:00:50. > :00:59.Here we go. What a moment. You little beauty! This, to win. There

:01:00. > :01:10.it is. A life changer! Finally he gets the green jacket! It was right

:01:11. > :01:13.here 12 months ago that Adam Scott made a major breakthrough for

:01:14. > :01:19.himself and his country, becoming the first Australian to win a green

:01:20. > :01:24.jacket. He is for ever associated with this, one of the most iconic

:01:25. > :01:30.venues of any sport in the world. Welcome back to the Masters

:01:31. > :01:38.tournament, played in golfing perfection here in Georgia. This is

:01:39. > :01:45.the first year without an injured Tiger Woods, but that did not stand

:01:46. > :02:02.in the way of the traditional opening morning. Ladies and

:02:03. > :02:09.gentlemen, Mr Arnold Palmer. Ladies and gentlemen, from South Africa, Mr

:02:10. > :02:45.Gary Player. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr Jack

:02:46. > :02:50.Nicklaus. Oh, boy! I meant to do this for real again, and Mike? ! --

:02:51. > :03:09.am I? ! Ladies and gentlemen, the 2014

:03:10. > :03:15.Masters has officially begun. Everyone have done. And we would

:03:16. > :03:31.love to see all three of them walking down that their weight. Jack

:03:32. > :03:39.hit the ball the furthest. Adam Scott flirted with the bunkers,

:03:40. > :03:44.finishing just in the pine straw. A wry smile from his caddy.

:03:45. > :03:51.Traditionally, the reigning champion accompanies the amateur champions.

:03:52. > :04:02.In this case it is Matt Fitzpatrick. He made double bogey. Scott had a

:04:03. > :04:09.chance to overtake Tiger Woods. He had the perfect approach to the

:04:10. > :04:14.first green. A stunning effort. His first birdie of the week. So, we

:04:15. > :04:17.still have half of beef will to head out. This was how the early

:04:18. > :04:53.leaderboard looked. Let us head out onto the fairways of

:04:54. > :04:57.a cluster to join our commentators. At the 13th of it is Kevin Stadler

:04:58. > :05:22.with a birdie chance. He has gone to 2-under par. Matthew

:05:23. > :05:32.Fitzpatrick now. The youngest on the field. Delightfully done. A shaky

:05:33. > :05:43.start, but this brings a smile to his face. A big day for him. Jonas

:05:44. > :05:48.Blixt at the 13th. He is playing off the side hill. He is 3-under par. He

:05:49. > :06:01.cracks one away. That looks like a beauty. Of the slope. Watch this for

:06:02. > :06:12.a bit of pace. It is too far to go when. The green looks a little bit

:06:13. > :06:24.shaky. Time for an eagle. This is the short par-4 four Rory McIlroy.

:06:25. > :06:35.Delightfully done. Good nerve. A rousing reception for him. After

:06:36. > :06:41.that wonderful second shot at the 13th, this for an eagle? No, he

:06:42. > :07:16.didn't do it. He stays 3-under par. Jimenez now. 1-under par. You little

:07:17. > :07:17.beauty! 2-under par. He looks like a grand prix driver, doesn't he? Well

:07:18. > :07:58.done. Right in the middle. Well done.

:07:59. > :08:11.4-under par. He leads the way. The 1988 champion Sandy Lyle is third.

:08:12. > :08:19.First birdie at the 2nd. And a birdie at the 3rd again. Can Jimenez

:08:20. > :08:59.do it again? He can! 3-under par. Difficult to get the ball on this

:09:00. > :09:10.one for Adam Scott. He has done it. He is about eight yards wide. Nicely

:09:11. > :09:25.judged from the defending champion. Rory McIlroy at the 5th.

:09:26. > :09:42.A beauty therefore Rory McIlroy. -- there for Rory McIlroy.

:09:43. > :09:58.Unlucky. A little bit too much pace. Back to 3-under, but still a good

:09:59. > :10:17.opener. Anything over 14 inches is definitely not a tap in. In she goes

:10:18. > :10:42.for Adam Scott. 2-under par. And there is the leaderboard.

:10:43. > :10:56.Early days yet. We are in the opening hours of the first day of

:10:57. > :11:04.the 78th Masters. Sandy Lyle full. Not another one. That is a rare

:11:05. > :11:16.birdie you get at the 4th. That is a dream start for him. 3-under par. I

:11:17. > :11:24.can't believe it. He played in 1988. Jimenez at the 9th for a birdie.

