:01:05. > :01:13.Hello and welcome to the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal. It is

:01:14. > :01:16.an old one but a good one. The drivers love coming here. It takes

:01:17. > :01:24.real combination of respect and aggression. What makes it so tough?

:01:25. > :01:28.It is an old-style circuit, walls all the way around, if you go to the

:01:29. > :01:33.last chicane where they really have to jump over the kerbs, if you make

:01:34. > :01:36.it slightly wrong, go into quickly, hit the left-hand curbs too hard,

:01:37. > :01:39.you are in the wall of champions on the out side. It doesn't allow any

:01:40. > :01:44.margin for error. Somebody who has tended his Lewis

:01:45. > :01:48.Hamilton. He has always finished on the podium apart from once and he

:01:49. > :01:53.has won three times, he has got the space nails.

:01:54. > :01:57.I think it really suits his driving style. He gets the car into the

:01:58. > :02:05.corner, turns it quickly, pivots and gets back out and with such short

:02:06. > :02:09.corners it suits him. It is like a karting style. He feels at home

:02:10. > :02:13.here. He needs to. Nico Rosberg is just a little bit ahead of him in

:02:14. > :02:15.the championship after winning in Monte Carlo and he needs to reverse

:02:16. > :02:18.that trend to get the momentum back in his favour.

:02:19. > :02:25.It seems like that battle between those two drivers might have

:02:26. > :02:27.quietened down. It is such a big rivalry, can there be friends and

:02:28. > :02:31.rivals? I think they can be friends, but

:02:32. > :02:36.probably after the finish of the season. It is rivalry at the moment.

:02:37. > :02:40.It has calmed down publicly but inside the heart and stomach and

:02:41. > :02:43.their minds, it is very clear it is exactly as it was before, because

:02:44. > :02:46.one of those two will more than likely win this weekend and more

:02:47. > :02:49.than likely win the World Championships at the end of the year

:02:50. > :02:54.for stoppages the public side of things they are smiling a bit more.

:02:55. > :02:59.Nico Rosberg heads the Drivers' Championship four points ahead of

:03:00. > :03:00.his team-mate and friend, for now, Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso has

:03:01. > :03:14.half the points of Mercedes have a huge lead in the

:03:15. > :03:18.Constructors' Championship. Red Bull is second with Ferrari haven't won a

:03:19. > :03:23.race since the Spanish Grand Prix. Look at the bottom. Marussia, two

:03:24. > :03:31.points in Monaco, they are ahead not just of Caterham, but also Sauber.

:03:32. > :03:35.We have Ben Edwards and Tony Duggins. A lot of new parts coming

:03:36. > :03:43.here for top that brings new hopes. It will be busy.

:03:44. > :03:48.A lot of those parts need to be tested and see if they work.

:03:49. > :03:54.We are opposite one of the key corners, the final turn and the wall

:03:55. > :03:58.of champions. There has been a lot of champions in

:03:59. > :04:05.there, so named because in 99 game in her, Michael Schumacher, Jacques

:04:06. > :04:10.Villeneuve, all went in there. That is what we are hoping to see,

:04:11. > :04:13.not hoping to see, any crashes, but through fractures and indeed during

:04:14. > :04:16.the race it is or was a place to watch.

:04:17. > :04:24.You can get involved using social media. We will try and read out as

:04:25. > :04:28.many messages as possible. You can go to the BBC Sport Facebook page

:04:29. > :04:31.and you will see a stunning skyline out of Montreal. We are on that

:04:32. > :04:35.little island in the middle. You will go out on track this morning

:04:36. > :04:38.and have a look and see what you can find.

:04:39. > :04:41.I will go into the pit lane, it is quite an exciting moment in terms of

:04:42. > :04:44.seeing what people have got, what they have hopefully got in terms of

:04:45. > :04:51.performance, and then having that trip out on the circuit. I will go

:04:52. > :04:53.down to the last chicane to see how they are jumping against the kerbs.

:04:54. > :04:56.You can get right up next to the barrier.

:04:57. > :05:02.We will leave you in the capable hands of Ben and Tony.

:05:03. > :05:06.We are getting all set for this first practice session, 90 minutes

:05:07. > :05:09.of action, hopefully. An extra set of tyres to use in the first session

:05:10. > :05:13.and hopefully things will give them a chance to take a break for a

:05:14. > :05:19.moment and see whether it gets more effective. The green light coming on

:05:20. > :05:23.the end of the pit lane. The first out on circuit here for free

:05:24. > :05:30.practice in Canada. It looks like it will be a Williams first out.

:05:31. > :05:37.Felipe Massa comes out. They will be hoping they can get a decent

:05:38. > :05:40.performance out of the car this weekend. McLaren with their Mercedes

:05:41. > :05:45.engine power hoping they will be able to do something a little better

:05:46. > :05:49.than we have seen in recent races. Jenson Button managing to score some

:05:50. > :05:56.half decent points last time out in Monaco. A difficult time for McLaren

:05:57. > :05:59.in recent events. Fifth gate, Cruise two. Out of

:06:00. > :06:15.1010. At ERS check. Nico Rosberg being given some

:06:16. > :06:20.instructions before heading out. Mercedes expected to dominate once

:06:21. > :06:24.again. What about the chances of some of their rival teams? We have

:06:25. > :06:28.to wait and see. Red Bull feeling this will be a tougher call with the

:06:29. > :06:33.Renault engine power not having that straight-line speed that will be

:06:34. > :06:38.needed. Ferrari bringing a lot of updates. They are hopeful that both

:06:39. > :06:41.beneath the engine cover and a few bits on the car, it will improve

:06:42. > :06:47.their performance. A lot of people are looking at this

:06:48. > :06:52.race as a Mercedes bonanza. You have got all the straits, the power,

:06:53. > :06:54.their advantage, you have got the Renault and the Ferrari that have

:06:55. > :07:00.been struggling in that area. People are coming here thinking this will

:07:01. > :07:03.be a Mercedes special event. But you have got Daniel Ricciardo, saying it

:07:04. > :07:10.is a drivers track, there are places you can let things hang out. He is

:07:11. > :07:15.hopeful it is not to be as big a disaster as some are predicting.

:07:16. > :07:29.Felipe Massa, Bianchi out on circuit. Kimi Raikonnen. Quite a few

:07:30. > :07:33.cars on track at the moment. Maldonado just gone out, a few

:07:34. > :07:37.waiting to come out, Rosberg, Hulkenberg, Hamilton, pot ash. There

:07:38. > :07:43.is the view back out towards the city of Montreal. It is one of the

:07:44. > :07:50.most popular venues. A brilliant setting. Parkland on an island in

:07:51. > :07:53.the middle of the St Lawrence River, Montreal city as a backdrop. There

:07:54. > :08:02.is Kimi Raikonnen, he gets a little bit out of shape. That is part and

:08:03. > :08:05.parcel of making a car working ever stop he is getting the car stable

:08:06. > :08:09.underbraking, getting the power out of the corners.

:08:10. > :08:15.That is an area he has struggled with, locking, competitive Fernando

:08:16. > :08:19.Alonso has been losing more time in that area and he is hoping he will

:08:20. > :08:24.get that sorted. An ongoing process. That yellow colouring you are seeing

:08:25. > :08:26.on the back wing is the special paint they apply to the cars, you

:08:27. > :08:31.often see that in first practice, they can get an idea of the airflow

:08:32. > :08:35.around some of the new parts, quite possibly we know that they have gone

:08:36. > :08:38.for a lot of engine work this weekend, we gather there is a new

:08:39. > :08:42.floor on the Ferrari, other error parts that will be tested. Whether

:08:43. > :08:46.they will be run over the course of the weekend will depend on whether

:08:47. > :08:50.they perform as they are expected. Kimi Raikonnen brings the Ferrari

:08:51. > :08:55.back into the pits. It has been a bit of a difficult return to Ferrari

:08:56. > :08:59.for Kimi Raikonnen. Lacking points compared to his team-mate, looking

:09:00. > :09:03.result as well, the best of seventh place in the races we have seen so

:09:04. > :09:07.far. He was heading for a third-place finish in Monaco, but

:09:08. > :09:12.unfortunate contact with Max Chilton during the safety car period when he

:09:13. > :09:14.was trying to get himself out of the way of the leaders, and

:09:15. > :09:17.unfortunately a bit of contact was made and it damaged both their

:09:18. > :09:20.races. It did. I was talking to him about

:09:21. > :09:26.that yesterday. It was a case of knowing when to go by, and he had

:09:27. > :09:30.instructions it was fine to do that, so he looked to do that between the

:09:31. > :09:40.exit and said Kimi Raikonnen wasn't paying attention. He was sorry, said

:09:41. > :09:45.he would do the same thing again. The stewards looked at it and said

:09:46. > :09:50.it was a racing incident, no blame apportioned at all. Max Chilton very

:09:51. > :09:56.disappointed. Bianchi went on to score the first ever points for

:09:57. > :09:59.Marussia. The normal installation art has been completed, no

:10:00. > :10:04.particular worries for the two team-mates. It is battle be joined

:10:05. > :10:08.once again between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg was what a season

:10:09. > :10:14.we are seeing, of rivalry between these two drivers. That's from my

:10:15. > :10:17.how the season has gone. It started off in Melbourne where Hamilton was

:10:18. > :10:20.on pole position but an early retirement was not the only novelist

:10:21. > :10:28.Mercedes have had was that Hamilton retirement in a went on to win. Who

:10:29. > :10:32.we are looking at Kevin Magnussen. First time he has been to this

:10:33. > :10:36.Canadian Grand Prix circuit. Malaysia was the next round,

:10:37. > :10:40.Hamilton took pole position, Rosberg qualified third, both of those

:10:41. > :10:43.initial qualifying sessions were in the damp, Hamilton went on to win,

:10:44. > :10:47.was but lost time on the first lap then had to battle to make sure he

:10:48. > :10:50.was second. Red Bull, Daniel Riccardo, he study of the season

:10:51. > :10:55.very well, he had a podium in a stranger taken away from him through

:10:56. > :10:59.illegal fuel use but it was a marginal thing that probably didn't

:11:00. > :11:02.affect the actual performance of the car that much. We have seen some

:11:03. > :11:06.great performances from him since then.

