:00:00. > :01:12.Hello and welcome to a sweltering Malaysia. The first on track action

:01:13. > :01:18.will be coming up live in just a few minutes. But here is Allan, to tell

:01:19. > :01:22.us what we can expect over the weekend. The conditions always amaze

:01:23. > :01:27.me, Allan. It's not just the temperatures. The humidify as well

:01:28. > :01:34.makes it feel 0 degrees hotter. The cars feel it, the tyres, the drivers

:01:35. > :01:38.feel like it. It feels leak you're boiling from the inside out.

:01:39. > :01:43.Australia was all about the unknown heading into the new era of the

:01:44. > :01:46.sport. We've come to Malaysia, very different conditions, very different

:01:47. > :01:50.kir suggest. How many unknowns are there still? There's a lot. I don't

:01:51. > :01:55.believe they'll actually get on top of all of them until probably

:01:56. > :01:58.three-quarters fully through the season. The reality is some of the

:01:59. > :02:02.teams will pick up information and they'll understand a little bit

:02:03. > :02:06.more. But when they come here, it's a new environment, as you say and

:02:07. > :02:09.they'll be trying to understand how the car works on this circuit in the

:02:10. > :02:11.and in this heat. the car works on this circuit in the

:02:12. > :02:14.and in this Plenty of unknowns in Australia. But on Sunday night in

:02:15. > :02:19.Australia, the result was even unknown. Daniel Ricciardo put in a

:02:20. > :02:25.really impressive performance but he ultimately lost that second place.

:02:26. > :02:28.His Red Bull car was deemed to have breached fuel regulations banked Red

:02:29. > :02:38.Bull will going to appeal that. But for today, it is Nico Rosberg who

:02:39. > :02:48.leads the driver's championship. No mention there of Lewis Hamilton.

:02:49. > :02:58.Williams have more points after one race. Ben Edwards and Tony are in

:02:59. > :03:03.the commentary box for us this morning. The teams really need all

:03:04. > :03:07.the track they can get this season? Yes, that's right. Several of the

:03:08. > :03:12.teams, Lee, last time out in Melbourne, got hardly any running on

:03:13. > :03:19.the Friday, particularly on the weekend. Lotus had a nightmare of a

:03:20. > :03:26.weekend there. So they're desperate to get a run in. Caterham had a

:03:27. > :03:34.tough time as well. Let's not forget that Pirelli have added an extra set

:03:35. > :03:37.of tyres for this race. Pirelli have the medium and -- and the hard tyres

:03:38. > :03:42.here, so the teams will need to find out a bit about them. But last time

:03:43. > :03:47.in Australia, some teams didn't even get out of the garage. How much is

:03:48. > :03:50.about tyres? As Ben mentioned, they'll have the hard tyre. They'll

:03:51. > :03:54.run on that for this session generally. I think the reality is

:03:55. > :03:59.most of the teams will be trying to understand how the cars and the cool

:04:00. > :04:04.packages are working in this condition. The teams will be trying

:04:05. > :04:08.to just maximise the track time for that as opposed to tyre development,

:04:09. > :04:11.which is maybe more this afternoon. 10 days since we were in Australia.

:04:12. > :04:15.Realistic ale, how much work can be done within that time period to

:04:16. > :04:18.improve these cars? Well, a lot of teams have done a lot of work. Lotus

:04:19. > :04:21.has been mentioned. They've been working extremely hard because they

:04:22. > :04:25.had a lot of troubles. For them, I think just finishing the race will

:04:26. > :04:29.be be a start. They hope to see the fruits of all of their battles, if

:04:30. > :04:32.you like. The for the -- for the other teams at the front of the

:04:33. > :04:36.grid, it is more tweaking, except McLaren. They came with major

:04:37. > :04:43.updates an they say it saves half a second a lap. We'll have to see.

:04:44. > :04:48.Alland and I are going to head out oto -- to the lap. You can get in

:04:49. > :04:54.touch with the hashtag or leave a comment on the BBC sports page.

:04:55. > :04:57.Local time, just coming up for 10 o'clock in the morning. The air

:04:58. > :05:01.temperature, 29 degrees. Tram temperature, up to - -track

:05:02. > :05:07.temperature, up to 38 degrees already. That's partly what puts the

:05:08. > :05:12.strain on the tyres here. It is also an abrasive surface. We know they've

:05:13. > :05:17.gone with these harder compounds in this race, the hard and medium. The

:05:18. > :05:21.green light comes on in the pit lane to indicate that the first session

:05:22. > :05:27.of the Malaysian Grand Prix are under way. Ferrari are quick to send

:05:28. > :05:30.their car out. Fernando Alonso, three-time winner of the maugs Grand

:05:31. > :05:38.Prix is first out on to the track and gives us a view of this track.

:05:39. > :05:45.Allan, this is track that the drivers generally enjoin. It --

:05:46. > :05:49.enjoy. It's her man's best creation. It has tight corners. It's really,

:05:50. > :05:52.from a racing point of view, going to be dictated by the two long

:05:53. > :05:57.straights. The last straight down into the hairpin and then the start

:05:58. > :06:03.and finish, because that's the two DRS zones. There's a real balance in

:06:04. > :06:07.trying to get your car ready, well-balanced with ear dynamic grip,

:06:08. > :06:12.but then you need to be slippery one those straights when the overtaking

:06:13. > :06:17.is going to happen. You like me are looking forward to some of the

:06:18. > :06:22.shots, some of the images we'll be getting here. There are some fast

:06:23. > :06:26.corners, five and six. There's also that fast chicane towards the end of

:06:27. > :06:31.the lap, which was generally flat out, but we're wondering if it is

:06:32. > :06:36.going to be flat out right now. We were talking about that yesterday.

:06:37. > :06:42.Alonso is coming up to a right-hander. Check the drinks

:06:43. > :06:47.button. I think he's definitely going to need that today. But this

:06:48. > :06:52.is a flat out. Normally it was flat out left and right kink. But with

:06:53. > :06:54.the reduced downforce this year, there is question marks. I

:06:55. > :06:59.personally don't think it is going to be flat out. We will watch the

:07:00. > :07:05.onboards to find out over the course of the weekend to see if they are

:07:06. > :07:09.flat out. Here we are riding with Fernando Alonso as he comes to tend

:07:10. > :07:14.of the first lap. It is likely he will come back into the pit. Now,

:07:15. > :07:21.new nose cone on the new front wing on the front of the McMcClaren there

:07:22. > :07:24.of Jenson Button. We got used to the McClaren looking slightly different

:07:25. > :07:28.with almost Nos industrials on the front of the cars but now they have

:07:29. > :07:32.tore ro Rosso or perhaps Force India-looking front of a car. I have

:07:33. > :07:35.to say it's not quite as attractive as it was. But these fittings are

:07:36. > :07:40.part of if updates we are seeing from McLaren on the weekend. Jenson

:07:41. > :07:45.Button was talking about how they've brought nor downforce into the car.

:07:46. > :07:48.That's the aim now. They have a very drivable car at this stage. He's

:07:49. > :07:54.been happy with the way the car has been performing through testing.

:07:55. > :07:56.What they have been lacking is that ultimate downforce, the ultimate

:07:57. > :08:01.grip through the corners. That is part of the package they've brought

:08:02. > :08:06.to the car this weekend. So we're seeing the first nose change of the

:08:07. > :08:10.season. Tony Dobbins is with me. Seasoned writer on all things F1.

:08:11. > :08:16.Tony, what do you think? I like the way it was before, actually? Yes, I

:08:17. > :08:22.agree with you there. Anything they think might find a hundredth or two,

:08:23. > :08:27.they'll go with. So obviously their wind intel is telling them that's

:08:28. > :08:32.the way to go. Of course, knocked the end of the rose out last time in

:08:33. > :08:36.Melbourne during one one of the pit stops. Jenson Button straight back

:08:37. > :08:40.into the pits. We're seeing quite a few cars straight out and straight

:08:41. > :08:43.back in again. The good news is it looks like -- it looks like most

:08:44. > :08:47.people are getting an installation lap in early. That's something we

:08:48. > :08:50.didn't see in Australia and weren't expecting to see either. In the end,

:08:51. > :08:57.most cars did get out there. It shows you what a couple of weeks can

:08:58. > :09:05.do. Already we've seen lots of cars come out. That's quite impressive.

:09:06. > :09:10.It's just Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, the two Red Bulls and the Grosjean

:09:11. > :09:15.gross, the Lotus, who are yet to come out of the pit. Nico Rosberg

:09:16. > :09:21.won the first race of the season in Melbourne. Never had a victory here,

:09:22. > :09:25.but he has done well here. He scored Mercedes' first podium on their

:09:26. > :09:27.return to F1 in 2010. He has a lot of confidence about driving here.

:09:28. > :09:31.His grid position was also that season, 2010, when he started in

:09:32. > :09:35.second place on the grid. Actually led part of the race when he raced

:09:36. > :09:38.for Williams way back in 2009. So he has no fears with this circuit, no

:09:39. > :09:45.doubt about it. And what a brilliant start to the championship it was for

:09:46. > :09:49.him, Tony. OK, Lewis Hamilton wasn't -- wasn't able the fight him an we

:09:50. > :09:52.didn't get that real confrontation between these two, because they

:09:53. > :09:56.certainly seem to have the fastest car, but it was the perfect start

:09:57. > :09:59.for Nico Rosberg. It was and I think we might well see that battle here

:10:00. > :10:03.because I expect it will be very quick. You know, if Lewis has a

:10:04. > :10:09.decent, reliable run, you can bet they'll both be at the front an we

:10:10. > :10:14.might have to see some not team orders but some sensible team

:10:15. > :10:19.interplay. Yes, well having a look there as the car comes back into the

:10:20. > :10:24.pits. Of course it was hear last year - the main controversy last

:10:25. > :10:31.year was about the team orders or lack of them, or Vettel obeying

:10:32. > :10:37.them. Rosberg was catching Hamilton in the closing stages of the race,

:10:38. > :10:41.had a faster car, but he was told to hold station. Absolutely. I think

:10:42. > :10:46.Nico was a bit peeved about that. But he was very mature about it. In

:10:47. > :10:49.contrast with Red Bull, there was a lot of controversy there. They were

:10:50. > :10:52.very sensible about it. But you know, you know that Nico wasn't

:10:53. > :10:56.happy about that and he certainly wouldn't be happy if it happened

:10:57. > :10:59.this year. No, that's right. This is interesting. He was on the brakes

:11:00. > :11:05.coming into the pits here and very unstable. It's interesting, he had

:11:06. > :11:09.to give a big old -- as he came into into the pits. They are standing

:11:10. > :11:16.hard on the brakes there. But he has already done an intel laigs lam. It

:11:17. > :11:21.indicates the brake wire system not set up perfectly just yet. Problem

:11:22. > :11:25.with the car. Yes, locked up the rear, problem with the car. It is

:11:26. > :11:29.very unusual to see that. Spot on there, Ben. It seems a little bit

:11:30. > :11:33.unusual, especially when everything seemed to go according to plan last

:11:34. > :11:37.time out. So let's keep an eye on that and hope that Nico Rosberg

:11:38. > :11:40.doesn't have any problems. Meanwhile, Romain Grosjean and

:11:41. > :11:44.Daniel Ricciardo have both gone out and done their installation laps.

