:01:06. > :01:12.Hello and, after four fly away races, the Formula One paddock is

:01:13. > :01:14.firmly parked in Barcelona. Welcome to qualifying from the Circuit de

:01:15. > :01:19.Catalunya for the Spanish Grand Prix, and today we will start the

:01:20. > :01:24.show with a tribute to Ayrton Senna. May the 1st mark the 20th

:01:25. > :01:29.anniversary of his death, the desperately sad weekend in a mother.

:01:30. > :01:33.Eddie Jordan returned to the track to reflect on the loss of a friend

:01:34. > :01:40.and colleague and the weekend that changed Formula One.

:01:41. > :01:49.The heart of Formula One, a place we love, but also a place with painful

:01:50. > :01:55.memories. There are days that leaves scars. It began here. Friday

:01:56. > :02:02.practice, Rubens Barrichello, my driver, had a most appalling

:02:03. > :02:07.accident at 160 mph. He was unconscious but escaped with nothing

:02:08. > :02:12.more than a broken nose. That was modern Formula One. Big accident, no

:02:13. > :02:20.harm done! But the next day, in qualifying, that is when it all

:02:21. > :02:24.changed. Imola lost control at 190 mph and went straight into a

:02:25. > :02:31.concrete barrier which took his life. -- Ratzenburger. Saturday

:02:32. > :02:39.turned agonisingly into Sunday, made her first 1994. One of the worlds

:02:40. > :02:48.greatest motor racing drivers has died after a crash at the San Reno

:02:49. > :02:52.Grand Prix... He was 34. He was a hero, the ultimate racing driver,

:02:53. > :02:58.right up to the moment that he lost his life. It was shocking that it

:02:59. > :03:03.was him, because it is like the sun falling from the sky. He was like

:03:04. > :03:09.above everything. The body arrived at the airport in the morning... He

:03:10. > :03:19.was the pride of his country and is being mourned as such. It was like a

:03:20. > :03:22.state funeral. You could see what it meant for the whole country. If he

:03:23. > :03:28.had known how has life would unfold, he wouldn't have changed

:03:29. > :03:38.anything. I start with four years old in go-kart, and I needed to get

:03:39. > :03:42.to Formula One. I first came across Ayrton Senna at the beginning of

:03:43. > :03:47.1982. I offered him a drive in our Formula 3 car. I still have the

:03:48. > :03:52.sheet from the test day, 54.07, unbelievably fast times. I tried so

:03:53. > :04:01.hard to sign him for the following year. Sadly that wasn't to happen.

:04:02. > :04:07.He had won every championship that he entered, and then he moved up to

:04:08. > :04:13.F3 and he just strolled around the place. Taking the chequered flag,

:04:14. > :04:17.Ayrton Senna wins for the ten season, and he is naturally

:04:18. > :04:21.overjoyed... I offered to pay for his career in return for an option.

:04:22. > :04:28.I was somewhat surprised when he said no. We are talking about

:04:29. > :04:32.driving in Formula One, I was pretty excited, I knew he was a good

:04:33. > :04:43.prospect. I won't pretend I knew how good. When it is wet, it equalises

:04:44. > :04:47.the field, and that was a notoriously terrible car to drive.

:04:48. > :04:51.The wet is where the talent shows, and the Senate is very talented

:04:52. > :04:57.indeed. It goes without saying that he can drive well, but it is about

:04:58. > :05:05.what they can add to that. He had this in aid ability to know what is

:05:06. > :05:13.going on. He dragged that car up the grid into second. He will

:05:14. > :05:19.undoubtedly be a world champion of the future. Then he was gone to

:05:20. > :05:26.Lotus. Now he could compete with the best. This usually totally

:05:27. > :05:29.unflappable Brazilian is, for once, absolutely beside himself! Soon he

:05:30. > :05:37.was changing team colours again into the red and white of McLaren. He was

:05:38. > :05:44.passionate about driving, he derived more pleasure from it than any

:05:45. > :05:49.driver I knew. He explained that he did it with a slower motion than the

:05:50. > :05:54.rest of us, he had more time to do every corner with perfection. He was

:05:55. > :05:59.very, very special behind the wheel, and he wasn't aggressive with the

:06:00. > :06:05.wheel at all. He just knew how to carry the momentum through the

:06:06. > :06:07.corner. On board with him through Monaco, things like that, truly

:06:08. > :06:27.special things to watch. Out of the corner, the engine did

:06:28. > :06:31.not feel good, so we changed the mixture, a little bit richer, and

:06:32. > :06:37.you could see that he felt an improvement. I tried even a step

:06:38. > :06:42.more and it was better. I couldn't change one of these in the lap, and

:06:43. > :06:48.he was putting it on pole position. This is why he was better than all

:06:49. > :06:56.of us. The second chicane is kind of bumpy. He was the first guy I met

:06:57. > :07:01.who wasn't using 100% of his mental capacity to drive the car. There was

:07:02. > :07:05.this capacity that allowed him to analyse and tell you what he thought

:07:06. > :07:14.was going on that allowed you to try and make the car better. It really

:07:15. > :07:20.was something special. He had all these sheets of every lap, he was

:07:21. > :07:27.going after the race, going through every lap of every tribe. With

:07:28. > :07:34.McLaren for six years, he was in a dominant period, bearing in mind we

:07:35. > :07:52.have highly dominant -- talented drivers.

:07:53. > :08:00.Ayrton Senna was such an icon in our sport, and I certainly felt that. So

:08:01. > :08:04.much so that I offered him 50% of Jordan Grand Prix free of charge to

:08:05. > :08:08.come and join me, because I believed, truthfully, that with him

:08:09. > :08:12.by my side, it would be a much stronger team, more professional,

:08:13. > :08:18.more successful and much better off financially. He was the partner I

:08:19. > :08:22.desperately needed. In his early years in Formula 3, I've seen the

:08:23. > :08:27.ruthlessness in Ayrton. No question he felt he had a God-given right to

:08:28. > :08:35.win. Win at all costs, a reckless self belief. Alain Prost takes the

:08:36. > :08:39.lead, he has taken the advantage, Senna is trying to go through on the

:08:40. > :08:45.inside, and it has happened immediately, this is amazing!

:08:46. > :08:51.Ayrton has a small problem. He thinks that he can't kill himself,

:08:52. > :08:56.because he believes in God, and I think it is very dangerous. He was

:08:57. > :09:02.an animal in the car, fighting, people say he was reckless,

:09:03. > :09:06.dangerous or whatever. You either commit yourself as a professional

:09:07. > :09:12.racing driver with a desire to win races, all you come second, third or

:09:13. > :09:18.fifth. And I have no desire to come third or fifth. I race to win. He

:09:19. > :09:27.was very intelligent, and inside he was tough. Very emotional Latin, the

:09:28. > :09:31.emotion in the car is so strong, and then on the other side he was very

:09:32. > :09:43.philosophical, very quiet, very nice, very gentle. 1992, Spa. Ayrton

:09:44. > :09:46.risks his life, stops and runs across the track, turning of the

:09:47. > :09:55.engine to prevent a fire, Eric says it saved his life. The cruel Senna,

:09:56. > :09:59.the compassionate Ayrton. I saw the compassionate man, the man with a

:10:00. > :10:03.huge amount of presence when he walked in the door. You know, when

:10:04. > :10:10.Ayrton walked in, you knew he was there. He was an engaging guy to

:10:11. > :10:20.talk to. Before qualifying, he used to read a couple of lines from the

:10:21. > :10:27.Bible. I was reading playboy, I would say, do you want to come over

:10:28. > :10:35.and read a little bit of Playboy? I must have been reading the wrong

:10:36. > :10:39.stuff! By 1991, he was the youngest ever three-time world champion, but

:10:40. > :10:44.then two years without success, he was on the move again, to the now

:10:45. > :10:54.successful Williams team. Unfortunately, the Williams of that

:10:55. > :11:00.era wasn't a very good car, and Ayrton's determination and ability

:11:01. > :11:08.meant he was driving that car harder than it was capable of. Senna has

:11:09. > :11:14.lasted. He has pushed himself to a mistake. -- lost it.

:11:15. > :11:30.And so we come back here, Imola. May the 1st 1994.

:11:31. > :11:37.He was a worried man, certainly, going into that Imola weekend. There

:11:38. > :11:45.was a lot going on. Roland's accident was something deeply

:11:46. > :11:50.upsetting. He wasn't so happy, he was talking to the GPDA all the

:11:51. > :11:59.time, saying that safety has to grow and this and that. He was far more

:12:00. > :12:06.quiet than normal. You could see he was thinking all the time. I

:12:07. > :12:12.remember, on Sunday, walking to the drivers' briefing, and he said, next

:12:13. > :12:18.week we need to talk about improving safety. It is warm, track conditions

:12:19. > :12:22.are ideal, and no disguising the fact that after two none finishes

:12:23. > :12:27.today is the day that Ayrton Senna must make his first move in this

:12:28. > :12:34.1994 world championship. -- non-finishers. Go! And Senna pulls

:12:35. > :12:39.away... On the flag drops, he is completely focused. I don't think

:12:40. > :12:48.any of that background stuff contributed to how he drove the car.

:12:49. > :12:56.Senna, my goodness! What on earth happened there?! I was coming out of

:12:57. > :13:04.the corner, he was crashing into the wall, and I looked, and I thought,

:13:05. > :13:10.it is OK. I saw the accident, I knew it was a bad accident, but he will

:13:11. > :13:16.be OK. We couldn't see very much, it's getting so many conflicting

:13:17. > :13:32.messages. All I can remember is the noise. I had this feeling that his

:13:33. > :13:39.soul was going out. To this day, such a loss. Such a waste.

:13:40. > :13:50.A measure of the man - after the impact here, they found in his car

:13:51. > :13:52.and Austrian flag. He was going to wave it for Roland Ratzenburger at

:13:53. > :14:04.the end of the race. He certainly was a genius. But

:14:05. > :14:09.that's genius died here at Imola on the first weekend of May 1994. Yes,

:14:10. > :14:22.there are places and dates that leave a scar.

:14:23. > :14:42.?LINEBREAK It is nice, also, it makes me proud, a little bit, I must

:14:43. > :14:47.say. He was a Superman, superdedicated to

:14:48. > :14:53.his family, a super driver and a super friend.

:14:54. > :14:59.He was definitely up will in the very top bracket of the very top

:15:00. > :15:04.drivers in the history of modern Formula One.

:15:05. > :15:12.If not the greatest, then then very arguably one of the greatest.

:15:13. > :15:16.I will never know, wouldn't it be great to get all these guys

:15:17. > :15:24.together, and have a big race in heaven, maybe.

:15:25. > :15:32.All the guys, including Michael Schumacher, Vettel, there was

:15:33. > :15:44.another layer, and there was just one guy and that was Ayrton Senna.

:15:45. > :15:50.Such powerful images and thought provoking comments. A wonderful

:15:51. > :15:55.piece there on Ayrton Senna, and one of them said he was better than the

:15:56. > :16:00.rest. Eddie, difficult for you to watch that, do you agree? He was

:16:01. > :16:05.perfect. That was a really nice piece. Very well made. Very

:16:06. > :16:12.sensitive and I think everyone said how they felt. Gerhard was amazing,

:16:13. > :16:15.he was one step above. It was a desperately tragic weekend all

:16:16. > :16:19.round, which you covered there, but losing Rowland as well, who you knew

:16:20. > :16:25.very well. Rowland came in a different way, he was not the Meg

:16:26. > :16:29.star that air on the was and every step air on the took it was

:16:30. > :16:33.calculated. Rowland had been in Japan, he had been a hard-working

:16:34. > :16:39.professional young driver, Austrian, hugely well liked in the paddock and

:16:40. > :16:45.amazing, the girls adored him, he was so good looking. Everyone's

:16:46. > :16:49.dream is to come Formula One if they want to become a racing driving

:16:50. > :16:53.driver and Roland Ratzenberger was taken the day before. When I

:16:54. > :16:57.mentioned about the flag in air on the's car, that was the measure of

:16:58. > :17:00.him but the respect he had for Roland Ratzenberger who was a great

:17:01. > :17:06.talent and would have gone on to good things I believe. David, Eddie

:17:07. > :17:11.saying all drivers want to be in Formula One. The impact of Ayrton

:17:12. > :17:15.Senna's death had an impact on you It is 20 years ago I made my debut

:17:16. > :17:26.here in Barcelona, the team race with only one car in Monaco which

:17:27. > :17:35.was the following after it. Mola. Damon went on to win the Spanish

:17:36. > :17:38.Grand Prix, there was a huge out pouring of emotion that weekend. It

:17:39. > :17:42.must have been really difficult, and especially for you, I would have

:17:43. > :17:47.thought. It changed the weekend. It changed Formula One forever in terms

:17:48. > :17:52.of safety as well. We were all for the right reasons everyone kept

:17:53. > :17:56.quiet but I remember going within a couple of race, Max Mosley was

:17:57. > :18:01.dogmatic about it, this is what you will do, to change, higher cockpit,

:18:02. > :18:05.making sure deflection, what happened with the wheel and tethers

:18:06. > :18:09.and thing, I think was all positive because it has given him, us the

:18:10. > :18:14.longevity, you can never be sure in this business but we have had a long

:18:15. > :18:21.run of non-fatalities in the sport, and a lot of that is the FIA, a lot

:18:22. > :18:24.is to Max Mosley. As a result of the sad passing of Roland Ratzenberger

:18:25. > :18:29.and Ayrton Senna, they paid the price. The ultimate price. 20 years

:18:30. > :18:33.ago of course on May 1st. May I say welcome back, it very nice to have

:18:34. > :18:36.him back on screen, isn't it. The Eddie. Loads has been going on of

:18:37. > :18:43.course in Formula One, let us catch up with the news now, with Lee.

:18:44. > :18:51.Lewis Hamilton has won three out of the four Grand Prix. He is not worry

:18:52. > :18:55.about the other teams, he says Mercedes is doing everything to win

:18:56. > :19:01.both Championships We will throw the bathtub. We will keep pushing and

:19:02. > :19:05.try to improve, and do better, but, yeah, whatever they give we will

:19:06. > :19:09.give back just as much if not more. We want that competition, we want

:19:10. > :19:13.people to be pushing and we want to be able to fight peep. Despite his

:19:14. > :19:17.race wins it is his team-mate Rosberg who sits at the top of the

:19:18. > :19:21.Championship. He is not ready to hand over that top spot I need to

:19:22. > :19:27.change the momentum round, he has had the right momentum to him, and

:19:28. > :19:30.just like last year, it went to and from us, I need to change it round

:19:31. > :19:36.and bring it bag on my side and get the win. At the end of last season

:19:37. > :19:39.Fernando Alonso said Sebastian Vettel would be measured when he has

:19:40. > :19:44.the same car as everyone else and not driving a dominating car. Now,

:19:45. > :19:50.after four tricky races for German Alonso has been giving his opinion

:19:51. > :19:57.again. It has not empressed people like he did in the past, you know, I

:19:58. > :20:04.think this year -- impressed. In the four race, three or four, Ricciardo

:20:05. > :20:08.was quicker than Sebastian, that was a surprise for everybody and also

:20:09. > :20:13.for him I guess. Alonso hasn't won a race since this one last season.

:20:14. > :20:18.Vettel's win was this year but his week hasn't got off to a good start.

:20:19. > :20:22.Yesterday he only managed four laps before an electrical failure meant

:20:23. > :20:26.he couldn't run any more. The chassis, we had to change it.

