:00:14. > :00:21.Tonight we're live from broadcast house. It is the time when dreams

:00:21. > :00:31.can be made and hopes can be dashed. We will follow every twist and turn

:00:31. > :00:36.

:00:36. > :00:41.Coming up, they had to win, highlights of West Ham's trip to

:00:41. > :00:46.Leicester tonight. And the Crystal Palace manager joins us in the

:00:46. > :00:51.studio. Barnett hope their old dogs old tricks can keep them in the

:00:51. > :00:57.league. It is not all about Martin Allen, but the players and myself

:00:57. > :01:03.and the supporters. We pay tribute to a London football legend. Said

:01:03. > :01:09.John Steel could manage any team anywhere. Evening, the Championship

:01:09. > :01:15.season ends this Saturday. For the man joining us there is one more

:01:15. > :01:25.game to go, it is Dougy Freedman. You can tweet us your questions as

:01:25. > :01:31.well. First up West Ham, earlier they kicked off at Leicester,

:01:31. > :01:37.knowing they had to win to alive their hopes of automatic promotion.

:01:37. > :01:47.Anything less would mean the play offs and send Southampton to the

:02:54. > :03:04.promotion has suffered another dent. applause from Sam Allardyce, don't

:03:04. > :03:25.

:03:25. > :03:29.West Ham are in front. Jack Collison with a screamer. On the

:03:29. > :03:39.half-volley, West Ham take the lead for the first time tonight.

:03:39. > :03:52.

:03:52. > :03:59.Automatic promotion is still a make it 3-1. Schmeichel blocks. Of

:03:59. > :04:06.all people again, Kevin Nolan's the man you want in this position. It

:04:06. > :04:13.comes to this - West Ham have to hold on for a few seconds longer.

:04:13. > :04:17.Morgan with the header. Appeals for a penalty. But the referee saw

:04:17. > :04:22.a penalty. But the referee saw nothing wrong. Ray We stay with

:04:22. > :04:28.with a slim chance of automatic promotion. At the moment it is not

:04:28. > :04:31.in our hands. But who knows on Saturday. It is a strange old game

:04:31. > :04:37.and there are some strange results can happen. Let's hope Coventry can

:04:37. > :04:40.do us a favour and we can win on do us a favour and we can win on

:04:40. > :04:47.Saturday. Here is the table. Reading are up already. Southampton

:04:47. > :04:54.two points ahead of the Hammers. Both teams have a game to go. The

:04:54. > :04:58.Saints play Coventry and West Ham Saints play Coventry and West Ham

:04:58. > :05:03.play Hull. Lou do you rate their chances of avoiding the play offs?

:05:03. > :05:08.Well not very good to be honest. You have got to say Southampton are

:05:08. > :05:13.in the driving seat. It was a miserable March for West Ham. Eight

:05:13. > :05:19.fixtures, five draws, two wins and a loss. The five draws that the

:05:20. > :05:26.fans will look at at and it was Donk ste, Leeds, Watford, Burnley,

:05:26. > :05:30.Bristol City. Just one win would have put them in the driving seat.

:05:30. > :05:37.Reading have been in fantastic form and Southampton are just managing

:05:37. > :05:45.to stumble over the line. But West Ham fans will think there is an

:05:45. > :05:51.outside chance. But Coventry have only one wons - once away.

:05:51. > :05:57.other managers surprised West Ham didn't stay there? You have to give

:05:57. > :06:03.credit to Reading. We all had eight games in March and found it

:06:03. > :06:09.difficult. But Reading put a run together. West Ham I think, they

:06:09. > :06:14.have got to look at that March form and hold their hands up. Big Sam

:06:15. > :06:20.sat in that seat in January and said I need to get this team up

:06:20. > :06:24.automatically. Even the play offs won't be good enough for some fans.

:06:24. > :06:29.Promotion was his target. They can still do it through the play offs,

:06:29. > :06:34.but last year Swansea finished third and went up. The year before

:06:34. > :06:42.the third placed team didn't. Four out of the last seven years the

:06:42. > :06:46.third placed team have gone up. Kevin Nolan said he fancys -

:06:46. > :06:49.fancies them if they go up. But you have to go again. They know they

:06:49. > :06:53.have done everything they had to do tonight and go into the final game

:06:53. > :06:58.and they have to win. If they don't, they kick on again. They get

:06:58. > :07:06.themselves together and they have a great squad and you know, I would

:07:06. > :07:11.fancy them. Now in recent years, Barnett seem to have spent most of

:07:11. > :07:16.that time doing one of three things - fighting relegation, appointing

:07:16. > :07:26.Martin Allen as manager and then getting angry when he walks out.