:11:45. > :11:52.We're just waiting for Sebastian Vettel now. McLaren has some of this

:11:53. > :11:58.tank over that front wick wing. This is an idea to give them an idea of

:11:59. > :12:03.the wind flow on that front wink. What they're trying to do is get

:12:04. > :12:07.more air flow underneath and then through the car and then using the

:12:08. > :12:09.bottom and the diffuser at the back of the car to generate as much

:12:10. > :12:13.downforce as possible. That's basically what the teams are all

:12:14. > :12:18.trying to achieve. But they've gone about it in different ways this

:12:19. > :12:23.year, Tony. We still have quite different nose design. Of course,

:12:24. > :12:27.Mercedes themselveses have a very low nose. I think that's probably

:12:28. > :12:37.the most attractive treatment. I'm not a fan of the Ferrari nose, itch

:12:38. > :12:42.I've got to admit. But that looks very neat. Sebastian Vettel does

:12:43. > :12:47.come out for his installation lap. The four times world champion

:12:48. > :12:53.three-time winner here himself, like Alonso. And when he did take that

:12:54. > :12:57.victory from Mark Webber in fairly controversial circumstances but went

:12:58. > :12:59.on to dominate the latter part of the season. At that early stage of

:13:00. > :13:03.the season we didn't really know that Red Bull had that level of

:13:04. > :13:09.dominance that we were going to see later on. They were struggling with

:13:10. > :13:14.the tyres at that point of the season if you remember. Vettel was

:13:15. > :13:19.pushing for every point he could get. Absolutely. When we got to

:13:20. > :13:22.mid-season it looked like Mercedes was in the ballpark. Then they steam

:13:23. > :13:27.rolled them. Of course, the news about Red Bull, the stories about

:13:28. > :13:33.Red Bull, really coming out of Melbourne, is all about Daniel

:13:34. > :13:38.Ricciardo's exclusion. Yes He drove beautifully, didn't he? Not just in

:13:39. > :13:41.the race, but in qualifying. The fastest in fall fiing. Brilliant all

:13:42. > :13:47.weekend. Absolutely. Finishes second to the delight of the home fans. Yes

:13:48. > :13:53.Then what happens? For me, it was a tragedy, because it was such a feel

:13:54. > :13:58.good story for F1. Mark Webber is retired from Formula One. You have

:13:59. > :14:02.in new Australian, smiley star they all took to and loved. He finishes

:14:03. > :14:10.second. They talk about the future of Australia beyond 2016. Then he's

:14:11. > :14:16.kicked out. Australia wakes up on Monday morning to the newspapers

:14:17. > :14:20.which said "Grand Fast, instead of Grand Prix. To me that was a missed

:14:21. > :14:24.opportunity. You have to regulate the sport. I just wondered whether,

:14:25. > :14:29.perhaps, it might not have been better on this occasion to have a

:14:30. > :14:34.chat behind closed doors about, you know, the operation of these fuel

:14:35. > :14:37.flow meters an not have that start to the season. But I know a lot of

:14:38. > :14:41.people would disagree with that. I know. Let's quickly explain what it

:14:42. > :14:45.was all about. Of course, part of the new regulations is that there is

:14:46. > :14:50.a fuel flow rate of 100kg per hour. Yes That is assessed by a new device

:14:51. > :14:52.that's fitted to all the cars. It's supplied by an independent

:14:53. > :14:58.manufacturer, but all the teams have to go out and buy it and fit it to

:14:59. > :15:04.their cars Yes. That tells the FIA whether you're within the fuel flow

:15:05. > :15:10.rate or not. That's right. You have a fuel flow limit and fuel fill

:15:11. > :15:15.limit. In this instance, Red Bull said, the experts said according to

:15:16. > :15:20.the device they had actually exceeded the fill. We haven't seen

:15:21. > :15:27.anything in the figures. You hear it in the background. I stress, that

:15:28. > :15:36.it's not known. It will come out in the appeal on the 14th of April. Red

:15:37. > :15:40.Bull said the census -- consensus from Friday was inaccurate. So they

:15:41. > :15:45.went from the data provided by their injectors. Now, the gist of their

:15:46. > :15:49.defence is going to be that in actual fact, the steward's decision,

:15:50. > :15:54.which says that they were asked to turn down the fuel flow, was based

:15:55. > :15:58.on a technical directive which has no regulatory value. It's actually,

:15:59. > :16:03.they complied with the rules as it's written. That's, I think, is going

:16:04. > :16:06.to be their defence. It's a very important issue for Formula One.

:16:07. > :16:09.It's important they get this resolved quickly. Under these new

:16:10. > :16:11.rules you're going to have situations where people are testing

:16:12. > :16:14.things, they push the limits. Formula One teams do all the time,

:16:15. > :16:18.whether it's pushing the limits of the car on the track or, indeed,

:16:19. > :16:24.with the regulations. And, clearly, Red Bull are looking to do that a

:16:25. > :16:28.bit. Yes. They feel disgruntled that the device, from their point of

:16:29. > :16:33.view, didn't deliver what they wanted. Ultimately, the FIA has to

:16:34. > :16:38.make a ruling and it will be interesting to see how it comes out.

:16:39. > :16:43.It is. It is almost a test case. It is a good point you make make. They

:16:44. > :16:48.say they need a result quickly but we'll be three races in by the time

:16:49. > :16:54.we get the result. What will they do here, what will they do in bar rain?

:16:55. > :16:57.It's a fascinating issue. Cars have done their installation laps now.

:16:58. > :17:03.Everybody ec whiching over the various bits of equipment. A few

:17:04. > :17:07.little bits and pieces on the Marussia team this weekend. Cooling,

:17:08. > :17:12.of course, is a crucial part of making a car fast here in Malaysia

:17:13. > :17:16.because of the tie temperatures. Esteban Gutierrez about to leave the

:17:17. > :17:19.pit lane for Sauber. A difficult start to the season for Sauber. Both

:17:20. > :17:23.drivers talking yesterday about how the car is actually overweight at

:17:24. > :17:27.this stage. It would be tough to get these new spec cars down to the

:17:28. > :17:30.weight limit, even though the weight limit have been increased for this

:17:31. > :17:34.new season. Very difficult for teams to build a car down to that level

:17:35. > :17:38.with all the new bits and pieces associated with the hybrid systems

:17:39. > :17:42.on the car. And the car is definitely overweight. Overkwagth

:17:43. > :17:48.even with Gutierrez dput in the car, and he's one of the lightest at 61

:17:49. > :17:53.kilos. There is no chance for Gutierrez's team-mate, is there? We

:17:54. > :17:57.were talking about that yesterday. He's about 14 kilos heavier. That's

:17:58. > :18:01.right. There's going to be a -- it's going to be a difficult one for him.

:18:02. > :18:08.I'm talking rubbish. More than half a second, but even so. Even

:18:09. > :18:14.three-tenths per kilo, he is over the half a second. Let's get down to

:18:15. > :18:21.the pits now. Allan is at McLaren. Yes, we're at McLaren. One of the

:18:22. > :18:24.teams that's made a big updates for this race. Ben as you mentioned

:18:25. > :18:28.before on the installation lap, it is more of a sweeping noise. I

:18:29. > :18:34.personally like the visual aspects of it. But this apparently gives

:18:35. > :18:39.more downforce and obviously a little bit more at the front. Just a

:18:40. > :18:44.little bit more in their mid corner just to flick it round. Also, they

:18:45. > :18:47.have some tweaks at the back of the car we haven't quite seen yet. And

:18:48. > :18:50.the two cars are running different cooling packages. The reason is they

:18:51. > :18:55.have two different ideas. They want to see what the best solution is. In

:18:56. > :19:01.two practice runs they're going to try both on both cars and make a

:19:02. > :19:05.decision afterwards. Beautiful images there. There's the test and

:19:06. > :19:08.development driver for Sauber. As we see, Gutierrez is out there. I'm

:19:09. > :19:14.glad to say that we've been joined by another man who is a testing and

:19:15. > :19:26.development driver for the Formula One team, for the Caterham driving

:19:27. > :19:33.Team Alexander Rossi. You're racing GP2, you're back into that, and

:19:34. > :19:36.looking forward to that. Yes, GP2 unfortunately isn't here this

:19:37. > :19:40.weekend. But we will be in bar rain next week. Just came from the test

:19:41. > :19:45.in bar rain. But happy to be here. Happy to be at the first Grand Prix

:19:46. > :19:52.myself this year. A big weekend in terms of Caterham. Of course, Tony

:19:53. > :19:57.fer nen dez, the Malaysian owner of Caterham. There's always a lot after

:19:58. > :20:01.attention for Caterham at this Grand Prix. Particular cus errix son,

:20:02. > :20:06.actually, but, yes, this is our home race. Tony is obviously quite a

:20:07. > :20:10.prominent figure in Malaysia and Australia didn't really go as we had

:20:11. > :20:14.hoped. So we're hoping to bounce back here and take advantage of

:20:15. > :20:19.anything that comes out way. Of course, looking at these front wing

:20:20. > :20:22.design, the Caterham front wing design has caused a bitter of mirth

:20:23. > :20:27.in the offseason. It is slightly different to what the other teams

:20:28. > :20:30.have gone for. Any changes to this? Or will they stick with this system

:20:31. > :20:34.farce you know at the moment? I think all the teams are going to

:20:35. > :20:37.bring up this come the European round. What Caterham has come up

:20:38. > :20:42.with at the moment is a bit of an unknown. But, yes, everyone is

:20:43. > :20:51.looking to change, improve it, as much as they can before Barcelona.

:20:52. > :20:58.Onboard with ridiculous -- Christian Eriksen this year. He had a bit of a

:20:59. > :21:02.baptism of fire with all the issues with these Upower plants and then of

:21:03. > :21:07.course a sad retirement in the race. He seemed to be going OK in the

:21:08. > :21:12.Grand Prix but, sadly, one of the non-fin anyone fers. Yes,

:21:13. > :21:18.absolutely. I think everyone needs to realise that we were able to get

:21:19. > :21:22.a car in on merit. The fact that both cars didn't finish, obviously

:21:23. > :21:26.kind of quashed that highlight of the weekend. Having said that, I

:21:27. > :21:31.think everyone is quite pleased with the way the car is going. If we can

:21:32. > :21:40.get the reliability out of it, I think we will see a step forward.

:21:41. > :21:47.One of the heroes sh -- One of the heroes on screen now -- one of the

:21:48. > :21:55.heroes of Melbourne on screen now. Where the exclucs of Daniel

:21:56. > :21:59.Ricciardo, he ended up with a fine fifth place finish. That was the

:22:00. > :22:04.mark of the man. He was beating himself up about not being on the

:22:05. > :22:08.podium. He was saying had he not done that, he would have been on the

:22:09. > :22:14.podium. He is the star of the season for sure. If you look at last year,

:22:15. > :22:19.the one in Canada, and the other one where they took the exhaust off and

:22:20. > :22:25.he found some time to drive in Texas, he had an excellent race

:22:26. > :22:29.there. We just saw Felipe Massa, who is the testing and development

:22:30. > :22:33.driver for Williams. So he is also keeping an eye on things. Another

:22:34. > :22:36.guy you're racing against, Alex. Let's get a quick update on the

:22:37. > :22:42.conditions at the moment. Lee. Thanks, Ben. At the moment, it is 39

:22:43. > :22:45.degrees track temperature. The humidity is around about 60%.

:22:46. > :22:52.There's no chance of rain for the moment. Before we came on air, Allan

:22:53. > :22:55.and I went into one of the garages and the temperatures is there is

:22:56. > :23:00.just colossal. When they're starting up the car, there's so much heat

:23:01. > :23:06.that radiates from the cars, it's just unbelieven. It's always

:23:07. > :23:11.interesting to see the drivers run the circuit. That never ceases to

:23:12. > :23:15.amaze me. I was talking to Kevin Magnussen and he said he went out on

:23:16. > :23:20.the track at 12 o'clock, the hot test part of the day, just to get

:23:21. > :23:25.used to the conditions. I don't know if you've run it at all? No, but

:23:26. > :23:32.I've walked it. That counts. Thank you, Lee. Over the weekend, on our

:23:33. > :23:36.coverage, Mark Webber will be talking about the demands of racing

:23:37. > :23:39.under these kind of conditions. Malaysia and Singapore are the two

:23:40. > :23:42.most difficult, yaelly, in terms of the heat and the huh many I hadty

:23:43. > :23:46.for the drivers. And Mark Webber will be taking us through how

:23:47. > :23:49.drivers prepare and some of the testing demands on the bodies from

:23:50. > :23:55.that point of view. So that will be very interesting. Don't forget you

:23:56. > :24:01.can get in touch with us by tweeting us using the hashtag or comment on

:24:02. > :24:06.the Facebook page. Good to have some of your questions an comments

:24:07. > :24:11.already. Abdul saying should they install speakers at the end of the

:24:12. > :24:15.car to intimidate last year enjoin signs. This has been one of the big

:24:16. > :24:22.stories. Thank you, Abdul. Yesterday, when Sebastian Vettel was

:24:23. > :24:28.asked about the engines, he made a derogatory comment, which sadly, we

:24:29. > :24:33.cannot repeat. He also said when he fell on the pit wall, he said it was

:24:34. > :24:38.quite yetter than being in a bar. So he seems very anti-it. But that's

:24:39. > :24:46.not across the board. Some of the other drivers are quite positive

:24:47. > :24:51.about it. It's interesting actually. Other drivers say you can hear more

:24:52. > :24:53.things going on. It hasn't got the ground-shaking violence that, you

:24:54. > :24:58.know, the old engines had but it's just different. I think it's

:24:59. > :25:02.something we'll get used to. Alex, kwhaegs your take on the new engine

:25:03. > :25:06.sound? To be honest, this is the first time I've heard this morning.

:25:07. > :25:09.I think the tone is fine. It's just the volume is a bit quiet. At the

:25:10. > :25:12.same time we have this discussion every time there's a massive

:25:13. > :25:16.regulation change. People don't like the way it looks. Now they don't

:25:17. > :25:20.like the way it sounds. It was the same issue when we went from the VN

:25:21. > :25:25.to the V8s. I think people will get used to it. It's one of the things

:25:26. > :25:29.it will take a good couple of races for people to wrap their heads

:25:30. > :25:35.around. I quite agree with that. It is all about the quality of the

:25:36. > :25:40.racing. Of course in GP2, you'll now be louder than Formula One cars.

