:00:06. > :00:10.It is great to be back, a little bit later than normal, but worth

:00:10. > :00:20.staying up for, I promise, as we discussed the health of the game in

:00:20. > :00:27.

:00:27. > :00:34.Tonight, my biggest challenge. Southend United manager on life

:00:34. > :00:38.with Parkinson's. It is an important part of being a man.

:00:38. > :00:42.After Fabrice Muamba, father's memories and his call for mandatory

:00:42. > :00:47.heart screening in football. If he had been screened, he would have

:00:47. > :00:52.had the choice to carry on playing football or to say that he had

:00:52. > :00:58.finished. And look who is back. The former

:00:58. > :01:03.Norwich star's Premier League return, playing for Arsenal.

:01:03. > :01:11.can't believe it! I feel sick. Good evening and welcome to Late

:01:11. > :01:18.Kick Off. I did wonder if Perry would have his Arsenal 2 shirt on.

:01:18. > :01:24.He thinks that injured him? I had to work for that one! Good evening,

:01:24. > :01:28.Dave, as well. A quick word about your iPad application? He was not

:01:28. > :01:35.keen on it last time. I am trying to save paper but it looks like

:01:36. > :01:41.there is a Brazilian rainforest full of notes for him tonight!

:01:41. > :01:44.First tonight, football managing is a tough enough job at the best of

:01:44. > :01:48.times, but Paul Sturrock has more of a challenge than most. He has

:01:48. > :01:50.suffered from Parkinson's for more than a decade but it has not

:01:50. > :01:55.stopped him bringing a smile back to his club.

:01:55. > :02:04.He has been the boss for two seasons. And he still has a spring

:02:04. > :02:10.in his step. Is that three changes? You don't believe in not changing a

:02:10. > :02:14.winning side? It has gone the other way tonight. Quick to crack a joke,

:02:14. > :02:19.share a smile, but this jovial exterior masks a steely

:02:19. > :02:23.determination to succeed. He has managed the seven clubs, endured

:02:23. > :02:28.five promotions, he has been in charge here for 100 games, and

:02:28. > :02:32.before kick-off he is as busy as ever. Building teams is what I

:02:32. > :02:37.really enjoyed, building a team strong enough for promotion.

:02:37. > :02:41.inherited a club in turmoil. Tax debts, winding-up orders,

:02:41. > :02:46.administration looming. They were in a mess. When I got here, they

:02:46. > :02:50.had been relegated. There were nine players at the first training

:02:50. > :02:55.session. Then five of them moved on, quite rightly, because of the

:02:55. > :03:00.finance we chat to be sorted out. They were on big money. We finished

:03:00. > :03:06.up with four players. Was it a challenge that he relished? I don't

:03:06. > :03:11.think anybody has tasted the situation like that, where two days

:03:11. > :03:16.into the job you are scrambling to get players in. It was a challenge,

:03:16. > :03:22.something that I really enjoyed. Life as Southend manager may well

:03:22. > :03:30.be a challenge. It is what Paul Sturrock thrives on. 12 years ago,

:03:30. > :03:35.his life changed for good. It is an appropriate time to disclose

:03:35. > :03:41.something. I have Parkinson's disease. He had kept it quiet for

:03:41. > :03:46.eight years. The club doctors of all of the club that I managed new

:03:46. > :03:51.and by coaching staff, other than that it was family and some friends.

:03:51. > :03:55.I started to get a flicker in my left leg. There were some signs

:03:55. > :04:00.that people were starting to notice so I did feel it was appropriate to

:04:00. > :04:05.come out at the right time. You asked yourself sometimes if it will

:04:05. > :04:13.affect you getting a job and it probably has in the past. To be

:04:13. > :04:16.fair, it has never affected me. It does not affect this, which is an

:04:16. > :04:20.important part of being a manager. When you are diagnosed, we are

:04:20. > :04:24.concerned that it would affect your ability to manage? You ask all

:04:24. > :04:28.those questions. The first thing you ask is if you can die from it.

:04:28. > :04:38.That is the first thing that flashes through your mind and bang

:04:38. > :04:38.

:04:38. > :04:46.for you cannot. It gets worse as it goes on. -- thankfully you cannot.

