:00:00. > :01:09.Good morning and welcome to Monza. As you can see it is a glorious day

:01:10. > :01:14.in Italy. We are just outside Milan and it is always great to be here at

:01:15. > :01:19.such an iconic circuit. The tifosi are here in their thousands to cheer

:01:20. > :01:22.on their beloved Ferrari. As well as all the on track action we will be

:01:23. > :01:28.live for 30 minutes after the chequered flag falls with drivers

:01:29. > :01:31.passed, and present, and all the news coming out of Mercedes and

:01:32. > :01:36.rumours of changes right at the top of Ferrari. Since Spa headlines have

:01:37. > :01:40.been dominated by Mercedes after Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton came

:01:41. > :01:45.together. Whether you think Nico Rosberg was the good guy or the bad

:01:46. > :01:50.guy, he was the one standing on the podium and increasing his lead in

:01:51. > :01:54.the Drivers' Championship. Now 29 points separate him and Lewis

:01:55. > :01:58.Hamilton. Daniel Ricciardo has three wins to his name which means he is

:01:59. > :02:03.just 35 points behind Hamilton. Fernando Alonso is fourth, Bottas

:02:04. > :02:09.fifth, Sebastian Vettel is yet to lead a race this year let alone win

:02:10. > :02:15.one. In the constructors Mercedes have a huge lead, 411 points.

:02:16. > :02:19.Williams are fighting to take third place from Ferrari. McLaren have

:02:20. > :02:26.moved ahead of Force India since the last race but only by two points.

:02:27. > :02:30.Standing in a sunny pit lane today, Tom Clarkson and Jenny Gunn. It is

:02:31. > :02:34.not sunny where we are standing actually, we are in the shade. But

:02:35. > :02:38.you are right, it is a balmy 23 degrees down here. For the teams, it

:02:39. > :02:45.is the track temperatures they are concerned with, which is now 31

:02:46. > :02:48.degrees, nearly 10 degrees more than yesterday, so we could see the rear

:02:49. > :02:54.tyres being worked harder, so we could see more oversteer. Visually

:02:55. > :02:58.it could be quite good for us. But the emphasis this morning will be on

:02:59. > :03:01.qualifying. 11 times in the last 14 years this race has been won from

:03:02. > :03:04.pole position which makes it statistically more important to

:03:05. > :03:10.start than Monaco from pole position. Lewis Hamilton only

:03:11. > :03:14.managed to 16 laps yesterday afternoon, he had a problem, they

:03:15. > :03:19.could not fire up his engine. And that was the engine they used in

:03:20. > :03:23.Hungary which caught fire, so they managed to repair it. It is a Friday

:03:24. > :03:28.engine, he will not be using that today. He will have to use his

:03:29. > :03:36.team-mate Nico Rosberg 's macro information to get the best of his

:03:37. > :03:41.car. He says that is the -- that is fine, they have similar cars. He set

:03:42. > :03:45.the fastest time of the whole day on the hard tyres yesterday, which is

:03:46. > :03:49.pretty unusual. He will try his best to gain the time he missed out on

:03:50. > :03:53.yesterday, preparing himself for the all-important qualifying. It is in

:03:54. > :03:56.fact all-important because Lewis Hamilton has not had a clean

:03:57. > :04:00.qualifying session since Spain and that was all the way back at the

:04:01. > :04:05.beginning of May, it is incredible. He will need a clean practice three.

:04:06. > :04:11.The cars are on track shortly, so let's head to the commentary booth.

:04:12. > :04:14.COMMENTATOR: Thank you, we have a lot to look forward to today.

:04:15. > :04:19.Although we talk about the rivalry between Hamilton and Rosberg, there

:04:20. > :04:22.is an opportunity for somebody else. Williams looked strong and they may

:04:23. > :04:27.not qualify quite as sharply as they did in Austria, but we need to keep

:04:28. > :04:29.an eye on them. Their long run pace is very good and they were the

:04:30. > :04:35.quickest car yesterday intends of race pace. The key for them is being

:04:36. > :04:44.in the fight in qualifying. We have seen them much better in that area

:04:45. > :04:53.through the last few Grands Prix. Red Bull need to be good. They have

:04:54. > :05:00.resurfaced the banked surface with concrete to keep it alive. We will

:05:01. > :05:03.see some interesting images from that on the BBC Formula One coverage

:05:04. > :05:07.over the course of the weekend. Stay with us for all the qualifying life

:05:08. > :05:14.and the full race coverage on BBC One. First practice of the day,

:05:15. > :05:17.practice three of the weekend, and one apiece for Lewis Hamilton and

:05:18. > :05:21.Nico Rosberg in terms of topping the times so far this weekend. But Lewis

:05:22. > :05:26.did have that truncated session and ended up second fastest in second

:05:27. > :05:29.practice yesterday. Kimi Raikkonen having a slightly stronger weekend

:05:30. > :05:32.so far, and generally Ferrari have been looking better than they have

:05:33. > :05:37.at some previous events. Raikkonen was third and Alonzo was fourth in

:05:38. > :05:40.yesterday afternoon 's session. Rumours that they have improved

:05:41. > :05:46.their power plant a bit, got a bit more performance. There are four

:05:47. > :05:50.straights where you are over 200 mph here, so you need straight-line

:05:51. > :05:54.speed and power. They have been a little bit more competitive so far.

:05:55. > :06:00.Kimi Raikkonen, especially since Spa, when he seemed to find his feet

:06:01. > :06:04.with this, and looks stronger in comparison to Fernando Alonso this

:06:05. > :06:06.weekend. Always wonderful to see the cars out for the morning session

:06:07. > :06:11.with light dappling through the trees. That is such a part of racing

:06:12. > :06:15.at Monza, trees everywhere. It is part of a massive park, huge area,

:06:16. > :06:20.something like three times the land area of Monaco. And we are just in

:06:21. > :06:26.one tiny corner of this part. It is a beautiful area. When you come up

:06:27. > :06:29.into Ascari chicane, the shadows of the trees blocked out the braking

:06:30. > :06:34.area and the bumps coming up into it, so you have to be careful. The

:06:35. > :06:38.rear of the car can easily lock-up and destabilise. We saw that with

:06:39. > :06:41.Sergio Perez yesterday morning and Friday when he locked the rear

:06:42. > :06:47.wheels coming in. Shadows create that extra problem. Well, there is

:06:48. > :06:51.Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari. Jenny, any news coming from the

:06:52. > :06:56.Italian team? Absolutely. As the guys at the back of the carpet ready

:06:57. > :07:01.to put that right flow is paint all over the car, the news is they have

:07:02. > :07:06.played their joke and Ferrari, so both cars have changed their gear

:07:07. > :07:10.ratios especially for Monza. There was some question as to whether they

:07:11. > :07:14.had done it for Spa, but they have done it for this weekend. We thought

:07:15. > :07:17.this might be one of them because it is such a fast paced circuit, so

:07:18. > :07:22.that's exactly what they have done. Good information. This year they are

:07:23. > :07:28.allowed to change ratios just a couple of times. It is a fixed ratio

:07:29. > :07:31.gearbox nowadays. In the old days and in other forms of racing you can

:07:32. > :07:37.change your ratio for each particular track. Daniil Kvyat, as

:07:38. > :07:41.you can see from the graphic, is now on to his six engine, which means he

:07:42. > :07:45.will have a ten place penalty on the grid for the race tomorrow. He will

:07:46. > :07:50.go through qualifying as tomorrow but whatever he qualifies in, ten

:07:51. > :07:55.prizes will be added. Back to gear ratios, you have been studying it?

:07:56. > :07:59.Yesterday when I was watching the on-board, Mercedes were only using a

:08:00. > :08:04.skier once per lap down the main street, whereas pretty much

:08:05. > :08:20.everybody else was using a skier three to four times per lap. -- they

:08:21. > :08:25.were only using Aix gear -- eighth gear. There is no clear logic in

:08:26. > :08:30.exactly why Mercedes are doing it at the moment. It means they change

:08:31. > :08:34.here less, so from that point of view, they are going up and down the

:08:35. > :08:37.gearbox less, so it might be a real liability thing. In terms of

:08:38. > :08:44.performance it does not seem to be an advantage. Are they ending up

:08:45. > :08:48.with different ratios, so Williams and Mercedes and Force India are not

:08:49. > :08:51.all doing the same thing? Force India seem to have slightly longer

:08:52. > :08:56.ratios, more in line with Mercedes but all of the other teams in to

:08:57. > :08:59.have the shorter ratio. It is one of those things, variables. Different

:09:00. > :09:05.philosophies, different theories behind it. But it is a clear, clear

:09:06. > :09:09.difference. On the start finish great, Rosberg going down the pit

:09:10. > :09:11.lane, you will change to his final eighth gear right at the end of the

:09:12. > :09:16.pit lane, whereas the other teams are right at the beginning, quite a

:09:17. > :09:20.difference. Right now he is using first gear, doing the practice start

:09:21. > :09:26.in the designated area at the end of the pit lane, here. Clutch bite

:09:27. > :09:31.point check, making sure it is all activated. You did not make a

:09:32. > :09:37.particularly good start from pole position in some ways last time out

:09:38. > :09:43.at Spa -- he did not. And that poor start initiated the events that led

:09:44. > :09:49.to him clipping Hamilton. The poor start was the total reason. He was

:09:50. > :09:54.on pole. That's strange. He locked up the front right. He has done the

:09:55. > :10:00.practice start and instead of flash spot in the tyre, we saw Jenson

:10:01. > :10:04.Button doing a big one yesterday, instead of flat spotting the tyre

:10:05. > :10:10.and damaging them with 55 minutes ago, better to abort. Is this a bit

:10:11. > :10:14.of an experiment for him? If he is on the front row tomorrow, did not

:10:15. > :10:21.looked like he was hammering it down there, one of the hardest things for

:10:22. > :10:26.the guys to judge is where to break, first lap, tyre is not fully a full

:10:27. > :10:33.load of fuel, one of the toughest decisions of the whole weekend.

:10:34. > :10:37.RADIO: A slight delta on the temperature, more braking to get

:10:38. > :10:44.them up. That will be the reason he locked the front. The difference in

:10:45. > :10:47.temperature of side to side. One will be more efficient until the

:10:48. > :10:52.whole car is up to temperature. The right front would be the one that

:10:53. > :10:56.had more temperature into it causing that, on a slightly cold surface.

:10:57. > :11:07.Coming back to it, it is very difficult, it was a problem in Spa.

:11:08. > :11:11.RADIO: We will look into that. Should be fine, but we will check

:11:12. > :11:19.that out. It feels pretty bad, to be honest. Long and soft. That is not

:11:20. > :11:24.what you want, because you are breaking just under the bridge into

:11:25. > :11:27.Ascari. You need a solid feel and solid feedback, because these

:11:28. > :11:32.braking areas are very short but very intense, pulling over five G,

:11:33. > :11:37.putting 120 kilograms of force into it. The feedback through the foot is

:11:38. > :11:40.something that is very critical and something I was always very

:11:41. > :11:45.particular about. Clearly Kevin Magnussen has that sensation as

:11:46. > :11:48.well. So it looks like years staying out there, but it is something they

:11:49. > :11:54.will address presumably. -- looks like he is. It would normally be a

:11:55. > :12:00.question of bleeding the breaks, but these days it is a bit more, dated.

