:00:28. > :00:34.It is here at last, the first day of the 145th Open Championship and I'm

:00:35. > :00:38.sure it will be worth the wait. The 12 year weight since we were last

:00:39. > :00:43.here at Royal Troon. This is the ninth time we've come to this corner

:00:44. > :00:48.of the Ayrshire coast and it's a smart bet that on Sunday evening, an

:00:49. > :00:52.American will be walking down this 18th fairway and onto the green,

:00:53. > :00:56.taking the applause of these mighty galleries and pausing in front of

:00:57. > :01:02.Troon's modest but rather lovely clubhouse holding the Claret Jug.

:01:03. > :01:06.Why? The US has enjoyed a 54 year reign at Troon. Their players have

:01:07. > :01:35.won the last six times it's been played for here.

:01:36. > :02:22.Yes, with its famous par-3 Postage Stamp and signature 11th hole

:02:23. > :02:26.running beside The Railway, The Old Course has sprung a few surprises

:02:27. > :02:29.over the years but there is no surprise that another American, the

:02:30. > :02:34.newly crowned US Open champion, Dustin Johnson, comes here as one of

:02:35. > :02:39.the red-hot favourites. He is fancied to make it three wins in a

:02:40. > :02:46.row this summer. He, like many others, isn't going to Rio for the

:02:47. > :02:47.Olympics but they are clean to brave Scotland this week. What a field

:02:48. > :03:53.this is. These are the worlds top ten players

:03:54. > :03:57.right now and the four, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, a career-high number

:03:58. > :04:01.two, Jordan Spieth and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy have taken it

:04:02. > :04:05.in terms to dominate the game over the last couple of years. You could

:04:06. > :04:10.make a case for each one of them and many more players here this week and

:04:11. > :04:15.it is silver, not gold but they are chasing at Troon, the Claret Jug.

:04:16. > :04:19.One of the most famous and oldest and most beautiful trophies in

:04:20. > :04:24.sport. Last year it was Zach Johnson from Iowa who touched it to his

:04:25. > :04:30.breast at St Andrews and he already owns a green jacket from Augusta.

:04:31. > :04:34.How this year's Masters champion, England's Danny Willett, would like

:04:35. > :04:40.to take this with him next year. You will remember the thrilling events

:04:41. > :04:43.at Augusta when the Yorkshireman capped his composure as Jordan

:04:44. > :04:51.Spieth was losing his with a brilliant round of 67. Called to the

:04:52. > :04:55.cabin for the first winner in two decade since Nick Faldo. Targeting

:04:56. > :05:06.his second major of the year and he had a 9:25am appointment on the

:05:07. > :05:12.first tee, as did Ken Brown. The Masters champion is preparing to tee

:05:13. > :05:16.off. The breeze is helping. Thinking about it, the driver out, and he's

:05:17. > :05:21.going for it. The champion of the world. Danny Willett, the Masters

:05:22. > :05:25.champion come up and running. Here are some of the headline attractions

:05:26. > :05:30.in the morning group in this large field of 156. Jordan Spieth got

:05:31. > :05:35.going alongside a fellow US Open champion, Justin Rose and the man

:05:36. > :05:39.who got so close at Oakmont, Ireland's Shane Lowry. Danny Willett

:05:40. > :05:45.in that power trio with Rickie Fowler still a major winner in

:05:46. > :05:52.waiting and Jason Day, who broke his major duck last summer. And at

:05:53. > :05:56.9:36am, McIlroy, teeing up for the first time since winning at Hoylake

:05:57. > :06:04.alongside Matsuyama and two time Masters champ, Bubba Watson. But who

:06:05. > :06:07.better to lead in the local boy made good, Colin Montgomerie who battled

:06:08. > :06:13.through qualifying to return after six years away. The three-time

:06:14. > :06:18.senior major winner hit the opening tee shot at 6:35am. All happening

:06:19. > :06:24.just a wedge away from his family home. He made a double bogey but he

:06:25. > :06:30.battled back, five birdies to go 3-under at the turn. You make your

:06:31. > :06:35.score in the first nine and you protect it coming in. This was a

:06:36. > :06:42.gimme birdie on the first the Johnson. Fellow American Patrick

:06:43. > :06:46.Reed kick-started his round on the third. This one, straight in for

:06:47. > :06:52.eagle. He went to 2-under par and picked up more on watcher, six and

:06:53. > :06:58.seven with birdies to go 4-under par. Colin Montgomerie gave back a

:06:59. > :07:05.shot on 11th and tried not to leak another one on the 13th -- on four.

:07:06. > :07:15.This is a par putt and a half. Still 2-under, Monty. Chapman is proving

:07:16. > :07:18.to be a real player this year and the Californian, lapping up the

:07:19. > :07:24.Scottish Sun with a birdie on his first in his debut. Justin Thomas

:07:25. > :07:27.ripping up the front nine, getting birdie on the first four and here is

:07:28. > :07:33.another one on the seventh to move to the head of the field, 5-under

:07:34. > :07:39.par. Amat has made huge headlines at St Andrews last year. -- amateurs.

:07:40. > :07:42.Only two this year, and Scott Gregory won the amateur Championship

:07:43. > :07:50.last month. His fourth birdie of the Day coming on ten, 4-under par, a

:07:51. > :07:53.dream start for the 21-year-old. Light winds, sunshine, perfect

:07:54. > :08:03.morning and look who's making the most of it. Six Americans on the

:08:04. > :08:10.leaderboard. For Bjorn Alderson, coming here ranked as the 200-1

:08:11. > :08:15.outsider. -- for Bjorn Alderson two Tour Bjorn

:08:16. > :08:20.is the opening day of the Championship, watched by Andrew

:08:21. > :08:28.Cotter, Ken Brown, Mark James and Peter Alliss. COMMENTATOR: Thank

:08:29. > :08:31.you, welcome to Royal Troon. For the up team playing of this great

:08:32. > :08:36.Championship and it's the most glorious day, or it was when I

:08:37. > :08:43.picked from under the covers at about 5:20am, eager not to miss Mr

:08:44. > :08:46.Colin Montgomerie's opening tee shot and the next few days are going to

:08:47. > :08:55.be very different in terms of the weather. Play begun from 6:35am.

:08:56. > :09:01.McIlroy. Here he is, and now he is at the 2nd holed. He drove to the

:09:02. > :09:06.left on the first, finding a bunker, but made the putt for par and looks

:09:07. > :09:09.like he'll do the same thing here. The opening three holes that very

:09:10. > :09:20.simple, under 400 yards. Jimmy Walker. 2-under par, he's only

:09:21. > :09:25.played four holes. A birdie putt and easy, what a lovely game it is on a

:09:26. > :09:32.day like this, with the greens running true. 3-under par. McIlroy

:09:33. > :09:36.is trying to finish off with par on the second holed. A good save --

:09:37. > :09:52.hole. Jordan Spieth hit two beautiful

:09:53. > :09:59.shots onto this fourth green. This is the three. I don't think he's

:10:00. > :10:09.given it enough. He is assured four and a birdie, the first of the day.

:10:10. > :10:14.Bubba Watson on the tee, you can see the close proximity to the beach. It

:10:15. > :10:20.really is a golf course by the sea, here at Troon. That's a huge tee

:10:21. > :10:26.shot, scampering down the fairway. Is it going to reach the green? It

:10:27. > :10:33.could be a one, this could be the longest in history. Sorry about

:10:34. > :10:42.that, did I drive through you? I didn't think I could reach! Now,

:10:43. > :10:51.Justin Rose, the home hero. Great things expected this week. Justin's

:10:52. > :11:05.supporters. Wiggling to the right. Steady.

:11:06. > :11:16.Not the best swing from Justin Thomas, his second shot to ten. I

:11:17. > :11:22.think something put him off. Rickie Fowler on the third, second shot

:11:23. > :11:29.over the back. This is quite a lengthy chip for three. More

:11:30. > :11:45.realistically, up and down for par. What they three -- a free. That will

:11:46. > :11:48.get the blood pumping. -- a three. After that we at second shot from

:11:49. > :12:02.Justin Thomas he's been left with this. Not much more he can do apart

:12:03. > :12:06.from log it on -- lob it on and get within 20 feet. Elevated green,

:12:07. > :12:14.running off on both sides, so he'll be careful it didn't run off. Bubba

:12:15. > :12:26.Watson, after that majestic tee shot on the 382 yard par-4. This is for

:12:27. > :12:28.two. Oh, Bubba. Bubba! The wind is freshening and Ken has been out to

:12:29. > :12:40.see how it can affect play. I do like to be beside the seaside

:12:41. > :12:45.and Troon is by the seaside, as you'd expect, there's a bit of wind

:12:46. > :12:50.about. Let's have a look at the plan of the golf course. The clubhouse is

:12:51. > :12:54.way in the distance. The opening nine holes, let's have a look at

:12:55. > :13:01.this plan. We have the clubhouse here. And the first, second, third,

:13:02. > :13:04.fourth, fifth and sixth holes all winning in the same direction and

:13:05. > :13:12.the wind is generally playing from the West, that direction. So you can

:13:13. > :13:14.see. These opening six holes all played down breeze, so they are

:13:15. > :13:22.relatively easy and then there's a little loop at the end, 7-9, then,

:13:23. > :13:27.11 and 12 going the other way and 13-18, it going directly into the

:13:28. > :13:30.breeze. Those closing nine holes are really tough. You have to make your

:13:31. > :13:35.score on the front nine and hold on the back nine. This really is a

:13:36. > :13:42.fantastic place. These opening holes are critical. The back nine, by

:13:43. > :13:48.jingo, so tricky if the wind is in the wrong direction.

