:01:16. > :01:23.For almost 90 years, golf's and Walker Cup has been introducing us

:01:23. > :01:29.to the golfing greats of tomorrow today. Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods,

:01:29. > :01:35.Kremer could tell, the list goes on and on. They all came to a

:01:35. > :01:39.retention in this, the foremost amateur team competition. It puts

:01:39. > :01:42.the United States of America against Great Britain and Ireland.

:01:42. > :01:47.It is a pretty sure bet that some of the young men we see this

:01:47. > :01:52.weekend will go on to become golfing greats. But all in good

:01:52. > :01:57.time and not before they have given their all in this the 43rd Walker

:01:57. > :02:02.Cup match. In the last decade or so, the matches have been pretty close

:02:02. > :02:10.and exciting fog will last part, but the last instalment was a

:02:10. > :02:14.runaway for the United States. Before the sides met in

:02:14. > :02:21.Pennsylvania, at the previous matches had been settled by a

:02:21. > :02:31.single point. Rickie Fowler played a key role in his last match as an

:02:31. > :02:36.amateur. And at last day singles victory by Peter Uihlein retained

:02:36. > :02:42.the cup for the United States. From there they the run-up an emphatic

:02:42. > :02:51.victory. This week, the US aiming to claim the Walker Cup for a 4th

:02:51. > :02:56.consecutive time. Yesterday evening, both sides were introduced by the

:02:56. > :03:03.respective captains. The anthems were played, formalities absurd,

:03:03. > :03:09.and we were ready to resume the oldest of rivalries in team golf.

:03:09. > :03:14.Ken Brown is a former five-times Ryder Cup player but this Walker

:03:14. > :03:18.Cup predates that. Why does it still matter in this day and age?

:03:18. > :03:23.He it is nice that amateur sport still has some sort of meaning, but

:03:23. > :03:28.it is such an important event to playing. It is the pinnacle of your

:03:28. > :03:33.golfing life as an amateur. If you can play in the Walker Cup you have

:03:33. > :03:40.ready made it and made it something special, and it is always on your

:03:40. > :03:46.CV. What does it mean far Saskia worse? It is like a Ryder Cup.

:03:46. > :03:53.There's nothing quite like to teams getting together, Match Play,

:03:53. > :03:58.foursomes and singles. The last two home matches had been marvellous.

:03:58. > :04:02.This is one of my favourite events to be at. It is a thrilling place.

:04:03. > :04:07.It is a place of real honesty and there is real honest endeavour from

:04:07. > :04:13.these young men. What about the boil Aberdeen links, a very testing

:04:13. > :04:18.course and a beautiful place to be -- will Royal Aberdeen. It is

:04:18. > :04:22.filled with tradition here. It is nine holes at eight and nine holes

:04:22. > :04:27.coming back into the breeze. It is in perfect condition so the boys

:04:27. > :04:33.will have a delightful venue to play it in. This is the calmest

:04:33. > :04:37.that it has been all day, right now. But there is a lot of weather

:04:37. > :04:41.coming in and how much of the leveller could that be? Could it

:04:41. > :04:45.play into the hands of the home team? I would think the American

:04:45. > :04:51.side overall a slightly stronger. But they have home advantage and

:04:51. > :04:55.the home crowd, so I think it is barely even over all. It will be,

:04:55. > :05:01.as always, the person or those crucial parts that will turn the

:05:01. > :05:11.match around. Let us explain the format. This is how it will be

:05:11. > :05:12.

:05:12. > :05:16.played. Today we have four matches Tomorrow, more foursomes in the

:05:16. > :05:22.morning and then all 10 players in each team involved in head to head

:05:22. > :05:30.singles. The US need to 13. To retain the Walker Cup and Great

:05:30. > :05:35.Britain and Ireland need 13.5. Let us introduce you to the teams. The

:05:35. > :05:45.home side is very young. All shapes and sizes and a real range of

:05:45. > :05:48.

:05:48. > :05:53.personalities. Stiggy Hodgson return from the 2019. Many that you

:05:53. > :06:03.will not have heard of but one that you should be aware of after his

:06:03. > :06:04.

:06:04. > :06:09.heroic in leading the Open at Royal It would have been silly to turn

:06:09. > :06:15.pro just a couple of months before this event, when I felt like I made

:06:15. > :06:19.that team after the Open. I struggled after the Open to get my

:06:19. > :06:29.concentration back. I had a lot of publicity in a way and it was good

:06:29. > :06:34.

:06:34. > :06:41.to let that pass and now my focus impressive group. They have six men

:06:42. > :06:48.in the top 10 of the world amateur rankings. Patrick Cantlay is the

:06:48. > :06:58.number one player and Peter Uihlein is one of the survivors of the 2009

:06:58. > :07:02.