:12:01. > :12:07.I guess it is to do with the hydraulic system. Yes, as he locks

:12:08. > :12:13.up the front right, exactly as Nico Rosberg did. It is more on the

:12:14. > :12:16.hydraulics side of things. Generally you plug it into a system that will

:12:17. > :12:21.push all of the fluid completely through. You want to get the old

:12:22. > :12:25.fluid out in case there is something with the fluid as well. Seems a bit

:12:26. > :12:30.slippery at the first chicane, doesn't it? Talk us through this as

:12:31. > :12:33.he came down. He has gone down through the gears, down to third

:12:34. > :12:38.gear, and at that point he locked up the right front. I think we will see

:12:39. > :12:43.lots of it, into the chicane and second chicane more than anywhere

:12:44. > :12:48.else. Those two corners you have big, heavy braking. Both corners a

:12:49. > :12:52.little bit bumpy. The problem is that you do not realise you are

:12:53. > :12:55.going too fast, and you break later and your deceleration is not quite

:12:56. > :13:02.good enough until you are at the point of turning. RADIO: The gears

:13:03. > :13:08.are still not right. Box, box, box, just reduce the amount of shifting.

:13:09. > :13:11.Little bit of discussion about the gears on the Mercedes of Nico

:13:12. > :13:16.Rosberg. Just riding with Jenson Button. Kobayashi currently fastest,

:13:17. > :13:35.not often we see a caterer at the top, and now it is the other one --

:13:36. > :13:38.a Cape -- Caterham. Now Alan, you have done a special piece for our

:13:39. > :13:48.coverage later today about the changes at Parabolica, how did

:13:49. > :14:00.Button's line look? He was on the tarmac site. Luca arrived with his

:14:01. > :14:08.son in tow, maybe a future Ferrari driver. Jensen, still a fast time,

:14:09. > :14:12.eight tenths off the quickest we had yesterday in second free practice.

:14:13. > :14:17.Ultimately I still think this is build-up from Jenson Button. So,

:14:18. > :14:22.crossed the line goes Nico Hulkenberg now to go on to go onto a

:14:23. > :14:26.quick lap. Jenson Button is fastest from Kirby Ashy, Ericsson and

:14:27. > :14:32.Magnusson, and again, Hulkenberg does not lock-up quite as much.

:14:33. > :14:38.RADIO: Bit more break warming if you can, mate. Tyres look good. The

:14:39. > :14:42.issue you have around here, such long straights, everything cools

:14:43. > :14:48.down. And then you have an intense activity when you hit the brakes. If

:14:49. > :14:52.they are not at the optimum, 200 mph, where Hulkenberg was at that

:14:53. > :14:56.speed coming into the second chicane, he is doing 90 metres per

:14:57. > :14:59.second. So therefore it is all concertinas about one of braking and

:15:00. > :15:05.everything has be at the optimum level. Alternatively you get these

:15:06. > :15:08.little lock-ups and run wide. This is something we will see in the

:15:09. > :15:12.first part of the session as opposed to the second part. Hulkenberg on a

:15:13. > :15:14.reasonably good lap here at the moment, so we will keep an eye on

:15:15. > :15:24.that. You can share your thoughts with us

:15:25. > :15:27.by tweeting us or commenting on the BBC Facebook page. We have the

:15:28. > :15:31.Formula One website as well. So the best of your comments will be added

:15:32. > :15:35.to that. It is good to have your contribution as we build up towards

:15:36. > :15:43.qualifying here at Monza and it is live coverage on BBC One at 12. 10.

:15:44. > :15:47.Join Suzi and the gang and looking over the controversies of the last

:15:48. > :15:51.race at Spa. The contact between Hamilton and Rosberg which has been

:15:52. > :15:55.talked about ever since. Button still fastest here. Hulkenberg with

:15:56. > :15:59.that lap going second fastest and that man there is the guy who is the

:16:00. > :16:04.engineer for Sergio Perez, but next year will be Sebastian Vettel's race

:16:05. > :16:11.engineer. So a shift from team and he will be working with the four

:16:12. > :16:15.time world champion. Vettel's engineer will be having a more

:16:16. > :16:20.overall engineering role at Red Bull. He will be stepping out of his

:16:21. > :16:23.current position where he has been active and sin on news with

:16:24. > :16:30.Sebastian Vettel and the success there into a bigger position. This

:16:31. > :16:33.is all part of the restructuring after Adrian Newey. This is the

:16:34. > :16:36.first race where he has not been directly active into the Red Bull

:16:37. > :16:42.and they have to build for the rue ture and Rocky is a -- future and

:16:43. > :16:47.Rocky is a big asset and they will want to move him up the ladder. He

:16:48. > :16:52.was the engineer of Paul di Resta last year and Paul was a big, big

:16:53. > :17:02.fan and says he is without doubt able to step into Rocky's shoes.

:17:03. > :17:07.Adrian Newey won't be attending anymore Grand Prix this year. It

:17:08. > :17:11.will be a new era for the team and Sebastian Vettel, of course,

:17:12. > :17:17.struggling a bit. He is in a chassis, it is not a brand-new

:17:18. > :17:21.chassis, it is one that's been recycled effectively and it is a

:17:22. > :17:30.different chassis to the one he ran at Spa. Button has gone faster on

:17:31. > :17:34.that initial time he did. Vettel on this lap will keep an eye on. It

:17:35. > :17:41.will be close in qualifying today and fractions of a second separating

:17:42. > :17:46.the likes of Red Bull and Ferrari and maybe McLaren. Over the race

:17:47. > :17:50.distance, Red Bull and Ferrari are looking stronger than McLaren, but

:17:51. > :17:53.very, very even. So we could see Vettel versus Alonso again and they

:17:54. > :18:02.have had their moments here in the past. Remember a couple of times

:18:03. > :18:10.when Alonso made a fantastic move on Vettel. Vettel made a fantastic move

:18:11. > :18:15.on Alonso and Vettel got done when he squeezed Alonso on to the grass.

:18:16. > :18:20.It is difficult to overtake around here even though the straights are

:18:21. > :18:24.very long and normally you would expect, it is reasonably simple in

:18:25. > :18:28.that respect, but it is hard. Therefore, qualifying will be

:18:29. > :18:30.important and that gaggle in behind, to be honest including Mercedes in

:18:31. > :18:36.the way that it looked yesterday, it is going to be tight and I think

:18:37. > :18:43.qualifying will be a big, big factor today. There is important people

:18:44. > :18:50.from Ferrari today. We look at Kobayashi. A classic lock-up and

:18:51. > :18:58.rotation. Did he save it from spinning? Bounced across the big

:18:59. > :19:08.sausage kerb. A lot of sparks. The car running low. It doesn't run over

:19:09. > :19:17.the kerb too much. That's the McLaren. Magnussen had a brake pedal

:19:18. > :19:26.that was too long and they have had to take the callipers off. You would

:19:27. > :19:34.want to do a belt and braces approach on that if you weren't 100%

:19:35. > :19:40.sure because once you go into qualifying, Ricciardo gets on to the

:19:41. > :19:46.dirty side and loses rear grip. Another new graphic giving us a

:19:47. > :19:50.corner time from entry to exit, 3.8 seconds corner time. Many years, you

:19:51. > :19:54.have done a lot of driver coaching as well, Allan, it makes a big

:19:55. > :19:59.difference, doesn't it to analyse what people are doing? Yes, it

:20:00. > :20:02.certainly does. It is a part of the process of trying to understand

:20:03. > :20:07.where you are actually gaining and losing, what's the important part is

:20:08. > :20:10.that the middle is the exit is at the entry and to maximise all of

:20:11. > :20:15.that and data and information is king in this game. A few more times

:20:16. > :20:18.on the board now. It is Button fastest. Ricciardo is second.

:20:19. > :20:23.Hulkenberg is pushed down to third and Vettel is fourth and Perez is

:20:24. > :20:26.fifth. It is McLaren on top and Red Bull looking strong, but we haven't

:20:27. > :20:33.seen the real potential pace set efforts. Ters. One is Valtteri

:20:34. > :20:37.Bottas and he is on a lap now. Let's watch the lap. Drops down to first

:20:38. > :20:52.gear. Some of the teams are quickly into second because he wants to try

:20:53. > :21:00.to maximise his acceleration. In through the second chicane. This one

:21:01. > :21:07.is tricky. You use all of that kerb on the exit. So through there. Runs

:21:08. > :21:13.out wide. I noticed that yesterday. He uses a fair bit of road. A chunk

:21:14. > :21:20.of oversteer. It is a funny corner because you get a corn in oversteer

:21:21. > :21:25.on entry and then you have got to spot the apex. There is certain

:21:26. > :21:34.areas where the FIA said it is OK to run with all four wheels off.

:21:35. > :21:38.However at Parabolica where he is coming to now, they have dictated if

:21:39. > :21:43.you put all four wheels over the white line then you are in line for

:21:44. > :21:46.a penalty. A touch of tyre lock on the right front. Let's see how much

:21:47. > :21:52.road he uses? That would have been gravel last year, but he keeps it

:21:53. > :21:56.within just about. He goes second fastest with that lap. Not as quick

:21:57. > :22:10.as the McLaren though of Jenson Button.

:22:11. > :22:13.TEAM RADIO: Gears are not learning. Cancel brain magic. It is a

:22:14. > :22:17.wonderful language we're hearing in Formula One. Talking of engineers

:22:18. > :22:22.talking to drivers. Tom, we have a feature that you made with Valtteri

:22:23. > :22:25.Bottas coming up later. Where Valtteri Bottas engaged in a

:22:26. > :22:30.different occupation, but still being talked at by his race

:22:31. > :22:34.engineer? That's right, they have got an interesting history these two

:22:35. > :22:38.guys. They graduated to the Formula One team together in effect.

:22:39. > :22:43.Jonathan became a race engineer for the first time last year as Valtteri

:22:44. > :22:47.was promoted to the race team. So yes, nice feature with that, but I

:22:48. > :22:51.caught up with Valtteri after practise yesterday and very quietly

:22:52. > :22:57.confident of the car's long run pace. I said to him, "How does it

:22:58. > :23:01.look?" He says we're aiming for the podium this weekend, it is just a

:23:02. > :23:05.question of which step! That's good to hear. There is that confidence to

:23:06. > :23:11.Valtteri Bottas now he had a string of podiums, can he go better and

:23:12. > :23:15.take his first win? It might be asking too much. Who knows. Red Bull

:23:16. > :23:18.have managed to win against Mercedes. But the thing they have to

:23:19. > :23:23.do is convert the opportunities and that's something that Red Bull have

:23:24. > :23:27.done very well with Daniel Ricciardo when they have a sniff of a victory

:23:28. > :23:33.then they have grabbed it with both hands. Williams had the faster car,

:23:34. > :23:37.but haven't been able to maximise their performance from it. Here, I

:23:38. > :23:41.think, is their best chance. I think they have got a good bit of speed in

:23:42. > :23:44.the car for qualifying and they have in the race pace as well. I think

:23:45. > :23:49.around here they really have to look towards not just a podium step, but

:23:50. > :23:53.something higher than that. We're watching Kimi Raikkonen. He was

:23:54. > :23:57.third fastest yesterday. More promising for Ferrari, but we are

:23:58. > :24:01.wary. They show well on Fridays and don't always deliver when it comes

:24:02. > :24:07.to Saturday qualifying and Raikkonen coming off that fourth place finish

:24:08. > :24:12.last time out at Spa, but the best grid position is fifth. He hasn't

:24:13. > :24:16.been on the first couple of rows this season and that was it Bahrain.