:13:49. > :14:00.Nestling in the hay bales and the ferns. Danny Willett for birdie. He

:14:01. > :14:19.came up short. This is for 2-under after four. Oh, beautifully done.

:14:20. > :14:32.The long par-5 6th. Spieth, from 255 with a long iron. Pitching just

:14:33. > :14:36.short, I'd imagine. Ooh, short and right but what a friendly bounce

:14:37. > :14:47.that was! You dream about bounces like that. Chance of an eagle for

:14:48. > :14:52.Spieth. Hello! It should be the other way around, the dog should be

:14:53. > :15:01.following the ball. Looks like he could keep off the chips.

:15:02. > :15:08.Jimmy Walker, birdie attempt on seven. O, walloped them are well

:15:09. > :15:24.done. -- walloped, well done. Dustin

:15:25. > :15:30.Johnson on the sixth, the long hole. Lovely shot. Just firing it at the

:15:31. > :15:42.pin, he really is, in great form at the moment. But these are the easy

:15:43. > :15:49.holes. Spieth, for an eagle on the sixth. As he hit it? A bit of a

:15:50. > :15:54.dribbler. He'll be a couple under after six. Solid start but this

:15:55. > :16:08.field are tearing the front nine apart.

:16:09. > :16:21.Thomas, in trouble on 11th. But not any more! --: 11. Isn't it a funny

:16:22. > :16:25.game, one minute you are cursing and then you play a shot like that, the

:16:26. > :16:32.ball disappears and then you are happy again. Kevin Chappell on 12,

:16:33. > :16:40.this is for a birdie to go to 3-under par. Yes. The Americans are

:16:41. > :16:49.really having a good day at the moment. A cheque on the leaderboard,

:16:50. > :16:55.early days of course -- checking the leaderboard. Thomas and Reed were

:16:56. > :16:58.5-under par moments ago. You can see that they are making hay on the

:16:59. > :17:04.first nine, which you have to do under the these conditions, similar

:17:05. > :17:08.to Royal Lytham St Annes, you make score going out because it is much

:17:09. > :17:18.more difficult on the inward nine, especially the last six holes.

:17:19. > :17:28.Coleman, rewriting up on 18. This is for a round of 71 after a double

:17:29. > :17:32.bogey start. -- Colin Montgomerie wrapping it up. Well done. Not

:17:33. > :17:34.looking great on the leaderboard, but a lot of tough holes on the

:17:35. > :17:49.inward nine. Good performance. Jimmy Walker on the eighth hole. A

:17:50. > :17:52.bunker off the tee he had to play out sideways, and going in for four,

:17:53. > :18:04.only dropping one shot. Slight relief. Back to 3-under par. Danny

:18:05. > :18:13.Willett. Chasing a long iron into the sixth Cole. Par-5. -- hole. Not

:18:14. > :18:26.that long, judging by the height. Dutiful shot from Willett. A good

:18:27. > :18:32.chance of an eagle three. -- beautiful shot. After the wonderful

:18:33. > :18:41.tee shot, this is a birdie, for Watson. Five of the best played

:18:42. > :18:46.holes you would see. Couldn't be much better than that. Well, the

:18:47. > :18:51.first round players are in. Colin Montgomery was first. Despite your

:18:52. > :18:56.experience and everything you've achieved, can you tell us how you

:18:57. > :19:00.felt on the first tee? It was right up there. I have played in the Ryder

:19:01. > :19:05.Cup if you times and that was right up there. Thank goodness it was only

:19:06. > :19:09.a 4-iron. I hit a reasonable shot but after that it was a bit silly. I

:19:10. > :19:13.had to finish the hole with a double bogey six but at the same time, it

:19:14. > :19:22.was a great honour and I'm glad to get out alive and finished with 71.

:19:23. > :19:27.-- finish. Reed on 12 after a wayward tee shot, chopping it out,

:19:28. > :19:35.trying to judge the bounce and spin. My goodness, he's done it

:19:36. > :19:47.brilliantly well too. Looking down from on high. McIlroy.

:19:48. > :20:01.His third to the sixth. The longest hole on the course.

:20:02. > :20:12.Reed. Beautifully controlled, out of the rough, making a birdie and

:20:13. > :20:22.moving to 5-under par. He's out on his own, the by one. -- the leader

:20:23. > :20:31.by one. Let's see if McIlroy can find a birdie on the sixth. Hit it.

:20:32. > :20:36.McIlroy gets one on the sixth. Didn't quite reach the green in two

:20:37. > :20:43.but a little pitch and in it goes, 2-under par.

:20:44. > :21:02.Long par four, Justin Thomas, his second. Go left! Left! What a

:21:03. > :21:11.cracker Jack. A birdie chance, not many birdies on 13 today.

:21:12. > :21:20.Bubba Watson at the 6th. He is 4-under par. This is for another

:21:21. > :21:27.birdie. He left his first putt a little bit tentatively. But he makes

:21:28. > :21:32.amends, another one for Bubba Watson, birdies on the first, third,

:21:33. > :21:41.fourth, fifth and sixth, tied for the lead with Patrick Reed.

:21:42. > :21:49.Justin Thomas, beautiful second shot into 13, this is to tie with the

:21:50. > :21:54.leaders. What a beauty. What a beauty. The 13th produces so few

:21:55. > :22:04.birdies and he's made it, he's 5-under. The tee shot of McIlroy on

:22:05. > :22:13.seven, Ken. 400 yards. You beauty. That is flush. Is it going to get a

:22:14. > :22:19.decent bounce? Oh, my goodness, go on. Surely he's not going to drive

:22:20. > :22:25.it 400 yards. Has he made it? Not quite. Just a little rise up to the

:22:26. > :22:35.green stopping it, that was enormous. Kevin Chappell.

:22:36. > :22:47.Run away, ball. Yes! Just enough pace to hold the line. What a birdie

:22:48. > :22:54.that is, Ken, on the 13th. That is rare.

:22:55. > :23:05.Justin Rose, reaching the turn with a birdie. So so from Rose, 35 is the

:23:06. > :23:11.very least you'd expect from this gentle front nine. It was an

:23:12. > :23:14.enormous drive from McIlroy, nearly to the front edge of the green.

:23:15. > :23:24.Heavy-handed chip, but still a birdie chance. He likes it, he likes

:23:25. > :23:27.it. He loves it. He has hit some good ones this morning, he struggled

:23:28. > :23:34.to start with but McIlroy is moving through the field. 3-under, very

:23:35. > :23:40.nice. We can see the top of the ball but he is a long way back. The wrong

:23:41. > :23:47.line into this one. Look at that, he's moved it nicely, chasing it up.

:23:48. > :23:52.Patrick's off. What a shot from Patrick Reed, it's going to scuttle

:23:53. > :23:55.an. Oh, that's cruel. That was an extraordinarily good shot but look

:23:56. > :24:03.where he is now. That's no reward for that.

:24:04. > :24:11.Postage Stamp, Rory on the tee, a big gallery around it. That's a

:24:12. > :24:21.marvellous shot. Has the overcooked it? He is drawing it, oh,

:24:22. > :24:27.magnificent. What a shot. Hey hey! Well done. That was hanging on for

:24:28. > :24:38.dear life, beautifully hit shot. Wonderful. Bubba, he's overcooked

:24:39. > :24:46.it. Shooting through the breeze, it may be long. Look where it's

:24:47. > :24:51.finished. That's an playable. -- that's not playable. As a

:24:52. > :24:59.left-handed player I don't know if he can scoop it somewhere. Thomas

:25:00. > :25:06.for par on 14, trouble in the front right bunker. He's rattled it in,

:25:07. > :25:14.what a par saved from Justin Thomas. He stays at 5-under, in a tie for

:25:15. > :25:19.the lead with Bubba Watson. You wonder how you can go wrong, you

:25:20. > :25:22.look at the distance of the Postage Stamp, but Bubba Watson showing how

:25:23. > :25:34.you can do it. Going over the back, the chip rolling back to here. That

:25:35. > :25:44.is for a double bogey. Patrick Reed was in a bit of bother, in the front

:25:45. > :25:49.left bunker. This is for his par. What a save that is from Patrick

:25:50. > :25:51.Reed. Clinging on on the back nine, dropping a shot on 13. Just one

:25:52. > :26:10.behind Justin Thomas. So, Bubba Watson birdied the first,

:26:11. > :26:14.third, fourth, fifth and sixth. And now getting six on the Postage

:26:15. > :26:26.Stamp. 124 yards of unhappiness for him today. After a brilliant tee

:26:27. > :26:33.shot. Three birdies in a row, six, seven and eight. 4-under par, just

:26:34. > :26:44.one behind. McIlroy, two, six, for Watson. So, the state of affairs,

:26:45. > :26:46.Justin Thomas is on top. Moving into that group on 4-under par, McIlroy,

:26:47. > :27:22.with three in a row. Kevin Chappell has been in all sorts

:27:23. > :27:26.of trouble here on 16. You think it's a birdie chance, par-5, but

:27:27. > :27:33.this is the seven. Eight, the Kevin Chappell. He takes an almighty

:27:34. > :27:39.tumble down the leaderboard -- for Kevin Chappell. Justin Thomas on 15,

:27:40. > :27:49.this is to drop just one. He pitched up to here. Going in for a double

:27:50. > :27:58.bogey. Double bogey for Justin Thomas, slips back to 3-under now.

