:01:03. > :01:10.Hello and welcome to the Circuit de Catalunya. Practice is getting under

:01:11. > :01:14.way. If you watched this morning, you will know Nico Rosberg only

:01:15. > :01:18.managed nine laps and Sebastian Vettel had an electrical failure and

:01:19. > :01:23.only managed four laps. It gets worse. He won't be taking part in

:01:24. > :01:29.this session at all. Red Bull are changing the wiring loom, or will be

:01:30. > :01:33.changing it on that car. They described the failure as a

:01:34. > :01:39.catastrophic one. So a testing afternoon for Sebastian Vettel, who

:01:40. > :01:45.has been reduced to a spectator. In the pit lane we will be updating you

:01:46. > :01:55.with all the news. Now let's leave you with the commentary team. A

:01:56. > :02:01.beautiful sunny day. The air temperature 23 degrees. We have 90

:02:02. > :02:06.minutes of Formula One action ahead for the Grand Prix on Sunday. And

:02:07. > :02:10.before that roughly half an hour in, we will see some qualifying

:02:11. > :02:16.simulation runs as well. That will give us an indication of how quick

:02:17. > :02:20.the relative cars are and Alan, this is an interesting time, we get

:02:21. > :02:27.updates on the cars, we were hearing about that, who has brought what on

:02:28. > :02:30.to the cars, a lot of development work in the wind tunnels has gone

:02:31. > :02:36.on, but this year, because there is so much going on with the new power

:02:37. > :02:39.units, the chance of bigger steps than normal being made by individual

:02:40. > :02:47.teams is there and you could see some changes in the pecking order? I

:02:48. > :02:56.think generally the most performance gapes are coming out of power units

:02:57. > :03:00.as opposed to the aerodynamics and the chassis. Some people got it more

:03:01. > :03:04.right than others. Some got it plain wrong and they're trying to recover.

:03:05. > :03:10.Right now, there are a lot of changes, but it is all subtle stuff.

:03:11. > :03:17.There is no major point where you can see a new front wing or rear

:03:18. > :03:21.wing. Ferrari were doing a lot of back-to-backing

:03:22. > :03:25.wing. Ferrari were doing a lot of Raikkonen. They have something that

:03:26. > :03:29.produces more down force, but also more drag. They are trying to

:03:30. > :03:33.balance that out. This afternoon is trying to make sure they have the

:03:34. > :03:37.pace in the car and the long run pace, because as we saw last year,

:03:38. > :03:41.this place is tough on tyres and you need to be able to manage that

:03:42. > :03:52.through the course of a long afternoon on Sunday. Marcus Ericsson

:03:53. > :04:01.goes through. Pole here last year was 1. 20 set by Nico Rosberg.

:04:02. > :04:03.Mercedes were quick here last year. There was an indication that

:04:04. > :04:06.Mercedes were on the march when There was an indication that

:04:07. > :04:10.came here, but they had problems with chewing up the tyres. Lewis

:04:11. > :04:14.Hamilton this morning on the radio saying he was struggling a bit with

:04:15. > :04:22.tyre wear. So we will have to keep an eye on that. Kobayashi has a

:04:23. > :04:27.lurid moment. I have never seen that. They came off the last lap and

:04:28. > :04:32.went on to the power. We have an engine problem and we need to come

:04:33. > :04:37.in slow. No full throttle. Engine power, there is a problem, he needs

:04:38. > :04:45.to come in. Max Chilton in the Marussia has an issue. I have never

:04:46. > :04:48.seen a car step United so aggressively -- step out so

:04:49. > :04:57.aggressively and cause the driver to cut on to the grass. The Marussia is

:04:58. > :05:01.into the pit lane and down there is Jenny Gou. In the foreground you can

:05:02. > :05:06.make out Sebastian Vettel's car. You can can see it is almost like its

:05:07. > :05:09.guts are spilling out on the side. That is the wiring loom that has

:05:10. > :05:14.caused the problem. They said they have had a catastrophic electrical

:05:15. > :05:18.fault. They had no pre-warning that would happen. Sebastian Vettel

:05:19. > :05:24.switched the car off and then the car had to be pushed wack. -- back.

:05:25. > :05:28.The wiring loom is the first thing that gets laid down when they start

:05:29. > :05:32.building it up. So when they take it apart, it is the last thing they get

:05:33. > :05:36.to. It will take all of the session to repair that. Sebastian Vettel

:05:37. > :05:41.won't go out. He has been reduced to a spectator and it does sound like

:05:42. > :05:46.he may go out on to the circuit and have a look at the other cars and

:05:47. > :05:51.soak up some detail. That is an opportunity a driver rarely gets. He

:05:52. > :05:57.will be out of the session. Nico Rosberg also had problems today. He

:05:58. > :06:08.only managed nine laps. A problem with his cooling system. We will

:06:09. > :06:11.look into the Mercedes garage in a moment. Jenson Button is now on

:06:12. > :06:16.circuit in the McLaren. Daniel Ricciardo was third quickest this

:06:17. > :06:19.morning, with Fernando Alonso fourth and Nico Rosberg fifth and Kimi

:06:20. > :06:24.Raikkonen sixth. I was speaking to one of photographers who has an eye

:06:25. > :06:29.for a car and a driver and he was saying that Raikkonen was seriously

:06:30. > :06:34.overdriving the Ferrari and it was a real handful and he was pushing to

:06:35. > :06:38.try and squeeze the lap time out of it. But it looked an

:06:39. > :06:40.try and squeeze the lap time out of experience. Yes around here the

:06:41. > :06:40.try and squeeze the lap time out of isn't nicely balanced and if you

:06:41. > :06:49.don't have a isn't nicely balanced and if you

:06:50. > :06:55.fast entries. If you go in too much on the brakes the rear can be less

:06:56. > :07:01.stable. You have got to have a nice feel for it and a rhythm with this

:07:02. > :07:04.track F you don't, it can be a pretty exciting experience and not

:07:05. > :07:10.necessarily the best one. Jenson Button had the rhythm with it this

:07:11. > :07:18.morning, I am not sure if this afternoon it will herald the pace he

:07:19. > :07:28.had this morning. Button crosses the start/finish line at 195mph he heads

:07:29. > :07:33.to turn one. Esteban Gutierrez also having a slide. These hard tyres

:07:34. > :07:37.taking some time to come up to temperature. That is the second time

:07:38. > :07:43.we have seen, we had Kobayashi having a big rear end slide. And

:07:44. > :07:47.Pastor Maldonado into that long turn at three. He too is having the same

:07:48. > :07:53.problem. Remember, last year there was a heck of a lot more down force

:07:54. > :07:56.on the cars and that corner in qualifying was trim.

:07:57. > :07:59.on the cars and that corner in in the race. They're getting to the

:08:00. > :08:04.mid point of the corner where it starts to rise and the wind affects

:08:05. > :08:09.the car and they're all getting an oversteer moment and having to steer

:08:10. > :08:13.out of it and use the run off area to correct it. It will cause some

:08:14. > :08:21.dramas this afternoon. I think we will see a lot or of oversphere and

:08:22. > :08:25.dramas this afternoon. I think we slidy moments. It has everything

:08:26. > :08:27.this course. It is got a big long straight as well. So it will throw

:08:28. > :08:33.up a straight as well. So it will throw

:08:34. > :08:38.the driver to get the best balance. Eight and a half minutes.

:08:39. > :08:40.Magnussen has set the fastest time, but that has been beaten

:08:41. > :08:54.Magnussen has set the fastest time, Button. -- beaten by Jenson Button.

:08:55. > :08:59.Only 11 cars so far have gone out and set a time. No sign of Mercedes

:09:00. > :09:04.cars yet. Sebastian Vettel will not take any part in this free practice

:09:05. > :09:12.session after having a problem with if wiring loom on the replacement

:09:13. > :09:21.chassis that he is using here. It is not a brand-new chassis for him. I

:09:22. > :09:25.mentioned that there was a hair-raising moment by their

:09:26. > :09:32.test-driver. He is talking to Tom. He had a brake failure at 200mph.

:09:33. > :09:39.You're looking relaxed now. How was that moment? It was quite tough. If

:09:40. > :09:45.you come 320 clicks towards turn one and you brake and nothing happens,

:09:46. > :09:50.it was a bit scary. But I saved the car and in the end nothing happened.

:09:51. > :09:54.Of course I had some flat spots for the last run and it was not ideal. I

:09:55. > :10:01.think this morning the first run, the second one, we had some problem

:10:02. > :10:06.with the brakes. It is tough on the brakes. I was looking here and there

:10:07. > :10:11.and then suddenly the brake failure. Talk us to about the performance of

:10:12. > :10:15.the car. It is a big weekend for Sauber. You have reduce #2d weight

:10:16. > :10:20.-- reduced the weight of the car. Does it feel any different to when

:10:21. > :10:24.you drove it in China? It feels in some parts good. It was the hard

:10:25. > :10:29.compound tyre, which I never drove on, so it is hard to compare. The

:10:30. > :10:33.issue I had, it is hard to see where the car is and what the problem is

:10:34. > :10:40.and where the good points are. The last one I did. Even with the other

:10:41. > :10:45.tyres, it was good and the car felt competitive. They still have to tune

:10:46. > :10:51.it, because everything is stim new. -- still new. Lap times were not

:10:52. > :10:58.very fast, are we going to see the track ramping up this afternoon?

:10:59. > :11:01.Yes, for sure, the hard tyre here is very hard. Some people can make it

:11:02. > :11:08.work. Of course this afternoon we will see the option. The medium tyre

:11:09. > :11:11.and I guess the times will be quicker during the day. It is

:11:12. > :11:18.getting hotter. There will be more rubber on track. Hopefully you can

:11:19. > :11:25.start challenging, thanks for you time. He was of course the test and

:11:26. > :11:33.development driver for Sauber. Daniel Ricciardo is on a quick line.

:11:34. > :11:38.-- quick lap. The Red Bull driver on great form after some strong races

:11:39. > :11:42.where, the team has had to ask him to, has had to ask his team mate to

:11:43. > :11:47.move out of the way to let Daniel Ricciardo through and it is partly

:11:48. > :11:52.in response to that that Red Bull have brought a different chassis for

:11:53. > :11:55.Sebastian Vettel. Lewis Hamilton goes quickest. Then it is Daniel

:11:56. > :12:13.Ricciardo. Tom was asking about the track

:12:14. > :12:21.improvement and Toto Wolf talked about track evolution. Talk to us

:12:22. > :12:25.about how that feels from a driver's point of view. This morning when the

:12:26. > :12:29.cars came out into the pit lane, there was dust every where. It was

:12:30. > :12:34.like being in the desert. It has been windy and it is quite sandy

:12:35. > :12:37.around and about. That lies on the track and then sort of the circuit

:12:38. > :12:43.first has to get cleaned and then it has to put the Pirelli rubber on to

:12:44. > :12:48.the tarmac and then you have rubber on rubber, instead of at the moment

:12:49. > :12:54.rubber against tarmac. Once you get that rubber on rubber, the car hooks

:12:55. > :12:57.up, the tyres feel better, they last longer and you can attack the corner

:12:58. > :13:02.better and get on the power earlier. If you get off it, like they do in

:13:03. > :13:08.turn three, if they get off that line, you lose a heck of lot of grip

:13:09. > :13:16.and slide wide. As a driver you prefer it when the track rubbers in

:13:17. > :13:24.and it will get quicker. Rosberg is out on circuit and touring around

:13:25. > :13:29.slowly. He is on a slow lap. He has been getting that car back in after

:13:30. > :13:38.problems with the energy recovery system. You see the orange side tyre

:13:39. > :13:42.on the tyre of Bottas. They're using the harder compound, because when

:13:43. > :13:46.the circuit is green, you will burn up that softer one and with the

:13:47. > :13:54.softer tyre you can put on later. But also later on in the race when

:13:55. > :13:59.it is rubbered up. Bottas has another big side waz moment -- side

:14:00. > :14:03.it is rubbered up. Bottas has ways moment. He is only going 55mph.

