:01:04. > :01:17.When the chequered flag falls, who will grace this podium? What can we

:01:18. > :01:22.conclude? Expect the unexpected. It is all here. The new era has begun.

:01:23. > :01:25.The reigning world champion and the favourite for this year's title were

:01:26. > :01:31.both out of the race. We need to retire to save the engine. It is not

:01:32. > :01:37.running. The biggest shake-up means the word reliability is definitely

:01:38. > :01:47.back in the dictionary. Max Chilton has been left behind. The win for

:01:48. > :01:50.Rosberg. But the old guard were kept honest by the new blood. Kevin

:01:51. > :01:56.Magnussen heading the rookies with an impressive podium on his first

:01:57. > :02:02.race. The first-ever Danish driver to finish on the podium in Formula

:02:03. > :02:08.One. Valtteri Bottas kissed his chances goodbye. But he still

:02:09. > :02:16.managed fifth place. Daniil Kvyat debuted. In ninth place. Daniel

:02:17. > :02:24.Ricciardo's spot was disqualified. Fuel flow was the issue. We will

:02:25. > :02:34.appeal. Court action after one race. And now to Malaysia, heat can do

:02:35. > :02:43.strange things. Remember last year? He has gone past! Mark Webber is on

:02:44. > :02:47.the outside! They have touched. Then the impromptu visit from Lewis

:02:48. > :02:51.Hamilton to McLaren. He has gone into the wrong pit! You can throw a

:02:52. > :03:15.monsoon into the mix. It is up in the air, anything could

:03:16. > :03:18.happen. Thank you for joining us in Malaysia for qualifying and as you

:03:19. > :03:24.would expect, it is sweltering. With the threat of rain and I felt one

:03:25. > :03:28.raindrop as I said that. Nice work. We are interested in your views so

:03:29. > :03:37.you can tweet us and send messages and questions. You are part of us

:03:38. > :04:05.and right with us in Malaysia. Welcome.

:04:06. > :04:17.Can you believe that? A few drops of rain fell down when I was talking

:04:18. > :04:22.about it. It is so gentle. Normally it is a downpour. David is joining

:04:23. > :04:32.us for qualifying. 31 degrees, boiling hot. How did you cope when

:04:33. > :04:36.driving in this heat? The only way to train is to put in the stress

:04:37. > :04:41.levels you will experience and humidity is the real difficulty. You

:04:42. > :04:44.have the ability to sweat and get that heat out but with that

:04:45. > :04:50.humidity, you get water on your face. You simply have to train

:04:51. > :04:59.outdoors. Mark Webber was talking about that. That is later on in the

:05:00. > :05:02.programme. Malaysia has been in the headlines recently with the tragic

:05:03. > :05:06.events of the flight. This weekend, Formula One is paying tribute. A

:05:07. > :05:09.number of teams are carrying messages on their cars and all of

:05:10. > :05:16.the drivers will carry messages on their helmets. Showing support for

:05:17. > :05:21.the families of those aboard that airline. There will be one minute's

:05:22. > :05:25.silence tomorrow and Mercedes, they carry MH370 on a part of the car and

:05:26. > :05:38.a tribute to Michael Schumacher, who had that skiing accident. Keep

:05:39. > :05:41.fighting, Michael, they have got. Several months have passed since

:05:42. > :05:46.those circumstances and it is tragic for his family and we are all

:05:47. > :05:52.waiting for news. We do not know anything different and when we get

:05:53. > :05:55.any news, we will let you know. Malaysia is round number two on the

:05:56. > :05:59.calendar so early doors and we're off to Bahrain next weekend, then

:06:00. > :06:06.celebrating the 50th British Grand Prix at Silverstone and with plenty

:06:07. > :06:09.of events going on. Brazil is the penultimate event and we wrap things

:06:10. > :06:24.up in Abu Dhabi with that double points rule taking effect. Early

:06:25. > :06:31.stages. It is a new era for Formula One as the rain falls. How does that

:06:32. > :06:37.work with the teams in terms of getting the grip? -- getting into

:06:38. > :06:41.the groove? When will they feel comfortable? 12 days of pre-season

:06:42. > :06:45.testing, four days of running, including Melbourne, so this is

:06:46. > :06:48.infancy. Like a child, the first few days of their life, they don't do

:06:49. > :06:57.much, it takes a couple of years before they start doing anything

:06:58. > :07:01.interesting! I will grab my brolly. These cars are very much at the

:07:02. > :07:04.beginning of their development and out of the blocks, Mercedes have

:07:05. > :07:08.done a fantastic job but we saw just how much Red Bull have improved from

:07:09. > :07:13.pre-season and Ferrari have taken a step forward. It'll be next year

:07:14. > :07:22.before we start to see any levelling out. With the big changes taking

:07:23. > :07:25.place, have teams done pretty well to be in this situation?

:07:26. > :07:29.Exceptionally well, from not being able to complete to more than half

:07:30. > :07:36.of the field finishing in Melbourne and that is what those steps are

:07:37. > :07:39.about. They are prototypes, they own the international property and the

:07:40. > :07:49.design and they have solve those problems. -- half to solve. It was

:07:50. > :07:53.not tentative to start the season. Two world champions sidelined, one

:07:54. > :08:03.rookie on the podium and a pending court case.

:08:04. > :08:16.A new era is about to power its way into the history books. Light side!

:08:17. > :08:26.-- lights out. Rosberg cutting through! Who else? One of the

:08:27. > :08:32.Williams. Contact down the field. Sebastian Vettel, damage to the car.

:08:33. > :08:40.Does Hamilton have a problem? He is very slow in a straight line. TEAM

:08:41. > :08:49.RADIO: We need to retire. It is not running. Sebastian Vettel in big

:08:50. > :08:57.trouble. He appears to be continuing with that trouble. Kimi Raikkonen.

:08:58. > :09:05.Down the inside. He is just through. He has hit the wall! My goodness! He

:09:06. > :09:15.has broken his wheel. His suspension is damaged also. Oh, no! Maybe it is

:09:16. > :09:26.just the rim. They have sent him on his way. TEAM RADIO: We need to keep

:09:27. > :09:34.on the pace. We will try later. That was a big slide. That will give

:09:35. > :09:39.Bottas a chance. Rosberg through the last turn. Outstanding performance.

:09:40. > :09:45.Nico Rosberg wins the Australian Grand Prix for Mercedes. Daniel

:09:46. > :10:02.Ricciardo, taking his first-ever podium finish. Kevin Magnussen,

:10:03. > :10:05.third on his debut. Unbelievable! Five hours after that race finish,

:10:06. > :10:11.we were waiting in the paddock to find out what was going on. Daniel

:10:12. > :10:21.Ricciardo was disqualified and it was a bit of a shock. That was for

:10:22. > :10:30.contravening the fuel flow? The FIA notified Red Bull were exceeding the

:10:31. > :10:36.limit, 35 litres per hour. -- 135 macro 's. -- bleachers. They had to

:10:37. > :10:40.go to the regulative body for the sensor and they had to set the

:10:41. > :10:44.offset and Red Bull felt that would be less performance and they said

:10:45. > :10:47.the sensor was not reliable so they were going to continue because they

:10:48. > :10:50.felt they had not actually gone over the limit. The stewards disqualified

:10:51. > :10:54.them because they said in the regulations you have to use this,

:10:55. > :11:03.you cannot use your own method of defining the limit but you must use

:11:04. > :11:08.this particular sensor. I am getting soaked! This sits inside the fuel

:11:09. > :11:13.tank, and basically it is only a measurement tool, it does not

:11:14. > :11:22.restrict the fuel. Only measurement. The FIA understand exactly. Red Bull

:11:23. > :11:30.appealing. What does this mean for the sport? It seems like a grey

:11:31. > :11:33.area? What we have is Formula One has moved into a new era with

:11:34. > :11:36.real-time scrutiny. Cars have to comply with regulations and practice

:11:37. > :11:43.sessions, it's under scrutiny before and after. With these new

:11:44. > :11:46.regulations, it has been challenged in the Court of Appeal, and unless

:11:47. > :12:01.there is something really irregular with that meter, it is unlikely they

:12:02. > :12:04.will change their position. It appears that the defence from Red

:12:05. > :12:14.Bull is that it's 100 kilograms for the entire race rather than being

:12:15. > :12:17.every hour. It might be confusing but the most important regulation is

:12:18. > :12:20.moving into this brave new world of recoverable energy and efficiency,

:12:21. > :12:30.all of the teams can only use 100 kilos of fuel from start to finish.

:12:31. > :12:35.It is clear that Red Bull have not gone beyond that. It is about how

:12:36. > :12:45.much is passing through this meter at various points. This sensor. Why

:12:46. > :12:51.not just one limit of 100 kilos? This is about qualifying. If you

:12:52. > :12:54.allow teams to have as much fuel flow as they can get inside, they

:12:55. > :12:57.will develop special units and although there will be some limits,

:12:58. > :13:04.that will mean a bunch of other costs. If you have a fuel flow limit

:13:05. > :13:10.and the maximum limit, you cover those bases. Last year the engines

:13:11. > :13:14.were putting through 170 every hour and this year it is 100 and it also

:13:15. > :13:18.pushes manufacturers not necessarily to create more power but they can

:13:19. > :13:26.produce as much power as they can with this, but it pushes them

:13:27. > :13:33.towards more efficient power. The hearing is on the 14th of April.

:13:34. > :13:42.This is the current state of Formula One in terms of the standings. Nico

:13:43. > :13:50.Rosberg is top dog with 25. Kevin Magnussen in second place and Jenson

:13:51. > :13:56.Button in third spot. All Mercedes. The top three. Daniil Kvyat in ninth

:13:57. > :14:05.place. And Sergio Perez in 10th place. The Constructors'

:14:06. > :14:17.Championship: These are pending those results from the court

:14:18. > :14:26.hearing. McLaren in top spot. Force India in fifth place. We are

:14:27. > :14:31.seriously in a monsoon and this is exactly what I was talking about at

:14:32. > :14:37.the start. For those saying, where is Eddie? He will be with us in

:14:38. > :14:43.Barcelona but until then, some peace and quiet in terms of shirts! The

:14:44. > :14:49.noise has been a very big subject. Exaggerated by Bernie Ecclestone.

:14:50. > :14:56.What are your feelings on the noise of the new cars? Very different?

:14:57. > :15:00.Whether we like it or not, we must work with it and I am sitting closer

:15:01. > :15:16.to the fence of preferring louder noise, powerful engines. These

:15:17. > :15:24.engines are incredibly powerful. It is a step towards the future. We

:15:25. > :15:33.will need loud music to warn someone is coming rather than the noise of

:15:34. > :15:40.the engine. They needed to change the rules and move forward. Formula

:15:41. > :15:47.One and motorsport has been a live test bed for future technology.

:15:48. > :15:51.Personally, I found out the actual engines are louder and have more of

:15:52. > :15:56.a chewed life than what we have heard. Some of the comments are

:15:57. > :16:04.because people have not heard them up close and personal. Going back to

:16:05. > :16:11.Melbourne, if you like overtaking, Valterri Bottas must have been your

:16:12. > :16:16.man of the match. You and Williams were one of the standout performers

:16:17. > :16:22.in Melbourne. You double the points Williams gained in the whole of

:16:23. > :16:30.2013, just in one race. You must reassess your expectations. It was

:16:31. > :16:34.really nice to see we are double points already. The goals are set to

:16:35. > :16:41.be higher. We need to take the challenge and aim even higher. What

:16:42. > :16:47.are the new goals? If we can consistently be fighting for good

:16:48. > :16:54.points instead of only top ten. Let's have a look at Melbourne. You

:16:55. > :17:00.are 15th on the grid because you had a five grid penalty. Usually you

:17:01. > :17:04.would have started tenth. You had an excellent start. I saw there was a

:17:05. > :17:11.small gap on the left and went for that. I was flat out. I saw there

:17:12. > :17:19.was the green missile coming. I saw there was no way he was going to go

:17:20. > :17:26.through. I had to wait while turning the corner. By the end of the first

:17:27. > :17:32.lap you are already into tenth place. This is turn ten and 11 where

:17:33. > :17:39.you had the incident. This is the lap before. You can just see the car

:17:40. > :17:50.kicking out. There were small bumps. It is a proper corner. I was

:17:51. > :18:03.just pushing too hard. I was not sure but did you think your race

:18:04. > :18:08.would be over? In the pit stop, the suspension was OK. I made the race

:18:09. > :18:17.more difficult. You came back through the field. You had to. Is it

:18:18. > :18:22.easier to overtake? I would not say it is more difficult. It is not much

:18:23. > :18:32.easier. In terms of top speed and straight-line speed, we seem to be

:18:33. > :18:40.quite competitive. This is you overtaking Kimi Raikkonen. How did

:18:41. > :18:45.you feel? It was really fair. Looked at it! You are not giving him an

:18:46. > :18:56.inch. You are on the kerb. You are squeezing in but you are really

:18:57. > :19:03.going for it. If I had left more room, he would have had a chance to

:19:04. > :19:06.have a better exit. This time it worked. What it showed me through

:19:07. > :19:12.the whole of this race was you have a confidence with the car. The car