:25:41. > :25:45.Yes, I'm very proud of that. Let's talk about that. There was talk over

:25:46. > :25:52.the winter whether these cars would end up not much quicker than GP2.

:25:53. > :25:56.But as it turns out, they are still a good chunk faster. The teams are

:25:57. > :26:00.talking about developing them four seconds faster during the season. So

:26:01. > :26:05.I don't think there's any problem there. Do you? No, we were just in

:26:06. > :26:09.bar rain this past week and we were find at a similar pace. But I think

:26:10. > :26:14.with all the issues everyone was having in Bahrain, I won't be like

:26:15. > :26:21.that in a week. They still have a solid, three or four seconds on us,

:26:22. > :26:25.which should be the way, I think. They should be a step up, yes.

:26:26. > :26:28.Ferrari is one of the most successful taements here in

:26:29. > :26:41.Malaysia. Michael Schumacher seemed to like this place right from the

:26:42. > :26:54.very beginning when he came here. Then there was Eddie ir-Irvine.

:26:55. > :27:00.There was the one in 2012 when they said it was a far worse start than

:27:01. > :27:05.they'd experienced this season. Yesterday when they were talking

:27:06. > :27:10.about it, they said they're not going to be despondent, there's

:27:11. > :27:15.potential in the car. You're right about Ferrari, that fantastic 2001,

:27:16. > :27:22.when Michael and Reubens both went off and came back on again. They

:27:23. > :27:29.were in the pan seats. Yeah, Michael certainly adored this place and if

:27:30. > :27:35.you watch him through five and six, it was fantastic. Alonso is

:27:36. > :27:43.currently -- currently quickest. It is very early days here. Jenson

:27:44. > :27:49.Button is third, Felipe Massa is in fourth. A few of you have been

:27:50. > :27:56.getting in touch and telling us where you're listening. You may be

:27:57. > :28:05.anywhere round the world, listening to us on Radio 25, who have their

:28:06. > :28:11.25th anniversary this year. Jason says, "Insomnia is useful when F1

:28:12. > :28:17.practice is on the other side of the kworld." I hope you can stay with

:28:18. > :28:26.us, Jason. Kevin says, "The best feeling about rough, unwell and not

:28:27. > :28:30.sleeping, is watching F1." Great to have your company wherever you are

:28:31. > :28:35.around the world. Whatever the time is with you, it is 23 minutes past

:28:36. > :28:39.10 in the morning here in Malaysia. Interestingly enough, caffeine is

:28:40. > :28:44.one of the things they put in McLaren's drinks for Malaysia.

:28:45. > :28:52.Really? Yes, I was amazed by that. I thought it was a no-no. But the

:28:53. > :28:58.caffeine as well as the salts, your proteins, they put the caffeine in

:28:59. > :29:02.there as well. Alonso goes fic -- quicker again there. Alex, the back

:29:03. > :29:07.end of that car was moving quite around a lot. Yes, I think here,

:29:08. > :29:17.even more so in Australia, you are going to see a lot of traction

:29:18. > :29:21.limitations. We all know how much more torquey these engines are and

:29:22. > :29:27.how difficult it is to control that. I think as the weekend progresses

:29:28. > :29:39.that will be reduced but in this practice session, there there'll be

:29:40. > :29:43.a lot of it, I think. What you call a traction event is what we call

:29:44. > :29:47.sliding, pretty much, I suppose? Yes, correct. Traction is obviously

:29:48. > :29:53.when the wheel is straight you're trying to go to power and the wheels

:29:54. > :29:56.are just spinning. When you have the steering lock again, you try to go

:29:57. > :30:01.to power in the back and it steps out, I guess. Both are negative. I

:30:02. > :30:06.would say... Oh, oh, we have a Lotus stopped. Oh, dare. This has become a

:30:07. > :30:10.bit of a familiar story. We were hoping things were better. It is

:30:11. > :30:15.Romain Grosjean's car and several marshals have gathered around it

:30:16. > :30:17.already. They have backed off for a moment because obviously cars are

:30:18. > :30:21.still going around the track. It has just stopped. There's no dank. It

:30:22. > :30:25.looks like it's come to a halt somewhere. That's a poor start again

:30:26. > :30:30.for Lotus. Stopped at turn 10 in fact. So a difficult beginning for

:30:31. > :30:36.Romain Grosjean. Pastor Maldonado has done one installation lap so

:30:37. > :30:41.far. But that's so far. Magnussen now is second by the way, just a

:30:42. > :30:52.moment ago. So McLaren is running second and third with Vergne fourth,

:30:53. > :30:57.bot Bottas in fifth. Let's go down to Allan. This field is going to be

:30:58. > :31:03.more representative of lap times than what they were in Melbourne. If

:31:04. > :31:07.you look down to centre fin of engine cover, there is a cover,

:31:08. > :31:12.that's something they tested in Bahrain. It is for -- it is for

:31:13. > :31:16.cooling, trying to get all that hot air out of there. That's more than a

:31:17. > :31:20.thousand degrees cell use that that thing is working out. Talking about

:31:21. > :31:25.traction, rare tyres. Definitely this is going to be a traction

:31:26. > :31:29.limited race. Yes, a couple of hairpins as we were talking about,

:31:30. > :31:34.the last corner, the penultimate corner as well. Tourn 4 is -- turn 4

:31:35. > :31:40.is pretty tight. And turn 9 they drop down to about 45 miles per

:31:41. > :31:45.hour. So several key corners where getting the speed down is crucial.

:31:46. > :31:50.They're getting a bit of a hammering. Lotus looks like they may

:31:51. > :31:55.be losing another session. When they're looking at mileage, it is

:31:56. > :32:04.just what they don't need at the moment, is it? Z no. But they

:32:05. > :32:07.managed 30 laps in the race in Australia, which is more than they

:32:08. > :32:12.were bargaining on. So they've got something. It's awful to see that,

:32:13. > :32:16.really, particularly with a driver like Grosjean, who finished last

:32:17. > :32:19.season in such an impressive way. We were all hoping he would kick on

:32:20. > :32:24.from there and become one of the front runners. So it's not happy

:32:25. > :32:31.days for Romain at the moment. It's tough. He seems to be coping with it

:32:32. > :32:39.reasonably. He got a bit Eddy, he -- edji, we heard it in Melbourne, a

:32:40. > :32:46.bit of frustration creeping. He talked bit that yesterday. He said

:32:47. > :32:50.we had changed things in the car but there was still frustration there.

:32:51. > :32:53.It was interesting, I was talking to Allan about that -- he was talking

:32:54. > :32:58.to Allan about that at the end of last season and he said initially he

:32:59. > :33:06.would get very ooir rate and frustrated on the radio and he'd

:33:07. > :33:14.come on the radio, all heated up, and saying, "I've got no graec! I've

:33:15. > :33:23.got no brake." But he's calmed down then. Maybe it's coming back a bit.

:33:24. > :33:28.Just watching Ross Ross, he has gone third fastest. Hamilton fifth

:33:29. > :33:35.fastest. We'll just ride with him for a moment. This is turn six. He's

:33:36. > :33:42.not flat out by my means at this stage. Quick right-hand turn at turn

:33:43. > :33:46.seven. Turn eight. Then a little short straight down towards turn

:33:47. > :33:48.nine. Hard on the brakes here and it is an uphill exit as well. Important

:33:49. > :33:52.to get the traction out of this corner. Just lifting up slightly.

:33:53. > :33:56.And then over the crest and over this tricky little right-hander,

:33:57. > :34:00.turn 11. Again it's important to get out of this corner quickly. And then

:34:01. > :34:04.down through the fast shi chain, turns 12 and 13. As you can see,

:34:05. > :34:08.he's taking things relatively steady at this point. We were talking about

:34:09. > :34:13.Romain Grosjean. We've seen him head back towards the pit. We think it's

:34:14. > :34:17.a battery problem, in fact. That's an interesting one. The energy

:34:18. > :34:23.recovery controller storage system, the battery system. We did catch up

:34:24. > :34:25.with Romain Grosjean yesterday. Tom Clarkson caught up with him and

:34:26. > :34:31.asked him if there were any positives that actually did come out

:34:32. > :34:36.of Australia. I think there's always positive issues. Once you look at

:34:37. > :34:42.it, on Sunday, of course, that's not the way we would like to think about

:34:43. > :34:47.the race, but that's the way we did. And, learn, yeah, we had some more

:34:48. > :34:56.work to do. We had some work to do on the brakes and the car is a bit

:34:57. > :34:59.different. So we want to work and I'm very hopeful that Renault have

:35:00. > :35:03.has done a bit of work and we have done a lot. Of course, nothing is

:35:04. > :35:07.going to be perfect. But if it can be better than it was last time, we

:35:08. > :35:13.can move from there, improve and get to a good level of performance.

:35:14. > :35:17.Well, we've just seen Adrian Sutil have a spin coming into the pit lane

:35:18. > :35:22.entrance. That's a bit of an unusual one, Alex. Yes, you'd have to hope

:35:23. > :35:28.that was possibly a brake by wire issue rather than driver error.

:35:29. > :35:32.That's rare to see --rare to see, especially in a practice session.

:35:33. > :35:37.Let's explain this. What do we mean by break by wire -- brake by wire?

:35:38. > :35:41.Because of the energy recovery systems and how active the car needs

:35:42. > :35:44.to be with harvesting energy on the brakes, there's a brake balance

:35:45. > :35:47.shift that is quite extreme. It always was the case with just

:35:48. > :35:52.standard curves we've had the past couple of years. But that was

:35:53. > :35:59.something you were able to kind of compensate with the driver and there

:36:00. > :36:06.was a quick shift lever that you could adjust the brake. But this

:36:07. > :36:10.year with the shifts being so big, it's kind of impossible for the

:36:11. > :36:14.drivers to change the brakes as much as they would need to for a corner.

:36:15. > :36:17.What they have had to do is make the rare brakes kind of work in a system

:36:18. > :36:23.that is talking to the harvesting unit. And so the font brakes --

:36:24. > :36:27.front brakes work as normal. When you press the paddle, you're

:36:28. > :36:31.controlling the front brakes as you would. But it's an electronic

:36:32. > :36:34.rare-braking system. If you don't get that working correctly, it can

:36:35. > :36:37.cause a lot of issue because the drivers don't get the feel of the

:36:38. > :36:41.deceleration or the feel of the pedal they've had in the past. It

:36:42. > :36:47.has caused some issues. But as each day goes by, teams are getting more

:36:48. > :36:51.and more accustomed to it. In fact, it cause adden issue for Kamui wi in

:36:52. > :36:58.Melbourne. Initial he thought it was his err or but it turned out to be

:36:59. > :37:03.the system? Exactly. Because it was the second install lap. When he took

:37:04. > :37:10.the start, basically the rare brakes were shut off. So when we went to

:37:11. > :37:16.hit the pedal, he didn't have the deceleration in the rear and he had

:37:17. > :37:27.to use the brakes. It was very much not his fault and a very unfortunate

:37:28. > :37:30.way to start the season. Just watching the development driver for

:37:31. > :37:33.Lotus. While we have a little bit of a pause, we've been through the

:37:34. > :37:41.first half hour. So teams have used that extra set of tyres that they

:37:42. > :37:46.get to use for the first 30 minutes of FP1. Now there will be a little

:37:47. > :37:52.bit of a pause. Let's catch only. Some of -- some of the comments the

:37:53. > :37:58.drivers made yesterday. We see there is a different front wing on the

:37:59. > :38:04.McLaren, a different nose section as well. Ron Dennis is talking about a

:38:05. > :38:08.half second improvement here at Sepang. If that translates, do you

:38:09. > :38:12.think that will allow you to compete with Mercedes? No. They're at least

:38:13. > :38:18.a second quicker than us. I hope we get a second out of the car this

:38:19. > :38:21.weekend, but I doubt it around here. It's a very difficult section in

:38:22. > :38:24.termings of high speed. We're not quite there on high speed yet. So I

:38:25. > :38:29.don't think it will be that much. But maybe at the circuits that have

:38:30. > :38:33.less high-speed corners, we could find a good chunk. But anything is

:38:34. > :38:36.good right now. It is only two weeks after the last race and if we can

:38:37. > :38:39.keep bringing improvements every Grand Prix, that's the only way

:38:40. > :38:44.we're going to get close to Mercedes. So Jenson Button hoping

:38:45. > :38:47.for good things, but whether they're going to be able to actually do some

:38:48. > :38:51.damage to what Mercedes have come up with in terms of that performance

:38:52. > :38:55.package, we'll have to wait and see, Tony. I think they'll be

:38:56. > :39:00.well-chuffed with half a second race. I think anybody would.

:39:01. > :39:03.Generally they operate on a prinsof a tenth a race. That's their target.

