:00:36. > :01:16.COMMENTATOR: Maybe... Yes! There it is! Yes, for Gary Player! Oh! What a

:01:17. > :01:35.shot. Absolutely incredible. A life changer. Yes! At long last. Oh! Wow!

:01:36. > :01:43.One of the greatest putts I've ever seen.

:01:44. > :02:08.the magic of the Masters, Amen Corner, Magnolia Lane, it is nearly

:02:09. > :02:12.in full bloom, and so Ken Brown and Peter Alliss. Nice to see you,

:02:13. > :02:18.always a great place and we never get tired of it, what makes it so

:02:19. > :02:23.special? It is the audacity of the club and the committee, in terms of

:02:24. > :02:28.changing things, this has been the same... I've been coming here so

:02:29. > :02:35.many years, everything has changed and nothing has changed, it is the

:02:36. > :02:38.boldness of it, the new press centre, and they just knocked 80

:02:39. > :02:45.houses down to make a car park, it is a fantasyland. It is. You

:02:46. > :02:49.appreciate horticulture, and you have done a great job of these

:02:50. > :02:56.borders, by the way! What about on the course? How fast are the greens

:02:57. > :03:00.this year? Not too fast at the start of the week and then they get faster

:03:01. > :03:03.and faster, drying out, they are pretty pacey, if you get the wrong

:03:04. > :03:08.side, they are like Greece lightning. You have experienced the

:03:09. > :03:12.beautiful brutality of this course and we understand it will be cool

:03:13. > :03:16.and breezy, with a north-westerly wind which could be into the faces

:03:17. > :03:22.of the players on the par fives, how tough will it be? It could be

:03:23. > :03:27.anything. The great thing about this course, I feel, it does not have

:03:28. > :03:32.much protection, there is no rough, a few ponds, if you go off the

:03:33. > :03:37.fairway, you can scramble down, but it is the size of the greens and the

:03:38. > :03:40.slopes and the pace, and where they have the audacity to put the flags,

:03:41. > :03:46.it's a nightmare, it can be a nightmare. If the wind is blowing,

:03:47. > :03:51.swirling around, club selection is pinpoint and it becomes a hard

:03:52. > :03:59.challenge. It will be tricky. It could be even more fascinating, and

:04:00. > :04:01.another huge question, what about the defending champion, Jordan

:04:02. > :04:05.Spieth, what did he serve up at the champions dinner? This is one of the

:04:06. > :04:13.great traditions, attended by so many winners of the green jacket.

:04:14. > :04:17.Jordan Spieth's choice of a Texan barbecue was no doubt readily

:04:18. > :04:24.appreciated. Tiger Woods, even though he was not going to be

:04:25. > :04:28.competing their share, and there was also so Nick Faldo. They had

:04:29. > :04:35.barbecued baked beans amongst other things. No wonder the wind is

:04:36. > :04:39.getting up! That was the appetiser before the main event tomorrow,

:04:40. > :04:43.Jordan Spieth will attend this week to become only the fourth man after

:04:44. > :04:49.Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods to come here and win the Masters back to

:04:50. > :04:58.back. -- attempt. He was at least dominant here 12 months ago. --

:04:59. > :05:00.utterly dominant. I was asked of my career had exceeded expectations

:05:01. > :05:06.from when I first turned professional, absolutely. I have the

:05:07. > :05:09.expectation of sitting here with what I've done on the golf course

:05:10. > :05:16.but I did not think it would come this soon.

:05:17. > :05:24.It is incredible. One of the best feelings I've ever felt. This was

:05:25. > :05:28.arguably the greatest day of my life will

:05:29. > :05:36.I will try to use last year as momentum. We know we are capable of

:05:37. > :05:44.playing this place, we have proven that in the last two years. I put

:05:45. > :05:48.high expectations on this week, I'm putting pressure on myself to

:05:49. > :05:53.contend my just like last year, and I feel I'm informed, as well. But it

:05:54. > :05:56.is also going to be a lot of fun walking these fairways and reliving

:05:57. > :06:05.those memories. The crowd, the echoes. How often do you get to see

:06:06. > :06:09.your name in the champions locker room at Augusta National for the

:06:10. > :06:18.first time? After its period sink the Sunday of winning, and wanting

:06:19. > :06:23.that to last four days -- after experiencing the Sunday of winning

:06:24. > :06:32.and wanting that to last for days. It was a pleasant surprise. Just the

:06:33. > :06:40.jacket itself, it provides motivation, it is not easy to get.

