:00:53. > :01:11.May be. Yes, Sir! There it is! Can you believe it? Yes, for Gary

:01:12. > :01:20.Player! Oh, what a shot! Simply incredible. A life changer! Yes! At

:01:21. > :01:32.long last! Oh, wow! One of the greatest putts I've ever

:01:33. > :02:04.seen. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen

:02:05. > :02:12.and welcome to the 80th playing of the Masters. It is always such a

:02:13. > :02:17.special start to any masters. Not driving this year, Mr Arnold Palmer.

:02:18. > :02:25.Arnold, the king at 86, unable to swing this year. Please welcome Mr

:02:26. > :02:32.Gary Player! But he is as fit and competitive as ever at 80 years

:02:33. > :02:38.young. Oh, wow. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Mr Jack

:02:39. > :02:43.Nicklaus! And at 76 years old, the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus on his

:02:44. > :02:47.30th anniversary of his sixth and final win at Augusta. Rarely have we

:02:48. > :02:55.seen so many patrons lining the first fairway to see golf's big

:02:56. > :03:00.three. Ladies and gentlemen, the 2016 Masters has now officially

:03:01. > :03:04.begun. Have fun! It is always such a thrill to see Palmer, Nicklaus and

:03:05. > :03:09.Player United at Augusta but now the stage belongs to younger men. This

:03:10. > :03:13.is the 80th playing of the Masters. Rarely have we seen so much

:03:14. > :03:18.anticipation and excitement ahead of the tournament. Much of the talk has

:03:19. > :03:22.centred on golf's so-called new big three, an Australian, an American

:03:23. > :03:30.and Northern Irishman. Between them, they have bagged five of the last

:03:31. > :03:37.six titles. -- major titles. It feels good to be able to walk around

:03:38. > :03:43.here is number one in the world. If I go out and I let my game just flow

:03:44. > :03:44.and play the way I know I can play, of course I can win on this golf

:03:45. > :03:58.course. I'm going to try to use last year as

:03:59. > :04:01.momentum. We know we are capable of playing this place. We have proven

:04:02. > :04:11.it to ourselves in the last two years. Just the jacket itself

:04:12. > :04:13.provide a real validation. But at the same time, you know, it is not

:04:14. > :04:37.easy, it is not easy to get. The world numbers one, two and three

:04:38. > :04:40.are part of an 89 strong field this year, the smallest for some 14

:04:41. > :04:46.years. Let's show you some of the big-name groups.

:04:47. > :04:51.This is the first round, a morning start for defending champion Jordan

:04:52. > :04:56.Spieth, in the company as is tradition of the reigning US amateur

:04:57. > :05:00.champion, Bryson DeChambeau and Europe's resurgent Paul Casey. It is

:05:01. > :05:04.Justin Rose's 10th attempt at Augusta, runner-up last year,

:05:05. > :05:07.alongside Welshman Jamie Donaldson and PGA Tour Rookie of the Year

:05:08. > :05:11.Daniel Berger. Augusta specialist Bubba Watson, with two wins in the

:05:12. > :05:15.last four years, as highly rated South African Branden Grace and Ian

:05:16. > :05:19.Poulter for company. World number one Jason Day of Australia comes

:05:20. > :05:23.here with back-to-back wins in America and an early afternoon start

:05:24. > :05:27.for him with Matt Kuchar and tee time runner-up Ernie Els. Grand slam

:05:28. > :05:32.seeking Rory McIlroy plays a waiting game in the very last three ball of

:05:33. > :05:38.the day. He plays with Bill Haas and two time major winner Martin Kaymer

:05:39. > :05:39.of Germany. Sunny conditions but blustery, gusty winds in various

:05:40. > :05:49.well. -- in there as well. Early headlines made by Tom Watson

:05:50. > :05:53.in his last appearance at the Masters. This is a long attempt for

:05:54. > :06:03.birdie and drained. Tom takes the lead! Jordan Spieth is hoping to

:06:04. > :06:06.join Tom Watson as a two time Augusta champion this year. All

:06:07. > :06:12.quiet in his round until this second to the third. The man who led from

:06:13. > :06:18.start to finish last year. That would set up a first birdie of the

:06:19. > :06:22.day for the defending champion. A very productive three ball that

:06:23. > :06:25.Spieth found himself in because his playing partner Paul Casey would

:06:26. > :06:31.join him at 1-under par on the very next hole, the short par-3 fourth.

:06:32. > :06:38.Paul has always enjoyed coming to Augusta. This is his 10th attempt at

:06:39. > :06:42.the club. Performing strongly on the US PGA Tour, full time now. That is

:06:43. > :06:47.a gimme birdie. Up ahead, Austria's big Bernd Wiesberger, loving his

:06:48. > :06:54.second visit to Georgia. This approach to the seventh would set up

:06:55. > :06:58.a second birdie of the day for him. The six Austrian, in the outright

:06:59. > :07:03.lead and he would putt that one, to make it to under the reigning French

:07:04. > :07:07.Open champion. As many of you will know, Englishman Lee Westwood

:07:08. > :07:12.certainly has a very strong record here in colluding runner up six

:07:13. > :07:17.years ago. -- here, including runner up. That one disappeared and he was

:07:18. > :07:25.into red numbers as well. 1-under par. And Zach Johnson, a man who

:07:26. > :07:29.triumphed here in 2007, and the man who last year won the Claret Jug to

:07:30. > :07:35.go with his green jacket. His tee shot at the 6th, he had a

:07:36. > :07:38.hole-in-one in the par-3 contest yesterday with his family and

:07:39. > :07:44.friends around him. Surely he could not get another, could he? It is

:07:45. > :07:50.tracking all right, but just a foot or so right of the pin. He would

:07:51. > :07:55.convert that to go to 1-under par. As we join it, there's an Austrian

:07:56. > :07:59.on top, as Europe seeks a first win this century in the Masters. It is

:08:00. > :08:03.to under par for Bernd Wiesberger and in the group at 1-under par, the

:08:04. > :08:07.likes of Lee Westwood, Zach Johnson and Rickie Fowler, highly fancied

:08:08. > :08:12.this year, defending champion Jordan Spieth and Paul Casey. So, deep

:08:13. > :08:15.greens and yellow flags, pink and white flowers, the scene is picture

:08:16. > :08:19.perfect as ever but more mesmerising as always is the drama and

:08:20. > :08:24.excitement this beautiful stage produces. Soaking it all in, Pauling

:08:25. > :08:27.Azinger, Andrew Cotter, Ken Brown and Peter Alliss.

