:00:29. > :00:35.Hello. We are back at Woburn Golf Club in Bedfordshire and it feels a

:00:36. > :00:39.bit like we've come home. This may be the 40th anniversary of the Ricoh

:00:40. > :00:45.Women's British Open Championship but this place on one of its three

:00:46. > :00:47.places, the Duke's course was so influential on helping to grow this

:00:48. > :00:53.great Championship in its early years. Thoughtfully nine years in

:00:54. > :00:59.the 80s and 90s this place was hugely influential and attracted an

:01:00. > :01:03.evermore international field and producing some wonderful champions,

:01:04. > :01:10.the likes of America's Patty Sheehan, Swedes Helen Alfredsson and

:01:11. > :01:16.a feisty fiery Australian Karrie Webb, who won the first of her three

:01:17. > :01:20.British Open titles right here two decades ago. She, of course, has

:01:21. > :01:26.gone on to become one of the true greats of the winning's game. So,

:01:27. > :01:30.Woburn was in effect the launch pad for her career, as indeed it has

:01:31. > :01:34.been for this great event. Because, it was given major status in 2001,

:01:35. > :01:40.and has since travelled around the country to some of the most storeyed

:01:41. > :01:44.courses. The likes of St Andrews and Turnberry, Carnoustie and Royal

:01:45. > :01:50.Birkdale. And now, after 17 years, we are back. Only this time, we are

:01:51. > :01:51.going to tackle the newest of Woburn's three courses, the Marquess

:01:52. > :02:06.Course offer what is the fourth of the world's top 50

:02:07. > :02:08.players, although our defending champion Inbee Park, is sadly not

:02:09. > :02:11.amongst them. After completing the career Grand Slam at Turnberry last

:02:12. > :02:14.year, the South Korean has been troubled by a hand injury for most

:02:15. > :02:19.of this season and will instead be at a tempting to be ready for the

:02:20. > :02:25.real Olympics in a couple of weeks' time. So without Inbee the focus of

:02:26. > :02:28.attention is on golf's new generation. Youth is trending in

:02:29. > :02:34.women's golf and how. The world number one Lydia Ko is only 19 years

:02:35. > :02:38.old. The latest teenage major sensation Brooke Henderson of Canada

:02:39. > :02:43.is only 18, and Brittany Lang, the newly crowned US Open champion is a

:02:44. > :02:47.relatively ancient 30 years of age. But there is one young woman in this

:02:48. > :02:51.field who perhaps knows this layout and this place better than anyone. A

:02:52. > :02:57.lot of attention this week on Woburn's own Charley Hull.

:02:58. > :02:59.I do feel a lot of pressure, but at the end of the day it's something

:03:00. > :03:05.you've got to deal with. So, tell us about your so far. You

:03:06. > :03:09.had a great finish. Does that give you the confidence in Majors to

:03:10. > :03:12.think you belong here, you can do this? It does, definitely. I've

:03:13. > :03:19.actually played quite well in a couple of the other Majors,

:03:20. > :03:23.especially that one, it gives me a good feeling and lets me know how to

:03:24. > :03:26.do with the pressure coming down the stretch.

:03:27. > :03:29.You know, I still wake up some mornings and can't believe I'm the

:03:30. > :03:34.US Open women's champion. It's definitely something all Americans

:03:35. > :03:38.dream of winning. I know not only Americans but it is a dream come

:03:39. > :03:42.true to have my family there. It was so special and sometimes I can't

:03:43. > :03:46.believe it, I have to see the pictures to believe it really

:03:47. > :03:50.happened. It is a huge turning point in my career. I've always liked

:03:51. > :03:55.Dunne lacked a bit of confidence and it gives me lots of confidence and I

:03:56. > :03:59.just have to keep remembering it. Sometimes if you say, I want to win

:04:00. > :04:04.ten tournaments this season, it can become, I'm realistic. If somebody

:04:05. > :04:09.plays better it is out of my hands. I like to set minor goals and goals

:04:10. > :04:14.that I can work on, and eventually because I'm better I've got more

:04:15. > :04:18.chances of winning Championships. It's amazing here. The landscape is

:04:19. > :04:22.so beautiful, the old buildings, the churches, the history, it's all

:04:23. > :04:26.incredible and I love this golf course. It's a little bit more

:04:27. > :04:29.traditional than growing up in Canada, it's like a lot of the

:04:30. > :04:33.courses they there so I look forward to the week and having four solid

:04:34. > :04:37.days. I've never really been a long hitter, I've always had the mindset

:04:38. > :04:43.that when I do have an irony in my hand, try and go for it, take it as

:04:44. > :04:46.an advantage -- iron in my hand. And take it from there. It's the club I

:04:47. > :04:52.feel most comfortable with. The long game is my strength and the short

:04:53. > :04:55.game I've been working on, so I have to make sure I hit lots of good

:04:56. > :04:58.shots this week and get on a good place to give myself an opportunity

:04:59. > :05:03.to hit it into the green. The greens can be tricky, early on you have to

:05:04. > :05:07.hit some good iron shots and figure out the brakes because the greens

:05:08. > :05:11.are undulating. Around the greens is where everybody will score, or not

:05:12. > :05:15.score. Being a good pace putter, hitting it to the right spots, into

:05:16. > :05:19.the bowls or the slopes to get it closest will be the key. These

:05:20. > :05:23.greens are sneakily undulating. You can't really see them when you are

:05:24. > :05:27.far away but when you are close up you are able to see the subtle

:05:28. > :05:32.slopes. I feel like it breaks a bit more than what it looks like, so the

:05:33. > :05:34.plotting is going to be the key for this week.

:05:35. > :05:38.And, guess who is number one in the putting stats on the American Tour

:05:39. > :05:41.right now? Lydia Ko, the world number one, and she leads the way in

:05:42. > :05:46.so many respects in this game right now. Now, as you may know, South

:05:47. > :05:50.Korean golfers have donated the rankings in the upper echelons of

:05:51. > :05:54.those rankings for the last ten, 15 years, there are five in the top ten

:05:55. > :05:58.and 30 in the top 50. Leading everyone and flying the flag for New

:05:59. > :06:03.Zealand is Lydia Ko, the kiwi is the youngest man or woman ever to ascend

:06:04. > :06:06.to the world number one spot and she is celebrating her 40th week there.

:06:07. > :06:10.Another teenage phenomenon Brooke Henderson is hot on her heels after

:06:11. > :06:13.landing the year's second major in Washington in June.

:06:14. > :06:24.So, this year's conditions are a contrast to the links conditions and

:06:25. > :06:28.wind and rain that these players experienced at Turnberry and other

:06:29. > :06:31.causes over the last few years. It is parkland and heathland all the

:06:32. > :06:35.way over the next four days as we bring you live coverage of this

:06:36. > :06:41.great event. Let me show you who amongst Dunne where those first out

:06:42. > :06:45.on the opening morning. Dame Laura Davies, with Norway's Suzann

:06:46. > :06:48.Pettersen and her Solheim Cup partner Alison Lee. This is the

:06:49. > :06:52.first time they played together since the controversial incident at

:06:53. > :06:56.the Ryder Cup last year in Germany which has become a notorious talking

:06:57. > :06:59.point in the history of the Europe versus America rivalry. Early start

:07:00. > :07:04.for Canada's Brooke Henderson, making her second appearance in the

:07:05. > :07:08.event, Anna Nordqvist and Spain's Azahara Munoz. Momoko Ueda for the

:07:09. > :07:12.seventh time here from Japan, playing with former world number one

:07:13. > :07:16.Stacy Lewis of America and one of the inform players of the year,

:07:17. > :07:22.Harrier jet Anna Gunn of Thailand. She made the early running today.

:07:23. > :07:26.She was already 3-under when she came to the ninth. This is the start

:07:27. > :07:30.of a great run for the first Thai player ever to win on the LPGA Tour

:07:31. > :07:34.earlier in the season. Good things come in threes for her right now.

:07:35. > :07:38.This approach to the 10th enabled her to dive down to 5-under for

:07:39. > :07:43.around. The 20-year-old won three titles in a row in Alabama, Virginia

:07:44. > :07:49.and Michigan in May and June earlier this season. That was a stone dead

:07:50. > :07:53.birdie on the making. And a third would follow in succession at the

:07:54. > :07:58.11th. The world number six in enjoying a really dominant start to

:07:59. > :08:05.her round. Just as she is enjoying a quite stunning breakthrough season.

:08:06. > :08:09.So, it is Jutanugarn, her older sister is also in the field and this

:08:10. > :08:12.is a look at things on a bright sunny morning 50 miles north of

:08:13. > :08:18.London at Woburn on the opening day of the women's major Championship.

:08:19. > :08:23.It is Ariya by a shot from Azahara Munoz and Beatriz Recari, the fellow

:08:24. > :08:26.Spaniard, in the group on 4-under par. Sei Young Kim having a good

:08:27. > :08:31.season and Stacy Lewis, a two-time major winner, and another major

:08:32. > :08:36.winner, So Yeon Ryu, at 4-under as well. It is stacking up quite

:08:37. > :08:39.nicely. The big names are congregating near the top and Ken

:08:40. > :08:44.Brown is on the course and in the commentary box we have Andrew

:08:45. > :08:47.Cotter, Rory Madel and Peter Alice watching it unfold.

:08:48. > :08:50.COMMENTATOR: Thank you, Hazel, and welcome on this beautiful day to

:08:51. > :08:54.Woburn Abbey and the Marquess Course. Many years ago the great

:08:55. > :08:58.Henry Longhurst, who wrote for many years for the Sunday Times, used to

:08:59. > :09:01.say aren't we lucky? Those of us involved in the game of golf, it

:09:02. > :09:08.takes us to so many beautiful places. And by Jove he was right,

:09:09. > :09:12.for this is absolutely magnificent. We're here for four days, and I'm

:09:13. > :09:20.sure if the weather is kind you are going to enjoy it almost as much as

:09:21. > :09:36.we are. Azahara Munoz has started with a lot of birdies. 5-under par,

:09:37. > :09:40.no dropped shots so far today. Sit down, sit down. Speaking to it in

:09:41. > :09:44.English but it is not obeying. Peter, this is a real feature of

:09:45. > :09:47.this golf course, which you had more than a small hand in designing. The

:09:48. > :09:54.greens tend to throw the ball off quite a lot, don't they? They do. It

:09:55. > :09:58.was Clive Clark and myself. Clive Platt predominantly, who designed

:09:59. > :10:05.this golf course. And it was an absolute jungle of rhododendrons and

:10:06. > :10:08.ferns. Seeing him cutting his way through with a machete he found some

:10:09. > :10:14.wonderful locations. It's a delightful course. Our first look at

:10:15. > :10:19.Brooke Henderson, the world number two, young 18-year-old Canadian. The

:10:20. > :10:20.first Canadian player to win a major since Mike Weir won the Masters in

:10:21. > :10:42.2004. She doesn't usually hold back. Strong, strong swing there. She's

:10:43. > :10:45.already annexed a major into her CV this year, beating Lydia Ko in a

:10:46. > :10:53.play-off in the second major of the year. Women's golf is in fine shape.

:10:54. > :11:01.Here's another young player, one of the Jutanugarn's, this is Ariya,

:11:02. > :11:06.thankfully she prefers to be known as May. How about that. Into the

:11:07. > :11:20.13th and that is setting up a really good birdie chance for her.

:11:21. > :11:33.Recari at the 17th, the last of the short holes. Quite a big green, wide

:11:34. > :11:42.and narrows. That is a nice, generous flag position today. In the

:11:43. > :11:48.middle of the new Forest. Absolutely fabulous. Alison Lee, American

:11:49. > :11:51.Solheim Cup player. There was a little bit of mischief making going

:11:52. > :11:54.on, I think, in this grouping because it's Alison Lee, Suzann

:11:55. > :11:58.Pettersen, remember they had a bit of a kerfuffle last year at the

:11:59. > :12:05.Solheim Cup over whether it was a conceded putt. But they are old pals

:12:06. > :12:17.again. Recari now, second shot, on the edge of the bunker. Stabs it out

:12:18. > :12:23.and up. A number of good Spaniards in the field. We have Recari and

:12:24. > :12:29.Munoz out early doors and Carlota Ciganda coming later. They are all

:12:30. > :12:37.here with the coach. It must have been fun carving the holes out of

:12:38. > :12:43.this dense terrain. Clive lost about four inches and three stone! Now,

:12:44. > :12:50.from one Spaniard to another. We get a good view, she is walking quite

:12:51. > :12:59.severely downhill here. The greens tend to be on quite a tilt. This

:13:00. > :13:07.will be a fairly slow chip up the green. Just toppled over the back of

:13:08. > :13:14.the green. On the bank. It is super loud. I can hear everything. The

:13:15. > :13:23.days of chipping... Good job you can't see everything.

:13:24. > :13:31.Interesting, you hardly ever see anyone chipping now with a 7-iron,

:13:32. > :13:36.it's always a 9-iron or a wage. Interesting change of tactics.

:13:37. > :13:39.Floaty one coming down the slope from there, Peter. It is pretty

:13:40. > :13:49.quick if you get above the cup. Nicely played. -- 9-iron or a wedge.

:13:50. > :14:00.Nice crisp sound there of the chip shot, the course is beautifully

:14:01. > :14:05.prepared. Stacy Lewis at the 13th. She has allowed a lot of swing on

:14:06. > :14:15.that. Round she comes. Round, just not quite high enough. Good effort.

:14:16. > :14:18.Susan Simpson of the LG you was telling us earlier in the week that

:14:19. > :14:22.the green speeds are running at 11 but with these severe slopes, when

:14:23. > :14:33.you get a putt like that down the hill it is pretty slippery.

:14:34. > :14:40.Sei Young Kim, now, one of the very long hitters on the women's Tour.

:14:41. > :14:46.This is for birdie on 17. She has won twice already in

:14:47. > :14:49.America. That one's tracking. Downhill, superfast, uphill, you

:14:50. > :15:09.need a bit of hitting. Now, putt for a birdie. What about

:15:10. > :15:13.this one, Ken? It's a bit from the right and a little bit slower than

:15:14. > :15:22.you think. Striking pair of trousers on, aren't they? Recari for a par at

:15:23. > :15:28.the 17th, in the bunker from the tee shot, and it may be... How could

:15:29. > :15:32.that Miss? Dropped shot. Yes, and the par threes have not been kind to

:15:33. > :15:48.her. That's her third dropped shot on the par-3s. Azahara Munoz. Saving

:15:49. > :15:59.her par-3 on 14, very nice up and down. She keeps the momentum going,

:16:00. > :16:05.remains at 5-under. And there is a look at the leaderboard. Aintree up

:16:06. > :16:11.at the front on 6-under par closely followed by Munoz, and then you can

:16:12. > :16:21.see how good the scoring is, a raft of fours and threes.

:16:22. > :16:30.Stacy Lewis. Tee shot at the 14th. Across the valley, up the slope, it

:16:31. > :16:37.kicks away a bit. Not pleased. I bet she can give you a nasty drive --

:16:38. > :16:53.dry Burnham dot-mac The tee shot across the valley,

:16:54. > :17:01.quite a long shot. Here is our leader.

:17:02. > :17:12.The heart of the green, it has gone to the back of it, but OK.

:17:13. > :17:18.Nordqvist, Anna Nordqvist. The runner-up in the US women's open.

:17:19. > :17:28.Beaten in the play-off by Brittany Lang. She accidentally grounded her

:17:29. > :17:37.club and had a two shot penalty. She's played really well this year.

:17:38. > :17:44.Delightful looking back at the 15th, and on many of these holes you drive

:17:45. > :17:58.across the little valley. This is a long snaking par-5 of a hole.

:17:59. > :18:04.Heavily bunkered down here, you have to plot your way. You feel there is

:18:05. > :18:08.a wee bit more room because the trees are slightly further apart

:18:09. > :18:14.than they are on the front nine. But you can see the clever bunkering.

:18:15. > :18:20.Here is a swing you will enjoy, Peter. It is aggressive. It is. It

:18:21. > :18:30.is a good old welly. She looks like she can play. Quick -ish rhythm.

:18:31. > :18:38.Boom. I love it. A good old spank. It is skippering away up the

:18:39. > :18:41.fairway. Well done. -- skipping. Laura Davies, one of

:18:42. > :18:49.the stalwarts of women's golf, Dame Laura. What a great character and

:18:50. > :18:54.talent she has been in this game for, well, we won't say how many

:18:55. > :19:00.years, it is not gallant. She is 1-over par. She still seems to enjoy

:19:01. > :19:05.the game as much as ever. Perhaps not quite as much when you miss a

:19:06. > :19:08.few of those dodgy putts. But from long range, here she goes. I say, I

:19:09. > :19:30.say, Laura, Laura. Well, a little bit on the upslope

:19:31. > :19:37.for Lewis at 14. She just has to be very careful she doesn't take it a

:19:38. > :19:41.trifle heavy. Well. A tiny bit heavy. Pretty special that. Great

:19:42. > :19:49.technique. Sei Young Kim. Putting together a

:19:50. > :20:18.fine round. Well, that's outside the commentary

:20:19. > :20:23.box. Fairly wide of the green. Henderson on the left, Munoz Anna

:20:24. > :20:34.Nordqvist, three good drives. Ken. A lot of debating what to do. Munoz is

:20:35. > :20:43.going to lay up, 296 yards left, 200 leaves 96 with the breeze in her

:20:44. > :20:49.face. Will not reach the rather deep left traps. Good swing. Good hit.

:20:50. > :21:13.Good position. Back to our leader on 14. Birdie

:21:14. > :21:20.attempt here, rolling, undulating greens, they take a bit of reading.

:21:21. > :21:35.A little bit of me left on the bone in her. -- on the bone there.

:21:36. > :21:44.Henderson's second to the 15th. Well down the shaft. The shot is towards

:21:45. > :21:46.the right-hand bunker. Swinging around a bit, chasing towards the

:21:47. > :22:08.gap, that's OK, good position. This has certainly got her

:22:09. > :22:18.attention. I don't think it's outside the hole.

:22:19. > :22:37.Well, it was. It was a very good putt indeed. Good par saving 34

:22:38. > :22:40.Jutanugarn. -- three, for Jutanugarn. Ideal playing

:22:41. > :22:45.conditions, is it a little cool? It is warming up, the sun is coming

:22:46. > :22:49.out, the sunshine is pleasant, libraries. Couldn't have been a

:22:50. > :23:08.better layer for Munoz, 104 yards, the green holding. -- layup. Too

:23:09. > :23:16.much zip on that. Aske Nordqvist to put the divot back in, will you,

:23:17. > :23:28.Ken? Henderson is the third member of this party. What sort of shot is

:23:29. > :23:30.it? 80, 90, 70? 75. A good lie. You have to pitch it up to the flag

:23:31. > :23:42.otherwise it will come trickling back. It will have a little bit of

:23:43. > :23:48.zip on it. She is thinking birdie. Gripping well down the club. That

:23:49. > :23:57.could spin. Yes, it does, and stops. Well done, good shot, that's an

:23:58. > :24:02.excellent result. Well, I really feel these players have to make the

:24:03. > :24:07.most of good conditions. There is a little bit of rain forecast later in

:24:08. > :24:13.the day. Up to the 18th for Kim. Third shot, four under. Chip and a

:24:14. > :24:17.putt here would do her proud. This was the first group out this

:24:18. > :24:24.morning. At the ungodly hour of 6:30am. Tennis players don't do

:24:25. > :24:31.that, you know. Cricket players start at 10:30am, 11am, football is

:24:32. > :24:34.even. But not golfers. Here is our Championship leader on 15 command

:24:35. > :24:36.despite the length of the hole you can see she is going with a 3-wood.

:24:37. > :25:02.Placement is everything. Great take away there. Classically

:25:03. > :25:11.on plain, very strong in the lower body, look at the strength in the

:25:12. > :25:12.legs. Good wind-up. With most of these modern players, no holding

:25:13. > :25:23.back. I'm delighted to see the course in

:25:24. > :25:28.such a wonderful condition. When the camera goes in tight on the green,

:25:29. > :25:33.you can see the quality of the grass. Its magnificent. From below

:25:34. > :25:37.the cup this will be one of the slower putts she's had today. She's

:25:38. > :25:46.holed a couple of nice ones on the back nine to save pars. This is for

:25:47. > :26:05.a birdie. Good effort.