:27:59. > :28:03.Great run coming to an end. Matt Jones on the fourth, this is a putt

:28:04. > :28:16.for birdie, to go to 3-under. It looks good and it is, my word, what

:28:17. > :28:22.a start. He is on a sizzler. Soomin Lee, the Korean 22-year-old. Winning

:28:23. > :28:26.in Shen Zen earlier in the season. Getting two on the Postage Stamp. He

:28:27. > :28:37.is tied for the lead now, 4-under par. Louis Oosthuizen on 14. The

:28:38. > :28:42.most gentle pathway out there, perhaps. All sorts of trouble today

:28:43. > :28:52.-- par-3. He needs something magical to happen. This might yet!

:28:53. > :28:56.Oosthuizen! His albatross in the second hole at Augusta and more

:28:57. > :29:07.magic from him. Back to level par, simple as that. The 1st hole in this

:29:08. > :29:12.year's Open Championship. Danny Willett, a bit of a struggle here on

:29:13. > :29:23.ten, a bit untidy. But this is for a five. One shot dropped. Quite

:29:24. > :29:32.alarming, the ten, 11, 12, the scoring so far. Early days, but

:29:33. > :29:37.sixes and sevens, a couple of nines. Patrick Reed for a par on 15. He

:29:38. > :29:41.doesn't waste much time. Rather refreshing, and in she goes. So

:29:42. > :30:01.easy, well done, sir. Soomin Lee, 4-under par. The

:30:02. > :30:08.surprise package. A young fellow. It won't, it couldn't, it has! Would

:30:09. > :30:13.you believe it? Finding the tradesman 's entrance, the back

:30:14. > :30:18.door, going through the pavilion, through the patio doors.

:30:19. > :30:29.Extraordinary. Out in 32, 4-under par. Well done, young sir. McIlroy.

:30:30. > :30:34.Nicely done. Good par on ten. One or two sixes at ten today. McIlroy

:30:35. > :30:36.finds his way through to the 11th tee, the dangerous 11th and Ken has

:30:37. > :30:48.been to have a All the way down the right of the

:30:49. > :30:52.11th is the railway line. It is out of bounds. This is one of the

:30:53. > :30:58.hardest holes on the course. But look at why. BT is here. This is the

:30:59. > :31:03.railway line. The difficulty is you are hitting across the anger of the

:31:04. > :31:08.fairway. It is quite narrow and difficult to judge. If you missed

:31:09. > :31:12.the fairway, come and have a look. All the way down the right is this

:31:13. > :31:23.tremendous course. You think there might be relief on the left, but

:31:24. > :31:29.there are certainly is not. You cannot see the fairway from BT. The

:31:30. > :31:34.green is no pushover either. Looking back to the 11th tee and over the

:31:35. > :31:42.top of the course at the top, here is McIlroy. This whole averaging 5.1

:31:43. > :31:48.and it is a power for. Not often that happens early in the peace. He

:31:49. > :31:55.smacks one away. Danger everywhere. He is unsure. He is on the sure. Oh

:31:56. > :32:07.my good God. Where is he? He might be all right. Now, lucky.

:32:08. > :32:17.Up ahead on the green at the 11th, or near the green, is gay. A super

:32:18. > :32:38.little chip. For underplaying the tension.

:32:39. > :32:50.Conditions are quite benign at the moment. There is a strong breeze.

:32:51. > :32:58.This is his chance for an eagle. The simplest of birdies. He takes the

:32:59. > :33:04.lead at four under par. A four way tie on the opening morning of the

:33:05. > :33:08.145th Open Championship. It is Patrick Reed, Rory McIlroy,

:33:09. > :33:18.seemingly, one of a record seven wins. You can see the scores are

:33:19. > :33:25.made on the way out, defended on the way home. Gary player said it was

:33:26. > :33:29.the most difficult back nine in the world when the wind was blowing.

:33:30. > :33:42.There is a breeze now and it is asking questions.

:33:43. > :34:09.It was elevated green, surrounded by bunkers. He is short, yes she is. A

:34:10. > :34:17.long way from the hole. Could have been a worse spot than that. McIlroy

:34:18. > :34:22.at the 11th. There are short, very fortunate with his tee shot found a

:34:23. > :34:33.decent life. That is a good pace. That is beautiful beautifully

:34:34. > :34:45.judged. Coming up the last. A 3-under par. He is drawing into the

:34:46. > :34:50.front left end into the breeze and that is brilliant. We won't see

:34:51. > :35:05.better than that today. McIlroy gets is for.

:35:06. > :35:13.Patrick Reed pouting for a two from long range. That is very well done

:35:14. > :35:25.indeed. A good three. An excellent round he is putting together, but

:35:26. > :35:33.one left. You would expect him to make a birdie at the 6th. Justin

:35:34. > :35:38.Thomas finishes with a birdie at the last for a round of 67. The first

:35:39. > :35:43.appearance in the Open Championship for the American. That is a tidy

:35:44. > :35:52.card which included a double fogey -- double bogey. Excellent play.

:35:53. > :36:01.Soomin Lee. You can see his caddy there. This is his third shot at the

:36:02. > :36:10.11th. It is a beauty. It is a real beauty. That was the closest we have

:36:11. > :36:17.seen a birdie there today. What do you make of Troon playing conditions

:36:18. > :36:23.today? It is as came as we will see it. I try to take advantage of the

:36:24. > :36:27.day and, that is what I was saying this morning, I have never played a

:36:28. > :36:33.course where I literally have no clue what are the winning score will

:36:34. > :36:36.be. I don't know if it will be over par, even power, under par. You

:36:37. > :36:52.don't know. You play what you are dealt. A brave Taoiseach. -- key

:36:53. > :37:09.shot. He will have that for a birdie.

:37:10. > :37:16.Bubba Watson for a power. He has let things slip away dramatically over

:37:17. > :37:28.the last four or five overs. He was steaming along and now level power.

:37:29. > :37:35.Read at the last and he has done it. 66 shots for Patrick Reed. That will

:37:36. > :37:43.take some beating. There is a look at his card. Patrick Reed's opening

:37:44. > :37:52.66 equals the lowest opening round score at Royal Troon before. Lots of

:37:53. > :37:58.good putts today the 24 is something you will look on with a lot of

:37:59. > :38:03.pride. I haven't added up the stats but to hear 24 ports means a lot. I

:38:04. > :38:10.have been working hard on it and I had a lot of putts today. They were

:38:11. > :38:14.from just off the edges and that is the key thing. Back home, the greens

:38:15. > :38:19.are much faster but we don't have this much wind. It is one of those

:38:20. > :38:35.things I had to get comfortable with, hitting it hard enough and I

:38:36. > :38:47.could do that. Pat Jones. A big hug after the ninth. He is therefore

:38:48. > :38:53.too. It is a power for. If anyone can float one in their nicely it is

:38:54. > :39:13.Rory. Going down the shaft, trying to keep the ball down a little.

:39:14. > :39:19.Where has that gone? If that is it, that is an eagle shot he has left

:39:20. > :39:30.himself. Matt Jones is at the front of the ninth and a good break off

:39:31. > :39:45.the key. Up the slope. Up the slope. It dong. He joins read at the top of

:39:46. > :39:54.the leaderboard. Nothing like a little snack when you have an itchy

:39:55. > :40:00.head. What am I going to do here? Pictured in the bag? Lob over the

:40:01. > :40:07.top? There is no chance of pitching it onto the green and stopping it.

:40:08. > :40:19.Danger is if you miss it. Oh dear. That wasn't on the programme at all.

:40:20. > :40:24.A glorious long putt at the 13th and he bloated stone dead. A birdie

:40:25. > :40:34.chance year. Justin Rose, he has done it. He has made a birdie at the

:40:35. > :40:39.15th. How about that for a card? His second birdie at number 15 today. He

:40:40. > :40:46.moves to 2-under. 17 and Jamie Donaldson. For a too. He has got it.

:40:47. > :41:12.2-under par for the Welshman. McIlroy. Oh my word. It is a double

:41:13. > :41:18.bogey. The back nine really is something. The 13th claims McIlroy.

:41:19. > :41:31.Back to 2-under. Porteus. Another birdie putt. He has just gone three,

:41:32. > :41:43.three and another three. Who is this new man? Who is the stranger? Haydn

:41:44. > :41:47.Porteous is the 22-year-old from Johannesburg in South Africa and the

:41:48. > :41:53.one the Johannesburg open in January to qualify here. He recently posed

:41:54. > :42:00.naked in a newspaper article called my sporting body. We have seen

:42:01. > :42:07.rather a lot of him recently. There is McIlroy, sort of a little bit

:42:08. > :42:25.plugged. He has got to get it out on the back of the green. The best he

:42:26. > :42:28.could do. 20 minutes ago he was in the middle of the fairway faced with

:42:29. > :42:33.the middle Ireland to the green and made a mess of it. People abruptly

:42:34. > :42:40.dropped another one here, or maybe two. Fowler with summer break on

:42:41. > :42:50.this one for his two on the 14th. Left to right. He gets back the shot

:42:51. > :42:58.he lost in the 12th. Back to 2-under. Leading the way in this

:42:59. > :43:05.group at the moment. It is a par putt for McIlroy. A long putt from

:43:06. > :43:17.the back of the 14th. There should be a little bit of right to left at

:43:18. > :43:22.the end. He is going to drop at least one of the back of that double

:43:23. > :43:28.bogey on the 13th. He is unravelling a bit. Justin Rose, shorter and he

:43:29. > :43:42.could've puttered through here. Plenty of green to play with. A

:43:43. > :43:54.knock in a birdie to come for Rose. That would get him to 3-under.