:11:25. > :11:47.4-under! Kevin Stadler for eight par at the

:11:48. > :12:03.last. Playing with his dad, the 1982 champion. His dad will be pleased.

:12:04. > :12:19.Adam Scott playing up to the eighth. Look at that!

:12:20. > :12:41.A slightly disappointing finish for Jonas fixed. -- Jonas Blixt.

:12:42. > :12:49.Kevin Stadler had one of the best rounds earlier on. Letters here what

:12:50. > :12:55.he had to say. What was it like playing Agusta today with all be

:12:56. > :13:02.rich family history. It was great. There was a long lead up. How

:13:03. > :13:12.pleased were you with your performance? All in all, it was

:13:13. > :13:24.about what I deserved, so it was a good start. It has been pretty tidy

:13:25. > :13:28.so far for Adam Scott. The under for the defending champion. Very nice.

:13:29. > :14:07.-- 3-under. He drops a shot. Where is that one of two? Everyone

:14:08. > :14:16.is stunned. -- where is that one of two?

:14:17. > :14:31.A nice recovery there. That means 1-under par.

:14:32. > :14:52.Stricker now. This is for par. Very nice. He remains 2-under par.

:14:53. > :14:58.McIlroy, seeing if he can save his par. I thought he had. That will

:14:59. > :15:01.feel like a couple of shots going there at the eighth, the par-5. Well

:15:02. > :15:07.within his reach. Slips back to 1-under par.

:15:08. > :15:13.The turtles basking in the sunlight in the back and a great round so far

:15:14. > :15:19.for Jiminez. Problems with this, though, for par.

:15:20. > :15:23.Over to the 6th, Stephen Gallacher, 172 yards, you have to go right at

:15:24. > :15:41.it. And that is fantastic. On the 12th. Jiminez, coming off the

:15:42. > :15:43.back of that bogey. 158 yards today, the pin is back right, a menacing

:15:44. > :15:58.par-3. Oh, stay there. Settle. Do a

:15:59. > :16:02.Couples. Hang on... Do anything. It is gone. It is all coming rather

:16:03. > :16:07.unstuck for Jiminez around Amen Corner.

:16:08. > :16:13.Gallacher seizes the opportunity to make birdie after that terrific shot

:16:14. > :16:20.into number six. Well holed, 2-under par.

:16:21. > :16:25.Looking mightily impressive, the defending champion. Had a loose

:16:26. > :16:32.opening drive today but since then, very, very solid. It is a quick putt

:16:33. > :16:40.down there, but it is another chance for Adam Scott.

:16:41. > :16:47.Gary Woodland for birdie on the 15th. The long hitting Woodland.

:16:48. > :16:57.Well done, there. No one hit more greens in regulation

:16:58. > :17:03.than Adam Scott last year. When he won, he won on this green. Look how

:17:04. > :17:09.quick that putt is. Beautifully judged, with the long stick. Adam

:17:10. > :17:13.Scott heads to 4-under par. Out in front.

:17:14. > :17:17.So that is the way it sits at the moment. Adam Scott is two shots

:17:18. > :17:22.ahead of that group. Kevin Stadler and Jonas Blixt have finished their

:17:23. > :17:29.rounds. Stephen Gallacher on his debut, going well. Fred Couples, has

:17:30. > :17:32.he ever played badly at Augusta? Patrick Reed alongside Rory McIlory.

:17:33. > :17:35.The youngsters with different levels of experience around here. Sandy

:17:36. > :17:39.Lyle at 1-under as well. Very good from the veteran. Matt Kuchar,

:17:40. > :17:44.1-under, another man who has been favoured.

:17:45. > :17:52.Bill Haas. That is well holed. A difficult putt. He gets to 3-under

:17:53. > :18:05.par. Up the hill on the 11th firing

:18:06. > :18:17.downhill towards the green. That is a beautiful shot. Aiming

:18:18. > :18:19.probably just about there, not flirting with the flag, but he is on

:18:20. > :18:30.song today, Adam Scott. To the opening hole, Phil

:18:31. > :18:41.Mickelson. Three-time champion. Crowd favourite.

:18:42. > :18:47.Just loves it here. That is always a good sign, when you

:18:48. > :18:57.bend over that quickly to grab your tee. Yes, and that's perfect.