:11:07. > :11:09.He has been fabulous. The team were saying yesterday when they took him

:11:10. > :11:13.on they knew he was quick, they didn't know how quick. Christian

:11:14. > :11:17.Horner said if you look at the result he has achieved in the first

:11:18. > :11:22.part of the season you wouldn't have expected that, head of Sebastian

:11:23. > :11:26.Vettel and the World Championships, they really impressed. I feel sorry

:11:27. > :11:31.for him losing those 18 points from Melbourne, if he had them he would

:11:32. > :11:34.have 72 on the board and if they did a big of progress in the second half

:11:35. > :11:38.of the season he would be in striking distance.

:11:39. > :11:43.An impressive start but could have been even better. He does love this

:11:44. > :11:47.circuit. He is looking forward to competing here. He spoke to Lee

:11:48. > :11:52.yesterday and told her what it takes to be fast here.

:11:53. > :11:59.It is a bit like Monaco, a lot of street circuits. A lot of modern

:12:00. > :12:04.circuits with a lot of run-off, you can break ten metres later, if you

:12:05. > :12:07.miss the corner you go wide and try again the next time or back it off

:12:08. > :12:12.but street circuits, if you break ten metres later, you end up off the

:12:13. > :12:18.track and in a wall, pretty much. You have got to have confidence to

:12:19. > :12:23.hit your mark straightaway. Here there are a lot of curbs, that tends

:12:24. > :12:26.to throw the car around, you have got to be comfortable with the car

:12:27. > :12:33.bouncing. Basically feel like you are in control. There is a bit more

:12:34. > :12:37.going on. The driver can do a bit more, take a bit more risk and get

:12:38. > :12:41.rewarded, where on some of the tracks it is not the case.

:12:42. > :12:46.He is enjoying this circuit. He had a penalty here last year, got into

:12:47. > :12:57.the top ten, but had a minor grid penalty. His best finish, 14. Mark

:12:58. > :13:01.Webber never really had a great run of results here. One podium in ten

:13:02. > :13:09.starts, when he finished third in 2010.. Reason the Australian driver

:13:10. > :13:15.in the Red Bull team doesn't always go well -- for some reason. What is

:13:16. > :13:18.happening outside Mercedes? Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have

:13:19. > :13:22.done their installation laps but as soon as Hamilton's car came in he

:13:23. > :13:27.jumped out, the seat is out, the engine cover is off, and they are

:13:28. > :13:30.looking down the left-hand bank area of the engine. A lot of parts in

:13:31. > :13:35.there, not necessarily purely engine related. Without doubt they have a

:13:36. > :13:41.problem, they are trying to rectify it.

:13:42. > :13:45.Not all smooth sailing. A good crowd turning out, always a fantastic

:13:46. > :13:50.crowd in Canada. The grandstand might not be completely full, it is

:13:51. > :13:54.just coming up to ten past ten local time. The massively enthusiastic

:13:55. > :13:58.audience. It is a hugely popular event in the

:13:59. > :14:04.city. Everybody loves coming here. Yesterday there was talk of a new

:14:05. > :14:08.deal for Montreal for the next ten years, which is expected to be

:14:09. > :14:13.announced later today. Christian Horner was asked, what you think

:14:14. > :14:17.many of the next ten years and he said fine, with a better engine stop

:14:18. > :14:21.straight in there. That is what bread bowl are looking

:14:22. > :14:30.for, a bit more straight-line speed. -- Red Bull. Does not have

:14:31. > :14:35.the performance the Mercedes unit. Great overhead shot over the city.

:14:36. > :14:38.It is just a few miles from the downtown area but not many of the

:14:39. > :14:44.team is staying in hotels in the downtown area. A very easy place to

:14:45. > :14:52.get to. Alan McManus has moved over to the Nico Rosberg side of the

:14:53. > :14:57.Mercedes garage -- McNish. He is still sitting in the car, done

:14:58. > :15:00.some checks. They had a guy underneath with a hand-held phone

:15:01. > :15:06.camera taking pictures of the underneath of the front edge of the

:15:07. > :15:11.floor, where it all bolts on. Just nipped off. It is an ingenious way

:15:12. > :15:15.to do it but very quick and easy. Lewis Hamilton's car on the other

:15:16. > :15:19.side, the cameramen are going nuts around, he is sitting at the back

:15:20. > :15:24.with the helmet still on. It will not be too long. The engine cover

:15:25. > :15:29.has been replaced but they are still in and around about the seat area.

:15:30. > :15:33.It looks as if it will be a shorter time problem as opposed to a long

:15:34. > :15:46.one, the fact he has to put his helmet on. Nico Rosberg, aiming to

:15:47. > :15:55.beat Lewis Hamilton as he did in Monaco. It will not be easy as Lewis

:15:56. > :16:00.Hamilton has an amazing record. We asked what Nico Rosberg has in his

:16:01. > :16:06.armoury to beat Lewis Hamilton? I have loads in my armoury. We will

:16:07. > :16:16.see how it goes. What will it take to be quicker than him around here?

:16:17. > :16:22.What it takes is me to be on top of my game and then it is possible. I

:16:23. > :16:24.have to make I get everything right, the setup right, get the card to my

:16:25. > :16:29.liking. Get faster and faster. Breaking will be important. I have

:16:30. > :16:35.not been 100% happy with the brakes. I will have to try and optimise that

:16:36. > :16:42.and we will be fine. Lewis Hamilton sitting in the back of his garage.

:16:43. > :16:49.Interesting comments about the breaking and that he is not 100%

:16:50. > :16:56.happy with the break? It is key to Lewis Hamilton's success. We were

:16:57. > :17:03.talking about his karting style. He is very late on the brakes and gets

:17:04. > :17:05.the car turned. His record here is phenomenal. Fernando Alonso was

:17:06. > :17:15.nearly half a second off him in qualifying. Heikki Kovalainen in as

:17:16. > :17:22.well. It is all time gained on the brakes with an aggressive approach.

:17:23. > :17:26.He will need soon hit the red Button if he is going to beat Lewis this

:17:27. > :17:34.weekend. Kevin Magnussen is on circuit at a moment. Lee McKenzie,

:17:35. > :17:43.when she caught up with him yesterday, she asked him why he

:17:44. > :17:50.always goes so well here? It is like a street circuit a little bit. I

:17:51. > :17:59.don't know, I don't really have an ancestor you but it seems to click

:18:00. > :18:02.quite well here. In the past I have always been good on the brakes, and

:18:03. > :18:09.it is a circuit all about breaking, so it is a bit like a go-kart track.

:18:10. > :18:11.We spoke to you in molecule and you were talking about your relationship

:18:12. > :18:14.with Nico Rosberg not being in the best place. I be spoken to him? We

:18:15. > :18:17.are good now. I caught up with him after the race and I congratulated

:18:18. > :18:23.him. We had a chat. We have been working with the team to ensure we

:18:24. > :18:30.are cool and we will be working forward. We have been friends for a

:18:31. > :18:34.long time and we have had ups and downs. The last race was down moment

:18:35. > :18:40.for our friendship. If anything, it has made us stronger. We have been

:18:41. > :18:45.in contact recently and had dinner last night with the team, so we are

:18:46. > :18:51.good. Alan has more news from the Mercedes garage? It seems to be much

:18:52. > :18:57.ado about nothing. I asked what the problem was, and they are just doing

:18:58. > :19:04.normal checks. It was a radio thing. The radio is under the seat in the

:19:05. > :19:08.Mercedes so they had to get the seats out to rectify that. It seems

:19:09. > :19:16.it will be in the next five or ten minute they will be back out. Both,

:19:17. > :19:21.it looks Nico Rosberg will be closer than that. Kevin Magnussen continues

:19:22. > :19:26.on his way. His father scored his one point in Formula One when he was

:19:27. > :19:33.striving for the Stuart grand prix team. Kevin Magnussen will want to

:19:34. > :19:41.get into the top ten this weekend. It has good straight line speed, the

:19:42. > :19:47.car. They are confident they can deliver more. Thanks for getting in

:19:48. > :19:50.touch with us on social media. Mike Askin, other than Lewis Hamilton,

:19:51. > :19:57.who else is known to be good around Montreal? You are to say Sebastian

:19:58. > :20:03.Vettel. Three pole positions over the last three years, but only one

:20:04. > :20:08.win. His win last year was the first red wool on this track. The first

:20:09. > :20:13.when on the North American continent last year? He was saying we have

:20:14. > :20:25.been competitive for the last three years. In 2012, Lewis beat him on a

:20:26. > :20:32.different strategy and last year he did win. He said, we are not so bad.

:20:33. > :20:38.He is another driver suited to this place. Sebastian Vettel will be one

:20:39. > :20:46.to watch out for. Let's go down to the pits. Alan? There is a lining

:20:47. > :20:53.here, people trying to do a standing start, to get a feel for it. Once

:20:54. > :20:57.they are in this position they will go through the procedure and

:20:58. > :21:06.accelerates. Look at the dust coming from the back of the McLaren. This

:21:07. > :21:09.circuit is not used very often. That just is all around the circuit so

:21:10. > :21:16.the first few laps will be used as a cleaning up and then it will get

:21:17. > :21:22.faster. Kevin Magnussen is fastest. Everybody else has done and

:21:23. > :21:28.installation lap but not a complete flying lap. Romain Grosjean with the

:21:29. > :21:31.Lotus. They are not coming in with a lot of confidence. They are worried

:21:32. > :21:37.about what the performance of the car will be like. They struggled on

:21:38. > :21:42.slow turns in the final set in Barcelona and also Monaco. Grow Jean

:21:43. > :21:45.Ross talking about it yesterday and saying the late arrival of this car

:21:46. > :21:50.over the winter denied them opportunities to put it on the rate

:21:51. > :21:56.at which does the suspension testing and development work. It has hurt

:21:57. > :22:01.them this year in getting the car to have a good mechanical grip, which

:22:02. > :22:07.basically means how the suspension is working. It all translates to

:22:08. > :22:16.drivability. That is Pastor Maldonado. It all translates into

:22:17. > :22:24.drivability and the driver not being confident and happy with the car. In

:22:25. > :22:28.a place like this, it will hurt you. We will have to wait and see.

