:00:58. > :00:57.Whether it's because it's slightly all day. Encouraging for the
:00:58. > :00:57.McLaren. It's all day. Encouraging for the
:00:58. > :00:57.medium tyre. Clearly Red Bull feel there's
:00:58. > :00:58.medium tyre. Clearly Red Bull feel behind the two Mercedes cars. As we
:00:59. > :00:58.suspected, it's Hamilton and Rosberg at
:00:59. > :00:58.here at Silverstone. The crowd here would love it if
:00:59. > :01:18.here at Silverstone. The crowd here the time sheets despite the fact
:01:19. > :01:27.the British Grand Prix. Not long until free practice three and not
:01:28. > :01:31.long until qualifying. Yesterday morning in the dry it was Nico
:01:32. > :01:34.Rosberg who was fastest and in the afternoon it was Lewis Hamilton,
:01:35. > :01:38.despite the fact that his Mercedes had an oil pressure problem and
:01:39. > :01:43.stopped out on track on the losing invaluable track time and data. He
:01:44. > :01:47.missed about a third of the session which is crucial at this stage of
:01:48. > :01:49.the weekend. Lewis Hamilton got pole position last year, Nico Rosberg won
:01:50. > :02:26.the race. In the pit lane we have Tom
:02:27. > :02:32.Clarkson, what is the weather looking like? We haven't had any
:02:33. > :02:39.rain in the pit lane for about an hour, there is a nice strong wind of
:02:40. > :02:43.four metres per second drying big -- the track. The teams will have to be
:02:44. > :02:47.very careful how they use the intermediate tyres because they only
:02:48. > :02:51.have four for the whole weekend. The weather being so unpredictable, they
:02:52. > :02:57.might need some of those during qualifying. There is a 60% chance of
:02:58. > :03:04.rain during this session. The clouds look pretty dark. One of us two will
:03:05. > :03:10.get caught out, I have gone for the dry spec I hope it will stay dry but
:03:11. > :03:17.it looks unlikely. You have to feel sorry for the thousands of people
:03:18. > :03:22.whose -- who spent the night camping. Jenson Button is just
:03:23. > :03:25.getting in his car, McLaren have gone from being number one in the
:03:26. > :03:31.constructors after the first race to being in sixth place now. They will
:03:32. > :03:33.be hoping for better this weekend. You can probably make out Jenson
:03:34. > :03:37.Button's helmet which he will be wearing as a mark of respect to his
:03:38. > :03:48.father who passed away will stop they are hoping to turn the
:03:49. > :03:54.grandstands think. -- pink. I have gone for the pessimistic wet weather
:03:55. > :03:57.setup. You can get involved in this session through social media come on
:03:58. > :04:06.the details are below. The commentators will try to read
:04:07. > :04:12.out as many comments as they can. It could be quite a busy session. Let's
:04:13. > :04:17.hope so. We're looking forward to some action, it is only a 60 minute
:04:18. > :04:24.session. This rebuilds us towards qualifying. It is important, as much
:04:25. > :04:29.as they have to think about their tyre allocation, they have to get
:04:30. > :04:32.used to be circuit. It is wet, yesterday was completely dry,
:04:33. > :04:36.suggestions are it will be at least for qualifying. Predictions for
:04:37. > :04:41.tomorrow are a bit sketchy. Lewis Hamilton has been enjoying looking
:04:42. > :04:44.around this Mercedes car in the Mercedes garage this week and,
:04:45. > :04:49.somewhat ever on to be Formula One car he will be competing in this
:04:50. > :04:53.weekend. Mercedes had a notable victory in the British Grand Prix in
:04:54. > :04:59.1955 when it was at Aintree, although they missed out in 1954.
:05:00. > :05:05.They had a win here last year thanks to Nico Rosberg. It was a victory
:05:06. > :05:08.that Rosberg rather inherited. Not only did Lewis Hamilton have a tyre
:05:09. > :05:13.failure, Sebastian Vettel was leading the Grand Prix and he
:05:14. > :05:21.suffered a rare gearbox failure. This year, Sebastian Vettel has been
:05:22. > :05:26.less lucky with his reliability. Generally he has not had perfect
:05:27. > :05:32.reliability. It has hit him in races this year. The car has not had the
:05:33. > :05:36.pure speed to win races when it has been clean for him. It has been a
:05:37. > :05:42.tough time. Daniel Ricciardo, his new team-mates, seems to be
:05:43. > :05:46.revelling in the setup at Red Bull but also in the way the cars are
:05:47. > :05:54.running behind Brit systems. He has put the pressure on Sebastian Vettel
:05:55. > :05:58.-- running the hybrid systems. It will be interesting to see this
:05:59. > :06:02.weekend, Vettel has had a couple of pole positions in the past, he has
:06:03. > :06:05.been outqualified by Daniel Ricciardo on a number of occasions
:06:06. > :06:10.this year. We will wait to find out what happens.
:06:11. > :06:17.Quite a lot of damp areas around the circuit. We had AGP qualifying
:06:18. > :06:22.session this morning and they took the worst of the puddles of the
:06:23. > :06:31.track -- we had a GP3 qualifying session. There is a bit of work on
:06:32. > :06:36.the right-hand front brake area. He had a huge shunt yesterday in
:06:37. > :06:40.practice, took all four corners of the car, right at the beginning of
:06:41. > :06:46.the session. They are a bit late in getting the break shrouding --
:06:47. > :06:50.brake. There are not so many puddles any longer, it is purely
:06:51. > :06:59.intermediate weather. This circuit is quite greasy, you can see the
:07:00. > :07:06.lighter sections. Until the cask go with a bit of speed and the down
:07:07. > :07:14.first -- the cars go with them speed and
:07:15. > :07:19.there are some dry patches, says Jenson Button. He is feeding that
:07:20. > :07:26.back to be team because they don't want to tear up these intermediate
:07:27. > :07:29.tyres too much. The green indicates it is the intermediate tyre. If he
:07:30. > :07:35.stays out there it will do a bit more. In a few places there is some
:07:36. > :07:39.spray being picked up. You can see how slippery and sliding it is as he
:07:40. > :07:47.tries to get on the power out of club corner. It is normally a
:07:48. > :07:51.flat-out right-hander but it is in fifth year as he accelerates and
:07:52. > :07:56.gently comes through, raking in to turn three. This is the slowest
:07:57. > :08:00.corner of the circuit. In the dry you would want to hit the apex but
:08:01. > :08:05.he hasn't got the front group to get near it on this lap. One of the
:08:06. > :08:11.problems McLaren have had is generating the tyre temperature.
:08:12. > :08:14.Jenson is very smooth, it has its benefits but in these intermediate
:08:15. > :08:19.and greasy conditions, it is probably not his ideal scenario. In
:08:20. > :08:24.the dry this weekend we have the harder compounds of tyre that
:08:25. > :08:29.Pirelli bring. McLaren was saying yesterday that their challenge is
:08:30. > :08:34.indeed getting those hard temperatures in the heart tyre. That
:08:35. > :08:40.has been their problem so far. Let's quickly remind you of the fastest
:08:41. > :08:50.times from yesterday. Lewis Hamilton set the pace, despite the problem
:08:51. > :08:57.that denied him a full race run. Nico Rosberg was second fastest,
:08:58. > :09:00.Alonso for Ferrari was third. Always difficult to know if the Friday pace
:09:01. > :09:09.will be converted into qualifying pace. Then the Red Bulls were next
:09:10. > :09:15.up. This track perhaps isn't quite as beneficial as it was in Austria
:09:16. > :09:21.because Bottas was sixth fastest. Massa was 11th fastest. They had a
:09:22. > :09:26.very difficult day as Jenson Button is trying to get off the drying
:09:27. > :09:35.racing line to cool his intermediate tyres. I presume he will head back
:09:36. > :09:43.towards the pits and sit and wait. Williams have lifted their game,
:09:44. > :09:50.they will be better but they will not be as good as in Austria. Just
:09:51. > :09:55.watching the Ferrari come out of the pits? Alonso, Raikkonen and Rosberg
:09:56. > :10:05.are heading out on to track and they have gone with the full wet tyres. A
:10:06. > :10:09.real mixture down here. They have an extra allocation of three full wet
:10:10. > :10:14.tyres and four of the intermediates. The intermediate is the tyre they
:10:15. > :10:19.would most likely use this afternoon if it is damp and wet for
:10:20. > :10:24.qualifying, and also for tomorrow. It is better to burn up a full wet,
:10:25. > :10:31.extreme wet, than an intermediate, that is probably the reason. We are
:10:32. > :10:37.seeing the likes of Sutil out on the full wet, Bianchi, Chilton and hot
:10:38. > :10:45.as as well. Vettel has gone on the intermediate -- Chilton and Bottas.
