:00:21. > :00:26.Want to read's Late Kick Off, the heart of the matter. How do we

:00:26. > :00:33.ensure their's safety? I cannot understand why they have not done

:00:33. > :00:38.more to prevent this. Price verses prawn sandwiches, it is all changed

:00:38. > :00:47.for one fan. And whenever you watched it from,

:00:47. > :00:51.some things are worth seeing again. Hartlepool hits the net at last.

:00:51. > :00:56.Welcome to Late Kick Off. Still more Danny Mills. We promise he

:00:56. > :01:06.will be back one day. Until then, we are keeping the stalest busy

:01:06. > :01:06.

:01:06. > :01:09.with three full head of hair. I am delighted to welcome them all

:01:09. > :01:15.to the programme. We do not actually have stylists on this

:01:15. > :01:19.programme. As I am sure you have worked out. Ritchie, welcome back.

:01:20. > :01:25.Paul, welcome. He'd finished as a player through injury at 21,

:01:25. > :01:29.trained as a physio at Newcastle including under Kevin Keegan. They

:01:29. > :01:35.bet I am interested in is trained barrister and a published novelist.

:01:35. > :01:41.Discuss. An Irish heartbeat is about a British Government minister

:01:41. > :01:44.who goes to Ireland after a long absence and meet up with an old

:01:44. > :01:48.girlfriend he abandoned. There is also a Republican dissident who

:01:48. > :01:58.wants to bring down the Irish peace process. The romantic political

:01:58. > :01:59.

:01:59. > :02:02.thriller? Here cities. He went back in 2009 with Alan Shearer. -- it

:02:03. > :02:08.sure is. You too must have been thick as thieves for him to have

:02:09. > :02:14.got to him as the header performance. Or if he saw my

:02:14. > :02:19.undoubted abilities! He is a very good friend and I have a lot of

:02:19. > :02:27.face in his abilities as a manager. -- a lot of faith. Deduce their

:02:27. > :02:34.keep in touch with him? I think he will. -- do you still keep in touch

:02:34. > :02:40.with him. I think a lot of jobs come up, but many times you do not

:02:40. > :02:44.have a lot of opportunity. He must get it right the first time.

:02:44. > :02:47.prizes for guessing the first person he will be employing.

:02:47. > :02:53.Thankfully, Fabrice Muamba is making a miraculous recovery after

:02:53. > :03:00.being effectively dead first 78 minutes. His cardiac arrest at

:03:00. > :03:05.White Hart Lane is not the first incident of its time. Players have

:03:05. > :03:15.suffered from the semen stain 2007 and 1990. David Longhurst did not

:03:15. > :03:15.

:03:15. > :03:20.survive. -- players have suffered from the same incidents in 2007.

:03:20. > :03:30.David had gone up for a high ball into the goalmouth. He fell into a

:03:30. > :03:33.

:03:34. > :03:36.We were trying to bring him back round again by massaging him and

:03:36. > :03:46.giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but they could not

:03:46. > :03:53.

:03:53. > :03:58.It really is almost a freak occurrence, a freak incident, to be

:03:58. > :04:04.struck down by a cardiac arrest in the middle of the game. The last

:04:04. > :04:11.circumstance I am collar of was Marc Vivien foe, and it hit the

:04:11. > :04:15.footballing world hard. One of the worrying aspect of it from the

:04:15. > :04:19.Fabrice Muamba case is that it appears that he had four or five

:04:19. > :04:23.screenings already at his young age. But they have not picked it up, are

:04:23. > :04:27.we doing the right screening? Is there something else we should be

:04:27. > :04:34.doing? Does we have a condition that could not be picked up on a

:04:34. > :04:39.screen anyway? We have to analyse and learn the lessons. You hope

:04:39. > :04:43.that you have a very good screening tests and they are never really put

:04:43. > :04:48.to the test until that fateful moment. I think that the medical

:04:48. > :04:55.staff are quite pleased with the way that -- with the things they

:04:55. > :04:59.have put in place here and they have never had to use. You can see

:04:59. > :05:03.the for Chambers of your heart there.