:18:58. > :19:03.Adam Scott is fairly close, he will get his putt. Fitzpatrick, doing

:19:04. > :19:08.very well since that bogey at the first. -- double bogey. Very

:19:09. > :19:10.impressed with this performance from the US amateur champion, the man

:19:11. > :19:22.from Sheffield. To the 15th, Fred Couples, to get to

:19:23. > :19:29.2-under par. That is beautifully done. He knew it was in.

:19:30. > :19:47.Murmurs from the crowd. And that wasn't close. A couple of people

:19:48. > :19:50.have been fooled here and Adam Scott starting to struggle, perhaps.

:19:51. > :19:57.Louis Oosthuizen for birdie after a beautiful wedge shot at the eighth.

:19:58. > :20:05.Yes, nicely holed. 2-under par for Oosthuizen and a good start.

:20:06. > :20:14.Adam Scott's third shot, he found the water off the tee at the 12th.

:20:15. > :20:19.Hoping to drop just the one stroke. His first error of the day.

:20:20. > :20:25.Snedeker at the 15th for birdie and this is fast.

:20:26. > :20:41.Slow down. It is actually gathering speed. Oh, nice!

:20:42. > :20:51.Oh. Amazing. Second-most difficult hole today, so far, the 12th, and

:20:52. > :21:06.Adam Scott drops two. Back to 2-under. What a shame, just

:21:07. > :21:09.a slight misjudgement with his first one.

:21:10. > :21:22.Very difficult hole to get close to. You've got to go right at it, got to

:21:23. > :21:32.be pin high. And that is fantastic. What a great shot by Snedeker.

:21:33. > :21:38.The 18th, 3-over par bogey putt for Ian Poulter, not been a game he

:21:39. > :21:46.would have liked but in the bottom of the cup. 4-over par 76.

:21:47. > :21:54.Snedeker to convert for birdie after that terrific shot. Look at the

:21:55. > :22:00.break. Oh, yes! Just hangs on. Snedeker to 3-under par.

:22:01. > :22:08.HAZEL IRVINE: This is Ian Poulter's tenth attempt at the Masters. He

:22:09. > :22:12.missed the cut last year and he has got real work to do if he wants to

:22:13. > :22:16.be here for the weekend after a 4-over par 76. Let's hear from Ian.

:22:17. > :22:22.What happened today that you can put right tomorrow? I need to make some

:22:23. > :22:27.birdies, dead simple. I actually didn't do that much wrong today. Got

:22:28. > :22:31.a little unfortunate at eight, kind of pulled my tee shot at 13 and you

:22:32. > :22:34.don't have to do that much wrong when this golf course to be

:22:35. > :22:44.punished. -- around this golf course. I hit pretty good recovery

:22:45. > :22:47.shot and I didn't take my 8-foot par opportunities, to keep my round

:22:48. > :22:51.together. If I do the good stuff like I've done today and take some

:22:52. > :22:54.chances, then I will get back in this tournament. Ian, thank you very

:22:55. > :22:56.much for your time. Good luck tomorrow. Thank you.

:22:57. > :23:05.Adam Scott for his two-putt birdie. Just just missed it. He looks so

:23:06. > :23:09.shocked there. That is a lost opportunity, after two fantastic

:23:10. > :23:14.shots, to get an eagle. Adam Scott walks off to par on the 16th.

:23:15. > :23:18.Disappointed. Almost on the verge of having to

:23:19. > :23:25.move this, Bill Haas, the camera angle is a little misleading. Coming

:23:26. > :23:30.up straight at it. That was an 8-iron he launched that right up in

:23:31. > :23:32.the air, right at it. And there is the release. Beautifully played by

:23:33. > :23:42.Bill Haas. McIlroy not laying up. A little bit

:23:43. > :23:45.further down than Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.

:23:46. > :23:52.He has hoisted it miles in the air going right to left. And a terrific

:23:53. > :23:59.shot from McIlroy, where Adam Scott was earlier. Chance for eagle for

:24:00. > :24:05.Rory. This for the round of the day so

:24:06. > :24:10.far, this for a 68 for Bill Haas. In she goes, out on his own, Bill Haas.

:24:11. > :24:14.Dropped a shot at the 17th, but that was his only blemish after his bogey

:24:15. > :24:18.at the first. Plenty of birdies in there as well. The putter was hot

:24:19. > :24:22.for Bill Haas today, he is the leader.