:08:28. > :08:32.COMMENTATOR: Thank you, Hazel, and here we are at the burst, Justin

:08:33. > :08:36.Rose, one of England's favourites. A nice strike, head still, it is

:08:37. > :08:39.running nicely and oh, what a lovely way to start the day. Played one,

:08:40. > :08:53.1-under par. He has always played well here,

:08:54. > :09:03.Justin. I wonder if he will do it again? Title

:09:04. > :09:08.this is the two, the Jordan Spieth and right in the heart of the hole,

:09:09. > :09:16.off to a flyer, a couple under after six. Gorgeous. A bit of breeze

:09:17. > :09:23.about, not easy. Club selection is always tricky. Paul Casey at the

:09:24. > :09:27.7th, his second shot. This hole has been lengthened tremendously over

:09:28. > :09:31.the years. It is now very difficult to get your ball to stay on the

:09:32. > :09:35.green but Paul Casey does just that with the wind freshening. A narrow

:09:36. > :09:42.green, sloping from back to front, deep, deep bunkers all around. Jamie

:09:43. > :09:47.Donaldson at the 2nd. A birdie chance. It is slippery but he bangs

:09:48. > :09:50.it in the heart of the cup, made par at the 1st, birdie at the 2nd for

:09:51. > :10:02.Jamie Donaldson, the Ryder Cup hero. 1-under. Lovely. Casey at the 7th. A

:10:03. > :10:08.slider, left to right, for three. Right in the middle. Well done. He

:10:09. > :10:14.has always played well here, Paul Casey. Opened up with, well, you can

:10:15. > :10:22.see, seven played and two birdies, 2-under. A nice start.

:10:23. > :10:28.The first green, Matthew Fitzpatrick, 21 years old, a birdie

:10:29. > :10:35.chance. You don't get many birdies at the 1st. Does he like it? Oh, he

:10:36. > :10:38.does! Well done. The winner of the British Masters at the end of last

:10:39. > :10:46.year at Woburn. Perfect. The greens are true and pure, aren't they?

:10:47. > :10:49.Wonderful, amazing. Jordan Spieth with his third. He has laid up at

:10:50. > :10:58.the par-5 but playing up right the length of the green, here, though.

:10:59. > :11:02.He has zipped it, a little ledge, the pin at the back right of the

:11:03. > :11:10.great and it skips forward. Delightful, delightful shot. He

:11:11. > :11:18.really is a marvellous wedge player. Justin Rose with the old claw grip.

:11:19. > :11:24.Can you see his right hand? They follow like lemmings. Look at the

:11:25. > :11:29.borrower on this. Brown she comes, Rowntree... Oh! That was on the

:11:30. > :11:36.third, a birdie putt. -- she comes. An ugly six at the 2nd but redeemed

:11:37. > :11:39.by a couple of threes. 1-under. Up to the eighth and after a very good

:11:40. > :11:48.pitch from the defending champion, this is for birdie.

:11:49. > :11:54.He gets it and goes to 3-under. Scoring very good. The wind is

:11:55. > :11:59.freshening and the forecast is to be very windy this afternoon. That

:12:00. > :12:04.could change things considerably. That is how things stand, early on

:12:05. > :12:08.on this Thursday, Jordan Spieth recovering some of the form, that

:12:09. > :12:13.mystical form he had 12 months or so ago. You can see some familiar

:12:14. > :12:18.names, the European contingent going along very nicely indeed. A good

:12:19. > :12:22.mixture. But it is very, very early in the piece. There's a lot of three

:12:23. > :12:30.putting to happen before Sunday night.

:12:31. > :12:33.Just a brief glimpse, there come of Matthew Fitzpatrick, his second to

:12:34. > :12:41.the second, down the hill, the par-5. The breeze is into and that

:12:42. > :12:46.is a magical shot, feathering it through the narrow gap. It gathers

:12:47. > :12:52.up and he will have that... Go on, go on! It is a nasty, slick one down

:12:53. > :12:56.the hill but it will be for eagle. To the ninth, Spieth, the defending

:12:57. > :13:06.champion. Pops it in. That was for par. A very nice outward nine of 33.

:13:07. > :13:13.Not a blemish on the card. He has got that familiar look back. It is

:13:14. > :13:22.time for the old cashmere insert down here. This is slick. A short

:13:23. > :13:26.one for a three which he missed but we will go up the Donaldson who is

:13:27. > :13:32.going along very nicely. At the 5th, 1-under par. I tell a lie, he is

:13:33. > :13:40.going along even better than that, now 2-under par. Jamie Donaldson,

:13:41. > :13:44.the pride of Wales. Spieth at the 10th, on the downhill, as you can

:13:45. > :13:50.see, took a 3-wood, I fancy, from the team. Wind assisted. -- from the

:13:51. > :13:54.tee. This is a very good-looking green, when you look down from the

:13:55. > :13:59.high ground, it looks very inviting. That is online and a good one if it

:14:00. > :14:05.stays. Yes, good shot. Very nicely done. Our first look at Lee

:14:06. > :14:09.Westwood, whose record here is pretty good. But this is for par at

:14:10. > :14:19.the short 12th. Oh, it dribbles by the edge. So many shots are just

:14:20. > :14:25.frittered away at the par-3s. Outside chance of a birdie four Paul

:14:26. > :14:34.Casey. -- a birdie, four Paul Casey. Left-to-right. 3-under par. Out in

:14:35. > :14:42.34. A scarce birdie at the 10th, the 10th and 11th are very hard par

:14:43. > :14:46.fors. Fitzpatrick. On the fourth, 1-under, look where he is aiming

:14:47. > :14:52.this one. Dealing it down the left-hand side. Will it? It will.