:14:04. > :14:07.But it is enough to lift the car off the ground. Remember, last year we

:14:08. > :14:14.had medium and hard compound Pirelli tyres. But they were the high

:14:15. > :14:19.degradation variety and they endeded up getting changed after the dramas

:14:20. > :14:22.after Silverstone. This time last year, Fernando Alonso won with

:14:23. > :14:26.after Silverstone. This time last stops. Not expecting to see that on

:14:27. > :14:32.Sunday. Again the back end of Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes is stepping out.

:14:33. > :14:35.This car is quite a handful to drive. Even the best car in the

:14:36. > :14:41.field looks difficult at the rear end. He is trying to put a lot of

:14:42. > :14:45.power down. The tyre's taking a lot of load. Now it is pure

:14:46. > :14:49.acceleration, but the tyre is building that energy and at one

:14:50. > :14:54.point it will give up and say no more. You get these oversteers is.

:14:55. > :14:59.The thing from the driver's point of view he has to feel that and mod

:15:00. > :15:03.late it before it happens. Once you're oversteering, you have lost

:15:04. > :15:15.performance before you get to that point. It is being at 99% before you

:15:16. > :15:19.start oversteering. Hamilton improves, the lap times coming down

:15:20. > :15:25.all the time, everyone running the harder of the two tyre compounds.

:15:26. > :15:31.Ricciardo second, Button third. Rosberg pops into second place,

:15:32. > :15:35.Mercedes one and two, Ricciardo into third place. What kind of feedback

:15:36. > :15:40.are you getting from drivers in the paddock about these cars? They have

:15:41. > :15:44.had a chance to test them, race them four times, they are getting used to

:15:45. > :15:49.them now. What are they saying to you? If you go to one end of the

:15:50. > :15:53.grid or the other, you get completely different feedback. If

:15:54. > :15:57.you are in a car at the front, you are pretty accenting of where it is.

:15:58. > :16:03.At the back, it is a struggle, like anything else. Right now, they have

:16:04. > :16:07.got used to the torque, they are not speaking about that as much as at

:16:08. > :16:18.the beginning of the season - they are starting to understand systems,

:16:19. > :16:28.the beginning of the season - they drives the driver's feel.

:16:29. > :16:33.the beginning of the season - they morning during FB one, quite unusual

:16:34. > :16:41.for him, he tends to turn up on Saturdays, but he is here to help,

:16:42. > :16:42.as he put it, Matteo Mattiacci, who was running Ferrari in North

:16:43. > :16:48.America, with record sales, was running Ferrari in North

:16:49. > :16:52.good as a manager within that retail side of the road car business. But

:16:53. > :16:59.he doesn't know anything at all about Formula One, so he is here to

:17:00. > :17:01.give them a helping hand. We watch Ricciardo made his way around the

:17:02. > :17:07.middle part Ricciardo made his way around the

:17:08. > :17:10.always see lots of work on the steering wheel. That is where the

:17:11. > :17:14.wind can catch you out, several points around the circuit, that is

:17:15. > :17:16.one of them, and now he's heading towards another at the top where a

:17:17. > :17:21.sudden gust can unsettle these cars. towards another at the top where a

:17:22. > :17:24.It certainly can, and what is quite impressive, watching Ricciardo, as

:17:25. > :17:28.soon as he gets to the middle of the corner and goes on the power, the

:17:29. > :17:33.steering straightens, he does not sit into long understeer, which is

:17:34. > :17:37.predominant around this circuit. They have got a pretty sharp front

:17:38. > :17:41.end on that particular car. But that could be the detriment of the rear,

:17:42. > :17:50.they have to be careful to keep that balance. Right now, they seem to

:17:51. > :17:53.have a pretty good chassis. We have got Valtteri Bottas down in 13th

:17:54. > :17:59.place for Williams. His team-mate, Felipe Massa, has just gone out on

:18:00. > :18:04.the circuit. Tom Clarkson has some Williams news. I am in front of

:18:05. > :18:10.Valtteri Bottas' car, shout if he is about to come out! If he is going to

:18:11. > :18:15.run me down .Mac because you will not hear it! Good news for Williams

:18:16. > :18:21.fans, they are confident they can challenge for the podium. The reason

:18:22. > :18:25.for that is that they have come with some aerodynamic tweaks that are

:18:26. > :18:29.really making a difference. They found that during

:18:30. > :18:33.really making a difference. They session. The most noticeable, if you

:18:34. > :18:36.can look at the sidepods, they are much tighter. They

:18:37. > :18:43.can look at the sidepods, they are side of the sidepods. At the last

:18:44. > :18:47.race, there was so much room. Now they have found a way of cooling the

:18:48. > :18:50.engine which allows them to sculpt the sidepods to the engine much

:18:51. > :18:55.better, giving them better performance. There is also a tweak

:18:56. > :18:58.to the front wing and the floor, so they are seeing much better

:18:59. > :19:02.performance. Valtteri Bottas is one of only four drivers to have

:19:03. > :19:06.finished get the points in every race, every chance he will do it

:19:07. > :19:10.again this weekend. Tell us why you are wearing that string vest with

:19:11. > :19:14.all the writing on it, why have you got to wear that? I think it is very

:19:15. > :19:19.fetching! If I don't, I get thrown out of the pit lane, it is the same

:19:20. > :19:28.with Jenny. New regulations that came in after the Nuerburgrings,

:19:29. > :19:32.when Mark Webber's rear tyre hit one of the FOM cameramen. As a result,

:19:33. > :19:36.they have now limited the numbers that are allowed in the pit lane. I

:19:37. > :19:46.am only allowed in with this, this is gold dust! Hamilton fastest,

:19:47. > :19:50.Rosberg second, 1:27.61 is the benchmark time as we approach 20

:19:51. > :19:58.minutes in FP2. Ricciardo was third, Alonso, Raikkonen, Button,

:19:59. > :20:03.Magnussen. You can get in touch with us using the hashtag #bbcf1 or leave

:20:04. > :20:09.a message on the BBC Sport Facebook page. Richard asks, what a Vettel

:20:10. > :20:14.doesn't set a time in qualifying? Will he be able to race on Sunday?

:20:15. > :20:19.Basically, the chances are that are pretty small in reality. He will be

:20:20. > :20:22.out at some point, but it is part of the regulation that if you are not

:20:23. > :20:27.able to set a representative time in qualifying, then you go to the

:20:28. > :20:31.stewards, and they deem whether you have been able to do that before. In

:20:32. > :20:36.this situation, as Richard suggested, that would not be the

:20:37. > :20:40.case. The other side of it, you would suggest that Sebastian Vettel

:20:41. > :20:46.should be on the grid and start from the back. That was put in place, the

:20:47. > :20:50.stewards have a judgment for safety, someone who was not up to speed, and

:20:51. > :20:55.it has been looked at in the past. There have been teams and drivers

:20:56. > :21:00.who have not made it June to the 107% rule, but it is extremely

:21:01. > :21:09.unlikely. -- due to. Extends to for rookie drivers in backmarker cars.

:21:10. > :21:15.-- it tends. We are talking about a four-time world champion. Which

:21:16. > :21:21.corners? Slightly earlier apex in turn one for speed in turn two, the

:21:22. > :21:26.biggest difference is turn two. Rosberg asking what corners he needs

:21:27. > :21:32.to work on. Obviously getting a fairly clear picture, three tenths

:21:33. > :21:35.of a second down on team-mate Lewis Hamilton at the moment. More

:21:36. > :21:40.questions that you have sent us to hashtag #bbcf1, downwards, you think

:21:41. > :21:53.the lower teams will close the gap in this Grand Prix? -- Daniil Woods.

:21:54. > :22:01.Sorry, I did not hear you. But everyone is moving, even the teams

:22:02. > :22:05.at the front are all moving. Mercedes have 2.5 seconds, and they

:22:06. > :22:09.have brought upgrades. They have got a lot of time in a pocket at this

:22:10. > :22:14.particular circuit, it does to the Ferrari and the Red Bull

:22:15. > :22:18.characteristics, better than China or Bahrain, clearly. But those

:22:19. > :22:23.tracks, they had plenty of time in their pockets, they were cruising.

:22:24. > :22:27.But they are even moving forward. I would not say there will be a big

:22:28. > :22:30.shift in the order. The area I am interested in is the middle of the

:22:31. > :22:36.grid, the fight between McLaren, Jenson Button there, whether they

:22:37. > :22:41.can move forward. And also probably the standout team for me so far this

:22:42. > :22:45.season, apart from Mercedes and their speed, is Force India, and

:22:46. > :22:48.whether they will be able to maintain their fantastic start to

:22:49. > :22:51.the year. Williams is another one that we have already heard about,

:22:52. > :22:59.they have brought aero upgrades, a new wing... We still have an engine

:23:00. > :23:03.problem, no full throttle, you need to come in now. Max Chilton still

:23:04. > :23:10.having an engine problem, called back into the pits by his team. He

:23:11. > :23:15.has not managed to complete a lap so far in almost 25 minutes of running,

:23:16. > :23:19.so a frustrating time for Max Chilton. I guess he will be pleased

:23:20. > :23:24.at the reliability is used affecting him in practice sessions, because he

:23:25. > :23:28.is on an amazing run of race results. He has finished 23

:23:29. > :23:37.consecutive Grands Prix, every race he has entered. And that is quite

:23:38. > :23:40.something! Two 13th places already, some progress there, obviously

:23:41. > :23:45.finishing races is not his only goal, he wants to finish

:23:46. > :23:47.competitively, but to get a result you must finish. The other thing

:23:48. > :23:51.that is very important is that you must finish. The other thing

:23:52. > :23:57.building up milage in the car. If you are very fast but you go off

:23:58. > :24:00.after ten laps, you don't build up that mental knowledge of the car and

:24:01. > :24:03.Grand Prix racing and all of the circuits, but he has got that in

:24:04. > :24:08.abundance. That is something that will help him through the second

:24:09. > :24:12.part of this particular season. But now on board with Pastor Maldonado,

:24:13. > :24:15.the first of the runners, as he comes into the last section of the

:24:16. > :24:21.track, to go on to the medium compound tyre. Ericsson is doing the

:24:22. > :24:33.same thing further back down the grid. Maldonado will give us an

:24:34. > :24:36.indication, 1:27.25 on the harder compound. They do tend to take some

:24:37. > :24:41.fuel out when they go for the qualifications in relation, and I

:24:42. > :24:47.think Maldonado is on an out-lap, buying himself some space to the car

:24:48. > :24:51.in front. He is fourth, in fact, he has already made that jump. Eight

:24:52. > :24:57.tenths of a second off Hamilton, but he is using the harder compound, as

:24:58. > :25:04.is Rosberg and Ricciardo in front. Max, we will be in now, in now. Max

:25:05. > :25:09.Chilton's problems continue. We will get a sense of how much of a gain

:25:10. > :25:14.the medium tyre gives you over the harder tyre as the drivers go

:25:15. > :25:20.through their qualifying stimulations runs. Not too many cars

:25:21. > :25:25.on circuit at the moment, we are in that changeover period between the

:25:26. > :25:28.initial runs on the harder tyre and going out for quali simulator is.