:26:06. > :26:39.The final green for Sei Young Kim, final shot, we hope. No, up out of

:26:40. > :26:45.it. That's annoying, but it's a 69. A couple of dropped shots in there,

:26:46. > :26:47.but very fine play. The world number five well up on top of the

:26:48. > :27:04.leaderboard. Might have learned a little bit from

:27:05. > :27:09.her playing partner. Nordqvist. There is a nice crowd out here,

:27:10. > :27:13.lovely day for watching golf. Woburn has always been a good place for

:27:14. > :27:30.spectators and I'm sure they will role in in their thousands over the

:27:31. > :27:32.weekend. Brooke having a glimpse of this one. She will have learned a

:27:33. > :27:36.little bit from her playing partners. It's not particularly

:27:37. > :27:42.fast, it has a little bit of left to right movement. Imagine, 18 years of

:27:43. > :27:48.age, ranked number two in the world behind Lydia Ko. Pretty impressive

:27:49. > :27:54.for a short pro career. Lydia Ko is only 19, not even 20. Young

:27:55. > :27:56.superstars. It is great to see. Just got to keep the pace on this one,

:27:57. > :28:33.otherwise it will duck to the right. Beatriz Recari. Well played. Really

:28:34. > :28:43.nice round by the 20-year-old Spaniard.

:28:44. > :28:53.Laura Davies, another longish putt. Here she is, 2-over par, at the

:28:54. > :28:55.17th. The last of the short holes. Left she comes, left she comes, and

:28:56. > :29:01.hello! APPLAUSE

:29:02. > :29:14.Well done, Laura, back to 1-over. With Jutanugarn out in front, a

:29:15. > :29:22.couple of chances of birdies coming in. But there you can see Beatriz

:29:23. > :29:27.Recari, Sei Young Kim, first in posting scores of 69.

:29:28. > :29:36.Nordqvist on the 16th. One under par. Don't go over there too far.

:29:37. > :30:26.She's safe. Anxious moments. 5-under par. A beauty. Side by side.

:30:27. > :30:30.Henderson safely on the fairway. One of the things I noticed when I walk

:30:31. > :30:35.the course is there are a lot of holes in the front nine where from

:30:36. > :30:38.the tee you consider green, but these final holes, you see what is

:30:39. > :30:44.in front of you, it is scary sometimes. The fairway is generous,

:30:45. > :30:50.though, there's no crimping on the fairway. You will notice the women

:30:51. > :30:54.gripped down the shaft abets, whether they feel it gives them a

:30:55. > :31:02.little bit stronger grip, better leveraged. This is Stacey, Stacy

:31:03. > :31:10.Lewis. She's had a wonderful career. Still going strong.

:31:11. > :31:48.AJ, 282 out of reach, must be out of reach. She doesn't hold back,

:31:49. > :31:54.though, my God, is a big gap the left, is it OK? Through the gap and

:31:55. > :32:09.nearly on the green, the nearest we've seen today.

:32:10. > :32:14.Yes, lovely to see people out in shirt sleeves, the opening

:32:15. > :32:20.Championship is a great Championship, on the last day,

:32:21. > :32:24.everyone with anoraks and dark clothing, lovely to see

:32:25. > :32:32.short-sleeved order and lovely to see this, a shot like that blasted

:32:33. > :32:53.away, good balance. Perfect position for a chip and a putt and a birdie.

:32:54. > :33:07.Anna Nordqvist, the rough is very light. She's got to get over the

:33:08. > :33:12.little tree in front, keep it under the bow of the larger oak tree,

:33:13. > :33:21.which shouldn't be difficult, it's a natural trajectory that any club she

:33:22. > :33:33.fancies. Would favour a bit right of the flag. Oh, my. That wasn't a very

:33:34. > :33:39.good, well directed shot, it kicked back into the bunker, may be OK,

:33:40. > :33:43.maybe we'll either a simple shot. The lie looked good, the shot didn't

:33:44. > :33:54.look all that difficult, she could get the four. You think she will

:33:55. > :34:10.head the drop, but she is accurate, perfect shot, 137 yards. The breeze

:34:11. > :34:17.is slightly against her. Get up. It has done very well indeed, wasn't

:34:18. > :34:26.the crispest of strikes, but it has got the job done, got a good look at

:34:27. > :34:40.birdie. Now, Henderson. A nice lie, one or two balls picking up the mud.

:34:41. > :35:32.Setting up the drawer shot. Lewis's approach into 15. Oh,

:35:33. > :35:39.excellent shot. Excellent shot indeed by Stacy Lewis. A little

:35:40. > :35:42.frustrated these days because it is over two years since she has won a

:35:43. > :36:01.golf tournament, believe it or not. Everything beautifully presented by

:36:02. > :36:07.Ricoh, since they came into golf, anything oozes class. On a setting

:36:08. > :36:11.such as this, it all marries in so perfectly. It really is a delight to

:36:12. > :36:19.come to a tournament like this and see something different. First

:36:20. > :36:25.round, good so far, early of course, although play started at 6:30am, it

:36:26. > :36:29.is getting towards 11:30am, so they've been out there for five

:36:30. > :36:40.hours. The weather forecast is maybe a little bit Shari this afternoon.

:36:41. > :36:46.There is a better breeze, a bit of wind -- showery. Ideal conditions. A

:36:47. > :36:56.good score of players in red numbers already. I think a lot of these

:36:57. > :37:01.players who are coming over to play in a British Open for the first time

:37:02. > :37:09.were pleasantly surprised to find a course that does much more, it that

:37:10. > :37:24.I'd better. Van links courses? Yes, van links courses. -- than. I think

:37:25. > :37:29.the links courses can be too severe. There is our leader, and what a nice

:37:30. > :37:35.little pitch she played there. Two cracking shots on a good pitch. She

:37:36. > :37:51.is 6-under par at the moment, leading by one. Quite a fanciable

:37:52. > :37:55.putt this one uphill, gradually from left to right. Not particularly

:37:56. > :38:05.quick, this will be a good birdie. Oh, unlucky, what a beautiful

:38:06. > :38:23.strike. For one so young, she plays

:38:24. > :38:33.remarkably well, started young, liked the game, enjoyed practising,

:38:34. > :38:39.a joy to see, Kent. It is lovely to see youth out watching, plenty of

:38:40. > :38:54.youngsters. It is a fabulous game, there's no doubt about it. This to

:38:55. > :38:59.join the leader. That turned a lot. It did, it looked pretty good when

:39:00. > :39:10.it was a few feet short and then really turned very quickly.

:39:11. > :39:25.And this for birdie. The putting has been the bedrock of Anna Nordqvist's

:39:26. > :39:31.game for a number of years now. I'm sure she'll be looking forward to

:39:32. > :39:35.the Olympics. She can't wait, she so excited for it. A lot of the players

:39:36. > :39:44.are just receiving their kit, makes it a reality. Right age, or just

:39:45. > :40:01.outside if you are going to dribble it. Good read, Ken. Our leader

:40:02. > :40:10.pounds one end, another birdie, 7-under. Look at that for a card,

:40:11. > :40:21.not one drop shot, seven birdies, two shots clear of the field, four

:40:22. > :40:40.holes to play... Three holes to play, in fact.

:40:41. > :40:54.Well, after that the light delightful third shot from Lewis,

:40:55. > :41:03.Bishop be a formality but -- surely this should be a formality. She has

:41:04. > :41:13.got the first time. Never looked comfortable. No, didn't. If you're

:41:14. > :41:18.going to hit them that firmly on fast greens, you need to keep it

:41:19. > :41:24.within the confines of the hole. Here is Katrina Matthews, the pride

:41:25. > :41:33.of Scotland and Britain, birdie hole, a long way away, but this

:41:34. > :41:41.doesn't look too bad. What an effort. Well done. Remarkable lady.

:41:42. > :41:59.She's at the Olympics. She's perked up in the last six

:42:00. > :42:04.holes, just one drop shot and then bingo, came to live, came alive,

:42:05. > :42:13.Laura finishing off here at the 18th.

:42:14. > :42:35.Laura has never had great success on the courses here at Woburn.

:42:36. > :42:51.APPLAUSE 74. Well, disappointing par-4 Lewis

:42:52. > :43:01.there are three beautiful third shot. It can only be put down to

:43:02. > :43:08.lack of concentration. But it is a tidy looking card, nonetheless. I do

:43:09. > :43:11.like watching this swing, it's brisk, it's a good one goal, it

:43:12. > :43:21.looks like somebody who's going to give the ball a good tonk. She has

:43:22. > :43:33.good firm hand on the shaft, quick river, zips it through the ball,

:43:34. > :43:51.head still. Henderson of Canada, nips one away, just do the right of

:43:52. > :44:02.the flag. Nicely done. Sweet shot. That is her sister on the bike, she

:44:03. > :44:12.plays in the United States -- the bag. After much debate with the

:44:13. > :44:35.caddy, she has decided on the club, she's playing 155.

:44:36. > :44:44.Heart of the green, but you see the ball easing down on that steep

:44:45. > :44:49.slope. Always tricky to really commit to your decision when it is

:44:50. > :44:59.taking you so long to arrive at that decision. But Nordqvist little

:45:00. > :45:11.brisket to the tee. She might be able to carry it, she's pushed it,

:45:12. > :45:18.mind. A loose one, to loose ones in a row.

:45:19. > :45:41.Back to our leader, Jutanugarn, trying to draw it to that fairway,

:45:42. > :45:53.as she overcooked it eight had? -- a tad. Driving after the 16th, three

:45:54. > :45:58.holes to negotiate, and Azahara Munoz, three tournaments on the

:45:59. > :46:04.bounce, the first you have that in a road, as their initial success.

:46:05. > :46:09.Great stuff from the tie and she is our two shot lead in the early

:46:10. > :46:14.stages of the women's British Open at Woburn. Katrina Matthews knows

:46:15. > :46:23.what it takes to win, she did in 2009 and also featuring in the early

:46:24. > :46:27.part of our transmission. Some of the big names in women's golf are

:46:28. > :46:36.mustering at the head, with many more to come. Stacy Lewis in debate

:46:37. > :46:54.with her caddy. Just in the first cut, lose a bit of

:46:55. > :46:58.control here. 2013 champion, coming into good form, three top tens,

:46:59. > :47:10.seventh in the US Open, so hitting his stride. Can she control this?

:47:11. > :47:21.This will run a bit when it lands. The price is paid for missing the

:47:22. > :47:25.fairway off the tee. Yes, it is a slightly easier shot coming in from

:47:26. > :47:29.the right-hand side on the 16th because you can come of the axis of

:47:30. > :47:42.the green, but just missing the fairway cost her DV as we going to

:47:43. > :47:51.Katrina Matthew -- cost her dearly. Asking the wind to hit it. That has

:47:52. > :47:54.done well, that is quite a hefty finishing hole, 388 yards, par-4

:47:55. > :48:09.year. On the top of the tee, there is a

:48:10. > :48:14.slope and this is going downhill from where she is standing, so quite

:48:15. > :48:20.a testing putt. It goes over the hill and turns to her left. Once it

:48:21. > :48:29.gets over the hill, it is quite quick.

:48:30. > :48:45.It is one of these putts you will be happy to take to from here. She is

:48:46. > :48:53.taking a long time, went with the six eventually. Came up here, and

:48:54. > :48:56.there is the slope Ken was talking about. Down it comes. No, something

:48:57. > :49:17.still left for a par. Back to 16. Just coming out of the

:49:18. > :49:24.semi-rough but she zips through the ball quickly, so she might get some

:49:25. > :49:40.action on it. Oh, and that is hit down nicely.

:49:41. > :49:49.Anna Nordqvist was in the sand. It was a loose tee shot, said this now

:49:50. > :50:19.to save for par. Nearly, but a shot goes at a gentle

:50:20. > :50:26.par-3, it was a wild two shot -- tee shot. A couple of bogeys it will be

:50:27. > :50:31.in a row, after dropping a shot on the 16th as well. Unsettled by

:50:32. > :50:40.something. Possibly two bogeys in a row.

:50:41. > :50:54.And now over par for her round, losing a lot of ground. Henderson

:50:55. > :51:03.has had a good luck while the others were putting, taken too much time,

:51:04. > :51:05.they were putting the clock on the last hole. It is a little slippery

:51:06. > :51:31.down there. It is interesting, the clock Court

:51:32. > :51:40.of, that tee was slow, but also an eye on this pitch for Stacy Lewis.

:51:41. > :52:04.You can hear the sound of it coming out of there.

:52:05. > :52:19.Now Azahara Munoz trying to keep her card clear of bogeys. She got there

:52:20. > :52:21.in the end. A player who thrives very much on confidence, tends to

:52:22. > :52:48.get good streaks going. Good to see Yani Tseng featuring,

:52:49. > :52:54.she's had a rough time in the last three years with form. But two shot

:52:55. > :53:02.clear at the moment for the leader, it is a family business with her

:53:03. > :53:07.sister, Maria, but their parents travelled with them and handle their

:53:08. > :53:10.affairs, in charge, so the family trots around the globe with much

:53:11. > :53:24.success on the golf course. Oh, great camera angle, showed you

:53:25. > :53:34.how much swing there was on that putt, good pace from May, as she

:53:35. > :53:44.likes to be called. Heading back to Thailand next week for a week off,

:53:45. > :53:50.really looking forward to it. There is no spin initially, there you go,

:53:51. > :53:52.and there it rolls, the idea is to get it rolling forward with topspin

:53:53. > :54:13.as soon as possible. It lost its true line. Anyway...

:54:14. > :54:18.Black magic. Stacy Lewis, a former world number one, she's coming back

:54:19. > :54:25.into a bit of form. She's heading to the Olympics as well. There's only

:54:26. > :54:30.one, of all the men who pulled out of the Olympics, only the South

:54:31. > :54:38.African he was pulled out over fears of the virus, so the women seem more

:54:39. > :54:58.robust than the men. Well, that is a great par. One bad

:54:59. > :55:10.shot can always be repaired by one good putt. Part of the winning USA

:55:11. > :55:15.team last week. Katrina Matthew, let's see if she can close with a

:55:16. > :55:22.birdie. It's been a very good back nine.

:55:23. > :55:31.It was cracked down there, it was trying for her, but a timid putt for

:55:32. > :55:50.the 2009 champion, but fall birdies on her back nine. Back on the tee.

:55:51. > :55:57.That is bound to be blocked out, there's a stand of oak trees down

:55:58. > :56:03.there halfway down the right side. And I think she's going to be

:56:04. > :56:11.tangling with them. So, Katrina Matthew to finish out. Lovely back

:56:12. > :56:17.nine from Katrina Matthew. Out in 38, back in 32, four birdies, no

:56:18. > :56:26.drop shot, after a round of 70, and nicely placed. A good look at the

:56:27. > :56:31.17th. A fairly straightforward par 155 for the leader. All the way up

:56:32. > :56:47.the back. Just pokes that in there. APPLAUSE

:56:48. > :56:49.Get it all the way back at least, you can see the back level on the

:56:50. > :57:06.pin there. Well, the three tee-shots straddling

:57:07. > :57:13.the fairway, and Henderson has definitely got the best angle into

:57:14. > :57:21.this flag. Just avoided the bunker, 158 yards. The flag is on the right

:57:22. > :57:29.of the green, otherwise these horsemen at -- horse chestnut trees

:57:30. > :57:37.would be in the way. Look how far down in the grip she goes. We can

:57:38. > :57:42.see a few drops of rain, and just thereby Henderson. A beautiful shot,

:57:43. > :57:51.again just loses a bit of control but birdie opportunity. There is

:57:52. > :58:01.Brittany's sister on the back, Brooke, Brittany and brolly.

:58:02. > :58:06.Nordqvist is nearer, she has got 139, she has made a little valley.

:58:07. > :58:19.She can pitch at five or six yards short.

:58:20. > :58:30.Great shot by Nordqvist. I walked up this hole with her and practice, and

:58:31. > :58:36.she was dialled in then as she is today. This is a testing one. Can't

:58:37. > :58:47.go over the oak, has to go and delivered, it will be a tricky one.

:58:48. > :58:54.It has made live tricky for himself, you're better missing on the side of

:58:55. > :59:04.the fairway -- like tricky for herself.

:59:05. > :59:18.Looking down on the 17th tee, and Stacy Lewis... This rain has come

:59:19. > :59:22.from nowhere. Looks to be lying, and good distance, what about this for a

:59:23. > :59:30.shot from Stacy Lewis. That'll do nicely.

:59:31. > :59:47.Super slow Mo rain, nothing quite like it. Look at the swing of Stacy

:59:48. > :59:58.Lewis, high hands at the top. Suffered from back problems as a

:59:59. > :00:13.youngster, perfect impact position. So Having to draw this on the 13th.

:00:14. > :00:19.Oh, nasty bouncer there, could have carried another yard she wouldn't

:00:20. > :00:29.have hit it on that slight slope. She has to watch it, because it gets

:00:30. > :00:39.swept away, but that is OK. Having driven in to the right rough, it is

:00:40. > :00:50.not too bad, it is lying OK. She just has to get it high in the air.

:00:51. > :01:06.Could be dandy. Go on, down the slope. Merely very good. -- nearly.

:01:07. > :01:12.Like Phil Mickelson and Paul Casey, graduate of the same college. Being

:01:13. > :01:15.on the LPGA Tour for a few years. She is from Malaga, southern Spain

:01:16. > :01:23.and she will go to the Olympics with Carlota Ciganda, the two Spanish

:01:24. > :01:30.representatives. A little down the slope for Brooke Henderson. A little

:01:31. > :01:32.from the right. Bit of moisture on the green. Is it going to run out?

:01:33. > :01:46.It is trying. Go on, baby. Jutanugarn from the back of 17. Big

:01:47. > :02:00.slope here now, moving the ball left to right. Good for pace.

:02:01. > :02:14.Yani Tseng. Her caddy keeping player and ball dry. Until the very last

:02:15. > :02:20.moment. There we go. Yani Tseng gets to three under par. With all the

:02:21. > :02:26.problems she's had with her form, five Majors in three years she won

:02:27. > :02:33.by the age of 22, 23. She's had real problems since.

:02:34. > :02:47.Now, this would be one of the great escapes if Munoz can get away with a

:02:48. > :02:55.four at 18. No. That's her first dropped shot of the day. It is a

:02:56. > :02:59.very fine 68, full of good play. She has been coming into a bit of form,

:03:00. > :03:09.and the confidence should be seeping back through her.

:03:10. > :03:22.Jutanugarn, just to tap in for her par on the 17th. Confident strike.

:03:23. > :03:32.She heads for the file hole still two shots clear.

:03:33. > :03:40.-- final hole. Two shots clear of Surrey and who, but also perhaps two

:03:41. > :03:49.shots clear of this young woman, this is for a lovely two on the

:03:50. > :03:51.17th. Beautiful tee shot and Stacy Lewis rips the reward, moves to five

:03:52. > :04:14.under par. Now, so you knew, 2011 US Open

:04:15. > :04:19.champion. So a player with some degree of pedigree. It's not going

:04:20. > :04:21.to make the crest of the hill. A little shower has slowed things up

:04:22. > :04:46.fractionally. It's still Ariya Jutanugarn, the

:04:47. > :04:50.youngest of the Jutanugarns sisters. Leading the way by two shots. Stacy

:04:51. > :04:54.Lewis, the gritty Texan has had a bit of a drought in terms of

:04:55. > :05:00.victories over the last couple of years. This is event numbers 56

:05:01. > :05:05.without a win for a person in Stacy Lewis who love to win. Former world

:05:06. > :05:09.number one, of course. There is Beth Allen leading the standings now on

:05:10. > :05:16.the Ladies European Tour. The American leading the way and a good

:05:17. > :05:28.season. Advocates Madsen, one of several very good games in the hunt

:05:29. > :05:37.as well. Stacy Lewis on the 18th tee. -- Nanna Koerstz Madsen.

:05:38. > :05:52.Ideally down the left half of the fairway. Further left than that. A

:05:53. > :06:06.groan from Lewis. The tree is in the way. Tree's on the way indeed.

:06:07. > :06:26.It's all about visualisation. See the shot you want to hit.