:14:53. > :15:01.Very nicely done indeed. He stays at 1-under par. Going along very

:15:02. > :15:04.sweetly for a newcomer. Under the cup, putting uphill, Spieth, the

:15:05. > :15:09.easiest six footer on the 10th and in it goes, 4-under par, the

:15:10. > :15:13.outright leader. He has played the Masters twice before, second and

:15:14. > :15:18.first last year, the defending champion off to a real flyer.

:15:19. > :15:21.Superb. Yes, his record is quite extraordinary here, for such a

:15:22. > :15:29.useful player. A check on the leaderboard. -- youthful player.

:15:30. > :15:32.Spieth has completed ten, alongside Paul Casey. And some familiar names,

:15:33. > :15:42.the cream of the game at this moment, towards the top of the

:15:43. > :15:47.leaderboard. Looking good. Spieth on the 11th, in a bit of trouble, here.

:15:48. > :15:52.Trying to keep his feet stable on the pine needles, or the pine straw,

:15:53. > :15:59.as they call it, here. It sounded like a good contact. Found the

:16:00. > :16:05.little gap. "Yes", they cried. That is a bit cruel. That was a horrible

:16:06. > :16:10.first jump. Stay there, stay there. Do you know what? It has. That is a

:16:11. > :16:21.huge bit of fortune after some poor fortune initially because that was a

:16:22. > :16:27.great escape. He got away with it. Paul Casey with his second shot at

:16:28. > :16:37.the 11th. 227 yards. They have a Liebrich the tea bag at the 11th

:16:38. > :16:41.over the years. -- the tee back. The players want to ten to bail out to

:16:42. > :16:45.the right for safety, anything to avoid the left. That is a bailout

:16:46. > :16:55.for Paul Casey into the back bunker. That will be a dicey second shot.

:16:56. > :16:59.Probably affected a lot by the wind. Its world a lot on the 11th. Lee

:17:00. > :17:05.Westwood with a birdie attempt to get back into red figures. Sheltered

:17:06. > :17:11.from the winds down there by the giant trees. This one creaks in the

:17:12. > :17:17.right half. That shot that went on the 12th is gathered up on the

:17:18. > :17:21.following hole. -- creeps in. Paul Casey played a decent bunker shot

:17:22. > :17:30.and this putt will be so fast, putting downhill towards the water.

:17:31. > :17:38.So many putts at Augusta, you maybe have given it slightly to the side

:17:39. > :17:43.of the centre. -- have two hit it slightly. Aggressive stroke but no.

:17:44. > :17:52.A dropped shot for Paul Casey, he goes back to 2-under par. Europe's

:17:53. > :17:56.Ryder Cup captain, the last year of his five-year exemption for winning

:17:57. > :17:59.the 2011 Open, so his last chance at the Masters unless of course he

:18:00. > :18:03.continues to do that and finishes well enough. Other things on his

:18:04. > :18:09.mind this year. It is a very hard job and takes up a lot of your time

:18:10. > :18:13.but Darren Clarke is under par. And now Jordan Spieth for par at the

:18:14. > :18:20.11th after a bad break. It might have been a good break, to stay up.

:18:21. > :18:28.This is for a two putt from the collar. Oh, yeah, he is always so

:18:29. > :18:35.steady on those. Up to the 12th. A good part, there, for Jordan. Brandt

:18:36. > :18:39.Snedeker has made a bright start. A decent record at the Masters as

:18:40. > :18:45.well. He was the halfway lead two or three years ago. This is well

:18:46. > :18:50.judged. Very well judged indeed. It was going at some pace as well

:18:51. > :18:54.towards the end but it sneaks in and Snedeker with two birdies in the

:18:55. > :18:58.first four holes, linking up with Ben Crenshaw as an adviser, all his

:18:59. > :19:04.knowledge of the Masters. Jordan Bunce Mac tee shot at the 12th, only

:19:05. > :19:13.156 yards but a very narrow green, the fourth most difficult hole at

:19:14. > :19:21.this point. That is OK, actually. Better than being in the bunker,

:19:22. > :19:24.that is for sure. Bubba Watson, and I'm noticing that Hideki Matsuyama

:19:25. > :19:29.has birdied the ninth to go to 2-under par, the man who finished so

:19:30. > :19:32.strongly last year. Watson, well, he joins in with the birdies and many

:19:33. > :19:42.think he may be ready to win again, here. He does like the even years.

:19:43. > :19:47.Jordan came up a bit short on his effort from just over the green at

:19:48. > :19:52.12. This is for par. It looks so square, look how nice, his

:19:53. > :19:53.shoulders, hips and feet all matched up. Well judged. He loves getting

:19:54. > :20:11.Latin! -- getting that in. Daniel Berger, his first Masters,

:20:12. > :20:17.the man who lost in a play-off to Padraig Harrington at the Honda last

:20:18. > :20:24.year. This is rolling well. Beautifully done by Berger. Three

:20:25. > :20:36.birdies in the first eight holes in his first Masters. Back to the 12th

:20:37. > :20:46.and Paul Casey for bogey. He just cleans that up. Ernie Els for par on

:20:47. > :20:52.the first. He found the fairway with his drive, unsuccessful with the

:20:53. > :20:57.birdie but the sunlight comes and goes... Oh, goodness, did you see

:20:58. > :21:06.the putter as well, it just went off in his hand. He flinched on that

:21:07. > :21:11.one. My goodness, that was careless. He has got to move on. What is going

:21:12. > :21:20.on? He looks at his caddy. Jason Day turns away. How many is that now?

:21:21. > :21:25.One, two, three, four... Four putts already. I think that is right. This

:21:26. > :21:28.will be his fifth putt. He missed the green and pitched up to there

:21:29. > :21:35.and had that putt 4-part right here earlier. -- putt the level macro. My

:21:36. > :21:40.goodness. That is sad, that is all you can say about that. Very, very

:21:41. > :21:51.sad. Golfers will understand. People might mock him but that is horrible.