:19:13. > :19:16.definitely is performing very well. Will that be able to translate into

:19:17. > :19:30.a result in Malaysian? We really hope so. -- Malaysia. We are there

:19:31. > :19:35.to get on the podium. It will be a nice next step in my career. Looking

:19:36. > :19:41.at your confidence and your smile and the performance for the Williams

:19:42. > :19:46.team, you will be spraying champagne before very long. Let's hope so. A

:19:47. > :19:51.lovely interview with Valterri Bottas. We are the only broadcasters

:19:52. > :19:55.who are stupid enough to come out in the rain. Everyone else is

:19:56. > :20:00.sheltering. The monsoon is full on. In ten minutes' time, this could all

:20:01. > :20:07.change. Claire Williams is with us now. To do expect the shower? We

:20:08. > :20:16.were hoping for it. -- did you expect? Let's hope it clears in time

:20:17. > :20:25.for qualifying. We saw a great performance by Valterri boater. --

:20:26. > :20:31.Valterri Bottas. Sky we would just love to get both cars into the top

:20:32. > :20:35.ten. It'll be really tricky for everyone. It will be a case of

:20:36. > :20:39.managing strategies, I think. We will see what happens in the race

:20:40. > :20:44.tomorrow. To get both cars home with the points is where we want to end

:20:45. > :20:53.up. H and is amount of changes through last year. -- a tremendous

:20:54. > :20:58.amount. Will we see more coming through? Formula One is a

:20:59. > :21:02.development war at the end of the day. All the people we have brought

:21:03. > :21:07.in, to support the talent we have, we have some great people who work

:21:08. > :21:12.at Williams already. Bringing in the new people to augment the talent we

:21:13. > :21:19.already have at base. They are making an impact. They are headed by

:21:20. > :21:24.Pat Symonds. The whole team seems more positive this year. There

:21:25. > :21:29.always is a good atmosphere. When you are not doing well, morale is

:21:30. > :21:33.questionable will stop this year there has been an upsurge in

:21:34. > :21:42.motivation and passion to go racing again. That is what we are about.

:21:43. > :21:48.Valterri Bottas was quite effervescent. He was big in the end.

:21:49. > :21:59.Billy Pei Massa has a new lease of life about him. -- Felipe Massa.

:22:00. > :22:03.They give a huge amount of abuse to everyone who is working

:22:04. > :22:07.behind-the-scenes. These guys in Malaysia, it is such hard work. To

:22:08. > :22:13.have two drivers you want to fight for makes a big difference. Can I

:22:14. > :22:18.ask you about the switch to Mercedes? It was inspired but

:22:19. > :22:23.presumably it was heavily we searched? It was. We did due

:22:24. > :22:29.diligence behind-the-scenes. There was a lot of work. There were

:22:30. > :22:34.conversations with Renault and the guys at Mercedes. Doing the work we

:22:35. > :22:39.did, we felt Mercedes may have been in a better position and it has paid

:22:40. > :22:47.off. The other manufacturers will all catch up. Not too soon, we hope.

:22:48. > :22:54.All the best. Another rising star. Just before we went on air, David

:22:55. > :23:02.was talking to Daniil Kvyat. You had an amazing start in Melbourne. How

:23:03. > :23:08.are you feeling? It is hard to reflect. My mind is completely in a

:23:09. > :23:14.different world. We are thinking about this race here. Hopefully we

:23:15. > :23:19.can do something even better. You did not have any preconceived ideas

:23:20. > :23:24.about Formula One. In terms of taking the step up to Formula One in

:23:25. > :23:33.Melbourne, how big a shock was that, going into the longer races? It was

:23:34. > :23:37.quite tricky with very limited testing. I think we managed really

:23:38. > :23:43.well. It was important to get a good rhythm on the Melbourne circuit,

:23:44. > :23:50.which was quite tricky. We managed well and visibility was very good.

:23:51. > :23:54.We managed well in qualifying. In the race, we had to finish and

:23:55. > :24:00.finish quite fast. We managed to points, so it was quite good. Any

:24:01. > :24:12.news on the weather and what is your realistic assessment? It looks quite

:24:13. > :24:16.cloudy, doesn't it? You always have to take the opportunity to gain

:24:17. > :24:24.positions. If it rains, we are ready. We will try our best. Where

:24:25. > :24:34.do you think you are? Who are your main competitors? Williams was not

:24:35. > :24:46.the car ahead but it is hard to say at the moment. We will get

:24:47. > :24:51.everything right I hope for Q3. In terms of the weather, I am not sure

:24:52. > :24:55.what you will see. It is still raining quite heavily. When it does

:24:56. > :25:02.stop, it will drive pretty quickly. Lots of news around this week. Here

:25:03. > :25:09.is Tom with the round-up. Melbourne was an emotional roller-coaster for

:25:10. > :25:14.the Daniel Ricciardo. He was disqualified for a fuel flow

:25:15. > :25:20.anomaly. A subsequent week-long training camp in Perth had not

:25:21. > :25:28.mellowed his mood when he arrived in Sepang. I was like, limey, crikey!

:25:29. > :25:34.It was a bit of a downer will stop at the same time, I was happy I put

:25:35. > :25:40.in a good weekend. I put in a good race. The front row start was all

:25:41. > :25:47.right. It was not the best of the line. I recovered that. In any case,

:25:48. > :25:53.I was still pleased with the result. On the back of the disqualification,

:25:54. > :25:57.the Red Bull owner has been throwing his weight around, claiming he will

:25:58. > :26:03.quit Formula One if the sport no longer meets the needs of his

:26:04. > :26:09.company and it is a serious threat. He is a passionate fan of Formula

:26:10. > :26:14.One. He has two teams. He has a base that is going back to Austria this

:26:15. > :26:18.year. He is probably the biggest fan of Formula One in the world. He

:26:19. > :26:25.wants to make sure the racing is what it should be in Formula One and

:26:26. > :26:30.the product is appealing to fans. Every cloud has a silver lining. In

:26:31. > :26:39.Melbourne, that was the silver McLaren of Jenson Button. He had the

:26:40. > :26:42.50th podium of his Formula One career. McLaren have brought dynamic

:26:43. > :26:48.upgrades to this race and confidence is high. Anything is good right

:26:49. > :26:56.now. It is only two weeks after the first race. You have driven a lot of

:26:57. > :27:03.Formula One cars. To think it is a car you can work with and go on to

:27:04. > :27:08.win races with? Definitely. Several teams go to struggle with their new

:27:09. > :27:12.cars, none more than Lotus. The team has been troubled. They claim they

:27:13. > :27:17.will not get it sorted until the Spanish Grand Prix in May. Despite

:27:18. > :27:26.the troubles, Romain Grosjean remains confident in his own

:27:27. > :27:36.abilities. Brickyard Aero -- Daniel Ricciardo had a great race. I hope

:27:37. > :27:40.to get back on the podium. Mercedes though entered the business end of

:27:41. > :27:45.the weekend as favourites. They topped the times in practice. Nico

:27:46. > :27:50.Rosberg is taking nothing for granted. We do not know how it will

:27:51. > :27:56.be yet. It is completely different. Tyres, temperatures, humidity. You

:27:57. > :28:04.absolutely drenched and you are just standing here with the microphone.

:28:05. > :28:08.Imagine as cars and drivers. Nico Rosberg giving Tom some stick. From

:28:09. > :28:18.big unity and the sunshine to the rain. Just about half an hour to go

:28:19. > :28:23.until the session starts. It is not raining heavy enough to delay. I do

:28:24. > :28:30.not think so. We had a huge downpour yesterday afternoon. The session

:28:31. > :28:34.that was running was red flagged. It took about 12 minutes to clear up.

:28:35. > :28:40.Now we have got through the worst of the initial downpour, I would expect

:28:41. > :28:51.them to go out in full wets. These cars are so low to the ground, it is

:28:52. > :28:58.like skimming stones. Nico Rosberg was bang on. He said it was such a

:28:59. > :29:02.different track from Australia. Everything will be differently. It

:29:03. > :29:10.is quite a start to the Grand Prix season. You can go all the way to

:29:11. > :29:15.Australia on the streets of an empty track and go to the heat and

:29:16. > :29:20.humidity of Malaysia and work your way back to Europe. You'd think it

:29:21. > :29:24.would make more sense to start closer to base. The amount of boxes

:29:25. > :29:32.of spare parts that have been arising for all the teams have been

:29:33. > :29:38.incredible. Can I ask you about the comments?

:29:39. > :29:56.He is more than a passionate fan of Formula One. It is a means to an end

:29:57. > :30:00.to leverage the brand. He needs to feel it is a pure sport and everyone

:30:01. > :30:05.is running under fair and equal regulations. He is entitled to give

:30:06. > :30:12.an opinion, perhaps more entitled than anyone else. Carrying through

:30:13. > :30:16.with that thought, who needs each other more? Do Red Bull need Formula

:30:17. > :30:22.One or does Formula One need Red Bull? Red Bull were successful

:30:23. > :30:33.before Formula One and Formula One have been successful without Red

:30:34. > :30:37.Bull. It has made lots of people very successful on very many levels.

:30:38. > :30:42.It is not a marriage of convenience, it is very much a case of, it suits

:30:43. > :30:45.the business model of what Red Bull is trying to do. He felt the need to

:30:46. > :30:51.say something after the disappointment of Melbourne. Talking

:30:52. > :30:55.of people who win at Formula One, we are just passing Lotus. They won in

:30:56. > :31:00.Australia, the first race, last time. Here they are in all sorts of

:31:01. > :31:09.tangles. It is extraordinary. They have always worked on a small budget

:31:10. > :31:12.but is it a step too far? It has been a very difficult start to the

:31:13. > :31:16.season and to be in financial difficulty and have a situation with

:31:17. > :31:24.so many changes, so many costs, that is remarkable. The last thing you

:31:25. > :31:29.need is to have reliability issues and all those other things. Coming

:31:30. > :31:32.back to what we said, what is remarkable about this sport is the

:31:33. > :31:44.ability for people to find technical solutions and work all night. Go

:31:45. > :31:50.back to the hotel, take a shower and then go back. This is a sport with

:31:51. > :31:54.real commitment across the board. You can see behind us the rain is

:31:55. > :31:58.just letting up. It has started to fall down again. Look at the amount

:31:59. > :32:02.of water falling down, that will sit on the track until it stops raining

:32:03. > :32:09.and then it can clear quite quickly but this is dodgy territory. This

:32:10. > :32:13.heavy rain then has a problem with the tyres, they can remove water

:32:14. > :32:16.from the surface and it is that skateboarding effect, the underbody

:32:17. > :32:29.of the car, it will make it very difficult. Some time before it

:32:30. > :32:36.starts. It really becomes a lottery on the straights, never mind the

:32:37. > :32:40.corners. Pretty scary stuff. Lee McKenzie has been catching up with

:32:41. > :32:42.Kevin Magnussen. He got his first podium in his first-ever Formula One

:32:43. > :32:53.race in Australia. Not bad? Kevin Magnussen, the first Danish

:32:54. > :32:58.driver ever to finish on a podium in Formula One. When we spoke after

:32:59. > :33:06.Australia you said it was like a dream. Have you had time to wake up?

:33:07. > :33:10.Yes, it has sunk in a little bit more. It felt amazing to get onto

:33:11. > :33:23.the podium and to do that on my first race. But it was not a win. He

:33:24. > :33:31.just turns to the left. It was scary from where I was watching. Yes, it

:33:32. > :33:39.was a bit of a scary start. The car rotated. After the first lap, it was

:33:40. > :33:50.pretty easy. Not easy, but straightforward. He has gone past

:33:51. > :33:53.Lewis Hamilton. The safety car was there. I had pit stops to worry

:33:54. > :33:59.about but otherwise, pretty straightforward. Did it feel like a

:34:00. > :34:08.different grid, your first Formula One? No. I was quite comfortable. I

:34:09. > :34:14.think just being with this team and being prepared helped. You have been

:34:15. > :34:22.part of McLaren for quite a while and I remember seeing them coming to

:34:23. > :34:30.the races with you. It must not be like stepping into a new team? No, I

:34:31. > :34:38.feel very at home. It felt like my team before. Before this season.