:07:26. > :07:27.

:07:28. > :07:34.Here is their version of Groundhog Day. # Put your little hand in mine,

:07:34. > :07:40.there ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb. Allen has been in

:07:40. > :07:47.charge of Barnett and joined the Griffith Park outfit. I wants to

:07:47. > :07:52.coach at a higher level. I would have thought after last time he

:07:52. > :07:59.would haven't behaved in this way. They should be grateful. When I got

:07:59. > :08:05.there, that club was dead and buried. I said Martin, this is for

:08:05. > :08:08.three games, do you want the challenge or not? His answer was

:08:08. > :08:13.yes. Groundhog Day, whatever you want to call it, the man they call

:08:13. > :08:17.mad dog is back at Barnett. There was only one person who I felt

:08:17. > :08:22.could do the job in these circumstances. If you want somebody

:08:22. > :08:28.to motivate you, certainly in the short-term, there is not many

:08:28. > :08:32.managers around at any level who can do what Martin does. He won't

:08:32. > :08:40.be everything's cup of tea, but he will bring everyone together.

:08:40. > :08:45.you understand inis galling for supporters this a man wh -- who has

:08:45. > :08:50.walked out twice. Ask them what they really feel. Of course, there

:08:50. > :08:54.will be some that think there is hypocrisy going on. But you find

:08:54. > :08:59.out. So we did. Last year he was there for eight games and walked

:08:59. > :09:04.out after three and still claimed the credit for Barnett surviving.

:09:04. > :09:08.He has come back and when I heard what has lapped I thought it was an

:09:08. > :09:12.April Fool's day joke. What he has done in the past is not a concern.

:09:12. > :09:17.What he does in the future is not a concern. We have three games to

:09:17. > :09:22.save our season. That is what is important. I wouldn't have had him

:09:22. > :09:32.back. But I wish him and the club well. The priority is the safety of

:09:32. > :10:01.

:10:01. > :10:06.the club in the league. If he can How does it feel to be back for a

:10:06. > :10:11.third time? Do you feel you have a point to prove? I have got three

:10:11. > :10:15.games to try and help the club. I ain't got no point to prove to

:10:15. > :10:20.anybody. I don't live u live my life like that. I will enjoy

:10:20. > :10:24.working with the staff. Really look forward to next Saturday and gets

:10:24. > :10:34.back on the training pitch and helping the players and supporters

:10:34. > :10:38.

:10:38. > :10:41.and getting it going. He is work hard, but not the perfect start.

:10:42. > :10:48.Another season fighting relegation for Barnett. How do you rate their

:10:48. > :10:53.chances? I was looking, they lost five of the last six games, but

:10:53. > :10:56.they played the top teams. That was tough. But they're playing two

:10:56. > :11:05.teams that are mid table and you have to say they haven't got much

:11:05. > :11:10.to fight for and then the teams below them. Wimbledon and burr ton.

:11:10. > :11:16.Hereford I think have a tougher run in and play two teams at the top

:11:16. > :11:21.fighting for promotion. By default I would say Barnett should stay up.

:11:21. > :11:29.Because I don't think Hereford will pick up much against Crawley or

:11:29. > :11:38.Torquay. You're having trouble remembering the names. I know.

:11:38. > :11:43.voted the greatest player, after only one season. Bang on, yeah.Ed

:11:43. > :11:51.- How big a blow would it be? I know the chairman well he has the

:11:51. > :11:56.rate to do what he wants, he has been through thick and thin. I

:11:56. > :11:59.believe if you have a very good chance of staying in the league.

:11:59. > :12:03.Not because of Martin Allen, but what he brings before and people

:12:03. > :12:09.will look at the motivation he brings and there is a possibility

:12:09. > :12:15.he gets them to stay up. Martin brings that and I believe he will

:12:15. > :12:20.do it. We have seen West Ham and Barnett, and now seven of our other

:12:20. > :12:30.sides has something to play for whether promotion or for Charlton a

:12:30. > :12:39.

