:00:12. > :00:36.Hello and welcome to Kingsbarns in Fife for the fourth major in the

:00:37. > :00:39.winning's Callander, the Ricoh Women's British Open. In the past

:00:40. > :00:43.decade this Championship has been won by some of the great names in

:00:44. > :00:49.women's golf, and been played on some of Britain's great courses. For

:00:50. > :00:52.the first time, it comes to this stunning location just a stone's

:00:53. > :01:12.throw from one of the most iconic of them all.

:01:13. > :01:41.Right to the end. Brilliant. That is the shortest putt that ever won a

:01:42. > :01:59.Championship. All the way. I'd tell you what, that score is very cheeky.

:02:00. > :02:05.Right in the middle! The champion. Simply brilliant performance to beat

:02:06. > :02:26.the elements and everyone else by a distance. Very, very impressive. The

:02:27. > :02:30.winner. Kingsbarns is a regular on the men's European Tour schedule but

:02:31. > :02:37.this week is hosting a major Championship for the first time. Who

:02:38. > :02:42.better to assess the course than our man Ken Brown? What a place. You can

:02:43. > :02:46.smell the fresh air. Kingsbarns is a wonderful golf course. One of its

:02:47. > :02:56.features are generous and wide fairways. There is a bit of rough

:02:57. > :03:01.around. Let's have a quick look at the card of the course. This is the

:03:02. > :03:08.official scorecard. You can see a here the length of the course is

:03:09. > :03:12.nearly 6780 yards, so it's quite long, particularly if it's breezy.

:03:13. > :03:16.One of the real features of the course is the size of the greens.

:03:17. > :03:22.They are seriously capacious. The average depth is 45 paces. Look at

:03:23. > :03:26.this one. Let's see if I can hit a putt down here. This must be 75

:03:27. > :03:34.paces. It's a wedge to the front and a 6-iron to the back. You need a

:03:35. > :03:41.good touch on the greens. The real feature here is the views. They are

:03:42. > :03:46.special. It is a magic place. On a sunny day. It really is a stunning

:03:47. > :03:50.location, particularly when the sun shines. Taking on the course this

:03:51. > :03:56.week is the most international field of the year so far. 27 different

:03:57. > :04:01.nationalities, including the world's top 25 players and the winners of

:04:02. > :04:04.the last 24 Majors. They've all gathered here this week to master

:04:05. > :04:17.the links of Scotland. We've picked out if you in particular to look out

:04:18. > :04:23.for. She's never finished outside the top 17. Lexi Thompson came so

:04:24. > :04:30.close to a second major open this year but for a four shot penalty.

:04:31. > :04:40.Sundin Park has a mistake cut this season. She's playing in her second

:04:41. > :04:43.British women's open. Women's British Open has gone through a lot

:04:44. > :04:52.of changes in high gain, it's now almost a year since I last went.

:04:53. > :05:00.Charley Hull won her first LET event and played in the Solheim Cup aged

:05:01. > :05:04.just 17. England's Mel Reid was one of the early starters on day one and

:05:05. > :05:11.took advantage of calm conditions. Four and the path through her first

:05:12. > :05:15.14 holes. Michelle Wie has had a dramatic rise back up the rankings

:05:16. > :05:25.and was putting on a solid show. This birdie putt at the 12th, her

:05:26. > :05:29.fifth birdie of the day. England's Mel Reed and Michelle Wie atop the

:05:30. > :05:32.leaderboard alongside Anna Nordqvist his showing great strength despite

:05:33. > :05:37.struggling with glandular fever. In the background is the Solheim Cup,

:05:38. > :05:42.all players will be looking to impress but Nordqvist needs a

:05:43. > :05:47.captain 's pick to be part of the big showdown. Leo Maguire also

:05:48. > :05:53.started nicely. She is currently the world's number one amateur. Let's

:05:54. > :06:01.get out on the course without commentary team -- with our

:06:02. > :06:08.commentary team. COMMENTATOR: Mel Reid at the 15th, par-5, her third

:06:09. > :06:11.shot going along very nicely. Joining me in the box is Helen

:06:12. > :06:19.Alfredsson. Good start. Very good start. It's nice to see Mel Reid

:06:20. > :06:27.playing so well. Michelle Wie is very picturesque par-3 14th. 183