:25:29. > :25:35.Typically, they will go out and do a long run on that set of medium size

:25:36. > :25:40.they used for the simulation, and that will replicate the opening part

:25:41. > :25:45.of the Grand Prix. -- medium tyres. Then often they will move one of the

:25:46. > :25:50.drivers onto the harder tyre at the same time to compare performance. I

:25:51. > :25:54.am standing in front of Jenson Button's car, and until about five

:25:55. > :25:58.seconds ago I was looking at a wall of mechanics, they were trying to

:25:59. > :26:02.stop us from watching what they were doing. They were altering the amount

:26:03. > :26:06.of ballast that Jenson is carrying in his front wing. If you look

:26:07. > :26:12.underneath the droopy nose bit of the car, there are several little

:26:13. > :26:18.compartments about the size of a 50 BP is which contain ballast. -- 50p

:26:19. > :26:22.piece. It is very difficult to see what they were doing, but that is

:26:23. > :26:26.why Jenson Button is out of the car. They have just finished this, so we

:26:27. > :26:30.can expect to see him back on track quite shortly. A quick update about

:26:31. > :26:35.this morning, Jenson was second fastest, team-mate Kevin Magnussen

:26:36. > :26:40.was seventh, and my spies tell me they were not running light, which

:26:41. > :26:42.suggests it might have been a representative

:26:43. > :26:46.suggests it might have been a particular. OK, thank you very much

:26:47. > :26:51.for that, approaching the half hour mark in this 90 minute FP2 session.

:26:52. > :26:58.Hamilton from Rosberg from Ricciardo, I am delighted to say

:26:59. > :27:01.that Red Bull team principal Christian Horner joins us now, as he

:27:02. > :27:04.did earlier this morning, Sebastian Vettel taking no part in this

:27:05. > :27:11.session, very frustrating, I imagine. Yeah, no, very frustrating

:27:12. > :27:15.for Seb and the team, a lost opportunity to gather some more

:27:16. > :27:18.data, but better to get the problem or belief it and take the time to

:27:19. > :27:23.get to the root cause and fully address, rather than taking risks

:27:24. > :27:29.tomorrow. An obvious question, can you rule out the chassis change in

:27:30. > :27:34.any way being related to the wiring problems? Yeah, no, absolutely. The

:27:35. > :27:38.wiring comes in and out all the time, it is nothing specific to a

:27:39. > :27:42.chassis change. It is, unfortunately, an issue that has

:27:43. > :27:46.happened that would have happened with either car. So what have you

:27:47. > :27:50.managed to derive from Daniel Ricciardo? He has done quite a bit

:27:51. > :27:56.of running this morning and now, currently in third place, what are

:27:57. > :28:00.you learning? Obviously, we are working through a programme,

:28:01. > :28:04.focusing on the different tyre compounds, and we have got a few

:28:05. > :28:09.upgrades here to have a look at and analyse the data from. Obviously we

:28:10. > :28:16.want to tune the car into the circuit, so far it looks reasonably

:28:17. > :28:19.respectable. It is only you, me, Allan McNish and our closest friends

:28:20. > :28:21.on BBC Two, perhaps you would like to share what the upgrades are!

:28:22. > :28:25.Probably not! The usual stuff, to share what the upgrades are!

:28:26. > :28:28.bits of aero, bodywork, to share what the upgrades are!

:28:29. > :28:34.mechanical bits, the most important thing is we are trying to make

:28:35. > :28:37.progress with the power unit. Some of the software upgrades that are

:28:38. > :28:43.being introduced. of the software upgrades that are

:28:44. > :28:46.talking about the software and things for the integration with the

:28:47. > :28:52.engine and the hybrid system, where are you relative to 100% efficiency

:28:53. > :28:57.from the hybrids? I think we have still got a little way to go,

:28:58. > :29:00.because it is still quite crude. The integration of the three elements,

:29:01. > :29:04.because it is still quite crude. The the combustion engine, the Turbo and

:29:05. > :29:07.then the energy recovery system. It is getting all those elements in

:29:08. > :29:11.tune together, not just under power but under braking, when it is

:29:12. > :29:15.harvesting, without an settling the balance of the car. That

:29:16. > :29:18.harvesting, without an settling the doing quite a lot of work. I

:29:19. > :29:18.harvesting, without an settling the not had a chance to really analyse

:29:19. > :29:22.what not had a chance to really analyse

:29:23. > :29:25.Ricciardo is doing, but Jean-Eric Vergne is in the top six, in terms

:29:26. > :29:31.of maximum Vergne is in the top six, in terms

:29:32. > :29:32.top three, then Jean-Eric Vergne, obviously using the same Renault

:29:33. > :29:34.power unit. Do we take it obviously using the same Renault

:29:35. > :29:40.are running quite obviously using the same Renault

:29:41. > :29:44.downforce than your car? Yeah, Toro Rosso tends to do that quite a bit,

:29:45. > :29:46.they did the same in China and obviously the same here.

:29:47. > :29:49.they did the same in China and at the size of their rear wing

:29:50. > :29:54.compared to the Mercedes powered cars, it is quite a bit skinnier,

:29:55. > :29:59.and with our car, it is not the quickest way to run it, because what

:30:00. > :30:02.you gain on the straight you are more than compromising in the

:30:03. > :30:10.corners. So it is a different philosophy that they are adapting.

:30:11. > :30:15.Any indication of where you stand relative to Ferrari? I am not

:30:16. > :30:20.worried so much about Ferrari, but we are Fife tenth off Mercedes at

:30:21. > :30:26.the moment. Thank you, Christian. Cyst yarn horner there -- Christian

:30:27. > :30:46.Horner there. 22 cars have set a time. Sebastian

:30:47. > :30:52.Vettel will not be going out in this session. He is down in the garage

:30:53. > :31:07.and Max Chilton has been out and in several times and has been having

:31:08. > :31:11.problems with the Ferrari engine in that Marussia. Bianchi has moved on

:31:12. > :31:16.to the medium compound tyre. A number of drivers are doing that at

:31:17. > :31:20.this point. We have not seen them yet on the Mercedes of Lewis

:31:21. > :31:27.Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. But Daniel Ricciardo is on the medium

:31:28. > :31:34.tyre and Pastor Maldonado. While we are watching Bianchi, Jenny is in

:31:35. > :31:39.the Marussia garage. Jules is out, but Max Chilton is in the garage and

:31:40. > :31:43.he is watching his team mate go around the track. There is a problem

:31:44. > :31:46.with the power unit. Poor Max, they're not sure what is wrong with

:31:47. > :31:54.this Ferrari unit. But they're having a good look at to try and get

:31:55. > :31:59.Max out as soon as he can. It is frustrating to sit out when they're

:32:00. > :32:05.trying to get information. And they have a large up date package with a

:32:06. > :32:14.new nose and they have added down force points. But it is not helping

:32:15. > :32:21.Max Chilton now. It won't help Jules Bianchi, an accuse is Cesc -- an

:32:22. > :32:29.access hatch seems to be coming off. That allows the mechanics to get

:32:30. > :32:35.down into the car. The rear, there is two fasteners and the rear one

:32:36. > :32:42.had come off. The faster he went, the more it came off. That is

:32:43. > :32:47.against logic. He will never see it. It won't affect him. He won't know

:32:48. > :32:56.until he comes into the pits. Daniel Ricciardo coming through, what h

:32:57. > :33:02.this lap been like. This should take him to the top of the time sheets.

:33:03. > :33:06.It does indeed. He goes ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who

:33:07. > :33:12.have gettest yet to do -- who have yet to do their medium tyre run. The

:33:13. > :33:19.margin is half a second using the medium tyre compared to the harder

:33:20. > :33:22.tyres on the Mercedes. A lock up there for Pastor Maldonado down into

:33:23. > :33:29.that tricky turn 10 at the end of the back straight. They're braking

:33:30. > :33:33.from 190mph down to just 55mph. It is the big brake area, you want to

:33:34. > :33:39.get on it and there is some ripples in the surface. The one thing the

:33:40. > :33:45.Lotus has not been fantastic at is breaking over bumpy surfaces. He

:33:46. > :33:54.locked up and the car locked up and slid wide. Here we have a picture of

:33:55. > :33:57.the new lady in form one. E-- Formula One. She drove the Sauber

:33:58. > :34:03.last week and she is going to be out again by te end of June. She has a

:34:04. > :34:07.test programme with the two-year-old Sauber over the year. That is

:34:08. > :34:14.potential preparation for Formula One in the future. Suzy Wolf the

:34:15. > :34:20.other female driver is running here on Wednesday with the Williams. It

:34:21. > :34:24.is her first chance to get behind the wheel of the 2014 car. She will

:34:25. > :34:29.be having a day's running on Wednesday. As a prelude to her free

:34:30. > :34:34.practice one appearances at Silverstone and Germany. Coming up

:34:35. > :34:38.in July. That will be a real talking point. She is going to keep her head

:34:39. > :34:43.down next week and just learn the car and the 2014 ways with this

:34:44. > :34:50.hybrid turbo engines. But it will be one heck of a talking point when she

:34:51. > :34:53.goes out on Friday. I have known her for a long time and she will be

:34:54. > :34:59.thinking about it as a driver and will want to do the best job

:35:00. > :35:06.possible. She has been doing a heck of lock in the simulator, preparing.

:35:07. > :35:11.She has been at all the Grand Prixs absorbing it. So when she straps

:35:12. > :35:23.herself in next week, she is ready for what will come. Raikkonen has

:35:24. > :35:31.also moved op on to the medium tyre. He is one second slower than

:35:32. > :35:36.Hamilton. I asked Christian Horner how he feels he is doing, well he

:35:37. > :35:42.only wanted to think about how far he was behind the Mercedes cars.

:35:43. > :35:49.Even then you get the sense that Mercedes have more in their pocket.

:35:50. > :35:58.The battle between Ross erg and Hamilton is bringing out the best in

:35:59. > :36:02.both of them. Qualifying three is when you see what the Mercedes can

:36:03. > :36:08.do. Its not essential to be on pole any more in Barcelona. It used to

:36:09. > :36:14.be. We started coming here in 1991. Since the adjustable rear wings were

:36:15. > :36:19.introduced, we have had two winners who have not been on pole out of

:36:20. > :36:21.three races. I would still prefer to be on pole position. It is the best

:36:22. > :36:27.place to start a Grand Prix. be on pole position. It is the best

:36:28. > :36:35.man, sorry his team mate, Fernando Alonso, wasn't on the front row last

:36:36. > :36:43.year, but he did dominate. The car is more disconnected and quite a bit

:36:44. > :36:46.initially and then I just loose the rear. A lot

:36:47. > :36:49.initially and then I just loose the Daniel Ricciardo. That means the

:36:50. > :36:51.front and rear are not working together. He

:36:52. > :36:58.front and rear are not working at the front and something else on

:36:59. > :37:03.the rear. That is at the rear. So it doesn't turn as he wants. That makes

:37:04. > :37:07.it inconsistent. We talked about the wind in this circuit

:37:08. > :37:11.it inconsistent. We talked about the characteristics with the long

:37:12. > :37:17.corners and the track attempt that is 45 degrees. You need to have a

:37:18. > :37:21.consistent car. With this type of characteristic, the corner is very

:37:22. > :37:27.port for your lap -- important for your lap time. Things at the front

:37:28. > :37:31.and rear are connected suspension systems are supposed to iron out.