:24:23. > :24:30.McIlroy, then, eagle putt. We saw this for Adam Scott, his attempt

:24:31. > :24:37.wandered way off to the left. McIlroy seems to have judged it

:24:38. > :24:39.better. Beautiful putt. But look at it now. Leaves himself the uphiller

:24:40. > :24:46.for the birdie. Dubuisson, Victor, at the 6th.

:24:47. > :25:01.2-over. That isn't what the French were

:25:02. > :25:08.anticipating and hoping. But that is better. Spun out! Victor, that was

:25:09. > :25:14.some shot. So near. Have another look at this. Watch it bounce, jump

:25:15. > :25:25.and look, look, look. Ooh, unlucky. Unlucky. But a certain two.

:25:26. > :25:34.Garcia. On the seventh for his three. Yes, the putter continues to

:25:35. > :25:38.work. Garcia, many people tipping him to finally get the major. A

:25:39. > :25:42.couple of bogeys in there but three birdies.

:25:43. > :25:47.This tee shot of Dubuisson, without the pin in the hole, it would have

:25:48. > :25:51.been in for a one. But the man from Cannes, or from Nice now, in the

:25:52. > :25:52.south of France, in his first Masters, gets back to 1-over par

:25:53. > :26:01.after six. Now, can McIlroy get his birdie on

:26:02. > :26:11.the 15th? Monster drive, towering second

:26:12. > :26:13.shot, two good putts. That is how you treat the par fives on the back

:26:14. > :26:25.nine. Back to 2-under par. Snedeker on the 18th, he of the

:26:26. > :26:29.short, quick swing. Ooh, it just... That is a round of 70. He is the 6th

:26:30. > :26:42.player thus far to score 70. Oosthuizen at the 12th. He and his

:26:43. > :26:44.caddie, much deliberation about the club. Why, I don't know, there is

:26:45. > :26:54.not a breath of wind. It should be simple enough, the

:26:55. > :26:59.160-odd yards today. And it came up at least a club short. I find it

:27:00. > :27:00.staggering that they should make such elementary errors on such a

:27:01. > :27:09.perfect day. Bill Haas with that 68, son of Jay

:27:10. > :27:14.Haas, who finished second 20 years ago. -- finished third. His great

:27:15. > :27:21.uncle won the 1968 Masters. Defending champion Adam Scott with

:27:22. > :27:25.three holes to go. Rory McIlory on the first page of the leaderboard

:27:26. > :27:28.with two holes to go. Now, from the drop zone or thereabouts, Louis

:27:29. > :27:41.Oosthuizen in the water, we saw him in the water, Scott in the water, a

:27:42. > :27:43.few players misjudging it. So that will be to drop just one shot.

:27:44. > :27:57.Lee Westwood on the 6th, 1-over par. They like it. Online. And a beauty.

:27:58. > :28:05.Very difficult to get close at the 6th hole. Fine shot.

:28:06. > :28:13.Oosthuizen to drop one at 12. Found the water. A few have done today.

:28:14. > :28:19.First real mistake today, going well, despite that bad back of his.

:28:20. > :28:23.Lee Westwood for a birdie at the 6th.

:28:24. > :28:34.Smooth, smooth, smooth. And beautifully done. A two.

:28:35. > :28:53.Another one he has just launched straight up in the air. Oh, boy.

:28:54. > :28:56.That little bit of extra grass caused him to misjudge that. That is

:28:57. > :29:27.quite a bit uphill. Mickelson on what has become the

:29:28. > :29:44.difficult seventh. That is gone. It is all the way off the green.

:29:45. > :29:58.It is extremely difficult to judge. Plus, they tend to cut the fringe

:29:59. > :30:05.grass towards you and the ball hops and skips and it makes it difficult.

:30:06. > :30:24.As you said, very difficult to judge. Well, that is just OK.

:30:25. > :30:35.Mickelson making a mess of the seventh. Just barely off the green.

:30:36. > :30:53.He pitched it all the way of the green. This is a triple bogey seven.

:30:54. > :31:16.Well done on the 14th two Adam Scott for the 2-part par.

:31:17. > :31:31.Not bad. He got off to a slightly slow start with a double bogey at

:31:32. > :31:49.the 1st. The seventh green is proving troublesome for Justin Rose.