:07:02. > :07:08.Playing the Majors, you are playing for yourself. In my case, I was

:07:08. > :07:12.representing my university in the States. But this is with nine guys

:07:12. > :07:16.you're not used to play with and also your country. It is a whole

:07:16. > :07:23.different feeling. Our open but last time my first tee shot was

:07:23. > :07:28.very nervous. Peter Uihlein and Tom Lewis are viewed as the natural

:07:28. > :07:33.leaders in both sides. For Tom Lewis, how much has his moment in

:07:33. > :07:37.the spotlight at royal St Georges prepared him for this? A great deal,

:07:37. > :07:44.I would say. Going into the Open Championship not a lot of people

:07:44. > :07:49.had heard of him. Locally, he was well known. Going their end

:07:49. > :07:53.shooting 65, to lowest round an amateur has ever scored in the Open

:07:53. > :07:59.Championship. He made the cut and finished 30th. It was a great week

:08:00. > :08:03.for him and will give him a lot of confidence. The Americans will lean

:08:04. > :08:07.heavily on Peter Uihlein. He is unbeaten in the Walker Cup. What

:08:07. > :08:12.could he go on to achieve in the game? It is difficult to say who is

:08:12. > :08:16.going to become a great one, who will be good and he will disappear.

:08:16. > :08:20.But to look at his record over the last three years and he is the best

:08:20. > :08:25.amateur in the world. He comes from a golfing background. I like the

:08:25. > :08:32.way he prepared for the Open Championship. He is well prepared,

:08:32. > :08:37.a professional amateur, as it were. Most of them are full-time amateurs.

:08:37. > :08:43.I remember Tom Watson same they were amateurs in name only. Gone

:08:43. > :08:47.are that days when the window- cleaner is going to give them a job.

:08:47. > :08:53.We have some wonderful systems over here in Great Britain and Ireland,

:08:53. > :08:58.developing young players, so most of them, the old school of the

:08:58. > :09:03.amateurs is dead and buried. These are semi-professionals. We will see

:09:03. > :09:08.a lot of them both this weekend and going forward. Let us meet the

:09:08. > :09:17.captains. For the United States, you have gym holed grief, a former

:09:17. > :09:23.Walker Cup player himself. -- Jim Holtgrieve. He is pitting his wits

:09:23. > :09:27.against Nigel Edwards. It is a game over 18 holes a where playing

:09:27. > :09:30.foursomes, we are playing at Royal Aberdeen, the boys know it very

:09:30. > :09:39.well. It looks as though the conditions will be similar to what

:09:39. > :09:43.we have played throughout the year. All the trophies and all the medals

:09:43. > :09:48.and all the accolades that everybody have got, it all goes

:09:48. > :09:58.away tomorrow when they walk over there and announced that there are

:09:58. > :09:58.

:09:58. > :10:52.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:10:52. > :10:57.At 9:00am today there were nerds, tension, excitement. Peter Uihlein

:10:58. > :11:04.hit the first shot in this Walker Cup contest. Tom Lewis went with a

:11:04. > :11:12.driver. A disconcerting start. Hooked it into a bush. That was not

:11:12. > :11:16.found. He and Michael Stewart lost the first hole. Consternation for

:11:16. > :11:26.the Great Britain and Ireland team straight away. They did get back

:11:26. > :11:41.

:11:41. > :11:50.into it. Senior and Solomon three Andrew Cotter and Peter Alliss.

:11:50. > :11:58.Windy conditions. Some brave soul going out to sea, looking for a

:11:58. > :12:07.lobster pot or tried to catch some crabs. -- trying. Look at this

:12:08. > :12:17.delightful golf course. It is in superb condition. His early days.

:12:17. > :12:24.First round. We will visit match one with Maureen Madill. We have

:12:24. > :12:34.been treated to some spectacular golf in this opening match. Tom

:12:34. > :12:39.

:12:39. > :12:47.Lewis and Michael Stewart hour one up. -- are. Only two par fives on

:12:47. > :12:56.this course. Probably a little bit out of reach. Looking for a

:12:56. > :13:03.replacement. I was on the first tee when Tom Lewis teed off. Drifted

:13:03. > :13:12.down the left-hand side. Lost it in the course. They have come fighting

:13:12. > :13:17.back, played some good steady golf. You will remember Tom Lewis from

:13:17. > :13:27.the Open Championship. Opening round of 65. Turning professional

:13:27. > :13:37.

:13:37. > :13:41.at the end of the week. He is going hope when he turns professional

:13:41. > :13:51.that he does not try to alter or too much. He is only a young fellow.

:13:51. > :13:53.

:13:53. > :13:59.He has got a good game. He just needs fine-tuning. Foursomes have

:13:59. > :14:05.always been very interesting. I had some great partners. Particularly

:14:05. > :14:15.Christy O'Connor, my old friend from Ireland. You have to play for

:14:15. > :14:16.

:14:16. > :14:23.your partner of relief. -- really. This is a risky second. Uihlein has

:14:23. > :14:28.pulled that a way. It was pretty much out of reach for him. The

:14:28. > :14:36.terrain is littered with bunkers. Lewis was always claimed short of

:14:36. > :14:46.those. I always -- I watched that ball and nobody moved. That could

:14:46. > :15:06.