:10:46. > :10:50.Williams had a reasonable run yesterday apart from their problems.
:10:51. > :10:55.The first session denied them very many laps at all, a decent pace in
:10:56. > :11:00.the afternoon. McLaren were next up, seventh and eighth fastest. Kimi
:11:01. > :11:18.Raikkonen was a little way off his team-mate comedy was ninth fastest.
:11:19. > :11:23.--, team-mate, he was ninth fastest. Toro Rosso could be a team to keep
:11:24. > :11:28.an eye on this weekend to get into the points, they look pretty good.
:11:29. > :11:40.They were good last year as well. That was the point when a Red Bull
:11:41. > :11:49.engineer said one of the Toro Rosso drivers would step into the vacant
:11:50. > :11:54.Red Bull seed. The gaggle in the middle of the top ten will be hotly
:11:55. > :11:58.contested. Kimi Raikkonen had a tough time trying to get the car
:11:59. > :12:03.balance to his liking. He was happy in the morning but not in the
:12:04. > :12:09.afternoon. Much more tread visible on the full wet tyre. Trying to pick
:12:10. > :12:12.up some water to cool those wet tyres as he goes down the start
:12:13. > :12:19.finish straight and through Copse Corner. And into Becketts. This is
:12:20. > :12:23.where you lose edge and is amount of speed in comparison to the drive.
:12:24. > :12:28.This is normally one of the fastest and best sections of circuit in the
:12:29. > :12:34.world, I think. As you flick it right, left, Right and left and down
:12:35. > :12:39.towards Hangar Straight, now down towards Stowe and the last couple of
:12:40. > :12:43.corners. It is the corner where Felipe Massa had his accident
:12:44. > :12:50.yesterday and Daniil Kvyat nearly repeated it. He stays off the kerb,
:12:51. > :12:56.headed into the pits. Add a quick conversation with Kimi Raikkonen
:12:57. > :13:01.manager this morning, talking about his time at Ferrari. He was saying,
:13:02. > :13:06.that team is very much centred around Fernando Alonso. They have
:13:07. > :13:09.very different driving styles, Fernando Alonso likes the rear of
:13:10. > :13:14.the car to be planted and he works with the front end. Kimi Raikkonen
:13:15. > :13:18.likes a responsive front end. It is a missed a polar opposite in terms
:13:19. > :13:23.of what they are looking for from the car -- almost a polar opposite.
:13:24. > :13:28.Kimi Raikkonen came into Ferrari, Fernando Alonso's team, he has
:13:29. > :13:34.moulded the development for such a long period of time. Felipe Massa's
:13:35. > :13:38.driving style was similar. He has a unique situation where he will throw
:13:39. > :13:44.the front of the car in, really throw it in, and then come back on
:13:45. > :13:48.the steering to find the grip angle. Kimi Raikkonen has certainly
:13:49. > :13:54.struggled and not produced the performances I expected from him or
:13:55. > :13:59.Ferrari. It has been disappointing so far, we will see how he gets on.
:14:00. > :14:06.Will he be able to produce anything like that? A great run of podium
:14:07. > :14:10.finishes in the mid-2000s. We will have to see what happens. Ferrari
:14:11. > :14:15.did find a problem with Raikkonen's cap, that is interesting. He was
:14:16. > :14:21.complaining that it something is not quite right -- Raikkonen's car. We
:14:22. > :14:28.have had confirmation they found something specific, they are not
:14:29. > :14:31.telling us exactly what. If you want to keep in touch with the
:14:32. > :14:37.behind-the-scenes stories, you can go to the BBC F1 website, there is a
:14:38. > :14:43.live text service as well. Thank you for your comments. This one says,
:14:44. > :14:48.good morning, what effect would Lewis Hamilton's failure yesterday
:14:49. > :14:56.have on his race? He missed out on his similar to race run. --
:14:57. > :15:01.simulated. It will have an effect because it is laps he missed in
:15:02. > :15:07.comparison to Nico Rosberg. Lewis Hamilton did 14, Rosberg did 35. It
:15:08. > :15:10.was the long run laps, he had Audie done his short performance run and
:15:11. > :15:17.they were just arty -- he had already done. And they were just
:15:18. > :15:22.starting. The team will understand it but Lewis Hamilton will miss a
:15:23. > :15:25.bit of a field. The fact that the conditions are completely different,
:15:26. > :15:29.and possibly tomorrow, brings it back onto a level keel again.
:15:30. > :15:33.However, you want to be out on the circuit and doing the laps. You
:15:34. > :15:38.don't want your team-mate necessarily to lose it but you would
:15:39. > :15:45.want your car to be the reliable one. The wind has dropped in
:15:46. > :15:48.strength considerably. It was gusty yesterday. We saw a lot of drivers
:15:49. > :15:52.talked about it after the session, about how it was blowing the car,
:15:53. > :15:55.some corners it made the car grip too quickly into turns and other
:15:56. > :16:01.corners it was making it understeer or run wide. It's a big factor here,
:16:02. > :16:10.it's an airfield circuit. Lewis Hamilton comes out of the pit lane.
:16:11. > :16:13.You have got such an open airfield, big grandstands now, also two pit
:16:14. > :16:16.buildings, one here where we are sitting right now and one, the old
:16:17. > :16:19.one on the other side of the circuit, and when you pop out behind
:16:20. > :16:24.those buildings suddenly this gust of wind hits you and if it hits the
:16:25. > :16:29.front or rear of the car first it affects the balance aspect. It's
:16:30. > :16:33.inconsistent. Yesterday it was -- yesterday it was gusting and it was
:16:34. > :16:37.difficult to predict what was a track condition and car balance and
:16:38. > :16:40.what was just wind. Daniel Ricciardo looking very chilled at the moment
:16:41. > :16:44.as he prepares to come out on circuit. The winner of the Canadian
:16:45. > :16:49.Grand Prix, the only man to have won a race apart from the two Mercedes
:16:50. > :16:52.drivers so far this year. That was quite a surprise to everybody
:16:53. > :16:57.concerned but of course Mercedes had their problems there. Ericsson going
:16:58. > :16:59.out on circuit for Caterham. Nobody's established a lap time as
:17:00. > :17:09.such. They had a good run here last year.
:17:10. > :17:12.Daniel Ricciardo got their best ever results at Silverstone
:17:13. > :17:16.place finish last year and qualified in 5th. Fernando Alonso looking
:17:17. > :17:21.somewhat thoughtful at this stage of proceedings. Still under 50 minutes
:17:22. > :17:27.to go in this final practice session leading to qualifying. Three times a
:17:28. > :17:32.pole-sitter himself at this circuit, and has had a couple of wins go his
:17:33. > :17:37.way, as well. We will get more data on this.
:17:38. > :17:41.Cancel the magic, that's a setting presumably on the steering wheel,
:17:42. > :17:48.but it sounds quite fun! Sounds excellent, if you ask me. They
:17:49. > :17:55.should all have settings, instead of L3, Hammer Time is what they said to
:17:56. > :17:59.him in Austrian. There is no question they understand and ne that
:18:00. > :18:04.we are listening and working out what's going on and they also the
:18:05. > :18:08.other teams, as well, they don't want to show their hand too much.
:18:09. > :18:11.Lewis Hamilton doing another standing start, using the
:18:12. > :18:15.opportunity when track conditions aren't in perfect place to do some
:18:16. > :18:20.running, just to get some of this basic work done to ensure, as he is
:18:21. > :18:24.sitting there, the clutch is doing a biting point, his hands aren't even
:18:25. > :18:28.on the wheel, he will pull the two paddals on the bottom, activate the
:18:29. > :18:32.procedure and then accelerate out, give more data to the team so that
:18:33. > :18:38.they understand what he needs and what the clutch needs for the start.
:18:39. > :18:43.The only two cars on track are the two Caterhams, I think. Tom, I think
:18:44. > :18:47.you are at McLaren. I am and I am outside McLaren. Bad news for me and
:18:48. > :18:51.my shirt, it's starting to rain again. The track conditions are
:18:52. > :18:56.going to get worse. Jenson Button is now out of his car. He has been
:18:57. > :19:00.having a chat with his race engineer. The word from McLaren is
:19:01. > :19:11.that they think there is no point wasting the tyres, both Jenson
:19:12. > :19:14.Button and Kevin Magnussen have... If you look at the front brake
:19:15. > :19:19.ducts, it gives you a glue on the conditions. You see that McLaren
:19:20. > :19:23.have taped over those front ducts to try and help retain some temperature
:19:24. > :19:29.in the front brakes. There's little braking here, particularly in the
:19:30. > :19:35.middle sector from Copse through to Stowe. Interesting how they're
:19:36. > :19:39.having to go to slightly basic measures of taping up the front
:19:40. > :19:46.brake ducts. It's a quick and easy way of adjustment. They had those on
:19:47. > :19:51.yesterday even in the dry. Once the brakes are hot, that also feeds back
:19:52. > :19:55.to the tyre and works the front tyre a little better. So it's not just
:19:56. > :20:01.necessarily just working the brake, it's also working the tyre. A bit of
:20:02. > :20:05.rain might not necessarily be good for you, Tom, but it's going to be
:20:06. > :20:08.good for us, it will give hopefully a clear indication that the circuit
:20:09. > :20:12.is going to be wet and we will get more cars out on track. A few
:20:13. > :20:16.comments coming in about the change in weather conditions here today.