:31:50. > :32:00.He seemed to get a nice, clean contact. And excellent shot from

:32:01. > :32:14.there. Not the easiest of two putts. Adam Scott, just the one

:32:15. > :32:20.blemish, but a tidy start to the defence of his Masters title? Can he

:32:21. > :32:27.go back to back? Adam, many people would be happy

:32:28. > :32:33.with an opening rounds of 69 at Agusta. What do you think? It was

:32:34. > :32:42.great. I played really well. I love the couple out there, but I am not

:32:43. > :32:47.complaining. What was it like playing a competitive round as the

:32:48. > :32:52.defending champion? It was great. I enjoyed every moment of it. The

:32:53. > :32:54.applause was just a little bit more than ever before. It was certainly

:32:55. > :33:11.appreciated. I had a great time. This looks pretty good. No, it just

:33:12. > :33:55.carries on that little bit extra. Patrick Read. Frustrating finish for

:33:56. > :34:00.him. Bogey, bogey, bogey. Not the cleanest scorecard ever, but it is a

:34:01. > :34:12.dream come true for Patrick to get to play in the Masters. Just a bit

:34:13. > :34:36.of a rough finish. Burst time he has ever three parted the 18th.

:34:37. > :34:50.There is a sort of deathly hush now around the 18th. Dinner will taste a

:34:51. > :35:14.lot better if this goes in. Raking part, 71. -- breaking par, 71.

:35:15. > :35:30.The British amateur champion. Well done to Eric Porteous. It is back to

:35:31. > :35:36.4-over. And on this opening day it is the

:35:37. > :35:47.31-year-old from North Carolina Bill Haas who leads the way. He has made

:35:48. > :35:52.a very good start. 18 of them are under-par and Marie McIlroy has

:35:53. > :35:56.started with a round under-par as well. Let's get his thoughts on

:35:57. > :36:03.that. 71 seems a good score. How do you

:36:04. > :36:13.assess it? 71 was pretty good today. It was a difficult day, especially

:36:14. > :36:17.for a Thursday. The greens have not got that fast, but they are drying

:36:18. > :36:25.out and getting faster, especially with the wind position, anything on

:36:26. > :36:36.the part is great. Could you feel the greens trying out? Yes, you

:36:37. > :36:44.really could. From the 14th and 15th, you could feel them drying

:36:45. > :36:52.out. How much do you have two brain in your natural attacking instinct

:36:53. > :37:03.out of respect for Agusta? A lot. I did a good job of that today. What a

:37:04. > :37:18.scene that is. Stephen Gallacher is having a shot of the green. That is

:37:19. > :37:28.a gem. What a wonderful shot. 19-year-old Matthew Fitzpatrick had

:37:29. > :37:34.a tough start alongside Adam Scott, but one or two shining moments.

:37:35. > :37:40.Let's hear from him. Quite simply, how was that? It was

:37:41. > :37:46.tough. After my double bogey on the first, it was hard to get back. Just

:37:47. > :37:51.a birdie on the second calmed my nerves a bit. There were some shots

:37:52. > :38:10.in the middle of the round that cost me. A bit disappointing, but fairly

:38:11. > :38:23.happy. Oh, no! Slightly longer and much more difficult. It has been an

:38:24. > :38:37.untidy round for a couple of the players.

:38:38. > :38:53.Inside lift. He was raised there. A birdie, and he deserved a birdie. He

:38:54. > :39:02.moves into bread figures. In she goes for the Frenchman! A birdie on

:39:03. > :39:08.the ninth hole. He is not to be denied here. That is the way to

:39:09. > :39:31.finish. Back to level in his first Masters. Steady, steady!

:39:32. > :39:41.Treacherous. This is fiddly for the Dustin Johnson. Not too pretty so

:39:42. > :39:48.far. That is very well done. Very well done indeed. Not much of a

:39:49. > :39:59.raw, the crowd is a long way away, but that was very well done indeed.

:40:00. > :40:35.This ties in for a birdie to go to 3-under. -- Louis Oosthuizen.

:40:36. > :41:02.Are you kidding me? Yes! A miracle. What a hits-macro! -- what a putt!

:41:03. > :41:13.That was quite remarkable. Come home in 30 now, Phil.

:41:14. > :41:21.It is worth another look. It seems to have gone past the hole here.