:15:06. > :15:16.course. -- course. Foursomes, each two players has one ball in play

:15:16. > :15:18.

:15:18. > :15:28.and they take turns at tee shot. Nathan Smith. The oldest member of

:15:28. > :15:48.

:15:48. > :15:55.they can change very rapidly. So far it has been a curate's cake. --

:15:55. > :16:05.pate. A little bit of this, little bit of that. We have seen two balls

:16:05. > :16:15.

:16:15. > :16:21.lost of the first tee. Kelly Kraft lost his ball. Amazing. I like to

:16:21. > :16:25.see the crowd walking down the fairway. It is like the old days.

:16:25. > :16:35.It is all right when you only have a few hundred or a few 1000. When

:16:35. > :16:42.you get 20,000 or 30,000, it is very difficult. This is not a great

:16:42. > :16:52.lie. Michael Stewart has only got 90 yards. It is not the fattest

:16:52. > :16:56.

:16:56. > :17:02.green I have ever seen. He give it a good Digg. -- he struck it well.

:17:02. > :17:11.Excellent result. The Americans fired to the right. They do not

:17:11. > :17:16.seem to be in too much alarm. But they are still looking. It is

:17:16. > :17:25.horrid. They still have not found it. I am not actually convinced

:17:25. > :17:33.they have found this yet. It is totally thick down here. A rather

:17:33. > :17:37.risky shot that Uihlein took on. It was never going to make the green.

:17:37. > :17:42.It appeared on a few occasions as though they had found it. Then they

:17:42. > :17:52.started looking again. It always fascinates me when people stand

:17:52. > :17:57.

:17:57. > :18:07.around. It is obviously a popular place. I was fascinated to watch

:18:07. > :18:11.

:18:11. > :18:19.his second shot. Nobody waved their harm. This could be a lost ball.

:18:19. > :18:28.Match two. This is Jack Senior with the fourth

:18:29. > :18:34.shot for a Great Britain and Ireland. He drove out of bounds.

:18:34. > :18:44.has been in a rich vein of form. The semi-final of the US amateur

:18:44. > :18:49.

:18:50. > :18:55.Championship. A good player. news so far here. The search seems

:18:55. > :19:01.to be switching from inside to excite the rocks. Peter has been

:19:01. > :19:10.asked to identify a golf ball. I do not think the ball went out side

:19:10. > :19:20.the row. The stopwatches on them. I reckon it is about 3 a half-at this

:19:20. > :19:30.stage. -- three-and a-half minutes. They are finding a few balls. My

:19:30. > :19:38.

:19:38. > :19:48.goodness. Is it a Goblin?! That shot sounded a little porky. Good

:19:48. > :19:49.

:19:49. > :19:55.break. He did badly, got the run, put it close. This is matched three.

:19:55. > :20:05.-- match. Paul copter and Alan Dunbar. Nathan Smith and Blayne

:20:05. > :20:28.

:20:28. > :20:37.course that goes out. A little pitch and run here for Andy some of

:20:37. > :20:47.them. -- Andy Sullivan. He has played nicely so far today. A

:20:47. > :20:59.

:20:59. > :21:06.couple of errant shots at nine and They are having to recreate the

:21:07. > :21:11.original live. So many people stamped around him here. They are

:21:11. > :21:21.look happy with that now. This will be a difficult task facing Harris

:21:21. > :21:30.

:21:30. > :21:35.English. Lucky, lucky, lucky to the players reached the ball. There

:21:35. > :21:45.were quite a few people hunting around before they arrive. This is

:21:45. > :21:50.smash it as hard as you can and hope for the best. Yes, I agree.

:21:50. > :21:57.This is hit and hope. There are a couple of bunkers between him and

:21:57. > :22:06.the safety of the fairway. This is brute strength. There is no way

:22:06. > :22:15.that you can exert an lee macro control of the ball. -- any. That

:22:16. > :22:25.came out well. Hit and hope, and the hope came off. A massive break.

:22:26. > :22:25.

:22:26. > :22:35.A sigh of relief from the American camp. Some fierce rough around this

:22:36. > :22:39.

:22:39. > :22:42.course. On to the 11th. The 10th was conceded to the Americans. One

:22:42. > :22:52.up he beat Great Britain and Ireland team. It will be Kelly

:22:52. > :23:07.

:23:07. > :23:15.Kraft to hit the tee shot for the 167 yards. Looks very benign. That

:23:16. > :23:24.green is not as flat as it looks. And out of bounds fence on the

:23:24. > :23:34.right. Nice looking hole. Gentleman King. Tricky when you get to the

:23:34. > :23:41.

:23:41. > :23:47.Kelly Kraft has got a 5-iron. The pin on the left-hand side. At the

:23:47. > :23:51.green. He has to control the flight of the ball. The third hole they

:23:51. > :24:01.have played into the wind this morning. The wind is off to the

:24:01. > :24:02.

:24:02. > :24:08.left. That has stopped nicely for him. A long way from the hole.