:20:17. > :20:20.Nathan asking, if the rain falls for the race and the forecast for
:20:21. > :20:23.tomorrow might be the odd shower around, so it isn't impossible, if
:20:24. > :20:27.the rain falls for the race who might perform the best in your
:20:28. > :20:32.opinion? This is a change of circuit anyway in comparison to what we have
:20:33. > :20:36.had in the last two in Canada and Austria which were very much slow
:20:37. > :20:40.corners, big long straits. Around here it's all very high speed
:20:41. > :20:44.corners. The average corner speed is significantly higher than it was in
:20:45. > :20:47.Austria. I would expect that Red Bull will be strong around here
:20:48. > :20:54.anyway. In the dry I think Ferrari will be good. Maybe a little bit
:20:55. > :20:58.less so in the wet. Alonso will probably... Toro Rosso you can never
:20:59. > :21:01.discount. But ultimately, you are going to see it's Mercedes at the
:21:02. > :21:11.front. In the pit lane, Jenny, you are at
:21:12. > :21:16.Force India, they had a tough day yesterday. 16th and 17th. What are
:21:17. > :21:21.they telling you today? They did have a tough day. Hulkenberg was
:21:22. > :21:25.adamant at the end of the session they need to do better. He is in his
:21:26. > :21:30.car waiting to go out. Like Tom said, the brake ducts are taped up
:21:31. > :21:34.almost. A tiny slot on those. Just at the back of the garage you can
:21:35. > :21:39.see Sergio Perez stood there meeting some of the guests, partners of
:21:40. > :21:43.Force India. But he had a tough day, as well. He was asked comments and
:21:44. > :21:49.thoughts about maybe being a team-mate of Susie Wolff and he sort
:21:50. > :21:53.of said something along the lines of, it would be terrible to be
:21:54. > :21:57.beaten by a girl. Then very flippantly said, well, you know,
:21:58. > :22:04.they're best in the kippen anyway. -- kitchen. The media in Mexico
:22:05. > :22:09.picked up on this and went crazy. He has received a lot of flak and the
:22:10. > :22:13.team are trying to manage it. Susie came out in support and has taken to
:22:14. > :22:17.Twitter saying his comments were taken out of context. As my family
:22:18. > :22:21.will tell you, I drive better than I cook. She's obviously in the taking
:22:22. > :22:26.it to heart too much. But it has kicked up a little bit of fuss.
:22:27. > :22:29.Sergio Perez seems to be putting his small racing boot into his mouth a
:22:30. > :22:33.couple of times too many this season. Right, hopefully he can
:22:34. > :22:36.focus on the driving here today. Seeing some of the cars getting a
:22:37. > :22:40.little bit out of shape. It looks as though there is a touch more rain in
:22:41. > :22:43.the air now than at the very beginning of this session. It's
:22:44. > :22:47.going to be a tough one to learn much. What it also means is that
:22:48. > :22:52.Lewis Hamilton isn't going to get that kind of race run that he hoped
:22:53. > :22:55.to plan for this morning. They had talked about changing their run plan
:22:56. > :22:58.in order to make up for that time he lost yesterday. Clearly he is not
:22:59. > :23:03.going to be able to do that and he has done three lapse but they've all
:23:04. > :23:19.been installation laps so far and hasn't completed a flying lap. The
:23:20. > :23:28.two cars that have done that are Ericsson and Kobay -- Kobayashi.
:23:29. > :23:31.A big slide there for Kvyat a second ago. He looks impressive in these
:23:32. > :23:35.conditions. He was in Brazil in the first practice at the end of last
:23:36. > :23:38.year when he got one of his first opportunities to drive in Formula
:23:39. > :23:43.One and he was breathtaking even then. Clearly he enjoys driving in
:23:44. > :23:46.these conditions. Toro Rosso regularly send their drivers out
:23:47. > :23:51.when conditions are tricky. Good experience, of course, for Daniel
:23:52. > :23:56.Kvyat. Let's look at that again and see how well he corrected it. It's a
:23:57. > :24:01.very tricky corner. It's adverse and you have to get the front of the car
:24:02. > :24:06.and throw the front in otherwise you understeer when you come through it
:24:07. > :24:10.and he obviously threw the front in and kept the power in. The rear came
:24:11. > :24:13.around. Interestingly there is a clarification last night because
:24:14. > :24:18.yesterday a lot of drivers were driving completely off the circuit
:24:19. > :24:21.there. Charlie Whiting, the race director, said from qualifying
:24:22. > :24:24.onwards anybody that does that will have time taken away from them as
:24:25. > :24:32.they did in Austria when they ran wide at turn eight. That's one to
:24:33. > :24:42.watch. That's his team-mate Jean-skaep Eric Vergne. --
:24:43. > :24:47.Jean-Eric. Copse and the last corner, where you can do it and gain
:24:48. > :24:51.time. Most corners if you run wide you lose time, but not at those two.
:24:52. > :24:55.You can see the extra rain on the camera showing how much wetter it
:24:56. > :25:00.is. Jean-Eric is fastest in this session in the Toro Rosso at the
:25:01. > :25:04.moment. Toro Rosso's only ever Grand Prix victory came in the wet
:25:05. > :25:08.conditions when Sebastian Vettel took that first and only win for the
:25:09. > :25:12.team. I don't think they're going to be in the same position here.
:25:13. > :25:16.Nonetheless, they've been showing well and potential points scorers
:25:17. > :25:23.this weekend. A yellow fromming out there somewhere in sector seven --
:25:24. > :25:29.yellow flag out there. Jean-Eric was 10th fastest yesterday. He is 19
:25:30. > :25:37.seconds off the pace. What about the tyres? Car balance, it's really hard
:25:38. > :25:44.to drive. We saw that on the last corner there, that was clear to see.
:25:45. > :25:47.He had a big oversteer on the - it's turning and reactive, the rear can't
:25:48. > :25:50.keep up and especially around here, because you are trying to accelerate
:25:51. > :25:54.and come through the last and it drops away and it's fish-tailing.
:25:55. > :26:00.You have to squeeze on the throttle so gently or you get a massive
:26:01. > :26:05.build-up and snap oversteer. He is still fastest, that was a better lap
:26:06. > :26:08.for Jean-Eric. He goes up to the arena section. Another question from
:26:09. > :26:12.Paul saying how much slower are the cars lapping Silverstone this year
:26:13. > :26:16.with the hybrid units compared to the V8 era? I can tell you that last
:26:17. > :26:23.year in this third practice session in the dry they were looking at
:26:24. > :26:27.times of one minute 31, we are not dry in this session obviously.
:26:28. > :26:31.Yesterday they were about two seconds, just over two seconds
:26:32. > :26:34.slower, than last year with the V8. I don't think it's necessarily the
:26:35. > :26:39.engine side of things. The top speeds were quick, it was over
:26:40. > :26:44.200mph yesterday. But it's more the lack of downforce and also they've a
:26:45. > :26:47.much harder tyre than last year. Last year at Silverstone is where
:26:48. > :26:51.there was a tremendous amount of tyre failures and since then Pirelli
:26:52. > :26:55.have had to make the tyres significantly more robust and this
:26:56. > :26:59.year they've made the compounds a little bit harder. Whereas with the
:27:00. > :27:04.medium last year I would say it was a bit faster than in 2014. Pirelli
:27:05. > :27:07.announced they're going to be testing an 18-inch tyre when testing
:27:08. > :27:12.takes place here later this week, which is a new introduction and
:27:13. > :27:17.13-inch tyre is used in Formula One at the moment. Big profile tyre. You
:27:18. > :27:21.don't have the low profile tyre that you use in sports car racing, for
:27:22. > :27:25.example. It would be a major shift for Formula One if they went down
:27:26. > :27:29.this route. It's more relevant to what they use in everything else in
:27:30. > :27:34.cars and other forms of motor sport. Therefore, they're being tested next
:27:35. > :27:38.week as a little bit of a sort of toe in the water to see if that's
:27:39. > :27:40.the way they want to go. When Michelin were talking about coming
:27:41. > :27:45.into Formula One they stipulated that only if they went to that size
:27:46. > :27:55.of tyre would they look at it. Magnussen's radio. How is the track,
:27:56. > :28:02.would you like to continue? There is a lot less... Kevin Magnussen has
:28:03. > :28:06.not done a full time lap yet. Has done several installation laps to
:28:07. > :28:10.get a feel. Rosberg comes back to the pits. Same for him, he done two
:28:11. > :28:17.very quick sector times there, Ross ber. We have been fastest --
:28:18. > :28:21.Rosberg. He would have been fastest. Looking after the tyres making sure
:28:22. > :28:28.they don't use too many sets before they wet into qualifying. Some more
:28:29. > :28:32.of your comments coming in, thank you very much for those. Hannah
:28:33. > :28:37.saying, do we think Susie can get a race seat in the coming seasons? She
:28:38. > :28:42.missed out on much opportunity to drive yesterday with the problems
:28:43. > :28:46.she had. She will be out in Germany next time. A race seat is another
:28:47. > :28:50.matter, we will have to wait and find out. Joining us now is team
:28:51. > :28:53.principal of Red Bull racing Christian Horner. Morning, it's a
:28:54. > :28:57.little bit more slippery than yesterday. Absolutely. Just
:28:58. > :29:01.listening to the comments about Susie, she is having a word with her
:29:02. > :29:07.husband really, surely he can influence a bit of a race seat. You
:29:08. > :29:10.are not offering a seat at Red Bull? Unfortunately not, she did a great
:29:11. > :29:15.job yesterday in the small amount of time she had. It would be great to
:29:16. > :29:20.have a woman in Formula One, Toto should definitely make that happen.
