:00:17. > :00:21.A 35 yard screamer. That sparked the comeback that took us up to the

:00:21. > :00:31.championship. That is my favourite during a moment. This is a Late

:00:31. > :00:34.

:00:34. > :00:41.Kick-Off. Coming up tonight... The youth of today. Will plans to

:00:41. > :00:45.reform Academies really help make the stars of tomorrow? My concern

:00:45. > :00:49.is it's not been thought through. There is no reason for young

:00:49. > :00:51.players to want to go and be developed anywhere else. We've got

:00:51. > :00:59.the action from tonight's League One match between Brentford and

:00:59. > :01:09.Carlisle. We take to the terraces to sample the sounds of the Orient.

:01:09. > :01:09.

:01:10. > :01:12.And revisit the day Dowie dealt Hello and welcome to Late Kick Off.

:01:12. > :01:17.Alongside Mark Bright in the studio tonight we have the Millwall

:01:17. > :01:24.manager Kenny Jackett. Kenny, your FA Cup run came to an end against

:01:24. > :01:28.Bolton and you're straight back into it tomorrow. Yes, we have to

:01:28. > :01:31.get over Saturday. A big game at home to Middlesbrough on Tuesday.

:01:31. > :01:34.More from Kenny throughout the show, first tonight, when Crystal Palace

:01:34. > :01:37.met Watford over the weekend there were plenty of products from the

:01:37. > :01:40.youth system on both sides. But the two clubs have different views on

:01:40. > :01:50.whether plans to reform the Academy system will help or hinder their

:01:50. > :02:00.

:02:00. > :02:06.ability to bring on the next The elite player performance plan

:02:06. > :02:09.might sound like a government initiative, but it is a new system

:02:09. > :02:16.that will revolutionise the youth football at your club and every

:02:16. > :02:20.club across the country. Under the new system it's a fixed formula. A

:02:20. > :02:24.player that might be worth millions now could be only worth a few

:02:24. > :02:28.hundred 1000. My big concern is it's not been thought through with

:02:28. > :02:31.enough timescale and enough opinions being asked. Essentially,

:02:31. > :02:36.it's going to mean less opportunity for smaller clubs and less

:02:36. > :02:39.opportunity for younger players as well. Despite concerns, one of the

:02:39. > :02:44.chief aims of the scheme is to ensure the best players are given

:02:44. > :02:47.access to the best facilities and best coaches. At Crystal Palace,

:02:47. > :02:52.Gary is it has overseen the development of scores of youth team

:02:52. > :02:56.players have gone on to play for the first team. We've got fantastic

:02:56. > :03:00.recruitment staff here and a team of scouts that work hard trying to

:03:00. > :03:06.get the best players in South London. We've got both full-time

:03:06. > :03:10.and part-time dedicated coaches. With the scheme and its overall

:03:11. > :03:14.format, it's a very good idea. The only concerns we would have of the

:03:14. > :03:20.compensation fees that have come alongside that. They have been

:03:20. > :03:25.reduced. We recently probably got the record transfer fee for John

:03:25. > :03:29.Vostok. But we probably only get a 7th of the figure we got them.

:03:30. > :03:33.are working in a very challenging environment. We are being asked to

:03:33. > :03:38.put more money into the youth academy for less security on

:03:38. > :03:42.compensation. The Football League voted for it as a whole but we did

:03:42. > :03:47.and vote for it as a club. We accept that. While Crystal Palace

:03:47. > :03:50.have been vocal in airing their fears, of Watford, who have seen 49

:03:50. > :03:54.home-grown players make the first team since their Academy opened,

:03:54. > :03:58.are confident that new rules will be impact a youth development.

:03:58. > :04:02.main reason we are not concerned as we have a good academy with a

:04:02. > :04:05.reputation of producing young players that creates a great

:04:05. > :04:09.environment for young players. There's no reason for young players

:04:09. > :04:12.to want to go and be developed anywhere else. But clubs like

:04:12. > :04:16.Watford and Crystal Palace will no longer be able to rely on their

:04:16. > :04:19.geographical poor. New rules will also mean teams won't be restricted

:04:19. > :04:23.to developing players who live within 90 minutes. Some fear this

:04:23. > :04:26.could be detrimental to the community based nature of the game.