:24:08. > :24:15.Almost in the three-putt range. It is not easy to get near that flag

:24:15. > :24:25.today. To get close to the flag you have to be bold and have a good

:24:25. > :24:52.

:24:52. > :25:02.or not, the Americans have this for the hole. This would be the most

:25:02. > :25:17.

:25:17. > :25:24.outrageous birdie. Uihlein has about golf. They nearly lost the

:25:24. > :25:32.ball. Eventually it was fined. Smashed it out and had a chance of

:25:32. > :25:39.winning the hole. GB and Ireland have still got to get the job done.

:25:39. > :25:45.By holing out has been very good in this match. Great support here for

:25:45. > :25:55.Michael Stewart, one of the home players. James Byrne is the other

:25:55. > :26:11.

:26:11. > :26:21.Scottish player in the team. Safely more. With a little bit better

:26:21. > :26:31.whether I am sure they would come in their hundreds and hundreds. --

:26:31. > :26:38.

:26:38. > :26:48.how much momentum can sway backwards and forwards so quickly -

:26:48. > :26:58.

:26:58. > :27:08.shots that win, it is the bad shots that lose. Anyone that can hole out

:27:08. > :27:29.

:27:29. > :27:33.is a damn good player to have Russell Henley. Once it reaches the

:27:33. > :27:43.top level of the green it will break from right to left and run

:27:43. > :27:57.

:27:57. > :28:01.away from him. Very tricky to judge flag-raising ceremony it was nice

:28:01. > :28:08.to see many of the old past players here from both United States and

:28:08. > :28:18.Great Britain and Ireland. The passing of time has been quite kind

:28:18. > :28:26.

:28:26. > :28:36.to some. Newly directly back into the breeze here on 13. -- Neelie. -

:28:36. > :29:16.

:29:16. > :29:26.I'm told but they are nearly all local members or low handicap

:29:26. > :29:30.players. Not be imported from America. There is the gallant

:29:30. > :29:40.colonel closely followed by the red jacket of one of the stalwarts of

:29:40. > :29:55.

:29:55. > :30:02.previous two holes and a real improvement there for Jack Senior.

:30:02. > :30:06.They are two up. That was quite a vicious celebration. HAZEL IRVINE:

:30:07. > :30:16.Jack Senior, winner of the Lytham Trophy the share and he has put his

:30:17. > :30:19.

:30:19. > :30:24.side two up after 11 -- this year. At the last match, a couple of

:30:24. > :30:34.years ago, a Great Britain and Ireland lost both sets of foursomes

:30:34. > :30:40.

:30:40. > :30:50.one, and had he been a professional, he would have made $325,000 already

:30:50. > :31:02.

:31:02. > :31:09.this season. The situation looks Andrew Cotter. ANDREW COTTER: It is

:31:10. > :31:19.looking very promising for Great Britain and Ireland. The red

:31:20. > :31:33.

:31:33. > :31:43.trouser it Americans brightening up But if you are in any way short,

:31:43. > :31:43.

:31:43. > :32:56.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:32:56. > :33:03.Half a club shorter than that and harassed English to go first. --

:33:03. > :33:08.Harris English. The pin is back right today so the further right

:33:08. > :33:11.that you hit your approach shot, the longer you have to hit it. If

:33:11. > :33:21.you aim for the centre of the green there is quite a welcoming little

:33:21. > :33:26.bump up the back left which can be helpful. Club selection is vital

:33:26. > :33:36.here. It is not a very big target. It is going to be something in the

:33:36. > :33:51.

:33:51. > :33:58.region of a 5-iron I would suspect played for Mike times in the Walker

:33:58. > :34:08.Cup. He was a tough competitor. He has been down to our match at

:34:08. > :34:33.

:34:33. > :34:38.dealer couple of times. We will be Stewart is just a couple of paces

:34:38. > :34:48.closer. This is one of the flatter places of the golf course. Going in

:34:48. > :34:58.with the same club. Trying to get it up the slope. It is drifting.

:34:58. > :35:30.

:35:30. > :35:40.What do you think? I think he was like that. I'm getting back in a

:35:40. > :35:59.

:35:59. > :36:07.he did not have the best of lies. That has even dit up a bit, but the

:36:07. > :36:17.home side find a reasonable lie, or were there miles out to the right.

:36:17. > :36:31.

:36:31. > :36:41.firing well. They have moved to up now. HAZEL IRVINE: Yes, both of

:36:41. > :36:41.

:36:41. > :36:46.from Northern Ireland. Alan Dunbar is from Rathmore, the clerk of

:36:46. > :36:56.Graeme McDowell, who represented Great Britain and Ireland in the

:36:56. > :37:04.

:37:05. > :37:14.Lewis but the ter rain is very unfriendly. It is straight down he

:37:15. > :37:29.

:37:29. > :37:39.Lord lot of bumps and hollows. -- down here with lots of bombs.

:37:39. > :37:44.

:37:44. > :37:54.hope, but it is a bit more than that. You hope the ball has the

:37:54. > :38:08.