:24:17. > :24:21.It is a long time since Kimi Raikkonen had a pole position. That

:24:22. > :24:26.was in his first career in Formula One. You have to go back to 2008

:24:27. > :24:30.when he had a pole position and that was at the French Grand Prix and I

:24:31. > :24:32.don't Ferrari will be in the battle for pole position, but they will

:24:33. > :24:36.have the support of the crowd. Let's see what the lap is like. It is a

:24:37. > :24:41.slow lap. I think he has a lot of fuel on board and everybody is still

:24:42. > :24:45.using the hard tyre, Allan. What we did see yesterday when they switched

:24:46. > :24:48.to the softer tyre which we will see later in the session, not quite as

:24:49. > :24:52.big a difference. Sometimes we see between the two tyres and that's

:24:53. > :24:57.partly there is not as many corners here at Monza, but we saw as

:24:58. > :25:01.Valtteri Bottas goes fastest, you can do more than one quick lap and

:25:02. > :25:05.sometimes your second flying lap was quicker than your first. It is

:25:06. > :25:09.around here, I think, it is going to be about building the temperatures

:25:10. > :25:13.into the tyre and into the brakes. Valtteri Bottas there, he improved

:25:14. > :25:19.on the first sector. Equalled his second sector and on the third

:25:20. > :25:23.sector was slower. Therefore, his first timed lap today was not quite

:25:24. > :25:28.totally up to temperature and if he had been able to put those together

:25:29. > :25:31.on the one single lap, he would have been a tenth-and-a-half faster

:25:32. > :25:35.again. Valtteri Bottas quickest. Now Button is second fastest. Hulkenberg

:25:36. > :25:41.third. Massa fourth and Daniel Ricciardo is fifth and Tom, you are

:25:42. > :25:46.at Red Bull? I am, Ben. I wanted to highlight this beautiful front wing

:25:47. > :25:51.on the RB-10. It is naked. There are none of the add on flaps that we see

:25:52. > :25:56.elsewhere in the pit lane. We know that Red Bull are running even less

:25:57. > :26:00.rear wing here than in Spa two weeks ago and I suppose this is just to

:26:01. > :26:04.help balance the car by having less downforce on the front, but doesn't

:26:05. > :26:09.it look, the petals on a rose, just layered on top of each other. It is

:26:10. > :26:13.very beautiful and it is helping their straight line speed. They did

:26:14. > :26:17.run a similar wing last year and when I asked the team why they ran

:26:18. > :26:23.it last year because, of course, there was more engine parity and

:26:24. > :26:28.they said we were only 30 BHP down last year. Listening to that is

:26:29. > :26:34.Christian Horner. The car does look great with all the little add on

:26:35. > :26:40.winglets? I was listening to his description of petals of a rose! It

:26:41. > :26:44.is very descriptive from Tom there. We are trimming as much wing out of

:26:45. > :26:48.the car as we can to make it as efficient on the straights as we

:26:49. > :26:53.can. You guys do a lot of number crunching overnight. Not only in

:26:54. > :26:56.terms of how your car is set-up, but where everybody stands. What can we

:26:57. > :27:02.expect to see in qualifying and indeed, the race? What you can see

:27:03. > :27:08.is that the times are close and a tenth of a second can be moving you

:27:09. > :27:13.three or four places. So I'm looking at the theoretical times here and

:27:14. > :27:18.massively, massively close between the top six or eight cars. It will

:27:19. > :27:25.be very tight. It is about getting the perfect lap in qualifying. And

:27:26. > :27:33.that includes Mercedes, does it? They leave a bit up their sleeve.

:27:34. > :27:42.I'm looking at the Williams, McLarens, they are all Mercedes

:27:43. > :27:46.engines. At Allan here. Looking at yesterday's race pace times, you

:27:47. > :27:49.looked as if you were one of the quickest, but do you have the

:27:50. > :27:54.qualifying pace to utilise that for tomorrow? That's that, Allan. Our

:27:55. > :27:59.race pace looks pretty good, but the problem is it is likely to be a one

:28:00. > :28:03.stop race and that means you have got to do your overtaking on track

:28:04. > :28:06.and with our lack of straight line speed that will be tough. If we can

:28:07. > :28:12.get a car on the third row that would be a good starting position

:28:13. > :28:18.for us and I don't think Daniel won a race from higher than fifth or

:28:19. > :28:23.sixth yet. With the hybrid engines we are using now and it is the first

:28:24. > :28:28.time we have come to Monza with this set-up on the car. Will it change

:28:29. > :28:32.how the drivers go through the qualifying routine? They have got to

:28:33. > :28:36.be careful in terms of how much, you know, they utilise if they are doing

:28:37. > :28:40.consecutive laps. There is a little bit of management in that and you

:28:41. > :28:44.will hear the engineers talking to them about what modes and recharge

:28:45. > :28:50.modes that they need to be in. So power management is critical on a

:28:51. > :28:54.track like this. And presumably with the tyres that we are seeing, we saw

:28:55. > :28:57.people being able to set a second fast lap on the medium tyre

:28:58. > :29:01.yesterday afternoon. Maybe people are staying out there longer in

:29:02. > :29:06.qualifying and doing a couple of laps? The tyres are hard enough to

:29:07. > :29:09.drive home on. So I think, you know, the times will keep falling. You can

:29:10. > :29:14.see on this harder tyre at the moment, you know, cars are

:29:15. > :29:20.continuing to go quicker and quicker and the softer tyre is not much

:29:21. > :29:23.softer, you know, so again, long runs are no problem. One final

:29:24. > :29:31.question. We have seen Daniil Kvyat... That's good. He loves a bit

:29:32. > :29:35.of oversteer! It is good to watch. Jean-Eric Vergne showing how the

:29:36. > :29:39.tyres are not that easy to drive. A quick general question. There has

:29:40. > :29:42.been rumours, it is always that time of year, Monza, the drivers market

:29:43. > :29:45.is always being talked about. You look set with what you have got in

:29:46. > :29:49.terms of Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel. I know there are

:29:50. > :29:53.rumours surrounding Sebastian's future. Do you see any high-profile

:29:54. > :29:57.changes taking place as we go through the rest of the year? As you

:29:58. > :30:02.say, the music is always in full swing this time of year, but when it

:30:03. > :30:06.stops I think they will all end up sticking in the seats they are in

:30:07. > :30:10.and amongst the top teams I suspect. I would be surprised if there was

:30:11. > :30:13.any real movement. OK, great, thank you for joining us. We look forward

:30:14. > :30:18.to some input later on today? Thank you.

:30:19. > :30:23.Big snap from Jean-Eric Vergne with the back of the car, we saw Sergio

:30:24. > :30:27.Perez have a similar issue yesterday. It just gives us an idea

:30:28. > :30:32.of getting that brake balance, which is so crucial here. Running uphill

:30:33. > :30:37.into there, a lot of breaking load, so the rear of the car is quite

:30:38. > :30:40.light anyway. Bit of a bump and the road camber is in towards the

:30:41. > :30:45.right-hand side. So it's not as though when it does react it is

:30:46. > :30:53.reacting identically left and right, so you tend to get a bit of a snap.

:30:54. > :30:56.Kimi had won a bit like Bottas early in the session, dropped his front

:30:57. > :31:07.right wheel into the drain and it hooked him an idiot. Kevin Magnussen

:31:08. > :31:12.had some break issues. Any news? Not on Magnusson, but Nico Rosberg is

:31:13. > :31:17.out of the car with a gearbox issue. The flaw is coming off the car, the

:31:18. > :31:20.team on getting into the gearbox. They think if they can get into it

:31:21. > :31:25.now they might not have to replace the gearbox. So session over for

:31:26. > :31:28.him. Makes you wonder, Lewis Hamilton missed an hour of yesterday

:31:29. > :31:33.afternoon session, Rosberg has effectively missed an hour this

:31:34. > :31:37.morning. Who will suffer more, missing yesterday afternoon or this

:31:38. > :31:40.morning? They are missing different things, because Rosberg got all of

:31:41. > :31:45.the driving feel, and the setup time for the long run pace, and Lewis

:31:46. > :31:51.Hamilton missed out on that for really Sunday afternoon, whereas it

:31:52. > :31:55.looks like the other way round. Personally I would prefer to be in

:31:56. > :31:58.Lewis Hamilton's situation, because I think psychologically having the

:31:59. > :32:01.advantage going into and through qualifying is probably more

:32:02. > :32:08.important right now for him after the run of, I would say, races he

:32:09. > :32:11.has had, more than anything else. Interesting, Lewis Hamilton did not

:32:12. > :32:16.finish last time out so he is allowed a new gearbox. So he is less

:32:17. > :32:21.likely to have a problem. Jenny has some news from McLaren? Yes, be

:32:22. > :32:25.wheel guns are out and they have put the tyres on Kevin Magnussen's car,

:32:26. > :32:30.it was the front brakes he was not comfortable with. He has only put

:32:31. > :32:36.into laps, Sue he came in and they changed the material -- so he came

:32:37. > :32:40.in. Hopefully he will feel more comfortable now. But a long time to

:32:41. > :32:43.miss out on this session. Interesting to know if you changed

:32:44. > :32:48.to the same material that he had on before, because that sensitivity to

:32:49. > :32:53.the brake pedal, especially around here, sometimes they play with

:32:54. > :32:56.materials. We found out in Hockenheim Lewis Hamilton was doing

:32:57. > :33:01.that quite a lot when he had his brake disk failure in qualifying. I

:33:02. > :33:08.did ask the question, as you know I would, and I got resolute no

:33:09. > :33:11.comment. I did say what did they use, and he said normally carbon

:33:12. > :33:20.industry, but they change them round. So I gave up at that point.

:33:21. > :33:25.The sensitivity and feedback in each one has got the characteristic. You

:33:26. > :33:31.prefer them from certain circuits to circuit, and sometimes driver to

:33:32. > :33:34.drive, but it is whether they need instant response or more consistency

:33:35. > :33:40.through the whole braking range. Valtteri Bottas still fastest with

:33:41. > :33:44.over half an hour to go in final practice. Fernando Alonso second

:33:45. > :33:47.fastest, and Christian Horner was saying it was going to be close, but

:33:48. > :33:52.it is mighty close, no difference at all between the lap Duff has done in

:33:53. > :34:02.a Williams-Mercedes and the one Fernando Alonso has done in the

:34:03. > :34:09.Ferrari -- between the lap Bottas has done. Hopefully Lewis Hamilton

:34:10. > :34:12.will give us an idea. Grosjean has been struggling and this car has

:34:13. > :34:18.looked a handful this weekend, they are struggling, even more than they

:34:19. > :34:22.have been at other circuits. In high downforce trim I don't think the car

:34:23. > :34:26.is very easy to drive, seems to be very difficult. Especially with any

:34:27. > :34:31.bumps or curbs, when you take downforce off. That's coming through

:34:32. > :34:37.the second Lesmo, down towards Parabolica. You can run out there,

:34:38. > :34:43.but it is very bumpy. Then you take downforce off, it amplifies these

:34:44. > :34:47.bumps, and the car reacts much more. Lotus have said they have stopped

:34:48. > :34:52.development for 2014 and are looking towards 2015. I think the drivers

:34:53. > :34:55.felt that happened two or three months ago in reality, because they

:34:56. > :35:02.have not been able to extract any more out of it than they had in

:35:03. > :35:06.Malaysia. Hulkenberg on another lap. Thanks for your questions and

:35:07. > :35:10.comments coming in. Quirky badger asks, good Ross Brawn return to

:35:11. > :35:14.Ferrari next season? That is amongst the gossip at Monza, but we wonder

:35:15. > :35:18.whether that's actually going to be a fact. He has done an awful lot in

:35:19. > :35:23.the past at Ferrari, but we don't know for sure yet whether he will

:35:24. > :35:28.return. James Bartlett saying, do we believe Jenson Button deserves next

:35:29. > :35:32.year 's drive, and does Magnusson deserve a second chance? Questions

:35:33. > :35:40.all about the McLaren driver line-up and it is still uncertain. McLaren

:35:41. > :35:48.in a situation. Peres is stopping. Curve grandee, just come through the

:35:49. > :35:54.chicane. RADIO: Do not change gear for the moment or try to change

:35:55. > :35:58.gear. Well he has just tried to do that, he is stuck in second gear,

:35:59. > :36:05.trying to go down, looks like it is in between two gears. He came out of

:36:06. > :36:09.the first chicane, and clearly when he tried to activate into the next

:36:10. > :36:12.year he stopped. I presume that now if they cannot move this car quickly

:36:13. > :36:19.they will have two red flag the session. They may try to push the

:36:20. > :36:22.car if it is in neutral. Interesting that two Mercedes engined cars have

:36:23. > :36:27.apparently had some gearbox problem. We don't know what the problem is on

:36:28. > :36:31.Peres, but worrying times for Force India, they will not want to lose

:36:32. > :36:36.the car at this stage. Marshal is trying to push it out of the way,

:36:37. > :36:38.there is a gap a bit further away. Hopefully they will be able to move

:36:39. > :36:45.that without stopping the entire session. So Sergio Perez, who has so

:36:46. > :36:48.far not done huge amount, he has done some ten laps in this session

:36:49. > :36:54.so far, and he is a fastest. Let's get some news from Jenny. The Sauber

:36:55. > :36:58.of Adrian Sutil in the sick bay at the moment, when he went out for his

:36:59. > :37:03.install that they found a hydraulic leak, so they have had to take it

:37:04. > :37:06.off. They have done a fast turnaround, Adrian Sutil getting

:37:07. > :37:09.ready in the background. Another five or ten minutes before he gets

:37:10. > :37:16.out, but another frustrating weekend, potentially in the bag. The

:37:17. > :37:22.macro. Indeed. -- potentially in the bag for Sauber. Certainly does not

:37:23. > :37:31.look easy for them, and also to Sergio Perez, he missed 30 minutes

:37:32. > :37:35.of Friday morning practice with Juncadella taking his position.