:04:27. > :04:31.I'd be disappointed if it meant there were less opportunities frog

:04:31. > :04:35.young guys for the local teams, especially at Crystal Palace, to

:04:35. > :04:39.get the opportunities to play. you get a 13 or 14-year-old getting

:04:39. > :04:42.cherry-picked from his area and put in a location he is unfamiliar with,

:04:42. > :04:50.he could fall out of love with the game of football. It's all about

:04:50. > :04:55.enjoying the game at that age. That is what it's all about. Having

:04:55. > :04:58.accepted the scheme, new rules will be implemented in July. Improving

:04:58. > :05:02.the quality of young players in this country is the ultimate

:05:02. > :05:11.objective. The hope is that it won't come at the expense of the

:05:11. > :05:20.clubs in the Football League. The new measures begin in July. Let's

:05:20. > :05:24.talk Millwall now. Can you see the pluses and minuses of the new

:05:24. > :05:27.measures? Guess, they are trying to give them the best games programme

:05:27. > :05:31.to play against the best from a very early age. It will work

:05:31. > :05:36.towards the bigger clubs having the best players, there's no doubt

:05:36. > :05:40.about that. But there are certain clubs outside of the Premier League

:05:40. > :05:44.that have a fantastic reputation. You highlighted two there, Crystal

:05:44. > :05:49.Palace and my old club, Watford, who have such a good reputation of

:05:49. > :05:53.giving people a chance at an early age if they are good enough, I

:05:53. > :05:57.think that reputation will continue to attract and then keep good and

:05:57. > :06:01.promising schoolboys. Palace are worried, you do work down there

:06:01. > :06:06.with some of the young striker's. Are the concerns bounded, is there

:06:06. > :06:12.a problem for a club like Crystal Palace? As Dobbie said, in essence

:06:12. > :06:16.it is a good idea but the compensation side of it. They got

:06:16. > :06:20.750,000 for John Vostok. If someone else was taken it would be

:06:20. > :06:25.180,000. If I was an Academy director at Arsenal, Chelsea or

:06:25. > :06:31.Spurs, I would have 1 million and I'd go to Watford, Palace and

:06:31. > :06:34.Charlton and cherry-pick. I'd pick the best players at 15 years old.

:06:34. > :06:38.Or 1 million Eakin take a chance on the best talent in London and

:06:38. > :06:41.you are bound to get one Lord two of them come through. If that

:06:41. > :06:45.happens to Palace and the Premier League sides, isn't it a case that

:06:45. > :06:50.Palace take some of the players away from the likes of Millwall are

:06:50. > :06:55.well -- as well? There is a natural pecking order, definitely. It has

:06:55. > :06:58.to adjust at the top level. There are only 11 people that can play at

:06:58. > :07:03.the big clubs. With the pressure on and the foreign players coming into

:07:03. > :07:06.the top part of the game, or you will see his may be at 19, it might

:07:06. > :07:10.be longer, some of the smaller clubs might have to wait a bit

:07:10. > :07:14.longer, let other clubs develop them, pick them off at 19.

:07:14. > :07:17.Somewhere along the line there has to be a review of the loans system,

:07:17. > :07:22.where the smaller clubs can contribute to developing these

:07:22. > :07:27.players because even though they go in at 14 or 15, the chances of them

:07:27. > :07:31.playing for Chelsea or Arsenal until they've maybe got 150 League

:07:31. > :07:37.games under their belts are minimal. A review may be of the loan system

:07:37. > :07:40.later on is something that could run alongside. Brighty, the big

:07:40. > :07:45.Bourzat Palace were playing at the weekend and they got the better of

:07:45. > :07:50.what it. Yes, much needed as well. It is rare they score this amount

:07:50. > :07:55.of goals, Palace. This is the best win since they beat Brighton 3-1.