:05:03. > :05:07.I was appointed by the PFA about 15 years ago as one of their

:05:07. > :05:13.cardiologists have to scream the youth trainees or scholars as they

:05:13. > :05:18.are now known in the midst -- in the North East region. We have been

:05:18. > :05:24.screening here since the mid- 90s. Between the scholars and the squads

:05:24. > :05:29.of our local teams, we have screened quite a number of players.

:05:29. > :05:36.I can only recall from that one player that we were worried about

:05:36. > :05:41.their future participation in sport. I believe that the PFA from

:05:41. > :05:46.skimming through the country would stop one or two annually, so it is

:05:46. > :05:50.a relatively small number. There is a screening programme in Italy that

:05:50. > :05:55.has been in progress for 30 years where every single person aged

:05:55. > :05:59.between 12 and 35 who participate in competitive sport must have an

:06:00. > :06:06.annual fitness test. This includes an electrocardiogram. Their death

:06:06. > :06:12.rates have gone down from 3.6 per hundred 1002 0.4 per hundred

:06:12. > :06:15.thousand. That presents a 90% reduction in sudden death. Most of

:06:15. > :06:23.this reduction has been due to the identification of heart muscle

:06:23. > :06:28.diseases. We need to call for a medical for the players. We must

:06:28. > :06:33.bring the players often. Not one time, but every six months. Go if

:06:33. > :06:37.you look at Manchester City, one of the most lucrative clubs in the

:06:37. > :06:43.country, I gather they have five doctors as part of their medical

:06:43. > :06:49.staff there. We could never expect that at Carlisle. If we were asked

:06:49. > :06:55.to provide annual screening, and my physiotherapist I have discussed it,

:06:55. > :07:01.there would be a cost involved and it is not something that would be

:07:01. > :07:06.too high. With our local Premiership clubs, we did review

:07:06. > :07:13.all of the literature in this area quite closely. We decided to do

:07:13. > :07:18.screaming when the player was 16. At 18 when they were further into

:07:18. > :07:23.their scholarship programme, and again at 21. In an ideal world, it

:07:23. > :07:28.would be nice to be able to offer screening on an annual basis. But

:07:28. > :07:33.resources are limited, and therefore a unified approach will

:07:33. > :07:38.have to be taken and could best policy agreed. You should be in

:07:38. > :07:43.line with the recommendations by UEFA and FIFA, and they recommend

:07:43. > :07:47.one screen every two years at least. The annual process is definitely

:07:47. > :07:50.something that we will be wanting to implement, and that must be

:07:50. > :07:55.assessed to make sure it is affordable for the likes of

:07:55. > :08:00.Plymouth and Northampton, or people at the bottom of League 2. It will

:08:00. > :08:05.not be a problem for the guys at the top of the Premier League.

:08:05. > :08:09.had seen their team mate collapse in the dressing room, he suffered

:08:09. > :08:15.heart failure and was given mouth- to-mouth resuscitation, and when

:08:15. > :08:20.that failed paramedics had to use a different later. They know better

:08:20. > :08:23.than most that I am very lucky to be sat here talking today. No one

:08:23. > :08:33.would have thought that there was any chance that what happened. You

:08:33. > :08:39.never know what is around the corner. It is achievable, long-term,

:08:39. > :08:44.team towards providing deferred relay towers across all levels and

:08:44. > :08:49.having these available. What he must do is forget about what might

:08:49. > :08:54.be world wide consensus and get the cardiologists and the doctors

:08:54. > :08:58.together for football and say, what to rethink is reasonable? Watch to

:08:58. > :09:08.rethink is achievable? What should we be doing in the future? And have

:09:08. > :09:11.

:09:11. > :09:19.a consensus for football in this country. You have seen the stand.

:09:19. > :09:27.It is really great, it brings back a lot of memories. But I cannot

:09:27. > :09:37.understand why, in 20 years, over 22 years this year, that they have

:09:37. > :09:39.