:06:28. > :06:40.yards. That's an absolute cracker Jack. Go on, run on. Ally McDonald

:06:41. > :06:49.on 18, 3-under for the day. Played really nicely. Second shot. Gives

:06:50. > :06:58.herself a nice little chance for a birdie to go 4-under for the day, to

:06:59. > :07:06.join the lead. Mel Reid goes 5-under, taking the lead in the

:07:07. > :07:13.tournament. Michelle Wie to join Mel Reid at 5-under. This is for a two

:07:14. > :07:18.at the 14th. Nicely done. There went the many tees at the 14th. What a

:07:19. > :07:22.good-looking card. Michelle Wie dropped the stroke at the 2nd and

:07:23. > :07:31.since then she's had six birdies. Without birdie at the 15th, Mel Reid

:07:32. > :07:39.and Wie are tied at the top. Anna Nordqvist birdshot on 15. -- third

:07:40. > :07:43.shot. It's good to see her play. She wasn't sure if she would play but it

:07:44. > :07:54.looks like she's coming in with a pretty good game here. Nice chance

:07:55. > :08:05.for birdie on 15. The 18th. Ally McDonald's chance to move to

:08:06. > :08:17.4-under. A little downhill and flattens out at the bottom. She's

:08:18. > :08:27.hit it. What a good opener. 32, 36, 68, 4-under par, just one behind the

:08:28. > :08:33.leaders. Very satisfying. Morgan Pressel on 17 for a birdie to go

:08:34. > :08:37.4-under. And she does. We'll see a lot of birdies today and I think a

:08:38. > :08:40.lot of the players will think it's important to take advantage of this

:08:41. > :08:52.day, because you don't know what tomorrow's going to hold. Maguire.

:08:53. > :08:56.Very tight to the hollow at the left of the green. She'll have to be

:08:57. > :09:06.careful not to drag it left. A bit too nippy. The chance of a birdie.

:09:07. > :09:22.Mel Reid on the 16th, her second shot. Just... We see that is a sort

:09:23. > :09:32.of falls front there and it's about ten yards up but you have to go.

:09:33. > :09:39.Just a tad short. Leo Maguire on 15 for a birdie. Trying to go 3-under

:09:40. > :09:48.for the day. She does it brilliantly. World number one

:09:49. > :10:01.amateur player at the moment, from Ireland. Anna for her birdie on the

:10:02. > :10:07.15th. And she makes it to go 4-under. Joining three other

:10:08. > :10:20.players. Let's check the leaderboard. The

:10:21. > :10:23.early stages of the first round of the Women's British Open, it's Mel

:10:24. > :10:31.Reid and Michelle Wie tied for the lead. Ally McDonald looking very

:10:32. > :10:42.nice too. Leo Maguire the amateur, 3-under par, a special day for her.

:10:43. > :10:48.Mel Reid. Slightly mis-hit her second. Didn't quite get up that

:10:49. > :10:54.bluff. A birdie chance... Not quite hard enough. But a par at the 16th,

:10:55. > :11:03.a very acceptable score. Tricky par-4. A visit to the sand. It looks

:11:04. > :11:21.like a drop stroke. On 16. That was a hurtful one. You

:11:22. > :11:31.can't ever lose concentration of focus in this game. Maguire on 16,

:11:32. > :11:46.her second shot. Looking for another birdie. A bit to the right side but

:11:47. > :11:54.safely on the green. Michelle Wie just wants to tap in for par on 15,

:11:55. > :12:02.she does it no problem. Nice to see her. Her putting seems to be working

:12:03. > :12:13.right now. Mel Reid's second shot on 17. She has a great shot in, nice

:12:14. > :12:28.chance to get back one shot to join the leaders. Leona Maguire on 16 for

:12:29. > :12:38.a birdie. A long effort. Not getting all the power in that one. Got some

:12:39. > :12:42.work to do. Well, the sea is like a mill pond but the white ponies are

:12:43. > :12:46.beginning to show as they come in. A little bit of a ripple. Looks so

:12:47. > :12:54.much better when the tide is in. The rubber gear will come out. Here we

:12:55. > :13:04.are. The rubber gear, always attracted. Leona Maguire on 16 for

:13:05. > :13:10.par. It's tough to lose a few shots coming in. Typical golf, though,