:43:55. > :44:05.McIlroy needs this one to drop just one. He certainly does. He missed

:44:06. > :44:07.one of this length on the last. Not this time. Three shots dropped in

:44:08. > :44:28.the space of 25 minutes. Here is Haydn Porteous, the young

:44:29. > :44:35.South African going so well. Right to left. He is a rolling them in

:44:36. > :44:41.just now and Haydn Porteous, the 22-year-old South African, leads the

:44:42. > :44:51.Open Championship. What a run. Evil par, eagle birdie, birdie. Thank you

:44:52. > :45:05.and good night. Back to Rory McIlroy. Just a short Aaron. What a

:45:06. > :45:16.short Aaron. Write down the flag. A chance to get one back. This is Matt

:45:17. > :45:23.Jones at the 11th. This is his fourth shot. He has had all sorts of

:45:24. > :45:26.troubles on this goal. He has at least been able to hit it forward

:45:27. > :45:34.and he hasn't done that very well and he has knocked it behind the

:45:35. > :45:48.trees. That might be very difficult. Jordan Spieth. His chance of V2.

:45:49. > :45:54.Hazard. He -- Spieth is into the red figures. Just trying not to rule

:45:55. > :46:00.himself out of anything at this early stage. Matt Jones is in all

:46:01. > :46:08.sorts of trouble on the 11th. Not the first to suffer here. This is

:46:09. > :46:23.his sixth shot. Well left. There we are. The sixth shot was a beauty. It

:46:24. > :46:36.is too gone, back to 3-under. A huge drive here. That is better. That is

:46:37. > :46:52.well done. He is mercurial, you would say.

:46:53. > :47:08.All sorts of problems for all sorts of people on the 11th. He goes to

:47:09. > :47:15.4-under. He is the first to get a birdie on the 11th. Haydn Porteous

:47:16. > :47:21.has made it cuts this year. He has missed his last three in a row. He

:47:22. > :47:27.is enjoying his open debut. One shot ahead and he has only played nine

:47:28. > :47:44.holes. Great to see Jamie Donaldson in. Further down, another good round

:47:45. > :47:48.from Harrington. A par round of the back-to-back winner of this

:47:49. > :47:55.Championship in 2007 and 2008. Jordan Spieth in trouble on 18th.

:47:56. > :48:12.Jordan Spieth has had a drop on the 18th from way off to the right.

:48:13. > :48:28.He is making heavy weather of the final hole. Good roller. What a

:48:29. > :48:37.part. What a birdie on the 13th. They will all be trying that

:48:38. > :48:46.technique. Why not? Jordan Spieth, third shot at the 18th. That sounded

:48:47. > :49:02.a bit fluffy, didn't it? It certainly did.

:49:03. > :49:14.Justin Rose, long birdie attempt. It is creeping on down there. He knew

:49:15. > :49:23.enough added. Not to be, but a strong finish. Birdied 16. Powers on

:49:24. > :49:32.17 and 18. A round of 68 for Justin Rose. Last year was his first top

:49:33. > :49:37.ten since 1998 as a 17-year-old. He doesn't have a great record at the

:49:38. > :49:44.open but a good start here. Spieth at the final hole. Making a big mess

:49:45. > :49:53.of it so far. He just touches it over the top of the hill and that is

:49:54. > :50:01.a drop shot. He deserved no better. He just fiddled about. Ends up with

:50:02. > :50:02.a five. Just doesn't seem to see the lines on the greens here that he

:50:03. > :50:28.would add somewhere like Agusta. Beautiful from Stricker. Plenty of

:50:29. > :50:33.rounds in the 60s. One came from Justin Rose. A great way to start

:50:34. > :50:39.the open. Are you pleased with the score? It could have been better.

:50:40. > :50:45.Everyone says that but it legitimately could have been better.

:50:46. > :50:51.Hit the ball fantastically well. It 16 greens. The only blips were six

:50:52. > :50:57.and seven where I didn't birdied the par 56 which lead to frustration so

:50:58. > :51:01.I was aggressive and easy shot on seven. Those two holes stop

:51:02. > :51:06.lamenting that I was happy with the way I dug in. With the meat of the

:51:07. > :51:10.course to come from eight onwards I put together a good round and a good

:51:11. > :51:17.score. There were a couple that were left out in the first six holes.

:51:18. > :51:25.Soomin Lee to avoid dropping his first shot of the day. A birdie

:51:26. > :51:35.chance. The shot gone, back to 3-under. A none too convincing

:51:36. > :51:51.bunker shot. It is a six. His first slip. Fighting to save par on the

:51:52. > :52:05.13th. He let one slip as well. A big group on 3-under. Porteus. This for

:52:06. > :52:18.his bogey. He drops 2-4 but nothing too serious. 4.85 average, the 11th.

:52:19. > :52:24.A reasonably tricky par for. Bubba Watson at the final hole. Just to

:52:25. > :52:36.the left of where his headers. Work was. A bit of movement. Beautifully

:52:37. > :52:44.struck. Beautifully played. We have seen a lot of quality shots today.

:52:45. > :52:51.Now McIlroy. McIlroy will probably be drawing it. We will see when it

:52:52. > :53:08.bounces and spins. Pretty strict. A good shot. He will have that for a

:53:09. > :53:19.68. Soomin Lee has a routine and he puts his left arm on his chest. He

:53:20. > :53:26.is left. Confused by the reader. A rush of four birdies for McIlroy on

:53:27. > :53:33.the front nine. He has had problems since then. This for a 68. He Reed

:53:34. > :53:58.it pretty well, it just wouldn't come back. No damage with a 69.

:53:59. > :54:08.Bubba Watson. A beautiful second shot down here. It has to drop and

:54:09. > :54:17.it does. Bubba Watson closes with a birdie. A round of 70. Off to a

:54:18. > :54:26.solid start here. Plenty of red on the card. Looking down the South

:54:27. > :54:30.Beach, that is the view of the top of the leaderboard. Patrick Reed

:54:31. > :54:34.with the 1-shot advantage over at Justin Thomas and Steve Stricker. A

:54:35. > :54:39.good round from Justin Rose. He finished in the top ten at St

:54:40. > :54:43.Andrews last year. Good progress from Richard Sterne E. He only

:54:44. > :54:49.grabbed a qualifying pace at the French Open a couple of weeks ago.

:54:50. > :54:55.Rory McIlroy, a round of 69. He is on the second page of the

:54:56. > :55:05.leaderboard at 2-under. Let's hear from him. 32 gone out. He must be

:55:06. > :55:10.pleased. I knew going into data that is where you need to make your score

:55:11. > :55:16.on the front nine. Especially with the wind direction. Bubba had three

:55:17. > :55:19.equal parts on the front nine. It is the nine where you have the make

:55:20. > :55:24.your score and they did that and give myself a cushion going into the

:55:25. > :55:29.tougher back nine. A lot of players are saying they just tough two

:55:30. > :55:34.hanging on the back nine. I felt like I was hitting it better. I

:55:35. > :55:40.didn't feel like I was hanging in. The six on 13 and I let it linger

:55:41. > :55:43.and made a bogey on 14. That didn't help but it felt like there were

:55:44. > :55:49.some chances. 15 wasn't playing as long as it has all week. 16 is a

:55:50. > :55:57.reachable par-5. There were chances on the back nine. This is the best

:55:58. > :56:05.we will see in terms of conditions so, thankfully, I am not too far

:56:06. > :56:09.behind the lead. A decent day work. It into European Tour winner, Mark

:56:10. > :56:13.James joins me. Rory making the point that there were chances when

:56:14. > :56:17.he was coming home on the background. The wind dipped a bit at

:56:18. > :56:24.that point. As he said, that could be a rare thing. It will be the last

:56:25. > :56:33.time this week. Interestingly, it has dropped. It is very calm now.

:56:34. > :56:36.The players who have got the calmest conditions for the 11 o'clock

:56:37. > :56:40.onwards and somewhere around that is the cut-off point for the field.

:56:41. > :56:45.Those players will be of very early tomorrow morning. The wind is

:56:46. > :56:49.supposed to get up during the day but if it is quite for three or four

:56:50. > :56:54.hours, those players who have had the best could have the best

:56:55. > :56:57.tomorrow and could get a huge jump. Patrick Reed mastered conditions and

:56:58. > :57:02.the breeze was in his is coming back. He seems to love Scotland. He

:57:03. > :57:07.was the top scorer at the Ryder Cup a couple of years ago at Gleneagles

:57:08. > :57:12.and one beautifully with a top ten finish at the Scottish Open. He is

:57:13. > :57:18.coming into form at the right time. He is an interesting player. He gave

:57:19. > :57:23.it everything at Gleneagles. I thought I would hate this guy, but I

:57:24. > :57:26.liked him. I still love watching him play. He is getting better and

:57:27. > :57:32.better and he will hang around all week and he really just looks

:57:33. > :57:37.comfortable on this course, comfortable in the wind and he had

:57:38. > :57:43.it tougher earlier. Yes, he is very dangerous in this Championship. It

:57:44. > :57:49.is the Eagle early on that catapulted him in terms of his

:57:50. > :57:55.momentum, straight in there and home with that record equalling open

:57:56. > :57:58.round of 66. His lowest round ever in a major Championship. Great stuff

:57:59. > :58:05.from him and lots of Americans on this board. Very little emotion from

:58:06. > :58:10.him. Keeping everything in check. That bodes well for if he gets into

:58:11. > :58:14.contention. He looked to have control of what was going on. Easy