:39:04. > :39:09.So half a second, if it really is half a second, that's a good step.

:39:10. > :39:25.Thanks for your views coming in using the hashtag BBF1 or the BBC

:39:26. > :39:31.Facebook. Connor thinks Jenson Button will finish ahead of

:39:32. > :39:36.Magnussen. Alex, you've done Renault 3. 5 and GP3 over the years. How do

:39:37. > :39:40.you see him as a competitor at the moment? And also, which of those

:39:41. > :39:46.formulas, how different are they and which one is better for moving up to

:39:47. > :39:52.Formula One? Right. So I raced with Kevin in 2012 in world series and,

:39:53. > :39:56.you know, obviously, he's a big talent and that was proven last

:39:57. > :40:01.week. I think that attend of the day, GP2 is a slightly better

:40:02. > :40:11.platform just from the standpoint that you're on basically the same

:40:12. > :40:15.power as the F1 cars. Having said that, Kevin did GP2 and he was still

:40:16. > :40:22.quite successful. So I think that both are more than a feeder

:40:23. > :40:28.championship into F1. This guy we're watching on track at the moment,

:40:29. > :40:33.Daniil Kvyat, he didn't come out of either. I guess if you have the pace

:40:34. > :40:42.an you have the talent, then you'll figure it out. That's been proven by

:40:43. > :40:45.the rookies. It seems in the years past people team -- teams have been

:40:46. > :40:49.cautious with who they put in the cars. This year, it's changed a

:40:50. > :40:52.little bit. Hopefully it will change in the future where teams can put

:40:53. > :40:56.the confidence in the young guys. Let's hope so. Allan, I know you

:40:57. > :40:59.wanted to add some comment about what we were talking about with in

:41:00. > :41:03.McLaren? Yes, just the fact that coming from half a second. That was

:41:04. > :41:06.one big development. I don't think they're going to be in a position to

:41:07. > :41:11.do anything like that. The reality is that the comment that I thought

:41:12. > :41:14.was important was when Jenson said they were at least one second ahead

:41:15. > :41:17.when he was talking about Mercedes. Looking at the analysis of the last

:41:18. > :41:21.year, then I would definitely concur with that. Buzz after the safety car

:41:22. > :41:26.when Nico Rosberg had to really go flat out, he had that amount of time

:41:27. > :41:31.in his pocket. Yes, no, it's very interesting. And we'll see how they

:41:32. > :41:35.get on this weekend. Fernando Alonso -- Fernando Alonso just relaxing at

:41:36. > :41:37.the moment. He is fastest in this session but sitting at the back of

:41:38. > :41:44.the Ferrari garage, not planning to come out for a little while,

:41:45. > :41:51.presumably. A very small difference between himself and Magnussen. A 420

:41:52. > :42:00.also for Rosberg. That's the top three. Jenson Button is a little

:42:01. > :42:04.slower. Then Hamilton 42. 6. Daniil Kvyat as we mentioned, very

:42:05. > :42:07.impressive. Of course, Tony, he became the youngest ever

:42:08. > :42:11.point-scorer in Formula One as a result of his performance in

:42:12. > :42:16.Melbourne. Of course, nowadays, we do pay points down to tenth, so you

:42:17. > :42:19.can't necessarily compare that all through history of Formula One,

:42:20. > :42:25.because for many years you only got points down to six. But it was still

:42:26. > :42:28.impressive? It was still an impressive performance. The key

:42:29. > :42:34.thing with him, every time he got into the car, it almostic loos like

:42:35. > :42:40.he was born into it. There was no learning phase. He was on it

:42:41. > :42:45.straightaway. I just think it's been a great start for him. We've had two

:42:46. > :42:51.cars in the top 10 as well. He is born of this new generation of

:42:52. > :43:01.drivers. You have to look at him in the same light as Magnussen, Bottas.

:43:02. > :43:06.Kift Daniil Kvyat, very, very impressive. Melbourne he'd never

:43:07. > :43:10.been to before, but this is a track that Daniil Kvyat has raced at in

:43:11. > :43:14.the past. Yes, I think we can anticipate another good, strong

:43:15. > :43:18.performance from him. Tom Clarkson actually caught up with him

:43:19. > :43:24.yesterday. Let's see what he had to say about coming to Malaysia. Just

:43:25. > :43:28.talk us through this coming weekend and whether - have you raced here

:43:29. > :43:34.before? What are your expectations? The last time I've been here was

:43:35. > :43:39.four years ago an it was also very, very hot. So I won my first ever

:43:40. > :43:43.race in single-seaters here so it is quite a particular track for me,

:43:44. > :43:48.happy memories. While it is a bit different to Formula One, so we have

:43:49. > :43:52.to do a job from zero now obviously and try to learn as much as we can

:43:53. > :43:57.during the pre-practice. Do you think the car will be competitive

:43:58. > :44:00.here? I hope so, definitely. We've been doing good step forwards all

:44:01. > :44:05.the time, every time we're on the track. I think this time we also

:44:06. > :44:09.have a chance to do good step forward. There's Romain Grosjean

:44:10. > :44:12.just explaining, presumably, what stopped on the car, while everybody

:44:13. > :44:16.trying to work out what happened. Let's get back down to the pit lane.

:44:17. > :44:21.Allan, I think you're at Mercedes now? Yes, I am. They're changing the

:44:22. > :44:26.enjoin cover. This new enjoin cover is much wider at the rear. Basically

:44:27. > :44:30.that is for extra cooling, trying to evacuate that hot air to go out the

:44:31. > :44:35.back of the car. At the moment, they're just putting the camera

:44:36. > :44:40.position on in both. So they've done a back-to-back in this session with

:44:41. > :44:43.both the cars, side by side. If you look right underneath where all the

:44:44. > :44:47.engineers have sat on the pit wall, underneath they've put a little bit

:44:48. > :44:52.of dry ice on there, just to keep them a little bit cooler. What about

:44:53. > :44:56.the driver? Allan, you've raced in many, many hot places around the

:44:57. > :44:58.world, all sorts of areas of the world through Formula One and

:44:59. > :45:02.through sports car racing. How does this rate from your point of view?

:45:03. > :45:07.This is one of the worst, I have to say. It's not the temperature. I'm

:45:08. > :45:11.Scottish, so therefore, we're not extreme -- exactly acclimatised to

:45:12. > :45:16.heat from birth. But it's the humidity. You just can't get rid of

:45:17. > :45:20.it. When you have your helmet on, everything else, you only have a

:45:21. > :45:22.small area that can sweat that can actually get rid of that

:45:23. > :45:25.temperature. So you feel like you're boiling from the inside. I remember

:45:26. > :45:29.the last time when I was here to race, I just got out the car and I

:45:30. > :45:33.just wanted to pass out. It was the worst #2350e8ing -- feeling I've

:45:34. > :45:37.had. But, ultimately, the adrenaline keeps you going. It was interesting

:45:38. > :45:40.to note what you said earlier on, about the McLaren, putting a little

:45:41. > :45:44.bit of claf pseudoephedrine in there. It is allowed but you don't

:45:45. > :45:49.want to have too much. Fair enough. Readk some of your comments - thank

:45:50. > :45:54.you for getting there touch with us - a couple more questions an

:45:55. > :45:58.comments." Do you think a double points race is positive in a season

:45:59. > :46:01.where many teams are lernling a new car?" I think many people are

:46:02. > :46:04.feeling doesn't points last race isn't positive from any point of

:46:05. > :46:07.view. Although there are some people who do like the idea and perhaps

:46:08. > :46:12.think that it will add some spice to the enof the season. We'll have to

:46:13. > :46:19.wait and see. Mark Hill saying, "Who do you think will win this weekend?

:46:20. > :46:24.Skwots what do you reckon, Tony? I can't see past Mercedes on this one.

:46:25. > :46:28.I have a feeling it might be Lewis. Lewis looked very confident in his

:46:29. > :46:35.press hearing yesterday. Felipe Massa on screen at the moment, who

:46:36. > :46:41.was so unfortunate to be taken out by Kamui Kobayashi. Do you know if

:46:42. > :46:46.Kamui wi has spoken to Felipe after that race. Because Felipe was very

:46:47. > :46:50.upset. Yes, as you understand he would be. But he understands these

:46:51. > :46:56.are now consider r cars and it is something you have to deal with.

:46:57. > :47:11.They were quite good friends before and I think remain to be. Bottas --

:47:12. > :47:15.Bottas is currently 10th fastest. We only have one car on track at the

:47:16. > :47:21.moment. The question is really how good is that Williams car. That's

:47:22. > :47:27.something that Tom asked Bottas yesterday afternoon. Having seen the

:47:28. > :47:38.potential of your rifles now, do you think the FW36 is a race winner? Not

:47:39. > :47:42.yet. . I think Mercedes is too strong, too quick. It is a different

:47:43. > :47:46.kind of circuit, but I think they are still the main team to beat. We

:47:47. > :47:50.meet to keep pushing. But also from the back there are many other teams

:47:51. > :47:54.getting better and better. So we need to keep getting better as well.

:47:55. > :47:58.How do you race your chances this weekend, because Williams have

:47:59. > :48:02.always been very strong here at Sepang? Last year I had one of my

:48:03. > :48:07.better results. I was 11th with a car from last year. Of course, car

:48:08. > :48:12.is zimpbt, but at the moment the feeling is it should be a - I mean,

:48:13. > :48:18.at least, as good as Melbourne. So, yeah, it's going to be an exciting

:48:19. > :48:27.weekend. Hopefully can get another improvement of my so far best result

:48:28. > :48:40.of my career. Bottas there hoping for many, and hoping for a podium

:48:41. > :48:43.finish this weekend. By finishing in fifth, Bottas has already doubled

:48:44. > :48:47.the score that they managed to score throughout the whole offer the 2013

:48:48. > :48:50.season, which seems remarkable, but that's how poor their 2013 season

:48:51. > :48:55.was. Everyone hoping that Williams will have a stronger time this year.

:48:56. > :49:07.A few more of your comments and where you're watching or listening

:49:08. > :49:12.to us for this first practice." Watching in bed for the weekend,

:49:13. > :49:18.with a possible broken toe." And great to have all your comments from

:49:19. > :49:25.wherever you are. In fact, Andrew Hooper in Perth in Australia saying

:49:26. > :49:29.he remembers the turbos of Renault in the BMW era but no-one complained

:49:30. > :49:36.about the noise then. But the noise is different then. It is not the

:49:37. > :49:42.same No, it isn't. We were a lot gruntier, deeper, more violent

:49:43. > :49:49.altogether. I think that's something to to with the periods where you had

:49:50. > :49:54.1500 hrp at one stage. Different kinds of engines altogether. Allan

:49:55. > :49:58.is now at Sauber. What can you see there, Allan? We have a fantastic

:49:59. > :50:02.view of the steering wheel. You can see the complexity of it. Now, we've

:50:03. > :50:07.heard that the drivers are having -- drivers are having to work a

:50:08. > :50:15.tremendous amount more with all of the switches and knobs on there to

:50:16. > :50:18.maximise getting the time. You will hear the SOC or state of charge and

:50:19. > :50:23.that's how the hybrid system, which we have to remember has got 10 times

:50:24. > :50:28.the emergency capacity of last year, and double the horsepower boost, so

:50:29. > :50:33.it is a significantly more important part of the performance. But each

:50:34. > :50:36.steering wheel is designed perfectly for each individual driver. They get

:50:37. > :50:42.the buttons exactly where they want and they have to know just it

:50:43. > :50:50.absolutely blind, like you do with your computer keyboard. It is a

:50:51. > :50:53.complicated-looking piece of kit. Alexander Rossi with us. Did you

:50:54. > :50:58.have a hand in discussing with what does go on the steering wheel of the

:50:59. > :51:02.car? Yes, absolutely. I think all four drivers sit down and have an

:51:03. > :51:08.input a little bit into what they're doing. Marcus obviously has the main

:51:09. > :51:13.input because they're the ones hopefully driving every race this

:51:14. > :51:18.year. But as Allan said, every driver has different needs, some

:51:19. > :51:27.prefer rotorries and some prefer the thumb wheels. It is all personal

:51:28. > :51:32.preference. We see a replay there, the car moving around a lot again,

:51:33. > :51:38.we see with the Italians, nice to see an F1 car being a bit of a

:51:39. > :51:42.handful, just watch from the onboard here. Had just been on one of the

:51:43. > :51:46.buttons on the steering wheel just before that little slide. But is it

:51:47. > :51:51.a more complicated environment now as a driver? Yes, and no, I think

:51:52. > :52:01.there's parts of it that you don't do as much in terms of - you don't -

:52:02. > :52:05.it's all automatic thing. So you're not waiting to get to the corner and

:52:06. > :52:07.pushing the button every point. From that responsibilitipoint it's