:06:41. > :06:42.It is worth noting, on the eve of his defence he is still out there

:06:43. > :06:50.practising his chipping and his pitching and his putting. Remember

:06:51. > :06:53.how emphatic his statement was largely, record-breaking win, you

:06:54. > :06:57.led from start to finish, equalling Tiger Woods lowest total of

:06:58. > :07:03.18-under, and he went on to win the US Open, as welcomer and five titles

:07:04. > :07:07.in an amazing season -- he led. Where did his achievement rank for

:07:08. > :07:14.you last year, Peter? One of those amazing bursts that are totally

:07:15. > :07:21.unexpected and you wonder why. Vijay Singh, he was 40 before it happened

:07:22. > :07:26.to him and then he won umpteen Majors. I think there are

:07:27. > :07:33.similarities between Jordan Spieth and Lydia Ko, who is top of the

:07:34. > :07:36.ladies. They both have unorthodox swings and mannerisms and they do

:07:37. > :07:44.things that are not supposed to work, especially Spieth. These are

:07:45. > :07:49.things which, over the years, you look for if you are having a touch

:07:50. > :07:54.of the matches, but he has made it work. Whether it will stay, only

:07:55. > :08:01.time will tell, but he and Lydia Ko, they have quirky touches and I find

:08:02. > :08:07.it fascinating. Lydia Ko has also just won be first of the women's

:08:08. > :08:12.Majors, by the way. -- the first. What about his lethal weapon last

:08:13. > :08:16.year? Time after time, it was putting with supreme confidence, his

:08:17. > :08:20.season last season was one of the greatest ever in golf and it was all

:08:21. > :08:27.down to this, everything he looked at found the bottom of the cup. Nine

:08:28. > :08:30.single putts each day, and these greens are very tricky, and so this

:08:31. > :08:35.was an amazing performance, ridiculous. Comparative frailty out

:08:36. > :08:41.there, it seems not to be so comfortable with his putting at the

:08:42. > :08:44.moment. Hardly a crisis, he won the first event at 13 at the park but do

:08:45. > :08:51.you think he will be there or thereabouts this year? -- 13-under

:08:52. > :08:54.par. You can never tell, he has played here twice and he has

:08:55. > :08:57.finished second and first so you have got to think he has a great

:08:58. > :09:04.chance, and he is still out there, working on his touch. One title he

:09:05. > :09:13.did not want this year is the par-3 contest, this is an old contest, and

:09:14. > :09:19.tradition which goes back to 1960. The par-3 competition which precedes

:09:20. > :09:24.the Masters is one of the great editions, first held in 1960 and it

:09:25. > :09:27.now draws large numbers of patrons and is widely regarded as a fun

:09:28. > :09:39.element in an otherwise serious week. -- great traditions.

:09:40. > :09:46.One player absent this year is Rory McIlroy, no one of the par-3 contest

:09:47. > :09:52.has ever won the green jacket, but he suggested that the competition

:09:53. > :10:01.was a distraction he could do without. But the addition did

:10:02. > :10:03.feature a host of golfing superstars accompanied by friends and family

:10:04. > :10:07.and large numbers of patrons gathered around the greens and they

:10:08. > :10:11.were hoping to see a few more additions to the 18 holes in one

:10:12. > :10:39.made so far in the event's history. COMMENTATOR: Truly 80 years young,

:10:40. > :10:47.Gary Player. CHEERING Can you do that? LAUGHTER

:10:48. > :10:57.Jack got one here last day, and there was one for Gary today. Jimmy

:10:58. > :11:03.Walker won the par-3 contest, 8-under par, with a score of 19 from

:11:04. > :11:07.nine holes, extraordinary. No winner of the par-3 has ever gone on to win

:11:08. > :11:11.the green jacket, though, in the same year, that is, and there was no

:11:12. > :11:15.sign of Rory McIlroy down there, because he decided to concentrate on

:11:16. > :11:23.the main event. He comes here for the second time to Augusta needing

:11:24. > :11:26.just the Augusta -- Masters title to complete the grand slam, and if he

:11:27. > :11:33.did that he would become the first European. I feel like preparations

