:06:40. > :06:44.stiff breeze, one thing in the players have favour is that it is
:06:44. > :06:49.blowing in the same direction. We have had some heavy showers that
:06:49. > :06:57.pass quickly, but this wind is blowing, 20 to 30 mph. Fingers
:06:57. > :07:05.crossed we won't need a brolly. But hopefully, if you do need it, it
:07:05. > :07:11.will be too windy to use it. Down at the 18th, there seems look very
:07:11. > :07:17.nice. One or two dark clouds, but generally, very good. The thing the
:07:17. > :07:21.players will have to contend with his this harsh, harsh breeze.
:07:21. > :07:27.It is looking rather challenging once again. We are going to get a

:07:32. > :07:38.has been under way here since ATM. Heres Tom Lewis, heading out to the
:07:38. > :07:42.first tee. He, of course, is chasing the silver medal as the
:07:43. > :07:51.leading amateur. He is going to be cheered all the way around, he is
:07:51. > :07:57.two shots ahead at his only competitor. Golf is available to

:08:12. > :08:16.Welcome. It is great to be here. Another fairy-tale leader board. So
:08:16. > :08:20.many possible stories. I can't imagine what is going to happen.
:08:20. > :08:24.has been a challenging week not just for the players, but for you,
:08:24. > :08:27.in terms of organisation, how has it gone? We are very pleased, the

:08:31. > :08:36.how British golf fans stayed loyal through it all, and see it through

:08:43. > :08:50.have done a phenomenal job, we are pleased with the way the champion
:08:50. > :08:55.is going. -- championship. It is good to bring the championship down
:08:55. > :09:00.to the south of England. This leaderboard, it almost represents
:09:00. > :09:04.two eras, those towards the end of their careers, Bjorn, Jimenez, and
:09:04. > :09:08.the new breed, all of them, seeking a first Major. We could have some
:09:08. > :09:13.amazing stories. I don't know if these more experienced players are
:09:13. > :09:16.better in the bad weather, perhaps they're more patient, I don't know.
:09:16. > :09:19.The younger ones are firing on all cylinders, Rickie Fowler has played
:09:19. > :09:24.in the worst of the weather throughout, he has played some
:09:24. > :09:29.wonderful golf. Let's hope he keeps it going. Unprecedented times of
:09:29. > :09:33.the Northern Irish golf, they are the world power at the moment!
:09:34. > :09:39.Clearly, after the success of Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, there

:09:51. > :09:55.right, up 1951, it was a rare British victory in those days. Port
:09:56. > :10:00.Rush has a wonderful golf course, it is a big, strong golf course.
:10:00. > :10:06.One of the things you might want to do with it, but it is not just
:10:06. > :10:10.about the golf course, it is about the infrastructure, the hotels,
:10:10. > :10:19.there certainly would be room at Port Rush, with the championship be
:10:19. > :10:22.a commercial success, also a factor. But we're not stupid here, we hear
:10:22. > :10:27.the emotion, we hear the pressure and we will take a look at it.
:10:27. > :10:31.you're not ruling it out. This week has been a sad week in some
:10:31. > :10:35.respects, the first open we have had since Seve's death, and done
:10:36. > :10:41.you have been honouring him in various ways. It has been
:10:41. > :10:45.appreciated by his family. I had a lovely e-mail from Seve's son
:10:45. > :10:50.yesterday, I think the Open Championship defined Seve,
:10:50. > :10:53.especially in the early part of his career, and it would be wrong to
:10:53. > :10:59.let the first championship since his death pass without marking his

:11:13. > :11:17.raising money through sales of the draw sheet, and a lot of sign age
:11:17. > :11:21.of Seve around the course. We are all remembering him this week. He
:11:21. > :11:27.would be the first to say, the show must go on. Indeed, we have had a

:11:32. > :11:37.the foundation and the family, he would like to thank you, he says,
:11:37. > :11:41.it is an honour and a huge pride to the family to see how much Seve was