:07:55. > :08:01.Wilfried Zaha, one of the guys who came from the youth system. Chris

:08:01. > :08:06.Martin, I'm really pleased for him. He's put in a lot of work. He's got

:08:06. > :08:14.six and seven goals. Jermaine Easter, another goal. Some awful

:08:14. > :08:22.defending from Watford. Dikgacoi, a rare venture into the 18 yard box.

:08:22. > :08:32.More goals needed. 16 games to go. Outside chance of the play-offs,

:08:32. > :08:34.

:08:34. > :08:37.you never know. Let's talk about Millwall. Did they enjoy the Cup

:08:37. > :08:41.run now it's come to an end, they now have to sort yourself out in

:08:41. > :08:48.the league. A yes, they didn't enjoy it and it was an opportunity

:08:48. > :08:52.on Saturday. -- yes, they did enjoy it. For us now, this season is

:08:52. > :08:56.about surviving, staying in the championship. We've worked hard to

:08:56. > :08:59.get into the championship, six points above the relegation zone.

:08:59. > :09:05.We have an opportunity against Middlesbrough on Tuesday to try to

:09:05. > :09:09.make that nine. We have to now get onto concentrating on the league

:09:10. > :09:14.and making sure we sustain our championship status. Did you enjoy

:09:14. > :09:17.the Cup run as a manager? When you're not safe in the league you

:09:18. > :09:22.must think that is what we've got to concentrate on and get that

:09:22. > :09:26.right, but he had some much success this season. A yes, we had a good

:09:26. > :09:30.cup run. It gives us the chance to play against some Premier League

:09:30. > :09:33.players. We've had two replays in there and the extra games give you

:09:33. > :09:38.revenue that can help you in the league. They certainly help you in

:09:38. > :09:41.terms of the structure of the club. No Football League action for you

:09:41. > :09:45.at the weekend because you can't play two games in the space of a

:09:45. > :09:54.few days, but we've got the goals in your game last Tuesday against

:09:54. > :09:58.Brighton. After the game... We played well and we were ahead twice.

:09:58. > :10:02.It was a last-minute goal that got it back. We thought the performance

:10:02. > :10:06.was a winning one. We were disappointed to draw the game. We

:10:06. > :10:10.were disappointed with the free- kick, our set-up of the free-kick.

:10:10. > :10:14.But it's been our season where we put on good performances and got

:10:14. > :10:17.one point instead of three. We should have held on there. I think

:10:17. > :10:23.it's 30 goals you've scored this year. It's a lot less than you've

:10:23. > :10:28.been a scoring. It's affected us being able to get in behind side.

:10:28. > :10:32.Steve has done very well and is a good all-round player, but our side

:10:32. > :10:37.last year, we could get in behind sides but at the moment we feel we

:10:37. > :10:47.are playing good football and dark to some degree in front of sides.

:10:47. > :10:49.

:10:49. > :10:53.A couple of the sides around you there. You want to move away from

:10:53. > :11:02.that, you don't want to be in the bottom six. You want to be as high

:11:02. > :11:06.up as you can. They are big games. We've got to really concentrate and

:11:06. > :11:08.finish this season off strongly forced a Millwall aren't the only

:11:08. > :11:16.team in championship action tomorrow. West Ham are hoping to

:11:16. > :11:19.move back to the top of the table Let's turn our attention to League

:11:19. > :11:23.One, where Brentford have been playing tonight. They went into the

:11:23. > :11:33.match against 7th place Carlisle, hoping to move away from mid-table

:11:33. > :11:36.

:11:36. > :11:40.routine that almost a didn't work. Eventually it's been moved forward

:11:40. > :11:49.into the penalty area. It was a header over the top of the bar,

:11:49. > :11:59.boasted in eight yards out. -- ghosted. It comes from Saunders.

:11:59. > :12:27.

:12:27. > :12:37.It's in! It's a leading goal for bundled over. It's 2-0 to Brentford.

:12:37. > :12:40.

:12:40. > :12:50.Donaldson appealed for the penalty, Adam Colin didn't do well with that

:12:50. > :13:09.

:13:09. > :13:19.He controlled it, steady himself and Berahino drives home the goal.

:13:19. > :13:29.