:34:39. > :34:44.Kevin Magnussen, in his grand prix debut. You have had the podium but

:34:45. > :34:50.you will always talk about winning and wanting to win and that is very

:34:51. > :34:54.much on your radar? Yes, I am here to be the best. I'm not saying that

:34:55. > :35:06.in an arrogant way, don't get me wrong, I understand how big the

:35:07. > :35:19.challenge is. These guys are the best in the world. There are so many

:35:20. > :35:29.strategies. The cars are similar. You don't have that relevant. --

:35:30. > :35:33.development. So, coming into Formula One is a very big challenge. My goal

:35:34. > :35:37.is to become world champion. And I know how big a challenge that is. If

:35:38. > :35:41.you believe you are the best and most talented and if you work as

:35:42. > :35:53.hard as you can, you will achieve what you want. Live shots in

:35:54. > :36:00.Malaysia, puddles in the pit lane. And the rain does not look like

:36:01. > :36:11.slowing down. That was a lovely chat with Kevin Magnussen. K-Mag. That is

:36:12. > :36:20.what the kids are calling him on the straight! -- on the straights. What

:36:21. > :36:23.a nice guy. New to the tournament but he seems to understand what it

:36:24. > :36:28.takes to become the world champion. He knows he has to work hard? He has

:36:29. > :36:31.worked hard, he is the real deal, a racing family. I remember racing in

:36:32. > :36:35.the wet with his dad many years ago. He has that mindset of what it takes

:36:36. > :36:39.in terms of commitment from an early age and lots of people watch talent

:36:40. > :36:43.shows and people have dreams and they have been doing it for six

:36:44. > :36:49.months, but these people have been doing this for over a decade. From

:36:50. > :36:52.karting. Putting in long hours, the commitment, the training. By the

:36:53. > :36:57.time they get to Formula One, they are completely focused on what it

:36:58. > :37:04.takes to drive quickly. Some of them seem to be more so than others. That

:37:05. > :37:10.is natural. There is that talent and application as well. McLaren had a

:37:11. > :37:14.fantastic Australia. This weekend they are having problems and one

:37:15. > :37:23.hour ago, the third session finished and they had all sorts of electrical

:37:24. > :37:27.problems. The same issue in Melbourne has reappeared and it is a

:37:28. > :37:37.reset sensor that brings a car back in limp mode. They could do no

:37:38. > :37:40.practice in Practice three. In terms of the driver getting out on the

:37:41. > :37:53.track and feeling comfortable, it is like hitting the practice session.

:37:54. > :37:58.They have not had much time in the car. It will take concentration to

:37:59. > :38:01.be able to focus 100% when they feel behind the rest of the teams? In

:38:02. > :38:05.these conditions and with limited runs, Jenson Button has driven in

:38:06. > :38:12.the wet and in 2009 he was the winner. Kevin Magnussen has not

:38:13. > :38:21.driven in these conditions. Where is that river into turn number four? He

:38:22. > :38:25.will learn quickly but the first few laps will be an amazing journey of

:38:26. > :38:31.discovery. You don't get that in a computer game. There is no fear. We

:38:32. > :38:45.can catch up with the rest of the free practice sessions. Then

:38:46. > :38:48.Edwards... -- Ben. Perhaps a statement of intent, Ferrari first

:38:49. > :38:52.on track on Friday. Fernando Alonso the initial pacesetter. But he

:38:53. > :38:55.damaged the floor of his car and that prevented further improvements.

:38:56. > :39:00.Kimi Raikkonen stepped up to go second-fastest. Lewis Hamilton

:39:01. > :39:03.topped the session. Lotus continue with problems, Romain Grosjean

:39:04. > :39:11.stopping. And Pastor Maldonado smoking. They completed six

:39:12. > :39:16.installation lap is between them. -- laps. Niko Hulkenberg was off. But

:39:17. > :39:27.it was deja vu at Lotus as Romain Grosjean pulled over. His team-mate

:39:28. > :39:31.did not appear at all. The fastest time was Mercedes. Kimi Raikkonen

:39:32. > :39:37.was only a few hundredths slower and Sebastian Vettel was third. Less

:39:38. > :39:40.than a tenth of a second behind. The downpour meant the track had lost

:39:41. > :39:52.grip for the final session and cars were moving around a great deal.

:39:53. > :39:55.Both Lotus cars completed 15 laps but the car looked difficult to

:39:56. > :39:58.drive whereas Mercedes was in a league of its own. Kimi Raikkonen

:39:59. > :40:01.was the nearest challenger but McLaren had a nightmare with sensor

:40:02. > :40:03.problems shutting down the engines and leaving Kevin Magnussen and

:40:04. > :40:11.Jenson Button severely short of running. That was in the dry and

:40:12. > :40:17.this is the scene. 20 minutes to go. We have a serious monsoon. Look at

:40:18. > :40:25.that. Lifting up the manhole cover. That shows the pressure. People were

:40:26. > :40:38.using the bankings to make their own mudslides a few years ago. Perfect

:40:39. > :40:44.conditions for that! We are in the paddock. What did you make of what

:40:45. > :40:48.has been happening this weekend? Kimi Raikkonen? More comfortable,

:40:49. > :40:56.more attacking, he looks like he is more comfortable with the car. I

:40:57. > :41:03.would love if this was dry, it might still dry up but it is unlikely.

:41:04. > :41:07.That is when you see the drivers taking the maximum out of their car.

:41:08. > :41:16.It takes skills to drive in a wet conditions but it neutralises the

:41:17. > :41:25.attacking somewhat. Sebastian Vettel has headed decent weekend. -- has

:41:26. > :41:27.had a decent weekend. Red Bull are reasonably happy. Preseason seems

:41:28. > :41:31.like a distant memory. Generally, coming back to earlier, it shows the

:41:32. > :41:34.development there is in Formula One and wet weather will play into the

:41:35. > :41:38.hands of Red Bull because they have a very good car in that sector. The

:41:39. > :41:52.first and last sector, in dry conditions with Mercedes, half a

:41:53. > :42:01.second over the opposition. We can find out the thinking with red Wolf.

:42:02. > :42:10.Tom Clarkson is with the brain. -- Red Bull. Adrian, this rain, you

:42:11. > :42:14.welcome it? Probably, yes. Straight-line speed is not strong so

:42:15. > :42:21.these conditions probably suit us. In Melbourne it was not as heavy but

:42:22. > :42:27.the car was very good in the wet? We had a good outing in Melbourne. Here

:42:28. > :42:34.it is difficult to know. If it is as heavy as this, they will have to

:42:35. > :42:38.delay qualifying. The scale of the project, I'll go back to that second

:42:39. > :42:42.test and here you are with a competitive racing car. How

:42:43. > :42:50.difficult has been to get to this stage? -- has it been? They are very

:42:51. > :42:54.different cars and we have little time to sort things out and we did

:42:55. > :42:59.not get very much testing on the first test, where you sort out those

:43:00. > :43:11.early problems. In private, before the public eye. The problem was the

:43:12. > :43:14.local heat problem. On our side. Because that is outside the

:43:15. > :43:25.manufacturer, it takes some time to sort out. It was not a huge problem.

:43:26. > :43:29.It will take time. When the tests come fast, it is embarrassing to be

:43:30. > :43:34.there. Knowing you have the solution but you cannot get it onto the car.

:43:35. > :43:38.What are the drivers saying? They are reasonably happy with the car.

:43:39. > :43:43.With the cornering speed, it seems very competitive in all of the

:43:44. > :43:51.overloads that we do. But it is very much an engine formula that is

:43:52. > :43:57.hampering us. I have to ask... Can you win races with this car? Or will

:43:58. > :44:01.the power unit hold you back? Where we are at the moment, it is very

:44:02. > :44:08.much the engine formula and in that sense, we are in the hands of the

:44:09. > :44:15.supplier. Good luck. Thank you. Keeping his cars quite close to his

:44:16. > :44:22.chest. Understandably so. You cannot ride off Renault? No. They have

:44:23. > :44:28.tremendous history. They brought turbo all of those years ago.

:44:29. > :44:31.Technology does not stand still. We are seeing Mercedes starting

:44:32. > :44:38.development earlier and they have done a great job. It is easy to

:44:39. > :44:45.always want everything to be lined up in your favour but that is not

:44:46. > :44:49.the nature of Formula One. Right now, Mercedes will be reaping the

:44:50. > :44:52.rewards but all of the other teams, McLaren, they will work hard and in

:44:53. > :45:01.the future, McLaren will change from Mercedes to Honda. They will enter

:45:02. > :45:12.one year behind. That could be an advantage. With Daniel Ricciardo,

:45:13. > :45:16.what he did in Australia, that surprised people with him being able

:45:17. > :45:22.to get up there, they are not out of the running because it is not all

:45:23. > :45:25.about Mercedes? Things develop quickly in Formula One and where

:45:26. > :45:29.Mercedes have the advantage is they have a very good handle on the power

:45:30. > :45:33.unit and the interaction between the internal combustion and the recovery

:45:34. > :45:43.systems. All of that electronic software working well. They are not

:45:44. > :45:46.without fault. When you are creating cutting-edge technology, you need to

:45:47. > :45:56.accept that you will get finger trouble. He replaced Mark Webber. He

:45:57. > :46:00.will be making some features for us this year. He has been looking at

:46:01. > :46:11.the preparation drivers need to make when they are in extreme heat.

:46:12. > :46:17.We are on our way to a clinic to see the physiologist who helped me

:46:18. > :46:27.prepare for hot races. In Formula 3000 in Monte Carlo I had a very bad

:46:28. > :46:32.experience. I was under prepared. I drank too much water. I crashed the

:46:33. > :46:37.car at the end of the race. I was very hot as well. I really enjoyed

:46:38. > :46:43.the challenge of preparing myself and making sure I was fully

:46:44. > :46:51.prepared. As a Formula One driver, there are some very hot races on the

:46:52. > :46:55.calendar. Today I will be explaining to you how I used to prepare as a

:46:56. > :47:04.Grand Prix driver. Knock, knock! How are you? Ready for another session?

:47:05. > :47:11.Yeah. Even as fan, I used to see drivers completely cooked and

:47:12. > :47:14.uncomfortable. These guys still did not really understand how they can

:47:15. > :47:18.prepare better to make themselves feel comfortable in the Grand Prix.

:47:19. > :47:26.That would equal performance and lap time. The engineers were not really

:47:27. > :47:31.interested in that. Science has moved on a long way. People like

:47:32. > :47:35.Simon are helping us guys feel more comfortable in the car in extreme

:47:36. > :47:39.temperatures. One of the absolute key ingredients for Simon to

:47:40. > :47:49.understand how I was feeling was this pill. It is simply a

:47:50. > :47:54.thermometer. You swallow it and we can pick up that signalled by

:47:55. > :48:03.telemetry. I am about to put on some extra gear. It was developed by

:48:04. > :48:06.Victoria Secrets. It will talk to the pill. Another very important

:48:07. > :48:16.layer is skin folds. This has a double effect. It is weight that we

:48:17. > :48:20.do not want to carry in the car and fat is an insulator. It is in our

:48:21. > :48:24.interests in hot races to make sure we are lean and measure to the

:48:25. > :48:27.nearest millimetre how much fat you are carrying on your body. Several

:48:28. > :48:35.Formula One drivers take it seriously and several do not. How

:48:36. > :48:46.much fat have I put on since I have stopped racing? You have come in at

:48:47. > :48:50.5% body fat. That is a good percent up on what you were at your leanest.

:48:51. > :48:53.We know we can elicit core temperature changes when exercise

:48:54. > :49:00.intensity is high. This fits in nicely with the hectic schedule.

:49:01. > :49:12.Modern Formula One, it has moved on a lot. There was a huge lag. The

:49:13. > :49:21.amount of effort they put in to understand what the car is doing.

:49:22. > :49:30.These hot races were very difficult. Very strong. I was

:49:31. > :49:52.unconscious. Come back around on the exit. Finish the lap. Past 18 cars

:49:53. > :49:56.on one lap. Had a puncture as well! The top end teams are starting to

:49:57. > :50:02.put more focus on this. You have to respect the heat at the end of the

:50:03. > :50:06.day. That is what makes us get quite tired at the end of the day mentally

:50:07. > :50:09.as well as getting put in the car. When we looked at how marathon

:50:10. > :50:18.runners and Ironman triathletes prepare, it is very similar. There

:50:19. > :50:22.is no opportunity to really have the effective loss of sweat of the skin

:50:23. > :50:39.to cool down. Balaclava, helmet, seat belt. Not much circulation

:50:40. > :50:46.behind. Huge amount of skin on the back of the seat. The race suit, the

:50:47. > :50:49.boots, it is not a very comfortable environment. If you are not

:50:50. > :50:52.replacing the fluids and it is being absorbed or dripping off, your core

:50:53. > :50:55.temperature will continue to rise. Once you start getting over 400

:50:56. > :50:58.Celsius, you are well and truly in the hypodermic range. Left

:50:59. > :51:03.unmanaged, that can lead onto heatstroke which can be

:51:04. > :51:17.catastrophic. People die of that. These guys are prepared as they can

:51:18. > :51:20.be to deal with the environment. In a very challenging environment like

:51:21. > :51:26.Malaysia, Mark would typically be in 40, 41 degree temperature range.

:51:27. > :51:30.There is enough going on without having to think about, am I'm ready

:51:31. > :51:39.for a tough Grand Prix? I want to recover! Here is a vile, not my

:51:40. > :51:47.blood. How do we adapt for our race? How does a body prepare? In this

:51:48. > :51:55.case, you can see the plasma in the blood has increased, if you like.

:51:56. > :51:58.When you are in those environments, your plasma will increase and you

:51:59. > :52:05.will be in a better position to perform in a better way. That

:52:06. > :52:14.volume, that watery substance expands. It increases in volume.