:37:36. > :37:41.Ultimately he has only done ten laps in this one. Now he is out with

:37:42. > :37:46.critically the last 30 minutes to go, which is his qualifying

:37:47. > :37:50.simulation. Coming back to McLaren, Button, Magnusson, any changes next

:37:51. > :37:53.year? McLaren are looking towards the future with their engine

:37:54. > :37:57.changing to Honda, they have to build a plan for the future. Kevin

:37:58. > :38:02.Magnussen has speed. He has had issues. And remember in the first

:38:03. > :38:05.Grand Prix of the season he had second place, so therefore he can do

:38:06. > :38:09.the job. I think he has done enough to continue. Jenson Button has

:38:10. > :38:13.scored the majority of the points, so he is the elder statesman on the

:38:14. > :38:19.grid. Ultimately he has got the points for McLaren Missy and that is

:38:20. > :38:24.very important when they need the stability, going into one big part

:38:25. > :38:28.of their team changing, the engine side -- the points for McLaren this

:38:29. > :38:33.year. I think they will be the drivers on the grid for the first

:38:34. > :38:36.race of 2015. Nico Rosberg looked cool, despite the fact he is losing

:38:37. > :38:40.track time in this session. There is Jenson Button. Another question has

:38:41. > :38:45.come in from Rachel Bridge, she says how come Jenson Button always shows

:38:46. > :38:53.great pace in free practice sessions but falls apart in qualifying? I'm

:38:54. > :38:58.not sure I would necessarily say he falls apart in qualifying, but the

:38:59. > :39:03.pace is not always converted into a challenging top ten in qualifying

:39:04. > :39:07.itself. I think Jenson Button's area of clear strength is in the race. He

:39:08. > :39:11.has a quick brain and he works out when there are opportunities,

:39:12. > :39:16.especially if a safety car or changing weather conditions arise.

:39:17. > :39:21.The area he has struggled a bit on in the past few years is the pure,

:39:22. > :39:24.outright one lap pace. But also McLaren does not build temperature

:39:25. > :39:29.very well into the front tyres, which is hampered, which hampers you

:39:30. > :39:35.in qualifying. I would not necessarily put it all down to

:39:36. > :39:42.Jenson's door, but his area of real strength in my opinion, is when he

:39:43. > :39:46.gets the 53 lap race. Finished second three times in the last five

:39:47. > :39:51.years, never had a race victory here, but some solid performances.

:39:52. > :39:59.Good battle with Fernando Alonso in 2010, nip and tuck. Alonso went on

:40:00. > :40:02.to snatch victory for Ferrari. He himself has a brilliant record of

:40:03. > :40:06.being on the podium every time since he has joined the Italian greats.

:40:07. > :40:10.Whether he will be able to do it this weekend we will see. Alonso

:40:11. > :40:14.showing good pace at the moment. With Jenson Button through the final

:40:15. > :40:18.corner. Lewis Hamilton is on a lap at the moment which should put him

:40:19. > :40:22.to the top of the times. Jenson Button currently fourth fastest and

:40:23. > :40:30.he goes fastest, but Lewis Hamilton is going to eclipse his time. RADIO:

:40:31. > :40:37.Misbehaving, you need to double-check it. I think he was

:40:38. > :40:41.talking about part of the energy recovery system that operates

:40:42. > :40:44.underbraking. Let's see what Hamilton's time is, a big jump

:40:45. > :40:49.faster, the fastest lap of the weekend. He is still on the harder

:40:50. > :40:52.compound tyre. Nobody has switched to the softer tyre yet, and that

:40:53. > :40:56.gives you an understanding that Mercedes still have the edge in

:40:57. > :41:02.terms of sheer pace. Definitely, and that's the first time they have

:41:03. > :41:06.dropped into the 25's, eclipsing his fastest time of yesterday which was

:41:07. > :41:11.in the first free practice on the same tyres. They are starting to

:41:12. > :41:16.wind it up now. RADIO: We see there was a problem without shift but

:41:17. > :41:19.after that it was OK. Sorting it out. Daniel Ricciardo goes fifth,

:41:20. > :41:25.slight improvement in time, but position stays much the same.

:41:26. > :41:31.Hamilton on top from Button, Bottas, Alonso and Ricciardo. Patrick Head,

:41:32. > :41:34.still very involved with the overall company of Williams, but less

:41:35. > :41:39.hands-on with the Formula One team. Keeping a close eye on what is going

:41:40. > :41:42.on. A long time since Williams had a victory here at this Monza circuit.

:41:43. > :41:47.They have had a good record over the years but you have to go back to

:41:48. > :41:53.2001 when Juan Pablo Montoya won here. And he has been at Monza this

:41:54. > :41:59.weekend. In fact he was the last Williams driver to have pole

:42:00. > :42:02.position here, in 2002. Sebastian Vettel popped himself up into

:42:03. > :42:07.seventh place with that time, a little bit quicker than he had

:42:08. > :42:11.previously done, but still 1.1 seconds off the lap time of

:42:12. > :42:18.Hamilton. Ericsson making a mistake at Ascari. Very easy, just a little

:42:19. > :42:23.lock-up, and suddenly you are off. Toby Ashy, his team-mate, has he had

:42:24. > :42:29.similar problems? -- Kobayashi. This is into the first chicane. He didn't

:42:30. > :42:33.even try to make the corner. It is about looking after the tyres as

:42:34. > :42:37.much as anything. If you lock-up, you have to get off the brake pedal

:42:38. > :42:41.and allow the tyre to rotate. Otherwise you get a flat spot.

:42:42. > :42:45.Jenson Button held on to the pressure yesterday and he put it

:42:46. > :42:51.right through to the canvas of the tire very quickly. And that tyre

:42:52. > :42:54.then becomes unusable. So from that point of view you are better to

:42:55. > :43:00.abort the corner, because the corner has gone anyway by then. Pastor

:43:01. > :43:05.Maldonado is currently 15th, but there is a bit of a danger for

:43:06. > :43:12.Lotus, looking at the pace, Mauritius are not far be hanged. It

:43:13. > :43:18.might be a concern. -- Marussia. They were saying Bianchi's pace,

:43:19. > :43:24.there was a bit of contact with Grosjean macro but it was a racing

:43:25. > :43:30.incident. Bianchi ended up with a punch as a result. But his pace was

:43:31. > :43:33.very much on a target with what Lotus were doing in that race. They

:43:34. > :43:38.wonder whether they might be able to do something to challenge. A faster

:43:39. > :43:44.from Maldonado. We are still waiting to see what anyone else can do.

:43:45. > :43:49.RADIO: Breaks don't feel like they are working very well, DRS not

:43:50. > :43:55.working. DRS not working, and the brakes. Lap time suggested it is not

:43:56. > :44:00.too bad, but he missed the first chicane off camera about a lap ago

:44:01. > :44:05.for Lewis Hamilton. So maybe he has some sensitivity. His brain now is

:44:06. > :44:12.tuned straight into what he needs for qualifying. This is the first

:44:13. > :44:16.chicane, comes down the gears, locks up both front wheels. On the white

:44:17. > :44:21.line a little bit, and then went through the chicane area. Fernando

:44:22. > :44:24.Alonso has just gone out on the medium compound tyres, so the first

:44:25. > :44:28.flying lap we will see is from Fernando Alonso on the softer of the

:44:29. > :44:33.two tyres. This may not be his best lap as we saw yesterday, sometimes

:44:34. > :44:38.they were doing their best lap of the one quick lap, slowing down to a

:44:39. > :44:43.recovery lap, to regenerate all the hybrid power, and then go again.

:44:44. > :44:49.Yes, Lewis Hamilton has now done his fastest first sector on a lap off

:44:50. > :44:53.camera now, and the fastest person crossing the start finish line, just

:44:54. > :44:57.over 200 mph. It has now been eclipsed by Alonso on these medium

:44:58. > :45:00.tyres. Yes, they are working well for him in that first sector, as

:45:01. > :45:04.Daniel Ricciardo gets right out of the way of Fernando Alonso. Seen

:45:05. > :45:10.plenty of wheel-to-wheel dicing between those two this season.

:45:11. > :45:13.Looking good so far. Nice through Lesmo, a 4-wheel power slide, it

:45:14. > :45:18.looked very neat and tidy through Lesmo two. Now he has the Ascari

:45:19. > :45:21.chicane, you need to carry a lot of speed into it, but not too much to

:45:22. > :45:25.bounce over the curve, and a little bit quicker. And then he needs a

:45:26. > :45:30.clean exit out for the one kilometre run down towards Parabolica.

:45:31. > :45:36.The power delivery of the Ferraris is looking good. It seems to be

:45:37. > :45:43.putting the power down more smoothly. Lets see what his corner

:45:44. > :45:57.time is like. Runs wide. Just on the limit. That's 13 kilometres an hour

:45:58. > :46:01.faster than Maldonado and the same as another driver. It is not enough

:46:02. > :46:07.to put him ahead of Lewis Hamilton. He lost two tenths between Ascari

:46:08. > :46:11.and through the last corner and Parabolica in comparison to Lewis

:46:12. > :46:16.Hamilton. Let's just, we're riding on board with Alonso now. This lap

:46:17. > :46:21.maybe a kind of regeneration lap and then he may well go again. We will

:46:22. > :46:26.have to wait and see. As we heard from Christian Horner with these

:46:27. > :46:31.hybrid systems, you can't go and do two flat out-laps one after the

:46:32. > :46:36.other? Well, you can do it, but you don't have the maximum boostment you

:46:37. > :46:41.don't have the amount of extra energy that you ideally need. You're

:46:42. > :46:45.better to store the energy up on your out-lap go for it on one lap

:46:46. > :46:49.and build the energy store up to maximum and go again while your tyre

:46:50. > :46:53.has got life in it. Kimi Raikkonen has gone out on the medium compound

:46:54. > :46:57.tyre. Max Chilton is still on the harder compound tyre, but he put in

:46:58. > :47:03.a couple of personal best sector times. That's why we're keeping an

:47:04. > :47:07.eye on him. His team-mate, Jules Bianchi is a fraction faster at this

:47:08. > :47:10.point. Kimi Raikkonen is on a lap at the moment. On the medium compound

:47:11. > :47:15.tyre, but nobody else has gone out on that tyre yet. Max Chilton does

:47:16. > :47:18.improve. He goes ahead of his team-mate by 100ths of a second.