:52:08. > :52:11.easier, but on the straights it's quite a bit easier, but a lot of the

:52:12. > :52:15.information or a lot of the things you're changing, you prediscuss, so

:52:16. > :52:18.it's not you're doing it as a reaction, you're doing baiz you know

:52:19. > :52:23.you have to do it at this point at every lap. So what are you changing

:52:24. > :52:28.on the straights? In the previous era, you would have been changing

:52:29. > :52:33.break balance with that manual brake balance change, but what kind of

:52:34. > :52:38.things are you changing now. It's still changing the brake balance,

:52:39. > :52:42.but it's more how the brake by wire technology is working. State of

:52:43. > :52:47.charge is another thing. And then the cooldown laps or slowdown laps

:52:48. > :52:50.are much busier, you have what's called sustainable energy which you

:52:51. > :52:55.can run all the time and then you have un sustainable energy which you

:52:56. > :53:00.use for your performance laps. That's about a three settle change

:53:01. > :53:03.-- setting change that you're going from a slowdown lap to a cooldown

:53:04. > :53:09.lap. In terms of the actual race laps and the qualifying laps it's

:53:10. > :53:12.very similar. We're watching Kevin Magnussen once again. Fernando

:53:13. > :53:20.Alonso is fastest from Magnussen second. Rosberg is third, Vergne

:53:21. > :53:24.fourth, Button fifth, then Hamilton, Gutierrez 8th, followed by Bottas,

:53:25. > :53:31.Raikkonen is down in 12 at the moment ahead of Massa. Bianchi 14th,

:53:32. > :53:37.Ericsson, Chilton, no times yet established for Perez in the forz

:53:38. > :53:43.India, nor for the Lotus of Maldonado and Grosjean. We know

:53:44. > :53:49.Grosjean is out of this. There's a good lap from Ross sow, but the

:53:50. > :53:53.others who have not set a lap time are yet the two Red Bulls, Daniel

:53:54. > :53:56.Ricciardo but Sebastian Vettel, but Daniel Ricciardo has just gone out

:53:57. > :54:01.on circuit, so we may see some flying laps from Daniel Ricciardo.

:54:02. > :54:05.The man who was excluded last time, the brilliant second place on the

:54:06. > :54:10.road. And Tom asked him yesterday how did he react to the news of his

:54:11. > :54:19.disqualification? Oom, my God. Bliemy, strewth.

:54:20. > :54:24.Crikey. It was - not one of those things too good to be true, but it

:54:25. > :54:27.was - yeah. A bit of a bummer. I was like, does this really have to

:54:28. > :54:31.happen now? Obviously such a high from the weekend, everything worked,

:54:32. > :54:34.you know, nearly perfectly qualifying in the race, you know, I

:54:35. > :54:38.don't think we're ever going to touch the Mercedes. I think we did

:54:39. > :54:42.the best we could and then that was - it was a bit of a Downer, but, at

:54:43. > :54:47.the same time, I was just happy that I put in a good weekend. I put in

:54:48. > :54:52.the quality and a race, the front row start was - was already, wasn't

:54:53. > :54:57.the best get-away off the line, but I recovered that in turn one, and I

:54:58. > :55:02.did all I could. In any case I was still pleased with the results. Just

:55:03. > :55:06.watching a replay of Jean-Eric Vergne, that little lockup down at

:55:07. > :55:09.nine, but Daniel Ricciardo was a great performance from him and he'll

:55:10. > :55:14.be hoping to try to repeat it here in Malaysia. Let's quickly get back

:55:15. > :55:20.to the pits because Lee is with test and development driver, we saw him

:55:21. > :55:26.on the screen a few moments ago for Williams, Felipe Massa. Yes, Filipe,

:55:27. > :55:32.this is much more Brazilian, what is going on in your car. The

:55:33. > :55:36.temperature is so hot. We see Felipe Massa putting his helmet on. It's

:55:37. > :55:42.really warm. I have to say, more than in my country, but, you know, I

:55:43. > :55:48.mean, few changes, I think they're going for a second run now, and just

:55:49. > :55:53.comparing the two cars. They have - they're trying different things in

:55:54. > :56:00.both cars. So we'll see. But, you know, naturally the heat is going to

:56:01. > :56:04.be the main thing in Malaysia, of tyre degradation. I'm sure there are

:56:05. > :56:10.things looking to minimise the loss on that. So we'll see. But so far

:56:11. > :56:15.been pretty good for us. How is your role going with the Williams F1

:56:16. > :56:21.team. It's going really well for me. With such a big opportunity to step

:56:22. > :56:26.up in my career and to experience this new world in in Formula One,

:56:27. > :56:30.everything is new for me, and I'm learning as much as I can, and I'm

:56:31. > :56:36.really looking forward to the - to the times that I'll be in the car.

:56:37. > :56:40.So which will be next week in Bahrain. OK, hope it goes great.

:56:41. > :56:45.He's going to have an opportunity in first practice in Bahrain, that's

:56:46. > :56:50.good to hear. And Felipe Massa will be racing against... He is doing GP2

:56:51. > :56:54.again this year? Yes, correct. He's going to have a busy weekend that

:56:55. > :56:58.one. What about yourself, any chances you're going to see you out

:56:59. > :57:02.in any of the practice sessions that we know about? To be honest, I don't

:57:03. > :57:09.know. It's a race by race situation, and to be honest, the main focus is

:57:10. > :57:16.definitely GP2 this year. Fair enough. OK. We'll just hearing this

:57:17. > :57:20.Max Chilton has got an electrical problem. He's not doing much

:57:21. > :57:26.running. He has done eight laps so far in this session, currently 17th

:57:27. > :57:33.fastest as we watch Sebastian Vettel and just seeing also we have that

:57:34. > :57:36.spinner earlier. Yeah, that was Marcus Ericsson who had the spin as

:57:37. > :57:41.well earlier. But otherwise no other problems. So Magnussen, he's now

:57:42. > :57:46.fastest in this session. He's gone ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne. 41. 2,

:57:47. > :57:51.and there's Kimi Raikkonen just having a little bit of a slide as

:57:52. > :57:55.well. Getting out of shape. Kimi was talking yesterday - let's see what

:57:56. > :58:00.happened to Marcus Ericsson. This was down the last corner. Lost the

:58:01. > :58:03.left front and around came the back. Again, is that something perhaps the

:58:04. > :58:08.brake wire bar not giving him what he needs there? Potentially. That

:58:09. > :58:13.back corner has always been quite prone to the inside wheel lockups in

:58:14. > :58:16.the past. You'd imagine that it is something to to do with the bricking

:58:17. > :58:19.system. Do you think that's the new favourite excuse of all racing

:58:20. > :58:24.drivers in Formula One? Yes, definitely, provides a good one,

:58:25. > :58:30.doesn't it? And - but to be fair, I mean most of the issues have been

:58:31. > :58:34.caused by that. And still early days as you say. Kimi Raikkonen had a bit

:58:35. > :58:38.of a tough time in Melbourne. Certainly was a little bit off the

:58:39. > :58:43.pace of Fernando Alonso generally through practice hand in the race

:58:44. > :58:46.itself. And clearly wants to see a few differences on the car. He was

:58:47. > :58:50.talking yesterday about the fact that the car is not quite giving him

:58:51. > :58:56.what he wants or needs. And that's something that he's looking for some

:58:57. > :58:59.new parts to be delivered on that score. Right now, he's on track. So

:59:00. > :59:03.let's just watch the remainder of this lap. Listen in to the radio as

:59:04. > :59:08.well: Lots of cars looking like they're struggling with rear-end

:59:09. > :59:13.grip. That's actually to Lewis Hamilton. So, yes, plenty of cars

:59:14. > :59:18.perhaps struggling with traction off the rear of the cars. Kimi Raikkonen

:59:19. > :59:23.now turn 9, looking a - looking piecemeal through the corner, isn't

:59:24. > :59:29.it, Tony? It is. I was talking to somebody who was watching the cars

:59:30. > :59:33.in Melbourne, it said it didn't look like Kimi. Alonso was attacking,

:59:34. > :59:37.Kimi didn't have a front bend basically. There was some, you know,

:59:38. > :59:41.some comments I think attributed to him on Ferrari's website, he said

:59:42. > :59:45.yesterday, so it wasn't that, it was basic set up and just hasn't got the

:59:46. > :59:49.car the way he wants it. Tom talked to him yesterday to ask him what he

:59:50. > :59:53.is looking for on that Ferrari. Let's hear what he had to say. What

:59:54. > :00:02.bits of the car are holding you back? Just a feeling. The front bend

:00:03. > :00:09.is a bit tricky. So we'll see. It's the big way of driving around the

:00:10. > :00:15.corner. Hopefully once we get the new - after a few races, we are in a

:00:16. > :00:20.better position. We cannot promise anything, but that's the plan, and

:00:21. > :00:23.that's what I feel will help us. Well, in the meantime, Kevin

:00:24. > :00:27.Magnussen has just stopped at the side of the track, just on the way

:00:28. > :00:34.in to the pit. So hopefully might be able to get him back, but Magnussen

:00:35. > :00:41.just stopping out on track, and let's listen. I lost power. I

:00:42. > :00:44.switched the engine off. He's been given a bit of a shove and just

:00:45. > :00:48.rolling around the edge of the corner into the pit lane at the

:00:49. > :00:52.moment. Let's hope he can make it all the way back they can get to

:00:53. > :00:55.work on it. He's fastest in this session currently, but obviously

:00:56. > :00:58.still little glitches are going to occur. That's something we can

:00:59. > :01:03.expect to see as we go through these next few races before the teams get

:01:04. > :01:06.their heads around how to look after these powerful units and solve all

:01:07. > :01:09.the problems that might occur. Just crawling along at the moment. I

:01:10. > :01:14.think he's trying to wiggle the steering wheel almost to give him

:01:15. > :01:20.some rolling momentum, but it's not happening for him. Magnussen fastest

:01:21. > :01:26.from Vergne, Raikkonen third fastest now. So despite the car looking a

:01:27. > :01:30.little bit of a handful, Raikkonen going third. Alonso third, Rosberg

:01:31. > :01:35.fifth. Magnussen has stopped now. So looks as though few guys are running

:01:36. > :01:38.up to try to give him a push. Some of the Marshalls there will

:01:39. > :01:43.hopefully get him a bit further down the pit lane. Sebastian Vettel, by

:01:44. > :01:49.the way, has now down a timed lap. He's done a 143. 1, but Vettel is

:01:50. > :01:53.currently 13th fastest. Let's go back down to the pits at Force

:01:54. > :01:57.India. Thanks. I was about to say that it's not been a good morning

:01:58. > :02:01.for Force India. They have managed to get Nico Hulkenberg on track, but

:02:02. > :02:07.as you can see, Sergio Perez's car is very much a work-in-progress. The

:02:08. > :02:13.official line is the down time for some checks on the car. Although

:02:14. > :02:16.somebody told me they haven't pinpointed the problem is and won't

:02:17. > :02:21.get back out in the session with Perez per. It looks like a surgical

:02:22. > :02:26.operation going on. Yes, one of the me cans said the fuel tanks -

:02:27. > :02:29.suggests, sorry, one of the mechanics has got one of his hands

:02:30. > :02:34.inside the fuel tank, to suggests he has got a fuel surge issue. There's

:02:35. > :02:39.a lot of fast corners around here, and the fuel, one side of the tank

:02:40. > :02:44.to the other, he doesn't necessarily pick up all of the time if you do

:02:45. > :02:48.have something. There's two fuel pumps, so therefore they're on the

:02:49. > :02:52.inside to see if it is a visual thing. This does take a long time

:02:53. > :02:58.when you have got, like you say, a surgical mission going on. Yes,

:02:59. > :03:02.Sergio Perez has been - not looking particularly happy. Not wanted to

:03:03. > :03:07.speak to us, put it that way. That's why we haven't got any comments from

:03:08. > :03:10.him. A bit of a hard start for the reason for Sergio Perez, but he did

:03:11. > :03:14.get that final point in the end in Melbourne after the exclusion of

:03:15. > :03:18.Ricciardo, so at least he came away with something. He has got a good

:03:19. > :03:24.finishing record. Go back to the end of 2012 since Perez officially

:03:25. > :03:30.didn't finish a race. Even though silver ston last year he was a

:03:31. > :03:33.nonruner. We're watching Kimi Raikkonen. A bit smoother. Third

:03:34. > :03:40.fastest in this session currently. Yes, he goes fastest. 1 minute 40.

