:01:16. > :01:23.For almost 90 years, golf's and Walker Cup has been introducing us
:01:23. > :01:29.to the golfing greats of tomorrow today. Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods,
:01:29. > :01:35.Kremer could tell, the list goes on and on. They all came to a
:01:35. > :01:39.retention in this, the foremost amateur team competition. It puts
:01:39. > :01:42.the United States of America against Great Britain and Ireland.
:01:42. > :01:47.It is a pretty sure bet that some of the young men we see this
:01:47. > :01:52.weekend will go on to become golfing greats. But all in good
:01:52. > :01:57.time and not before they have given their all in this the 43rd Walker
:01:57. > :02:02.Cup match. In the last decade or so, the matches have been pretty close
:02:02. > :02:10.and exciting fog will last part, but the last instalment was a
:02:10. > :02:14.runaway for the United States. Before the sides met in
:02:14. > :02:21.Pennsylvania, at the previous matches had been settled by a
:02:21. > :02:31.single point. Rickie Fowler played a key role in his last match as an
:02:31. > :02:36.amateur. And at last day singles victory by Peter Uihlein retained
:02:36. > :02:42.the cup for the United States. From there they the run-up an emphatic
:02:42. > :02:51.victory. This week, the US aiming to claim the Walker Cup for a 4th
:02:51. > :02:56.consecutive time. Yesterday evening, both sides were introduced by the
:02:56. > :03:03.respective captains. The anthems were played, formalities absurd,
:03:03. > :03:09.and we were ready to resume the oldest of rivalries in team golf.
:03:09. > :03:14.Ken Brown is a former five-times Ryder Cup player but this Walker
:03:14. > :03:18.Cup predates that. Why does it still matter in this day and age?
:03:18. > :03:23.He it is nice that amateur sport still has some sort of meaning, but
:03:23. > :03:28.it is such an important event to playing. It is the pinnacle of your
:03:28. > :03:33.golfing life as an amateur. If you can play in the Walker Cup you have
:03:33. > :03:40.ready made it and made it something special, and it is always on your
:03:40. > :03:46.CV. What does it mean far Saskia worse? It is like a Ryder Cup.
:03:46. > :03:53.There's nothing quite like to teams getting together, Match Play,
:03:53. > :03:58.foursomes and singles. The last two home matches had been marvellous.
:03:58. > :04:02.This is one of my favourite events to be at. It is a thrilling place.
:04:03. > :04:07.It is a place of real honesty and there is real honest endeavour from
:04:07. > :04:13.these young men. What about the boil Aberdeen links, a very testing
:04:13. > :04:18.course and a beautiful place to be -- will Royal Aberdeen. It is
:04:18. > :04:22.filled with tradition here. It is nine holes at eight and nine holes
:04:22. > :04:27.coming back into the breeze. It is in perfect condition so the boys
:04:27. > :04:33.will have a delightful venue to play it in. This is the calmest
:04:33. > :04:37.that it has been all day, right now. But there is a lot of weather
:04:37. > :04:41.coming in and how much of the leveller could that be? Could it
:04:41. > :04:45.play into the hands of the home team? I would think the American
:04:45. > :04:51.side overall a slightly stronger. But they have home advantage and
:04:51. > :04:55.the home crowd, so I think it is barely even over all. It will be,
:04:55. > :05:01.as always, the person or those crucial parts that will turn the
:05:01. > :05:11.match around. Let us explain the format. This is how it will be
:05:11. > :05:12.
:05:12. > :05:16.played. Today we have four matches Tomorrow, more foursomes in the
:05:16. > :05:22.morning and then all 10 players in each team involved in head to head
:05:22. > :05:30.singles. The US need to 13. To retain the Walker Cup and Great
:05:30. > :05:35.Britain and Ireland need 13.5. Let us introduce you to the teams. The
:05:35. > :05:45.home side is very young. All shapes and sizes and a real range of
:05:45. > :05:48.
:05:48. > :05:53.personalities. Stiggy Hodgson return from the 2019. Many that you
:05:53. > :06:03.will not have heard of but one that you should be aware of after his
:06:03. > :06:04.
:06:04. > :06:09.heroic in leading the Open at Royal It would have been silly to turn
:06:09. > :06:15.pro just a couple of months before this event, when I felt like I made
:06:15. > :06:19.that team after the Open. I struggled after the Open to get my
:06:19. > :06:29.concentration back. I had a lot of publicity in a way and it was good
:06:29. > :06:34.
:06:34. > :06:41.to let that pass and now my focus impressive group. They have six men
:06:42. > :06:48.in the top 10 of the world amateur rankings. Patrick Cantlay is the
:06:48. > :06:58.number one player and Peter Uihlein is one of the survivors of the 2009
:06:58. > :07:02.
:07:02. > :07:08.Playing the Majors, you are playing for yourself. In my case, I was
:07:08. > :07:12.representing my university in the States. But this is with nine guys