:37:32. > :37:38.They're talking of getting rid of those, along with other discussion

:37:39. > :37:43.like going to active suspension to introduce low-profile tyres. I can't

:37:44. > :37:47.see how that is a cost effective measure. Raikkonen is making his way

:37:48. > :37:54.around. He is not looking as Leary as he was this morning but there is

:37:55. > :37:58.still a bit of work going on. Some of her corner exits in the McLaren

:37:59. > :38:03.back in the day, they were mighty coming out of that turn. He is third

:38:04. > :38:06.fastest. But Daniel Ricciardo is fastest and Hamilton has set the new

:38:07. > :38:13.fastest first sector. Rosberg fastest and Hamilton has set the new

:38:14. > :38:14.done a fast middle secondest sector, sorry first sector. He is on target

:38:15. > :38:22.to go sorry first sector. He is on target

:38:23. > :38:27.These are the decisive qualifying simulation runs. Rosberg coming to

:38:28. > :38:37.the end of the lap. He turns in at 90mph and picks up the throttle and

:38:38. > :38:47.a job on it and down into the 55mph section. He is on the rumble strip

:38:48. > :38:52.outside turn 16. Up to 200mph. He is five seconds slower than last year's

:38:53. > :38:56.poll time. Hamilton has had the upper hand in the last three,

:38:57. > :38:57.poll time. Hamilton has had the he starp his authority again on his

:38:58. > :39:15.team mate? Yes he does. Hamilton is in that Championship

:39:16. > :39:20.mode mentality. We have got Jenson Button, where is he now? He is down

:39:21. > :39:24.in ninth place. Kevin Magnussen is in tenth. So a good showing from

:39:25. > :39:27.McLaren this morning. Burr Tom is there now. What is going on. They're

:39:28. > :39:31.firing up there now. What is going on. They're

:39:32. > :39:34.warmers are coming out and there now. What is going on. They're

:39:35. > :39:39.Button is going out on the medium tyre. They have changed the balance

:39:40. > :39:43.in the front wing and off he goes. In the last five minutes, I have

:39:44. > :39:46.been discussing with some of the guys here in the team about the

:39:47. > :39:51.changes they have made to the car and they have made quite a few

:39:52. > :39:57.changes they have made to the car upgrateds -- upgrades for the race

:39:58. > :40:01.with a new diffuser and tweaks to the wing. Was

:40:02. > :40:07.with a new diffuser and tweaks to something to get excited about?

:40:08. > :40:11.Well, they seemed pretty relaxed here. It begs the question, what do

:40:12. > :40:16.you need from your car, if they're getting more rear grip, from the

:40:17. > :40:22.diffuser, how will that help the car and if he has changed the ballast?

:40:23. > :40:26.If you take it as a package. It is not just one thing that you can

:40:27. > :40:33.throw on and not have it interact with everything else. The diffuser

:40:34. > :40:39.makes the aerodynamics work better and will suck the car down on to the

:40:40. > :40:43.circuit and give the driver confidence coming into the corner.

:40:44. > :40:48.Daniel Ricciardo said about the inconsistency of car. It should put

:40:49. > :40:52.more push into the front. If you put the weight to the front that,

:40:53. > :40:58.counter acts that. So it is a case of building the package, not just

:40:59. > :41:03.necessarily throw one part in. It is constant evolution and something

:41:04. > :41:07.that will adapt. The teams know in principle, but in theory is what you

:41:08. > :41:11.want. They have tested before. And you have to see whether it is right

:41:12. > :41:18.for these current cars and tyres. That is a shot of Fernando Alonso,

:41:19. > :41:25.the local hero, last year's Grand Prix winner. A lot of people hoping

:41:26. > :41:30.he can get a challenge for the victory here. But yesterday in the

:41:31. > :41:36.press conference the drivers' press conference, he was pouring doled

:41:37. > :41:42.water on -- cold water after that last result in Shanghai. You can see

:41:43. > :41:48.the work going on with the steering wheel. The back and the front not

:41:49. > :41:52.always going where he wants to. Just seeing it coming through the long

:41:53. > :41:57.uphill right hander as he accelerating, he is fighting into an

:41:58. > :42:05.oversteer. The car looks as if it does not have the grip. The lap time

:42:06. > :42:10.suggests the car is sliding too much. He needs to hook an edge on

:42:11. > :42:14.the tyre and then go around. Lewis Hamilton from Rosberg from Daniel

:42:15. > :42:17.Ricciardo from Fernando Alonso. The question I asked Christian Horner,

:42:18. > :42:24.where are you relative to Ferrari, quite a way ahead is the answer.

:42:25. > :42:28.Sebastian Vettel taking no part in this free practice two session after

:42:29. > :42:36.a wiring loom failure after just four laps of this morning's free

:42:37. > :42:40.practice. So four laps all that Sebastian Vettel has done so far

:42:41. > :42:45.this weekend. He will go into free practice three tomorrow and

:42:46. > :42:50.qualifying fairly blind in cam Parson to everyone -- comparison to

:42:51. > :42:56.everyone else. He has not turned a wheel yet in 2014, all the

:42:57. > :43:01.pretesting did not happen here, most happened in Bahrain, with a test

:43:02. > :43:05.elsewhere. Button is into sixth place. We were hear b about the

:43:06. > :43:12.updates on that McLaren, but not putting them ahead at this point of

:43:13. > :43:14.the Ferraris. But he is ahead of Felipe Massa. Here is Bottas in

:43:15. > :43:31.11th. Nico Hulkenberg is on the medium

:43:32. > :43:37.compound tyre. He is the other driver that you would expect to see

:43:38. > :43:41.further up to the front in the Mercedes Force India. Yes on

:43:42. > :43:47.previous form, but this circuit is quite different. It is something

:43:48. > :43:51.that has not historically suited the Force Indias as much as China or

:43:52. > :43:55.Bahrain. That is where that middle grid is interesting, where the

:43:56. > :44:03.McLarens will end up and the Force Indias and whether Sauber with their

:44:04. > :44:15.new lighter chassis and 15 kilograms around here is a difference and to

:44:16. > :44:22.see whether that can leapfrog them up. The Lotus is worth keeping an

:44:23. > :44:32.eye on, they have a lot of updates on that car. There is 11th. He has

:44:33. > :44:37.been quicker in qualifying. Verne has had the lion's share of the

:44:38. > :44:42.reliability problems. I was speaking to them yesterday as they were

:44:43. > :44:47.practicing their pit stops, and asked if he could surprise us.

:44:48. > :44:50.practicing their pit stops, and smiled and said the kid's good! They

:44:51. > :44:54.can see someone that is fresh for the future and they can develop them

:44:55. > :44:59.in the way they want. He doesn't come with any baggage. He has done a

:45:00. > :45:03.good and consistent job over the first four Grand Prix of the year.

:45:04. > :45:08.He has had three point-scoring finishing and the one he didn't

:45:09. > :45:20.score, he finished 11th. That is one position outside the points. I like

:45:21. > :45:25.the look of him, watching him in GP3 last year...

:45:26. > :45:36.I want to apologise, we are connecting now, we will go again.

:45:37. > :45:43.Apparently after charging the battery in the garage, we were too

:45:44. > :45:47.quick to go. A procedure issue. It is good that Romain Grosjean as

:45:48. > :45:51.that, because I was about to ask the same thing! They have to wait a

:45:52. > :45:58.little bit of time, and plugging the battery, and then they are allowed

:45:59. > :46:02.to go. -- unplugging. Frustrating and annoying. Yes, indeed, and that

:46:03. > :46:07.is the emotion that Sebastian Vettel is undergoing at the moment, only

:46:08. > :46:11.four laps on the board in practice, none of them this afternoon. He is

:46:12. > :46:16.sitting it out after a wiring loom problem. We are past the halfway

:46:17. > :46:20.stage of this session, starting to get into the long runs now. We have

:46:21. > :46:25.had qualifying simulator and from most people, certainly the people

:46:26. > :46:33.who will be fighting for pole position. -- qualifying

:46:34. > :46:37.simulations. We will analyse their race preparation as it goes through,

:46:38. > :46:42.get an idea of who is looking good in terms of race conditions, but in

:46:43. > :46:49.terms of outright raw pace of a single lap, the Mercedes still have

:46:50. > :46:56.their noses in front. Hamilton is one second faster than the next

:46:57. > :47:06.non-Mercedes car. Daniel Ricciardo, Hamilton has four tense over his

:47:07. > :47:20.team-mate as well. -- ball attempts. -- four tenths. That is the real

:47:21. > :47:23.battle, because on paper this is a Rosberg type of circuit, and the

:47:24. > :47:24.thing that Lewis Hamilton has been thinking about is how to improve

:47:25. > :47:28.himself not thinking about is how to improve

:47:29. > :47:30.already good at, but the tracks where his

:47:31. > :47:33.already good at, but the tracks advantage. All of these

:47:34. > :47:35.psychological battles, it is one of the things that we are licking our

:47:36. > :47:41.lips about this year. We will watch lips about this year. We will watch

:47:42. > :47:45.this Grosjean lap, but why is Barcelona more of a Rosberg circuit?

:47:46. > :47:47.this Grosjean lap, but why is What are the characteristics of this

:47:48. > :47:51.place and Bahrain compares to China, which does not suit him

:47:52. > :47:55.well? But let's focus on Romain Grosjean and give you an idea about

:47:56. > :48:02.this circuit, into the long right-hander at turn three, about

:48:03. > :48:07.eight seconds at 4 G. They are not quite as fast in this corner as they

:48:08. > :48:15.were in the past, down towards turn four, down-to-earth turn five, the

:48:16. > :48:20.left-hander downhill. -- down towards. You plunge down

:48:21. > :48:25.significantly, trying to get the car straight, then flick left and right

:48:26. > :48:32.up the hill, using all the kerb. There is a big bag get kerb on the

:48:33. > :48:39.inside, you cannot hit that now. Onto the Astroturf with a bit of

:48:40. > :48:43.oversteer on the exit. DRS closes, he runs a bit wide, just overshoots

:48:44. > :48:52.the corner, dust is thrown up anti-aborts the lap. A driver

:48:53. > :48:55.mistake? Yes, he was an attack mode, we know Romain Grosjean has an

:48:56. > :49:03.attack mode. A little frustration there.

:49:04. > :49:09.I wonder if that is engine braking problems continuing on another lap.

:49:10. > :49:13.Discussion problems continuing on another lap.