:29:21. > :29:23.Another driver is a test driver for Sauber, the Red Bull junior
:29:24. > :29:28.programmes, we see a lot of drivers coming through, are there any female
:29:29. > :29:31.drivers on the books? We had one. She's not on the books any more.
:29:32. > :29:35.Yeah, we are always looking at talent. If you go to the grass roots
:29:36. > :29:40.and look at carting now there is a lot of young girls that are doing a
:29:41. > :29:45.great job there. It's a matter of time before we find a quick one.
:29:46. > :29:49.Let's get to matters of the moment. What's going on this weekend, what
:29:50. > :29:55.about the weather forecast, what's the latest in terms of what we will
:29:56. > :29:59.see for qualifying and for the race? Well, it's a bit more of this for
:30:00. > :30:02.this morning and it's supposed to be getting brighter this afternoon.
:30:03. > :30:09.Could well be one of those really sort of, you know, wet and dry
:30:10. > :30:12.qualifyings, at 1.00pm, so everyone is watching the radar like a hawk.
:30:13. > :30:16.Presumably that suits you, a little change in the air and the
:30:17. > :30:19.opportunity perhaps to put one over Mercedes, because often it's about
:30:20. > :30:23.how operationally you handle a session like that being out on the
:30:24. > :30:26.right tyre at the right time? It's always an opportunity to shine. It's
:30:27. > :30:32.always an opportunity to look stupid, as well. So, I mean it's a
:30:33. > :30:36.level of conditions like -- it's a leveller, conditions like this. From
:30:37. > :30:40.an operational peck perspective you want it to be fully wet or dry. When
:30:41. > :30:48.it's like it is at the moment, you are in the lap of the gods a bit.
:30:49. > :30:52.Yesterday it appeared you were competitive on the harder tyre. On
:30:53. > :30:59.the medium tyre you didn't seem to get the performance you expect it.
:31:00. > :31:02.Did you find a solution? We had a good look. Daniel managed to split
:31:03. > :31:06.the Mercedes yesterday which was an impressive lap time but didn't go
:31:07. > :31:10.quicker on the softer tyre and I think we were out of balance on that
:31:11. > :31:19.softer tyre. Having had a chance to look at the numbers, Sebastien's run
:31:20. > :31:24.was actually competitive. How competitive do you feel you would be
:31:25. > :31:30.in a straight fight with Mercedes? I think we would probably get within
:31:31. > :31:34.three tenths. The gap was a second at the beginning of the year and if
:31:35. > :31:40.we get everything right, we can be within two or three tenths and we
:31:41. > :31:43.are noting ever closer. It looks as though Toro Rosso were fairly strong
:31:44. > :31:47.yesterday, presumably you were keeping an eye on that? They are
:31:48. > :31:54.doing a great job, we are impressed with Kvyat and Jean-Eric is doing a
:31:55. > :32:03.great job. A few reliability issues that they are focused on. But to
:32:04. > :32:09.their place looks encouraging. -- their place looks.
:32:10. > :32:18.On the electoral gremlins behind you? -- are the electrical gremlins?
:32:19. > :32:22.I hope so, you would have to ask Renault people. He has the same
:32:23. > :32:29.mechanics and the same people working on his car over the last 48
:32:30. > :32:33.Grand Prix is but unfortunately things have not gone his way. Thank
:32:34. > :32:38.you for joining us, best of luck with the rest of today.
:32:39. > :32:44.We are riding with Daniel Ricciardo as we head down the straight. We can
:32:45. > :32:50.see what gears he is using, whether he is on the throttle or breaks, how
:32:51. > :32:56.are things looking? He is using a wide line to try to cut back, maybe
:32:57. > :32:59.not idea to use the kerb. So he gets a straight acceleration and equal
:33:00. > :33:06.loading as he accelerates down across the start finish line. Up to
:33:07. > :33:09.Copse, adverse camber, you wait until the understeer sorts itself
:33:10. > :33:14.out and then start to squeeze on the throttle. Now up through Becketts.
:33:15. > :33:19.Normally this first part is flat and you line it up, using more road on
:33:20. > :33:23.the left than normally in the dry conditions. The grip just isn't
:33:24. > :33:28.there and you have got to let the cargo to wear the grip is and
:33:29. > :33:32.accelerates to Hangar Straight. We have seen a lot of cars go into the
:33:33. > :33:38.right-hand side wall by accelerating, but not today. We are
:33:39. > :33:43.seeing a lot more break action. A wide line, staying off the slippery
:33:44. > :33:50.bit. The guide sort of goes to where the grip is. There are certain
:33:51. > :33:53.corners -- the car sort of goes to. There are certain corners where you
:33:54. > :33:57.have to square it off and keep to the apex but there are faster ones
:33:58. > :34:05.where you let it run out and you find the line. Daniel Ricciardo's
:34:06. > :34:17.time, I think it is repetitive for these conditions. It is the fastest
:34:18. > :34:23.one so far -- representative for these conditions. He was struggling
:34:24. > :34:27.with the balance of his car yesterday although the team felt
:34:28. > :34:31.they made a few improvements. That was the on-board view, which looked
:34:32. > :34:40.fairly heroic. Speeds, just building up and not really getting the grip
:34:41. > :34:49.he needs. Ricciardo is fastest, Magnus is third, Maldonado is
:34:50. > :34:52.fourth. -- Magnussen is third. Just ten drivers have established a lap
:34:53. > :34:59.time in this session so far. Just over half an hour to go. On track
:35:00. > :35:07.these Kimi Raikkonen, Alonso is not on track. He is sitting in the pits
:35:08. > :35:12.at this stage. Ferrari wanted to get more of an idea with Raikkonen's
:35:13. > :35:16.car, having found a problem after yesterday. They want to get laps
:35:17. > :35:23.under his belt and make sure things are ready for qualifying. He locks
:35:24. > :35:26.up the right front as he comes into the left-hander and that puts him
:35:27. > :35:33.out of line. Oversteer as he tries to put the power down, old-fashioned
:35:34. > :35:39.oversteer. He is fifth fastest. Let's get back to the pits. I am at
:35:40. > :35:46.the Morrissey garage and problems for you already -- Marussia garage.
:35:47. > :35:51.We have had a bit of a gearbox issue which has made us have to abort the
:35:52. > :35:56.session early. It is a proper failure we have to change the box.
:35:57. > :36:01.It is annoying, we have a five place grid penalty for the race. I was
:36:02. > :36:05.quite quickly last year in the rain. It is frustrating I am missing out
:36:06. > :36:11.on this running. How hard is it to sit in your garage and watch the
:36:12. > :36:15.cars streamed past? It is frustrating but the best thing you
:36:16. > :36:20.can do is take in as much as you can and learn from it, so you are fully
:36:21. > :36:24.prepared for qualifying. It still might be dry for qualifying. We will
:36:25. > :36:29.wait and see and try our best later on. Five place grid penalty not what
:36:30. > :36:40.you wanted, can you challenge this weekend? Can you beat those within
:36:41. > :36:45.touching distance? We have the advantage over the Caterhams, Sauber
:36:46. > :36:53.is a bit out of reach at the moment. But if it stays wet and they don't
:36:54. > :36:56.get things right, we might be there. Right in the background, someone has
:36:57. > :37:07.gone skidding past the grandstand, who is doing doughnuts?