:06:27. > :07:03.Now, back to this 407 yard par-4 13th. This is for a four, a bit of

:07:04. > :07:13.the left. Hurry. Perfect, dead centre for So Yeon Ryu. That keeps

:07:14. > :07:21.her at 5-under. Very tidy looking card. Just the one blemish on the

:07:22. > :07:24.fourth. A look at the tee shots on the 18th of the group containing the

:07:25. > :07:27.leader, Jutanugarn, Stacy Lewis command off to the left, might just

:07:28. > :07:39.be a little blocked out by the trees. Jutanugarn in fine fettle. On

:07:40. > :07:43.the right-hand side today, the pin. You want to be on the left-hand

:07:44. > :07:50.side, it feeds down over the initial reached towards the hole. What do

:07:51. > :07:55.you think? Just a few places left of the flag and let it come down? Yes

:07:56. > :08:00.and it can't be much more than an 8-iron for her. The prevailing wind

:08:01. > :08:04.is a westerly, so they are just checking out that it's coming into

:08:05. > :08:07.them just a little bit on the left-hand side. So the terrain and

:08:08. > :08:19.the breeze are possibly helpful for them here.

:08:20. > :08:27.Just coming up a fraction short. And by her high standards, not good

:08:28. > :08:47.enough. Stacy Lewis feared the worst on the

:08:48. > :08:51.tee, she said she'd be blocked out by trees. But she might be able to

:08:52. > :09:02.sneak it down to the opening of the green.

:09:03. > :09:08.Sit, sit. Sitcom set. Doing a lot of talking, the ball is not listening.

:09:09. > :09:20.That is a good result from there. -- sit, sit.

:09:21. > :09:32.Sharon Woods on 17, Long Cross green putt. Come on, nearly as good as her

:09:33. > :09:36.uncle, tipping in the last roll. I thought she was going to do a little

:09:37. > :09:41.bit of her uncle Tiger on the 16th at Augusta back in 2005. She is the

:09:42. > :09:47.niece of Tiger Woods. Tiger's half brother is her father. She's

:09:48. > :09:58.beginning to make her own name on the Tour. She's a very talented

:09:59. > :10:00.player. The world number six has got this putt for an opening round of

:10:01. > :10:22.64. Quite a slow one up the hill. Aiming well left to allow for that

:10:23. > :10:51.break. Fine effort, though. Well, it's been a very stress-free

:10:52. > :10:57.round of golf for her, hasn't it? For Jutanugarn and Stacy Lewis, both

:10:58. > :11:03.keeping bogeys off their card. Stacy Lewis sizing up her birdie putt now.

:11:04. > :11:07.A little bit ragged off the tee, but managed to chase it out of the

:11:08. > :11:11.rough, flirting with the trees down the left-hand side. This will go

:11:12. > :11:14.down the slope. It is a quick putt. Again, though, the shower that has

:11:15. > :11:20.come through in the last ten minutes, 15 minutes, might have

:11:21. > :11:29.taken a little bit of the fire out of the greens. You can't afford to

:11:30. > :11:34.be too bowled with this one, though. -- bold. That is something of a

:11:35. > :11:38.miscalculation. Do you know, that was a very similar strike off the

:11:39. > :11:43.blade to the very short one that she missed two or three holes ago. It

:11:44. > :11:47.just seemed to decelerate slightly, flirted the Blade open and she sent

:11:48. > :11:51.it right off the line that she intended to. If you get the wrong

:11:52. > :11:56.side of one of these slopes it just looks even worse. That is not the

:11:57. > :11:59.distance you want to leave yourself on the last. This could make or

:12:00. > :12:16.break her mood for the afternoon. We talked about her coming back to

:12:17. > :12:22.some form. She was the world number one back in 2013 and 2014. She's

:12:23. > :12:28.just started to find a few results of late, a few top tens. This is to

:12:29. > :12:35.close with a par to keep bogey off her card and for a round of 67.

:12:36. > :12:39.Nicely done by Stacy Lewis. The 2013 win at St Andrews is off to a bright

:12:40. > :12:52.start at the Marquess Course at Woburn.

:12:53. > :13:04.And a small one for Jutanugarn to finish off. That's an opening round

:13:05. > :13:10.of 65 for very much the form horse. And she sits atop the leaderboard at

:13:11. > :13:17.this moment. So it is the 20-year-old from

:13:18. > :13:21.Thailand, Jutanugarn, who leads, Ariya Jutanugarn and her sister

:13:22. > :13:26.going well with 65, never finished better than tied 45th in two British

:13:27. > :13:31.Women's Open events, so a flying start, two clear of the 2013

:13:32. > :13:36.champion Stacy Lewis. So Yeon Ryu also out on the course at 5-under

:13:37. > :13:43.par. So, Let's hear from the leaders with Hazel.

:13:44. > :13:50.Ariya, super start at the Ricoh British Women's Open champion. Tell

:13:51. > :13:55.me how much you like this course at Woburn. I think it suits my game, I

:13:56. > :13:59.like the course so much. Wonderful season for you, not least

:14:00. > :14:04.three wins in a row. Can you tell me why you have had so much success and

:14:05. > :14:08.what has been the major spark in your career this season?

:14:09. > :14:13.I think this year I have so much fun when I play golf and I really want

:14:14. > :14:16.to have fun with every single round. Rain now I'm really happy, and I

:14:17. > :14:20.just focused on what is under my control.

:14:21. > :14:32.You came so close in the first major of the year and I wonder how much

:14:33. > :14:36.momentum the ANA Inspiration has given you. I'm feeling really

:14:37. > :14:41.confident after the ANA. You've made a really good start, well done.

:14:42. > :14:44.Stacy Lewis, the winner of this Championship three years ago, how do

:14:45. > :14:47.you assess your performance after this round?

:14:48. > :14:53.It was good, I played a really solid round, I only had one putt for par

:14:54. > :14:57.and I made it and playing with Ariya was a good motivation, she got off

:14:58. > :15:00.to such a good start and she was making birdies and firing at flags

:15:01. > :15:04.and she got me focused on making birdies to keep up. It helps to play

:15:05. > :15:09.with her today within striking distance for the next few days. I

:15:10. > :15:15.was going to say, it is a contrast to the conditions you won with at St

:15:16. > :15:18.Andrews, the rough, the weather, all of these things. Do you prefer this

:15:19. > :15:20.contrast, or is it something you have to get to grips with at the

:15:21. > :15:24.British Open Championship? It just doesn't feel like a British

:15:25. > :15:28.Open at all. It is more like I would say Canadian open than British Open.

:15:29. > :15:32.It is just different, I prefer the links because I love links style

:15:33. > :15:35.golf so I look forward to this Championship every year because of

:15:36. > :15:39.the style of golf, but that's not to say you can't win on this too.

:15:40. > :15:41.This is quite a summer for you, week eight of nine in a row on the

:15:42. > :16:02.course. Next week there is the small matter of a

:16:03. > :16:04.wedding for you and then you go on honeymoon to Rio.

:16:05. > :16:07.You don't do things by halves, do you? No, it seemed a little better

:16:08. > :16:11.when we planned it at the time. But it kind of is what it is and I know

:16:12. > :16:13.next week I will not play much golf anyway so I was like let's just do

:16:14. > :16:17.the wedding and getting Dunne it over with and do the honeymoon and

:16:18. > :16:20.go to Rio, that's what I want to do, just go and enjoy Rio, I don't want

:16:21. > :16:22.to stress about it, I just wanted to go and have fun. It's the most

:16:23. > :16:25.unusual wedding preparations I've heard of the we wish you the best

:16:26. > :16:28.for this week and next week, of course. Thank you. Yes, a winner's

:16:29. > :16:31.cheque would help pay for the fee is. No doubt one of the favourites

:16:32. > :16:35.for the title is local girl Charley Hull of Kettering. Charley Hull is

:16:36. > :16:41.one of the latest starters in amongst some very big names in the

:16:42. > :16:43.women's game. Her fellow Englishwoman Melissa Reid headed out

:16:44. > :16:52.with the seven time major winner Karrie Webb and Asuka Kashiwabara of

:16:53. > :16:59.Japan. The newly crowned open champ, Brittany Lang, and Charley Hull is

:17:00. > :17:03.out at 11:50am with world number one Lydia Ko. Hull finished tied second

:17:04. > :17:07.to the kiwi in the season's first major in California in April.

:17:08. > :17:13.Charley Hull, who is from Kettering, knows that a lot is expected of her

:17:14. > :17:14.this week. In fact, she's been giving a few tips to Naga Munchetty

:17:15. > :17:27.around these parts. Jelinek I've been here since I was

:17:28. > :17:30.nine years old. I play the Duke and Duchess. They are much tighter. I

:17:31. > :17:35.have not played this one in years. It is a good golf course. It is fun.

:17:36. > :17:41.Right, we are at the 12th, we're going to get going. You've brought

:17:42. > :17:47.the wind with you. I haven't picked the best of days!

:17:48. > :18:02.I'm seeing water, should I be scared? Let me try. That was better

:18:03. > :18:07.than mine. Underworld's worst caddy. -- I'm the world's worst caddy.

:18:08. > :18:12.Definitely going into the water. Tell me about Woburn and what it

:18:13. > :18:16.means to you. It's my home course and I've been here since I was nine

:18:17. > :18:22.years old. It's nice to be home. Does it feel like home? Yes. For the

:18:23. > :18:28.open to be here it must be an advantage? Yes, I like the home

:18:29. > :18:31.crowd. Do you feel you will have an advantage? Not necessarily an

:18:32. > :18:35.advantage, it can be a disadvantage in some ways because of the pressure

:18:36. > :18:39.but I just have to forget it. Is it stupid to ask if you are going for

:18:40. > :18:42.the win? Of course I want to win on my home course, that would be

:18:43. > :18:50.wicked. I'm going to hit a baby wedge. I would go and help you look

:18:51. > :18:57.for it but... I don't want to get wet. Don't worry! So, you are one up

:18:58. > :19:00.after one, I didn't give you the most difficult challenge on that

:19:01. > :19:04.hole but we have a couple more to go. How are you looking forward to

:19:05. > :19:08.the Olympics? I'm really looking forward to it, it's going to be a

:19:09. > :19:13.lot of fun, it's going to be a great experience, especially in the

:19:14. > :19:16.Olympic Village, it will be fun meeting athletes and go and watch

:19:17. > :19:20.some other sports as well. And the idea of a Gold Medal is something

:19:21. > :19:24.completely different, isn't it? That would be really cool, wicked,

:19:25. > :19:29.amazing. To stand on the podium with a Gold Medal, can you imagine the

:19:30. > :19:33.atmosphere? I think it would be brilliant. I don't want to think too

:19:34. > :19:38.far ahead but the thought of it is exciting.

:19:39. > :19:42.It is a fantastically exciting couple of weeks for women's golf,

:19:43. > :19:45.Rio on the horizon, they play after the men in the second week of the

:19:46. > :19:48.Olympics in Rio and Charley Hull will be accompanied by Katrina

:19:49. > :19:52.Matthew in the women's event and the two of them could go very well, you

:19:53. > :19:57.would imagine. There is a field of 60 in Rio and 41 players contending

:19:58. > :20:00.for the Gold Medal in Rio are at Woburn this week so it is a stellar

:20:01. > :20:05.field in preparation not just for that but of course for the great

:20:06. > :20:08.title itself. And we saw the rain earlier with Charley Hull and Naga

:20:09. > :20:12.Munchetty and the rain has been falling a little bit. It is pretty

:20:13. > :20:17.gentle stuff and it's not cold so we are thankful for small mercies. We

:20:18. > :20:21.were all in Troon where it was cold and wet for much of the time so it

:20:22. > :20:25.is nothing really. This is the situation as we look down at the

:20:26. > :20:30.midway point of the opening day of the Ricoh Women's British Open

:20:31. > :20:34.Championship. It was Ariya Jutanugarn setting the pace and

:20:35. > :20:39.Shanshan Feng has made inroads into the lead. She is 6-under through 12

:20:40. > :20:43.holes. The woman who became the first Chinese player in history,

:20:44. > :20:48.male or female, to win a major title, is very much in the hunt for

:20:49. > :20:52.this one. Stacy Lewis, never to time major champion, some top names up

:20:53. > :20:58.there. Also in contention, 5-under par. There is an yours, two-time

:20:59. > :21:04.winner on the LPGA Tour. Ha Na Jang. And Sarah Jane Smith making inroads

:21:05. > :21:07.too. Alena Sharp will accompany Brooke Henderson in the Canadian

:21:08. > :21:11.team at Rio, the two of them representing and flying the Maple

:21:12. > :21:14.Leaf in Brazil. Looking further down, Sei Young Kim going well.

:21:15. > :21:23.Teresa Lu had a top ten finish at Turnberry last year. In-Kyung Kim is

:21:24. > :21:28.in there at 3-under par. Maria Jutanugarn, our leader's older

:21:29. > :21:31.sister by 18 months -- Moriya Jutanugarn. She's posted 69 today.

:21:32. > :21:37.Karrie Webb, 3-under for the three-time winner of this great

:21:38. > :21:46.event after 11 holes. Mirim Lee of Korea. Catriona Matthew. Minjee Lee

:21:47. > :21:52.has pinched Karrie Webb's place for the Rio Olympics. Karrie Webb mental

:21:53. > :21:56.Minjee Lee. She will take part for the Aussies in a few weeks' time.

:21:57. > :22:00.Charley Hull featuring on the fourth page of the leaderboard in the big

:22:01. > :22:04.group at 1-under par. Charley Hull was two under through three holes

:22:05. > :22:09.and dropped one at the 8th, 1-under. So, off we go for the afternoon's

:22:10. > :22:17.play. We see Emily Kristine Pedersen, last year's winner on the

:22:18. > :22:22.LET. We have 38 players, indeed we have 43 players all under par right

:22:23. > :22:25.now. So, let's get out onto the golf course, the beautiful Marquess

:22:26. > :22:36.Course again and return you to the great company of Ken Brown, Andres

:22:37. > :22:41.-- Andrew Cotter, Peter Alliss and Maureen Milind. COMMENTATOR: Isn't

:22:42. > :22:45.that a grand view across the dip to the other side. Charley Hull not

:22:46. > :22:49.quite in full flow, Maureen, but not doing too badly on the opening

:22:50. > :22:54.round. No, and I'm sure she's glad to get underway because there is

:22:55. > :22:58.lots of pressure for the home favourite. This is a beautiful golf

:22:59. > :23:07.course. She has hit it down to the launch pad. The green is sitting way

:23:08. > :23:14.below her. That plummets to Earth. The caddy's right, pretty good.

:23:15. > :23:20.Looking into that green, it reminds me of the 3rd hole on the Dukes

:23:21. > :23:26.course, the way the green sits below you and the beautiful backdrop. Yes,

:23:27. > :23:30.well, everywhere you look here you get beautiful views, magnificent

:23:31. > :23:38.trees, a mixture of fine trees, rhododendrons. It's a stunning bit

:23:39. > :23:43.of ground. Welcome our first look at our world number one, Lydia Ko.

:23:44. > :23:47.She's got an interesting swing, it's not for the purists, she has a

:23:48. > :23:51.quirky bit on the back swing but the rhythm is good. She just gets the

:23:52. > :23:56.job done. I hope she doesn't have too many lessons or try to change

:23:57. > :24:00.too many things because Dominic and keep Donaghy keeps going the way she

:24:01. > :24:10.is because she is doing quite nicely. Leave her alone. Making up

:24:11. > :24:17.the trio is Linda Wessberg, the Swedish player. Currently eighth in

:24:18. > :24:24.the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit. Lightly raced this year

:24:25. > :24:33.because she became the man last year so a few other things on her mind.

:24:34. > :24:37.-- she became a mum last year so a few other things on her mind.

:24:38. > :24:50.Good shot. The wind has died down. We've had

:24:51. > :24:55.some light rain, a bit of drizzle, something a little bit harder, a

:24:56. > :24:59.little bit of sharpish wind blowing through the course, but nothing too

:25:00. > :25:06.serious. As we seek Thompson at the 8th, 2-over par, long birdie putt,

:25:07. > :25:09.won't be far away. There you are, I told you so. I thought it was going

:25:10. > :25:38.to topple in. No, stays two over. The familiar figure of Karrie Webb.

:25:39. > :25:43.What a good player she's been for 15 years or more, Maureen. She started

:25:44. > :25:51.very young. And she's kept that rhythm going for umpteen Victor

:25:52. > :25:58.Ruiz. Seven time major winner. The first time I saw her was here in

:25:59. > :26:03.1995 when she arrived at the Duke's Course and properly won this title

:26:04. > :26:08.three times. -- victories. That's the familiar Crouch of Michelle Wie.

:26:09. > :26:16.As if she is auditioning for the female role of the hunchback of

:26:17. > :26:25.Notre Dame. I'm sure there is an easier way to do it. But she reckons

:26:26. > :26:27.that's the way. It don't matter what you do, as long as you get it in the

:26:28. > :26:45.hole, boy. Very good scoring on this

:26:46. > :26:51.opening-day. Play started around 6am this morning. It is a long day. The

:26:52. > :26:54.last game goes off at 4:30pm. It's a long day for the officials, players

:26:55. > :26:59.and caddies. Mostly the officials and all the ones who busy themselves

:27:00. > :27:09.with scoring, marshalling and one thing and another. First to putt is

:27:10. > :27:19.Wessberg. Little movement from the left. They are having to get a

:27:20. > :27:26.wriggle on. The official out with the old watch.

:27:27. > :27:30.Well, we've had a little bit of a shower in the last hour, so, Ken,

:27:31. > :27:38.has that slowed up the cause markedly or not? -- the course.

:27:39. > :27:44.Karrie Webb pitching over to the 12th green, over the water. This

:27:45. > :27:49.hole can be played a number of ways depending on which tee is used and

:27:50. > :27:51.that is a cracking shot. It needed a bit of stop. Still a very nice shot

:27:52. > :28:09.from Karrie Webb. Well, if anybody should know these

:28:10. > :28:12.greens, its Charley Hull, Ken. A nice crowd out watching. Absolutely

:28:13. > :28:17.right, there is a bit of moisture, quite a heavy shower came down about

:28:18. > :28:21.15 minutes ago. It has stopped. There is a big slap on the greens,

:28:22. > :28:31.lots of movement from right to left. -- big slope on the green.

:28:32. > :28:39.That was a beautiful effort. Very nice indeed by Charley Hull. Got off

:28:40. > :28:43.to a hot start with a couple of birdies on the first three holes,

:28:44. > :28:52.dropped one at the last. Tidy nine of 36. This is going to be. I was

:28:53. > :28:59.with Lydia Ko when she heard that she was playing with Charley and she

:29:00. > :29:05.said "I knew I would get Charley in the draw. She was delighted. These

:29:06. > :29:10.two had a big tussle for the first major title of the year with Charley

:29:11. > :29:15.being edged out. Lydia Ko should have got a bit of help from her

:29:16. > :29:24.playing partner, a bit of movement from the left and a reasonable

:29:25. > :29:27.amount of pace. Amassed six feet down the slope, into the little

:29:28. > :29:33.valley. She has a gorgeous touch, she really has. -- the last six

:29:34. > :29:40.feet. A bit feeble. All that build-up,

:29:41. > :29:48.Ken, and they let you down. I know the feeling. It's a long race. She

:29:49. > :29:54.has got a nice touch. Nice, nice touch.

:29:55. > :30:02.Up ahead to the 13th, Shanshan Feng. I think this woman's one of the most

:30:03. > :30:08.remarkable players I've ever seen in my life in the world of golf. She

:30:09. > :30:14.doesn't look very exciting at all. She just quietly plots, keeps the

:30:15. > :30:18.same rhythm, she's almost relentless in finding the greens, holing the

:30:19. > :30:26.putts, not making any mistakes. Quite remarkable.

:30:27. > :30:43.Back to nine for Wessberg. What you would call a little tester. In her

:30:44. > :30:44.last two tournaments she has been fourth and second. Choosing a good

:30:45. > :31:15.time to run into form. A little bit of marking going on.

:31:16. > :31:28.You see Lydia standing astride the putt. Using the aim point method of

:31:29. > :31:33.having a look at the greens. Using the feet to determine the amount of

:31:34. > :31:39.slope, and all sorts of wizardry goes on after that. Might be a

:31:40. > :31:53.little bit of movement in this one. Well done. Outward nine of 37,

:31:54. > :32:15.1-over par. Charley Hull just a little tap in.