:58:15. > :58:21.to think the club up and your brain gets a bit scrambled. Let's find out

:58:22. > :58:25.the Wii will be watching in the afternoon. It takes nearly ten hours

:58:26. > :58:30.of tee times to get all the players under way and amongst the notable

:58:31. > :58:35.ones in the afternoon, the trio he finished second, third and fourth

:58:36. > :58:40.last times. Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood earning

:58:41. > :58:45.his first top four in a major back then. Just after two o'clock was

:58:46. > :58:50.when Dustin Johnson set out on his quest to win back-to-back Majors and

:58:51. > :58:54.three titles in a row. Martin Kaymer and Russell Knox from Scotland. The

:58:55. > :58:59.leading European on the US money list right now. Then came Zach

:59:00. > :59:03.Johnson alongside former world number one Adam Scott and the sweet,

:59:04. > :59:09.Henrik Stenson. They have come so close in the open before. Zach

:59:10. > :59:15.Johnson was reluctant to hand back the Claret Jug but he has made a

:59:16. > :59:19.positive start in his bid to retain the trophy. That is a birdie putt at

:59:20. > :59:25.the 1st. Phil Mickelson has picked up a shot at the 2nd. Another chance

:59:26. > :59:30.at the 4th. Taking the scenic route. He hasn't won anything since is

:59:31. > :59:34.Murphy Triumph two years ago. Whatever Ernie Els? He was stung

:59:35. > :59:39.into action after dropping a shot at the 2nd and has made two birdies

:59:40. > :59:44.since then. His tee shot at the short fifth and that will set up a

:59:45. > :59:52.run of three in a row. The Big Easy, 2-under for his round now. Back to

:59:53. > :00:01.sack. Clearly love and cherish, the birthplace of the open, as much as

:00:02. > :00:03.he did St Andrews. And Billy Horschel, soberly dressed today. A

:00:04. > :00:19.birdie putt. He is how it looks. Patrick Reed

:00:20. > :00:23.still unchallenged. There is now a 3-way tie. It is Thomas Stricker and

:00:24. > :00:29.Horschel on 4-under and those making the best progress include the likes

:00:30. > :00:31.of Richard Sterne E, 3-under 217 and Justin Leonard, the man who won here

:00:32. > :00:43.in 1997, also 3-under 39. COMMENTATOR: Looking down on Royal

:00:44. > :00:54.Troon, the delightful town of Troon itself, with its harbour. Wonderful

:00:55. > :00:59.stretches of beach. Tidy little turning. Wonderful golf from Zach

:01:00. > :01:01.Johnson. Cracking on well, the defending champion hitting one away.

:01:02. > :01:16.Slightly anxious. No need. Came in nicely, well done. Nice

:01:17. > :01:50.start from Mickelson. Finau from America, his birdie putt

:01:51. > :02:05.on the 13th. Could be. It is, too. Went in nicely. 3-under. No dropped

:02:06. > :02:07.shots at all. Zach Johnson, who has made a wonderful start to his

:02:08. > :02:16.opening round. The defending champion. He needs a bit more club

:02:17. > :02:21.to reach the green. Very straight, not the greatest of hitters. Is it

:02:22. > :02:30.straight enough, bouncing enough? It certainly is. That's the way you do

:02:31. > :02:45.it, scuffling along and getting it on the green. Sergio Garcia. Second

:02:46. > :02:49.hole, second shot. I detect a grey or two in his beard, over the years,

:02:50. > :02:55.but the shots remain startling. This is for birdie. It looks good

:02:56. > :03:17.and it is good. A couple under already, Zach

:03:18. > :03:27.Johnson. This is on the fourth, this is a chance for the eagle three.

:03:28. > :03:39.Back at the bunker. Just misjudging the pace up the slope before it ran

:03:40. > :03:45.down. Ernie Els, who has his putting problems but this is for a birdie.

:03:46. > :03:51.He didn't hit it, did he? Well done, Ernie. As long as it disappears,

:03:52. > :04:00.it's good. Another birdie, four birdies but that five and six, just

:04:01. > :04:04.to keep him honest. Always looks sometimes he has his hands behind

:04:05. > :04:08.the ball but he's very efficient at putting and he has been for some

:04:09. > :04:13.time. His third birdie of the day after four holes. The defending

:04:14. > :04:24.champion, after winning at St Andrews. Garcia for a birdie. Yes,

:04:25. > :04:30.well done. Could it be his year? It might be his year. It all depends if

:04:31. > :04:35.he can knock in a fuse putts. Westwood, for birdie. On seven. -- a

:04:36. > :05:01.few putts. Well done. Reaching the Postage Stamp. He loves

:05:02. > :05:06.a challenge. 124. Does he like it? He likes it, that's a crackerjack

:05:07. > :05:23.shot. What a beauty. Delightful shot.

:05:24. > :05:36.Ooh! Can you believe it? Can you believe it? Awkward little shot down

:05:37. > :05:43.the slope. Delightful tee shot on the eighth hole, and spinning back.

:05:44. > :05:53.Down the line very nicely, very steady. How's that for a

:05:54. > :06:05.good-looking card? Dustin Johnson, now. The US Open champion. He holds

:06:06. > :06:17.it -- holes it. A birdie, which was needed.

:06:18. > :06:28.Justin Leonard, for birdie, going along very nicely. He's certainly

:06:29. > :06:37.remembered how to putt. Look at that. Lovely card, out in 33,

:06:38. > :06:42.starting home, nothing to it! STUDIO: Looking the south tip of the

:06:43. > :06:48.island, there the leaderboard. Justin Leonard, would you believe

:06:49. > :06:53.it, 1997 his year, he had an immaculate display of putting on the

:06:54. > :06:56.final day with a closing 65 to beat Jesper Parnevik and Darren Clarke

:06:57. > :07:02.and here he is again, on the leaderboard. Phil Mickelson also

:07:03. > :07:07.rolling back the years, three years in fact to Muirfield when he won his

:07:08. > :07:14.only Open title. He hasn't won any event anywhere since then.

:07:15. > :07:21.COMMENTATOR: Stenson, second shot on this big, big par-5. He hit it well,

:07:22. > :07:28.a towering shot. Has he got it online? Going at the heart, it's a

:07:29. > :07:30.majestic shot. Absolutely sparkling shot, to the heart of the green.

:07:31. > :07:49.Chance for an eagle. Johnson, much better angle, he can

:07:50. > :07:58.see the flag. That's fantastic. What a great shot. After that wonderful

:07:59. > :08:11.second shot of Stenson, this putt 43. -- for three. Eagle three. What

:08:12. > :08:20.they putt. What a man. -- a putt. Beautiful shots.

:08:21. > :08:30.Birdie at the 6th and the seventh, Johnson is 1-under par. Looking back

:08:31. > :08:34.to the eighth tee, this is one of the great holes in golf and Ken has

:08:35. > :08:41.been looking and he will tell us all about it.

:08:42. > :08:47.Back on the hill is the eighth tee, the Postage Stamp, one of the most

:08:48. > :08:52.famous holes here on the golf course. Very small putting surface,

:08:53. > :08:57.15 yards by eight yards. I've marked out where the pin positions may be,

:08:58. > :09:02.the four positions. Let's have a look at this one. So little margin

:09:03. > :09:07.for error, if you have a wedge you can have a go but if you get it

:09:08. > :09:12.wrong, have a look at this, you go down there, no green to work with

:09:13. > :09:16.and a deep bunker. When you are on the tee with the wedge, the

:09:17. > :09:20.percentage play, which is difficult, to try to hit the centre of the

:09:21. > :09:29.green on this towel. From there, look how far you are from the flag.

:09:30. > :09:32.Over there, ten feet, 15 feet here and about ten feet. The longest putt

:09:33. > :09:36.is to the pin at the back of the green which is only 20 feet away

:09:37. > :09:41.which isn't too bad, and it's uphill. When you are going for this

:09:42. > :09:46.green, the Postage Stamp, play for the centre of it, don't chase the

:09:47. > :09:54.flag, or you can be in a lot of trouble. Ken Brown, he knows a thing

:09:55. > :10:01.or two. Kaymer on the eighth hole, can he follow his advice? Watch his

:10:02. > :10:14.reaction. He looks to be happy. So happy! So happy! Good shot. How is

:10:15. > :10:29.Mickelson's touch? Birdie chance on number nine. A little bit slow.

:10:30. > :10:35.Winning at Muirfield, looking back on his career, he may say that is

:10:36. > :10:39.his best, perhaps winning at the Masters. I think he thought he would

:10:40. > :10:53.master links golf, but how about that, 32. Justin Leonard. A winner

:10:54. > :11:02.here. A few years ago. It is doing its best for him. Remembering old

:11:03. > :11:08.times. Just kissing the balls. He wasn't old enough to shave last time

:11:09. > :11:12.he was here, look at him now. Phil has got one of his fairway woods. He

:11:13. > :11:31.likes it. Very nice, he has a decent flag lie

:11:32. > :11:37.as well. -- flat. This reminds me of the putt that Leonard made in the

:11:38. > :11:41.Ryder Cup, smashing it into the hole from about this range and everyone

:11:42. > :11:46.galloped onto the green. Not this time but it's a good putt from such

:11:47. > :11:54.long-range doorstep thank you for reminding me of that, Peter! Those

:11:55. > :12:04.were the days! 124 yards to the flag. Here is Zach.

:12:05. > :12:30.Phil Mickelson for a birdie. He is 4-under and playing quite

:12:31. > :12:37.beautifully. This is the 10th. The greens are in magnificent condition.