:41:22. > :41:30.Watch how it turns right and comes back on itself and almost like Tiger

:41:31. > :41:37.at the 16th. He can't believe it either. A wonderful look of

:41:38. > :41:56.amazement on his boyish face. And it is a three. It jolly well is! That

:41:57. > :42:08.was just fantastic. What a putt. A longish bunker shot now forced even

:42:09. > :42:17.Gallacher. That is terrific. That was well judged. Bubba Watson at the

:42:18. > :42:35.13th. It just notched its way to the

:42:36. > :42:47.right. The greens have had a lot to do with today's high-scoring.

:42:48. > :42:56.Two players have broken 70. I thought there would be a whole

:42:57. > :43:07.gaggle of them under 70. Very good first round. 70 and a quarter

:43:08. > :43:31.Stephen Gallacher. -- 71 fourth Stephen Gallacher. Oh, my goodness!

:43:32. > :43:44.There is a raw for you! That is a guaranteed crystal. Fantastic

:43:45. > :43:58.therefrom standing by. -- San mean by.

:43:59. > :44:11.The difficult birdie opportunity, but he has done it. Louis Oosthuizen

:44:12. > :44:26.to save par. Oh, no. He has given it a wrap.

:44:27. > :44:35.He totally misjudged the speed on the first one and misread the

:44:36. > :44:49.second. A disappointing bogey for Louis Oosthuizen.

:44:50. > :45:00.Marc Leishman to get into the red figures. Beautifully done. And Marc

:45:01. > :45:03.Leishman onto 1-under par. Oosthuizen's second shot. Maybe the

:45:04. > :45:11.finest swinger of the golf club in the game today. That is effortless

:45:12. > :45:23.power. Well judged. Perfectly pin high.

:45:24. > :45:28.Dustin. Something went wrong with his drive. He's duffed it. He's

:45:29. > :45:36.chunked it. We talked about this earlier, maybe the most difficult

:45:37. > :45:39.third shot in of golf. Off a down slope, an awkward yardage and

:45:40. > :45:45.sometimes it can make a fool of you, even the best players. That was

:45:46. > :45:46.ugly. Oosthuizen played a terrific second shot here, now a great

:45:47. > :45:55.opportunity for birdie. This would be a wonderful round for

:45:56. > :46:07.Oosthuizen. Get in. Yes, indeed. Oosthuizen with

:46:08. > :46:11.the closing three and that will give him a round of 69, only the third

:46:12. > :46:17.man to score under 70 after Bill Haas and Adam Scott. And for a man

:46:18. > :46:19.who has been really struggling with a back injury, that is wonderful

:46:20. > :46:34.stuff. He went back to a yardage he was

:46:35. > :46:36.much happier with. He made the mistake of laying up too close, he's

:46:37. > :46:46.going to pay the price. HAZEL IRVINE: Louis Oosthuizen has

:46:47. > :46:48.had an absolutely dreadful year, with cortisone injections in his

:46:49. > :46:53.back, he has been fighting injury and, in fact, hardly played at all

:46:54. > :46:58.in the majors of 2013. He missed the cut here 12 months ago. So it is

:46:59. > :47:01.terrific to see the return to form of a former Open champion.

:47:02. > :47:09.3-under today, how pleased are you with that? Very pleased, a good

:47:10. > :47:12.start, but a lot of golf to go. The greens were really, really slick

:47:13. > :47:17.this afternoon, so you can expect the next three days to be really

:47:18. > :47:23.firm and fast so you have got to get yourself in the right spot.

:47:24. > :47:32.Dustin on the 15th. This for six, though. Paying the price for a

:47:33. > :47:36.horrible third shot, little wedge shot, just chunked it, very heavy

:47:37. > :47:38.into the water, and this is two shots on a hole where you would

:47:39. > :47:42.expect to pick up. Bernhard Langer, the evergreen

:47:43. > :47:50.Bernhard. Second to 17. Bubba Watson, the chance of a three

:47:51. > :48:10.at 15. It will be a birdie. And the

:48:11. > :48:15.champion from two years ago is looking mighty fine.

:48:16. > :48:24.Now, Mickelson, let's see how deft his hands are. Down the slope. It

:48:25. > :48:33.needs to go. It will gather pace. Beautifully judged by a man who has

:48:34. > :48:41.been round this course 100 times before and more.

:48:42. > :48:47.Bubba Watson, just hung it out there with his eagle putt but a birdie,

:48:48. > :48:53.and the winner of 2012 goes 3-under par.

:48:54. > :49:00.Mickelson for his birdie. A little pitch down to here.

:49:01. > :49:08.So birdie on the 10th, birdie on the 13th. He has been clawing his way

:49:09. > :49:14.back in after that horror show on the seventh.

