:01:03. > :01:09.Hello and welcome to Silverstone, the sun is starting to break through

:01:10. > :01:14.and the fans are out in force ready for practice two. This morning it

:01:15. > :01:23.was Nico Rosberg who was fasters but the focus was on Williams. Susie

:01:24. > :01:27.Wolff was the first woman in 22 years to drive a Formula One car,

:01:28. > :01:34.but there was a problem after four laps. Disappointing for her. Felipe

:01:35. > :01:38.Massa was half on turf and the kerb and his car hit the kerb hard. A lot

:01:39. > :01:44.of damage. He wasn't sure if the car would be out in time for practice

:01:45. > :01:49.two. Tom, you are down at Williams, what's the latest? Bad news, the

:01:50. > :01:54.mechanics are still working to get the car ready. He damaged all four

:01:55. > :01:57.corners. When they got the car back to the pit garage they discovered it

:01:58. > :02:07.needed a new power unit, as well. They've been flat out. Better news

:02:08. > :02:11.on Valteri, he is ready to go. The first bit of data the team has

:02:12. > :02:15.managed to get all day. The other cars, the Caterham of Ericsson,

:02:16. > :02:21.didn't manage to get too many laps in, he had a bit of a spin. He is

:02:22. > :02:25.ready to go. And Maldonado, the unlucky 13 driver has already had

:02:26. > :02:29.four race retirements so far this season and couldn't get more than

:02:30. > :02:33.two laps this morning. Hoping to get more information this afternoon.

:02:34. > :02:43.Certainly. It's been disappointing for Williams after that fantastic

:02:44. > :02:45.qualifying last time out and Bottas getting a podium.

:02:46. > :03:12.It's Mercedes all the way. This afternoon will be about trig to

:03:13. > :03:16.get as much data for Williams. For all the team trying to work out long

:03:17. > :03:23.run pace it's going to be a busy afternoon. James and Alan are in the

:03:24. > :03:26.commentary box. A a British Grand Prix, sun shining, crowds are there.

:03:27. > :03:30.It's a fantastic atmosphere. A lot of inspection, as well. Lewis

:03:31. > :03:35.Hamilton comes in to this particular race with a lot to pre-to get back

:03:36. > :03:38.in the championship. He has a confidence about him. Wasn't

:03:39. > :03:43.quickest this morning but was held up on both laps he was going for,

:03:44. > :03:47.behind Nico Rosberg. The British crowd who are definitely packing the

:03:48. > :03:52.grandstands have a good expectation of a potential British victory.

:03:53. > :04:02.Certainly is. Looking back at what happened this morning. Nico Rosberg

:04:03. > :04:08.seven 10ths of a second faster than his team-mate. Jenson Button has

:04:09. > :04:14.that special pink crash helmet he is wearing this weekend, remembering

:04:15. > :04:17.his father. Jenson Button is still grieving very much. This weekend, as

:04:18. > :04:21.in Melbourne, a big focus on his father. Obviously, he is struggling

:04:22. > :04:25.to move on really from that. We will see how the weekend pans out. A lot

:04:26. > :04:30.of support, I think, for him over the course of the weekend, as there

:04:31. > :04:34.will be for Max Chiltern. Here is Max's radio. About the same as where

:04:35. > :04:39.it was in the morning. It is clear. The temp will probably come up

:04:40. > :04:45.during the session. Wind is still gusting, a head wind on 14-15 but

:04:46. > :04:49.it's guing and moving around. -- gusting and moving around. That's

:04:50. > :04:55.Max Chiltern there. The team being told the wind is quite strong. It's

:04:56. > :05:00.9. 7 metres per second. It's a tail wind as they go past us under our

:05:01. > :05:04.window. We are above the pit strait. We are looking down to the Caterham

:05:05. > :05:11.timing stand on the pit wall. You can see the flags celebrating,

:05:12. > :05:15.Brazilian flags and Scottish flags, they're blowing strongly in the

:05:16. > :05:19.breeze. It's gusty. This used to be a World War II airfield and they

:05:20. > :05:23.don't build airfield places where there isn't any wind. It's

:05:24. > :05:27.unstabilising, destabilising for a car. It certainly is. There is a lot

:05:28. > :05:31.of buildings now and in and around the area and with it pushing you

:05:32. > :05:34.down the start of the finish strait, when you turn in to turn one you

:05:35. > :05:38.have a change of balance in the middle of the corner where the wind

:05:39. > :05:43.is blocked by the new pit building. On the other side into Copse, which

:05:44. > :05:47.is extremely fast right-hander you suddenly get the wind hitting the

:05:48. > :05:50.front of the car as you come through the apex of the corner which sends

:05:51. > :05:55.the front into a push, an understeer and the rear can become destabilised

:05:56. > :05:58.afterwards. But that's one of the standard features of Silverstone,

:05:59. > :06:03.the drivers have to get used to it and look around, look for the flags,

:06:04. > :06:09.see which way the wind is blowing. Is it a car characteristic or the