:20:27. > :20:31.Couldn't go out again, a lost a day but should be fine. Jenson Button's

:20:32. > :20:36.McLaren better be quicker than in China, there is no way he wants to

:20:37. > :20:40.finish outside of the top ten. We have up grades, most cars do, but we

:20:41. > :20:44.never know how much. Last rate was a tough one for us, even without up

:20:45. > :20:48.grades, it would be quicker because of the lay out of the circuit. We

:20:49. > :20:55.have hope we make a slight improvement. I don't want to finish

:20:56. > :20:59.11th again. The trial of Bernie Ecclestone got under way. In the

:21:00. > :21:04.meantime, it seems that Ecclestone has done a race in Azerbaijan, it is

:21:05. > :21:09.expected to be on the calendar next season or in 20166789 Azerbaijan,

:21:10. > :21:14.what do you any? Will it happen? I think it is a race too many,

:21:15. > :21:18.perhaps, and you know, quick succession of new race, I think we

:21:19. > :21:22.need to think carefully about Abba January when it comes, financially

:21:23. > :21:27.fine but I would prefer to be concentrating efforts to get into

:21:28. > :21:31.New York or somewhere like that which had greater commercial

:21:32. > :21:34.opportunity, that is my view. Let us wait to see. Christian Horner has

:21:35. > :21:39.managed to join us. Thank you. We heard in the news there, that Seb is

:21:40. > :21:44.having a hard time, we know he has had a hard time this season. What

:21:45. > :21:49.seems to be the trouble? Daniil is handling the car well. Is it

:21:50. > :21:54.anything the way with Sebastian join drives the car It is character

:21:55. > :21:58.building. He hasn't had the feel for the car for the way he drives it. It

:21:59. > :22:02.is not talking the way he wants it. A lot is to do with the engine, the

:22:03. > :22:07.way it is performing under braking, we have made changes I think are

:22:08. > :22:11.going to help. Hopefully, despite missing yesterday, hopefully he can

:22:12. > :22:15.have a strong day. How much of that you mention about braking, how much

:22:16. > :22:21.is that because of the recoverable part of the energies, you are

:22:22. > :22:25.harvesting 160 Haass power, is that what is giving the difficulty? That

:22:26. > :22:30.is what is giving him the seven say, it is not consistent through the

:22:31. > :22:33.braking zone. He delivers his lap time on the corner, when the car is

:22:34. > :22:42.not giving him the signals he is used to or wanting, that is

:22:43. > :22:47.unsettling him. You end up using the tyre more. You said about the

:22:48. > :22:51.engine, I want to pick that up. How much of a problem to you at Red Bull

:22:52. > :22:55.is the fact that other teams are not paying their bills at Renault, how

:22:56. > :23:00.is that affected the development that could be going to you, except

:23:01. > :23:04.it is costing the team money? Hopefully nothing. We had a meeting

:23:05. > :23:08.at the beginning of the year. They said rest assure, representative foe

:23:09. > :23:14.are in this to compete. To challenge Mercedes and to win, and you know,

:23:15. > :23:18.so we have been assured that you know, other customers not paying

:23:19. > :23:21.their way won't affect development or performance in in way. Do you

:23:22. > :23:25.feel as though the changes you were talking about will make a step

:23:26. > :23:30.towards a step closer to Mercedes this weekend, or are we still going

:23:31. > :23:35.to have to wait longer? We are still a long way away. Lewis looked

:23:36. > :23:39.competitive yesterday. He looked as though he has Nico covered. Were

:23:40. > :23:43.probably three-quarters of a second off their pace. Things can change

:23:44. > :23:46.round quickly and if we can unleash performance, unleash a bit of

:23:47. > :23:50.potential from the car as well, and Sebastian gets back in form, then,

:23:51. > :23:55.yes, we can hopefully take the fight to them. Thank you very much. Let us

:23:56. > :23:59.look at the Championship there, and see where Sebastian is sitting on

:24:00. > :24:02.that table. So after four races, coming into the Spanish Grand Prix.

:24:03. > :24:16.Sebastian Vettel is in fifth. Mercedes Rosberg heads the table

:24:17. > :24:20.with Lewis Hamilton fast closing the gap. Four points now the difference.

:24:21. > :24:26.Fernando Alonso is the best of the rest in third, and Nico Hulkenberg

:24:27. > :24:30.is a very credible fourth. Red Bull are up to second in the Constructors

:24:31. > :24:34.Championship with Force India three points behind in third. With four

:24:35. > :24:42.straight victories Mercedes are definitely the team to beat.

:24:43. > :24:46.Talks of Mercedes then, do you think they can maintain the momentum, are

:24:47. > :24:52.they going to dominate all season? Is anyone going to catch them? I

:24:53. > :24:55.don't want to put out signals but there are very few teams who can

:24:56. > :24:59.match them. They have a wonderful engine, they have a great team, this

:25:00. > :25:02.is not just the start of the year, they set their stall out a

:25:03. > :25:07.year-and-a-half ago, that was started by trying to lure and

:25:08. > :25:10.convince Lewis Hamilton to come to their team. They were successful,

:25:11. > :25:15.they are getting the reward for it now We have had a break since China,

:25:16. > :25:22.two effectively three week, who do you think that will benefitted most?

:25:23. > :25:25.In real terms the small teams more, because the logistics of getting

:25:26. > :25:32.from their factories to hear, the big teams are geared up in the same

:25:33. > :25:35.way as Barcelona, it becomes more cost effective drivering the up

:25:36. > :25:39.grades you have to these European race, so just the way Formula One

:25:40. > :25:42.operates, the large teams, it doesn't matter where in the world

:25:43. > :25:45.they are having the race, you know, you have to physically manufacture

:25:46. > :25:50.the part and then it a question of how long does it take to fly to it

:25:51. > :25:55.the race track. We have lots of #u7 dates here. Alan can tell us more.

:25:56. > :25:58.Barcelona, nay started the European season in a place where teams have

:25:59. > :26:02.brought all of their up grades, this season is no exception, we start off

:26:03. > :26:06.with Ferrari, a team that has not been at the top of their game. And

:26:07. > :26:10.they have been working on front and rear wing assemblies. Now as we come

:26:11. > :26:13.in here this is a pit-stop for Fernando Alonso in free practise one

:26:14. > :26:17.where they were changing the wheel. I will stop it and zoom in on the

:26:18. > :26:22.rear of the car. We can see it is a twin element vertical support, in

:26:23. > :26:25.Kimi Raikkonen's car they were trying a single element. On the

:26:26. > :26:27.front wing they were changing between the two to work out what was

:26:28. > :26:31.best. Because they were looking at this

:26:32. > :26:36.little slot gap here, on the front inner edge, and they were going

:26:37. > :26:42.between one and two. Now, those have aerodynamic gains,

:26:43. > :26:47.it has a penalty of more drag. They are not the fastest on the straits

:26:48. > :26:50.so we have to wait to see which one they collect. Next time is William,

:26:51. > :26:54.they have been doing very well this season. They have got some tickles

:26:55. > :26:59.on the front and rear wing end plate. For them it's a packaging

:27:00. > :27:04.change, they have managed to redesign the raid away dos which are

:27:05. > :27:10.Larger, and then package the side pods round them to be neater. That

:27:11. > :27:17.gives better aerodynamics and this circuit is about aerodynamic

:27:18. > :27:20.efficiency. Red Bull. There is no question aerodynamically they are

:27:21. > :27:24.going to be improving every race, for these guys it is at the back of

:27:25. > :27:27.the car. The engine and engine recovery system, that is where they

:27:28. > :27:31.have done most of their work. They feel with Renault's support they

:27:32. > :27:35.have a big improvement for this weekend.

:27:36. > :27:39.Now, on to Mercedes, the team that is leading the battle. As Lewis

:27:40. > :27:43.Hamilton said yesterday if they throw their kitchen sink we will

:27:44. > :27:48.throw the bathtub at them. They will do it slow and gentle. On the front

:27:49. > :27:57.wing they have a bit of a revision on inner edge, they have got changes

:27:58. > :28:01.to the bargeboards and gone back more neatly packaged. The biggest

:28:02. > :28:05.single gain comes from Sauber, a team that struggled at the being of

:28:06. > :28:09.the year. The car was overweight. The drivers were complaining. One of

:28:10. > :28:15.their drivers drove in Bahrain without a drinks bottle. This car

:28:16. > :28:20.they have taken 1 kilograms out of the car overall. They are now at the

:28:21. > :28:27.position where they are on the weight limit. -- 15 kilograms.

:28:28. > :28:30.Adrian Sutil, due to his size is 12 kilos overweight. Everybody is

:28:31. > :28:34.pushing, everybody is developing every race, but it's a moving

:28:35. > :28:37.target. If you are at the front, you can be more relax. If you are at the

:28:38. > :28:42.back you have double the ground to make up.

:28:43. > :28:48.Eddie, everybody is trying to close that gap. Who in your mind hasn't

:28:49. > :28:52.really maximised their chances of getting this year really going, in

:28:53. > :28:56.terms of closing the gap? Well we talk about Vettel, we talk about

:28:57. > :29:01.Alonso, all the established drivers but the ones who have caught my eye

:29:02. > :29:04.are the younger ones. I love what Perez has done. I long what

:29:05. > :29:07.Magnussen has done and more especially Ricciardo, he has been

:29:08. > :29:11.the real Dahling of the Formula One paddock this season so far, and

:29:12. > :29:14.those who have maximised their opportunities probably Hulkenberg,

:29:15. > :29:19.he is the one who is sitting up there, he is always there, there

:29:20. > :29:24.abouts and he justified that label as a potential World Champion. What

:29:25. > :29:27.about the teams now that are in this effective space race to the end of

:29:28. > :29:30.the season. Do you feel as though we haven't seen what we felt we would

:29:31. > :29:34.see from Williams, is that still to come? They may have just missed that

:29:35. > :29:40.little opportunity, they were so quick in testing, they looked so

:29:41. > :29:47.good. Very strong, has he lost that little window of opportunity? I hope

:29:48. > :29:57.not, but maybe they will rue the day they didn't maximise. A few mistakes

:29:58. > :30:00.in the pit lane which we hope have been ironed out, but they are very

:30:01. > :30:08.positive in that garage, a different vibe. News bonsai, I love the retro

:30:09. > :30:15.style, fantastic, love it. -- new sponsor. Force India? I think they

:30:16. > :30:18.have come of age, much stronger. They have got two outstanding

:30:19. > :30:22.drivers, the car looks very good, they are taking advantage. Let's be

:30:23. > :30:26.very clear, they have a hidden advantage with that engine package,

:30:27. > :30:30.because Mercedes is by far the strongest of the runners at the

:30:31. > :30:34.moment. I am not sure the level of engine power that they have got,

:30:35. > :30:39.compared to the main team, but let's assume it is a couple of percent, it

:30:40. > :30:43.is still very strong. They need to keep the push going, but the likes

:30:44. > :30:48.of Red Bull and Ferrari will be catching them up. You talked about

:30:49. > :30:51.Magnussen earlier, absolutely brilliant in Australia, taking

:30:52. > :30:58.second place, and we all thought, here we go, a rookie, superb, and

:30:59. > :31:02.then it seems as though he has crashed, what is going on at

:31:03. > :31:06.McLaren? McLaren have not scored points in the last couple of races,

:31:07. > :31:11.and after the first race, I thought, wow, they are back with a bang. They

:31:12. > :31:16.didn't score a podium last year, then a double podium, what was

:31:17. > :31:20.happening here? I was thinking of the McLaren of old. We have not seen

:31:21. > :31:24.that in the last couple of races, and I didn't quite like the fact

:31:25. > :31:28.that Jenson, who wants to go and push on with the potential of being

:31:29. > :31:32.world champion again, he was critical. He said a brand-new driver

:31:33. > :31:37.cost the team a tense or something like that, I cannot quite under the

:31:38. > :31:41.words he used, but he was saying, maybe we would be better off with a

:31:42. > :31:45.more experienced driver, instead of having to nursemaid, I suppose, and

:31:46. > :31:50.in real terms I suppose he was saying that he is trying to learn

:31:51. > :31:54.too quickly. A few drivers with a few problems this weekend, including

:31:55. > :31:58.Jenson, who has been struggling with downforce, and we talked about

:31:59. > :32:03.Sebastian Vettel. Tom is in the pit lane, what is the latest add Red

:32:04. > :32:08.Bull? Yes, Suzi, drivers having problems all week end, but not more

:32:09. > :32:12.than Sebastian Vettel, who goes into qualifying having completed only 24

:32:13. > :32:16.laps all weekend, 20 of those in final practice this morning.

:32:17. > :32:21.Yesterday his running was curtailed by a wiring loom problem after a

:32:22. > :32:26.problem in the morning, and he never got out again. When he did get out

:32:27. > :32:29.today, he was trying to condense yesterday's three hours of running

:32:30. > :32:33.into just one hour, and he was not a happy bunny, complaining of a

:32:34. > :32:36.balance problem with this car. He has a new front wing, which will

:32:37. > :32:40.have altered the balance, but a lot of the problem is coming from what

:32:41. > :32:44.we have got up here, a beautiful sunny day in bars alone. We have

:32:45. > :32:49.very dark asphalt, so during the middle of the day, the temperatures

:32:50. > :32:53.ramped up very quickly, and already the track temperature is nearly 20

:32:54. > :32:58.degrees hotter than it was at the end of practice this morning. A lot

:32:59. > :33:01.of the teams, all of the teams are going to be chasing the track

:33:02. > :33:05.conditions this afternoon, and according to Vettel it will be

:33:06. > :33:11.difficult for everyone to keep their tyres alive for a whole qualifying

:33:12. > :33:14.lap. When we get to the twisty section at the end of the lap,

:33:15. > :33:19.expect to see the cars dancing about. Lotus are looking more

:33:20. > :33:22.competitive, both of their cars in the top ten in practice, although

:33:23. > :33:28.there have been a few gearbox niggles. Let's hope they get a clear

:33:29. > :33:33.run to show what their car can do. Certainly loads to look out for this

:33:34. > :33:37.weekend, particularly in qualifying, Eddie. Lotus, perhaps on the up,

:33:38. > :33:43.which is good to see, they were fantastic last year. They work, and

:33:44. > :33:49.I have a sneaking feeling that the way Brenna were talking, and I don't

:33:50. > :33:52.want to say which deem it is, but there are a lot of question marks

:33:53. > :34:00.about 18 not paying the bills. -- Renault. You can always stay in

:34:01. > :34:02.touch with Formula One and all the news if you want to download the

:34:03. > :34:18.free BBC Sport app. When I think about it, there has

:34:19. > :34:22.been so much that has happened this year and in the first few races, we

:34:23. > :34:27.have lost Martin Whitmarsh, Stefano Domenicali, so you know, it is all

:34:28. > :34:33.change on the management front, isn't it? A lot of teams are under a

:34:34. > :34:38.lot of pressure, and that is not going to change. Time for Q1, David

:34:39. > :35:02.and Ben are your commentary team. The circuit of Barcelona, awaiting

:35:03. > :35:06.the start of qualifying where thousands of pairs of eyes will be

:35:07. > :35:09.glued to the progress of the number 14 Ferrari of Fernando Alonso, but

:35:10. > :35:13.it would take a minor miracle for him to beat the Sale East today.

:35:14. > :35:23.Around five has brought the team is much closer to their factories. --

:35:24. > :35:26.to beat the Mercedes. This weekend will see the 24th running of the

:35:27. > :35:32.Spanish Grand Prix on this track, just under three miles long with 16

:35:33. > :35:36.turns, and abrasive track surface and a sweeping turn three which

:35:37. > :35:40.transfers so much energy into the tyres. For pole position, the car

:35:41. > :35:44.needs to be efficient in all areas, power, aerodynamics, handling,

:35:45. > :35:48.traction and straight-line speed. Over the last three years, three

:35:49. > :35:52.different constructors have taken the top spot, Red Bull, Williams and

:35:53. > :35:56.Mercedes. But Lewis Hamilton has never started from pole. Today he

:35:57. > :36:03.must have another chance to rewrite the record books. It is incredible

:36:04. > :36:07.to think he had never started from pole here, his team-mates did last

:36:08. > :36:11.year, Nico Rosberg took pole position but did not manage to

:36:12. > :36:15.convert it to victory. But a lot of building pressure within that team,

:36:16. > :36:21.and it is for me fascinating to watch the two men go at it. In the

:36:22. > :36:24.case of Lewis, of course, as we see Fernando Alonso, Lewis has gone up

:36:25. > :36:29.against a world champion, going through that pressure of

:36:30. > :36:33.understanding that his success is your failing, and it is the first

:36:34. > :36:36.time Nico Rosberg has had a consistently quick car which is

:36:37. > :36:41.undoubtedly going to take one of them to the world championship. Nico

:36:42. > :36:44.Rosberg took pole from Lewis Hamilton by a quarter of a second,

:36:45. > :36:48.but they did not have the race performance we are seeing this year.