:13:11. > :13:21.isn't it? It's not over until it's over. Anna Nordqvist has played not

:13:22. > :13:32.a bad second. A big putt this. If it goes in... That's good. Got away

:13:33. > :13:39.with a par-4. Going along nicely. Cristie Kerr, second shot on 13. Not

:13:40. > :13:49.the very long shot. Just a little wedge. Right now with this little

:13:50. > :13:55.wind, it shouldn't do much. Just wait until it'll comes up. Melissa

:13:56. > :14:04.Reid at the 17th, after that beautiful second shot, this is a

:14:05. > :14:15.birdie putt to join the lead. Looking good. In she goes, she joins

:14:16. > :14:20.the leaders. Mel Reid, 5-under par. Michelle Wie on 16th. She has a long

:14:21. > :14:36.shot in. Rescue would. She does an excellent job, giving

:14:37. > :14:42.her a chance for a birdie and to take the lead by herself at 6-under.

:14:43. > :14:52.Cristie Kerr, like old father Thames she rolling along. And rolling them

:14:53. > :14:58.in, that's the way you do it. Not a drop shot, good card. Mel Reid on

:14:59. > :15:13.the 18th. Second shot. Good-looking player, isn't she? Yes,

:15:14. > :15:18.she's done a lot of work in the last few years and it's starting to pay

:15:19. > :15:25.off. See that great shot, nice chance for a birdie and the outright

:15:26. > :15:36.lead. Michelle Wie, the 16th, take the lead. All the way, well done!

:15:37. > :15:47.Looking very solid over her putts, now. Cristie Kerr's tee shot, the

:15:48. > :15:58.par-3. How has she done... Not too shabby. Good in the sand. Final hole

:15:59. > :16:09.for Melissa Reid. This is to go to 6-under. And its... No. Good try.

:16:10. > :16:18.That will be a round of 67. Which won't be for behind come close of

:16:19. > :16:24.play. APPLAUSE Two drop shots, 32, 35, very nice

:16:25. > :16:27.opening round. There's the situation, Michelle Wie leads the

:16:28. > :16:34.way but she's still got a couple of holes to play. A wonderful round the

:16:35. > :16:39.Mel Reid. They were great conditions for you, how pleased are you with

:16:40. > :16:44.the round? You aren't going to get Kingsbarns much easier than that, to

:16:45. > :16:47.be honest. It's important when it's like that to take advantage,

:16:48. > :16:50.especially in a tournament like this. On a links course, you are

:16:51. > :16:56.going to get the odd bad break with the weather and the contours. I feel

:16:57. > :16:59.for the first time this season probably and since Australia, I feel

:17:00. > :17:03.extremely comfortable with my swing. I've put in a lot of hours to fill

:17:04. > :17:08.like that and I feel pretty good about this week. COMMENTATOR:

:17:09. > :17:17.Michelle Wie at the 17th, big ravine in front of this green. The green

:17:18. > :17:19.slopes towards you as you look. Playing quite short today. A good

:17:20. > :17:33.shot. Cracking shot. Lydia Ko has suddenly discovered how

:17:34. > :17:39.difficult the game is, or people have told she should change and

:17:40. > :17:43.improve. Get back to playing your old way, Lydia. Simple, don't

:17:44. > :17:51.clutter your brain, just get on with it. You can do it, you've done it.

:17:52. > :18:01.Do it again. Maguire, second shot on the 18th. A punchy one, we see a lot

:18:02. > :18:12.of them here. She had a great club, maybe a little bit too far left.

:18:13. > :18:25.Lydia for birdie on 17. She needs to get something going here. " But no

:18:26. > :18:32.cigar. -- close but no cigar. The Maguire would like to finish with a

:18:33. > :18:35.birdie. Pretty straight putt. She does, what a great finish from the

:18:36. > :18:45.number one amateur in the world. APPLAUSE

:18:46. > :18:50.69, a great start for the Open. Michelle Wie with this little putt

:18:51. > :18:55.for a birdie at the 17th, after that beautiful second shot. Keep your

:18:56. > :19:07.head still, just pushing down... Nearly in the middle. Disappeared.

:19:08. > :19:12.She's jolly about it. Former US Open champion In Gee Chun. Perfect

:19:13. > :19:24.position on 16, up the hill to this tiered green. That's a classic shot.