:11:49. > :11:54.favourite memory of him? You imagine in private as well. -- you
:11:54. > :12:01.met him in private as well. 18th green at St Andrew's is my
:12:01. > :12:04.neighbour at memory, -- a favourite memory, I was tied your principal I
:12:04. > :12:11.first met him, I bumped into him in the corridor of a hotel at
:12:11. > :12:16.Carnoustie. He seemed to know I was, strangely, he said to be young son,
:12:16. > :12:22.in Spanish, he rose to chief. But Seve was relieved the chief. He put
:12:22. > :12:26.me at ease. We are hoping that the drama and excitement that Seve
:12:26. > :12:36.always brought the last day of the Open Championship will materialise
:12:36. > :12:36.
:12:36. > :13:37.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds
:13:37. > :13:42.Yes, great memories of three Open champions -- triumphs. Meanwhile,
:13:42. > :13:46.Rory McIlroy, just warming up for his 11:40am tee time. He has a lot
:13:46. > :13:51.of work to do if he is going to make it into the top 10. It would
:13:51. > :13:55.be unlikely for him to manufacture back-to-back Major victories. We
:13:56. > :14:00.have got another Major winner here with us, Suzanne Pedersen of Norway,
:14:00. > :14:05.currently the world number three woman golfer. You have just flown
:14:05. > :14:10.in, I understand. A bit a bit whirlwind visit. Would you make of
:14:10. > :14:14.this leader board? I have been watching, I watched yesterday, I
:14:14. > :14:17.would love to see Darren Clarke win today. I think it would be
:14:17. > :14:22.fantastic, not just for Northern Ireland to have the third Major
:14:22. > :14:27.with an almost a year, but I think for golf in general, he is a great
:14:27. > :14:31.guy, and a good ambassador for the game. I know you will be watching
:14:31. > :14:36.today, but we will be watching this lady in a couple of weeks, when she
:14:36. > :14:39.comes to the British Women's Open championship at Carnoustie. Judging
:14:40. > :14:49.by her past experiences and her CV, she has a very good chance of
:14:50. > :15:06.
:15:06. > :15:14.We are looking forward to that. This is not a social visit today.
:15:14. > :15:20.Tell us why she is here and what role she will be performing.
:15:20. > :15:25.Orange a uses the commercial success of the Open for projects
:15:25. > :15:29.such as attracting young people into golf. We appointed Padraig
:15:29. > :15:34.Harrington as a working for golf ambassador. Suzanne has also agreed
:15:34. > :15:41.to take on that role, starting right now. We could not be more
:15:41. > :15:51.pleased to have such a prominent person in the win in's game --
:15:51. > :15:51.
:15:51. > :16:00.women's game. Why did you decide to join the team? The R&A asked me to
:16:00. > :16:05.become part of the family and it was an honour. It is the body of
:16:05. > :16:10.golf. It is true. To help that and bring awareness of the game,
:16:10. > :16:14.especially to the children, the future of the game. The next
:16:15. > :16:19.generation is, for me, what makes me happy. We travel around the
:16:19. > :16:27.world. We are everywhere. If I can raise awareness to the game not
:16:27. > :16:32.only two children, but two different crowds, anything from
:16:32. > :16:37.adults to teaching programmes, anything, I would be glad to help.
:16:37. > :16:43.It is an honour to be part of this. Together with Padraig Harrington, I
:16:43. > :16:53.hope we can create a buzz around the game of golf. You have a lot on
:16:53. > :16:53.
:16:53. > :17:02.your plate already these days! can always fit it in. But it is not
:17:02. > :17:09.like work. It is part of whom you are. If you like to do something
:17:09. > :17:19.you do all day long, it is easy to try to give back. For me, it is
:17:19. > :17:24.about children. Earlier today, I passed the kids'' camp. To see
:17:24. > :17:28.young people not afraid to go out and try. It is great. There is a
:17:28. > :17:33.lot of progressive work being done by the R&A. People find it
:17:33. > :17:38.incongruous that you have a high- profile woman golfer, but she
:17:38. > :17:43.cannot join some of the club's you represent. I have been asked this
:17:43. > :17:52.question quite a lot. The subject is taking on a life of its own. We
:17:52. > :17:58.are aware of the issue. We take the Open Championship to the best links
:17:58. > :18:02.courses. Some of these clubs, because of their long history, have
:18:02. > :18:07.grown up as men Only clubs and started at a time when women did
:18:07. > :18:13.not play the game. There are very few of these clubs in Britain.
:18:13. > :18:18.There are some all-women clubs, as well. It is a matter for the
:18:18. > :18:23.members to determine how they want to act. Perhaps, it is a
:18:23. > :18:27.generational thing. If it were keeping women out of golf, I would
:18:27. > :18:33.be concerned. Because it is a small number, which are gradually
:18:33. > :18:39.reducing the, we have to let time take its course. Do you hope it
:18:39. > :18:46.will change soon? In general, I think the sport has changed a lot
:18:46. > :18:56.in the last 40 years. If I am applying for membership and I am
:18:56. > :19:03.rejected, so what? Life goes on. I have never been rejected to play at
:19:03. > :19:10.a golf course. They welcome us warmly wherever we go. I do not
:19:10. > :19:20.feel it is a big issue. Over here, you do find the old traditions. It
:19:20. > :19:21.