:04:46. > :04:49.People are cat Muhammed Ali. That is severe Parkinson's. -- people

:04:49. > :04:53.look at Muhammad Ali. I have got mild Parkinson's and I feel

:04:53. > :04:58.confident that I can do the job. Parkinson's is a progressive

:04:58. > :05:01.disease of the central nervous system. Diagnosed at 43, he is now

:05:01. > :05:09.55 and needs regular medication and to strike a balance between work

:05:09. > :05:13.and rest. I have got good coaching lieutenant. He works really hard

:05:13. > :05:17.behind the scenes, organising everything. He takes some of the

:05:17. > :05:21.legwork of me at times. When you have had it as long as me, 12 or 14

:05:21. > :05:29.years, you really know what you can and cannot do. Did the illness

:05:29. > :05:33.deter you from appointing him? was a consideration. We did a lot

:05:33. > :05:36.of investigation before we interviewed him. We were satisfied

:05:36. > :05:44.that his illness had been stable for a number of years, through

:05:44. > :05:49.medication. And I have not seen one iota of change in him. He certainly

:05:49. > :05:55.has not deteriorated. If anything, now he has settled into the area,

:05:55. > :06:01.he is extremely comfortable and even more buoyant. Paul Sturrock.

:06:01. > :06:05.He gets the shot! He only played for one club, Dundee United. 16

:06:06. > :06:09.years' service, he still supports them now. His managerial career

:06:09. > :06:14.began at St Johnstone in the early 90s. His first Championship

:06:14. > :06:17.followed, and then an inevitable return to Tannadice. You have got a

:06:17. > :06:22.hard-working manager that will give everything he has got and realises

:06:22. > :06:26.the potential of the football club. From there, a surprising switch to

:06:26. > :06:29.Plymouth, within the near total transformation and the title. Then

:06:29. > :06:37.the Premier League in Southampton. Promotions at Sheffield Wednesday

:06:37. > :06:40.and Swindon. Then returning to Home Park. When you look back at your

:06:40. > :06:49.career as a player and the manager, which gives you greater

:06:49. > :06:54.satisfaction? As a player, playing in one of the World Cup, I went to

:06:54. > :06:59.two, and I got a taste in the first one and I played two Games in

:06:59. > :07:07.Mexico, that is the pinnacle of your career. 20 caps for Scotland.

:07:07. > :07:14.Proud moments? I was told that if Kenny Dalglish was injured, I would

:07:14. > :07:19.play. He got 110 and I got 20. He was not injured very often! Would

:07:19. > :07:22.you like to go on in management for very many years? I love managing

:07:22. > :07:30.football clubs, I love coaching, I love the games, I don't think I can

:07:30. > :07:34.do much else. I have to be involved in football. I feel great. Yes, I

:07:34. > :07:38.think I would like to continue this as long as I can.

:07:38. > :07:43.Quite a character, Paul Sturrock. He has not let it bother him. It

:07:43. > :07:52.does not get him down. The King at his waistcoat! To be fair, he was

:07:52. > :07:55.very honest when he said that he considered the illness. I actually

:07:55. > :08:02.think, being a football manager, the others probably helps his

:08:02. > :08:06.burgers. They need an experienced manager. -- probably helps his

:08:06. > :08:10.focus. He kept it quiet because he thought it would affect his chances

:08:10. > :08:13.of getting a job. Yes, and he obviously had to deal with that

:08:14. > :08:17.when he was the only person that you about it. Now it is out in the

:08:17. > :08:23.open. He has proven that he has been a successful manager over the

:08:23. > :08:27.years. And some player as well. bad on your CV if you are Kenny

:08:27. > :08:30.Dalglish's stuntman, the greatest Scottish player of all time. He is

:08:31. > :08:35.doing a great job at Southend but he did not get the result in the

:08:35. > :08:39.101st game at the weekend. They are struggling for goals. They have not

:08:39. > :08:44.scored in five games. They took Freddie Eastwood on board to see if

:08:44. > :08:49.that would give them a lift. They worked really hard and on the day

:08:49. > :08:53.they put in a good shift. Bristol Rovers at the weekend. That is

:08:53. > :09:00.quite a signing, Freddie Eastwood. That has never been a penalty, by

:09:00. > :09:07.the way. Referee have to look at himself. I think he just slips.