:07:12. > :07:16.you're not used to play with and also your country. It is a whole
:07:16. > :07:23.different feeling. Our open but last time my first tee shot was
:07:23. > :07:28.very nervous. Peter Uihlein and Tom Lewis are viewed as the natural
:07:28. > :07:33.leaders in both sides. For Tom Lewis, how much has his moment in
:07:33. > :07:37.the spotlight at royal St Georges prepared him for this? A great deal,
:07:37. > :07:44.I would say. Going into the Open Championship not a lot of people
:07:44. > :07:49.had heard of him. Locally, he was well known. Going their end
:07:49. > :07:53.shooting 65, to lowest round an amateur has ever scored in the Open
:07:53. > :07:59.Championship. He made the cut and finished 30th. It was a great week
:08:00. > :08:03.for him and will give him a lot of confidence. The Americans will lean
:08:04. > :08:07.heavily on Peter Uihlein. He is unbeaten in the Walker Cup. What
:08:07. > :08:12.could he go on to achieve in the game? It is difficult to say who is
:08:12. > :08:16.going to become a great one, who will be good and he will disappear.
:08:16. > :08:20.But to look at his record over the last three years and he is the best
:08:20. > :08:25.amateur in the world. He comes from a golfing background. I like the
:08:25. > :08:32.way he prepared for the Open Championship. He is well prepared,
:08:32. > :08:37.a professional amateur, as it were. Most of them are full-time amateurs.
:08:37. > :08:43.I remember Tom Watson same they were amateurs in name only. Gone
:08:43. > :08:47.are that days when the window- cleaner is going to give them a job.
:08:47. > :08:53.We have some wonderful systems over here in Great Britain and Ireland,
:08:53. > :08:58.developing young players, so most of them, the old school of the
:08:58. > :09:03.amateurs is dead and buried. These are semi-professionals. We will see
:09:03. > :09:08.a lot of them both this weekend and going forward. Let us meet the
:09:08. > :09:17.captains. For the United States, you have gym holed grief, a former
:09:17. > :09:23.Walker Cup player himself. -- Jim Holtgrieve. He is pitting his wits
:09:23. > :09:27.against Nigel Edwards. It is a game over 18 holes a where playing
:09:27. > :09:30.foursomes, we are playing at Royal Aberdeen, the boys know it very
:09:30. > :09:39.well. It looks as though the conditions will be similar to what
:09:39. > :09:43.we have played throughout the year. All the trophies and all the medals
:09:43. > :09:48.and all the accolades that everybody have got, it all goes
:09:48. > :09:58.away tomorrow when they walk over there and announced that there are
:09:58. > :09:58.
:09:58. > :10:52.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds
:10:52. > :10:57.At 9:00am today there were nerds, tension, excitement. Peter Uihlein
:10:58. > :11:04.hit the first shot in this Walker Cup contest. Tom Lewis went with a
:11:04. > :11:12.driver. A disconcerting start. Hooked it into a bush. That was not
:11:12. > :11:16.found. He and Michael Stewart lost the first hole. Consternation for
:11:16. > :11:26.the Great Britain and Ireland team straight away. They did get back
:11:26. > :11:41.
:11:41. > :11:50.into it. Senior and Solomon three Andrew Cotter and Peter Alliss.
:11:50. > :11:58.Windy conditions. Some brave soul going out to sea, looking for a
:11:58. > :12:07.lobster pot or tried to catch some crabs. -- trying. Look at this
:12:08. > :12:17.delightful golf course. It is in superb condition. His early days.
:12:17. > :12:24.First round. We will visit match one with Maureen Madill. We have
:12:24. > :12:34.been treated to some spectacular golf in this opening match. Tom
:12:34. > :12:39.
:12:39. > :12:47.Lewis and Michael Stewart hour one up. -- are. Only two par fives on
:12:47. > :12:56.this course. Probably a little bit out of reach. Looking for a
:12:56. > :13:03.replacement. I was on the first tee when Tom Lewis teed off. Drifted
:13:03. > :13:12.down the left-hand side. Lost it in the course. They have come fighting
:13:12. > :13:17.back, played some good steady golf. You will remember Tom Lewis from
:13:17. > :13:27.the Open Championship. Opening round of 65. Turning professional
:13:27. > :13:37.
:13:37. > :13:41.at the end of the week. He is going hope when he turns professional
:13:41. > :13:51.that he does not try to alter or too much. He is only a young fellow.
:13:51. > :13:53.
:13:53. > :13:59.He has got a good game. He just needs fine-tuning. Foursomes have
:13:59. > :14:05.always been very interesting. I had some great partners. Particularly
:14:05. > :14:15.Christy O'Connor, my old friend from Ireland. You have to play for
:14:15. > :14:16.
:14:16. > :14:23.your partner of relief. -- really. This is a risky second. Uihlein has
:14:23. > :14:28.pulled that a way. It was pretty much out of reach for him. The
:14:28. > :14:36.terrain is littered with bunkers. Lewis was always claimed short of
:14:36. > :14:46.those. I always -- I watched that ball and nobody moved. That could