:19:25. > :19:33.Beautifully played. Lydia Ko could do with a birdie. Just 1-over par.

:19:34. > :19:43.Second to the 18th. I think she's admiring it. So she should, right

:19:44. > :19:57.down the banner. But the 72. Setting up to fade it. Cut it in, skip it up

:19:58. > :20:05.to the flag. It's an absolute beauty. What a day it's been for

:20:06. > :20:12.her. Great to watch. In Gee Chun for a birdie, on this demanding 16th.

:20:13. > :20:21.Solid performance from the former US Open winner.

:20:22. > :20:37.18th, Michelle Wie for another birdie. She's done it right in the

:20:38. > :20:43.heart of the hole. Round in 64, that's a special round. It started

:20:44. > :20:47.with a six. One of the best round she's ever played in a major

:20:48. > :20:57.Championship, and smiled all the way. Lydia Ko, desperately trying to

:20:58. > :21:03.get in and even par. Only had one birdie today. And one is all that

:21:04. > :21:08.remains. Birdied the fifth, dropped shots on six and seven and pars

:21:09. > :21:22.everywhere else, if she pops that one in. Lindy Duncan, trying to edge

:21:23. > :21:31.into that group on 5-under. Out in 31 for Lindy Duncan. Very, very nice

:21:32. > :21:44.card indeed. Four birdies in the last five. Lydia Ko, this for the

:21:45. > :21:53.past four 18th. -- par-4 18th. Round in 73. Smiling. Nine birdies on

:21:54. > :21:59.Michelle Wie's card, round in 64. She leads by three. You had some

:22:00. > :22:03.great conditions to play in out there, you took advantage of it and

:22:04. > :22:08.you seem to enjoy it. How much did you enjoy it? It was gorgeous out

:22:09. > :22:11.there. Sometimes you get lost in the views, it's so spectacular. It's a

:22:12. > :22:14.really fun golf course and I'm really proud of myself or taking

:22:15. > :22:19.advantage of the conditions. It seems like the course suits you, how

:22:20. > :22:24.does it compare to previous venues for the Lydia Ko? I think we've been

:22:25. > :22:29.lucky. We played some great venues like St Andrews obviously. This is

:22:30. > :22:33.our first time here. This is one of the great ones as well. I thought it

:22:34. > :22:38.was a really great golf course is. You had a taste of links golf last

:22:39. > :22:41.week, how big a part has that played in your preparation and putting a

:22:42. > :22:46.squad together like that today? I'm really glad I came over last week.

:22:47. > :22:49.Links golf is different, especially where I live in Florida, it's a

:22:50. > :22:54.completely different game. The conditions last week work extremely

:22:55. > :23:01.difficult so I'm glad I went through that. A sensational 64 from Michelle

:23:02. > :23:07.Wie, nine birdies in total. It's a beautiful condition today, Michelle

:23:08. > :23:11.is one of a number of players who took advantage. Buried the nine this

:23:12. > :23:16.morning and ideal scoring conditions. Michelle has had a good

:23:17. > :23:21.year's golf. This time last year, at the Women's British Open, she was

:23:22. > :23:26.ranked 114. She is now up to 35. This course is giving us the

:23:27. > :23:30.opportunity to see Hersh great shotmaking skills. That was

:23:31. > :23:35.impressive this morning. Mel Reid has done very well this morning.

:23:36. > :23:40.This is her favourite course and she gets good vibes here. With the wind

:23:41. > :23:44.picking up, that 64 and 67, I don't think there's going to be too many

:23:45. > :23:50.past them. The marquee group this afternoon will be trying to match,

:23:51. > :23:55.if not better Michelle Wie's score. They are all playing together and it

:23:56. > :24:13.includes defending champion Jutanugarn.