:38:08. > :38:13.pace. But he should not have been out just yet. Over the last few

:38:13. > :38:19.holes there has been a thickening of the arteries out here. Players

:38:19. > :38:24.on both sides just tightening up a little bit. That was beautifully

:28:18. > :28:25.have gelled so well in the team rinse it is great get out here and

:28:25. > :28:32.do the business. It is only days. How nervous did you feel, genuinely,

:28:32. > :28:36.on this opening few holes? Of it was very nervous. I needed a great

:28:36. > :28:40.swing of the first to get things going. I did hit a couple of

:28:40. > :28:46.nervous shot in the first couple of holes but I felt I held myself

:28:46. > :28:56.together. Well done, gentleman. You have much more work to do this

:28:56. > :28:57.

:28:57. > :29:03.afternoon. We were lead you to it. -- we will leave you to it. A few

:29:03. > :29:07.first tee nerves. There was a bit of a shock to the system. I thought

:29:07. > :29:13.I hit a good drive but the stand pox off a lot of the wind and I did

:29:13. > :29:16.not realise how much wind was off to the right. It was a bit

:29:16. > :29:20.embarrassing. We had a few bad shots and gave them a couple of

:29:20. > :29:26.shots but we came away with the wind so we are happy. Michael, did

:29:26. > :29:31.you feel there was a turning-point in this match? Not really. We knew

:29:31. > :29:35.coming into the back nine that the wind was going to be tougher. If we

:29:35. > :29:39.could stick with the guys and maybe hit a couple of holes around the

:29:39. > :29:44.turn and go back to square then we could to it from there. We started

:29:44. > :29:48.to pull of the shots coming into the closing stretch. Nigel, your

:29:48. > :29:54.boys played for since the right way around in that they did not go back

:29:54. > :29:56.to the keys together. Was this a deliberate strategy? High let the

:29:56. > :30:01.boys choose themselves. They know what they're doing, they have

:30:01. > :30:06.played this golf course many times. They are confident in their ability

:30:06. > :30:16.and I have a lot of faith in these two boys. You must be delighted

:30:16. > :30:17.

:30:17. > :30:27.with the start. Yes, it is good. And I think Jack and Stiggy are

:30:27. > :30:34.

:30:34. > :30:38.still two up, so let's get those. to be there, but at this moment it

:30:38. > :30:48.looks like a handsome start on this opening day of the Walker Cup

:30:48. > :31:08.

:31:08. > :31:13.KEN BROWN: What do. Mean, Peter? Points mean prizes! It is easy to

:31:13. > :31:23.get carried away. We do not wish to be the voice of doom but let us

:31:23. > :31:25.

:31:25. > :31:29.hold our water, as they say, and Americans hold the putts and over

:31:29. > :31:36.the last few years, our lads and lasses have learned to hole a few

:31:36. > :31:41.putts. Going back over the years, it in Ryder Cup matches and Walker

:31:41. > :31:51.Cup matches, two Americans seem to putt better under pressure. But not

:31:51. > :32:04.

:32:04. > :32:11.Kraft. When someone holes a part of that went in front of view, your

:32:11. > :32:17.secret be thinking I do not think he will hole that. -- you are

:32:17. > :32:24.secretly thinking. And suddenly you're left with this for a half.

:32:24. > :32:28.And if he misses it, the matches over. I'd just stuck my head out of

:32:28. > :32:38.the door and it is quite a cool wind and there is a spitting rain.

:32:38. > :33:05.

:33:05. > :33:15.Kelly Kraft. Very confident. And on not play on, it so if the US should

:33:15. > :33:40.

:33:40. > :33:45.win the next hole but will be half. have done with one less and

:33:45. > :33:55.knocking it under the breeze. bunkers at the front get in your

:33:55. > :33:55.

:33:55. > :34:01.way you bit. They catch your eye but there is plenty of room to land

:34:02. > :34:11.it just over and skip it up. The wind is strengthening off the

:34:12. > :34:25.

:34:25. > :34:33.the high street. It might be on another green. Cobb knows what

:34:33. > :34:41.happened there. That is 50 yards off! I noticed how high he teed the

:34:41. > :34:46.ball up. It certainly did not look as though he was going to try and

:34:46. > :34:56.play a puncture. He clipped it straight off the top of the tee and

:34:56. > :35:32.

:35:32. > :35:42.opened the face. Not what was line? -- but. I fancy that was a

:35:42. > :36:09.

:36:09. > :36:14.A little bit of good fortune there, just to nudge back from the bank.

:36:14. > :36:21.Weighted that ball go on the 17th? I fancy might have gone over the

:36:21. > :36:29.back of the crowd. It is on the 17th green of the other course here

:36:29. > :36:34.at Royal Aberdeen. So he will get a free drop because he is on the

:36:34. > :36:39.wrong green. He has to drop the ball off to the side of the green.

:36:39. > :36:45.An enormously could bit of fortune there although it was a stinker.