:49:15. > :49:18.Francesco Molinari playing well at the moment. This for a two on the

:49:19. > :49:34.16th. Molinari rolls it in. He is on an upslope and he has a

:49:35. > :49:36.little loft here. Has to be careful he doesn't pop it in the air too

:49:37. > :50:01.high. Very nicely done. Played it well. A

:50:02. > :50:04.magical break. He can't get out, he is stranded!

:50:05. > :50:13.Another massive tee shot from Bubba. His second at the 17th, coming from

:50:14. > :50:16.the ionosphere and landing. Like a bag of sugar. Terrific shot, he is

:50:17. > :50:20.playing some wonderful golf this afternoon. Only three players so far

:50:21. > :50:25.have broken 70 and he is well on the way to doing that.

:50:26. > :50:33.Westwood. What a birdie this would be. Turn. And look at that go. Look

:50:34. > :50:42.at that one go. Quick, staccato looking putting

:50:43. > :50:47.stroke. Difficult to read this one, very

:50:48. > :51:09.tricky to read. Has he read it? Well, Phil has battled his way back.

:51:10. > :51:10.He has left himself a tricky left-to-righter here for his par at

:51:11. > :51:28.the 14th. Shame. Second shot didn't deserve a

:51:29. > :51:36.dropped stroke but he goes to 2-over, par-5 to come.

:51:37. > :51:45.Now roll this one. Yes, gets his five. A little bit of luck and then

:51:46. > :51:47.a whole lot of skill deserved it. A working man's par, they used to call

:51:48. > :51:59.that. The difficulty of this one is it is

:52:00. > :52:01.on a downslope and some of the grass is quite tight and against you,

:52:02. > :52:10.perhaps. Mickelson tested. Mickelson's Masters is unravelling

:52:11. > :52:33.in the very first round. It is a rather sad end here at the

:52:34. > :52:37.18th for Bernhard Langer, his fourth shot. Going along so nicely. Get in

:52:38. > :52:41.there, Langer, what a finish. A smile from the 56-year-old. Level

:52:42. > :52:47.par round of 72 for the two-time champion, wonderful stuff. I think

:52:48. > :52:55.that is one of the rounds of the day, myself. Took five at 12,

:52:56. > :52:58.dropped two shots there, and to get round in level par, well, younger

:52:59. > :53:08.and more promising players are taking 76 and 77. Well done, young

:53:09. > :53:14.sir. Fifth shot coming up. It is a par-5...

:53:15. > :53:25.A chance. HAZEL IRVINE: Bernhard Langer, at

:53:26. > :53:28.56, coming home with 72, a remarkable finish, as you saw at the

:53:29. > :53:32.18th. He was in contention on the last day 12 months ago, do you

:53:33. > :53:35.remember? Let's hear from him at the start of this campaign.

:53:36. > :53:39.72, how good a score was that today? It was pretty good, it was tough out

:53:40. > :53:43.there today. The wind was swelling, as Augusta is known for, especially

:53:44. > :53:50.around Amen Corner. It got me today, I got wet, I was 3/411 and 12. I got

:53:51. > :53:55.a birdie on ten, that was a bonus. I am glad I got it together, I was

:53:56. > :53:58.ticked off, I had played ten holes solidly at 1-under and then blew

:53:59. > :54:04.three shots on two holes but I've fought back nicely and very pleased

:54:05. > :54:05.to finish on even par. What fresh horrors for Mickelson?

:54:06. > :54:19.This is to drop just one. Oh, dear. Hadn't had a bogey at the

:54:20. > :54:24.15th hole in the Masters since 2,000, an astonishing statistic --

:54:25. > :54:31.since the year 2000. He still won't have a bogey, it is a double bogey.

:54:32. > :54:33.A long way to go is the best way to look at it but two sevens on his

:54:34. > :54:43.card. Lee Westwood, this is sadly for a

:54:44. > :54:46.par. Way left, a whisker too hard. It stays out and they dropped shot.