:24:14. > :24:20.Said the current big guns all out together. The top three in the world

:24:21. > :24:24.with an average age of just over 23. But it was an older head who was

:24:25. > :24:28.making all the big moves in the afternoon's play. 53-year-old Dame

:24:29. > :24:33.Laura Davies came through qualifying on Monday to book her place in her

:24:34. > :24:44.37th consecutive Women's British Open. This is the par-3 7th, a

:24:45. > :25:04.birdie putt for Davies. It would be her fourth birdie of the day. The

:25:05. > :25:10.very next hole, the par-5 8th. That would be back-to-back birdies. In it

:25:11. > :25:21.goes and Laura Davies would move to 5-under par. South Korean IK Kim was

:25:22. > :25:25.also going along nicely. A birdie on 15th followed by this opportunity on

:25:26. > :25:30.the 16th. Her eighth of the day to move her to 7-under. It's Michelle

:25:31. > :25:39.Wie setting the pace of Day one but that 64. IK Kim has a couple of

:25:40. > :25:45.close finishes. Laura Davies just three of the lead. Sophie Lamb

:25:46. > :25:51.qualified on Monday. She's also started nicely on 3-under the par-3

:25:52. > :25:59.15th. Brooke Henderson finished with a 70, 2-under par. Charley Hull has

:26:00. > :26:09.played just seven holes and has had a good start. Let's rejoin our

:26:10. > :26:18.commentary team. COMMENTATOR: IK Kim on 18. Not usually an indication

:26:19. > :26:35.that that's been tweaked to the left. Not too bad. This 11th green

:26:36. > :26:42.is 65 yards long. Laura electing to throw that one high up in the air,

:26:43. > :26:50.downwind. And another birdie opportunity coming up for Dame

:26:51. > :26:54.Laura. Been a fine round of golf so far by cello joy. Got herself to

:26:55. > :27:09.4-under. This is a birdie attempt on the last -- cello Choi -- Chella

:27:10. > :27:20.Choi. Eagle chance for Lexi Thompson. A touch fortunate with her

:27:21. > :27:28.second. She had a good race at it. Left herself rather longer than she

:27:29. > :27:33.would like for birdie coming back. IK Kim, 18th green, this is, to join

:27:34. > :27:40.Michelle Wie on the magic number of 64. The swish of the putter

:27:41. > :27:51.afterwards tells you she didn't like it, it's been a fine round of golf.

:27:52. > :27:58.Lexi Thompson, this for a birdie. Pops it right in the heart of the

:27:59. > :28:06.cup. A little lucky with the second but makes a birdie out of it. IK

:28:07. > :28:12.Kim, this for par, this 465. That's a great round of golf. She tucks

:28:13. > :28:17.herself one shot in behind Michelle Wie. This player is only one of two

:28:18. > :28:21.multiple winners on the LPGA this year and is in fine shape after this

:28:22. > :28:30.round. Backed on the fairway at the 8th, Charley Hull is going to give

:28:31. > :28:34.this a good bash. It needs a good bounce and kick forward and has got

:28:35. > :28:38.one. A little unlucky, it will offer at the front of the green took the

:28:39. > :28:42.sting out of it, she'll have that for an eagle. It bit of breeze

:28:43. > :28:51.helping of the right at the 9th. Perfect tee shot for So Yeon Ryu.

:28:52. > :29:06.Trying to work it in with the breeze. Go on... Delightfully

:29:07. > :29:10.played. A big divot flies as Lexi Thompson plays her second in here to

:29:11. > :29:20.the ninth. Nice bit of check on that. Peppering the flag. Charley

:29:21. > :29:25.Hull up a little tear on the green. It's going to be a very tidy opening

:29:26. > :29:36.eight holes, a couple of birdies already. Laura is moving along very

:29:37. > :29:40.nicely. Got the claw grip going on the part, that's got to be good.

:29:41. > :29:49.Just hung up on the right-hand side for her. Terrific outward nine of

:29:50. > :30:01.31. Starts back with a couple of pars. All is good in the world of

:30:02. > :30:05.Davies at the moment. Ashley Buhai, you might remember her more as

:30:06. > :30:13.Ashleigh Simon. Not quite getting the Read right. Lexi Thompson,

:30:14. > :30:23.should be a bit of left movement on this putt. APPLAUSE

:30:24. > :30:42.It went one way and then the other. A lovely three. Well holed. So Yeon

:30:43. > :30:46.Ryu trying to break this run of pars. That's the first birdie of the

:30:47. > :30:57.day for the world number one. Out in 35. Dangerous second shot for the

:30:58. > :31:01.17th, Lindy Duncan over the little stream that runs at the bottom of

:31:02. > :31:05.the hill. It could come trickling back from here. Go on... Is a bank