:49:14. > :49:15.engineering team there. Certainly something was not right in the

:49:16. > :49:19.retardation of that car something was not right in the

:49:20. > :49:22.the left-hander at turn ten. Coming out of nine, he has a DRS wing

:49:23. > :49:31.open. Something very unusual about the way

:49:32. > :49:35.the car got into the corner, we wondered whether it was a driver

:49:36. > :49:38.error or some sort of problem on the engine. They recharge the battery

:49:39. > :49:45.under braking, of course, in corners like that. It is a heavy braking

:49:46. > :49:52.area, we have seen other people go wide in this session. We will wait

:49:53. > :49:55.and see. Let's drill down into that Rosberg-Hamilton thing, Bahrain,

:49:56. > :50:00.always a great Rosberg circuit, Barcelona, he was on pole last

:50:01. > :50:08.year, terrific circuit for him. What is it about this

:50:09. > :50:11.year, terrific circuit for him. What Hamilton having the edge over him in

:50:12. > :50:13.places like China? I think this particular circuit is one

:50:14. > :50:18.places like China? I think this have got to really have a lot of

:50:19. > :50:22.finesse, a lot of feel. Nico Rosberg has got very minimal input on

:50:23. > :50:29.steering wheel. Lewis Hamilton, just by the nature of the make-up of the

:50:30. > :50:33.driver, throws it into turns, and that suits the track in China. This

:50:34. > :50:36.one, it is all about the tiny little movements all the way through from

:50:37. > :50:41.the start to the end of the corners, long corners, and that

:50:42. > :50:46.affects the tyre, the energy that goes into the tyre, the heat in the

:50:47. > :50:50.tyre, and it is a hard circuit for tyres anyway. If you drive it on the

:50:51. > :50:55.edge, you can push it over its limits and then you lose grip and go

:50:56. > :51:00.slower. That is what happened to Lewis Hamilton last year, when he

:51:01. > :51:03.started on the front row and dropped like a stone by

:51:04. > :51:07.started on the front row and dropped thought it had a technical problem,

:51:08. > :51:11.but his tyres had gone. They are much more durable now, and he has

:51:12. > :51:19.thought about the process of how he drives, and I don't expect the same

:51:20. > :51:23.as we had last year, but on paper it is a circuit that Nico Rosberg has

:51:24. > :51:29.always gone well at, Lewis Hamilton a little bit less so. I find this

:51:30. > :51:34.stuff fascinating, because another comparison is Vettel, this has never

:51:35. > :51:39.been a fantastic Vettel circuit. He has won here but never been on pole,

:51:40. > :51:42.a bit of a bogey track for him. Mark Webber was always faster, or this is

:51:43. > :51:44.one of the circuit where he would tend to challenge him. You have

:51:45. > :51:52.always got circuits that you like. You have got characteristics in a

:51:53. > :51:56.car that you like and you get on with, or in a particular type of

:51:57. > :52:00.tyre philosophy, and in the track. And you get to a track that you

:52:01. > :52:04.like, and you smile as soon as you drive through the gate, and you feel

:52:05. > :52:09.you understand it, you know where the important parts are to get the

:52:10. > :52:13.time out of it, you know when not to compromise. On the other side, there

:52:14. > :52:17.are circuits where you are scratching your head. You might only

:52:18. > :52:22.be a fraction of, but that is the difference between winning and

:52:23. > :52:32.losing. -- a fraction of a second off. If there is a circuit where you

:52:33. > :52:38.win, there is a bit of levity. What are the Allan McNish circuits? I

:52:39. > :52:42.like big circuits, even though I have not had a lot of success here,

:52:43. > :52:44.like big circuits, even though I I really enjoyed this circuit. You

:52:45. > :52:48.have to have the balance between aggression and finesse in the long

:52:49. > :52:53.runs. In qualifying, it was about chucking it into the corners and

:52:54. > :52:56.sorting it out, but in long runs you have to think about it.

:52:57. > :53:01.sorting it out, but in long runs you circuits for you? All the rest?! Not

:53:02. > :53:05.all the rest! My bogey circuit was China, that was one. It's just never

:53:06. > :53:09.clicked with me there. China, that was one. It's just never

:53:10. > :53:15.performances, but it was not one that I came away thinking, yeah,

:53:16. > :53:19.that was fantastic. Apart from Australia, which is a complete

:53:20. > :53:24.one-off as far as Formula One is concerned, a smooth surfaced streets

:53:25. > :53:29.track around a park in the centre of Melbourne, so very different from

:53:30. > :53:35.anything else in Formula One, but Malaysia, Bahrain and China, those

:53:36. > :53:41.other three races we have been to, all modern circuits designed by

:53:42. > :53:43.Formula One architect Hermann Tilke. He always features long straights,

:53:44. > :53:49.and in China it is over one kilometre long. That is a difference

:53:50. > :53:53.with Barcelona, there is no long straight. There is the pit straight,

:53:54. > :53:58.but in comparison to the modern Hermann Tilke circuits, it is short,

:53:59. > :54:01.relatively speaking. A bit of bodywork on the middle of the

:54:02. > :54:04.circuit, the marshals will want to clear that way. Race director

:54:05. > :54:09.Charlie Whiting will want that moved, it is not in a good place,

:54:10. > :54:15.right in the middle of the circuit. A replay of Max Chilton coming up

:54:16. > :54:19.the hill, cresting at the corner, turn nine, and as we saw with Romain

:54:20. > :54:26.Grosjean, getting a little bit wide. That is actually the component

:54:27. > :54:31.coming off the car, a big chicane, and they have got big bouncing

:54:32. > :54:37.kerbs on both sides, and that has clicked off, probably caught the

:54:38. > :54:41.edge of a kerb. Max Chilton's mum and dad, his father is a big wheel

:54:42. > :54:44.in the insurance business, they very wealthy man indeed. He comes with

:54:45. > :54:55.his wife, who supports their Sir Max wealthy man indeed. He comes with

:54:56. > :55:02.actually. -- who supports their son Max. 35 minutes remaining on the

:55:03. > :55:06.clock, we are in the long run phase, although robbery only half of the

:55:07. > :55:12.cars in the field are out on circuit at the moment. -- probably. Keep

:55:13. > :55:16.your comments coming in using the hashtag #bbcf1. From Matt Webster,

:55:17. > :55:20.can the teams change or try different body panels during

:55:21. > :55:27.practice? Yes, certainly, no problem with that. This is not an official

:55:28. > :55:31.session. It is timed, but not meaningfully like qualifying. You

:55:32. > :55:35.can try whatever you want, if you want to change front wings, as we

:55:36. > :55:41.saw Ferrari doing, different front wings between the two cars, you can

:55:42. > :55:45.do that, perfectly fine. It is like a test session, essentially, and not

:55:46. > :55:49.only can they change body panels, they can use infrared cameras to

:55:50. > :55:53.measure temperatures and look at air flow. You can attach all sorts of

:55:54. > :55:55.measurement devices to your car during Friday free practice which

:55:56. > :55:59.you are not allowed to do from Saturday morning onwards, and you

:56:00. > :56:04.see quite a lot of those when you see new upgrades. If you look at the

:56:05. > :56:08.camera mounts on Rosberg's car, you will see that they are not the same

:56:09. > :56:12.size, one is a lot bigger than the other. That is not a standard TV

:56:13. > :56:16.camera, it is one that is measuring airflow, I think, coming out of the

:56:17. > :56:21.exhaust at the back and looking at the flow at the back of the engine

:56:22. > :56:26.cowl. Yes, but the car does still have to configure to regulations.

:56:27. > :56:31.You have to run within the parameters of that. As we see the

:56:32. > :56:34.marshal not 100% sure, he has not got the conviction of Usain Bolt to

:56:35. > :56:39.come across and grab that piece of bodywork. Certainly a job that we

:56:40. > :56:44.should be very thankful that they do, but I am not sure I would enjoy

:56:45. > :56:48.that myself. They are the unsung heroes of motorsport, not just

:56:49. > :56:53.Formula One, but motorsport all over the world. Most of those people of

:56:54. > :56:56.volunteers, and you couldn't put a race one without something like 5000

:56:57. > :57:00.volunteers doing everything from running out on track to create

:57:01. > :57:04.broken -- to collect broken bodywork, to volunteering in medical

:57:05. > :57:07.facilities and other jobs. There is an enormous voluntary sector in

:57:08. > :57:11.motorsport generally, without which the whole thing simply would not

:57:12. > :57:15.happen. It is also quite a good way of getting close to the sport if you

:57:16. > :57:19.are an enthusiasts and want to get closer than buying a ticket and

:57:20. > :57:24.sitting in the grandstand. Training up as a marshal is one way. You are

:57:25. > :57:29.a big part of the sport, not just sitting on the sideline, actively

:57:30. > :57:31.making it happen, and there are a lot of British marshals, and they

:57:32. > :57:37.are some of the best in the world. They go around to other big events,

:57:38. > :57:41.like a big ensemble arriving and setting up the structure for the

:57:42. > :57:45.rest of the groups. It goes further than that, because underneath the

:57:46. > :57:49.RAC MSA they actually go out to emerging motorsport nations and

:57:50. > :57:53.train up their marshals and clerks of the course so that they can raise

:57:54. > :58:00.standards in countries that have never even had a racetrack before.

:58:01. > :58:06.That is a big part of what they do, that is part of what the McLaren

:58:07. > :58:11.fine in 2007 was spent on, training motorsport around the world. Daniel

:58:12. > :58:16.Ricciardo, down the straight, we heard a little

:58:17. > :58:17.of the car skipping the ground, that is the ride height downed two

:58:18. > :58:25.absolutely zero is the ride height downed two

:58:26. > :58:31.the ride height downed to absolutely zero at that point. You can see on

:58:32. > :58:36.the front suspension of his car that the car is moving up and down a bit,

:58:37. > :58:40.but the travel of the suspension is not great, and some of the

:58:41. > :58:44.suspension is actually in the flexing of the tyre sidewall, isn't

:58:45. > :58:49.it? If the car is bottoming out, it is because of the aerodynamic load

:58:50. > :58:53.pushing it down. It certainly is, but most of the deflection is in the

:58:54. > :58:58.tyre, and the difficulty is controlling that. You can doubt it

:58:59. > :59:03.quite easily, but that is an damp spring, the tyre, and that is one of

:59:04. > :59:07.the things they have to do, make sure the car works in conjunction

:59:08. > :59:11.with the tyre. Daniel Ricciardo now coming through the last couple of

:59:12. > :59:17.corners, the new chicane that was introduced a few years ago, they

:59:18. > :59:21.lost a bit of the feel of the track for me. It used to be two flat-out

:59:22. > :59:26.right-handers. This is not going to be one of his quick collapse, it is

:59:27. > :59:32.the start of his long run. -- his quick laps. He has just done a

:59:33. > :59:37.1:31.9, so no real quick laps. He has just done a

:59:38. > :59:44.tyre over three laps. You can get in touch

:59:45. > :59:48.tyre over three laps. You can get in will win a race in the first half of

:59:49. > :59:52.the season? On a similar theme, Tony says, is his championship over? A

:59:53. > :59:54.bit early to say that after four Grands Prix, particularly if you

:59:55. > :00:00.look at Ricciardo in Grands Prix, particularly if you

:00:01. > :00:02.of the rest, the way it looks at the moment, but

:00:03. > :00:05.of the rest, the way it looks at the in the first half of the season?

:00:06. > :00:07.of the rest, the way it looks at the think it is going to be very, very

:00:08. > :00:11.unlikely. You and I had a bet think it is going to be very, very

:00:12. > :00:15.the season, and we thought Red Bull would be back in the fight for the

:00:16. > :00:19.world championship, and it was not a foregone conclusion.

:00:20. > :00:24.was wrong on this occasion, I think this is a critical weekend for them.