:15:28. > :15:48.
:15:48. > :15:55.they can change very rapidly. So far it has been a curate's cake. --
:15:55. > :16:05.pate. A little bit of this, little bit of that. We have seen two balls
:16:05. > :16:15.
:16:15. > :16:21.lost of the first tee. Kelly Kraft lost his ball. Amazing. I like to
:16:21. > :16:25.see the crowd walking down the fairway. It is like the old days.
:16:25. > :16:35.It is all right when you only have a few hundred or a few 1000. When
:16:35. > :16:42.you get 20,000 or 30,000, it is very difficult. This is not a great
:16:42. > :16:52.lie. Michael Stewart has only got 90 yards. It is not the fattest
:16:52. > :16:56.
:16:56. > :17:02.green I have ever seen. He give it a good Digg. -- he struck it well.
:17:02. > :17:11.Excellent result. The Americans fired to the right. They do not
:17:11. > :17:16.seem to be in too much alarm. But they are still looking. It is
:17:16. > :17:25.horrid. They still have not found it. I am not actually convinced
:17:25. > :17:33.they have found this yet. It is totally thick down here. A rather
:17:33. > :17:37.risky shot that Uihlein took on. It was never going to make the green.
:17:37. > :17:42.It appeared on a few occasions as though they had found it. Then they
:17:42. > :17:52.started looking again. It always fascinates me when people stand
:17:52. > :17:57.