:36:49. > :36:53.Daniel Ricciardo has been the star of qualifying several times this

:36:54. > :36:56.year, on the front row twice. We have had several wet qualifying

:36:57. > :37:00.sessions, and today will be only the second time we go into a bone dry

:37:01. > :37:06.qualifying session. The only other one was in Bahrain, and that was, in

:37:07. > :37:12.fact, Nico Rosberg's turn to date is only pole position of the year. No

:37:13. > :37:15.question that Lewis has the reputation for being one of the

:37:16. > :37:20.quickest guys over a single lap, very much like his hero, Ayrton

:37:21. > :37:23.Senna. Nico has shown great pace through his career, but not with the

:37:24. > :37:27.same sort of intensity and spotlight, and that is why this will

:37:28. > :37:30.be one of the fascinating battles, to see who can take the upper hand.

:37:31. > :37:36.Sebastian Vettel visualising the lap, it will take a superhuman

:37:37. > :37:41.effort for him too busy life the sort of pace that Mercedes are

:37:42. > :37:45.showing this afternoon. Yes, Rosberg and Hamilton were fastest in final

:37:46. > :37:48.practice this morning, Alonso was third fastest ahead of Massa in the

:37:49. > :37:52.Williams, Williams looking quite strong. And what out for Lotus, they

:37:53. > :37:57.have had a difficult start to the season for Romain Grosjean and his

:37:58. > :38:00.new team-mate, Pastor Maldonado, but much more encouraging this weekend.

:38:01. > :38:08.Grosjean was fifth fastest, Al DiNardo was in the top ten as well.

:38:09. > :38:13.Maldonado was the race winner two years ago, so he is fast on the

:38:14. > :38:18.circuit. Sergio Perez for Force India, their worry is qualifying,

:38:19. > :38:25.will they be able to get a single lap out of it. At the lower end of

:38:26. > :38:29.the grid, Marussia versus Caterham, Marussia looking quite strong in

:38:30. > :38:32.that battle this weekend. Jules Bianchi we were just looking at, we

:38:33. > :38:35.will have to wait and see whether he will be able to deliver when we get

:38:36. > :38:43.to the raise funds, or qualifying here today. -- get to the race.

:38:44. > :38:47.Lewis Hamilton has never been on pole here, but he was fastest in

:38:48. > :38:50.qualifying only for McLaren not to have a sufficient amount of fuel in

:38:51. > :38:54.the car for him to be able to keep that pole position spot. He would

:38:55. > :39:00.have been fastest but has never started from pole position. A very

:39:01. > :39:04.serious looking young Ferrari fan! So many Ferrari fans here today in

:39:05. > :39:07.support of Fernando Alonso, and off the back of the third-place finish

:39:08. > :39:13.in China for Fernando Alonso, do we give them a bit more hope? Fernando

:39:14. > :39:17.can always bring a special result for his home Grand Prix, and the gap

:39:18. > :39:21.in terms of outright performance will be a step too far. The level of

:39:22. > :39:24.dominance through the free practice sessions from Mercedes is much

:39:25. > :39:29.bigger than we ever saw from Red Bull in their dominant streak. But

:39:30. > :39:32.that said, Fernando is the ultimate professional, he never gives up, and

:39:33. > :39:37.with a bit of home support, it is like having a tail wind. Nigel

:39:38. > :39:42.Mansell used to claim it was worth a second, I doubt it was worth that

:39:43. > :39:45.much! But if they believe it gives them a boost, psychologically, the

:39:46. > :39:50.brain controls the body, not the other way around, and it is very

:39:51. > :39:53.much a mind game. Stunning performances from Alonso here in the

:39:54. > :39:57.past, that last win for him and Ferrari was at this very track.

:39:58. > :40:01.Marcus Ericsson is just keeping an eye on what is going to happen as

:40:02. > :40:05.the beginning of qualifying does get under way. The first car contract is

:40:06. > :40:08.Esteban Gutierrez under way. The first car contract is

:40:09. > :40:11.as we have heard, this car is lighter this weekend. They have

:40:12. > :40:15.managed to save some weight from various areas around the car, and

:40:16. > :40:20.they are hoping this will allow them to escape Q1. Now, they really have

:40:21. > :40:24.been in the fight right at the lower end of the grid this year. They have

:40:25. > :40:28.been fighting with the Marussias and Caterhams, a little faster than

:40:29. > :40:34.those two teams, but it has been a struggle for them to get out of Q1,

:40:35. > :40:37.so that has to be their first target. Kobayashi getting ready,

:40:38. > :40:41.Caterham will struggle very much to get through the first part of

:40:42. > :40:45.qualifying. They have not been showing a great turn of pace, and

:40:46. > :40:49.announcements are changes on their technical team, with Mark Smith

:40:50. > :40:52.leaving the team, and they are setting up a technical committee to

:40:53. > :41:01.run things at Caterham in the future. Adrian Sutil contract,

:41:02. > :41:07.Esteban Gutierrez out, so both the Saubers are on track. Both Force

:41:08. > :41:15.Indias are out as well, but Fernando Alonso, a double race winner of this

:41:16. > :41:19.track, let's see if he can improve on fourth place on the grid, his

:41:20. > :41:24.best position so far this year. Maldonado on his way out, that

:41:25. > :41:29.unique twin-task design on the front end of the Lotus. Now they finally

:41:30. > :41:32.seem to be getting a bit of performance from it, and there is a

:41:33. > :41:37.terms of seeing Lotus in the top ten. Plenty to watch out for, Force

:41:38. > :41:41.India, of course, well up in the championship, ahead of Ferrari in

:41:42. > :41:44.the constructors table. They sit third in the points. I think this

:41:45. > :41:50.weekend could prove to be a little more difficult for them. Let's what

:41:51. > :41:53.Gutierrez, he goes on to the first flying lap, and we can get an

:41:54. > :41:57.opportunity to look at this track, which is so well-known to drivers

:41:58. > :42:01.and teams and Formula One fans alike from Grands Prix and the extensive

:42:02. > :42:05.testing that has been done here in the past. And it is a great track,

:42:06. > :42:12.it has been on the calendar since the early 1990s, it is a real neck

:42:13. > :42:18.rancher, especially turn three, as we dropped down into the hairpin. It

:42:19. > :42:22.is a circuit that you need, mentally, if you get one sequence

:42:23. > :42:28.wrong, it can put you out of position on other corners. As we go

:42:29. > :42:33.up the hill into turn nine, qualifying utopia would be to get

:42:34. > :42:37.that flat, but with lower downforce and the Pirelli tyres that we have,

:42:38. > :42:40.they are some way short of that. You can see the modification from the

:42:41. > :42:46.original race track, a much shorter loop, with more run-off in the area.

:42:47. > :42:50.I don't recall anyone having a big accident there, but then we move

:42:51. > :42:54.into another sequence of corners which robbed us of two incredibly

:42:55. > :42:58.fast right-handers, putting us into this little Mickey Mouse section.

:42:59. > :43:02.This is a good education for what we can expect pace wise from the cars

:43:03. > :43:08.at Monaco. Anyone who is quick through the last section is a pretty

:43:09. > :43:14.good indication of drive ability and mechanical grip. Gutierrez is the

:43:15. > :43:18.first to establish a lap time, 1:29.26, he is on the hard compound.

:43:19. > :43:29.Let's have a little look at a replay of Adrian Sutil. A finger in the air

:43:30. > :43:32.as well! A very sophisticated way to hold your steering wheel! What we

:43:33. > :43:38.will be thinking about is a target lap time, he clipped the kerb as

:43:39. > :43:42.well. And a crashed from Maldonado! Maldonado has crashed, take on the

:43:43. > :43:46.front end off, the right front corner. Pastor Maldonado, would you

:43:47. > :43:51.believe it, when Lotus are finally starting to look like a competitive

:43:52. > :43:57.team, and he has crashed. Let's try and identify, out of turn three, I

:43:58. > :44:01.think. He has gone off and hit the wall somewhere, and obviously we

:44:02. > :44:07.wait for a replay. Is it turn nine of the head? Maybe it is out of

:44:08. > :44:12.seven and eight. It could be the exit of turn three, it is somewhere

:44:13. > :44:17.you do not normally see the car. Let's go for the exit of turn three.

:44:18. > :44:22.Red flag, session stopped - qualifying one comes to an early

:44:23. > :44:25.halt, a pause rather than a halt, because the session will restart

:44:26. > :44:30.with 13 and a half minutes still to go. The club has stopped, but out of

:44:31. > :44:34.qualifying is Pastor Maldonado. Clearly, we are down to one Lotus in

:44:35. > :44:38.the session, and that is so bitterly disappointing when they have been

:44:39. > :44:41.showing so much better pace. He completed more laps yesterday than

:44:42. > :44:49.anybody else just to show how they are in better shape. He got wide as

:44:50. > :44:53.he came through two. He managed to get through the apex, does he lose

:44:54. > :44:59.out on the kerb? He has gone beyond the normal position of the track. So

:45:00. > :45:04.this is the mid of turn two. Overtier there -- oversteer there.

:45:05. > :45:09.As the car starts to oversteer he runs wide on to the green painted

:45:10. > :45:17.part of the circuit. He corrects it but he would have been better off

:45:18. > :45:20.doing a spin. I lost the car. In that situation he corrected into it.

:45:21. > :45:24.If he had turned the steering away from the direction of travel, he

:45:25. > :45:28.would have gone round and spun down the circuit. That is a decision you

:45:29. > :45:34.have to make very quickly, when you in a recovery mode already. That is

:45:35. > :45:39.an instantaneous decision a drive can take. There is Charles pick, the

:45:40. > :45:44.development driver for Lotus, but Maldonado who has not covered

:45:45. > :45:48.himself in glory this year, former race winner round here, pole

:45:49. > :45:53.position winner as well, back in 2012, that brilliant victory he had

:45:54. > :45:57.oefr Fernando Alonso, how long ago that seem, this season has not got

:45:58. > :46:01.any better. -- over. Finally he has a car that seems to be half

:46:02. > :46:05.competitive and he has chucked it in the wall He is going no further,

:46:06. > :46:09.disappointment and for the Lotus team, with all the financial rumours

:46:10. > :46:12.surrounding whether they are paying their Renault bills, and what the

:46:13. > :46:16.financial state of that team is, the last thing of course you need is

:46:17. > :46:20.more crash damage. I was getting into the subject of what kind of lap

:46:21. > :46:24.times we should be looking at. We have a bit of piece and quiet so it

:46:25. > :46:29.a good time to bring you in, Tom. What have you heard up and down the

:46:30. > :46:35.pit lane in terms of what the target time should be to get through Q1? I

:46:36. > :46:43.have been talking to several engineers since the final practise

:46:44. > :46:52.sex, they reckon you will have to do a 1.28, 1: 28.1. A second quicker

:46:53. > :46:57.than what we have seen so far: -- session. That looks possible for

:46:58. > :47:01.certainly the Force Indias and the Saubers looking at the lap time of

:47:02. > :47:05.the car in P1, because the difference in lap time between the

:47:06. > :47:08.hard and the medium that we saw, certainly yesterday, was about 1.2

:47:09. > :47:11.seconds that, was the average lap time difference, it was less than

:47:12. > :47:15.that this morning but track temperatures are more akin to how

:47:16. > :47:20.they were during second practise, so we should see that gap between the

:47:21. > :47:24.two tyres opening up a bit, and which of the front runners will be

:47:25. > :47:27.able to get through on the hard tyre, well, you got your money on

:47:28. > :47:32.Mercedes but everyone will have to probably go on the medium tyre.

:47:33. > :47:35.Thank you. Another quick look at a replay of Maldonado getting it

:47:36. > :47:40.wrong. It is interesting he corrected it initially and then it

:47:41. > :47:43.went He ran beyond that Green Line painted on to the circuit, but just

:47:44. > :47:52.beyond that the point he loses the car, we see him going into turn one.

:47:53. > :47:57.He has a bit of oversteer here, it's a question of he should have backed

:47:58. > :48:02.out. It is ease I in hindsight. The dark green is artificial grass. It

:48:03. > :48:06.is like a plastic grass, and once he has got the rear of the car on to

:48:07. > :48:10.that, he should have released the throttle. Opened the steering,

:48:11. > :48:13.instead of trying to fight it. He got his hand into the back of the

:48:14. > :48:19.left hand side of the steering wheel. Reaching for the clutch. You

:48:20. > :48:23.have clutch paddle on Riether side and depending on his personal

:48:24. > :48:26.preference trying to make sure that in the first instance he was keeping

:48:27. > :48:33.the engine running there is an anti-stall on these engines if it

:48:34. > :48:37.senses it is going to go a target RPM it will lift the clutch for you

:48:38. > :48:43.but it doesn't always work at Hague speed. There is a lot to look at

:48:44. > :48:47.here. He starts to lose it and watch his hand as well. That is him trying

:48:48. > :48:51.to grab the clutch paddle. What you could hear there, on that audio is

:48:52. > :48:55.once he went beyond the Green Line, he was on the artificial grass you

:48:56. > :49:02.here the RPM increase, that is the point it is spinning the rear wheels

:49:03. > :49:08.and 140mph on the corner, wheel spin is going to lead to major incident.

:49:09. > :49:12.The previous specification of cars with more downforce and less

:49:13. > :49:15.horsepower, this is worrying for it is not totally under control at the

:49:16. > :49:19.moment. Normally they have an additional strap which they pull

:49:20. > :49:23.back and attach to the recovery vehicle. You can end up getting more

:49:24. > :49:27.damage if they are overenthusiastic, they are under no pressure to remove

:49:28. > :49:31.it. They can take their time and move that cars it has been damaged

:49:32. > :49:35.at the front but the rear of the gash, gearbox hasn't got any damage,

:49:36. > :49:39.they will check it and you know, they don't want to see it banging up

:49:40. > :49:45.against the tractor. Coming back to that turn three, it is a corner you

:49:46. > :49:50.said earlier it was flat out, with the old spec cars but you have more

:49:51. > :49:55.horsepower, less downforce so they are having to rethink that corner.

:49:56. > :50:00.They are, but I don't see it as any different from when they race in the

:50:01. > :50:05.rain. If you go back to the heyday of downforce when it rained they had

:50:06. > :50:10.less, less grip, the water after reflected the slot gaps, so they

:50:11. > :50:14.adapted to that, and of course, in dry-running, they may have the nice

:50:15. > :50:18.memories and in Maldonado's case he won for Williams, so he has nice

:50:19. > :50:22.memories of driving this circuit, but you have to drive for the

:50:23. > :50:26.condition, and you know, modern Formula One has a different way of

:50:27. > :50:29.delivering power now, with the amount of electrical energy that is

:50:30. > :50:34.recover rabble. They have smaller wings but when you go to Monza you

:50:35. > :50:38.ran much less downforce and you got on with it. It is a relative thing,

:50:39. > :50:42.you want to be quicker than your competitor, and what happens those

:50:43. > :50:45.who are winning don't complain, those who are not winning have a

:50:46. > :50:51.list of racing driver complaints and excuses. Well, I don't think he had

:50:52. > :50:56.any excuse, it looked straightforward driver Ron on.

:50:57. > :51:00.Pastor Maldonado's fault. He was still on the hard tyre there, it

:51:01. > :51:03.wasn't as if it was going to be his best lap of the day. Maldonado is

:51:04. > :51:08.south of qualifying. We have lost one, we get into the rest of Q1. 13

:51:09. > :51:14.minutes to go, and we will lose another five cars during the course

:51:15. > :51:17.of this next 13 minutes. Now, we no the Caterhams and Marussias will be

:51:18. > :51:24.struggling to get through. Sauber could be in a bit of danger. Force

:51:25. > :51:28.Indias were not as quick as they would have liked this morning. It

:51:29. > :51:31.might why we have seen Hulkenberg and Perez out fairly on, to

:51:32. > :51:35.determine what the balance of the car is, Fernando Alonso now makes

:51:36. > :51:39.his first exit in this session for Ferrari.