:12:39. > :12:43.title secured the next. It was a happy Valley on Saturday. This

:12:43. > :12:47.brilliantly taken free-kick sent the Addicks on their way. News of

:12:47. > :12:51.Sheffield United falling behind at MK Dons was to follow soon after.

:12:51. > :12:55.But celebrations were cut short when Stuart Bevan ordered in to

:12:55. > :13:01.level the scores. They need of points was even greater than their

:13:01. > :13:09.hosts. Despite dominating the second half, they couldn't hold on.

:13:09. > :13:13.Substitute Dale Stevens got the winner just after coming on.

:13:13. > :13:22.Wycombe, three points adrift with two to play. But for Charlton, the

:13:22. > :13:26.celebrations could begin. They were well on course for just their

:13:26. > :13:30.second home win of the year when Kevin Liz be headed in for his 11th

:13:30. > :13:34.goal of the season. A win would have put Russell Slade's men on the

:13:34. > :13:42.brink of safety. They looked set for the three points when Campbell-

:13:43. > :13:47.Ryce powered down. But Liz be doubled their advantage. With only

:13:47. > :13:56.eight minutes to play, Yeovil found a way back into the game. Andrew

:13:56. > :14:06.Williams sweeping home to halve the deficit. Then in stoppage time, the

:14:06. > :14:16.

:14:16. > :14:24.Brentford, both missed. First, Clayton Donaldson hit the bar. Then

:14:24. > :14:28.Sam Saunders was denied by Chris Day. The Bees the chances of

:14:28. > :14:33.reaching the play-offs then took a huge blow as they fell behind to a

:14:33. > :14:38.Craig Reid strike. And Luke Freeman made it two for Stevenage with this

:14:38. > :14:43.long-range effort. Saunders atoned for his miss from 12 yards with a

:14:43. > :14:49.free-kick from nearly 25. But the Bees are now five before it - that

:14:49. > :14:58.five points behind Stevenage, who occupied the final play-off place.

:14:58. > :15:05.Promotion and survival were of equal concern at Victoria Road. The

:15:05. > :15:08.daggers came back and in some style, thanks to Billy Bingham. The. Kept

:15:08. > :15:16.Dagenham in the Football League and Crawley in the final automatic

:15:16. > :15:19.promotion place. Gillingham refused to give up on their play-off dream,

:15:19. > :15:24.taking on table toppers Winneden. Danny Kedwell flipped his side into

:15:25. > :15:28.the lead with a looping header. The determination and will Tasadiq

:15:28. > :15:35.doubled their advantage. No one is quite sure if he meant it or not.

:15:35. > :15:44.Not that it matters. Alan McCormack made the final 10 minutes a nervy

:15:44. > :15:51.affair for the home fans. But whelk Dale sealed the win from the spot

:15:51. > :15:55.to keep the deals in 7th place. -- the gales. Gillingham's promotion

:15:55. > :16:02.hopes are still alive. They released the first images of their

:16:02. > :16:06.planned 15,000 seater new stadium. Not your usual new stadium shots.

:16:06. > :16:10.There's the mascot. It will be close to the training ground if it

:16:10. > :16:20.goes ahead. But the path ahead to bring these plans to reality will

:16:20. > :16:21.

:16:21. > :16:24.Let's talk Palace. Lots of questions for you. First table,

:16:24. > :16:29.first full season in charge. Mid- table safety at the minute. How

:16:29. > :16:33.would you assess it with one game to go? It's been a fantastic season

:16:33. > :16:36.for us. The mentality around the place is different. Now we've got a

:16:36. > :16:40.winning mentality, not of lately but certainly of the relegation

:16:40. > :16:45.battles we've had over the last few seasons. Now we are looking forward

:16:45. > :16:49.instead of backwards, which is pleasing. It has been a good season.

:16:49. > :16:53.Disappointing towards the end but there's many reasons for that. We

:16:53. > :17:02.are building for the future, not just for the short term this time.

:17:02. > :17:07.In the last game you managed to book Reading's party a little bit.

:17:07. > :17:11.We went to Reading and played well. A fantastic build-up. I think there

:17:11. > :17:17.A fantastic build-up. I think there were 25 passes involved there. A

:17:17. > :17:22.Reading came very strong. They were trying to win the championship.