:31:06. > :31:08.at the back of the 17th green. Playing down breeze to get any

:31:09. > :31:15.closer, you've got to take a risk. Result. Short 12th, and Laura is on

:31:16. > :31:31.the tee. 133 yards today. She hit it a little left. Oh, that

:31:32. > :31:44.will give her a tricky start. That will test you out. Lindy Duncan,

:31:45. > :31:48.down the slope, right to left. The paste the greens is foxing some of

:31:49. > :31:55.the players, much slower than they are accustomed to. Yet to make a

:31:56. > :32:02.bogey. I hope she doesn't start now. That is a left-handed Texas wedge

:32:03. > :32:12.from the English Dame. That is awfully good. A touch of brilliance

:32:13. > :32:22.from Laura Davies. A big part for Duncan. She has yet to drop a shot.

:32:23. > :32:27.What a disappointing 3-putt. Laura, after a good bit of escapology,

:32:28. > :32:35.played left-handed to save the 12th. She has done it. I think she is

:32:36. > :32:47.enjoying it. Look back why wouldn't you?

:32:48. > :32:58.Did a lap of honour! That keeps the momentum going. That was a very

:32:59. > :33:14.solid round of golf from Sophie Lamb, joining Leona Maguire, who had

:33:15. > :33:21.a 69 and earlier today. That was a needless drop shot. She drove it so

:33:22. > :33:22.far down the fairway. That is very unsatisfying, to walk off with a

:33:23. > :33:45.bogey. Lindy Duncan is coming towards the

:33:46. > :33:51.end of her around. Smarting a bit from the 3-putt on the last green.

:33:52. > :33:53.But this gives her a great opportunity to make up for that.

:33:54. > :34:23.What a fine shot. Final hole and hopefully final shot

:34:24. > :34:29.of the day for Lindy Duncan. Very good indeed. Just the 3-putt at 17

:34:30. > :35:00.causing her a headache. That made a lovely sound. That is a

:35:01. > :35:21.terrific shot, comfortably long enough to make a par-5.

:35:22. > :35:37.It usually turns from there. Go on! That is lovely. Three equal chances.

:35:38. > :35:50.The group in front have waved them on to try and speed up play.

:35:51. > :36:20.Jutanugarn, eagle chance on 11. Well, it is stone dead, but it

:36:21. > :36:39.wasn't a very impressive putt. The tap in birdie takes her to 1-under.

:36:40. > :37:07.A chance here of an eagle for Lexi Tompson. She has hit it right in the

:37:08. > :37:15.jaws of the pocket too. The simplest of birdies, but an opportunity

:37:16. > :37:20.missed, perhaps. Raindrops, for the first time today. The forecast was

:37:21. > :37:20.for a couple of showers in the afternoon. Conditions this morning

:37:21. > :38:03.were perfect. Caroline Matheson, one of Europe's

:38:04. > :38:16.Solheim Cup hopefuls. Laura has made her majestic way to the scenic

:38:17. > :38:25.par-3/14. She has taken the flag on and she has set up yet another

:38:26. > :38:35.birdie chance. Ball above the feet, wind off the right. My goodness, she

:38:36. > :38:42.gave it a shot. This going to be champion, the wonder horse. Come on!

:38:43. > :38:55.How about that, baby? That for an eagle three. Beautiful tee shot here

:38:56. > :39:13.at the 14th. And in she goes. Well done, Laura. Charley Hull now, our

:39:14. > :39:25.exciting young English player. What a wonderful hole. Two cracking

:39:26. > :39:40.shots. So the situation as we get deep into the

:39:41. > :39:46.STUDIO: The weather did deteriorate dramatically. Heavy rain and the

:39:47. > :39:49.threat of lightning meant play was suspended for almost an hour. But

:39:50. > :39:54.eventually disguised it clear and play got back under way, so let's

:39:55. > :39:59.get back out on the course -- eventually, the skies did clear.

:40:00. > :40:08.COMMENTATOR: Lexi Thompson, on the 12th green. A very fine putt and

:40:09. > :40:20.that is another birdie for Lexi Thompson. That is four in the last

:40:21. > :40:25.five holes. She is still a long way back, but I think she likes the look

:40:26. > :40:30.of it. Oh, I don't think it skipped out. Another perfectly placed tee

:40:31. > :40:51.shot for Thompson. Laura Davies' fourth shot. Oh,

:40:52. > :41:13.Laura, you're ruining all that good work. Thompson for a birdie. We have

:41:14. > :41:23.seen many putts left short today. Laura started with a hooked tee

:41:24. > :41:35.shot. Hoping for a single putt to make seven.