:03:41. > :03:44.8. Good luck for him. We're saying this is a good track for Ferrari

:03:45. > :03:49.historically. I wonder if we're going to see that type of

:03:50. > :03:52.performance. We got a spin on the ner Ferrari. Alonso spinning

:03:53. > :03:57.backwards, that's not a sight you see often. He hasn't stalled the

:03:58. > :04:00.engine, but Fernando Alonso, that's down at turn eight. He's back on

:04:01. > :04:04.track once again. I was about to say, they both have very good

:04:05. > :04:10.records here with Alonso with his three victories, he took his first

:04:11. > :04:13.ever poll position at F1 at this circuit, and interestingly,

:04:14. > :04:18.Raikkonen took his first ever victory at this track. But, Alex,

:04:19. > :04:22.let's see what Alonso did here. Talk me through it a bit. At the air

:04:23. > :04:27.base, he lost the car, possibly a bit too much entry speed, but, you

:04:28. > :04:31.know, I mean, very small error that didn't really seem to cost him that

:04:32. > :04:38.much. He wasn't locked up for too long, the tyres should be OK.

:04:39. > :04:42.Hopefully not the case. A lot less rear downforce on these cars because

:04:43. > :04:47.we have lost the exhaust blowing effect. We have always lost a wing

:04:48. > :04:50.at the rear which was providing a lot of the downforce and does seem

:04:51. > :04:56.to have made quite a big difference, hasn't it? Yes, coupled that with

:04:57. > :05:01.the extra torque, that's on demand basically, makes the rear of the car

:05:02. > :05:06.very tricky, but at the same time, I mean, F1 cars in the past have

:05:07. > :05:13.always developed it in - I think by the middle of the year, that will be

:05:14. > :05:18.settled down quite a lot. Meanwhile, Hamilton has gone fastest, he's on a

:05:19. > :05:23.quicker lap again as we can see from the split times. Rosberg is taking

:05:24. > :05:26.things fairly steady. Watching Lewis Hamilton here, he's on a quick lap.

:05:27. > :05:31.You can see the body of the language, he goes through that 12,

:05:32. > :05:35.13 sequence of the quar. Changes direction nicely. Little bit of tyre

:05:36. > :05:39.smoke, that was interesting. He's pushing quite hard. But it almost

:05:40. > :05:45.seems the level of grip on the track is quite low this morning. You see a

:05:46. > :05:49.lot of break lockup than normal, and I think some of -- some of that

:05:50. > :05:54.comes down to track conditions. Let's see what the lap is going to

:05:55. > :06:02.be. He's gone fastest than anybody in the middle. It's 1. 40. 6. Gains

:06:03. > :06:06.another tenth or two a second. A useful little improvement. Looking

:06:07. > :06:11.back on the session one time from last year, Mark Webber was fastest

:06:12. > :06:17.in session one last year on 1. 36. 9. So we're about four - a little

:06:18. > :06:20.bit under four seconds at this stage. Similar gap to what we saw in

:06:21. > :06:27.Melbourne and was a right front that he lost, yes, going down to turn 14

:06:28. > :06:33.on that lap. And a few more of your comments coming in using the

:06:34. > :06:37.hashtag. Philipa asking, do you think we have to wait for the

:06:38. > :06:41.Spanish Grand Prix before we see a reliable Lotus car? I have to tell

:06:42. > :06:46.you that Grosjean, as we know is out of this session already. And

:06:47. > :06:50.Maldonado has not gone back out. So Tony, she could be right, it might

:06:51. > :06:54.be Spain. They'll probably take that if you offered them Spain. Yes. We

:06:55. > :06:58.certainly like to see them get reliable before that. But who knows.

:06:59. > :07:01.Jason asked: Withless likelihood with a safety car is there likely to

:07:02. > :07:05.be an issue with fuel in Malaysia? Now, Melbourne was one of the

:07:06. > :07:10.toughest on fuel consumption, Malaysia, not quite as tough as some

:07:11. > :07:15.of the other circuits, Alex? Yes, that is true. Fuel consumption isn't

:07:16. > :07:20.going to be a massive worry, the bigger worry is the heat and the

:07:21. > :07:23.amount of time you're at full throttle on this lap when you

:07:24. > :07:28.compare it to Melbourne, it's about 15 to 20% more full tloten usage,

:07:29. > :07:33.with the reliability as it is, it is quite a challenge. Let's get down to

:07:34. > :07:38.the pit lane. Romain Grosjean. Can you tell us what happened? We drain

:07:39. > :07:43.out the battery with a problem on the MUH, I think. We can fully

:07:44. > :07:46.recharge and go for a few laps. Certainly would be. And what's your

:07:47. > :07:50.expectations for this weekend? I know the Lotus team has worked so

:07:51. > :07:58.hard since the Australian Grand Prix two weeks ago. We did. So far it's

:07:59. > :08:04.not very successful. Of course, we would like to get points, but first

:08:05. > :08:09.we have to access where -- assess where our car is and how we run it.

:08:10. > :08:14.Do you think the chassis is a good chassis, but the technical problems

:08:15. > :08:19.are holding you back. We never get manage to have a good place to see

:08:20. > :08:29.how the tyres are behaving, but I'm hoping yes. I hope sow, Romain.

:08:30. > :08:35.Thanks, Alan, Nico Hulkenberg heading into the pit.. Hulkenberg

:08:36. > :08:40.also had a bit of lockup as you can see down in turn 9, again in the a

:08:41. > :08:44.major factor. We see the onboard view, the left front locking, with

:08:45. > :08:47.the orange side wall markings. We'll see the medium tyre come out later

:08:48. > :08:52.on today. That will be shown in the second practice session. We'll get a

:08:53. > :08:55.little bit more of a comparison between the two different tyre types

:08:56. > :08:59.and the idea of the lap time difference between them. Probably

:09:00. > :09:05.over a second, we'll have so see how they stand up to the treatment

:09:06. > :09:08.around here as well on this abrasive surface in these high temperatures.

:09:09. > :09:12.Thanks for your comments. We have been discussing the new look and the

:09:13. > :09:15.sound of F1 this season. Daniel saying: I think the 2014 season will

:09:16. > :09:19.get more and more interesting as teams become better adjusted to

:09:20. > :09:23.their cars. I think you're right there, Daniel. Teams like Lotus, of

:09:24. > :09:27.course they will be showing their form once they get some reliability.

:09:28. > :09:32.Going to be interesting to see how that having the order settles down

:09:33. > :09:37.the next couple of races. Neil comments also: Early stages for the

:09:38. > :09:41.new F1 guys, give them a chance. Let's go Mercedes. He likes the fact

:09:42. > :09:47.that it's been shuffled up, Tony. I think that's the key point. It gets

:09:48. > :09:52.not deedus but when you got same old story for four years, you bring in

:09:53. > :09:56.new rules, it's what F1 should be about you do change the order up,

:09:57. > :10:02.and it's interesting, isn't it, when you have got Vettel on the back foot

:10:03. > :10:05.a little bit. It's a good story. And Mercedes have also done a fantastic

:10:06. > :10:12.job over the winter, and they deserve to be having the success we

:10:13. > :10:16.saw in Australia. Just mentioning Vettel as you said, he is currently

:10:17. > :10:20.7th fastest, been a bit of an improvement in this session from

:10:21. > :10:24.him. So that will give him a bit of confidence. Ricciardo is currently

:10:25. > :10:28.11th. Yes, going back to the sound issue, I think we also got to

:10:29. > :10:32.remember comparing with the 80s turbos, we're actually recovering

:10:33. > :10:38.energy now, not throwing all the energy out of the exhaust. So not

:10:39. > :10:42.going to sound as loud. Felipe Massa, that's the same area that

:10:43. > :10:50.Alonso went. Yes. Just watch it on the onboard now. Got a quick turn-in

:10:51. > :10:57.here. A bit wide. So, it came, I think, a bit late on turning. Again

:10:58. > :11:01.he recovers it well. The engine doesn't stall, and he manages to

:11:02. > :11:05.continue around the lap. So both Bottas and Massa are currently on

:11:06. > :11:08.circuit. Jim, you have been tell it is us how you have been following

:11:09. > :11:12.practice this morning. Are you managing to stay awake if you're in

:11:13. > :11:19.the UK. Rachel says she's on the Sofia with a cup of tea. Gary says

:11:20. > :11:23.he's in the US catching up on the web listening to us during this

:11:24. > :11:29.session. Sorry, just trying to pick up the - what he was saying here. He

:11:30. > :11:33.says he's listening to America's -- American's driving around in

:11:34. > :11:37.circles, worst than turbo noise, he says. We have got Americans here.

:11:38. > :11:42.Gary, I'm glad you're listening to. Zach Des: F1 time after a week of

:11:43. > :11:47.exams, he says it's nice to relax. March rare says, making finish

:11:48. > :11:52.course work more bearable. James: Watching while finishing an essay

:11:53. > :11:57.off. Bottas just finishing his lap. He's still 10th fastest there. Craig

:11:58. > :12:01.watching from Scotland, near 3am, lecture for university at 9am, do

:12:02. > :12:06.you think they'll allow Formula One and an absence -- as an absence

:12:07. > :12:11.excuse. I'll have to go to Alan for the question. It's a university of

:12:12. > :12:17.Scotland, is he going to get away with it? I didn't hear you there. I

:12:18. > :12:23.was listening to a McLaren coming blasting in. And the V6 deafened out

:12:24. > :12:28.our voice. It's Craig from Scotland saying whether he'll get away with

:12:29. > :12:33.F1 for an excuse for missing his lecture at university. I got away

:12:34. > :12:38.from a lot of secondary college doing the same thing. Didn't do you

:12:39. > :12:48.any harm, did it? Our reigning world endurance cham there. Reporting from

:12:49. > :12:56.the pit lane says. Now, Kevin Magnussen's car did make it back to

:12:57. > :13:01.the pits. We saw that a little while ago. For some reason it was limping,

:13:02. > :13:04.but they did get it back. Magnussen's point of view, he will

:13:05. > :13:07.be coming back out in the remaining part of this session. Only 22

:13:08. > :13:11.minutes to go. Seems to be rushing buy this first 90 minutes here in

:13:12. > :13:17.Malaysia. We're watching Jules Bianchi on circuit, he's currently

:13:18. > :13:28.16th fastest. He's done a 17. 44. 3. What about the usual battle between

:13:29. > :13:32.March rue sha or Caterham. March rue sha -- March rush sha

:13:33. > :13:38.Kamui Kobayashi is in trouble. Yes, I know they had an issue with the

:13:39. > :13:42.car and had to take the floor off. He'll be out. That's a great shame

:13:43. > :13:46.to here. So again this - it's chesting isn't it, Lotus and

:13:47. > :13:52.Caterham seems to be going through a tough time. Yet Caterham testing,

:13:53. > :13:55.certainly I -- Caterham got more miles from Renault than anybody else

:13:56. > :13:59.on that particular test. Absolutely, I think it's just - a new problems

:14:00. > :14:03.cropping up. They're not having the same issues. So many different

:14:04. > :14:07.things going on, if you think there's 500 potential problems you

:14:08. > :14:16.can have, there's all 510 and they're just discovering those 10, I

:14:17. > :14:23.think. A hard start for the season for Caterham. Maldonado has gone

:14:24. > :14:27.out. Ferrari in the pit lane. Hamilton is now fastest for

:14:28. > :14:31.Mercedes. Ferrari though up there of Raikkonen in second. Rosberg for

:14:32. > :14:37.Mercedes in third, Button and Magnussen for McLaren fourth and

:14:38. > :14:41.fifth. So it's Mercedes versus Ferrari. The first of the Renault

:14:42. > :14:50.power units is actually Vergne, in sixth ahead of Vettel. So tore

:14:51. > :15:00.re-Ross sow ahead of Red Bull. Daniil out in 14th. Rosso with the

:15:01. > :15:04.Renault power unit. Ninth for Hulkenberg. And we have to keep

:15:05. > :15:09.reminding ourselves that Williams with Mercedes power this a year,

:15:10. > :15:12.they switched again from Renault, and Williams, speaking of that,

:15:13. > :15:17.since Melbourne, something they really looked at and studied in

:15:18. > :15:20.detail. Looked at both what engine manufacturers were likely to provide

:15:21. > :15:24.and made the decision to go to Mercedes. Certainly seems to be a

:15:25. > :15:30.good decision. Maldonado on circuit going quite slowly. This unique twin

:15:31. > :15:36.tusk approach to the new regulations regarding the nose cone of the front

:15:37. > :15:41.wing set up. Different look to the Lotus. But as Romain Grosjean was

:15:42. > :15:44.telling Alan, we haven't really had a chance to see how this car can

:15:45. > :15:49.perform. There's smoke out of the back of it. He's going slowly. A

:15:50. > :15:55.puff of smoke there and things don't look great, do they? No, not at all.