:13:29. > :13:36.What a composed finish from such a He would have seen that late, Simon

:13:36. > :13:46.Moore. He makes a decent Guyett and keeps it out. - that he makes a

:13:46. > :13:57.

:13:57. > :14:01.What a debut for Berahino. They all thought he was maybe going to lead

:14:01. > :14:11.on the outside for some Saunders. Instead, he looks over the top and

:14:11. > :14:24.

:14:25. > :14:27.drive it beyond Adam Collins. It That was Brentford. Time now to see

:14:28. > :14:37.how two of our other teams in League One fared this weekend,

:14:38. > :14:40.

:14:40. > :14:47.extended their unbeaten run to seven games but trailed when

:14:47. > :14:49.Tranmere went ahead. They were back in it when the eagle-eyed officials

:14:49. > :14:55.decreed Michael Morris and's header crashed off the bar and over the

:14:55. > :15:05.line. They might have taken all three points. But this delight that

:15:05. > :15:07.cross was not turned in. 11 points Clare of the play-off places.

:15:07. > :15:17.Wycombe Wanderers travel to the stadium and knowing nothing less

:15:17. > :15:22.than three points would do against their rivals or Walsall. Alex

:15:22. > :15:32.Nichols's spot kick was well saved. The goalkeeper could do nothing to

:15:32. > :15:32.

:15:32. > :15:42.stop this a rocket shot from 25 yards for the. A third consecutive

:15:42. > :15:45.Kenny, you are done the League 1 championship yourself. How do you

:15:45. > :15:50.see Charlton fearing that they are to go out this season because it's

:15:50. > :15:55.a big move in terms of quality, isn't it? They had been there

:15:55. > :16:00.beyond to the Premier League. 68 points from 30 games is fantastic

:16:00. > :16:06.so far for the is that down to the manager? The players? From the

:16:06. > :16:10.outside looking in, what do you think? His recruitment last summer

:16:10. > :16:13.was excellent. We played them in pre-season and straightaway they

:16:13. > :16:20.looked a balanced team. Sometimes it takes your while to get a

:16:20. > :16:26.balance. They have had a natural balance all season. The points

:16:26. > :16:31.total is fantastic and I expect them to see it through. Two defeats,

:16:32. > :16:36.anything else wins. When they play the big sides, but Sheffield in,

:16:36. > :16:43.they beat them both for the Charlton are good for the Wycombe

:16:43. > :16:49.Wanderers are bad. I know, they had Walsall and Yeovil to play. They

:16:49. > :16:57.lost the first one. To lose against Walsall, rock bottom, five points

:16:57. > :17:02.adrift. It's going to be difficult now. It's a bit negative. I would

:17:02. > :17:07.be worried because I felt they could still pull away. You win

:17:07. > :17:11.again, you don't move. You hope the team for but you don't create a

:17:11. > :17:17.bigger gap. You have to concentrate on the home games and concentrate

:17:17. > :17:19.on those and build up some self- belief. Then you can make up the

:17:19. > :17:21.difference. Now every football club have unique

:17:21. > :17:24.songs and chants. That's particularly true of London's

:17:24. > :17:28.oldest football league side, Leyton Orient. They may not have seen

:17:29. > :17:32.their team win at home this year. But, as Chris Slegg found out when

:17:32. > :17:42.he paid a visit to Brisbane Road on Saturday, the O's supporters are

:17:42. > :17:53.

:17:53. > :18:00.learned, another in Leyton Orient players who have taken to the pitch

:18:00. > :18:03.against a Scunthorpe, under the so- called 12th man. The fans will be

:18:03. > :18:07.inspiring and allowing their frustrations to get the better of

:18:07. > :18:13.them but over the course of the next 90 minutes, what affect can

:18:13. > :18:18.they have on what goes on on the other side of this white line?

:18:18. > :18:22.evidence suggests, yes, the fans can influence the outcome of a

:18:22. > :18:30.match. Players are perceived a supportive crowd as beneficial in

:18:30. > :18:36.terms of motivation. They are less anxious and the able to concentrate.