:00:25. > :00:27.was wrong on this occasion, I think get in amongst it, a lot closer than

:00:28. > :00:29.they are at the moment, it is going to be really hard to see anyone

:00:30. > :00:33.fighting to be really hard to see anyone

:00:34. > :00:39.victories in the first part of the year. Mercedes are almost

:00:40. > :00:44.victories in the first part of the points clear in the constructors'

:00:45. > :00:50.Championship. So I can't see them surrounding -- surrendering 100

:00:51. > :00:51.points. That is already close to a foregone conclusion. The

:00:52. > :00:57.points. That is already close to a Championship is more open and t

:00:58. > :01:01.final Grand Prix does pay double points. A lot of fans

:01:02. > :01:03.final Grand Prix does pay double and a lot of people who work in

:01:04. > :01:09.Formula One don't like it, but it is still in place. The winner of the

:01:10. > :01:14.final race will get 50 points so the drivers' Championship will not be a

:01:15. > :01:18.foregone conclusion for a long time. Certainly not until, at the earliest

:01:19. > :01:24.the final couple of rounds. A couple of cars out on circuit now. McLaren

:01:25. > :01:30.and Massa in the Williams. Circulating around. Here is another

:01:31. > :01:37.update with half an hour remaining from Barcelona with Tom Clarkson in

:01:38. > :01:41.the pit lane. I'm at Ferrari. Both of the Ferrari drivers have come

:01:42. > :01:45.past twice in the pit lane in the last five minutes and done practice

:01:46. > :01:50.starts at the end of the pit lane. It is worth commenting on that. This

:01:51. > :01:54.is the longest run of the year from pole to the apex of turn one. A lot

:01:55. > :02:01.can happen during that time at the start of the race. It is crucial to

:02:02. > :02:06.get a good getaway on Sunday. Ferrari focussing on that and both

:02:07. > :02:10.of the Williams drivers have been doing that. That is probably the

:02:11. > :02:13.influence of Felipe Massa and Rob Smedley. That is something Ferrari

:02:14. > :02:16.have done for a long time and Williams are starting to do it and

:02:17. > :02:21.they're starting to make good starts. I don't think this a a

:02:22. > :02:26.coincidence. And it is one of the longest runs to turn one of the

:02:27. > :02:30.season. Getting off the line well is crucial. And it suggests that

:02:31. > :02:40.Ferrari are clear they are going to need a good start and won't be able

:02:41. > :02:43.to keep everyone behind. It has been Fernando Alonso's trick over the

:02:44. > :02:47.last few years. We know they have struggled with qualifying pace. By

:02:48. > :02:53.the time he gets around the first lap he is in a decrepit position.

:02:54. > :03:00.But to get a sniff of it at turn one you need to get off the line. You

:03:01. > :03:05.might as well practice those parts that maybe some of the other teams

:03:06. > :03:14.don't think about so much. It was here in 2010 or 2012 he made a

:03:15. > :03:18.blistering start from fourth on the grid and he led into turn one,

:03:19. > :03:23.having started fourth. It was 2011 I think it was. It was a stunning

:03:24. > :03:32.start by Fernando Alonso in Barcelona. Here we have Daniel

:03:33. > :03:38.Ricciardo and you can see the tyres on 32.1. So just under a second drop

:03:39. > :03:42.in the medium tyre. If we remember back, I don't know if you can,

:03:43. > :03:46.Fernando Alonso struggling and fish-tailing and working at the

:03:47. > :03:49.wheel coming through that long right-hander. By contrast we have

:03:50. > :03:54.Daniel Ricciardo and it looks like it is a Sunday afternoon drive.

:03:55. > :04:02.Although the tyre is going off, it seems to be going off in a more

:04:03. > :04:07.logical fashion. Looking at that final section, that that is an

:04:08. > :04:12.important indicator, it is a sl speed sector and important for form

:04:13. > :04:19.for Monaco. Generally the cars that are quick here during this weekend

:04:20. > :04:25.in sector three, the slow 55mph chicane at turns 14 and 15 and the

:04:26. > :04:30.corners that lead into it, the cars that go well in that sector tend to

:04:31. > :04:34.go well in Monaco. Hamilton is the fastest man through that sector, but

:04:35. > :04:39.he is the fastest through every sector. But that Red Bull looked

:04:40. > :04:43.nicely hooked up. Red Bull will go into Monaco feeling reasonable about

:04:44. > :04:49.things. But it will suit the Mercedes as well. It is not just

:04:50. > :04:53.about brute power, but it is about the balance of the chassis. Mercedes

:04:54. > :04:56.have been working well. They have been strong in Monaco. Michael

:04:57. > :05:01.Schumacher took pole there. Of course coming after that Canada,

:05:02. > :05:07.which is the ultimate Lewis Hamilton circuit. He is almost unbeatable

:05:08. > :05:11.around there, as long as his car performs. I think Rosberg won't see

:05:12. > :05:15.him for dust that weekend. But Monaco will be a massive fight

:05:16. > :05:19.between the two Mercedes drivers. I think it will be a heck of a fight

:05:20. > :05:23.any way. The circuit is all prepared, they have the historic

:05:24. > :05:27.Grand Prix on this weekend and every thing is ready to rock for Monaco.

:05:28. > :05:31.Before that we have this Spanish Grand Prix and Pastor Maldonado we

:05:32. > :05:35.are now running with. Lotus has been struggling and right now with this

:05:36. > :05:41.tyre life as well, he has got a big drop off. He looks like he has hit

:05:42. > :05:46.the end of his tyre. It had done 19 laps it said and he was at 34s and

:05:47. > :05:50.two seconds drop between the beginning and end. That is when you

:05:51. > :05:54.have to think about a pit stop. He is running the medium tyre. Massa

:05:55. > :06:01.has been doing work on the harder compound tyre on his long runs. That

:06:02. > :06:04.is interesting. Most people are focussing their long runs on the

:06:05. > :06:08.medium tyre. This morning they saw the hard tyre and they had an extra

:06:09. > :06:13.set in the first 30 minutes and the tyre looked OK. There was a bit of

:06:14. > :06:19.graining where it is like you have got a rubber and you rub it across

:06:20. > :06:23.the desk and you get that rolling effect. Bup it wasn't a lot. So I

:06:24. > :06:27.think they're sure of the hard tyre and the performance is more on the

:06:28. > :06:31.medium tyre. So therefore you try to see where the medium can go and how

:06:32. > :06:35.long it can go and your safety net is that harder tyre. Did

:06:36. > :06:39.long it can go and your safety net positive the steer was on that

:06:40. > :06:45.Mercedes as he came out of that 55mph chicane? It just went exactly

:06:46. > :06:49.where he wanted it to. The whole car pivoted on the the front wheel. That

:06:50. > :06:52.is exactly what you want. Such a struggle for a lot of the other

:06:53. > :06:56.teams to achieve that. Trust me, there is a few drivers that will be

:06:57. > :07:02.watching replays of this going to their designers, seeing, do you see

:07:03. > :07:05.the positivity of that Mercedes. They have got it hooked up and

:07:06. > :07:13.everything on a high level. They have not got one weakness right now.

:07:14. > :07:18.That is why they're so far ahead. Every other teemest team has an --

:07:19. > :07:22.every other team has an area of weakness. But they have got a very

:07:23. > :07:33.fast car and a consistent management structure. Watch this. Oh, he is not

:07:34. > :07:39.pushing! He is on a a cruise run. There is not a long run with Lewis

:07:40. > :07:44.Hamilton that we can call a cruise. He was not attacking the chicane. He

:07:45. > :07:48.was trying to be smooth. He has got to try to manage the tyres over the

:07:49. > :07:53.course of time. But he is coming back down into some very good lap

:07:54. > :07:58.times in comparison to Nico Rosberg. He has been able to manage the

:07:59. > :08:01.expectation of the tyre pretty well so far. An excursion for Max

:08:02. > :08:08.Chilton, already left some Marussia so far. An excursion for Max

:08:09. > :08:12.bodywork out that one so far. An excursion for Max

:08:13. > :08:12.went to get. We have some more questions.

:08:13. > :08:22.think will be on the podium this weekend? I think it is going to be

:08:23. > :08:25.Kirsty, a Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg somewhere there. The

:08:26. > :08:30.question is who is third. I have to say I'm going go with this man,

:08:31. > :08:34.Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari. Because he is -- because he has

:08:35. > :08:38.managed to pull so much out of that car this year. You can see by Kimi

:08:39. > :08:44.Raikkonen's struggles how much he has been able to extract out of it.

:08:45. > :08:51.And he is on home soil. A Spaniard on home soil in Barcelona, that is a

:08:52. > :08:59.potent combination. He pulls out from behind the Caterham of

:09:00. > :09:05.Kobayashi. I will go for Daniel Ricciardo. But even the heroics

:09:06. > :09:09.inspired by his local crowd of Fernando Alonso, I think it will a

:09:10. > :09:13.struggle to get in front of Red Bull. It will be interesting to see

:09:14. > :09:20.if Daniel Ricciardo can get in front of Vettel. Now here is the pit lane

:09:21. > :09:22.with Tom. I wanted to add to the conversation about Kimi Raikkonen

:09:23. > :09:27.and Fernando Alonso and it reminded me of a conversation I had with

:09:28. > :09:33.Fernando in Bahrain before the season started. I said to him, you

:09:34. > :09:34.haven't worked under the same roof as Kimi Raikkonen, because there

:09:35. > :09:38.only one car as Kimi Raikkonen, because there

:09:39. > :09:44.anything that Kimi has been doing with your car that has made you sort

:09:45. > :09:49.of sit up and take notice? He just, long sigh sense and, an Ayrton

:09:50. > :09:56.Senna-esque silence and then nothing! We are see that, the

:09:57. > :10:01.difference between the two drivers. Yes, two world champions driving,

:10:02. > :10:07.but very different way of going about their business. Kimi Raikkonen

:10:08. > :10:11.has not be on the pace of Fernando Alonso. He

:10:12. > :10:18.place in the Championship and six points scored in the first round and

:10:19. > :10:21.only one point in Bahrain. Nothing in Malaysia and four in China.

:10:22. > :10:30.Fernando Alonso is on 12, 12, two in Malaysia and four in China.

:10:31. > :10:35.and 15. Bahrain was a difficult time. Their president was away

:10:36. > :10:40.furious at the state of competitiveness of Ferrari. It was a

:10:41. > :10:45.shame he didn't turn up in China to see Fernando Alonso on the podium.

:10:46. > :10:49.But he has energised everyone. The team boss has come in

:10:50. > :10:50.But he has energised everyone. The Bahrain Grand Prix weekend and he

:10:51. > :10:56.will have to get hold of his team and set a course forwards for the

:10:57. > :10:59.future I was having a look around and meeting some people and went

:11:00. > :11:01.future I was having a look around see the new building they're moving

:11:02. > :11:03.future I was having a look around into, it will be a new Formula One

:11:04. > :11:06.factory that is into, it will be a new Formula One

:11:07. > :11:11.It looks like a building site, into, it will be a new Formula One

:11:12. > :11:16.they're going to try and move into it over the close season. So a lot

:11:17. > :11:17.of work to do. But it is an impressive facility that will raise

:11:18. > :11:22.their game. When impressive facility that will raise

:11:23. > :11:25.race and engine bays, it is fantastic and the walls just

:11:26. > :11:27.race and engine bays, it is the history of Ferrari. But they are

:11:28. > :11:32.race action for decade and they're not,

:11:33. > :11:38.when you compare that with the race bays at McLaren for example, the

:11:39. > :11:43.technology centre in Woking, it is like being at NASA, compared to

:11:44. > :11:47.Ferrari. So Ferrari gearing up for the future and there is a lot of

:11:48. > :11:53.investment going into the facilities. But now the management

:11:54. > :11:57.group have to got to galvanise and build a fast car and hold on to

:11:58. > :12:01.Fernando Alonso. He is one of the keys. But if Fernando Alonso does

:12:02. > :12:06.go, I think there is a few guys out there that might be interested in

:12:07. > :12:11.sniffing around that seat. But this is speculation for the future. The

:12:12. > :12:14.fact is that Ferrari have underperformed by their standards.