:12:38. > :12:44.One of the worlds best. It's hardly surprising. Par, birdie, par,

:12:45. > :12:55.birdie, par, birdie, very rhythmical. The Bay. If only the sun

:12:56. > :13:04.shone more. Up to the 18th hole. Finau, 3-under. Par for a 68. That

:13:05. > :13:17.could well be three. Zach Johnson. Beautiful two for him.

:13:18. > :13:37.He moves to 4-under par. Finau on 18, after that delightful

:13:38. > :13:44.second shot. This is to go to 4-under par. And he makes it look

:13:45. > :13:52.very easy, 67. Very nice playing in deed. -- indeed.

:13:53. > :14:02.Now, Mickelson on 11. A long iron, up towards the green. The wall on

:14:03. > :14:10.the right. I don't think he quite got it. Pretty good, two putts from

:14:11. > :14:17.Mickelson, pretty easy prospect. Johnson's second.

:14:18. > :14:26.A style very much of his own. It looks on line. Yes, a good one

:14:27. > :14:31.again. He's a very confident player, in a similar mould to Luke Donald a

:14:32. > :14:37.years ago. Down the fairway, not especially long, a good short game,

:14:38. > :14:40.a good head on his shoulders. Martin Kaymer, the first of this threesome

:14:41. > :14:49.to play the second shot into the 10th green.

:14:50. > :15:08.Now, Zach Johnson for birdie to join the leaders on 5-under. Ooh, so

:15:09. > :15:23.near. He remains 4-under par. You almost feel that you can jump up

:15:24. > :15:49.and touch it. Absolutely amazing. Mickelson for par on the 11th, to

:15:50. > :15:56.stay 5-under. No bother. He's had a fantastic front nine and now we have

:15:57. > :16:00.hazel. STUDIO: 19 years since Phil Mickelson first played Royal Troon

:16:01. > :16:03.in anger. He knows his way around. This opening birdie for the

:16:04. > :16:08.five-time major winner on the second. The next one would follow at

:16:09. > :16:16.the 1st of the par-5 holes, the fourth. The Californian's birdie

:16:17. > :16:26.putt on the sixth took advantage of another par-5. The is 3-under and

:16:27. > :16:33.this is a beauty. The tee shot on the Postage Stamp, 420 square yards

:16:34. > :16:39.of green to work with and that's enough for Phil, hardly a puff of

:16:40. > :16:47.breeze now. A birdie, Mickelson firmly on a roll. And his putter was

:16:48. > :16:51.in action on the difficult 10th, this is one of only six birdies

:16:52. > :16:54.there to date and the Muirfield champion goes into a tie with his

:16:55. > :17:00.Ryder Cup team-mate Patrick Reed on 5-under. We saw signs of it last

:17:01. > :17:06.week in Castle Stuart and it looks like he may be onto something. So,

:17:07. > :17:11.the thrill returns. The co-leader with Patrick Reed and the red, white

:17:12. > :17:16.and blue of the US really dominating the opening day. Nicholson, one of

:17:17. > :17:21.seven Americans on the front page. Tony Finau, the winner of the Puerto

:17:22. > :17:25.Rico open, making quite a impression on his debut, not a single bogey in

:17:26. > :17:32.his round of 67. What did you expect with your first open here at Troon?

:17:33. > :17:39.-- Open. I am used to traditional golf courses, a lot of trees. I

:17:40. > :17:43.definitely got what I expected, ailing style golf course and I'm

:17:44. > :17:50.happy with how I started. -- a links style. COMMENTATOR:. Kaymer, after a

:17:51. > :17:59.good start this is to go 4-under par.

:18:00. > :18:05.He's got his putting boots on, looking very good indeed, smooth,

:18:06. > :18:25.unruffled, unhurried. 4-under par. Second shot on the 12th, for

:18:26. > :18:30.Mickelson. Hitting a little bit right of the flag. No risks. A lot

:18:31. > :18:42.of players have gone in the gully. JB Holmes. The Ryder Cup player. We

:18:43. > :19:06.under par. -- 3-under par. Mickelson, to get to 6-under. He has

:19:07. > :19:14.misled that. He will get the par under his belt -- he miss read it.

:19:15. > :19:28.With this wind, every hole is a birdie hole.

:19:29. > :19:48.Justin Leonard. Birdie putt on the 16th. He's done it again. Could he

:19:49. > :19:54.win again? Dustin Johnson. 1-under, second shot to the 11th. He's hit a

:19:55. > :19:57.majestic drive. Steady, it's all right. Dustin Johnson certainly

:19:58. > :20:03.arrived here at Troon in good form. two perfect shots, a tentative putt,

:20:04. > :20:48.this is for par on 11. Mickelson. His second shot. He's

:20:49. > :20:58.played... A nice little bounce onto the green.

:20:59. > :21:06.Just about see the flag here on the ninth hole, Garcia.

:21:07. > :21:19.Totally changed this green. What they shot from Garcia. Beautiful, he

:21:20. > :21:24.really is a joy to watch from tee to green -- what a shot. Mickelson has

:21:25. > :21:32.left himself this sizeable putt. Giving it the full stretch to the

:21:33. > :21:51.flag. That's not too bad. Patrick Reed finished a long time

:21:52. > :22:01.ago, 66. Mickelson, six left to play. Americans at Royal Troon. In

:22:02. > :22:08.control. A bit further down, it becomes a more international

:22:09. > :22:09.leaderboard. Good to see Jamie Donaldson, who has had his

:22:10. > :22:14.struggles. Now, Stenson, his third to 11. In

:22:15. > :22:39.the tangled stuff. What a shot. Wonderful second shot from Garcia,

:22:40. > :22:47.this is for his birdie. And he's out in 34. In these conditions, there

:22:48. > :22:54.are birdies to be had, even on the tough back nine. Write in there.

:22:55. > :23:05.A wayward drive and second but a great pitch, Stenson. Can he make a

:23:06. > :23:09.great four at the 11th? One eagle and all pars so far. This is to stay

:23:10. > :23:29.2-under. No. Mickelson has reached the 14th, the

:23:30. > :23:42.joint leader with Patrick Reed. The pin is just on the front left

:23:43. > :23:50.corner. Nice result. Very narrow entry to this green. Andy Sullivan.

:23:51. > :23:54.This is to get to three. Beautifully done, Sullivan. He's coming back to

:23:55. > :24:14.form in recent weeks. 3-under. Really is Dead Calm out here now.

:24:15. > :24:23.Mickelson, for his two on 14. A conventional grip for this length.

:24:24. > :24:30.Sort of a reverse. What a beauty! Well, absolutely great. Going to the

:24:31. > :24:39.top of the leaderboard, -6. A former champion is on the war path. Look at

:24:40. > :24:53.the card, superb, no bogeys, six birdies. Smiling. Justin Leonard. He

:24:54. > :24:59.used to roll these in for fun in his pomp. That's a shame, it was going

:25:00. > :25:08.so well. But it's a birdie to finish for Justin Leonard. Playing in the

:25:09. > :25:11.former champions's group. STUDIO: Phil Mickelson, one shot clear of

:25:12. > :25:15.Patrick Reed. Mickelson missed the cut in the first two Majors of the

:25:16. > :25:17.year, making up for it here at Troon.

:25:18. > :25:30.COMMENTATOR: Stenson on 12, 150, to the pin.

:25:31. > :25:41.Immensely long. Playing to the middle of the green. You can see

:25:42. > :25:53.Johnson's ball in the bunker there. Soren Kjeldsen on the final hole.

:25:54. > :26:09.Tiger leader. -- tidy. A birdie 467. Stenson's birdie attempt on 12.

:26:10. > :26:17.Got to go. Yeah. Well done, third birdie of the day, birdie and an

:26:18. > :26:31.eagle on sixth. Russell Knox. 3-over after three, so

:26:32. > :26:42.he's trying to get back to level par. The middle of the 13th fairway.

:26:43. > :26:55.That's a fine shot. Come on. The leading European on the US money

:26:56. > :27:00.list. Now, Nielsen, chance for 67 -- Kjeldsen. Yes, indeed, two birdies

:27:01. > :27:07.in the last three holes for the Dane. What a start here. Not a great

:27:08. > :27:17.relationship with the Open Championship. We talked about

:27:18. > :27:23.Russell Knox trying to get back from his par double bogey bogey start,

:27:24. > :27:30.3-over. A couple of birdies, this is to go back level.

:27:31. > :27:42.What a free that is on 13. Laser-like second shot from him. He

:27:43. > :27:49.is recovering well now. An ugly start.

:27:50. > :27:59.Championship leader, Phil Mickelson, this is to stay 6-under. Solid par

:28:00. > :28:09.on the difficult 15th. The par-5 to come. Some wind turbines about to

:28:10. > :28:12.head out into the Firth at some point. Ken Brown has been looking at

:28:13. > :28:23.the 16th. The 16th is the last par-5, it is

:28:24. > :28:28.basically a straight hole. These fairways are fairly generous, quite

:28:29. > :28:32.flat and that there is a little gully ditch running over the fairway

:28:33. > :28:35.that you must contend with. Second shot, you must decide whether to

:28:36. > :28:40.reach the green in two otherwise you are going to lay up. Bunkers around

:28:41. > :28:44.the green, it is a birdie opportunity but the key factor on

:28:45. > :28:51.this whole, this little ditch running across the fairway. -- on

:28:52. > :28:55.this hole. 235 yards to reach it. Generally this hole plays into the

:28:56. > :29:00.breeze, so sometimes they might be able to clear it but you have to lay

:29:01. > :29:06.up short, nine times out of ten. You have to land a reasonable distance

:29:07. > :29:12.short of it. You have to hit your tee-shot about 285 and then you have

:29:13. > :29:16.the best part of 250 yards so probably a couple of 3-woods. Is

:29:17. > :29:22.anybody going to take on the ditch? We'll have to see. Is the last

:29:23. > :29:30.chance really of an easy birdie, so you have to attack, that's for

:29:31. > :29:37.certain. Mickelson, 290 two the gully. The wind is from the south.