:11:34. > :11:38.have gone well and I'm hitting the ball well. I'm trying to take it a

:11:39. > :11:43.bit more relaxed the issue, and I felt last year going into the

:11:44. > :11:46.tournament I was a bit on edge and so on trying to have more fun out

:11:47. > :11:52.there and not getting ahead of myself. Is it hard to relax when

:11:53. > :11:57.there is so much at stake? A grand slam. At this point there is no

:11:58. > :12:02.reason why you should not be relaxed. There are many different

:12:03. > :12:07.ways to pass my time, jigsaw puzzles, monopoly, at the house

:12:08. > :12:14.where we are renting, so there is fun stuff going on. As the week goes

:12:15. > :12:18.on in if I start to play well in the tournament, you will feel the

:12:19. > :12:26.pressure, it will be increasingly more difficult to stay relaxed but

:12:27. > :12:28.that is my goal, to play as if this is my first time here again and

:12:29. > :12:34.really take things in because this is special place. The experts say

:12:35. > :12:38.this is the tournament which technically should be the easiest

:12:39. > :12:42.for you to win, does it feel more difficult because this is the one

:12:43. > :12:46.you really want? I know this course suits my game and if I go out and

:12:47. > :12:50.play the way I know I can play, I can win on this golf course, and

:12:51. > :12:54.I've beaten everyone that I'm trying to beat this week. As long as I

:12:55. > :12:59.don't let the venue get the better of me and don't think about it too

:13:00. > :13:06.much, and don't think what if I win a green jacket? Just try and stay in

:13:07. > :13:12.the present. If I can do that, hopefully things will turn my way on

:13:13. > :13:16.Sunday. It took Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player three attempts to land

:13:17. > :13:22.the final bit of the Dix or, if you like, and this is Rory McIlroy's

:13:23. > :13:28.second attempt. -- final bit of the jigsaw. He solved the riddle of the

:13:29. > :13:34.par fives lasted, what is left for him to find June? He's a very

:13:35. > :13:38.instinctive player. At Augusta, if you get a bit quick, it can grab you

:13:39. > :13:45.very quickly, and when you look at his scores in recent years, each

:13:46. > :13:48.round, each year, you can see a poor round, and in the past five years he

:13:49. > :13:54.has had nine holes at 40 strokes each time. He has made a mistake and

:13:55. > :13:59.then tried to chase the golf course or cross with himself. Playing well,

:14:00. > :14:02.he is unbeatable, but he has got to avoid making mistakes and then

:14:03. > :14:06.compounding it by making another, and if he can do that this week, he

:14:07. > :14:10.is the best in the field, he has the ideal game and he will be tough to

:14:11. > :14:15.beat, but he has got to avoid the blemish here and there.

:14:16. > :14:21.Some players have come and never managed to get that final piece of

:14:22. > :14:27.the jigsaw. Lee Trevino was one. It reminds as how is damaging it is he

:14:28. > :14:31.is in this position. -- astonishing. He is on the verge of a career grand

:14:32. > :14:36.slam with three out of the four Majors. It is amazing that Tiger

:14:37. > :14:40.Woods has almost been forgotten. He was the most phenomenal player for

:14:41. > :14:48.20 years I have ever seen in that pack. He dominated. As Ken said,

:14:49. > :14:53.Rory McIlroy in full flow is absolutely magnificent. I have never

:14:54. > :14:58.seen anybody hit it so hard. I have never seen him finish off balance.

:14:59. > :15:06.He is there waiting for the photographer to go. It is truly

:15:07. > :15:12.amazing. He does get a bit hasty, at times. But to win the grand slam, he

:15:13. > :15:17.would probably be the British Isles greatest ever sportsman. That is

:15:18. > :15:21.where years. It could be a putter missed or a bit of luck. Rafael

:15:22. > :15:27.Cabrera-Bello, clattered into the trees at 18. And suddenly you have

:15:28. > :15:31.the jacket. Anything could happen, as we know. As you remember, Rory

:15:32. > :15:35.McIlroy came in here as world number one last year. Now third in the

:15:36. > :15:41.world behind Jordan Spieth and Jason Day. Between them they are the new

:15:42. > :15:47.big three. They have claimed five of the last six major titles. Justin

:15:48. > :15:52.Rose at number nine. Bubba Watson and Australia's Adam Scott are also

:15:53. > :15:56.firmly lodged in the world top ten. Adam's mate Jason is in the hottest

:15:57. > :16:01.form right now. Back-to-back titles into Augusta. And no wonder fellow

:16:02. > :16:08.Aussie Wayne Grady has a spring in his thong. There are five

:16:09. > :16:12.Australians in the field this week but let's look at two of them.