:37:08. > :37:12.He gave the crowd something to cheer about, we might get another look at
:37:13. > :37:16.it. Second fastest, Romain Grosjean, that was the lap when he spun across
:37:17. > :37:20.the line. He gave it a bit too much through the last corner that he
:37:21. > :37:27.hasn't hit anything. A chance to see what he did. Coming through the last
:37:28. > :37:33.part comedy loses it, a bit wide, as soon as he gets onto the rear wheels
:37:34. > :37:39.and the kerb, it spins three quarters. He is lucky that he did
:37:40. > :37:48.not knows into the wall but recovered reasonably well. How hard
:37:49. > :37:53.is it, when you lose control around the corner? What do you have to do
:37:54. > :37:59.to keep control and not lose the entire car? You have to react as
:38:00. > :38:03.fast as you can. Sometimes it is so quick that you can't catch it. Think
:38:04. > :38:08.that was Grosjean, you know it is not going to be a big one but it
:38:09. > :38:11.could be frustrating when you take the nose. You have to time it well
:38:12. > :38:20.and get front end grip to turn it around, and he did that perfectly. A
:38:21. > :38:26.final work for the British fans, give them a bit of a wave. -- final
:38:27. > :38:30.word. They are waving back. Is it lovely to have the British fans
:38:31. > :38:36.supporting you? It is awesome foot of it was like this in free practice
:38:37. > :38:39.one last year. They were there in high spirits, doing the Mexican
:38:40. > :38:47.waves and flying the union Jacks. It is brilliant to be back every year.
:38:48. > :38:51.I think I spotted his brother, Tom Chilton, in the back of the garage.
:38:52. > :38:56.Both brothers racing effectively around the world in their different
:38:57. > :39:00.categories. Sebastian Vettel showing us how slippery it is as he comes
:39:01. > :39:06.down the Wellington Straight, that was out of Aintree and now into
:39:07. > :39:10.Brooklands. He may be using a different line to the conventional
:39:11. > :39:17.line. He stays out wide for a bit longer. He comes back with straight
:39:18. > :39:23.acceleration to try to maximise the straight lengths. He is an wide open
:39:24. > :39:28.throttle. With the snap oversteer, I am sure he is happy that he has got
:39:29. > :39:38.very fast hands to react to it. It was a quick snap. He came off the
:39:39. > :39:41.throttle to get back into line. His team-mate is fastest in this
:39:42. > :39:43.session, I wonder it Sebastian Vettel will be in the ballpark as
:39:44. > :39:49.well. The pressure coming from the other side of the garage this year
:39:50. > :39:54.consistently. He is fractionally up on the split times. As we look
:39:55. > :40:02.through the gloom towards Stowe corner. Coming in wide there. That
:40:03. > :40:07.was the kerb and the green on the other side is Astroturf. When Felipe
:40:08. > :40:15.Massa put two wheels onto that, he turned right into the wall. It is
:40:16. > :40:26.very tricky out of the last section. We saw Grosjean half spin. Vettel
:40:27. > :40:35.goes a tenth quicker than Ricciardo. Very evenly matched as ever. That
:40:36. > :40:42.duel will continue. RADIO: Just exercise caution, the
:40:43. > :40:46.painted green surface is slipping. With Grosjean having found that out,
:40:47. > :40:53.the message is being passed to the other teams. Six cars are out on
:40:54. > :40:58.circuit. That message to Lewis Hamilton, as he comes out of the
:40:59. > :41:06.track and into The Loop. Alonso is coming back. A lot of teams have
:41:07. > :41:09.been doing practice starts. Some of the background work is not the
:41:10. > :41:13.sister making the car go faster but making the race go quicker -- not
:41:14. > :41:22.necessarily making the race go quicker. It is hard for the teams to
:41:23. > :41:31.plan anything with the change in conditions. They can't really change
:41:32. > :41:35.it, once it starts qualifying. There is not much difference between a wet
:41:36. > :41:41.and dry set up in reality. You go with a dry set up unless you have a
:41:42. > :41:46.major problem. I would say 99% of the cars will be the same for wet
:41:47. > :41:52.and dry. It will be the systems, the way the hybrid recuperates energy.
:41:53. > :41:58.You have significantly less lateral grip in the wet compare to the
:41:59. > :42:05.drive. It is more a case of the tuning aspect -- compared to the
:42:06. > :42:08.dry. Lewis Hamilton is quick on the sector times, up half a second on
:42:09. > :42:15.what we have seen so far from Vettel and Ricciardo. He has just gone off,
:42:16. > :42:19.actually. That wasn't in the plan! He was trying to go for the wide
:42:20. > :42:24.line into Stowe but he ran out of space. Nico Rosberg learning from
:42:25. > :42:30.that, I am sure. Tom, you are at Mercedes? I am, looking at Ross
:42:31. > :42:36.Perot, wondering what he was saying their foot appears been out of the
:42:37. > :42:42.car for a while -- looking at Rosberg. They have
:42:43. > :42:54.car for a while -- looking at more padding, probably to help
:42:55. > :43:02.protect him through the lateral G affected on him. He did only 14 laps
:43:03. > :43:08.yesterday afternoon, Lewis Hamilton, to Nico Rosberg's 35. It is a case
:43:09. > :43:13.of trying to catch up as much as possible and that sums up the
:43:14. > :43:17.championship. Rosberg is now walking over to Lewis's side of the garage
:43:18. > :43:20.and looking at the front left wheel, saying nothing to his
:43:21. > :43:26.team-mate, not even looking at his team-mate. Looking at the front left
:43:27. > :43:29.tyre. A raise of the eyebrows to one of the mechanics. And Rosberg is
:43:30. > :43:36.heading back to his car. Trying to learn everything the whole time.
:43:37. > :43:39.Part of that is psychological in terms of not looking at his
:43:40. > :43:43.team-mate, a big part of it is just looking at the left front, it is a
:43:44. > :43:47.right-handed dominated circuit, there are a lot of long
:43:48. > :43:54.right-handers. The left front tyre gets a hard time in the wet. He will
:43:55. > :44:02.be able to see if it has got where, -- wear and tear. Then he will be
:44:03. > :44:07.able to understand if it is the right tyre, a little bit more, and
:44:08. > :44:13.what it might be like in the race or even qualifying. 16 cars have set a
:44:14. > :44:20.time, several have yet to do a flying lap. We are yet to see
:44:21. > :44:24.Bottas, sat patiently in the pits. Massa has not completed a flying
:44:25. > :44:32.lap. We have seen Alonso a couple of times. Rosberg and Hamilton, neither
:44:33. > :44:36.have completed a flying lap. They are at the bottom of the charts,
:44:37. > :44:42.Hamilton having done five laps like that. Now we are getting into the
:44:43. > :44:47.meat of the season, the teams and drivers have only got a limited
:44:48. > :44:52.number of gearboxes and parts of hybrid system, a limited number of
:44:53. > :44:54.internal combustion engines. They don't want to be running for the
:44:55. > :45:00.sake of it, they haven't got capability. With Susie Wolff having
:45:01. > :45:05.an engine failure, because they were stretching the mileage a little bit
:45:06. > :45:10.longer to try to make sure they have mileage in hand, I can see them
:45:11. > :45:17.sitting back and watching as things progress, unless the time is perfect
:45:18. > :45:28.for them to do some running. Just under 20 minutes to go of this
:45:29. > :45:37.session. The cameras seem to have got steamed up, as well. The track
:45:38. > :45:40.is getting more slippery. You can see the rain hitting the camera.
:45:41. > :45:50.Times will be slower than we have seen so far. Gutierrez is on the
:45:51. > :46:05.interimmediate ate. You go for that until there is spray and puddles.
:46:06. > :46:11.The intermediate... Here is the radio. We are missing a lot of time
:46:12. > :46:17.on braking and entry almost everywhere. Definitely later braking
:46:18. > :46:21.everywhere. That's purely confidence of getting the temperature into the
:46:22. > :46:25.brake, into the front tyre to be able to hit the brakes, like into
:46:26. > :46:29.turn three as he was going to that particular corner. You lose a lot of
:46:30. > :46:37.time around here. I am glad to say join us now is Toto Wolff. It's a
:46:38. > :46:41.strange session this morning, a bit flating -- a bit frustrating for
:46:42. > :46:45.Lewis, he is not getting the laps that he missed out on yesterday.