:47:19. > :47:28.That's all the difference there is between Max Chilton and Bianchi. Max

:47:29. > :47:35.Chilton raced here in three Formula 3. He felt comfortable at this Monza

:47:36. > :47:40.circuit. Looking into the pit garage of Jenson Button as he waits for the

:47:41. > :47:45.opportunity to come out and do his qualifying simulation run. Alonso

:47:46. > :47:53.did a 1 minute 40 and now he is back on it again.

:47:54. > :47:58.TEAM RADIO: Left switch. Left switch. He has got to turn through

:47:59. > :48:02.the first corner, I think he was on, whichever that left switch is. But

:48:03. > :48:08.he just dragged that into the second chicane there and lost the rear a

:48:09. > :48:11.little bit as we watch Gutierrez coming up on Sutil. His eyes were

:48:12. > :48:17.dragged to where his team-mate was going to go and an odd situation

:48:18. > :48:23.there, but Alonso was really pushing the edge of the limit with this

:48:24. > :48:29.second run on the tyre. He has got that Ascari chicane. Comes to the

:48:30. > :48:33.middle of circuit. Underbraking and he is three tenths slower than he

:48:34. > :48:38.was on his flying lap. He is not getting the sector times on this

:48:39. > :48:42.flying lap. He is not as quick as he was than on his first flying lap.

:48:43. > :48:44.Maybe that's to do with track temperatures, but it doesn't seem to

:48:45. > :48:50.be delivering second time around. This is useful information for all

:48:51. > :48:54.the teams, of course. Yes. And he is going into the pits, so he has

:48:55. > :48:57.aborted the lap and popping into the pits. Kimi Raikkonen is the one to

:48:58. > :49:02.watch now. He is on his lap with his first flying lap on the softer tyre

:49:03. > :49:06.with the white side walls, the medium compound. Into Parabolica. A

:49:07. > :49:11.bit of understeer there. The front of the car didn't hook in. It

:49:12. > :49:16.transferred to oversteer as he has gone on the power. The paint looks

:49:17. > :49:20.to be slippery still, but there is more rubber going don't to it as

:49:21. > :49:25.Kimi Raikkonen's third. Just over half a second behind Hamilton. Yes,

:49:26. > :49:29.and Four tenths slower than his team-mate at the same time on the

:49:30. > :49:32.softer tyre. He won't be happy about that, I don't think, he lost a bit

:49:33. > :49:36.to Fernando Alonso in similar conditions. So not ideal for Kimi

:49:37. > :49:42.Raikkonen. But we will see what he can do if he does another second run

:49:43. > :49:47.on those tyres. Lewis Hamilton in the car all happy, but Nico Rosberg

:49:48. > :49:52.is unable to do anymore laps as his car is being worked on. It is

:49:53. > :49:56.affecting Nico Rosberg's preparation for qualifying and although Hamilton

:49:57. > :49:59.had the problems yesterday, it is Nico Rosberg who is having to stand

:50:00. > :50:04.on the sidelines as he waits for the car to be fixed and Sergio Perez is

:50:05. > :50:09.back after having abandoned his car out on track and looking concerned

:50:10. > :50:12.and hoping that they won't have to execute a gearbox change on his car

:50:13. > :50:17.which would give him a penalty on the grid. Valtteri Bottas is

:50:18. > :50:22.currently fifth fastest. Are Williams going to sacrifice any of

:50:23. > :50:24.their race pace that they showed strongly on Friday afternoon for

:50:25. > :50:28.qualifying pace? That's got to be the question. It doesn't look as if

:50:29. > :50:32.they have got the frontline qualifying pace, but let's wait and

:50:33. > :50:36.see when they put the softer tyre on. Here is Adrian Sutil in the

:50:37. > :50:39.Sauber and a team that's been fighting at lower end of the order

:50:40. > :50:42.and once again, there is Sutil fighting with the handling of the

:50:43. > :50:49.car! Yes, this is another team that has not been able to transform the

:50:50. > :50:54.form that they had at the end of 2013 into 2014 and not been able to

:50:55. > :50:58.pick it up. They gained a little bit from the German Grand Prix onwards,

:50:59. > :51:04.but it has only been marginal. At the beginning of the season they

:51:05. > :51:09.were struggling. Now, they're firmly into the bottom end of, I should say

:51:10. > :51:15.between tenth and 15th, but there is no way of them getting into the top

:51:16. > :51:25.ten. They are reasonably matched the two Sauber team-mates. Sutil has the

:51:26. > :51:29.upper hand. 7-5 in favour of the more experienced of the two drivers.

:51:30. > :51:33.Gutierrez the lighter weight, but Sauber have been able to save weight

:51:34. > :51:36.on the car. It started the season heavy, but they managed to get it

:51:37. > :51:41.down to the weight limit. You can see on that lap, he has not done

:51:42. > :51:47.anything special. He is on the harder compound tyre. We are seeing

:51:48. > :51:52.Hulkenberg come out on the softer tyre. Bianchi's time is only a

:51:53. > :51:59.fraction slower than Maldonado as well. So it will be close at that

:52:00. > :52:06.back group as we are seeing up at the front as well. The Caterhams

:52:07. > :52:16.seem to be struggling. Grosjean in between the two Caterham drivers.

:52:17. > :52:27.There is a few former Ferrari drivers around. That was Fishkella

:52:28. > :52:31.there on microphone. Unlike Friday afternoon, you are only going to get

:52:32. > :52:39.one flying lap out of these tyres. That seems to be the case. It puts a

:52:40. > :52:42.lot of pressure on the driver to maximise that first flying lap

:52:43. > :52:47.especially the brake nothing the first and the second chicanes. They

:52:48. > :52:52.can't afford a lock-up because you know if you have to abort and go

:52:53. > :52:57.again you have lost a couple of tenths. Ferrari are second and third

:52:58. > :53:06.and they are waiting for Hamilton to use the softer tyre. There is Ron

:53:07. > :53:10.Dennis. They have a little bit of time. Button and Magnussen will be

:53:11. > :53:15.coming out on circuit. Hulkenberg has gun to the tyres already -- gone

:53:16. > :53:19.to the tyres already. When he was driving for Sauber he qualified

:53:20. > :53:22.third at this track. It shows you the difference between a year.

:53:23. > :53:28.Sauber is struggling to get anywhere near the top ten, but he was third

:53:29. > :53:33.here last year on the grid and finished in fifth place. He is back

:53:34. > :53:37.with Force India. He is having a good year. There is only one race he

:53:38. > :53:44.failed to score points. Let's see what this lap is like Allan. He is

:53:45. > :53:49.exiting Ascari. Uses the road. It's kind of an average lap. It is not a

:53:50. > :53:53.fantastic lap I have to say. He is three tenths off in the middle

:53:54. > :53:58.sector and he is another three tenths after in comparison to Lewis

:53:59. > :54:03.Hamilton on the used hard tyre. Hamilton did 16 laps on that tyre.

:54:04. > :54:11.Nice and clean out of Parabolica to cross the line. And he goes a little

:54:12. > :54:14.bit quicker, but not much. Not the gain that you would have expected in

:54:15. > :54:20.his last sector. He was a fraction slower than he had been on the hard

:54:21. > :54:23.compound tyre. No real gain found by Hulkenberg despite going to the

:54:24. > :54:29.softer of the two compounds. Maybe he will back off and try to go once

:54:30. > :54:33.more. Felipe Massa, who, of course, has always been a fans favourite

:54:34. > :54:36.here when he was driving for Ferrari, now he drives for Williams,

:54:37. > :54:39.but there is a lot of affection for the Brazilian and now McLaren begin

:54:40. > :54:44.to send their cars. Jenson Button is on his way. Alonso has gone back on

:54:45. > :54:50.to the track. Daniel Ricciardo is out on circuit now with the softer

:54:51. > :55:01.tyre on. Yeah, he is going to do a practise start. We will try and

:55:02. > :55:07.close in and see how this sounds. Magnussen following him through.

:55:08. > :55:10.Yeah, he was quick to get on with the programme and get out on to the

:55:11. > :55:14.circuit. Remember, when he did that at the beginning of the session, he

:55:15. > :55:18.struggled for a couple of laps to get the brakes and everything up to

:55:19. > :55:22.temperature. He would want to make sure he kept residual temperature

:55:23. > :55:26.into the tyres and not sit too long at the end of the pit lane. Daniel

:55:27. > :55:30.Ricciardo, the man who has been such a star of recent ehaven'ts. Top

:55:31. > :55:34.points scorer in the last six Grand Prix, three victories to his credit

:55:35. > :55:43.and looking for a hat-trick this weekend. He won the last two Grand

:55:44. > :55:47.Prix, one in Hungary and one in Spa. This is a power circuit and although

:55:48. > :55:52.he has been able to pick up great results on power circuits due to

:55:53. > :55:58.problems for other teams, it is unlikely that we will see the Red

:55:59. > :56:02.Bull near the front in qualifying. He is trying to maximise the

:56:03. > :56:06.temperatures into everything. He takes a different line than he will

:56:07. > :56:11.on the flying lap out of Parabolica so he starts it with the maximum

:56:12. > :56:16.speed crossing the start/finish line. This qualifying for Red Bull

:56:17. > :56:21.is critical. If they get this right, they have got half a chance

:56:22. > :56:24.tomorrow. If they don't, if they can't maximise their qualifying

:56:25. > :56:30.speed and get in the mix, it will be hard for them with the strategy

:56:31. > :56:41.looking to be a one stopper and their straight line speed. Hamilton

:56:42. > :56:46.is fastest at 352 kilometres per hour. We have hit the 220mph mark at

:56:47. > :56:53.this speed trap going down towards the first chicane, but Red Bull

:56:54. > :56:57.giving up 14 kilometres an hour despite the little skinny wings that

:56:58. > :57:02.they are running. This is where that hurts them. They can't take the

:57:03. > :57:07.corners as fast because there is less downforce. The rear flap opens

:57:08. > :57:11.up as he approaches Ascari and sector times, he is improving on

:57:12. > :57:14.what he did on the hard tyre. He is getting a gain in performance

:57:15. > :57:18.through both of the first two sectors, but he wouldn't be doing

:57:19. > :57:25.enough to reach those top times, I think. Hamilton's time set on the

:57:26. > :57:33.hard tyre, but Hamilton has come out on the medium compound tyre. He runs

:57:34. > :57:37.very, very wide. Just allows the car to keep two wheels over that white

:57:38. > :57:42.line on to the green and all the way over the kerb. It goes seven tenths

:57:43. > :57:47.down. Hamilton's hard tyre time. Jenson Button will look at these. He

:57:48. > :57:51.is going quick in the middle sector. So we have had Daniel Ricciardo

:57:52. > :57:57.popping up fourth, but Jenson Button is on one here. What is worrying for

:57:58. > :58:01.Red Bull, he is five tenths slower than Alonso, but that's a big

:58:02. > :58:06.difference between Ricciardo and the Red Bull and Alonso and the Ferrari.

:58:07. > :58:10.Big hitters from Ferrari. I want to see them replicate those times in

:58:11. > :58:14.qualifying. The boss of Ferrari keeping an eye on what's going on

:58:15. > :58:18.here this weekend. He is the President of Ferrari and there is a

:58:19. > :58:21.lot of gossip about whether he will be holding that position for a great

:58:22. > :58:26.deal longer. Jenson Button has gone third fastest on his medium compound

:58:27. > :58:28.tyre. Faster than the Red Bull. It does look as if McLaren could

:58:29. > :58:32.challenge Red Bull in terms of positions in the top ten here. Lewis

:58:33. > :58:37.Hamilton though, let's see what he can do. He has gone fastest in the

:58:38. > :58:40.middle sector. First sector though, not the quickest of all

:58:41. > :58:45.interestingly. Let's just see where this brings him. It should be an

:58:46. > :58:53.improvement in time. On the softer tyre. And it's not. It is a

:58:54. > :59:01.1.25.745. We have got radio. TEAM RADIO: How is the balance? I

:59:02. > :59:06.struggled with the rear in the low speed. I couldn't quite make much in

:59:07. > :59:11.the first sector. Some feedback from Ricciardo. We saw this in Austria

:59:12. > :59:15.where the Mercedes didn't pick up as much speed on the softer tyre as we

:59:16. > :59:18.had been expecting and that brought Williams into the picture there.