:32:16. > :32:43.And in she goes, and on they go. This is a look at the 9th from the

:32:44. > :32:47.air. The following three ball, most players playing a 3-wood or 5-wood

:32:48. > :32:53.for the longer hitters to the launch pad. Michelle Wie has gone something

:32:54. > :32:58.longer and has had a mis-judgement because she has gone down into the

:32:59. > :33:03.valley. You don't want to go down there, you can get some scrappy lies

:33:04. > :33:08.down there. That tree to the left. They have the tee up so they can

:33:09. > :33:14.drive to the end of the fairway. 450 yards from the back tee. They are

:33:15. > :33:15.playing this very short and second shot, which looks inviting across

:33:16. > :34:00.the valley. This is one of the things I love

:34:01. > :34:05.about this game. You have Lexi Thompson, almost six feet tall. And

:34:06. > :34:18.Marie Miyazato, much shorter. But they

:34:19. > :34:29.both play extraordinarily successfully.

:34:30. > :34:43.Pushed it. That's not good. Saved by the bunker. Interesting to me to see

:34:44. > :34:49.how the women's game has changed. A fewer years ago, more of them were

:34:50. > :34:54.swingers, did it with balance and timing. But over the last ten years

:34:55. > :34:59.or so a few players waggle it. They are more aggressive with the

:35:00. > :35:05.clubhead. She has found a good spot. They trimmed all this down. This

:35:06. > :35:08.used to be rough ground down here. It has all been cleaned up, tidied

:35:09. > :35:24.up. She could almost throw it on. It doesn't look like quite such a

:35:25. > :35:32.good decision now. But you weigh up the percentages, and she thought the

:35:33. > :35:38.possibility of getting a good lie was high. She's found a way of

:35:39. > :35:41.getting down in two possibly. Charley Hull, watch this for

:35:42. > :35:51.somebody who actually attacks the ball. Boom. You didn't see many

:35:52. > :35:57.women play that way years ago. She really gets her hands on the

:35:58. > :36:06.clubhead, gives it a good old smack. She's fun to watch.

:36:07. > :36:16.Just a placement tee shot required at the 10th, 344 yards, straight

:36:17. > :36:20.ahead par-4. 240 might be the widest part of the fairway. Two bunkers up

:36:21. > :36:30.the right. Certainly a birdie opportunity. This is a real... Some

:36:31. > :36:34.of these girls are only tiny little tots and they have to swing slowly.

:36:35. > :36:39.And the slower you swing the more careful you have to be coming you

:36:40. > :36:42.have to keep the rhythm going. Wide and slow and sweeping the ball away

:36:43. > :36:50.instead of hitting the ball. Sweeping right through. I always

:36:51. > :36:55.enjoyed watching... I said to many men, you learn far more watching

:36:56. > :36:58.good women play golf than you would watching the likes of Tiger Woods,

:36:59. > :37:08.Spieth and McIlroy, because you'll never play like that. You can get

:37:09. > :37:20.the art of timing from these women. Feng on 13. Birdie at six of seven

:37:21. > :37:24.of the last holes. She started off in a rather pedestrian manner with a

:37:25. > :37:30.handful of pars, after she was very nearly late on to the first tee.

:37:31. > :37:37.Then she really put the afterburners on. Here is an awkward one. Right

:37:38. > :37:57.foot up, left foot down. Hand and arm s swing it through. Good result.

:37:58. > :38:14.Little tiny one for Feng. Nicely done. She remains one behind.

:38:15. > :38:24.Jutanugarn shooting a very good 65 this morning in ideal conditions.

:38:25. > :38:29.Michelle Wie. Big, wide stance for long putts. Sniffing at the ball.

:38:30. > :38:37.Look where she is aiming, up to the bank on the right. A huge swing.

:38:38. > :38:53.Very low, steady, good pace. STUDIO: That's the scene as we look

:38:54. > :39:00.over the Bedfordshire countryside. Very close to Milton Keynes, about

:39:01. > :39:05.50 miles north of London. Jutanugarn safely in the clubhouse, waiting to

:39:06. > :39:09.see if Shanshan Feng of China can match the 7-under par, going very

:39:10. > :39:18.well. The woman who will be 27 the day of The Open ceremony next week

:39:19. > :39:21.in Rio. Very excited, as many of these women are, about going to

:39:22. > :39:27.represent their country in the Olympic Games. Teresa Lu in that

:39:28. > :39:31.group at 3-under. Karrie Webb also going very well. Can't believe it's

:39:32. > :39:39.21 years since she took this place by storm on the Duke's course. This

:39:40. > :39:43.fearless young woman coming through from Australia. This is the place

:39:44. > :39:54.that launched her career all those years ago. It seems like yesterday.

:39:55. > :40:04.Perfect position for Wessberg off the 10th tee. Slap bang in the

:40:05. > :40:10.middle. Ken, flag pretty central today. Essential at the back, yes.

:40:11. > :40:16.Played a long way back. -- Central at the back. Hardly a breath of wind

:40:17. > :40:39.at the moment. Remember watching Vesper gapped the

:40:40. > :40:42.Championship in Saint Andrews. She finished seventh there. -- watching

:40:43. > :41:24.Vesper -- Wessberg at. She really is as calm as she looks,

:41:25. > :41:29.Peter. It's interesting. A fascinating story. Her family taking

:41:30. > :41:35.the opportunity to have the teaching scholarship in New Zealand. Taking

:41:36. > :41:39.citizenship, learning to play golf, entering the New Zealand. It's just

:41:40. > :41:49.a great story. Now Charley Hull. Get inside that one. 114. Good cuff,

:41:50. > :41:59.coming in high. The line looks not bad. Oh, Kenny. The adrenaline was

:42:00. > :42:09.flowing there, Kenneth, I think. Yes, over aggressive, I think. Calm

:42:10. > :42:21.it down a bit. Looking at the contact here. You see the divot fly

:42:22. > :42:27.after the ball was taken. Quite a lot of turf taken. Green keepers

:42:28. > :42:32.must cry themselves to sleep at night after preparing it for years

:42:33. > :42:40.and years, to be ripped to pieces. But they do a great job. Miyazato

:42:41. > :42:48.with a par putt at the 9th. She remains 1-over.

:42:49. > :42:53.Always looks busy, like she has somewhere to go, a bus to catch or

:42:54. > :43:04.something. Karrie Webb. Hardly any divot at all. It clipped

:43:05. > :43:10.off the top. Might stop a bit too quick. Interesting.

:43:11. > :43:27.Michelle Wie, Jack Nicklaus style of putting, works. I walked a couple of

:43:28. > :43:30.holes with her in practice and she was doing the table top ironing

:43:31. > :43:35.board style. Looking at her today, she's mostly doing this, she seems

:43:36. > :43:44.to change between the two depending on her mood. If it works, putting is

:43:45. > :43:52.a game within a game. But we are. -- but there we are. From the back of

:43:53. > :43:59.the green. A little bit too enthusiastic with the short pitch

:44:00. > :44:03.in. Just settled down in the grass. It's awkward with the green running

:44:04. > :44:10.away. It's hard to get the right contact on the ball. Decide what you

:44:11. > :44:15.want to play and commit to it. You could sort of scuff it out and let

:44:16. > :44:21.it run. Awkward. The grass is just an inch long but it has settled

:44:22. > :44:27.down. You don't want to be dropping a shot after a good tee shot like

:44:28. > :44:35.that, Ken. A shortish iron in. She's opening the face. It's a bold shot,

:44:36. > :44:42.I fancy. It's looking quite cavalier to me at the moment. Cavalier! Lots

:44:43. > :44:51.of swishing. This is awkward. Anything within four feet is a

:44:52. > :44:55.beauty. Quick stab. She's got away with it. APPLAUSE

:44:56. > :45:15.Very unlucky there. The ball nestling down. A little

:45:16. > :45:22.break of the wrist and you can see the ball almost going straight up.

:45:23. > :45:26.Still only level with the club face. Extraordinary that, this very slow

:45:27. > :45:28.motion. You wonder how the club doesn't hit the ball two or three

:45:29. > :45:38.times. Just a little film of moisture on

:45:39. > :45:42.the greens at the moment. It slows it down a fraction meaning the ball

:45:43. > :45:50.doesn't break as much, but it's actually a little bit easier to get

:45:51. > :45:52.the ball to roll more smoothly. Should have a little bit of movement

:45:53. > :46:26.from the right. She has left herself one of those

:46:27. > :46:32.you really don't like all that much. Karrie Webb after a very nice

:46:33. > :46:42.approach shot in here at 13. Down the slope. A couple of little

:46:43. > :46:55.switchbacks. That was a good putt. Left it below the hole.

:46:56. > :47:03.Isn't that lovely? Magnificent selection of trees, all sorts.

:47:04. > :47:12.Wildlife, a few brown squirrels about. All sorts of stuff. Lydia Ko.

:47:13. > :47:26.Birdie putts, this to get back to level par.

:47:27. > :47:35.Dribbled away. So a chance missed really. I thought she might pot that

:47:36. > :47:53.one. In search of her third major title.

:47:54. > :47:58.As won one already this year. As we go quickly to Karrie Webb.

:47:59. > :48:09.Well holed. Karrie Webb unfortunately has just missed out on

:48:10. > :48:18.the Olympic trip. Very sad news to a lot of us. It was very much her

:48:19. > :48:23.dream to be there. But Minjee Lee just edged out Karrie Webb and

:48:24. > :48:30.Rebecca Artis at the death. This is the tester that Wessberg has left

:48:31. > :48:45.herself. Putts with the shaft of the putter almost vertical. Dead centre.

:48:46. > :48:51.Over the years her putter has had some wonderful shapes and sizes. All

:48:52. > :48:59.sorts of blade putters, lumpy ones, round ones, flat ones. Anything to

:49:00. > :49:03.try to get the ball in the hole. Long putter, short putter. I

:49:04. > :49:10.remember a fellow called Eduardo Blasi from Argentina who had a

:49:11. > :49:17.putter around 14 inches long, a wide stance, putting one-handed. Didn't

:49:18. > :49:24.last long, ended up quietly in a home somewhere. I don't think any of

:49:25. > :49:30.these young nerves will be in a home for quite some time. It's a funny

:49:31. > :49:35.old game. It can strike you down, this dam game of golf. It's so

:49:36. > :49:40.pedestrian, you get so much time to think. You ponder and wonder, can I

:49:41. > :49:46.get better? Inevitably you get worse. Charley Hull finishing off

:49:47. > :49:57.nicely. Good chip and putt from the back of the green. 1-under.

:49:58. > :50:05.Peter, you must have had some fun when you were building this golf

:50:06. > :50:10.course. Did you discover anything of interest when you were moving trees

:50:11. > :50:16.must not a few old Army dug outs. I think I'm correct in saying they

:50:17. > :50:22.used to store ammunition here. It was absolute dense forest,

:50:23. > :50:25.rhododendrons, ferns and trees. I still see Clive Clarke hacking his

:50:26. > :50:29.way through. It was amazing to be asked by the family to come and do

:50:30. > :50:36.the third course here. Very proud of it. It's lovely. Mind you, you would

:50:37. > :50:42.have to be a complete fool to make a mess of a course in land like this.

:50:43. > :50:46.You can just see a couple of amateur names on that scoreboard as the

:50:47. > :50:56.scores roll through. Seven amateurs playing this week for the Smith

:50:57. > :51:03.salver. The third of the par threes. Easy to come up short on this one.

:51:04. > :51:11.It has boxed a few players today. -- it has foxed. It's a big green that

:51:12. > :51:14.tilts from back to front. You can throw the ball in there like playing

:51:15. > :51:20.darts, with bunkers on either side. You have to be up. If you go to the

:51:21. > :51:22.back of the green, when they are running fast, it's not easy to two

:51:23. > :51:42.putt. We don't know what they all played

:51:43. > :51:49.off the tee there, but Michelle Wie has a bit of a low rookie one to try

:51:50. > :52:02.and execute. She hits into the canopy of the tree but gets away

:52:03. > :52:10.with it. -- low hooking one. Miyazato's ball already on the

:52:11. > :52:16.green. She was a wunderkinder at 14 or 15 years of age, pushed on by her

:52:17. > :52:19.parents. A little bit too early really, but settling down into the

:52:20. > :52:31.world of golf for the last seven or eight years. The caddies in women's

:52:32. > :52:35.golf, do you think they take more of an interest... Not interest, that's

:52:36. > :52:39.the wrong word. But do you think they get involved more than the

:52:40. > :52:45.caddies on the men's Tour? I think they may be do, Peter. Seem to be

:52:46. > :52:54.more of them lining up the players and being part of it. They seem to

:52:55. > :52:58.be more actively engaged. Trying to keep the clubface open, keep the

:52:59. > :53:02.ball on line and she has done it very well indeed. Cracking shot.

:53:03. > :53:06.APPLAUSE Lexi Thompson is fun to watch. She

:53:07. > :53:07.really manoeuvres the ball and does stuff you don't see many of them

:53:08. > :53:25.doing. Lydia Ko, just watch this backswing.

:53:26. > :53:38.See the little too early bit, pushing it down, and it might go off

:53:39. > :53:47.the fairway. -- the little too twirly bit. It's mindful of Inbee

:53:48. > :53:53.Park's swing. She's injured this week. Not textbook stuff from Lydia

:53:54. > :53:57.Ko, but neither was Lee Trevino and they are both geniuses in their way

:53:58. > :54:02.in their own life span and area in the world of golf. Don't change it.

:54:03. > :54:13.Stick with what you do best. Learn how to use it. Some very good

:54:14. > :54:20.scoring today. Ideal weather. We've had a little drop of rain but it has

:54:21. > :54:24.been a slight stirring in the trees. Only a light breeze that hasn't

:54:25. > :54:32.developed into any sort of wind. Charley Hull at the 11th, the par-5.

:54:33. > :54:45.That is a fizzer, right down the middle. Good job there is some

:54:46. > :54:54.wetness in the ground otherwise it was in the bunker. Otherwise good.

:54:55. > :55:05.Back a hole to the 10th. The flag is 25 yards on today.

:55:06. > :55:15.The greens here on the Marquess course are quite segmented. To get

:55:16. > :55:20.really close to the flight you have to have pinpoint accuracy with your

:55:21. > :55:26.irons. Very easy to get on the wrong side of the slope and be swept away

:55:27. > :55:45.into 3-putt distance. -- to get really close to the flag.

:55:46. > :55:59.Michelle Wie's putt is on the way. Oh no.

:56:00. > :56:06.This is awkward. But I think she can get it up and forward OK. A bit

:56:07. > :56:17.close to the bank. Stamp it out and she has played it well. It's a

:56:18. > :56:21.runner. Awkward shot. Nice to see a few amateurs playing, Maureen. It

:56:22. > :56:24.has always been a great tradition in this Championship, but they have

:56:25. > :56:28.earned their way into it. They are not here just because we like them.

:56:29. > :56:36.I think there are seven in the field. The Smith salver will be very

:56:37. > :56:45.keenly contested. Lydia Ko has run behind the trees. She can create a

:56:46. > :56:50.shot if she has a good lie. She could squirt one round. Looks like

:56:51. > :56:55.she will play out to the left and then pitch up. She just has to keep

:56:56. > :57:07.it under the branches. The lie is pretty good considering the poor

:57:08. > :57:13.lies around. She's 295, so if she moves out 95, she has 200 to the

:57:14. > :57:17.flight. That's what you want to do. She could shunt it out, and could

:57:18. > :57:21.get further if she could be ambitious. Looks like she could be

:57:22. > :57:27.ambitious. Oh no she's not. They punched to the left side. Not too

:57:28. > :57:34.much! The thing is, the great players seemed to make smallish

:57:35. > :57:40.errors, misses the fairway, but it's a par-5. It's not always the great

:57:41. > :57:47.shots that win things. It's those who make the fewest mistakes.

:57:48. > :57:53.Everybody talks about flamboyant two irons, fizzing to the hole. But it's

:57:54. > :57:58.the silly mistakes. When you add it up on Sunday night you might have

:57:59. > :58:06.missed out by two or three. Charley Hull to thump it close. 264. That's

:58:07. > :58:15.a shame, just clipped a branch. It was motoring, but not a bad layup.

:58:16. > :58:19.Excellent layup as it happens. We are looking at the course from on

:58:20. > :58:23.high and it looks like a treat. You are down there walking through the

:58:24. > :58:28.trees. Wonderful to have character on either side of the fairways. It's

:58:29. > :58:33.absolutely exquisite. You couldn't find a nicer inland course.

:58:34. > :58:40.Everything you need. I was about Blairgowrie Rosemont last week. It

:58:41. > :58:52.was another course like this, oozing class and charm. -- I was up at.

:58:53. > :58:58.Another good tee shot from Wessberg. Deciding not to go for it. Not the

:58:59. > :59:10.most accurate of layups. Stayed on the fairway but only just, Ken.

:59:11. > :59:16.Beautifully presented, the wavy sides of the fairways. At the end

:59:17. > :59:21.you find a green like this, beautifully prepared. Miyazato for

:59:22. > :59:29.birdie, long dish and slowish putt. It's got the speed. Oh! Up a drain

:59:30. > :59:35.pipe, could have gone a few feet past, but it disappeared. The little

:59:36. > :59:47.totty goes on smiling. Can Karrie Webb rescue a par from

:59:48. > :59:53.that lie in the bunker? It's downhill. It's got a turn but it's

:59:54. > :00:10.too high. Slightly mis-hit tee shot, slightly

:00:11. > :00:16.under club, one or t'other has cost the shot there. Lydia Ko, still a

:00:17. > :00:26.few yards to go. Not the widest of targets. Going around the oak tree.

:00:27. > :00:31.These rescues are very handy. Looked good, Ken, looked online. She

:00:32. > :00:38.doesn't want it again, I can tell you that, Peter. It's a dandy! What

:00:39. > :00:47.a shot. Wonderful. Go back 100 years and that thing is called a baffy.

:00:48. > :00:56.The forward, 5-wood, a baffler. Then the rescue clubs that do the job.

:00:57. > :01:10.Lexi, birdiey, well done, had putting issues over the years and

:01:11. > :01:15.has done work with Dave Stockton. Meanwhile, at the 11th. See how you

:01:16. > :01:21.cut fair away, you go into the rough and you come out to give it, it is

:01:22. > :01:25.so easy to make a straight line, which makes it very boring, make a

:01:26. > :01:30.little manoeuvre with the tractor and trailers and the cutters and you

:01:31. > :01:41.can make a dull bit of ground look attractive. Plant a bit of gorse, a

:01:42. > :01:47.few bumps. You old romantic Peter. It is, I

:01:48. > :01:51.think, as I said at the beginning Henry Longhurst said aren't we lucky

:01:52. > :01:56.golf takes us to so many beautiful places? You can have fine stadiums

:01:57. > :01:59.and arenas and the rest of it, but there is only a limited view here,

:02:00. > :02:06.everywhere you look there is is a bit of magic, a bit of wildlife,

:02:07. > :02:14.colour, noise, sounds, birdie, it is glorious.

:02:15. > :02:21.-- birds. That style. 844 yards left. Bit of a little ridge.

:02:22. > :02:32.Is that, did that sound OK? Yes, perfect distance.

:02:33. > :02:36.The flag cut a little cape that comes into the green, a little short

:02:37. > :02:40.and it will dig in the bank and long and it will skid on, a good break

:02:41. > :02:51.here for Charlie, having clipped the pine trees it could have gone

:02:52. > :02:59.anywhere. 80 yards. And a good lay out yard damage. You can get the

:03:00. > :03:04.grip on the second bounce. Nips it up, she is a great divot

:03:05. > :03:17.taker. Stop. Oh, it didn't, didn't just, ran on

:03:18. > :03:21.an extra eight feet. What is that ghen look at the size of the divot.

:03:22. > :03:27.She crunches down on the back of the club. It looks as if she must

:03:28. > :03:31.generate spin. You know people talk about controlling the spin, you

:03:32. > :03:36.can't always, the ball doesn't always do what you hope it is going

:03:37. > :03:39.to do. Those that pretend, oh great control, the spin. No, you hit it

:03:40. > :03:44.the best you could and you hope for the best.