:46:46. > :46:52.It's not perfect with these conditions. But probably does make a
:46:53. > :46:56.lot of sense to run at the moment, you need to save tyres. It's the
:46:57. > :47:00.same for everybody. Obviously Lewis missed out on those crucial laps
:47:01. > :47:04.yesterday. The guys must have sat down with engineers last night and
:47:05. > :47:10.looked through the data that Nico Rosberg was able to give, is Lewis
:47:11. > :47:18.in a reasonable shape going into the weekend based on that knowledge Yes,
:47:19. > :47:22.of course. First of all, I guess he felt confident in the car before and
:47:23. > :47:28.we shared data. So he should be all right. It's Allan here, what do you
:47:29. > :47:31.think your advantage is in comparison to say Red Bull and
:47:32. > :47:38.Ferrari around here, because they look to be closer yesterday than
:47:39. > :47:44.maybe previous races? You can't really judge, Alan. It's early days.
:47:45. > :47:52.Yesterday you don't know what fuel loads cars were running... Sorry to
:47:53. > :47:55.interrupt, Bianchi going through the gravel track. You have your guys not
:47:56. > :48:00.doing many laps and presumably this is one of the reasons because it's
:48:01. > :48:04.easy to get some damage done. Yeah, of course. This can always happen,
:48:05. > :48:08.not a lot of time between session and qualifying. Yeah, this is one of
:48:09. > :48:12.the reasons you are not running a lot. We will look at the replay of
:48:13. > :48:16.what happened. He came in a bit too hot. He hasn't been able to get the
:48:17. > :48:22.car slowed down enough to use the run-off area that Lewis Hamilton did
:48:23. > :48:26.a couple of laps ago. And then slid across the gravel track and tapped
:48:27. > :48:29.into the wall. Locked up the right front. That means he can't turn. Has
:48:30. > :48:34.to go straight. Both of them are locked up. At this moment you are
:48:35. > :48:41.hoping you stop before the tyres and he doesn't. Toto, your thoughts
:48:42. > :48:44.going into qualifying, all your teams tend to get the same weather
:48:45. > :48:48.information. I don't know whether you have your own Mercedes scouts to
:48:49. > :48:51.keep an eye on what's going to happen for later today? Well, it
:48:52. > :48:56.would be good to have scouts around the race track but unfortunately we
:48:57. > :49:03.don't. We have all the same weather radar, that was good the past, of -
:49:04. > :49:11.past couple of races, no scouts around us. Best of luck with
:49:12. > :49:17.qualifying. We have seen a replay of Adrian Sutil. That was a fraction
:49:18. > :49:22.before Bianchi. Got the car turned enough through the gravel and was
:49:23. > :49:30.able to escape in front of hardy fans there with their umbrellas up
:49:31. > :49:41.now. Two cars on circuit. Gutierrez and Ricciardo. At this moment as a
:49:42. > :49:45.driver your stomach is - oh, my goodness, I have made a mistake and
:49:46. > :49:51.there's 15 minutes to go before and leading up to qualifying. He missed
:49:52. > :49:53.out on laps yesterday. They had several technical problems on the
:49:54. > :49:57.car yesterday. He was short of laps anyway. That hasn't really
:49:58. > :50:00.benefitted him at all. He is having a tough weekend so far and indeed
:50:01. > :50:05.the team appear to be having a bit of a nightmare with the problems for
:50:06. > :50:10.Max Chiltern, he hasn't been out either. At least he managed to do a
:50:11. > :50:15.decent number of laps, 28 laps in session two yesterday. They got some
:50:16. > :50:18.decent knowledge out of that. The Marshalls are in place quickly
:50:19. > :50:23.trying to get that car out of the way, but Bianchi not looking pleased
:50:24. > :50:28.with himself. A few cars haven't set a lap time, the likes of Massa,
:50:29. > :50:33.Alonso and Hamilton, but Vettel coming back out on track now. Just
:50:34. > :50:39.seeing Toto, there he is at the Mercedes pit wall. He and Paddy, of
:50:40. > :50:44.course, in charge at that team and keeping an eye on the progress and
:50:45. > :50:48.their lead in the constructors' table. We are on board with
:50:49. > :50:52.Ricciardo. Both the Red Bulls on circuit now. They're not too worried
:50:53. > :50:58.about the tyres getting a few more laps on them. They probably stayed
:50:59. > :51:03.on the same set of intermediates. It's wet enough now they'll be able
:51:04. > :51:08.to cool them, control tech tures so the blocks -- temperatures so the
:51:09. > :51:12.blocks won't get too hot and start moving around which gives grip away.
:51:13. > :51:17.For me, coming through turn one, he looked as if he had a tremendous
:51:18. > :51:21.amount of confidence. It wasn't understeering too much. It wasn't
:51:22. > :51:26.oversteering too much. It looked nicely balanced in these tricky
:51:27. > :51:33.conditions. So the Red Bull with plenty of down force and Adrian knew
:51:34. > :51:41.his tricks of the trade in terms of getting as much down force. Talking
:51:42. > :51:48.of straight line speeds, it's the two McLarens at the top of the speed
:51:49. > :51:53.trap at the moment. Just under the 200mph mark, that's on the Hangar
:51:54. > :52:01.Straight, just before they get on the brakes for Stowe corner. The two
:52:02. > :52:08.McLarens well up. Hulkenberg, and of course, Hamilton, as well. This is
:52:09. > :52:17.Daniel Ricciardo now coming through the yellow flag area. Bianchi's car
:52:18. > :52:20.will be out of shot on the left. Look at the amount of spray the back
:52:21. > :52:25.of the car is kicking up now, different to the early part of the
:52:26. > :52:29.session. He brings the car back in. Vettel is still going, I think,
:52:30. > :52:34.despite the mistake he made. The yellow flags have been withdrawn
:52:35. > :52:38.from that sector. They've Bianchi's car out of the way. Alonso in the
:52:39. > :52:42.bothering to get into his Ferrari. Looks chilled at the moment. A long
:52:43. > :52:46.time since we have seen Alonso qualify on the front row of the
:52:47. > :52:50.grid, let alone a pole position. The wet conditions could help him. There
:52:51. > :52:55.is Kevin Magnussen. He had a good race last time in Austria. I think
:52:56. > :52:59.the team was pleased with him. Scored solid points. Button was just
:53:00. > :53:04.outside the points. A bit more of of a difficult weekend for him. This
:53:05. > :53:07.weekend so far McLaren have been showing more promising pace than
:53:08. > :53:12.perhaps we expected. There was the lady that caused such a stir
:53:13. > :53:15.yesterday, Susie Wolff getting an opportunity to go out in the first
:53:16. > :53:20.practice session, but of course it lasted four laps. One of those was a
:53:21. > :53:25.flying lap. So very disappointing but she will be back out in Germany
:53:26. > :53:29.in a couple of weeks' time. This is what I saw in the background when
:53:30. > :53:34.Ricciardo was coming down the strait. A little bit on to the
:53:35. > :53:39.wetter part, the rear snapped out, he straightened it up as opposed to
:53:40. > :53:42.spinning the car. Across and no harm done. Came straight back to the
:53:43. > :53:47.pits. We have got just over 11 minutes to go in this session.
:53:48. > :53:52.Nobody is sitting in that Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen. Both cars sitting
:53:53. > :53:55.quietly in the garages. It's a relatively quiet session. Normally
:53:56. > :53:59.we would be getting to the stage of practice where it goes frantic and
:54:00. > :54:02.they're putting in qualifying simulations. Of course, there's not
:54:03. > :54:06.a lot of point doing that because the track conditions are not helping
:54:07. > :54:09.them, they're probably going to be different to what they will be when
:54:10. > :54:13.they go out in qualifying. They might as well sit around and save
:54:14. > :54:17.the equipment at this stage. Yeah, if we look back at yesterday where
:54:18. > :54:21.they did a lot of the race runs, preparation for that, then certainly
:54:22. > :54:26.the two Mercedes were top dogs. Alonso, you mentioned him, not being
:54:27. > :54:29.on the front row, but he was quick again, he was there, third quickest.
:54:30. > :54:32.In the long run he was extremely consistent all the way through. But
:54:33. > :54:36.the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo, that could be the surprise package.
:54:37. > :54:40.That's the one that's got the potential, if it's dry, to be up
:54:41. > :54:45.there and nipping at the heels of the two Mercedes cars. We have seen
:54:46. > :54:51.that a few times. The only time we didn't see that solidly was last
:54:52. > :54:54.time in Austria, they had a disappointing race weekend Red Bull.
:54:55. > :54:58.The track layout perhaps was the least suited to their car. Not sure
:54:59. > :55:05.if they made the right decisions. They went home and had a long hard
:55:06. > :55:08.think about how that went. They probably had their worst race
:55:09. > :55:14.think about how that went. They weekend of the year in terms of
:55:15. > :55:19.performance so far. Kvyat locking again. Wide and on the full wet, as
:55:20. > :55:24.well. That's the one you would normally expect of that little bit
:55:25. > :55:28.more grip at this point. Another view from the onboard camera here.