:41:36. > :41:38.With her great length, she rather squandered a wonderful birdie

:41:39. > :41:56.opportunity there. That started poorly from the tee and

:41:57. > :42:01.then went downhill. So she has undone part of the good of her

:42:02. > :42:08.half-dozen birdies. But there is still time for a strong finish. Back

:42:09. > :42:12.to this very picturesque 14th hole. It looks much prettier when the tide

:42:13. > :42:20.is in and you are playing across the water. It looks more difficult when

:42:21. > :42:33.the tide is out. That was a well directed shot at the green. Oh, that

:42:34. > :42:39.is miles away. This is Laura's third, trying to recover from a

:42:40. > :42:52.double bogey at the last. Well played.

:42:53. > :42:55.No exciting play from Jutanugarn thus far today, but that looks

:42:56. > :43:11.better. Oh, bad run, Laura. 12 for the last

:43:12. > :43:48.two holes. It is doing its best... Good effort.

:43:49. > :43:55.Look at that sweet baby. Remind me of that horror film The Fly. I had

:43:56. > :44:09.nightmares for years, and he is coming at you. He's going to get

:44:10. > :44:14.you. Oh, my good lord. She's done it. So she moves to 1-under par.

:44:15. > :44:21.That is her third birdie of the day. She has had a couple of bogeys in

:44:22. > :44:22.the risk. STUDIO: A nice birdie from Ariya Jutanugarn, the world number

:44:23. > :44:51.three. There are five South Koreans in the

:44:52. > :45:00.top ten including Inbee Park. Charley Hull at the 14th. That was a

:45:01. > :46:23.corker. Well played. A test here for

:46:24. > :46:44.Charley. Gosh, she does rattle those in. By Jove.

:46:45. > :47:08.Whoops. A rather ugly six at the par-5.

:47:09. > :47:23.Jutanugarn birdied the last. Now trying to repeat that feat.

:47:24. > :47:30.Those two birdies move Ariya Jutanugarn to 2-under. First thing

:47:31. > :47:32.this morning, there was hardly a cloud in the sky but it has clouded

:47:33. > :47:51.up more recently. The 14th, the par-3, has been a

:47:52. > :47:55.tough hole all day. Michelle will be launching a high, floating shot into

:47:56. > :48:06.it. Look at this for a beauty, using the contours. That was a gem. 16,

:48:07. > :48:10.she fashions her second into that and the putting stroke is looking

:48:11. > :48:29.very secure. Another birdie on the card. Look at this baby. Perfect,

:48:30. > :48:33.just enough grab on it. Onto the last, and this to finish with her

:48:34. > :48:42.third consecutive birdie. In she rolls. Is home in 38 under par, 64

:48:43. > :48:58.and top of the leaderboard and all smiles. After a short rain delay, we

:48:59. > :49:08.are back in action again. You don't want to go left on this pin. I

:49:09. > :49:21.thought she had it. My goodness, a little bit unlucky.

:49:22. > :49:42.Has Charley Hull Gonnet? She has. -- she has done it.

:49:43. > :49:51.Laura Davies had few problems on the way home. Can she finish in style?

:49:52. > :49:54.That was well recovered. She will have mixed feelings about that, but

:49:55. > :50:09.on the whole she have to be pleased with that. This must be hugging the

:50:10. > :50:15.flag. Lovely shot. She will have that for a birdie. So there is a

:50:16. > :50:43.look at the state of play. It is incredible, your 37th

:50:44. > :50:48.consecutive Women's British Open. How do you feel coming to the event

:50:49. > :50:52.now? Do you have the same buzz you had them? Absolutely. I remember the

:50:53. > :50:58.first one at Wentworth, near where I lived. I was an amateur. I only

:50:59. > :51:02.missed four, so not a bad effort, I suppose. I still have the same

:51:03. > :51:05.excitement to come and do well. I am under no illusions about winning,

:51:06. > :51:11.but I would love to have a good week and try and scare the leaders of it.

:51:12. > :51:15.But it is hard to beat them. We wish you all the best.