:16:13. > :16:16.Frankly, Jason Day is ranked the best player in the world. Last year

:16:17. > :16:22.was a breakthrough, winning five times, including his first major,

:16:23. > :16:24.the PGA Championship. Already this year he has won back-to-back. He

:16:25. > :16:30.took the Houston open and prepared mentally. It feels good to walk the

:16:31. > :16:34.ground at number one in the world. Once again, it has not changed to IM

:16:35. > :16:41.as a person. And what I have done as a player. -- who I am. I need to

:16:42. > :16:45.focus on still working hard, going through the process of what I did in

:16:46. > :16:50.the past to get to number one. And what I have done in the past to play

:16:51. > :16:53.well here as well. Some bookies have Jason has favoured but it has been

:16:54. > :16:58.14 years since the top player in the world has come here and won it, that

:16:59. > :17:03.was Tiger Woods back in 2002. I had a great run at the end of last year.

:17:04. > :17:11.Starting to have a great run here. I hope I can keep going through this

:17:12. > :17:20.week. It is three years since Adam gave Australia their first green

:17:21. > :17:25.jacket. Much has changed since. COMMENTATOR: Adam Scott! A life

:17:26. > :17:29.changer! The long shot he breaded back in 2013 has been banned but it

:17:30. > :17:35.has not stopped him. He has also won back-to-back this year. Personally

:17:36. > :17:40.these, the grass on the green and the speed of the green is more what

:17:41. > :17:48.I like to putter on than the slower Bermuda grasses. I am excited about

:17:49. > :17:53.this week and having my shorter putter put to the test and trying to

:17:54. > :17:57.embrace all of the challenges the Masters will throw at me. He has got

:17:58. > :18:05.Tiger Woods back on the bag. Steve Williams, they were together in 2013

:18:06. > :18:11.when he won it. Will there be another one for Adam, or will they

:18:12. > :18:15.be chasing Jason? Peter, what makes Jason Day the pre-eminent player in

:18:16. > :18:19.the world? He is a good-looking young fella, hitting its miles. I do

:18:20. > :18:23.not think I have seen anyone hit at it harder than he does. He takes 1

:18:24. > :18:31.million hours to play which is rather dismal. It is very exciting.

:18:32. > :18:34.The sport is in a very good place with young talent, boys and girls

:18:35. > :18:41.and it is a delight to be part of it. No longer an old man's game. He

:18:42. > :18:43.has Rory McIlroy's length with his iron play but also that Jordan

:18:44. > :18:49.Spieth perfection around the green as well. The full package right now.

:18:50. > :18:53.Winning six times in 13 starts and full of confidence. He has his a

:18:54. > :19:00.game. His confidence is best in the field. He is favourite coming in.

:19:01. > :19:04.Adam Scott, 35. How remarkable is it that three years after winning with

:19:05. > :19:09.a broom handle part, he is in the mix to do it with a short handle

:19:10. > :19:12.again? He can use it but he cannot anchor it. He has gone to the short

:19:13. > :19:17.one. He made a couple of tries before. He has found the secret and

:19:18. > :19:20.got a bit of help from Brett Rumford. He adjusted his right hand

:19:21. > :19:27.grip and he has won twice this year and he was putting beautifully both

:19:28. > :19:31.times. He can certainly be a factor, the man tied runner-up at the Open

:19:32. > :19:35.Championship. Australia has got high expectations. What about European

:19:36. > :19:43.hopes? We are still waiting, 17 year 's later after Jose Maria Olazabal.