:21:52. > :21:55.That is a ten. Lee Westwood at 16, playing 168 yards today. Actually a

:21:56. > :22:01.pretty easy hole location. In the left portion of the green. Yes, well

:22:02. > :22:14.done. Anything to the right of the flag should be towards the hole

:22:15. > :22:18.today. -- should feed towards. Paul Casey, a good angle to look at the

:22:19. > :22:26.hanging lie he has got, slight downslope at the par-5. You need a

:22:27. > :22:30.steely nerve. The creek is in front to the right of the green. A twirl

:22:31. > :22:37.of the club is all with a good sign. Is it heading left? Not at all! What

:22:38. > :22:42.a shot from Paul Casey! Eagle putt to come. You are right, the twhirl

:22:43. > :22:47.is a dead giveaway. This is a shot that Masters champions seem to make

:22:48. > :22:52.a easy. But I can tell you first hand it is not an easy shot. A

:22:53. > :23:03.hanging lie, Jordan Spieth with his second at the 13th. Another terrific

:23:04. > :23:09.effort the Jordan Spieth. What is it with him, Paul? He comes alive when

:23:10. > :23:12.he comes here. It is like that with some players, major Championship can

:23:13. > :23:17.get some players to some point where it is a fault but if you can't

:23:18. > :23:26.control your emotion... Lee Westwood for his two on the 16th. Nicely

:23:27. > :23:31.judged. Justin Rose has birdied the ninth so the British challenge is

:23:32. > :23:35.looking pretty robust at the moment. That must have been Jordan Spieth's

:23:36. > :23:50.third shot at 13. This is for birdie. Yes, nicely done.

:23:51. > :24:02.It was two putts in the end. He looks so solid over the short putts.

:24:03. > :24:06.Jason Day, the world number one. His second... I wonder if he might be

:24:07. > :24:09.affected by playing with Ernie Els? He is friends with Ernie and that

:24:10. > :24:16.would be horrible for any golfer to watch. I totally agree. You have got

:24:17. > :24:20.to just stay focused on what you are doing and let the guys around you go

:24:21. > :24:22.away. What a shot from Jason Day, down the hill at the 2nd. An

:24:23. > :24:36.opportunity for eagle, here. Leaving himself a nice uphill putt

:24:37. > :24:40.as well. To another par-5, deeper in the course and Paul Casey for

:24:41. > :24:44.birdie. His group is going well, Casey and Spieth and Bryson

:24:45. > :24:50.DeChambeau, the third member, not playing too badly either. A mixed

:24:51. > :24:56.bag on the back nine for Casey. Jason Day it a monster tee second

:24:57. > :25:00.shock to hear, this is for eagle, not a lot of breaking this putt and

:25:01. > :25:10.he has drained it. A good start for Jason Day. Eagle at the 2nd. That

:25:11. > :25:14.will bring home some crystal. So this is the way it stands at the

:25:15. > :25:17.moment and Jordan Spieth, what a record at the Masters, second on his

:25:18. > :25:20.first appearance a couple of years ago and then he won and he's on top

:25:21. > :25:24.of the board again, two shots clear of Daniel Berger in his first

:25:25. > :25:28.Masters, Westwood, Paul Casey and Rose alongside the world number one,

:25:29. > :25:34.Jason Day and Bryson DeChambeau, the amateur champion also on the first

:25:35. > :25:43.paid. Those on the second page mostly in the early part of their

:25:44. > :25:46.rounds. Justin Rose down the hill at the 10th. Not a great chance, you

:25:47. > :25:52.just want to judge the speed right. Look at how high he had to play

:25:53. > :25:59.this. Oh, wow. You have got to be kidding me, Justin Rose! Get a claw

:26:00. > :26:09.grip right now. I'm switching! Well done.

:26:10. > :26:17.Here we are, the campaign begins for Rory McIlroy. The big, blue driver

:26:18. > :26:23.and away we go. The wind is beginning to below around the

:26:24. > :26:28.course. The applause dies away. -- to below. Right-hand bunker, is he

:26:29. > :26:32.heading that way? Well, use not. He's got a bit more room than we

:26:33. > :26:43.think, there. He might be OK standing above ground, just. Ian

:26:44. > :26:49.Poulter, downhill at the 6th, hole cut in the front left portion of the

:26:50. > :26:52.green. It may be the easiest hole location on the entire putting

:26:53. > :27:02.surface and he has hit a beauty, a virtual gimme, there. That could get

:27:03. > :27:06.him to 1-under par. Paul Casey has found the sand with his second on

:27:07. > :27:10.the par-5 15th, all the way down the green he comes, looks to have judged

:27:11. > :27:16.this pretty well, just catches the slope and keeps on going. It keeps

:27:17. > :27:22.on going. Beautifully played by Casey. All of that for his birdie

:27:23. > :27:28.four. A bailout shot to the bunker on the right. Poulter on 1-under

:27:29. > :27:34.par, actually, and this is to get to 2-under. Pretty routine right here,

:27:35. > :27:43.I would think. Yet. Well done. Good start for Ian Poulter. Still looking

:27:44. > :27:50.for his first major. Scott Piercy, it looks like. Yes, it is. A chance

:27:51. > :27:58.to go to 3-under par. This tells you what it has -- what a start it has

:27:59. > :28:02.been, we are at the 4th. No rapture is raw from the patrons but Scott

:28:03. > :28:06.Piercy is moving along well. -- rapturous sound from the patrons.

:28:07. > :28:13.Paul Casey played a beautiful kind of fat run down the hill to 15 and

:28:14. > :28:17.this is for birdie. -- fat run. He barely breathed on the ball and it

:28:18. > :28:25.reached the hole. Paul Casey moves to 3-under par. John McLaren on his

:28:26. > :28:34.bag this week, Paul Casey. Jason Day has got a bit of borrow in this one.

:28:35. > :28:40.Just tickles it left to right. Nice, I mean, right in the middle for

:28:41. > :28:43.Jason Day. I wonder if he might be upset by that seven putt from Ernie

:28:44. > :28:49.Els from his playing partner at the 1st but Jason Day is absolutely

:28:50. > :29:00.focused, and eagle and a birdie. Paul Casey's tee-shot is on at 16.

:29:01. > :29:04.Oh, he has almost flown it in! We call that the all finish at home.