:29:38. > :29:39.They will be crashing at this with drivers. You can still get home from

:29:40. > :29:50.there. Kaymer, Taoiseach on the 14th, a

:29:51. > :29:58.very narrow entrance to the green -- tee shot. Absolutely dead still, the

:29:59. > :30:01.wind has dropped away. Kaymer is going at it. Lovely birdie

:30:02. > :30:23.opportunity to follow. It is a long way back just to be

:30:24. > :30:40.sure. Bunkers to the left and the right. Down into the front right. A

:30:41. > :30:55.lovely tee shot from Martin Kaymer. This would move him to minus five.

:30:56. > :31:25.Yes, cried someone, no set the ball. Going along very steadily. To

:31:26. > :31:39.Stenson. Dear oh dear. Missed putts coming thick and fast. Stenson slips

:31:40. > :31:51.back to one. Now, westward. -- westward. Go on. In it goes. Just

:31:52. > :32:07.about. Wrestle the pain away and it will drop. Let's have another look

:32:08. > :32:19.at this. An eagle. That left him back up to level par. Mickelson

:32:20. > :32:23.trying to emulate Westwood. He has given it an almighty thump. That is

:32:24. > :32:37.beautifully played. Not easy to get that distance.

:32:38. > :32:50.These are easy targets for someone like Zach Johnson. I fully expect

:32:51. > :33:03.this within 12 feet of the pin. You are right, you are wise. He loved

:33:04. > :33:14.that. Too good tee shot in so far. Louis Oosthuizen with a hole-in-one

:33:15. > :33:25.earlier. I am still reeling from the short missed out on the last. They

:33:26. > :33:33.are surrounding the pain. For birdie, Mickelson. This would get

:33:34. > :33:43.him to 7-under. Oh yes. Beautiful. 7-under. He is opening a little bit

:33:44. > :33:51.of space between him and the field. Great play from Phil Mickelson. At

:33:52. > :33:55.46 years of age, Phil Mickelson could be on for his lowest round of

:33:56. > :33:59.golf ever in an Open Championship. Two shots ahead of Patrick Reed and

:34:00. > :34:05.only for counting events left until the Ryder Cup teams are settled, ate

:34:06. > :34:12.lots of red, white and blue on the leaderboard. Not many Europeans.

:34:13. > :34:20.Soren Kjeldsen, a real resurgence in his form since he won the Irish Open

:34:21. > :34:27.last year. 4-under for the first day. You must be delighted. I played

:34:28. > :34:31.really well and conditions were better than I thought they would be

:34:32. > :34:38.so it was a nice combination of some good shotmaking, some good putts and

:34:39. > :34:47.great conditions. A steady tee shot for Stenson at this 167 yard 14th.

:34:48. > :34:53.It would be good to get a pop in here. Beautifully done by Stenson.

:34:54. > :35:05.Moved back to 2-under. Mickelson, it one of the club and

:35:06. > :35:26.the steps to this long par-3. Another beautiful shot from

:35:27. > :35:41.Mickelson. A chance to get to get under. 63 might be on the cards.

:35:42. > :35:49.Zach Johnson for his two on the 14th. A positive stroke, right in

:35:50. > :35:54.the middle. Zach Johnson continues this wonderful opening round in

:35:55. > :36:04.defence of his title. Five birdies, no drop shots, two behind Mickelson.

:36:05. > :36:09.You think of all the 63 's Majors that have been done by numerous

:36:10. > :36:14.people. Nick Price, Greg Norman, Johnny Miller, and humour. Nobody

:36:15. > :36:25.has shot 62. That is still a tall order for Mickelson.

:36:26. > :36:41.Fingers crossed he will beat that today. This is to move to minus

:36:42. > :36:50.eight. He did it. -8 for Mickelson. He has a chance at the last. 340 62.

:36:51. > :37:03.That would be some round. Never been done in Majors. They are all nodding

:37:04. > :37:10.approval. Mickelson is in heaven. Let's see if Garcia can find another

:37:11. > :37:13.birdie. He hasn't. Garcia goes to two. A popular band, as you can

:37:14. > :37:34.hear. -- he has it. Let's hit the 3-wood. I am not

:37:35. > :37:44.feeling as much wind as I expected it to. It is 267 to the start of the

:37:45. > :38:00.bunkers on the left. 312 to the bunker on the right. He is heading

:38:01. > :38:06.toward the bunkers on the left. Lucky, lucky. He will need a bit of

:38:07. > :38:16.that. Take to get to the front left in from there. Par is the likely

:38:17. > :38:29.result now. Andy Sullivan. This too birdie at 16 and get to minus three.

:38:30. > :38:44.Well done. Putting the ship back on course after a bogey at 15.

:38:45. > :39:00.Does he chase this flag? He just held onto it a fraction. Does he

:39:01. > :39:05.chase the flag? Of course he does. That for a 60 to come. Mickelson

:39:06. > :39:13.providing all the drama league in day here. He is unfortunate to stick

:39:14. > :39:19.there and come up short but he is very good at this distance, Zach

:39:20. > :39:30.Johnson. Just a little bit of chat. But for his par. The last time he

:39:31. > :39:33.walked up this hill in competitive golf, Mickelson thought he was in

:39:34. > :39:38.with a chance of winning. He finished a shot behind the man on

:39:39. > :39:42.his right. He played too conservatively then. None of that

:39:43. > :39:56.today. What a round he has played today. Zach Johnson. Save par on 15.

:39:57. > :40:05.He has parted very, very well. Three behind Mickelson now. There have

:40:06. > :40:20.been no fewer than 27 rounds of 63, this, for Mickelson, 462. -- for 62.

:40:21. > :40:34.He will know exactly what this part is for. He will know what it means.

:40:35. > :40:51.It is good. Go now. No. You cannot, you cannot leave it there. Maybe

:40:52. > :40:56.just an inch. An inch from history. Not to be for Phil Mickelson, but a

:40:57. > :41:02.very special round of golf. What a way to start his challenge for this

:41:03. > :41:09.Open Championship. 62 survives on touched. 63 for Mickelson. He is as

:41:10. > :41:18.staggered for the rest of this. What a round of golf. The course record

:41:19. > :41:22.at Troon, so close, so close. It was the 1973 Troon open champion who

:41:23. > :41:28.once said shooting a 62 in a major is like the four minute mile in

:41:29. > :41:34.golf. That was the equivalent of a nanosecond away. What a round, what

:41:35. > :41:47.the start. Feel the thrill is well named. Three shots in front. So, to

:41:48. > :41:56.Russell knocks. One overpower. Very nicely done. Noise all over the

:41:57. > :42:05.course now. He moves with a huge leap in red figures. He was 3-over

:42:06. > :42:09.after three holes. Kaymer. A chance to get to 5-under. Good scoring

:42:10. > :42:15.toward the end of the day. Beautifully done. Three behind

:42:16. > :42:29.Mickelson but it is a tie for second pace. That is a tidy, can shot. Five

:42:30. > :42:46.birdies and 11 pars. Sullivan at 18. Drawing one in. What a good shot.

:42:47. > :42:53.Chance of a 67 for Sullivan. This kind of shot is his speciality, Zach

:42:54. > :43:02.Johnson. Grid control with a wedge. Right at the flag. Johnson nearly

:43:03. > :43:08.did the same as Russell Knox. Short putt for the birdie to come. Andy

:43:09. > :43:17.Sullivan, can he close with the birdie? Oh, he can. Pours it into

:43:18. > :43:45.the middle. A fine round from Andy Sullivan. Garcia for birdie. Yes.

:43:46. > :43:55.Well done. 3-under now. To get to 6-under, Zach Johnson. A beauty for

:43:56. > :44:01.Johnson. 6-under. Birdie, birdie finish to pay with Mickelson. Phil

:44:02. > :44:06.Mickelson still trying to dig in the enormity of that mess at the last.

:44:07. > :44:12.Could have been a 62. He will settle for a 60 day. It is the New Course

:44:13. > :44:17.record at Troon. I wonder what his reflections on that extraordinary

:44:18. > :44:23.Brown will be. Where does that record equalling 63 stand on the

:44:24. > :44:27.list of great career rounds for you? It was a great round but I had great

:44:28. > :44:32.conditions. The final round at Muirfield will always be my best

:44:33. > :44:36.round of my career, but this was a tremendous round. I had a chance to

:44:37. > :44:40.do something historical and I am heartbroken it didn't go in. I know

:44:41. > :44:48.it was right in the centre and it just didn't go. Did you think it was

:44:49. > :44:53.going in? It started on line and they had solid, I hit it with the

:44:54. > :44:58.right pace. I thought I Reed it right. I knew it was in with the

:44:59. > :45:04.food to go, I felt a surge of the javelin that I just sort -- shot 62

:45:05. > :45:15.and then I felt the disappointment of not shooting the 62. It was for

:45:16. > :45:24.pricking. Zach Johnson Tom Grabham -- it was heartbreaking. All sorts

:45:25. > :45:29.of trouble down there. He is wide. Stay there. Stay there. It hasn't

:45:30. > :45:40.finished. It has finished now. Could be an awkward stance. In a

:45:41. > :45:44.leaderboard dominated by Americans the German Martin Kaymer stands out.