:19:21. > :19:28.is a part of golf, I guess you have to respect that part. This club
:19:28. > :19:32.will host the women's amateur Championship in a couple of years.
:19:32. > :19:37.There is no question you would be welcome to play anywhere, Suzanne.
:19:37. > :19:40.We look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks at Carnoustie. That
:19:40. > :19:45.will be a big challenge for everybody involved. We will not
:19:45. > :19:51.keep you. You are going on a helicopter, shortly, as part of
:19:51. > :19:57.your duties. It has been lovely to speak to you. Thanks for having me.
:19:57. > :20:03.Peter, we wish you all the best for the remainder of the 140 of the
:20:03. > :20:07.Open Championship. Thank you so much. If previous visits to the
:20:07. > :20:12.Open Championship at Royal St George's are anything to go by, it
:20:12. > :20:19.will be very dramatic. It is marvellous that Tom Watson, this is
:20:19. > :20:24.his fifth visit to Royal St George's, is very much a contender.
:20:24. > :20:31.Especially after the round of 72 in the worst of the weather. It was a
:20:32. > :20:36.lesson for everybody in how to plot your way around. He is warming up.
:20:36. > :20:42.I mention the drama that Royal St George's produces. Can it captured
:20:42. > :20:47.the emotion and excitement of eight years ago?
:20:47. > :20:51.Ben Curtis will not be here to repeat the magic of 2003, but the
:20:52. > :20:55.way he won that year remains long been a memory. When he arrived at
:20:55. > :21:01.the 18th, he thought he was two shots behind the leader, Thomas
:21:01. > :21:08.Bjorn. Bjorn.
:21:08. > :21:13.Thomas Bjorn on 16. Second shot. Not in this footprint! As he walked
:21:13. > :21:23.up here, he had no idea what was happening in the small bunker by
:21:23. > :21:27.
:21:27. > :21:31.the side of the 16th green. This is very sad indeed. He missed
:21:31. > :21:39.his chip for a birdie. He thought it was the only chance of making
:21:39. > :21:49.the play-off. He is going to have that for a
:21:49. > :21:52.
:21:52. > :22:00.double-bogey. Ben Curtis has a big putt for par, to finish at 1-under.
:22:00. > :22:06.That maybe the or winning putt. He does not know it. He has no idea of
:22:07. > :22:11.Thomas's trouble on the 16th. then had a tricky putt for par. A
:22:11. > :22:17.solitary voice told him he had tied for the lead. He did not believe
:22:17. > :22:22.the person. He left the green. On his way over, he hugged his good
:22:22. > :22:27.lady, who was excited. Perhaps understandably. Somebody said can
:22:27. > :22:32.you believe what Bjorn has done? He said he was making sure his score
:22:32. > :22:37.card was correct. Particularly, when you consider what had happened
:22:37. > :22:41.with a player been disqualified the day before. When that was done, he
:22:41. > :22:45.saw that he was top of the leaderboard. Somebody said, you
:22:45. > :22:50.need to prepare for a play-off. That was exactly what he did and
:22:50. > :22:58.went to the range. Thomas Bjorn. The biggest putt of
:22:58. > :23:05.his life. 16th and 17 have taken their toll. When he arrived, he
:23:05. > :23:15.said he did not know what to do. He started hitting 40 yard shots while
:23:15. > :23:18.
:23:18. > :23:23.his caddy watched TV. This is it. This is it. A brave effort, Thomas.
:23:23. > :23:32.While everything else unfolded on the 18th, his caddy opened the door
:23:32. > :23:40.and said, you are the Open champion. In this quiet corner, Ben Curtis
:23:41. > :23:44.was crowned Open champion. Makes you wonder how it will unravel this
:23:44. > :23:54.week. A Ben Curtis did not make the cut
:23:54. > :23:55.
:23:55. > :24:00.this time. Dan Walker talked about unravelling. Ken is keeping to get
:24:00. > :24:04.that out there. The scoreboard behind the 18th,
:24:04. > :24:09.which is used by the spectators and the people playing the last hole. A
:24:09. > :24:14.couple of gentlemen have found their spot. Why are you here early?
:24:14. > :24:21.Just to get a seat. To get my grandfather here without the hustle
:24:21. > :24:27.and bustle. You are looking cold. am cold at the moment. I will get a
:24:27. > :24:34.cup of tea and I will be all right. Have a great day. Over here of
:24:34. > :24:42.those... From which school? Cranleigh School. You do the
:24:42. > :24:47.leaderboard? Yes, for the hole Championship. And our rivals do the
:24:47. > :24:54.other side of the leaderboard. Right at the top of the leaderboard,
:24:54. > :24:59.Darren Clarke at 5-under. Dustin Johnson, 4-under, they will be out

:25:28. > :25:34.Alliss has been at the top of his game for many years. He must have
:25:34. > :25:39.some very happy memories. PETER ALLISS: 1961 was special. I
:25:39. > :25:45.was still playing. I went on for another nine years before I retired.
:25:45. > :25:48.It was the first time I did a broadcast. Palmer, playing his

:26:06. > :26:08.
:26:08. > :26:14.had, he may not have returned. Like Ben Hogan. He did not particularly
:26:14. > :26:23.like it. But he came back. I watched him close to and he was
:26:23. > :26:31.exciting. The way he played, the victory, and he smoked. Cigarette
:26:31. > :26:40.smoking was the thing them. He was like a cartoon character with a bit
:26:40. > :26:50.of ash left hanging there. And there is Arnold Palmer. The
:26:50. > :26:56.greatest player he today. He became a very welcome visitor.
:26:56. > :27:02.The champion, 1961, Arnold Palmer, United States of America will stop