:17:23. > :17:27.Reading, the power that they've got, especially for two headed goals

:17:27. > :17:33.that are difficult. This is a difficult one for me because I know

:17:33. > :17:39.young to Jonathan Parr... It was accidental. The power and the pace

:17:39. > :17:45.they have got. We came back a very strong. I think we outplayed them

:17:45. > :17:49.for most of the game. Glen Murray got a deserted goal in the end. All

:17:49. > :17:54.in all, good for us. Johnny Wellens has come through this season, Kyle

:17:54. > :17:58.da Silva. The youth policy is excellent at the club. How

:17:58. > :18:02.important Willerby to hang on to Clyne and Zaha? It's not really my

:18:02. > :18:08.job to decide we are going to hang onto them. It's my job to produce

:18:08. > :18:11.them. This season, I felt we produced Wilfried Zaha, the best

:18:11. > :18:15.player in the temperature by a million miles. We will produce

:18:15. > :18:19.Johnny Williams next year. That has been the highlight of my season. I

:18:19. > :18:24.think that is what I was brought to the club to do, to change the

:18:24. > :18:27.mentality, to have a good feeling fact that for people to take its

:18:27. > :18:31.serious. But also to produce fantastic young players that will

:18:31. > :18:33.go on to play international football. I on Twitter, do you

:18:33. > :18:38.football. I on Twitter, do you think in the run in the Carling Cup,

:18:38. > :18:42.which he enjoyed, prevented you from getting in the play-offs?

:18:42. > :18:46.didn't think it helped us. I didn't think we have got the strong enough

:18:46. > :18:51.squad. The time wasn't right. We are recruiting team and growing

:18:52. > :18:55.club. That was a fantastic occasion, the Carling Cup. Especially up at

:18:55. > :18:59.Man Utd and the two card games for experience for the club. I wouldn't

:18:59. > :19:02.say it was the only factor stopping us. We've got to build a strong

:19:02. > :19:06.enough squad to go in there. But while it was going on it was

:19:06. > :19:11.fantastic. It was good for the club to get that exposure and get the

:19:11. > :19:15.young players through. Add a couple of quid for the club. A comment

:19:16. > :19:22.from Dan Winter on Twitter. He says, I don't have a question for Dougie,

:19:22. > :19:26.can you just tell him I love him. That is nice to hear! Like Crystal

:19:26. > :19:36.Palace, four of our other teams didn't have much to play for on

:19:36. > :19:40.

:19:41. > :19:46.Saturday. Caroline and Chris are genuine relegation candidates. But

:19:46. > :19:50.they've now 15 on the spin. Andy Keogh opened the scoring with a

:19:50. > :19:56.little help from Tommy Smith. It got even better when Liam Trotter

:19:56. > :19:59.slammed home a half clearance to double the Lions' lead. The

:19:59. > :20:03.Millwall keeper produced his second penalty save in five days, before

:20:03. > :20:12.Keogh rounded Barrett and rounded off the scoring to move Millwall up

:20:12. > :20:17.to 16. Brighton, now without a win in seven, and their hopes of taking

:20:17. > :20:20.three points from their final home game of the season took a blow,

:20:20. > :20:24.when Birmingham Academy product Nathan Redmond let fly. With six

:20:24. > :20:29.minutes remaining, the Seagulls ensured they would at least avoid

:20:29. > :20:38.defeat. Ashley Barnes sleeping -- sweeping home his 14th of

:20:38. > :20:42.unimpressive season. -- of an impressive season. Lee Tomlin

:20:42. > :20:51.played against a run of play which dominated the first half at London

:20:51. > :20:54.Road. They deservedly drew level. Wasted opportunities would come

:20:54. > :20:59.back to haunt the Hornets, but Sean Murray put them ahead with his

:20:59. > :21:03.second goal in five days. How is this for a well-worked corner? Paul

:21:03. > :21:10.Taylor applying the finish. Watford were held to a fourth consecutive

:21:10. > :21:14.draw. You suffer only made it onto the bench after Wimbledon back of

:21:14. > :21:19.keeper Jack Warner was injured in the warm-up. But in the driving

:21:19. > :21:23.rain at King's Medal, the super sub came on to put the Dons ahead. As

:21:23. > :21:27.the clouds cleared, George Mann KERS sealed the points. A win

:21:27. > :21:37.against promotion-chasing Torquay also doing the Dons former non-

:21:37. > :21:39.