:03:45. > :03:53.Sometimes it spins too much and sometimes it stops beautifully. And

:03:54. > :03:58.sometimes it doesn't stop at all. Back on the tee, Thompson. Now this

:03:59. > :04:07.is certainly within her compass to get up here in two.

:04:08. > :04:14.She didn't look after it. She didn't need to. Big leap forward there,

:04:15. > :04:27.Maureen that, got a good chase on. Just hurrying the camera crew out of

:04:34. > :04:38.15th. Big headed driver. Sweeps it off the top of the tee peg. Away it

:04:39. > :04:42.goes. See that one-stops done dead, the

:04:43. > :04:50.other went on 40 yards. Luck of the draw.

:04:51. > :04:53.Karrie Webb at the is ath. -- 15th. Big headed driver. Sweeps it off the

:04:54. > :04:56.top of the tee peg. Away it goes. See that one-stops done dead, the

:04:57. > :04:57.other went on 40 yards. Luck of the draw.

:04:58. > :05:00.Good crowds. Loads of buses and Sharia banks whatever you called

:05:01. > :05:07.them. We have had the ladies group up from Surrey, bus loads of them

:05:08. > :05:14.coming up to enjoy this great event. Great view there of the high hands

:05:15. > :05:19.and the vertical putter shaft. The idea of that is to headache the

:05:20. > :05:24.putter shaft an extension of your arm, just not quite reading the

:05:25. > :05:38.break in there, fors we burring, but that will be a safe par O --

:05:39. > :05:44.Wessberg. One birdie. 12th hole in front of them is clear,

:05:45. > :05:48.there is known on it, so they will have to get a gallop on. They are

:05:49. > :05:54.backing up. I can see them waiting to play up. Yes, this group are on

:05:55. > :05:58.the slow side, they will have to kick on or they might get a nasty

:05:59. > :06:02.fright at the end of the round. That is the plague of golf these days.

:06:03. > :06:11.You watch over the next three days it is easy to see why they take so

:06:12. > :06:15.long. Well, the Championship organisersers

:06:16. > :06:20.have stated they will be hot on the timings here, and when a group loses

:06:21. > :06:25.the their starting time difference, which is 11 minute, they lose that,

:06:26. > :06:30.they will be put on the clock, they will be told, and when they get a

:06:31. > :06:33.bad time, a second bad time that is it. It is a shot penalty. They have

:06:34. > :06:39.been saying that for 50 years Maureen. Yes, but... They only been

:06:40. > :06:45.please the poor young assistant from Rochdale. Not strictly true Peter.

:06:46. > :06:50.It is totally true. Dear old pernard Langer he should have been penalised

:06:51. > :06:53.for 25 years, eight shots a round. But no, he puts bums on seats.

:06:54. > :07:10.-- Bernard. These these yardage charts and

:07:11. > :07:16.books, they look, they throw bits of stuff in the air strike and they

:07:17. > :07:21.consult. Do you think it is too much of a a science rather then an art.

:07:22. > :07:28.Some of the greatest players in the world young by eye and feel and

:07:29. > :07:37.touch. Touch. Another birdie opportunity for Ko. Ko: A good angle

:07:38. > :07:41.Peter, up the slope. No.

:07:42. > :07:52.Not got the range just yet. Well, after the errant tee shot it

:07:53. > :07:57.would have been a bit of a steal to mark a birdie down, but I suppose

:07:58. > :08:06.this is what world number ones tend to do more often than anybody else.

:08:07. > :08:27.Now Karrie, Charlie I should say. Yes. Well done.

:08:28. > :08:33.So Lexi Thompson has the been waiting behind that group for the

:08:34. > :08:41.green to clear. That is a huge drive, Maureen isn't it. We saw it

:08:42. > :08:45.leap down the fairway. Thompson has got the three wood out.

:08:46. > :08:47.It don't even look like a three wood actually.

:08:48. > :08:52.Straight at the sign behind the green, just to the right of the

:08:53. > :08:57.flag. Only what, 15 yards gap? That sort of thing.

:08:58. > :09:04.So one good clean very straight hit is needed here.

:09:05. > :09:08.Looked good. Left, was good when it left here, and it is good when it

:09:09. > :09:11.has arrived. That is a cracking shot.

:09:12. > :09:25.Oh wunderbar. Superb. Cracking shot from the former US

:09:26. > :09:29.Open champion, Lexi Thompson, she is making her way not quite on the

:09:30. > :09:34.front-page of this leaderboard as yet. It is Shanshan Feng that has

:09:35. > :09:40.been making the best progress, 6-under through 14 and the other

:09:41. > :09:46.player making progress on the first page, 4-under through seven, Mirim o

:09:47. > :09:51.Lee of South Korea, one of 30 South Korean players in the top 50.

:09:52. > :09:59.Extraordinary success over the last 15 years or so since the the amazing

:10:00. > :10:05.Siri Pak came on the scene, so many have tried to follow and have

:10:06. > :10:10.succeeded in their following her into professional ranks. There is

:10:11. > :10:14.mow Martin. Good to see her featuring, she won at royal berk

:10:15. > :10:20.dale with that stunning eagle at the 72nd hole to nick it.

:10:21. > :10:24.And there is Melissa Reid. 1-under through 14. Eventual ghul that

:10:25. > :10:32.group. -- Charley Hull in that group. Leona Maguire one of the

:10:33. > :10:36.amateur, she is one of the victorious Curtis Cup players from

:10:37. > :10:41.Great Britain and Ireland. They won the cup back for only the eighth

:10:42. > :10:49.time since the 1930s, great stuff against the Americans last month. So

:10:50. > :10:56.that is how it looks on day one. At the moment, 55 women-under par. It

:10:57. > :11:00.is a leavely setting here, Woburn Abbey.

:11:01. > :11:06.-- lovely setting here. Fabulous setting.

:11:07. > :11:10.And so many lovely sights and sounds round this lovely part of the

:11:11. > :11:18.country. Just north of London. And Peter, I know this is place you know

:11:19. > :11:23.very well. Our dear old colleague Alex was part and parcel of this

:11:24. > :11:31.wonderful landscape. It is a lovely setting here, Woburn Abbey.

:11:32. > :11:34.Fabulous setting. And so many lovely sights and sounds

:11:35. > :11:40.round, this lovely part of the country. Just north of London. And

:11:41. > :11:51.Peter, I know this is a place that you know very well. Charley

:11:52. > :11:57.Hull unleashing one at this 12th hole, trying to find the island

:11:58. > :12:07.fairway. You are aiming to get your tee shot

:12:08. > :12:11.to finish between 20-240 yards. Michelle Wie 4-over par, won the US

:12:12. > :12:17.Open a couple of years ago, since then, all sorts of problems injury

:12:18. > :12:18.again, has played its part. A struggle today, he seems to have

:12:19. > :12:51.lost her way again. It is entirely in Bedfordshire. A

:12:52. > :12:58.bit of exciting chat for you there. I think the border is probably on

:12:59. > :13:05.the A a 5, just to the east of here. Sometimes I bore mice, actually.

:13:06. > :13:09.-- myself actually. Well, here we are back on 11 and those two mighty

:13:10. > :13:16.blows from Lexi Thompson are shortly going to give her a very makeable

:13:17. > :13:20.eagle putt. You are right, Michelle Wie has had

:13:21. > :13:26.really, you know a disappointing career for one with so much promise

:13:27. > :13:31.and talent. But, A lot is down to injury, she had knee problems then

:13:32. > :13:34.she came through and had that renaissance and delivered the major

:13:35. > :13:39.Championship but everything thought she was going to, in 2014, she had

:13:40. > :13:46.neck problems since then, it has been a bit of a struggle. This one

:13:47. > :13:50.low. Again, she is sort of systematic of

:13:51. > :13:54.a lot of very young talents, come on the scene very young and perhaps

:13:55. > :13:59.don't stay the course, some of them have great careers but are retired

:14:00. > :14:05.by the age of 30. Karrie Webb is different. 41 now. She has been

:14:06. > :14:16.competing at the highest level for a long, long time.

:14:17. > :14:23.Talking early about seven and Cho who retired after winning major

:14:24. > :14:27.after major. Three tee shots in decent position on this 12th hole,

:14:28. > :14:31.sometimes the tee is moved up and you can have a pop at the green.

:14:32. > :14:39.Even getting it on to this little almost an island fairway.

:14:40. > :14:43.Peninsula sticks out. A very tricky pin. Seven on seven from the right,

:14:44. > :14:49.but awkward spot tieded to a ridge that runs through the green. 73

:14:50. > :14:55.yards left for Linda. A bang behind it she could use, a breeze helping.

:14:56. > :14:57.This slightly soggy fairway doesn't make the pitches anyisier. Over the

:14:58. > :15:01.water. -- any easier. Use the slope behind,

:15:02. > :15:22.it is tricky. Not much landing area. Well I am not sure that was as

:15:23. > :15:34.intended, but it has worked out extremely well. I may be be doing

:15:35. > :15:43.her a disservice. Hard to tell. It is 66 yards. Wanting the lady, they

:15:44. > :15:47.can't hit it as hard as a man so they tend to get that firmer first

:15:48. > :15:54.bounce. So going straight at this, the pin

:15:55. > :16:13.is on about five yards. 66 yards, almost a little close.

:16:14. > :16:24.Nicely judged. Snuffling away. Hay fever or a cold. Cold? A yard short

:16:25. > :16:33.and that was struggling to get over the water.

:16:34. > :16:39.As Peter says she gouges out an enormous divot. She has 65 and this

:16:40. > :16:43.is a soggy old fairway. Does that make you nervous? Makes

:16:44. > :16:53.you a little nervous. Come on Charlie.

:16:54. > :17:00.Three good tee shot, three good second shots.

:17:01. > :17:05.She said she was feeling the pressure, you get the home support,

:17:06. > :17:09.it can lift you, she was filing more pressure than usual, wasn't

:17:10. > :17:19.necessarily looking forward to all the home support. Eagle chance for

:17:20. > :17:25.Lexi Thompson. Stay up, stay up. That was comfortable, easy as birdie

:17:26. > :17:28.as you would want to see. Two mighty blow, two putts and Lexi Thompson

:17:29. > :17:40.gets it back to level par. Back to back birdies now.

:17:41. > :17:45.And here is Liz Young. Expecting a baby in a couple of months. Telling

:17:46. > :17:54.me this morning she usually gets tired after about 15. Holes. She is

:17:55. > :18:12.a couple more to do. She hasn't played 18 holes yet this week.

:18:13. > :18:18.Miyazato. Nicely judged. Couple of birdie, couple of bogeys today.

:18:19. > :18:29.No-one in this group setting things alight. Michelle Wie 4-over,

:18:30. > :18:34.Thompson, Miyazato level par. Not much break in that, and with

:18:35. > :18:40.eyes it finds the bottom of the hole.

:18:41. > :18:47.3-under. Good round if progress from the Australian. Remained competitive

:18:48. > :19:12.over so many years. They are waiting for the local hero

:19:13. > :19:17.to nudge this in for a birdie three. Little down the slope.

:19:18. > :19:38.Oh no. No. She is never a player accused of

:19:39. > :19:49.slow play eventual. She gets on with things briskly. A confused face

:19:50. > :19:51.there though. Shanshan Feng, won the European ladies Order of Merit last

:19:52. > :20:20.year. First Chinese player to do so. Very good. Using what they call aim

:20:21. > :20:24.point where you read it with your feet and hold the fingers up. You

:20:25. > :20:40.would have thought had a hair of movement from the right.

:20:41. > :20:47.Right to middle it goes for Lydia Ko. Not too many birdies for her

:20:48. > :20:57.today, only her second. A couple of bogeys.

:20:58. > :21:04.This is the young amateur, the Swedish amateur, 15 years of age.

:21:05. > :21:11.The youngest competitor in the field she is here because she is the

:21:12. > :21:28.British amateur champion, she won that Championship in June. Youngest

:21:29. > :21:29.winner, only turned 15 in March. Fellow country woman for birdie

:21:30. > :22:32.here. Well, disappointing there for the

:22:33. > :22:39.Swede, only a four. Got to take your chances when you can. Because on a

:22:40. > :22:44.course this tree lined, you face a few crises along the way, somewhere

:22:45. > :22:50.or other, dale Reed said she used to like to get a few birdies and tuck

:22:51. > :23:00.them in her back pocket and consider them like a bank account.

:23:01. > :23:07.Most of the really good scores seem to be coming from the morning wave.

:23:08. > :23:11.That was an impressive lily pad. You could put a small dog on them. When

:23:12. > :23:15.they were impored the person showed how impressive they were by standing

:23:16. > :23:21.on them. You can get the huge ones that can take the full weight of a

:23:22. > :23:25.human being or perhaps small child, if you are not feeling particularly

:23:26. > :23:31.brave yourself. Big thick things. Peter is staring

:23:32. > :23:46.at me in a quizzical fashion. He is right to do so.

:23:47. > :23:55.Early days yet but there are 65 plus ties make the weekend. Those numbers

:23:56. > :24:00.include the amateur players so we have 35 or so in red figures at the

:24:01. > :24:04.moment. And there is the spread of the tee

:24:05. > :24:15.shots on this teasing par-4. 12th hole.

:24:16. > :24:18.Never a good idea to miss the prepared surface when you have a

:24:19. > :24:29.short iron in your hand and the flag at the front.

:24:30. > :24:33.Not player that generates a huge amount of spin in any case, so

:24:34. > :24:51.chances are this will be beyond the flag.

:24:52. > :25:02.Plenty of height. Down, down, down... Well, has it stuck? Has it

:25:03. > :25:06.Fred couples ass they said in the business? It has. It has not quite

:25:07. > :25:09.moan down there but has got away with it. I think they probably

:25:10. > :25:11.should have cut that down, that bank, it is just clinging on there

:25:12. > :25:42.for dear life. Go, she say, what has Michelle Wie

:25:43. > :25:44.down? Got away with it. Looks a bit troubled at the moment She looks out

:25:45. > :26:01.of sorts. So Lexi Thompson, again, it is going

:26:02. > :26:05.to be, she is much sharper through the ball but it is going to be

:26:06. > :26:09.difficult to generate the control when the ball lands, because she is

:26:10. > :26:14.just coming out of this longerer grass, the second cut.

:26:15. > :26:16.-- longer grass. There is plenty of green behind the

:26:17. > :26:48.flag. Well, I have to say there were three

:26:49. > :26:53.rather indifferent shots by three top class players. And nothing gets

:26:54. > :27:04.the blood boiling like making a mess of an easy hole. This is Julia

:27:05. > :27:12.Engstrom. A couple of bogeys in a row now. Or

:27:13. > :27:20.will be. We will go back to Lydia Ko, if she can get it out there.

:27:21. > :27:27.David is working on her, she has been a fader, but she is able to get

:27:28. > :27:30.a bit more right-to-left on her now. Little shoot forward. Still doesn't

:27:31. > :27:32.have the distance of the biggest hitters though, but that is not her

:27:33. > :27:52.game. This to join Jutanugarn in the lead.

:27:53. > :28:05.At 7-under. Not enough pace. Feng is playing

:28:06. > :28:11.with the young am Stuening Strom so what an experience for the young we

:28:12. > :28:14.see dish player. Watching golf at the highest calibre at close

:28:15. > :28:21.quarters. -- Swedish. Ai Miyazato did get away

:28:22. > :28:26.with it: A little pitch up, and might even have a birdie.

:28:27. > :28:33.Very nearly did. That would be one against the head. In it will go for

:28:34. > :28:36.a par. I thought they might cut down the

:28:37. > :28:41.grass on that bank so any short, it is only a short hole any way, you

:28:42. > :28:43.shouldn't be punished if you are missing the fairway or missing the

:28:44. > :29:06.green, Miyazato escapes unscathed. Well, that shows the positions of

:29:07. > :29:28.the tee shots there on 13. There was almost a Little Mix up.

:29:29. > :29:44.They thought the ball was theirs. Ko spotted it. That was a fantastic

:29:45. > :29:48.flight. First to play has 163. Been on the front of the green. I have

:29:49. > :29:52.not seen this hollow that is tricky. If you pitch short of the green it

:29:53. > :29:59.will come trickling back to you. Not easy, you can pitch it long and

:30:00. > :30:01.right and it will gather up. 163, probably about six direct. Not

:30:02. > :30:17.much room to land the ball on. You could pitch it eight or nine

:30:18. > :30:46.yard in to right and it should leak all the way to the left.

:30:47. > :30:55.Just midway between the camera tower and the flag would be a good place

:30:56. > :31:02.to land. Chased down. Beautifully played by Wessberg. Wonderful shot.

:31:03. > :31:09.If Lydia Ko had played the wrong ball that it would have been a two

:31:10. > :31:11.shot penalty. Lexi Thompson. Going with the putter from just off the

:31:12. > :31:37.back. This one surely has to go. Thought it was a broken club there,

:31:38. > :31:43.the shaft thrashed into the tree. It has done extremely well. Stay there.

:31:44. > :31:58.Curtailed, followed through from the tree trunk, but nae bad. A little

:31:59. > :32:09.downhill. Shorter than that. Trying to follow her playing partner.

:32:10. > :32:23.One last sniff and then fire it towards the target. Hop down.

:32:24. > :32:29.Just as Ken suggested, slightly more difficult putt she has left them

:32:30. > :32:47.Wessberg's. Tester for Thompson. She is a

:32:48. > :32:53.dangerous woman when she is holing putts. That will really help her

:32:54. > :32:58.momentum. I know it's only a par putt but sometimes those are the

:32:59. > :33:05.biggest in the round. She's one who keeps her glove on while putting.

:33:06. > :33:09.It's not particularly rare. Karrie Webb. Going along very nicely

:33:10. > :33:20.indeed. Slightly out of position here. Urging it on. To no avail.

:33:21. > :33:28.Down to where Juli Inkster was not that long ago.

:33:29. > :33:41.-- Julia Engstrom. Looking down on Shanshan Feng. We welcome to the

:33:42. > :33:54.commentary box, the former winner of the women's open here. Was that the

:33:55. > :34:04.Duke's corset was played it was, in 1990. We have seen some good golf

:34:05. > :34:08.today, Helen. I love the way Shanshan Feng plays. She just gets

:34:09. > :34:16.on with it. With her emotions, you never know what she is shooting.

:34:17. > :34:24.Always a smile on her face and very simple. A little upslope.

:34:25. > :34:27.Considering whether tee shot was, she has every chance of getting down

:34:28. > :34:44.in two. This should just run out. Pretty well played. Talking about

:34:45. > :34:49.players who just get up and get on with it, Charley Hull is one of

:34:50. > :34:56.those. I love it. I think it takes a lot of mental energy to just make a

:34:57. > :35:00.decision and go. One thing we have talked about quite a lot, a lot of

:35:01. > :35:05.discussion between caddies and players in the women's game. It

:35:06. > :35:10.takes a lot of time. When you talk about a spectacle, something you

:35:11. > :35:16.want to watch, perhaps it's not the best. I agree with you. That was one

:35:17. > :35:21.of my big problems when I played, it was taking so long. If you play with

:35:22. > :35:27.more of an instinct, not being so precise. Mental coaches would say,

:35:28. > :35:35.don't hit until you are ready, but I said to one bill, today would be

:35:36. > :35:42.great. A lot of things its field. You need to know what clubs to hit.

:35:43. > :35:56.Let's see if Lydia Ko can feel this one in. Hasn't really got into the

:35:57. > :36:02.run today. Has had a few missed shots, which is very

:36:03. > :36:06.uncharacteristic for her. Perhaps not having quite the feel of these

:36:07. > :36:12.greens yet. Perhaps not quite as quick as some of the surfaces in the

:36:13. > :36:19.US on the LPGA Tour. But she has missed a few that ordinarily she

:36:20. > :36:23.would get in. But she wouldn't ordinarily come out shooting on the

:36:24. > :36:27.first day, she'd normally climbs up and finds herself somewhere at the

:36:28. > :36:53.top on Sunday afternoon. Biding her time. The correct pronunciation,"

:36:54. > :37:03.Vessberg" or Wessberg? Wessberg. I went all Germanic with the V. We

:37:04. > :37:08.were talking about her. A lot of players start looking at the hole.