:12:15. > :12:20.They still have been fighting for race victories and been fighting for

:12:21. > :12:27.Championships, but that is not quite acceptable for the Italians. At some

:12:28. > :12:32.point there had to be a change. It surprised me it came so early in

:12:33. > :12:38.this season, but I think they're building towards 2015 as opposed to

:12:39. > :12:44.trying to rescue 2014. The problem with the new technology, the lead

:12:45. > :12:54.times on some of the items are so long, in engines you're talk about

:12:55. > :12:59.six to nine months. How are the ty Completely finished is the response

:13:00. > :13:06.from Pastor Maldonado. How many laps do we think he has done? He says he

:13:07. > :13:11.has done 21. We spoke about him rlier and he was down in the 34s.

:13:12. > :13:15.I'm not surprised it is finished. He looked to be struggling between his

:13:16. > :13:22.quickest lap that was a couple of looked to be struggling between his

:13:23. > :13:30.seconds. Ehas done 1.33.09. But he will be burning off a lot of fuel. T

:13:31. > :13:35.weight of car will have come down. So that is the over two seconds, the

:13:36. > :13:39.car should be going two seconds quicker in term of the fuel it has

:13:40. > :13:43.burned off. One guy that is going very quick is Lewis Hamilton. Just

:13:44. > :13:47.looking at his long runs now. He is down about ten lap and still running

:13:48. > :14:00.at 31.0. Lewis Hamilton fastest on the

:14:01. > :14:05.qualifying simulations. Four tenth of a second quicker than Nico

:14:06. > :14:10.Rosberg and a full second faster than Daniel Ricciardo, the next

:14:11. > :14:15.non-Mercedes car in third. But the long run performance as well is

:14:16. > :14:22.looking very strong for Lewis Hamilton. He has got control and has

:14:23. > :14:26.not got control of the drivers' World Championship, because of that

:14:27. > :14:31.reliability issue in Melbourne, he still trails Rosberg, who has a win

:14:32. > :14:35.and two second places. Even after this hat trick of victories, Lewis

:14:36. > :14:39.Hamilton is still not in control of drivers' Championship. Four points

:14:40. > :14:43.behind he is going into this weekend. So victory would put him at

:14:44. > :14:46.the top of the drivers' table. It would, but it is going to be a tough

:14:47. > :14:51.fight. There is no question about it. You know, Kimi Raikkonen is now

:14:52. > :14:55.out as he crosses this start/finish line to start another lap. He is on

:14:56. > :15:06.lap nine of this stint, where the tyres are older. He is down 32.4s on

:15:07. > :15:08.the medium tyre. His team mate is on the the harder tyre. It

:15:09. > :15:11.the medium tyre. His team mate is on run, if you take the tyre effect

:15:12. > :15:23.into account it is probably the second best right now. The tyre is

:15:24. > :15:27.15 laps old, this particular stint is just nine laps long, so giving

:15:28. > :15:31.something away to Hamilton, but relatively consistent from

:15:32. > :15:35.Raikkonen. That is one of the things that some drivers do, give the tyre

:15:36. > :15:40.is a bit of a breather during a long run, but you can't do that in a

:15:41. > :15:45.Grand Prix, so it is a bit strange, I never quite understand that. It is

:15:46. > :15:48.quite up round here as well, because it is all corners, they all

:15:49. > :15:53.interlinked into everything else, and the other factor is that Kimi

:15:54. > :15:57.Raikkonen came across a little bit of traffic as well, which will have

:15:58. > :16:01.had a small effect. But you are trying to keep as much energy out of

:16:02. > :16:04.the tyre as you can while going quickly, a balancing act. This is

:16:05. > :16:11.one of the tricky corners, big oversteer as he comes into hot, and

:16:12. > :16:20.he will have two combat that through the next corners. -- he comes in too

:16:21. > :16:24.hard. We are starting to get used to the noise of the hybrid engines, not

:16:25. > :16:28.loud enough, according to most people who work in Formula One and a

:16:29. > :16:33.lot of fans around the world, and there will be a test next week, and

:16:34. > :16:38.Mercedes is going to try out a sort of megaphone device that will sit on

:16:39. > :16:42.the back of the exhaust. Most of the manufacturers have refused to even

:16:43. > :16:44.countenance the idea of fiddling with the exhaust themselves, or the

:16:45. > :16:49.combustion or anything in the engine to try and change the sound of these

:16:50. > :16:53.Formula One cars, because it would affect the competitive picture as

:16:54. > :16:58.well. But they are prepared to put some sort of application on it which

:16:59. > :17:04.will be tested next week. Hamilton, 16 laps on the tyre, 12 in this

:17:05. > :17:08.stint, look at that for consistency of pace, an amazing performance by

:17:09. > :17:12.Hamilton and Mercedes, well and truly in the groove year. And look

:17:13. > :17:18.how gentle his inputs are as he comes in, but on the throttle, winds

:17:19. > :17:22.off a little bit of lock. A bit of movement on the rear, but he caught

:17:23. > :17:26.it quite easily, progressive, small lock on the left front. You don't

:17:27. > :17:32.have to hits the apex there, you can use the camber. All nice and

:17:33. > :17:36.progressive and consistent, and the times are phenomenally quick. Jay

:17:37. > :17:41.contrast to last year, where he chewed his tyres, describing it as

:17:42. > :17:47.one of the worst races of his career. -- such a contrast. And here

:17:48. > :17:51.he is, obviously the car is much better, better balanced on the four

:17:52. > :17:56.tyres, but he is obviously learned a lot from his experiences last year,

:17:57. > :18:01.and he is driving to achieve a goal. It is not everybody's idea of

:18:02. > :18:04.Formula One, is it? Christian Horner was saying to Ben Edwards that

:18:05. > :18:08.Formula One should be a sprint race from start to finish, pushing to the

:18:09. > :18:13.limit all the way through, rather than managing fuel and tyres. Where

:18:14. > :18:17.do you stand on that? We all like the flat-out attack, but every

:18:18. > :18:22.driver in the modern age has got the same set of regulations, and they

:18:23. > :18:26.abide by the same rules. At the end of the year, the world champion is

:18:27. > :18:30.the world champion. He has done a better job than everybody else to

:18:31. > :18:35.achieve that goal, and so you can never detract away from somebody who

:18:36. > :18:36.might win this particular year. Lewis Hamilton has said his stall

:18:37. > :18:43.out, it is not his natural characteristic to try to

:18:44. > :18:51.conserve... I think we should come in, it is not safe. A Grosjean radio

:18:52. > :18:53.message from his engineer, problem with the brakes,

:18:54. > :18:57.message from his engineer, problem After Giedo van der Garde's issue,

:18:58. > :19:02.probably a completely different scenario, that is a very

:19:03. > :19:03.probably a completely different thing, because this is a very fast

:19:04. > :19:10.circuit. If you have a brake problem, the run-off areas become

:19:11. > :19:15.very small. Daniil Kvyat down at turn seven, what happened to him?

:19:16. > :19:20.Just running a bit wide, up on the grass on the outside of turn eight,

:19:21. > :19:26.climbing up towards turn nine. There he is, a few spectators down there,

:19:27. > :19:31.not a huge crowd for a Friday. Plenty of Spanish Formula One fans,

:19:32. > :19:34.they will be on Sunday, they love watching Fernando Alonso driving a

:19:35. > :19:40.Ferrari around here, but they don't love it so much on a Friday as they

:19:41. > :19:43.do at Silverstone or Montreal, where you get an absolutely packed full

:19:44. > :19:48.house even on a Friday, just because they love the whole experience of

:19:49. > :19:52.watching Formula One. The Lotus of Romain Grosjean in the pits after

:19:53. > :19:55.being told that the brakes system is not safe, they called him in. A

:19:56. > :20:02.couple of final comments on the hashtag #bbcf1, thank you very much

:20:03. > :20:07.for coming in sending us messages, we like to make this an interactive

:20:08. > :20:13.experience - a quick look at Bottas before we get on to these questions.

:20:14. > :20:21.On the medium tyre, 19 laps, a stint of 12 laps, pretty consistent, in

:20:22. > :20:25.the low 1.33s. We do not know the fuel load is concerned, but it looks

:20:26. > :20:26.a couple of seconds slower than Mercedes is doing at the moment.

:20:27. > :20:32.Again, as I Mercedes is doing at the moment.

:20:33. > :20:35.much fuel that Williams is carrying. Alexander Allan, do you think

:20:36. > :20:40.Hamilton can keep up this level for the rest of the season? Or will

:20:41. > :20:45.Rosberg steal it? It is a level of intensity that takes a lot of energy

:20:46. > :20:49.out of you, 19 races, and when you have got so much emotional and

:20:50. > :20:53.mental energy going into it, it is tiring. But when you are fighting

:20:54. > :20:57.for a world championship, the adrenaline keeps you going. Those

:20:58. > :21:02.two are going to battle it out to the end. Lewis Hamilton has won

:21:03. > :21:05.three races on the bounce, but the fact that Nico Rosberg is finishing

:21:06. > :21:10.second, the championship is never going to go one way or the other,

:21:11. > :21:16.the gap. It is going to be nip and tuck between the two of them, I

:21:17. > :21:18.think. Susie Wolff I mentioned earlier, the development

:21:19. > :21:21.think. Susie Wolff I mentioned Williams, is going to get a run in

:21:22. > :21:25.the car on Wednesday here in Barcelona, in the test that follows

:21:26. > :21:29.this Grand Prix, and she is in the pit lane with Jennie Gow. You have

:21:30. > :21:31.just been out on track having a look at the cars, the first thing I'm

:21:32. > :21:35.going to say, did at the cars, the first thing I'm

:21:36. > :21:39.Vettel at there? What other cars telling you? I was not really

:21:40. > :21:44.looking for him, I am not sure if I saw him or not, I was looking mainly

:21:45. > :21:47.at the Williams cars, because I could not hear what was happening,

:21:48. > :21:52.and it is really interesting to look at them on track and see it

:21:53. > :21:56.Driving next week, it gives me a chance to look at the different

:21:57. > :22:01.racing lines. Do you know what the plan is for you when you get in the

:22:02. > :22:07.car on Wednesday? Sorry? Do you know what the plan is? Yeah, we have

:22:08. > :22:10.quite a lot of things to test, part of the programme will depend on the

:22:11. > :22:21.leave a's day on Tuesday, quite a few things for me to do. -- Felipe.