:18:36. > :18:46.It's about having a to Bath man in football. If you get be hind the

:18:46. > :18:46.

:18:46. > :18:56.players, Boca Lee, I think, yes, you can have a factor -- a vocally.

:18:56. > :19:28.

:19:28. > :19:37.Have you got a favoured chant? was a prickly about you? I don't

:19:37. > :19:47.mind. Me and the fans, by and large, have a good relationship. They had

:19:47. > :20:03.

:20:03. > :20:08.also if you are watching rubbish that ball, you won't be chanting,

:20:08. > :20:18.so it works both ways, really thought that the fans get behind

:20:18. > :20:24.

:20:24. > :20:34.the team and it encourages the team through at Brighton. It stuck,

:20:34. > :20:44.

:20:44. > :20:51.really. I'm not bothered. I think effect on the outcome of a match?

:20:51. > :20:55.Yes, for sure. I mean, I think it's down to the team to be honest, to

:20:55. > :20:59.generate that sort of enthusiasm for the crowd. If that we are

:20:59. > :21:03.playing good football, creating chances, making tackles,

:21:04. > :21:13.entertaining, I think the 12th man comes alive as. Not too often today,

:21:14. > :21:15.

:21:15. > :21:19.but by and large, our support at Not the result the Orient fans were

:21:19. > :21:22.after. We should say thoughts with keeper Lee Butcher who sustained a

:21:22. > :21:29.serious knee injury in build-up to that third Scunthorpe goal. He will

:21:29. > :21:33.be out for the rest of the season. In terms of the impact on the team,

:21:33. > :21:40.you're famously known for your boss of this crowd. Does it feel like

:21:40. > :21:43.they can change a game for good and bad? Definitely got the feeling of

:21:43. > :21:47.the best singing in the ground is massive. The relationship between

:21:47. > :21:52.the players and the fans need to be good. The fans need to see the

:21:52. > :21:59.players have quality first to be able to back them up. If you do get

:21:59. > :22:05.it going, one can spark off the other. It can set up advantage. A

:22:05. > :22:12.12th man. Can you think of an example where it has made a

:22:12. > :22:22.difference at a specific game? of occasions. One Ivan's there are

:22:22. > :22:23.

:22:24. > :22:28.down, to liven one down, they split Then the players that the

:22:28. > :22:34.motivation of from the crowd and momentum. We have seen it would two

:22:34. > :22:39.goals in the last few minutes to turn it around. It happened to me.

:22:39. > :22:45.Manchester United were 3-0 up, and I thought it was it. They started

:22:45. > :22:49.and the crowd were behind them and it went to 3-3. Some players will

:22:49. > :22:55.think they are chanting my name and levied, but it might have a

:22:55. > :23:01.negative effect on others. You have to put the responsibility on the

:23:01. > :23:06.players. Generally, the fans will follow. There was a fantastic

:23:06. > :23:14.atmosphere at Millwall. It feels like 20,000 in there. Furby

:23:14. > :23:19.officials, they are only human. -- for the officials. A passionate

:23:19. > :23:25.crowd can send a few key decisions your way. You love that when they

:23:25. > :23:28.gave you grief, didn't you? I got it a lot. I wonder why! Plenty of

:23:28. > :23:32.singing. Sadly not much winning this weekend for our clubs. We

:23:32. > :23:34.follow five teams in League Two and four of them were in action this

:23:34. > :23:44.weekend. There wasn't a win in sight. Here's Phil and Caroline

:23:44. > :23:52.bombers as outstanding and is delighted to see them go ahead

:23:52. > :23:59.thanks to this at half-time. Sure no rig equalised. Then, with time

:23:59. > :24:08.ticking, Mark Richards's defending was pushed to the limits. He struck

:24:08. > :24:12.home the spot-kick to inflict a 6th straight defeat. Larry Centers

:24:12. > :24:22.apologise to the plans are saying there was a different in class --

:24:22. > :24:32.as a Lawrie Sanchez. Barnet, though, it can rely on the ice thick

:24:32. > :24:36.

:24:36. > :24:46.MacLeod. -- Isaac MdLeod. And it got there first league defeat of