:22:29. > :22:37.Another driver who has gone well, Jenson Button, on this circuit. Alan

:22:38. > :22:39.Stewart has written in saying will Button's previous experience with

:22:40. > :22:48.Honda help him keep his seat with McLaren next year? He talked about

:22:49. > :22:52.his future on the five live podcast last night. He is very much one of

:22:53. > :23:00.the senior members of the Formula One fraternity. Has a good record

:23:01. > :23:06.here. Had a brilliant win in 2011, but where is he in his head about

:23:07. > :23:14.next year and staying with McLaren? I get the impression he wants to be

:23:15. > :23:16.part of that will stop he was saying yesterday it is their fifth year

:23:17. > :23:25.together. He has a lot of experience, he is young at heart and

:23:26. > :23:30.is fitter than ever. He wants to be part of that. The racing director at

:23:31. > :23:37.McLaren said he is a great ambassador for the team. His input

:23:38. > :23:42.is important and with a new partner in Honda, I can see Jenson Button

:23:43. > :23:48.staying. That will turn out over this year when people start to talk

:23:49. > :23:51.about movements. Rosenberg re-signed or Mercedes so there will not be any

:23:52. > :23:57.changes in the top team at the moment. It is all about which of the

:23:58. > :24:02.two drivers will come out on top. Kevin Magnussen is fastest from

:24:03. > :24:12.Maldonado, Max Chilton has done a laugh. Rossi is out as well, he is

:24:13. > :24:22.the test and development driver for Caterham in Formula One. That was

:24:23. > :24:28.some interesting noises, some break locking and whistling. Rossi is the

:24:29. > :24:33.only one in terms of development drivers out this morning. All of the

:24:34. > :24:39.regular drivers are in their cars I getting in some mileage. We have

:24:40. > :24:47.just seen Ericsson had a bit of an off at the hairpin. No, it was the

:24:48. > :24:50.last corner. This is a little bit like Monte Carlo in terms of

:24:51. > :24:59.confidence and building as the weekend goes on. It is not the kind

:25:00. > :25:04.of place you would want to miss a session? No, you have to build up to

:25:05. > :25:08.the tiny fractions of centimetres to the walls on some of the exits to

:25:09. > :25:14.these corners. Let's see what Nico Hulkenberg has been doing on-board

:25:15. > :25:21.the Force India. Has been a good season for him. That was a mistake,

:25:22. > :25:24.his wheel went on the grass. So easy to make a little mistake. Perhaps

:25:25. > :25:38.distracted. TEAM RADIO: everything OK, Nico?

:25:39. > :25:48.Just made a mistake. He admitted to his error straightaway. That was

:25:49. > :25:56.Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull, very early to see something like

:25:57. > :26:00.that! That is one of the places he was talking about yesterday. There

:26:01. > :26:02.is the boss at Ferrari, overseeing the improvements they are expect in

:26:03. > :26:06.this weekend. Will it be enough to challenge Mercedes? Frank Williams

:26:07. > :26:16.keeping an eye on Bottas, who is 11 and Felipe Massa, not a great record

:26:17. > :26:21.but is fastest at a moment. He has never actually finished on the

:26:22. > :26:25.podium, his best finish was fourth in 2005 and has never out qualified

:26:26. > :26:29.team-mate here. We were talking how great this track has been per Lewis

:26:30. > :26:34.Hamilton, but it is a track some drivers never quite get hold of

:26:35. > :26:40.Western Mark it is the sort of place if it suits your style you will be

:26:41. > :26:47.quick year after year. If it is not intrinsic to your driving style, it

:26:48. > :26:51.is difficult to progress. Talking to Bottas, he was confident coming in

:26:52. > :26:57.and was hoping it would be potentially a good race for

:26:58. > :27:05.Williams. They have done some mechanical work. He qualified third.

:27:06. > :27:11.Hamilton just going down, after turn one. Overcooked the breaking into

:27:12. > :27:17.the first corner. No problem, carrying straight on. Thermal

:27:18. > :27:22.imaging cameras so you can see the heat from the car up ahead from the

:27:23. > :27:28.exhaust pipe area. We are on-board with Romain Grosjean. Ericsson up

:27:29. > :27:33.ahead of him. Ericsson in the Caterham. He is very much

:27:34. > :27:43.centralised from the exhaust pipe area. Slide therefore Romain

:27:44. > :27:45.Grosjean. Last year, they use the exhaust gas to accelerate air

:27:46. > :27:53.through the lower rear section of the car to get more downforce. Now

:27:54. > :27:58.they are not allowed to do that. A few moments ago, Fernando Alonso

:27:59. > :28:10.left the pit bridge. Something odd happened. Alan, what happened? As he

:28:11. > :28:15.released the crook clutch. It is a paddle. He had to pull it back in

:28:16. > :28:21.and it was a bit of kangaroo jumping and it took him a few attempts

:28:22. > :28:30.before he could get the car moving. Mechanics were not sure if he was

:28:31. > :28:41.going to be able to get it going. Now he is out on the circuit. The

:28:42. > :28:44.setting was off with just 20 millimetres of travel on the clutch

:28:45. > :28:49.paddle. Nico Hulkenberg is second-fastest, Felipe Massa, Jenson

:28:50. > :28:56.Button in fifth. Toro Rosso do have a good record, Verne went well here

:28:57. > :29:00.last year. He is having his best qualifying up to that stage and

:29:01. > :29:06.last year. He is having his best best ever result. Lee McKenzie, you

:29:07. > :29:10.are at Toro Rosso? I am sure they want to repeat that, but number 26

:29:11. > :29:17.car came in and announced. Daniil Kvyat turned up will stop mechanics

:29:18. > :29:24.stood there wondering what was going on. It obviously wasn't planned.

:29:25. > :29:31.They were not expecting him. Either there was a problem with the radio,

:29:32. > :29:35.or there was a problem with the car. Nobody looks overly concerned but it

:29:36. > :29:44.was very strange. Let's see what Lewis Hamilton did. Yes, a little

:29:45. > :29:48.lock on the soft tyre. It is the super soft and soft tyres brought to

:29:49. > :29:58.Montreal, the same as used in Monaco. Hamilton just testing them

:29:59. > :30:03.out. Kevin Magnussen doing likewise. Hamilton still fastest, Rosenberg

:30:04. > :30:08.has gone second quickest now. Virtually matching Hamilton's time.

:30:09. > :30:14.This was on-board with Vettel, coming down to the last chicane and

:30:15. > :30:22.he out of it. Found a little exit to avoid the kerb. Bottas had a bit

:30:23. > :30:26.more of a dramatic line into that corner and locked up the tyre. We

:30:27. > :30:34.will see a lot of this in practice, they will experiment with the

:30:35. > :30:40.limits? We saw Alonso have a slide a moment

:30:41. > :30:46.ago. We are on board with Raikkonen. We had some knocking.

:30:47. > :30:53.That is interesting. Knocking usually refers to ignition with a

:30:54. > :31:00.turbo-charged engine, it is something they are trying

:31:01. > :31:04.desperately not to get. If the data was coming back that they were

:31:05. > :31:07.getting that from the engine, it is one of the quickest ways to destroy

:31:08. > :31:10.the engine so they would have made some adjustments. Good to ride on

:31:11. > :31:16.board with Kimi Raikonnen, gives you a really good view of how hard they

:31:17. > :31:23.are on the brakes, how much curb they can use three some of these

:31:24. > :31:24.chicanes, you can see how difficult it is to get the power down

:31:25. > :31:35.smoothly. Pit lane entry on the left. Decided

:31:36. > :31:46.to come in. That is a shame we didn't get to see him come through

:31:47. > :31:51.the final turn. Kimi Raikonnen definitely having the worst of it at

:31:52. > :31:54.that team at the moment, struggling in terms of pace and having lost a

:31:55. > :31:58.potential third place in Monaco which would have been a confidence

:31:59. > :32:01.booster, he has got to pick himself up and see what he can get this

:32:02. > :32:08.weekend will stop Hamilton, Rosberg, look at the times, they have both

:32:09. > :32:20.gone quicker again. Was both definitely staying in the hunt

:32:21. > :32:23.currently. Hulkenberg is fifth. Ferrari are experimenting with a

:32:24. > :32:34.of field development and back down impact on things like knocking.

:32:35. > :32:36.There also is of areas, with these new turbo-charged engines.

:32:37. > :32:40.A massive amount of weight to be done. The fuel they use is still

:32:41. > :32:45.based on pump fuel. They are not allowed the really exotic blends of

:32:46. > :32:50.fuel that were allowed in the previous turbo era which used to

:32:51. > :32:53.make your eyes sting. I can remember going to take some pictures out of a

:32:54. > :32:58.slow corner and standing there for ten minutes at having tears

:32:59. > :33:03.streaming down my face, it was evil. Within a window of what they are

:33:04. > :33:06.allowed, based on pump fuel, there are opportunities to change things

:33:07. > :33:12.and that is what they are working on so much. Particularly to avoid the

:33:13. > :33:16.pre-ignition, knocking symptoms that turbo-charged engines produce. They

:33:17. > :33:25.are producing some pretty amazing results. Rear tyres graining a bit

:33:26. > :33:33.funny to Hulkenberg. Not a surprise. There is no rubber down. This is not

:33:34. > :33:38.a truck for the rest of the year. It has got to take a while for the

:33:39. > :33:41.tyres to settle in. Watching the on-board camera, the thermal image

:33:42. > :33:46.there, coming back into the pits, on-board Lewis Hamilton's car. The

:33:47. > :33:50.heat on the disks on the left of the shot, some heat from the radiators,

:33:51. > :33:53.in the middle that is the sideboard intake will stop locale hot it gets

:33:54. > :34:02.another is no effort owing through it. All the heat in the radiators

:34:03. > :34:05.now not being called by the passage of air so you get very hotspots.

:34:06. > :34:10.They bring the coolers into the brake discs, they put them on the

:34:11. > :34:13.side pod them. That is the reason, because the build-up of heat, as

:34:14. > :34:17.soon as the car stops moving, no fans like you have on a red card to

:34:18. > :34:27.keep the moving once it comes to a stop. Some of your comments coming

:34:28. > :34:35.in. Henry says Bottas can challenge for best of the rest, do we agree?

:34:36. > :34:41.We saw in Bahrain in particular where Bottas was very fast, that was

:34:42. > :34:46.a truck with straight lines, good braking, he was competitive. Force

:34:47. > :34:51.India were competitive. It could be tough for Red Bull behind this ABC.

:34:52. > :34:57.There are some people talking about the Mercedes form, McLaren, Force

:34:58. > :35:04.India, Williams, those eight cars will dominate here. It will be a

:35:05. > :35:08.case of can Red Bull find ninth? I think there is enough places where

:35:09. > :35:14.the driver can make a difference on the car, and I don't think they will

:35:15. > :35:17.be that low-down. They might struggle to get a car on the first

:35:18. > :35:23.two rows. Williams certainly one of those teams that you would expect to

:35:24. > :35:28.be challenging. Bottas saying a podium might be on, let's wait and

:35:29. > :35:33.see. Let's not speak too soon. Just the man to ask joining us from

:35:34. > :35:40.the pit wall, Christian Horner. Thank you for joining us. Pleasure.