:51:40. > :51:43.He sets off down the pit lane, there will be a huge response round the

:51:44. > :51:46.circuit to Alonso coming out, I am sure. Twice winner on this track,

:51:47. > :51:50.also a winner of the European Grand Prix at Valencia a couple of years

:51:51. > :51:54.ago, and another stunning drive when he came from way back down the grid

:51:55. > :51:59.to take victory, so he just loves to race on home soil, and of course

:52:00. > :52:03.very much the national hero. So, the Ferrari hoping to have developed a

:52:04. > :52:07.bit more speed, that promising performance with third place in

:52:08. > :52:11.China, but yet to qualify in the top three, so far this season. Really,

:52:12. > :52:17.you would expect it still to be tough, Red Bull have been looking

:52:18. > :52:20.quicker over one lap than Ferrari. It could be Vettel versus Alonso and

:52:21. > :52:28.Ricciardo for that matter for a position on the second row of the

:52:29. > :52:32.grid. Let us ride onboard with Nico Rosberg.

:52:33. > :52:36.We expect him to be in the battle with Lewis Hamilton for pole

:52:37. > :52:38.position this year. We will see no oversteer like we saw with

:52:39. > :52:44.Maldonado. Let us listen through three.

:52:45. > :52:48.Lifted out early and got on the power and opened that throttle. Not

:52:49. > :52:52.taking any risk. Getting on the green. A bit of oversteer at the

:52:53. > :52:56.apex into four. Very wind affected this circuit. We set up on a slight

:52:57. > :53:01.elevate -- elevation here, not far from the sea, you get gusty winds

:53:02. > :53:05.which affects the cars, dropping down towards seven, braking with

:53:06. > :53:12.lateral load on, and as you go through the apex, the circuit rises

:53:13. > :53:16.up. Nice and tidy so far. Well, a major lift as he turned in, you can

:53:17. > :53:19.hear the difference in the actual performance, we should remember with

:53:20. > :53:23.less drag on the cars this year, they are arriving at the corners at

:53:24. > :53:27.a higher speed, so that has an effect on whether they can carry as

:53:28. > :53:32.much speed through the apex or not. He is a little quicker than

:53:33. > :53:36.Hamilton, who is on a lap currently. Rosberg further along and of course

:53:37. > :53:40.fastest of everybody so far, Hamilton a fraction slower than in

:53:41. > :53:47.the first sector. Nice and steady, not using too much

:53:48. > :53:52.of the kerb as he comes out. Will struggle to control the torque as he

:53:53. > :53:56.runs for the line. 126.7. So he goes fastest for the moment. We are about

:53:57. > :54:00.a second away from fastest time we saw this morning. We are waiting for

:54:01. > :54:03.Hamilton to cross line. Hamilton is not going to challenge. That was

:54:04. > :54:09.Grosjean rejoining the circuitment so she has overshot the braking

:54:10. > :54:14.point down at ten and bailed out of this particular lap. -- circuit. Ten

:54:15. > :54:18.minutes to go they may need, probably will need to run the medium

:54:19. > :54:27.come pond tyre as Tom suggested, it may be that Mercedes can get through

:54:28. > :54:30.this segment. Surely he will. -- compound tyre. Let us see what

:54:31. > :54:34.happened to Grosjean. He locks up, has no choice but to

:54:35. > :54:38.use the escape road. That will have done a bit of damage to that front

:54:39. > :54:49.left. If he is lucky it won't have a flat spot. With the long straight...

:54:50. > :55:23.RADIO: momentum brought it back again. That

:55:24. > :55:26.us was a replay. That is why he backed off in the middle sector of

:55:27. > :55:31.the last lap. So Lewis Hamilton, that is the mistake that caused him

:55:32. > :55:34.to back off. He is on a quick lap. Fastest of anybody in the first

:55:35. > :55:39.sector, a fraction slower than Rosberg in the second. Let us see

:55:40. > :55:44.what Vettel does, 27.9 for Vettel. Goes second to Rosberg. What about

:55:45. > :55:49.Hamilton? This could beat Rosberg's time. Out of the last corn her comes

:55:50. > :55:54.and not quite. Four tenths of a second slower Rosberg was quicker in

:55:55. > :55:59.the last part of free practise this morning. Has he found a comfort

:56:00. > :56:10.zone? Let us see how that develops and just a word on someone who is

:56:11. > :56:14.able to translate gond digeek. Jenson Button on a reasonable lap.

:56:15. > :56:20.The come par son at the bottom left is to 16th place, because of course,

:56:21. > :56:27.to get into Q2 you need to be in the top 16. We will lose six gash,

:56:28. > :56:30.currently in the drop zone we have Sutil and Kobayashi. Grosjean at the

:56:31. > :56:33.moment, because he has not done a lap. Button who is about to complete

:56:34. > :56:37.his lap and Maldonado who will be out because he hasn't managed to

:56:38. > :56:42.complete a lap at all, because he crashed into the wall on exit of

:56:43. > :56:48.turn three. Button crosses the line, goes tenth.

:56:49. > :56:54.RADIO: P2 and it is about half a second to P1. That is mainly exit

:56:55. > :57:00.turn seven and turn 10. And that is the areas that Hamilton being told

:57:01. > :57:03.where he can maybe pick up some time. Maybe won't worry about it

:57:04. > :57:07.now, he will be concentrating on getting the ultimate out of car.

:57:08. > :57:12.Hulkenberg prepares to come out. He is only 13th and Perez is 15th. As

:57:13. > :57:15.we thought Force India are struggling a bit in

:57:16. > :57:19.we thought Force India are conditions. Lock up for Kimi

:57:20. > :57:24.Raikkonen. You can hear the wail of the tyre. Haven't heard that for a

:57:25. > :57:27.while. Not since Melbourne that I recall hearing the screeching of the

:57:28. > :57:32.tyre. Raikkonen having a better weekend than the previous races. He

:57:33. > :57:39.needs it. You know, we need to build to see him have a clean run, to

:57:40. > :57:45.young where he is relative to Fernando Alonso. That has been a

:57:46. > :57:48.tale for many of the team, the hard tyre Pirelli have brought. Even

:57:49. > :57:54.though the track temperature is up to 44 degree, if the cars aren't

:57:55. > :57:59.generating a lot of downforce, and McLaren are light on that, it might

:58:00. > :58:03.affect Force India, they struggle to get the tiers to work. They are so

:58:04. > :58:08.temperature sensitive, the track temperature as we speak is 44

:58:09. > :58:13.degrees, so certainly, you know, plenty of residual heat in the

:58:14. > :58:17.Tarmac. It is about how the driver prepares the lap. You can influence

:58:18. > :58:21.the temperature by brake, you radiate the temperature from within

:58:22. > :58:25.the brake disk, that goes into the wheel and affects the pressures and

:58:26. > :58:30.by generating load, surface temperature you can get easily by

:58:31. > :58:35.spinning up the rear etyres but it is more general difficult to

:58:36. > :58:39.generate that. The medium tyre, Hamilton is on another lap. He has

:58:40. > :58:44.gone quickest of anybody else in the first sector, he has gone a little

:58:45. > :58:49.slower in the middle sectors it may be experimenting a bit. He doesn't

:58:50. > :58:54.really need to put in a faster lap I would have thought. Just over five

:58:55. > :58:59.minutes to go and we are getting into the serious bit now of Q1. In

:59:00. > :59:03.the drop down are the two Marussias, the Caterhams and the Lotus of

:59:04. > :59:09.Grosjean and Maldonado that doesn't appear on the bra gra -- graphic.

:59:10. > :59:12.Watching Hulkenberg here, let us see how he gets on, has put in

:59:13. > :59:18.tremendous performances this year, but will the car give him what he

:59:19. > :59:22.needs in qualifying here? He is a star performer consistently. One of

:59:23. > :59:25.the bigger drives, we know some of the other team, Sauber especially

:59:26. > :59:29.have come here with up grades to reduce the weight of the car, that

:59:30. > :59:34.should help Sutil. He is another one of the, he is like a whippet but he

:59:35. > :59:40.is tall, so he has to carry weight more than his team-mate. And Force

:59:41. > :59:51.India delivering what must be a modest budget in comparison the the

:59:52. > :59:54.four big teams. Currently fourth in the championship, Nico Hulkenberg.

:59:55. > :59:58.Nico Hulkenberg was pretty apprehensive coming into this race,

:59:59. > :00:03.saying that the team has only brought a new floor, everything else

:00:04. > :00:06.is as he raced in China. When you consider how much some of the other

:00:07. > :00:10.teams have brought here, he was saying, are we going to be as

:00:11. > :00:16.competitive? He was certainly nervous, let's see what his lap time

:00:17. > :00:20.is like. We are into the last part on the softer tyre, this is a

:00:21. > :00:25.crucial lap for him. Through the last corner, oh, a lot of steering

:00:26. > :00:31.effort. In the past few years, it has been a simple drive around

:00:32. > :00:37.there, he goes sixth fastest, 1:28.1. That is around the target

:00:38. > :00:40.time, but is it going to be enough? That is not going to be comfortable,

:00:41. > :00:47.I don't think, he would like to see a better time than that. Perez, his

:00:48. > :00:51.team-mate, is on the cusp, 16th, of what is available from that car.

:00:52. > :00:56.Just in front of him is Adrian Sutil, who is a lot slower than his

:00:57. > :01:00.team-mate, complaining of the car being all over the place. He was

:01:01. > :01:04.this morning as well. Whatever they have brought to light in that

:01:05. > :01:15.chassis and overall package is not to his liking. Team radio so

:01:16. > :01:22.unstable, unreal! Perez has a good record at this circuit, he has not

:01:23. > :01:27.been outqualified by a team mate here, including at McLaren. He is a

:01:28. > :01:32.little bit slower this time than his team-mate, but he goes 12th quickest

:01:33. > :01:37.on that. That is a little bit more dangerous territory, 1:28.5. On

:01:38. > :01:40.board with Daniel Ricciardo, one of the outstanding drivers of the year

:01:41. > :01:45.so far as he has moved up to Red Bull, what can he deliver today? The

:01:46. > :01:50.option is just to move up the order slightly, be a little safer. He

:01:51. > :01:54.struggled for balance this morning, he had a big chunk of oversteer, he

:01:55. > :02:01.goes Forth, fine for now. Yeah, a good performance, that puts the Red

:02:02. > :02:07.Bulls through to the next part of qualifying. Looking at who is on the

:02:08. > :02:14.cusp, Button and Magnussen in 14th and 15th, so expect a bit more from

:02:15. > :02:17.McLaren. An interesting comment from Hamilton saying, we have made the

:02:18. > :02:22.car worse, it is a nightmare to drive. Actually, he is not happy

:02:23. > :02:28.with the balance of his car. Grosjean goes safe with 12th

:02:29. > :02:32.fastest, 1:28.4. On board with Magnussen, currently 16th, in the

:02:33. > :02:37.danger zone, but behind in is the Sauber of Sutil on the medium

:02:38. > :02:41.compound tyre. Red Bull, by the way, have done their time is on the hard

:02:42. > :02:45.tyre, both Vettel and Ricciardo looked to be safely through to the

:02:46. > :02:50.next part of qualifying on the hard tyre, putting them in better shape.

:02:51. > :02:54.If we believe these are worth more than a second, that should move

:02:55. > :03:01.Magnussen up to the area where Red Bull currently sits. One of the Red

:03:02. > :03:07.Bulls, Vettel, getting out of the way to allow McLaren a clear run to

:03:08. > :03:13.turn seven. Interestingly, he shifts down a gear through nine, looking

:03:14. > :03:16.for a bit more drive and torque from the engine. Of course, all the

:03:17. > :03:20.drivers and teams are still learning. They did not test in

:03:21. > :03:23.Barcelona, which is quite rare. Normally it is used for a huge

:03:24. > :03:29.amount of pre-season testing, but this year they tested at Jerez and

:03:30. > :03:33.in Bahrain. I think Button pulled over to let Magnussen have a clear

:03:34. > :03:38.run. If he is having difficulty getting the front is working, having

:03:39. > :03:45.to slow down for his team-mate, that is not going to help. Is he coming

:03:46. > :03:50.in? No, Button is in 15th. I presume he will continue past. Magnussen

:03:51. > :03:55.goes 11th, but Button has now been pushed down to 16th, very much in

:03:56. > :04:03.the danger zone. He has just started his time to lap. Raikkonen gets away

:04:04. > :04:07.with that, too deep through one, compromising your line into two. Was

:04:08. > :04:10.he put off by the Toro Rosso which eventually led him past? He might

:04:11. > :04:13.have been unsettled by the uncertainty of knowing whether it

:04:14. > :04:20.would get out of the way. Chequered flag, sorry, I was just going to

:04:21. > :04:24.say, Magnussen only gained around a seven tenths from the option tyres,

:04:25. > :04:31.so McLaren not getting much out of them. Button, 24.1 in the first

:04:32. > :04:36.sector, quicker than his team-mate. Sutil is 16th for the moment, but

:04:37. > :04:40.Jenson Button has been pushed down. Sutil reporting something wrong with

:04:41. > :04:45.the car, all over the place. Kobayashi comes across the line for

:04:46. > :04:50.Caterham, 19th, faster than Max Chilton but slower than Bianchi, who

:04:51. > :04:54.is back in the pits. Bianchi has outqualified Kobayashi. We await

:04:55. > :04:59.Chilton and Ericsson to finish off. He has been off a couple of times

:05:00. > :05:04.this weekend, Max Chilton, but he just held it together. That was Max

:05:05. > :05:10.Chilton, not Bianchi, as the caption came up with. He is still on a lap,

:05:11. > :05:14.Magnussen, but we are interested to see Button, who was currently in the

:05:15. > :05:19.drop zone. He was second quickest on Friday morning, but McLaren really

:05:20. > :05:23.appear to be struggling. He has done enough, ninth quickest. That button

:05:24. > :05:29.safe. Kimi Raikkonen is in the danger zone, but I do not think

:05:30. > :05:34.anyone can threaten him. No, he has gone tends anyway. Grosjean is the

:05:35. > :05:37.next closest to that area. I do not think anybody else can threaten him.

:05:38. > :05:43.We have those cars that are eliminated, and although Gutierrez

:05:44. > :05:49.did get through in 13th position, Adrian Sutil failed. The gap between

:05:50. > :05:53.them, less than two tenths, and more than two tenths in weight difference

:05:54. > :05:57.between the two. But the net result is that Sutil is out, Max Chilton

:05:58. > :06:03.has failed, but he has outqualified his team-mate, and he will be happy

:06:04. > :06:09.about that. Chilton is the fastest of the Caterham-Marussia Quartet, a

:06:10. > :06:14.good effort from him. The Caterhams really struggling, I don't know what

:06:15. > :06:20.happened to Kobayashi, unusual to see him at the bottom of the list.

:06:21. > :06:23.Ericsson was on pole position here in GP2 last year, and he has ended

:06:24. > :06:29.up head of his team-mate for the first time this year. Good effort

:06:30. > :06:40.from him. Somewhat surprised with Kobayashi, I expect he had an issue.

:06:41. > :06:44.We will find out why. Daniil Kvyat having an issue into the last

:06:45. > :06:48.sequence of corners. One thing led to another, didn't it? A bit of

:06:49. > :06:56.inexperience, you make one mistake and do not allow it to frustrate you

:06:57. > :07:02.into compounding the issue. Now, Vergne delivered a pretty good lap,

:07:03. > :07:08.and both Toro Rossos have done well, sixth for Kvyat, eight for Vergne,

:07:09. > :07:12.but Vergne has a ten place penalty because of... They had a wheel come

:07:13. > :07:16.off yesterday, they have a ten place penalty. The Caterhams and

:07:17. > :07:25.Morrisseys bowed out, interestingly just a little bit slower than the

:07:26. > :07:31.GP2 pole time. -- Marussias both out. It is an interesting aspect

:07:32. > :07:38.this year. Adrian Sutil for Sauber, Max Chilton, fastest of the other

:07:39. > :07:45.four, he is out, so is Bianchi. TEAM RADIO: I guess we would have

:07:46. > :07:52.been out, we would have been out, Sutil date 28.5.