:59:19. > :59:24.Maybe that's going to allow Ferrari into the picture more in qualifying

:59:25. > :59:30.at least for this Monza Grand Prix. That's one to watch. It shows

:59:31. > :59:36.Alonso's time there. It is competitive. Valtteri Bottas popped

:59:37. > :59:41.up into third place on his run. It still leaves Hamilton fastest on the

:59:42. > :59:45.hard tyre and on the soft. From a race point of view he has both

:59:46. > :59:50.options covered. Significantly quicker than anyone on the hard.

:59:51. > :59:53.Massa has gone quickest on the first sector and quick in terms of the

:59:54. > :59:57.straight line speeds. Massa coming up. Here we are on board with him

:59:58. > :00:06.and he is still quickest as he enters into Ascari. This is fastest

:00:07. > :00:10.than Hamilton's time. Hamilton has done a time. Massa is always rapid

:00:11. > :00:15.over the one lap. There is no doubt about his single lap pace. He

:00:16. > :00:19.outqualified Alonso here the last couple of years and he is teetering

:00:20. > :00:27.a little bit there through Parabolica. He dropped a little bit

:00:28. > :00:31.off on Ascari. He has got his personal best in sector one. It is

:00:32. > :00:37.only enough for fourth place. Just half a tenth behind Valtteri Bottas.

:00:38. > :00:43.A very impressive lap from Alonso holds him in second place at the

:00:44. > :00:48.moment. Ferrari, we were not expecting to see quite this level of

:00:49. > :00:53.performance, but it is impressive. Button on another lap, holding on to

:00:54. > :00:58.fifth place at the moment. His second lap on these tyres. The first

:00:59. > :01:01.one popped up into third place. Remember we have seen everybody else

:01:02. > :01:06.dropping back three tenths, give or take, on the second run. Let's see

:01:07. > :01:10.if Button can do a bit more with it than the rest. He has a better first

:01:11. > :01:16.sector than he had before, but the middle sector is not an improvement,

:01:17. > :01:19.so let's see. It is a slight improvement, but it does not change

:01:20. > :01:24.his position, still fifth, a 10th slower than Philippe Massa. One to

:01:25. > :01:31.watch in a moment will be Sebastian Vettel, who has just gone on to his

:01:32. > :01:34.flying lap. Ricciardo's flying lap was not so impressive, but can

:01:35. > :01:41.Sebastian Vettel get closer to the Ferraris? Making the comment that

:01:42. > :01:46.the brakes are not very good, same as his team-mate. We don't know

:01:47. > :01:49.whether it is another manufacturer or not, changing the brake material

:01:50. > :01:54.at the start of the session because he did not feel a good consistency

:01:55. > :01:58.or feedback from the pedal. Interesting, Hamilton not bad happy.

:01:59. > :02:03.Rosberg has been saying all year he is not 100% happy with the braking.

:02:04. > :02:06.Of course he is missing out on this chance to get some experience on the

:02:07. > :02:10.softer tyres, a real feel for what it is like at the limit

:02:11. > :02:14.underbraking. Riding with Bottas, he has gone for another quick lap.

:02:15. > :02:19.Improving slightly, is it enough to go ahead of Alonso? Still third for

:02:20. > :02:24.him. Missed out on the final sector, there. He was 1000th of a second

:02:25. > :02:29.slower than he had been on his previous lap. He gained in the first

:02:30. > :02:33.two sectors but lost over a 10th in the final sector, is that the tyres

:02:34. > :02:37.giving up at the end? I think it is not being able to get the first

:02:38. > :02:41.sector absolutely spot on, on the first lap, as opposed to anything

:02:42. > :02:46.else. He seemed to be gaining on the first sector on the second lap.

:02:47. > :02:51.Vettel has gone six, so not a lot quicker than Ricciardo, but a little

:02:52. > :02:59.bit. There is an interesting... Nice to see the relationship between

:03:00. > :03:06.Alonso and him. How real is that, we wonder. I think it is a genuine

:03:07. > :03:11.emotion. Both are very Latin, we are in Monza, home ground of Ferrari.

:03:12. > :03:15.There will be an element of relief as well that they are somewhat

:03:16. > :03:19.competitive. Ferrari came into this with all of the statements... As

:03:20. > :03:23.Hamilton fires it through Ascari. All of the statements that this

:03:24. > :03:26.would be a hard weekend for them. Hamilton has the fastest middle

:03:27. > :03:30.sector of anybody, so he could improve on his second flying lap on

:03:31. > :03:35.these tyres. Button going quicker again, a third flying lap, I

:03:36. > :03:40.believe, for Button. Hamilton currently fastest. Could he go a bit

:03:41. > :03:47.quicker? Yes. So he does gametime on the softer compound tyre, but only

:03:48. > :03:51.his second flying lap. Button on his third flying lap, let's see whether

:03:52. > :03:54.the McLaren can gain some more. Nico Rosberg trying to learn as much as

:03:55. > :03:59.he can from all of the sector times appearing on the screens. Ron Dennis

:04:00. > :04:04.will have seen the improvement. Kevin Magnussen currently 11th, on a

:04:05. > :04:11.lap at the moment. Definitely a bit off Jenson Button at this stage.

:04:12. > :04:15.29.6 in the middle sector, it is reasonable. Let's see whether Kevin

:04:16. > :04:20.Magnussen will make an improvement from his current 11. Oh, he really

:04:21. > :04:25.runs it wide that time. He did, he got a kick right at the point where

:04:26. > :04:29.he needed to pull the car back and lost a bit. Jenson Button is behind

:04:30. > :04:34.him, and Jenson Button will be coming across the line in a second

:04:35. > :04:39.or two. I don't think it will be a quick lap overall, but definitely a

:04:40. > :04:44.quicker first section. Kvyat on a lap, this puts intense at the

:04:45. > :04:47.moment, impressive. He goes eighth. But remember he will have a temper

:04:48. > :04:53.his penalty on the grid because of going to his six engine. -- he will

:04:54. > :04:57.have a ten place penalty. And that was Kevin Magnussen, presumably that

:04:58. > :05:02.was the lap we picked up, but we had not seen that. We did see this

:05:03. > :05:06.mistake through Parabolica. Very quick entry, lost the rear early,

:05:07. > :05:11.and got a bit wide and lost it again as he was trying to get back onto

:05:12. > :05:16.the fossil. Just a little bit too fast on entry -- onto the throttle.

:05:17. > :05:21.Is that a classic case of over driving the car? A classic case. One

:05:22. > :05:24.minute before you start to go into qualifying and you throw caution to

:05:25. > :05:28.the wind. You can do that because there is the run-off area, a get out

:05:29. > :05:32.of jail free card. Without doubt I would take that risk as well. Look

:05:33. > :05:37.at the speed trap, Hamilton with quite a big margin over the other

:05:38. > :05:46.Mercedes powered car, Valtteri Bottas. Just shows you how they have

:05:47. > :05:49.balance out the power against the downforce on the cars, so running

:05:50. > :05:57.very low drag setups. The chequered flag is now out on this session.

:05:58. > :06:00.RADIO: Kevin, relative to Jensen, losing a couple of tenths in each

:06:01. > :06:05.sector, we will try to give you more feedback. Bit of work to be done,

:06:06. > :06:07.but that's what it's all about in practice, see if they can convert

:06:08. > :06:11.that when it comes to qualifying itself. Hamilton has ended up

:06:12. > :06:18.fastest in this third practice session of the weekend. One minute

:06:19. > :06:22.25.5 is the time he achieved. We were never able to see what Nico

:06:23. > :06:26.Rosberg could have done. Interestingly, Sebastian Vettel was

:06:27. > :06:31.fastest here last year in practice doing, on a 1:20 4.3. Just over a

:06:32. > :06:36.second away from what was achieved here 12 months ago. Hamilton

:06:37. > :06:39.fastest, Alonso second, and that's an impressive lap time from Fernando

:06:40. > :06:45.Alonso. It really shows that Ferrari could challenge for a high starting

:06:46. > :06:48.position. And Nico Rosberg, he will see how close the times and it will

:06:49. > :06:52.be a concern because it means that if you make a little mistake here,

:06:53. > :06:55.even driving a Mercedes, you could easily be pushed down the order by

:06:56. > :07:01.the likes of Bottas, Massa, maybe even Button. Hamilton certainly

:07:02. > :07:07.getting the rub of the green so far today, as he has ended up fastest in

:07:08. > :07:12.this first session. Alonso second, Bottas third, Massa has been fourth

:07:13. > :07:20.fastest. Of course none of this counts towards the grid as yet, it

:07:21. > :07:31.is qualifying that matters. The times are very close between Button

:07:32. > :07:36.and Vettel. Kevin Magnussen seemed to be struggling a little bit for

:07:37. > :07:41.pace coming he was 11th fastest out of what would be qualifying free, of

:07:42. > :07:45.course. Gutierrez, that is actually quite impressive in the Sauber.

:07:46. > :07:56.Remember that Sergio Perez never had an opportunity to put the softer

:07:57. > :08:05.tyres on. Jules Bianchi did well, faster than both of the Lotus

:08:06. > :08:12.vehicles. Very impressive. A bit quicker than his team-mate Chilton.

:08:13. > :08:18.Nico Rosberg not getting any times in as a result of gearbox problems.

:08:19. > :08:23.He did three installation laps earlier in the session but nothing

:08:24. > :08:27.more. Hamilton ends up fastest in final practice and Rosberg has

:08:28. > :08:33.problems at the start of the qualifying day here at Monza.