:35:41. > :35:44.We have as questions coming in, as to who you might be fighting with

:35:45. > :35:47.this weekend to a certain extent. You can tell us much more cleanly,

:35:48. > :35:51.we know this is a track that will be tricky for you, can you challenge

:35:52. > :35:55.Mercedes and are you keeping an eye on those guys behind Mike Williams,

:35:56. > :36:00.Force India? Under normal circumstances you would

:36:01. > :36:03.have to say Mercedes have got to be the favourites. Already they are at

:36:04. > :36:08.the top of the time sheets with a bit of a margin. In all reality it

:36:09. > :36:17.will be very tough for us under pressure. Ferrari has supposedly got

:36:18. > :36:20.an upgrade, in demise. Something like Force India as well, cars are

:36:21. > :36:25.very efficient on the straight, they will be a factor as well.

:36:26. > :36:30.Not going to be an easy weekend but we have seen both from Daniel

:36:31. > :36:34.Riccardo, and Sebastien as well, generally you have been the second

:36:35. > :36:37.best team this year, includes Bahrain where Daniel Riccardo, he

:36:38. > :36:42.had a penalty but put in a pick -- quick lap in qualifying. We have

:36:43. > :36:47.given away a lot of points as well engine reliability issues,

:36:48. > :36:54.extremely, Monte Carlo we have been on the podium for times this year.

:36:55. > :36:54.extremely, Monte Carlo we have been We feel we are closing that gap

:36:55. > :36:59.down. An We feel we are closing that gap

:37:00. > :37:05.have done, particularly on the power unit side, the others are having to

:37:06. > :37:12.work in red brick hard -- work incredibly hard to catch up. They

:37:13. > :37:18.look so it was a turbo failure in Monaco, a fairly spectacular one.

:37:19. > :37:23.The car wasn't going anywhere after its last pit stop.

:37:24. > :37:28.We heard from marker after the race saying it was not acceptable, there

:37:29. > :37:34.was going to be some meetings. Were there?

:37:35. > :37:40.No table thumping, at the end of the day we won four World Championships

:37:41. > :37:42.with Renault, every victory we have had has been with Renault engines.

:37:43. > :37:50.They have had a tough start. They got it wrong. Turned up unrepaired

:37:51. > :37:56.and behind. They are working hard to try and close that gap down. It is

:37:57. > :38:01.critical for them. They need to reduce that gap to Mercedes so we

:38:02. > :38:05.can compete with them. Alan here, just a question, you

:38:06. > :38:08.mentioned how Force India were looking strong, Ferrari with your

:38:09. > :38:14.upgrades, what is your target for this weekend?

:38:15. > :38:21.If we can get in a top five, top six, all things being equal, that is

:38:22. > :38:25.probably where we will be on pace. As you know, anything can happen.

:38:26. > :38:33.You have got to be in it to try and hustle in the race, there are other

:38:34. > :38:39.factors other than just out right one lap pace.

:38:40. > :38:44.On top of that, finally, what tracks that are coming up are the ones you

:38:45. > :38:48.guys perhaps are really going to be looking to challenge Mercedes, which

:38:49. > :39:01.was set that you mark Singapore. Hungary should be right,

:39:02. > :39:06.Silverstone. The Red Bull ring. We are busy putting a lot of corners

:39:07. > :39:10.into that circuit. The longer straight will be about 500 metres.

:39:11. > :39:15.Amazing what you can do in a short space of time.

:39:16. > :39:18.Absolutely. Thank you, look forward to speaking to you later.

:39:19. > :39:22.It is all a little bit quiet on track, we have been through the

:39:23. > :39:31.first half-hour of running, Hamilton ahead of Rosberg. There is a, Tony.

:39:32. > :39:33.They've got a big margin. John Eric then, good effort in fourth.

:39:34. > :39:55.Riccardo is this. Bottas is just ahead of his

:39:56. > :39:58.team-mate. First ever laps for Magnussen on this track. It will

:39:59. > :40:00.take him a little while to get up to speed. Rosberg at the moment is at

:40:01. > :40:15.the top. Where is the first non-Mercedes? It

:40:16. > :40:24.is a, Eriksson in the catering. -- eighth place. No sign of the Red

:40:25. > :40:28.Bull cars in there. They tend to not have particularly high speeds, even

:40:29. > :40:31.in front running pace. The caterer hasn't got much

:40:32. > :40:36.downforce. -- caterer.

:40:37. > :40:45.Felipe Massa looks pretty relaxed. He was talking to as yesterday. Had

:40:46. > :40:49.a little bit of a difficult season in terms of what could have been

:40:50. > :40:53.expected. Some people were expecting podiums, some were looking at

:40:54. > :40:58.Williams delivering this year after some promising performances in

:40:59. > :41:02.testing. Speaking to Lee yesterday, Felipe Massa just explaining on that

:41:03. > :41:11.factor the season could have delivered some more points.

:41:12. > :41:14.We missed some points, you know, during the championship, we missed

:41:15. > :41:20.some opportunities because I had a mistake, because something happened

:41:21. > :41:25.in the race. We missed some opportunities, some points. We still

:41:26. > :41:35.can have a chance to score with the amount of points. I hope this is a

:41:36. > :41:42.race we can score more points in, Felipe Massa, it has been a little

:41:43. > :41:44.bit of a struggle for him. Valtteri Bottas has demonstrated

:41:45. > :41:49.some good performance. One non-finish, last time out for him,

:41:50. > :41:54.or disappointing, in Monaco. That's both his 100% scoring record.

:41:55. > :42:06.He was saying they traced back down to a Barings failure. -- bearing. He

:42:07. > :42:11.is looking for a good result this weekend.

:42:12. > :42:18.A few more comments coming in. Thank you very much. Nick Payne saying on

:42:19. > :42:21.the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton

:42:22. > :42:25.saying it is cool between them, and Nico Rosberg is so convincing, not,

:42:26. > :42:29.it is great to have rivalry. Especially when it is England versus

:42:30. > :42:33.Germany. Lots of that aspect to it will stop a lot of the drivers being

:42:34. > :42:37.asked about the World Cup yesterday. Varying degrees of interest in

:42:38. > :42:41.following the World Cup that is soon to be upon us.

:42:42. > :42:46.They started with care by a she. -- Cabaye Ashley.

:42:47. > :42:58.Alonso is quite keen. Jenson Button is taking a casual interest but not

:42:59. > :43:02.many fanatics. Force India we have mentioned doing

:43:03. > :43:06.well and the championship, fourth in the Constructors' Championship.

:43:07. > :43:11.Let's get down to Lee at four in the first -- Force India.

:43:12. > :43:15.In mine ability's home race but almost your home race? Nearly, I

:43:16. > :43:19.grew up not far from here in Michigan on the Canadian border.

:43:20. > :43:22.Nice to be back in North America. Nice to have had such a good season,

:43:23. > :43:29.fourth in the construction championship. We were third for a

:43:30. > :43:33.while, now four. Very difficult to maintain the pace we started off

:43:34. > :43:37.with but we are trying to do that. We should have a good race. We can

:43:38. > :43:42.hopefully maintain fourth-place Angry Bear 23rd.

:43:43. > :43:44.To get that podium from Sergio Peres, he is fitting in well to your

:43:45. > :43:52.team. We certainly like him, he likes the

:43:53. > :43:56.team. He fitted in quite quickly. Now it seems like he has been here

:43:57. > :44:00.for years but it has only been a few races. He has got a good chance of a

:44:01. > :44:07.podium here and said as Nico, they are those Bacharach both very

:44:08. > :44:10.competent drivers. How do you think your car will go

:44:11. > :44:14.round here, it shouldn't be too bad. The right engine in the back.

:44:15. > :44:24.Mercedes have done a great job for us. Traditionally we have gone when

:44:25. > :44:32.Hill --, well here. But we have run into people, fallen into the trap.

:44:33. > :44:38.We expect to be competitive at this race, and, like you say, the

:44:39. > :44:42.powertrain is important and Mercedes have done a good job.

:44:43. > :44:45.Heading to Silverstone, the team's home Grand Prix, amazing to get a

:44:46. > :44:48.good result in front of all the fans and the guys that work in the

:44:49. > :44:51.factory that don't get it onto every race.

:44:52. > :44:55.Silverstone because we are so close is one where on a Thursday or even

:44:56. > :44:59.Wednesday, the factory personnel do get a chance to go have a look, some

:45:00. > :45:05.of them even on Friday if we can rotate it as such. That is our home

:45:06. > :45:08.race. It will be great if we had a good result here in Austria looking

:45:09. > :45:16.forward to our home race at Silverstone. Al onto your guys are

:45:17. > :45:29.back out? Probably another five or ten minutes. Mix in changes and we

:45:30. > :45:37.will be out of here. Force India, fourth in the championship. A good

:45:38. > :45:43.result here last year. But it has not always gone well for them but it

:45:44. > :45:45.was a decent results last season? They have done

:45:46. > :45:50.was a decent results last season? a relatively small budget. Hats off

:45:51. > :45:56.to the team. We talk about Bottas not finishing in Monaco, it leaves

:45:57. > :46:02.three drivers when a 100% finishing record. It will be tough for them to

:46:03. > :46:08.take the third place in the construct does, because that belongs

:46:09. > :46:16.to Ferrari at the moment. Updates from Ferrari this weekend. Let's get

:46:17. > :46:20.back to Alan. I think I will go on the circuit towards the last chicane

:46:21. > :46:24.to see how they are coming through. The circuit is dirty and we have

:46:25. > :46:31.seen a lot of dust flying around and that is why the cars are sitting in

:46:32. > :46:37.the pits. They have a limited amount of tyres so they want to make sure

:46:38. > :46:42.they use them properly. I will go to see what is happening on the track.