:37:09. > :37:18.It's a great help, but you have to be firm when you do it. Modelled by

:37:19. > :37:26.Jordan Spieth, looking at the hole when putting. In it goes. Not quite

:37:27. > :37:34.finishing off that beautiful second shot. Nine pars in a row. Just not

:37:35. > :37:38.happening on the greens at the moment. It's quite frustrating

:37:39. > :37:41.sometimes. You give yourself chances, particularly when you see a

:37:42. > :37:52.lot of the field is making some birdies and you are just hanging on,

:37:53. > :37:54.even or 1-over. It's never not that exciting. It's never not that

:37:55. > :38:08.exciting. We had to Lexi Thompson again. Going

:38:09. > :38:11.with the driver here. He doesn't really need the driver, does she? --

:38:12. > :38:25.she doesn't. Again, getting a big shoot forward.

:38:26. > :38:35.It's another 40 yards or so there. Her father Scott is on the bag. It

:38:36. > :38:41.must be an interesting dynamic, having a father caddy for you. We

:38:42. > :38:45.see it quite a lot in women's golf, and sometimes in women's sport,

:38:46. > :38:50.fathers can be dominant figures, parents can. You have to have a

:38:51. > :38:53.close relationship with your caddy. At times the relationship can strain

:38:54. > :38:57.so it be interesting if your father is there. They have grown up with

:38:58. > :39:01.two brothers so they have done a lot of golf together. He has been around

:39:02. > :39:10.as long as I have known her. I don't think he's one of those parents. He

:39:11. > :39:18.has been very supportive. She's the one who's the toughest on herself.

:39:19. > :39:24.It has just gone for Michelle Wie at the moment. Fighting with herself

:39:25. > :39:33.and her swing. We have talked about her injuries. Lydia Ko at the 14th.

:39:34. > :39:40.Playing at 173 yards over the valley.

:39:41. > :39:46.Just got to favour the left of the pin. If you drift to the right it

:39:47. > :40:01.can carry along over the front of the green. The pin is on 11, nine

:40:02. > :40:08.from the left. It's so interesting to watch this group, Kent, don't you

:40:09. > :40:15.think, with Charley Hull being more active and Libya is so calm and

:40:16. > :40:22.cool. That's right. -- and Lydia. She's definitely a cucumber, and the

:40:23. > :40:25.other is more zesty orange. Wessberg is next, has hit a lot of nice shots

:40:26. > :41:09.today but hasn't holed that much. Time for the zesty one. Hit six and

:41:10. > :41:25.it has to be just on the four, cranked up behind it. -- just under

:41:26. > :41:43.four. It would be a massive hit with a 7-iron. I know the wind is across.

:41:44. > :41:55.Asking it to go for her. Oh dear. It's lying OK in there. It's not the

:41:56. > :42:06.worst. Looks as if she was trying to give it that bit extra.

:42:07. > :42:38.Back to the 13th and the tee shots of Michelle Wie and Lexi Thompson.

:42:39. > :42:44.Always going to struggle out of the rough. It's quite noisy at Woburn

:42:45. > :42:47.but they are providing wonderful overhead pictures, the aircraft.

:42:48. > :43:03.Shanshan Feng to get to 7-under par. A great thing for that little

:43:04. > :43:09.Swedish girl to play with Shanshan Feng because she makes it look so

:43:10. > :43:17.easy. A great learning experience, I think. Like you say, 6-under, and

:43:18. > :43:36.it's been a very comfortable 6-under as well.

:43:37. > :43:42.I was so pleased. I read in an interview that she is not very

:43:43. > :43:47.technical, not working too much on her golf swing, more on the shots.

:43:48. > :43:53.So nice to hear that when you hear of so many other players being

:43:54. > :43:57.extremely technical. Doing it by numbers. Lexi Thompson, you can

:43:58. > :44:03.see... You know your swing is basically sound anyway. Beyond that,

:44:04. > :44:07.the feel will bring you good scores. Michelle Wie, you see her with her

:44:08. > :44:15.little set before and you know there is a lot of thought going on at the

:44:16. > :44:19.moment. I thought when she won the US Open, which I love to watch, I

:44:20. > :44:25.thought she played exactly the way she should be playing. Very focused,

:44:26. > :44:29.target oriented. I thought that she was finally getting into it. I don't

:44:30. > :44:33.know if it's all the injuries she's had, but she always seems to be

:44:34. > :44:36.working on something. Like you say, a little too quirky, not the way she

:44:37. > :44:51.should be swinging it. Wessberg, the first to play. Over

:44:52. > :44:53.the back of the green. It will turn a corner a bit from right-to-left

:44:54. > :45:10.and it's downhill. That's so-so. Working hard after her

:45:11. > :45:16.loose tee shot. Long run-off pars might be coming to an end. She could

:45:17. > :45:22.still knock that in. Three pretty wide tee shots here, one short, one

:45:23. > :45:30.left, one long and right. How's it lying in the bunk for Charley Hull,

:45:31. > :45:35.Ken? It's lying pretty nicely. The green is running away from her on a

:45:36. > :45:39.big tilt from left-to-right. Whether caddy is standing, she might have to

:45:40. > :45:43.go a long way left. It's one of those who have to flip in the air

:45:44. > :45:51.and get it to land softly, never easy when the green is above you.

:45:52. > :45:55.She is at that stage in her around where if she could have a nice, tidy

:45:56. > :46:02.finish she would be happy, but with a couple of errors coming in, there

:46:03. > :46:07.is no recovery time today. You see how far left she went. It will feed

:46:08. > :46:26.around. And it runs away on the slope.

:46:27. > :46:49.A stab of the upslope for Karrie Webb. As tidy as always. A little

:46:50. > :46:54.bit uphill. Strong acceleration. Seems to be on an even keel, Lydia

:46:55. > :47:09.Ko. Nothing fazes her too much. One of her great strengths.

:47:10. > :47:17.Very nicely done by Karrie Webb. Keeps a good round going. Remains

:47:18. > :47:21.3-under. A couple of holes from home. She's still one of the most

:47:22. > :47:26.impressive ball strikers I saw when I was out there. She had a shot from

:47:27. > :47:30.pretty much anywhere. I loved to play with her, to learn every single

:47:31. > :47:39.time. Even though she's a lot younger. As we have talked about,

:47:40. > :47:49.she will not be going to the Olympics for Australia. Minjee Lee

:47:50. > :48:00.and sick on how. Justin Rose and Danny Willett will be going for

:48:01. > :48:06.Great Britain along with Charley Hull. What a great thing it would be

:48:07. > :48:11.to call yourself an Olympian. To be in the Olympic village, with all

:48:12. > :48:16.those other athletes. What a save from Charley Hull. That's the way to

:48:17. > :48:21.keep your round going. Things just in danger of getting away from her.

:48:22. > :48:27.A bright start, a couple of birdies in the first three holes, but

:48:28. > :48:35.remains under par despite nonsense. -- despite none since.

:48:36. > :48:49.Maybe now she needs her friends to come out. She says she doesn't want

:48:50. > :48:53.her friend watching. One friend is a golfer and she doesn't mind him

:48:54. > :48:59.watching because he gets it, but the others don't really get it. She

:49:00. > :49:06.doesn't particularly like them watching, but she has plenty of

:49:07. > :49:12.support anyway. Bit of movement from the right. I suppose level but not

:49:13. > :49:29.as fast as it perhaps looks. All the fault of that tee shot which

:49:30. > :49:31.was a real misjudgement. Nine pars in a row comes to an end with a

:49:32. > :50:00.bogey four at the 14th. Cross, how do you say that in

:50:01. > :50:05.Swedish? Cross. That's the same? Yeah, she is cross. Swedish is a

:50:06. > :50:14.very easy language. Not even an accent. Have you tried this aim

:50:15. > :50:17.point, Helen? Henni Zuel was trying to explain it to me but it didn't

:50:18. > :50:25.really make much sense after she did so. It is a little tricky. Don't you

:50:26. > :50:31.think a lot of it is taking wavy instincts. Everything is numbers. I

:50:32. > :50:38.think you feel a lot of it when you putt. -- taking away instincts.

:50:39. > :50:47.Beautiful, just enough pace to hold its line. I'm just always aware that

:50:48. > :50:55.I don't like things that make you take even longer to play than it

:50:56. > :51:00.already does. No, and it certainly does that. Lexi Thompson, a little

:51:01. > :51:07.more swift about things and write in the middle it goes. It's a good run

:51:08. > :51:09.now, three birdies in the last four, it has really turned her around for

:51:10. > :51:46.the better. Having said that, a slight

:51:47. > :52:07.misjudgement, coming up a bit shy. Arie Jutanugarn at the top.

:52:08. > :52:19.It's an international leader to say the least. Good to see Yani Tseng on

:52:20. > :52:24.the leaderboard, former major champion, has been struggling for

:52:25. > :52:30.form recently. Catriona Matthew, 2009 winner got it together on the

:52:31. > :52:42.backline with four birdies to get in decent position.

:52:43. > :52:46.Tee shot a little pill. Don't get too much run pitching into the face

:52:47. > :53:19.of the hill. -- little uphill. Just so solid, isn't she? You would

:53:20. > :53:23.have to be a massive hitter to hit this five in two. The breeze is

:53:24. > :53:29.slightly into them as well. But Charley Hull can give it a mighty

:53:30. > :53:44.tonk if she happens to get a hard bounce. Aiming very low, Ken. Maybe

:53:45. > :53:50.she's going for a cautionary heely, fadey one. Goodness, the glasses

:53:51. > :53:59.came off with the recoil. Gave it everything. Soft bouts. -- soft

:54:00. > :54:05.bounce. If you can't reach for two on the par-5 then you can afford a

:54:06. > :54:14.much more commercial tee shot. We will head back to the 14th and Lexi

:54:15. > :54:19.Thompson. Trying to save it with her hands a little bit. That's good, a

:54:20. > :54:23.feed down the slope, the one Charley Hull was on coming out of the

:54:24. > :54:46.bunker. Has found a good vein of form in this round, Lexi Thompson.

:54:47. > :55:04.Shanshan Feng, she could get a share of the lead going into tomorrow.

:55:05. > :55:25.Otherwise a very easy 66. She's just been going about her business.

:55:26. > :55:34.That's the next wave coming up, the Chinese girls. We talked about the

:55:35. > :55:39.Koreans, 37 in the top 100 is extraordinary. But there will be

:55:40. > :55:46.another wave of Chinese women, inspired by Shanshan Feng. Karrie

:55:47. > :55:56.Webb has judged this beautifully. Such a great role model for so many

:55:57. > :56:06.girls. Took a great chance on many of these girls. It's seen as a real

:56:07. > :56:12.opportunity, becoming a lawyer or doctor, and becoming a golfer for

:56:13. > :56:16.Korean women is an option. Going to the Korean Tour, the Japanese Tour,

:56:17. > :56:25.graduating to the LPGA Tour, and you can make a very good living. Karrie

:56:26. > :56:35.Webb taps in. That's what's so ironic. One of the girls she has

:56:36. > :56:47.helped is one of the girls who took her out of the Olympics! It's not

:56:48. > :57:00.just the Korean golfers, it's the Korean diaspora as well. Many go to

:57:01. > :57:03.Australia, Lydia Ko for example. But native Koreans and Korean exiles all

:57:04. > :57:12.seem to have a really strong work ethic. Talking of which, Michelle

:57:13. > :57:17.Wie. She has been amazing. I'm not really surprised she has had so many

:57:18. > :57:33.injuries. The way she has practised from such a young age.

:57:34. > :57:41.Measured that pretty well. Some swings will last a lifetime, but the

:57:42. > :57:48.strength and clubhead speed Michelle Wie generated when she was younger

:57:49. > :57:53.puts a lot of stress on the body. Engstrom. It's been a rather sad

:57:54. > :58:05.finish to the round for Julia Engstrom. Out in 35, four birdies on

:58:06. > :58:09.the way out, but closing with five bogeys, back in 71. Learning a lot

:58:10. > :58:16.from watching Shanshan Feng. From being in this company. That live

:58:17. > :58:19.experience, there is nothing that compares. People can tell you what

:58:20. > :58:21.to do but when you get the chance to play with some of the best players

:58:22. > :58:28.in the world, there's nothing better. The jersey is on for Lydia

:58:29. > :58:34.Ko. Second longest hole on the course. You realise they don't do

:58:35. > :58:39.many things that much different, they just do it a lot more. I

:58:40. > :58:43.remember playing the first Solheim Cup, I was so scared to play with

:58:44. > :58:47.the Americans, but when you are out there, you realise they are just try

:58:48. > :58:56.to hit on the fairway, get it on the green, and there isn't much more to

:58:57. > :59:00.it. Looking for position here. Charley Hull gives it a smash. You

:59:01. > :59:06.want to leave yourself with your favourite yardage. She fancied she

:59:07. > :59:12.could get pretty close, forget the yardage. On a slight downslope.

:59:13. > :59:20.Sometimes it's the tougher shot of the two, to be closer when the pin

:59:21. > :59:26.is on the edge, a short pin. Leave yourself 100 yards or something like

:59:27. > :59:34.that. Shanshan Feng to hole out. Easy 66, as we have been saying.

:59:35. > :59:51.Bogey free, stress free. And tucked in just one behind the leaders. You

:59:52. > :59:56.could see a little bit of awe in Julia's face. There is an art in the

:59:57. > :00:00.handshake. Perhaps decided she wasn't going to hug people, going

:00:01. > :00:40.for the handshake. You have to remember to hit it. The

:00:41. > :00:46.problem is you have the line covered, but, to hit it on top of

:00:47. > :00:49.it. That is her Achilles heel. He is such a great ball striker, she

:00:50. > :00:59.spends most of the time on her short game.

:01:00. > :01:07.Trying to improve. Lexi Thompson feels like she has been round for a

:01:08. > :01:12.long time. Won the craft Nabisco as it was. Again, it is another example

:01:13. > :01:16.of so many talents come out so young and win big as well. Then it's the

:01:17. > :01:20.case of trying to keep that going. Lee has moved up to 7-under par,

:01:21. > :01:27.after ten holes, what a round she is putting together so far.

:01:28. > :01:33.Alongside Jutanugarn of Thailand who finished with her 65 and Shanshan

:01:34. > :01:38.Feng closing out her 66. A bit further down, you can see Karrie

:01:39. > :01:46.web. Mow Martin, a good start to her round. 3-under par. Again, so many

:01:47. > :01:53.flags of Korea there. Lincicome, 2-under after 15.

:01:54. > :01:57.And Catriona Matthew we mentioned with a round of 70, one of the

:01:58. > :02:01.morning starterser so much good scoring this morning. The wind

:02:02. > :02:06.hasn't got up and there hasn't been the promised rain, just a few

:02:07. > :02:11.showers, perhaps. Melissa Reid alongside Charley Hull, so the

:02:12. > :02:22.English flag being flown there, both 1-under par, Melissa Reid on her

:02:23. > :02:31.final hole. Shadoff just outside the top one00

:02:32. > :02:32.in the world. McBride there as well. And the Irish amateur, 1-under after

:02:33. > :02:55.11 holes. Got 66 yards, green, just above her.

:02:56. > :03:01.That is facing her. Just about far enough back to put a bit of spin on

:03:02. > :03:04.it. By her standards there is a

:03:05. > :03:09.smattering of applause, but she will not be pleased with that.

:03:10. > :03:14.Could you mark it please. It is interesting when you play this golf

:03:15. > :03:17.course, this is not really changed, if you had a morning shift or the

:03:18. > :03:22.afternoon shift because the weather has been similar la, we will see the

:03:23. > :03:27.score, in a links it can be different if you get the morning run

:03:28. > :03:35.or the afternoon run, so it is more fair on the playerses What a run

:03:36. > :03:49.from Mirim Lee. Birdies in the second, fourth, eighth, ninth,

:03:50. > :03:53.tenth. Showing off! Off!? Pig tail problems for a moment, out of the

:03:54. > :03:56.way. Club face open, a little nearer than I would like, particularly

:03:57. > :04:11.difficult with the greens above eye level. You can't see the pin.

:04:12. > :04:18.With the slope behind it is awkward. Looks down with some scorn at the

:04:19. > :04:32.line, and yes, leaving Herr above the hole there. Helen has departed.

:04:33. > :04:38.A puff of Swedish smoke replaced by Maureen. Moo here is is a player we

:04:39. > :04:46.played with many time, Karrie Webb. Final hole.

:04:47. > :04:50.And fine shot, flag up on the right-hand side, and tuck over bun

:04:51. > :04:57.score the player isn't able to see the bottom of the flag when they are

:04:58. > :05:05.sizing up their shot. Lexi Thompson. Can players get close

:05:06. > :05:11.to this green? Lexi Thompson, if she finds the fairway, might be able to

:05:12. > :05:16.get home in two. Gets a good shoot forward. She will be from there

:05:17. > :05:21.Earlier in the year she did a photo shoot for the Olympics in the old

:05:22. > :05:27.garb that the women used to wear 100 years ago, she wasn't able to let

:05:28. > :05:31.rip like that. Whale bone corsets. Mirim Lee, a couple of top five

:05:32. > :05:40.finishes this year, plays in the LPG Tour. A chance here to lead. Well,

:05:41. > :05:45.it is an astonishing round for her, she leads the Women's British Open

:05:46. > :05:47.on her own, and look at that card. Eight birdie, no drop shots, in 11

:05:48. > :06:13.holes. It wasn't the best third shot from

:06:14. > :06:31.Charley Hull. Charley as left herself a bit a

:06:32. > :06:38.slippery one down here. Not one you want to take a bolt at.

:06:39. > :06:56.A birdie, but pretty quick. Well it is freshing to see an

:06:57. > :07:03.attacking player but if you are a supporter it jangle the never ends a

:07:04. > :07:07.bit. -- nerve ends a bit. She has a character testing putt back up the

:07:08. > :07:16.slope to save par. A you get to the end of this golf course the birdie

:07:17. > :07:22.opportunities are fewer and farther between. Lid away seems to take her

:07:23. > :07:32.strokes with a conventional grip and never sure which she going to use

:07:33. > :07:38.for the actual stroke, so back with a conventional grip. Up the slope,

:07:39. > :07:44.slow, slow, slow. Great effort. APPLAUSE

:07:45. > :07:50.I was talking to David, her coach yesterday, I asked him about out of

:07:51. > :07:53.all the players you know, who is the complete package and unerringly he

:07:54. > :08:09.said Lydia. He said she is very very special.

:08:10. > :08:22.It is in your genes when you have such a calm demeanour. Lydia seems

:08:23. > :08:35.to be like that. Never rushes. Wessberger across the slope.

:08:36. > :08:37.In the sob open, she comes in with -- she has had no luck on the greens

:08:38. > :08:53.at all. She will remain 2-over par,

:08:54. > :09:18.Wessberger. So Mirim Lee out in front, 8-under

:09:19. > :09:24.after 11 holes, astonishing round she has got going at the momentment

:09:25. > :09:27.very good run from Jutanugarn on 65 and Stacy Lewis 67, in between them

:09:28. > :09:33.Shanshan Feng has finished with her 66 and Hazel has caught up with her.

:09:34. > :09:37.I have indeed. Congratulations, that 66 looked remarkably simple today.

:09:38. > :09:41.You made it look easy. Especially with the run of four birdies coming

:09:42. > :09:47.in from what the fifth hole there, how would you describe and rate that

:09:48. > :09:50.round for us today? Well, I was overall I did really well, today,

:09:51. > :09:55.and I made four birdies in a row, I think I worked really hard today,

:09:56. > :09:59.because I got a green book, it was my first time to get a green book

:10:00. > :10:04.with the slopes and the numbers on them, I think, this golf course is

:10:05. > :10:07.set up a bit shorter than the normal British Opens, I think it's a birdie

:10:08. > :10:12.challenge, and I really want to read the greens right, and that is why I

:10:13. > :10:18.got the green book, and it was great, I mean it helped me to read a

:10:19. > :10:22.lot more better, so I made the putts and I feel comfortable with the

:10:23. > :10:24.score. It's a different challenge to the links courses that have been

:10:25. > :10:28.thrown at you over the last couple of year, you were close to winning

:10:29. > :10:36.this title a couple of years back at royal berk dale. How high up on your

:10:37. > :10:41.list is this Championship? Well, I have got one major in the pocket so

:10:42. > :10:47.far, but British Open, it is a major of all the Majors, of course, I

:10:48. > :10:50.never mind one more major, and you know, I got really close two years

:10:51. > :10:55.ago and almost thought that maybe I had it, but somebody else played

:10:56. > :10:59.even better, so I missed that. It was kind of a pity, so, you know, I

:11:00. > :11:05.had a very good first round today and I want to maybe have three more

:11:06. > :11:08.days, stick on the same plan, do the same thing and we will see. You are

:11:09. > :11:13.building up to something I know you and the others are excited about.