:07:53. > :07:57.All sorts of problems, Jenson Button not sounding very happy, this is the

:07:58. > :08:01.story of his season post-Australia. Just carrying on from last year,

:08:02. > :08:06.with the exception of Australia, absolutely right, Suzi, he is not

:08:07. > :08:11.enjoy his racing, and you can see why. As a world champion, you expect

:08:12. > :08:14.to be given a car that has a decent chance to have a fight around the

:08:15. > :08:19.top end of the grid. And at the moment he doesn't have that. Romain

:08:20. > :08:24.Grosjean left it quite late to go out and do is lap, and is team-mate

:08:25. > :08:28.Maldonado did not. Lotus are trying to move forward, Eddie, and mistakes

:08:29. > :08:33.like this will not make them happy. It doesn't help. You need everyone

:08:34. > :08:40.pulling together, a team effort, and the drivers are just at the sharp

:08:41. > :08:44.end. Everyone else is behind them, and they all need the drivers to do

:08:45. > :08:49.their best job. We don't know what was wrong with a car, if someone

:08:50. > :08:53.broke or it was driver error, but you do need the card to be in there

:08:54. > :09:00.with a fighting chance. He is now out, he will be at the back of the

:09:01. > :09:06.grid for the race. He is having a shocker of a season, what do you

:09:07. > :09:11.make of Maldonado? He did win here with Williams, now with Lotus, not

:09:12. > :09:15.going well. He has taken a decision, he brought his sponsorship

:09:16. > :09:20.out of Williams, he had a little bit of a rat last year, and he brought

:09:21. > :09:25.its two Lotus. Lotus needed the financial support, he brought it

:09:26. > :09:28.there. It is not obvious to everyone that that is paying off, and on the

:09:29. > :09:33.other side you have Williams, which really does look much stronger.

:09:34. > :09:38.Let's have a little look at Lewis Hamilton, he had a moment, unlike

:09:39. > :09:42.him this year, as Nigel Mansell described as almost perfect, but he

:09:43. > :09:48.did make a mistake. The kiss of death! Thanks, Nigel! Nigel saying

:09:49. > :09:53.somebody is on top of his game! Nevertheless, Lewis is on top of his

:09:54. > :09:57.game, he has won these last races, fighting hard for a championship

:09:58. > :10:01.lead, he wants to go into Monaco with the championship lead. I am

:10:02. > :10:06.sure, you know, he will be very hard to beat this weekend. Quite worrying

:10:07. > :10:12.what he said on team radio, we have made the car worse, that is not what

:10:13. > :10:15.you want to hear. If you analyse each and every communication between

:10:16. > :10:18.a driver and a team that we have seen in that session, it is all

:10:19. > :10:23.about the same thing, the lack of grip, no rear grip. All of the

:10:24. > :10:27.situations you would expect, but either there is something wrong with

:10:28. > :10:32.the track for the tyres, and I would not be worried. If I was Lewis, just

:10:33. > :10:37.calm down a bit, take a deep breath, let's make another run at this. Nico

:10:38. > :10:43.Rosberg seems very calm, in the battle between the two, but we have

:10:44. > :10:47.got Q2 first, so back to our commentators, David and Ben.

:10:48. > :10:51.Sebastian Vettel safely into Q2, he has not made it into Q3 every time

:10:52. > :10:55.this year, he has missed it on a couple of occasions so far this

:10:56. > :10:58.season. Let's see whether he can do it. He is incredibly close to

:10:59. > :11:02.getting into the top ten, the sort of lap times between the likes of a

:11:03. > :11:08.league game as in fifth place all the way down to the guys in 15th

:11:09. > :11:15.place is just about half a second or so. -- the likes of Felipe Massa.

:11:16. > :11:20.Peter Sauber on the left with his development driver Giedo van der

:11:21. > :11:24.Garde. Monisha Kaltenborn celebrating her birthday today, I am

:11:25. > :11:28.not sure there will be a huge amount to celebrate. Gutierrez was 13th

:11:29. > :11:33.fastest, a little bit of a boost for the team, ahead of Magnussen, a

:11:34. > :11:38.little bit of a surprise. Button ended up ten fastest in that first

:11:39. > :11:42.session, so it doesn't look as though there is a particularly

:11:43. > :11:46.strong resurgence from McLaren on this occasion. The session gets

:11:47. > :11:49.under way, Tom, we saw the lap times that were needed to get through, any

:11:50. > :11:54.idea what we are looking at to get into the top ten? I have just been

:11:55. > :11:59.ferreting around, looking at a high 27, I think that is what we will

:12:00. > :12:03.see. We saw, of course, a lot of the middle group go out on the medium

:12:04. > :12:07.tyre, so they have had that advantage already. It is a question

:12:08. > :12:13.of trying to eke out a couple more tenths, let's see how close they get

:12:14. > :12:17.to a high 27. Esteban Gutierrez, the one remaining Sauber in the field

:12:18. > :12:22.now, we have lost Adrian Sutil from the line-up. But otherwise, it is

:12:23. > :12:27.going to be the Toro Rossos the ones to keep an eye on. Kvyat was sixth

:12:28. > :12:31.fastest in the session, Vergne eight fastest. We know he has a penalty,

:12:32. > :12:36.but you are allowed to go right through qualifying to get as high as

:12:37. > :12:43.you can do for the actual grid tomorrow. So Vergne could be one to

:12:44. > :12:47.keep an eye on as well. Out onto the track, Nico Hulkenberg. He did a

:12:48. > :12:50.good lap in that last session, seventh fastest, he would have been

:12:51. > :12:55.pretty happy with that, knowing that qualification might be a weakness.

:12:56. > :13:00.Kevin Magnussen studying some data. We are not quite in a paperless

:13:01. > :13:04.office in Formula One, he has an overlay between himself and his

:13:05. > :13:07.team-mate. Jenson only marginally quicker, but he will be surprised to

:13:08. > :13:13.see just how much variation there can be in driving style and actually

:13:14. > :13:16.building the lap time together. So he will be banking the bits where he

:13:17. > :13:22.knows he is quicker, which inevitably he will be in some areas,

:13:23. > :13:27.and trying to work out, how do I do that in the other areas? Hulkenberg

:13:28. > :13:31.plunges down the hill into turn five, and then this next little

:13:32. > :13:35.section through the little kink at six, then seven and eight climbing

:13:36. > :13:38.back up the hill once again. A fantastic viewing platform on the

:13:39. > :13:42.grass bank on the outside, a beautiful day, air temperature 27

:13:43. > :13:47.degrees, track temperature fairly constant at around the 43 degrees

:13:48. > :13:54.mark. An absolutely gorgeous day here just outside Barcelona. Tom,

:13:55. > :13:57.you have got some more for us? The air temperature, something for the

:13:58. > :14:00.teams to bear in mind in this Q2 session is that the wind has been

:14:01. > :14:06.picking up steadily over the last three hours, but it is quite a

:14:07. > :14:10.strong headwind now. Just finding the braking point into turn one is

:14:11. > :14:16.going to be interesting. Yeah, the wind does affect handling a lot. A

:14:17. > :14:20.headwind into turn one is desirable, because it increases the

:14:21. > :14:24.airspeed over the wings for the same level of track speed, so you get the

:14:25. > :14:28.sensation of having more grip and more downforce. A tailwind is

:14:29. > :14:35.something altogether more difficult to deal with, so you can really

:14:36. > :14:39.barrel some speed in to turn one, give you good position for two, and

:14:40. > :14:43.it becomes a side wind in turn three, which can affect the car

:14:44. > :14:48.quite difficult. Into four, the tailwind makes it difficult to

:14:49. > :14:52.control the rear of the car. This is a good looking lap from Nico

:14:53. > :14:56.Hulkenberg. He looks to be on a new set of the softer tyre, so this will

:14:57. > :15:01.be a crucial lap for him. Even will be watching closely to see what lap

:15:02. > :15:08.time he can achieve. Aid head of both the Red Bull drives in the

:15:09. > :15:12.points. It seems amazing, Hulkenberg ahead of Vettel and Ricciardo as we

:15:13. > :15:16.come into round five, using a lot of road, but just about OK.

:15:17. > :15:23.Would have lost a bit of acceleration on to the back

:15:24. > :15:27.straight. DRS will help neutralise some of that. He gets it tidy, a lot

:15:28. > :15:32.of patience required. A long right-hander before coming into this

:15:33. > :15:39.last little chicane. Perez is also on track, behind him.

:15:40. > :15:44.Let us see how tidy Hulkenberg can be. He is patient, getting on the

:15:45. > :15:49.power. Through the final turn, of course sets the pace in this Q2

:15:50. > :15:55.session. Let us see what the initial lap time is. 1: 28.8. That will be

:15:56. > :15:58.round the target time. It is going to be tight for Force India to get

:15:59. > :16:02.into the top ten. That is their first attempt. Perez behind, not as

:16:03. > :16:07.quick on his current lap, so we will see whether he can improve when he

:16:08. > :16:12.crosses the line, we will see what the lap time is like. Mercedes

:16:13. > :16:14.beginning to make their presence felt. That is.

:16:15. > :16:17.beginning to make their presence felt. Going on the a flying lap. As

:16:18. > :16:21.we still wait for Perez to come round to complete. He is coming

:16:22. > :16:27.through the last corner now, Sergio Perez as goes into turn one.

:16:28. > :16:32.Hulkenberg will psychologically be boosted by that. He has gone a bit

:16:33. > :16:40.quicker, he has been complaining about the rear of the car. They can

:16:41. > :16:43.do tyre pressure, differential and recovery mode which may help

:16:44. > :16:48.establish lies, what you have in terms of bar, springs you are locked

:16:49. > :16:53.in in the parc ferme conditions. Three times in the top ten this

:16:54. > :16:57.year, , he has been in the points on every occasion, might not have

:16:58. > :17:01.dedelivered the headline he would have liked but he had a fifth place

:17:02. > :17:07.this season. Just a bit off Felipe Massa, so he may be, may have been

:17:08. > :17:11.studying the telemetry of it. He got wide through nine. He tried to get

:17:12. > :17:16.on the power, had to lift out of it and ran o ran on to the artificial

:17:17. > :17:20.grass. Lap time looking good. He set a good sector time there. Kimi

:17:21. > :17:24.Raikkonen has gone fastest of anybody in the first sector of the

:17:25. > :17:30.lap. Let us continue to watch in this

:17:31. > :17:34.last part. Mow are the rear tyres holding up? The Williams tends to

:17:35. > :17:38.eat its rare Thais more than some of the other teams. None of that

:17:39. > :17:47.squirrelling of the rear as he goes out through 16, so it is holding 17.

:17:48. > :17:53.The DRS is open. He has gone faster than Perez. What about mast --

:17:54. > :17:57.Massa, is he going faster than his team-mate? Not much in it. Raikkonen

:17:58. > :18:01.is the one who is likely to go fastest in a second or so. Let us

:18:02. > :18:06.see how this compares. Massa goes quicker, a tenth or so quicker than

:18:07. > :18:10.Valtteri Bottas, the Williams very evenly matched. This is something we

:18:11. > :18:17.are likely to see, two by two, the car performance is crucial here.

:18:18. > :18:21.Raikkonen goes fastest, 1: 27.4. Well, that is not going to be

:18:22. > :18:26.enough, I don't think. You would expect the Ferrari to have a bit

:18:27. > :18:30.more pace than that. Hamilton son a lap And Rosberg, that

:18:31. > :18:34.I are trading purple sectors which means they are fastest of all and

:18:35. > :18:38.using his rally experience to good effect as he drifts the car through.

:18:39. > :18:43.Fantastic car control. A lovely shot. Might not been the fastest way

:18:44. > :18:46.but it looks spectacular. Rosberg on a good lap here but Hamilton is

:18:47. > :18:50.behind him. Hamilton is just a couple of hundredth quicker in the

:18:51. > :18:56.first sector than Rosberg, they do seem to be trading blows here, let

:18:57. > :19:03.us see what lap time we can see for Nico Rosberg. He goes fastest 1:

:19:04. > :19:08.26.0. Hamilton not as quick, he lost 11 than a tenth so it will be almost

:19:09. > :19:13.the same. He has a bit of traffic ahead. Hopefully that won't affect

:19:14. > :19:21.his line through this section. 14, 15, into 16. A hint of oversteering.

:19:22. > :19:26.Nico was tidier there. Cost one hundredth of a second there. He is

:19:27. > :19:33.two down on his team-mate. Rosberg takes the advantage, there is plenty

:19:34. > :19:38.of time to go You can see Nico is more come -- comfortable to let the

:19:39. > :19:43.Carol through that last section. Lewis, he is frustrated in the way

:19:44. > :19:47.he has to work the wheel. He knows that will cost him some time. So

:19:48. > :19:54.Alonso will be come round to complete a lap. That was the first

:19:55. > :19:58.computer lap we have -- complete lap we have seen Lewis do. He aborted

:19:59. > :20:02.his medium tyre run, so interesting that the first time he does it, he

:20:03. > :20:07.is slower than Rosberg, who did do a complete lap this morning. Vettel,

:20:08. > :20:13.important lap for Vettel. Raikkonen is a fraction quicker than Alonso,

:20:14. > :20:16.Alonso gone fourth and Vettel goes faster than breath Ferrari, that is

:20:17. > :20:20.the sort of gap evident from yesterday. A half a second gap

:20:21. > :20:25.between Red Bull and Ferrari. Grosjean. He has split the Ferrari,

:20:26. > :20:30.now that does show that Lotus are in better shape here. That is a great

:20:31. > :20:37.lap from Grosjean. The gap between Vettel and the Mercedes as Ricciardo

:20:38. > :20:41.slots in, a further four tenth, that reduces the gap between Mercedes and

:20:42. > :20:46.Red Bull down to six tenth, which given they believe the deficit could

:20:47. > :20:50.have cost them as much as eight tenth of a second they will feel

:20:51. > :20:54.good with that. Button crosses the line but he is only 12th. He is the

:20:55. > :20:59.in the drop zone. We are looking to get into the top ten. Perez,

:21:00. > :21:04.Gutierrez and Kvyat are outside of it and Magnussen yet to set a lap,

:21:05. > :21:10.so is Vergne. So those are the two we haven't seen a lap time from.

:21:11. > :21:16.Kevin Magnussen and Jean-Eric Vergne for Toro Rosso. Eric Boullier

:21:17. > :21:21.keeping a close eye on performance, that is not enough, and Jenson

:21:22. > :21:27.Button a former pole and race win here in Spain but not when he was

:21:28. > :21:32.driving for McLaren, that was in his his winning season with brawn, a

:21:33. > :21:36.team that became Mercedes. The team name has changed but it is one some

:21:37. > :21:46.of the key personnel have remained the same.

:21:47. > :21:52.RADIO: Very strange thing We will have a look. Something strike over

:21:53. > :21:55.braking. It sound as though they haven't got everything working

:21:56. > :22:00.creditingly. Bear in mind it is more imprevious sieve he has done that

:22:01. > :22:04.time. Number of changes, in the braking zones for Formula One,

:22:05. > :22:09.electrical systems to control the brake balance, a much bigger

:22:10. > :22:14.recoverable energy part of the engine. This doesn't look good. That

:22:15. > :22:20.is Kevin looking like he is getting out. A technical issue for McLaren.

:22:21. > :22:24.He without would have been out by now. He has not set a time. It looks

:22:25. > :22:29.as though he won't have the opportunity. The body language says

:22:30. > :22:32.it all. He is not going back out. Kevin Magnussen, I wonder if Vergne

:22:33. > :22:38.is going to go out. We would expect him to do a lap. Where ever Vergne

:22:39. > :22:44.he is gettings a tenth place penalty. Magnussen will be starting

:22:45. > :22:47.15th on the grid. Allowing for any other penalties that come along,

:22:48. > :22:52.that is not what he would have wished for. At Red Bull, let us

:22:53. > :22:56.listen top Ricciardo. RADIO: We are not going to run

:22:57. > :22:59.again, we are not running again. That is because they don't need to,

:23:00. > :23:04.because Ricciardo is third, Vettel is fourth. They are comfortably in

:23:05. > :23:07.the top ten, with quite a gap over themselves and Raikkonen in fifth

:23:08. > :23:12.place, the Lotus of Grosjean, the other Ferrari of Alonso, who may not

:23:13. > :23:17.be quite as safe and secure there. . Looking at the best sectors

:23:18. > :23:20.between Ricciardo and Vettel, there is half a second between them and

:23:21. > :23:26.they are nip and tuck in the first and second sectors, so we can safely

:23:27. > :23:28.assume there is more performance to come from Vettel, but Ricciardo

:23:29. > :23:33.looking very solid there in third place at moment. Remember how few

:23:34. > :23:38.laps Vettel has done, he lost all of the Friday running, they had an

:23:39. > :23:42.electrical problem which required the replacement of the wiring loom

:23:43. > :23:45.and he only did four laps and that I were four installation laps on

:23:46. > :23:50.Friday, had to sit out the rest of the day and watched the cars on

:23:51. > :23:56.circuit for much of the rest of the day to see who he could learn.