:55:29. > :55:33.Nearly made it around and ran out of road. Dealt with it pretty well.
:55:34. > :55:38.It's so greasy around here. If you don't have maximum down force, as in
:55:39. > :55:41.a lot of down force, then you just don't generate the tyre temperatures
:55:42. > :55:44.as you would normally do. You just sort of slip and slide around.
:55:45. > :55:48.Remember, last year we had a lot more down force than this year.
:55:49. > :55:51.Therefore, they're already a little bit more on the back foot before
:55:52. > :56:01.they get out on to the track for that. He did race here last year in
:56:02. > :56:06.GP3. Good to see Force India coming out on track. Hulkenberg and Perez
:56:07. > :56:10.have established a lap time. They're almost identical. Actually a bit of
:56:11. > :56:16.a gap. In terms of lap time Hulkenberg was over a second quicker
:56:17. > :56:23.and Perez earlier in this session. With conditions changing it's hard
:56:24. > :56:29.to read. Going out Sergio Perez on the intermediate tyre. It's the one
:56:30. > :56:33.that's more likely to be used. Back with Kvyat. We have a Russian Grand
:56:34. > :56:38.Prix later this year, first time that Formula One will have gone to
:56:39. > :56:43.Russia. Looking forward to that around the Olympics Park at Sochi.
:56:44. > :56:47.That's going to be a new venue, of course, for Formula One and I am
:56:48. > :56:50.sure Kvyat is going to be very much the centre of attention when we get
:56:51. > :56:56.to that Grand Prix. He takes that big wide line through Stowe corner,
:56:57. > :56:59.keeping off the kerb. Does he stay out for another lap? Looks like he
:57:00. > :57:04.is going to finish the lap. Let's see what the lap time is like.
:57:05. > :57:05.It's going to be slower than when we saw Vettel and Ricciardo out at the
:57:06. > :57:19.best of the session. A nice bit of car control through.
:57:20. > :57:22.Nice progressive, smooth. In slow-motion that's going to be
:57:23. > :57:26.fantastic later on. Good lap time. He is two seconds off the best that
:57:27. > :57:29.we have seen when the track conditions were presumably a little
:57:30. > :57:33.better. Yes, presumably. It's difficult in these situations unless
:57:34. > :57:37.everyone is out at the same time to see what is a true lap time. The
:57:38. > :57:43.rain seems to have stopped a little bit. Certainly it's less than what
:57:44. > :57:47.it was earlier on. Bottas on track now. Likes slippery conditions. We
:57:48. > :57:49.saw that last year when he put in a great qualifying performance in
:57:50. > :57:53.Canada which was out of the blue. This year he is much more
:57:54. > :57:57.consistently qualifying well. He had a frnt row start last time in us a
:57:58. > :58:01.-- front row start last time in Austria. This is not the time to
:58:02. > :58:06.throw the car off the road, though. He comes up it towards the Beckets
:58:07. > :58:09.complex now. The Williams, which has been, if anything a little bit light
:58:10. > :58:14.on rear down force throughout the season, could be tricky in these
:58:15. > :58:21.conditions. I think generally around here they probably won't be as
:58:22. > :58:24.competitive, or not going to be, as in Austria and Canada. Expect their
:58:25. > :58:29.performances to be back up to their previous best when you get to
:58:30. > :58:33.Hockenheim. In these conditions it makes it doubly tricky. He is going
:58:34. > :58:37.to complete the lap. Let's get an idea of the lap time. He has gone
:58:38. > :58:43.wide there. Just hold it is in. This is the slippery last corner where we
:58:44. > :58:46.have seen so much action. He is changing up so early. There is
:58:47. > :58:50.a little piece of something in the middle of the circuit there. He is
:58:51. > :58:58.changing up early going up the gears, short shifting so he doesn't
:58:59. > :59:05.have that extreme power. That was a 10th quicker than Kvyat's lap a
:59:06. > :59:09.moment ago. Somebody's lost a wing flap or board, difficult to say what
:59:10. > :59:16.it is. Hopefully that's not going to cause problems. It's just offline.
:59:17. > :59:25.We have the two Force India cars out there at the minute. Let's see
:59:26. > :59:32.Hulkenberg. Now that was a bizarre twitch. There is little - the road
:59:33. > :59:37.flows away and the road's not porous so the water sits on top. Auz you
:59:38. > :59:40.can see it's wetter and -- as you can see it's wetter. It snapped
:59:41. > :59:44.left. I have seen that quite a few times in the wet where people
:59:45. > :59:48.actually end up in the barrier on the left side. That would increase
:59:49. > :59:55.his heart rate a few beats per minute. It was off the Sauber. It
:59:56. > :00:02.lost something. It was off the left side. Looked like the front of the
:00:03. > :00:12.floor area or something. A strange message on the timing screen,
:00:13. > :00:17.whether it's a warning about debris, I am not sure, a strange message
:00:18. > :00:24.from race control. Felipe Massa continuing around. About eight 10ths
:00:25. > :00:36.slower than his team tem-mate on that last tap -- team-mate on that
:00:37. > :00:44.last lap. Rosberg had to settle for third last
:00:45. > :00:48.time. Lewis Hamilton had the pace to be on pole position. His first run
:00:49. > :00:53.in qualifying he ran wide at turn eight, the downhill adverse, that
:00:54. > :00:57.took his time away. If he had just cruised around that corner he would
:00:58. > :01:06.have had pole position. As it was, he made a mistake there and on the
:01:07. > :01:13.next run and that was 9th. Perez having to lock the right front, ran
:01:14. > :01:16.out of road. The way that Silverstone is designed is you have
:01:17. > :01:23.a lot of these tarmac run-off areas before the gravel. In the old days,
:01:24. > :01:27.thinking back to the 1970s, he only needed to run out of road slightly
:01:28. > :01:34.and you were into all sorts of trouble. Here, he was able to get
:01:35. > :01:39.away with it. I wasn't around in the 70s, I don't remember catch fencing!
:01:40. > :01:44.It was gravel traps in my day. Now you have the get out of jail free
:01:45. > :01:45.cards. From a safety point of view, you don't have cars
:01:46. > :01:51.cards. From a safety point of view, over the place. Now the cars are
:01:52. > :01:54.significantly faster in the corners than 25 years ago. Straight line
:01:55. > :01:56.speeds haven't increased too much what the cornering has a significant
:01:57. > :02:15.amount. -- but the cornering has. He is talking about the gear shift,
:02:16. > :02:20.when he is changing up he feels a hit, there is a change in the
:02:21. > :02:24.acceleration, it is not smooth. When you are changing up while the car is
:02:25. > :02:29.laterally loaded, coming out of long corners, it was shifting up when it
:02:30. > :02:38.was loaded. If it has a change in feel, it can create snap oversteer.
:02:39. > :02:43.We have seen some wet races over the years. Lewis Hamilton's victory in
:02:44. > :02:48.2008 was a wet race and he was incredibly impressive. He was chased
:02:49. > :02:54.by Kimi Raikkonen for some of that race. I don't think Lewis Hamilton
:02:55. > :02:56.will worry too much about the rain. Still a couple of seconds slower
:02:57. > :03:05.than some of the others we have seen. Adrian Sutil was slow on his
:03:06. > :03:11.last lap. I think the wettest Grand Prix at Silverstone was 1975. Some
:03:12. > :03:16.seven leaders, a cloudburst on the 56th lap and cars going off
:03:17. > :03:19.everywhere. There was an eight car pile-up at Club Corner and there
:03:20. > :03:26.were only five cars at the finish. We don't want a repeat of that. That
:03:27. > :03:30.was a win for Emerson Fittipaldi. We see the slow motion of Sutil, it was
:03:31. > :03:42.the vertical plane of his barge board that came off.
:03:43. > :03:47.The Saubers doing a few lap, perhaps they think the conditions are going
:03:48. > :03:54.to be similar and they need to get their drivers dialled in more than
:03:55. > :03:57.the others. They also have the situation that they are fighting to
:03:58. > :04:02.get out of the first part of qualifying. So tyre allocation is
:04:03. > :04:07.not a major factor because they will not get into Q3. If they can get
:04:08. > :04:12.into Q2, it will be a bonus. They have had a tough time and I have
:04:13. > :04:19.been under threat from the likes of Marussia on a couple of occasions.