:06:10. > :06:16.wind? Just get on with it. The pit lane is open for the 90 minutes of

:06:17. > :06:20.practice. Sun is shining, the track temperature is 38C. The tyres will

:06:21. > :06:23.be close to the ideal operating window. Down in the Red Bull garage

:06:24. > :06:29.is Tom Clarkson. Yeah, not good news for Sebastian

:06:30. > :06:37.Vettel. The mechanics were preparing his car and they've had a brake

:06:38. > :06:45.bleed problem. They're working away. Sebastian Vettel came in a moment

:06:46. > :06:58.ago, he talked to the mink. Christian said -- with the

:06:59. > :07:01.mechanics. Times like this, as down at the

:07:02. > :07:06.Williams garage at the moment working very hard to repair that car

:07:07. > :07:11.of Felipe Massa after that big accident he suffered. Yeah, the

:07:12. > :07:17.mechanics are artists in their own way. As a driver you feel the

:07:18. > :07:21.smallest details and differences between the car. We heard this

:07:22. > :07:26.morning with one or two drivers complaining about the steering, and

:07:27. > :07:32.tiny millimetre details. It all has to be perfect. When it's perfect you

:07:33. > :07:37.get a situation like Nico Rosberg and Mercedes. We saw Lewis Hamilton

:07:38. > :07:41.there in the background with the Mercedes, streamliner car as it was

:07:42. > :07:46.known because the wheels were covered up. Even back in the 1950s,

:07:47. > :07:50.that was a 1954 car, they were across the idea of aerodynamics even

:07:51. > :07:53.though down force hadn't been considered at that point. That car,

:07:54. > :07:59.I understand, is the car which exactly 40 years ago to the day won

:08:00. > :08:10.the French Grand Prix. So a real piece of history. Talking - 60

:08:11. > :08:16.years, I beg my pardon. I was saying you don't want to drop

:08:17. > :08:22.a spanner on that. It's a working environment in that garage. That car

:08:23. > :08:27.conservatively worth 20 million, maybe more. It's a bit of history.

:08:28. > :08:33.We are here at the present and the latest, greatest of the technologies

:08:34. > :08:40.as we see Bottas, now getting first laps on circuit. He gave his car to

:08:41. > :08:43.Susie Wolff this morning and obviously quite anxious when he saw

:08:44. > :08:47.it stopping at the side of the road. Now he is out on track getting a

:08:48. > :08:52.first feel for Silverstone and these conditions. Williams have had a good

:08:53. > :09:00.run of form recently with Felipe Massa being on pole in the last

:09:01. > :09:04.Grand Prix in Austria. Bottas with a podium finish. They're on good form.

:09:05. > :09:08.That's what makes Susie's run equally unusual, not just the first

:09:09. > :09:16.time a woman has driven a frm la one car in an official session for 22

:09:17. > :09:20.years -- Formula One car. To be given a chance to go out in a

:09:21. > :09:24.front-running car is unusual, it's a shame for Susie she managed to do

:09:25. > :09:33.four laps before there was an oil pressure problem. This is that same

:09:34. > :09:38.car. Now Bottas is driving for the Williams team. He was happy to give

:09:39. > :09:41.his car up this morning, relatively speak, I guess, but she will have

:09:42. > :09:47.another chance at the next Grand Prix in Germany in two weeks' time.

:09:48. > :09:52.First real experience of this Silverstone track this year for

:09:53. > :09:56.Bottas. The wind has dropped down a little bit. But still gusty by

:09:57. > :09:59.Formula One standards. That's a strong breeze. We don't normally go

:10:00. > :10:03.many places where the wind is stronger than that. It's the gusts

:10:04. > :10:06.that affect the car balance more than anything else. It's

:10:07. > :10:09.inconsistent, one lap it can be worse than the next and you are

:10:10. > :10:28.trying to predict it all the time. We are on board there with Bottas.

:10:29. > :10:32.He will build up to speed. Lap two and three will be the ones where he

:10:33. > :10:38.will start to feel it. A lot of work to do for the Williams team, they

:10:39. > :10:43.managed 11 laps in total of which meaningful laps were short. A lot of

:10:44. > :10:56.work to do if you compare it with Rosberg and Hamilton.

:10:57. > :11:03.Hot air comes through from the engine that comes to the cockpit and

:11:04. > :11:07.heats up the driver's side. If one of the seals is not exactly perfect

:11:08. > :11:12.then it can let that hot air bleed into the driver. Rosberg and

:11:13. > :11:16.Hamilton did combine 47 laps this morning. That's what you call

:11:17. > :11:20.gathering homework. Williams have a lot of catching up to do. Jenson

:11:21. > :11:24.Button in the McLaren crosses the line to go fastest for the moment

:11:25. > :11:33.with an hour and 23 minutes of this session remaining. It's Button.

:11:34. > :11:43.Fastest time this morning Rosberg. Hamilton didn't really get a clear

:11:44. > :11:56.run at it, so he was seven 10ths of a second behind.