:19:44. > :19:46.It is 20 years since Nick Faldo got his third green jacket in 1996 at

:19:47. > :19:57.the expense of an Aussie that year. That round was the best mental state

:19:58. > :20:09.I was ever in my career. I said, I want to win and stand and look out

:20:10. > :20:14.at Augusta and all you see is trees. COMMENTATOR That is the way

:20:15. > :20:19.champions do it. I genuinely felt for him. What can I say? I do not

:20:20. > :20:26.know what to say. We embraced and I wished him well. With the media. I

:20:27. > :20:31.want to win the Masters. I did not. Nick Faldo did. I screwed up. I know

:20:32. > :20:36.I screwed up today. It is not the end of the world for me. It really

:20:37. > :20:41.is not. There was emotion out there and emotion between Nick and myself

:20:42. > :20:46.on the 18th. I am disappointed. I am sad. I will regret it. It is going

:20:47. > :20:51.to be a day I know that I let one slip away. I would not like to see a

:20:52. > :20:57.player do what I did either, under the circumstances. Not everything is

:20:58. > :21:02.going to be perfect your whole life. Oh, you still feel his pain 20 years

:21:03. > :21:06.later. This year there are 15 golfers from the UK in the field

:21:07. > :21:09.with a couple of Scotsman, two Welshman, three from Northern

:21:10. > :21:12.Ireland and eight in Richmond. Will an English rose bloom this year?

:21:13. > :21:20.Iain Carter might have some answers. Just 21 but already playing his

:21:21. > :21:27.second Masters. Matthew Fitzpatrick is got a putting touch made for the

:21:28. > :21:31.Augusta greens. It has propelled him higher among the newer generation of

:21:32. > :21:36.English golfers. We play a lot of golf with each other and we know

:21:37. > :21:43.each other's game as well. It is good to have everybody out here. You

:21:44. > :21:45.know what you are up against. Like Fitzpatrick, Chris Wood is back for

:21:46. > :21:50.the second time. The man from Bristol has played a practice with

:21:51. > :21:55.Rory McIlroy and is a far more competent player than when he made

:21:56. > :21:58.his debut six years ago. It is a well-deserved debut for Andy

:21:59. > :22:01.Sullivan, the former supermarket shelf stacker. He is now a

:22:02. > :22:05.three-time winner on the European Tour. The man for the Midlands has

:22:06. > :22:08.an inner steel behind his genial demeanour and he can make an impact

:22:09. > :22:14.despite his lack of Augusta experience. The path as proved that

:22:15. > :22:18.rookies tend to not do well but I hope I can break the spell this year

:22:19. > :22:20.and get it done. I am trying to grab as much information as I can and

:22:21. > :22:25.hopefully naivete will get me through. Danny Willett is one of the

:22:26. > :22:29.most respected talents in the game. He contended in the open last year

:22:30. > :22:32.and he is ready to take the next step, major stage. In the first

:22:33. > :22:39.bloom of fatherhood after the arrival of baby Zachary last week,

:22:40. > :22:43.he could be an inspired figure here. When I get back next week it is back

:22:44. > :22:49.to daddy duties and awake every two or three hours and making sure he is

:22:50. > :22:53.feeding and changing nappies. It is nice to hopefully play four rounds

:22:54. > :22:56.and stay away. Paul Casey has been sharpening his short game after

:22:57. > :22:59.coming in at six last year and lining up for his 10th appearance at

:23:00. > :23:04.the Masters by starting with the defending champion, Jordan Spieth.

:23:05. > :23:08.England's most likely contender is Justin Rose. Last year, a 14-under

:23:09. > :23:14.finish would have been good enough to win many Masters. His renowned in

:23:15. > :23:19.a calm might just make sure that a rose can become an indelible part of

:23:20. > :23:24.Augusta's famed floor. You always learn a little bit every year. I am

:23:25. > :23:27.properly not going to learn tonnes between this year and last year. It

:23:28. > :23:33.comes down to execution and trying to bring your best game. Justin was

:23:34. > :23:37.34 under-par for all four Majors in total last year. Extraordinary he

:23:38. > :23:44.did not win one. Is it his time again? If not, which of the other UK

:23:45. > :23:48.players do you both rate best? I have always fancied the game Paul

:24:09. > :24:14.they did 50 years ago, I believe. But there is a lot for everything at

:25:17. > :25:19.Ricky Fowler has had top five finishes in all four Majors over the

:25:20. > :25:26.years. Many people think he is ready. No doubt about it. He has

:25:27. > :25:29.made some swing changes and it is much better. He had a look at the

:27:41. > :27:44.It is bring time. The sun is shining and we are at Augusta and look at

:27:45. > :27:49.it. A glorious scene. Blue skies, the azaleas are out. The pine trees