:29:05. > :29:11.You can just about give him that. He will go to 4-under par.

:29:12. > :29:23.Brandt Snedeker, on this par-5 8th hole. Outstanding motion. Doesn't

:29:24. > :29:30.take any time at all over the putts, and in it goes. Dropped a shot at

:29:31. > :29:34.the par-3 sixth, but three are these as well. I've already given Paul

:29:35. > :29:39.Casey this, but I tell you, there's a lot of chicken on that bone, this

:29:40. > :29:47.is far from a gimme to get to 4-under. Down the hill. He just

:29:48. > :29:54.touched it. Catches the left side and drops, well done. So these are

:29:55. > :29:58.the movers and shakers on the first day, and Jordan Speith out in front

:29:59. > :30:03.as he so often has been at the Masters. Paul Casey going along very

:30:04. > :30:08.nicely, alongside Jordan Spieth. What a shot from the Irishman.

:30:09. > :30:31.Should go to 2-under par. Let's have a look at Justin Rose

:30:32. > :30:44.here at the 13th, this for birdie. Chance to get to 3-under par. Oh

:30:45. > :30:48.yes. Nicely holed. Many felt Justin should be the pretournament

:30:49. > :30:52.favourite here. He's proving them right.

:30:53. > :30:59.In 2004, he led and then this man took over the British challenge,

:31:00. > :31:09.Casey. The crowd was excited about that. Casey slips back, shame. Rory

:31:10. > :31:13.McIlroy, left him two beauties coming up just short, looks like he

:31:14. > :31:22.will hit a delicate chip shot up the hill. A swirly little bounce but

:31:23. > :31:28.should be just short enough to tab that in four McIlroy. The Watson

:31:29. > :31:36.with a fetching light blue glove today. 2-under par at the moment.

:31:37. > :31:40.And what a third shot at the par-5. Something must have gone wrong with

:31:41. > :31:44.his tee shot or his second, that he's in fine position now. Second

:31:45. > :31:51.shot up the hill. From here you cannot see the bottom of the' flag.

:31:52. > :31:59.It's difficult to judge. Maybe a half a club or so extra. You can

:32:00. > :32:05.tell he wants to cut it in. Is it the right distance? Boy, is it ever!

:32:06. > :32:12.Sauber shot. 18 is playing the second most difficult hole on the

:32:13. > :32:20.course today. Shane Lowry has started very well. Wonderful short

:32:21. > :32:28.game that should suit him round here, and gets the parts are working

:32:29. > :32:33.as well. There's a bit of support. Jordan Spieth, not a whole lot of

:32:34. > :32:41.break in this putt. Might go to the back of the green. Gone the other

:32:42. > :32:48.way, but he's made it! He made it look easy! What a round of golf.

:32:49. > :32:53.Bogey free. Six birdies the Jordan Spieth, 6-under par. The early

:32:54. > :33:03.clubhouse leader. That is quite a statement from the defending

:33:04. > :33:09.champion. Can McIlroy get his challenge going and keep it here?

:33:10. > :33:15.1-under par at the moment here. That never really had a chance. He fired

:33:16. > :33:24.it right of the hole. Paul Casey. Down the hill. He's had a lot of

:33:25. > :33:30.these tricky ones down the hill. Oh yes, no problem. Good start for Paul

:33:31. > :33:35.Casey. 3-under par 69, just three back. He gets to watch Jordan Spieth

:33:36. > :33:42.again all day tomorrow. Nice to be able to stay in touch with the

:33:43. > :33:48.leaders. Well, what a leaderboard already. Jordan Spieth, the

:33:49. > :33:52.champion, opening with a 66. He went 64, 66 in his opening two rounds

:33:53. > :33:56.last year. Let's hear from the man on top of the leaderboard. Jordan,

:33:57. > :34:01.you've finished second in this tournament two years ago and you won

:34:02. > :34:06.it last year. How do you rate that round of 66? As good as any. The

:34:07. > :34:10.first two rounds last year, the second round last year trying to

:34:11. > :34:14.back up the 64 was a really solid 6-under round. The first round of

:34:15. > :34:19.the is the was really special and I guess somewhat historic. But to come

:34:20. > :34:24.here today in these conditions, I was accepting 2- under, I would have

:34:25. > :34:30.signed for it right away and I wouldn't have played today! Grabbing

:34:31. > :34:34.four extra strokes out there with no bogeys, just awesome. It's great to

:34:35. > :34:38.be in this position again. It's the first round, a long way to go. Is it

:34:39. > :34:44.simply a case of a return to Augusta, a return to the form of

:34:45. > :34:48.2015? No, I feel this has been coming in recent weeks. At Houston I

:34:49. > :34:53.was starting to get it together, I just hit a couple of bad balls and

:34:54. > :34:57.hit balls into the water. Here I gave more respect to the golf course

:34:58. > :35:02.than I did last week but I felt my game was there. You mentioned last

:35:03. > :35:05.year you enjoyed the stress and confidence of competing in this

:35:06. > :35:11.tournament, do you feel those same feelings again today? Yes I do. It's

:35:12. > :35:16.tough because it's so soon after the round that I was obviously very

:35:17. > :35:21.pumped up on a lot of those putts, even the par saves. Saw some fist

:35:22. > :35:26.pumps today, I haven't given fist pumps since maybe Hawaii. There is

:35:27. > :35:31.certainly emotion out there. I know where I am and I enjoy where I am

:35:32. > :35:35.and how I'm playing. That one on 18, I was very happy there. It will be

:35:36. > :35:39.interesting to see the difference, if there is a difference, in

:35:40. > :35:44.sleeping on a lead. We enjoyed watching you, well done today.

:35:45. > :35:54.Jason Day, third shot at the long uphill par-5 8th hole. Clipped it

:35:55. > :36:00.up, will it stop? Oh! How do they do that? Very well done to my coming in

:36:01. > :36:07.from the wrong side. Very good shot. Shane Lowry. A few birdies at the

:36:08. > :36:11.5th with this back pain and shame makes another one. How is that for

:36:12. > :36:22.an opening gambit? -- bag pin. Four birdies in a row, Kenneth.