:11:14. > :11:17.The Olympic game, can you sum up how important and how special it will be

:11:18. > :11:21.to play for your country and become an Olympian in a couple of weeks'

:11:22. > :11:26.time? Well, I mean, when they first announced it golf was back in the

:11:27. > :11:31.Olympics I was, it was 2009 so seven years a and I think time really

:11:32. > :11:35.flied. I still think I don't, I don't think I am even ready for the

:11:36. > :11:40.Olympics to come yet. It is only two more weeks to go. Last week we were

:11:41. > :11:45.playing in the international crown and that was team event. I thought

:11:46. > :11:48.that was great warm up for the Olympics, and this week, also, even

:11:49. > :11:54.though it is not a links-style course this week, but I think we are

:11:55. > :11:58.playing like a links-style golf course for the Olympics so maybe, it

:11:59. > :12:03.will be really windy, so we will get used to the wind here this week, and

:12:04. > :12:07.I am really looking forward for it. And your birthday on the opening

:12:08. > :12:11.ceremony. Not bad. All of your Christmases are coming at the one

:12:12. > :12:17.time. I know, I wish that any could go to to the opening ceremony but I

:12:18. > :12:22.don't think I can make it, because our competition is maybe towards the

:12:23. > :12:27.end of the game, and hopefully I can go to the closing ceremony, and you

:12:28. > :12:31.know, I heard a lot of good stuff about it, because they said it is

:12:32. > :12:35.after the competition are finished and everybody is so excited and that

:12:36. > :12:46.I will party. I am looking forward to it. You might even be wearing a

:12:47. > :12:49.Gold Medal. Well played. She will be there at the closing ceremony

:12:50. > :12:53.partying with Usain Bolt and the gang. Karrie Webb, chance to close

:12:54. > :12:59.with a birdie but a very difficult putt. Yes a wiggle on this one.

:13:00. > :13:04.It is along the top a little ridge, if you get the wrong side of it in

:13:05. > :13:09.the first singsches it drifts further wide.

:13:10. > :13:13.-- six inches. It is really seven years ago they announced that the

:13:14. > :13:17.Olympics where golf was coming back? I mean she is right, and she will

:13:18. > :13:27.find as she gets older time flies faster. It does. He said gloomily.

:13:28. > :13:36.Lynn is the second Chinese player. Lydia Ko on the tracer.

:13:37. > :13:45.-- Lin. Just overcut it slightly.

:13:46. > :14:03.Seem to be struggling with a snuffle today.

:14:04. > :14:10.An interesting point about Shanshan Feng made, they are playing the

:14:11. > :14:12.course short, it is almost a putting competition, there is is a lot,

:14:13. > :14:16.there are a lot of birdies out there today.

:14:17. > :14:20.Yes, it is the first British Open we have had for a while that you could

:14:21. > :14:24.say is played all the way through the air strike not along the ground,

:14:25. > :14:31.in the traditional links style. That is what they are used to. Week in,

:14:32. > :14:40.week out. So, very much at home in this sort of golf course. Michelle

:14:41. > :15:01.Wie, her third to the 15th, this long par-5. 529 yards. Through the

:15:02. > :15:06.routine. Nicely done. I don't know if you and Helen mentioned this, but

:15:07. > :15:11.watching her, she is walking very badly. Limping quite a lot. Hip

:15:12. > :15:16.problems as well as neck problems, so, they are always there a little

:15:17. > :15:29.bit. Mirim Lee, in this incredible round. 8-under after 11.

:15:30. > :15:36.She placed her tee shot there absolutely perfectly, gave herself

:15:37. > :15:38.the best angle into the flag. So brain, body, seefrmgs to be engaged

:15:39. > :15:50.at the moment. -- everything seems. Lexi Thompson hit a big drive down

:15:51. > :15:59.here. I thought she might be able to get home in two.

:16:00. > :16:04.Even if you can, it hard to veer to the left, so leaving herself this

:16:05. > :16:10.pitch but again, you almost don't want to be this close. Coming in for

:16:11. > :16:30.80 or 100 yards, because this is this could be a fiddly one.

:16:31. > :16:34.A lot of elevation changes in this golf course, not a lot of flat

:16:35. > :16:40.shots. But certainly, no wind to affect her

:16:41. > :16:51.here, if you look at the flag, it is limp. Not too many shots get above

:16:52. > :16:53.the level of these trees. And the work in the distance control is

:16:54. > :17:19.pretty good. Most of the tee shots have gone on

:17:20. > :17:23.the 16th and a fair spread, Wessberger is having fun down the

:17:24. > :17:36.left. Lydia Ko licked it off to the right a bit.

:17:37. > :17:54.Might need to go a little bit. Safe enough.

:17:55. > :18:03.Mirim Lee has a putt tow go, a makeable one to go to 9-under after

:18:04. > :18:23.12, which is indecent, she is out on her own.

:18:24. > :18:29.Wessberger, nice on the front of the green, or just right of it. 180 for

:18:30. > :18:39.Charley. Well, not bad, but probably expected

:18:40. > :18:53.better from that range, but birdie chance.

:18:54. > :19:05.What a day we are having, this first round. This lady here, is taking

:19:06. > :19:09.this fine course to pieces, Mirim Lee, she has only had about three or

:19:10. > :19:14.four par, she has another chance of a birdie. A remarkable score goes

:19:15. > :19:23.on, can she keep it going for another half a dozen holes? There is

:19:24. > :19:29.the course's water supply, on the right-hand side. Very natural bit of

:19:30. > :19:36.ground. Lovely lovely. Here we go. Birdie putt, to go 9-under, taking

:19:37. > :19:39.this fine course to pieces, Mirim Lee, she has only had about three or

:19:40. > :19:42.four par, she has another chance of a birdie. A remarkable score goes

:19:43. > :19:45.on, can she keep it going for another half a dozen holes? There is

:19:46. > :19:47.the course's water supply, on the right-hand side. Very natural bit of

:19:48. > :19:50.ground. Lovely lovely. Here we go. Birdie putt, to go 9-under, and she

:19:51. > :19:53.has - oh, fallen to pieces. That is the end of it. That's the end of it!

:19:54. > :19:54.Oh dear, they come and they go. A par, how disgraceful! Leads by

:19:55. > :20:09.one. As usual very good crowds here on

:20:10. > :20:14.the opening day. They will grow bigger and bigger, this has always

:20:15. > :20:19.been a wonderful venue for crowds, I remember some years ago, traffic

:20:20. > :20:24.jams, trying to get in when we used to have Lee Trevino, and some great

:20:25. > :20:28.victories round here. Masters tournaments.s it has always

:20:29. > :20:32.been a tip top place to come and watch golf.

:20:33. > :20:41.There we are. Big old thick grip. They had them like that in the 30,

:20:42. > :20:45.there is nothing very knew. Just after the green, running up

:20:46. > :20:57.nicely, a bit fiery. Oh, a lot fiery.

:20:58. > :21:14.Awkward stance here for Sandra. Caught it fat.

:21:15. > :21:16.Yes, four left is the cry. Oh, nice in off the cusp there. I don't think

:21:17. > :21:32.she will complain about that result. Lydia Ko also is with the thick

:21:33. > :21:39.grip. Lovely rhythm to her putting stroke.

:21:40. > :21:43.She has had a lot of chances today, Ken, for six, eight, ten feet, they

:21:44. > :21:48.haven't gone in. Absolutely, she has had a few chances and a lot looked

:21:49. > :21:52.like they were going in. You get days like that. Nobody knows why.

:21:53. > :21:58.One or two pretend they know, but nobody really knows.

:21:59. > :22:05.Why didn't that putt of Mickelson's last week or whatever it was at the

:22:06. > :22:20.open go in for a 62? Something said no, not today young man.

:22:21. > :22:27.Charley Hull, always goes down on one knee, as if to ask for mercy,

:22:28. > :22:37.very quick with her putting routine. Had a quick look, no Wallying round.

:22:38. > :22:43.Much brisker rhythm to her stroke. Must be a bit of movement from

:22:44. > :22:48.right-to-left. Certainly as it slows. Get a good view from her, she

:22:49. > :22:59.has putted a couple of feet right. Overdone it. It. Just a whisker. Had

:23:00. > :23:07.the right idea, but from long range, just a near miss.

:23:08. > :23:38.You are not there. Birdie putt for Thompson back on 15.

:23:39. > :23:47.Hit it up. Oh, she's been a tad tentative with a lot of her puts.

:23:48. > :23:59.Must be so irritating to hit the ball as well as she does and then

:24:00. > :24:05.not make her fair share. For a par. She has had a slightly troubled day,

:24:06. > :24:11.today, doing that. Umpteen of those today. Come out in

:24:12. > :24:17.the morning and you feel good, and, well that is a long way, nearly four

:24:18. > :24:45.feet by, getting on that way, that is what you don't want.

:24:46. > :24:51.Very slow putting stroke, quite long. Usually from range, they only

:24:52. > :24:58.have to take it back about three or four inches. Watch this. That slow

:24:59. > :25:10.tick-tock, an old pendulum, old grandmother clock.

:25:11. > :25:56.Well holed. Par in for 72. Thompson. She won't

:25:57. > :26:03.be holding back here. Don't look as if she has got her driver but gives

:26:04. > :26:08.it the full lasso. That's -- oh. Look out, I was just having a cup of

:26:09. > :26:18.tea and a sandwich and I think it's all right. Might have been a lot,

:26:19. > :26:21.lot worse. There might will well strategically concealed oaks you

:26:22. > :26:35.left in there. I know. Straggling down that side. A touch of the

:26:36. > :26:43.sadist in us. Still ten foot short. But very near.

:26:44. > :26:47.That was Sandra Gal after her nice bounce in off one of the sponsor's

:26:48. > :26:52.hoardings, so, so a chance of saving par here at the final hole.

:26:53. > :26:59.Had a good round of golf. She eagled the seventh.

:27:00. > :27:06.You are talking about slow play, watch this for a moment if the

:27:07. > :27:10.cameraman stays here, they have played this umpteen time, hardly any

:27:11. > :27:15.wind, six or 7-iron, you get up and whack it. And put it on the green.

:27:16. > :27:18.With a nice free swing but they have to look at the books and someone

:27:19. > :27:21.will throw a bit of grass in the air, then they will tee up in the

:27:22. > :27:26.wrong place and have to move and then we have a chat and one of the

:27:27. > :27:31.spectators moves, and suddenly, if they can, there we go. If we can

:27:32. > :27:33.only save a minute, a minute-and-a-half a hole each

:27:34. > :27:43.player, for men and women, you have solved the problem of slow play.

:27:44. > :27:51.155 yards, pin at the back of the green.

:27:52. > :27:56.Ice easy swing. She pulled it a bit, pulled it or pushed it or grabbed

:27:57. > :27:59.it? Didn't hit it. The number of players with have seen short on this

:28:00. > :28:04.hole today, it is a Longridge running through the green, you don't

:28:05. > :28:09.want to rattle it through the back, but, at least half a club short. The

:28:10. > :28:13.flag has cut over a ridge on the green. Six before the flag and, so

:28:14. > :28:19.it is about 12 yards deep, the biggest target. It is not easy to

:28:20. > :28:24.pitch one, I don't know if you could play a, take a longer club and play

:28:25. > :28:27.a bit of run? I think that is the technique, Charley tend to go high,

:28:28. > :28:31.because she has enough club speed to pitch it up there and land it

:28:32. > :28:36.softly. There is is not much room for error.

:28:37. > :28:42.You were sounding like a Dickens character there, Peter. Was I? He

:28:43. > :28:46.was quite wise in his own way. You are only saying that Ken because you

:28:47. > :28:51.are off -- safely on course, I am here next to him. I have a bit of

:28:52. > :28:56.the old magic beside me. That could be good. Yes.

:28:57. > :29:02.Charley is my darling. Good shot Charley.

:29:03. > :29:08.Now, let's see what we think of that one. Oh, we are on. Sandra Gal for

:29:09. > :29:25.this amazing four at last. No. Well, that is going to be to be

:29:26. > :29:36.a 70 for the German Solheim Cup player.

:29:37. > :29:51.Good round from Sandra Gal. 70 is always good.

:29:52. > :29:57.She is tied fourth in the second of the five women's Majors, her best

:29:58. > :30:02.result in a major, in fact she has never made the cut in the Women's

:30:03. > :30:07.British Open Championship, she has picked up eight birdies through 11

:30:08. > :30:14.holes. Playing in 13th right now and making quite a statement. One shot

:30:15. > :30:19.clear of Ariya Jutanugarn, among the early starters today, round of 65.

:30:20. > :30:26.Stacy Lewis was right beside her with a 67 today. Mi-Hyang Lee, also

:30:27. > :30:35.of South Korea, going well at 4-under. At the moment it is being

:30:36. > :30:38.dominated, the of echelon is anyway by South Koreans, five of them in

:30:39. > :30:41.the top ten and these women from that part of the world have really

:30:42. > :30:48.made their mark in women's golf over the past ten or 15 years. Further

:30:49. > :30:57.down, Catriona Matthew, the last British winner of this great event,

:30:58. > :31:01.home in 2-under par today. Isabelle Boineau of France, winning the

:31:02. > :31:07.Scottish Open last week, also in the picture here. Yes, opening day. A

:31:08. > :31:12.bit of a shortage of British names on those leaderboards, but here is

:31:13. > :31:22.Michelle Wie. She is 4-over par, a couple of sixes and seven, not a

:31:23. > :31:28.good day for Michelle. She is obviously hurting, Peter. She falls

:31:29. > :31:33.back every shot. That has done very well. It's very hard to play if you

:31:34. > :31:42.are wounded. The aches and pains and knees and elbows and muscles. Oh,

:31:43. > :31:49.now, you were right, one of those sneaky trees that Clive put in!

:31:50. > :31:54.Clarkie, he looks such an innocent boy but he was a killer. Look at

:31:55. > :31:56.that. This can be done. I don't know if she has got the power to do it

:31:57. > :32:12.but it's a hard shot. She tried. How she got it in the front bunker?

:32:13. > :32:15.That's not bad. Almost impossible to get that on the green. There she is.

:32:16. > :32:35.Good effort. The 17th, the par-3. This is very

:32:36. > :32:36.awkward. The downslope, it will scuttle on and on, virtually

:32:37. > :33:01.impossible. I like to watch the shots of the

:33:02. > :33:09.club going under the ball, not a good result, but it was a very

:33:10. > :33:13.treacherous shot. I know it is very frustrating for club golfers to be

:33:14. > :33:19.told how easy it is to get out of a bunker, and it is easy if you know

:33:20. > :33:22.what you are doing, you should get out every time unless you are

:33:23. > :33:38.plugged or in an awkward spot. The sun comes out. A bit of putting to

:33:39. > :33:44.watch. I don't think we have seen anyone passing the hole from here.

:33:45. > :33:49.Yes, very much up the slope for the first half of the putt and then it

:33:50. > :33:59.breaks hard to the left, a little down the other side. It is tricky to

:34:00. > :34:03.judge. Over borrowed. And overhit, one of the first we have seen, twice

:34:04. > :34:20.wrong. She has got about eight feet past.

:34:21. > :34:25.That was a rattler. It was always tricky, she forced it up and when

:34:26. > :34:35.you get up the hill it can get away from you. Nice atmosphere out there?

:34:36. > :34:39.It is a joy. It always has been here. You go to some clubs and there

:34:40. > :34:43.is just something missing, you are not quite sure what it is. There is

:34:44. > :34:51.a slight atmosphere. But this has always been a welcoming course but

:34:52. > :34:55.spectators. Good organisation and there is plenty for them to do

:34:56. > :35:02.handle look at and enjoy. This is a par putt now. I suppose the good

:35:03. > :35:11.news is that she is getting nearer. Going back to what you have just

:35:12. > :35:19.said, it's the legacy of Alex Hey. He was fantastic here. They knew it.

:35:20. > :35:26.He did wonders here. This is our leader, yet another chance for a

:35:27. > :35:31.birdie. Running well... Oh no, perhaps she was getting a bit

:35:32. > :35:36.carried away by the thought of 59s and 47s or whatever it is. I was

:35:37. > :35:39.going to ask you how much the gremlins pop into your mind when you

:35:40. > :35:45.are on your way to a super low score. That is the game of golf, you

:35:46. > :35:48.learn how to hit it and then how to play and then how to control your

:35:49. > :35:52.thoughts. One of the drawbacks of golf is that you have too much time

:35:53. > :36:06.to think. This is to stay at level par. She should have learned a

:36:07. > :36:10.little from her first putt. That was simple, really simple par-3,

:36:11. > :36:20.dropping a shot when you are this quality of player, that is not good.

:36:21. > :36:32.But she did not mean to do it, sir! It looks odds-on to be a 73. Not

:36:33. > :36:37.many birdies at the 18th today. Just looking down the leaderboard there,

:36:38. > :36:45.Maria Parra, the Spanish amateur, the 20 15th European -- 20 15th

:36:46. > :36:53.European champion, in with a fine 69. The next amateur is Hannah

:36:54. > :36:59.O'Sullivan, the 2015 and matter -- amateur champion. Possible

:37:00. > :37:03.professional material, in a month or a year or two. Here we go, this is

:37:04. > :37:21.for a bogey four. Oh. Now, this is for a five will

:37:22. > :37:27.stop this would destroy you. -- for a five. Yes, it has all just got

:37:28. > :37:44.away from her at the end of the round here. Mika Miyazato at 18.

:37:45. > :37:48.Long putt. It tends to swing left to right at the end. Oh! That was

:37:49. > :37:58.beautifully judged. Beautifully judged by Mika. Home in 33, what a

:37:59. > :38:03.fantastic back nine. 69. Lovely. It can be done and it's nice to see

:38:04. > :38:09.smiling faces, too. I'm enjoying myself this week, after seeing all

:38:10. > :38:13.those young men and not so young man, forgetting to shave in the

:38:14. > :38:17.mornings, it used to be five o'clock shadow but now it's the fashion. It

:38:18. > :38:21.makes them look ten years older and I don't know why they do it but it's

:38:22. > :38:38.nice to see some smiling faces, joyful looking out here.

:38:39. > :38:44.This is Brittany Lincicome for her birdie at 18. Playing with Mika

:38:45. > :38:58.Miyazato and Paula Creamer. Very nice, another good closing

:38:59. > :39:11.nine, 30 two. The back nine is supposed to be more difficult. --

:39:12. > :39:20.32. Now Thompson. This is for a par. No. She stopped on that, just tapped

:39:21. > :39:23.at the ball instead of pushing through. It stayed up on the

:39:24. > :39:40.right-hand side and that is a dropped shot.

:39:41. > :39:55.Hull tapped in for her birdie after is blended tee shot at the 17th. --

:39:56. > :40:01.a splendid. A little bit of a breeze rattling around there, the tops of

:40:02. > :40:05.the trees. It is certainly funnelling down the hole, Charley

:40:06. > :40:08.Hull doesn't necessarily need to use her driver but there is a chance of

:40:09. > :40:20.taking one and she usually does when she can. Maybe a little down the

:40:21. > :40:25.left, just trying to fade it. She has still got a bit of energy left.

:40:26. > :40:30.I don't think she left anything behind there. She cracked it up the

:40:31. > :40:39.right-hand side. Well, that did not leap forward but it's a lovely

:40:40. > :40:45.drive. One handed practice swing to get the right arm working.