:46:43. > :46:49.Will be interesting to see what comes up. Into the Ferrari pit. They

:46:50. > :46:55.are experimenting with different things on the car this weekend so

:46:56. > :46:59.difficult to get a clear picture. I was talking about Red Bull and we

:47:00. > :47:03.were talking to Christian Horner. He was telling us about their

:47:04. > :47:09.expectations. Sebastian Vettel coming into an event he has done

:47:10. > :47:17.very well at, but coming in knowing he has a car not as competitive, may

:47:18. > :47:20.be difficult. Lee McKenzie caught up with him yesterday and asked him in

:47:21. > :47:34.a situation like this do you arrive with less rounds or motivation? --

:47:35. > :47:42.bounce. Not really. Obviously, Mercedes is very strong. The gap is

:47:43. > :47:50.too big if you ask us. I'm sure they disagree. But it is the name of the

:47:51. > :47:54.game. There is always a chance to do well and a chance no matter where

:47:55. > :48:10.you start on the grid. Your chances are higher when you are in a good

:48:11. > :48:20.car but I think we have a good package. Not the easiest track for

:48:21. > :48:28.us this weekend. But there is a chance to win. Sebastian Vettel

:48:29. > :48:32.always looking for that opportunity. Daniil Kvyat is out in the Toro

:48:33. > :48:37.Rosso at the moment, another driver learning the circuit. He is new to

:48:38. > :48:40.Formula One and new to the Montreal track. A lot of them will have spent

:48:41. > :48:43.some time in the simulator. Ericsson spends a lot of time in the Caterham

:48:44. > :48:45.simulator to get his eye in, but there is nothing like driving a

:48:46. > :48:48.truck like this. Just the two cars out at the moment and Magnusson has

:48:49. > :48:49.just gone out as well. A few drivers and not on the track, including

:48:50. > :49:00.reserve drivers. We have Alexander Rossi in the Caterham, I reserve

:49:01. > :49:05.driver. And Giedo van der Garde is talking to Lee McKenzie. You are

:49:06. > :49:10.desperate to get in the car, but you are speaking to me instead. What is

:49:11. > :49:14.going on in the garage at the moment last remark we have used the first

:49:15. > :49:21.30 minutes and now they are changing something in the rear. Both cars

:49:22. > :49:26.have a different road grime. We brought a big update in Barcelona

:49:27. > :49:32.but something was not working very well. Now they are testing again to

:49:33. > :49:36.find a solution. When you have driven at a circuit like this how

:49:37. > :49:42.frustrating is it you are standing here and not in the car this

:49:43. > :49:46.weekend? It is tucked sometimes. But it is investment in the future.

:49:47. > :49:56.Sometimes you have two step back. The aim is to raise next year and so

:49:57. > :50:03.far it is good. I am happy where I am. It is a great team. I miss the

:50:04. > :50:07.racing but that's the way it is now. It has been a tough season Mauritius

:50:08. > :50:16.points than Sabha, what has not gone right with this car? The car seems

:50:17. > :50:22.to have been OK. Just a few little issues. We are not as competitive as

:50:23. > :50:34.last year but it is a team who can improve a lot during the season and

:50:35. > :50:39.we are not where we wanted to be. We were a little bit unlucky in Monaco

:50:40. > :50:45.were at the two drivers made errors and cost us a lot of points. But we

:50:46. > :50:51.keep fighting and I am sure we will be back. When will we see you in a

:50:52. > :50:56.free practice again? Silverstone. He will be doing the test that follows

:50:57. > :51:01.Silverstone and he has Friday morning sessions from Silverstone

:51:02. > :51:10.onwards. So getting more time in the car. You have two said the mistake

:51:11. > :51:20.Gutierrez made in particular, Tony, was fundamental. I went to his press

:51:21. > :51:24.conference yesterday and you could see how much it chewed him up. It

:51:25. > :51:29.was an opportunity to score points but it was his mistake? It is always

:51:30. > :51:41.difficult to deal with. Lee McKenzie made the point that it is crucial

:51:42. > :51:43.for them to finish in the top ten. They will be hanging onto that by

:51:44. > :51:50.the skin of their teeth. Caterham had a 11th and 13th in Monaco. It is

:51:51. > :51:57.that tight. With reliability, you don't see that many opportunities to

:51:58. > :52:03.score points if you have a car that isn't performing. That top ten is

:52:04. > :52:10.about millions of pounds of prize money at the end of the day and that

:52:11. > :52:17.is why it matters so much. And that could mean the difference between

:52:18. > :52:20.existing and not existing. It does matter those lower teams picked up

:52:21. > :52:22.points. Alan has found his way onto the track. Kevin Magnussen is coming

:52:23. > :52:26.down to the last corner, Alan? Walking past the tyre set sitting

:52:27. > :52:30.out the back from the first half an hour. It looks like they are not

:52:31. > :52:38.working. The surface of the tyre has had some effect but there is no

:52:39. > :52:42.depth to it. The cars are struggling to generate the temperature they

:52:43. > :52:47.will need to get a grip. I think there will be quite a lot of people

:52:48. > :52:51.coming down the escape road. Caterham just accelerates over the

:52:52. > :53:00.start and finish line. Watching Daniil Kvyat here. Had to ease off a

:53:01. > :53:06.break. Had to take the extra bits of asphalt. There are some extra

:53:07. > :53:12.asphalt run-off areas this year. Hopefully you can run wide and not

:53:13. > :53:19.end your session. There is one at the top end of the hairpin at ten.

:53:20. > :53:25.Ericsson, just getting to grips with this circuit. The tyres Alan

:53:26. > :53:29.mentions and the situation with the Pirelli tyres this year, it isn't

:53:30. > :53:32.easy for the drivers and teams because Pirelli have gone

:53:33. > :53:37.conservative for this year. They didn't want the stories to be how

:53:38. > :53:42.the tyres were giving up. But the other side is it is proving

:53:43. > :53:47.difficult for the teams and drivers to get these ties to work?

:53:48. > :53:53.Absolutely, Bottas was a bit reserved when he was asked was this

:53:54. > :53:56.a great opportunity? It would be great to get Alan to comment on

:53:57. > :53:59.that, particularly this circuit. Is it a circuit you lose tyre

:54:00. > :54:07.temperature because you are not working the tyre that often? You

:54:08. > :54:12.will see it on the thermal imaging, coming down straight, you lose tyre

:54:13. > :54:16.temperature and then it is in the braking area in the first initial

:54:17. > :54:22.turn when it builds up again. But the balance changes through the

:54:23. > :54:33.turns big cars the grip is changing as the tyre heats up and cools down.

:54:34. > :54:48.They have a harder compound so they struggle to make them work anyway.

:54:49. > :55:00.Then it is cooler than it was expected to be. When you put it

:55:01. > :55:01.together with a dusty circuit it suggests a tough morning for

:55:02. > :55:03.everybody out on track. Lee McKenzie, you can update is about

:55:04. > :55:06.the temperatures? The track temperature has changed, it has come

:55:07. > :55:12.down. The wind is ringing in a lot of cloud. It is grey skies and there

:55:13. > :55:16.are some wind drops. It is meant to look fair for the rest of the

:55:17. > :55:18.weekend. Saturday looks scorching. Around about 28 degrees. The team

:55:19. > :55:20.won't want any rain for re-practice because if it is not going to be

:55:21. > :55:27.like that for the rest of the weekend, it almost renders this

:55:28. > :55:36.session useless. Looking at Alexander Rossi, had a lock up into

:55:37. > :55:40.turn ten. And the little one into the last corner. The car is moving

:55:41. > :55:44.around. He is getting an opportunity to drive, but I am sure it is

:55:45. > :55:50.feeling different to the car he has been in recently. Alan, I think you

:55:51. > :55:56.saw him? Yes, he locked up as he turned in and had to correct it. He

:55:57. > :56:03.was close to the kerbs as the Lotus ran through neatly. McLaren is the

:56:04. > :56:12.best of the cars out on the circuit. Able to run a lot of speed into the

:56:13. > :56:14.APEC will stop everybody else is dancing on the throttle as they

:56:15. > :56:19.accelerate. Read all looks good for the first lap out of the pits. You

:56:20. > :56:25.say that about McLaren because Magnusson has gone third fastest

:56:26. > :56:32.recently. When you consider it is his first time at this circuit,

:56:33. > :56:39.Jenson Button is fifth. On a better lap right now, Jenson Button.

:56:40. > :56:45.McLaren's confidence not miss placed as they came into this event. This

:56:46. > :56:51.is a good lap from Jenson Button. Alan, he will be heading to you in a

:56:52. > :57:00.minute. TEAM RADIO: your tyre temperatures are at the bottom of

:57:01. > :57:06.the working range, still. Do not do laps which are too cool. That was to

:57:07. > :57:12.Alexander Rossi at Jenson Button has just been passed you? Yes, he

:57:13. > :57:18.mounted the kerb on the right-hand side. Also got two wheels onto the

:57:19. > :57:25.white kerb, which is quite large. The car are absorbed it very well. A

:57:26. > :57:30.very clean exit from Jenson Button. Looking at Lewis Hamilton. He has

:57:31. > :57:38.done nine laps in this session. Nico Rosberg has done ten. Waiting to see

:57:39. > :57:50.them both on the circuit again. The last part of the lap was not so good

:57:51. > :57:56.for Jenson Button, Vern is sixth, Daniel Riccardi oh coming through

:57:57. > :57:58.turn two and accelerates to the first of the chicanes. Turns three

:57:59. > :58:05.and four. first of the chicanes. Turns three

:58:06. > :58:09.little bit and how the car and suspension absorbs those curves is a

:58:10. > :58:21.little bit and how the car and factor in tuning a car to be quick

:58:22. > :58:29.here. You have this decent stretch towards the little bridge. Perhaps a

:58:30. > :58:37.fraction too deep. Long, sweeping corner. This is where Robert qubits

:58:38. > :58:44.have an accident in 2007. Everybody watched the accident and could not

:58:45. > :58:54.believe it when he was OK after it. The following year he came back to

:58:55. > :58:58.win this grand prix. Romain Grosjean and having a bit of a whinge. He was

:58:59. > :59:09.in the middle of some other cars. Just following Bianchi down the

:59:10. > :59:17.straight. Robert qubits are is a big loss to Formula One. He was a

:59:18. > :59:24.special talent. He is. Rallying again this weekend. Pastor

:59:25. > :59:31.Maldonado, on-board with him. Let's see if the Lotus is a struggle. He

:59:32. > :59:36.is 13th quickest the moment. Just building up heat in the tyres at a

:59:37. > :59:43.moment. Using the brakes on the straight line to builds up the

:59:44. > :59:49.temperature which helps the tyre bit more. Looking at Sebastian Vettel.

:59:50. > :59:56.Winner here last year. Three pole positions coming into this event.

:59:57. > :59:59.Looking very tidy, 10th quickest. On-board with Sebastian Vettel as he

:00:00. > :00:06.heads towards the hairpin. Grandstands all around. Great place

:00:07. > :00:12.to look down on the Formula One car. On the power to get on the pace as

:00:13. > :00:21.quickly as possible. He is heading down to your area, Alan. He comes in

:00:22. > :00:23.and flicks right and left through the chicane. The good thing about

:00:24. > :00:30.red wool is the speed it changes direction. The front of the car is

:00:31. > :00:36.so precise. Then into the left and it allows him to be straight and

:00:37. > :00:38.quick back onto the throttle. The rear of the car does not look as

:00:39. > :00:45.stable as the McLaren but the front is much more agile.