:36:23. > :36:27.Smarter than the average bear! Jason Day for a birdie, he has played

:36:28. > :36:34.beautifully since he had to watch dear old Ernie Els take seven putts.

:36:35. > :36:40.But it hasn't affected him, that is the way you do it, line them up and

:36:41. > :36:51.knock them in. The 15th green and Justin Rose as holed it nicely. He

:36:52. > :36:59.moves to four under. Looking very confident with his new grip.

:37:00. > :37:11.Jason Day now, after a beautiful drive at the 9th. Uphill. This is a

:37:12. > :37:16.dangerous hole. How often have we seen beautiful shots pitch up at the

:37:17. > :37:21.flag, spin and come 30, 40 yards down that hill. It happened to Greg

:37:22. > :37:26.Norman, didn't it? Played a beautiful shot in fact but ended up

:37:27. > :37:32.nowhere near. Let's see what Day can do. Clipped that nicely, it's right

:37:33. > :37:36.on target. Oh! You see, the spin was just about right. They can say what

:37:37. > :37:41.they like, he had no idea he was going to get that sort of control

:37:42. > :37:45.over it, an act of God. The golfing gods decreed you've been a good lad,

:37:46. > :37:55.I will let it stop close. And it did! Scott Piercy. Little

:37:56. > :38:02.right-to-left. Just tumbled into the cup. They are making a mockery of

:38:03. > :38:09.the game, Kenneth! This is a scoring course, I have to say, but this is

:38:10. > :38:15.exceptional. Breezy and some pretty tough pins on a number of the

:38:16. > :38:17.greens. Now then, Justin Rose for a par. Just going to miss on the

:38:18. > :38:22.right. That's a shot dropped. He moves away. Paul Casey has played

:38:23. > :38:35.a good round. Let's hear from him. Paul, how much did you enjoy that

:38:36. > :38:41.round of 69 today in the company of Jordan? It was fantastic, a joy to

:38:42. > :38:44.be playing with a defending champion. I'm not sure I've been

:38:45. > :38:49.privileged to have been paired in that group before. To get up close

:38:50. > :38:53.and personal and see how he really took the golf course apart today was

:38:54. > :38:56.really impressive. Good group, we had wonderful momentum right from

:38:57. > :39:00.the beginning. I'm looking forward to more tomorrow. You said of all

:39:01. > :39:05.the Majors you play you are most comfortable and confident here at

:39:06. > :39:10.Augusta. Why is that? Two reasons. I think my game suits this golf course

:39:11. > :39:14.very nicely. Second, we get to come back every single year so you know

:39:15. > :39:18.it so well. My first trip here was 2004 and I got to play with Floyd

:39:19. > :39:26.and Langer and Crenshaw and guys like that and I learned the course

:39:27. > :39:32.quickly and some secrets. The other tournaments I'm comfortable at but

:39:33. > :39:35.with the course is different every year... At Augusta I know it suits

:39:36. > :39:40.me. COMMENTATOR: Rory McIlroy, second

:39:41. > :39:48.shot, level par. That's a beauty. Will it just trundle back a bit? No.

:39:49. > :39:57.That's a fine shot, playing in the worst of the conditions. He has

:39:58. > :40:02.holed a lot of beauties today. It hopped in the economic lacking in

:40:03. > :40:09.pace. Seemed a little something on the green. The tense catches a few

:40:10. > :40:15.players out and it has caught him out. 10th, 11th, 12th, very

:40:16. > :40:23.difficult today. A couple of shots behind Jordan Spieth. McIlroy, 7th

:40:24. > :40:28.hole. Just needs a little tickle down the left. Will it? Yes. I

:40:29. > :40:33.thought it was just going to squeeze by on the outside, but he birdies

:40:34. > :40:39.that. One dropped shot, at the par-3 four. Looking tidy.

:40:40. > :40:49.Now, Bubba Watson. Can he finish it off at the 11th? This is to stay at

:40:50. > :40:54.2-under. Oh! That was a Tripoli one, that was a nervy prod.

:40:55. > :41:09.-- that was a dribbly one. Running well, nicely done. Always extremely

:41:10. > :41:18.satisfying to make a two at the 12th. Par-5 to come. Justin Rose.

:41:19. > :41:26.Coming up the last hole, 3-under now. Has he hit it on to the top

:41:27. > :41:33.level? Come along... Yes he has. That's a good result. Lovely shot.

:41:34. > :41:37.Chance for a three. Let's see if we can see a bit of Shane Lowry magic

:41:38. > :41:44.with one of his wages. Lovely crisp sound. That was delightfully played.

:41:45. > :41:48.The green running away from him and he had to land it on a sixpence and

:41:49. > :41:53.he did it beautifully. Cracking shot, he will have that for a

:41:54. > :41:58.birdie. To the 18th, Justin Rose after that splendid second. This is

:41:59. > :42:08.for a birdie three, and he pushed it a little bit. We've seen so much

:42:09. > :42:14.golf from Augusta, you would think they would know the run of the

:42:15. > :42:21.greens. But it seems to change sometimes. It's an extraordinary

:42:22. > :42:24.fact but it is true. Now, Shane Lowry at the 8th, after that

:42:25. > :42:31.delightful pitch, which was very tricky. This for a birdie. He had

:42:32. > :42:35.four birdies in the first five holes and now he's got another birdie. He

:42:36. > :42:39.is playing quite beautifully. 5-under par.

:42:40. > :42:45.STUDIO Justin Rose was right there at the

:42:46. > :42:51.end of last year's masters, that tied second place, and he has set

:42:52. > :42:56.off with great purpose again, the 35-year-old Englishman. Let's get

:42:57. > :42:59.Justin's thoughts on what has been a very taxing day.

:43:00. > :43:04.That is the fifth time you've opened up a round in the 60s here at

:43:05. > :43:09.Augusta, how pleased argue with what you did today? I'm very pleased with

:43:10. > :43:12.that first round. Some first rounds are easier than others, conditions

:43:13. > :43:18.wise. That is probably one of the trickier ones I've played. The pro

:43:19. > :43:21.here, JJ, was joking with me that I always start here with a round in

:43:22. > :43:26.the 60s, so I'm trying to live up to that reputation!