:15:56. > :16:01.No. It's quite ta bit of smoke now. Yeah. Trying to get that back to pit

:16:02. > :16:06.lane. I hope that's not an issue on the engine. Well, you have to say

:16:07. > :16:12.that is looking very worrying. That looks like an oil - or ring failure,

:16:13. > :16:17.like an old-fashioned engine failure. Very much a blue tinge to

:16:18. > :16:25.the smoke, isn't it? That's not a good sign. He's limping along, and

:16:26. > :16:29.he's puffing. And is not good. Not a good look at all with blue smoke

:16:30. > :16:36.coming out of the back of the Lotus. Let's listen. Stop the car, stop the

:16:37. > :16:41.car. Stop the car, please. Switch off. Oh dear, oh dear. I don't this

:16:42. > :16:45.the Lotus boys are going to get much sleep again. Grosjean stopping

:16:46. > :16:49.earlier, although he did say to Alan he might get back out, but that

:16:50. > :16:54.looks much more worrying. Might be a turbo problem, or certainly looks

:16:55. > :16:59.more of the mechanical problem than an ERS or NGUH problem. Yes,

:17:00. > :17:03.definitely. Well, Tony, it looks like more... Like you said more

:17:04. > :17:06.overnight work for those guys. They didn't have a happy time in

:17:07. > :17:14.Melbourne. One time they left the circuit 6am. Got back to the hotel

:17:15. > :17:17.and then the two seat er got back out. Not good. Trickling into the

:17:18. > :17:22.pit lane at the moment. Pastor Maldonado who moved from Williams to

:17:23. > :17:26.Lotus over the offseason of course, and I wonder what he's thinking

:17:27. > :17:30.about that right now. Like the different performances from the two.

:17:31. > :17:34.We saw Kevin Magnussen stop a little bit - a little while ago. And

:17:35. > :17:38.obviously had some sort of problem. Let's see if we can find tout more.

:17:39. > :17:45.Lee is with Jonathan Neil. I heard the technical term was that Kevin's

:17:46. > :17:50.car went into lump home move. It's not the best description. These cars

:17:51. > :17:54.are - have a number of safety features on and complex things to

:17:55. > :17:59.protect the engine if something goes on. We had a sense that the back of

:18:00. > :18:04.the car was getting hot and it triggered a mode that powered down

:18:05. > :18:07.the engine. It's not a major problem for us. Kevin thought he could coast

:18:08. > :18:11.into the pit lane and judged that wrong. We stopped about how many

:18:12. > :18:17.feet short of the entry. So we did the walk of shame to recover the

:18:18. > :18:21.car. It's fine. Carry on the rest of the morning. I think it's very early

:18:22. > :18:24.to tell. I mean, humidity has dropped. Temperature has dropped.

:18:25. > :18:30.This weekend is a big test for us all. Up and down the pit lane. In

:18:31. > :18:33.particular for cooling of these engines, it's going to get this

:18:34. > :18:37.afternoon. And with these turbo-charged engines, we have to be

:18:38. > :18:43.careful about inducing a knock in the engine. They get hot. So it's

:18:44. > :18:46.too early to say that we're comfortable. We'll see thimp. Long

:18:47. > :18:49.days here for the guys working so hard, and Lotus is having problems

:18:50. > :18:53.with both cars. Probably going to be a long night for them. How much - we

:18:54. > :18:57.always focus on the drivers, bru these guys in the team, the garage

:18:58. > :19:02.is so hot. It is, but I think for the last two or three years now,

:19:03. > :19:06.there has been a real effort in the pain lane. Being kind, shall we say,

:19:07. > :19:12.to the mechanics, maybe five years ago. If you look at the general

:19:13. > :19:16.level of attention to hydration, pos chur, manual handling, all that kind

:19:17. > :19:20.of stuff. Just the body mass index of the pit lane has changed

:19:21. > :19:25.enormously in five years. So it's - they have to be athletic, to do pit

:19:26. > :19:29.stops in the kind of times they're doing, everyone has to be fit, awake

:19:30. > :19:32.and alert. But it's demanding, but there are worst things to do in

:19:33. > :19:35.life. So there's no moaning from anybody behind me. Very hot at the

:19:36. > :19:41.moment. We normally have these conversations when it's pouring in

:19:42. > :19:46.rain. Normally you stop me when the wheels has gone off, so it makes a

:19:47. > :19:50.change talking to you when things are going reasonably well. Jonathan

:19:51. > :19:55.Neil, good to see him here. A lot of his work been based back at the

:19:56. > :20:00.factory as well. But he was in chatting away with Eric earlier. I

:20:01. > :20:04.saw, Tony, it's interesting - this new management structure at the top

:20:05. > :20:08.of McLaren, Jonathon Neil and Eric very much a part of that. There

:20:09. > :20:11.might be somebody else who comes this to take that role from

:20:12. > :20:15.Jonathan. That's something they announced and has been quite a lot

:20:16. > :20:19.of speculation who that might be. Obviously Ross, one of the names

:20:20. > :20:23.mentioned, for the moment he says he's quite happy on a boat with his

:20:24. > :20:29.fishing rod. But have to see what happens. There is a vacancy there at

:20:30. > :20:34.the high managerial level. I was actually quite surprised when Eric

:20:35. > :20:39.went there because I thought that is kind of McLaren boy deal with

:20:40. > :20:46.things. They deal with things within. That's indicative of them

:20:47. > :20:55.identifying... I really struggle... He struggled to stay on the track, I

:20:56. > :20:59.the think -- I think he said. Struggling then, Daniil Kvyat down

:21:00. > :21:03.to 14th place. He's done a few laps on those tyres of course. He's done

:21:04. > :21:08.some 15 laps. Final quarter of an hour of this first practice session

:21:09. > :21:11.now. Hulkenberg 8th. That's an improvement. Nico Hulkenberg slight

:21:12. > :21:15.improvement in time. 8th fastest. We know there are problems with Sergio

:21:16. > :21:19.Perez, we're in the expecting him to be back out. Lewis Hamilton has come

:21:20. > :21:25.back out on circuit. Currently fastest on 1. 40. 6, fastest than

:21:26. > :21:28.Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari, and Nico Rosberg. Fernando Alonso also out on

:21:29. > :21:32.circuit. Let's get a bit of a bearing on the relative performance

:21:33. > :21:36.of these cars. Alonso has done 13 laps so far exactly the same number

:21:37. > :21:41.of laps as Hamilton, but actually Alonso straight back in. Alan, what

:21:42. > :21:46.have you got on Daniil Kvyat. Nothing really on him, but more the

:21:47. > :21:49.case of the comment. His comment when he said that it was undrivable.

:21:50. > :21:53.That usually means that the rear of the car is very unstable and that's

:21:54. > :21:58.a particular picture of this circuit. Because quite a lot of very

:21:59. > :22:02.fast entry car corners and ones that are quite long, and if you're

:22:03. > :22:05.braking and down shifts, for example, the second last corner on

:22:06. > :22:10.the big back straight, the rear and stability, really makes it quite

:22:11. > :22:13.stricte -- tricky and the driver loses confidence. He had a fantastic

:22:14. > :22:16.run in Melbourne, but he's still very young and early in his F1

:22:17. > :22:20.career and confidence is going to be a key thing for him. He'll need to

:22:21. > :22:25.get that rear stablised before the race. Yes, that's right. Beear --

:22:26. > :22:28.we're just looking in the Red Bull garage at the moment. Sebastian

:22:29. > :22:33.Vettel, he's done nine laps in this session. But with only 12.5 minutes

:22:34. > :22:37.to go, I wonder if he's going to come back out again. 12th fastest

:22:38. > :22:41.for Ricciardo, not quite the sort of pace that we were seeing in

:22:42. > :22:45.Melbourne. Might be a bit more of a vugle here for them. Yefr, be

:22:46. > :22:49.interesting to see what happens, because he was sensational as we

:22:50. > :22:55.said earlier, in Melbourne all the way through. And this is probably,

:22:56. > :22:58.you know, a better barometer in terms of performance levels. So be

:22:59. > :23:02.interesting to see what happens. I would expect him to go forward from

:23:03. > :23:06.where they are now. Ricciardo on circuit. We'll keep an eye on him

:23:07. > :23:12.and see if he manages to improve on his current times. He's 12th fastest

:23:13. > :23:24.as I mentioned. Quick note that sue till down -- Sutil town in 13th

:23:25. > :23:28.place. Bianchi still ahead in the ma rush Kobayashi with problems on his

:23:29. > :23:32.car, and Perez also unable to come back out. Maldonado and Grosjean

:23:33. > :23:35.both also with troubles with their cars. Hope they can get them back

:23:36. > :23:39.out for later on for the second practice session. I do hope that

:23:40. > :23:43.many of you will be able to join us, but I'm sure many of you will also

:23:44. > :23:48.have to get some sleep. Ricciardo just done a 145. 231 on that lap. A

:23:49. > :23:55.little slower than his previous best. Few of your final comments

:23:56. > :23:58.that have come in using the hashtag BBC F1. How much sleep, says evan,

:23:59. > :24:03.do the drives get before the race on Saturday night? He says I'm watching

:24:04. > :24:08.on my laptop in bed at the moment. So sleep is very much in the mind.

:24:09. > :24:12.Alex, in terms of preparing for the race, do drivers - it's difficult

:24:13. > :24:15.when you're moving time zones all the time. How do you adapt and do

:24:16. > :24:20.you expect to get a really good full-night sleep before a race? Yes,

:24:21. > :24:24.I think you make sure that that happens, but almost, it's imperative

:24:25. > :24:27.that you don't oversleep, you don't want to wake up in the morning

:24:28. > :24:31.feeling tired. I think most guys around seven to nine hours and

:24:32. > :24:35.anything more than that is a bit too much. You want to get a full night

:24:36. > :24:40.sleep, but don't want to be sleeping for 1 hours, come the right time

:24:41. > :24:45.you'll be a bit groggy still. Alonso back in the pit. Amy says: Boyfriend

:24:46. > :24:50.and I are in bed watching in the UK. She says I miss the old engine

:24:51. > :24:54.sound. Boyfriend loves the new sound. Got a split with one

:24:55. > :24:57.relationship. I went into my local butchers the other day, and I said

:24:58. > :25:02.what do you think. Exactly the Dame - one of them likes it, one of them

:25:03. > :25:07.dislikes it. It's a matter of personal preference. Some people,

:25:08. > :25:10.the noises is the be-all and end-all, other people doesn't

:25:11. > :25:14.matter. I don't think it matters that much. It's the racing that

:25:15. > :25:20.counts, as I said earlier. I agree. If they're overtaking each other and

:25:21. > :25:28.getting some dramatic racing, that's what counts. Raikkonen about to

:25:29. > :25:32.whisle his way out. Watch him out of the pits. No, we don't get to watch

:25:33. > :25:39.the actual practice start. We look at a replay of him on the track a

:25:40. > :25:41.moment ago. And this is one of the superslow-mo cameras here in

:25:42. > :25:45.Malaysia. Get some interesting shots as we get through the second part of

:25:46. > :25:51.practice today. Thomas finally making the comment that he's

:25:52. > :25:56.watching "on my Sofia in Dorset 30 miles from Jenson's home town."

:25:57. > :26:00.Thank you for that Thomas. On the subject of Jenson, we ought to

:26:01. > :26:05.stress we're talking about Kevin Magnussen's debut, and it was, but I

:26:06. > :26:08.think Jenson, his race in Melbourne was affected by that - the key two

:26:09. > :26:13.lap that he didn't get because of the yellow plag and all the way

:26:14. > :26:24.through. That dictated what happened in the race for him. So the jury is

:26:25. > :26:30.out as to whether we should expect Kevin to be here or not. He was a

:26:31. > :26:34.little bit lucky where he was with the safety car was announced, but he

:26:35. > :26:38.had the awareness and so did the team to get him in. I think they

:26:39. > :26:43.made three places by that clever call. The fact that Kevin, Jenson

:26:44. > :26:47.came from so far back and finished effectively one spot behind Kevin

:26:48. > :26:51.was a really good effort. I think here it will be very close. Well, we

:26:52. > :26:56.know that Magnussen has that little problem earlier, but right now, he's

:26:57. > :27:02.still in the pits. But as we heard from Jonathan Neil, it's not a major

:27:03. > :27:08.trouble. Perez, they're still maybe hoping they can get his car back out

:27:09. > :27:11.on circuit despite the problems from earlier. Getting the body work,

:27:12. > :27:14.should be going on to the car fairly soon. We'll see if Perez does make

:27:15. > :27:17.it out just at the end of the session. Just under eight minutes to

:27:18. > :27:22.go in the first practice session from Malaysia and currently being

:27:23. > :27:26.topped by Lewis Hamilton, who put it on poll position in Melbourne, but

:27:27. > :27:29.then of course suffered an engine problem. Interestingly that engine

:27:30. > :27:34.is the one they're using here today. It was such a minor problem, but

:27:35. > :27:37.when they fixed it, they felt it was - it should be happy to run, so they

:27:38. > :27:41.decided to run it today. Didn't want to go to another engine with its

:27:42. > :27:45.limitation on the number of power units you get through the year, you

:27:46. > :27:48.don't want to waist any mileage if you can avoid it, and Hamilton

:27:49. > :27:52.certainly doesn't seem to be suffering any on-going problems with

:27:53. > :27:55.that power unit because he is fastest. Raikkonen is second for

:27:56. > :27:59.Ferrari, that's a bit of a boost for the team. And if you look tat the

:28:00. > :28:03.actual performance levels over the Melbourne race weekend, and look at

:28:04. > :28:06.the fasest laps during the weekend, interestingly, Ferrari emerged as

:28:07. > :28:09.the second best team, if you just look across the whole weekend in

:28:10. > :28:14.terms of fastest laps, well, they didn't seem to be able to do in the

:28:15. > :28:17.race, Ferrari, was consistently lap at a fast pace. But there was no

:28:18. > :28:21.denying that they had some pace there, Tony. So there is some

:28:22. > :28:25.promise at Ferrari. I think they didn't find overtaking easy, did

:28:26. > :28:31.they? I think the VRS problems on one of the cars. So it's - it's

:28:32. > :28:35.early days and I think it's - if they're lacking straight-line speed

:28:36. > :28:40.and overtaking, they're going to be find out here. Yes, true, but I

:28:41. > :28:43.think if - if anybody can get a good performance out of those cars, it's

:28:44. > :28:47.both their drivers here this weekend, Raikkonen and Alonso with,

:28:48. > :28:51.as I say, tremendous records here. Both have delivered superb results.