:00:46. > :00:52.But has gone third quickest, both McLaren cars going well. Alonso is

:00:53. > :01:00.still fifth. A bit of a slide that, he was that in front? It might have

:01:01. > :01:10.been Jean-Eric Vergne. Got out the way. Having a little look at Bianchi

:01:11. > :01:15.going very slowly. The car seemed to be vibrating. It doesn't look like

:01:16. > :01:22.he has got a puncture. Going very slowly indeed. In fact, I think he

:01:23. > :01:29.is going to have to stop. Trying to see if we can hear anything. He has

:01:30. > :01:37.hit the wall. He has hit the wall with the right rear. He has knocked

:01:38. > :01:40.the right rear suspension. That is what you are going to see here.

:01:41. > :01:49.Probably the Wall of Champions. He is a bit further round. It might be

:01:50. > :01:52.that only one. That is interesting. Might have been out of turn four.

:01:53. > :02:01.That is where we saw Riccardo run wide. That was Gutierrez taking a

:02:02. > :02:07.slightly odd line. Let's see if we can get a replay. Here is Bianchi.

:02:08. > :02:16.There was the contact. A big fish tail as a result of it afterwards.

:02:17. > :02:23.The drivers talk about flirting with the walls here, that was a

:02:24. > :02:27.full-blown affair. A little replay. That was close to hitting the wall.

:02:28. > :02:30.With these new hybrid That was close to hitting the wall.

:02:31. > :02:33.will see some fantastic shots like that as we go through the course of

:02:34. > :02:43.this weekend. Bianchi trying to limp back. That would help the crew get

:02:44. > :02:48.to work on it before the end of the session. At the lower end of the

:02:49. > :02:51.order... Look at the vibration as he tries to drive along slowly as

:02:52. > :03:04.possible. If drives to quickly will damage loads of other parts. It

:03:05. > :03:13.might be a track rod failure. When he goes round the corner in my be

:03:14. > :03:17.tricky. That kind of vibration will not be doing" any good. All the

:03:18. > :03:22.vibration goes through the drive shaft into the box. It will not be

:03:23. > :03:27.doing anything much good at all. Got to go as slowly as possible, not to

:03:28. > :03:31.cause further damage. Hamilton and Rosberg, one and two, with over half

:03:32. > :03:39.an hour to go. Jenson Button, and encouraging third. A very slow

:03:40. > :03:46.Bianchi limping his car back to the pits. Bianchi is faster than his

:03:47. > :03:53.team-mate, Chilton. He is faster than Eriksson. What about

:03:54. > :03:59.Kobayashi? Let's see what time he has achieved so far. He is not

:04:00. > :04:07.there. Sorry. Alexander Rossi is out. Rossi and Eriksson at the lower

:04:08. > :04:16.end of the order. Rosberg is about to come past due, Alan.

:04:17. > :04:22.Coming through. One of the Mercedes just flicking through. When they hit

:04:23. > :04:26.the kerb, a huge white curb, they are able to jump onto that. The car

:04:27. > :04:32.absorbs it. We have seen that semi-times when the Mercedes is able

:04:33. > :04:39.to use curbs more and easier. -- so many times. They are nice and

:04:40. > :04:45.nimble. The Red Bull is quick on its reaction. The McLaren is good into

:04:46. > :04:48.the apex. Keeping a good minimum speed.

:04:49. > :04:52.Rosberg is the speed.

:04:53. > :05:00.with. He has got faster again. Fastest out right now. Continuing

:05:01. > :05:05.with another quick lap. The Mercedes has that compliance. Nothing to do

:05:06. > :05:11.with the power unit, purely down to the first and -- chassis engineers.

:05:12. > :05:15.Something other engineers could do with their cars if they could make

:05:16. > :05:20.it work. Here he comes again for that we have got a yellow.

:05:21. > :05:34.Somebody has missed a chicane. Quite a slow entry. It allows the chassis

:05:35. > :05:37.engineers, a company package. They don't have a weak point, they have

:05:38. > :05:42.got strengths in all areas. Without doubt, that compliance is something

:05:43. > :05:46.that has got a big effect here. That is probably their perfect circuit.

:05:47. > :05:47.They have got pretty good low speed grip, good compliance over the

:05:48. > :05:53.kerbs, very good straight-line speed. The circuit is all about

:05:54. > :05:58.compliance over the kerbs, good top speed.

:05:59. > :06:04.Gone faster again Hamilton is on a quicker lap. We will see lap times

:06:05. > :06:08.improve further and further. Looking at the comparison with the first

:06:09. > :06:12.back to session the last couple of years. Last year was damp when Paolo

:06:13. > :06:19.di Resta was busted, not merely of relevant time. Before that Hamilton

:06:20. > :06:31.was quickest. We are a couple of seconds away from that last time. We

:06:32. > :06:38.are watching the Ferrari crossed the line. That is encouraging. Only two

:06:39. > :06:42.tenths of a second slower than Nico Rosberg on previous lap. Hamilton

:06:43. > :06:50.will go quicker than either of them. Riding on board with him as he

:06:51. > :06:55.crosses the line. He takes a full half a second out of Rosberg's time.

:06:56. > :07:03.There was Hamilton always quick here. We are almost into one minute

:07:04. > :07:09.16. A second or half away from couple of years ago. These tyres are

:07:10. > :07:15.harder. That was Sebastian Vettel almost touching the wall. He has hit

:07:16. > :07:20.it in the past. Two tenths slower than Fernando Alonso. Which until

:07:21. > :07:25.Hamilton did his lap was looking quite good but Hamilton has now

:07:26. > :07:28.raised the bar somewhat. Alonso's time not quite as impressive as it

:07:29. > :07:32.was a few moments ago. Jenson Button is fifth, Magnussen is in sixth

:07:33. > :07:42.place. Tax Chilton just a moment ago. Using the escape route. Picking

:07:43. > :07:47.up the little bit of debris. He hops the kerb, that is not ideal. Most

:07:48. > :07:53.drivers will try to come down to the end, there is a gap. That doesn't

:07:54. > :07:58.damage to the floor. Alonso has just improved, and other good lap. This

:07:59. > :08:03.is really encouraging. That is impressive. Like Red Bull,

:08:04. > :08:06.they were expecting That is impressive. Like Red Bull,

:08:07. > :08:11.of the top tracks for them, let's wait and see whether that is an

:08:12. > :08:16.engine upgrade. They were bringing a big engine

:08:17. > :08:19.upgrade to this event. Your god to think whatever they have done is

:08:20. > :08:23.working, you wonder how risky they might go. If you were Ferrari you

:08:24. > :08:27.might go a bit more risky first even if it ended up being a

:08:28. > :08:30.non-finisher, got to find some performance from somewhere.

:08:31. > :08:35.Nothing to lose. Third in the Chemmy chip, so far back. They have got to

:08:36. > :08:43.try everything. -- in the championship. Bianchi has got his

:08:44. > :08:48.car back. Let's take a look at the replay of Rosberg. He said it was

:08:49. > :08:56.breaking that is one area he is not 100% happy with the car. An

:08:57. > :09:00.interesting comment, it takes several months to break them. What

:09:01. > :09:04.he was talking about this is Bianchi's hit earlier, that is a

:09:05. > :09:10.good view of it from the camera mounted in the barrier. They just

:09:11. > :09:15.found that shot. Making carbon discs is not a process you can do

:09:16. > :09:18.overnight. He must be talking about changing the discs slightly, not

:09:19. > :09:24.just the fly by wire. He said it can take five months. It

:09:25. > :09:32.is difficult. The last year, it was Hamilton wasn't particularly happy.

:09:33. > :09:37.Nico Rosberg saying he hasn't cracked it.

:09:38. > :09:42.Looking at a different disc being used. Let's speak to Lee at

:09:43. > :09:48.Williams. Bad news for Felipe Massa, his car

:09:49. > :09:53.has developed cares problems, he is out for the rest of the session.

:09:54. > :10:01.It seems to be matter all the time getting the bad luck at Williams. On

:10:02. > :10:04.board with Hulkenberg, he is being fastest at the moment for Force

:10:05. > :10:12.India for stock still sing Jean-Eric Vergne up there in a times. -- still

:10:13. > :10:20.seeing. Sebastian Vettel is the fastest of the Renault power users.

:10:21. > :10:27.We ride through turns one and two, stay with him. Three beginners, just

:10:28. > :10:30.charging up towards the second chicane -- through the gears.

:10:31. > :10:35.Raikkonen doesn't seem to be the same place Alonso. They could well

:10:36. > :10:39.be put in different parts on these two cars, that is what they tend to

:10:40. > :10:43.do on Friday morning. They could begin that things

:10:44. > :10:52.back-to-back testing. He has been struggling compared to Fernando

:10:53. > :11:03.right from the start of the year. James Allison said that the gap has

:11:04. > :11:06.been closing. Raikkonen has some sensitivities with the brakes and

:11:07. > :11:10.steering which are causing him some issues. They have got to work away

:11:11. > :11:16.at that, try to get the bottom of it. You would expect this would be

:11:17. > :11:18.one of the places where it would affect him.

:11:19. > :11:20.The chance to see the Ferrari through the chicane, any

:11:21. > :11:23.observations? A very big distance between the two

:11:24. > :11:26.cars stop Kimi Raikonnen doesn't seem to be very confident on

:11:27. > :11:28.cars stop Kimi Raikonnen doesn't brakes, the car is doing two or

:11:29. > :11:32.three different things, as if it was on and off on the way towards the

:11:33. > :11:36.apex was also extremely close to the grass here on the left-hand side as

:11:37. > :11:40.he tries to get the car into what worries Alonso on the other side,

:11:41. > :11:44.just a little bit more composed as if he was a little bit more

:11:45. > :11:48.confident with it. These two cars are running in different

:11:49. > :11:52.specifications this morning. They have got a new floor package onto

:11:53. > :11:55.the Ferrari. Alonso has got it this afternoon, they are going to packet

:11:56. > :11:59.onto Raikkonen for the second session.