:09:39. > :09:43.not done more to try and prevent Our thanks to Gateshead for

:09:43. > :09:47.allowing us to follow some of their players for Hertz screenings. Let's

:09:47. > :09:51.concentrate on the two key issues that have come out of the past ten

:09:51. > :09:56.days. Should be screened for dollars more? Also, facilities

:09:56. > :09:59.further down the food chain. I am not just talking about, you have

:09:59. > :10:03.travelled the length and breadth of the country in the lower two

:10:03. > :10:09.divisions, if that had happened on one of those grounds, what would a

:10:09. > :10:13.player's chances have been? What are the medical facilities like?

:10:13. > :10:17.is hard to say, is the honest answer. I know it is a lot better

:10:17. > :10:23.than it was 10 or 15 years ago, perhaps. There is always an

:10:23. > :10:26.ambulance on standby. They can always get on to the pitch.

:10:26. > :10:31.Physiotherapists in the club doctor would be on site. Possibly someone

:10:31. > :10:38.on the crowd may have some medical knowledge, like what happened in

:10:38. > :10:45.White Hart Lane. But also in remote locations. We are not just talking

:10:45. > :10:50.about certain areas. There was someone in the audience who told

:10:50. > :10:54.the paramedics to go to a certain hospitals. If this happened in the

:10:54. > :11:00.Hurford area, there would not be the same facilities and the chances

:11:00. > :11:03.of survival would have been curtailed. That is probably the

:11:03. > :11:07.case and we must be thankful that it happened where it dead. Fabrice

:11:07. > :11:14.got fantastic treatment. Now he is hope lay on the right road to

:11:14. > :11:19.recovery. Where are we with screenings? First of all, on your

:11:19. > :11:22.career, but also where we are now with say, Middlesbrough. You still

:11:22. > :11:27.work in the academy, what is happening? I have never been

:11:27. > :11:32.screened. As a professional footballer, I had enough clubs and

:11:32. > :11:37.never got screamed once. With me, it was part and parcel of the

:11:37. > :11:40.medical. Now, it is totally different. Eddie Ladd to call in,

:11:40. > :11:50.certainly the score was, they all get screened. They get screen once

:11:50. > :11:54.per year. -- the lads that get called in. A screener may find a

:11:54. > :11:58.problem. What do you do about that? It is the people you employ, the

:11:58. > :12:04.specialist at the club who are important here. How can you manage

:12:04. > :12:12.this? That someone gets screen, a fit and healthy lad who showed no

:12:12. > :12:15.symptoms,... As #ColourWhite as Fabrice Muamba had done previously.

:12:15. > :12:20.Where's you may know you have a symptom there, which for these

:12:20. > :12:27.Bramble would not know, it is the specialist people who have around

:12:27. > :12:32.the club are unimportant. Freak occurrence for you, David James in

:12:32. > :12:36.his column described the idea of the complete screening of

:12:36. > :12:42.footballers as a hysterical over- reaction. 12 people under 35 die of

:12:42. > :12:49.a heart condition. Is it just one of those things? Unfortunately, it

:12:49. > :12:54.is one of those things. And the 0.2 both made about screening and the

:12:54. > :13:01.after-care go together. -- v argument you both raised about the

:13:01. > :13:05.after-care. The people at Hereford would be very capable of beginning

:13:05. > :13:09.the correct chain of events after this happened to ensure the best

:13:10. > :13:13.survival rates. The quality of care would be there. In the case of

:13:13. > :13:16.Fabrice Muamba, he has five daughters fighting over him to give

:13:16. > :13:21.him care. If you're going to have a tragic event, it is a very good

:13:21. > :13:24.place to have it, White Hart Lane. But I maintain that the people at

:13:24. > :13:28.Hereford and in those cases would equally be able to recognise what

:13:28. > :13:33.has happened and start the chain of events in motion to get the cost --

:13:33. > :13:36.the person the best possible chance. I know from my own experience that

:13:37. > :13:41.any of the physiotherapist and doctors, every two years they go on

:13:41. > :13:45.a recent scores. Every year they have a refresher course. If that is

:13:45. > :13:55.not followed down the food chain then it should be. That is just as

:13:55. > :14:10.