:21:39. > :21:43.Not MK Dons, by the way. Excuse me, FC. Football would be nothing

:21:43. > :21:46.without the fans, but these days it's rare to see a packed stadium

:21:46. > :21:51.outside the Premier League. In the age of austerity, we have been

:21:51. > :21:57.finding out about the challenges facing our Football League clubs as

:21:57. > :22:00.they look to keep the fans coming through the turnstiles. They're

:22:00. > :22:04.almost 23,000 fans here at Brighton today. They are one of the very few

:22:04. > :22:06.teams in the Football League that sell-out every week. Football

:22:06. > :22:10.League attendances as a whole have been falling, and that has meant

:22:10. > :22:15.some clubs have had to come up with new ways to try and bring fans into

:22:15. > :22:20.grounds. If you look across the four professional leagues over the

:22:21. > :22:25.last four years, we've seen a slight decline in attendances of

:22:25. > :22:28.about 400,000. Maybe that is due to the economy. But when you go down

:22:29. > :22:33.lower, at the Premiership is quite insulated, not surprisingly, but it

:22:33. > :22:37.is when you go to championship's and Leagues One and Two that you

:22:37. > :22:42.start to see some of the fans drifting away. In a competitive

:22:42. > :22:45.catchment area, Millwall have had the lowest average gates out of any

:22:45. > :22:50.of the London championship sides this season. But they have made

:22:50. > :22:54.concerted efforts in recent times to draw in new fans. Like most

:22:54. > :22:58.football League clubs, we Ra family club. What we've done over the last

:22:58. > :23:02.couple of years is changed the family area and concentrate on

:23:02. > :23:06.bringing more families to the ground. We have changed this

:23:06. > :23:10.section we are in now to a more family friendly one, in terms of

:23:10. > :23:14.the foot offered and the facilities. The famously took 45,000 to Wembley

:23:14. > :23:18.for the play-off final. I fully understand that when most people

:23:18. > :23:22.playing big finals they take a big support. But the key to us is

:23:22. > :23:25.getting some of those occasional fans here more often. It is

:23:25. > :23:29.challenging but of course we'd like to have another 3000 on our Gade on

:23:29. > :23:34.a regular basis, because that really would impact on the Budget

:23:34. > :23:39.that the manager has got to put better players on the pitch. Clubs

:23:39. > :23:43.have got to really understand to their fans are. And then

:23:43. > :23:46.specifically communicate to them with things that they want to hear.

:23:46. > :23:51.We see some clubs to put out a lot of information but it is focused on

:23:51. > :23:54.one key group, the diehard fans who will come week in week out anyway.

:23:54. > :23:58.It is about looking at the occasional Farnes. They are the

:23:58. > :24:01.people they really have to get to. And then they need to enhance the

:24:01. > :24:05.experience for fans. That is where a new stadium can have issued

:24:05. > :24:08.benefit. Brighton are one club who have benefited from having a new

:24:08. > :24:13.stadium. The basic it is no just the facilities that are bringing in

:24:13. > :24:18.the fans. We are now opening hours Stadium at 1pm, so people can come

:24:18. > :24:22.in, eat and get foot early. We keep the stadium open after the match.

:24:22. > :24:25.Tonight, we will still be open at 11pm in one of the areas. They are

:24:26. > :24:29.entitled to feel they are being well treated. At the end of the day,

:24:29. > :24:32.people will spend money on something that is good. So the

:24:32. > :24:35.product of football has to be better than anything else. And

:24:35. > :24:39.there isn't anything like being at a live football match. Watching it

:24:39. > :24:45.on telly isn't the same. It all goes well, Brighton could be

:24:45. > :24:48.playing in front of 30,000 here at the Amex next season. With 3500 on

:24:48. > :24:52.the waiting list, they certainly have the demand to fill the ground.

:24:52. > :24:56.But for now, it seems like they are one of the lucky few.

:24:56. > :25:00.I should say a big thank you do both Brighton and Millwall in that.

:25:00. > :25:04.Dougie, you've done three family days where kids get in for a quid.