:04:20. > :04:23.Sauber probably have a bit in hand, as Max Chilton told us, but in these
:04:24. > :04:29.conditions you have to look for every bit of margin. Sutil runs very
:04:30. > :04:33.wide out of the last corner. He is promoted up to fifth place. If that
:04:34. > :04:39.had been qualifying, you would have lost the time. All four over the
:04:40. > :04:43.white line which would mean it would be taken away straight away. He
:04:44. > :04:51.wouldn't have been able to keep the fifth position. You push the
:04:52. > :04:55.boundaries in the last part of the free practice, you see what you can
:04:56. > :05:00.get away with in case it is your one lap and you know what you can or
:05:01. > :05:05.cannot do. The green section showing us how slippery it was. He went
:05:06. > :05:09.beyond it to get some traction. He was very wide in the corner, he
:05:10. > :05:16.missed apex completely. I am not sure if that was by design or if he
:05:17. > :05:19.did not turn in early enough. Here is a view of his team-mate,
:05:20. > :05:25.Gutierrez. That is what happens when you get on the kerb. The car just
:05:26. > :05:29.snaps and they were fortunate they didn't have a big snap and turn a
:05:30. > :05:35.hard left into the barrier. David Coulthard raised his eyes sat
:05:36. > :05:40.alongside me. Everybody who has been in that situation, you know you are
:05:41. > :05:44.starting to worry a bit. The chequered flag is out on this
:05:45. > :05:49.session, it has come to an end. Sutil still putting in the laps. He
:05:50. > :05:54.has improved on his first sector. Sauber have probably done more lap
:05:55. > :05:58.than anybody, Toro Rosso as well. Kvyat has done 15 in this session. I
:05:59. > :06:03.wonder if that will give them an opportunity, if the situations are
:06:04. > :06:10.similar in qualifying. For Daniil Kvyat, less experience than most,
:06:11. > :06:16.never driven a Formula One car at Silverstone, useful mileage for him.
:06:17. > :06:27.Let's see this last corner. We'll Sutil changes technique? -- will
:06:28. > :06:33.Sutil? He kept the two wheels on the circuit but it was a wider line, it
:06:34. > :06:38.seems to work more for him. Slightly slower on that lap, half a second
:06:39. > :06:43.slower than his previous lap. He was all four wheels off by about four
:06:44. > :06:48.metres on the previous laps so carried probably ten, it is per hour
:06:49. > :06:55.quicker through the corner. -- ten kilometres per hour through the
:06:56. > :07:02.corner. Vettel, for the first time, I think, in 2014, he has headed a
:07:03. > :07:05.session. I don't think he has been fastest in any single session. It
:07:06. > :07:10.doesn't mean much because it has been a wet session, a lot of cars
:07:11. > :07:14.haven't even bothered to do a lap including Rosberg and Hamilton, the
:07:15. > :07:19.two favourites. It is nice for Vettel that he has topped the times
:07:20. > :07:24.at last. Better than Ricciardo being quicker than him. But it doesn't
:07:25. > :07:29.really mean anything. A lot of this is just getting a feel for what the
:07:30. > :07:33.circuit is like, what the tyres are like. Something that stood out for
:07:34. > :07:38.me is that the intermediate or the full wet didn't seem to have a lot
:07:39. > :07:46.of grip and the circuit is slippery and greasy and not giving feedback
:07:47. > :07:49.to the drivers. We are still 18 seconds away from a dry weather
:07:50. > :07:57.time, indicating how slippery it was. The Lotus cars of Maldonado and
:07:58. > :08:02.Grosjean did well, bearing in mind they lapped pretty quickly. Not far
:08:03. > :08:06.off the Red Bull pace. Maldonado a bit quicker than Grosjean. Sutil
:08:07. > :08:09.with a lap towards the end but it would have been a lap he would have
:08:10. > :08:12.lost because he was all four wheels over. Kvyat did more lap than
:08:13. > :08:51.anybody else. Bianchi went off in the Marussia,
:08:52. > :08:54.they have got to get the car back, didn't look like there was too much
:08:55. > :08:59.damage. Chilton had a gearbox problem, Alonso did not complete a
:09:00. > :09:03.lap, nor Nico Rosberg or Lewis Hamilton. A shame for the local fans
:09:04. > :09:07.that they didn't get a chance to see more of Lewis Hamilton in action,
:09:08. > :09:11.but they will when it comes to qualifying. Looking back at some of
:09:12. > :09:17.the build-up towards that session, this was before the rain came down.
:09:18. > :09:21.Lewis Hamilton was getting ready and there were plenty of smiles in the
:09:22. > :09:26.Mercedes pit garage. Nico Rosberg thought he would be out more than he
:09:27. > :09:30.was. Jenson Button with his crash helmet, very distinctive, that is
:09:31. > :09:35.what he is using this weekend. Nico Hulkenberg also getting ready. The
:09:36. > :09:41.Red Bulls have ended up on top in this session. Let's get down to the
:09:42. > :09:48.pits and get some reaction from the Williams team. Good old English
:09:49. > :09:54.summer letting us down again. Yeah, really difficult this morning. The
:09:55. > :09:57.amount of rainfall was just about equal to the amount of water that
:09:58. > :10:04.the cars were clearing off the track. Lap times were sitting 117%
:10:05. > :10:10.of the dry time which is right on the point where you switch from a
:10:11. > :10:13.full wet tyre to an intermediate. It was really difficult to be able to
:10:14. > :10:21.learn anything. We did a couple of laps to check tyre pressures and
:10:22. > :10:26.break warming devices -- brake warming devices. Make sure the
:10:27. > :10:32.engine is giving what we want. Probably confuse ourselves a little
:10:33. > :10:35.bit. Continuing the rain and allergy, it was raining bad luck on
:10:36. > :10:42.you yesterday. A big shout to the mechanics had a very busy day. They
:10:43. > :10:47.did, they really performed well. There was a lot of damage on
:10:48. > :10:57.Felipe's cap and to get it out was a real credit. -- Felipe's car. How
:10:58. > :11:00.will the lack of running help you? I guess today, everyone is in the same
:11:01. > :11:05.boat, none of us have learned what we would like to learn on a Saturday
:11:06. > :11:14.morning, it is our final fine tuning for qualifying. Yesterday we lost
:11:15. > :11:18.most of our time in P1 which really doesn't affect us quite so much. It
:11:19. > :11:24.puts us a big back on the development for future races -- a
:11:25. > :11:31.bit back. We did get tyre work done in P2 and that is the important
:11:32. > :11:35.thing. Good luck this afternoon. Allan McNish has hotfooted it from
:11:36. > :11:39.the commentary box. Not the most exciting of sessions but the first
:11:40. > :11:42.time Sebastian Vettel has topped a time sheet. A lot of people in a lot
:11:43. > :11:47.of trouble, Romain Grosjean gave the crowd something to cheer about at
:11:48. > :11:51.least. He came into the last corner, it is very greasy, and adverse
:11:52. > :11:55.camber. As soon as he got one wheel on the kerb and one on the green it
:11:56. > :11:59.snapped sideways. He pulled the clutch and he was already going down
:12:00. > :12:04.the gears as soon as he was heading to the pit wall. No harm in reality
:12:05. > :12:08.but it was very close to tagging the pit wall with the right front of his
:12:09. > :12:13.wing. We are relieved he did not because there is not a lot of time
:12:14. > :12:17.between now and qualifying. You can see that it snapped and at this
:12:18. > :12:24.moment in time he has a ready gone from third to second and then into
:12:25. > :12:32.first. -- already gone. A lot of rain on the camera lens there.
:12:33. > :12:35.Hamilton runs wide, he is able to use his run-off area, comes back
:12:36. > :12:41.onto the circuit and go straight into the pit lane. Not a good day
:12:42. > :12:47.for Marussia, Jules Bianchi getting locked up and hitting the wall, Max
:12:48. > :12:52.Chilton with a gearbox problem. It will probably just be a front wing
:12:53. > :12:57.but they have to take the floor off and make sure the gravel hasn't gone
:12:58. > :13:02.anywhere else. Before qualifying that is the last thing you need.
:13:03. > :13:07.Sebastian Vettel topped the timesheets but he also went off a
:13:08. > :13:11.bit. No damage done. On the intermediate tyre, he lost the rear
:13:12. > :13:15.and aborted the corner very early. He decided it was better and safer
:13:16. > :13:20.to go straight across the grass and try to save something and go into
:13:21. > :13:27.the gravel or the tyre wall. -- than try to save something. Any clues
:13:28. > :13:30.about who will be quicker? Not at all. The weather will determine a
:13:31. > :13:35.tremendous amount. The Red Bulls were fast, they will be in the mix,
:13:36. > :13:38.I would expect Mercedes to be fast as well because Rosberg was
:13:39. > :13:41.blindingly quick in his first sector and they will always be quick.
:13:42. > :13:46.Tricky conditions, there will be a lot of mistakes if it is like this
:13:47. > :13:51.in qualifying. Last year Lewis Hamilton was five tenths of a
:13:52. > :13:57.second, as he told me. You have about 45 minutes to do what you
:13:58. > :13:59.want. We are back at 11:55am on BBC Two. We have plenty to entertain you
:14:00. > :14:04.with. Goodbye for now.