:52:15. > :52:18.With that increase, not only do you have larger blood volume so you have

:52:19. > :52:21.more blood distributed around the body to the working muscles and the

:52:22. > :52:25.brain, you have more fluid available in a way that helps your hydration

:52:26. > :52:30.status. In sports and Formula One, people could take advantage of the

:52:31. > :52:32.rules and cheat. Exactly right. There are some medications around

:52:33. > :52:41.which are called plasma volume expanders. It is considered a form

:52:42. > :52:49.of cheating. The best way to do it by natural means is by some heat

:52:50. > :52:52.training protocols. Hence why it is important to get drug tested so the

:52:53. > :53:04.naughty boys can get caught, which never happens in our sport, so,

:53:05. > :53:08.good! We are about to get into the little pool. This looks very

:53:09. > :53:14.straightforward. It is a huge amount of water. I would use this before a

:53:15. > :53:17.Grand Prix, after a Grand Prix, to get myself in a much more

:53:18. > :53:21.comfortable environment. Given all the effort that goes into the car,

:53:22. > :53:24.sometimes the culture in Formula One is that driver preparation was not

:53:25. > :53:29.quite as important come race day, as it was. You always hear in Malaysia,

:53:30. > :53:39.someone faints on the grid or someone pushes the car towards the

:53:40. > :53:49.great. -- the grid. I am cool as a cucumber, ready to go.

:53:50. > :53:59.Absolutely fascinating stuff. I am joined by the Formula One paddock

:54:00. > :54:04.doctor, who has been around for 25 years. Thank you very much for

:54:05. > :54:08.joining us. You saw that piece that Mark did. That is how he prepared

:54:09. > :54:11.for a dry race, a hot race like this. 25 years ago, was it

:54:12. > :54:15.different? It was completely different. The cars were much more

:54:16. > :54:19.physical. They had no steering power. There were no minimum

:54:20. > :54:23.dimensions. The drivers were in a bad position inside the cars. It is

:54:24. > :54:30.important to be strong in the muscle. We spent a lot of time in

:54:31. > :54:36.the gym to create a superman. It was quite hard sometimes. Now the car is

:54:37. > :54:44.easier. There is no more necessity to be strong for the steering wheel,

:54:45. > :54:48.which is light. There is more space. It is easier to drive physically but

:54:49. > :54:54.it is more demanding mentally. We shift the training on the mental

:54:55. > :55:00.side. We work 50% on the brain and 50% on the muscle. How do you make a

:55:01. > :55:12.driver mentally stronger? In Formula One, a driver needs to be mentally

:55:13. > :55:16.strong. They are strong, for sure. When you work with the young

:55:17. > :55:19.drivers, maybe you find someone who is not strong enough and you have to

:55:20. > :55:30.help to increase their self-confidence, the ability to

:55:31. > :55:34.manage their psyche. -- anxiety. We work on this. The big difference

:55:35. > :55:38.between a top driver and a normal person is the economy of the brain.

:55:39. > :55:41.We did some research. When you compare a Formula One driver with a

:55:42. > :55:45.student, the difference is not in performance. The reaction time is

:55:46. > :55:48.the same. We thought a driver was superman. The big difference is in

:55:49. > :55:55.brain economy. We saw with a scan the driver is much less prepared

:55:56. > :56:06.than a student. Same speed but one consumes half the fuel. That is a

:56:07. > :56:15.big advantage. They are reserving their brain energy? You can extend

:56:16. > :56:19.your performance for a long time. You can stay with the pace of

:56:20. > :56:24.qualifying for a longer time. You have space in the brain to do more

:56:25. > :56:27.than one thing. This is the evolution of the training. When the

:56:28. > :56:35.drivers are young, they are more expensive. They grasp the steering

:56:36. > :56:39.wheel, they are busy. When they grow up, they increase in self confidence

:56:40. > :56:50.and learn to drive in a more smooth way. I think we need to do a feature

:56:51. > :56:54.on this. A fascinating chat. The deluge continued for a further 50

:56:55. > :57:03.minutes. Finally the qualifying did get under way. Qualifying will be

:57:04. > :57:08.starting in a few moments. The heavy rain has stopped falling and the

:57:09. > :57:13.track is beginning to clear. It will be very challenging for the drivers.

:57:14. > :57:19.All the sessions have been in the drive. But the new cars, they are

:57:20. > :57:24.learning how to get the best out of the hybrid power units. A very

:57:25. > :57:28.different circuit today. Just glimpsed the green on the tyre. It

:57:29. > :57:33.looks as though Sebastian Vettel will be going for intermediate

:57:34. > :57:39.straight off, rather than going for the extreme wet. If there is

:57:40. > :57:45.standing water, you go for the wets but if there is none, you can have

:57:46. > :57:51.the intermediates. There is so much residual heat in the tarmac, despite

:57:52. > :58:01.the water, the rain sort of evaporates off quite quickly.

:58:02. > :58:08.TEAM RADIO: Looking at the safety car, we will go for intermediate

:58:09. > :58:13.tyres. Look how early Mercedes are doing that. It does not look like we

:58:14. > :58:17.will get any more rain. Maybe they are expecting. Maybe they have seen

:58:18. > :58:22.a weather forecast. This might be the driest conditions. You are not

:58:23. > :58:28.so nervous about the number of laps you are doing in this part of the

:58:29. > :58:33.session. A lot of the energy is taken out of the engine in terms of

:58:34. > :58:42.not running the same rpm. There is more drag. In terms of the

:58:43. > :58:50.reliability package, there is less of a concern in the wet. In 2010,

:58:51. > :58:55.both McLaren and Ferrari were caught out by not going out at the

:58:56. > :59:01.beginning of the qualifiers. That is what Mercedes are doing, being safe.

:59:02. > :59:06.They are saying it is bright and sunny in Kuala Lumpur. You do get

:59:07. > :59:12.localised weather patterns. Temperatures dropped to 30 degrees

:59:13. > :59:17.but it is now up to 34. The temperature is a relatively cool 26

:59:18. > :59:23.degrees. Still very high humidity, of course. Lewis Hamilton will be

:59:24. > :59:26.first out onto the circuit, just ahead of Nico Rosberg. It is

:59:27. > :59:31.incredibly early when you consider we have a minute and a half to go

:59:32. > :59:36.before the session starts. If you are in pole position, you sit on the

:59:37. > :59:41.grid for up to a minute and you are concerned about that because of the

:59:42. > :59:47.amount of heat. There are no fans. Maybe they are going down, you go

:59:48. > :59:53.out of the garage with an engine temperature about 75, 80 degrees. On

:59:54. > :59:56.the track, there are pressurised systems which allow them to go

:59:57. > :00:01.beyond 100 degrees. If they have gone down there with them relatively

:00:02. > :00:06.cool, they are doing the pre-heating process. The downside is it is a

:00:07. > :00:10.full wet on the McLaren. They are not taking any chances with Kevin

:00:11. > :00:16.Magnusson. The downside of sitting there for so long, the cars are

:00:17. > :00:21.coming out and losing temperature quite simply as you sit there. If

:00:22. > :00:25.you drop at the operating window, it can be difficult.

:00:26. > :00:33.TEAM RADIO: we are expecting rain for this session, so we are using

:00:34. > :00:48.the full wets. Full wets on both the McLarens. They have decided that is

:00:49. > :00:58.the way to go for both the cars. There is no block depth. The block

:00:59. > :01:00.depth allows movement in the tyre and you can get heat into the

:01:01. > :01:11.compound. Problems for Marcus Ericsson. He cannot get the car

:01:12. > :01:15.running. That is not good. The team will be able to come out of the pit

:01:16. > :01:24.lane and help to start the car. Kimi Raikkonen is not out yet. He is on

:01:25. > :01:30.the intermediate. They may be waiting a while. As they are trying

:01:31. > :01:35.to get out of the spray, they will probably need to wait for them to be

:01:36. > :01:43.in the middle of five or six off further around the lap. Marussia has

:01:44. > :01:48.gone out together. Jean-Eric Vergne was very impressive in the wet

:01:49. > :01:58.conditions in Australia. Sebastian Vettel has left it that little bit

:01:59. > :02:02.longer. Kimi Raikkonen just about to come out. Let's ride on board with

:02:03. > :02:09.Lewis Hamilton. There does not seem to be much standing water around at

:02:10. > :02:13.all. Taking the wide line. That enables you to get off the rubber

:02:14. > :02:16.which has been impregnated on the tarmac. Rubber on rubber with water

:02:17. > :02:20.in between is particularly slippery. You want to try to avoid that if you

:02:21. > :02:27.can. Both the Lotus cars are out nice and early. They missed that in

:02:28. > :02:30.Australia. The car is not particularly developed but this

:02:31. > :02:33.session might give them a bit more chance. Otherwise they could be at

:02:34. > :02:45.danger of being eliminated. TEAM RADIO: how is the track? OK for

:02:46. > :02:58.intermediate at the moment. A slightly bizarre question. One

:02:59. > :03:02.extreme to the other. Fair to say how long before you can consider

:03:03. > :03:15.putting a slick on? At no time is that right at the moment. You would

:03:16. > :03:19.lose temperature from the tyre. Once you drop out of the operating window

:03:20. > :03:23.for the surface of the tyre, you do not generate any traction. The

:03:24. > :03:31.chemical interaction. Lewis Hamilton is the first to go in the flying

:03:32. > :03:35.lap. The first segment. The target is not to be in the bottom six. The

:03:36. > :03:39.lower six will be the lower on the grid.

:03:40. > :03:45.TEAM RADIO: These are good conditions for this tyre. Let's get

:03:46. > :03:50.ready for the intermediates. It is very interesting. Not much to choose

:03:51. > :03:54.between the intermediate and the full wet in these kind of conditions

:03:55. > :03:58.in Australia. I wonder if it will be the same case here today. Hamilton

:03:59. > :04:04.and Rosberg, the first guys to be on the... A big plume of spray coming

:04:05. > :04:18.down towards turn nine. You can see the run of water coming out of turn

:04:19. > :04:27.nine. It is not giving them any big issues as we come out of turn 11.

:04:28. > :04:32.The high-speed chicane at 12. You try everything you can to keep off

:04:33. > :04:36.the white lines. They tend to use grip paint. You want to try to avoid

:04:37. > :04:41.it if possible. Lewis Hamilton was faster on the middle sector. Overall

:04:42. > :04:47.you would say Rosberg has the edge. It depends on which one gets it

:04:48. > :04:54.together. A little tentative on the turn in. A beautiful line out of the

:04:55. > :05:02.corner. What is the immediate response from the team-mate of Lewis

:05:03. > :05:07.Hamilton? He outmatches his team member.

:05:08. > :05:14.TEAM RADIO: We think intermediates are the right tyre. Box this lap.

:05:15. > :05:21.McLaren now decide to go for the intermediates. The gap between what

:05:22. > :05:25.they were doing in the dry and what they were doing on intermediate

:05:26. > :05:28.tyres, what is it, 39 seconds? Let's see what the others are doing.

:05:29. > :05:33.Valterri Bottas has gone third in the Williams. He loves these

:05:34. > :05:40.conditions. What about Alonso? Is it a quick lap? He goes third. Look at

:05:41. > :05:47.the gap! A massive gap in terms of time. Three seconds between Mercedes

:05:48. > :05:51.and Alonso. There may be a bit of traffic at play. The Mercedes cars

:05:52. > :05:58.were first out at the beginning of the session. Nico Hulkenberg has

:05:59. > :06:01.popped into third, these guys are staying out. How many laps can you

:06:02. > :06:10.do in these conditions before you have to come in? Although they are

:06:11. > :06:14.taking edges of the corner of the block, the way the intermediate tyre

:06:15. > :06:17.is put together, there is a lot more connection between the tyre itself.

:06:18. > :06:25.Keep the temperature down on the surface and you are absolutely fine.

:06:26. > :06:27.Daniel Ricciardo in third. Still a massive 1.7 seconds away from

:06:28. > :06:47.Rosberg. Sebastian Vettel is seventh. Kimi Raikkonen is up to

:06:48. > :06:50.fifth. Then the Ferrari of Alonso. Simply not fast enough in these

:06:51. > :06:58.conditions. Here comes the two Mercedes once again. Lewis Hamilton

:06:59. > :07:09.across the line. 1:57.2. He is not any quicker than Rosberg. Problems

:07:10. > :07:12.again. He is being told to bring it back into the pits. Let's see what

:07:13. > :07:16.Valterri Bottas does. It will not be enough to challenge the top guys.

:07:17. > :07:24.Where is it? He is eighth at the moment. Colby Ashley, 16th place.

:07:25. > :07:33.Just out of the drops. -- drop-zone. Chilton is down there at the moment.

:07:34. > :07:40.The times are changing all the time. We are still waiting for a lap time

:07:41. > :07:51.from Ericsson and Magnussen. On with Nico Hulkenberg. He did a very good

:07:52. > :07:55.first lap. Can he get any closer to the Mercedes and perhaps Pip

:07:56. > :07:59.Ricciardo? -- pip. That was an improvement in time. He is no

:08:00. > :08:07.quicker. These guys can deliver the best lap on that opening lap. That

:08:08. > :08:13.is very impressive indeed. Daniel Ricciardo. Can he find more pace? He

:08:14. > :08:16.stayed out there. Drivers will put another set of intermediates on if

:08:17. > :08:22.they think the track is improving. No improvement in time for Daniel

:08:23. > :08:32.Ricciardo. He remains in third. Keep an eye on Raikkonen as well.