:36:45. > :36:51.But a chance of a pit and a putt. He almost needs a yardage for this

:36:51. > :36:55.second shot to the par three. fascinates me. All this faffing

:36:55. > :36:59.around about where to drop the ball and it doesn't make the slightest

:36:59. > :37:04.bit of difference whether he is within a foot or an inch or yard as

:37:05. > :37:09.long as he is not nearer the hole. But we have to keep up this

:37:09. > :37:15.tradition of taking five hours to go round. That is the new way of

:37:15. > :37:21.thinking about it. The Zurich here, measure up there. Oh, they are in

:37:21. > :37:31.the way as well! It is a wonder they get five holes done in a day.

:37:31. > :37:36.

:37:36. > :37:40.It gets dark early now, as well. Ken was mentioning the yardage and

:37:40. > :37:50.the caddy has walked all the way up there. So he knows the numbers. He

:37:50. > :38:04.

:38:04. > :38:14.has got a nice lie on the apron of not an easy shot. I think a pitch

:38:14. > :38:33.

:38:33. > :38:43.from here to within a talk 10 because this is going to take a bit

:38:43. > :38:44.

:38:44. > :38:54.of time. The 14th green and the final match. Stiggy is an

:38:54. > :39:01.

:39:01. > :39:07.interesting player. He any looks about 12! 21. Do is he? He does not

:39:07. > :39:17.hit it a long way but he has a good short game and he knows where the

:39:17. > :39:27.

:39:27. > :39:36.ball is going. Now is the time to captains will be biting their nails.

:39:36. > :39:44.They sometimes get frightened of winning. Curses, and million

:39:44. > :39:54.curses! Good Lord, Stiggy! We don't use language like that in the

:39:54. > :40:01.

:40:01. > :40:11.Walker Cup! Count your lucky stars. Good God! Look at him, he is still

:40:11. > :40:39.

:40:39. > :40:49.fuming! Please, please. A smile and to the high tide level. 17. Russell

:40:49. > :40:52.

:40:52. > :40:56.Henley. They must have taken some high energy pills at half-time!

:40:56. > :41:04.Strength in your short game with New high energy pills! --

:41:04. > :41:13.strengthened. It is supposed to be a bit of form. It is not all life

:41:13. > :41:19.or death. The rain is coming. Visibility closing in. I thought

:41:19. > :41:29.they said it was going to get better this afternoon. Only three

:41:29. > :42:05.

:42:05. > :42:15.holes have in this match so far Never looked like it! That Firm

:42:15. > :42:36.

:42:36. > :42:42.chip from Stiggy Hodgson one home supporter. Kelly Kraft knows

:42:42. > :42:47.what he has going to do. He has to hole this put for a three to take

:42:47. > :42:57.the match down the 18th. He has not really had the pace of these greens

:42:57. > :43:05.

:43:05. > :43:15.all day. He will have to find here. This for a three to win the 17th.

:43:15. > :43:26.

:43:26. > :43:36.Steven Brown drives away at the 15th. He has found the fairway

:43:36. > :43:37.

:43:37. > :43:43.nicely. We have seen a strange recoveries before. Four down with

:43:43. > :43:53.holes running out is not an ideal position. The Americans on the need

:43:53. > :44:33.

:44:33. > :44:43.Jack has this to win the match. A shots on the back nine but they

:44:43. > :44:55.

:44:55. > :45:05.home supporter you were delighted. That is the first series took away.

:45:05. > :45:08.

:45:08. > :45:18.A little light lunch. Salad. No Fuzzy, fizzy or even clear drinks.

:45:18. > :45:25.

:45:25. > :45:35.How does it feel to get the first point on the board? It is a great

:45:35. > :45:36.

:45:36. > :45:40.relief. It is great to get at point on the board early doors. I had a

:45:40. > :45:45.little changed up a few weeks ago and it has just been flying in. The

:45:45. > :45:50.momentum is going your way. I am playing here with the big lad, one

:45:51. > :45:58.of my best mates, and it could not be any better what was it like on

:45:58. > :46:08.that first tee Q it was not sure which ball to hit. I was seeing

:46:08. > :46:14.

:46:14. > :46:20.four or 5. We got the job done in keep the match alive. It is all

:46:20. > :46:28.over now. The Americans deserve at least one point from the morning. A

:46:28. > :46:34.little bit of this struggle. It is 3-1 at half time in the Walker Cup

:46:34. > :46:38.on the first day. They will walk back of the club house. I am sure

:46:38. > :46:44.Great Britain and Ireland will be delighted with how of this opening

:46:44. > :46:54.morning has played. The singles will start in a little while. There

:46:54. > :47:09.

:47:09. > :47:16.Jack Senior and Andy Sullivan quickly back into the club house.

:47:16. > :47:20.55 minutes before Jack Senior takes on his singles match. Not a bad

:47:20. > :47:27.morning's play. I would say Great Britain and Ireland will be

:47:27. > :47:32.delighted with that star yes. was a little rough play. We're

:47:32. > :47:37.talking about the best amateurs in the United States, Great Britain

:47:37. > :47:45.and Ireland. To be 40 yards off line with A4 macro iron was not

:47:45. > :47:51.good. But overall, could play. Hazel is with the winning Americans.