:22:22. > :22:24.Do you have to address this test quite differently, knowing you will

:22:25. > :22:29.be out in the one as other stone and in Germany? Not really, it is

:22:30. > :22:35.important for the team, and you need to give good feedback every time you

:22:36. > :22:39.are in the car. -- you will be out in FP1 at Silverstone and in

:22:40. > :22:47.Germany? In between the two sessions, I had a chat with IndyCar

:22:48. > :22:50.driver and F1 driver Simoni Dace of Astra, and she is confident that she

:22:51. > :22:57.would like to be driving in 2015, do you see this as another female

:22:58. > :23:01.competition coming into the sport? I think it is very positive that there

:23:02. > :23:06.is another female there. She was doing a great job in America, so if

:23:07. > :23:10.she gets a chance, that would be fantastic, I will be the first one

:23:11. > :23:13.rooting for her. How difficult will it be for her? She is just tried to

:23:14. > :23:17.brake in, she has not got it be for her? She is just tried to

:23:18. > :23:22.licence, all the steps you need to take. Without a doubt, and I have

:23:23. > :23:27.taken a slightly different approach. I took one step at a time, I have to

:23:28. > :23:31.prove myself, because getting on the grid is not easy, and getting my

:23:32. > :23:35.super licence was not easy. The FIA look that every lap I had done on

:23:36. > :23:39.the track and in the simulator before they made a judgment on

:23:40. > :23:42.whether to give me a super licence. We all have to have goals, we have

:23:43. > :23:46.to keep pushing and trying to achieve things, and she has set a

:23:47. > :23:50.clear goal, and she has got to go for it. For me it is different, we

:23:51. > :23:54.have set goals every step of the way, it is just importance to do a

:23:55. > :24:00.good job in free practice one and keep racing. Thanks very much for

:24:01. > :24:04.joining us, good luck on Wednesday. Jennie Gow in the pit lane with

:24:05. > :24:08.Susie Wolff, development driver for Williams, and she will be running on

:24:09. > :24:16.Wednesday and hopefully getting some mileage, and then free practice one

:24:17. > :24:20.at Silverstone and Hockenheim, she will get 90 minutes in the car, it

:24:21. > :24:25.will be a real talking point. It certainly will, no question about

:24:26. > :24:29.it, she will do the best job she can. She has been working very hard

:24:30. > :24:33.for this for a long time, and she has already driven at Silverstone,

:24:34. > :24:37.as we know, but she is really looking forward to this next part of

:24:38. > :24:42.her career. A final question, hashtag #bbcf1, I am a Hamilton fan,

:24:43. > :24:49.but don't you think his abilities are being overshadowed by the car? I

:24:50. > :24:54.don't think that, Rosberg's radio. Slightly more wear on the left front

:24:55. > :25:01.and left rear, 50% on the front, 60% remaining on the left rear. That is

:25:02. > :25:06.basically the where, how much depth of rubber is still left on the tyre,

:25:07. > :25:10.and so he's getting that information. What you have to do is

:25:11. > :25:14.be a little bit more careful on the way you attack on the throttle so

:25:15. > :25:18.that you try to conserve it. You may be used the front tyre to turn the

:25:19. > :25:22.car a little bit more, just let it front through the apex of the corner

:25:23. > :25:27.a little bit more, try to keep the momentum. All of this is about

:25:28. > :25:31.management, but this is where the engineers are coaching the driver,

:25:32. > :25:35.giving them information - be careful of that, what's this, this is the

:25:36. > :25:39.percentage. And you need numbers, you cannot just say, conserve a

:25:40. > :25:45.little bit more, you need a number, some relationship you can work to.

:25:46. > :25:52.OK, we may have a gearbox problem, we need to box this lap, please. Oh

:25:53. > :25:56.no, Lotus had a gearbox problem with Grosjean. We have a right rear wheel

:25:57. > :25:59.no, Lotus had a gearbox problem with off Jean-Eric Vergne's car, I wonder

:26:00. > :26:05.what has happened there. The hard seems to be intact, it does not look

:26:06. > :26:09.like an accident. It was the first lap on a medium tyre, he had done

:26:10. > :26:13.his long run on the hard, he just came out of the pits, it looks like

:26:14. > :26:17.it has not attached correctly, and that is going to be a naughty boy,

:26:18. > :26:22.that will be a big problem with the stewards, because that is something

:26:23. > :26:29.they have been so strict on. I think I lost a wheel. You did, yeah! No

:26:30. > :26:33.two ways about it. Straight out of the pits, he has turned right and

:26:34. > :26:38.left, and immediately on the first time he has turned left, the right

:26:39. > :26:41.rear wheel has disappeared. Something the FIA take very

:26:42. > :26:47.seriously after the wheel came off Mark Webber's car in Germany last

:26:48. > :26:50.year, hitting one of the cameramen in the plane. Tom Clarkson was

:26:51. > :26:55.explaining that is why any media down there have to wear these

:26:56. > :27:01.special babes. We have had it once this season already, was it

:27:02. > :27:06.Williams? They were fined? That was last year in Japan, they were fined

:27:07. > :27:13.50,000 roubles for an unsafe relief. That was into Spoon: ,

:27:14. > :27:22.something that, you know, there is a lot of momentum behind it. -- Spoon

:27:23. > :27:27.corner. As he turns left, sorry, it is the second car, it has already

:27:28. > :27:34.came off by this point. The wheel runs behind him. Someone has had it

:27:35. > :27:39.this year, though. The driver got points on their licence as well as a

:27:40. > :27:49.result of it. Looking at the replay of Rosberg, he is looking...

:27:50. > :27:55.Rosberg was not particularly close, but he was close enough to see the

:27:56. > :28:01.incident. Ricciardo Haddad, Daniel Ricciardo. It was a double whammy

:28:02. > :28:06.for him. Releasing in an unsafe condition, plus he got a drop of ten

:28:07. > :28:12.grid positions as well. That is it, the wheel did not come off, he

:28:13. > :28:15.stopped halfway down the pit lane. That was enough for him to get that

:28:16. > :28:19.heavy duty penalty. No wonder the Toro Rosso mechanics look a bit

:28:20. > :28:26.glum, because they are going to be having some very angry stewards

:28:27. > :28:29.wanting to talk to them. That is Jean-Eric Vergne's race engineer,

:28:30. > :28:34.who joined from Williams at the end of last year. He was a senior

:28:35. > :28:41.operations engineer at Williams. Rob Smedley came in, Jacob Andreasen, a

:28:42. > :28:45.very experienced track engineer, and he is also working in management,

:28:46. > :28:50.linking up between the operational side of the racing team and the

:28:51. > :28:54.design side. That is what Rob Smedley is doing, something he is

:28:55. > :28:57.extremely well suited to as an operations engineer, having worked

:28:58. > :29:01.with Massa for many years, knowing what it is like at the sharp end of

:29:02. > :29:05.the racetrack, but also being able to speak the same language as the

:29:06. > :29:09.boffins in the wind tunnel and make sure there is a throughput of new

:29:10. > :29:17.parts. Certainly, he seems to have been very well received already at

:29:18. > :29:19.Williams, are very pleased to have got him - he is already making a

:29:20. > :29:22.difference in terms of parts coming through to the car. Into the final

:29:23. > :29:26.minute of free practice, the story is not hard to discern - Lewis

:29:27. > :29:28.Hamilton, winner of the last three Grands Prix on the bounce, is the

:29:29. > :29:34.fastest man on the qualifying simulationss, and he has a stunning

:29:35. > :29:40.race pace. He is going to take some beating this this weekend.

:29:41. > :29:44.groove, in championship mode, thinking about notching

:29:45. > :29:47.groove, in championship mode, putting the championship out of

:29:48. > :29:50.reach of his team-mate, Rosberg, and anyone else for that

:29:51. > :29:54.reach of his team-mate, Rosberg, and seconds left on

:29:55. > :29:56.reach of his team-mate, Rosberg, and fastest from Rosberg. He

:29:57. > :29:59.reach of his team-mate, Rosberg, and to the harder of the two

:30:00. > :30:06.reach of his team-mate, Rosberg, and as he goes through, 1:30.8 on the

:30:07. > :30:10.hard tyre. The superbly quick long run he did was on the medium, but

:30:11. > :30:16.now both he and Rosberg have pitted quickly, as has Ricciardo, and gone

:30:17. > :30:18.on to the heart. Alonso, who was on the medium, Surrey, on the hard, has

:30:19. > :30:32.gone on to the medium. Lewis Hamilton has gone to the top

:30:33. > :30:41.of the sheet of the fastest speed, 335 an hour. That is about 206mph.

:30:42. > :30:44.Max Chilton was struggling when he passed him. I don't know what the

:30:45. > :30:52.problem is. But we think he has gone off in turn four. At the top of the

:30:53. > :30:54.hill he has gone through the long right-hander and has gone on for

:30:55. > :31:00.whatever Royal Bank. -- raefrest right-hander and has gone on for

:31:01. > :31:04.whatever reason. Everything is OK. He had engine problems earlier on.

:31:05. > :31:06.whatever reason. Everything is OK. He was in and out of the

:31:07. > :31:11.whatever reason. Everything is OK. orders of the race engineers as his

:31:12. > :31:16.parents watch on. They have taken down force and taken some wing out

:31:17. > :31:22.of the Mercedes to increase the straight line speed. But they're

:31:23. > :31:24.getting 335 kilometres an hour on the straight. That

:31:25. > :31:27.getting 335 kilometres an hour on speed around here. It certainly is.

:31:28. > :31:30.It is no question at all that the cars have been very quick on

:31:31. > :31:30.It is no question at all that the speeds, but it proves again that

:31:31. > :31:35.there is not a weak area speeds, but it proves again that

:31:36. > :31:40.sort of organisation structure, team, drivers. The long

:31:41. > :31:44.sort of organisation structure, summarise, it is all about Mercedes,

:31:45. > :31:48.Lewis Hamilton was fantastically quick. He had an advantage over Nico

:31:49. > :31:52.Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo rick was very good. He had a good run.

:31:53. > :31:53.You can expect Sebastian Vettel to be up there tomorrow as well.

:31:54. > :31:58.Fernando Alonso was probably be up there tomorrow as well.

:31:59. > :32:00.Raikkonen, but this is be up there tomorrow as well.

:32:01. > :32:06.Raikkonen has been to Fernando Alonso all season. So he

:32:07. > :32:10.Raikkonen has been to Fernando that a bit of a gap. Half a second

:32:11. > :32:15.to the McLarens of Magnussen and Button. Massa was eighth for

:32:16. > :32:21.Williams. They seem to have lost ground. But you can't tell based on

:32:22. > :32:26.fuel loads. Pastor Maldonado is in ninth, although he had a gear box

:32:27. > :32:29.problem. Nico Hulkenberg of Force India lost ground with the updates

:32:30. > :32:36.that have been brought to the race. We will find out tomorrow.

:32:37. > :32:45.Chilton had all kinds of problems and ended up in the gravel track.

:32:46. > :32:52.Kobayashi was 20th with Ericsson in 21st and Sebastian Vettel, who has

:32:53. > :32:56.only done four laps on the first day of practice in Barcelona, where the

:32:57. > :32:59.story is if anybody came here thinking Mercedes may have lost a

:33:00. > :33:06.little ground and there was a chance to get closer to them. Judging by

:33:07. > :33:12.the performance of Lewis Hamilton in qualifying simulation, long runs and

:33:13. > :33:16.straight line speed, they have moved further ahead. Lewis Hamilton

:33:17. > :33:21.dominates. Two practice sessions and twice Lewis Hamilton tops the time

:33:22. > :33:25.sheet, Red Bull have another strong performance by Daniel Ricciardo but

:33:26. > :33:29.Sebastian Vettel reduced to being a spectator. We now the Ferrari boss

:33:30. > :33:36.is in the building here, pushing on Ferrari and trying to appease

:33:37. > :33:42.Fernando Alonso. You would have to say that Mercedes are looking

:33:43. > :33:49.strong. I'm back tomorrow with Inside F1. Free practice is live on

:33:50. > :33:53.BBC1 tomorrow. And we have live for qualifying.

:33:54. > :34:07.Thank you for your company today. Goodbye.

:34:08. > :34:10.Does anybody know exactly what they're eating?

:34:11. > :34:16.When these birds are gone, what happens to this place?