:43:27. > :43:32.Danny Willett, birdie putt at the 9th. Pretty brave to get it left of

:43:33. > :43:34.that hole location and beautifully stroked. That is quite a birdie

:43:35. > :43:46.there, for Danny Willett. Matthew Fitzpatrick 16th hole,

:43:47. > :43:52.1-under par. Par finish from here would be a very good opening round

:43:53. > :43:57.for the young fellow. That could be... Oh! It stuck. It's thinking

:43:58. > :44:11.about it... No. Good shot, though. Rory McIlroy's second, after a

:44:12. > :44:21.massive tee shot. Oh yeah. Couldn't have been much more than a sand

:44:22. > :44:36.wedge for Rory. Fitzpatrick for his two, at the 16th. It dobbled in,

:44:37. > :44:39.well done. Poulter, terrific tee shot. Hit his second to hear. He's

:44:40. > :44:44.got to get this up the hill. An extremely slow putt through the

:44:45. > :44:48.shadows, but he's got this for eagle. He's given it a wrap. Will it

:44:49. > :45:03.be enough? Good effort. After a terrific second shot for

:45:04. > :45:13.Rory. Great birdie down the hill. Now Rory McIlroy 2-under par, making

:45:14. > :45:14.a little noise here on day one. Now Ian Poulter for birdie, just to

:45:15. > :45:20.clean this up a little bit. Yes. Well done. Red figures now, for

:45:21. > :45:33.Ian. Just watch his feet, folks. See if

:45:34. > :45:41.he stays tied to the ground or if he slips a little bit. Boy, this is

:45:42. > :45:49.pretty risky. And he's pulled it off! Well, he's got the heart of a

:45:50. > :45:55.champion, no doubt about it. That is a brave effort from the pine straw.

:45:56. > :46:05.Ian Poulter at the 14th. Playing very quickly. And that's a beauty.

:46:06. > :46:13.That is a magnificent second shot on this treacherous green. The

:46:14. > :46:18.colourful Billy Horschel. At 18. The hole cut on the back right, you've

:46:19. > :46:23.got to get it on top, and he's done it. Look at it run. Good shot.

:46:24. > :46:37.Poulter. Solidly done. Poulter in a tie for

:46:38. > :46:46.seventh at a couple under par. Jason Day eagled the second. At the 13th,

:46:47. > :46:53.chance for a second big Bird of the day. He hit it! That was a very good

:46:54. > :46:57.effort. It will be a kick in effort for birdie for Jason Day. What a

:46:58. > :47:02.four, from the pine needles down on the right-hand side. Jason Day will

:47:03. > :47:13.move back up to within one shot of Jordan Spieth. Matt Fitzpatrick, to

:47:14. > :47:18.finish out here. Nicely done. Very, very good round from Matt

:47:19. > :47:24.Fitzpatrick. He made his debut last year and missed the cut but opens

:47:25. > :47:33.with a 1-under par 71 in his second year here at Augusta. Danny Lee,

:47:34. > :47:42.7-iron. Front left pin position today. Fairly friendly. Wonderful

:47:43. > :47:49.shot. From the New Zealander, South Korean born but raised in New

:47:50. > :47:56.Zealand. Chance to go to 4-under. Let's see just how brave he can be,

:47:57. > :48:01.5-under par. Well, there's an old Irish shot. Getting down under the

:48:02. > :48:06.wind, trying to hold it up with that wind. What a shot from Shane Lowry.

:48:07. > :48:12.That's a masterclass in dealing with the wind. You don't often see that

:48:13. > :48:18.at Augusta. That is how it was intended to be played. Danny Lee

:48:19. > :48:24.with another beautiful shot here at 17, we've seen a lot of them but not

:48:25. > :48:26.many holed. That is dead centre for Danny Lee. 4-under par now. On day

:48:27. > :48:39.one of the Masters. McIlroy then for his par on the

:48:40. > :48:45.11th. No, so McIlroy starts Amen Corner with a drop shot. Now finally

:48:46. > :48:53.Lowry, after rolling and getting relief from the sprinkler, he has

:48:54. > :48:57.this for par. Slow down. This green is flat and very, very fast. Ian

:48:58. > :49:07.Poulter at the 16th. A far friendlier par-3 than the

:49:08. > :49:12.12th. You are making decisions on every shot out here, you know,

:49:13. > :49:16.Andrew. Here you've got to decide, am I going to be brave enough to go

:49:17. > :49:26.at it? Am I going to sling it out to the right? That is a nice result.

:49:27. > :49:27.Now Jason Day, still just a shot behind Jordan Spieth but this to

:49:28. > :49:40.remain there. Well, he's made a bit of a mess of

:49:41. > :49:48.that hole. He hasn't done anything tightly there at all. Loose drive,

:49:49. > :49:56.had to lay up. Poor pitch and a poor second. A six at the 15th, back to

:49:57. > :50:03.four. Now, Poulter. Chance to get to 3-under. Looks good, looks very

:50:04. > :50:13.good. Poulter moves to 3-under. Now in a tie with Casey and Rose, who

:50:14. > :50:15.have finished their rounds. To the 16th tee, Jason Day, after that

:50:16. > :50:28.slight mishap. What on earth is happening? Suddenly

:50:29. > :50:34.the magic is disappearing. That could be in the water. There it is.

:50:35. > :50:39.The tell-tale ripples. All of a sudden, we were going along chatting

:50:40. > :50:50.away to the caddy and having a lovely time, and now... Yuck. Rory

:50:51. > :51:02.McIlroy, 13th, second shot. The drive, big drive. What a gem.

:51:03. > :51:12.Absolute gem. Found his tee shot into the water, then he had to drop.

:51:13. > :51:21.A rather ugly six. He drops back to 1-under. Rory, there will be a raw

:51:22. > :51:24.if this goes in, for an eagle. He's done it! An eagle three Faure

:51:25. > :51:38.McIlroy. -- a roar. Rory McIlroy vaulting up the

:51:39. > :51:43.leaderboard here at Augusta National. How exciting this is

:51:44. > :51:48.proving to be in the opening round, with Jordan Spieth there and Jason

:51:49. > :51:51.Day. He's had his problems the last couple of holes, Jason Day. Rory

:51:52. > :51:58.McIlroy making a decisive move, now within three.