:45:45. > :45:55.No bogeys on his card today, five birdies. This for another. Very good

:45:56. > :46:05.effort from Kaymer. They are right to groan. Johnson after the

:46:06. > :46:26.lacklustre tee shot, to say the least. Played it nicely. A defeat

:46:27. > :46:30.left for his par. -- eight feet. No good for Russell knocks. That will

:46:31. > :46:36.be a double bogey on the 17th after doing so well to get back up to

:46:37. > :46:41.subpar figures. Slips back. Not a great day for British golfers. The

:46:42. > :46:48.best of them is well-placed. Andy Sullivan four an apartment in the

:46:49. > :46:53.clubhouse. Massively pleased. Always nice to get off to a good start in

:46:54. > :46:57.an Open Championship. The scoring was favourable. Conditions were

:46:58. > :47:01.quite benign so it felt like if I did not take advantage of it I would

:47:02. > :47:21.had grief coming in. A solid start, even though it looks average now. To

:47:22. > :47:33.save par, Johnson. An awkward one for Kaymer. Standing above the ball.

:47:34. > :48:05.It has not been a great round. He had a birdie on the 13th. A bit of

:48:06. > :48:12.drama here on the 16th. I am sure he will celebrate in some

:48:13. > :48:30.non-flamboyant way. This 465 for Kaymer. He has played well. -- this

:48:31. > :48:34.for 65. That is not his best part. A little tap in, a round of 66, a

:48:35. > :48:38.great start to this Open Championship. His lowest ever round

:48:39. > :49:01.in and open. Three behind Mickelson. Bradley for birdie. Oh yes. We have

:49:02. > :49:12.seen a mix of pubs from Keegan Bradley. A misplaced drive right up

:49:13. > :49:25.against the face of the bumper. Third shot now for Zach Johnson.

:49:26. > :49:34.Near enough. Just died on the front of the green. Still a great chance

:49:35. > :49:41.to save par and remain 5-under. Can Garcia find the birdie on this par

:49:42. > :49:46.five which has given up so many? He can indeed. Garcia moves to 4-under

:49:47. > :49:58.par. Closing well. Finishing strongly. The support is still with

:49:59. > :50:05.them. Six birdies in the first 16 homes for Zach Johnson. No bogeys.

:50:06. > :50:12.Everything was going swimmingly. Another bad tee shot here. Hacked

:50:13. > :50:26.out of the bunker sideways. This, for a round of 66. No one likes to

:50:27. > :50:34.finish with two bogeys. Surely not. Well, he will be disappointed. 67

:50:35. > :50:44.for the day is a good round of golf. Just not quite the one he was hoping

:50:45. > :50:59.for. He has got basically joined Garcia at minus four.

:51:00. > :51:03.Right out the bottom of that leaderboard you will see the name

:51:04. > :51:10.Zach Johnson, disappointing finish from his point of view. Bogey, bogey

:51:11. > :51:15.at 17 and 18. Some happy sitting for a sack. It was Bobby Locke of South

:51:16. > :51:18.Africa and Arnold Palmer who retained their open titles rated at

:51:19. > :51:24.Troon. It has been done before and he can do it. Before I talk about

:51:25. > :51:30.your round, how did it feel to be welcomed back as the champion? Very

:51:31. > :51:39.nice, very warm, welcoming. Lots of nice embraces and applause. From the

:51:40. > :51:44.RNA and the fans. It is nice to come back to a tournament you respect but

:51:45. > :51:52.that you love. It is not always nice giving a trophy back but the last 12

:51:53. > :51:55.months or so has been fantastic. You did a good job for the majority of

:51:56. > :52:02.the round. It would suggest you didn't want to give the trophy back.

:52:03. > :52:06.It was a solid day. A level of quality shots, opportunities out

:52:07. > :52:11.there. A couple of nice recoveries and a couple of Arendt shot at the

:52:12. > :52:17.end. I paid the price, as you should. It will by you hear if you

:52:18. > :52:19.are not on your game. Unfortunate but with more positives than

:52:20. > :52:27.negatives and I will continue tomorrow. Let's dig a breath. Phil

:52:28. > :52:32.Mickelson is three shots ahead of the field. Patrick Reed and Martin

:52:33. > :52:38.Kaymer, the top European in hot pursuit. Then comes the group in

:52:39. > :52:44.fourth, all tied at 4-under par and it includes the top Briton, Andy

:52:45. > :52:47.Sullivan of England. It also includes the defending champion,

:52:48. > :52:53.Zach Johnson. Justin Rose looms large at 3-under. Also in that

:52:54. > :52:56.group, Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia. We have been following the

:52:57. > :53:00.fortunes of some of the biggest names in the game and they find

:53:01. > :53:05.themselves a long way back at the moment. If you have been following

:53:06. > :53:11.Rory McIlroy, he is there at 2-under with Rickie Fowler, so to Adam

:53:12. > :53:15.Scott. Colin Montgomerie hit the opening shot. Level par from Jordan

:53:16. > :53:22.Spieth, Willett, Johnson and the world number one, Jason Day, a less

:53:23. > :53:32.than average day, ten shots and the back behind the leader. Like many,

:53:33. > :53:35.he was 4-under to the turn but it was pressing the accelerator on the

:53:36. > :53:41.back nine that separated him from the challengers. We got a break with

:53:42. > :53:47.the weather. The wind died a bit, changed direction, so this 10th and

:53:48. > :53:53.11th was very tricky. A couple of nice shots and he has been working

:53:54. > :53:59.on his 10th. This is delightful. The three at number ten was a real

:54:00. > :54:03.boost. That was one of the rarest birdies today. This is the 14th at

:54:04. > :54:09.the short par-3 and Mickelson seeing everything now. He played a cagey

:54:10. > :54:16.shot and another one of the find at the bottom of the cup. He is gaining

:54:17. > :54:22.confidence here. He has that look on his face where he is content. The

:54:23. > :54:28.16th and you would think he would be in a lot of trouble but he makes it

:54:29. > :54:33.look easy. It is a dangerous shot. It is difficult to get it out and

:54:34. > :54:40.move it 18 yards. That was another birdie opportunity. His seven of the

:54:41. > :54:45.day. He founded in and at 46 years of age, this gives them another

:54:46. > :54:50.crack at the birdie. He played aggressively. He was trying to work

:54:51. > :54:57.the ball in from right-to-left which he did delightfully. One of the best

:54:58. > :55:02.T-shirts today. Again, if he can nudge this one, there is something

:55:03. > :55:06.special on the horizon. He would walk to the eating knowing that he

:55:07. > :55:12.had a chance not just to equal a golfing history with a 63 but to

:55:13. > :55:16.write a whole new page at the 18th. Found the rough and played a good

:55:17. > :55:21.approach. How that stayed out, I will never, never know. He couldn't

:55:22. > :55:29.believe it. He had to be content with a 63. Just parked behind the

:55:30. > :55:35.cup. He had a part like that at Phoenix. This one seemed to become

:55:36. > :55:43.in nicely and just decided it wasn't going to go. He said he felt like he

:55:44. > :55:48.played the round of his life and he still felt like crying. He said at

:55:49. > :55:53.Castle Stuart he realised he had to do work on his like again and he had

:55:54. > :56:00.a huge session on Tuesday. That seems to have made a massive

:56:01. > :56:04.difference. There are a lot of parts taken from off the greens. He has

:56:05. > :56:10.honed himself. He always practices but his confidence has developed. It

:56:11. > :56:16.went from good to better and better. I thought he had shot the 62. He is

:56:17. > :56:26.looking to be the second oldest champion ever after Old Tom Morris

:56:27. > :56:32.in 1867 he was only two months old. Mickelson will feature in your shot

:56:33. > :56:38.of the day. First of all, the Oosthuizen had a special job at the

:56:39. > :56:46.14th. It was the par-3. 167 yards. That was more breeze about. With the

:56:47. > :56:50.wind of the left, it is awkward. He covered the flag all the way and in

:56:51. > :57:05.she went. Got back to level par. A special shot. Two aces after his

:57:06. > :57:09.performance at the Masters. This was a fantastic shot. He nudged it in

:57:10. > :57:17.low and it came off the Kosh and that was one of the shots of the

:57:18. > :57:23.day. Such a quality striker. Mickelson on the same hole. Another

:57:24. > :57:27.chance added to. He plays a similar sort of shot. A little higher, the

:57:28. > :57:36.wind has died down a fraction. Watch this one. He struck it so well. A

:57:37. > :57:48.lovely too. What is your shot of the day. This came at the 3rd. Bubba

:57:49. > :57:54.Watson, driver, a par for, 372 yards and he gives it this wallop. The

:57:55. > :58:05.pain is at the back of the green. Could you chase it on? It scripts

:58:06. > :58:11.passed the bunker, runs down the edge, it must be the best of 390

:58:12. > :58:18.yards. A bit special. Only Boboc could do that. He will be looking

:58:19. > :58:22.forward to tomorrow. The wind is due to switch around. Relentless rain as

:58:23. > :58:35.well. A beautiful summer 's day here in Scotland once again. Ken, it has

:58:36. > :58:41.been an eventful day. We have had a hole-in-one, a horror show at the

:58:42. > :58:45.11th and a very low number indeed. A history equalling number. It might

:58:46. > :58:49.have broken the record but the day belongs to Phil Mickelson. It is

:58:50. > :59:00.fair to say he has mastered Royal Troon today. Good night.