:09:07. > :09:12.That is definitely a home penalty. Matt Harrold late in the game, that

:09:12. > :09:16.did not give Southend much chance to get back into it. Paul Sturrock

:09:16. > :09:19.will be disappointed after that. They battled really hard and

:09:19. > :09:23.created some half chances. They just need to get back on the

:09:23. > :09:29.scoresheet. Getting Freddie Eastwood, that is quite a coup.

:09:29. > :09:33.They sold him for 1.2 million. has been brilliant over the years.

:09:33. > :09:37.He has scored goals and he has gone up through the divisions. Getting

:09:37. > :09:42.him back in as a proven goalscorer can only do them good at the end of

:09:42. > :09:52.the season. Looking at the league table, they are outside but top

:09:52. > :09:55.

:09:55. > :09:59.three, the automatic promotion spot. three? Yes, they have a game

:09:59. > :10:06.against Charlton and that will be a great chance for them. There is

:10:06. > :10:15.confirmation of that game. Cheltenham. Another big game for

:10:15. > :10:21.Northampton at the other end of the fans are very happy with the job

:10:21. > :10:25.that Boothroyd is doing at the moment. He has brought some relief

:10:25. > :10:29.to the squad with some great signings and loans. There were some

:10:29. > :10:33.players that were not up to the cut. The turnaround has come from

:10:33. > :10:38.players that wanted to play for the club. He seems to have lifted the

:10:38. > :10:43.players' spirit and has instilled confidence slowly but surely.

:10:43. > :10:51.a great manager. If he had come with us at the beginning of the

:10:51. > :11:00.season, we would not be in this situation now. That player was not

:11:00. > :11:04.fit enough to come off the bench. That is a shame. It was important

:11:04. > :11:08.that they did not get beaten by Plymouth. Boothroyd said that

:11:08. > :11:12.Plymouth came and parked the bus, which you expect in those

:11:12. > :11:17.relegation battles sometimes. will be happy to have gone to

:11:18. > :11:27.Northampton and got the draw at least. Northampton have been in

:11:28. > :11:29.

:11:29. > :11:33.great form, 13 points out of voting. They are keeping clean sheets.

:11:33. > :11:38.13 points out of 18. You need experienced players to help

:11:38. > :11:46.everybody else. And the fans. The biggest crowd was there. That helps.

:11:47. > :11:56.They all turn out and support the local team if they feel that is

:11:57. > :11:57.

:11:57. > :12:07.needed. And a little bit of luck? That was a brilliant free-kick.

:12:07. > :12:11.

:12:11. > :12:14.at the moment. Plymouth parking the bus is a complement to Northampton.

:12:14. > :12:17.Let's look at them in the table. They were bottom at the start of

:12:17. > :12:24.March and they have climbed up to 18th, five points clear of

:12:24. > :12:28.relegation. They had two massive away wins at Burton Albion and

:12:28. > :12:34.Dagenham & Redbridge, which enabled that gap. Boothroyd has done a good

:12:34. > :12:37.job, hasn't he? That is no surprise. I know the enthusiasm that he

:12:37. > :12:42.brings to the playing staff and the whole club. They will be focused on

:12:42. > :12:46.staying up. Plenty more still to come. Everybody wishes Fabrice

:12:46. > :12:49.Muamba of full recovery, but a reminder that other people were not

:12:49. > :12:53.so lucky. 20 years since David Longhurst died

:12:53. > :12:57.after collapsing on the pitch, his father renews calls for mandatory

:12:57. > :13:02.heart screening. I cannot understand why in 22 years they

:13:02. > :13:06.have not done more to try to prevent it. That is all still to

:13:06. > :13:11.come. Now enter the Championship, and Peter Brooke fresh from putting

:13:11. > :13:15.an end to Reading's unbeaten run. They could not continue their form

:13:15. > :13:19.against Barnsley. They would have gone in with confidence because

:13:19. > :13:27.Barnsley had not scored a goal in some time and their away form is

:13:27. > :13:30.quite bad. The word is inconsistent, isn't it? They beat Reading,

:13:30. > :13:35.challenging for automatic promotion, and then they lose against Barnsley.