:11:57. > :12:03.The problems don't seem to be going away for the Sauber team. It's not a

:12:04. > :12:06.vintage season for them. I spoke to Adrian this morning and standard

:12:07. > :12:11.practice, they're scrabbling for grip. The car's understeering, the

:12:12. > :12:14.front doesn't work and the rear on the throttle snaps. That corner

:12:15. > :12:17.where we saw, it's a standard situation around there where you are

:12:18. > :12:22.always fighting both ends of the car. The understeer in the middle

:12:23. > :12:24.and the rear end coming out. It just looks difficult and inconsistent and

:12:25. > :12:28.that's been from the first time we saw it in Australia to now. It's

:12:29. > :12:32.interesting, there in the -- they're in the same position after eight

:12:33. > :12:35.races that Williams were in last year, they got no points on the

:12:36. > :12:39.board. Then if you look at the turnaround this year for Williams,

:12:40. > :12:44.the Mercedes power unit is clearly a big part of the story, but Force

:12:45. > :12:47.India and McLaren have the same engine and McLaren are well behind

:12:48. > :12:52.Williams in the standings. Williams have 85 points. Compared to zero

:12:53. > :12:56.last year. It shows it can be done. If you look at just how motor racing

:12:57. > :13:01.is, two weeks ago Williams had their best weekend for a long time ap then

:13:02. > :13:04.suddenly we are looking at the end of practice and one car was in the

:13:05. > :13:08.wall and the other in the pits. When you think you are up, suddenly you

:13:09. > :13:11.get a wakening and you are back down again.

:13:12. > :13:15.So just up to speed on other talking points from the morning session,

:13:16. > :13:20.Maldonado didn't do very much mileage, no laps at all. He has work

:13:21. > :13:24.to do. Technical problems once again for the Venezuelan driver. We heard

:13:25. > :13:29.earlier that Vettel has a problem with the brake bleeds. He is having

:13:30. > :13:32.some work done on his car. His team-mate Ricciardo was fourth

:13:33. > :13:38.fastest this morning in the Red Bull but he had his run cut short by a

:13:39. > :13:43.gear box niggle. Red Bull obviously not having the clearest of runs

:13:44. > :13:48.reliability-wise. Vettel was unable to finish the last Grand Prix in

:13:49. > :13:51.Austria after a problem with the electronic control unit that

:13:52. > :13:55.required him to park the car by the side of the race track for 60

:13:56. > :13:58.seconds to reset. It's the only way that he could get the thing reset

:13:59. > :14:10.and eventually he was forced to retire the car anyway. Jenson Button

:14:11. > :14:15.is struggling a little bit for he accelerates down the hangar

:14:16. > :14:19.straight. It is just a wind affected situation. He got into the apex and

:14:20. > :14:25.suddenly front of the car washed out. Jenson Button getting up to

:14:26. > :14:30.speed with the car. It is quite warm today. The track temperature is 38

:14:31. > :14:35.degrees and that will help their car, they tend to struggle to get

:14:36. > :14:40.the front tyres up to temperature. It is looking as if it is working

:14:41. > :14:45.right now. It is two seconds away from Nico Rosberg.

:14:46. > :14:53.RADIO: We have too much traffic. We have an option to let all of these

:14:54. > :14:59.guys through. Sergio Perez of Force India, he is in a gaggle of cars

:15:00. > :15:01.with Maldonado, Chilton and Bianchi circulating together. They are

:15:02. > :15:09.asking them to let them through or find some clear space. We have quite

:15:10. > :15:16.a few cars on track at the moment, it is 16 of the total 22. Vettel and

:15:17. > :15:21.Ricciardo are in the pits. Rosberg and Hamilton have gone on track for

:15:22. > :15:29.the first time. Felipe Massa is having his car rebid. I am loving

:15:30. > :15:34.looking out of the commentary box window and I can see four

:15:35. > :15:38.grandstands from left to right. This is like race day at a lot of other

:15:39. > :15:43.venues and it is Friday for practice.

:15:44. > :15:53.RADIO: I think the wind is affecting a lot. If you have an understeering

:15:54. > :15:59.balance, the wind will push it in that direction. If it is an over

:16:00. > :16:03.steer, it makes it more so. Force India are a team that doesn't

:16:04. > :16:07.necessarily have a heck of a lot of downforce. They are bit on the edge

:16:08. > :16:13.down here in the high downforce setup. It makes it incredibly

:16:14. > :16:18.tricky. One team we have seen going better is Ferrari. This circuit will

:16:19. > :16:22.suit them. They should be quite strong around here. I would expect

:16:23. > :16:26.them and Red Bull to be not necessarily fighting for the

:16:27. > :16:30.ultimate victory, but to be somewhere near there. Valtteri

:16:31. > :16:37.Bottas goes quickest at this moment. Williams may be not able to repeat

:16:38. > :16:42.the performance they had in Austria. Everyone running the harder Pirelli

:16:43. > :16:44.compound, it is medium and hard, the hardest of the range that