:23:57. > :24:01.Felipe Massa is out on track so he is eighth, is ninth. Both in the top

:24:02. > :24:06.ten but will they stay there? We picked up radio comment from Jenson

:24:07. > :24:16.Button. I like the use of termination, he said take a look at

:24:17. > :24:20.differential. It sound like a bit of Ron speak. The elusive apex.

:24:21. > :24:24.Let us see whether they can try and correct that and make it easier for

:24:25. > :24:30.Button to get to where he needs to be.

:24:31. > :24:34.Jumping out of the car is Vergne. That is interesting, so he is not

:24:35. > :24:38.going to set a time that, surprised me there. What news have you got

:24:39. > :24:43.Tom? An update on Kevin Magnussen for you. It is a power unit issue

:24:44. > :24:47.for him, which has given him an early bath. The team are looking

:24:48. > :24:52.into the exact cause of the problem, but that is what what that he have

:24:53. > :24:56.told me. It covers a multitude of season, it could be electrical,

:24:57. > :25:01.battery, it could be something to do with the turbo, there are so many

:25:02. > :25:06.parts of testify power unit now, but Felipe Massa. It could just be the

:25:07. > :25:10.starter battery. It could. Raikkonen keeping out of the way as former

:25:11. > :25:14.Ferrari driver Felipe Massa continues on in the Willemia,

:25:15. > :25:21.Hulkenberg has just improved by the way, he is eighth now on a 1: 27.6,

:25:22. > :25:30.but what a tight group that is from Raikkonen, 1: 27.4. All the way

:25:31. > :25:34.down, 1: 28.8. A slightly bigger gap to Gutierrez. I think Gutierrez is

:25:35. > :25:37.the one that is likely to lose out. Might expect Kvyat to go a fraction

:25:38. > :25:43.faster I think. Might expect Kvyat to go a fraction

:25:44. > :25:48.Kevin Magnussen taking the walk down the pit lane. A requirement for all

:25:49. > :25:54.the drivers to be weighed or during qualifying if they go out. That is,

:25:55. > :25:57.it is embarrassing to walk down past the garages, helmet under your arm,

:25:58. > :26:05.knowing you want to be out there playing racing driver, but you are

:26:06. > :26:12.not going to get any of that. Massa improves to -- improves to fourth.

:26:13. > :26:21.It means Williams have a car able to outqualify Ferrari. That will give

:26:22. > :26:27.them that boost. Susie wolf who will be here late later. She has been out

:26:28. > :26:31.on track watching in detail what the drivers are doing here to make sure

:26:32. > :26:35.he is fully clued up to get out in the car this week. Now, Valtteri

:26:36. > :26:41.Bottas is also on a lap. He has gone, he has done a personal best in

:26:42. > :26:45.the first sector, trying to match that time that Felipe Massa has just

:26:46. > :26:49.done, up into fourth place, needs to be up there, this keep Williams with

:26:50. > :26:55.a chance of scoring points and maintain his record of scoring

:26:56. > :27:00.points this year. Massa, a former pole winner and race winner here, I

:27:01. > :27:08.am sure is getting a few little tips by studying his data this year. Yes

:27:09. > :27:13.Massa has good speed. Always has had good single lap speed in the race, 2

:27:14. > :27:18.consistency wasn't as strong as Michael, when he was at Ferrari but

:27:19. > :27:23.he is is a great benchmark, lovely guy and that does tell us that in

:27:24. > :27:28.this interteam battle if can match him or beat him it confirms his

:27:29. > :27:32.speed. That half second could prove to be crucial. It is going to be

:27:33. > :27:36.very tight in that area. I think Massa will be safe but might have a

:27:37. > :27:43.few nerve-wracking moments. Grosjean, cross the line goes sixth.

:27:44. > :27:49.That pushes down to eighth. Perez is in the drop zone with Button. Two

:27:50. > :27:53.are already out, Magnussen and Vergne. Button goes ninth. He is sup

:27:54. > :27:57.there are to the moment. Alonso is in a dangerous place in tenth. He

:27:58. > :28:01.has not improved on that lap. He can't improve, so really is it

:28:02. > :28:06.Perez, I think the only one and Perez is not on a quick lap. So it

:28:07. > :28:10.is not going to change, Alonso by the skin of his teeth, just scraping

:28:11. > :28:13.through there, in tenth place, and Raikkonen a bit quicker in that

:28:14. > :28:18.session this time, but Alonso has made it through in the top ten, and

:28:19. > :28:25.we now know that Nico Hulkenberg is out, Perez is out and he has pulled

:28:26. > :28:30.off, sorry he has, sorry outside his pit box, both Force Indias not quite

:28:31. > :28:34.as strong as we have seen, they do have good race pace but not in the

:28:35. > :28:38.top ten. Kvyat, faster than Gutierrez in the end but he is out

:28:39. > :28:44.and the other two names on that list, the two that didn't set a time

:28:45. > :28:47.at all, they are Kevin Magnussen and Jean-Eric Vergne. In theory they

:28:48. > :28:51.would line up new the order of the time they set this morning, which

:28:52. > :28:55.would give the advantage to Magnussen, and of course he will

:28:56. > :28:59.have the advantage any way, because Vergne has that ten place penalty,

:29:00. > :29:03.so Vergne will go from 16th to the very back. Not exactly 26 cars on

:29:04. > :29:10.the grid but Vergne will go right to the back of the field, and he will

:29:11. > :29:17.behind Maldonado, although will he? Maldonado didn't even set a time. In

:29:18. > :29:23.actual fact, although you want to qualify as far up as you can, if you

:29:24. > :29:29.want to be mid grid, at the back you can avoid any incident that happens

:29:30. > :29:34.at turn one. We have seen concertina effect, not so much in one but as

:29:35. > :29:39.they go into two. Well, Saubers both out as we have confirmed. Gutierrez

:29:40. > :29:51.in 14th position. Not able to really challenge for the top ten, we have

:29:52. > :29:55.our top ten line up now. Williams did separate the two Red Bulls,

:29:56. > :30:01.Lotus in the top ten, Romain Grosjean, what a boost that will be.

:30:02. > :30:06.We have also got Raikkonen, Bottas, Button to look forward to.

:30:07. > :30:12.Well, interesting second qualifying session, Eddie - Alonso just making

:30:13. > :30:16.the cut, that is unlike him. Great news for Grosjean, disappointing for

:30:17. > :30:22.Nico Hulkenberg. I am not so sure, Suzi. I think Force India have a

:30:23. > :30:26.great race pace. If ever you did not make the top ten, it is sensible to

:30:27. > :30:30.realise that 11 is the best place, you can make all the changes you

:30:31. > :30:34.want and have an extra set of tyres. I think they have been

:30:35. > :30:40.extremely cunning. If they planned it, they plundered brilliantly! 11th

:30:41. > :30:43.and 12th here with the tyre choice, this is the perfect place for them.

:30:44. > :30:49.They would not have been much further up the grid. So want to look

:30:50. > :30:54.out for tomorrow. I think so, very clever. Disappointing for Kevin

:30:55. > :31:00.Magnussen, a power unit problem, absolutely infuriating. Yeah, it is

:31:01. > :31:05.always better to come from behind and sort of move your performance

:31:06. > :31:09.up, and when you start in a place like Australia, so strong, you

:31:10. > :31:14.finish second, on the podium, and you think, this is all in front of

:31:15. > :31:20.me, easy PC, go ahead and make sure you maximise on the results, then

:31:21. > :31:25.heartbreak for him. He will have to do a lot of soul-searching, how am I

:31:26. > :31:29.going to help the team? But the team has let him down, because the power

:31:30. > :31:34.unit we were talking about, I am not sure what that means these days, but

:31:35. > :31:39.for sure he was unable to show what he's capable of, and we know he is a

:31:40. > :31:45.strong driver. Let's hope we will see more of the good stuff, we can

:31:46. > :31:49.hear from now. A frustrating way to end your Saturday, what was the

:31:50. > :31:55.problem? I don't know yet, I will have to go back and find out. It is

:31:56. > :31:59.something to do with the power unit, I did not have full power. A

:32:00. > :32:04.shame, because I think the team has made an improvement on the car for

:32:05. > :32:08.this weekend, and it would have been nice to show the improvement. It did

:32:09. > :32:16.not happen, so I will have to try and do something tomorrow. Could you

:32:17. > :32:21.feel the problem in Q1? It was there in Q1 as well. Yeah, a shame. That

:32:22. > :32:26.is how it is. Well, let's have a little bit of Max

:32:27. > :32:31.Chilton, he did really well today, qualified in 18th, he will go from

:32:32. > :32:38.17th with the Vergne moving back on the grid. The art qualified his

:32:39. > :32:44.team-mate, a big deal for him. -- he out qualified. I must declare my

:32:45. > :32:48.position, I am a big fan of Max, a lot of people have questioned

:32:49. > :32:54.whether he should be in Formula One, but he has demonstrated that he

:32:55. > :32:59.should be. A strong performance today, you must be pleased. Very

:33:00. > :33:05.happy, it is not easy with the downforce we have got to get a clean

:33:06. > :33:08.lap together, and I got two really clean laps, and I think it is

:33:09. > :33:12.showing that our updates, I know it was a small update, but it is

:33:13. > :33:16.working, and we have pulled away from Caterham. So a strong

:33:17. > :33:20.qualifying from all of us, but I'm really happy with my lap. An

:33:21. > :33:28.interesting story, he keeps his chin up, very positive, they are at the

:33:29. > :33:31.back but they have their own battle going on, doing well this weekend.

:33:32. > :33:34.He has come through the national system of British Racing Drivers'

:33:35. > :33:42.Club and I think he is a great example to young drivers. A good

:33:43. > :33:47.ambassador, time now for Q3. The final shoot out in the top ten,

:33:48. > :33:49.pole position coming up. The Williams team hope to see both of

:33:50. > :33:54.their cars moving up onto the grid, Williams team hope to see both of

:33:55. > :33:58.Felipe Massa went well in that session, Bottas is in there as well.

:33:59. > :34:04.We gather Jean-Eric Vergne decided not to run at all in that session to

:34:05. > :34:10.save tyres and put himself in better shape, starting from the back of the

:34:11. > :34:15.field. He could not have gained a lot by moving up a couple of places,

:34:16. > :34:20.and he saves themselves a new set of tyres. Good tactics from Toro Rosso,

:34:21. > :34:24.but the question up front, which of the two Mercedes, that has to be the

:34:25. > :34:29.question, rather than Will they get beaten, because their margin is too

:34:30. > :34:34.great - which of them is going to be on pole? It does look like the

:34:35. > :34:39.momentum, in terms of balance today, is with Nico Rosberg, and a lot of

:34:40. > :34:45.it is coming in the last sector, that is the difference will stop so

:34:46. > :34:49.Nico will be sitting quite comfortable, he just needs to

:34:50. > :34:53.replicate that. Lewis will be studying, can we change on this card

:34:54. > :35:00.to give me the confidence to let it flow? It is going to be interesting,

:35:01. > :35:04.Nico has the momentum at the moment. In terms of tyres, Rosberg and

:35:05. > :35:09.Hamilton still have a couple of sets of the new medium tyres, so they

:35:10. > :35:13.will get two runs in this final part of qualifying. Grosjean has already

:35:14. > :35:18.used one extra set, he will be able to use a scrub sets to do his first

:35:19. > :35:23.run, and then he will have an opportunity on a brand-new set.

:35:24. > :35:28.Fernando Alonso has two sets available, so he has the edge in

:35:29. > :35:32.terms of tyre available at the over team-mate Jennie Raikkonen, that

:35:33. > :35:40.could be important. The middle sector of his last lap was not

:35:41. > :35:45.strong, it was certainly not his fastest sector of qualifying so far,

:35:46. > :35:47.but it looks like Raikkonen was more comfortable in that Ferrari.

:35:48. > :35:54.Sebastian Vettel, is he going to be able to come good here this weekend?

:35:55. > :35:59.Let's sea, the first of the action starting with Nico Rosberg coming

:36:00. > :36:04.straight out onto the track, not waiting for the track to develop.

:36:05. > :36:08.Hamilton has just been out of his pit garage, heading down the pit

:36:09. > :36:12.lane now, so we will get the first comparison between these two. We

:36:13. > :36:17.have only had one dry qualifying session this year, in Bahrain, and

:36:18. > :36:21.that was Nico's pole position, the only time he has beaten Lewis

:36:22. > :36:25.Hamilton. When you have an inter-team battle, it is one thing

:36:26. > :36:28.going up against a team where you do not know their strategy, but for

:36:29. > :36:36.Nico and Lewis, they will be sitting there going, what is he thinking of

:36:37. > :36:40.doing? Is he going straightaway? Oh, he has gone, I want to go. Suddenly

:36:41. > :36:47.you have information available on one of your competitors. Tomasz.

:36:48. > :36:54.Fascinating, guys, I have just been peering into the Mercedes garage,

:36:55. > :36:59.and Lewis was sat with his gloves wresting on his steering wheel,

:37:00. > :37:04.looking at telemetry. There was no closing of the eyes, visualising the

:37:05. > :37:10.lap, and I'm guessing it was Nico's telemetry. David, you have been in

:37:11. > :37:13.this situation several times, you and Mika Hakkinen had three

:37:14. > :37:18.successive 1-2 start on the grid, you have been in exactly the same

:37:19. > :37:23.position. That is what I am saying, you know, knowing that your direct

:37:24. > :37:26.competitor for pole position, the man who stands between you and

:37:27. > :37:30.victory is your team-mate, you have so much more information on the guy

:37:31. > :37:34.you are competing against than another driver in another team. That

:37:35. > :37:39.is a benefit to you but also to him, and the psychological roller-coaster

:37:40. > :37:43.that you go through when you deliver the lap and you think, that was good

:37:44. > :37:48.enough, and then your team-mate goes quicker, which happened very often

:37:49. > :37:54.in my case, you go, oh, right, where did he find that time? You have the

:37:55. > :37:58.opportunity, looking at an overlay, to see the differences between your

:37:59. > :38:01.performances, so it gives you a great insight during that qualifying

:38:02. > :38:07.session. They will be asking things like, what is the other driver

:38:08. > :38:10.doing? They will not be saying, what is Nico doing, what is Lewis doing?

:38:11. > :38:13.They emotionally detached the fact that they have known each other

:38:14. > :38:17.since they were kids and just referred to the other person has a

:38:18. > :38:22.number. Here we are watching Rosberg, and we have got a problem

:38:23. > :38:29.for Vettel. Sebastian Vettel, now... Is that a technical issue?

:38:30. > :38:36.TEAM RADIO: I have no drive, sorry, no drive. Is weekend and his season

:38:37. > :38:41.goes from bad to worse, the car has come to a complete stop. Red flag,

:38:42. > :38:45.bad news for both of them, particularly for Rosberg, although

:38:46. > :38:48.they both have a set of tyres to use. It will not have compromised

:38:49. > :38:52.them as much as it might have done, but they have put a lot of energy

:38:53. > :38:56.through those tyres, they have to back off. They are past their best.