:13:35. > :13:37.That sums them up. This is brilliant technique here, from

:13:37. > :13:42.David Cotterill, but that is because Barnsley like to put their

:13:43. > :13:50.players for what. Away from home they need to be more difficult to

:13:50. > :13:55.beat. -- put their players forward. This tackle is horrendous. What do

:13:55. > :13:59.you think? He has got no interest in the ball and he is just taking

:13:59. > :14:05.that man out and he has succeeded. Sometimes it is easier to get

:14:05. > :14:13.yourself up for the games that are way. A decent chance for Sinclair.

:14:13. > :14:16.But that challenge before... Down Ferguson was not happy.

:14:16. > :14:26.acceptable, simple as that. If you drop your standards, that is what

:14:26. > :14:28.

:14:29. > :14:32.too angry to cheek -- speak to the chairman after that. Back would not

:14:32. > :14:36.be a good coach journey back. They have to set themselves up to be

:14:36. > :14:40.more difficult. They have enough points and they are safe but they

:14:40. > :14:46.need to look for an improvement next year. Ipswich also on their

:14:46. > :14:50.travels. What about the weekend did not go to plan. A great start.

:14:50. > :14:54.created a load of chances. They could have been three up in the

:14:54. > :14:58.first half but you have to make sure you capitalise on times when

:14:58. > :15:05.you a pint in the ascendancy. Darren Murphy had that chance and

:15:05. > :15:11.he was the goal. God knows what he is doing at the far post. They

:15:11. > :15:17.deserve to have gone one up. games in eight years without a win

:15:17. > :15:21.against them. Sometimes that happens. Sometimes there is a team

:15:21. > :15:25.that she cannot crack and it seems to be that way for these two.

:15:25. > :15:30.Michael Chopra does Brearley. He has run 40 yards. The form he in

:15:30. > :15:35.his in in. He tried to take it with his left for the. May be you can

:15:35. > :15:41.blame the pitch, it was awful apparently. It is difficult if you

:15:42. > :15:51.need to play a free-flowing game. Delaney got caught. He was robbed.

:15:52. > :15:55.

:15:55. > :15:59.It puts Watford back in the game. Chris Iwelumo came on a made a

:15:59. > :16:04.difference. A specially for an experienced player. Clear your

:16:04. > :16:08.lines. He has always been a handful. He is a big player. You can bring

:16:08. > :16:16.him in off the fence and you would not want to see him. What about

:16:16. > :16:20.that? It is not bad. Doyle is an experienced player. It is taking a

:16:20. > :16:26.chance. There it is again. That was quite nonchalant. He could have

:16:27. > :16:32.brought it down and played end from the back. Crowe was suspended by he

:16:32. > :16:35.will be back tomorrow. He is in good goalscoring form. Ipswich made

:16:35. > :16:39.sure they were safe. I would not be surprised if you see some young

:16:39. > :16:44.players coming and you get them tried out. Let us have a look at

:16:44. > :16:48.the table. Ipswich are well clear. They are even looking at the play-

:16:49. > :16:53.offs before the weekend defeat. Peterborough are nine points clear

:16:53. > :17:00.as well, do you think they are reasonably safe? I cannot see the

:17:00. > :17:03.bottom three teams are winning several games. Ipswich at home to

:17:03. > :17:06.Middlesbrough Peter Brett home to West Ham will be a cracker.

:17:06. > :17:12.West Ham game will have goals in it and Middlesbrough are not in good

:17:12. > :17:14.form. It is a greater chance. Fabrice Muamba has been the big

:17:14. > :17:20.story in football over the past week. He is recovering after

:17:20. > :17:24.collapsing on the pitch at White Hart Lane. More than 20 years ago

:17:24. > :17:29.David Longhurst died in similar circumstances. His father who lives

:17:29. > :17:35.in Corby today repeated his calls for heart screens to become

:17:35. > :17:38.mandatory in football, whatever the cost. The images from White Hart

:17:38. > :17:43.Lane last week sent shockwaves through the football world. Players

:17:43. > :17:46.and supporters were stunned after Fabrice Muamba's collapsed during a

:17:46. > :17:51.cup tie. The incident brought back painful

:17:51. > :17:54.memories for Vic Longhurst whose son David was a former Northampton

:17:54. > :18:02.Town and Peterborough striker and he collapsed of a heart attack

:18:02. > :18:06.while playing 22 years ago. There was nothing like what has happened

:18:06. > :18:10.at the Tottenham match there. You could not put a monitor on and let

:18:10. > :18:17.that takeover your breathing and things like that one your heart.