:12:00. > :12:03.Let's get down to the pit lane, Lee has managed to catch up with

:12:04. > :12:06.Bianchi. People flirt with the war but that

:12:07. > :12:12.was a pretty big case. How damaged as the car? Pretty

:12:13. > :12:19.damaged. I was trying to be the limit. I did that a bit too much. It

:12:20. > :12:22.is OK. The limit is so fine on this

:12:23. > :12:26.circuit, particularly for stop what is it like to drive?

:12:27. > :12:32.It is a bit like Monaco, but kerb is much higher.

:12:33. > :12:35.You mentioned Monaco, kerb is much higher.

:12:36. > :12:42.result for yourself, and for the team. Your family have had success

:12:43. > :12:47.there add well stop a really lovely story for the also great for

:12:48. > :12:50.Marussia as well. Great for everybody, we did a good

:12:51. > :12:53.job in Monaco but we have to focus on Montreal.

:12:54. > :12:59.Have a good weekend. Just referring to the fact his

:13:00. > :13:08.granduncle, Lucien Bianchi got a podium in Monaco. It seems to be a

:13:09. > :13:13.great track for the family. He is focused on the rest of his career.

:13:14. > :13:15.People talk about him as a potential driver for some of the top teams

:13:16. > :13:21.will stop the question that is coming from Brian Hoskins, saying

:13:22. > :13:26.we'll Fernando Alonso 's stay at Ferrari until 2016 and beyond, if

:13:27. > :13:33.not what he would keep dry for -- would he drive for? If he left,

:13:34. > :13:41.where would he go? Where did he go? Mercedes, supposedly, is tied down.

:13:42. > :13:44.Red Bull, Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Riccardo impressing weekend,

:13:45. > :13:51.week out. If the -- Fernando was on the market what would you do? Would

:13:52. > :13:57.you jettison Daniel Riccardo four Fernando Alonso? What about McLaren

:13:58. > :14:02.and Honda, with a chase him? He has been there before, there is

:14:03. > :14:05.history, a bit of bad blood. There is one Dennis back in charge of that

:14:06. > :14:13.team who Fernando had the stand-off with -- Ron Dennis. It is a bizarre

:14:14. > :14:18.situation. But the man who many feel is the best driver in the world, and

:14:19. > :14:21.what are his options? You can find out a bit more about

:14:22. > :14:25.what is going on in that mind of his because the BBC, on our coverage,

:14:26. > :14:31.Tom Clarkson has done an interview with him, it will be in our race

:14:32. > :14:36.build-up from 6:20pm. I do hope you can join us for that. Lewis Hamilton

:14:37. > :14:39.on track at the moment, you can always catch up with Lewis

:14:40. > :14:44.Hamilton's thought. He is thinking I have gone into quick! You can catch

:14:45. > :14:49.up with his thoughts on the BBC website. He does a regular column

:14:50. > :14:56.which will be up to date. He has just overshot the entrance, that

:14:57. > :14:59.will put a big flat spot on the tyres, getting quite a vibration

:15:00. > :15:04.from that. Not ideal as he goes through the rest of the session. He

:15:05. > :15:08.had just gone fastest in both first and second sectors, but Alonso has

:15:09. > :15:16.gone quickest of all. The previous lap he did was 117.2. Hamilton was

:15:17. > :15:28.on to he blew the entrance to the hairpin so he ends up that Alonso is

:15:29. > :15:36.fastest, Hamilton second. You have got to say Ferrari's pace is a lift

:15:37. > :15:40.for the team. Mercedes, I think keep something in reserve on Friday. But

:15:41. > :15:51.this was the lock up, Tony and it went on for a while? Yes, I wonder

:15:52. > :15:53.if he was getting a vibration. Slow motion makes it look

:15:54. > :15:55.if he was getting a vibration. Slow Real-time, it was

:15:56. > :16:01.if he was getting a vibration. Slow a second locked up. You can see some

:16:02. > :16:08.marking on the right front tyre. We have 20 minutes to go. Bottas

:16:09. > :16:15.Ontrack in the Williams. Down in 16th place. Massa has some problems

:16:16. > :16:22.with his car and in 17th and we are unlikely to see him back out. There

:16:23. > :16:27.he is watching. It has been confirmed he has a KERS related

:16:28. > :16:34.problem with his car. Magnusson and Button have just gone back out in

:16:35. > :16:47.the McLarens. Hoping they can get ahead of Sebastian Vettel who is

:16:48. > :16:56.fourth in the Red Bull. Further down, Hulkenberg and Perez. Vergne

:16:57. > :16:58.keeping his Renault engine Toro Rosso in amongst them. Good

:16:59. > :17:05.opportunities, I would say. Raikkonen is doing well. Several

:17:06. > :17:11.cars coming down the back stretch, Ericsson, Magnusson and Bottas.

:17:12. > :17:16.Cloud developing overhead. We'll have to see if we stay dry for this

:17:17. > :17:22.session or if we see some rain falling. Track temperature has

:17:23. > :17:26.dropped, which is unusual, during the session, even further, down to

:17:27. > :17:40.24 degrees. We are on-board with Bottas. Flicking through the gears

:17:41. > :17:46.almost instantly. So much is the power of these hybrid power units.

:17:47. > :17:55.Keeping it well away from the wall at the moment. He is holding up.

:17:56. > :18:03.Half a second down at the first split. He hasn't done a lot of laps.

:18:04. > :18:10.Apart from Massa, he has done fewer laps than anybody else in this

:18:11. > :18:14.session. A bit out of shape. The rear end stability of Williams has

:18:15. > :18:19.been a factor this year? He might have the problem he feared, which is

:18:20. > :18:23.generating heat in the tyres. Which is what he was talking about it

:18:24. > :18:29.yesterday, getting the tyres into the correct operating temperature

:18:30. > :18:32.window. It is difficult to get the balance between front and rear.

:18:33. > :18:39.Jenson Button on circuit at the moment. Felipe Massa studying those

:18:40. > :18:43.times to see if there is anything he can learn for the second session

:18:44. > :18:50.this afternoon in Canada. Williams have had some success on this track

:18:51. > :18:54.in the past. But it is a few years ago since they had a victory. We

:18:55. > :19:02.have to go back to 2001 when Ralf Schumacher took the win. He also had

:19:03. > :19:09.a pole position here in 2004. They have had seven wins here at this

:19:10. > :19:15.circuit, Gilles Villeneuve, the Canadian Grand Prix. Since 1978,

:19:16. > :19:22.this has been the circuit for the Canadian Grand Prix. Jenson Button,

:19:23. > :19:27.the lab he just did, 120.8, not particularly quick. Let's see if

:19:28. > :19:37.this will be more of an attacking lap. Looking neat and tidy for the

:19:38. > :19:46.moment. Narrow section. A narrow ribbon of tarmac. Absolutely. He was

:19:47. > :19:49.talking about McLaren's difficult start to the season, but

:19:50. > :19:59.developments are making progress. He seemed to be much more up beat than

:20:00. > :20:03.you might imagine. Car is sliding around a bit. Coming up we find Nico

:20:04. > :20:12.Rosberg. Making sure he gets tight into the apex. John Eric Vergne into

:20:13. > :20:22.civvies. Only 14 laps completed. That is a bit of a surprise. Daniil

:20:23. > :20:27.Kvyat is in the pits at the moment. Will be interesting to see if there

:20:28. > :20:34.has been a problem for the Toro Rosso. We have seen Jean Eric Vergne

:20:35. > :20:43.setting impressive times but has not scored any point since Australia. It

:20:44. > :20:47.is not just about a lot, but you have to say in his case coming has

:20:48. > :20:53.been unfortunate. Ericsson ran wide just a moment ago. Over the grass

:20:54. > :20:57.and no damage done to the court, as he gets to grips with this circuit.

:20:58. > :21:05.Caterham, you forget, and maybe we lost it earlier with Marussia

:21:06. > :21:11.getting their first points, but Ericsson matched Caterham's best

:21:12. > :21:15.ever result in Monaco. Nobody took any notice of that. I am sure

:21:16. > :21:20.Swedish people dead, but with Marussia's performance getting in

:21:21. > :21:28.the points, his point went by the wayside. The most noteworthy thing

:21:29. > :21:40.said about him was about his crash helmet. He said he had a fantastic

:21:41. > :21:47.response about using the Ronnie Peterson crash helmet. He came

:21:48. > :21:50.within just a little bit of getting points. That would have been massive

:21:51. > :21:58.for him with his debut season with Caterham. Jonathan Foster saying,

:21:59. > :22:04.what do you think of Daniel Ricciardo running faster this

:22:05. > :22:11.season? Somebody else is asking will we see Daniel Ricciardo winning this

:22:12. > :22:16.season before Sebastian Vettel does? He has been very mature about it. He

:22:17. > :22:23.said when he was paired with Mark Webber, they look at overlays all

:22:24. > :22:29.the time and he would see Mark Webber was quicker than him setting

:22:30. > :22:37.speed in the corners. I * there was any pattern against Daniel. He said

:22:38. > :22:43.it is everywhere. He is admitting he is still not getting what he wants

:22:44. > :22:48.from the car. We will have two see how he responds. Mark Webber was

:22:49. > :22:52.always mega at the fast tracks, especially Silverstone, but did not

:22:53. > :23:01.have a great record here. Sebastian Vettel always performed well here.

:23:02. > :23:04.Nico Rosberg got held up by Maldonado and had to back out of

:23:05. > :23:10.what was going to be a reasonably fast lap. These tyres have all done

:23:11. > :23:17.their best. They have done getting on for 18 or 20 laps in some cases.

:23:18. > :23:26.They are well past their most efficient. See if he gets a clear

:23:27. > :23:28.lap this time. Long gap off the power before he is able to

:23:29. > :23:36.accelerate. That will be the brake balance. The number 51, 52 coming up

:23:37. > :23:41.on the screen in front of him, he is flicking the break violence between

:23:42. > :23:46.corners. I was talking to Max Chilton yesterday about how complex

:23:47. > :23:52.the braking is this year. In the past, you would make small

:23:53. > :23:57.adjustments, you might be talking to or 3%. But with the different ways

:23:58. > :24:04.of energy harvesting, recovery and doing it through the brake wire, it

:24:05. > :24:13.can be 20% shift onto the front. Then it eases off and transfers to

:24:14. > :24:17.the back. The first few times he was driving, you would get a soft pedal.

:24:18. > :24:21.You would have a braking effect but like on a road car you would have a

:24:22. > :24:25.soft pedal which was disconcerting. There are so many ways of tuning it,

:24:26. > :24:30.but it is very complex. When you come here and you need the break,

:24:31. > :24:35.this must be one of the most difficult tracks for the drivers to

:24:36. > :24:41.cope with that. We have seen some examples of drivers overcooking it.