:08:33. > :08:37.TEAM RADIO: The rain is getting heavier. There is definitely a

:08:38. > :08:40.little bit more rain falling once again. Adrian Sutil normally likes

:08:41. > :08:45.these conditions but he is in 16th place at the moment. Remember, it

:08:46. > :08:51.does not matter where you are in the top 16. Maybe if you are down in

:08:52. > :08:54.13th, 14th, 15th, you start to worry but if you are in the top ten, you

:08:55. > :09:05.should be pretty relaxed about making it through.

:09:06. > :09:15.TEAM RADIO: We have an issue with the energy store. They are trying to

:09:16. > :09:18.reset the system. The message from Lotus, looking out the back of the

:09:19. > :09:23.commentary box, the rain does not seem to be much heavier. Unless that

:09:24. > :09:29.is information they have got from some member of the team upwind of

:09:30. > :09:31.the circuit... That is a good point. Magnussen is out there on the

:09:32. > :09:41.intermediates. McLaren hopefully have turned it round in time. Alonso

:09:42. > :09:44.has gone quicker than he had done so he moves up to fourth in the

:09:45. > :09:48.Ferrari. It shows the track conditions are still OK. McLaren

:09:49. > :09:55.effectively got it wrong putting them out on full wets initially.

:09:56. > :09:58.They should recover. A bit of luck for McLaren. Had it started to rain

:09:59. > :10:07.harder, they could have been in trouble. Magnussen stays wide on

:10:08. > :10:12.purpose to try to find more grip. TEAM RADIO: Expect the weather to

:10:13. > :10:17.stay the same to the end of the session. Different report. Into 14th

:10:18. > :10:22.but not safe and secure by any means. They all have the same

:10:23. > :10:25.weather report. The difference in the information could come from

:10:26. > :10:38.having a team member positioned away from the circuit. Adrian Sutil is in

:10:39. > :10:42.the drop zone. Still there. He is in 17th. The car has been a bit of a

:10:43. > :10:49.struggle. It does not seem to be easier. His team-mate has gone 12th.

:10:50. > :10:53.Gutierrez was quick in the wet conditions. We saw this last year.

:10:54. > :10:56.Can Hamilton go any quicker? No, he cannot. Still second to his

:10:57. > :11:04.team-mate, Nico Rosberg. A classic confrontation between them. A

:11:05. > :11:10.massive margin over everyone else. 1.7 seconds. I'm sure Mercedes

:11:11. > :11:13.managed to do some decent wet testing at the early stages in

:11:14. > :11:22.Spain. They were playing with engine mapping things and also clever

:11:23. > :11:29.devices. Incredibly small distance. One meter or something around the

:11:30. > :11:34.lap. That is a good point. You would want an extendable nose just to make

:11:35. > :11:39.things longer at the finishing line! They almost have that this year!

:11:40. > :11:42.Jenson Button, on a lap at the moment, so is Kevin Magnussen, but

:11:43. > :11:53.Jenson Button, trying to move into that top 16 because he is currently

:11:54. > :11:56.in the drops. -- drop-zone. We have Adrian Sutil, two Marussia cars,

:11:57. > :12:02.Caterham, one Sauber and one McLaren. Also in danger is Pastor

:12:03. > :12:10.Maldonado, Jean-Eric Vergne from Toro Rosso. That is surprising, I

:12:11. > :12:15.thought he would be quicker. What will Kevin Magnussen do? He is in

:12:16. > :12:20.12th place. McLaren, after such a very impressive form in Australia,

:12:21. > :12:33.what is going on? They have this revised front end and it does not

:12:34. > :12:44.seem to be working. Paying the price for not practising? They are working

:12:45. > :12:52.through some traffic as well. They have fresher tyres. Three laps,

:12:53. > :13:03.potentially, before the chequered flag. There should be enough

:13:04. > :13:14.inherent speed to not see them into the drop-zone. Jean-Eric Vergne is

:13:15. > :13:18.the next one. Not many behind that are dangerous. Pastor Maldonado

:13:19. > :13:24.could move up. Romain Grosjean, ninth quickest. Lotus, 15 kilometres

:13:25. > :13:29.per hour down on on some of the faster cars. Romain Grosjean, up in

:13:30. > :13:36.ninth place, that is outstanding. Pastor Maldonado has some work to do

:13:37. > :13:39.to move into the safety zone. It is car balance and the confidence of

:13:40. > :13:48.the driver and the ability to get the power down. They have had a

:13:49. > :13:52.terrible start, Lotus, no doubt. With the inherent pace on that team

:13:53. > :13:58.as a World Championship team, so they will want to get on top of

:13:59. > :14:03.those issues. Some green times, drivers are still setting individual

:14:04. > :14:06.sector times that are improving. It does not look like that little bit

:14:07. > :14:15.of extra rain is slowing things down. It would not take much more.

:14:16. > :14:19.On with Felipe Massa. Pole position in the past year but he has never

:14:20. > :14:28.finished on the podium. See how he gets on. Can he move up? TEAM RADIO:

:14:29. > :14:36.It is going to rain more. Reporting that there is more rain to come.

:14:37. > :14:41.Sebastian Vettel back after whatever problems they had with Red Bull,

:14:42. > :14:44.they have sent him on his way. He is up to third, four tenths of a second

:14:45. > :14:56.behind Mercedes, they have more threat and the track is still

:14:57. > :15:04.delivering decent lap times. Four minutes left to go on this first

:15:05. > :15:06.part of qualifying. Pastor Maldonado in the drop zone, as is Adrian

:15:07. > :15:15.Sutil, Chilton and Ericsson. Caterham, this is the home race,

:15:16. > :15:25.they are owned by Malaysia and Tony Fernandes.

:15:26. > :15:38.Oh my goodness! Well out of shape, isn't he? Rally style. Certainly

:15:39. > :15:41.pushing the limits of the rear grip. Fantastic to watch and that is what

:15:42. > :15:47.these new cars are delivering. Wet and dry.

:15:48. > :16:01.That was a good exit. Fernando Alonso could improve on his current

:16:02. > :16:04.position. Very close in that group from Nico Hulkenberg all the way

:16:05. > :16:07.down to Fernando Alonso and even Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen.

:16:08. > :16:26.Jean-Eric Vergne is in the pits, getting intermediate tyres on. Both

:16:27. > :16:29.Toro Rosso cars in danger. Jules Bianchi crossing the line and not

:16:30. > :16:36.changing his position. Riding with Esteban Gutierrez. Pushed down to

:16:37. > :16:44.14th position. That was a better lap from Fernando Alonso, pushing Daniel

:16:45. > :16:50.Ricciardo down. Esteban Gutierrez generally has a very good touch in

:16:51. > :17:06.the wet. Finding his power coming out of turn Number ten. Through this

:17:07. > :17:09.high-speed chicane. Into the braking zone, which is never ending, it

:17:10. > :17:13.lends into 14, large amount of understeer and then onto the power,

:17:14. > :17:16.the power slide onto that long back straight. Normally this is where the

:17:17. > :17:20.DRS would be deployed but these conditions it is not. The middle

:17:21. > :17:23.sector is not any better. I am not sure this will improve his current

:17:24. > :17:28.overall lap time. He is currently in 14th place. No, he stays there.

:17:29. > :17:39.Danger territory but I think you should be OK. I don't see anybody in

:17:40. > :17:43.the drop zone going massively faster, except perhaps Pastor

:17:44. > :18:06.Maldonado. Earlier, McLaren we were talking about, and Jenson Button has

:18:07. > :18:09.been struggling to make headway. It is like they peaked immediately and

:18:10. > :18:14.then struggled. Marcus Ericsson has crashed. What has happened? This

:18:15. > :18:17.will effectively end the session. Anyone else trying to improve will

:18:18. > :18:21.be unable to do so. Turn number four, clearly something has happened

:18:22. > :18:24.with the braking. He said he had never driven in the wet before in a

:18:25. > :18:28.Formula One car. Red flag. The session has come to an end. Well,

:18:29. > :18:31.the marshals are very quick to attend but the session has been

:18:32. > :18:34.stopped. Marcus Ericsson, the Swedish rookie, his first season in

:18:35. > :18:40.Formula One, he raced in Australia and he failed to finish, he had a

:18:41. > :18:47.mechanical problem. But clearly, he has been caught out. We will have to

:18:48. > :18:51.wait for the replay. He is certainly moving around and hopefully we will

:18:52. > :18:56.see him coming out of that car very soon. There is no standing water in

:18:57. > :19:01.the braking zone, so unless there has been an incident with his car.

:19:02. > :19:11.From a driving point of view, what possibly could have happened?

:19:12. > :19:17.Touching the kerbs? Or recharging the energy store. It looks like a

:19:18. > :19:26.fairly contained accident, in terms of getting one of the marker boards,

:19:27. > :19:30.they are picking that up. It does not look like there were any obvious

:19:31. > :19:36.marks on the grass. In the fullness of time we will get the replay.

:19:37. > :19:41.Coming out of turn number two. Short shift, keeping off the racing line.

:19:42. > :19:47.He is already fighting with the rear of the car and he gets onto the kerb

:19:48. > :20:01.and he loses control. Having some difficulty. Oversteer, trying to get

:20:02. > :20:04.that power down. Taking out the marker board, it looks dramatic but

:20:05. > :20:08.it is only polystyrene. The damage has been done. As accidents go, it

:20:09. > :20:13.was dramatic but not as big as some we have seen in the past. The car

:20:14. > :20:19.swiping the barrier and then coming back across the track. The good news

:20:20. > :20:22.is there were no other cars. Well, actually, Esteban Gutierrez had seen

:20:23. > :20:35.things because he was over on the inside. Very straightforward driver

:20:36. > :20:39.mistake. Another look from Esteban Gutierrez, he did actually have to

:20:40. > :20:43.move over and stop but he had plenty of space. And Esteban Gutierrez has

:20:44. > :20:48.made it through to the next part of qualifying. Marcus Ericsson, sadly,

:20:49. > :20:55.is out. And he was the slowest of the 22 cars as well. Slower than his

:20:56. > :21:03.team-mate, Kamui Kobayashi. Sebastian Vettel... He took a trip

:21:04. > :21:11.onto the grass. But he had gone third fastest before that. Really, I

:21:12. > :21:15.do not think that affected him much. He knew he was close to the limit

:21:16. > :21:22.and he was trying to modulate his brake pedal and he started to lose

:21:23. > :21:26.the rear end. The first session has come to a conclusion after that

:21:27. > :21:30.accident for Marcus Ericsson. He is fine and the drivers that are out of

:21:31. > :21:32.the session are Pastor Maldonado, Adrian Sutil, Kamui Kobayashi, Max

:21:33. > :21:39.Chilton and, of course, Marcus Ericsson.

:21:40. > :21:53.Alexander will hold my brolly. Tough times. Marcus Ericsson crashing and

:21:54. > :21:57.the boys felt he was wrestling with his car. Absolutely, it has been

:21:58. > :22:01.very difficult for us, continuing from Australia. We did not get any

:22:02. > :22:06.real running on Friday and to have the qualifying in the wet, Marcus

:22:07. > :22:10.has never driven in the wet before. It was quite difficult. Small

:22:11. > :22:19.mistake and unfortunately quite a big incident. It was very tough.