:51:16. > :51:29.There's nothing like a dame. Well, from one English starter one in the

:51:30. > :51:40.making. A good effort from Hull for her birdie on 17. An important putt

:51:41. > :51:42.for Charley. She hasn't dropped a shot today. That was a poor 3-part,

:51:43. > :52:15.leading to her first bogey. Back to the relative calm of the

:52:16. > :52:26.14th and the scenic par-3. And another Englishwoman going well,

:52:27. > :52:43.Ewart Shadoff. Charley, don't hit it too hard. She has hit a lot of good

:52:44. > :52:55.tee shots today, I have to say. Go on. That just trickled into the

:52:56. > :53:06.rough. A fine shot over the flag on 18 leaves this. But she hasn't hit

:53:07. > :53:17.it. It's a very impressive opening round from the young Englishwoman.

:53:18. > :53:18.Bogey free for Georgia Hall. Charley Hull is the only player out playing

:53:19. > :53:34.at the moment. I believe you have had a few tips

:53:35. > :53:40.from Gary Player in the lead up to the tournament. What did he say and

:53:41. > :53:43.did you use any of it? He said you should never feel sorry for yourself

:53:44. > :53:50.and never give up. So a few times, you get a bit low, but I never gave

:53:51. > :53:58.up. I kept trying. With my putting, he said to always keep my head down.

:53:59. > :54:02.And it is working. Charley Hull's second was fired over the flag.

:54:03. > :54:28.Didn't work its way down to the hole. Downhill putt for birdie.

:54:29. > :54:33.Lexi is the only one of this group who hasn't yet reached the world

:54:34. > :54:45.number one spot. She is number two at the moment. I don't think it will

:54:46. > :55:06.be long until she joins the others. Oh, Charley.

:55:07. > :55:10.Nicely done on one of the better afternoon rounds, tougher than it

:55:11. > :55:22.was this morning. The defending champion, finishing

:55:23. > :55:40.off her opening round. Tremendous lot of hugging going on.

:55:41. > :55:45.First thing this morning, there was hardly a breath of wind. I was

:55:46. > :55:48.wandering down the West sands of St Andrews. Dead still this afternoon.

:55:49. > :55:56.There has been a fair breeze and it is a bit chilly. It is very early

:55:57. > :56:01.days, but what will be key to coming back tomorrow and continuing to push

:56:02. > :56:05.in the right direction? It is all weather dependent, really, but just

:56:06. > :56:10.focusing on my targets and doing the same thing I did today and being

:56:11. > :56:25.relaxed between shots. Wish you all the best. A couple of three putts

:56:26. > :56:32.avoided the fairway bunker. Not bad. It has been a long old afternoon.

:56:33. > :56:38.Charley has battled away well. Just got to keep her concentration. The

:56:39. > :56:46.rain is coming in sideways, and Charley's attempt at birdie on 18.

:56:47. > :56:59.She was on the march. I thought she knew she had missed it. It all adds

:57:00. > :57:02.up to 68, going along so nicely. Challenging conditions for the

:57:03. > :57:08.afternoon starters. Charley Hull is one of those in she is with Eilidh.

:57:09. > :57:11.How do you feel you are placed going into tomorrow? You are well

:57:12. > :57:17.positioned. What is key tomorrow and how do you feel you are placed? I

:57:18. > :57:20.think I have just got to stay patient, like I did today with the

:57:21. > :57:23.weather. I don't know what the weather will be like tomorrow, but

:57:24. > :57:29.hopefully it will be more,. I am looking forward to it. Charley Hull

:57:30. > :57:31.was one of many have been from all good things tomorrow, but the one

:57:32. > :58:09.they need to catch is Michelle wee. So women's golf at its finest today

:58:10. > :58:19.and there is plenty more sport to come on the BBC. We are back with a

:58:20. > :58:26.two of the Ricoh Women's British Open at 11.05 on BBC Two, 1130 5pm

:58:27. > :58:31.in Scotland. It is Michelle Wie you leads the way after day one here at

:58:32. > :58:34.the Women's British Open. A sensational 64 in the morning

:58:35. > :58:39.sunshine of Kingsbarns. But they are queueing up behind her. What drama

:58:40. > :58:50.will pay to bring? Hope you can join us to find out. Bye-bye.