:28:52. > :28:55.That's a bit more encouraging. Lotus back out and back in again with no

:28:56. > :28:59.problems. Romain Grosjean, so the car that stopped out on track

:29:00. > :29:04.earlier on has been able to go out there. There we are at Force India.

:29:05. > :29:10.Have they put the body work on yet? Some bits are on yet. So clearly

:29:11. > :29:15.they're trying to get it ready and you can see Perez in the background

:29:16. > :29:18.beginning to put his overalls on, so there is maybe a chance that he's

:29:19. > :29:20.going to get a lap in before the end of this session. So fingers crossed

:29:21. > :29:26.for the Force India boys they can get him back out. There is the other

:29:27. > :29:31.car of Nico Hulkenberg, and once again an impressive performance from

:29:32. > :29:36.Hulkenberg last time out. Finished in sixth place. You mentioned Alonso

:29:37. > :29:41.struggled to overtake, so Hulkenberg proving he's never a pushover, is

:29:42. > :29:45.he? No, he's one of these new generation drivers, a future star,

:29:46. > :29:48.just waiting the opportunity to be able to prove it. Well, let's see

:29:49. > :29:54.what heck do here this weekend. Pretty good record of scoring points

:29:55. > :29:57.on this Malaysia circuit, in fact, qualified fifth here when he drove

:29:58. > :30:01.for Williams back in 2010. Best finish was actually last year when

:30:02. > :30:05.he was was wa Sauber and finished in #th position but was ninth for Force

:30:06. > :30:11.India in 2012 as well. Let's get some more news on -- news in the pit

:30:12. > :30:15.lane. Interesting, because Daniel Ricciardo and the Red Bull just came

:30:16. > :30:19.in, he stopped - simulated the time of what a pit stop should be

:30:20. > :30:22.normally be, and then went back out and so, therefore, they must be

:30:23. > :30:25.quite ahead of their programme because they're thinking about right

:30:26. > :30:29.now about the race scenario, what is the temperature going to do when you

:30:30. > :30:33.sit from for the five seconds before they start off. So, I have to say

:30:34. > :30:35.that Red Bull must be in a reasonable position with the

:30:36. > :30:40.reliability right now. That's encouraging. As we said, Vettel is

:30:41. > :30:45.currently 7th and Ricciardo 12th now in this session. So not showing a

:30:46. > :30:48.great turn of speed, but often on a Friday morning, we don't see the

:30:49. > :30:52.relative performance of the teams that clearly. Mind you, we are

:30:53. > :30:55.seeing that Hamilton is fastest and there's no great surprise there.

:30:56. > :31:02.We're expecting Mercedes once again to kind of be the pace setters. Yes,

:31:03. > :31:08.interestingly, if Nico was to win here, he'd equal the number of wins

:31:09. > :31:12.by his father. Five races. He says these things don't matter with him,

:31:13. > :31:17.but I'm sure he'll be happy to have another one. There's a few records

:31:18. > :31:20.to be matched or broken. Button heading around the final corner.

:31:21. > :31:26.Lewis Hamilton has the chance of matching the all British record for

:31:27. > :31:30.poll positions. That's been held by Jim Clark for a long time. 33. Yes,

:31:31. > :31:37.since 1968 and could be matched this weekend. I did ask Lewis yesterday

:31:38. > :31:41.whether matching man sell's -- Mansell's record mattered to him. He

:31:42. > :31:45.said, the numbers don't really mean that much, what matters is getting

:31:46. > :31:48.out there and having some success. I think that British record of Jim

:31:49. > :31:54.Clark's, which has stood for a long time, going to be a meaningful thing

:31:55. > :31:58.if he matches it and then goes on to break it. He had such few starts in

:31:59. > :32:01.those days. Jim Clark's record was extraordinary. Yes. Usually about 10

:32:02. > :32:05.races a season at that time. Yes. And now we have got virtually 20

:32:06. > :32:09.reasons -- races a season. Yes. The opportunity of scoring a poll

:32:10. > :32:14.position much higher. This year we have a poll position trophy to think

:32:15. > :32:21.about as well. That's right. But that's something we got to think

:32:22. > :32:25.about as we go through the year. I would unite think Mercedes Mercedes

:32:26. > :32:28.driver would claim that. Yes. Not many odds on others. Alex, only a

:32:29. > :32:31.couple of minutes left on this session. Give us your thoughts on

:32:32. > :32:35.what we have been seeing here? Pretty much what you expected? What

:32:36. > :32:39.about performance of Ferrari, is that something to be encouraged by?

:32:40. > :32:43.I think, as you said in Australia, that there were actually quite

:32:44. > :32:47.stronk and you would expect Ferrari to be, you know - they made it very

:32:48. > :32:51.clear, they have a point to prove this year. I think they have more

:32:52. > :32:57.than enough capabilities to do that. And as you say, Kimi and Fernando

:32:58. > :33:02.are doing the best in that car. It's interesting to see Red Bull seem so

:33:03. > :33:09.relaxed. So I think that they probably have something. Vettel did

:33:10. > :33:14.only nine laps and he's only 9/10th off. So I think that they are still

:33:15. > :33:19.kind of someone to pay both attention to. And 17 laps for

:33:20. > :33:24.Ricciardo, so that's quite encouraging. Massa, a good speed

:33:25. > :33:32.trap figure, one of the fastest speed trap figures. And a squeal, if

:33:33. > :33:36.you were listening to that on radio, that was Kimi Raikkonen locking up

:33:37. > :33:41.the left front. That's the kind of noise we do get to hear right now.

:33:42. > :33:46.They hear it for the first time, the drivers. Yeah, it's good. Yeah.

:33:47. > :33:52.Raikkonen just completing another lap here. As the clock continues to

:33:53. > :33:58.Towards end of this first session. Raikkonen currently second fastest

:33:59. > :34:03.on that 1 minute 14. 843 just a 10th or so off the pace set by Lewis

:34:04. > :34:07.Hamilton earlier on. Going back to the speed... Lewis Hamilton through

:34:08. > :34:10.the travel trap. I think he's going to be OK. Yeah. But that's

:34:11. > :34:13.interesting. We haven't seen the build-up to that, but we certainly

:34:14. > :34:17.picked up Hamilton as he flew through the gravel trap. Fairly

:34:18. > :34:25.unusual place, the exit of turn 11 there where he went off. Yeah. Will

:34:26. > :34:31.be interesting to see. Power-related issue. We're going to get a view

:34:32. > :34:37.now. A bit of a lockup into turn 9, runs wide. Lost on entry here. OK.

:34:38. > :34:44.Through 10. Let's see what happens here. He's on the curve. Oh, dear.

:34:45. > :34:49.Wow! So I guess he shouldn't use that entry. Stay off the curve.

:34:50. > :34:52.Whether he was distracted and working out something else or

:34:53. > :34:56.talking to the team, I don't know, that was an unusual little slipup

:34:57. > :35:01.from Lewis Hamilton. What I was saying about speeds, when we looked

:35:02. > :35:05.out of the commentary box window in Melbourne, it was visibly quicker.

:35:06. > :35:10.Even if they're not as noisy, that's got to be significant. We're talking

:35:11. > :35:16.about 200 miles an hour. 320 or something like that. That's right.

:35:17. > :35:20.We're seeing speed trap figures of 315kph. So about 195, 196 miles an

:35:21. > :35:24.hour. So, yeah, the top speeds are a little bit higher, haul though

:35:25. > :35:28.they're cornering speeds are lower with the loss of downforce this

:35:29. > :35:32.year. So the chequered flag is out on this session. And a few cars just

:35:33. > :35:37.to finish off their laps. 11 cars currently on track, in fact. Quite a

:35:38. > :35:42.few cars out just at the end. I don't think that Perez did manage to

:35:43. > :35:45.get back out sadly in the Force India. We did see Romain Grosjean,

:35:46. > :35:48.of course, do a lap. So good for the Lotus boys to see him back on

:35:49. > :35:53.circuit. Nico Rosberg, he's currently just finishing off a lap

:35:54. > :35:57.as well. But we here not expecting to see any improvement. Looks like

:35:58. > :36:02.Lewis Hamilton will finish this first session with the fastest time

:36:03. > :36:07.ahead of the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen. Going marbles out there,

:36:08. > :36:11.very slippery. A bit wide. Interesting, Hamilton saying it's

:36:12. > :36:15.like driving on marbles out there, very slippery. We saw it run wide.

:36:16. > :36:19.So clearly track conditions are not that easy. Track temperature of some

:36:20. > :36:26.48 degrees at the moment by the way. So Hamilton, Raikkonen, Rosberg,

:36:27. > :36:30.then Button, and then Magnussen, Vettel 7th. Hulkenberg 8th, Massa

:36:31. > :36:37.and Bottas in the top 10. Both Williams in the top 10 ahead of

:36:38. > :36:42.Alonso. Ricciardo was 12th, and Kvyat, Gutierrez, Bianchi, and no

:36:43. > :36:46.time set for Perez, Maldonado, or for Grosjean. So that's how this

:36:47. > :36:49.first session has gone. Been a difficult start again for both

:36:50. > :36:53.Caterham and Lotus, but for Mercedes, it looks as though they're

:36:54. > :37:00.going to be fighting fit as we saw in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago.

:37:01. > :37:07.Thanks to Alex Rossi and Tony. Let's get back down stairs now to Lee. An

:37:08. > :37:10.interesting session. Good if you're Hamilton. They were hoping that all

:37:11. > :37:15.the work they did in the last couple of weeks in the mechanic s looks

:37:16. > :37:21.like they needed a boost, but they did very few laps the. Romain

:37:22. > :37:26.Grosjean did get back out there. And Raikkonen, he was a surprise popping

:37:27. > :37:32.up in second. Not too sure. If Ferrari thought was going to be a

:37:33. > :37:36.little bit quicker around here, but maybe Alonso, more than Kimi, but

:37:37. > :37:41.this circuit is little bit difficult in terms of its characteristics,

:37:42. > :37:45.whether it's a contender in terms of the overall is one thing, but it

:37:46. > :37:50.will be more competitive. We can see there how they finished up. A good

:37:51. > :37:54.day if you have am Mercedes Benz in the back of your car, but that's

:37:55. > :38:05.certainly not a surprise. No. They have the upper hand, but you have to

:38:06. > :38:08.say tore row Rosso, is not far away. Therefore, I think they'll be a

:38:09. > :38:12.little bit faster again. We can see the Lotus guys right at the bottom.

:38:13. > :38:16.They're going to have a long night and not a good day either if you're

:38:17. > :38:19.Sergio Perez. Kamui Kobayashi didn't get that many laps either. That's

:38:20. > :38:22.the problem with these guys this is a real opportunity nor them at the

:38:23. > :38:25.beginning of the season when other teams have reliability problem ps,

:38:26. > :38:37.try to maybe get that one point that could be critical at the end of the

:38:38. > :38:43.season between Marushia. But it's just all switched when we got to

:38:44. > :38:47.Melbourne. OK, this is the time where the teams really, really have

:38:48. > :38:50.to get the work right to give them the edge for the rest of the

:38:51. > :38:53.weekend. Thank you very much fur your company so far. You have done

:38:54. > :39:02.the hard work. You might as well stay up for free practice so. We'd

:39:03. > :39:05.love to see you in 2 hours 20 minutes. Bye, bye.