:22:20. > :22:30.Talk us through this. Turn number three is high-speed and he had a lot

:22:31. > :22:33.of oversteer. He was trying to put the power down and the way these

:22:34. > :22:40.units work with these conditions, he got out of shape. Really unfortunate

:22:41. > :22:44.for him. To be fair, it is the first time he has driven that car in the

:22:45. > :22:47.wet. Very difficult conditions. It must be extremely tricky and

:22:48. > :22:51.daunting, this is Formula One, he has to compete against everyone else

:22:52. > :22:54.but to never have driven in the wet before, it did not happen in

:22:55. > :23:01.testing, they were not ready. Very difficult. From his perspective,

:23:02. > :23:06.what is going to happen? We will have to wait and see. The team will

:23:07. > :23:10.be able to fix the car but it was very difficult, I can speak from

:23:11. > :23:15.experience, my first time in the wet in Montreal, you have no ex -- no

:23:16. > :23:29.idea what to expect. The pace was quite good, considering. Hopefully

:23:30. > :23:41.it will be dry. And we will have the reliability to show we have the

:23:42. > :23:45.pace. He was going well. In terms of being a new driver in Formula One,

:23:46. > :23:54.is it about pushing as much as you can and try not to crash? We want to

:23:55. > :23:58.push 100% and in qualifying you have two, maybe not in practice. I don't

:23:59. > :24:01.think anyone was going to be upset or frustrated with the fact that

:24:02. > :24:05.happened. We will bounce back tomorrow. Looking at that session,

:24:06. > :24:11.we could see the both times, Caterham and Marussia, but Marussia,

:24:12. > :24:21.it is the battle. What is the feeling in the Caterham camp? They

:24:22. > :24:25.have the new Ferrari engine. They are quite strong compared to last

:24:26. > :24:28.year, we have to work very hard. But in our defence, since the season

:24:29. > :24:39.started, we have not had a strong Friday and in Australia we could get

:24:40. > :24:43.into Q2 based on merit. We did not have a Friday to set things up and

:24:44. > :24:47.in Bahrain next week, we hopefully will have that strong Friday and in

:24:48. > :24:56.qualifying we can be much stronger. Early days. How important is to get

:24:57. > :25:01.those double points at the end the season? Knowing the rest of the

:25:02. > :25:05.teams fighting for the end point. Could it be that we look at the

:25:06. > :25:08.scrap the front but also at the back as well? Those double points are

:25:09. > :25:12.playing to our advantage because it will be later when we start to see

:25:13. > :25:20.improvements. And I think, everybody will bring the update, but it will

:25:21. > :25:23.be big for us. We hopefully can keep with Renault on reliability so there

:25:24. > :25:33.are a very large number of good people involved and I have no doubt

:25:34. > :25:36.that we will make big steps forward. The reserve driver, GP2, are you

:25:37. > :25:47.desperate to get into that seat? The drivers need as much time as they

:25:48. > :25:54.can. And my focus is on GP2. The second part of qualifying gets under

:25:55. > :26:01.way. Kimi Raikkonen is fairly on in the queue. A slight difference in

:26:02. > :26:09.Tyre choice going on. At the moment, we have the cars on the full wet

:26:10. > :26:12.tyre. At this stage, the intermediates on the Ferrari. We

:26:13. > :26:16.will keep an eye on that and see what they will do. Full wets for

:26:17. > :26:22.Sergio Perez, who is going out of the pit lane at the moment. The

:26:23. > :26:28.Force India is on its way. Quite a lot of spray about. We can see there

:26:29. > :26:34.is more moisture. A bit more standing water. It would be a bit

:26:35. > :26:39.more of a challenge for them. Domain is heavier than at the end of the

:26:40. > :26:46.first session. We saw the water coming out the drains. So much

:26:47. > :26:58.saturation in the ground it does not have that much run-off. We are on a

:26:59. > :27:02.hill so it will make its way down. The Ferrari is tentatively trying to

:27:03. > :27:07.find its way around. It's not just about feeling good grip, you are

:27:08. > :27:13.trying to get out of the spray. You can see from the on-board image with

:27:14. > :27:19.the Williams, the spinning of the car in front. They do not have

:27:20. > :27:23.window wipers on their advisers. They do have heated visors. That

:27:24. > :27:30.helps the difference between hot breath and humidity. Struggling to

:27:31. > :27:44.find some space, the amount of cars on track. It is a very good camera

:27:45. > :27:49.angle. TEAM RADIO: There is a bit of water so change to the other tyres.

:27:50. > :28:04.Ferrari have got it a bit wrong so they are going onto the full wet.

:28:05. > :28:07.That has happened before. Fernando Alonso has had the intermediates

:28:08. > :28:11.and, just as the track was drying, they put the full wet on. Tactically

:28:12. > :28:15.they have made two errors in two races. We have a red flag. Let's try

:28:16. > :28:18.to see what has happened. I am trying to spot what might have

:28:19. > :28:31.occurred. At turn nine, Daniil Kvyat. We have contact with two

:28:32. > :28:35.cars. We are getting an on-board view of what happened. He went to

:28:36. > :28:43.the inside. There was plenty of space. He whacked the front wheel of

:28:44. > :28:51.Fernando. It does not look like he did anything wrong. The second part

:28:52. > :28:59.of qualifying restarts after that incident. We are back up and running

:29:00. > :29:05.to see who will be in the top ten. Conditions are fairly even. The rain

:29:06. > :29:12.is still falling. There is standing water. There is more water around

:29:13. > :29:19.than in the first part. I am not sure the intermediates will be much

:29:20. > :29:24.good. The long corners would be fairly straightforward to take dry

:29:25. > :29:31.in the flat. In the spray comic you get unsighted. Valterri Bottas is

:29:32. > :29:36.following the cars with the mechanics. It looks like they will

:29:37. > :29:42.get that car turned around in just over 11 minutes of the session. It

:29:43. > :29:46.was the car of Kimi Raikkonen going down the pit lane. Sebastian Vettel

:29:47. > :29:50.is on his way down to the exit. Let's see if he can produce another

:29:51. > :29:55.quick performers like he did in the first part of qualifying. He was

:29:56. > :29:59.third fastest. I wonder if he can repeat that. We have the one red

:30:00. > :30:14.ball through, that of Romain Grosjean. A big slide by Valterri

:30:15. > :30:18.Bottas. It does seem to be a bit of a handful. We may well see Valterri

:30:19. > :30:27.Bottas back in, going on to the full wet. Alonso has just come past me on

:30:28. > :30:35.full wet tyres. He was cried aggressor. -- quite aggressive. They

:30:36. > :30:42.have managed to fix his car and send him on his way once more. Gutierrez

:30:43. > :30:53.is the fastest out. I am sure we will see Valterri Bottas coming back

:30:54. > :30:59.into the pits. It did seem to be a big handful for him. There is the

:31:00. > :31:04.repaired Ferrari of Fernando Alonso. No, Valterri Bottas has stayed out

:31:05. > :31:12.there. He has tried to stay out on the intermediates. The rain is

:31:13. > :31:25.pretty steady. He wants to see if he can deliver and find some grip. It

:31:26. > :31:29.is not just about the standing water, it is about trying to get the

:31:30. > :31:33.heat. A massive oversteer as he drops down into the apex of Turn

:31:34. > :31:35.two. We have seen him perform in damp conditions extremely

:31:36. > :31:38.impressively in Canada last year. He is not afraid of the conditions.

:31:39. > :31:46.Hamilton is setting the pace in the first sector. Valterri Bottas is

:31:47. > :31:53.going very deep into Turn four. Kimi Raikkonen is ahead of him, in the

:31:54. > :32:01.Ferrari. Confirmation that Daniil Kvyat will take a visit to the

:32:02. > :32:07.stewards along with Fernando Alonso. Hamilton is going slightly quicker.

:32:08. > :32:10.He has done it in the middle sector. He was slightly faster than Nico

:32:11. > :32:16.Rosberg. It looks like Hamilton may have the edge over his team-mate.

:32:17. > :32:21.Let's see if anyone else is in the ballpark. They are looking at

:32:22. > :32:31.lapping the first sector by about 29 seconds. No-one else is quicker. Not

:32:32. > :32:35.as fast as the Mercedes. Here we are with both Mercedes drivers, eager to

:32:36. > :32:39.beat each other. They are so eager to beat each other, they must not

:32:40. > :32:46.throw away the opportunity and let another team in. As you lose

:32:47. > :32:59.yourself in your thoughts in the cockpit, Hamilton has always led the

:33:00. > :33:08.way. Not as quick. Rosberg has always had Hamilton ahead of him.

:33:09. > :33:13.Turn number 15. Kevin Magnussen, see what he can do. McLaren seem to be

:33:14. > :33:21.struggling in that first part. Kimi Raikkonen has gone third. Marcus

:33:22. > :33:25.Ericsson goes third. That is more promising. Certainly, on the full

:33:26. > :33:34.wets. The McLaren seems to be working better. Daniel Ricciardo

:33:35. > :33:40.seems to be working harder in the middle sector. Showing tremendous

:33:41. > :33:43.pace. Just teetering on the entry to the corner but just about keeping

:33:44. > :33:53.things under control. See what it is. Two minutes, but he splits

:33:54. > :33:57.Mercedes. That was a good lap. You could see the grip generated as he

:33:58. > :34:11.turned into that apex. Another long corner. Romain Grosjean struggling

:34:12. > :34:20.with traction. We continue to ride with Romain Grosjean. Through ten,

:34:21. > :34:34.into 11. Some oversteer as he turns into the apex. Traffic ahead of him.

:34:35. > :34:42.Into 12. Just listen. Very gentle. 13, and then understeer, takes the

:34:43. > :34:48.wide line. Onto the back straight. Makes an adjustment. He must go

:34:49. > :34:51.faster, try harder. Here's hoping that will make his performance

:34:52. > :34:57.better as he approaches the braking in 15. The aim is top ten and it

:34:58. > :35:00.would be major if Lotus could do that. 6.5 minutes left. Romain

:35:01. > :35:05.Grosjean, 13th on his first-time lap. And he goes into 10th place.

:35:06. > :35:08.Lots of cars potentially behind him, including Felipe Massa, both

:35:09. > :35:18.Williams cars are out of the top ten. As in Australia, Williams does

:35:19. > :35:24.not like the wet conditions as much. Not as much downforce as the other

:35:25. > :35:32.cars. In the dry it has good straight-line speed but in the wet

:35:33. > :35:36.it loses overall grip levels. Both Toro Rosso cars in the drop-zone

:35:37. > :35:44.currently. Riding with Nico Hulkenberg, currently in fifth

:35:45. > :35:51.place. The long back straight. Oversteer on entry. He is only in

:35:52. > :35:55.sixth gear coming down. You might get up to seventh in some areas with

:35:56. > :36:03.the increased drag from the wet tyres and a reduced speed, as you

:36:04. > :36:07.leave the corner. You can see the massive reduction in top speed.

:36:08. > :36:14.Sebastian Vettel in second, splitting Mercedes. Both Red Bulls

:36:15. > :36:27.up there. Nico Rosberg is fastest in the first sector. Five minutes to

:36:28. > :36:31.go. In the drop-zone... Sauber, Williams and then one McLaren and

:36:32. > :36:38.Jenson Button. Again, Kevin Magnussen looking quicker than

:36:39. > :36:46.Jenson Button in these conditions. Nip and tuck between Rosberg and

:36:47. > :36:49.Hamilton. We have to presume that Rosberg has encountered some traffic

:36:50. > :36:57.or some other difficulty in that sector as Hamilton completes the

:36:58. > :37:09.track. He does further improve his time. Will this be enough to promote

:37:10. > :37:14.Jenson Button into the top ten? Let us wait and see. Yes, well, he is

:37:15. > :37:19.just in there at the moment in ninth place, but there is no security.

:37:20. > :37:31.Button in 10th place, in the danger zone once again. He failed to make

:37:32. > :37:43.it in Australia. Magnussen! He is off, in the gravel. Recovering from

:37:44. > :37:49.that mistake. But great instinct to recover. Well, that was scary. See

:37:50. > :37:53.what happened here. He lost the rear end very early. And that long,

:37:54. > :38:03.graceful slide but no points for that. He nearly takes a bird with

:38:04. > :38:06.him! Watching from on-board. He locked up his front right initially

:38:07. > :38:11.and then, as the generator unit does its thing in recovery mode, he

:38:12. > :38:16.starts to drift. The equivalent of pulling the handbrake and he gets

:38:17. > :38:21.into that slide. These gravel traps are quite solid, in others you might

:38:22. > :38:25.have sunk in. You seem to be able to get out. Rosberg is on a good lap

:38:26. > :38:33.but Hamilton is matching him, once again. So little to choose between

:38:34. > :38:36.them. Is it worth them both gunning like this when there is still

:38:37. > :38:41.another session? They are comfortably in the top ten. Do they

:38:42. > :38:44.need to be doing these laps? It is a case of Mercedes doing belt and

:38:45. > :38:52.braces, it would be easy to say, bring the boys in, but we have seen

:38:53. > :38:56.changing weather conditions. They are doing belt and braces. Another

:38:57. > :39:10.improvement by Hamilton on his previous mark. Can Rosberg get past

:39:11. > :39:16.these Red Bulls. He does. Hulkenberg holding onto a fine fifth place,

:39:17. > :39:26.ahead of Ferraris. He was being discussed as a future Ferrari driver

:39:27. > :39:33.and he finds himself in front. Kevin Magnussen, trying to keep his cool.

:39:34. > :39:37.They are blowing dry ice into the cockpit, and am I thinking correctly

:39:38. > :39:50.when I say that dry ice is effectively carbon dioxide? That

:39:51. > :39:56.cannot be good! It is not poisonous, do not worry, that is carbon

:39:57. > :40:06.monoxide. Valtteri Bottas on the outside. Daniel Ricciardo is still

:40:07. > :40:10.in fourth place with that time. Still in fourth place. No change for

:40:11. > :40:17.him. And Williams, sliding for Sergio Perez, in the Force India. He

:40:18. > :40:22.is currently in the top ten, do not forget. That was not the place to do

:40:23. > :40:26.that! He just stays where he is. Still in ninth place. He's not seen

:40:27. > :40:33.quite as many improvements but Jenson Button is improving. He needs

:40:34. > :40:44.to. Valtteri Bottas on the full wets. Off the pace. He is on a

:40:45. > :40:48.better lap. I was looking to see Jenson Button on the track but he

:40:49. > :40:51.has quite a bit of traffic in front of him, Fernando Alonso, Rosberg,

:40:52. > :40:58.experienced drivers, they should not get in his way. Rosberg, in that

:40:59. > :41:05.spray, somewhere. We will see Jenson Button. Will this put him safer than

:41:06. > :41:09.he is? Because Romain Grosjean is in 11th place and we know he can

:41:10. > :41:15.deliver, even if the Lotus is struggling. Any improvement? Up to

:41:16. > :41:19.eighth place, relief for McLaren, ahead of his team-mate, currently.