:40:46. > :40:54.It's a slightly different flight to Charley Hull's, it is slightly

:40:55. > :41:00.lower, when it hits the fairway it can run out a bit. She has got a

:41:01. > :41:06.good tempo. It's amazing. Very interesting style. Sweeping it off

:41:07. > :41:17.the top of the tee. Watch the ball as long as you can. Whoosh! Very

:41:18. > :41:19.fine player. That one dug its toes in and stopped, there was no real

:41:20. > :41:41.bounce on that one. I remember when I first saw Michelle

:41:42. > :41:47.Wie, it was at the 2004 Curtis cup in Formby. My goodness she could hit

:41:48. > :41:51.golf shots that we could not believe a 14-year-old was capable of

:41:52. > :41:57.hitting. Great control of the ball. I remember that very well. That is

:41:58. > :42:08.looking back from the camera behind the 17th green. The 16th green, back

:42:09. > :42:11.right. The 18th tee on the left. Interested spectators having a nice

:42:12. > :42:30.day out. There is the wee dynamo, the pocket

:42:31. > :42:36.dynamo, diamonds are worth more than bricks, you know.

:42:37. > :42:51.Slowly back, sweeps it away. That is nicely on the green.

:42:52. > :43:01.Former world number one. I think it was 2010 that she won five

:43:02. > :43:13.tournaments. And here is the current world number four.

:43:14. > :43:19.Strategically placed Oaktree, they're on our right as we look back

:43:20. > :43:22.to the tee, it is on the players' left, so once they decide to shift

:43:23. > :43:27.the flag further left, which I'm sure they will do later in the week,

:43:28. > :43:35.they really need to shape the ball from right to left to feed it close

:43:36. > :43:44.to the flag. Towards the back right today.

:43:45. > :43:51.Well followed. That was a bit bold. It's going to come back a whisker.

:43:52. > :44:15.That's not too bad. The Championship leader. Though she

:44:16. > :44:19.have enough club? -- does she have enough club? The gods are with her

:44:20. > :44:27.today, aren't they? Oh yes! They certainly are. You see, you can't do

:44:28. > :44:33.anything about that, not a very good tee shot but she ends up making a

:44:34. > :44:38.nine foot putt for her birdie, she has enough grace to smile and laugh

:44:39. > :44:40.and say, yes, I did well there! Some people pretend they did it on

:44:41. > :44:59.purpose, you know. Down the fairway we go, Lydia Ko on

:45:00. > :45:08.the left, Hull with the longest tee-shot. Ken is there. Just a

:45:09. > :45:15.little bit below her feet, in a little valley in the green, just

:45:16. > :45:20.feed it in from the left. It is playing very short, the 18th. She

:45:21. > :45:28.has 155 left, it is pretty darn short. The breeze is helping. The

:45:29. > :45:39.back tee, this is a formidable par-4. That was careless, sloppy.

:45:40. > :45:48.Yes, we have seen a number of loose shots from Lydia Ko today. Very

:45:49. > :46:04.unlike her. Her poor rounds tend to be around the par mark. Amazingly

:46:05. > :46:14.soft, big divots, the ball not running very far.

:46:15. > :46:25.From 152. She is not very happy with that by the look of it. The

:46:26. > :46:31.presentation as you play up to the 18th green must look terrific from

:46:32. > :46:35.the fairway, Ken, the hospitality roundabout and the colour scheme and

:46:36. > :46:40.the whole thing looks grand, doesn't it? Yes, it is framed by the oak

:46:41. > :46:47.trees and of course the big screens. It is absolutely lovely. What do you

:46:48. > :46:54.reckon she has took it from here? Can't be anything more than a wedge,

:46:55. > :46:59.129. The wind looks as though it is left to right. That's a big

:47:00. > :47:06.tee-shot. I see it landing on the centre of that gap. It might be a

:47:07. > :47:13.little 9, just depends on what you are trying to do. It is one of those

:47:14. > :47:18.shots where you don't get it inside 15 feet and you will be a little

:47:19. > :47:22.disappointed. There she goes again. Keep that one for the harvest

:47:23. > :47:35.Festival. APPLAUSE That was a good shot. Charley is

:47:36. > :47:38.putting together a fine finish, birdie at the last and a good chance

:47:39. > :47:46.of birdie here at 18, that would get her to 3-under. Awkward shot for

:47:47. > :47:51.Michelle. Michelle Wie. She has played that beautifully. How about

:47:52. > :47:57.that? That is a gem. One of the shots of the day. I don't know if

:47:58. > :47:59.she is in trouble with her back or her knee, struggling to walk up the

:48:00. > :48:12.slope there. We were talking about the caddies

:48:13. > :48:17.earlier and how they play a big part in the golfer's life. Jim Dawson was

:48:18. > :48:21.a caddy for Brian waits for many years and I remember him well and I

:48:22. > :48:28.was with Brian for his great run on the senior Tour, and he's not very

:48:29. > :48:31.well, so Jim, a lot of your friends here remember you fondly and send

:48:32. > :48:37.you good wishes and I hope you're on the mend. A good man there in Brian

:48:38. > :48:49.waits, he made the most of his talent. One of the pearly kings in

:48:50. > :49:01.the background, by the look of things, but maybe I'm wrong.

:49:02. > :49:08.You see the girl with the scoreboard, there. It's very

:49:09. > :49:15.interesting, this experiment going on, Thornton College School in

:49:16. > :49:18.Woburn have provided the scorers. They are taking some girls from the

:49:19. > :49:24.school and giving them golf lessons next year. Drop away here, playing

:49:25. > :49:34.from the edge. Was that the ball finished? Just a little bit up the

:49:35. > :49:42.slope. Not the greatest lie. Playing with a bit of loft. Interesting.

:49:43. > :49:46.That was beautifully struck. Just needed to settle down a fraction, it

:49:47. > :49:55.was always going to come out with a bit of run. Just going the extra

:49:56. > :50:01.four or five feet past. Now, this is a chance bought Mirim Lee to get to

:50:02. > :50:07.9-under par. -- for Mirim Lee. Another one. She missed a fairly

:50:08. > :50:14.short chance at the 12th, but she is now 9-under par and leads by two. It

:50:15. > :50:32.is an extraordinary round. 9-under after 14.

:50:33. > :50:40.Now, down in two from here would be something. Because this is not easy.

:50:41. > :50:47.She has not putted well today. She has hit some good putts that have

:50:48. > :50:57.not gone in, she has misjudged her line and length. This is a cricket

:50:58. > :51:03.pitch length away or close to it. Up the hill and down the other side.

:51:04. > :51:07.This is not easy. Very difficult. If it was a dive it would be a high

:51:08. > :51:19.tariff one. She has done well, it comes and it comes and it comes.

:51:20. > :51:23.Very good. Full marks for that one. Started brightly enough, Westberg.

:51:24. > :51:28.Birdie at the 2nd but then no more after that. A couple of double

:51:29. > :51:46.bogeys. Two bogeys and a double bogey at the 17th.

:51:47. > :51:59.It is quite a big green, this final 18th here on the Marquess course. A

:52:00. > :52:04.couple of slopes, a couple of rolls. It is divided by a spine that runs

:52:05. > :52:11.across it. This could be a fantastic round for Charley Hull, a nice one

:52:12. > :52:16.on the 15th and a birdie on the 17th, and this is how you build a

:52:17. > :52:20.card when your game is not quite there and it could be quite sound

:52:21. > :52:26.score if she can no urge this in. Up the hill, off the right. And it is

:52:27. > :52:30.slow, very slow. Not much outside the hole, speed comes into it,

:52:31. > :52:34.though. If she hits it firmly enough there is not much outside the hole,

:52:35. > :52:43.but if it dribbles in it could go left. She has done it. It is there.

:52:44. > :52:47.Well done. Perfect. She has had a scrappy sort of round and turned it

:52:48. > :52:53.into a pretty good score at the end of the day. No drop shots, four

:52:54. > :52:58.birdies at the beginning and end of the round. Well done. That is

:52:59. > :53:03.certainly going to be the best of this trio with a round of 69 because

:53:04. > :53:09.four Lydia Ko it has been so-so today. Not really got going. Here we

:53:10. > :53:14.go again, holding up the number of fingers according to pace and break.

:53:15. > :53:20.You stand either side of it and straddle the line, and subtract the

:53:21. > :53:25.number you first thought of! This sounds like a drinking game! Just

:53:26. > :53:29.hope for the best! People do some potty things trying to get the ball

:53:30. > :53:34.in the hole. Standing this way and that, but that is the magic of the

:53:35. > :53:44.game. This is a horribly tricky one, across the slope and down the hill.

:53:45. > :53:50.That slid right across the face of the hole. Three from the edge of the

:53:51. > :53:55.final hole. It was an untidy score, lots of opportunities, at least five

:53:56. > :54:05.or six. The world number one. That will spur her on for tomorrow. She

:54:06. > :54:10.needs to, that is a round of 74. That could be ten shots behind,

:54:11. > :54:21.could be a long way behind. 67 tomorrow will put her right. This is

:54:22. > :54:25.just to finish out, she has been a bit adrift of her playing partners.

:54:26. > :54:35.It has been ugly in the last four holes. Even this is a little bit in

:54:36. > :54:43.it, you have to hit it firmly, confident strike, rattle it in.

:54:44. > :54:50.Well, that just hangs onto the right half of the hole, in it goes for a

:54:51. > :54:53.closing par but a back nine of 40 four Linda Wessberg. Into the warm

:54:54. > :55:01.embrace of her playing partner but she scores 77, though. Might need

:55:02. > :55:07.something more than a glass of orange squash to night to ease the

:55:08. > :55:12.pain. That was a very good round, though, for Charley Hull, those last

:55:13. > :55:24.two birdies really make it better, 17 and 18, two birdies. She is off

:55:25. > :55:28.to take a few selfies. All of the organisation that goes in to a

:55:29. > :55:34.tournament is quite extraordinary. Here is the star of the moment,

:55:35. > :55:40.driving at the 15th, Mirim Lee. Championship leader by two. She is

:55:41. > :55:52.9-under. If that's a good one, she's got a chance. Oh! Sit there. Oh, you

:55:53. > :56:01.don't want to go in there. You might find an old burial ground in there!

:56:02. > :56:05.9-under 314 and then gets to the par-5 with a fairway as wide as a

:56:06. > :56:12.field and then she goes into the trees. Mirim Lee is still out in

:56:13. > :56:17.front, two shots clear. Jutanugarn was one of the morning starters,

:56:18. > :56:27.finishing with a 65. Stacy Lewis was also a morning player. Azahara Munoz

:56:28. > :56:38.in that group, on 68. Martin, the winner at Royal Birkdale a couple of

:56:39. > :56:42.years ago, she is 4-under par. Yani Tseng, five-time major winner. That

:56:43. > :56:48.is good to see you. And the amateur Maria Parra of Spain, 69, 3-under

:56:49. > :56:54.par. Carrie Webb was in with a 69 as well. 3-under par. Hazel Court with

:56:55. > :56:59.her after her round. It's lovely to see you again, and back where it all

:57:00. > :57:04.started for you, how special is Woburn for you and why? This is

:57:05. > :57:09.where it all started 21 years ago, as a 20-year-old, I was fortunate

:57:10. > :57:12.enough to win around here, not on this course obviously but it's been

:57:13. > :57:18.a long time since we've been here. I think it is great to be back here

:57:19. > :57:21.and reminisce about how it all started. Is this challenge as

:57:22. > :57:27.relevant as some of the links courses you have been playing in the

:57:28. > :57:30.past few years? Is it nice to play parkland and heathland again? I

:57:31. > :57:34.don't know if it is the same challenge, I guess. I think about

:57:35. > :57:39.all of the elements a bit more on a links course. And we are used to

:57:40. > :57:43.playing that, but this is a lovely golf course, and it is a different

:57:44. > :57:48.challenge. I only got to see the coarse ones which was yesterday.

:57:49. > :57:51.What was good for me was that I could not get ahead of myself

:57:52. > :57:57.because I could not remember what the next hole was! So it was just my

:57:58. > :58:02.second look at it today, and I felt I did pretty well, just with that

:58:03. > :58:06.scenario being the second luck. I was chatting away earlier, saying

:58:07. > :58:10.that it cannot be 21 years since you won around here. I remember you

:58:11. > :58:16.fearlessly going with it with your wraparound shades! I am trying to

:58:17. > :58:20.display your blushes here, but you have been one of the greatest

:58:21. > :58:24.players in the women's game, seven Majors. When you look back what are

:58:25. > :58:28.you most satisfied about with your life? I mean really, it's just a

:58:29. > :58:36.dream country, I was telling Johnny that when I won here years ago, at

:58:37. > :58:40.20, you never get ahead of yourself because you are so in the moment,

:58:41. > :58:44.and it was not until I got to the 18th tee with such a large lead that

:58:45. > :58:48.I backed off three times because I could not believe I was going to win

:58:49. > :58:53.the British Open, and to have achieved what I have since then, you

:58:54. > :58:59.know, my wildest dream has country. It is great to see you back where it

:59:00. > :59:05.all began. Thanks very much. Thanks for having me. She won in 1995. 69,

:59:06. > :59:12.3-under par, large group on 3-under par including Yani Tseng and also on

:59:13. > :59:18.69, we will find down there the name of Charley Hull after her birdie -

:59:19. > :59:25.birdie finish, 3-under par. We will get her thoughts after that round. A

:59:26. > :59:30.lovely round of 69 today and are fighting finish, tell us about the

:59:31. > :59:34.last couple of holes. It was good to finish birdie- birdie, I said to my

:59:35. > :59:40.caddy, let's make a couple coming in and I did. I'm happy with my round,

:59:41. > :59:44.I was nervous on the first two because this is my home course, and

:59:45. > :59:46.it is a pretty easy tee shot and I did not want to screw it up but I'm

:59:47. > :00:02.happy. Curably play the front nine and my

:00:03. > :00:06.dad picks me up at the ninth, and, but, I am confident round here, I

:00:07. > :00:10.play further back because I usually play the lads, it is nice to come in

:00:11. > :00:14.with 7-irons an stuff, so it is good. Tell me about the crowd. I

:00:15. > :00:16.know you expressed a bit of reservation about some of your best

:00:17. > :00:23.mates coming to see you and thinking it might have put you off. How did

:00:24. > :00:27.you get on with it? I had my best mate James here and my other friend,

:00:28. > :00:30.she has never been on a golf course before, it was funny, I don't know

:00:31. > :00:35.how she found it today. It is good though. I am sure you have a long

:00:36. > :00:41.chat and they will come back and see more over the weekend. Thanks guys.

:00:42. > :00:45.There is the leaderboard, picking up where we left off with Charley Hull

:00:46. > :00:52.on 69. Some good late scores as well. They will finish well into the

:00:53. > :00:56.evening. Emily Pederson 3-under. Catriona Matthew, she finished with

:00:57. > :01:04.a 70 good back nine. She will be off to Olympics with Charley Hull. Seven

:01:05. > :01:12.amateurs in the field. Brook endeson, a major winner this year,

:01:13. > :01:16.just 18. -- Henderson. 71 as well. Minjee Lee, she will be at the

:01:17. > :01:26.Olympics. The Irish amateur 1-under with three holes to play.

:01:27. > :01:29.A multinational leaderboard as well. A bit further down, Felicity

:01:30. > :01:37.Johnson, a round of 72. That is level par.

:01:38. > :01:42.72 is pretty much mid-table represent built. Melissa Reid round

:01:43. > :01:50.in 72. Brittany Lang the US Open champion. 72.

:01:51. > :01:55.Kristina Kim, four holes to go. Level par. Still looking for

:01:56. > :02:06.something from the final few holes. And we will go to the last hole and

:02:07. > :02:10.Lexi Thompson. Long putt, we have seen that few times today. Ken

:02:11. > :02:16.described it beautifully ten minutes ago, coming up over the ridge,

:02:17. > :02:21.uphill, over the top and on we go. We have only seen one or two players

:02:22. > :02:34.get it really close, you know, a couple of feet or so away.

:02:35. > :02:45.Up and over the top, down she comes. Oh, very tidy.

:02:46. > :02:50.It was a beauty. Lexi Thompson. Struggled a bit at times today.

:02:51. > :02:58.Few very good shots. But all in all, not bad. Mirim Lee,

:02:59. > :03:02.I believe this is her third shot. He has got away with that drive which

:03:03. > :03:11.looked to be heading to the deepest of jungles.

:03:12. > :03:16.Telling this one to sit down. That is OK, it is a fast putt, bear

:03:17. > :03:23.in mind where her drive looked to be heading.

:03:24. > :03:33.Michelle Wie at the final hole, she is 4-over par.

:03:34. > :03:40.Two putts for a 76. It is dribbling off. Yes, down the right. Everybody

:03:41. > :03:46.has many missed that putt. It is on a hog's back there, it is, probably

:03:47. > :03:52.just at the left edge. Or maybe a little bit more than

:03:53. > :03:55.that. In she goes.

:03:56. > :03:59.Michelle Wie. Not happy day, but I think she is a

:04:00. > :04:06.bit wounded, may have tweaked a muscle or something. There you can

:04:07. > :04:19.see seven at the second, and, umpteen bogeys. Struggle.

:04:20. > :04:23.Mize is the third member of this group -- Ai Miyazato is the third

:04:24. > :04:30.member of this group. Beautiful second she played in here.

:04:31. > :05:03.We haven't seen a better one. This for a three.

:05:04. > :05:11.Yes. Beautiful. APPLAUSE

:05:12. > :05:14.Nice way to finish. Started with a birdie, one just

:05:15. > :05:22.about in the middle and one at the end.

:05:23. > :05:28.Reach up to hug Michelle Wie. Jump up. Tom forn par.

:05:29. > :05:33.To -- Tom sob a par, to finish with 72. Might have been better, might

:05:34. > :05:52.have been worse. In she goes. Work to do tomorrow.

:05:53. > :06:00.Smiles all round. Think every member of that group will think there were

:06:01. > :06:04.a few shots left out there. That is the joy of watching women's golf,

:06:05. > :06:11.they all, 98% of them always look happy to be here.

:06:12. > :06:19.Which is very refreshing. So Mirim Lee out there really

:06:20. > :06:22.setting the place alight on the par 15th and two shots clear of

:06:23. > :06:27.Jutanugarn. Very good scoring.

:06:28. > :06:31.It is just not playing very long. They have bumped the tees up a bit

:06:32. > :06:37.and Charley Hull used to playing this course off further back tees.

:06:38. > :06:41.And so comes down a little bit when players are as accurate as these.

:06:42. > :06:43.Mirim Lee has got away with things on the 15th. Birdie attempt but a

:06:44. > :07:07.tricky one. Looking good. Oh, just swung across.

:07:08. > :07:17.Very fast putt. APPLAUSE

:07:18. > :07:27.Played long side the golfers, who are both level par. Nine shots

:07:28. > :07:51.behind their playing partner. The ebullient Christina Kim.

:07:52. > :08:02.This is Leurquin. This is quick. Another one going to Rio for the

:08:03. > :08:03.Olympics. Just one Belgian representative for

:08:04. > :08:23.the women. So tee shot on the 18th and mow

:08:24. > :08:35.Martin is going very well indeed. In a good position.

:08:36. > :08:43.Pillar has found the sand. We may find some of these tees put back a

:08:44. > :08:50.little bit tomorrow, Andrew. They are fobbed irons on, middle irons on

:08:51. > :08:54.the a lot of holes. Here we go, consulting the book, you would think

:08:55. > :08:59.it's the simplest thing in the world to know what club to hit from there,

:09:00. > :09:06.150 odd yards. It is not difficult to work it out. This is why we are

:09:07. > :09:14.in the situation we are now. The game dying because of slow play.

:09:15. > :09:21.Club golfers copy. So many book, got to go back in the

:09:22. > :09:27.library. Pillar is hitting out of the bunker, she is splashing out.

:09:28. > :09:33.Mow Martin is not the longest hitter at all. She had a won't. Second into

:09:34. > :09:46.the closing hole at berk dale on her way to victory.

:09:47. > :09:51.Berkdale on her way to victory. Well, a rescue of so sort. Mind you,

:09:52. > :09:55.you can get up to a 7-iron with these wooden headed looking club,

:09:56. > :10:03.can't you. Get that with 18 degrees of loft or

:10:04. > :10:09.whatever it is. 4-under parks she is going well.

:10:10. > :10:22.-- par, she going well. Chopped it off. #14r50iding it in.