:47:51. > :47:59.Chris, you first Walker Cup along with Patrick. Can you describe the

:47:59. > :48:03.experience? It is awesome. It was little and nerve wrecking on the

:48:03. > :48:09.first tee. But to be who to play the way that we did in these

:48:09. > :48:16.conditions is awesome. -- to be able. This man holed some long

:48:16. > :48:22.putts today, didn't de? Yes, it is nice playing with him. You were the

:48:22. > :48:26.top amateur in America. How does this experience compare? This is

:48:26. > :48:33.even better because you get to play for the team at represent your

:48:33. > :48:41.country. You finished that match off strongly. When you look at the

:48:41. > :48:47.overall picture, howdy you see this? We are behind. That is how it

:48:47. > :48:57.is. In the Ryder Cup we're always behind in foursomes. The singles is

:48:57. > :49:06.

:49:06. > :49:14.where it is that. We will come threatened to change the look of

:49:14. > :49:19.the leaderboard. Paul the Eales -- Paul Eales said during commentary

:49:19. > :49:25.that Jack Senior had his brother Joe on the back. Joe is a PGA

:49:25. > :49:29.professional. After the foursomes had concluded, it was pointed out

:49:30. > :49:37.that that arrangement may be in contravention of Rider -- Walker

:49:37. > :49:41.Cup rules. We did check the situation out. And sure enough,

:49:41. > :49:51.local Raul four says a player is prohibited from having a

:49:51. > :49:53.

:49:53. > :49:57.professional player on his caddy. We sought clarification from the

:49:58. > :50:04.Royal and Ancient, the amateurs of the game of golf. Great Britain and

:50:04. > :50:10.Ireland captain Nigel Edwards told Jack Senior of the situation. The

:50:10. > :50:15.big Lancashire player was clearly upset that he had been in

:50:15. > :50:22.contravention of the rules. But as yet, neither he nor anybody else

:50:22. > :50:32.was a clear if the panel tee would suffer a penalty. I caught a up

:50:32. > :50:32.

:50:32. > :50:36.with Peter Dawson to explain the What is the outcome of this? It was

:50:36. > :50:42.discovered after the match that Jack Senior's brother is in fact a

:50:42. > :50:46.professional golfer. There are many conditions of competition attaching

:50:46. > :50:54.to the Walker Cup. One of them is that caddies cannot be a

:50:54. > :50:58.professional golfer. Jack was not aware of this. Because the breach

:50:58. > :51:04.of the rules was discovered after the result of the match, under the

:51:04. > :51:09.rules of golf, the result stands. Great Britain and Ireland won that

:51:09. > :51:15.match. Both team captains have been briefed of the situation. Both

:51:15. > :51:21.entirely happy to let the result stand. As is the President of the

:51:21. > :51:25.United States Golf Association. The result stands. It is unfortunate

:51:25. > :51:30.this was discovered late in the day. Jack has had to change his caddy

:51:30. > :51:34.for the remainder of the Walker Cup. I'm sure he and his brother are

:51:34. > :51:40.somewhat upset. We have these rules and they have to be applied to

:51:40. > :51:45.everybody. I'm sure this role will be reviewed for future matches.

:51:45. > :51:51.That is the situation. The result stands. My understanding is that

:51:51. > :51:56.Dhaka asked several times it this would be OK. -- Jack had asked. Why

:51:56. > :52:03.was he not alerted to this problem? I can only assume that he asked

:52:03. > :52:07.people who did not know the position. Had he come to us, it is

:52:07. > :52:13.there in black-and-white. I cannot really answer that. This rule will

:52:13. > :52:19.be reviewed going forward. You feel that common sense has prevailed?

:52:19. > :52:22.Absolutely. I do not think Jack had an advantage by having a

:52:22. > :52:28.professional as a caddy. A lot of the players bring experienced

:52:28. > :52:34.caddies. We are quite satisfied there was no advantage. And the

:52:34. > :52:41.United States team captain was the first to say that.

:52:41. > :52:45.No penalty for Jack Senior or the home team. Jack now has to do

:52:45. > :52:54.without his brother on the bar. Alan Dunbar's caddy has stepped in

:52:54. > :53:00.for this afternoon. It may have cost Great Britain and Ireland at

:53:00. > :53:06.point. It is a very unusual situation. How costly from a

:53:06. > :53:11.personal perspective has it been? We saw him on the putting green. He

:53:11. > :53:16.said he had asked people. Obviously he had not asked the right people.

:53:16. > :53:21.It must have been an awful situation. It might have cost them

:53:21. > :53:26.the Walker Cup. I think the right decision has come about. He will

:53:26. > :53:31.have been a little bit shaken going on to the first tee. I know that

:53:31. > :53:38.you empathised greatly with him. There is the Hogg from Kent to say,

:53:38. > :53:45.it is all right, go and play your game. It is such a shock. You think

:53:45. > :53:49.you have done nothing wrong. It is such a big event. He has played

:53:49. > :53:53.well. The rule does quite clearly state that you cannot have a

:53:53. > :54:00.professional career in your back. I am not sure why, but that is how it

:54:00. > :54:10.is the stop eight singles matches this afternoon. After the foursomes,

:54:10. > :54:24.