:41:20. > :41:26.On-board with Valtteri Bottas. What can he do? Improving on his time

:41:27. > :41:32.that he has done so far but will that we enough to put him into the

:41:33. > :41:38.zone? Look at the amount of correction. Conditions are

:41:39. > :41:44.reasonably stable. They are calming down. They just have to try to find

:41:45. > :41:48.the line and give yourself the best opportunity to get some heat into

:41:49. > :41:53.the tyres. You are fighting against the cooling effect of the water. The

:41:54. > :41:57.chequered flag. Gutierrez is into 10th but he has seen the flag.

:41:58. > :42:02.Sebastian Vettel has gone quickest in the middle sector of anybody.

:42:03. > :42:07.What about Valtteri Bottas? Not looking likely, 12th place. Not

:42:08. > :42:11.enough for Valtteri Bottas. Felipe Massa has not seen the flag yet.

:42:12. > :42:23.Slightly better lap than his previous. Daniil Kvyat, incident

:42:24. > :42:28.pack. Just into the top ten. Still several cars out there. Sergio Perez

:42:29. > :42:36.could be one to watch. He is out. We know that Vergne loves these

:42:37. > :42:44.conditions. He has just done it! He displaces his team-mate. The

:42:45. > :42:49.graphics were slow to record that. He has been squeezed out by his more

:42:50. > :42:55.experienced team-mate. What can Felipe Massa do? Moves up to 13th

:42:56. > :42:58.place. But sadly, neither Williams makes it into the top ten and that

:42:59. > :43:07.will be disappointing after that promising performance, particularly

:43:08. > :43:12.in Australia. But Toro Rosso, there is a mixture of feelings because one

:43:13. > :43:16.car is in and one is out and Romain Grosjean has been pushed down to the

:43:17. > :43:20.bottom of the list. He has not seen the chequered flag. His middle

:43:21. > :43:25.sector is better but he might have made a mistake. The exit from turn

:43:26. > :43:36.12. He goes for a little spin. That big sideways moment. That is the end

:43:37. > :43:43.of any chance for Romain Grosjean to improve. At least Lotus have got one

:43:44. > :43:50.car. In the top ten, Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Rosberg, Daniel

:43:51. > :43:57.Ricciardo, Jean-Eric Vergne. We have lost one Toro Rosso, Daniil Kvyat. I

:43:58. > :44:03.think Esteban Gutierrez ended up in 12th place. But that is still

:44:04. > :44:16.laudable for Sauber. Perez in 14th place. Valtteri Bottas was 15th.

:44:17. > :44:26.Felipe Massa will not be the easiest to beat, even in the wet. Did you

:44:27. > :44:32.catch that? I think somebody held him up. I was talking over the

:44:33. > :44:38.beginning of that. Romain Grosjean is also out. What is happening on

:44:39. > :44:46.the replay? Valtteri Bottas in front. That is Daniel Ricciardo

:44:47. > :45:02.behind him. That looks fair. There was space. Absolutely. Taking the

:45:03. > :45:06.tighter line. There might be discussion about that but the net

:45:07. > :45:12.result is that we have lost Daniil Kvyat, Gutierrez, Valtteri Bottas

:45:13. > :45:16.and Romain Grosjean. I have upgraded my gentleman with the umbrella to

:45:17. > :45:22.the world champion, Mika Hakkinen. Thank you for joining us. Watching

:45:23. > :45:32.that session intently, it seems that patience is the order of the day?

:45:33. > :45:35.Yes, you can see that it is very difficult to drive here so we could

:45:36. > :45:39.see some situations with cars going off so I am not surprised. Let us

:45:40. > :45:50.look at Kevin Magnussen. There was this bit. Talk us through. That

:45:51. > :45:53.corner is definitely very complicated because the timing for

:45:54. > :45:57.the braking is very difficult. You can just see how much water is

:45:58. > :46:02.flying. Just that miscalculation of the braking. It naturally comes down

:46:03. > :46:12.to the inexperience. But luckily, he did a very good job to get out. What

:46:13. > :46:17.do you think of him as a driver? Calm and calculated? Definitely, he

:46:18. > :46:23.is a very good driver. I used to race against his dad. There is some

:46:24. > :46:27.good talent. Not the only moment that we have seen so far. Let us

:46:28. > :46:35.look at the incident that happened in Q1 with Marcus Ericsson. This is

:46:36. > :46:39.again very difficult, this corner, you go flat out and if you are still

:46:40. > :46:47.cornering and if you touch the white, you can see what happens.

:46:48. > :46:51.Again, I have to say that Formula One cars are just so fast and if you

:46:52. > :46:55.do not have full experience of handling in those situations, that

:46:56. > :46:58.was going to happen and they have to be running so much of the wet

:46:59. > :47:09.conditions so the drivers don't have much experience about that. He has

:47:10. > :47:15.been talking to us. Are you OK? I am fine, thank you. You were saying

:47:16. > :47:26.beforehand you had not driven a car in the wet. It was really slippery.

:47:27. > :47:33.I was trying to build my pace. How damaged is the car? It seems to be

:47:34. > :47:53.quite damaged. I am sure we will be fine tomorrow. We are just chatting

:47:54. > :47:56.about Ericssen. Tough times. If you get the chance, it you need to go

:47:57. > :48:00.for it. Conditions like that are very difficult. We should not be too

:48:01. > :48:07.critical. Lack of experience, that is what is going to happen. Talking

:48:08. > :48:10.of experience, we also saw an incident with Daniil Kvyat and

:48:11. > :48:19.Alonso. Can you speak about it from your point of view? It is difficult

:48:20. > :48:26.to calculate 100% sure. I do not think we should blame one driver. I

:48:27. > :48:32.think it is a combination of both drivers. They need to pay maximum

:48:33. > :48:36.attention. Would you say that Alonso was slightly ahead of Daniil Kvyat

:48:37. > :48:39.and the rule is you should always look for the car that is ahead so

:48:40. > :48:46.perhaps, Daniil Kvyat might get a minor telling off? It looks like he

:48:47. > :48:49.just went for the space. It would have been impossible to stop any

:48:50. > :48:53.more at that moment. Touching the inside kerb, what you lose in the

:48:54. > :49:01.front-end did not help him to stop at all.

:49:02. > :49:12.I am going to come and watch the next session so I will be

:49:13. > :49:24.well-informed. Q3 and a top shoot out. Kimi Raikkonen will lead the

:49:25. > :49:31.cars out onto the track. Who will come out on top? You have to say, it

:49:32. > :49:35.is highly likely that one or other of the two Mercedes will be on pole

:49:36. > :49:37.position. They seem to have so much pace around the race track in wet

:49:38. > :49:50.and dry conditions. They have cleaned the car. It was a

:49:51. > :49:53.good, instinctive reaction of a complete young racer to get on the

:49:54. > :50:02.power once he realised he would not hit anything solid. This is one of

:50:03. > :50:08.the early tracks. There is still a combination of part gravel, part

:50:09. > :50:14.tarmac. They had a bit of clearing up to do with the car of Kevin

:50:15. > :50:18.Magnusson. They have got it out but it is a damaged car. He has damaged

:50:19. > :50:23.his rear diffuser fences. That is the edge of the rear diffuser. That

:50:24. > :50:29.will affect the amount of downforce he has. It is sad for him. He was

:50:30. > :50:36.half a second up on Jenson Button before he had that. It is a shame

:50:37. > :50:44.the car will not be 100%. He may be able to deliver a result. That is

:50:45. > :50:48.part of the game. It is not 100% because he has been picked on in

:50:49. > :50:58.some way, it is because he has gone off in the one hour of qualifying

:50:59. > :51:03.sessions. You take the consequences. Details of what could have been. I

:51:04. > :51:07.could have been a contender. I have read every page of that book. It is

:51:08. > :51:12.all about delivering. He is young in his career and he is still out there

:51:13. > :51:15.in this session. Even if he is at the bottom end of the top ten, that

:51:16. > :51:19.still gives him an opportunity. I do not think he will. Certainly his

:51:20. > :51:25.performance has been quite impressive. TEAM RADIO: Is it still

:51:26. > :51:33.too wet for the intermediates? Yes, it is. McLaren have got it wrong

:51:34. > :51:38.again. Both cars did not make it through in 2010 because of that. It

:51:39. > :51:41.is not like McLaren to find themselves in this situation. I

:51:42. > :51:45.wonder if they are relying too much on what information is being driven

:51:46. > :51:51.to them rather than rely on what you can see in the pit lane. There is

:51:52. > :52:05.nothing like standing out from underneath a cover and confirming

:52:06. > :52:10.the level of rain. The driver can ultimately have the final say. You

:52:11. > :52:15.get wrapped up in so much trust in each other but sometimes you cannot

:52:16. > :52:19.see the rain for the water. Kimi Raikkonen has decided to go for the

:52:20. > :52:24.full wet tyres. You have some further information? We have seen

:52:25. > :52:30.Ferrari, Williams and McLaren or making this error of judgment. It is

:52:31. > :52:34.difficult to comprehend. The new wet tyre in 2014 is a softer compound

:52:35. > :52:37.and is much closer in lap time to the intermediate. There is no need

:52:38. > :52:49.to take the risk when the conditions are changeable. It looked to me like

:52:50. > :52:53.Jenson Button put the intermediate on. We have a team making contrary

:52:54. > :52:56.decisions on what to do with the tyres. Presumably they have given

:52:57. > :52:58.that choice to the drivers. Kevin said, it is too wet for

:52:59. > :53:04.intermediates. Maybe Jenson Button said, I want them. With eight and a

:53:05. > :53:07.half minutes of the session to go, you might well be making the

:53:08. > :53:11.decisions, I have to do something to get up the grid. He has not been

:53:12. > :53:15.happy generally with the overall grip of the car. He is in the top

:53:16. > :53:20.ten. If it works for him, he could be at the high end of the top ten

:53:21. > :53:30.and, if it doesn't, he is where he is expected to be anyway. A bit of a

:53:31. > :53:42.margin over Kimi Raikkonen of just over one second. That is under 30

:53:43. > :53:46.seconds in duration, that sector. Kimi Raikkonen is running a bit wide

:53:47. > :53:51.in the final turn. That has cost him extra time. This time he is about to

:53:52. > :53:55.be shattered by Mercedes. Not underneath the two-minute barrier.

:53:56. > :53:56.Both Hamilton and Rosberg are on circuit. Let's watch Hamilton down

:53:57. > :54:20.to the final turn. Sixth gear for him. He is just

:54:21. > :54:23.feeling the car for the brakes. Changing up below 12,000 rpm,

:54:24. > :54:27.hopefully we will get the graphic. 15,000 is the maximum available. No

:54:28. > :54:31.one is really running up to that. Hamilton with the edge. That was a

:54:32. > :54:35.good lap by him. I wonder how things will develop. The lap times are a

:54:36. > :54:36.bit slower than we saw earlier on. We were underneath the two-minute

:54:37. > :54:53.barrier before. Alonso splits the Mercedes. Now

:54:54. > :54:58.Sebastian Vettel goes quicker. Look at how close he was to the time of

:54:59. > :55:02.Hamilton. Remember with these hybrid systems, what they have to do is

:55:03. > :55:17.spend a lap or two to recharge the ball energy recovery system. --

:55:18. > :55:20.full. You cannot, necessarily, get two quick laps in succession. The

:55:21. > :55:28.storage capacity is four megajoules. The recoverable energy is two. If

:55:29. > :55:31.you deploy your full four on any given lap, providing the conditions

:55:32. > :55:36.are ideal, you can only recover half that. They are saying it could be

:55:37. > :55:40.intermediates or wet tyres at this particular point. There are six

:55:41. > :55:45.minutes to go. That will change in that time. There is still rain

:55:46. > :55:49.falling. How much it will change is difficult to say. Lewis Hamilton is

:55:50. > :56:04.fastest at this stage but not by very much. He has the advantage over

:56:05. > :56:07.the Red Bulll of Sebastian Vettel. So far Mercedes has dominated. Could

:56:08. > :56:11.there be a surprise? He has set a very rapid mid-sector time. Will it

:56:12. > :56:17.be enough for him? Water is being thrown up. The full wets are doing a

:56:18. > :56:25.lot of clearance. Is it a quick lap for him? No, it is not. 59.7, as

:56:26. > :56:32.opposed to 59.4. Let's see what Rosberg has just done. Maybe a

:56:33. > :56:35.mistake. He carries too much speed. He goes over the front tyre and

:56:36. > :56:42.understeer is wide. It looks like Sebastian Vettel is on a recovery

:56:43. > :56:46.lap and not pushing at all. Just watching Magnussen coming down

:56:47. > :56:49.towards the end of his lap. He is quicker in the first sector and the

:56:50. > :56:53.second sector and Jenson Button. Despite the damage to the rear

:56:54. > :57:02.diffuser of the car, I think he will have a slightly different lap. -- a

:57:03. > :57:07.slightly quicker lap. I will have to change tyres. Kimi Raikkonen knows

:57:08. > :57:10.he needs to coming quickly. A different tyre choice between the

:57:11. > :57:14.two cars. Jenson Button is on the intermediate and Magnusson is on the

:57:15. > :57:20.full wets. What has Sebastian Vettel gone for? He is on the full wets.