:25:04. > :25:07.Does it make a difference? It makes a difference to the stadium because

:25:08. > :25:11.there's more of an atmosphere. It's a great idea and we embrace that.

:25:11. > :25:15.Making sure the community travels in the same direction we are going

:25:15. > :25:18.in. Inviting the kids in, making sure it's a family day and it's

:25:18. > :25:23.something to look forward to on Saturday afternoons. The Palace

:25:23. > :25:27.fans a broken our Twitter account tonight. Where do you see the club

:25:27. > :25:31.this time next year? Moving forward. Who knows where we are going to be,

:25:31. > :25:35.you never can tell. As long as we keep moving forward. I would like

:25:35. > :25:38.to take bigger strides but that is not the way football goes. As long

:25:38. > :25:42.as we stay in a financial situation where we are strong, because I've

:25:42. > :25:45.been at this club twice in administration, as long as we can

:25:45. > :25:52.keep bringing the young players through and adding one Lord two

:25:52. > :25:56.bits of quality. Charlie Cavendish, who is not an MK Dons fan, says,

:25:56. > :26:00.what would be the highlight of your season? Many highlights for

:26:00. > :26:03.different reasons. Me, being the person I am, it is pretty much

:26:03. > :26:06.bringing the team together and getting their youngsters through.

:26:07. > :26:11.I'm not going to tell you how well I've done in terms of producing

:26:11. > :26:15.players, but it has got to do with the Academy, all the coaching. We

:26:15. > :26:18.spend a lot of time coaching. That is the highlight, bringing young

:26:18. > :26:22.players through. People that can look at their mum and dad in the

:26:22. > :26:26.eye and say, your kit has got a future in the game. I'm within the

:26:26. > :26:31.club as well. Do you think you've laid the foundations to move it

:26:31. > :26:34.forward? The discipline, the feel- good factor that is within the club.

:26:34. > :26:39.My aim is to take this club and build foundations. I think we are

:26:39. > :26:43.starting to do that. I wouldn't say we are concrete solid yet but we

:26:43. > :26:47.are building foundations for the future. Who knows, my manager could

:26:47. > :26:52.be here to see it through. Or I might be moving on for different

:26:52. > :26:56.reasons. That doesn't sound too good. You know what managers are

:26:56. > :26:59.like, they come and go. But what I will say is as long as they build

:26:59. > :27:05.the foundations with good, young players, financially stable, then

:27:05. > :27:14.that is my highlight. Finally, have you thought about reassembling the

:27:14. > :27:21.Palace side of the 1990s? Apparently Ian Wright is quite good.

:27:21. > :27:24.Last Thursday, it marked eight years in charge at Dagenham and

:27:24. > :27:27.Redbridge for John Still. We thought we would say Happy

:27:27. > :27:34.Anniversary from all of us here at Late Kick-Off. Good night,

:27:34. > :27:38.everybody. First of all, he's a gentleman. The second quality is he

:27:38. > :27:44.knows how to handle players. I've never seen him lose his temper.

:27:44. > :27:47.He probably has but I've never seen it. He is patient yet strong.

:27:47. > :27:50.Johnny is an amazing character. He's got such fantastic knowledge

:27:51. > :27:54.of the game, especially the lower leagues because that is where he

:27:54. > :27:59.has spent most of his time. But I've always said John Still could

:27:59. > :28:02.manage any team anywhere. There are plenty of clubs I know for a fact,

:28:02. > :28:06.higher up than what Dagenham is, who would be after him. John has

:28:06. > :28:14.taken the club a long way and everyone respects him. Wembley was

:28:14. > :28:18.the main highlight. The whole family went down, it was great.

:28:18. > :28:24.went out on the pitch playing Sheffield Wednesday, the players

:28:24. > :28:26.looked round and there was 30,000, not 2000. John conned everyone down

:28:26. > :28:34.in the dressing-room and said, you've earned the right to play on

:28:34. > :28:39.the pitch. I just admire the man. We were going down at one time, but

:28:39. > :28:44.John has picked us up. Not only has he done that, he's taken us up to

:28:44. > :28:48.the heights that his club never thought they would reach. Thank you

:28:48. > :28:52.Paul you've done for us, John. Keep it going. I don't care what anybody