:54:24. > :54:29.it is down to man on man. The first this morning. Jack Senior, after

:54:29. > :54:38.the controversy, very relieved to be out there. He's meeting Jordan

:54:38. > :54:44.Spieth, the wonder kid. He is only 18. Rhys Pugh, the youngest member

:54:44. > :54:54.on either side at 17, plays Patrick Rodgers. The Live scores as we have

:54:54. > :54:54.

:54:54. > :55:36.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:55:36. > :55:46.Let us get straight back out on to the course. We will home duped into

:55:46. > :56:02.

:56:02. > :56:08.weather seems to have improved a little bit up the moment. Yes, it

:56:08. > :56:18.no rain at the moment but there is a stiff breeze that is making this

:56:18. > :56:18.

:56:18. > :56:58.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:56:58. > :57:03.At this moment, Great Britain and Ireland might be slightly ahead.

:57:03. > :57:08.The controversy this morning intrigued me. I thought the

:57:08. > :57:14.Americans accepted it in a most gracious manner. Our rules are very

:57:14. > :57:19.complicated but it could have been a very nasty situation. Good sense

:57:20. > :57:28.prevailed but I was very impressed with the attitude of the Americans.

:57:28. > :57:38.Innocence is no excuse. None whatsoever. Peter Uihlein knocking

:57:38. > :57:43.

:57:43. > :57:51.that a six footer in for four. Very unfortunate for Jack. He has

:57:51. > :58:00.obviously asked about his brother and not asked the right people. The

:58:00. > :58:10.game of golf has obviously, out on top again and commonsense prevailed.

:58:10. > :58:24.

:58:24. > :58:34.rules prevail, at not in the US amateur Championship for in our

:58:34. > :58:34.

:58:34. > :59:16.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:59:16. > :59:21.more pleasant than it was this morning. There is still a little

:59:21. > :59:30.sticky rain in the air. Maureen Madill is here. This is a match of

:59:30. > :59:37.high quality. Andy Sullivan for the half. Andy Sullivan has had six

:59:37. > :59:44.birdies. He nearly holed in one at the 11th and his two was matched by

:59:44. > :59:54.Harris English. He was putting extraordinarily well this morning

:59:54. > :00:19.

:00:20. > :00:25.shot here. That could have left him an awkward one. He is a big talent.

:00:25. > :00:35.He followed Tiger Woods to become the only other multiple winner of

:00:35. > :00:37.

:00:37. > :00:41.the US amateur. All those problems this morning for Jack Senior, a new

:00:41. > :00:46.caddy on the back, and he is struggling a bit. I don't think

:00:46. > :00:56.that did him any good. He is three down. He has obviously been

:00:56. > :00:58.

:00:58. > :01:08.mentally disturbed. An interesting, foolish mistake. His new man on the

:01:08. > :01:12.bag is one of the caddies here. He has his chance to show his form and

:01:12. > :01:17.help his man this afternoon. But Jack wants to put all that sort of

:01:17. > :01:27.nonsense behind him, mistakes, unfortunate bit, call them what you

:01:27. > :01:45.

:01:45. > :01:51.grip on these greens. They are firm but yielding at the same time. The

:01:51. > :01:56.course is in beautiful condition. It looks rather dark but it is not

:01:56. > :02:00.to called out there. It looks pleasant for golf. Tom Lewis down

:02:00. > :02:04.the fairway and over the two bunkers on the left-hand side.

:02:04. > :02:14.Peter has had a little bit of trouble off the tee on the last two

:02:14. > :02:39.

:02:39. > :02:43.Yes, a beauty. There is a little there. Absolutely. It does seem

:02:43. > :02:48.strange to see this wonderful but of land, with so many large

:02:48. > :02:56.buildings. Industry has crept nearer and nearer, north of the

:02:56. > :03:06.town. Full of hustle and bustle. Harris English playing against Andy

:03:06. > :03:18.

:03:19. > :03:28.Sullivan. Andy Sullivan two up at away so he likes that one. Behind

:03:29. > :03:35.

:03:35. > :03:45.the course. There was some filthy water, one of those fountains,

:03:45. > :03:58.

:03:58. > :04:08.usually placed around the ninth middle. Get is a good one. That is

:04:08. > :04:17.

:04:17. > :04:27.gentleman is doing, that is the sound microphone which picks up all

:04:27. > :04:28.

:04:28. > :04:38.the sounds for us. Coming back to the 13th green. This is Jordan

:04:38. > :04:52.

:04:52. > :04:57.wonderful collection of spectators. The old boy on the right in the

:04:57. > :05:07.Macintosh, golfing jackets, sting out for its. It is just the end of

:05:07. > :05:07.

:05:07. > :05:54.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:05:54. > :06:01.up both of those markers but Alan Dunbar this morning. He is not