:51:59. > :52:00.COMMENTATOR: Sergio now on a bit of a hot streak, birdies in the last

:52:01. > :52:13.three holes each. And another great chance for Sergio.

:52:14. > :52:22.That is a tricky putt. That putt is so fast.

:52:23. > :52:30.Ian Poulter, after that very nice delicate chip from behind the green,

:52:31. > :52:37.this for a par-4. Firmly done, well done. Good round. 69, well played.

:52:38. > :52:51.They've had enough and so has he. Danny Willett, at the 16th. Playing

:52:52. > :52:59.with Garcia, who has played a beauty, and he followed him in. Two

:53:00. > :53:06.cracking shots. Up to the 18th. Jason Day tabbing in for a round of

:53:07. > :53:18.72. 31 out there and then all those messy mistakes on the inward nine,

:53:19. > :53:23.441. 31, 40 one. How things can change, can't they? Over to Sergio

:53:24. > :53:31.with this treacherous putt down the hill. Just got to breathe on it.

:53:32. > :53:44.Some touch there. Four birdies in a Rover -- in a row, for Sergio.

:53:45. > :53:56.Struck it nicely. He has kept things going very nicely today. That is a

:53:57. > :54:06.fine two. Rory McIlroy for birdie, here at the 15th. For a two putt

:54:07. > :54:17.birdie. Beautifully holed, Rory. He is making some noise now! Lowry,

:54:18. > :54:26.with this very delicate 8-foot putt for a birdie. Oh! It slides by

:54:27. > :54:31.envelope side. But never mind, it's a four. Many have taken five today.

:54:32. > :54:36.Disappointing when you play such a cracking second, but four under.

:54:37. > :54:43.Here is Danny Willett, going to drop his first shot of the day if he

:54:44. > :54:48.knocks this in. Couldn't quite get up and down from the back of the

:54:49. > :54:56.green. It's been very tidy so far. In she goes. The first birdie comes

:54:57. > :55:00.at the final hole, but still very impressive for Danny Willett. Just

:55:01. > :55:10.that blemish at the last. Still a good round, round in 70. McIlroy,

:55:11. > :55:16.then, for his par at the 16th. No, that's a waste.

:55:17. > :55:25.What a fine effort this has been from Shane Lowry. Can he finish with

:55:26. > :55:30.a birdie? Oh! He thought he had it, I think they all thought they had

:55:31. > :55:36.it. Very good, though. Very impressive. No birdie at the final

:55:37. > :55:41.hole, but only his second Masters, remember. He missed the cut last

:55:42. > :55:46.year. That is an opening 68 foot Shane Lowry. As close as anyone to

:55:47. > :55:50.Jordan Spieth, alongside Danny Lee in a tie for second place. I didn't

:55:51. > :55:54.really get as many shots even though I drove the ball ready well and gave

:55:55. > :55:59.myself a few chances. When I got myself out of position on the greens

:56:00. > :56:03.I had a nice couple of two putts. All in all it was a great start to

:56:04. > :56:09.the weekend and I'm looking forward to the next three days. Rory

:56:10. > :56:13.McIlroy's second at the 18th found sand and a plugged lie, so he

:56:14. > :56:17.splashed it out, 25 feet past, and from there he would make bogey.

:56:18. > :56:22.Disappointing, you can see how he feels about it. Rory still in the

:56:23. > :56:27.hunt after an opening round of 70. This was his reaction. I was 4-under

:56:28. > :56:31.with three to play, so it would have been nice to get it in at under 70

:56:32. > :56:37.at least. It's a tough course, you're going to make some bogeys

:56:38. > :56:41.around here. I just need to go out there and be aggressive tomorrow and

:56:42. > :56:46.get those shots back as quickly as possible. But I'm happy with the

:56:47. > :56:56.day's work overall. It really lifts the spirits from a UK perspective,

:56:57. > :57:02.six home players and an Irishman all in the top ten. The last defending

:57:03. > :57:07.champion to own an outright lead was Jack Nicklaus in the defence of his

:57:08. > :57:11.title, in 1966. Jordan Spieth is in illustrious company. No doubt about

:57:12. > :57:16.it, his record at Augusta is fantastic. His 66 in blustery

:57:17. > :57:21.conditions was beautifully crafted. This was his putt outnumbered ten, a

:57:22. > :57:27.little one down the hill there. This was his key. This was number 11. A

:57:28. > :57:31.little bit off to the right. Lovely pace, dead centre of the cup. He

:57:32. > :57:35.missed the green at 12, chipped up and it was a tricky little putt.

:57:36. > :57:42.Time and time again, if he got into trouble, the putter gave him. These

:57:43. > :57:46.are so tricky. That was a touch and a half. 66, the standout round.

:57:47. > :57:50.Ironically he had been struggling with the putter coming in here,

:57:51. > :57:53.looks like he's resolved that. A lovely acrobatics this wonderful day

:57:54. > :58:00.for Shane Lowry and for Ireland, totally uninhibited all striking.

:58:01. > :58:08.This shot was wonderful. Never left the flag, with that long iron. Just

:58:09. > :58:14.made a par at 11, but his round of 68 today was very special. Some

:58:15. > :58:19.beautiful pages and lovely shots as well. There is an awful lot to come

:58:20. > :58:28.as we move very quickly towards Masters weekend. We've got round two

:58:29. > :58:30.highlights from 1:30pm tomorrow. Live and uninterrupted coverage of

:58:31. > :58:34.the whole weekend's play from Augusta.

:58:35. > :58:44.We are on an hour early on Sunday night, from 6:30pm with the deciding

:58:45. > :58:48.round. On the line, a green jacket to be claimed. It has been a taxing

:58:49. > :58:57.and testing opening round but the man who has passed Augusta's

:58:58. > :59:00.examination today with top A star grades, top of the class as he has

:59:01. > :59:03.been for some time, Jordan Spieth.