:38:57. > :39:02.Full Sebastian Vettel, it looks like he will end of last of the top ten,

:39:03. > :39:06.unable to set a time, and it did not take long. The car went down the pit

:39:07. > :39:11.lane, the first of the two Red Bulls, he started to pull over as he

:39:12. > :39:17.was going down the pit lane. Very unusual. Whether it was

:39:18. > :39:22.straightforward, wanting to let his team-mates go, you would not take to

:39:23. > :39:27.the track. Once you are out on track, it can't be recovered. We

:39:28. > :39:32.will find out in time, he will not be taking part in any more of this

:39:33. > :39:35.session. Tom, did you hear any strange noises from the car? Was he

:39:36. > :39:41.just moving out of the way of Ricciardo? He was moving out of the

:39:42. > :39:51.way, but I heard the Reds dive. I thought the anti-stall had kicked

:39:52. > :39:56.in. -- the revs die. I looked up when I heard the engine almost crank

:39:57. > :40:00.out, and it was Vettel. Interesting, because he managed to get down to

:40:01. > :40:05.the first couple of corners. Christian Horner joins us from the

:40:06. > :40:10.pit wall, any information as to what has happened? He lost second gear as

:40:11. > :40:13.he came out of the pits, we thought it was something electrical, but

:40:14. > :40:19.unfortunately have to he exit it at the pit lane, he has lost all drive

:40:20. > :40:23.into turn three. It looks like potentially something mechanical. So

:40:24. > :40:28.strange, this, you have had such a tough weekend, so many dramas in

:40:29. > :40:32.testing - you seemed to have sorted all those remarkably well going into

:40:33. > :40:37.the first few races, but race five, all going wrong. Sometimes it goes

:40:38. > :40:42.that way, doesn't it? Nothing has gone his way so far this weekend, he

:40:43. > :40:46.was dialling himself back in nicely. But you know, it will give him

:40:47. > :40:53.plenty to do tomorrow. Still in there with Daniel, he has done a

:40:54. > :40:56.super job in Q2. Just quickly, before we get back into the action,

:40:57. > :41:04.do you think Daniel can apply pressure to the Mercedes? Not unless

:41:05. > :41:11.they make a mistake. We are about six tenths off. Let's see what

:41:12. > :41:15.happens in Q3. Sebastian Vettel's car is carried away, up to Ricciardo

:41:16. > :41:19.now. A good point, if they make a mistake, because the pressure is on

:41:20. > :41:23.now, they have lost their first run, and now everybody will just

:41:24. > :41:28.have one run. They have lost a bit of their advantage. As the lap was

:41:29. > :41:32.unfolding, Rosberg was slightly quicker than Hamilton, and even

:41:33. > :41:37.though they have not completed the lap because of the red flag, they

:41:38. > :41:40.will be aware of that. Again, it will take a superhuman effort from

:41:41. > :41:45.Hamilton to overcome Rosberg, I think, this afternoon. Interesting

:41:46. > :41:48.looking at the speed trap figures as we are in the Ferrari garage at the

:41:49. > :41:52.moment, looking at our screens, the speed trap that is - I would not

:41:53. > :41:56.have expected the two Renault engined cars at the top of the speed

:41:57. > :42:02.trap, the Toro Rossos of Kvyat and Vergne. A replay of Hamilton, that

:42:03. > :42:12.was Vettel, he was right in front of Hamilton. I got held up by the Red

:42:13. > :42:17.Bull there. Sorry, Lewis, I had all kind of lights flashing. I think the

:42:18. > :42:22.stewards will look at that, but they will look at the evidence

:42:23. > :42:25.presumably. In fact, Vettel has parked the car in the safest place,

:42:26. > :42:31.on the right-hand side of the circuit. If somebody has an issue in

:42:32. > :42:35.turn one, it could have been in a more dangerous place. Lewis's call

:42:36. > :42:39.was absolutely correct, Sebastian has obviously reacted, not because

:42:40. > :42:41.they are connected on the radio channel, because they are

:42:42. > :42:45.super-sensitive to not getting in a way of a car. What that does mean,

:42:46. > :42:51.what I said earlier, Nico looking quicker again in the opening part of

:42:52. > :42:56.the lap, at least Lewis has that knowledge that his first sector was

:42:57. > :43:01.not a clean one. Interesting, looking at our tyre data, it looks,

:43:02. > :43:04.yes, they have both gone out on the tyres they have already done that

:43:05. > :43:09.lap on that they were doing, they are still going to get two runs

:43:10. > :43:13.here, one quick lap on those tyres that were already under load, and

:43:14. > :43:18.then the new set at the end of the session. Jenson Button, of course,

:43:19. > :43:23.in the top ten here, unlike team-mate Kevin Magnussen, to move

:43:24. > :43:27.that car up the field. We know he will not be tense, because Sebastian

:43:28. > :43:32.Vettel is going to be starting tenth, so now we are battling for

:43:33. > :43:37.the top nine positions. Fernando Alonso on circuit as well, we

:43:38. > :43:42.believe he has two said of tyres to use, so we could see something

:43:43. > :43:46.impressive from Alonso. -- two sets. Kimi Raikkonen has a great

:43:47. > :43:50.record at this track, a little quicker than him in the last

:43:51. > :43:53.session, we want to see this kind of seesaw between Alonso and

:43:54. > :43:58.Raikkonen, something we have not seen much of it so far this year.

:43:59. > :44:07.Raikkonen kit out qualifying on one occasion, but generally Alonso has

:44:08. > :44:10.had the edge. -- Raikkonen did outqualify him. We have seen

:44:11. > :44:16.Raikkonen, when he is comfortable, he is one of the exceptional

:44:17. > :44:21.drivers, and if he falls out of that zone, he does seem to lose a bit of

:44:22. > :44:25.performance. That is what really sets people like Alonso apart - they

:44:26. > :44:29.never seem to have bad performances, irrespective of how good or bad the

:44:30. > :44:36.car is. They are consistent in what they deliver. Hamilton goes on to

:44:37. > :44:41.the lap. Rosberg is ahead of him. I wanted to check, Rosberg is slightly

:44:42. > :44:46.ahead of him. Only about a corner and a half further up the road. So

:44:47. > :44:50.we will get the first slit times coming up. Rosberg has gone through,

:44:51. > :45:00.not particularly quick. He had taken more out of the tyre, it is almost

:45:01. > :45:08.exactly matched by Hamilton to 6 thousandths of a second. Let us see

:45:09. > :45:13.how the middle sector unfolds. It is very much a lap of three sector,

:45:14. > :45:17.different demands for the driver, and mentally, I would say that the

:45:18. > :45:21.first sector gives you the biggest pressure, but a you know you have to

:45:22. > :45:25.get turn three right, one of the fastest corners in the track. Into

:45:26. > :45:31.turn ten where we join the car at this point, a lot of pressure on the

:45:32. > :45:35.braking zones and Hamilton a big quicker, and -- a bit quick e

:45:36. > :45:39.Rosberg, this is where he has been gaining the advantage, nice and

:45:40. > :45:45.tidy, about the drive off this corner. A bit of oversteer.

:45:46. > :45:51.So let us see what the lap time is. He sets initial benchmark 1: 26.5.

:45:52. > :45:55.Not as quick as the previous Q2. Let us see Hamilton. He goes a bit

:45:56. > :45:59.quicker. He has the edge, but remember, that was on the used tyre,

:46:00. > :46:05.but different again and it was in the final sector. That was a tidier

:46:06. > :46:08.final sector for Lewis Hamilton. Alonso is working the wheel hard. He

:46:09. > :46:13.comes through and drives for the line. He goes third. Look at the

:46:14. > :46:18.gap, it is a second between himself and Rosberg. 1.3 to Hamilton. That

:46:19. > :46:22.is the measure of the gap Mercedes have over Ferrari. What about Red

:46:23. > :46:28.Bull? We think it will insert itself between Mercedes and Ferrari. Can

:46:29. > :46:35.Ricciardo deliver on that promise? Yes he can. A fair bit quicker than

:46:36. > :46:40.the Ferrari annal only a bit off the Mercedes but remember Mercedes

:46:41. > :46:43.weren't on a brand-new set of tyres. We will see Mercedes take that

:46:44. > :46:49.target out of reach when they put the new tyres on. Valtteri Bottas

:46:50. > :46:56.waiting patiently before he emerges from Williams. A nice little

:46:57. > :47:04.interteam rivalry between Bottas and his team-mate. Kimi Raikkonen, who

:47:05. > :47:08.won for Ferrari here, in 2008, won for McLaren in 2005. Let us see

:47:09. > :47:13.whether he can challenge the time Alonso has set.

:47:14. > :47:17.Former Ferrari driver Massa loving the Williams environment and the way

:47:18. > :47:23.everything is coming together. He is working with Rob Smedley who he

:47:24. > :47:26.worked with at Ferrari. Those two drivers Massa and Bottas are getting

:47:27. > :47:31.on well and the team is beginning to gel. Grosjean is the question mark,

:47:32. > :47:36.where is he going to put that Lotus. A new set of tyres, will they send

:47:37. > :47:45.him straight out? Yes, looking for clean track position. They are doing

:47:46. > :47:50.the same with Hamilton's car. To difference between the two cars.

:47:51. > :47:57.They started that session with enough fuel to be able to do the pit

:47:58. > :48:02.lane stop, so they burn another 1.6 or so kilos of fuel on the

:48:03. > :48:06.completing that single time lap. Alonso with a second set of tyre,

:48:07. > :48:10.that is his advantage over Raikkonen. He has to do it on one

:48:11. > :48:15.set. He hasn't got that opportunity to go and do a quick lap and bolt

:48:16. > :48:20.another set on and do a quicker lap. And that is Alonso's forte,

:48:21. > :48:24.especially at this track. He grabs the car by the scruff of the neck.

:48:25. > :48:28.Raikkonen, we will see how he responds to that, but wonderful last

:48:29. > :48:33.couple of minutes of qualifying coming up. We have the battle for

:48:34. > :48:36.pole, then the situation behind, it is Red Bull or Ferrari, which

:48:37. > :48:41.Ferrari is going to merge on top. What about the William, don't

:48:42. > :48:47.discount them. They could charge Ferrari, so maybe fifth, sixth place

:48:48. > :48:51.for Williams, you can see there is anxiety, trepidation as they get

:48:52. > :48:56.ready for the final flying lap of the Barcelona circuit. There we are

:48:57. > :49:01.watching Kimi Raikkonen. A big amount of oversteer as he comes out.

:49:02. > :49:06.This is what they enjoy, that single lap, maximum performance, everything

:49:07. > :49:11.the engine has got. Low fuel, new tyres and you have one lap to either

:49:12. > :49:15.be the hero you think you are or a zero if you drop the ball somewhere

:49:16. > :49:18.round the lap. We are watching Kimi Raikkonen, he is on his last flying

:49:19. > :49:22.lap. The one that counts here, he made a mistake out of the last

:49:23. > :49:26.corner which might have cost him a fraction, going on to the straight,

:49:27. > :49:29.although with these engines probably able to recover most of that, down

:49:30. > :49:34.the length of that straight. Now it is about the corners, and this

:49:35. > :49:39.twisty infield section, trying to carry as much speed as possible. Not

:49:40. > :49:47.run too wide. That looked very elegant. Tidy. It is relative to

:49:48. > :49:50.Mercedes but that puts him in Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull sector. You just

:49:51. > :49:55.see the confidence growing from Raikkonen. Head and the through

:49:56. > :50:01.nine. He looks happier with the car here than on several occasion. Again

:50:02. > :50:06.that lock up, you couldn't see it but hear it. And he tends to lock

:50:07. > :50:10.it. The camera was too tight on the cockpit for us to be able the see

:50:11. > :50:13.it. Let us see, Hamilton has gone purple in the first sector. Two

:50:14. > :50:17.tenths quicker than Rosberg. Hamilton is on a flyer. It looks as

:50:18. > :50:21.though Rosberg might be in trouble, because that is a very impressive

:50:22. > :50:25.first sector from Hamilton. So we watch Raikkonen come out of the last

:50:26. > :50:31.turn. Where will this put Kimi Raikkonen? Alonso has another lap to

:50:32. > :50:34.do. Raikkonen goes quicker than Alonso, but Alonso is about to

:50:35. > :50:39.start, well, he is on a quick lap. But Rosberg, here we go, he sup on

:50:40. > :50:43.the overall times of course, he will go fastest on this but Hamilton is

:50:44. > :50:46.quicker again in the middle sector, it is heading the way of Hamilton

:50:47. > :50:50.again, and I don't think that Rosberg is going to be able to

:50:51. > :50:56.deliver enough in this final sector, to challenge Hamilton. Let us just

:50:57. > :51:01.watch. Just hits the kerb a bit He realises the pressure is on, this

:51:02. > :51:05.lap that Hamilton is on, unless he makes a mistake he has done an

:51:06. > :51:09.amazing performance. Rosberg goes faster but where is Hamilton? Here

:51:10. > :51:17.he comes out of the last corner. It is Hamilton who takes pole position

:51:18. > :51:24.from his team-mate, by 0.168 of a second. His first ever pole position

:51:25. > :51:29.on this Barcelona circuit. His fourth pole position and it is 100%

:51:30. > :51:33.for Mercedes so far. Ricciardo, we are riding onboard with him. Bottas

:51:34. > :51:37.has got quicker than both Ferraris, and Lotus is quicker than both

:51:38. > :51:47.Ferrari, that is amazing. We wait to see, Alonso has crossed the line.

:51:48. > :51:50.Let us see where the lap is like. Valtteri Bottas, a star performer.

:51:51. > :51:56.Massa is about to cross the line and he can't respond to the pace that

:51:57. > :52:01.Valtteri Bottas has demonstrated on this occasion, and like Bahrain that

:52:02. > :52:03.was the other drive track qualifying we had, Valtteri Bottas has put it

:52:04. > :52:11.on the second row. RADIO: Nice work Lewis, that is P1.

:52:12. > :52:14.Star quality, to overcome the difficulties he has had all the way

:52:15. > :52:17.through qualifying and take the pole in the end, in fairness you did say

:52:18. > :52:22.that between sessions you thought this was going to be, you know,

:52:23. > :52:28.don't write off Hamilton, but that is a real blow for Rosberg. He was

:52:29. > :52:33.quicker at every point free practise every session until it counted.

:52:34. > :52:36.Hamilton has that ability to just pull something out of the bag when

:52:37. > :52:41.it counts. Hamilton ahead of Rosberg, it is a Mercedes one-two

:52:42. > :52:45.like last year, but roles reversed. Hamilton has taken pole from his

:52:46. > :52:50.team-mate. Ricciardo, a strong third for Red Bull, ahead of Valtteri

:52:51. > :52:55.Bottas for Williams, and they will be delighted. Williams beating Lotus

:52:56. > :53:00.and both Ferraris and Raikkonen outqualifying Alonso on this

:53:01. > :53:06.occasion, so that evens things up a bit between Alonso and Raikkonen so

:53:07. > :53:14.far this year, they had been 3-1. It is 3-2 to Alonso but Raikkonen

:53:15. > :53:18.faster. Button ended up eighth fastest for McLaren. Massa ninth. He

:53:19. > :53:22.will be disappointed. He was eight tenths slower tan his team-mate.

:53:23. > :53:27.Massa had been quicker throughout all the session, but Lewis Hamilton

:53:28. > :53:31.is the man who has done it again, pole position for Lewis Hamilton,

:53:32. > :53:35.and what a tremendous run he is on. Fourth pole position of the season,

:53:36. > :53:42.only beaten once, that was in Bahrain by his team-mate, and is now

:53:43. > :53:45.his 35th career pole position, he is only ten behind Sebastian Vettel

:53:46. > :53:50.which sounds like a big numbers if it carries on like this he couldn't

:53:51. > :53:54.match Vettel this year. That was a stunning performance, he kept his

:53:55. > :54:00.head, worked with the balance of the car, studied the data and delivers.

:54:01. > :54:04.Very carefully putting everything back together. Now he can Saturday

:54:05. > :54:08.to enjoy the moment. He is in such good form. So relaxed. Spending time

:54:09. > :54:14.between the previous Grand Prix and this one in Los Angeles, had some

:54:15. > :54:18.good time off and has come back refreshed, renewed and ready to take

:54:19. > :54:23.the Championship lead from his tame may -- team-mate. At the moment

:54:24. > :54:27.Rosberg is still the points leader. Getting weighed there and Lewis

:54:28. > :54:34.checking the sector times. Thatty with that. Interesting, Nico not

:54:35. > :54:38.looking back. He is reflecting on an opportunity missed. Fernando Alonso

:54:39. > :54:47.disappointing to see him start down in seventh place on his home turf.