:54:47. > :54:57.-- a dropped shot. Bubba Watson can tap this in for a

:54:58. > :55:05.bogey free 69. Terrific round of golf from Bubba today. Tied for

:55:06. > :55:13.second place with Adam Scott and Oosthuizen. That is a pretty clean

:55:14. > :55:17.scorecard, right there. As clean as it gets, three birdies and no bogeys

:55:18. > :55:22.for Bubba Watson. HAZEL IRVINE: In contrast to Watson,

:55:23. > :55:26.Luke Donald's round got worse. When he came off the 18th, a two shot

:55:27. > :55:30.penalty for grounding his club in a bunker at the ninth, so he would

:55:31. > :55:35.have to sign for an eight there and 7-over par round of 79 in total. As

:55:36. > :55:41.for his compatriot, Lee Westwood, this was a par putt at the 18th. He

:55:42. > :55:46.was in a greenside bunker earlier. So this one to finish off for an

:55:47. > :55:53.even par round. Just slide spy. So an opening round of 73, the man from

:55:54. > :55:58.Worksop appearing in his 64th major championship, a relatively clean

:55:59. > :56:02.round and clean trousers to after a flirtation with the creek earlier.

:56:03. > :56:06.Here is how he felt about it. I'm sure you will be annoyed at the

:56:07. > :56:12.bogey on 18, but had you think you played? I played well, really solid.

:56:13. > :56:17.If I can shoot a low score tomorrow, I am not far away, I can get into

:56:18. > :56:21.the tournament properly. It is always important to take moments of

:56:22. > :56:27.fortune here, you got one at 13. From your perspective, how important

:56:28. > :56:31.is it to make those kind? Well, you know, if you are going to score well

:56:32. > :56:36.around Augusta, you make the most of the par-5s, which I didn't today, so

:56:37. > :56:41.tomorrow, I will try and get two or 3-under on the par-5s. We watched

:56:42. > :56:45.your caddy with his head in his hands after you tried to jump the

:56:46. > :56:50.water at 13. All well after that? He doesn't realise how athletic I am,

:56:51. > :56:56.does he could mark that is a small leap for me. Well hopefully, a big

:56:57. > :57:00.leap up the leaderboard tomorrow. Bill Haas has made the greatest

:57:01. > :57:05.right up the leaderboard, he has when the FedEx cup here and knows

:57:06. > :57:09.how to handle pressure. He is ahead of the trio, a posse if you like,

:57:10. > :57:15.are major champions. Fred Couples, playing in his 30th Masters

:57:16. > :57:19.tournament. Rory McIlory is well positioned at 1-under par. There is

:57:20. > :57:23.a big group there. Further down, great news for Stephen Gallacher and

:57:24. > :57:27.Graeme McDowell, level par put him in that group. He shot a 72 today.

:57:28. > :57:30.And there is Jamie Donaldson of Wales, 1-over today. And Charl

:57:31. > :57:34.Schwartzel, playing his very first event as a new father,

:57:35. > :57:37.congratulations to the Schwartzels. So it has been a funny old day here

:57:38. > :57:42.at Augusta, intriguing nonetheless, and we have got so much to look

:57:43. > :57:44.forward to. In fact, it starts this evening, because later tonight,

:57:45. > :57:50.Radio 5Live will have live commentary of the second round from

:57:51. > :57:54.9pm. We will have day two's action tomorrow afternoon at 1:15pm.

:57:55. > :57:57.Thereafter, we will have live coverage of the all-important third

:57:58. > :58:03.and fourth rounds on Saturday and Sunday night. Staying in with us is

:58:04. > :58:06.a must on Masters weekend and, this year, will have even more live

:58:07. > :58:10.options for you to tailor your coverage just the way you like it.

:58:11. > :58:14.As the tournament reaches its climax this weekend, we will have seven

:58:15. > :58:20.live video streams available for your mobile, tablet, desktop and

:58:21. > :58:23.connected TV. Get closer to the world's best on the practice range,

:58:24. > :58:27.see the players through Amen Corner, follow the leading groups ball by

:58:28. > :58:31.ball or catch up as they reach holes 15 and 16. It is the US Masters as

:58:32. > :58:35.you have never experienced it before.

:58:36. > :58:39.HAZEL IRVINE: And after staying up late with us on Saturday night, we

:58:40. > :58:42.really hope you will make it an early Sunday morning as well,

:58:43. > :58:46.because the London Marathon starts at 8:30am on BBC One, with Mo Farah

:58:47. > :58:52.making his debut at the distance. Not to be missed either. So that is

:58:53. > :58:55.it on the day when only four men broke 70, despite perfect

:58:56. > :58:57.conditions. Mind you, it all adds up to the annual intrigue that is the

:58:58. > :59:00.Masters. Goodbye.