:18:17. > :18:20.Two because in the case at York, that lad would probably have been

:18:20. > :18:25.gone. Dick Longhurst has long argued that heart screening should

:18:25. > :18:29.be as routine as physical tests for footballers and all athletes.

:18:29. > :18:35.he had been screened, he would have had the choice to carry on playing

:18:35. > :18:42.football and take that risk or say, I am finished. I cannot understand

:18:42. > :18:48.why in 20 years, 22 years at the end of this year, that they have

:18:48. > :18:52.not done more to try and prevent it. The Premier League and FA say they

:18:52. > :18:57.are reviewing policy on heart screening. The players' union

:18:57. > :19:01.insists lessons must be learnt from the Fabrice Muamba that incident,

:19:01. > :19:05.calling for annual tests whatever the cost. The annual process is

:19:05. > :19:09.something that we will be wanting to implement and that has to be

:19:09. > :19:12.assessed and it must be made sure it is affordable for the likes of

:19:12. > :19:17.Plymouth and Northampton who are at the bottom of League Two because we

:19:17. > :19:25.know we shall not be a problem for the guys at the top of the Premier

:19:25. > :19:29.League. Screening of players, swimmers, tennis, of Rugby the lot.

:19:29. > :19:33.Anybody who takes part in sport Anybody who takes part in sport

:19:33. > :19:37.Anybody who takes part in sport should be done.

:19:37. > :19:42.That report from Kevin Piper. How much has changed since that

:19:42. > :19:46.incident? On the back of previous episodes we have seen like Phil

:19:47. > :19:51.O'Donnell, we have seen a change in what we do now in terms of

:19:51. > :19:56.screening programmes. At the age of 16 when they come into the Academy

:19:56. > :20:01.programme they have a hot screaming. That is part of every single club

:20:01. > :20:08.in the Football League. They all have to do that. Then there is

:20:08. > :20:12.another series of tests that we do. There are physical tests in the

:20:12. > :20:17.laboratory. More than just the screening, it is the medical

:20:17. > :20:25.services that are available to players now at the stadia. You will

:20:25. > :20:29.have a paramedic and if Visio and a doctor. They are highly trained and

:20:29. > :20:32.highly experienced and they know what to deal with if a situation

:20:32. > :20:37.like this should occur. That is not just for the players but also for

:20:37. > :20:41.the supporters. Yes we have two teams, we have one that is solely

:20:41. > :20:44.based on the playing and coaching staff but we also have another team

:20:44. > :20:48.who were dedicated to the fans because you can have a similar

:20:48. > :20:54.episode happen when you are in the stadium to any of the supporters

:20:54. > :20:57.who were watching. There are calls for heart screening to become

:20:57. > :21:04.mandatory. One person says it should be twice the year. Do you

:21:04. > :21:09.agree? If you can afford it. There was a lot of money in football.

:21:09. > :21:12.happens in Italy and America. is a situation where queue is as

:21:12. > :21:16.important as prevention. The young kids in their schools and their

:21:16. > :21:21.curriculum should be doing CPR in biology lessons because it can so

:21:21. > :21:26.both people's lives. Do you think this incident will mean things will

:21:26. > :21:30.move on? Absolutely. All clubs are addressing this issue to make sure

:21:30. > :21:34.they have systems in place to deal with it. We have to take into

:21:34. > :21:42.account there are other sorts of incidents that we may have to be or

:21:42. > :21:46.where Rolf, like -- aware of, like concussion. It is up to coaching

:21:46. > :21:50.staff to be vigilant. Surely football will have learnt and no