:54:48. > :54:55.It would be a boost for Raikkonen to have a solid qualifying session, but

:54:56. > :55:00.well, you can't write Alonso out. Even from Sennath he could be

:55:01. > :55:03.leading the first corner. That is fourth position for Valtteri Bottas,

:55:04. > :55:07.and as I mentioned he has been in the points every time he was third

:55:08. > :55:12.on the grid in Bahrain, it is only his, another opportunity to be on

:55:13. > :55:15.that second row in the dry, he had a great qualifying in the wet but only

:55:16. > :55:22.the second time in the cry he has gone for a start on the second row,

:55:23. > :55:28.and I do wonder whether Massa might not have made a mistake, they were

:55:29. > :55:35.so clothe close and ended up quite a way off. Seven tenths alone. We will

:55:36. > :55:40.find out in due course. There may be some footage of a mistake but for

:55:41. > :55:44.Lewis Hamilton no mistakes after it looks like we might be in another

:55:45. > :55:52.Bahrain scenario. Lewis Hamilton snatched it back in the Voightle

:55:53. > :55:54.final run of Q3, and Ricciardo, another starring performance,

:55:55. > :56:00.Vettel, we weren't able to see what he could do because of his technical

:56:01. > :56:04.problem but Daniel keeps delivering He is in a happy place, the momentum

:56:05. > :56:08.is within him in the team. We haven't seen a clean run for

:56:09. > :56:12.Sebastian, but he is doing everything he would expect of a

:56:13. > :56:17.young driver, he has a great benchmark as a team-mate. No

:56:18. > :56:21.mistakes from Ricciardo. He is getting used to appearing in the

:56:22. > :56:26.post qualifying press conference and the post qualifying picture, the

:56:27. > :56:32.one-two-three the guys will be doing any moment now. No-one can get close

:56:33. > :56:35.to Mercedes in terms of outright pace, absolutely stunning stuff from

:56:36. > :56:39.Lewis Hamilton. He takes pole position here in bars back, it is

:56:40. > :56:43.another Mercedes one-two, the second of the season and the silver arrows

:56:44. > :56:47.remain unbeaten to the top spot in 2014.

:56:48. > :56:52.Is Incredible record, incredible season for Mercedes and it was said

:56:53. > :56:55.that it required a superhuman effort to take pole position from a

:56:56. > :56:59.situation that they were in, after it had been red flagged and that is

:57:00. > :57:04.what happened. Lewis Hamilton, Nigel Mansell is right, he is firing on

:57:05. > :57:08.all cylinder, isn't he. We talked about Nigel Mansell being the kiss

:57:09. > :57:13.of death, in this case, Nigel, well done you have spotted it. Spot on.

:57:14. > :57:18.Look, Lewis is in a different world. He feels so happy, we talked about

:57:19. > :57:22.the body language and everything about imhim, that swagger, style,

:57:23. > :57:26.and that is inner confidence, to be able do that time and time again,

:57:27. > :57:30.you can't do it unless the car is brilliant. The team is brilliant,

:57:31. > :57:34.the engine is brilliant and you are brilliant. That was an amazing show.

:57:35. > :57:38.What was interesting I thought when you talk about body language, Nico

:57:39. > :57:42.Rosberg said I need to take the momentum back and he looked as if he

:57:43. > :57:46.might be able to do that. He is always calm but he looked slightly

:57:47. > :57:50.out of kilter in China, perhaps because of what happened in Bahrain,

:57:51. > :57:54.he seemed settled but Lewis has managed to grab it again The

:57:55. > :57:57.advantage may sway in the race, I think that in terms of controlling

:57:58. > :58:03.the tyres, in terms of a management of the car, in terms of the

:58:04. > :58:08.structure in terms of how mentally he approaches the thing, it might go

:58:09. > :58:12.back a touch in Rosberg's favour, so don't rule out the result because

:58:13. > :58:17.we... I wondered what you were saying. I think you might have a

:58:18. > :58:21.very job on our hands where theration, because for sure Rosberg

:58:22. > :58:24.is probably a more thinking driver, in terms of the outright speed,

:58:25. > :58:29.there is no doubt, I don't think there is anyone in this paddock at

:58:30. > :58:32.this moment that can come close to what Lewis is able to deliver on a

:58:33. > :58:36.single lap. However, we know that the race and the points are all in

:58:37. > :58:40.the race and Rosberg will be there. Of course, the qualifying session

:58:41. > :58:43.was changed because of what happened to Sebastian Vettel. Let us look

:58:44. > :58:50.that the. You probably saw him walk past us over our shoulder. Here he

:58:51. > :58:55.is. Moved over to let Ricciardo out. He couldn't find second queer gear

:58:56. > :58:59.and let us hear what he had to say about the situation. I imagine you

:59:00. > :59:02.are more disappointed than anyone who is still driving out from. What

:59:03. > :59:09.was the problem and when did you first know about it? Well, Q3 to be

:59:10. > :59:13.honest. Left the garage, and lost drive in second gear, yeah.

:59:14. > :59:19.Obviously was clear there was a problem, but I still had third gear

:59:20. > :59:25.and above so I thought I could imagine the lap without second gear,

:59:26. > :59:30.but by turn one I lost all the other gears, so I couldn't do much. I

:59:31. > :59:33.manage the polite word for what you have gone through this weekend is

:59:34. > :59:38.character building, what might have been out there, did you get a feel

:59:39. > :59:42.of what was achievable? It was a tricky day, the track is sliply,

:59:43. > :59:49.especially if the tyres don't last the whole lap. It is close, as you

:59:50. > :59:54.can see, after Mercedes, so, I think I needed more laps, I was getting

:59:55. > :59:59.more and more in the rit -- rhythm. I messed yesterday so I thought I

:00:00. > :00:09.could be worth shooting for P3. That is what we had in the car, so,never

:00:10. > :00:13.got that far. Yeah, so frustrating when it is not your fault. They have

:00:14. > :00:19.got a lot of work to do tonight. Yes, but we shouldn't be beating him

:00:20. > :00:25.up too badly. The hazard four very good years, four World Championships

:00:26. > :00:29.to reflect on. -- he has had. But he also knows he has the ability, he

:00:30. > :00:34.knows he can win championships, and that is up in the mind, which is so

:00:35. > :00:39.important. He will be back. Still a man to be feared. Every moment. He

:00:40. > :00:46.will unleash something when we are least expecting it, and we will be

:00:47. > :00:50.saying, why did we ever doubt him? Somebody else who lots of McLaren

:00:51. > :00:55.fans really want to get the car is sorted out and bring it up to how

:00:56. > :01:00.good we know the power unit is, Jenson Button, eighth today. Not

:01:01. > :01:03.good enough, is it, really? For the team, the engine, what they have

:01:04. > :01:09.got, when they consider that everyone is trying to see what is

:01:10. > :01:13.equal here, and the engines are equal. Jenson knows he can carry the

:01:14. > :01:19.fight to Lewis, and he is saying to himself, what must I be doing? Lewis

:01:20. > :01:22.is the guy, you know, we fought each other in a championship winning

:01:23. > :01:28.team, but I am still here, he has gone, he is riding high and I am

:01:29. > :01:32.struggling. Mentally, he must be beating himself up. It seems like he

:01:33. > :01:37.can only operate the car in quite a small window, let's get his

:01:38. > :01:42.thoughts. You didn't sound 100% happy on team radio, was eighth as

:01:43. > :01:46.good as you could get? If you are 100% happy, you should be the

:01:47. > :01:52.quickest out there, so you will always complain about balance, that

:01:53. > :01:56.is how you make it go quicker. Yeah, P8, it is OK. All the way through

:01:57. > :02:02.qualifying, such low grip for everyone, it was difficult to really

:02:03. > :02:07.balance the car. But in the end, it wasn't too bad. So yeah, it is all

:02:08. > :02:11.right, and we have saved a set of options. Tomorrow will come down to

:02:12. > :02:16.a lot of strategy, is that a place you can gain places in the race?

:02:17. > :02:20.Yeah, but we are still not sure what to do yet! It is tricky, especially

:02:21. > :02:23.with the way the circuit is, and at the moment there is pretty good grip

:02:24. > :02:28.out there, the monthly low degradation, but we might have to

:02:29. > :02:39.change our strategy with the weather. -- presumably. It is

:02:40. > :02:45.unlikely to reign in Spain, the son is shining on some drivers more than

:02:46. > :02:48.others, but we can hear from the other drivers now. -- sun.

:02:49. > :02:55.You saved the best until last, Lewis. It has been a tough day, and

:02:56. > :02:58.Nico has been driving really well through P3 and all through

:02:59. > :03:02.qualifying, and so I didn't know whether I would be able to get it,

:03:03. > :03:08.but right at the end I had to just eat out absolutely everything and

:03:09. > :03:12.more from the car. Coming here this weekend, we obviously did not

:03:13. > :03:15.nowhere everybody was going to be. But to see the development that is

:03:16. > :03:21.going on, the hard work that has gone into getting the car ready for

:03:22. > :03:24.this week is just inspiring to me. A really big thank you to the team, to

:03:25. > :03:30.have the kind of performance we have, I have never really known that

:03:31. > :03:34.before. Still, very difficult out there, the track conditions are

:03:35. > :03:39.pretty poor. But I am overwhelmed, so happy. Well done. Nico, coming to

:03:40. > :03:44.you, Lewis was looking strong yesterday, but he were fastest in Q1

:03:45. > :03:49.and Q2, you found something overnight full stop given how it has

:03:50. > :03:52.ended up, are you disappointed? Definitely very disappointed. I

:03:53. > :03:58.don't particularly enjoy coming second! To Lewis! Both, there we go,

:03:59. > :04:06.just answering the question, you know! Yeah, so I am disappointed,

:04:07. > :04:11.yes, but in the end, it was a good lap from me, Lewis did a better

:04:12. > :04:14.job, so from that point of view that is the way it is. Anyway, it is

:04:15. > :04:20.still all to play for tomorrow. Second place is only a little bit

:04:21. > :04:23.away from optimum, because all it takes is a good start tomorrow and

:04:24. > :04:27.then I am in the lead again, you know, so that is the good thing

:04:28. > :04:32.about it, and that is why it is all to play for. Thank you. Coming to

:04:33. > :04:37.you, Daniel, another top three, a good day for you personally,

:04:38. > :04:43.problems for Sebastian in Q3, a fairly big margin between Lewis and

:04:44. > :04:48.yourself. Yeah, I think we, again, the best of the rest, but that is

:04:49. > :04:53.not quite good enough. You know, we are still a second off, and I

:04:54. > :04:57.thought my lap was not too bad. I was expecting a smaller gap than

:04:58. > :05:01.that. But you know, obviously I think we have made some

:05:02. > :05:04.improvements, but obviously, they being Mercedes have done as well, so

:05:05. > :05:08.we would have liked to have closed that, but we have still got some

:05:09. > :05:17.work edibles. On a positive note, yeah, we are a clear third today, we

:05:18. > :05:23.had quite a good buffer to P4. For sure, we want to get closer to the

:05:24. > :05:26.front two. Good attitude from Daniel Ricciardo,

:05:27. > :05:30.David has raced down from the commentary box, not a bead of

:05:31. > :05:34.sweat! It is the story of Mercedes, but Daniel Ricciardo, we have talked

:05:35. > :05:39.about it being a superstar that has pitched up at Red Bull, and once

:05:40. > :05:43.again he said he was frustrated that they are off the pace, but he should

:05:44. > :05:48.be happier that he is the best of the rest. Unquestionably. The start

:05:49. > :05:54.of his season, his career with Red Bull Racing, he is not new to Red

:05:55. > :05:58.Bull, having been with Toro Rosso, and their junior programme before

:05:59. > :06:00.that, but he's fulfilling the potential and the opportunity.

:06:01. > :06:05.Sebastian Vettel was at Toro Rosso, he joined Red Bull for a period of

:06:06. > :06:09.dominance. We are seeing this young guy just catching the wave, and it

:06:10. > :06:13.will be interesting to see just how the season develops, and how he

:06:14. > :06:18.continues to develop as a racing driver and where it takes him. And

:06:19. > :06:21.shuffling out of the way, Fernando Alonso is trying to get past,

:06:22. > :06:26.everyone goes into total panic in Spain! Valtteri Bottas, will have a

:06:27. > :06:32.little look at the end of his lap, he has also been a superstar today,

:06:33. > :06:37.a terrific lap. We know he has got good speed, Frank Williams himself

:06:38. > :06:44.said he saw similarities between his speed and approach to a young Senna,

:06:45. > :06:48.which is fairly high praise! It has been difficult for him, in the

:06:49. > :06:52.Williams, in the last couple of years to step forward, but with

:06:53. > :06:57.Felipe Massa he has a good team-mate, someone who will work

:06:58. > :07:00.with him, a good benchmark, and the Mercedes power, a car that is

:07:01. > :07:06.working reasonably well, and he has pulled a lap together, and that is

:07:07. > :07:08.what he needs to continue to do. As Williams look at their development,

:07:09. > :07:15.ultimately, whether they are the team he will stay with in the

:07:16. > :07:18.future. Congratulations, a really strong performance, a big smile on

:07:19. > :07:24.your face and quite rightly so. Yeah, it feels really nice, quite a

:07:25. > :07:29.tough weekend for me until qualifying. We made some big set of

:07:30. > :07:34.changes for the qualifying, and it really made a big difference, and I

:07:35. > :07:41.got much more confidence in the car, and got there in the end. So

:07:42. > :07:46.happy for people. How do you think it will transfer into the race?

:07:47. > :07:50.Normally it is difficult to overtake, so I am looking

:07:51. > :07:54.forward... It is going to be close, of course Mercedes is unbeatable,

:07:55. > :07:59.Red Bull is very quick, but after that it should be a good race.

:08:00. > :08:04.Interesting stuff, he qualified well, as did Romain Grosjean. We

:08:05. > :08:09.can't go away without talking about him, fantastic, Lotus really

:08:10. > :08:13.struggling but he is leading them. The need to, because the team needs

:08:14. > :08:17.an injection of life and good fortune. -- he needs to. There were

:08:18. > :08:22.times that we called into question his ability to drive and race well,

:08:23. > :08:25.Grosjean, in the past, but in recent years and months he has developed

:08:26. > :08:29.into a very strong driver and this was a strong performance from a car

:08:30. > :08:34.that, in my opinion, should not be in this position. They were ahead of

:08:35. > :08:38.the Ferraris. Before we talk about them, we can you from Fernando

:08:39. > :08:45.Alonso. I know you like the circuit and love home advantage, but the

:08:46. > :08:47.fans will need to give you an awful lot of energy to get that Ferrari

:08:48. > :08:50.across the line tomorrow. Definitely, it will be a tough

:08:51. > :08:57.race, no surprises about that. We have been fighting with low grip

:08:58. > :09:00.overall, and it is the same for everybody, because we see the times

:09:01. > :09:07.are slow for everyone. But we didn't manage to get some comfort in the

:09:08. > :09:12.car, and tomorrow, starting seventh is not going to be easy, but that is

:09:13. > :09:19.the position we have to deal with. We were not quicker than that, and

:09:20. > :09:25.hopefully tomorrow week -- we can recover some pace. The rear end is

:09:26. > :09:32.his the one where we have been making six set of changes and still

:09:33. > :09:37.not in a position to have a solid rear. At the moment, that is the

:09:38. > :09:42.main problem. Of course, it is all about the race tomorrow, and about

:09:43. > :09:47.the Ayrton Senna interview, the piece that Eddie did, there is more

:09:48. > :09:53.of that online if you want to look. Join us tomorrow at 1:15 on BBC One,

:09:54. > :09:58.and we will have all of the action for you. Catch the Catalan raise

:09:59. > :10:01.with us tomorrow. The sun was certainly shining on Lewis Hamilton

:10:02. > :10:05.today, his fourth pole position of the year. It is about the Mercedes,

:10:06. > :10:07.but the gloves are off and it is game on. Thank you for watching,

:10:08. > :10:38.thanks, guys, see you tomorrow! Rosberg goes found this disc, but

:10:39. > :10:40.Hamilton takes pole position from his team-mate! -- goes fastest.