:24:42. > :24:47.Alan, what are you seeing at turn one? The hairpin right hander, it

:24:48. > :24:53.has been close coming into it, locking up, especially Caterham.

:24:54. > :24:58.Caterham ran wide across the grass, bounced over the edge of the circuit

:24:59. > :25:02.in to turn two as Mercedes was coming out of the pits and there was

:25:03. > :25:08.very no earlier collision. It shows you how under limit the cars are

:25:09. > :25:13.with a low downforce. Grosjean sliding around. He has had to

:25:14. > :25:21.correct a little bit as he comes up through eight and nine. Heads up

:25:22. > :25:26.towards the top end of the circuit. That was coming out of six and

:25:27. > :25:34.seven, now he is up at eight and nine. Back of the car does not look

:25:35. > :25:39.that stable currently. Towards the hairpin he comes now. This is going

:25:40. > :25:50.to be a tough weekend for Lotus. Grosjean in 16th place. TEAM RADIO:

:25:51. > :26:06.concentrate on the lift and coast. Lift and coast by Hamilton. It was

:26:07. > :26:13.always the one where it was a margin bulk, and teams were designed their

:26:14. > :26:16.fuel tanks around the capacity for a race in Montreal. Most of the teams

:26:17. > :26:20.are confident they have that cracked. It will not be what we

:26:21. > :26:24.feared at the start of the year, with cars running out of petrol.

:26:25. > :26:27.Allen, coming from the world of sports car racing, you know about

:26:28. > :26:35.lift and coast, presumably we will see that here? Also this circuit has

:26:36. > :26:40.a lot of safety cars which helps them a little bit. You cannot

:26:41. > :26:46.necessarily rely on it, you can hope for it but not rely on it. A lot of

:26:47. > :26:49.long straights and then into slow corners so you can lift up 300

:26:50. > :26:59.metres before the corner and break the 100 metre mark. That saves fuel.

:27:00. > :27:03.That is when your lap time lost is least. We have been saying this year

:27:04. > :27:05.Lewis Hamilton has been able to save fuel versus Nico Rosberg, so

:27:06. > :27:13.presumably that could have an effect? He could even start with

:27:14. > :27:18.less fuel in the tank? Just when you said about the radio message to

:27:19. > :27:21.Lewis Hamilton, coming out of this hairpin, he is in a low gear and

:27:22. > :27:28.then as he touches the throttle, he shifts up a gear and it uses the

:27:29. > :27:31.engine to accelerate. By contrast, with Red Bull, they are revving out

:27:32. > :27:41.of the corner using the engine power to take them out of the corner. That

:27:42. > :27:45.style could gain you 1% of Euler, be benefit which could equal seconds at

:27:46. > :27:47.the end of the race by having to take less fuel at the beginning.

:27:48. > :27:54.That is being worked on from the early days. Hit man from the FIA.

:27:55. > :28:01.Quite early this race weekend, turning up Friday. He was in Monaco.

:28:02. > :28:10.Natural he would be there. TEAM RADIO: what kind of time should I

:28:11. > :28:17.should be doing? Target time, 19.8, 19.8. Nico Rosberg was hitting the

:28:18. > :28:23.target time on lap three. Hamilton, who has just started his run, that

:28:24. > :28:29.lap was 20.5, but the next lap might be onto the target of 19.8.

:28:30. > :28:35.Sebastian Vettel putting in a longer run of laps together. Great view in

:28:36. > :28:42.the background as Vettel beginning to use a little bit more of the

:28:43. > :28:50.available space now. A corner where he lost the lead to Jenson Button in

:28:51. > :28:55.that famous 2011 race. He just went a bit too wide and Jenson Button

:28:56. > :29:00.came through to win the race from being last. It was one of the most

:29:01. > :29:06.remarkable races. It proved to be the longest, now they have added in

:29:07. > :29:10.a four hour time limit to a grand prix. I think it will remain that

:29:11. > :29:13.way. Even Sebastian Vettel finding that getting these tyres to work and

:29:14. > :29:16.under braking is proving to be difficult. Not straight forward or

:29:17. > :29:25.Sebastian difficult. Not straight forward or

:29:26. > :29:34.your comments, Sonny Patel Askin do you think Alonso could get his

:29:35. > :29:38.second podium of the year at Canada? There is a chance he will end this

:29:39. > :29:53.session fast is because they have used the fastest of their tyres.

:29:54. > :30:00.TEAM RADIO: it is not very grippy at the moment, very low grip. The team

:30:01. > :30:07.talking to Adrian Sutil saying, make your mind up, what will we do? You

:30:08. > :30:11.could turn the corner and be in the water, was the message. What about

:30:12. > :30:15.Alonso, are we encouraged by his pace? I am going to reserve

:30:16. > :30:21.judgement is, I want to see people on the super-soft with tired pen --

:30:22. > :30:26.temperature and see what they are capable of. He was fastest in the

:30:27. > :30:30.second Pratt this session in Monaco. Just a couple of weeks ago. When it

:30:31. > :30:34.turned into qualifying he qualified fifth on the grid. But there is a

:30:35. > :30:40.chance he could be leading those behind Mercedes. Perhaps there is an

:30:41. > :30:52.opportunity for him to get on the podium.

:30:53. > :30:58.Pushing to the outer edge here. A slight block there.

:30:59. > :31:12.He is still fourth fastest in the session. Alonso fastest. Bottas is

:31:13. > :31:19.this. Daniel Riccardo had to bow out of the last chicane. He is down in

:31:20. > :31:23.11th place. Maybe he hasn't been able to put a lap together. You can

:31:24. > :31:29.see how much kerb he was using on the inside and the exit. Look at

:31:30. > :31:32.that, my goodness! That was incredibly accurate. Just

:31:33. > :31:37.millimetres away from the wall. That is what it takes to be quick here.

:31:38. > :31:49.Just need to lop those top branches off so we can see from the aerial.

:31:50. > :31:56.Max Chilton is 20th. Bianchi's his car -- Bianchi, his car is still in

:31:57. > :32:01.the pits. RADIO: charge the car, press reverse. You can do another

:32:02. > :32:05.lap at speed. The bit of traffic ahead coming of got a good gap

:32:06. > :32:08.behind. Making sure all the electrical

:32:09. > :32:14.systems are fully up to charge before putting in another quick lap.

:32:15. > :32:24.Hamilton, 1.20.9. Whether he got a bit of traffic. A bit more speed to

:32:25. > :32:29.be found. Watching Kevin Magnussen. A good start for his first

:32:30. > :32:32.be found. Watching Kevin Magnussen. in Canada. Lap time very competitive

:32:33. > :32:37.without of Jenson Button. These type of tracks where it is all about

:32:38. > :32:40.late-breaking. A lot of these youngsters coming up through the

:32:41. > :32:45.junior ranks. Really develop the art early on. He got it a little bit

:32:46. > :32:50.wrong. Had to use the escape road. Not getting it quite perfect for top

:32:51. > :32:53.Ron Dennis keeping a watchful eye on the progress of Kevin Magnussen who

:32:54. > :32:57.made that brilliant debut in Melbourne, but has just found life a

:32:58. > :33:01.bit more difficult, but so has Jenson Button. The car hasn't been

:33:02. > :33:06.there for them. Melbourne was a circuit little bit

:33:07. > :33:15.like this one. A huge variety of klaxons, the car hasn't been so

:33:16. > :33:20.well-suited to stop --. Track where the downforce is king,

:33:21. > :33:23.their Red Bull love, but McLaren struggle on those kind of circuits

:33:24. > :33:30.this year. Fernando Alonso building up to a lap by the looks of things.

:33:31. > :33:34.Fastest in the session so far. Down towards the first corner. Pops it

:33:35. > :33:40.over the inside kerb, a massive amount of Ferrari support here. Huge

:33:41. > :33:46.numbers of Ferrari fans. They will be cheering their man on.

:33:47. > :33:50.Great stuff, really beginning to attack the kerbs, as we saw earlier

:33:51. > :33:53.on. You can also see how easy it is to put a wheel on the grass on the

:33:54. > :34:01.approach to some of these corners and the exit as well.

:34:02. > :34:06.Runs close to the white line bringing it up towards the bridge

:34:07. > :34:10.and ten eight. That is where we have seen one or two people put a wheel

:34:11. > :34:15.on the grass, no such problems for Alonso. Hard on the power of the

:34:16. > :34:17.exit, sweeping round now towards the hairpin. Split times looking

:34:18. > :34:26.reasonable, Magnussen has just improved. Still behind Jenson

:34:27. > :34:31.Button. Alonso, not his personal best sector times, a reasonably good

:34:32. > :34:35.lap this. Let's see how it completes, the tyres have done 20

:34:36. > :34:40.laps. You will not see the fastest lap of the day here, but he has just

:34:41. > :34:44.had to bail out of the last corner, what a shame. Not able to see what

:34:45. > :34:52.the ultimate lap time would be. I don't think it would have been any

:34:53. > :34:55.quicker than his existing best. It looks as though it is end of

:34:56. > :34:59.session for Lewis Hamilton as the clock ticks away and we are

:35:00. > :35:04.preparing for the chequered flag to come out. He hasn't ended the

:35:05. > :35:09.session fastest, of fraction slower than Fernando Alonso. Our Mercedes

:35:10. > :35:18.keeping something in reserve as we have seen on several occasions cost

:35:19. > :35:25.Mark --? Adrian Sutil, ran wide. No problems,

:35:26. > :35:31.just get onto the correct line. Throwing away a chance of putting in

:35:32. > :35:34.a quick lap. The chequered flag is out, the last few laps are being

:35:35. > :35:37.completed full the last few laps are being completed. Was Burke on

:35:38. > :35:43.circuit, he will end third fastest for Mercedes stopped Sebastian

:35:44. > :35:47.Vettel, fourth fastest. Riccardo improving a little bit towards the

:35:48. > :35:57.end. He is eighth quickest. He has just improved again. Sixth quickest.

:35:58. > :36:01.1:18 .4. Alonso struggling a bit for grip on these tyres. He has used

:36:02. > :36:10.these tyres to their absolute map Sumann. -- maximum. Lewis Hamilton

:36:11. > :36:15.did 25 laps, Sebastian Vettel the 28. Certainly an oppressive run for

:36:16. > :36:19.Fernando Alonso to go faster than the Mercedes on this occasion. His

:36:20. > :36:23.team-mate Kimi Raikonnen was in ninth place and Jean-Eric Vergne