:57:21. > :57:25.Probably a new set to go but the sharp edges. Also you have the

:57:26. > :57:29.optimal tyre temperature and you can get a better track position. All of

:57:30. > :57:36.those benefits. He will be able to get a good time lap.

:57:37. > :57:42.Both the Red Bulls are out on the full wet tyres. That will be their

:57:43. > :57:46.choice now. I cannot see them going out and doing another lap and still

:57:47. > :57:51.change. Red Bull have decided to do their run on the full wets. That

:57:52. > :57:54.appears to be the tyre to have on this stage. Jenson Button is still

:57:55. > :58:07.on the intermediates. It is still raining. It is not drying. Jenson

:58:08. > :58:11.Button is between turn seven and eight. Around half of the lap. Kimi

:58:12. > :58:16.Raikkonen is coming in for the full wets. The tyres have gone and he has

:58:17. > :58:22.a fresh set. He had a bit of time deficit against his team-mate,

:58:23. > :58:26.Alonso. We will see whether he chooses the same or not. Right now,

:58:27. > :58:36.pretty much everyone is on the full wets, except Jenson Button. Everyone

:58:37. > :58:40.else has chosen the full wets but Jenson Button is still plugging away

:58:41. > :58:47.on the intermediates. Now for the final turn, he has improved. Where

:58:48. > :58:53.he went off earlier, he is fighting the steering. Jenson Button, coming

:58:54. > :58:58.onto the back straight, if he is to get a lap on full wets, he will need

:58:59. > :59:04.to come in. Does he come in? He stays out. He is committed to this.

:59:05. > :59:14.That was brave from Jenson Button. He crossed the line. What can Nico

:59:15. > :59:20.Hulkenberg do? A bit of improvement. A good lap from him. He is ahead of

:59:21. > :59:28.both the McLarens. He is in the Force India with the same Mercedes

:59:29. > :59:35.power unit. Tom, you are at Mercedes. You saw the pit stop. What

:59:36. > :59:38.did you see? They stacked both the cars up and did exquisite pit stops.

:59:39. > :59:45.Everything is working so well at that team. The cars, the pit stops,

:59:46. > :59:51.everything. Right now, the cars are split by two drivers. They are

:59:52. > :59:58.between the two Mercedes cars of Hamilton and Alonso. -- Rosberg.

:59:59. > :00:01.We're not seeing any green sector times. That implies the track is

:00:02. > :00:05.getting worse. With a 1.5 minutes to go, we're not seeing anyone putting

:00:06. > :00:09.up better sector times. We still have a bit of time to go. Rain is

:00:10. > :00:17.still falling. We can see how much spray is around. Standing water is

:00:18. > :00:20.the issue. Sebastian Vettel has positioned himself as the last car

:00:21. > :00:29.to make his way around and get across the line. As you say, no-one

:00:30. > :00:38.is going faster at this time. There is one more flying lap. A healthy

:00:39. > :00:42.gap to the cars in front. I am just not sure the track will deliver the

:00:43. > :01:02.lap times. Sebastian Vettel has. There is just enough grip, perhaps.

:01:03. > :01:06.I cannot see through his mirrors. Anyway, he does not have to worry

:01:07. > :01:14.about that. If you get caught for impeding a driver, you can get a

:01:15. > :01:18.penalty on the grid. You can see Alonso backing up as well as the

:01:19. > :01:27.position to come out of the last corner. Daniel Ricciardo is the man

:01:28. > :01:32.affected by that. I do not think Sebastian Vettel will make it across

:01:33. > :01:38.the line. The chequered flag comes out now. Sebastian Vettel has

:01:39. > :01:43.failed. That is so rare that they get that wrong. They have got it

:01:44. > :01:47.wrong on this occasion. Normally they are 100% in operational matters

:01:48. > :01:51.like that. He has seen the chequered flag, according to our timing screen

:01:52. > :01:57.and that means this lap will not count. That is interesting. I do not

:01:58. > :02:04.think he made it across the line in time. I think everyone should be on

:02:05. > :02:09.a lap to see if they can make any changes to the order as it stands.

:02:10. > :02:15.That will not challenge Hamilton, who is six tenths quicker in the

:02:16. > :02:23.first sector, historically. Kimi Raikkonen will not improve. He

:02:24. > :02:26.missed the last opportunity. I do not think this will be an

:02:27. > :02:29.improvement at all for Kimi Raikkonen. He will find himself

:02:30. > :02:37.further down than his team-mate, Alonso. Hamilton has gone off and

:02:38. > :02:41.continued at turn four. That looks like it is his time. Alonso not as

:02:42. > :02:54.quick as he needed to be to challenge Hamilton ahead. Rosberg, a

:02:55. > :02:58.good sector. First not as quick. He could be one to watch. He may still

:02:59. > :03:02.improve. You're watching Magnusson at the moment in the McLaren. He is

:03:03. > :03:05.currently eighth. The McLarens are on two different tyres. It looks as

:03:06. > :03:09.if Magnusson went for the correct tyre and Jenson Button chose the

:03:10. > :03:17.wrong one. That is a bit of a surprise. No change for Magnusson

:03:18. > :03:22.but he survives and looks to be starting in eighth place. Several

:03:23. > :03:34.other cars coming round to finish the lap, through the haze. Alonso

:03:35. > :03:38.stays there. -- third. Rosberg is the only one... Yes, he goes up to

:03:39. > :03:43.third, he displaces Fernando Alonso. Rosberg, the only one able to make

:03:44. > :03:45.any improvement. First and third for Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton has

:03:46. > :03:50.taken pole position for the Malaysian Grand Prix. And that means

:03:51. > :03:58.back-to-back pole positions this year, 100% in qualifying. His 33rd

:03:59. > :04:01.career pole position and he matches the long-standing British record of

:04:02. > :04:11.Jim Clark, with 33 pole positions. That has stood since 1968. And it

:04:12. > :04:16.has been matched by Lewis Hamilton. His second here in Malaysia, he did

:04:17. > :04:21.it in 2012 but is yet to win the race. What an absolutely brilliant

:04:22. > :04:27.performance from him in difficult conditions. Sebastian Vettel has

:04:28. > :04:36.qualified in second place and was only a fraction of a second slower

:04:37. > :04:39.than Hamilton. The four-times world champion and three times winner in

:04:40. > :04:45.Malaysia has shown that, given changeable conditions, Red Bull can

:04:46. > :04:51.be right there. Daniel Ricciardo started in second in Australia and

:04:52. > :04:56.finished in second place. That could be a very big boost to the team. He

:04:57. > :05:00.congratulates Hamilton. Mercedes will be very satisfied with first

:05:01. > :05:11.and third but Jenson Button will be ruing that choice of tyre. 10th and

:05:12. > :05:13.last place of that session. His team-mate chose the full wets and he

:05:14. > :05:40.is in eighth place. Then Daniel Ricciardo, Kimi

:05:41. > :05:43.Raikkonen, not so strong today. Hulkenberg, another superb effort,

:05:44. > :05:45.beating both McLarens. Daniil Kvyat, just outside the top ten. Further

:05:46. > :05:48.down, Romain Grosjean, starting ahead of Pastor Maldonado. There

:05:49. > :05:55.might be penalties applied for other issues. We saw that incident between

:05:56. > :06:00.Fernando Alonso and Daniil Kvyat and the incident between Valtteri Bottas

:06:01. > :06:08.and Daniel Ricciardo. There could be changes to that. But this is how

:06:09. > :06:11.they qualified. Lewis Hamilton on pole position and Nico Rosberg,

:06:12. > :06:15.always matching him until the very last session. And ending up in third

:06:16. > :07:00.position. Here are the results. Not making it through to Q3... And

:07:01. > :07:06.out after Q1. Letters hear from the drivers. Another stunning pole

:07:07. > :07:14.position and a wonderful record to match? Yes, crazy. Many mentioned

:07:15. > :07:21.that I could not believe it. I never would have dreams of having the

:07:22. > :07:27.amount of poles that I have had. I wish I could convert them into wins.

:07:28. > :07:34.I have some catching up to do. But I am very proud and I said, it was

:07:35. > :07:39.just because I had a great group of people that enables me to do those

:07:40. > :07:49.things. Not only my family but my team and my management, they all add

:07:50. > :07:55.to the good ingredients. Some cars suit wet or dry but you have a nice

:07:56. > :08:02.transition between both? We don't lose time, everyone else gains

:08:03. > :08:07.time, maybe. In the wet, for Sebastian Vettel to be that close is

:08:08. > :08:16.surprising. But yes, it was so close. Yes, too many pole

:08:17. > :08:20.positions. Second place, fantastic turnaround but there is that gap,

:08:21. > :08:28.was that more frustrating because it was so close? It was close, to

:08:29. > :08:33.close. Very tricky, especially in Q3 with lots of water. Some places on

:08:34. > :08:39.the track looked like intermediate but then there were rivers and other

:08:40. > :08:45.places. Yes, only after the first lap there was more to gain. -- I

:08:46. > :08:51.knew. I could not finish the second lap. Yes, I was pushing too hard, I

:08:52. > :09:00.was up and I was a little bit we find. Paul was there, Lewis Hamilton

:09:01. > :09:11.did the better job. The better first lap. All in all, we can be very

:09:12. > :09:19.happy. It was a very tough winter but strong comeback. Third place,

:09:20. > :09:28.the only driver to improve on that final lap. How do you feel? I am

:09:29. > :09:32.pleased, third place is OK. It is not pole position but a great place

:09:33. > :09:36.to start. There will be a lot of things going on. I will make the

:09:37. > :09:41.most of it. With changeable conditions, Mercedes looks

:09:42. > :09:47.comfortable, but is a specific dry or wet you would like? Any

:09:48. > :09:53.condition, the car is quick and I feel comfortable. Whatever.

:09:54. > :10:02.Disappointed at the choice of intermediates? No, when you are

:10:03. > :10:07.going to be eighth place, it is worth a punt. So, yes. It is what it

:10:08. > :10:11.is. I felt the circuit, I did not think it was going to rain again. It

:10:12. > :10:22.was worth a go. Pretty wet at the back. Whose choice was it? You or

:10:23. > :10:29.the team? I chose it. I did not get it right today. But it was worth a

:10:30. > :10:36.go. When we are fighting at the back of the top ten, you give it a go.

:10:37. > :10:43.Good shape for tomorrow? I don't know! Nobody knows that, the only

:10:44. > :10:47.people who know are Mercedes. He sounds quite thoughtful but in that

:10:48. > :10:50.situation, was it worth a shot? Absolutely, he is not challenging

:10:51. > :10:53.for pole position in normal conditions so you have to do

:10:54. > :10:57.something different and you make the call and you come in and you go back

:10:58. > :11:06.on the track and in this case, the rain did not stop and if it had, it

:11:07. > :11:10.would be a better decision. So what I take out of the information coming

:11:11. > :11:13.from Jenson Button is disappointment that the car clearly is one step

:11:14. > :11:25.forward over last year but still short of Mercedes. And that is a

:11:26. > :11:28.huge challenge to make up that gap. It is not just about individual

:11:29. > :11:34.sessions or winning, it is about the Championship. He wants more. And it

:11:35. > :11:38.is looking like a long shot for this car to be a Championship car. And

:11:39. > :11:47.Lewis Hamilton, he really led the way throughout those sessions and he

:11:48. > :11:51.had it right. It was about the tyres and timing? Nico Rosberg, out of the

:11:52. > :11:54.traps in the first part and he looked slightly more comfortable but

:11:55. > :11:58.Lewis Hamilton. As Ben said, it is normally that he saves the big lap

:11:59. > :12:04.for when it counts and he will be very satisfied with what was a very

:12:05. > :12:14.difficult session. Especially for the younger drivers. Terrible

:12:15. > :12:19.conditions but interesting. Sebastian Vettel? It proves the

:12:20. > :12:22.point that they have a good car, and as we said, the wet weather

:12:23. > :12:26.neutralises the lines on the power and if you have a car that generates

:12:27. > :12:30.downforce, that means the driver has confidence and can exploit that and

:12:31. > :12:33.it is not just about the times on the laps, they have analysis that

:12:34. > :12:37.proves where the car delivers its lap time so later in the season we

:12:38. > :12:45.will look at that in more depth and show the viewers exactly how the

:12:46. > :12:49.team builds confidence. It was all about patients today. Thank you for

:12:50. > :12:52.being patient. We will be back tomorrow morning a little bit later

:12:53. > :12:56.than this morning, at 8am, live on BBC One. Fingers crossed we don't

:12:57. > :13:00.have the same situation as today but Lewis Hamilton is on pole position

:13:01. > :13:02.and it was a completely wet and wild session here, some interesting stuff

:13:03. > :13:11.and some amazing tenacity from all of the drivers. Thank you very much

:13:12. > :13:15.for watching. We will see you at 8am in the morning, put those brollies

:13:16. > :13:22.away and pray for the sunshine! Goodbye!