:08:34. > :08:37.A difficult morning for Nico Rosberg, but I imagine quite a few

:08:38. > :08:42.smiles inside Williams at the moment. The chief technical officer

:08:43. > :08:46.joins me. Tell us about the mood in the camp after what you saw on track

:08:47. > :08:50.this morning? Pretty good. We expected to be pretty competitive

:08:51. > :08:56.here. It is very close, isn't it? From behind the Mercedes, Ferrari

:08:57. > :09:01.and ourselves battling, McLaren joining in this weekend. So it is

:09:02. > :09:05.going to be tight. How much of a surprise is it that we seem to be

:09:06. > :09:07.coming to the circuit and teens which we didn't necessarily imagine

:09:08. > :09:11.would be performing so well, even though they do have the engine for

:09:12. > :09:15.somewhere like Monza, have suddenly turned up and seem to be

:09:16. > :09:19.competitive? That is the thing, it is Monza, it is different to most of

:09:20. > :09:25.the circuit. It is power, drag, that are really important here. Downforce

:09:26. > :09:29.maybe not. Maybe that's an overstatement. But you will see a

:09:30. > :09:33.slight change in the pecking order on a circuit like this. Even when we

:09:34. > :09:41.have gone to circuits when we thought power was important like

:09:42. > :09:44.Canada or Spa, Red Bull seem to have done well, although circumstances

:09:45. > :09:49.last week in Spa may be played into their hands. I think it did. Spa is

:09:50. > :09:53.a bit of a con demise on both, you need a car with good downforce in

:09:54. > :09:59.high-speed corners. Red Bull still have a very good chassis. The three

:10:00. > :10:03.Bottas said yesterday that he would be aiming for the podium, as always,

:10:04. > :10:09.it would just depend what steps. Is that how high confidence is with

:10:10. > :10:12.Valtteri at the moment? Absolutely, and that is the confidence of

:10:13. > :10:16.Williams, and that is what we are racing for, podium positions. A

:10:17. > :10:20.couple of times this year I feel we have not been able to pick up when

:10:21. > :10:24.Mercedes have not had their best days. We have got to make sure we

:10:25. > :10:29.are not in that position, make sure we are always there, always behind

:10:30. > :10:34.and ready to just take those points. I hope for a win before the end of

:10:35. > :10:39.the season. We know how strong Felipe is around here,

:10:40. > :10:44.out-qualifying Fernando in the last couple of years, he loves this

:10:45. > :10:49.circuit. What is his feeling? Good. The car is well balanced and we have

:10:50. > :10:55.a nice, I is between speed and grid. He was right with Valtteri and there

:10:56. > :10:59.was nothing to change between them. Are we expecting any surprises this

:11:00. > :11:05.afternoon, do you think? I don't think so. I think we are sort of

:11:06. > :11:07.shooting for the second row. It is tight, as I said earlier, but I

:11:08. > :11:12.don't think there will be any big surprises. Just explain what happens

:11:13. > :11:16.with the team between now and qualifying starting, because there

:11:17. > :11:19.is not long. There isn't. We go through everything we have done this

:11:20. > :11:22.morning, we have done more setup work and we decide on the final bit

:11:23. > :11:27.of tuning, make sure we discuss every lap, think about the traffic

:11:28. > :11:32.in qualifying, make sure we have the tyres that right. It is absolute

:11:33. > :11:36.attention to detail now. Thank you very much for joining us this

:11:37. > :11:38.morning. We are going to walk around here, because Allan McNish is here

:11:39. > :11:42.at the back of the Williams garage, which is pretty tight, especially

:11:43. > :11:48.with everybody trying to work on the tyres. Pirelli getting down to

:11:49. > :11:52.business behind us. Interesting session, and some misfortune for

:11:53. > :11:55.some of the bigger names. Nico Rosberg lost out today, it was Lewis

:11:56. > :11:58.Hamilton who lost out yesterday, both of them lost different things.

:11:59. > :12:03.Nico Rosberg lost the critical qualifying simulation and Lewis

:12:04. > :12:08.Hamilton lost the feel for what the tyres are going to be like in the

:12:09. > :12:12.long run. Personally I think Lewis Hamilton has more of a psychological

:12:13. > :12:15.advantage, because he is tuned in for qualifying, and knows what the

:12:16. > :12:21.car will need to be like in a slightly hotter condition.

:12:22. > :12:26.Alternately for Mercedes it has been perfect, there have been some

:12:27. > :12:29.problems -- ultimately. As Pat said, Williams have got to be there when

:12:30. > :12:36.those problems do arise. Right here I think is the best option, best

:12:37. > :12:40.chance of a victory. Paddy Lowe is with Tom Clarkson at the moment.

:12:41. > :12:45.What else can you tell others about the gearbox problem of Nico Rosberg?

:12:46. > :12:49.An electronic problem which is affecting the gear shifts. It kind

:12:50. > :12:53.of works, but it doesn't set itself up properly. The all-important

:12:54. > :12:57.question, will you have to replace the gearbox and will he get a

:12:58. > :13:02.penalty? No, we don't think he will get a penalty, we are just changing

:13:03. > :13:07.part. Pretty confident it will be fine for qualifying. Who has the

:13:08. > :13:11.bigger task? Lewis Hamilton missed an hour yesterday afternoon, Nico

:13:12. > :13:14.Rosberg effectively missed an hour this morning, whose shoes would you

:13:15. > :13:19.rather be in? It is not great for either of them to miss time. Very

:13:20. > :13:24.disappointed to have lost that time for them. Difficult to call.

:13:25. > :13:28.Probably worse to lose today, to be honest. Why is it that you are

:13:29. > :13:32.having these technical issues at this race track? It has not been a

:13:33. > :13:35.clean weekend. Is it related to the high top speeds we are seeing, three

:13:36. > :13:40.quarters of the lap at full throttle? Totally unrelated to the

:13:41. > :13:44.circuit, they are just two issues that we haven't ever seen before.

:13:45. > :13:48.One of them and engine faults, could have happened on any of the other

:13:49. > :13:54.seven Mercedes engines, unfortunately happened on Lewis's.

:13:55. > :13:58.Gearbox issue not something we have seen before, but we will sort it

:13:59. > :14:02.out. Quick look at a qualifying, the times look close this morning, I

:14:03. > :14:06.assume you are keeping your powder dry? We ran a pretty normal strategy

:14:07. > :14:10.to be honest. As we have done through the weekend. So yeah, I

:14:11. > :14:17.think we will see where we end up this afternoon. Lewis had a very

:14:18. > :14:20.good run on the prime tyres and the option, so we are reasonable

:14:21. > :14:26.confident we can get a result this afternoon. They don't seem to get it

:14:27. > :14:31.right in twos, it seems to be either Lewis Hamilton's day or Nico Rosberg

:14:32. > :14:36.pars. But at least it doesn't sound like Nico Rosberg will get a

:14:37. > :14:42.penalty. They will obviously do everything they can to avoid that

:14:43. > :14:48.penalty. Lewis Hamilton had 18 run. He didn't gain the lap time

:14:49. > :14:54.advantage I expected on the option, it looked to be a little less. But

:14:55. > :14:58.it was a clean lap that he did get, nice in the breaking into the second

:14:59. > :15:02.chicane, here. Go down the gears, hit the kerb on the left, tried to

:15:03. > :15:06.hit the kerb on the right but be careful not to go to far over before

:15:07. > :15:11.the exit and you run up into Lesmo one, and then Lesmo two. You can see

:15:12. > :15:15.the shadows on the track from the trees around here. We know they made

:15:16. > :15:16.some changes to Parabolica, how do you think the drivers have been

:15:17. > :15:23.handling it? Well, they have been attacking into

:15:24. > :15:27.it more. But the Ascari chicane is the one now. As he comes through

:15:28. > :15:32.here nice and cleanly, the important part is to be smooth on this exit.

:15:33. > :15:36.You can run all four wheels off, but now with Parabolica you will see

:15:37. > :15:40.that you can attack much, much more into it. And this is where Lewis

:15:41. > :15:44.Hamilton, I was standing on the right-hand side yesterday, he was

:15:45. > :15:51.deep on the brakes and he got down into fourth gear and squeezed on the

:15:52. > :15:54.throttle. We have seen people using the run off area and that's allowed.

:15:55. > :15:57.Lewis Hamilton will need to do more if he is going to get pole position

:15:58. > :16:02.this afternoon. He will be looking for a clean qualifying and hopeful

:16:03. > :16:06.pole position because that's not happened since back to the beginning

:16:07. > :16:11.of May at the Spanish Grand Prix. When Lewis is in a bad place, he

:16:12. > :16:17.goes back to his family and friends. Anthony Hamilton is speaking to

:16:18. > :16:20.Jennie. Anthony Hamilton. It is good to see you and you are probably

:16:21. > :16:27.pleased to be here to watch your son? Yes, it is nice to be in sun

:16:28. > :16:31.for a change. I saw you smiling away when Lewis posted that fast time.

:16:32. > :16:36.How is he feeling? He is in a really good space actually. I think he is

:16:37. > :16:40.feeling really good. I think performances this weekend will be

:16:41. > :16:46.reliable I would like to think. 29 points is the difference. How big do

:16:47. > :16:50.you think that is? You know, it is not huge, is it? It looks like it is

:16:51. > :16:54.a mountain to climb, but there is seven races left and you have got to

:16:55. > :16:58.be positive every time you go out on the track and that's probably one of

:16:59. > :17:01.Lewis' strengths. This weekend, I think he has come back with a view

:17:02. > :17:08.that there is all to play for still. You have had a lot to deal with this

:17:09. > :17:13.season together. He confides in you a lot. Silverstone was a big hurdle.

:17:14. > :17:18.How has the last two weeks been for you and him? They have been normal

:17:19. > :17:22.weeks to be quite honest. Life is full of turbulent ups and downs and

:17:23. > :17:26.positives. He had a really good couple of weeks and so have we. I

:17:27. > :17:30.would like to think every time Lewis comes to the race, it is a new start

:17:31. > :17:34.and that's what it has got to be, you can't afford to carry all the

:17:35. > :17:38.stuff from the past. Do you think he can be a world champion this year?

:17:39. > :17:42.Are you still believing? I am Lewis' biggest believer. I think we're

:17:43. > :17:46.going to win it this year. Well, best of luck. If you don't think

:17:47. > :17:49.like that well you will never win anything. You have got to be

:17:50. > :17:53.positive. He has got to nail this qualifying session. I think he will

:17:54. > :17:59.be fine. I think he will be good today. Thank you very much. Nice to

:18:00. > :18:03.see you. Nice to see you too. Lots of optimism in the Hamilton camp. It

:18:04. > :18:08.was a tough qualifying session for Sergio Perez. Did his car get stuck

:18:09. > :18:12.in second gear? He couldn't go down or up. It is not as if you have got

:18:13. > :18:16.a stick shift. Once it is in that position there is little the driver

:18:17. > :18:24.can do and that put him out of it. He lost Friday morning as well. He

:18:25. > :18:28.gave his car to a test driver. In reality only did 13 laps yesterday

:18:29. > :18:34.morning and this is a setback for them. These guys are quick in the

:18:35. > :18:40.straights and they have got a good raceable car. They are in a huge

:18:41. > :18:45.battle with McLaren. McLaren sneaked past them and this is a battle that

:18:46. > :18:49.will rumble on until the end? Clearly, I have to say McLaren have

:18:50. > :18:53.been the one that have been moving forward. Around here they are more

:18:54. > :18:56.competitive. Jenson Button has been really good today. Yesterday, he had

:18:57. > :19:00.the legs on Kevin Magnussen, but he was putting in some nice, neat times

:19:01. > :19:05.and the thing for me that was impressive, he was able to do it in

:19:06. > :19:08.the second and third lap on the tyre whereas others were dropping off.

:19:09. > :19:12.That bodes well for him and he is revelling in something that he feels

:19:13. > :19:17.in the car now. We're standing in the glorious sunshine here in Monza,

:19:18. > :19:28.but it has been stormy, not only at Spa, but since Spa. Yesterday, Toto

:19:29. > :19:34.Wolf has been explaining since that battle. What are the rules of

:19:35. > :19:40.engagement this weekend? Don't hit your team-mate! Judging by your pace

:19:41. > :19:45.during practise, you look to have an aadvantage over one lap which means

:19:46. > :19:51.your car will be on the front row of the grid. If it happens again, what

:19:52. > :19:54.happens then? Well, you know, we are optimistic and we had a good

:19:55. > :19:59.discussion. I doubt it will happen again. So you know, there has been

:20:00. > :20:02.lots of speculation what would happen, if it would happen, let's

:20:03. > :20:08.not discuss that yet. It is too controversial. Speculation driven by

:20:09. > :20:15.you because you said to the BBC yesterday actually that if they

:20:16. > :20:20.cannot do the job properly for you in the spirit of Mercedes-Benz you

:20:21. > :20:23.will look to change the driver line-up? The question is what would

:20:24. > :20:27.you do if they continue to crash into each other and my response was

:20:28. > :20:32.if they continue to crash into each other then we have to think about

:20:33. > :20:36.the line-up. How important is a German driver for Mercedes? We are a

:20:37. > :20:41.global company and we have big markets and a brand which is shining

:20:42. > :20:45.all over the world and this is why it is not important which

:20:46. > :20:48.nationality is sitting in the car. A lot has been made of the way the

:20:49. > :20:52.drivers are dealing with it on track. Can we talk about the

:20:53. > :20:55.management and the way you guys dealt with it? First of all how

:20:56. > :21:00.would you describe your management style? Well, you know, it is always

:21:01. > :21:04.very difficult to describe your own management style. You know,

:21:05. > :21:10.everybody has ups and downs. Sometimes you are emotional and you

:21:11. > :21:14.are less emotional. The most important thing is to be authentic

:21:15. > :21:18.and to continue to manage things the way you have always do it. Sometimes

:21:19. > :21:22.you will do it in a good way. Sometimes you will find out

:21:23. > :21:27.afterwards it wasn't perfect. We are all very emotional about the sport

:21:28. > :21:32.and emotions have driven us to where we are today. Motivation is part of

:21:33. > :21:35.an emotion and it is a strong emotion and this is why I believe

:21:36. > :21:39.generally that's important for the team. And if you could go back in

:21:40. > :21:43.time two weeks, would you have done anything differently in the

:21:44. > :21:53.aftermath of the Spa race? I'm not sure I would have answered your

:21:54. > :22:02.question back in Spa! You know, that was a very intense moment. Could I

:22:03. > :22:13.have reacted? I could have made a face less like that's me! Good luck,

:22:14. > :22:19.thank you. Thank you. Toto Devil Face Wolff. Mercedes are a global

:22:20. > :22:24.brand and yet they seem to want to interact with the public, Twitter.

