caused his retirement

:29:15. > :29:21.also went on to affect a few other drivers. We did have a comment, a

:29:22. > :29:24.question coming in about the kerbs, whether that was contributory in the

:29:25. > :29:29.end to the tyre failures we saw last year. I did see the main man from

:29:30. > :29:32.the MSA who does the circuit inspections yesterday and I asked

:29:33. > :29:36.that question had there been any changes to the kerbs here at

:29:37. > :29:43.Silverstone? He said, no, there was no need to. It proved to be very

:29:44. > :29:45.much a tyre problem. We saw it and they changed things after last

:29:46. > :29:57.year's British Grand Prix. There were a number of issues. Things like

:29:58. > :30:00.casters, all sorts of things, and Derek was dismissive of the idea

:30:01. > :30:05.that it was Silverstone's kerbs to blame. Yes, that's right. There

:30:06. > :30:10.hasn't been too much change there. Everybody is expecting there to be

:30:11. > :30:13.no problem. We have seen few tyre problems this year. This track does

:30:14. > :30:16.generate more force than any other we are expecting it to be

:30:17. > :30:20.straightforward. The boss at Ferrari now.

:30:21. > :30:25.We will be hearing from him over the course of this weekend. Eddie Jordan

:30:26. > :30:30.has had a interview with him which I am looking forward to. We don't know

:30:31. > :30:52.much about him. He has kept private so far. They have brought in

:30:53. > :31:12.somebody from outside the Formula One environment to do a management

:31:13. > :31:19.job, to look at the strengths and weaknesses and rejuvenate the team.

:31:20. > :31:23.It is far too early to make any judgements. We will have to see what

:31:24. > :31:30.he comes up with. A bit of talk yesterday from Kimi Raikkonen. He

:31:31. > :31:34.made a comment that he may well not be around after the end of next

:31:35. > :31:35.year. What your thoughts on that? Will he still be there next year?

:31:36. > :31:36.They need more from him. Fernando Alonso gets everything out of the

:31:37. > :31:37.car, and Kimi Raikkonen has been some distance away from him. You

:31:38. > :31:39.wonder about his motivation. Romain Grosjean is looking to move on, you

:31:40. > :31:41.do wonder about Kimi Raikkonen's position. Romain Grosjean was asked,

:31:42. > :31:49.would you be happy to go with Fernando Alonso again? Romain

:31:50. > :31:57.Grosjean left Formula One, only to return, but he said he would have no

:31:58. > :32:01.problem. He said, the last time I was against Fernando, I was very

:32:02. > :32:08.young, and today would be different. He got on well with him. It was a

:32:09. > :32:12.fairly good sales pitch! Romain Grosjean very keen to try to move

:32:13. > :32:16.into a potential race winning car again. He scored very well in the

:32:17. > :32:18.latter part of last year. again. He scored very well in the

:32:19. > :32:29.latter part Look at Fernando Alonso! No change in that time, he

:32:30. > :32:35.remains in third place. Always on the limit, Fernando Alonso. Romain

:32:36. > :32:40.Grosjean looking to get into a car that can give him back some podium

:32:41. > :32:46.finishes, after being such a high scorer last season. We are not

:32:47. > :32:49.seeing any improvement, so the order is pretty much established. Mercedes

:32:50. > :32:53.first and second, Ferrari and Red is pretty much established. Mercedes

:32:54. > :32:57.first and second, Ferrari Bull next, with Fernando Alonso and Daniel

:32:58. > :33:04.Ricciardo. Not much to choose between them. Sergio Perez is just

:33:05. > :33:27.outside the top ten. Jules Bianchi is the fastest of the

:33:28. > :33:34.backmarkers. RADIO: Just get enough of a gap for your final lap. Susie

:33:35. > :33:39.Wolff bringing up the rear in terms of times, after the problems with

:33:40. > :33:44.her car, she could not put in a representative number of laps.

:33:45. > :33:49.It has been a difficult day for Williams, Felipe Massa hitting the

:33:50. > :33:54.wall and Susie Wolff having to stop on track after four laps. Nico

:33:55. > :33:57.Rosberg is at the top of the timesheets. We are coming off

:33:58. > :34:01.there, but we will be back for the second free press this on the red

:34:02. > :34:05.button at 1:55pm, see you then.