:18:07. > :18:11.

:18:19. > :18:28.Match two. This is Jack Senior with the fourth

:28:57. > :29:03.afternoon. We were lead you to it. -- we will leave you to it. A few

:29:07. > :29:13.I hit a good drive but the stand pox off a lot of the wind and I did
:29:13. > :29:16.not realise how much wind was off to the right. It was a bit

:29:20. > :29:26.shots but we came away with the wind so we are happy. Michael, did
:29:26. > :29:31.you feel there was a turning-point in this match? Not really. We knew
:29:31. > :29:35.coming into the back nine that the wind was going to be tougher. If we
:29:35. > :29:39.could stick with the guys and maybe hit a couple of holes around the
:29:39. > :29:44.turn and go back to square then we could to it from there. We started

:47:51. > :47:59.Chris, you first Walker Cup along with Patrick. Can you describe the

:48:16. > :48:22.putts today, didn't de? Yes, it is nice playing with him. You were the
:48:22. > :48:26.top amateur in America. How does this experience compare? This is
:48:26. > :48:33.even better because you get to play for the team at represent your
:48:33. > :48:41.country. You finished that match off strongly. When you look at the
:48:41. > :48:47.overall picture, howdy you see this? We are behind. That is how it
:48:47. > :48:57.is. In the Ryder Cup we're always behind in foursomes. The singles is
:48:57. > :49:06.
:49:06. > :49:14.where it is that. We will come threatened to change the look of
:49:14. > :49:19.the leaderboard. Paul the Eales -- Paul Eales said during commentary
:49:19. > :49:25.that Jack Senior had his brother Joe on the back. Joe is a PGA
:49:25. > :49:29.professional. After the foursomes had concluded, it was pointed out
:49:30. > :49:37.that that arrangement may be in contravention of Rider -- Walker
:49:37. > :49:41.Cup rules. We did check the situation out. And sure enough,
:49:41. > :49:51.local Raul four says a player is prohibited from having a
:49:51. > :49:53.
:49:53. > :49:57.professional player on his caddy. We sought clarification from the
:49:58. > :50:04.Royal and Ancient, the amateurs of the game of golf. Great Britain and
:50:04. > :50:10.Ireland captain Nigel Edwards told Jack Senior of the situation. The
:50:10. > :50:15.big Lancashire player was clearly upset that he had been in
:50:15. > :50:22.contravention of the rules. But as yet, neither he nor anybody else
:50:22. > :50:32.was a clear if the panel tee would suffer a penalty. I caught a up
:50:32. > :50:32.
:50:32. > :50:36.with Peter Dawson to explain the What is the outcome of this? It was
:50:36. > :50:42.discovered after the match that Jack Senior's brother is in fact a
:50:42. > :50:46.professional golfer. There are many conditions of competition attaching
:50:46. > :50:54.to the Walker Cup. One of them is that caddies cannot be a
:50:54. > :50:58.professional golfer. Jack was not aware of this. Because the breach
:50:58. > :51:04.of the rules was discovered after the result of the match, under the
:51:04. > :51:09.rules of golf, the result stands. Great Britain and Ireland won that
:51:09. > :51:15.match. Both team captains have been briefed of the situation. Both
:51:15. > :51:21.entirely happy to let the result stand. As is the President of the
:51:21. > :51:25.United States Golf Association. The result stands. It is unfortunate
:51:25. > :51:30.this was discovered late in the day. Jack has had to change his caddy
:51:30. > :51:34.for the remainder of the Walker Cup. I'm sure he and his brother are
:51:34. > :51:40.somewhat upset. We have these rules and they have to be applied to
:51:40. > :51:45.everybody. I'm sure this role will be reviewed for future matches.
:51:45. > :51:51.That is the situation. The result stands. My understanding is that
:51:51. > :51:56.Dhaka asked several times it this would be OK. -- Jack had asked. Why
:51:56. > :52:03.was he not alerted to this problem? I can only assume that he asked
:52:03. > :52:07.people who did not know the position. Had he come to us, it is
:52:07. > :52:13.there in black-and-white. I cannot really answer that. This rule will
:52:13. > :52:19.be reviewed going forward. You feel that common sense has prevailed?
:52:19. > :52:22.Absolutely. I do not think Jack had an advantage by having a
:52:22. > :52:28.professional as a caddy. A lot of the players bring experienced
:52:28. > :52:34.caddies. We are quite satisfied there was no advantage. And the
:52:34. > :52:41.United States team captain was the first to say that.
:52:41. > :52:45.No penalty for Jack Senior or the home team. Jack now has to do
:52:45. > :52:54.without his brother on the bar. Alan Dunbar's caddy has stepped in
:52:54. > :53:00.for this afternoon. It may have cost Great Britain and Ireland at
:53:00. > :53:06.point. It is a very unusual situation. How costly from a
:53:06. > :53:11.personal perspective has it been? We saw him on the putting green. He
:53:11. > :53:16.said he had asked people. Obviously he had not asked the right people.
:53:16. > :53:21.It must have been an awful situation. It might have cost them
:53:21. > :53:26.the Walker Cup. I think the right decision has come about. He will
:53:26. > :53:31.have been a little bit shaken going on to the first tee. I know that
:53:31. > :53:38.you empathised greatly with him. There is the Hogg from Kent to say,
:53:38. > :53:45.it is all right, go and play your game. It is such a shock. You think
:53:45. > :53:49.you have done nothing wrong. It is such a big event. He has played
:53:49. > :53:53.well. The rule does quite clearly state that you cannot have a
:53:53. > :54:00.professional career in your back. I am not sure why, but that is how it
:54:00. > :54:10.is the stop eight singles matches this afternoon. After the foursomes,
:54:10. > :54:24.
:54:24. > :54:29.it is down to man on man. The first this morning. Jack Senior, after
:54:29. > :54:38.the controversy, very relieved to be out there. He's meeting Jordan
:54:38. > :54:44.Spieth, the wonder kid. He is only 18. Rhys Pugh, the youngest member
:54:44. > :54:54.on either side at 17, plays Patrick Rodgers. The Live scores as we have

:56:18. > :56:58.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds
:56:58. > :57:03.At this moment, Great Britain and Ireland might be slightly ahead.
:57:03. > :57:08.The controversy this morning intrigued me. I thought the
:57:08. > :57:14.Americans accepted it in a most gracious manner. Our rules are very
:57:14. > :57:19.complicated but it could have been a very nasty situation. Good sense
:57:20. > :57:28.prevailed but I was very impressed with the attitude of the Americans.
:57:28. > :57:38.Innocence is no excuse. None whatsoever. Peter Uihlein knocking
:57:38. > :57:43.
:57:43. > :57:51.that a six footer in for four. Very unfortunate for Jack. He has
:57:51. > :58:00.obviously asked about his brother and not asked the right people. The
:58:00. > :58:10.game of golf has obviously, out on top again and commonsense prevailed.
:58:10. > :58:24.

:59:30. > :59:37.high quality. Andy Sullivan for the half. Andy Sullivan has had six
:59:37. > :59:44.birdies. He nearly holed in one at the 11th and his two was matched by

:00:37. > :00:41.the US amateur. All those problems this morning for Jack Senior, a new
:00:41. > :00:46.caddy on the back, and he is struggling a bit. I don't think

:00:56. > :00:58.
:00:58. > :01:08.mentally disturbed. An interesting, foolish mistake. His new man on the
:01:08. > :01:12.bag is one of the caddies here. He has his chance to show his form and