:22:25. > :22:27.This weekend they are using a hashtag no sparring and they asked

:22:28. > :22:30.last weekend what the public thought of what happened on track between

:22:31. > :22:33.Nico and Lewis. Do you think that's right? They said to the public if

:22:34. > :22:37.you were running the team, what would you do? Personally, I thought

:22:38. > :22:43.that was a risky strategy because they might have got back information

:22:44. > :22:49.they didn't want to hear! But Toto is an open person and Nicky lauder

:22:50. > :22:52.is an open person. Toto says what he feels. It is run by emotion and we

:22:53. > :22:57.are here because someone has got the passion and drive and I don't think

:22:58. > :23:00.he can change his natural way of doing things and there's his

:23:01. > :23:04.management style and it allowed great racing. No questions about it.

:23:05. > :23:10.But there does have to be a calming hand on the situation every now and

:23:11. > :23:13.again and for me, the lines to say if they keep crashing into each

:23:14. > :23:17.other then we might have to look at the driver line-up was a shot across

:23:18. > :23:23.the bows to remind both drivers who the actual boss was and what the

:23:24. > :23:30.most important thing was which was a Mercedes-Benz Carwyns the grand --

:23:31. > :23:35.car wins the Grand Prix. The man in charge of Ferrari and when he turns

:23:36. > :23:40.up at Monza, it is like the king has arrived. He has his security. He is

:23:41. > :23:43.mobbed. Everybody here loves him. It is difficult to put that into

:23:44. > :23:47.prospective how big a name that he is even though he is a team boss. He

:23:48. > :23:53.goes on to the pit wall. He walks across to the garage and gets into a

:23:54. > :23:58.big conversation. There is a lot of love between Fernando Alonso and the

:23:59. > :24:07.boss. Whenever we get to Monza there is always talks of rumours

:24:08. > :24:12.particularly with Ferrari and the rumour in Ferrari HQ is president

:24:13. > :24:19.boss may not be so for too much longer. Has it got gravitas? We can

:24:20. > :24:26.hear from an Italian journalist and he can tell us his thoughts about

:24:27. > :24:31.what is happening in Ferrari. We're hearing talk about changes at

:24:32. > :24:35.the top of Ferrari. The stories are coming from the Italian media. What

:24:36. > :24:42.can you tell us? I tell you that it seems that it is true this time

:24:43. > :24:46.after said the same story for many, many years, without the boss moving.

:24:47. > :24:56.It time it seems that it is the right time for him to move. I don't

:24:57. > :25:06.know if he will resign or if he will be resigned, but anyway it seems the

:25:07. > :25:13.end of the story. Nevertheless, he is coming here today tomorrow and he

:25:14. > :25:20.will deny everything, but it seems after more than 20 years it is

:25:21. > :25:25.logical. He wants to have, I don't say other challenges like everybody,

:25:26. > :25:39.like all the sportsmen say, but adult quality of life I suppose.

:25:40. > :25:45.Fiat wants to continue him as boss waiting for another man to put in

:25:46. > :25:51.that top position, but it will take a while between the two nominations.

:25:52. > :25:59.You know, it's a big mess because he has been a big part of Ferrari. He

:26:00. > :26:03.is the hero of the modern Ferrari. Can you put a time scale on this?

:26:04. > :26:13.Can we expect an announcement tomorrow? No, I don't think the time

:26:14. > :26:21.is fixed. He wants to be the man that announces the best results ever

:26:22. > :26:32.by the economical point of view of Ferrari on the level of investment,

:26:33. > :26:35.turnover, profits and he will do that before the Paris Motor Show

:26:36. > :26:42.that starts at the beginning of October. So he wants to take first

:26:43. > :26:48.this satisfaction and then, I think, the time will be mature to find

:26:49. > :26:51.another solution between October and Christmas time. How will his

:26:52. > :27:06.departure affect the Formula One team? I think that nothing will

:27:07. > :27:10.change. Even Ferrari died and the Formula One team continued. They

:27:11. > :27:30.will continue because you cannot change a manager every two weeks

:27:31. > :27:33.like they do in football teams, but we don't know. He needs to create

:27:34. > :27:39.his own experience and then we will be in a position to judge him in a

:27:40. > :27:43.year. It is difficult to judge a man in a hysterical way after two

:27:44. > :27:54.months. Formula One, it is a sport of long times. It would be unfair to

:27:55. > :28:00.say the next man is good or is not good.

:28:01. > :28:04.We should listen with care to what he says. Interesting as well, he

:28:05. > :28:09.likens it to football, you can't be changing managers all the time. But

:28:10. > :28:13.Luca has been there for a long time? He is a stalwart of not just

:28:14. > :28:16.Ferrari, but Formula One. He helped direct the position that Formula One

:28:17. > :28:19.has gone in the past with a very, very strong hand and a lot of

:28:20. > :28:25.passion and heart, but ultimately, it sounds like there is a little bit

:28:26. > :28:29.more to this story than there has been in previous years. He will be

:28:30. > :28:35.difficult to replace. Big shoes to fill? Yes, very, very big shoes.

:28:36. > :28:39.Ferrari haven't been winning for a long time. Somebody who won his

:28:40. > :28:46.World Championship with McLaren 40 years ago, can you believe, is this

:28:47. > :28:51.man. How alive are the memories standing at such an iconic circuit

:28:52. > :28:56.like Monza? It is always very special to be in Monza. I think

:28:57. > :29:04.everybody who comes to Monza has extra emotions because the place,

:29:05. > :29:08.the Italian fan, the Ferrari history, it is always great to be

:29:09. > :29:12.here. Can you believe it is 40 years since you won that championship?

:29:13. > :29:20.Well, it was 40 years, but it feels like a few years ago and again, it

:29:21. > :29:25.was a battle between Ferrari and McLaren. It was Nicky Lauder. You

:29:26. > :29:31.have still got a lot of passion. You are still young at heart, tell me

:29:32. > :29:38.the name is still going on. You have your nephew leading the American

:29:39. > :29:42.Sports Car Championship. But tell us about your grandson? It is great to

:29:43. > :29:50.have both racing and doing well. They have pressure because of the

:29:51. > :29:54.name and they have to perform. One is doing the Formula Renault in

:29:55. > :30:00.England and I hope he can clinch the championship. I'm proud to have my

:30:01. > :30:05.grandchild doing well. Now, I feel old! I did his first interview when

:30:06. > :30:10.he was six years old. What did you make last week at Spa of the

:30:11. > :30:12.incident between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton and who is the

:30:13. > :30:23.strongest to win this? They are pushing a little too hard.

:30:24. > :30:27.At the beginning of the race, if it was the last lap, the last corner,

:30:28. > :30:31.yes, but they are pushing the envelope. They want to win the

:30:32. > :30:40.championship. And I think that's part of the show. Mercedes left it

:30:41. > :30:44.open for the deciders to decide what to do -- for the drivers. Great for

:30:45. > :30:51.the racing fans, great for the championship. Lewis is more

:30:52. > :30:56.emotional. He is a fantastic driver. Nico is more cool, consistent. But

:30:57. > :31:01.each has his own style and it's great for motorsport to have these

:31:02. > :31:06.guys. I like the new Formula One, a lot of overtaking this year, more

:31:07. > :31:10.than ever. I enjoy it. It has been lovely to be to you, thank you very

:31:11. > :31:14.much for joining us today. In fact Lewis Hamilton has not have easy

:31:15. > :31:17.qualifying sessions. We have to go back to Spain in May since he had a

:31:18. > :31:23.concession. Let's look at some of these ones. Monaco, we all know what

:31:24. > :31:27.happened. Yes, this was Nico Rosberg coming down into the corner, he

:31:28. > :31:32.basically locked up, and it meant a yellow flag, you can see Nico

:31:33. > :31:37.Rosberg on the left, he could not go faster. He felt Nico Rosberg, his

:31:38. > :31:42.team-mate, did this on purpose, and it rattled him. Moving on to Canada.

:31:43. > :31:48.We think of this as Lewis Hamilton's playground. Yes, stop

:31:49. > :31:53.start with chicanes. He didn't quite execute it as he had. This was the

:31:54. > :31:57.big spin in Austria. In reality in the previous run he was already

:31:58. > :32:02.quickest, and attacked too much in turn eight, and got a penalty taken

:32:03. > :32:07.away. It was a big, big disaster. Ultimately I think Silverstone was

:32:08. > :32:11.the one. That was a low point. You can see Nico Rosberg going past

:32:12. > :32:18.Lewis Hamilton, he aborts, he thought he had done enough on a wet

:32:19. > :32:21.track. He had not. And also he gave his team-mate a draft down the

:32:22. > :32:24.straight to help him to pole position. He said this was the worst

:32:25. > :32:29.weekend of his life will stop ultimately the brake failure in

:32:30. > :32:34.Hockenheim, he could not do anything about that. You are in the lap of

:32:35. > :32:39.the gods. Off into the barrier. Great recovery in the race but it

:32:40. > :32:44.was a recovery. Ultimately we get to Budapest, Fire on the first lap of

:32:45. > :32:48.qualifying. You just see his frustration, and he cannot believe

:32:49. > :32:53.it has gone wrong once again. So he goes off, has a lovely holiday,

:32:54. > :32:56.comes back after the break, and he must be having thoughts heading into

:32:57. > :33:00.this qualifying session, can it be right? How mentally strong is he?

:33:01. > :33:05.Very strong mentally when things are going his way, when things have gone

:33:06. > :33:10.against him then it seems to boil up inside him. Sometimes it overflows

:33:11. > :33:14.in terms of his reactions, and in terms of the way he attacks. I think

:33:15. > :33:18.his father said pretty well, this could be a good weekend for him, as

:33:19. > :33:21.Nico Rosberg lost in the practice session this morning, and the last

:33:22. > :33:28.preparation before going into qualifying. How much will that be on

:33:29. > :33:32.the mind of Nico Rosberg? He has a solid mind but it is definitely

:33:33. > :33:35.there. The key is to start on pole position and the run into the first

:33:36. > :33:40.corner. It will certainly be exciting. I hope we don't have to

:33:41. > :33:46.see Toto Wolff's devil face any more. We have live qualifying and

:33:47. > :33:51.the build-up coming up in just 40 minutes on BBC1. It has been a long

:33:52. > :33:59.time since Lewis Hamilton has had a poor position, could it be very

:34:00. > :34:01.shortly? -- pole position. Thanks for watching, good I.