:14:10. > :14:20.The report said that young players are playing hookey. Young players

:14:20. > :14:29.by sneaking out of screenings. This is an eye-opener. Hopefully with

:14:29. > :14:37.Fabrice Muamba it is an eye-opener and they will stop and think. If we

:14:37. > :14:47.are not doing the optimum screening the key is about the people that

:14:47. > :14:57.

:14:57. > :15:05.are responding. Joey Barton is taking a Twitter sabbatical. Danny

:15:05. > :15:15.Simpson is not on their at either. But you can contact us on a Twitter

:15:15. > :15:23.

:15:23. > :15:33.and Facebook. From Bovril to Bali. -- de Champagne. Carlisle are

:15:33. > :15:35.

:15:35. > :15:40.maintaining their play-off position. They have been a resurgence of late.

:15:40. > :15:50.They have been a resurgence of late. That was a well-worked goal. What

:15:50. > :15:51.

:15:51. > :15:58.cool finish. They are doing well to stay in the next. Four of the final

:15:58. > :16:05.eight games are against fellow top six teams. That will be crucial.

:16:05. > :16:14.Destiny is in their own hands. It is important to keep the run going

:16:14. > :16:24.when you were in a play-off spot. Four games without a goal, and

:16:24. > :16:26.

:16:26. > :16:36.finally you get that victory. What time did you get back? A at 1230.

:16:36. > :16:37.

:16:37. > :16:47.It was a great victory. We should have read the keeper work. You

:16:47. > :16:50.

:16:50. > :16:57.spoke about the goal. One chance, one goal. He was so pleased with

:16:57. > :17:05.himself. He had promised the week before that he would get a goal,

:17:05. > :17:15.but he didn't, and he apologised. He had two chances. I have seen him

:17:15. > :17:25.stick them away in the reserves. He can take those chances. To get the

:17:25. > :17:37.

:17:37. > :17:45.winner for us at The Oval is great. 508 appearances. Faraday has been

:17:45. > :17:54.talking about an Rio Ferdinand. Have you had to adapt your

:17:54. > :18:02.preparations? Not so much from went I have been at Hartlepool, but from

:18:02. > :18:12.being a young player. Sports science is now so important in the

:18:12. > :18:13.

:18:13. > :18:21.game. Injury prevention work for instance. Water intake. All these

:18:21. > :18:30.sorts of things help you prolong your career. Getting to know the

:18:30. > :18:34.game inside out as an experienced player can help you at that. I am

:18:34. > :18:36.exhausted hearing about that. The Tyneside based charity, Show Racism

:18:36. > :18:38.The Red Card, premiered its new anti-homophobia film "Let's Tackle

:18:38. > :18:40.anti-homophobia film "Let's Tackle It" last week. It features a number

:18:40. > :18:50.of top footballers, and other sports stars, talking about the

:18:50. > :18:52.

:18:52. > :18:57.issue. Here's a clip from it. sports are finding it easier to

:18:57. > :19:05.come to terms with players being openly gay. This England cricketer

:19:05. > :19:08.received support and understanding from his team-mates. A number of

:19:08. > :19:18.supporters said you are the way you are and there is nothing wrong with

:19:18. > :19:21.

:19:21. > :19:31.that. It has been a positive sign. People are saying on to what it it

:19:31. > :19:32.

:19:32. > :19:41.is good for English critic. Is this an issue? There are possibly gay

:19:41. > :19:51.footballers were not prepared to come right. We have to send a

:19:51. > :19:53.

:19:53. > :19:59.message that it is fine to come out. We have to raise awareness. If

:19:59. > :20:09.there are gay footballers to feel under pressure whether it is from

:20:09. > :20:14.

:20:14. > :20:20.the media, supporters, if they want to come out, by all means why not.

:20:20. > :20:27.The governing bodies have been immensely supportive. But the

:20:27. > :20:34.media? That is the problem. In the club it is fine. Players will

:20:34. > :20:40.accept that. There might be other issues. There might be a marriage

:20:40. > :20:46.that he has come out of. There might be kids involved. There are a

:20:46. > :20:50.host of things that may stop footballers coming out. If someone

:20:50. > :20:55.feels strongly enough and ready to do that then they will get all the

:20:55. > :20:58.support that the need. Just to mark your card, the award

:20:58. > :21:01.winning BBC documentary about Bedlington Terriers, "Mr Rich and

:21:01. > :21:04.The Terriers", is available this week on the iPlayer. The pie and

:21:04. > :21:07.pint, the banter, the chanting. But what if you could swap your

:21:07. > :21:10.cheap seat behind the goal for the best view in the ground - the full

:21:10. > :21:13.VIP pass with prawn sandwiches aplenty, a five-course meal and

:21:13. > :21:15.free bubbly? Well that's exactly what one Boro fan did for

:21:15. > :21:25.Saturday's game against Bristol City. So did all the trimmings turn

:21:25. > :21:33.

:21:33. > :21:41.his head? I love with us but now as much as I have always done. I have

:21:41. > :21:51.never been in the hospitality before. I wonder will there be two

:21:51. > :21:56.football fans. Will they be watching the game question we are

:21:56. > :22:06.here because we have been given a season ticket up he is upstairs in

:22:06. > :22:06.

:22:06. > :22:49.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:22:49. > :22:58.Thank you. Welcome to the stadium. Queues. A how many people are in

:22:58. > :23:05.the box? We have 700 guests in a hospitality. We can cater for 1,200

:23:05. > :23:08.on match day. We have a range of guests from traditional corporate

:23:08. > :23:18.guests who are purchased in the facility on behalf of entertaining

:23:18. > :23:26.

:23:26. > :23:36.I am having a wonderful time. He has probably got the best champagne,

:23:36. > :23:38.

:23:38. > :23:48.the best dates. I will settle for a pint of lager and a bowl will suit.

:23:48. > :23:52.Corporate hospitality? Yes it is very good coast of it is and I good

:23:52. > :24:02.to say that the admit that we could in is at least equivalent to what

:24:02. > :24:03.

:24:03. > :24:13.ordinary fans Britain. I am really enjoying the day. It is

:24:13. > :24:13.

:24:13. > :25:13.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:25:13. > :25:23.What you think about the corporate? It is very good. It is out of my

:25:23. > :25:32.

:25:32. > :25:35.price bracket. The corporate would be better for my wife. Thanks a lot.

:25:35. > :25:44.Resisting Craig Hignett comment that he was not wearing his own

:25:44. > :25:53.suit, are you arm ball full or a bubbly? I think football is about

:25:53. > :25:59.the fans. Have you got a corporate confession? We have a corporate box

:25:59. > :26:09.and a halfway line that Newcastle United. We publicise what we do.

:26:09. > :26:14.

:26:14. > :26:19.There is a distinct purpose there? Absolutely. Nice bit of advertising.

:26:19. > :26:27.I am surprised they do not take us up there! You do a bit of hosting

:26:27. > :26:35.and interviews. Have we got increasingly real fans in among the

:26:35. > :26:39.corporate boxes? Yes there are regular die had supporters. If you

:26:39. > :26:46.can afford it it is the best way to watch football. Make up the pitch.

:26:47. > :26:55.Have a meal. Sit there. The only downside is that you have to get

:26:55. > :27:05.suited and booted. But for at the it is fantastic. They need to shout

:27:05. > :27:12.

:27:12. > :27:18.a bit louder do they not? What an opportunity for Sunderland. Can you

:27:18. > :27:24.imagine if they make it through? On Sunderland's home for the stand

:27:24. > :27:29.every chance of getting through. Absolutely. A fantastic opportunity.

:27:29. > :27:33.Another home game and would be fantastic. The players are playing

:27:33. > :27:41.with confidence. Did he did not change his team at the weekend.

:27:41. > :27:45.Everton did not either. The idea was to keep them winning spirit.

:27:45. > :27:52.the business end of the season who does not want to play in these kind

:27:52. > :28:00.of games? Several players are playing well. Michael Owen has

:28:00. > :28:10.revealed on Twitter that he is voting for Tim Krul us as the Young
